A brave fundraiser from Huddersfield took to the skies last weekend as he conquered his fear of heights, embarking on a 15,000ft plunge for charity. 39-year-old Satnam Singh decided to undertake the fundraising mission of parachuting out of a plane in hope of raising money for Kirkwood Hospice. The local charity had cared for the father-of-two’s aunt during her final days and Satnam said he had wanted to give something back to a ‘very worthwhile cause’.

Glitz and Glamour evening sees Give A Gift fundraising initiative handover £28,000 to Yorkshire charities Yorkshire’s women came together on Saturday 8th November in order to raise funds for Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and Martin House Hospice – two charities working with terminally ill children and those born with serious heart defects. The sell-out event was organised by volunteers, as part of the Give a Gift Initiative. The initiative was set up last year by a group of local individuals and organisations who recognised the need for the Muslim community to play a wider role within mainstream society. The night saw over 300 people attend the Aagrah Midpoint Suite, Bradford, for a four-course meal and an evening of entertainment including a fashion show and an auction in aid of the two charities. Doctors and staff who work with children also attended to show their support while local women, including; the CEO’s of the two charities - Sharon Cheng and Angela Monoghan, took to the catwalk. One of the organisers, Rifhat Malik said: “We chose these two charities for the Give a Gift Initiative because of the incredible

work they undertake with seriously ill children which is something close to all of our hearts. “Many people from the South Asian community do not realise the scale of the support they provide to people within our community and this is our way of giving something back.” The fashion show was the last of six fundraising events over the year including a 5k charity run and a Zumbathon, all of which have helped exceed the £25,000 target set. Rifhat added: “It’s been a brilliant effort by so many of the Give a Gift team who have been working tirelessly for weeks to bring this event together. “We hope that the money raised will help them to continue to purchase revolutionary equipment, provide family support, and continue their great work with children affected by congenital heart disease and life threatening illness.” Sharon Cheng, CEO of Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, said: “We have worked with the Give a Gift Initiative for two years running now. Months of hard work and planning had gone into the event to ensure it was a success, and it paid off. As a charity, we are reliant on fundraising to continue our work and we are so grateful to everyone involved for their incredible efforts.”

Sarah Tarpey, Regional Funding Manager at Martin House said: “All of us from Martin House were thrilled to be part of the second annual Give a Gift Ladies Glitz & Glamour event. “The whole evening was a stunning fusion of fashion, cuisine and cultures, with the most exquisite clothing, dancing, singing and entertainment being presented by the Hamara hosts. “One third of the children accessing Martin House Children’s Hospice are from the Asian community, and so the fantastic £14,000 raised at the event will directly benefit West Yorkshire’s Asian children and families. “That amount will pay for our children’s medical supplies for almost a whole year, which is such a wonderful thing to have funded. Martin House are hugely grateful, and immensely proud to be supported by Give a Gift. Many, many thanks.”

The new development is being built on Wessenden Head Road, Meltham, HD9 5LR The council would like suggestions that do not resemble existing street names in the area and do not mention any individuals. It is preferred that the name relates to the local area. Any ideas should be sent to the Building Control, Flint Street Depot, Flint Street, Fartown, Huddersfield, HD1 6LG. Meals on wheels, course from horse

Police horses Ledston and Ilkley helped deliver a mane course to remember as part of celebrations for National Community Meals Week. Hazel Wood, 84, from Meanwood, received the special visit as Leeds City Council’s Community Meals Leeds team joined forces with West Yorkshire Police to recognise the vital role the meals service plays in the lives of local elderly and vulnerable people. Mrs Wood is one of more than 500 people around the city who have hot meals delivered by the team, who work every day of the year including Christmas Day. Many of their customers have no family living nearby, and a visit from a member of the team could be the only contact they have each day. As well as delivering meals, the team carry out a safety and wellbeing checks on every visit.

‘Quieten down’

Residents living at two homes in the city have had a range of sound equipment seized by Leeds City Council after ignoring requests to keep noise levels down to an appropriate level. As part of an operation led by the Leeds Anti-Social Behaviour Team (LASBT), a number of items were removed from eight St Michaels Terrace and 4 Burchett Terrace in Headingley, after student tenants living at both properties breached Abatement Notices issued previously following complaints of noise nuisance. Following a warrant of entry being granted by Leeds Magistrates Court, LASBT officers assisted by West Yorkshire Police entered the premises and removed items including televisions, laptops, games consoles, speakers and DJ decks. Tenants can apply to obtain the goods back after a 28 day period, but will be required to pay the relevant costs to the council in order to proceed.

Dyslexic author gets published By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A newly-published author, who had to overcome dyslexia to pen his first fantasy novel, is hoping to motivate children across Bradford to speak out if they are struggling in school. Hussain, from Nafees Bradford, has suffered from the reading developmental disorder all his life and struggled constantly throughout his childhood, yet never confessed the problem to his teachers. However, after suffering a fall at work last year and being told to rest for three months, the now 26-year-old decided to put pen to paper one more time in an attempt to ‘conquer his own Everest’. For 12 weeks, the aspiring author typed up more than 75,000 words and finally came up with his first draft by late February. The only thing missing was any punctuation, meaning a further two months worth of work was put in before a copy was eventually submitted to a number of publishers. “I always had an idea in my head for a story and when I suffered a fall at work, I thought I may as well give it a go rather than just sitting around doing nothing,” Nafees explained. “One day I just began typing away at the laptop and just wrote everything that came to my head. “At around April time, I finally submitted it and from there I was just waiting to hear back from anyone. It was a massive accomplishment for me personally to just finish the story whether it would be published or not.” Nafees explained how as time passed by, he began to lose hope that any publisher would be interested in his fantasy fiction, yet just as he was starting to forget about the story, an American company declared their interest. “I received a phone call from ‘AuthorHouse’ in America and they said they had read my story and wanted to help publish it,” he added. “I couldn’t believe it. The last time I had even spoke about it was in April so to hear something so long after was incredible. “It feels like climbing Mount Everest for me. From struggling with words to actually getting my story published.” Last month Nafees’ story ‘The Secret Life of a Training Wizard’ was officially released. The story follows a young boy, who must decide whether to pursue a career in the mines like his father and brother, or opt to venture into the world of

Following on from his success, the local writer is now working with schools across the Bradford district and plans to host workshops on the importance of speaking about dyslexia. “I have suffered from dyslexia all my life and in school I regret never speaking about it because I really struggled with words,” he said. “Now that I am older and can look back on my own experiences, I can see how much I would have benefitted from a younger age should I have explained my situation to my teachers.

“Hopefully, I can tell children about the importance speaking about any troubles they are having in school and get them involved in creative writing as well.” ‘The Secret Life of a Training Wizard’ is available to purchase now from Amazon and is also available as an eBook. ‘Birmingham Balti’ – Invented or inherited

City bids to protect iconic curry dish

DISMISSED: Mohammed Aslam MBE, Managing Director of Aagrah, said the ‘Birmingham Balti’ was unfeasible as he claims it was not invented in the city

We’ve all heard of the Cornish pasty, Jersey Royal potatoes and Stilton Blue cheese before, but the Birmingham Balti? Now that is a different matter. There is no denying the dish has a ring to it and there are certainly handfuls of evidence backing it up as a ‘culinary invention’ from the heart of the West Midlands. Yet, to ‘patent’ a curry, which has now become readily available across the world in an array of forms, is something which may be hard to comprehend for some, including a number of restaurateurs in Britain’s official Curry Capital, Bradford. The Birmingham Balti Association (BBA), on the other hand, want to protect what they see as one of the city’s most loved ‘inventions’ and have thus applied for a patent to ensure every Balti is a ‘Birmingham Balti’. Three years ago, an official bid was made to get the title officially registered as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed’ (TSG). A TSG is issued by the European Union to council and producers if they can show that their food or drink is produced, processed and prepared in a given geographical area using recognised know how. After a short opposition period in the hands of Intellectual Property office, the bid was handed over to the country’s bureaucrats. Ever since, the application has been passed forward and backwards on a

The balti dish is followed by pathans throughout the world as they believe it is their innovation. “It cannot be registered as Birmingham balti.” Likewise, Mr Amjad added that he didn’t believe Birmingham can legal recognition of the balti dish. He added: “First of all I BID: Andy Munro is spearheading don’t think the the Birmingham Balti bid

Brummie who has grown up eating curries. “I remember going out with friends when I was younger and tasting all these red hot curries before, one day, I had my first balti. “It was so different to what I had tasted and I had never heard of the dish before.” In the application a Birmingham Balti is characterised as ‘a dish cooked in a thin pressed steel pan which is fast cooked using fresh ingredients and spices which are added individually. The key characteristic is that the cooked dish is served straight from the traditional Balti dish in which it is cooked and from which it obtains its name.’

Mr Munro, a previous advisor to the Asian Balti Restaurant Association (ABRA), has researched the history of the Balti so far as to even publish books on the curry. Examples of the history include the alleged first recorded reference to the balti in July 1982, when an advert in ‘The Heathen’, a local newspaper, advertised the availability of Balti in a restaurant. A recent book of curries from around the world, split by country only, also mentions the balti in the section on British food. In it Roopa Gulati writes: “Having more in common with Birmingham than Pakistan, baltis are the star attraction for curry aficionados.” For Mr Munro, who has spent years championing the balti, there is no doubt in his mind that it is a ‘culinary invention’ straight from the Birmingham kitchen. “People are always going to argue about the origins of anything, but I am absolutely certain that the balti is a Birmingham invention,” he said. “When people enjoy a curry it really is a delight. For me, there is nothing nicer than enjoying a genuine balti and I think it’s extremely important for Britain to safeguard its culinary inventions.” In the UK, there are currently 62 protected food names, yet bids for such trademarks regularly take years to be fully considered.

Going down Satnam heads to the skies for charity

VIEW: The Yorkshire scenery was ‘incredible’ as Satnam came back down to earth

November 2014 - 2nd Edition READY: After waiting more than four hours for his jump, the time finally arrived at 4pm

So, after his initial ‘jump-date’ was postponed at the start of the month, the fundraiser headed out for his skydive on Sunday 9th November, to finally undertake the daredevil drop. After spending more than four hours on the ground, watching fellow fundraisers take the leap of faith, it was finally time for Satnam to fulfil his jump after a short briefing. “I was obviously a bit nervous at first but after seeing other people do the skydive it helped reassure me that everything was going to be fine,” he said. “I remember glancing over the edge before the drop and the instructor told me to just put my hands on the harness and then we were off. “It was actually very exciting and once we were off, I really enjoyed it.” He added: “It was a really clear day as well, so when I was on my

way down the scenery was incredible. I could see the Humber Bridge and River Humber, even if they did look tiny from the sky.” In total, Satnam raised more than £3,000 through fundraising, with a large contribution from his work, the Marsh-based Mann and Associates. With donations still coming in, the local consultant added that he would like to see people follow in his footsteps and help raise vital funds for the charity, in any way they can. “This was a great experience for me and hopefully it will inspire other people to do similar initiatives as well in the future,” he added. “Thank you to everyone who helped me pass the £3,000 mark, it is really appreciated and I will be keeping my feet on the ground now until Christmas.” Kirkwood Hospice fundraiser Dawn Walker also thanked Satnam for his fundraising efforts which are vital in helping to fund the hopsice’s day-to-day running costs. She said: “We really appreciate Satnam getting behind our Make a Difference Day campaign. “He has raised a fantastic amount for the Hospice already and is still fundraising. The fact that he is facing his biggest fear makes his efforts even more special. “Without the wonderful support of people like Satnam, we simply couldn’t continue to provide our services for the people of Kirklees.”

Gripping digital art installation presenting stories from Muslim women

Veil

The long-running argument about full-face veils has called for a national debate by the Home Office Minister Jeremy Brown – but do we really need one? An inspiring and unique intergenerational, national piece of work, which features a range of Muslim women’s voices will be showcasing a digital art installation in Leeds this weekend on this subject. Mama Quilla - a predominantly female, culturally diverse theatre company that creates and performs

work about female focused issues of the day and brings ‘Veil’ to the Holbeck Underground Ballroom (Hub) on Saturday 15th November. While protecting the identities, ‘Veil has researched the lives and stories of women from Leeds, Bradford , Manchester and London. It reveals the depth and subtleties very often hidden from the mainstream or non-Muslim viewpoint. Written by Kay Adshead, the project stemmed from the rising fact that many British Muslim

women had an urgent voice, which needed to be heard about their lives. The installation, which can be visited all day, includes three short live performances which allows the audience to step into the shoes of these women’s lives. Kully Thiarai has directed this installation, who decided to collaborate Shanaz Gulzar – a digital installation artist with a growing national and international recognition for making public interactions.

