BANNED: DVLA censors number plates If you’ve ever dreamed about having a funny number plate for your car, or perhaps something a bit smutty or rude, then forget it. DVLA licencing bosses have revealed the banned list of raunchy and ‘inappropriate’ registration plates, including religious references, homophobic words and innuendos– and the list runs to 46 pages. The organisations has even clamped down on those related to alcohol abuse, such as SL05 HED and AL60 POP. This year the licensing authority has banned OS55 AMA, P15 OFF, PR15 SON, DR12 UGS, HE12 OIN, SH15 TTY, UP15 BUM and WA15 TED, just to name a few. Religious references such as JE5 5US, KO12 AAN and AL14 LAH have also been put on the list of the unobtainable. The authority's proprietary steering group - which meets twice a year - has also forbidden a man whose surname is Islam from getting an 15LAM plate because it was deemed ‘inappropriate’. The man, who did not want to give his first name, told the Guardian: “I made an inquiry to the DVLA about the possibility of obtaining '15LAM', only to be told that this was an inappropriate licence plate. “I'm not particularly religious, but I am proud of my name. “I was thinking of buying the plate as a gift for my brother. “To be told that my name is offensive is really upsetting.” Despite DVLA banning the 15LAM registration number, people associated with the number plate industry are eagerly waiting for the auction of MO14MED, which, they believe

might fetch £100,000 for the Treasury. In the last financial year the DVLA raised more than £105 million for the Treasury through the sale and auction of personalised registrations. They have said that they only ban certain plates if they are ‘likely to cause general offence or embarrassment’ on the grounds of racial, political, or religious sensitivities or if the authority finds them in ‘poor taste’.

a registration from DVLA was for '25 O', which alone raised over £518,000. It was sold last November to John Collins, a classic Ferrari dealer in Ascot, Berkshire. Bidding for the plate was fierce because it can be attached to a Ferrari 250 GTO, one of which fetched a record £22.8m at auctioneers Bonhams last year. Potentially offensive number plates became a serious issue for the DVLA after the release of H8

“Registration numbers are withheld in instances where if displayed on a number plate they are likely to cause general offence or embarrassment.” A few days ago a plate with the registration number KR15HNA was sold at auction for £233,000. DVLA bosses want to keep rude registrations off the road, but surprisingly it’s allowed PEN15 and ORG45M, which were released some years back. However, DVLA has the power to cancel the number, if it gets complaints related to a specific plate, and may ask the driver to give it back to the authority. A large number of offensive suffixes are banned every six months as the new plates appear, but the 46-page list also includes some surprise entries. GU11 LTY is forbidden, along with AL60 POP, PRO5 TAT and MO55 AD. The PEN 15 plate is currently in the hands of dealer RegTransfers, which is hoping to arouse interest in bids over £100,000. The highest sum forked out for

GAY in 2006 was met with protest because it was deemed offensive to gay people. Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson was chased out of Argentina after driving a Porsche across the country with the number plate H982 FKL, which was seen as a reference to the Falklands War. A DVLA spokesman said: “Registration numbers are withheld in instances where if displayed on a number plate they are likely to cause general offence or embarrassment. “The reasons can be on the grounds of political, racial and religious sensitivities or simply that they are regarded as being in poor taste.” For the full list of banned number plates go to www.asianexpress.co.uk

Bradford Council's mobile app has been nominated for a national award. The app, launched a year ago for Apple and Android smartphones and tablets, has landed a place on the Digital Leaders 100 list. The awards celebrate the highest digital achievements from across the UK's public, private and non-profit sectors. They are split into 10 categories, with the Bradford Council app being entered in the category for best citizen services app. The final running order of the Digital Leaders list is decided by a public vote. These votes are then combined with the views of a judging panel of digital experts and the final version announced at a London ceremony on 25th June.

Religious slogans, homophobic words and sexual innuendos deemed ‘inappropriate’ Galloway to run for London Mayor Former Bradford West MP George Galloway has announced his intentions of running for the Mayor of London position in 2016. The Respect Party leader took to Twitter to declare his bid, posting a picture of himself sitting on a bed with his son and the caption: “Dad, you’ve got this. I’ve got your back!”, adding in the Tweet’s message: “I’m standing for Mayor of London 2016.” After the post, Mr Galloway appeared on LBC Radio where he said his knowledge of London, having previously held the position of MP for Bethnal Green and Bow for five years between 2005 and 2010, would enable him to interact with all communities. He said: “I have a keen understanding of the plurality of London’s population, with many marginalised communities, many of them poor white people, left behind by the drift to the centre and the homogeneity of the mainstream political system.” He continued: “There’s a tide in the affairs of this country, seeking independent-minded larger than life candidates for these directly elected positions, and that’s what I’m going to try to do. “[Boris] has been very successful in projecting himself as an iconoclastic, independent-minded person, even when in fact his views are pretty mainstream right-wing.” The London City Hall elections will take place in May 2016 when current mayor, Boris Johnson, will stand down following his election as MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip.

A dedicated fundraiser from Armley has had her head shaved for charity as she hopes to raise money for victims of the Nepal earthquakes. 24-year-old trainee solicitor, Jazz Kaur, parted ways with her luscious locks on Thursday 28th May, after opting to take part in the mentally challenging fundraiser after seeing ‘shocking images from overseas’. Over 8,000 people lost their lives following the 8.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal in late April, whilst dozens more were killed following a second quake just weeks later. Thousands of men, women and children have been injured by the disaster whilst millions were affected.

As aid missions continue in the country, it is charity champions across the world who have been raising funds for the victims with Jazz adding her name to the list of those offering support. Having her hair shaved by long time friend and barber, Emma Mack, at Woodland Barbers, Swillington, Jazz says despite the initial shock of her ‘new look’, it was worth it for the cause. “I made the decision to shave my head because I wanted to raise awareness of these kids in Nepal who have been affected in such a terrible way following the two earthquakes,” she said. “Their struggle is beyond pain and it is therefore up to us to hold tight and work together to make sure there is help on hand for the victims. “This head shave is for the ones

who are in pain and unable to ask for help, to show we haven't forgotten about them. It is not just for children in Nepal but for children who are struggling all over, and hopefully we can show them that there is a brighter day ahead.” She added: “I will be donating my hair to charity now and just

want to thank everybody who's helped. You have all done more than you realise so thanks and stay blessed.” Jazz’s hair will now be donated to the Little Princess Trust – a charity which provides real-hair wigs to children across the UK who have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment.

She explained why the former Psychology student was deserved of her awards. “It was a pleasure to have nominated her for the award,” she said. “Saliha was an enthusiastic

VOICE: A thousand people demonstrate against austerity in Leeds in driving rain

Yorkshire youth

fight for jobs An anti-austerity protest organised by Leeds Youth Fight for Jobs (YFJ) on the day of the state opening of parliament which inspired protests across the country, drew a thousand protesters despite the driving rain it took place in. The protest which took place in Victoria Gardens, Leeds on Wednesday 27th May, heard from young workers, students, antibedroom tax activists, asylum seekers, rights campaigners and trade unionists amongst others on the savage plans to attack working class people that the new Tory government is announcing. Iain Dalton, Yorkshire YFJ organiser said: “The response today and at demonstrations around the country shows that there is big opposition to what the government is proposing. “Only 24 per cent of the electorate voted for the government. Many young people

who several of their measures are aimed at were below the voting age for that election as well. Interestingly, they’re already pushing back their proposals regarding the human rights act, which shows how protest can move them. “Given the weather, 1,000 people turning up was beyond our expectations. Many of those people who were on their first protest have been in touch with us to ask when the next demonstration is. “We’re building towards a day of action with the Fast Food Rights campaign in Wakefield on the 13th June and, of course, the big anti-austerity demo in London on the 20th June.” YFJ was launched in 2009 by young workers, students and unemployed youth and is supported by eight national trade unions.

Leeds invites everyone to walk the walk

Plans for the first Leeds Festival of Walking will see hundreds of walkers join Janet Street-Porter, TV celebrity and lifetime walking enthusiast at Roundhay Park on Sunday 31st May. After the formal opening at 11am, walkers will step out on a short celebratory walk through the park and the nearby Secret Gorge. Councillor Lisa Mulherin, chair of Leeds Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “Anyone and everyone who enjoys walking is invited to take part and families are particularly welcome. We’ve been delighted to team up with the Ramblers Association to get this event off the ground. “Walking is a great way to be healthy and we have a great range of walks around Leeds for all abilities and interests, with long rural rambles and more urban trails full of amazing sights and historical interest.” A week of walking follows the opening of the festival with over fifty walks ranging from two miles in length at a leisurely pace, to walks of more than ten miles. For those who are at work during the day there are several evening

walks. All the walks are within the boundaries of Leeds. Martin Bennett, Chair of the Leeds Group of the Ramblers' Association, said: “The Celebratory Walk is a short two mile walk which has all the great things about walking we want to celebrate and encourage others to enjoy. There’s healthy exercise, good company and time to chat as you go along. “Walking can be enjoyed by people of a really wide range of ages and capabilities, and it's often traffic free. Getting out in the fresh air for a walk can be the best thing you can give yourself. “There are several short ‘walking for health’ walks, Leeds Get Active walks and Asian

