Pakistan in mourning Parents bury children after Taliban school attack Pakistan woke up to a day of mourning on Wednesday 17th December after Taliban militants killed students at a school in the city of Peshawar. 148 people were killed in the attack on the military-run Army Public School, which includes 123 male students, as well as nine staff members, including a female teacher. Many of the children are those of military officers. The country’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced three day of mourning but people's anxiety focused on what the authorities can do to protect them. The grisly attack, which has shocked the nation has put imminent pressure on the government to do more to tackle the insurgency. Pakistanis waited to see what their government - long accused of not being tough enough on the Islamists - and the army would do to stem spiralling violence in a nation which has become a safe haven for al Qaeda-linked groups. Seeking to appear decisive, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced he had lifted a moratorium on the death penalty in response to the massacre. The focus was on Army Chief Raheel Sharif's visit to Afghanistan where the two sides, their relationship strained after

decades of mistrust, were due to discuss how to crack down together on militants hiding on their common border. People around Pakistan lit candles and staged vigils as parents buried their children during mass funerals in and around Peshawar - a volatile city on the edge of Pakistan's lawless tribal belt. Pakistanis may be used to almost daily attacks on security forces but an outright assault on children stunned the country, prompting commentators to call for a tough military response. The school's sprawling grounds were all but deserted on Wednesday, with a handful of snipers manning the roofs of its pink brick-and-stone buildings. Army vehicles and soldiers wearing face masks and carrying automatic rifles were deployed by the entrance. A news agency tour of the school revealed a place shattered by hours of fighting, its floor slick with blood and walls pockmarked with bullet holes. Classrooms were filled with abandoned school bags, mobile phones and broken chairs. One wall was smashed where a suicide bomber blew himself up, blood splattered across it. His body parts were piled nearby on a white cloth. The air was thick with

the smell of explosives and flesh. A day after the attack, Peshawar appeared subdued and many people were still in shock. More details of the well-organised attack emerged as witnesses came forward with accounts. It’s believed the attackers came around 10:30 am on 16th December on a pick-up van and drove it around the back of the school and set it on fire to block the way. Then they went to one of the school gates and killed a soldier, a gatekeeper and a gardener before the first suicide attack took place. Sharif came power last year promising to negotiate peace with the Taliban - but those efforts failed this year, weakening his position and prompting the army to launch an air-and-ground operation against insurgents along the Afghan border. The military staged more air strikes there late on Tuesday in response to the school attack, security sources said, but it was unclear what the target was. Despite the well-publicised crackdown, the military itself has been accused of being too lenient towards militants who critics say are used to carry out the army's bidding in places like the disputed Kashmir region and Afghanistan. The military denies the accusations.

I have not heard or read any one, in the last 24 hours who has been able to adequately articulate the Gravity of what we have all and the families of the affected children must be going through , so I am not going to attempt to do that .. should be enough for all those concerned about Pakistan , to know any form of Talibanisation is totally and utterly un acceptable in any part of Pakistan or for that matter anywhere else in the World..I would hate my children, family and friends to have to live under a fascist, intimidating regime run by a bunch of gun weilding thugs under the cloak of Islam ..I do not want this poisonous ideology to be peddled to our children wrapped in misquotes and wrongly

interpreted verses. A creed that kills other Muslims and non Muslims , subjugates Women and champions intolerance with impunity has no place in my heart or my World.. ‘Heart-wrenching’ trip to deliver aid By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A passionate volunteer from Leeds was accompanied by eleven other like-minded individuals earlier this month as they delivered vital aid to those most in need at this time of year. 23-year-old Hiba Tokan, from Adel, arrived back home last weekend after spending seven days with Syrian refugees in Jordan who have been forced out of their homes due to the civil war. As part of the Bradford-based Human Relief Foundation (HRF), the volunteers travelled to see some of the world’s most vulnerable in refugee camps and host communities. Describing the trip as the ‘most eye opening, heart wrenching and rewarding experience’, Hiba explained one incident in particular which left a lasting impression. “During the first distribution of blankets and food packets, we spoke to two men,” she said. “One of them used to be a human rights lecturer at Damascus University. He told us that his son had seen the neighbour’s child eating a banana the day before and had asked him for one. “The father said he was very upset, because he couldn’t even afford to buy a banana for his son.” Throughout the week-long visit, the HRF team helped distribute more than £25,000 worth of aid in the form of food, blankets and toys in Aljoon and Aqaba, as well as in the Cyber City and King Abdullah Park refugee camps.

The volunteers also visited Zaatari, the biggest refugee camp in the world, and just one of the many which the HRF work with on the ground, in supplying meals to 66,000 Syrian refugees every month. A number of accounts were told to the volunteers at the different sites, including husbands who spoke of being forced to witness their wives and daughters being raped in front of their eyes. The story of two disabled children, Luqman and Ahmed, who had recently had their medical assistance cut, moved the volunteers so much that they teamed up to raise over £10,000 in donations to fund their rent and their treatment for over a year. A Bradford Teaching Hospitals’ team whose care and compassion shone through when caring for a terminally ill patient has won the Foundation Trust’s Team of the Year award for 2014. The group from Bradford Royal Infirmary’s labour ward provides care for women during and after they give birth. In the past year, the team worked collaboratively with staff from the hospital’s palliative care team to support first-time mother, Nasreen Akhtar, 36, after she discovered she had terminal cancer. Together the group drew up a care plan for the baby’s birth and as Nasreen’s cancer advanced, arranged for her baby to be born via caesarean section in the labour ward operating theatre at just 28 weeks gestation. Midwifery matron, Sheila Nolan said: “Unfortunately the initial plan to discharge Nasreen from the maternity unit following the birth of her baby, so she could continue her treatment, never happened because

it became clear that she was too ill to continue with her planned treatment.” A team including the consultant obstetrician, midwifery matron, labour ward co-ordinator, consultant oncologist, consultant neonatologist, neonatal registrar, the MacMillan nurse specialist and midwives, came together to develop a palliative care plan which would see Nasreen nursed on the labour ward with the support of the hospital’s chaplaincy team. The proximity of the labour ward to the neonatal unit next door ensured that Nasreen could have easy access to her baby at any time of the day or night. The team also set aside a special room where Nasreen’s family and husband, Waseem, could gather for daily prayers. Nasreen was nursed on the labour ward for more than a month until she passed away. Mrs Nolan continued: “This joint team effort really enshrined the values of NHS Chief Nurse, Jane Cummings’ six C’s strategy of care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment. extra shifts so Nasreen could have continuity of care with people she was familiar with. “Our award is dedicated to Nasreen and her family whose courage in the face of adversity shone through and we were only too happy to adapt our nursing and medical practices so that she could spend quality time with her new-born baby. “Nasreen shall forever remain in our hearts and it was a real privilege to care for her. She has had a profound effect on the team and we will never forget her or her baby.” The team say they will plough their £5,000 winnings back into their work on the labour ward. Waseem and Nasreen’s family recently returned to the labour ward to personally thank midwifery, nursing and medical staff for the ‘first-rate care’ they had given Nasreen, which had crossed a number of specialties and the private facilities they had given her in the month before she died. They also praised the Foundation Trust’s chaplaincy team for supporting Nasreen’s faith which was upheld throughout her time at the BRI and said they were delighted that the team had received this