LEP Chair, Roger Marsh, and West Yorkshire Combined Authority Chair, Councillor Peter Box, met with the Deputy Prime Minister to officially sign the largest Growth Deal in the country, bringing £1bn of investment into the Leeds City Region. The Leeds City Region Growth Deal will support the LEP’s priorities to improve local transport links, accelerate housing growth and town centre regeneration, develop a skilled and flexible workforce, support growing businesses and build a resource efficient City Region. The official Growth Deal signing commits the government to devolving £573 million to the LEP and Combined Authority from April 2015 onwards. This funding will go towards a diverse range of projects and programmes that will contribute towards the LEP’s overall ambition to unlock the City Region’s potential to be the growth engine for the north and rebalance the nation. Deputy Prime Minister, Rt Hon Nick Clegg MP, commented: "I’m delighted to be signing such a significant Growth Deal to Leeds City Region today. It will lead to better transport, more housing and a major boost for jobs in the region. Devolving power and money to the North has been something I’ve been pushing for and this Deal is the perfect example of how local people know what works. It's all about building a stronger economy and a fairer society. "Signing this at the Northern Futures Summit is a fitting kick-start to a day of debate and discussion about how we support the economy in the North. By 2021, this Deal will

create at least 8,000 jobs and allow 1,000 homes to be built." Roger Marsh, Chair of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP), said: “This is an historic moment for the Leeds City Region as we officially confirm transformational devolved funding for our businesses and residents. These new powers and pounds will create tens of thousands of new jobs and accelerate economic growth across the entire City Region. "The signing of this deal confirms

the trust that government has in our region and enables decisions to be taken by the people who understand our challenges and opportunities. The LEP is ready to seize this opportunity and ensure that good growth is felt by all who live and work in the Leeds City Region." Leader of Leeds City Council and WYCA member Councillor Keith Wakefield added: "This landmark deal is testimony to the strength of partnership between the Combined Authority and the LEP. It paves the

way for us to develop the investment, infrastructure, housing, training, skills and jobs we need to improve people's lives and for the economy of the Leeds City Region to start the process of fully realising its immense potential." By 2021, this Growth Deal will bring to Leeds City Region at least 8,000 jobs and up to 1,000 homes. It will also see at least £340million investment in the Leeds City Region economy from public and private partners.

Alongside this Growth Deal funding is a further £420m of devolved funding for the West Yorkshire plus Transport Fund which will enable a £1bn programme of investment in the local transport network over the next 20 years, creating further new jobs and improving connectivity for local residents and businesses. Other key areas of investment include strategic housing and development projects in Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield, York, Halifax, and Skipton to create good quality, affordable homes. Further investment in LEP’s highly successful grant funding programme, which has already provided over 300 local businesses with the finance they need to invest, expand and create over 3,000 jobs. Funding for further education colleges and training providers that will support engineers, manufacturers and other sectors and ensure a world-class learning environment for young people. Also to follow is an investment to create a resource efficient City Region, including a business support programme to help SMEs reduce energy costs and increase productivity and BioVale, a biowaste innovation cluster in York supporting firms to develop commercially viable biotechnology. The signing of this historic deal comes as devolution of further powers and funding to the North is being discussed at the government’s Northern Futures summit, which is taking place in Leeds today. Working with government and all of the major political parties, the LEP will continue to develop plans that will bring prosperity to all.

Leeds Remembers Communities come together to pay respect, 100 years on

November 2014 - 2nd Edition

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Leeds’ range of diverse communities stood side-byside last weekend as two minutes of silence were held in remembrance of all the soldiers who lost their lives during the two World Wars. This year marked the 100year anniversary since the start of the First World War and a processions was held in the city from Civic Hall to Victoria Gardens. A number of wreaths were laid at the site, including one by the Lord Mayor on behalf of the people of Leeds, and one on behalf of the Sikh community by Balbir Singh and Surjeet Singh. The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor David Congreve said before the occassion: “Remembrance Sunday is an incredibly important day, where we can remember those people who made the ultimate sacrifice during times of conflict. “The sacrifice that they made for us should never be forgotten, and it is especially poignant this year as we

reflect on and mark the beginning of the First World War one hundred years ago.” Also in attendance on the day were hundreds of exservice men and women plus members of ex-service organisations and current serving military organisations, who formed up outside Leeds City Museum before marching to the war memorial. Amongst those joining the Lord Mayor in the parade was LordLieutenant of West Yorkshire Dr Ingrid Roscoe. The service was led by Canon Charles Dobbin and included readings from different faiths as well as a reading of the John McCrae poem ‘In Flanders Field’ to commemorate the start of the First World War 100 years ago in 1914. As well as wreaths and the traditional paper poppy, a range of stakes were also planted in the ground on behalf of different faiths. A wooden cross (Christianity), crescent (Islam), star (Judaism) and Sikh Khanda, were all seen.

On the 100th anniversary of the first ever Victoria Cross being awarded to a soldier from the Indian Army, Sepoy Khudadad Khan, Mr Jarvis has retold the story of the soldier who will be remembered this weekend. “One hundred years ago today, on 31st October 1914, Sepoy Khudadad Khan became the first Indian soldier to receive the Victoria Cross, this country’s highest award for courage on the battlefield,” he said. “Serving as a machine gunner with the 129th Baluchis, Khan’s regiment supported the British Expeditionary Force in defending vital ports in France and Belgium during the early months of the First World War.

Pig gelatine in flu spray is not just a Muslim concern A nasal spray vaccine will helps protect children from the flu virus and reduces the chances of them getting sick and missing time off school has been met with backlash from some Muslim parents. The fluenza vaccine, which is administered as a painless and quick spray up the nose, carries traces of pork gelatine. As Muslim parents became aware of the ingredients, complaints were made and some parents refused for their child to have the vaccine. Sparking accusations of insensitivity to Muslims, Jews and vegetarians, healthcare bosses have now been criticised for not providing an alternative to the ingredient. Despite some media outlets taking this as an opportunity to make this into yet another matter of a “Muslim vs the everyday normalities of

life” issue, it has not been highlighted that a great degree of research was done consulting Muslim and Jewish scholars. Over one hundred 100 Islamic scholars have agreed pork gelatine was permissible within a vaccine, as it was not being consumed orally. The World Health organisation has consulted with Muslim scholars and certified Fluenz as halal. Rabbi Abraham Adler from the Kashrus and Medicines Information Service, who has advised the government on kashrut issues has also affirmed that according to Jewish laws, there is no problem with porcine or other animal derived ingredients in non-oral products. This includes vaccines, including those administered via the nose, injections, suppositories, creams and ointments. The public health

service initiative has been rolled out this autumn to avoid children being sick and off school, missing valuable learning time. Keith Whittlestone, head teacher at Joseph Leckie School, said: “Pupils need to be present in school to be able to learn and achieve. “If they become ill, especially with something as serious as flu, they will miss valuable time off school, which will have an impact on their learning.” Many medicines, including vaccines contain traces of bovine and porcine gelatine. Gelatine is an essential ingredient to make the flu nasal spray vaccine effective. Many faith groups, including Jewish and Muslim communities, have approved the use of gelatin-containing vaccines.

APPEAL: Dr Gul-Nawaz Khan Akbar of Mumtaz Restaurant will be appealing the fraud charge later this month after being found guilty by a jury at Bradford Crown Court

Fraud verdict over ‘non-existent’ £100,000 set to be challenged The ‘driving force’ behind of one of Bradford’s most profound food businesses is set to appeal a charge of fraud later this month after being found guilty, despite never benefiting from any financial gain. Dr Gul-Nawaz Khan Akbar, of

Speaking about the case and his upcoming appeal, Dr Akbar said he was disappointed to see his business ‘targeted’ by a ‘fraud’ case which threatened to hamper Mumtaz’s reputation. “I feel that Mumtaz has been targeted in a case that even the judge described as ‘unfortunate’,” Dr Akbar said. “We have already invested in excess of £5million of our own funds into the project and will have to spend a further £1million before the development is completed. “This £100,000, which we never even received, was made available to us, and all I did was follow the instructions given to me. “We were trying to help the city benefit, by creating hundreds of new jobs, and this investment would have gone towards funding the development. “I feel like somebody has tried to make an example of us, like there is a hidden agenda to target a big name business.” The jury at the trial consulted for less than an hour before a guilty verdict was put forward, a time frame Dr Akbar and his

defence team argues was ‘clearly not enough’ for them to have considered all the evidence. “My family and I were truly shocked by the verdict after all the evidence was heard throughout the five day trial.” said Dr Akbar. “I am determined to fight on. “I am grateful to the trial judge who described this as a very unusual case and for stating that I am a businessman who …’through his own diligence and hard work, together with that of his family, had contributed a huge amount to the Bradford community and had created a business that Bradford was rightly proud of’. “We have 28 days to appeal the verdict and will follow it through however far we have to go.” Meanwhile, Recorder Hawks said: “I regard this as a highly unusual case because the fact of the matter is that you didn’t get the money.” “You did build the factory and we’ve all seen the structure that now exists and will no doubt carry your successful business forward.” Recorder Hawks added that it was ‘a great shame’ to see a businessman with such a background and with as much experience as Dr Akbar convicted of an offence of fraud.

‘Building Futures’ celebration A host of Bradford’s young enterprising talent were recognised at a celebratory event in Bradford last week following a project for 16 to 21-year-olds. Organised by Incommunities and UnLtd, the UK’s leading provider of support for social entrepreneurs, the Building Futures project supported 12 young people as they developed ideas that would make a difference to others in their communities. The young people were encouraged to develop projects that tackle local issues with mentoring support from staff at Incommunities and the community regeneration charity, Participate Projects, playing a key factor in helping turn their ideas into reality. The projects included running dance classes for disengaged youths on a Bradford estate, turning a neglected plot into a community garden for residents to enjoy, running employability workshops for vulnerable young people, and producing a book of personal stories to inspire people to overcome challenges in their lives. To help get their projects off the ground the volunteers were asked to submit bids for start-up funding, in total sharing £13,000 in small grants awarded by Incommunities and UnLtd. Steve Short, Director of Incommunities – Open Field, said: “The event was all about celebrating

the creativity and determination shown by these young people. “Thanks to the contribution and expertise of UnLtd, Participate Projects and Incommunities the young people have been able to embrace an entrepreneurial approach which will hopefully encourage others to play a more active role in their communities.”

“This project is just one example of how Incommunities is working to encourage more young people to get involved in improving the lives of other residents.” “This project is just one example of how Incommunities is working to encourage more young people to get involved in improving the lives of other residents.” The young social entrepreneurs were Lauren Adams, Laurence Kelly, Ubaid Fazil, Khayyam Bhatti, Conor Healy, Aqib Munir, Terri Schofield, Aisha Saddique, Noor Uddin and a team of three, Summayah Khalil, Lorretta McIntosh and Rozina Tariq.

Stoptober Success

Over 1,750 smokers across the Bradford district stubbed out their cigarettes last month for Stoptober, the 28-day stop smoking challenge from Public Health England, which ran during the month of October. They joined over 250,000 people around the country swapping their fags for gags in the nation’s biggest mass quit attempt. New statistics from Public Health

England this week reveal that smoking in the district now accounts for 22.6 per cent of the population in 2013 - down from 22.8 per cent in 2012. This year’s campaign had a comedy theme for the first time, to help smokers get through the difficult challenge of quitting, and over 250 organisations such as Asda and the British Army as well as football clubs and bloggers got thousands of people to stay smokefree for 28 days.

