Dream home trashed

“It has been a torrent of abuse”

SHOCKED: Tenant Damus Plysus was in disbelief at the graffiti

When Mr Mohammed purchased, what he believed to be, his dream home in 2010, the Huddersfield businessman had big plans for the property yet three years later, the house remains derelict after years of intimidation. Smashed windows, racist graffiti and even a fire have all been seen at the residence on Inglewood Avenue, Huddersfield, in what the home owners describes as an attack by the ‘racist geriatric mafia’. Mr Mohammed, a father of three, purchased the home hoping to renovate the site and move in with his family yet the constant barrage of abuse has caused him to ‘seriously reconsider’ his plans. “It has been three years since we bought the property and I still do not know what we are going to do with it,” the West Yorkshire insulation manager explained. “Every time I put in a proposal to change something about the house it gets rejected and the abuse begins. It is a minority in the community but they are seriously causing a problem for everybody else.” The words ‘No P*ki Hotel’ were sprayed across the garage door in January 2012 after planning permission had been put in to begin renovating the house, whilst the words ‘No Muslim Hotel’ were added earlier this

year and still remain. 40-year-old Mr Mohammed initially believed that some of the community had racist attitudes towards Muslims yet after renting out the property, his mindset was quickly changed. He said: “I decided to rent out the property to some Eastern Europeans who were looking for a place in the area, they were just students really. “It wasn’t until they moved in that I realised the discrimination which exists from some of the neighbours. “I remember two of the neighbours saying to them ‘Your kind shouldn’t be living here’. They were shocked and questioned ‘what kind?’, to which the neighbours replied ‘you Eastern Europeans, you don’t deserve to live in such a nice neighbourhood you should go elsewhere’.” Lithuanian student, Darius Lubys, was the tenant subjected to the abuse. After the verbal tirade, a fire was started in the home and subsequently reported to police whereby it was determined an accelerant had been used. Nobody has been arrested since the event. Mr Mohammed currently has an appeal in place to allow building work to finally begin on his property yet remains pessimistic about the possibility

of the plans being approved. He said: “I have had applications turned down before and have been told in advance that they will be rejected because some of the neighbours ‘know people’ on the committee. “Someone recently told me ‘you aren’t building a ‘Mahal’ next door to me’ yet even if we got approval we won’t even be the biggest house on the street. There is one which covers 8,000sq/ft which is much bigger than ours.” Born and raised in Huddersfield, Mr Mohammed must now decide whether his dream property could still serve as a home for his family. Having never been victim of any racist attacks in the past, it is a previously unknown problem which he must now tackle. “The appeal is in now and if it goes through I will certainly take a very long look and consider my position. I can still sell it with permission as I’m thinking about whether I want to be amongst the racist people but there are some nice people there. “At the end of the day, the safety of me and the children is the primary concern. To know these people don’t want you there is totally unnerving so would I want to move in? I still don’t know.”

follow us on twitter: An Indian rocket blasted off on a mission to Mars earlier this week as the South Asian country aims to tap into the $450 billion industry. Despite a host of criticisms, mostly circling around the fact that more than 95 per cent of the country live on less than $5 (£3.11) a day, the ‘budget rocket’ was launched on Tuesday 5th November. Much smaller than a US or Russian vessel, the Mangalyaan, which translates to ‘Mars craft’, weighs approximately 1,350kg, about the size of a small car, and is being carried by a 350-tonne rocket. At a cost of just under $75million (£45m) the rocket will hopefully reach the Red Planet in September 2014, whereby it will signal the first Asian probe to land on the fourth planet from the sun, following in the footsteps of Russia, the US and Europe. Many critics of the project have slammed the launch, saying the money should be spent on tackling the nationwide issues in the povertyridden nation, yet it must be remembered that higher amounts of money have been, some would say, ‘wasted’ elsewhere. For example, the nation currently has plans to build the world’s largest statue, in the state of Gujarat, which will cost a massive £200million. In a nation renowned for its poverty levels and power shortages; priorities, at first glance, certainly seem to have gone out of the window. One reason for this could be the fact that the country is in a constant battle to establish itself as one of the world’s leading powers. Since being labeled as one of the four projected fastest growing economies in the world, outside of the G7, the country has had new expectations thrust upon its shoulders. By reaching Mars before the likes of ‘continental rivals’ China, many may see the feat

as a huge step forward yet others consider the target as a ‘pointless mission’ lacking research goals. “This is a highly suboptimal mission with limited scientific objectives,” explained D Raghunandan of Delhi Science Forum, whilst economist-activist Jean Dreze added that the mission “seems to be part of the Indian elite's delusional quest for superpower status.” $75million is a large figure for a country where more than one billion people are battling hunger and poverty yet it only represents 10 per cent of the country’s space budget. Compare this to NASA’s yearly budget, more than 20 times that of India’s at $16.6billion, and it may not seem so large. When the US began their rocket construction in 1962, President John F Kennedy declared to Americans that “we choose to go to the moon”. However, at that time 21 per cent of the nation were living in poverty. Contrary to beliefs, the rocket launch is only a small percentage of the country’s overall budget and has not led to the more deprived areas being sacrificed as a result. Earlier this year, India signed the National Food Security Bill which will attempt to tackle the hunger problems which plague the country. At a cost of $20billion, the program is significantly more expensive than the rocket launch and is a clear sign of intent that action is being taken at both sides of the economic spectrum. The rocket project is still undoubtedly a huge investment in science, technology and education yet it is one which could propel the country into the forefront of space travel. With Private Spaceflight expected to take off in a massive way over the next few decades, a successful mission by the Mangalyaan could set up the South Asian country for a prosperous future which would filter through the whole country. The event takes place on Sunday 10th November at Centenary Square, with an expected kick-off time at 1.30pm. The fixture organised by the Bradford Quakers, will be played in the style of the truce match that took place between German and Allied troops on the Western Front on Christmas Day 1914. The game is open to all irrespective of age, physical ability, gender, nationality or footballing skills.

The CA members will discuss information from government on the progress of the draft order to create the new body, and receive an update on the progress towards transition next year. It will work closely with the Local Enterprise Partnership board, whose chair is on the committee, to develop links with local businesses.

Bradford Bazaar recently played host to two of South Asia’s most renowned celebrities as screen stars, Samina Peerzada and Dr Vyjayanthimala Bali visited West Yorkshire. Earlier this week, on Monday 4th November, Mrs Peerzada was welcomed to Yorkshire’s biggest Asian Bazaar and was shown around all of the stalls and outlets by Bazaar director, Mr Jasvinder Singh. Mr Singh spoke of how ‘humble’ and ‘welcoming’ the actress was, as she spoke with all the customers and esteemed guests before posing for pictures with more of the centre’s stakeholders. Superstar Samina Peerzada was in the city for the launch of the returning ‘Beyond the Mango’ film festival held in Bradford. After four years of absence, the local film festival returned at the start of November and includes a week long schedule of 16 screenings and interviews scheduled up until Saturday 9th November. Pakistani television actress, and

director, Mrs Peerzada graced the shopping centre, on Cemetery road, with her presence after helping with the launch of the festival of which she is, this year, a patron. Proceeding Mrs Peerzada’s visit was the arrival of Bollywood superstar, Dr Vyjayanthimala Bali. Appearing in films since 1949, Dr Vyjayanthimala truly is big screen royalty and was in Bradford to mark the 20th anniversary of local South Asian and collaborative arts organisation, Kala Sangam, of which she is also a patron. Following the celebrations, Dr Vyjayanthimala visited Bradford Bazaar on Sunday the 27th October and was once again given a warm welcome by all at the establishment. Speaking about the presence of the Bollywood star, Jasvinder Singh said: “It was an absolute honour to be able to cater for somebody of Dr Vyjayanthimala’s repute. “She is one of the most famous people in the world of Bollywood so for her to pay a visit to our shopping centre was brilliant. She was impressed with the availability of everything being under one roof and we are incredibly thankful for her appearance. He added: “To have superstars, like these two fantastic ladies, visit Bradford Bazaar is brilliant not only for us but the whole of the city. Bradford is booming at the minute and these latest celebrity appearances show that we are certainly a city on the up.”

tremendous advances in the treatment of patients soon after stroke, with emphasis on the rapid recognition of the signs of stroke and immediate treatment. But strategies for longer-term care are not as developed and stroke survivors and their families face a number of problems and challenges. “This new research grant aims to develop and evaluate key aspects of a replicable system of longer-term support so that we can improve the quality of life of stroke survivors and their families by addressing unmet needs and enhancing social engagement.” The research will be undertaken across the UK with the help and support of stroke patients, their families and clinicians.

Over recent years, stroke research supported by the NIHR has included studies which have developed early treatments such as clot busting and neuro protection drugs. Therapies that support rehabilitation and long-term care, research into strategies that improve mood and memory following a stroke and provision of appropriate support for carers, are all areas that are seen by experts as crucial for future stroke research. Professor Forster added: “Investment in stroke research is vital if we are to improve the care and rehabilitation of stroke survivors, which we hope will lead to an increased quality of life for patients, their carers and families.”