City Connect walks which will help people wanting to have a healthy lifestyle. And for more seasoned walkers, a special feature is a walk of the whole Leeds Country Way – and attractive 62 mile circular route will be walked in six daily stages, the first stage starting from Pudsey.” Everyone is welcome to take part in the Festival. All the walks have a walks leader and they are all free of charge. They are all easily accessible by public transport services from Leeds city centre. The Festival is organised by the Ramblers' Association with the support of Leeds City Council. The festival website can be visited at www.walkleeds.com

Ebola threat in the post TARGETTED: George Galloway was sent a parcel last week which purportedly contained a handkerchief infected with Ebola

It has been a busy few weeks for the former Bradford West MP George Galloway. After losing his seat in office at the start of the month, the Respect Party leader has since been referred to the police over a complaint regarding his parliamentary expenses and now finds himself at the centre of the news once again after being targeted by what he describes as ‘wannabe terrorists’. On Friday 22nd May, a package was received by staff at Mr Galloway’s Bradford offices, on Grattan Road, which claimed to be ‘infected with Ebola’. Staff in the offices had to be quarantined as tests were carried out on a handkerchief which had been found inside the parcel and despite Mr Galloway not being in the office when the parcel arrived, he wrote on Twitter about the situation. “Entirely unconnected to my last tweet; I’ve just been delivered a handkerchief in the post which is said to be infected with Ebola,” the 60year-old who was in Scotland at the time said. Just under two hours later he confirmed the threat had been extinguished, calling on action to be taken against the ‘wannabe terrorists’. “Respect to my staff who suffered a traumatic few hours today,” he

Galloway targeted by threatening package

added. “The biology will surely lead [West Yorkshire Police] to the wannabe terrorists #DNA.” West Yorkshire Police confirmed they attended a property at the address where they established the ‘hazardous substance’ did not pose any risk. Chief Inspector Sarah Baker said: “Expert advice has been sought in relation to the substance allegedly contained in the package and it has been established that it would not pose any risk to public safety. “The letter will be seized by officers and further inquiries made.”

Mosque members cycle their way to fundraising goal

A team of cyclists from across Bradford’s mosques jumped on their bikes for a unique fundraiser last week, taking in the sites of the city’s Masjids in aid of charity. Dressed in yellow, the group set off from the Madni Masjid before calling in at nine separate places of worship who had all signed up to join in with the challenge. Raising funds for Marie Curie Hospice – this year’s Lord Mayor’s Appeal, the group raised more than £3,000 through their efforts. Treasurer at the West Bowling Islamic Society, Rifaqat Ali, says he has a personal affection with the hospice after his father was cared

Upon his father’s passing, Mr Ali says he wanted to do something to give back to the hospice and the community who had given his whole family ‘amazing care and support’. “Over the last four years, we have been raising funds in our mosques for a number of charities including the Marie Curie Hospice,” he explained. “Each year we have collected around four-to-five-hundred pounds but this year we thought we would step it up a bit and get other mosques and members involved.

calling upon the community to help us achieve this.” Following their latest event, cyclists from the Madni Masjid, in West Bowling, presented officials from the Marie Curie Hospice with a cheque totalling £3244.15. Sharon Link, fundraiser at the hospice thanked the group for their support and explained how important fundraising was to ensure the continuous day-to-day running of the charity. “This is a fantastic amount raised by the cyclists and will support 164 hours of nursing care in the Bradford area,” she said. “Marie Curie is here for people living with any terminal illness, and their families, and all our services are provided free of charge. “We can’t do this without the support of our local community to whom we are extremely grateful. I would love to hear from other local people who would like to organise their own events to raise funds for us with the support of the Bradford Hospice Fundraising team.”

‘Now more than ever, Britain needs to be inclusive’ My parents, who moved to Britain from Pakistan, were working class – but worked hard, with integrity and hope. The results are their children. One of my siblings is a head and neck surgeon, another a respected author and journalist. In the New Year’s Honours list, I received a CBE. I’m not saying this to brag, but to show potential. My career began as a teacher in Bradford, and I am now Deputy CEO of QED, helping others to live the best lives they can, promoting education and employment. I say this, because I was born in this country of Pakistan origin and Muslim faith; I’m an ethnic minority at a time in this country where we have been bombarded with antiimmigration rhetoric from all mainstream parties, pre-election. If any of us look about two, three or more generations back, chances are you’ll be an immigrant. Whether it be our (ex) politicians such as Ed

Milliband or one of our great ‘British’ minds in history, such as Sigmund Freud. Even the great British institution– Marks and Spencers - was founded by a refugee from Belarus. There is a prevailing myth that immigrants come to exploit the welfare state. Steal ‘our’ jobs, a drain on the NHS, on benefits. And yet, British people must earn £18,600 before their non-EU spouse can move here. They must also have basic English language skills to enter the UK, which is where QED comes in. We have spent the last six years working with Third Country National women with support from European Union Funds for integration of third country nationals, delivering language and integration courses. There’s no doubt, many EU and nonEU immigrants do jobs that are low paid or low skilled. The fear from some economists is this structurally weakens ‘British’ worker’s bargaining power for

higher wages. This is a myth too. Yes, there are those who pick strawberries, because no-one else will do mundane, back-aching work for low pay. They keep the UK’s farming industries alive when food producers are being squeezed by the high profit margins of supermarkets. There are also those who become our nurses, teachers, and shopkeepers, alongside those who are entrepreneurial and bring big business, and employment. Whatever your views on immigration, it is as old as the hills in our British Isles. I want to explode a few myths, and stereotypes around the women immigrants I have met. In the past few weeks I’ve talked to 340 women on QED integration programmes running across West Yorkshire that teach English language and help equip women, who have come here to marry. These are women from Pakistan, the Middle East, Bangladesh, Africa, India…all of these women have left what they knew about life behind to live with their husbands. They’ve left their parents, siblings, culture, familiarity and love. They have moved to a radically different culture. Some of the women I met have been here as little as a month, others for 35 years, and both spectrums were passionate about engaging in learning English, in becoming part of British society. What I’ve learned from meeting all these women is how much they’ve embraced living in this country, and their huge desire to integrate into British society. 100 per cent felt learning English was the first step to an active social and economic life on their community. They embrace this opportunity, to contribute, to take charge of the health and education of their families. 60 per cent wanted to work, despite the majority being mothers of young children. They wanted to move on to further qualifications. Many cited jobs in health – hospitals, care homes – others in schools – and others wanted to set up their own businesses. A burden to society? If you’ve ever lost a loved one in an NHS

TOGETHER: Adeeba Malik says it is important for myths to be ‘exploded’ regarding immigration in the UK

hospital, you probably would have met one of these women, working a night shift, looking after that most precious of things – whether it be end-of-life care for our elderly relatives, or on the maternity ward. Many of the women I spoke to are inspirational. They knew the value of life here. The freedom, the legal structure of gender equality, they didn’t enjoy in their home countries. The opportunity. What QED’s classes have given many – even those 40 per cent who were well qualified in their home countries – was confidence. To speak English with their children, born here, and to engage with their teachers. To make doctors’ appointments, to learn to drive, be independent regardless of their husbands. And to pursue careers, whether it be as nurses or

entrepreneurs. Anti-immigration rhetoric has done much damage to our social fabric, and lets down the thousands of migrants, who have settled in Britain and chosen to make a life here. Hope and compassion are the greatest benefit to our communities. I hope these women’s stories show we shouldn’t choose exclusion and fear, or think of third-class citizenship. But hope. Britain’s economy, and culture has always thrived from being open and inclusive, with values of fairness and freedom. Now, more than ever, we need to be inclusive. It’s our connection to our neighbours and communities that give value and strength. Asian

INVITE: Suleman and Maryam Adam visited Buckingham Palace after being invited to a prestigious garden party last week

Dinner with

the Queen Dewsbury couple’s ‘once in a lifetime’ Buckingham Palace experience For years, tourists have travelled to London to see the iconic home of British Royalty, taking photographs outside the gates of Buckingham Palace and hoping to get just a glimpse of Her Majesty the Queen. Suleman Adam, from Dewsbury, is no different to the thousands who make the trip to the capital every year yet last week he got the ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ of going inside the historic palace. ‘Solly’ as he is known to all, and his wife Maryam, were just two of the honoured guests to receive an official invite to dine with the Queen herself at a Royal Garden Party on Wednesday 20th May. Describing the experience, Solly recalled his first visit to London and says his look inside the palace will stay with him forever. “For me it is the experience of a lifetime. I remember the first time I went down to Buckingham Palace in 1976 to see the

building and take pictures outside the gates. “Last week, I went inside that same palace and saw what was on the other side. What an honour it was. “For Maryam and myself, the 20th May will always be a date which means a lot to us because that was the day we were in the presence of the Queen. Not just the leader of the UK but the whole Commonwealth.” Solly received his invitation last month from the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Ingrid Roscoe, for the work he has done in the local community. Sponsoring cricket leagues for the past 15 years, it is his passion for the sport that helped him become a community champion in his own right, helping thousands of young players gain access to the game he loves. Commenting on seeing the Queen, he added: “She is a big icon of the world but for almost two hours on that day she was completely focussed on talking with people at the garden party. “I learnt from her the importance of valuing time and meeting people because she was always willing to hold conversations with people and never cut anyone short. “She was just amazing and the whole day was so much better than I could have ever imagined.”

