MUSICIANS: Yellow Dogs band members, from left, Koroush ‘Koory’ Mirzaei, Soroush Farazmand , Siavash Karampour and Arash Farazmand

Musician dropped by band kills three artists and himself By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk A man has shot and killed three musicians before committing suicide because he was distraught at being told to leave a band, police have said. Iranian Ali Akbar Mahammadi Rafie murdered three fellow countrymen in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday apparently after becoming depressed at no longer being part of the Free Keys. Two of the victims Arash Farazmand, 28, and Soroush Farazmand, 27, were brothers and

played in a different band, Yellow Dogs. Drummer Arash and another artist Ali Eskandarian, 35, were killed on the same floor of an apartment, while guitarist Soroush was shot while in bed on a different floor. Ali Eskandarian, shot Musician Ali Eskandarian was also killed (Picture: AP) Yellow Dogs’ manager Ali Salehezadeh said Rafie, 29, had not communicated with the victims for a few months because of a minor dispute. He said: ‘There was a decision not to be around each other.

‘They were never that close to begin with. We thought it was all behind us.’ The killer, who had accessed the flat after lowering himself from a roof, was only stopped when a member of the band he had been kicked out of tried to wrestle his rifle away. The scuffle resulted in a neighbour being shot in the arm. Rafie then made his way back to the roof where he took his own life with a gunshot to the head. The injured neighbour is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

CBI Chief under fire for rape remark

Outraged campaigners demand resignation of head of the India’s Central Bureau of Investigation

CHIEF: Ranjit Sinha is the head of the CBI which tackles corruption and high-profile cases

By Anush Ansari

anush@asianexpress.co.uk Rights campaigners on Wednesday demanded that the head of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) resign after he said during a panel discussion on sports ethics that "if you can't prevent rape, you enjoy it". Ranjit Sinha, director of the CBI, which tackles corruption and other high-profile cases, apologised for the remark, but it was roundly criticised. The issue of sexual violence has been in the spotlight since the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a Delhi bus last year sparked nationwide protests. "Do we have the enforcement?" Sinha said at a CBI

conference in New Delhi on Tuesday about whether sports betting should be legalised. "It is very easy to say that if you can't enforce it, it's like saying if you can't prevent rape, you enjoy it." Sinha sought to explain his comments, which civil campaigners and opposition politicians said risked trivialising rape and raised questions over the CBI's ability to investigate serious sexual assault cases. "I regret any hurt caused," Sinha said in a statement after the original remarks dominated news channels. "I gave my opinion that betting should be legalised and that if the laws cannot be enforced, that does not mean that laws should not be made. "This is as erroneous as saying that if rape is inevitable one should

lie back and enjoy it. I reiterate my deep sense of regard and respect for women and my commitment for gender issues." Kavita Krishnan, an activist with the All India Progressive Women's Association, called for Sinha to step down. "How can he remain the head of India's premier investigation agency?" she said. Nirmala Sitharaman, spokeswoman for the main opposition group, the Bharatiya Janata Party, called the remarks "shocking". "Wonder if his colleagues in the Bureau, his family and wellwishers approve of his view," she wrote on Twitter. There were more than 24,000 reported rapes in India in 2011, but activists say the real number is

many times higher. Following a public outcry over the Delhi attack, India introduced tougher rape laws in March, which include the death penalty for repeat offenders and for those whose victims are left in a "vegetative state". The row comes aat a bad time for the CBI, widely accused of acting as a tool for the government to pressure political rivals. Its very legality is also being challenged in court. The CBI, which is similar to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States, was set up to fight corruption by government employees, but also investigates other important cases, including murder, rape and terrorism.

Celebrating Diwali AsianExpress.co.uk

Mrs Cameron takes to the occasion and wears a sari

ELEGANT: PM’s wife, Samantha Cameron wears a rustcoloured sari at Diwali celebrations earlier this week

By Anush Ansari

anush@asianexpress.co.uk

The Prime Minister announced his third visit to India and praised the contribution made by Britain’s Indian communities at a Diwali celebration at Neasden Temple this week. Both Mr Cameron and wife Samantha attended the temple in north London to mark the festival of light. While the PM donned his normal attire of a day suit, Samantha took to the spirit of the occasion in a rustcoloured sari trimmed with elaborate embroidery, which a Downing Street spokesperson confirmed she had borrowed from a friend. The mother-of-three teamed her sari with a pair of nude-colour pumps, kept jewellery to a minimum, opting only for her wedding ring and a pair of gold earrings, and a poppy. The overall look was simply elegant.

During their visit to the temple, the Camerons were seen taking part in traditional Diwali rituals. After spending several minutes inside the Mandir the couple entered the main prayer hall where they performed the Aarti lights ritual in front of the Annakut – the wall of food inside. Speaking to over 2,000 people in the hall, and to another 2,000 via screens in the rest of the temple, the Prime Minister expressed his and Mrs Cameron’s delight at “being here with you today.” At the celebrations the Prime Minister spoke of the British-Indian community’s role in strengthening the UK’s relationship with India. Praising the BritishIndian community he said: “I see what the BritishIndian community has given to our country. “The entrepreneurs who have enriched us, the

artists who’ve inspired us, the sportsman who’ve entertained us, doctors who’ve helped us and, of course, the fantastic cooks who today have so admirably fed us. Your contribution throughout this country shines out.” He spoke of his two wishes for the New Year – that the British Indian community “help strengthen our relationship with India” and “becomes ever more involved in shaping the life of our country.” Closing his address the Prime Minister wished the audience a happy new year: “From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to wish everyone here - and all Hindus throughout Britain a very Happy Diwali and a prosperous new year. Jai Swami Narayan.” After a meeting with the temple’s board of trustees the Prime Minister and Mrs Cameron bid their farewell and returned to Downing Street.

Fight for lifesaving vaccine goes on

Meningitis Now has vowed to continue its fight for a Meningitis B vaccine, after the Government announced that it’s considering new evidence to support its introduction into the childhood immunisation schedule. Meningitis Now Executive Founder, Steve Dayman, lost his son Spencer to meningitis in 1982. Responding to the news, he said: “We know that the Government wants to bring in vaccines that save lives and we welcome the news that they are looking at more evidence to support its introduction. “But as we head into winter, cases of meningitis will increase and we are concerned that time lost is lives lost. “Meningitis is the disease parents fear most and this vaccine is expected to wipe out at least 73 per cent of the most common form of bacterial meningitis in the UK. We launched our Beat it Now campaign earlier this year to bring in the vaccine as soon as possible. “We know there is strong public support and we are urging everyone to sign our campaign petition now and to urge the government to introduce this new vaccine through the NHS without further delay.” The Meningitis B vaccine was licensed for use in the UK in January, but in July the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) published a statement saying that evidence was insufficient to substantiate its costeffectiveness. The charity was asked to comment and responded with its own detailed recommendations. This latest update shows that they are considering additional evidence and expect to report again in February 2014. For more information on Meningitis Now www.MeningitisNow.org

Jail for Birmingham Airport’s smuggling pair

Two security workers at Birmingham Airport have been jailed for helping illegal immigrants pass through border control. Imtiaz Ahmed and Ghulam Sarwar, both former employees of private contractor ICTS, allowed passengers with forged passports from India, on to flights to Canada. The pair was sentenced to seven years in prison with 45-year-old Mr Sarwar receiving a three-year sentence, and Ms Ahmed, 45, receiving four years. Birmingham Crown Court heard how the process would begin with one person, carrying a genuine passport, checking in on a flight, before passing their boarding card to someone holding a fake passport with the same name. The holder of the fake passport would then pass through airport security, with the aid of Ahmed and Sarwar. The National Crime Agency said the UK passport holder would be paid between £200 and £300 for their part in the scheme Richard Warner, National Crime Agency Birmingham branch commander, said: “All the offences committed by these individuals were serious, but the roles played by the corrupt airline contractors were key to the conspiracy. “In bringing them to justice we have dismantled an organised crime network responsible for serious attempts to circumvent airport and airline procedures and smuggle people across international borders.”

Detective Chief Inspector Dean Young, from the Coventry Police Public Protection Unit, said: "We are still trying to piece together exactly what happened before Khaleel suffered the injuries that ultimately led to his death. "As part of our ongoing inquiry, I am keen to speak to anyone who had contact with him or his family during his very short life, particularly in the days and weeks before he died. "We have spoken to lots of people as part of the investigation so far, but I'm sure there are others out there who may have information that could help us and I would urge them to come forward." MURDERED: Two-year-old Khaleel Hussain died at Birmingham Children's Hospital after suffering a serious head injury

Aid agencies rise to the challenge The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), a group of 14 UK aid organisations has today said that life saving aid is on the move in the Philippines, despite huge obstacles to reaching survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. Water, food and emergency shelter remain the top priority. Impassable roads, closed ports, an ill-equipped airport and increasing security concerns have been among the top challenges faced by aid agencies trying to get relief to over 11 million affected people. The biggest obstacle is blocked roads, which are narrow, strewn with heavy debris and in many cases impassable by vehicles. Many aid workers are carrying out assessments on foot, walking for hours across rough terrain. One agency has sent mountain bikes to its team in Tacloban, one of the worst affected areas, to cross roads destroyed by landslides. Coree Steadmen, Christian Aid’s Emergency Manager in the Philippines said: “The devastation here is unimaginable.Aid workers are walking for hours and not seeing a single standing building. “Most roads are covered with fallen trees and collapsed houses. Where roads are accessible, they are grid locked with cars fleeing the area. Getting aid through is tough, but we are resourceful and we will find a way.” The airport in Tacloban is too small for aid agencies to fly in the volume

of water, food and shelter materials needed and until yesterday, sea ports have been closed or congested. Aid planes are now being flown into Manila and Cebu, while a potential boat route is being considered. However onward road travel to Tacloban and other affected areas remain a challenge, with some agencies requesting army helicopters to access the hardest to reach communities. Telephone lines and the internet have been offline for days, making contact with affected communities and Filipino partner agencies impossible. However communications infrastructure is gradually being restored and aid workers say it will make a significant difference to the coordination and movement of aid. The Philippines government is experienced in dealing with the effects of storms, but the devastation caused by the typhoon is unprecedented. The government, army and police have lost a significant number of staff; killed bereaved or otherwise impacted by the disaster.

This is understandably affecting their capacity to coordinate the response. Added to the challenge is the security situation, which is becoming increasingly volatile. People are desperate for food and water and a few of them are resorting to taking what they need to survive by force. Saleh Saeed, Chief executive of the DEC said: “In a seemingly impossible situation, aid agencies are finding

ways to get life-saving aid to those who need it. The logistical challenges are huge, but with the support of UK donations we are overcoming them. “We are now calling on the Philippines government and United Nations to prioritise road clearance and set up key distribution locations to enable aid agencies to coordinate the relief effort as effectively as possible.”

Fighting Diabetes in India

There is a growing problem in India and it seems the remedy is not close to being found with scientists baffled by the rising number of diabetics in the country. A host of cures have been tried and tested by diabetes experts in India who are in desperate search of local and costeffective methods to fend off the disease which is rapidly spreading across the nation. India is home to more than 60 million diabetics, a number that the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) estimates will cross 85 million in 2030, or nearly eight per cent of the country’s population today. Doctors told Reuter’s India Insight that in 1975 ∑ when India’s GDP was around $100 billion — only about 1.5 per cent of its population had diabetes. Today’s percentage is more in line with developed nations such as the United States at 8.3 per cent and France at five per cent. Among the reasons for the rising number of cases is an increasing tendency toward sedentary lifestyles that have accompanied growing economic prosperity, as well as genetic predispositions in a country already known for its sweet tooth. While experts say initiatives such as promoting physical fitness, healthy eating and restricting sales of junk food and cola near schools help prevent diabetes, some doctors in India are hunting for remedies that they think are better suited to that country.

China relax one-child policy

China’s controversial policy, which restricts families across the country to just one child each, is set to be relaxed in the coming months. New plans, to allow parents who were an only child to have two children, will be introduced in the country according to state media agency, Xinhua. The initiative came following a weekly meet of the Communist party, with leaders believed to be willing to budge on the previously strict rules. Other reforms include the abolition of ‘re-education through labour’ camps and moves to boost the role of the private sector in the economy. Though the scale of the Chinese leadership’s new social and economic reforms are vast, affecting millions across China, none of these changes should come as a shock. Many have been discussed in the Chinese state media in the past, and many have already been test-driven on smaller scales in different parts across the country. For example, in some Chinese cities for the past few years, couples who are both single children have been allowed the option of having a second child. This latest change will allow couples, whereby only one partner is a single child, to have two children. Similarly, Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to abolish the much-hated “reeducation through labour” system when he came to power earlier this year. Quietly, officials have been winding down the system over the past few months.

Mid-air crisis

A plane full of Air India passengers was given a midair scare last week after a door on the plane was not closed properly. The flight from Jeddah to Mumbai, took off on Friday 15th November as normal yet just minutes into the journey, a cockpit panel showed that one of the doors was not properly locked. The Boeing 747 – AI 964 – was immediately flown back to the Saudi Arabian city’s airport whereby the problem was fixed before the 400 passengers and 12 crew members were allowed to board once more. After a two hour delay, the Air India flight finally took off once again and landed safely in Mumbai with no further incident. Sources close to the airline said as soon as it took off from Jeddah, the cockpit panel showed that door was not properly locked, prompting the pilot to fly back. These incidents are extremely rare and an Air India spokesman strongly denied any claim that the door was open mid-air.

Maldives begin search for new President

Maldives President Mohamed Waheed stepped down on Friday 15th November as the country begins preparations to host the second round of their presidential elections. In a farewell speech, Waheed reiterated his tenure’s main priority was to enhance the country’s foreign relations, adding that the long standing, non-aligned, independent foreign policy with an Islamic character was changed by the then (Nasheed) government. “Because of this, in global currents, the country’s own say was weakened by manifolds. The country was under a position where it could be forced, by changing the Constitution, to do things that its legal framework didn’t allow. The government and senior leadership were being asked to resign within few hours, to flout the orders of court, and to stand against those orders,” the outgoing Waheed said. Waheed continued by saying that his government ‘refused to bow down to foreign pressure’, and instead upheld the legal framework and the orders of the constitutional institutions of the country. The second round of the Presidential Election will take place on Saturday 16th November with the Maldives Democratic Party candidate and former president Mohamed Nasheed being the frontrunner.