No scheme of this nature is currently being run by the council but incidents have been reported from Mirfield, Dewsbury, Batley, Birstall and Fieldhead of people allegedly purporting to be from a council-run scheme. Householders would not be approached in this manner by council staff. Wakefield Council is reminding residents to complete and return their electoral registration form to make sure they are properly registered for the local council and European elections in May next year. Electoral registration forms have been delivered to households in the district and residents are reminded to complete and return the form as soon as possible. Electoral Registration staff will begin making personal visits to homes in the next few weeks where a response to the original form has not yet been received. It would help save the council time and money if you fill in your own forms as an electoral canvasser would not need to pay you a visit. Over 120 guests attended the civic reception, which was jointly hosted by the Lord Mayor, Leeds Rugby Foundation and Leeds Rugby. The guests were treated to performances from Leeds Young Authors, RJC Dance, and South Asian Arts-UK, as well as pupils from Holy Family Catholic Primary school who performed a special Haka. Curry Capital Award City scoops hat-trick of titles

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

After clinching their third consecutive ‘Curry Capital’ title last month, Bradford’s restaurateurs headed down South last week for a unique prize giving ceremony. Representatives from Bradford’s eateries, who had led this year’s bid, received trophies and certificates on a special ‘Celebration of Curry Cruise’ which took place on the New Southern Belle on the River Thames. Bradford has now claimed the award for a third year in a row, with this most recent victory putting them level with Glasgow on four wins each. The city’s unique bid included the creation of a limited edition curry flavoured crisp, developed by local company Seabrook and Bradford restaurant Akbar's. Patricia Tillotson accepted the trophy on behalf of Bradford council and the restaurant team of Akbars, Kiplings, Shimla Spice and Omar Khan's, whilst a special award was also made to the Bradford Air Cadets who set a new Poppadomathon World Record, raising £200 for charity. Peter Grove, founder and organiser of the event recognised the huge achievement of the currymad city during the Curry Cruise. He said: “This curry cruise is a fitting end to a fantastic year

during which the British curry family has once again shown its generosity and fun loving nature. Bradford once again ticked all the boxes with the judges showing exemplary teamwork, innovation and fun.” Faisal Hussain, manager of Shimla Spice, Shipley, furthered Mr Grove’s sentiments explaining how Bradford’s love for curry has helped the city become a leader in the field. “Bradford is the Premier League for curries,” he said. “There are so many fantastic restaurants in the city that we certainly deserved to be recognised as Britain’s ‘Curry Capital’. “For this year’s bid, we put together an expert team and have worked extremely hard to retain the title by doing things such as the curry flavoured crisps.

“To win the title just once is a real honour, but to now be named champions a record three times in a row, it is unbelievable and fantastic for Bradford.” Bradford already hosts the annual World Curry Festival and this latest accolade reaffirms the cities position at the top of the curry industry. Bradford Council's Executive Member for Employment, Skills

and Culture Councillor, Susan Hinchcliffe, said she was delighted to see the title return ‘home’. “It just shows we're unbeatable as a city,” she said, “I want to thank our superb restaurants, the Bradford tourism team and of course Seabrooks crisps for making the bid that extra bit special this year. They have all contributed to this wonderful success.”

On Tuesday 12th November, the national ‘No Second Night Out’ campaign, will see Leeds City Council working with St Georges Crypt and the Crime Reduction Initiative(CRI) based in Leeds, and will focus on assisting anyone sleeping rough in Leeds to make sure they don’t spend a second night out on the streets. In Leeds, the council’s housing options service, CRI’s street outreach service and St George’s Crypt all work in partnership to identify rough sleepers and provide respite accommodation at the ‘Leeds Hub’ whilst their accommodation, health and wellbeing needs are identified. The aim is to ensure all rough sleepers are offered a suitable housing option within 72 hours of arriving at the hub.

White Rose Model Free vouchers help inspire young people at the Hamara centre

Enthusiasm and dedication takes you a long way, proven by Dean Stratton the manager of the White Rose Shopping Centre. Born and bred in Lincolnshire, Dean started his first job at only 16, working at Tesco part time. He studied a BA Hons in Business studies which built the foundations for his future role. On completion of University he gained a job at Debenhams as a Human resources officer and worked his way up to Operations Manager. He loved his job role and he particularly liked the organisation aspect of his role. Now at the age of only 34, Dean has been managing the White Rose centre for over a year. His job role consists of managing the security, customer services and cleaning teams, and ensuring all shops are let. The White Rose Shopping Centre is one of the most successful shopping centres in the UK. It has over 13 million visitors each year and was the first shopping centre built in Yorkshire; therefore it was named after the county. Dean started his session by sharing his stories with the young people. He recalled not being as ‘clever’ as his brother but having to work extremely hard to get to where he is now. The message he conveyed to young people was, ‘always be enthusiastic don’t try to be too cool and if you’re looking to work in the retail sector then, employers in the retail sector want energetic and enthusiastic people to work for them’.

As part of the session Dean prepared an activity to get the young people in the mood. If they got most of the answers right they would win a gift card to use at the White Rose. The activity was a group based activity where the young people had to work out a shop name from a photo or part of the shop sign. This helped the young people and proved that team work activities bring the best out of everyone. All the youngsters got the answers right and won a gift card

each. Dean was extremely proud and said: “From what I have seen today I would employ all of you. Your enthusiasm and energy makes you all really desirable to retailers. Enthusiasm is a key point all employers look for so don’t try to be too cool at an interview. Show your enthusiasm and it will get you far.” Dean then shared his feelings about his job, adding: “I am really lucky as I enjoy my job, I like to organise things, and these kinds of jobs fit my nature.”

He then told the young people about his previous job as a Human resources officer explaining it was something he really enjoyed and would happily do it again. He echoed one message throughout, “I have to work really hard. I wish I was really clever as it would have been easy, but I am not and that is why I have to work hard,” he said. “I would have never thought I would have been a shopping centre manager. It wasn’t until I did the job that I saw myself as wanting to continue doing it. I always saw myself as being a Human resources officer. When I picked my subjects for A-levels I picked them so that they would allow me to become a human resources manager.” Dean left the session with a strong statement that got the youngsters thinking: “The biggest challenge I faced when I was young was confidence, I wasn’t very confident, and I lacked enthusiasm, I had to work really hard to be enthusiastic.” The Streetvibe project helping to make a positive change, all sessions of the Role Model Series will be in Asian Express newspaper. Wage rise

Council leaders are today proposing the end of a three year pay freeze which has saved the council around £5million per year. This was a direct result of savings needing to be made following huge Government cuts to Sheffield City Council’s income. If the new pay scheme

plans are implemented, two thirds of staff will be better off. The proposals are targeted to protect the lowest paid the most. Those at the bottom grades on lowest pay will see their wages increase to bring them up towards the top of their pay band. The new plans will protect frontline jobs while at the same time make the pay system simpler for all.

Leeds Met students head to China A Leeds Metropolitan University student and graduate were flown out to Shanghai earlier this week after winning scholarships to travel there to attend an international conference. Elissar Shalhoub, an MSc International Events Management student, and an alumnus of the same course, Yanning Li, attended the 52nd International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) conference in China running the 2nd5th November. ICCA is a global company which represents the main specialists in organising, transporting and accommodating international meetings and events in over 90 countries. The Leeds pair had the costs of their fees, flights and accommodation covered during the conference by the ICCA, after the international company recognised the potential of the West Yorkshire students. Rhodri Thomas, Leeds Met's Professor in Events Tourism and Hospitality, accompanied the two and also partook in the exhibition as the

keynote speaker during the conference at the Best Cities Global Alliance Knowledge Exchange event. Mr Rhodri discussed ways of maximising the benefits of events portfolios for global cities. He commented: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Elissa and Yanning, who both competed with many others studying events management at an advanced level to win these scholarships. The conference in Shanghai will provide them with an excellent opportunity to learn from senior practitioners and to strengthen their networking skills and contacts. “This achievement shows Leeds Metropolitan University is a leader in this area of work, building on the sustained success of the International Centre for Research in Events, Tourism and Hospitality colleagues in securing major international research and evaluation projects concerned with various aspects of event management. It also shows that we make connections between our practitioner networks and our students.”

New educational centre plans accepted

Islamic Centre to park up in Keighley

WELCOMING: Senior Vice-President for the Council of Mosques, Mr Rafiq Sehgal and the proposed site for the Islamic centre, Keighley

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A car dealership’s grounds could soon become home to Keighley’s newest Islamic educational centre after application plans were approved earlier this week. The Reg-Thompson second hand car dealership, Bridge Street, Keighley, had been selected by the Al Hidaayah Foundation to be their new place for Islamic teachings in June, yet the initial bid was rejected. Despite support from the council, the original proposals were met with 16 objections, including opposition from the Bangladeshi Islamic Association in nearby Temple Row, with many parties voicing a concern over traffic congestion. Now, with the site being on the market for more than

three years, it appears the redevelopment plans could be back in the pipeline after Government inspector Philip Major’s decision to grant the appeal. The initial proposal, on behalf of religious group, the Al Hidaayah Foundation, read: “We aim to provide a sanctuary for prayer and knowledge that will preserve the Islamic identity, encompass the true beauty of Islam and unite us to attain success and goodness. “We also believe that this centre will greatly complement existing facilities in the vicinity and meet the spiritual, social and civic needs of Muslims across Keighley and beyond.” Government inspector Philip Major reiterated his belief that such an institution would be beneficial to the area, reassuring concerned stakeholders that traffic congestion should not be a problem. He said: “It may well be that an educational centre would attract a greater throughput of vehicles than a car dealership, though that is by no means certain.” “In any event, the Highway Authority has no objections to the scheme. I cannot agree that lack of on-site parking is likely to

cause problems in the future. “I have [also] been informed of the general concern relating to night time noise and disturbance in the locality and the presence of nearby drinking establishments, which may result in a clash between uses. However, the local police have confirmed that there is no objection to the proposal,” he said. Speaking about the latest proposal Senior Vice-President for the Council of Mosques, Mr Rafiq Sehgal also added how he believes that such an institution could help promote unity in the town. He said: “What I always believe is that any institution, religious or not, which is set up to promote community cohesion is only a good thing. I welcome these groups where people of all faiths can work together and learn from each other. “Looking at the growth of Muslims in the surrounding areas it would make sense to cater for these people yet we must also ensure that establishments like these have an open door policy. Anybody should be able to come in and see for themselves the positive messages which are spread in these places of learning.”

A taxi driver from Leeds received special praise from two of his customers last week after returning a wallet containing hundreds of pounds. Mohammed Ashafaq, of Premier Taxis, Leeds, often finds an array of leftovers in his car; from passports to mobiles, and bank cards to baby bags. The usual routine would be to hand in the valuables to head office or the police who will then return the item to the rightful owner. However, after finding a blank wallet, with no ID inside, just £390 in cash, the 51-year-old driver decided to make it his personal mission to return the money to the rightful owner. “I knew if I dropped it off at the office they would have had no other option but to just hold onto it until a person came forward and that might never happen so I decided to try and find the person myself,” the taxi driver of six years explained. “Initially I thought it may have been a student’s but whilst I was out on a job I drove past an elderly couple’s house, who I had picked up on the day I found the wallet, and by chance called in.” 79-year-old Peter Robinson and his wife of 58 years, Maureen (78), were the residents at the home in Horsforth when the taxi pulled up at the address. To their amazement Mr Ashafaq questioned them about the wallet and within moments it was revealed to be the one belonging to the greatgrandfather of two, Mr Robinson. “I thought it had been put away

safely as we needed the money to pay for the new carpet,” Mr Robinson explained. “When we saw the taxi driver we couldn’t add up why he was here. I didn’t even know the wallet was lost, I had just assumed it was still in the house somewhere. “I used to drive buses and I know that this kind of job may be thankless at times but we are very

grateful to this man. He is very good, honest person.” Mr Ashafaq said that seeing the delight on the couple’s faces made the trip more than worthwhile. “I considered it my duty really to return the wallet,” he said. “Mr Robinson was very kind to offer me money but I could not accept it. He gave me £10 for my trouble and I am very thankful to them both.”

