Bradford’s night sky was lit up earlier this week as a touching candlelight vigil was held in the city centre in memory of the Pakistani children and teachers, killed in a terrorist attack. Hundreds of residents turned out on Thursday 18th December, to remember the victims of the Peshawar school which was attacked by Taliban insurgents two days prior. 132 children and nine members of staff were killed in the attack with images of mass funerals broadcast around the world in the days that followed. Amongst those in attendance in Bradford were young and old representatives, including members of the Muslim, Christian, Hindu and Sikh faith. Mohammed Rafiq Sehgal, President of Bradford’s Council for Mosques, lit his candle and stood alongside several faith leaders. He spoke of how important it now was to ensure communities stand together at these times. “An event like this can only make us stronger as one community,” he said. “We stand together in the fight against terrorism and condemn the actions in Peshawar. “What happened at the school was not a crime against one religion or a community; it was a crime against humanity. “We were showing our

solidarity with the families of those affected by the attacks and we pray for them together.” On Tuesday 16th December, it is reported that seven members of the Tehrik-sTaliban, dressed in full army uniforms stormed the Army Public School mid-morning firing their weapons at helpless pupils. It took Pakistan commandos around eight hours to clear the school of the threat with all attackers killed either by officers or suicide vests. As well as the moving vigil, a Pakistan flag was also flown at half-mast outside Bradford’s City Hall following the tragedy. Meanwhile, in Leeds, a smaller gathering was seen at 11am on the same day, as a minute of silence was held outside the city’s art gallery. Led by the Lord Mayor, Cllr David Congreve, councillors and members of the public shared in a moment of remembrance for those involved in the massacre. Cllr Congreve said: “People in Leeds and across the world have been deeply moved by the reports and images we have seen following these appalling events. “It is fitting that as a city that promotes diversity, tolerance and peace, we gather to pay our respects to those who have had their lives cut so tragically short.”

Festive safe fun
Health and care workers in Leeds are urging festive fun seekers to think before they ask for emergency help. With ambulance services and accident and emergency services all seeing an increase in use, they want to remind people to use the most appropriate route to sort out their problems. Dr Ian Cameron, Director of Public Health for Leeds City Council, said: “Our message is quite simple really. Don’t just dial for an ambulance or go to your nearest A&E department unless you really have to. “Local pharmacies and GPs, as well as the NHS 111 advice line and NHS website all offer alternatives, and we also are sharing advice about watching out for the impact of drinking too much on the LikeMyLimit website.” NHS 111 is an easier way to access local NHS healthcare services in England for when you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency.

Museum exhibition closing
Time is running out to see a fantastic exhibition at a popular city museum celebrating the lives and times of the Romans. Closing on 4th January 2015, the remarkable ‘Roman Empire: Power & People’ touring exhibition at Leeds City Museum offers some of the greatest treasures from the British Museum’s vast collections. On offer include Roman, RomanoBritish and Romano-Egyptian artefacts, along with items from Yorkshire’s own prized collections which give the exhibition a unique local context. A popular lecture programme and a range of family events have accompanied the exhibition, which since opening at the museum in September 2014 has captured the imagination of both young and old.
Pool closure
The swimming pool at Scott Hall leisure centre will be closed until further notice following damage to the roof caused by high winds. The gym and dry side areas at the centre will remain open subject to normal Christmas opening hours which can be found on the Leeds City Council website. A council spokesman said: “Following damage to the roof above the swimming pool which occurred over the weekend, it has been necessary to close the pool until further notice. “Because of the current weather conditions and the festive period, it may be some time before work can be carried out to repair the roof. “However, we can assure the public that the pool will reopen as soon as possible.”

A pair of undercover Santas brought a sweet surprise to young people at two Bradford hospitals last week as they delivered more than two-hundred selection boxes to some of the city’s patients. Sarah Royal and Qais Ahfaq had been collecting the chocolate treats for more than a month and finally got to distribute their early Christmas presents on Friday at the Bradford Royal Infirmary and Airedale General Hospital. In total, 264 selection boxes were donated to the appeal, with
a further £320 in cash handed over to charities - Martin House Children’s Hospice and the Association of Young People with ME (AYME). Sarah, from Idle, Bradford, took part in a similar project last year alongside colleagues from work and decided to repeat the initiative this year with the help of her friend, Qais. “After the success of last year’s collection, I wanted to do something similar and this time we received even more boxes than we could have hoped for,” she explained. “When we got to hand over the chocolates, we needed a trolley to
carry them all up to the ward there was that many. It was fantastic. “By doing an appeal like this it is very rewarding and we hope that we have been able to help people who are spending their Christmas day in hospital.” A huge haul of selection boxes were dropped off at Ward 17 at the BRI where children are cared for. Alison Kay, one of the hospital’s play specialists, spoke of how important a project like this can prove to be for patients. “For patients who are spending time here over Christmas, to receive a gift from somebody
outside of hospital means a great deal to them,” she said. “When they see these selection boxes it will help spread the joy of Christmas through the whole ward and bring a smile to so many faces.” Sarah and Qais also added their thanks to all the people who had donated to the appeal over the past month. “We just want to say a massive than you to everyone who donated a selection box or cash during the appeal,” Sarah added. “Every penny counts and we could not have done it without your help.”

Twelve months of Leeds in Bloom
The 12 pictures which will adorn a special 2015 calendar celebrating the city’s fantastic parks, gardens and green spaces have been revealed. This follows a competition by the council’s parks and countryside team which sponsored by delivery service Hermes UK, offered budding photographers of all ages the opportunity to not only see their images feature in next year’s Leeds in Bloom calendar, but also win a £100 cash prize. For snappers in the four-to-16 age range there was also the added incentive of winning £300 of horticultural gift vouchers for their school. Once again the quality of snaps submitted were of the highest quality, and after much deliberation by the judges, the winning photographers were invited to meet Cllr Jack Dunn at Hermes UK in Morley and see their pictures feature in the 2015 calendar for the first time. Leeds has a thriving In-Bloom network and this year claimed a prestigious gold award in the ‘Large City’ group category.
FAMILY: The siblings have been offered free food, travel and even an employment opportunity as well as monetary donations
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Three teenagers, who were left to care for themselves in Bradford after their mother was seriously injured in a car accident in Bangladesh, say they have been ‘overwhelmed’ by the public’s support. 18-year-old Yeasin Mohammed, younger brother Ismail Mohammed, 15, and sister Jasmin Akter, 13, had an appeal sent out on their behalf from Carlton Bolling College after the situation was brought to the school’s attention by a support worker. The three young people were left to live off only £57 a week in benefits at the time as they were unable to access their mother’s benefits whilst she was in hospital. Since the initial ‘call for help’ more than £5,000 has now been donated to the three siblings which will help cover the costs of living and soaring medical bills. However, it isn’t only monetary donations which have been made. The offer of food, furniture and even employment opportunities have been offered by businesses in and around the city. Eldest brother, Yeasin, said the support had been ‘unbelievable’ and thanked the public for their response. “People we don’t know are helping us in amazing ways and giving us money which they don’t even have to give away in many cases,” he said. “One lady donated £600 and she was crying when I spoke to her on the phone. “I want to say thank you to everyone who has been helping us and would ask for the support to continue to help my brother and
‘Overwhelmed’ by public generosity Teenagers in difficult family situation, with just £57 a week to live on, receive immense kindness from society sister.” After the car accident in Bangladesh, the family were left with huge hospital bills as the children’s mother, Mahfuza Khatun, did not have travel insurance. To fly Ms Khatun home, it cost the family £7,000 whilst a further £2,500 was lost when a travel agency allegedly booked the wrong flight and refused to refund the payment. Now back in the UK, the children’s mother is recovering in Pinderfields Intensive Care Unit, in Wakefield, with the siblings visiting every day. Sayyeda Khan, vice-chair at the Hamara Centre, has been working closely with the family since hearing of their plight. Acting as the single point of contact for the teenagers and establishing the needs of the family, Ms Khan has also helped develop a long term action plan which will enable Yeasin to support himself and his siblings in the future.
“It is amazing to see how the city, and even wider public, have come together to help the family but they do continue to need support and help,” she said.

Held at the Willowfield Centre on Legrams Lane, Bradford, the evening starts at 5pm until 9pm and will include talks about poverty and a meal.

