A prominent French politician alerted police when she spotted a Muslim woman wearing a black niqab in Paris, in breach of a controversial law banning facecovering veils. Nadine Morano, a member of the centre-right UMP (Union for a Popular Movement) party, came across the woman at Paris Est train station. The 51-year-old Member of the EU Parliament (MEP) wrote on Facebook that she could not tell if the Islam-faithful was a man or a woman as ‘he/she’ was covered from head to toe ‘with only the eyes left exposed’. “I reminded (them) that such (an) outfit is banned in France and that he or she had to uncover her face to walk in public areas,” Morano wrote. The woman, who had most likely just arrived in Paris as Morano said she was carrying luggage, ignored the female politician and walked away,

according to Morano ‘in total disregard’. Not considering that perhaps the woman didn’t understand French and hence the reason for not responding, Morano reported her presence to police. The MEP claimed that facecovering veils pose a security threat to the public, as they conceal identity. "It's allowed to be suspicious when (a person) hides," she wrote. "Our vigilance must be flawless in this period of radicalization of communal behaviours and of jihadi indoctrination.” However, more interestingly was her outburst - according to a police report on the incident published by France Blue radio. Morano went berserk as police officers didn't recognise her and failed to stop the veiled woman. Described in the report as "extremely aggressive and very nervous", the MEP allegedly

asked police if they ever watched television. "I'm a minister!" she shouted, according to the report. Morano served as minister for Family Affairs and later for Apprenticeship and Professional Formation under the presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy. Under a law that came into effect in 2011 in France, women who cover their faces in a number of public spaces, such as in the street, can be fined up to €150 or be obliged to attend a citizenship class, or both. The European Court of Human Rights recently dismissed a complaint that the rule breached freedom of religious rights, maintaining that covering one's face in public can be considered an anti-social behaviour. France is home to about five million Muslims - the largest Muslim population in Western Europe - but it is estimated that only about 2,000 women wear full veils.

PTI to end sit-in if PM reveals all assets Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan said this week that he would wind up his 68-day sit-in on one condition. Khan has called for Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to honestly declare all of his assets. He added that he would consider softening his stance of staying put at the D-Chowk with his supporter till the premier resigned. The announcement follows a shift in the PTI’s focus from its sit-in near the Parliament House to holding public gatherings in different cities to compel the government to announce re-elections over allegations of rigging in the last year’s polls. “I will call off the sit-in if you, Mr Nawaz Sharif, are ready to declare your ‘real assets’ before the nation,” he said while addressing the participants of the sit-in. “I believe Nawaz Sharif may himself not be aware of all of his huge assets in and outside the country,” he said. Addressing PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, he said: “I will recognise you as leader if you ask your uncle Nawaz Sharif and your father Asif Ali Zardari to declare before the nation their `real assets’ which they earned after a lot of`hard work’. If you fail then I will perform this task.” He said Mr Zardari was raising questions about the funding of the PTI’s sit-in and rallies. “Your party

spent a huge amount for its recent public meeting in Karachi. The same amount will be enough to carry on the PTI sit-in for three years,” he said. He added: “We just use a container and a sound system” and the PTI’s supporters participated in gatherings without any pressure. Mr Khan invited a TV channel and its anchor facing suspension of licence by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority and a ban on the directives of a Lahore

High Court judge to run their programme from his container. He demanded a Rs15 decrease in petroleum prices and announced that his party would protest on Wednesday outside district press clubs across the country against a hike in electricity tariff. “My dear supporters, your training is under way during the sit-in and it is possible that someone among you may become the chairperson of the PTI in future,” he said.

Govinda says no to Salman Despite their very close long-term friendship, it seems that Govinda has refused to act in Salman Khan's Hindi remake of Mahesh Manjrekar's hit film 'Shikshanachya Aaicha Gho'. The movie is a 2010 Indian Marathi film directed by Mahesh Manjrekar which was later

remade in Tamil & Telugu as Dhoni and in Bengali as 'Chalo Paltai' starring Prosenjit Chatterjee. Govinda said he is not keen on starring in an arty movie and that Salman said he would make a few changes in the script, but when the script went back to Govinda, he just wasn’t interested.

Govinda was quoted saying: “I thought it's a very arty film and I don't want to do an arty film at least with Salman Khan”. Talking about his bonding with Salman, he added, 'We had a great time shooting together for Partner. He is a very dear friend. We are almost the same.'

“As the world celebrates the festival of lights let us all embrace the true spirit of Diwali: the victory of light over darkness, and hope over despair. “At this special time of year I know millions of people around the world and here in the UK will come together to mark this joyous festival with family, friends, feasts and fireworks. “When we hear so much about tragedy and misery in our world it is at times like Diwali that we can reflect on all the incredibly positive and generous things that people and communities do for others. “This is why it is important as a country we celebrate our religions. I am proud that Diwali and other important festivals such as Easter, Eid,

Vaisakhi and Hanukkah are freely observed and celebrated – by people of faith and none. They are reminders of the countless positive things that we have in common and show us that good will always triumph over evil. “Diwali also shines a light on Britain’s Indian community and allows us to think about the astonishing contribution they have made to our country. And this is not just about what we all see and benefit from today: the businesses they run; the jobs they create and the great public and professional services they provide. It is a contribution that goes back many years. As we commemorate a century since the outbreak of the First World War we recall a conflict

in which hundreds of thousands of men from India travelled far from home to help the Allies defeat tyranny in the fight for the freedoms we enjoy today. “As well as looking back we can also look forward with great confidence about the future in the knowledge that British Indians will continue to excel and be at the forefront of our society, helping to take Britain from strength to strength. “I am sure that as Diwali is celebrated here in Britain many people will be thinking about their loved ones in India, underlining the peopleto-people connections between our two great countries. “These deeply personal links are just one part of the great friendship between

Britain and India. It is a strong and vibrant relationship that works in so many ways: from the economy to education; from science to sport. I very much look forward to continuing to build on this historic and invaluable friendship for the benefit of both our peoples. “So whether you are in the UK or India, whether you are Hindu, Sikh or Jains – to everyone celebrating the festival of lights around the world I wish you a very peaceful and happy Diwali.”

A vow to clear his name Former police officer who quit force over wife-beating says he’ll pursue legal action after sexual assault allegations A former police officer who was cleared of a string of sexual offences this month, now insists that he was the victim of 'institutional racism' by his former police force. 39-year-old Mustaq Patala, from Blackburn, Lancashire was forced to quit the force back in 2011 for beating his wife, after she claimed that he had subjected her to a long campaign of violence which began in 1999 during her pregnancy. His conviction for assaulting his wife resulted in Patala landing 180 hours unpaid work. After Patala completed community service, he travelled for pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia but was then was detained again on his return after two women alleged that he had sexually assaulted them. Patala, a father-of-three, faced two trials accused of 14 charges of rape, three of sexual assault and another charge of perverting justice. A trial opened last year but had to be abandoned due to legal problems. A second trial judge then decided not guilty verdicts should be entered after a week of submissions. But a judge at Preston Crown Court threw out the case earlier this month following legal submissions.

Patala was cleared of rape and sexual assault at Preston Crown Court and now claims police failed to fully investigate the claims made against him. Patala - who was once one of the youngest Asian police inspectors in Britain - has now vowed to take legal action against Lancashire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service claiming he had been a victim of 'jealousy' in the force due to his 'meteoric' rise through the ranks. He said that institutional racism exists profoundly within the police service. He told a regional newspaper that whilst awaiting trial he had spent time in prison and said that he had to notify the prison staff that he was an ex-police officer and may come into contact with people he had arrested whilst in the force. He said that he was kept behind closed doors 23-hours a day for protection. After joining the police, Patala - a former school governor - was quickly promoted to inspector to oversee neighbourhood policing and was well-known locally. He had helped introduce reforms in the constabulary and his performance in police exams was said to among the

best in the country. He says other officers were jealous of his quick rise through the force and the sex charges should never have been brought against him Explaining the case, a CPS spokesman said: “After receiving medical evidence relating to the complainant in this case the prosecution applied to the judge to have the evidence given by the complainant in an earlier trial adduced as hearsay evidence in this trial. 'After hearing legal argument from prosecution and defence about this issue the judge refused the application and the CPS decided that in these circumstances it would not be appropriate to require the complainant to give evidence. 'We concluded that there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction against any of the defendants and therefore offered no evidence at court. 'We take all cases of alleged sexual offences extremely seriously, however the health and welfare of alleged victims remains one of our prime considerations.'

Police ‘concerned’ for safety of teen in latest appeal

APPEAL: Sabeela Waid was last seen by her family at the end of September and has made no contact with them since

Police in the West Midlands are growing ‘deeply concerned’ about a missing teenager from Sandwell who has not been seen by her parents since the end of last month. 14-year-old Sabeela Waid has been missing for three weeks since her initial disappearance on Sunday 28th December and has had no contact with her family. The teen was last seen in Walter Street, West Bromwich, around midday and is known to frequently visit Walsall and Darlaston in particular. She has been missing several times in the past yet local authorities say they are concerned for her safety due to the prolonged period of time passed since her last contact. Detective Inspector Mick Spellman, from Sandwell’s Public Protection Unit, said: “We have been speaking to a number of people whom Sabeela is known to have had contact with, but so far our efforts have failed to trace her. “In view of her age, we are deeply concerned for Sabeela’s welfare and would urge anyone who knows of her whereabouts to get in touch. “I would also appeal to Sabeela directly to contact her family and let them know that she is safe.” Sabeela is described as Asian around 5ft 3" tall and of slim build. Anyone who can help in the search for Sabeela is asked to call police on 101 or alternatively information can be given anonymously to the Missing People charity on 116 000.

DWP launches awareness campaign for claimants

6

NEWS

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) launched a major advertising campaign today targeted at nearly 50 towns and cities across the country. A range of television and radio adverts, posters, letters and Facebook ads will be used in each region to urge claimants to report changes in their circumstances or risk a jail sentence. The advert displays a map pin icon landing on the region and tells claimants if their circumstances have changed to ‘call us to update your claim before we call you.’ Department for Work and Pensions Minister Mark Harper said: “We are giving benefit claimants

every opportunity to tell us if their circumstances have changed, as the majority do. But those who cheat the system need to know we will use everything in our power to stop them stealing money from hardworking taxpayers, and that they could land themselves in jail when they’re caught. “Our fraud investigators have new and better methods of detecting benefit cheats so it’s becoming harder to hide and more difficult to escape punishment.” Ministers are highlighting the types of fraud that are hiking up the estimated £1.1 billion benefit fraud bill (2013/14): People who fail to tell us a partner

has moved in. People who don’t notify us if there is more money coming in. The campaign also appeals to members of the public to call the benefit fraud hotline if they suspect someone is claiming benefits illegally. Calls to the hotline topped 150,000 in the last year, an average of more than 600 calls every working day. Ministers have also announced that there is a new tool in the armoury for cracking down on benefit fraud, with the ability to now cross-check benefit claims against Real Time Information (RTI) on earnings and pension income from HMRC. Previously this data was submitted by employers annually,

potentially resulting in thousands of pounds of overpayments before discovering fraud or an error. In the last year the Government recovered more than £1.3 billion in fraudulent payments. In addition to RTI, it has also introduced a raft of measures to counter benefit fraud: Introducing tough new rules so that 40% of individuals’ benefits can be taken to repay stolen cash - on top of any fine or custodial sentence handed out by the courts; Increasing penalties that someone committing fraud can receive from £2,000 to £5,000, without taking them to court; Using bailiffs to confiscate high-

‘Birmingham Balti’ –

value possessions from convicted benefit fraudsters; Continuing to roll out Universal Credit to more sites, which is expected to reduce fraud by £1 billion in 5 years when it is fully in place across the country; Extending the loss of benefit for offences which result in a conviction of 13 weeks for a first offence, then 26 weeks for a second offence and 3 years for a third offence; Issuing a new £50 civil penalty for claimants who negligently give incorrect information on their claim or fail to report a change in circumstances which results in an overpayment.

