The hero Sikh who broke religious protocol and removed his turban to help an injured boy has been rewarded for his valiant actions by total strangers. Harman Singh was in his Auckland home when he heard screeching tyres and ran outside to find five-year-old Daejon Pahia lying in the road. Singh removed his turban to stem the bleeding from Daejon’s head and helped comfort the boy until an ambulance arrived. When interviews with Singh were broadcast people noticed his sparse apartment. Inspired by concerned comments from viewers, the staff at the Good News Network got in touch with a local furniture store owner and surprised Singh with a truckload of new furniture for his apartment. Singh said, through tears: “This the biggest surprise of my life.” Normally, turbans are only removed in intimate circumstances such as bathing the head or washing the hair, but the 22-year-old told the newspaper: “I wasn’t thinking about the turban. I was thinking about the accident and I just thought ‘He needs something on his head because he’s bleeding.’ That’s my job to help. “And I think anyone else would have done the same as me.” Little Daejon suffered a serious head injury and lacerations to his kidneys after he was hit by a fourwheel drive on his way to school. Daejon’s mother Shiralee said she was grateful for Singh’s actions and that her son had been asking about those who helped him.

14-year-old wins geography challenge

MASTERMIND: Karan Menon won a $50,000 college scholarship, pictured here with his proud mother

Karan Menon knew his answer was right but wasn't sure how to argue his case. Contestants in the USA’s National Geographic Bee aren't instructed on challenging what they're told is a wrong answer. He raised his hand and hoped host Soledad O'Brien would notice. O'Brien called on him. Karan a 14year-old eighth-grader from Edison, New Jersey, USA explained that his answer was correct. The question:

"The Mesabi Range contains a large deposit of what metal-bearing mineral?" O'Brien was looking for was "iron ore." Karan said "taconite," which is a form of iron ore. After conferring for about five minutes, the judges gave him credit. That point was just enough for Karan to avoid elimination and make the top three. He cruised from there, getting every championship-round question right to become the 27th National Geographic Bee champion on Wednesday. "I knew this question," he said. "I was 100 percent sure. I didn't know why I had been marked wrong, so I decided to speak up for myself and challenge the question." Karan studied for eight hours a day after winning the New Jersey state bee. He also sought out a coach, Kumar Nandur, who worked with winners last year and in 2010. But knowledge and memorization weren't the keys to victory — Karan said it was about focus. He took deep

breaths and meditated between questions. "Everyone here is equal," Karan said. "When it comes to the competition, you have to control your mind. You have to adapt to all this, like, millions of tons of pressure that's coming on you." Karan won a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime National Geographic Society membership and a trip to the Galapagos Islands. Runner-up Shriya Yarlagadda, 11, of Grand Blanc, Michigan, received a $25,000 scholarship, and third-place finisher Sojas Wagle, 13, of Springdale, Arkansas, got a $10,000 scholarship. Indian-American children have dominated both the National Geographic Bee and the Scripps National Spelling Bee in recent years. Karan and Shriya are both of Indian descent, and there was a laugh among parents and contestants when they got a question about a new state in India that was formed last year.

Salman Khan’s accident case records unavailable

According to a newly released report, an activist in India has claimed that the Maharashtra government's Home and Law & Judiciary departments do not have any records pertaining to the Salman Khan accident case on 28th September 2002. A Right To Information (RTI) query by Mansoor Darvesh has revealed that the files were destroyed on 21st June 2012 by a fierce fire that engulfed Mantralaya, the state government headquarters in South Mumbai. Quoting the activist, the

report stated that the individual had filed the RTI query to the two departments seeking information on the total number of counsels, lawyers, solicitors, legal advisors, public prosecutors, etc. engaged and appointed by the state government to fight the case. He had even asked for the total expenses incurred by the state on the Salman Khan case, from the start in 2002 till the judgement by the Mumbai sessions court on 6th May this year. The report further stated

that on the activist's query, the government responded with partial information stating that the documents related to the case were lost in the 2012 fire and "therefore, cannot be made available." After being convicted, Salman is currently out on bail and has recently sought permission to fly abroad. Now, we’re no legal experts, but we’re guessing the destruction of those all important records is conveniently quite lucky for Sallu.

BRAGGING: Addil Haroon’s irresponsible high-speed driving killed a 25-year-old man

Bragging death crash teen in 142mph Snapchat boast

Galloway to run for London Mayor

A 19-year-old speed-freak bragged about clocking 142mph on a motorway hours before he sped through a red light and killed another driver. Addil Haroon took a photo of his Audi A6's speedometer while racing at double the speed limit on the M62 in November last year. He then sent it to a friend via Snapchat, saying: "Leeds to Rochdale 11mins catch me." In the early hours of the next day, the teenager drove the hire car through a red light in Bury Road, Rochdale, at more than 80mph. He smashed into an Audi A5 with such force the vehicle was cut in half. The 25-year-old driver, Joseph Brown-Lartey, died instantly from multiple injuries. Experienced traffic officers said it was the worst accident scene they had dealt with. Haroon, from Essex Street, Rochdale, was jailed at Manchester Minshull Street Crown for six years on Thursday 28th May. He had pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to causing death by dangerous driving and driving without a licence or insurance.

Sergeant Paul Higgins, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "Haroon's dangerous behaviour put innocent members of the public at risk and his irresponsible actions have devastated a family. "He was uninsured, unlicensed and driving dangerously but he paid no heed and sadly Joseph paid the price for this. "Many of the experienced traffic officers who were first on the scene described the collision scene as the worst they've witnessed and it will stay with them throughout their time in the force. "Haroon is off the road and behind bars and I hope today's sentence goes some small way to bring some closure for the family." Following his death, Mr BrownLartey's parents issued a statement, saying their ‘lives will never be the same again’. "Joseph is a great son, brother and friend to many people with his whole future ahead of him which has been tragically and suddenly taken away from us far too soon," they said. "He will be sadly missed but never forgotten."

Former Bradford West MP George Galloway has announced his intentions of running for the Mayor of London position in 2016. The Respect Party leader took to Twitter to declare his bid, posting a picture of himself sitting on a bed with his son and the caption: “Dad, you’ve got this. I’ve got your back!”, adding in the Tweet’s message: “I’m standing for Mayor of London 2016.” After the post, Mr Galloway appeared on LBC Radio where he said his knowledge of London, having previously held the position of MP for Bethnal Green and Bow for five years between 2005 and 2010, would enable him to interact with all communities. He said: “I have a keen understanding of the plurality of London’s population, with many marginalised communities, many of them poor white people, left behind by the drift to the centre and the homogeneity of the mainstream political system.” He continued: “There’s a tide in the affairs of this country, seeking independent-minded larger than life candidates for these directly elected positions, and that’s what I’m going to try to do. “[Boris] has been very successful in projecting himself as an iconoclastic, independent-minded person, even when in fact his views are pretty mainstream right-wing.” The London City Hall elections will take place in May 2016 when current mayor, Boris Johnson, will stand down following his election as MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip.

Machetes used in huge brawl at Leeds community centre ATTACK: Footage of men with machetes was filmed on mobile phones as a mass brawl pursued at the Bangladeshi Community Centre

INJURIES: Six people were reported to be injured following the conflict, with one man needing nine stitches to the top of his head

Leeds’ Bangladeshi Community Centre was the scene of a mass brawl last weekend as punches and chairs were thrown during what was supposed to be an ‘Annual General Meeting’. Seventeen people have so far been arrested following the incident on Saturday 30th May as over onehundred members of the local Bangladeshi community clashed at the Harehills site. The brawl, which also saw police officers attacked, was filmed on mobile phones with footage showing weapons such as machetes, metal pipes and a Stanley knife all being used. Disputes are believed to have broken out over the running of the community centre which two rival factions believe they should be in charge of following the alleged suspension of directors. An AGM had been arranged by one group of supporters and when the opposition entered the building, they were attacked and a brawl pursued. Abdul Kashem is one of the candidates hoping to be elected as a director at the centre and was one of the men who entered the AGM to voice their concerns over the meeting. “We had been given assurances by the police, who were inside the building at the time, that it was safe to enter,” he said. “The plan was to voice our concerns over financial irregularities and the centre’s mismanagement. “However, when we got inside we were attacked with weapons which we believe had been passed inside by people who were waiting for us. “People were fearing for their lives.”

