PRIME MINISTER AT ASIAN EXPRESS HQ David Cameron pays a visit to Britain’s largest free Asian newspaper and joins ABDN conference with Yorkshire’s business leaders Prime Minister David Cameron traded 10 Downing Street for 4 Armley Court earlier this week as he paid a visit to the UK’s largest free pick-up Asian publication. The Prime Minister graced the offices of Asian Express Newspaper on Thursday 5th February, as part of his visit to Yorkshire where he further pledged his commitment to end the ‘decades old divide between the North and South’. Mr Cameron seemed very relaxed as he met with the dedicated team of Asian Express, who welcomed his arrival at the Leeds-based offices. A few jokes were cracked about how tall the PM actually was,

Being led on a tour of the Asian Express Newspaper office’s by cofounders, Managing Director Nadim Hanif, and Editor-in-Chief, Andleeb Hanif, Mr Cameron viewed some of the recent front page headlines and commended the newspaper for its work on not just a local but national level. The Prime Minister had also facilitated a conference with the Asian Business Development Network (ABDN) in Leeds, which has recently been acquired by Nadim Hanif. A number of Yorkshire’s most influential Asian business leaders attended the
meeting, chaired by Mr Gurdev Dahele. Mr Cameron spoke to them about the launch of the Yorkshire phase of the government’s economic ‘Northern Powerhouse’ scheme, and reiterated the importance of Asian businesses and the role they play in Britain’s recovering economy. Matters of concern to small and medium sized ethnic businesses were discussed, as well as the absence, or very little representation, of Asians in LEPs, and subsequent opportunities for professionals to hold higher executive roles on a local government level. www.asianexpress.co.uk Teen planned London beheadings
A British teenager who rapidly became radicalized after converting to Islam was convicted last week of planning to behead a soldier. A jury at London's Central Criminal Court found 19-year-old Brusthom Ziamani guilty of preparing an act of terrorism. The London-born teenager was raised by Jehovah's Witness parents but converted to Islam early in 2014 and became influenced by the radical group al-Muhajiroun. Prosecutors said Ziamani was inspired by the two Islamic extremists who murdered soldier Lee Rigby in a London street in 2013. They said he researched the location of army cadet bases in London and told his girlfriend he planned to ‘kill soldiers’ before he was arrested in August with a 12-inch (30-centimeter) knife and a hammer in his backpack.
Greater punishment for anti-Semitic crimes
Urgent action is needed to tackle a ‘disturbing’ rise in anti-Semitism in Britain including measures to deal with growing ‘cyber hate’ on social media, a group of senior lawmakers said last month. Last week, the body which advises Britain's estimated 260,000 Jews on security reported that the number of antiSemitic incidents in Britain had risen to a record level last year. Many of those incidents were sparked by the 50-day conflict in Gaza that ended in August. Israel launched its Gaza offensive with the declared aim of halting rocket attacks by Hamas. More than 2,100 Palestinians, most of them civilians, were killed, along with 73 mostly Israeli soldiers. The rise in incidents prompted a parliamentary inquiry into anti-Semitism.
Beginning of end of United Kingdom?
Britain set out plans on Friday to give Wales greater powers, including to issue bonds and control fracking licences, in a further step to dismantle its centralised system of government. With just over two months until a national election, the issue of devolution to the United Kingdom's constituent parts has risen to the fore after a last-ditch promise to hand more powers to Scotland helped swing a close referendum in September. That resulted in a deal for the biggest transfer of powers to Scotland from London since 1999, when a Scottish parliament was set up, and spurred demands for similar powers from England, Wales and Northern Ireland which critics fear could trigger the beginning of the end of the United Kingdom. “We are delivering on devolution in every part of the UK,” Prime Minister David Cameron said on Friday. “We want to deliver new powers to Wales so that more decisions are taken closer to the people and give greater responsibility to the Welsh Assembly. “That means those who spend taxpayers' money must be more responsible for raising it.”

Gaza doctors return A group of UK-funded NHS surgeons have returned from treating war-wounded patients in Gaza six months after the temporary ceasefire was agreed. The volunteer doctors visited the region regularly for the past six months to carry out surgery on patients with severe injuries and train doctors in Gaza hospitals to improve their surgical capacities. The team were deployed by Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), working with NGO Ideals, with £724,000 in funding from the Department for International Development (DFID). The funding is part of DFID’s £37 million package of assistance in response to the 2014 Gaza crisis. Justine Greening, International Development Secretary, said: “Six months on from the temporary ceasefire the situation in Gaza remains dire. Around 108,000 people were left homeless by the conflict and over 11,000 Palestinians were injured. “The vital work of these British surgeons is an important part of the UK effort to help the people of Gaza rebuild their lives. However none of the underlying causes of the conflict have yet been addressed. The UK is playing its part to help those caught up in the conflict, but it is clear the need for a political solution for Gaza is more urgent than ever.” Amongst the patients who were treated by the British doctors, was nine-year-old Weam. She was playing in the garden of her home with her father last summer when a rocket landed on them and exploded. She suffered major

MP argues that there was antisemitism and Islamophobia ‘lurking’ behind some arguments against religious slaughter without stunning the animal
The latest parliamentary discussion on the future of the stunning of all animals, before religious slaughter, led to a heated three-hour debate in Westminster Hall last week. Calls to legislate the practice have seen MPs put forward robust defences of kosher and halal religious slaughtering methods, sparking a debate in which more than a dozen speakers from across the political spectrum gave their views. The debate on Monday 23rd February was called after a British Veterinary Association-backed petition calling for a ban on non-stun slaughter generated 100,000 signatures in nine months.

Halal and Kosher explained Muslims require food to be 'halal' and Jews 'shechita'. Both involve methods of slaughter that mean the animal has to be conscious before it is killed, that is not stunned first, which is the usual method in British slaughterhouses. These are two religions which place great value on observing dietary laws and is part of what identifies a Muslim as a Muslim or a Jew as a Jew, not just to outsiders but to themselves. Muslims believe the rules of slaughtering animals derive from the Qu'ran; Jews from book of Deuteronomy. The name for the halal method of slaughter is 'dhabiha' and one of the certifying bodies for halal food - the Halal Food Authority, does allow electrical stunning for sheep and poultry as long as the animal doesn't die. Animals are killed with a swift incision to the throat from a razor sharp blade. The animal must never see another animal being slaughtered nor must it ever see the blade being sharpened. They must be checked before slaughter to ensure they are healthy and given clean water to drink. Then they are turned to face Mecca, the prayer is recited, the jugular vein and carotid arteries are cut – leaving the spinal cord intact – and the blood drained from the carcass. Shechita requires the animal has to be conscious and is carried out by a shoket – which involves a super-sharp blade called a chalaf being used to sever the throat. The blood is then drained. Campaigners against religious slaughter argue that stunning the animal first is kinder. Different methods are used: gas stunning, which slowly renders the creature unconscious (birds and pigs are actually killed like this too); percussive stunning, used for cattle and sheep, in which a captive bolt is used to render it unconscious before it's hoisted into the air by one leg and stuck by the slaughterman; and electrical stunning, which involves passing a current through the brain. For sheep, this means shocking them with tongs on their heads; for birds, it involves hanging them by the feet and dipping them in an electrified water bath before the belt moves them on to a mechanical neckcutter.

Data reveals Muslim population has risen by one-million
The Muslim population of England and Wales increased by more than a million in the space of a decade, a newly published report has revealed, whilst the number of Muslim children attending school has doubled since 2001. An analysis of 2011 Census data for the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) suggests the Muslim population had increased 75 per cent from 1.5 million in 2001 to 2.7 million, with a third below the age of 15. The research shows one in 12 school-age children was Muslim and there had been a significant improvement in Muslim education, with just a quarter not having any qualifications compared with two-infive 10 years previously. But just one in five was in full-time

employment, compared with one in three of the wider population, with the researchers saying Muslims face a ‘double penalty... in entering the labour market - of racial discrimination as well as Islamophobia’. While more than half were born outside the country, 73 per cent said their national identity was British, the British Muslims in Numbers report said. Three-quarters of the Muslim population was concentrated in
London, the West Midlands, the North West and Yorkshire and Humber and 46 per cent lived in the top 10 per cent most deprived areas. It’s also suggested that 71 per cent of Muslim women between the ages of 16 and 24 were not in employment, compared to approximately half the general population. For women aged 25 to 49, it says that 57 per cent of Muslim women were in employment, compared with 80 per cent of women overall.
Talha Ahmad, a senior member of the MCB, told the BBC the significant rise in the population could be put down in part to refugees from countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq and conversions. The report, led by Sundas Ali of the University of Oxford, said: “There is need for various stakeholders Muslim civil society, policy institutes, employers, trade unions and the Department for Work and Pensions to facilitate conditions and
opportunities in the labour market. "Muslim civil society needs to have a better appreciation of the social realities." Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: “Taking data from the 2011 census, this important new report from the Muslim Council of Britain helps give us a snapshot of the socioeconomic challenges and opportunities now facing Britain's Muslim communities. “What's not in doubt is that British Muslims can be proud of the contribution they make to our country. Drawing on analysis like this, together, we can help create jobs, drive growth and enable more people to get on building the stronger economy and fairer society we want for Britain's future.”

