From teenage refugee with no English language skills to top London lawyer QUALIFIED: Jasleen Kaur arrived in England ten years ago as a refugee from Afghanistan and now works at one of London’s most reputable law firms
Legal eagle By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
As a teenage refugee from Afghanistan, Jasleen Kaur arrived in the UK with no English language skills and little direction in life.
However, after less than a decade in the country, the now 23-year-old has achieved more in her short time in England than many others ever will, graduating from university and landing her dream job in the paralegal industry.
Now living in London, Jasleen said she could not believe how quickly she had found success in the country. “It is overwhelming to begin with,” she said. “But you quickly realise that dreams are indeed achievable and I have begun to achieve mine.” Jasleen and her family first arrived in the UK in 2005, setting up home in Huddersfield, after life in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, is said to have become oppressive for people of their faith.
As a Sikh family, they quickly settled with the local Sikh community and Jasleen began attending the nearby Moor End Academy where she had the challenge of learning English from scratch. “It came slowly, but I was dedicated and had a sheer passion to learn and be successful,” said Jasleen, whose first language is Punjabi. “All Sikhs are under threat in Afghanistan. You don’t have the freedom to live your life the way you want to.”

Sewa Day ‘I am the change’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
More than one-hundred volunteers from Bradford’s Hindu community dedicated their day to performing selfless acts earlier this month as the 2014 Sewa Day arrived. Sewa, a universal concept which involves performing an act of kindness without expectation of reward, is embedded in Indian traditions and sees thousands of people every year involved. In Bradford, volunteers took on the slogan ‘I am the Change’ for this year’s efforts on Sunday 5th October, and were sent out to a number of locations to undertake their good deeds. From collecting food and clothes for the homeless, to cleaning up primary schools and volunteering at hospices, the city’s 120 DONATIONS: Money was raised through collections in local stores for the Mare Curie Hospice in Bradford
volunteers were certainly active this year. A major food and clothes drive was held at the Lakshmi Narayan Hindu temple and Saj Centre, Lidget Green, for more than six hours. Amongst the items donated were 700 tins of vegetables, 150 duvet and pillow packs, and over 40 boxes of tea and coffee. It took a total of 16 volunteers to help sort through the lorry-load of goods before delivering them to the local St Mary Centre for the
Curry Project, and Bradford Metropolitan Food Bank. Frances Atkins, food-coordinator at the Metropolitan Food Bank, thanked all the volunteers for their much needed collection. “What a wonderful team of volunteers,” she said. “They have collected lots of food for us which will prove a tremendous help in providing food parcels for those in need. “The volunteers were all very

cheerful and had obviously enjoyed their time helping those less fortunate than themselves.” Amongst the other work carried out, volunteers headed to schools including Hill Top Church of England Primary where a clean-up operation was undertaken to help restore the school grounds. Their acts were once again praised by those at the school, including Debbie Johnston, Parental Involvement Worker, who said the group had ‘rejuvenated’

Explaining what the work entailed, Ms Johnston said: “Jobs included pruning bushes and hedges, sanding and staining benches and gathering leaves. “The volunteers were so enthusiastic and happy in their work - it was a pleasure to work alongside such a friendly group of people. “Role on next year’s Sewa Day, Hill Top will definitely be signing up to join in.” Harkishan Mistry, a local coordinator from Bradford, helped organise the Sewa Day activities this year. He added: “The turnout on Sewa Day was fantastic, over 120 volunteers took part in some wonderful projects that demonstrated just how people can join together to put a smile on the faces of each other. “Sewa is not about giving cash donations-just giving up something more valuable - your time, and seeing the joy on some of the faces was priceless.” This year’s International Day of Volunteering saw more than 100,000 people up and down the country join in with the activities. It is the fifth time that the annual event has been officially recognised, helping to raise millions of pounds of added value for Britain.

£12,000 car park fine
Just weeks after Leeds City Council decided to clamp down on dodgy car park firms, an unauthorised car park business has been hit by a £12,000 fine. Roadside Retail Limited who operated an illegal car park at the former Yorkshire Chemicals site on Kirkstall Road were fined £12,000 plus costs in Leeds magistrates court last week for non-compliance with an enforcement notice. This follows the council’s commitment to clamp down on a range of illegal sites as Leeds City Council takes action on firms who have failed to gain planning permission or make authorised sites safe and secure. Councillor Peter Gruen, Executive Member for neighbourhoods, planning and personnel said: “I want car parks in Leeds to be operated legally and safely. This firm has been raking in money from people parking on the site but haven’t been doing so legally.
Housing failures
A London-based property firm which left two properties in Leeds empty and falling into disrepair has been fined by Leeds magistrates following enforcement taken by Leeds City Council. The council took the action following a string of failures to meet environmental and housing standards. The two long term empty properties in the Nowells in East Leeds were investigated by the council for a range of issues and despite attempts to encourage the landlord to bring the properties up to scratch, it was necessary to take legal action. Leeds City Council and its partners have invested significantly in the Nowells over the last 18 months as part of the Leeds Neighbourhood Approach. The resulting new multi-agency area-based approach has seen nearly 40 long-term empty properties brought back into use in this area and improved standards in 127 homes.
Try a new sport this holiday
School children can try their hand at a new sport this halfterm with a range of sports camps being held at Bradford Council sports centres. Handball, trampolining and dodge ball are among the different sports on offer. But those wanting to pursue more familiar activities can opt for football, basketball, tennis and athletics. The B active Sport and Exercise (BASE) camps are all indoors and will be held at Richard Dunn Sports Centre and Nab Wood Sports Centre. They are aimed at children aged five to 13. Five-day camps at Nab Wood Sports Centre are available at £54 (£40 for Passport to Leisure holders). Both Richard Dunn and Nab Wood Sports Centres are also offering three-day camps for £32 (£24 for Passport to Leisure), whilst single day sessions are available at both centres for £13 (£10 for Passport to Leisure).

Safety for Syria
TEAM: The group of volunteers arrived back from the Syrian border earlier this month after delivering aid to men, women and children affected by the nation’s conflict
Aid delivered to those most in need By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Sirens were roaring and medical supplies were at the ready last month as a group of generous drivers travelled thousands of miles to take an ambulance convoy to the Syrian border. As part of a One Nation charity initiative, the group, assembled from only volunteers, took to the roads from Batley in a mission to help those most in need. Passing through France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece and finally Turkey, the group arrived at the Turkey/Syria border seven days after setting off. Six ambulances, full of aid, were taken to the impoverished area to care for refugees who have fled from the war-torn country. Amongst the team of travellers were 22-year-old Nadeem Seedat and Sharaz Karolia, 35, both from Batley, who helped drive the convoy and distribute the aid upon arrival. The pair had never travelled to the area before and decided to join in the project after being offered the chance by trustees from One Nation. For some, the idea of travelling almost 2,000 miles may seem too difficult to comprehend yet Nadeem explains how he never had any second thoughts.

“What’s there to hesitate about being given the opportunity to put a smile on a child’s face,” he said. “As soon as we were told there was a need for two volunteers Sharaz and I immediately put our hands up and I’m glad we did. “Visiting a place like that makes you appreciate everything in life, not just food and possessions but things like the eyes and hands you’ve been given.” The volunteers visited makeshift medical clinics, hospitals and temporary homes on the border, and witnessed firsthand how the Syrian civil war had affected innocent bystanders. In one clinic, victims of the battle were recovering from the severe injuries Nadeem continued: “It was crazy. We went to some clinics, met some people there who had come across from Syria and some had legs or hands missing “In one part, we met a guy in his early twenties. He had third degree burns all over his arms and body, and the doctors said he couldn’t sleep because the burns caused his eyes to stay open. “It was shocking to see but made you realise why the aid was so important.” After visiting the clinics and

hospital, the group were invited to spend time with families who had been affected and were seeking refuge on the border. Hundreds of men, women and children are made to live in small, cramped conditions, with minimal food, water and medical supplies available. One Nation UK provide relief to these families and individuals through on-the-ground work and provide support to those affected by global conflicts. Nadeem said he is excited at the prospect of continuing to work with the registered charity and is determined to continue volunteering and return to the border. “Sharaz and I definitely want to do something like this again and that is why we still have our fundraising page, www.donate2syria.co.uk open,” he added. “I think we need to start doing more fundraising over here and making more effort, getting more aid for them because the situation is really bad for a lot of innocent people. “What me and Sharaz plan to do now is fundraise for food parcels and hopefully distribute them ourselves in the near future.”

Achieving a First Class Honours degree, the avid learner thanked those involved with her education and described the town’s university
Turning lives around
Bradford Council is seeking to help ex-offenders turn their lives around and reduce re-offending rates. The Council's Executive is being asked on 16th October to give the goahead to the Fresh Start programme. The programme, led by the Council would work with partner organisations and focus on helping ex-offenders become employable, reduce the likelihood of homelessness and improve their overall health and wellbeing. Research has found that a more holistic approach to assisting exoffenders i.e. not just giving them training in job skills, but providing the tools to keep them in a job are critical to them not falling into re-offending. This includes stable housing arrangements, tackling alcohol and drug use, mental and physical wellbeing and being connected to community life.
Improved schools, improved learning
Schools across Calderdale are enjoying new and improved facilities thanks to a funding boost from Calderdale Council. The schools were a hive of activity over the summer holidays as works took place to spruce them up – from upgraded lighting to brand new classrooms. A few weeks into the new term, students and teachers are already seeing the benefits. The funding came after the Council’s Cabinet agreed to provide grants or loans to the schools who wish to upgrade their facilities and provide a more up to date learning environment, but can’t fund the works on their own. Grants and loans of up to £75,000 are available, which Councilmaintained schools can apply for.
Try your hand at painting
Painting portraits can be a challenge, but the portrait workshop at Oakwell Hall could prove to be the answer for many an amateur artist’s problem. Commissioned portrait artist Richard Lucas is running the workshop and will provide a step-bystep guide to facial composition. Participants will be led through various techniques such as crosshatching, blending and shading. Richard welcomes anyone over the age of eight with any level of ability. Participants are asked to bring photographs of family and friends or they can have a go at drawing a choice of celebrities. All materials will be provided. The workshop runs from 10am to 12noon and costs £3.50 per person. It is being held in the upstairs classroom of the Oakwell Hall Country Park visitor centre, at the top of Nutter Lane, Birstall.

property law – her main area of interest – for Kirklees Council, and then a move to London for the next important phase in her qualification as a
solicitor when she took her Legal Practice Course (LPC) at Kaplan Law School. Jasleen says she was encouraged to apply for a position at Nabarro, which she has now landed, and hopes that the two-year training contract will be a stepping stone to further posts at a firm she describes as a ‘property powerhouse’.
“I like the type of work that Nabarro does, with major developers and major clients,’ she said. “It is the sheer tangible aspect of it, being a part of something has a huge impact on day-to-day life. You come across the type of transactions the firm works on every day, especially in London.”
Lord Ahmad visits Yorkshire By Tanya Shah
tanya@asianexpress.co.uk
A QED project to help third country women be part of the wider community in Bradford was visited by a member of the House of Lords last week. Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, a Conservative member of the House of Lords and Parliamentary under-secretary of state, visited the ‘Quest for Integration Yorkshire’ project to see how the service helps 300 migrant women who are legally living in Yorkshire with a potential route to settlement. The project is run by one of Bradford’s most established charities the QED Foundation - which works to improve the economic and social prosperity of the most disadvantaged, focusing on the needs of new and settled migrant communities. The ten-week programme provides crèche facilities to ensure participation and is delivered with local delivery partners across various parts of Yorkshire. Lord Tariq Ahmad said: “It’s inspiring to meet the women on the QED programme who are clearly benefiting from these crucial support services. “It’s a lifeline that helps address not only cultural barriers, but takes practical steps to ensure Muslim women and their families become a valuable asset with a positive contribution to British society.” During his visit to Yorkshire, he also visited the Woodsley community centre in Hyde Park in Leeds where Lord Ahmad was told about projects, which promoted cohesion, including a cricket scheme for Muslim and Jewish players. Lord Ahmed commented that: “A lack of funding for projects was a theme that ran through the meeting,” whist discussing extra help for European migrants settled in Leeds.

Dynamo - the
‘demon
child’
Magician Dynamo has revealed that children at his school thought he was a ‘demon child’ because of a trick he did. The Bradford-born performer, real name Steven Frayne, said the rumour started after he began doing his first stunt, taught to him by his grandfather to help him deal with bullies. It involved asking a person to lift his slight frame off the ground, then using their own weight to prevent them from being able to do it, the 31year-old told a weekly national title. “They started spreading rumours that I was a demon child, so it worked in a way, it got people to leave me alone,” he told the paper. “But it also scared people away from me and made me a bit of a loner.” Dynamo has built up a huge following using social media and counts David Beckham, Will Smith, Jay Z and Sir Paul McCartney amongst his fans. Dynamo grew up on a tough housing estate in Bradford, and has previously spoken about how as a thin, sickly child he was targeted by bullies.
Malala awarded Nobel Peace Prize
Pakistani teenager, Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by Taliban in her home country, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in advocating girl’s rights to education. The 17-year-old has become the youngest ever recipient of the prestigious award and was named as the winner, alongside Indian children's right activist Kailash Satyarthi, 60, last week. Upon accepting her award, Malala spoke of the great honour she felt in receiving the nomination and how she was happy to share the moment with a recipient from India. “One is from Pakistan. One is from India. One believes in Hinduism. One strongly believes in Islam. And it gives a message to people,” said Malala. “It gives a message to people of love between Pakistan and India and between different religions. And we both support each other. She added: “A girl has the power to go forward in her life, and she’s not only a mother, she’s not only a sister, she’s not only a wife. But a girl should have an identity. She should be recognised, and she has equal rights as a boy.” Malala was attacked in 2012 on a school bus in Pakistan by masked gunmen as a punishment for a blog that she started writing for the BBC's Urdu service as an 11-year-old to campaign against the Taliban's efforts to deny women an education. Unable to return to Pakistan after her recovery, Malala moved to Britain, setting up the Malala Fund and supporting local education advocacy groups.

