“No evidence of extremism” Trojan Horse enquiry committee concludes on radicalisation accusations in Birmingham schools By Anush Ansari

A series of official investigations found the claims last year that Islamist extremists had tried to take over several schools were groundless. In March 2014 an anonymous document causing national panic came to light. It claimed that schools in Birmingham were

deliberately being targeted by Muslim school governors. It was alleged that individuals had attempted to oust existing school leaders and replace them with heads who would adopt a more Islamic agenda in running the schools.

A new direction for pop sensation as he states he wants to “feel like a normal 22-year-old”

When One Direction became one man down on its "On the Road Again" world tour earlier this week, the boy band's publicist insisted that Zayn Malik was taking time out due to stress. However, in a statement on One’ Direction’s Facebook page 22-year-old Bradford-lad Zayn has confirmed that he is quitting the band. He said: “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. “But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. “ I'd like to apologise to the fans if I've let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I

want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight. “I know I have four friends for life in Louis, Liam, Harry and Niall. I know they will continue to be the best band in the world. Now the remaining band members Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, will continue on their current tour of Manila, Philippines, Jakarta, Indonesia and South Africa as a foursome and will release their fifth album later this year. Malik's departure comes days after he hit back on Twitter at rumours of trouble in his relationship with fiancee Perrie Edwards of the band Little Mix after he was photographed partying with another woman in Pukhet, Thailand. Zayn who has been battling to shrug off the cheating accusations tweeted: "I'm 22 years old ... I love a girl named Perrie Edwards... And there’s a lot of jealous f***s in this world, I’m sorry for what this looks like”. Other than that, Zayn has been completely quiet on Twitter. But Zayn’s woe’s are nothing new. Last year a video circulated online

appearing to show Malik and fellow band member Louis Tomlinson smoking cannabis and joking about drug use. This led the Philippines to impose a $5,000 "weed bond" on Malik and Tomlinson, with the money to be forfeited if either of them was caught using or promoting illegal drugs while in the country for the current tour. The news of Zayn cutting his ties with 1D has left millions of fans heartbroken. Disappointed fans are demanding that tickets should be discounted with Zayn now missing from the "On the Road Again" world tour. One Direction's biggest hits include "Best Song Ever", "Kiss You", "What Makes You Beautiful" and "Story of My Life". "We're really sad to see Zayn go, but we totally respect his decision and send him all our love for the future. The past five years have been beyond amazing, we've gone through so much together, so we will always be friends," the band members said. Simon Cowell, the British music and television impresario who launched the band, said: "I would like to say thank you to Zayn for everything he has done for One Direction. Since I first met Zayn in 2010, I have grown very, very fond and immensely proud - of him. "I have seen him grow in confidence and I am truly sorry to see him leave. As for One Direction, fans can rest assured that Niall, Liam, Harry and Louis are hugely excited about the future of the band."

Gandhi takes his place in Parliament Square Iconic statue revealed to mark centenary year

UNVEILED: The statue’s official launch date was Saturday 14th March with Prime Minister David Cameron and Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in attendance

One of the greatest humanitarian and political leaders in modern history was eternalised in London last weekend as a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was officially unveiled. Prime Minister, David Cameron, and Indian Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, drew back the covers from the giant bronze statue in Parliament Square to commemorate 100 years since Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa. The ceremony, on Saturday 14th March, featured personal reflections from Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, and former Governor of West Bengal, Shri Gopalkrishna Gandhi. Amitabh Bachchan, one of India’s most prominent actors, also read words written by the renowned Indian leader, in front of members of the public and Lord and Lady Desai of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust - the charity that raised over £1million to fund the statue. Mr Cameron quoted Gandhi in his speech on the day and welcomed the official opening of the capital’s latest landmark. “This statue is a magnificent tribute to one of the most towering figures in the history of world politics and by putting Mahatma Gandhi in this famous Square we are giving him an eternal home in our country,” he said. “Many of his teachings remain as potent today as when he first made them. ‘The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others’ and ‘Be the change that you want to see in the world’ remain timeless, profound and inspiring words of wisdom. “This statue celebrates the incredibly special friendship between the world's oldest democracy and its largest, as well as the universal power of Gandhi’s message. “Our ties with India have remained close throughout history and continue to go from strength to strength – through mutual respect as equals, cooperation and trade, and of course through the oneand-a-half million Indians who do so much to make Britain the country it is today, bringing our two countries closer, to the benefit of both.”

The statue was created by renowned British sculptor Philip Jackson, who is known for his work on similar projects for the Queen Mother and the Bomber Command memorials. Mr Jackson was inspired by a 1931 photo of Gandhi at No10 Downing Street where he met the Prime Minister of the day, Ramsey McDonald. Indian Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, said of the unveiling: “The statue will help ensure that the legacy of Gandhi lives on for future generations. “It also marks an important, historic moment celebrating the strong bond

between our two nations. India and the UK share the same values and we are a partnership of equals. This lasting friendship is just one of many legacies left by Gandhi, which I am keen that we work hard to strengthen further.” Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Sajid Javid, added: “This statue will stand as a reminder of Gandhi’s ideals and Britain’s historic relationship with India and its people. Our nations’ friendship as equals, which brings growth and prosperity to both our countries, owes much to Gandhi’s determination to achieve independence though peace.”

Extremist individuals blacklist Home Secretary Theresa May outlines a list of measures the government would introduce, including a review of the Sharia law in Britain Home Secretary, Theresa May has announced that a blacklist of extremist individuals and organisations with whom the government and public sector should not engage, is being drawn up. May has also outlined a list of measures the government would introduce, includes a review of the impact of the Muslim Sharia law in Britain. She said that the UK will no longer tolerate the behaviour of Islamist extremists who ‘reject our values’. The home secretary said a future Tory government would introduce measures such as ‘closure orders’ to shut premises owned or used by extremists. She also said there were plans for civil ‘extremism disruption orders’ that could be used against individuals. Mrs May also said everyone in Britain had ‘responsibilities as well as rights’, and must respect laws and institutions. A ‘partnership’ of individuals and communities could tackle the issue, she added. The home secretary outlined a list of measures a majority Conservative government would introduce, including closure orders for premises being used by extremists and banning orders. The package would include a positive campaign to promote British values. The move goes far beyond current powers to ban violent extremist and terrorist organisations and paves the way for a range of non-violent legal organisations to be put on a blacklist and boycotted by the government. David Cameron, for example, has promised for the last five years to ban the non-violent radical Islamist organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir but it has failed to meet the legal criteria to be banned. The Home Office defines extremism as: “Vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.”

Measures to be introduced if the Conservatives won the general election • ‘Banning orders’ for groups which do not reach the current threshold to be outlawed under terrorism laws • A ‘positive campaign to promote British values’ to the public • A review of supplementary schools, which are currently unregulated • HM Inspectorate of Constabulary reviewing how police forces have responded to ‘honour crimes’, female genital mutilation and forced marriage • New ‘extremism officer’ roles in prisons to deal with extremist inmates and gangs • A ‘full review of citizenship law’ to make sure successful applicants respect British values • A ‘sharp reduction’ in funding for translation services and a ‘significant increase’ in money for English language training

Duty to learn English In 2001-2002 and 2008-2009 the Labour government had to treble spending on English for “speakers of other languages courses” to £300m over that period. In 2005 they took the decision to start charging anyone who wasn’t on Employment and Support Allowance or Jobseeker’s Allowance benefits. Costs of classes vary, but on average an intensive one-year course of 15 hours a week could easily cost more than £1,000. According to National Association for Teaching English and Community Languages, funding cuts since 2011 have resulted in a 42% drop in the number of migrants able to access/afford an English language course in the UK, down from 82,900 in 2012-13 to 48,300. A survey in May 2014 suggested providers had waiting lists of up 1,000 potential students, meaning that many of those desperate to learn English are being turned away.

Giving all children access to ‘Good’ education

Britain’s Department for Education (DfE) is encouraging Bangladeshi parents to consider taking up the opportunity of free early education and childcare for their twoyear-old children. The scheme enables families with an income of less than £16,190 per year from either work or benefits to apply for 15 hours of free early education and childcare a week. If eligible, families can take advantage of one of the approved child-minders, nurseries or children's centres operating in their local area. Only nurseries and childminders with ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ Ofsted reports are able to offer places. Amongst parents already signed up to the scheme is 39-yearold mother-of-three Aysha Haque from Southwark. After coming across information in regard to the initiative at her local library, Aysha called up her local Family Information Service to learn more about the process and

SUCCESS: Aysha Haque is one parent who has utilised the scheme to give her youngest child access to ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ childcare in Southwark

was promptly sent a form to complete and return. Upon hearing she was eligible for the free childcare, she says it was an easy decision to give her youngest child the ‘best start’ in life. “My daughter had got used to me taking her to the local toddler groups but I felt like she needed something to make her more independent and help her development as she was just watching TV and playing with the same toys at home,” she explained. “[Since starting her early education] there have been lots of positive changes. My daughter is more talkative and can form long sentences. “She has learnt

manners…she even reminds us if we forget to say please or thankyou. She has also developed great social skills and in particular – learnt how to share and to take turns which has had a positive impact at home with her siblings.” Early education at the age of two has been proven to give children a good start in life, making them more likely to enjoy and do well at school. The DfE is committed to raising awareness and encouraging more Bangladeshi parents who are eligible to take up the offer and choose between a local nursery, children's centre or a registered child-minder.

“No evidence of extremism” Trojan Horse enquiry committee concludes on radicalisation accusations in Birmingham schools

The 'Trojan Horse' letter threatened Birmingham City Council to investigate extremism in schools, stated that council bosses had seven days to conduct an enquiry before the matter went to mainstream national media. Michale Gove – former education secretary has been slammed on how the investigations were conducted after schools were put into ‘special measures’ at a time when students were due to sit their GCSE and A Level examinations. In its report, the education committee concluded on how the Department for Education (DfE), Ofsted and other bodies reacted to the allegations of extremism in Birmingham, and draws out wider lessons for the entire school system. MPs have found a ‘worrying and wasteful lack of coordination’ between the various inquiries carried out by the DfE, Birmingham City Council, the Education Funding Agency, Ofsted and others. The report criticises the 7 March 2014 - Birmingham City Council reveals it is investigating a number of schools in the city after receiving a copy of an anonymous letter referring to Operation Trojan Horse - a plot by some Muslim groups to install governors at schools. It claims responsibility for ousting four head teachers. The Department for Education (DfE) confirms it is also investigating. 17 March 2014 - Ofsted turns up at Park View Academy - one of the schools implicated - for a snap inspection. Two years earlier the predecessor school on the site had been graded outstanding. "All schools should be like this," Ofsted chief Sir Michael Wilshaw had said in March 2012. 31 March 2014 - The DfE says it is looking into claims the Operation Trojan Horse plot targeted 12 schools. 9 April 2014 - The governors of Park View Educational Trust describe the ongoing investigations as a "witch-hunt" . 14 April 2014 - Birmingham City Council says it is looking into allegations involving 25 schools in the city, including primaries, secondaries and academies. Council leader Sir Albert Bore says he does not believe there is a "plot". 15 April 2014 - West Midlands Police condemn the DfE's decision to appoint a former national head of counter terrorism to carry out its investigation for the message it sends 20 April 2014 - Sir Michael Wilshaw takes personal charge of Ofsted's Trojan Horse investigations. 3 May 2014 - Sir Michael says Ofsted has inspected 21 schools in Birmingham.