Aid worker beheading ‘backfired on IS’ The murder of aid worker Alan Henning ‘shifted Muslim opinion wholesale’ against his Islamic State (IS) killers, according to a Home Office anti-radicalisation worker. Sulaimaan Samuel, a national safeguarding mentor for Channel, the Home Office's scheme to prevent adults and children becoming involved in terrorism, said the orchestrated killing of the Salford taxi driver had ‘backfired’ on the extremists. The 47-year-old was beheaded by Islamic State militants in a video released on social media after he was captured in December while delivering food and supplies to Syrian refugees. Mr Samuel said: “The announcement that they were going to execute him, kill him - this

really did shift public opinion and it shifted Muslim opinion wholesale. “I would personally say to Alan Henning's family: do not think his death has been some type of waste because it hasn't, because his death at the hands of IS is the very thing that has caused the Muslim community to realise that what IS stands for is wrong and can never be condoned. “In Alan's death he has managed to save thousands of lives now and in the future of people who might potentially have been drawn into going out. He will be saving lives in the future. “What IS has done has backfired.” Mr Samuel added that the greatest threat from radicalisation

now came from online content, and those travelling to a foreign country or being influenced by a single preacher happened ‘much more rarely’. Fellow Briton David Haines was also executed by IS militants, following the murders of US journalists Steven Sotloff and James Foley, while another Briton, journalist John Cantlie, remains in the hands of the terrorist group, also known as Isis.

Building a future Students looks to construct a career

Following just one week’s work experience, a Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) student has laid the first footings for her future career by earning a construction industry level one qualification. Aditi Rajgopal, a lower sixth student and aspiring architect, spent a week last summer at BAM Construction learning about different aspects of their industry. The GSAL student impressed her host employer so much that they awarded her ‘Work Experience in the Construction Industry’, a level one qualification provided by Construction Youth Trust. BAM is known for working on high profile projects such as Leeds

Arena and, under its previous name HBG Construction, built a major extension at GSAL’s Alwoodley Gates site to accommodate additional pupils following the 2008 merger of Leeds Grammar School with Leeds Girls’ High School. Carol Shaw, education and community coordinator – northeast BAM Construction Ltd, visited Aditi at school to present her certificate last week. Praising the young student, she said: “At BAM we are keen to see more women entering professional careers in construction to address the current shortfall, and providing early work experience for girls is positive for future recruitment. QUALIFIED: Carol Shaw presents Aditi Rajgopal with her ‘Work Experience in the Construction Industry’ certificate

“Aditi was a pleasure to work with and she learned a lot about different roles in construction.” During her time on work placement, Aditi designed her dream house using architectural software Revit, studied health and safety issues including first aid, and spent time with different professionals at BAM’s Thorpe Park premises. James Veitch was Aditi’s head of year in year 11 and said the work experience will prove valuable in years to come. He said: “Aditi’s week at BAM was work experience at its best. “Through a range of organisational and practical tasks over the five days she saw all aspects of the company and what the world of work is like.”

A windy problem

A detailed design scheme aimed at tackling problems with high winds at Bridgewater Place in Leeds will be considered by councillors next week. Leeds City Council’s City Plans Panel is being recommended by officers to approve a complex scheme submitted by the building’s owners CPPI Bridgewater Place Limited to reduce the impact of high winds on pedestrians and traffic in the area. They are seeking approval for a solution that combines screens and

canopies- on the building itself and in the surrounding area- and a series of perforated ‘baffles’ described as being similar in design to aircraft wingsat least six metres above the road. It is revealed in the detailed report to councillors that the proposed solution is the result of testing of over 30 possible wind mitigation schemes, with measurements being taken at 70 different locations around the building to take into account 16 wind directions.

Busy Bingley Bypass

Road works on the A650 Bingley bypass, which were postponed last week because of bad weather, have been rescheduled by Bradford Council to take place this weekend 15th and 16th November. Resurfacing work will take place at Crossflatts Roundabout, Bingley, and for safety reasons, there will be road closures and diversions.

Cllr Val Slater, Executive Member for Housing Planning and Transport, said: “We realise this work will cause people considerable disruption but the work is essential and we would ask people to be patient or choose an alternative route.” Further work is planned at the Marley roundabout near Keighley, next weekend, between 22nd and 23rd November.

Caring for Bradford

Bradford Council, the local NHS and third sector organisations, are supporting national Self Care Week, 17th-to-23rd November, to help people take better care of themselves and their family members, especially during the winter months, when seasonal illnesses increase. Local activities are being held right across the district including Shipley, Keighley, Ilkley and Bradford to promote the Self Care message throughout the week. Self Care Week is a yearly campaign to raise awareness about the benefits of self care and what people can do to take care of their own health and wellbeing at home and to encourage more self care across communities, families and generations. Marilyn Foster, Chair of the Self Care Steering Group, said: “Self Care is so important to us all, as prevention of ill health is much better than having to find a cure. We all have things to do that are important to us especially over the Christmas period, so why not look now at what we can do to keep ourselves healthy.”

Unstunned meat ‘should be labelled’ By Tanya Shah

tanya@asianexpress.co.uk

Meat sold in British shops should be labelled to say whether the animal it came from was stunned at slaughter as many killed in accordance with religious rites are not, an MP has said last week. Conservtive party’s Neil Parish (Tiverton and Honiton) also asked the Government to look at ways to persuade Jewish and Muslim communities to stun more animals at slaughter. Mr Parish highlighted a report by the all-party parliamentary group for beef and lamb that he chairs, which called for research and demonstrations that showed animals can be stunned and their slaughter remain compliant with religious beliefs. For both halal and kosher meat, animals are killed by cutting their throats, often without pre-stunning them. Speaking before his Westminster Hall debate on the subject, Mr Parish said: "The whole crux of it is to bring about more animals to be stunned at slaughter and we are really trying to seek from the Jewish and Muslim communities ways in which we can stun more animals at slaughter. "In particular for large animals, and also whether animals can be stunned before slaughter or just after the cut. "I would also like just a clear label saying this meat

has been stunned at slaughter or not stunned at slaughter." A survey showed the vast majority of British vets believe consumers need to be better informed about animal welfare and slaughter methods. According to the British Veterinary Association (BVA), 94% of vets believe UK consumers of meat and fish should be better informed about slaughter methods. Just 11% of vets believe the public understands the difference between stunned and nonstunned slaughter.

Switched on It was another night to remember on Victoria Gardens last night, as the city’s Christmas lights were switched-on in front of an estimated 15,000 strong crowd. On hand to join the celebrations included last year’s X Factor winner Sam Bailey, former X Factor finalists ‘G4’ and an array of special guests and sporting stars, including Leeds United boss, Neil Redfearn, and players: Adryan, Mirco Antenucci, Chris Dawson

and Charlie Taylor. The Leeds Light switchon marks the official start of the city’s ‘Magical Leeds’ campaign which will provide a number of special events and activities including the annual Christkindelmarkt on Millennium Square. Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for digital and creative technologies, culture and skills said: “The Leeds Lights switchon event last night was

absolutely fantastic, and it was brilliant to see another large crowd join us on Victoria Gardens to begin the Christmas Countdown in style. “I would like to thank the council’s events team and all of our special guests for making the 2014 Christmas lights switch-on one of the best ever.” To find out more about ‘Magical Leeds’, please see www.magicalleeds.co.uk.

Disadvantaged primary school pupils in Bradford to receive £36 million boost in funding

www.asianexpress.co.uk Disadvantaged primary school pupils in Bradford are set to receive £36million to boost attainment, the Liberal Democrats have announced. The pupil premium funding for 2015/16 will help teachers support those children at most risk of falling behind their colleagues. It means primary schools will receive £1,320 for every pupil who has registered for free school meals at any time in the last six years. Since 2010, schools in Bradford have received a massive £87million in extra funding through the Pupil Premium. Evidence shows raising the attainment of pupils by the end of primary schools

Local

has a direct impact on future exam results. Bradford MP, David Ward said: “Every child in Bradford should be able to reach their full potential, whatever their background. “The pupil premium will provide extra money to schools in Bradford, targeted at the children who need it most. Investing money early in children’s education will help boost their grades at school and the whole class benefits when fewer children are struggling. “Teachers in Bradford do an incredible job, and I can’t wait to see how they use this additional funding to help all our children and young people succeed.” Liberal Democrat Schools Minister David Laws said: “In government, Liberal Democrats are building a stronger economy and a fairer society, with opportunity for everyone. “We have already protected school budgets, introduced the pupil premium and expanded early years education for the very youngest children. “This additional funding is another boost for schools in Bradford. Liberal Democrats are determined that teachers will continue to have the resources they need to give all pupils the best possible start in life, regardless of their background.”

Councillors set to approve multi-million pound investment in housing

Council tenants could soon benefit from home improvements worth £65 million if councillors approve a new set of standards for housing. Members of the council’s executive board are being asked to approve the Leeds Homes Refurbishment Standard when they next meet. Council homes across the city have already seen significant investment through the existing national Decent Homes Standard. The programme has replaced thousands of kitchens and bathrooms as well as other structural improvements, bringing properties up to a ‘reasonable’ standard for tenants. However, the council wants to go further with its own local set of standards that make existing council homes fit for modern lifestyles, focusing on making homes healthy and energy efficient. The standards will also include improvements to green spaces, parking, waste management and security so entire estates can benefit. If approved, the proposals would result in £65 million being invested in council homes in 2015/16 alone, with a long term plan to spend hundreds of millions over a 30 year period. The standards have been designed to keep up to speed with the latest developments in sustainability, new technology and to meet tenant’s aspirations for their own homes. The standards also look more broadly to bring about improved conditions across whole estates rather than just individual properties. Councillor Peter Gruen, executive member for neighbourhoods, planning and personnel said: “The Decent Homes Standard has allowed us to make massive improvements to people’s homes. It set out to bring properties to a ‘reasonable’ standard but with the new proposed refurbishment standard we can ensure that homes are warmer, cheaper to heat and healthier places to live. “The proposed standard also lets us look at estates as a whole and help drive change that will make people proud of where they live. “As well as knowing exactly what to expect, by building in flexibility to the standards, tenants can be assured that as times marches on we can continue to maintain their homes to the highest standard.”

National Langar Week For more than 500 years, Sikhs around the world have been preparing, sharing and eating food, known as ‘langar’, with the wider community. Now, as the nationwide need for foodbanks and soup kitchens continues to grow, seven days of awareness are being held to promote the concept to all people in need of a free meal. Langar is a term used to describe the free kitchen and food initiative that is served to visitors at a Sikh Gurdwara. A central part of their religion, the concept was designed by the founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in the 15th century, in order to uphold the principle of equality between all people regardless of their background. In Leeds, the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha (GNNSJ) is just one Gurdwara which provides langar to those who visit the site, 365 days a year. Operating an open door policy, any person, of any faith, is welcome to visit the place of worship for a free meal.

preach it. “Langar is a concept that can help people, particularly those who are homeless or socially deprived, and so we must help who we can.” Every meal served is suitable for vegetarians as to cater for people of all beliefs, including Muslim (halal) and Jewish (kosher), regardless of where the gurdwara is in the world. The central gurdwara for the Sikh faith, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and serve up to 50,000 meals a day free of charge and that number can increase to more than 80,000 during celebrations. Mr Sagoo said he does everything he can to ensure all people are catered for when they come to the door of the Beeston-based Gurdwara yet accepted that there are sometimes challenges to overcome. “Langar has been abused in the past with people who are perhaps drunk or on drugs coming to the gurdwara and being disruptive. “This causes a conflict, because as men of faith we need to show compassion, yet they cannot come in to the place of worship if they are behaving poorly. “Therefore, we invested in plastic boxes to carry food so now if someone comes to the door and is drunk or disorderly, we give them the food in a box to take away and eat. “We would still much rather people FOOD: A volunteer pours pasta into one of the huge preparation pans as they prepare langar

CHAIRMAN: Mr Sagoo from GNNSJ in Leeds

GNNSJ Chairman, Harbans Singh Sagoo, explained how important it was for greater awareness to be created to help people ‘struggling in society’. “Wherever you go in the world, a Gurdwara will provide a free meal when it can,” Mr Sagoo said. “In Leeds there are at least two that provide langar every day and we regularly have a diverse range of people coming down to use the service. “People are facing more and more problems now because of the economy and this has brought forward the concept of foodbanks. “We as the Sikh community want to let people know that the system of langar is available to them and by having this National Langar Week, we are attempting to create more awareness.” He added: “Our scriptures say that ‘where the spirit of God prevails, nobody should go hungry’ and we must practice our faith, not just

‘Put her on a rocket’

Galloway slams ‘ratfaced’ Hopkins

DISAGREED: George Galloway questioned why Katie Hopkins was not charged following her apparent ‘hate speech’ on social media

Controversial Bradford MP, George Galloway, has named Katie Hopkins as the one individual he would like to ‘save the world from’ and send to space on a rocket. Galloway, responding to a viewer question, of who would he like to see join the probe Philae aboard Comet 67P,said the television personality would top his list. “I agonised about some of my political enemies,”

Galloway said. “But I came down to someone who not everyone in the world will know - and they're the lucky ones. “Her name is Katie Hopkins,” he explained. Following comments made in regard to the ongoing situation in Palestine and Israel, Galloway questioned why The Sun columnist was not interrogated in regard to hate speech – something the

Respect MP had to endure after labelling Bradford ‘an Israeli-free zone’ earlier this year. If a Muslim had said the same, he argued, they would ‘already be under arrest’, adding: “We have laws against hate speech, against deliberately seeking to incite hatred which is usually followed by violence against any group of people.” The two Tweets Galloway

was referring to appeared on Hopkins’ Twitter feed on 10th November, initially writing: “Father beats his daughter with an iron bar. But he is a good Muslim, prays in his cell & attends the mosque. So that's all happy days then.” Before adding: “Palestinians busy knifing Israelis. 2 state solution my arse. Filthy rodents burrowing beneath Israel. Time to restart the bombing campaign.”