Invented or inherited

City bids to protect iconic curry dish Cover story continued

INHERITANCE: Mr Aslam claims that the balti dish was created in the North West of Pakistan

The Birmingham Balti Association (BBA), on the other hand, want to protect what they see as one of the city’s most loved ‘inventions’ and have thus applied for protection to ensure every Balti is a ‘Birmingham Balti’. Three years ago, an official bid was made to get the title officially registered as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed’ (TSG) product. A TSG is issued by the European Union to council and producers if they can show that their food or drink is produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using recognised know how. After a short opposition period in the hands of the Intellectual Property Office, the bid was handed over to the country’s bureaucrats. Ever since, the application has been passed forward and backwards on a couple of occasions with the bid still yet to be approved or disproved. If successful at this stage, the request will be handed over to the European Union where it will once again go through a similar process. However, the bid has been shrugged off by leading restaurant owners in separate parts of the country including Aagrah’s Managing Director, Mohammed Aslam MBE, and Zouk Managing Director, Tayub Amjad. Mr Aslam states that the dish was originally conceived in Pakistan before the early 80’s and Birmingham merely ‘inherited’ the recipe. “The balti dish is originated

from North West Pakistan,” Mr Aslam said. “Birmingham cannot ‘patent’ the dish as such because it is not their invention, rather an inheritance. “It's a dish that pathans enjoy, and it's a traditional dish for them. The balti dish is followed by pathans throughout the world as they believe it is their innovation. “It cannot be registered as Birmingham balti.” Likewise, Mr Amjad added that he didn’t believe Birmingham can gain legal recognition of the balti dish. He added: “First of all I don’t think the balti came from Birmingham and it is ridiculous that they would try to achieve the TSG status. “Indian and Pakistani food quite clearly originates from them countries and any dishes created in England have a background from the subcontinent.” Andy Munro, advisor to the BBA, has been a leading figure in the Birmingham Balti bid from day one and despite accepting that it may be a long time yet before the recognition can be official, he remains optimistic of its success. Speaking about his first experiences of the dish, Mr Munro said: “I am a born and bred Brummie who has grown up eating curries. “I remember going out with friends when I was younger and tasting all these red hot curries before, one day, I had my first balti. “It was so different to what I had tasted and I had never heard of the dish before.” In the application a Birmingham Balti is characterised as ‘a dish cooked in a thin pressed steel pan which

is fast cooked using fresh ingredients and spices which are added individually. The key characteristic is that the cooked dish is served straight from the traditional Balti dish in which it is cooked and from which it obtains its name.’ Mr Munro, a previous advisor to the Asian Balti Restaurant Association (ABRA), has researched the history of the Balti so far as to even publish books on the curry. Examples of the history include the alleged first recorded reference to the balti in July 1982, when an advert in ‘The Heathen’, a local newspaper, advertised the availability of Balti in a restaurant. A recent book of curries from around the world, split by country only, also mentions the balti in the section on British food. In it Roopa Gulati writes: “Having more in common with Birmingham than Pakistan, baltis are the star attraction for curry aficionados.” For Mr Munro, who has spent years championing the balti, there is no doubt in his mind that it is a ‘culinary invention’ straight from the Birmingham kitchen. “People are always going to argue about the origins of anything, but I am absolutely certain that the balti is a Birmingham invention,” he said. “When people enjoy a curry it really is a delight. For me, there is nothing nicer than enjoying a genuine balti and I think it’s extremely important for Britain to safeguard its culinary inventions.” In the UK, there are currently 62 protected food names, yet bids for such trademarks regularly take years to be fully considered.

National Langar Week

October/November 2014 - 1st Edition FREE: A huge pot of food is stirred up at the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha which is handed out free of charge to people who visit the site in need of a meal

FAMILY: A mother and her son enjoy the free meal in Leeds

Celebrating the ‘world’s oldest soup kitchen’ For more than 500 years, Sikhs around the world have been preparing, sharing and eating food, known as ‘langar’, with the wider community. Now, as the nationwide need for foodbanks and soup kitchens continues to grow, seven days of awareness are being held to promote the concept to all people in need of a free meal. Langar is a term used to describe the free kitchen and food initiative that is served to visitors at a Sikh Gurdwara. A central part of their religion, the concept was designed by the founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in the 15th century, in order to uphold the principle of equality between all people regardless of their background. In Leeds, the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha (GNNSJ) is just one Gurdwara which provides langar to those who visit the site, 365 days a year. Operating an open door policy, any person, of any faith, is welcome to visit the place of worship for a free meal. GNNSJ Chairman, Harbans Singh Sagoo, explained how important it was for greater awareness to be created to help people ‘struggling in society’. “Wherever you go in the world, a Gurdwara will provide a free meal when it can,” Mr Sagoo said. “In Leeds there are at

CHAIRMAN: Mr Sagoo from GNNSJ in Leeds

least two that provide langar every day and we regularly have a diverse range of people coming down to use the service. “People are facing more and more problems now because of the economy and this has brought forward the concept of foodbanks. “We as the Sikh community want to let people know that the system of langar is available to them and by having this National Langar Week, we are attempting to create more awareness.” He added: “Our scriptures say that ‘where the spirit of God prevails, nobody should go hungry’ and we must practice our faith, not just preach it. “Langar is a concept that can help people, particularly those who are homeless or socially deprived, and so we must help who we can.” Every meal served is

suitable for vegetarians as to cater for people of all beliefs, including Muslim (halal) and Jewish (kosher), regardless of where the gurdwara is in the world. The central gurdwara for the Sikh faith, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and serve up to 50,000 meals a day free of charge and that number can increase to more than 80,000 during celebrations. Mr Sagoo said he does everything he can to ensure all people are catered for when they come to the door of the Beeston-based Gurdwara yet accepted that there are sometimes challenges to overcome. “Langar has been abused in the past with people who are perhaps drunk or on drugs coming to the gurdwara and being disruptive. “This causes a conflict, because as men of faith we need to show compassion, yet they cannot come in to the place of worship if they are behaving poorly. “Therefore, we invested in plastic boxes to carry food so now if someone comes to the door and is drunk or disorderly, we give them the food in a box to take away and eat. “We would still much rather people come inside to sit down and talk to us because that is how you forge friendships and learn about each other’s lives.” National Langar Week is officially held this year between 1st and 7th November.

“Can I have a ‘local’ driver?” Minicab firm asked for white drivers after grooming scandal

After two drivers of Pakistani origin were arrested for their part in a child sex-grooming scandal, a taxi firm in Rochdale say they are now receiving 60 calls a week asking for a white driver. The town’s minicab firm, Car 2000, has been allowing customers to make such requests after it was revealed that the former company, Eagles Taxis – bought out by the new firm – were at the centre of the scandal. Car 2000 manager, Stephen Campbell, told the Guardian newspaper that ‘quite a lot’ of customers had been phoning the firm requesting a ‘local’ driver. “[It is] A bit insane if you consider that most of the [Asian] lads were born in Rochdale. But it’s a business and we have got a duty to do what the customer asks us to,” Mr Campbell said. “‘I don’t think we can discriminate against the customer in the same way. It is a business at the end of the day. We have a large bank loan to pay back.” Two men were jailed for their part in the sex trafficking and rape of young white girls, which also resulted in 20 drivers leaving Eagle Taxis after one had his life threatened and another’s car was smashed up. Costing the business an estimated £40,000, 30 per cent of the business’s annual profit, the business suffered from the bad publicity and Mr Campbell urged passengers to see what the Asian driver ‘are all about’. He said: “The Asian drivers are harder working,

they do what they are asked and they don’t complain about it. “If the public could actually see these [Asian] people close up and see what they are about, I don’t think they would be asking for white drivers. “We do get a lot of customers ringing up and asking us for a particular Asian guy as well.” Earlier this month, the area of Heywood and Middleton had a byelection whereby Ukip ran a campaign focussing on the issues of child grooming and immigration. The party was only 617 votes away from overturning a near 6,000 Labour majority, something MP for Rochdale, Simon Danczuk, says is extremely worrying. He said: “This is extremely worrying and a stark reminder of the impact that grooming scandals have had on northern towns. This will not be a problem exclusive to our borough, I’m sure. “It must act as a wake-up call to politicians who just pretend tensions like this don’t exist and bury their heads in the sand. “There’s a lot of work to do to improve race relations and if we’re going to build stronger communities then we have to tackle these concerns head-on.”

Family takes charity to heart in fundraising efforts

£100,000 raised in EIGHT years Over the past decade, the Govindbhai Foundation has been raising thousands of pounds for local causes in Bradford and their latest event has taken their total donations well above the £100,000 mark. Set up by a team of nine brothers and sisters, who got together with their mum, spouses, children and grandchildren, the Foundation is a unique family-run operation. In the short time since 2007, the registered charity has held an annual dinner dance which raises funds for a cause close to home and one in Gujarat, India. This year, the Fulfil the Wish initiative and Saraswati Vidyalay UK charities were selected to benefit from the fundraising efforts, which eventually totalled £12,700. Cheques were handed over last weekend to both causes, with the dinner dance, a Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge and a four-year-old’s testing three-kilometre run, helping to raise the funds. The Govindbhai Foundation, (GBF) established by the family of local resident, Harkishan Mistry, and named after his late father, has raised £110,000 for various charities over the

past eight years. Mr Mistry, speaking on behalf of the foundation, explained how this year’s activities had helped the group smash through their latest milestone after expanding their fundraising efforts past the annual dinner dance. “This year we took a new approach to fundraising,” he explained. “In addition to our dinner-dance, four members of the family took on the challenge of the Yorkshire Three Peaks climb, whilst one of the youngest members, Rohan Mistry, ran 3km to raise money for the GBF. “It's so satisfying to see the younger members of the family getting involved and best of all, we've spent eight years successfully fundraising while having fun. “I'm delighted that once again we managed to raise so much money. It'll make a huge difference to children's lives.” One of the charities that benefited from this year’s donations was the aforementioned Fulfil the Wish charity which provides activity and sightseeing holidays for children and young people with disabilities and complex health needs. Mary Appleton, a former nurse and founder of the

charity, said she wanted to express a ‘massive thank you’ to the GBF for a total donation of £6,350. Ms Appleton added: “All the money will go directly to funding a special holiday to the Bendrigg Trust in May 2015, enabling 25 children with a range of disabilities to have the unique opportunity to experience the thrill and excitement of activities such as the zip wire, climbing wall, abseiling and much more. “I want to say thank you so much for everything they have done, you have no idea of how much happiness this will bring to some amazing children and just how much I appreciate what they have done.” Hasmukh Shah, National coordinator of Saraswati Vidyalay added his thanks for their identical donation. “I am very thankful to the trustees of the Bradford-based charity GBF who are sponsoring five one-teacher schools for five years in a remote part of Nepal,” he said. “Children in these impoverished tribal areas will be empowered through basic literacy education. Although GBF is local it continues to support many worthwhile causes worldwide.”

Elizabeth R," the 88-year-old monarch tweeted at the opening of a new gallery at London's Science Museum. The message, sent at 10.35am, had already been re-tweeted more than 4,000 times less than 45 minutes later. The queen's official Twitter account @BritishMonarchy, which is run by royal aides has issued almost 19,000 messages since its inception in 2009, and has some 750,000 followers.