Army chief ‘looking into’ possibility of return
A minister in the House of Commons says Britain’s army chief should look into reintroducing a Sikh regiment in the forces. Mark Francois, Minister of State for the Armed Forces, said the Chief of the General Staff is currently examining the possibility of a Sikh unit, which would inherit the ‘proud traditions’ of previous regiments. An attempt to resurrect the unit in 2007 was abandoned by the Ministry of Defence in a fear that the move would be branded as racist. However, Mr Francois, when asked about the possibility of a return in the near future, insisted that such a regiment could be a possibility. Speaking at the defence questions in the Commons, Conservative former defence
minister Sir Nicholas Soames told Mr Francois: “You will be aware of the extraordinary gallant and distinguished service by Sikhs to this country down the generations.

Researchers to build
‘Smart Trousers’ Robotic clothing to be developed in Leeds A prosthetic hand controlled by the nervous system, robotic clothing to help people with walking, and biosensors to monitor how patients use equipment or exercise during rehabilitation are the focus of three research projects awarded £5.3 million by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The three innovative research projects start work in the spring and are led by Newcastle University, the University of Bristol and the University of Warwick working with 15 other partners including the University of Leeds. UK scientists and clinicians devised the research after being challenged to transform the design and development of assistive and rehabilitative devices using EPSRC’s creative workshop approach, known as a ‘sandpit’. Philip Nelson, Chief Executive of EPSRC explained: “These research studies will improve patients’ lives, allow greater independence and benefit patients with a wide range of mobility and co-ordination difficulties. “With the UK’s ageing population and a rise in disabilities, this highlights one area of EPSRC investment in healthcare research which has a national impact.” In Leeds, a team of researchers will be working with a number of universities to develop soft robotic clothing to improve mobility. The initial objective, expected to be delivered in eighteen months, is to develop a ‘smart sock’, which would aid people recovering from ankle injuries who may struggle to pull their foot upwards when taking a stride.
INNOVATIVE: Dr Kianoush Nazarpour, lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at Newcastle University, is leading the project for a prosthetic hand
The fabric in the ‘smart sock’ will be designed to provide the force needed to get a foot into the right position. By the end of the project, in three years, the team plans to develop a pair of ‘smart trousers’ that give added bionic strength to help wearers climb stairs and stand up. The trousers could also help avoid falls by detecting and providing extra support when the user is losing balance. Dr Abbas Dehghani, Senior Lecturer in the University of Leeds’ School of Mechanical Engineering, will develop the intelligent control system to direct when and how the fabric moves. “The system has to be able to work out what the user is trying to do; it is no good the trousers trying to help you walk, if you actually want to sit down,” Dr Dehghani said. “My job is to develop that top-level intelligent control and the systems that work out and coordinate the movement of the clothing to support that activity.”
“T hese research studies will improve patients’ lives, allow greater independence and benefit patients with a wide range of mobility and co-ordination difficulties.”

The Singing Stones
s A compilation of three fearless play explores some explosive and truly dangerous real life stories of women
February 2015 - 1st Edition
AsianExpress.co.uk
NEWS
A triad of three fearless plays, exploring women and the Arab revolutions, begs to ask the question “was the Arab Spring the greatest missed opportunity for humanity of the 21st century?” The ‘Singing Stones’ is a production by Mama Quilla - an award-winning, woman-led performing arts company spotlighting human rights issues, which offers a female perspective on the big topics of the day. One short piece in this project, ‘The Women’s Spring’, focussing on the female protestors in Tahrir Square, threw up some extraordinary stories, including women being dragged off and subjected to “virginity” tests, then “disappearing”. In Libya, the female members of the family of a soldier who refused to fire at civilian protestors were lured to a house that was then set ablaze. In Syria, women were taken from their homes at night and forced to witness the torture of their brothers, fathers or husbands, before being taken home to testify and spread terror. With the more recent kidnap, rape and enslavement of thousands of ordinary women, the stories continue. And of course, the very diverse women street protestors, so lively and present at the beginning, were ignored, very briefly celebrated, and then denied and ultimately derided. The three plays titled ‘Stones’, ‘The Women’s Spring’ and ‘The Singing Stones’ , is very much influenced by what has been learnt from blogs and social media of real women. The explosive and truly dangerous sensitivity of the facts became apparent as blogs were taken down and testimonies – and indeed people – disappeared. Mama Quilla, founded in 1999 by Kay Adshead and Lucinda Gane, has a mission to explore the big issues of the day from the female viewpoint. The company’s first three major productions, ‘The Bogus Woman’, ‘Bites’, and ‘Bones’ were all performed at the Bush Theatre and published by Oberon Books. All were subsequently produced internationally.

Act ‘FAST’ South Asians urged to take immediate action when facing stroke symptoms • Annual ‘Act FAST’ campaign launches to highlight the symptoms of stroke • 10,000 strokes could be prevented annually if mini strokes were spotted and treated • The risk of stroke amongst South Asians is around double the general UK’s population • Just over a third would recognise the warning signs which could mean a major stroke is imminent Public Health England has launched the annual ‘Act FAST’ campaign, which highlights the common symptoms of stroke and mini strokes and encourages people to call 999 if they notice the symptoms in others or experience them themselves. The campaign specifically targets South Asians as it is crucially important that these groups know the symptoms of stroke and mini strokes as their risk is around double the general population in the UK. A mini stroke has similar symptoms to a full stroke, except that these symptoms last for a much shorter amount of time. Without immediate treatment, around one in five of those who experience a mini stroke will go on to have a full stroke within a few days.
Early intervention following a mini stroke can greatly reduce the risk of having another stroke. However, while 59 per cent of people surveyed cite stroke as one of the top three conditions they are concerned about behind cancer, new research reveals today that less than half (45 per cent) would call 999 if they experienced the symptoms of a mini stroke. Sanjeev Bhasker, comedian, actor and campaign supporter said: “Family is a really important part of my life, and when a family member has a stroke, it can be devastating for the patient and the rest of the family. “As a community we have a higher risk of stroke than the general population so knowing the signs to look out for is crucial for us. “If you or a family member

This not only results in a greater chance of better recovery, but since the campaign launch over 4,000 fewer people have become disabled as a result of a stroke. Professor Kevin Fenton, Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England said: “It’s very important that we continue to raise awareness of the symptoms of stroke especially amongst high risk

Gandhi in London
Iconic statue to be unveiled next month
MONUMENT: The statue of Mahatma Gandhi will mark the 100th anniversary of his return to India from South Africa
British Prime Minister David Cameron has said the highly anticipated unveiling of London’s latest Mahatma Gandhi statue will take place on Saturday 14th March, in the historic Parliament Square. The bronze sculpture will stand alongside current iconic figures, Nelson Mandela and Winston Churchill, as it is unveiled by Indian finance minister, Arun Jaitley. It will be the focal point for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Gandhi's return to India from South Africa to kickstart India's independence movement.
The announcement of its unveiling date came after the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust surpassed the £1million mark in donations, with steel tycoon, Lakshmi N Mittal, adding £100,000 and the Infosys Board, chaired by K V Kamath, donating a further £250,000 in the last few weeks. “The statue in Parliament Square not only marks his (Gandhi’s) huge importance in the history of both our countries, but will enrich the firm bond of friendship between the world’s oldest democracy and its largest,” Cameron said in a statement. “Mahatma Gandhi is an
inspiration. His approach of nonviolence will resonate forever as a positive legacy not just for the UK and India, but the world over. “He was a man of great insight and many of his observations remain as fresh and relevant today as when he first made them - that ‘we should be the change we wish to see in the world’ is timeless advice, well worth following.” The sculpture will portray the Father of the Indian Nation draped in a shawl based on pictures from his last visit to the UK in 1931. Created by leading British sculptor Philip Jackson, he has been sculpting the statue since
Chancellor George Osborne and Leader of the House of Commons, William Hague, announced the plans for the memorial in July 2014. Lord Meghnad Desai, the founder-chair of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, said it was ‘great’ to see a monument ‘honouring Gandhi in one of his favourite cities’. “He is the first Indian and the only person honoured with a statue in the Square who never held public office,” Lord Desai said. “Generous donors have contributed sums from a pound up to hundreds of thousands of pounds from the UK, India and around the world. “On behalf of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust we thank all who made it possible for us to exceed our target of a million pounds within six months. As Gandhi said 'If the cause is right the means will come'.”

