India's censor board chief has resigned after reports that a film originally rejected by her panel has been cleared for release by an appeals board. Leela Samson got involved in a spat after the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal approved the film ‘Messenger of God’, directed by and starring guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. Ms Samson and her team for the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had found the film unsuitable for the public because it promoted superstition. She also accused the state-run CBFC of "corruption and coercion". Ms Samson took over in August last year after the board's former chief was arrested on charges of corruption. Ms Samson said the apparent clearance of the film was "a mockery" of her organisation
after Ms Samson's panel rejected it. "My resignation is final," she told the Press Trust of India news agency. A CBFC member, Nandini Sardesai, said she was concerned the film was cleared in haste. "We all saw the movie. It was the collective decision of eight of us that the movie was not suitable for public viewing," Ms Sardesai said. "Usually the Tribunal takes 15 to 30 days to clear a film, but this case was cleared within 24 hours." Ms Sardesai has been quoted saying that they had rejected the film because it "promotes superstition and blind faith". The guru's website mentions ‘Messenger of God’ as a "movie which aims to spread social awareness in the society". "While the whole story depicts the truth, yet action, suspense and
drama are also being added to make it more interesting". Ms Samson said she had resigned because of "interference, coercion and corruption" of the government-appointed members and officers of the board. Last August, the former president of the board Rakesh Kumar was arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a film producer and removed from the position. Films cannot be publicly exhibited in India unless they have been certified by the board, which is based in Mumbai and has nine regional offices. According to its website, the board has a legally empowered mission to "ensure healthy
entertainment, recreation and education to the public". Its approval process can be slow and laborious, with multiple rounds of cuts, sometimes demanded before one of its four certificates is granted.
“I have married!” Pakistan’s politician Imran Khan admits to rumours of his marriage with former weather girl
Imran Khan has finally confirmed whispers about his secret marriage to a former BBC weather girl, just days after his family said he had denied it - provoking a furious reaction from his sister. The 62-year-old Pakistan cricketer-turned-politician, who divorced heiress Jemima Goldsmith in 2004, has wed 41-year-old divorced mother-of-three Reham Khan. Mysteriously on New Year's Eve, Mr Khan had dismissed rumours of marriage saying that they were 'greatly exaggerated'. His sister Aleema had spoken to the press and said the family challenged him 'a few days ago' over the news and he had categorically denied it. Speaking to reporters at Heathrow airport on Monday 5th January before boarding a flight, Khan is reported to have said: “I am going to Pakistan to share good news about my marriage with the nation. I have nothing to hide.” When Mr Khan’s sister was informed that her brother had revealed he was actually married, Aleema Khan (according to media sources) said: “Really? Really? Let’s see if he announces it officially. I am taken aback. This is a real challenge for him. We haven’t met her and I don’t know that we want to meet her.” Aleema Khan said that she was concerned about his children: “I

suppose in any situation like this the children will not feel good about it. They do look up to their father,” she added. She added that she’s keen to see how Pakistan’s public respond to the news. Ms Khan, a divorced mother-ofthree, was formerly a BBC weather girl and married to a doctor, but now works as a news anchor of an Asian TV news channel. News of the union in Pakistan has been vastly negative causing outrage, with online abusers setting up Facebook hate pages attacking the TV news anchor. Ms Khan is being accused of being a lesbian for stroking a woman's back in a picture. Other internet trolls have attempted to
shame her for wearing short skirts, partying and dancing in clubs, and even claim to be in possession of topless pictures. One image even seems to show Ms Khan in a sex shop wearing a pink nightdress, suspenders with a collar around her neck and a whip slung over her shoulder. Imran's ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith revealed in October 2014 that she was ditching the surname ‘Khan’ and reverting to her family name because her exhusband was about to remarry. Imran married Ms Goldsmith in a traditional Islamic ceremony in Paris in 1995. She had converted to Islam prior to their wedding and had learned Urdu and started to wear traditional Pakistani clothes.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui clarifies on his Hollywood film opposite Nicole There is a price that one has to pay for success, and even the master and passionate actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who still has his feet firmly on the ground, has to face it. For those of you who are not quite familiar with him, he’s had a subtle climb in the industry and now has some noticeable and acclaimed performances in films tucked under his belt. He’s earnt his respect in films such as ‘Black Friday’ (2004), ‘New York’ (2009), ‘Peepli Live’ (2010), ‘Kahani’ (2012), ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ (2012) and ‘Talaash’ (2012). We were quite shocked when we heard rumours that Nawazuddin’s PR had claimed that he is starring in a film opposite Nicole Kidman and has scenes with her. When we called Nawaz, he was shooting for Kabir Khan’s next project, and promised to get back to us as soon as he was through, and as always he did.
Here is what Nawaz said: “You know me very well. I don’t have a PR as I am here to work and if my director is satisfied, that gives me utmost satisfaction. I don’t know where it came from that I’m doing a Hollywood film opposite Nicole.” Giving us the exclusive details Nawaz told us: “You know I had this very nice mail from Garth Davis, where he asked me to do this one scene/short appearance in his film. If you want I can forward it to you. That is it! And I’m doing it. “I don’t have the gift of the gab, but as my well-wishers had advised I try to talk, give interviews and answer queries. But not while I am shooting, as I have my utmost attention and focus on that. “The only person I talk to is my mother who is sick, not even my brothers or relatives. People have to understand that. It really pains me to read such unsubstantiated stories,” concludes the humble actor.

Discover the Legacy of Indian Cinema Art INSPIRATION: The first film of Indian cinema, Raja Harishchandra, is the inspiration behind the exhibition
Exciting art show arrives at local museum
An exhibition celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema legacy will launch at a Dewsbury Museum this weekend bringing a touch of South Asian history to West Yorkshire. The ‘Legacy of Indian Cinema Art’, or ‘LOICA’, drew in large crowds when it was shown briefly for a day at the Batley Festival last year with many onlookers commenting on the unique exhibition. Now local people will get another, longer chance to enjoy it when it is displayed at the museum in Crow Nest Park, Heckmondwike Road, from Saturday 10th January until Friday 20th March. The project, by the Batley-based Kirklees Filmmakers, was brought to life with the help and collaboration of 10 artists from across different spectrums including dance, theatre, play, art, music and film. Meirul Din, the Creative and Artistic Director, said: “I am delighted to present LOICA. Our exhibition comprises art produced by very talented artists who have worked with participants from across Kirklees and Bradford. “LOICA, has been inspired by Indian Cinema, bringing together the sparkle and rich and diverse colours from Bollywood, whilst using Kandinsky’s technique of representation and abstract art. We hope you visually enjoy the show.” The ‘show’ as Ms Din described it,

showcases 12 large canvasses that interpret scenes from the first film of Indian cinema, ‘Raja Harishchandra’, highlighting the vibrant Kandinsky colours of the time. As each scene unfolds, the viewer’s senses are livened by the spectacular ray of moodreflecting colours, from happiness to sadness and then onto tranquillity. The aim of the project, which involved 96 participants in the creation of the artwork, was to unite people from different cultures through an innovative creative activity and to form a legacy piece of art that will be toured across museums and art galleries for years to come. The exhibition can be viewed during Dewsbury Museum’s usual opening times with free admission for all.

Sahera continued: “There are a lot of misconceptions in our society about Islam and what it teaches so I decided to try and tackle some of these issues in the book with tales of my own experiences,” she said. “Once I decided to look at it from a religious angle it began to give the book a real purpose and it really started taking off. “Many people forget the difference between cultural

Sahera says she approached up to 50 publishers with her book, and despite many compliments, she was told it was not marketable, with one publisher quoted as saying ‘to an autobiography have published you have to be a murderer or a celebrity’. Taking inspiration from this, the first time author says she decided to entitle her life story ‘I’m not a Celebrity, I’m a Muslim...’ and finally landed a joint-contract publishing deal. ‘I’m not a Celebrity, I’m a Muslim’ is available to be purchased now from Amazon and is hoped to be in book stores soon.

Cover story continued The judge described the murder of Mrs Ahmed at the family home in Northolt, west London as "perfect barbarity". Ahmed was said to have "snapped like a twig" when he carried out the attack after losing his job as a supermarket manager. A Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) statement released following sentencing said Ahmed attacked his wife "with a large kitchen knife" and a "metal table leg causing numerous, severe injuries". After the "ferocious and brutal" killing, he fled the house but was picked up nearby by police who spotted he was sweating heavily and had bloodstains on his coat. The Old Bailey heard that Mrs Ahmed had previously called officers to the family home on a number of occasions following reports of violence, but no action was ever taken. Ahmed was born in Pakistan and came to the UK shortly before their marriage in 1998, which was arranged by the couple's mothers, who were cousins.

2313 in 2014 CONQUERED Fundraiser finishes UK to Syria challenge
FINISHED: Naheem’s challenge has involved a number of runs up and down the country, with the Lancashire Half-Marathon last weekend signalling the end of his journey
After 365 days of exhaustive running and cycling, Naheem Yacub has finally completed his ‘2,313 miles in 2014’ challenge. Setting himself the target of completing the distance, the equivalent of travelling from the UK to Syria, in aid of charity, the fundraiser from Leeds finally reached his target last weekend at the Lancashire half-marathon. Battling through the final 13 miles, with his injured ankle, the part-time barber, part-time supply teacher, has run marathons, halfmarathons, 10ks and even cycled the length of the country on his way to the goal. Speaking about finally reaching his target after 12 months of continuous effort, Naheem said: “When I crossed the finish line there was just this huge sense of relief that it was all finally over. I just sat on the ground and couldn’t quite believe it. “It is a bit strange on a morning now when I wake up and I don’t have to think, ‘it’s time to go on a run’, so I am enjoying that side of it. “To know I was able to raise so much money and awareness from the initiative as well certainly makes it all worthwhile at the end of the day as it will help two very important causes.” The two aforementioned causes chosen for the challenge are the Leeds Children’s Hospital and British Red Cross’ Syria Crisis Appeal with almost £5,000 raised to date to be shared between the pair. Naheem had initially planned on completing the total distance on foot with
only one leg of cycling – from Lands End to John O’Groats – on his way to the 2,313 target. However, after injuring his ankle, he was forced onto the bike saddle more often towards the end of the challenge, but made sure he still completed his last leg in his running shoes. “To have completed it all now and to have finished the final leg back in Lancashire where I first began the challenge in January 2014, just all seems so surreal,” he said. “It was very painful on my ankle at times and I should have really gone to the doctors but I know they would have just said ‘rest it’ and I just didn’t have the time to do that. Maybe I do now.” Asked whether he will be completing the return 2,313 miles any time soon, Naheem added that he was not sure that he had another year’s worth of dedicated running in the tank at the moment but is still fundraising over the next few weeks. “We have a couple of bucket collections arranged for this month and I will be donating a full day’s takings from the barbers at the start of February,” he said. “Hopefully these extra funds will take us past our next milestone.” He added: “I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated because it wouldn’t have been possible without them.” If you would like to sponsor Naheem you can still do so by visiting his fundraising page at uk.virginmoneygiving.com.

maligned The 28-year-old daughter of noted UK-based Punjabi singer Malkit Singh MBE has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for having sexual relations with her pupil, a minor with learning difficulties. Malkit Singh MBE, who’s successes include ‘Gurh Nalo Ishq Mitha’ and ‘Tootak Tootak Thootian (Hey Jamaolo)’, has since faced a barrage of vicious abuse via social media since his daughter’s case went public. Amardip Bhopari, of Foley Road East in Birmingham, began teaching at the academy school which catered for pupils with learning difficulties in 2012. The teacher showered gifts on the 16-year-old boy and also plied him with drink while she groomed him. The first physical contact with
the 16-year-old boy, who suffers from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia, began in February 2013. Bhopari had sent a text to the boy and arranged to meet him in the art room, where she performed a sexual act on him. She further went on to having sexual encounters with him in an industrial estate near the school, in her car and at her home. Bhopari also took the victim to a Formula 1 hotel on his birthday where they stayed all day and where the defendant gave him vodka. Matters came to light in December 2013 and Bhopari was arrested. John Smitheman, defending, said Bhopari, who had left the academy as a result of the
matters being discovered, was full of remorse. She had got a job at the school without any teaching qualifications where it appeared she was a great success. Bhopari, who admitted three charges of sexual activity with a child on 16th January, was ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years. Judge James Burbidge QC said: “I do not suggest you sought him out as vulnerable. “However as a teacher you owed him a duty of care that all teachers must owe to a child. “You had sex with him in public places, on an industrial estate and hotels and you also provided him with experiences that, as a 16-year-old, meant that he would be attached to you.”