Brit charged over terror offences

A British man was charged on Friday with preparing terrorism acts after being arrested in one of a series of raids in recent weeks, police said. Tuhin Shahensha, 26, from Portsmouth, southeast England, intended to travel to Syria and fight in the country's ongoing civil war, London's Westminster Magistrates' Court heard. Shahensha was arrested by the South East Counter Terrorism Unit (SECTU) last week alongside three others. A 23-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were still in custody while a woman, 29, from Greenwich in southeast London was released without charge, SECTU said in a statement. Britain raised its international threat level to the second-highest classification of ‘severe’ in August and police chiefs say counter-terrorism operations are running at an exceptionally high pace not seen in years.

Sky’s the limit

Daredevil fundraiser set to plunge thousands of feet

GIVING: Satnam Singh will take part in a skydive next month as he looks to raise money for Kirkwood Hospice

The last thing any person with a fear of heights would want to do is fly thousands of metres above the ground. Yet for one self-confessed ‘acrophobe’, he will be going one step further next month as he takes a leap of faith with only an instructor and parachute on his back. Satnam Singh, from Huddersfield, will plunge from the skies at speeds of up to 120mph as he takes part in a sponsored skydive for his local Kirkwood Hospice. The father-of-two was inspired to take part in the challenge by his aunt, who sadly passed away earlier this year after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. She was taken to Kirkwood Hospice for care in her final days and Satnam says it was the ‘amazing care’ given to his relative that motivated him to give something back to the charity. “Her final days were made as comfortable as possible at the hospice, with amazing staff and facilities on hand 24 hours a day ensuring she always received the best care,” he said. “I decided I wanted to do something to thank those who had helped our family and so I looked down the list of what fundraising activities I could do and that is when I saw skydiving. “I have never liked heights but I thought, why not push myself mentally as well to really help raise more money for the hospice.” The 38-year-old will take part in the skydive at the start of November after his initial ‘jump-date’ had to be postponed due to the weather. Free-falling for a minute before the parachute is deployed, Satnam says he is nervously excited about the day. He added: “The thing I’m most nervous about is queuing up at the door of the plane getting ready to jump out. “It is a tandem jump so there will be an instructor on my back but I’m guessing I won’t have much choice as to when we go.” So far, Satnam has raised around £2,500, surpassing his fundraising target thanks to a large donation from his work, the Marsh-based Mann and Associates. Kirkwood Hospice fundraiser Dawn Walker thanked Satnam for his fundraising efforts which are vital in helping to fund the hopsice’s day-today running costs. She said: “We really appreciate Satnam getting behind our Make a Difference Day campaign. “He has raised a fantastic amount for the Hospice already and is still fundraising. The fact that he is facing his biggest fear makes his efforts even more special. “Without the wonderful support of people like Satnam, we simply couldn’t continue to provide our services for the people of Kirklees.” To sponsor Satnam please visit his donations page at www.justgiving.co.uk/satnam-singh1/

CHAMPIONS: Members of Bradford’s Curry Capital winning team celebrate the news of their victory, taking an unprecedented four titles in a row

Bradford clinches Curry Capital Crown

Four in a row! If it wasn’t already a foregone conclusion it is now. Bradford is the official Curry Capital of Britain after once again clinching the title earlier this month. Seeing off competition from major cities across the country, West Yorkshire’s reigning champions made it an unprecedented four wins in a row, as the team of restaurants and members of Visit Bradford, excelled in this year’s contest. The 2014 title bid included a number of initiatives and activities, such as a series of poppadom challenges, an Asian afternoon tea and a healthy-style Asian cookbook created in connection with the NHS. Peter Grove, organiser and founder of the contest, was full of praise for Bradford’s outstanding effort, with the city’s score increasing nearly nine per cent on last year's total. “It is as if they have found the magic formula,” he said. “Of all the competing cities they have understood the underlying message of the event to promote cohesion where there was division and have used curry as a bonding agent to bring different aspects of Bradford’s society together. “As well as curry lovers and restaurateurs, they managed to bring together local businesses...They managed to portray the local pride they have in all things ‘Bradford’ so much so that we will be using their approach as a blueprint for next year.” The Curry Capital of Britain is an annual competition which sees cities from all over the UK compete to be crowned the nation’s Curry Capital. This year, 20 cities and regions including Birmingham, Leeds, and London took part in the contest, which involved hosting a number of fundraising initiatives with proceeds going to The Curry Tree charity. Bradford’s successful bid was

masterminded by the Visit Bradford team and the restaurant quartet of Aakash, Kipling's, Shimla Spice and Zaara's. Azhar Mahmood, restaurant manager at Aakash, praised the efforts of the whole city who ‘supported’ the city’s project throughout. “It’s hard to put into words what this award means to us,” he said. “All praises and thanks go to all the customers who have supported the restaurants, and the restaurants that have supported the city. “I think together as Bradford we just love our curry.” Iftikhar Hussain, restaurant manager at Shimla Spice and Mohammed Rafiq, of Kipling's, reiterated Mr Mahmood’s comments. “I am very proud to be a Bradfordian right now,” Mr Rafiq said. “We have basically become the elite when it comes to the Indian curry industry and have surpassed Glasgow’s record of three titles. “This event is extremely prestigious and it goes to show the amount of effort that has been put into the award. It proves a point that we are still number one here in England and even around the world. “When people think Bradford they think curry.” Patricia Tillotson, tourism manager at Visit Bradford, added: “Winning the hotly contested competition this many times in a row is a first and we’re pleased to have set the bar so high. “It’s been a pleasure to work with this year’s team in our bid to be crowned Curry Capital of Britain for the fourth consecutive year.” Visit Bradford will be presented with its award during a ceremony taking place next week in Bradford.

More reasons to celebrate...

Cleckheaton’s Aakash restaurant had further reasons to cheer as they followed up the city’s Curry Capital title with another award of their own. Now in its fourth year, the curry awards commend restaurants over a range of fields with different regions receiving a host of nominations. Based on a public vote, this year’s winner of the ‘Restaurant of the Year’ accolade for the Yorkshire region was Aakash, who received their trophy and certificate at an event in Salford earlier this week. Success in the contest comes just days after Bradford was confirmed as the Curry Capital for the fourth year running and for restaurant manager, Azhar Mahmood, it was hard to put into words what the accolade means. “It does leave you a bit lost for words really,” Mr Mahmood said. “To have been voted as the top restaurant in the region by our diners is a fantastic achievement. “Bradford and Yorkshire as a whole is full of some amazing restaurants so to have been singled out in the region is a very proud moment.” Mr Mahmood added that he now has his fingers crossed that Aakash could potentially pull off a clean sweep in this year’s most prestigious curry awards. “We’ve won the Curry Capital bid and now this award and so the only major one left is the British Curry Awards which I think are in December,” he added. “It has already been a fantastic year and I can only hope that it finishes in a similar manner.”

Young people are switched on to the danger of online grooming through a new video which warns of the tricks used by paedophiles to target victims. The 'Who Are You Really Talking To?' video makes it clear just how easy it is for young victims to be conned by predators posing as teenagers to lure them into sexual exploitation. The video, which was filmed with actors, shows a teenage girl swapping messages with who she thinks is a teenage boy, who asks her to meet. In reality he is an older man hiding behind a false profile which he uses to attract youngsters. It is the latest part of the 'Know The Signs' campaign which highlights the issues of child sexual exploitation and encourages victims to report it. A 'Who Are You Really Talking To?' advertising campaign has been ongoing throughout the summer to spread awareness of this form of child sexual exploitation among both potential victims and also parents.

Video warns teens of tactics used by internet paedophiles AsianExpress.co.uk

Messages have been displayed on electronic screens in shopping centres and officers have also been speaking to young people in towns and cities. Police and partners, including local authorities, will continue to release web, facebook and twitter posts to promote the issue. Detective Chief Inspector Sue Jenkinson, of West Yorkshire Police, said the new video was just one part of wide ranging activity to tackle CSE. She said: "This new video really spells out how convincing and manipulative predators can be in

luring victims into talking to them online and in concealing their real identities, and I want to thank everyone involved in helping create it. "People can easily set up fake accounts with fake photos to attract victims and the key message we would encourage young people to remember is never to meet up with someone you've only met on line, who pushes for a meeting. "Just ask yourself; 'Who am I really talking to?' and don't put yourself at risk." She added: "We have a number of criminal investigations ongoing into

CSE in West Yorkshire as well as dedicated awareness campaigns taking place in schools and in communities. "Giving both young people and parents the information about the tactics that predators use and the signs of potential grooming is vital in helping us address and tackle the issue within West Yorkshire. "If you have been subject to child sexual exploitation, know somebody who has, or have information about those involved in this crime, please contact the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

October/November 2014 - 1st Edition Mark Burns-Williamson, West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner said: "This new video is the latest step in raising awareness of the dangers faced by young people online and reaffirms my and West Yorkshire Police’s continued commitment in making sure we are doing everything we can to safeguard children and young people from child sexual exploitation. "Protecting our communities from this insidious crime is one of the top priorities in my refreshed Police and Crime Plan and I fully support this continued campaign which gives young people the tools to make informed decisions and identify the tell-tale signs to remain safe and feeling safe. I would recommend all young people and parents take the time to view this short video in helping them to be aware of the dangers." ‘Waste of time’ investigation sees Galloway walk free

Charges dropped CLEARED: Bradford MP George Galloway has been cleared of all charges due to a lack of evidence

Bradford MP George Galloway has had all charges against him dropped due to insufficient evidence, regarding a ‘hate incident’ which occurred earlier this year. After declaring Bradford an ‘Israel-free zone’ at a proPalestine rally in August, a number of complaints were made against the controversial politician from members of the public, senior officials and even Bradford Council leader, David Green. However, despite the incident being recorded as a ‘hate incident’ by West Yorkshire Police, no further actions will be taken. Now, Mr Galloway has described the whole investigation as a waste of money which has done nothing to change his views on current world affairs. In a statement released by the Respect MP following the news, he said: “This has been an extremely expensive waste of police and CPS time

forced on them by ultraZionists who were pursuing a vendetta against me. “My comments were aimed at the state of Israel, which - I repeat what I said at the time - is an illegal, savage and barbarous state, and had nothing whatsoever to do with race or religion.” He added: “I take back not a word and I will continue to forcefully condemn Israel. “It remains the case that there is a worldwide boycott of Israel, its goods, its services, its academics. “I hope the citizens of Bradford will join me in refusing to treat with the advocates of this hateful and oppressive regime and truly make Bradford an Israelfree zone.” Chief Superintendent Paul Money, Leeds District Commander, said West Yorkshire Police had received a number of complaints about the content of the speech made by Mr Galloway yet confirmed no further action

would be taken. “A full investigation has been carried out which included Mr Galloway being voluntarily interviewed under caution,” he said. “A file was submitted to The Crown Prosecution Service for advice on whether any offences had been committed and they have now concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support any charges. “West Yorkshire Police always takes complaints of hate offences seriously and wants victims and witnesses to come forward with confidence knowing that any reported incidents will be thoroughly investigated. “West Yorkshire Police has recorded this matter as a hate incident.” A hate incident is any incident which is perceived by the victim, or any other person, to be motivated by prejudice or hate towards a person’s disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity.