Department for Education for what it calls a ‘lack of inquisitiveness’ and says the department was ‘slow to take an active interest’ in the allegations.

expressed elsewhere about the changing school landscape and the overlapping roles of the organisations responsible for oversight of schools.

“Former education secretary Michael Gove slammed for accusing Islamist plot” The report also emphasises Ofsted's ‘inability to identify problems’ in schools on first inspection, when they were found ‘shortly afterwards to be failing’. The chairman of the education committee, Graham Stuart said, adding that those overlapping inquiries had ‘contributed to the sense of crisis and confusion’. The Trojan Horse affair epitomises many of the questions and concerns

Trojan Horse timeline 3 June 2014 - Three of the schools under investigation publish their Ofsted reports. Ninestiles and Small Heath are rated as "outstanding" and Washwood Heath as "good". 4 June 2014 - Home Secretary Theresa May accuses Education Secretary Michael Gove of failing to deal with an alleged Islamist plot to take over schools. 9 June 2014 - Ofsted places five schools in special measures and confirms that a sixth (which was already in special measures) is "inadequate". The schools involved deny any wrongdoing. 10 June 2014 - Two academies - Park View and Nansen Primary - are told they will lose funding, while Oldknow Academy and Golden Hillock School are warned they too could lose funding unless concerns are addressed. 10 June 2014 - Ofsted head Sir Michael says the experience in Birmingham could lead to snap inspections at schools across the country. 15 June 2014 - At a public meeting, parents of pupils at Park View Academy call for governors at the school to stand down. Vice-principal Lee Donaghy, however, said governors had been behind many of the changes that saw the school rated as outstanding by Ofsted in 2012. 16 June 2014 - The Park View Educational Trust, which runs three of the schools put in special measures, accuses the government of "deliberately misrepresenting" schools and describes inspections as "woefully shoddy" and

Mr Stuart, said that there was ‘no evidence of extremism or radicalisation, apart from a single isolated incident’, was found by any of the inquiries and there was ‘no evidence of a sustained plot nor of a similar situation pertaining elsewhere in the country’. “Questions have been raised about the appropriateness of Ofsted's framework and the reliability and robustness of its judgements,” Mr Stuart said. "fatally flawed". 4 July 2014 - Governors at Golden Hillock School said they were not given enough time to make improvements before a visit by Ofsted. 15 July 2014 - The board of trustees at Park View Education Trust resign. Its chairman Tahir Alam said the decision had been made in the interests of the children and said a "coordinated and vicious" attack by former Education Secretary Michael Gove and the Department for Education had left the threemember board with no choice but to step down. 17 July 2014 - A leaked copy of Peter Clarke's report for the DfE finds evidence there was an agenda to introduce "an intolerant and aggressive Islamist ethos" into some Birmingham schools. Details of the report by the former counter-terrorism chief were leaked to The Guardian newspaper. 18 July 2014 - Birmingham City Council releases key findings from its inquiry into 25 schools. Written by Ian Kershaw, it finds no evidence of violent extremism, radicalisation or an antiBritish agenda being promoted. However, it does warn of governance problems in some schools. Mr Kershaw also criticises the council's role in supporting the schools involved. 21 July 2014 - Birmingham MP, Khalid Mahmood, says teachers forced out of schools involved in the Trojan Horse allegations deserve to be compensated. He claimed at least 12 senior school staff had been bullied or forced out of their posts. 22 July 2014 - Peter Clarke's report for the DfE is officially released.

Gaza doctors return

RECOVERY: Nine-year-old Weam was hit by a rocket and had to have her lower left leg amputated under the care and supervision of British doctors

A group of UK-funded NHS surgeons have returned from treating war-wounded patients in Gaza six months after the temporary ceasefire was agreed. The volunteer doctors visited the region regularly for the past six months to carry out surgery on patients with severe injuries and train doctors in Gaza hospitals to improve their surgical capacities. The team were deployed by Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), working with NGO Ideals, with £724,000 in funding from the Department for International Development (DFID). The funding is part of DFID’s £37 million package of assistance in response to the 2014 Gaza crisis.

Volunteers complete selfless work in war-stricken region Justine Greening, International Development Secretary, said: “Six months on from the temporary ceasefire the situation in Gaza remains dire. Around 108,000 people were left homeless by the conflict and over 11,000 Palestinians were injured. “The vital work of these British surgeons is an important part of the UK effort to help the people of Gaza rebuild their lives. However none of the underlying causes of the conflict have yet been addressed. The UK is playing its part to help those caught up in the conflict, but it is clear the need for a political solution for Gaza is more urgent than ever.” Amongst the patients who were treated by the British doctors, was nine-year-old Weam. She was playing in the garden of her home with her father last summer when a rocket landed on them and exploded. She suffered major injuries to both her legs. Her left leg had to be amputated below the knee, and now she needs a follow-up operation on her right foot. Two days after the operation, Dr Graeme Groom - an orthopaedic surgeon from King’s College Hospital in London, visited Weam with the team of medics to check up on how she’s recovering. “I’m happy because they’ve removed all

the shrapnel from my leg and I feel better now. Before my leg felt very heavy and now it feels free” she said. Weam’s mother just wants her daughter to get back to normal. “I’m so thankful to these doctors giving up their time to come here and help the people of Gaza” she says. “The facilities here are not good, there is not enough equipment and everything, but with these people coming they bring hope. “I hope there will be no more wars making problems for our children. “I just want to see my daughter growing up, continuing her study, playing like other kids and eventually working.” SUPPORT: Dr Naveen Cavale, a plastic and reconstructive surgery specialist, based at King’s College in London, flew to Gaza in September to help train doctors and surgeons whilst also caring for wounded patients

CHARITY: Jay and Bhranti Naik took part in the second annual ‘Strictly Get Dancing’ event for Martin House Children’s Hospice last weekend

Evening of dance raises £30,000 for hospice Fundraisers laced up their dancing shoes last weekend as the ‘Martin House Strictly Get Dancing’ event returned to Wetherby for a night of waltzing and tango. Fifteen couples competed for this year’s crown in front of a crowd of more than 400 as they danced the night away on Saturday 28th February. After showcasing their skills infront of the team of celebrity judges, and a willing audience, it was Ian Naylor and Melissa Magson who eventually came out victorious to claim the dancing title. Jay and Bhranti Naik, and Julie and Lee Walker finished as runnersup following the event which helped raise an amazing £30,000 for the hospice. At the start of the year, many of the couples hadn’t even danced a step in their lives yet after six weeks of lessons, they took centre stage in the annual charity event. Jay and Bhranti first began working with the hospice via the Give a Gift project over a year ago and decided to take on the dancing challenge as a way of raising money through an initiative their whole family was interested in. Self confessed ‘avid Strictly fans’, the couple completed the group tango routine to open the show on the night, before the crowd were treated to an Argentine Tango and finally the classic Waltz. Bhranti said she was delighted to

see such a ‘fantastic’ sum of money raised for the hospice, all of which will go towards helping children cared for at Martin House and their families.

“We had around 12 hours in total where we were taught the routines which were quite hard, especially for Jay who has never danced in his life,” she added.

“After every series, Jay and I always say we should take dance classes but have just never got round to it. When we heard about this project we put our names down and the whole experience has been really enjoyable.” Explaining more about why they took up the challenge this year, Bhranti said: “We have two children of our own and every time Strictly comes on the telly, we make a full evening of it, from watching each dance to scoring them ourselves. “After every series, Jay and I always say we should take dance classes but have just never got round to it. When we heard about this project we put our names down and the whole experience has been really enjoyable.” Bhranti says she attended dance classes during her youth yet for husband Jay, it was a completely new experience.

“He did really well to not only learn the right steps but the posture, rhythm and everything else that came with the dances. “To then perform in front of 400 people was really nerve-wrecking for the pair of us but once we were out there, after the first 10 seconds, you just start to enjoy it. “There was so much goodwill in the room that the nerves went away.” All the couples on the night were watched by an esteemed judging panel comprised of ITV Calendar’s Christine Talbot, Rose Chadwick from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Jeff Hordley

Sarah Tarpey from Martin House, who organised the event, said: “Ian and Melissa put on an amazing show, dancing with grace and elegance. “I am delighted that they won and congratulations to runners up, Jay and Bhranti Naik, and Julie and Lee

Walker. “I am immensely proud of all 14 couples who took part for embracing this event and raising such a phenomenal amount for the hospice.” If you would like to sponsor Jay and Bhrantai you still can by visiting their Just Giving page (www.justgiving.com/Jay-BhrantiNaik) with all donations going to Martin House.

Conman targeted music fans to fuel drug habit Two year sentence for fraudulent ticket sales

A Birmingham man who conned thousands of pounds out of concert goers over 12 months in order to fund his cocaine habit was finally jailed last week. Jay Carmen was handed the sentence after admitting numerous fraud offences where he advertised fictitious tickets on social media and auction websites, netting him £9,500 in total to pay for his £200-a-day addiction. Music fans across the UK were left out of pocket after paying up to £500 for Beyoncé tickets and £600 for admissions to the Isle of Wight’s Bestival festival but the tickets did not exist and never arrived. Carmen, aged 27, also duped a number of horse lovers by selling expensive saddles for £465 on equestrian websites. The offences all took place between February 2013 and March 2014. Carmen was caught when detectives traced the bank account he was using to transfer the funds and was arrested by officers in May 2014. Carmen, of Pembroke Drive, Northfield, admitted 24 of the offences but denied six of them and the case went to trial at Birmingham Crown Court. But at the last minute, the fraudster changed his mind pleading guilty to all 30 crimes and was sentenced to two years in jail on Friday 20th March. PC Richard Potts, from the force’s Economic Crime Unit, said: “Carmen – who was a legitimate businessman with a silver service and events management training company - used a series of false names as he did not want his perceived good name to be associated with the fraudulent sales. “He lied to his girlfriend and a friend,

saying he needed access to their bank accounts to facilitate funds transfers from his company, but in fact used them to accept payments from his fraudulent sales. “The sentence handed to Carmen reflects the financial impact and stress his crimes had on his victims and he will be the subject of a Proceeds of Crime Act hearing in an attempt to recover some of the money lost. “This case is also a timely reminder that – with the many sporting and music events on offer in the UK over the summer – people need to be on their guard against fraudsters like Carmen, and we’d advise anyone wanting to buy tickets for an event should only buy them from trusted websites or a legitimate ticket seller.”