Did life begin down under?

Life on earth is one of the most contested arguments that has ever been conceived yet scientists in Australia now believe they may have found proof of life stretching back 3.5billion years. Deep within a remote, hot, dry patch of northwestern Australia a new formation has been discovered which could ‘rewrite history’. Scientists estimate the planet formed roughly 4.5 billion years ago; minerals known as zircons, indicating water, and continents existed within 100 million and 200 million years after that on what was still a scalding planet. The existence of water suggests that life was possible. But what did it look like, and when did it start? The discovery from the Dresser Formation, a much examined outcrop of rocks in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, documented in a paper published online this week in the Astrobiology journal may help answer those questions. It centers on something called microbially induced sedimentary structures, commonly shortened to the acronym MISS. This amazing feature is, what some scientists believe, the key to finding the first demonstrable evidence of life on earth.

PIA in the spotlight again

SENTENCED: Experienced pilot, Irfan Faiz gets nine months imprisonment for being drunk while in charge of his passenger jet flight out of Leeds Bradford International Airport This latest news follows hot on the heels of the sentencing of experienced PIA pilot, Irfan Faiz, 55, who was arrested for being drunk as he prepared to fly a plane. Faiz, father-of-two, was more than three times over the alcohol limit, as he was about to fly an Airbus with 156 people on board to Pakistan from Leeds Bradford Airport on 18th September. He was about to pilot the P a k i s t a n International Airlines 776 flight to Islamabad,

when he was asked to leave the cockpit due to concerns raised by security staff. Faiz gave an initial reading of 41 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath on the police officer's hand-held device. The legal limit for driving a car is 35 microgrammes but for flying in the UK it’s just nine, the court heard. He later gave a reading on the evidential machine of 28. Faiz's barrister, Paul Greaney QC, told the court his client was not a heavy drinker but was under a lot of stress at the

time because of a kidnap threat against his family back home. Mr Greaney also told the judge that, despite being an experienced pilot, Faiz was not aware of the drink-fly rules in the UK and that the rules in Pakistan are that there must be a 12-hour gap between ''bottle and throttle''. “Out-dated Imams doing more harm than good”

New website now live, please visit: www.asianexpress.co.uk Endangered ‘Asian Unicorn’ sighted in Vietnam

The critically endangered twinhorned saola has been sighted in Vietnam for the first time in over a decade, raising hopes of recovery for the mysterious animal, conservationists said on Wednesday 13th November. Known as the ‘Asian Unicorn’ for its extreme elusiveness, the antelope-like creature was spotted in September using a camera trap set by the WWF and the communist country’s government in Vietnam’s central Annamite mountains. “When our team first looked at the photos we couldn’t believe our eyes. Saola are the holy grail for South East Asian conservationists so there was a lot of excitement,” said Van Ngoc Thinh, WWF Vietnam’s country director. “This is a breathtaking discovery and renews hope for the recovery of the species,” he said in a statement. Saola, which were only discovered in 1992, have two parallel horns with sharp ends, which can reach 50 centimeters in length (20 inches). One of the secretive creatures was seen in August 2010 - the first sighting in a decade - but it died a few days after it was captured by villagers in Laos, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. It was the first time a wild saola had been spotted since one was captured on camera in 1999 in Laos. Dang Dinh Nguyen, Deputy Head of Quang Nam Forest Protection Department, said the last sighting of a saola in Vietnam was in 1998. He said the latest appearance of the animal was ‘an historic moment’ and showed that conservation efforts in the critical saola habitat were effective. Conservationists believe there could be only a few dozen surviving in the wild, with best-case estimates ranging to several hundred. In the area where the saola was sighted, the WWF runs a law enforcement program which recruits forest guards from the local community to prevent illegal hunting. Since 2011, the forest guards have removed 30,000 snares and destroyed more than 600 illegal hunters’ camps. “Confirmation of the presence of the saola in this area is a testament to the dedicated and tireless efforts of these forest guards,” said Thinh. When it was found two decades ago the saola was “the first large mammal new to science in more than 50 years and one of the most spectacular species discoveries of the 20th century,” WWF said.

Muslim prison advisor speaks out against old fashioned teaching methods and cause for high Muslim prison rates

Young Muslim men are turning away from religion in their droves because of the old-fashion attitudes in Britain’s mosques, according to one professional. Ahtsham Ali, an advisor to the Prison Services said it was one of the reasons why a growing number of Muslims are turning to crime and finding themselves in prison. We take a look at how Yorkshire’s Muslim communities feel about this and whether old fashioned Imams need to change their ways. Mr Ali also blamed family breakdown, problems resulting from arranged marriages, drugs and the absence of male role models. The cleric was highly critical of UK mosques for failing to understand young Muslims raised in Britain and said a main factor was that most import foreign imams who cannot speak English and focus only on religious rituals. Mr Ali, who has been the Prison Service’s adviser for eight-and-a-half-years, said:“Most will get Imams imported from other countries who can’t speak English. More importantly, they cannot relate to second and third-generation youngsters growing up here. “It is a tragedy. “I have seen youngsters, the next generation, just totally switch off from it. This is dangerous. It allows others to take advantage, to take up the vacuum.” In 2012, 11,000 of the 85,300 people in prison were Muslim. While there has been a steep rise in the number of Muslims behind bars over the past two decades, according CHANGE: to the National Offender Younger Mosque Management Service. leader needed Some would criticise that the language barrier was a prominent one, and that youngsters often lost interest because they can’t understand Urdu or Punjabi as well as those twenty years ago. The Madni J a m i a Mosque in Bradford h a s been

doing things a little differently for a while now. Offering madrassas in English as well as recently hosting a careers drop-in day, the Thornbury Road mosque is moving with the times. Mosque General Secretary, Abdul Sattar commented:“It's different to when we grew up when we could not understand Urdu very well. Mosques should be teaching in English as well as it’s the mother tongue of many of the children. “You’ll find that the children learn quicker and they remember more, which they can put into their own lives.” Discussing other reasons why he believed the numbers are on the rise, Mr Ali added:“There is a lot of family breakdown happening now. The divorce rate is very high. I think there is a struggle for those who have been born and brought up here and their acceptance of arranged marriage.” Mr Ali urged mosques to become more accessible to the young, for faith leaders to make religion fun and put more emphasis on teaching religious ethics. One mother Wajida Iqram, used to send her 11year-old to a madrassa in Leeds for Quranic studies and said she now prefers to self-teach her kids. “Nothing has ever happened to him, but I have heard the stories, which are becoming increasingly more common, about what goes on at some Mosques,” she said. “Hitting kids just gives all the wrong signals out. Rather than doing any good, it does the exact opposite; it’s not the way to teach them with force. “It’s about wanting to learn about your religion and when you have those bad memories of getting

hit, you will always associate your religion with those memories.” Wajida now self-schools her son at home and said it was the best decision she’d ever made. She added: “Yes, sending your kids to the mosque is a great thing and we need to encourage this. “But I find teaching them yourself builds a greater bond between you and them, something that you will remember forever. “I remember my mum taught me how to read the Quran and it was brilliant.” A 21-year-old man of Bradford, wanting only to be referred to as Zaf has just served a short prison sentence for assault and he blames the pressures of society for the reasons in high prison rates among Muslims. “Yes we do have a problem in our mosques, one of which is the Imams that are in them. “Most of the ones in Bradford don’t speak a word of English and just continue to do the same things, then we wonder why there are so many problems. “We need English speakers and those with knowledge to guide the youth of today.” A crime solicitor from Yorkshire, who deals with a lot of Muslim clients said: “Most of my clients are Asian. Now that’s not just because there are a lot of Asians in Leeds and Bradford, it’s because a lot of Asians are getting into crime. “We have to try and understand the reason for these high figures. “I personally blame lack of education. While I do think some of our Imams are a bit out of touch, even non-Muslims can be criminals.” However, one Bradford Imam, Fiaz Ahmed said old-school teaching needs to be preserved for fear of losing traditions. He said: “I think most Imams do a good job in not only following their religion but encouraging others to learn as well.”

Ever had a dodgy stomach the morning after a curry? It must be a stomach bug or something, unless the pain in your gut is being prepared and served by unqualified, irresponsible cooks who have no prior experience of professional catering? The most popular dish in the UK is chicken tikka masala, but it is probably one of the easiest to corrupt with unhealthy ingredients, resulting in extreme discomfort for the consumer, and sometimes long term health issues. Atul Kochhar, the twice Michelin Starred chef at Benares and one of the stars of cookery programmes such as The Great British Menu, was kind enough to share his opinions with the Asian Express. He said: “The natural colour has been used in Asian cooking for long time but it got replaced by artificial colour sometime in 19th Century. Since then its use has been abused rather than provide colour for a reason. I do not like the use of artificial colour in the food at all. “We use only natural source of colour – if ever we have to use – however, we prefer not to use any form of colour in our food. ‘Nature gives us the Best’ is our policy. Artificial colour using restaurants are making Indian food look cheap just to make little better profit. When asked about the relevance of Indian food in Britain, he added: “It is quite a favoured cuisine in the UK. It has a long history with Indian food and it was one of the first Asian food to reach UK. Due to its long presence in the UK – Indian cuisine of UK is considered part of local gastronomy and not a foreign cuisine anymore.” Cyrus Todiwala OBE, owner and executive chef at Café Spice Namaste, also spoke exclusively to the Asian Express expressing his concern for the public’s health, the

plight of the small business and the importance of British culture. He said: “I am opposed to artificial colours. The British public needs to be educated on what to expect. “A lot of people expect Indian food to be brightly coloured. The battle for chefs like me and others is to educate people on the matter. The attitude to Asian food is that it is cheap and cheerful but we have to prove that wrong. “It’s difficult for the smaller business because they have smaller profit margins and more competition. They get into the bad habit of using colours and they are afraid that they will stop using they lose their customers. They need to stop serving greasy and fatty foods, too. “I threw out all of the dyes and colourings in my first kitchen and I received complaints saying my tandoori dishes were the wrong colour. If the smaller businesses had more courage, better standards and better knowledge the bad cooking practices would stop. “I think the British public has one of the most discerning palates in the world and they have chosen Indian dishes as their favourite because the food is open like the culture. I just wish the British public was more patriotic.” Who is to blame? Preparing a curry is an art in itself. An accomplished chef can use over 20 spices when making the base for a dish, in order to create something that is vibrant in both flavour and

The essence of making curries is that it is an unregulated practice However, a cook who may cut corners, adding dyes and food colourings to create the resplendent red sauce usually associated with chicken tikka masala. As restaurants and takeaways appear on every street corner, poor quality curries are slowly becoming a problem for the well-being of the public and Asian culture itself. Health issues. Salt is another culprit in Asian cuisine, as the communal nature of preparing a curry makes it difficult to gauge how much salt is added. The Department of Health, which now regulates salt content in food, has found that 75 per cent of the salt we eat is already in food. David Pickering at Trading Standards said: “It is not our job to say to people that having a takeaway is dangerous, but it is our job to step in when a restaurant or takeaway has been reported as being dangerous. “For whatever reason people find their local Indian restaurant makes great curries then you go to another and their curries are a poor quality. “We recently inspected a takeaway restaurant that had 27g of salt in one meal which is just unacceptable.” A person’s recommended salt intake is 6g a day, anymore than this can raise blood pressure and ultimately put you at risk of heart disease and strokes. What the experts say… Huz Patel, Brand Development at Lubna Foods LTD, a major supplier of spices, said: “There must be a certificate of authenticity and you have to go to credible retailers. “You also have to work with people who are in it to make a quality product that’s why we check everything with the European Spice Association (ESA). We always try to buy spices which are pure. “The ESA set a standard and we have to meet their requirements. We have ethical suppliers. We send a sample off to our labs to check that everything is above board, this includes checking for Sudan I, which is related to heart problems, and high ash content. “When we recruit someone in the purchasing department we are very careful. They must have the correct background.”

Guidelines set by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) state: “colours may only be used if they perform a useful purpose, are safe and do not mislead the consumer.” Further research initiated by the FSA and Trading Standards has found some artificial colourings in particular are singlehandedly contributing to a decline in health. Colours such as tartrazine, sunset yellow and allura red are known to be added to curries, and it is these curries that the FSA and Trading Standards have linked to hyperactivity. Prolonging the problem. The notion of having a few drinks and going for a curry, famously covered by the sketch show ‘Goodness Gracious Me,’ is still very popular amongst Britons up and down the country. As a multi-cultural society, it is commendable that Asian cuisine is NO CLUE: Some chefs are making meals that are neither authentic nor healthy

follow us on twitter: UNICEF first partner in new UK drive for Syria’s children

The UK government will match, pound for pound, all public donations to UNICEF’s Syria appeal, International Development Secretary Justine Greening announced today. The boost comes through the government’s Aid Match system and will double the charity’s ability to help children caught up in the crisis. This is the first charity partnership in a major new initiative from the government that will provide critical support to charities working to reach Syrian children who are suffering as a result of the war. The initiative is intended to recognise the level of concern from the British public about the millions of children now in desperate need of help by matching the generous public response to charity appeals. A series of further match funding initiatives, which could provide tens of millions of pounds in new support, will be agreed and announced in the run up to Christmas to help the children of Syria cope with the onset of winter and the trauma of conflict. International Development Secretary Justine Greening said: “Syria’s people are experiencing unimaginable hardship with millions of children in particular facing a bleak and uncertain future. “The UK has already committed its largest ever humanitarian response to the crisis and we are now teaming up with UNICEF to double the power of donations from the British public. “Our partnership with UNICEF means that donations to UNICEF’s appeal for the children of Syria will be matched pound for pound by the UK Government.” UNICEF UK Ambassador Jemima Khan, who will be co-hosting UNICEF’s Halloween Ball fundraiser tonight, said: “For over two years, the children of Syria have been witnessing and experiencing one horror after another. I have seen UNICEF’s work in emergencies all over the World. They work tirelessly to reach every child, but they cannot do it alone and the need has never been so urgent, particularly with winter approaching. “We hope to raise vital funds at The Halloween Ball this evening for the children of Syria and I am very grateful to the UK government who have pledged to match pound for pound everything we raise.” Over four million children’s lives have been affected by the Syria crisis with over a million of them forced to become refugees. More than a million Syrian children are unable to access basic education and more than 5,000 schools have been destroyed or damaged. Match funding will mean UNICEF can provide potentially life-saving assistance to thousands more children both inside Syria and in neighbouring countries, where they have fled the continuing fighting. As well as clean drinking water, food, vaccinations and medical support, match funding will support UNICEF’s work to provide education and trauma counselling for children who have been exposed to the horrors of the conflict. This weeks announcement came ahead of UNICEF’s Halloween Ball which welcomed up to 400 guests from the worlds of entertainment, fashion and business in order to raise vitally needed funds for the children of Syria. All public donations made for UNICEF’s work in Syria at the ball and over the following three months will be matched by the government under this agreement. The new Syria match funding initiative will support a range of work from charities operating inside Syria and across the region. This could include basic equipment for temporary schools, paying teachers, heating in the harsh winter, helping children get out of hard and exploitative work and preventing girls from being trafficked, as well as supporting programmes that aim to keep children warm and safe during winter months.

