Leeds’ Bangladeshi Community Centre was the scene of a mass brawl last weekend as punches and chairs were thrown during what was supposed to be an ‘Annual General Meeting’. Thirteen people have so far been arrested following the incident on Saturday 30th May as over one-hundred members of the local Bangladeshi community clashed at the Harehills site. The brawl, which also saw police officers attacked, was filmed on mobile phones with footage showing weapons such as machetes, metal pipes and a Stanley knife all being used.

New legal aid reforms will ensure those accused of a crime will cough up the cost of their case and assets frozen

Make criminals pay for their court costs

CHANGE: Legal Aid Minister Shailesh Vara announced that the new law will enable the Legal Aid Agency (LAA) to order the recovery of up to ÂŁ2 million legal aid a year

“Legal aid is taxpayers’ money and it is right we do not spend it on those who can afford to pay their own costs.”

New measures to make criminals, rather than hard working taxpayers, pay more towards their legal bills have come into force, Legal Aid Minister Shailesh Vara announced. The changes are the latest in a package of legal aid reforms which make sure those accused of a crime and are wealthy enough to pay for some, or all, of their legal representation do so. The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) is expected to be able to order recovery of up to £2million legal aid a year on average as a result of today's changes to the Proceeds of Crime Act. Legal aid costs can now be recovered from convicted criminals where their money and assets had been frozen by the courts under this law. Previously legal aid did not qualify for recovery from those assets, and so the only way to force criminals to pay up was through a separate, often unsuccessful, court battle after the criminal trial was finished.

The new law change allows legal aid to be recovered once other compensation and confiscation orders have been made. Legal Aid Minister Shailesh Vara said: “Too often people convicted of crimes have been able to avoid paying what they owe. Legal aid is taxpayers' money and it is right we do not spend it on those who can afford to pay their own costs. These measures will make sure legal aid is repaid, and are another vital step in creating a fair and credible system.” Under the Proceeds of Crime Act those accused have financial assets identified which are then 'restrained' by the court - meaning they cannot be spent or moved by the person who has been charged until their trial is over. If they are convicted these assets can then be used by the court to pay compensation to victims or to make confiscation orders. From 1st June the new regulations will mean any finances left after those payments are made

can now continue to be restrained if the person also still owes unpaid legal aid bills. In appropriate cases the court can now allow the LAA to use these remaining assets to cover any outstanding legal aid costs or contributions. The changes are the latest in a series of moves to make sure the wealthiest who can afford to pay for their own defence costs are not unfairly leaving the taxpayer to pick up the bill. In January 2014 a financial eligibility threshold of £37,500 or more annual disposable household income was introduced for Crown Court cases so that the richest defendants are no longer automatically provided with legal aid up-front at public expense. This would typically be defendants who have at least £3,000 in disposable income, after they have paid key costs like tax, housing and childcare costs and other essential outgoings every month. This means the LAA no longer have to fight to get the money back after their trial.

FILM: Welcome 2 Karachi was released in cinemas worldwide on Friday 29th May

Security guard turns actor for Bollywood hit By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A film fanatic grandfather from Bradford, who has featured in everything from Pakistani movies to ITV’s DCI Banks, says his latest appearance on the big screen is one of his ‘proudest yet’. Over the past 40 years, 63-yearold Mehmood Sultan has been pursuing his love of acting, taking on small and large roles, in the UK and Pakistan. Last year he was cast to play a part in the latest Indian actioncomedy, ‘Welcome 2 Karachi’, and upon its release in cinemas around the world last Friday, he says he couldn’t wait to see the final production. “I have just always loved acting,” he said. “I do not act for the money, I do it because it is something that I am very passionate about. “When the Welcome 2 Karachi opportunity came about I was invited down to London by the director and spent the night there before filming my scene. “I play a Pakistani man and it was really good fun to do. I was amazed by how the film’s team were able to make London, Bradford, Birmingham and Wales all look like Karachi.” For five years between 1990 and 1994, Mr Sultan lived in Karachi, Lahore, where he experienced a

successful career in the Lollywood film industry. Returning to the UK, he settled down in Bradford and despite continuing to carry out acting roles, he now works full time as a security guard in the city. His latest opportunity came about earlier this year when he was invited to feature in another Pakistani film and will be flying out to Thailand next month for filming. “Whenever I am offered an acting role or my agent gets in touch with me, I always want to do it,” he added. “The opportunity in Thailand is very exciting and I cannot wait to

go over there.” ‘Welcome 2 Karachi’ features the pairing of Arshad Warsi and Jacky Bhagnani as two lost Indians, stuck in the dangerous city of Karachi. With political turmoil rife in the city, the duo have to fend for themselves with no money, no passports, no means of communication, and perhaps most importantly, no way of getting home. The film is now showing in cinemas across the country with scenes notably shot locally in the Bradford Bazaar, Little Germany and Lister Mills.

Wembley ‘dream come true’

HS2 making tracks in Leeds

Following a meeting at Leeds’ Civic Hall, between Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, and the Chairman of HS2 Ltd, Sir David Higgins, Deputy Leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor James Lewis, has praised the ongoing commitment to developing trade links. “We were delighted to welcome the Secretary of State for Transport as well as Sir David Higgins and the chairs of the northern combined authorities to Leeds today and it was very welcome to hear of the commitment to tackling the historic lack of transformational investment in transport infrastructure in the north as a priority,” he said. "High-speed rail in the forms of HS2 and HS3 hold the key to unlocking the vast economic potential of the north, together with further significant investment in a fully-integrated modern transport network and the resources and local decision-making powers to help directly benefit millions of people, businesses and communities.”

Kirkgate restorations

A project to protect and preserve a key part of Leeds's heritage is set to begin thanks to a major funding package, financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Leeds City Council. A grant of £110,000 will be used to repair 92 Kirkgate as part of the Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI), with work set to begin on site soon. This is one of a number of historic buildings that have been part of the Kirkgate landscape since the 18th Century and which form part of the THI project. Work on 92 Kirkgate will include repointing in lime mortar, re-roofing with stone slate, installation of sash windows and reinstatement of a traditional shop front. The specialist work will not only restore the architecture, but will be in keeping with the nature of the building and the aesthetic of the area as a whole.

PITCHSIDE: As part of a 64-piece football league choir, Anwar sung ‘Abide with me’ on the Wembley pitch prior to the FA Cup final kick off

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Bradford City may have just missed out on their chance to grace the hallowed Wembley pitch this season yet one Bantams fan got to live the dream on Saturday as he stepped out in front of a packed stadium. Anwar Musa, from Laisterdyke, has been a City supporter ever since he moved to England in 1968, and is a dedicated season ticket holder come rain or snow. Usually straining his vocal chords on the terraces every Saturday, the 52-year-old swapped the stands for the pitch last weekend as he was selected to represent his beloved Bradford in this year’s Football League fans choir. Alongside one fan from each of the 64 league clubs that reached the third round of this season’s FA Cup, Anwar performed the traditional ‘Abide with me’ hymn ahead of kick off before watching Arsenal take on Aston Villa in England’s most prestigious cup competition. Spending two days preparing and rehearsing for the event

before the big day finally arrived, the superfan says it surpassed all his expectations. “It was absolutely brilliant,” he said. “To walk out in front of 90,000 people was like coming out as a gladiator, the wall of sound was incredible. “I have been in the crowd three times before but to experience walking out on that pitch is something I will never forget. “Singing abide with me, alongside the choir and the fans, was amazing and I was quite emotional to think I was representing Bradford City especially during this anniversary year.” 30 years ago, 52 City fans were killed in the Valley Parade stadium fire, a game which Anwar attended and narrowly escaped the flames in the Main Stand. “All the other members of the choir understood the significance of the anniversary and were extremely supportive throughout the weekend,” he added. Prior to stepping out onto the pitch for the first time, the choir were even given a quick motivational talk by a surprise

Bloodied scenes as Bangladeshi community clash INJURIES: Six people were reported to be injured following the conflict, with one man needing nine stitches to the top of his head

Cover story continued Disputes are believed to have broken out over the running of the community centre and an upcoming election which two rival factions believe they should be in charge of following the alleged suspension of directors. Last weekend, an AGM had been arranged by one group of supporters and when a group of 20-25 members from the opposing party entered the building, a brawl pursued. Abdul Kashem is one of the candidates hoping to be elected as a director at the centre and was one of the men who entered the AGM to voice their concerns over the meeting. “We had been given assurances by the police, who were inside the building at the time, that it was safe to enter,” he said. “The plan was to voice our concerns over financial irregularities and the centre’s mismanagement. “However, when we got inside we were attacked with weapons which we believe had been passed inside by people who were waiting for us. “People were fearing for

their lives.” Mr Kashem suffered minor injuries whilst his brother received a deep cut to the top of his head which required nine stitches. Director at the centre, Abul Abedin, also suffered injuries to his head after entering the building and says the blame lies with his local councillor who failed to prevent the AGM from going ahead. “We pleaded with the council to close the meeting down before it even begun because we knew the threat of it,” he said. “This was not heard and therefore there is blood on their hands. All of this could have been avoided.” Councillor Arif Hussain, who represents the Harehills area for Leeds City Council, was singled out by Mr Abedin as at fault due to his affiliation with the centre. A protest was held outside Leeds Civic Hall on Monday 1st June calling for the resignation of Mr Hussain from the council. Speaking to the Asian Express, Mr Hussain said he was due to meet with police officers on Monday for a full briefing on the events that

transpired before he could comment further. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi Centre Chair, Mohammed Afzal Hossain, said the councillor had been targeted for other people’s ‘personal self interest’ and thanked him for his continued support. A press statement issued on Wednesday 3rd June added: “The scheduled election of BCL Directors today unfortunately was postponed following the request made by James Rodgers, Asst Chief Executive officer of Leeds City Council and Chris Bowman, Chief Inspector of Leeds District Police, on the grounds of safety and security.” It added: “We are keen to ensure the next re-scheduled election will be held in a fair and peaceful manner.” As investigations into the brawl continue, officers have appealed for any persons with information or footage from the event to come forward in aid of the investigation. Neighbourhoods Chief Inspector Chris Bowen of Leeds District Police said: “There is a lot of personal footage online, as well as the attending officer’s body-worn camera footage that is continuing to be reviewed. “I would appeal for anyone that has personal footage of the incident to bring it forward to assist us with our investigation. I would also urge anyone with information about the incident to contact police. “We do expect there to be a number of further arrests over the coming weeks.” Elections for the Bangladeshi Community Centre are now expected to commence before the 31st July deadline in order to comply with the centre’s ‘Articles of Memorandum’.

