A Bradford mother-of -two, whose husband tragically passed away four years ago, has been named by one of the city’s top educational establishments as their ‘Rising Star’. Sahdia Ashraf, from Great Horton, decided it was time to do something with her life, after

struggling with the loss of her husband, Navid, through Sudden Adult Death Syndrome in February 2010. With two children to raise, the 34-year-old decided to take up the option of returning to college to complete a beauty course whilst also balancing the ‘life of a busy mother’.

Yorkshire welcomes Royalty Duke of Cambridge flies in to work with Patron charities

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The Duke of Cambridge brought a touch of Royalty to Yorkshire earlier this week as he paid a visit to some of the county’s local institutions. HRH Prince William was given a warm welcome in Bradford where he arrived at a national homelessness charity, with a base at the Bradford Foyer in West Bowling, called Centrepoint. Dozens of children from a nearby school welcomed the Royal Family member outside the gates before he went indoors to meet some of the people whose lives have been helped by the charity. Used to being in-front of the camera on a daily basis, the Prince was given the chance to experience the other side as he helped shoot footage with members of the Centrepoint Parliament and the Bradford media team in a new media suite. The Duke spent more than an hour speaking with youths who use the facilities and receive support from staff which has led to many gaining new skills, securing apprenticeships and finding employment. Martin Gill, Centrepoint’s Head of Housing and Support, said: “There was a high level of excitement among the young people we work with, who the Prince always shows a great interest in. “A visit like this is so worthwhile and you see the impact it has. It really raises the profile of the work we do.” Prince William has been a Patron of Centrepoint since 2005, taking on the role his mother, Princess Diana, once held. The charity, which has been operating in Bradford since November 2013, has been working with 328 young people aged 16-25 each day.

Following his engagement at the charity, he was taken for a brief visit to Bradford Grammar School, where he met pupils and staff, before being flown by helicopter to his next destination in East Yorkshire. The Duke was welcomed to Goole High School as he helped launch a new national award for primary school children. Launched by SkillForce, a charity - of which Prince William is also Patron of - that draws on the values and skills of ex-Forces personnel to inspire young people to achieve at school, the award is handed to primary schoolchildren who excel in a programme designed to develop character and resilience before stepping up to secondary school. Peter Cross OBE, Chief Executive of SkillForce explains: “The SkillForce Junior Prince’s Award is designed to engage younger learners in exciting lessons, challenges and

SkillForce has worked with 50,000 young people in England, Scotland and Wales throughout the past decade, with the Duke being a Patron since 2009.

Mr Khan explained: “What we want to do is get as much stock donated as possible and sold to the public so we can start raising funds for our fight against racism. “I want to post leaflets to every single house in the country, no matter where they are, tackling racist views and spreading the true message of peace.” The store is open, Monday to Sunday, between 1pm and 5pm. Festival fun for all the family Visitors to this year's Bradford Festival will be able to enjoy a vast range of creative workshops and activities thanks to Bradford Council. Many of the workshops and activities will be run by local artists and performers who received special grants from the local authority. Organisers will create a dedicated activities and workshops zone made up of eight marquees and three yurts, special Mongolian tents installed in Bradford's Norfolk Gardens. The festival's activities span craft making, calligraphy, recreating furniture, printing, mask construction, building art installations, dressing up and posing for photographs, and interactive theatre and dance experiences. There will even be an opportunity for women to learn some boxing moves. The Bradford Festival will be staged in City Park between 13th and 15th June.

Super Sahdia Cover story continued Coursework sessions until 3am and sitting numerous exams were juggled alongside school lunches and play time, yet even with such a hectic schedule, Sahdia completed her course two months early. Achieving top grades in all her tests, and producing high quality coursework lead to tutor, Emma Morris, putting Sahdia’s name forward for the accolade of ‘Adult Achiever’ at the college’s ‘Rising Stars Awards’. After being named as winner of the overall Adult Achiever award at the presentation evening, the dedicated student says she was shocked and had never expected to clinch the top prize. “I really didn’t think my name would be said when they were giving out the award and I was just shocked,” she said. “I guess it proves hard work does pay off and I am so happy to have completed the course because there were times that I was forced to overcome some big difficulties.” Sahdia’s youngest son, six-year-old Rayhan, suffers from Autism and Hypersensitivity. Because of his condition, he often required his mother to pick him up from school early or from the child-minder meaning Sahdia would have to leave lessons. She continued: “There were a few occasions where I had to miss a class or leave during one, because Rayhan may have been struggling.

SUPPORT: Sahdia’s husband, Navid Ashraf, sadly passed away on 26th February 2010 from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome

“If Navid had of been here it would obviously have been a lot easier to deal with the kids and the hours of work but without him it was really hard.” “It was hard at times, and I could find myself completing coursework and catching up on lessons at around three in the morning, but I am so glad to have done it now. “If Navid had of been here it would obviously have been a lot easier to deal with the kids and the hours of work but without him it was really hard.” The Bradford mum says she would love to own her own salon one day and would tell anyone thinking about returning to college to give it a go like she did. “It’s definitely one of the most rewarding things I have done,” she said. “After my husband passed away I was just sat at home dealing with Rayhan and Haroon. Both were starting school again in September and I thought they would be fine and it was then that I decided that I wanted to do something with my life. “One day I just applied to Bradford College hoping to clear my head of everything. Two days later I got a letter through saying I’ve got an interview and the lady there said ‘you’ve got in’. “I was absolutely shocked and so happy and would tell anyone thinking about doing a course to give it a go.”

Overcrowded or under-occupied?

A new scheme has been launched by Leeds City Council to help tenants with the costs of moving home, making it easier for tenants to get a home that is the right size for them. Starting from the end of last month, a selection of council homes will be advertised with an incentive package to help tenants cover the costs of their move. The council will also be writing to invite tenants to apply to the scheme to help overcrowded and under occupying tenants find a suitable home through a ‘home swap’ scheme. The council will be contacting tenants on the housing waiting list who are living in a one bedroom property, who are overcrowded, and tenants in two bedroom houses who are overcrowded or under occupying. The scheme will also help tenants living in a property adapted for a disabled person where the adaptations are no longer required.

Walking for Africa

A dedicated group of people with learning disabilities will put their best foot forward later this month to help a community farm in Africa. The group of more than 60 walkers, all from Leeds, will take on the 10k trek on 17th June, hoping to raise cash to improve the lives of people living almost 6,000 miles away. The walk has been organised during Learning Disability Week and will support the charity Africa’s Gift, which works to improve the lives of people in Lesotho and build relationships between different communities. The team of adults, who use Leeds City Council’s learning disability service, have already been hard at work in the gym, training to improve their fitness ahead of the walk.

Over the last few years shops in the city centre’s pedestrianised area have been opening later, with many now open until 8pm, and the peak shopping time on Saturdays is now after 3pm. Key shopping streets such as Briggate, Commercial Street and Lands Lane will soon benefit from being fully pedestrianised until 7pm, rather than the current time of 4.30pm. The new pedestrianised hours will be 10.30am until 7pm, seven days a week, with the changes coming into force from Monday 30th June 2014.

Home Secretary Theresa May has raised concerns about the Department for Education's handling of allegations of extremism in Birmingham schools. The inspection of 21 schools in Birmingham, in the wake of the socalled Trojan Horse allegations, was a response to claims of a takeover strategy by a hardline Muslim group. Now, the Home Secretary has asked Education Secretary Michael Gove about claims that his department had been made aware of allegations back in 2010 and Birmingham Council two years earlier than that. In a letter, Mrs May said: “The allegations relating to schools in Birmingham raise serious questions about the quality of school governance and oversight arrangements.” She also probed whether it was true that Birmingham City Council was warned about these allegations

in 2008 and that the Department for Education was warned in 2010. Mrs May, is now demanding answers to these questions and why action was not taken sooner. Mr Gove believes there has been a plot by extremist Muslims to take over schools in Birmingham and feels that there is reluctance to tackle the issue in government departments, especially the Home Office.

Ranbir has already met prime ministers and politicians in the past, and visits the House of Commons on a yearly basis, yet he says he had never expected to be granted the ‘honour’ of meeting a member of the Royal family. Speaking before his visit to the capital, he explained how proud

Serious failings Commission find inadequacies in West Yorkshire force handling complaints of discrimination

SCRUTINISED: IPCC Chair Dame Anne Owers comments on the findings of the report, which addresses the handling of police race discrimination complaints

Other findings from the report 8 out of 10 cases were not properly assessed, failing to take into account the gravity of the complaint and/or the officer’s previous disciplinary record; In 42% of cases, local resolution was being inappropriately used in cases that needed to be investigated because if substantiated they might have led to misconduct or criminal proceedings; 60% of local resolutions and 44% of investigations did not meet basic standards, and this rose to two-thirds and a half in cases that were handled at local level, rather than by professional standards departments; In nearly a fifth of cases, complainants were not directly contacted, and around twothirds of eventual decisions were poorly communicated to complainants; In a quarter of investigations, findings were not based on evidence and in general the balance of probabilities was not properly applied.

DEPORTED: Afusat Saliu was sent back to Nigeria earlier this week along with her daughters Rashidat and Bassy

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

An Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) review has found significant failings in the way West Yorkshire, along with two other large metropolitan police forces, handle complaints of discrimination. The findings embarrassingly show that generally complaints of discrimination made by members of the public, are poorly handled right from the beginning through to the end. The IPCC examined 202 completed cases to determine how West Yorkshire, West Midlands and Greater Manchester police forces deal with allegations in relation to any kind of discrimination including race, disability and age. Threequarters were race allegations. Of 170 complaints from the public alleging discrimination only 94 were investigated and of those no discrimination allegations were upheld – yet overall the three

forces uphold between 11 and 13 per cent of complaint allegations from the public. By contrast, over half of the 32 investigations into discrimination allegations raised by the police themselves were upheld. The report found that there was insufficient training in diversity, and that this both results in complaints and means that they are not well handled. Traditionally, complaints are dealt with by local officers, not specialist professional standards departments, and the quality of complaint handling at local level is clearly worse. The report accentuates that a significant amount of training and support is needed to provide information, influence training and standards, and monitor outcomes. IPCC Chair Dame Anne Owers said: "Our findings are stark. "It is vital that police forces deal effectively with allegations of discrimination. “For particular sections of the community, likely to be more

distrustful of the police, or more vulnerable - or both, they are litmus test of confidence in policing as a whole and of the police’s understanding of the communities they serve. "While we welcome the fact that officers are prepared to report and challenge their colleagues when it comes to discriminatory behaviour, allegations made by members of the public need to be handled equally seriously and dealt with effectively.” The report makes a series of recommendations for improving the quality of investigations into discrimination allegations, on training for both frontline and complaint-handling police personnel, and on ensuring meaningful contact with complainants. As well as reviewing case files, the IPCC will use the study to inform a review of its own guidance to all police forces in England and Wales on dealing with allegations of discriminatory behaviour later this year.