NEWS Researchers in the UK are set to tackle some of the largest global health problems thanks to a landmark collaboration between the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Government of India Department of Biotechnology (DBT). Nearly £7 million will be invested by the UK, through the MRC and the Newton Fund, and India through the DBT, to develop three major global research centres using high quality research teams– including scientists from the University of Sheffield and University of Bradford. One of the ground-breaking centres, the UK-Indian Centre for Advanced Technology for Minimising the Indiscriminate use of Antibiotics (UKICAT-MA), will focus on research into antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and will be led by the University of Sheffield and University of Bradford to establish smart materials for the detection and target delivery of antibiotics for eye infections. Professor Stephen Rimmer from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Chemistry, who is part of the expert team, said: “Resistance to antibiotics is becoming one of the most important challenges of our age. “A number of challenges exist if we are to avoid descent into a postantibiotic age, including the development of: new antibiotics; new diagnostics and improved delivery systems. “UKICAT-MA will establish materials for both detection, at the point-of-care, of ocular infections and the targeted delivery of antibiotics to infected sites in the eye.

“The enormous benefit of detecting something which works in both a UK and Indian environment is that it will help everyone across the world.” The Centre involves a

are then either monitored to provide a signal of the presence of the bacteria or they provide a basis for targeting antibiotics to bacteria whilst reducing effects on surrounding tissues. UKICAT-MA will develop these smart materials to produce contact lenses that give colour indications of bacterial infections and systems for local delivery of therapeutics to infected ocular tissues. Dr Mark Palmer MRC Director of International Strategy, said: “With a 100-year history of strategic international collaboration, MRC scientists today collaborate with researchers in more than 100 countries. We know diseases don’t recognise international borders and that addressing health problems around the world demands a global response. “These exciting partnerships between excellent scientists in India and the UK is a key part of our international effort to pool expertise and resources and deliver research that will make a real difference to global health.” Prof K VijayRaghavan, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, said: “The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, is delighted to partner with the MRC in creating research centres which will address vexing challenges in medicine through quality science and collaboration. India is committed to working with the best in the world, for India and for the world. “We are acutely aware that the fruits of our partnership can mean better lives for the most needy everywhere and are committed to make the collaboration succeed.”

EXCLUSIVE: Editor Andleeb Hanif speaks with Prime Minister David Cameron at Asian Express offices in Leeds
“We need to unite to make a clear and loud definition between Islam - a religion of peace and Islamist extremism,” says Prime Minister The now much-criticised letter that communities secretary Eric Pickles sent to mosques, telling Muslims they to face the “challenges of integration and radicalisation”, has been supported by the Prime Minister. In a one-to-one interview at the Asian Express offices in Leeds, David Cameron said Eric Pickles' letter, which told more than 1,000 Islamic leaders they "had more work to do" to root our extremists, was "reasonable, sensible and moderate". Eric Pickles letter, which was sent out in the wake of the terror attacks in France, was slammed by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) and many other Muslim leaders, who said the letter appeared to re-enforce claims by the far right about Islam not being a part of British society. Mr. Cameron said that anyone reading the letter could see that it clearly praises the Muslim community saying that they make a great contribution to UK, and that what is happening in terms of extremist terror has nothing to do with the true religion of Islam. The letter had also praised the way Muslims in Britain had responded to the Paris terror attacks and Mr Cameron said that he believes that in no way did the letter intend to undermine Muslims in Great Britain and that it was being taken out of context. When asked if he understands how Muslim’s in Britain may be feeling exposed and vulnerable to stigmatisation by the letter, Mr Cameron says: “We cannot turn away from Islamist extremism, all of us have to look at this and ask how do we combat this poisonous narrative. Obviously we needed the Muslim community in Great Britain to join us on this.” The Prime Minister said that the Iraq war or 911 attack was just a wake up call to the realisation of radicalisation of vulnerable young Muslim men and that “we cannot turn away from this - all of us have to look at this and is ask how do we combat this poisonous narrative,” he says. He criticised the Governemnt’s old Prevent programme stating that it was a “bit muddled” and that it didn’t do very well on either objectives of trying to support mosques and prevent terrorism. It confused the delivery of Government policy to promote integration to prevent terrorism. “Obviously we need the Muslim community in Great Britain to work with us. “We need to unite to make a clear and loud definition
between Islam - a religion of peace and Islamist extremism, and we need the help of the Muslim leaders on facilitating this,” says the Prime Minister. He added that he feels rooting out terrorism is a generational challenge and feels that it’s something that will take a while to overcome. “We must unite as a nation to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure that they are given appropriate advice and support. “At the same time, we have to stand up and fight against Islamophobia. “It’s a real problem in our country and it makes people feel vulnerable and fearful and it is extremely unpleasant and unnecessary,” he says. Faith leaders, he says, are in a unique position in British society as they have a precious opportunity and important responsibility in explaining and demonstrating how faith in Islam can be part of British identity.

17 offers for grammar school’s intellectual elite The chance to study at one of England’s most prestigious universities is not a common occurrence yet for 17 academics at a single Leeds sixth form, a life at Oxbridge could be just around the corner. Students from the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) are continuing the impressive success rate of their predecessors in securing offers from Oxford and Cambridge universities. Fourteen current Year 13 students now hold conditional offers from the two renowned establishments, whilst three alumni, who graduated last year, have also received offers. Amongst the nine students holding a conditional offer from Cambridge are two 18-year-olds, Ashwin Venkatesh and Amol Joshi, who both hope to study medicine. The intellectual pair both currently take the same lessons at GSAL and have similar aspirations for their future academic life. Ashwin, from Alwoodley, noted the moment he opened the letter confirming his conditional offer last month and how determined he was now to achieve the grades ‘expected’ of him. “My first and second interviews at Cambridge were held on 10th December and I felt they went as well as they could have but there is always a bit of uncertainty about whether you
have done enough,” he said. “When I received my letter it didn’t really sink in at first and it still hasn’t now. To have the chance to study at Cambridge is a major opportunity and I am very thankful for that. “I phoned my mum after reading the letter and she broke down crying on the phone. It is a big achievement but I think all of us are now even more determined to achieve the grades expected of us and attend Cambridge next year.” Amol, from Moortown, added that he was less confident following his interview but remained calm under pressure to impress the interviewees. “I was a bit nervous after the interview because I knew I had made some mistakes but the important thing was that I was able to guide myself to a valid conclusion,” he said. “My letter arrived on 10th January like Ashwin and he actually phoned me in the morning to say ‘I’m in, how have you done’, before I had even looked. “I sent him a message later that day saying ‘you’re stuck with me for another six years’ which felt really

good.” Last year, 17 students from GSAL received offers from Oxbridge colleges, with this year’s tally equalling the record for the school. Teacher Ray Peacock is GSAL’s Oxbridge coordinator. He said he was ‘delighted’ to once again see a number of GSAL students receive offers from Oxbridge. Explaining more about the application process, he said: “It’s a demanding application process that has become increasingly competitive in recent years.
“We offer a comprehensive programme of support in school, to help students demonstrate their passion for their chosen subjects on their UCAS personal statement, hone their independent thinking skills in preparation for the interview and prepare for specific admissions tests. “While the candidates engaged fully with our programme it is ultimately their own commitment and hard work that secured these sought after offers, and we are hugely proud of their success.”

