REMEMBER 100 years on from the First World War
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A century on from the start of the First World War and the brave lives of those killed in battle are still remembered today, with the symbolic poppy proudly displayed across the nation in build up to Remembrance Day. What began in 1914 finally came to a conclusion on the 11th FAITHS: As well as November 1918 as the Armistice the standard poppy, a Agreement was signed by number of wooden Germany and the allies which stake designs are also available from the Royal signalled an end to the Great War. Today, the Royal British Legion Whether it is an injured soldier continues to fundraise for the or the family of those involved in Armed Forces, past and present, battle, funds go towards catering for those who are coping with bereavement, living with disability, or trying to find employment. As well as displaying a poppy on your clothing, wooden stakes, with poppies attached, have also been sold recently to be placed in the ground as a sign of remembrance. An array of designs are available to commemorate the war efforts of different faiths and are proving a popular fundraising initiative for members of all faiths. As well as the plain design, a wooden cross (Christianity), crescent (Islam), star (Judaism) and Sikh Khanda are all available for
purchase from the Royal British Legion stores. At the Kirkgate Market store, volunteer Balbir Singh, explained how important it was for him to be able remember all the Sikh soldiers who lost their lives in battle. “This year marks one hundred years since the start of the First World War,” he said. “The Sikh contribution in the First World War was huge. Around 80,000 Sikh soldiers died, and contributed to the British Army’s efforts. “We are laying a reef at the memorial on the Headrow this Sunday and there will be a sikh community presence there as well to remember those who sadly died.”
Mohammed Siddique’s father, Goolam Hussein Bawa, fought in both World Wars after immigrating to England from Kashmir. His son proudly keeps his father’s memory alive today through attending memorial projects and will be laying a poppy reef
HONOUR: Mr Siddique will be laying a reef at the Leeds War Memorial this weekend

at the Leeds War Memorial this weekend. Mr Hussein was a highly decorated soldier in the Merchant Navy, being awarded many medals for his long-serving military career, including the Atlantic Star. The honour was bestowed upon him for his involvement in Battle of Atlantic which saw German U-boats attempt to halt Britain’s war efforts by attacking convoys from transporting supplies from America and the colonies. Mr Hussein even returned to his native Kashmir at one point to recruit more volunteers for the armed forces and sadly passed away just one year after leaving the Merchant Navy.
Mr Siddique said Remembrance Sunday is an event which should be respected by all, regardless of religion or beliefs. He said: “My father never cared about the long hours or money – he just wanted to serve in the Merchant Navy. “I’m so proud of what he did, because it’s because of people like him that opened the way for me and everyone else to come to the UK and live here and be proud to be British. “He was willing to give his life for Britain and he wasn’t even British. This is the message we need to give our children and youth of today, because this country has given us an awful lot.”

Defence Secretary visits India Secretary of State for Defence Michael Fallon MP visited India at the end of last month as he led the United Kingdom’s commemorations to recognise India’s contribution and sacrifice during World War One. In recognition of the huge Indian contribution to the country’s war efforts, and as a mark of respect for the Indian servicemen who gave their lives, Mr Fallon laid a wreath at India Gate, before hosting a large-scale commemoration event at the British High Commission in New Delhi. During the reception, the Secretary of State unveiled Victoria Cross (VC) memorials, commemorating the six VCs that were won by soldiers from the current territory of India. He presented the memorials to the Indian Minister of Defence, along with digitised war diaries of the India Corps that fought in France and Flanders and other commemorative items. The visit had personal significance for the Secretary of State, whose grandfather Captain Harold Spink served in the Indian Army, and formed part of the Indian expeditionary force that fought in Mesopotamia. Mr Fallon commented: “India and the UK are natural partners. The events I've attended and the discussions I've held today are the clearest possible evidence that this partnership is deep, broad and long-standing. “In a moving ceremony to mark the enormous contribution made by Indian servicemen during the First World War, Defence Minister Jaitley and I reflected on the common values which India and the UK shared then and still share now. There was, rightly, great pride on both sides. “We also looked forward, to consider how our countries can work together in tackling the many security challenges threatening global and regional security. And our shared pride at events a century ago stands us in very good stead as we embark together on that work.”
Mahmood Raja is also the son of a war-hero who fought during the Second World War with British Indian Navy. Subab Ali Shan was awarded 18 medals during his time in the British and Pakistani forces for everything from service conduct to bravery. After fighting with the British Indian Navy between 1941 and 1947, he was transferred to the Pakistan Navy following their independence. Sadly, Mr Shan died just three months into his retirement as a lieutenant commander at the age of just 52. He said he had initially wanted to continue his father’s legacy by joining the armed forces but was unfortunately only able to complete one year in his role. “It was always a dream of mine to be in the Navy or the Air Force,” he explained. “When I finally joined up in Pakistan I was told a little while later that I had to return to England or lose my citizenship. FREE: A huge pot of food is stirred up at the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha which is handed out free of charge to people who visit the site in need of a meal FAMILY: A mother and her son enjoy the free meal in Leeds
‘world’s oldest soup kitchen’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
For more than 500 years, Sikhs around the world have been preparing, sharing and eating food, known as ‘langar’, with the wider community. Now, as the nationwide need for
foodbanks and soup kitchens continues to grow, seven days of awareness are being held to promote the concept to all people in need of a free meal. Langar is a term used to describe the free kitchen and food initiative that is served to visitors at a Sikh Gurdwara. A central part of their religion, the concept was designed by the founder of

the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in the 15th century, in order to uphold the principle of equality between all people regardless of their background. In Leeds, the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha (GNNSJ) is just one Gurdwara which provides langar to those who visit the site, 365 days a year. Operating an open door policy, any person, of any faith, is welcome to visit the place of worship for a free meal. GNNSJ Chairman, Harbans Singh Sagoo, explained how important it was for greater awareness to be created to help people ‘struggling in society’. “Wherever you go in the world, a Gurdwara will provide a free meal when it can,” Mr Sagoo said. “In Leeds there are at least two that provide langar every day and we regularly have a diverse range of people coming down to use the service. “People are facing more and more problems now because of the economy and this has brought forward the concept of foodbanks. “We as the Sikh community want to let people know that the system of langar is available to them and by having this National Langar Week, we are attempting to create more awareness.” He added: “Our scriptures say
that ‘where the spirit of God prevails, nobody should go hungry’ and we must practice our faith, not just preach it. “Langar is a concept that can help people, particularly those who are homeless or socially deprived, and so we must help who we can.” Every meal served is suitable for vegetarians as to cater for people of all beliefs, including Muslim (halal) and Jewish
FOOD: A volunteer pours pasta into one of the huge preparation pans as they prepare langar
(kosher), regardless of where the gurdwara is in the world. The central gurdwara for the Sikh faith, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and serve up to 50,000 meals a day free of charge and that number can increase to more than 80,000 during celebrations. Mr Sagoo said he does everything he can to ensure all people are catered for when they come to the door of the Beestonbased Gurdwara yet accepted that there are sometimes challenges to overcome. “Langar has been abused in the past with people who are perhaps drunk or on drugs coming to the gurdwara and being disruptive. “This causes a conflict, because as men of faith we need to show compassion, yet they cannot come in to the place of worship if they are behaving poorly. “Therefore, we invested in plastic boxes to carry food so now if someone comes to the door and is drunk or disorderly, we give them the food in a box to take away and eat. “We would still much rather people come inside to sit down and talk to us because that is how you forge friendships and learn about each other’s lives.” National Langar Week is officially held this year between 1st and 7th November.

BUSINESS: Dr Akbar says the new site has already cost the Mumtaz business more than £5million since construction began, with a further million yet to be invested
APPEAL Fraud verdict over ‘non-existent’ £100,000 set to be challenged Cover story continued Dr Gul-Nawaz Khan Akbar, of Mumtaz, says he is determined to overturn the ruling following a £100,000 fraud case which even the recorder on the day described as an ‘unfortunate’ and ‘unusual’ decision by the jury at Bradford Crown Court. Dr Akbar was given a nine-month suspended sentence for one year and ordered to pay £34,000 in costs after a conviction for fraud by misrepresentation. The trial centred on a £100,000 grant application from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) which was supposed to go towards the new £5million Mumtaz factory on Legrams Lane in Bradford. However, following complications with planning back in 2011, alongside a number of unavoidable delays, the firm were unable to spend the £1.1million
they needed to, in order to receive the funding, before the 11th December deadline. As no invoices existed for the building’s development, due to it still being in negotiation stage with the contractor, Dr Akbar says he submitted ‘dummy invoices’ as allegedly advised by BIS as a way of ensuring his bid could be placed before the deadline – a procedure Dr Akbar says he was told would be ‘okay’ to proceed with. Unbeknown to Dr Akbar, the change in government policy led to BIS being ordered to withdraw grants by the Treasury wherever possible. In order to achieve this, the Mumtaz application was turned away, despite their ‘dummy invoices’ initially being approved and then were to be exchanged for actual invoices when made available just months later to Mumtaz’s representing solicitors. Speaking about the case
and his upcoming appeal, Dr Akbar said he was disappointed to see his business ‘targeted’ by a ‘fraud’ case which threatened to hamper Mumtaz’s reputation. “I feel that Mumtaz has been targeted in a case that even the judge described as ‘unfortunate’,” Dr Akbar said. “We have already invested in excess of £5million of our own funds into the project and will have to spend a further £1million before the development is completed. “This £100,000, which we never even received, was made available to us, and all I did was follow the instructions given to me. “We were trying to help the city benefit, by creating hundreds of new jobs, and this investment would have gone towards funding the development. “I feel like somebody has tried to make an example of us, like there is a hidden agenda to target a big name

business.” The jury at the trial consulted for less than an hour before a guilty verdict was put forward, a time frame Dr Akbar and his defence team argues was ‘clearly not enough’ for them to have considered all the evidence. “My family and I were truly shocked by the verdict after all the evidence was heard throughout the five day trial.” said Dr Akbar. “I am determined to fight on. “I am grateful to the trial judge who described this as a very unusual case and for stating that I am a businessman who …’through his own diligence and hard work, together with that of his family, had contributed a huge amount to the Bradford community and had created a business that Bradford was rightly proud
Local of’. “We have 28 days to appeal the verdict and will follow it through however far we have to go.” Meanwhile, Recorder Hawks said: “I regard this as a highly unusual case because the fact of the matter is that you didn’t get the money.” “You did build the factory and
we’ve all seen the structure that now exists and will no doubt carry your successful business forward.” Recorder Hawks added that it was ‘a great shame’ to see a businessman with such a background and with as much experience as Dr Akbar convicted of an offence of fraud.
“We were trying to help the city benefit, by creating hundreds of new jobs, and this investment would have gone towards funding the development. I feel like somebody has tried to make an example of us, like there is a hidden agenda to target a big name business.”

CHAMPIONS: The Curry Capital winning bid team finally got their hands on the trophy last weekend after being named as winners last month
City receives trophy as to round off ‘amazing bid’
Curry Royalty Crowned By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Bradford’s reign as the Curry Capital of Britain was cemented last weekend as the prestigious trophy returned ‘home’ for a fourth consecutive year. At an awards ceremony at Zaara’s Indian Restaurant on Sunday, the Bradford bid team, made up of members from Visit Bradford and local restaurateurs, received their official accolade from the organisers of the Curry Capital of Britain
competition. Founder and organiser, Peter Grove, along with his wife Colleen, are becoming familiar faces in the city as they returned once again to hand over the trophy at an afternoon reception. Special guests also included the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Mike Gibbons, and Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe. Tricia Tillotson, Tourism Manager for Bradford Council, said it was great to finally receive the trophy after being confirmed as the official Curry Capital last month.
HAND-OVER: Bradford Council Tourism Manager, Tricia Tillotson, receives the award from Curry Capital of Britain founder, Peter Grove
“We’re delighted to welcome Peter and his wife back to the Bradford district to officially present us with the Curry Capital of Britain award for the fourth time in a row,” she said. “We know that this year’s competition was tough but we were delighted to learn that we had actually improved our score by nine per cent on last year’s marks.” Attendees at the event enjoyed a buffet of Asian finger food provided by Zaara’s, as well as complementary drinks, while enjoying the atmosphere inside of the restaurant. Ms Tillotson continued: “The awards event was a very special way to mark the occasion – no other city or region has ever won the accolade of Curry Capital of the Year consecutively this many times – and to celebrate the hard work of our winning team. “It was a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon; celebrating success with good company, and of course, good Asian food.” Visit Bradford’s bid for the 2014 title included a number of initiatives and activities, such as a series of poppadom challenges, an Asian afternoon tea and a healthy-style Asian cookbook created in connection with the NHS. The recipe book is available from Bradford Visitor Information Centre and is free to takeaway or a donation can be made to the Curry Tree charity.
WARD: The trophy will remain in Bradford for an unprecedented fourth year in a row as the city is reaffirmed as the Curry Capital of Britain

A Leicester-based writer, who clinched a Leeds writer’s award last month, has twice the number of reasons to celebrate after clinching her second award in just 10 days. Mahsuda Snaith clinched the 2014 SI Leeds Literary Prize for her short story, ‘The Constellation of Ravine Roy’ after being alerted of her nomination on her 33rd birthday. The competition, which looks to award Black and Asian women for their works of unpublished fiction, was ‘brilliant’ according to Mahsuda yet the best was yet to come. Last week, the budding writer made it a double swoop when she was awarded the 2014 Bristol Short Story Prize, for another tale, ‘The Art of Flood Survival’, which tells the story of a Bangladeshi house girl. In order to receive the title, alongside £1,000 in prize money, she had to defeat more than 2,400 entries in this year’s awards with writers submitting entries from 60 different countries. Mahsuda said she was surprised to have claimed the pair of awards so close to each other but was now excited to see her work published. “I’m a bit stunned by it,” she said. “I’m over the moon about winning especially because I’ve read the Bristol Short Story anthologies before, and [they are] always such good quality. “It’s amazing, I was just happy to be in the anthology.