FGM campaigner flown back ‘home’

A Nigerian mother-of-two has been deported from her Leeds home after failing in her fight to stay in the country. More than 125,000 people had signed an online petition to allow Afusat Saliu and her two young daughters to remain in the UK, yet the calls fell on deaf ears as the family were flown back to Nigeria on Tuesday 3rd June. The family, who had been living in Leeds, had been fighting against the decision as Afusat feared her children were at a risk of becoming victims of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). FGM is not illegal in Nigeria and Afusat – a victim of the act – had voiced her concerns about the danger for her daughters, as well as her own fears of being forced to wed. Marvina Babs-Apata, Project Manager at Angel of Youths in Leeds, says she was not overly surprised to hear about Afusat’s deportation yesterday, adding that ‘we must now hope that people keep

their promises to her’. “I think we’ve all been following the campaign over recent weeks and months but I also think many kind of knew in the back of our minds that this was going to happen,” she said. “I believe she has been taken to Lagos where she will be safe and I hope that they will not take her anywhere else that could danger the family. “Because she has openly criticised Boko Haram and said she is Christian, she would be in danger if not protected so we need government agencies to keep their promises.” Marvina, also from Nigeria with children of a similar age, added that the likelihood of her friend ever returning to the UK is slim with deportation ‘a one way street’. “Her chances to come back now seem minimal,” she said. “Everyone in Africa wants to get out of there and there are so many cases that I unfortunately don’t think Afusat will come back.”

Future of Film

An academic from Leeds says he has found his ‘calling’ after seeing his short film aired nationally on the BBC’s website. 23-year-old Hassan Abdullahi, from Harehills, produced his video about life growing up in Leeds, as part of the ‘Writing Britain’ project, delivered by Studio 12 and Leeds City Council. Alongside 15 other young writers, the former Manchester University student was tasked with creating a short film reflecting on his own aspirations and time growing up in Leeds. The movie was then produced to industry standard by production company, ‘Left Eye Blind’ and out of all the entrants just three were selected to be aired at the city’s Everyman Cinema in Trinity Leeds. Hassan’s dark film was one of the selected pieces and due to its high commendation, has now been selected to air online at BBC Fresh. For the avid writer, the news came

as a surprise but he says he is now more determined than ever to pursue a career in production. “When BBC got in contact, I didn’t even know at first,” he said. “It was the guys at Studio 12 who told me that my film and two other candidates were going to be involved in the Fresh programme. “I was obviously very happy and it really did motivate me to continue doing what I enjoy.” He added: “The reason I started this whole thing was because since leaving university I had not been able to find work. Since I couldn’t find anywhere to work, I decided to find a way to create work for myself and do something positive that can also help others. “I was already motivated academically and had always loved writing so when this project came up I never had any doubts about it.” The BBC Fresh site promotes the work of budding filmmakers and each of the three films will be

Hassan, who says his film has some darker, more serious shots in it, explained why he believes his past experiences have helped him excel in the production project. He said: “The experiences I have been through, a bit of hardship, a bit

A tall challenge

June 2014 - 1st Edition

CLIMB: Local youth leader for AMYA Huddersfield, Kamal Aftab, enjoys a cup of tea at the summit of England’s highest mountain, Scaffell Pike

Trekkers scale mountains in fundraising mission A team of determined Muslims pulled on their walking boots and headed to the mountains last weekend as they aimed to raise thousands of pounds for charity. 30 members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) scaled the UK’s three highest peaks in an attempt to raise £7,500 for the British Red Cross. The members pushed their limits to the max as they hiked up Scaffell Pike, in England, Ben Nevis, in Scotland, and Mount Snowden, in Wales, in under 33 hours. The group said they were hoping to spread the message of peace by completing the walk whilst also dismissing false stereotypes that have

been ‘given to Muslims across the UK’. Dr Aziz Hafiz, Chairman and leader of the Three Peak Challenge said the group had been training for a long time before last weekend and was proud to be helping out such a worthy cause. “We do a lot of work with the British Red Cross and are honoured to be raising money for such a fantastic charity,” he said. “At the peak of each mountain we all offered a prayer of peace to pray for Great Britain and the amazing British Nation. “Some people unfortunately assume that there is a conflict between being Muslim and British. For us, as well as the

other 7,500 young British Muslims who make up AMYA, it is our faith that drives us to love this great country and its people so much.” This is the third year running that the AMYA team has raised money for charity through similar initiatives. The last two hikes saw trekkers raise more than £40,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and The British Heart Foundation by scaling The Mont Blanc Range in the French Alps, whilst runs and cycle events have also been held in recent months.

If you would like to sponsor the hikers for their latest accomplishment please visit their Just Giving Page at www.justgiving.com/teamsMKA3peaks2014

Mandela celebrations

Local primary school pupils joined dignitaries from Leeds and South Africa for a vibrant celebration of the legacy of Nelson Mandela earlier this week. On Wednesday 4th June, a special event saw young people welcome three representatives of the South African High Commission to Leeds Civic Hall as

the city marked 20 years since the end of apartheid. Minister Counsellor Dumisani Ntuli, Counsellor Bilateral Allan Wright and First Secretary Carol Mabuza travelled to Leeds for the event, where they were entertained by readings and performances by local youngsters and community groups. The colourful celebration was

aimed at ensuring young people have the chance to learn about Mandela’s visit to Leeds, which saw him receive the Freedom of the City in 2001. Pupils from Bramley Primary school performed their special Mandela song and poets from the Hamara Centre also gave a reading.

Tax credits claimants reminded to renew it or lose it DEADLINE: Last year 65,000 claimants of tax credits missed out because they didn’t renew by 31st July

For many large families, tax credits are a lifeline in making ends meet. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is sending out 5.8 million tax credits renewals packs which will arrive by 30th June. Over three million of these claims need to be renewed before the deadline for claimants to continue receiving tax credits. Last year some 650,000 claimants had their money stopped because they did not renew by the 31st July deadline. Claimants must tell HMRC about any changes to their circumstances that they haven’t already reported, including changes to working hours, childcare costs and income, or if a partner has moved in. This year, as well as being able to renew by post and by phone,

claimants with no changes to report are also able to renew online, via GOV.UK. Nick Lodge, HMRC’s Director General, Benefits and Credits, said: "People should check their details and renew early to make sure they get the right money. Don't leave it – people who don't renew on time risk losing their payments." Before checking their form or calling HMRC’s Tax Credit Helpline, claimants are urged to have the right documents to hand, for example, payslips, end of year P60 forms and childcare payment details. The advertising campaign runs throughout June and July on radio, television, bus shelters, and via a mobile app, Spotify and video on demand.

Q&A with your property law solicitor

INNOCENT: Paragon Pizza owner, Razaul Karim, was one of the three members of staff who were searched by police following the hoax call

Hoax callers charged Leeds pair set for court date after ‘cruel prank’ Two men from Leeds have been charged over terrorism hoax calls which occurred last year resulting in a North Yorkshire town being locked down by armed police. The centre of Knaresborough was cordoned off by armed police on the 16th October after they received a number of phone calls reporting an ‘immediate threat to members of the public’ at the Paragon Pizza takeaway in High Street. Dozens of officers, armed with submachine guns and baton round launchers arrived at the scene to detain two staff members outside the establishment, whilst a third was arrested moments later. After a search of the premises and the individuals, the report was labelled as a ‘cruel prank’ which had been targeted at the completely innocent

owner and his staff. A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said a 23-year-old man from the Chapeltown area of Leeds was charged earlier this week with three offences of communicating a bomb hoax, whilst a 22year-old man, also from the Chapeltown area, was charged with perverting the course of justice and making a false statement to obtain insurance. Speaking about the way the North Yorkshire Police addressed the situation, a statement on the authority’s behalf, released soon after the incident, read: “…Our prime concern during the incident was to ensure the safety of members of the public. As a result, we ensured a rapid police response to the town centre.” Both men, being charged with the case, are due to appear at Harrogate Magistrates’ Court in June.

DIN Solicitors specialise in various areas of law. This week our solicitor will be discussing frequently asked questions in relation to residential conveyancing.

• What is conveyancing? Conveyancing is the term given to the process of transferring legal ownership of land and property. Conveyancing can include sale, purchase, and re-mortgaging.

• How long does conveyancing take? The conveyancing process does not have a fixed duration. Much depends on whether or not there is a mortgage, the cooperation of all parties involved etc. A straightforward conveyance where there are no major problems can be completed within 6-12 weeks. However please note this is a guide only; some conveyances may take longer and some may be completed sooner.

• How much does conveyancing cost? There are two costs – one is the legal fee and one is a fee for disbursements (see below). The legal fee will depend on the purchase/sale price of the property and whether a mortgage is involved. We are able to provide a fixed fee which is very reasonable and competitive. • What are disbursements? Disbursements are expenses paid to third parties and which are incurred in the conveyancing process (e.g. property searches, Land Registry fees etc). We have excellent contacts with search providers and can obtain competitive quotes for search fees.

• What are the different types of searches? The main searches include the following: • Local Authority Search – this reveals the property’s planning history and any future planning proposals likely to impact the property. • Drainage Search – this tells you whether the drains run into a private or public sewer. • Land Registry Search – this reveals if there are any undisclosed mortgages on the property. • Land Charges Search – this is usually required by the mortgage lender to ensure you are not bankrupt. • Environmental Search – this reveals if there are any waste disposal sites in the locality and whether there is any risk of flooding, subsidence etc. There may be other searches which may be applicable to your conveyance. Please contact us and we will advise you further.