Saltaire Hydro Scheme
Bradford Council is asking people for their views on a proposed renewable energy scheme at Saltaire. Using the same weir Titus Salt modified to harness the power of the River Aire to drive his mill machines, Bradford Council has developed a proposal to install a hydro electric turbine into the river bank opposite Salt's Mill. The water power plant will continue a legacy of drawing power from the river which began in the 15th century. As well as providing renewable energy, the hydro electric plan will also provide an educational resource, incorporates a 'fish ladder' and will improve the river bank in the area. Extra care will be taken in the construction and operational stages to ensure than there are no adverse environmental impacts of the project.
‘No’ to housing development
Plans for housing developments in Adel have been refused by a meeting of the council plans panel last week. The submissions by developers would have seen residential development of up to 80 dwellings at land east of Otley Road, and development of up to 46 dwellings at land east of Church Lane. Councillor Jim McKenna, Chair of the City Plans Panel, said: “There’s a wide range of issues behind our refusal, from transport and infrastructure availability, to the presence of the Church of St John the Baptist, one of the finest examples of twelfth century church buildings in the country. “These decisions show we are committed to ensuring high quality housing development takes place in reasonable locations.”
My Leeds, My Culture

SUCCESS: Ahmed Elmekawy achieved his PhD without any corrections needed and was subsequently awarded a prestigious award from the University of Huddersfield
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
An Egyptian-born scientist has been showing that when it comes to chemistry, he is top of the class, after acing his PhD with no errors. Ahmed Elmekawy, who practices at the University of Huddersfield, has been making great strides in research that will ultimately help the chemical industry become more environmentally friendly and economically efficient. After three years of ruthless studying for his PhD, the now Dr Elmekawy received his thesis back from examiners last week without requiring any corrections. The rare distinction puts the researcher above the rest of his class and his achievement was recognised by the university who issued him with a Vice-Chancellor’s Award for an Outstanding Research Degree Thesis. Now Dr Elmekawy says he plans to continue with his research, which aims to develop new types of solid catalyst for chemical processes. “The project is aimed directly at reducing the environmental impact of the chemical syntheses that are currently used in industry,” explains Dr Elmekawy. “Over decades, thousands of liquid phase chemical processes have been developed using liquid acid and liquid base catalysts. “These catalysts are very active, but they result in a large amount of effluent as they are removed from the processes. Replacing them with solid catalysts would immediately reduce the amount of effluent generated.” After obtaining a BSc degree in Physical and Chemical Sciences at Tanta University in his native Egypt, Dr Elmekawy worked as head of the chemical department for a Saudi-based company before

deciding to continue his studies and relocate to the UK which, according to the well-travelled scientist, ‘has the best education in the world’. He selected the University of Huddersfield, after being impressed by various factors, including its high employability rate among former students. Studying for an MSc in analytical chemistry, Dr Elmekawy scored the first of his distinctions, before moving on to PhD research, for which he was awarded a scholarship. He has published three papers and given a sequence of conference presentations on his work and has been preparing a new article, co-authored with University of Huddersfield professors Rob Brown and Joe Sweeney, for the journal ‘Catalysis Science and Technology’. Dr Elmekawy now continues with postdoctoral work at the University, and his career goals include collaboration with industry in tandem with academic research.

Million March By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A former Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir says he is hopeful that more than one-million people will join him in London later this month in protest against the current situation in his homeland. Sultan Mahmood Barrister Chaudhry will be hosting the ‘Million March’ on Sunday 26th October with campaigners marching from Trafalgar Square through the streets of London. Seeking a peaceful resolution to the situation in Kashmir, which has so far resulted in three wars between India and Pakistan, Mr Chaudhry wants to give the people of Kashmir a ‘voice’ in the decision over their future. Much like Scotland’s recent referendum, the former leader of Kashmir hopes a democratic vote could be the answer to resolving the longstanding issue.
Mr Chaudhry was in Bradford earlier this week to speak about the march and spoke to the Asian Express newspaper from Mumtaz Restaurant. “We are expecting a lot of people from Kashmir to come down on the day, along with members of Parliament, members of European Parliament and representatives from the House of Lords,” he said. “I hope for a big gathering which will express our solidarity with the people of Kashmir and show our support to the area. “Currently, there is a lot of tension between people of India and Pakistan and this march will attract international attention to these two nuclear countries and their actions.” He continued: “We are holding the march in London for a number of reasons. There are more than one million Kashmir people living in the UK so we are expecting a large turnout. “Also, keeping in mind the recent choice that was presented to Scottish people of where their

‘Give Kashmir’s population a say in their own future’ future lies, the people of Kashmir simply want their own say as well. They want free will and aspire to talk for themselves.” Rab Nawaz, director of Mumtaz, said he was in full support of the ‘Million March’ and praised the idea when it was first pitched to him. “There are a couple of reasons why I backed the idea,” Mr Nawaz said. “I’m from Kashmir myself so I regularly hear of what is happening
in the area. “This is not a new problem. These issues have been happening in the area for the past 60 years and it has become regular news for us. “Mr Chaudhry is a close friend of mine and when he spoke about hosting the walk I thought it was a really good idea. “Much like the Gaza and Palestine demonstrations, we want to get the news out of what is
happening and this march is a great way of doing that.” The Million March will take place in the capital on Sunday 26th October, starting at Trafalgar Square at 1pm, and finishing at 10 Downing Street. A coach will be heading to London at 7.30am from Mumtaz Restaurant for anyone from Bradford who wishes to attend.

Pakistani Art in Yorkshire Unique exhibition set to be showcased in Batley
PASSIONATE: Mohammed Farooq Hussain said he wants to showcase Pakistani art to a wider audience and get more British-Asian students interested in a career in art
“This exhibition will allow people from all cultures to look at what Pakistan has to offer in a wide range of fields.”
Artists from Pakistan will see their work displayed alongside some of Batley School of Art’s most promising student’s as a special exhibition is displayed later this month. The event is the result of the dream and hard work of local pharmacist, Mohammed Farooq Hussain, who wanted to bring the work of artists from Pakistan to the Wheelwright Centre in Birkdale Road, Dewsbury. The exhibition will feature the work of graduate artists from the National College of Arts in Lahore; work by fashion graduates from the Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design, as well as art and textile graduates from Punjab University of College and Design. Mr Hussain said: “Visual art forms - painting, photography, textiles and fashion all tell their own story of the heart, the soul, and the mind, of time and of place almost better than any other form of communication known to man. “It is this unique power we wish to harness in the exhibition, to break down the cultural, social, religious, language barriers that might exist in our local communities engendering better understanding better communication and bringing people together.” Mr Hussain added that it was an ambition of his to see more young Pakistani students pursue a career in the arts and show that there is more to the country than what is portrayed in the media. “Pakistan is much more than just fundamentalism and extremism which is all too often broadcast on our television screens,” he said. “This exhibition will allow

people from all cultures to look at what Pakistan has to offer in a wide range of fields.” This is the first time Batley School of Art has hosted such an event for external artists and it will complement the work carried out by current students studying at Kirklees College. The work displayed at the exhibition will explore the culture, heritage, people and religion through a series of insightful expressions and musings captured in breathtaking brushstrokes, colours, photographs and fashion. Head of creative industries at Kirklees College Karen
Matula said: “This is a new and exciting venture for Kirklees College and Batley School of Art. We are looking forward to opening our doors to the community to come and see an exciting range of art work and fashion from students and artists based in Pakistan. “Mr Hussain wanted to do something different and we are delighted to be able to host this exhibition to fulfil his dream and develop closer links as a result.” The exhibition, which is free to visit, will be held on Saturday 18th October from 10.30am until 6pm and Sunday 19th October between 11am and 3pm.

NHS bosses threw pens at ‘incompetent, underperforming, useless’ hospital staff Shouting at colleagues in front of patients at the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust was the ‘norm’
Hospital staff were called “incompetent, underperforming, useless and dopey”, pushed and prodded, and had pens thrown at them, an investigation into bullying has revealed. Shouting at colleagues in front of patients at the Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust was the “norm”, and the belief was that the bullying came from the top, the report by conciliation service Acas found. Acas, which conducted interviews with 97 staff members, was called in after a critical report by CQC inspectors, highlighting the bullying claims and staff shortages at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, earlier this year. During interviews many were in tears and some said they had been emotionally damaged by the experience “and were no longer the same people as they were before”. Many had had to take “significant” time off sick, leave or take lower grade jobs “to escape”, with many saying they had been in tears at work and home and “dreaded” coming into work. Those who complained were often victimised and interviewees complained of managers handpicking friends to conduct investigations to get the result they wanted, or being told by senior managers to raise their concerns with the very managers who were doing the bullying. Examples of bullying included consultants being threatened with the sack if they didn’t work on Saturdays and those who were not in an “in group” in the cliquey environment of the hospitals being given the worst shifts, moved around a lot deliberately and being excluded from meetings and social events. The report said: “Many staff talked of feeling intimidated into not pursuing complaints and there was a strong belief this message came from the very top, with senior staff being seen as supportive of bullies and the bullying culture.” It concluded: “There was an overwhelming feeling that only major changes at the top would lead to a real cultural shift.” Some staff were too frightened
to attend the interviews - even on the telephone “for fear they would be identified.” The Yorkshire Post revealed at the weekend that former chief executive Phil Morley, who quit his post in Hull in the spring just before the report was published, was handed an extra £10,000 in basic pay in 2013-14, taking his salary to £195,000-£200,000. Staff are being briefed today about the report and an action plan which includes mandatory training for all about acceptable behaviour and the creation of a support service and hotline number for staff to report concerns anonymously. The hospital trust has said disciplinary action is an option
“The Acas report makes uncomfortable reading at times, but I am very much focused on making the issues it raises a thing of the past. Together with our staff side representatives, we will be working to ensure our staff feel safe at work and that everyone understands the behaviours we expect of them. Furthermore, if anyone who works for us experiences any negative behaviours going forward, we want them to know exactly how to report them and have confidence that action will be taken to address their issues.” But he stressed that the “vast majority” of staff didn’t experience bullying. Paul Credland, Staff Side
“Many staff talked of feeling intimidated into not pursuing complaints and there was a strong belief this message came from the very top, with senior staff being seen as supportive of bullies and the bullying culture.” and will not shy away from probing cases where investigations find a clear case to answer. But health union Unison has said bullies who are still in the organisation need to go before real progress can be made. Chief executive Christopher Long, who took over last week, said: “I have a very clear message to our workforce: bullying, intimidation, harassment and other such behaviours will simply not be tolerated.
Chair of the Joint Negotiating and Consultation Committee, which represents a number of unions working alongside the Trust, said bullying has increased because of a “target driven culture and poor management skills.” He said he welcomed Mr Long’s response, adding: “I look forward to working in partnership in the Anti-Bullying Group to address the issues raised by the ACAS report.”

Charity bid to save Chapel Historic site could be restored to former glory By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A charity in Bradford has helped to temporarily halt any plans to demolish one of the city’s Grade II-listed buildings after declaring an interest in restoring the site as their headquarters. The Despencers Charitable Trust was set up last year to help homeless people in Bradford find accommodation and also offer legal aid to those who are representing themselves in court. Contact was made by the group to Bradford Council in regard to the Roman Catholic chapel in Bowling Cemetery which was planned to be demolished and replaced by a memorial garden. Since 1987, the site has stood derelict and has become an unwanted area for crime in the area. Trustee of the charity, Joseph Maxwell, said he was alerted to the opportunity of development by a friend and after conducting some research, contacted the local authorities. Explaining why the site would be not only ideal for the trust but also the wider community, he said:
“We’re basically interested in building here as it is a fine location to set up. “We would not disrupt the activities in the cemetery and would rather act as a solution to the crime problem in this area. “At first, people might be sceptical about coming into a cemetery for a charity but once we have talks with the council I’m hoping we can fence off the building, and create a small road which could be used to access the site.”
do is bring the building back to life,” he said. “Since the 1980’s it has been stationary and nothing has happened here. It has only been a site for vandalism “What we would do is make this site into some sort of office for the charity, so we would have a base here. “What that gives back to the community is that people know there is something here and hopefully they will then feel safer to come to the cemetery because
HOPEFUL: Joseph Maxwell and Shazad Hamed, from the Despencers Charitable Trust, want to restore the building and use it as their new headquarters
“We would not disrupt the activities in the cemetery and would rather act as a solution to the crime problem in this area.” 15 offences have taken place in the cemetery between 1st February and 31st July this year, ranging from muggings to vandalism. Shazad Hamed, volunteer with the charity, added his reasoning as to why the premises have been selected. “Basically what we are trying to
we are a positive presence.” He continued: “We would also be in keeping with the building’s heritage, keeping the original features and just giving it a bit of TLC inside.” The group are now waiting to hear of any further developments from their proposal.