Letting agent’s reminder

Letting agents across West Yorkshire are being reminded to register with an approved complaints scheme. Since 1st October 2014, letting agents and property managers must join one of three Governmentapproved ‘redress’ schemes. The legal requirement means that tenants and landlords dealing with letting agents, and leaseholders and freeholders dealing with property managers, will have an independent person to complain to if they receive a service that falls below standards. This will make it easier for tenants and landlords to report bad service and prevent disputes escalating. Registration to the redress scheme is enforced by the council’s housing regulation team who can fine unregistered letting agents and property managers up to £5,000.

Hefty fine for rogue landlord

A landlord and his property manager are counting the cost of letting an unsafe house to vulnerable tenants, following a successful prosecution by Leeds City Council. Property owner Mr Petar Mijakovac and his mother and property manager, Mrs Kosovka Mijakovac of Falkland Rise, Moortown, Leeds were prosecuted for breaching nine 'House in Multiple Occupation' management regulations. The pair were fined a total of £9,500 for the breaches at a property on Hilton Road in Chapeltown. The property, which had been split into flats and housed some vulnerable tenants, including children, came to the attention of Leeds City Council following a complaint from a tenant about living conditions.

100 mile cycle, 26 mile run, 10 mountainous climbs, one determined fundraiser Bradford man to ‘push his limits’ in aid of Nepal earthquake victims CYCLE: As part of his trio of fundraisers, Kamlesh will complete the 100 mile Prudential cycle challenge from London to Surrey

Car park closure

Hallfield Lane car park in Wetherby town centre will be closed for the foreseeable future to allow a major refurbishment project to be carried out. The site owned by Leeds City Council closed on Sunday 31st May, with improvement works to follow to create a modern car park which will accommodate 153 vehicles, including short-stay parking and retaining permit-only spaces for local residents. The refurbishment is expected to take approximately 16 weeks to complete, and is being carried out by the council with substantial funding support from Morrisons as part of the planned future extension of their nearby Horsefair Centre store.

PLANS: Kamlesh will begin his charity efforts with an exhausting Ten Peak challenge in the Lake District

After climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for charity almost a decade ago, a long time fundraiser from Bradford says he could yet face his steepest mission this year, as he takes on three exhausting challenges. Kamlesh Patel, 54, will not be completing the usual Three Peaks challenge next month, but will instead take on ten mountainous climbs over a gruelling day of trekking in the Lake District. Determined to do even more, the St James’ Hospital employee will then complete a 100 mile cycling challenge in August, before rounding off his trio of challenges with the world renowned, Great North Run in September. Raising funds for the relief efforts of the Nepal earthquake, Kamlesh says it will be his toughest fundraiser yet, adding that some of the challenges will be a new experience for him. “I have completed marathons in New York and London before, but

this will be something completely new for me,” he said. “Hopefully I won’t be too tired by the time of the run and I have been in training for the Ten Peaks over recent weeks. “It is the 100 mile cycle which I think is going to be the toughest as I have never done such a distance before on a bike. “I only get nine hours to finish the route or I am disqualified so there is extra pressure on that section of the challenges.” Earlier this year in April, Nepal was struck by a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake, killing over 8,000 people and leaving tens of thousands more injured. The following month, a second quake struck the south Asian nation, resulting in a further 200 deaths and causing more structural damage to homes and buildings across the country. After previously raising thousands of pounds for local causes, such as the Bradford Royal

three challenges and pushing myself harder than I ever have, we can raise a fantastic sum of money.” He added: “After my last marathon, my wife asked me if that was going to be it because I have been fundraising since 1985 now. “I guess I just can’t stop pushing myself and testing my limits for these amazing causes.”

Father researched ‘executions’ before killing family

TRAGIC: Jitendra Lad killed his wife and two daughters in their family home last October

Verdict of suicide and unlawful killings after Bradford tragedy A Bradford man, who killed his wife and two daughters before hanging himself last year, searched the web for ‘how to cut someone's throat and executions’ an inquest has heard. 49-year-old Jitendra Lad, from Clayton, killed his wife, Daksha, 44, and his teen daughters Trisha, 19 and Nisha, 16, in their family home in October 2014. Their bodies were discovered by a neighbour on Monday 27th October, in what coroner, Martin Fleming, described as an ‘unimaginable scene of horror’. Mr Lad was found hanged in the other Blackberry Way property, whilst the three family members were all found with stab wounds in their beds where they died on 25th October an inquest heard. The father-of-two used a scuba

diving knife to inflict 33 wounds to his eldest daughter, Trisha, indicating signs of a struggle between the two, whilst Nisha had eight different wounds. Their mother, Daksha, suffered four deep stab wounds which severed arteries in her neck and her chest. In a statement read to Bradford Coroner's Court, Mr Lad's brother Raman said: “There was nothing about the family that was anything other than normal and close. “I can think of no reason at all for what's happened. They were just a normal and happy family.” However, Det Sgt Duncan Jackson told the Bradford hearing that Mr Lad had researched ‘depression’ days before the tragedy and how to carry out ‘executions’. The officer added that Mr Lad had been stressed with work since being

promoted and even told a woman during a holiday last year that he was unhappy with his life and dreaded turning 50. Senior investigating officer (SIO) Detective Superintendent Simon Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police said after the inquests: “Whilst today we have heard the coroner's verdicts as to how the four members of the Lad family died, the grieving process and loss for the extended family will stay with them for many years to come. They will be missed by a great many people. “The family through myself as the SIO would now wish to be left in peace to come to terms with their tragic loss and grief and will not be answering any questions.” Meanwhile, Mr Fleming, upon recording a verdict of suicide on Mr Lad and unlawful killing on the other members of his family, said: “We will never know for sure what was going through Jitendra's mind at that time.”

A Bradford man who could hardly walk a year ago has shed ten stone and turned his life around thanks to Bradford Council staff at Eccleshill Pool. Chris Nelson, 45, of Undercliffe, suffered lifelong back pain from childhood and eventually had spinal surgery and disc replacements. He was forced to give up his job as a lorry driver, was on 45 tablets a day and only moved between his bed and a wheelchair. But in March last year his GP referred him to an exercise on prescription programme at Eccleshill Pool and he has never looked back. Sixteen months on, Chris now swims twice a week and does cardiovascular and weight training at the gym five times a week.

More acts coming to Bingley

Scottish alternative rock band ‘Idlewild’ are the final big name act to be added to the Bingley Music Live bill. Idlewild, who formed in Edinburgh in 1995, released their eighth studio album 'Everything Ever Written' in February. It has been described as the band's 'most eclectic output to date' with strands of Scottish folk, Americana and 'Hebridean psychedelia'. They remerged in October 2014 after a five year hiatus with a new line up and an acoustic tour of the Scottish Highlands and islands. Also joining Bradford Council-run festival, set to run between 4th and 6th September, in Bingley's Myrtle Park are Radio 1 stars Huw Stephens, Scott Mills and Chris Stark, as well as Propaganda DJs. They will be providing change-over DJ sets between acts over the weekend. For tickets, regular updates and the full 2015 line up, visit www.bingleymusiclive.com.

Tidying Todmorden

Two derelict sites in Todmorden are set to be cleared after joint action taken by Calderdale Council and the Todmorden Development Board. Land on Halifax Road, next to Todmorden Health Centre, and the old Abraham Ormerod building on Burnley Road, have become unsightly and overgrown after years of neglect. Despite requests to the owner of the Halifax Road site the land has not been cleared and the Council has now served a Section 215 Notice to the landlord. This legal power allows the Council to force landowners to clear land which has become so untidy that it is damaging the appearance of the local area. The owners of the site have agreed to install and repair fencing around the boundaries of the land in June.

Remember, remember the 5th November has a new meaning this year for Bradford’s residents as the eagerly awaited opening of The Broadway development finally arrives on Bonfire Night. The milestone project in the city will be the largest UK retail centre to launch in 2015 and is anticipated to increase retail spend in the city by up to 78 per cent. A footfall increase of around 32million people has been projected alongside £1bn in expenditure across the city’s stores. Commenting on the progress, Duncan Bower, Director of Development at Westfield Corporation, said: “After years of hard work and crucial support from many sectors of the Bradford community, I am very pleased to announce an opening date for The Broadway of Thursday 5th November 2015.” Significant developments have been made in recent months with the centre’s two largest stores handed over to anchors Marks & Spencer and Debenhams for their respective interior fit outs. The two retail giants, who were the first to sign up to the revised scheme, will occupy state of the art units within the 570,000 sq ft development, and will help towards the city’s regeneration programme. Andrew Crooks, Head of Region for Yorkshire at Marks & Spencer, said: “It’s great to see the development nearing completion and we are looking forward to welcoming customers to the new store in The Broadway. “The store will create a fantastic new shopping experience and we hope that customers will join us on the opening day to see all of the new and exciting features that we will be bringing to the city.” The Broadway is now over 70 per cent leased with many of the

Bradford Council Leader, Cllr David Green, said it is exciting times for the city and he was looking forward to seeing the centre bring a new concept to the city. “It's great news to get the official opening date for The Broadway Bradford which has been eagerly anticipated by people across the region,” he said. “We have been really pleased to see the progress of this development and it is right on schedule. The timing is perfect for all those wanting to come to Bradford to do their Christmas shopping. “We will have so much to offer throughout the city centre with a great mix of major department stores, smaller and more unique shops, and thriving pubs, cafes and restaurants, all adding up to a great reason to come here.”

His animation, named ‘Design and Society: more than meets the eye’, came out on top in the Moving Pictures category and the Oldhamborn designer says his interest in social issues is what made the competition appeal to him. “I had a choice of two briefs: curiosity or design and society and I chose the latter,” he said. “The concept of my animation is that design is about more than just looking good, it can also tackle social issues. I chose to address slavery and child labour in third world countries.” The judging panel had over 70 animations to choose from and Ziaul’s was one of eight to reach the final shortlist.