A former bus driver, who investigated complaints that Asian workers had to pay bribes to corrupt union officials before they could gain employment on the buses has broken all barriers. Mohammed Taj is the first Asian and Muslim trade unionist to be elected President of the Trades Union Congress (TUC). At the age of 21, Taj became a bus driver and was introduced to union work, after which he became involved with the Transport and General Workers’ Union. He received death threats when he began to investigate complaints that Asian workers had to pay bribes to corrupt union officials and managers before they could gain employment on the buses. Not one for backing down, Taj was determined to uncover the truth and fight the injustice. He explains: “In those days you were talking about paying your first eight weeks of your salary to a middleman. “I persuaded people to talk and said ‘look it’s important we break the scandal.” As a result of his work into unjust practices throughout the company, there was a court case and those found guilty were sent to prison. Now, commenting on how it felt to

win the election and take on one of the UK’s m o s t important jobs, Taj said: “Its’ a really proud moment for me, as someone who has made it through the ranks from shop floor level.” When asked how he felt to become the first Asian and Muslim President of the TUC, Mr Taj said: “I’m a worker first and a trade unionist who happens to be a Muslim. “I want to show people that anyone can succeed. I came to England in 1966 not being able to speak a word of English; I went to an immigrant centre for three months then onto Bradford College to study. “If I can do it, then so can you. Don’t give up, keep fighting, keep trying and you will succeed!” Outlining what he hoped to achieve as President of the TUC, Taj said: “In my twelve months as President I would like to help lower the barriers to racism. I believe that one of the best way to break down racial barriers is the place of work.” Taj studied at the Trade Union Centre at Bradford College and later went on to teach the courses and is an avid supporter of the College.

He gives credit to the Head of Trade Union Studies, Steve Davison and Bradford College Lecturer Bill Morgan-Cooper with encouraging him in his union work during his early involvement. Commenting on the newly elected President, Steve Davison, Head of Trade Union Studies at Bradford College said: “I’m absolutely delighted, both for the TUC and for Taj personally. “Taj is one of life’s really good guys. “His story is both a Bradford story of an ordinary person overcoming the odds to reach the top - and a story of courageously fighting racism. “He has not been poisoned by it and has been able to make the breakthrough to represent people regardless of their skin colour, religion and their beliefs - and that I think sums up Mohammed Taj!” In 1982 Mr Taj was elected as a T&G’s shop steward at the company. Taj elaborating further said: “When I first stood, 70% of the members here were white at the time, so getting elected was a bit of a milestone because there was this perception that

wherever there were white workers, you were not likely to succeed.” Ten years later he became a worker director for the whole of West Yorkshire. In the late 1980s unions were beginning to look at how they might do more to better represent workers from black and Asian communities. Mr Taj was elected chairman of the T&G’s national race equality committee, and is a long serving member of the Executive Council of the union. Mr Taj has been on the TUC’s General Council since 2001.

“London can lead the world as an Islamic finance hub”

AsianExpress.co.uk

November 2013 - 1st Edition

This week, more than 1,000 investors from more than 100 countries and 15 global leaders are gathering for the ninth World Islamic Economic Forum. The forum is not in Dubai, Jakarta or Islamabad, however, but in London. For the first time, it is being held in a non-Islamic country – and Britain is honoured to play host. This is an example of the UK’s position as the centre for global finance. And we intend to keep it that way. That is why I have already set out to ensure that the City of London is the home to fastgrowing new markets, from Indian infrastructure funds to offshore Chinese renminbi. Now we have set ourselves this ambition: to be the unrivalled western centre for Islamic finance. This will not only create jobs in Britain, but it will also bring investment. London’s Shard building and the athletes’ village for the 2012 Olympic Games were made possible by Islamic finance. And Islamic investment is continuing to play a vital role in rebuilding UK infrastructure – from the £400m Malaysian investment in Battersea power station, which will regenerate the Nine Elms area of London after decades of decay; to the £1.5bn Dubai investment in the London Gateway, the UK’s first deep-sea container port. Just look at the mathematics.

By George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer

Islamic finance is growing 50 per cent faster than the traditional banking sector, and it has huge growth potential. A quarter of the world’s population is Muslim but only 1 per cent of the world’s financial assets are sharia-compliant. Across the Middle East and north Africa, less t han 20 per cent of adults have a formal bank account. That gap presents a huge economic opportunity for the UK. We are building on existing strengths. London, with $19bn of reported assets, is already a major home to Islamic finance outside the Islamic world. Britain has more sharia-compliant banks than any other western European country. And it has more than a dozen universities or business schools offering executive courses in Islamic finance – including a new

programme for senior executives at the University of Cambridge announced this month. We need to do even more if we want the UK to reap all the benefits of Islamic finance. So we have announced plans to make government schemes such as student loans, start-up loans and the enterprise allowance compatible with Islamic finance rules. But with the World Islamic Economic Forum in town, now is the time for a big and bold step that will cement the UK’s reputation in the Islamic financial world. Today the prime minister will announce that the UK Treasury is working on the practicalities of issuing a bondlike sukuk worth about £200m. Our ambition is clear: to make Britain the first sovereign to issue an Islamic bond outside the Islamic

world. Sukuk bonds do not pay interest but instead entitle investors to a share in the returns generated by an underlying asset, such as property, making them Islamiccompliant. These bonds will support the expansion of Islamic banking in the UK – providing economic benefits to non-Muslims and Muslims alike, including the 2.7m Muslims living in Britain. The government’s Islamic bonds issue will act as a catalyst for corporate institutions to follow suit – further expanding the use of sukuk as an asset class in the global capital markets, and helping to promote more needed overseas investment in Britain’s infrastructure. Britain is at its best when it is open to the rest of the world. So while others in the western world resist change, this government is embracing it – banging the drum for British businesses, seeking out new markets and welcoming overseas investment with open arms. We are prepared to take the big steps our nation requires if it is to succeed in the global race. Whether it is attracting money from China, rejecting damaging protectionism and financial transaction taxes, or issuing the first sovereign Islamic bond in the western world – this government is doing what it takes to open Britain up for business, and for new sources of finance and extra jobs.

Flu jabs for all

Health bosses in Birmingham aim to boost the uptake of flu jabs across the city by translating the flu-fighter message into community languages. So far Public Health Birmingham has produced audio translations of the campaign in Urdu, Bengali and Punjabi. And the 60-second audio clips were recorded by Birmingham City Council staff, meaning there was no extra cost to the taxpayer. Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Steve Bedser, said: “It’s absolutely vital that people in at-risk groups across Birmingham get their flu jab this year and we want to make sure that message reaches as many people as possible. “But in a big city like Birmingham there are hard to reach people in every community and one barrier is that for some older people English may not be their first language.

Tackling extremism

Security Minister James Brokenshire reaffirmed the government's commitment to tackling extremism as he met Muslim, Hindu and Christian faith leaders in Manchester last week. He was speaking at a roundtable discussion at Manchester Central Mosque and Islamic Cultural Centre, which was also attended by representatives from Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Police. It was the first in a series of UK visits arranged to highlight the steps being taken to combat extremism and demonstrate how this work is supported by action to protect religious institutions. The Minister condemned attacks against mosques and Islamic centres in the aftermath of events in Woolwich, including those carried out by Pavlo Lapshyn in the West Midlands.

Meningitis The Fight for lifesaving vaccine goes on

Meningitis Now has vowed to continue its fight for a Meningitis B vaccine, after the Government announced that it’s considering new evidence to support its introduction into the childhood immunisation schedule. Meningitis Now Executive Founder, Steve Dayman, lost his son Spencer to meningitis in 1982. Responding to the news, he said: “We know that the Government wants to bring in vaccines that save lives and we welcome the news that they are looking at more evidence to support its introduction. “But as we head into winter, cases of meningitis will increase and we are concerned that time lost is lives lost. “Meningitis is the disease parents fear most and this vaccine is expected to wipe out at least 73% of the most common form of bacterial meningitis in the UK.

“It has been a torrent of abuse”

SHOCKED: Tenant Damus Plysus was in disbelief at the graffiti When Mr Mohammed purchased, what he believed to be, his dream home in 2010, the Huddersfield businessman had big plans for the property yet three years later, the house remains derelict after years of intimidation. Smashed windows, racist graffiti and even a fire have all been seen at the residence on Inglewood Avenue, Huddersfield, in what the home owners describes as an attack by the ‘racist geriatric mafia’. Mr Mohammed, a father of three, purchased the home hoping to renovate the site and move in with his family yet the constant barrage of abuse has caused him to ‘seriously reconsider’ his plans. “It has been three years since we bought the property and I still do not know what we are going to do with it,” the West Yorkshire insulation manager explained. “Every time I put in a proposal to change something about the house it gets rejected and the abuse begins. It is a minority in the

community but they are seriously causing a problem for everybody else.” The words ‘No P*ki Hotel’ were sprayed across the garage door in January 2012 after planning permission had been put in to begin renovating the house, whilst the words ‘No Muslim Hotel’ were added earlier this year and still remain. 40-year-old Mr Mohammed initially believed that some of the community had racist attitudes towards Muslims yet after renting out the property, his mindset was quickly changed. He said: “I decided to rent out the property to some Eastern Europeans who were looking for a place in the area, they were just students really. “It wasn’t until they moved in that I realised the discrimination which exists from some of the neighbours. “I remember two of the neighbours saying to them ‘Your kind shouldn’t be living here’. They were shocked and

questioned ‘what kind?’, to which the neighbours replied ‘you Eastern Europeans, you don’t deserve to live in such a nice neighbourhood you should go elsewhere’.” Lithuanian student, Darius Lubys, was the tenant subjected to the abuse. After the verbal tirade, a fire was started in the home and subsequently reported to police whereby it was determined an accelerant had been used. Nobody has been arrested since the event. Mr Mohammed currently has an appeal in place to allow building work to finally begin on his property yet remains pessimistic about the possibility of the plans being approved. He said: “I have had applications turned down before and have been told in advance that they will be rejected because some of the neighbours ‘know people’ on the committee. “Someone recently told me ‘you aren’t building a ‘Mahal’ next door to me’ yet even

if we got approval we won’t even be the biggest house on the street. There is one which covers 8,000sq/ft which is much bigger than ours.” Born and raised in Huddersfield, Mr Mohammed must now decide whether his dream property could still serve as a home for his family. Having never been victim of any racist attacks in the past, it is a previously unknown problem which he must now tackle. “The appeal is in now and if it goes through I will certainly take a very long look and consider my position. I can still sell it with permission as I’m thinking about whether I want to be amongst the racist people but there are some nice people there. “At the end of the day, the safety of me and the children is the primary concern. To know these people don’t want you there is totally unnerving so would I want to move in? I still don’t know.”

Keeping safe on London roads

Green Assembly member Jenny Jones, has written to the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, asking him to explain why road deaths are rising in the city at a time when they are falling elsewhere in the country. 284 people were killed on London’s roads last year, a rise of six per cent from 1999 and a 19 per cent jump from 1998. The increase in the London figures for deaths and serious injuries are in contrast to the two per cent fall in the national figures last year and an identical fall the year before. The Mayor is due to announce tough targets for reducing road deaths and serious injuries by 40 per cent, as part of his Road Safety Plan to be launch in a few weeks time. The Greens are concerned that London will continue to buck the national trend unless the police and local authorities are given the resources to promote a policy of zero tolerance on speeding.

Search continues

Detectives investigating the disappearance of a mother-of-three have charged a third man in connection with her death. Rania Alayed, 25, from Cheetham Hill, Manchester, was reported missing from home on the 2nd July 2013 and has not been seen since the 7th July. Greater Manchester Police launched a murder investigation following the disappearance yet were forced to end the search, near the A19 in North Yorkshire, after there were no signs of her body on a 15-mile stretch of road. Police officers and the army had been looking for Ms Alayed's body along the stretch of road near Thirsk. Hussain Al Khateeb, 34, of Knutsford Road, Gorton, is the latest body to be charged in connection with the case after perverting the course of justice. He was due to appear before magistrates in Manchester this month.