National minimum wage increased The national minimum wage will increase by three per cent to a new rate of £6.70 per hour from October 2015. This is the largest real-terms increase in the national minimum wage since 2008, and over 1.4 million of Britain’s lowest-paid workers are set to benefit. The hourly rate for younger workers will also increase by 57p an hour to £3.30 for apprentices, and 8p an hour to £3.87 for 16 to 17- year-olds. The government plans to put employers in control of the funding for apprenticeships by introducing a new digital apprenticeship voucher, which will give employers the purchasing power over the government contribution to apprenticeship funding. The employer would register their details on a system being developed by the Skills Funding Agency including their type of business, the details of the apprentice and the apprenticeship standard being

signed up to. The discounted rate, which could be up to 100 per cent for 16 to 18-year-olds, at which employers can purchase training would be calculated and the employer would be able to pass on the voucher code to the provider that is delivering the training for their apprentice. The provider would then reclaim the value of the voucher from the Skills Funding Agency. Announcing the increase, Prime Minister David Cameron said: “At the heart of our long-term economic plan for Britain is a simple idea – that those who put in, should get out; that hard work is really rewarded; that the benefits of recovery are truly national. “That’s what today’s announcement is all about – saying to hardworking taxpayers, this is a government that is on your side. It will mean more financial security for Britain’s families; and a better future for our country. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg added: “This is just one of the many ways in which we’ve created a fairer society whilst building a stronger economy. If you work hard, this government is behind you all the way. “Whether you’re on low pay or starting your dream career through an apprenticeship, you will get more support to help you go further and faster.”

Researchers to build

‘Smart Trousers’ Robotic clothing to be developed in Leeds

A prosthetic hand controlled by the nervous system, robotic clothing to help people with walking, and biosensors to monitor how patients use equipment or exercise during rehabilitation are the focus of three research projects awarded £5.3 million by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The three innovative research projects start work in the spring and are led by Newcastle University, the University of Bristol and the University of Warwick working with 15 other partners including the University of Leeds. UK scientists and clinicians devised the research after being challenged to transform the design and development of assistive and rehabilitative devices using EPSRC’s creative workshop approach, known as a ‘sandpit’. Philip Nelson, Chief Executive of EPSRC explained: “These research studies will improve patients’ lives, allow greater independence and benefit patients with a wide range of mobility and co-ordination difficulties. “With the UK’s ageing population and a rise in disabilities, this highlights one area of EPSRC investment in healthcare research which has a national impact.” In Leeds, a team of researchers will be working with a number of universities to develop soft robotic clothing to improve mobility. The initial objective, expected to be delivered in eighteen months, is to develop a ‘smart sock’, which would aid people recovering from ankle injuries who may struggle to pull their foot upwards when taking a stride.

INNOVATIVE: Dr Kianoush Nazarpour, lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at Newcastle University, is leading the project for a prosthetic hand

The fabric in the ‘smart sock’ will be designed to provide the force needed to get a foot into the right position. By the end of the project, in three years, the team plans to develop a pair of ‘smart trousers’ that give added bionic strength to help wearers climb stairs and stand up. The trousers could also help avoid falls by detecting and providing extra support when the user is losing balance. Dr Abbas Dehghani, Senior Lecturer in the University of Leeds’ School of Mechanical Engineering, will develop the intelligent control system to direct when and how the fabric moves. “The system has to be able to work out what the user is trying to do; it is no good the trousers trying to help you walk, if you actually want to sit down,” Dr Dehghani said. “My job is to develop that top-level intelligent control and the systems that work out and coordinate the movement of the clothing to support that activity.”

“These research studies will improve patients’ lives, allow greater independence and benefit patients with a wide range of mobility and co-ordination difficulties.”

Jaguar Land Rover affirms its commitment to UK with £600m investment

Jaguar Land Rover has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the West Midlands, with confirmation of a £600m investment in the region to support product creation and advanced vehicle manufacturing. The largest single investment has been made at the company’s Castle Bromwich plant, where over £400m has been spent in new and upgraded facilities to support the introduction of the all-new Jaguar XF. Jaguar Land Rover CEO Dr. Ralf Speth said: “Jaguar Land Rover continues to demonstrate its unwavering support to the British automotive industry through sustained investments in advanced research, technology and innovation. “This investment, made here in the heartland of our UK business operations, signals the confidence we have in this region to support the creation, engineering and manufacturing of ultra-low emission, premium British products, today and in the future.” Amongst the most notable investments at the Castle Bromwich site, in support of the all-new XF, is a £320m state-of-the art aluminium body shop which completes the site’s transformation into a global centre of excellence for lightweight vehicle manufacturing. This is the largest single investment in the history of the Castle Bromwich site and highlights a remarkable turnaround in the fortunes of the company’s West

Midlands manufacturing operations, which were earmarked for consolidation during the height of the global economic downturn. Today, sales of Jaguar cars built at the Castle Bromwich plant are almost double that of five years ago thanks to a refreshed and exhilarating model range which also includes the XJ and F-Type. These models together have seen the iconic motoring marque rank as the highest achieving automotive luxury brand in the United States for customer satisfaction and second amongst all automotive nameplates in the J.D. Power 2014 Initial Quality Study (IQS) and Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study. The introduction of the all-new XF completes an all-aluminium line-up at the Midlands plant, which has committed significant investment to every stage of the manufacturing process. £16m has been spent on a new blanker line, which will allow the plant to turn coils of aluminium into ‘blank sheets’ that will be pressed into body panels and parts on a new Aida £50m press line, which is currently under construction. This line will feed in to the new £320m body shop, the most flexible and versatile of its kind throughout Jaguar Land Rover, capable of switching between Jaguar’s entire range of models midproduction. Finally £30m has been invested in significantly upgrading the trim and final assembly hall. The company’s latest infrastructure investment at

Castle Bromwich builds on the plants pioneering lightweight vehicle manufacturing expertise, honed over decades, and demonstrates the inherent agility and flexibility of Jaguar Land Rover’s manufacturing operations as it continues to maximise the opportunities afforded by investment in a modular, scalable aluminium architecture. The application of this industry leading technology as resulted in the all-new XF being 80kg lighter than its nearest competitor and 190kgs* lighter than its predecessor - a car that redefined Jaguar’s design language and resulted in it becoming the most awarded Jaguar model in history. In addition to the Castle Bromwich announcement today, Jaguar Land Rover has also confirmed that it will double the operational footprint of its Advanced Design and Engineering Centre in Whitley, Coventry. This multi-million pound investment will house highly-skilled product development engineers and will support the company’s creation of high technology, ultra-low emission vehicles. To keep the UK and Jaguar Land Rover at the forefront of global innovation, the firm is also investing in the £150 million National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC) which will open in Spring 2017, providing a state-ofthe-art technology hub for Jaguar Land Rover’s advanced research team and collaborative partners from the supply chain and academia.

HEATED: Philip Hollobone MP led the debate on religious slaughter in Westminster Hall where speakers from across the political spectrum gave their views

The great big halal debate

MP argues that there was antisemitism and Islamophobia ‘lurking’ behind some arguments against religious slaughter without stunning the animal

The latest parliamentary discussion on the future of the stunning of all animals, before religious slaughter, led to a heated three-hour debate in Westminster Hall last week. Calls to legislate the practice have seen MPs put forward robust defences of kosher and halal religious slaughtering methods, sparking a debate in which more than a dozen speakers from across the political spectrum gave their views. The debate on Monday

politically driven’ in its arguments against religious slaughter. Labour MP Shabana Mahmood said there had been a degree of hysteria around the issue. “Religious minorities rightly feel picked on and scrutinised, as if to say their way of life was cruel. It’s an unfair characterisation,” she said. Currently 80 per cent of animals killed in halal slaughters are pre-stunned. Conservative MP Philip Hollobone, opening the debate, said he believed 23rd February was called there was an ‘overwhelming after a British Veterinary number of people who want Association-backed petition to see non-stun slaughter calling for a ban on non-stun ended in this country’. slaughter generated 100,000 Campaigners’ concerns signatures in nine months. related to animal welfare, he However, politicians said, and were not prompted highlighted a similar petition, by opposition to religious in favour of continuing beliefs. animal had been stunned or not, and whether the food was kosher or halal. But Conservative MP for South East Cambridgeshire - Sir James Paice said it would be seen as ‘racist’ if labels differentiated between meat items produced as a result of religious slaughter and those that were not. Sir James Paice, added that his visit to a halal abattoir had convinced him that post-cut stunning – when an animal was rendered senseless after being shot with a bolt through the head immediately after having its throat cut – could have a ‘significant’ impact on religious slaughter. It would be a compromise that may suit most parties in the process, he said. Mike Freer, Finchley and Golders Green MP, said he believed the public was ‘completely divided’ on the topic, and that there was antisemitism and Islamophobia ‘lurking’ behind some arguments against religious slaughter. MPs voted only on whether they agreed that the issue had been debated, rather than on whether they were in favour of religious slaughter or not. George Eustice, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for farming and food, repeated the government's preference for prestunning. He added: “The government have no plans at all to ban religious slaughter. The Prime Minister has been absolutely clear that there is no intention to ban religious slaughter. However, everyone agrees that we need good enforcement of our existing legislation.” Mr Eustice said the government would begin a series of unannounced, random inspections of

British slaughterhouses. Dr Shuja Shafi, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: “The British Veterinary Association (BVA) should stop fanning the hysteria around religious slaughter and ‘get real’ on the true priority of animal welfare. “If the BVA are genuinely concerned about animal welfare, we need to hear what they are doing about the duty of veterinarians to ensure the welfare of animals in the slaughterhouses, at all times, given the abuses reported.” Maulana Yunus Dughala on behalf of the Halal Monitoring Committee UK says: “How many members of the public, or indeed, Members of Parliament are actually aware of the greater abuse and longerterm suffering of animals before they reach the slaughterhouse? How many have bothered to find out about the abuses that are occurring in non-religious slaughterhouses, including those labelled as organic? “The UK’s largest animal rights group, Animal Aid, which has secretly filmed inside eleven UK abattoirs since 2009, has found ten of these breaking the law. How many of the investigated abattoirs were for non-stunned halal meat? Only one - the other nine abuses Animal Aid recorded were at slaughterhouses for nonhalal slaughter.” Maulana Yunus Dughala says the matter is less about stunning and non-stunning, halal, kosher or nonreligious, but about having good robust standards in place with regulations of those standards. “It is about providing the resources for the MHS (Meat Hygiene Service) to have enough staff that can monitor and observe the welfare of animals across all slaughterhouses. It is about introducing CCTV cameras in abattoirs as an extra assurance for animal welfare,” she said

Halal and Kosher explained Muslims require food to be 'halal' and Jews 'shechita'. Both involve methods of slaughter that mean the animal has to be conscious before it is killed, that is not stunned first, which is the usual method in British slaughterhouses. These are two religions which place great value on observing dietary laws and is part of what identifies a Muslim as a Muslim or a Jew as a Jew, not just to outsiders but to themselves. Muslims believe the rules of slaughtering animals derive from the Qu'ran; Jews from book of Deuteronomy. The name for the halal method of slaughter is 'dhabiha' and one of the certifying bodies for halal food - the Halal Food Authority, does allow electrical stunning for sheep and poultry as long as the animal doesn't die. Animals are killed with a swift incision to the throat from a razor sharp blade. The animal must never see another animal being slaughtered nor must it ever see the blade being sharpened. They must be checked before slaughter to ensure they are healthy and given clean water to drink. Then they are turned to face Mecca, the prayer is recited, the jugular vein and carotid arteries are cut – leaving the spinal cord intact – and the blood drained from the carcass. Shechita requires the animal has to be conscious and is carried out by a shoket – which involves a super-sharp blade called a chalaf being used to sever the throat. The blood is then drained. Campaigners against religious slaughter argue that stunning the animal first is kinder. Different methods are used: gas stunning, which slowly renders the creature unconscious (birds and pigs are actually killed like this too); percussive stunning, used for cattle and sheep, in which a captive bolt is used to render it unconscious before it's hoisted into the air by one leg and stuck by the slaughterman; and electrical stunning, which involves passing a current through the brain. For sheep, this means shocking them with tongs on their heads; for birds, it involves hanging them by the feet and dipping them in an electrified water bath before the belt moves them on to a mechanical neckcutter.