Young and old volunteers came together for a day of tree planting last weekend, with the ‘Muslims for Humanity’ team once again turning out in numbers to support the cause. As part of Dearne Valley council’s Green Heart Nature Improvement Area, the nature lovers were joined by the Green Fingered Worsbrough Wanderers, Mill Academy Primary School and Voluntary Action Barnsley, to help plant a number of saplings in Worsbrough. Members of the ‘Muslims for Humanity’ team, a scheme run by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA), aim to serve their fellow citizens and environment through various initiatives. They consider service to the environment as a core part of their British and Islamic values. Last weekend I witnessed a boxing match that above all was an absolute boxing masterclass by the man known as Amir “King” Khan (30-3, 19 KO) who displayed boxing speed, co-ordination and footwork, accuracy and impeccable skill to winning a unanimous decision (119-109, 118110, 120-108) against a notable and tough opponent, Devon Alexander (26-3, 29KO) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Khan demonstrated a notable change prior to this boxing match as he spoke with much more confidence without the brashness I have seen in the past. Khan was determined to prove that he belongs among the elite boxers in the division and was willing to prove this in the boxing ring rather than using words of persuasion. Khan finally looked more relaxed and composed at the 147 pound welterweight division that he claims is his natural weight. In the fight against Alexander, Khan dominated the fight proving hard to hit clean, smarter in his attack and less willing to take the type of wild risks that got him in trouble in past. Khan has previously acknowledged this change within himself as a boxer and has given credit to his new trainer as being the biggest part of his improved boxing performance. Khan said

The biggest question now is what next for Khan and should a lucrative fight with Mayweather or Pacquiao not happen next year then there is still other worthy and talented champions in the welterweight division that a win against will still secure Khan’s boxing legacy. A year to remember Boxing ace honoured in perfect end to 2014 One of Bradford’s most exciting boxing talents rounded off a nearperfect year earlier this week as he was invited to a special afternoon tea with the city’s Lord Mayor. On Tuesday 16th December, Muhammad Ali, from Keighley, dined with Cllr Mike Gibbons in an event organised to honour the Bradford College student’s achievements for boxing and Bradford. Ali is one of the latest stars to emerge from the Bradford Police and College Boxing Academy and is taking the boxing world by storm, with his most recent triumph seeing him win Gold at the Zagreb 2014 European Youth Championships. That accolade was just the latest of many prestigious awards handed to the sportsman this year and he said it felt ‘great’ to be honoured for his work. “I feel really privileged for the success to be recognised by the College,” he said. “It’s thanks to the College, since I enrolled on the AASE Programme I have improved a lot. “I’d just like to thank Mally MacIver, Kevin Smith and Paul Porter for all their help and support.” The Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Mike Gibbons speaking directly to Ali during the event was full of praise for the teenager and labelled him a great ‘ambassador’ for the city. “It’s great to be here in Bradford to celebrate your great achievements,” Cllr Gibbons said. “You have done extremely well, thank you very much for what you do, thank you for being a champion and an ambassador for Bradford.”

Paul Porter, Bradford Boxing Development Officer speaking at the event said: “Today is a celebration of what Mo has achieved throughout the year. “Finishing the year off with European Gold was obviously fantastic, but the fact that he’d won a national championship, the GB Tri-Nations Championship, Silver at the World Youth Championships and a Bronze in Nanjing, China for the Youth Olympics, then that Gold, is absolutely incredible. “It’s the sort of form that you expect from people going on and boxing at the Olympics and winning medals to have on their records. We’re so proud of him.” Sam Young, a former Bradford College Photography student was also invited to attend the reception to take photographs of Mo Ali with the Lord Mayor of Bradford and Boxing Academy representatives. Since graduating, talented Sam has now become the official registered photographer with England Boxing.

Ten up for BARA Decade of success for community cohesion project

The British Asian Rugby Association (BARA) recently celebrated its tenth anniversary with a special reception at the House of Commons. Established in 2004 by dual code international Ikram Butt, BARA has been a force for good in terms of promoting community cohesion across the UK through both codes of the oval ball game. The House of Commons event, made possible through the sponsorship of Greg Mulholland MP, featured a host of keynote speakers including former professional footballer and now Football Association anti-racism champion Paul Elliott CBE and Mark Pawsey MP, Chair of the Commons and Lords Rugby Club. In addition Seema Malhotra MP, Shadow Minister for Preventing Violence against women and girls, was present to talk about the White Ribbon Campaign that was recently adopted as a cause by BARA. National Sport England board member, Hanif Malik of the Leeds-based Hamara centre, and Qari Asim MBE - Imam at Leeds Makkah Mosque, also delivered speeches. Paul Elliott said: “It's important that young people have the opportunity to thrive by getting involved in sport. Last week, on Friday 12th December, a special plaque unveiling ceremony took place at the renowned site with special guest, Hazrat Shaykh Sahibzada Muhammad Habib-Ur-Rehman Sahib Mahmoobi on hand to mark the official 50th year anniversary. The Sweet Centre has been passed through three generations of the same family since the doors first opened in 1964 and current owner, Dr Zulficar Ali, said it felt ‘great’ to reach such a milestone.

