A spokesperson for George Galloway says he is ‘disappointed’ at the lack of support shown to the Bradford MP following an attack last week, adding that if it were a Muslim who perpetrated the assault, it would have got ‘far, far more coverage’. Mr Galloway, who is Bradford East MP, was taken to hospital last weekend after suffering severe bruising to his head and ribs following an attack in London. The controversial
politician had been posing for pictures on Golborne Road, Notting Hill, when he was targeted by a man who proceeded to assault the Respect party member. News of the attack was immediately circulated following a picture of an injured Mr Galloway being uploaded to social media. However, Ron McKay, spokesperson for the local MP, says he was disappointed with the ‘lack of support’ shown to Mr Galloway following the incident, adding it would have been a much different reaction should the circumstances have been different.

ELECTRIC: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan gives sensational performance in Leeds By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
The musically captivating voice of the world-renowned king of Qawwali and Sufi music - Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, enchanted almost 6,000 people at the First Direct Arena in Leeds on 30th August with a sensational performance. The show, part of his ‘Back To Love’ tour, gave the audience a whole range of Bollywood songs, old and new heartfelt melodious tunes and some sensational Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan classics.
This was his second visit to Yorkshire. Speaking exclusively to the Asian Express newspaper he said: “Bringing the show two years running to this region and having the electrifying response from the audience is all that an artist like me could ever wish for, I’d like to thank them for their love and respect.” The musical maestro’s infectious energy eventually saw people get off their seats and dance in the aisles. Though he wouldn’t disclose his ‘secret’ pre-performance energy-
boosting tricks, he said that he is deeply inspired by the vast numbers of young people in the UK attending his performances. “I have tried my utmost to carry on my uncle’s (Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) legacy - but with a twist – with my own style,” he said. “I challenge myself to reinvesting and reinventing in the beautiful qualities of Qawaali and Sufi music, with the desire that it strikes a chord with the audiences of today. “Even though the depth and meaning of the lyrics may not be fully understood by some of the
younger generation in the West, I see that they have a strong connection with this genre of music. I’m so excited being part of that. “I thank Allah for putting me in the position where I am respected for my voice and what I do. I pray that I can continue to please my fans.” This year’s Rahat show in Leeds was brought by Pasha Shisha - with whom Asian Express teamed up as a proud media partner. Shabir Hussain, Pasha’s events co-ordinator said: “For us at Pasha, our desire to give people great
entertainment was fulfilled. The feedback and comments that we’ve had have been amazing. “After the event, he came to wind-down at Pasha on Leeds Road and we had the opportunity to show him our hospitality.” Mr Hussain confirmed that all profits of the show will be going to the Penny Appeal charity, which will be helping innocent Palestinians in Gaza. Rahat’s management PME World, confirmed that they would return to bring another show to Leeds in 2016.

Disappointing Lack of condemnation following MP’s street attack in London
Cover story continued Speaking to the Asian Express he said: “I think if it had been the other way around, with a pro-Israel supporter being attacked by a Muslim, then there would have been far, far more publicity. “There would have been more reaction from senior parliamentary figures and even the Prime Minister.” It was reported that Mr Galloway had suffered serious injuries and Mr McKay confirmed that he was now recuperating yet still working. “He is recovering at the moment and suffered severe bruising to the head, body, ribs etc. and he is still very tender,” he added. “He was in the House today and is set to travel to Scotland soon.”
VICTIM: George Galloway was assaulted last weekend in London as he was posing for pictures in Notting Hill
Following the attack, a 39year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm at the scene and remained in custody. The attack is believed to have been related to Mr Galloway’s recent comments in regard to Israel as the assailant ‘shouted’ about the holocaust as he approached the scene. Last month, the politicians declared Bradford an ‘Israelifree zone’ as the conflict between Israel and Gaza continued to press ahead comments which saw the MP investigated by police. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “The victim of the assault was taken to a central London hospital for treatment to his injuries. He was discharged from hospital this morning, Saturday 30th August.”
“He is recovering at the moment and suffered severe bruising to the head, body, ribs etc. and he is still very tender.”

MURDERED: Palmira Silva was beheaded earlier this week in what has been described as a ‘random’ attack
An 82-year-old woman was tragically beheaded in her own back garden in South London earlier this week by a crazed man with a machete. The body of grandmother Palmira Silva was found at the address on Edmonton Street where a 25-year-old man was arrested following the ‘random’ attack which is believed to have no terrorist motive behind it. Armed officers detained the suspect after disarming him with a taser gun and arrested him on suspicion of murder. One officer is believed to have suffered a broken wrist during the arrest. Ms Silva, who was widowed and ran a small cafe in nearby Church Street, had lived in the
property for the past 25 years. Her attacker is reported to have attempted to attack a separate couple prior to Ms Silva’s death yet they escaped with no injuries. Det Chief Insp John Sandlin, leading the investigation, said the police were not looking for anyone else in connection with the attack, whilst the suspect was being treated for injuries suffered during his arrest. He said: “We are confident that we are not looking for anyone else at this stage. “Whilst it is too early to speculate on what the motive behind this attack was I am confident, based on the information currently available to me, that it is
not terrorist related.” London Mayor Boris Johnson also expressed his ‘shock’ at the attack and offered his condolences to those who knew Ms Silva. “Yesterday's events in Edmonton were truly shocking and my thoughts are with Palmira Silva's family during this incredibly difficult time,” he said. “London is a safe city and incidents like this are very rare. I'd like to commend the bravery shown by the officers involved in keeping other members of the public safe during a very volatile situation.” A post-mortem examination is set to take place on Saturday 6th September at Haringey Mortuary.

Landmark dementia study at Bradford Royal Infirmary seeks local people to help with research
The leaders of a £2million landmark study, which aims to improve the care of dementia patients while they recuperate in hospital from a fractured hip, are looking for Bradford people to help them with their research. Bradford Teaching Hospitals is one of only three sites across the UK currently enlisted in the PERFECTED (Perioperative Enhanced Recovery hip FracturE Care of paTiEnts with Dementia) study which will examine the way hospitals care for and rehabilitate patients after they undergo surgery for a fractured hip. This five-year programme will investigate how better standards of care can be implemented across the NHS to improve the outcomes of hospital admission for people with dementia. Currently, one quarter of acute NHS hospital beds are occupied by people with dementia and rehabilitation is difficult due to acute confusion “delirium” and other complications. Many return home in worse health than when they were admitted. Now the research programme is looking for local people, who have been touched by dementia, to act as lay researchers and advisory members on its study. Isla Dowds, Patient and Public Involvement Facilitator at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: ‘The main reason for involving local people in this way is so that their expertise - gained through their personal experience - can shape the research programme. “They can make sure that it reflects how a person affected by dementia might think or feel about it. “This type of insight is vital in helping researchers understand people’s needs related to having dementia, and to make sure these are taken into account in designing and carrying out the research. That is a powerful contribution to make to the vital work of improving care for people with dementia.” Lay researchers will help the programme to assist in the collection and analysis of interviews. Some training will be given and expenses will be paid. The programme is being led by the University of East Anglia’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences following a grant from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). Carers or people living with dementia are also being sought for the advisory group, which will meet two to four times a year. Researchers are hoping that people will commit to helping their study for at least two years. Dr Simon Hammond, Programme Manager and Research Fellow for the PERFECTED study, added: “This is an exciting opportunity for people to bring their knowledge of what it is like living with dementia and marry that with the expertise of the researchers working on the programme. “We need people who will be willing to contribute to discussions and making decisions, and help us produce research that can be understood and put to practical use.” The programme involves a UK and international team of researchers with the Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia UK as partners. A key international collaborator is Prof Malaz Boustani – a US expert in implementation science and aging brain care at Indiana University’s School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute, who is also president of the American Delirium Society. The study is hosted by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where initial research will take place. Up to 10 hospitals will take part in the research. After the programme has ended, it is hoped that the guidelines will be rolled out under a four-year trial across the NHS.

Record number of anti-Semitic crimes
51%* of reported crimes committed by South Asians organisation would continue to work with authorities to combat the problem. He said: “It helps to explain the pressures felt by so many British Jews this summer, with its combination of anti-Jewish hatred and anti-Israel hatred.

Statistics handed to the Asian Express this past week have revealed that anti-Semitic crimes in the UK reached a record level in July 2014, with a large proportion of the crimes committed by people from the South Asian community. Figures released by the Community Security Trust (CST) show a shocking 400 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, as which there were 302 separate incidents. This figure is also just two fewer than the first six months of 2014 in which 304 incidents were reported. CST officials have drawn a direct correlation between attacks on Britain’s Jewish population and the events in Hamas and Israel - of the 302 crimes, 155 had direct reference to the ongoing conflict which began in July. CST obtained a description of the offender for 107 of the total incidents recorded. Of these, 55 offenders, 51 per cent, were described as being of south Asian
appearance; 32 offenders, 31 per cent, were described as white; 15, 14 per cent, were described as being of Arab or north African appearance; and five, five per cent, were described as black. Representing just over seven per
cent of the country’s full population, the statistics show a worrying over-representation for south Asians. CST spokesman Mark Gardner said the statistics ‘speak for themselves’ and that his

Opposing antiSemitism takes actions not words. “It is particularly damaging for public figures, be they politicians, journalists or faith leaders, to feed these hatreds by comparing Israel to Nazi Germany or by encouraging extreme forms of public protest and intimidation.” The worst offending area was Greater London with 179 antiSemitic incidents, whilst more locally, Bradford only had two reports. *51% - incidents where a description of the offender was available.

‘An amazing experience’ TEAM: Hanaike (centre) worked alongside ten volunteers in the ISC project in Tanzania focusing on sustainable development
Teenager urges others to get involved with charity project By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
When Hanaike Rehal left Oakwood Sixth Form at the end of the 2013 academic year, the options for his future remained wide open. University, a career, or maybe an apprenticeship could have been on the cards for the now 19year-old yet instead there was only one thing that piqued his interest; a volunteer opportunity. Hanaike, from Oakwood, Leeds, had always had the ambition to volunteer abroad and took up the opportunity earlier this year with a ‘life-changing’ trip to Tanzania. For ten weeks, the teen volunteered for the Raleigh charity as part of the International Citizen Service (ISC) programme, developed for young people aged between 18 and 25. Working in the rural village of Myarmyar in the east African country, the teenager’s main focus was to help improve sustainable development in the area. Having never been away from home for such a long period, Hanaike says it was a big decision to undertake the project but he was extremely happy to have done it. “After sixth form, I decided to take a gap year and had always wanted to do some volunteering,” he said. “It was actually one of my cousins who told me about this project and I applied and was fortunate enough to get a place. “A lot of our work revolved around educating local people about sanitation and showing
them clean, safe ways of handling water. “By the time we had left, we had even completed five educational murals which showed the lessons we had taught during our time there.” Hanaike now wants to promote the project closer to home in the hope of getting more volunteers on board with the charity. For the full ten weeks, each person who joins the project is only required to raise £800 prior to the trip, with the rest of the costs covered by the ICS which is majority funded by the Department for International Development (DFID). As well as helping developing countries, new skills and independence is acquired something Hanaike says is one of the hidden benefits. “It is a great experience and one which I would love to do again,” he said. “Spending time in countries like
WORK: The team were tasked with constructing water distribution points amongst other tasks over a ten week period
this really help you to appreciate the things that you do have here at home and since I have come back, I have tried not to fall back into the same old habits. “To people who want to volunteer, I would just say don’t hesitate and don’t be worried. It is an amazing project to be a part of and I couldn’t recommend it enough.” Brian Rockliffe, Director of ICS, reiterated the local volunteer’s message and explained what the project aims to achieve. He added: “We’re passionate about investing in young people, our future leaders, and using their energy to tackle poverty. “Our experience of working with young people shows they want to challenge the status quo, take on some of the big issues and make a difference. “ICS creates active citizens who make a lifelong contribution to positive change in the UK and developing countries.”

‘Invest in Bradford’ CONSTRUCTION: Work on the new Westfield Broadway development only began in January 2014 and the massive steel frame has already been completed
Development site welcomes new investors from the capital By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
It has been a big week for Bradford’s £275m Westfield Broadway shopping development with action both on and off the site. Visually, passer-bys will have seen cladding start to appear on the exterior of the site as the giant metal structure was completed last month, with 6,800 tonnes of steel used to construct the shape. On completion, the site will total 570,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, with 1,300 new car parking spaces. In addition to Debenhams, M&S and Next, more than 70 shops, restaurants and cafes will bring together a dynamic mix of high street fashion, food and lifestyle brands. A Westfield spokesperson said it is exciting times to be involved with the project and the public could expect to see more progress in the near future. The spokesperson said: “We’ve been really pleased about the progress that has been made on The Broadway since construction began in January 2014. “In the coming weeks people will see more cladding being attached to
the frame, as we move towards making The Broadway watertight, allowing more internal work to commence. “As well as making good headway on the construction of the centre, this year a number of exciting retailers have signed-up to the scheme, including New Look, JD Sports, Topshop, Topman and Boots.

