MOVING: Young and old joined in the event held on Thursday, two days after the attack on a Peshawar school by Taliban insurgents
The night sky was lit up earlier this week as touching candlelight vigils were held in city centres across the UK in memory of the Pakistani children and teachers, killed in a terrorist attack. Thousands turned out throughout the last week, to remember the victims of the Peshawar school which was attacked by Taliban insurgents two days prior. 132 children and nine members of staff were killed in the attack with images of mass funerals broadcast around the world in the days that followed. Amongst those in attendance were young and old representatives, including members of the Muslim, Christian, Hindu and Sikh faith. Mohammed Rafiq Sehgal, President of Bradford’s Council for Mosques, lit his candle and stood alongside several faith leaders. He spoke of how important it now was to ensure communities stand together at these times. “An event like this can only make us stronger as one community,” he said. “We stand together in the fight against terrorism and condemn the actions in Peshawar. “What happened at the school was not a crime against one religion or community; it was a crime against humanity. “We were showing our solidarity with the families of those affected by the attacks and we pray for them together.” On Tuesday 16th December, it is reported that seven members of the Tehrik-s-Taliban, dressed in full army informs stormed the Army Public School mid-morning
Candles shine bright to remember victims of Pakistan school massacre on Tuesday firing their weapons at helpless pupils. It took Pakistan commandos around eight hours to clear the school of the threat with all attackers killed either by officers or suicide vests. As well as the moving vigil, several tributes were seen in a number of cities with the Pakistan flag in Bradford flown at halfmast following the tragedy. Meanwhile, in Leeds, a smaller gathering was seen on the same day, as a minute of silence was held outside the city’s art gallery.
Led by the Lord Mayor, Cllr David Congreve, councillors and members of the public shared in a moment of remembrance for those involved in the massacre. Cllr Congreve said: “People in Leeds and across the world have been deeply moved by the reports and images we have seen following these appalling events. “It is fitting that as a city that promotes diversity, tolerance and peace, we gather to pay our respects to those who have had their lives cut so tragically short.”

UK came within days of ‘Sydney attack’
Britain thwarted a Sydney-style ‘lone wolf’ attack just days before it was due to happen, London's top policeman said on Wednesday, saying his force had foiled five terror plots in the last four months alone. Britain raised it terrorism alert to the second-highest level in August and last month said it was facing the biggest terrorism threat in its history because of radicalised Britons returning from fighting in Syria and Iraq. “They've been very close to going and hurting somebody, badly, or killing them ... within days,” London's police chief, Bernard Hogan-Howe, said in an interview on LBC Radio. “In terms of plots over this last four months really it’s probably five. And we’ve arrested I think it’s about 35 people.”
Would-be bombers lose appeal
Four men, involved in a plot to bomb London's transport network two weeks after the deadly 2005 attacks in the British capital, lost an appeal at the European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday over claims the police had denied them proper legal advice. The men were jailed over the attempt to replicate the suicide bombings on London's transport network, on 7th July 2005, which left 52 commuters dead. Their al Qaeda-inspired attack failed because the home-made bombs they used did not explode. Three of the four would-be bombers, Somali nationals Muktah Said Ibrahim, Yassin Hassan Omar and Ramzi Mohammed, argued they had been initially refused access to a lawyer in police interviews after their arrest. They were all jailed in 2007 for at least 40 years.
China: ‘No evidence against North Korea’
China said on Monday it opposed all forms of cyberattacks but there was no proof that North Korea was responsible for the hacking of Sony Pictures, as the United States has said. North Korea has denied it was to blame and has vowed to hit back against any U.S. retaliation, threatening the White House and the Pentagon. The hackers said they were incensed by a Sony comedy about a fictional assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which the studio has pulled. China made no reference to calls by the United States for joint action with it and other countries to counter any similar cyberattacks. “Before making any conclusions there has to be a full (accounting of) the facts and foundation,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said. “China will handle it in accordance with relevant international and Chinese laws according to the facts.”

Pensioner guilty of acid attack on 19-year-old ex-lover A Wolverhampton Crown Court has convicted an 80-yearold man guilty of masterminding an acid revenge attack on his teenage ex-lover. Mohammed Rafiq had denied inflicting grievous bodily harm on Vikki Horsman, 20, who was left scarred by the attack in April this year, when she was still aged 19. Rafiq had denied arranging the attack in retaliation for Ms Horsman ending the pair's relationship early this year. Rafiq, of Cheshire Road, Smethwick, will be sentenced on 19th December. Shannon Heaps, 23, and Steven Holmes, 25, were also found guilty of plotting to attack Ms Horsman at a house in Tividale, West Midlands. During the trial, the court heard Ms Horsman had entered into a relationship with "controlling" Rafiq when she was 18. He became angered when she broke up with him, and arranged for Heaps and Holmes to attack her with the corrosive liquid. On 15th April, she opened the door of the house in Tividale, West Midlands and was met by a hooded figure who threw acid in her face. Vikki Horsman told the court Rafiq had accused her of cheating on him while they were together. She suffered "horrific" burns as a result, requiring specialist surgery to her face, neck, shoulders, and upper leg, police said. They said Rafiq, who suffered minor burns himself when he was splashed with liquid, was initially treated as a victim but later charged. He and Heaps, of Queens Avenue, and Holmes, of Allan Close, were found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Rafiq was convicted of a further charge of perverting the course of justice. Speaking after the trial, Ms Horsman told how she had been left with "life-changing" injuries. "I have had to undergo lots of treatment for the burns and the damage those people caused," she said. "The trauma and distress that Rafiq and his accomplices have put me under have left mental scars that I fear will never go

controlling relationship". "Rafiq's young ex-partner was seriously injured and left with devastating, lasting scars, which one can only presume was his intent given the nature of the planned attack," he said.

Be a ‘Christmas List Lifesaver’ A new appeal by the NHS Blood and Transplant team is calling for Asian people across the UK to become ‘Christmas List Lifesavers’ this winter by registering as organ donors. Whilst many are looking forward to unwrapping presents and spending time with their families this festive season, regardless of their religious heritage, 6,891 people on the transplant list are hoping for the gift of an organ. Amongst those, 1,077 are from Asian backgrounds, and with a low number of donors currently registered, it is hoped the festive season may allow people to contemplate giving something extra special and join the NHS Organ Donor Register. Statistics shows that people from the Asian demographic are more likely to need an organ transplant than the rest of the population yet sadly, not everyone will get the transplant they need. New figures show that 326 Asian people have died on the waiting list in the last five years because of the lack of suitable organs. Other people have been more fortunate and will be looking ahead to spending time with their families. 449 Asian patients across the UK have received a transplant from a deceased donor already this year thanks to families agreeing to donate a loved one’s organs.

Scotland Yard going to Abu Dhabi
New Scotland Yard, the headquarters of London's storied police force and one of the British capital's most famous landmarks, has been sold to an Abu Dhabi investor, paving the way for its macabre but private museum to open to the public elsewhere. The 20-storey block in central London is famous around the globe as the home of the Metropolitan Police Service and for the rotating triangular sign in front of it nicknamed ‘the revolving cheese’ by local wits. The Met, as the service is often called, is as well-known for its role as Britain's leading police force as for its links with famous fictional sleuths such as Sherlock Holmes. The sale, for £370million, is part of a trend that has seen well-known public buildings sold in recent years to tap soaring real estate prices.
Graduates going home
The UK government has indicated new plans to send back foreign graduates, who come to the country on student visas, to their home countries at the end of their courses, a move that could affect the enrolment from India in British universities. UK home secretary Theresa May is demanding that the Conservative party's next manifesto in Britain to include a pledge forcing students from outside the European Union to leave the UK and apply for a fresh visa from abroad. The move could lead to the sharp dip in the number of Indian students coming to UK, and they are set to be displaced as the second-largest group of foreign students. Presently, students largely from China and India can switch easily to a work visa and are able to work after their course ends. A British Council study found that Indians are choosing US universities over UK colleges due to strict visa norms on post-study work.
Obesity to be a disability
Europe's top court ruled last week that obese people can be considered as disabled, but stopped short of saying that obesity was a condition that needed specific protection under European anti-discrimination laws. The landmark decision will be closely read by European employers and means that companies might have to provide greater support to obese staff. The case was instigated by a Danish court, which wanted guidance over a complaint of unfair dismissal brought by a child-minder who was sacked by a local authority. Karsten Kaltoft, who never weighed less than 160 kilograms (352 pounds) during his employment, argued that his obesity was one of the reasons he lost his job and that this amounted to unlawful discrimination - an allegation the council denied.