CUSTOM: Peter and Maureen Robinson were extremely grateful to see the wallet returned

Anonymous protest outside palace By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

Hundreds of masked people from the hacktivist group ‘Anonymous’ descended on Buckingham Palace on bonfire night as part of a worldwide march against austerity cuts. The march, which was mainly peaceful, was mirrored by similar protests in more than 400 cities Dublin, including worldwide Melbourne. and Washington Supporters wore Guy Fawkes masks, including celebrity Russell Brand, who revealed his identity, much to the dismay of supporters of the movement. Sporadic outbreaks of violence were reported when police tried to

remove protesters, and a fire was started just yards from the palace gates as protesters threw glass bottles during clashes with police. Officers in riot gear tried to shepherd the crowd, which was part of the pre-arranged Anonymous Million Mask Protest. Several similar events were carried out in cities in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, in opposition to austerity cuts, corruption and an increase in state surveillance. In London, a fire was started near the Victoria Memorial, where at least one man and woman were seen being taken away by officers. It’s estimated around eleven arrests were made in total. Ceylan Hassan, 24, a university graduate said: “They started

shouting move back, move back, but we had nowhere to go. The police started pushing us, screaming 'move back, move back'. “There was a fire on the right hand side of the monument and people started throwing things. “We've been here from the start, for about four hours.” Protesters were moved back away from Buckingham Palace as the atmosphere grew tense. Some of those involved in the march were seen ripping barriers from the side of the road. Sean Roesner, 21, a self-employed computer programmer, travelled to the protest with his brother and friend from King's Lynn, Norfolk this afternoon. He said: “We turned up and the protest was at Buckingham Palace.

When we arrived people were firing fireworks at the Palace. “It was funny. I didn't have any but I would have fired some if I had. “I joined Anonymous because I was arrested under the Computer Misuse Act. I spent eight months on police bail last year and had done nothing wrong.

“We are here to stand up for what we believe in, to make the world a better place.” Mr Roesner said his friend had been among a group of people encircled by the police on The Mall and was waiting for him to be released so they could return home.

Role Models Series returns Coming back after a four week break the Role Models series guest for week eight was Richard Bennett. Richard, 34, is a Youth Development Worker based in Chapeltown, Leeds. He has become a bit of a local hero over the last few years, being involved in the work that he does as a youth worker and football coach as well being a member of the active citizens programme. Richard works for an organisation called Chapeltown Youth Development Centre which is a voluntary organisation focusing on sports & community development. His project specialises in engaging ex-offenders and those who have not been in or part of the system since their school days but may now want a change of lifestyle. Uhuru also facilitates delivery of services with relevant partner organisations relating to employment, education, training opportunities, skills development, and general community engagement. Richard shared his inspiring journey with all the young people at the Hamara centre. Born and bred in Leeds, Richard shared how, because of his hearing and speech difficulties, he struggled to communicate with people leading to bad behavior starting at the early age of seven. From that age until 15 Richard was excluded from various schools whilst his behavior continued to go in a downward spiral. Involved in stealing, fighting and anti-social behavior in general led to him going to jail when he was 15. From this point on, until just five years ago in 2008, Richard was in and out of prison as he continued offending. Within that period he lost his mother and also became a father of two all while being in jail. This started the internal process of self reflection in 1999 and for a short period this brought about change in attitude and behavior however, as the good old saying goes 'Bad habits die hard' Richard soon relapsed and continued with his criminal activity. The young people asked Richard the Role Model Series questions and more. Some very good answers, light hearted moments, funny stories and valuable advice were given to the young people. Richard shared one of the worst things he has had to do is to abseil down a gauge after being challenged by one of the youths from his group. He received a few chuckles as he shared how his most embarrassing moment was when he had to dance in front of an audience adding: 'I know they say black men have rhythm, but I'm one that doesn't’. People who were inspirational to Richard were his mother, she was always there for them and she was involved in youth work for a long time so the link with youth work was always there, his children, and also a well known

The story of one man’s life being turned around lady called Pat Regan who founded her own organisation, Mothers Against Violence, was a person who gave him regular advice. All these were central to Richard turning his life around. His message to the young people was: “Believe in yourself, take time out to know yourself Step out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything. “You are in control of your life so making the right decisions lies in your own hands. Make the most of the structures available to you, be determined in fulfilling your potential. “Do not give up on yourself because if you don't believe in yourself no one else will.” Richard was great. A real inspiration for the young people as this guy is local. He grew up in

Leeds and has made something of himself after having gone down a dark path. He shows that change is possible and how important 'inspirational people' are in helping a person to change. CHILDREN: Hashim Hussain (below) and Haider Ali (right) both sadly passed away when only months old

Children of Jannah set to launch in West Yorkshire

Bradford mother offers support to grieving parents By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A Bradford mother, who suffered the loss of two of her children when just months old, will begin offering bereavement services in the city as part of the Children of Jannah charity. 30-year-old, mother of three, Rezvana Hassan, of Thornbury, Bradford, is the West Yorkshire coordinator for the national charity which helps struggling families during times of bereavement. Aimed predominantly at Muslim mothers, Children of Jannah offers support and information to parents at the most devastating of times. Rezvana became involved with the group after the death of her second child, Haider Ali, approximately 18 months ago. Haider was sadly diagnosed with a rare genetic condition affecting his lungs on the day of his birth, exactly six years after the passing of Rezvana’s first child, Hashim Hussain. These experiences highlighted the need for a sympathetic ear in times of bereavement to Rezvana and consequently lead the West Yorkshire mother to become involved with the Children of Jannah. “A couple of months after my second child had died I found out about the Children of Jannah charity through a friend at the cemetery so I initially joined their Facebook group,” she explained. “From there I began to get involved more and more with the group and became a group facilitator for the child bereavement services in West Yorkshire. “I lost my first son eight years ago and at the time didn’t get any support yet when my second child

died at Martin House, the staff there and other health professionals did offer me the help. “Although I appreciated this so much, I didn’t feel they properly catered for my religious beliefs but it was nice to have the option there. “This is what I like about the Children of Jannah. It is a group who offer support to anybody who has lost a child and no matter what you say, or how you react, you don’t need to explain yourself.” The charity held a launch week for its pilot service in Manchester on the week commencing the 20th October, and Rezvana marked the occasion with a special gift giving event at Bradford Royal Infirmary’s neo-natal unit. With the help of her friend, Kiran Hussain, the pair handed out tens of presents to parents and children. “When I heard about the date of the launch, which also coincided with the eight year anniversary of the death of my first child, I knew I had to do something,” Rezvana explained. “We managed to give out lots of gifts and presents to the children and to see their smiles was really fantastic and showed what the Children of Jannah is all about.” Children of Jannah will run a telephone helpline run by trained volunteers, have a Facebook page, organise meetings, offer support to siblings and other family members and produce help packs and sympathy cards. For more information about the services offered by the support group please visit, www.ChildrenofJannah.com or email westyorkshire@childrenofjannah.com

Asian family law solicitor Local

DIN Solicitors specialise in various areas of law. This week our family law solicitor will be discussing frequently asked questions in relation to Islamic marriage and divorce:

Is a ‘Nikah’ which took place in the United Kingdom considered a legal marriage under the laws of England and Wales? No this is not a valid legal marriage under the laws of England and Wales. In order to make the marriage valid, it must be registered with a Registry Office.

What if the Nikah took place in a country where an Islamic marriage is legally valid? If the marriage took place in a country where an Islamic marriage is considered a legal marriage, such as Pakistan or Saudi Arabia, then you do not need to register the marriage in England. What is a Talaq? A Talaq is where the husband in an Islamic marriage seeks to bring the marriage to an end under Islamic law. The marriage still exists under English law and he must still apply for a divorce under the laws of England and Wales. Can a Muslim woman apply for an Islamic divorce? Bradford-based grocer posts third-quarter sales showing a steady decline Britain's fourth largest grocer Wm Morrison (MRW.L) expects underlying sales to grow in the Christmas quarter after two years in which its lack of exposure to online and convenience store markets has led to successive declines. Morrisons' profits and market share have been dented by its late entry into internet and local convenience store channels which are growing in Britain at about 16 percent and 20 percent a year respectively. It has also been hit by the rise of discounters Aldi and Lidl. To address this, the firm agreed in May to invest over £200 million in a

25-year deal with online grocer Ocado that will involve it starting home deliveries by January 2014. It is also opening ‘M local’ convenience stores, with a target of 100 by the end of the year and 200 by the end of 2014. The Bradford, northern Englandbased grocer is also investing heavily in technology and systems and upgrading its more than 500 stores. “We will move into positive like-forlike sales growth in Q4,” Chief Executive Dalton Philips told reporters after Morrisons posted third-quarter sales that showed a worsening decline.