Record Breakers By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Whilst many people have been out buying gifts over the festive season, a team of nine fundraisers from a Bradford college have been at the other side of the counter, selling gifts in an attempt to raise money for charity. The students, from Grange Technology College, have raised £1,000 throughout the past month, as they brought Free the Children’s ‘Rafiki Chain Campaign’, to the youth of the city. Under the guidance of passionate fundraiser, Mohammed Usman – who was recently awarded a Diana Award for his work on the campaign – the group sold hundreds of wristbands and surpassed their own targets. Mohammed spoke of the incredible year he has had helping the campaign and praised all the team’s efforts in their latest Rafiki initiative. “Once again we have been able to raise over £1,000 within a short period,” he said. “We have managed to break the school fundraising record for the year and have brought in more than £2,000 by supporting Free the Children's ‘Rafiki Chain Campaign’. “It has been an incredible year for me personally but I would like to say a huge thank you to

Fahim Zaman, who was a team member in the project, said he was delighted to have helped raise so much money and had also learned a number of life skills. He said his desire to get involved with the project began after seeing Mohammed speak at ‘We Day’ at Wembley Stadium in front of more than 12,000 people and he has never looked back since. “Seeing a fellow Grange student stand up and speak on

Rhyme time in 2015
Young children in the Bradford district can start 2015 with a rhyme. Bradford Council's Libraries is challenging under fives to take up the Rhyme Challenge once again after its popularity throughout the past year. The challenge runs from January to March and is held in libraries throughout the district where children will be asked to learn five rhymes. Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Employment, Skills and Culture, said: “This is a really fun activity for children and their families, but it is also laying important foundation stones for these children and their future. “We are encouraging thousands of children to take part and have ambitions to exceed last year's success.”
Plant a tree this winter
Anyone who is looking for something to do in early January that won’t cost a penny – especially after the expense of Christmas – is in for a rare treat. Residents of Kirklees are encouraged to attend a creative, educational family tree planting event a Dewsbury Country Park, on Sunday 11th January between 10am and 12.30pm. An ‘exceptional carer’ Leeds graduate commended at annual awards night
Receiving a degree from your university is one of the biggest personal accomplishments many people may achieve. And now, despite graduating more than two years ago, one former Leeds student has had to practice her stage walk once more as she was awarded a prestigious NHS Trust accolade earlier this month. Radhika Surelia, who graduated from Leeds Beckett University in 2012 with a BSc (Hons) in Dietetics, received the ‘Exceptional Care Award’ at an annual awards ceremony for her work as a clinical dietician. by the Leicestershire Hosted Partnership NHS Trust, the Celebrating Excellence Awards are staged to honour those members of staff who go above and beyond what is expected of them during work. This year’s event, at Devonshire Place, was attended by more than one hundred members of staff, carers, service users and volunteers as 13 winners were announced. Radhika was just one of the winners on the night, and she said the fact a patient’s daughter was the one who nominated her, made the award ‘extra special’. She said: “It wasn’t until the ceremony and the moment I was announced as the
winner for the award that I had any idea I was going to win. I am still in shock by this. “I have a lovely engraved award and a framed photograph which I had taken with the Chief Executive and Chair of the Trust; both of whom presented me with the award.”

Rates cut for outdoor traders Outside traders at one of Leeds’ most historic city markets are to receive a 20 per cent rent cut in 2015 as the council aim to please some of its frustrated tenants. As part of proposals given the go-ahead this month, all traders with a regular licence to trade at Leeds Kirkgate Open Market will be granted the significant reduction in their base rent by Leeds City Council from 1st January 2015 until 31st December 2015. This follows a move by the council to approve in September 2014, a 20 per cent decrease in rent to indoor tenants in order to compensate for trading conditions during a substantial £12.3m refurbishment programme at the market which is set to begin early next year. This assistance will mean that all outdoor traders with a regular licence, and all indoor tenants, are now being given extra support with their rents by the council and help ensure that Kirkgate Market continues to be the home for a wide range of independent businesses and services.
CUT: Leeds City Council cut the rates for indoor traders in Kirkgate Market earlier this year and now outdoor traders will receive an identical offer
Council looks to please tenants after drop in footfall
Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive board member with responsibility for transport and the economy said: “We realise that during our substantial £12.3m refurbishment programme of Leeds Kirkgate Market there may be some disruption to both businesses and customers. “This is why we have now taken the decision to offer outside traders a 20 per cent reduction in their base rents. “This will mean that regular traders at Kirkgate indoor and outdoor markets can now benefit from a cut in their rent from the council, which is a signal of our continued commitment to support businesses at Kirkgate Market during this exciting time of change.” The development of the Victorian
Quarter in Leeds has hampered the productivity of Kirkgate Market in recent months with some trader claiming to have lost up to 70 per cent of their custom. Speaking previously to the Asian Express newspaper, indoor tenant, Mr Bhardwaj, said the rent cuts are ‘ridiculous’. “What they (Leeds City Council) have done to the market and what they are offering in this rent reduction is ridiculous,” he said. “They were warned well in advance that this would happen but they didn’t listen and now they are just trying to whitewash it all by giving us 20 per cent off. “We’ve lost so much business because people just don’t come in here anymore.”

B-ROAD-ening knowledge School awarded for dedication to road safety Two young pupils from Leeds accepted a national award on behalf of the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) last week as the educational establishment was commended for its safe transport schemes. Year 1 pupil, Seja Sood, and reception’s Oli Yates, received the Modeshift STARS bronze award which demonstrates the school’s commitment to promoting sustainable travel. To achieve the accreditation, a school must complete the Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition for Schools programme (STARS) run by Leeds City Council. Amongst the work undertaken by GSAL is an annual travel survey, taking the issues identified in them and delivering transport initiatives that benefit pupils’ safety and wellbeing. Mark Sadler, road safety officer from Leeds City Council’s Influencing Travel Behaviour team, said: “Modeshift STARS will have a major impact on travel choices for children and on their health. “The aim is to reduce car use around schools, which will
improve safety and congestion and help children to develop important personal skills and independence by walking or cycling to school.” Paul Womersley, director of estates at GSAL, said: “We’re proud to receive this award in acknowledgement of the measures we have introduced under our travel plan. “The next challenge is to aim for silver and we are committed to working towards this goal.” Central to GSAL’s travel plan is the safe transfer of its youngest pupils using a shuttle bus between the main site at Alwoodley Gates and the Nursery and Pre-prep at Rose Court in Headingley, so Rose Court was chosen as the venue for the presentation of the award. During a special road safety assembly for pupils in reception and years 1 and 2, members of the Influencing Travel Behaviour team presented the certificate and plaque to the two five-year-old pupils, before performing a special pantomime ‘The Gift of Life’, which delivered important road safety messages in a fun, interactive and seasonal way.

Learning is child’s play at museum
The Crow Nest Park museum in Dewsbury has developed its already popular educational school visit about toys to include puppet making and performance. While the children have lots of fun playing with puppets, they are being taught the national curriculum core subjects of design and technology, science and literacy. The day-long visit is aimed at Key Stage 1 pupils who still get the opportunity to see and handle a range of historic toys from the collection as well as play with traditional toys from the past, such as cup and ball, hoops and stilts - but the puppets now take centre stage. During the visit, pupils make cardboard concertina crocodile puppets; learn about different types of puppets and do a picture quiz on some of the more famous puppets they might know.

Give the ‘gift of life’ this Christmas Lifesavers campaign launched to get more people on the organ donor register
A new appeal by the NHS Blood and Transplant team is calling for Asian people across the UK to become ‘Christmas List Lifesavers’ this winter by registering as organ donors. Whilst many people are looking forward to unwrapping presents and spending time with their families this festive season, regardless of their religious heritage, 6,891 people on the transplant list are hoping for the gift of an organ. Amongst those, 1,077 are from Asian backgrounds, and with a low number of BME donors currently registered, it is hoped the festive season may allow people to contemplate giving something extra special. Locally, there are people looking for a donor, including Choudry Mohammed Ikram, from Wakefield. The civil engineer has been on the kidney transplant list for the past three years at Leeds’ St James’s Hospital and needs evening dialysis treatment three times a week. Mr Ikram said there are many different Islamic scholars who
have given differing views on organ donation yet hoped others would listen to his message. He said: “My own view is that the Prophet, Peace Be Upon Him, said to save a life is one the highest duties you can carry out.” year’s ‘Lifesavers This Christmas List’ campaign has been launched after it was once again highlighted that Asian people are more likely to need an organ transplant than the rest of the population. New figures show that 326 Asian people have died on the waiting list in the last five years because of the lack of suitable organs. Sally Johnson, NHS Blood and Transplant’s Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation, said it was a sad statistic but one which could be amended if people signed up to the register. “Sadly, fewer people from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups agree to organ donation which means that people from these communities often wait longer for a transplant and are more likely to die before a suitable organ can be found,” she
said. “We urge Asian people to find out more about organ donation, to sign the Organ Donation Register, and to tell their families about their decision to donate.” Last year, only 36 per cent of black, Asian and minority families agreed to allow their relative’s organs to be used, compared to an average of 59 per cent for the overall population. 449 Asian patients across the UK have received a transplant from a deceased donor already this year thanks to families agreeing to donate a loved one’s organs. APPEAL: Choudry Mohammed Ikram, from Wakefield, is just one of thousands of people from the Asian demographic who is currently in need of an organ donor