UKIP chief steps down due to ‘busy schedule’
The anti-EU, UK Independence Party, abruptly replaced its policy chief on Tuesday, less than four months before a national election, because it said he was too busy to finish writing the party's manifesto. Political rivals have accused UKIP, which wants Britain to leave the European Union and to curb immigration, of lacking policies on other issues. The manifesto, eagerly awaited by critics and supporters, is designed to disprove that charge. A UKIP spokesman said outgoing policy chief Tim Aker had stood down in favour of Suzanne Evans, the party's deputy chairman, to focus on other party commitments. Aker is also a UKIP member of the European Parliament, a local councillor in England and is campaigning for a seat in the 7th May British parliamentary election. UKIP sources denied a report that Aker had been sacked for failing to deliver a final draft of the manifesto by the start of January. "He asked to stand down, it's definitely not a sacking," one source told Reuters. Evans, the new policy chief, said it was only Aker's commitments as an MEP that had prevented him from carrying on, calling him ‘a tough act to follow’. Aker also tweeted: “Delighted to have handed over strong policy brief to the excellent @SuzanneEvans1. Now on to winning #Thurrock in May!”
PRIORITIES: Tim Aker, former policy chief at UKIP, stood down from his position earlier this week to focus on his other commitments with the party
In reply, Evans tweeted back: “Fab @Tim_Aker is extremely bright & done excellent job on @ukip policy. Only MEP commitments mean he can't continue. A tough act to follow.” UKIP is expected to unveil its manifesto at the end of February. The party has had problems with manifestos before with UKIP leader, Nigel Farage, once calling the 2010 manifesto ‘drivel’. Pollsters have predicted UKIP could win around six seats in May and YouGov on Tuesday put its support at 15 per cent, behind Labour and the ruling Conservatives, who were on 32 per cent each.

A police officer from Leeds, who rescued a family from a fire at their home earlier this month, has been praised for his bravery and quick response to a potentially fatal incident. Response officer, PC Umer Saeed, was called out to a house in the Ireland Wood area of the city in the early hours after receiving a 999 call from a child. Upon arrival at the Luttrell Crescent address, the officer and his colleague saw the family in the upstairs window looking ‘distressed’, as smoke spread through the home. With the fire service still not in attendance, the officer grabbed a brick to smash through a downstairs window and climbed into the premises with the help of a garden chair. PC Saeed said: “We needed to get to the family as soon as possible and the front and back doors were high security ones that we knew we couldn’t break down. “I’ve had specialist training in getting in to buildings and identified the kitchen window as the most viable access point. I found a brick and smashed the window then climbed in. “The smoke was acrid and I couldn’t breathe but I was focused on finding them and
getting them out in one piece. It was quite a disorientating situation with the smoke alarm going off.” The fire had started after the cooker was left on by accident and despite attempts by the mother to control the situation by throwing a cloth over it, the blaze continued. She retreated from the smoke to an upstairs bedroom with her children where the fire service were then called. This is where PC Saeed found the family. “I ran up the stairs and checked every room before I found them in the furthest bedroom,” he added. “I ascertained where the keys for the doors were, as I didn’t want to get them out of the room, until I had a clear escape route to take them out. “The front door was locked and they didn’t have a key but they told me there was one in the back door. I ran back down to the kitchen and opened the back door and went upstairs and started getting them out. Fire fighters were on scene by this point, and I handed over to them”. The officer said he didn’t worry about the danger he was in during the fire, and acted as quickly as possible - the same
way he would have for his own family. “I didn’t think of it as putting myself at risk,” he said. “I quickly assessed the situation and decided I could get in safely and get them out. I could see they were frightened and needed immediate help.” The incident happened on the morning of 3rd January and PC Saeed has been back since to see the family who were staying with a relative after the fire. Temporary Chief Superintendent Mabs Hussain, Leeds District Commander, praised the officer’s work and commended his ‘bravery’. “PC Saeed clearly displayed the qualities of bravery and professionalism that we so often see from our officers and staff in situations where people are in danger,” he said. “He could see this family needed immediate help and his training gave him the confidence to assess the situation and intervene to bring them to safety from a potentially life-threatening situation. “I am very proud to have officers like him out there helping to keep our communities safe.”

Young British mum escapes Islamic State stronghold
A young mother who left Britain with her toddler to join Islamic State (IS) has told of her harrowing experience in the terrorist stronghold. Tareena Shakil from BurtonUpon-Trent in Staffordshire, secretly travelled to Raqqa, in Syria, with her 14-month-old son Zaheem in October, to marry a jihadist fighter after contacting him on social media. The teenager has spoken of her ordeal and her attempt to escape from the Middle East after fighters tried to force her to become a “jihadi bride”. She made a daring escape across the border into Turkey, scaling a barbed wire fence with her bare hands while begging snipers to spare her and her son’s lives. Now Tareena, who is currently in a Turkish detention centre awaiting deportation, has been reunited with her father Mohammad. She said: “I escaped death so many times. There were bombs coming down on the street where I lived every night - the house would shake. I didn't know if I was going to live or die. “Life is so hard there. There’s no hot water, no electricity for hours on end, none of the comforts we are used to in Britain. “One night there were around 30 bombs. The next morning I went out and there were body parts and blood everywhere. It was horrific.” And she warned of loved ones attempting to rescue IS converts: “Anyone who goes in from the West to try and rescue their loved ones is facing almost certain death.” Experts have warned that women are the new target for recruitment for IS, with researchers seeing "unprecedented" calls for fighters to marry British and European

£10,000 reward for JUSTICE

ROBBED: Mr Al-Kazhraji stands next to one of the engines which was not taken during the heist and appeals for help in tracing the stolen goods
‘Thugs stole my life’s work in one night’ A business owner in Batley is offering a £10,000 reward for information that could lead to the return of 23 boat engines, stolen from his workplace in a ‘life-changing robbery’ last week. 69-year-old Sam Al-Kazhraji, arrived at his workshop, off Brookroyd Lane, on Thursday 15th January to find his property had been targeted by thieves. The previous evening, a gang of robbers had used the site’s own forklift truck, to load goods onto the back of a lorry before driving them to an unknown location. Mr Al-Kazhraji, who owns West End Marine Ltd, said he could not believe it when he drove into the yard the following morning and saw the business had been robbed. “At around 8am we came up to the gates and you could see that they had been forced open,” he said. “I drove into the yard and then saw the roller shutter was open for the warehouse and a fork lift truck was in the yard which was very unusual. “It wasn’t until we inspected the building that we saw the extent of what had been taken. After that I felt sick all day. “All my staff have families and this is going to affect us all. If I lose my livelihood due to this burglary, the whole staff will lose there’s too. “I have worked my whole life to build this business up and these thugs came in one night and just took it all away.” As the business was still in the process of moving into the new site at the time of the burglary, the premises were still uninsured as a new alarm system had not yet been fitted. This has severely impacted the company’s operations and running costs, leading Mr Kazhraji to offer the substantial reward to anyone that can help find those responsible. “The £10,000 reward is very serious,” he said. “It is offered to anyone who can help trace the people responsible for the burglary and hopefully help return some

of the stolen goods.” The father-of-three adds that he has not been able to sleep since the theft and believes that the robbery was a ‘targeted’ one. “It was definitely a planned operation with military precision,” he said. “They took all the most expensive engines, propellers, starter motors and alternators. “The police agree that whoever did it had planned it for a long time beforehand. They even had an escape plan if they had been caught on the night, as the back lock had also been broken off.” The vehicle used in the robbery is believed to have been a 7.5tonne lorry with engines on the back. Mr Al-Kazhraji says it must have made more than one trip between the yard in Batley and wherever the engines were taken as the number of stolen goods weighed too much for one trip. Due to this, it is believed the lorry will not have been able to travel more than a 30 minute distance from the site on that night, with the full incident taking place between 10pm and midnight. The most expensive model of engine taken was the Volvo D-9 (pictured above) which can be noticed by its white appearance, around one-and-a-half metres long, and was wrapped in polythene. Other designs include: Yamaha, Volvo, Caterpillar, Iveco and Perkins. Det Insp Stef Wiseman, of Kirklees CID, said: “We don’t believe this was a random burglary. The engines are worth a lot of money and we believe the establishment was targeted because of what was in the premises. “I would appeal to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area on that night to get in contact. I would also appeal to anyone with an interest in boats to be on the lookout too. “If you are offered a boat engine or engines for sale in a deal that sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.” If you have any information about the robbery please contact the CID on 101.

Making it safe to ‘dine out’
Top 14 allergen ingredients singled out by restaurants and takeaways
ALLERGENS: The new regulations have been put in place to help people such as Reyneisha and Preyarnka Kumar who both suffer from allergies
Allergen sufferers across the UK will have a clearer picture of what foods are ‘safe to eat’ when dining out this year, due to new legislations put in place for all eateries. From 13th December 2014, restaurants and takeaways have been required by law to tell customers if any of the top 14 allergen ingredients are in the food they serve. The regulation comes in after research conducted by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) found that 70 per cent of people with allergies avoided ordering from takeaways due to the risk of allergic reactions, whilst 53 per cent added that they avoided restaurants for the same reason. Restaurants and takeaways now have to inform their customers about 14 specific allergens that range from widely known ingredients such as nuts and milk, to less widely recognised allergens including
mustard and lupin seeds, which are often used in flour. Around two-million people in the UK suffer from allergies including two per cent of adults and eight per cent of children. Amongst those children are sisters, Reyneisha and Preyarnka Kumar, from East London. Six-year-old Reyneisha is allergic to dairy, whilst her younger sibling cannot eat shellfish. Speaking about the condition, Preyarnka said: “I don’t like having an allergy. Sometimes my skin is so itchy I cannot sleep and then I am tired in the morning. “My mummy has shown me the food I must not eat so I must be very careful. It makes me sad.” It is hoped these changes will bring about a reduction in the number of allergic reactions caused by people accidentally eating food they are allergic to. On average 10 people die
and around 5,000 are hospitalised per year due to allergic reactions with the majority of these avoidable if the right information was available when eating out. Chun-Han Chan, Food Allergy Expert at the SFA said the number of hospital admissions due to allergic reactions has risen by 87 per cent over the last 12 years and hopes the new rules will combat this concern. “With a steady rise in the number of people suffering from food allergies and intolerances in the last decade, these new measures will make it simpler for those with allergies to buy and consume food,” he said. “The legislation is a huge step forward for those with allergies, who should now feel confident they have a right to ask about allergenic ingredients in the foods they buy. “This normalises allergen information as something that should be available at all times.”

Bradford man takes ‘World Curry Festival’ to international heights Many have earned esteem for exporting sand to Arabia, but how many have taken curry to Asia? This year the World Curry Festival founded in Bradford - the city which holds the title ‘Curry Capital of Britain’, will be doing just that when it transports some of it finest curry chefs and recipes to Malaysia. The World Curry Festival is set to premiere at the 6th Penang International Halal Expo and Conference between 30th January and 1st February 2015. Penang, an island situated on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is
famous as a centre for food, and historically known as ‘The Pearl of Orient’. As part of the event, the World Curry Festival will also be hosting an exclusive gala dinner at the Eastern Oriental Hotel in George Town – a UNESCO world heritage site. Dignitaries and VIPs attending the exclusive black-tie dinner include Penang’s State Governor, Chief Minister and Minister of Tourism and Culture, along with a host of international ambassadors, and representatives of the British High Commission.
Zulfi Karim, founder of the World Curry Festival, has personally designed the menu for the gala dinner. Commenting on the theme for the evening, he said: “The World Curry Festival gala dinner in Malaysia will be dedicated to ‘gastrodiplomacy’ – a kind of ‘cultural diplomacy’. “We first fell in love with the phrase when the World Curry Festival 2014 was officially opened by Mathew Barzun, the US Ambassador to the UK. “Having such a high profile figure open last year’s event in Bradford inspired us to concentrate on bringing the world together through curry. “This is one of the festival’s main aims, and we are delighted our first venture outside of the UK will be Malaysia.” The World Curry Festival will be bringing a team of renowned celebrity chefs from the UK, Pakistan, India and of course Malaysia, to the Halal Expo and Conference. The team will showcase their culinary skills in the aptly named ‘Spice Arena’ with a full programme available on www.worldcurryfestival.com Each of the cookery demonstrations at the World Curry Festival in Malaysia will focus on the ‘Great British Curry’. The festival, which was originally inspired by the 200 year anniversary of the first curry
house to open in the UK, is an advocate of the curry industry, and at its inaugural event in 2010, in Leeds, it recognised this important milestone. Five years on, the festival is celebrating taking a ‘great British institution’ global and yes...‘chicken tikka masala’ will be on the menu in Malaysia. Mr Karim comments: “The curry industry is worth £4billion to the British economy. The UK boasts some of the best curry chefs in the world alongside Michelin-starred curry restaurants and many famous curry brands. “Taking the World Curry Festival to Malaysia is a great opportunity to do business ‘over a curry’ as well as building relations with other cultures and traditions.”

