A four-year-old boy who was knocked out of his pushchair in a hit and run incident, suffering severe bruising to both legs, has been left traumatised to just walk down the street. Munatazir Mahdi, from Ringwood Road, Bradford, was on his way to the Mosque with his mother, Assiya Bibi, and sister, Haseena Batool, last month when the collision occurred on Horton Park Avenue.

Planning chiefs have supported a number of major planning applications which could bring about a major boost for jobs, homes and retail investment in the city. At the meeting of the City Plans Panel yesterday, councillors discussed one of the biggest sets of proposals that the local authority has dealt with this year. Some of the reports included major schemes such as expansion plans for the White Rose Shopping Centre, the Thorp Arch Estate in Wetherby and the expansion of the gypsy and travellers site in Cottingley Springs. Under the plans submitted for Thorp Arch Estate, up to 2,000 houses (including affordable homes) and a new relief road could be built. It would also bring about associated community facilities, sports pitches, primary school and open space. The White Rose Shopping Centre application features a new 12-screen cinema, extension of the existing Primark store and Debenhams stores and new restaurants.

As part of a legal requirement, householders must respond to the form in order to ensure that they are eligible to vote in the local and European elections that will be held on 22nd May 2014. The deadline to accept returns has now been extended by Leeds City Council until 18th December 2013, and any household who fails to provide this information before or on this date, will receive by law, a home visit by officers. If there are no changes to make to the information pre-printed on the form, you can respond by telephone, online or by text message. Leeds International Film Festival

In another record-breaking year, over 35,000 people packed into venues across the city to enjoy the 27th Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF27). Movie lovers were treated to a rich, diverse programme of scintillating film, which included 318 features, documentaries and shorts from over 50 countries. In preparing for LIFF27, more than 2000 film entries from over 60 countries were received. A Huddersfield mother-of-two and her ex-husband pleaded guilty at Bradford Crown Court, of swindling would-be husbands out of around £35,000 in wedding gifts as part of an arranged marriage scam. Sidra Fatima, 33, had posed as an available and willing bride on an Asian marriage website and admitted to a series of fraud charges involving seven different men. Her former husband Raja Haider Ali, 45, also admitted being involved in six of the wedding cons, which were committed between May 2009 and January 2011.

After their arrests Fatima claimed that she had been forced to take part in the offending by her husband while Ali suggested he was being blackmailed by his wife and had pretended to be her brother-in-law during some of the wedding scams. A jury at Bradford Crown Court heard last week that the scams were part of a variety of fraud offences committed by the couple to fund their dishonest lifestyle. In addition to the wedding deceptions Fatima also admitted giving false details about her employment and income in relation to a £171,000 mortgage fraud involving a former home in Coppice Drive, Netherton, back in 2007. The pair also pleaded guilty on

the third day of their trial to charges involving insurance claims for three ‘staged burglaries’ at the same address and Ali admitted fraud charges in relation to money he obtained from a man who thought he would be able to buy their house. The jury heard that Fatima had not worked since the couple settled in the Huddersfield area in 1999 while Ali had earned a modest declared income as a taxi driver between 1999 and 2009. Fatima, who now lives in Dewsbury, had described herself on the internet wedding site as being ‘simple and sincere’ and claimed to be looking for someone who could ‘touch my soul’. But after the would-be suitors had spent around £5000 each on

Fatima and Ali, now of Springbank Road, Bradley Mills, were granted bail, but the judge said they must live and sleep at their home addresses and they must also surrender their passports. Before Fatima entered her guilty pleas Judge Burn indicated that the maximum prison sentence she would face would be 13 months and today he warned both defendants that the offences would almost inevitably result in custodial sentences.

The Leader of Leeds City Council has called on everyone in the city to “get ready and spread the word” as more details were today revealed about the Grand Départ of next year’s Tour de France. An update report on the preparations being carried out as Leeds gears up to be host city for the world’s largest annual sporting event is to be discussed by the council’s executive board at its meeting at Civic Hall on Wednesday 18th December. The report gives an insight into the progress being made in the preparations by the council and other local authorities, as well as partner agencies, along the route and in the region.

A Calderdale resident has been ordered by the Court to pay £1,050 for not cleaning up after his dog in one of the borough’s parks. Calderdale Council has successfully prosecuted Mr Jonathan Wilson of Brighouse for failing to clear up after his dog on two separate occasions in Bramston Street Recreation Ground, Rastrick. The Council’s dog warden witnessed both offences and served Mr Wilson with a fine of £80 each time. Mr Wilson refused to pay both fines. To make matters worse, when the dog warden approached Mr Wilson he refused to give his details, and then gave false details; and the second dog fouling offence happened in an area where children play.

SCENE: Seemberjeet’s body was found in the River Aire near Leeds Train Station

Police have confirmed that the body pulled from the River Aire last week was that of missing Bradford mother, Seemberjeet Kaur. The 35-year-old was last seen taking a taxi from her home in East Bowling on the 23rd October and a number of public appeals were made for information regarding her whereabouts. Police were called to the River Aire on Thursday 5th December at approximately 1.35pm after a report from a member of the public that there was a body in the water. Underwater teams had been searching along the river, between Saltaire and Leeds, over the past weeks. A post-mortem examination was carried out the following day with the death not being treated as suspicious.

Ms Kaur’s disappearance was described as ‘out of character’ by her family after she failed to collect her three-year-old child from nursery. Officers were increasingly concerned for her welfare as the mother of one had been suffering from depression and it was unclear whether she had taken her medication before taking a taxi from her home on the day she went missing. A fortnight after she was reported as missing, officers carried out an ‘information seek’ operation in the park, where residents were shown a photograph of Mrs Kaur to jog their memories and asked to fill out questionnaires to establish whether they might have seen her. Her family had previously spoken out about their hope of finding Ms Kaur alive. The Coroner has been informed and an inquest will be held in Mrs Kaur’s death.

Patients suffering from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus are to benefit from £13,000 thanks to the hardworking efforts of hospital volunteers. The Friends of St Luke’s donated the funds after raising the money through their work in running the hospital’s public tea-bars. The group used the wellearned cash to buy 14 reclining chairs and an ultrasound trolley for the Horton Wing’s F4 ward. They also bought items such as an aqua-chair for the hospital’s hydrotherapy pool and equipment which lets physiotherapists and occupational therapists measure a patient’s muscle

resistance and grip. Sister Suzanne Mitchell said: “Many of the patients we treat have rheumatoid arthritis and lupus which means they suffer from a lot of joint damage and many require lengthy spells on our day-care unit recieving intravenous infusions. “These sessions can last from 8.30am to 5.30pm and sometimes go on even longer which means patients sitting for long periods while they receive their medicines. “These new reclining chairs are a fantastic addition to the ward as they help patients with reduced mobility to lie down in comfort during treatments, rather than having to sit upright for long spells of time.”

Leeds’ community came together last week to celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela during a special service at Leeds Minster. The commemorative service commenced at the Minster on Thursday the 12th December and saw tens of people turn up to pay their respects. The event was conducted by the Rt. Revd. John Packer, Bishop of Ripon and Leeds, and Canon Tony Bundock, Rector of Leeds, whilst civic leaders, including Councillor Keith Wakefield, leader of Leeds City Council and Cllr Thomas Murray, Lord Mayor of Leeds, were in attendance. The tribute featured music from the Minster Choir, the Free Range Choir, the Gledhow Choir of African Song, Garforth Academy with the Mzuvele School Choir, and St Peter's School in Lincoln Green. The event had been organised by Leeds Minster alongside the council and Leeds Churches Together in Mission.

Water damage protection

Residents in flood hit areas will soon be able to benefit from help and support to protect their properties against further flooding. Calderdale Council is leading a part funded Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs project working with residents to help to protect groups of properties against flooding by building flood resilience in Todmorden, Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge. 150 properties, at different locations along the valley have been chosen for this scheme, all are at high risk of river and/or canal flooding and residents have been contacted about getting involved in the project.

Lift plans get off the ground

Todmorden Town Hall is set to benefit from a new lift, after Cabinet approved plans to replace the existing one. Last night, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet agreed that the current lift was no longer reliable and approved an allocation of funds to install a new lift. Over recent years, a series of problems have occurred with the current lift, including a number of break downs. The Todmorden Development Board, which was set up by Cabinet in February 2013, has identified the revitalisation of Todmorden Town Hall as one of its priorities. The building is used for functions and events, and a new, reliable lift would allow the Town Hall to be more accessible, promoting usage. Asian

Gale force winds battered the country last week and caused devastation to a number of local buildings and properties. In Leeds, a woman was blown off her feet and required 15 stitches in her head, whilst the Leeds Grand Mosque suffered substantial damage as the roof was literally blown away. Insurance will cover the cost of replacing the roof with an identical copy yet to ensure no such incident occurs again, the buildings occupants are appealing for help in building a new, state-of-the-art ceiling. The roof was completely destroyed by the extreme weather conditions with firefighters called to the scene as the area was cordoned off due to fallen debris. The main prayer hall at the premises on Woodsley Road was also closed after suffering water damage following the destruction of glass panels in the ceiling. More than 2,500 people can be accommodated in the building at any one time and office manager, Bilal Salameh, explained how the local community has rallied around to help with the restoration. A spokesperson for the mosque issued the following statement last week following the incident: “Due to the recent gale force winds that have swept the country, the Leeds Grand Mosque has suffered substantial damage to its roof this morning (5th December). “The mosque currently has little protection from the weather and is suffering severely from many leaks throughout the mosque and thus is only partially operational at this moment. saw somebody watching us in his car through some trees as we walked down the road towards the crossing. “As soon as I stepped one foot off the curb, this car just came straight towards us, there was nothing we could do. I just pulled Muna back trying to save him yet the car hit the pushchair so hard that he fell out and a wheel flew off. “We were all just in shock after that. My daughter was in tears and an ambulance was called to the scene by some people who had seen

the incident and come over to help.” Since the event, four-year-old Munatazir Mahdi has been scared of crossing the road and is uncomfortable just walking down the street. His sister, 14-year-old Haseena Batool, was also present at the time of the incident and said she was concerned for the wellbeing of her brother as she saw him fall to the ground. “I was scared for Muna and my Mum because it just all happened so

fast,” she said. “We didn’t know the guy and that is what I was telling people who came to help so I don’t know why anybody would do something like this.” Ms Bibi added that two witnesses to the crime, a pair of young men, rushed to the scene as the car sped away, to aid the family. Suffering from shock, she was unable to take the details of the men and would like to appeal for their help in the investigation in hope of tracking

down the driver. “The two boys came over straight away,” she explained. “I didn’t get any of their information as I was too scared at the time and just wasn’t thinking. If they could come forward and help with the investigation in any way, whether they saw the driver or registration plate, we would be very grateful.” The hit and run was reported to police yet no persons have been arrested to date as enquiries continue.