As half-time approached at Upton Park last weekend, fans from both sides of the crowd made their way indoors for the half time refreshments. One small group of Muslim supporters gathered in the Sir Trevor Brooking stand to conduct their Mahgrib prayers - the fourth of devout Muslim’s five prayers a day, as the match coincided with the set prayer time. However, after beginning their prayers at approximately ten minutes before the half time whistle

(6pm), the small group became the target of insults and intimidation from a section of home supporters. They were met first by disbelief, then swearing and finally by increasingly loud chants of “Irons”, the club’s nickname, apparently intended to drown out the prayers. The Muslim fans turned round anxiously to see they were being filmed and stared at, yet carried on with their ritual. The supporters, who are understood not to have made any complaint, had been invited to the club as part of a highly commended initiative to forger close links with local community

groups. One member of the small congregation was Ali, who spoke to BBC Radio about his experience at the stadium. “There were people crowding us and sort of breaking us apart from each other. They were laughing behind our heads really loudly and shouting in our ears,” he explained. “It was something along the lines of ‘I can’t believe what I am seeing’ and initially it was just one voice, then it was a couple of voices. The group started growing bigger. There were more offensive remarks made, ‘what you doing here?’ ‘Why are there so

many of you?’, ‘get out of here’.” Ali was in attendance as a representative of one of the hundreds of organisations who were offered discounted tickets by the London outfit in an attempt to promote the club in the community. A large number of Asian Residents live in the surrounding area to the ground and therefore were qualified for the discounted tickets. Danny Lynch, of leading anti-racism charity Kick it Out, said the situation was ‘unpleasant’ for all involved. He said: “West Ham united have a very good

track record in promoting equality and inclusion. We are in regular dialogue with some of the community groups who were on the receiving end of some of this ‘unpleasant’ behaviour. “The club should be commended for the work they undertake throughout the local community and their efforts to see a more diverse and reflective following at matches. Kick It Out encourages similar collaborative work on future initiatives of this nature to ensure everyone continues to feel welcome and comfortable at the Boleyn Ground."

Prince of Wales' mentoring initiative delivers masterclass at World Islamic Economic Forum

The 9th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) was held at Excel London on 29 - 31 October 2013 under the theme "Changing World, New Relationships". The forum aimed to encapsulate the emergence of new economic linkages between nations across borders, religions and cultures in a fast changing world. During the Forum, Mosaic was delighted to jointly deliver a masterclass session addressing Youth Unemployment and Apprenticeships with the Ashoka Foundation and Youth Business International (YBI). The session showcased the role of the Prince's Charities, of which Mosaic is a part, in tackling youth unemployment and apprenticeships. A key component of the masterclass

was discussion around the role of entrepreneurship in reducing youth unemployment; a particularly timely discussion as we prepare for the launch of 2013/2014 Apax-Mosaic Enterprise Challenge during Global Entrepreneurship Week, which will take place during 18-24 November 2013. The masterclass session was designed as an in-depth analysis to address the issues surrounding youth unemployment, set within the context of the recent global financial crises and the repercussions of the Arab Spring, both which have contributed to devastating consequences for jobs around the world, particularly affecting young people. The session highlighted the

gravity of the situation for young people, presented hard facts and relevant statistics to demonstrate that without careful intervention, we look at facing catastrophic problems in the near future. Mosaic's National Director Jonathan Freeman commented: "I am thrilled that Mosaic was given the opportunity to bring these critical issue to the 9th WIEF in partnership with the Ashoka Foundation and Youth Business International. “Our joint masterclass was designed to offer an in-depth analysis of some difficult and complex scenarios: how powerful is an apprenticeship framework in tackling youth unemployment? What is the extent of its outreach? How

can we do more to bring more jobs to young people? “We championed our ApaxMosaic Enterprise Challenge programme, which inherently tackles youth unemployment by encouraging entrepreneurship, through raising aspirations and facilitating the development of skills and confidence necessary to achieve those aspirations." Held outside of the Muslim World for the very first time, the 9th WIEF convened in London for 2013. The WIEF aims to promote dialogue and co operation among both Muslim and non-Muslim business men and women, in the belief that collaboration is the salient feature of 21st century international

relations. Nizam Uddin, Head of Development and Communications at Mosaic commented: "Business partnerships can become genuine bridges towards peace and prosperity between the Muslim and non-Muslim world. “Mosaic is thrilled to be a part of this 9th WIEF and to share our expertise in using business and entrepreneurship to promote young people's aspirations and build crosscultural bridges, particularly as this year it is hosted in London: one of the leading financial and cultural centres of the world and the business gateway between the Muslim and non-Muslim world."

Charities receive the X Factor

This year's X Factor winner's single will be released in aid of two charities, it was announced earlier this week. Syco Entertainment will split profits between Great Ormond Street Hospital and Together for Short Lives, when the single is officially release on the 15th (digitally) and 18th (in store) December. The two finalists will perform their prospective winner's singles as normal on the live final, with the song available to download once the winner is crowned. The show's creator, Simon Cowell, said: “Every day they (the two charities) do inspiring work and help a load of kids and their families, all of which need their expertise and support. “I have been lucky enough to see firsthand the great work that both of these charities do and I am thrilled that we can do something to help by donating the sales of The X Factor winner's single to them both.”

Sighting of the false black widow causes a wave of panic By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk The false widow spider (or steatoda nobilis, to use its posh name), Britain’s most venomous eight-legged creepy crawly, is spreading across the UK. Previously found mainly in southern England, the bug has recently been given a sense of wanderlust by our warmer climate this year. This has meant more sightings and, yikes, more reports of people being bitten across the UK. But how worried should we be? The honest truth is: not very much. Though the false black widow spiders’ bite can be extremely painful, it’s not life-threatening. The bite itself can cause a local burning sensation and swelling which usually calms down to a tingling sensation within a few hours. The fear, however, of this eight-legged creepy crawly is not unfounded. Black widow spiders are one of only two species of spiders in North America that are known to have venom that is extremely poisonous to humans. So poisonous in fact, that it can in

some instances even cause death. A bite from a real black widow spider will also attack the central nervous system and the respiratory system, causing severe pain and agony. It’s no wonder then that the black widow is a spider to be extremely cautious of, and to stay away from whenever possible. Fake or the real deal? The experts say that the way to identify the false one from the genuine black widow is to look at its belly – that’s if you haven’t passed out before this step. Here, the truE black widow spider will have either a series of red dots, or two small red triangles. If you see these, you know that you are seeing a true black widow spider. If you don’t see them, it’s most likely a Steatoda. Spinning a yarn In fairness, the false black widow spider (about the size of a 50p piece) does come from the black widow family and can pack a nasty sting. But, as bug expert Stuart Hine puts it: “A bite is extraordinarily rare, and usually no worse than a bee

sting – though a very few people may have an allergic reaction and experience something more severe.” ‘Never been bitten’ Many have breathlessly cited the example of a shopper who collapsed after being bitten ten times. This is true, but it only happened because the false widow had got trapped in his hoodie and was trying to escape. It was a one-off, freak incident. Stuart explains: “These spiders don’t wake up in the morning and dash out of their webs looking for someone to bite. “I’ve handled a lot of them and never been bitten. They only ever attack if they feel trapped.” ‘Not aggressive’ The false widow is thought to have arrived here over 100 years ago from the Canary Islands, in a shipment of bananas. It has a brown bulbous abdomen with cream markings that look spookily like a skull. But, far from being fleshcrazed monsters, they are described by entomologists as ‘ponderous, very slow-moving and not at all aggressive’.

FALSE ALARM: Although the bite of the steatoda nobilis (false black widow spider) is painful, it’s not life threatening

WHAT DO IF BITTEN BY A FALSE BLACK WIDOW Still, it’s best to be prepared. If someone is bitten by a false widow spider, take the following steps: 1. Place a cold compress (such as a frozen bag of peas) on the affected area for ten minutes to minimise the swelling. 2. Monitor the person’s condition, and if it worsens seek medical help.

Britain scraps visa bond scheme

The visa bond scheme, which was set to be introduced this month has been scrapped. It was announced by Home Secretary Theresa May in June this year after Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg threatened to block it. Under the plan, visitors from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Ghana seeking a sixmonth British visa would have been obliged to pay a refundable 3,000-pound cash bond to deter them from overstaying. It would be forfeited if they failed to make the return trip. The government chose those countries because they were “high risk” sources of illegal immigration, it said. Polls show that immigration is one of the most important issues for voters in Britain. Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg initially said the bond plan was an idea worth exploring, but changed his mind after some in his party called it discriminatory. Under his version of the policy, it would only apply to people from “high risk” countries who had been refused a visa through the normal route. Business Secretary Vince Cable has criticised the level at which the bond was set and said that it had caused “outrage” in India. The decision to scap the visa bond scheme has received a wide range of reactions. “We want the same control of immigration and our borders that Canada and Australia enjoy. What is so unreasonable about that? To my knowledge these are internationally respected nations which do not have an illiberal state television corporation subverting them from within.”

Children of Jannah set to launch in West Yorkshire By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A Bradford mother, who suffered the loss of two of her children when just months old, will begin offering bereavement services in the city as part of the Children of Jannah charity. 30-year-old, mother of three, Rezvana Hassan, of Thornbury, Bradford, is the West Yorkshire coordinator for the national charity which helps struggling families during times of bereavement. Aimed predominantly at Muslim mothers, Children of Jannah offers support and information to parents at the most devastating of times. Rezvana became involved with the group after the death of her second child, Haider Ali, approximately 18 months ago. Haider was sadly diagnosed with a rare genetic condition affecting his lungs on the day of his birth, exactly six years after the passing of Rezvana’s first child, Hashim Hussain. These experiences highlighted the need for a sympathetic ear in times of bereavement to Rezvana and consequently lead the West Yorkshire

mother to become involved with the Children of Jannah. “A couple of months after my second child had died I found out about the Children of Jannah charity through a friend at the cemetery so I initially joined their Facebook group,” she explained. “From there I began to get involved more and more with the group and became a group facilitator for the child bereavement services in West Yorkshire. “I lost my first son eight years ago and at the time didn’t get any support yet when my second child died at Martin House, the staff there and other health professionals did offer me the help. “Although I appreciated this so much, I didn’t feel they properly catered for my religious beliefs but it was nice to have the option there. “This is what I like about the Children of Jannah. It is a group who offer support to anybody who has lost a child and no matter what you say, or how you react, you don’t need to explain yourself.” The charity held a launch week for its pilot service in Manchester on the week commencing the 20th October, and Rezvana marked the

occasion with a special gift giving event at Bradford Royal Infirmary’s neo-natal unit. With the help of her friend, Kiran Hussain, the pair handed out tens of presents to parents and children. “When I heard about the date of the launch, which also coincided with the eight year anniversary of the death of my first child, I knew I had to do something,” Rezvana explained. “We managed to give out lots of gifts and presents to the children and to see their smiles was really fantastic and showed what the Children of Jannah is all about.” Children of Jannah will run a telephone helpline run by trained volunteers, have a Facebook page, organise meetings, offer support to siblings and other family members and produce help packs and sympathy cards. For more information about the services offered by the support group please visit, www.ChildrenofJannah.com or email westyorkshire@childrenofjannah.com

Corrupt detective sentenced for misconduct Four year sentence for former detective for severe misconduct and perverting the course of justice A former Greater Manchester Police officer who offered to plant a gun on an escorts exboyfriend was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square to four years in prison.

The suspended Detective Constable Daniel Withnell, 31, of Cranark Close, Heaton, Bolton pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to two counts of misconduct in a public office and perverting the course of justice. Claire Smethurst, 49, of Hatherlow Court, Westhoughton, Bolton, was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square on 9 October 2013 to 15 months imprisonment in prison suspended for two years. She was found guilty of perverting the course of justice at an earlier hearing. Between 30 September and 30 October 2012, Withnell offered to plant a shotgun in a car belonging to a man at the request of Claire Smethurst, an escort, who offered to pay him £19,000. She wanted to set up her former lover after a stormy break-up. Between 28 February and 2 October 2012 Withnell illegally obtained information on a police database and drafted a charging advice form purporting to be a lawyer from the CPS relating to a £500,000 money laundering investigation. SENTENCED: Detective Constable Daniel Withnell

The advice suggested that offences under investigation should either be discontinued or subject of lesser charges. The form was then sent on to a friend of the person subject of the criminal investigation via Withnell’s GMP email. On 16 March 2013 Withnell sent an anonymous text message to a police officer indicating a hit man had been paid to kill Daniel Withnell knowing these details were false. Assistant Chief Constable Dawn Copley said: "The conduct of former DC Daniel Withnell fell well short of what is expected of a police officer. "Police officers, staff and the communities of Greater Manchester would be appalled by his actions, which detract from the hard work that our officers and staff do on a daily basis. "GMP expects the very highest standards of all its officers and staff. They should be honest and act with integrity and should not compromise or abuse their position. "As soon as this conduct came to light, the Professional Standards Branch carried out a thorough investigation, supervised by the IPCC and as a result Mr Withnell has been convicted of two counts of misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice and Ms Smethhurst has been convicted of perverting the course of justice."

Victims to tell courts impact of crime

Victims’ will have a louder voice in the Criminal Justice System as they are given the entitlement for the first time to read their Victim Personal Statement out in court, Victims’ Minister Damian Green announced last week. The new, simple Victims’ Code published on Tuesday 29th October will make sure that for the first time victims can choose to explain personally to the court how a crime has affected them physically, emotionally, financially or in any other way. The judge will then take this into account when determining the sentence. Written for victims and not the ‘system’, the Code will ensure victims receive all the support they deserve, every step of the way. It sets out in plain English how to navigate an often confusing and intimidating Criminal Justice System, explaining what victims can expect from the moment they report a crime to the end of a trial, and who to demand help from if it is not provided. Victims’ Minister Damian Green said: “For too long victims have felt they are treated as an afterthought in the criminal justice system. No more. I am determined that victims are given back their voice and are fully supported. “The new Victims’ Code will for the first time entitle victims to read their Victim Personal Statement out in court. This will mean offenders and the court can be left in no doubt of the full impact of a crime. “I want to create a tougher justice system. Under this government those who break the law are more likely to go to prison for longer. I’m making sure victims’ voices are heard and that criminals no longer get away with just a slap on the wrist.” Javed Khan, Chief Executive of independent charity Victim Support, said: “We speak to more than one million victims of crime every year and know how often they feel left on the sidelines in the criminal justice system unable to make their voices heard. “We warmly welcome this decision which gives victims the choice to explain to a court in their own words the personal and emotional impacts a crime has had on them and their families, a process we know can help victims cope and recover from crime. “We believe the new code for victims is a big step towards making the criminal justice system truly responsive to the needs of victims and we look forward to working with Government, the police, courts and other partners to ensure it is effectively implemented.” The Victims’ Code will come into force in December 2013 and follows a six week consultation that closed on 10th May 2012.