“The Sweet Centre has been supported by people of all faiths, all backgrounds and all political parties since it first opened its doors,” Dr Ali said. “To now be able to celebrate our 50th anniversary, with all the family and guests, it is a great achievement.” The business was initially set up by brothers, Abdul Rehman and Mohammed Bashir, as they brought the concept of an Asian sweet centre and cafe to 110 Lumb Lane. A new piece of exciting artwork is now on display in Bradford after a team of youngsters from the city came together to spread a message of ‘peace’ through art. Young residents from Manningham Housing Association were joined by local artist, Razwan ul-Haq, in the Bradford Boogie Woogie project, mixing traditional Arabic calligraphy with contemporary art. After months of planning, and weeks of workshops, a final piece of art was produced, constructed out of tiles and reading ‘salaam’, translated to ‘peace’ in English. Last weekend, a ribbon cutting ceremony took place at Clarendon Court, on Lumb Lane, Manningham, to officially open the ‘two-metre by two-metre’ design. On hand at the event were the budding artists, parents, residents and staff from Manningham Housing Association as well as Razwan. The passionate artist said he has worked previously with the group yet this year’s initiative, funded by the Arts Council, was much bigger than anything anything he had undertaken with the group before. He explained: “I have been involved with Manningham Housing Association previously through doing drop-in sessions as well as entertaining at the annual mela. “This time, we decided to do

something a little different and attempt to fuse my passion of traditional calligraphy with a more modern approach. “The final design idea was from a young primary school pupil called Sehar Khan, and it is based on the work of artist, Piet Mondrian, who made the Broadway Boogie Woogie.” In total 23 young people, aged from primary school age to 18years-old, were involved in the project which also included a

number of workshops looking at different types of art, and trips to local museums in Wakefield. Razwan added: “It was great to have so many young people involved with the project and they were all so enthusiastic. “I really enjoyed working with everyone and I am sure that the phrase ‘Boogie Woogie’ has never been heard so much in Bradford.” The Bradford Boogie Woogie is now a permanent fixture in the city.

Bruised politician praises sentencing but questions why ‘religiously aggravated assault charge’ was dropped A drug addict, who assaulted Bradford MP George Galloway in a politically-aggravated attack in London earlier this year, was sentenced to 16 months in prison last week. 39-year-old Neil Masterson, kicked and punched the Respect MP for Bradford West as he posed for pictures in Notting Hill in August, leaving Mr Galloway in need of hospital treatment for cuts and bruises to his head and ribs. The 60-year-old former Labour MP speaking in court, said he believed he would have been killed should Masterson have been armed with a knife, and his family are now in a ‘constant state of worry’ whenever he goes anywhere alone. In a victim impact statement read in court, Mr Galloway said he was still suffering pain from his injuries adding: “I now need to have someone with me while working.” Masterson, of Kensington, had previously admitted assaulting Mr Galloway and a second charge of common assault against a man who had been posing for a picture with the Respect party representative.

Family’s touching tribute to son More than three-hundred people gathered at Bradford City Park last weekend to remember a teenager, killed in a car crash earlier this year, and to warn others of the dangers of reckless driving. The event was arranged by the family and friends of Saliq Malik, a local 15-year-old who was tragically killed when the car he was travelling in crashed in Barkerend in September. Suffering serious head injuries at the scene, he was taken to hospital yet sadly died later that same day.

Relatives, friends and guests attend road safety event On Sunday 14th December, people from all faiths paid their respects to the former Hanson Academy pupil with moving speeches given by Saliq’s father, Amjad, as well as from local councillors, MPs and Imam Muhammad Asim Hussain. Mr Malik spoke of the dangers of reckless driving and how it had impacted his family who were still struggling with the loss of their son. Described as a child who ‘would want to put a smile on everyone’s faces’, Mr Malik, speaking to the Asian Express previously, added about his son: “He got on with everyone. “He never liked to see anyone upset and would do whatever he could to make people smile. All the family loved

him, and the youngest kids would always play with him and looked up to him. “Our event is aiming to alert people of the dangers of dangerous driving, the effects it can have on drivers and passengers, as well as their families. We hope to prevent what happened to Saliq, happening to any other families.” As well as speeches, balloons were sent off into the sky in remembrance of Saliq, before a giant banner was unveiled with the phrase ‘In memory of Saliq, based on the consequences of reckless driving’ written across it, alongside pictures of the teen. A pair of white doves were also released into the sky as a tribute to the life of Saliq.

ILLEGAL: Two men in Bradford were found to be stealing cars and selling on their parts for cash (stock image)

‘Chop shop’ stopped Police have arrested two men on suspicion of burglary after receiving a report of a garage being used as a 'chop shop' in Bradford. Officers attended the garage in Banner Street at about 2.25pm on Monday 8th December, and found vehicles and vehicle parts at the location. One of the vehicles was a BMW 520, which had been reported as stolen from Pendragon Lane in Bradford earlier this month. Two other stolen vehicles were identified and parts of three other cars were also recovered. A 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old man were arrested and later released on bail pending further enquiries.

Inspector George Bardell, who leads the Bradford East Area Neighbourhood Team, said: “I would like to thank the member of the public who brought this illegal operation to our attention and would appeal to the general public to look out for premises, particularly industrial units, being used as 'chop shops'. “The kind of things to look out for are suspicious activity around motor vehicles, high-value cars that are apparently new, frequent movements in and out, and vehicle parts which have been scattered around the premises. “Handling stolen goods is a serious offence and we will do all we can to disrupt criminals who aim to profit from people's misery.”

A notorious dealer from Leeds has been jailed for six years after being found guilty of attempting to distribute drugs in the city whilst out on licence from a previous sentence. Rikinder Soor was followed by members of West Yorkshire Police on 26th November after receiving a tip-off that the 28-year-old was involved in the drugs trade once again. Following Soor back to his premises on High Ash Drive, Alwoodley, police then carried out a search of his home and found a substantial amount of illegal substances. Almost a kilogram of cocaine and crack cocaine, as well as some ‘Mcat’ was found in a rucksack at the residence. Soor was also found to be disqualified from driving at the time of the arrest. John Batchelor representing Soor, argued that his defendant was only acting as a courier for others and was receiving threats from people who had ‘lost out’ due to the previous conviction. He argued that his client would be discharged of his obligation if he had taken the drugs to its supposed drop off point that same evening. Soor admitted a charge of possession of cocaine, crack cocaine and Mcat with intent to supply and driving while disqualified.

A team of budding businessmen and women have just sealed their latest deal as they bid to become the champions of this year’s Tycoon in Schools competition. As reported last week in the Asian Express newspaper, seven students from Westborough High School are currently competing against teams from almost 200 schools across the country in a start-up business project. Pupils from Westborough High School launched their business, ‘Ethical Print’, at the start of the

year and are raising money for five charities, whilst also promoting community events, through a newsletter. Funding is being brought in from local businesses, which pay the team for advertising space, and with a target of £4,500, the team say they are on track to meet the target before deadline next week. Earlier this month, the team signed up their latest businesses during a meeting at the University of Huddersfield. The Year 10 pupils met vicechancellor of the university, Professor Bob Cryan CBE, as well as representatives from the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre, Santander Bank, plus other local businesses. Presenting their pitch to the invited guests, Ethical Print received a further £1,400 to add to their fundraising tally with pledges coming in from several sources, including Huddersfield Town Football Club and Huddersfield Giants. Lukman Patel, the Head of Business and Ethics at Westborough, said the team were extremely professional during their meeting and deserved a lot of plaudits.