Pig gelatine in flu spray is not just a Muslim concern
A nasal spray vaccine will helps protect children from the flu virus and reduces the chances of them getting sick and missing time off school has been met with backlash from some Muslim parents. The fluenza vaccine, which is administered as a painless and quick spray up the nose, carries traces of pork gelatine. As Muslim parents became aware of the ingredients, complaints were made and some parents refused for their child to have the vaccine. Sparking accusations of insensitivity to Muslims, Jews and vegetarians, healthcare bosses have now been criticised for not providing an alternative to the ingredient. Despite some media outlets taking this as an opportunity to make this into yet another matter of a “Muslim vs the everyday normalities of life” issue, it has not been highlighted that a great degree of research was done consulting Muslim and Jewish scholars. Over one hundred 100 Islamic scholars have agreed pork gelatine was permissible within a vaccine, as it was not being consumed orally. The World Health organisation has consulted with Muslim scholars and certified Fluenz as halal.
Rabbi Abraham Adler from the Kashrus and Medicines Information Service, who has advised the government on kashrut issues has also affirmed that according to Jewish laws, there is no problem with porcine or other animal derived ingredients in nonoral products. This includes vaccines, including those administered via the nose, injections, suppositories, creams and ointments. The public health service initiative has been rolled out this autumn to avoid children being sick and off school, missing valuable learning time. Keith Whittlestone, head teacher at Joseph Leckie School, said: “Pupils need to be present in school to be able to learn and achieve. “If they become ill, especially with something as serious as flu, they will miss valuable time off school, which will have an impact on their learning.” Many medicines, including vaccines contain traces of bovine and porcine gelatine. Gelatine is an essential ingredient to make the flu nasal spray vaccine effective. Many faith groups, including Jewish and Muslim communities, have approved the use of gelatin-containing vaccines.

FREE: One hostage flees the shop and runs to police after being held by the gunman
GUNMAN: Man Haron Monis, pictured previously, took hostages in the Lindt Cafe shop on Monday
Police storm Sydney shop after gunman standoff
Three dead after 16-hour Cafe siege A gunman, who burst into an Australian chocolate shop taking more than 15 customers hostage, was shot dead alongside two captives on Tuesday, after a tense standoff with heavily armed police. The Australian authorities charged the Lindt Cafe shop in Sydney at around 10am on 16th December, killing the suspect known as Man Haron Monis. The sound of gunfire was heard around the store, whilst explosions are believed to have been flash bang grenades, used by the police before they stormed the shop. Tori Johnson, a manager at the store, was tragically killed, according to Lindt Chocolate Cafe Australia, whilst the other hostage to lose their life in the standoff has been identified as 38-year-old mother of three, Katrina Dawson. Six people at the scene were treated
for injuries. Speaking at a news conference during the siege, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot said: “We don't yet know the motivation of the perpetrator. “We don't know that this is politically motivated although there are some indications that it could be. We have to appreciate that even in a society such as ours, there are people who would wish to do us harm.” He later added of the victims: “These were decent, good people who were going about their ordinary lives ... who got caught up in the sick fantasy of a deeply disturbed individual.” Monis was an Iranian refugee and self-styled sheikh known by authorities for sending hate mail to the families of Australian troops who had lost their lives in Afghanistan. Born in Iran as Manteghi Bourjerdi,
he migrated to Australia in 1996, and was involved once again with the law last year, charged with being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife but had been freed on bail. During the siege, hostages were seen in the window holding a black flag with Arabic writing on, and despite initial beliefs it was related to the Islamic State, these links were soon removed. Meanwhile, residents in Australia rallied around the Muslim community during the hostage taking, with many heading to the micro-blogging site, Twitter, using the hash-tag ‘#I’llridewithyou’. Garnering over 110,000 tweets in less than half a day, the message was offered to members of the Islamic faith, from individuals saying they would not be frightened, or hesitate sitting next to, people wearing religious clothing. In September, anti-terrorism police said they had thwarted an imminent threat to behead a random member of the public and, days later, a teenager in the city of Melbourne was shot dead after attacking two antiterrorism officers with a knife. The Lindt cafe is in Martin Place, a pedestrian strip that was revealed as a potential location for the thwarted beheading.

Lockerbie bomber ‘was guilty’
AsianExpress.co.uk
December 2014 - 1st Edition
Scotland's top prosecutor, Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland, has announced that no evidence has emerged that casts doubt on the conviction of a late Libyan intelligence officer for the Lockerbie airline bombing 26 years ago. However, Lord Mulholland did concede that efforts to track down others behind the deadly attack have been hampered by the violence that has rocked Libya for months. Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was the only person found guilty over the 21st December, 1988 attack on Pan Am flight 103 in which 270 people were killed. His family and some relatives of the Scottish victims believe he was wrongly convicted. He was jailed for life in 2001, but was released by Scotland's government on compassionate grounds eight years later after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Megrahi, who always protested his innocence, died in Libya in 2012. At the memorial service for Lockerbie victims in Washington, Mulholland, the head of Scotland's Crown Office, will say nothing had come to light to question Megrahi's guilt.
Women entering combat roles
Britain may allow women to fight in close combat roles for the first time from 2016, the defence secretary said on Friday, in a move that would bring the British army into line with some other Western forces. Britain's army currently allows women to serve on the front line, but does not let them join units whose main function is to engage and kill the enemy. The United States, Australia and Canada are among those nations which already have women in close combat roles. The Ministry of Defence said that women were a step closer to being permitted to join close ground combat units after a review established that mixed groups would not undermine troop cohesion. But it said further research was needed before their admission was given the green light. That research would focus on exploring the physiological demands of close combat roles and its impact on women's health.
Malala, Satyarthi receive their Nobel Prizes
Billion pound lawsuit A property tycoon has launched a huge lawsuit in the High Court as he seeks to gain ÂŁ2.2billion pound in compensation for irreparable damages to his reputation and business. UK-based property mogul Vincent Tchenguiz said he had filed a 2.2 billion pounds ($3.5 billion) lawsuit against accountancy firm Grant Thornton, Icelandic bank Kaupthing and three individuals in the High Court. The lawsuit alleges they conspired to instigate a Serious Fraud Office (SFO) investigation into him and his business activities, which was subsequently dropped in 2012 after a series of blunders. Tchenguiz's brother Robert, who was also investigated by the SFO and briefly arrested in 2011 alongside Vincent, told Reuters by email that he would join the lawsuit. Iranian-born Vincent and Robert, who are well known in London's high society, have said that the botched SFO investigation linked to the 2008 collapse of Kaupthing caused lasting damage to their reputations and
businesses. Earlier this year, they settled a 300 million pound damages claim against the SFO, which averted a civil trial and a further public airing of the agency's handling of the case, with a 4.5 million pound out-of-court deal. The individuals named in Tchenguiz's latest claim are Stephen John Akers, Hossein Hamedani and Johannes Runar Johannsson. Akers and Hamedani are both partners at Grant Thornton, while Johannsson is an Icelandic lawyer. The failed Icelandic bank had financed Vincent Tchenguiz to the tune of 1.7 billion pounds. "Grant Thornton UK LLP, Steve
Akers and Hossein Hamedani deny all of the claims made," said a Grant Thornton UK LLP spokesman. "We have all acted appropriately and in accordance with our professional responsibilities and legal obligations throughout. After years of speculation in the media, we will now have the opportunity to defend ourselves through the court process." Kaupthing said neither the bank nor Johannsson had received any communication about the claim. In an email, the bank added that the allegations had "absolutely no basis in fact or in law" and would be very vigorously contested. After the SFO dropped its investigation, the Tchenguiz brothers blamed "external influences" for the events that led to their arrest and said they would pursue those they said were responsible and liable for the damage caused. Soon after they were detained in 2011, Bank of America Merrill Lynch recalled a 124.6 million pound loan to Vincent Tchenguiz's Peverel Group, pushing the property management business into administration.
Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai, shot by the Taliban for refusing to quit school, and Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi received their Nobel Peace Prizes on Wednesday 10th December after two days of celebrations, honoring their work for children's rights. Malala became by far the youngest laureate, widely praised for her global campaigning since she was shot in the head on her school bus in 2012. Some groups in Pakistan, however, have accused her of being a puppet of the West and violating the tenets of conservative Islam. "I tell my story, not because it is unique, but because it is not," said Malala, 17, better known by her first name, which is also the title of her book and the name of her foundation. "It is the story of many girls," she said in Oslo's ornate city hall on the anniversary of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel's death. Although the focus was undoubtedly on Oslo on Wednesday, Nobel Prize winners in literature, chemistry, physics, medicine and economics were gathering in
Stockholm, due to receive their prizes from the King of Sweden later in the day. Satyarthi, who is credited with saving around 80,000 children from slave labor sometimes in violent confrontations, kept a modest profile in Oslo and even conceded to being overshadowed by Malala surrounded by admirers. "I've lost two of my colleagues," Satyarthi said about his work. "Carrying the dead body of a colleague who is fighting for the protection of children is something I'll never forget, even as I sit here to receive the Nobel Peace Prize." Arriving in Norway with friends and young activists from Pakistan, Syria and Nigeria, Malala met thousands of children, walked the streets to greet supporters and will open an exhibit where her blood stained dress, worn when her school bus was attacked, was put on display. The award could also help the Norwegian Nobel Committee repair its reputation, damaged by controversial awards in recent years to the European Union and U.S. President Barack Obama. "I am pretty certain that I am also the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize who still fights with her younger brothers," Malala said. "I want there to be peace everywhere, but my brothers and I are still working on that."