Last week, the Home Secretary announced a new £10 million Police Knowledge Fund to support closer working between police and academia in order to promote evidence-based policing and more effective responses to crime. The Home Secretary, Theresa May, made the announcement during a keynote address to the inaugural International Crime and Policing Conference being hosted by the Home Office in London on the 28th and 29th January. The event brings together academics, charity leaders and senior police from across the globe to explore the sharp decline in crime across much of the Western world in the last 20 years and address challenges posed by previously under-reported crimes or new technology. The Police Knowledge Fund will play a key role in developing that understanding. It will be jointly funded

by the Home Office and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), which will administer the Fund. Its scope and aims have been established in partnership with the College of Policing. It is hoped that the police will join forces with experts from academic fields like criminology, economics, neuroscience and computer analytics to better understand why crimes are committed and use that evidence to develop new and innovative ways of policing. Home Secretary Theresa May said:
Page 3 is no more
British tabloid, ‘The Sun’ has scrapped its infamous Page 3 feature which featured topless women, ending a 44-year-old tradition that has been criticized for being sexist, offensive and anachronistic. The decision was hailed by critics who have campaigned against the sexist and offensive images for years. According to insiders, the controversial feature would be removed from the print edition but would continue online. ‘The Times’, which is also owned by Murdoch, had reported that last Friday's edition of the paper would be the last to ‘carry an image of a glamour model with bare breasts on that page’. Instead, the pictures will now show scantily-clad women. In Monday's issue, the model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was shown wearing Marks & Spencer underwear.
“The new Police Knowledge Fund will be critical to increasing knowledge, evidence and expertise on policing and cutting crime. “Police reform is working and crime is down by more than 20 per cent under this government according to the independent Crime Survey for England and Wales. “But we are not complacent and we know that the picture is becoming more complex. We must develop better analysis and evidence on crime trends and drivers and share it so that police forces and others can ensure crime
Russians in British airspace Britain summoned the Russian ambassador on Thursday and asked him to explain why two Russian ‘Bear’ long-range bombers had flown over the English Channel the previous day, a move that forced British authorities to divert civil aircraft. “The Russian planes caused disruption to civil aviation. That is why we summoned the Russian ambassador today to account for the incident,” the foreign office said in a statement. Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the two Russian planes, which were flying close to UK airspace, on Wednesday. The foreign office said the incident was part of an increasing pattern of ‘out of area operations’ by Russian aircraft, noting the planes had stopped short of entering UK airspace.
to discuss emerging challenges in crime and the police response.” The Home Secretary also announced that the Home Office will work with Surrey and Sussex police forces to develop a prototype to allow people to report non-emergency crime online via www.police.uk. This will give victims greater choice over how they report issues to the police and could eventually be made available across England and Wales. It is estimated that online crime reporting could save up to £3.7 million and 180,000 officer hours per year if it is adopted by all forces. The International Crime and Policing Conference 2015 was attended by delegates from the US, Canada and New Zealand including Professor Franklin Zimring from UC Berkeley School of Law, Toronto Chief of Police William Blair and Former Mayor of Christchurch Sir Robert Parker.
UK stars call on PM to help Syrian refugees
Woman detained at UK airport
British police have arrested an 18year old woman at a London airport on suspicion of preparing acts of terrorism and membership of a banned organization, a police statement said. Her arrest on Friday, after she arrived on a flight at Stansted airport, was connected to a prior investigation which had already resulted in the arrest of a 21year-old man in October last year. The woman was taken to a London police station where she remains in custody, the police said. The arrest is the latest in a series carried out by British counter-terrorism officers since the country's threat level was raised in August to its second-highest level because of risks posed by Islamic State fighters returning from Iraq and Syria. Much of Europe is currently on heightened security alert after last week's killings in Paris and raids in Belgium in which two gunmen were killed.

Celebrities from Michael Palin to Sting and Emma Thompson have written an open letter to the Prime Minister criticising his take
A star-studded list of UK celebrities from Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, to musician Sting and television presenter/actor Michael Palin wrote to Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday 26th January, criticising the government for not welcoming more Syrian refugees. A year ago, Britain announced it would accept several hundred of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees as part of a special resettlement programme. But the latest figures show only 90 have arrived so far, according to the Refugee Council, one of the leading charities in Britain working directly with refugees. "In a climate where children are sent to work in order to help their parents survive, where young girls are sold off as child brides and where torture victims are unable to rebuild their lives, every resettlement place (that) countries like Britain provide is a lifeline," the celebrities said in an open letter. "Resettling 'several hundred people' just isn't good enough for a global leader. This issue isn't about migration statistics or party politics, it's about people. It's about the values that we in Britain hold dear; compassion and humanity." Other celebrities who lent their support were actresses Vanessa Redgrave, Juliet Stevenson and Michelle Dockery, artist Grayson Perry, and film directors Ken Loach and Stephen Frears. Television presenters Dan Snow and fashion designers Vivienne Westwood and Bella Freud also signed the letter. The exodus from Syria's nearly fouryear conflict is one of the largest forced migrations of people since World War Two. At least 3.7 million Syrians from a population of about 23 million are registered as refugees, mainly in neighbouring states, which are straining to provide accommodation, food, water and sanitation to the new arrivals. In Lebanon, home to 1.16 million Syrian refugees, one in four residents is a refugee. Turkey hosts a further 1.62 million Syrian refugees, Jordan 622,000 and Iraq 235,600, according to the latest figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The UNHCR, which wants to resettle 130,000 Syrians outside the region by the end of 2016, has
repeatedly urged rich nations to show solidarity with Syria's neighbours and take more refugees. Since 2013, Germany has pledged to take in 30,000 Syrians, Australia 5,600, Sweden 1,200 and Norway 1,000. The Refugee Council's Chief Executive Maurice Wren said Britain's funding to the relief effort was not enough, in a bid to escalate the issue in political debate ahead of a general election in Britain in May. "The question is does David Cameron want to go down in history as the prime minister who rationed his compassion to a few hundred people when there was the opportunity to offer safety to so many more?" he said in a statement. Mark Goldring, the chief executive of Oxfam, has also lobbied for more refugees to be resettled in Britain. "We can no longer continue to treat this problem solely at arms length. For some refugees, life in camps or makeshift shelters is not just hard, it is impossible," he said. The statements come as Syrian refugees endure a particularly severe winter in the Middle East.

MEP swaps UKIP for Conservatives
Britain’s anti-EU UKIP party was dealt a blow last weekend in lead up to this year’s elections, as a senior MEP, and one of the party’s leading ethnic minority members, defected to the Conservative party. Describing the party as ‘amateur’ and ‘lacking policies’, Amjad Bashir announced his decision to join David Cameron’s Tories, moments after being suspended for ‘extremely serious’ offences. Mr Bashir, who won his seat as an MEP for Yorkshire and Humber in May 2014, says the allegations against him during his exit were just an attempt to ‘spoil’ his reputation. “On Friday I met David Cameron and applied to join the Conservative Party,” he told the Telegraph newspaper. “It is clear UKIP's action today is a desperate attempt to spoil this and is without any foundation. “The issues raised in my notice of suspension are historic and well known to the party. Indeed, on one of them, Nigel Farage has publicly defended me over it.” In response, Mr Farage hit back at the comments during an appearance on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show. He said: “Whichever way we look at this, he had reached the end of the road with us, he knew that. “My only surprise, and my

genuine surprise, is that the Conservative Party have accepted him - Caveat emptor (Latin for ‘buyer beware’).” A UKIP spokesman added: “The allegations against Mr Bashir are of a grave nature and we will be forwarding our evidence obtained so far to the police. “UKIP will not tolerate anyone abusing their positions in the party, as we have a firm commitment to differing ourselves from the existing political classes. “As a result, Mr Bashir’s involvement with the party was suspended today with immediate effect pending further investigations.” Such allegations against the now Conservative member, include ‘unanswered financial and employment questions’ as well as ‘interfering’ with candidate selection processes. Since 2006, UKIP has experienced rapid growth, winning Britain's European elections in May before poaching two of Cameron's Conservative lawmakers, making it a real threat in May's national election to all the leading parties. With such rapid growth however it has struggled to maintain discipline and lost several candidates in recent months including one who was recorded making insulting remarks about homosexuals and Chinese people.

Now that’s a cake! MASSIVE: Kanika Kapoor cuts the gigantic cake alongside Asian Express Managing Director Nadim Hanif and Editor-in-Chief Andleeb Hanif
Yorkshire’s biggest photocake served up by Asian Express The Asian Express New Year’s Bash drew in some of the biggest talents from around the world last month yet the ‘sweetest’ surprise of all perhaps came in an even tastier form altogether. A mammoth cream cake, measuring 54inch by 30inch (or 1,620 square inch), was unveiled on the night with the bespoke creation bakedup by Regal food group’s ‘Cake Emporium by Faz’. Taking a day to create, the final production is the biggest photocake the bakers have ever produced and believed to be the largest in Yorkshire. Almost 200 eggs, 11kg of Sugar and 11kg of flour were cooked up with around 5kg of butter – plus some secret ingredients – before the final decorations were put in
place. Faz Ali, speaking on behalf of Regal, said it was certainly a cake which wouldn’t be forgotten. “We don’t get these types of orders very often but we knew we had the skills and expertise here to make something really special,” he said. “We were told that the party needed a cake to stand out and this one certainly did that.” He added: “I have never seen a photocake that big before and it took a whole day to make from planning it all out to the final product.” Officially cut by headlining act, Kanika Kapoor, guests on the night were able to sample the cake during the night, a fitting dessert for the memorable occasion.
RELATIONS: Mr Rashid and Mr Leavor stand together at the Holocaust Memorial Day last week
Bradford’s Synagogue Council took the unprecedented step of appointing a Muslim member onto its ruling body last week as the two religion’s interfaith relationship in the city continues to strengthen. Jani Rashid, a long time supporter of the Synagogue, was approached to join the council by chairman, Rudi Leavor, after his colleagues unanimously passed the decision. Mr Rashid will be involved in helping to secure funding for the last remaining synagogue in Bradford and work closely with fellow council members. Speaking of the appointment, Mr Leavor said he had wanted a Muslim to be formally represented on the board for some time and praised Mr Rashid’s commitment. “The appointment of Jani to our board is certainly the first example I have heard of a Muslim joining a Synagogue Council but our relationship with Jani has been there for a long time,” he said. “It is an important step for our
council to have a Muslim member on the board. It is not just for face-value because Jani merits the position and will bring a lot to the council.” He added: “Relations between Jews and Muslims around the world have been strained recently but this is a good example of our two religions working together here in Bradford.” The relationship between Bradford’s Jewish and Muslim community has grown in recent years, with the latter’s community groups, including the Council for Mosques, helping to fund the restoration of the Bowland Street place of worship in 2013. Mr Rashid, Head of Diversity and Cohesion for Bradford Council’s Department of Children’s Services, has been working in a ‘professional capacity’ with the Synagogue for almost a decade. Within his role on the city’s council, he has regularly taken schoolchildren on tours of the religious building in Manningham and said he was now excited to take up the extra
responsibility. “In a professional capacity I think my relationship with the synagogue began around ten years ago through my work with the diversity and cohesion team,” he said, “but I got involved with the fundraising side of things about four years ago. “In Bradford there is a small and aging Jewish community but the contribution they have made to this city is very considerable with the synagogue at the heart of much of this. It is therefore important that we do what we can to help keep this place of worship funded.” Upon receiving the request to join the council, he added: “It came as somewhat of a surprise but I am delighted to have been approached by the council and will work hard in my position. “This is a great example of how our two communities can live and work together and only indicates how far our relationship has developed in recent years.”