Lister Park lights up as thousands watch annual parade By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
More than 170 lanterns lit up one of Bradford’s most popular parks last weekend as the highlyanticipated Listers Lanterns exhibition returned to Bradford. Weeks of hard work in schools and community groups culminated in a spectacular light display at Lister Park on Saturday evening with lanterns of all shapes and sizes on view. From small tee light designs to mammoth animals, there was an array lanterns for people to see, with a special finale held at the bandstand after a parade around the park. Organised by the Cecil Green Arts group, and funded by Bradford Council, this year’s parade was ‘bigger and better’ than last year, with workshops being held throughout the day to finish off the final project. Katie Jones, community artist and member of Cecil Green Arts, constructed her own giant design this year and was thrilled to see such a turnout from the local area. “We had around 2,000 people in total come down throughout the day, who joined in with the
workshops and watched the final parade,” she said. “Last year we had to battle some terrible weather but thankfully this time the crowd were able to enjoy the parade on a pleasant evening. “Everybody was much more enthusiastic about this year’s event and I think that is partly because they knew more about it this year and were eager to get involved with things like workshops.” Ms Jones, from Shipley, lives only a stone’s throw away from Lister Park and said this year’s theme was all about stories from the park. “There was a Mister Lister and a giant

He said: “Living locally I was very impressed by the diversity of the turnout on the day following on from last year’s event. “I really enjoyed seeing all the lanterns and it was great to see children and young people engage with the project.”

Diabetes breakthrough could end insulin jabs GIANT LEAP: Scientist believe that new study shows that people with Type 1 diabetes may no longer need to inject themselves with insulin
Scientists believe they have made a ‘giant leap forward’ in their search for an effective treatment for Type 1 diabetes. They hope it could eventually mean people with diabetes no longer need to inject themselves with insulin. Diabetes is an autoimmune condition that causes the pancreas to stop producing insulin - the hormone that regulates blood glucose levels. If the amount of glucose in the blood is too high, over time it can seriously damage the body's organs. In this study, experts using human embryonic stem cells as a starting point have, for the first time, produced human insulinproducing beta cells. These cells are the equivalent in almost every way to normally functioning beta cells and have been produced in the kind of massive quantities needed for cell
transplantation and pharmaceutical purposes. The stem cell-derived beta cells are currently undergoing trials in animal models, including nonhuman primates. Doug Melton, the Xander University Professor at Harvard University, who led the work, said he hopes clinical trials could be carried out on humans within a few years. Professor Melton, who is also codirector of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, also added that the device being tested has so far protected beta cells implanted in mice from immune attack for many months. "There have been previous reports of other labs deriving beta cell types from stem cells, no other group has produced mature beta cells as suitable for use in patients," he said. "The biggest hurdle has been to get to glucose-sensing, insulinsecreting beta cells, and that's what
our group has done. "We are now just one pre-clinical step away from the finish line." Cell transplantation as a treatment for diabetes is still essentially experimental and has been available to only a very small number of patients. It uses cells from dead bodies and requires the use of powerful drugs to suppress a person's immune system. Professor Elaine Fuchs, of Rockefeller University, described the findings as ‘one of the most important advances to date in the
stem-cell field’. "For decades, researchers have tried to generate human pancreatic beta cells that could be cultured and passaged long term under conditions where they produce insulin. "(Professor) Melton and his colleagues have now overcome this hurdle and opened the door for drug discovery and transplantation therapy in diabetes," she said. Around 10 per cent of all diabetes is Type 1 but it is the most common type of childhood diabetes.

A local sports project, which brought together hundreds of members from Dewsbury’s mixed communities, has helped to raise more than £4,000 in the fight against cancer. Youth from Savile Town’s Kumon Y’all, one again showed that their actions can speak louder than words as the second annual Let’s Unite 2014 Charity Football tournament only built on last year’s success. During their Family Fun Day, around £1,500 was raised for MacMillan Cancer Support with a further £2,600 on top of that donated through arranged collections at local mosques. After weeks of tallying up every last penny, the final total stands at £4,156 which was handed over to representatives from the charity on Tuesday 7th October. Organised by Kumon Y’all, the games helped the group continue with their goal of giving local youths the chance to provide positive contributions to their communities. Mohammed Musa, Kumon Y’all Let’s Unite Project Leader said the money raised highlights the success of this year’s event,

New license scheme makes local cabbies ‘extremely happy’ A new licensing scheme in Calderdale has been praised by the region’s taxi drivers who are set to find it easier and cheaper to licence cars whilst also improving confidence in passengers. New, improved taxi and private hire plates came into place on 1st October, which contain clearer information for public safety; cost half the original price for licence holders; and can be renewed much faster.
which only showed the licence number and registration number. By including the expiry date, passengers can be confident they are travelling with a licensed driver in a roadworthy car. The benefit for drivers is that the plate acts as a reminder of when it needs renewing. Sajid Ramzan from the Halifax Taxi Owners Association praised the new scheme which he says will be widely accepted by his fellow
industry professionals. He said: “We are extremely happy with the new plates. Having the expiry dates on them means that people can be confident they are travelling in a roadworthy taxi with a licensed driver.” The move came after the Council consulted with licence holders and members of the public earlier this year, with almost every person saying they wanted the new scheme to be introduced to benefit licence holders and taxi users. Chair of the Licensing and

Regulatory Committee, Cllr Robert Thornber, said: “We recognise the important role that taxis play for residents and visitors travelling around Calderdale. “Public safety and a high standard of taxi service is paramount, and through our new licensing scheme we have stepped up work to ensure this. “By introducing the new plates,
we have streamlined the process, saved time and money and can pass on those savings to licence holders.” The new plates are issued by the Council's transport service at Battinson Road, Halifax, following a successful compliance test, meaning that drivers can start using their licensed vehicle straight away.

‘Pay’ or ‘quit’
Calderdale Council will become the first local authority in England to offer smokers caught dropping litter the chance to attend stop smoking sessions rather than pay a fine. Currently if anyone is caught dropping a cigarette end they are issued with a fixed penalty notice of £80, payable within 14 days. If the scheme is approved, Council staff will be able to offer smokers the option to pay the fine or get help to quit from the local specialist NHS Stop Smoking Service. Not only will smokers save money by avoiding a fine but also on the cost of buying cigarettes – on average most people who quit save around £150 a month and around £1800 per year. It may also mean that there will be less smoking-related litter in the environment.
Tackling loneliness
“We are extremely happy with the new plates. Having the expiry dates on them means that people can be confident they are travelling in a roadworthy taxi with a licensed driver.” The licensing of hackney carriage and private hire vehicles is carried out by the Council's licensing team. Previously licence plates were provided by an external company, but now the Council is cutting the cost by creating them in-house, and more information is now being printed on them. As well as the expiry date, the plates also show the licence number and registration number of the licensed vehicle – an improvement from the old plates

GUILTY: Anjan Shahzad’s pictures were broadcast in an appeal for his arrest following the two sexual offences
SENTENCED Bus offender captured An appeal from West Yorkshire police has resulted in the arrest and sentencing of a Dewsbury man who was found guilty of a series of sex offences on two teenage girls on a local bus route. 33-year-old, Anjan Shahzad, of Jeremy Lane, Heckmondwike, was handed a three-year community order and three-year supervision order at Leeds Crown Court last week. He has also been placed on the sex offenders register for five years. Shahzad was found guilty of the two offences commited on the 268 bus route less than three weeks apart from each other. Initially, on 30th July, he boarded the bus from a stop outside Peacocks clothes shop in Heckmondwike town centre. Shortly after the journey began Shahzad moved to sit next to the 18year-old and proceeded to sexually touch the victim before getting off the bus at the next stop. A similar incident was then repeated on 19th August with another 18-year-old female victim. Images were released of Shahzad on the bus and following a successful appeal earlier this year, he was detained by police. Detective Constable Joe Aspinall, from Dewsbury CID, said previously: “These crimes have left a number of women understandably distressed and upset by what has taken place.”

‘Uni-Watch’ launched
A new initiative has been launched that sees closer cooperation between police and University of Leeds security staff in and around the campus and student accommodation. Officers from the Inner North West Neighbourhood Policing Team and the University’s security team are helping to keep students, staff and members of the public safe by sharing information real time and working in partnership to respond to incidents and deal jointly with ongoing issues. Under the new ‘Uni Watch’ scheme the University team now has a direct radio link to officers. The team is a professional and accredited unit that has a number of valuable resources that can assist police officers responding to incidents in and around the campus. It features a dog section, which is trained by West Yorkshire Police to the same standards as its own, and operates a system of
180 external CCTV cameras from a 24-hour control centre. The security officers already work closely with PC Matt Guy, the University’s police liaison officer, and assist with patrols as part of Operation Optimal that targets burglary hotspots. Inspector Howie Milner, who heads the Inner North West NPT, said: “We have an excellent existing relationship with the University and already work closely together to prevent crime and keep people safe. “The University of Leeds security team takes a very proactive approach and is a really valuable resource. This new initiative gives us a real time link via the radio that means we will be able to work even more closely together to tackle crime in and around the campus.” Alan Cain, Head of Security at the University of Leeds, added: “Student safety in residences and on campus has improved dramatically in recent years. The real time radio link with West Yorkshire Police builds still further on this success and the great partnership we already have. It means even faster police response times when dealing with incidents.”

UK student visa policy ‘baffling’ The UK's policy on student visas is baffling, the vicechancellor of Oxford University has told an audience of academics. Prof Andrew Hamilton said when he travelled abroad "one question persists - why has the UK adopted a visa system so hostile to student entry? "I do my best to answer but, frankly, the question baffles me as well." The Home Office argues its overhaul of the student-visa system two years ago had been necessary to tackle abuse. But Prof Hamilton said the policy of limiting international student numbers was now harming the UK. “For the first time in decades, the number of international students at our universities has dropped, most markedly from India,” he said. The government's policy of tightening up the student visa system has been criticised as damaging to the ability of UK universities to recruit economically valuable international students. Prof Hamilton used his annual oration to the university to urge political parties to end student migrant targets and to use research-based evidence in forming election policies, particularly on immigration. He cited recent research by Oxford's Migration Observatory, which, he argued, showed the public did not link overseas student numbers with immigration issues. “Study is the least frequent answer given when the public are asked what they consider the motives for migration to be,” Prof
“For the first time in decades, the number of international students at our universities has dropped, most markedly from India.” Hamilton said. “Student migration simply isn't an issue for them and there are few votes in restricting overseas student numbers. “There are signs that this reality is beginning to dawn across the political spectrum - something to be welcomed and encouraged ahead of the election.” He added that university research could help shed light on ‘complex political and policy challenges’ and ‘defy the temptation to reach for simple or simplistic answers’. “In essence, we can provide the data, the understanding and the analysis to underpin arguments and the possible solutions for the

problems we all face,” he said. Prof Hamilton called for more recognition of the huge public benefit that higher education brought to the UK - ‘sadly benefit which far outstrips the level of public investment in our sector’. He noted that UK public investment in higher education stood at 0.9% of gross domestic product (GDP), "one of the lowest in Europe", and urged politicians to come up with "properly developed policies on higher education", which would benefit not only students and universities, but would also be "hugely beneficial to the public good".