World No Tobacco Day PUT IT OUT: Campaigners in Leeds have been backing the push to stamp out the trade of illicit cigarettes

May 2015 - 4th Edition

Local councils pledge to clamp down on illegal cigarettes Following recent campaigns across Yorkshire and local NHS organisations aimed at reducing smoking, experts in the region are backing World No Tobacco Day on 31st May 2015. This year the day focuses on eliminating the illicit trade in tobacco products. Just last week, a shopkeeper in Bradford was charged for having 22,000 illicit cigarettes and 650 grams of illicit hand rolling tobacco concealed within his store’s ceiling. He was ordered to pay £600 towards costs plus a £60 victim surcharge and serve 48 hours community service. The World Health Organisation estimates Europe can benefit significantly from a reduction in the illicit trade in cigarettes which is estimated to account for between six and ten per cent of the total market in the European Region. Leeds City Council tobacco control expert Paul Lambert said: “One in every 10 cigarettes, and many other tobacco products, consumed worldwide are illegal, making the illicit trade of tobacco products a major global concern. It has an impact on communities’ health, legal, economic, governance and corruption. “The tobacco industry and criminal groups are among those who profit from the illegal tobacco trade, leaving the public to pay the health and security costs. We want to help people

stop smoking, and more importantly never start. “That why we have campaigns like Take 7 Steps Out, as well as encouraging people to use the Stop Smoking Services in the city, which can significantly increase success in stubbing smoking habits out.” Head of West Yorkshire Trading Standards, David Lodge, added that the trade of such illicit products ‘undercuts efforts to reduce the harm tobacco does across communities’. “Illicit tobacco is cheaper it enables children to start smoking due to its affordability and being sold by unscrupulous dealers,” he said. “We work in a multi-agency work in Leeds and across West Yorkshire to tackle traders in illicit tobacco and all complaints and intelligence received will be followed up.”

Healthwatch found that when they visited the department, the majority

of patients they spoke to had come to A&E because they had been referred there from another service such as NHS 111 or their GP surgery. “Very few people we spoke to could be said to be using A&E ‘inappropriately’ as most had sought advice before attending, or they had an emergency situation like a road accident or had been brought by ambulance because of a suspected heart attack,” said Andrew Jones. Healthwatch shared their findings with the Trust earlier this year, and they welcomed the insights which will help them in ongoing plans to improve the Accident and Emergency Department. “We’re pleased that the Trust is

COMMUNITY: Around 1,000 men joined in the 16th annual NADA march last week through Manningham

Procession of ‘peace, tolerance and respect’

More than 1,000 people lined the streets of Bradford last week for the 16th annual Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA) parade to celebrate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. On Sunday 11th May, Muslims from across the country joined in the colourful procession from the Jamia Masjid Naqshbandia Aslamia Islamic Centre with the route taking place through the heart of Manningham. According to organisers, the aim of the event was to ‘promote community cohesion by showing that Islamic values and principles are compatible with modern contemporary Britain’. The procession finished with a large

Community cohesion parade sees hundreds line Bradford’s streets

gathering outside the Masjid where a special spiritual meditation programme was held in a marquee. Speeches were delivered in both English and Urdu by renowned Islamic Scholars, including Mufti Wajid Iqbal, whilst recitation of Nasheeds (Islamic Songs) and food were served up to all guests. Concluding the day’s events was the traditional delivery of curry to residents in the streets surrounding the mosque which has been done for the past four years since the Masjid opened. NADA secretary, Nazim Ali, explained why it was so important to interact with people of all backgrounds. “Many of the people who live on the streets around the Masjid are of Eastern European origin so by delivering food to these homes we were demonstrating that our event was not only for Muslims but for the whole community,” he said.

“NADA has organised this highly successful annual parade for the last 16 years to spread the message of peace, love and harmony whilst celebrating diversity and actively promoting tolerance.” In addition to the thousand-man march, a simultaneous event for women only was held at the Girlington Community Centre in which almost 500 people attended. Nazim added: “Such events demonstrate the need for greater tolerance and understanding amongst diverse religious groups, particularly as there are so many stereotypes, ignorance and misunderstandings in the media. “Our message is quite clear: our similarities are a source for strength for us all irrespective of whichever faith we follow as we all share the universal principles of love, peace and purity of intention.”

RESPONSE: Salman Malik travelled to Nepal for 12 days to help with the relief efforts following the first earthquake

DANGER: The earthquake caused major damage to buildings across Nepal

Nepal aid worker returns

An aid worker volunteer from Bradford has returned from his latest mission in Nepal, describing the trip as ‘eye-opening’ and one that needs more support from around the world. 28-year-old Salman Malik, travelled out to the earthquake-hit country on 28th April as part of a 12-man convoy from the Humanity First charity. At least 8,000 people died in the 8.2 magnitude quake last month whilst at least 65 others were killed when a second earthquake hit just days later. Mr Malik had undergone disaster response training prior to his departure and says as soon as he got a call asking if he was able to travel, he ‘couldn’t say no’. “I had done all the courses for this type of situation and I knew from previous experiences that Nepal was not a rich country and that they

would not have the resources in place to recover quickly from a disaster of this magnitude,” he explained. “When I was asked about going I didn’t hesitate to say yes because I just wanted to help in whatever way I could. Due to my logistics background I was put in a role to help the medical teams in what was an eyeopening experience.” Working alongside the Ahmadiyya Sangh Nepal charity, Mr Malik’s 12-day expedition involved providing medical assistance to more than 1,000 people in some of the worst affected areas including the villages of Batase and Tinmane. He says he remembers the smell of ‘burning flesh’ as he arrived in the country as the bodies of those who died in the quake were taken to the local temple. “The sights and smells

when we arrived were completely new to me,” Mr Malik explained. “The smell of burning flesh was very noticeable as we drove to our accommodation. “There were people just ‘living in the street’ due to the fear of aftershocks causing further damage to buildings. It was incredible.” He added: “The most common problems I saw in the medical tents were shortness of breath, chronic injures and most of all psychological trauma. People were just too scared to return home.” Mr Malik returned to the UK on 10th April and has continued fundraising for the charity’s earthquake appeal. “My experience out there made me realise the real difference between what we have here and what we take for granted compared to what little people have elsewhere,

regardless of disasters,” he said. “I come from Pakistan myself and have seen people struggle to find shelter and food but it was a new experience in Nepal. “To see the smiles of children and their parents after they received their treatment or just assurances from us put everything into perspective.” Salman says his and the charity’s long term vision is to next identify a number of schools which have suffered bad damage from the earthquake and help rebuild the facilities. The Humanity First team are still working on the ground in Nepal. If you would like to make a donation to the cause please visit uk.humanityfirst.org or text NEPA60 £10 to 70070 to donate £10.

British Medical Journal Awards acknowledge local researcher COMMENDED: Dr Mahendra Patel was one member of the SAHF team whose campaigning work on raising awareness of diabetes in the UK’s Asian communities, was awarded last week

Pioneering campaign takes diabetes awareness to the big screen known to be most prevalent. This schedule – plus a portfolio of other work – helped to secure the BMJ award. The material produced by SAHF to back up its message has included a DVD entitled Sweet Talk, which uses Bollywood techniques and imagery to dramatise the risks run by a central character, a middle-aged, overweight man who smokes and eats to excess. A more recent focus has been on special presentations by the SAHF diabetes team – including Dr Patel – that have taken place in venues such as community centres and places of worship. Using a variety of visual aids and printed material, the campaigners have put over their message about how lifestyle WINNERS: The SAHF team collected their Diabetes Team of the changes can cut the Year award at the prestigious British Medical Journal Awards risks of diabetes whilst also exposing several

A Health education team, which included a local researcher and academic from West Yorkshire, received a major national award last week for their work in raising awareness of diabetes amongst UK Asians. At the 2015 British Medical Journal Awards, the trophy for ‘Diabetes Team of the Year’ went to the South Asian Health Foundation

(SAHF) of which University of Huddersfield researcher, Dr Mahendra is a member. He joined three of his colleagues to collect their prize at a London ceremony after their campaign, which involved a speciallyproduced Bollywood-style movie, wowed the judges. During 2014, the SAHF’s diabetes campaigners delivered 11 grassroots education campaigns to a diversity of South Asian communities in seven UK cities where diabetes is

myths and misconceptions about the disease and treatments. When they announced that Dr Patel – who is Chair of the South Asian Health Foundation’s Cardiovascular Disease Working Group – and his SAHF colleagues had been awarded the Diabetes Team of the Year title, the judges said: “In early 2014, the South Asian Health Foundation extended its South Asian Community Health Education and Empowerment programme to include South Asians diagnosed with diabetes. “This impressive project targeted a high-risk population in seven major cities in the UK and is breaking down cultural barriers by taking important diabetes education out into the communities – to schools,

community centres and places of worship, embedding health ambassadors in schools and recruiting local pharmacists as champions. They are achieving powerful attitudinal changes in areas of significant educational need.” Dr Patel stresses that a ‘one size fits all’ approach would not work for the UK’s highly-diverse population of South Asian origin, which includes Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan communities, with their different cultural, religious and dietary traditions. The health advice must be tailored accordingly, and issues that have arisen include whether or not medication can be taken during periods of fasting.