Victims to tell courts impact of crime Victims’ will have a louder voice in the Criminal Justice System as they are given the entitlement for the first time to read their Victim Personal Statement out in court, Victims’ Minister Damian Green announced last week. The new, simple Victims’ Code published on Tuesday 29th October will make sure that for the first time victims can choose to explain personally to the court how a crime has affected them physically, emotionally, financially or in any other way. The judge will then take this into account when determining the sentence. Written for victims and not the ‘system’, the Code will ensure victims receive all the support they deserve, every step of the way. It sets out in plain English how to navigate an often confusing and intimidating Criminal Justice System, explaining what victims can expect from the moment they report a crime to the end of a trial, and who to demand help from if it is not provided. Victims’ Minister Damian Green said: “For too long victims have felt they are treated as an afterthought in the criminal justice system. No more. I am determined that victims are given back their voice and are fully supported. “The new Victims’ Code will for the first time entitle victims to read their Victim Personal Statement out in court. This will mean offenders and the court can be left in no doubt of the full impact of a crime. “I want to create a tougher justice system. Under this government those who break the law are more likely to go to prison for longer. I’m making sure victims’ voices are heard and that criminals no longer get away with just a slap on the wrist.” Javed Khan, Chief Executive of independent charity Victim Support, said: “We speak to more than one million victims of crime every year and know how often they feel left on the sidelines in the criminal justice system unable to make their voices heard. “We warmly welcome this decision which gives victims the choice to explain to a court in their own words the personal and emotional impacts a crime has had on them and their families, a process we know can help victims cope and recover

Javed Khan, Chief Executive of independent charity Victim Support, says: “We believe the new code for victims is a big step towards making the criminal justice system truly responsive to the needs of victims”

from crime. “We believe the new code for victims is a big step towards making the criminal justice system truly responsive to the needs of victims and we look forward to working with Government, the police,

courts and other partners to ensure it is effectively implemented.” The Victims’ Code will come into force in December 2013 and follows a six week consultation that closed on 10th May 2012.

PROTEST: ‘Save our site’ protests were attended by all ages last week

Asian Express

‘Save this site!’

Campaigners gather to save final playing field in LS6 By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

As Leeds gets ready to host one of sport’s most prestigious awards ceremonies in December, it appears the grassroots games may have taken a backseat in the priority of local governing bodies. The Sports Personality of the Year Awards will be held in the city centre next month for the first ever time, yet by then, one of Leeds’ last surviving playing fields, in the built up Hyde Park area, could have been demolished. The 10mx15m field, located between Chestnut Avenue and Ash Grove, is a rare ‘green space’ found in the Leeds6 postcode and is currently being considered as a location for further housing developments. Plans put forward by Chartford Homes and Holbeck Land last year would see 26 town houses and eight flats built on the site whilst the adjoining sports centre and swimming pool would be demolished and replaced with a retail unit. Local campaigners, under the title of Hyde Park Olympic Legacy Action Group (HPOL), argue that such a move would deprive the area from the right to much needed sporting facilities and would rather see the space utilised as a new sporting facility. John Davison is a volunteer sport coach in the area and one of the campaigners who hopes to see the space awarded to the HPOL. He said: “Council Officers recommend the application by Chartford should be passed at

Plans Panel as they deem that the small amount of open space ‘created’ by this development will be ‘open’ and will go ‘some way to helping provide access to leisure and recreation space in this part of the city’. “They somehow seem to believe that houses and another mini-supermarket will be of more utility than two sports halls and a playing field would be for a community and schools who are acknowledged to be deficient in terms of sports facilities.” He added: “Sport England also have no objection to the proposal of the destruction of the second biggest sports hall in Leeds, in this densely packed area. “Despite the evidence supplied of community use in the past for the site and the efforts of community groups and sports organisations to combine to develop a business plan to run the site as a mixed-use sports facility, Sport England don’t seem to care. “They don’t seem to want to make an effort to develop grass roots sport, only to develop elite athletes.” The land is currently owned by the Grammar School at Leeds and has been backed by fellow educational establishment, Leeds Metropolitan Uni-versity, to become state-of-the-art sporting facilities. A spokesperson for the university said the space would provide: ‘a significant opportunity to enhance our student experience with great coaching, coach education and work experience opportunities’. Local Party members have also slammed the idea of developing more houses in the densely populated area with

local Labour and Liberal Democrats councillors stressing the importance of ‘fitness over finance’ for the area. Neil Walshaw, Headingley’s Labour councillor, believed the housing development would only be approved for ‘profiteering sakes’, benefitting the wealthy minority and ignoring the wider community. He added: “All we need is the backing of Sport England and I believe our case can’t be ignored.” The Hyde Park area is also home to a number of small local businesses who would also be affected should a new retail unit be introduced. Pravin Dayalji has run his convenience store just metres away from the proposed development site, for more than 30 years. He fears that the development of further competition would drive his business to a standstill. “It would definitely have a big effect on me,” he explains. “As a small retailer I have been here for 32 years now and it is difficult as it is. We already have co-op further down the road and a Sainsbury’s behind us with both stores open 24 hours. “Over the years I’ve seen so many people leave and I don’t want to be one of them. There are already enough shops in the vicinity with the supermarkets as well, we don’t need any more.” An initial decision in regard to the planning proposals will be made in December at the Plans Panel hearing. For more information about HPOL please visit www.hpol.hydeparkonline.co.uk and find out how you can get involved.

Poppies for every religion By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

For more than 90 years the poppy has been the symbolic image used to remember those who have lost their lives in battle, and the purchase of one of these little emblems can go a long way in supporting soldiers and their families. Since 1922, the paper replicates have been created and sold to raise money for the Royal British Legion which helps soldiers, from every battle since the First World War, and their families cope with life after war. The money raised is vital in supporting families with everything from recovery and post-stress disorders, to legal cases and pensions, and young widows to elderly veterans. As mentioned in a previous issue of the Asian Express, wooden stakes, with poppies attached, have been sold recently to be placed in the ground as a sign of remembrance and now there is an array of designs available to commemorate the war efforts of different faiths. A wooden cross (Christianity), crescent (Islam), star (Judaism) and Sikh Khanda are all available for purchase from the Royal British Legion stores and offer different faiths the chance to pay respect to fallen soldiers from their respected religions. A group of Sikhs from Leeds have been selling the Khanda stakes at local Gurdwaras to raise funds for the nationwide appeal. One man who will be wearing his

A symbol of support for Remembrance Day

poppy with pride this year is Mohammed Saddique. His father, Goolam Hussein Bawa fought with the Merchant Navy from 1903 at just 19-years-old. After serving in the First World War, the serviceman then took his post during the Second World War and was bestowed the Atlantic Star for his service in the critical Battle of Atlantic. Unfortunately, Goolam did not live to enjoy the freedoms for which he fought, dying during service in Karachi, Pakistan, in 1949. Mohammed Saddique, from Roundhay, will be wearing his poppy to remember those who, like his father,

have served the country so nobly in the past. He said: “He never cared about the long hours and money – he just wanted to serve in the Merchant Navy. “I’m so proud of what he did, because it’s people like him that opened the way for me and everyone else to come to the UK and live here and be proud to be British. “He was willing to give his life for Britain and he wasn’t even British. This is the message we need to give our children and youth of today, because this country has given us an awful lot.”

Treading water n 5 July 2000, 10 year old Annie Woodland suffered a serious brain injury during a school swimming lesson in normal school hours as required by the national curriculum. At the time she was a pupil at Whitmore Junior School, for which the Essex County Council (“Essex CC”) education authority was responsible. Annie was swimming in a group being taught by a swimming teacher, Ms Burlinson, and a lifeguard, Ms Maxwell, was poolside. It is alleged that both negligently failed to notice that Annie had got into difficulties in the water, causing her to suffer the injury which has left her with severe brain damage. Neither was employed by Essex CC, their services had been provided to Essex CC via a contract with Direct Swimming Services to provide the lessons. Subsequently proceedings were issued on behalf of Annie Woodland claiming negligence against numerous parties including Essex CC. Part of the claim included an allegation against Essex CC that at the relevant time it had owed her a ‘non-delegable duty of care’ i.e. even though Essex CC had subcontracted the swimming lessons to a third party it still owed its pupils a duty of care whilst they were in attendance at those swimming lessons. The Council denied it owed that duty and successfully applied to strike out that allegation against it in the High Court. The allegation to strike out was upheld in the Court of Appeal. This was appealed by the parents. Earlier this month the Supreme Court held that Essex CC had delegated the control of Annie and her classmates to third parties to carry out an integral part of its teaching function and if it was found that the third parties had been negligent then the Council would be in breach of that duty. The case has now

O

Please contact Luke Patel on 0113 227 9316 or by email at LPatel@LawBlacks.com

been passed back to the High Court for the court to determine whether Essex CC will be liable for Annie’s injury. The ‘non-delegable duty of care’ is a departure from the normal fault-based principles of negligence and can only arise in exceptional cases. Lord Sumption in his judgment set out five defining features of the circumstances in which a non-delegable duty of care will exist. So what can schools do to protect themselves from a breach of a ‘nondelegable duty of care’? There are three options available to schools: • Don’t offer activities with a high degree of risk. The advantage of this option is that any danger of liability is averted but the clear disadvantage is that children lose out on new experiences. • A school may attempt to insure themselves against breaches of a ‘nondelegable duty of care’ committed by independent contractors. In reality an insurance premium off the back of the Supreme Court’s judgment will be sky high. • Schools should seek to have contractual clauses drafted by legal experts whereby the independent contractor indemnifies the school in relation to the liability of the school’s non-delegable duty of care, where the liability is a result of the independent contractor’s negligence. In reality only large independent contractors could indemnify losses when the worst case scenario occurs, as in the case of Annie where her claim for damages is estimated to be in the region of £3million. We at Blacks can assist with the drafting of contracts and any disputes arising as well as claims for Personal Injury.

Twitter arrives on the Stock Exchange Social Media site soars on first day of trading

OPEN: Twitter was officially launched on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday 7th November

After starting up just seven years ago, social media site Twitter has fast become one of the most visited websites on the Internet and last week it took the huge step onto the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). With shares initially offered to the public for $26 on Wednesday, the official trading began on Thursday 7th November where prices soared way above expectations. Prices increased as much as 92 per cent in its first day, reaching a peak price of $50 with investors eager to snap up the shares in the micro-blogging website. By midday the shares were already up 73.7 percent to $45.15. Officially, more than 13 million shares were traded once they became available an hour after the stock exchange opened. The opening price valued the shares at about 22 times the forecasted 2014 sales, nearly double that multiple at social media rivals Facebook Inc and LinkedIn Corp. All the more amazing, is the fact that Twitter has more than 230 million users, but is yet to make a profit, with many investors looking for future rewards.

Including restricted share units and other securities that could be exercised in the coming months; the company's market value was over $28 billion. Twitter executives including Chief Executive Dick Costolo and the company's three co-founders - Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Jack Dorsey - went to the floor of the NYSE to witness the IPO. The Big Board, which marked the occasion with an enormous banner with Twitter's bird logo along its Broad Street facade, snatched the offering away from Nasdaq after the normally tech-focused Nasdaq stumbled with the larger Facebook flotation last year. “Facebook was so overhyped people felt like they couldn't miss out,” said Kenneth Polcari, a senior floor official at O'Neil Securities Inc. “Twitter isn't like that, though you can feel the excitement.” British actor Patrick Stewart rang the opening bell at the exchange together with 9-year-old Vivienne Harr, who started a charity to end childhood slavery using the micro-blogging site.