Javed Khan, Chief Executive of independent charity Victim Support, says: “We believe the new code for victims is a big step towards making the criminal justice system truly responsive to the needs of victims”

School accused of fraud

Investigation into financial affairs of Bradford’s Kings Science Academy suggests fraudulent invoices and claims By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

This week the government faced questions in the House of Commons over its handling of allegations of fraud at one of its first flagship free schools. MPs focused on the Kings Science Academy (KSA) in Bradford, the subject of an internal audit highlighting large sums of missing money. This is teamed allegations of mismanagement and possible fraud, which includes fabricated invoices in order to claim thousands of pounds of public money. KSA was one of the first free schools approved by the Department for Education (DfE), and opened in September 2011, as a science-focused secondary school

for up to 800 pupils between ages 11 and 16. It moved to a new £10m building in the Lidget Green area last year. Earlier this year, Ofsted inspectors gave KSA a "requires improvement" grade in teaching and management. Last month the DfE published a redacted report from its own internal audit of the academy. It revealed that a whistleblower at the school had admitted that it had submitted fabricated invoices to the DfE. The report also found that £86,335 of a lead-in grant given by the department to help set up the free school had not been spent on what it was intended for. The investigation comes hard on the heels of the ongoing controversy at the Al-Madinah free school in Derby, which also

involved allegations of financial mismanagement and which announced the resignation of the chair of its board of governors. "We found serious failings in financial management at the Kings Science Academy. We informed the police who decided no further action was necessary," said a spokesman for the DfE. The spokesman said a plan was in place to recover the misued funds, and that the school was undertaking its own investigation. "Any necessary disciplinary action is a matter for the school," he said. However, it has since emerged that the DfE reported the matter to Action Fraud – the UK’s national fraud reporting centre in April. A Home Office confirmed that an ‘administrative error’ by Action Fraud led to it being classed an information report. Since the

mistake came to light West Yorkshire Police has launched its own investigation. The Home Office says the “administrative error” was only discovered at the beginning of this month. Bradford’s Liberal Democrat MP David Ward and Respect MP George Galloway have both questioned why the DfE failed to realise that the matter had not been properly passed onto the police sooner. Between them the two MPs have submitted more than 20 written Parliamentary questions to Education Secretary Michael Gove and Home Secretary Theresa May regarding the Kings Science Academy case.

Centenary celebrations

One hundred women from various cultural backgrounds gathered yesterday at the newly built mosque in Manchester to celebrate the Centenary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. The community was praised for their tremendous charity work, raising £250,000 for British charities, including East Lancashire Hospice and Donna Dream House, Stockport talking newspaper and the World Wildlife Foundation. Manchester Central MP, Lucy Powell, was one of the guest speakers at the event and commented: “This is a fantastic mosque here in the centre of my constituency. Your voice is absolutely at the heart of society, and I want to say well done for organising today.” Vicar, Jenny King, added: “Your motto ‘Love for All Hatred for None’ is surely the starting point for any pathway to peace. “I think you could put some communities to shame with how you approach your life and you looking after, not only one another but that big important person, your neighbour.”

A married couple suspected of holding three women as slaves for more than 30 years have been linked to 13 addresses across London, the Met has confirmed. Police carried out inquiries at a number of homes in Peckford Place, Brixton, where the three women had been rescued from. The three victims, a 30-year-old Briton, a 57-year-old Irish woman and a 69year-old Malaysian, are now in the care of a non-governmental organisation following their rescue last month. Officers said the women had suffered years of ‘physical and mental abuse’ with Commander Steve Rodhouse explaining the situation to reporters. He said: “We are unpicking a story that spans at least 30 years of these women's lives, and all of this requires police activity to turn that into evidence.”

Rogue PPI claim companies targeted by fines & tougher regulation

follow us on twitter:

Claims firms which use information gathered by unsolicited calls and texts or who provide poor quality services will face large fines under law changes announced by the Government today. The move marks the latest step in the Government’s work to create a financial sector that serves customers and supports British businesses. Tough new rules are being introduced as the part of a package of ongoing work by government to crack down on the rogue firms responsible for bombarding the public with misleading advertising and flooding banks with unsubstantiated claims for compensation – at a cost to other customers. To ensure that the claims management industry delivers the best possible results for consumers, the Claims Management Regulation

@AsianExpressUK & facebook:

(CMR) Unit at the Ministry of Justice will also be expanded with more enforcement staff, funded by an uplift in fees paid by regulated claims firms, and a new set of toughened conduct rules will be unveiled this week to bear down on abuses by companies. Government action has already seen the number of claims firms operating drop by more than 1,000 since a peak of 3,400 in 2011 to 2,300 now. The fines will be used to make sure that those which remain in the industry follow the rules – and that they pay for it when they do not. Justice Minister Shailesh Vara said: "We will not tolerate companies which waste hardworking people’s time and money through their own laziness, incompetence or frankly dubious practices. "We are already making sure rogue

companies are shut down – and now we are ensuring those who are wasting everyone’s time will pay for it." Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Sajid Javid said: "These new rules will put PPI claims pests in their place. "Cold call companies that bother the public will now have one less reason to do so. "This will also help free up the banks to pay legitimate claims more quickly." The fines will be brought in as part of law changes being made through the Financial Services (Banking Reform) Bill which is currently progressing through Parliament. They are expected to take effect next year, when further details on the maximum fine levels will be published. More than 1,100 claims companies specialise in helping people make claims for compensation for mis-sold

financial products (like Payment Protection Insurance (PPI)). Banks have complained that some firms are responsible for deluging them with inaccurate and incomplete claims which have caused unnecessary costs and major delays in resolving genuine claims. The new rules being published by the CMR unit this week include giving claims companies a duty to make sure the claims they are submitting have a realistic chance of success, as well as ensuring full evidence is provided to back up any allegations. Firms will also have to carry out thorough audits of how data they use has been gathered, so they can no longer turn a blind eye to whether leads have been found by illegal marketing texts and calls. Kevin Rousell, head of the Claims Management Regulation unit, added:

Asian Express

"It is our absolute priority to protect customers and we are making certain that firms are following the rules. "We do not tolerate bad practice and continue to take action against companies which break the rules, including removing their licence to trade. Issuing fines will be an important new weapon for us." As well as employing more staff to tackle irresponsible practice by claims firms, the Government will strengthen the CMR Unit by appointing independent regulatory experts in nonexecutive roles and will commission a comprehensive review of the independence of the current Claims Management Regulator’s governance arrangements.

South Asians urged to go to their doctor early if signs or symptoms are spotted

DON’T DELAY: Dr Anant Sachdev says blood in the urine can be for many reasons including infections and possibly cancer of the bladder or kidney

A new ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ national campaign was launched this week, to increase early diagnoses of bladder and kidney cancer and save lives. Receiving an early diagnosis increases the chance of survival for the 16,600 people who are diagnosed with bladder or kidney cancer every year in England. A new NHS ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign launches this week, to drive awareness of blood in urine as a key symptom of bladder and kidney cancers, and encourage people to visit their doctor if they spot the symptom, even just the once. One of the reasons people do not receive an early diagnosis is believed to be the public’s lack of

awareness of the key symptoms. Blood in urine – even if it appears just the once – could be a symptom of both bladder and kidney cancer. New figures, however, show that the public doesn’t recognise the seriousness of the sign – almost a third (30 per cent) of people would wait and see if they spotted blood in their urine again before taking any action, which could delay their diagnosis. It is also believed that within South Asian communities there are cultural and religious reasons that can prevent people from seeing their doctor early. There is often a strong fear of cancer, a perception that cancer is an incurable disease that quickly leads to death. Some believe that by talking about it is tempting fate. But finding it early makes it more treatable so if you notice blood in your urine tell your doctor straight away. Professor Kevin Fenton, Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England said: “Early diagnosis and treatment of bladder and kidney cancer can save lives. We need to overcome the barriers preventing people presenting early to their doctors so that we can save more lives across all communities. “Our message is clear – as soon as you spot blood in your urine, visit the doctor. It’s probably nothing serious but it could also be a sign of something else that needs treatment, so don’t ignore the

symptoms or put off a trip to the doctor.” Visible blood in urine is a key symptom in around eight in ten bladder cancers and over half of kidney cancers. However, when the public was asked to name cancer signs and symptoms, only a third (33 per cent) of people mention unexplained bleeding. Dr Anant Sachdev, Cancer Lead for Bracknell, Berkshire said: “It is alarming when blood is noticed in the urine - and ignoring this is not an option - see your doctor as soon as possible. “Blood in the urine can be for many reasons including infections and indeed cancer of the bladder or kidney. This must not be ignored and I would urge any person who has blood in their urine to see their doctor straight away. After an assessment your doctor may refer you to the hospital for further tests. “If cancer is found, early and timely diagnosis will result in a good long term possibility of survival.” Blood in your urine is the most common symptom for both types of cancer. Other bladder cancer symptoms include needing to urinate very often or very suddenly and/or pain while urinating. Other kidney cancer symptoms include a pain below the ribs that doesn’t go away or a lump in your stomach. The Be Clear on Cancer campaign will see new national adverts running on TV, print and

Britain’s High Streets face harsh reality

29

With the ONS retail sales figures announced recently, it is of the utmost importance for retailers to face the facts as they look to make the most of the run up to Christmas, according to Powa Technologies. Although retail sales figures have been positive with a 0.1 per cent rise after falling behind in August by 0.9 per cent, the future is not looking good for the British retail sector. Turning back the clock to the worst year for the high street, 2012 saw 54 companies fail and over 48,000 employees effected by the double dip and it looks like the future of the high street will be far worse off. The fact of the matter is that by 2018 it is predicted that a further 164 major or medium sized companies in retail will go into administration according to the centre of retail research. The research also stated that over 140,000 people across the nation are due to lose their jobs and the high street will continue to suffer as 415 town centres will loose 27,638 stores. The retail industry provides 5 per cent of the overall GDP for the nation as well account for 10 per cent of employment in the UK which has a significant impact to the wealth of the nation. Dan Wagner, CEO of Powa Technologies, which has implemented payment platforms for major brands and retailers such as Tesco, Superdrug, Laura Ashley and Heal’s spoke out today to a group of retail experts about the shortcomings of the retail sector, the hard road ahead and what could be done now to help retailers of tomorrow. Mr Wagner said: “The retail industry is very important to the British economy and should be nurtured. What retailers have to come to terms with is the fact that they will have to change and evolve if they want to keep their heads above water in the future. They also need to realise that it is time to invest time and money into making the store experience unique by having unparalleled service and a personal touch. People are already put off leaving their homes to go shopping so the experience should be exceptional.” Powa Technologies is seen as the next market leader in the mobile payment solutions sector and has recently received a huge investment to grow the business in the UK and worldwide. Mr Wagner believes that Powa’s services can be a vital part of the high streets revival. He continued, “The way that consumers view shopping has changed and retailers should learn to embrace technology, online retailers, multi channel shopping and not shy away from it. Mobile point of sales devices need be at the heart of the payment process of retailers. People are always on their mobile phone or device and it should be used to its fully capacity, having shop assistants walking about the store taking payments on mobile tills will eliminate long queues and the feeling of frustration.”

The phrase ‘Alternative Dispute Resolution’ encompasses any form of resolving a dispute without recourse to the Courts by way of litigation. Common forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) include mediation, arbitration, adjudication and negotiation. Whilst ADR is voluntary and cannot be imposed by a Court, nevertheless parties can be severely penalised for failing to engage in some form of ADR as a means of resolving their differences. In the case of PGF II SA – v- OMFS Company 1 Limited (2013), the Claimant Landlord issued proceedings against the Defendant Tenant seeking damages in excess of £1.9 million in respect of the disrepair of rented office premises. The Landlord made an offer to settle its claim at £1.25 million, which was rejected. The Landlord’s Solicitors suggested the parties should attempt mediation, to which the Tenant’s only response was to put forward an offer of £700,000 without providing an explanation as to the basis

AsianExpress.co.uk

of that offer. The Tenant did not respond to the invitation to mediate, even when this was later repeated. The day before the trial was due to commence, the Landlord accepted the Tenant’s offer upon receiving notification that the Tenant’s Defence was to be amended to include a new argument which impacted upon the case. The parties had by this stage incurred a further £250,000 in legal costs since the Tenant had made its offer. Ordinarily when an offer is accepted the accepting party is entitled to recovery of its legal costs save that where an offer is accepted more than 21 days after it has been made then the accepting party has to pay their opponent’s costs incurred since that date. In this case, the Tenant sought recovery of it costs incurred since the date 21 days after the offer had been made, but the Court found that these costs were not recoverable due to the refusal by the Tenant to mediate. The Tenant appealed but the Court of Appeal upheld

the decision and took the opportunity to emphasise the importance of the role of ADR in settling disputes not least because of the success rates of mediation and the costs benefits to the parties and to Court resources. Even if not wholly successful, the use of some form of ADR can often narrow the issues between the parties. The Court of Appeal did not go so far as to create a general principle that an otherwise successful party who has unreasonably refused mediation should pay the unsuccessful party’s costs but did note that this was an aspect of the parties’ conduct which would be addressed as part of a wider balancing exercise. This case gives a clear message to all parties to litigation that they must not unreasonably refuse to explore forms of ADR or they will risk facing what could be severe sanctions. We at Blacks can advise and assist on all types of disputes, including resolution by alternative methods.

Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed: On-the-run terror suspect to claim damages LEGAL ACTION: Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed who cut off his electric tag and escaped surveillance, has now begun legal action against the government

Thank you everyone for the well wishes. All your comments have made my day." The couple are currently in San Francisco where Amir is training. There are no details on when the baby is due yet.

The tagged suspect who escaped surveillance by dressing in a burka is claiming damages from the Government in a case involving claims of torture. Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed, who vanished from a London mosque on Friday November 1st, has launched a human rights legal challenge involving allegations that Britain was complicit in his torture by the authorities in Somalia. The 27-year-old is the subject of a Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measure but managed to escape surveillance by disguising himself as a woman and slipped out of a mosque. It has been claimed that he has been trained and fought for the al Qaeda-linked Somali group al Shabaab. The manhunt currently includes the Metropolitan Police’s counter terrorism command, MI5 and the UK Border Force. The High Court heard how Mohamed was bringing a claim against the Foreign Office, the Home Office, the Ministry of Defence and the Attorney General. Mohamed and another, referred to as CF, accuse the British authorities of consenting to their arrest by Somaliland authorities in January 2011 and then allowing their detention and torture.