ACHIEVEMENT: Hishaam Mohammed (middle) receives his Volunteer of the Year award from (l-r) West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson; Temporary Chief Constable, Dee Collins; Bradford District Chief Superintendent, Simon Atkin; and Gary Verity, Chief Executive of ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’

Voluntarily protecting the streets 18-year-old clinches police ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award

A teenager from Bradford, who gives up his own time every week to help fight crime in the city, has been commended with a prestigious accolade at the annual West Yorkshire Policing Awards. 18-year-old Hishaam Mohammed, from Bradford, may currently be studying ICT and Business at Bradford College yet it is in his position as a police support volunteer that he most feels at home. Last week, the determined student picked up the ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award from Chief Superintendent Simon Atkin, for his continued support to officers in Bradford. From March 2014 through to the end of last year, Hishaam attended 40 events, totalling 183 hours of voluntary work and was selected as one of three finalists for the awards ceremony. Upon hearing his name called out, he says it was a ‘big surprise’ and one that will only motivate him to continue the work. “When I first got a call to say I had been nominated I was in college and I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “On the night of the awards there were two other volunteers as well who had done some amazing work so I was sure I wouldn’t win. “When they read out my name it came as a big surprise but it was a great feeling.”

Keeping it in the family New head boy to follow in brother’s footsteps

The appointment of new head boys and head girls is an annual tradition at many schools and at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) there is a familiar feeling around their latest appointment. Abhijeet Oswal, from Roundhay, will be following in his brother Abhishek’s footsteps as he takes on the role of head boy from September. Abhishek had previously held the role in 2010/11 and is now studying medicine at Oxford University. His younger brother, who moves into Year 13 in the next academic year, says the family history did play a role in him opting to run for the position. “I’ve wanted to be head boy since my brother held the position when I was in Year 8,” he said. “Seeing what he did and how he enjoyed the role meant I wanted to achieve it too.” Currently studying for AS-levels in maths and further maths, physics, economics and history, Abhijeet hopes to read economics and management at university. A keen rugby player, he was a member of GSAL’s First XV team which reached the final of a new national competition, the Champions Trophy, last November.

Their responsibilities will include representing the school on formal occasions, liaising on behalf of fellow students with senior staff, building links between Senior School and younger age groups and coordinating student volunteers for open days and tours. They were appointed through a demanding selection process - after securing nomination, they had to produce a manifesto and win the votes of staff and fellow sixth form students, before a final interview with members of the senior management team.

HISTORY: Abhijeet Oswal will become head boy in September, a role his older brother, Abhishek, held in 2010/11

He has enthusiastically embraced the extracurricular opportunities on offer at school, taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, Leeds Enterprise Advisory Programme (LEAP), the scouts and debating, as well as volunteering in Junior School. He added: “All the extracurricular activities help us develop the skills to do these new roles well. “There are leadership opportunities in every activity you do, and the house system at our school helps you get to know people in all year groups and take responsibility for activities earlier on in your school career. “We’re part of a student leadership team that’s much bigger than just the four of us, working together with student heads of faith, house captains and their deputies.” Joining Abhijeet as members of the student LEADERS: The two head boys and two head girls at GSAL leadership team are Frances from September will be (l-r) Matthew Vautrey, Frances Pye, Pye, Libby Munro and Matthew Vautrey, all currently Libby Munro and Abhijeet Oswal in lower sixth.

Riding into new markets Sahara ‘not buying’ Grosvenor House Troubled conglomerate Sahara, the founder of which has been held in a jail for more than a year, has dismissed media reports saying it is participating in an auction of the iconic Grosvenor House hotel in London as ‘incorrect and speculative’. Sahara bought the Grosvenor in 2010 but the hotel was placed in administration and put up for sale in March after Bank of China's loan on the 494-room property, operated by Marriott International, was declared in default. The media this week cited unnamed sources as saying that Sahara, through one of its units, Aamby Valley City Mauritius, was bidding to buy back the hotel.

ON THE MOVE: Royal Enfield will be expanding their markets in Southeast Asia and North America this year

The iconic motorbike manufacturers, Royal Enfield, are set to drive into new markets this year as they take their famed products to Latin America and Southeast Asia. Speaking to news agency Reuters, CEO Siddhartha Lal said the company, owned by India’s Eicher Motors, will be expanding operations abroad to boost local sales networks and could even consider setting up production units in the future. The company’s most famous model is the iconic Bullet Bike and is one of the world’s oldest bike manufacturers. “Whatever it takes, in our belief, to become

successful in that market we will do,” Lal told Reuters at the group's newly-opened retail store in New Delhi. “We want to take a strategic approach which is not about shipping a few motorcycles from here. It is about being a significant player in that market,” he said, without detailing how much the company will invest. Royal Enfield plans to spend more than £50billion in 2015 on its global expansion, building two new technology centres, of which one is in Britain, and increasing its Indian production capacity by 50 per cent to 450,000 vehicles.

“We would hereby like to clarify that Sahara or any of its group companies is not participating in any such re-auctioning,” Sahara said in a statement on Thursday. Sahara founder Subrata Roy was arrested in March last year after the company failed to comply with a court order to refund money it had raised from millions of small investors by selling them bonds later ruled to be illegal. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Supreme Court have estimated that Sahara owes as much as $4.5billion to the bond investors, but Sahara says it has repaid 95 percent of the amount due.

he duty of care owed by surveyors/valuers to their clients was recently considered by the High Court in the case of Freemont (Denbigh) Limited –v- Knight Frank LLP. The case involved a valuer employed by Knight Frank who had been instructed by Freemont to provide a valuation of a plot of land for the purposes of securing finance to develop the land. Knight Frank had been instructed in August 2006 to value development land for lending purposes. Knight Frank valued the land at £17million with the benefit of outline planning permission and £18.7million with detailed planning consent. Subsequently Freemont received offers from other developers to purchase the land for £10.45m and for £11.1m. However, Freemont rejected both of these offers on the basis that they were far below the valuation which it had received from Knight Frank. Outline planning permission was later granted but detailed planning permission was never obtained and the site was not developed. The listed buildings on the land had fallen into such disrepair that the costs of reinstatement was so high that the whole land was considered to be worthless

by Freemont. Freemont subsequently sued Knight Frank and alleged that it had relied on their valuation in deciding whether or not to accept the offers from the developers which it had received. Because none of those offers had matched the level of Knight Frank’s original valuation, they had been rejected. Freemont claimed that Knight Frank had been negligent in overvaluing the land and that the loss in value of the land was caused by that negligence. Freemont claimed for the loss of profit which it had suffered by not accepting the offers which it had received for the land, damages for all subsequent marketing costs and the costs of selling the land. It also claimed, in the alternative, for the loss of chance of selling the land. However, the Court dismissed Freemont’s claim and found that the duty of care owed by a valuer to the land owner extended only to producing the valuation for the bank’s consideration. The duty of care was limited to the purposes for which the report was prepared and Knight Frank’s terms of retainer stated clearly that the report was specifically for the purpose of obtaining financing and that it was not provided for Freemont

to rely on when forming its development plans in the future. There was no contractual basis for allowing the land owner to rely on the report for any other purpose. The Court found that Knight Frank had fulfilled its duty of care to give a fair valuation of the land for Freemont’s purposes of obtaining finance. Freemont was not entitled to claim against Knight Frank for losses suffered as a consequence of relying on the report for other purposes. The Court refused to extend that duty beyond the valuer’s contractual duties. This case is good news for surveyors and professional indemnity insurers as it shows that surveyors who provide valuations for lending purposes cannot be held responsible for investment losses by lenders who rely on the valuation for other purposes. The case also highlights the need to establish the scope of a retainer at the outset and to record clearly in the contractual documentation the purpose for which a report is being provided and any limits of the retainer. At Blacks we can assist with drawing up contractual documentation as well as advising on any professional negligence dispute which you may have.

BRAGGING: Addil Haroon’s irresponsible high-speed driving killed a 25-year-old man

Bragging death crash teen in 142mph Snapchat boast A 19-year-old speed-freak bragged about clocking 142mph on a motorway hours before he sped through a red light and killed another driver. Addil Haroon took a photo of his Audi A6's speedometer while racing at double the speed limit on the M62 in November last year. He then sent it to a friend via Snapchat, saying: "Leeds to Rochdale 11mins catch me." In the early hours of the next day, the teenager drove the hire

car through a red light in Bury Road, Rochdale, at more than 80mph. He smashed into an Audi A5 with such force the vehicle was cut in half. The 25-year-old driver, Joseph Brown-Lartey, died instantly from multiple injuries. Experienced traffic officers said it was the worst accident scene they had dealt with. Haroon, from Essex Street, Rochdale, was jailed at Manchester Minshull Street Crown for six years on Thursday 28th May. He had pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to causing death by dangerous driving and driving

without a licence or insurance. Sergeant Paul Higgins, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "Haroon's dangerous behaviour put innocent members of the public at risk and his irresponsible actions have devastated a family. "He was uninsured, unlicensed and driving dangerously but he paid no heed and sadly Joseph paid the price for this. "Many of the experienced traffic officers who were first on the scene described the collision scene as the worst they've witnessed and it will stay with them throughout their time in the force. "Haroon is off the road and behind bars and I hope today's sentence goes some small way to bring some closure for the family." Following his death, Mr BrownLartey's parents issued a statement, saying their ‘lives will never be the same again’. "Joseph is a great son, brother and friend to many people with his whole future ahead of him which has been tragically and suddenly taken away from us far too soon," they said. "He will be sadly missed but never forgotten."