VICTIMISED! Café owner targeted by racial slurs By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A woman has been forced to pay-out almost £1,000 after being found guilty of a racist outburst at a café owner in Ossett. Last year, Martha KollehMcBurrough made national headlines after posting a sign outside her Yeanon café in the town warning people to ‘beware she is ‘black’. Three months later and the small business owner was the victim of such verbal abuse by a woman who claimed she had seen the mother-of-two bump her car in the car park. Care worker, Laura Mitchell, 25, stormed inside the café to confront Ms Kolleh-McBurrough about the action, and whilst holding

her three-year-old daughter, called her a host of names including ‘black b***h’. Mitchell is also alleged to have threatened to slap the victim, magistrates in Wakefield were told. Ms Kolleh-McBurrough said: “She was calling me all the names in the book. She was really, really angry.” Mitchell, a mother-of-two also from Ossett who was seven months pregnant at the time, denied the claims Ms Kolleh-McBurrough told her ‘you’re accusing me because of the colour of my skin’. She said she had only gone into the cafe to exchange insurance details with Ms Kolleh-McBurrough who then proceeded to stand ‘right in my face, yelling and waving a spatula about in a threatening manner. She

seemed very irate’. Witness, Andrew Morris, contradicted Mitchell’s statement and said he told her directly that ‘there’s no need for racism’. Prosecuting, Martin Sleight said: “The complainant came across as an honest and truthful witness who hadn’t come to court to make a malicious allegation against the defendant.” Adding in reference to the cafe owner’s sign, he said: “She felt that people were racist towards her. I do not believe that people of Ossett are generally racist.” Ben Tighe, for Mitchell, said she was of

previous good character but added: “Racism cannot and must not be tolerated in our society.” Mitchell was fined £485 and ordered to pay a £300 victim surcharge.

A group of students from three Kirklees schools will be heading down to the House of Commons next week after getting top marks in an election-based competition. The ‘My Country My Vote’ initiative saw three schools across the region take part in a project looking at the development of democracy and the process in

fostering debate and creating change. The students from the participating high schools had the unique opportunity to deliver their own campaigns related to the British Youth Council’s ‘Make Your Mark’ top five issues as voted by young people. These ranged from better work

experience, funding for youth services, raising the national minimum wage, euthanasia rights and a 16-19 bursary fund. After groups in each school campaigned tirelessly on their chosen issue, from December 2013 to April 2014, a winner was selected through a voting process at the schools.

Now, here is an opportunity for Yorkshire to welcome an internationally renowned sporting event and I can’t wait. “The hard work has already been done by the team who attracted the Tour to Yorkshire and the county’s brand has grown in a way that cannot be bought. Millions of pounds have been invested into the Yorkshire brand because of PR and that is only going to bring positive results.” Mr Pervez says he will be attending the race with colleagues and his grandchildren and hopes to see Yorkshire’s communities unite for a celebration of sport. “Everybody from businesses, citizens and the city’s governing bodies should be taking advantage

of the Tour,” he said. “If you and your friends can make it out on the day and help increase the size of the crowd, it would help show our passion for the sport as pictures are beamed across the world. “We need to show the world that we are cultured in Yorkshire and passionate about more than just Yorkshire puddings. We need to get out there and get connected to the wider world, whether it be on an individual, social or economic scale.” He added: “It is not too late for businesses to still get involved. Just visit the Welcome to Yorkshire website and find the best way to get your company benefitting from the Tour.” The team presentation ceremony will commence on Thursday 3rd July at Leeds’ First Direct Arena before pedal power is put into full force at the Grand Depart from 11am on the Headrow. COLLECTION: Mr Nazir has collected tens of bronze and silver coins over the years

COLLECTOR: Nafees Nazir has more than 100 items which date back thousands of years in his home

Ancient treasures History and heritage are key for local collector An avid antiques collector from Bradford has been showing some of his favourite pieces to the Asian Express and explaining why his hobby carries more than just financial value. Nafees Nazir, 45, from Heaton, has been purchasing antiquities for more than 20 years after picking up his first item, a 100-year-old book, for just 10p at a flea market. Since then, Mr Nazir’s passion for the hobby has seen him acquire some remarkable objects from all around the world, dating back thousands of years and passing through tens of generations. From coins to rings, chess pieces to jewellery and even a giant slab of stone, his collection is one which has seen some of the most important historic events pass by. Speaking about why he enjoys collecting so much, he said: “It has grown into a real passion of mine because every item, no matter how big or small, has such a story behind it. “There are items which date back thousands of years so imagine the amount of wear some of these things may have had. “This collection of rings

for example; some are more than a thousand years old and if you think about who could afford jewellery back in them days, it was only the select few. One is even silver which will have been extremely rare for that period. “The odds are that they were reused by people throughout different generations because they were a luxury item. The antiques trade is the first example of recycling really. “The sentimental value they have held is amazing and to think how far they have come makes me really interested to learn more.” Amongst Mr Nazir’s ever-growing collection is a pouch of bronze and silver coins originating from as long ago as the Persian Empire. Silver coins were produced by placing a blob of metal on a piece of hard wood and the design of the coin, carved in reverse, on a piece of hard steel. After compressing the two together the design would stick on the softer silver metal. As the Islamic Empire widened in Byzantine Lands, the coins were then modified to include Islamic phrases which are clearly seen on many of Mr Nazir’s

collections. “It is something that really interests me with the coins because each one is from a different period,” he said. “Some have been found by metal detectors and then just dug up from the ground, whilst others I have purchased from collectors all around the world.” Mr Nazir also showed one of his ‘favourite’ pieces, an old chess piece dating back one thousand years, and explained how it proved to be one of his greatest finds. “This is actually made of alabaster stone, which is a kind of marble, and would be used as the Knight in a game of chess,” he said. “I bought it from an Australian dealer who literally sells antiques from every era and has been doing so for more than 30 years. “I purchased it for under £500 and took it down to London to be verified and valued, and they told me it was worth in excess of £5,000.” Mr Nazir continues to collect antiquities from around the world and if you would like to see more, please visit www.islamique antiques.com

CAMPAIGN: Founder of Karma Nirvana, Jasvinder Sanghera, and West Yorkshire Police Assistant Chief Constable, Ingrid Lee, at a recent Leeds road show highlighting the danger surrounding forced marriages

West Yorkshire Police have teamed up with two partner agencies to help stamp out forced marriages in today’s society with a new campaign launched last week. As of the 1st June 2014, forced marriages are illegal in the UK and any person’s found guilty of committing the crime could face up to seven years imprisonment. A series of radio advertisements are now being broadcast with posters and leaflets also being released across the county which emphasise the ‘right to choose’. A charity which supports victims of the crime, Karma Nirvana, helped publicise the information at a roadshow last week alongside the local police force and the Home Office Forced Marriage Unit. Although latest statistics released by the government’s Forced Marriage Unit show that they handled 1,302 cases in 2013, Karma Nirvana founder, Jasvinder Sanghera, believes the actual figure of couples involved in forced marriages is over 100,000 in the UK. West Yorkshire Police’s Assistant Chief Constable John Robins has released an on-line video to raise awareness and urges people not to suffer in silence. “Forced marriage is a crime where one or both spouses do not, or cannot, consent to the marriage and duress is involved,” he said. “This can include physical, psychological, financial, sexual and emotional pressure. “But let me make it really clear that this is not the same as an 'arranged

marriage’ which is a totally legal practice and involves the consent of both spouses.” ‘Forced Marriage’ is not specifically attached to a particular belief, culture nor is it condoned through religion. The majority of reports received by West Yorkshire Police relate to women or girls aged between 13 and 30. However, victims are not exclusively female, both men and women, young and old can be victims of forced marriage. “Someone forced to marry may find it very difficult to take action to prevent it happening or initiate action to end a forced marriage,” Chief Constable Robins added. “They may be subjected to sexual and ongoing domestic abuse, and in some cases, suffer violence and abuse from extended family members. These victims can end up feeling trapped in a relationship through violence and abuse. “We will be taking a ‘victim led approach’ in delivering the new Forced Marriage legislation. This will respect the views of victims, provide the necessary support, confidentiality and protection from harm.” A dedicated page has now been launched on the West Yorkshire Police website, www.westyorkshire.police.uk /forcedmarriage which provides information and advice around the latest legislation. Anyone can report an offence or suspected offence in confidence and anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or direct to the police on the non-emergency number 101.

A Silver Star

AWARDED: Mrs Hawa Bibi Laher OBE received the Silver Teaching Award for ‘Headteacher of the Year in a Primary School’ for her work with Huddersfield based Spring Grove Primary School

Hudderfield's very own ‘Headteacher of the Year’ A local headteacher has been given an A* grade for her work at a Huddersfield school which has been officially rated as Outstanding for the past eight years. Hawa Bibi Laher OBE has already been honoured by the Queen for her services to education and earlier this month she was confirmed as the recipient of the ‘Silver Pearson Teaching Award’ for ‘Headteacher of the Year in a Primary School’. Mrs Laher, originally from South Africa but residing in Mirfield, has been at the Spring Grove Primary School since 1997 and took over the reins as headteacher in 2004. The single form entry school has more than 200 pupils and has been commended by Ofsted as one of the best primary educational establishments in the area. During Mrs Laher’s time at Spring Grove she has worked closely with the local community to make it excel in the area with students from all backgrounds attending. This latest award is a prestigious accolade, which will eventually see Mrs Laher visit the House of Commons for Celebratory Tea, yet she insists that the greatest part for her was the recognition she had received from her staff. “To be put forward for an award by my colleagues was the highlight for me,” she said. “It meant far more to me knowing that they believe in me than actually getting the

trophy which I am very proud to receive. “A school is not just about children it is about staff, parents and the community as well. I’m only as good as my staff and I see it as an award for everybody involved with Spring Grove.” Mrs Laher added her praise to the rest of the school, without which ‘this award would not have been possible’. “It really is a lovely, amazing school to work at,” she added. “All the pupils are so polite and well behaved but that is also because of my fantastic team of staff and teachers who only want the best for every single child. “I am very lucky to be headteacher here and grateful to everybody for helping us become recognised as the outstanding school which we are.” Deputy Headteacher, Debbie Kelly, put her colleague’s name forward initially for the award and says she more than deserves all the plaudits that come her way. “Bibi is an outstanding leader and role model,” she said. “This is a much deserved award recognising the dedication she has given not only to our school but to all the partners with whom we work.” Mrs Laher was presented with a trophy at the school in a special assembly on Monday 19th May and is scheduled to visit the House of Commons on the 24th June.

Summer Solstice Festival People from all over the UK will be arriving in Leeds City Centre later this month to celebrate the break of dawn on the longest day of the year, at the 2014 South Asian Arts-UK, Summer Solstice festival. Brimming with mystical, musical charm, the all-night concert is the only one of its kind in the UK and is taking place in the heart of Leeds City Centre. For those new to the festival the performance aims to highlight the magical qualities of an oral ancient, music tradition that is rarely performed. Running for its third year, the extravaganza of music encompasses a unique array of internationally acclaimed artists of Indian classical music who will take the audience on a ‘raga’ and a journey from the sunset through to sunrise.