Imams head to Paris Muslims told to ‘reclaim’ peaceful religion from minority fanatics who have ‘hijacked’ it A group of British imams headed to the French capital’s oldest synagogue earlier this month to meet with Jewish and Muslim leaders in an attempt to strengthen interfaith relations. In January, four people were killed at a Jewish grocery store by an armed gunman just two days after the shootings at Charlie Hebdo offices. Both

attacks were carried out by Islamic extremists. During the British group’s recent visit, they offered support to both communities and spoke with representatives about current concerns and anxieties they are experiencing. Imam Qari Asim, of Leeds’ Makkah Masjid, was one of the delegates who made the trip and
said British imams felt ‘compelled’ to visit the nation to show solidarity between Muslim and Jewish communities. “Our faith, Islam, preaches us that every life, regardless of faith and race, is sacred,” he said. “Grief and pain at the loss of a life, therefore, transcends the boundaries of race and religion. “The recent barbaric attacks on Jewish community have affected us all in the West. They have sent a wave of fear amongst the Jewish community and concern amongst Muslims.” He added: “Imams – British and French – were resolute not to let terrorists dictate the course of history and divide communities. “It was not the terrorists who shed blood in Paris, but the Muslim worker in the kosher supermarket, Lassana Bathily, who is a hero to Muslims. It will not be terrorists but Lassana who will continue to inspire generations.” As well as speaking with

members of the different communities, the imams were also taken to the actual kosher supermarket where the attacks took place in January, as well as a number of synagogues to meet with rabbis and imams from France. The Muslim population in the country is the second biggest religious grouping, and Mr Asim says the message he received from representatives of the demo-graphic was that the community was being ‘blamed’ for the acts of terrorists. “[We] shared the concern that Muslims have suffered at the hands of violent extremists more than any other community and the deep scars of terrorism have disfigured the ‘Muslim body’,” he said. “This calls for an intelligent strategy to defeat the toxic ideology at an intellectual and practical level. “[We] highlighted some of the best practice that is prevalent amongst British Muslims and our institutions. More importantly, what were the factors that made British Muslims proud of both our religious and national identity.” Mr Asim added that despite such beliefs, the group were ‘warmly welcomed’ by the Council of Jewish Insitution of France (CRIF) during a prearranged, constructive meeting. An open and ‘frank’ dialogue took place between the two groups regarding the challenges that lie ahead and the steps that need to be taken, jointly, to overcome them.

£35m cannabis empire comes crashing down
ILLEGAL: Evidence of the Saund’s activities were presented in front of Birmingham Crown Court including images of cannabis farms and giant wads of cash
Uncle and nephew jailed for huge drugs network
Two men who oversaw a cannabis farm network across the Midlands - netting them a multi-million pound fortune are now behind bars after West Midlands Police brought their drugs empire to an immediate halt. Nirmal and Darryl Saund posed as respected businessmen - operating out of a Birmingham company called The Cayman Group - to strike rental deals on industrial units and residential addresses in Northamptonshire, Herefordshire, Leicester and Shropshire. But having secured leases, the pair kitted out the premises with sophisticated hydroponics equipment and employed members of the Vietnamese community to act as live-in growers. Between September 2012 and June last year, when they were arrested by West Midlands Police, it’s estimated they had netted around £35million in drugs profits. West Midlands Police coordinated a major investigation into the family following cannabis factory
finds by police forces across the Midlands. Detectives ran surveillance operations on some sites, uncovered aliases used by the drugs barons created using fake passports and utility bills, and uncovered bank accounts used to stash drugs cash having followed Vietnamese ‘staff’ on bank runs. And crucially, through sophisticated high-tech checks, they were able to trace the group to their headquarters in Baltimore Road, Handsworth Wood. Nirmal Saund, 51, from Skip Lane in Walsall, admitted conspiracy to supply drugs whilst 31-year-old Darryl, from Foxcote Drive in Shirley, denied being involved but was found guilty after a trial. At Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday 18th February, both men were jailed - for 10 years and six months, and nine years respectively. In total, six members of the Vietnamese community were also arrested from cannabis farms run by the Saunds, some of whom went on to be jailed.

Missing girls
‘failed’ by UK security Authorities appeal for ‘safe return’ of teens travelling to Syria MISSING: The three girls were picked up on CCTV at the airport on Tuesday 17th February

February 2015 - 1st Edition
The search for three teenage girls, who are believed to have fled to Syria last week to join up with Islamic extremists, continues this week as the family of a previous ‘jihadi bride’ points the finger at UK security forces. 16-year-old, Kadiza Sultana, and 15-year-olds, Shamima Begum and Amira Abase, boarded a Turkish Airlines flight on Tuesday 17th February at Gatwick Airport, arriving in Istanbul at around 6.40pm local time. They left their homes in East London before 8am that morning, providing their families with plausible reasons as to why they would be out for the day. However, the girls, who all attended Bethnal Green Academy and were described as ‘straight A students’ actually met and travelled to the airport where CCTV images showed them boarding the plane. It has now been reported that one of the girls, Begum, had been in contact with 20-year-old Aqsa Mahmood, from Glasgow, who went to Syria in 2013 to support the extremists. The two spoke via Twitter, with the teen writing, ‘Follow me so I can dm (direct message) you back’ on 15th February. Ms Mahmood’s family released a statement last weekend to condemn the actions of their relative who they labelled a ‘disgrace’ for her supposed role in recruiting the girls for the Islamic State (IS). “You are a disgrace to your family and the people of Scotland, your actions are a perverted and evil distortion of Islam,” said the statement. “You are killing your family every

North Carolina murders Fathers of slain USA Muslim students maintains “It was a hate crime” #MuslimLivesMatter Protest against BBC silence over Chapel Hill Shooting
Anti-racists and Muslim communities protested outside the BBC Broadcasting House in Portland Place, London last week to condemn the BBC’s silence in regard to the horrific shooting of three Muslim people in the USA. In stark contrast to the Paris shootings, there was no immediate coverage, it was not headline news or even covered in the main news bulletins. On the other hand there was widespread coverage on social media, where #MuslimLivesMatter trended - a reference to the racist nature of the attack and the lack of coverage of it. Sabby Dhalu, Organiser of Stand up to Racism said: "Our condolences and thoughts are with the families and friends of Deah Shaddy Barakat, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha,and her sister, Razan Mohammad AbuSalha. “We support their calls for this to be considered a hate crime. Any loss of life should be treated equally. Muslim people are consistently portrayed as the perpetrators but not the victims of terrorism and hatred. “We are saddened by the lack of media
coverage in this case, which stands in stark contrast to the wall to wall top story coverage that the Paris shootings rightfully received. “Politicians and influential figures lined up to blame the entire Muslim community for those horrific actions and 'kill all muslims' trended worldwide on twitter without an international outcry. “We are concerned that attacks against the Muslim community are taking place in a heightened climate of Islamophobia and hatred. We will say loudly and clearly that Muslim lives matter, all attacks of this nature should be brought to justice and receive equal coverage. Weyman Bennett, Joint National Secretary Unite Against Fascism said: "The prevalence of racism and Islamophobia means that when Muslim and Black people are murdered, their plight is willfully ignored. “In a modern democracy, the first right is a right to life. “To deny Muslim people equal treatment is a reflection of antiMuslim racism in our society. We must stand in solidarity with the Muslim community. They are today's scapegoats. Tomorrow it will be others."
TRAGIC LOSS: 23-year-old Deah Shaddy Barakat, who was Syrian American, his 21-year-old Palestinian American wife, Yusor Mohammad, and her sister, 19-year-old Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, were killed execution-style by a self-described atheist with a history of harassment and racist intimidation
The fathers of the three promising Muslim students shot in their Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA apartment spoke before their funeral on Thursday 12th February, calling on Americans and the rest of the world to understand that they died in a hate crime. Slain on the Tuesday 10th February night shooting were dental student Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21 and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19. Police had said the attack was preceded by a long-standing dispute over parking with their neighbour Craig Hicks, 46, who has been formally charged on the murder of the three students. However, in the wake of the killing of three promising students there has been an outcry about how Western media has failed to cover this story. The news originally spread fast on social media such as Facebook and Twitter, mainly by Muslims, and has sparked a worldwide social media and human rights outcry of hashtag “Muslim Lives Matter.” Despite the assumption that Hicks attacked the students over a parking dispute, many from the
Muslim global community believe the attack is related to religious or ethnic discrimination. The father of the two women who lost their lives
has called it a hate crime. The women’s father, Dr. Mohammad Abu-Salha, who has a psychiatry practice in Clayton, USA, said regardless of