Exhibition examines devastating tragedies
Reframing Disaster This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Bhopal gas disaster in India, the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide and the 10th anniversary of the South Asian tsunami on Boxing Day 2004. ‘Reframing Disaster’ is a major project based in Leeds that seeks to consider, commemorate and support recovery for these and other global disasters throughout the start of December. It is part of the University of Leeds’ postcolonial disaster project headed by Dr Anthony Carrigan, Lecturer in Postcolonial Literatures and Cultures at the University’s School of English. He said: “At a time when the number of global disasters is
rising rapidly, it’s vital we consider both the historical legacies of large-scale catastrophes and why disasters continue to hit communities across the world so hard. “Reframing Disaster looks beyond statistics towards the profound physical, emotional, and physical fallout from disasters as communicated across art, literature and the media. “What can they tell us about how long a disaster lasts? How do communities recover from environmental devastation? And what might be done to support survivors, to campaign for justice and prevent future disasters?” A free photographic exhibition was held at The Tetley earlier this month.
Featuring work by the worldrenowned Magnum photographer, Raghu Rai, who was the first to document the Bhopal disaster, a number of unique images are available for public viewing. On the night of 2nd December 1984, a Union Carbide pesticide plant leaked 27 tons of toxic gases in the central Indian city, causing one of the world’s worst industrial disasters. To date 25,000 have died as a result of exposure to the toxic cloud, and over half a million have suffered from debilitating health problems. The project also includes film screenings, public discussions, schools workshops and a conference.
POPULAR: Mohammed is now the number one baby name in the UK, surpassing 2013’s most favoured choice, Oliver
New name tops 2014 list of baby names With the diversity of Britain’s residents continuing to expand yearon-year, statistics released earlier this week have highlighted the Arabic name of ‘Mohammed’ as the most popular amongst newborn Brits. Knocking 2013’s most popular choice, Oliver, off top spot, Mohammed leaped 27 positions into the most favoured position, above more traditional names such as Jack, in third place respectively. Data carried out by BabyCentre, a parenting website, revealed the latest trends for parents with Sophia rising to first place for girls. Sarah Redshaw, managing editor for BabyCentre, explained why Mohammed was likely to have risen so highly in the standings. “Traditionally Mohammed is often given to the first-born boy in Muslim families,” Ms Redshaw explained. “The increase of other Arabic names in the top 100 shows the ever-increasing diversity of the UK today.” As well as the traditional choices in different communities, celebrities are also
believed to influence the choice of names for newborns, with adverse effects also highlighted. In Britain, David and Victoria Beckham’s children have seen their names rise in this year’s standings with Harper entering the top 100 for the first time, whilst Romeo and Cruz have also risen, up 67 per cent and 400 per cent. Television stars, both animated and not, are also causing trends to occur with Elsa, the star of hit Disney-film ‘Frozen’, entering the charts, as well as names from popular dramas, such as Breaking Bad and Orange is the New Black. But Ms Redshaw did warn that ‘bad behaviour’ from certain celebs has seen their names become less popular over the past 12 months. “Parents are wary of names associated with celebrities who exhibit bad behaviour, the controversial pop singer Miley Cyrus being a prime example,” she said. The name Miley has fallen, as have Amy and Nick, following the release of the mystery thriller book and movie Gone Girl.

Double-decker trains
Forget double-decker buses, as in a bid to ease overcrowding, Britain may introduce double-decker trains on some of its busiest rail routes. Network Rail is considering the plan for peak services from Southampton and Basingstoke to London. Other measures include building "flyovers" to allow trains to bypass busy stations, a new terminus in London and greater use of narrow train seats, which are unpopular with passengers. The proposals have been laid out in a series of reports as Network Rail, which owns the tracks and 2,500 stations, sets out options for the next 30 years, The Sunday Times reported. Passenger numbers on the country's congested railways are projected to soar in that time, with the total number of journeys doubling from 1.6billion to 3.2billion a year.
‘Accused may be innocent’
Myanmar investigators said on Thursday they believe two Myanmar men accused of murdering two British tourists in Thailand are innocent, but witnesses who might be able to prove their innocence will not testify as they fear the Thai police. Hannah Witheridge, 23, and David Miller, 24, were found dead on 15th September on a beach on the southern Thai island of Koh Tao. Post-mortem examinations showed both suffered severe head wounds and Witheridge was raped. The murders dealt a blow to Thailand's vital tourism industry, which is struggling to recover after months of political unrest and a May coup, and the government called on police to solve the case quickly. Myanmar migrant workers Zaw Lin and Win Phyo, both 21, initially confessed to the murders but later retracted their confessions saying they had been beaten and threatened by Thai police. But Thai police deny those accusations and say they have solid evidence, including DNA evidence, against the two men who were arrested in October. Asian

Combating terrorism
Calls for clarity on the boundary between dealing with suspects and impinging on basic human rights Labour MEP Afzal Khan, Vice Chair of Security and Defence in the European Parliament, calls for greater protection of basic human rights in the search and interrogation of terror suspects in the UK and abroad. Addressing a conference on the ‘Protection of Human Rights and Counter Terrorism’ held in European Parliament on Tuesday 9th December, Khan called for ‘more clarity on the boundary between combatting terrorism and impinging on basic human rights’ and expressed concerns that particular communities were being targeted in counter-terrorism efforts. The CIA report, disclosed recently, reveals what many have been concerned about for a long time. Citizens are being arrested on arbitrary grounds of suspicion and subjected to means of torture in 'black sites' totally hidden and

On this, Khan reiterated: “ISIS is an evil that must be stopped. I have continuously called for our governments to engage the Muslim community better to defeat this self-proclaimed Caliphate and its false narrative. “The theory that non-violent extremism translates into terrorism is untrue. The problem with this claim is that it risks demonising conservative communities.” He warned however that maligning the whole Muslim community in light of terrorist activity will only be counterproductive. “We must be careful not to describe acts of terrorism as inherently linked to a faith or a

A Sweet Success Story For the past five decades, Manningham’s Sweet Centre restaurant has been providing sweet treats and Asian dishes to the residents of Bradford and beyond. On Friday 12th December, a special plaque unveiling ceremony took place at the renowned site with special guest, Hazrat Shaykh Sahibzada Muhammad Habib-Ur-Rehman Sahib Mahmoobi on hand to mark the official 50th year anniversary. The Sweet Centre has been passed through three generations of the same family since the doors first opened in 1964 and current owner, Dr Zulficar Ali, said it felt ‘great’ to reach such a milestone. “The Sweet Centre has been supported by people of all faiths, all backgrounds and all political parties since it first opened its doors,” Dr Ali said. “To now be able to celebrate
our 50th anniversary, with all the family and guests, it is a great achievement.” The business was initially set up by brothers, Abdul Rehman and Mohammed Bashir, as they brought the concept of an Asian sweet centre and cafe to 110 Lumb Lane.
Pulling together whatever money they had, even selling their own possessions, the sibling’s company excelled in the area and today, the same traditional dishes that made the restaurant so popular in the 60’s, continue to be served fresh out of the kitchen.

“Hamas should be removed from terror list” The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas should be removed from the European Union's terrorist list, an EU court has ruled, saying the decision to include it was based on media reports, not considered analysis. In its ruling on Wednesday 17th December, the bloc's second highest tribunal, the General Court of the European Union, said EU member states could maintain their freeze on Hamas's assets for three months to give time for further review or to appeal the verdict. Israel, which has clashed repeatedly with Europe in recent years over Palestinian statehood ambitions, reacted with dismay. "We expect them to immediately put Hamas back on the list," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement, denouncing Hamas as "a murderous terrorist organisation". Hamas holds sway in the Gaza Strip and its founding charter calls for the destruction of Israel. It has regularly battled against Israel, most recently in a 50-day war this summer. Most Western countries, including the United States, agree with Israel that it is a terror organisation, pointing to indiscriminate rocket strikes out of Gaza and waves of suicide attacks, primarily between 1993 and 2005. Hamas says it is a legitimate resistance movement and contested the European Union's
Financial fraud and anticorruption unit
decision in 2001 to include it on the EU terrorist list. It welcomed Wednesday's verdict. The EU court did not consider the merits of whether Hamas should be classified as a terror group, but reviewed the original decision-making process. This, it said, did not include the considered opinion of competent authorities, but rather relied on media and Internet reports. "The court stresses that those
annulments, on fundamental procedural grounds, do not imply any substantive assessment of the question of the classification of Hamas as a terrorist group," the court said in a statement. It added that if an appeal was brought before the EU's top court, the European Court of Justice, the freeze of Hamas’s funds should continue until the legal process was complete. Appeals, which can only be
based on points of law, typically last about a year and a half. The EU's ambassador to Israel Lars Faaborg-Andersen told Israel's Army Radio the body aimed to keep Hamas on the list. "Sometimes the courts come to decisions which surprise us. We need to assemble a stronger case for the listing and this is what we are going to do," FaaborgAndersen said.
Britain is to set up a specialist police unit focussed on corruption and bribery, aiming to bolster its defences against white-collar crime in the financial sector as part of a wider plan to stamp out fraudulent business practices. Banks and other financial players account for about a tenth of the UK economy's output but the sector has been damaged by a succession of scandals, making it important for the government to show it is clamping down on wrongdoing. The new unit will sit within the National Crime Agency (NCA), Britain's equivalent to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and will pull together experts from within the NCA and specialists from other government agencies. “As host to one of the world's largest financial centres, the UK has a moral duty and global responsibility to ensure that corrupt officials and organised criminals do not abuse our systems,” said Business Minister Matt Hancock. A student from Leeds whose exam results were already regarded as ‘out of this world’ has received yet another glowing accolade this past week for her achievements in GCSE astronomy. Manjari Dhar, lower sixth pupil at the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), received her award from the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) for being one of the top students in the country, who studied astronomy. The space-enthusiast’s grade put her amongst the 12 best results nationally and she was presented with a certificate by physics teacher, Michelle D’Vali last week. What is even more impressive for Manjari is that she had to study the subject in her own time, on top of ten other classes which she was already taking, in which she also achieved all A-Star grades. At GSAL, students can start the twoyear course for GCSE astronomy in year 10 or 11 and are expected to attend the classes in their own time with the help of teaching staff. Manjari was part of a class taught by physics teachers Michelle D’Vali and Derek Fry, in two lunchtime lessons per week, which also involved completing independent study. “I was really surprised to receive the
award as it was very unexpected,” Manjari said. “I was also very proud and grateful to my amazing teachers: Mr Fry and Dr D’Vali. “My favourite sections of the astronomy course were learning about the evolution of stars and the possibilities for life on other planets and in other galaxies.” Dr D’Vali said the student’s achievements were a great reflection of weeks of hard work and added that she more than deserved the national recognition. “It’s a big commitment to take on the astronomy GCSE, and Manjari went above and beyond, completing some outstanding practical work,” he said. “All those nights spent outside clearly paid off.” Mr Fry, who was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society over 30 years ago, added: “This is welldeserved for Manjari to have her achievement recognised by the most prestigious astronomical society in the world.” With glowing grades across the board in GCSEs, Manjari is now studying five A-Levels and says she hopes to go on to study either maths or natural science at university.