The inspiration behind the festival comes from Keranjeet Kaur Virdee, Chief Executive of SAA-uk, who established the concert in response to increased artists demands. After the success of previous year’s events, she says she cannot wait for June’s festivities to begin and explained where the event came from. She said: “The idea came to me when I heard musicians talking about the compositions of music they spend a long time practicing but rarely get chance to perform. “A raga uses a series of musical notes upon which a melody is constructed and is associated with a time, season or emotion. “Rarely do musicians have the opportunity to play late at night and into the early morning, times

Bradford and Syria children show ‘What is Home’

A unique project has been launched in Bradford which will see pupils from local schools strengthen their ties with fellow students from Syria. Five schools from the city have been taking part in the ‘What is Home?’ project spearheaded by Human Relief Foundation (HRF) and Horton Grange primary school. Youngsters, from both countries, have been tasked with drawing their idea of home on a small piece of canvas material with all the final pieces then sewn together to make a giant patchwork canvas which will be officially unveiled by the Lord Mayor of Bradford during Refugee Week. Representatives from HRF have recently flown over to Jordan, where many Syrian refugees have been living since fleeing from their war-torn homes, to see children complete canvases of their own. After depicting their images of home on a small piece of material, the HRF team then teamed up with schools in Bradford to hold an identical project with local schoolchildren. Qais Khaliq, HRF fundraising co-ordinator, explained how the project came about. “Human relief foundation has been working with refugees for more than 20 years and did some work with Horton Grange last year,” he said. “We have been talking

for a while about doing some sort of art project which can help link children in Bradford with children in Syria. “This idea of ‘What is Home?’ will see the children in Bradford and the children in Syria both complete the same work which will allow people to visually see the contrast between what is happening in both countries.

Copthorne, Southfield Grange, Lidget Green, St Oswalds and Princeville. Nick Bell, Headteacher at Grange Technology College added: “We are delighted to be able to involve our students in contributing to the canvas patchwork for Refugee Week. “We will be promoting the event across the Southfield Grange Campus

“We want the children here to learn how lucky they are and that not everybody is as privileged as others.” Local sewing group, Sewing Bradford, will be voluntarily stitching the massive canvas together at the end of this month which will take hours of work. Schools involved in the project include: Horton Grange Primary,

to help raise awareness amongst our students of the types of issues and challenges faced by refugees.” Horton Grange Primary are currently working towards a ‘City of Sanctuary award’ which highlights the positive work an educational establishment does in regard to refugees.

New look play area welcomes everyone PLAY: Cllr Mark Dobson with Rochelle Bodey (left) and Madeleine Bodey (right) at Home Farm's refurbished children's play area

There’s no place like Home (Farm) By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

With the summer weather just around the corner – hopefully – a popular Leeds farm has got a new look play area which will keep kids entertained in a safe surrounding. Already proving a bit hit with youngsters under the age of eight, the Home Farm play area has been transformed and extended to provide greater and improved accessibility for the disabled, with a host of new fun equipment. Youngsters can enjoy a play on the new tractor, swings, see-saw, climbing frame and slide whilst musical equipment has also Thrill seekers and fundraisers are being asked to step forward this weekend to help raise money for the Bradford Lord Mayor’s charity appeal. On Saturday 7th June, volunteers will ‘take the plunge’ as an abseil event is held at the top of Jury’s Inn, on Thornton Road, raising funds for Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure. The Lord Mayor has already signed himself up for the abseil, along with the Chairman of his Appeal, Manoj Joshi, and students from Grange Technology College who have been volunteering with the Lord Mayor’s Appeal throughout his

Funding for the scheme has been provided from Leeds City Council’s Aiming High For Disabled Children capital short break fund, which enables disabled children to enjoy days out with their friends and family. Home Farm boasts over 400 sheep, pigs, poultry and goats, along with a mixture of recreated workshops and exhibitions, and continues to be a big hit with visitors both young and old. Councillor Mark Dobson, Leeds City

Council’s executive member for the environment praised the renovations and looked forward to seeing them bring joy to the visiting children. He said: “Home Farm is a really lovely place for all the family to visit, and it was fantastic to be at the official opening of our refurbished toddlers’ play area on the site. “A range of new equipment has been installed including a play tractor, new swings, see saw, climbing frame and slide, and it was fantastic to see so many youngsters already enjoying the play area, which I am sure will be extremely popular for many years to come.”

Take the plunge civic year. The abseil, now in its 11th year, has helped raised thousands of pounds for a variety of local charities since its introduction and this year’s event looks likely to build on its previous success. The Lord Mayor said he is excited about the prospect of taking part and hopes he can help raise vital funds for his chosen charity. “I am really looking forward to the event, there will be a great view of the City if I dare to open my eyes,” he said.

Meanwhile a teddy bear zip wire challenge from Bradford Cathedral Tower will also be held on Saturday between 2pm and 5pm for children’s brave cuddly creatures. The Lord Mayor added: “I hope people of all ages as well as cuddly toys of all shapes and sizes will sign up to take part to raise money." The Speed of Sound I

n a previous article we looked at the case of Lawrence –v- Fen Tigers Ltd & Others, concerning noise nuisance. The decision has recently been overturned by the Supreme Court in the appeal case of Coventry –vLawrence. A claim for nuisance arises where there is a continuous, unlawful and indirect interference with a person’s enjoyment of land or his rights over it. In this case, the Defendants owned a sports complex comprising of a stadium used for speedway and stock car racing and a track used for motocross racing. The Claimants purchased land nearby and alleged that the use of the track and stadium generated noise amounting to a nuisance. The Defendants had obtained a certificate of lawful use for the stadium meaning that the stock car racing was considered lawful. They had also obtained planning permission for the track, which included restrictions on days and times of use and levels of noise. The Claimants alleged that they had not been aware of the various forms of motor sport that took place at the sports complex and brought a claim in nuisance. The Defendants denied that a nuisance existed and stated that they had taken steps to minimise any noise by erecting sound barriers. The High Court ruled that the activities had constituted a nuisance and granted an Injunction. The Defendants appealed to the Court of Appeal on the basis that the High Court had failed to take into account the planning permissions which had been granted and the fact that the implementation of those permissions had changed the character of the locality. The Court of Appeal agreed and

held that whilst a planning authority could not authorise the commission of a nuisance, the implementation of planning permission could change the character of the locality. Accordingly, the Defendants had not caused a nuisance. The Supreme Court has now overturned that decision and reinstated the Injunction. The Court found that it is possible to obtain an easement to commit what would otherwise be a noise nuisance, albeit that in this case such a right had not been acquired. In order to establish a prescriptive right, it would be necessary for a party to demonstrate that it has generated noise amounting to nuisance for a minimum 20 year period prior to any objection being made by the neighbouring owner. The Court confirmed that it is no defence to a claim in nuisance to argue that the Claimant commenced occupation of its property after the nuisance had begun (in other words, that the Claimant ‘came to the nuisance’) where the Claimant’s property was being used for substantially the same purpose as it had been by its previous owners. Such an argument may be more successful if for example a Claimant’s property had been modified in such a way that it was only after that modification that the activity became a nuisance. Finally, the Court confirmed that a Defendant’s use of land can be taken into account when assessing the character of the locality, but only insofar as it is not a nuisance. It will not normally assist a Defendant to argue that they have planning permission to carry out the activity. We at Blacks can advise and assist with the obtaining of Injunctions for a variety of issues, to include claims in nuisance.

A flying force India look to the skies for latest defence

PURCHASE: India will buy more than 100 fighter planes from France in the deal worth billions of pounds

WELCOMING: India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, hopes to build up relations between the world’s two most populous countries

India expects to seal a close to $20 billion deal to buy 126 fighter jets from France's Dassault Aviation within three months, a newspaper reported on Tuesday, as part of a $100 billion defence modernisation plan. Completion of the deal would mean the first 18 Rafale jets arriving from mid-2016, with manufacture of the remaining 108 beginning in India in 2018, the Times of India

said, citing defence ministry sources. New Delhi had picked the Rafale fighters for exclusive negotiations in January 2012, but a plan to finalise the deal by March this year was postponed after India's military exhausted its capital budget. A defence ministry official said the new government had just moved into position and it was too early to talk about wrapping up the

45

jet fighter negotiations. "The report is speculative, the defence minister has not applied his mind to the issue as yet. He is busy with budget meetings," the official said. Dassault declined to comment. India, the world's biggest arms importer, is in the midst of a $100 billion defence modernisation programme to replace Soviet-era planes and tanks, and narrow the gap with China, with which it fought a war in 1962. But the upgrade programme moved slowly under the last government, partly because of the then-defence minister's insistence on transparency and integrity in defence procurement, long dogged by allegations of kickbacks.

APPROVAL: The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh appeared in the new state-coach for the first time on Wednesday as they rode to the opening of parliament

A quite Royal ride New carriage takes a look through British history

China-India relations China's foreign minister will visit India next week for the first high-level meeting between the two countries after new Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Foreign Minister Wang Yi would arrive in New Delhi on Sunday for a two-day trip as a special envoy of China's President Xi Jinping. Hong said that Wang would meet Indian officials, including the country's new foreign minister, though he added that the agenda was still being worked out and could not say if

Wang would also meet Modi. Modi last month invited Xi to visit, seeking greater engagement between the world's two most populous nations on issues of trade and regional security. Beijing has yet to formally respond to that invitation. The last Chinese head of state to visit India was Hu Jintao in 2012. The Hindu nationalist Modi won election by a landslide, ending a decade of rule by the Congress party that for most of the time since Indian independence in 1947 has been associated with a policy of non-alignment.