what prompted the shooting, Hicks’ underlying animosity toward Barakat and Abu-Salha was based on their religion and culture. The three students all grew up in Raleigh. The two women graduated from Athens Drive High School, and Barakat graduated from Broughton High School. They all attended N.C. State University as undergraduates, where they all earned honours. Barakat finished in 2013, and Yusor Abu-Salha graduated last fall. Razan Abu-Salha, a design student, made the dean’s list in her first semester in the fall. Yusor Abu-Salha was to enroll at UNC’s dental school next fall, joining her husband there. They planned to open a practice together, but both advocated for global dental health, providing care and supplies to people in the United States and the Middle East. On 29th January, Barakat posted a Facebook photo of a Durham project that gave dental supplies and food to more than 75 homeless people this year. Barakat was scheduled to travel with 10 other dentists this summer to Reyhanli, Turkey. There, they planned to treat Syrian refugee children for urgent dental needs, pass out toothbrushes and toothpaste, and support Turkish dentists and clinics.

Labour candidate steps down after 72 hours The contest to hold the parliamentary seat in Bradford West took a bizarre twist last week as Labour’s newly selected candidate announced her decision to step down, four days after being chosen. Amina Ali, a councillor currently in Tower Hamlets, London, made the announcement via Twitter on Wednesday 26th February tweeting: “I would like to stop the rumour mill, I have stepped down.” Despite quickly deleting the message, the would-be prospective Labour candidate released an official statement to confirm the news, stating the disruption to her family life would be too great. She added: “However, I am the mother of two children and despite my best efforts to make arrangements to bring them to Bradford for the next 70 days, particularly as one of them is doing her GCSEs, this would have caused massive disruption at a critical time. “I would not be able to do justice to the members of Bradford West CLP and the people of Bradford. “Bradford West needs a candidate who is going to live in Bradford and be involved in the campaign for every moment of every day and I am unable to fulfil this commitment despite a strong wish to support the

Mr Galloway initially took up the position after a landslide victory in a by-election in 2012 and says the withdrawal of Labour’s selection was due to a ‘war inside [the] Bradford West Labour Party’. He said: “New Labour in Bradford is in shambles. Well, no change there. This is playing like an out-take from ‘The thick of it’. Didn't she think it through before she put her name forward? “Of course she did and no-one's going to be taken in by that. Not even Malcolm Tucker could spin it successfully. The real reason is the war inside Bradford West Labour Party and she's retreated from it, badly wounded.”

On the eve of Sanjay’s and Anu’s big day, a ‘Sangeet’ ceremony was held. This included performances by XFactor judge and pop sensation Nicole Scherzinger, and Bollywood star Arjun Kapoor. They were supported by a full troupe of dancers and a vibrant lighting exhibition. On the wedding day itself, guests were treated to folk music as

Last year millions of people were glued to their television screens as Thornhill Academy’s Musharaf Asghar overcome his stammer on Channel 4’s hit documentary, Educating Yorkshire. His touching story helped earn the programme a number of awards over the past 12 months, with Musharaf, or ‘Mushy’ as he is well known, even having his own spin off programme ‘Stammer School’ following its success.
Now, the nation’s favourite student may have left the nation’s favourite academy yet with regular contact with former staff, and A-levels to study for, ‘Educating Mushy’ is still very much his life. Speaking to the Asian Express about his new life as a local celebrity, Mushy said it has been an ‘honour’ to be involved in the show and hopes his personal story will help other people with stammers gain more confidence.
Q) What have you been up to since the end of Educating Yorkshire? A) I have actually been busy with a lot of college work and trying to set up a YouTube channel which will hopefully happen this year. I've got a lot going on. Q) How has your life changed since the Educating Yorkshire series? A) It's been amazing. From all the interviews and award shows. I'm absolutely honoured that I've been given this chance. Q) The moment you spoke with music playing, what was that like? A) It was quite emotional. Knowing that I knew the people sitting in front of me for five years and I hadn't really been able to speak to them was quite hard. Finally speaking in front of them was just a once in a life time experience. To see it on TV was quite weird. You never really imagine looking at yourself on TV. It was nice knowing the fact that there was something on TV which I could really relate to. Q) Do you keep in touch with the teachers at Thornhill? A) I definitely do. I try my best to keep in touch with all of them

including the one of a kind Mr Burton. Q) Did you ever imagine the series would be so popular and win the awards it has? A) Not even a chance. As I've mentioned I’ve been honoured to not only be on TV but to see the show was a massive success. I can't thank the people in this nation enough for having so much love for me. I can't thank them enough for how much they have given me. Q) Have you received any messages from people with similar stammers who saw your experience on television? A) Yes, I speak to quite a few people who have stammers and they have really thanked me for the confidence boost I have given them. Q) How did ‘Stammer School’ come about? A) Stammer School actually came about after Educating Yorkshire was a success. There would be no Stammer School without the love Educating Yorkshire got. Many people were messaging and emailing TwoFour (the production team of EY) that they wanted to know what happened next. If I had really overcame my stammer. I still remember getting a call from Saskia Smith (the producer of EY) telling me that they wanted to make a new documentary only about Stammering and how it affects people in their daily lives. I was shocked but so pleased at how much positive reaction we got. Q) What was it like filming another documentary? A) This was absolutely perfect despite the fact I was fasting for nine or more hours due to Ramadan whilst filming the show. It’s shocking yet pleasing to see how many people stammer. I loved every part of it and wish I could relive it all over again. Q) What do you hope to do in the future? A) Right now I'm at college, I hope to study further and go to university. I'm also as I said before building a YouTube career.

Bilal Saeed speaks to the Asian Express Thursday 29th January 2015 was a date circled in many people’s calendars as Bilal Saeed’s highly anticipated single, ‘Kaash’, was finally released to fans around the world. After months of waiting, the song proved an instant hit as it climbed into the top ten of the
How long have you been working on the single?
Najma Akhtar
The woman who created a new genre of music infusing jazz with ghazals In 1987 a British-born vocalist, songwriter and actor achieved a significant place in World Music by creating a new musical genre by introducing subtle Jazz influences to the traditional genre of the Ghazal (Urdu ballad). Najma Akhtar having been born and raised in England and graduating in chemical engineering, has remained rooted in the music of India her ancestral home. Now she is back in the UK Play her music for the ground-breaking production ‘Singing Stones’ produced by Mama Quilla (see pages 26 & 27). Having proved to be a successful and versatile artiste over almost 20 years years, she has become worldrenowned for using modern jazz influences with Indian vocals to create a mesmerizing fusion of eastern and western styles. Her first solo release (1987) in the UK, ‘Qareeb’, was universally acclaimed as a groundbreaking recording in world music. Over the years, along with her eight solo albums, Najma has collaborated with an eclectic range of musical pioneers including, Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, Philip Glass, Andy Summers, Jah Wobble, Jethro Tull and Basement Jaxx. The artiste says she is constantly inspired by new sounds and
musical genres that resonate with Indian semi - classical, Folk, Sufi, Jazz, blues and leads her onto yet another musical journey that explores the synergies that exists between the ‘Ghazal’, Western Folk (Celtic), Blues and the Western Ballad. Having released 7 solo albums, from the groundbreaking jazz influenced ‘Qareeb’ to ‘Pukar’ (1992), which used a mix of Persian, Indian and African instruments to the “Indian Gothic” ‘Vivid’ (2002) which combined elements of Indian, Arabic and Western classical music, culminating in Rishte (2009) in which Najma collaborates with Grammy nominated NY based guitarist Gary Lucas to produce another milestone in crossover music by combining blues, soft rock and Indian influences. Collaborations include: working with Robert Plant & Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Philip Glass, Basement Jaxx, Jah Wobble, Andy Summers of The Police, Jethro Tull, Steve Coleman and Stan Harrison. Her voice can also be heard on numerous motion picture soundtracks including Hanif Kureishi’s ‘Sammy and Rosie Get Laid’, Robert Altman’s ‘Pret a Porter’ and ‘People I Know’ starring Al Pacino and Kim Basinger.
iTunes chart within hours of release, downloaded by thousands around the world. Catching up with the Asian Express Newspaper, Bilal spoke of how his latest single saw him return to his roots and promised more tracks in the near future.
It’s been almost six months since we started recording the song and obviously we had to go through the process for the visuals as well so it has taken a long time. In order to get the right vibe, I had to come here, to the UK, because the emotion I wanted to put across with the song needed the right scenery for the video. We decided on Scotland which was a really suitable setting and we managed to have a two-day shoot over there.
arrived on the scene. The eight or ten years before that were a struggle for me because I used to work in the studios as a composer and sound engineer, recording other singers and their vocals. After my first song proved a big hit worldwide I was able to gather a fanbase who are always waiting for my songs. Today (29th January), we dropped Kaash to these fans and it is already in top ten in iTunes. I feel very excited about it because I know people have been waiting a long time and I look forward to hearing their views on the song.
How does it feel to finally release Kaash to your fans?
How does Kaash differ from previous tracks?
It’s been four years since I
The majority of my songs recently have been like dance music, with fun lyrics, but the first song which I initially started with, and what earned me my reputation, was actually an emotional one. My fans started following me from that first song and I think they’ve been missing that deep vibe. That is how this song is different to what I’ve been producing for the last two years or so. With Kaash, you can just sit back and listen. It is the perfect song for this winter weather.
Can we expect a new album to come out anytime soon? At the moment, Kaash is just a single and I plan on releasing a few more tracks before we do anything with an album. I already have a number of singles ready and they will be released soon, with the next one due in a couple of months. At the moment, I want to drop a song and then as soon as that one starts moving down the charts, bang, another one comes out and that one goes to the top. As for the album, I’m just waiting for the right time. These days, when you release an album, it often doesn’t do justice to all the songs.
Does it give your singles more chance to be heard by releasing them separately? Definitely. I think what happens is that whenever someone drops an album, it doesn’t matter if you have ten really good songs, people are always going to pick the first one and listen to that one the most. That is the one that has been promoted and that is the one with a video. By releasing singles separately, it gives each track more time and more exposure which is only a good thing.