Bloodied scenes as Bangladeshi community clash Mr Kashem suffered minor injuries whilst his brother received a deep cut to the top of his head which required nine stitches. Director at the centre, Abul Abedin, also suffered injuries to his head after entering the building and says the blame lies with his local councillor who failed to prevent the AGM from going ahead. “We pleaded with the council to close the meeting down before it even begun because we knew the threat of it,” he said. “This was not heard and therefore there is blood on their hands. All of this could have been avoided.” Councillor Arif Hussain, who represents the Harehills area for Leeds City Council, was singled out by Mr Abedin as at fault due to his affiliation with the centre. A protest was held outside Leeds Civic Hall on Monday 1st June calling for the resignation of Mr Hussain from the council. Speaking to the Asian Express, Mr Hussain said he was due to meet with

police officers on Monday for a full briefing on the events that transpired before he could comment further. Writing on Facebook, the Leeds inner east neighbourhood policing team said: “Both the local community and West Yorkshire Police refuse to accept such abhorrent violence; it has no place in our city. “We echo calls already made from within the community for the small number involved to remain calm and to use dialogue to resolve any grievances.” Chief Inspector Nik Adams, of Leeds district police, added: “A small number of neighbourhood PCs and PCSOs supporting a community event were faced with a violent incident involving large numbers of people during which they themselves came under attack. They quickly called in further officers to assist and within minutes brought the incident under control. “The local neighbourhood policing team are continuing to work with those at the Bangladeshi Centre and the wider community to prevent further incidents and to provide reassurance.”

16-year-old boy arrested over murder of woman in Burka

A 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named, has been arrested over the murder of a 31-year-old woman in a Burka and a young dad. The teenager was apprehended on the Salary Brook Trail in Colchester on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. He was walking along the same trail where Saudi student Nahid Almanea was stabbed to death in June 2014. Essex Police said he had now been arrested on suspicion of the murder of Ms Almanea and that of a young

father, James Attfield, who died after being stabbed more than 100 times in a park in the town in March last year. The teenager is being held in custody at Colchester police station. The two deaths prompted fears that a killer was randomly targeting members of the public, after officers said there were ‘striking similarities’ in how they were murdered but nothing to link the two victims. Mr Attfield, who had a brain injury after being hit by a car four years before his death,

was found fighting for his life in the town’s Castle Park on 29th March last year. He died later in hospital. Ms Almanea was walking to lectures at the University of Essex, when she was murdered on the Salary Brook Trail on 17th June. Speaking at the time, Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Worron said a criminal profiler had assessed both cases. He added: “The circumstances of both crimes mean that we must consider the possibility that the same

killer or killers are responsible. “We are continuing to explore this line of inquiry, along with many others, and both investigations are being continually resourced and are receiving equal precedence.” Anyone with information should contact Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Over £30,000 raised for Nepal victims

Following the worst disaster in Nepal’s recent history last month, businesses and residents across the Midlands joined forces last week to help raise tens of thousands of pounds for victims of the tragedy. On Sunday 26th April, Nepal was struck by a devastating earthquake, which resulted in the deaths of more than 8,000 people and affected thousands more. Just weeks later, a second quake hit the same nation, killing at least 65 others. Now, as the country aims to rebuild its infrastructure, and natives appeal for food, drink and medicine, the need for aid has never been so vast. East End Foods PLC joined forces with the Centre for Oneness, as well as businesses and charities, on 17th May, to raise money for those affected with a special Bollywood Classic Show at the Prestige Suite in Smethwick. Hundreds were in attendance to see performances from Jas Wouhra, Rekha Pande, Shahzad Zafar, Shashi Kala, Boo Boo and Prem

Sagar, whilst the night was hosted by Sanjay Sharma from BBC Asian network. A host of faiths were represented in the audience and donations made on the night totalled £31,000 signalling a huge success for the quickly turnedaround event. These funds will go towards building temporary shelters for victims in Nepal as well as food supplies with a contingent of volunteers set to fly out this week. Special guests, Deputy Lieutenant, Dr Satya Sharma, and Mohammad Aslam, spoke at the event about what conditions were like in the country at the moment having returned from Nepal recently. Both men will be going back next week with another team of volunteers and will see firsthand where the money raised from this event will be going. All the volunteers heading over will be covering their own travel expenses, to ensure every penny raised goes to those most in need.

Tragic car accident

Police can confirm a 12-year-old boy, seriously injured in a collision in Hollyhedge Road, West Bromwich on Wednesday 27th May, has now died. Amar Atwal was taken to hospital after the Mitsubishi Outlander he was travelling in was involved in a collision with a Vauxhall Astra at the junction with Thursfield Road at around 8.40pm. Since the crash, Amar remained in a critical condition on a life support machine at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. His family had been at his bedside since the collision. Two other relatives, a 12-year-old boy and a 44-year-old woman, who were also in the car at the time of the crash, remain in hospital in a serious but stable condition with multiple injuries.

UK to expand Iraq training mission

Britain is preparing to expand its military training mission in Iraq and increase the number of personnel helping ready the moderate Syrian opposition in Turkey, a British source familiar with the plan said on Sunday. The ministry of defence says nearly 800 British soldiers are already working in training and support roles in the region at a time when Islamic State militants are making gains in both Iraq and Syria. “The UK is preparing to offer more,” the source told Reuters, saying London was keen to step up its contribution in response to events on the ground. A final decision had not yet been taken and was not imminent in the coming days, the source said, but Britain's presence would soon be expanded. Asian

Snooker club loses licence over sex and drug abuse claims

A snooker club in Birmingham run by two Asian brother-in-laws has had it licence shredded following allegations of the site being used for child sexual exploitation and drugdealing. Birmingham Council revoked the Big Break Snooker Club’s licence following an uncontested hearing on 20th May. Big Break managers, Qumar Zaman and Hissam Khaliq, did not attend or present any evidence at the hearing. The club has so far been unavailable for comment. The venue has also seen numerous reports of robberies and thefts. Police said a number of continuing investigations were connected to the Big Break Snooker Club in Coventry Street, Digbeth. Officers found weapons, drugs and used condoms at the Coventry Street club during a raid in March. The city council's licensing committee heard evidence of ‘widespread’ drug use and was told that rooms had been used

to abuse children. It voluntarily closed its doors in March and on 1st May West Midlands Police was granted a three-month closure order at the city's magistrates' court. At the time, Inspector Will O'Connor said inquiries had shown a ‘pattern of young women or girls entering the club with older men’. He said: “Information we uncovered suggests the girls had gone on to spend time in private rooms with the men where they were exposed to

alcohol and drugs and groomed for sexual activity.” Inspector O'Connor said during a visit by officers in March known offenders were discovered near the club's entrance, as well as ‘bags containing heroin and crack cocaine on a sofa in one of the rooms, used condoms, a lockknife and a hammer lying around’. He said the evidence suggested the venue was not being used as a snooker club, but as ‘a place for young men

to meet, use and supply drugs, commit crime and engage in sexual activity’. Birmingham City Council's licensing committee also heard evidence of assaults by customers in the nearby area, as well as breaches of fire and smoking regulations. Chris Neville, head of licensing, said three girls who were reported missing were found at the club on separate occasions, while a Facebook post by another girl linked her with the property. He said while no sexual activity was witnessed by officers, the overall evidence presented outlined a ‘den of iniquity’. Mr Neville said Wednesday's licensing review was automatically triggered by the closure order granted to officers at the beginning of the month. The committee agreed to revoke the club's licence to ‘promote the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, and the protection of children from harm’.