Under proposed EU legislation, the meat sold in this country in the future could be labelled as either un-stunned halal and kosher meat. Asian Express delves deep into how this would affect the Muslim community in Yorkshire and the religous dilemma of eating stunned meat. All meat and meat products “derived from animals that have not been stunned prior to slaughter i.e have been ritually slaughtered,” would have to be specified as such under amendment 205 to the EU food information regulations. Although the aim is to allow consumers to make an informed choice, opponents argue it is discriminatory. “If you are only labelling meat provided for Muslims and Jews, you are discriminating against Muslims and Jews,” said Shimon Cohen, campaign director for Shechita UK. “There is no conclusive evidence to show our method of animal slaughter is anything but humane.” Some people fear labelling would cut demand for ritually slaughtered meat, causing producers to pull out and forcing prices higher for remaining consumers. One Bradford meat trader, whose stock was all ritually slaughtered, said the Islamic method was fine and this was another attack on the religion. “It’s just another way for right wing extremists to have a go. There’s no evidence that the animal is actually in pain when not stunning. “I think labelling would just add more confusion to the consumer. “Plus I think it would turn a large part of the Muslim community away from eating it as some don’t believe in having stunned meat.” Compassion in World Farming (CIWF), which backed the amendment, cited a report by the UK Farm Animal Welfare Council which claimed cutting the throat without stunning, caused “significant pain and distress” to make its case. “We don’t have a problem with religious slaughter, we have a problem with any kind of slaughter that is inhumane,” said Phil Brooke, welfare development manager at CIWF. Yunus Dudhwala, chairman of the Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC), which certifies halal products in the UK, said animal welfare was a “red herring”, adding that there was a relative lack of

interest in factory farming and animal transportation conditions. “If people are really concerned about animal welfare the rest of the journey of the animal [before slaughter] really needs to be looked at,” he said. Dudhwala said he would be happy for unstunned meat to be labelled if other meat carried the method of stunning used, such as gassing or electrocution, but believed that would never happen because it would be unpalatable for consumers. “We want to label fairly across the board,” he added. “It’s very dangerous how the EU tries to bring legislation through the back door which will make it hard for Muslims to practice their religion. “The premise that they use is that halal is cruel, but there’s no proof whatsoever that it hurts the animal. “As a Muslim community we need to know this is happening. The whole halal argument is hidden unlike minarets and hijabs, this will not come in the media unless someone voices up.” The Association of Non Stun Abattoirs (ANSA), an industry body representing traditional UK halal slaughterhouses, welcomed the news that the proposed parliamentary bill to ban religious slaughter of animals in the Netherlands had been withdrawn. It was reported earlier that the bill was withdrawn after a majority of Dutch senators expressed their reservations to the ban on halal and Kosher slaughter. ANSA spokesperson Mohammed Saleem said: “This is a positive, sensible and welcome step. “We are glad they have finally seen sense. The initial movement to ban religious slaughter was based on misconceptions and some political motives. “The welfare of animals is a primary concern for Muslims and Jews, and kosher and halal methods are both designed to be most compassionate to the animal. It is entirely incorrect to equate religious slaughter with cruelty to animals. “The fact is there are countless other real acts of cruelty being carried out on animals daily in industrial slaughterhouses, including under the guise of so-called ‘merciful’ methods of stunning, which merit proper scrutiny and attention. We would advise proponents of animal welfare to turn their focus to where the evidence actually leads them.” An agreement could be made with Jewish and Muslim slaughterhouses regarding the length of time that an animal is conscious before dying and the number of animals to be ritually slaughtered. The other UK halal regulator, the Halal Food Authority (HFA), which approves of stunning before slaughter providing it does not kill the animal (the HMC argues it is impossible to guarantee this), supports labelling of unstunned meat. HFA president Masood Khawaja said: “The labelling must be done, simply so people can differentiate between

different schools of thought and different beliefs.” Anti-labelling campaigners won the latest round of the battle earlier this month when a council of ministers’ committee did not vote through amendment 205. It could be reintroduced in the European parliament when the second reading of the bill takes place and be enshrined in law by the middle of the next year, although producers would be given a period to comply. Agriculture food minister James Paice said last year “the government would like all animals to be properly stunned before they are bled to slaughter” but that labelling should be addressed as part of next year’s consultation of European animal welfare regulations rather than within food information regulations. Maulana Fazal Dade, the Imam at the Abu Bakar Mosque on Leeds Road took part in a study a few years ago. It involved going to a slaughter house which stunned chickens before killing them, and assessing whether they regained consciousness after stunning, therefore determining if they were dead before slaughter or not. Out of a sample of 10 chickens two did not regain consciousness. “The practice of rendering animals unconscious before slaughtering, which is carried out in different ways, consists of a number of objectionable elements, for example. “If this act is such that it causes the animal to lose all its senses and consciousness completely, then there is a risk that it will have caused the animal’s death before slaughter, especially if the animal was weak or ill. “If this act is such that it does not cause the animal to lose all its senses and consciousness completely (such as a mild electrical shock that merely immobilizes the animal), then there is a strong possibility that the animal’s pain and suffering will have been unnecessarily increased, since the pain of slaughter remains due to its not being unconscious, and the pain and stress of the electrical shock will have been administered additionally without any need. “My view is that Non-Stunned Slaughter of animals is the Sunnah method of the Prophet Muhammad (May Peace be upon him) and is the correct method. If an animal is Stunned and is still alive before the actual slaughter, then it will be classed as Halaal, and if it dies before the actual slaughter, then it will not be Halaal.”

Highest Honour for Aagrah’s Aslam

Aagrah’s Managing Director Mohammed Aslam MBE, better known as Aslam to his family and friends had the highest honour bestowed upon him last week, receiving an Honorary Fellowship by Bradford College. The youngest of three brothers, Aslam came to the UK in 1967. After a short spell working for London Transport as a Bus Driver, he moved to Bradford to join his brother Mohammed Sabir, now Aagrah Chairman to work in the family business. Building on the foundations laid by Sabir and other family members, his entrepreneurial skills, coupled with a desire to succeed played a key role in the business as it began to show signs of growth in the early eighties. Widely acknowledged as putting Kashmiri cuisine on the UK map, Aagrah

Restaurants continued to develop and promote their homeland cooking as a distinct cuisine in its own right as its popularity grew. This inspired Aslam to train and become a professional chef learning how to cook authentic Kashmiri family recipes on a commercial level. More than 3 decades on, Aagrah and Aslam have won some of the industry’s highest accolades, with the most recent being Special Recognition Award presented by Prime Minister David Cameron at the British Curry Awards 2013 for which he received a long standing ovation. The University of the Year is awarded to ‘an institution that has demonstrated exceptional performance in the past academic year’. The winner should also evidence ‘particular bold, imaginative and innovative initiatives that have advanced the institution’s reputation. Last year the university won the Entrepreneurial University of the Year awards.

A Bradford primary school pupil has beaten more than 15,000 children nationwide to scoop the top award in an online mathematics competition. St Matthews CE primary school pupil, Alisha Sharif clinched the accolade after answering 1,000 questions correctly, faster than anybody else in the country. The Year Six pupil averaged a time of just 1.7seconds per question and was one of only two children across the country to get a perfect score. In total, 15,809 children took part in the Sumdog challenge, answering over 3.5million questions. Topics such as the 13 timetables, and online maths battles with other students across the country, all had to be tackled by the avid number cruncher who flew through the test.

Speaking after claiming the top spot, Alisha says she was ‘excited and very happy’ to have won the competition. She said: “I had done some of it in school but finished the rest off at home the same day. From then I knew I was top because there was a leaderboard but I had to wait until the competition officially finished before I actually knew that I won. “I kept going on the internet and checking every five minutes and eventually my name was there. It was great.” The Sumdog challenge was introduced to the school by maths teacher Brendon Shanahan who believed the program was a good way of allowing pupils the chance to study at home as well as at St Matthews. With the school ranking third overall, out of 320 schools across the country, it was a ‘proud moment’ when Mr Shanahan saw the final standings.

“I was of course extremely proud of all our students for doing so well in the competition,” he said. “Alisha answered 1,000 questions, spending less than two seconds on each one, and when you actually take a step back and look at it, it is incredible. She was doing the hardest questions as well, which makes it even more impressive.” Headteacher, Mr Bob Curran, added his praise for the gifted mathematician. He said: “Coming third makes it really pleasing for the school. “All the hard work which the maths teachers put into the schoolchildren was rewarded by the pupil’s fantastic efforts. “It is also recognises the great strides we have made in improving maths all around, especially when you look at somebody like Alisha. She was phenomenal and I certainly wouldn’t back myself against her.”

Bradford team to tackle Europe’s largest zip line

Next month Rashid Khan, star of Make Bradford British, will brave Europe's longest zip line to raise funds for victims of Typhoon Haiyan, the storm that battered the Philippines last month. Rashid will be part of Penny Appeal's team of 50 who aim to complete the 500 feet high, milelong zip line in Snowdonia in January.

First, the challengers will experience a smaller zip line to travel to the starting point; a jeep will take them up mount Snowdon to around 500ft; then the challengers will be placed in a horizontal position, facing down, ready to zip line to the bottom, reaching speeds of up to 100 miles per hour! Typhoon Haiyan swept across the Philippines with winds of 147 miles per hour, leaving millions of people

without shelter, food and water. According to the United Nations, over 11 million have been affected by the devastating storm. Travelling through the air at 100mph will give the challengers an idea of the speed of those winds. Each participant is required to raise a minimum of £200 for Penny Appeal's Philippines Emergency Appeal, which will provide aid for Haiyan's victims.

Chapel Allerton’s number crunchers clinch top prize in city-wide tournament

A team of young mathematicians were celebrating a calculated victory last week as they scooped top prize in one of Leeds’ largest arithmetic competitions. In a hotly contested final, the team of four Year 6 pupils from Chapel Allerton Primary School overcame teams from 23 other schools to take the trophy in the Leeds Junior Schools’ Maths Challenge, held at the Grammar School at Leeds. The ‘fantastic four’: Kaustubh Bhatnagar, Adam Powell, Bethany Hare and Faith Hardy, qualified for the finals after success in the semifinals, which had seen almost 50 schools enter.

Maths Challenge title, he said: “There was something for everyone. Some questions were easy; others really hard and luckily we had done algebra in extra maths.”

Teammate Faith Hardy added: “We enjoyed coming out of school to do maths and liked the competition part of it even though it was tense. When I heard we had won I felt over the moon.”

More than 30 of York Art Gallery’s most significant paintings will go on show in Huddersfield on Saturday 14th December. Works by David Hockney, LS Lowry, Walter Sickert and Paul Nash are included in the touring exhibition Masterstrokes: Great Paintings from York Art Gallery. Kirklees Council has applied to the courts to remove a traveller encampment at Princess Mary Playing Fields in Littletown. The court date has now been set at Huddersfield County Court for the 17th December. Cllr Shabir Pandor, Cabinet member for Resources, said: “The council is committed to dealing with this issue quickly for the benefit of local residents. “There have been encampments across North Kirklees this year and the council always works quickly to deal with them by applying for possession through the courts. “I fully understand the disruption that travellers can cause and I am determined that this will be kept to the minimum we can achieve.”