Hoax caller speaks to PM British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Monday security would be reviewed, but no harm had been done, after an apparently drunk hoaxer claiming to be the director of Britain's eavesdropping agency was put though to his mobile phone. Cameron had been walking near his home in central England on Sunday when his BlackBerry phone rang and he was told there would be a conference call with Robert Hannigan, the
head of Government Communications Headquarter, or GCHQ. “A voice came through, a voice I didn't recognise. The voice said he was sorry to wake me up, which I thought was strange as it was 11 o'clock in the morning,” Cameron told reporters. “So I quite rapidly asked 'who is this?' to which the answer came 'it is a hoax call,' and so I pushed the red button on the BlackBerry which ended the call.”

‘Birmingham totally Muslim city’
COMMENTS: Steve Emerson appeared on Fox News on Monday to discuss the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, and caused much controversy with his comments
Twitter erupts after comments from ‘terrorism expert’ People who are ‘non-Muslim’ do not go to the city of Birmingham, according to one US reporter who broadcast his views live on US news channel, Fox News, earlier this week. Steve Emerson, who claims to be a ‘terrorism expert’ and is currently the Executive Director of The Investigative Project on Terrorism, also said that gangs of religious police operate in parts of
London and beat people up who do not wear Islamic clothing. His comments were broadcast around the world as he spoke on the subject of terrorism following the recent Paris murders. He said: “In Britain, it’s not just no-go zones, there are actual cities like Birmingham that are totally Muslim where non-Muslims just simply don’t go in. “And, in parts of London, there
are actually Muslim religious police that actually beat and actually wound seriously anyone who doesn’t dress according to religious Muslim attire.” Despite apologising for his comments shortly after, Mr Emerson’s remarks helped launch the hashtag #FoxNewsFacts which became the number one trend in the world. Twitter users utilised the hashtag in their tweets to joke about other ‘facts’ surrounding Birmingham. ‘I was supposed to go to Birmingham last week but I forgot my passport #foxnewsfacts’ one profile wrote, whilst another added, ‘For Heaven’s sake, nobody tell Fox News about the Black Country #foxnewsfacts’. Mr Emerson issued a full apology for his comments and said he would be making a donation to a charity in the city. “I have clearly made a terrible error for which I am deeply sorry,” he said. “My comments about Birmingham were totally in error. And I am issuing an apology and correction on my website immediately for having made this comment about the beautiful city of Birmingham. “I do not intend to justify or mitigate my mistake by stating that I had relied on other sources because I should have been much more careful. “There was no excuse for making this mistake and I owe an apology to every resident of Birmingham. I am not going to make any excuses. I made an inexcusable error. And I am obligated to openly acknowledge that mistake. “I intend to make a donation to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.”

Working off a simple brief - to create a white shirt that contains a two-piece collar, pockets, plackets, a yoke, sleeves, cuffs and tucks – the designers were then given creative freedom to put their own ‘personality’ and ‘spin’ on the shirt. Sehar, who hopes to work with a design house in the future, and eventually run her own fashion label, explained more about her own final product. “My design consisted of two layers, an undergarment which was a fitted bodice, and a top layer which was loose fitting - a Two-p twopiece,” she said. “The batwing style sleeves have been left open at the armhole and
are closed at the cuffs. “I chose to have a normal button stand for the undergarment and a concealed placket for the top layer in order to give the shirt a simple finish to go with the batwing sleeves.” The promising designer said she had thoroughly enjoyed her time on the course so far and praised the university for its ‘industry experience’. “The best thing about the course is that it covers various aspects of fashion, including hand designing, pattern cutting, construction and computer aided design,” she added. “What’s more, the tutors have firsthand industry experience.” Course Leader, Katie Lenton, has overseen the exhibition and explained more of what visitors can expect when attending the show. She said: “The exhibition is a reflection of the creativity and individuality of our students, who have all fully embraced the concept of the project. “They have each designed and produced an original white shirt, all of which have been finished to an industry standard and everyone is welcome to celebrate with us at the special exhibition.” The Ba (Hons) Fashion course was launched at Leeds Beckett University in September 2014.

Britain ‘needs to do more’
ACTION: Defence Committee chairman, Rory Stewart, has said more needs to be done by Britain in the fight against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq
Fight against IS requires greater contribution from Britain British lawmakers have this week said that the fight against the Islamic State (IS) may be one which aims to contain the threat, rather than defeat it, calling on Britain to play a greater role in the conflicts in Syria and Iraq. Britain has yet to take part in any air strikes in Syria, only joining the US-led strikes against IS groups in Iraq – something the parliament defence committee has described as ‘strikingly modest’. In a report released last week, the committee said: “There is a significant gap between the rhetoric of Britain and its partners, and the reality of the campaign on the ground ... It will be very difficult to destroy DAESH. “Given the deep polarisation and structural weaknesses of the Iraqi state, we wonder whether containment and suppression of DAESH would not be a more realistic goal than total elimination.” DAESH is a separate acronym for the IS group which is thought to have been derived as an acronym of the terrorists original Arabic name. It is also conceived to have many negative undertones and to be disliked by the militants. DAESH, or IS, is a breakaway al Qaeda group that declared an Islamic caliphate across parts of Syria and Iraq last summer so far killing thousands in what the United Nations has called a reign of terror. Britain’s defence committee added this week that they were ‘deeply concerned’ about the lack of action taken against the group. The Iraqi security forces were described as ‘weak’ and ‘lacking resources’ in the report, with the nation’s communities divided and regional powers still highly suspicious of each other. The committee said that it was not calling for combat troops to be deployed, a move the government has already ruled out, but said Britain should meet a request from the Iraqi army to provide training to counter Improvised Explosive Devices and also help with mission planning and tactics. It also criticised ministers and military chiefs for failing to provide a clear idea of Britain's objectives or strategy in Iraq and called on the government to ‘radically’ increase its defence and diplomatic engagement with regional powers such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Committee chairman, Rory Stewart, a lawmaker from Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative Party, said: “We must clearly acknowledge the previous failures in Iraq, and reform our approach. But that does not mean lurching to doing nothing. “There are dozens of things the UK could be doing ... to work with coalition partners to help address one of the most extreme threats that we have faced in the last twenty years.”

Mother-to-be fraudster finally jailed
CAPTURED: Agne Khan had been on the run for five years before she was finally detained following a major fraud project
A pregnant woman who was part of a criminal gang that defrauded high street banks out of almost £8 million and then spent five years on the run has finally been jailed. Agne Khan, from Birmingham, was sentenced to 30 months in prison at Southwark Crown Court for her role in a major mortgage fraud, uncovered by the City of London Police back in 2009. The other five members of the gang – Mohammed Younas, brothers Imran and Nadeem Mirza, Farhan Khan and Khawar Khan - were jailed in 2010 and 2012 but the 30 year-old female fraudster avoided detection until being arrested at Birmingham Airport in September 2014, having just got off a flight from Lithuania.
A couple of months later she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess false identity documents, conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and conspiracy to possess articles for use in fraud. Agne Khan, who is married to Khawar Khan and is due to give birth in a couple of months, was a key player in the criminal network that stole £7.8 million from banks over a six month period in 2008. Fraudulent solicitors were used to submit 33 bogus mortgage applications on properties across South East England that the gang did not own and had no intention of buying. After approving the applications the mortgage funds were transferred by the lenders into a single bank account controlled by the criminal gang, who then swiftly moved the millions into 68 separate accounts they had opened using false identities. In March 2009 one of the banks contacted the City of London Police, which is the National Policing Lead for Fraud, and a few
months later detectives moved in and arrested all of the gang apart from Agne Khan, who escaped detection and fled the country. A European Arrest Warrant was put out in her name which was still outstanding when she tried to reenter the UK last autumn. Khan was then detained at the airport before being arrested, charged and held in custody. City of London Police Detective Sergeant Simon Russen, who led the long running investigation, said: “After five years on the run Agne Khan may have thought the City of London Police had long forgotten about her. Unfortunately for her we never close the file on a case until we are certain we have done all we can to ensure justice has been served in full". “She is now the sixth and final member of this gang who has been put behind bars as a result of what was a highly complex investigation into a type of scam that was particularly prevalent in the first decade of the 21st century.”
Anti-Semitic attacks reach record high
The number of anti-Semitic incidents in Britain rose to a record level in 2014, more than double the previous year, due to events in the Middle East involving Israel, a Jewish advisory body said on Thursday. The figures, which Home Secretary (interior minister) Theresa May called ‘deeply concerning’, come amid rising safety fears among Britain's estimated 260,000 Jews following the deadly attack on a Jewish supermarket in Paris by an Islamist gunman last month. The Community Security Trust, which provides security advice to Britain's Jews, said there had been 1,168 anti-Semitic incidents last year, a 25 percent increase on the previous record high recorded in 2009. The CST, which began monitoring anti-Semitic incidents in 1984, said the major reason for the rise was fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinians in Gaza which began in July, and led to a record monthly figure. For most people, an inclusion on the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List would be considered a once in a lifetime opportunity but for one Bradford resident, her second entry is just as special as her first. Adeeba Malik, deputy chiefexecutive of charity QED-UK, was named on 2015’s prestigious list for her services as a British muslim woman on mainstream public bodies. Having already been awarded an MBE for her work in June 2004, Mrs Malik will now receive a CBE for her continued contribution to the sector. Speaking of her latest recognition, she said: “When I learnt of the news I was in shock. “I remember first seeing this official-looking letter, which had arrived in the post, with the words ‘Cabinet Office’, ‘Urgent’ and ‘Personal’ written on it in big letters. “I knew it was something very important and once I began reading it, I thought I may be getting the honour of an OBE. “However, after reading down the first couple of paragraphs I saw that I had been put forward for a CBE which is an amazing honour.” QED works with mainstream organisations and ethnic minority communities to help address the root causes of poverty and disadvantage. Mrs Malik has been in her role since 1992, whilst also chairing the Department for Trade Industry’s national Ethnic Minority Business Forum and acting as a member of the Women and Work Commission and Home Office’s Advisory Board on Naturalisation and Integration. She added: “It is fantastic to get

For the past 23 years I have been working with some very supportive people at QED and have to thank them and all my friends and family for their help. “I am particularly happy to have received the award for my mother who has been the biggest influence in my life.” Meanwhile another award recipient on this year’s list was headteacher, Mr Gulfraz Ahmed, who will receive an OBE for his
services to education. Mr Ahmed has been in charge at Parkinson Lane Primary School, in Halifax, for the past 15 years. During his time, he has helped oversee the school’s transformation from being in the lowest one percentile in the country for value added, into the top five per cent nationally. On top of this, the school has also gone from being placed in special measures by Ofsted in the year 2000 to becoming an ‘Outstanding’
establishment in all areas for the past eight years. Despite such success, Mr Ahmed said the award still came as a big surprise and praised the efforts of his fellow staff for his individual accolade. “When I got told I was to receive the award it was a surprise but I was thrilled to bits,” he said. “This achievement is very much down to the hard work our fantastic teaching staff put into all the work they do here.
“We try to stay at the forefront of education and the cutting edge of latest initiatives. “Some of the projects being discussed or introduced now across schools nationwide have been practiced for the past couple of years here.” Dozens of representatives on this year’s Honours List were from the South Asian community with recipients awarded for their dedicated service to their sector.