World’s oldest couple celebrates 89 Years of marriage!

For the past 89 years, Karam and Katari Chand, from Bradford, have been happily married, having tied the knot back in India on 11th December 1925. Last week, the great-

SYDNEY SEIGE: Newly wed bride Manal Kassem took a detour on her big day to place her wedding bouquet at Lindt Cafe site as a mark of respect to the victims of the terror attack in Martin Square
Muslim bride catches global attention
This bride has caught international attention after laying her wedding bouquet at the memorial site of the Lindt Cafe siege site in Australia. The 23-year-old, identified as
Manal Kassem from the Sydney suburb of Punchbowl, made a pilgrimage to Martin Place on her wedding day – Saturday 20th December. The site, where gunman Man Haron Monis held 17 hostages inside the Martin Place cafe, has been turned into a memorial site where thousands have laid tribute to the victims of the deadly siege. Hostages Katrina Dawson, 38 and Lindt cafe manager Tori Johnson, 34 as well as Monis were killed in the 16-hour standoff which rocked the nation last week. But at the weekend, all eyes were on Ms Kassem who was adorned in a white dress, hijab and veil when she laid her

The bride from the Sydney suburb of Punchbowl approached the expanding floral tribute on Saturday with her groom, Mahmod Homaisi, as hundreds of onlookers stared, a witness said. When Ms Kassem laid her wedding bouquet onto the ground, they erupted into applause. The bride had chosen the city for her big day photoshoot, but changed her mind after the siege, according to her wedding planner. After watching the wedding party approach, the city crowd broke into applause. The 23-year-old bride had chosen the city for her wedding photoshoot, but was hesitant after the siege, says her wedding planner. "She was going to cancel (the photoshoot) because she didn't want to be judged... celebrating her wedding in a scarf while people were terrorised," wedding planner Dina Kheir told press. Acknowledged by many as the world’s longest married couple, the pair are still in good health and enjoyed celebrating their latest anniversary. Paul Chand, one of the couple’s eight children, shared the secret to his parent’s longevity of marriage which he believes comes down to one thing. “It’s understanding each other, that’s the secret,” he said. “My mother and father have been together for 89 years now and that is because of a lot of reasons but their understanding of each other is key. “I’ve never seen them really argue, they just get on with things and always try to stay happy. I think the saying is ‘don’t cry over spilled milk’ and they live by that. “With the grace of God they will be celebrating their 90th wedding anniversary next year and that is an amazing achievement for anyone.” Having lived through some of the most important world-changing events in the last century, 109-year-old Karam, and 102-year-old Katari, have also been kept up to date with changes in technology through the help of their family. “We were able to speak with family all over the world via the internet last week on the anniversary,” Paul explained. “My father didn’t understand how it was happening at first but we soon had people from a number of countries talking at once. It was really nice to see.”
UKIP aiming for power The United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) may have been hit by race and sex scandals five months before a national election, but the publicity hasn't dented its popularity and the party's dream of being kingmaker in a coalition remains alive. Prime Minister David Cameron called UKIP, which wants Britain to leave the European Union and for immigration to be sharply curbed, ‘fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists’ in 2006. But UKIPhas thrived politically since, taking rivals by surprise. It won European elections in Britain in May and then poached two of Cameron's Conservative lawmakers who won back their seats as UKIP candidates. It has also put immigration on the agenda, forcing rivals to talk about an issue they'd previously ignored. With May's election likely to be one of the closest in modern British history and neither of the main parties looking likely to win outright, UKIP hopes to do well enough to hold the balance of power.

Indian car magnate donates £200,000 to the Gandhi statue

The Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust has just received £200,000 – the largest donation so far towards the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Parliament Square, London. The donation is from Rahul Bajaj, chairman of Bajaj Auto, to the trust established by Professor Lord (Meghnad) Desai to raise funds for the Mahatma Gandhi statue which will be sited directly opposite the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. Professor Lord Desai said: “This is a wonderful gift for the trust just before the New Year.
“Rahul Bajaj epitomises the best of Indian industrialists who have seen the transition of India from colonial rule to independence. “When he called me a month ago to express his desire to donate, he was straight-forward and impressive. He was happy to give the donation because he is a true Gandhian, and a believer all of his values. “The Bajaj family has been associated with Gandhi for a long time. It is fitting that Rahul Bajaj has made this tremendous gesture.” The trust expects all the

money required for the statue to follow swiftly from this major donation. Small and large donations continue to flow in through the website of the trust at www.gandhistatue.org from followers of Mahatma Gandhi in the UK and the rest of the world. With these donations from the general public, as well as pledges still coming in from larger donors, the trust is confident of completing its entire fundraising in January – and will be ready for the unveiling of the statue shortly after that.
Twenty giving volunteers from Sheffield picked up their shovels and put on their gardening gloves last weekend as they helped the nationwide youth group surpass a huge milestone. Under the name, ‘Muslims for Humanity’, the volunteers were joined by representatives from Sheffield City Council and the local community as their 100,000th tree was planted. Similar initiatives were also being held in St Albans, Hartlepool and Derby during the day of action with more than 300 volunteers taking part nationally. As a central part of the group’s faith is to serve the environment through various means, the project was derived as an active way of getting youths involved with nature. Children as young as fiveyears-old have been involved in the project since its inception with parents on hand to also help in voluntary roles. Shahzad Ahmad, an AMYA youth leader, said to reach the 100,000 tree milestone was a huge achievement that would have an ‘enormous’ impact on the environment. Explaining further about the initiative, he said: “Our volunteers have been working hard to plant as many trees as possible. “We are committed to doing our bit to improve the environment and beautify the local communities we live in. “It is a cause close to our hearts because Islam places enormous emphasis on taking care of the environment and particularly on the planting of trees.” Dr Lukman Ahmad, regional co-ordinator for charity, community and welfare programmes, added: “It is particularly important to us that we bring as many young people to these events as possible so that they can gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the environment.” Meanwhile, other initiatives the group help spearhead include: youth training, homeless feeding, charity events, disaster response, elderly home visits, blood donations, collections on behalf of other UK charities and interfaith dialogues.