Mohamed launched his damages claim under a cloak of anonymity and was referred to in court papers as ‘MA’ but anonymity was lifted following his disappearance. The Home Secretary Theresa May has insisted Mohamed, who is the second terror suspect under a terrorism-prevention measure to go missing, does not pose “a direct threat” to the public. However, it has emerged that Mrs May was mistaken when she claimed in the House of Commons that the police had Mohamed’s passport. In a statement today from the chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, the Labour MP Keith Vaz, he discloses that the Home Secretary had written to correct an answer she had given him in which she said:“I do not have his passport but the police do.” Mrs May amended her response writing: “I do not have his passport. Mohamed was not in possession of his British passport when he returned to the UK so there was no passport for the police to seize.” Mr Vaz said: “I am amazed that Home Office officials should have briefed the Home Secretary so poorly on such an important issue. When there are only eight people on Tpims they ought to know every detail about them.

“It is a worry that there may be other factual errors in the way this matter has been handled and I will seek reassurance about this. “It could well be that has another Mohamed passport and her answer has raised questions about his current whereabouts. We will be raising these questions with Charles Farr when he comes before the Committee next Tuesday.” It is thought Mohamed used a sharp instrument to cut off his tag and was last seen at the An-Noor Masjid and Community Centre in west London. Mohamed and CF were detained in Somaliland on 14th January 2011 and held until their removal back to the UK on 14th March that year. Mohamed alleges the fact the British authorities knew he was about to be arrested in Somaliland was demonstrated by the Home Secretary’s decision to apply for a control order against him “as a precaution” prior to his detention. The first control order against him was sanctioned by High Court judge Mr Justice Silber on 13th January 2011.

On parade HISTORIC: For almost 800 years, since the time of medieval King John, every newly-elected Lord Mayor of London has to leave the safety of the City of London and travel up the Thames to Westminster to swear loyalty to the Crown

By Anush Ansari

Luxury British sports car maker Aston Martin is celebrating a successful role in one of the world’s most famous parades as six of the company’s models took to the streets of London on Saturday (9 November) for the historic pageant that is the Lord Mayor’s Show. Adding more than a dash of glamour to proceedings, the stunning selection of sought-after sports cars joined the three-and-a-half-milelong cavalcade at the invitation of The Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers of London which selected the marque to participate in this, the firm’s centenary year. The Aston Martins, which included a Vanquish Coupe dressed

in the unmistakable Union Jackinspired livery of the UK Government’s GREAT Britain campaign, made their way through the capital’s packed streets at a decidedly stately three miles per hour as an estimated half million spectators looked on. Aston Martin is proudly partnering with the GREAT Britain campaign, the biggest ever initiative to showcase the very best of what Britain has to offer, driving investment, students and tourism to the UK. Joining the uniquely eye-catching Vanquish Coupe in London was the new Vanquish Volante convertible –

launched to eager buyers worldwide just a few weeks ago. Sharing the limelight in the capital were examples of Aston Martin’s four-door sports car, the luxurious Rapide S, and elegantly timeless GT, the DB9. For almost 800 years, since, the time of medieval King John, every newly-elected Lord Mayor of London has to leave the safety of the City of London and travel up the Thames to Westminster to swear loyalty to the Crown. Over the centuries the Mayor's journey has become one of London's favourite rituals, and around it grew the splendid festival

that we know today as the Lord Mayor's Show. The modern procession fills the space between Bank and Aldwych over a three- to four-hour period, cheered by a crowd of around half a million people and watched live on the BBC by millions more. The focus on Aston Martin in this year’s event continues the brand’s year-long centenary party that began in London back in January with the unveiling of a plaque in Chelsea’s Henniker Mews – original home of the company that went on to become Aston Martin Lagonda.

Would Muslims fight on the front line against their own

By Naumaan Farooq

naumaan@asianexpress.co.uk British Muslims make up a tiny proportion of Britain's armed forces. But they are vital to an organisation that wants to show military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan are not wars against Islam. We find out what the word on the street is from British Muslims and ask whether or not they’d seriously join the British Army to protect their country. When L/Cpl Jabron Hashmi became the first British Muslim soldier to die in Afghanistan in July 2006, his death prompted debate about what motivates Muslims to join the armed forces. Bradford based student Adil Mubarak said he was given masses of information during school about joining the armed forces but always felt uncomfortable with the idea of fighting against ‘his own.’ The 19-year-old Muslim said: “During career days and stuff, we always got a barrage of facts and figures from people wanting us to join the army. “I always felt a little nervous when they’d ask me, because obviously I am a Muslim and, for whatever reason, could not kill another Muslim, or any other human being for that matter. “It’s a war that’s not really

been popular anyway, and all you hear about on the news is our soldiers dying out there, what incentive can that give anybody to join up? It’s not only a religious reason, I don’t want anything to happen to me either.” However, 22-year-old law graduate Sameera Yusuf said she didn’t have a problem signing up to the army, because Britain is ‘our home.’ The Halifax trainee lawyer said: “Just because we are Muslims it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fight for our country. Those people who are threatening to blow this country up are not Muslims, they just use the name. “Surely the best way of integrating this country is to fight alongside your fellow Brits for the good of the country. A Ministry of Defense spokesman said: “Once in the armed forces, Muslims could still practice their faith as far as practicable.” “We try to accommodate people with religious beliefs as far as possible - we even have halal ration packs.” Religious perspective Leeds Islamic teacher Imran Nazir said it was a tricky situation for a Muslim to find him or herself in. He said, while it was important for them to respect their country

and integrate there was a fine line with the Islamic interpretation. “The Holy Quran teaches that whoever kills an innocent, it is as if he has killed all mankind; and whoever saves a person, it is as if he has saved all mankind. “So for a Muslim this creates problems in itself. Personally I don’t really agree with this ‘war’ anyway so Muslim or non Muslim I would be advising against anybody going out there. “I do see the problem of identity for Muslims though, although I don’t condone what these terrorists are doing, there are many innocent Muslims who are dying as well, and I don’t support that for one minute.” There are outreach programmes up and down the country aiming to recruit and engage from the Muslim community. But they’ve proved not as effective as intended thus far. ‘Not English way’ A Birmingham Imam recently said that Muslims should not fight

in the British armed forces on conscientious grounds due to their presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. Shaykh Asrar Rashid, a visiting cleric at the city's mosques, also said the Queen was "a disgusting woman" for knighting author Salman Rushdie. In 1989 Iran's leaders called for the death of Mr Rushdie for writing The Satanic Verses, deemed "blasphemous". He said: "If a foreign government invaded England tomorrow we as Muslims would defend these areas and our way of life. “It's not that I hate English people, or English soldiers who have gone abroad, or that I don't feel for the mothers of these soldiers. But the fact is they should make conscientious decisions as well. "That we must only fight wars which are in our interest, and invading Iraq and then oppressing the Iraqi people and Afghani people, is not the English way," he added. The Muslim Council of Britain, an umbrella group representing more than 500 Muslim organisations in the UK, said Muslims had a duty to contribute to the "betterment" of the society they lived in. Muslims more patriotic that Brits?

The findings of the Demos report ‘A place for Pride’ saw that 83 per cent of Muslims said they were proud to be a British citizen compared with the national average of 79 per cent. A spokesman said: "Theologically speaking there is nothing that prevents a Muslim joining the British army. “As Muslims we are ready to show respect to leaders. We may disagree with some of the things she might do and say but that does not give us the right to be insulting." Zeeshan Hashmi, whose brother Jabron was the first British Muslim killed while fighting in Afghanistan, said: “I am privileged living in Britain. One of the key traits of living in this country and being a Brit is that we have free speech. Based on that the Imam can say all of these things living in a very free society. “At the same time being an exsoldier and having lost my brother in Afghanistan, I can easily sympathise with his views.” Mohammed Beg is to become one of the few British Muslims to risk their lives for their country as he will take on the Communication Systems Operator. Speaking to The Asian Express, he said it was a proud day for him and that he didn’t think about his

religion when applying. He said: “My family and friends are really supportive of my choice to join the Army and I have had a lot of compliments crediting my determination and dedication to training. They’re all looking forward to seeing me at my Passing Out parade, we’ve been told that it’s one of the proudest moments in a soldier’s career so I expect it will be quite emotional.”

£184million boost for the area which branded itself as a ‘city coming out of the shadows’

claims UK City of Culture title

Hull has been named the next UK City of Culture and started work on a multi-million pound programme to bring the city ‘out of the shadows’. It saw off competition from rival bids by Dundee, Leicester and Swansea Bay to win the accolade which is handed out every four years. Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Maria Miller, said the announcement could "produce a wonderful mix of inward investment, and civic pride" for the city. TV producer Phil Redmond, who chaired the advisory panel that helped choose the winner, said all four shortlisted cities showed a "real understanding" of what the award was about. He said: "But ultimately it was the unanimous verdict of the panel that Hull put forward the most compelling case based on its theme as 'a city coming out of the shadows'. This is at the heart of their project and reminds both its people and the wider world of both its cultural past and future potential. "We were particularly impressed with Hull's evidence of community and creative engagement, their links to the private sector and their focus on legacy, including a commitment to enhance funding beyond 2017 and I'd like to congratulate all involved." The current city of culture, Londonderry, has seen visitor numbers double over the course of this year and has had around £120 million of capital

investment pumped into the city since the title was won in 2009. The leader of Hull City Council, Councillor Stephen Brady, said that the city would now have its chance to change the reputation that some people have put on it in the past. Hull's plan for 2017 includes an opening ceremony with 3,000 volunteers paying tribute to its heritage as a major fishing port, a light show and the planting of thousands of trees to create "sustainable gateways to the city". The council admits one of the aims of the bid is to "change the perceptions" of the city. It is often derided - up until this year regularly featuring in the satirical book Crap Towns - and last month an Economist article cited Hull as one of "Britain's Decaying Towns". The magazine said it was among a list of northern towns and cities that were "decaying, despite dollops of public money and years of heroic effort" and urged ministers to help people move away or commute from these towns to places where there are more jobs. Former Hull MP Lord Prescott tweeted "It's Happy Hour again! HullYes Well done" - a reference to the 1986 top three hit by the Housemartins, who formed in Hull. Perhaps the city's most famous cultural connection is the poet Philip Larkin who lived and worked in Hull as a librarian for many years. The city's music scene has produced names including guitarist Mick Ronson, who regularly backed David Bowie, and indie duo ‘Everything But The Girl’. Billy Liar star Sir Tom Courtenay and actress Maureen Lipman are both from Hull.

talks about his body, making movies & more…

One of Indian cinema's most versatile actors Saif Ali Khan will return to the silver screen on November 29th as a high-rolling, high-stakes gangster. The film, ‘Bullett Raja’, sees Saif essay the role of ‘Raja Mishra’, a commoner who gets transformed into ‘Bullett Raja’ - a notorious, care-a-damn attitude bad boy. With an engaging story full of twists, turns and tantalising action sequences, the film promises edge-of-your-seat entertainment with a generous helping of tongue-in-cheek humour and romance. So the Asian Express caught up with the bollywood hero to find out more about him, his body and much, much more…

Q: The action sequences in Bullett Raja look very physically demanding, did you have to get in shape for the film? A: I wasn't fit when I did the Race 2 run. I was okay but I am way fitter now and it looks different. If you are fit your body language changes. You are more agile in the kind of action you do, particularly like in Bullett Raja, it's incredibly physically demanding. It's a great

feeling when you are fit and you are looking good on camera. Q: 100 crore used to be the benchmark for film success in Bollywood but with films like Chennai Express breaking the 200 crore mark, will Bullett Raja break that record? A: Oh I don’t know, it’s so hard to tell. I am really happy with Bullett Raja and how it has shaped up. It’s a really nice movie but who knows how much it will make. CONTINUED ON PAGE 40

stars speak ahead of worldwide release

Q: Where did you shoot on set? A: A lot of the shots were on site. We shot recently in Bhuj in Gujarat, which was a very interesting experience. I was excited to head there as I have never been to Bhuj before. I never had a chance to visit that set, so I went there and I saw the place they’d actually shot. Q: What were your thoughts about not being allowed to curse in this film? A: I believe we should not curse at all and I’ve always tried to avoid cursing in all of my films, that’s why in ‘Delhi Belly’ we tried to cut out as many swear words as we could. Q: For your last film there were reports that you were not okay with the aggressive promotions for it. So in this film would you have any particular consideration for this promotion? A: Considerations? No absolutely not, when I work with Dharma Productions I know I can just leave everything in Karan’s hands and everything will be looked after. Q: Tell us about your character in GTPM? A: You have ‘Sriram’, my character, who is a very selfish, self involved guy; he doesn’t care about anyone other than himself. He wants to have fun, he is a bit of a party boy and opposites attract each other when it comes to Sriram and Dia. Q: Was your character comfortable in the village? A: No, but it is the classic scenario, he turns out to be a city boy and says ‘what’s this place?’, ‘It’s dirty!’, ‘It smells bad what is this?’. Q: How was shooting Dhat Teri Ki in Bangalore? A: Yeah, it was great, I actually grew up in Bangalore, I went to school there and Punit has never been there. So by the time we ended up in Bangalore ready to shoot, I got to tell Punit all about my favourite places, where we should shoot, what location etc…and I got to re-visit all my favourite places, all the places I used to hang out with my friends. Q: Why should people come and watch this film? A: It’s fun, it really is. Punit as a director wants people to have fun whilst watching his film and he has delivered on that.