Muslim community ‘targeted’ following grooming allegations As calls for justice continue to gain momentum in relation to the Rotherham sexual abuse case, a leader of a local Muslim youth group is also backing the calls yet insists the actions should not be seen as a ‘Muslim problem’. British Muslim Youth founder Muhbeen Hussain, has said the local Muslim community is united in calls for action to be taken against those involved in the scandal. More than 1,400 children are reported to have been sexually abused between 1997 and 2013 in the South Yorkshire town with many of the perpetrators of Pakistani origin. In the 2011 census, only 1.1 per cent of the population in Rotherham were from Pakistan making the statistics even more worrying for the representation. However, Mr Hussain insists the problem is a ‘criminal’ one and not a ‘Muslim’ one as he spoke emotionally at a press conference earlier this week. “We are not here to deny anything the report clearly shows a large number of those individuals were Pakistani Muslim men,” he said. “But we don't support the sentiment that it is a Pakistani or a Muslim problem.
“It is clear what these individuals did but they are not part of our community - the only community they are a part of is the criminal community. “There is nowhere in Pakistani Muslim culture that condones such actions, there is nowhere in the Islamic faith that supports these actions. “We want convictions; we want justice for the 1,400.” Since the report was released by Professor Alexis Jay, the spotlight has been shone on those in charge of protecting the youths in Rotherham throughout the 16-year period. Council leader, Roger Stone, resigned from his position upon the news whilst calls for chief crime commissioner, Shaun Wright, to resign were made by many including the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg. Stone has since been suspended by the Labour Party alongside fellow councillors, Gwendoline Russell, Shaukat Ali, and ex-deputy leader Jahangir Akhtar, pending an investigation. In 2010, attention was first drawn to Rotherham when five men were sentenced for grooming teenage girls in the area.
MONSTERS: Zafran Ramzan, Umar Razaq, Adil Hussain, Mohsin Khan and Razwan Razaq, all from Rotherham, were all handed prison sentences after being found guilty of grooming in 2010

Meet the brothers bringing Sufi music to Bradford
A family in Bradford is certainly making quite the noise on the music scene as three brothers show they have what it takes to perform at the highest level. 18-year-old Salamet Husayn Iqbal, along with his younger siblings, Hassan, 17, and Sulayman, 15, have been playing instruments for more than ten years gaining a reputation as the street’s noisy neighbours with an array of talents on show. The brothers, all from West Bowling, can play the flute, violin, clarinet, piano, harmonium, and percussion instruments to extremely high standards, often mastering the talent through their own intuition. Most recently, the trio had the opportunity to play on stage with the world renowned, Mahmood Sabri, of the Sabri Brothers, when they attended the annual Sufi Soul Festival, in Kall, Germany. Mahmood Sabri is the last remaining brother of the famous group who helped ‘put Pakistani music on the map’ with his Sufi qawwali genre in the 70’s and 80’s. At the event, the boys were shocked to be asked to play alongside the legendary performer, and for their father, Javed Iqbal, it was a great moment. “I am extremely proud of them when I see them play,” he said. “It is like I am living my dream through them. “20 years ago I couldn’t have even imagined being in the same room as any of the Sabri Brothers let alone see my sons play on the same stage as him. “It was really special. We were told before the performance that the boys might get around five or ten minutes at the end. “Then at the beginning of his act, Mahmood Sabri turned around to ‘Ustaad Sulamat’ and told him to play. “It was totally unrehearsed but really well received from all the audience and acts.”
FESTIVAL: The family met Mahmood Sabri, of the Sabri Brothers, during their visit to the Sufi Soul Festival in Germany earlier this month
Following the performance, Mahmood Sabri telephoned the family directly to compliment the talents of the three teenagers, especially Salamet, who had played a musical piece dating back more than 50 years. Labelling the teen an Ustaad, meaning teacher, he spoke of his gratitude of being able to hear a song from his earlier days which had helped him fall back in love with music. For the former Dixon’s City Academy pupil, it was a humbling experience. “It was a great privilege,” he said. “I have been playing the clarinet for 13 or 14 years now and to finally play with a master such as Mahmood Sabri was a really big thing. “To get such a compliment from such a master is not common, and for him to be so impressed with what I did was very enriching.” With Salamet just completing his A-Levels he now hopes to
pursue his musical career further yet needs extra support to fulfil his ambitions. Mr Iqbal said: “We feel we have taking Salamet as far as we are able to and now we are in need of help and support from those more experienced and with the means to take him further.” If you would be able to help sponsor Salamet with his future aspirations, please contact him directly on 07955 644 435 or email sameenaash@hotmail.com.
MUSICIAN: Salamet Husayn plays the clarinet as his main instrument and is currently seeking support to help him progress even further in the industry

No Guts, No Heart, No Glory BOXING: (l-r) Nayab Din, Mariam Rashid, Seherish Mahmood, Freyaa Ali, and Saira Tabasum prepare for their return to Bradford this week for the ‘No Guts, No Heart, No Glory’ production. (image courtesy of Christopher Nunn)
Critically acclaimed production returns to Bradford Four years ago, the UK’s first Muslim female boxer entered a boxing ring for her competitive debut, embarking on a journey never before seen in her culture. Now, at the age of 19, Ambreen Sadiq’s powerful story is portrayed, alongside those of fellow young Muslim women who have taken up a passion for the sport, in the critically acclaimed production – ‘No Guts, No Heart, No Glory’. Examining the assumptions and expectations held of young Muslim women in both the Muslim and non-Muslim communities, the story is one which highlight’s life’s possibilities no matter the circumstances. Winner of the Scotsman Fringe First Award, and short-listed for Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award, the play
makes its long awaited return to Bradford next week. Critics have applauded the production for its energetic display of sheer determination, showing the human will to succeed in a field no matter what situation you find yourself in. Ambreen, who became a national champion at just 16 years of age, has taken up a coaching role, whilst fellow Bradford-born boxer and former British University champion, Saira Tabasum, stars as herself. Ambreen explained what people can expect from the inspiring production which relates closely to her own personal experiences. She said: “I feel that it’s based on my story. An Asian girl or woman boxing is a huge thing in our culture especially when you are Pakistani and a Muslim, it’s
seen as not very ladylike. “I want to get the point across that boxing is not just for boys. I want to inspire girls from all backgrounds to do what they dream of doing whether that’s boxing or not.” Director and Producer, Evie Manning, added: “We started interviewing Muslim female boxers and were struck by their determination and passion for the sport, at how they had said ‘I will be who I want to be and do what I want to do’ and we thought this was a powerful message that spoke to all young women and young men,” she said. “We see No Guts, No Heart, No Glory as...an opportunity for us to make something positive and create an atmosphere of a club, with loud music and strong female characters.” No Guts, No Heart, No Glory returns to Bradford this week with a first performance set to take place on Thursday 11th September at Huggy’s Gym, Manchester Road.

GOODBYE: (above) Haroon Aswat will be extradited to the US after he is alleged to have planned setting up a jihadi training camp in Oregon alongside Abu Hamza CHARGES: Haroon Aswat was described as a lieutenant to the radical cleric, Abu Hamza (left), who was indicted in the US in 2004
A suspected terrorist from West Yorkshire, described as convicted radical cleric, Abu Hamza al Masri’s most favoured ‘lieutenant’, is set to be extradited. Haroon Aswat, from Batley, had seen his extradition from the UK put on hold earlier this year after judges wanted assurances about the way he would be treated by the US government. Yet now, following a high court hearing in London on Thursday 4th September, home secretary Theresa May has been given the go-ahead to extradite the mentally ill, Broadmoor patient. Aswat has been wanted by US officials in connection with plans to set up a jihadi training camp alongside Abu Hamza in Bly, Oregon. Speaking after the hearing, a Home office spokesman said: “We are pleased the court has upheld the Home Secretary's decision to extradite Haroon Aswat to the United States. “The court agreed that the American authorities had provided sufficient assurances over the conditions in which Aswat would be held in the U.S. “Aswat's legal team has been given an opportunity to seek leave to appeal to the
Supreme Court. Subject to any application, arrangements will now be made for his extradition.” Aswat, who is believed to be in his late 30’s, was initially detained in 2005 in Zambia and deported back to the UK after a request from the US for his extradition. In 2008, he was transferred to Broadmoor’s high security psychiatric hospital where he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and has been receiving treatment ever since. Aswat's lawyers have persistently argued that should he be forced to leave for the US, the accused might be held in a ‘supermax’ American jail which would hamper his health, something the European Court demanded to be addressed. They said they wanted assurances that he would be held in a psychiatric referral centre pending examination by doctors. Welcoming Thursday's decision, Britain's interior ministry said the court clearly agreed that American authorities had provided sufficient assurances over the conditions in which Aswat would be held. Arrangements for his extradition are now being made by US authorities.

In the early years of my teaching career, I remember attending a conference in Bradford on MultiCulturalism. I remember it well, it was at the Midland Hotel with many eminent speakers, unfortunately I don’t remember the name of one particular speaker who, although I did not realise at the time, had left a lasting impact on my thinking. What I do remember is that he spoke with great eloquence, passion and engagement. It was during the early ninties, a period in which Mikhail Gorbachov had introduced Glasnost, the opening up and Peristroika, the restructuring of, the Soviet Union. The largely political and economic rivalry Asian

The ‘Good Guy’ created the ‘Bad Guy’? between the Soviet Union and the United States, and what was known as the Cold War, was coming to an end and it seemed that the world was coming towards a peaceful time. This is where the words of the aforementioned speakers had such prophetic meaning. He spoke about how the effect of Glasnost would have in shaping todays’ world. To paraphrase what he basically said, was, that since the Iron Curtain had fallen and the USA and USSR are no longer hostile to each other, there is a void in the equation. How will the US and the West maintain its supremacy over the world when it doesn’t have an enemy to fight , to show the world that they
are still the Good Guys and saviours of all the bad in the world? He spoke how the West needed an enemy to fight so that they could act as the police state, combating anything that threatened the equilibrium of the peace in the world; this he said would come about by the creation of a new enemy and that new enemy would be Islam. Islamic Militants and Islamic Fundamentalism have always existed but no-one ever really knew or cared about what was going on. Gradually from the late ninties up until now, Islamic terrorism and Fundamentalism are always a breath away from the news, always portrayed as the enemy of all
enemies. The question that needs to be asked is, why was the religion of Islam never a problem before, especially during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980’s. At that time the US supported the Mujahiddins who were fighting against the Russians, and once the Russians had been defeated, those same Muhjahiddins became militants and terrorists. The question that needs to be asked is “Is the real issue, how we define those people who choose to stand up for their rights?” The sceptic in me wonders whether this Islamophobia and the related terrorism issues have been manufactured and engineered by the West to create a “Bad Guy” so that
they can keep their “Good Guy” image and the power that is inevitably attached to such status. The aftermath of 9/11 and the subsequent US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown that the Americans will do whatever they want and then justify it the way they want to as well. The emerging and continuing conflict in the Ukraine and the alleged blatant aggression of the Russians could signal the start of a shift of attention away from Islam and the Middle East, to the reempowered Russia with Putin at its helm. Will the emergence of this new enemy have an impact on the existing enemy of the religion of Islam, the Pandoras’ Box the West probably wishes they had never opened. The name of that speaker still eludes me today!

Police officers from the Specialist Operations Department are swapping their high performance vehicles for a set of borrowed bike wheels as part of the latest plans to tackle burglary. From this past week, officers in plain clothes will be patrolling suburban areas in Leeds, Bradford and other parts of West Yorkshire, as part of the latest covert tactic to further reduce domestic burglary. Under the plans, teams of officers will use bikes that have previously been recovered by police as suspected stolen property, and have until this point remained unused in police stores, as officers have been unable to trace their rightful owners. The activity forms part of West Yorkshire Police's Viper initiative, which aims to target the county's most prolific burglars by using crime profiling, intelligence systems and innovative tactics, to ensure officers are in the right places at the right times.

Volunteers for a project to help communities enforce anti-dog fouling measures are being sought in Garforth. The ‘dog watch’ volunteers will be given training and tools to help them report fouling, so that the council can then enforce anti-fouling measures more effectively. Initially being done in the Garforth area, the council hope the pilot can give teeth to enforcement of measures throughout the rest of the city. Volunteers will receive training on the law and how to record information to help with enforcement, as well as support from Leeds City Council to arrange action days and patrols.
Ashya King: Cancer victim reunited with parents after their release from jail The parents of young brain tumour patient Ashya King were reunited with the five-year-old earlier this week after their ordeal at the hands of British authorities and Spanish police finally came to an end. Brett King said he and wife Naghmah had been ‘treated like terrorists’ in the days since they took their son from hospital in Southampton following a dispute over his care. The couple were yesterday transported the 330 miles from where they had been held in prison near Madrid to Malaga, where Ashya had spent four days under armed guard in a children’s hospital. After visiting his stricken son and leaving his wife to keep vigil overnight, Mr King spoke of the couple’s first moments back in
Ashya’s company. Brett and Naghmeh King were released from a Madrid prison late on 2nd September, after British authorities dropped an extradition request.

However, it appears their prayers have been answered after charity Kids’n’CancerUK said they had been flooded with donations, £35,000 being pledged in just 24 hours. Chief executive Mike Hyman said: “We have had people donate their pensions – you cannot buy that sort of generosity.”