Christmas for all religions
Dispelling the myth of an ‘offensive’ holiday season Almost six-hundred people gathered at Sheffield’s Pakistan Muslim Centre (PMC) last weekend as faith groups came together for a unique, and very tuneful, Christmas Carols Party. Organised by the centre’s operation manager, Mukhtar Tufail, and chairman, Muhammed Ali, the event was staged as part of an ongoing commitment by the group to help empower the local Roma Slovakian communities whilst bolstering relations between different religions. Amongst the diverse range of guests was the Lord Lieutenant David Moody, Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire, Dr Alan Billings; as well as representatives from the Sikh, Hindu, Bangladeshi and Christian communities. Mr Moody commented: “The Atmosphere here is remarkable, it’s interesting to what extent PMC are taking the Slovak Roma community under their wing, recognising their problems on arrival and doing so much to help them. “It’s then intriguing to see these cultural cross currents, we have just heard the Roma community sing Silent Night in their language but in the tune we use all across Europe. It’s quite wonderful.”
PARTY: A celebration event was held in Sheffield to unite members of different religions at Christmas time
Over the past six months the centre has played a pivotal role in creating role models from within that community and during the historical Christmas Carols Party, the Pakistan Muslim Centre launched The European Roma Community Forum. The forum is made up of individuals from the Roma Slovakian community who take their civic responsibilities very seriously and want to bandage the badly bruised community cohesion concept. Commenting on the success Chairman Muhammed Ali said “This has not been done before, we needed to dispel the myths
people hold about migrants, but also about Muslims. “I was very keen to lead on this and also promote the cardinal principle of life, namely that everybody has a right to practice their religious beliefs.” The performance on the day saw a group of extremely passionate Slovakian children performing Away in a Manger, Silent Night, and Jingle Bells. There was also live dancing, local singers, and presentations on how Christmas is celebrated in the Eastern Europe. Organiser of the day, Mukhtar Tufail, said it was a ‘proud day’ for Sheffield as a city which
celebrates ‘multi-faith community cohesion’ “When you see people, for whom English is not their first language, come on the stage and sing Away in a Manger in English with such passion and devotion, then there really isn’t much left to say. “This event has taught us that the Christmas festivities can truly bind us all together. “The myths that Christmas offends some communities have certainly been dispelled here today. This is a proud day for Sheffield, a memorable day in the history of multi-faith community cohesion.”

Seven year sentence for child sex offender Paedophile brought to justice, four years after offence
GUILTY: Jamal Mohammed Raheem-ul-Naseer was handed his prison sentence after being found guilty of two offences against children aged nine and 14
A Kirklees man was jailed for a total of seven years earlier this week after he was found guilty of historical sexual offences against children. Jamal Mohammed Raheem-ulNasir, of Firthcliffe Grove, Liversedge, was sentenced to terms of four years and three years at Leeds Crown Court respectively for offences carried out when his victims were aged nine and 14. The court heard that the 31year-old had committed the offences in 2010 and 2011, when the girls came to his house in Willow Street, in the Girlington area of Bradford. He was found guilty of four counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of sexual assault of a child. He was also made the subject of a Sexual Offenders Prevention Order, to remain in place until further notice. Detective Constable Helen Riley, of the Bradford District Safeguarding Unit, said: “Raheem-Ul-Nasir took advantage of his victims' young ages and vulnerability to carry out these attacks over a period of time. “I would like to thank them for
coming forward and reporting his crimes to the police, and hope that the sentence passed down today will give them some comfort. “I also hope it will encourage other victims of sexual offences to engage with our specially trained officers, who will sensitively and thoroughly investigate all reports with the aim of securing convictions against offenders.” Mark Burns-Williamson, West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, said it was imperative to ensure the victims and witnesses, ‘in particular those who are most vulnerable’, always come first. “Any young person who has been a victim or a witness of this sexual exploitation should have the confidence to come forward, trust that their voice will be heard and be justified in believing that the responsible authorities will make sure they and others are supported and kept safe,” he said. “This case demonstrates that they will be heard and supported by specially trained officers throughout the whole process and have access to other victim’s support organisations including the Help for Victims website at www.helpforvictims.co.uk.”

An ultimatum was issued to the people running the Toller Lane mosque and madrassa, which has been set up in the former Emerald building, previously used as a publishing house. Current car park spaces are available for visitors to the mosque at the house adjoining the site, as well as a nearby wedding venue. Cllr Imran Hussain, of the local Toller Ward, said he was in favour of the site’s use during a plans panel meeting earlier this week. He added that the reason no legal agreement had been drawn up for the parking, was due to the agreements being ‘very expensive’. Ward colleague, Cllr Arshad Hussain, also backed the building’s
use as a mosque and said no concerns had been raised regarding traffic in the 18 months of operation so far. In an unusual turn of events, the applicants then did not return to the discussion at City Hall after a small break was allocated for the panel to go see the site. In their absence it was decided that a legal agreement for parking must be submitted to the panel by the end of January, or the plans would be refused.

Shock for Bradford student as he discovers he’s won a Mercedes-Benz AMG
SURPRISE: 19-year-old Saif Ali Aurangzeb was left speechless after he discovered he’d won his dream car and £10,000 cash prize
Teenager wins car! A Bradford teenager got the surprise of his life when he discovered he had won a car competition, which he’d entered into online. 19-year-old Saif Ali Aurangzeb was left speechless as he received the news that he’d won a brand new £40,000 MercedesBenz A45 AMG, thanks to super car competition company Best of the Best. Saif was already stunned when the gaming company’s boss Will Hindmarch turned up at his grandmother’s house to surprise him with the new Mercedes-Benz. But he was left in a daze of amazement as he discovered that there was an additional £10,000 cash prize hidden in the boot. The 19-year-old could barely speak, uttering "you're having a laugh". Saif, who studies at the University of Bradford and also helps out in the family food store, was entered into the competition to win the car after playing online
at www.botb.com. He said he had played the competition for about a year and always opted for the A45 AMG. "I am over the moon," said Saif. "I just loved the car from day one and I forgot about the cash. I cannot believe it - I am buzzing." Saif, who now gets to spec up his own choice of car, says he will be opting for a red model. He will also get a year’s insurance and servicing for free as part of the prize. BOTB founder and Managing Director Will, who tries to personally surprise all the BOTB winners with their cars, said: “It is always lovely to give someone a car that they really want. “Saif obviously loved this
model so it is great that he wasn’t tempted to go with another car and won the one he really wanted. “It’s such a great moment when they realise they have won. We are making people's dreams come true. It is quite life-changing for some people." Best of the Best was founded by William Hindmarch in 1999. Since then the keys to more than £15m-worth of supercars have been handed over. Half of all customers now play online at www.botb.com while others play at stands in Britain’s major airports and shopping centres. Manningham’s Boogie Woogie A new piece of exciting artwork is now on display in Bradford after a team of youngsters from the city came together to spread a message of ‘peace’ through art. Young residents from Manningham Housing Association were joined by local artist, Razwan ul-Haq, in the Bradford Boogie Woogie project, mixing traditional Arabic calligraphy with contemporary art. After months of planning, and weeks of workshops, a final piece of art was produced, constructed out of tiles and reading ‘salaam’, translated to ‘peace’ in English. Last weekend, a ribbon cutting ceremony took place at Clarendon Court, on Lumb Lane, Manningham, to officially open the ‘two-metre by two-metre’ design. On hand at the event were the budding artists, parents, residents and staff from Manningham Housing Association as well as Razwan. The passionate artist said he has worked previously with the group yet this year’s initiative, funded by the Arts Council, was much bigger than anything anything he had undertaken with the group before. He explained: “I have been involved with Manningham Housing Association previously through doing drop-in sessions as well as entertaining at the annual mela. “This time, we decided to do something a little different and attempt to fuse my passion of traditional calligraphy with a more

A Sweet Success Story
CONGRATULATIONS: Dr Zulficar Ali, owner of the Sweet Centre Restaurant, is greeted by Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Mike Gibbons, during the celebration event
For the past five decades, Manningham’s Sweet Centre restaurant has been providing sweet treats and Asian dishes to the residents of Bradford and beyond. Last week, on Friday 12th December, a special plaque unveiling ceremony took place at the renowned site with special guest, Hazrat Shaykh Sahibzada Muhammad HabibUr-Rehman Sahib Mahmoobi on hand to mark the official 50th year anniversary. The Sweet Centre has been passed through three generations of the same family since the doors first opened in 1964 and current owner, Dr Zulficar Ali, said it felt ‘great’ to reach such a milestone. “The Sweet Centre has been supported by people of all faiths, all backgrounds and all political parties since it first opened its doors,” Dr Ali said. “To now be able to celebrate our 50th anniversary, with all the family and guests, it is a great achievement.” The business was initially set up by brothers, Abdul Rehman and Mohammed Bashir, as they brought the concept of an Asian sweet centre and cafe to 110 Lumb Lane. Pulling together whatever money they had, even selling their own possessions, the sibling’s company excelled in the area and today, the same traditional dishes that made the restaurant so popular in the 60’s, continue to be served fresh out of the kitchen.