RESTAURANT: Cona has been open in Little Germany five months, serving up some fantastic dishes to hundrefor the past ds of diners
SPEECH: Prime Minister David Cameron speaks to guests at the Eid Reception at 10 Downing Street
Cooking for the Prime Minister
Bradford restaurant’s ‘unforgettable’ Downing Street experience By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Bradford’s Cona restaurant may have only set up five months ago yet the halal fine-dining eatery has already achieved much more than many other restaurants ever will. Last week, the restaurant was represented at 10 Downing Street after being selected to prepare their cuisine for Prime Minister David Cameron and around 160 guests at the annual Eid reception.
Armi Ahmed and Oman Rana are co-owners of the dining hotspot and were part of the fourperson team who headed down to the capital to prepare the servings. Mr Ahmed explained how the chance of cooking at the historic location was just another sign of the amazing progress Cona has made since opening its doors. “It was quite a surreal experience to be honest,” he said. “We have only been here a few months in bradford so to be selected to cook for the Prime

Halloween activities
“It was quite a surreal experience to be honest. We have only been here a few months in bradford so to be selected to cook for the Prime Minister and his guests is a bit unbelievable.” Minister and his guests is a bit unbelievable. “A lot of credit has to go to our head chef, Gavin Jackson, who designed and planned the final menu after great consideration. “His choices were based around the current seasons of autumn and winter and he deserves a lot of credit.” In the Prime Minister’s speech, Mr Cameron spoke of the role British Muslims play in today’s society and praised the demographic’s response to the ‘appalling brutality of ISIL’. “Tonight I want to say something about the importance of Eid; I want to say something about the enormous contribution that British Muslims make to our country; and I want to say something about the work that we’re all doing as a country to help Muslims around the world,” he said. “But before I say that I want to say something about what a
difficult Eid I know it has been because of the terrible events in Iraq and Syria and the appalling brutality of ISIL. “But in the midst of this brutality and the awful beheading of British hardworking good, compassionate men like Alan Henning and David Haines, in the midst of all that, something has emerged in our country which makes me incredibly proud. “And that has been the response of British Muslims who have stood up and stood together and said: ‘These appalling events are not being done in my name’. “And I felt so proud of British Muslims in everything that you have said and everything that you have done. “And let us say again tonight that these people in Iraq and Syria doing these appalling things, they have nothing to do with the great religion of Islam, a religion of peace, a religion that inspires daily acts of kindness and generosity.”
There will be creepy goings-on in Kirklees Museums during the schools’ October half-term holiday in the run up to Halloween. At Red House in Gomersal from Tuesday 28th to Thursday 30th October, youngsters can drop in anytime between 11am and 5pm, to make things to use and wear on Halloween. On Tuesday 28th October, from 12noon to 4pm children can celebrate Harvest-time by making potato people at Bagshaw Museum in Batley. Children can get into the mood for Halloween with creepy crafts at Oakwell Hall, Birstall, on Wednesday 29th October. On Thursday 30th October, Dewsbury Museum in Crow Nest Park turns creepy with a spooky trail, Halloween lanterns and scary bats and spiders to make. And finally, on Halloween itself, Friday 31st October, spooks and ghouls will be at Tolson Museum to provide fearful fun for children between 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm.
Alternative markets in Huddersfield
Kirklees Council is offering a fantastic opportunity to young local people aged 13-29 to showcase their creative products and talents free of charge. On Saturday 29th November, the Alternative Market will run in St Peters Gardens alongside the Festival of Light. Taking place from 12 noon until 9pm, young people can book a stall, a workshop, a busking spot or a place on the stage. Taking inspiration from the ‘Teenage Market’ which started in Stockport in 2012, the Alternative Market is aimed at supporting local young people and transforming town centres. The success of the Stockport initiative has led retail guru Mary Portas to describe it as being ‘innovative and inspiring’.

£5,000 REWARD
Crimestoppers want justice for injured shopkeeper By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A group of criminals, who attempted to rob a shop with a machete in May, are being sought by police with a cash reward offered for information that could lead to their arrest. The Wibsey Convenience store, Bradford, was targeted by the would-be robbers in May this year when five men stormed into the premises armed with a gun and machete. Whilst attempting to defend his store, the shop owner, who has asked not to be named, had his thumb severed in the attack and had to have surgery to reattach it. He also lost pints of blood from a wound inflicted to the back of his head. Despite appeals, the five men have never been caught and now the national crime fighting charity, Crimestoppers, has stepped in to offer a reward to help find the suspects. The wanted group, thought to be Asian males in their late teens, have so far eluded arrest. Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Tony Nicholson, said: “This was a nasty incident, and it has left the victim with an injury which potentially threatens his livelihood. “This was an innocent man who was trying to stop his premises from being robbed.

“No one should have to suffer such WANTED: CCTV injuries protecting images of the wanted their property, and men were released by that is why I am police calling on the local community to come forward with any information they might have. “Somebody will know who is responsible for this and I would urge them to contact police on 101, or if they would prefer, to give information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.” Gemma Wilson, Crimestoppers’ Yorkshire Regional Manager, also appealed for any information “This attack was particularly violent which is why the culprits must be caught,” she said. “I urge anyone with information to contact us immediately, without the fear of their identity being revealed. “No-one who provides information to Crimestoppers need ever be concerned about giving statements to police or having to go to court.”

‘Child of Courage’ Inspirational teen leads the way in volunteering
VOLUNTEER: A trip to India was undertaken by 30 volunteers, including Mohammed, as they worked on a project to build a school in a rural area of the country
A young fundraising enthusiast from Bradford was given even more reasons to celebrate earlier this week, after receiving a prestigious national accolade just days after he was nominated for a Yorkshire’s Children of Courage award. It has certainly been quite the year for 18-year-old Mohammed Usman. From speaking to more than 12,000 people at a packed Wembley Stadium to travelling to India for volunteer work, the motivated teen says the experiences have ‘changed his life’. And now, following a recent fundraising project at his school, Mohammed has broken another record as he raised more than £1,300 for ‘Free the Children Charity’. The Grange Technology College student has been selling hand-crafted Rafiki chains, made by Maasai in Kenya, at the school for six weeks and has seen the bands become somewhat of a craze amongst students and pupils. Following this project, Mohammed was nominated for the Children of Courage’s fundraising award by the aforementioned charity, for his ongoing work. Speaking about the awards, Mohammed said he
was very proud to have received a nomination which was completely unexpected. “When I got told that I had been nominated for the Yorkshire Children of Courage award it blew me away,” he said.
FUNDRAISER: Mohammed Usman had been selling Rafiki chains in his school for six weeks and raised more than £1,300 to help fund clean water, food, healthcare and education in Kenya
“To be recognised is a great honour. The work I did in school with the Rafiki chains was not for this kind of recognition but to help those in need. “For me, the main focus of the project was helping
raise funds for education. We are blessed to have the education we have here and I wanted to do something to help others.” Earlier this week, Mohammed was once again propelled into the spotlight for his volunteering efforts as he was told that he would be receiving the Diana Award. The only charity which bears the name of the late Princess Diana, the Diana Award recognises inspirational and socially active youths in society. Mohammed will receive his official accolade at an event in the capital in December as he continues his work with Free the Children. “These awards are a real honour to receive and they only motivate me more to continue with the volunteering efforts,” he said. “When I went to India, I could see for myself how different the situation is there compared to here. “Children walk one or two hours just to get to school whereas people here complain about waking up ten minutes early. “These experiences are life-changing to see firsthand and I have to thank ‘Save the Children’ for allowing me to take part in some amazing events.”

ACTION: Production crews set up in Lumb Hill Mills which was transformed into the Ukrainian Embassy
FILM: Producer, Vashu Bhagnani, enjoyed his time in Bradford during the shooting of ‘Welcome to Karachi’
‘It’s a wrap’ Bradford’s Bollywood shooting comes to a close After two weeks of filming in Bradford, the ‘Welcome to Karachi’ crew are heading south to continue production in Birmingham and London. The Bollywood action-comedy, expected to release in 2015, has had aspects filmed in local places from the Bradford Bazaar to Little Germany, whilst Lumb Hill Mills was even temporarily transformed into the Ukrainian Embassy earlier this week. Meanwhile, during the shooting more than 500 lucky Bradfordians in total were used as extras and will appear in the film upon its release. Of course, Bollywood stars such as Arshad Warsi will be taking centre stage in the production and can be seen speaking, running and even shooting guns in Bradford. Producer, Vashu Bhagnani, told the Asian Express he has enjoyed his time in the West Yorkshire city and thanked all the local people for their warm hospitality during the crew’s stay. “We were filming in Bradford last night in Thornbury for the final time
before we move on with the shooting,” he said. “The city has been a beautiful place and we have been welcomed by everyone here so it has been a very good experience for me. “At the Bradford Bazaar we filmed an action scene and the location was very good as well as the support from a lot of local people.” Explaining where the star-cast will head next, Mr Bhagnani added: “On
Wednesday we go down to Birmingham for nine or ten days of filming before moving on to London to finish our filming in England. “I filmed in London last year for my film ‘Humshakals’ and really loved the place. A lot of the production for the film took place there so I look forward to going again. “As for Birmingham I have never actually been so it will be a whole

As well as encouraging young Muslims to write and pursue professions which employ such skills, an annual competition is held in which submissions are taken from young Muslims from 5 to 16 years of age.

Reporting hate crime ONLINE Creating better ‘understanding’ during National Hate Crime Awareness Week West Yorkshire Police alongside the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire have jointly launched a new campaign to highlight the issue of hate crime. The campaign launch coincides with the national Hate Crime Awareness Week which started on Saturday, 11th October, and aims to give people a better understanding of what hate crime is and what they can do about it. A new online reporting system is being introduced by the Force to help encourage victims and witnesses of hate incidents - whether it is verbal, physical or on social media - to report it to the police. The police are also making improvements to how information about hate incidents is recorded. A number of sub-categories for the recording of faith and
disability hate crimes are being introduced to get a better understanding of the impact of national and international events on local communities whilst improving and targeting services for victims. Assistant Chief Constable Andy Battle said: “Being who you are is not a crime, but being targeted because of race, sexual orientation, religion, disability or gender identity can be. “Hate crime takes many forms including verbal abuse, harassment, threats, intimidation, physical abuse and vandalism. It can have both a devastating effect on a single victim but also the potential to divide communities. “Everyone has a part to play in reporting hate incidents. It may
be that some incidents do not constitute a criminal offence but by letting us know we can ensure that support and advice is offered to those involved and action taken where appropriate. “The reporting of incidents also helps us build up a picture of any emerging patterns and helps us to police our communities.”
The online form can be found at www.westyorkshire.police.uk/hatecrimereportingform

Mughals Restaurant The number one party venue
special celebration needs a special venue, and for that birthday, anniversary or party to remember, there is no better place to visit than the famous Mughal’s Sweet Centre and Restaurant. With an upstairs banqueting room catering for dozens of guests at any one time, the premises are ideal for all special occasions, no matter how big or small. Newly refurbished earlier this year, visitors are able to sample the renowned Mughal’s delights in their relaxed environment, tucking in to some of the flavoursome sweets or traditional dishes. A newly extended private terrace has also been constructed to the second floor, allowing an intimate outdoor area to be used for those who wish to enjoy the sunshine on the warmer days. Every person is catered for at Mughals with disabled access available via a newly installed lift, and a private prayer room located onsite. Owner, Barber Rashid, says the refurbishment has already been warmly welcomed by guests, new and old, who are delighted to see Bradford’s favourite sweet centre back up and running. “The overall response since we reopened our doors has been fantastic,” he said. “Our new upstairs dining area has already drawn a lot of attention and we have had all types of bookings. “Our HMC approved in-house catering team have been providing all guests with some amazing food and treats and it really is great to be back.” For more than 25 years Mughals has served up some of the finest sweets and tastiest meals out of its Leeds Road premises. After its major refurbishment, which took four months to complete, the restaurant finally achieved the setting to perfectly complement its famous menu. The modern decor may be eye-catching but rest assured, the same traditional tastes, that helped Mughals garner its fantastic reputation over the past three decades, still remain today. All dishes, from curries to breakfasts, and of course the sweets, are prepared onsite with specific attention to detail given to every order. Sweets are even baked up at the new preparation stand allowing customers to see how some of the scrumptious treats are made firsthand. So, if you are planning a reception or celebration, there is only one place you need to look to ensure everybody has the perfect party experience – Mughals.

Creative Property
L
ooking to sell your house fast and need a trusted buying agent to help you find the quickest sale possible? Well look no further than Creative Property. Set up 18 months ago, the letting and buying agents have helped families through some of their toughest times, selling homes and helping with relocations to one of their many properties. The Bradford-based agents have a number of private links to networking investors who can make a cash offer on a home within 24 hours to ease money worries of the current owner. Unlike an estate agent, who would place the property on the market and organise viewings – a long and costly process – the Creative Property team aim to get you the money you need, as fast as possible. Simply get the house valued by the agents, and receive an offer within a day. Meanwhile, dozens of properties are available to be let out to ensure you still have a safe, comfortable place to lay your head whilst searching for a new home. Property consultants, Raj Limbachia and Paul Smith, run the business from their Leeds Road site and have decades of industry knowledge between them.
After building up a sizeable portfolio of properties, the pair decided to expand the business last year to help new and existing landlords manage their properties effectively. Caring for every home like it is their own, Mr Limbachia explained how important it was to ensure the needs of the landlords and tenants are always at the top of the agenda. “What we do here, compared to a lot of other letting agents, is we strive to create win-win situations,” he said. “Certain landlords can’t afford to pay the big fees that it is going to cost to rent the house out, whilst many tenants often can’t afford the rent on homes. “We are not purely profit driven like a lot of agents are and we always look to compromise between the landlord and the tenant to give both parties exactly what they want and need.” He added: “Our service is very personal and the way we handle the landlords is key to everything we do. If we are buying properties, we can walk the home owner through the whole quick process or if we are just looking after their property they can call us any time for support.” Creative Property is always on the lookout for new properties and if you would like to receive a quick cash offer today, contact the team now.