Death threats sent after magazine attack
London Mosque targeted with hate mail
January 2015 - Edition
PARIS ATTACK: Growing debate among Muslims and freedom of speech
WORSHIP: Finsbury Park Mosque, in North London, has recieved some 15 Islamophobic emails and letters since the Charlie Hebdo attacks
A general secretary at a London Mosque, which had previous strong links with extremist preacher, Abu Hamza, has said the place of worship has received Islamophobic email and letters since the Paris attack. Mohammed Kozar, from the Finsbury Park Mosque, said around 15 messages of hate have been received despite much support from the community. Amongst the letters were hand drawn images depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a devil worshipper, as well as death threats to members of the mosque. “Most of them are nasty drawings about our prophet and our books,” Mr Kozar said. “Some of them make death threats against our community, so it's quite frightening for our community and our mosque.” The Finsbury Park Mosque gained notoriety in the past for its involvement with radical preachers, yet over the past decade, has reformed itself into a place for interfaith and peaceful worship. Nonetheless, one former attendee, Djamel Beghal, is believed to have mentored two of the three gunmen involved in the Charlie Hebdo attack. Amedy Coulibaly and Cherif Kouachi are both believed to have been in contact with the previous member, and Mr Kozar adds that it is frustrating for his mosque to be associated with past extremists. “It makes me feel very upset and very angry,” he
said. “People should realise that changes have taken place here from 2005 until now and the community feels it's not fair to always link the mosque in such a negative way to what's happening elsewhere. “It's not fair for them after the work they've done here; changing it from a hostile atmosphere to a cohesive atmosphere. “I can't deny or confirm whether this person (Djamel Beghal) had links to the mosque before 2005 but I can confirm it never happened whilst we were here.” Fiyaz Mughal, director of Islamophobia watchdog Tell MAMA, said it wasn’t only the Finsbury Park Mosque which had received Islamophobic attacks, with a rise in such events seen nationally. “There is a vast amount of online hate around but we've also had streetbased incidents reported to us, particularly from mosques,” he said. “We're also having members of the public particularly visible Muslim women - who are unfortunately coming back to us saying people are saying things to them again around the Charlie Hebdo affair; saying things like 'I'm Charlie you are not.' “We've received information from umbrella bodies that work with Muslim charities. They have sent us information around leaflets that have been sent and, again, hate mail that has been sent to Muslim charities. “So faith institutions as well as Muslim charities are the ones receiving some form of hate mail at the time.”
In the wake of the terrorist attack, where gunmen in Paris killed 12 people, many Muslim clerics across the globe quickly condemned the actions, saying there was no acceptable justification for the killings. It was a signal from some of the Islamic world's strictest voices that cartoons lampooning the Prophet Muhammad in the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo were not a reason to kill the artists. On Sunday 11th January, hundreds of thousands of people including a number of world leaders such as Angela Merkel, Benjamin Netanyahu, and David Cameron gathered in Paris for a unity rally, to stand in mourning, in defiance. These declarations were a display of solidarity with those who lost their lives and those who survived. Western critics are becoming increasingly brazen about suggesting there is something inherent in Islam that is sparking violence by some of its adherents. Most
Muslims reject this, arguing that the conflicts in the Middle East have created fertile ground for fuelling anger and discontent on foreign policies of the Western world. What has become rather alarming to see are the relentless calls for the Muslim communities across the world to denounce terrorism carried out by radicalised individuals and groups. Where Muslims are making gestures of solidarity via social networks, they can share the frustration, fear and devastation of acts of terror, but in reality most are not able to do much more. They don’t feel competent enough to feign expertise in a matter they know little of. The dilemma now is how to engage in the growing debate within Islam on how to reject the radicalised minority that most Muslims fear are dragging them into conflict and wrecking the faith. The attack on Charlie Hebdo prompted the West contending that Islam fuels violence, but hundreds of thousands of Muslims say they are tired of apologising for an extremist fringe which is distorting the view of their religion. Despite the sadness and

immense sense of grief for those who have lost their loved ones through acts of terrorism, one can't help but to sit back and reflect upon the situation. Charles Hebdo, for years, intentionally and repeatedly made a mockery of religion and ridiculed Muslims openly saying that Prophet Muhammed meant nothing to him and that he had the right to exercise his ‘freedom of speech’. Where calls to defend the right to practice freedom of speech, Andleeb Hanif – Managing Editor of Asian Express says: “Self-restaint applies to every law of the universe” and that “there are limits and boundaries for everything. “Firstly, there is no justification for the grotesque murders which took place in Paris. Islam is not that weak to be brought down by cartoons and caricatures. "Where I agree to freedom of speech and expression, as with everything in life - that too I believe, comes with responsibility and moderation. Freedom of speech is an infinite void, which may inevitably lead to being offensive, but there's a huge difference between that and having a purposeful campaign
to repeatedly offend. “When we are now globally aware that using religious slurs such as ‘hebe’ or ‘yid’ (Jewish people) or ethnic slurs such as ‘golliwogg’ and ‘n*gger’ (black people) is hideously offensive and socially unacceptable, why would someone maintain that it’s their right to use it? For the sake of having their freedom of speech? “The next issue of Charlie Hebdo’s satirical magazine is set to publish, yet again, another cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad this week. “My question to this is – in the light of the recent Paris attack, the world has yet again become aware of how offensive it is to Muslims (in general) to depict an image of the Prophet Muhammad – then why continue to do so? “We wouldn’t continue to, nor is there any excuse to use the words n*gger and hibe now that we are so acutely aware of how repugnant these terms are to the people, so why continue to insult Muslims by continuing to do something that has so publically been denounced? "What kind of freedom of speech is this? The literate world (it seems to me) has just proven how illiterate it can be.”

Remembering victims of honour-based violence Memorial Day
established to pay tribute to victims worldwide
TRIBUTE: Shafilea Ahmed was killed by her parents in 2003 when she was just 17-years-old after suffering years of abuse. Her birthday will mark the official memorial day for victims of honour-based violence
The birthday of a Bradford teenager, murdered after suffering years of honour-based violence, will be marked this year with the first ever memorial day which remembers victims of honour killings. Shafilea Ahmed was suffocated to death by her parents in 2003 when she was 17-years-old, after being abused for a long duration of her life and a failed forced marriage attempt. UK charity, Karma Nirvana, which supports honour crimes and forced marriages, worked with Cosmopolitan magazine, to arrange the day of remembrance to fall on Shafilea’s birthday – 14th July.
An estimated 5,000 women internationally are killed each year for bringing ‘shame’ upon their families with at least 12 of these victims being British – Many believe the true number is thought to be far higher, as many simply ‘disappear’. Karma Nirvana and Cosmopolitan launched an online petition via Change.org in May 2014 urging everyone to pledge their support for an annual memorial day. Over 115,000 signatures were secured together with the support of the three main political parties. In July last year, as part of the campaign, a poignant image was also beamed onto the Royal Opera House to coincide with David Cameron’s Girl Summit to raise awareness of the cruelty that is still happening in Britain today. Jasvinder Sanghera CBE, a survivor of forced marriage and founder and Chief Executive of Karma Nirvana, hopes the memorial day will encourage victims of honour-based violence to speak out. “Girls and women can be murdered for the most basic freedoms – the right to education, independence or wanting to choose their partner,” she said. “A day of memory will honour these women and dishonour the crime. It will also raise awareness so anyone can spot this abuse and potentially save someone’s life.” The day was also highly commended by political leaders in the UK, with Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, voicing his support. “Cosmo and Karma Nirvana

deserve huge credit for shining a light on this issue to help give people on the frontline, from teachers to healthcare workers, the confidence to speak out where they suspect abuse is happening and give these women a voice,” Mr Clegg said. “By remembering past victims, we can show them that they are not alone, giving them vital support to regain control of their lives.” Theresa May, Home Secretary, added: “Forced marriage and honour-based violence are deplorable forms of abuse with victims’ lives destroyed by the very people they should be able to love and trust. “I commend Karma Nirvana and Cosmopolitan’s campaign to raise awareness of these often hidden crimes through a remembrance day for victims and thank them for their ongoing work to tackle forced marriage and honour based violence.”

A report identified that female asylum seekers detained in the Yarl’s Wood immigration detention centre are routinely humiliated by male staff who monitor them while they are dressing, showering and using the toilet, or are naked in their rooms. Women for Refugee Women (WRW) interviewed 38 women who were recently or currently detained at Yarl's Wood - the Bedfordshire detention centre that houses women and family's who are awaiting immigration clearance. The report also identifies that these women have been victims of sexual violence in their home countries. Nineteen of the women interviewed said they had been raped, and 28 women in total indicated they had experienced forced marriage, forced prostitution, female genital mutilation or some other form of sexual violence before coming to the UK. The report also found high levels of depression among detainees, with 19 of the 38 interviewed saying they had been put on suicide watch for all or part of their time at the centre. The study also raises concerns at the use of solitary confinement. The report follows earlier research into sexual assaults by staff on detainees in Yarl’s Wood. In June 2014, the centre’s management said 31 allegations of sexual contact had been investigated and a number of staff were dismissed. Serco, the outsourcing firm that runs Yarl’s Wood under contract to the Home Office, had its contract renewed last November to run the centre for another eight years. In a statement, Serco said the allegations were “uncorroborated”. Norman Abusin, Serco’s contract director at Yarl’s Wood, said: “We take all complaints seriously and we have strict procedures for dealing with

Female detainees at immigration detention centre routinely humiliated by male staff them. They are always fully investigated and, if appropriate, disciplinary action is taken.” The decision to detain women who have been trafficked, tortured or suffered sexual abuse has already caused controversy and Labour has promised to prohibit the detention of pregnant women and women who have experienced torture or sexual abuse if it wins the election. Researchers focused on the problem of male staff intimidating detainees, by routinely invading their privacy. “Almost all (of the women interviewed) said men watched them in intimate situations, such as while naked, partly dressed in the shower or on the toilet,” the report says. “Of the 38 women, 33 said they experienced men seeing them in these situations. Of the 33, 13 said men saw them naked, 29 said men saw them partially dressed, 29 said men saw them in bed, 16 said men saw them in the shower and 14 said men saw them using the toilet.” Serco guidelines say staff should not enter detainees’ rooms for searches without knocking. The women said such searches made them scared, uncomfortable, angry and ashamed. Detainees also reported high levels of bullying, with 29 saying they felt they had been bullied and 25 saying a member of staff had been racist. “They always come in without knocking… even if you are in the shower or toilet,” one woman
said. “Men enter your room without knocking and see you in bed every day. I have been seen partly naked more than once,” another detainee said. “One day I was in the bathroom taking a shower, they asked me to come out. I was naked,” another told researchers. A fourth woman said: “Because of sexual abuse, I used to feel very uncomfortable with male officers in my room when I was in bed. I felt very vulnerable. They said they don’t have to give you warning. They all enter and search.” Detainees report requesting that female staff should carry out searches, and being told this was not possible. The Home Office said the latest independent inspection by Her Majesty’s chief inspector of prisons found Yarl’s Wood to be a respectful and safe place. A spokesman said: “Detention and removal are essential elements of an effective immigration system. We are committed to treating all detainees with dignity and respect, and take any allegations to the contrary very seriously. “We have invited Women for Refugee Women to supply details of the cases in question so that they can be investigated fully.” Asylum seekers can be detained at any point in the asylum process if they are deemed “likely to abscond”, or if they have been refused asylum and
their removal from the UK is imminent. In 2013, 2,038 women were detained after seeking asylum in the UK; 43% of them were held for more than a month. Asylum seekers are often unaware of the reasons for their detention and most women interviewed found the arrest process traumatising. Fourteen of the women interviewed in the report said there were more than five members of staff involved in their arrest, and one said there were more than 10. Natasha Walter, director of Women for Refugee Women, said: “Survivors of sexual violence who come to the UK seeking protection are routinely being locked up and are denied privacy and dignity in detention. “The behaviour of staff, particularly male staff, in Yarl’s Wood detention centre is adding to the trauma of survivors of sexual violence. “Detention has no place in the asylum process. It is expensive, unjust and inefficient to lock up people who have come here to seek asylum. “Women who seek protection in the UK should be able to live in the community while their claims are considered.” During 2013, the Home Office detained 2,038 women who had come to the UK seeking asylum at detention centres like Yarl's Wood, the WRW report says. 43 per cent were held for more than a month.