Double Delight Winning is a massive bonus.” This year’s judging panel was chaired by writer and former BBC Radio 4 producer, Sara Davies, who was joined by literary agent, Rowan Lawton, writer, broadcaster and academic, Sanjida O’Connell and writer, journalist and performer, Nikesh Shukla. Sara Davies praised the winning story and said: “Mahsuda’s story about a young Bangladeshi servant girl is tender and tough, and impressed us all with its sureness of touch. “The voice of its young narrator, with its mix of hope and cynicism, longing and pragmatism, is both believable and compelling, and her determination to turn the world to her advantage against all odds is beautifully and boldly explored with some lovely touches of sharp humour.” Elsewhere, Claire Griffiths, a graduate of UEA Creative Writing MA, won 2nd prize for her story, ‘Tata and Mama and Me’, whilst Tom Vowler, author of two novels and a short story collection, won third Prize with ‘Debt’.

Poor student drop-out risk is ‘higher’
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Poor university students are more likely to drop out and less likely to graduate with a good degree, even if they started their course with similar grades to their richer peers, according to research. It suggests that those from deprived backgrounds may do less well in higher education because they did less well at school, and also that they may need more support while at university to make sure they leave with decent results. The study, published by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) analysed information on English students who began studying at a UK university between 2004/05 and 2009/10. Researchers found that in general, students from the most disadvantaged homes are 8.4 percentage points more likely to drop out of university within two years of starting their course, compared to those from the most advantaged backgrounds. They are also 13.3 percentage points less likely to complete their degree within five years, and 22.9 percentage points less likely to graduate with a first or 2:1. There are still "significant" differences even when a student's own grades are taken into account, the study found. Among students who began university with similar grades to take the same degree course, those from the poorest backgrounds are still 3.4 percentage points more likely to
drop out of their studies than those from the richest homes. And they are still 5.3 percentage points less likely to complete their degree and 3.7 percentage points less likely to achieve a first or 2:1. The findings indicate that a key part of any measures to cut inequalities in the degree chances between the richest and the poorest students should be to "increase the attainment of those from the poorest families earlier in the school system," the study says. It also argues that the fact that youngsters from deprived backgrounds do less well on average at university than their richer peers, even when they have similar prior attainment, suggests that poor students may need extra support at university to enable them to succeed. Study author Claire Crawford said: "Our research highlights that there are large differences in university outcomes by socioeconomic background, a substantial proportion of which can be explained by differences in attainment earlier in the education system. "While improving the attainment of students from disadvantaged backgrounds at school is likely to aid their performance at university as well, we find non-negligible differences in university outcomes between students from different socio-economic backgrounds at the same university, studying the same subject, who arrived with the same grades. "This suggests that universities may wish to focus on improving the progression and performance of students from disadvantaged backgrounds as well as widening access."

Tackling exploitation
Kirklees Council has set up a cross-party panel to monitor developments in – and the local response to – child sexual exploitation (CSE). The five-member panel has representatives from each political group on the council and will work with officers and partner organisations with the aim of further improving the local response to CSE. There is already close working between several Kirklees agencies including the police, health services, schools, Barnardo’s and a wide range of council services such as social care, learning, licensing and youth support. All work on CSE is overseen by Kirklees Safeguarding Children Board. The panel will meet in private due to the confidentiality of much its work but, where appropriate, it will report back in public to give updates on progress and emerging issues.
‘Bobby Collins Way’
A test that involves swallowing a sponge on a string provides a reliable way of diagnosing a precancerous condition of the oesophagus, or food pipe, research has shown. The Cytosponge proved safe and accurate in a study of more than 600 patients with Barrett's Oesophagus. The condition is caused by acid coming up from the stomach and is a serious risk factor for oesophageal cancer. Over time it can lead to
potentially cancerous changes in the cells that line the oesophagus. Barrett's Oesophagus is usually diagnosed by removing a tissue sample using an endoscope, a thin flexible tube passed down the oesophagus. The procedure is unpleasant for patients and carries some risks. In the trial, more than 94% of patients who swallowed the sponge reported no serious sideeffects. Lead author Professor
Rebecca Fitzgerald, from Cambridge University, said: "The Cytosponge test is safe, acceptable and has very good accuracy for diagnosing Barrett's Oesophagus. It should be considered as an alternative to endoscopy for diagnosing the condition and could possibly be used as a screening test in primary care." The research was presented at the National Cancer Research Institute's annual meeting in Liverpool.

UK secures €1 billion European Ebola commitment The Prime Minister, David Cameron, has secured a €1 billion (£800 million) funding pledge at the European Council meetings in Brussels, following a call for European leaders to do more to fight the disease in West Africa. As part of the commitment, the UK has boosted its own response to the Ebola crisis in West Africa by £80 million, bringing its total contribution to more than £200 million. The Prime Minister wrote to the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, and fellow leaders last week to warn of the need to act fast to contain and defeat this deadly virus, stating: “If we do not significantly step up our collective response now, the loss of life and damage to the political, economic and social fabric of the region will be substantial and the threat posed to our citizens will also grow." The Prime Minister set out that the immediate priority was to raise contributions from the EU and its member states to €1 billion in total, which has now been achieved. Britain's own redoubled efforts to fight Ebola follow a visit to
Sierra Leone by International Development Secretary Justine Greening to see the results of Britain’s first tranche of support and identify next steps in the UK’s international work. The additional £80 million will increase the number of burial units and support the creation of up to 200 community care centres across the country. Together these measures will promote early diagnosis, isolation and treatment and so reduce the risk of the infection spreading. David Cameron said: “Ebola is one of the worst public health emergencies we have faced in a generation. I have been absolutely determined that Britain, with other countries, will lead the way in dealing with this. “Not only should we feel a moral obligation as a wealthy country to help, but also because Ebola directly threatens both our national interests and people in the United Kingdom. “That is why Britain has pledged over £205 million and has British troops and health workers going to West Africa. “I said I wanted to come to this European Council and get other
countries in the European Union to more than double the EU effort, to get a billion Euros committed. “That is what we have achieved.” Justine Greening said: “Visiting Sierra Leone was a chance to see the results we are already achieving in our fight against Ebola. This includes the heroic efforts of British medics, soldiers and humanitarian workers, as well as Sierra Leoneans who are volunteering in their thousands to be trained as healthcare and burial workers. “Being on the ground also gave me a clear sense of what is needed in the next phase of our work, and the steps we must take to ensure our efforts match the scale of the crisis the country is facing. “Britain is determined to stand with the people of Sierra Leone as they battle Ebola.” Ms Greening’s recent visit was also an opportunity to thank the British heroes who have travelled to Sierra Leone to fight this disease, including humanitarian aid workers, medics, government officials and military personnel, all of whom are playing a crucial role in Britain’s response.
ISOLATION UNIT: Ebola is one of the worst public health emergencies we have faced in a generation
The additional support announced today includes the following: £10 million to ensure safe burials This funding will include support for the important work of the burial teams run by the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC). Ten teams are already fully operational and the IFRC have begun recruitment to increase their capacity. It will also support NGOs in their work to help the Sierra Leonean Ministry of Health in promoting behaviour change activities to ensure safe burial practices.
£50 million to diagnose and isolate Ebola cases Early isolation of Ebola patients is essential to halting the spread of infection to others. This support will cover the staffing and running costs, as well medical supplies and protective equipment, for local diagnosis and care centres already being piloted across Sierra Leone – and enable the construction of up to 200 centres over the next three months. This will ensure thousands of patients across Sierra Leone receive a swift diagnosis and provide the isolation facilities needed to reduce the spread of the outbreak.
£20 million contribution to the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund This will ensure the UN has the resources needed to significantly step up their contribution to the Ebola effort in Sierra Leone and gives us a strong platform to lobby other countries to contribute to the global effort.
Fatal crash under investigation
Police are still investigating the cause of a horrific car crash in Bradford which led to the tragic death of two teenagers. 18-year-old Ather Ayaz, and Mohammed Hamza Ali, also 18, were killed when the red Honda Civic they were travelling in left the road and drove through a bollard on Manningham Lane earlier this week. Shortly before the collision, police believe the car was involved in a separate collision with a silver Audi A4. A man and woman, both aged 20, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail. Sergeant Ann Drury, of the Major Collision Enquiry Team at West Yorkshire Police, said that the cause of the crash was still uncertain yet confirmed the incident occurred around 7.30pm on Tuesday 4th November. Sgt Drury said: “We believe there was some sort of incident between the two vehicles but we are at a very early stage of the investigation and we are trying to establish the circumstances. “It occurred a few minutes before the fatal collision and we are led to believe it was a little distance away. “We are keen to hear from anyone who saw anything occur between the Audi and the Honda.” A Facebook page has been set up in remembrance of the two teenagers with messages left by friends and family.

Festive food hygiene
People planning Christmas meals are being urged to make sure they steer clear of potential food poisoning. Environmental Health Officers at Bradford Council are telling people to check the food hygiene rating of the restaurant they choose for their festive get-together with friends, family or colleagues. You can’t tell a restaurant’s hygiene standards by how clean it looks or by how busy it is. Food poisoning is caused by germs which multiply and spread through bad hygiene practices The best way to set your mind at rest is to check the food hygiene rating which tells you about hygiene standards in restaurants and other food businesses. To check, just go online and check the Food Standards Agency website, www.food.gov.uk/ratings or check the restaurant for the green and black sticker. If you can’t see one, just ask. Asian

Headteacher pleads for more the older years of primary school, I think the reading time “Introuble is that children just don't read enough.” Children should spend a "peaceful" hour in school each day reading a book, a headteachers' leader is suggesting. Spending time reading a novel would help youngsters to enjoy reading, and do more to improve their skills than "frantic coaching to the test", according to Russell Hobby, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT). In a new blog, he says there is no complete answer to what children should read, and argues for primary schools to publish their own lists of the books pupils will read by the time they leave at age 11. This would be more useful than lists of activities designed to promote British values. Mr Hobby says that there is nothing more important than being able to read well, but adds that successive policies designed to teach children to read - such as the current promotion of phonics which focuses on using sounds rather than recognising whole words - and the last government's Literacy Hour - tend to drive towards learning the technical side of reading, and away from stories. There is evidence that phonics works for teaching the largest amount of children to decode
words, he acknowledges, but it does not work for every child and decoding is not the only part of reading. "The official advocation of phonics has at times appeared to risk caricature when it neglects the development of vocabulary and the habits of storytelling," Mr Hobby argues. In the early years, when children are in nursery and infants school, there need to be a focus on speaking and listen, he says. "In the older years of primary school, I think the trouble is that children just don't read enough. We should strip back the social engineering and the constant initiatives forced on schools and just spend time reading. "What if in every school every pupil spent an hour a day reading fiction from the ages of seven to 11? What if teachers could settle down alongside them and read too? A peaceful time but an immensely productive one. Ironically, this would lift standards far more than frantic coaching to the test. What burdens could be lifted off schools to make this practice widespread?"
Mr Hobby goes on to say that there are many arguments about "canon" - the books that children should read. "What should a well-educated child have read by age 11? There is no complete answer. What if every primary school created and published its own canon? These are the books your child will have read by the time they leave and here's why we think they're great. "I'd rather see this on a school website than a list of activities to promote British values. And I'd learn far more about the school." Ministers announced earlier this year in the wake of investigations into the Trojan Horse scandal in
Birmingham that in future, all schools will be required to ''actively promote'' British values such as democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, the rule of law and individual liberty. Speaking as the blog was published, Mr Hobby said that he was not against teaching technical aspects of reading. But he added: "The danger is, if all you do is practice analysing different sentences then it becomes a chore rather than a pleasure." The union leader also suggested that more room could be made in schools for reading, if there was a reduction in the demands on schools' time.

Young Muslims head to streets for poppy appeal

Young members of a local Muslim community joined forces with representatives of the Royal British Legion (RBL) last weekend as more than £1,700 was raised for charity. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) headed out to the home of Huddersfield Town Football Club as they took part in the annual poppy appeal. For the fifth year in a row, the 1st November was officially recognised by the RBL as the ‘Ahmadiyya Muslim Poppy Appeal Day’ whereby volunteers from the group collect funds for the worthy cause. More than 20 youngsters, some aged just four-years-old, got their buckets at the ready for a collection at the John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday helping to raise a total amount of £1,712. Kamal Aftab, AMYA Regional Youth Leader for Yorkshire, said the day was extremely rewarding for the young volunteers who helped out on the day. “One of the fundamental teachings of our religon is that the reward for goodness is goodness alone,” he said. “The United Kingdom has provided us with so many opportunities for which we are truly grateful. “As Muslims it is our responsibility to show loyalty to our country of residence and to stand together for a worthy cause. “We therefore hope that our participation is a clear indication
of our desire for peace and unity between all peoples, nations and religions.” Kamal added that there were a couple of occasions where people questioned his faith’s view on the poppy and he says he was more than happy to help educate the uninformed.
The Royal British Legion, added her praise to the group who have helped to raise tens of thousands of pounds for the poppy appeal since 2010. “AMYA have been crucial in raising funds for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal for several years
“The Legion is extremely pleased with the enthusiasm and commitment from all of the volunteers. Also, we enjoy working with AMYA as they are dedicated and passionate about their charity work, and the Poppy Appeal would not be the same without their help.”
POPPIES: Members of AMYA and the RBL stand side-by-side at the John Smith’s Stadium ahead of their fundraising efforts
“There was this one gentleman who asked why I was collecting for the RBL when I’m Asian,” he said. “I explained to him the meaning of the poppy and our belief in showing loyalty to one’s country, which is very important in our faith.” Deborah Armantrading, from
participating in mass collections all over the UK, some locations including London, Midlands and Scotland,” she said. “Not only providing us with a significant number of volunteer collectors who raised an amazing total of £8,500 for the appeal this year.
Earlier this month over 200 volunteers, belonging to the AMYA, raised funds for the Poppy Appeal at Wembley Stadium whilst their active participation in the Tower of London Poppy installation was also commended by the organisers.