Government abandons £3,000 “security bond” for high risk overseas visitors, Home Office confirms

The Muslim Pound

Figures released earlier this week show that Britain has more than 10,000 Muslim millionaires in the country, with the group contributing £31billion to the economy. A report titled ‘The Muslim Pound - How Muslims Add Value to Britain's Prosperity’ was released by the Muslim Council of Britain ahead of the just-concluded ninth World Islamic Economic Forum Meet 2013 in London. In London alone, an estimated 33.6 per cent of small to medium enterprises are Muslim-owned, and are represented through 13,400 Muslim-owned businesses. More than 70,000 jobs have been created by the industries with some going n to become nationwide and international names. On top of the 10,000 millionaires, a further 114,548 Muslims in England and Wales occupy higher managerial, administrative and professional occupations. Asian

visa bond scheme

The visa bond scheme, which was set to be introduced this month has been scrapped. It was announced by Home Secretary Theresa May in June this year after Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg threatened to block it. Under the plan, visitors from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Ghana seeking a sixmonth British visa would have been obliged to pay a refundable 3,000pound cash bond to deter them from overstaying. It would be forfeited if they failed to make the return trip. The government chose those

countries because they were "high risk" sources of illegal immigration, it said. Polls show that immigration is one of the most important issues for voters in Britain. Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg initially said the bond plan was an idea worth exploring, but changed his mind after some in his party called it discriminatory. Under his version of the policy, it would only apply to people from "high risk" countries who had been refused a visa through the normal route. Business Secretary Vince Cable has criticised the level at which the bond was set and said that it had caused "outrage" in India.

Sheffield Hallam unveils £6m sports park A new sports park for football, rugby, American football, cricket and lacrosse has opened in Sheffield, following a £6m redevelopment. Sheffield Hallam University's new 22-acre sports park at Bawtry Road was officially launched on Wednesday 6th November by the University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Philip Jones. Professor Jones said: "Sheffield Hallam is a leader in sports education, and one of the biggest providers of courses in sports education. Sport, in addition, is a core element of the academic and social life of the University, and gives a real sense of belonging to the

University. This sports park is one of the best outdoor multi-sports facilities in Yorkshire, and will benefit not only our students, but the community teams that use it as well. "We are committed to increasing access to a wide range of high quality sport facilities for both our students and the local community. This has been exemplified recently in both this project and the opening of the Sheffield Hallam City Athletics Stadium at Woodbourn Road." The Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park has been redeveloped to increase the standard at which the University plays, and increase participation in sport for both Sheffield Hallam students and the

local community. The park will predominantly see football, rugby, American football and lacrosse played there, and Sheffield United Cricket Club will continue to play on the cricket square. Facilities at the park include international standard football and rugby pitches with floodlights, along with artificial 3G pitches, which can be used for a variety of sports. The Graham Solley Pavilion gives a centre to the park, and houses changing rooms, physiotherapy facilities and a social space for students and visiting teams. There is also a balcony for spectators to watch matches while they relax and have refreshments.

The decision to scap the visa bond scheme has received a Jail for Birmingham Airport’s smuggling pair wide range of reactions. “We want the same control of immigration and our borders that Canada and Australia enjoy. What is so unreasonable about that? To my knowledge these are internationally respected nations which do not have an illiberal state television corporation subverting them from within.”

“Forget the bond, it only makes those intent on "overstaying" even more determined to beat the system. Introduce a "sponsorship" scheme (as in many Mideast countries for example) that makes the sponsor (a full UK tax-paying citizen with a legal address, UK passport and an NI number) fully responsible if his/her "visitor" doesn't leave. That takes the burden off the UKBA and tax payers in one go.”

“It seems like a good idea to me, the only reason that I can think of for the government dropping the idea is that they believe it may cost them votes at the next general election. Don’t they realise that it may have gained them far more votes than they may have lost?”

“This idea sounds good, makes a good soundbite and probably wins votes, but it will scare of some legitimate visitors; visitors who come to and spend lots of money in this country.”

“The government have decided that it will cost more money than it saves, they are probably correct, but they should have realised that long before they announced the policy.”

Two security workers at Birmingham Airport have been jailed for helping illegal immigrants pass through border control. Imtiaz Ahmed and Ghulam Sarwar, both former employees of private contractor ICTS, allowed passengers with forged passports from India, on to flights to Canada. The pair was sentenced to seven years in prison with 45-year-old Mr Sarwar receiving a three-year sentence, and Ms Ahmed, 45, receiving four years. Birmingham Crown Court heard how the process would begin with one person, carrying a genuine passport, checking in on a flight, before passing their boarding card to someone holding a fake passport with the same name. The holder of the fake passport would then pass through airport security, with the aid of Ahmed and Sarwar. The National Crime Agency said the UK passport holder would be

As half-time approached at Upton Park last weekend, fans from both sides of the crowd made their way indoors for the half time refreshments. One small group of Muslim supporters gathered in the Sir Trevor Brooking stand to conduct their Mahgrib prayers - the fourth of devout Muslim’s five prayers a day, as the match coincided with the set prayer time. However, after beginning their prayers at approximately ten minutes before the half time whistle (6pm), the small group became the target of insults and intimidation from a section of home supporters. They were met first by disbelief, then swearing and finally by increasingly loud chants of “Irons”, the club’s nickname, apparently intended to drown out the prayers. The Muslim fans turned round anxiously to see they were being filmed and stared at, yet carried on with their ritual. The supporters, who are understood not to have made any complaint, had been invited to the club as part of a highly commended initiative to forger close links with local community groups. One member of the small congregation was Ali, who spoke to BBC Radio about his experience at the stadium. “There were people crowding us and sort of breaking us apart from each other. They were laughing behind our heads really loudly and shouting in our ears,” he explained. “It was something along the lines of ‘I can’t believe what I am seeing’ and initially it was just one

STADIUM: West Ham United’s Upton Park was where the incident occured

voice, then it was a couple of voices. The group started growing bigger. There were more offensive remarks made, ‘what you doing here?’ ‘Why are there so many of you?’, ‘get out of here’.” Ali was in attendance as a representative of one of the hundreds of organisations who were offered discounted tickets by the London outfit in an attempt to promote the club in the community. A large number of Asian Residents live in the surrounding area to the ground and therefore were qualified for the discounted tickets. Danny Lynch, of leading anti-

racism charity Kick it Out, said the situation was ‘unpleasant’ for all involved. He said: “West Ham united have a very good track record in promoting equality and inclusion. We are in regular dialogue with some of the community groups who were on the receiving end of some of this ‘unpleasant’ behaviour. “Things on Saturday seemingly didn’t go to plan across the board and I think there is an acknowledgement from the club and certainly from some of the supporters as well. We urge anyone who was on the receiving end to contact us.”

Should faith be practiced in public places or do establishments need to do more to cater for people’s religious beliefs?

Ikram Butt: “I feel that to have venues which allow individuals to perform their religious duties would be a positive forward step. There are already a lot of good examples where such facilities are in place such as Airports and some sport clubs. Nobody will be asking for a designated prayer room yet if there was just an allocated room where we people of any religion have the option to go, that would be positive.”

Nazim Ali: “There should definitely be rooms inside stadiums now where Muslims can go and practice their faith. As an avid football fan myself, too often do I find it hard to attend matches because I am a devout Muslim and have to pray five times a day. If there is no place catering for my beliefs at a stadium then I simply cannot go to the match. “I do think clubs are beginning to learn and there are examples of this. Bayern Munich have facilities for their Muslim players like [Franck] Ribery and Newcastle, who have brought in a lot of French Muslims to their side also have an area for them. “I believe that stadiums are big enough for one room to be designated to Muslim’s for prayer. It wouldn’t cost the club anything and would be likely to help boost attendance from people of different faiths and markets.”

Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed: On-the-run terror suspect to claim damages

LEGAL ACTION: Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed who cut off his electric tag and escaped surveillance, has now begun legal action against the government

The tagged suspect who escaped surveillance by dressing in a burka is claiming damages from the Government in a case involving claims of torture. Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed, who vanished from a London mosque on Friday November 1st, has launched a human rights legal challenge involving allegations that Britain was complicit in his torture by the authorities in Somalia. The 27-year-old is the subject of a Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measure but managed to escape surveillance by disguising himself as a woman and slipped out of a mosque. It has been claimed that he has been trained and fought for the al Qaeda-linked Somali group al Shabaab. The manhunt currently includes the Metropolitan Police's counter terrorism command, MI5 and the UK Border Force. The High Court heard how Mohamed was bringing a claim against the Foreign Office, the Home Office, the Ministry of Defence and the Attorney General.

Mohamed and another, referred to as CF, accuse the British authorities of consenting to their arrest by Somaliland authorities in January 2011 and then allowing their detention and torture. Mohamed launched his damages claim under a cloak of anonymity and was referred to in court papers as ‘MA’ but anonymity was lifted following his disappearance. The Home Secretary Theresa May has insisted Mohamed, who is the second terror suspect under a terrorism-prevention measure to go missing, does not pose "a direct threat" to the public. However, it has emerged that Mrs May was mistaken when she claimed in the House of Commons that the police had Mohamed's passport. In a statement today from the chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, the Labour MP Keith Vaz, he discloses that the Home Secretary had written to correct an answer she had given him in which she said: "I do not have his passport but the police do." Mrs May amended her response writing: "I do not have his passport. Mohamed was not in possession of his British passport when he returned to the UK so there was no passport for the police to seize." Mr Vaz said: "I am amazed that Home

Office officials should have briefed the Home Secretary so poorly on such an important issue. When there are only eight people on Tpims they ought to know every detail about them. "It is a worry that there may be other factual errors in the way this matter has been handled and I will seek reassurance about this. “It could well be that Mohamed has another passport and her answer has raised questions about his current whereabouts. We will be raising these questions with Charles Farr when he comes before the Committee next Tuesday.” It is thought Mohamed used a sharp instrument to cut off his tag and was last seen at the An-Noor Masjid and Community Centre in west London. Mohamed and CF were detained in Somaliland on 14th January 2011 and held until their removal back to the UK on 14th March that year. Mohamed alleges the fact the British authorities knew he was about to be arrested in Somaliland was demonstrated by the Home Secretary's decision to apply for a control order against him "as a precaution" prior to his detention. The first control order against him was sanctioned by High Court judge Mr Justice Silber on 13th January 2011.