City receives trophy to round off ‘amazing bid’

HAND-OVER: Bradford Council Tourism Manager, Tricia Tillotson, receives the award from Curry Capital of Britain founder, Peter Grove

CHAMPIONS: The Curry Capital winning bid team finally got their hands on the trophy last weekend after being named as winners last month

Curry Royalty Crowned Bradford’s reign as the Curry Capital of Britain was cemented last weekend as the prestigious trophy returned ‘home’ for a fourth consecutive year. At an awards ceremony at Zaara’s Indian Restaurant on Sunday, the Bradford bid team, made up of members from Visit Bradford and local restaurateurs, received their official accolade from the organisers of the Curry Capital of Britain competition. Founder and organiser, Peter Grove, along with his wife Colleen, are becoming familiar faces in the city as they returned once again to hand over the trophy at an afternoon reception. Special guests also included the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Mike Gibbons, and Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe. Tricia Tillotson, Tourism Manager for Bradford Council, said it was great to finally receive the trophy after being confirmed as the official Curry Capital last month. “We’re delighted to welcome Peter and his wife back to the Bradford district to officially present us with the Curry Capital of Britain award for the fourth time in a row,” she said. “We know that this year’s competition was tough but we were delighted to learn that we had actually improved our score by nine per cent on last year’s marks.” Attendees at the event enjoyed a buffet of Asian finger food provided by Zaara’s, as well as complementary drinks, while enjoying the atmosphere inside of the restaurant. Ms Tillotson continued: “The awards event was a very special way to mark the occasion – no

other city or region has ever won the accolade of Curry Capital of the Year consecutively this many times – and to celebrate the hard work of our winning team. “It was a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon; celebrating success with good company, and of course, good Asian food.” Visit Bradford’s bid for the 2014 title included a number of

initiatives and activities, such as a series of poppadom challenges, an Asian afternoon tea and a healthy-style Asian cookbook created in connection with the NHS. The recipe book is available from Bradford Visitor Information Centre and is free to takeaway or a donation can be made to the Curry Tree charity.

Mr Hussain said: “We are trying to ensure organisations across Leeds and Bradford take advantage of this scheme, and, upon checking availability, we will provide accessibility whilst ensuring affordability. “The scheme has already helped thousands of businesses benefit yet many more are still able to sign up and receive the £3,000 voucher today.” The time-limited offer is set to expire on 31st March 2015, so be sure to sign up soon, or risk missing out on this no-strings attached opportunity. he world’s largest social media network, Facebook, is suing leading global law firm DLA Piper (along with other law firms) who represented Paul Ceglia in a previous claim where he alleged he was entitled to an 84% share of Facebook. Facebook was launched in February 2004 out of a Harvard University dorm room and is now worth over 200 billion dollars, has more than 1.3 billion users and the CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is one of the richest people in the world. It is therefore not surprising that Mr Zuckerberg has found himself party to many lawsuits over the social network’s founding. Convicted felon and fraudster Paul Ceglia brought a claim in 2010 alleging he owned an 84% stake in the company based on a contract prepared in 2003. However in April 2014, Ceglia was arrested by the FBI as they discovered the original contract had been contrived to include reference to ‘theFacebook.com’ (the company’s previous name) for the purposes of bringing a fraudulent claim. The original contract merely related to some web development for Zuckerberg on a separate project. Although Ceglia’s claim was consequently dismissed, and a federal grand jury indicted Ceglia, Facebook are not willing to let matters lie. They now want to hold Ceglia’s lawyers accountable too. Facebook have filed a lawsuit in New York alleging that DLA Piper, amongst others, conspired to bring the fraudulent lawsuit which was based on an implausible story and fabricated

evidence in order to obtain a lucrative settlement against Facebook. DLA Piper, who were only involved in the 4 year litigation for only 78 days, are not taking these allegations lying down. DLA’s Spokesperson emphasised that, “This is an entirely baseless lawsuit that has been filed as a tactic to intimidate lawyers from litigation against Facebook.” The crux of the claim rests on whether Ceglia’s previous legal representatives, Kasowitz Benson, who allegedly discovered the fraud, informed the other lawyers acting for Ceglia (including DLA Piper) of the likely fraud, but continued to pursue the matter regardless. Kasowitz Benson however ceased to act. DLA Piper, along with other law firms did later withdraw from the case but never disclosed why. Indeed, they may not have been able to disclose their reasons due to their duty of confidentiality owed to Ceglia and the rules relating to attorney-client privilege in the US. However as officers of the Court they are under a duty to disclose information to prevent a crime, or a fraud. The claim questions the ethical standards of the lawyers involved and will indeed raise issues of legal privilege. Facebook may have taken the world of social media by storm but can a powerful corporate adversary threaten the practices of legal attorneys? One thing is for certain, it will make lawyers think twice about bringing dubious cases and given the reaction of DLA Piper it may be a long time until this matter is laid to rest.

Gold smuggler in £4.3 million crime payback SMUGGLING: Chaudry Ali will have to repay £4.3 million of his criminal profits or face a longer sentence

The leader of a gang behind a £9 million gold smuggling plot, will have to repay £4.3 million of his criminal profits, within four months, or serve an extra ten years in prison. Chaudry Ali of Middlesex, was found guilty and jailed for nine years in 2012 for spearheading the fraud, after an investigation. To carry out the fraud, Ali recruited two couriers who would fly to Dubai, via Frankfurt, to collect large amounts of gold jewellery. The couriers would leave the UK in the afternoon, arriving in Dubai early the next morning. They would collect the gold then leave Dubai the same evening returning to Frankfurt, and meet Ali in an airside lounge. They would then swap bags – Ali leaving with the gold and the courier leaving with a bag of clothes. Both Ali and his courier would take separate flights back to the UK, passing through the European Union (EU) entry channel at UK arrivals. In case he was stopped by officers Ali carried forged paperwork, which claimed he was a legitimate VAT-registered gold trader who had travelled to Europe with the gold in his bag. As he hadn’t left the EU then no duty would be payable on the gold. During the investigation HMRC officers uncovered over 200 similar flights where it is believed gold had been smuggled into the UK using this set up. Kevin Newe, Assistant of Criminal Investigation, for HMRC, said: “Ali believed he had found the perfect fraud that was beyond detection, but he was wrong. “Our investigators uncovered the fraud and in addition to his current prison term he will have to spend an extra ten years in jail unless he repays crime profits of over £4.3 million within the next four months. “Our work doesn’t stop with sentencing – we will pursue criminal profits to reclaim them for the taxpayer and the UK economy.”

1. Avoid HOT water. Luke warm is fine, as hot water strip your natural oil's, which you need to help trap moisture and keep your skin smooth and moist.

2. Protect your skin with a good moisturiser as weathers such as very cold winters and the sun can damage the skin. Pritys 24/7 Cream is great for this.

3. Stay warm without cozying up to a fireplace or other heat source. Sitting in front of an open flame or other heat source can dry your skin. 4. Add moisture to the air. Plug in a humidifier.

5. Olive Oil. Clean off make up with cotton pads dipped in olive oil. It works on the skin as a moisturiser and adds a layer of fatty acids which don’t deplete the skin in any way.

Volunteers needed to give blood NHS Blood and Transplant is calling for more Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities across England and North Wales to make time this Christmas to give a gift only they can give and make a blood or platelet - donation. This Christmas more than 200,000 blood donors are needed to give a very special gift and help hundreds of thousands of patients. BAME communities are especially in demand as some rare blood groups and some blood disorders are more common among ethnic communities. For certain conditions, for example sickle cell anaemia, it is beneficial for patients to receive blood from someone with the same ethnic background. Last year 1 in 5 blood donor appointments were missed over the festive period putting NHS Blood and Transplant’s critical operation under unnecessary pressure. Jon Latham, NHS Blood and Transplant Assistant Director said: “Blood stock levels can drop dramatically over the busy festive

period as Christmas shopping, celebrations and extended public holidays mean giving blood slips off the nation’s to-do lists. “At this time of year many people want to give something more than material gifts. A blood donation truly is the gift only you can give and with one single donation you can save or improve up to three lives. “While people from all communities give blood, only 4% of blood donors who have donated in the past two years are from black, Asian or minority ethnic communities. However, 14% of people living in England and North Wales are black, Asian or minority ethnic. We would like to address this imbalance.” “Don’t worry if you’ve never given blood before - now is a great time to sign up and start giving.” Around 210,000 whole blood donations will be needed over the coming six weeks to supply hospitals across England and North Wales treating patients with cancer and anaemias, after accidents or childbirth

complications, and during surgery. And over the festive period 12,500 platelet donations are needed to help treat patients with cancer, serious blood disorders and those who have undergone transplants. Every blood donation is vital, but over winter months NHS Blood and Transplant particularly needs to ensure supplies of the universal blood group O Rh Negative which is often in short supply as demand is so great. We also need to ensure supplies of the rarer blood groups A Rh Negative, B Rh Negative and AB Rh Negative as these are vulnerable to shortfall. This year NHS Blood and Transplant faces extra pressure as Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall ahead of a weekend, raising concerns fewer donors than usual will get around to making life saving donations during the busy festive period. To book an appointment to donate and give the gift only you can give, visit www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 2323 to find your nearest session.

‘No return’

Britain to stop jihadists coming back to UK A new counter-terrorism bill, which will see any British national who goes abroad to become a foreign fighter refused entry back into the UK, has been passed by Prime Minister David Cameron. In an effort to deal with the number of jihadists currently fighting in countries such as Iraq and Syria, the new ruling will, accord to Cameron, ‘confront the threat at its source’. Airlines who do not comply with Britain’s ‘no-fly’ lists or security screening measures will also be refused access to land in the country. In August, the country’s security threat was raised to its second highest level due to the potential risks of Islamic State fighters returning to the UK from Iraq and Syria. Security analysts say foreign fighters in Iraq and Syria now number in the thousands. STRICT: David Cameron is enforcing the new laws in an attempt to stop British nationals returning to the country after fighting with jihadists abroad

Under the new powers, police are now able to take passports off suspects to stop them travelling out of the country and to stop British nationals returning unless they adhere to the correct security checks. The laws were first suggested back in September yet on Friday, Cameron confirmed they would be introduced ‘shortly’. Addressing the Australian Parliament in Canberra, ahead of the weekend’s G20 meeting of world leaders, Cameron said: “We have to deal with the threat of foreign fighters planning attacks against our people. “But as well as dealing with the consequences of this threat, we also have to address its root cause. And let’s be frank. “It’s not poverty, though of course our nations are united in tackling deprivation wherever it exists.

“It’s not exclusion from the mainstream. Of course we have more to do but we are both successful multicultural democracies where opportunities abound. “No, the root cause of the challenge we face is the extremist narrative. So we must confront this extremism in all its forms. We must ban extremist preachers from our countries. We must root out extremism from our schools, universities and prisons. Cameron also said that the country is working on tackling the ‘new and pressing challenge’ of getting extremist material taken down from the internet. “In the UK we are pushing companies to do more, including strengthening filters, improving reporting mechanisms and being more proactive in taking down this harmful material,” he said.