Family’s touching tribute to son More than three-hundred people gathered at Bradford City Park last weekend to remember a teenager, killed in a car crash earlier this year, and to warn others of the dangers of reckless driving. The event was arranged by the family and friends of Saliq Malik, a local 15-year-old who was tragically killed when the car he was travelling in crashed in Barkerend in September. Suffering serious head injuries at the scene, he was taken to hospital yet sadly died later that same day.

Mr Malik spoke of the dangers of reckless driving and how it had impacted his family who were still struggling with the loss of their son. Described as a child who ‘would want to put a smile on everyone’s faces’, Mr Malik, speaking to the Asian Express previously, added about his son: “He got on with everyone. “He never liked to see anyone upset and would do whatever he could to make people smile. We hope to prevent what happened to Saliq, happening to any other families.” As well as speeches, balloons were sent off into the sky in remembrance of Saliq, before a giant banner was unveiled with the phrase ‘In memory of Saliq, based on the consequences of reckless driving’ written across it, alongside pictures of the teen. A pair of white doves were also released into the sky as a tribute to the life of Saliq.

India’s fourth largest airline’s planes ‘grounded’ IN TROUBLE: Indian-operated SpiceJet Boeing 737-800 aircraft is India's fourth-largest airline by market share
The root of the problem A party can terminate a contract where there has been a repudiatory breach; that is a breach so fundamental that it goes to the very heart of the contract. However, difficulties can arise where it is not clear whether a Court would consider a particular breach to be repudiatory. If the Court does not, the termination of the contract itself will be a repudiatory breach which may give rise to a substantial claim in damages. The case of Valilas –v- Januzaj involved two dentists. The Defendant ran a dental practice and the Claimant practiced pursuant to an oral agreement under which he used the premises, equipment and facilities in return for a payment of 50% of his receipts each month. The majority of the Claimant’s earnings were received from the Primary Care Trust (“PCT”) for which he was paid a fixed price per “unit of dental activity”. The PCT made payments to the Claimant in advance each month but if he did not reach the required number of units by the end of the year, he had to refund the overpayment to the PCT. Following the breakdown of the relationship between the parties, no payments were made to the Defendant by the Claimant on the basis that he was behind on his units and expected to have to refund the PCT and he was concerned that the Defendant would not make the rebate payment to him at the end of the year. The Defendant then excluded the Claimant from the premises. The issue for the Court was whether the Claimant was in repudiatory breach of the contract by not making the agreed payments. If he was, then the Defendant was entitled to bring the contract to an end. If not, then the Defendant would
himself be in repudiatory breach of contract by excluding the Claimant from the premises and would be liable in damages for the resultant loss of the Claimant’s contract with the PCT. The Court of Appeal found that the refusal to make payments did not entitle the Defendant to terminate the contract. The Court took the view that time is not of the essence in commercial contracts, unless the parties have agreed otherwise. Therefore, the failure to make the monthly payments did not constitute a breach of the contract which would have automatically entitled the Defendant to terminate. The obligation to pay on time is an “innominate” term, breach of which would only be repudiatory if it went to “the root of the contract”, would “evince an intention no longer to be bound by the terms of the contract” or deprive the innocent party of “substantially the whole benefit” of the contract. In this case, the outstanding PCT units could have been completed by the end of the year, which would mean that the Defendant would receive all that he was entitled to. There is a difference between withholding payment and refusing to pay at all. This case demonstrates the uncertainty of bringing a contract to an end and the way in which the Court will perceive any alleged breaches. A more appropriate course of action may be to seek a declaration of the Court as whether a breach is repudiatory before a contract is terminated. We at Blacks can assist with the drafting of contracts and any disputes which may arise out of the terms. We also have a specialist Medical Practice Law Department which acts on behalf of dental and other medical practitioners.

India's troubled airline SpiceJet has grounded flights after oil companies refused to refuel any of its planes, reports say. The debt-ridden carrier owes money to creditors, including oil companies. SpiceJet is India's fourth-biggest airline by market share. Civil aviation authorities gave SpiceJet a reprieve when they said state-owned oil companies would be asked to give credit to the cash-strapped airline for up to 15 days. The civil aviation ministry also said that banks or other financial institutions would be asked to lend up to $94m (£60m), backed by a personal guarantee of
SpiceJet chairman Kalanithi Maran, a wellknown media businessman. The ministry said the measures were aimed at avoiding a collapse which it said would be a "major setback" for the airline industry. Correspondents say the government hopes to save jobs and prevent a repeat of the high-profile collapse of Kingfisher Airlines which was grounded in 2012. It is not clear, however, why oil companies have refused to refuel SpiceJet planes after Tuesday's announcements. "Not even a single flight has taken off this morning due to fuel supply issue with the oil companies," sources in the SpiceJet told the BBC
on Wednesday. SpiceJet has $314m (£200m) in debts and it is looking to raise funds. The company has been unable to pay its dues to staff, airports, tax authorities and its lenders. The airline, which has been making losses since last year, is also battling refunds for customers and forced flight cancellations. It has already cut the size of its fleet by a third since September and cancelled dozens of flights a day for the rest of the year. Many analysts think SpiceJet's collapse is inevitable - that the problems are too fundamental to turn around without massive investment.
Qatar Airways receive first A350 European plane-maker Airbus looks set to compete with the classic Boeing 787 and 777 models next year after launching its first A350 mid-sized jetliner earlier this week. Delivering the aircraft to Qatar Airways on Monday, Airbus said it was on course to reaching its production goals with the plane despite releasing the first model ten days later than originally planned. The delay came about after a third party business, used to source items such as seats and galleys, suffered some last-minute problems which were eventually resolved. The arrival of Airbus's newest jet, developed at a cost of £8.6billion brings

the European plane-maker face to face in the world's airports with Boeing's 787, as a new generation of carbon-composite passenger jets offers 25 percent fuel savings. But its development has coincided with a decline in the sales of large fourengine jets like the Boeing 747 and Airbus's A380, the
world's largest airliner with 525 seats. Airbus Group Finance Director Harald Wilhelm triggered speculation over the future of the A380 earlier this month when he said it would break even through 2018, whether Airbus decided to upgrade or ‘discontinue’ it.

CRIME: Secret language exposed ALERT: Police say homeowners should report the symbols if they find them as they can be used in police intelligence
Police are warning homeowners after decoding symbols used by burglars, which act as messages to highlight good theft targets and warn other criminals. The secret symbols which are scrawled outside houses to help other thieves as a guide, may indicate that a home is wealthy, has already been burgled or may have nothing worth stealing. Worryingly, they may also indicate if there is a vulnerable female in the home, or if the occupant is nervous, afraid or an easy target. As well as saying where there are rich pickings, the code also warns if a property is wellguarded or has nothing valuable A simple 'X' means the home is a good target, while the same symbol outlined with a circle means there is nothing worth stealing in the property. A capital D with a dash drawn in it indicates that burgling the house is too risky, while five circles in the shape of a star shows that a property is wealthy. Other marks reveal if a house is
Police decodes street language used by burglars to help fellow criminals target homes alarmed or has already been burgled. Police in Torbay, Devon, posted the symbols on Twitter in a bid to warn homeowners that they may be a target for thieves. DC Steve Fleetwood warns the 'ancient' symbols are being drawn outside homes by criminal gangs. He said: “The Exeter Neighbourhood Team saw them at the end of a few drives, on a few kerbs and on gate posts and we want to warn people about them. 'It is very new to us and we are
just asking people to be aware.” DC Fleetwood says the code could be a valuable tool in the fight against crime. He added: 'Knowledge is power. If we're aware of it happening we can see if there have been any burglaries in the area and we can analyse the data to gather intelligence.' He urged homeowners to report any unusual markings on low-rise walls, pavements or kerbs by ringing 101 or their local police station.

UK came within days of ‘Sydney attack’
Britain thwarted a Sydney-style ‘lone wolf’ attack just days before it was due to happen, London's top policeman said on Wednesday, saying his force had foiled five terror plots in the last four months alone. Britain raised it terrorism alert to the second-highest level in August and last month said it was facing the biggest terrorism threat in its history because of radicalised Britons returning from fighting in Syria and Iraq. “They've been very close to going and hurting somebody, badly, or killing them ... within days,” London's police chief, Bernard Hogan-Howe, said in an interview on LBC Radio. “In terms of plots over this last four months really it’s probably five. And we’ve arrested I think it’s about 35 people.”
Would-be bombers lose appeal Four men, involved in a plot to bomb London's transport network two weeks after the deadly 2005 attacks in the British capital, lost an appeal at the European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday over claims the police had denied them proper legal advice. The men were jailed over the attempt to replicate the suicide bombings on London's transport network, on 7th July 2005, which left 52 commuters dead. Their al Qaeda-inspired attack failed because the home-made bombs they used did not explode. Three of the four would-be bombers, Somali nationals Muktah Said Ibrahim, Yassin Hassan Omar and Ramzi Mohammed, argued they had been initially refused access to a lawyer in police interviews after their arrest. They were all jailed in 2007 for at least 40 years.