“London can lead the world as an Islamic finance hub” This week, more than 1,000 investors from more than 100 countries and 15 global leaders are gathering for the ninth World Islamic Economic Forum. The forum is not in Dubai, Jakarta or Islamabad, however, but in London. For the first time, it is being held in a non-Islamic country – and Britain is honoured to play host. This is an example of the UK’s position as the centre for global finance. And we intend to keep it that way. That is why I have already set out to ensure that the City of London is the home to fastgrowing new markets, from Indian infrastructure funds to offshore Chinese renminbi. Now we have set ourselves this ambition: to be the unrivalled western centre for Islamic finance. This will not only create jobs in Britain, but it will also bring investment. London’s Shard building and the athletes’ village for the 2012 Olympic Games were made possible by Islamic finance. And Islamic investment is continuing to play a vital role in rebuilding UK infrastructure – from the £400m Malaysian investment in Battersea power station, which will regenerate the Nine Elms area of London after decades of decay; to the £1.5bn Dubai investment in the London Gateway, the UK’s first deep-sea container port. Just look at the mathematics. Islamic finance is growing 50 per cent faster than the traditional banking sector, and it has huge growth potential. A quarter of the world’s population is Muslim but only 1 per cent of the

By George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer

world’s financial assets are sharia-compliant. Across the Middle East and north Africa, less t han 20 per cent of adults have a formal bank account. That gap presents a huge economic opportunity for the UK. We are building on existing strengths. London, with $19bn of reported assets, is already a major home to Islamic finance outside the Islamic world. Britain has more sharia-compliant banks than any other western European country. SNEH JOSHI

March 21st - April 20th

This is not a time to take undue risks with money yet it is certainly favourable for those who are working towards improving their earning potential. It is not only career and employment that come under this fortunate trend because your creative energies will be very much to the fore, too. Tread carefully where legal matters are concerned.

TAURUS

April 21st - May 21th

You will probably have little cause to complain this week. Expect everything to run smoothly and luck to attend your efforts. However, underneath this positive surface you may be plagued by a feeling of restlessness, an uneasy feeling that something is not quite right. Try to strike a balance between material and emotional affairs!

GEMINI

May 22nd - June 21st

It is a particularly favourable time for dealing with financial interests with a long-term basis, such as investments, insurance and pension schemes, legacies and all jointly held resources. There may be a certain amount of unfinished business to be dealt with. Therefore you will need to adopt a fairly flexible policy in order to accommodate the odd twists and turns of everyday life.

CANCER

June 22nd - July 22st

Extra energy and drive will serve you well in getting things accomplished, but try not to come on too strong when you deal with others. There appears to be a more successful trend coming into effect. Amorous affairs continue to be highlighted - whether or not this leads to a lasting relationship depends much on your own personal maturity and circumstances.

for senior executives at the University of Cambridge announced this month. We need to do even more if we want the UK to reap all the benefits of Islamic finance. So we have announced plans to make government schemes such as student loans, start-up loans and the enterprise allowance compatible with Islamic finance rules. But with the World Islamic Economic Forum in town, now is the time for a big and bold step that will cement the UK’s reputation in the Islamic financial world. Today the prime minister will announce that the UK Treasury is working on the practicalities of issuing a bond-

like sukuk worth about £200m. Our ambition is clear: to make Britain the first sovereign to issue an Islamic bond outside the Islamic world. Sukuk bonds do not pay interest but instead entitle investors to a share in the returns generated by an underlying asset, such as property, making them Islamiccompliant. These bonds will support the expansion of Islamic banking in the UK – providing economic benefits to non-Muslims and Muslims alike, including the 2.7m Muslims living in Britain. The government’s Islamic bonds issue will act as a catalyst for corporate institutions to follow suit – further expanding the use of sukuk as an asset class in the global capital markets, and helping to promote more needed overseas investment in Britain’s infrastructure. Britain is at its best when it is open to the rest of the world. So while others in the western world resist change, this government is embracing it – banging the drum for British businesses, seeking out new markets and welcoming overseas investment with open arms. We are prepared to take the big steps our nation requires if it is to succeed in the global race. Whether it is attracting money from China, rejecting damaging protectionism and financial transaction taxes, or issuing the first sovereign Islamic bond in the western world – this government is doing what it takes to open Britain up for business, and for new sources of finance and extra jobs.

Telephone: 0208 518 5500 July 23st - August 23rd

Don't be afraid to act forcefully if your instinct tells you it's time for change. If you know your ground and are not afraid to stick your neck out, you can create your own opportunities. This week the focus is your house of family and home. Besides spending more time tending to domestic affairs, the focus can be on cultivating and nourishing your inner foundations, so to speak.

VIRGO

August 24th - September 23rd

LIBRA

September 24th - October 23rd

This week you will make your best progress by focusing your mental and physical energies on what you want to achieve. Intense focus is what is needed now. The underlying trend seems to be pulling you into a much wider social circle now. This is bound to enrich your life and give you a deeper sense of purpose.

The powerful combination of planets in your chart throws a significant light on material concerns. The cash situation continues to be rather erratic. However, problems can be avoided if you can curtail extravagant impulses and keep everything well organised. However, there are indications of favourable changes and developments in the areas of career and employment.

SCORPIO

October 24th - November 22nd

If lately you have had all sorts of demands being placed on you from all sides, don't despair; take some time out to reflect. Try and work out where you want to make changes in your busy life. Once you know, don't hesitate to implement it systematically. A tremendous amount of planetary activity in your chart signals a time of mixed emotions as well as personal issues to be dealt with.

SAGITTARIUS

November 23rd - December 21st

Sun's transit of your 12th Solar House indicates that experience will put you in a deeply reflective mood. This is a favourable time for getting away from usual routines and seeking a retreat for a few days. All the better if you are interested in such things as meditation, yoga and therapies that help you to get in closer touch with your inner self.

CAPRICORN

December 22nd - January 20th

All close ties of love and affection will benefit from the gentle influence of Venus. If you are married or have a well-founded relationship, it seems that the pattern of events will somehow draw you closer together emotionally. Capricornians who are not yet wholly decided on what direction to take career-wise, this is a fine time to do some serious thinking.

AQUARIUS

January 21st - February 19th

Having all the major planets above the horizon in your solar chart shows that the general pattern of events will focus your attention on the need to make an impact on the world. Although the very practical affairs of life continue to be highlighted, this does not mean that there will be all work and no play.

PISCES

February 20th - March 20th

You will feel energetic and confident as the week begins. New beginnings are favoured around now, as long as you do not bite off more than you can chew. Your thinking is inspired, so listen to your thoughts. This may be a time of expansion and improved opportunity and it would be unwise to let yourself become complacent. Affairs of the heart are likely to flourish.

Smoochy, smoochy… is ok…?

Even before the lovely duo of Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan decided to tie the knot, they had decided not get intimate with other people on the big screen. But, post marriage, Kareena has rubbished all such claims, saying that she doesn’t mind Saif getting intimate with other women onscreen, because their profession requires such things. Talking to the media persons, Kareena Kapoor said that she doesn’t feel insecure about her husband Saif Ali Khan getting intimate with other actresses in movies. Bebo says that it’s their profession, so it has nothing to do with her personal life. “We do not feel insecure. This is my professional life and my personal life has got nothing to do with [my professional life] at all. They are two separate areas of my life. There is no insecurity that I feel [when Saif is getting intimate with any heroine]. He is an actor and that is his job,” Kareena said. Kareena even went on to say that Saif shouldn’t hesitate in doing intimate scenes if the scripts requires him to do it. “If it is a romantic song he should look like a romantic hero,” she said. A while ago, Bebo also said that she’s free to do kissing scenes in the movies, even after marriage, and there’s no kissing rule as such between the two.

We’d love to know what you think – would you be cool if your partner was kissing someone else ‘professionally’? Let us know – email us on juicycomments@asianexpress.co.uk

Dj Surinder Rattan taking the Indian film industry by storm One can only admire how much this talented pioneer in the UK Asian Music Industry and entrepreneur has achieved over the past few years. Hailing from the streets of Manchester, a key figure in the music industry DJ Surinder Rattan first came to the attention when he released ‘The Lick’ and delivered the pioneering track 'Tappe', then ‘Kala Kala Munda’. He’s also played a key role in launching many artists such as Metz n Trix, Joga , Roach Killla and Garry Sandhu. Surinder is one of the most inspiring and

influential Brit Asian music producers receiving numerous accolades and awards. The guy’s no novice wannabe – he’s had semi-classical training from Ustads ‘Babbar & Javed Niazi Khan’ (sons of Ustad Tufail Niazi Khan - folk legends from Pakistan) and has a production history that spans several music genres. Also Surinder has previously hit the club mainstream charts with OMG at No1 Spot!! 2013 has defiantly been the year for Dj Surinder Rattan working with Gippy Grewal. The release of ‘ Love Ho Gaya’

from Gippy Grewal’s forthcoming movie and Akshay Kumar’s home production ‘Bhaji In Problem’, set for worldwide release on 15th November 2013, has seen the talented UK music producer take the Indian film industry by storm with his fresh versatile and unique music production skills. THREE RECORD’S ARTISTS ANNOUNCE THEIR NEXT SINGLE “DHO GUTTAN” Bhangra’s latest sensation Jind Mahi and desi vocalist Binder Pasla of internationally renowned music group RDB’s label Three Records, make an epic return with the melodic tunes of Dho Guttan, harmoniously supported by Punjabi pop princess Miss Pooja. Exuding an authentic Bhangra beat and filmed in what looks like the lush green fields of Punjab, the father-son duo’s Dho Guttan is all set to captivate music lovers with a euphoric experience. For the first time in his musical career, rather

than just lending his vocals to a track, Jind will be seen performing an acting role in the music video alongside Jes Sihra, the lead model who makes her debut in the video. The video was shot by the highly acclaimed production company “The Frame Lab", whom had recently won an award for directing the RDB track ‘We Doin’ it BIG’. Jind and Binder’s previous releases have included "Saday Naal", which was Jind's vocal debut, the hit track "English Daru", Jind’s first official release on the Three Records label, set up by international urban Bhangra/Bollywood group RDB and the tongue in cheek track ‘Kanjuce’. Binder is an experienced vocalist and songwriter behind hit tracks such as ‘Yaari’, ‘Oh Preeti’ and ‘Sajna’ and has worked with several

high-profile producers, including RDB and DJ H. Speaking about the inspiration behind the new track Jind says, "I’m extremely ecstatic to lend my vocals to Dho Guttan alongside my father. The song has a raw Punjabi feel to it and Miss Pooja’s contribution to the track has enhanced the track all the more. I am very excited to hear the reaction of the listeners when the track releases on the 7th of November.” On the latest track collaboration, Surj from RDB said: “We are so excited and thrilled about the release

of Dho Guttan. It has such an authentic vibe to it and Jind, Binder [Paaji] and Pooja have done a fantastic job. It is a celebration of love and togetherness beautifully brought together by the father son duo with the support of Miss Pooja. We’re hoping the listeners enjoy it as much as we did producing this.”