Retrospective Reliance A
negligent misstatement exists when one party owes a duty of care to another party and carelessly makes a false statement on which the other party relies and as a result suffers a loss. The fundamental aspect for a Claimant to succeed in bringing a claim for negligent misstatement is that there must be reliance on a statement which has caused a loss. The Court of Appeal, in overturning the initial decision in the Technology and Construction Court confirmed in the case of Hunt and others -v- Optima (Cambridge) Ltd, Strutt & Parker and others that reliance on a negligent misstatement cannot be retrospective. In this case, Optima (the developer landlord) had built a block of flats in Peterborough and had engaged with property consultants, Strutt & Parker (“S&P”), to conduct a survey on the flats and produce certificates attesting the satisfactory construction of the flats. Before buying the flats the purchasers were told that the certificates to be supplied by S&P were similar to a guarantee provided by the National House Building Council when there is a new development of houses for example. A draft copy was provided to the purchasers who were told that they would receive the issued certificates on completion.
Soon after the purchasers had moved into their new flats, to their horror, they became noticeably defective. Problems included leaking roofs, defective plumbing and drainage issues. A total of 19 defects were identified in one individual flat. A number of purchasers brought a claim against S&P for negligently carrying out the surveys on the flats and recording incorrect information in the certificate. The key issue for the Court to decide was whether the purchaser, when purchasing the lease, relied on the certificate which was not issued until after the contracts had exchanged. Initially the Court held in favour of the purchasers, finding that it was immaterial that the certificates were received after the exchange of contracts. S&P were found to be in breach of their duty of care as the certificates were held to be enforceable warranties. An appeal from this decision was allowed by the Court of Appeal who considered the following; (1) Were the certificates enforceable warranties? No words such as ‘warranty’ or ‘promise’ were used in the wording of the certificate. The certificates were negotiated by professionals who knew the industry well and should have known the difference between a warranty and a mere representation. The Court of Appeal held that the certificate could not be construed as a warranty. (2) Was there a negligent misstatement? The certificate was only a draft copy when relied upon by the purchasers. The Court of Appeal held that a document which was unsigned and unissued was capable of being amended at any time and could in fact not be issued at all. A document bearing such flexibility could not incur liability for negligent misstatement. The case highlights that purchasers of a lease need to be diligent when considering all documentation before signing any contract. All documents relied on should be their final form with clear wording of their intentions. We at Blacks deal with all aspects of property law acting for both landlords and tenants in all matters arising in respect of leases as well as dealing with claims for negligent misstatement.

India’s rail network aims to get back on track India will raise railway freight rates on coal, iron ore and steel from 1st April to help fund an expansion of its well-worn network, a move that threatens to raise costs for local steel makers at a time when demand is weak and imports are surging. The government plans to increase its annual freight carrying capacity to 1.5billion tonnes from one-billion tonnes, in part with the funds from the higher rates, railways minister Suresh Prabhu said in a speech presenting his ministry's budget for the fiscal year starting on 1st April.
Prabhu did not say by when the expansion would be completed. The rates for coal transport will rise by 6.3 percent, while those for iron ore and steel will increase 0.8 percent. Charges for the transport of urea and grains will also go up 10 per cent. But there will be no change in passenger fares. Over the next five years, India will raise investment in its overloaded railway network to 8.5trillion rupees (£88billion), the government said on Thursday.

Luxury carmaker says that work is underway to produce an all-terrain high-bodied vehicle (don’t let them catch you saying SUV), which will cost around £200,000.
Rolls Royce plans to launch high four-wheel drive vehicle by 2018… but don’t call it a SUV!
By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk
It seems that Rolls Royce is joining rivals Bentley and Jaguar in catering to demand for upmarket 4x4 models. The 111-year-old marque, owned by German car firm BMW, said customers had asked it to add the as-yet
unnamed vehicle to its existing saloon models – the Phantom, Ghost and Wraith. But without mentioning SUV, 4x4 or other names normally used for off-road vehicles, Rolls-Royce’s bosses said in an open letter that they would “produce a high-bodied car that could cross any terrain”.

Rolls Royce chairman, Peter Schwarzenbauer and chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös said in a joint statement that the new car was not a radical departure for the venerable brand and that the move reflected Rolls-Royce’s rugged roots. “Rolls-Royces conveyed pioneers and adventurers like Lawrence of Arabia across the vastness of
unexplored deserts and over mountain ranges. In other parts of the world including Australia, India and the Americas, Rolls-Royces carried their owners over challenging terrain with absolute reliability and comfort. Rest assured, we are creating a motor car in the greatest traditions of our marque.” A spokesman said: “The words sport and utility don’t feature in the RollsRoyce lexicon and that was why it was important not to say those words and nor will we ever.” At least three years of planning by the Rolls-Royce’s team have resulted in a design for the car, which will hit forecourts in 2017 or 2018. The company has been wary of undermining its brand but has seen competitors such as Porsche, Bentley and Jaguar go ahead with plans for their own models. An industry analyst said that global sales of premium and luxury SUVs has risen from around 397,000 in 2000 to 1.2 million in 2014 and is forecasted to rise to more than 1.3 million by 2020.

END OF AN ERA Bugatti to take its 450th and final Veyron to Geneva Motor Show
At last Bugatti has managed to shift the last few remaining €1million Veyrons, and will celebrate this achievement by bringing the 450th and final model to the Geneva Motor Show next month. Speaking with Auto Motor und Sport, Bugatti president Wolfgang Durheimer revealed the final car will be built this year, but that we shouldn’t expect to see the Veyron’s successor anytime soon. To “make the best even better” does not happen overnight, especially as the new model “must do everything better than its predecessor." Thankfully, Bugatti buyers are a patient bunch. "Many of our customers are art collectors, and they know that it takes time to create a work of art." Tipped to be called the Bugatti Chiron, the new model will be lighter, more responsive, and betterhandling than the Veyron. It’ll be built on an existing carbon fiber architecture, but 92 percent of the parts will be all-new or heavily modified. The Veyron’s 8.0-liter, quad-turbocharged W16
will carry over with output boosted from 1,200 to 1,500 horsepower, which will be done via direct fuel injection and electric turbochargers. These will provide fast-acting torque, likely to peak around 1,000 lbft, sent to all four wheels through a sevenspeed dual-clutch transmission. Bugatti expects a top speed of around 288 mph with this setup. While we await that car with eager anticipation we look forward to bidding farewell to one of the cars of our generation in Geneva.