London family in terror after world’s deadliest spider jumps out of supermarket bananas

A London family were left traumatised after the world's deadliest spider crept out from a bunch of bananas delivered by their supermarket. The family had to spend the night away from their home, after a sac containing thousands of the spider's eggs was also discovered. Parents Tim and Lisa were told the Brazilian Wandering spider is the deadliest in the world. Waitrose, from whom the bananas were from, sent a spider expert who tried to capture the arachnid, but the spider had chewed off its trapped leg and vanished. He killed the eggs by putting them in the freezer. When he located the spider it stood on its back legs and showed its fangs in a gesture of aggression. Trippett bravely guided the spider into a plastic box using a three-foot stick. It has now been removed from the UK. Waitrose have apologised to the family and offered them compensation. In recent months live Brazilian Wandering spiders (also called "banana spiders") and their eggs have been discovered in bananas

in peoples' homes and supermarkets in Essex, Staffordshire, Kent and London. It is thought the trend for organic food may be responsible as organic bananas are not treated with chemicals. Native to rainforests of South America, the spider's genus' name is Phoneutria, which translates as "murderess". The spiders have a leg-span of 5in and don't weave webs, preferring to lurk in dark places. Their bite contains venom which is 30 times more poisonous than that of rattlesnakes', and at least twice as poisonous as the infamous Black Widow's. They are thought to have killed 14 people worldwide since 1926. The last supply of antidote at Guy's Hospital is thought to have expired in 2011. As well as intense pain, paralysis and asphyxiation, the Brazilian Wandering spider's venom can cause unwanted erections of up to four hours in men. This has led some scientists to study the toxin to develop possible treatments for erectile dysfunction.

Domestic slave receives compensation Trafficking victim receives payout in landmark case

GUILTY: Ilyas Ashar and his wife Tallat Ashar were found guilty of trafficking the girl who lived in their house as a slave for more than a decade

A deaf and mute girl from Pakistan, who was smuggled into the UK at the age of ten, has been awarded £100,000 in compensation after being forced to work as a slave for more than a decade. The victim, who is now in her twenties, was trafficked to Britain when she was just ten-years-old and was discovered living in the cellar of a fivebedroom house in Eccles, Greater Manchester, last year. At the home, she was repeatedly raped by Ilyas Ashar, 85, who is currently serving a 15-year prison sentence along with his wife Tallat, 69, who was sentenced to six years. Mr Ashar was found guilty of 13 counts of rape against the girl as well as two counts of people trafficking and three offences of benefit fraud. Mrs Ashar was convicted for two counts of trafficking and seven offences of benefit fraud. Earlier this month, the girl was awarded a landmark payout of £101,300.72 after Greater Manchester Police took out the Proceeds of Crime case. The Ashars must also pay back benefits to the state that they wrongfully claimed for the girl, totalling around £14,000, as well as court costs of £300,000. Salford's police chief said the case was important for victims of trafficking everywhere. Chief Supt Mary Doyle, said: “The crimes of the Ashars are well documented and people continue to share a sense of disbelief at the prolonged cruelty they inflicted on their young victim. “However, inspired by her strength and courage in the face of overwhelming obstacles, officers have worked tirelessly to ensure justice is done. “Our financial investigators delved deeply into the Ashars financial affairs and used existing legislation to great effect. “The money will in no way make up for what she went through over a number of years, but it will help her move on with her life.” The victim was found in June 2009 after Salford Trading Standards contacted the authorities to help with an investigation into money laundering. Upon arriving at the Ashar’s home, the young girl was found sleeping on a cot bed in the cellar of the residence and was removed to a place of safety by police.

Be Clear on Cancer NEWS

GIANT LEAP: Scientist believe that new study shows that people with Type 1 diabetes may no longer need to inject themselves with insulin

Pensioner warns others to know the signs of cancer

A new Be Clear on Cancer campaign is aiming to get more people to contact their doctor early if blood is present in their urine as it is a common symptom of kidney and bladder cancer. Latest figures reveal that only one in three people survive the condition beyond a year if diagnosed at a late stage, compared with more than nine in ten who survive at least a year if diagnosed at the earliest stage. Mr Goyas Miah was 70-yearsold when he was diagnosed with bladder cancer and went to his GP the very same day, who then refered him to St Bart’s NHS Hospital for further tests. The tests revealed he had inflamed cancer cells and he was told that an operation would need to be done straightaway. Mr Miah was positive in his outlook: “I didn’t feel any pain so I wasn’t too concerned especially as I was told that they could treat me easily,” he said. “However, just the word Cancer caused me to worry sometimes but the love and support from my family helped me a lot.” Mr Miah told some of his friends as he felt that his experience could help others but didn’t tell other people in his community as cancer is often seen as taboo. “It’s difficult to talk about cancer with older Asian people but I try and help people where I can,” he added, “also many people ignore their health.” Three weeks after his diagnosis, he had an operation to remove his bladder followed by regular check-ups. A year later some inflammation was found again but they removed it quickly. When he received the news that he was clear of cancer Mr Miah says he was overjoyed. He said “I felt great, I was very satisfied after seeing Dr Pati, my Urologist when she told me the cancer was gone. “It made me so happy…I value my life, I want to enjoy it with my grandchildren and I am happy to share more time with them.’ Mr Miah is keen to stress the importance of not delaying to go and see your GP. The earlier bladder and kidney

cancers are diagnosed, the higher the chance of survival, so being aware of the symptoms is crucial. Visible blood in urine is a key symptom in many bladder and kidney cancers and those who notice it, even if it’s just the once, should see their doctor without delay. Yet research has found that 43 per cent of people would wait until they saw blood in their urine at least a second time before they contacted their GP. It is believed that within South Asian communities there are cultural, language and religious reasons that can prevent people from seeing their doctor early. There is often a strong fear of cancer, a perception that cancer is an incurable disease that quickly leads to death. Some believe that by talking about it is tempting fate. But finding it earlier makes it more treatable. Dr Anant Sachdev, a GP who features in the Be Clear on Cancer advertising, comments: “It’s important for people from all communities to be aware of the symptoms of bladder and kidney cancer, especially where cultural, language and religious barriers exist. “The message is simple, if you notice blood in your urine, even if it’s just the once, tell your doctor.”

Diabetes breakthrough could end insulin jabs Scientists believe they have made a ‘giant leap forward’ in their search for an effective treatment for Type 1 diabetes. They hope it could eventually mean people with diabetes no longer need to inject themselves with insulin. Diabetes is an autoimmune condition that causes the pancreas to stop producing insulin - the hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. If the amount of glucose in the blood is too high, over time it can seriously damage the body's organs. In this study, experts using human embryonic stem cells as a starting point have, for the first time, produced human insulin-producing beta cells. These cells are the equivalent in almost every way to normally functioning beta cells and have been produced in the kind of massive quantities needed for cell transplantation and pharm-aceutical purposes.

The stem cell-derived beta cells are currently undergoing trials in animal models, including nonhuman primates. Doug Melton, the Xander University Professor at Harvard University, who led the work, said he hopes clinical trials could be carried out on humans within a few years. Professor Melton, who is also codirector of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, also added that the device being tested has so far protected beta cells implanted in mice from immune attack for many months. "There have been previous reports of other labs deriving beta cell types from stem cells, no other group has produced mature beta cells as suitable for use in patients," he said. "The biggest hurdle has been to get to glucose-sensing, insulinsecreting beta cells, and that's what our group has done. "We are now just one pre-clinical step away from the finish line."

Terror charges in Capital

Cell transplantation as a treatment for diabetes is still essentially experimental and has been available to only a very small number of patients. It uses cells from dead bodies and requires the use of powerful drugs to suppress a person's immune system. Professor Elaine Fuchs, of Rockefeller University, described the findings as ‘one of the most important advances to date in the stem-cell field’. "For decades, researchers have tried to generate human pancreatic beta cells that could be cultured and passaged long term under conditions where they produce insulin. "(Professor) Melton and his colleagues have now overcome this hurdle and opened the door for drug discovery and transplantation therapy in diabetes," she said. Around 10 per cent of all diabetes is Type 1 but it is the most common type of childhood diabetes.

British authorities on Friday 17th October charged five young London men with terror offenses including obtaining a gun, conducting surveillance on a police station and taking an oath of allegiance to IS. The Metropolitan Police force said the men, arrested in London over the past two weeks, were charged with preparing acts of terrorism between 8th July and 7th October. The men were accused of

offenses including taking an oath of allegiance to the banned Islamic State group, procuring a Baikal handgun and ammunition and using Google Street View to conduct reconnaissance on a police station and an army barracks in west London. The men are named as Tarik Hassane, 21; Suhaib Majeed, 20; Nyall Hamlett, 24; and Momen Motasim, 21 and all appeared appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Sikh leader passes away NEWS

President Daljit Singh Shergill, known as Shergill Sahib to hundreds of thousands of adherents worldwide, left his physical body at 8pm GMT on 6th October 2014. His passing took place at Queen Elizabeth Hospital surrounded by family and friends. The cause of death was complications due to heart failure. He was 70 years-old. An outstanding pioneer in many fields with a deep and compassionate insight into the human condition, he established permanent institutions, created spectacular events, and produced a prolific Sikh profile doing Community Work. The first President to serve consistently a term of 20 years at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick, he forged links with the wider community on interfaith issues, sat on race consultative committees and set up the first Sikh welfare provision within the Gurdwara. When he arrived in the West Midlands in 1961, to meet his younger brother and father who had fought in World War II, he only had five pounds in his pocket on his arrival. He was an active custodian and was part of a union fighting injustices in the workplace. He was a formidable sportsman and played tug of war professionally as a team captain. A deeply devoted Sikh, Shergill Sahib has been an inspiration and icon, who motivated thousands to embrace the Sikh way of life. Through his personal efforts, the Sikh community in Smethwick started to see great changes taking place. Shergill Sahib became President in 1984. He raised £1.4 million before starting work on the Gurdwara Sahib in the nineties, which was completed in 2002. This remarkable holy building changed the skyline of Smethwick. He put Smethwick Gurdwara on the international stage. Traveling extensively in the eighties, Shergill Sahib crusaded tirelessly to educate, uplift and enlighten everyone he met. His basic message was "Freedom is your birth-right, take Amrit and be free from kaljug." He went to Romania with five Singh's to distribute aid. He financially supported Khalsa Aid and United Sikhs after the Tsunami, when they required local support. Shergill Sahib became Sandwell Sports Personality of the Year for all his hard work in starting the first Sikh Games under the banner of Shaheedi Tournaments, which still take place in the UK.