Wakefield Council is to re-name a popular city centre square in honour of Nelson Mandela. Wakefield’s Mandela Square – currently in The Springs – will be relocated to Crown Court Yard, off Wood Street, which will be renamed in a ceremony in the New Year. The decision by a full meeting of Wakefield Council came as councillors paid tributes to Nelson Mandela, who died on December 5, and expressed their condolences to his family and the people of South Africa. Council Leader Cllr Peter Box said re-locating Mandela Square to a popular and award-winning open space in the heart of the city was a fitting and tangible way of keeping Nelson Mandela’s memory alive. “Nelson Mandela fought for freedom and democracy, spending 27 years of his life in prison. Freedom is hard won but easily lost. “The struggle he started is not yet finished. If we are to honour his memory, we must continue to fight for freedom across the world,” said Cllr Box.

RACISM PROGRESS: With figures of racism staggeringly high, is Britain truly multi-cultural?

Racism in schools has been pushed to the fore in the past few days with people questioning how big the issue actually is. Britain and in particular Yorkshire is seen as a multi-cultural area where people accept each other from all different walks of life. Last year, in light of former headteacher Ray Honeyford’s death, alongside recent statistics, is Britain as understanding as is made out? It has been revealed that racism is the biggest type of bullying at schools in Bradford accounting for 75 per cent of incidents during previous academic years. A total of 344 bullying incidents were reported by schools in the district between September, 2010, and July, 2011, of which 260 were deemed to be racist, figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request show. Last term, from September to December, racist incidents accounted for more than half of the 113 recorded bullying incidents. Other types of bullying reported

by schools during this period include incidents relating to disability, family nationality or lifestyle, homophobia, gender and religion. Councillor Ralph Berry, Bradford Council’s executive member for children and young people’s services, said: “There’s been a general move to address these issues clearly at the earliest possible opportunity. “That’s resulted in a better focus on recording of incidents. I don’t know whether that means there are more. I think it’s extremely important bullying incidents are reported properly.” Former Bradford Headteacher, Ray Honeyford sparked a national scandal in 1984 when he wrote an article warning that “Asian ghettoes” would be created within the country’s inner cities. It criticised councils for allowing children to be “sent to the Indian sub-continent” during term time and also hit out at what he called propaganda from “multi- racial zealots” and council bureaucracies which he argued made freedom of speech difficult to maintain. At the time he was the headmaster of Drummond Middle School which served a

predominantly Asian area of Bradford. The reaction to his article led to protests, reported death threats being made against him and the then Lord Mayor of Bradford Mohammed Ajeeb calling for him to be removed from his job. Mr Ajeeb said he had shown “an inclination to demonstrate prejudice against certain sections of the community.” However in 2004, 20 years later, Trevor Philips, the head of the Commission for Racial Equality and a former Labour parliamentary candidate, asserted that children needed to be given a “core of Britishness.” Multiculturalism, he argued, suggested ‘separateness’. In words reminiscent of Mr Honeyford's, yet more delicately put, he said: “For instance, I hate the way this country has lost Shakespeare. That sort of thing is bad for immigrants.” Almost 30 years have passed since Honeyford first made these comments yet have times really moved on? If racism is still prevalent within schools it seems Britain has a long way to go before it really becomes a fair, multicultural state.

New support group opens in the city

A former jobs and skills centre has been given a new lease of life as a safe space to support people with mental health needs. The Vale Circles centre was officially opened on the 4th December with a day of entertainment and events which included a steel band and salsa dancing. The new service, based on Tunstall Road in Beeston, helps people with mental health needs to access education and training while they

also work on their recovery. Activities currently being run at the centre include art, pottery and music workshops as well as angling and cooking groups. Vale Circles was named by service users, who have relocated from the previous mental health service at The Vale in Hunslet. They said they wanted to keep some aspect of the name because of their good memories of the old venue. Councillor Adam Ogilvie, Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, said: “Those who used The Vale centre formed a real attachment to it, largely because of their positive experiences and memories of what they were able to accomplish there. “Now, thanks to the opening of this new service, those people and

others who come to use the centre can continue to learn, develop and recover in a new, friendly and accessible place that has been built with their needs in mind.” He added: “The supportive and empowering environment of Vale Circles is already helping service users to get involved in a programme of interesting and engaging activities which give them the skills they need to live independent lives.” The opening of the new centre is part of a major modernisation programme of mental health day services across the city which aims to challenge the stigma around mental health and help those who attend to get involved in a wider range of mainstream activities. Around 34 people access Vale Circles every day, with more than 140 people regularly attending.

New figures show that attainment in Kirklees primary schools has improved overall in 2012/13. The percentage of Kirklees pupils gaining at least Level 4 in reading, writing and mathematics (the main indicator) was 74 per cent, an increase of two per cent on last year. The local Key Stage 2 figures, released by the Department for Education, are broadly in line with the national average. More new data – this time published by Ofsted, the education watchdog – shows that Kirklees is in the top five local authorities across the whole of Yorkshire and Humber for the ratio of pupils who attend a good or outstanding primary school.

Young Muslim men are turning away from religion in their droves because of the oldfashion attitudes in Britain’s mosques, according to the Prison Service’s Muslim advisor. Ahtsham Ali said it was one of the reasons why a growing number of Muslims are turning to crime and finding themselves in prison. We take a look at how Yorkshire’s Muslim communities feel about this and whether old fashioned Imams need to change their ways. Mr Ali also blamed family breakdown, problems resulting from arranged marriages, drugs and the absence of male role models. The cleric was highly critical of UK mosques for failing to understand young Muslims raised in Britain and said a main factor was that most import foreign imams who cannot speak English and focus only on religious rituals. Mr Ali, who has been the Prison Service’s adviser for eight-and-a-half-years, said: “Most will get imams imported from other countries who can’t speak English. More importantly they can’t relate to second and third-generation youngsters growing up here. “It is a tragedy. I have seen youngsters, the next generation, just totally switch off from it. This is dangerous. It allows others to take advantage, to take up the vacuum.” In March 2010, 10,358 of the 85,184 people in prison were Muslim, while there has been a steep rise in the number of Muslims behind bars over the past two decades, according to the National Offender Management Service. Cllr Abid Hussain, who is also senior vicepresident of the same Mosque Committee said the language barrier was a prominent problem and noted that kids often lost interest because they couldn’t understand Urdu or Punjabi. “Up until a few months ago the teachers were having problems speaking English which obviously caused some difficulties,” he said. The Madni Jamia Mosque in Bradford has been doing things a little differently for a while now. Offering madrassas in English as well as recently hosting a careers drop-in day, the Thornbury road mosque is moving with the times. Mosque General Secretary, Abdul Sattar said: “It's different to when we grew up when we could not understand Urdu very well. Mosques should be teaching in English as well as it’s the mother tongue of many of the children. “You’ll find that the children learn quicker and they remember more, which they can put into their own lives.” Discussing other reasons why he believed the numbers are on the rise, Mr Ali added: “There is a lot of family breakdown happening now. The divorce rate is very high. I think there is a struggle for those who have been born and brought up here and their acceptance of arranged marriage.” Mr Ali urged mosques to become more accessible to the young, for faith leaders to make religion fun and put more emphasis on

Wakefield Council’s key decision makers are to discuss plans to relocate High Well School at South Hiendley as the current site is unsuitable. The report to Cabinet on the 17th December, recommends relocating High Well School to a building that is more appropriate to support the school to take forward the changes required for the development of a high-quality education facility for young people with emotional, social and behavioural difficulties in Wakefield. Alternative sites have been identified from existing school buildings that are now surplus to other education needs; these are the former Chequerfield Infant School site in Pontefract and the Castle Grove Infant School site in Sandal.

As the district counts down to Christmas, huge crowds have joined in the festivities in Wakefield with over 50,000 people enjoying the three-day Wakefield Christmas Festival. The city centre was full of Christmas spirit for the festival from 22nd to 24th November, with a traditional Christmas market for those festive gifts and seasonal tasty treats. There was also plenty to keep families entertained with visits from Santa’s reindeers, street entertainment, creative crafts and children’s rides. The Christmas Festival also coincided with the opening of Wakefield’s ice skating rink in the Bull Ring. The ice rink has been a sell-out every weekend since it opened and with it running every day until Christmas Eve (Tuesday 24th December) there’s still chance to have a go.

exact opposite; it’s not the way to teach them with force. “It’s about wanting to learn about your religion and when you have those bad memories of getting hit, you will always associate your religion with those memories.” Wajida now self schools her son at home and said it was the best decision she’d ever made. She added: “Yes sending your kids to the mosque is a great thing and we need to encourage this. “But I find teaching them yourself builds a greater bond between you and them, something that you will remember forever. “I remember my mum taught me how to read the Quran and it was brilliant.” A 21-year-old man of Bradford, wanting only to be referred to as Zaf has just served a short prison sentence for assault and he blames the pressures of society for the reasons in high prison rates among Muslims. “Yes we do have a problem in our Mosques, one of which is the Imams that are in them. “Most of the ones in Bradford don’t speak a word of English and just continue to do the same things, then we wonder why there are so many problems. “We need English speakers and those with knowledge to guide the youth of today.” Ayub Iqbal, a crime solicitor from Leeds sees a lot of Muslim clients. He speaks about his thoughts of the situation: “Most of my clients are Asian. Now that’s not just because there are a lot of Asians in Leeds and Bradford, it’s because a lot of Asians are getting into crime. “Now there must be a reason for that. I personally blame lack of education. While I do think some of our imams are a bit out of touch, even non-Muslims can be criminals.” However, one Bradford imam, Fiaz Ahmed said old-school teaching needs to be preserved for fear of losing traditions. He said: “I think most imams do a good job in not only following their religion but encouraging others to learn as well.”

follow us on twitter: The salwar kameez is a traditional South Asian dress and will have at some stage, been worn by countless British Pakistanis up and down the country. One group of people who this dress has become linked to, arguably more than any other, are taxi drivers. In part two of Asian Express’s ‘Great Big Taxi Debate’ we ask what the consensus is about drivers wearing salwar kameez or whether a uniform would be a more professional alternative. Around Yorkshire, in particular, there is an abundance of Pakistani taxi drivers, many of whom started their trade decades ago. However, there are a large number of cabbies who will opt to wear traditional clothing while on the job and this has caused a flurry of mixed comments from the Asian community itself over the years. Whether it is for convenience or other reasons, there’s growing debate on whether Asians need to change their ways. Mafooz Hussain, a taxi driver working with a Leeds private car hire firm, agreed there needed to be a stricter dress code to ensure more professionalism from taxi drivers. He considers them as one on the frontline of representing the South Asian communities. “I think many Asians don’t take the job seriously enough to be honest, and it’s a hell of an important job. “I think we need more professional-looking drivers. If we wear uniforms for example people respect you a lot more, whereas you see many who put their salwar kameez on, which they’ve probably had on while a sleep, and then just jump into their taxis and turn up to work. “Many of them don’t even leave their cabs because they don’t want anyone to see what they’re wearing. I’d say that if they’re embarrassed themselves, then it’s a good indicator that they need to wear something decent. If you have respect for how you look then others will treat you with some respect in return. “I really do think customers who are seeing Asian taxi drivers in salwar kameez, all the old stereotypes come flooding back.” The 48-year-old of Leeds said Asians needed to move on with the times. He argues it’s not really a religious thing and was more of a cultural tradition so didn’t see what the problem was in changing it. He added: “Yes I understand a lot of them went into the trade when they first came into this country, but things were different then. Things have changed now and we have to change as well. “It definitely puts people off. If you give off a good image then people are going to respect you. “If I wasn’t Asian and got into a cab with a driver who had a full length beard, oily hair and salwar kameez on, I would feel a bit weird as well.” Mafooz said everybody must work harder to look after their customers and feel safe and comfortable in their presence. He added: “A lot of drivers don’t even speak to their passengers, sometimes because they can’t speak English too well, but also because