He describes his winning entry as his ‘against the odds’ award which involved him rising to the challenge of meeting deadlines and facing a panel of seven at the RSA interview. He continued: “I was really surprised to receive the email from the RSA congratulating me on winning this award and I’m looking forward to the award ceremony where I’ll also have the opportunity

Dinner with a Prince A leading businessman from Bradford was invited to dine with royalty last week as he and his son attended a special event at Buckingham Palace. Nirmal Singh MBE and Simmy Sekhon were two of the selected guests who attended a meeting with the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, inside the grounds of Britain’s most famous home. Organised to inform prominent members of the Sikh community about the country’s pledge to give regions across the country their own power, and to promote charitable causes, it was a ‘day to remember’ according to the two Bradford businessmen. “I have only visited the palace in the grounds before at the Her Majesty's Garden Party,” Mr Sekhon said, “but to visit the Palace from within and share a glass of bubbly with the Queen’s son is an honour and an unforgettable moment. “I hope that it will be the first of many.” Mr Singh added that he was intrigued to hear the Prince’s thoughts on the future of powersharing across the country and commitment to driving business in ‘the north’. He said: “The Prince believes in giving the regions local power because they have the solution for national challenges. “He said he supports the north and recognised the region for its work through the annual awards which he would only miss in the event of bad weather or state funerals of other nations.” The Duke closed his speech to the whole room, adding that he wanted to see a return of the Sikh Regiment in the Armed Forces, after the invaluable contribution of Sikhs in Britain’s First and Second World War efforts. Mr Singh and Mr Sekhon have now both pledged their financial support to the Prince’s charitable initiatives for the next three years.

Arrest made over Beeston rape and attempted murder IMAGES: CCTV footage captured the suspect moments after the attempted murder and rape in Beeston, Leeds

Slovakian national in custody three months after attack

Following an international investigation, a man has been arrested in Slovakia in connection with the attempted murder and rape of a woman in Leeds. A 21-year-old Slovakian national was arrested by local police in the Kosice area of eastern Slovakia on Thursday 4th June after West Yorkshire detectives secured a European Arrest Warrant. Officers investigating the attack of the 18-year-old woman in Beeston on 6th March this year, had been appealing for people with any information to come forward, with the crime reconstructed on BBC’s Crimewatch earlier this year. The arrested man was identified as a suspect as a result of international enquiries by officers from West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team. Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen, who is leading the investigation, said: “The European Arrest Warrant process requires that police forces are in a position to

charge any suspect they are seeking. “To that end we consulted the Crown Prosecution Service before applying to a district judge at Leeds Magistrates Court for the European Arrest Warrant. “Once the warrant was granted, we liaised with the Slovakian police through the National Crime Agency to secure the arrest of this man. We are very grateful to the Slovakian authorities for their assistance. “The man is currently in custody in Slovakia and we will now be pursuing the legal process with the aim of getting him extradited back to the United APPEAL: Police arrested a Kingdom to 21-year-old Slovakian man last be charged week after numerous appeals to appear at court.”

Nazim adds that the situation for refugees has on his latest aid mission as he travels to the border towns of Syria and Turkey to help displaced only got worse since his last visit and explained where the aid would be targeted this year. refugees. “The crisis which began almost five years ago 27-year-old Nazim Ali will be working with nationals in the towns of Reyhanli and Killis, as he shows no sign of abating, if anything it is still getting joins a group of 13 others bringing humanitarian aid worse,” he said. “Refugee Camps are overcrowded with many to those most in need. Millions of Syrian refugees have fled the war-torn outside these camps not getting any support from country over the past three years with over any aid agencies. “‘The SKT Welfare Team will be targeting those 1.7million seeking refuge in Turkey. I will be paying for my own plane ticket such is my commitment to the cause. “I clearly remember visiting countless families last time, living in cave like premises, partially built homes with no doors or windows, in disused factories with electrical wiring everywhere, even families living in an office. “There were horrifying accounts of the killing of the parents with many children witnessing the gruesome murders and looking visibly traumatised. HELPING: Nazim says the smiles he saw on children’s faces “The smile on the face of last year motivated him to complete the trip again this year each child when we delivered the aid is the very reason I have been inspired once more to The team will be visiting the towns just prior to make the visit so that I can try to make my little Ramadan in hope of bringing ‘vital supplies’ to difference.” As mentioned, it is the second time in less than families struggling to find basics such as water. “Just as many of us will be fasting in Ramadan, so nine months that Nazim has visited the two towns, having taken part in a similar aid mission over a two will they,” Nazim continued. “The only difference is that we will be doing week period in October last year alongside W Ramadan in our homes with our loved ones and in Childcare’s Team Syria. After helping to raise almost £20,000 through the presence of an abundance of food. “They however will be struggling to afford basic donations last year, the local volunteer helped deliver and distribute food parcels and winter packs items such as dates and water. A donation of £35 will to hundreds of refugees as well as toys and sweets provide a family of five with a food parcel to help get them through Ramadan.” for children. Nazim has so far raised more than £2,000 for the This time around, he will be travelling alongside the SKT Welfare Team – a UK registered charity food distribution initiative with all funds going which works in some of the poorest communities directly towards the project.

Woman of Achievement A survivor of honour-based abuse has been crowned this year’s ‘Yorkshire’s Woman of Achievement’ saying she hopes to lead by example for other disabled members of the Asian community. Saliha Rashid, from Leeds, picked up both the ‘Young Achiever’ and overall ‘Woman of Achievement’ title earlier this month at the annual Sue Ryder Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards. Registered blind since birth, Saliha comes from a community which operates an honour system and as a result saw her life controlled by her family, with everything from books she read to phone calls and friends she made out of her control. The 22-year-old left her home at the start of her second year at University and has since been giving a voice to other victims and survivors of honour-based abuse by campaigning for the rights of Asian women. The Leeds Trinity Student says she was surprised when she received her nomination for the Young Achievers award and is still in ‘disbelief’ following the awards ceremony. “It still hasn’t sunk in,” she said. “The work I do is something that has to be done so to win the award was so overwhelming and emotional. “I never expected to receive the Young Achiever award let alone Woman of the Year. There were so many deserving women.”

Saliha paid tribute to her friends and lecturers for their help in achieving the award adding it was the people who said she ‘would never amount to anything’ that she most wanted to thank. “They were the ones who motivated me to keep going, to prove the point that disability and gender is not something which has to set anyone back,” she said. “I hope my success in this awards ceremony shows other disabled members of the Asian community that you can overcome anything and allows us to tackle taboo subjects.” Carol Green, Volunteering Co-ordinator at Leeds Trinity University, nominated Saliha for the awards and also attended the ceremony at the Royal Armouries to see her pick up the accolades. She explained why the former Psychology student was deserved of her awards. “I was so proud of her when she got up and spoke of her determination to continue to speak up against gender discrimination, and campaign for the rights of Asian women,” she said. “It was a pleasure to have nominated her for the award. “Saliha was an enthusiastic volunteer whilst at Leeds Trinity. Our volunteering programme gives all students the opportunity to volunteer during their degree, which can add hugely to their CVs.”

Srebrenica flag set to fly in Bradford The sky is the limit quite literally for Bradford City Council’s commemorations of Srebrenica Memorial Week this year as the West Yorkshire authority fly the flag for genocide victims next month. In what was the worst atrocity on European soil since the Second World War, 8,000 Bosnian Muslims – mostly men and boys, were killed in July 1995 during the Bosnian War. A specially tailored flag, which bears the iconic Srebrenica flower and the words ‘Remember Srebrenica’ has been donated to Bradford Council from a Welsh flag maker for the week of remembrance commencing Sunday 5th July. Swansea-based Charles Ashburner designed and manufactured the flag to mark the 20th year of the genocide which Windhill and Wrose councillor, Alex Ross-Shaw, called a ‘magnificent’ tribute. He said: “I am delighted that Charles has generously donated this magnificent flag, which will look fantastic flying high in the heart of our city during Srebrenica Memorial Week. “It will help to remind the people of Bradford about the atrocity 20 years ago.”

Working with Remembering Srebrenica – the UK charitable initiative which organises events across the country to keep alive the story of Srebrenica – councillors and community leaders from across West Yorkshire are planning a memorial event at the City Hall on Saturday 4th July. Remembering Srebrenica Chairman, Dr Waqar Azmi OBE, said: “This year is the 20th anniversary of the genocide that occurred in Srebrenica - the single greatest atrocity committed on European soil since the Second World War and a brutal reminder of man's inhumanity to man. “Mr Ashburner’s generous gift to the city will help to raise awareness of Srebrenica among people in West Yorkshire. “Our volunteers are working hard to inspire people to tackle hatred, build stronger, more cohesive communities and ensure Srebrenica is never forgotten.” Remembering Srebrenica raises awareness of the genocide in the UK. It organises the UK Srebrenica Memorial Week, which leads up to the EU-wide day of remembrance for the victims of the genocide, Srebrenica Memorial Day, on 11th July.

Ebola threat in the post TARGETTED: George Galloway was sent a parcel last week which purportedly contained a handkerchief infected with Ebola

It has been a busy few weeks for the former Bradford West MP George Galloway. After losing his seat in office at the start of the month, the Respect Party leader has since been referred to the police over a complaint regarding his parliamentary expenses and now finds himself at the centre of the news once again after being targeted by what he describes as ‘wannabe terrorists’. On Friday 22nd May, a package was received by staff at Mr Galloway’s Bradford offices, on Grattan Road, which claimed to be ‘infected with Ebola’. Staff in the offices had to be quarantined as tests were carried out on a handkerchief which had been found inside the parcel and despite Mr Galloway not being in the office when the parcel arrived, he wrote on Twitter about the situation. “Entirely unconnected to my last tweet; I’ve just been delivered a handkerchief in the post which is said to be infected with Ebola,” the 60year-old who was in Scotland at the time said. Just under two hours later he confirmed the threat had been extinguished, calling on action to be taken against the ‘wannabe terrorists’. “Respect to my staff who suffered a traumatic few hours today,” he

added. “The biology will surely lead [West Yorkshire Police] to the wannabe terrorists #DNA.” West Yorkshire Police confirmed they attended a property at the address where they established the ‘hazardous substance’ did not pose any risk. Chief Inspector Sarah Baker said: “Expert advice has been sought in relation to the substance allegedly contained in the package and it has been established that it would not pose any risk to public safety. “The letter will be seized by officers and further inquiries made.”