BURQ OFF! One-woman’s comic look inside the British-Pakistani community By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
As the debate about immigration and integration rages on in the UK, one young British-Pakistani Muslim woman will provide a unique insight into the challenges faced by the immigrants themselves in an alien land. ‘Burq-Off!’ is a hilarious new onewoman show by writer and stand-up comic Nadia Manzoor, who has dared to explore the classic migrant's' conflict between the need to better integrate and the religious and cultural demands of their own communities. After a series of sold-out performances in the United States, the show arrives in Nadia's hometown of London from 9th September, running until 14th September. Written, produced and performed by 31year-old Nadia, 'Burq-Off!' is an auto-biographical 'variety' show in which Nadia draws on her own life experiences to play 21 different characters - from her domineering Pakistan-born father and
radicalised twin brother, through her saucy school friend and overbearing aunts, to the Islamic studies teacher with a sideline in pornography. The show explores the myriad conflicts of identity, sexuality and culture Nadia had to contend with growing up in a conservative Pakistani family in 90's England, and provides a rare woman's perspective into the eternal quest to belong to two wildly opposing cultures. 'Burq-Off!' was one of the biggest selling Off Broadway shows of 2013 and, following a sell-out run in San Francisco, is coming to Nadia's hometown for a special week-long run at the Cockpit Theatre in Central London. US news and opinion portal the Daily Beast said of Nadia and ‘Burq Off!’: “Few artists address the clash of tribalism and modernity with more wit and insight than Nadia P. Manzoor and her show. “She not only wrote this comedy gem, she inhabits twenty-plus characters to tell her story, a story that many in her community are too afraid merely to talk about.” Born in the US to Pakistani parents but raised in leafy Hertfordshire from the age of three, Nadia's return to London is a not-insignificant step for the young comic. ‘Burq-Off!’ raises difficult questions and provides an uncompromising look at a variety of issues that continue to blight the close-knit and insular British Pakistani community: from the tribalism that is often carried over by first generation immigrants to issues such as sex, girl's education and marriage between blood relatives as well as the radicalization of young second and third generation migrants. COMIC: Nadia Manzoor’s critically acclaimed production received heaps of praise during its showing in the US and comes to London for one week this month

Milestone success for ‘InTouch InLeeds’

1,000 Meals! By Ashley Grint

A mobile kitchen in Leeds is celebrating its latest milestone achievement after serving up its 1,000th meal last month. The InTouch Foundation’s Leeds site passed the landmark despite only launching earlier this year in May. Providing warm meals to those most vulnerable in society, from the homeless to individuals suffering financial difficulties in their lives, the project has proved a huge success, following on from sites in Bradford and Keighley. On average, 100 meals are handed out every Tuesday on the Headrow by a team of volunteers, with around 60 people being served food and drink. This number is expected to double over the next three months as word of mouth spreads and for Leeds co-ordinator, Shabbir Merali, it shows, how important these kinds of projects are for the city. “It’s imperative to have this here,” he said. “It’s not just homeless people coming down but those who are experiencing difficulties, with some not even eating for days. “We are not surprised to have hit the milestone so soon due to the success already seen in Bradford and Keighley and we only expect the figures to increase.” He added: “A big thank you goes out to our team of incredible volunteers and also Leeds Council who have been very supportive of the project since day one.”

SLAMMED Saudi journalist accuses mainstream newspaper of theft of his story and mistranslation about relocating Prophet’s grave
By Anush Ansari
anush@asianexpress.co.uk
The Saudi government has ploughed billions of pounds into the redevelopment of Mecca, with the aim bettering facilities to accomodate the annual influx of at least 15 million pilgrims, increasing by seven per cent a year. A British newspaper this week was being applauded for ‘breaking’ a story, which was headlined “Saudis risk new Muslim division with proposal to move Mohamed’s tomb”. The article published by ‘The Independent’, talked about fears of segregation across the Muslim world if Prophet Muhammed’s (pbuh) tomb, which is housed under the Green Dome at the alMasjid al-Nabawi mosque, was to be destroyed. It suggested that the Prophet’s body would then be relocated to an anonymous grave in the nearby al-Baqi cemetery. The Independent is claiming the story as an exclusive, and many have credited the paper as breaking the story. Now, Mowafaq al-Nowaysar - the Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Saudi Arabian ‘Makkah’ newspaper has slammed the newspaper accusing ‘The Independent’ of ‘theft’, claiming they have ‘robbed’ one of their journalists of his story. Furthermore, al-Nowaysar says that ‘The Independent’ ‘fell in the trap of misunderstandings’ after it ‘mistranslated’ the Arabic article that was posted on 25th

Looking for the perfect honeymoon? or just a 'sweetheart getaway'
August. Speaking to Al Arabiya News, Omar al-Mudhwahi, the Saudi journalist who wrote the ‘Makkah’ article said: “If they insist on stealing my work, at least they should allow me to provide them with an accurate translation… I would be glad to.” It transpires that the ‘61page document’ submitted to the Saudi government by an Islamic academic was in fact a post-doctoral paper compiled by Dr. Ali bin Abdulaziz al-Shabal submitted to the committee of the Presidency of the Two Holy Mosques. It had been completed for a Saudi Arabian university in order for him to reach the level of adjunct professor. Although ‘The Independent’ newspaper mentions that there has been no sign that any decision has been taken to act upon the so-called ‘plans’ to relocate the Prophet’s grave, it’s clear that the article focuses of sectarian divide fears if such an event was to take place. Asian Express contacted ‘The Independent’ Deputy Managing Editor Will Gore who maintains that the article wasn’t ‘stolen’, as alNowaysar has alleged. Mr Gore said: “We made it quite clear there is no suggestion that any decision has been taken to act on the proposals. “Nonetheless, the paper puts forward some controversial ideas that have
inevitably raised concern, especially in the context of previous development in Mecca and Medina. We felt it was important to report on this.” Al Arabiya has obtained a comment from The General Presidency of the Two Holy mosques, which has denied
reports of plans to destroy the tomb of the Prophet Mohammed in Madinah. Saudi government sources have confirmed that the issue is nothing more than a ‘proposal by an academic which was published in a specialised magazine and is not a government decision’.

‘Strap me, not wrap me’
New parents could be putting their babies at risk without realising, according to a new campaign to highlight car baby seat safety. ‘Strap me not wrap me’ campaign is a joint initiative between Locala, which provides NHS community health services, Kirklees Council’s Highways Department and West Yorkshire Police. Community nurses at local immunisation clinics are noticing an increasing number of infants attending - an average of 10 a month - who are not correctly fastened into car seats and so are at risk of serious head or neck injuries. Anyone driving a car with a baby not strapped into their baby seat faces a penalty fine of £100 - £500. In addition, a driver with fewer seat belts than passengers (including babies) will receive three points on their licence and be stopped from onward travel.

PRICEY: A diamond ring, worth around £50,000, was taken by the two thieves
WANTED: The man and woman, pictured, are wanted by police following the crime in Leeds’ Victoria Quarter
A £50,000 ring was stolen from a Leeds jeweller last week and police are appealing for any information which could lead to the return of the valuable object. CCTV images have been released of two people who are wanted for questioning after the ring was taken from a shop in the Victoria Quarter on Monday 25th August. The man and woman went into the store and asked staff to show them various items from around the shop. While staff were distracted they then proceeded to steal a diamond ring worth more than £50,000 from a display board and left the store. The man was described as Asian, aged in his late thirties to forties, medium build, with short dark hair, whilst the woman was of similar age, about 5ft 2ins tall, and wearing a black headscarf. A notable feature police are stressing is that both of the pair had gold teeth at the
front of their mouths, which they hope will bring the two suspected thieves to justice. PCSO James Hudson, of the City Neighbourhood Policing Team, said it was clear the couple had offended before and was now determined to catch them before similar action happens again. He said: “It is believed these two are professional criminals who travel around committing offences of this type as they are confident and appear well practiced at this type of offence. “As well as appealing for information to identify them we hope this publicity will serve as a warning to other jewellers to be aware of these offenders. We'd also like to hear from anyone who may have been offered such a ring for sale.” Anyone with any information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact PCSO 135 Hudson at Leeds Central Police Station via 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Young people from Huddersfield got their brooms and litter pickers at the ready earlier this month as they took part in a community cleanup project. Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) teamed up with local MP Jason McCartney, and other volunteers to help tidy up the streets of Marsden. In total, ten AMYA members from Huddersfield and Spen Valley took part in the one hour, lunchtime litter pick as part of volunteer week. As well as the local MP, the group were also joined by residents from the local community and councillors. AMYA members discussed their volunteering and fundraising activities

Nadeem Ahmad, local youth leader for Huddersfield, said it was important to show cohesion between different faiths and communities and this project was a great way of bringing people together. He said: “As Muslims we are told that cleanliness is an integral part of our faith. Giving up just one hour to
help our local community members can make a huge difference.” Following the successful litter collection everyone present took time to pause, reflect and remember the local war dead at the Marsden War Memorial which is situated within Marsden Park. During the First World War more than one hundred young men from Marsden were killed.

Shopping centre goes bananas Leeds’ Merrion centre is getting in the Fairtrade spirit this weekend with some special fruity friends on hand to help celebrate an important milestone. Shoppers heading down to the site on Saturday will be greeted by the city’s Fairtrade supporters who will be handing out free bananas to mark 10 years of Leeds being a Fairtrade City. Children are invited to join in with the fun activities on the day which will include young visitors having the chance to make their own banana themed hats. Chair of Fairtrade Leeds Group, Hannah Steering Langdana, said she was delighted to see the city celebrate a decade of support and looked forward to even more in the future. “We are celebrating 10 years as a Fairtrade city and wanted to involve Leeds’ citizens to join in the fun,” she said. Fairtrade means better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers, and their workers communities. When you buy a product with the Fairtrade MARK it means that workers’ rights and the environment have been protected, and that farmers have been
paid a Fairtrade Minimum Price and also an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in their business or community projects. Leeds was honoured to have Aimeth Fernandez (pictured) a banana farmer from Colombia visit the city in February. She said that her family were only able to afford running water and electricity in their home after they started to sell to Fairtrade. She ended her visit by asking the people of Leeds to ‘carry on buying Fairtrade bananas from Colombia so we can make a difference to our lives’. She added: “This child friendly afternoon at the Merrion Centre aims to do just that.”

Violence and threats prompt more Muslim women in Britain to wear a veil When youth worker Sumreen Farooq was abused in a London street, the 18year-old decided it was time to take a stand - and she started to wear a headscarf. Farooq is one of many young Muslim women living in Britain who have, for various reasons, chosen to adopt the headscarf to declare their faith to all around them, despite figures showing rising violence against visibly identifiable Muslims. For despite a common view that young Muslim women are forced to wear veils by men or their families, studies and interviews point to the opposite in Muslim minority countries where it is often the case that the women themselves choose to cover up. "I'm going to stand out whatever I do, so I might as well wear the headscarf," said Farooq, a shop assistant who also volunteers at an Islamic youth centre in Leyton, east London. While just under five percent of Britain's 63 million population are Muslim, there are no official numbers on how many women wear a headscarf or head veil, known as the hijab, or the full-face veil, the
niqab, which covers all the face except the eyes. The niqab is usually worn with a head-to-toe robe or abaya. But anecdotally it seems in recent years that more young women are choosing to wear a headscarf to assert a Muslim identity they feel is under attack and to publicly display their beliefs. Shanza Ali, 25, a Masters graduate who works for a Muslim-led non-profit organisation in London, said she was born in Pakistan and her Pakistani mother had never worn the veil but both she and her sister Sundas chose to do so aged about 20. "I decided to make a commitment as a Muslim and I have never stopped since," Shanza told Reuters in her family home in Walthamstow, east London where prayer mats hang from the walls alongside modern, family portraits. "Sometimes you forget that you're covering your hair but you never forget why you're covering. You remember, that to you, your character should be more important than your appearance. "It makes it easier for Muslim women to keep away from things that you don't want to do that would
impact your value system. If you don't want to go clubbing, drink, or have relations outside marriage, it can help, but it can also just be a reminder to be a good person and treat others well." Shaista Gohir, chairman of the Muslim Women's Network UK, said more women had adopted headscarves since the attacks in the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, and in London on July 7, 2005, put them under greater political and public scrutiny. "For some young women it is a way of showing they are different and they are Muslim although it is not a Muslim obligation," she told Reuters. She said the full-face niqab was a minor phenomenon in Britain, worn by relatively few women, although it had become central to a wider debate in the country about integration and British values. This was put to the test last year when a judge ruled a Muslim woman could not give evidence at a trial wearing a niqab, sparking debate about whether Britain should follow other European countries and ban full-face veils in public

CHOICE: Modesty in Islam is key for both men and women but most Islamic scholars agree that women adopting a full-face veil is more to do with culture than religion

September 2014 - 1st Edition places. After a national debate, a compromise was reached and it was agreed that the woman could wear the niqab during the trial but not when she was giving evidence. Modesty in Islam is key for both men and women but most Islamic scholars agree that women adopting a full-face veil is more to do with culture than religion. But women who publicly display their religion by wearing a scarf of any kind have found they can be targeted for doing so. Figures released recently from the campaign group Tell MAMA (Measuring Anti-Muslim Attacks) showed the number of attacks against Muslims in Britain was one the rise. During its first year of monitoring, Tell MAMA recorded 584 antiMuslim incidents between April 1 2012 and April 30 2013, with about 74 percent of these taking place online. Of the physical incidents, six in 10, or 58 percent, were against Muslim women and 80 percent of women targeted were visually identifiable by wearing a hijab or niqab. The number rose to 734 incidents over the 10 months from Mary 2013 to February 2014 with 54 percent of these against women and a total of 599 online. There was a spike in reports in the weeks following the murder of off-duty soldier Lee Rigby in south London in May last year by two British Muslim converts. "Attacks against visibly dressed Muslim females may not accurately explain away the trend of hate crimes being opportunistic and situational. The data suggests that the alleged perpetrators of anti-

Muslim hate crimes at a street-based level, are young white males targeting Muslim women, and that is a cause for concern," Tell MAMA said in a statement. Matthew Feldman, co-founder of the Centre for Fascist, Anti-Fascist and Post-Fascist Studies at Teesside University who analyses Tell MAMA data, said the rise in the numbers of attacks could be partly due to more awareness of the reporting process. He said it was surprising but reassuring that the rise in violence against Muslim women had been accompanied by a rise in the number of women adopting the veil. This was also the conclusion of a
study last year by the University of Birmingham that found over 15 years Muslim women had repeatedly been shown to be disproportionately targeted in relation to anti-Muslim hatred as they were identifiable. Yasmin Navsa, 17, a student from Hackney in east London, said wearing a hijab made her stand out and made her different. "In Islam it doesn't say anywhere you have to wear a veil but it's a choice. It's more fashionable now with different colours and styles which makes it more attractive to wear," Navsa told Reuters in a break from exams. "I've found it's so common to wear a headscarf now in London that
you don't get looked at twice any more but I think wearing a full-face veil would attract some negative comments." This approach to adopting the hijab with a view to being identifiably Muslim was typical in Muslim minority nations but not in countries where Muslims are in the majority. An international study in 2012, conducted in Austria, India, Indonesia and Britain, looked at Muslim women's views on wearing a headscarf in Indonesia which is a Muslim majority society, compared to India that is a Muslim minority. It found that in a majority, women talked about convenience, fashion,
35
and modesty as reasons for veiling. But in minority communities, women's responses were more diverse, ranging from religious arguments to convenience and to opposition against stereotypes and discrimination. "For women in minorities the veil was a way to affirm their cultural identity and a political and resistant way to address negativity about Muslim communities," said researcher Caroline Howarth, from the London School of Economics. "This does contradict the view dominant in non-Muslim countries in the West that the female scarf is a symbol of religious fundamentalism and patriarchal oppression." Sundas Ali, 29, said her husband, whom she married last year after an introduction between their families, made it clear to her from the outset that wearing the hijab was her decision. She said some young Muslim women even received kickback from some men for wearing a headscarf as they were seen as "boring, unfashionable, and no fun". "There is a misconception that it is the men telling the women what they should wear but for me and all my friends this is just not the case," Sundas, an Oxford university graduate with a PhD in sociology, told Reuters. "My husband left it up to me as he doesn't practise ritualistic religion. We both have a mixed identity, our religious, ethnic, and national identities are all important to us. His eastern side really appealed to me but also the fact that he is quite liberal, in an open-minded way. We really are the modern Muslim generation."