they can’t be bothered – that can come across as being rude. “I just hope that we wake up as a community and start moving with the times, because what we do is very difficult and the hours are long. We want to reverse the negative stereotypes that have been created.” There was an outcry last year in Pendle after a council proposed a dress code that outlawed traditional Asian clothing. Taxi drivers claimed racial discrimination. The borough council wanted a stricter dress code to smarten up the drivers. Tracksuits, shorts, football and rugby tops, beachwear, short skirts, short dresses and flip flops were due to be banned, as well as dirty or ripped clothing, and items with “offensive” or “suggestive” words or graphics. The majority of Pendle's taxi drivers are Asian men, and many felt the rules discriminated against them. In a report to a meeting considering the plans, the council said: “Whilst Pendle council does not wish to impose such standards

by way of conditions to any licence, we expect, however, that such standards will be maintained at all times." Mr *********of Bradford who thinks drivers should be able to wear what they want, said: “A lot of taxi drivers around here are Asian and you can't force Asian people to adhere to a code that doesn't include their national dress. “As long as the taxi drivers look smart and presentable there shouldn't be a problem. “It’s ridiculous to suggest imposing a dress code. “Some people do wear the salwar kameez because they are in and out of mosque quite a lot. So this means that you are stopping people from adequately practicing their faith which I definitely do not agree with.” Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation, said taxi drivers could look smart in traditional dress. He said that it would not be acceptable to tell people to change clothing they wore for religious

requirements or duties. “People spend more time tackling real issues such as the safety of taxi drivers instead of pointing the finger,” he said. Helen Whitecroft a 21-year-old university student said she regularly used taxis after going out with her friends. She added: “I don’t really see it as a big problem, I don’t really look at what people are wearing when I’m in a taxi, I just want to get to wherever I’m going.” However, 23-year-old Ismail Basharat added the trade could do with being improved: “I think it would be much more professional if we had a uniform of some kind, everyone would benefit. “There’s nothing wrong with salwar kameez, but I think people will think someone is unapproachable in the dress, whereas a suit looks a bit more professional.” Miss Khan from Leeds said: “I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask taxi drivers to smarten up. I do however believe that negative

stereotypes of people wearing salwar kameez kick in more regularly. “The generic view of non-Asian people is that if you wear salwar kameez, you’re a bit dumb. I know that’s wrong, but that’s the way it is. “If taxi drivers respected this country and earn a living here, there’s absolutely no harm in requesting for them to dress in smart trousers and shirt. Men in Pakistan don’t have a problem wearing trousers and shirts, so what’s the big problem? “Has anyone considered that by ditching the salwar kameez at work in the UK is a positive step in changing the image of integration from the community? “I read somewhere that 60 per cent of white people in this country felt that Muslims are not part of British life. “We have to change as a community and all do our part to integrate as much as we can each allow to change racism and prejudices in Britain.”

MAN V FOOD Asian Express takes on the world’s famous hottest chilli, the Bhut Jolokia We like spicy food. Many of us have eaten the hottest they have to offer from both restaurants and street sellers here in the UK and abroad, and here at the Asian Express we ask for extra chillies when we get our weekly take-away order in the office. So, when the newsroom was awash with hearsay that we were to be in the presence of the world’s hottest chilli, the Bhut Jolokia AKA the ghost chilli, naturally we was intrigued. When the day came, the tension in the office was palpable as we were greeted by a small packet filled with the dried out ‘ghost chilli’. It quickly became apparent that most of us were going to ‘chicken out’ of tasting the notoriously fabled spice, which is a mind-blowing 401.5 times hotter than tabasco sauce on the Scoville Scale. Cultivated in the Assam region of north-eastern India and parts of neighbouring Bangladesh, this chilli is a match for any food lover, and we weren’t about to back down from the Bhut Jolokia. The Scoville scale is a measurement of the spicy heat (or piquance) of a chilli pepper. The number of Scoville heat units (SHU) indicates the amount of capsaicin present and is is named after its creator, American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville, who devised the method in 1912. Capsaicin is a chemical compound that stimulates chemoreceptor nerve endings in the skin, especially the mucous membranes. Foolishly, before trying the Indian chilli, we gave the pepper a quick search online – big mistake. Horror videos of people trying the Jolokia before being rushed off to hospital and statements from the Indian government suggesting they were going to use the pepper in hand grenades in the fight against terrorism didn’t do anything for our antipathy. So, with a pint of milk for company one of the lads at Asian Express began his climb of the Bhut Jolokia mountain. First, we prepped him by adding a small portion of black pepper to his lunch to ‘ease him in’. This went down relatively easy and so he decided to up the ante and take on the chilli solo.

take his mind off the utter distress he was facing. Finally, after around half an hour, he stabilised and was able to breath normally. So, it seems that in the ‘Man vs Food’ challenge mankind couldn’t beat the Bhut. We’d given it an enthusiastic attempt, but we can safely conclude that ghost chilli remains an undefeated champion.

A Bradford mother says she was ‘brought to tears’ after being told her seven-year-old daughter would finally receive a much needed kidney transplant, after a matching donor was found. Little seven-year-old Zayna Fatima Iqbal had been on the kidney transplant list since May 2013 after going into renal failure seven months prior due to a condition called Focal segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Since then, the youngster’s family has been appealing for donors to come forward who had the ‘power to save Zayna’s life’ and finally, last month, a match was found. Ultimately it was the donation of a kidney, from a deceased organ donor that was successfully given to Zayna, who is now recovering well in Leeds General Infirmary. Now, her mother, Najmah, recalls the moment she was told that a match had finally be found for her daughter and the mixture of emotions that ‘overcame’ her. “I will always remember it,” she said. “I got the phone call on the 14th November and I was just brought to tears. The time had finally come for Zayna; a match had finally been found and it was all just surreal. “You begin to think that the time is never going to come but thankfully it did. We got to hospital and the whole day was like a dream really. It is unbelievable.” Zayna, who also suffers from a condition called Global Developmental Delay, has been in hospital ever since the surgery and continues to show positive signs of recovery. With no need for dialysis any more, she has began to regain her appetite for the first time in over a year, and her mother says she is ‘getting back to the old Zayna’.

She said: “When you hand her over to the anesthetist and the surgeons, all we can do then is pray for her. We did know she was in good hands. “From consultants to registrars, and sisters to staff nurses, all the staff here have been amazing. Their attentiveness and caring nature during Zayna’s transplant will never be forgotten and we would like to thank them from the bottom of our hearts.” Zayna’s surgery came just one week before Najmah herself was due to undertake a renogram to see if she was a match for her daughter. However, following the passing of the unnamed organ donor, the scan was cancelled. Najmah, and husband Iqbal, would now like to pass on their thanks to the family of the donor who will ‘always be in the family’s prayers’. “When Zayna was in surgery it hit me that someone else has lost a loved one

today and part of them now is waiting to give my daughter the gift of life,” Najmah said, “they were in my thoughts and it just brought me to more tears. “Words cannot express the thanks we obviously feel towards this person and their family. I don’t know who it is but we have contacted them and hopefully it brings them some comfort to know that Zayna is well and that part of their loved one has helped save my little girl’s life.” She added: “It is a gift you cannot thank enough for, to give that gift of life is amazing. Move to new home gets closer for Rainbow pupils

Pupils from a Bradford Primary school got a closer look at their soon-to-be new home earlier this week, as children and teachers alike partook in a special tree planting ceremony. Rainbow Primary School will finally receive the keys to the Nelson Street establishment next week, from builders Kier Northern, as the finishing touches are applied to the school. The young tree, planted on Tuesday 3rd December, completed the landscaping aspect of the £4million development which will see the children and staff moved from their current premises on Manningham Lane. Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Joanne Dodds, was on hand to help with the planting ceremony, whilst also having the special privilege of having an early look at the almost-finished site. Children from the school’s Council assisted Cllr Dodds and also got a sneak peak at the premises which will cater for 170 pupils in the near-future. Amjad Pervez, Chair of the Rainbow Schools’ Trust, said: “Planting a tree is a very symbolic act. It demonstrates the great hope we have for this school and these children. We have planted mature trees in the landscaping on the new site, and they will grow and flourish as the Rainbow Free School does. “This generation, and their children and grandchildren will be able to enjoy the beauty and hope they represent.” The move will bring the children close to the heart of the

city centre on a convenient, flat site with its own sports field. The 40-year-old fire brigade HQ has been demolished to make way for a two-storey building with an inspirational prism-shaped room at its heart where children can meet, sit, and chat. Rainbow Primary is open to all pupils ‘regardless of ethnicity,

social background or faith’, and literacy, numeracy and cohesion are high on its curriculum, with no class larger than 25 children. In its latest Ofsted report, the school was rated as ‘Good’ and has been hailed as a ‘flagship free school’ by Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove.

Bradford teenager receives ‘Royal Award’

Travelling the world, navigating your way through the wilderness and dining with Royalty may be some people’s idea of a life challenge, yet for one local woman, it was simply all in a year’s work. Bradford University student, Ruby Kaur Takhar completed all three tasks and more for her Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, which was awarded to her at St James’s Palace last month. In order to achieve the accolade, Ruby had to complete five separate challenges which covered categories of volunteering, physical, skills, expedition and residential, whilst travelling as far as Cambodia. Upon completion, the 19year-old travelled to London to receive the prestigious award from HRH Prince Philip, in what was described as an ‘unforgettable experience’. “It was an amazing day and one I will never forget,” she said. “After all the effort that was put in to

completing the Gold award, to receive such a reception in the same place that the Queen made her first ever speech was something special. “Prince Philip was really nice as well. He was very interested in hearing about our residential stages and I spoke to him for about five minutes; what we said I can’t quite remember though, all I know is he is a really nice, funny man.” Ruby spent her residential stage in South East Asia as she worked in the COSO Orphanage in Cambodia. Days were split into two parts whereby the group of volunteers would take it in turns to teach the children English, whilst the other half helped construct the new building, regardless of monsoon conditions. More than 30 children, who were all charity dependant, regularly attended the classes and despite their impoverished upbringing, Ruby explains how their enthusiasm to learn was something of an inspiration. She said: “The children were really nice and were so eager to learn. They had all had this hard upbringing yet kids as young as five were telling us they aspired to be doctors and professions like that which was lovely to hear.” Adding: “We would travel in the back of a truck to the orphanage every day and it was really a culture shock. I remember one of the first things we saw when stepping off the plane was a whole family travelling on one scooter; a truly remarkable

site.” As well as the life-changing trip, a grueling expedition phase saw Ruby and a team of three Chinese students, trek through the Yorkshire Dales over five days and four nights, travelling eight miles a day. Using only a map and compass for directions, the team had to meet set checkpoints after “The expedition phase was really hard and communication was key,” she said, “I had never really spoke to my teammates before then but in order to succeed we had to work as a group, not individuals. “Perhaps the most bizarre thing I thought I would ever do was wake up on my 18th birthday in a field full of sheep but that is exactly what happened.” The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award recognises outstanding commitment to personal development and requires a minimum 12 months of hard work to obtain. Open to anybody from 16 years of age, through to 25, it is a life changing challenge and one Ruby would recommend to everybody. She said: “Not only does it look great on your CV but the character building and independence you gain is something you cannot just learn. “At the end of the day would you rather just be sat in front of the television all day with nothing to do, or travel to places like Malawi and Cambodia and help improve somebody’s life?”