A small step towards a Million

More meals pledged in support of charity scheme To raise one million meals in the space of two months may seem impossible to some, yet for business owners across Yorkshire, it is all about turning this ‘impossible’ vision into a ‘possible’ reality. As part of Charity Right’s ‘Million Meals’ campaign, companies are being called on to pledge their support in raising enough funds to purchase meals for children in some of the most impover-ished areas in the world. Earlier this month, EnKahnz and Shak’s Specialist Cars were the first to sign up to the scheme and now two more businesses have joined the project. Regal Bakeries have pledged to cover the costs of a further 40,000 meals whilst National Gas and Power, will also be supporting the initiative with 5,000 meals covered. The ‘one million’ number may seem daunting at first yet according

to Regal Bakery’s operations director, Jamil Choudhry, it is an ‘achievable figure’ if businesses simply sign up. “Working in the food industry we related to this project on a number of levels and speaking on a humanitarian level, so should every person out there,” he said. “To think how privileged we SIGN UP: More businesses are now are in the UK, and what little being urged to join the Million Meals these children have, is a great campaign following the two latest pledges injustice and therefore we are (l-r) National Gas and Power founder, Majid supporting this project through Shahzad; Regal Bakery’s, Faisal Ali and Ramadan - a time of reflection Jamil Choudhry; alongside Charity Right representative, Imran Hussain for Muslims around the world.” As part of Charity Right’s work in third world countries, they suppliers, says no child should be aim to provide regular meals to simply forgotten and urged other vulnerable families and young businesses to join the campaign. “A key part of our business ethos school children in areas other is helping the local community, charities may not. ALL GONE: Jazz Kaur had her precious hair shaved last week to help vulnerable children in Nepal

Hair cut for charity raises funds for tragedy-hit children

All shaved off A dedicated fundraiser from Armley has had her head shaved for charity as she hopes to raise money for victims of the Nepal earthquakes. 24-year-old trainee solicitor, Jazz Kaur, parted ways with her luscious locks on Thursday 28th May, after opting to take part in the mentally challenging fundraiser after seeing ‘shocking images from overseas’. Over 8,000 people lost their lives following the 8.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal in late April,

have been raising funds for the victims with Jazz adding her name to the list of those offering support. Having her hair shaved by long time friend and barber, Emma Mack, at Woodland Barbers, Swillington, Jazz says despite the initial shock of her ‘new look’, it was worth it for the cause. “I made the decision to shave my head because I wanted to raise awareness of these kids in Nepal who have been affected in such a terrible way following the two earthquakes,” she said. “Their struggle is beyond pain and it is therefore up to us to hold tight and work together to make sure there is help on hand for the victims. “This head shave is for the ones who are in pain and unable to ask for help, to show we haven't forgotten about them. It is not just for children in Nepal but for children who are struggling all over, and hopefully we can show them that there is a brighter day ahead.” She added: “I will be donating my hair to charity now and just want to thank everybody who's helped. You have all done more than you realise so thanks and stay blessed.” Jazz’s hair will now be donated to the Little Princess Trust – a charity which provides realhair wigs to children across the UK who have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment. whilst dozens more were killed following a second quake just weeks later. Thousands of men, women and children have been injured by the disaster whilst millions were affected. As aid missions continue in the country, it is charity champions across the world who

Summer Solstice Festival returns One night of Indian classical music

MUSICIAN: Internationally renowned flute player, Rakesh Chaurasia, will close this year’s Summer Solstice festival

The fourth annual SAA-uk Summer Solstice festival returns to Leeds later this month for one unique ‘allnight’ performance from critically acclaimed Indian artists. Organised to celebrate the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year, the event will run from 8.30pm on Saturday 20th June until 6am the following day, at Leeds’ Left Bank church building. As the UK’s only Indian solstice event, performers from around the world will fly into Leeds to take part including international flute player and composer, Rakesh Chaurasia. Rakesh has achieved numerous awards and

accolades from around the world, including the Indian Music Academy Award in 2007. He has regularly played at prominent festivals such as the WOMAD festival in Athens and the ‘Festivals of India’ in Russia, whilst his prominence as an independent artist was highlighted when he closed the BBC’s live 24 hour recording to mark HRH The Queen’s Silver Jubilee. The inspiration behind the annual festival comes from Keranjeet Kaur Virdee, Chief Executive of the arts charity, SAA-uk, and she explained how excited she was to be delivering another ‘mind blowing experience’. “We truly believe that the event is a magical and captivating night and we’re delighted to be welcoming international musicians to Leeds,” she said. “Indian classical music relies on a system of ragas and melodic modes; each sound has its own unique personality, which can be mesmerising to the listener. “We know that our concert is a firm favourite amongst those who practice and appreciate the art form, but we also want to welcome those who are unfamiliar with Indian music to

come along and experience the magical sounds on offer. “It’s a real honour that Rakesh Chaaurasia is part of our line up this year and we’re confident that the audience will have a mind blowing experience.” Showcasing the best Indian talent from around the world, the evening’s entertainment will begin with one of the UK’s finest young violinists of Carnatic music Dr. Achuthan Sripathmanathan and his fellow musicians. Returning to Leeds for the second time will be Deepa Nair, who will captivate the audience with her soul searching voice before Pandit Sanju Sahai takes on the midnight hour with his finesse and dexterity through the language of Tabla. Mehboob Nadeem will play sitar in the very early hours of the morning, followed by the call for dawn by the amazing flute of Rakesh Chaurasia and formidable tabla of Bhupinder Singh Chaggar. Free Indian Chai and coffee will be available all night and audience attendees will be able to feast on homemade snacks and a meal for only £3.50, with all profits going back into SAA-uk’s young performer’s fund. he Court of Appeal has criticised a district judge for failing to give any adequate reasons for his ruling in an adverse possession claim. In doing so, and by a unanimous verdict, the Court of Appeal allowed the defendant’s appeal and ordered a retrial. Using well established principles, the Court of Appeal examined the way the district judge had concluded his findings of fact at the trial and found that in essence he had blindly accepted the claimant’s evidence whilst simultaneously blindly ignoring the defendant’s. Even more concerning was the fact he had failed to give any reason as to why he had done so. Usually the Court of Appeal will not consider an appeal relating to a trial judge’s factual findings and it will only do so where it is clear that either there was no evidence to support those findings; that the judge misunderstood the evidence before him; or that the judge made findings which no reasonable judge in the circumstances could have made. The Court of Appeal judges reiterated the importance of the trial procedure given that the role of a trial judge is to properly evaluate and test the evidence put before them, before reaching a balanced conclusion which is then clearly set out for the parties to review in a written judgment. In the recent case of Weymont and Weymont –v- Place which came before the Court of Appeal the Judges found that the trial judge had: • Failed to explain why he had decided that certain factual evidence carried no

weight and discounted the defendant's evidence for no good reason: • Not clarified the matters in dispute or referred to the relevant law; and • Accepted certain evidence uncritically without addressing its inconsistencies Going further, Lord Justice Patten stated: "...there is not one sentence in which he makes any specific findings of fact or gives the reasons for doing so”. The issue concerned a Mr and Mrs Weymont who had sought damages in the tort of trespass and an injunction in respect of the use of some parcels of land surrounding a farm house owned by Mr Place. Mr Place had contended that the land came within his registered title, or, in the alternative that both he and his father had acquired the title by adverse possession. However, finding against Mr Place, the trial judge dismissed both Mr Place’s witness and expert evidence without giving a reason for doing so. The Court of Appeal confirmed that a trial judge’s role in testing the factual evidence at trial should include “making a reference to the issues in the case, the legal principles or tests which have to be applied and to why, in cases of conflicting factual evidence, the judge came to accept the evidence of particular witnesses in preference to that of others.” Further, he stated that the importance of the trial judge reaching a “balanced and objective” conclusion was imperative to the trial process. AMA Clinic The medical weight loss specialists Do you find it hard to lose weight due to chronic illness? Have you a medical condition which prevents you exercising and therefore struggle to keep your weight down? Well, there is no longer any need to suffer as innovative, effective and perhaps most importantly safe medical weight loss treatment is now available in Bradford. AMA Clinic, on Barkerend Road, was set up just under two years ago by doctors Akram Khan and Javed Rehman, and is led by a team of doctors with medical registration and several years of hospital and General Practice experience. Their pioneering medical weight loss treatment has already helped dozens of people

across West Yorkshire and now it is your chance to hear how the clinic can help you. Explaining how the course of treatment works, Dr Rehman said: “Following a full medical review, a dietician and a doctor designs a bespoke program in which you can expect to safely lose up to two kilograms a week without initially having to exercise. “Once the weight starts to come off and you are able to do more, we advise you on how to continue to maintain a healthy weight to fit in with your lifestyle and medical history. “We continue the program until you are confident to maintain a healthy lifestyle. After successfully completing the program we continue to maintain contact without charge for as long

as you require.” Once the weight starts ‘falling off’ you can also be rest assured that excess skin tissue that is often seen with other weight loss treatments is minimised with the latest Endermologie machine available on site. Imported all the way from Paris, where it is used in many private medical clinics, government and university hospitals, the equipment provides a specially tailored mechanical massage which gently pulls, stretches and rolls the skin tissue, firming and toning it in the process. This Endermologie Lipo-massage allows your skin to remain tight, toned and rejuvenated giving you the chance to achieve that final result you have been aiming for. Such treatments have become popular amongst A-list Hollywood stars, and at the Cannes Film Festival, the endermologie stall is usually one of the busiest. Dr Rehman added: “Perhaps most importantly, treatments at AMA Clinic are carried out only if it is going to be safe with regard to your medical history. Before any of our treatments are undertaken, a full medical review is undertaken to ensure that the treatment is suitable for you.” For your free consultation and an insight into how the AMA team can help you achieve that perfect look, contact the clinic today.

RESCUE: Some passengers were trapped for over four hours following the two-carriage-crash at Alton Towers

Alton Towers crash:

UK's biggest theme parks to close four roller coaster rides ‘for the foreseeable future’ The Smiler at Alton Towers and Saw, a similar ride at Thorpe Park, have both been shut "for the foreseeable future", owner Merlin Entertainments said. Two rides Dragon's Fury and Rattlesnake at Chessington World of Adventures have also been closed until new safety protocols have been applied. According to Merlin Entertainments, which runs all three theme parks, the closures are while ‘an additional set of safety protocols and procedures’ are introduced. The horrifying two-carriage crash on Tuesday 2nd June at Alton Towers, Smiler

rollercoaster ride, left four people with serious injuries, and the other 12 people trapped on the ride for more than four hours. People at the theme park reported hearing ‘a loud crash’ when the collision happened. Four people - two men, 27 and 18, a woman, 19, and a girl, 17, sustained serious leg injuries, with some of those being “lifechanging”. They were airlifted to major trauma centres after the 16 occupants were rescued from 25ft (7.6m) up in the air at an angle of about 45 degrees. Visitors to Alton Towers reported on social media that the ride had broken down earlier that day. Nick Varney, chief executive of the park's owners Merlin Entertainments, said: "I would like to express my sincerest regret and apology to everyone who suffered injury and distress and to their families. "The safety of our visitors is our primary

concern. The park will remain closed until we understand better the cause of this dreadful incident. "Those two cars should not have been on the same piece of track. Technically that should not have happened. "There are braking locks that should stop two cars being on the same section of track and somehow that didn't work the way it was meant to." A prohibition notice has been served on the Smiler ride by Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors, stopping its use ‘until action is taken to deal with the cause of the failure’. The HSE said it would take action to protect the public if it uncovered ‘evidence that could affect the safety of other rides at the park or elsewhere’. The £18m rollercoaster, which boasts a world record 14 loops, has been closed on two occasions formerly because of safety concerns since opening two years ago.