If you’ve ever dreamed about having a funny number plate for your car, or perhaps something a bit smutty or rude, then forget it. DVLA licencing bosses have revealed the banned list of raunchy and ‘inappropriate’ registration plates, including religious references, homophobic words and innuendos– and the list runs to 46 pages. The organisations has even clamped down on those related to alcohol abuse, such as SL05 HED and AL60 POP. This year the licensing authority has banned OS55 AMA, P15 OFF, PR15 SON, DR12 UGS, HE12 OIN, SH15 TTY, UP15 BUM and WA15 TED, just to name a few. Religious references such as JE5 5US, KO12 AAN and AL14 LAH have also been put on the list of the unobtainable. The authority's proprietary steering group - which meets twice a year - has also forbidden a man whose surname is Islam from getting an 15LAM plate because it was deemed ‘inappropriate’. The man, who did not want to give his first name, told the Guardian: “I made an inquiry to the DVLA about the possibility of obtaining '15LAM', only to be told that this was an inappropriate licence plate. “I'm not particularly religious, but I am proud of my name. “I was thinking of buying the plate as a gift for my brother. “To be told that my name is offensive is really upsetting.” Despite DVLA banning the 15LAM registration number, people associated with the number plate industry are eagerly waiting for the auction of MO14MED, which, they believe might fetch £100,000 for the Treasury. In the last financial year the DVLA raised more than £105 million for the Treasury through the sale and auction of personalised registrations. They have said that they only ban certain plates if they are ‘likely to cause general offence or embarrassment’ on the grounds of racial, political, or religious sensitivities or if the authority finds them in ‘poor taste’. A few days ago a plate with the registration number KR15HNA was sold at auction for £233,000. DVLA bosses want to keep rude registrations off the road, but surprisingly it’s allowed PEN15 and ORG45M, which were released some years back. However, DVLA has the power to cancel the number, if it gets complaints related to a specific plate, and may ask the driver to give it back to the authority. A large number of offensive suffixes are banned every six months as the new plates appear, but the 46-page list also includes some surprise entries. GU11 LTY is forbidden, along with AL60 POP, PRO5 TAT and MO55 AD. The PEN 15 plate is currently in the hands of dealer RegTransfers, which is hoping to arouse interest in bids over £100,000. The highest sum forked out for a registration from DVLA was for '25 O', which alone raised over £518,000. It was sold last November to John Collins, a classic Ferrari dealer in Ascot, Berkshire. Bidding for the plate was fierce because it can be attached to a Ferrari 250 GTO, one of which fetched a record £22.8m at auctioneers Bonhams last year. Potentially offensive number plates became a serious issue for the DVLA after the release of H8 GAY in 2006 was met with protest because it was deemed offensive to gay people. Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson was chased out of Argentina after driving a Porsche across the country with the number plate H982 FKL, which was seen as a reference to the Falklands War. A DVLA spokesman said: “Registration numbers are withheld in instances where if displayed on a number plate they are likely to cause general offence or embarrassment. “The reasons can be on the grounds of political, racial and religious sensitivities or simply that they are regarded as being in poor taste.” For the full list of banned number plates go to www.asianexpress.co.uk

Brazil pays tribute to Valley Parade fire victims AsianExpress.co.uk

Thirty years ago, 56 people went to a football match and never returned home as the Valley Parade fire proved to be one of the worst sporting disasters in recent history. To commemorate the anniversary of the events that transpired on Saturday 11th May 1985, a memorial was held in Bradford’s Centenary Square last week whilst elsewhere, respects were also being paid at the other side of the world. In Brazil, a fellow Bradfordian who suffered burns in the fire as a young football fan, unveiled a plaque at Sao Paulo’s Museum of Football to commemorate those who died in the blaze in the Main Stand. Wasim Mir is currently the Deputy Ambassador in Brazil’s British Embassy and was 13years-old when he was forced to run onto the pitch for his own safety. Recalling the moment the fire struck, he said: “I had been taken to the match by my uncle, Reza Mir, to celebrate Bradford collecting the Third Division league trophy. As a special treat he bought tickets for the main stand. “Just before half time the section of the stand we were seated in was asked to evacuate by the police because of a small fire. “I remember walking calmly along the back of the stand when all of a sudden smoke was everywhere. After that I just

Luckily I eventually found him unhurt. “Although I saw the police carrying away a body in a make shift stretcher made out of a police jacket the extent of the what happened didn’t register. “It only dawned on me later when I went to hospital to have my injuries treated and saw hundreds

of people with burns.” On Tuesday 12th May, Mr Mir was joined by Museum of Football director, Luiz Bloch, to unveil the memorial plaque which will be homed amongst some of the sport’s most renowned memorabilia. It was the Deputy Ambassador’s idea to bring the tribute to the museum and after consulting officials from the museum itself and the Fire Remembrance Panel in Bradford, it was confirmed that a tribute would be installed. “As someone who was injured in

the fire it felt like a real honour to unveil the plaque at the Football Museum in Sao Paulo,” Mr Mir added. “It feels fitting to have those who died remembered in Brazil, a country so closely associated with football, the country of Pele, Zico and Romario. “It was good to talk to the Executive Director of the Museum, Luiz Bloch about the impact the Bradford City Fire had had in terms of initiating improvements in stadiums in the UK, making them safer and more family friendly.”

of Achievement Blind victim of honour based abuse is county’s ‘Woman of the Year’

A survivor of honour-based abuse has been crowned this year’s ‘Yorkshire’s Woman of Achievement’ saying she hopes to lead by example for other disabled members of the Asian community. Saliha Rashid, from Leeds, picked up both the ‘Young Achiever’ and overall ‘Woman of Achievement’ title earlier this month at the annual Sue Ryder Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards. Registered blind since birth, Saliha comes from a community which operates an honour system and as a result saw her life controlled by her family, with everything from books she read to phone calls and friends she made out of her control. The 22-year-old left her home at the start of her second year at University and has since been giving a voice to other victims and survivors of honourbased abuse by campaigning for the rights of Asian women. The Leeds Trinity Student says she was surprised when she received her nomination for the Young Achievers award and is still in ‘disbelief’ following the awards ceremony. “It still hasn’t sunk in,” she said. “The work I do is something that has to be done so to win the award was so overwhelming and emotional. “I never expected to receive the Young Achiever award let alone Woman of the Year. There were so many deserving women.” AWARDED: Saliha won both the Young Achiever and overall Woman of Achievement awards at an annual presentation evening earlier this month

Saliha paid tribute to her friends and lecturers for their help in achieving the award adding it was the people who said she ‘would never amount to anything’ that she most wanted to thank. “They were the ones who motivated me to keep going, to prove the point that disability and gender is not something which has to set anyone back,” she said. “I hope my success in this awards ceremony shows other disabled members of the Asian community that you can overcome anything and allows us to tackle taboo subjects.” Carol Green, Volunteering Coordinator at Leeds Trinity University, nominated Saliha for the awards and also attended the ceremony at the Royal Armouries to see her pick up the accolades. She explained why the former Psychology student was deserved of her awards. “I was so proud of her when she got up and spoke of her determination to continue to speak up against gender discrimination, and campaign for the rights of Asian women,” she said. “It was a pleasure to have nominated her for the award. “Saliha was an enthusiastic volunteer whilst at Leeds Trinity. Our volunteering programme gives all students the opportunity to volunteer during their degree, which can add hugely to their CVs.”

Scientists identify key to preventing secondary cancers Leading scientists from the University of Sheffield and University of Copenhagen have identified a possible key to preventing secondary cancers in breast cancer patients, after discovering an enzyme which enhances the spread of the disease. Secondary (metastatic) breast cancer is the main cause of the 12,000 deaths which occur from breast cancer in the UK every year. The most common site for the disease to spread is the bone – occurring in around 85 per cent of secondary breast cancer patients. The new research, which was conducted at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, found that the enzyme LysYl Oxidase (LOX) released from the primary tumour causes holes in bone and prepares the bone for the future arrival of cancer cells. The findings suggest that identifying LOX in oestrogen receptor negative (ER negative) breast cancer patients early, could allow doctors to block the enzyme’s activity, preventing bone damage and the spread of tumour cells to the bone (metastasis), halting the progression of the disease. The researchers also showed that treatment with bisphosphonate, an existing class of drug which prevents the loss of bone mass and is already used to treat diseases such as osteoporosis, was able to prevent the changes in the bone and the spread of the disease in mice. The pioneering research, co-led by Dr Alison Gartland at the University of Sheffield’s Department of Human Metabolism, could lead to a better prognosis for cancer patients in the longer term. Dr Gartland said: “This is

important progress in the fight against breast cancer metastasis and these findings could lead to new treatments to stop secondary breast tumours growing in the bone, increasing the chances of survival for thousands of patients. “We are really excited about our results that show breast cancer tumours send out signals to destroy the bone before cancer cells get there in order to prepare the bone for the cancer cells’ arrival.

cancer cells prime the bone so it is ready for their arrival. If we were able to block this process and translate our work to the clinic, we could stop breast cancer in its tracks thereby extending patients’ lives.” Katherine Woods, Senior Research Communications Manager at Breast Cancer Campaign and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: “The reality of living with secondary breast cancer in the bone is a stark one,

“This is important progress in the fight against breast cancer metastasis and these findings could lead to new treatments to stop secondary breast tumours growing in the bone, increasing the chances of survival for thousands of patients.” “The next step is to find out exactly how the tumour secreted LOX interacts with bone cells to be able to develop new drugs to stop the formation of the bone lesions and cancer metastasis. This could also have implications for how we treat other bone diseases too.” Study co-leader Dr Janine Erler, formerly Team Leader in Cancer Biology at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, who now is Associate Professor at the Biotech Research & Innovation Centre (BRIC) at the University of Copenhagen, said: “Once cancer spreads to the bone it is very difficult to treat. Our research has shed light on the way breast

which leaves many women with bone pain and fractures that need extensive surgery just when they need to be making the most of the time they have left with friends and family.” She added: “Secondary breast cancer kills 1,000 women each and every month in the UK alone and yet we still don’t know enough about how and why breast cancer spreads to stop it. “Our newly-formed charity is determined that by 2050, no one will lose their life to breast cancer and we’ll do this by ramping up our research efforts, in this area in particular, doing everything possible to achieve that goal.”