Superfast connectivity
CityFibre has announced the Kirklees CORE - bringing transformational gigabit speed digital connectivity to thousands of local businesses in Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Batley. The construction of the Kirklees CORE will be ‘demand-led’. This means that the size and route the network takes will be determined by demand from local businesses. To map this demand, CityFibre has this week launched a campaign called ‘Gig Up Kirklees’ at a special event at the 3M Innovation Centre in Huddersfield. The ‘Gig Up’ campaign encourages businesses to register their noobligation interest online. The more businesses that register in an area, the more likely the network will be extended to reach them. Construction on the network is due to begin at the end of this year with the first businesses being connected from March 2015. This leaves a window of opportunity for businesses to influence the network roll-out by registering on the Kirklees CORE website.

Savile victims await court decision
Dozens of women who say they were sexually abused by television Leeds-based personality Jimmy Savile are waiting for the result of a Court of Appeal fight which might affect the future of a compensation scheme. Earlier this year, a High Court judge sanctioned the scheme - agreed between the executor of Savile's estate and lawyers representing alleged victims - following a High Court hearing in London in February. Mr Justice Sales also dismissed an attempt to replace the NatWest bank as executor. Bosses of a trust, which is the major beneficiary of Savile's
November 2014 - 1st Edition estate, had raised objections at the High Court hearing. The Jimmy Savile Charitable Trust had wanted the bank replaced as executor. Trust bosses said they were unhappy with the bank's performance as executor and suggested that compensation issues had not been fully thought through. And today they are expected to ask the appeal judges to overturn Mr Justice Sales' decisions. Appeal judges are expected to analyse legal argument over two days at a hearing in London before ruling. Mr Justice Sales heard that Savile, who died in October 2011 aged 84, had been the subject of an ITV television programme broadcast in October 2012. The judge said Savile, who worked at the BBC, had been accused of being a ''serial child abuser and sex offender'' - and was alleged to have abused people in hospitals. He said following the broadcast a ''large number'' of people had come forward to make claims that they were abused by Savile. The judge had described the compensation scheme as a ''sensible and pragmatic'' attempt at solving a ''complex situation''. He said the scheme would allow for ''sufficient objective scrutiny'' of the merits of compensation claims. A solicitor representing alleged victims said, after the High Court hearing, that the scheme would not guarantee
payouts but would provide a framework within which claims could be analysed. Liz Dux, who works for law firm Slater & Gordon, said Mr Justice Sales' decision to sanction the scheme was ''a great result for the victims of Jimmy Savile''. Mr Justice Sales said about 140 people had ''intimated to the bank'' that they had personal injury claims against Savile and his estate in relation to sexual abuse. He said there had also been indications of claims against other organisations Savile had been associated with - the BBC, a number of NHS hospital trusts and the charities Barnardo's and Mind. Lawyers say the number of people intending to make claims has now risen to more than 160. Experts had initially put the value of Savile's estate at around £4 million. But Mr Justice Sales said a ''range of expenses'' had been incurred and the estate's value had been reduced to about £3.3 million. Lawyers representing alleged victims fear that further litigation might run up costs which will eat into money available for compensation. Mr Justice Sales had told alleged victims that they would not be out of pocket as a result of the High Court fight. He ruled that because the trust had lost the High Court battle it should foot legal bills - totalling more than £250,000 - run up by alleged victims and the bank.

LESSONS: Girls from the Annasawmy School in India learn how to play the guitar in one of the classes set up by Kerrie Smith
Taking music to India DRUMMERS: A pair of students try their hand at the drums, an instrument Kerrie has excelled in
A talented graduate from the University of Leeds has started a musical education project to enrich the lives of disadvantaged children in India. Kerrie Smith, from Ashford, Kent, who graduated in 2013 with a First Class Ba(Hons) in Popular and World Musics, is spending nine months developing a music programme at a school in the southern city of Bangalore. On arrival, Kerrie discovered that music is not generally part of the Indian school curriculum, which means many children have no previous musical education. She now teaches drums, guitar and keyboard and provides basic music lessons to disadvantaged students of both primary and secondary school age. “Music education is enormously important in terms of communication skills, personal and emotional development,” she said. “Throughout my touching experience here I have witnessed music operate as an artistic avenue for disadvantaged children to express creativity and advance their confidence. “Teaching children both to share and have faith in their ideas grants an immense sense of achievement and fulfilment.” The 22-year-old says her aim is to write a full music curriculum in which she can hand on to a local volunteer to ensure the project

Beat of the drum echoed around the world continues after her return home. A fundraising appeal has already raised almost £3,000 towards the project, which will also buy more instruments for the music classes and help her develop a programme specifically aimed at children at the school with learning and physical disabilities. It is also hoped that partnerships with music schools back in the UK might provide a reliable source of GUITAR: A fundraising appeal is currently underway to help keep the project running when Kerrie returns to the UK
musical volunteers to travel to India each year and teach on the programme. Dr Simon Warner, programme leader of the School of Music's BA in Popular and World Musics, at the University of Leeds, said the place of education fully supports their former student and plans to work further with Kerrie in the future. “We wish her every success in this admirable scheme. Kerrie was
always a conscientious and quietly determined individual,” Dr Warner said. “She is a superior drummer with interests in popular music in the UK and well beyond – I cannot think of a better person to spread the gospel of music-making further afield. “As a result of Kerrie’s networking, there is even the possibility that there could be opportunities for students in our School to study abroad in the future on a Year in Industry.” The project is based at the notfor-profit Annasawmy School, which has 650 students from impoverished backgrounds.

‘Loss of Control’ A businessman, arrested in April 2014 following the death of his ex-partner, has been cleared of her murder after previously pleading guilty to manslaughter. John Butler, 62, received the unanimous verdict from the jury at Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday 22nd October after a defence of ‘loss of control’ was raised by the defendant. Butler stabbed Pauline Butler at her home numerous times on 14th April 2014 after it is alleged that she threatened to stop her expartner from seeing their granddaughter. The court also heard that Pauline threatened Butler on two previous occasions with a knife. Sentencing the defendant, the judge, Mr Justice Edis accepted that the jury had agreed Butler must have suffered from a ‘loss of control’ at the time of the attack and was thus acquitted of murder. Representing Butler was Mr Abdul Iftikhar of Kamrans Solicitors, who says ‘justice has prevailed’ as Butler was cleared of the murder charge.
Father acquitted of murder after six-month ordeal
TRIAL: John Butler was acquitted of the murder of his ex-partner, Pauline Butler, after stabbing her at her home in Rawdon, Leeds
“Mr Butler has been acquitted of the charge of murder after we successfully argued that he suffered loss of control, a defence that rarely succeeds.”
“The issue of domestic violence is one which is very real in all our communities and recently we have seen a rise in reports to the police,” Mr Iftikhar said. “It is unfortunate to see children becoming embroiled in domestic cases but that is the sad reality of the situation which we currently have. “In the case of Mr Butler, this was truly a tragic case but everybody can draw some comfort from the fact that justice has prevailed with Mr Butler having been acquitted of the charge of murder. “The father, along with his family, had to endure the traumatic experience of not only the loss of a loved one but also the legal proceedings. However, I believe the sentence passed upon Mr Butler on Thursday does justice to the circumstances of the case.” Butler, who ran the Yeadon-based Kettley’s Furniture Centre, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter before the start of the trial. He was sentenced to seven years in prison.
JUSTICE: Abdul Iftikhar, of Kamrans Solicitors, said the right decision had been made after Butler suffered a ‘loss of control’

Fat VAT expanded Bradford’s energy success is ‘changing behaviour of community’
CLOGGED: Fatty oils have been the cause of more than 50 blockages in Bradford Moor’s sewers over the last five years (stock images provided by Yorkshire Water)
RESIDENT: Hena Begum has lived on Amberley Street, Bradford, for more than 20 years and was issued with one of the Fat Vats to dispose of her cooking oil
A renewable energy scheme, which saw bradford households collect their used cooking oil rather than throw it away, has been deemed a ‘big success’ and is set to roll out to a further 50 homes. Six months on from the launch of the Fat Vat scheme, and Yorkshire Water have reported that more than 500 litres of cooking oil has been collected from 85 participating residents from Bradford Moor. The liquid is converted into a biofuel by the renewable energy experts, Living Fuel, and the
total amount collected today is enough to power up a microwave for up to 1,500 hours. Duncan Woodhead, network protection technician at Yorkshire Water, was thrilled with the success of the project so far and was excited to see the project expanding. “The response from the local community to this trial has been excellent and people really do understand the difference they can make by changing their behaviour,” Mr Woodhead said. “We’ve been delighted with the amount of liquid we’ve managed to collect already and are looking forward to offering this to more people, which will help us generate more renewable energy and further reduce the amount of fats, oils and greases entering our network.” By collecting the cooking oil, rather than dumping it down the drain, the scheme has also helped prevent the blockage of sewers created when oils solidify and create ‘fatbergs’.
Since the start of the Fat Vat project, not one single blockage has been reported on either of the streets involved. These statistics are a major improvement on previous results which showed that the Bradford Moor area had been affected by more than 80 sewage blockages in the past five years. As part of the scheme, Yorkshire Water has also teamed up with the local Karmand Centre to learn more about residents’ cooking habits and further inform locals about the problems that occur with the wrong methods of disposal for cooking oil. Nasa Hussain, from the Karmand Centre, added: “By working together, Yorkshire Water and the Karmand Centre have succeeded in changing the way people in this small area of Bradford dispose of their cooking oil. “Most people were unaware of what happened when oil was poured into the drains but this scheme has made a difference.”

QUALIFIED: Carol Shaw presents Aditi Rajgopal with her ‘Work Experience in the Construction Industry’ certificate
www.asianexpress.co.uk
November 2014 - 1st Edition
Building a future Students looks to construct a career
Following just one week’s work experience, a Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) student has laid the first footings for her future career by earning a construction industry level one qualification. Aditi Rajgopal, a lower sixth student and aspiring architect, spent a week last summer at BAM Construction learning about different aspects of their industry. The GSAL student impressed her host employer so much that they awarded her ‘Work Experience in the Construction Industry’, a level one qualification provided by Construction Youth Trust. BAM is known for working on high profile projects such as Leeds Arena and, under its previous name HBG Construction, built a major extension at GSAL’s Alwoodley Gates site to accommodate additional pupils following the 2008 merger of Leeds Grammar School with Leeds Girls’ High School. Carol Shaw, education and community coordinator – northeast BAM Construction Ltd, visited
Aditi at school to present her certificate last week. Praising the young student, she said: “At BAM we are keen to see more women entering professional careers in construction to address the current shortfall, and providing early work experience for girls is positive for future recruitment. “Aditi was a pleasure to work with and she learned a lot about different roles in construction.” During her time on work placement, Aditi designed her dream house using architectural software Revit, studied health and safety issues including first aid, and spent time with different professionals at BAM’s Thorpe Park premises. James Veitch was Aditi’s head of year in year 11 and said the work experience will prove valuable in years to come. He said: “Aditi’s week at BAM was work experience at its best. “Through a range of organisational and practical tasks over the five days she saw all aspects of the company and what the world of work is like.”

Super-teen A partially sighted teenager from Bradford has received a national award recognising his determination and effort in overcoming visual impairment to become an inspiration to others. 16-year-old Usman Zahid, from West Bowling in Bradford, was one of four youngsters presented with the Actionnaires Member of the Year award from a national charity - Action for Blind People (Action). A surprise ceremony for Usman took place at the English Institute for Sport, in Sheffield with British Paralympian Lee Brunton. Usman, who has the eye condition Nystagmus, has been a member of Bradford Actionnaires since it first began in 2008, always leading by example, getting involved in the activities and events on a regular basis. He is now also a volunteer, assisting and guiding other blind and partially sighted youngsters during activities and visits. Usman said: “Having a disability especially visual impairment has always been hard and I was always last to be picked in class at school. “I never thought I would win an award and could help other people in sports. It's a dream come true for me. I hope I can encourage lots of other children with sight loss to put their disability aside and show others that they are no less than the rest.” The judges recognised Usman over hundreds of other blind

Whole-life sentence remains Child killer loses appeal against sentencing Anwar Rosser, the man who killed four-year-old Riley Turner as he slept in his Keighley home earlier this year, has had his appeal against a whole life sentence turned down. The 34-year-old was convicted after admitting to the killing during a ‘savage and gratuitous’ attack back in 2013. Rosser had been staying at the child’s home when he proceeded to stab and strangle the youth as he lay in his bed, killing the ‘happy and bubbly child’. He was handed a whole-life tariff by Bradford Crown Court in February. The former soldier, who had placed an appeal against the length of his sentence, was told his case had been rejected last weekend by three judges at the Court of Appeal in London. The ruling was made by Lord Chief Justice Lord Thomas, Mr Justice Wyn Williams and Mr Justice Sweeney. Alongside the verdict, a separate appeal from murderer Jamie Reynolds, was also dismissed by judges who announced in both cases that there was ‘no basis on which it can properly be argued that a whole-life order was not required’. Lord Thomas added that the punishment handed out for the ‘horrific’ killings were ‘just’ and would not be overturned. Sentencing Rosser, Mr Justice Coulson described him as an ‘exceptionally dangerous man’ who could kill another child if he was ever released, before ruling he should spend the rest of his life in prison. Rosser’s reppresentatives had claimed that the child killer’s whole-life term was ‘manifestly excessive’ and instead there should have been a ‘very long’ finite minimum term which was imposed.