History of Smiler problems • 16 journalists were left dangling on the Smiler at a steep angle as they tried out the rollercoaster before it opened to the public. • The ride shut for four days in July 2013 after a piece fell off the track, and 48 people had to be rescued. • It closed in August 2013 for five days

due to a ‘technical issue’. • In November 2013, it closed for five days after wheels fell off and hit four people in the front carriage. • Riders were also left stranded in the air when the ride grounded to a halt at the top of a near vertical section 14 months ago

During the holy month of Ramadhan, our routine, diet and food consumption change. But what you need to know is that this sudden change in your dietary habits, combined with the long period of daily fasting, can have a bad effect on your skin. A proper skincare regime is essential to avoid breakouts, dry patches, dull looking skin and all symptoms of the dehydration associated with fasting.

How can you take care of your skin during Ramadan?

• Clean, tone, exfoliate and moisturize your skin! The idea is to remove dead skin caused by the lack of water intake, restore the skin’s natural mineral levels and balance the skin’s oil production. • Fasting dehydrates the skin so it’s very important to make sure that you rehydrate after iftar.

• We recommend that between iftar and suhoor you drink at least eight glasses of water in addition to any other fluids.

Fact:The human body only absorbs 50 to 60 per cent of fruit juice, and just 20 to 30 percent of sodas.

• Eat healthy! There are many foods that can repair dehydrated skin, such as cashews or almonds which are packed with healthy fibers, fatty acids and proteins which will maintain your skin's glow.

• Fruits such as strawberries and blueberries are high in anti-oxidants, which are known for their positive effect on healthy skin. Dates are also a great source of anti-oxidants, vitamin A, iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium that all promote optimum skin health. Apricots aid in the digestion process. Make the best out of your fasting by including healthy nutrients in your iftar and suhoor!

"We are in touch with the family and are going to collect the offending can and have it analysed to see at what stage of the process the lizard got introduced. Once we have investigated, we will put in controls to stop this happening again."

1984 Sikh Genocide to be marked in London

Thousands of Sikhs will march through London this Sunday to commemorate those massacred in India during the events of June and November 1984. An annual event, this will be the first march since India’s current Home Minister, Rajnath Singh declared the events of 1984 as genocide. With planned speeches by Labour MP Tom Watson, Deputy Mayor of London Stephen Greenhalgh and others, Sikhs are looking for similar recognition in the UK. In June 1984, the Indian Army attacked the Golden temple complex of Amritsar, Punjab and later that year in November, Sikhs all over India were massacred following the assassination of Indira Gandhi. One of the organisers of the rally, Jas Singh of the Sikh Federation said: “For many British Sikhs, especially those who fled India and the many that have campaigned for justice, seeing some level of acknowledgment from the Indian government is a step in the right direction. The events are only 31 years old and there are many living survivors in the UK who are waiting for justice.” The issues of 1984 still rankle deeply with many Sikhs, as seen in London in 2012, with the attempted assassination of Kuldip Brar, the former Indian army general who led the attack on the Golden temple, for which four Sikhs were charged. A public inquiry into Britain’s involvement in the

attack is also being pushed by many Sikhs, after declassified documents revealed by MP Tom Watson showed that India sought advice from the UK prior to the attack. Survivors of the genocide include Jagraj Singh of West London. Riding the train through Delhi with his family during the height of the attacks in 1984, Jagraj’s mother plaited his long hair and dressed him as a girl to avoid the attentions of ravenous mobs seeking out Sikhs to murder.

“The events of 1984 were an organised one-sided massacre. Now that the Indian government has recognised them as a genocide, it is time for the British establishment to do the same, especially considering that Thatcher’s government were directly involved.” The Freedom March will begin at 11am on Sunday 7th June at Hyde Park, moving through Green Park and culminating at Waterloo Place at 2pm, where the Remembrance Rally will commence until 5pm.

Bradford College awarded leadership academy status Bradford College has been awarded Leadership Academy status at an official ceremony held at the College’s Trinity Green Campus by Sports Leaders UK on Thursday 4th June. Sports Leaders UK is a charity delivering sports leadership awards and qualifications for 200,000 people a year, through 4,000 schools, colleges, local authorities, prisons and young offender units. It acts as an Awarding Body providing nationally recognised qualifications. Bradford College has been recognised for its provision of high quality training and excellent skills development, which has had a positive impact on the local community through the Sports Leaders and the activities they run. Rob Watson, Operations Officer for Sports Leaders UK was delighted to present Bradford College with the award during the official ceremony. Speaking at the event Rob said: “The Leadership Academy status that has been awarded to Bradford College is a status for excellent practice in delivery of Sports Leaders UK qualifications. It highlights the College’s key commitment to its

personal and learners development professional through additional learning, integrated into their normal study programme. “Bradford College deliver the pathway of Sport Leadership from Level 1 through to Level 3, giving learners of all levels the chance to experience delivering sports activities to a range of children. These courses are often the basis of a career in coaching, teaching and fitness, giving learners their first experience of leading up to 30 children at a time. It is these experiences that build employability skills in these learners such as teamwork, communication, organisation, time management. These skills

are crucial in taking the learner to the next level beyond college, whether that is employment, university or apprenticeships.” Sports Leaders UK courses change lives, sometimes even save lives. The range of awards and qualifications equips people with the skills and motivation to create and run sporting activities in the community. Sports Leaders also deliver community activities on a voluntary basis as part of the qualification. Sports Lecturer Adam Trunks has been working closely with Sports Lecturer Danni Baker to ensure the Sports Leaders receive high quality training, which has had a positive impact on the local community.

Commenting on becoming an accredited centre, Sports Lecturer Adam Trunks said: “I’d like to thank Sports Leaders UK for accrediting the College with Leadership Academy status. The students benefit from this by being able to go out into industry, go to primary schools and work with other academies which have special needs. They gain great life experience as Sports Leaders and it also provides them with knowledge that can help them to progress in employment or Higher Education. Not many colleges offer this, so it helps our students with their UCAS applications by giving them an extra point, which gives them a competitive advantage over other students going to university.” Sports student Ashley Barton, 19, would like to pursue a career as a Sports Coach once he has completed his studies. Commenting on what he felt he had gained from taking part, Ashley said: “This has really helped me develop my skills as a coach. If people come to me that have special needs or disabilities, I now feel I will be able to help coach them. I’m quite a shy person but this is helping to boost confidence, not only in myself, but

also in working with different ranges of abilities.” Sports student Tobias Rawcliff, 19, would like to pursue a career in Sports Marketing once he has completed his studies. Elaborating further Tobias said: “Completing the Sports Leaders has given me the opportunity to work with different people, of varying abilities in different environments, which does boost your confidence. It’s good to benefit from having an additional qualification as well. I’m also hoping to secure a work placement with Adidas in Germany next year and I think this will help.” Craven Feeley, 19, added: “We’ve had the chance to work with children of varying abilities. I’ve got a lot out of it! It’s been great to build rapport with the children, whilst also developing their sporting skills.”

AL14 LAH JE5 5US 15 LAM DVLA censors number plates Religious slogans, homophobic words and DR12 UGS sexual innuendos deemed ‘inappropriate’

BANNED:

If you’ve ever dreamed about having a funny number plate for your car, or perhaps something a bit smutty or rude, then forget it. DVLA licencing bosses have revealed the banned list of raunchy and ‘inappropriate’ registration plates, including religious references, homophobic words and innuendos– and the list runs to 46 pages. The organisations has even clamped down on those related to alcohol abuse, such as SL05 HED and AL60 POP. This year the licensing authority has banned OS55 AMA, P15 OFF, PR15 SON, DR12 UGS, HE12 OIN, SH15 TTY, UP15 BUM and WA15 TED, just to name a few. Religious references such as JE5 5US, KO12 AAN and AL14 LAH have also been put on the list of the unobtainable.

The authority's proprietary steering group - which meets twice a year - has also forbidden a man whose surname is Islam from getting an 15LAM plate because it was deemed ‘inappropriate’. The man, who did not want to give his first name, told the Guardian: “I made an inquiry to the DVLA about the possibility of obtaining '15LAM', only to be told that this was an inappropriate licence plate. “I'm not particularly religious, but I am proud of my name. “I was thinking of buying the plate as a gift for my brother. “To be told that my name is offensive is really upsetting.” Despite DVLA banning the 15LAM registration number, people associated with the number plate industry are eagerly waiting for the auction of MO14MED, which, they

believe might fetch £100,000 for the Treasury. In the last financial year the DVLA raised more than £105 million for the Treasury through the sale and auction of personalised registrations. They have said that they only ban certain plates if they are ‘likely to cause general offence or embarrassment’ on the grounds of racial, political, or religious sensitivities or if the authority finds them in ‘poor taste’. A few days ago a plate with the registration number KR15HNA was sold at auction for £233,000. DVLA bosses want to keep rude registrations off the road, but surprisingly it’s allowed PEN15 and ORG45M, which were released some years back. However, DVLA has the power to cancel the number, if it gets complaints related to a

specific plate, and may ask the driver to give it back to the authority. A large number of offensive suffixes are banned every six months as the new plates appear, but the 46page list also includes some surprise entries. GU11 LTY is forbidden, along with AL60 POP, PRO5 TAT and MO55 AD. The PEN 15 plate is currently in the hands of dealer RegTransfers, which is hoping to arouse interest in bids over £100,000. The highest sum forked out for a registration from DVLA was for '25 O', which alone raised over £518,000. It was sold last November to John Collins, a classic Ferrari dealer in Ascot, Berkshire. Bidding for the plate was fierce because it can be attached to a Ferrari 250 GTO, one of which fetched a record £22.8m at auctioneers Bonhams last year. Potentially offensive number

plates became a serious issue for the DVLA after the release of H8 GAY in 2006 was met with protest because it was deemed offensive to gay people. Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson was chased out of Argentina after driving a Porsche across the country with the number plate H982 FKL, which was seen as a reference to the Falklands War. A DVLA spokesman said: “Registration numbers are withheld in instances where if displayed on a number plate they are likely to cause general offence or embarrassment. “The reasons can be on the grounds of political, racial and religious sensitivities or simply that they are regarded as being in poor taste.” For the full list of banned number plates go to www.asianexpress.co.uk