Indian car magnate donates £200,000 to the Gandhi statue The Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust has just received £200,000 – the largest donation so far towards the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Parliament Square, London. The donation is from Rahul Bajaj, chairman of Bajaj Auto, to the trust established by Professor Lord (Meghnad) Desai to raise funds for the Mahatma Gandhi statue which will be sited directly opposite the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. Professor Lord Desai said: “This is a wonderful gift for the trust just before the New Year. “Rahul Bajaj epitomises the best of Indian industrialists who have seen the transition of India from colonial rule to independence. “When he called me a month ago to express his desire to donate, he was straight-forward
and impressive. He was happy to give the donation because he is a true Gandhian, and a believer all of his values. “The Bajaj family has been associated with Gandhi for a long time. It is fitting that Rahul Bajaj has made this tremendous gesture.” The trust expects all the money required for the statue to follow swiftly from this major donation. Small and large donations continue to flow in through the website of the trust at www.gandhistatue.org from followers of Mahatma Gandhi in the UK and the rest of the world. With these donations from the general public, as well as pledges still coming in from larger donors, the trust is confident of completing its entire fundraising in January – and will be ready for the unveiling of the statue shortly after that.

Pensioner guilty of acid attack on 19-year-old ex-lover A Wolverhampton Crown Court has convicted an 80-yearold man guilty of masterminding an acid revenge attack on his teenage ex-lover. Mohammed Rafiq had denied inflicting grievous bodily harm on Vikki Horsman, 20, who was left scarred by the attack in April this year, when she was still aged 19. Rafiq had denied arranging the attack in retaliation for Ms Horsman ending the pair's relationship early this year. Rafiq, of Cheshire Road, Smethwick, will be sentenced on 19th December. Shannon Heaps, 23, and Steven Holmes, 25, were also found guilty of plotting to attack Ms Horsman at a house in Tividale, West Midlands. During the trial, the court heard Ms Horsman had entered into a relationship with "controlling" Rafiq when she was 18. He became angered when she broke up with him, and arranged for Heaps and Holmes to attack her with the corrosive liquid. On 15th April, she opened the door of the house in Tividale, West Midlands and was met by a hooded figure who threw acid in her face. Vikki Horsman told the court Rafiq had accused her of cheating on him while they were together. She suffered "horrific" burns as a result, requiring specialist surgery to her face, neck, shoulders, and upper leg, police said. They said Rafiq, who
suffered minor burns himself when he was splashed with liquid, was initially treated as a victim but later charged. He and Heaps, of Queens Avenue, and Holmes, of Allan Close, were found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Rafiq was convicted of a further charge of perverting the course of justice. Speaking after the trial, Ms Horsman told how she had been left with "life-changing" injuries. "I have had to undergo lots of treatment for the burns and the damage those people caused,"
ATTACKERS: Steven Holmes and Shannon Heaps were given the job of carrying out the acid attack by Mohammed Rafiq
she said. "The trauma and distress that Rafiq and his accomplices have put me under have left mental scars that I fear will never go away." Investigating officer Det Con Jason Moseley said the case had been "horrifying and complex" and "centred around a controlling relationship". "Rafiq's young ex-partner was seriously injured and left with devastating, lasting scars, which one can only presume was his intent given the nature of the planned attack," he said.

Police ‘stop plane on runway’ to detain Syria-bound teenager British counter-terrorism officers stopped a plane as it taxied towards the runway at Heathrow to prevent a 15-year old girl from travelling to Syria to join Islamist fighters, according to reports. The girl, from east London, had saved up and bought a ticket to Istanbul without her parents' knowledge. She was removed from the flight and has since returned home but another girl, also aged 15, who was taken off the plane with her, managed to leave before police could intervene, it added. Asked about the report, police said they had received reports about a girl missing from Tower Hamlets. "Officers were able to locate her and she has since returned home safely," a
spokeswoman said, without elaborating. No further details were immediately available. A British Airways spokeswoman confirmed that one of its flights to Istanbul had had to turn back. "There was a flight that had to turn back because two passengers were removed from the plane," she said. Officials estimate that over 500 British citizens have travelled to Syria, where the Islamic State group has seized large swathes of territory, and London's police chief Bernard Hogan-Howe has said some 250 have since returned. Prime Minister David Cameron has warned that returning militants could launch attacks at home.
Disruption investigation launched INQUIRY: London’s airports were affected by significant delays earlier this week due to technical failures
Britain has announced that an inquiry, into a technical failure at an air traffic control centre that caused widespread disruption to London flights last week, will be set up and completed by March 2015. Hundreds of flights to and from London were disrupted on Friday, causing knock-on effects to air travel across Europe, in an incident which
British Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin called ‘simply unacceptable’. The National Air Traffic Service (NATS) and the aviation regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), said on Monday that they would set up an independent inquiry. They said they would appoint a chairman and several experts to study the causes of and responses to the failure, in a
bid to try to avoid similar incidents in future. “I want it to be done as quickly as possible. I do want some speed in this,” McLoughlin told a committee of lawmakers as they grilled him over the incident. He said the inquiry should produce an interim report by the end of January and publish its final findings sometime in March.

December 2014 - 4th Edition New laws put forward by the government will ban smoking in cars with children under 18. The regulations laid before Parliament propose a fine of £50 will be issued to people who smoke or who fail to prevent another person smoking in England. MPs are set to vote on the plans before the election - and if they are passed the change in law will come into force on 1st October next year. The move comes after a free vote in Parliament in February gave ministers the power to introduce the law, although it did not compel them too. Public health minister Jane Ellison said: "Second-hand smoke is a real threat to children's health and we want them to grow up free from the risks of smoking. "The only effective way to protect children is to prevent them breathing second-hand smoke and our plans to stop smoking in cars carrying children will help us to do this." "This, together with the protection of children from second-hand smoke in cars, will help de-normalise smoking and protect children from this deadly addiction." But Simon Clark, director of smokers' lobby group Forest, said: "The government is taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut. The overwhelming majority of smokers know smoking in a car with children is
inconsiderate and they don't do it. "The regulations are unnecessary and excessive. Do we really want to criminalise people for lighting a cigarette in a private vehicle?" A ban on smoking in cars has also been put forward in Scotland and Wales. Deborah Arnott, chief executive of Action on Smoking and Health, said: "We are delighted. We also urge the government to put the regulations on standardised packaging to Parliament before the general election.

SYDNEY SEIGE: Newly wed bride Manal Kassem took a detour on her big day to place her wedding bouquet at Lindt Cafe site as a mark of respect to the victims of the terror attack in Martin Square

Muslim bride catches global attention Hundreds of stunned onlookers in Sydney breaks into applause as newly-wed lays her wedding bouquet as tribute
This bride has caught international attention after laying her wedding bouquet at the memorial site of the Lindt Cafe siege site in Australia. The 23-year-old, identified as Manal Kassem from the Sydney suburb of Punchbowl, made a pilgrimage to Martin Place on her wedding day – Saturday 20th December. The site, where gunman Man Haron Monis held 17 hostages inside the Martin Place cafe, has been turned into a memorial site where thousands have laid tribute
to the victims of the deadly siege. Hostages Katrina Dawson, 38 and Lindt cafe manager Tori Johnson, 34 as well as Monis were killed in the 16-hour stand-off which rocked the nation last week. But at the weekend, all eyes were on Ms Kassem who was adorned in a white dress, hijab and veil when she laid her wedding bouquet on the river of floral tributes to the siege victims. The bride from the Sydney suburb of Punchbowl approached the expanding floral tribute on Saturday with her groom, Mahmod
Homaisi, as hundreds of onlookers stared, a witness said. When Ms Kassem laid her wedding bouquet onto the ground, they erupted into applause. The bride had chosen the city for her big day photoshoot, but changed her mind after the siege, according to her wedding planner. Manal Kassem was adorned in a white dress, hijab and veil when she laid her wedding bouquet on the river of floral tributes for the victims. After watching the wedding party approach, the city crowd broke into

applause. The 23-year-old bride had chosen the city for her wedding photoshoot, but was hesitant after the siege, says her wedding planner. "She was going to cancel (the photoshoot) because she didn't want to be judged... celebrating her wedding in a scarf while people were terrorised," wedding planner Dina Kheir told press. "But she made it her priority to visit the memorial site as the first pit stop. "She did it out of respect for her country, that will one day be the country of her children and grandchildren."
Tunisian’s voted in their new president for the first time in 58 years earlier this week as Beji Caid Essebsi claimed victory in Sunday’s run-off election. The 88-year-old received 55.68 per cent of the votes in a two-way vote after the country’s first free presidential poll since the nation claimed independence from France. “I dedicate my victory to the martyrs of Tunisia. I thank Marzouki, and now we should work together without excluding anyone,” Essebsi said. The process to appoint a new president began back in 2011 when then autocrat, Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, was ousted by the public after an uprising against his ruling. Essebsi’s campaign manager said ‘initial indications" showed the politician had won without giving any details, as hundreds of celebrating supporters chanted ‘Beji President’ and waved Tunisia's red and white national flag. With a new progressive constitution and a full parliament elected in October, Tunisia is hailed as an example of democratic change for a region still struggling with the aftermath of the 2011 Arab Spring revolts. However, rival campaign manager for Marzouki, Adnen Monsar, dismissed the claims saying it was a very close call. Critics have also protested against the announcement, pointing out that Essebsi served under former president Ben Ali, who many say was the cause of the aforementioned revolution.