It’s just not fair A
party can be enriched through the provision of goods or services which have been freely accepted or requested. Where that party has unfairly profited at the expense of another party, the law of unjust enrichment will operate to reverse that unfair profit. In order to establish a valid claim, a Claimant must show that a Defendant has received some kind of benefit at the Claimant’s expense and that this was unfair. If, for example, a contract is void and unenforceable, it is nevertheless just for any work done or goods supplied to be paid for. In the case of Benedetti –v- Sawiris, the Defendant sought to acquire a valuable Italian energy company with the assistance of the Claimant. The parties signed an Acquisition Agreement which included provision for the Claimant’s remuneration. Whilst the transaction did not proceed as originally envisaged, the Claimant continued to provide assistance in the very different circumstances that the parties found themselves in. The Defendant was offered a payment of €75.1 million which he rejected and no alternative remuneration was agreed before the completion of the transaction. As part of the transaction, a payment of €67 million had been made to a company controlled by the Claimant for third party expenses which were subsequently not incurred. A claim for unjust enrichment is not a claim for compensation for loss, but for recovery of a benefit unjust gained by one party at the expense of another party. Where services are provided but there is no valid contract in place
between the parties, the starting point in valuing unjust enrichment is the objective market value of the services provided. A benefit is not always worth the market value to a Defendant and so it is open to a Defendant to adduce evidence that the benefit was valued at less than the market value, using the principle of subjective devaluation. The Court would not however entertain a claim that a Defendant should pay more than the market value where that party was found to have valued the services particularly highly. In this case, the Court found that the Claimant was entitled to the market rate of €36.3 million for the services he had provided. As the Claimant had already received €67 million, which was in excess of the market value of the services provided, he was not entitled to any further payment. Where there is no valid or enforceable contract, the Court will consider what a reasonable person would pay for the work, goods or services in the Defendant’s position. When considering a claim for unjust enrichment, the Court will determine the level of the Defendant’s gain, valued at the time when it was made. Where services have been provided, the Court will award an amount on the basis of what is deserved (known as quantum meruit). This will be an amount calculated on the basis of general market conditions, taking into account the value of the services provided but disregarding any eventual profit. We at Blacks can assist with the drafting of all types of contracts and deal with any disputes arising.

I
t is a simple fact that almost half of your life is spent in bed so why settle for anything other than the best when deciding upon where you lay your head at night. Madisons Bed Centre may have only been operating from Armley Road for the past two years, providing high quality furnishings to customers across the county. Yet, the history behind the business, and the man in charge, stretches back many more decades. Mohammed Iqbal currently runs the store with a team of employees and has been involved in the furniture industry since he was just 17-years-old, working alongside his father at Bradford’s muchloved IGI Furniture. Owned by Mr Iqbal’s father, who was known locally as ‘Haji’ Ismail, IGI setup in 1975 and grew into the city’s largest independent furniture
business, competing with national and international companies. After merging with the family’s other business, Madisons Leather Gallery, IGI furniture continued to excel and work as a much loved and well respected site in Bradford for the quality of service and prices provided. Now, those same attributes have been passed on to Armley’s Madisons Bed Centre with Mr Iqbal once again at the forefront of the business. With less focus on price, and more on the service and quality provided to customers, Madisons bears a clear resemblance for those who once shopped at IGI Furniture. Free assembly and delivery is available on selected designs in stock, with some models even able to be shipped out the same day to locations across the county. Having spent his entire working life in the
furniture business, Mr Iqbal explained how important it was to ensure customers choose the right bed every time. “If you’re working hard you need a good night sleep, it’s that simple,” he said. “Half your life is spent in bed so it is very important to have a good night’s sleep. “The way to achieve this is by having a good bed so that you wake up feeling better than the day before and fresh to start the new day. “It may cost a little bit more initially for the higher quality beds, but people who can appreciate that will be saving money in the long term, I guarantee it.” There is a bed for every person, and every pocket, at Madisons, and with the showroom set for a massive expansion in the near future, there has never been a better time to find your dream bed.

INQUEST: Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Abbas Khan was found hanging in a cell in Syria after being detained as a suspected terrorist. His family insists he was murdered
Dr Abbas Khan inquest Inquest hears how mother travelled to Syria, kissed the feet of officials begging them to release her son By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
An inquest into the death of a British orthopaedic surgeon, heard that sources inside Syria said that his death was not a suicide. Father-of-two, 32-year-old Abbas Khan, from Streatham, south London died while in detention in Damascus last December after being held for almost a year. The 32-year-old orthopaedic surgeon had been captured on 22nd November 2012, while out for a walk while working in a hospital in Aleppo to help civil war victims. He had travelled from Turkey to help victims of hospital bombings. He died in his cell in a high security prison on 16th December last year and the Syrian government claimed he committed suicide – just days before he was due to be released – but the family have always claimed he was murdered. The inquest heard how "Superhuman" efforts were made by the family of to secure his release before his death in a Syrian prison. The UK Foreign Office said he was "in effect murdered" but the Syrian authorities claim he took his own life. At the start of the inquest, the chief coroner, Judge Peter Thornton, told jurors that the medic’s mother, Fatima, in particular had been “extraordinarily persistent”. Giving evidence in court, the orthopaedic surgeon's mother, Fatima Khan, said she went to Syria in July 2013 and visited a
number of embassies and prisons to trace her son. She would kiss the shoes of the officials she met and beg them to help her. She said some of the cars she travelled in came under sniper fire, adding: "I felt scared, but my son was here so I had to be brave". She finally saw him at the Court of Terrorism at the end of July. "I hugged him. He was a skeleton. He was in tears. I said, 'Look, mummy is here for you'. He said, 'Sorry, I shouldn't have come here, please take me home'," she said. Her son was missing a fingernail and his feet were completely burnt, Ms Khan said. When questioned over his injuries he replied: "This is nothing, I have suffered more than this'." Dr Khan later described how the conditions were "like hell" PERSISTENT: Jurors heard that the medic’s mother, Fatima Khan, in particular had been “extraordinarily persistent” in trying to get her son released from the high security prison in Syria
with cockroaches, mice and faeces on the floor, his mother said. He added he was beaten up by other inmates and interrogated by men who beat him with rubber hoses, the jury heard. Chief coroner Judge Peter Thornton said the father of two was found "allegedly hanged" while in custody in Damascus. Mr Khan's family has always maintained he was murdered, despite the Syrian authorities' assertions he killed himself. The coroner said the main issues for the jury to consider after hearing all the evidence were likely to be: did Dr Khan take his own life, or was he "forced in some way by his captors to take his own life against his will", or was he "unlawfully killed" by his captors? The inquest at the Royal Courts of Justice is set to last three weeks.

Health Minister Jeremy Hunt said on Monday Britain could expect to see "a handful" of Ebola cases over the next three months, partly due to its status as a popular travel destination. The Ebola outbreak, the worst on record, has killed more than 4,000 people, mostly in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. The screening process at London Heathrow will involve passengers who have traveled to the affected area filling out questionnaires to discover any possible exposure to the virus and undertaking temperature checks if necessary. While there are no direct flights into Britain from the region, many passengers travel to London using indirect flights via other transport hubs. Hunt said the screening was expected to reach 89 percent of those arriving from the affected areas. By the end of next week the program will be extended to London's Gatwick airport and the Eurostar rail link to Europe. Anyone found to have recent

£750,000 competition announced to help students with clever ideas Enterprising university students will bid for £750,000, in a new competition designed to encourage the practical use of intellectual property (IP) in their business ideas. Launched this week, the StudentshIP Enterprise Awards will provide funding, ranging from £10,000 up to £100,000, for university projects that bring enterprising students, businesses, and their local community together to work on innovative projects. In-house projects or collaborations with other universities or businesses that create, manage or exploit intellectual property will all be considered. Award winners will increase their understanding of the value and use of intellectual property, so the next generation of graduates are better equipped to enter the world of modern business and make the most of their unique ideas. Minister for Intellectual Property, Baroness Neville-Rolfe, a former business leader said: “The UK invests more in ideas and knowledge than machinery or buildings, so it is vital that the next generation of business-people and entrepreneurs really understand the value of intellectual property and how it can help them make the most of their creativity. “This new competition will encourage enterprising students and academics to collaborate, so that their ideas for creating and exploiting intellectual property can be turned into reality and business opportunities. This is our chance to spot, support and develop the skills of the people who will be fuelling our future economy.” The competition will run from today until 12 December 2014, with finalists announced in January and the winners in March 2015. Missing Teen
Schoolgirl not seen since last week Police in Walsall are appealing for the public’s help to find a 14-year-old girl missing from her home in Caldmore, as the concern around her safety continues to increase. Umerubab Irani was last seen at her house in Hart Street at 6pm on 6th October, when she headed out of the home, telling her parents she was going to see a friend. When she failed to return that evening, her parents made numerous efforts to try and find her before reporting her missing to the police the following day. Sergeant Joanne Wilkinson from Walsall police station said this is the longest time the teen has been missing and the police are appealing for anyone with any information as to Umerubab’s whereabouts to come forward. Sgt Wilkinson said: “We are doing all we can to trace Umerubab, who sometimes calls herself Amira or
Hanna, and has links to Dudley, Manchester and Nottingham. “However, our inquiries lead us to believe she is still in the West Midlands area and officers are focusing their missing person investigation here. “Umerubab is described as Asian, 5ft 9ins tall, with long straight, black hair and looks older than her years. She was last seen wearing white leggings, a tiger print tshirt, black hooded jacket and black sandals. “While she has gone missing before, this is the longest time she has left home without making contact and we - along with her family – are growing increasingly concerned about her. “I would urge Umerubab to call us and just let us know she is safe and well.” Anyone who sees the missing girl is asked to call Walsall Police on 101 or the charity Missing People on 116 000.

October 2014 - 2nd Edition LEAVE: The Top Gear crew were pelted for making references to the 1982 Falklands war
Top Gear crew abandon site after being pelted with stones The cast and crew of TV's Top Gear had to abandon their cars amid furious protests and threats at the roadside and flee Argentina after being pelted with stones by an angry crowd. The attack happened after it emerged they were using a vehicle with a number plate apparently referring to the Falklands War. That vehicle - a Porsche with the registration number H982 FKL which some people suggested could refer to the Falklands conflict of 1982 - was among those abandoned. Apparantly the Top Gear team comprising of 36 people – 28 Brits including the three presenters and eight Argentinians and Chileans who had been hired locally, were ordered to leave the country by the Foreign Affairs Ministry. They left in such a hurry, via their five star hotel service door. that they even forgot a computer. BBC bosses have said the number plate was merely a coincidence and was not chosen deliberately, but it led to protests in Argentina, including a demonstration by a group of war veterans who protested outside the hotel used by the show’s team. The programme has already run into problems this year, with one edition found to be in breach of O f c o m ' s broadcasting code for the use of a racially offensive term during a twopart special filmed in Burma, following a complaint from a viewer.
And presenter Jeremy Clarkson apologised after unbroadcast footage emerged in which he appeared to use the n-word, although he denied actually saying it. The team from the BBC Two show are in South America filming a special on a remote highway passing through Chile and Argentina. A story about their visit in the Patagonian daily newspaper Diario Jornada is headlined: "Top Gear is filming in Patagonia and there's controversy." The paper said: "Even though the BBC authorities asked the popular presenter Jeremy Clarkson to behave himself during his time in Argentina, he chose to use the provocative number plate H982 FKL on his Porsche, in reference to 1982 Falklands (Malvinas)." But the executive producer of Top Gear, Andy Wilman, said: "Top Gear production purchased three cars for a forthcoming programme; to suggest that this car was either chosen for its number plate, or that an alternative number plate was substituted for the original, is completely untrue."
Palestine is a ‘State’
In a historic vote held on Monday, Britain’s lawmakers have voted in favour of recognising Palestine as its own separate state, a move which adds pressure for a two-state solution to the ongoing IsraeliPalestinian conflict. By a vote of 274 to 12, legislators in the House of Commons supported the motion to call on the nation’s government to ‘recognize the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel’. Prime Minister David Cameron and other government leaders abstained, whilst Middle East Minister, Tobias Ellwood, added that the UK will recognise the state when it would help bring about peace. However, the government says the vote will not change Britain's official diplomatic stance. Earlier this month Sweden's new Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said his government would recognize the state of Palestine, an announcement that drew praise from Palestinian officials and criticism from Israel.