Former Bradford West MP George Galloway has announced his intentions of running for the Mayor of London position in 2016. Muslim woman wins head-scarf discrimination case against designer label A United States Supreme Court has ruled in favor of a Muslim woman who sued for discrimination after being denied a sales job at age 17 at an Abercrombie & Fitch Co (ANF.N) clothing store in Oklahoma because she wore a head scarf for religious reasons. In an 8-1 decision in the important religious rights case, the court backed Samantha Elauf, who had been rejected under Abercrombie's sales staff "look policy" after coming to her job interview wearing the head scarf, or hijab, used by many Muslim women. The decision marked a victory for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency that sued the company on Elauf's behalf after she was turned down in 2008 at an Abercrombie Kids store in Tulsa. "Observance of my faith should not have prevented me from getting a job. I am glad that I stood up for my rights, and happy that the EEOC was there for me and took my complaint to the courts," Elauf said in a statement issued by the EEOC. Elauf, now 24, initially won a $20,000 judgment against Abercrombie before a federal district court. The 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver then threw that out, ruling in favor of Abercrombie, before the high court backed Elauf. "We welcome this historic ruling in defense of religious freedom at a time when the American Muslim community is facing increased levels of Islamophobia," said Nihad Awad, the national executive

director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. The ruling was the second decision by the high court during its current term in favor of a Muslim alleging discrimination. In January, the

Land swap finally goes ahead

Bangladesh and India will seal an agreement simplifying their 4,000 kilometre border at the weekend, over four decades after the neighbours first tried to untangle complex territorial rights set down in 1713. The agreement will be one of several to be finalised during a two-day state visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi beginning on Saturday, Dhaka's Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali told journalists on Friday. In 1974, the then leaders of the two countries - Indira Gandhi of India and Sheikh

Mujibur Rahman of Bangladesh - agreed to swap almost 200 enclaves of land located in one country but officially belonging to the other. “But with the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (in 1975), along with the almost all the members of his family, the process of the agreement stopped for a long time,” Ali said. The agreement, which has since been updated, will be “a historic milestone in the relationship between the two neighbouring south Asian countries,” he added.

Four killed in Nepal helicopter crash

An army report has confirmed that a small helicopter on an earthquake relief mission crashed in high mountains in northeast Nepal on Tuesday, killing at least four people. The aircraft, operated by private company Mountain Air, crashed in the district of Sindhupalchowk, about 60 km (38 miles) northeast of Kathmandu. Sindhupalchowk, which borders Tibet, was one of the regions worst hit by the April and May earthquakes that killed

8,700 people. A massive international relief and rescue operation was carried out for the victims of the disaster and is still underway. “We have recovered four bodies from the crash site,” said Brigadier General Jagadish Chandra Pokharel, spokesman for the Nepali army. Some media reports said the chopper hit electric power lines before it crashed, but Pokharel said the cause of the crash was ‘unclear’.

A driver contracted with U.S.based online taxi company Uber Technologies was arrested near New Delhi on Tuesday 2nd June, police said, after a woman passenger accused him of sexual harassment when she hailed his cab over the weekend. Uber was banned in New Delhi in December 2014 after another woman passenger accused one of its drivers of rape. The company resumed its services in January after applying for a radio taxi licence, which it still awaits. The latest accusation surfaced on social media when the woman's brother, Ankush Pathania, posted a picture of Uber's response to the complaint and urged the company to take swift action. A police complaint was registered late on Monday 1st June. “The driver was arrested after the initial investigation,” said a police official in Gurgaon, a city near New Delhi. “He is in police custody and we are cross-questioning him.”

India: Uber driver accused of sexual harassment Pathania's sister, a 21-year-old professional dancer, has alleged that an Uber driver kissed her hand after dropping her in Gurgaon on Saturday night. She ran away when the driver tried to kiss her on the mouth. “My sister will now share her part of the story with the police,” Pathania said. “We want the driver to be punished.” Indian law generally prohibits the identification of victims of sex crimes. The law is intended to protect victims' privacy and keep them from the media glare in a country where the social stigma associated with such crimes can be devastating. Authorities in New Delhi have maintained that Uber is banned in the capital and is operating without

permission. However, the transport ministry said in April such companies should be better regulated but not banned. Uber offers taxi services using its mobile application. In recent weeks, it has launched new safety features including stricter background screening of its drivers and an inapp SOS button that connects to the police. Before the driver's arrest, police official Amit Kumar said both the woman and the driver would be questioned in the case. Uber said it was willing to share the necessary information with authorities. “Uber has a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour,” Uber's general manager for Delhi, Gagan Bhatia, said in a statement.

“Governments need to take urgent action to address violence against children, both for the sake of the children themselves and for the wellbeing of future generations”

Child abuse costs East Asia and Pacific

$209 billion a year Child abuse and neglect are costing countries in East Asia and the Pacific an estimated $209 billion a year, equivalent to two per cent of the region's GDP, researchers have said in the region's first study of the economic impact of abuse. Child abuse affects victims' education, long-term physical and mental health and work performance, and increases the risk of adult aggression, violence and criminality, the researchers said. Some maltreatment is preventable. Earlier studies in the United States and Europe, cited by the researchers, found that the right forms of prevention can reduce severe forms of maltreatment by up to 50 per cent. "We all know that violence against children must stop because it is morally wrong. This research shows that inaction about violence results in serious economic costs to countries and communities," the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) regional director

for East Asia and the Pacific, Daniel Toole, said in a statement. "Governments need to take urgent action to address violence against children, both for the sake of the children themselves and for the wellbeing of future generations," he added. UNICEF commissioned international experts to carry out the research. They aggregated data from 364 previous studies of neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, and the impact of witnessing domestic violence, and estimated the costs involved. The most common form of abuse in the region is emotional, which affects 42 per cent of girls in high-income countries. In China alone it affects some two thirds of children aged three to six years old. It also costs the most - $65.9 billion - followed by physical and sexual abuse (costing $39.9 billion a year each), neglect ($32.4 billion), and witnessing domestic violence ($31 billion). East Asia has one of the world's

highest levels of ill-health caused by child sexual abuse. About one third of men and boys have experienced physical abuse in lower middle income countries throughout the Pacific and East Asian region, and 22 per cent of women and girls have experienced sexual abuse. A separate study carried out in Cambodia recently found that over 50 percent of children experience at least one form of violence before the age of 18. About a quarter of Cambodian children had been emotionally abused and five percent sexually abused. "All children have the right to live free from violence, which harms their physical and mental growth and inhibits the growth of their society and economies," Toole said. "Violence against children often takes place behind closed doors but it is preventable when people come together and say loudly and clearly that this is not acceptable," he added.

Malala ‘attackers’ freed Eight men who had been charged with organising the shooting of education activist, Malala Yousafzai in 2012, have been freed due to what Pakistani officials labelled ‘a lack of evidence’. Ten men were initially sentenced in April this year for 25 years each after being convicted in a trial held behind closed doors. The news of eight of the men’s release on Friday 5th June, came as a shock to many and once again

Insufficient evidence to jail men who ‘admitted’ role in shooting brings the heavily criticised justice system in Pakistan into question. Senior police official Salim Khan said they were freed due to a lack of evidence. “The only reason for their release was lack of proof against them,” Khan said. Prosecutor Naeem Khan said the men had confessed to the court that they had helped plan the attack yet denied that any of them was the actual gunmen. “During the trial, all the 10 persons had admitted and confessed their role in Malala's attack before the judge of the anti-terrorism court. But only two of them, Izhar Khan and Israrullah Khan, were convicted

while the remaining eight were freed,” Khan said. Pakistani Taliban militants claimed responsibility for attacking Malala in 2012 as she travelled home from school in Swat, northwest of the capital Islamabad. She was shot in the head and airlifted to Britain for treatment, where she now lives. Two other schoolgirls were also wounded. Malala became a global symbol of defiance after she campaigned for girls' education despite Taliban repression and she won the 2014 Nobel Peace prize. Khan said he filed an appeal against the acquittal on 18th May but the men had already been freed on 30th April.

Hypersonic Fancy popping over to New York for the day? Well, it may sound like a fanciful sci-fi idea, but flights between New York and London taking just an hour could be just eight years away! The technology that the U.S Airforce are currently working on for the hypersonic air vehicle is based on the X-51 Waverider, which flew at a staggering Mach 5.1 (or 3,882 mph) 60,000 ft over the Pacific two years ago. Chief scientist Mica Endsley said that it's more science fact than science fiction. “X-51 was really a proof of concept test. It showed that you could get a scram jet engine, launch it off an aircraft and it could go hypersonic. “It was able to go more than Mach 5 until it ran out of fuel. It was a very successful test of an airborne hypersonic weapons system.” For those planning a day-trip shopping in Times Square, though, be warned that they're currently developing the technology for solely military means, and hope to be able to use their findings in missile testing by 2020.

• INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS Pakistan ruled out sharing its nuclear weapons with Saudi Arabia, insisting that the atomic arsenal would continue serving solely for Pakistan's national defense even as world powers and Iran near a possible nuclear agreement. Closing a wide-ranging trip to Washington, Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry angrily rejected speculation that his country could sell or transfer nuclear arms or advanced technology as ‘unfounded and baseless’. Pakistan has long been among the world's greatest proliferation

threats, having shared weapons technology with Iran, Libya and North Korea. And American and other intelligence services have been taking seriously the threat of Saudi Arabia or other Arab countries potentially seeking the Muslim country's help in matching Iran's nuclear capabilities, even if the U.S. says there is no evidence of such action right now. "Pakistan is not talking to Saudi Arabia on nuclear issues, period," Chaudhry insisted. The arsenal, believed to be in excess of 100 weapons, is focused only on

Pakistan's threat perception from ‘the East’, Chaudhry said, a clear reference to long-standing rival and fellow nuclear power India. Chaudhry said his country has significantly cracked down in recent years on proliferation, improving its export controls and providing U.N. nuclear monitors with all necessary information. Pakistan also won't allow any weapons to reach terrorists, he said. Pakistan detonated its first nuclear weapons in 1998, shortly after India did. At the same time, the father of

Pakistan's nuclear program, A.Q. Khan, was shopping advanced technology to many of the world's most distrusted governments. He sold centrifuges for enriching bombmaking material to the Iranians, Libyans and North Koreans, and also shared designs for fitting warheads on ballistic missiles. He was forced into retirement in 2001. Concerns now centre on how the Sunni Arab governments of the Middle East will respond if the U.S. and other governments clinch a nuclear deal with Shiite Iran by the end of the month. Such

questions inevitably lead to Pakistan, the only Muslim country in the nuclear club and one with historically close ties to Saudi Arabia. Saudi officials, for their part, have repeatedly refused to rule out any steps to protect their country, saying they will not negotiate their faith or their security. Chaudhry was in the American capital for a U.S.-Pakistan strategic dialogue and meetings with several senior diplomatic and military officials.