Kareena Kapoor Q: Are you excited about your lead role? A: I am very excited about my role and I’m expecting the trailer of the movie will be well received by both critics and the audience. Q: Tell us a little about the film. A: Gori Tere Pyaar Mein is a really fun and accessible film, the last film I shot with Imran Khan, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu was a fantastic experience but the film was a little more serious, this film is for the masses. We have three to four item songs that I think everyone will enjoy, I sat and watched the trailer with my husband and we both think it looks great. Q: Tell us a bit about your character A: Her name is ‘Dia’ she works for an Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). She’s basically someone who always stands for a cause, fights for a cause. She’s the sort that doesn’t believe… well she believes in love but she wants someone to stand up for her, believes in what she believes in, which Imran Khan’s character is clearly not as you see in the trailer. Q: Are you similar to the character? Was it hard to act it out? A: No, it was fun playing the part. I don’t feel like I have the responsibility to clean up the streets, I would like that to have happened but it’s not like I took that route. But it was fun to do the role, as it’s a city based character as well as being from the village, where I was very comfortable being in the village. Q: Would you say this is the best movie you’ve starred in? A: I think every film is good in its own way. You can’t really pick and choose one, it’s unfair as everybody is putting a lot of effort into every movie, and everybody works towards a film wanting it to be the best, so I just hope people will enjoy this film. ACTRESS: Kareena Kapoor plays Dia, a hard fighting

demonstrator who wants nothing more than to fight for her cause

REHMAN By Andleeb Hanif

From being a homeless ‘no body’, living a harsh reality on the streets, to becoming an overnight vocal sensation, Usman Rehman needs little introduction to the Asian music scene. Sitting at the Asian Express newspapers head quarters, Usman is not only looking very snazzy, he’s refreshingly quick-witted and cheeky too. Many know his story about being homeless and getting involved in all the wrong kind of activities on the streets. Despite this, his following have a deep respect for his insane passion to pursue his dream of singing. I ask Usman how a lad from Bradford could possibly become homeless when the city is so abundant with Asian families. “That’s a very, very good question, actually,” replies Usman. “There was a time when I went through a phase where I felt no-one understood me because of a situation at home. I felt I couldn’t connect or relate. I was a young teenager and thought I knew what was best for me. “Once I’d left home, I was so determined to survive on my own, it became a matter of pride that I didn’t ask anyone for help. “Before you knew it, I was in it so thick and deep that I couldn’t ‘just go back home’. “I’ve lived in hostels, in council flats and all sorts. In fact, when I drive back into the city, I still get chills thinking about the temporary places I’ve lived in and the bleak days I’ve had.” The former Lapage school student, who was expelled from the establishment, also attended a private Islamic boarding school for a short time. Here he again was expelled. He says that being at the

Islamic school probably saved him as it taught him respect for elders and an understanding of who he was as an individual, and that ultimately he believes that that’s helped him survive the streets. Whatever this young man went through living on his own, his love for writing lyrics and singing stood out above everything. When fate led him to meet Archie Singh-Raud AKA Young Archie, his dream became a reality. With Young Archie’s record label -‘Boiler Room Records’, Usman was catapulted unto the audiences with a fresh take on Noor Jahan’s ‘Jadon Holi Jai’, and Rishi Rich’s magic worked beautifully in making Usman’s debut one not to be forgotten. Now after the huge success of his protege, Young Archie has hit the iTunes World Chart this week and landed in the top 10 with ‘Dil Lutiya’, written by Usman and also featuring his smooth vocals. So when asked about how it feels to essentially have been an overnight hit and the attention he gets from his fans, Usman is very humble about it all. He laughs when I ask him what kind of ‘gifts’ he is sent. “I get all sorts – but I let Lydia (our assistant) deal with all of that stuff,” laughs Usman, “…but we do get some wired and wonderful stuff sent in including explicit pictures from ladies who either want to be my girlfriend/wife or star in the next music videos. “I recently got sent this very elaborate poem, which was quite dark and seriously romantic. It did scare me a bit to be honest, but this lady was exceptionally articulate with her literary talents and I couldn’t help but admire the piece she’d sent me!”

Young Archie He ain’t no ‘freshie’ on the music scene!

Sitting in the Asian Express offices with the Editor,Young Archie is an abundance of stories about the Asian music scene. Being part of a group ‘The Young Archie Assignment’, which was nominated for Best Newcomer at UK Asian Music Awards taught him some valuable lessons about making music and led to his decision to set up his own music label. He has been drawing inspiration from all parts of a broad musical spectrum, including the likes of Swedish House Mafia, Quincy Jones and Ryan Leslie, all the way through to British Asian producer - Rishi Rich, Young Archie is diverse, exciting and different. “Luckily I had the support of my family to experiment with what I wanted to do with my life, even when we weren’t making any serious money with The Young Archie Assignment. “It took me a few years to realise what I was all about. “I knew I was onto a winner when I met Usman, as I could experiment with different sounds to his smooth vocals. “Now, I’m really passionate about experimenting with different sounds to output great tracks. “I’m a self-taught man with no official musical training, and to have had the response from the audiences is very encouraging. All I can say is… ‘watch out for more…’”

“Dil Lutiya” is an up-beat tempo in Punjabi/Tapoori style, accompanied by the hard hitting 808 drum that will only make your body tremble. It’s a guaranteed dance-floor and party smash this season.

Q: As an actor, how important is your image? A: I don’t know how important it is for an actor to have an image because an image can sometimes stereotype you. There are many other aspects that contribute to an actor’s income such as being a brand ambassador and for those aspects your image is very important, but for acting itself I don’t think it is very important. Q: Would you like to work in Hollywood?

A: It depends on the role. Right now in India I am being offered great roles and I love my job because we work really hard at what we do, but we get the time to relax also. So yes, I would like to work in Hollywood if I was offered the right role, and if it did not conflict with my work in India, I am not interested in raising my profile internationally for the sake of it, it would have to be because it interests me first and foremost. Q: In Bullett Raja you take on a completely new avatar, can you tell us a little about the movie and your character? A: The starting point for the film was the kind of films these guys have been making — Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster and Paan Singh Tomar. I don’t watch too many films, maybe I should watch more, but I’m clued into these films. Somewhere I had put it out that I wanted to do such films and I also wanted to work with Tigmanshu. And it worked out.We had met a few times and we were discussing various scripts when I finally said,‘Look I leave it to you. I’m okay with whatever you come up with’. Luckily for me, the film we zeroed in on was something really exciting. We were talking about all kinds of films but not this — it’s more of an Indian Scarface. It’s an interesting role, which involves total acting

rather than playing an extension of my own self. That’s rare. Q: This is the first time you are doing a film opposite Sonakshi, how was it working with her? A: Sonakshi’s very nice. I like her work in films. She’s genetically an industry child. They are different. They know how to act and behave and Sonakshi seems like a wellbrought up girl. Q: You too are an industry child… A: Not at all. I’m an outsider to this industry. I haven’t been brought up in a filmi atmosphere. Not that it’s good or bad — it’s a fact. We were brought up in a cricketing house. Of course, I remember visiting film sets as a child, but that was different. I had no understanding of what was going on. There’s a way of behaving in the industry which you learn. But people like Sonakshi or Kareena know it from the start.

British Asian super producer Rishi Rich collaborates with the new voice of Bollywood Arijit Singh and UK soul legend Maxi Priest for new soundtrack. Taken from the forthcoming Bollywood release 'Jackpot', 'Kabhi Jo Baadal Barse' is an unforgettable song full of heart and soul. British Asian beat master Rishi Rich has worked his magic to the

track fusing traditional Bollywood sounds with the unmistakable vocals of rising star Arijit Singh, along with the voice of British soul and reggae legend Maxi Priest. This version will also be released as part of the official movie soundtrack for 'Jackpot'. Arijit Singh is being dubbed as one of the new voices of Bollywood, after a hugely successful year as a playback singer for several hits, most notably the number one international hit 'Tum Hi Ho' from the film 'Aashiqui 2' as well as 'Kabira' and 'Dilliwaali Girlfriend'

from the summer hit 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani'. British Jamaican singer Maxi Priest is one of the best known reggae and soul artists in the world. The chart topping Londoner found fame during the 80's and 90's with hits such as 'Wild World', 'Close To You' and 'Some Guys Have All The Luck'. The two artists have been brought together for 'Kabhi Jo Baadal Barse' by a musical force who is best known for fusing the sounds of East and West. On his latest release, 'Kabhi Jo

Baadal Barse', Rishi continues: "I've worked with a lot of singers over the years and had heard of Arijit Singh earlier this year. He has a unique tone and it was great to work with his vocal on the mix with Maxi and the club mix. “The club mix was very organic, just something I started working on from home, finished in the studio and it was a very simple process and the team in India loved it and wanted to include it on the soundtrack."

You do a little bit of work and then you are at home. You shouldn’t change too much, you must still be able to get on with your own life but then put aside some time to spend with your loved ones too.

Priyanka Chopra signed up as Guess’s ‘first brown’ model

Priyanka Chopra seems to be constantly making Bollywood headlines recently. Now, the former Miss World winner actress turned singer just shot a 2013 holiday campaign with photographer Bryan Adams–yep, the musician–for Guess. “I’m like their first brown model. For a global fashion brand, for them to move their campaign into a global space, for me it’s an honor,” said Priyanka. Priyanka’s Guess campaign came about all thanks to her hairstylist who introduced her to Paul Marciano who said she reminded him of Angelina Jolie–and he instantly knew she was his next Guess girl, telling her, “You’re it. It has to be you.” When working with musician/photographer Bryan Adams– apparently he’s huge in India–the vibe of the photoshoot was “young Sophia Loren” and Priyanka says that she wanted to play characters. “I wanted every picture to speak of a story,” she said. The images definitely evoke a sense of retro glamour mixed with the classic Guess sex appeal. The actress, who has been acting in Bollywood films for some ten years now, also has an album coming out via Interscope in spring 2014 and it seems like she’s ready to take on America. She commented: “It’s scary, but I grew up partly here too. So I’m an amalgamation of both the East and West.

“I’m not too American and I’m not too Indian, but I’m a global citizen, and that’s what most people are today. And I don’t want to have to change who I am to try and fit in or cater to a certain audience.” Beautiful with a great head on her shoulders? Role model alert! She was even studying to be an engineer and wanted to work at NASA before all of this show biz stuff.

He personally visits towns where charity work is being carried out in order to distribute aid and to ensure that proposed projects are progressing and being completed. He regularly visits his home country of Malawi where he has set up mills and wells in order to help the agricultural industry. He believes that the best way to help those less fortunate is to provide them with the skills needed to enable them to earn money so that they can then lead a respectable life and not just rely on hand outs. As well as setting up his own charity work, he has sponsored British charities such as Muslim Aid and funded orphan schools and hospitals in India through the MESCO Trust. Mr Farouk is a respected figure who has built his name through trust and hard work. His focus and vision has always been to do things that would not just benefit himself and his family, but also the community at large.

WELCOMING: University of Leeds’ ambassadors work to promote Leeds to all international students (l-r) Sofia Kidy, Louise Russ, Marvic Yee, Anu Unnikrishnan

ver 70 years after International Students' Day was first marked by the International Students Council, UK universities launched a groundbreaking new film aimed at helping the most talented Indian students better understand the process of applying to the UK’s world-leading universities. Made by award-winning Indian filmmaker Ravi Lekhi, the video was directed and produced by independent and BBC journalists, Sue Emmett and Nicola Carslaw, and commissioned by the University of Sheffield. The film provides Indian students a taster of the immigration and visa application process by giving first hand personal accounts from current Indian students, Arshi Aggarwal and Angesh Anupam. 25-year-old, Arshi, from New Delhi, praised the programme and promoted

O

the message being spread. He said: “I would really like to encourage other international students just like me to come and study here in the UK. “People are extremely warm and welcoming, which has really helped to make the transition of leaving my family and friends a lot easier. Also, the application process was pretty smooth for me – I did not encounter any issues while seeking admission or after the process.” The University of Leeds is just one of the universities across the UK, who will also be promoting the film, after ranking as the top [Russell Group university] for overall international student satisfaction in the latest International Student Barometer survey. The University offers a range of activities through its Global Community which aims to bring together Leeds students from over 140

countries across the globe to learn about and engage with different cultures and languages. Jacqui Brown, Head of International Market Development at the University of Leeds said: “We offer lots of helpful guidance to make the journey to the University of Leeds as easy and enjoyable as possible. “As well as being a world class University we are located at the centre of a great city and so our advice covers both preparing to study and how to make the most of Leeds’ fantastic cultural, sporting, shopping and eating opportunities.” The video will be used by the British Council at education fairs and events across India as well as being made available on You Tube. It is hoped it will be widely shared by students themselves via social media.

Double whammy! Mercedes to showcase two of their AMG models in Toyko and Los Angeles

By Tanya Shah tanya@asianexpress.co.uk

Two motor shows, two new AMG high-performance vehicles. Mercedes-AMG is presenting the S 65 AMG and the SLS AMG GT Final Edition simultaneously at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the Tokyo Motor Show (both from 20 November to 1 December 2013). Mercedes say that the two new AMG high-performance vehicles represent the spectacular next level for their exciting model array. The S 65 AMG stands for maximum exclusiveness and is

armed with an unparalleled and dynamic beast of a V12 engine. Twelve cylinders, bi-turbo charging, an output of 630 hp and torque of 1000 Nm – the new Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG sets new standards in the motoring world. This means that the S 65 AMG would outperform all other models in its segment, with an acceleration speed from 0 to 62 mph coming in at 4.3 seconds, and a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited). With fuel consumption of 23.7 mpg (NEDC combined), the new S 65 AMG is the world's most fuelefficient V12 high-performance

saloon in terms of power and torque. The range-topping 12cylinder model already meets the requirements of the EU6 emissions standard, which is not due to come into force until 2015. Like the S 63 AMG, the S 65 AMG features a lithium-ion battery, resulting in a weight saving of over 20 kilograms. It comes with ceramic brakes, head-up display, aerodynamic elements and is simply loaded with luxury and style, the S 65 AMG comes with new technology – ‘Magic Body Control’. This clever system involves a stereo camera, which scans the road surface ahead

for surface undulations, and adjusts the suspension in advance. With the SLS AMG GT Final Edition, Mercedes are showing an ultimate, particularly attractive variant of our super sports car, which marks an impressive era to an end. The model, built in a limited run of just 350 units, represents the last opportunity for customers to order a SLS AMG – while at the same time reflecting the unrivalled success story and unique scope offered by the first complete vehicle to be built by MercedesAMG. The super sports car, with its 591

hp AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid engine, offers an exciting combination of truly exceptional design and equipment features. Ever since it was presented in 2009 the SLS AMG has been an icon of the Mercedes-Benz brand and is highly sought-after around the world. Thanks to the wide variety of models – from a gullwing model to the roadster, GT, the Black Series, an electric drive and its success in motorsport as the GT3 variant – the SLS AMG has become ever more attractive and is now one of the legendary dream cars from the brand with the star.