An international manhunt continues after a 28-year-old woman was found dead in a hotel room. The body of Nadine Aburas, was discovered by staff at the Future Inn hotel in Cardiff on New Year's Eve. South Wales Police say they are treating the death as murder and want to trace suspect Sammy Almahri, an American national from New York City. Almahri, 44, who has distinctive injuries to his face, had an ‘existing friendship’ with Ms Aburas and is now believed to be in Tanzania, the force said. CCTV footage shows the suspect checked into the Future Inn hotel in Cardiff Bay on 30th December before Ms Aburas arrived at around 9pm that evening. He then left the building at about 3am on New Year's Eve and took a flight from Heathrow to Bahrain at 10.30am. Detective Superintendent Paul Hurley said Almahri is considered ‘dangerous’ and ‘very resourceful’ as he appealed for the public's help to find him. He said: "The hotel was busy with people who were in the city to

"We are supporting Nadine's family with specially trained officers and they have paid the following tribute to her - but at this stage would now like to be left to grieve privately." A post-mortem examination has been completed but a cause of death has not yet been confirmed. Ms Aburas's family paid tribute to her as a "lovely, bubbly girl and unique and talented woman". In a statement, they said: "She always wanted to help people and everybody loved her. She has left such a massive hole in our family and we will miss her so much. The family respectfully request that they be left to grieve privately." Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

CONTROVERSY: AIB’s now infamous roast has been removed from their YouTube channel raising a dispute over freedom of speech in India
Petition gathers over 30,000 signatures following controversial roast
Regular disputes and arguments in the world of Bollywood are often based around ‘trivial’ things, such as relationships, clothes and advertising deals. Yet when a team of comedians, roasting the entertainment elite had a police complaint registered against them, the very real, and very important topic of ‘freedom of speech’ cropped up in unfamiliar territory. It was in December that the comedian group, known as All India Backchod (or AIB), staged their roast, with the main participants of Ranveer Singh, Karan Johar and Arjun Kapoor. Organised with their permission, the fourpiece comic group then began their controversial act. Despite many plaudits, there were also a number of critics who complained of the language used in the jokes and some of the material. Two of those angered, perhaps a little more than the rest, were Maharashtra's Minister of Cultural Affairs, Vinod Tawde and the President of Brahman Ekta Seva Sanstha, Akhilesh Tiwari – the two people actually trying to get criminal charges against AIB for using ‘vulgar’ language. Tiwari has even gone on record saying: “[The group’s language was] extremely abusive and it is not only ruining the clean image of the Indian culture and women, but is also misleading today's youth.” Thankfully, it seems the majority don’t agree with the two politicians, despite the video now being removed from YouTube. A petition has been launched online, with more than 30,000 signatures gathered in less than three days, in defence of the group. Anushka Sharma was one of the celebrities who were comically targeted by the group, and she said she took it in good humour - the same response she would expect from the majority of others. Speaking at a press conference for her upcoming film, NH10, she said: “Everyone has his or her own way of looking at things and how I looked at it, I felt it was in good humour. It was not meant to be taken so seriously. “This is my opinion. Someone else can have a different opinion and that's the beauty of a democratic setup.” Anushka added that there were more important things happening in India that required the attention of the media, something I’m sure we can all agree with!

The Action/2015 campaign, which was announced by education champion and Nobel Peace Prize 2014 winner Malala Yousafzai, is a growing movement of more than a thousand organisations in over 120 countries, which is urging political leaders to honour the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The campaign is billed as one of the biggest global outreach initiatives in history to address world-changing issues of climate change, poverty and inequality, which saw a massive outpouring of solidarity. Celebrities such as actor Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor, Malaika Arora-Khan, Pulkit Samrat, Kiara Advani, Mohit Marwah, Arfi Lamba author Chetan Bhagat, producers Ashvini Yardi (Grazing Goat Pictures) and Ritesh Sidhwani (Excel Entertainment), TV personalities Gautam Rode, sport stars Yuvraj Singh and Vijendra Singh are some of the growing list of supporters. The initiative garnered further support on the 15th of January

2015, when an open letter, signed by such renowned activists as Indian actor Aamir Khan, was sent to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage further action by India to address such critical issues as poverty, climate change and equality. Other major names to sign the open letter include Queen Rania Al Abdullah, U2 frontman Bono, Hollywood actors Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Hugh Jackman, philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates, UK-Sudanese entrepreneur Mo Ibrahim, singer Shakira. The campaign issues a stark warning; that while leaders have a historic chance in 2015 to make progress on some of the greatest challenges of our time at two critically important summits, currently too few leaders are playing the leadership roles needed. They set out their fear that if this does not change, leaders could be “sleepwalking the world towards one of the greatest failures of recent history.” India, although a country emerging as a powerful and revolutionary force on the world stage, still worryingly accounts for one-third of the world’s poor.

Soaring high Film inspired by the true story of world’s first unmanned airplane
Forthcoming big-screen release ‘Hawaizaada’ is set to inspire a new generation of filmgoers in a tale of unwavering daring, ingenuity and glory. Releasing internationally in cinemas on 30th January, ‘Hawaizaada’ celebrates the Indian spirit of adventure and invention as well as the country’s prolific freedom struggle, as it unfolds the story of one man’s dreams and aspirations amidst considerable adversity. Directed by Vibhu Puri, the film features an ensemble cast of emerging and established actors, who all showcase their considerable talents in this thought-provoking and inspiring story. Playing the lead role of Shivkar Bapuji Talpade is multi-talented actor, musician and presenter Ayushmann Khurrana who is joined by rising star Pallavi Sharda who essays the role of Sitara. The star line-up is completed by
veteran award-winning actor Mithun Chakraborthy. The film tells the story of young school drop-out ‘Shivi’ (Ayushmann Khurrana), who falls in love with popular rich girl Sitara (Pallavi Sharda). But their turbulent and tempestuous relationship does not run smoothly and Sitara decides to leave the city to spare Shivi any further pain. The heartbroken and dejected Shivi slips into a constant drunken stupor in a world filled with debauchery and sinfulness. However, His life is dramatically changed when he meets ‘Shastry’, (Mithun Chakraborthy), a Vedic scholar, who inspires him to change his shallow, unfulfilled life. Shastry shares his life-long dream of making an airplane based on the principles of the Hindu religious texts, the
Vedas. Hence begins the two men’s poignant, courageous and exciting journey, one a whimsical genius and the other a witty, crazy dreamer. However, the course of life and love never runs smoothly, as Shivi finds himself the perpetrator of the ultimate betrayal against his good friend Shastry. Will Shivi be able to redeem himself after his unthinkable actions and will he and his true love Sitara reunite and realise the life-long dream of his friend and mentor? Pallavi Sharda – Lead Actress Q: Tell us something about your role in Hawaizaada. A: I play a ‘Tamasha’ dancer in the movie. I think my character has come up very well. All thanks to our director Vibhu Puri & my co-star Ayushmann Khurrana who encouraged me to give my best to the film. I won’t like to give away much detail on my role at this moment, I just want all my fans to go watch me in a completely different role. I got another chance to show that I can play these kinds of roles too. I believe I'm a versatile actress and hope that people would love my work. Q: How has your experience been in the film industry considering you come from a non-film background? A: Yes, I come from a non-film background and to survive in the film industry, one needs talent as well as luck. Of course in an industry like this, acting and talent is the
most important. But luck is an important factor too - I certainly believe that you can’t be successful without talent, but even if you’re talented and luck doesn’t favour you, you’re still not going to get where you want. Q: How was your experience working with Ayushmann Khurrana? A: Director Vibhu Puri wanted us to attend workshops so we could get under the skin of our respective characters. We built a good rapport, and as we are both fairly new in the industry we would end up discussing a lot of our scenes and bounce ideas and opinions off each other. Ayushmann as a co-star is easy to work with and is quite a natural actor. Q: If you could portray any character who would it be? A: It would have to be Madhubala.
Ayushmann Khurrana
I would love to do a biopic on the legendary actress who was recognized all over for her timeless acting and beauty. I like her story, her life was interesting and there is romanticism in her life. I think it would make for an interesting story. Her films like ‘Mughal-E-Azam’, ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’, ‘Barsaat ki Raat’ or ‘Kaala Paani’ have immortalised Bollywood and I have watched all of her films countless times. In fact, I’m a trained classical dancer and often during my rehearsals I used to watch Madhubala’s songs and try to emulate her moves and expressions. Q: How was your experience working with Mithun Chakraborty? A: I consider it an honour to work with someone like him. Mithun Sir is a legend that everyone has idolised and watched growing up. Whether it’s his disco dance moves, dialogue delivery or on-screen presence, he has the spark that will never leave him. It’s so inspiring to watch him or just be around him, honestly. I was so nervous when I met him for the
– Lead Actor
Q. So what’s ‘Hawaizaada’ about? A: It’s about the flight of the first unmanned airplane in India in 1895. When I learnt more about the character and the story of the event, I found that this was before even the Wright brothers in America, which I find incredible. India had a real role to play in the history of aviation and I think it’s great we’ve got this chance to show that to the world. Q. And your character? A: I play Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, who designed the plane. He was a fascinating character both as a historical figure in India’s history but also as a human being. Vibhu Puri (director) offered me this amazing story of an unsung hero. The way he has fictionalised it, the way he has taken the creative liberty and added his own flavour to the story of a guy who made the
world’s first aircraft is incredible.” Q. We heard that you weren’t paid for this film, is this true? A: Yes, it’s true. To be honest, I didn’t look to do this film for the money. The film was having some trouble with budgets and I knew I didn’t want to charge for my services because it was worth it! There are some films you do to satisfy your soul, not your stomach. Q: Hawaizaada took one-and-ahalf years to make. What made it take so long? A: There were some complications regarding budgets, which did delay the filming. Unfortunately some things are out of your control so you have to just get on with it. But delays aside, this film took a long time to make because it was worth it. A lot of

first time on the sets of ‘Hawaizaada’, but he was very humble and easy-going. He is absolutely amazing to work with and I learnt so much just by observing him. His experience shows in every frame as he’s that effortless. He has amazing energy and his enthusiasm of an 18-year old just rubs off on anyone who is around you. Q: What was the biggest challenge you faced during the film? A: I think personally it would have to be playing the character of a Marathi girl. I had to undergo special training to learn the various nuances of Marathi as a language, its culture as well as dancing since I play a dancer in the film. I have always loved dancing and performing different styles is every dancer’s dream. Vibhu Puri also asked me to closely observe Maharashtrian mannerisms and do my own research on things that would help me get under the skin of the character. Looking back, it all seems quite amazing how much I
films get churned out but this film needed to have time taken over it. Vibhu insisted that we get it right even if it took a dozen takes but if that’s what it takes to make a great film, that’s the price you’ve got to pay. He’s got a real eye for detail and despite the cast groaning about doing a certain shot over and over again, in the end you’ve got a great scene. Q: What was it like working with Vibhu Puri? A: I didn’t know too much about him other than what friends had said about him. With them though, he had a great reputation despite being very new on the scene. I think this was his first full-length film. He’s young, but he works like a seasoned pro. He’s like all directors should be, to the point and knows how to talk to his cast. Vibhu had a very clear vision of how he wanted the film to go and he did as much as he could to make that happen. He was keen on hearing other people’s point of

view, which I like. Sometimes an actor would suggest a way a certain shot was taken and he’d say ‘Actually, that’s better!’ Q: You’ve said before that this film has touched you. Would you like to explain why? A: There were several reasons. When you spent 18 months on anything, it’s always going to be of significance to you. In the future, when I look back, I’ll think of the time I spent with this team and on ‘Hawaizaada’. I also found the storyline fascinating. It was a story that I had to fully research to get under this man’s skin and be him. When you become a real life person, it’s very different to playing a fictional one, there’s something to base your character on. With films you get out of them what you put in. I put my heart and soul into this film because I truly cared about it. When you care that much about a film, it’s always going to have a huge effect on you.

That is how this song is different to what I’ve been producing for the last two years or so. With Kaash, you can just sit back and listen. It is the perfect song for this winter weather.
Can we expect a new album to come out anytime soon? At the moment, Kaash is just a single and I plan on releasing a few more tracks before we do anything with an album. I already have a number of singles ready and they will be released soon, with the next one due in a couple of months. At the moment, I want to drop a song and then as soon as that one starts moving

Does it give your singles more chance to be heard by releasing them separately? Definitely. I think what happens is that whenever someone drops an album, it doesn’t matter if you have ten really good songs, people are always going to pick the first one and listen to that one the most. That is the one that has been promoted and that is the one with a video. By releasing singles separately, it gives each track more time and more exposure which is only a good thing.