Murder case collapses Four year case dismissed due to ‘no evidence’ Shrien Dewani, the millionaire British businessman who was accused of orchestrating the murder of his new wife on their honeymoon four years ago, has been sensationally cleared by a South African Court of all charges. At Cape Town’s High Court on Monday 8th December, Judge Jeanette Traverso said there was ‘no evidence’ on which to convict the widowed husband. She said that the statements from his three co-conspirators was ‘riddled with inconsistencies’ and that it was impossible to tell ‘where the lies end and the truth begins’. Back in November 2010, Mr Dewani and his wife, Anni, were carjacked whilst in a taxi driving through a Cape township at night. He was allegedly forced from the car at gunpoint, along with the taxi driver, whilst his new wife was found the following day, still in the backseat of the car, with a single bullet to the throat. It was when the taxi driver was questioned that he claimed Mr Dewani arranged his wife’s murder, asking him to find two hitmen in exchange for a total of R15,000 (£900). One of the hit men, and a middle man who put the conspirators in touch with each
other, also gave evidence against him. For more than four years, South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority fought for Mr Dewani’s extradition from the UK and said despite the case being dismissed so early, it did not mean the defendant was an ‘innocent man’. “To say we’ve got an innocent man is an unfair statement because he was implicated by three witnesses and we are relying on those witness and the court can only pronounce on those witnesses,” he said. “He didn’t testify. If he did testify and the court believed his version it would be a different story. But we do not know what his version was except what was put to the witnesses.” The family of Anni Dewani said they were ‘deeply disappointed’ following the court ruling and that the lack of answers from the trial would only result in more sleepless nights. Speaking after the case was dismissed, Mrs Dewani's sister, Ami Denborg said: “Today we feel as a family that the justice system has failed us and we are deeply disappointed. “We came here looking for answers and we came here looking for the truth and all we got was more
questions. “We waited patiently for four years to hear what really happened to Anni and to hear the full story of what happened to our dearest little sister. “All we wanted was to hear all the events and the hope of actually finding that out has kept us, as a family, going. Unfortunately we believe that this right has now been taken away from us.” Ms Denborg added: “Today we feel really, really sad, because we never heard the full story of Shrien. We heard that Shrien has led a double life and that Anni knew nothing about it. “And we just wish that Shrien had been honest with us and especially with Anni. “The knowledge of not ever knowing what happened to my dearest little sister on the 13th of November 2010...that's going to haunt me, my family, my brother, my parents, for the rest of our lives. “We've had four years of sleepless nights and ...will we ever be able to sleep?” SADDENED: Ami Denborg, Anni Dewani’s sister, spoke through tears outside court, saying the family were ‘deeply disappointed’
CLEARED: Shrien Dewani was told he could return to the UK immediately following a trial which took four years to arrange yet just a couple of hours to complete
Police issue apology to Sikh taxi driver over turban burning incident
British police have apologised to a Sikh taxi driver for not taking seriously a vicious hate crime last year when a group of drunken women attacked and racially abused him before ripping off his turban and burning it. The attack happened in September 2013 in Bishops Worth when the five drunken women wanted a free cab ride home to Swindon as they did not have enough money. But when asked to leave the cab they refused and attacked the Sikh driver, racially abusing him before ripping off his turban and burning it. When the police were called, they seemed more keen to move the driver on and did not show a willingness to take action such as looking actively for the perpetrators – who were hiding nearby. Only on the insistence of the taxi driver did the officers’ search in the vicinity and with the driver’s support apprehend the culprits. The taxi driver went to the police the following day to get an update but was not satisfied with their response. After months of chasing by the victim and the assistance of an anti-hate charity, they were eventually informed by the officer in charge that he had decided to issue a mere caution to just one of the five offending women. The other four women who were involved in the attack were never prosecuted or even cautioned. Avon and Somerset police admitted they should have charged the offender rather than hand out a police caution. The eight-month campaign by the Sikh community in Bristol and later by the charity called Stand Against Racism and Inequality (SARI), the case was heard in court and led to a conviction. The victim has called for assurances that police take hate crime seriously. The victim, who does not wish to be identified, said: "This attack has affected the whole of my family, the children are
very, very scared, my wife is afraid to let me go out of the house, thinking that I am going to be attacked again." Interim director of SARI, Alex Raikes, said: "They (the police) didn't appreciate that it is like an attack on a person, for a Sikh it is very similar to a serious sexual offence, it's horrendous, it's a massive impact. “This result has been a long time coming. “It has taken over a year to reach resolution for those affected. “This is a case where escalation to senior officers was unfortunately necessary. “SARI hopes that the learning from this case can now be used to inform learning and training development for police officers responding to race and faith based incidents – especially to taxi drivers who are particularly targeted whilst delivering an important service to our local communities. “We also hope that sharing this story will send out a clear message to the wider community – those who are victims and those who may be capable of perpetrating hate crime that Bristol must have zero tolerance to this cancerous form of personalised attack. “We will now be working jointly with the victim and his representatives and the authorities to ensure this case makes a positive difference to future policing of religious based hate crime in our City.” Ch Supt Jon Reilly, Area Commander for Bristol, said: "The officer made a judgement call that a caution was the appropriate disposal which is a form of sanction, but actually that judgement was wrong and it should have been put before court." He said the subsequent delay was due to rescinding the caution and waiting for the case to be heard in court. The defendant pleaded guilty to a public order offence on 21st November at Bristol Magistrates' Court.

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol celebrate 20 years of their epic ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ love story
screening week of DDLJ Bollywood’s much-loved on-screen couple Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, came together at Yash Raj Film Studios on 13th December to celebrate the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema. The iconic ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ (DDLJ) directed by Aditya Chopra, is an epic ode to love and has been screening at Mumbai’s famous Maratha Mandir cinema for 1000 weeks consecutively since it hit cinema’s world-wide in October 1995. Since the movie’s release, the cult-classic award-winning love story has won the hearts of millions, and it’s influence is considered the benchmark for all love stories produced in Bollywood. “It's been 20 years for this film and I feel honoured that I was part of this film,” commented Shah Rukh Khan.
He added: “It's been 100 years of Indian cinema and I would say one-fifth of it belongs to DDLJ.” The DDLJ pair recreated the ‘DDLJ magic’ as they effortlessly recalled all their fond memories from the film, enacted scenes and recounted dialogues. It seemed like it was only yesterday that the actors worked on the movie. SRK, carrying Raj’s trademark knapsack, filled with memories still reverberating with audiences even today, along with Simran, the ever-bubbly Kajol, shared never before heard movie trivia and anecdotes about director Aditya Chopra and producer Yash Chopra. There was ever a spontaneous request at YRF Studio’s to the wife of the late Yash Chopra, Pam Chopra, who was in the audience, to sing the still popular ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana Sanam’. The celebrations continued with the unveiling of the very exclusive and special coffee table book written by the private and reclusive Aditya Chopra, about the making of DDLJ. This marks the first time that Aditya Chopra has shared his thoughts about the creation of this extraordinary film.

National Theatre opens gripping tale of Mumbai poverty and ambition Kabir and Parveen Bedi
Captivating This month saw the cast and crew of ‘Behind the Beautiful Forevers’ deliver a captivating performance to a celebritypacked audience. The National Theatre opened its doors to stars of the screen and stage including; James Bond star Kabir Bedi, Eastenders stars Nitin Ganatra, Himesh Patel and Rakhee Thakrar, Seema Pathan of The Wright Stuff, BBC presenters Yasmin Khan and Naga Munchetty and actors Kulvinder Ghir, Shivani Ghai and Valmike Rampersand. The latest production from the National Theatre, ‘Behind the Beautiful Forevers’ tells a gripping tale of poverty and global ambition in the Mumbai under-city. Following the lives of the slum-dwellers of Annawadi, one of Mumbai’s most impoverished, ramshackle slums, the play captures the humanity of an underclass fighting to survive the violence, greed and corruption of the rapidly changing world around them. Directed by Rufus Norris and written by
David Hare, the hard-hitting new play, which combines gritty reality with dark humour and a punchy soundtrack, is based on the original award-winning book by Katherine Boo and stars Meera Syal with an impressive supporting cast. The new production is running at the National Theatre from 19th November, and is currently booking until 13th April. Part of the Travelex £15 Tickets season, half the tickets for every performance are £15. It will be broadcast to UK cinemas by National Theatre Live on 12th March.
On his first visit to India, Imran Khan, who took the UK by storm in 2009 with his ‘Unforgettable’ album which was undeniably packed with hugely acclaimed songs, was questioned about what took him so long to work with the Indian film industry. The 30-year-old from the Netherlands has just released his song, titled ‘Let's Celebrate’ from Sanjay Kapoor’s film ‘Tevar’, which is most definitely set to be the next big dance floor track. Talking about his rebellious teenage years and his humble upbringing from a Pakistani household, Imran is not shy to admit to his faults from the past. “My parents are originally from Pakistan. My dad was in a government job, where, when people without a family died at home, my dad and his colleagues were sent to pick up all their stuff and auction it. “For him, it was a big thing, having come from Pakistan and just established himself there. “My mum is a housewife. Initially, I was only interested in sports. Music was a side thing. I was always outside the house playing football and basketball and was very naughty. “At the time, even though I had no money, I was always chilling. I could just not sit at home, not even for ten minutes. “My parents had no hope for me and did not know what to do with me. My other two siblings, both went to school and were into education. “My parents could not control me, so they sent me to a special school, but that too did not help. They would hit me and I would sometimes even hit my mum back.” But in 2011, Imran overcame a drunken life-threatening fall in Dubai, and it was then that he decided it was time he turned his life around. “I would drink ten bottles at a time. “I had a bad accident in Dubai a few years back and now, I don't drink at all. “I was so busy doing shows, drinking and chasing money that I fell down the stairs and had a blackout. I broke my head, my ribs, everything. I was almost dead and had blood on my brain. “I was out of action for a month, but it was God's warning to me, and

Ungli is directed by avant-garde filmmaker and scriptwriter Rensil D’Silva, who is responsible for some of Indian cinemas most thoughtprovoking screen hits, includingKurbaan, Rang De Basanti, Student Of The Year and the Indian version of awardwinning US TV show 24. Perfectly capturing the current mood in India of curbing corruption, bribery and intimidation in the upper echelons of power and authority, Ungli is a beautifully acted and directed narrative that conveys in an effective and humorous manner how five ordinary citizens can make a difference in a city blighted by dark forces, as they literally give the proverbial ‘finger’ to the corrupt and dishonest. Director Rensil D'Silva says it was not easy to direct Sanjay Dutt for upcoming film 'Ungli' at a time when the actor was getting ready to surrender and serve his remaining jail term in the 1993 bomb blasts case.