Scientists identify key to preventing secondary cancers

Leading scientists from the University of Sheffield and University of Copenhagen have identified a possible key to preventing secondary cancers in breast cancer patients, after discovering an enzyme which enhances the spread of the disease. Secondary (metastatic) breast cancer is the main cause of the 12,000 deaths which occur from breast cancer in the UK every year. The most common site for the disease to spread is the bone – occurring in around 85 per cent of secondary breast cancer patients. The new research, which was conducted at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, found that the enzyme LysYl Oxidase (LOX) released from the primary tumour causes holes in bone and prepares the bone for the future arrival of cancer cells. The findings suggest that identifying LOX in oestrogen receptor negative (ER negative) breast cancer patients early, could allow doctors to block the enzyme’s activity, preventing bone damage and the spread of tumour cells to the bone (metastasis), halting the progression of the disease. The researchers also showed that treatment with bisphosphonate, an existing class of drug which prevents the loss of bone mass and is already used to treat diseases such as osteoporosis, was able to prevent the changes in the bone and the spread of the disease in mice. The pioneering research, co-led

by Dr Alison Gartland at the University of Sheffield’s Department of Human Metabolism, could lead to a better prognosis for cancer patients in the longer term. Dr Gartland said: “This is important progress in the fight against breast cancer metastasis and these findings could lead to new treatments to stop secondary breast tumours growing in the bone, increasing the chances of survival for thousands of patients. “We are really excited about our results that show breast cancer tumours send out signals to destroy the bone before cancer cells get there in order to prepare the bone for the cancer cells’ arrival.

Copenhagen, said: “Once cancer spreads to the bone it is very difficult to treat. Our research has shed light on the way breast cancer cells prime the bone so it is ready for their arrival. If we were able to block this process and translate our work to the clinic, we could stop breast cancer in its tracks thereby extending patients’ lives.” Katherine Woods, Senior Research Communications Manager at Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: “The reality of living with secondary breast cancer in the bone is a stark one, which leaves many women with bone pain and fractures that need extensive surgery just when they

“This is important progress in the fight against breast cancer metastasis and these findings could lead to new treatments to stop secondary breast tumours growing in the bone, increasing the chances of survival for thousands of patients.” “The next step is to find out exactly how the tumour secreted LOX interacts with bone cells to be able to develop new drugs to stop the formation of the bone lesions and cancer metastasis. This could also have implications for how we treat other bone diseases too.” Study co-leader Dr Janine Erler, formerly Team Leader in Cancer Biology at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, who now is Associate Professor at the Biotech Research & Innovation Centre (BRIC) at the University of

16-year-old boy arrested over murder of woman in Burka MURDERED: Two separate killings last year of Nahid Almanea and James Attfield have the similar killer profiling

A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named, has been arrested over the murder of a 31-year-old woman in a Burka and a young dad. The teenager was apprehended on the Salary Brook Trail in Colchester on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. He was walking along the same trail where Saudi student Nahid Almanea was stabbed to death in June 2014. Essex Police said he had now been arrested on suspicion of the murder of Ms Almanea and that of a young father, James

Attfield, who died after being stabbed more than 100 times in a park in the town in March last year. The teenager is being held in custody at Colchester police station. The two deaths prompted fears that a killer was randomly targeting members of the public, after officers said there were ‘striking similarities’ in how they were murdered but nothing to link the two victims. Mr Attfield, who had a brain injury after being hit by a car four years before

his death, was found fighting for his life in the town’s Castle Park on 29th March last year. He died later in hospital. Ms Almanea was walking to lectures at the University of Essex, when she was murdered on the Salary Brook Trail on 17th June. Speaking at the time, Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Worron said a criminal profiler had assessed both cases. He added: “The

circumstances of both crimes mean that we must consider the possibility that the same killer or killers are responsible. “We are continuing to explore this line of inquiry, along with many others, and both investigations are being continually resourced and are receiving equal precedence.” Anyone with information should contact Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“Paracetamol Challenge”

Police and schools warn parents and pupils over latest “dangerous” social media craze DANGEROUS: The 'Paracetamol Challenge' has spread via Facebook and Instagram

National Parents are being warned of dangers of a new craze amongst young people termed as the “Paracetamol Challenge”, which has spread via Facebook and Instagram. Children are risking their lives in a new social media craze involving the abuse of over-the-counter paracetamol. In large doses, paracetamol causes a slow and painful death, where victims wake up after overdosing with their livers already irrevocably destroyed, dying hours or days later. The dangerous 'Paracetamol Challenge' appears to have spread via Facebook and Instagram, and encourages youngsters to take multiple painkillers. Police and schools have warned parents and pupils after the craze started in Ayrshire, Scotland, where a teenager was reportedly hospitalised. Alan Ward, head of schools at East Ayrshire Council, said the craze is 'a matter of great concern'. Mr Ward, who was first contacted by police in March said: “We are urging parents to talk to their children

57

about the potential dangers of taking paracetamol and to discourage their children from engaging in any online activity in support of this dangerous craze. “The challenge results in young people daring each other, through Instagram and Facebook, to take excessive amounts of paracetamol and this is a matter of great concern.” Elsewhere, the craze has seen a grieving mother speak out against the dangers of excessive paracetamol consumption. Mandy Yousaf's daughter Charlotte, 19, lost her life after overdosing on the pills following a split from her partner in 2011. Charlotte was rushed to hospital in Blackpool, Lancs, after collapsing days after taking the tablets, but died the next day. Mrs Yousaf, 48, has warned other teens 'not to end up like my daughter'. She said: “Now you see teenagers egging each other on, and it's a peer pressure thing where they clearly don't know what they're doing. “But it is not just teenagers we need to tell about this - it's teachers. It's parents. Everyone.” If you feel affected by any of the issues in this story or want to speak to someone in confidence, contact The Samaritans.

Big kick-off One of the country’s biggest mela’s, renowned for it’s sensational desi music line-ups, celebrity performances, mouthwatering South Asian foods, mix of fashion, arts, crafts and much more, launched with a bang this week in Birmingham. To mark the launch, Dhol drummers and dancers gave a sensational performance in Victoria Square, providing a teaser of the vibrant and colourful event to come. The free family festival, now in it’s 15th year, takes place at the Cannon Hill Park on 16th June. This year’s Mela has been by one of organised Birmingham’s most prominent businesses - Big John’s, who say they are honoured to be given the opportunity to be the proud organisers of the Birmingham Mela. The popular event which draws in some 40,000 people has become a ‘must-attend’ date in the calendar and sees Big John’s involvement for the second year running, not only in the sponsorship but in the organisation of the event. Snooker club loses licence over

sex and drug abuse claims A snooker club in Birmingham run by two Asian brother-in-laws has had it licence shredded following allegations of the site being used for child sexual exploitation and drug-dealing. Birmingham Council revoked the Big Break Snooker Club’s licence following an uncontested hearing on 20th May. Big Break managers, Qumar Zaman and Hissam Khaliq, did not attend or present any evidence at the hearing. The club has so far been unavailable for comment. The venue has also seen numerous reports of robberies and thefts. Police said a number of continuing investigations were connected to the Big Break Snooker Club in Coventry Street, Digbeth. Officers found weapons, drugs and used condoms at the Coventry Street club during a raid in March. The city council's licensing committee heard evidence of ‘widespread’ drug use and was told that rooms had been used to abuse children. At the time, Inspector Will It voluntarily closed its doors in March and on 1st May West O'Connor said inquiries had shown Midlands Police was granted a a ‘pattern of young women or girls three-month closure order at the entering the club with older men’. He said: “Information we city's magistrates' court.

uncovered suggests the girls had gone on to spend time in private rooms with the men where they were exposed to alcohol and drugs and groomed for sexual activity.”

Inspector O'Connor said during a visit by officers in March known offenders were discovered near the club's entrance, as well as ‘bags containing heroin and crack cocaine

on a sofa in one of the rooms, used condoms, a lock-knife and a hammer lying around’. He said the evidence suggested the venue was not being used as a snooker club, but as ‘a place for young men to meet, use and supply drugs, commit crime and engage in sexual activity’. Birmingham City Council's licensing committee also heard evidence of assaults by customers in the nearby area, as well as breaches of fire and smoking regulations. Chris Neville, head of licensing, said three girls who were reported missing were found at the club on separate occasions, while a Facebook post by another girl linked her with the property. He said while no sexual activity was witnessed by officers, the overall evidence presented outlined a ‘den of iniquity’. Mr Neville said Wednesday's licensing review was automatically triggered by the closure order granted to officers at the beginning of the month. The committee agreed to revoke the club's licence to ‘promote the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, and the protection of children from harm’.

Remains found at crash site

Authorities have found DNA evidence that five more people may have been on board a US military helicopter that crashed during a humanitarian relief mission after the Nepal earthquake, a US military spokesman said. Investigators were exploring the possibility that the five new suspected victims of the crash were villagers picked up by the helicopter during its relief mission, a Nepali army spokesman said. The helicopter and its crew were part of the large

international aid effort after a massive earthquake and major aftershock struck Nepal on 25th April and 12th May, killing more than 8,600 people and making hundreds of thousands homeless. Six US Marines and two Nepali soldiers are known to have died in the crash, the cause of which has yet to be determined. Earlier this week, Nepalese media reported that five people from devastated villages in Dolakha district had gone missing after boarding an unidentified aid helicopter.