Juicy-looking Jag!

F-Type Coupe to make dynamic debut in LA from top secret location The Jaguar F-Type Coupé – the most dynamically capable, performance-focused, production Jaguar ever –will make its global debut from a secret location on November 19th in Los Angeles. Set for the global debut at at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 20th, the Coupe picks up after where the Convertible left off, with an all-aluminium body. The Coupé range will deliver in production form the uncompromised design vision of the acclaimed C-X16 concept (which was revealed September 2011), which was terrific, and will complement the existing 2013 ‘World Car Design of the Year’ award-winning F-Type Convertible range. Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar, said: “The excitement generated when we revealed the CX16 concept was terrific; so to now be on the cusp of what I can assure you will be a drama-filled reveal event in Los Angeles for F-Type Coupé is a

very significant moment. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to FType Convertible, but for me the purity of creating a sports Coupé is a uniquely satisfying process – and I know that both visually and dynamically, F-Type Coupé raises the bar yet again.” We won’t know the full technical details of F-Type Coupé until the LA Motor Show, but can only presume that it will be offered in three models – the F-Type, F-Type S, and FType V8S. The Asian Express predicts that there’ll be a choice of two engines with three distinct horsepower outputs: a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 producing 335 horsepower for the FTYPE. The same 3.0 then makes 375 hp for the F-Type S; and at the top of the range, in the F-Type V8S s a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 churning out 488 hp. The F-Type Coupe will go on sale in spring 2014.

BMW’s i3 gets its 1st award even before it goes on sale The BMW i3 has collected its first accolade in the UK even before it goes on sale later this month in the ‘Electric and Hybrid Car’ category in a ‘Top 100 Car list’. Lauded for its holistic approach to electric car ownership and genuine appeal, not just to those looking for an electric car, the BMW i3 trumps the competition in this new but highly competitive category. The new BMW i3 is the first model to launch within the BMW i range. Two BMW i cars are confirmed for production, the fully-electric BMW i3 megacity vehicle and the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car. The BMW i3 is BMW’s first fullyelectric production car and is due to go on sale in the UK later this month, priced from £25,680. Meanwhile, the

BMW i8 will go on sale in the UK in 2014 priced at £99,845. Like the i8, the BMW i3 features an allaluminium c h a s s i s combined with a passenger cell made entirely from carbon-fibrereinforced plastic. As well as the v e h i c l e s themselves, BMW i will encompass a range of premium services for mobility aimed at optimising the use of parking spaces, charging infrastructure, ‘smart’ navigation systems, intermodal route planning and access to other BMW vehicles on an ‘on-demand’ basis. BMW is the first premium vehicle manufacturer to offer such a comprehensive ownership package surrounding electric mobility.

RAISES PORSCHE GRAN TURISMO Combining a power output of 570 hp with an extensive level of dynamic and comfort-oriented features, the four door, four seat Porsche Panamera Turbo S epitomises the Gran Turismo concept. The new 192 mph saloon car will be guaranteed special status at the pinnacle of the range when it celebrates its world premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show (22 November 1 December). The sporting and luxurious character of the new Panamera Turbo S is evident not only in its driving performance, but also in its distinctive appearance. For example, the dynamic potential is hinted at by the 20-inch 911 Turbo II wheels, which are not only larger

but also significantly wider than the standard wheels on other models. And the metallic exterior paint colour, Palladium, that is available solely for the new model not only brings an air of exclusivity but also enhances the purposeful, elegant contours. New turbochargers and a higher injection pressure boost power by 50 hp. A 50 hp increase in power compared to the Panamera Turbo engine has been achieved through specific revisions to a number of components. Two new turbochargers with larger compressors are fitted to the Turbo S, which increase the air flow and permit more air to be injected into the combustion chambers at high

loads and engine speeds. In addition, the injection pressure has been increased by 20 bar to 140 bar. Together, both of these measures also enable higher component loads, and this in turn has been compensated by pistons made from a new aluminium alloy and specially coated piston rings. The new Panamera Turbo S is available to order now from Porsche Centres in the UK and Ireland, priced from £131,049 with the first right-hand drive deliveries arriving in January 2014. The Panamera Turbo S offers a compelling mix of sporting and luxurious equipment levels. Standard features include Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all wheel

UK-based owner takes delivery of the first McLaren P1 In a year of celebration for McLaren, this week has seen another significant milestone in an important chapter of McLaren Automotive with the first customer delivery of the groundbreaking McLaren P1. Series production of the latest addition to the McLaren range commenced over the summer, and the first car, finished in a striking ‘Volcano Yellow’ and contrasting visual carbon fibre, rolled off the bespoke production line. Following an extensive testing and development programme, McLaren Automotive has now confirmed the performance figures for the McLaren P1 in the latest stage in the launch of the groundbreaking model.

These figures show that the third model in the range accelerates to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.8 seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) in 6.8 seconds, and 300 km/h (186 mph) in just 16.5 seconds. The McLaren P1 has been designed from the outset with one clear goal: to be the best driver’s car on road and track. The confirmation of the performance figures underlines this, and gives further insight into the potential of the latest model from the Woking-based firm. Fitted with a twin powerplant powertrain generating 916 PS (903 bhp) from the highly efficient 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 petrol engine and the lightweight electric motor, the McLaren P1 storms from a

standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.8 seconds, and hits 200 km/h (124 mph) in 6.8 seconds – quicker than many hot hatches reach half that speed. The relentless acceleration, delivered as a result of the instant torque offered by the electric motors and the optimised turbos, sees the McLaren P1 reach 300 km/h (186 mph) in just 16.5 seconds. By way of a benchmark, this is a full 5.5 seconds quicker than the legendary McLaren F1. Top speed is electronically limited to 350 km/h (217 mph). Despite these impressive figures, the McLaren P1 still returns 34.0 mpg (8.3 l/100km) on the EU combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of

194 g/km. The electric motor offers a range of 11 km (6.8 miles) in full electric mode on the NEDC cycle, which sees emissions drop to zero. The braking figures are equally as impressive for the McLaren P1™, with the levels of performance provided by the bespoke Akebono system. The specially formulated carbon ceramic discs, coated in silicon carbide, can bring the McLaren P1 to a halt from 62 mph (100 km/h) in a distance of just 30.2 metres. This figure is even more impressive when compared to the recognised stopping distances, which suggests that more than three times the distance – 102 metres – is required to bring a car to a halt from 100 km/h (62 mph).

SPORT Khan continues winning streak

THE LATEST SPORTS NEWS WITH THE BIGGEST NAMES VICTOR: Haroon Khan maintained his perfect professional record with victory in Blackpool last week

By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Six months after an emphatic knockout victory in Las Vegas, Haroon Khan made a convincing return to the ring as he continued his unbeaten streak in Blackpool. The 22-year-old super flyweight cruised past Bulgarian opponent, Stefan Slavchev, in four rounds to clinch a unanimous points decision. Fighting in front of his brother, the young Bolton ace took little time to cement himself as the dominant force in the fight, with his 20-yearold opponent hardly landing a punch throughout the contest. The result was never in doubt after the fourth round, with victory seeing Haroon’s unbeaten start to his professional boxing career extended to three fights. Speaking to the Asian Express, Haroon expressed his delight at getting back in the ring. “I was really happy to be back competing and winning again,” the former Commonwealth Bronze medallist said. “It was a good test of fitness more than anything because, unlike my last fight, this one went all the way to a decision. “I won my last fight within a minute because I was fresh, coming off the back of a bout just four weeks before so I was in great condition. This time was different. I hadn’t fought for almost six months so I wasn’t as ‘ready’ as last time and so it was a different kind of test. “At the end of the fight I was happy with my fitness levels and it shows that I am ready to be stepping up to the six-round contests next where I am confident of continuing my progression.” Khan came into the fight with

little knowledge of his opponent yet controlled the fight throughout. He added:“I didn’t know an awful lot about him; I had seen some videos and clips but it’s the same with every fight, you are always going into it, not knowing everything. “You have to figure out your opponent in the first round and that’s exactly what I did. I caught him early in the first and felt comfortable in my ability from then on.” Next up for the rising star is a December bout against an unnamed opponent. With little time in between fights, Haroon now hopes to continue g a i n i n g experience in the ring and push for a title next year. “ I ’ l l take it step by step but 2014 will be a much busier year for me than this one,” he said. “I hope to have a fight every six weeks and it is my target to, some point next year, have a shot at an English title. “From now on, I know every fight will get harder and harder but that is exactly what I want. I need to continue fighting better opponents to improve and ultimately succeed.”

Leeds’ top fiveaside side return to clinch Stoke title Bacca FC may not be a household name exactly, yet their rise to dominance in national five-aside tournaments has certainly helped establish them as one of the top teams in the country. Made up of only Asian footballers, the Leeds-based outfit have travelled all over the nation to compete in competitions and their latest success in Stoke was the perfect warm-up for the big Wembley appearance next month. Competing in a charity tournament, organised by the Stoke Community Sports Club, Bacca overcame 34 other teams to clinch the top spot and walk away with the cash award. £1,000 was granted to the winners, with the Bacca players donating £200 of that back to the cause; the construction of the Gillani-Noor Masjid in Longton, Stoke. Club captain, Ismail Malik, said he was thrilled to clinch the prize yet stressed the importance of also giving back in society.

CELEBRATE: The fiveaside team after qualifying for Wembley

Albion Sports CHAMPIONS: Albion Sports celebrate winning the NCEL Division One title last year

“We are obviously delighted to have won this tournament just a month before we go to Wembley for the FA Fives National Finals,” he said. “As soon as we heard about the tournament we knew we had to be there and the fact there was a £1,000 prize for the winner was a big bonus. “The organisers were extremely

thankful for us donating £200 to the construction of the local Masjid, and it has to be said that this tournament was one of the best we have competed in anywhere in England.” The West Yorkshire outfit currently competes in the local Beeston futsal league and earlier this year qualified for the national

finals after success in the regional heats. Ismail Malik said the side has always been proud of their backgrounds and hopes the team’s success will continue for the foreseeable future. “Every time we play we are always proud to represent not only the Asian community but also the

Leeds community,” he said. “It is something we love doing and showing that Asian footballers are just as good as anybody when it comes to five-aside.” Bacca FC will next compete at Wembley on the 14th December where they will be hoping to improve on their last finals outing and win the nationwide tournament.

Little Master bows out after 200th Test

52nd Test century were becoming more and more prominent as the match unfolded. However, it seemed West Indies bowler, Narsingh Deonarine, and Captain Darren Sammy had not been given the same script. A Deonarine delivery was masterful caught by Darren Sammy at slip, and within a second the curtain came down on the legend’s 24-year career. The sold-out crowd was silenced, whilst a subdued Sammy refused to celebrate the final dismissal of one of Cricket’s greatest batsman. As Tendulkar made his final walk off the pitch, the crowd once again mustered up an emotional ovation. With every record worth holding already in the sporting icons pocket, he will

leave the game knowing that very few people will ever come close to matching his statistics. Not only is he the leading run-scorer in the history of Tests, with 15,921 runs in his 200 matches, but he also boasts the most runs in the history of one-day internationals, with 18,246 runs in an amazing 463 ODIs. Blessed with the keenest of cricket minds, Tendulkar made his international debut in 1989, aged just 16, in a Test with Pakistan. Just one year later, in his 14th innings, he registered his first Test century against England at Old Trafford. Some of his finest and most memorable performances came against Australia, the overwhelmingly dominant team of his era.

His century as a 19-yearold on a lightning-fast pitch at the WACA is considered one of the best innings ever to have been played in the cricket-mad country. A few years later he received the ultimate compliment from the ultimate batsman: Don Bradman (holder of the highest batting average ever at 99.94 runs) who confided to his wife that Tendulkar reminded him of himself. In 2000 he became the first batsman to register 50 international hundreds and eight years later in 2008 he passed Brian Lara as the leading Test run-score. Most recently, last year, when just one month short of his 39th birthday, Tendulkar became the first player to score 100 international centuries, which like

Bradman's batting average, could be a mark that lasts forever. Speaking about his career, the cricketing ace explained that it all seems like a ‘dream’. “It's hard to imagine a life without playing cricket because it's all I've ever done since I was 11,” he said. “All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years.” President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, N Srinivasan, added: “He is without doubt the greatest cricketer India has produced. “In fact, one should really say he ranks among the top of all-time great sportspersons in the world. No one has served Indian cricket as Sachin has.

“He has truly been an ambassador for India and Indian cricket. He has been an inspiration for generations of sportsmen, not just cricketers. “We respect his decision to retire, although many of us Tendulkar makes his way to can't imagine an Indian team the LEGEND: crease for his final without Sachin.” Tendulkar holds just about every batting record worth owning in the game, including those for most runs and hundreds in Tests and ODIs, as well as most international runs.

Sights set high for Yorkshire football club By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Albion Sports are fast becoming one of the top teams in the Bradford district and their latest nomination at the Asian Football Awards is just a small sign of the club’s prosperous future. Established in 1974, the side began life in the Bradford Amateur Sunday League, yet after more than three decades of success, in 2007, the side resigned from Sunday league football to focus on climbing the official Football Association pyramid. With six Sunday Premier League titles, and more than ten cup wins, it was decided that the time to compete at a higher level had arrived and thus began life in the Saturday format. In 2008, the West Yorkshire outfit were elected to compete in the West Riding County Amateur Football League and made an instant impact, successfully gaining promotion to the top tier in their first season, alongside winning the District Cup. Triumphs continued to occur as Albion Sports went on to finish runners-up in their first two seasons of top flight football, and at the start of the 2011/12 season, the side finally progressed to the official ninth tier of English football – the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL). Competing in the First Division, Albion Sports were unlucky to miss out on promotion in their inaugural

campaign, finishing just one point off the promotion places. This near miss was soon rectified the following year (2012/13 campaign) as Albion Sports cruised to the league title with games to spare, boasting the most lethal attack and defence in the division.