US Metro blocks Prophet Muhammad subway cartoon Subway train officials in Washington DC have blocked plans by an American free speech pressure group to have a controversial cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad displayed on the underground rail services. The American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) wanted to display the cartoon, which won first prize at an event in Texas. Washington transport authorities have banned political, religious and advocacy adverts on the subway. The transport authority in the US capital voted unanimously to suspend advertisements it describes as ‘issue-oriented’. AFDI founder Pamela Geller strongly criticised the decision to ban the advert, describing it as an attack on freedom of speech. Ms Geller commented on her website that: “Rewarding terror with submission is defeat, absolute and complete defeat. “These cowards may claim that they are making people safer, but I submit to you the opposite. They

are making it far more dangerous for Americans everywhere.” The advert calls for Americans to support free speech and features a bearded, turbanwearing Muhammad waving a sword and shouting: “You can't draw me!” In reply, a cartoon bubble portrays an artist grasping a pencil and saying: “That's why I draw you.” Ms Geller insists the cartoon is a ‘political opinion’ which does not contain any violence. Her organisation, described by critics as a hate group, has run controversial adverts on subways and buses in Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco as well as in Washington's Metro in 2012. 56-year-old Ms Geller describes herself online as a free-speech activist, but her critics denounce her as a ‘bigot’. She insists the focus of her criticism is chiefly against radical Islam, but has been quoted as saying that “Islam is the most anti-semitic, genocidal ideology in the world”.

Smoke ‘em Ferrari’s turbocharged 488GTB is a generational shift of much-loved 458 Italia

Forty years on from the unveiling of its first ever mid-rear-engined V8 model, the 308 GTB, the Prancing Horse opens a new chapter in its 8cylinder history. The turbocharged Ferrari 488 GTB - successor to the much-loved 458 Italia, provides track-level performance that can be enjoyed to the full even by non-professional drivers in everyday use. Giving us a generational shift, its new eight-cylinder, mid-engine sportscar standard-bearer is an insanerevving, naturally aspirated V-8 retired in favor of a turbocharged unit. This follows Ferrari’s recent promise that all of its future engines will be turbocharged or hybridized. The new engine is smaller than its predecessor, and its displacement of 488 cubic centimeters per cylinder gives the car its name: 488GTB. Multiplied by eight, that works out to 3902 cc for the new 90-degree V-8, which is mated to, as was the 458’s V-8, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Smoke ‘em Ferrari’s turbocharged 488GTB is a generational shift of much-loved 458 Italia Continued from page 93

Despite the 0.6-liter reduction in displacement, the new engine makes more power: 661 horsepower at 8000 rpm, versus 597 horsepower at 9000 rpm for the 458 Speciale. Torque, predictably, is greater as well, reaching 561 lb-ft at a low 3000 rpm, far eclipsing the 458 Speciale’s 398 lb-ft. Like the screaming, naturally aspirated 458, the 488 uses an engine with a flat-plane crankshaft that should help it retain the “seductive soundtrack” that Ferrari promises. Variable Torque Management helps get the power all the way to the rear wheels posthaste. Ferrari claims that the superquick sevenspeed transmission will enable the engine to hit the rev limiter in fourth gear just six seconds after the car leaves from a stop. The extra oomph shaves only

fractions of a second from the official Fiorano lap time compared with the latest and greatest iteration of the 458, the Speciale A (which just debuted last fall). The 488GTB gets around Fiorano in 1:23.0, a halfsecond quicker than the Speciale A. The two cars both claim a 3.0second zero-to-62-mph time. As speeds increase, however, the 488GTB shows its advantage, reaching 124 mph in 8.3 seconds, compared to its forebear’s 9.5. Aside from the revolutionary change affecting the redheaded beauty under the plexiglass cover, the specs indicate that the 488GTB otherwise hews closely to the formula that has been so successful in the 458. The shapely new body is 1.6 inches longer than the 458 Italia’s, 0.6 inch wider, and identical in height. Ferrari says the new car has less aerodynamic drag but creates 50 percent greater downforce (stated

as 717 pounds at 155 mph). Large, body-side air intakes are split into two sections and are supposed to reference the original mid-engine, eight-cylinder Ferrari, the 308. Among the 488’s airflow-managing elements are an “Aero Pillar” on the front end, “vortex generators” underneath, and active flaps in the rear diffuser. A “blown spoiler” (trickle-down Formula 1 technology) funnels air in through a wide channel at the base of the rear window and out the back of the car, just above the license plate. Ferrari’s quoted “dry weight” (at 3020 pounds) is 22 pounds lighter than it cites for the standard 458 Italia, with 53.5 percent pressing down on the rear wheels. (The forged 20-inch wheels themselves save 18 pounds.) For reference, the lightest 458 Italia we’ve weighed tipped our scales at 3325 pounds in road-ready trim.

Inside, there’s much that looks familiar, with the photos showing aggressively bolstered, Daytonastyle seats, conventional knobs and switches (no touch screen here), and a complete absence of column stalks. The multifunction steering wheel includes buttons even for lights, wipers, and turn signals, in addition to the damper setting, engine start, and Ferrari’s manettino chassis-control switch. Viewed through the steering wheel is the large, central tachometer with digital gear indicator, and it’s flanked by configurable screens. New seats and door panels are designed to make the interior more humane. A fresh key design mimics the shape of the engine’s intake plenums and permits passive entry and starting. Optional carbon-fiber trim can cover various parts of the interior (and the exterior aero

fillips); also optional are a telemetry system like that in the LaFerrari and a 12-speaker, 1280-watt stereo. One of the more intriguing bits of technology is Ferrari’s Side Slip Angle Control. It debuted on the 458 Speciale but this time around is “more precise yet less invasive” which is how we generally like things. It harnesses the electronically controlled rear differential, the traction control system, and now the electronically controlled dampers to enable greater tail-out antics. First, though, you’ve got to get your hands on one. There’s no word yet on pricing, but for reference, Ferrari currently asks around £160,000 for a 458, so figure something north of there. For those special customers deemed worthy, deliveries of the 488GTB start in Europe in July.

Hot hatch Honda Civic Type R billed as the race car for the road After a five year wait, 2015 sees the arrival of the world’s most keenly anticipated hot hatch, the Honda Civic Type R. Billed as a ‘race car for the road’, the all-new Honda Civic Type R is powered by the most extreme and highperforming Type R engine ever built, and will set new standards in the high-performance front-wheel drive hatchback segment. A world-first application of Honda’s new Vtec Turbo engine, a sensuous sporting sound, aggressive function-led styling, and pioneering new chassis technologies combine to deliver one of the most immersive and rewarding driving experiences available in any sector. Civic Type R is equally at home delivering this experience on the road as it is on the track, at the push of a button. The new 2015 Civic Type R signals the start of a new performance era for Honda, drawing on the brand’s racing DNA to deliver the peak of the Civic lineup. Red-lining at 7,000 rpm, the engine features an advanced new turbocharging system which incorporates Honda’s legendary Variable Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) technology to boost low-end torque while delivering sustained acceleration. The new Civic Type R’s

performance is unmatched in the front-wheel drive hot hatch segment: the 0-to-62 mph sprint takes just 5.7 seconds and top speed, where permitted, is a class-leading 167 mph. Despite this, the Civic Type R achieves low CO2 emissions of just 170 g/km, high-speed fuel consumption and compliance with Euro 6 emissions regulations. The new engine has a high compression ratio of 9.8 and is turbocharged, both of which make thermal management particularly important. As a result, the engineering team incorporated numerous cooling technologies, such as cylinder head and piston cooling, sodium-filled exhaust valves and a high-capacity air-to-air intercooler. The cylinder head has a two-piece water jacket, lowering exhaust gas temperature and effectively lowering the combustion chamber temperature, while each piston individually features a cooling channel to provide increased oil flow. Together, these technologies ensure the engine always delivers a high output even under high load, high speed driving conditions. A slick-shifting, six-speed manual transmission was chosen to safeguard an intimate, rewarding connection with the driver while making the most of the engine’s high output, strong torque and high

revs. Each of the six gear ratios has been optimised for performance and matches the engine’s output and torque curve. For example, the maximum speed of 167mph is achieved in sixth gear when peak power is reached at 6,500 rpm. Final drive is through an exceptionally responsive helical limited slip differential. This type of differential aids strong cornering traction, even during hard cornering. This technology, when compared to a traditional differential, reduces the new Civic Type R’s lap time by three seconds per lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The styling changes uniquely applied give the car an aggressive, purposeful stance, yet almost all have a functional purpose. The size of the holes in the front bumper grille, which serve air to the intercooler, are specifically shaped to minimise aerodynamic losses. The sleek and aerodynamically-efficient design reflects a car developed first and foremost to perform at speed. The focus on aerodynamics has ensured a zero lift coefficient and a minimum of drag which provides a class-leading overall aerodynamic performance. The Civic Type R’s unique aerodynamics utilise specific downforce-generating elements to create overall negative lift which is

unusual in the industry and unique for this class in particular. The focus on airflow, not only around but also through the car, ensures negative lift at both axles combined with a minimum of drag. This is particularly noteworthy at the front of the car and allows high speed stability with a class-leading top speed of 167mph. The structure of the rear wing aerofoil – its angle, height and shape as well as its vertical end plates – have been carefully engineered to optimise downforce on the rear axle without causing a significant increase in drag at higher speeds. This helps improve road-holding abilities, particularly through highspeed corners. The new Civic Type R’s front and rear wheel arches are widened to accommodate an increase in front and rear track. The integrated arch extensions are in aluminium, providing a 42% weight saving over a conventional steel panel. The vents in the trailing edge of the front wheel arch extension also improve heat dissipation from the brakes. The front spoilers and door spoilers wear a piano-black gloss finish to highlight the car’s wide and low appearance. At the rear of the car, a pair of dual-exhaust tailpipes emerge prominently at the flanks of the rear diffuser. Clearance between

the tailpipe finishers and the pianoblack gloss rear diffuser has been reduced to an absolute minimum of around 20 mm. This imbues the car’s rear-view with an extra degree of aggressive tautness. At the front, running along the lower edge of each combination headlamp cluster is an LED daytime running light. Its sharply ‘up-ticked’ shape, produced using two LED light sources and a light guide, highlights the headlamp’s shape and is the longest lighting element produced by Honda. The rear combination lamps also feature distinctive LED light bars. New lightweight, high rigidity 19inch alloy wheels, unique to the new Civic Type R, complement the visual changes. They fill the enlarged wheel arches with 235/35 R19 tyres that were developed specially for the Type R in conjunction with Continental. The new Civic Type R is available in five distinctive colours that give the purposeful new styling added impact. As well as Championship White – shared with successive generations of iconic Type R vehicles – buyers can choose from Crystal Black (pearlescent), Polished Metal (metallic), Brilliant Sporty Blue (metallic) and Milano Red.