End to End A self-proclaimed ‘cycling novice’ took on a challenge very few keen cyclists will have even comprehended as he made his way from Lands End to John O’Groats all in the name of charity. 27-year-old Naheem Yacub, from Burley, set himself the target at the start of the year to complete a total of 2,313 miles within 12 months. Raising money for the British Red Cross and Leeds Children’s Hospital, his task has so far seen him run marathon distances on a daily basis whilst this latest epic bike ride has pushed him well and beyond the half way target. “The furthest I had been on a bike before this was around 25 miles and that was in March so you could say I was going into the challenge unprepared,” he said. “It has only now just begun to sink in that I travelled 1,010 miles in two weeks purely through leg power. “It goes to show that if you put your mind to it, you can do anything really.” Beginning his route at the southern most point of the country, Naheem joined up with a team of cyclists who were preparing to complete the journey at the same time. Through downpours of rain,
and over hilly terrain, the cyclists rode for 14 days non-stop before finally reaching their goal in the north of Scotland at the iconic John O’Groats. Setting off on the bikes everyday at around 8.30am, the group stopped only three times during each leg to have lunch and a small ‘breather’ before continuing on their route. At times, Naheem says the temptation to just stop did come over him but he was always given that bit of extra motivation to continue. “After the first day my legs were in agony and it was making it really hard to sleep because I had never done anything like this before,” he said. “The hills were just going on forever and were really taking it out of me. One thing that kept me going was these two elderly cyclists in the group who had come all the way from America to do the route. “One was 71 and the other 74, and I just thought if they have the motivation and will to do this, then so do I.” He added: “At times rain was coming down heavily and it literally felt like someone was throwing stones at you. “I just thought of the children in the hospital and those suffering

abroad, whose circumstances are much harder than mine and that really kept me going.” Eventually, after overcoming all obstacles, including a broken chain, Naheem completed his challenge. With around 500 miles left to cover, before he reaches his 2,313 mile target, the rest of the journey will be completed on foot with the marathon runs returning. City looks to retain ‘Curry Crown’ For the past three years there has undoubtedly been only one place in the country which deserves to call itself the Curry Capital of Britain - Bradford. With an array of restaurants serving up the finest dishes to curry lovers nationwide, the city has earned itself a valued reputation as a dining hot spot. And now, with the 12th annual Curry Capital competition underway, 20 teams, made up of four restaurants each, will once again compete for the top prize. Bradford council is already actively promoting the city, but face tough competition from the likes of Leicester, Birmingham, Cardiff, parts of London and even relative newcomer Brighton. Glasgow, who hold four titles, the same number as Bradford, will be side-lined this year due to their hosting of the Commonwealth Games giving the Yorkshire city a further incentive to win this year. Peter Grove, organiser of Curry Capital of Britain for National Curry Week in October, said this year’s competition is likely to be the toughest yet. “The voting public really seem to have the idea of what we are looking for,” he said. “In the past they may have given their vote frivolously, but now they are curry connoisseurs with the
result that the city teams are stronger than ever. “The possibilities are really open for Bradford to win yet again or a totally unsuspected city to receive the title for 2014. It is all down to the judges and those valuable public votes.” Bradford’s team this year is made up of Kipling's, based in Greengates, Shimla Spice and Zaara's, in Shipley, and Cleckheaton’s Aakash. Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council’s executive member for employment, skills and culture said she believed the city deserves to make it ‘four in a row’. “We have held the Curry Capital crown for three years running now,” she said. “I'd really love us to secure it for a fourth year in a row, but we can only do it if Bradford residents support us and vote for their favourite restaurant. Let’s make it happen.” Tricia Tillotson, Bradford Council’s Tourism Manager added: “Coming to Bradford for a curry is not only for residents of Bradford, but is also on the ‘to do’ list for many tourists. “Winning the title again can only help to continue to boost the reputation of Bradford as a place to come for a great curry.” The winner of this year’s contest will be announced on 20th October.

Stripped of British Citizenship Scotland Yard Chief says tougher sanctions may be needed for British extremists Britain’s most senior police officer has backed growing calls to see British extremists, who travel abroad to fight, stripped of their passports. Metropolitan Police Crime Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said it should be seen as a ‘privilege’ to live in this country and by going to war zones as aspiring terrorists, that privilege should be removed. Currently, it is estimated that between 500 and 600 Britons are fighting in Syria, with roughly three quarters of them from the capital. Sir Bernard said earlier this month that Scotland yard is prepared should a large number of them return at the same time, and even called for the return of control orders. Such a move would see terror suspects forced to move to a different part of the country where they could then be place under a lengthy curfew as they are investigated. The control orders were replaced in Britain by less restrictive Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures, for suspects who can neither be deported nor charged. Speaking on LBC Radio, Sir Bernard said: “It seems to me it’s a privilege to have a passport and be a citizen of this country, and if you’re going to start fighting in another country on behalf of another state, or against another state, it seems to me that you’ve made a choice about where you want to be. “[The control orders] were stopped because the threat was reduced and quite properly they were seen as too intrusive.
STANCE: Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, head of London’s Metropolitan Police Service, says control orders may have to return to address the number of British citizens travelling to war zones to fight
“It seems to me it’s a privilege to have a passport and be a citizen of this country, and if you’re going to start fighting in another country on behalf of another state, or against another state, it seems to me that you’ve made a choice about where you what to be. “But I think these things have got to be considered when the drum beat changes, and it's clear that the drum beat has changed.” Earlier this month, London Mayor, Boris Johnson, said he would back a law which saw those who ‘continue to give allegiance
to a terrorist state’ lose their British citizenship. He also said that those who travel to war areas, without alerting local authorities, should be presumed to be doing so for terrorism reasons.

s children across Bradford return to school, and parents head back to work, now is the time to enrol your kids with the city’s number one after school club. Over the summer holidays, Raising Explorers has seen an influx of children from across the city take advantage of the excellent facilities on offer whilst busy parents continue to work. And now, as even more carers head back to their 9-to-5 jobs, a greater number of families will be considering the best course of action to keep their children safe after school hours.
“ The After School Learning Club” Raising Explorers prides itself on providing a secure, educational environment for schoolchildren aged between 5 and 15, with opening times as late as 7.30pm every day. Their fully trained staff are available to provide extra tuition in lessons, from core subjects to religious studies, with all needs catered for to ensure no homework project or important revision is overlooked. Operating out of Manningham, the Ofsted
registered club already has more than 120 happy service users and there is still time for your child to add their names to the list. Bradford is understandably a huge place with schools all across the city often making it hard for families to get access to the top after school clubs. This isn’t the case with Raising Explorers as all children are now able to take advantage of the expert services with a pick-up service available from schools
across the city. Simply tell the club’s team where your child will be, and what time their school day finishes, and a fully registered driver will pick them up and return them to the base at the Carlisle Business Centre.
Children can stay at the site until the late evening, giving parents the opportunity to collect them in their own time, in the knowledge that they are in the most capable hands. Contact Raising Explorers today and see for yourself how the after school club can help your child reach their full potential.

Lost Prophets I
In a previous article, we reported on the case of Prophet Plc –v- Huggett where the High Court found that due to an error in the drafting, a restrictive covenant was rendered ineffective to protect the employer and to correct that the Court added words to the covenant to make it commercially effective and enforceable. That decision was highly contentious, given that it went against the conventionally held view that the Courts generally do not interfere with or alter private contracts entered into between parties, and it was always likely that that decision would be appealed. By way of a brief summary, Prophet Plc was a software developer for the fresh produce industry. Mr Huggett was a Sales Manager for Prophet. His contract contained a 12 month non-compete clause from selling Prophet software following the termination of his employment with them. Mr Huggett joined a competitor which sold competing software but, technically, not Prophet software. Therefore, on a literal interpretation, the non-compete clause provided no protection to Prophet, as only Prophet sold Prophet software. Mr Huggett appealed the High Court decision and the Court of Appeal has now overturned that decision. The Appeal Court decided that although the Court could take an approach whereby a restriction could be re-written to reflect the intention of the parties, such approach should only be considered in circumstances where the restriction is
ambiguous. In the Prophet case however, the Court of Appeal found that the restriction was not ambiguous, it was simply badly drafted. The Court of Appeal therefore concluded that Prophet was stuck with the restriction as originally drafted. In the words of the Court: “Prophet made it’s.... bed and it must now lie upon it”. The case provides a cautionary tale that if a restrictive covenant is badly drafted then the employer may be stuck with a useless covenant. It highlights the fact that an employer cannot rely on the Court to rescue it from a badly drafted covenant but instead it must ensure that during the drafting of the covenant it considers carefully what competitive activities and eventualities it wants the employee to be prevented from engaging in following the termination of his employment. All covenants should be carefully drafted to ensure that they properly protect the employer’s interests as fully as possible. A well drafted restriction is likely to mean that it may never be breached (as it will act as an adequate deterrent) and if it is breached then it gives the employer a strong negotiating hand with which to settle a dispute with a former employee out of court. At Blacks, we can draft contracts of employment providing protection for the employer as well as advising on the enforceability of restrictive covenants and any disputes arising from those covenants.

arlisle Business Centre,” Habiba says “is a real hub of energy. I liked the idea of being surrounded by businesses and people who use the centre for various things. And, being a new start-up, the business centre made me realise the potential of what I could be and helped open doors I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to do on my own.” Habiba Naib of Ya Habibi Designs is one of 70 businesses now operating from the Carlisle Business Centre, offering a range of print and graphic design services to both businesses and the general public. Habiba has over 16 years of graphic design and print experience, but only launched her business earlier this year after making the decision to pursue her life-long ambition of becoming selfemployed. Habiba’s first couple of months in business were crucial and she benefited greatly from the on-going advice and guidance given by Carlisle Business Centre’s Business Coach. “As a new start-up, getting the right information is imperative and accountants weren’t always the most helpful,” she said. “Support like this in business centres is rare, but should be standard.” Carlisle Business Centre is dedicated to supporting the needs of early stage start-up’s and growing
businesses. For some start up’s in Bradford, small offices can still seem unaffordable, resulting in many to run their businesses from home. Carlisle Business Centre offers virtual services and shared office facilities that can provide a step up with minimal cost. Equally, our various sized offices can easily help you move up into a private office when you’re in a position to do so with minimal disruption. Other support programmes delivered include the Big Boost, which offers an investment of up to £15k worth of services for both new startups and businesses looking to expand. Carlisle Business Centre is situated in a former 36,000 sqft textile mill and is officially recognised as a landmark in Manningham.

COFFEE and CREME Open every day, 9am-11pm 64 Manningham Lane, Bradford, BD1 3EB (Image courtesy of Ayma Ejaz)
here are some things in this world that were just meant to be together, and in Bradford there is no better combination than Coffee and Crème. Manningham Lane’s latest venue is a chic coffee shop where people can put their feet up and relax whilst enjoying some of the freshest hot drinks in the city. The modern, rustic decor compliments the delicious menu, which not only includes freshly ground coffee, but an array of hot drinks from luxurious lattes to calming cappuccinos. Bring the whole family down and take advantage of home-made sandwiches or why not treat the children to a slice of cake or a scoop of creamy ice cream, available in a rainbow of flavours. Coffee and Crème was set up as a joint venture by the Food2Go team and Whitehall Properties. Open until late every night, the shop allows coffee-lovers in Bradford the chance to enjoy a hot drink at any time convenient to them, something director, Shamus Ul-Haq, says Bradford is currently missing. “I am a coffee lover myself and I love having a latte,” he said. “The problem is that I work every day until nine or ten o’clock so once I finish I have nowhere to go and relax. “This place will be open from morning until 11pm so people who are busy through the day can have somewhere to come and enjoy themselves with some great coffee and cake.” Saeed Younas, fellow director, added: “I have a lot of clients who I have to entertain on a regular basis and a place like this is ideal. “There are many more businesses in and around Bradford who will be able to take advantage of this new concept.” Coffee and Crème was officially opened at a ceremony on Thursday 4th September, with friends, family and guests in attendance. To see for yourself what makes Coffee and Crème the perfect blend, head down to Manningham Lane and experience fresh coffee the way it should be.