It is not often that the Royal Family’s horse-drawn coach is featured in the news yet this is no ordinary mobile. Earlier this week HRH the Queen rode to the opening of parliament in a brand new Australian-built state coach that encapsulates nearly a thousand years of British history. Crafted over nearly a decade, the gilded Diamond Jubilee State Coach is only the second new horse-drawn state carriage to be built in more than 100 years. Oozing in history, the coach contains wood from King Henry VIII's flagship the Mary Rose, which sank in

1545, and Isaac Newton's apple tree, which inspired him to form his theory of gravity. It is covered in more than 400 books of gold leaf and seems to be a hit with the 88-year-old sovereign and her 92year-old husband Prince Philip, who both enjoyed the ride on Wednesday. The carriage is almost five and a half metres (yards) long, more than three metres high and weighs more than three tonnes. The coach was made by Australian craftsman Jim Frecklington in his workshop in the Sydney suburb of Manly. “This coach is different to any other coach made in history, as it

Seven more years Al-Assad retains power in ‘meaningless’ election Despite the country being in the midst of a brutal civil war, kick-started by public protests against their leader’s rule, Bashar al-Assad has kept his seat as President of Syria following a landslide election victory. Assad captured 88.7 percent of the votes whilst his two challengers, Hassan al-Nouri and Maher Hajjar, won 4.3 percent and 3.2 percent

respectively. The victory gives Assad a third seven-year term in office despite voting only being held in governmentcontrolled areas, excluding vast chunks of northern and eastern Syria that are in rebel hands. The head of the Supreme Constitutional Court said on Wednesday that the turnout in the country's presidential election this week was 73.42 percent. Minutes after results were

Altaf Arrested

Pakistan MQM Leader detained on suspicion of money laundering CONTROVERSIAL: Altaf Hussain, leader of Pakistan’s Muttahida Qaumi Movement, was arrested in London, with many fearing riots in the Karachi state

The controversial Pakistani politician, Altaf Hussain, was arrested at his London home earlier this week, according to his office in Edgware, sparking fears of a violent backlash in Pakistan. Hussain, who is leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the most powerful political party in the Karachi state of Pakistan, was detained by police on Tuesday 3rd June on suspicion of money laundering. Although Scotland Yard did not identify him, they said a 60-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of money-laundering during an early morning raid on a house in northwest London with special operations officers searching the property. A British citizen, Hussain has lived in exile in the UK since 1991, yet still rules the party despite being more than 4,000 miles away. Following the news of his arrest, an immediate lockdown took place in Karachi, with local shops and businesses closing, whilst streets were gridlocked as people attempted to get home. The news was expected to see riots break in the streets as Hussain’s notorious following took to protest the decision. Hussain, one of Pakistan's most divisive and

controversial leaders, is wanted back in his home country in relation to a murder case, yet has lived in London in self-imposed exile since the early 1990s. Known for his fiery addresses to his supporters in Karachi through a loudspeaker connected to a telephone, he effectively controls the violent port city from London. His hold on Karachi is so strong that he is capable of shutting down entire neighbourhoods of the city of 18million. Supporters praise him as a business-oriented leader of Pakistan's middle class, but opponents describe him as a tyrant and accuse him of murder and violence. Within minutes of his arrest, panicked shopkeepers and market stall owners rushed to close their businesses for fear of violence, with the British High Commission even shutting down temporarily. “We deployed extra security at the British High Commission in the southern part of Karachi as soon as we learnt about Altaf Hussain's arrest in London through media,” Deputy Inspector General Abdul Khalique Shaikh told Reuters. “We have increased police patrolling and we are making further deployments at sensitive spots in the city.”

Qatar Controversy

Issa Hayatou, head of the African Football Confederation (CAF) and vicepresident of FIFA, has ‘categorically’ denied allegations in Britain's Sunday Times newspaper that he received gifts and money to support Qatar's bid for the 2022 World Cup. The newspaper claimed it had obtained millions of documents which they say show Qatari former FIFA executive committee member Mohamed Bin Hammam made payments totalling around $5 million to football officials in return for votes for Qatar. A statement released by CAF said the allegations against Cameroonian Hayatou were ‘fanciful’, ‘ridiculous’ and formed part of a ‘smear campaign’ against him. Hayatou is also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and was reprimanded by that body in 2011 for receiving 100,000 French francs from FIFA's scandal-ridden former marketing agency International Sport and Leisure (ISL).

Referendum D-day closes in

The formal campaign for a Scottish independence vote that could break-up the United Kingdom began on Friday, although polls currently show Scots are unlikely to choose to end the 307-yearold union with England. Scottish nationalists hope the desire for independence, historical rivalry and what they say has been centuries of mismanagement by far-off leaders in London will drive Scots to vote for secession in the 18th September referendum. Britain's main politicians have united against a breakaway, issuing pleas for unity and warnings about the economic costs of independence to the 4million Scottish resident voters over the age of 16 who can participate. Polls show Scots are unlikely to vote to break the union, with roughly 40 percent against independence and 30 percent in favour. But there are still enough undecided to swing the vote.

Iconic ArcelorMittal Orbit pledges support for students SOLID: The project is symbolised by the distinctive 114.5m ArcelorMittal Orbit sculpture designed by Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond

ArcelorMittal – the world’s leading steel and mining company – has made a major donation to Birkbeck, University of London, to sponsor students in east London and widen access to higher education. Birkbeck, known as London’s evening university, exists to provide educational opportunities to busy Londoners, including those who have missed out on conventional higher education. As part of the three-year ‘Learning Ladder’ gift, the company will pay for four undergraduate student bursaries, tuition fees for one postgraduate student, and support for a student researching a PhD in crystallography – the study of atomic and molecular structures, such as steel. The funding is the first in a string of local community initiatives planned by the company throughout 2014. It is part of a programme aimed at contributing to the wider regeneration effort, symbolised by the distinctive 114.5m ArcelorMittal Orbit sculpture designed by Anish

Kapoor and Cecil Balmond. To qualify for the funds, applicants are required to receive a household income of less than £25,000 and reside in east London.

– a £33m state-of-the-art shared campus in Stratford, east London, which was built on land provided by the London Borough of Newham. Tricia King, Pro-Vice-Master Strategic Engagement and Recruitment at Birkbeck, said: “Birkbeck is very grateful for this funding as it will provide opportunities for people otherwise unable to study because of financial constraints. ArcelorMittal’s support will help the College pursue its goal of meeting the growing aspirations of the people of east London.” Ian Louden, Head of Brand at ArcelorMittal, said: “We want the striking ArcelorMittal Orbit to be seen not just as a memory of an amazing Olympic Games but also as a beacon for the regeneration of East London which was an inherent part of London’s bid to the International Olympic Committee. Our support for lowincome, locally-based students at the Stratford campus of Birkbeck University of London is part of our community engagement programme focussed on this regeneration objective.”

ArcelorMittal’s support will help the College pursue its goal of meeting the growing aspirations of the people of east London.” The partnership has been forged with Birkbeck, which is committed to widening access to higher education in east London. In November last year Birkbeck and the University of East London opened University Square Stratford

Nine years for 0.04g of Cocaine A British student, who claims he was tortured by police after being arrested in the United Arab Emirates, has been jailed for nine years for possessing cocaine worth less than £5. Ahmad Zeidan, 20, from Berkshire, says he was tortured into signing a confession after being arrested in December. Kate Higham, an investigator with the legal charity Reprieve, described last week's conviction at a hearing in Dubai as ‘the result of a shockingly flawed trial process’, as Zeidan claims he was held incommunicado for several days when he was hooded, beaten, and threatened with rape. The drugs – 0.04g of cocaine with a British street value of about £3 – were found in a bag in a glove compartment.

Reprieve, which says it has uncovered evidence of a systematic pattern of torture in UAE prisons, has sent a dossier to the UN special rapporteur on torture on behalf of 19 prisoners. It details a pattern of abuse that includes hooding, beatings, threats of rape and extended periods of solitary confinement.

Higham said: “The UAE must urgently reconsider Ahmad's case, while the British government must do all it can to push for his release.” A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are aware that a British national has received a custodial sentence in the United Arab Emirates. We are providing consular assistance.”

Look the Ku Klux Klan…No it’s just an England fan CONTROVERSIAL: The ‘wearable England flag’, launched by Asda, has come in for some criticism due to its resemblance of Ku Klux Klan uniforms

Whilst England’s national football team are over in Brazil, trying to put an end to 48 years of hurt, millions of patriots will be cheering on the national side from British shores. Classic jerseys will once again become common sight and accessories from headbands to car flags and horns to sunglasses will all be thrown on in an attempt to cheer Hodgson’s men to victory. However, one item of clothing which will be debuting this year comes courtesy of supermarket giants, Asda, who have launched a ‘stay-dry’ poncho. The only problem is; it looks a bit like the Ku Klux Klan. The multi-million pound business has defended the

‘wearable flag’ following criticisms of its appearance which features a hood to allow fans to stay dry in the unpredictable British weather. A host of fans have taken to Twitter to point out the similarities with the hoods worn by the racist US organisation, also known by its initials, KKK, and the latest Asda clothing line. One user, called Kieran, posted a picture of himself wearing the outfit, writing: “Asda are selling wearable England flags, they look dodgy to say the least …” Another user, called Simon, replied: “ENGLAND RULES OKKK' honestly, do Asda simply not bother to see how these things look when

worn? *sigh*” The flag's description on the Asda website simply says: “Support England in the World Cup with this unique wearing flag!” A company spokeswoman said it had also produced a wearable Brazilian flag before the competition, with starts on 12th June. “We know there's chatter on Twitter about our wearable World Cup flags, but it's simply a flag which has a hood – nothing more, nothing less,” she said. “We opted for a hood on our wearable England and Brazilian flags as you never know what the British weather will bring. We want customers to get behind the team without getting wet.”

FATAL: Gopinath Munde was seen as one of the most important figures in the BJP’s plans to encourage growth in the Indian economy

BJP loses ‘crucial’ ally after fatal traffic collision Just eight days after Narendra Modi was welcomed as the new Prime Minister of India, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has lost one of their top ranked allies, tasked with helping to revitalise the Indian economy. Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde died on Tuesday 3rd June after a road collision in New Delhi. The politician was on his way to the airport when his Sedan was hit by a car and he subsequently died from his injuries in hospital. The 64-year-old’s body was brought to the party’s headquarters where dozens of supporters swarmed the flowerbedecked truck, with Modi laying a wreath whilst consoling the family. “My tributes to a dynamic leader whose premature demise leaves a void hard to fill,” Modi said in a Tweet, amid a flurry of tributes from allies and political opponents. “Condolences to Munde's family. We stand by them in this hour of grief.” India's roads are amongst the most dangerous in the world, and the capital, New Delhi, ranks near the top of cities that account for the most fatalities. Modi had entrusted to Munde the crucial task of spearheading a battle on poverty in the countryside, home to more than half of India's population of 1.2billion, but which contributes just 14 percent of gross domestic product in Asia's third-largest economy. The minister was sitting in the back of his Maruti SX4 sedan when it was hit on the side by a Tata Indica saloon, whose driver, police said, remained in custody. Munde's driver and a personal assistant survived. Doctors tried to revive Munde for 50 minutes after he was taken to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in the capital, a hospital spokesman said, adding: “There was no spontaneous breathing, no pulse, no cardiac activity.” India is the world's capital of road deaths, thanks to a lethal brew of poor road planning, weak law enforcement, a surge in trucks and cars, and a flood of untrained drivers. More than 230,000 people were killed on Indian roads in 2010, at a rate of almost 19 deaths per 100,000 people. As many as 15 people died in road accidents every hour in India in 2012 with 53 injured in the same period, the National Crime Records Bureau says. Munde becomes at least the third senior Indian politician to die in a car crash in recent times. The Congress party's Rajesh Pilot, a former transport minister, was killed in 2000, and Sahib Singh Verma, a former BJP labour minister, in 2007.