Eye-opening experience A local optometrist says he hopes to set up an eye surgery in one of the most povertystricken areas of Sudan in the future as he prepares for his first aid mission later this month. Ishtiyak Mahomed, from Thornton, will be travelling to the African nation on 15th March as part of a convoy from the Mercy Mission charity. There, he will visit refugee camps in the area of Kassala, which is home to more than 150,000 people, and deliver food to hungry families. Having already raised £2,000 in donations, Mr Mahomed says the aid distribution is just one part of his trip with a long term vision already being constructed in his mind. “I want to see if there is anything I can do from a surgical point of view to help the local people and then longterm set up a project to get better eye-care in the area,” he said. “For children to have a good education they need good eyesight yet the services are just not available in some places of the world such as the refugee camps. “If I can help the children in these areas achieve something

by giving them access to better eye care I want to do that. “Hopefully, I will be able to go back with a clear picture of what I can do in the future from a surgical standpoint in the area.” Mr Mahomed says he also thinks the trip will be an ‘eyeopener’ to what ‘real poverty is like’ and was looking forward to the experience. “I grew up in South Africa before moving to the UK so I have seen what real poverty looks like first hand on Soweto,” he said. “To see it again now will be an eye-opener. I don’t think I will be able to actually comprehend the extent of the problem until I get to Sudan and spend the five days with the charity.” He added. “I am already planning on going back. Charity is an important part of my life and my faith so if there is something I can do to help, I will try my best to do it.” The camp Mr Mahomed will be visiting has existed for the past 40 years with humanitarian aid in the area in short supply. New surgery turns brown eyes blue BLUE EYES: Model-turned-actress Ashwariya Rai Bachchan caught the attention of film-makers due to her unique blue eyes

Brown eyes can, of course, be beautiful yet if it is not the shade you wanted then there is little you can do other than wear contact lenses right? Wrong. Now, a new laser surgery has been invented, which researchers and developers state can alter the appearance of brown eyes, to make them blue. According to the developers, we all have blue eyes underneath. The treatment therefore consists of ‘disrupting’ the top layers of pigment, causing the body to start enacting its own gradual tissue-removal process. The patient sits in a frame, much like the ones used in sightcorrecting laser surgeries. A

different kind of laser treatment is then applied. According to the website, for a week after the surgery, the irises will appear darker, but then will gradually fade to blue within about four weeks after that. The procedure is not available to the general public yet, as it is still undergoing various medical evaluations, but it may become accessible to all of us in the near future.

Two jailed for ‘wicked’ Madinah manslaughter of child

Author dedicates 10 years of his life to create a photographic journey of the Hijrah Route This eminent work is the culmination of an epic journey along the Hijrah Route by esteemed academic Dr. Abdullah Alkadi, Vice President, University of Dammam. Incredibly, even after 1,400 years, the Hijrah Route has been traced accurately using sources as varied as Ottoman period maps, historic texts and oral accounts handed down through generations among locals, as well as state-of-theart GPS technologies. Dr. Alkadi dedicated 10 years of his life to the creation of ‘Makkah to Madinah’, which is eagerly anticipated by a UK audience following its initial release in Saudi Arabia. Written in both Arabic and English, this recto-verso book illustrates the Prophet's (blessings and peace be upon him) Hijrah Route in exquisite detail, identifying landmarks and locations where verses of the Qur’an were first revealed. Using metallic inks and hand drawn maps, Londonbased agency Inspiral Design has created a premium aesthetic to complement the beautiful illustrations and photography within this musthave book. Dr. Abdullah Alkadi, a descendent of the noble Bani Hashim clan, is a scholar of religious and quantitative sciences. He has spent countless hours and untold days traversing over thirty thousand miles to trace every step that the Prophet (pbuh) took. Dr. Alkadi explains: “Makkah to Madinah is the culmination of several years of research driven by the simple desire to determine as precisely as possible the exact route of the Hijrah. “In the course of this study, I have conducted dozens of field expeditions, collecting data, recording GPS coordinates, identifying landmarks, calculating distances, and covering as much of the entire route as possible

by foot. “I have also examined every available resource from Hadith and Seerah literature and narrations, to historical documents, maps from the eighteenth century to the present. I have also conducted extensive interviews with local residents to glean information handed down through generations. “After analysing, synthesising, and crosschecking the information from this research, I have by the grace of God realised my original goal: to determine as precisely as possible the exact route of the Prophet’s Hijrah.” Photographer Peter Sanders who assisted Dr. Alkadi’s book, began his career in the mid 1960s as one of London's key photographers of rock musicians. His pictures of Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, The Who and many others performing are classics of the genre. In 1970, he set off for India, cameras in hand. He travelled for seven months. This trip became a spiritual odyssey that led him onto Morocco and thereafter to the Holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, where he photographed the Hajj, at a time when few professional photographers had access to Islam's holiest sanctuaries. Continuing to travel far and wide, Peter Sanders has built up a photographic archive of well over a quarter of a million transparencies from forty countries around the world. His first book 'In The Shade of the Tree' (now in its second reprint) gives a wonderful insight into the diversity of the Muslim cultures around the world whilst his second book 'The Art of Integration, Islam in England's green and pleasant land', shows an alternative picture of Muslims integrated within British society.

WICKED: Polly Chowdhury (left) and her lover Kiki Muddar were convicted of killing Chowdhury’s daughter, Ayesha

Mother and lesbian lover found guilty over daughter’s death A 35-year-old woman and her sadistic lover who created an online fantasy world have been convicted of killing her eight-year-old daughter. The girl's mother Polly Chowdhury, 35, and lover Kiki Muddar were convicted of her manslaughter, but cleared of murder, and sentenced to 13 years and 18 years in prison respectively on Friday 6th March. When police arrived at the family's east London flat in August 2013, they found little Ayesha Ali dead and her mother having tried to commit suicide. Ayesha had more than 50 injuries on her body. A note, written by the mother, confessed to killing Ayesha by smothering her with a pillow and also declared her love for a man named ‘Jimmy’. The Old Bailey heard that Chowdhury’s partner, 43-year-old Muddar, of Green Lane, Ilford, used Facebook updates and text messages to poison Chowdhury against her own daughter. Officers sifted through more than 100,000 texts, social media messages and interactions to untangle a complicated cast of characters, the jury heard. One alias Muddar created was spiritual guide ‘Skyman’, whom she used to convince Chowdhury into believing that Ayesha had ‘bad blood’ and needed to be disciplined to get the ‘evil spirits’ out of her. Through a combination of painstaking investigation, technical know-how and determination over 18 months, police managed to prove none of them existed. The jury also heard how, throughout their relationship, Muddar told Chowdhury that Ayesha was ‘evil’ and bombarded her with more than 40,000 texts with messages

such as: “You have no right to ever influenced his wife in his absence. love or like your evil daughter.” Post-mortem examinations Muddar even blamed Ayesha for revealed Ayesha died as a result of making her fictional cancer worse. damage to the head from a blow or In a recorded phone conversation blows, on 29th August 2013. with a friend the month before the She had other injuries including killing, Muddar described Ayesha as carpet burns and a bite mark from ‘pure evil’ and a ‘witch’ and her mother. threatened to drown her in the bath. Places of worship ‘need more protection’ PROVOCATION: CCTV footage provided by Westgate Mosque shows members of the Britain First group entering the place of worship last year

Britain First members who marched into Mosques in Bradford will not face any charges, the Crown Prosecution Service has revealed, sparking a call for greater protection for places of worship. Representatives from the farright group entered the sites in May last year where they handed out British army bibles, leaflets, and told people to convert to Christianity. Despite calls for action to be taken by the authorities, it was last week decided that there was ‘no criminal case to answer’. Superintendent Vince Firth, partnerships lead for Bradford District Police, said: “We thoroughly investigated the incidents involving Britain First in Bradford and presented an evidence file to the CPS. “Each complainant has been personally visited by a police officer and updated about the result of the investigation. The actions of Britain First caused great offence to many, but the people of Bradford responded in the right way - by acting with the utmost dignity. “Together, we continue to provide support and offer reassurance through our Neighbourhood Policing patrols and council warden teams.” Vice-president of Bradford’s Council for Mosques, Zulfiqar Karim, said the decision highlighted a need for new legislation to be introduced to help protect the religious places. Having spoke with officers following the ‘invasion’ last year he also provided CCTV footage of the group at the Westgate Mosque site. In that video, members of the Britain First group were seen walking inside the building with their shoes on, filming their actions and leaving bibles on site.

Calls for new legislation following mosque invaders PROTECTION: Vice-president of the city’s Council for Mosques, Zulfiqar Karim, says places of worship need laws to be introduced to help protect them from repeat instances

Mr Karim added that he would like to see the Home Secretary, Theresa May, review current laws to ensure repeat incidents are avoided. “At the moment there are no laws which protect places of worship from these types of incidents but it is my understanding that such legislation did exist around 200 years ago,” he said. “That law was changed for one reason or another but it is now time that we revisit that. “We would like to see the Home Secretary look at the current legislation, of which, at this moment in time, provides no adequate protection.” He continued: “It is like walking into a person’s home when

uninvited. These people are just exploiting the loopholes in the law to go somewhere (places of worship) they should not be. “It is a very difficult time for Muslims at the moment but it isn’t just Muslims who need this extra protection. All places of worship should be respected in the same way.” The Britain First group arrived at the mosque on 10th May and also visited the home of former Lord Mayor, Cllr Khadim Hussain. Despite no worshippers being present at the mosque at the time of the visit, Mr Karim adds that he fears what would happen if such an incident did occur. “We understand that there has been a thorough investigation by the Police and Crown Prosecution Service but the people who came here were very smart in their actions,” he said. “It is what I would label provocation and that isn’t right. People should not be able to go into a place of worship just to get a reaction from innocent members of the public. “What if there was private prayers being read or a congregation inside the mosque. I fear that if something like this happens again, there might be a different reaction.”