Where your honest and genuine partner awaits you
A
re you a professional businessman or woman who is yet to find that one perfect person in your life, well search no more as your future partner could be much closer than you think. Asian Elite UK was launched in May this year as a private matrimonial service which caters for prospective partners from across the UK. Priding itself on providing a completely confidential and genuine service to all clients, the agency is like no other, with every member efficiently checked before they can even sign up. Set up by Durrey Shahwar as a way of fulfilling her belief that there is ‘somebody out there for everyone’, the company already has lots of prospective clients signed nationwide. Durrey is herself a well-travelled professional, having lived in cities across nine countries, in Europe, Asia and the FarEast, whilst even working around the world for the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia. Having lived the jet-set lifestyle into her mid-30’s, the then single, cosmopolitan businesswoman decided it was time to settle down with a family of her own. Now, happily married with two children, she is hoping to show other Asian women,
and men, that life doesn’t end at 30, and the right partner is out there for you. “I have experienced it myself, getting married in my 30’s and then having my beautiful girls,” she said. “Asian Elite is not a site for just housewives to sign up, it is much more than that. The audience is businesspeople and those with academic careers who need someone in their lives that they can share their experiences with. “More and more Asian women are going into business themselves and don’t have the time to find a genuine, honest partner. “We are here to help find that person whilst also ensuring you can keep your own busy life.” Upon registering for the service, all clients are CRB checked, with photo ID and identification processes carried out, before access to the member’s area is granted. This doesn’t have to be the end of the personal service for yourself, with Durrey always on hand to provide support and advice to members making their first steps on the site – at the end of the day this is not just a normal match making site. Durrey will visit client’s homes and interact with family members to ensure everybody understands how the process works and learn what the whole family would like to see. For the more traditional families, the option of a guardian accompanying the client on the first date is also available. With offices in London, Bradford and Sheffield, as well as the option of a home visit, there has never been a better time to start searching for your perfect partner. Asian Elite has ambitions of expanding internationally in the future with countries from Pakistan, India, America and Canada all potential bases.

Family plea to radicalised daughter RADICALISED: Aqsa Mahmood left her Glasgow home in November and travelled to Syria after becoming radicalised
Parents fear for 20-year-old Glasgow girl who travelled to Syria and married an Isis fighter The parents of a ‘bedroom radical’ who travelled to Syria and married an Isis fighter have pleaded for her to return home. Aqsa Mahmood, 20, left her Glasgow home in November after becoming radicalised, her family said. Muzaffar and Khalida Mahmood said they were horrified that their ‘sweet, peaceful, intelligent’ child had joined jihadists in Syria. They said in a statement: “We still love you, Aqsa, but we now have to put your family, your brother and sisters first as you have betrayed us, our community and the people of Scotland when you took this step. “You have torn the heart out of our family and changed our lives forever. Please come home.” They warned: “If our daughter, who had all the chances and freedom in life, could become a bedroom radical, then it is possible for this to happen to any family.” Privately-educated Aqsa is reported to have encouraged terrorist acts via a Twitter account under the name Umm Layth. The account has since been deleted. She travelled through Turkey to Aleppo in Syria in November and was reported missing to police. Before disappearing she attended Craigholme School then university and was ‘well integrated into society’, her parents said. They said she was brought up ‘with love and affection in a happy home’. Mrs Mahmood wiped away tears as solicitor Aamer Anwar read a statement on her and her husband's behalf at a press conference in Glasgow. They said: “She may believe that the jihadists of Isis are her new family but they are not and are simply using her.” The parents, who remained silent during the conference,
said in the statement: “Aqsa was always a very sweet, peaceful, intelligent child and inquisitive about everything. “We had high hopes for her and would have loved for her to be a doctor and to save lives. “We dreamed that one day we would see her married with children but sadly that no longer looks likely. “As parents we would have liked for her to listen to us but we gave her everything
home while she still can. They are telling her that she is wrong, that she is deluded if she thinks she is helping people in Syria.” The solicitor said Aqsa, a British national, had become ‘concerned and upset’ by media and online reports of the killing in Syria and had told her parents she wanted to help. Her parents, who are liaising with Police Scotland, said: “Isis are killing in the
possible in terms of love, freedom and education and she chose the path which we could never approve of.” They added: “All parents want to be proud of their children but sadly we now feel nothing but sorrow and shame for Aqsa. “We are not in denial and do not make any excuses for her and absolutely condemn her involvement in Isis and recent comments. “But she is our daughter and we still love her, fear for her life and would urge her to return home whilst she still can.” Aqsa contacted her parents after arriving in Syria and had kept in touch through social media until yesterday, when newspapers reported of her involvement with Isis. Mr Anwar said: “Because of yesterday, all contact appears to have terminated with their daughter. “So, they are hoping that this plea will go out to their daughter and that she will think again and return home. “They want her to come
name of religion and claiming to defend the weak, but by joining with them our daughter is brainwashed and deluded and helping those engaged in genocide. “There is no smoking gun, no family member, no fundamentalist preacher that can be blamed for her radicalisation. “Aqsa, like many young people in our community, was naturally angry and frustrated at the loss of innocent life in the Middle East but this is not the way to help.” They added: “We are concerned that a growing climate of fear in this country means that children will not discuss how they feel with their family and friends, and this will only spell disaster for society. “We know that in the days and months ahead we will be scouring social media for clues of whether our daughter is still alive. “As we try to hold back the tears today, we feel we have lost our child.”

NHS Trust put into special measures One of the largest hospital trusts in England is to be put into a failure regime because of ‘serious failures’ in patient safety. East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is to be put into special measures by health regulator Monitor after experts identified issues with safety and leadership. Inspectors for the Care Quality Commission (CQC) deemed that the trust, which serves a population of more than 750,000 across five different hospitals, was ‘inadequate’ in August. Concerns were raised about a culture of bullying at the organisation and inspectors identified staff shortages in A&E, children's care and at night. Risks to patients were not always identified and when they were, not consistently acted upon, the inspectors said - and incidents involving patient safety were not always identified and reported. They noted a ‘worrying disconnect’ between the trust’s leaders and frontline staff - and a number of clinical services were
‘poorly led’. The inspection team also noticed that in a number of areas around the trust, the buildings and equipment were ‘poorly maintained’. Monitor said an improvement director will be appointed at the trust to provide support and to ensure it is making progress. The trust has also been tasked with publishing monthly updates on how it is improving services. “The trust needs to urgently improve the safety of care for patients, and strengthen its management to better support frontline staff,” said Paul Streat, regional director at Monitor. “By putting the trust into special measures we can ensure they turn things around quickly. “Senior leaders need to listen to and work with all staff to understand and tackle problems on their wards. We will help the trust to do this, and to make lasting improvements to the services that people in East Kent rely on.”
No new airport for London
Despite being backed by one of the country’s most charismatic characters, plans to build a new major airport in the east of London have fallen at the first hurdle. The Airports Commission dismissed on Tuesday London Mayor, Boris Johnson’s plans to construct the new site in favour of expanding either Gatwick or Heathrow next year. London’s airports are some of the busiest in the world and are already near their capacity on a daily basis. Business groups say more runways are needed to handle traffic from fast-growing emerging economies and fear inaction could deter international investors and curb growth. But the capital's skies are already crowded and the prospect of more noise and pollution has made it a toxic political issue eight months before a national election. A decision on where to locate new runways has already been delayed for years because of u-turns by successive governments. The Airports Commission said the Thames Estuary idea, backed by Mr Johnson, had not made the shortlist as it was too expensive and complicated - at up to 112 billion pounds, it would cost around five times as much as the other three short-listed options. “We think it's too risky. The logistical challenges of shifting an airport 70 miles across London are immense,” Howard Davies, chair of the commission, told the BBC. “We simply think that there's a strong chance you would never get it built.”
DENIED: London Mayor, Boris Johnson, had backed the proposals of constructing an airport in Thames Estuary, nicknamed Boris Island

Stripped of passports New plans have been announced this past week which will see suspected Islamist militants stripped of their passports upon return to Britain. The proposals arrive just days after the country’s terrorism alert was raised to its second-highest level by Prime Minister David Cameron, to combat the threat posed by radicalised Britons returning from Syria and Iraq. Actions of the Islamic State in recent weeks, including the beheading of US journalists by a militant believed to be British,
have also caused further worries. Cameron said this new legislation would be targeted at giving police temporary powers to seize a suspect’s passport at the border to give authorities time to investigate the individual. “We have all been shocked and sickened by the barbarism we have witnessed in Iraq this summer,” Cameron told parliament. “There are two key areas where we need to strengthen our powers to fill specific gaps in our armoury. These are around preventing
suspects from travelling and dealing decisively with those already here who pose a risk.” He continued by adding that the government would now consult further on ways to prevent Britons from returning home if they are believed to have pledged allegiance to an extremist cause. This would extend existing powers which can only be applied to foreign nationals, naturalised citizens and those with dual nationalities. Lawmakers immediately questioned the legality of some of the proposals with the government's former top lawyer, Dominic Grieve, saying he was concerned that British nationals could be prevented from returning to the country. “Not only does it offend principles of international law, it actually would offend basic principles of our own common law as well,” Grieve said. In response, Cameron said the current methods did work yet it was important to strengthen any weaknesses.
“There are two key areas where we need to strengthen our powers to fill specific gaps in our armoury. These are around preventing suspects from travelling and dealing decisively with those already here who pose a risk.”

Primary school teacher strangled to death
A woman who was found critically injured at her Stockport home has sadly died. At around 1.50am on Monday 18th August 2014, police were called to Longford Road West, in north Reddish, following reports a 35-year-old woman had been attacked. Officers attended and the woman, now formally identified as Ruckshana Miah, was taken to hospital where she sadly died. A Home Office post mortem concluded her death was as a result of compression on the neck. Abdul Kashem Miah, 36, of Florist Street, Shaw Heath, appeared at Stockport Magistrates Court and was charged with attempted murder. He is next due to appear at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square on 10th September 2014. Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington, said: “Sadly Ruckshana's injuries proved fatal and a murder investigation is now underway. “Her family are clearly devastated and we would ask they be given time and space to grieve and come to terms with her tragic death. “Ruckshana was a mother to two young children, who now face having to grow up and live the rest of their lives without her, and that is simply heartbreaking.” In a statement her family, said: “Ruckshana was a wonderful daughter, mother, sister, aunty, cousin and friend that will be greatly missed by us all.” Des Howlett, Head Teacher of Broadoak Primary School where Rukshana worked, said: “Rukshana Miah was a wonderful and talented teacher at Broadoak Primary School in Ashton who touched the lives of everyone she met.
“Rukshana was the heart of the school, an outstanding teacher who was devoted to the success of the children that she taught. “She always wanted to be the best and for her children to be the best and her belief that anything was possible if you work hard enough had an impact on everyone she met. “Ruk was full of life and passion for the children that she taught and friends that she made. That same wonderful smile greeted every challenge, every child and every joke alike and her many friends knew that their friendships were firm and valuable. “She made us laugh and will continue to do so as we share memories and remember her jokes. We were and always will be extremely proud of having Rukshana as a teacher at our school and as a friend. “She was a natural teacher and a great friend and colleague. We are all very proud to have known her. “Ruk herself would always say that her greatest achievement was her children and her love and pride for them shone through every day. She was a fantastic mother who knew that time was precious and so was always doing something with them or taking them to places. “They were her life and made her laugh whether she liked it or not. She brought them up to be respectful and polite but they have Ruk’s own wonderful cheekiness and sense of fun. They will continue to be a credit to her. “Her loss is absolutely devastating. Ruk was the best of us and will always be remembered. Our thoughts are with Ruk’s children and family at this terrible time. Broadoak will be a sadder place without her, we have lost one of the best.”