More grants for community groups

Youngsters are set to become community champions after Lancashire's Police and Crime Commissioner approved his latest round of Community Action Fund grants. Nelson FC in the Community will put its £2000 grant toward a scheme which aims to provide football coaching to a group of deprived youngsters in the town, and turn them into 'community champions' with the aim of reducing anti-social behaviour. The scheme, which will run for 16-weeks, is one of four projects which Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw has agreed to fund. Blackpool-based theatre company TramShed, Creative Minds in Blackburn and Skelmersdale Action for Youth (S.A.Y) have also been successful in their applications to the fund. The Commissioner said: "I am delighted to have funded four more projects which will benefit communities across Lancashire. "The aim of my fund is to make a real difference to Lancashire's communities – not just for those people involved in the projects, but also the wider community who will benefit from the positive outcomes these schemes aim to deliver. "I am committed to helping organisations which are striving to improve their neighbourhoods at grass-roots level, and are harnessing community-spirit to improve their local areas for everyone. This could be by tackling crime and anti-social behaviour, or by improving outcomes for vulnerable people. "I wish these projects the best of luck and I hope they make a real difference."

TramShed – based at Montgomery High School in Bispham - has been awarded £2,000 to fund an eight month project to deliver specialised workshops to children, young people and adults from minority groups, with the aim of staging an original production at the end. The group aims to tackle issues around disability discrimination and hate crime, and actively involve people who may not normally engage with the arts or be excluded from other activities for a variety of reasons. Blackburn-based Creative Minds has been awarded £1750 towards its Break Through project, which will deliver holiday activities for young people living in Highercroft – one of the most deprived areas of the UK. The scheme aims to offer the young people the chance to discover new activities such as martial arts, street dance and animation with the aim of reducing anti-social behaviour. And Skelmersdale Action For Youth has been awarded £2000 for its Get Involved in the Community project, which aims to provide activities for youngsters with the aim of reducing crime and tackling issues such as hoax fire service calls, ASB and alcohol misuse. The group will also encourage the local community to get involved in the activities in a bid to break down barriers and promote mutual respect between different generations of residents. Would-be jihadist funder jailed

PRISON: Amal El Wahabi was handed a 28 month sentence at the old Bailey last week for attempting to smuggle cash into Turkey

Wife of Syria extremist fighter sentenced to 28 months A British woman, who persuaded her friend to smuggle more than 20,000 euros (£15,800) in her underwear into Turkey to fund her jihadist husband in Syria, has been jailed for 28 months. 28-year-old Amal El-Wahabi, from North London, is the first person from Britain to be convicted of funding jihadists following a trial in August. She was sentenced at the Old Bailey earlier this week. The friend, Nawal Msaad, was found not guilty, having been stopped at London’s Heathrow Airport as she prepared to board a plane to Istanbul in January with the bank notes concealed in a condom.

Sentencing El-Wahabi at England's Old Bailey central criminal court in London, Judge Nicholas Hilliard said her drug dealer husband, Aine Davis, had clearly gone to Syria to fight with IS. “I am also satisfied that you knew he was engaged in violence with guns for extremist religious and ideological reasons and knew the money you were sending was destined for that purpose,” he said. Judge Nicholas added that the Davis had posted a picture of himself holding an automatic weapon on his WhatsApp social media account and also sent similar images to ElWahabi whilst he was abroad.

The judge accepted that the jihadist had the idea to transfer the cash and El-Wahabi had agreed because she was ‘infatuated’ with her husband, with whom she has two children under five. But he rejected calls to give her a suspended sentence. “You even contemplated taking your children to Turkey to be nearer their father, when it should have been obvious to you it was in their interests they should be as far away from him as possible,” the judge said. “He had no true regard for you. Any interest he had in you was only engaged when there was some advantage to him.”

PR boss suspended from driving

Muchch nahin to kuch nahin!

The London-based son of famous British Indian author Salman Rushdie has been convicted of drink driving after he was found asleep at the wheel of his BMW. Zafar Rushdie, 35, pleaded guilty to the charge last week and was banned from driving for 17 months and also fined 620 which he paid on the spot at a Magistrates Court. The PR company boss of celebrity talent company Rushide Media was on his way home from a drinks evening when he was discovered slumped over the wheel at more over twice the alcohol limit at the traffic lights 100 yards from his flat in Hampstead on 1st August. Rushdie was taken into custody, where a test revealed he had 182mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, against a legal limit of 80mg. Prosecutor Emily Maunders said officers following in a marked police car knocked on the window of his BMW X5 when the traffic lights turned green twice and the vehicle made no attempt to move. “The defendant was described as either being asleep or having a medical episode. They banged on the window and there was no response. They continued on four or five occasions. He then appeared to wake, confused and under the influence,” she said in court.

Bollywood celebrity hairstylist gives tips on how to maintain and style the perfect beard and moustache this ‘Movember’

Timing is Key There is a time when you first start to grow your beard where the hairs are emerging rather unevenly and you are not left with the most attractive of looks. Asgar recommends the best option would be to use an electric shaver to trim the longer patches of your beard so you are left with an even length across your face. This will slow down the growth of the beard; however it will improve overall appearance throughout the first few weeks.

Style

Throughout the year, beards have bloomed in popularity. Celebrities including George Clooney, Ben Affleck and Jake Gyllenhall have all showcased various styles of beards. Asgar advises that you make sure your beard compliments the shape of your face before styling it - not everyone can pull off the rugged ‘Tom Hardy’ bearded look! 1. Square - men with square faces should opt for styles that make their faces appear less boxlike and more slender. The best style for this facial shape is a light but all-over beard; this will mean you are constantly trimming your

beard with your electric shaver to ensure it stays a suitable length. 2. Round - in order to add Celebrity hairstylist Asgar Sagoo shape to the face, it is important to ensure the length (picture credit Javed Mohammed) of the hair on your chin is longer than the sides. Try to avoid bushy sideburns and keep the sides of the beard short. 3. Triangular - men with triangular-shaped faces tend to have very pointed chins. Having a longer, fuller beard will make these faces appear more masculine by adding weight along the jaw line and chin.

Essential Tools 1. Electric trimmer 2. Fine-toothed comb 3. Clear shaving oil 4. Small trimming scissors

Maintenance - Clean & Tidy

For those of you that have never grown a beard, it is vital to remember to keep it clean. Asgar highly recommends using a finetoothed comb to keep your beard smooth and free from tangles. Don’t forget to use shampoo and conditioner on your beard as its length increases, this will keep it clean and stop the beard smelling like damp hair. One of the most beneficial products that you should invest in is clear shaving oil, this will allow you to see what you are shaving and will ensure clean lines around your beard.

Prity’s Spa Skin Polishing Facial HAIR NAILS & BEAUTY

As the tickling famous saying goes “Muchch nahin… to kuch nahin” (No moustashe… no swagger), Asian men love their facial hair, and what better time than ‘Movember’ to really showcase it? As the best beards take patience, preparation and care, so why not follow this simple guide by celebrity hairstylist Asgar Saboo to help you get the perfect beard.

This will also sooth your skin in the early stages of growth, which Asgar advises will help with itchiness through the first few weeks.

Trimming

To neaten your look further, it is important to trim your neckline, upper cheeks and moustache lip. Men will usually trim their beard too much; this will lead to mistakes being made and shaving off the whole beard. Wait at least a month before you begin trimming as you are simply trying to shape the beard, not remove it.

Poor student drop-out risk is ‘higher’

Poor university students are more likely to drop out and less likely to graduate with a good degree, even if they started their course with similar grades to their richer peers, according to research. It suggests that those from deprived backgrounds may do less well in higher education because they did less well at school, and also that they may need more support while at university to make sure they leave with decent results. The study, published by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) analysed information on English students who began studying at a UK university between 2004/05 and 2009/10. Researchers found that in general, students from the most disadvantaged homes are 8.4 percentage points more likely to drop out of university within two years of starting their course, compared to those from the most advantaged backgrounds. They are also 13.3 percentage points less likely to complete their degree within five years, and 22.9 percentage points less likely to graduate with a first or 2:1. There are still "significant" differences even when a student's own grades are taken into account, the study found. Among students who began university with similar grades to take the same degree course, those from the poorest backgrounds are still 3.4 percentage points more likely to drop out of their studies than those from the richest homes.

National And they are still 5.3 percentage points less likely to complete their degree and 3.7 percentage points less likely to achieve a first or 2:1. The findings indicate that a key part of any measures to cut inequalities in the degree chances between the richest and the poorest students should be to "increase the attainment of those from the poorest families earlier in the school system," the study says.

57

differences in university outcomes by socio-economic background, a substantial proportion of which can be explained by differences in attainment earlier in the education system. "While improving the attainment of students from disadvantaged backgrounds at school is likely to aid their performance at university as well, we find non-negligible differences in university

Researchers found that in general, students from the most disadvantaged homes are 8.4 percentage points more likely to drop out of university within two years of starting their course, compared to those from the most advantaged backgrounds It also argues that the fact that youngsters from deprived backgrounds do less well on average at university than their richer peers, even when they have similar prior attainment, suggests that poor students may need extra support at university to enable them to succeed. Study author Claire Crawford said: "Our research highlights that there are large

outcomes between students from different socio-economic backgrounds at the same university, studying the same subject, who arrived with the same grades. "This suggests that universities may wish to focus on improving the progression and performance of students from disadvantaged backgrounds as well as widening access."

Double Delight Author writes her way to the top WRITER: Mahsuda Snaith’s life as a 33-year-old has been eventful to say the least, picking up a Leeds literary award on her birthday before receiving another accolade just 10 days later. (image courtesy of Barbara Evripidou)

A Leicester-based writer, who clinched a Leeds writer’s award last month, has twice the number of reasons to celebrate after clinching her second award in just 10 days. Mahsuda Snaith clinched the 2014 SI Leeds Literary Prize for her short story, ‘The Constellation of Ravine Roy’ after being alerted of her nomination on her 33rd birthday. The competition, which looks to award Black and Asian women for their works of unpublished fiction, was ‘brilliant’ according to Mahsuda yet the best was yet to come. Last week, the budding writer made it a double swoop when she was awarded the 2014 Bristol Short Story Prize, for another tale, ‘The Art of Flood Survival’, which tells the story of a Bangladeshi house girl. In order to receive the title,

alongside £1,000 in prize money, she had to defeat more than 2,400 entries in this year’s awards with writers submitting entries from 60 different countries. Mahsuda said she was surprised to have claimed the pair of awards so close to each other but was now excited to see her work published. “I’m a bit stunned by it,” she said. “I’m over the moon about winning especially because I’ve read the Bristol Short Story anthologies before, and [they are] always such good quality. “It’s amazing, I was just happy to be in the anthology. Winning is a massive bonus.” This year’s judging panel was chaired by writer and former BBC Radio 4 producer, Sara Davies, who was joined by literary agent, Rowan Lawton, writer, broadcaster and academic, Sanjida O’Connell and writer,

journalist and performer, Nikesh Shukla. Sara Davies praised the winning story and said: “Mahsuda’s story about a young Bangladeshi servant girl is tender and tough, and impressed us all with its sureness of touch. “The voice of its young narrator, with its mix of hope and cynicism, longing and pragmatism, is both believable and compelling, and her determination to turn the world to her advantage against all odds is beautifully and boldly explored with some lovely touches of sharp humour.” Elsewhere, Claire Griffiths, a graduate of UEA Creative Writing MA, won 2nd prize for her story, ‘Tata and Mama and Me’, whilst Tom Vowler, author of two novels and a short story collection, won third Prize with ‘Debt’.