“I think all the businesses were blown away by the quality of the presentation provided by the team,” Mr Patel said. “To get a further £1,400 is great for all the students as it will push them further up the table and just in time for the evaluation phase of the project as well.

Millions of data sources have been churned into a score presented from 1 to 5 for any used car on the market. A score of five is assigned to the most desirable models with one for the least. The figures are updated weekly and in all but one of the regions listed below (Eastern Scotland) the top car has changed in the last seven days. “This is the first time we’ve published a list of the most desirable

cars by region,” said Tim Marriott, Auto Trader trade solutions director. “And there are some interesting trends. Range Rover and MINI derivatives are in highest demand in three regions, with a further three top spots being taken by Vauxhall’s Meriva and Mokka. “But while interesting, we should also be clear that this is just a snapshot of the current market,” he added. “Desirability scores for more than half of the models on sale change month-by-month, so dealers can’t afford to stand still. i-Control constantly tracks the live market, to

keep dealers up-to-speed and to ensure the stock they buy is always working hard for them. It also helps them manage their forecourts, by recommending price changes to align with the live market.” A wider analysis of i-Control desirability data reveals a significant proportion of dealer forecourts with stock that is not in high demand locally. 20% have forecourts that return an average desirability rating of 2.4 or less. Police issue apology to Sikh taxi driver over turban burning incident development for police officers responding to race and faith based incidents – especially to taxi drivers who are particularly targeted whilst delivering an important service to our local communities.

British police have apologised to a Sikh taxi driver for not taking seriously a vicious hate crime last year when a group of drunken women attacked and racially abused him before ripping off his turban and burning it. The attack happened in September 2013 in Bishops Worth when the five drunken women wanted a free cab ride home to Swindon as they did not have enough money. But when asked to leave the cab they refused and attacked the Sikh driver, racially abusing him before ripping off his turban and burning it. When the police were called, they seemed more keen to move the driver on and did not show a willingness to take action such as looking actively for the perpetrators – who were hiding nearby. Only on the insistence of the taxi driver did the officers’ search in the vicinity and with the driver’s

support apprehend the culprits. The taxi driver went to the police the following day to get an update but was not satisfied with their response. After months of chasing by the victim and the assistance of an antihate charity, they were eventually informed by the officer in charge that he had decided to issue a mere caution to just one of the five offending women. The other four women who were involved in the attack were never prosecuted or even cautioned. Avon and Somerset police admitted they should have charged the offender rather than hand out a police caution. The eight-month campaign by the Sikh community in Bristol and later by the charity called Stand Against Racism and Inequality (SARI), the case was heard in court and led to a conviction. The victim has called for

assurances that police take hate crime seriously. The victim, who does not wish to be identified, said: "This attack has affected the whole of my family, the children are very, very scared, my wife is afraid to let me go out of the house, thinking that I am going to be attacked again." Interim director of SARI, Alex Raikes, said: "They (the police) didn't appreciate that it is like an attack on a person, for a Sikh it is very similar to a serious sexual offence, it's horrendous, it's a massive impact. “This result has been a long time coming. “It has taken over a year to reach resolution for those affected. “This is a case where escalation to senior officers was unfortunately necessary. “SARI hopes that the learning from this case can now be used to inform learning and training

Spreading Christmas Cheer A team of generous pupils from Bradford’s Iqra Academy were spreading the festive cheer earlier this week as they brought gifts and music to one of the city’s care homes. Pupils from the student’s council headed down to the Britannia Care Home, in Girlington, to present a bounty load of presents, including mugs, sweets and soft toys to the local residents. Christmas carols were also sung before the youngsters got the chance to speak with the elderly residents, and even share in some songs together. Ruby Hussain, who organised the project, explained where the initiative had come from and how proud she was to see the school represented so well. “Within school we had the idea of helping people in the community and although we had already done things like bag packing before, we decided this time to go and visit a nursing home,” she

Colours and tastes of the world in Huddersfield Popular festival returns, bringing international communities together

One of the most highly and welcomed anticipated international events at a West Yorkshire University finally arrived back on campus last month to the delight of thousands of students. The twice-yearly, International Food and Culture Festival, hosted by the University’s international student societies and sponsored by the International Office, showcased the cultural diversity of the University’s student body. University currently The welcomes over 3,000 international students, from approximately 125 countries, and such a large number brings an international dimension to the university as well as the town. To showcase their different backgrounds, around 35 international societies celebrated their food and culture by presenting guests with samples of their national

dishes. The cuisine on offer included culinary fare from France, Malaysia, Cameroon, Iraq, Vietnam, India, Hong Kong, Bulgaria, Libya and the Czech Republic, to name but a few. The food on offer was complemented by a range of performances from the students of national dance, musical instruments, traditional games and singing – “where else would you see Vietnamese robotics, Egyptian beatboxing, Zorba dancing, Russian rock and a Pakistani cover version of the hit Wonderwall?” Oasis’ commented one of the organisers. “The event has become a major part of the University’s events calendar,” said Festival Coordinator and University International Marketing and Events Officer Alan Tobi. “I am always overwhelmed at the

passion, commitment and effort the students put into this Festival and it’s a great opportunity for our students to make new friends and learn a little more about different cultures. “It was a magical experience for

In a productive day of action, over 200 bags of rubbish and general litter were removed from the canal walkways and surrounding streets by the team. ANNOUNCED: George Osbourne - the Chancellor of the Exchequer announces that listed Places of Worship can apply for a grant to fix their roofs

George Osbourne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, announced in a statement on 3rd December that a £15million government-funded listed ‘Places of Worship: Roof Repair Fund’ is open to receive applications from churches, mosques, temples, gurdwaras and synagogues . Congregations across the UK responsible for looking after listed places of worship of all faiths and denominations can apply for money to address pressing roof repair issues to ensure these historic buildings are weathertight, safe and open for use. Grants of between £10,000 and £100,000 can be provided, to help meet the costs of urgent work needed to be done (e.g. coverings, timbers, ceilings and vaults) and rainwater disposal systems (e.g. gutters, valleys, hoppers, downpipes, gullies, drains and soakaways). Applications for a grant must be made by midday on 30th January 2015, with awards to be allocated by the end of March 2015. The scheme will be administered by the National Heritage Memorial Fund on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. In June of this year, an electrical blaze broke out at the Undercliffe development, forcing residents out of their accommodation for months whilst renovation works were carried out. Although the building’s robust fire safety procedures and design stopped the fire from spreading, it suffered significant flood and water damage from the fire services’ attempts to put out the blaze. After months of detailed renovation work, which included the redecoration of all communal areas and replacing lounge furniture, residents then moved back to the estate. Amongst the residents at the celebration event was Mr Isharwal Lal Mistry, who moved back in to to the estate during the second week of October. Suffering from severe visual impairment, Mr Mistry was staying at Shakespeare Court whilst he waited for the refurbishment work to be completed and said it was ‘great to be home’. Extra care housing manager, Jaz Samplay, added: “Despite his visual impairment, Mr Mistry is very independent and so it was important to get him back into Dove Court as soon as possible and back into his