Clegg not welcome in Russia

AsianExpress.co.uk

Britain's former deputy PM Nick Clegg is among a secret list of 89 western leaders declared persona non-grata by Russia, prompting the UK government to say that there was no justification for the move. Clegg, the outgoing Liberal Democrat leader, appears to have angered the Kremlin by calling for Russia to be stripped of the 2018 football World Cup in an interview with Sunday Times last July, after President Vladimir Putin's aggression in Ukraine. Clegg had said it was ‘unthinkable’ that Russia should keep the tournament. He has been joined on the no-go list by eight other Britons, including former UK foreign secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind.

India's defence procurement agency has cleared the purchase of 56 transport planes from Europe's Airbus in a deal worth an estimated £1.2billion, as the country updates its aging fleet of Avro aircraft. The government also approved a Russian proposal to build Kamov light helicopters in India and the purchase of 145 ultra-light howitzers from the United States as part of its efforts to modernise the military. Under the bid, Airbus will supply 16 of the C295 planes in ‘flyaway’ condition and the subsequent 40 would be manufactured and assembled by Tata Advanced Systems in India. They would be the first military planes built by an Indian private company on Indian soil with current manufacturing in the nation dominated by state-run Hindustan Aeronautics. Asian

“Paracetamol Challenge”

Police and schools warn parents and pupils over latest “dangerous” social media craze DANGEROUS: The 'Paracetamol Challenge' has spread via Facebook and Instagram

Parents are being warned of dangers of a new craze amongst young people termed as the “Paracetamol Challenge”, which has spread via Facebook and Instagram. Children are risking their lives in a new social media craze involving the abuse of over-the-counter paracetamol. In large doses, paracetamol causes a slow and painful death, where victims wake up after overdosing with their livers already irrevocably destroyed, dying hours or days later. The dangerous 'Paracetamol Challenge' appears to have spread via Facebook and Instagram, and encourages youngsters to take multiple painkillers. Police and schools have warned parents and pupils after the craze started in Ayrshire, Scotland, where a teenager was reportedly hospitalised. Alan Ward, head of schools at East Ayrshire Council, said the craze is 'a matter of great concern'. Mr Ward, who was first contacted by police in March said: “We are urging parents to talk to their children about the potential dangers of

taking paracetamol and to discourage their children from engaging in any online activity in support of this dangerous craze. “The challenge results in young people daring each other, through Instagram and Facebook, to take excessive amounts of paracetamol and this is a matter of great concern.” Elsewhere, the craze has seen a grieving mother speak out against the dangers of excessive paracetamol consumption. Mandy Yousaf's daughter Charlotte, 19, lost her life after overdosing on the pills following a split from her partner in 2011. Charlotte was rushed to hospital in Blackpool, Lancs, after collapsing days after taking the tablets, but died the next day. Mrs Yousaf, 48, has warned other teens 'not to end up like my daughter'. She said: “Now you see teenagers egging each other on, and it's a peer pressure thing where they clearly don't know what they're doing. “But it is not just teenagers we need to tell about this - it's teachers. It's parents. Everyone.” If you feel affected by any of the issues in this story or want to speak to someone in confidence, contact The Samaritans.

Hair cut for charity raises funds for tragedy-hit children TRIMMING: Support on the day was offered by Jazz’s friends at Woodland Barbers in Swillington

A dedicated fundraiser from Leeds has had her head shaved for charity as she hopes to raise money for victims of the Nepal earthquakes. 24-year-old trainee solicitor, Jazz Kaur, parted ways with her luscious locks on Thursday 28th May, after opting to take part in the mentally challenging fundraiser after seeing ‘shocking images from overseas’. Over 8,000 people lost their lives following the 8.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Nepal in late April, whilst dozens more were killed following a second quake just weeks later. Thousands of men, women and children have been injured by the disaster whilst millions were affected. As aid missions continue in the country, it is charity champions across the world who have been raising funds for the victims with Jazz adding her name to the list of those offering support. Having her hair shaved by long time

friend and barber, Emma Mack, at Woodland Barbers, Swillington, Jazz says despite the initial shock of her ‘new look’, it was worth it for the cause. “I made the decision to shave my head because I wanted to raise awareness of these kids in Nepal who have been affected in such a terrible way following the two earthquakes,” she said. “Their struggle is beyond pain and it is therefore up to us to hold tight and work together to make sure there is help on hand for the victims. “This head shave is for the ones who are in pain and unable to ask for help, to show we haven't forgotten about them. It is not just for children in Nepal but for children who are struggling all over, and hopefully we can show them that there is a brighter day ahead.” She added: “I will be donating my hair to charity now and just want to thank everybody who's helped. You have all done more than you realise so thanks and stay blessed.” Jazz’s hair will now be donated to the Little Princess Trust – a charity which provides real-hair wigs to children across the UK who have sadly lost their own hair through cancer treatment.

he duty of care owed by surveyors/valuers to their clients was recently considered by the High Court in the case of Freemont (Denbigh) Limited –v- Knight Frank LLP. The case involved a valuer employed by Knight Frank who had been instructed by Freemont to provide a valuation of a plot of land for the purposes of securing finance to develop the land. Knight Frank had been instructed in August 2006 to value development land for lending purposes. Knight Frank valued the land at £17million with the benefit of outline planning permission and £18.7million with detailed planning consent. Subsequently Freemont received offers from other developers to purchase the land for £10.45m and for £11.1m. However, Freemont rejected both of these offers on the basis that they were far below the valuation which it had received from Knight Frank. Outline planning permission was later granted but detailed planning permission was never obtained and the site was not developed. The listed buildings on the land had fallen into such disrepair that the costs of reinstatement was so high that the whole land was considered to be worthless by Freemont.

Freemont subsequently sued Knight Frank and alleged that it had relied on their valuation in deciding whether or not to accept the offers from the developers which it had received. Because none of those offers had matched the level of Knight Frank’s original valuation, they had been rejected. Freemont claimed that Knight Frank had been negligent in overvaluing the land and that the loss in value of the land was caused by that negligence. Freemont claimed for the loss of profit which it had suffered by not accepting the offers which it had received for the land, damages for all subsequent marketing costs and the costs of selling the land. It also claimed, in the alternative, for the loss of chance of selling the land. However, the Court dismissed Freemont’s claim and found that the duty of care owed by a valuer to the land owner extended only to producing the valuation for the bank’s consideration. The duty of care was limited to the purposes for which the report was prepared and Knight Frank’s terms of retainer stated clearly that the report was specifically for the purpose of obtaining financing and that it was not provided for Freemont to rely on when

forming its development plans in the future. There was no contractual basis for allowing the land owner to rely on the report for any other purpose. The Court found that Knight Frank had fulfilled its duty of care to give a fair valuation of the land for Freemont’s purposes of obtaining finance. Freemont was not entitled to claim against Knight Frank for losses suffered as a consequence of relying on the report for other purposes. The Court refused to extend that duty beyond the valuer’s contractual duties. This case is good news for surveyors and professional indemnity insurers as it shows that surveyors who provide valuations for lending purposes cannot be held responsible for investment losses by lenders who rely on the valuation for other purposes. The case also highlights the need to establish the scope of a retainer at the outset and to record clearly in the contractual documentation the purpose for which a report is being provided and any limits of the retainer. At Blacks we can assist with drawing up contractual documentation as well as advising on any professional negligence dispute which you may have.

Bradford City may have missed out on their Wembley dream this season yet one Bantams super-fan will still be present at the FA Cup final, as he sings on the pitch before kick-off. 52-year-old Anwar Musa from Laisterdyke, has been a City supporter ever since he arrived in England in 1968 from his home in Kenya. Anwar says it came as a shock to hear he had been successful in his application and remembers how he first fell in love with English football. “It was the FA Cup final in 1972 between Arsenal and Leeds that really got me hooked and at that time everybody supported the big teams,” he said. “As I lived in Bradford, it was City who got my support and we would go down to the game every matchday and cheer them on. “Unlike today, my friend and I were some of the only Asian faces in the crowd and we stuck out like a sore thumb. “I have seen the ups and downs of this club and I think we are now in a place where we can really grow and push on into the Championship and then who knows.” He added that this year’s FA Cup final held special significance due to its timing with the landmark anniversary of the fire disaster. “The final will be held just a few weeks after the 30th year anniversary of the Valley Parade fire so for me to be representing the club at Wembley is a real honour,” he said. “I hope I can help take the spirit of those 56 fans with me to Wembley and show how great this club really is.”