More hangings after massacre
Pakistan hanged four Islamist militants on Sunday in the second set of executions since the government lifted a moratorium after the Taliban massacred 132 children and nine others at a school last week. None of those hanged had anything to do with Tuesday's school rampage in Peshawar, and some Pakistani commentators have said the executions are intended to divert attention from the failure to satisfy public demands to
find the killers. Four prisoners were executed at the tightly guarded Faisalabad jail for their role in attacking former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf, a senior government official said. Two others had been hanged
at the same jail on Friday. A source in the local Punjab government identified the four as Rasheed Qureshi, Zubair Ahmad, Ghulam Sarwar and Akhlaque Ahmed, also known as Russi, who he said was Russian. Pakistan is home to a range of militant groups, many of them linked to al Qaeda, based in lawless tribal areas. They include an unknown number of foreign fighters, thought to be mostly Arabs, Uzbeks, Chechens and Uighurs.
“Hamas should be removed from terror list” The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas should be removed from the European Union's terrorist list, an EU court has ruled, saying the decision to include it was based on media reports, not considered analysis. In its ruling on Wednesday 17th December, the bloc's second highest tribunal, the General Court of the European Union, said EU member states could maintain their freeze on Hamas's assets for three months to give time for further review or to appeal the verdict. Israel, which has clashed repeatedly with Europe in recent years over Palestinian statehood ambitions, reacted with dismay. "We expect them to immediately put Hamas back on the list," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement, denouncing Hamas as "a murderous terrorist organisation". Hamas holds sway in the
Gaza Strip and its founding charter calls for the destruction of Israel. It has regularly battled against Israel, most recently in a 50day war this summer. Most Western countries, including the United States, agree with Israel that it is a terror organisation, pointing to indiscriminate rocket strikes out of Gaza and waves of suicide attacks, primarily between 1993 and 2005. Hamas says it is a legitimate resistance movement and contested the European Union's decision in 2001 to include it on the EU terrorist list. It welcomed Wednesday's verdict. The EU court did not consider the merits of whether Hamas should be classified as a terror group, but reviewed the original decision-making process. This, it said, did not include the considered opinion of competent authorities, but rather relied on media and
Internet reports. "The court stresses that those annulments, on fundamental procedural grounds, do not imply any substantive assessment of the question of the classification of Hamas as a terrorist group," the court said in a statement. It added that if an appeal was brought before the EU's top court, the European Court of Justice, the freeze of Hamas’s funds should continue until the legal process was complete. Appeals, which can only be based on points of law, typically last about a year and a half. The EU's ambassador to Israel Lars FaaborgAndersen told Israel's Army Radio the body aimed to keep Hamas on the list. "Sometimes the courts come to decisions which surprise us. We need to assemble a stronger case for the listing and this is what we are going to do," Faaborg-Andersen said.

Three dead after 16-hour Cafe siege A gunman, who burst into an Australian chocolate shop taking more than 15 customers hostage, was shot dead alongside two captives on Tuesday, after a tense standoff with heavily armed police. The Australian authorities charged the Lindt Cafe shop in Sydney at around 10am on 16th December, killing the suspect known as Man Haron Monis. The sound of gunfire was heard around the store, whilst explosions are believed to have been flash bang grenades, used by the police before they stormed the shop. Tori Johnson, a manager at the store, was tragically killed, according to Lindt Chocolate Cafe Australia, whilst the other hostage to lose their life in the standoff has been identified as 38-year-old mother of three, Katrina Dawson. Six people at the scene were treated for injuries. Speaking at a news conference during the siege, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot said: “We don't yet know the motivation of the perpetrator. “We don't know that this is politically motivated although there are some indications that it could be. We have to appreciate that even in a society such as ours, there are people who would wish to do us harm.” He later added of the victims: “These were decent, good people who were going about their ordinary lives ... who got caught up in the sick fantasy of a deeply disturbed individual.” Monis was an Iranian refugee and self-styled
sheikh known by authorities for sending hate mail to the families of Australian troops who had lost their lives in Afghanistan. Born in Iran as Manteghi Bourjerdi, he migrated to Australia in 1996, and was involved once again with the law last year, charged with being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife but had been freed on bail. During the siege, hostages were seen in the window holding a black flag with Arabic writing on, and despite initial beliefs it was related to the Islamic State, these links were soon removed. Meanwhile, residents in Australia rallied around the Muslim community during the hostage taking, with many heading to the micro-blogging site, Twitter, using the hash-tag ‘#I’llridewithyou’. Garnering over 110,000 tweets in less than half a day, the message was offered to members of the Islamic faith, from individuals saying they would not be frightened, or hesitate sitting next to, people wearing religious clothing. In September, anti-terrorism police said they had thwarted an imminent threat to behead a random member of the public and, days later, a teenager in the city of Melbourne was shot dead after attacking two antiterrorism officers with a knife. The Lindt cafe is in Martin Place, a pedestrian strip that was revealed as a potential location for the thwarted beheading.

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol celebrate 20 years of their epic ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ love story
screening week of DDLJ Bollywood’s much-loved on-screen couple Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, came together at Yash Raj Film Studios on 13th December to celebrate the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema. The iconic ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ) directed by Aditya Chopra, is an epic ode to love and has been screening at Mumbai’s famous Maratha Mandir cinema for 1000 weeks consecutively since it hit cinema’s world-wide in October 1995. Since the movie’s release, the cult-classic award-winning love story has won the hearts of millions, and it’s influence is considered the benchmark for all love stories produced in Bollywood. “It's been 20 years for this film and I feel honoured that I was part of this film,” commented Shah Rukh Khan.
He added: “It's been 100 years of Indian cinema and I would say one-fifth of it belongs to DDLJ.” The DDLJ pair recreated the ‘DDLJ magic’ as they effortlessly recalled all their fond memories from the film, enacted scenes and recounted dialogues. It seemed like it was only yesterday that the actors worked on the movie. SRK, carrying Raj’s trademark knapsack, filled with memories still reverberating with audiences even today, along with Simran, the ever-bubbly Kajol, shared never before heard movie trivia and anecdotes about director Aditya Chopra and producer Yash Chopra. There was ever a spontaneous request at YRF Studio’s to the wife of the late Yash Chopra, Pam Chopra, who was in the audience, to sing the still popular ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam’. The celebrations continued with the unveiling of the very exclusive and special coffee table book written by the private and reclusive Aditya Chopra, about the making of DDLJ. This marks the first time that Aditya Chopra has shared his thoughts about the creation of this extraordinary film.

Aamir Khan saddened by Uber rape case
Superstar Aamir Khan, who does his bit to bring social change in the country via his show "Satyamev Jayate", is disturbed over the sexual assault on a young woman in Delhi. He stressed upon the need for fast track courts to dispense quick justice in these cases. "What has happened in Delhi is really unfortunate. Each time I read something like this, my heart bleeds. It is really sad," Aamir, who is known to raise society's issues in "Satyamev Jayate", said here in an interview. "If we want the rate of such incidents to come down, then one of the important things we need to do is (facilitate) a high rate of conviction. In the cases of crime against women or children, the first thing we have to do is to have fast track courts," he added. A 25-year-old woman was reportedly raped by an Uber cab driver Dec 5 night after she took the cab around 9.30 p.m. from the capital's Vasant Vihar area. Aamir said there's a dire need to sensitise the public towards law and order to curb the rape incidents and added: "We have to give top priority to the security of women and children."

Freida Pinto and Dev Patel relationship trouble?
Actress Freida Pinto and her long-time boyfriend Dev Patel are reportedly no longer together. The pair, who played on-screen couple in Danny Boyle’s 'Slumdog Millionaire' (2008) have ended their real-life romance after dating for about six years. Though they’ve been going steady for quite some time now, rumours have been rife after some pictures of her and Siddharth Mallya emerged. Freida maintained that she is still serious with her six years younger boyfriend Dev. Slumdog Millionaire emerged as the biggest hit of the year in 2008. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards in 2009, out of which it won eight. Freida Pinto emerged as the next big thing in the industry. The film gained universal acclaim and so did Freida. Her hard-hitting performance coupled with her unconventional looks, carved a strong foothold for her in the industry.