The good, the bad, and the not so ugly Whether you’ve been watching the latest ‘real-life’ drama series to hit TV screens or not, the odds are you’ve heard of Sky Living’s newest show - ‘Desi Rascals’. Airing every Friday night, the series follows the lives of a multiFITNESS: Owais Khan overcame a stutter in his youth before entering the luxurious world of modelling, and now, at 35, says he is ready to settle down when he finds ‘the one’
generational cast, within the BritishAsian community, who live in the affluent area of West London. Much like TOWIE and Made in Chelsea before it, the series tells the stories of a modern, dynamic and
aspirational group of characters across a range of ages as they navigate their social, professional and family lives in a fast changing community. From award-winning director, Gurinder Chadha, (Bend it Like Beckham) and creator of TOWIE, Tony Wood, the series was shot just days before transmission and is one of the most active shows on social media on a weekly basis. However, as with any programme, it all depends on whether this reaction is positive or negative, and thankfully for this series, it seems the majority of critics approve. Whether it is single-parent Amita who audiences relate to, the loveable Anita and Jay Vara, perhaps Owais
Khan or Yasmin Karimi, whichever one it is, the formula seems to be working. Of course, as with any programme there are also the ‘not-so keen’. The real-life drama concept still fails to win many critics over with seemingly staged story lines, despite assurances from the creator’s that every scene is ‘absolutely real’. Gurinder Chadha says he has loved making the show and explained why he was so passionate about releasing it to the British public. He said: “Desi Rascals is a fantastic show about British-Asians living in West London. It’s unscripted, so different to what I normally do.
“I haven’t written these characters - in Desi Rascals we have real people who have brilliant spontaneous exchanges that I could never write. “What Desi Rascals offers is a massive burst of energy, storytelling and characters that would take me years to put together if I was making a movie. “The most important thing when we were casting was that it had to be authentic, real people who are going through real issues that affect our community, and I also wanted to show the fun elements of our community.” With romance, gossip, laughs and a whole host of good looking folks, Desi Rascals could well be the real life Asian TOWIE.

he Court have for the first time ruled that a parent company owes a duty of care to its subsidiary employees. In legal terms, a company is a separate legal entity, separate from its shareholders and directors, with a legal personality capable of having legal rights and duties and is able to sue, and be sued. When there is a group of companies a subsidiary is a distinct legal entity separate from its parent company. Therefore neither the parent company nor its directors can usually be held liable for the acts of its subsidiaries. The principle of a separate legal entity can be overlooked in circumstances such as in fraud or cases of illegality, which is known as ‘lifting the corporate veil’. The corporate veil was arguably lifted to hold a parent company liable for the health and safety of its subsidiary employees in the case of Chandler –vCape plc . The Claimant, Mr David Chandler, was exposed to substantial amounts of asbestos dust during his employment with Cape Building Products Limited (“CBPL”). Fifty years later Mr Chandler was diagnosed with asbestosis and brought a claim for negligence against the parent company Cape plc. Mr Chandler did not bring a claim against CBPL as their insurance policy excluded claims of this type. The Court of Appeal found that Cape plc had superior knowledge to CBPL about the health risks and management of asbestos and they were also “fully aware of the systemic failure to control the release of asbestos at CBPL”. Cape plc ought to have foreseen that CBPL
would rely on its superior knowledge and they had sufficient control over CBPL in other aspects of the business, so should owe a duty of care in relation to health and safety. The Court of Appeal gave general guidance where a parent company could assume a duty of care for its subsidiaries’ employees; 1. Where the businesses of the parent and subsidiary are in a relevant respect the same; 2. The parent has, or ought to have, superior knowledge on some relevant aspect of health and safety in the particular industry; 3.The subsidiary's system of work is unsafe as the parent company knew, or ought to have known; and 4.The parent knew or ought to have foreseen that the subsidiary or its employees would rely on its using that superior knowledge for the employees' protection. It is not necessary to show that the parent is in the practice of intervening in the health and safety policies of the subsidiary. Although the Court have stressed that a duty of care from the parent company to an employee of one of its subsidiaries does not arise automatically, the outcome of this decision poses a real risk to parent companies in a group of companies with financial and reputational implications. It may therefore be prudent for parent companies to review their insurance policies to ensure cover for liabilities that may arise from acts of the parent company itself or from their subsidiaries. We at Blacks can advise on all aspects of health and safety and negligence claims.

Porsche Cayman GT4 By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk
Porsche has just announced its newest addition to the family – the Porsche Cayman GT4 which is perhaps the most anticipated new performance car of 2015. Why? Because this is the car that should finally demonstrate the full potential of the brilliant Cayman mid-engined chassis. This is the first time Porsche has introduced such a focused GT model based on the mid-engined, two-seat Cayman coupe. Sharing components and genetic spirit with the iconic 911 GT3, a lap time of 7 min 40 sec around the Nürburgring Nordschleife places the Cayman GT4 emphatically as the new benchmark at the top of its market segment. It also makes a clear statement that Porsche will continue to promote radical two-door sports cars now and in the future sports cars that are developed at the company’s Motorsport department in Weissach.

2015 full of challenges and races for Maserati and Giovani Soldini
2015 promises to be a year packed with tough, ambitious sporting challenges for Maserati and Giovanni Soldini as they prepare to compete in prestigious races and embark on new ocean record attempts. After two years and 60,000 miles of sea, the equivalent of two trips around the world, Maserati has re-emerged after two months in the yard for specialist maintenance work, ready and eager to get going again. Aside from Soldini (skipper), Maserati will have a complement of 10 determined and expert crew aboard: Italians Guido Broggi (boat captain), Corrado Rossignoli (first bowman), Andrea Fantini (pitman), Francesco Malingri (media) and John Elkann (tailer and boat owner); German Boris Herrmann (navigator) ; Spaniard Oliver Herrera Perez (second bowman); Frenchman Gwen Riou, Monegasque Pierre Casiraghi and Swede Andreas Axelsson (all tailers). Maserati’s first event of 2015 is the RORC Caribbean 600 Race, which casts off on February 23 from Antigua. Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in collaboration with the Antigua Yacht Club, this is the seventh edition of the longest and most important race of the Caribbean season. The 605-mile route winds its way north from Antigua, leaving Barbuda, the Nevis Islands, Saba and St. Barth to starboard, then around St Martin and on down to Guadeloupe before snaking back to Antigua. In May, Maserati is scheduled to attempt to break the San FranciscoShanghai record, which retraces the 7,000-mile route across the Pacific Ocean plied by the legendary clippers in the mid-19th century. In 1853, Swordfish, built two years before and under the command of Captain Charles Collins, established herself as the fastest ever clipper, covering the route in 32 days and 9 hours, thereby slashing two days off the record previously held by Romance of the Sea. Lastly, as the year draws to a close, Giovanni Soldini and the Maserati team will be tackling one of the world’s most famous and challenging events, the Rolex Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race, a punishing 628-nautical mile gallop in extreme conditions during which some of the world’s top boats do battle for this coveted trophy. Staged by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and the Royal Club of Tasmania, the race was first held in 1945 when just nine competitors lined up at the start. In last year’s 70th edition there were no less 117, 93 of which made it all the way to Hobart. The current race record belongs to the Australian yacht Wild Oats XI owned by Bob Oately, (winner of eight of the last 10 editions, 2014 included), which in 2012 sprinted the distance between Sydney and Hobart in 1 day, 18 hours, 23 seconds and 12 hundredths of a second. There have been some truly gruelling editions of the race, including in 1998 when an exceptionally severe storm sank five boats and six lives were lost. That year, of the 115 yachts that began the race, only 44 reached Hobart.

Chevrolet’s back with a vengeance with it’s supercharged 650bhp V8 Corvette Z06
Toyota says it will increase production of its Mirai fuel cell car. The hydrogen-powered saloon was launched in Japan on 15th December last year and will be introduced in the UK and other selected European markets during 2015. The new plan calls for production to increase from 700 units this year to approximately 2,000 in 2016 and around 3,000 in 2017. Toyota decided the supply structure should be adjusted to reflect the level of demand for the vehicle, in
view of around 1,500 orders being received in the first month of sales in Japan and the prospect of the model being launched in Europe and the USA later this year. Following the production increases, sales plans for Japan, the US and Europe will be formulated, taking into consideration the level of hydrogen infrastructure development, energy policies, car purchasing subsidies, consumer demand, environmental regulations and other factors in each region.
The Z06 rejoins the Corvette lineup for 2015 as the most trackcapable model in the iconic car's 62-year history. Stretching the performance envelope for Corvette with unprecedented levels of aerodynamic downforce, a jawdropping 650bhp, thanks to its supercharged LT4 supercharged 6.2L V-8 engine and its highperformance eight-speed paddleshift automatic transmission. The all-new is SAE-certified at 650 horsepower (485 kW) engine delivers 6,400 rpm and 650 lb-ft of torque (881 Nm) at 3,600 rpm making the 2015 Corvette Z06 the most powerful production car ever from General Motors. For the first time since 1963, the Z06 is also offered in coupe and convertible models and is loaded with all sorts of technical gadgets such as an electric-locking glovebox, 8-inch colour touch radio, satnav, Bose audio system, headup display, keyless entry and rearvision camera, just to name a few. The aluminum structure is 20 percent stiffer than the previous, fixed-roof Z06 and actually, building a modern Z06 Convertible was only enabled by recent technological advancements over the last five years, which made it possible to produce a frame strong enough for a Z06 Convertible. As there are no structural reinforcements needed for the Z06 Convertible, it has a nearly identical curb weight as the Z06 Coupe. They also share the same chassis tuning, powertrain output, driver technologies and
equipment options - including a track-focused Z07 Performance Package. The Z07 package adds adjustable front and rear aero components for unprecedented aerodynamic downforce, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires for enhanced grip, and Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake rotors that improve braking performance and contribute to greater handling through reduced unsprung weight. The all-new, industry-leading ‘Performance Data Recorder’ enables users to record highdefinition video, with telemetry overlays, of their driving experiences on and off the track. The performance targets of the Z06 also posed a challenge for the design team, which had to create a striking design that also contributed to increased capabilities. The design changes began not with the exterior panels, but the tyres. To deliver the levels of grip needed for the Z06's performance targets, the car was fitted with larger Michelin tires (Pilot Super Sport tires for the Z06; Sport Cup 2 tires with the Z07 package). The P285/30ZR19 front tires are 1.5 inches wider than the tires on the Stingray, while the 335/25ZR20 rear tires are two inches wider. To cover the wider tyre tread, the fenders of the Z06 were extended by 2.2 inches (56 mm) at the front, and 3.15 inches (80 mm) at the rear. These extensions give the Corvette Z06 a wider, lower appearance further emphasized by a unique rear fascia. Their
open, ultralight design showcases the massive Brembo brakes, which are part of the design aesthetic: The standard Z06 features a front splitter, spats around the front wheel openings, a unique carbon-fiber hood with a larger vent, and a rear spoiler. The exterior design also reflects the increased cooling required for the new Corvette Z06. For example, the mesh pattern on the front fascia was painstakingly designed to deliver the most possible airflow to the supercharger's intercooler heat exchanger, so much so that the mesh grill directs more air into the engine bay than if the grille was removed. The unique grille also features dedicated brake-cooling intakes and wider grille outlets on the bottom serve as air diffusers. The grille is complemented with a larger hood vent, which vents hot air from the engine compartment and contributes to downforce by allowing air driven through the grille to exit through the hood rather than being forced under the car, which could create lift. Additional cooling elements include larger front fender vents and unique air blades over the inlets on the rear fenders of Coupe models, which force about 50 percent more air into the cooling ducts for the transmission and differential coolers than those on the Stingray. Convertible models feature under-body inlets. To cope with the additional airflow, Z06 Coupe and Convertible also have larger rearfascia openings than the Stingray.

SNEAK PREVIEW: New Toyota RND Concept Toyota is breaking with motor industry convention by revealing a new product outside the familiar surroundings of an international motor show. Instead its new RND Concept will make its world debut in the UK on 26th January, ready for fast-track development that should see it changing the face of motoring within weeks. The first image released today hints at how the concept’s design marks a radical shift in direction for Toyota, taking the “fun-todrive” qualities of its cars to a higher level. Although presented as a concept, Toyota acknowledges the RND will be unveiled in its

production-ready form. Manufacturing and product supply have been secured and on-the-road pricing has been fixed at a level that will make the RND Concept accessible to the widest possible market. Toyota is confident, too, that the RND Concept’s impact will go far beyond its own model range, having the potential to transform the look of every vehicle on the road. President of Toyota GB, Matt Harrison, said: “Full details of the RND Concept will be announced next week, but ahead of the official unveiling I can say that this is something we are proud of and that will make a valuable contribution to the world we live in.”