Since the original publication of the UCVR Vision document in 2004, a wide variety of projects and initiatives have been successfully delivered under the UCVR banner, including the regeneration of Fielden Wharf in Todmorden, the pedestrianisation of Hebden Bridge, and improvements along the length of the Rochdale canal between Littleborough and Sowerby Bridge. On Friday 21st November, from 2pm – 5pm, Hebden Bridge Town Hall will host an anniversary conference and exhibition, entitled ‘Taking stock and looking forward’, celebrating the achievements of the scheme, and looking to the next phase of this unique community led initiative.

Music for Youth Choir heads to capital for Schools Prom
PERFORMERS: More than 600 children invaded the streets of Halifax earlier this month as part of a flashmob event to raise awareness of their success
From a flash mob on the streets of Halifax to performing at the Royal Albert Hall, Calderdale’s schoolchildren have certainly found their voice this year and are ready to take on one of the most prestigious school events in the calendar. Pupils from ten primary schools across Halifax will head to London in November as they prepare to perform at the annual Schools Prom event at the Royal Albert Hall. Almost 700 children from Parkinson Lane Community Primary School are spearheading the project alongside their music teachers, turn musical conductors for the ‘Calderdale Massed Ensemble’ team – Shahbaz Hussain and Bobby R.S. The local representatives will perform on one of the nation’s most famous stages as part of the ‘Metamorphosis’ themed concert in the first of three evenings organised by national youth music organisation Music for Youth. A song made famous by the Qawwali legend, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, entitled ‘Tumhein Dillagi’ will be performed by the schools, bringing a whole new genre of music to the Schools Prom. Musical conductor, Bobby, said
he was excited when he first heard the school’s bid had been accepted and was now ready to travel to the capital next month. “The night before the announcement was made I was a little bit nervous but remained confident that we were good enough to perform at the Proms,” he said. “Over the past few months, we have been looking at community cohesion work, studying Razia Sultan and emperors and empresses. “The children performed a one hour play which also looked at the differences between good and bad, justice and injustice, through song and theatre. “It is this idea that will be taken to the Schools Prom and we are all now very excited to take this new type of music, and performance, to the prestigious event.” All children will wear costumes during the production whilst an interpretive dance is set to accompany the 650-strong choir. Rizwana Ahmed, deputy headteacher at Parkinson Lane, acknowledged the hard work undertaken by pupils and staff. “The staff of the school have really excelled themselves, the children rose to the occasion and

performed the play and song in a manner that made them stand out from the rest,” she said. “Having seen the children performing I know the audience of the Royal Albert Hall will not be disappointed.” Giving a further insight as to what the performance will entail, Mrs Akhtar Hussain added: “At intervals the chants are broken by individual performers that make your insides glow with pride.” An audience at the Victoria Theatre enjoyed a sneak preview of the performance in July, which was very well received whilst closer to home, a flashmob overtook the streets of Halifax with hundreds of youngsters showcasing their singing talents. The first evening of the Schools Proms will take place on Monday 10th November with 11 schools from Calderdale taking part in the event. The schools involved in the project are: All Saints CE (VA) J & I School, Holy Trinity P.S CE, Luddenden CE School, Mount Pellon Primary Academy, Parkinson Lane Community Primary School, St Augustine’s CE, St Mary’s Catholic PS, Warley Road PS, Halifax High, The Crossley Heath School and The North Halifax Grammar School.

Safer Communities Fund passes Half-Million milestone Organisations across West Yorkshire continue to benefit from a police community project which has so far resulted in dozens of groups receiving more than £500,000 in grant money. The West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner’s Safer Communities Fund is built up throughout the year by money seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA). These funds are then put into one collective ‘pot’ which is distributed out across the county to aid with local community safety initiatives. A total of £567,000 has so far been awarded since the first donations were made and last week, a further 35 groups and projects were successful in their bids. £154,984.03 was handed over at the third event at Thornhill Academy, Dewsbury, to support various initiatives. One UK registered charity which received a substantial sum was Leedsbased Karma Nirvana which supports victims and survivors of Forced Marriage and Honour Based Abuse. Project Manager at the charity, Anup Manota,
explained how the £5,250 donation will be used to help tackle the issues of Forced Marriage and Honour Based violence within local schools. “As part of a national initiative, supported by the Government’s Forced Marriage Unit, Karma Nirvana has recently appointed a Young Person Officer, Anna Kaur,” Mr Manota said. “Her role will be to engage with schools across the region and across the country with bespoke lesson plans, literature materials, a certificate of commitment to each school and safeguarding duties on referrals. “She will be providing talks in assemblies and classrooms to pupils, as well as presentations to teaching staff. “The project is to raise awareness across school pupils and make them aware of the services that are available to them, or their friends, who may be in danger.” During the latest round of fund allocation, 165 applications were made, totalling £885,892. West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson said he was ‘impressed’ by
POSITIVE: More than half a million pounds, seized from criminal activity, had been reinvested into the community through local safety initiatives
the number of causes applying for money, attempting to make the community a safer place. He added: “This money will allow these groups to help provide an invaluable service to our local communities as funding cuts continue to impact on charities and voluntary groups across West Yorkshire. “This is the third round of my Safer Communities Fund awards with a specific equality and diversity theme this time and a further total of £155,000 has now gone to these projects across West Yorkshire. “The sheer volume of applicants demonstrates just how crucial this fund is and I am pleased to be able to support such good causes to ensure our communities are safer and feel safer.” The fourth round of grants will open for applications on 3rd November with local organisations able to submit applications for a sum up to £7,500.

Tragic family death
Father murdered wife and daughters before killing himself
SCENE: Tributes to the family have been left outside their home on Blackberry Way, Clayton
Four members of the same family were found dead at their Bradford home earlier this week after the father murdered his wife and teenage children before hanging himself. The bodies of 49-year-old Jitendra Lad, along with his wife, Duksha Lad, 44, and their daughters, Trisha, 19, and Nisha, 16, were all found at their home on Blackberry Way, Clayton, shortly after 8.30pm on Monday. It is believed that they may have been in the home for ‘some time’ before a concerned neighbour made the discovery and detectives began a murder investigation. It has now been confirmed that Mr Lad murdered his family before hanging himself with any motive still yet unclear. West Yorkshire Police have also confirmed that they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths. Detective Superintendent Simon Atkinson said it is a distressing time for friends and family but ensured the shocked neighbourhood that a full investigation was underway. He said: “I have spoken to the family members this evening (wednesday) and updated them on the results of the post mortem examinations. “They are continuing to come to terms with what took place at Blackberry Way, which has robbed a family of two generations, and specially trained officers are supporting them at this very difficult time. “Enquiries are continuing into the circumstances leading to the incident and

we will not be drawn on speculation while our investigation is ongoing. “I would reiterate that we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths and neighbourhood officers have increased patrols in the area to offer reassurance to local people.” Superintendent Damien Miller, who leads neighbourhood policing across the Bradford District, added: “Clayton is a close-knit community and I understand that local people will be understandably upset by what has taken place and I would like to reassure people there is no wider danger to members of the public. “Additional neighbourhood officers are in the area speaking to people and offering reassurance.” Flowers and tributes have been laid outside the family home whilst the investigation continues with the community ‘stunned’ at what has happened. Mr and Mrs Lad had been married for 23 years and both worked for Bradford Council in the benefits and revenue department and administration. Youngest daughter, Nisha, was studying her A-Levels at Thornton Grammar School and Trisha was in the second year of a biochemistry degree at the University of Leeds. Chris Sampson, Nisha’s head teacher, released a statement on behalf of the school to pass on their condolences. He said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by these tragic deaths. Our thoughts are with the family’s relatives and friends. We will be helping the police with their inquiry in any way we can.” Meanwhile, a University of Leeds spokesperson added: “This is dreadful and shocking news and our thoughts are with Trisha's friends and loved ones. Staff are working with the university's counselling and chaplaincy services to help students who are affected by this tragedy and we will do all we can to support them.”

AWARDED: Mumtaz Begum, and her daughter Nasreen Akhtar, attended the FosterTalk Foster Care awards last week where Mumtaz was recognised for her commitment to caring for children
Fantastic Foster carer
Loving grandmother keeps children smiling for 25 years A caring grandmother from Keighley has been commended for her ‘amazing work’ with young people across Yorkshire after receiving a prestigious foster care award last week. Mumtaz Begum has been fostering children on a long and short term basis for the past 25 years, helping more than 30 children from oneday-old to 18 years of age. The mother-of-six, and g r a n d m o t h e r- o f - 1 2 , travelled to London to attend the FosterTalk Foster Carer awards ceremony on Wednesday 21st October, after being nominated for an achievement award by her daughter, Nasreen Akhtar. Explaining why she wanted to see her mother receive ‘the praise she so rightly deserves’, Nasreen explained: “Since she first came to the UK, my Mum has just loved working with kids. “She might be over 60 now but she is still going strong and is a fantastic role model, not only for the foster children but also her own children as well.
“All my brothers and sisters, we are all grown up now and have our education and careers. None of this would have been possible without our mum who is a massive inspiration to all the children she has helped in her life.” Despite not speaking English as a first language, Mumtaz continues to foster children with Bradford Council and keeps in contact with many of those who pass through the family home. Nasreen continued: “The
language barrier has never stopped her from giving the utmost care to all the children, whether it has been with some extra help from the family or interpreters. “Communication does not get in her way because she gives much more important things, such as love and care, to every single child. “She has witnessed children turn their lives around, and the difference in some of these kids when they arrive and leave the home, are just amazing.” Cllr Ralph Berry, the Council's portfolio holder for children's services, added that the award was a ‘great recognition’ for Mumtaz which highlighted the dedication she has towards foster care. FosterTalk is an independent, not-for-profit organisation focused on, and dedicated to supporting, Foster Carers, successfully delivering high quality support services across the UK for the past 10 years.

One Vision I n a previous article, we looked at the case of Specsavers –v- Asda which concerned a marketing campaign by Asda to promote its in-store optician services. Asda used various marketing materials in their stores and on their website which included the taglines “Be a real spec saver at Asda” and “Spec saving at Asda”. Asda had also used a logo mark of two non-intersecting ovals similar to the overlapping ellipses used by Specsavers (“the wordless mark”). Specsavers issued proceedings in the High Court for trade mark infringement and passing off. The Court of Appeal found that the use of both straplines amounted to an infringement and was unfair. The Court of Appeal sought guidance from the Court of Justice of the European Union which found that the use of a composite mark (a word mark superimposed over a logo mark) is capable of amounting to genuine use of a trade mark, provided that the use of the composite mark does not alter the distinctive character of the logo as registered. The case was then returned to the Court of Appeal for an application of the guidance provided by the European Court to the specific facts in question. Whilst the infringement proceedings were concluded on terms confidential to the parties, the Court allowed Specsavers’ appeal relating to its trade mark. Accordingly, the wordless mark was not to be revoked for non-use. The Judge indicated initially that Specsavers’ argument did not appear very convincing on the basis that the
addition of the word ‘Specsavers’ was a highly distinctive and prominent delineating element when compared to the wordless mark. However, the Judge was persuaded by the following factors:• Specsavers had made very extensive use of the logo for a long period of time. In 2009 alone they had spent £45million on advertising • None of their competitors have a logo even vaguely similar • There was evidence that ASDA had deliberately adopted a logo similar to that of Specsavers. Therefore, it was reasonable to assume that ASDA were well aware that consumers would identify the overlapping ovals as denoting Specsavers, even without the addition of the word. The wordless mark had itself been seen as a trade mark and not just as background. This all amounted to unusually convincing evidence of genuine use. The Court dismissed the concern expressed by the Trade Marks Registrar (who had been permitted to intervene in the appeal) that allowing the appeal would result in many applications to register relatively commonplace outline shapes of logo marks. The Court were of the view that each case would be decided on its own facts but did note that this was an unusual case and it was generally unlikely that the background of a mark would be perceived as an indication of origin. Making the road your catwalk W
ith more than £50million worth of car sales passing through their hands last year, it is no surprise that Smart Vehicle Options is quickly becoming a national leader in the vehicle leasing industry. Providing motors to businesses and individual clients alike, the Bradford-born business has quickly established itself as the most competitive leasing company across the nation. Thousands of satisfied customers, from London up to Scotland, take advantage of some amazing deals which have to be seen to be believed. Starting from less than £40 a month, it has never been easier to get behind the wheel of a brand new car and take to the streets in your new motor. Smart Vehicle Options is the realisation of a ‘dream come true’ for entrepreneurs, Amir Khan Hussain and Anjam Mahmood, who have always been self-confessed carenthusiasts. Coming from a successful property investment background, Mr Hussain saw a gap in the car leasing market and made it his mission to provide brand new motors at a fraction of the cost of his competitors. Over the last five years, the business has seen substantial growth, setting up new offices in London and Manchester, whilst two more sites are planned for opening in the future in Midlands and Scotland.
Specialists in contract hire and leasing “Whether your requirements are Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen or BMW, Smart Vehicle Options deal directly with the manufacturers and have over 50 different finance houses on board,” Mr Hussain said. “We have literally had people call us to ask if our deals are actually real because of the huge discounted rates we offer. “Take the new Citroen C1 for example. Not only do we have an amazing offer at the moment, but you cannot find our prices anywhere else. “For just £37.42 a month plus VAT, and an initial downpayment of £1,000 plus VAT, you could be driving away with a brand new car for the next 18 months.” Businesses are able to take advantage of a range of services including fleet management, which sees Team SVO handle all your company’s transportation needs if requested. There are also huge tax and VAT benefits that are bound to enhance any company’s financial position. An array of vans, as well as pick-up trucks, combi-motors, and even refrigerated vehicles can be leased on contracts between 18-months and 48months. SME’s across the country have already begun benefiting from the cheapest contract hire and leasing company around, and
now Mr Hussain says he wants to bring the business back to its roots in Bradford. “The past five years have been fantastic, in that we have grown so much,” he explained. “However, what seems to have happened is that Bradford has been overlooked. “We have clients from the city but there are so many more small to medium sized companies who could benefit so much from our services. “Whether clients just want a quick quote from our website or
request a certain fleet of vehicles directly, I guarantee we can arrange something at the cheapest price possible.” Online, the Smart Vehicle Options presence is huge, with its easy-to-use interface only matched by vehicle-giants AutoTrader. The super-fast site showcases