‘Most Wanted’ international tax criminals back in the UK
WANTED: HMRC state that Ahmed Salim Khezri’s fraud is estimated at over £2.2 million
A group of the UK’s top tax fugitives have been brought back to the UK to face justice following a global HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) initiative. Of the ‘Most Wanted’ fugitives who fled abroad before or during their trial, five have been brought back to the UK in the past year to serve their prison terms. Building on this success, HMRC published more photos of Britain’s Most Wanted tax fugitives, including Ahmed Salim Khezri from Illminster, Rochdale, Greater Manchester, and asking for the public to play their part in helping to track these criminals down. Khezri, an Iranian national, is wanted in connection with a huge cigarette smuggling conspiracy. He was part of an organised crime group that stood trial at
Manchester Crown Court, found guilty in his absence and sentenced to a six year jail term in April 2014. His part in the fraud is estimated at over £2.2 million. Jennie Granger, HMRC’s Director General of Enforcement and Compliance, said: “Tax fraudsters line their pockets at the UK’s expense. “The individuals on our Most Wanted list have been charged but fled the country to avoid justice, so it’s excellent news for all honest taxpayers that five fugitives on last year’s list have now been brought back to face the consequences. This is down to the determination of our people with the help and support of the general public. “We would like to thank the public for that help, and ask them to look at the 2014 list and help us
to bring back the rest. “These fugitives were involved in frauds that have collectively cost the UK over £844 million but the success of our campaign means those on the run should know that HMRC will relentlessly pursue them.” In the two years since HMRC first published the images of its top tax fraud absconders, three million public viewings have resulted directly in the capture of some of the fugitives. In addition, HMRC now knows where 16 of the Most Wanted fugitives are. Where legally possible, HMRC will seek extraditions with the help of the Crown Prosecution Service and other partners, both in the UK and overseas to ensure as many are brought back to the UK as possible.
Anyone with information on these fugitives should contact the Tax Evasion Hotline on 0800 788 887 or email via the HMRC website at www.hmrc.gov.uk/ reportingfraud/online. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Out of control
China sacked two officials who ransacked a restaurant and beat the manager in a fit of rage over their small servings of food and cheap liquor, state media said on Thursday, amid a crackdown on extravagance by the country's top leaders. Li Jingli, the party secretary in Xingtangsi township in Shanxi province, was dining with eight other local officials, including the head of discipline inspection Liu Bin, when the quarrel with the restaurant manager
started. The People's Daily reported the two officials were upset at being served ‘small dishes and cheap cigarettes and liquor’. The group forced the manager to drink liquor, and Liu beat the person while Li smashed up the restaurant, the online version of the party mouthpiece said. “They marched off, the scene in complete disorder, leaving no way for the restaurant to continue normal operations,” it said.
Rice-bucket challenge
Jihadists beheadings prompt Muslim revulsion Brutal beheadings recorded on video by the jihadist Islamic State are intended to terrorise the group's enemies, but are also angering and alienating Muslims the group claims to represent. On Tuesday 2nd September, the jihadist group released a new video purporting to show the beheading of Steven Sotloff, the second US journalist to be decapitated by its fighters in a fortnight. The video was described as "sickening" and provoked widespread anger as well as fear - which experts say is precisely the group's intention. For Rita Katz, director of extremist monitoring group SITE, releasing videos of the beheadings of Sotloff and journalist James Foley before him "has a straight-forward purpose from an analytical standpoint: intimidation". "The brutality demonstrated in the video says, 'Don't mess with us," she said. The Islamic State claim "to be the only 'true Muslims' and resort to murder and mayhem as a psychological tactic to terrorise other people," said Asma Afsaruddin, a professor at a religious studies department. Beheading has become almost a calling card for IS, which has used the method on opponents ranging from Syrian and Iraqi government troops to activists who have opposed its abuses. As well as the two US journalists, in the last two weeks IS has also released videos of a Lebanese soldier and a Kurdish fighter being beheaded. The method has clearly been effective in spreading fear: when the group advanced in Iraq this year, hundreds of thousands fled in terror. As a tactic, decapitation by jihadists is not new - extremists beheaded US journalist Daniel Pearl in Pakistan in
2002. It also became a favoured method of Al-Qaeda's Iraqi affiliate, a precursor of today's Islamic State, under the leadership of militant Abu Musab alZarqawi. With Zarqawi's death in a US raid in Iraq in 2006 and the weakening of his group, its use declined. But with the emergence of the Islamic State, which has broken with Al-Qaeda and declared its own Islamic "caliphate" in Syrian and Iraqi territory, decapitation has once again become a potent tool. Katz said videos of the brutal tactic also served the "alarming" purpose of "recruitment to jihad," by attracting a small minority of radicalised Muslims impressed by such violent excesses. "A dangerous community with a dark view of the world has interpreted the video in a celebratory and empowering vein," Katz wrote in an analysis for the group. But for most in the Muslim world and elsewhere, the Islamic State's tactics produce revulsion and anger. "The acts and practices of IS in terms of beheadings and insulting minorities are at complete odds with the message of Islam and Muslim belief," said Sheikh Khaldun Araymit, secretary-general of Lebanon's Supreme Islamic Council. "Islam is mercy and love and communication with the other," he said. "The heinous acts carried out by IS not only contradict Islam but are offensive to it." Muslims express similar feelings online, taking to Facebook and Twitter after each new IS outrage, whether the crucifixion of Syrians or the reported trafficking of Yazidi women kidnapped in Iraq. Scholars of Islam say there is no crime for which beheading is religiously
prescribed, though the tactic was used in war by Muslims and non-Muslims alike at the time of Prophet Mohammed and after. "Beheading certainly was the common way to carry out criminal prosecutions throughout Islamic history, and it therefore was the default," said Haider Ala Hamoudi, an Islamic law expert and professor at Pittsburgh University law school. "The custom developed among peoples who were aware that it was on balance much less painful than other available means of execution." Beheading remains in use in Saudi Arabia, but Araymit noted that there it is used only "after a trial in the presence of a judge and where a pardon is not given." Rights groups have criticised its continued use there however, and accused the Saudi judicial system of serious flaws. Officials at Egypt's prestigious AlAzhar religious authority have rejected the Islamic State and its practices as unIslamic. "These criminal acts have nothing to do with Islam" Azhar official Abbas Shoman told AFP. "There is no basis for them in Islamic law." "These people do not represent Islam," he added. Online and on television, Muslims have been increasingly responding to IS atrocities. Twitter user @LibyaLiberty, writing after Foley's killing, said: "If you think Muslims aren't condemning ISIS.. you're not listening to Muslims." "Feel free to quote: 'I, a Muslim, do hereby condemn ISIS for cutting off the heads of people, including mine, if they could'," she said, using another name for the extremist group.
The famous ‘ice bucket’ challenge is inspiring thousands of Indians to follow suit, but with a twist - they are replacing ice with rice in a bid to help the country's vast population of poor, hungry people. The challenge, going viral on social media, involves donating a bucket of rice to someone in need and clicking a picture to share online, with the tag: #RiceBucketChallenge, to raise awareness. Started by 38-year-old journalist Manju Latha Kalanidhi in the southern city of Hyderabad, the movement's Facebook
page defines it as a ‘local challenge for local needs’ and has clocked more than 52,000 likes so far. The inspiration was drawn from the ‘ice bucket’ challenge, in which people pour a bucket of ice-cold water over their heads to encourage donations for research into Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a neurodegenerative disease. Celebrities such as software tycoon Bill Gates and tennis great Roger Federer have participated. India is the world's second-biggest rice consumer, with reserves of 21.2million tonnes of the grain by 1st July.
Beauty Queen dethroned
South Korean organisers of the Miss Asia Pacific World pageant threatened to call in the police on Wednesday in their row with dethroned Myanmar beauty queen May Myat Noe, demanding she return a gem-studded tiara from her home country. Pageant founder Choi Youn accused May Myat Noe of absconding with the tiara, which media have said is worth more than £60,000 and which she won in South Korea in May, becoming Myanmar's first international beauty queen. She was dethroned because she was ungrateful, untrustworthy
and had lied, the pageant organisers said in a statement reported by Asian media. “It is now a matter of national image and reputation and she should be held accountable for (the tiara),” Choi told Reuters in Seoul. He said organisers planned to file a complaint with police. May Myat Noe told a packed news conference on Tuesday in Yangon, Myanmar's biggest city, that she was still queen when she returned home with the tiara. It was only after arriving back home that she received a letter informing her she had been dethroned.
US send more troops
President Barack Obama has ordered an increase of about 350 troops in Baghdad to protect the U.S. Embassy in the Iraqi capital whilst also sending top officials to the Middle East to ‘build a stronger regional partnership’ against Islamic State militants. The actions reflect the growing US concern about the threat posed by the Sunni Muslim militants who have captured parts of Iraq and Syria. The White House said the additional troops
heading to Baghdad would not serve in a combat role. Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said the move to augment a U.S. force already in Baghdad providing security at the large embassy compound and its support facilities would bring the total number of military personnel to bolster diplomatic security in Iraq to about 820. Obama left Washington on Tuesday to visit Estonia and then attend a NATO summit in Wales.

Al-Qaida leader says it has expanded into India PAKISTAN: Army chief steps in to quell disagreement
Al-Qaida has expanded into India, the leader of the terror group said in a video released this week, vowing that its militants would bring Islamic law to the entire subcontinent and ‘wage jihad against its enemies’. At least three Indian states with large Muslim populations have been put on alert in the wake of the video's release, local TV stations reported, though there was no indication of an increased security presence. The new group "is the fruit of a blessed effort of more than two years to gather the mujahedeen in the Indian subcontinent into a single entity," al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahri said in the video, which was seen online by the SITE monitoring group. While his comments raised concerns in India, al-Zawahri's message seemed largely directed at his own rivals in the international jihad movement, and with raising al-Qaida's profile in the wake of repeated successes by the Islamic State militant group. Al-Qaida has been increasingly overshadowed by the Islamic State, whose fighters have captured wide swaths of Syria and Iraq and recently executed two American journalists. Al-Qaida "is struggling for its legitimacy in the eyes of the radicalized Muslim world," said
Ajai Sahni, a top Indian security analyst with the New Delhi-based Institute for Conflict Management. "Osama bin Laden has been killed and (al-Qaida's) entire top leadership, apart from Zawahri and a few others, one by one have been decimated by the American drone attacks," he said. While al-Zawahri's statement referred to the "Indian subcontinent" — a term that most commonly refers to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal — his comments were widely seen as directed at India, a largely Hindu nation with a large Muslim minority. Al-Zawahri said the group, Qaedat al-Jihad in the Indian subcontinent, would fight for an Islamic state and laws across the region, ‘which was part of the Muslims' territories before it was occupied by the infidel enemy’. The leader of the new group, Essam Omar, said in an audio recording released with the video, that Jews and Hindus — who he referred to as ‘apostates of India’ — ‘will watch your destruction by your own eyes’. Fighters will ‘storm your barricades with cars packed with gunpowder’, Omar said, decrying what he called the region's ‘injustice toward Muslims’. Until recently, India had largely
seen itself as beyond the recruiting territory of international jihadists like al-Qaida. Over the past few months, however, the Islamic State has grown in prominence in India, and is increasingly believed to be gaining followers there. Last month, an Indian engineering student who had traveled to Iraq with friends, and who was thought to have joined the Islamic State, was reportedly killed. Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh met Thursday morning with top security and intelligence officials to discuss the threat. A spokesman for India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party said the statement was "a matter of serious concern. But there is nothing to worry about. We have a strong government at the federal level." India, though, has a notoriously underfunded and ill-trained security infrastructure. In 2008, a small group of Pakistani militants attacked Mumbai, India's financial hub, effectively shutting down the city for days and killing 166 people. New Delhi has also waged a long-running insurgency war in Kashmir, India's only majorityMuslim state, with militants fighting to bring independence to the Himalayan region or join it to neighboring Pakistan. The fighting has left thousands of people dead.
Weeks of mounting antigovernment protests in Pakistan had been enough to convince five of the powerful army's 11 Corps Commanders that it was time for them to step in and force embattled Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign. According to a minister close to military circles, top generals met in the garrison city of Rawalpindi at the end of August as demonstrations raged in nearby Islamabad. Thousands of protesters had just tried to storm Sharif's residence. At the tense, four-hour conclave, Pakistan's democratic process was once again in peril, with the military pondering another intervention in a country that has seen power change hands more often through coups than elections. But army chief Raheel Sharif decided the time was not right to overthrow the civilian leadership, and moved to quell any disagreement in his ranks by
overruling the hawks and declaring the crisis must be solved through politics, not force. Soon afterwards, the army issued a brief statement, reaffirming its commitment to democracy, and the threat of a coup, at least for now, had passed. The minister, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of discussing the inner workings of the military, said at least five generals had been pushing for weeks for the army to take a more ‘active role’ in defusing the crisis. "The time for the army to be neutral is over," was how the minister summed up the message from dissenters around the table. Two military sources confirmed this version of events. They, like the minister, spoke on condition of anonymity. A senior security source added: "Raheel Sharif is not interested in direct intervention. The tanks aren't going to come rolling in. This army believes in compromise."

No majority Muslim country sits in top 25 list of following Islamic economic teachings An Iranian-born academic at George Washington University in America has said that the world’s most faithful country to the values of the Quran is Ireland. Next are Denmark, Sweden and the UK. Hossein Askari, Professor of International Business and International Affairs at George Washington University said a study by himself and colleague Dr Scheherazde S Rehman, also rates Israel (at number 27) as being more compliant with the ideals of the Quran than any predominantly Muslim country. Not a single majority Muslim country made the top 25 and no Arab country is in the top 50. He said that when their ‘Islamicity index’ was applied only Malaysia (33) and Kuwait (42) featured in its top 50 countries, compared to the US at 15, while France is at 17. Saudi Arabia rated 91st, with Qatar at 111th. In doing the study they applied the ideals of Islam in the areas of a society’s economic achievements, governance, human and

political rights, and international relations, he said. On that index: “Muslim countries do very badly,” he said and accused them of using religion as an instrument of power. Last November, Prof Askari said: “We must emphasize that many countries that profess Islam and are called Islamic are unjust, corrupt, and underdeveloped and are in fact not ‘Islamic’ by any stretch of the imagination. “Looking at an index of
Economic Islamicity, or how closely the policies and achievements of countries reflect Islamic economic teachings - Ireland, Denmark, Luxembourg, Sweden, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Singapore, Finland, Norway, and Belgium round up the first 10.” In their ‘Overall Islamicity Index’, a measure that encompasses laws and governance, human and political rights, international relations, and economic factors, Prof Askari, added: “The rankings are much the
same: New Zealand, Luxembourg, Ireland, Iceland, Finland, Denmark, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Netherlands; and again only Malaysia (38) and Kuwait (48) make it into the top 50 from Muslim countries,” he said. “If a country, society, or community displays characteristics such as unelected, corrupt, oppressive, and unjust rulers, inequality before the law, unequal opportunities for human development, absence of freedom of choice (including that of religion), opulence alongside poverty, force, and aggression as the instruments of conflict resolution as opposed to dialogue and reconciliation, and, above all, the prevalence of injustice of any kind, it is prima facie evidence that it is not an Islamic community. “Islam is, and has been for centuries, the articulation of the universal love of Allah for his creation and for its unity, and all that this implies for allencompassing human and economic development,” he concluded.
Australia power up India
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he would seal a civil nuclear deal to sell uranium to India on Friday, offering to ramp up supplies of energy to help the emerging Asian giant overcome chronic shortages. Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted Abbott with full state honours during his two-day visit to India. The two leaders were due to hold formal talks later and sign the deal to sell uranium for peaceful power generation.
“Prime Minister Modi and I will today sign a nuclear cooperation agreement,” Abbott told business leaders. In an editorial published in The Hindu he said the two sides had concluded the nuclear talks, which began about two years ago after Australia lifted a long-standing ban on selling uranium to energystarved India. “My hope is we can become [a] reliable source of energy resources and food security for India,” Abbott said.
Fatal Floods kill dozens
At least 73 people have been killed across Pakistan after heavy rains brought flash floods and caused homes to collapse in the Punjab and Kashmir regions, government officials said Friday. Most deaths occurred in the city of Lahore, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's powerbase, further damaging the government's standing after weeks of protests aimed at forcing the premier to step down. As the political crisis
dragged through its third week, people's attention turned to the devastation brought by the floods, with television channels showing live images of villages and towns inundated by muddy water. At least 43 people have been killed in Punjab province and 30 in the Himalayan region of Kashmir in recent days, officials said. In 2010, the worst floods in memory affected 20 million people in Pakistan.