PEUGEOT 308 GT Performance and style offers remarkable fuel efficiency
The showroom success enjoyed by the award-winning Peugeot 308 looks set to reach even greater heights with the arrival of a new dynamic flagship – the stunning 308 GT. Available in Hatchback and SW body styles, both models offer assertive new styling, outstanding performance-oriented engines and bespoke chassis modifications to create a lower ride height. The result is an exceptional on-theroad experience that will delight the most enthusiastic drivers. The enhancements clearly embody Peugeot’s continued move upmarket, highlighted by the 308’s recognition as the 2014 European Car of the Year. The new Peugeot 308 GT retains all the elements which have made the 308 range such a huge commercial hit throughout Europe. This includes the striking exterior design, innovative iCockpit cabin, versatile interior and high perceived quality. Remarkable engine efficiency, with high fuel economy and ultra-low emissions, is also part of the 308 GT package. The 308 GT’s unique design quality is immediately obvious – it presents a great aerodynamic and stylistic purity, most notable where the black lacquered door mirrors merge with the tinted windows. Visibly widened by its side sill finishers, the 308 GT sits on 18-inch ‘Diamant’ wheels, shod with Michelin
Pilot Sport 3 tyres. Their fluted spokes and engraved motif are also available on 308 GT-Line models, and it’s been fitted with top-of-the-range headlights made up of 62 LEDs. To deliver maximum enjoyment, the 308 GT features enhanced new chassis settings. Ride height has been lowered by 7mm at the front and 10mm at the rear for a more dynamic drive. The revised suspension is mated to a choice of high-performance engines, one petrol and one diesel, that both meet stringent Euro 6 emissions standards. The four-cylinder 1.6-litre THP 205 Stop & Start petrol engine is specified with a six-speed manual gearbox to make the most of its 285Nm of torque, available between 1,750 and 4,500rpm. This high level of performance is
combined with well controlled CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, from just 130g/km and 50.4mpg. The four-cylinder 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 diesel engine also offers a high level of performance. It delivers its maximum power of 180hp at 3,750rpm and its maximum torque of 400Nm at 2,000rpm. All 308 GT cars have a 6-speed transmission. The ‘EAT6’ is an abbreviation for ‘Efficient Automatic Transmission’ 6-speed. The Peugeot 308 GT is now available to order with deliveries commencing from March 2015.

Suliman becomes a Villain Premier League club snap up Asian talent One of England’s highest rated young Asian footballers committed his future to Aston Villa last month, despite reported interest from European giants, Bayern Munich. 16-year-old Easah Suliman, from Moseley in Birmingham, has been with the Midland outfit since the age of eight, progressing up through the youth teams. A versatile defender, who can operate either at centreback or left-back, the teenage ace can also play in centre midfield if required. Last season, he was a member of the academy squad which competed in the Barclays Under-18s Premier League and FA Youth Cup, whilst also representing England at U17 level.
Academy director Sean Kimberley was thrilled to sign up Suliman and believes he has all the skills and potential to be a key player for Villa in the future. He said: “We're delighted that Easah has signed his first professional contract with the club. “Easah has been at the club through his foundation years at junior school and he's a Birmingham lad who's come through the local recruitment process. “We've been able to develop young, local players over the years and it's great that we can continue to do that with Easah. “He's going away with England U17s next month and he's continuing to make good progress both with them and
here at Villa. He's at the start of his career now and everything is in front of him. “The key for him now is to continue to work hard, to maintain the same excellent attitude he has displayed so far and to continue to learn from his coaches. “Having fought off competition from home and abroad for his signature, everyone here at Villa will help him get the most out of his abilities and we're excited to work with him in the coming years.” Suliman joins an exclusive list of Asian players registered to Premier League teams, and will look to make an impact if given a chance by current youth-favouring manager, Paul Lambert.

CONTROVERSIAL: Current FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, will face three contenders for his job in a May vote
Four horse race FIFA have confirmed that incumbent Sepp Blatter, former Portugal playmaker Luis Figo, Dutch FA president Michael van Praag and Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein of Jordan have bid to stand for president. Prospective candidates, David Ginola and Jerome Champagne both ended their campaigns for the top seat in world football last week.
Soccer's governing body said in a statement that the four would be subject to integrity checks carried out by FIFA's ethics committee before they could be formally declared as candidates. “Upon receipt of the results of the integrity checks, the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee will reconvene in order to review all of the submissions and validate
their compliance with the applicable FIFA regulatory provisions,” said FIFA in a statement. “Following this process, the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee will formally admit and declare the candidates who are eligible for the office of FIFA President.” Blatter, 78, is standing for a fifth mandate, having been in power since 1998 and despite having many critics in Europe, is still expected to be one of the favourites to win the vote in Zurich on 29th May.

PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS IN BOXING By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
Mike Tyson the former world heavyweight champion was asked an interesting question about how modern day boxing compared to boxing in the past and what was the difference? The answer given by Tyson was simple and that is boxing over the years has evolved and with improved knowledge about the sport and nutrition the human body has improved with athletes getting bigger, stronger and better. Modern day sport has advanced and that is evidential with the previous world records being broken and athletes getting stronger. The advancement of the sport also means that it is now more competitive amongst the participants and this has led to many athletes including boxers and MMA fighters turning to sport enhancing drugs to give them an edge over the competition. The sport enhancement drugs or steroids can alter normal bodily function and give the boxer an unfair advantage, pose a health risk and violate the sport. The use of such a drug is illegal and known as cheating and is often referred to as doping. There are a number of illegal drugs being used in the sport of boxing and they are generally used to enhance the physical performance of the boxer in an attempt to prevent them falling behind the competitor’s even if it means damaging their health and risking their

sport careers. The authorities test the athletes for drug use by a simple sample analysis of both blood and urine and if drug cheating is confirmed then the penalties imposed in the past have included being stripped of their championship title, lifetime banned from the sport or further civil or criminal charges including a fine. There have been a number of boxers like Bantamweight John Donnelly, British heavyweights Ali Adams, Larry Olubamiwu, American welterweight Andre Berto and Lamont Peterson to name a few who were all found guilty of the anti-doping violations and penalised or banned from the sport of boxing. In the UK the British Board of Control has promised a tighter control over illegal substance use in boxing and increased its programme of random drug testing with the identities of the “cheats” to be revealed. In my view the sport of boxing is risky business and each time the boxer enters the boxing ring they carry a huge risk to their health and wellbeing and this is significantly increased and much more deadly if one of the opponents has been using performance enhancing drugs. Boxer Amir Khan who fell victim to a drug cheat (Lamont Peterson) and lost his welterweight title previously has said "There's a lot of drug cheats in boxing right now. I didn't know there were so many until we started to catch people out and I believe every fighter should be randomly tested. You need to be able to trust another boxer you are facing because you are training to bash each other up, it's dangerous as it is. It shows how many have been caught recently that it happens in boxing. It needs to be cleaned up."
Explaining where the idea for the fundraising initiative came from, Bajwa said: “I had seen a lot of people around me doing things for charity and wanted to get involved in something a bit different. “I had previously done a similar challenge back in April but this was something much harder.” He added: “Once I thought up this idea and told people about it, there was no going back. I had some people saying they would travel from abroad just to compete in a few rounds with me so I knew it was going to happen.” After the challenge, Bajwa was told he had broken the Guinness World Record for most consecutive rounds of full Thai sparring – including elbows and knees to the face. “When it was all over I was just so relieved, I had been hit so many times,” he said. “After ten rounds I remember thinking to myself, there are another 100 of these to go yet, but it wasn’t until the 60th or 70th that I really began to feel it. “Every hit was hurting and felt so heavy by then but I knew that I just had to keep going because people were counting on me.” Taking place at the K-Star Muay Thai Gym, in Oldbury, the now World-record holder added his thanks to all those who had supported him throughout the day. “I have to thank Damion Trainor in particular who let me use his gym all day and even started the sparring with me in the early rounds. “He is a former two-time world champion in the sport so it was definitely a tough start which set me up for the rest of the day. Also, a big thank you to everyone who has donated so far and for their messages of support.” The World Record attempt was completed on behalf of the Mary Stevens Hospice which offers specialist care for people living with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, as well as dedicated support for their families and carers. Bajwa’s friend’s mother was cared for at the hospice in her final days before sadly passing away and the ‘amazing care’ she received was further motivation for the challenge. If you would like to sponsor Mubz Bajwa, you can still do so by visiting his JustGiving page.

Indian GP still possible
Motorsport fans in India may feel a little let-down by their nation’s lack of commitment in attempting to bring any fuel sports to the South Asian country in recent times, yet that could soon change according to one sport’s CEO. After the Indian Grand Prix was discontinued for the 2014 and 2015 season, there is no denying that India looked to have fallen out of love with motorsports – not according to MotoGP’s chief, Carmelo Ezpeleta. The World Superbike Series may have been cancelled two years ago but Ezpeleta has now said he remains hopeful
that India will be ready to host a race ‘pretty soon’ if guidelines are changed. “We would love to have a race in India but there are many issues that need to be sorted out first -like customs clearances,” he told the Times of India. “I am sure the govt will support us once MotoGP's popularity shoots up and we may stage a race in the next couple of years. Getting an Indian manufacturer like Mahindra to supply bikes for a team is one step in that direction.” However, Ezpeleta did add that no promoter had yet been found for the sport in India.
He continued: “We are in talks with a lot of corporates but nothing concrete has come up. There are many film stars interested in promoting MotoGP and we would love to have them at our races. In particular, we had even got a request from John Abraham.” POTENTIAL: Carmelo Ezpeleta says he remains optimistic about the chances of a MotoGP return to India

Force India reveal latest motors in preparation for Spain
DESIGN: Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg will look to continue where they left off in the 2014 season when they take to the track in the new VJM08 model this month
New season, new look Seven months before his international ban from cricket was set to expire, convicted spot-fixer Mohammad Amir has been told he can return to the sport. The 22-year-old has not played since being banned after a tour of England in 2010, when teammates Salman Butt and Mohammed Asif were also charged with similar offences. Amir will be able to represent Pakistan from October, after a six month probation period is completed, meaning his return to the international stage could come against England in the scheduled October series. An ICC statement said: “The ACSU chairman, Sir Ronnie Flanagan, with the prior approval of the ICC Board and the Pakistan Cricket Board, has exercised his discretion to allow Mohammad Amir to return to domestic cricket played under the auspices of the Pakistan Cricket Board with immediate effect. “Amir’s five-year ban is scheduled to expire on 2nd September 2015. The ACSU chairman had exercised the powers vested in him under Article 6.8 of the ICC AntiCorruption Code after he was satisfied that Amir had cooperated with the ACSU by fully disclosing his part in the matters that led to his disqualification, admitting his guilt, showing remorse and cooperating with the Unit’s on-going investigations and by recording messages for the ACSU education sessions.”

Sahara Force India launched its 2015 season last week by offering fans and media a first impression of how their new car will look when it makes its track debut this month. It was during a spectacular event at the Soumaya museum in Mexico City, that drivers Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg pulled back the covers to reveal the team’s fresh new look for 2015. The new VJM08 livery is guaranteed to get heads turning. The chassis features an elegant combination of silver and black with the team’s traditional colour of orange streaking from the nose cone to the rear of the car in two symmetrical curves. Key to the new livery is the introduction of several commercial partners for 2015, as well as retaining longstanding partnerships with companies around the world. Team Principal, Dr Vijay Mallya, was the first to praise the team’s new livery, labelling the look an ‘evolution’ from 2014. “[The new look] reflects the growth of the team and the global brands with which we are
working,” he said. “I love the addition of silver, which makes the car appear more sleek and aggressive and I’m sure it’s something that will appeal to the fans as well. Our traditional team colours remain integrated in the livery, but we’ve given it a very modern twist.” With relatively stable technical regulations, the VJM08 has been designed with evolution rather than revolution in mind. The most significant changes from the outside will appear at the front of the car with the lowering of the front of the chassis and nose. “The front of the car looks very different from what we had developed previously,” explains Technical Director Andrew Green. “It is a redesign that involved a lot of work over the winter, as the new regulations caused a loss in terms of downforce and we’ve been working to claw back all that performance.” The car will also feature several subtle changes, including modified sculpting of the sidepods and new cooling intakes. Underneath the skin there will be a completely new rear suspension layout with a new hydro-mechanical system replacing the original torsion springs. Perez and Hulkenberg are expected to give the VJM08 its track testing debut in Barcelona this month.

Battered, bruised and hurting, Mubz Bajwa walks away from the ring after 111 consecutive rounds of boxing yet still has a smile on his face, knowing he has broken a world record and raised hundreds of pounds for charity.
The Birmingham competitor, who has been involved in the sport for almost 20 years, took on the mammoth challenge last month in an attempt to raise money for Mary Steven’s Hospice. Having completed a similar task of 150 rounds in April, Bajwa stepped up the challenge this time around, doubling the length of
each round and adding the fullcontact stipulation. For more than seven hours, he came up against fellow Thai boxers, including former world champions, as he amassed an incredible tally of three-minute consecutive rounds with only 30 seconds rest between each one.