A city that never sleeps, the underworld is at full force, led by a sinister mob that demands obedience and respect. Enter five rebels, who decide that they have had enough of the corruption that has blighted their city, and so decide to unite and expose the corrupt through whatever means necessary. Stunning actress Shraddha Kapoor (Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, Haider) makes a special appearance in an item number not to be missed. Ungli is directed by avant-garde filmmaker and scriptwriter Rensil D’Silva, who is responsible for some of Indian cinemas most thoughtprovoking screen hits, includingKurbaan, Rang De Basanti, Student Of The Year and the Indian version of awardwinning US TV show 24. Perfectly capturing the current mood in India of curbing corruption, bribery and intimidation in the upper echelons of power and authority, Ungli is a beautifully acted and directed narrative that conveys in an effective and humorous manner how five ordinary citizens can make a difference in a city blighted by dark forces, as they literally give the proverbial ‘finger’ to the corrupt and dishonest. Director Rensil D'Silva says it was not easy to direct Sanjay Dutt for upcoming film 'Ungli' at a time when the actor was getting ready to surrender and serve his remaining jail term in the 1993 bomb blasts case.

Range Rover Sport the most desirable car in Yorkshire A list that has been published this week, gives us a breakdown of the most desirable used cars in each region of the UK, and it seems us Yorkshire folk simply love our Range Rover’s. The models in the final listing are based on those that are in high demand and relatively low supply, presenting the greatest opportunity for dealers to sell quickly. Desirability scores are based on an advanced algorithm from Auto
Trader’s i-Control. It analyses a range of metrics from gross margin potential and average market speed-ofsale, to stock volumes, availability and consumer demand. Millions of data sources have been churned into a score presented from 1 to 5 for any used car on the market.

Range Rover Sport the most desirable car in Yorkshire Region by region
Continued from page 71
A score of five is assigned to the most desirable models with one for the least. The figures are updated weekly and in all but one of the regions listed below (Eastern Scotland) the top car has changed in the last seven days. “This is the first time we’ve published a list of the most desirable cars by region,” said Tim Marriott, Auto Trader trade solutions director. “And there are some interesting trends. Range Rover and MINI derivatives are in highest demand in three regions, with a further three top spots being taken by Vauxhall’s Meriva and Mokka. “But while interesting, we should also be clear that this is just a snapshot of the current market,” he added. “Desirability scores for more than half of the models on sale change month-by-month, so dealers can’t afford to stand still. i-Control constantly tracks the live market, to keep dealers up-tospeed and to ensure the stock they buy is always working hard for them. It also helps them manage their forecourts, by recommending price changes to align with the live market.” A wider analysis of i-Control desirability data reveals a significant proportion of dealer forecourts with stock that is not in high demand locally. 20% have forecourts that return an average desirability rating of 2.4 or less. Only 1% report an average of more than 4.0 for their forecourt stock with a further 8% returning a solid rating of between 3.5 and 3.9.

Limited Edition Aston Martin Works, which marks its diamond jubilee in 2015, is celebrating 60 glorious years with the commissioning of six limited edition sports cars. The six bespoke cars, all versions of the current Vanquish super GT in either Coupe or Volante form, are being created in association with the luxury British brand’s Gaydon-based design team, and its ultimate personalisation service: Q by Aston Martin. Each of the six cars will be subtly different, and each is tailored to reflect one of the six decades being celebrated. The result is a collection of rare and ultra-desirable sports cars that will be instantly recognisable as ‘Works 60th Anniversary’ models. A number of elements distinguish the Anniversary cars including trim and paint colour treatments, but perhaps, the most emotive part of each car comes in the form of a fine detail: bespoke rotaries around the major controls in the centre console of each Vanquish.
Aston Martin commissions six exclusive sports car to celebrate 60th anniversary
SPEACIAL: Six bespoke models will be produced to celebrate Aston Martin Works’ 60th anniversary
The process of creating the bespoke Aston Martin Works 60th Anniversary Limited Edition Vanquish models began way back in July of this year, as the Works team met with designers from Aston Martin’s Gaydon HQ to scope out their plans. Unique features in the
anniversary cars include: rotaries made from worked metal of a heritage model piston from the relevant era; distinctive Anniversary Yellow accents on the side strakes and alloy wheels; White/black Duotone seat centre panels; unique sill plaques depicting the era the car relates to and
featuring the Works Anniversary logo; distinctive colour and trim treatments that include features such as contrast yellow stitching in the leather, and new heavy weave carbon fibre. The cars of course retain the standard technical features of the Vanquish super GT such as its 6.0-
litre V12 petrol engine mated in a pioneering transaxle layout to the latest generation Touchtronic III eight-speed automatic gearbox. This provides the Vanquish with genuinely spirited performance: the 0-60mph time is a mere 3.6 seconds and the maximum speed tops 200mph.

80MPH… SIDEWAYS! Coventry Motofest to feature Falken International Drift Team
The UK team of Matt Carter, Paul Cheshire and Kirstie Widdrington plus Irish Drift Champion James Deane are planning to get all four Falkenshod cars simultaneously driving around the Coventry ring road in a spectacular display of car control at speeds of over 80mph - sideways. The four car team includes former British Drift Champion Matt Carter who will be driving his 650bhp Nissan R32 and jumped at the opportunity to take part. "We've all watched the Fast and Furious films or played the street driving games and wanted to drive our purpose built race cars in the city but that was never going to happen these days," says Carter. "What with all the safety and legal issues it was pretty much impossible but the team at MotoFest have done something amazing to pull this off. When we heard about it we just had to be part of it!" “We've all watched the Fast and Furious films or played the street driving games and wanted to drive our purpose built race cars in the city.” With no chance to practice beforehand the team will have to draw on all of its years of experience to get to grips with the much tighter confines of the slippery ring road, hemmed in by concrete walls and barriers. "We usually perform drifting at racetracks," adds team member Paul Cheshire. "The bumps, grids and throw in a greasy layer of diesel, not to mention the unforgiving nature of the concrete

The technology and development of Falken High Performance Tyres and their driving characteristics have for many years been derived from motorsport, most recently its participation in the American Le Mans Series and Nürburgring 24 Hours.

Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to
take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Monday and Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the
country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.
NFA take a HYDE-ing Hyde Park 3-0 NFA With just three games to go in the SLUK division this season, a clash between the top two took place on Thursday and despite many predicting a close affair, it was anything but that. Despite much build-up, it was a one-sided match up with Hyde Park extending their lead at the top to four points, with only two games to go, thumping their opponents 30. A Tyler Bussue hat-trick guided his side to victory and took his own personal tally to 16 for the current campaign. NFA won this fixture first time round with a very disciplined performance, but their performance on this occasion was a shadow of that previous encounter with Hyde Park playing like champions. An early chance for Rippon Ali was the best it got for NFA who lost control of the match early on and could never regain their composure. Hyde Park, playing with patience, waited for the right moment to attack, and it wasn't long before Bussue opened his account for the day, hitting a rocket past the helpless goalkeeper. The talisman had further chances before the interval to double the lead, with Jameel also coming close with an effort at the stroke of half time.
Hat-trick hero Bussue fires Park clear at the top
Hyde Park continued to create openings in the second half and Bussue got his second after some good link up play with Captain Idris Hussain. NFA, unable to retain possession to get up the pitch and mostly penned inside their own half, failed to trouble the opposition keeper in the second period and all but accepted defeat when Bussue

bagged his hat-trick midway through the half. The victors now sit comfortably at the top of the table and it seems that only a Christmas miracle will stop them lifting the SLUK title this season. MOTM: Tyler Bussue bagged a hat-trick and could have had more in a convincing display against NFA

Borussia Teeth 1-0 Half a Dozen
After struggling to find the back of the net in recent weeks, Borussia Teeth finally managed a goal last week which was enough to seal a 1-0 triumph over Half a Dozen Cousins. Having previously boasted the league’s most lethal attacking line, Teeth failed to find the net in their past two games to will have been relieved when they opened the scoring. Victory leaves them with an outside chance of taking third spot whilst their opponents are now guaranteed bottom spot after a tough campaign in the top tier.
Super Six 3-0 Samba
Super Six continued to show why they are receiving so many plaudits in recent weeks as they thrashed a helpless Samba FC 3-0. The victors have proven to be a revelation in recent weeks since a new influx of players were brought in and continue to climb the table, with their fifth win of the season. Meanwhile, it was another game where Samba failed to score a goal as the league’s lowest scoring side still have just seven goals to their name in 16 games.
Tetley’s Tino 3-0 Al Aqs
Al Aqs have been finding their feet in recent weeks with a string of impressive victories yet there was nothing they could do to prevent their 3-0 loss at the hand of Tetley’s Tino. Tino have taken advantage of Borussia Teeth’s inconsistent form in recent weeks to move level on points with the heavy hitters, and remain just below them on goal difference. Bouncing back from their single goal defeat at the hands of Jubodhol last week, the Tino’s also have an outside chance of snatching third place should results go their way in the remaining two match days. Al Aqs, who have climbed away from the relegation spots following some impressive victories, are now guaranteed safety after results elsewhere.
Old Bacca Boys 3-0 Jubodhol
Old Bacca Boys were handed a 3-0 victory after Jubodhol failed to register a team. The three points moves OBB to within one point of their opponents who will be frustrated at missing the chance of moving to within one point of second-spot.