Navraj Gill, acting manager of the group, said the dancers could not have wished for a better audience and felt privileged to have been invited to help celebrate the important occasion. “Although we do a lot of work in the community, this is the first time I have been to one of these extra care housing estates,” he said. “I have to say, we could not have got a better crowd. Armed police shutdown one of Knaresborough’s busiest high streets and locked pupils in school last week as a vicious ‘hoax call’ caused chaos in the North Yorkshire town. On Wednesday 16th October, Police received a phone call

stating there was an “immediate threat to members of the public” at the Paragon pizza takeaway. Dozens of officers, armed with submachine guns and baton round launchers arrived at the scene to detain three staff members outside the establishment, whilst a fourth was handcuffed moments later. However, after a search of the

individuals and the premises, the report was labeled a ‘cruel prank’ which had been targeted at the innocent staff. Now, the Paragon employees have told the Asian Express about the horrendous ordeal they were put through, despite not doing anything wrong.

Leeds to stretch Green Belt

A proposal to help protect an area of land from potential future development was discussed by councillors this past week. At the meeting of the development plan panel at Civic Hall on Tuesday 16th December, councillors considered a suggestion which could see an area of land being reclassified from ‘Rural Land’ to officially become part of the Green Belt. If the change is approved, it would significantly increase the overall area of Green Belt in Leeds, benefitting the city in terms of safeguarding the environment and protecting community identities. It would also help to ensure a coordinated and planned approach for future planning strategy which aims to encourage regeneration and growth in Leeds.

Learn English in Leeds A new online service to help people learn English as they settle in to life in Leeds was officially launched in the city last week, with the Lord Mayor on hand for a special digital ribbon cutting ceremony. The Learning English in Leeds (LEL) website is designed to give providers and learners information about finding the right classes to help with key language skills. Also aiming to help residents build up relationships locally, the site gives people in established communities who want to improve their English more opportunities to learn. The launch event, hosted by Leeds City Council at the Civic Hall, was attended by learners from the council, The University of Leeds, Leeds City College and Leeds Language College. Those attending the launch saw a demonstration of the new site, took part in a quiz, and got the chance to talk to other learners about their experiences of learning English as a second language. ection 994(1) of the Companies Act 2006 allows a shareholder to take court action where they feel that a company has been or is conducted in a manner that is unfairly prejudicial to the shareholders. The case of Maidment –v- Attwood and Others demonstrated that it is not only the directors of big companies and banks who are awarding themselves a big salary. The case highlighted that shareholders in smaller companies need to be mindful of the duties of their directors particularly when there is only one. However the Court of Appeal held that there is no obligation for shareholders to take steps to investigate the activities of the company’s directors when considering whether they have been unfairly prejudicial to its shareholders. In this case the minority shareholder, Mr Maidment brought an action under s.994(1) of the Companies Act 2006 alleging that his interests had been prejudiced by the breaches of Mr Attwood’s duties as a director. The main breach being that Mr Attwood awarded himself approximately £780,000 in salary over 6 years when the company had made profit in only three of the six years. One year Mr Attwood awarded himself £145,000 salary when the companies had made a loss of approximately £170,000. At first instance the Court held that although Mr Attwood’s remuneration was excessive, it was not unfairly prejudicial to Mr Maidment as his salary was disclosed in the company’s annual accounts. Not surprisingly Mr

Maidment had not been sent the company’s full annual accounts as he should have been, however the Court held that these accounts were available on Companies House. The Court held that Mr Maidment could not complain that an act amounted to unfair prejudice where, if he had been diligent, he could have discovered Mr Attwood’s salary through Companies House. The Court of Appeal however overturned this decision as it meant that shareholders are at risk of losing their rights to claim for unfair prejudice under s.994(1) if they do not look at the filed accounts. It imposed an additional requirement under s.994(1) on the shareholders and this had no basis in statute or previous case law. The Court of Appeal held that Mr Attwood had in fact breached his duties as a director and in doing so his conduct was unfairly prejudicial under s.994(1) of the Companies Act 2006. The matter was complicated by the fact that the company was insolvent at the time of the petition and Mr Maidment’s shares were effectively worthless. However the Court is willing to take a wide view of the prejudice that may be suffered by a shareholder and they are flexible in their approach. Otherwise the ramifications of the decision at first instance would expose minority shareholders to the unfair consequences of dishonest directors without any proper recourse. Pensioner guilty of acid attack on 19-year-old ex-lover A Wolverhampton Crown Court has convicted an 80-yearold man guilty of masterminding an acid revenge attack on his teenage ex-lover. Mohammed Rafiq had denied inflicting grievous bodily harm on Vikki Horsman, 20, who was left scarred by the attack in April this year, when she was still aged 19. Rafiq had denied arranging the attack in retaliation for Ms Horsman ending the pair's relationship early this year. Rafiq, of Cheshire Road, Smethwick, will be sentenced on 19th December. Shannon Heaps, 23, and Steven Holmes, 25, were also found guilty of plotting to attack Ms Horsman at a house in Tividale, West Midlands. During the trial, the court heard Ms Horsman had entered into a relationship with "controlling" Rafiq when she was 18. He became angered when she broke up with him, and arranged for Heaps and Holmes to attack her with the corrosive liquid. On 15th April, she opened the door of the house in Tividale, West Midlands and was met by a hooded figure who threw acid in her face. Vikki Horsman told the court Rafiq had accused her of cheating on him while they were together. She suffered "horrific" burns as a result, requiring specialist surgery to her face, neck, shoulders, and upper leg, police said. They said Rafiq, who

suffered minor burns himself when he was splashed with liquid, was initially treated as a victim but later charged. He and Heaps, of Queens Avenue, and Holmes, of Allan Close, were found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Rafiq was convicted of a further charge of perverting the course of justice. Speaking after the trial, Ms Horsman told how she had been left with "life-changing" injuries. "I have had to undergo lots of treatment for the burns and the damage those people caused,"

she said. "The trauma and distress that Rafiq and his accomplices have put me under have left mental scars that I fear will never go away." Investigating officer Det Con Jason Moseley said the case had been "horrifying and complex" and "centred around a controlling relationship". "Rafiq's young ex-partner was seriously injured and left with devastating, lasting scars, which one can only presume was his intent given the nature of the planned attack," he said.