Lioness kept as pet in Pakistan gives birth to five cubs

It's a baby boom for the owner of a pet lioness in central Pakistan. The African lioness named Queen has given birth to five healthy cubs - double the usual two-to-three-cub litters among lions. Owner Malik Fazal Abbas said he has had 4-year-old Queen since she was two-months-old. She mated with a male lion that Abbas also keeps at his home in the city of Multan. The pair has already had a litter of two cubs, now nine months old. Abbas, a cotton and mangogrower, says he has a license from the Pakistani Wildlife Department to keep lions as pets - a dream he has since he was a boy. He’s not the only exotic pet owner in Pakistan. The tiger is a symbol of the ruling party of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and some supporters keep tigers that they bring out during election campaigns. "You know, it's brave to hug lions," said Abbas from his home, which

has a separate section for his animals. “But keeping wildlife as pets is not a hobby easy to afford," he added. His lion and lioness each eat 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of meat a day. The nine-months-old cubs each consume around nine kilograms (20 pounds) of meat daily. Abbas said his family was initially uneasy with the lions but later grew more comfortable, even feedings the cubs from milk bottles. He has a caretaker for the animals, and claims he follows all precautions and safety measures to ensure his lions harm no one. His neighbours often come to visit the lions with their families. A Pakistani wildlife department official, Ghulam Muhammad, said it was legal to keep the animals as pets, as long as they do not endanger anyone. "We make sure in our visits that the owners have all the protections in place," Muhammad said.

Former Bulls owner claims victory against administrator

RELIEVED: Khan was forced to walk away from Bradford Bulls after his regime’s company was liquidated

Landmark case could rewrite history of rugby club

INNOCENT: Omar Khan says he now hopes to have an independent liquidator launch an official investigation into the administration

After being branded a ‘thief’ by some, Omar Khan says it was a ‘huge relief’ when a High Court ruled in his favour last week as he continues the fight to clear his name following his ownership of Bradford Bulls. The Rugby League outfit were within 30 minutes of ceasing to exist when Mr Khan purchased the club via OK Bulls Ltd in August 2012. Unfortunately in 2014, the company entered administration owing £1million. Mr Khan said that the company was solvent when he handed it over and it was difficult to see how the administrator had come to this decision as he had not counted Mr Khan’s investment fully. The local restaurateur has always claimed that most of the money owed was in fact his investment and that the club should not have been affected. The original report by Leeds-based administrator David Wilson stated Mr Khan had invested just £375,000 whilst in actual fact the figure, as the High Court confirmed, was much closer to the million mark. During the administration process, any creditor is able to call for a creditor’s meeting with the amount invested by each creditor equating to that person’s voting power. Mr Khan arranged this meeting at his own expense. As the majority shareholder his votes would have determined the outcome of the meeting. However, the Rugby Football League were also given a vote after claiming, the day before, that they were owed £900,000, something the High Court ruled was wrong, adding that the RFL should not have had any say at all. Mr Khan says that a well known creditor, who will be named shortly, voted on the side of the administrator, so that the administration ended and an investigation, which is what Mr Khan wanted to propose by appointing an independent liquidator, could not take place Mr Khan is now attempting to rearrange a creditors meeting where he is optimistic of his proposals being passed, without the influence of the RFL’s vote, and the possibility of a full investigation being launched into the administration by having a liquidator appointed. Speaking about his victory at court, he said: “It was a relief to hear the correct verdict. This club should never have gone down. It wasn’t in debt, and the million pounds was mine not the clubs. “I have been called a thief and accused of so much over the past year but this ruling is just the start of the truth coming out. I have even been made to look like a liar by the administration when all the evidence was there to prove otherwise. “We are currently seeking to reschedule that key creditors meeting and are in talks with the administration’s solicitors. “I am hopeful of putting my proposals forward and having the chance to see a full investigation into the administration launched.” If a meeting can be arranged, the administration will write to all the creditors, including Mr Khan, to ask them to return and put forward their proposals. Mr Khan will have much more power in the meeting without the RFL, and he says his main objective is to have an independent liquidator appointed to investigate ‘everything’ that happened. “I want to completely clear my name and show that the old regime did nothing wrong,” Mr Khan added.

CRUEL: Amanda Hutton was jailed for 15 years in 2013

Student wins national engineering prize

Police ‘could not prevent’ Hamzah death TRAGIC: Hamzah Khan was left to starve to death by his mother, Amanda Hutton, in 2009, whilst his body was found two years later

IPCC rules West Yorkshire officers not at fault

The shocking death of a fouryear-old in Bradford could not have been prevented or predicted by police, the forces watchdog has ruled. Hamza Khan’s body was found decomposed in a cot at the family home in 2011 after he was left to starve to death in 2009 by his mother, Amanda Hutton. Hutton was jailed for 15 years in October 2013 after her trial at Bradford Crown Court where it was also revealed that a range of agencies, including the police, had contact with her family yet none spotted the dangers to Hamzah. Police previously had extensive contact with the mother and her family as she was a victim of repeated domestic violence. In a statement provided by the Independent Police Complaint’s Commission (IPCC), it was revealed that the child’s body was only found after a community officer made contact with Hutton. The commission added that there was no misconduct by officers in the case yet added that they should have referred themselves to the watchdog upon the discovery of the body. IPCC commissioner Cindy Butts said: “The fact that this was not reported to the IPCC until

after a serious case review had been completed in 2013 meant that the process was completed without any independent scrutiny of police action.” Assistant Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, Russ Foster, added: “We acknowledge the findings of the IPCC report following the tragic death of Hamzah Khan. “More recently the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) have provided further guidance for making referrals, but at the time of this incident, having regard to the circumstances known and this statutory guidance in relation IPCC referrals, we did not believe there was requirement to make a referral. “What is in no doubt is the actions of officers and in particular the tenacity and dedication of a PCSO in uncovering the terrible abuse Amanda Hutton put her children through and who is currently serving a 15 year jail sentence. “The level of professionalism by all officers involved in the investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of Hamzah Khan was found to be without fault or failure by the IPCC.”

The fight against Ebola was taken to the classroom last week as an engineering student from Baildon took first prize for her pop-up isolation unit design. Emily Nar, a Year 11 student at Titus Salt School, developed the ‘Pop-I’ as her entry to the Talent 2030 competition – a nationwide engineering competition for girls. The specification was to develop a model which would help tackle a 21st century issue with entrants submitting designs for their respected age categories. Students from Essex to the

Highlands submitted designs, yet it was the West Yorkshire representative who clinched top prize. As well as picking up the £500 prize, Emily was presented with exciting opportunities to be mentored by an engineer, to visit the Rolls Royce factory in Derby and to showcase her invention at The Big Bang - a national fair for young scientists and engineers on 14th March in Birmingham. The 15-year-old has also been shortlisted from nearly 1,600 applicants for a prestigious

Explaining how she got involved with the project, the aspiring aerospace engineer said: “We did the competition as something fun during the last days of the Christmas term. “There was a lot of research that went into it including a trip to the Leeds General infirmary to interview a doctor about what the design would have to include. “It was a lot of hard work but I honestly don’t know why more girls don’t get involved with engineering or science. “It’s such a fun way to make a really good living and it’s the most important work going on in the

“Emily is a great student and excels in a lot of her subjects,” he said. “We are very big on these lessons here so for her to be successful is great for Emily and the school.” Deputy Head, Simon Hawkins added: “Science,

Heartache Legal challenge dismissed on Britain’s visa law requirement for British half of couple to earn more than £18,600

PROUD: Physics teacher, Mr James Reid, says Emily’s accomplishments are more than ‘deserved’ after seeing her clinch top prize

The Court of Appeal’s dismissal of a legal challenge to Home Office rules for UK citizens who want their overseas spouses to live with them in Britain, has caused uproar. Affecting more than 3,600 families, the immigration law requires the British half of a couple to earn more than £18,600 before they can apply for their non EU partner to join them in Britain. The visa applications of 3,641 families have been on hold since 5th July last year while the appeal court ruled on the legality of a new Home Office minimum income threshold of £18,600 for sponsoring a foreign spouse. The appeal court ruling is expected to clear the way for the Home Office to refuse most of those applications. Campaigners say that many thousands more families who were put off from applying by the £18,600 income threshold since it was introduced in 2012 will also be affected. They say that the families who remain separated include British citizens in full-time employment on the minimum wage who are too poor to enjoy the right to a family life. Ruth Grove-White, policy director of the Migrants' Rights Network, which has been campaigning for the right of British citizens to have their family life respected, said: "This judgment will be devastating for the families who continue to be needlessly separated across borders. Many UK residents and British citizens have had their lives put on hold for over a year, often with no chance of seeing their loved husbands, wives or children during that time." Grove-White said that almost half the working population of Britain earned less than the required £18,600. "These rules are a shocking infringement of the right to family life. Being able to start a family in your own country should not be subject to the amount of money you make." The appeal court ruling followed a legal challenge by the home secretary, Theresa May, to a high court judgment last July, which said the £18,600 was "onerous" and "unjustified". Mr Justice Blake then ruled that the financial requirements amounted to "a disproportionate interference with a genuine spousal relationship" and suggested that a threshold of £13,400, which was more in line with the national minimum wage, would be more appropriate. But the three appeal court judges said that his analysis and conclusion that the income rules breached the human rights of the British husbands, wives or partners was not correct, so the rules were lawful. The case was brought on behalf of two

British citizens, Abdul Majid and Shabana Javed, who both live in Birmingham and a refugee, MM, who has the right to remain in Britain, who are married to spouses who live outside Europe. Lord Justice Aikens, one of the three appeal court judges, said he was very conscious of the evidence submitted that only 301 of the 422 occupations listed in the 2011 UK earnings data had annual average earnings over £18,600. "But, given the work that was done on behalf of the secretary of state to analyse the effect of the immigration of nonEuropean Economic Area partners and dependent children on the benefits system, the level of income needed to minimise dependence on the state for families where non-EEA partners enter the UK, and what I regard as a rational conclusion on the link between better income and greater chances of integration, my conclusion is that the secretary of state's judgment cannot be impugned,” he said. "She has discharged the burden of demonstrating that the interference was both the minimum necessary and strikes a fair balance between the interests of the groups concerned and the community in general." The judge said it was not up to the court to impose its own view on what the minimum income threshold should be, unless it was irrational, unjust or unfair. A Home Office impact assessment published in June 2012 estimated that the chosen income threshold would prevent 17,800 family visas being granted every year. The Home Office has staunchly defended their policy, and did so in the Court of Appeal earlier this month, justifying the financial requirement as being part of an effort to help immigrants to integrate. The immigration minister, James Brokenshire, said he was delighted by the appeal court ruling: "We welcome those who wish to make a life in the UK with their family, work hard and make a contribution, but family life must not be established in the UK at the taxpayer's expense and family migrants must be able to integrate.” The changes that came into force on 9th July 2012 stipulate that the British spouse has to earn an annual income of £18,600 (and show that he/she has been earning that amount for at least six months) in order to sponsor his/her non-EEA spouse for a visa. The foreign spouse’s income is not taken into account. The financial threshold increases if they have children also in need of sponsorship.

When questioned as to why he doesn’t do much work in Bollywood, he said, “Bollywood to me is very unprofessional. Everything is last minute here. ‘Abhi gana chahiye, kal banake doge?’ is what people want here. That is not how a song is made.” He went on to add: “Sometimes my team and I take two or three months to make a song. I have got a name to protect, so a lot of planning goes into it. “I’ve made a couple of songs in the past but wasn’t satisfied with the music and so I didn’t go ahead with releasing it. “I have done this film because I believe the production is very good. Jazzy also said that it took a lot of time to make 'Zaalim Dilli' song from the film. “It took them six months to make the beat of this song. “Then they sent it to Hard Kaur (Tarun Singh). Then she changed the rap and then even Japinder Kaur (film’s director) gave her inputs for the rap. Then I did my vocals again. “So when something takes time to make, the result shows. I’m very happy the way the song has turned out,” said Jazzy.