British Prime Minister David Cameron has appointed Sajid Javid as his business secretary, handing the challenge of improving the country's poor productivity record to one of the rising stars of the Conservative Party. Javid, a 45-year-old former investment banker who is the son of a bus driver, was first elected in 2010 and worked closely with Chancellor George Osborne before becoming culture minister in Cameron's first government. Javid worked for Chase Manhattan Bank and Deutsche Bank before starting his career in politics and is widely tipped as a future Conservative Party leader.

China leader coming to UK

Chinese President Xi Jinping will travel to Britain for a state visit in October, Buckingham Palace said on Wednesday, 10 years after the last such visit by a Chinese president. Despite increasing economic ties between China and Britain, political relations have been strained over pro-democracy protests in the former British colony of Hong Kong. Queen Elizabeth's office said Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan would stay at Buckingham Palace during the visit, the first by a Chinese head of state since President Hu Jintao in 2005. A state visit usually includes a visit to parliament, and a meeting with the prime minister.

‘Inclusiveness’ at heart of innovative proposals

PIONEERING: Bana Gora hopes to see the first mosque ‘for women, managed by women’ open in Bradford

Bradford could soon be home to the UK’s first purpose-built mosque for women as plans to develop a new site continue to progress in the city. Announced initially last month by CEO of the Muslim Women’s Council, Bana Gora, at the group’s ‘Daughters of Eve’ conference, the project brought much interest from the hundreds in attendance. A consultation process is expected to take place over the next few months to discuss the

correct ways to move forward, with dialogue between the MWC and local, national and international scholars and experts. ‘A space for women, managed by women’ was how Ms Gora initially described the idea, and she says it is important women to feel no sense of ‘alienation’ from their religion. “We’ve carried out an audit of local mosques focussing on services provided to women, above all ‘access’ was the biggest

True spiritique class Sami Yusuf tour raises whopping half a million pounds for orphans

A sell-out Sami Yusuf tour has given vulnerable orphans the chance to build brighter futures through Penny Appeal’s orphan programme. The humanitarian charity teamed up with multitalented artist Sami Yusuf for a nine-city tour, to support orphans in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Every venue on the tour was sold-out and the packed crowds contributed in donations and commitments to raise an incredible half a million pounds, which will provide 1,076 orphan sponsorships and build eight orphan homes. Each Penny Appeal orphan sponsorship costs just 50 pence a day, and goes on to provide an orphan with food, clothes, healthcare, education and a dedicated foster mother – all in a loving and caring home. The tour was supported by Sami Yusuf, who is a world famous singer, musician and

songwriter. The popular artist hasn’t been on tour in the UK since 2008, but returned to perform songs from his highly accredited album, ‘The Centre’. Sami treated audiences to his self-coined genre of spiritique, which beautifully blends Western harmonics with traditional Islamic arts. The performances were made even more unique and special with the help of Sami’s musicians, who played traditional Iranian and Asian instruments. Aamer Naeem, Penny Appeal CEO, said: “It was a privilege to work with such an incredibly talented musician and the positive feedback from the whole tour has been incredible. “Sami Yusuf is also a humanitarian worker and we’re absolutely delighted that we can now improve the lives of so many vulnerable orphans, and it’s all thanks to the generosity of everyone who donated.”

Akshay Kumar’s ‘Gabbar Is Back’ gets a lean box office result

Superstar actor, action supremo and Bollywood’s man of the moment Akshay Kumar has once again dominated the Indian and international box office with the tremendous performance of his latest film ‘Gabbar Is Back’ taking just under Rs 40 crores in its opening weekend, making it the highest opener of 2015 so far. The fantastic performance of ‘Gabbar Is Back’ has also had industry insiders crediting Akshay’s vigilante extravaganza as having resurged Bollywood’s recent lean period, taking more at the box office in one weekend then many recent films have taken in three weeks. The movie is a mass entertainer with Akshay delivering some powerpacked punches. Riding on the Aam Aadmi wave in India, the film carries a strong message against corruption with Akshay as the new vigilante in town. Gabbar is a story of a common man, Ajay (Akshay Kumar) wronged by the establishment, who starts the Anti-Corruption Force (ACF) that aims to track down and cease the corrupt strata of society. Akshay Kumar is deemed as India’s most bankable star and according to many close to Akshay, both professionally and personally, the secret to the actor’s enduring appeal, ongoing and recent box office success and longevity is his winning formula for

choosing commercially viable films and his nononsense, ultra-professional approach towards his work. Actor Riteish Deshmukh says of his close friend and co-star: “Akshay as a person is one of the most secure people that I have met. This also reflects in his choices. He does a solo hero, two heroes or a multistarrer film, as long as he likes the script. “He depends on his gut while choosing a script. Then it could be directed by a newcomer, an established director or a director who might have given a failure before. None of that matters to him. He has been around for more than 25 years and yet to be relevant as an actor is an achievement in itself. There is no genre that he hasn’t done or mastered.” Girish Johar, distributor and film business analyst, adds: “Akshay Kumar is definitely one of the most versatile stars of recent times. Where stars do one or at maximum two films in fifteen months, he gives four in twelve months, which is huge! “For the trade, he is one of the most preferred stars as he regularly ensures the rotation at the box office. Even with an average of 75 crore per film, he alone gives 300 crore in a single year, which is amazing. This roughly is 30 per cent of our annual net box office. “Also overseas, with good content films, he does well and attracts good value. He has definitely created his own path, worked on his own set rules and is hugely successful too. He is definitely a strong pillar for the Indian box office.”

Varun’s spooky night in Las Vegas

Ranveer and Anushka choreograph their own moves AsianExpress.co.uk

Fans of ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ have another reason to celebrate as Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma will be seen choreographing their own dance moves for an upcoming song in the movie. The peppy, Punjabi dance number is called ‘Pehli Baar’ and has been sung by Sukriti Kakkar and Siddharth Mahadevan. This is the third song released from the

A major chunk of forthcoming flick ‘ABCD 2’ has been shot in the vibrant locations of USA, which meant that many locals were hired during the shoot. While shooting in Vegas, Varun was given the famous Sinatra Suite at the Mirage where the late singer used to stay whenever he performed in the city. When some dancers in the ‘ABCD 2’ crew got to know of this, they started telling Varun scary stories about the suite just for jest. They told Varun how the legendary Frank Sinatra stayed in the suite very often and thought of it as his home, so even after his death he hasn’t checked out of there. The Sinatra ghost story became a regular conversation topic between the crew-

members and Varun, and it would end with everyone laughing it off. So it was only late one night when Varun was trying to sleep that he heard some sounds in the suite that all the stories he had dismissed earlier suddenly seemed true. “The room was definitely haunted because at night I could hear someone singing and the doors would open weirdly,” said Varun. Varun and Shraddha Kapoor will be seen grooving with Prabhudheva, and the ace choreographer Remo D’Souza will be directing them in ‘ABCD 2’. The film is based on the real life struggle of a Mumbai based dance troupe who go on to win the world hip-hop dance championship.

While Anushka. who plays a dancer in the movie, described the track as a ‘crazy fun song’, Ranveer, who plays the role of Kabir Mehra, took to the

PehliBaar ...Let's chat abt it later tomorrow after you've seen it..around 2pm.” Even Priyanka Chopra, who costars as Kabir Mehra's sister Ayesha, couldn’t resist and tweeted that Anushka and Ranveer were ‘just killing it’ in the song. Dressed in casuals, Ranveer and Anushka look natural in the song and seem to be enjoying a great on-screen chemistry. Before working on their steps, the actors took a brief from the movie’s director, Zoya Akhtar, and the famous

choreographer duo Bosco-Caesar. The idea to make Anushka and Ranveer dance to their own steps was originally from Zoya, who wanted to capture the song in a fluid way where they are both seen as having fun. Both Ranveer and Anushka are considered good dancers and Zoya wanted them to follow their own dancing instincts for the song. The team took just around an hour to decide and choreograph the steps, following which they started shooting. The song had some sequences of jiving, which Ranveer and Anushka kept improvising upon during the shoot. The final song looks natural and effortless, just like it was meant to be.