Blair steps down

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is standing down as the Quartet representative in the Middle East, the organisation said on Wednesday, after eight years struggling to break ground in peacemaking between Israel and the Palestinians. Officials close to the Quartet of the United States, European Union, United Nations and Russia, said Blair, 62, would continue to play an informal role in trying to forge a two-state solution between the Palestinians

US Metro blocks Prophet Muhammad subway cartoon Subway train officials in Washington DC have blocked plans by an American free speech pressure group to have a controversial cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad displayed on the underground rail services. The American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) wanted to display the cartoon, which won first prize at an event in Texas. Washington transport authorities have banned political, religious and advocacy adverts on the subway. The transport authority in the US capital voted unanimously to suspend advertisements it describes as ‘issue-oriented’. AFDI founder Pamela Geller strongly criticised the decision to ban the advert, describing it as an attack on freedom of speech. Ms Geller commented on her website that: “Rewarding terror with submission is defeat, absolute and complete defeat. “These cowards may claim that they are making people safer, but I submit to you the opposite. They are making it far more dangerous for Americans everywhere.” The advert calls for Americans

Sikh Man who removed turban to help injured child gets huge public support

Harman Singh is seen with his turban unwrapped, helping six-year-old Daejon Pahia who was hit by a car

Kindness rewarded The hero Sikh who broke religious protocol and removed his turban to help an injured boy has been rewarded for his valiant actions by total strangers. Harman Singh was in his Auckland home when he heard screeching tyres and ran

outside to find five-year-old Daejon Pahia lying in the road. Singh removed his turban to stem the bleeding from Daejon’s head and helped comfort the boy until an ambulance arrived. When interviews with Singh were broadcast people noticed his sparse apartment. Inspired by concerned comments from viewers, the staff at the Good News Network got in touch with a local furniture store owner and surprised Singh with a truckload of new furniture for his apartment. Singh said, through tears: “This the biggest surprise of my life.” Normally, turbans are only removed in intimate circumstances such as bathing the head or washing the hair, but the 22year-old told the newspaper: “I wasn’t thinking about the turban. I was thinking about the accident and I just thought ‘He needs something on his head because he’s bleeding.’ That’s my job to help. “And I think anyone else would have done the same as me.” Little Daejon suffered a serious head injury and lacerations to his kidneys after he was hit by a four-wheel drive on his way to school. Daejon’s mother Shiralee said she was grateful for Singh’s actions and that her son had been asking about those who helped him.

Hero Aussie punched after stepping in to stop racist rant at Muslim women Australian Police said officers were investigating an incident in which a man in was allegedly punched in the face after standing up for three Muslim women on a train in Melbourne. Police are investigating the incident that began with two men in fluorescent orange tops, most probably tradesmen, verbally abusing a group of women for wearing headscarves. be wearing that s*** in Australia.” Jason Cias, 36, claims an argument ensued, during which the older of the women spoke in Arabic to try and calm things down. The men then said: “You shouldn’t be speaking that s*** in Australia.” As the women got off the train, one of the men shouted “I'll f***ing smash you,” which prompted Mr Cias to intervene.

Mr Cias told The Age: “I said to the guy, ‘Mate, they’re women’. The implication there was you don't threaten people, particularly women.” Mr Cias was told to mind his own business before one of the assailant's got to his feet and allegedly punched him in the left cheek, after which there was a short scuffle caught on camera by onlookers. Pictures and video evidence were passed to police.

Mr Cias said the incident had left him with a “pretty good black eye” but insisted he’d do the same again. “If anything I wish I had intervened earlier,” he said. “Whether it's Islamic women or whoever, it's just not right they can abuse people like that,” Mr Cias said. “No one should be doing that to anyone regardless of race or gender or religious creed.”

• INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS INVESTIGATION: Pakistan raids software company said to market fake degrees as its CEO Shoaib Shaikh is questioned by police

Interior ministry registers a criminal case against software firm accused of faking diplomas

Pakistan seeks FBI help Pakistan has asked US authorities to help it investigate Axact, a software firm accused of earning millions of dollars from the international sale of bogus university degrees online, officials said on Wednesday. Pakistani police also arrested the head of Axact in the early hours of Wednesday following a raid on the company's diploma printing operations, and registered a criminal case against him, investigators said. The interior ministry wrote to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Tuesday seeking assistance. Officials said a letter had been sent to the US State Department. The request came days after a New York Times article said that Axact had run a global network of fake online universities that manipulated customers and generated tens of millions of dollars in estimated revenue annually by selling bogus diplomas. Axact has denied the allegations, calling them ‘baseless’. A senior interior ministry official, who did not wish to be named, said: "This is a scam whose victims are mostly people outside of Pakistan, in the US, UK and the Middle East. "It was inevitable for the FBI to get involved in a scam in which so many Americans have allegedly been cheated. We will also reach out to Interpol in the coming days." The allegations, which have dominated Pakistani headlines in recent days, are an embarrassment for a government already under pressure from a faltering economy, with people questioning why regulators

appeared to be wrong footed. Officials from Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) questioned Axact's CEO Shoaib Shaikh for several hours on Tuesday 26th May in the southern port city of Karachi, where the company is based. In scenes shown live on television overnight, Shaikh led investigators to a company office piled high with blank degrees from fake colleges and certificates appearing to bear the signature of US. Secretary of State John Kerry. On Wednesday afternoon he was presented before a court in handcuffs. Earlier in the week, authorities had sealed several Axact offices across Pakistan and confiscated documents and computers. Shaikh has released a series of videotaped "appeals" to the public to

protest over the crackdown on Axact. "In the last week there has been a conspiracy to shut down Axact; because of this the company that contributes to 65 percent of Pakistan's IT exports has been reduced to zero," Shaikh said in a message recorded shortly before he was taken in for questioning. "I want to say this clearly: this is just a conspiracy. For God's sake, come out on the streets against this conspiracy." According to Shaikh, a campaign against Axact has been led by Pakistani media moguls who felt threatened by Bol, a new television network that Axact was setting up. In the last two years, Shaikh has poached several senior journalists from rival networks. Some of the most prominent have resigned in the wake of the allegations against Axact.

Pakistan hangs plane hijackers Pakistan has hanged three Baloch insurgents, 17 years after they hijacked a passenger plane with 30 people on board. The men were executed at jails in Karachi and Hyderabad. They hijacked a Pakistan International Airlines flight in May 1998 and ordered the pilot to fly to India but the plane was diverted and stormed by troops. Pakistan has put at least 130 people to death since lifting a moratorium on executions in December. The men - Shabbir Rind, Shahsawar Baloch and Sabir Rind - were members of the left-wing Baloch Students' Organisation (BSO), who were demanding more resources, such as gas and electricity, for their region. They were sentenced to be executed in October 1998 but remained on death row until a moratorium on executions was lifted after the Peshawar school massacre. Four other men were hanged on Thursday at jails across the country. They were convicted in murder cases and were not linked to the hijackers. PIA flight 554 took off from Turbat, in the south of Balochistan, and was heading for Karachi when the attackers boarded during a stop-over in Gwadar. They commandeered the

Fokker shortly after take-off, and demanded the captain fly directly to Delhi. He told them there was not enough fuel, but agreed to bring the plane as far as Bhuj, an airstrip in Gujrat, India. Instead, he landed in Hyderabad where security forces were waiting to arrest them.

In Karachi reports say that in order to let the hijackers think they were in India, authorities banned the use of loudspeakers in mosques around the airport. Troops then stormed the plane and overpowered the hijackers. Passengers and crew were unharmed.

Entertainment THE LATEST ENTERTAINMENT AND CELEBRITY NEWS FROM BOLLYWOOD & HOLLYWOOD According to a newly released report, an activist in India has claimed that the Maharashtra government's Home and Law & Judiciary departments do not have any records pertaining to the Salman Khan accident case on 28th September 2002. A Right To Information (RTI) query by Mansoor Darvesh has revealed that the files were destroyed on 21st June 2012 by a fierce fire that engulfed Mantralaya, the state government headquarters in South Mumbai. Quoting the activist, the report stated that the individual had filed the RTI query to the two departments seeking information on the total number of counsels, lawyers, solicitors, legal advisors, public prosecutors, etc. engaged and appointed by the state government to fight the case. He had even asked for the total expenses incurred by the state on the Salman Khan case, from the start in 2002 till the judgement by the Mumbai sessions court on 6th May this year. The report further stated that on the activist's query, the government responded with partial information stating that the documents related to the case were lost in the 2012 fire and "therefore, cannot be made available." After being convicted, Salman is currently out on bail and has recently sought permission to fly abroad. Now, we’re no legal experts, but we’re guessing the destruction of those all important records is conveniently quite lucky for Sallu.

• Clean, tone, exfoliate and moisturize your skin! The idea is to remove dead skin caused by the lack of water intake, restore the skin’s natural mineral levels and balance the skin’s oil production. • Fasting dehydrates the skin so it’s very important to make sure that you rehydrate after iftar.

• We recommend that between iftar and suhoor you drink at least eight glasses of water in addition to any other fluids.

Fact:The human body only absorbs 50 to 60 per cent of fruit juice, and just 20 to 30 percent of sodas.

• Eat healthy! There are many foods that can repair dehydrated skin, such as cashews or almonds which are packed with healthy fibers, fatty acids and proteins which will maintain your skin's glow.