MIXED BAG: Every chef has a different approach to South Asian cuisine

The

chef test We scour the county for different recipes for the same dish so you can decide which is the best In previous weeks Asian Express has delved deep into the curry industry, looking at keeping it alive by teaching a new generation of chefs authentic techniques. It is believed that the first appearance of curry on a menu was at the Coffee House in Norris Street, Haymarket, London in 1773, but things have changed dramatically since then. We have found that some rogue chefs were ruining the reputation of South Asian cuisine in the UK, using excessive amounts of salt and food colouring that had direct links to poor health for the consumer. Government authorities like Trading Standards and the Food Standards Agency have tried to monitor unhealthy ingredients, but chefs are asked to “voluntarily” remove dangerous food dyes from their dishes rather than being forced by law. Now we are talking to a range of restaurants and takeaways from different schools of cookery

and comparing their approaches to preparing the same dish. Furthermore, we have looked at what television chefs are promoting on websites and in their cookery books, and whether their lists of ingredients are any more authentic or healthy than a takeaway. We have been asking Yorkshire cooks and chefs to anonymously reveal their chicken tikka masala so you can compare and decide for yourself. Perhaps their might even be a recipe that looks familiar. There is also a recipe by a television chef thrown in there for good measure. Our findings have been very positive. Exhibit A and C have no traces of red colouring and the chefs assured us that they use entirely fresh ingredients. However Exhibit B features a tikka paste which the chef admitted he didn’t know its contents. It is these types of pastes that contain harmful dyes such as tartrazine.

It is important to recognise the fact that some businesses need to buy produce that is affordable and will allow them to continue trading, and food colouring is one way of sourcing cheaper ingredients. The other factor to consider is the expectations of the customer – if they are used to seeing a bright sauce then the chef has to keep producing it. Emer Timmins, a spokesperson for the Food Standards Agency (FSA), said: “All food additives, including colours such as tartrazine, are thoroughly tested for safety prior to approval by independent expert bodies, in particular the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). “An Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) is established for each food additive. This is an estimate of the amount of an additive that could be routinely consumed every day over a lifetime with no appreciable health risk. EU legislation restricts the use of additives to certain categories of foods and specified levels. These limits ensure that the amount consumed does not exceed safe levels, and that the level in food is the minimum necessary to achieve the intended purpose. “As part of its programme of systematic re-evaluations of all

food additives, EFSA has recently re-evaluated tartrazine, and confirmed its safety at currently permitted levels.” The FSA has asked the UK food industry for a voluntary withdrawal on the use of the following six colours; Tartrazine (E102), Ponceau 4 R (E124), Sunset yellow (E110), Carmoisine (E122), Quinoline yellow (E104) and Allura Red (E129).This followed a study commissioned by the FSA, and conducted by Southampton University (between 2004 and 2007) to see if these colours had any effect on children’s behaviour. From July 2010 foods containing the six colours, all need to be labelled with the following ‘additional’ information; ‘name or E number of the colour(s)’: may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children’. Ghee is also on the FSA’s hit list as it is considered to be extremely unhealthy and high in cholesterol. They urge people to use vegetable or olive oil as a substitute. The findings have been both enlightening and worrying, but overall it has cancelled out the stigma that all chefs use a bright red dye to create their chicken tikka masala and they take great pride in making something that is authentic.

A team of Bradford police officers, who have helped to slash house burglaries in their area by more than a third this year, are aiming to boost that figure in a crime reduction drive. The Manningham and Toller Neighbourhood Policing Team is teaming up with crime-fighting partners at Bradford Council and Yorkshire charity Community Action and Support Against Crime (CASAC) to review the security arrangements of Girlington residents. Operation Stationdale, which began on Friday 13th December aims to 'target harden' properties in the area against house burglaries. The team will be fitting additional security measures, such as window/door locks and door chains where necessary. Particular attention will be paid to properties with UPVC doors, to make sure they are fitted with anti-snap locks. Latest milestone for world’s longest wed couple Less than one month after celebrating their 108th and 101st birthdays, Bradford’s most lovedup couple reached their latest milestone last week. 88 years ago on Wednesday 11th December, Mr Karam Chand and his soon-to-be wife, Kartari, officially tied the knot in India. Now, after settling in Bradford more than 40 years ago, the couple are celebrating what is widely regarded to be the longest marriage in the world, spanning through more than ten

decades; the 1920’s to 2010’s. With eight children, 27 grand children and more than ten great-grandchildren the couple have family in all corners of the world, including many still residing in Bradford. Paul Chand, just one of the couple’s children, owns the Castle Pub in the city centre, and will be hosting a party to celebrate his parents’ marriage this weekend. On Sunday 15th December, from 2pm, a party will be held in the pub for the couple, whilst also doubling up as a fundraiser for victims of the recent Glasgow helicopter crash. Speaking previously to the Asian Express, Mr Chand explained why he believes his mother and father have enjoyed such a prosperous marriage. He said: “We always said we will keep our mum and dad stress free so they don’t have to worry about anything at all and that is exactly what we do. They looked after us all for so long so now it is our time to look after them. “It is always fantastic to have my mum and dad living happily together and seeing that in person is really special. “Parents are like gold,” he added. “You have to look after them because they are so important to each and every one of us. I would ask everyone to take extra care of their parents as they age and look after them, rather than sending them to a home.”

New entrance signs at Pontefract Park have now been installed. The work was commissioned by the Pontefract Park Steering Group which is made up of representatives from the Race Company, the Friends of Pontefract Park, officers from the Council and an elected member from Pontefract North – Cllr Clive Tennant and Cllr Celia Loughran from Pontefract South. This group has overseen a number of projects delivered in the park during 2013 including the fencing off and reinstatement of the large grassed areas just up from the main entrance. The group has also delivered the provision of over 100 parking bays, the reopening of the public toilets, the planting of 8,000 daffodil bulbs and the installation of CCTV cameras.

Sheffield residents are being urged to support local families in the lead-up to Christmas. Over 100 families in Sheffield have to resort to using one of 16 local food banks every week. Food Banks rely on the generosity of the public in giving non-perishable food that can be made into emergency food parcels for those in need. Councillor Nikki Bond of Sheffield City Council said: “For most of us Christmas is a time of rest, relaxation, celebration and fun but for people who find themselves in crisis during the festive season it can be a time of added stress and additional burdens. “Through this time food banks see an increase in the number of families they support and they are asking for your help to meet this increased demand.”

n the 27-year history of golf’s ranking system no fully fit golfer will have slid so far so quickly down the depth charts than if Rory McIlroy finishes the year as world number 6 having started the year as number 1. McIlroy will look back on the year that has been as one dominated by an off-course side show. McIlroy is at the centre of two multi-million dollar court cases; Oakley v McIlroy in the United States and McIlroy v Horizon Sports Management in Ireland. The catalyst for all McIlroy’s legal nightmares centre around his monster contract deal with Nike, with the young Ulsterman netting himself a 10 year deal worth a reported

The claim that Oakley have against McIlroy is that the young golfer and his management company of the time, Horizon Sports Management, did not grant Oakley a right of first refusal. Under the terms of the contract between Oakley and McIlroy, if any competitor of Oakley (on the facts Nike) put an offer on the table, Oakley were entitled to match that offer. What complicates matters for McIlroy is that the testimony he is relying heavily on to disprove Oakley is from his former Horizon agent, Conor Ridge. McIlroy’s legal proceedings in Ireland are against the said Mr Ridge. McIlroy has stated that when he penned the deal with Horizon he did not have the relevant business experience and was not directed to seek the relevant legal advice. The extent of the management deal came to light when McIlroy signed his lucrative Nike deal and the percentage that Horizon were taking from the young golfer. From all offcourse earnings this was a cool 20% in addition to a 5% cut for his oncourse winnings. Now McIlroy is seeking to sue Ridge in what he describes as an “unconscionable” contract which left McIlroy handing over $6.8Million in fees in just an 18 month period surrounding the Nike deal.

Horizon have been bold in their defence of these allegations, saying they have a legally binding contract and the success he enjoyed before he signed the Nike contract, when he had risen to world number one under their guidance, is compelling evidence. Last month saw McIlroy officially split from Horizon taking with him their former head of Strategy, Donal Casey. Casey has taken the role of CEO of Rory McIlroy Incorporated (RMI) along with Barry Funston, Terry Prone and Rory’s father Gerry making up the other members of the company. It is reported that Casey also suffered at the hands of Horizon as he was not paid a €500,000 success fee; rather he was offered an amount closer to €200,000. This was another factor in McIlroy wishing to part ways with Horizon as McIlroy states in Court papers that he was not notified of the dispute. In financial terms McIlroy is looking very healthy as he earns a reported £31,000 a day from Nike but he will want to get his game back to the time when Nike decided to make the Ulsterman one of the highest paid sports stars in the world. Asian Express Call for more Asian officers

A resentful divorcee from Birmingham who set fire to her exhusbands house, killing a sleeping woman, has been jailed for 14 years. Nussrat Khatoon, aged 39 from Cheshunt Place in Kings Heath, was sentenced after admitting to manslaughter and reckless arson. Her accomplice, Tina Andrews, 30, from Camelot Way, Small Heath, was sentenced to 10 years on the same charges. The deceased, Nusrat Begum, 36, had died from smoke inhalation and burns after the arson attack in November 2012. Police said Khatoon, in a grudge against her ex-husband, had also damaged cars and thrown paint at the house in the weeks following her divorce in September. Khatoon married in August 2012 divorcing just four weeks later. She then set about a catalogue of events where she damaged cars and threw paint at the house in Speedwell Road as well as making offensive phone calls. On one occasion, Khatoon had also followed the pair and assaulted her ex-husband. On 5th November, Khatoon decided with her best friend and co-defendant Tina Andrews, to drive to a nearby road where the house could be seen, driving deliberately without their lights on so they wouldn’t draw attention to themselves. They walked across a park area and approached the house where they set fire to a plant pot outside the front door whilst there were four occupants in the house. Three of the people could not get downstairs but managed to jump from the first floor into the garden causing serious injuries and broken bones. Nusrat Begum, aged 36, was asleep in one of the front bedrooms but was found in the rear bedroom by fire fighters. She had tried to escape but was trapped inside the property; she died as a result of smoke inhalation and burns. Nusrat had only been in the country for four months after travelling from Pakistan where her

marriage had failed. Following a disagreement with her family she had gone to stay with her friend at Speedwell Road. Khatoon and Andrews made no attempt to call emergency services and watched as the fire took hold of the house. The two women watched from down the road for a minute and a half before they left in Khatoon’s black BMW Coupe, which had been parked some way from the property. A passing cyclist called the fire service and took a photo of the blaze on his phone, which enabled detectives to piece together the exact timings of when the fire was started and where the two women were. Further investigation into the BMW showed the vehicle had made a short journey around the time the fire was set. Khatoon was arrested later the same day and subsequently charged with manslaughter and reckless arson. Following her arrest, officers found key items in her car - paper rolls with cotton on it like a taper (thin candle), a fuel can and a lighter. The BMW ran on diesel but tests on the fuel can showed that it had petrol in it. Detective Chief Inspector Sarbjit Johal, from the homicide investigation team, said: “Today’s sentences will hopefully provide some sense of closure for Nusrat’s family. “Sadly Nusrat was caught up in circumstances totally unconnected to her and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. “The fire, set by Khatoon and Andrews who knew people would have been trapped upstairs, turned into an impenetrable inferno. “Khatoon was very resentful and angry and as a result of her and Andrews’ actions, a completely innocent woman died.” Nusrat’s brother Gulfraz Ahmed said: “We had only recently been reunited with Nusrat as she had been estranged from us living in Pakistan. Only recently had we started to rebuild our relationship with her. “The reason the fire was started had nothing to do with my sister so it is terrible that she has to pay the ultimate price.”