Australian PM returns stolen 11th century idols to India Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott handed over to his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, two antique statues of Hindu deities, which were allegedly stolen from temples in Tamil Nadu before being bought by art galleries in Australia. During his meeting with Modi, Abbott returned the idols, one of which is a Nataraja - the dancing Shiva - which belonged to the Chola dynasty of the 11th-12th century. The other sculpture is of Ardhanariswara, which represents Shiva in half-female form, and dates back to the 10th century. Both the statues were allegedly stolen from temples in Tamil Nadu and their return was sought by India in March. Returning the sculptures is a testimony to Australia's good citizenship on such matters and the importance with which Australia views its relationship with India, Abbott's office said. The Nataraja statue, which is cast
in bronze, was purchased by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2004 for approximately 300,000 Australian dollars. In 2012, Kapoor, owner of the "Art of the Past" gallery in New York, was arrested in Germany and subsequently extradited to India. He is accused of conspiracy to commit burglary and smuggling from Tamil Nadu antique idols of Hindu deities belonging to Chola dynasty. The case is currently at the prosecution stage in Tamil Nadu and Australian authorities have been assisting in conducting investigations in the case in Australia. In March, the Ministy of External Affairs, had through India's High Commission in Canberra, made a formal proposal to the Australian Department of Attorney General by forwarding the request of the Tamil Nadu police for the return of the two idols.

THE LATEST ENTERTAINMENT AND CELEBRITY NEWS FROM BOLLYWOOD & HOLLYWOOD
Singh can sing, then anyone can He may have swayed us with his mesmerizing tone over the years, sung an array of chartbusters for several Bollywood hit films like ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Don’ etc etc etc. He may have lent his vocals for leading men of Bollywood from Shah Rukh Khan to Salman Khan to Aamir Khan to Hrithik Roshan and others, yet the very versatile singer Shaan is displeased with the ongoing trend. He recently spoke about the current sensation Yo Yo Honey Singh, how music has lost its essence, how singers now succumb to doing only item numbers, why people are crazy behind party anthems and much more.
Being a singer was considered an elite thing back then, what do you have to say about the current scenario with so many songsters flooding in the industry? SHAAN: Unless you can do something incredible with your voice you are just among millions who are singing today with their antics. Going back to the golden era is always going to be great and the voice is also genuine. I was probably among the last generation of singers whose voice is not being pitched. But even that changed from 20042005. Now even my voice is being pitched wherever I sing.
Is singing losing its sheen? SHAAN: If Honey Singh croons a number and considered as a song,
which is ideally what? - a rap or someone just talking in rhythm, then everyone can sing. If I ask you to sing ‘Lungi Dance’ even you will be able to. How difficult is that? And if that is accepted as his biggest hit, then the level of song writing and songs has dropped so hard that if I add four more notes people won’t be able to sing it. You just need to have fun beats, tune and lyrics to make a song today. Wherever I go my brief is only Honey Singh type gaane banao!
a party will you stop the DJ from playing the song? No. On the contrary you will dance to ‘Munni Badnaam’ quite happily. So it’s easy to raise questions but practically you have to stay with it. Kids are listening to such kind of stuff and enjoying. This is my profession, not my hobby or passion.
Do you consider Sonu Nigam as your closest contender, since you Don’t you think it is the order guys started out of the day? together and can do a SHAAN: Who am I to dictate lot of modulation with what works and what doesn’t. For the voice? the common man if it is working and if these songs are reaching out to them, then who can stop it? Earlier also there were raunchy lyrics like in the track ‘Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja’ but you never felt ashamed of it because the tune, the singing, the music, etc was done like a jazz song. But now the music ability has only dropped. So it’s the way you sing. If you sing a good song like ‘Hume Tumse Pyaar Kitna’ in an indecent way with a guttural tone, it will obviously sound sick. The tonality has to be perfect. If a situation is a cabaret and the girl is throwing herself on you how can the lyrics not be raunchy?
SHAAN: Sonu Nigam is more versatile than me. He is more talented than me and I’m not being modest. I am saying this in all honesty but I think I am next closest or second to him because we came around almost the same time. We did different kinds of songs. Even KK is one of the finest singers. We So, will you succumb to it? all are great SHAAN: I probably will because buddies. I have to survive. Today if you go to

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ actress Frieda Pinto strips for Bruno Mars’ music video
While she portrayed the role of a shy girl in Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, Frieda Pinto has gone out-and-out wild for Bruno Mars’ latest music video ‘Gorilla’. From being bold to doing bare-dare act to passionately kissing, the actress has done it all in the video. Frieda has displayed her wild side in the video with some erotic love-
making scenes with Bruno in the backseat of a car, trying to steam up the video. The so-called highlight of the video is when Frieda performs a seductive strip tease and ferociously tears off her leather jacket only to pose in the sexy lingerie. Frieda, who boldly did steamy and explicit sex scenes in her films ‘Immortals’ and ‘Trishna’ and some hot photoshoots, goes a step ahead giving some erogenous moves and expressions in this number! Interestingly, with ‘Bajirao Mastani’ Priyanka Chopra would be associating with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the third time, the first two being ‘RamLeela’ and ‘Mary Kom’. Asking Priyanka what made her accept ‘Bajirao Mastani’ she revealed: “Also to me Sanjay sir has been a huge guiding force since the time he has come into my life. “I admire him not only as a professional but also as a person. He is been really kind, very generous and very loving to me. And I know he will make this film very grand. I have always looked for reasons to work with him and I am very glad he chose me.”
Bollyland last year, the sensational singer has signed an eight city tour deal with LIVE Viacom18, called MTV Super Stage. Starting October, the ‘desi kalakaar’ who is said to perform alongside one of the leading ladies that feature in his album, will travel to Pune, Jaipur, Indore, Lucknow, Jalandhar, Gurgaon, Kolkata and Guwahati.

Hrithik Roshan shoots biggest action scene ever
Siddharth Anand, who is making ‘Bang Bang’ has managed to shoot the biggest action sequence ever in Bollywood. A chase sequence involving Hrithik Roshan driving a car had more than 120 cars in it. It was shot in Abu Dhabi and the makers were very careful that the pictures of the chase sequence didn’t get leaked. It was a well-guarded shoot. To ensure this mammoth task was carried successfully, Hollywood action director, Andy Armstrong was roped in to shoot the chase sequence. Before the actual filming, Hrithik did some dry runs of the car he was going to drive. Once he was comfortable with it, they stared filming. Also, all the cars from the shoot were hired from Abu Dhabi. They all were highend cars, but the car that Hrithik was using remains a mystery. ‘Bang Bang’ stars Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif in lead roles. Directed by Siddharth Raj Anand, the film is a remake of the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz film ‘Knight And Day’ and is set to release on 2nd October, 2014.

On food, Helen Mirren and ‘The Hundred Foot Journey’
One of Bollywood’s much-loved and critically acclaimed Om Puri, is back to spice up our viewing pleasure once again in another cross-cultural film; but this time, rather than the grey streets of England, his new film is shot beautifully in the midst of delicate French rural life, cobblestoned streets and cheery farmers' markets. After losing his wife and being uprooted from riots in Mumbai, Papa and his five children, including gifted Hassan (Dayal), relocate and start a desi eatery in a pretty little French village - opposite haughty Madame Mallory's (Academy Award winning actress Helen Mirren) Michelin-starred restaurant. Producers Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey were suggested the name of Om Puri to play the role of ‘Papa’ by the scriptwriter of the film titled ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’. “I was very surprised as the offer for the film came out of the blue. I was immediately interested. “On the surface it seems like a war between two restaurants, but really it’s about relationships, understanding other people’s culture, and learning how to live together peacefully,” says Om Puri speaking to the Asian Express. “I was very excited to be doing a mainstream film once again, and when I realised Helen
Mirren was to be part of it, I began to watch her films to see her work,” he added. “I was particularly impressed with her performance in ‘The Queen’ – she did a fabulous job portraying Queen Elizabeth II.” With Om already on the sets one week before Helen, when he heard that she had arrived for shooting, Om hurried over to her trailer just as she stepped out.
As soon as I approached her, I dropped to my knees, took her hand and kissed it… “what an honour to meet you your majesty” “As soon as I approached her, I dropped to my knees, took her hand and kissed it… ‘what an honour to meet you your majesty’, I said. “She was totally surprised and we all began laughing - I think I made a lasting impression and broke the ice nicely.” His relationship with Helen and her husband whilst on sets was a pleasurable one. Helen loves Indian cuisine and Om loves to cook. “I always stay at an apartment or hotel where I can cook,” adds Om. “I love to cook – I’m a
big fish and lentils fan, so when we were not filming, I would take food for Helen and we would eat, chat and talk about all sorts of things for hours. She even took a few recipes from me!” Talking about his career, Om says that he feels exceptionally blessed to how it’s all panned out. “I was only 20-years-old when I attended a drama school in Delhi for three years, and after that I spent two years at film school, before my first film in 1976,” he says. Having starred in over 100 films, the veteran Bollywood actor has played many unconventional roles and claims that he was paid ‘peanuts’ for some of his best work. When asked about whether he’d be hanging up his stage clothes any time soon, he stated: “I feel very blessed that I continue to work – I’d rather die than to give up working.”

Mini and Touring Superleggera, the tradition-steeped design and coach building house based in Milan, have brought the MINI Superleggera Vision to the UK for the first time at the highly exclusive Salon Privé – the British supercar show, this week. The MINI Superleggera Vision is on the one hand a classic roadster – a compact and agile two-seater – expressing the most
minimalist and emotional style of motoring; and on the other hand its electric drivetrain gives the car distinctly modern driving dynamics. BMW say that the car perpetuates what the Classic Mini started 55 years ago: reduction to the essentials. Its proportions indicate at first glance what the electrically powered Mini Superleggera Vision has to offer in terms of a driving experience: the stretched bonnet, long wheelbase and cool, short overhangs convey pure
driving fun. As in every Mini, the wheels are set widely on the body, promising a high degree of agility. The passenger cell is slightly set back, further underscoring the car's dynamic impression. The front of the roadster features the traditional Mini design icons: two circular headlights and a hexagonal grille. There are also striking classic sports car elements such as a wide track and distinctively curved wheel arches that give the front a dynamic presence.
Agile two-seater roadster concept for the Mini Superleggera
Classic coachwork construction in a cutting-edge interpretation. The striking element of the side view is the characteristic “Touring” line. It embodies both the high art of coachwork building and classic aesthetics. To this day, Touring Superleggera shapes large aluminium sheets by hand using the most performing frame structures. There are very few gaps in the body since it is constructed from large sheets of metal. The result is a closed look that conveys high-quality
elegance. The exterior and interior design of the Mini Superleggera Vision merge seamlessly. Only a surrounding shoulder line in polished aluminium visually separates the exterior and interior from each other. Overall in its styling and in the look and feel of its materials, it reflects classic Italian body construction and hand-shaped metal sheeting give the Mini Superleggera Vision a unique emotional appeal.