COMMEMORATIVE: The plaque presented from the United Kingdom honours Pakistan’s First World War Victoria Cross recipients

WWI commemorative plaque unveiled in Pakistan The British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Mr Philip Barton CMG OBE, unveiled a plaque in honour of three soldiers from modern day Pakistan, who were awarded Victoria Crosses during the First World War. The ceremony, held on Tuesday 11th November, formed part of the UK Government’s programme of

events to commemorate the Centenary of the First World War, during which 175 men from 11 countries were awarded the Victoria Cross. Following the unveiling of the plaque, the High Commissioner and his Chief Guest, Pakistan’s Defence Secretary Lt. General (Rtd) Alam Khattak, laid a wreath in

remembrance of all those who had lost their lives in the First World War and those who have fallen in conflicts since. The plaque honours the bravery of Sepoy Khudadad Khan - the first South Asian and Muslim recipient of the Victoria Cross - Jemadar Mir Dast and Naik Shahamad Khan, who were all awarded Britain’s

highest award for gallantry during the First World War. A descendant of Khudadad Khan was among those present at the ceremony. Other guests included serving and former members of armed forces from across the Commonwealth and other countries as well as representatives from the international community. Community members from Dulmial Village, Punjab, also attended the event. Over 450 soldiers from this village fought in the First World War, the largest number from any village in South Asia. The plaque will eventually be placed in a prominent public area in

Islamabad, so that the stories of these heroes will become better known and enable younger generations to learn about our shared history and the extraordinary courage and heroism of those from their own country who fought during the First World War. Speaking at the ceremony the British High Commissioner, Mr. Philip Barton CMG OBE said: “I am proud to host today’s event in remembrance of those who fought so bravely during the First World War. As we honour Pakistan’s three recipients of the Victoria Cross, United Kingdom’s highest award for gallantry, we should remember the sacrifices made a century ago that helped shape our present world. People from different nations came together to uphold our way of life. Pakistan and the UK share deep and lasting ties of history and friendship; these ties are the bedrock of the strong relationship we have today. ” Foreign Office Minister for Pakistan, Tobias Ellwood MP said: “At this time of remembrance, I am honoured to pay tribute to the enormous contribution made by Pakistani servicemen during the First World War. Unveiling this plaque to mark Pakistan’s Victoria Cross heroes will ensure that there is a permanent memorial in Islamabad to remember all those who lost their lives in The Great War and all who have fallen in conflicts since.” A separate reception was held in Karachi on 08 November 2014, hosted by the British Deputy High Commissioner Mr. John A. Tucknott MBE. The Chief Guest, Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Qiam Ali Shah, was joined by more than 250 dignitaries from the Government, military, civil society, the diplomatic corps and the business community. The national anthems of both countries were played to mark this important occasion.

India sterilization horror The doctor who conducted the 83 surgeries claims that he’s at the centre of a government-led “blame game”. 59-year-old Surgeon Dr. RK Gupta has said that he’s been implicated in the case owing to pressure from the top and that the state administration should face the flak for not verifying the medicines. Dr Gupta, who carried out 83 laparoscopic tubectomies in six hours at Sakri camp in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district, denies negligence - saying the medicine administered may have been faulty. Their cause of the women’s death remains unclear. The surgeries were part of a state-run mass sterilisation campaign. Now the Indian police have arrested the owners of two pharmaceutical factories as part of the investigation into the deaths of 15 women after the mass sterilisation surgery. The two men were held on charges of destroying evidence which they deny. The results of the postmortem examinations of the 15 women who died in Chhattisgarh state have not been made public yet. Police raided the factory, which manufactured some of the drugs administered to the women who died after the sterilisation surgery on Thursday 13th November. A pile of ash was found in the building along with the remains of medicine packets. Ramesh Mahawar, the factory owner, who was arrested along with his son, told said that he was being "harrassed" and denied his medicines had any connection to

the deaths. All-in-all Dr Gupta and his assistant had carried out tubectomies on 130 women at two separate camps - government rules say one surgeon should only perform 35 operations in a day. Fourteen died after the first camp in Bilaspur and one after the second. More than 100

Surgeon says the government is playing a “blame-game” BLAMED: Surgeon Dr. RK Gupta, who reportedly carried out 83 laparoscopic tubectomies in under six hours at Sakri camp in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district, accused the state administration of not verifying the medicines which “led to the death of 14 women”

women are still in hospital, some of them in a critical condition Dr Gupta had been earlier feted by the state government for conducting a record number of sterilisations. He reportedly said he was put under pressure to carry out the operations and also accused the government of making him a scapegoat. Sterilisation camps are frequently held to carry out mass tubectomy operations for women - or vasectomies for men - and in some states, health workers receive money for each person they bring to a clinic to be sterilised. The vast majority who take part are women, often poor and paid to be sterilised. Female sterilisation works by sealing the fallopian tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the womb. This can be done using clips, clamps or small rings or by tying and cutting the tube - this stops the egg and sperm meeting, so pregnancy can't occur. Eggs will still be released from the ovaries as normal, but they will be reabsorbed by the body instead. The procedure can be carried out via keyhole surgery or through an abdominal operation. It is very effective and straightforward when carried out correctly and by a highly trained professional. But it is not without risks. Most doctors will try to use the least invasive method. It requires an anaesthetic and there is a risk of damage to other organs during the procedure. There can be bleeding and infection too. It should also be considered permanent - it is difficult to reverse.

• INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS UAE lists over 80 Muslim 'terrorist' groups

The United Arab Emirates, which belongs to a US-led coalition fighting jihadists, has issued a list of 83 Islamist groups, which it classified as "terrorist organisations". The list, approved by the cabinet and published on the official WAM news agency, is similar to an announcement made by Riyadh in March. It blacklists Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS), as well as the Muslim Brotherhood and Yemen's Shiite Huthi militia. The UAE has jailed dozens of Emiratis and Egyptians for forming cells of the Brotherhood, outlawed in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which accuses the movement of seeking to overthrow the Gulf monarchies. On Saturday, the UAE named the Qatar-based International Union of Muslim Scholars which is headed by the Brotherhood's spiritual guide Sheikh Yusuf alQaradawi on its terror list. From inside the Gulf state itself, the list names Al-Islah (reform) Society, dozens of whose members have been jailed, and the previously unknown "UAE jihad cells." Shiite Hezbollah in the Gulf states and brigades with the same name in Iraq also figure on the list, but not Lebanon's powerful Iranian-backed militant

group Hezbollah. Several brigades fighting on both sides in the Syrian conflict along with Islamist groups in Libya, Tunisia, Mali, Pakistan, Nigeria's Boko Haram as well as Afghanistan's Taliban account for the bulk of the list. Fifteen Islamists accused of joining and financing AlNusra Front, Syria's AlQaeda franchise, and Ahrar al-Sham, another Syrian rebel group, went on trial in the UAE in September. The UAE has been taking part in US-led air strikes against the IS group in Syria, along with fellow Arab states Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The Emirati list also includes the Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe, as well as Muslim associations in Britain and other European countries. The oil-rich Arab monarchies of the Gulf have not faced the widespread protests which have swept other regional states since 2011. But authorities have cracked down on dissent and calls for democratic reform, drawing criticism from human rights groups. Those mainly targeted have been Islamists. In August, the UAE toughened anti-terrorism laws in a bid to stamp out terror financing, hostagetaking, human trafficking and money laundering.

Guru Nanak birth anniversary celebrated at White House The White House recently celebrated the 545th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev by inviting members of the Sikh community from across the US and hosted a 'langar' for them. Tina Tchen, Special Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to the First Lady, conveyed the greetings from the First couple and said: "I had the privilege of working with the Sikh community since I have joined the White House and I would like each one of you to stay in touch with us." President Barack Obama had issued a statement on the day of Guru Nanak's birthanniversary last week congratulating the Sikh community. Congressman Mike Honda from California, who fought a fierce election battle to be re-elected, joined the celebrations. He reflected on the importance of the day and said: "What Guru Nanak taught is very much relevant today. Your community has a glorious history in America and you have contributed immensely to this nation." Honda congratulated Jaskeerat Singh, the

first full-fledged police officer hired in California with his full Sikh identity, whose brother Ravi Singh was in the audience. He also honoured the first Sikh American congressperson, Dalip Singh Saund, who is also the first Asian American to be elected to Congress. Honda spoke about issues of bullying that Sikh youth experience and his efforts to make sure no child is discriminated against. He added: "We need to make sure that we hire Sikh teachers in the school systems to increase diversity which would also help in creating awareness about Sikh faith and Sikh culture." The event included a kirtan followed by a musical presentation by young musical stars among Sikhs. They presented a number in Raag Bageshri, enthralling the audience with their engaging performance. Simran Jeet Singh, PhD candidate at Columbia University and senior fellow at the Sikh Coalition delivered the keynote speech. Singh spoke about the influence Guru Nanak's words has had on his own life and how the teacher's wisdoms on equality and service to others ring true today.

Shiites in fear as deadly bigotry spreads Shiite Muslims from Australia to Nigeria, from Britain to Indonesia, are increasingly the victims of intimidation and even violent attacks from fellow Muslims as hardline Sunni ideologies gain an ever more global reach. "The rise of anti-Shiism or Shia-phobia, is quite concerning to Shiite communities living in the West, and the Internet, Youtube, Twitter and Facebook play a big role in promoting these hate messages," said Yousif alKhoei, a prominent Shiite community leader in London. Khoei, a director of the AlKhoei Foundation, a charitable and educational organisation, said there had been an increase in threats in Britain including against himself and has called for greater police vigilance. Last year he helped Shiite victims of a violent attack by Islamic radicals, which the British press dubbed the "first case of Muslim sectarian violence in Britain". This year low level intimidation continues, Khoei

said, particularly at some universities, where there have long been concerns over infiltration by Islamic radicals. In Australia, a Shiite community leader was shot in the face outside a prayer hall on November 3, reportedly hours after passers by had shouted "Shiite dogs" and had threatened to return to carry out an attack. In Nigeria, where attacks on Shiites are relatively rare despite widespread violence between Christians and Muslims, a suicide bomber killed 15 people at a Shiite ceremony, while in Vienna, a Shiite mosque was evacuated after a bomb threat. And in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim state, an "Anti-Shia Alliance" led by hardline Sunni clerics this year held its first national convention. The great majority of the world's Muslims are Sunni, and the schism with Shiite Islam dates back to a 7th century dispute over who should succeed the Prophet Mohammed. Sunni jihadists at the heart

of the current anti-Shiite campaign claim Shiites have to pay for the bloody repression of Sunnis by Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, a member of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiism. Assad's backing by Shiite Iran and Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah movement has added to the vitriol. Andrew Hammond, Middle East analyst at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said that the spread of smartphones and social media had given anti-Shiite sentiment global reach. "I definitely think we're seeing a wave of anti-Shiite bigotry... It's obvious to see in recent years the readiness within the Sunni mainstream to take anti-Shiite positions which would not have happened before," he said. "It's reaching places that you wouldn't imagine. Pakistan, Britain, Malaysia, Indonesia. It's really quite a striking phenomenon." Satellite TV channels, believed to benefit from support in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states, feature inflammatory preachers labelling Shiites grave worshippers, justifying their slaughter as heretics. Most mainstream Sunni leaders condemn Sunni extremist groups, but that has done little to stem anti-Shiite bigotry.

Americans suspected of trying to ship baby body parts flee Thailand

INTERCEPTED: A tattoo expert and a policeman point at one of the pictures of body parts found in parcels as they address reporters in Bangkok

Thai police have said two Americans suspected of trying to send infant and adult body parts in parcels to the United States had fled the country. A baby's head, a baby's foot sliced into three parts, a heart and a "sheet of skin" with tattoo markings were found in parcels on Saturday after staff at a shipping office in Bangkok scanned the packages, police said. The parts were stored in plastic containers filled with formaldehyde and the packages were destined for an address in Las Vegas. "X-rays showed there were contents similar to human body parts. From our investigation of three parcels we found human body parts in five plastic containers," Police Lieutenant General Ruangsak Jaritake, assistant to the National Police Commissioner, told reporters. "The packages were marked 'children's toys' but xrays showed they were not children's toys." Police named the two suspects, aged 31 and 33, and said they were being "monitored", but did not say how. Both men fled Thailand through a checkpoint in the east of the country, Ruangsak said. He said the heart had stab marks and belonged to an adult while the sheet of skin with tattoo markings also belonged to an adult.

Four arrested over woman’s gang-rape ordeal in Delhi

In yet another case of crime against women in the national capital, a 30year-old woman from Assam was gang-raped by four of her neighbours in the Mundka area here. According to a complaint lodged by the rape survivor, the victim has named the main accused and three others, saying that she was being harassed by them for rejecting their advances after her husband's death. The women was reportedly living alone in the area.

Meanwhile, taking a quick action, police have arrested the main accused and three others involved in this heinous crime. A case of gang-rape, house trespass and other relevant sections has been registered and further investigations are underway, police said. The victim is a native of Assam and was assaulted on 8th November. A case was registered after the victim was released from the hospital.