Priyanka Chopra signed up as Guess’s ‘first brown’ model

www.asianexpress.co.uk

November 2013 - 2nd Edition

Classic beauty… Priyanka Chopra seems to be constantly making Bollywood headlines recently. Now, the former Miss World winner actress turned singer just shot a 2013 holiday campaign with photographer Bryan Adams–yep, the musician–for Guess. “I’m like their first brown model. For a global fashion brand, for them to move their campaign into a global space, for me it’s an honor,” said Priyanka. Priyanka’s Guess campaign came about all thanks to her hairstylist who introduced her to Paul Marciano who said she reminded him of Angelina Jolie–and he instantly knew she was his next Guess girl, telling her, “You’re it. It has to be you.” When working with musician/photographer Bryan Adams– apparently he’s huge in India–the vibe of the photoshoot was “young Sophia Loren” and Priyanka says that she wanted to play characters.

“I wanted every picture to speak of a story,” she said. The images definitely evoke a sense of retro glamour mixed with the classic Guess sex appeal. The actress, who has been acting in Bollywood films for some ten years now, also has an album coming out via Interscope in spring 2014 and it seems like she’s ready to take on America. She commented: “It’s scary, but I grew up partly here too. So I’m an amalgamation of both the East and West. “I’m not too American and I’m not too Indian, but I’m a global citizen, and that’s what most people are today. And I don’t want to have to change who I am to try and fit in or cater to a certain audience.” Beautiful with a great head on her shoulders? Role model alert! She was even studying to be an engineer and wanted to work at NASA before all of this show biz stuff.

Rajeev B unleashes ‘The B-Mix Chapter 2’

‘The B-Mix Chapter 2’ will be available as a FREE DOWNLOAD from www.e3uk.com on 6th November 2013

Diwali is over but the biggest cracker of the year is just about to explode! It's time to BFamous again with the ultimate mash-up by one of the biggest names in the DJ industry. Rajeev B delivers the B-Mix Chapter 2 due to the humongous response to the first chapter back in February this year. The mix-tape contains 12 current bangers with an extra three bonus tracks and includes a version of 'Gabru' by Yo Yo Honey Singh which features controversial references to Imran Khan's 'Satisfya' reminding us of the internet 'beef' earlier this year! Rajeev says:"I've had so many people approach me and give me positive messages both from the industry and general public alike! I decided another album had to happen. I created

so many tracks that they wouldn't fit on the album so I've shifted a couple to Chapter 3 which will be out in Feb next year!" Rajeev is relishing on the success and bookings that Chapter 1 is still bringing in. With one of the big tracks on the previous mix-tape, 'Patandra' being featured in a Brit-Bollywood film releasing this Christmas called 'Born to be King', 2014 is going to be one to remember for the young music maker. Rajeev is part of the high profile collective 'Kudos Music' and is a master in the art of the mix-tape. Chapter 1 of the series became the 'official free giveaway' at this years Bhangra Showdown at the Hammersmith Apollo with over 2000 copies of the album being distributed on the night. Rajeev

has his sights set on doing the same next year. In a message for his supporters, Rajeev said: "I just want to give a massive thank you to all my family, friends, supporters and well wishers from all over the globe who took the time to listen to my work. It's really been overwhelming to know so many people have so many stories to tell about Chapter 1. Whether it be a Facebook message, a tweet, email, phone call or anything, just hearing that people all over were listening to my mixtape whilst partying, exercising, driving or even working was worth all the hardwork. I really hope everyone likes Chapter 2 and please continue giving me your feedback. Afterall, the music is for you!"

The Jaguar F-Type Coupé – the most dynamically capable, performance-focused, production Jaguar ever – will make its global debut from a secret location on November 19th in Los Angeles. Set for the global debut at at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 20th, the Coupe picks up after where the Convertible left off, with an all-aluminium body. The Coupé range will deliver in production form the uncompromised design vision of the acclaimed C-X16 concept (which was revealed September 2011), which was terrific, and will complement the existing 2013 ‘World Car Design of the Year’ award-winning F-Type Convertible range. Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar, said: “The excitement generated when we revealed the C-X16 concept was terrific; so to now be on the cusp of what I can assure you will be a drama-filled reveal event in Los Angeles for F-Type Coupé is a very significant moment. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive reaction to FType Convertible, but for me the purity of creating a sports Coupé is a uniquely satisfying process – and I know that both visually and dynamically, F-Type Coupé raises the bar yet again.” We won’t know the full technical details of F-Type Coupé until the LA Motor Show, but can only presume that it will be offered in three models – the F-Type, F-Type S, and FType V8S. The Asian Express predicts that there’ll be a choice of two engines with three distinct horsepower outputs: a 3.0liter supercharged V6 producing 335 horsepower for the FTYPE. The same 3.0 then makes 375 hp for the F-Type S; and at the top of the range, in the F-Type V8S - s a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 churning out 488 hp. The F-Type Coupe will go on sale in spring 2014. Electrifying BMW’s i3 gets its first award even before it goes on sale

The BMW i3 has collected its first accolade in the UK even before it goes on sale later this month in the ‘Electric and Hybrid Car’ category in a ‘Top 100 Car list’. Lauded for its holistic approach to electric car ownership and genuine appeal, not just to those looking for an electric car, the BMW i3 trumps the competition in this new but highly competitive category. The new BMW i3 is the first model to launch within the BMW i range. Two BMW i cars are confirmed for production, the fully-electric BMW i3 megacity vehicle and the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car. The BMW i3 is BMW’s first fullyelectric production car and is due to go on sale in the UK later this month,

priced from £25,680. Meanwhile, the BMW i8 will go on sale in the UK in 2014 priced at £99,845. Like the i8, the BMW i3 features an all-aluminium chassis combined with a passenger cell made entirely from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic. As well as the vehicles themselves, BMW i will encompass a range of premium services for mobility aimed at optimising the use of parking spaces, charging infrastructure, ‘smart’ navigation systems, intermodal route planning and access to other BMW vehicles on an ‘on-demand’ basis. BMW is the first premium vehicle manufacturer to offer such a comprehensive ownership package surrounding electric mobility.

PORSCHE GRAN TURISMO REACHES NEW HEIGHTS

NEW PANAMERA TURBO S •Panamera Turbo S model makes debut at Tokyo Motor Show •Uprated 570 hp twin-turbocharged V8 engine combines 0-62mph in 3.8 secs •All-wheel drive four door, four seater epitomises the Gran Turismo concept •Features advanced adaptive chassis technology and exclusive styling details •Priced from £131,049, on sale now with deliveries from January 2014

Combining a power output of 570 hp with an extensive level of dynamic and comfort-oriented features, the four door, four seat Porsche Panamera Turbo S epitomises the Gran Turismo concept. The new 192 mph saloon car will be guaranteed special status at the pinnacle of the range when it celebrates its world premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show (22 November - 1 December). The sporting and luxurious character of the new Panamera Turbo S is evident not only in its driving performance, but also in its distinctive appearance. For example, the dynamic potential is hinted at by the 20-inch 911 Turbo II wheels, which are not only larger but also significantly wider than the standard wheels on other models. And the metallic exterior paint colour, Palladium, that is available solely for the new model not only brings an air of exclusivity but also enhances the purposeful, elegant contours. New turbochargers and a higher injection pressure boost power by 50 hp A 50 hp increase in power compared to the Panamera Turbo engine has been achieved through specific revisions to a number of components. Two new turbochargers with larger compressors are fitted to the Turbo S, which increase the air flow and permit more air to be injected into the combustion chambers

at high loads and engine speeds. In addition, the injection pressure has been increased by 20 bar to 140 bar. Together, both of these measures also enable higher component loads, and this in turn has been compensated by pistons made from a new aluminium alloy and specially coated piston rings. The new Panamera Turbo S is available to order now from Porsche Centres in the UK and Ireland, priced from £131,049 with the first right-hand drive deliveries arriving in January 2014. The Panamera Turbo S offers a compelling mix of sporting and luxurious equipment levels. Standard features include Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with adaptive air suspension, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) Plus, 20-inch diameter alloy wheels, full leather interior, automatic climate control, Bi-Xenon headlights, Porsche Communication Management (PCM) satellite navigation system, DAB digital radio with Bose Surround Sound, Bluetooth telephone module with cordless handset, front and rear seat heating, rear passenger side airbags, a universal audio interface offering MP3 connectivity, and a three year warranty.

Safe car buying tips · Check your dealer belongs to the Retail Motor Industry Federation. This will ensure that the dealer is operating at nationally recognised high standards · Check your car has a V5C registration document and that the VIN number on the V5C matches the one printed on the vehicle (usually found on a metal plate in the engine compartment) · Spread the cost - most dealers offer good value finance and service packages to help ease that initial outlay. For

private sellers be wary of carrying large amounts of cash, don’t accept money transfer services and always meet in a public place - ideally at the address listed on the car’s V5C document · Know your budget in advance and stick to it. Research the value of your current car and the car you’re looking for in advance. Vantage has a free value checking tool on the website · Check for a valid MOT certificate – all reputable dealers

will be able to produce this along with service history · Take the car for a test drive – buying a car is a significant purchase and the only way to really know whether the car is for you is to get behind the wheel · Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions – better to be safe than sorry and a good seller should be able to answer all your questions · Don’t rush in – do your research and ask friends and family for recommendations.