Joining the Labour Party as a member, he had very close ties with Lord Kang, Councillor Hussain, Adrian Bailey, Tom Watson, John Spellar and Darren Copper. Working closely to start a Sikh school in Smethwick was one of his wishes. He was a champion of women's rights, and believed that it is women who are the backbone of society since 1992 when he inaugurated Samaj Sadhar, which helps Sikh families and women suffering domestic violence with mediation in marriage breakdown. He kept community relations at the forefront he arranged a meeting with police and community regarding the Besti play to bring down tension and to find a solution at the time. Over the years he worked very closely with many organisations, especially Sikh Federation. Bhai Amrik Singh was like a brother to him, and always supported all issues facing Sikhs in the UK and abroad. He established the vision of SYCC 2002 the first of its kind in UK it was providing services to the community, youth empowerment programmes, education classes, gym, IT lab and much more this project cost 1m which was lottery funded. Standing six feet four, his powerful and dynamic presence dominated any gathering. Fearless, outspoken yet humble, he could be both charming and daunting as the occasion required. His openhearted acceptance of everyone along with an uncompromising insistence upon excellence made him a formidable sikh leader. The Tribune link below states that in 2003, Shergill Sahib had wanted to form a Sikh Council, which today has become a reality and represent British Sikhs in Parliament. In accordance with Sikh tradition, and his wishes, cremation will take place on Wednesday, 15th October at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick at 1:45pm till 2:45pm then 3.15pm at Sandwell Crematorium then back to GNGSmethwick. UK student visa policy ‘baffling’ The UK's policy on student visas is baffling, the vice-chancellor of Oxford University has told an audience of academics. Prof Andrew Hamilton said when he travelled abroad "one question persists - why has the UK adopted a visa system so hostile to student entry? "I do my best to answer but, frankly, the question baffles me as well." The Home Office argues its overhaul of the student-visa system two years ago had been necessary to tackle abuse. But Prof Hamilton said the policy of limiting international student numbers was now harming the UK. “For the first time in decades, the number of international students at our universities has dropped, most markedly from India,” he said. The government's policy of tightening up the student visa system has been criticised as damaging to the ability of UK universities to recruit economically valuable international students. Prof Hamilton used his annual oration to the university to urge political parties to end student migrant targets and to use research-based evidence in forming election policies, particularly on immigration. He cited recent research by Oxford's Migration Observatory, which, he argued, showed the public did not link overseas student numbers with immigration issues. “Study is the least frequent answer given when the public are asked what they consider the motives for migration to be,” Prof Hamilton said. “Student migration simply isn't an issue for them and there are few votes in restricting overseas student numbers. “There are signs that this reality is beginning to dawn across the political spectrum - something to be welcomed and encouraged ahead of the election.” He added that university research could help shed light on ‘complex political and policy challenges’ and ‘defy the temptation to reach for simple or simplistic answers’. “In essence, we can provide the data, the understanding and the analysis to underpin arguments and the possible solutions for the problems we all face,” he said. Prof Hamilton called for more recognition of the huge public benefit that higher education brought to the UK - ‘sadly benefit which far outstrips the level of public investment in our sector’. He noted that UK public investment in higher education stood at 0.9% of gross domestic product (GDP), "one of the lowest in Europe", and urged politicians to come up with "properly developed policies on higher education", which would benefit not only students and universities, but would also be "hugely beneficial to the public good".

SCRUTINSING: Vice-chancellor of Oxford University Prof Andrew Hamilton questions the UK’s student visa policy

An Egyptian-born scientist has been showing that when it comes to chemistry, he is top of the class, after acing his PhD with no errors. Ahmed Elmekawy, who practices at the University of Huddersfield, has been making great strides in research that will ultimately help the chemical industry become more environmentally friendly and economically efficient. After three years of ruthless studying for his PhD, the now Dr Elmekawy received his thesis back from examiners last week without requiring any corrections. The rare distinction puts the researcher above the rest of his class and his achievement was recognised by the university who issued him with a Vice-Chancellor’s Award for an Outstanding Research Degree Thesis. Now Dr Elmekawy says he plans to continue with his research, which aims to develop new types of solid catalyst for chemical processes. “The project is aimed directly at reducing the environmental impact of the chemical syntheses that are currently used in industry,” explains Dr Elmekawy. “Over decades, thousands of liquid phase chemical processes have been developed using liquid acid and liquid base catalysts. “These catalysts are very active, but they result in a large amount of effluent as they are removed from the processes. Replacing them with solid catalysts would immediately reduce the amount of effluent generated.” After obtaining a BSc degree in Physical and Chemical Sciences at Tanta University in his native Egypt, Dr Elmekawy worked as head of the chemical department for a Saudi-based company before deciding to continue his studies and relocate to the UK which, according to the well-travelled scientist, ‘has the best education in the world’. He selected the University of Huddersfield, after being impressed by various factors, including its high employability rate among former students. Studying for an MSc in analytical chemistry, Dr Elmekawy scored the first of his distinctions, before moving on to PhD research, for which he was awarded a scholarship. He has published three papers and given a sequence of conference presentations on his work and has been preparing a new article, coauthored with University of Huddersfield professors Rob Brown and Joe Sweeney, for the journal ‘Catalysis Science and Technology’. Dr Elmekawy now continues with postdoctoral work at the University, and his career goals include collaboration with industry in tandem with academic research.

October/November 2014 - 1st Edition Hospital staff were called “incompetent, underperforming, useless and dopey”, pushed and prodded, and had pens thrown at them, an investigation into bullying has revealed. Shouting at colleagues in front of patients at the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust was the “norm”, and the belief was that the bullying came from the top, the report by conciliation service Acas found. Acas, which conducted interviews with 97 staff members, was called in after a critical report by CQC inspectors, highlighting the bullying claims and staff shortages at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, earlier this year. During interviews many were in tears and some said they had been emotionally damaged by the experience “and were no longer the same people as they were before”. Many had had to take “significant” time off sick, leave or take lower grade jobs “to escape”, with many saying they had been in tears at work and home and “dreaded” coming into work.

NHS bosses threw pens at ‘incompetent, underperforming, useless’ hospital staff

Those who complained were often victimised and interviewees complained of managers hand-picking friends to conduct investigations to get the result they wanted, or being told by senior managers to raise their concerns with the very managers who were doing the bullying. Examples of bullying included consultants being threatened with the sack if they didn’t work on Saturdays and those who were not in an “in group” in the cliquey environment of the hospitals being given the worst shifts, moved around a lot deliberately and being excluded from meetings and social events. The report said: “Many staff talked

of feeling intimidated into not pursuing complaints and there was a strong belief this message came from the very top, with senior staff being seen as supportive of bullies and the bullying culture.” It concluded: “There was an overwhelming feeling that only major changes at the top would lead to a real cultural shift.” Some staff were too frightened to attend the interviews - even on the telephone “for fear they would be identified.” Staff are being briefed today about the report and an action plan which includes mandatory training for all about acceptable behaviour and the

creation of a support service and hotline number for staff to report concerns anonymously. The hospital trust has said disciplinary action is an option and will not shy away from probing cases where investigations find a clear case to answer. But health union Unison has said bullies who are still in the organisation need to go before real progress can be made. Chief executive Christopher Long, who took over last week, said: “I have a very clear message to our workforce: bullying, intimidation, harassment and other such behaviours will simply not be

25

tolerated. Acas report makes “The uncomfortable reading at times, but I am very much focused on making the issues it raises a thing of the past. Together with our staff side representatives, we will be working to ensure our staff feel safe at work and that everyone understands the behaviours we expect of them. Furthermore, if anyone who works for us experiences any negative behaviours going forward, we want them to know exactly how to report them and have confidence that action will be taken to address their issues.” But he stressed that the “vast majority” of staff didn’t experience bullying. Paul Credland, Staff Side Chair of the Joint Negotiating and Consultation Committee, which represents a number of unions working alongside the Trust, said bullying has increased because of a “target driven culture and poor management skills.” He said he welcomed Mr Long’s response, adding: “I look forward to working in partnership in the AntiBullying Group to address the issues raised by the ACAS report.”

Dr Abbas Khan inquest Inquest hears how mother travelled to Syria, kissed the feet of officials begging them to release her son An inquest into the death of a British orthopaedic surgeon, heard that sources inside Syria said that his death was not a suicide. Father-of-two, 32-year-old Abbas Khan, from Streatham, south London died while in detention in Damascus last December after being held for almost a year. The 32-year-old orthopaedic surgeon had been captured on 22nd November 2012, while out for a walk while working in a hospital in Aleppo to help civil war victims. He had travelled from Turkey to help victims of hospital bombings. He died in his cell in a high security prison on 16th December last year and the Syrian government claimed he committed suicide – just days before he was due to be released – but the family have always claimed he was murdered. The inquest heard how "Superhuman" efforts were made by the family of to secure his release before his death in a Syrian prison. The UK Foreign Office said he was "in effect murdered" but the Syrian authorities claim he took his own life. At the start of the inquest, the chief coroner, Judge Peter Thornton, told jurors that the medic’s mother, Fatima, in particular had been “extraordinarily persistent”. Giving evidence in court, the orthopaedic surgeon's mother, Fatima Khan, said she went to Syria in July 2013 and visited a number of embassies and prisons to trace her son. She would kiss the shoes of the officials she met and beg them to help her. She said some of the cars she travelled in came under sniper fire, adding: "I felt scared, but my son was here so I had to be brave". She finally saw him at the Court of Terrorism at the end of July. "I hugged him. He was a skeleton. He was in tears. I said, 'Look, mummy is here for you'. He said, 'Sorry, I shouldn't have come here, please take me home'," she said. Her son was missing a fingernail and his feet were completely burnt, Ms Khan said. When questioned over his injuries he replied: "This is nothing, I have suffered more than this'." Dr Khan later described how the conditions were "like hell" with cockroaches, mice and faeces on the floor, his mother said. He added he was beaten up by other inmates and interrogated by men who beat him with rubber hoses, the jury heard. Chief coroner Judge Peter Thornton said the father of two was found "allegedly hanged" while in custody in Damascus.

PERSISTENT: Jurors heard that the medic’s mother, Fatima Khan, in particular had been “extraordinarily persistent” in trying to get her son released from the high security prison in Syria

Mr Khan's family has always maintained he was murdered, despite the Syrian authorities' assertions he killed himself. The coroner said the main issues for the jury to consider after hearing all the evidence were likely to be: did Dr Khan take his own life, or was he "forced in some way by his captors to take his own life against his will", or was he "unlawfully killed" by his captors? The inquest at the Royal Courts of Justice is set to last three weeks.

Ranbir Kapoor says ‘yes’ to Sanjay Dutt biopic It's official - Ranbir Kapoor has given his nod to Rajkumar Hirani for the muchanticipated Sanjay Dutt biopic. He will play the currently incarcerated actor on screen. Though Ranbir had shown interest in the subject, he was mulling over the decision. Hirani too was undecided about the project.

Not so long ago, Ranbir had told a section of the media: "Portraying Sanju sir on screen is a big task. And it comes with a huge responsibility. He's had a very entertaining, engaging, and a rollercoaster kind of a life. I think Raju sir himself hasn't decided if he wants to do it or not." In an interview to

Mirror, Sanjay's sister, Priya Dutt, had backed the casting of Ranbir. Last week, the actor told Hirani that he could start working on the script and screenplay keeping him in mind. A source close to the development said: “Hirani is very happy. He now has an interesting story to tell and a talented actor to

say it with. Ranbir, like Sanju, is the darling of the masses.” Added the source, “But it's not going to be an easy story to depict as Sanjay has had many ups and downs in his life.” Word is that, Hirani will realease the biopic only when Dutt, who is serving a jail term in the 1993 Mumbai blast case, is a free bird.

Aamir Khan started the trend two decades back, but recently, more Bollywood stars have questioned the credibility of the numerous film awards that exist. Here's a look at some Bollywood biggies, who've openly criticised award functions and slammed them as being pre-fixed and purely money-making schemes under the pretext of an accolades ceremony.

What some Bollywood celebrities think about award ceremonies Known for his stellar acts in films such as Kahaani, Gangs of Wasseypur, Talaash (2012) and Lunchbox (2013), Nawazuddin Siddiqui is both the audience as well as the critics' favourite. Though the actor is happy that his talent has finally been recognised and he's been showered with domestic as well as international honours, he believes that often deserving people are not awarded in

Bollywood. "I feel a number of actors do a great job, but they aren't awarded appropriately for their work ... There are so many of them (award functions) that the sense of gratification which you should feel on getting an award, is hardly there," the actor told us in a recent interview.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui At a time when she is expected to win many awards for her performance in Queen, earlier this year, this 27-year-old declared that she will no longer attend film award shows because she finds them "overhyped". "I won some (awards) when I made my debut, and even won a National Award a few years ago. Despite that, I was almost jobless for two years. I think we give it too much respect, and have frankly overhyped it ... it doesn't add up to anything," Kangana was quoted saying. She further revaled that she rejected four awards for Queen and Krrish 3 (2013), and will not attend any awards ceremonies in the future.