The regulations laid before Parliament propose a fine of £50 will be issued to people who smoke or who fail to prevent another person smoking in England. MPs are set to vote on the plans before the election - and if they are passed the change in law will come into force on 1st October next year. The move comes after a free vote in Parliament in February gave ministers the power to introduce the law, although it did not compel them too. Public health minister Jane Ellison said: "Second-hand smoke is a real threat to children's health and we want them to grow up free from the risks of smoking. "The only effective way to protect children is to prevent them breathing second-hand smoke and our plans to stop smoking in cars carrying children will help us to do this." "This, together with the protection of children from second-hand smoke in cars, will help de-normalise smoking and protect children from this deadly addiction." But Simon Clark, director of smokers' lobby group Forest, said: "The government is taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut. The overwhelming majority of smokers know smoking in a car with children is

inconsiderate and they don't do it. "The regulations are unnecessary and excessive. Do we really want to criminalise people for lighting a cigarette in a private vehicle?" A ban on smoking in cars has also been put forward in Scotland and Wales. Deborah Arnott, chief executive of Action on Smoking and Health, said: "We are delighted. We also urge the government to put the regulations on standardised packaging to Parliament before the general election.

Police ‘stop plane on runway’ to detain Syria-bound teenager British counter-terrorism officers stopped a plane as it taxied towards the runway at Heathrow to prevent a 15-year old girl from travelling to Syria to join Islamist fighters, according to reports. The girl, from east London, had saved up and bought a ticket to Istanbul without her parents' knowledge. She was removed from the flight and has since returned home but another girl, also aged 15, who was taken off the plane with her, managed to leave before police could intervene, it added. Asked about the report, police said they had received reports about a girl missing from Tower Hamlets. "Officers were able to locate her and she has since returned home safely," a

spokeswoman said, without elaborating. No further details were immediately available. A British Airways spokeswoman confirmed that one of its flights to Istanbul had had to turn back. "There was a flight that had to turn back because two passengers were removed from the plane," she said. Officials estimate that over 500 British citizens have travelled to Syria, where the Islamic State group has seized large swathes of territory, and London's police chief Bernard Hogan-Howe has said some 250 have since returned. Prime Minister David Cameron has warned that returning militants could launch attacks at home.

Britain has announced that an inquiry, into a technical failure at an air traffic control centre that caused widespread disruption to London flights last week, will be set up and completed by March 2015. Hundreds of flights to and from London were disrupted on Friday, causing knock-on effects to air travel across Europe, in an incident which

British Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin called ‘simply unacceptable’. The National Air Traffic Service (NATS) and the aviation regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), said on Monday that they would set up an independent inquiry. They said they would appoint a chairman and several experts to study the causes of and responses to the failure, in a

bid to try to avoid similar incidents in future. “I want it to be done as quickly as possible. I do want some speed in this,” McLoughlin told a committee of lawmakers as they grilled him over the incident. He said the inquiry should produce an interim report by the end of January and publish its final findings sometime in March.

A gunman, who burst into an Australian chocolate shop taking more than 15 customers hostage, was shot dead alongside two captives on Tuesday, after a tense standoff with heavily armed police. The Australian authorities charged the Lindt Cafe shop in Sydney at around 10am on 16th December, killing the suspect known as Man Haron Monis. The sound of gunfire was heard around the store, whilst explosions are believed to have been flash bang grenades, used by the police before they stormed the shop. Tori Johnson, a manager at the store, was tragically killed, according to Lindt Chocolate Cafe Australia, whilst the other hostage to lose their life in the standoff has been identified as 38year-old mother of three, Katrina Dawson. Six people at the scene were treated for injuries. Speaking at a news conference during the siege, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot said: “We don't yet know the motivation of the perpetrator. “We don't know that this is politically motivated although there are some indications that it could be. We have to appreciate that even in a society such as ours, there are people who would wish to do us harm.” He later added of the victims: “These were decent, good people who were going about their ordinary lives ... who got caught up in the sick fantasy of a deeply disturbed individual.”

Monis was an Iranian refugee and self-styled sheikh known by authorities for sending hate mail to the families of Australian troops who had lost their lives in Afghanistan. Born in Iran as Manteghi Bourjerdi, he migrated to Australia in 1996, and was involved once again with the law last year, charged with being an accessory to the murder of his exwife but had been freed on bail. During the siege, hostages were seen in the window holding a black flag with Arabic writing on, and despite initial beliefs it was related to the Islamic State, these links were soon removed. Meanwhile, residents in Australia rallied around the Muslim community during the hostage taking, with many

heading to the micro-blogging site, Twitter, using the hash-tag ‘#I’llridewithyou’. Garnering over 110,000 tweets in less than half a day, the message was offered to members of the Islamic faith, from individuals saying they would not be frightened, or hesitate sitting next to, people wearing religious clothing. In September, anti-terrorism police said they had thwarted an imminent threat to behead a random member of the public and, days later, a teenager in the city of Melbourne was shot dead after attacking two anti-terrorism officers with a knife. The Lindt cafe is in Martin Place, a pedestrian strip that was revealed as a potential location for the thwarted beheading.

“Hamas should be removed from terror list” The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas should be removed from the European Union's terrorist list, an EU court has ruled, saying the decision to include it was based on media reports, not considered analysis. In its ruling on Wednesday 17th December, the bloc's second highest tribunal, the General Court of the European Union, said EU member states could maintain their freeze on Hamas's assets for three months to give time for further review or to appeal the verdict. Israel, which has clashed repeatedly with Europe in recent years over Palestinian statehood ambitions, reacted with dismay. "We expect them to immediately put Hamas back on the list," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement, denouncing Hamas as "a murderous terrorist organisation". Hamas holds sway in the Gaza Strip and its founding charter calls for the destruction of Israel. It has regularly battled against Israel, most recently in a 50-day war this summer. Most Western countries, including the United States, agree with Israel that it is a terror organisation, pointing to indiscriminate rocket strikes out of Gaza and waves of suicide attacks, primarily between 1993 and 2005. Hamas says it is a legitimate

resistance movement and contested the European Union's decision in 2001 to include it on the EU terrorist list. It welcomed Wednesday's verdict. The EU court did not consider the merits of whether Hamas should be classified as a terror group, but reviewed the original decision-making process. This, it said, did not include the considered opinion of competent authorities, but rather relied on media and Internet reports. "The court stresses that those annulments, on fundamental procedural grounds, do not imply any substantive assessment of the question of the classification of Hamas as a terrorist group," the court said in a statement. It added that if an appeal was brought before the EU's top court, the European Court of Justice, the freeze of Hamas’s funds should continue until the legal process was complete. Appeals, which can only be based on points of law, typically last about a year and a half. The EU's ambassador to Israel Lars Faaborg-Andersen told Israel's Army Radio the body aimed to keep Hamas on the list. "Sometimes the courts come to decisions which surprise us. We need to assemble a stronger case for the listing and this is what we are going to do," FaaborgAndersen said.