India’s fourth largest airline’s planes ‘grounded’ IN TROUBLE: Indian-operated SpiceJet Boeing 737-800 aircraft is India's fourth-largest airline by market share
Seeing the wood for the trees
S
ection 994(1) of the Companies Act 2006 allows a shareholder to take court action where they feel that a company has been or is conducted in a manner that is unfairly prejudicial to the shareholders. The case of Maidment –v- Attwood and Others demonstrated that it is not only the directors of big companies and banks who are awarding themselves a big salary. The case highlighted that shareholders in smaller companies need to be mindful of the duties of their directors particularly when there is only one. However the Court of Appeal held that there is no obligation for shareholders to take steps to investigate the activities of the company’s directors when considering whether they have been unfairly prejudicial to its shareholders. In this case the minority shareholder, Mr Maidment brought an action under s.994(1) of the Companies Act 2006 alleging that his interests had been prejudiced by the breaches of Mr Attwood’s duties as a director. The main breach being that Mr Attwood awarded himself approximately £780,000 in salary over 6 years when the company had made profit in only three of the six years. One year Mr Attwood awarded himself £145,000 salary when the companies had made a loss of approximately £170,000. At first instance the Court held that although Mr Attwood’s remuneration was excessive, it was not unfairly prejudicial to Mr Maidment as his salary was disclosed in the company’s annual accounts. Not surprisingly Mr
Maidment had not been sent the company’s full annual accounts as he should have been, however the Court held that these accounts were available on Companies House. The Court held that Mr Maidment could not complain that an act amounted to unfair prejudice where, if he had been diligent, he could have discovered Mr Attwood’s salary through Companies House. The Court of Appeal however overturned this decision as it meant that shareholders are at risk of losing their rights to claim for unfair prejudice under s.994(1) if they do not look at the filed accounts. It imposed an additional requirement under s.994(1) on the shareholders and this had no basis in statute or previous case law. The Court of Appeal held that Mr Attwood had in fact breached his duties as a director and in doing so his conduct was unfairly prejudicial under s.994(1) of the Companies Act 2006. The matter was complicated by the fact that the company was insolvent at the time of the petition and Mr Maidment’s shares were effectively worthless. However the Court is willing to take a wide view of the prejudice that may be suffered by a shareholder and they are flexible in their approach. Otherwise the ramifications of the decision at first instance would expose minority shareholders to the unfair consequences of dishonest directors without any proper recourse. We at Blacks have experience of dealing with Company disputes and specialise in Insolvency Law.

India's troubled airline SpiceJet has grounded flights after oil companies refused to refuel any of its planes, reports say. The debt-ridden carrier owes money to creditors, including oil companies. SpiceJet is India's fourthbiggest airline by market share. Civil aviation authorities gave SpiceJet a reprieve when they said stateowned oil companies would be asked to give credit to the cash-strapped airline for up to 15 days. The civil aviation ministry also said that banks or other financial institutions would be asked to lend up to $94m (£60m), backed by a personal guarantee of SpiceJet chairman
Kalanithi Maran, a wellknown media businessman. The ministry said the measures were aimed at avoiding a collapse which it said would be a "major setback" for the airline industry. Correspondents say the government hopes to save jobs and prevent a repeat of the high-profile collapse of Kingfisher Airlines which was grounded in 2012. It is not clear, however, why oil companies have refused to refuel SpiceJet planes after Tuesday's announcements. "Not even a single flight has taken off this morning due to fuel supply issue with the oil companies," sources in the SpiceJet told
the BBC on Wednesday. SpiceJet has $314m (£200m) in debts and it is looking to raise funds. The company has been unable to pay its dues to staff, airports, tax authorities and its lenders. The airline, which has been making losses since last year, is also battling refunds for customers and forced flight cancellations. It has already cut the size of its fleet by a third since September and cancelled dozens of flights a day for the rest of the year. Many analysts think SpiceJet's collapse is inevitable - that the problems are too fundamental to turn around without massive investment.

Limited Edition Aston Martin commissions six exclusive sports car to celebrate 60th anniversary
SPEACIAL: Six bespoke models will be produced to celebrate Aston Martin Works’ 60th anniversary
Aston Martin Works, which marks its diamond jubilee in 2015, is celebrating 60 glorious years with the commissioning of six limited edition sports cars. The six bespoke cars, all versions of the current Vanquish super GT in either Coupe or Volante form, are being created in association with the luxury British brand’s Gaydon-based design team, and its ultimate personalisation service: Q by Aston Martin. Each of the six cars will be subtly
different, and each is tailored to reflect one of the six decades being celebrated. The result is a collection of rare and ultra-desirable sports cars that will be instantly recognisable as ‘Works 60th Anniversary’ models. A number of elements distinguish the Anniversary cars including trim and paint colour treatments, but perhaps, the most emotive part of each car comes in the form of a fine detail: bespoke rotaries around the major controls

in the centre console of each Vanquish. The process of creating the bespoke Aston Martin Works 60th Anniversary Limited Edition Vanquish models began way back in July of this year, as the Works team met with designers from Aston Martin’s Gaydon HQ to scope out their plans.
Unique features in the anniversary cars include: rotaries made from worked metal of a heritage model piston from the relevant era; distinctive Anniversary Yellow accents on the side strakes and alloy wheels; White/black Duotone seat centre panels; unique sill plaques depicting the era the car relates to and featuring the Works Anniversary logo; distinctive colour and trim treatments that include features such as contrast yellow stitching in
the leather, and new heavy weave carbon fibre. The cars of course retain the standard technical features of the Vanquish super GT such as its 6.0litre V12 petrol engine mated in a pioneering transaxle layout to the latest generation Touchtronic III eight-speed automatic gearbox. This provides the Vanquish with genuinely spirited performance: the 0-60mph time is a mere 3.6 seconds and the maximum speed tops 200mph.

Which is your regions most desirable car Region by region
A list that has been published this week, gives us a breakdown of the most desirable used cars in each region of the UK, and it seems us Yorkshire folk simply love our Range Rover’s. The models in the final listing are based on those that are in high demand and relatively low supply, presenting the greatest opportunity for dealers to sell quickly. Desirability scores are based on an advanced algorithm from Auto Trader’s i-Control. It analyses a range of metrics from gross margin potential and average market speed-of-sale, to stock volumes, availability and consumer demand. Millions of data sources have been churned into a score presented from 1 to 5 for any used car on the market. A score of five is assigned to the most desirable models with one for the least. The figures are updated weekly and in all but one of the regions listed below (Eastern Scotland) the top car has changed in the last seven days.
“This is the first time we’ve published a list of the most desirable cars by region,” said Tim Marriott, Auto Trader trade solutions director. “And there are some interesting trends. Range Rover and MINI derivatives are in highest demand in three regions, with a further three top spots being taken by Vauxhall’s Meriva and Mokka. “But while interesting, we should also be clear that this is just a snapshot of the current market,” he added. “Desirability scores for more than half of the models on sale change month-bymonth, so dealers can’t afford to stand still. iControl constantly tracks the live market, to keep dealers up-tospeed and to ensure the stock they buy is always working hard for them. It also helps them manage their forecourts, by recommending price changes to align with the live market.” A wider analysis of i-
Control desirability data reveals a significant proportion of dealer forecourts with stock that is not in high demand locally. 20% have forecourts that return an average desirability rating of 2.4 or less. Only 1% report an average of more than 4.0 for their forecourt stock with a further 8% returning a solid rating of between 3.5 and 3.9.

First Ferrari Sergio delivered The world’s first Ferrari Sergio was delivered to its new owner, the SBH Royal Auto Gallery in the UAE, at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit, where the Finali Mondiali Ferrari are being staged and which is home to the Ferrari World theme park. Designed by Pininfarina, just six of this incredibly limited edition roadster are being built. The car was created to celebrate the spirit and core values of the historic Cambiano company in the 60th anniversary year of its collaboration with the Prancing Horse. Needless to say, Sergio was the only possible choice of name for the model, in homage to great Sergio Pininfarina, who sealed the unique, longstanding partnership with Ferrari. The Ferrari Sergio is a genuinely radical car. It is both exclusive and spare in the sense that every single element aboard is focused entirely on performance. An authentic open-top, it explicitly references the track, underscoring and intensifying its sense of sportiness, fun behind the wheel and the pleasure of design at its purest. The Ferrari Sergio’s performance and dynamics are excellent in the extreme too. It is based on the 458 Spider and retains the latter’s technological content as well as all of the functional aspects of its cockpit. It is powered by the latest 605 hp version of Ferrari’s naturally aspirated 4497 cc V8 which has won the International Engine of the Year award on three consecutive occasions. This power unit also guarantees the car sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds. The Ferrari Sergio has an extremely simple, clear style. Both its volumes and treatments of its surfaces reflect the spirt of Pininfarina’s 1960s and 70s creations for Ferrari. Its proportions have been pushed to the extreme with the front of the car seeming to penetrate the rear which itself projects forward. The result is an exceptionally sculptural, threedimensional take on the classic roadster. The two bodyshell masses are melded together via a longitudinal black insert, the main styling cue of the design. The flank is also characterised by the same black longitudinal element which acts as both a dividing and unifying element
between front and rear. The two sections of the car flow effortlessly into one another resulting in sublimely harmonious yet extremely muscular forms. As with all Ferraris, the Sergio’s design was never an end in itself but is a marriage of function and aesthetics. The semi-floating development of the front spoiler beneath the bonnet balances downforce and optimises heat exchange. The roll-bar is a modern take on the classic Ferrari flying buttress and negative rear window. Integrated into the roll-bars are the air intakes for clutch and gearbox oil cooling. Lastly, the rear nolder and rear extractor generate downforce, adding an efficient finishing flourish to the car’s design. At the front of the car, Pininfarina has integrated the headlights in a classic move, turning them into a single transparent transverse element, a signature of the car’s extreme formal purity. At the rear, the circular tail lights are another modern nod to Ferrari history. The two-tone theme continues on both the front bonnet and rear deck with the latter featuring the iconic circular air vents seen on other iconic Pininfarina creations from the past. The cockpit is pared-back and functional in the extreme with the engine compartment actually hugging the backs of the seats. The example delivered to Abu Dhabi has three-layer red exterior paintwork and an extremely sporty cockpit with black leather upholstery with contrasting red stitching, Alcantara seat inserts, and extensive carbon dash and door well trim. It also features Sergio-specific forged wheels, in this instance gold in colour with a diamond finish. Each one of the six Ferrari Sergios was configured by its owner in dedicated sessions at the Tailor Made atelier in Maranello where clients are invited to personalise their cars to their own individual tastes. The atelier offers enormous freedom of choice in terms of colours, materials and finishes. As a result, every detail is extremely exclusive, thereby continuing the Prancing Horse tradition begun in the 1950s and 60s of creating bespoke cars minutely tailored to each client’s wishes.