• • FUN: Children in the Bihar State were given toys to help them develop both ‘emotionally’ and ‘cognitively’

Bringing toys to India A UK charity has teamed up with a South Asian NonGovernmental Organisation (NGO) to support recreational activities for underprivileged children in India. The Shining Hope Foundation provides grants to specially selected projects across the world and has now partnered with Inter’Lude to bring a smile to some of India’s poorest children in the Bihar state. The NGO has an outstanding track record in helping local children develop emotionally and cognitively through specially selected educational toys and games, whilst embracing cultural differences. Inter’Lude works to create activities in local schools, where all too often pre-school educational programs lack the necessary equipment and the

qualified teachers to implement them. The programme involves both indoor and outdoor activities as well as simple arts and craft projects. The games are also kept within local traditions and religions with all toys resourced locally at markets or made by local craftsmen. Each ‘angawadi`, or preschool, is led by a ‘shevika’ a female nursery worker, who is also being trained on how to use the toys and games and to stimulate and encourage the children. With more than 100 million people, Bihar is the country’s third most populous state. More than 40 per cent of people there live below the poverty line, mainly in rural areas with inadequate access to health, education and other services.

India bans testing cosmetics on animals

LABS: Not all brands employ animal testing in their research processes for products and ingredients but a sizeable portion definitely do

India has outlawed the testing of cosmetic products and their ingredients on animals. Following a 45-day public consultation period, the ban came into effect on Friday May 24th, and announced by India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The removal of animal testing follows an intense campaign by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India and work by MP Maneka Gandhi and others. “This landmark law will ensure not only that the lives of countless animals are spared but also that only humanrelevant, modern, nonanimal testing methods are used to assess the safety of cosmetics products in the country,” says PETA UK's Mimi Bekhechi. “Because animal-tested

cosmetics can still be sold in India, however, PETA India and its international affiliates are now urging the government to ban the sale of cosmetics if they or their ingredients have been tested on animals. “Such a move would bring India in line with the European Union and Israel, nations that have already banned the sale of animal-tested cosmetics.” With this ban, India joins a list of countries like Brazil, Australia and New Zealand.

anytime for doing a film together. When we asked Sonakshi, besides Akshay, who she thinks is just a phone call away in the vast film industry, before batting her eyelid she said: ‘Salman can call me anytime because he is the person who introduced me to this industry’. She says that Salman opened the doors to her acting. “He is the key to my destiny, to my profession, which I didn't even know that I wanted to be a part of it,” she added.

“I owe my entire career to him and his family.” She made her debut in the Hindi film industry with 2010's ‘Dabangg’ opposite Salman Khan, which went onto become the highest grossing Bollywood film of the year. She won a number of awards for her debut. Prior to ‘Dabangg’, Sonakshi was a costume designer, putting outfits together for films like ‘Mera Dil Leke Dekho’ in 2005. She also walked the ramp at the Lakme Fashion Week 2008 and then again in Lakme Fashion Week 2009. The 27-year-old actress has shed pounds of weight for her on-screen glamour since she begun.

Rani Mukerji impresses as fearless and gritty cop

The first look of YRF’s Rani Mukerji starrer ‘Mardaani’ is out. Starring Rani Mukerji in the lead, playing the role of a cop for the first time, this raw and gritty film will be a distinct departure from Pradeep Sarkar’s style of filmmaking. Rani plays the character of Shivani Shivaji Roy, an astute cop working in a Mumbai Crime Branch unit. Deft at picking up hidden clues and fearless in confronting hardened criminals, Shivani stumbles into

the world of debauchery, cruel desires and exploitation and onto a case that will change her life forever. A teenage girl is kidnapped by the child trafficking mafia and smuggled outside the city. Shivani embarks on an obsessive hunt for the girl and what follows is a cat and mouse game between a fearless cop and a ruthless mafia kingpin. Directed by Pradeep Sarkar and produced by Aditya Chopra, the film will release worldwide on 22nd August 2014.

Sapna Pabbi signs three film deal with Bhatt camp Anil Kapoor’s discovery in his TV series ‘24’ seems to be escalating to new heights. The actress, Sapna Pabbi who played his doting daughter Kiran in ‘24’ moved on to be the lead in John Abraham’s production ‘Satra Ko Shaadi’. Now, Bhatt brothers Mukesh and Mahesh have signed her for a three-film deal. The first film helmed by Karan Dara who has assisted Mohit Suri for the last seven years would see Sapna as the lead. The film is essentially a love story and also stars Ali

Fazal and Gurmeet Chaudhary. On touching base with Sapna she stated that: “I am happy the way my career is shaping up, but at the moment I can’t reveal much about the film or the role. “I would be starting the workshop soon which would give me an opportunity to know my co actors better.”

Arfi Lamba is on cloud nine these days, reason being he’s been offered an international film with Akon and Lady Gaga. The name of the film is ‘The Key Project’ and it is directed by Will'o (Pantheras Films) who’s directed many television productions and commercials and has been in the business for over 14 years. Arfi will be the only Indian in the film. Arfi clarifies: “Yes, I have been offered the key project though right now it's too early to reveal any further details. “I am really excited about working with AKON, Lady Gaga and the project in general. Lady Gaga is doing a small but very important role in the film.” ‘The Key Project’ is a film about real experiences that successful people have gone through to get to where they are today. Will 'O stated: “Success means a lot of different things, from health, finances, and many others... we want to capture the different stories from celebrities to teachers, to show the power of never giving up”.

Sajid Nadiadwala’s HEROPANTI likely to cross 50 crore mark Despite opposition like Rajinikanth's ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ and the usual nitpickings from the honourable critics, the audience has demonstrated for the millionth time that it has a mind of its own. Yes, we are indeed talking about Jackie dada’s young and handsome son Tiger Shroff’s ‘Heropanti’. The reasonably budgeted 25 crore,

(around £25,000) all inclusive film is on way to be the next hit of 2014, and just as we had predicted, the Sabbir Khan directed ‘Heropanti’ is all set to give the industry its next young star after Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh! Coming to the actual stats, after netting an impressive 35 crore (to be validated) during the opening week, Sajid

Nadiadawala’s ‘Heropanti’ is doing quite well in its second week too. This has broken former box office records for a debutant. ‘Heropanti’, which was released only in India, is likely to cross the 50 crore (£50,000) mark by the third week and is sure to achieve a hit status, even without resorting to nontheatrical rights.

Patralekha:

Doing lovemaking scenes isn't easy

India is just in the middle of another newbie making her Bollywood debut. We’re talking about Patraleka who’ll be seen in Hansal Mehta’s ‘Citylights’, paired opposite her real life boyfriend and award-winner Rajkummar Yadav. The film’s promos show some

lovemaking scenes between Rajkummar and Patralekha. Talking about it she says: “There are a few lovemaking scenes but I would not call them bold because it’s an integral part of the storytelling. “I didn’t have any apprehensions because I knew the script. Hansal sir was directing it. I had seen his body of work and I exactly knew what he wanted out of it.” Asked whether she was comfortable during the lovemaking scenes,

and Patraleka replied: “Shooting lovemaking scenes with Rajkummar wasn’t easy. I don’t know why it would be easy if it was Rajkummar or XYZ because there are people who are seeing you and it’s being filmed. “It’s a personal zone you are getting into and ultimately it will be shown on the big screen. “But Hansal sir made me comfortable. He asked everyone to leave except the key people who were required for the shoot.”

Getting to know

Mumzy Introduce APR Gents Grooming HAIR, BEAUTY & SPA

Award winning UK star Mumzy Stranger returns with 'Get To Know', set to be one of the anthems of the summer. One of the UK's most loved British Asian artists, Mumzy Stranger has been delivering hit after hit for years. The multitalented singer, songwriter, producer from East London follows up the infectious 'Love Comfort' with a slice of smooth nostalgic R'n'B. 'Get To Know' sees Mumzy return to his roots, by reworking one of the tracks which first brought him to the attention of Asian music fans around the UK. On his latest release, Mumzy says: "A lot of my fans were in their early teens when I was making songs like 'Get To Know' in my bedroom. At the time the production was simple but the fans related to the lyrics and enjoyed the catchy melodies. A few years on and these same fans who have grown up to my music have been repeatedly asking me to officially release some of the classic tracks which they still

listen to on YouTube or their old iPods. So this is for everyone to remember and enjoy the good times." 'Get To Know' is a catchy R'n'B track perfect for the summer and true to Mumzy's trademark urban style of melody, lyrics and production. Incredibly the song, which first surfaced around seven years ago, has built a cult following on YouTube over the years with around half a million hits on a number of unofficial versions uploaded by fans. With no official release, no video, no promotion, the song has organically become a fans' favourite. Mumzy continues: "As my fan base has grown over the last few years, whether it be for me as an artist or as a producer for the acts that I've been working with, the audience has been discovering and rediscovering my older material. So tracks like 'Get To Know' have continued to build in the online space. I feel the time is right to officially release an EP of some

of these tracks and give the fans the songs that they've been requesting on social media and at my live shows on many occasions." The video for 'Get To Know' was shot in Morocco and the location plays the perfect backdrop to the fun, upbeat track. The song self produced by Mumzy's own Stranger Productions as well as his young protege Lyan Roze and X11. Mumzy, a previous winner of the 'Best Urban Act' award at the UK Asian Music Awards, has of course produced for a host of British Asian artists over the last few years, namely Junai Kaden, Tasha Tah and Nafees. He has also collaborated with a who's who of the Asian music scene, Rishi Rich, Malkit Singh, Jassi Sidhu, H Dhami, Preeya Kalidas, Sophie Choudry to name a few, amassing a hugely impressive catalogue of hits over the years. Mumzy Stranger's latest single 'Get To Know' is out to buy on iTunes and all major digital outlets now.