October/November 2014 - 1st Edition Dia Mirza is no flower child but she chose flowers as the theme for her wedding to filmmaker Sahil Sangha. The Bollywood couple tied the knot at a farmhouse in Ghitorni in New Delhi on 18th October, in the presence of family and a few close friends. For their sangeet, a day earlier, the place was done up with sweetsmelling rajnigandha. The next day, when the nuptials took place, the same farmhouse was bedecked in lilies and orchids as peach-andwhite furnishings, chandeliers, crystals and candles added to the regalia. Dia, who has been in a relationship with Sahil for over four years, was

every inch the resplendent bride, beaming away in a beige-and-green designer sharara. The groom, equally ecstatic, looked dapper in a white sherwani. Sahil arrived in a horse-drawn carriage and his baaraatis spent a good one hour dancing to bandbaaja at the farm entrance. The couple solemnised their wedding by Arya Samaj rites. We hear, while the wedding vows were being read out and the priest said, "Jald putra ho", Dia interrupted him and said, "Putri ho." Being foodies themselves, the two made sure that the wedding spread was the

Rumoured ex-flames Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh are paired opposite each other in ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’. However, more interestingly is the fact that this is her first item number in the film directed by Zoya Akhtar. Sources said the song

is called ‘Swing’ and even though some other members of the ensemble cast that includes Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar, Anil Kapoor and Shefali Shah are also seen in the same song, it seems though that for the moment all spotlights are on Anushka. Producer Ritesh Sidhwani remained unavailable for comment.

Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan could be Paris Hilton's new love interest... in a movie, that is. Roshan enjoyed a night out with the American socialite in Dubai recently when he flew down for the VIP launch of Cle Dubai, a new restaurant by celebrity chef Greg Malouf. After spending time with the Bang Bang star and tweeting about it, Hilton was quizzed by friend Sheeraz Hasan (founder of Hollywood.TV) about doing a film with Hrithik and playing his love interest, reports Times of India. Speaking about her meeting with the actor, Hilton said "Hrithik's a gentleman, very sweet and charming, and we hung out all night.

“I have heard so much about Bollywood and Hrithik represented India in the most elegant and romantic way! I can't wait to go back to India. I love the culture, the people and the fashion... India rocks." Hilton has been approached by several Bollywood producers in the past to star in a Bollywood movie as well as record her next single with an Indian artiste. A film co-starring Roshan might just be the perfect launch vehicle for Hilton, in Bollywood. Can fans expect an announcement soon? Meanwhile, Roshan's latest release ‘Bang Bang’, an official remake of the Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz starrer ‘Knight & Day’, has turned out to be a big hit at the box office.

Indian film legend welcomed to Leeds As the hit theatre production, ‘Happy Birthday Sunita’, arrived in West Yorkshire last week, acting royalty, Shabana Azmi, took time out of her busy schedule to catch up with the Asian Express.

Q) Tell me about the play A) Happy Birthday Sunita is a play about a family that comes together to celebrate the 40th birthday of the daughter of the house who is still unmarried and living with the mother, Tejpal – who is the character that I am playing. You discover that actually it is a dysfunctional family and all the members are wearing masks in a sense and pretending to be something which they are not. Then Tejpal, who is the matriarch of the family because her husband has gone to India, announces that she has had enough of role playing and she’s done with duty and responsibility and will now follow her heart. This comes as a huge shock to the family because they have only ever

The makers of The Shaukeens knew that getting Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Piyush Mishra with the dusky Lisa Haydon and having Akshay Kumar in a special appearance in their naughty comedy would evoke laughter from the audience. They apparently hosted a screening for youngsters between the ages of 18-22, handpicked from select colleges of Mumbai. Their idea was to get the youth's perspective and the reactions stumped everyone. The college kids found it to be one of the funniest films they had seen in a while, with girls finding the naughtiness shown in the movie 'cute, quirky and hilarious.' The focus group also enjoyed the soundtrack, with Honey Singh's Alcoholic and Manali Trance being their clear favourites. Director Abhishek Sharma, who was present at the screening, says, "Everyone has a naughty side, but we all know our limits. The film portrays just that." Crediting his actors for their performances, he adds, "Anupam, Annu and Piyush are three of the finest actors we have. They've unleashed their naughty side in this film. Lisa has a natural flair for comedy and Akshay is doing something he's never done before."

DELIGHTED: Receiving the award Mohammed Mauheed and Mohammed Waqas PR and Marketing Directors for Tipu Sultan Restaurant

Success for 32nd annual dinner which has raised a staggering £1.7 million over the years

Best Restaurant design awarded B to grand Birmingham eatery

irmingham-based Tipu Sultan Restaurant in Moseley won the Best Restaurant Design Award on Monday the 13th October 2014 at a gala evening dinner and awards night event held at the AJ Bell Stadium in Manchester. Known previously as the "Jug of Ale Pub", the site went through a major building and refurbishment program during 2012 and 2013 and finally opened its doors to the public in September last year. The designers of Tipu Sultan wanted to create a majestic feel to the restaurant and ambience with food to match the regal feel. The grand staircase of the restaurant, the tin ceiling and the 20-foot chandelier are one of the many unique features in

the Restaurant. Large dining tables to cater for families and private booths for couples are a key feature. The open plan kitchen has been put in place so visitors can see their food being cooked in front of them. The first floor boasts a banqueting facility to cater for small wedding functions. The design has been carefully thought out and dosen’t disappoint. The furniture which has been carefully handcrafted from India and Pakistan, with large bespoke chez lounges and art craft add to the splendour. Tipu Sultan was pitched up against nine other restaurants, but came out as the outright winner for its unique design and look. Mohammed Mauheed PR director for Tipu Sultan went to collect the award on stage. He thanked the design team and Marketing Partner Mohammed Waqas whose support throughout the project was outstanding. Restaurant Manager Abdul Haq, Ganesh Kamble and Kamran Riaz also joined the celebrations. He thanked all involved in the project from day one and the family for all their support.

Some of the biggest global brands gathered at Aagrah’s 32nd Annual Business Dinner 2014 at a magnificent setting of New Dock Hall, Royal Armouries in Leeds, which looked fit for an Oscars ceremony. The event which is held annually in memory of the late Sajid Sabir, son of Aagrah Chairman Mohamed Sabir MBE, Hons, DBS, has raised £1.7 million over the years for numerous charities in the UK and some overseas. The dinner is designed for business engagement, to invest and to help support regional economy growth. The business centric event’s theme for this year was very much supporting and investing in regional economic growth, this was echoed in some of the speeches delivered by keynote speakers and highlighted the help that is available to businesses from government funded agencies. The dinner also had a Royal seal of approval from HRH Prince Charles, as this year’s Principle charities were Mosaic and The Prince’s Trust, founded by Prince Charles. Aagrah’s Managing Director Mohammed Aslam MBE received a letter from HRH thanking Aagrah for supporting his charities. Commenting on the letter Mr Aslam said the letter was humbling and we’re truly honoured to receive it. This year’s dinner helped raise a staggering £120,000.

Retrospective Reliance A negligent misstatement exists when one party owes a duty of care to another party and carelessly makes a false statement on which the other party relies and as a result suffers a loss. The fundamental aspect for a Claimant to succeed in bringing a claim for negligent misstatement is that there must be reliance on a statement which has caused a loss. The Court of Appeal, in overturning the initial decision in the Technology and Construction Court confirmed in the case of Hunt and others -v- Optima (Cambridge) Ltd, Strutt & Parker and others that reliance on a negligent misstatement cannot be retrospective. In this case, Optima (the developer landlord) had built a block of flats in Peterborough and had engaged with property consultants, Strutt & Parker (“S&P”), to conduct a survey on the flats and produce certificates attesting the satisfactory construction of the flats. Before buying the flats the purchasers were told that the certificates to be supplied by S&P were similar to a guarantee provided by the National House Building Council when there is a new development of houses for example. A draft copy was provided to the purchasers who were told that they would receive the issued certificates on completion. Soon after the purchasers had moved into their new flats, to their horror, they became noticeably defective. Problems included leaking roofs, defective plumbing and drainage issues. A total of 19 defects were identified in one individual flat. A number of purchasers brought a claim against S&P for negligently carrying out the surveys on the flats and recording incorrect information in the certificate. The key issue for the Court to decide was whether the purchaser,

when purchasing the lease, relied on the certificate which was not issued until after the contracts had exchanged. Initially the Court held in favour of the purchasers, finding that it was immaterial that the certificates were received after the exchange of contracts. S&P were found to be in breach of their duty of care as the certificates were held to be enforceable warranties. An appeal from this decision was allowed by the Court of Appeal who considered the following; (1) Were the certificates enforceable warranties? No words such as ‘warranty’ or ‘promise’ were used in the wording of the certificate. The certificates were negotiated by professionals who knew the industry well and should have known the difference between a warranty and a mere representation. The Court of Appeal held that the certificate could not be construed as a warranty. (2) Was there a negligent misstatement? The certificate was only a draft copy when relied upon by the purchasers. The Court of Appeal held that a document which was unsigned and unissued was capable of being amended at any time and could in fact not be issued at all. A document bearing such flexibility could not incur liability for negligent misstatement. The case highlights that purchasers of a lease need to be diligent when considering all documentation before signing any contract. All documents relied on should be their final form with clear wording of their intentions. We at Blacks deal with all aspects of property law acting for both landlords and tenants in all matters arising in respect of leases as well as dealing with claims for negligent misstatement.

With a rigid body structure, nearly 50/50 weight distribution, and a remarkably low centre of gravity, Model S offers the responsiveness and agility expected from the world’s best sports cars whilst still providing the ride quality of a saloon. Every millimetre of Model S is designed to reduce drag. The door handles are no exception. When not in use, the handles retract into the body, streamlining airflow. When a driver approaches the vehicle with the key, the handles slide out and unlatch with a simple touch. Model S is not simply a car designed with the environment in mind, it is also a driver’s car. Behind the wheel, the combination of meticulous noise engineering,

Asian Express Managing Director, Nadim Hanif, got his hands on one of the world’s first Tesla Model S motors last week and gave his review on an ‘incredible vehicle’. To have now had this first-hand experience of the Tesla S, and as a selfconfessed car enthusiast myself, I can honestly say that this is possibly the best car I have ever driven. This particular model is the top of the range, and is priced at £100,000, which may sound expensive, but you basically start saving money from day one. Why do I rate it so highly? It’s quiet, smooth and absolutely seamless, with no gear changing needed. Simply get in and go – it’s like switching your TV on and off. The car drives like no other I have ever been in before, going from 0 -