As the bass drops, a silky, honeyed voice trickles over the backing track. The talent is obvious and the song is infectious; it can be easily attributed to any one of the popular female singers in the industry today. But proving that age really is just a number, brand new artist Blory is about to burst onto the music scene with her explosive new song, 'Holle Holle'. Entering the industry in her fifties, Blory’s debut track is unexpected; taking a traditional Punjabi folk song, underpinning it with hip hop undertones and employing the rap talents of Shortie, making Holle Holle a sure-fire hit. Blory’s voice is velvet as it blends into the catchy backing track produced for her by music mogul Dr Zeus. A match made in heaven with the result of an addictive track with a distinct hip-hop vibe, typically synonymous with Zeus himself as he expertly blends urban with traditional. Brimming

with quiet energy and steely determination, Blory is truly an inspiration to the next generation. Born to an accomplished singer, songwriter and composer, the late Sardar Gursharan Singh Matwala, music is in Blory’s blood. A student of Carmel Convent School, Blory studied Classical Vocal Music and Political Sciences at Punjab University Chandigarh. Blory’s music career took a backseat when marriage, children and a successful business came first. Realising now is the time to pursue her dreams, nothing is holding her back. With a view to become the next big thing in Bollywood playback, Blory’s stunning vocals will certainly capture the hearts of any audience. Holle Holle releases on 4th June 2015 and will be available to pre-order from 28th May.

Aishwarya Rai returns to cinema with ‘Jazbaa’ ENTERTAINMENT

After a five-year hiatus to embrace motherhood, Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan marked her return to the big screen by taking on one of her most demanding roles yet, playing a mother whose child is kidnapped in thriller ‘Jazbaa’. A former Miss World and one of the most successful actresses in Bollywood, Rai Bachchan said the film stretched her as an actress, with each day posing new challenges to overcome. "Every day when I come to work I kept saying, how am I supposed to wrap my head around the situation like this, on any human level?" the actress said at the Cannes Film Festival where ‘Jazbaa’ made its debut on Tuesday 20th May. "That to me just seemed tough, demanding, grueling, challenging and, thereby, so interesting." Rai Bachchan, 41, who was named Miss World in 1994, often features on ‘most beautiful’ lists and is one half of a Bollywood super-couple with actor husband Abhishek Bachchan, son of Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan. Her prolific Bollywood career includes hits such as ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ and ‘Devdas’, and she has also starred in Hollywood movies such as ‘The Pink Panther 2.’ ‘Jazbaa’ (Passion), directed by Sanjay Gupta, is the first acting project for Rai Bachchan after she welcomed her first child in 2011. Gupta said the actress tapped into a "very raw" performance that drove the

film, in which a lawyer and single mother (Rai Bachchan) ‘has to do the impossible’ to get her kidnapped daughter back. ‘Life of Pi’ actor Irrfan Khan also co-stars. At Cannes this year, the subject of women's role in cinema has been a hot topic. Rai Bachchan herself co-chaired a U.N. backed panel to discuss the issue on the sidelines of the festival, where she has previously served as a jury member. She said ‘Jazbaa’ was a strong female drama, but didn't want that to distract from the main content of the film. “We don't want necessarily things being bracketed as femalecentric - by doing that you are marginalising the female protagonist, so don't label it, don't marginalize it, don't define it as being different,” the actress said. “Recognise it as being part of the broader cinematic experience. We all belong, all our subjects and stories too.”

In case you can’t recall or haven’t been able to place it yet, we’re talking about the October 1998 case where Salman allegedly defied (knowingly or unknowingly – who knows) India’s Arms Act by using guns with expired licenses to poach endangered black bucks in Jodhpur. And what is Salman up to, you ask? He’s busy with Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, of course! Then there’s his production venture Hero too, which we’re all looking forward to.

Aamir, who is a big fan of Chan, is all praise for the actor. "I have been a big fan of him. I had seen his film 'Police Story' in back-toback shows in a theatre. He is not an action hero alone... his comic timing is superb. I told him I am big fan of him. I have seen lots of his films. I told him how popular he is in India. He was very happy to know about it," Aamir said. Chan has not watched Aamir's latest film 'PK', but he had seen '3 Idiots'. "I did not ask him if he has seen my films. But the way he met me, I felt he has seen my films. He has seen '3 Idiots'. He is a nice... warm guy," Aamir said.

This tough drama is set in 1960s Bombay, and explores the lives of boxer Johnny Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor) and aspiring jazz singer Rosie (Anushka Sharma). Amid the audacious design studies and automotive beauties from a bygone era gathered at the 2015 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, the BMW Group presented its new BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage and in the process makes a pretty formidable statement of its own. This model is the BMW Design Team's tribute to the 3.0 CSL, a timeless classic and iconic BMW Coupé from the 1970s. "CSL" stands for "Coupé Sport Leichtbau" (coupé, sport, lightweight). With its aluminium bonnet, boot and wings, Plexiglas windows and equipment rigorously pared down to the bare essentials, the old BMW 3.0 CSL tipped the scales around 200 kg lighter than its sibling model, the BMW 3.0 CS. Unsurprisingly, then, it was predestined for a career on the race track. Whereas the material of choice in the 1970s was aluminium, today carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) - offers the optimum weight-to-strength ratio. These high-strength fibres are even lighter and stronger than aluminium. And the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage makes generous use of the high-tech composite,

reinterpreting the concept of lightweight design for the modern age. Wherever CFRP is used, it is also visible - rendering the lightweight design principle tangible both inside and out. Karim Habib, Head of BMW Design, explains the thinking behind the design of the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage: "For BMW designers like us, the BMW 3.0 CSL is a style icon. “Its combination of racing genes and elegance generates an engaging aesthetic that continues to win hearts even today. The BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage celebrates many of those characteristic features, but without copying them. Indeed, some of the parallels are not immediately obvious. We wanted people to sense the family resemblance rather than see it straight off." The BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage is a vision of pure athleticism: the elongated body is set off by distinctive air deflectors, powerful wheel arches and prominent spoilers to the roof and tail. Despite its size, the aerodynamic elements are key in enabling air to flow optimally along the sides of the vehicle. The front air deflector

serves to vent the engine compartment, while wings over the rear wheels ensure optimum airflow around the vehicle. Small rear-view cameras serve to further reduce aerodynamic drag. The large rear spoiler increases downforce on the driven rear axle and in so doing improves power transmission. The Air Curtain and Air Breather systems guarantee optimum ventilation of the wheel housings. And the sheer selfconfidence and sporting prowess of the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage are perfectly summed up in the original colour of its spiritual predecessor Golf Yellow. Boasting one of the broadest and lowest front ends of any vehicle in the BMW Group, the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage's front exudes pure power and athleticism. At the centre, the characteristic BMW kidney grille stands tall in citation of the more upright styling of the kidney grille of yesteryear. The size and spatial depth of the kidney grille symbolise the output of the powerful six-cylinder in-line engine with eBoost. At the same time, the finely wrought geometry of frame and kidney struts lends the front end an air of quality and

exclusivity. The characteristic foureyed face gives a contemporary, hexagonal interpretation of frontend sportiness. Laser light and LED technology facilitate slender, state-of-the-art lighting graphics, and the flat contours of the headlamps generate that characteristically focused BMW look. A stylised "X" inside the lights divides the lighting

functions and conjures up memories of the X-shaped headlamp stickers once used in long-distance racing. Horizontal LED strips create a visual bond between headlamps and kidney grille while at the same time emphasising the broad, flat impact of the front end.

BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage Concept

A large carbon-fibre front splitter reduces the gap between road and front end and, in combination with the kidney grille, offers a modern interpretation of the earlier car's highly distinctive shark nose. Two circular openings and a series of elongated slots pay tribute to other elements featured in the earlier car, but offer a new interpretation for the 21st century. The vehicle sides are in elegant counterpoint to the marked athleticism of front and rear. The long wheelbase and elongated bonnet appear to stretch the Hommage's silhouette. A continuous, horizontal line encircles the vehicle by way of paying tribute to a distinctive stylistic feature of the earlier BMW 3.0 CSL: its allround chrome trim. In combination with the black highlight beneath, the continuous line intensifies the flat, elongated appearance of the sides. A particular detail of the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage is the roofline. Consciously subdivided into three, the line recalls the distinctive upper section of the BMW 3.0 CS - one of the first coupés to feature a roof that did not flow into the tail. Compared with the ubiquitous fastback coupés of the day, this was both an innovation and a design statement, a feature that exuded athleticism and elegance in equal measure. In keeping with the BMW 3.0 CSL, the Hommage features a BMW logo on each of the C-pillars. The all-round shoulderline is also the starting point for the subtle, finely sculpted surfaces of the sides. It follows the development of the shadowy areas behind the front wheel all the way to the lit surfaces above the rear wheels. This interplay between light and shade lends movement and dynamic intensity to the generous surfaces of the vehicle's sides. Dark CFRP areas narrow the gap between the sides and the road, again paying tribute to the consistent lightweight design of the BMW 3.0 CSL. In combination with the black graphic accents, the dark lightweight elements reduce the perceived height of the vehicle and further emphasise its flat silhouette. The black 21" alloy wheels in matt and high-gloss bi-colour versions offer an additional unique highlight. Air control blades in the interstices of the wheel rims, meanwhile, serve to further optimise aerodynamics. As with the front end, the vehicle's tail is broad and muscular in design. Generous surfaces generate presence, horizontal elements emphasise width. A particular highlight is the styling of the rear lights: an LED strip above the spoiler links the two lights, thus giving the rear end a formal framework. The powerfully sculpted rear apron with CFRP diffusor creates a visual impression of the BMW 3.0 CSL's raw power. Even viewed from above, the BMW 3.0 CSL is extremely dynamic. From kidney grille to headlamps, the bonnet traces a broad "V" - a nostalgic throwback to a distinctive and dynamic element of earlier BMW coupés. Other racing features include bucket seats with highquality stitching, a six-point belt and red anodised safety features such as the outlet nozzles for the extinguishing foam, the fire extinguisher itself, and the two switches on the centre console for the emergency shut-off and fire extinguishing mechanism. The only elements in the rear of the vehicle are two helmets integrated into the transmission tunnel. These are held in place by a belt when not in use. In the place of a rear seat bench, there are only covers for the eBoost energy accumulators. Special reflector technology in combination with LED strips create an impressive 3D effect on the covers. In its use of cutting-edge materials and detailed