A new era of space Just months after the debut of the hatchback, comes the new Skoda Superb Estate, which is setting new standards in its segment in terms of space, comfort, safety and connectivity. The new Skoda Superb Estate offers the best interior space in its segment. It is based on MQB technology, with a wheelbase that has been extended by 80mm to 2,841mm. The track width has increased to 1,584mm at the front and to 1,572mm at the rear. The result: even more interior space. In the latest model, driver and passenger have 39mm more elbow room than before. Headroom in the front is 995mm and 1,001mm in the rear – more than in any other model in the segment. Rear kneeroom is 157mm – around twice as much as the next-best competitor. Elbow room in the rear has been increased by 70mm. The boot volume also sets a new benchmark: 660 litres, representing an increase of 27 litres compared to the previous model. When the back seats are folded down, the boot volume reaches an impressive 1,950 litres. The design of the new estate makes a powerful statement. The design is more passionate, modern and emotionally charged than ever before.

The use of MQB technology also plays a central role when it comes to styling: the longer wheelbase, the shortened front overhang as well as the widened track provide balanced proportions and create the car’s extremely dynamic and sporty impression. In combination with increased vehicle length, a long wheelbase, shortened front overhang, a sweeping roof line and a steeply angled rear window, the silhouette evolves as a stylistically confident, perfect entity. The new Skoda Superb Estate comes with a veritable armada of new assistance systems for increased safety, ecofriendliness and comfort. Like the Superb hatchback, the new Superb Estate also features Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC). Thanks to the new EU6 engines, the latest edition is more powerful and at the same time up to 30 per cent more efficient than its predecessor. Connectivity reaches a new level of quality: the latest generation of infotainment systems automatically connects to all standard smartphones via SmartLink (MirrorLinkTM, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto technology). The optional high-speed internet connection turns the new Superb Estate into a Skoda hotspot on wheels.

In September, the new Skoda Superb Estate will make its motor show debut at the 66th International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany. The new model will be launched into the first markets in the same month, while UK Skoda retailers will start taking orders from June.

Despite overnight rain forcing the abandonment of six games last weekend, the Quaid-e-Azam league still offered up some incredible action on a day where bowlers stole the show. In the Premier Section, leaders Keighley RZM were forced to call off their game with OnQ meaning the chasing pack had a chance to make ground on the table toppers. Over 400 runs were seen in the contest between Darulshafa (218-3) and Kashmir Dewsbury (217-7), with the prior edging the game by four wickets. This season’s surprise package were rampant with the bat, as I Khan hit 82 to complement W Hussain’s 77, as they chased down what looked to be an unlikely total. Elsewhere, Bhalot (118) were unable to lift themselves to second spot after suffering a shock comprehensive loss at the hands of Shimla’s (119-3). Victories were also seen in the Premier Division for White Rose

(174-7) against Raja (54), with A Mahmood taking four wickets for just 11 runs for the victors, and Heaton Park (171-6) over Flix (91). Heaton’s Shoukat Ali with amazing figures of 4-9 in a game which favoured the bowlers. In Section A Group 1, three out of the five games were abandoned due to rain, yet there was certainly no stopping Central Leeds (312-4) with their thrashing of Shaheen (101). Bilal Shahid (125*) hit the highest individual score of the weekend, passing his century in style as the side picked up only their second win

of the season. Meanwhile, Bradford Royals (1353) took advantage of Rising Stars’ cancelled game, climbing to the top of the league following a triumph over Eastern friends (134). Tabs (159) are joint top of the Section A Group 2 Division, after defeating Kings XI (127), with both teams bowled out in quick fashion, whilst Indus Ghari (95-3) made light work of Al-Minarah (92) to tie third. Final action of the weekend was seen at Patriots (222), who registered their first win this year, beating Azad (197-8).

Asian Express’ ‘Rick Manners’ caught up with Amir at his Bolton academy gym and asked him one simple question:

“WILL THE KELL BROOK FIGHT EVER HAPPEN?” RM: With reference to Eddie Hearn’s recent remarks on YouTube, what are your thoughts? AK: Whatever people say they can say. Obviously I have my own team and I’m my own boss. I make decisions my way. I’ve done it the hard way and I will keep doing it my way whatever people say. RM: If the Mayweather fight falls through, would you fight Kell Brook this at Millennium muted for year October/November 2015? AK: No, no, no. May be next year? I’m in an exciting division. We have big names

there, the likes of Tim Bradley, Lamont Peterson, Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia, Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto. I can pick and choose and still make lots of money. RM: What do you think when you hear Eddie Hearn and Kell Brook say you are scared of fighting Kell? AK: I’m not scared. Never scared. They want to mess around with Amir Khan, get me angry so they can get the fight made. And the only time they make it in the media, is when they mention Amir Khan otherwise nobody knows Kell Brook.

Manners’ Corner

This weekend has been fantastic for British boxing. Heavyweight Anthony ‘AJ’ Joshua steam rolled rated American Kevin Johnson with a second round KO demolition job. Is this the great British Heavyweight hope the British fans have been waiting for? Talented Welshman Lee Selby came through nicely to win the IBF featherweight world championship by stopping Russia’s Evgeny Gradovich, in the eighth round. Keep winning Josh ‘The Leeds Warrior’ Warrington. Kell ‘The Special One’ Brook destroyed Frankie Gavin in six painful and bruising rounds of his IBF title defence, making firm his position in the welterweight division. Amir ‘King’ Khan beats New Yorker Chris Algieri to get into joint pole position with Danny Garcia in the chasing of the Mayweather super fight. So generally British boxing is in real good shape of late! Coming up next we have Paul Smith v Andre ‘Son Of God’ Ward. Now that is a hard ask. Also George Groves v Badou Jack, fighting for the WBC title, in the US. All are due to fight for world titles in the US shortly. So as they say it is all good! Lets’ not forget the

local professional boxing talent representing Yorkshire, coming up through the ranks. Undefeated middleweight Reece Cartwright of Leeds moves to 7-0 and the featherweight Zahid ‘Magic Man’Hussain of Leeds who moves to 3-0. Both winning the International Masters Championships, in their respective weight classes, their first professional titles against

RM: Amir I’ve got just one more question for you. I’ve known you since the Paul McCloskey post fight press conference drama where it got quite heated with Eddie Hearn and his father Barry, way back in 2011. There was a slight sense of disrespect and animosity between the two camps at the time, Matchroom and Khan Promotions. As you know the situation now with Eddie Hearn and Kell Brook being on the internet saying all sorts of disrespectful stuff. Do you think it will be the same sort of situation like Ricky Hatton and Junior Witter when they both got personal. There was a lot of disrespect there. In the end they, Junior and his team, wound Ricky up so much that Ricky said at the time “you know what Junior I’m not giving you the opportunity to fight me. We are boxers and both deserve

tough international opposition, risky business so early in their careers. And the Bradford sensation up and coming welterweight prospect Darren Tetley 7-0. These kids are definitely the ones’ to look out for in the future.

Final Thoughts

The Amir Khan v Kell Brook fight. I really do not think this fight is going to happen as in my opinion, for what it is worth, Kell and Eddie are making this very personal with their internet verbal outbursts and blasts towards Amir Khan and being slightly disrespectful and insulting with it towards Khan. I think this would put anybody off doing business with them. Khan v Brook yes it is a fantastic match up, it is a 50/50 fight for sure but trying to goad a business savvy Amir Khan into the fight just aint going to happen. I believe Amir’s beyond all that now. My point is Kell Brook’s a Matchroom fighter and Amir Khan’s an Al Haymon fighter. They are both on totally different paths, guided by their different teams each having their own business goals. Lets not lose sight of this. This is prize fighting, it’s business. Me personally, if I was in Khan’s shoes and there was a great chance of me getting the Mayweather fight too right I would get some tick over fights for the next year, win them thus keeping me in a good position to fight Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, the worlds’ richest and greatest fighter of our era. Ricky Hatton did. Manny Pacquiao did. Win, lose or draw... I know I would.

AMIR “KING” KHAN ANSWERS THE KELL BROOK QUESTION IN DEPTH a degree of respect so you aint going to get this fight.” Amir do you think we are going to end up with a situation like this between you and Kell Brook? AK: Yes it is going that way. Like when Ricky Hatton had the arguments with Junior Witter. They (Kell and Eddie) think they are giving the boxing fans what they want. But they are doing it the wrong way. They need to do it the professional way, the proper way. That is why the fight is not going to happen. They keep disrespecting and making it about me not wanting to fight and taking it personally and stuff. They need to let it happen itself naturally without forcing it. The way I see it is, Kell Brook really wants the fight

because he knows it is going to be the biggest pay day of his career. Also for him to get that pay day, he needs to make it happen before he gets beat by somebody else, a decent fighter. I don’t think he wants to fight anyone in the top ten who is going to be dangerous. Because he knows he’s going to get beat but he doesn’t mind getting beat by me because he knows there’s going to be big big money that comes with it. Look at it as a business move and it is a very smart business move that Kell and his team would be making because they know it is going to generate millions. The thing is for me it’s gone past the money side or titles stage, it is all about building a legacy for me and having the big fights I want.

“I’M NOT SCARED OF KELL BROOK, I’M JUST NOT INTERESTED”

Khan rejects Kell Brook’s big fight offer this year Amir ‘King’ Khan, fresh from his 12 rounds point victory over New Yorker Chris Algieri, has told Asian Express Sports Columnist, Rick Manners, Kell Brook is not even on his radar. Ahead of a possible showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jnr, the Bolton boxer knew that a win in New York’s Barclays Centre last weekend would keep him in the

running for the mega bout, however a loss would mean an end to the dream of fighting the world’s finest marquee fighter. And yes Khan managed to claim victory on Friday 29th May. Khan controlled the fight

from start to finish and even though Algieri pushed Khan hard in the early rounds of the fight, achieving some successes by connecting and catching Khan with some great right hand power shots, Khan cleverly manoeuvred his way out of trouble to secure 115113, 117-111, 117-111 for a comfortable and decisive points win.