£75m to build cars of the future Government launches fund to speed up development of green technologies for engines

Automotive companies are being challenged to come up with engine technologies that will make our cars more energy efficient and ultimately change the way we drive, Business Secretary Vince Cable announced this week. The £75 million fund will enable businesses to make and test low carbon technologies that will keep the UK at the forefront of engine design and help safeguard up to 30,000 jobs in engine production. They will be the pilot projects of the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), which was announced in July, and will channel £1 billion investment from government and industry to fund the development of new technologies over the next ten years. During a visit to Northampton on Thursday November 7th, Vince Cable also announced £1.5 million for a project that will test driverless cars in a pedestrianised area for the first time. The ‘pods’ will be able to carry two people and will be run on designated pathways in Milton Keynes city centre. It is planned that in 2015, an initial batch of 20 pods will be driver-operated and will run on lanes separated from pedestrians. By mid 2017, 100 pods that are fully autonomous will be running on pathways alongside people and will use sensors to avoid obstacles. The early collaborators on the project are engineering consultancy firm Arup, Transport Systems Catapult, The Automotive Council, and Cambridge and Oxford Universities. Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “By 2050, very few - if any - new cars will be powered solely by the traditional internal combustion engines, so it is important that the UK car industry is at the cutting edge of low carbon technologies. The Advanced Propulsion Centre, launched as part of our Industrial Strategy, will help to position the UK as a leading innovator while securing jobs and strengthening supply chains. “Driverless cars are another invention that has the potential to generate the kind of high-skilled jobs we want Britain to be famous for, as well as cutting congestion and pollution and improving road safety. ”The car industry has gone from

strength to strength – with one vehicle rolling off a production line somewhere in the UK every 20 seconds. But we must look at the long-term challenges and opportunities to ensure the sector continues to succeed and grow.” John Miles, Programme Director and Arup Consultant, said: “With the continually increasing number of people living in cities, city authorities are facing some real challenges with regards to ensuring future levels of mobility. This project has the potential to deliver a truly autonomous low carbon transport option within the context of a city centre and we’re delighted to be using this funding to take the project into the first stages of design.” The competition to find the pilot projects for the APC will be run by the UK’s innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board. During his visit to Northampton, the Business Secretary visited the Silverstone racetrack where he was given a tour of the University Technical College. The visit coincided with Tomorrow’s Engineers Week (#TEWeek13) – a campaign to promote the benefits of a career in engineering to young people across the country, particularly young women. The automotive industry is expected to recruit more than 7,600 apprentices and 1,700

graduates over the next 5 years. He also visited engineering company Cosworth as it announced plans to open a new facility to manufacture components for some of the world’s most advanced engines. The announcements came on the day the Deputy Prime Minister challenged industry and experts to put forward innovative ways to invest £500m to encourage more people to choose vehicles with the lowest possible emissions. In June the government announced that money would be made available to support electric cars and other vehicles that produce almost no carbon as part of its strategy to create jobs and boost economic growth, as well as tackling climate change and air quality issues.

POINTS: Force India driver, Paul Di Resta, has picked up 12 points in his last two outings

After a miserable run of form saw Force India pick up just three points in seven races, the F1 side are back on track after back-to-back points finishes in Asia. Nine points were gathered from drivers Paul Di Resta (eight) and Adrian Sutil (one) in their latest outing last weekend in Abu Dhabi, to further the six points registered in India the previous week. Paul Di Resta’s sixth place finish was his second best showing of the current campaign, and if it were not for a determined Fernando Alonso, FINISH: Di Resta clinched sixth spot last weekend

Sport

Flying high in Dubai

Force India continue resurgent run the Brit would have clinched his second top five finish of the season. Speaking after the race, Di Resta exclaimed: “It’s a great feeling to finish sixth and make the one-stop strategy work. I said yesterday (Saturday) that we had opted to set the car up more for the race and it really paid off today. “There were times when we had to be very quick and times when we had to manage the pace and look

after the tyres. Towards the end of the race I was battling with Fernando and Lewis [Hamilton], but it was impossible to hold Fernando back because he was on much fresher soft tyres.” He added: “The eight points are just what we needed and everybody in the team deserves credit for the big effort that has gone in this week. That’s two strong weekends in a row and we will move to Austin

determined to keep up the momentum.” Adrian Sutil’s single point proved to be the icing on the cake for the construction team as the 30-yearold German clinched tenth spot despite starting in 17th. A resolute Sutil added: “It’s not been an easy weekend with the problems I had during practice and qualifying, but the strategy today was the right one and we came

away with a point. I was running in ninth until the last lap ahead of Perez, but by that time I had done 27 laps on the soft tyres and it was very hard to defend because I had no traction out of the slow speed corners. “The points scored in the last two races have been very important for the championship position.” Two races remain this year, as drivers head to the States in a couple of weeks before concluding the season in Brazil on the 24th November.

READY: Khan ‘can’t wait’ for November bout

Haroon

Returns Khan welcomes Bulgarian challenger

Hot prospect Haroon Khan will step back into the ring in Blackpool later this month, as he goes toe-to-toe with Bulgarian challenger, Stefan Slavchev. The 22-year-old Bolton boxer will be looking to continue his unbeaten streak on 15th November at The Winter Gardens, as he aims to live up to the family name. The 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist has made a blazing start to his professional career after making the leap into the paid ranks earlier this year, scoring a win over the tricky Brett Fidoe before knocking out Vincente Medellin in a sensational performance in Atlantic City. As the younger brother of former unified world champion, Amir Khan, the talented super-flyweight possesses much of the same skill set, including his quick hands and thrilling combinations. He now goes into battle in his third fight against a well schooled opponent in Slavchev, at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, leading the lineup in a stacked card

that features no less than fourteen exciting bouts. ”I’m very pleased that my opponent has now be confirmed,” the super flyweight said. “Now I can start working on some specific things with my trainer Oliver Harrison in order to prepare for him. I know Stefan will be coming to get the win so I’ll need to be at my sharpest and make sure I’m ready. “Training has gone great and I can see the improvements I’m making all the time in the gym. I can’t wait for the 15th November because I’m ready to put on a great performance.” Steve Woods of VIP Boxing Promotions, added: “It’s great to have Haroon fighting on the card and we expect there will be a large contingent from Bolton making their way across to Blackpool next month. This card will have it all from top to bottom and it will be a great night of boxing.” Tickets for Haroon’s clash start from just £30 or £60 ringside. Scoring a success with Leeds’ Youth 30-year-old John Davison, a teaching assistant from the local Roundhay School and an avid football enthusiast, has run the Street Football programme in the heart of Leeds for over a year now, catering for almost 50 youths who just want to play football in the built-up city. With green spaces becoming more and more sparse, the idea to host street football contests came during the Hyde Park Unity Day. From that one-day exhibition, the events now occur every half-term whereby local children are gathered to contest for trophies and prizes. With the help of fellow coach, Havar Munir, the street side has kicked off over the last year and recently received vital funding to ensure a promising future. Speaking about his passion for sport, John said: “I love what I do really because it LEGEND: Sachin Tendulkar has one more Test left

If you would like to take part in the football tournaments, opportunities will be presented throughout the winter months. Hyde Park & Woodhouse FC currently hold futsal training sessions at the City of Leeds School’s sports hall on Friday nights during term time. For children aged between 11 and 16-yearold, the free activities begin at 4.30pm and finish at 6pm. Open age training is available straight after, between 6pm and 8pm, with a charge of £5 for adults and £3 for 16-18 year olds.

TENdulkar Sachin Tendlukar’s penultimate Test didn’t go exactly to plan earlier this week as the Little Master was bowled out for just ten runs. The 40-year-old approached the crease to a rapturous reception with his side on 57 for two and it seemed the scene had been set for Tendulkar to once again lead the Indian’s to victory. However, West Indies bowler Shane Shillingford had different ideas and did his best to disrupt the batsman’s rhythm limiting him to just 10 runs

from 24 overs. Tendulkar was bowled cheaply in the end, falling lbw to a Shillingford delivery that hit him high on the back pad. Despite the setback, India took control of the game as Rohit Sharma hit a century to guide a stuttering India side, on 83-5, back on track and up to 345-6. Despite playing 108 one-day internationals and 36 international Twenty20 matches for India, Sharma was making his Test debut this week.

Jogging Joginder surpasses massive milestone By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

RUNNER: Joginder Singh with his latest of seven New York Marathon medals

The New York Marathon is perhaps the most famous run in the world, and a local Bradford man has now completed the course an incredible seven times. More amazingly, he’s 61years-old. Joginder Singh, from Bradford, completed the US marathon last weekend, alongside more than 50,000 other runners. His time of four hours, 27 minutes and 27 seconds saw him complete the grueling 26-mile test in 27,736th position and clinch his latest of 255 medals. “My favourite run is the New York Marathon,” he said. “I like the fact that there are so many people all gathered together for this one thing and I also love the actual city.” In total, the avid runner has covered more than 3,250 miles over the past 20 years with a mixture of half-marathons, marathons and doublemarathons completed. He has raised thousands of pounds for charities and become a local legend for his epic collection of medals, gathered from across the globe, in places such as India, the US and France. His longest test to date was a 52-mile doublemarathon in the Punjab,

India, which he completed three times in the late 1990’s. Now, more than 15 years later, Mr Singh has more enthusiasm for running than ever before and has his sights set on the big 500 for his next goal. “I have just passed 250 which made me very proud and I have no plans of stopping now,” he said. “Up next is 500 and I will make it to that number.” The East Bowling resident spoke of how he only took up the ‘hobby’ when he was 40-years-old yet now couldn’t imagine his life without running. He added: “I have always liked walking but only started running after my friend suggested it. I thought ‘I can’t do that’ but gave it a go anyway and have just never stopped since then. “I find it easy to run for such a long time; I don’t get tired and just enjoy it every time. I have run all over the world and been lucky enough to meet so many wonderful people.” Mr Singh’s next challenge will be a 26mile round trek from Bradford to Huddersfield and back, which will commence later this month and is COLLECTION: Joginder has more than organised by the Sab Rang Radio station. 250 medals from across the world