Tyler Bussue had a game to remember as his hattrick helped lift Hyde Park clear at the top of the table with just two games to go. Bussue has been in fine form this season, bagging 16 goals and if his side can register just one win in their remaining two fixtures, the league title will be theirs.

THE MOST ICONIC FIGURE IN THE HISTORY OF SPORT – BOXER MUHAMMED ALI HOSPITALISED By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
Muhammed Ali is currently in hospital with pneumonia and even though it has been reported not to be as serious as initially considered it has caused some concern for the world renowned boxer, considering his Parkinson disease (since 1984) and more recent frail health in general. The 72 year old boxing icon is considered as the greatest boxer in the history of the sport and is probably the most universally recognised sport personality in the world. Ali as a heavyweight boxer was arguably ahead of his time in terms of ability and his physical presence, lightning fast quick hands, excellent foot work as he danced in the ring, technical ability and his biggest asset of all being his boxing brain and courage made him the complete boxer. Ali was an Olympic gold medallist in the 1960 Rome Olympics but threw his medal in the sea after being refused service in a café due to the colour of his skin. He is a three time world champion and his most notable wins are against boxing legends and hall of famers like Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and George Foreman amongst others. Ali in his prime boasted he was “The Greatest” boxer of all time, but what
made him truly great were his actions outside the ring. Ali fought against the prejudices and segregation on grounds of race, religion, fairness and equality as he was not accepted by some of the white Americans especially during the early part of his career. Ali’s most notable stand against the then racist America “according to him” came when he refusal to accept induction into the armed forces on religious grounds that cost him his freedom (as he was jailed), his heavyweight title and millions of pounds in lost revenue. Ali finally retired from boxing in 1981 and has since devoted himself to many social causes including world humanitarian missions. Ali has received the American Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 and has a centre named after him in Louisville, America (his home town) that is dedicated to humanitarian causes and showcases his boxing career. In an interview with David Frost in 1972 Ali was asked how he would like to be remembered and Ali replied the following “I'd like for them to say: He took a few cups of love. He took one tablespoon of patience, one teaspoon of generosity, one pint of kindness. He took one quarter of laughter, one pinch of concern. And then, he mixed willingness with happiness. He added lots of faith, he stirred it up well. Then he spread it over a span of a lifetime, he served it to each and every deserving person he met.” We wish Ali the best of health and hope this “legend of a man” makes a full recovery from pneumonia very soon.
CHAMPIONS: Atletico de Kolkata are the winners of the first ISL tournament after picking up a late 1-0 victory over Kerala Blasters
ISL CHAMPIONS Sixty-one matches, 129 goals and one eventual winner – the Indian Super League has certainly lived up to and exceeded all expectations this year with a final to remember for fans around the world. The match-up between Atletico de Kolkata and Kerala Blasters finally arrived on Saturday 20th December, with a tight affair settled by the single goal. Despite the Blasters being on top for the majority of the game, it was Kolkata who struck deep into stoppage time as substitute Mohamed Rafique headed home a corner to crown his side the 2014 champions. Speaking after the game to Sky Sports, former Liverpool forward and now Kolkata striker, Luis Garcia, said he was delighted to have clinched the championship. “I’m so happy and excited to have won the Indian Super League,” Garcia said. “We’ve

worked so hard as a team over the last three months. It’s been a hard competition with so many games and we will enjoy this win so much because the ISL has been a great tournament. “We struggled in the middle part of the competition. The team couldn’t find a way to win and we were drawing many games but we believed in ourselves from the very beginning. “Our main target was to win this trophy and now we have.” Blasters, who overcame league champions Chennaiyin FC in the semi-finals, did come close to opening the scoring on a number of occasions. The closest of which came towards the end of the first

period, when Player-of-theTournament, Iain Hume, fired in a curling effort from a free kick yet was denied magnificently by shot-stopper, Apoula Edel Bete. Ex-England goalkeeper David James was a losing finalist as player-manager of Kerala and despite his disappointment with the defeat, he added that he could reflect on a ‘wonderful tournament’. “It’s been wonderful to be in the final to start but when you play in a competition there are winners and losers,” the former Liverpool, Manchester City and West Ham stopper said. “We wanted to be the competition’s first winners and we had chances to win the
game. But in the past we’ve played better and lost and played worse and won.” Neither finalist had come into the play-offs as favourites for the title, yet after surprise victories in the semi-finals, the match-up was decided. Meanwhile, individual awards were also presented to ISL’s standout stars with Chennaiyin’s Elano walking away as top goalscorer, and the golden glove award handed to FC Goa’s Jan Seda. Looking back on the season, it is hard to argue that the inaugural tournament wasn’t a success with more than 1.6million spectators turning up to watch the action live, making it the fourth bestattended league in the world.

The Final Mile Countdown begins after
exhausting 2014 challenge Back page story continued From a huge bike ride - from Lands End to John O’Groats, to marathons, half-marathons and daily 10k’s, slowly but surely, the fundraiser has made his way towards his target. Explaining what he has been up to since his last catch-up with the Asian Express, he said: “Since the bike ride I have just been working my way towards the target and continue to do my running every day. “I have been to Pakistan and done some running there which was extremely tough. Running just two miles in that heat felt like 10 and I was in no way ready for
that.” He added: “I’ve also done the Great North Run which was a massive challenge. I hadn’t really trained before it because it was after my bike ride so it really took it out of me. “On the day of the race I was also late so had to park around three miles from the start-line and run that distance before I could even do the race.” Currently, Naheem is running two 10-kilometre distances a day, one in the morning followed up by one in the evening. Due to an injury picked up earlier in his challenge, the charitable runner accepts that he can no longer complete the marathon distances every day but
is confident of reaching the milestone. “Since injuring my ankle back in February, I have been running on with an injury but have been putting off the doctors because I don’t want to stop and rest, especially because I am so close,” he said. “Whenever it does get too much for me, with the pain, I just think of those who I am raising money for and it motivates me to keep going. “As bad as it gets for me, I know that I have a roof over my head when I get home but so many people out there don’t.” Naheem opted to complete 2,313 miles after discovering the distance between the UK and Syria was that distance.

Tour de Yorkshire update Start and finish lines announced for next year’s route
After plans for the first ever Tour de Yorkshire were confirmed earlier this year, cycling enthusiasts around the world were forced to wait in anticipation to hear more of what the inaugural race will entail. Finally this week, the wait was over as details of where the tour will be heading were announced with York, Wakefield, Selby, Scarborough and Bridlington all confirmed as places which will host starts and finishes for the threeday race. A full route confirmation is due to be confirmed on 21st January, exactly 100 days before the start of the race on 1st May. Despite not revealing too much about the route, the announcement does confirm one of the major rumours regarding next year’s event with the inclusion of Bridlington and Scarborough suggesting some of Yorkshire's finest coastal roads may be covered on the journey. Gary Verity, chief executive of co-organisers Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “We wanted to make sure we took the race to parts of Yorkshire that missed out on the Tour de France and I am pleased to say that this first edition will heavily feature the Yorkshire coast. “This was important for us because both ourselves and Christian Prudhomme (TdF director at Amaury Sports
FANS: More than three-million people lined the streets and countryside in Yorkshire when the Tour de France passed through the county earlier this year
Organisation) were disappointed we could not include the coast on the Grand Depart. We are delighted that issue can now be addressed.” Mr Verity also accepted that it may be frustrating for some areas of the region which will miss out on the route but said the organiser’s commitment to run the race annually will give all areas a chance in the future. “The reality is we're never going to satisfy everyone with every edition. There are 10,000km of roads in Yorkshire and our race will do less than 600km every year,” he said. “Simple maths says not everybody will be happy all the time but over a period of time I'm
sure we will get a slice of the action to everyone that wants to take part. “In five years' time I think everyone who wants to be covered will have been. “We were oversubscribed this year and we have already had great representations for 2016 and beyond.” Mr Prudhomme, a key figure in the Tour de France, who will take an active role in events in Yorkshire, said: “I am delighted we are returning to Yorkshire where we saw the grandest ever Grand Depart for the Tour de France. “It is clear the people of Yorkshire are passionate about cycling and we can't wait to bring them this new race.”

Almost 365 days have passed since Naheem Yacub began his mammoth challenge of covering 2,313miles in 2014 and the 28year-old is quickly closing in on his goal. Naheem, from Leeds, has run, jogged and cycled his way to the target over the past year and has even completed parts of his journey abroad in Pakistan and France. Now, having begun the trek on Sunday 5th January 2013, at the Central Lancashire HalfMarathon, the fundraising enthusiast has decided to complete the project at the same
place it began. “I’ve been working towards the 2,313 milestone all year and now that it is so close, I can make sure I finish at the Lancashire run on 4th January (2015),” he said. “It has been really hard in recent months because it has been freezing on a night when I am out running but I cannot stop now and am determined to finish this.” Naheem, a teacher and barber by trade, has been raising money for Leeds Children’s Hospital and British Red Cross’s Syria Crisis Appeal during his run and has raised much more than £1,000 for the charities.