60mph in just four seconds. Yes, it’s smooth, and its handling is like that of a thorough-bred supercar - the cornering is like a four-wheeldrive whilst the grip is absolutely amazing. I must also confess that the 50/50 weight distribution is almost identical to that of my own personal 2013 BMW M5 and that, for me, is about the best car in the world. I got used to the fact that there was no sound of the engine yet I’m sure the Speedo was telling fibs at times, as all too often 40mph felt like 20mph. As for the looks, they were very much deceiving with some people comparing it to a Maserati and others being left dumbfounded by this

alongside Tesla’s uniquely quiet powertrain, creates the sound dynamics of a recording studio. The touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, and steering wheel controls seamlessly integrate media, navigation, communications, cabin controls and vehicle data. From the moment the door opens, the high-resolution Model S 17” touchscreen powers on and returns to its last function. Model S drivers can listen to any song they want with a choice of HD radio, online radio, on-demand internet radio and Bluetooth or USB audio devices. Planning ahead is made easy with Google Maps which offers live traffic information and allows you to visualise the cars energy consumption

instantaneously. When reversing, drivers can see behind the car with the industry’s first full HD backup camera which is optimised for ultimate visibility and safety. The Model S has an unbeaten EV range of up to 312 miles, meaning long distances in an electric vehicles are no longer out of the question. Most customers will charge mainly at home, waking up to a completely recharged battery, giving owners the option to travel for free between cities along well-traveled routes in Europe. Superchargers provide half a charge in as little as 20 minutes and are strategically placed to allow owners to drive from station to station with minimal stops. Travelling with the family or

plenty of luggage is no problem in the Model S. The car comfortably seats five adults and the rear facing seat option provides additional seating for two children. The unique architecture of Model S even creates unprecedented storage space with up to 63 cubic feet of possible storage to be utilized. Whether you are a mountain-biker a surfer or just a big shopper, all your items and more can be safely stored in the vehicle. With sustainable transportation at the heart of everything Tesla produces, the Model S looks set to become the benchmark for other car manufacturers to follow when producing exciting electric motors.

incredible car in front of them. The car rode OS Michelin 255 x R21 tyres and the 21-inch turbine wheels were really eye-catching. Either way it looked slick and stood out from the crowd. It looks better

than the majority of four-door cars that you see on the road, and it could even pass as a coupe model - that's how nice it is. Look inside the Tesla and a massive interactive console is on hand with easy access, leaving all passengers, and admittedly myself, to just sit back and say ‘wow’. It’s basically an iPad fitted in to the cockpit, in fact it’s bigger than an iPad and it’s faster too. The screen had Google maps, full internet access and can be used as a big screen reversing camera. Everything was controlled via this touch screen whether you needed to lock or unlock the doors, or even lower the suspension; you had all the controls right in front of you. The car is also very spacious, similar

to the feel of a Big Range Rover Vogue, with plenty of head room and even more leg room which even the back seat passengers can take advantage of. Over all this 100K motor would save money every day: 1. Free Road Tax. 2. Free Congestion charges 3. £8 or fill up on an overnight charge at home giving you 250 miles 4. Services cost next to nothing The only downside is that you would have to work out the mileage of your trip in advance to see if would get to your destination and back. If not, I suppose you could always call at any service station and charge up whilst having a cup of coffee. Basically, the Tesla S is an incredible motor. Nadim Hanif Asian Express Motors

LOADED: The military graded Dartz Prombon comes loaded with luxuries such as a golden shisha, Xbox One and PS4

A thumbs up for the new Prius+ Prius+, Europe’s market-leading seven-seat hybrid MPV, is being regroomed for 2015 with new styling details, equipment features and colour choices. The revised frontend features a new upper grille and a more prominent Toyota badge that extends the forward line of the bonnet. There are new LED headlights, too, which use a cylindrical projector for both high and low beam. Their slim profile and contrasting black and chrome plating give Prius+ a distinctive sharp-eyed appearance. The lower grille adopts the trapezoid shape that’s a common feature of the latest Toyota models. With a gloss black metallic finish, it adds emphasis to the car’s broad stance. The impression of width is reinforced by a reworking of the bumper corners, given extra emphasis in a flowing form that extends from the headlights to the new air intakes and LED daytime running lights. At the rear there’s a new combination lamp design with “light guide” treatment and red inner lenses that give the car an individual lighting signature. Following the styling

themes adopted at the front, there is a new licence plate trim and bumper with an integrated diffuser. Changes in the cabin include a dark silver metallic finish for the driver’s switchgear and the air conditioning dial control and a chrome finish for the door handles. There are two new chrometrimmed, slim-line air vents in the centre console and a new 4.2inch colour TFT information screen, controlled using switchgear on the steering wheel. As well as basic information such as clock, trip indicator, cruising range fuel consumption, the screen also displays the Hybrid System Indicator and Energy monitor – features common to all Toyota hybrids. It also provides a new “Eco Judge” function, designed to help the driver maximise the powertrain’s efficiency, giving a points score for their eco-driving style. The screen will also mirror the settings for the air conditioning and audio settings, keeping them in the driver’s line of sight when on the move. The 2015 Prius+ is fitted as standard with the

When a military grade assault vehicles car boss, namely Leo Yankelovich, said that the Prombon was the "the real spy car of the 21st century", many big boys were heard squeeling in excitement . The Prombron SUV by the eccentric Latvianbased car maker Dartz Motor is becoming a global phenomenon. The “six-zero” price tag means only members of high society have access to the monster vehicle, which have been snapped up previously by Kanye West Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system, including touchscreen control, Bluetooth and reversing camera. This can be upgraded – Toyota Touch 2 with Go – to provide additional satellite navigation, live traffic information and, via Toyota’s online portal, an expanded range of connected services, text-tospeech function and 3D city modelling with landmark graphics. The equipment upgrade extends to the availability of electric seat adjustment, a front centre armrest and Intelligent Park Assist. Safety features have also been improved with the introduction of an emergency brake signal, which triggers all side indicators in the event of sudden braking. Hill-start Assist Control is automatically activated when the car detects an uphill gradient. Toyota has also improved Prius+ ride and handling, making adjustments to the suspension damping force. New sound absorption material has been introduced in the side of the rear compartment to reduce noise intrusion in the cabin. The hybrid powertrain has been upgraded to comply with Euro6 emissions standards. Full details of the UK model range, specifications and prices will be announced nearer the on sale date.

Porsche today announces the second generation of the 911 Carrera GTS, ahead of its arrival in showrooms this November. It will join the acclaimed Boxster GTS, Cayman GTS and Panamera GTS in the range of sports cars from Stuttgart. Each of the four new 911 Carrera GTS models – a Coupé and a Cabriolet, available with either rearwheel or all-wheel drive – build on the established core values of the iconic rear-engined 911 by adding further technical features to generate even higher levels of dynamic performance and driving enjoyment. Under the rear engine lid lies an evocative flat-six power unit, tuned to develop 430 hp, an increase of 30 hp over the Carrera S. This is combined with the Sport Chrono package offering dynamic engine mounts, and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) damper system which lowers the car's ride height by ten millimetres. Improved efficiency has also led to quicker acceleration and higher top speeds, and Combined fuel consumption figures remain unchanged from the favourable level of the S models. For example, when combined with the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch gearbox, the 911 Carrera GTS can return 32.5 mpg and also sprint from zero to 62 mph in 4.0 seconds (Cabriolet: 4.2 seconds). With the standard sevenspeed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, a top speed of 198 mph is possible. The exteriors of the new 911

the car really gets all 007. Such as electrochromatic privacy windows, disappearing doorhandles with an anti-paparazzi shock-device, a body made from Kevlar and titanium to protect against magnetic mines, and a rotating bulletproof grille. The four-tonne vehicle

has bulletproof windows, Bang & Olufsen televisions and sound systems, diamond and ruby encrusted gauges, an exterior coating of reinforcement material and is powered by a Mercedes-Benz AMGsourced V-12 engine. Not enough disgusting excess for your taste? The Prombron was originally released with leather upholstered from the foreskin of whale penises causing mass controversy. Classy.

Dynamic performance and power for the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS

Carrera GTS – like other GTS models – differ significantly from the other Carrera models. All versions feature the 911 Carrera 4 body with wide-flared rear wheel arches and a wider track. Also standard are 20inch diameter alloy wheels with centre-lock mechanism, painted in an exclusive matt black finish. Accentuating the nose styling are special trim elements and smoked bi-Xenon headlights with the addition of the Porsche Dynamic Lighting System (PDLS). The air intake grille on the rear engine lid features bespoke GTS black trim strips and black chrome-plated exhaust tailpipes add to the strong visual identity. Further aural distinction is

delivered via the standard sports exhaust system, which delivers an unmistakable GTS sound. The driver and front passenger sit in an exclusive Alcantara interior with leather-trimmed sport seats. The centre seat panels are finished in Alcantara, as on the other Porsche GTS models. With the addition of these new top models, the 911 Carrera range now consists of 12 sports cars at three power levels, as Coupés and Cabriolets, and in rear-wheel and allwheel drive configuration. The new 911 Carrera GTS models are available to order from Porsche Centres in the UK and Ireland from today, with first cars arriving in showrooms during November.

At the rear of the XL Sport sits one of the finest achievements in engine technology – the V2 adapted from the new Ducati 1199 Superleggera, the world's most powerful two-cylinder motorcycle. Like the XL1, of which only 250 units will be built, the Superleggera is also being manufactured in a limited edition (500 units), in a process that embraces hand fabrication and high-precision industrial manufacturing technologies alike. The XL1 and the Superleggera, two icons of lightweight carbon and magnesium design technology, thus unite to create a unique sports car. With the XL Sport, the group brands Volkswagen and Ducati impressively demonstrate how hightech developments can lead to synergies between brands and be used by both parties as modules for new concepts.

A whopping huge discount of £18,650 for a BMW 7 Series was made by a mystery research field team. How and why – well that’s because it’s about to be replaced by a newer model, but a target price research reveals that it is just one of several doubledigit discounts achievable on BMWs. As a result, the premium car manufacturer sits third among all car makers for the overall average discount available on its cars. Others significant BMW discounts include a £10,719 saving off a BMW 640d SE, which is available for £52,411 against a list

price of £63,130, and a £2056 saving on a BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics, which can be bought for £26,719 despite a list price of £28,775. The biggest average discounts across a car maker's range are available on Volvos (14.7%), Renaults (13.6%) and BMWs (13.2%). Across all sectors and manufacturers, the average dealer discount stood at a 12-month high of 10.3%. Jim Holder of What Car?, who conducted the reasearch said: “For months now, we’ve been told that the increased new car sales volumes mean that discounts will

disappear, but the insight offered by our Target Price team shows that you can still get a healthy amount of money off if you are prepared to haggle. “BMW is, rightly, perceived as a quality brand, so it may surprise new car buyers that they can bag some of the brand’s most luxurious offerings for much less than the list price. The fact is that the 7 Series is due to be replaced soon, so there are incredible discounts available. Using Target Price means that you can be bold when you step into the dealership because you know what you can demand.”

Discounts of cars in the luxury segment are particularly strong at the moment, with an average saving of 17% off the list price across the sector. This is an increase of 75% on the same time last year and is also largely down to BMW 7 Series discounts jumping from 9% to 29.3% on average. City cars, small family cars and coupés, where demand is stronger, have all experienced a dip in discounting but cars in the small SUV sector, which includes the BMW X1, Peugeot 3008 and Suzuki SX4, can be snapped up for an average of 8.4% less than the list price.

Maserati’s beautiful concept

“The Ghibli Ermenegildo Zegna Edition is still ‘conceptual’ but absolutely feasible in terms of content and has the possibility of further colour combinations,” says Maserati CEO Harald Wester. “It is a demonstration of the commitment with which Maserati and Ermenegildo Zegna continue to think of an automotive product outside the classical schemes, in addition to confirming the foresight and bond that unites us.” Gildo Zegna, CEO of the Ermenegildo Zegna group added: “The collaboration with Maserati, which began a year ago with the launch of the Quattroporte Zegna Limited Edition. Now has its own natural evolution with the world debut of the Ghibli Ermenegildo Zegna Edition concept, with an innovative layout compared to the current Ghibli range due to the colour choices and materials. “Maserati and Zegna are two companies that share a historic industrial tradition and it is a source of pride for me that this partnership can celebrate the excellence of Made in Italy.” The Maserati Ghibli S Q4 dressed by Ermenegildo Zegna is painted in a new tri-layer colour and the 20" wheels are also in a specially developed colour. In the interior, the combination of the finest leather and precious Zegna yarns dominate, with the typical inevitable details of the two brands.