solutions, the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage displays technical sophistication and subtlety of form. Meticulously crafted aluminium sleeves add highquality accents at the junctions between individual structural elements. The door design is as minimalist as it is expressive: precise, clean surfaces trace an arc rearwards, lending the door element a flowing, dynamic quality. The door openers combine a DTM-style pull strap with the elegant handle-integrated opener of the earlier BMW 3.0 CSL, resulting in the hybrid solution of a nylon pull strap located directly behind the grab handle in the door. As with the interior as a whole, this detail lends expression to the unique character of the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage: a winning combination of lightweight design, athleticism and elegance.

A new era of space New Skoda estate crammed with technology and style

Just months after the debut of the hatchback, comes the new Skoda Superb Estate, which is setting new standards in its segment in terms of space, comfort, safety and connectivity. The new Skoda Superb Estate offers the best interior space in its segment. It is based on MQB technology, with a wheelbase that has been extended by 80mm to

2,841mm. The track width has increased to 1,584mm at the front and to 1,572mm at the rear. The result: even more interior space. In the latest model, driver and passenger have 39mm more elbow room than before. Headroom in the front is 995mm and 1,001mm in the rear – more than in any other model in the segment. Rear knee-room is 157mm –

Porsche has created an exclusive special series of the 911 Carrera: The Black Edition, which is sure to get pulses racing – well it did ours! The combination of black paintwork and black interior emphasises the timeless yet purposeful elegance of the iconic coupe that has been acclaimed as one of the world’s benchmark sports cars since its launch in 1963. Standard equipment on the 911 Carrera Black Edition model includes distinctive 20-inch diameter alloy wheels, automatically dimming rear-view mirrors, rain sensing windscreen wipers, cruise control and Sport Design steering wheel. A rear-mounted, flat-six cylinder engine is a symbolic component of the 911 identity. The 911 Carrera Black Edition is powered by a charismatic 3.4-litre power plant developing 350 hp (257 kW). It is offered as coupé and convertible versions, and with rear-wheel drive or Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive. The special model rides on eyecatching 20-inch diameter ‘911

The boot volume also sets a new benchmark: 660 litres, representing an increase of 27 litres compared to the previous model. When the back seats are folded down, the boot volume reaches an impressive 1,950 litres. The design of the new estate makes a powerful statement. The design is more passionate, modern and emotionally charged than ever before. The use of MQB technology also plays a central role when it comes to styling: the longer wheelbase, the shortened front overhang as well as the widened

The driver and passenger sit on heated seats - with the Porsche crest embossed on the head restraints - and the standard Bose® Surround Sound System provides excellent sound quality. In addition, the mobile telephone module, front and rear Park Assist, which includes a reversing camera, and ‘911’ rear badge add to the effortless style of this 911. In addition to the special Black Edition features, standard equipment

In combination with increased vehicle length, a long wheelbase, shortened front overhang, a sweeping roof line and a steeply angled rear window, the silhouette evolves as a stylistically confident, perfect entity. The new Skoda Superb Estate comes with a veritable armada of new assistance systems for increased safety, eco-friendliness and comfort. With the Golf GTE Sport presented as a world premiere at the legendary GTI event at Lake Wörthersee, Volkswagen is catapulting the GT tradition into the future. The high-tech Golf that is largely made of carbon is powered by a total of three motors - combined in a plug-in hybrid drive with system power of 295 kW / 400 PS. The concept car breaks down traditional barriers between road and motorsport vehicles. Its progressive hybrid system in combination with the high-tech all-wheel drive, a lightweight body, optimum aerodynamic downforce, precision running gear based on the design of the current Golf GTE, a new motor racing cockpit (including visualisation of the racing line)

and an unusual seating concept (two monocoque-like interior areas) enable breathtaking performance on the racetrack. At the press of a button, however, the concept car is able to cover a distance of up to 50 kilometres on electric power alone and hence with zero emissions. The 1.6 litre TSI (turbocharged direct-injection engine) adapted from the superb Polo R WRC (World Rally Car) is accommodated in the engine compartment at the front of the car. It delivers 220 kW / 299 PS and maximum torque of 400 Nm. Volkswagen has already won the World Rally Championship twice with this engine. In the Golf GTE Sport the four-cylinder masterpiece is assisted by two electric motors.

The engineers positioned the first electric motor at the front (in the housing of the 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox). It develops 85 kW / 115 PS and maximum torque of 330 Nm. The second electric motor is located at the rear with the same power output but torque of 270 Nm. The total torque of the drive system is 670 Nm. Whenever possible, the concept car is powered solely by electricity without producing any emissions. In sporty "GTE mode" all three motors work together, giving the all-wheel-drive Golf GTE Sport a standstill to 100 km/h time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 280 km/h. In the NEDC cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles the sports car consumes just 2.0 l/100 km/h.

Pujara says ‘goodbye’ Indian batsmen completes spell with Yorkshire

It may have only been a brief spell in Yorkshire for their latest Indian overseas player, yet Cheteshwar Pujara remains convinced that the county is capable of silverware this summer. batsman completed his four-match The Championship only spell with the county in style last week as he knocked his first century for the club. His 133 against Hampshire at Headingley helped to set up a second Division One win from four matches and keep them in touch with leaders Middlesex. Pujara admitted that he loved his brief stay with Yorkshire, and has opened the door for a return in the coming seasons. When asked about the chances of retaining their Division One crown, the 27-year-old said: “I don’t have any doubt about that. “I always believe in team sports like cricket you need to have the right spirit and atmosphere in the dressing room, and Yorkshire have that. There is plenty of talent in this team, and they have the right work ethics. “If you work on the right things, then you will definitely get the results. “I would love to come back and play for Yorkshire again, maybe next season. “I can’t say anything because I don’t know what it will be like for India in the upcoming season. But, if I’m available, I would love to come back. “I’ve enjoyed my time. The lads have been really kind to me. I’ve enjoyed spending time with them and going out to dinner. It was fun, and I’ve enjoyed my cricket here.” Pujara scored 264 runs in six Championship innings, also including a half-century in the draw against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge last month.

SHOCKED: Kid Galahad is currently appealing the ban which will see him suspended from the sport for two years

Kid vows to fight drugs ban Two-year suspension is ‘devastating’ for high-flying Galahad

Sheffield’s Kid Galahad has faced many tough opponents during his rise in the boxing world yet his latest fight outside of the ring may be his hardest yet. The 25-year-old, real name Abdul Barry Awad, was handed a two-year ban from boxing earlier this month after testing positive for steroids in a urine sample given to officials in September last year. Galahad claims it was in fact his brother, Mageed, who spiked his protein drink after a ‘disagreement’ they had and was now facing a long-term exile from the sport. A sworn signed statement from Mageed, who is currently in prison on unrelated charges, has been handed over to the officials yet the National Anti-Doping Panel still opted to hand down the 24-month suspension. Boasting 18 wins from 18 bouts, the former European champ said it did not make sense for him to take the drugs and said he will fight to clear his name. “What can I say, other than I am totally gutted,” the 25-year-old told the Daily Star. “This will stall my career dramatically. “I’m absolutely devastated especially as I have not done anything wrong and have never taken a steroid in my life. “The one thing about it which makes it even worse is that it involves a member of my family, my brother. He did it following a disagreement we had. “I told my mum and sister, and eventually my sister went to see my brother, who is in jail, and he admitted doing this. “I don’t know anything about the drug other than you would take it to allow you to get bigger, which in my case makes no sense at all. “I walk around Sheffield at around the lightweight limit so I have to be very disciplined and careful about what I eat and how I train because I box at super bantam. “Bulking up does not and would not help me at all and apparently this drug would help you get bigger. “That’s not what I want, so why would I take it?”