OUTSTANDING: “It's not the life that matters, it's the courage that you bring to it" - the late Daljit Singh Shergill
Sikh leader passes away President Daljit Singh Shergill, known as Shergill Sahib to hundreds of thousands of adherents worldwide, left his physical body at 8pm GMT on 6th October 2014. His passing took place at Queen Elizabeth Hospital surrounded by family and friends. The cause of death was complications due to heart failure. He was 70 years-old. An outstanding pioneer in many fields with a deep and compassionate insight into the human condition, he established permanent institutions, created spectacular events, and produced a prolific Sikh profile doing Community Work. The first President to serve consistently a term of 20 years at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick, he forged links with the wider community on interfaith issues, sat on race consultative committees and set up the first Sikh welfare provision within the Gurdwara. When he arrived in the West Midlands in 1961, to meet his younger brother and father who had fought in World War II, he only had five pounds in his pocket on his arrival. He was an active custodian and was part of a union fighting injustices in the workplace. He was a formidable sportsman and played tug of war professionally as a team captain. A deeply devoted Sikh, Shergill Sahib has been an inspiration and icon, who motivated thousands to embrace the Sikh way of life. Through his personal efforts, the Sikh community in Smethwick started to see great changes taking place. Shergill Sahib became President in 1984. He raised £1.4 million before starting
work on the Gurdwara Sahib in the nineties, which was completed in 2002. This remarkable holy building changed the skyline of Smethwick. He put Smethwick Gurdwara on the international stage. Traveling extensively in the eighties, Shergill Sahib crusaded tirelessly to educate, uplift and enlighten everyone he met. His basic message was "Freedom is your birth-right, take Amrit and be free from kaljug." He went to Romania with five Singh's to distribute aid. He financially supported Khalsa Aid and United Sikhs after the Tsunami, when they required local support. Shergill Sahib became Sandwell Sports Personality of the Year for all his hard work in starting the first Sikh Games under the banner of Shaheedi Tournaments, which still take place in the UK. Joining the Labour Party as a member, he had very close ties with Lord Kang, Councillor Hussain, Adrian Bailey, Tom Watson, John Spellar and Darren Copper. Working closely to start a Sikh school in Smethwick was one of his wishes. He was a champion of women's rights, and believed that it is women who are the backbone of society since 1992 when he inaugurated Samaj Sadhar, which helps Sikh families and women suffering domestic violence with mediation in marriage breakdown. He kept community relations at the forefront he arranged a meeting with police and community regarding the Besti play to bring down tension and to find a solution at the time. Over the years he worked very closely with many organisations,
especially Sikh Federation. Bhai Amrik Singh was like a brother to him, and always supported all issues facing Sikhs in the UK and abroad. He established the vision of SYCC 2002 the first of its kind in UK it was providing services to the community, youth empowerment programmes, education classes, gym, IT lab and much more this project cost 1m which was lottery funded. Standing six feet four, his powerful and dynamic presence dominated any gathering. Fearless, outspoken yet humble, he could be both charming and daunting as the occasion required. His openhearted acceptance of everyone along with an uncompromising insistence upon excellence made him a formidable sikh leader. The Tribune link below states that in 2003, Shergill Sahib had wanted to form a Sikh Council, which today has become a reality and represent British Sikhs in Parliament. In accordance with Sikh tradition, and his wishes, cremation will take place on Wednesday, 15th October at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick at 1:45pm till 2:45pm then 3.15pm at Sandwell Crematorium then back to GNGSmethwick. Condolences have been received from the Sikh Council UK, Management Committee of Gurdwara's around the World, Sikh Federation, Lord Mike Whitby on behalf of PM David Cameron, Tom Watson on Behalf of Ed Miliband and the local Labour MP, Councilors, and Mr/Mrs Tauque, Lieutenant to the Queen.

Middle-East violence spreads as Turkey bombs Kurdish militants War against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq threatened to spill into Turkey, where reports emerged that the air force had bombed Kurdish fighters furious at Ankara's refusal to help protect their kin in Syria. At least 35 people were killed in riots last week when members of Turkey's 15-million-strong Kurdish minority rose up in anger at the government for refusing to help defend the Syrian border town of Kobani from an Islamic State assault. The jailed leader of Turkey's banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has threatened to call off talks to end a decades-old insurgency in Turkey if no progress is made by Wednesday 14th October. Hurriyet newspaper's website said Turkish warplanes had hit PKK targets in Turkey on Sunday, the first such strikes since a peace process began in Turkey two years ago. The strikes were also reported by media sympathetic to the PKK. A U.S.-led coalition is launching air strikes against Islamic State fighters who control swathes of Syria and seized much of northern Iraq in recent months. The turmoil in Turkey shows the danger of spillover from two complex multi-sided civil wars in which every country in the Middle East has a stake. Ankara has refused to join the U.S.-led military coalition against Islamic State unless it also confronts Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. On Monday it denied U.S. assertions that it had agreed to let American planes take off from its air bases.
Meanwhile, Islamic State fighters have been fighting their way into the mainly Kurdish Syrian border town of Kobani, where the United Nations says thousands could be massacred within full view of Turkish tanks that have done nothing to intervene. The fate of Kobani could wreck efforts by the Turkish government to end a three decades long insurgency by PKK militants, a conflict that killed 40,000 people but largely ended with the start of a peace process in 2012. There was no immediate comment from the military on the report that it bombed Kurdish positions, once a regular occurrence in southeast Turkey but something that had not taken place for two years. Hurriyet said the air strikes on Sunday caused "major damage" to the PKK. They were launched after three days of PKK attacks on a military outpost in Hakkari province near the Iraqi border, it added. It said the PKK had attacked the outpost for three days with heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. The general staff said in a statement it had "opened fired immediately in retaliation in the strongest terms" after PKK attacks in the area, but did not mention air strikes. Jailed PKK co-founder Abdullah Ocalan has said peace talks between his group and the Turkish state could come to an end by Wednesday. After visiting him in jail last week, Ocalan's brother Mehmet told reporters the PKK leader had said: "We will wait until Oct. 15. We will
Western clothing warned of working conditions
Inspectors hired by a group of Western clothing brands have found safety problems at all the Bangladesh factories they visited as part of an initiative launched after a building collapse last year killed more than 1,100 workers. The Accord for Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh is seeking remedial action after identifying more than 80,000 safety issues, while the country's $22 billion garment industry grapples with slowing
export growth as buyers turn to India, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia because of concerns over workshop safety, higher wages and political instability. More than 180 clothing brands and retailers, including the world's biggest fashion chains Inditex and H&M, joined the Accord that was set up after the disaster at the Rana Plaza in April 2013 and the body said it has now completed initial inspections of 1,106 factories.

convey to the visiting delegations our thoughts. After that there will be nothing we can do." The peace process with the Kurds is one of the main initiatives of President Tayyip Erdogan's decade in power, and its potential collapse shows the difficulty Turkey has had in designing a Syria policy. Turkey has already taken in some 1.2 million refugees from Syria's three-year civil war, including 200,000 Kurds who fled the area around Kobani in recent weeks. U.S. officials have expressed frustration at Erdogan's refusal to help them fight against Islamic State. The battle for Kobani has grinded for nearly a month, with Islamic State slowly advancing and now in control of much of the town. Kurdish fighters known as Popular Protection Units (YPG), allies of the PKK, are demanding Turkey allow arms across the border to help them resupply. The U.S.-led coalition has hit Islamic State positions in and around the town but failed to halt the advance. At least six air strikes were heard from the Turkish side of the border on Tuesday. Gunfire and shelling were audible from the Turkish side, where Kurds, many with relatives fighting in Kobani, have maintained a vigil, watching the fighting from hillsides. Obama will discuss a strategy to counter Islamic State this week, with military leaders from 20 countries, including Turkey, Arab states and Western allies, amid growing pressure to do more to stop the militants' advance.
A mosque was set alight in a suspected arson attack in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday whilst the name of an Israeli vigilante group called ‘price tag’ was found scribbled on an outside wall, Palestinian officials and witnesses said. Israeli police said they were investigating the incident, which took place in Aqraba, a village east of Nablus. Residents told Reuters they noticed smoke
coming from the building before dawn and rushed to douse the flames, which damaged a carpet and blackened one of the walls. “If we hadn't rushed to put out the fire the entire building could have gone up in flames,” said Maher Fares, a villager. Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian official from the Nablus area, said he suspected Jewish settlers in the area had carried out the attack.

Obscure laws to be repealed
If you happen to unearth treasure worth even as little as 10 rupees in India, don't even think of pocketing it that's because under a law introduced by the former British colonial rulers, it still belongs to ‘Her Majesty’. Now, however, the Treasure Trove Act of 1878 and nearly 300 other outdated laws are set to be repealed in
the largest-ever cull of rules that make India one of the most puzzling places in the world to do business. New Prime Minister Narendra Modi is hoping that less regulation and faster decision-making will lift India from its ranking of 134 out of 189 countries on the World Bank's ease of doing business table into the top 50 and attract investors.
Other onscure laws include: flying kites or balloons without police permission is illegal across India as they are classified as an ‘aircraft’ under a 1934 act, whilst, under the Motor Vehicles Act, the state of Andhra Pradesh enacted a law that a motor inspector must have a clean set of teeth and anyone with a ‘pigeon chest, knock knees, flat foot, hammer toes and fractured limbs’ will be disqualified.

Israeli police clashed with Palestinian protesters and shut down access to Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque compound in a deepening dispute over access to the area, the third holiest shrine in Islam, which is also revered by Jews. The site in Jerusalem's walled Old City has seen a marked increase in unrest in recent days as Orthodox Jews have pushed for easier access to visit the area, which they revere as the site of two destroyed biblical temples. Tensions frequently rise at this time of year, during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, when in ancient times there would be a pilgrimage to the temple. While small groups of Jewish visitors are allowed, they are not permitted to pray. Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said security forces went to the elevated compound after receiving information that Palestinian protesters planned to disrupt the visits. Omar Kiswani, the director of al-Aqsa mosque, said Israeli police fired tear gas and used rubber bullets to suppress the protesters, who took refuge inside the mosque. He said sound bombs detonated inside the mosque had destroyed several ancient chandeliers. TV footage recorded several loud blasts and showed police in riot gear pushing Palestinians away from the area around the mosque. Rosenfeld said protesters inside had bombarded Israeli forces with stones and projectiles.
Palestinians have grown aggrieved by the increasing number of visits to the site by Orthodox Jews, a programme that is actively supported by Moshe Feiglin, an outspoken member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party. Those that visit are escorted by Israeli police. If any of them pray, they are supposed to be expelled from the area. The entire compound - which Muslims refer to as the Noble Sanctuary and Jews call the Temple Mount - has been managed by Islamic authorities since the 12th century and Israel has long been careful not to attempt to alter the status quo. However, that has not calmed Palestinian concerns that the increasing number of visits by non-Muslims to the site will slowly lead to changes in however the complex is administered. Netanyahu denied on Monday 13th October that there were any moves afoot to restrict Muslims' access to the compound and blamed "Palestinian extremists" for the violence. "I am committed and Israel is committed to maintaining the status quo exactly as it has been for many decades," he said. A visit to al-Aqsa in 2000 by thenIsraeli right-wing opposition leader Ariel Sharon was seen as serious provocation by Palestinians and a contributing factor to the five-year uprising or Intifada that followed the collapse of peace talks.

Mecca selfie PIC: A Muslim pilgrim prays as another takes a photo with his mobile phone at the Grand Mosque during Tawaf al-Wadaa (Farewell Tawaf) on the last day of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in the holy city of Mecc
Many frown upon pilgrims snapping themselves between prayers during Hajj
It’s one of the biggest trends taking over the social media world, and now during the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage visitors to the holy sites couldn’t resist the urge to take a selfie. Between calls for forgiveness from God, the word “selfie” echoes through the white marble halls inside the Grand Mosque in Mecca where pilgrims walk around the Kaaba, the black-clad cube towards which the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims face to pray. “I’m taking a selfie with Kaaba behind me to post on my Facebook so my family and friends can see me. That’s the way we communicate these days — no need to call,” said Mehmet Dawoud, a Turkish student. To many, selfies are just another way to preserve the memory of being in a holy site and also share the experience in the trendiest of ways with loved ones. “Selfies are just a way to make the memory last in the coolest possible way. Haj is always seen as something very serious and for older people. Selfies make it cool again,” said Amir Marouf, a 30 year old Egyptian architect. However, to some Saudi clerics who strictly follow the ultra-conservative Wahhabi school of Sunni Islam, selfies are a misuse of time when pilgrims should concentrate on praying. Inside the Grand Mosque you occasionally hear a cleric urging selfie takers: “Focus! Prayer is more important.” Other Saudi clerics view the phenomenon as harmless and say it does not contradict any of Islam’s principles. “There’s no harm in these photos. People just want to have fun and remember being in the holy sites,” said Sheikh Abdallah bin Ali basfar, a local religious lecturer in Mena.

India bans import of all animal-tested cosmetics After intensive efforts by a number of groups, India has announced the ban on importing animal-tested cosmetics, which will come into effect from November this year. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and others, the Indian Ministry of Health & Family Welfare said that the move will save millions of animals from being blinded, poisoned and killed in cruel and useless tests for products sold to India's billion-plus population. The new rule states, "135-B. Import of cosmetics tested on animals prohibited. – No cosmetic
that has been tested on animals after the commencement of the Drugs and Cosmetics (Fifth Amendment) Rules, 2014 shall be imported into the country". The move brings India up to speed with Israel, the UK and all other European Union nations, which have already banned the sale and marketing of animal-tested cosmetics. Earlier this year, the testing of cosmetics on animals was banned in India following efforts by PETA India and its international affiliates. "This is a message to the whole world that India will not tolerate blinding bunnies for shampoo, mascara and other 'beauty' products
– and this ruling now gives an upper hand to businesses that use superior, human-relevant, non-animal testing methods", says PETA UK Director Mimi Bekhechi. "We applaud India's Ministry of Health & Family Welfare for looking out for animals' interests and for championing modern
science." Pamela Anderson, Esha Gupta, Sonakshi Sinha, Evelyn Sharma, Anoushka Shankar, Poorna Jagannathan, Priya Anand, Neha Dhupia, Raveena Tandon-Thadani, Jacqueline Fernandez, Dia Mirza, R Madhavan, Rahul Khanna, Sunny Leone, Pooja Bhatt, Lara Dutta,

When asked what was special about his birthday, he replies, "My biggest happiness is Aaradhya (granddaughter) but she was sleeping when I went to Prateeksha. I have not met her yet. I would like to spend the day with her and the rest of the family." The contemplative star also shared his feelings on his blog. "The hour has passed and the greetings have poured in and the family has been with me and that is the greatest gift, if gifts were to be any judge

Hrithik Roshan as Paris Hilton's new love interest?
Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan could be Paris Hilton's new love interest... in a movie, that is. Roshan enjoyed a night out with the American socialite in Dubai recently when he flew down for the VIP launch of Cle Dubai, a new restaurant by celebrity chef Greg Malouf. After spending time with the Bang Bang star and tweeting about it, Hilton was quizzed by friend Sheeraz Hasan (founder of Hollywood.TV) about doing a film with Hrithik and playing his love interest, reports Times of India. Speaking about her meeting with the actor, Hilton said "Hrithik's a gentleman, very sweet and charming, and we hung out all night. “I have heard so much about Bollywood and Hrithik represented India in the most elegant and romantic way! I can't wait to go back to India. I love the culture, the people and the fashion... India rocks." Hilton has been approached by several Bollywood producers in the past to star in a Bollywood movie as well as record her next single with an Indian artiste. A film co-starring Roshan might just be the perfect launch vehicle for Hilton, in Bollywood. Can fans expect an announcement soon? Meanwhile, Roshan's latest release ‘Bang Bang’, an official remake of the Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz starrer ‘Knight & Day’, has turned out to be a big hit at the box office.