"As soon as we have results, we will contact the FBI," he said. Doctors at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital said that the body parts were taken from the hospital's Medical Museum, nicknamed the Museum of Death, which exhibits preserved human remains, many of them from murder victims. "We can confirm that they were stolen from Siriraj," Udom Kachintorn, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, told reporters. He added that the two Americans visited the museum last month. In 2012, Thai police arrested a British citizen of Taiwanese origin after discovering six human fetuses which had been roasted and covered in gold leaf stuffed into travel bags at a hotel room in Bangkok's Chinatown. Thai detectives said they believed the corpses were due to be sent to Taiwan to be used as part of a black magic ritual.

Kajol Third time unlucky?

After two failed comeback attempts, Kajol got a third chance when hubby Ajay Devgn bought the rights of the 2014 Malayalam hit ‘How Old Are You’. The actress who has

been on a break since the birth of the couple's son, Yug, in 2010, was to topline the cast of its Hindi remake. According to a report, the hitch is that Ajay wants a Bollywood director to helm the project, while the director of the original, Rosshan Andrrews has a clause in the contract with the film's producer Listin Stephen, which gives him the 'first right' to direct its remakes. Andrrews even met Ajay and they discussed this issue before he flew off to Canada last week, the report said. Gossip has it that Ajay wants Ashwini

Dheer, who directed ‘Son Of Sardaar’, to wield the megaphone, and so now there’s a rift. It’s doubtful that Kajol will be in this film now. Earlier, Kajol was set to return to the big screen with a film which was an Indian adaptation of the Dutch TV series Penoza. Prior to that, the actress had considered Rensil D'Silva's 27episode fiction show, which revolved around a single mother living in a joint family in Delhi. But the actress demanded too high a premium, which the channel wasn't willing to cough up.

Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh, Suresh Babu are also sent invitations. It is reported that Salman has invited (former foe) Shah Rukh Khan and SRK has come out to say that he didn’t need a formal invitation, as he’s known Arpita since she was a child. A source said: “Shah Rukh and his wife Gauri are very fond of Arpita. They don’t deny her anything.”

Ranbir Kapoor has moved in with his girlfriend and Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif and the word on the street is that Ranbir has left his parents, Neetu and Rishi Kapoor. However, Ranbir claims that he is not shifting his address permanently. The ‘Barfi’ actor claims that due to some construction work going on at his ancestral bungalow Krishna Raj, he has shifted and not because he wants to live separately from his parents. "Yes, I am shifting but it is just a temporary thing as there is some construction going on in my house to expand it. “I will be moving out in a few days," Ranbir said at the launch of the new advertisement campaign of Tag Heuer. The couple always maintained that they are just good friends but never came open about their relationship. When their private holiday picture at Ibiza beach, Spain circulated, the couple maintained a dignified silence and refuse to admit that they are

lovers. But the gossip mill is churning that all is not well in RanbirKatrina’s paradise. During the recently held birthday party of Nitasha Nanda the internal tension among them came into forefront. Neetu Kapoor uploaded a picture from the party which has Ranbir and other family members in the frame and chopped Kat’s image off! (HAAAW!!!) In the original photo, Katrina was also in the frame but standing behind Neetu and Ranbir, whereas Katrina is trying her level best to keep a good relationship with her future inlaws. When Rishi Kapoor fell sick, the actress rushed to Krishna Raj to inquire about Rishi Kapoor’s health as soon as she landed in Mumbai.

“SRK didn’t slap my husband” says Yo Yo Honey Singh’s wife

Rapper King Yo Yo Honey Singh was supposed to join Shah Rukh Khan’s SLAM tour but he stepped back at the last minute. This gave fire to the rumor that King Khan entered into a brawl with Honey Singh and out of rage he had slapped Honey Singh. But the singer's wife Shalini clears the air on SRK slapping her husband. Shalini claimed that her hubby is unwell and he was advised bed rest by doctors for two months and so he missed out the SLAM tour. She further said overwork had taken a toll on Honey’s health and was advised medication and complete rest. Shalini also said that false news often breaks down Honey Singh. Shalini said SRK treats Honey like a younger brother: “Doctors had advised Honey not to travel out of the country for the Slam tour but he had given his word to Shah Rukh Khan, so he went with him. “However, on seeing his condition, bhai kept telling him to take it easy and not to perform if he wasn’t being able to. Bhai asked Honey to take care of his health. He was very understanding.” Shalini who made her first public appearance on India's

Ash to romance Aamir Khan?

For the first time Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be teaming up with perfectionist Aamir Khan, according to whispers. It’s going round that they’ve both been roped in by ace filmmaker Karan Johar. Previously, everytime Karan had approached Ash to star in his film, things didn’t work. Karan is close to the Bachchan family and possibility is high that Ash might sign her next film with Dharma productions. According to a close source, Ash has finally given her nod to the Dhrama film but there has been no such official confirmation. A source has been quoted as saying: "Aishwarya has never worked with Dharma Productions - a film company founded by Karan Johar’s father – Yash Johar and now run by Karan. “She was supposed to do ‘Dostana’, but at the time she felt that the audiences would not accept her walking away with another man (Bobby Deol) when Abhishek was courting her in the film.” The source revealed that Karan Johar has offered a film to Ash with Aamir in the lead. Aamir and Aishwarya have never been together except for one scene in Dharmesh Darshan's ‘Mela’. Karan always updates his fans about his forthcoming film and announce the cast and the crew on the social networking sites but he has shared nothing about this piece of news till now. Aishwarya also hinted in an interview that apart from ‘Jazbaa’, she has given her nod to few more movies. Well, wee are sure that Aishwarya and Aamir’s pairing will take the silver screen by storm.

Rawstar said her husband is recovering now, on being inquired about the slapping rumor, she told to a leading daily: "Why would he slap him? These are all imaginary stories. Yeh toh sabko pata hai that Honey really respects Shah Rukh bhai, and bhai also treats Honey like a younger brother. In fact Shah Rukh bhai helped and supported us a lot”. She further said, "On the tour, Honey was on heavy medication for his BP, and he slipped and fell during the rehearsals and injured his back and head. He was thus forced to come back home. So, Shah Rukh bhai hitting him is just a big rumour." Shalini who is a chartered accountant married the rapper king in 2001.

The makers of The Shaukeens knew that getting Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Piyush Mishra with the dusky Lisa Haydon and having Akshay Kumar in a special appearance in their naughty comedy would evoke laughter from the audience. Maybach is back!

Daimler says it will relaunch its flagship the Mercedes Maybach Daimler (DAIGn.DE) has said it will launch new top end versions of its Mercedes-Benz SClass, including a sports utility vehicle and a high-end luxury limousine adorned with the Maybach brand. Daimler, which owns the Mercedes-Benz brand, said it would unveil the new MercedesMaybach S 600 limousine at the Guangzhou Motor Show and Los Angeles Auto Show this month. It'll be 200mm longer than a long wheelbase S-Class offering more space than the old Maybach 57 model. In 2012, Mercedes-Benz

stopped making Maybach limousines after the vehicles, which were based on a unique design and costing around £230,000, failed to sell heavily enough. At the time, Maybach vehicles were marketed as a separate brand from Mercedes-Benz. Among the owners were rap stars, oligarchs and royals including Russia's Roman Abramovich, musician Jay-Z and King Juan Carlos of Spain. The new flagship model based on the S-Class and badged Mercedes-Maybach S600 will have what Mercedes describes

as "The highest level of customisation and personalisation of MercedesBenz" with luxury leathers, metals and woods. Under the bonnet will be a 6.0-litre V12 with 530hp and 830nm of torque. There will also be an S500 V8 Maybach and an S400 4Matic. The car is due on sale in spring 2015 with 600 models expected to make their way to the UK. The price is said to be £10k to £15k over an above what Mercedes charge for a longwheelbase S-Class which would put the S600 version in the £130,000 ballpark.

Top Gear Live has announced that it will embark on its first ever UK-wide arena tour with the presenters set to perform their latest and greatest stunts in arenas up and down the country. Fronted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, Top Gear Live brings to life the massively popular TV programme. Featuring breath-taking stunts, some of the world’s most incredible cars and the usual calamitous

mucking about, the Top Gear Live show has become a global phenomenon having played to almost 2 million fans in 22 countries. Aside from a short run of sell-out shows in Glasgow earlier this year, these will be the boys’ first UK performances since 2012. The action-packed 90-minute arena show will include exclusive, never before seen sequences as well as some firm fan favourites from their last 10 years of international

touring. Top Gear fans can expect to see lots of fire, tyre smoke, some ridiculous stunts and a healthy dose of competitive spirit between Jeremy, Richard and James. “Our Top Gear Live UK Arena tour is coming and I literally cannot wait. We’ll have supercars, stunts,

explosions and The Stig. Come and see Top Gear, but without the editing. What could possibly go wrong?” said Clarkson. Speaking of the tour, James May said: "In the past, we've taken Top Gear Live all over the world, but this year we're taking it to Newcastle, Liverpool, Belfast, Sheffield and London. That way we'll remember how lucky we are to live in Britain.” Richard Hammond added: "It’s

all very exciting, taking our show on a tour of the UK. I suggested to the other two that we travelled around in a lovely old bus or something but they weren’t keen. I think most of their answers ended in ‘off’.” In just the past 12 months Top Gear Live has toured the world with spectacular shows in Moscow, St Petersburg, Glasgow, Budapest, Zagreb, Turin, Prague, Sydney, Barbados and Durban.

A special car World debut of Ferrari 458 Speciale Aperta at Paris Motor Show

Ferrari announced the 2014 Paris Motor Show world debut of the 458 Speciale A (A as in Aperta). The new limited edition special series is a celebration of the dazzling success of the various versions of the 458, a model that has collected an array of international motoring media awards and track victories, not least a double WEC title and category wins in classic endurance races, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Dedicated to just 499 Ferrari collectors, the 458 Speciale A is the

most powerful spider in Prancing Horse history, effortlessly marrying extreme performance with the sublime pleasure of drop-top driving. Its aluminium retractable hard top, which takes a mere 14 seconds to deploy or retract, helps reduce the weight difference with the Speciale coupé to just 50 kg. The 458 Speciale A sports the most powerful naturally-aspirated roadgoing V8 engine ever built by Ferrari. It punches out a massive 605 cv (135 cv/l specific power output) and 540 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm yet only

generates 275 g/km of CO2 emissions. The three international Best Performance Engine awards the V8 has won are acknowledged on a special plaque in the cockpit. The new car sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds and has a Fiorano lap time of 1’23”5. These superb results are thanks in great part to its front and rear active aerodynamics, the rigidity of a chassis that incorporates 10 aluminium alloys, and Side Slip Angle Control (SSC) which guarantees unparalleled sporty driving in all conditions, underscored

by the seductively exhilarating signature Ferrari soundtrack. As is the case with all Prancing Horse cars, the 458 Speciale A’s sculpted forms are absolutely performance-oriented. In fact, a series of innovative and original bodywork solutions has made the 458 Speciale A the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari spider ever. The 458 Speciale A is being premiered in a unique triple-layer yellow livery with a Blu Nart and Bianco Avus central stripe as well as five-spoke forged wheels in Grigio

Corsa. The cockpit has a distinctive racinginspired look: lightweight yet exclusive materials have been adopted throughout and, of course, crafted with Ferrari’s signature artisanal sophistication. This is particularly true of the finish of the dash, the moulded door panels and central tunnel in an exclusive blue carbon-fibre (also used for the treadplates) as well as the newly-designed seats in Alcantara© with contrasting stitching and 3D technical fabric.