With only four Asian officers throughout the whole of Northern Ireland’s Police Service, a leading body that represents officials from minority backgrounds is calling for more to be done to address the issue. The National Black Police Association (NBPA) says it wants positive action to be taken in order to boost numbers throughout the force. In 2011, a Freedom of Information act revealed that just four of the 7,782 officers in the country were from an Asian background, despite approximately 12,000 Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshi residents in the country, out of a total population of two million. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) released figures showing 0.54 per cent of their officers are from some sort of BME background yet insist no record is kept in regard to ethnicity. NBPA vice-president, Nick Glynn, said special measures needed to be taken to recruit more. "It can be access to training before joining, courses that explain how the service works and the good things and bad things about it. It is just preparation to get them through to the interview stage," he said.

Bringing art to life The National Army Museum (NAM) has secured £71,292 for its Indian Army Collection in the latest round of grants from the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund (EFCF). The NAM was one of the six organisations to be awarded funding from EFCF for projects to develop their collections-based work. The grant will enable the Museum to research and digitise items from its Indian Army Collection as part of the Museum’s extensive First World War commemorations programme and better tell the story of the two-million strong volunteer army India raised to fight alongside the allies at the same time that it was seeking independence from Britain. The new discoveries will complement the Museum’s £23.25 million redevelopment project, Building for the Future, for which NAM is working with community partners to increase accessibility to its unique and multicultural collection.

Free school in ‘Chaos’

A dysfunctional Muslim free school is ‘in chaos’ according to education inspectors just weeks after it was placed in special measures for failing its pupils. The Al-Madinah School in Derby hit the headlines earlier this year after a whistle-blower claimed schoolgirls were made to sit at the back of classrooms and non-Muslim female teachers were pressured to wear head-scarves. In October, Ofsted inspectors produced a hard-hitting report branding the school ‘dysfunctional’ and placing it into special measures. Now in a strongly-worded and highly critical follow-up report, inspectors have said there are ‘no signs of improvement in the school’, describing the relationships between senior leaders as ‘destructive and deteriorating’. Regarding the quality of leadership and management, it concluded ‘this school remains in chaos’.

Northern Ireland's leaders condemned Saturday the detonation of a small bomb in central Belfast that police said could have killed or injured people. The device, left in a holdall bag, exploded at about 7pm local time Friday in Belfast's busy Cathedral Quarter, near St. Anne's Cathedral, and no one was hurt, police said. First Minister Peter Robinson described the attack as ‘despicable’, while Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said it showed a ‘complete disregard for life’. IRA dissidents are widely suspected of being behind the attack. A warning was telephoned through to a Belfast newspaper, but the wrong location was given for the device, police said. It was left on a sidewalk by a busy restaurant and the explosion occurred as police were still clearing buildings in the area, which included a hotel, a bar and an arts centre.

Police are appealing for information to trace a missing six-year-old girl and her teenage aunt. Zeenat Abdala, 16, and her niece Lutfiya Salum were last seen at around noon on Saturday as they left their home in South Norwood, in Croydon, south London, to go to the library. Police were alerted when the pair did not return home. It is understood they did not arrive at the library in Lawrence Road. The youngsters came to the UK from Somalia earlier this year as unaccompanied minors and live in foster care, Scotland Yard said. It is believed the girls may be travelling to meet family who recently arrived in the UK.

British parents, fleeing the country after abducting their children, are more likely to seek refuge in Asian countries, according to statistics released last week. Statistics produced by the UK’s foreign and commonwealth office (FCO) reveal that Pakistan, with 35 such cases, tops the list of 10 countries children have been abducted to where returns aren't available under international law. Thailand, with 17 cases, and India with 16, come in second and third for Brit parents who are taking their children abroad. The total number of cases for 2012-2013 stands at 580, the second highest ever recorded and a staggering increase of 113 per cent over the last decade. Contrary to popular belief, it is actually mothers who are found to be responsible for the majority of the abduction cases, with approximately 70 per cent revolving around the mother’s role. Reunite is a charity that provides advice and support to parents involved in parental child abduction cases and has dealt with 447 new cases which

involved 616 children. After reporting a particular spike in cases after Christmas 2012, the FCO is now worried that Christmas 2013 could see a similar trend in child abductions across UK. The FCO has now launched a hard-hitting film ‘Caught in the middle’, to highlight the issues and encourage parents to think of the consequences before doing something that could do lasting damage to the children and families involved. Mark Simmonds, Minister for Consular Affairs, said: “I was very concerned to see an increase in child abduction cases. Parental child abduction has a devastating emotional impact on the child as well as the taking parent and the parent left behind. It can do lasting damage to a child's

relationship with both parents and their happiness. “These are often distressing cases for everyone involved and there are no easy fixes, but our staff around the world work hard to assist those parents left behind. “We are launching this awareness campaign in the lead up to Christmas to try to prevent parents from doing something that would cause significant distress to themselves, their family and most importantly to the child. “We also encourage parents to look for warning signs that their partner may be considering this. Once children are taken overseas it can be extremely difficult to secure their return to the UK. Many parents are not aware that by abducting their child, they may be committing a crime.”

GATEWAY TO TERROR: Anjem Choudary and the al-Muhajiroun network

A report launched recently, into the Muslim extremist Anjem Choudary and his al-Muhajiroun network is arguably the most detailed investigation into this Islamist extremist organisation, its structures and its terrorist connections. Published by ‘HOPE not hate’, who campaign to counter racism and fascism, reveal in their report titled ‘Gateway to Terror’, that at least 70 people who have been convicted of terrorism or terrorrelated offences, or who have actually participated in suicide attacks, have been linked to the alMuhajiroun group. It’s revealed that the man who narrated a recent 58-minute alShabaab video, threatening a number of moderate British Muslims, is from Tower Hamlets and has also been linked to the group (al-Shabaab is the militant Islamist group fighting for control of Somalia). Also exposed, are the growing connections between Choudary and the northern Iraqi Ansar al-Islam group, an affiliate of al-Qaeda, and name its British leader. It shows that Choudary has a growing network of contacts across Europe. While Choudary may not have been directly involved in terror plots, it has been investigated that he helped shape the mindset of many of those behind them. He indoctrinated them and through his networks linked them up to terror groups and supporters across the world. Many of those convicted of terrorism were active supporters of his group at the time of their arrest. Habib Ahmed, who was convicted of being a member of al-Qaeda, was their Manchester branch organiser. Mohammed Chowdhury, the ringleader of the 2010 Christmas bomb plot, was filmed helping set up a Skype interview between Anjem Choudary and Omar Bakri (al-Muhajiroun’s founder, originally a member of radical sect Hiz utTahrir) only three weeks before his arrest. Being one of the most wellknown Islamist extremist in Britain, Anjem Choudary is infamous for his outlandish quotes and controversial demonstrations, which often receive national and often international coverage. Choudary will, on other occasions, say that people have left

the group some time before their arrests so he cannot be blamed for their actions – but this conveniently ignores the fact that he and his network have played a crucial role in their radicalisation. Al-Mujahiroun is a hate group, pure and simple, and as such deserves our attention. Constantly feted by media yet treated as ‘clowns’ by many, it is by ignoring their threat that we let down the vast majority of Muslims who want nothing to do with Choudary. The truth is the actions of this tiny

The primary victim of al-Muhajiroun’s extremism is actually the wider Muslim community. It is also important to mention, that it was the actions of these people that led to the formation of

numerous times due to either violent or offensive acts. The two biggest spikes of support for the EDL occurred when Anjem Choudary’s supporters burnt poppies on the 2010 Remembrance Day and in the immediate aftermath of the killing of off-duty soldier, Lee Rigby, in May this year. AlMuhajiroun have a worldview that we do not share. They want to impose a system that is totally at odds with one that respects human rights, diversity and equality. In addition, their sexist views call for the subjugation of and discrimination against women. Choudary has called for Muslim women to be forced to wear the veil and stated that women who commit adultery should be stoned to death. Fundamentally, they seek to impose a system that is intolerant of difference, does not accept anyone or anything that fails to conform and that is totally opposed to democracy and free will. All of this is on top of the fact that members of this group, influenced by these hateful ideas, have been involved in the 7/7 bombings and dozens of foiled terrorist plots aimed at killing and maiming innocent people. Furthermore, al-Muhijaroun seeks to undermine and hammer a wedge between Muslims and the society in which they live by denouncing the idea of multiculturalism, as well as promoting and preaching the

dogma of separatism and exclusion. To borrow a phrase from a recent al-Muhajiroun network pamphlet, they force people to choose between whether they are “British or Muslim”, when the two are by no means mutually exclusive. Yet sadly, there are people on the right of the political spectrum plus those within the “Counter-Jihadist” movement, such as Islamophobes Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer in the USA, who use al-Muhajiroun to justify their own anti-Muslim hatred. By not speaking out against extremism across the board we are not only inconsistent in our actions but we leave the ground open to our opponents. Anjem Choudary might only have a few hundred supporters but their ability to cause terror and fear on our streets, bring a racist backlash down on mainstream Muslims and – ultimately – to divide communities is huge. No matter under what banner the politics of hatred and intolerance raises its ugly head we must be prepared to greet it with organised and determined opposition. The face of hatred is the face of hatred and the mask it wears is irrelevant.