Aid worker beheading ‘backfired on IS’ RE-UPHOLSTERY
SPECIALISTS
ALAN HENING: The British aid worker's murder has 'turned the tide' against Isil by deterring would-be jihadis from fighting in Syria and Iraq
The murder of aid worker Alan Henning ‘shifted Muslim opinion wholesale’ against his Islamic State (IS) killers, according to a Home Office anti-radicalisation worker. Sulaimaan Samuel, a national safeguarding mentor for Channel, the Home Office's scheme to prevent adults and children becoming involved in terrorism, said the orchestrated killing of the Salford taxi driver had ‘backfired’ on the extremists. The 47-year-old was beheaded by Islamic State militants in a video released on social media after he was captured in December while delivering food and supplies to Syrian refugees.
Mr Samuel said: “The announcement that they were going to execute him, kill him this really did shift public opinion and it shifted Muslim opinion wholesale. “I would personally say to Alan Henning's family: do not think his death has been some type of waste because it hasn't, because his death at the hands of IS is the very thing that has caused the Muslim community to realise that what IS stands for is wrong and can never be condoned. “In Alan's death he has managed to save thousands of lives now and in the future of people who might potentially have been drawn into going out.
He will be saving lives in the future. “What IS has done has backfired.” Mr Samuel added that the greatest threat from radicalisation now came from online content, and those travelling to a foreign country or being influenced by a single preacher happened ‘much more rarely’. Fellow Briton David Haines was also executed by IS militants, following the murders of US journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley, while another Briton, journalist John Cantlie, remains in the hands of the terrorist group, also known as Isis.
Britain to send more support in fight against IS Britain will boost the number of its army trainers in Iraq in the coming weeks to support the nation’s armed forces' battle against Islamic State militants, the British defence secretary said on a visit to Baghdad on Wednesday. Britain said last month it had deployed a team of trainers to Iraq
to help Kurdish peshmerga fighters maintain and use heavy machineguns against the radical militants who have taken over much of Iraq and Syria in a ruthless military onslaught. Britain planes have also participated in U.S.-led air strikes against Islamic State, which has
beheaded two British aid workers and two U.S. journalists. Defence Secretary Michael Fallon, who met top Iraqi government officials during his visit to Baghdad, said the details of the mission would be ironed out soon.

‘I want an Asian at Number 10’ Prime Minister wants more British-Asians in ‘positions of power’
PRAISED: Culture Secretary, Sajid Javid, was highly commended by the nation’s leader as he was named as the most influential Asian in the UK
LEADER: David Cameron said he wants to see a British-Asian name following the title of Prime Minister in the future
Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron has spoke of his hopes to one day see a British-Asian take on the country’s highest political role - but not before he has finished his tenure. Speaking at the annual GG2 Leadership awards on Wednesday, Cameron said the lack of ethnic minorities in positions of power across several industries is still not enough, and he would back an Asian prime minister in the future. “One day, I want to hear that title Prime Minister followed by a British-Asian name,” he said. “Just not immediately, if that's ok,” he added on a lighter note in reference to the upcoming general election in Britain in May 2015. “If you're not engaged with our cultural life, you're not engaged with our national life. And in 2014, too many Britons are culturally disfranchised. “What makes Britain a success is that every community has a hand in it ... but frankly it is still not enough. In Britain today there are still too few people from ethnic minorities in top positions. “The absence is glaring in boardrooms, chambers of Houses of Parliament, on football manager's benches, on high court judges benches and in our fighter jets and naval ships. “And, I am clear, this has to change.” During his speech, Cameron also highly commended culture secretary, Sajid Javid, who has been widely tipped as Cameron’s successor when he steps down from the head of the Conservative party. Javid was named top of a Power List for the most influential Asians in Britain today and received special praise from the Tory leader, saying he was ‘incredibly proud’ of Mr Javid, ‘the brilliant Asian man who I asked to join the Cabinet’. Adding: “Doesn't it say something that in two generations you can go from coming to our country with so little to sitting around the Cabinet table? “That is the sort of country we are building in the United Kingdom.” Cameron was attending the GG2 Leadership Awards to present the Man and Woman of the Year accolades for 2014. The Man of the Year award went to Indian-origin businessman Rami Ranger, CEO of Sun Mark Limited, who was described as a ‘brilliant entrepreneur’ by the PM for his contribution to the British economy. Woman of the Year was named as Dame Asha Khemka, principal of West Nottinghamshire College, for her work in the field of education. “I am truly humbled by this award. I often say, India made me and Britain enabled me. My heart lies in India and my soul in Britain,” she said in her acceptance speech.

‘Respect each other’
Prince Charles urged religious leaders to encourage followers to respect those of other faiths earlier this week, drawing on the current persecution of Christians in the Middle East as an example where that respect is lacking. The Prince spoke in a video aired on Tuesday to accompany a report by the Catholic charity, ‘Aid to the Church in Need’. “It is an indescribable tragedy that Christianity is now under such threat in the Middle East,” he said. Islamic State fighters drove Christians from Iraq's northern city of Mosul in July, ending a presence stretching back to the early years of Christianity. The Sunni Islamist group has also targeted Shi'ite Muslims and religious minorities, executing hundreds of captives in Iraq and neighbouring Syria. Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, said religious leaders should be vocal and different faith groups should work together. “Rather than remaining silent, faith leaders have, it seems to me, a responsibility to ensure that people within their own tradition respect people from other faith traditions,” he said.

Dan Jarvis MP, Labour’s lead on the First World War centenary, has said the memory of those fallen soldiers from all areas of the world must not be forgotten. On the 100th anniversary of the first ever Victoria Cross being awarded to a soldier from the Indian Army, Sepoy Khudadad Khan, Mr Jarvis has retold the story of the soldier who will be remembered this weekend. “One hundred years ago today, on 31st October 1914, Sepoy Khudadad Khan became the first Indian soldier to receive the Victoria Cross, this country’s highest award for courage on the battlefield,” he said. “Serving as a machine gunner with the 129th Baluchis, Khan’s regiment supported the British Expeditionary Force in defending vital ports in France and Belgium during the early months of the
First Muslim Victoria Cross recipient’s story must be kept alive First World War. “Despite being badly wounded and massively outnumbered, he singlehandedly held off the German forces long enough for reinforcements to arrive and stop them advancing. He was the only member of his team to survive. “In this important year of remembrance, the story of Sepoy Khudadad Khan shows why we must never forget the heroic contribution of millions of men from across the Commonwealth who weren’t born in Britain but who united to fight in the name of
a common cause. “More than one million Hindu, Muslim and Sikh soldiers came from the Indian subcontinent alone. “Khan was the first of 175 servicemen from overseas who would be awarded the Victoria Cross for their courage and gallantry during the First World War. “As we pay tribute in the coming days to those who served and sacrificed for us on the frontline, we must never allow them to be forgotten.”

British Banker murder charge A 29-year-old British banker appeared in a Hong Kong court on Monday charged with two counts of murder after police found the bodies of two women in his apartment - including one inside a suitcase. Looking stony-faced and unshaven and wearing a black T-shirt and dark-rimmed glasses, Jutting, who is believed to have worked for
the Bank of America, told the court he understood both charges. The brief hearing was adjourned until 10th November, without Jutting entering a plea. Jutting was arrested in the early hours of Saturday at his apartment in Wan Chai, a central city district known for its vibrant night life. The charge sheet identified the woman in the suitcase as
Sumarti Ningsih and said she had been killed on 27th October. The second woman, who was not identified, was killed on 1st November, the document said, yet did not specify how they were killed. Local media described the two victims as prostitutes and said both had neck injuries, adding one was nearly decapitated.
Pensions on the rise
Private pensions enjoy new lease of life among British Indian workers The decade-long decline in the number of British Indian workers who pay into a workplace pension is finally ending. New figures show more than 49 per cent of British Indians who work in the private sector are now paying into a pension, up from the previous year’s figure of 46 per cent. The figures also show 41 per cent of Britain’s Pakistani and Bangladeshi community now pay into a private workplace pension. It follows the introduction of automatic enrolment, a cornerstone of pension reform, which ensures every firm in the country enrols their staff into a pension. Britain’s salesmen, bar tenders and hotel staff are at the forefront of this revolution, with their rates of saving outstripping those of other sectors. Sales and customer service occupations have seen a leap in participation of 15 percentage points, from 27 per cent to 42 per cent, while those working in the distribution, hotels and restaurants industry have seen a climb from 27 per cent to 36 per cent. Other parts of the economy seeing a big jump in savings include energy and water, where the number of staff participating in a scheme has risen from 64 per cent to 74 per cent. Minister for Pensions Steve Webb said: “Automatic enrolment is transforming the way the workers see
LEADING: Steve Webb, Minister for Pensions, said the government is attempting to ‘transform the way workers see pensions’
pension saving and, as these figures show, we’re seeing the change we need across the whole economy. “This is another example of action by this Government, which is creating a fairer society. We still have some way to go until we’ve completely put right the years of decline in our pension system, but we’re making very strong and steady progress.” Automatic enrolment is being introduced in a phased approach, with every
employer in the country due to offer eligible staff a workplace pension by 2018, regardless of how many people they employ. This means that over the next four years, the number of pension savers across all industry sectors is expected to climb further, giving people across society the chance of a more comfortable retirement. To date, approximately 4.7million people have been automatically enrolled.
“This is another example of action by this Government, which is creating a fairer society. We still have some way to go until we’ve completely put right the years of decline in our pension system, but we’re making very strong and steady progress.”

Miliband rumours ‘nonsense’
Ed Miliband, the leader Britain’s Labour party, described media reports that members of his own party were conspiring to oust him as ‘nonsense’ on Thursday, as he sought to keep his bid to become prime minister on track. Labour have a narrow lead over Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservatives in opinion polls ahead of a national election in May 2015. But Miliband's personal rating has sunk to its lowest ever level, raising doubts among supporters that he is capable of delivering an outright win. Newspaper reports said unnamed members of Miliband's team feared that MPs in his own party were circulating a letter calling for him to resign for the good of the party. The BBC reported two MPs had signed such a letter. “Honestly this is nonsense,” Miliband told BBC TV. “I don't accept that this matter arises, what I believe the party wants to focus on is the country.” Asian

Two jailed after high-speed motorway drugs chase A pair of criminals from Birmingham have been jailed for six years after being arrested following a police pursuit on the motorway, in which they flung more than £200,000 worth of heroin from their car whilst dodging traffic. On the evening of Monday 7th July, officers from the Central Motorway Police Group tried to stop a grey Mazda 6 near Junction 14 of the M6, as part of a pre-planned drugs operation. But behind the wheel of the car was 31-year-old Paul Duckworth who he had no intention of stopping for anyone, swerving between cars in the evening traffic at speeds of 120 mph. In the passenger seat was Mohamed Kabbar, 25, and as the car was pursued by officers, he threw two packages out of his window on the stretch of the M6 motorway, close to Chasewater, Cannock. Officers, now joined by the police helicopter, attempted to stop the Mazda on numerous occasions, even pulling in front of it and displaying an illuminated message in the back of their car which said ‘FOLLOW ME’.
After a 28minute pursuit, the officers took the initiative at the safest possible moment to bring the vehicle to a stop by boxing it in and maneuvreing it off the carriageway. Examination of the section of motorway where items had been seen thrown from the car revealed two large packages of heroin on the hard shoulder with a potential street value of around £230,000. Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy A police officer in Pakistan hacked a man to death for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, just two days after a Christian couple was lynched over blasphemy in the same province. The man, Tufail Haider, 55, was taken into custody late on Wednesday 5th November in the city of Gujrat after a group of people allegedly overheard him making the remarks, beat him up and handed over to police. According to reports, police officer Faraz Naveed arrested Haider and sent him to the lockcontinued his up. Haider derogatory rantings, despite warnings from various officials, claimed another police officer BLASPHEMY: Pakistan's minorities feel that the state fails to protect them, and even tolerates violence against them
Khurram Shehzad. At around 5.00 a.m., Officer Naveed could not control his emotions and went into Haider’s cell with an axe, and hit Haider's throat several times." Haider died on the spot, police said. Blasphemy is a serious offence in conservative Muslim Pakistan those accused are where sometimes lynched on the spot. On 4th November, in another part of Punjab province, a mob beat a Christian married couple to death and burned their bodies in a brick kiln for allegedly desecrating a Quran. Blasphemy charges, even when they do go to court, are punishable by death in Muslim-majority Pakistan. They are hard to fight
because the law does not define clearly what is blasphemous. Even presenting the evidence in court can sometimes itself be considered a fresh infringement. Pakistan's minorities feel that the state fails to protect them, and even tolerates violence against them. Last month, a British man with a history of mental health illness, sentenced to death for blasphemy this year, was shot and wounded by a prison guard in his cell. Also in October, a Pakistani court upheld the death penalty against a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, who is also accused of blasphemy, in a case that drew global headlines after two prominent politicians who tried to help her were assassinated.