Hrithik Roshan going NUDE for Ashutosh Gowariker’s film? Heard the latest? Hrithik Roshan, the Greek god of Bollywood who plays main lead in upcoming biggie ‘Mohenjo Daro’ from renowned filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, is expected to go nude for a sequence, a la Aamir Khan in Raj Kumar Hirani’s ‘PK’. The buzz doing the rounds in the industry is that Hrithik Roshan’s act of going for bare minimum may be something more than Aamir Khan, who had gone out of his way for ‘PK’.

The buzz has already sent the temperatures soaring in the industry about Mohenjo Daro and Hrithik Roshan’s’ female fan following is going ga ga over it. Of course, they do not want this mouthwatering prospect of seeing their matinee idol nude on the celluloid go away. But reality is slightly different. In fact, nudity is only part true. Hrithik Roshan is going to don a bare minimum for some sequences (now, you can take that to be almost nude) in Mohenjo Daro

and it’s a fact. In fact, the film depicts the life and culture of Harappa Civilization, which existed around 2500 BC in and around the Mohenjo Daro area of Sindh and Gujarat. At that particular time in history, there was hardly anything called fashion industry. In general, the people wore cloths to hide their private parts and nothing more than that. That automatically comes to being in almost nude. Hrithik Roshan, who is essaying the character of

that era in the film, will similarly don garments of that era. Now, it is during one of those sequences that that Hrithik Roshan will be donning the bare minimum, which can come to being almost nude. Then, there is censor board factor too. It is not entirely in the hands of filmmakers to depict the scene in its brutality or reality and they will have to take into account the permissibility of the same from the board.

Everything changes when Meera is attacked by a group of unknown men after leaving a party late at night. Although she manages to escape, the experience leaves

her traumatised. Feeling guilty for not being there to protect her, Arjun tries to get their relationship back on track by organising for them to go on a luxurious holiday in the desert. Stopping at a roadside cafe on National Highway 10 en route, the couple witness a young girl being attacked by a group of men and Arjun decides to intervene, unaware that his actions will put both of their lives in mortal danger.

on revenge, but it's 15 years before he finds out the identity of the man who pulled the trigger, after which his journey to avenge his family's deaths begins. Directed by the great Sriram Raghavan, whose previous films are known for their edgy characters and gripping action sequences, Badlapur is a tense thriller where the we are asked to consider what own reactions would be to such a terrible situation and thus, our own morality. The film which is largely based on revenge (Badla) and

is about a man who sets out to take revenge after being wronged and undergoes a transition during the course of the story, leading to `badla’. Those familiar with Mumbai are aware that there is a station named Badlapur on the Central Railway. It’s heard that, Badlapur used to be one of the stations where the trains would change tracks. This aspect has massive role to play in the film as the station features in the backdrop when the plot undergoes a change, hence the birth of the title of this film.

East Shopping Centre opens doors in ‘style’ ore than 12,000 shoppers headed down to London’s latest fashion hotspot last weekend as Europe’s first purpose-built boutique Asian shopping mall, officially opened its doors on Saturday 14th March. Inaugurating the East Shopping Centre was Chief Guest, Lyn Brown MP for West Ham who cut the ribbon at midday, making way for hundreds of eager shoppers, to get inside and have their first look around. Ms Brown met with business owners and visitors, who came in from all across the country, including Leicester, Huddersfield and Birmingham, specifically for the launch. Other dignitaries attending the launch were Cllr Rohima Rahman, Cllr Ellie Robingson, Cllr Mukesh Patel and Cllr Hanif Abdulmuhit. Visitors were enraptured with Moses Baig, heartthrob of Sky’s hit reality TV series Desi Rascals, who showed off his music skills at the DJ deck, while a flurry of excited fans eagerly waited for autographs and pictures. He was later joined by his older brother Anj Baig and Feryal Javid Khan, who also star in the popular reality show that follows the lives of South Asians living in London. Bob Popat, a partner at ACR Investments, which is force behind East Shopping Centre said: “The launch of East Shopping Centre is incredibly proud and exciting for us. “As the first of its kind in Europe, we are confident that East Shopping Centre will enhance the already vibrant shopping district of Green Street. “It’s wonderful to have the support of local politicians, like Lyn Brown MP as well as the community, who were wonderful in welcoming us at our launch.” A raffle was drawn on Sunday afternoon that gave away a luxury trip to Dubai, a £1,000 gift voucher to spend at East Shopping Centre and saw two people win iPad Mini 3’s. The first 100 people through the door also received vouchers to the food court worth £10. All

proceeds raised from the raffle were donated to Masoom, a local charity that supports vulnerable women and children around the world. Kids flocked to have their faces painted, while dhol players, DJs, and so much more, kept visitors entertained as they shopped. The Met Police were also on hand, engaging with visitors, talking about safety and community. The vibrant new centre, which features custom-made fittings imported from across Europe, is anchored by The Souk, which

comprises of smaller shops retailing everything from stunning costume jewellery to mobile phone accessories. The impressive, high-quality shopping centre is built on a one-acre site of a former bus depot and hopes to build on Green Street’s important cultural heritage. Junaid Jamshed

launches Summer Collection at Janan

Caste away T

he recent case of Chandhok and another –v- Tirkey suggests that discrimination on the grounds of caste can now amount to an aspect of race discrimination prohibited by British discrimination law. ‘Caste’ is not currently a ‘protected characteristic’ in which discrimination is illegal under the Equality Act 2010 (“the Act”). However, the appellate Court in this case have controversially interpreted the Act to include ‘caste’ as an aspect of ‘race’ discrimination despite the Act explicitly requiring that an Order must be passed by a Government Minister to do this. Furthermore, a full public consultation by Parliament is currently underway to identify any specific issues that need to be addressed and prepare guidance on prospective caste discrimination for the law to be effective. Caste discrimination is unlikely to be prohibited under the Act until at least summer 2015. In this case, Ms Tirkey worked as a domestic worker. Her caste is the Christian Adivasi, which is recognised as being the lowest point of almost every socio-economic indicator, akin to the Dalits, the so-called ‘untouchables’. Ms Tirkey claimed that Mr and Mrs Chandok had subjected her to discrimination due to her low caste status. Her claim involved £175,000 in unpaid wages. She worked extremely long hours with only one day off in the total four years she worked there. Mr and Mrs Chandok argued that ‘caste’ did not fall within the definition of ‘race’ discrimination and the fact that Parliament had not yet activated their power to amend the Act to include ‘caste’ was a clear indication that ‘caste’ was deliberately omitted. The Judge however held that there was no comprehensive and exhaustive

definition of ‘race’ provided by the Act, and found authority in previous case law that discrimination on the grounds of descent was in fact race discrimination. As Ms Tirkey’s caste was inherited and immutable (and therefore established by her descent) it came within the protected characteristic of ‘race’ under the Act. Without any set legislation and guidance in place, this could open up the floodgates for litigation to determine a number of issues. To begin with, there is considerable uncertainty as to the precise definition and boundaries of ‘caste’ with some caste considerations involving no element of ‘descent’. The term ‘caste’ used to identify a number of different concepts, notably varna (a Hindu religious caste system), jati (an occupational caste system) and biraderi (often referred to as a clan system). Not only will this case lead to implications in the employment field, the case could lead to all kinds of civil actions, such as compensation to injury of feelings; aggravated damages for malicious behaviour; and claims for discrimination in the provision of services. Without any coherent basis on which to base discrimination on the grounds of caste, it is uncertain what organisations have to do to protect themselves against claims of discrimination and whether certain traditions such as holding an event for Navratri will be classed as discrimination. Those who were expecting a radical statement of new law will be disappointed as this decision could make new legislation unnecessary. However, to provide certainty and acquire organisations to implement sufficient measures, the Government may still need to define the scope of caste discrimination.

Tax evasion crackdown Tax evasion in the UK is set to be challenged more vigorously than ever before after new laws were unveiled last week as part of the budget statement. Danny Alexander, second-incommand to Chancellor George Osborne, announced the new measures one day after Osborne promised to deliver tougher action on tax evaders in his final budget before the May national election. The laws will make large corporations criminally liable for failing to prevent economic crime within their organisations. “We are going even further,” Alexander said. “We’re making it a crime if companies fail to put in place measures to stop economic crime happening in

their organisations.” Evading tax using offshore arrangements would also be made a ‘strict liability offence’, meaning that pleading ignorance could no longer be used as a defence against criminal prosecution. The government is counting on raising billions of pounds by reducing tax evasion to help it erase a hefty budget deficit. Last month, in the wake of a scandal surrounding HSBC, Alexander said he was planning new laws on the issue. Tax evasion is already illegal in Britain but the new laws will also make it explicit that those assisting tax evaders will be open to punishment. Tax avoidance is not illegal.

SUPERCAR: The new high-performance Porsche 911 GT3 RS accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.3 seconds

New Porsche 911 GT3 RS

The definitive track car for the everyday car lover Blurring, once again, the boundaries between road-going sports cars and race-track cars, comes a vehicle with the maximum degree of motorsport technology currently possible in a street-legal 911, yet retaining supreme suitability for everyday driving. The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS has undergone extensive modifications to the drive system, aerodynamics and lightweight design enhance performance beyond that of even the 911 GT3. Indeed, the RS has set a lap time around the 14 mile Nürburgring Nordschleife of 7 min 20 secs; an achievement which also trumps the historic record value of the Carrera

GT super sports car of just under 7 min and 29 seconds. As a consequence, this clearly qualifies the 911 GT3 RS as the benchmark in its class – directly at its launch. As befits the tradition at Porsche, motorsport expertise is the reason for this superior performance. The 911 GT3 RS is powered by a 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine with 500 hp (368 kW) of power and 460 Newton metres of torque, combined with a specially developed PDK transmission. The engine, which has the largest displacement and most power of any naturally-aspirated power unit with direct fuel injection in the 911 family, accelerates the high-performance sports car from 0

to 62 mph in 3.3 seconds and on to 124 mph (200 km/h) in 10.9 seconds. Combined NEDC fuel consumption is 22.2 mpg. Functions such as de-clutching by the ‘paddle neutral’ facility – which is comparable to depressing the clutch with a conventional manual gearbox – and speed limiting by the ‘Pit Speed’ centre console button have been customised for motorsport use. These features give drivers more freedom in terms of exploiting the driving dynamics, while also providing them with more assistance when driving on a race circuit. The 911 GT3 RS is also a masterpiece of intelligent lightweight design. For the first time,

the roof panel is made of magnesium; carbon fibre is used for the engine and luggage compartment lids, and other lightweight components are made of alternative materials. This makes the RS model around 10 kg lighter than the 911 GT3. In addition, the lightweight roof lowers the sports car's centre of gravity which improves its excellent lateral dynamic reponses. The distinctive, wide-arched bodyshell is derived from the 911 Turbo, and it signifies its status as a race track-oriented driving machine with a number of RS-specific aerodynamic add-on components. The front spoiler lip, which extends nearly to the road, and the large rear wing, reinforce its dominant look. The front luggage compartment lid features a unique contoured surface structure, a strip-like 30 cm wide recess which runs upwards through the middle of the CFRP bonnet and the magnesium roof. This styling cue is reminiscent of the

similar feature that was a tradition on the front lid of classic 911 models with air-cooled engines; today, it identifies the two largest lightweight components of the 911 GT3 RS. Another striking characteristic are the unique front wheel arch air vents that extend into the upper section of the wings – just like a pure-bred race car. Again, as is traditional at Porsche, form follows function and this feature increases downforce on the front axle. The chassis of the 911 GT3 RS has been tuned for maximum driving dynamics and precision. Rear-axle steering and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus with fully variable rear limited slip differential increase agility and dynamics, and the wider front and rear track widths enable even higher roll stability than in the 911 GT3. In addition, the 911 GT3 RS features the widest tyres of any 911 model as standard. The result: even more agile turn-in characteristics and even higher cornering speeds.