• Fruits such as strawberries and blueberries are high in anti-oxidants, which are known for their positive effect on healthy skin. Dates are also a great source of anti-oxidants, vitamin A, iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium that all promote optimum skin health. Apricots aid in the digestion process. Blory proves that age is just a number

May 2015 - 4th Edition

As the bass drops, a silky, honeyed voice trickles over the backing track. The talent is obvious and the song is infectious; it can be easily attributed to any one of the popular female singers in the industry today. But proving that age really is just a number, brand new artist Blory is about to burst onto the music scene with her explosive new song, 'Holle Holle'. Entering the industry in her fifties, Blory’s debut track is unexpected; taking a traditional Punjabi folk song, underpinning it with hip hop undertones and employing the rap talents of Shortie, making Holle Holle a sure-fire hit. Blory’s voice is velvet as it blends into the catchy backing track produced for her by music mogul Dr Zeus. A match made in heaven with the result of an addictive track with a distinct hip-hop vibe, typically synonymous with Zeus himself as he expertly blends urban with traditional. Brimming

with quiet energy and steely determination, Blory is truly an inspiration to the next generation. Born to an accomplished singer, songwriter and composer, the late Sardar Gursharan Singh Matwala, music is in Blory’s blood. A student of Carmel Convent School, Blory studied Classical Vocal Music and Political Sciences at Punjab University Chandigarh. Blory’s music career took a backseat when marriage, children and a successful business came first. Realising now is the time to pursue her dreams, nothing is holding her back. With a view to become the next big thing in Bollywood playback, Blory’s stunning vocals will certainly capture the hearts of any audience. Holle Holle releases on 4th June 2015 and will be available to pre-order from 28th May.

This tough drama is set in 1960s Bombay, and explores the lives of boxer Johnny Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor) and aspiring jazz singer Rosie (Anushka Sharma). Bollywood megastars Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma make for dynamic leads and there's support from the likes of Kay Kay Menon, Manish Choudhary and Raveena Tandon. Four years after Manu met and wed Tanu in the hit original film (titled, unsurprisingly, Tanu Weds Manu), the lovable couple are back. Not only are the original stars back, with Kangana Ranaut as Tanuja 'Tanu' Trivedi and Madhavan as Manoj 'Manu' Sharma, but the original film's director,

Kangana Ranaut and R Madhavan are reprising their quirky-sweet roles in this

Amid the audacious design studies and automotive beauties from a bygone era gathered at the 2015 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, the BMW Group presented its new BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage and in the process makes a pretty formidable statement of its own. This model is the BMW Design Team's tribute to the 3.0 CSL, a timeless classic and iconic BMW Coupé from the 1970s. "CSL" stands for "Coupé Sport Leichtbau" (coupé, sport, lightweight). With its aluminium bonnet, boot and wings, Plexiglas windows and equipment rigorously pared down to the bare essentials, the old BMW 3.0 CSL tipped the scales around 200 kg lighter than its sibling model, the BMW 3.0 CS. Unsurprisingly, then, it was predestined for a career on the race track. Whereas the material of choice in the 1970s was aluminium, today carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) - offers the optimum weight-to-strength ratio. These high-strength fibres are even lighter and stronger than aluminium. And the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage makes generous use of the high-tech composite,

reinterpreting the concept of lightweight design for the modern age. Wherever CFRP is used, it is also visible - rendering the lightweight design principle tangible both inside and out. Karim Habib, Head of BMW Design, explains the thinking behind the design of the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage: "For BMW designers like us, the BMW 3.0 CSL is a style icon. “Its combination of racing genes and elegance generates an engaging aesthetic that continues to win hearts even today. The BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage celebrates many of those characteristic features, but without copying them. Indeed, some of the parallels are not immediately obvious. We wanted people to sense the family resemblance rather than see it straight off." The BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage is a vision of pure athleticism: the elongated body is set off by distinctive air deflectors, powerful wheel arches and prominent spoilers to the roof and tail. Despite its size, the aerodynamic elements are key in enabling air to flow optimally along the sides of the vehicle. The front air deflector

serves to vent the engine compartment, while wings over the rear wheels ensure optimum airflow around the vehicle. Small rear-view cameras serve to further reduce aerodynamic drag. The large rear spoiler increases downforce on the driven rear axle and in so doing improves power transmission. The Air Curtain and Air Breather systems guarantee optimum ventilation of the wheel housings. And the sheer selfconfidence and sporting prowess of the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage are perfectly summed up in the original colour of its spiritual predecessor Golf Yellow. Boasting one of the broadest and lowest front ends of any vehicle in the BMW Group, the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage's front exudes pure power and athleticism. At the centre, the characteristic BMW kidney grille stands tall in citation of the more upright styling of the kidney grille of yesteryear. The size and spatial depth of the kidney grille symbolise the output of the powerful six-cylinder in-line engine with eBoost. At the same time, the finely wrought geometry of frame and kidney struts lends the front end an air of quality and

exclusivity. The characteristic foureyed face gives a contemporary, hexagonal interpretation of frontend sportiness. Laser light and LED technology facilitate slender, state-of-the-art lighting graphics, and the flat contours of the headlamps generate that characteristically focused BMW look. A stylised "X" inside the lights divides the lighting

functions and conjures up memories of the X-shaped headlamp stickers once used in long-distance racing. Horizontal LED strips create a visual bond between headlamps and kidney grille while at the same time emphasising the broad, flat impact of the front end.

Continued from page 83 A large carbon-fibre front splitter reduces the gap between road and front end and, in combination with the kidney grille, offers a modern interpretation of the earlier car's highly distinctive shark nose. Two circular openings and a series of elongated slots pay tribute to other elements featured in the earlier car, but offer a new interpretation for the 21st century. The vehicle sides are in elegant counterpoint to the marked athleticism of front and rear. The long wheelbase and elongated bonnet appear to stretch the Hommage's silhouette. A continuous, horizontal line encircles the vehicle by way of paying tribute to a distinctive stylistic feature of the earlier BMW 3.0 CSL: its allround chrome trim. In combination with the black highlight beneath, the continuous line intensifies the flat, elongated appearance of the sides. A particular detail of the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage is the roofline. Consciously subdivided into three, the line recalls the distinctive upper section of the BMW 3.0 CS - one of the first coupés to feature a roof that did not flow into the tail.

Compared with the ubiquitous fastback coupés of the day, this was both an innovation and a design statement, a feature that exuded athleticism and elegance in equal measure. In keeping with the BMW 3.0 CSL, the Hommage features a BMW logo on each of the C-pillars. The all-round shoulderline is also the starting point for the subtle, finely sculpted surfaces of the sides. It follows the development of the shadowy areas behind the front wheel all the way to the lit surfaces above the rear wheels. This interplay between light and shade lends movement and dynamic intensity to the generous surfaces of the vehicle's sides. Dark CFRP areas narrow the gap between the sides and the road, again paying tribute to the consistent lightweight design of the BMW 3.0 CSL. In combination with the black graphic accents, the dark lightweight elements reduce the perceived height of the vehicle and further emphasise its flat silhouette. The black 21" alloy wheels in matt and high-gloss bi-colour versions offer an additional unique highlight. Air control blades in the interstices of the wheel rims, meanwhile, serve to further optimise aerodynamics. As with the front end, the

vehicle's tail is broad and muscular in design. Generous surfaces generate presence, horizontal elements emphasise width. A particular highlight is the styling of the rear lights: an LED strip above the spoiler links the two lights, thus giving the rear end a formal framework. The powerfully sculpted rear apron with CFRP diffusor creates a visual impression of the BMW 3.0 CSL's raw power. Even viewed from above, the BMW 3.0 CSL is extremely dynamic. From kidney grille to headlamps, the bonnet traces a broad "V" - a nostalgic throwback to a distinctive and dynamic element of earlier BMW coupés. Other racing features include bucket seats with high-quality stitching, a sixpoint belt and red anodised safety features such as the outlet nozzles for the extinguishing foam, the fire extinguisher itself, and the two switches on the centre console for the emergency shut-off and fire extinguishing mechanism. The only elements in the rear of the vehicle are two helmets integrated into the transmission tunnel. These

are held in place by a belt when not in use. In the place of a rear seat bench, there are only covers for the eBoost energy accumulators. Special reflector technology in combination with LED strips create an impressive 3D effect on the covers. In its use of cutting-edge materials and detailed solutions, the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage displays technical sophistication and subtlety of form. Meticulously crafted aluminium sleeves add high-quality accents at the junctions between individual structural elements. The door design is as minimalist

as it is expressive: precise, clean surfaces trace an arc rearwards, lending the door element a flowing, dynamic quality. The door openers combine a DTM-style pull strap with the elegant handle-integrated opener of the earlier BMW 3.0 CSL, resulting in the hybrid solution of a nylon pull strap located directly behind the grab handle in the door. As with the interior as a whole, this detail lends expression to the unique character of the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage: a winning combination of lightweight design, athleticism and elegance.