THE LATEST SPORTS NEWS WITH THE BIGGEST NAMES

STAYING: Terry Walsh hardly had time to take a training session before opting to make a u-turn on his decision to resign from his role with the India hockey team

He’s staying, he’s going, and now he’s staying again. Terry Walsh has certainly had quieter weeks in his role as India’s chief hockey coach after withdrawing his resignation earlier on Tuesday, just a day after he announced his plans to quit. After meeting with sport officials, the Australian opted to remain in his post, with the decision announced on Twitter by the country’s Sports Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, who tweeted: “I am happy that after SAI's efforts #TerryWalsh is back.

“Looking ahead for a bright future for hockey in India.” Walsh had initially raised a number of concerns about the current state of the sport in India and his contract. Sports Authority of India Director, General Jiji Thomson, said that Walsh’s issues will be resolved in the very near future and he will be signing a new contract prior to his current one expiring next month.

“Since we never accepted his resignation, the question of its withdrawal does not arise. As per his contract, Walsh had to give us a month's notice period which he gave today,” Thomson told PTI. “We had a fruitful meeting with him today. The issues which he had raised can easily be solved and we have assured him that they will be solved before his contract expires on 19th

YORKSHIRE: The Tour started its route in Leeds before heading through Yorkshire for two days where crowds flocked to catch a glimpse of cycling’s elite

Belluschi investigated

Leeds United player, Giuseppe Belluschi is being investigated by the sport’s governing body after an allegation of racism was made against him by Norwich City’s Cameron Jerome. The Italian defender was involved in an altercation with the well-travelled forward during Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw at Carrow Road. Jerome alleges that Belluschi made a racist remark to him and the two players were seen arguing on the pitch before the half time whistle. Moments the striker was booked for a late tackle on his opponent. Having not heard the comments, referee Mark Clattenburg included the claims in his final report and passed the information, including statements from the two players, onto the relevant authorities. Canaries’ manager, Nigel Adams, said the club will be backing their player throughout the investigation whilst Leeds boss, Darko Milanic, said he had not yet got the full details of the confrontation.

Le Tour announced Millions of people lined the streets, towns and cities turned yellow, and England welcomed in the world, as the most memorable start of a Tour de France in history arrived on these shores. The legacy that the competition has left behind in the nation can be seen throughout the country whether it is the symbolic yellow bicycles that still decorate the traditional towns or the huge increase of cyclists on roads today. With the 2015 route announced earlier this week, the question now remains ‘how can it get any better than England?’. Tasked with the challenge of emulating this year’s successes are

November. “We will issue him a new contract, which will take into consideration all his demands,” he said. Asked whether Walsh, who had guided the Indian team to a historic gold at Incheon Asian Games, will continue to be India's chief coach, Thomson said: “Yes, there is no question about it. He will continue in his role with the team.”

Can 2015 route emulate success of UK Tour? the Netherlands and Belgium. The prior have staged five Grand Departs in the past so they certainly know what the race entails yet following in the footsteps of Leeds’ introduction is going to be no easy task. To make things even harder, it appears that one of the world’s best cyclists, if not the best, is already contemplating his withdrawal from next year’s

spectacle in favour of other competitions. In a statement released by the 2013 Tour winner, Chris Froome, the Sky rider said he has to ‘seriously consider’ what the team’s decision is. He said: “The team and I will have to give it some careful consideration before we make any commitments to which of the grand tours I will compete in.

“The Giro [d’Italia] with its inclusion of a long TT of 60km and tough uphill finishes will make it a well-balanced race, which suits me well. “If I did the Giro I may also be able to get myself back to top shape for the Vuelta [e Espana] and go there with a realistic chance of aiming for the win. In the past I’ve only targeted one grand tour each season but it could be a good opportunity for me to focus seriously on two.” One thing is for sure, if the Dutch and Belgian populations get behind the race like England did, 2015 will be set to be another race to remember.

TEST-ing relationship

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has expressed its concern in regard to the current dispute between India’s and West Indies’ cricket boards yet confirmed they are powerless to intervene. Relations between the two authorities broke down earlier this month after the West Indies team cancelled their series in India after a dispute between the players and board about pay. In response, the Indian cricket board, the richest in the world, decided to suspend all future tours with the Caribbean team and are taking legal action which threatens to have a significant financial impact on the less affluent tourists. The ICC said on Wednesday that the case would be closely monitored by the board over the coming months. “The ICC hopes that the matter will be resolved amicably, but clarified that, unless the matter is otherwise referred to it, it does not have the power to intervene in disputes resulting from a bilateral FTP tour,” the ICC said. “The ICC added that the matter will be discussed at the ICC Board meeting, which is scheduled for 10 November in Dubai. Until then, the ICC will make no further comment on this matter.”

SPORT The ICC Academy and the Pakistan international Azhar Mahmood are coming together to stage a groundbreaking Twenty20-specific cricket camp later this month. Azhar, one of the most soughtafter short-form cricketers in the world, will stage the camp from 24th October to 1st November at the state-of-the-art facility at Dubai Sports City with the aim of honing players’ Twenty20 skills and thinking. The camp, believed to be the first of its kind anywhere in the world, will be open to juniors, adults and corporates, with daytime and evening sessions meaning that it will suit any timing. Azhar has played in Twenty20 competitions all over the world for more than a decade, and commenting on the announcement of the cricket camp at the ICC Academy, he said: “The advent of Twenty20 has brought with it new shots, many different variations with the ball and a whole new level of athleticism in the field. “But while there are plenty of coaching courses that teach the basics of the game, there are none that I know about that will coach these new techniques and approaches. “Our aim is to cover off this gap in learning with this new camp, the first of which will take place later this month. It is an exciting idea, I am delighted to have joined forces with the ICC Academy to put the project together and I cannot wait for us to get started.” Azhar Mahmood was part of the Surrey side in England that won the first-ever domestic Twenty20 title, in 2003, and since then he has played in the Pepsi Indian Premier League with Kings XI Punjab, as well as in Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies. Thanks to his clever and subtle medium-pace variations and his ability to strike the ball powerfully, Azhar has become one of the most sought-after players in the Twenty20 game. He is one of only 13 players in history to have played more than 200 matches of Twenty20 cricket and now he will be sharing the vast amount of knowledge he has accumulated with players young and old at the ICC Academy. ICC Academy Manager Will Kitchen said: “We are delighted to be teaming up with Azhar

Mahmood for this innovative new camp and we are really excited about it. “We saw first-hand in Dubai the popularity of Twenty20 cricket earlier this year when the Pepsi Indian Premier League played to sell-out crowds at Dubai Sports City and that was repeated when Pakistan played Australia in front of another full house earlier this month. “With our state-of-the-art facilities, including two full-sized ovals, the latest technology at our disposal and our outstandng coaches who will be working alongside Azhar during the camp, we are all set to provide a great experience to those people who take part.

“The ICC Academy prides itself on being a hub for elite cricket and a place where we look to take the game forward. Our use of soils from around the world to replicate pitch conditions from different countries is just one example of that, and by hosting this Twenty20-specific camp we believe we are once again at the forefront of an exciting new innovation.” Azhar, who has played 21 Test matches and 143 One-Day Internationals for Pakistan and featured in three consecutive ICC Cricket World Cups, added that ahead of the start of the camp there would be a further major announcement. “We have confirmed the presence of a special guest coach during the camp – one of the biggest names in the history of the game – and we will be announcing details of that guest in the near future so watch this space,” he said. Azhar also said the launch of the camp was not the signal he was calling time on his

playing career. “I have a gap in my schedule between playing commitments and this camp is the perfect way to spend my time before that next action,” he said. “I have learnt so much playing Twenty20 cricket for more than a decade and this is a great opportunity for me to pass on that knowledge to others. “And to be able to do it in the world-class surroundings of the ICC Academy at Dubai Sports City is fantastic.” Dubai Sports City General Manager – Sports Business Mr Maqbul Dudhia said: “This announcement is exciting news for both the ICC Academy and another illustration of the way things are really buzzing at Dubai Sports City. “We are in the midst of two months of top-class cricket action with the Australia, Pakistan and New Zealand squads playing and training at the Dubai International Stadium and the ICC Academy, and next month will see the UAE, Afghanistan, Ireland and Scotland squads take part in a camp of their own ahead of next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup. “The swimming academy and fitness suite are about to open to complete the facilities at the Sports Village that also includes the already hugely successful Dubai Sports City Football Academy, and preparations are in full swing for the Dubai Open golf championship, the finale to the 2014 Asian Tour, at The Els Club. “These are exciting times at Dubai Sports City and this cricket camp is another part of that excitement as we go from strength to strength,” he added.

SIGNED: Nico Hulkenberg is all smiles with Force India Chief operating officer, Otmar Szafnauer, as he signs a contract extension for next year

Hulkenberg to STAY After a season to remember for the whole Force India team, star driver Nico Hulkenberg has put pen to paper as he signed on for another year with the constructors. The 27-year-old German has helped guide Force India to their highest point’s total in their sevenyear history with his haul of 76, alongside teammate Sergio Perez’s 47, totalling up to a huge 123 points. Hulkenberg’s blistering start to his life with the constructors saw him clinch six top-six finishes in his first seven outings, and has only missed out on points in three races this campaign. With three more outings remaining this year, IN the US, Brazil and Abu Dhabi, the on-form driver is currently five points ahead of his nearest rival, WilliamsMercedes’ Felipe Massa, and trails Jenson Button, in seventh place, by 18 points. Hulkenberg’s career best finish saw him clinch tenth spot in 2013, whilst part of the Sauber-Ferrari setup, and it seems only a miracle would deny him a higher position this year. Vijay Mallya, Team Principal and Managing Director said everyone in the team was delighted to see the driver remain with Force India for the upcoming season. “We rate him very highly and he has done a tremendous job this year by consistently picking up crucial championship points,” he said. “We know him extremely well: he’s a true racer and he knows how to motivate the team. I am convinced he is one of the best talents on the grid and I am proud that he will continue to race in the colours of Sahara Force India.” Nico Hulkenberg added that he was glad to have been able to

confirm his plans for next season. “This is a team I know extremely well and we’ve enjoyed a great year together with some special results. “The team has big ambitions and I believe we can have a competitive package once again next year. “We have a strong partner in Mercedes and everyone in the team is motivated and hungry for more success. I have a good feeling for 2015 and there is a lot to be excited about as we try to build on the results we have achieved this year.” Hulkenberg has previously raced for Sauber and Williams in the past, and is currently enjoying his second spell with Force India.

As all eyes focus in on the inaugural Indian Super League, it is the third tier of Indian football which tragically made the headlines this past week as a young midfielder died when celebrating a goal. Peter Biaksangzuala landed awkwardly after netting Bethlehem Vengthlang’s equaliser against Chanmari West, when he attempted a somersault celebration. The 23-year-old damaged his spinal cord in the celebration and was rushed to hospital where he underwent a CT scan before being admitted to the intensive care unit. He spent five days in care but was pronounced dead after being put on a ventilator. A statement on behalf of the Mizoram Premier League, the league which Biaksangzuala played in, was released via their official Facebook page. It read: “It has been a sad day for Mizoram football and the demise of the footballer shook his team-mates, footballers and fans alike all over Mizoram. “Peter was a defensive midfielder who had always been aggressive and hard working, a true team player. “Peter's club Bethlehem Vengthlang FC will retire his jersey no. 21.” Bethlehem coach Danny Lalduhawma added: “Peter was a lad with good manner who always maintained his discipline on and off the pitch. I don’t think there are many like him.”