Roaring R8 Continued from page 45

The interior design of the 911 GT3 RS with Alcantara elements is based on the current 911 GT3. Another key feature are the sports seats, which are now based on the carbonfibre ‘bucket’ seats of the 918 Spyder super sports car. Other standard features are the Club Sport Package with a bolted-in roll cage behind the front seats, preparation for a battery master switch, and a separately provided sixpoint safety harness for the driver and fire extinguisher with mounting bracket. The optional Sport Chrono Package features – in addition to its integrated timers – the Porsche Track Precision app for a smartphone. The Track Precision app can be used to have lap times automatically measured via GPS, and to log data on a smartphone for many driving parameters such as vehicle speed, lateral acceleration as well as acceleration and deceleration in the driving direction. It manages this data and lets the driver share and compare it with other drivers. Standard equipment includes biXenon headlights, sports exhaust, dynamic engine mounts, Alcantara interior trim, sports bucket seats, 20inch diameter front and 21-inch diameter rear centre-lock forged alloy wheels, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV) with rear limited slip differential, CDR audio system with 7-inch colour touchscreen, universal audio interface offering MP3 connectivity, automatic climate control, Porsche Stability Management (PSM), Porsche Vehicle Tracking anti-theft system, three-year warranty and three-year roadside assistance package. Customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

For the first time R8 V10 plus customers will also have the option to upgrade to a 20-inch wheel. Naturally, each model is fitted with the latest-generation quattro all-wheel drive, which utilises an electrohydraulic multiplate clutch capable of sending up to 100 percent of torque to the front or rear axle depending on driving conditions. Inside, Fine Nappa Leatherupholstered sports seats with electric adjustment for V10 models and sculpted bucket seats for the V10 plus will position the driver perfectly in relation to the new multi-function plus steering wheel and the Audi virtual cockpit, both of which make their R8 debut here. In the R8 V10 the new flatbottomed steering wheel facilitates control of all the information and entertainment functions offered by the virtual cockpit, and also houses two ‘satellites’ incorporating the control buttons for the Audi drive select system and engine startstop function, both of which are also new to the R8. The Performance steering wheel in the Audi R8 V10 plus

features two more satellites. One houses a button controlling the exhaust system’s sound-altering adjustable flaps, and the other the switch for the activation ‘performance mode’ which is standard for this version and optional for the V10, along with a rotary wheel enabling selection of this mode’s individual ‘dry’, ‘wet’ and ‘snow’ programs. These support dynamic programs handling on dry, wet and snowcovered surfaces, making use of the ESC stabilisation control function. The Audi virtual cockpit is set in a free-standing housing and presents all the information on its 12.3-inch display with elaborate and pin sharp graphics. The driver can toggle between different display modes and also adjust the digital instrument cluster to suit in individual mode. In performance mode, the driver is presented with information on the driving programs, acceleration, deceleration and lateral forces as well as power and torque. The Audi virtual cockpit also displays a shift light, which illuminates when the rev limit has been reached. The driver operates the Audi virtual cockpit using the

multifunction plus steering wheel, meaning there is no need to remove a hand from the steering wheel. Alternatively, operation is also possible via the touch wheel or the buttons in the centre console. Even more of the potential opened up by the state-of-the-art virtual cockpit can be enjoyed by going online in the new Audi R8 – the Audi connect interface is standard, and enables occupants to connect a smartphone or tablet via the system’s integrated Wi-Fi hotspot, and to make use of tailored online services from Audi connect delivered via the fast LTE (Long Term Evolution) network. MMI navigation plus is also standard, and is augmented by the MMI touch wheel with its fingertip-sensitive touch pad enabling easy ‘written’ entry of data into the system. On the outside, the V10 is equipped with an electrically extending spoiler, while the R8 V10 plus gains a large fixed rear wing in carbon sigma, matching the finish of its heated and folding exterior mirrors, sideblades, front spoiler lip and rear diffuser. Further standard items include the front and rear parking assist system and light and rain sensors.

To add visual impact to the other immediately evident more attributes of the sonorous midmounted 10-cylinder engine, both 540PS and 610 PS versions also feature an interior LED lighting package, which illuminates the engine glass-covered compartment and the footwells. The extensive list of options available for the new R8 features enhancements that further enrich the driving experience, including the sports exhaust, the magnetic ride adaptive damping system, laser spotlights for the all-LED headlights in 540PS versions (standard for the V10 plus) and bucket seats (also standard for V10 plus), as well as indulgences such as stunning 20-inch alloy wheels and a 500-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system. Numerous interior decor upgrades and colour combinations for the body and sideblades can also be added to create a uniquely personal R8. All new R8 drivers will also receive a complimentary Audi Driving Experience at Silverstone. This full day training session will help owners to develop an intimate understanding of the car’s dynamics in the relative safety of the world famous Stowe and Grand Prix circuits.

STUNNING: The limited edition McLaren 675LT will be available to buyers, priced from £259,500

The McLaren 675LT, which made its global debut at the 85th International Geneva Motor Show, will be the lightest, most powerful and fastest model in the McLaren Super Series, and also the most exclusive: production will be strictly limited to just 500 examples worldwide. The limited production model, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, has a clear focus on light weight, optimised aerodynamics, increased power, track-focused dynamics and driver engagement. At its core is the lightweight carbon fibre MonoCell chassis, shared with each model in the Super Series, but the chassis set up and powertrain are bespoke, with a third of overall parts and components modified. A more aggressive set up gives the 675LT a unique track-focused feel, while still retaining the adjustable ProActive Chassis Control to ensure drivability and comfort levels are maintained. One of the many updates featured on the 1997 McLaren F1 GTR ‘Longtail’ was a wider track, front and rear. This approach is echoed in

the 675LT, with the front and rear track widened by 20mm, ensuring optimised stability and handling performance. Lightweight springs front and rear have been stiffened – 27 percent at the front and 63 percent at the rear – to improve body control and allow for the 40 percent increase in downforce generated by the revised bodywork and active aerodynamics. Newly-developed suspension

geometry includes lightweight uprights and wishbones based on the learnings from the McLaren P1™. This is coupled with a faster steering rack to give a more extreme driverfocused experience. The obsession with weight saving sees the 675LT tip the scales at just 1,230kg (dry weight), making it the lightest model in the already lightweight Super Series, with a saving of more than 100kg. This has

been achieved with the use of lighter weight components. For example, the changes to the car’s glazing alone save 4.5kg with a thinner windscreen and rear bulkhead glass, and replacing the engine cover with motorsport-style polycarbonate. The 675LT uses the familiar sevenspeed SSG transmission found in the other Super Series models, retaining the Normal, Sport or Track modes. These settings have been recalibrated

to produce more eager performance, with optimised throttle response and gearshifts up to twice as fast as previously offered. The newly developed ‘Ignition Cut’ technology is a technique adopted from Formula 1™ which sees a momentary cut of the fuel spark on gearshift. This delivers the fastest change possible, and is accompanied by a dramatic aural ‘crack’ on both upshift and downshift. Also debuting on the 675LT is an all-new Electronic Stability Control (ESC) calibration, giving the driver an even greater level of control over the throttle and brake inputs. The 675LT unveiled to world’s automotive media gathered in Geneva was finished in the newly launched Chicane Grey, showcasing the McLaren Club Sport pack. This option, priced at £5,090 for the UK market, is designed with an even greater focus on track driving, and includes titanium roll hoop with four point harnesses and a fire extinguisher. The limited edition McLaren 675LT will be available to buyers, priced from £259,500. Deliveries will commence from July 2015.

Infiniti reveals QX30 concept

Infiniti signalled further intentions to grow in the premium compact segment with the world premiere of the QX30 Concept at the Geneva International Motor Show. The QX30 concept is Infiniti’s design vision for a new premium compact crossover, targeting at a new generation of individualistic premium customers. Bringing together the sleek lines of the coupe with the command sitting and allwheel drive of a crossover, the QX30 Concept promises to be just as capable navigating city streets as it is exploring weekend getaways. “With the QX30 Concept, we’re showcasing a distinctively contemporary alternative in the premium compact segment for those who want something more than the status quo,” said Roland Krueger, Infiniti President and CEO. An international team designed the QX30

Concept to appeal to the global customer. Complementing the vehicle’s higher stance, the designers added visual cues which instantly identify the concept as a crossover such as 21-inch wheels, large tyres, lower bumper, sculpted skid plates, and very distinctive roof racks. "We’ve used expected materials in an unexpected way, and given functional elements an artistic twist,” said Albaisa. “It is the unconventional execution of a conventional element that makes the QX30 Concept a design leader.” In addition, the Q60 Concept made its European debut at the show, hinting at Infiniti’s next sports coupe. The stunning two-door concept is a unique combination of eye-catching contours, the promise of heart-pumping dynamics, and highest-quality finishes, giving premium customers a fresh and expressive design icon to which they can aspire.

£400,000 worth of classics sold Brand new classic car auction house CCA sold an impressive £400,000 worth of classics, with a 65 per cent sales rate, at its launch sale at Silverstone race circuit. With a fantastic range of cars displayed in the iconic F1 pit garages, the halls at the legendary venue were packed as Quentin Willson, renowned classic car expert, gave the buyers some insider tips on how to buy a classic car at auction. Willson also hammered away the first ever lot, a 1951 Land Rover Series 1; for a winning bid of £5,035 including premium. The highest selling car on the day was an incredibly rare Riviera Blue 2001 Porsche 911 (996) Turbo, which fetched a total of £30,740, more than £4,000 over its lower estimate. Close behind

was a rare and sought after 2001 Morgan Aero 8, selling for a premium inclusive £27,030. Wowing the crowds was a last of the line 2001 Rover Mini Cooper with just 182 miles on the clock. The last to be sold in Scotland, the time warp car sold for £16,854 including premium. M powered BMWs were clearly in demand at the sale. A low mileage, vibrant blue 1998 BMW E36 M3 EVO was purchased for a significant £13,250. Joining the M3 was a 1993 BMW M5 Nurburgring Edition, supplied with an extensive history file, which sold for £13,356; more than £2,000 over its lower estimate. Other highlight cars sold included a 2000 Jaguar XKR Silverstone; one of just 50 ever

made. The car had just 54,000 miles on its clock and sold for £20,140. A 1969 Jaguar 4.2 MK 2, with a striking blue exterior and luxurious red leather interior, also sold for a substantial sum of £19,504. There were also some bargains and great value to be had at the auction. A 2003 Mercedes-Benz SLK 200 Kompressor with just 55,000 miles from new sold for £3,180 while a luxurious 1995 Mercedes-Benz S500 Coupe Auto sold for £2,650. Speaking after the successful first sale, auction manager of CCA, Joe Watts, said: “It’s been a great first ever sale for us and it’s been fantastic to see so many enthusiasts and buyers come and visit us for what will hopefully be the first of many.”