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE –

BOXER JAMES DEGALE By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

British Olympic champion James DeGale (21-1 14KO) was in action this past weekend against tough American Andre Dirrell (24-2 16KO). DeGale proved his determination and grit as he boxed Dirrell to get an early lead on the scorecards and then managed to finish the bout strongly to become the first English Olympic gold medal winner to capture a world super middleweight title. During the entertaining boxing bout Dirrell’s hand speed caused DeGale problems as he suffered a cut to his eye, but the English man showed power in his punches as he managed to knock Dirrell down, twice, near the end of the second round. DeGale showed great boxing skill, movement and timing to control the pace of the fight. However Dirrell managed to get back into the fight in the later rounds with great combination punching until Degale finished strongly in the championship rounds. DeGale can now be considered as one of the top super middleweights in the world as he has captured the recognised IBF world championship title and has previously beaten credible opponents like Brandon Gonzales. DeGale eventually got the title fight after becoming the mandatory challenger for the IBF title with champion Carl Froch vacating the title rather than fight him. DeGale has been waiting for his world championship opportunity patiently for a number of years after receiving several

Khalil Alam

career knock backs, lack of boxing opportunity and career disappointments and when the opportunity finally presented itself he manage to capture it convincingly. One of the biggest career disappointments for DeGale was his only defeat against his boxing rival George Groves and DeGale has said he is now ready to fight Groves in a rematch and prove his worthiness as a world champion. He said “there's a massive fight with George Groves down the line, and hopefully he wins that world title in America, but I'm easy. There are so many fights out there. I'm in boxing for the big fights. Obviously I'd like to fight (Groves) again and get the win over him, but let's just let him do his job first and win that WBC title. George Groves will be challenging WBC world champion Badou Jack in the United States and will be the favourite to win the championship. The other potential opponents for DeGale in the near future could be a re-match with Dirrell because their first bout was entertaining to watch and all action from the first bell in a closely contested fight. Andre Ward who is the universally recognised as the best super middleweight in the world even though DeGale does not think Ward will want to fight him. Carl Froch who has already said that he may retire from boxing for good and Gennady Golovkin who is eager to get a meaningful fight by moving up in weight class from middle weight to super middleweight. My initial thoughts about DeGale’s future big fight is that he must take on Groves in a IBF, WBC unification fight possibly at Wembley Stadium in the UK (should Groves win his title bout against Jack). Also in my opinion DeGale taking on the likes of Golovkin or Ward at this stage of his career (newly crowned world champion) will be suicide due to lack of championship experience. I would personally like him to defend his IBF title against some meaningful mandatory contenders before he sets he sights on the potential best in the world.

OUT: Indonesia will not be legible to compete in the next round of 2018 World Cup qualifiers

The Indonesian Football Association has been suspended by football's world governing body FIFA because of government meddling in the Southeast Asian country's domestic league. The ban means Indonesia will be ineligible to compete in the next round of qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup and 2019 Asian Cup, starting on 11th June, unless they meet FIFA's demands. However, FIFA did allow Indonesia's national team to continue playing at the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore because the tournament has already started. “The Executive decided to suspend the Indonesia Football

Association (PSSI) with immediate effect and until the PSSI would be able to comply with its obligations under arts. 13 and 17 of the FIFA Statutes,” FIFA announced on Saturday. “This decision resulted from the effective ‘take over’ of the activities of PSSI by the Indonesian authorities. “However, and as an exceptional measure, the national team would be allowed to continue their current participation in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games.” Indonesia are scheduled to play Taiwan on 11th June and Iraq five days later in matches that double as qualifiers for the next World and Asian Cups.

All roads lead to Canada Following a somewhat subdued start to the 2015 Formula One season, Force India’s team principal remains confident his side has what it takes to climb up the constructor and driver standings. Last month, the Sahara owned team claimed a credible six points in Monaco as Sergio Perez came home in seventh spot for his best finish of the year. The Mexican’s teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, narrowly missed out on the single point finish and will be hoping for a better performance in the next scheduled race in Canada,

Montreal prepares for Formula One invasion where he picked up a massive ten points last year. Team Principal, Dr Vijay Mallya, reflected on the points gained in Monaco and says he now looks forward to the challenge of Montreal. “Coming away from Monaco with six points was a fantastic result. I’ve been saying we need to maximise our opportunities and continue picking up points, and that’s exactly what we delivered in Monaco. Sergio was outstanding all weekend and we could not have asked any more of him. It was a very

mature performance and a well-deserved result. Nico also showed his class, but bad luck kept him just outside the points. “The Monaco result keeps us well placed in the championship. We’re in sixth place and have scored points in half of the races so far this season. That’s a tremendous achievement and I’m extremely proud of everyone in the team. It keeps us where we need to be as we work hard to add more performance to the car.

RETURN: Last year Nico Hulkenberg finished fifth in the Canadian Grand Prix and says he is ready to take on the Montreal circuit once again this month

“The team is in a good place as we head to Canada. We’ve often gone well in Montreal and it’s one of those races where anything can happen – as we saw last year with Nico challenging for the victory. The track layout means it should be one of our better circuits so it’s another opportunity to continue our fight for fifth place in the championship.” Drivers will take to the Canadian track on Sunday 11th June where Daniel Ricciardo picked up the winner’s trophy last year.

Khan defeats spirited Algieri Welterweight champ still has eyes on Mayweather bout Back page story continued “I felt like I landed the cleaner, harder shots,” he said. “When that final bell rang, I felt it was definitely my fight.” Khan was on the back-foot during some of the early rounds with Algieri’s tactics proving difficult for Khan to find his natural rhythm. Walking in on the British boxer, he prevented Khan from utilising his speed advantage, nullifying his major threat and landing a number of blows to the body. However, as the bout progressed, Khan showed why he is champion, changing his own tactics and adjusting his own fight to leave his opponent on the ropes in the final rounds. Speaking in the ring straight after the decision was announced,

Khan said: “Everyone knows I would love to fight Floyd next, but when you wait for something this long and hope for it this long, it can set you back.” Adding: “Mayweather is a champion. So let’s make it happen.” Whether Khan will now get the dream Mayweather fight remains unknown with fellow British boxer, Kell Brook, looking an ever more likely opponent. ‘Special K’, is currently ranked third in the welterweight division, only behind Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. His victory on Saturday over Frankie Gavin, maintained his perfect professional record and following the fight he once again proposed the all-English bout. “I thought after winning the belt it would happen. Khan must be scared,” Brook added.

Britain’s sport chiefs have called on Europe to boycott future World Cups if Sepp Blatter does not step down as head of football’s governing body, following his latest successful election campaign last week. The Swiss-born FIFA President won a vote on Friday to serve a fifth term in the position after his only competing candidate, Prince Ali Bin al-Hussein, stepped aside following a first round of results. Blatter complained on Sunday he had been shown ‘zero respect’ in recent days, after the US Department of Justice charged nine football officials with corruption and Swiss authorities are conducting their own criminal investigation. John Whittingdale, the British government minister with overall responsibility for sport, renewed calls for Blatter to step aside on Sunday, saying all options should be considered when it came to pressuring him to resign, including boycotting the World Cup something that could split the sport and be calamitous for the tournament. He has played down the impact of the corruption scandal on one of the world's most powerful sports bodies, which takes in billions of dollars in revenue from TV marketing rights and sponsorships. Blatter is not accused of any wrongdoing personally and has implied that the United States timed news of the charges to try to scupper his re-election. Asked how he had coped with the

Khan defeats spirited Algieri

CHAMP: Amir Khan defeated Chris Algieri after 12 rounds and once again reiterated his desire for a Mayweather showdown

Welterweight champ still has eyes on Mayweather bout

WE NEED YOU!

Amir Khan’s quest for a blockbuster bout against Floyd Mayweather continued last weekend as he convincingly triumphed over Chris Algieri in New York. The WBC champion made it five wins from five since his loss to Danny Garcia almost three years ago and continued his unbeaten record in the welterweight division. A unanimous point’s decision, 117111, 117-111 and 115-113, was the verdict of the three judges following 12 competitive rounds at the Barclay’s Centre, yet the Bolton boxer certainly didn’t have everything go his way in the early exchanges. 31-year-old Algieri gave a spirited performance throughout and said following the final bell that he believed he had done enough to win.