Riding a Bollywood theme

June 2014 - 1st Edition

Bombay Bicycle Club breaks the confines of indie music

Riding on the wave of a No.1 UK album and a critically acclaimed live show, Bombay Bicycle Club have released what will surely be the of summer, the soundtrack Bollywood inspired ‘Feel’ as their next single. The album ‘So Long, See You Tomorrow’ - their fourth in five years saw the band that are not even halfway through their twenties, break through the traditional confines of indie music. In making ‘one of 2014’s most exhilarating returns’, (NME) Bombay Bicycle Club have become one of UK’s most innovative and important bands. The third single from the album, ‘Feel’, is an uplifting sing-along favourite and a sure-fire festival hit this summer. A surge of optimism built on a Bollywood movie sample from the legendary Lata Mangeshkar's classic 'Man Dole Mere Tan Dole'. 'Feel' samples the snake-charming melody from the 1954 movie 'Nagin', with

warm electronic basslines, exotic percussion, and soaring string-driven melodies. The band, who are signed to Universal's Island Records, were guests on the BBC Asian Network this week and spoke to Nihal about the new single and their experience of India. Lead singer Jack Steadman says: "When I’m in Mumbai, which is one of my favourite places, there’s just this energy there which motivates us to create and be productive so it was the perfect place to go and write music. We stayed there for a month in the end and wanted to make the most of our trip." On the current single 'Feel' and the use of the classic Bollywood sample, Steadman adds: "This is the most infectious piece of music I’ve heard in a long time. I’ve got hundreds of old Hindi film songs, from the 40’s through to the 60’s. Sometimes I go to Southall and do a bit of record shopping."

And finally on the band's Indian inspired name 'Bombay Bicycle Club', they went on to explain: "It was the name of a restaurant we actually drove past on our way to our first gig. We were panicking because we actually didn’t have a name!" Having completely sold out European and UK tours at the beginning of this year, Bombay Bicycle Club followed with a critically acclaimed Brixton Academy show, garnering rave reviews. The band are developing an impeccable reputation for their visually and audibly arresting live show. They have just completed a visit to the US for a huge 31 date tour including Coachella, followed by a string of UK festival dates including Latitude, Reading & Leeds and T in the Park. It seems like 2014 is Bombay Bicycle Club’s for the taking. Their new single 'Feel' is out now.

have we made some great music, we’ve become great friends in the process.” ‘Keep The Hustle’ sees Raghav feature on an electronic laced hip hop fusion with a distinctly Eastern feel. The loud, up tempo anthem is taken from the soundtrack for ‘Million Dollar Arm’, composed by AR Rahman. The soundtrack, which also features rapper Iggy Azalea, KT Tunstall and ‘Jai Ho’ singer Sukhwinder Singh, has received huge critical acclaim since the film’s release in America this month, with many likening it to Rahman’s Oscar and Grammy award winning masterpiece ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. Raghav has previously collaborated with AR Rahman on the Bollywood hit ‘Ishq Shava’, taken from the 2012 release ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ starring Shahrukh Khan. Most recently Raghav also featured on another AR Rahman soundtrack, the big budget visual spectacle ‘Kochadaiiyaan’, which released in cinemas recently, providing lead

vocals on the Hindi song ‘Aaya Khwaab Ka Mausam’. The theatrical number is a Hindi interpretation of the Tamil soundtrack, showcasing Raghav’s artistic versatility, and he plans to continue working on more soundtracks, as well as release his own forthcoming pop single. Raghav adds: “I'm in the studio now doing at least one song maybe more on the upcoming film ‘Lekar Hum Deewana Dil’, another collaboration with AR Rahman. As well as that my next solo single is coming soon, produced by Afrojack so I’m excited for that. It’s cool I’m dipping in and out of so many things at the moment.” Raghav’s forthcoming single ‘Take Me Away’, a collaboration with international superstar DJ Afrojack is expected to release worldwide this summer. ‘Keep The Hustle’ featuring Wale, taken from the soundtrack ‘Million Dollar Arm’ is out now, with the film expected to release in UK cinemas in August.

Epitome of perfection By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

The Ferrari F12berlinetta has been awarded the Compasso d’Oro (Golden Compass), one of the oldest and most prestigious international design accolades. Ferrari’s Senior Vice President of Design, Flavio Manzoni accepted the award on behalf of Ferrari in the Officine

Ansaldo exhibition hall in Milan. In presenting the award, the ADI design jury praised the F12berlinetta for its flowing, dynamic forms that use innovative aerodynamic solutions in a true marriage of technology and aesthetics. Designed by Ferrari’s Styling Centre in collaboration with Pininfarina, the F12berlinetta is the most powerful, highperformance Ferrari road car ever built and epitomises the perfect balance

between maximum aerodynamic efficiency and the elegant proportions typical of Ferrari’s front-engined V12 cars. This important accolade is not the first for Ferrari. In 2001 Luca di Montezemolo received the Compasso d’Oro for the company’s achievements as an innovative industrial and engineering reality. Ferrari was praised for its incessant technological research and its universally-

acclaimed aesthetic excellence which is the result of an entrepreneurial culture which puts the requirement of the people who work at the factory, and the working environment in general, at the heart of all developments. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Compasso d’Oro which was instituted to recognise and promote Italian design excellence. The award ceremony is held every three years by an international jury of designers, specialists, historians and journalists, and just 20 awards are assigned to those products that, in the previous three years, have been judged to exemplify Italian creativity and expertise.

TRAGIC: Sadly the Woerthersee GTI Roadster will never go on production for the real world

Concept Woerthersee GTI Roadster, designed for gaming, turns into reality

By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

Volkswagen is turning the virtual world into reality this weekend, as it presents the GTI Roadster concept at the famous Woerthersee GTI meeting in Austria. The GTI Roadster was originally created as a purely electronic car, to feature in the Sony PlayStation® 3 classic, Gran Turismo 6 (GT6). The result of cooperation between Volkswagen and Sony Computer Entertainment, the GTI Roadster is the work of three young Volkswagen designers, winners of an in-house competition to design a vehicle to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Gran Turismo game. Unconstrained by the constraints of production models – for example feasibility and price – designers Malte Hammerbeck, Domen Rucigaj and Guillermo Mignot came up with a winning design that was selected by Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand, and Kazunori Yamauchi of Sony Computer Entertainment, the creator of the Gran

Turismo series. The virtual car was unveiled on 26 May, and just days later, Volkswagen is presenting it made real, at the annual gathering of GTI fans on the shores of Woerthersee. The GTI Roadster draws on last year’s Woerthersee car, the Design Vision GTI, but with an even more extreme design. Its 2,494 mm wheelbase is 137 mm shorter than that of the production Golf GTI, and also shorter than the wheelbase of the Design Vision GTI. The GTI Roadster’s minimal height (1,090 mm) and extreme width (1,894 mm) versus its overall length (4,158 mm) help create jawdropping proportions. Power for the two-seat GTI Roadster comes from a 3.0-litre V6 biturbo TSI engine that produces 503 PS, and maximum torque of 560 Nm between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. Some 500 Nm of torque is available from just 2,000 rpm. Power is delivered via a sevenspeed DSG gearbox and 4MOTION four-wheel drive, helping to propel the 1,420 kg

GTI Roadster from zero to 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds, and on to a top speed of 190 mph. Stopping power is suitably prodigious, thanks to ceramic brakes that nestle behind 8.5 J x 20-inch wheels with 235/35 tyres at the front and 9.5 J x 20-inch wheels with 275/30 tyres at the rear. The exterior of the car is painted a new colour, called Gran Turismo Red, which is designed to make the GTI

Roadster look fast, even when it is standing still. The interior features blackand anthracite-coloured sections, contrasted by classic GTI red on the stitching and also on the fivepoint safety harnesses. While there are no plans for production, players of GT6 will be able to download the virtual GTI Roadster from mid-June.

Mercedes C-Class top family car Mercedes-Benz has risen up the rankings in an ownership satisfaction survey, seeing it scoop a top family car position with the C-Class. Mercedes-Benz featured prominently in a survey taking in the views of over 15,000 owners of cars registered between January 2011 and December 2012 and covering 27 different car brands. Focusing on a diverse range of attributes, from reliability and quality to comfort, performance and economy, the survey is the most detailed and comprehensive of its kind. Particular praise focused on its efficient and powerful range of engines, the comfort features and its styling. Gary Savage, CEO of Mercedes-Benz UK Limited, said: ‘Winning the family car class is an achievement we’re

proud of – not least because it’s possibly the most demanding segment of them all. “Our customers rightly depend on their Mercedes-Benz and our dealers work hard to exceed expectations and make the ownership experience as enjoyable and reliable as the cars themselves. Likewise, our engineers and designers go to extraordinary lengths to ensure our cars meet the exacting standards of safety, comfort, versatility and quality expected of any Mercedes-Benz relied on to carry families day in, day out.’ Launched in 2007, the 204 series C-Class accounted for over 165,000 registrations in the UK and 2.4 million registrations globally, making it the most popular single model in the Mercedes-Benz range during this time.

Designed by Walter De Silva, head of design at Volkswagen, this one-of-akind supercar was revealed in 2013 to celebrate Lamborghini's 50th anniversary. Now the spectacular Egoista, inspired by the unique design of an Apache helicopter, will go on display to the public permanently at the Lamborghini Museum in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy. In addition to its striking, futuristic design, this symbol of hedonism boasts a 5.2-liter V10 engine with nearly 600 bhp. The active aerodynamic panels in the bodywork deploy automatically when the supercar encounters certain road conditions or reaches certain speeds, and the entire body is made of carbon fibre and aluminum. Rather than traditional side doors, the Egoista has a single canopy door that allows the driver to enter the cockpit. The model has now returned to Lamborghini's headquarters in Italy, where it will go on display in the company's showroom before becoming a permanent part of the Lamborghini Museum.

Nissan's passion for innovation and technology has seen it transform the family car landscape over the course of the last seven years. Now, using the same design approach and original thinking that produced the Qashqai, X-Trail and Note, Nissan brings the all-new family hatchback challenger called the Pulsar. Combining bold design, technical innovations and interior space, the new Pulsar brings a new dimension to the C-segment, offering all the familiar Nissan qualities in a stylish new package. In keeping with Nissan's approach to innovation and reduced costs for owners, the Pulsar's engine allturbocharged engine range delivers the perfect combination of performance and efficiency. The 1.2-litre DIG-T petrol unit punches above its weight with an output of 115PS, while the 1.5-litre dCi generates 110PS and 260Nm of torque. An even more powerful 190PS 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine will join the

range early in 2015. Continuing Nissan's successful downsizing philosophy, the new Pulsar's engines are high on performance and low on emissions, with CO2 outputs below 95g/km. It’s also packed with a range of technologies such as its second-generation NissanConnect system - that comes with a range of innovative features including full smartphone integration, Google® Send-to-Car and access to a wide variety of useful and informative apps. The Pulsar will go on sale in Autumn.