ARE BOXING REMATCHES WORTH IT By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

There are rematches in boxing that result from an unfair decision and the fans outrage about the wrong result forces the winning opponent to have a rematch as to prove the first result was no fluke like Manny Pacquiao vs Timothy Bradley fight. The top boxers likes the Klitschko brothers and Floyd Mayweather always ensure that they have a rematch clause in their boxing contract prior to taking on their boxing opponent and this gives them the automatic right to a rematch fight should they happen to lose the first one. There have been some great rematches over the years and they can be very entertaining because as viewers we know what happened the last time the fight happened and there is always going to be the speculation about what is expected. It also gives the losing boxer of the first fight a chance to redeem himself and have his revenge. However as a boxing viewer myself, what I have noticed is that boxing rematches seldom produce a different result and the clear winner of the first fight (if that was the case) will always win the rematch. One of the other problems with boxing rematches in my view is that they often disappoint and it is hard to recapture the magic of the first fight

Khalil Alam

that may have been a fight of the year like the Mike Alvarado vs Brandon Rios rematch fight earlier this year that was a disappointment to say the least. Then there is some boxing rematches that managed to live up to the hype of the first fight and produce an equally entertaining fight the second and even the third time like Anturo Gatti vs Mickey Ward, Marco Antonio Barrera vs Erik Morales and of course Muhammed Ali vs Joe Frazier, even though such great classic rematches are very selective. On Saturday night with my views about rematch fights in mind, I was still looking forward to the second boxing bout between The General Aji Sharif vs “The Giant” Imantas Davidaitis who happened to knockout Sharif in their first fight. Sharif’s boxing career had got off to a flying start and he had looked very good against the more experienced and established opponents until he took on the rangy 6ft 9inch tall, “beast of a man” Imantas Davidaitis.. Sharif was caught by a good punch by Davidaitis and was stopped in the second round. The rematch this weekend ended with the same result for the brave Sharif as Davidatis dominated the fight and secured a fourth round stoppage with the referee Kevin McCann deciding Sharif was not fit to continue. In boxing it is sometimes wise for the losing opponent to accept his defeat and move on to the next opponent especially during the early years of a boxer’s career like Sharif. The pride of a boxer sometimes can let him down in the ring and the rematch itself can be the worst move of their career because boxing history has proved the end result is usually the same.

Runners raise £10,000 for charity Helping young cancer patients across the West Midlands A team of thirty Coventry and Birmingham locals joined forces to run the Coventry Half Marathon last weekend, raising thousands of pounds for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The team, dubbed #TeamMesmerEyez, was spearheaded by Haroon Mota, a Youth Support Coordinator who works on the Teenage Cancer Trust ward at University College Hospital in London. The Coventry resident commutes to London for work every day and chose to support the charity because he knows how important it is to support young people with cancer so they don’t feel

isolated. He said: “Teenage Cancer Trust is a truly amazing charity. It is vital that we continue to raise funds for them, as at the moment, for every young person the charity can help, there is another they can’t.” He continued: “It was a great achievement that the entire team completed the 13.1 mile run. “For most of the group they’d never done anything like this before. It was tough work, and many of them came through the finish line hobbling and even wobbling. “In particular, one team member Abdullah Daya, who

would never have dreamed about running a half marathon three months ago, put in a great effort jogging and walking himself through the full distance in three and half hours, crossing the finish line to huge cheers and support.” Student Amandeep Dhaliwal, 17, from Coventry, was another member of the running team and knows firsthand the benefit of being treated on a Teenage Cancer Trust ward. Having undergone chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment for over a year and a half previously, the teenager explained how important it

was to support the crucial services. “Young people need the help and support of specialist wards and staff,” he said. “The ward I was treated on in Birmingham had lots of activities so there is always something to do like watch Sky TV, play computer games. “It’s also good to have support groups to go out with, like going to Nandos and bowling, so you don’t feel isolated and alone.” The team of mainly novice runners completed the 13.1 mile race in Coventry on Sunday 1st March and raised more than £10,000 in total.

Winter World Cup Final to be held on 18th December 2022

It has been heavily criticised ever since it was first proposed, yet the 2022 Qatar World Cup finals will be held in the winter and a December final is well and truly on the cards. Sunday 18th December to be precise is when the final game of the world’s biggest sporting contest will take place, coinciding with the host nation’s official National Day. FIFA confirmed the dates in a statement released last week as fans prepare to pack the sun cream for a winter escape. “The Executive Committee today confirmed that the 2022 World Cup will be staged in November/December with the final to be on December 18,” FIFA said in a statement. “In principle, it was agreed that the tournament should be played over a reduced timeframe, for instance 28 days. “The working group for the international match calendar will meet in due course to finalize the

READY: Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani of Qatar holds the World Cup trophy aloft after his country was announced as the 2022 hosts

international match calendar for the 2019-2022 cycle.” With temperatures averaging around 40 degrees Celsius in the summer months, it came as little surprise to hear the anticipated news break on Wednesday evening. However, clubs across Europe have complained about the tournament clashing with their domestic competitions, meaning thousands of games will need to be re-organised across Europe. If the usual winter breaks are also in place it could cause seasons to overrun. In Germany for example, three months would pass by without a single game in the Bundesliga. Of course there is always another way to look at it. England have underperformed in basically every major international competition since winning the World Cup back in 1966. Could a winter tournament draw a different result? I doubt it but you just never know.

Force India back in the points After a record-breaking season for Force India in 2014, the constructors were back in the points in Australia, whilst Lewis Hamilton stormed home in first. Nico Hulkenberg, who was so impressive throughout last season, moved up seven positions on the track throughout the race to finish in seventh spot with seven points, whilst Sergio Perez got his own solitary point in tenth. Both racers looked strong throughout the encounter, and despite qualifying further down the track than they may have liked, it was another successful finish for the pair. High-flying Hulkenberg is enjoying some of the best form of his career with Force India and said he was ‘very pleased’ with the Australia result. “Starting the season with two cars in the points is always positive,” he said. “It was a good race; I didn't make any mistakes and, while the reliability of our car helped us take advantage of the problems of others, at this stage in the season it is important to capitalise on any opportunity. “We were ready when it counted; we had a good strategy and we delivered under the pressure. In terms of performance we are not yet where we would like to be, but everyone is working

really hard to get there and make our car quicker.” Teammate Perez, who also overtook five drivers to claim his tenth position, added: “It was one of those unusual races where so many things happened, but I’m certainly happy to come away with a point and see Nico also score good points for the team. “We went for a different strategy compared to Nico to maximise the team’s chances so I started on the medium tyres in order to have the advantage on the softs at the end of the race. “Unfortunately, after the safety car the FIA asked me to give a place back to Ericsson, which also meant dropping behind Button, and that was really painful for my race. “Button was on the soft tyres and, although I was quicker, it was not easy to overtake and I lost a lot of track position. Still, I’m focussing on the positives of scoring a point from a difficult race, which is a good result for the team.”

Twitter BACKLASH for racist fan PRAYER: Liverpool fans, Asif Bodi and Abubakar Bhula, were pictured praying at Anfield earlier this month causing a social media storm

#DISGRACE post lands Reds fan in hot water A Liverpool fan, who uploaded a photo to Twitter of two Muslim supporters praying at half time with the hashtag #DISGRACE, has been condemned on social media. Solicitors Asif Bodi and Abubakar Bhula were photographed worshipping during the Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers game earlier this month by Stephen Dodd. Putting the picture on his Twitter account with the message, “Muslims praying at half time at the match yesterday #DISGRACE,” caused an

uproar Despite the image being removed shortly after, fans continued to vent their annoyance at the initial tweet. One Twitter user wrote: “We support @LFC together man...What is your problem?” whilst another added: “Why do you believe witnessing the Muslim prayer offensive? We’re just human bro. LFC fans too.” Others on the micro-blogging site pointed out the number of Muslim players in the current Liverpool squad.

The two supporters pictured, Solicitors Asif Bodi and Abubakar Bhula, told the Liverpool Echo they had been thankful for the public’s reaction and support. It is not the first time the Muslims praying at a football stadium has been in the news with West Ham fans apparently turning on their own supporters who were trying to worship during a game last season. A group of worshippers were sworn at and intimidated before fans began chanting ‘Irons’ in apparent attempts to drown out the prayers.

Ashfaq misses out after controversial loss to Ukrainian FRUSTRATED: Qais Ashfaq

FIGHT: Ashfaq and Myola Butsenko were tied on points going into the final round with the Brit edging the closing stages (Pic: Twitter)

Leeds’ boxing ace, Qais Ashfaq was in disbelief last week after his latest British Lionhearts appearance resulted in a ‘heartbreaking loss’ due to a controversial refereeing decision. The 22-year-old was up against the world number three in the amateur bantamweight division, Myola Butsenko, and with scores perfectly tied going into the fifth and final round everything was still to play for. Taking control of the closing stages, Ashfaq was moments away from victory when the referee opted to stop the fight due to a cut above the Brit’s eye. Despite the majority seeing the wound open up due to a clash of heads, referee Stefan Nordin deemed the wound a result of a punch, and so declared the Otaman fighter the victor.

“The decision was ridiculous,” Ashfaq said. “To have out-boxed the Ukrainian number one, and world number three, and then to be done over in the final round like that was heartbreaking. “I hate complaining about these sorts of things but I felt cheated out of it. You train so hard leading up to the fight and to lose in that manner; words can’t even explain. “The referee seemed to be in a perfect position yet I have ultimately lost because of a headbutt.” The British Lionhearts went on to lose the contest, four matches to one, against the Ukrainian Otamans leaving the side sixth in the eight-team table. Despite his frustrations, Ashfaq remains confident in his own ability and those of his team

whilst accepting there were more positives to be taken out of his latest bout. “I performed well and should have beaten a world class boxer that night but now I just have to stay strong and keep myself positive,” he said. “I am still really enjoying the WSB and the five-round contests and am now looking forward to the fight against Cuba next month.” Due to the cut suffered by Ashfaq, the heavy hitter will not be competing in his schedueled matchup with Algeria Desert Hawks later this month. Instead, he will re-enter the ring on Thursday 16th April at York Hall, London, to conclude his World Series of Boxing tournament against the so-far unstoppable Cuba Domadores.