The robust Lexus NX 300h Lexus takes its advanced vehicle safety technology to another level with the new NX 300h, which will be its first UK model to be fitted as standard with radar-controlled systems to help prevent an accident happening. All versions of the NX 300h, Lexus’s first compact crossover, will be equipped with a Pre-Crash Safety system and Adaptive Cruise Control as part of a comprehensive array of active, passive and preventive safety features. Together these demonstrate the priority Lexus has given to securing the best protection for everyone on board. Pre-Crash Safety system The Pre-Crash Safety system uses a millimetre-wave radar sensor in the front grille to detect vehicles and other obstacles on the road ahead. If there is a high risk of a collision, PCS will alert the driver with a buzzer and visual warning, activate the Pre-Crash Seatbelt pretensioners, and, when the driver begins to brake, provide Pre-Crash Brake Assist to supplement the
braking effort. If the driver does not brake and a collision becomes inevitable, the Pre-Crash Brake will automatically apply the brakes to reduce impact speed and lessen the consequences of the impact. All-speed Adaptive Cruise Control The NX 300h’s Adaptive Cruise Control uses the same frontmounted millimetre-wave radar sensor as the Pre-Crash Safety system and steering sensors to recognise a vehicle ahead and maintain a safe distance. The latest development of Lexus’s technology works at all speeds, even down to standstill. Once on the move again, the system will automatically accelerate back to the pre-selected speed. Active safety The active safety package includes Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Lane Keep Assist with steering control sounds a warning buzzer if it judges that the vehicle is about cross lane markings without using the
turn indicators. Appropriate steering assistance is initiated to help avoid moving out of lane. The Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert use millimetrewave radars on each side of the NX that detect vehicles moving in the driver’s blind spot, or approaching from either side when the car is being reversed out of a parking space. Both systems warn the driver of nearby vehicles by triggering lights in the door mirror on the appropriate side of the car. The NX 300h is equipped with daytime running lights, a rear-view camera and front and rear fog lamps, as well as numerous electronic safety and handling systems. These include and emergency brake signal, Vehicle Stability Control traction control, ABS with brake assist and electronic Brakeforce distribution and Hill-start Assist Control. Automatic high beam The automatic high beam function (standard on the NX 300h F Sport and Premier) uses a
windscreen-mounted camera to detect both on-coming traffic and vehicles ahead. It automatically switches the LED headlamps to high beam when the road ahead is clear, and to low beam to prevent other road uses being dazzled. Passive safety In line with Lexus’s stringent carto-car impact compatibility standards, the NX 300h has been created with the aim of achieving class-leading performance. Front and side impact protection measures include the use of high tensile strength sheet steel (up to 980Mpa) in key areas, including the centre pillar hinge reinforcement, outer rockers and roof crossmembers. In a collision, side impact load is direct to the floor through cross-members built into the rockers beneath the centre pillars. The roof impact resistance structure disperses load when the roof is crushed, minimising cabin distortion. It includes front pillar reinforcement and high-strength steel reinforcements in the centre
pillars, and reinforcement around the seatbelt anchors. In the cabin there are energyabsorbing structures in the pillars and headlining and impactabsorbing pads in the front and rear door trims, alongside the occupants’ lumbar region. All models are fitted with Whiplash Injury-Lessening front seats. Airbags All versions of the NX 300h come with eight airbags, including a dualstage driver’s airbag, dual-stage and dual-chamber front passenger airbag, driver’s knee airbag, front passenger cushion airbag, front side airbags and full-length curtain airbags. Pedestrian Protection Pedestrian protection provisions include an energy-absorbing structure for the bonnet and wing mounting bracket and an impactabsorbing structure for the cowl. Energy-absorbing material is used in the front of the bumper and beneath the radiator support, to reduce the risk of leg injuries.

Car tax disc to be abolished in UK’s biggest motoring shake up
After almost 94 years, the paper car tax disc is being phased out from 1st October this year. After that date, a paper disc will no longer have to be displayed in a vehicle, but car owners will still need to pay the duty as normal. Licence plate recognition cameras will now detect those cars that do not have up to date tax. Most on-road enforcement action is now based on using Automatic Number Plate Readers. These cameras use the number plate rather than a visual inspection of the tax disc. The police also have access to DVLA records via the police national computer. There are significant savings for fleet operators and other businesses from not having to handle the administration of tax discs.

Cars that stop themselves could save as many lives as the introduction of seatbelts. When seatbelts became compulsory for front-seat occupants in 1983, the number of motorists killed or seriously injured fell by almost 50% overnight.
Now the latest safety technology could reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on UK roads by 17,000 in 10 years says a new report. The Thatcham motor insurance research centre investigated the potential impact of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and
found that thousands of accidents could be prevented or the effect lessened if all cars were fitted with the technology from 2015. AEB uses a combination of laser and radar to detect an imminent collision with an obstacle in front of the car and then automatically

applies the brakes. If the driver fails to respond, the system will bring the car to a complete halt. Deaths or serious injuries could fall by 17,000 by 2025 and could also cut whiplash claims, which currently total 550,000 per year and cost the UK insurance industry a total of £2
billion, pushing premiums up in the process. AEB is being considered as the most important safety innovation in more than 30 years. This type of active safety aims, primarily, to avoid the crash in the first place, rather than minimise the after-effects.
Manufacturers currently fit these AEB systems as optional or standard on selected models in their range

Keep on ‘JOGIN’ No stopping Joginder as he closes in on 300-race mark A marathon runner from Bradford says he has no plans to stop doing what he loves after completing his 287th run last weekend. 63-year-old Joginder Singh, from East Bowling, finished the Fleetwood halfmarathon on Sunday in a time of one hour 45 minutes. Despite his age, the marathon man shows no signs of slowing down, with plans to complete 26-mile challenges in India next month, before heading to the US for his eighth New York Marathon later in the year. The vice-president of Bradford’s Guru Nanak Sikh Temple, has completed 32 races since he last took part in the world-renowned marathon and says he is looking forward to returning to the States. Of course between the races, he will also squeeze in runs closer to home as he edges nearer to the 300 milestone mark. Speaking after his latest run he said: “I still feel strong and do plenty of training. “Many runs have gone and there are many more to come. I won’t stop at 300, just keep going.” When asked about his age, and whether the runs were starting to get harder, he added: “It’s still easy.” Joginder has completed runs all around the world with double marathons taking place everywhere from Kent to Asia. In total, he has covered more than 3,500 miles over the past 20 years with a mixture of 10k challenges, halfmarathons, marathons and double-marathons completed. He has raised thousands of pounds for charities and become a local legend for his epic collection of medals.
RUNNER: Joginder Singh has completed almost 300 marathons to date, with his latest venture seeing him complete Fleetwood’s 13 mile challenge

THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA Giant boxer Taishan Dong By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
Taishan Dong a heavy weight boxer from Beijing, China weighs in at 283lbs and measures more than 7ft in height with a massive 84inch in reach. Dong made his boxing debut on 18th July 2014 and won via a single punch in the early round against an opponent who previously had two impressive wins on his record. Dong made a good start to his boxing career and several people have taken note of his knockout boxing power with various boxing experts already commenting “Taishan Dong will knockout most heavyweight boxers by his sheer presence in the ring”. Dong who previously did Martial Arts and came across boxing by accident after he went to speak to a boxing trainer (who is also a legal adviser) about his legal issues and the trainer then introduced him to the sport of boxing. As a boxing fan and coach I personally keep on asking myself questions when I see the likes of Dong and that is whether Dong is just another freak show that people come to watch out of interest because of his sheer size or will they really come to watch him for his boxing ability and skill? As a child I remember watching freaky but talented British wrestlers on Sunday morning television like "Big Daddy" and I remember watching the show not because I had any interest in wrestling but, because the wrestlers were entertaining and odd looking and it was basically a talented and very enjoyable freak show. Dong’s boxing debut could be categorised as a freak show and as a student of the sport I have also noticed that he is big, slow, lacks coordination or foot work but I still believe that Dong will soon become a major boxing contender amongst the elite heavyweights because he is definitely, naturally and understandably powerful. The other question for me is whether Dong is good for boxing as a sport or would the likes of such big men be better equipped to be basketball players, wrestlers or actors in a horror movie and is this what is needed to generate more interest in boxing from a member of public point of view? I do however personally feel that the likes of Dong are good for boxing and even though he will never win a boxing bout in my opinion against the more talented boxers of this world like current undisputed heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and upcoming boxing contenders like Anthony Joshua, Wilder or Tyson Fury he will generate something that is much needed in the sport of boxing and that is entertainment, entertainment and entertainment. We wish Taishan Dong the best of luck in his chosen career and look forward to his next boxing bout.

STABBED! Knife attack leaves BrookKhan showdown in the dark
Just three weeks ago, Sheffield boxer Kell Brook was on top of the world having just clinched his first World Championship. Yet this past week, with the triumph still fresh in the minds of boxing fans around the world, the 28-year-old’s career high moment suddenly took a turn for the worst as he was stabbed in the leg whilst on holiday. Brook had been holidaying in Tenerife with his pregnant wife when the attack happened at an apartment complex in the morning of Thursday 4th September, around 8am. A police spokesperson confirmed that there was ‘a lot of blood’ at the scene and the welterweight competitor was taken to a hospital in the island's capital Santa Cruz. “This morning a 28-year-old British man was stabbed at Golf del Sur in San Miguel de Abona,” the spokeswoman said. “He was stabbed in the left leg and is hospitalised. He lost a lot of blood. There are no arrests at this time and the Guardia Civil are investigating.” Brook had only recently won the IBF World Welterweight Championship and was already being tipped by many in the
industry to fight Amir Khan at Wembley for his next challenge. As he currently recovers in hospital, it will take time to reveal how serious the injuries are to his leg and what it would mean for any prospective Wembley showdown. Eddie Hearn, Brook’s sports promoter told The Daily Mail on Thursday: “I will be flying out tonight to see what is going on. “We are all worried about what has happened. There are a lot of stories out there so let's just wait and see. I am told he is stable.” It is not the first time that the Yorkshire boxer has been stabbed after sustaining injuries to his side and buttocks in an attack at his home in 2007. This latest incident also follows the assault of fellow boxer, Jamie Moore, who was shot in both legs four weeks ago whilst training in Marbella.
CHAMP: Last month, Kell Brook defeated Shawn Porter in America to clinch the IBF Welterweight Championship, taking his unbeaten career record to 33 fights
BRONZE: After picking up Bronze in the Youth Olympics and Silver in the World Championships, Ali now hopes to clinch Gold at the European Championships later this year. (images courtesy of Sam Young)
Youth Olympian Back page story continued Coming into the tournament without sparring for four weeks due to suffering a cut above his eye, Ali added that he was less prepared than he would have liked to have been this year. His tournament began with a preliminary bout against Azerbaijan’s representative, Masud Yusifzada, who he defeated on points after three rounds. It was Yusifzada who started the liveliest of the pair, taking the first round with a powerful display against the Englishman. Yet as the fight went on, Ali regained his composure, shaking off his ring-rust acquired over the past month, and qualified after taking the next two rounds. A well-known opponent, in the shape
Keighley boxer’s knockout performance of World Champion, Shakur Stevenson, was next up for Ali and despite his best efforts, the American proved too tough on the day. Stevenson, who also defeated Ali in the World Championships earlier this year, went on to win every round on his way to Gold yet Ali believes his fight would have been much tighter, had he been fully fit. “I did push him all the way and he did come over to me at the end to tell me I was his toughest opponent,” Ali said. “It would have definitely been closer had I been able to continue my work in
the ring beforehand but I am still really happy to have won Bronze.” It was Indian boxer, Gaurav Solanki, who the local fighter defeated in the third place match-up, winning all three rounds. Ali’s success in China sees him add the Bronze medal to his Silver picked up in the World Championships earlier this year. Up next is the European’s, and with the determined teen going into the competition as favourite, he says there is only one medal he is aiming for this time - Gold.

HISTORY: Two years ago Sergio Perez finished second in Italy and says the track has special memories for him
Italian Grand Prix ready to feel the FORCE
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
After clinching a double point’s finish in the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa last month, the Force India team say they are determined to build on that performance in Italy this weekend. Sergio Perez, who is seemingly edging closer and closer towards a new contract every day, came home in his third best position of the campaign, in eighth spot, followed closely by teammate Nico Hulkenberg. Despite a minor bump in the season recently, the pair looked more composed in their latest outing and are both confident

ahead of Monza. Perez said he has fond memories of the course and looked forward to returning. He said: “It’s another favourite of mine. I think everybody enjoys going there because it’s such a beautiful location. “I raced there a few times before Formula One and always had good results. I was on the podium two years ago [finishing second] – it was one of my best races in Formula One and a very special memory.” The 24-year-old’s German teammate had started his life as a Force India driver in blistering fashion, claiming points in his first 10 races. However, just one point from
the last two grand prix has seen him slip in the driver’s standings to seventh spot, something he is determined to rectify as soon as possible. Hulkenberg added: “It was a mixed weekend [at Spa]. “We had good pace, but we couldn't achieve the maximum because of the mistakes in qualifying. “The race was interesting; we made up a lot of positions, but we also lost some time battling our way through the traffic. In the end, we got one point and that's better than nothing.” Last year Hulkenberg finished fifth on the track in Italy and will be hoping for a repeat performance this Sunday.
SUCCESS: Zeeshan picked up two bronze medals in his latest contest in Manchester last weekend and hopes to continue competing in the sport professionally
He may have only started kickboxing 14 months ago, yet a young competitor from Bradford is already beginning to gain quite the medal collection. Eight-year-old Zeeshan Ramzan’s latest challenge saw him travel to Manchester last weekend to compete in the FSK Grand Championships. Competing in the under 25kg category, for youths aged between eight and 13, the young fighter picked up two bronze medals in the light contact and points competitions. As one of the youngest competitors in attendance, Zeeshan’s achievements were all the more impressive as he continued on his quest in the sport. His father, Mohammed Ramzan, says it was a tough tournament and was delighted to see his son achieve ‘what he deserves’. “Every time he steps out on that mat, win or lose, I am so proud of him,” he said. “It takes a lot of courage just to do that. “Last weekend, he deserved to come away with a medal so to see him clinch the two bronzes was a great achievement. “He just keeps getting better and I never thought he would be so good at this so fast. I will continue to support him in whatever way I can as long as he is enjoying himself.”

Youth Olympian Keighley boxer’s knockout performance
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A pre-tournament cut above the eye was not enough to stop a local boxer from clinching his latest accolade last week as Muhammad Ali walked away with a bronze medal at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympics. The 18-year-old, from Keighley, was competing in the prestigious competition for the first time after qualifying for the flyweight category. Representing Team GB, Ali overcame opponents from Azerbaijan and India in what he described as the ‘biggest competition’ he has fought in. “It was a great experience and one which I will never forget,” he said. “To come away with a Bronze medal was great because of how big the actual competition was. “Everyone has been saying it is the right way to go before hopefully getting a shot at the senior Olympics and I would love to compete there.”