Porsche has just announced its newest addition to the family – the Porsche Cayman GT4 which is perhaps the most anticipated new performance car of 2015. Why? Because this is the car that should finally demonstrate the full potential of the brilliant Cayman mid-engined chassis. This is the first time Porsche has introduced such a focused GT model based on the mid-engined, two-seat Cayman coupe. Sharing components and genetic spirit with the iconic 911 GT3, a lap time of 7 min 40 sec around the Nürburgring Nordschleife places the Cayman GT4 emphatically as the new benchmark at the top of its market segment. It also makes a clear statement that Porsche will continue to promote radical two-door sports cars now and in the future - sports cars that are developed at the company’s Motorsport department in Weissach. The engine, chassis, brakes and aerodynamic design of the Cayman GT4 are configured for maximum driving dynamics; yet the top model still retains the versatility and everyday utility that are typical of a Porsche. The Cayman GT4 is powered by a mid-mounted, 3.8-litre flat-six engine with 385 hp (283 kW) produced at 7,400 rpm, which is derived from the 911 Carrera S engine. Its power is transmitted by a standard six-speed manual gearbox with dynamic gearbox mounts - there is no PDK transmission option. This translates in to acceleration from zero to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds; top speed is 183 mph. The car's NEDC fuel consumption is 27.4 mpg, equivalent to 238 g/km CO2. The body is lowered by 30 mm versus the standard Cayman, and features a purposefully-proportioned brake system. Furthermore, the chassis has been comprehensively fine-tuned with many components shared with the 911 GT3. The new GT4 is clearly differentiated from its brothers in the Cayman range. Three distinctive inlet openings in the nose and a large fixed rear wing are part of an aerodynamic package which is systematically designed to not only reduce lift but also generate downforce. Upon request, the Cayman GT4 can be equipped even more comprehensively for more sporting, or track day driving. Options include PCCB ceramic brakes, shell-backed seats made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), a custom Sport Chrono Package with the unique Track Precision app, and a Club Sport Package. The interior of the Cayman GT4 is designed so that the driver and passenger can become immersed in unfiltered driving enjoyment. Sports seats, upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara, are distinguished by very good lateral support. Due to its compact dimensions, the new GT4 sports steering wheel guarantees ideal control and direct steering feedback. Technical aspects of the new Cayman GT4 are based on the 911 GT3. As a mid-engined sports car and a prime example of driving dynamics in its class, it follows the conceptual tradition of such cars as the 904 GTS, 911 GT1, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. New ‘Progression’ and ‘Junior’ models added to Alfa Romeo MiTo range Building on the comprehensive revisions made to the Alfa Romeo MiTo in 2014, the new MiTo “Progression” makes the dream of owning a new Alfa Romeo more attainable while the sporty new “Junior” recalls the legacy of the 1966 Alfa Romeo GT 1300. It may be the new entry point into the Alfa Romeo range, but the MiTo Progression comes equipped with the high levels of features expected of a premium hatchback including air conditioning; a leather steering wheel and gear shifter and Alfa Romeo’s Uconnect™ five-inch colour touch screen infotainment system with Bluetooth®; voice recognition; USB / auxiliary inputs and steering wheel remote controls. In terms of safety, the MiTo Progression is equipped with Vehicle Dynamic Control (stability, braking and traction control with hill-holder), TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring) and seven airbags, while its undeniable visual appeal is further enhanced with 15-inch alloy wheels,
a rear spoiler and titanium grey headlight and rear light surrounds. The Alfa Romeo MiTo Progression is offered with a choice of engines including the insurancefriendly 78hp 1.4-litre engine, which is reintroduced with Start&Stop and EU6 certification resulting in an official combined fuel economy figure of 50.4 MPG and CO2 emissions of 130g/km. The official 0-60 MPH for the 1.4 78hp engine is 13.0 seconds and its top speed is 103 MPH. The awardwinning 0.9-litre TwinAir 105hp turbo petrol engine (67.3 MPG / 99g/km) and 1.3-litre JTDM-2 85hp turbo-diesel (80.7 MPG / 90g/km) engines are also
available with the Progression trim level, priced from £13,770 OTR and £14,315 OTR respectively. The new Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior aims to broaden the appeal of the MiTo range still further by offering stylish but attention-grabbing looks within an affordable and insurable package. It builds on the high specification of the MiTo Progression but adds 17-inch alloy wheels with a brilliant white finish as well as matching door mirror caps and distinctive new “Junior” boot decal, also finished in white. Other enhancements include front
fog lights; a sports rear bumper and satin-effect door handles with matching headlamp and tail-lamp surrounds, while the interior benefits from special Junior upholstery, Junior floor mats and a flat-bottom sports steering wheel with contrasting stitching. Under the bonnet, the Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior is powered by the 0.9litre TwinAir 105hp turbo petrol engine (0-60MPH in 11.4 seconds / 114 MPH) and 1.3-litre JTDM-2 85hp turbo-diesel (0-60MPH in 12.9 seconds / 108 MPH) and is priced from £14,870 OTR and £15,415 OTR
respectively. The Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior was inspired by the stunning Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior from 1966 which combined the gorgeous looks of the Giugiaro-styled 105/115 Series coupe with a small-capacity version of the legendary all-alloy Alfa Romeo Twin-Cam engine. Developed with Italian taxation in mind (which penalised larger engines), the Junior GT 1300 amassed 91,000 sales (accounting for 69 percent of all 105/115 Series built) and has become very collectable in its own right thanks to its purity and character, as well as the larger number of enthusiasts whose earliest Alfa Romeo memories are of that very car.
• Two new models added to the Alfa Romeo MiTo range in 2015 • Progression is the new entry-level specification, featuring air conditioning, alloy wheels and Uconnect™ touchscreen infotainment system as standard • EU6-compliant 78hp 1.4-litre petrol engine reintroduced with Start&Stop • New Junior model evokes spirit of the widely-revered 1966 original and is available either with a 0.9-litre TwinAir 105hp turbo petrol engine or a 1.3-litre JTDM-2 85hp turbo-diesel • Both models are on sale now, with prices starting at £12,760 OTR for the Alfa Romeo MiTo Progression 1.4 78hp and £14,870 OTR for the Alfa Romeo Junior TwinAir 0.9 105hp

Tee Hee! It’s the ticklish Toyota It gives you mirth not miles per gallon and its emissions are guffaws, chortles and sniggers rather than exhaust gases. Welcome to the world’s first ticklish car, courtesy of Toyota and Mr Tickle. This giggling Yaris really does react when you tickle its tender spots and it’s ready to hit the road on a mission to raise laughs and lots of cash for Red Nose Day. As an official Red Nose Day partner, Toyota has turned from hybrid power to hilarity to engineer this strictly oneoff model. Red Nose Day legend Lenny Henry has shared his own distinctive laugh with the car as part of its repertoire of hysteria and hilarity. The ha-ha-hatchback will be officially unveiled by the Mr Men’s own Mr Tickle, Toyota’s celebrity consultant on the project, on 16 February. This will mark the start of a busy schedule of appearances for the car around the country at Red Nose Day fund-raising events for Comic Relief, including the Danceathon taking place at Wembley Arena on 8th March. An initial list of appearance venues and dates is provided below. What’s as much fun as the Toyota itself is the story behind its creation, captured in a fly-on-the-wall documentary to be released on the same day the car makes its debut. If Land Rover has just revealed the first glimpse of the 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque, previewing a striking new headlamp signature for the most successful Land Rover ever produced. The 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque will be the first Land Rover to feature full LED adaptive headlamps when it makes its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on 3 March 2015. The powerful technology provides superior illumination in dark
you ever thought it was easy being funny, the comic agonies of these corporate comedians will make you think again. The short film will be released through Toyota’s official social media channels. Mr Tickle said: “I was tickled pink to be part of this brilliant idea. And thanks to my long arms and tickly fingers, I was able to help the designers add tickle-points to all those hard-to-reach
places. “I hope the Toyota and the funny movie will make everyone smile and give what they can to wonderful Red Nose Day.” Matt Harrison, Toyota GB President, said: “Toyota has made millions of cars, but never one like this before. We hope the special Ticklish Toyota will help people have a real hoot raising money for Red Nose Day.”
2016 model Range Rover Evoque previewed conditions, following the curves of the road, and is identifiable by the distinctive headlamp graphic. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and
Chief Creative Officer, said: “Our challenge has been to enhance Evoque without diluting its iconic design. The design refreshments give it an even greater presence on
the road yet retain the emotional appeal that has made it so popular with more than 400,000 consumers around the world.” The 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque includes a new engine lineup, new safety and convenience features, and interior enhancements all wrapped in the trademark exterior design. Further details of the 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque will be released on 23 February 2015.