Striking Detroit Electric reveals fastback design for its SP:01 production model

The final exterior design of Detroit Electric’s all-new, pure electric two-seater sports car, the SP:01, is revealed this week as the company gears up for production. The lightweight, limitededition SP:01 will be the world’s fastest production electric sports car when it goes on sale in Asia, Europe and North America, starting in 2015. Revealed as a prototype at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, the design of SP:01 has been subtly updated to further improve the vehicle’s aerodynamic performance, ahead of the start of production at a new facility in the UK later this year. The most striking element of the design is the bold new fastback configuration, which

replaces the prototype’s flying buttresses on either side of the rear window. The exterior design has been optimised using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to provide enhanced airflow and reduce turbulence, for maximum performance and stability. A large sculptural rear wing and an under-body diffuser have been incorporated to reduce lift and improve downforce at higher speeds. The changes to the production vehicle’s aerodynamics are intended to deliver improved on-the-limit road-holding and ensure rewarding and accessible dynamics. A host of aesthetic and functional enhancements to the exterior design accompany the aerodynamic

enhancements. For example, the front air intake and outlet ducts on the bonnet have been reshaped to optimise airflow to the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system. The vehicle’s innovative battery packs have been clad in a protective composite casing which forms an integral part of the vehicle’s structure. This improves the SP:01’s torsional rigidity and provides an extremely robust barrier to protect the batteries from punctures in the event of an accident. The changes to SP:01’s design ensure that it will deliver on its promise to set new standards for performance and handling in the EV segment. Its highpower electric motor will propel the car to an impressive 155 mph (249 km/h) top speed and a 060mph time of just 3.7 seconds. Detroit Electric was revived in 2008 by Albert Lam, former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and Executive Director of Lotus Cars of England, with a vision to produce an electric vehicle that seamlessly integrates refined aesthetics, innovative technology and superior handling and performance.

years ago, almost 400 cars have been tested in real-world conditions, using cutting-edge test equipment, achieving economy figures that are an average of 19% lower than the Government figures. At the other end of the scale, the Volvo V40 2.0 T5 R-Design was only capable of delivering 67.9% of its claimed 47.9 MPG – achieving a measly 32.5mpg. The official figures are achieved under laboratory conditions and can rarely be replicated in the real world.

The True MPG data is scientifically calculated by experienced engineers, who drive test vehicles over a variety of real roads, including motorway, A and B roads and through towns and villages. Government-sanctioned MPG tests data is proving unreliable because the tests are carried out in a laboratory. But when it comes to buying a car, for most buyers considering fuel consumption is amongst the most important attributes of a car.

Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to

take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Monday and Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the

country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.

Ten-men Tino’s hold Teeth Tetley’s Tino 1-1 Borussia Teeth Borussia Teeth extended their unbeaten run to six league games last week, yet still lost ground on the leading pack, with a 1-1 draw against Tetley's Tino. The high-flyers have enjoyed a recent upturn in form since their last defeat against NFA back in September, yet were behind almost immediately with a goal inside the first minute. Ajmal Abrar struck the campaign’s fastest goal of the campaign to put TT in front with a fierce strike. However, the lead wasn’t to last too long with hotshot, Hamza Ismail, once again finding his name on the scoresheet to take his tally up to 15 for the season and subsequently level the game. After a draw last week Teeth were looking for all three points to stay in the top four but TT are known to defend well and kept them at bay. As the second half restarted, early chances fell to both Fahim Rahman and Afzal Hussain who were unable to find a way past opposing keeper, Ziyad Hussain. Hamza then once again came close to bagging yet another goal close for Borussia with a decent effort, before TT had chances of their own. Hasan Noshi and Nadeem went close for TT with powerful strikes, yet it was forward Fahid Rahman who was left with his head in his hands after some clever footwork saw him put through on goal before striking the ball straight at the keeper. As time went by, the game looked to be fizzling out into a draw until Atif

PLAYER OF THE WEEK Borussia Teeth’s Haseeb Ahmed picked up October’s Player of the Month award after bagging an incredible twelve goals in the last four games. Hyde Park 2-0 Samba Boys

Tyler Bussue scored a goal either side of half time to secure a comfortable win for Hyde Park FC as they held on to their spot at the top of the table. The league leaders dominated the game throughout and Bussue could have added more goals if his shooting boots had of been on. The Samba Boys on the other hand, despite appearing to set up well and opting for a very aggressive approach, fell behind through an early goal making it an uphill battle from the start. The second half was much the same story with the highlight move seeing Idris Hussain and Ibrahim Malik involved to put Kadeem Walker through on goal who should have got the third for Hyde Park. Late chances fell to Waleed Akhtar and Walker once again yet the game finished just 2-0, as the table toppers bounced back from last week’s draw with Super Six. MOTM: Kadeem Walker from Hyde Park once again showed why he was so important to the team with a fine showing.

NFA 1 - 0 HODC

A goal in the first half from Monjur Ali was enough to seal a single goal victory for NFA against Half a Dozen Cousins as pressure was kept on Hyde Park at the top of the table. Numerous chances fell to NFA before the goal with Rippon Ali coming close and hitting the post before Kabir Miah hit a shot just wide. Another brilliant chance fell to Kabir when Mohibur Rahman found him with a first time pass only for him to also miss the target. The deadlock was finally broken when Jahangir Miah played in Monjur Ali to finish of a fine move as NFA remained only behind the leaders on goal difference. MOTM: NFA’s Kabir Miah helped his side continue to put pressure on leaders, Hyde Park.

Al Aqs 0-0 Old Bacca Boys

Two games and two clean sheets for Al Aqs, saw the high-flying Old Bacca Boys lose ground on top spot following a goalless draw last week. OBB had to settle for a point in a game where they brought the most attacking threat yet Asim Rashid, in the Al Aqs goal, could not be beaten. MOTM: Al Aqs’ Imran Khan picked up the individual accolade as he helped his side to one of their best results this season.

Jubodhol 2-1 Super Six

A close encounter between one of the league’s top teams and the bottom side may have finished 2-1 to the favourites, yet Super Six once again showed major signs of improvement. The win sees Jubodhol move up to third place with a vital victory with Abdul Kareem and Hamid Ali strikes guiding the side to victory. Ali could, and should, have had picked up his second goal of the night but only to see the Super Six keeper to pull off a smart save. Super Six did pull one back with Wasim Rashid scoring a fine goal, yet as full time approached, they were unable to find the elusive equaliser succumbing to a single goal defeat. MOTM: Abdul Kalam was the standout performer in a close game.

India’s Super (and THE MOST ENTERTAINING FIGHTER OF OUR GENERATION MANNY PACQUIAO By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

On November 22nd 2014 in the early hours of Sunday morning (GMT time) we shall get to see the most entertaining and pound for pound superstars of boxing Manny Pacquiao (56-5-2) fight an undefeated but relatively unknown boxer by the name of Chris Algieri (20-0-0). Algieri is facing one of the most skilled boxers on the planet (Pacquiao) and it is certainly a step up in quality opposition for Algieri, but the American refuses to be daunted by the new experience. Algieri is a 30 year old upcoming boxer who has good looks; a master degree is nutrition and is a former kickboxing champion who resides with his parents in the basement of their home. He is well spoken, down to earth, humble, approachable and does not look like a typical prize fighter. Algieri earned the opportunity of fighting Pacquiao by winning an epic battle against the “hard man” of boxing Ruslan Providnikov in his last boxing bout. However the chances of Algieri beating Pacquiao according to the majority of boxing experts are very slim and Algieri is the huge underdog, but personally I keep having visions of the big upsets in boxing when it comes to writing about the intriguing boxing bout. I remember when the little known and major

Khalil Alam

underdog Buster Douglas upset the odds and knocked out the invincible Mike Tyson and the greatest of all time losing his first fight against a novice boxer Leon Spinks. Algieri himself remains very confident in his boxing ability to dethrone Pacquiao and cause a major boxing upset and in my opinion anything is possible especially when an aging legend (Pacquiao) fights a new breed of undefeated and untested, young upcoming fighters like Algieri because such boxers can cause a major shock in boxing. I have also questioned Pacquiao focus for this as he has recently been heard talking about the Floyd Mayweather fight whilst questioned about his bout with Algieri and he has also been seen playing basketball with a professional team from the Philippine Basketball Association only weeks prior to this fight and risking injury. However even at 36 years old Pacquiao is one of the best fighters of our generation and has and even if he produces 80 per cent of the skills he displayed in previous boxing bouts against Algieri he is almost guaranteed a victory. Pacquiao has always remained a unique fighter who is has phenomenal hand speed, power in both hands, excellent footwork and is very tactical. Algieri on the other hand has previously fought against “journey men” boxers where he was deemed to win with ease. However his the recent bout against Providnikov has proved that the American is a smart and elusive boxer who moves very well around the ring, has an excellent jab and displays good boxing IQ and technically in my opinion could cause some problems for Pacquiao. I expect this fight to go the full 12 rounds and there is every possibly that Algieri could cause an upset even though that seems very unlikely.

Gloves ‘back on’ ACCEPTED: Boxing India was welcomed back to the AIBA yet still has to wait for acceptance from the International Olympic Authority

India return to International boxing After two years in exile, India’s boxing federation has been brought in from the cold as it was unanimously voted back into the International Boxing Association (AIBA) last week. Having been provisionally suspended in December 2012 for ‘possible manipulation’ in the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation’s elections, the country’s sporting body set up a new authority – Boxing India (BI) – under the supervision of the AIBA. Elections were successfully completed in September 2014 and as of November, the country

returned to the international fold. Boxing India President, Sandeep Jajodia, said in a statement: “We are extremely delighted to be unanimously accepted as the permanent Member of AIBA, at the ongoing AIBA quadrennial Congress at Jeju Island, South Korea. “Boxing India carries the aspiration of the nation and will do its utmost to enable India win global acclaim in Boxing. “We will work hard to promote boxing in the country and endeavour to make it the most viewed sport in the nation while focusing on replenishing and further developing the boxing

economy of the region.” BI was earlier granted provisional recognition by AIBA after the elections but is still to get the approval from the Sports Ministry and the Indian Olympic Association. “Our immediate step now would be to get recognition from Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India and membership from IOA,” Jajodia added. BI Secretary General Jay Kowli, also praised the election results and said the renewed membership would allow the country to continue developing the sport.

“It is indeed a great development for Indian boxing and will enable in streamlining the boxing activities,” he said. “Boxing is a priority sport in India and in sports, we all fall down but it's about getting back up and Boxing India is gearing up to immediately kick off all boxing programs with AIBA for training, development and competitions. “We will also strengthen our presence in the other formats of the competition - AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) and World Series of Boxing (WSB), as this will provide good exposure to our pugilists and will enhance their performance.”

not so super) League By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

When India announced that the country would be launching its first major football competition, the eyes of the world were drawn to what Sepp Blatter labelled as ‘one of football’s sleeping giants’. With a population of much more than one-billion, the nation has all the potential to become a major player in the world’s favourite sport, even if it may take a number of decades, and a lot of investment, to achieve it. Nonetheless, the Indian Super League (ISL) which finally kicked off at the start of October, has proven quite the hit with fans all over the world. An average attendance of almost 24,000, similar to that of Italy’s Serie A and higher than France’s esteemed Ligue 1, certainly shows that fans are getting behind the star-studded teams. One player who has lived up to his billing is the Brazilian star, and former Manchester City midfielder, Elano, who leads the league’s

LAUNCH: The start of the first ISL went off with a bang with a special opening ceremony last month

scoring charts on eight goals, five adrift of his nearest competitor. His performances for Chennaiyin FC have helped the side climb to the top end of the table whilst fellow big name players, such as Katsouranis, Anelka and Trezeguet all have a couple of goals to their names. The one noticeable thing missing from the scorer’s charts is perhaps the inclusion of any Indian players with only Atletico de Kolkata’s Cavin Lobo reaching the two goal milestone. There is no denying that the ISL is still in its early stages of development, yet the response it has received shows clearly that it has the potential to grow into much more than an annual two-month tournament. Star names seem to be enjoying their time in South Asia and the chance for national players to train and play alongside the likes of some of world’s football most respected journeymen can only be positive. The inaugural ISL concludes next month yet expect it to come back bigger and better in 2015.

I like running and am still okay.

“It is my number one race, this time there was more than 50,000 runners and I have finished the race every year since 2007.” “I run to work and back every day and have had four races in the last four weeks.” In 2012, Joginder travelled to New York to complete the worldrenowned marathon once again yet when it was cancelled by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Bradford’s proud representative still laced up his

running shoes. Completing four laps of the city’s Central Park, Joginder ensured he still fulfilled a 26-mile run during his visit. More than 3,500 miles have been covered since he started running yet this weekend, Joginder will experience a rare occurrence indeed, a week off.

A 63-year-old running enthusiast from Bradford completed the New York Marathon for an amazing eighth consecutive year earlier this month as he surpassed his own personal 300-run milestone.

A famous singer once said: ‘New York New York, so good they named it twice’, yet for Joginder Singh, you can add another six New York’s to that same statement, as he loves running the annual 26-mile challenge so much.