India's troubled airline SpiceJet has grounded flights after oil companies refused to refuel any of its planes, reports say. The debt-ridden carrier owes money to creditors, including oil companies. SpiceJet is India's fourth-biggest airline by market share. Civil aviation authorities gave SpiceJet a reprieve when they said state-owned oil companies would be asked to give credit to the cash-strapped airline for up to 15 days. The civil aviation ministry also said that banks or other financial institutions would be asked to lend up to $94m (£60m), backed by a personal guarantee of SpiceJet chairman Kalanithi Maran, a well-known media businessman. The ministry said the measures were aimed at avoiding a collapse which it said would be a "major setback" for the airline industry. Correspondents say the government hopes to save jobs and prevent a repeat of the high-profile collapse of Kingfisher

Airlines which was grounded in 2012. It is not clear, however, why oil companies have refused to refuel SpiceJet planes after Tuesday's announcements. "Not even a single flight has taken off this morning due to fuel supply issue with the oil companies," sources in the SpiceJet told the BBC on Wednesday. SpiceJet has $314m (£200m) in debts and it is looking to raise funds. The company has been unable to pay its dues to staff, airports, tax authorities and its lenders. The airline, which has been making losses since last year, is also battling refunds for customers and forced flight cancellations. It has already cut the size of its fleet by a third since September and cancelled dozens of flights a day for the rest of the year. Many analysts think SpiceJet's collapse is inevitable - that the problems are too fundamental to turn around without massive investment.

Islamic State insurgents forced Iraqi forces to retreat on Wednesday after fierce fighting in the city of Baiji, close to the country's biggest oil refinery. Local police and anti-Islamic State fighters tried to repel insurgents for five days, but a lack of support and ammunition had forced them to leave their positions in central Baiji, said Saad Thahir, a Baiji council member. Before the latest clashes erupted last week, security forces and allied militias had stationed themselves inside the vital refinery facilities and left the defence of the city itself to under-equipped local police and Sunni tribal fighters. “Top army commanders ordered troops to leave the city and take positions inside the refinery, which was given priority. They knew staying inside Baiji would help Islamic State to drag the army into a war of attrition,” said an army major, on condition of anonymity.

His election raised hopes that the right-wing leader would build on the economic transformation that began in the 1990s. Radicalisation of Muslims in the world's top oil exporter has led to domestic attacks and the involvement of Saudi citizens in jihadist movements in Iraq and Syria, while extreme religious practices have damaged efforts to boost employment. Over the past decade the House of Saud has not only put in place measures to control clerics and their sermons, but has started to favour more modern clergy for top state positions. Saudi rulers are also starting to reform areas once the exclusive domain of the clergy, such as education and law, and have promoted elements of national identity that have no religious component. Saudi Arabia remains one of the most religiously conservative countries on earth, and the royal family are not cutting off the clergy or ditching Wahhabism's basic precepts, analysts and diplomats say. They are instead attempting to foster a reading of its teachings that distances it from Islamist militants such as Islamic State, and which better meets the demands of a modern economy. Imran Khan: A changed man

On his first visit to India, Imran Khan, who took the UK by storm in 2009 with his ‘Unforgettable’ album which was undeniably packed with hugely acclaimed songs, was questioned about what took him so long to work with the Indian film industry. The 30-year-old from the Netherlands has just released his song, titled ‘Let's Celebrate’ from Sanjay Kapoor’s film ‘Tevar’, which is most definitely set to be the next big dance floor track. Talking about his rebellious teenage years and his humble upbringing from a Pakistani household, Imran is not shy to admit to his faults from the past. “My parents are originally from Pakistan. My dad was in a government job, where, when people without a family died at home, my dad and his colleagues were sent to pick up all their stuff and auction it. “For him, it was a big thing, having come from Pakistan and just established himself there. “My mum is a housewife. Initially, I was only interested in sports. Music was a side thing. I was always outside the house playing football and basketball and was very naughty. “At the time, even though I had no money, I was always chilling. I could just not sit at home, not even for ten minutes. “My parents had no hope for me and did not know what to do with me. My other two siblings, both went to school and were into education. “My parents could not control me, so they sent me to a special school, but that too did not help. They would hit me and I would sometimes even hit my mum back.” But in 2011, Imran overcame a drunken life-threatening fall in Dubai, and it was then that he decided it was time he turned his life around. “I would drink ten bottles at a time. “I had a bad accident in Dubai a few years back and now, I don't drink at all. “I was so busy doing shows,

drinking and chasing money that I fell down the stairs and had a blackout. I broke my head, my ribs, everything. I was almost dead and had blood on my brain. “I was out of action for a month, but it was God's warning to me, and I started looking after myself. Now I pray as much as I can too.” Imran also talked about his missed opportunity of being a sportsman. “Can you imagine, I was supposed to be a part of NBA Juniors for Holland? “When I was 15, I was the best player in the team. “One day, my coach called me and said that the NBA Junior's selection team had come to look for talent. “I was underage, but was preselected by them to go to the US and train. “All they wanted was €300, but for us that was a lot of money. I went home and asked, but of course - the answer was a flat ‘No’. “I was heart-broken at the time. But when I was 18, I moved away from sports and became interested in music. “I hate being used. I do a lot for people and then expect too much from them. I must change that. I want to put my stamp on the world and explode like a bomb with happiness and positivity.” When asked who his emotional anchor was, he replied: “The Prophet. “Religion is so beautiful. There’s no mistaking the sense of purpose in the styling of the new Lexus RC F coupe, a car that projects its high performance qualities in every carefully crafted curve and plane. Looking good is one thing, but Lexus’s focus was to produce a design that also fully supports the car’s dynamic potential. Right from the prototype stage, the Lexus RC F was evaluated on race tracks around the world, including Fuji Speedway (true to the car’s sporting Lexus “F” designation) and the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Every aspect of the RC F, from its footprint on the road and its body rigidity, to its suspension, brakes, steering and chassis electronics, was designed to achieve the best grip and agile handling. Although the RC F has relatively compact overall dimensions – 4,705mm long, 1,845mm wide and 1,390mm high – its 2,730mm wheelbase, 1,555mm front track and 1,560mm rear track give it a surprisingly large road footprint, helping maximise the car’s dynamic potential. The bodyshell follows the example set by the Lexus GS in being particularly strong and rigid, tuned for stability at high speed