Engineered for grip and agility There’s no mistaking the sense of purpose in the styling of the new Lexus RC F coupe, a car that projects its high performance qualities in every carefully crafted curve and plane. Looking good is one thing, but Lexus’s focus was to produce a design that also fully supports the car’s dynamic potential. Right from the prototype stage, the Lexus RC F was evaluated on race tracks around the world, including Fuji Speedway (true to the car’s sporting Lexus “F” designation) and the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Every aspect of the RC F, from its footprint on the road and its body rigidity, to its suspension, brakes, steering and chassis electronics, was designed to achieve the best grip and agile handling. Although the RC F has relatively compact overall dimensions – 4,705mm long, 1,845mm wide and 1,390mm high – its 2,730mm wheelbase, 1,555mm front track and 1,560mm rear track give it a surprisingly large road footprint, helping maximise the car’s dynamic potential. The bodyshell follows the example set by the Lexus GS in being particularly strong and rigid, tuned for stability at high speed and promoting ultra-precise handling and steering in all driving conditions.
To increase cabin strength and handling stability, key structural elements have been made more robust and additional reinforcements have been added in key areas. The way in which the body shell is assembled, also plays an important part in overall strength of the coupe, and the reduction of vibration and cabin deformation too, for example the use of body adhesive in panel joints, additional spot welding points and laser screw welding. The RC F is equipped with double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, honed during extensive
track testing. The front suspension features forged aluminium upper and lower arms, and the rear suspension geometry has been defined exclusively for the RC F with a revised geometry and strategic use of aluminium to reduce unsprung weight. Together these measures ensure outstanding responsiveness, with crisp turn-in and well controlled, progressive body roll, while maintaining the smooth, pliant ride that’s to be expected from even a high-performance Lexus. The RC F’s electronic power
steering is designed to achieve excellent dynamic performance and steering feel. A damper-less intermediate shaft has been added to the steering column to increase system rigidity and secure a high degree of responsiveness to steering input. The new shaft features an expandable/contractible stroke mechanism to absorb shaft length changes when driving. This gives a smoother steering feel and a reduction in response lag. The RC F has an all-new Brembo brake package, with improved cooling and a vertical G-sensor integrated in the ABS.
At the front there are 380 x 34mm discs with opposed six-piston aluminium callipers; at the rear the discs measure 345 x 28mm, with opposed four-piston aluminium callipers. Using integrated aluminium monobloc callipers provides high rigidity while also reducing weight. The ventilated front discs are slotted rather than drilled, helping to keep the brake pads clean and their effectiveness consistent under all driving conditions. The front discs are equipped with spiral fins which, in conjunction with improved cooling duct efficiency, ensure excellent cooling performance. The adoption of a G-sensor is a direct result of testing at the Nürburgring. It means the system can allow for changes in vertical loads, and hence optimise braking force control the instant load returns to the tyres after jumping a crest. The RC F runs on 19-inch forged aluminium wheels. Two designs are offered to UK customers: the RC F uses rims with five pairs of double thin spokes, each with a machined finish; the RC F Carbon has wheels with twin sets of 10 spokes, the inner series set 30 degrees ahead of the outer. The RC F is available to order now, priced from £59,995. UK customer deliveries will begin in February.

Aston Martin debuts its very unique DB10 for 007
An Aston Martin, which was created specifically for the new Bond film demonstrates the breadth of the brands’ bespoke capabilities. Aston Martin together with EON Productions, the producers of the James Bond film franchise, unveiled Bond’s stunning new car, the Aston Martin DB10, on the 007 stage at Pinewood Studios. The luxury British sports car brand confirmed that James Bond will indeed, once again, drive an Aston Martin in ‘Spectre’ – the 24th 007 film. On this occasion, it will be a model developed specifically for the
film and built in-house by the brand’s design and engineering teams. Led by Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, the design team worked closely with the film’s director, Sam Mendes, to create the ultimate car for the world’s most famous spy. Celebrating the great British brand’s half century with Bond, which started with the iconic DB5, the DB10 gives a glimpse to the future design direction for the next generation of Aston Martins. Dr Andy Palmer, CEO of Aston Martin, said: “In the same year that
we celebrate our 50-year relationship with 007, it seems doubly fitting that today we unveiled this wonderful new sports car created especially for James Bond. “To be partnering once again with EON Productions is great news for this company and for everyone
around the world that loves to see Bond at the wheel of an Aston Martin. “I’m incredibly proud of everyone in the team at Gaydon who have brought this special project from concept to reality.” Production will be strictly limited
to 10 of the bespoke sports cars, developed and built by the designers, engineers and highly skilled craftspeople at Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters. ‘Spectre’ is due for general release on 6th November 2015.

80MPH… SIDEWAYS! Coventry Motofest to feature Falken International Drift Team
The UK team of Matt Carter, Paul Cheshire and Kirstie Widdrington plus Irish Drift Champion James Deane are planning to get all four Falkenshod cars simultaneously driving around the Coventry ring road in a spectacular display of car control at speeds of over 80mph - sideways. The four car team includes former British Drift Champion Matt Carter who will be driving his 650bhp Nissan R32 and jumped at the opportunity to take part. "We've all watched the Fast and Furious films or played the street driving games and wanted to drive our purpose built race cars in the city but that was never going to happen these days," says Carter. "What with all the safety and legal issues it was pretty much impossible but the team at MotoFest have done something amazing to pull this off. When we heard about it we just had to be part of it!" Drifting is the automotive equivalent of ice-skating with points awarded for style and speed rather
than outright lap time. Front running teams such as Falken compete in championships across Europe in one of the fastest growing forms of motorsports.

“We've all watched the Fast and Furious films or played the street driving games and wanted to drive our purpose built race cars in the city.” With no chance to practice beforehand the team will have to draw on all of its years of experience to get to grips with the much tighter confines of the slippery ring road, hemmed in by concrete walls and barriers. "We usually perform drifting at racetracks," adds team member Paul Cheshire. "The bumps, grids and throw in a greasy layer of diesel, not to mention the unforgiving nature of the concrete
the action to the fans is what Motofest is all about," says Falken's Matt Smith. "This is the only place to see a safe and spectacular drift on a UK road, it will look incredible." The technology and development of Falken High Performance Tyres and their driving characteristics have for many years been derived from motorsport, most recently its participation in the American Le Mans Series and Nürburgring 24 Hours.

TALISMAN: Brazilian forward, Elano, finished the tournament as the top scorer, netting eight goals in 11 matches
CHAMPIONS: Atletico de Kolkata are the winners of the first ISL tournament after picking up a late 1-0 victory over Kerala Blasters
ISL CHAMPIONS Sixty-one matches, 129 goals and one eventual winner – the Indian Super League has certainly lived up, to, and excelled, its expectations this year with a final to remember for fans around the world. The match-up between Atletico de Kolkata and Kerala Blasters finally arrived on Saturday 20th December, with a tight affair settled by the single goal. Despite being on top for the majority of the game, it was Kolkata who struck deep into stoppage time as substitute Mohamed Rafique headed home a corner to crown his side the 2014 champions. Speaking after the game to Sky Sports, former Liverpool forward and now Kolkata striker, Luis Garcia, said he was delighted to have clinched the championship. “I’m so happy and excited to have won the Indian Super League,” Garcia said. “We’ve worked so hard as a team over the last three months.
Last-minute winner clinches inaugural title for Kolkata It’s been a hard competition with so many games and we will enjoy this win so much because the ISL has been a great tournament. “We struggled in the middle part of the competition. The team couldn’t find a way to win and we were drawing many games but we believed in ourselves from the very beginning. “Our main target was to win this trophy and now we have.” Blasters, who overcame league champions Chennaiyin FC ion the semi-finals, did come close to opening the scoring on a number of occasions.
The closest of which came towards the end of the first period, when Player-of-the-Tournament, Iain Hume, fired in a curling effort from a free kick yet he was denied magnificently by shot-stopper, Apoula Edel Bete. Ex-England goalkeeper David James, was a losing finalist as playermanager of Kerala and despite his disappointment with the defeat, he added that he could reflect on a ‘wonderful tournament’. “It’s been wonderful to be in the final to start but when you play in a competition there are winners and losers,” the former Liverpool,
Manchester City and West Ham stopper said. “We wanted to be the competition’s first winners and we had chances to win the game. But in the past we’ve played better and lost and played worse and won.” Neither finalist had come into the play-offs as favourites for the title, yet after surprise victories in the semi-finals, the match-up was decided. Meanwhile, individual awards were also presented to ISL’s standout stars with Chennaiyin’s Elano walking away with top goalscorer, and the golden glove
STAR: Kerala Blaster’s Iain Hume may not have been awarded a winners medal but did pick up the Player of the Tournament accolade
award handed to FC Goa’s Jan Seda. Looking back on the season, it is hard to argue that the inaugural tournament wasn’t a success with more than 1.6million spectators turning up to watch the action live, making it the fourth best-attended league in the world.