England call-up for table tennis ace
TALENT: Shayan Siraj is currently ranked as one of the top Under-14 table tennis players in the country and will aim to live up to that title next month at the Home Nations
Shayan Serves up Success A table tennis enthusiast from Leeds will proudly bear the English colours next month as he represents the country in the Home Nations tournament. Shayan Siraj will travel to Cardiff with his team in the middle of March as they aim to establish themselves at the top of the British rankings. Despite only just reaching his teen years, the 13-year-old from Bramhope already has his eyes set on becoming world number one in the future and is currently ranked third in England for under-14s.
His career highlights to date include finishing second in the under-13 national championships and third in the under-14 competition. Most recently last month, he topped the performance list by winning all his games for his beloved Yorkshire County in the UK County Nationals, helping his team retain their National County Cadets title. Now, with the Home Nations tournament just a couple of weeks away, he hopes to etch a new award onto his growing list of achievements.
Of course, despite being so young, success hasn’t just fallen on the lap of Shayan who has had to work hard for everything he has got. He began his table tennis career at the age of ten when he was spotted by English Table Tennis Association’s (ETTA) talent hunter, Sally Shutt. Through continuous, dedicated training, he began to rise up the ranks of the junior leagues and is now trained by Shahryar Masoudi, a former international and Level 3 Coach in the UK, as well as Sally.
It takes eighteen hours of practice sessions a week to keep Shayan at the top of his game and this dedication has helped him forge a reputation in the junior and senior ranks. The talented teen even travelled to China two years ago to train with some of the world’s highest ranked coaches, whilst his family home has been renovated to include a full-size table tennis table and all the latest equipment. Shayan’s sporting adventure often sees him travel the globe in pursuit of becoming the nation’s
top player, and is now sponsored by Swedish company STIGA, who provide all his equipment and kits. Perhaps most importantly though, it is the home comforts which mean the most to the rising ace who takes his mother’s ‘renowned Red Rice’ everywhere he goes. With just a couple of weeks left to finalise his preparations for the Home Nations, Shayan will be hoping to make sure that his recipe for success matches his undeniable hunger for victory.

THE BEAST FROM THE EAST – GENNADY GOLOVKIN By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
Boxer Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KO’s) is a polite man and wellspoken. In his appearance he looks like a simple, kind person and the type of guy who would help an elderly lady across the road. His dress sense is simple and usually consists of a vneck sweater and a sensible haircut with a warm smile. However they say looks can be deceiving and it’s definitely the case when it comes to Golovkin who is a boxing beast in the boxing ring. British fighter Martin Murray challenged Golovkin on Saturday night and the outcome was as expected with the referee stopping the boxing bout in the 10th round and declaring Golovkin the clear winner. Golovkin is a WBA middleweight and WBC interim world champion from Karaganda, Kazakhstan. He has a 90 per cent knockout percentage that is the highest of any middleweight champion in the history of the sport. As a child Golovkin would regularly get into street fights with men a lot older then himself and manage to beat them and according to him this was the stage of his life when he realised his fighting attributes and decided to take up boxing. Golovkin as an amateur boxer managed to win the World Championship gold in 2003 and a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics. He has fought in over 350 amateur and 32
Khalil Alam
professional boxing bouts and has never suffered a knockout defeat or been staggered by any opponent to date. Golovkin’s previous notable boxing victims have been Marco Antonio Rubio, Daniel Geale, Nobuhiro Ishida and Matt Macklin who have all suffered from crushing knockout defeats. Golovkin says his boxing success is not only due to him being a puncher and it is more to do with his boxing aggressiveness, speed, positioning and tactics. Golovkin is next in line to challenge Miguel Cotto for his WBC title but that bout is proving very difficult to make happen. Golovkin however doesn’t think that his opponent has fear to fight him and has said "Miguel Cotto isn't scared; he's just a very smart guy. However I’m ready for everybody and it’s important for me to prove that I’m the best in the middleweight division.” I personally do not see Golovkin managing to secure any meaningful bouts at middleweight and I would personally like to see him move up to supermiddleweight and fight some of the more elite fighters of boxing. Golovkin has already expressed an interest to fight the current best pound for pound boxer Floyd Mayweather at a catch weight and also British super-middleweight hard man Carl Froch even though both of them boxers are now near the end of their careers and a fight against Golovkin will more than likely not happen. In my opinion also Golovkin is the new breed of fighter and what the Murray fight proved to me was that Golovkin doesn’t only possess the skill and power, but he also has that unique ability to take his opponents hardest punches and still keep coming forward to seek and destroy. Golovkin “the beast from the east” is certainly the next boxing superstar without a doubt.

England off the mark Ali stars with the bat in victory over Scotland
It may not be the most impressive victory on paper, yet England’s 119run victory over Scotland last weekend could be just the result needed to kick-start their World Cup campaign. Coming into the match off the back of two heavy defeats at the hands of cohosts Australia and New Zealand, the three lions had to be on top of their game against a Scottish side determined to register their first upset of the tournament. Moeen Ali starred with the bat to score 128 runs, and helped forge an opening partnership with Ian Bell of 172 before the stuttering batsman was finally dismissed for 54. Ali continued the charge and reached his century after 91 balls, before he was finally dismissed when he lofted Majid Haq to young Freddie

Coleman. The 27-year-old’s dismissal signalled a mini-collapse for England with only Eoin Morgan reaching a score of over 25 to secure the side a final score of 303-8 after 50 overs. Meanwhile, in reply, Scotland’s former skipper, Kyle Coetzer, was once again trying to lead his side from the front, reaching his fifty from 64 balls. The England bowlers were struggling against the former Northampton batsman yet were finding joy at the other end of the wicket, dismissing Calum Macleod, Coleman and Machan for single figures. It was talisman Ali, who had earlier starred with the bat, that finally bowled out Coetzer on 73, when his delivery was caught by Chris Woakes. Only three other Scotland players reached double figures in their innings with Steven Finn claiming best figures of 26-3 from his nine overs. Scotland captain Preston Mommsen, said his side fancied their chances in Christchurch after winning the toss yet accepted the ‘quality’ in the opposition’s squad was too good on the day. England’s next fixture will see them face-off against Sri Lanka on Sunday 1st March, with a win set to propel them up the table and leave them looking good for a quarter-final spot next month.

Ikram continued: “As part of the rugby development tour, Qari Asim will deliver a seminar on the benefits of sport and faith with Chris Green also delivering a seminar on the White

All roads lead to Rome for Schoey and BARA
Rugby League legend Garry Schofield OBE has accepted the challenge of becoming Director of Rugby for a forthcoming BARA (British Asian Rugby Association) tour of Italy which could involve a meeting with the Pope. The BARA team will take on a Federation Italian Rugby Football League (FIRFL) XIII in Rome on the 16th May with the two teams playing for the White Ribbon Trophy. The match, and possible Papal meeting, forms part of BARA’s support for the White Ribbon Campaign, a global initiative made up of men speaking out against violence towards women and girls as well as encouraging interfaith dialogue. The BARA team will be wearing a special jersey deigned in support of the campaign and have been working in close collaboration with FIRFL on a number of initiatives including raising awareness of the White Ribbon Campaign in Italy. Garry Schofield commented: “When Ikram (Butt) approached me about this position I was very excited about the prospect of returning to rugby league and lending my advice to this association and the players,” he said. “I have been away from the game for a while now for whatever reason but I am delighted to be back in this role. “I won’t be teaching players how to pass or tackle necessarily as they are professionals and will already know these things, but if I can lend any advice about things they may not have known, or noticed before, I will be more than happy to do so.”