“The budget of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia depends 90 per cent on oil - I’ve already said that this is a huge mistake.” By Tanya Shah tanya@asianexpress.co.uk
Saudi Arabia should set up a sovereign wealth fund to protect itself from sliding oil prices by earning higher returns from its foreign reserves, Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal has said. Brent crude oil futures sank more than $2 a barrel on 4th November to a four-year low of $82.32, a day after Saudi Arabia cut its official selling prices to the United States. Prince Alwaleed publicly urged the government last month to do more to protect the economy of the world’s top oil exporter from the slide, and he recommended that officials put most of the kingdom’s official savings in a new fund. “The budget of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia depends 90 percent on oil - I’ve already said that this is a huge mistake,” said the prince, who is one of the kingdom’s most prominent businessmen and international investors. “And I have said before that if the situation remains the same then we could face a deficit in 2015 and have to use the reserves, which is something unfavourable.” Saudi Arabia should therefore set up a sovereign
Sri Lanka to investigate sex bribe claims in women's cricket team
Sri Lanka's sports minister has ordered an investigation into sex bribe claims involving the national women's cricket team, an official has said. Mahindananda Aluthgamage asked an independent panel to investigate local media allegations that unidentified players were dropped from the team for refusing to have sex with sports officials, his spokesman said. "The minister wants to clear the air by getting this report investigated," spokesman Harsha Abeykoon announced. "We want to get to the bottom of it because this is bad for the image of the game and the country." The investigation would be conducted "even though no names have been mentioned in the report and there is no complaint to us or the police", he said. A three-member panel headed by a retired woman judge was likely to be named in coming

CAUTIOUS: Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal has called for officials put most of the kingdom’s official savings in a new fund
Saudi Prince calls for back up plan as oil prices slide fund similar to those of Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Singapore and Norway that could earn 5 or 10 per cent a year, Prince Alwaleed told reporters. The annual earnings of the fund would cover a large part of the budget deficits which the government may now run because of cheaper oil, he said. The International Monetary Fund has estimated Saudi Arabia would need an average oil price of $91 a barrel in 2015 to balance its state budget. “What I’m asking for now in this open forum is to have an active sovereign wealth fund, and to put in it all the excess foreign exchange that you have, all the money you have...” Prince Alwaleed said. “Clearly the income from our sovereign wealth fund
days after their agreement to serve as investigators was secured, Abeykoon said. The privately-run Sinhalese-language Divaina newspaper, quoting sources, had reported last month that unidentified selection and team officials sought sexual favours from players in return for securing them a place in the side. Sri Lanka Cricket, the sport's governing body in the cricket-mad island, said it would conduct its own internal investigation but stressed that neither players or officials had complained of wrongdoing. "The players had a contractual obligation to speak to us first if there was any issue," its chief executive Ashley de Silva has commented. "No one has done that, but we are getting an outside lawyer to go into the newspaper report," he said, adding that the findings would be shared with the independent panel.
would not cover all our budget, but at least should cover a good size of it.”The Saudi central bank has built up immense foreign reserves over the past several years of high oil prices; net foreign assets totalled 2.76 trillion riyals (459.98 billion British pounds) in September, up 6 per cent from a year earlier. Economists believe the government could draw down the reserves to keep spending at high levels for many years if necessary, and its low debt means it could easily borrow from the markets. So Saudi Arabia does not face any immediate crisis due to the oil price slide. But the remarks by Prince Alwaleed, who does not have high-level responsibility for
economic policymaking in the kingdom, appear to reflect concern among some Saudis about the impact of any longterm decline in oil. In contrast to its Gulf neighbours, Saudi Arabia does not invest its oil surpluses aggressively in foreign markets; the Saudi central bank is believed to have placed over half of its foreign reserves in low-risk, lowreturn U.S. dollar assets such as U.S. Treasury bonds and bank accounts. In June this year, the country's influential Shura council advisory body discussed a proposal to establish a sovereign wealth fund, but no decision was reached. Prince Alwaleed, owner of international investment firm Kingdom Holding was visiting Jeddah to view one of the fruits of Saudi Arabia's oilfuelled economic boom - his Kingdom Tower project. The tower, now under construction, is projected to cost 4.6 billion riyals and be the world's tallest skyscraper at over 1,000 metres (3,280 feet). It is scheduled to be completed in 2018, featuring 170 stories that will include offices, luxury apartments and a five-star Four Seasons Hotel with 200 rooms.
Rumblings of dissent are growing against the Gandhi family that leads India's hapless Congress party, five months after the most resounding electoral defeat in the party's 129-year history. The Gandhis' troubles are assisting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he seeks to further his agenda of economic and social reform. Disgruntled Congress members pasted newspaper over portraits of the mother-son team of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi at a party office in Tamil Nadu on 3rd November, after a party veteran shunned their leadership and formed his own splinter group. G.K. Vasan, a former minister, was the latest in a series of regional leaders to quit the party, which was pushed out of office in May, clinging to just 44 of 543 seats in parliament. Vasan's departure triggered more criticism of the Gandhis and their perceived lack of introspection. Karti Chidambaram, the son of previous finance minister, said the Congress leadership should give state chapters of the party more freedom. Congress faced further embarrassment at the weekend when Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law
Robert Vadra, shoved away the microphone of a journalist who asked him about allegations he profited from sweetheart land deals. Vadra was pilloried for his responses of "Are you serious?" and "Are you nuts?" which became Twitter sensations. Analysts said the incident was a reminder of the stand-offish attitudes that led many people to reject the party in May. Modi has repeatedly promised a "Congressfree India" to end the domination of a party that has ruled India for most of the 67 years since freedom from British rule. He blames the NehruGandhi dynasty that began with Rahul's greatgrandfather Jawaharlal Nehru for the country's slow development. Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party took control of two economically important states from Congress in regional elections last month, and is expected to deal the party further pain in another group of state polls that end in December. Modi's adept use of technology was widely credited with helping him win the support of millions of young Indians. Congress has taken to Twitter and Facebook more actively since the election but still has a long way to go.

Bangladesh may hang a senior Jamaat-iIslami (JI) leader as early as next week after the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence for war crimes, the law minister said Thursday. Mohammad Kamaruzzaman would be the second senior JI leader to hang for crimes committed during the 1971 war that resulted in secession of the former East Pakistan. Law minister Anisul Haq said he could be hanged as early as next week unless he sought a presidential pardon. The 62-year-old assistant secretary general of JI — Bangladesh's largest religious party — has seven days to petition the president for clemency, Haq said. “On the expiry of seven days, if he does not apply for clemency ... the sentence passed by
the highest court of the country can be executed,” he said. Kamaruzzaman was found guilty in May 2013 of mass murder, torture and abductions. The Supreme Court on Monday rejected his appeal, triggering violent clashes between police and JI protesters, who set off improvised bombs, torched cars and pelted police with rocks. In the last week Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal, a domestic court, has sentenced JI's supreme leader and key financier to death. Rights groups say the trials have fallen short of international standards. The government maintains they are needed to heal the wounds of the conflict, which it says left three million people dead.
India offers six bulletproof cars for summit SECURITY: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have six bullet-proof cars for his use during the summit in Kathmandu
The Indian government has agreed to provide six armoured BMW cars to be used during the upcoming 18th Saarc Summit without levelling a charge and an agreement to this effect was signed in New Delhi on 5th November. A further thirty-two nonarmoured BMW and Mercedes Benz cars will be hired from India for the summit. Khaganath Adhikari, senior joint secretary and spokesperson of Nepal's foreign ministry, is in New Delhi to settle the negotiations with Indian officials. The vehicles will ply in Kathmandu for 11 days during the summit which begins on 22nd November and concludes on 27th November. India's external affairs ministry has coordinated these high-end and medium range vehicles from various Indian firms. Nepal has to pay over Nepali Rs.13.5 million ($136,160) as rent for the 32 medium range vehicles for 11 days, said eKantipur quoting Adhikari. These high-end bullet proof cars will be used by
heads of the state/government. Additionally, Nepal has to pay the insurance premium for their drivers. Initially, Nepal had decided to buy or hire eight high-end bulletproof cars for the summit but due to time constraints, Nepal could not buy them on time. Later, the Indian government came forward for assistance following which Nepal decided to take India's help, said a senior Nepal government official. During his Nepal visit in the first week of August, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also told his Nepali counterpart Sushil Koirala to seek any help needed for the summit. "Modi is coming with two bullet-proof cars and the Nepal prime minister has his own. But there was a shortage of six bullet-proof cars which the Indian side is going to provide," said the official. The visiting heads of state or government will
travel in these bullet-proof cars while the rest of the 32 medium-range cars will be used for foreign ministers, representatives from the nine observer nations, spouses of the heads of state or government and other visiting ministers. On 25th November through Janakpur, a revered Hindu shrine and famous for its Ram-Sita temple. An advance Indian team consisting of security personnel and PMO officials recently visited Kathmandu and inspected the summit venue, the VIP lounge at Tribhuvan International Airport and other venues which Modi will be visiting including Lumbini, Janakpur and Muktinath.

India officials fear al Qaeda grooming of Indian militants Decrypted communications between Indian Mujahideen (IM) and al Qaeda and testimony from suspects have triggered alarm among intelligence officials in New Delhi. The groups appear to be working together to launch major attacks in the region. The officials said that plots they had uncovered included the kidnapping of foreigners and turning India into a ‘Syria and Iraq where violence is continuously happening’. Allegiances between Islamist militant groups can be murky and fleeting, and providing concrete proof of operational ties is notoriously difficult. But Indian security agencies said evidence they had gathered pointed to growing ties between al Qaeda and IM, a home-grown movement hitherto known for low-level attacks on local targets using relatively crude weapons like pressure cooker bombs. Weeks after al Qaeda announced the formation of a South Asia wing to strike across the subcontinent, agencies said they had discovered IM members were training with al

That increases the risk of a more dangerous form of militancy in the world's biggest democracy, which has been largely spared the kind of violence that regularly rocks its neighbour Pakistan and, beyond it, Afghanistan. Security officials cite last Sunday's deadly suicide bombing on the Pakistani side of a border crossing with India, and a terror alert on Tuesday 4th November at two eastern ports that forced the Indian navy to withdraw two ships, as evidence that militant coordination and activity are on the rise. Officials at India’s main counterterrorism unit say they are investigating how al Qaeda/ISIS tie up with local groups, especially as the drawdown takes place in Afghanistan. Shah Rukh Khan’s birthday celebrations Shah Rukh Khan's birthday party was one of a kind. He is King Khan after all, so naturally everything for his 49th was ‘king size’ at this event. Biggies from Bollywood were present at the event and everybody was seen making merry including Khan. The party was lavishly organised by Gauri Khan and had Bachchans, Roshans and others on the guest list. The party began at 10pm and continued till early next morning. Reportedly, since both Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan were present at the event, they broke into ‘Dola Re Dola’ dance. Hrithik Roshan
reproduced his signature moves from ‘Kaho... Naa Pyaar Hai’ and mesmerised everyone. Sonu Sood and Abhishek Bachchan danced on ‘Happy New Year’ songs especially ‘Nonsense Ki Night’ and ‘Sharabi’. All of them had a gala time at the event and everyone was breaking into jigs. Well, after spending the afternoon with media and fans by cutting cakes and unwrapping gifts, this was a good way of letting his hair down. Others who were invited to the event were, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya, Karan Johar, Vivaan Shah, Farah Khan, Boman Irani, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Varun Dhawan, Malaika Arora Khan and Shilpa Shetty.

Ayesha Takia Azmi gives chicks a clucking chance
Since her award-winning debut in ‘Taarzan: The Wonder Car’, it was clear that Ayesha Takia Azmi would be one to watch. She blew audiences and critics away in the thriller Wanted, and now India's sweetheart is starring in a role that is true to life for her: that of an animal advocate. Just in time for World Vegan Day on 1st November, Takia Azmi flashes her lovely smile in a new PETA India ad, that lets everyone know that "vegans make chicks happy!" Her co-star is one of the few "chicks" whose sweet face can hold her own next to Takia Azmi: a fluffy baby chick.
Celebrated photographer Gaurav Sawn shot the ad, and talented artist Satyam Kadu did her hair and make-up. Takia Azmi also sat down with PETA India for an exclusive video interview. On set, Takia Azmi talked about how her respect for animals made her go vegan. "It's beyond traumatic to hear the things that the animals go through when they are obviously slaughtered, the way they are kept, the way they are treated", she said. She thinks it is inexcusable that chickens' throats are slashed and they are dunked into scalding-hot featherremoval tanks, often while they are still
conscious. She is proud that she helps end cruelty to animals every time she sits down to eat. "Being vegan is something that has changed my life tremendously", she said. Takia Azmi joins a long list of actors, athletes and other celebrities – including Lara Dutta, Shahid Kapoor, Esha Gupta, Sonu Sood, Richa Chadda, Pankaj Advani, Anil Kumble, Hema Malini, VVS Laxman, Amrita Rao, R Madhavan, Kartik Murali, Rahul Sharma and Monica Dogra – who have starred in pro-vegetarian ads for PETA India.