New deal for Barca Star
THE BOY BECOMES A MAN – BOXER AMIR “KING” KHAN By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
Last weekend I witnessed a boxing match that above all was an absolute boxing masterclass by the man known as Amir “King” Khan (30-3, 19 KO) who displayed boxing speed, co-ordination and footwork, accuracy and impeccable skill to winning a unanimous decision (119-109, 118110, 120-108) against a notable and tough opponent, Devon Alexander (26-3, 29KO) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Khan demonstrated a notable change prior to this boxing match as he spoke with much more confidence without the brashness I have seen in the past. Khan was determined to prove that he belongs among the elite boxers in the division and was willing to prove this in the boxing ring rather than using words of persuasion. Khan finally looked more relaxed and composed at the 147 pound welterweight division that he claims is his natural weight. In the fight against Alexander, Khan dominated the fight proving hard to hit clean, smarter in his attack and less willing to take the type of wild risks that got him in trouble in past. Khan has previously acknowledged this change within himself as a boxer and has given credit to his new trainer as being the biggest part of his improved boxing performance. Khan said
Khalil Alam
““He [Hunter] has made me a better fighter. He’s made me an understanding fighter, to understand what boxing is all about and not make mistakes. I’m not going back to my old self again. It’s going to be in the blood where I look to fight, everyone knows that, I can come forward and fight you, I can box you, I have all the abilities, but there’s times and places for those.” The win against Alexander has placed Khan in the boxing spot light and reaffirmed his claim to the greatest prize in all of boxing – a potential bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Khan said after the Alexander win "I really believe I've earned my shot against the best boxer in the world, and that's Floyd Mayweather. We will come back here and take the belt. I want my chance; Floyd Mayweather is the ideal fight for me. I think he is the best pound-for-pound boxer, and it would be a game of chess, but against Mayweather I would be too skilful. I have the skill and movement to beat him." Khan as a fighter has matured and become a man in a brutal sport where only the best can survive and whereas at one time I would have given Khan little chance of winning against the more elite boxing opponents in the division, I now strongly believe that Khan has the potential to win against anyone and that includes the divisions best Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. The biggest question now is what next for Khan and should a lucrative fight with Mayweather or Pacquiao not happen next year then there is still other worthy and talented champions in the welterweight division that a win against will still secure Khan’s boxing legacy. We wish Khan the best of luck for the year 2015 and look forward to his next boxing matchup.
Barcelona’s rising star, Munir El Haddadi, looks set to be staying with the Catalan giants for the foreseeable future after signing a contract extension. The 19-year-old is just one of the latest stars to arrive on the scene from Barcelona’s unparalleled youth academy. Having made his league debut earlier this season in August against Elche, and scoring in that same game, El Haddadi has gone on to appear 12 more times for Barcelona’s senior side. The new deal does not extend El Haddadi's contract beyond its current expiry date at the end of June 2017, but it does increase wages and buyout clauses, with the latter rising to almost £28million. A statement from Barcelona read: “Munir El Haddadi has signed an updated contract in which his release clause, in accordance with the new agreement, rises to
35 million euros. “The signing took place at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper and also present were the sporting vice-president Jordi Mestre and director of football Andoni Zubizarreta.” El Haddadi joined Barcelona's youth academy from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and broke into the senior squad this summer after impressing coach Luis Enrique in pre-season. He has started in six league games for Barcelona, scoring one goal and setting up another.
SIGNED: Munir El Haddadi pledged his future to the Camp Nou club after signing an improved contract running until June 2017
Ten up for BARA Decade of success for community cohesion project
Palestine footballers: ‘We will play’ After Palestinian footballers were blocked from leaving the country to take part in an international tournament by Israeli forces last month, the head of Asian football says he remains committed to tackling such ‘illegal practices’. AFC President, Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, met with Sepp Blatter last month, with both parties voicing their displeasure after Israeli army forces stormed the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) headquarters in Jerusalem. PFA head, Jibril Al Rajoub, called on FIFA to sanction Israel at the meeting and show them ‘the red card’ after the incident. The trio met in Morocco along, with Union of Arab National Olympic Committees President Prince Talal bin Bader Al Saud, with Shaikh Salman confident measures would come against former Asian Football Confederation members, Israel, by
May. “Mr. Blatter showed a significant understanding of the suffering of football in Palestine due to the illegal Israeli practices which are against all international charters and conventions,” the Bahraini said in a statement after the meeting. “This subject will be raised at the next meeting of the FIFA Executive Committee and we are confident that the next stage will see steps taken to support football in Palestine, and give guarantees to stop the Israeli violations. “Palestine is an important member of the Asian Football Confederation and we will not spare any effort in supporting the PFA, and will work together to stop the Israeli plans to hinder the development of Palestinian football, which has achieved tremendous success of late despite all the difficulties and obstacles.”
The British Asian Rugby Association (BARA) recently celebrated its tenth anniversary with a special reception at the House of Commons. Established in 2004 by dual code international Ikram Butt, BARA has been a force for good in terms of promoting community cohesion across the UK through both codes of the oval ball game. The House of Commons event, made possible through the sponsorship of Greg Mulholland MP, featured a host of keynote speakers including former professional footballer and now Football Association anti-racism champion Paul Elliott CBE and Mark Pawsey MP, Chair of the Commons and Lords Rugby Club. In addition Seema Malhotra MP, Shadow Minister for Preventing Violence against women and girls, was present to talk about the White Ribbon Campaign that was recently adopted as a cause by BARA. National Sport England board member, Hanif Malik of the Leeds-based Hamara centre, and Qari Asim MBE - Imam at Leeds Makkah Mosque, also delivered speeches. Paul Elliott said: “It's important that young people have the opportunity to thrive by getting involved in sport. BARA is an organisation that makes sport fun and free of prejudice and that can only contribute towards bringing everyone together.” Qari Asim MBE also noted the contribution of which the group has made to wider society since its establishment a decade ago. He added: “BARA is an association that works in communities and with communities and has played an

King Khan topples ‘the Great’ ‘Give me Mayweather or Pacquiao’
DOMINANT: Khan never looked like losing against Alexander, winning nearly every round in a convincing display
Back page story continued hitting my peak. I can't wait to show the world what I have.” Khan was in complete control against ‘Alexander the Great’, with the three judges scoring the contest at 119-109, 118-110 and 120-108 in the Brit’s favour at the MGM Grand. Wearing his specially designed, 24-Carat gold encrusted shorts, the Bolton boxer won almost every round, with whatever gameplan Alexander had pre-fight, never threatening Khan. When he did finally get a powerful hit on Khan in the eighth, his opponent quickly responded with an explosive counter-punch of his own to reassure fans, and the judges,
of his dominance. With the fight all but over by the tenth, Alexander made a final flurry of punches yet could not break through Khan’s defence, seemingly accepting his fate before the end of the 12th. What happens next is still unknown. Will Pacquiao attempt to take the crown off King Khan’s head, or will the public finally see the fight they have waited so long for, as Khan goes toe-to-toe with Mayweather?
MILESTONE: The British Asian Rugby Association marked its tenth year anniversary at the House of Commons with a special event to commemorate the achievements of the group
instrumental role in bringing people together particularly after events such as the 7/7 bombing in London.” Ikram Butt, who was the first player of Asian heritage to represent England at either code of rugby starred for Leeds, Featherstone Rovers and London Broncos during his playing career. He went on to play for Pakistan's rugby union team and is widely recognised as one of the most influential British Asian role models after picking up a number of awards
for his work with BARA. Commenting on reaching their latest milestone, he said: “We've come a very long way in the past decade with many effective initiatives and projects delivered within communities across the nation that seek to build bridges and cement community relations through sport. “Both codes of rugby represent excellent vehicles for promoting social progress and I would like to put on record my hearth felt thanks to each and every individual and
organisation that has supported our efforts since 2004 especially Greg Mulholland MP whose support made this event possible. “Now, more than ever, we need to promote positive messages about anti-racism, discrimination and domestic violence and BARA will continue to keep banging the drum for progressive initiatives such as these. I look forward to BARA celebrating 20 years of success in 2024.”

King Khan topples ‘the Great’
TRIUMPH: Amir Khan may not have won any new belts from his latest victory over Devon Alexander yet the chance of a shot against Floyd Mayweather could be better than any piece of gold
‘Give me Mayweather or Pacquiao’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
It was being tipped as a close encounter that could go all the way yet Amir Khan’s 12-round dominant victory over Devon Alexander last weekend in Vegas was anything but ‘close’. The 28-year-old was on the front foot from the first round, overpowering the American to once again put his name in line for a shot against the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet, Floyd Mayweather.