Indian film legend welcomed to Leeds As the hit theatre production, ‘Happy Birthday Sunita’, arrived in West Yorkshire last week, acting royalty, Shabana Azmi, took time out of her busy schedule to catch up with the Asian Express.
stories about them and their lives. When they go to western plays it doesn’t resonate but here, Rifco Arts have managed to create a whole new audience which was very exciting for me. Q) How are you finding touring the UK? A) I have done a play before at the National, called the Waiting Room, but I didn’t tour with it so this is the first time. It is very nice because all my costars, no matter which one, are people I have a very happy relationship with.
Q) Tell me about the play A) Happy Birthday Sunita is a play about a family that comes together to celebrate the 40th birthday of the daughter of the house who is still unmarried and living with the mother, Tejpal – who is the character that I am playing. You discover that actually it is a dysfunctional family and all the members are wearing masks in a sense and pretending to be something which they are not. Then Tejpal, who is the matriarch of the family because her husband has gone to India, announces that she has had enough of role playing and she’s done with duty and responsibility and will now follow her heart. This comes as a huge shock to the family because they have only ever seen her as ‘mum’ and never as a person in her own right. That in turn acts a catalyst of change for all the other members who drop their pretences and start living the dream which they had. The simple heart warming message of the film is it’s never too late to follow your dreams. Q) Tell me a bit more about Tejpal A) Tejpal is a woman who came to London around 30 years ago and is now making a living by being a single parent because her husband has not been there for a long time. She works in a doctor’s surgery three days a week and she is the quintessential mother who raises children and is there to make sure they are raised correctly. However, you see glimpses in her that she is not the regular type of person you would imagine. By saying she is going to change her life the audience really embraces her character which is very empowering.
Q) Why should people come and see this film? A) Because I think it has a heartwarming message for everybody. It is located within the British Asian community but it is universal because it is what women of a certain age are forced to role play as to what the mother and care giver is supposed to be. Q) How did you get involved with this There is hope, truth and a bit of project? joy. It is a comedy and the audience A) I was aware of the work of the have really enjoyed it so far. director, Pravesh Kumar which was one reason. Q) How is it different for you to appear in It is also very heartening to see film and theatre? how Rifco arts has actually A) I think it is very similar for managed to convert, what was a everybody in that you essentially largely British Asian community find the character in the same that only looked at Bollywood process except that in theatre, due to cinema, to actually becoming a the long rehearsal process you get theatre-going audience by writing compared to film, you get to

discover it more organically. The thrill of performing in front of a live audience as well gives you a knot in the stomach every time you go up on stage. Of course film has its own challenges too. If you asked me whether I thought of myself as a film actor or a theatre actor it is definitely film. But I was only four-months old when my mother used to strap me to her back and take me to the theatre because she was an actress and my father was the head of the largest theatre group in the world. I almost got a love for it through a process of osmosis.
Q) How do you view the standard of the current Bollywood industry? A) I think it is improving a great deal and that within mainstream cinema there has been a lot of change. Earlier, we used to do 12 films at a time but obviously you can’t do them justice because you couldn’t give any time to develop a part – it was enough to just say your lines and that was it. Today now, even within the mainstream cinema, actors are demanding much more of themselves, directors are demanding much more of everyone and all kinds of films are being made in India for all ages and for all sections of society so it is a very happy time to be involved.
Q) Would you ever contemplate directing or producing? A) It is too easy being an actor Q) How has the role of women changed? [laughs]. I don’t want to get into the A) Of course there have been huge job of having to produce or direct changes. You had a film in the 60’s because there is so much effort which was centred around the involved. woman but was called ‘Main Chup Rahoongi’, which means ‘I will Q) What about writing? remain silent’ being considered a A) Well my husband is a writer and virtue for the woman but today he is a very good writer actually. The nobody wants to see that. entire family is in the business really. There are many more empowered My brother is a cameraman, my women in films; women who are sister is an actress, my mother is an working, doing much more than just actress, my father was a writer, both playing an appendage to the heroes. my children are directors and their That said, there is still much more son is an actor. Dynamic performance & power for the new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS
Porsche porsche 911 Carrera GTS
By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk
Porsche today announces the second generation of the 911 Carrera GTS, ahead of its arrival in showrooms this November. It will join the acclaimed Boxster GTS, Cayman GTS and Panamera GTS in the range of sports cars from Stuttgart. Each of the four new 911 Carrera GTS models – a Coupé and a Cabriolet, available with either rearwheel or all-wheel drive – build on the established core values of the iconic rear-engined 911 by adding further technical features to generate even higher levels of dynamic performance and driving enjoyment. Under the rear engine lid lies an evocative flat-six power unit, tuned to develop 430 hp, an increase of 30 hp over the Carrera S. This is
combined with the Sport Chrono package offering dynamic engine mounts, and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) damper system which lowers the car's ride height by ten millimetres. Improved efficiency has also led to quicker acceleration and higher
top speeds, and Combined fuel consumption figures remain unchanged from the favourable level of the S models. For example, when combined with the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch gearbox, the 911 Carrera GTS can return 32.5 mpg
and also sprint from zero to 62 mph in 4.0 seconds (Cabriolet: 4.2 seconds). With the standard sevenspeed manual transmission and rearwheel drive, a top speed of 198 mph is possible. The exteriors of the new 911 Carrera GTS – like other GTS

models – differ significantly from the other Carrera models. All versions feature the 911 Carrera 4 body with wide-flared rear wheel arches and a wider track. Also standard are 20-inch diameter alloy wheels with centre-lock mechanism, painted in an exclusive matt black finish. Accentuating the nose styling are special trim elements and smoked bi-Xenon headlights with the addition of the Porsche Dynamic Lighting System (PDLS). The air intake grille on the rear engine lid features bespoke GTS black trim strips and black chrome-plated exhaust tailpipes add to the strong visual identity. Further aural distinction is delivered via the standard sports exhaust system, which delivers an unmistakable GTS sound.

Prius+, Europe’s market-leading seven-seat hybrid MPV, is being regroomed for 2015 with new styling details, equipment features and colour choices. The revised front-end features a new upper grille and a more prominent Toyota badge that extends the forward line of the bonnet. There are new LED headlights, too, which use a cylindrical projector for both high and low beam. Their slim profile and contrasting black and chrome plating give Prius+ a distinctive sharp-eyed appearance. The lower grille adopts the trapezoid shape that’s a common feature of the latest Toyota models. With a gloss black metallic finish, it adds emphasis to the car’s broad stance. The impression of width is reinforced by a re-working of the bumper corners, given extra emphasis in a flowing form that extends from the headlights to the new air intakes and LED daytime running lights. At the rear there’s a new combination lamp design with “light guide” treatment and red inner lenses that give the car an individual lighting signature. This can be upgraded – Toyota Touch 2 with Go – to provide additional satellite navigation, live traffic information and, via Toyota’s online portal, an expanded range of connected services, text-to-speech function and 3D city modelling with landmark graphics. The equipment upgrade extends to the
availability of electric seat adjustment, a front centre armrest and Intelligent Park Assist. Safety features have also been improved with the introduction of an emergency brake signal, which triggers all side indicators in the event of sudden braking. Hill-start Assist Control is automatically activated when the car detects an uphill gradient. Toyota has also improved Prius+
ride and handling, making adjustments to the suspension damping force. New sound absorption material has been introduced in the side of the rear compartment to reduce noise intrusion in the cabin. The hybrid powertrain has been upgraded to comply with Euro6 emissions standards. Full details of the UK model range, specifications and prices will be announced nearer the on sale date.

Limited edition dazzles with extreme performance of Ferrari 458 but as a drop-top
A special Prancing Horse Dedicated to just 499 Ferrari collectors, the 458 Speciale A is the most powerful spider in Prancing Horse history, effortlessly marrying extreme performance with the sublime pleasure of drop-top driving. The 458 Speciale A sports the most powerful naturally-aspirated road-going V8 engine ever built by Ferrari. It punches out a massive 605 cv (135 cv/l specific power output) and 540 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm yet only generates 275 g/km of CO2 emissions. The three international Best Performance Engine awards the V8 has won are acknowledged on a special plaque in the cockpit. The new car sprints from 0-100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds and has a Fiorano lap time of 1’23”5. These superb results are thanks in great part to its front and rear active aerodynamics, the rigidity of a chassis that incorporates 10 aluminium alloys, and Side Slip Angle Control (SSC) which guarantees unparalleled sporty driving in all conditions, underscored by the seductively exhilarating signature Ferrari soundtrack. As is the case with all Prancing Horse cars, the 458 Speciale A’s sculpted forms are absolutely performance-oriented. In fact, a series of innovative and original bodywork solutions has made the 458 Speciale A the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari spider ever.
most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever built in Maranello and also sets a new specific power record (135 cv/l) for a road-going power unit of this type. These two figures alone speak volumes about the extraordinary prowess of this 4497 cc mid-rear engine. The work carried out on the car as a whole has also delivered an exceptional weight-to-power ratio of 2.21 kg/cv which results in such unparalleled performance levels as 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 3” (0 to 200 km/h in 9”5) and a Fiorano best lap time of just 1’23”5. To achieve these results, the 458 Speciale A’s combustion, mechanical and volumetric efficiency were all significantly improved with a focus on reaching ambitious targets such as boosting torque at all revs through upping the compression ratio to 14:1, the highest for an engine of this kind. The soundtrack, both inside and outside the car, is full-bodied and uncompromising too, thanks to the position of the tailpipes, the configuration of the silencers and the redesign of the inlet tract.
RETRACTABLE HARD TOP The 458 Speciale A adopts the innovative retractable hard top (RHT) that has become a signature of Ferrari spiders with this particular architecture. Extremely light, compact and functional, the RHT deploys and retracts in a record 14 seconds. Its mechanism is seamlessly smooth, POWERTRAIN giving the impression that its two Punching out 605 cv at 9000 rpm, sections simultaneously rotate. the 458 Speciale A’s engine is the The retracted roof only takes up
100 litres of space rather than the 150-200 litres required to stow a conventional hard top. The glass electric rear window can be adjusted regardless of whether the RHT is deployed or retracted. This ensures superb in-cabin comfort even at high speeds when the top is dropped. In fact, occupants can easily carry on a normal conversation at speeds of over 200 Km/h. When the top is retracting, the rear window automatically adjusts to its optimal position at around one third of its full height. This position was pinpointed through fluiddynamic simulations and wind tunnel testing using 1:1 scale models, and guarantees absolute maximum comfort as it prevents vortex creation behind occupants’ backs and the nape of their necks. VEHICLE DYNAMICS Record-breaking innovations were made to the 458 Speciale A’s electronics, brakes, suspensions and tyres also. Not only have they cut the car’s time over single laps, but also the repeatability of that performance on subsequent ones without demanding professional driving skills. The result is exceptional levels of pleasure behind the wheel. In terms of electronic control systems, the big news is the world premiere of Side Slip Angle Control (SSC) and improved F1 transmission gear-shift control. The dual-clutch transmission enhances the sporty feel and a reduction in response times means 40 per cent faster longitudinal acceleration with engine revs
adapting 20 per cent more rapidly as the car shifts up through the gears while, when downshifting, the transient time required for engine revs to match the gear ratio is 44 per cent faster. Every single component of the Brembo braking system has evolved and the solutions adopted for the LaFerrari have been adapted to suit it. Extreme Design calipers, HT2 discs with a high percentage of silicon and smaller front pads made from HY hybrid material are all new additions that add up to an 8 per cent reduction in stopping distances compared to the 458 Spider as well as more consistent performance under severe use. Michelin tyres designed specifically for the model guarantee a six per cent increase in grip and are made from a compound that boosts performance over a single lap in the dry, improves performance consistency over multiple laps and guarantees better grip in the wet. The forged 20” wheels are a new design and are over 12 kg lighter than the 458 Spider’s. EXTERIOR As is the case with all Prancing Horse cars, sculpture is absolutely performance-oriented. Most of the bodywork panels have been redesigned without modifying either the passenger cell or the signature design features of the car. The composite bumpers have been redesigned and the front bonnet now features two deep air outlets to channel away the air exiting the radiator. The air outlets to the side of the
headlight assemblies now also include three louvers reminiscent of the powerfully sporty Ferraris of the past, such as the 250 GTO and the F40. The rear features a Kamm tail with a full-width grille and twin exhausts. CABIN The cabin has a distinctive racinginspired atmosphere with the focus on eliminating all superfluous weight. This was achieved by adopting lightweight yet exclusive materials including Alcantara and carbon-fibre crafted with Ferrari’s signature artisanal sophistication. The cockpit plays on the overlapping of materials and forms in successive layers to visually break up the volumes and underscore the generous interior. The glove compartment on the dash has been replaced with convenient odds and ends pockets on the tunnel and doors, significantly streamlining the volumes in this area. Onboard ergonomics are now exceptionally functional, thanks to the use of the iconic bridge, a carbon-fibre wing that extends over the central tunnel section, angling the F1 gearbox controls towards the driver. The newly-designed seats have Sabelt carbon-fibre shells and boast excellent side bolstering thanks to an ergonomic design. The shoulderrests are trimmed in Alcantara for improved grip while seated, and the backrests and seat itself are padded with a breathable 3D fabric to guarantee excellent air circulation and comfort.