Jay Sean walks away from American record label and returns to the UK for a new era
Ranbir Kapoor joins Tag Heuer
More than a decade and 15 million singles sold later, the five times platinum selling artist Jay Sean is a household name, performing sold out shows across the globe and now he's back in the UK. Sean, the UK’s most successful R&B export has announced that he has chosen to part ways with American record label - Cash Money Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. He’s now preparing to release his latest body of work ‘The Mistress II’ independently next month, in line with his long awaited return home to the UK. The departure comes six years after Sean signed to the label, where he released two albums, ‘All or Nothing’, in 2009, featuring the Billboard number 1 and number 9 hits ‘Down’ and ‘Do You Remember’, followed in 2013 with ‘Neon’, which spawned the R&B song ‘Mars’, which went to number 23 on the Rhythmic radio charts. Sean admits that whilst the departure from the USA is amicable, there were artistic differences that lead to his decision: “I had and still maintain a great relationship with (Cash Money CEOs) Slim and Baby. “They believed in me and my talent and our partnership obviously garnered a lot of pop success. But, it got to the point where I was chasing pop success and 'the smash' when really my heart wasn't in it anymore," he says. "That's not why I got into this game." Moving forward independently, and returning to his true R&B roots, Jay Sean is now set to release his new mixtape, ‘The Mistress II’, with the video to the first single ‘Tears in the Ocean’. For Sean, The Mistress II is a return to his musical roots and the original UK urban R&B vibe that made him an urban legend. Closer in spirit and sound to his earlier albums Me Against Myself and My Own Way, Sean’s new singles Tears In The Ocean, Jameson and All I Wanna Do carry his trademark, instantly recognisable, nostalgic R&B style. For Sean, ‘The Mistress II’ was a labour of love:
“This is a passion project for me, it’s the kind of music I love to listen to and make. The mixtape is all original production and the songs are brand new,” comments Sean. “My goal was to create a complete, solid body of work for The Mistress II, it’s definitely not a collection of catchy singles meant to grab your attention in the first five seconds. “I want people to listen to it in its entirety, I’m trying to get back to where people lived with music and let music grow on them and fall in love with a whole album.” Sean returns to the UK in the first week of November to reconnect with his fans and share this piece of work with them that he knows will have them reminiscing of good times but also give them music to make new memories with. “The UK fans are the ones that took me to the top and have stayed by my side throughout my journey. I wanted to take this opportunity to give a little something back. It feels good to be coming home with a body of music that I am really proud of and know they will love.” Sean still maintains close connections with his home town of Hounslow in west London and whilst in the UK will also be visiting his former high school as well as several universities across the country to participate in a series of master class Q&A sessions with fans and aspiring musicians. Having started his academic career at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith and then moving on to the prestigious Barts and the London School of Medicine, Sean made the brave decision to drop out of his course in Medicine and pursue his then promising career in music full time. The talks will not only reconnect Jay with a fan base he knows and understands well, but also give aspiring artists the opportunity to learn more about Jay's musical journey so far. Tears in the Ocean and the complete mixtape The Mistress II will be available as a free download shortly, more details to follow.
TAG Heuer, the world leader in prestigious and high-end chronographs, has just announced the signing of Bollywood Superstar Ranbir Kapoor for a long-term partnership as a Brand Ambassador. With this association, TAG Heuer reinforces its leadership position by becoming the only brand in the industry endorsed by two of the biggest names in Bollywood – Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor. The versatile actor and today’s youth icon, Ranbir Kapoor joins a renowned roster of international sports stars and celebrities that includes football superstar and two time winner of the Ballon d’Or award Cristiano Ronaldo, WTA tennis champion Maria Sharapova, Hollywood film actress Cameron Diaz, Bollywood Actor Shah Rukh Khan, Formula One World Champion Jenson Button, World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier and the entire crew of 2013 America’s Cup winner Oracle Team USA. The Swiss Avant-Garde watchmaker is best known for breaking rules: harnessing mental fortitude to overcome technology restraints and deliver ground breaking innovation. Their ‘Don’t crack under pressure’ campaign asserts the powerful truth that achievement is due as much to mental strength as to physical capabilities. A truth that is exhibited in the daring watches and chronographs produced by TAG Heuer. “Far more than a claim, it is a
powerful mindset,” said TAG Heuer CEO Stephane Linder. “Those who know TAG Heuer may recognize the motto, a tribute to an early 90’s campaign which for many remains the most archetypal expression of TAG Heuer’s unbreakable determination. “The campaign captures the mental strength of our Dream Team, athletes and partners, who reflect the values of the TAG Heuer shield. Be it Cristiano Ronaldo the perfectionist, Maria Sharapova the irresistible, Shah Rukh Khan the King of Bollywood or our latest ambassador Ranbir Kapoor. In India, we are proud to have two of the best names in Bollywood sporting TAG Heuer and we see a great future with them in the coming years.” “TAG Heuer has always been one of my dreams,” said Ranbir Kapoor. “It started when I was really young, it was the first watch I wanted to own in my life. I remember my parents gifted it to me on my 13th birthday. “So now, to be associated with the brand is really humbling for me. I really have to pinch myself to believe that I am part of the TAG Heuer family. “I think TAG Heuer stands for the four principle P’s that is prestige, precision, passion and performance. I think that is something we all and especially I can identify with; the way I look at my career, my life. I believe these are very important aspects for how one should approach their life, their work and their relationships.” Through his successful career in Bollywood films, Ranbir has become one of the most popular celebrities in India. He is the recipient of several awards and nominations, including five Filmfare Awards for his memorable performances in movies like ‘Rockstar’, ‘Barfi’, ‘Wake Up Sid’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and many more. Apart from winning accolades for his experimental style of acting, he has also been listed as the ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ in India and in 2013 he topped Filmfare's poll of the ‘Most Stylish Young Actor’ and was one of the recipients of ‘People of the Year’ award by the Limca Book of Records. In addition to acting in films, Ranbir is a football enthusiast and supports numerous charities and causes. He endorses the Spanish football club FC Barcelona and is the vicecaptain of the All Stars Football Club, a celebrity football club that raises money for charity. He is a co-owner of the Indian Super League football team ‘Mumbai City FC’, and is the cofounder of the production company ‘Picture Shuru Productions’.

The makers of The Shaukeens knew that getting Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Piyush Mishra with the dusky Lisa Haydon and having Akshay Kumar in a special appearance in their naughty comedy would evoke laughter from the audience. They apparently hosted a screening for youngsters between the ages of 18-22, handpicked from select colleges of Mumbai. Their idea was to get the youth's perspective and the reactions stumped everyone. The college kids found it to be one of the funniest films they had seen in a while, with girls finding the naughtiness shown in the movie 'cute, quirky and hilarious.' The focus group also enjoyed the soundtrack, with Honey Singh's Alcoholic and Manali Trance being their clear favourites. Director Abhishek Sharma, who was present at the screening, says, "Everyone has a naughty side, but we all know our limits. The film portrays just that." Crediting his actors for their performances, he adds, "Anupam, Annu and Piyush are three of the finest actors we have. They've unleashed their naughty side in this film. World debut of Ferrari 458 Speciale Aperta at Paris Motor Show
A special car Ferrari announced the 2014 Paris Motor Show world debut of the 458 Speciale A (A as in Aperta). The new limited edition special series is a celebration of the dazzling success of the various versions of the 458, a model that has collected an array of international motoring media awards and track victories, not least a double WEC title and category wins in classic endurance races, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Dedicated to just 499 Ferrari collectors, the 458 Speciale A is the most powerful spider in Prancing Horse history, effortlessly marrying extreme performance with the sublime pleasure of drop-top driving. Its aluminium retractable hard top, which takes a mere 14 seconds to deploy or retract, helps reduce the weight difference with the Speciale coupé to just 50 kg. The 458 Speciale A sports the most powerful naturally-aspirated road-going V8 engine ever built by Ferrari. It punches out a massive 605 cv (135 cv/l specific power output) and 540 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm yet only generates 275 g/km of CO2 emissions. The three international Best Performance Engine awards the V8 has won are acknowledged on a special plaque in the cockpit. The new car sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds and has a Fiorano lap time of 1’23”5. These superb results are thanks in great part to its front and rear active aerodynamics, the rigidity of a chassis that incorporates 10 aluminium alloys, and Side Slip Angle Control (SSC) which guarantees unparalleled sporty driving in all conditions, underscored by the seductively exhilarating signature Ferrari soundtrack.
As is the case with all Prancing Horse cars, the 458 Speciale A’s sculpted forms are absolutely performance-oriented. In fact, a series of innovative and original bodywork solutions has made the 458 Speciale A the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari spider ever. The 458 Speciale A is being premiered in a unique triple-layer yellow livery with a Blu Nart and Bianco Avus central stripe as well as fivespoke forged wheels in Grigio Corsa. The cockpit has a distinctive racing-inspired look: lightweight yet exclusive materials have been adopted throughout and, of course, crafted with Ferrari’s signature artisanal sophistication. This is particularly true of the finish of the dash, the moulded door panels and central tunnel in an exclusive blue carbon-fibre (also used for the treadplates) as well as the newlydesigned seats in Alcantara© with contrasting stitching and 3D technical fabric.

The new Supercharging site is accessible from the M8, M9, and A720. The Supercharger is in the car park off Almond Road, near the terminal. Model S drivers gain access to the car park 24 hours a day by pressing the button on the barrier and requesting Supercharger access. One hour free parking is complimentary whilst Supercharging. A Supercharger replenishes half a charge in about 20 minutes. Supercharger sites are strategically placed along welltravelled routes to allow Model S owners to drive long distances with minimal stops. They are located near amenities like motorway services, restaurants, cafes and shopping centres so drivers can stop for a quick meal and have their Model S charged by the time they’re done. Tesla has energised 221 Superchargers worldwide with eight in the UK, making it both the largest and the fastest-growing fast-charging network in the world. THE FUTURE: Tesla opens first Supercharger at Edinburgh Airport
Striking Detroit Electric reveals fastback design for its SP:01 production model
The final exterior design of Detroit Electric’s all-new, pure electric two-seater sports car, the SP:01, is revealed this week as the company gears up for production. The lightweight, limited-edition SP:01 will be the world’s fastest production electric sports car when it goes on sale in Asia, Europe and North America, starting in 2015. Revealed as a prototype at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, the design of SP:01 has been subtly updated to further improve the vehicle’s aerodynamic performance, ahead of the start of production at a new facility in the UK later this year. T h e

most striking element of the design is the bold new fastback configuration, which replaces the prototype’s flying buttresses on either side of the rear window. The exterior design has been optimised using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to provide enhanced airflow and reduce turbulence, for maximum performance and stability. A large sculptural rear wing and an under-body diffuser have been incorporated to reduce lift and improve downforce at higher speeds. The changes to the
production vehicle’s aerodynamics are intended to deliver improved on-thelimit road-holding and ensure rewarding and accessible dynamics. A host of aesthetic and functional enhancements to the exterior design accompany the aerodynamic enhancements. For example, the front air intake and outlet ducts on the bonnet have been reshaped to optimise airflow to the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system. The vehicle’s innovative battery packs have been clad in a protective composite casing which forms an integral part of the vehicle’s structure. This improves the SP:01’s torsional rigidity and provides an extremely robust barrier to protect the batteries from punctures in the event of an accident. The changes to SP:01’s design ensure that it will deliver on its promise to set new standards for performance and handling in the EV segment. Its high-power electric motor will propel the car to an impressive 155 mph (249 km/h) top speed and a 0-60mph time of just 3.7 seconds. Detroit Electric was revived in 2008 by Albert Lam, former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and Executive Director of Lotus Cars of England, with a vision to produce an electric vehicle that seamlessly integrates refined aesthetics, innovative technology and superior handling and performance.

Real-world fuel consumption figures exposed Car buyers should look to the VW Golf SV 2.0 TDI if they want a car capable of getting close to its official claimed MPG figure, according to the latest batch of ‘True MPG’ test results. The Volkswagen achieved more than 83% of its claimed fuel consumption of 58.9 MPG. The BMW 218d Active Tourer is the next most likely not to disappoint when it comes to fulfilling official figures in the real world, on 56.2mpg Since launching True MPG two years ago, almost 400 cars have been tested in real-world conditions, using cutting-edge test equipment, achieving economy figures that are an average of 19% lower than the Government figures. At the other end of the scale, the
Volvo V40 2.0 T5 R-Design was only capable of delivering 67.9% of its claimed 47.9 MPG – achieving a measly 32.5mpg. The official figures are achieved under laboratory conditions and can rarely be replicated in the real world. The True MPG data is scientifically calculated by experienced engineers, who drive test vehicles over a variety of real roads, including motorway, A and B roads and through towns and villages. Government-sanctioned MPG tests data is proving unreliable because the tests are carried out in a laboratory. But when it comes to buying a car, for most buyers considering fuel consumption is amongst the most important attributes of a car.