A new era of space New Skoda estate crammed with technology and style

Just months after the debut of the hatchback, comes the new Skoda Superb Estate, which is setting new standards in its segment in terms of space, comfort, safety and connectivity. The new Skoda Superb Estate offers the best interior space in its segment. It is based on MQB technology, with a wheelbase that has been extended by 80mm to 2,841mm. The track width has increased to 1,584mm at the front and to 1,572mm at the rear. The result: even more interior space. In the latest model, driver and passenger have 39mm more elbow room than before. Headroom in the front is 995mm and 1,001mm in the rear – more than in any other model in the segment. Rear knee-room is 157mm – around twice as much as the next-best competitor. Elbow room in the rear has been increased by 70mm. The boot volume also sets a new benchmark: 660 litres, representing an increase of 27 litres compared to the previous model. When the back seats are folded down, the boot volume reaches an impressive 1,950 litres. The design of the new estate makes a powerful statement. The design is more passionate, modern and emotionally charged than ever before. The use of MQB technology also plays a central role when it comes to styling: the longer wheelbase, the shortened front overhang as well as

the widened track provide balanced proportions and create the car’s extremely dynamic and sporty impression. In combination with increased vehicle length, a long wheelbase, shortened front overhang, a sweeping roof line and a steeply angled rear window, the silhouette evolves as a stylistically confident, perfect entity. The new Skoda Superb Estate comes with a veritable armada of new assistance systems for increased safety, eco-friendliness and comfort. Like the Superb hatchback, the new Superb Estate also features Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC). Thanks to the new EU6 engines, the latest edition is more powerful and at the same time up to 30 per cent more efficient than its predecessor. Connectivity reaches a new level of quality: the latest generation of infotainment systems automatically connects to all standard smartphones via SmartLink (MirrorLinkTM, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto technology). The optional high-speed internet connection turns the new Superb Estate into a Skoda hotspot on wheels. In September, the new Skoda Superb Estate will make its motor show debut at the 66th International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany. The new model will be launched into the first markets in the same month, while UK Skoda retailers will start taking orders from June.

2014 Cup Winners: Keighley RZM

Yasmin and Shaid Cup After an action packed weekend of cup contests, only eight teams are now in with a chance of getting their hands on the prestigious Yasmin and Shaid Trophy. Cup holders, Keighley (294-6), opted to bat first in their last-16 tie against the visiting Zulfi (239) and with Gulsharaz Ahmed in red hot form, smashing 136 runs, the cup favourites easily progressed to the quarter finals where they will meet Shimlas. Shimlas (226) meanwhile made much harder work of their encounter with Bradford Moor (220), narrowly clinching victory by just six runs. After electing to bat first, the 2013 cup winners set their opponents a target of 226 and on another day, Moor would have reached the total but this time round, finished agonizingly close. Elsewhere there were also

victories for Flix (231-8) who beat Chach (163) by 68 runs. They will face last season’s runner-ups Onq (138), in their last-eight tie following a low scoring game with Rising Stars (97). Heaton Park (109-4) are through to the final eight after a six wicket victory over Azad (105) and will play Raja (216-6) after their triumph over Karmand (200). Despite a fantastic hat-trick from

Karmand’s Wasim Javed, on a day he took figures of 5-30, his side were unable to progress past the final 16. The final action of the day in the Yasmin and Shaid Cup, saw Whiterose (163-4) win comfortably against Kings XI (158). They will face Section A side, Kashmir Bradford in the quarter’s after they were awarded a bye. This year the Yasmin and Shaid Cup final will be held at

Yorkshire’s renowned Headingley Stadium on Sunday 9th August with free entry available to all. 1 Stop Tyres Shield Two days of action in the 1 Stop Tyres Shield and we are already down to the final four as Section A sides, Friends and Shaheen, prepare to take on Premier opponents, Bhalot and Darulshafa. It the first year of the competition which has been

introduced for teams who are knocked out in the Preliminary Round of the Yasmin and Shaid Cup, and the competitiveness was high across Sunday and Monday. The four semi-finalists each registered big wins over their respected opponents and are set to face off in the next round of cup fixtures on 21st June. The outstanding performance with the ball came in the game between Indus Ghair (160) and Bhalot (164-4), as Zayan Khan picked up figures of 6-29 after an outstanding spell at the wicket. Meanwhile, Darulshafa’s (205) M Azhar smashed 83 runs to lead his side to a 63 run victory over Bradford Royals (142).

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE –

BOXER JAMES DEGALE By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

British Olympic champion James DeGale (21-1 14KO) was in action this past weekend against tough American Andre Dirrell (24-2 16KO). DeGale proved his determination and grit as he boxed Dirrell to get an early lead on the scorecards and then managed to finish the bout strongly to become the first English Olympic gold medal winner to capture a world super middleweight title. During the entertaining boxing bout Dirrell’s hand speed caused DeGale problems as he suffered a cut to his eye, but the English man showed power in his punches as he managed to knock Dirrell down, twice, near the end of the second round. DeGale showed great boxing skill, movement and timing to control the pace of the fight. However Dirrell managed to get back into the fight in the later rounds with great combination punching until Degale finished strongly in the championship rounds. DeGale can now be considered as one of the top super middleweights in the world as he has captured the recognised IBF world championship title and has previously beaten credible opponents like Brandon Gonzales. DeGale eventually got the title fight after becoming the mandatory challenger for the IBF title with champion Carl Froch vacating the title rather than fight him. DeGale has been waiting for his world championship opportunity patiently for a number of years after receiving several

Khalil Alam

career knock backs, lack of boxing opportunity and career disappointments and when the opportunity finally presented itself he manage to capture it convincingly. One of the biggest career disappointments for DeGale was his only defeat against his boxing rival George Groves and DeGale has said he is now ready to fight Groves in a rematch and prove his worthiness as a world champion. He said “there's a massive fight with George Groves down the line, and hopefully he wins that world title in America, but I'm easy. There are so many fights out there. I'm in boxing for the big fights. Obviously I'd like to fight (Groves) again and get the win over him, but let's just let him do his job first and win that WBC title. George Groves will be challenging WBC world champion Badou Jack in the United States and will be the favourite to win the championship. The other potential opponents for DeGale in the near future could be a re-match with Dirrell because their first bout was entertaining to watch and all action from the first bell in a closely contested fight. Andre Ward who is the universally recognised as the best super middleweight in the world even though DeGale does not think Ward will want to fight him. Carl Froch who has already said that he may retire from boxing for good and Gennady Golovkin who is eager to get a meaningful fight by moving up in weight class from middle weight to super middleweight. My initial thoughts about DeGale’s future big fight is that he must take on Groves in a IBF, WBC unification fight possibly at Wembley Stadium in the UK (should Groves win his title bout against Jack). Also in my opinion DeGale taking on the likes of Golovkin or Ward at this stage of his career (newly crowned world champion) will be suicide due to lack of championship experience. I would personally like him to defend his IBF title against some meaningful mandatory contenders before he sets he sights on the potential best in the world.

THE WEEK Onu Miah has had a fortnight to remember. After leading NFA to a surprise victory in the final of the Interleague Cup last week, he rounded off a perfect two weeks with a double in his side’s 2-1 victory over Tetley’s Tino.

Jubodhol 3-0 Hyde Park It was tipped to be a close affair yet a commanding performance from league leaders Jubodhol, earned them all three points on Thursday with a 3-0 victory over fellow high-flyers Hyde Park. Shummel Uddin, Hamid Ali and Shanur Ali all registered their names on the scoresheet as the table toppers put last week’s defeat behind them to thump their opponents in style. Jubodhol have built their success this season from the back, conceding just five goals in their previous 12 games, and despite early pressure from their opponents, managed yet another clean sheet with a resolute performance. The usually prolific Tyler Bussue was denied by some expert shot stopping and a defensive performance reflective of their whole season. At the other end of the pitch, the attackers were certainly doing their part in the title push, with both Alis testing the goalkeeper on a number of occasions. A 3-0 scoreline may be a bit harsh on Hyde Park yet with clinical finishing on show from the forwards, it was a result which was hard fought for. Victory for Jubodhol also lifts them two points clear of second spot, after a narrow defeat for JackHammer at the hand of Al-Aqsa. Aminul Hoque and Izzy Khan picked up the goals to help their side leapfrog their opponents into second spot. There were also victories last week for the newly crowned cup champions, NFA, 2-1 over Tetley’s Tino, as well as Super Six and Old Bacca Boys. Man of the Match - Hamid Ali (Jubodhol)

Janan the ‘King’ of Fashion team up with ‘King’ Khan

The UK’s leading South Asian fashion retailer, Janan Luxury Fashion has proudly teamed up with welterweight boxing ace Amir Khan as he prepares for his New York showdown with Chris Algieri on Friday Night.

The British boxing star and former World Champion from Bolton has attracted leading brands from around the world in the past such as Reebok, Maxi Nutrition and JD Sports. The Bolton boxer is currently in New York ahead of the fight and will be promoting the J. Junaid Jamshed by Janan brand on his clothing ahead of the contest. Janan Luxury Fashion is the only South Asian fashion house to team up with the boxing sensation. Launched in 2011 to offer a unique shopping experience and selling the elite of South Asian fashion and jewellery, Janan Luxury Fashion is today regarded as the leading South Asian fashion house in the UK often attracting celebrities from across the globe. Janan memorably provided the former world boxing champion, Khan, his wedding attire when he married Faryal Makhdoom at a lavish ceremony in New York. True to Amir’s Pakistani roots, the wedding was full of the traditional series of events, including the

joyous dholki event; which amongst the singing and dancing also included adorning Amir’s house with an array of fairy lights. On the wedding day, Khan was dressed in Janan’s intricately embroidered sherwani. His best men wore Janan’s bestselling kurtas and the ladies of the family looked amazing in their stunning outfits, proudly designed by the team at Janan. Khan’s association with Janan was cemented when he developed a close friendship with the owners as he visited the fashion house on a regular basis.