KICK-OFF: The World Cup will begin on Thursday 12th June when hosts Brazil kick off against Croatia, followed by 31 days of non-stop football

World Cup Countdown By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

With less than two weeks to go until the first ball is kicked in Brazil, signalling the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, expectations, hopes and a little bit of optimism are beginning to rise with the British public. The 30 years of hurt originally coined by Baddiel and Skinner may now be more like 48 years, yet the phrase ‘never say never’ is a timeless classic for every England fan. Roy Hodgson’s Lions are at their biggest odds for a number of tournaments and will find it difficult to qualify out of a group which includes Luis Suarez’s Uruguay and the consistently high performers, who only seem to excel on the world stage, Italy. If England were to get out of the group, it would be the simple case of just four wins in a row to claim the illusive trophy – simple right? Of course not. When you are up against some of the world’s best players, in the heat of Brazil,

the task gets that little bit harder and even the most optimistic fan can’t deny that the odds are massively against England. Every World Cup brings with it shocks and surprises, and it is hosts Brazil who this year are being touted as the favourites to lift the prestigious Jules Rimet in July. Current holders Spain, who have won three major championships back-to-back, will be looking to spoil the party and claim an unprecedented two World Cup’s in a row. The world’s biggest names, from Ronaldo to Messi and Ribery to Neymar will all be showcasing their talents and one thing is for sure, football will rule the world for one month solid this summer. Protests against the tournament had threatened to hamper the competition yet, even with some stadium’s looking more like construction sites than playing fields at the moment, it seems the watching world will get what they want come the 12th June. 64 matches, 32 nations, 31 days and one winner…Brazil 2014 is just around the corner and anything can happen.

“Tauqir Zia should be the next chairman of PCB”: Mushtaq Mohammad

Pakistan Cricket has gone through some major upheaval in the recent past with the almost regular change in leadership due to imposition of orders by the courts as well as the Government of Pakistan. With one Chairman being replaced with another and then being asked to leave again, the reputation of Pakistan Cricket has understandably taken a major battering on the domestic and international front. Amongst the many well wishers of Pakistan Cricket, none other can claim to be more passionate than the former captain of Pakistan, Mushtaq Mohammad. The Younger brother of the “Little Master” Hanif Mohammad, Mushtaq made his Test debut in 1959 against the West Indies in Lahore. He was an accomplished righthanded batsman of his time and played 57 Test matches and scored 10 hundreds and 19 fifties. He was also an effective leg break bowler and he took 79 Test wickets including 3 five wicket hauls. Mushtaq played his final Test for Pakistan in Australia in 1979, not before he had captained Pakistan in 19 Test matches from 1976–77 to 1978–79. Amongst his most memorable feats was a gutsy 121 and a bowling performance of eight wickets against West Indies at Port of Spain in 1976–77 to inflict a rare home defeat on the West Indies. He also led Pakistan to a 2–0 win over India when the two countries played their first series against each other in eighteen years in 1978–79. The 70 year old veteran now lives in England but the distance is no bar for Mushtaq to express his surprise and frustration at the events unfolding back home and in exclusive remarks to PakPassion.net, Mushtaq described the situation at PCB as unacceptable, stating “I can safely say that what is happening at the PCB is completely unacceptable. We have Chairmen changing every other day and there is no sense of continuity. There is no method or law which seems to dictate the workings of this organization which is very sad.” With Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf involved in a seemingly endless tussle to remain in power, Mushtaq expressed his bemusement at pronouncements about the introduction of international cricket made by both competitors which were meant to outdo each other in front of the public “Every other day we have one Chairman or the other coming on television and talking about how they can restore international cricket in Pakistan but maybe they should put their own house in order before inviting others to come and visit it!” With no end in sight for a resolution to the puzzle, Mushtaq feels that it’s high time that people on all sides of the divide realized that such changes of power were damaging to Pakistan cricket and the only hope lay in some kind of compromise which allowed one Chairman to stay and effect positive change. Mushtaq added “It might be too late now but the only real way to resolve this issue is to allow whoever is in position to stay there and implement some sensible policies over a period of time. If you keep on pushing people out then how can they ever make a difference or effect change” Mushtaq also played county cricket where he captained Northamptonshire between 1975 and 1977, leading the side to victory in the 1976 Gillette Cup, the county's first-ever trophy, and to second place in the County Championship, equaling its best-ever position. He is well versed with the workings and the governance of the ECB which he regards as an example for the PCB to follow. “In Pakistan we do not seem to have a proper system to appoint a Chairman. He is selected by the Patron in chief. Currently that person is the Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Nawaz Sharif so he brings in Mr. Sethi. During the previous Government’s time, it was Mr. Ashraf. Both of these gentlemen, in my view, are not suitable for the role they were chosen to perform. Here in England, the counties have their Chairmen who perform at the county level and the ECB Chairman is selected amongst them. In Pakistan, we can have a similar system where the regional heads can be eligible to lead the PCB but unfortunately what we have is totally the opposite. No wonder we are in this mess!” The uncertainty at the helm of affairs in the PCB is not only a matter of shame for all stakeholders of Pakistan Cricket, it is also a cause of considerable anxiety amongst the recently chosen coaching staff for Pakistan. Mushtaq feels that the likes of Waqar Younis who was recently selected as Head Coach will be unnecessarily feeling the heat due to no fault of his own, “This must be a tough time for Waqar who in my view is an excellent choice for the role as is Mushtaq Ahmed as spin bowling coach - both of whom have served Pakistan well in the past and will do well. I have heard some criticism about their selection on the basis of their names being mentioned in Justice Qayyum's Report, but to me that is totally irrelevant. The report is based upon a different time period and the players were mentioned and fined so we should move on and accept them as coaches. They have a job to do and let’s give them the space and freedom to perform before getting on their backs as we usually do.” With news reports indicating that the Zaka v Sethi duel is not likely to diminish in intensity in the near future, well-wishers of Pakistan Cricket, like Mushtaq Mohammad, are understandably looking outwards for candidates who could have a calming effect on the present situation. The veteran cricketer clearly feels that Pakistan needs some wise leadership to lead them out of this quagmire “In my view Tauqir Zia and Arif Abbasi have both served Pakistan well in the past and the leadership skills of both of them is what Pakistan needs for stability. Tauqir Zia should be the next Chairman PCB with Arif Abbasi also having a key role in PCB affairs. This needs to be done very soon to lead Pakistan out of this crisis”, he concluded.

Tackling cancer through grassroots sport

FUNDRAISING: SCAR secretary, Shadow Parvez (left), and chairman, Delroy Dacres (right), hope to raise funds for the fight against cancer

SCAR football tournament to be held to raise funds for local charity By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A Bradford-based football tournament will be kicking off later this month as a local charity group aims to raise money in the fight against cancer. SCAR (Sports Campaign Against Racism) will be hosting the event on Tuesday 17th June at the 5 Alive Soccer Centre on York Street, Bradford, with 10 teams competing for the crown of champions. SCAR was launched in 1998 by chairman, Delroy Dacres, and secretary, Shadow Parvez, as an attempt to tackle racism at grassroots level in all sports in West Yorkshire. Delroy explains how this latest initiative will aim to bring people from all ethnic backgrounds together for a truly international tournament. “We have decided to stage the tournament because we want people from all backgrounds to come down and join in,” he said. “We held a World Cup style competition previously whereby

people from all nationalities took part and we could have had over 50 teams that day which was terrific and shows how multi-cultural Bradford is. “It’s very important to promote a diverse community and allow people to play sport together without any abuse or anything like that. SCAR aims to cut out the racism in grass roots football and that message will of course be spread on 17th June.

“I can’t wait to get started,” he said. “We want as many teams as possible to come and participate in this tournament and help raise money for this important cause. “Regal Bakery, are our main sponsor and we thank them for their support. Faisel [Ali] Director of Regal Bakery) has been very supportive; he’s never turned me down and is willing to help with all

“We want as many teams as possible to come and participate in this tournament and help raise money for this important cause. “You play in a tournament to win but basically you have to play hard and fair and there are even trophies for the winners.” The indoor contest is the first of many projects SCAR hopes to launch in the near future. Organisation secretary, Shadow Parvez, says he is excited about the launch of the competition and hopes to raise a lot of money for the charity.

the causes.” To receive an application form, for the 5-aside open age (16+) tournament, please email SCAR, at office@scar-yorkshire.org.uk or phone 01274 494100. Each team will be charged £40 to enter whilst proceeds will go towards the Crocus Cancer Appeal. The tournament kicks off on Tuesday 17th June, with matches starting at 7pm.

Speaking after hearing the news, Aisha said she couldn’t wait to begin and explained how her hobby of cricket quickly turned into a real passion. “I always liked playing cricket in the garden when I was little and so I joined an after school club,” she said. “I really enjoyed it so then I joined Shadwell cricket club the following year and after about two or three years I moved on to Bardsey who I still play for.” For the latest chapter in her cricketing career, Aisha had to undergo two trials qualify for the West Yorkshire team. The first was an indoor nets session before a second contest was setup outside giving prospective squad

Excellent Esa By Ashley Grint

A junior Bradford kickboxer has continued on his rise to the top after picking up his latest accolade last month. Seven-year-old Esa Hussain picked up the green belt, his fourth belt in the sport, after successfully passing the grade with a near-flawless routine. Having to learn and memorise 25 new moves, the young martial arts ace made just one mistake throughout the whole examination to comfortably walk away with his award, safe in the knowledge that hard work does pay off. Esa’s father, Amjad Hussain, says he has noticed that his son has recently begun to mature into a dedicated athlete and he more than deserved his latest belt. “He’s begun putting in double the time now,” Amjad said. “Ever since he turned seven, you just can see it in him that he is becoming more mature and more confident in his own abilities. “The green belt was his hardest one yet and he has been training non-stop for it; mornings before school, after school, before he

goes to bed, all the time just training to get that belt. “Now he’s done it, he is doing the same thing again for the next one. I am always incredibly proud of him and to hear him asking me

“I want to see how far I can go,” he said. “The next belt is the purple one so I am focussed on gaining that one. There are tournaments coming up as well which I really want to win.

“It is hard work but I always enjoy it.” Esa may still be one of the youngest members at his kickboxing club, yet with more training and more tournaments on the horizon, he could soon be on his way to becoming one of the most decorated competitors in the whole squad.

members the chance to take part in a match situation. Aisha, who is a pace bowler, was informed last month that she had been selected for the squad and explained what her busy summer was now likely to entail. She said: “I will be training with the West Yorkshire squad every Saturday and playing matches. And I will be training and playing matches with my club.” Gateways School Headmistress Dr Tracy Johnson praised the student for all her hard work, adding that Aisha certainly deserves all the plaudits that come her way. “We are all very proud of Aisha’s achievement in being selected for the Under-13 West Yorkshire Girls’ cricket team,” she said. “She has put in a lot of work and training to get to this point in a sport she is passionate about and we wish her a successful season.”