Haggle hard and you can save 31% on a BMW! A whopping huge discount of £18,650 for a BMW 7 Series was made by a mystery research field team. How and why – well that’s because it’s about to be replaced by a newer model, but a target price research reveals that it is just one of several double-digit discounts achievable on BMWs. As a result, the premium car manufacturer sits third among all car makers for the overall average discount available on its cars. Others significant BMW discounts include a £10,719 saving off a BMW 640d SE, which is available for £52,411 against a list price of £63,130, and a £2056 saving on a BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics, which can be bought for £26,719 despite a list price of £28,775. The biggest average discounts across a car maker's range are available on Volvos (14.7%), Renaults (13.6%) and BMWs (13.2%). Across all sectors and manufacturers, the average dealer discount stood at a 12-month high of 10.3%. Jim Holder of What Car?, who conducted the reasearch said: “For months now, we’ve been told that the increased new car sales volumes mean that discounts will disappear,
Target price insight reveals the most you should pay for certain new cars
BARGAIN: The biggest new car saving of £18,650 was negotiated by mystery shoppers and represents an enormous 31% saving off the car's list price
but the insight offered by our Target Price team shows that you can still get a healthy amount of money off if you are prepared to haggle. “BMW is, rightly, perceived as a quality brand, so it may surprise new car buyers that they can bag some of the brand’s most luxurious offerings for much less than the list price. The fact is that the 7 Series is due to be replaced soon, so there are incredible discounts available. Using Target Price means that you can be bold when you step into the dealership because you know what you can demand.” Discounts of cars in the luxury segment are particularly strong at the moment, with an average saving of 17% off the list price across the sector. This is an increase of 75% on the same time last year and is also largely down to BMW 7 Series discounts jumping from 9% to 29.3% on average. City cars, small family cars and coupés, where demand is stronger, have all experienced a dip in discounting but cars in the small SUV sector, which includes the BMW X1, Peugeot 3008 and Suzuki SX4, can be snapped up for an average of 8.4% less than the list price.

Bugatti’s sixth legend, the Ettore Bugatti, was on show in all its glory at the Paris Motor Show. Based on the historical model Type 41 Royale, it priced up at €2.35 million, it’s named after in honour of Mr Ettore Bugatti - founder and patron of the brand. The super sports car is powered by a 1,200 PS, 8litre W16 engine that transmits an unequalled 1,500 Nm at 3,000 to 5,000 rpm to the tarmac and rockets it from zero to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds. With a maximum speed of 408.84 km/h (254 MPH) with the roof down, it’s the world's fastest production roadster ever built. Oozing with aesthetically functional beauty the car is made using pure and natural materials such as polished aluminium and the finest cordovan leather. The design of the carbon body of the Legends model
Bugatti Veyron ‘Ettore Bugatti’ goes on show in Paris Ettore Bugatti is based on a 1932 Type 41 Royale with the chassis number 41111 and sports a "yin-yang" color split. The front part is made of hand-polished aluminium and finished with a clear coating. Bugatti is the only manufacturer to use clearcoated aluminium on a production vehicle. For the first time, this material is used for the entire front and side panels including the bonnet, the mirror bases and
housings, the exterior door handles and the corners of the bumpers, the wings, the doors and the regions just behind them, the so-called "medallions" (in French). The vehicle's rear, sill panels and A-pillar trims are finished with dark-blue exposed carbon. Based on one of the most famous wheel rim designs in automotive history, the polished, diamond-cut wheel rims were specially developed for this vehicle
and color-coordinated with a dark-blue finish. The distinctive Bugatti horseshoe and the EB logo at the rear shine out in platinum and underscore the gleaming exterior appearance of this Bugatti Legend. The signature of the company's founder Ettore Bugatti is engraved into the tank and oil cap and painted in silver. Bugatti is using two types of leather for the first time in the "Ettore Bugatti" Legend. Traditional calf's leather is used throughout the vehicle interior. Those parts that are typically touched by hand including the steering wheel rim, gear lever, door handles, centre console armrest and door handle recesses, the switches in the door trims and in the roof module are all jacketed in natural cordovan leather.

Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to
take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Monday and Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the
country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.
No handling Hamza Old Bacca Boys 1 – 1 Borussia Teeth With both sides looking to gain ground on top spot, Old Bacca Boys and Borussia Teeth faced off in a close encounter which either team could have won, yet neither eventually did. Both teams were coming into the game full of confidence following convincing displays last week, and it was Old Bacca Boys who had the best of the early chances. Arman Yasim eventually opened the scoring for the Boys with a comfortable finish, temporarily moving his side to within one point of top spot. However, when facing off against the league’s most lethal strike force, it is always going to be a challenge to keep a clean sheet, as Old Bacca Boys soon found out. Goal-machine Hamza Ismail was a constant threat throughout the game and finally found the back of the net, to claim his 14th of the season. The sides both had chances to win it late on yet as time ran out, it seemed the Bacca Boys and Borussia Teeth were happy to settle for the point. The point moves Old Bacca Boys to third spot, just three off the leading pack, whilst Borussia remain fifth, three points from their opponents. MOTM: Hamza Ismail has now bagged 14 goals in just 10 games and continues to lead the league’s scoring charts
Chasing pack fail to capitalise on dropped points whilst Monday league launches
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Old Bacca Boys may have lost the chance to move to within one point of top spot yet Suliman Khan still delivered a stand out performance to earn the individual accolade of Player of the Week. His side will have to step up their performance next week if they are to triumph over an Al Aqs side who will be full of confidence following their goalless draw with high flying NFA.
Sport
... rest of the action NFA 0 - 0 Al Aqs
The opening fixture of this week’s Soccer League failed to produce any goals as NFA lost the chance to take temporary lead at the top of the table, drawing 0-0 with Al Aqs. It is the second goalless draw in a row for NFA, who failed to find a way past an inspired Al Aqs defence. Asim ‘Jimmy’ Rashid was in fine form as the shot stopper refused to let anything pass into his goal, frustrating the favourites with a string of fine saves. Al Aqs first draw of the season may be their best result this campaign, whilst NFA will be wondering why they weren’t able to bag one goal, against a side that had shipped 11 in their last three outings. MOTM: Asim Rashid’s fantastic display in the Al Aqs goal ensured his side earned a valiant point.
Hyde Park 1 – 1 Super Six
After watching their closest rival drop points in an unlikely encounter with Al Aqs, Hyde Park knew that a win over the league’s bottom side would propel them two points clear at the top. However, as is the case with the unpredictable game of football, things didn’t exactly go to plan for Hyde Park. The table-toppers faced off against Super Six, who impressed last week in a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tetley’s Tino. Things seemed to be going to plan when Tyler Bussue claimed his tenth goal of the season to put the high flyers ahead. Yet, with only one minute left on the clock, Razza Rafique fired in a fine goal to deny Hyde Park a cushion at the top of the league. MOTM: Hyde Park’s Waleed Akhtar impressed from the first to the last whistle.
Samba FC 1 – 0 Tetley’s Tino
After an unfortunate defeat at the hands of Borussia Teeth last week, Samba FC picked up their third win of the season this week with a 1-0 triumph against Tetley’s Tino. Imran Khan grabbed the only goal of the game whilst the notoriously leaky defence, which had shipped 26 goals in just nine games previously, stayed strong throughout. Qammar Hussain starred for the victors to guide his side to a deserved win against what had been the league’s joint best defence, conceding just three goals before this week’s fixture. MOTM: The ever reliant Qammar Hussain picked up this week’s individual accolade.
Jubodhol 1 – 0 Half a Dozen
With teams above them slipping up, last week’s team of the week Jubodhol took full advantage, making it back-to-back wins as they defeated Half a Dozen by the solitary goal. Hamid Ali once again found his name on the scoresheet with the only goal of the game. All four sides above Jubodhol drew, meaning they gained ground on this year’s high flyers. MOTM: Nurul Miah’s fine passing display was a highlight in the one-goal affair.

Fighting for Gaza By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
THE NEW BADDEST MAN ON THE PLANET, BOXER GENNADY GOLOVKIN By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
The most entertaining fighters are those who can deliver that knockout punch, thrilling the public and satisfying their urge and excitement of seeing the other boxer dropped to the boxing canvas that ends the fight. I remember the boxing years of the 1980’s when a heavyweight boxer with a squeaky voice, huge neck and a baby face, burst on the boxing scene and who would later be known as the baddest man on the planet “Iron” Mike Tyson. Tyson is still remembered to this day as the most dangerous boxers to enter the ring because in nearly every boxing bout he fought the fight would always end in a brutal knockout of his opponent. However the knockout excitement in boxing seemed to have virtually disappeared in recent years with most fights going the full 12 rounds until recently when I saw Gennady Golovkin knocking out his opponents with relative ease in nearly every boxing bout he entered. Golovkin is a 32 year old middleweight boxer from Kazakhstan with an impressive boxing record of 31 wins, 28 wins by knockout and no losses with a massive 90 per cent knockout percentage. He is a recognised world champion who holds the
Khalil Alam
interim WBC middleweight title and the WBA belt. The past weekend Golovkin was back in action against a durable opponent called Marco Antonio Rubio who entered the bout against Golovkin with an impressive boxing record of 59 wins with 51 knockouts and 6 losses. Rubio had previously fought some of the top middleweight boxing contenders in the world and also beaten them. However Golovkin destroyed Rubio in just two rounds of the bout with ruthless punching accuracy and precision delivering a huge knockout yet again. Golovkin in my view is the current best middleweight fighters and should be ranked amongst the best pound for pound boxers in the world. The crowd love watching Golovkin fight due to his aggressive boxing style and that is using his formidable power to attack and destroy his opponents in the ring as soon as possible. I feel that Golovkin is not only good but history will prove that he will be one of the all-time greats and in the future he will be talked about as one of the best middleweight boxers in his era. Golovkin at a boxing age of 32 years old cannot be considered a youngster in the sport and to prove his greatness he must fight the likes of Carl Froch, Julio Cesar Chevez Jr, Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto sooner than later even though I expect Golovkin to win against all of them opponents comfortably because he is really that good. To describe Golovkin I would say he is a boxing predator who hunts his prey in the ring and when he finds it he ends them quickly. He is most definitely the scariest and baddest fighter on the planet and has the potential to be remembered as an alltime great.
An enthralling night of sporting entertainment was seen at Dewsbury Town Hall last weekend as some of the region’s finest amateur boxers put up their gloves in the name of charity. On Saturday 1st November, over 500 people gathered to watch 15 bouts, in a show which was organised by the local KBW amateur boxing club, raising funds for children affected by the Gaza conflict. As well as a number of esteemed guests, 30 boxers from as far as Northampton travelled to the West Yorkshire venue to help make the night a huge success. Shammy Cheema, co-owner of KBW, said he was delighted to see so many people turn out to support the project and explained how proud he was to see his gym continue to excel in boxing promotion events. “We are committed to improving community cohesion and community relations through the sport of boxing, and encouraging a healthier lifestyle for the youth,” he said. “With the help of the team which is led by Martin Bateson, who has been a pivotal role in the success of many talented boxers – including Team GB and future Olympian boxers Qais Ashfaq and Jack Bateson, we have managed to build an accomplished team of boxers and welcome all.” The evening of entertainment began with three junior and schoolboy bouts with KBW boxers, Moqeet Rahman and Adam Shakil, both picking up victories whilst teammate, Callum Grace, was unlucky to lose out against Subhan Ahmedof. Brothers, Huzaifa and Ayub Khan continued their rising careers in the sport with two unanimous point’s decisions, and showed why they had received such a build-up in preparation to the night. The following fight saw local competitor, Areeb Cheema, take on Nathan O’Shea of Bracebridge ABC. A close contest over three rounds saw the KBW man edge a split decision on the judge’s cards. Leeds man, Kevin Pratt, took on Steffan Baxter in what was always predicted to be an aggressive fight. Heavy blows were landed by both in the first round yet Pratt’s better conditioning and fitness saw him edge the fight
Bringing communities together through boxing in the later rounds. Clearly landing more precise blows, the judges awarded him a majority decision in one of the highlight bouts of the night. Rounding off the KBW fights, Saif Cheema squared off against Mitch Lisle in the headlining match-up of the night. In what was Cheema’s first bout in his new weight category, both boxers were pushed to the limit in a close three-round affair. Neither competitor wanted
to give the other an edge in the contest yet it was Cheema who started the liveliest taking the first two rounds before being rocked in the third. Lisle, knowing he had to knockout his opponent for victory, landed a huge left hook to the jaw of his opponent, forcing the referee to administer a standing eightcount. Adopting a defensive approach for the remainder of the fight, Cheema eventually saw off his rival as his hand was raised in victory via a split
decision when the final bell rung. During the clashes, a couple of speeches were held, beginning with Labour PPC, Paula Sheriff, who praised the sporting talent on offer during the night and the need to encourage further youth participation. Ms Sheriff was followed by special guest, Iqbal Bhana OBE, from the Palestinian Solidarity Group, who spoke further on the plight of Palestinian people and the suffering of Gaza’s children.

Ramprakash joins England setup
The England and Wales Cricket Board have confirmed that former middle-order batsman, Mark Ramprakash, will take on the roll of batting coach with immediate effect. The 45-year-old, who played 52 tests between 1991 and 2002, replaced his former international team mate Graham Gooch who stepped down from the role in May. Ramprakash averaged a modest 27.32 in tests but enjoyed a prolific career at county level with Middlesex and Surrey, scoring 114 first-class centuries. “I will draw on my 25 years of experience as a cricketer but also am open to learning all the time,” Ramprakash said. “I feel we have a very exciting group of players and am relishing the opportunity to continue working with them.” Gooch was axed from the role by England captain Alistair Cook in what he described as an ‘incredibly tough’ decision. Gooch, who began coaching the side in 2009, said he accepted the change at the time adding: “Alastair informed me that he was in favour of change. “Although this was sad news, I respect his, and new coach Peter Moores', right to implement this change of direction.”

team came up against squads from up and down the country, kicking off the competition against the Scottish representatives Summerston. Despite a humbling defeat, the All-Stars bounced back to qualify from their group and advance into the knockout stages and eventually made it all the way to the final.
As fate would have it, the North-East representatives were once again drawn up against Summerston and with the national title just one win away, a close encounter was always expected. Eventually winning 2-1 in the final, the All-Stars, claimed the prestigious trophy ahead of the 11 other regional teams who had qualified for the finals.