Education Secretary Michael Gove has insisted that university leaders must withdraw guidance which endorses the segregation of men and women in debates and lectures featuring Islamic speakers. Mr Gove said the guidance issued by Universities UK (UUK) was ‘pandering to extremism’ and insisted that speakers who demand separate seating for men and women in their audience should not be indulged by the authorities. UUK chief executive Nicola Dandridge defended the policy yesterday, insisting that gender segregation was not ‘alien to our culture’. Ms Dandridge insisted that institutions would not enforce segregation but if participants were happy to sit in separate groups that would be permitted as long as there was no disadvantage. But Mr Gove told the Daily Mail: “We should not pander to extremism. Speakers who insist on

segregating audiences should not be indulged by educators. “This guidance is wrong and harmful. Universities UK should withdraw it immediately.” The row over segregation has sparked protests from students, and shadow business Secretary Chuka Umunna said he was ‘horrified’ by Universities UK's position. Last month a UUK report stated that university officials must consider both freedom of speech obligations and discrimination and equality laws when considering a request from a speaker for segregated audiences. It said that if officials decide to proceed with an event with segregation, they must consider whether a seating plan would be discriminatory to one gender. But it went on to say that if side-by-side seating was enforced without offering an alternative non-segregated seating area, it could be deemed as discriminatory against men or women who hold feminist beliefs. Ms Dandridge said: “We are not talking about universities enforcing segregation... In practice, if the people coming to this event said 'We do not want to segregate and separate out men and women', it is inconceivable that the university would impose it on them. “What we are talking about in practice is voluntary segregation and that’s what happens in practice if people participating choose.” Rejecting comparisons to racial segregation, she said: “It is possible for women to choose to be educated in an all-women environment. It's not something which is so alien to our culture that it has to be regarded like race segregation, which is totally different and it's unlawful, and there's no doubt about that whatsoever.”

Asian Express Bomb hoax

A man has admitted making a bomb threat on an aircraft which had to be diverted to Stansted Airport. The Sri Lankan Airlines plane flying from Colombo to Heathrow was forced to make an emergency landing at the Essex airport on 20th September. Alan Patey, 49, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court to communicating false information during a flight. Judge Charles Gratwicke adjourned the case for sentencing on 22nd January, whilst Patey was remanded in custody until that date. The Sri Lankan Airlines A330 Airbus, which was carrying 267 passengers and crew, was due to land at Heathrow Airport but was diverted to Stansted in Essex just after 7.30pm.

Unknown stories of Indian soldiers’ bravery and selfless sacrifice, highlighted through archival photographs and letters, will be exhibited at Sussex's Brighton Museum and Art Gallery next year to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War. Officials said Royal Pavilion at the exhibition would provide a fascinating account of how the royal palace was transformed into a military hospital for wounded Indian soldiers serving on the western front. Heroics of Indian soldiers will be a highlighted as part of Brighton and Hove's WW1 centenary plans. Exhibition titled 'War Stories: Voices from the First World War' will commence on July 12, 2014 and end on March 1 the following year. It would revolve around experiences of 12 people, whose personal stories reveal the impact of the war.

40 years of Oxfam in Pakistan

Oxfam is calling for more investment to go into preparing people for floods and other disasters in Pakistan as it marks its 40th year of working in the country this week. Since 2010, floods have ravaged the country and areas such as Sindh and Punjab have been continually hit, meaning that the same vulnerable people are affected time and time again with the urgent need of food, clean water and shelter. Country Director of Oxfam in Pakistan, Arif Jabbar Khan said: “In the past forty years, through our programmes and

working with others we have helped turn around people’s lives. When the floods hit in 2010, good preparation ensured that over 200,000 people were evacuated to safety with rescue boats. These kinds of measures saved lives and more money needs to be invested in this type of early warning and preparation.” Over the last four decades, Oxfam has helped pull millions of people out of poverty in the country. It has provided aid to about a million people after the 2005 Kashmir Earthquake.

Tens of thousands of South Africans stood alongside more than one hundred world leaders last week, as the world paid their respects to the one they called ‘Madiba’. Nelson Mandela, a global icon and South Africa’s first black president was publicly honoured at the First National Bank Stadium on the 5th December before his funeral, the following Sunday. Mr Mandela had died the week prior at the age of 95, and his life has been celebrated by all around the world. A leader in the fight against South Africa’s apartheid, Mr Mandela spent 27 years in prison for his political activities before finally being released in 1990. His struggles and efforts to rid the country of the white-minority ruling, was symbolic of that of the whole nation, whilst his work saw him not only receive the Nobel peace Prize in 1992, but also become an icon world-over. World leaders stood side by side at the memorial event, held at the country’s national stadium last week with members of Mr Mandela’s family also in attendance. Leading the way with the eulogies was US President Barack Obama, whose heartfelt sentiments were perhaps the most powerful of all the esteemed guest speakers. Addressing the mass crowd, stood in

the rain, Mr Obama said: “To the people of South Africa - people of every race and walk of life - the world thanks you for sharing Nelson Mandela with us. His struggle was your struggle. His triumph was your triumph. Your dignity and hope found expression in his life, and your freedom, your democracy is his cherished legacy.

Instead, he insisted on sharing with us his doubts and fears; his miscalculations along with his victories. ‘I'm not a saint,’ he said, ‘unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying’. “It was precisely because he could admit to imperfection, because he could be so full of good humour, even mischief, despite the heavy burdens he carried, that we loved him so. He was not a bust made of marble; he was a man of flesh and blood - a son and husband, a father and a friend.” On a day of unity, President Obama also performed a handshake with Raul Castro, president of Cuba and Fidel Castro's brother, despite the country’s problems in the past. The occasion was bigger than both individuals and it was respected perfectly in that manner. Desmond Tutu, the man who accompanied Nelson Mandela on his long walk to freedom also paid his respects to his friend. He said: “What a fantastic gift is Mandela, a global icon of forgiveness, of generosity of spirit, a person who invited his prosecutor, George Bizos to lunch at the Presidency. “The same man who visited the Afrikaner enclave of Oranje to enjoy tea and koeksisters with the widow of the architect of apartheid, Betsy Verwoerd. “The chemistry of this country began to be affected as a result of Madiba’s actions.”

Experts investigated seven instances of alleged use and found that chemical weapons were either used, or likely used, in five of those instances. The former general, who took power in March 2011, has earned plaudits and the removal of most western sanctions for reforms that have included freeing hundreds of critics detained under the previous junta. India reinstates Section 377 ANGRY: Many Indian residents have appealed against the decision to reinstate the former law

The Supreme Court on Wednesday reinstated a ban on gay sex in the world's largest democracy, following a four-year period of decriminalisation that had helped bring homosexuality into the open in the socially conservative country. In 2009 the Delhi High Court ruled unconstitutional a section of the penal code dating back to 1860 that prohibits "carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal" and lifted the ban for consenting adults. The Supreme Court threw out that decision, saying only parliament could change Section 377 of the penal code, widely interpreted to refer to homosexual sex. Violation of the law can be punished with up to 10 years in jail. The move shocked rights activists around the world, who had expected the court simply to rubber-stamp the earlier ruling. In recent years, India's Supreme Court has made progressive rulings on several issues such as prisoners' rights and child labour.

“It's a black day for us,” said Anjali Gopalan, the executive director of the Naz Foundation, a Delhi-based NGO that works on sexual health and led the consortium of advocacy groups defending the 2009 judgment. “I feel exhausted right now, thinking that we have been set back by 100 years.” U.S. actress Mia Farrow described the decision as "a very dark day for freedom and human rights," in a post on Twitter. Law Minister Kapil Sibal said the government could raise the matter in parliament. The government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was seen to broadly support the 2009 ruling, and some ministers said they opposed Wednesday's rollback. But it seems unlikely the government will risk taking a stand on the issue in the short term. General elections are due by next May and the socially conservative Hindu nationalist opposition is already gathering momentum.

Kim Jong-Un’s ruling of North Korea has long been questioned in regard to a handful of extreme incidents and the killing of his Uncle last week, raises more concerns about the state of the Asian country. The once powerful General Jang SongThaek was hanged on Thursday 12th December after being branded a ‘traitor’ by the state’s news agency, KCNA. General Jang was executed shortly after a military trial on the grounds of committing ‘hideous crime as attempting to overthrow the state by all sorts of intrigues and despicable methods with a wild ambition to grab the supreme power of our party and state’. According to the KCNA, the man who was once considered the second most powerful official in the North was ‘worse than a dog’. The full statement read: “Despicable human scum Jang, who was worse than a dog, perpetrated thrice-cursed acts of treachery in betrayal of such profound trust and warmest paternal love shown by the party and the leader for him.” South Korean media said they believed he was killed by machine gun; a relatively common form of execution in the North. The announcement came days after

Pyongyang said that Gen Jang had been removed from all his posts because of allegations of corruption, drug use, gambling, womanising, generally leading a ‘dissolute and depraved life’ and ‘dreaming different dreams’. Gen Jang had been believed to be helping North Korea’s current leader, Kim Jong-Un settle into his position as Supreme Leader following the death of his father two years prior. Gen Jang had earlier been stripped of all posts and titles, after the regime had accused him of corruption. State TV this week showed photos of Gen Jang being dragged out of his seat at a meeting by two officers, in an extremely rare public humiliation of a figure who was then demonised as a drug-taking womaniser. Gen Jang was the latest and most significant in a series of personnel reshuffles that Mr Kim conducted in an apparent effort to bolster his power. British Prime Minister David Cameron's official spokesman said: “If this is confirmed, it is another example of the extreme brutality of the North Korean regime.” Whilst a Foreign Office spokesman added: “We are concerned at reports of the execution of Jang Song-Thaek and oppose the use of the death penalty in any and all cases worldwide. We are monitoring the situation in North Korea closely in consultation with allies.”

Bringing light to the poorest areas

Three women’s journey to power their communities A UK based charity has given three illiterate women from remote villages in Bihar, North-East India, a lifechanging opportunity to introduce reliable solar-powered electricity in their communities, in order to transform the lives of their friends and families for generations to come. The Shining Hope Foundation, which provides grants to specially selected projects across the world, has partnered with charity ‘Karuna-Shechen’ to fund Phoolmanti Devi, Puja Devi and Lakshmi Devi to attend the Barefoot College in Tilonia, Rajasthan. The school is 760 miles from their homes yet the charities have funded the courses so that they can train to become solar engineers. At the college, these women, who have never left their villages until now, are learning the skills needed to be able to install and maintain solar panels. Lakshmi Devi from Barsurdi village, Bihar said: “There is no light in my village; we work in the night with kerosene lanterns, but only until 8 o’clock because kerosene is expensive. Sometimes when it is windy the lamps

keep blowing out.” All three women will soon have completed the six month programme and will return to their villages as ‘Solar Grandmothers’ – a title recognising the senior role they will fulfil back home. By harnessing the power of the sun, Phoolmanti Devi and Puja Devi from Chando will be able to supply electricity to 140 homes and Lakshmi Devi will work between the two villages of Kadul and Barsurdi, bringing electricity to an additional 80 homes. Once the electricity is installed, they will play a key role in their communities by setting up solar workshops and training other women. In return for their installation, maintenance and repair services, the female engineers will receive a monthly salary from the village solar committee. What is even more remarkable is that the women will achieve this despite never benefiting from a formal education. The 2011 census for Bihar showed that the state’s female literacy rate was only 46 per cent.

‘Threats from the US’

Afghanistan’s President, Hamid Karzai, criticised the United States last week, after accusing the country of making threats in their dispute over an agreement to keep US troops in the country beyond 2014. In an interview, published by the French daily Le Monde, President Karzai says the US is ‘absolutely’ acting like a colonial power in its attempts to force him to sign the bilateral security agreement by the end of

this year. The paper quoted him as saying: “The threats they are making, 'We won't pay salaries, we'll drive you into a civil war.' These are threats.” Washington and Nato officials say the pact is critical to the plan to keep thousands of forces in Afghanistan after 2014 for a training and counterterrorism mission. Karzai says he backs the long-delayed security agreement yet has so far hesitated signing it himself.