“The Ghibli Ermenegildo Zegna Edition is still ‘conceptual’ but absolutely feasible in terms of content and has the possibility of further colour combinations,” says Maserati CEO Harald Wester. “It is a demonstration of the commitment with which Maserati and Ermenegildo Zegna continue to think of an automotive product outside the classical schemes, in addition to confirming the foresight and bond that unites us.” Gildo Zegna, CEO of the Ermenegildo Zegna group added: “The collaboration with Maserati, which began a year ago with the launch of the Quattroporte Zegna Limited Edition. Now has its own natural evolution with the world debut of the Ghibli Ermenegildo Zegna Edition concept, with an innovative layout compared to the current Ghibli range due to the colour choices and materials. “Maserati and Zegna are two companies that share a historic industrial tradition and it is a source of pride for me that this partnership can celebrate the excellence of Made in Italy.” The Maserati Ghibli S Q4 dressed by Ermenegildo Zegna is painted in a new tri-layer colour and the 20" wheels are also in a specially developed colour. In the interior, the combination of the finest leather and precious Zegna yarns dominate, with the typical inevitable details of the two brands.

The vehicle has also been fitted with a number of new technologies that provide levels of comfort and convenience normally associated with large-vehicle segments. The unique-in-class panoramic sunroof, able to both tilt and fully open, enhances the comfort and the sense of space for occupants, filling the cabin with natural light and fresh air. The New Generation i20 is available with a choice of three Hyundai ‘Kappa’ petrol and two ‘U-II’ diesel power units. Proven powerplants have been carried over from the previousgeneration model with a number of improvements to enhance driveability
and ensure compliance with new Euro6 emission regulations while the 1.4-litre petrol engine is developed. A new Kappa 1.0-litre T-GDI downsized and turbocharged petrol engine will further enhance the New Generation i20 engine line-up in 2015. The new engine is the first of a new generation of downsized turbocharged petrol engines, offering enhanced performance, driving pleasure and efficiency. The 1.0 litre T-GDI engine, is able to produce up to 120 PS and 172 Nm of torque. Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to
take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the
country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.

Borussia Teeth 9 - 0 Half a Dozen Cousins
Haseeb Ahmed scored six goals to propel him into the top half of the league’s leading goal scorers as Borussia Teeth hammered Half a Dozen by nine goals. Ahmed’s tally was added to by a hat-trick from Hamza, which also took his goal tally to six for the season, following a master-class performance against the league strugglers. MOTM: Haseeb Ahmed’s six goals earned the talisman the man-of-the-match award this week.
Tetleys Tino 4 - 0 Al Aqs
More than a month had passed since Tetleys Tino last found the back of the net in a competitive game before last week’s thrashing of Al Aqs. The league’s second best defence had centre-half Hassan Noshi to thank for two sublime goals which partnered efforts from Shazad Hussain and Adeel to wrap up the game. Al Aqs will be disappointed to see their poor run of form continue after yet another sub-standard display. MOTM: Hassan Noshi has lifted Tetleys Tino since signing for the side and bagged two top class goals to round off an overall great performance.
Old Bacca Boys 2 - 1 Jubodhol
NFA take top spot A nine-goal thrashing, top of the table clash, and the end of a 30-day goal drought were the highlights of this week’s Soccer League UK action Hyde Park FC 1 - 2 NFA This week’s action was all about the top-of-the-table clash between Hyde Park FC and NFA, with the latter edging a three-goal thriller to steal top spot. It was NFA who started brightest, with two goals in the first half from
man-of-the-match, Kabir Miah, and Muhammed Lu, proving to be enough to seal the three points. The Rippon-based side were tactically perfect, with their aggressive approach from the offset helping them into a deserved half time lead. In the second half, Tyler Bassue
pulled one back Hyde Park, bagging his ninth goal of the season, yet NFA were able to hold on and earned an important three points to send them top of the league. MOTM: Kabir Miah – A good goal from a player at the heart of the team who bossed the midfield all game.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Nickash Yousef picked up this week’s ‘Player of the Week’ award with a fine display for Old Bacca Boys. An unstoppable free kick kickstarted his side’s comeback against Jubodhol FC as they moved to within three points of leaders, NFA.
A derby encounter between two Bradford sides was settled thanks to a goal five minutes from the final whistle as Old Bacca Boys earned bragging rights over their near neighbours. Shiraz opened the scoring for Jubodhol with a fine individual goal before end-to-end action entertained onlookers. Both keepers were tested regularly and with the next goal always likely to prove crucial, it was the Old Bacca Boys who managed to hammer one home as Nickash Yousef bagged an unstoppable free kick. The momentum was now in the Boys favour and when Sultan Khan was given space with just five minutes to go, there was never a doubt that the forward would score. MOTM: Nickash Yousef was very calm and composed at the back and his free kick earns him this individual accolade.

THE KING OF THE HEAVYWEIGHTS
WLADIMIR KLITSCHKO By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk There are a number of different boxing weights but one remains the most exciting, followed and recognised throughout the world and that is the heavyweights. I remember as a child my father watching the Greatest of All Time Muhammed Ali’s boxing bouts in the early hours of the morningon his black and white television and to him Ali was boxing full stop. Whenever traditional boxing is debated and talked about by the casual boxing fan it is common to hear the famous “heavyweight fighters” names mentioned like Ali, Mike Tyson, Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis. The heavyweight champion is my opinion in the world of boxing is recognised as the “king of the jungle” because he will be the most universally recognised champion of the world and the most watched boxer. One such heavyweight boxing king is the current undisputed heavyweight champion of the world WladimirKlitschko with 62 wins, 3 losses and an impressive 52 wins coming by way of knockout. Klitschko has remained undefeated as a champion since 2004 and has beaten the likes of recognised boxing contenders Samuel Peter, Calvin Brock, Lemon Brewster, David Haye and most recently Alex Leapai with relative ease and complete boxing master class. However as the 38 year old champion from Ukraine gets older in boxing terms there are many boxing experts suggesting that the new crop of heavyweight contenders will eventually win against the old lion and claim his boxing territory. The British heavyweight boxing division has recently come back to life with Olympic winner Anthony Joshua turning professional and already being recognised as the main candidate for world boxing domination in the near
Khalil Alam
future. Then there are the likes of David Haye, David Price, Tyson Fury, Dominic Breazeale, OleksanderUsyk, Andy Ruiz, Joseph Parker and Deontay Wilder to name but a few who are also strong boxing contenders as the next heavyweight champion. However personally the key to Klitschko success for so many years at the top of the heavyweight division has been his ability to “fight clever” and use his 6ft 6 height, 81 inch reach, “Steel hammer” jab, supreme athletic conditioning and power to his advantage without getting too involved in dog fight. He has always fought with precaution and when he feels his opponents are getting to close to him (into his danger zone) he tends to hold them and in boxing terms “spoils the fight.” Klitschko in my opinion will remain undefeated because he has mastered a boxing style that suits his physical advantages against his opponents and add that to his experience as a world champion and boxing knowledge he has gained after years of fighting at the top level, I personally feel that any of the boxing contenders mentioned above will not even come close to beating him when they do eventually get the chance to fight him. Klitschko next fight is on November 15th 2014 against another undefeated, dangerous heavyweight boxer KubratPulev who is currently undefeated with 20 wins. The 6ft 4 Pulev has the size and talent to give Klitschkoproblems. However Pulev lacks punching power when matched against Klitschko and his only chance in my opinion of winning the fight against Klitschko will be throwinglots of punches and using his jab effectively. However I see that boxing bout ending in another comfortable win forKlitschko who will use his athletic ability to keep moving and his defence tactics to eliminate Pulev punch combinations and then using his own jab will manage to force his opponentPulev into submission. Klitschko may not be the most exciting boxer in the heavyweight division and to the boxing fan may not always deliver the most entertaining knockout fight but what Klitschko does represent is the true art of boxing and that is “hit but not get hit” and that is also the key to his longevity and success as a prize fighter.

England star crowned
‘Player of the Year’ By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
England and Worcestershire all-rounder Moeen Ali capped a memorable summer by being named ‘Player of the Year’ at the 2014 Talk Home Mobile Asian Cricket Awards at Lord’s last week. “It doesn’t get any better than this,” said the 27-year-old from Birmingham, who beat fellow England players Ravi Bopara and Adil Rashid to the award. “I feel very proud and priviliged to be here. It’s a fantastic achievement for the Asian Cricket Awards to be at the home of cricket. I’ve had a great year. It’s been fantastic, I’ve loved and cherished every minute of it. Hopefully I can keep it up for a few more years.” Moeen made his one-day international debut in the West Indies in February and was called up by England for the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh in March and April. He was subsequently selected for the full Test side for the summer tours by Sri Lanka and India, scoring an unbeaten 108 to almost save the second Test against Sri Lanka, as well as career-best figures of 6-67 in the third Test against India.
Elsewhere, former England captain Nasser Hussain OBE picked up a special Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to cricket, while other winners on the night included the Middlesex and England Lions bowler Ravi Patel, who won the Young Player of the Year Award, and Worcestershire player and coach Salma Bi, who picked up the Woman in Cricket Award. Presenters of the 12 awards included high-profile figures such as former England captain Mike Gatting OBE, Baroness Warsi and ex-Pakistan international Azhar Mahmood. “It has been a fantastic day for cricket,” said Gatting, who is now managing director of the England & Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) Cricket Partnerships programme. “To see a community spreading the word of cricket is fantastic. When something like these awards turn up, it doesn’t matter what community, we try and support the game of cricket.” The Talk Home Mobile Asian Cricket Awards aim to improve the awareness of the positive impact made by Asians within the British cricket industry and to engage with organisations and individuals to help increase participation.

SPORT: Zahir Akbar set up the Warrior Breed gym last year and has always has a passion for boxing
A gym in Dewsbury is helping the town’s residents shred pounds and get into shape this autumn with the sport of boxing at the heart of the everyday activities. Warrior Breed Boxing and Fitness was set up by boxing enthusiast Zahir Akbar as a way of bringing youths off the streets and into the gym, whilst also helping to change people’s views on working out. Having been involved with the sport since his teens, the now 41-yearold set up his own gym after spending the last 12 years as a probation officer, working with
young offenders and people coming out of prison. Transferring his skills from one industry to another, Zahir explained how his career had helped set him up for a successful life in fitness coaching.

Bowled over Teen’s perfect cricket season Back page story continued His talent was quickly realised as the youngster played in the under13 set up as a pace bowler before adopting his game in favour of the spin. From there, he joined up with his father’s team, Manningham Mills, before, at the age of 11, he was selected to play for Yorkshire and has been with the team ever since. His latest call up to the North of England squad highlights just another milestone for the cricket enthusiast who described how he felt upon hearing of his selection. “It was a real honour and quite phenomenal,” he said. “I was
very excited when I heard because my parents were the ones who told me. “I originally didn’t get selected after going through about four trials but after the winter they decided to give me another trial and that went really well.” Earlier this year, as England faced off against India at Headingley, Kyme got the chance to practice alongside some of his idols as he was given the opportunity to bowl at the home nation players in the nets. Joe Root, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan and Jos Buttler, were all bowled out by Bradford Grammar School’s
youngest ever First XI captain, who learnt a lot from the day. “It was a really good experience,” he said. “They taught me things I couldn’t learn on my own and now I’m working on things that they have told me to improve my game.” Kyme was most recently nominated for the Amateur Player of the Year Award at this year’s Asian Cricket Awards which took place earlier this month at Lord’s.

At Warrior Breed, the gym has just obtained its official ABA affiliation meaning boxing can be trained professionally out of the premises. Both Zahir’s sons currently train in the sport, with 14-year-old Amaar Akbar, recently winning his first official bout earlier this month. Zahir says this was a very proud moment for him, to see his son excel in a sport the whole family are very passionate about. “It was a proud moment to see him win so confidently,” he said. “Amaar is a very skilful boxer and he recorded a comfortable win, giving his opponent two standing eight counts before winning on points.”

Teen’s perfect cricket season
By Ashley Grint

From starting out as a seven-year-old cricketer, to bowling out some of England’s international stars, Kyme Tehirkheli is quickly making a name for himself in the sporting world – and he’s only 15. The Bradford Grammar School student has a host of accolades to his name and most recently was called up to represent the North of England at his age group. Kyme, from Ilkley, says he first started playing the sport with his brothers on the families drive before joining his first team, Girlington, at seven-years-old.