and promoting ultra-precise handling and steering in all driving conditions. To increase cabin strength and handling stability, key structural elements have been made more robust and additional reinforcements have been added in key areas. The way in which the body shell is assembled, also plays an important part in overall strength of the coupe, and the reduction of vibration and cabin deformation too, for example the use of body adhesive in panel joints, additional spot welding points and laser screw welding. The RC F is equipped with

double wishbone front and multilink rear suspension, honed during extensive track testing. The front suspension features forged aluminium upper and lower arms, and the rear suspension geometry has been defined exclusively for the RC F with a revised geometry and strategic use of aluminium to reduce unsprung weight. Together these measures ensure outstanding responsiveness, with crisp turn-in and well controlled, progressive body roll, while maintaining the smooth, pliant ride that’s to be expected from even a high-performance Lexus. The RC F’s electronic power

steering is designed to achieve excellent dynamic performance and steering feel. A damper-less intermediate shaft has been added to the steering column to increase system rigidity and secure a high degree of responsiveness to steering input. The new shaft features an expandable/contractible stroke mechanism to absorb shaft length changes when driving. This gives a smoother steering feel and a reduction in response lag. The RC F has an all-new Brembo brake package, with improved cooling and a vertical Gsensor integrated in the ABS. At the front there are 380 x

34mm discs with opposed sixpiston aluminium callipers; at the rear the discs measure 345 x 28mm, with opposed four-piston aluminium callipers. Using integrated aluminium monobloc callipers provides high rigidity while also reducing weight. The ventilated front discs are slotted rather than drilled, helping to keep the brake pads clean and their effectiveness consistent under all driving conditions. The front discs are equipped with spiral fins which, in conjunction with improved cooling duct efficiency, ensure excellent cooling performance. The adoption of a G-sensor is a direct result of testing at the Nürburgring. It means the system can allow for changes in vertical loads, and hence optimise braking force control the instant load returns to the tyres after jumping a crest. The RC F runs on 19-inch forged aluminium wheels. Two designs are offered to UK customers: the RC F uses rims with five pairs of double thin spokes, each with a machined finish; the RC F Carbon has wheels with twin sets of 10 spokes, the inner series set 30 degrees ahead of the outer. The RC F is available to order now, priced from £59,995. UK customer deliveries will begin in February.

"What with all the safety and legal issues it was pretty much impossible but the team at MotoFest have done something amazing to pull this off. When we heard about it we just had to be part of it!" With no chance to practice beforehand the team will have to draw on all of its years of experience to get to grips with the much tighter confines of the slippery ring road, hemmed in by concrete walls and barriers. "We usually perform drifting at racetracks," adds team member Paul Cheshire. "The bumps, grids and throw in a greasy layer of diesel, not to mention the unforgiving nature of the concrete and it will add to a challenging drift arena.” Tyre-maker Falken was keen to get more involved in an event it has supported from its initial year. "Taking the action to the fans is what Motofest is all about," says Falken's Matt Smith. "This is the only place to see a safe and spectacular drift on a UK road, it will look incredible." The technology and development of Falken High Performance Tyres and their driving characteristics have for many years been derived from motorsport, most recently its participation in the American Le Mans Series and Nürburgring 24 Hours.

The world’s first Ferrari Sergio was delivered to its new owner, the SBH Royal Auto Gallery in the UAE, at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, where the Finali Mondiali Ferrari are being staged and which is home to the Ferrari World theme park. Designed by Pininfarina, just six of this incredibly limited edition roadster are being built. The car was created to celebrate the spirit and core values of the historic Cambiano company in the 60th anniversary year of its collaboration with the Prancing Horse. Needless to say, Sergio was the only possible choice of name for the model, in homage to great Sergio Pininfarina, who sealed the unique, longstanding partnership with Ferrari. The Ferrari Sergio is a genuinely radical car. It is both exclusive and spare in the sense that every single element aboard is focused entirely on performance. An authentic opentop, it explicitly references the track, underscoring and intensifying its

sense of sportiness, fun behind the wheel and the pleasure of design at its purest. The Ferrari Sergio’s performance and dynamics are excellent in the extreme too. It is based on the 458 Spider and retains the latter’s technological content as well as all of the functional aspects of its cockpit. Each one of the six Ferrari Sergios was configured by its owner in dedicated sessions at the Tailor Made atelier in Maranello where clients are invited to personalise their cars to their own individual tastes. The atelier offers enormous freedom of choice in terms of colours, materials and finishes. As a result, every detail is extremely exclusive, thereby continuing the Prancing Horse tradition begun in the 1950s and 60s of creating bespoke cars minutely tailored to each client’s wishes.

The win moves the victors clear of relegation and confirms their league status for another season with an Aminul Hoque double leading the way. Samba have dropped into the relegation zone after being held to a goalless draw against bottom side, Half a Dozen. In what was a crucial game for the league strugglers, the side never really got going and were forced to play out a bore draw, with chances coming few and far between throughout. With Super Six winning their game, next week’s clash between the two sides could well turn out to be the decider as to who is relegated into Division Two. MOTM: Talib Hussain worked tirelessly throughout the game to earn his side a rare point.

Hyde Park 0-0 Jubodhol

Hyde Park were left left frustrated as they were unable to break Jubodhol down in a one sided affair. The table-toppers were the dominant side in terms of possession but were unable create any clear cut chances, as their opponents seemed to settle for a point, failing to get one effort on target all game. Hyde Park's Tyler Bussue was unable to convert the few half-chances that came his way as he attempted to find his 14th goal of the season, coming closest with a shot hitting the post but bouncing clear. Next week’s clash between NFA and Hyde Park could well be the title decider with three points for either team likely to make them favourites to life the SLUK Championship. MOTM: Despite being unable to find the back of the net, Tyler Bussue provided a masterclass performance.

Old Bacca Boys 2-3 Super Six

A double from Raza Rafique sent Super Six to another impressive victory last week as they overcame Old Bacca Boys by three goals to two. In what was a well deserved win for the resurgent Super Six, the side were forced to battle back from behind twice with Wasim Rashid also finding his name on the scoresheet. Sultan Khan opened the scoring for OBB after some good play by Gulfraz Satti, before Rafique bagged the equaliser moments later, turning on the ball and firing in an unstoppable effort. Despite being on top, Super Six once again fell behind when Khan’s tame effort somehow found a way in at the near post – a moment no goalkeeper would want to see again. Up stepped Rafique once more to level the game with another well taken goal, before the goalscorer turned provider, with a great through ball to Wasim Rashid for the winner. MOTM: Raza Rafique’s picked up two goals and an assist in a fine display.