The wife of an American pastor imprisoned in Iran pleaded with a House subcommittee on foreign affairs Thursday to do something to free her husband. Naghmeh Abedini said that her husband, Saeed Abedini, went to Iran to build an orphanage but was imprisoned unjustly because of his Christian beliefs. She said that when her family's "nightmare"

began, she anticipated having to fight the Iranian government. But she feels shocked and deeply disappointed because she's had "to battle my own government." U.S. President Barack Obama pushed for the release of Abedini and two other detained Americans -- Robert Levinson and Amir Hekmati -- when he spoke on the phone with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in September.

Bangladeshi Uprising An Islamist political party has said it will strive to deepen the role of Islam in Bangladesh in an attempt to avenge their former leader who was hanged last week. Abdul Quader Mollah was killed for his part in committing war crimes during the country’s 1971 war of independence against Pakistan in which at least three million people died and 200,000 women were raped. Mollah, the former leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was hanged on Thursday 12th December, sparking outrage amongst many of his followers. The majority of the country’s people are already Muslims yet the nation is governed by largely secular laws, established in relation to the British common law. Despite the party claiming to be in support of the population, opponents argue that it is a fundamentalist group with no place in a secular country. Last week’s execution sparked violent protests on Friday as activists torched homes and businesses belonging to government supporters in a fresh wave of bloodshed ahead of elections next month. At least five people died in the violence. Meanwhile, hundreds of people rejoiced in the streets of the capital, Dhaka, and said justice had been served. Tell us about what you've been doing over the last year. A. 2013 has certainly been a very hectic year. I released my latest single ‘Aao Na’ in August and earlier in the year shot the video for it in a stunning beach called El Matador in Malibu (LA), where many music videos have been shot by some of my favourite artists like Beyonce, Mariah Carey, etc. The live performances have been very busy this year – across the UK, Europe, Thailand and the US. This year I have continued my charity work supporting women’s empowerment and also recently got involved with Sewa Day, which involved spending quality time at a Midlands based care home. Q. What genre of music do you enjoy listening to the most? A. I’ve been exposed to so many different genres of music throughout my life. As a child, I used to listen to all the old classic songs by Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and Mohammad Rafi – they were always my favourite. Apart from that, I’ve grown up listening to Pop, RnB, Bollywood, Classical music and I’d like to take an element of all these different styles into the music that I release. Q. When did you begin your singing career? A. I actually started out as a dancer before I decided to pursue singing… my first stage performance was when I was only three-years-old! I've been singing professionally since I was 16 and have been able to get lots of experience performing all over the world. Q. Biggest opportunity to date with your singing career? A. I was invited to perform at Manish Malhotra’s first fashion launch in London earlier this year and other events in the presence of high profile personalities such as Shahrukh Khan, Arjun

Rampal, Jaya Bachchan, Laxmi Mittal and other dignitaries. The Royal Family of Oman also invited me to sing in a huge open-air concert in Muscat, which was such a memorable and exciting moment. Now my most recent performance at a Global Afghan Awards Ceremony in the world’s entertainment capital Las Vegas has certainly made a mark on my singing career! Q. Favourite drink and favourite food? A. I certainly am a lover of food and everyone around me tells me I’m a big ‘foody’! Although I love all cuisines across the world, nothing beats a good paneer with naan meal… Indian food will always be my favourite! Favourite drink is a five-aday fresh juice – it feels good if I know I’m drinking something healthy! Q. Your favourite bollywood hero of all time and also one currently on the scene? A. It’s got to be Aamir Khan – his fame is more understated and I respect him thoroughly for the beautiful films he’s created that have an underlying message behind them – such as ‘Tare Zameen Par’ and ‘3 Idiots’. That’s what makes him a true ‘hero’ in my opinion. Q. Your favourite bollywood heroine of all time and also one currently on the scene? A. No-one beats Madhuri! She has always been my childhood heroine and I can watch her movies over & over again… her beauty and charisma is simply evergreen. Q. Best and worst chat up lines that you've had? A. Being an artist, I admit you do hear a large collection of strange pickup lines – some are hilarious! A recent funny one was amidst a conversation where he pointed to the clothes he was wearing ‘Feel my shirt… that’s boyfriend material!’ (it is certainly cheesy but it made me laugh!).

Pictures of the BMW M3 and M4 have leaked online prior to the cars' official unveiling. The images reveal the final production version of both models, which will make their world debuts at the Detroit Motor Show in January.

An official teaser video was released this week but revealed nothing more than the profile of both the M3 and M4 highlighted by neon lights, now we can see the models in final production trim. We already know the M4 Coupe will replace the twodoor version of the of M3, but both will be powered by the same 424bhp 3.0-litre twinturbo engine.

Coupled with the 80kg weight reduction, the M3 and M4 should hit 62mph in around 4.5 seconds - but no official performance figures have been released as yet. The new M models will be launched in the summer and pricing is expected to be announced closer to that date. But you can expect to pay around ÂŁ57,000 for the M4 and slightly less for the M3.

The Vauxhall VXR8 GTS is cheaper than a BMW M5 but packs more power Porsche Macan 4 cylinder engine confirmed It’s been announced that the Porsche Macan will be offered with a four-cylinder petrol engine by the end of 2014, ending speculation about the new downsized engine. The fifth model line for Porsche, will slot in below the three-launch models, which include a 335bhp 3.0 V6 bi-turbo in the Macan S, a 254bhp 3.0 V6 turbodiesel in the Macan S Diesel and a 394bhp 3.6 V6 biturbo in the range-topping Macan Turbo. It’s expected to produce less than 300bhp but improve significantly on the Macan S’s economy figures of 32.5mpg and 204g/km. In time this four-cylinder engine is expected to be fitted to the Boxster and Cayman, too, offering a new more affordable entry-point to Porsche

ownership. A four-cylinder Boxster could start from around £35,000, while the Macan fitted with the new engine is expected to have a starting price of £40,000. “The Macan possesses all the qualities that have made compact SUVs so popular around the world: a practical, flexible interior; the visibility and sense of security that comes with extra ride height; and the ability to traverse rough roads with ease,“ said Matthias Mueller, President of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “The Macan's agility, grip and steering precision are easily the best in class – and the 400horsepower Macan Turbo is certainly the most powerful in its segment,“ he added. Vauxhall will begin to deliver first orders of its monsterous 576bhp supercharged VXR8 GTS in the next couple of weeks. What’s more appealing is its price. It’s around £20k less than its main rivals – the M5 and E63 AMG – yet has more power than either and is priced at £54,999. Vauxhall say that the Eaton supercharger bolted to the 6.2-litre V8 has a soundtrack guaranteed to make your hairs stand on end. Based on sister company HSV’s new GEN-F GTS, the VXR8 GTS is the most powerful production car ever

to emerge from Australia; and with an on the road price of under £55k, allows owners the least expensive membership into the 500bhp+ club.

At the heart of the VXR8 GTS is a new supercharged LSA V8 (identical to that used in the recently launched Chevrolet Camaro ZL1), delivering 576bhp and 545lb ft of torque, an increase of 150bhp and 140lb ft respectively over the outgoing, LS3engined VXR8. Performance figures will be released soon, but bear in mind that even the naturally-aspirated VXR8 achieved a 0-60mph time in 4.9 seconds and a limited top speed of 155mph… The new VXR8’s Eaton

This car seems totally crazy, but the new Lamborghini Veneno Roadster made its bizarre public unveiling in Abu Dhabi on the deck of a 240m Italian military aircraft carrier. The €3.3 million (£2.8 million) Veneno Roadster is a roofless version of the Veneno coupe, which was unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, and is based on the Aventador. With its sharp, angular styling, the Veneno Roadster really looked at home parked among jet fighters. Thrust is provided by Lamborghini's standard midmounted 6.5-litre V12 engine twinned with an ISR transmission, which produces 740 horsepower, a significant increase over the Aventador's 691 hp. The extra power, delivered to all four wheels, makes the

Lamborghini's new forged carbon production method cuts production time significantly. Only nine will be made. “The Lamborghini Veneno Roadster is one of the world’s most exclusive cars with the most extraordinary performance,” said Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Lamborghini, commenting on the event. “We are honoured that Lamborghini was chosen to represent the Italian car industry in the UAE, as a perfect example of iconic Italian super sports cars, and that we have the opportunity to show the Veneno Roadster for the first time in Abu Dhabi.” Lamborghini also has plans to open a new showroom in Abu Dhabi, which they hope will boost sales.

Hall of Famer Waqar Younis to join cricket’s elite

Former Pakistan cricket captain, Waqar Younis, joined one of the most exclusive clubs in the sport last week as he was named an honorary member of the ICC Hall of Fame. The 42-year-old notched up more than 80 Test matches for the national side, captaining 17 of those and is considered one of the greatest players of his generation. A wicked bowler, Waqar was labeled the ‘Burewala Express’ for his reverse swing technique which sliced through even the greatest batsmen. His career statistics, of 373 wickets in 87 Tests, and 416 wickets in 262 One Day Internationals, makes him one of the most lethal men with a ball in the sport. In a first-class career spanning over a decade-and-a-

half, he snared 956 wickets from 228 matches with a best of 8-17. He also remains to date the only bowler to take five wickets in an innings in three consecutive ODIs, between 4th November and 9th November 1990. Speaking before his induction, the bowling pioneer said: “It is a huge honour for me to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. I simply cannot wait for the day to come. Joining such an elite group in front of what promises to be a full house in Dubai for the first Pakistan-Sri Lanka Twenty20 International will only make the experience more memorable. “As I look forward to the day, I'm truly grateful to the people who've considered me worthy of such an honour. The 18-year-old jumped at the opportunity to help out on the day and explained why he believes the campaign is not only fun, but also educatory, for the children. “When I used to join in with this, I just remember it being a lot of fun,” he said. “You get to meet lots of new people and obviously at first you might be a bit shy but everybody gets over it and it is always a lot of fun. “Initiatives like this are very important because there are a lot of incidents which may be highlighted in the media where racism is at the top of the game. It’s always good to remind the kids that no matter what colour they are, they are all equal.” Mick Driver, Sport Development Officer for Bradford City Council, helped organise the day’s activities and reiterated Imran’s statement. He added: “I have helped arrange kick it out events with Khalil in the past and am always happy to get onboard. “There were eight schools who came down today from different parts of the authority. Every team was made up of boys and girls from different schools because at the end of the day it’s not just about the football, it’s about getting on and mixing with new people.”

Supported by Manningham Football Academy, Oasis Lister Park Academy, Bradford City Council and Bradford City FC, the day involved skills and drills lessons as well as a kick it out workshop before an afternoon tournament. All teams were made up of a mixture of pupils from each school, with every competitor awarded with a medal for their participation in the day’s events by Bantams star, James Meredith. Khalil is a self-proclaimed ‘football enthusiast’ and currently helps run a number of local teams, as well as the Manningham Football Academy at the Sports Centre. His passion for promoting the ‘Kick it Out’ campaign has seen him host a number of events throughout the past decade and he explained why he believes these events are so important.
