A Bradford secondary school has come under criticisim after the Head Teacher “warned” his students that they risk being arrested if they partook in a demonstration, which took place after school hours, about a staff member’s suspension. Mr Asif Khan, a longstanding mentor for Carlton Bolling College (CBC) students received a letter during the school summer holidays informing that he was suspended due to gross misconduct. Though Mr Khan has been ordered to not disclose the details of the disciplinary action being taken against him, it’s been speculated that his suspension and investigation is due to his proPalestinian support on his social media networking platforms. Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Undercliffe school on Wednesday 10th September, for a second rally organised to raise their objection on Mr Khan facing disciplinary action by the school. The demonstration, which included uniformed students and some adults, went along peacefully, with many praising the students for maintaining order. Police had flocked the area to oversee the rally. The school will now be questioned as to why Mr Khan’s job was advertised prior to their investigation or first meeting with Mr Khan,

I feel that students of CBC have just displaying their views in a manner which they thought would be the most effective in getting the maximum attention of the governing body of the establishment. Five Muslim Labour councillors, including three front-benchers, left reeling by dramatic party shake-up

A dramatic shake-up of Labour party councillors, including a former Lord Mayor, has sent shockwaves across Bradford. The Labour party regional office informed the councillors, three of them who sit on the front-bench at Bradford council, that the party does not want them to defend their seats in next year’s local elections. The three councillors who have been confirmed to be “deselected” via email, are Cllr Ghazanfer Khaliq (Bradford Moor) - also a former Lord Mayor, Cllr Amir Hussain (Toller) – who sits on the Council's powerful executive and Cllr Rizwan Malik (Heaton). Sources speculate that the Labour party is trying to teach Bradford “a lesson” after the upset caused by George Galloway’s victory in 2012 by-election. Speaking to the Asian Express, Cllr Ghazanfer Khaliq said: “I was informed via email of the party’s decision to drop me. “After serving the party for 30-odd-years and winning my seat for seven consecutive elections, the one-liner email seemed a bit harsh. “I have had a good run. During my time as Lord Mayor for the city, I thoroughly enjoyed working to help many local charities and initiatives in the process. “However, it’s still a shock for me to be ousted this way.” All three councillors are seemingly being pulled up on old matters, which had previously been “put-to-bed” following rigorous investigations conducted by the Labour party.

Cllr Ghazanfer Khaliq has been pulled up on his 2011 drink driving offence, where Cllr Amir Hussain on a 20-year-old photograph which surfaced in 2012 and seemed to show him holding a rocket-propelled grenade launcher. Cllr Riz Malik, who has a significant social media following and is considered a stalwart for raising awareness and funds for deprived orphans across the globe, it seems, is facing a case of “double jeopardy”. He had previously been scrupulously examined and re-examined over an incident in 2010 involving his family’s property business in which it received a fine. As a result, he resigned from chairing Bradford Council's housing and non-domestic rates appeal panel, but stayed on as a councillor. Unconfirmed reports indicate that three more Labour councillors would also be removed from next year’s runnings. These were Cllr Kaneez Akthar (Keighley Central), Cllr Asama Javed (Manningham) and Councillor Doreen Lee (Keighley East). A Yorkshire and Humber Labour Party spokesperson said: “The ongoing selection process for council candidates in Bradford is an internal Party matter and it would not be appropriate for us to provide a running commentary on it at this early stage.” Council and Labour group leader, Councillor David Green, declined to comment saying that it was a matter for the regional office.

The Minister originally met Mr Karim earlier this year, when they got together to discuss the idea of promoting Malaysian food. He was blown away by the World Curry Festival concept, and flew back to the UK this week to do the deal. Bradford has been the UK curry capital for four-years running and therefore is befitting that the festival, which operates out of the heart of the city, from the Grade II

Bradford-based founder of the World Curry Festival announces first destination for the event outside the UK listed Drummond Mills complex, will be taking British curry to Malaysia. The festival will be hosted in the state of Penang, on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. When Hanaike Rehal left Oakwood Sixth Form at the end of the 2013 academic year, the options for his future remained wide open. University, a career, or maybe an apprenticeship could have been on the cards for the now 19year-old yet instead there was only one thing that piqued his interest; a volunteer opportunity. Hanaike, from Oakwood, Leeds, had always had the ambition to volunteer abroad and took up the opportunity earlier this year with a ‘life-changing’ trip to Tanzania. For ten weeks, the teen volunteered for the Raleigh charity as part of the International Citizen Service (ISC) programme, developed for young people aged between 18 and 25. Working in the rural village of Myarmyar in the east African country, the teenager’s main focus was to help improve sustainable development in the area. Having never been away from home for such a long period, Hanaike says it was a big decision to undertake the project but he was extremely happy to have done it. “After sixth form, I decided to take a gap year and had always wanted to do some volunteering,” he said. “It was actually one of my cousins who told me about this project and I applied and was fortunate enough to get a place. “A lot of our work revolved around educating local people about sanitation and showing

them clean, safe ways of handling water. “By the time we had left, we had even completed five educational murals which showed the lessons we had taught during our time there.” Hanaike now wants to promote the project closer to home in the hope of getting more volunteers on board with the charity. For the full ten weeks, each person who joins the project is only required to raise £800 prior to the trip, with the rest of the costs covered by the ICS which is majority funded by the Department for International Development (DFID). As well as helping developing countries, new skills and independence is acquired something Hanaike says is one of the hidden benefits. “It is a great experience and one which I would love to do again,” he said. “Spending time in countries like

this really help you to appreciate the things that you do have here at home and since I have come back, I have tried not to fall back into the same old habits. “To people who want to volunteer, I would just say don’t hesitate and don’t be worried. Landmark dementia study at Bradford Royal Infirmary seeks local people to help with research

The leaders of a £2million landmark study, which aims to improve the care of dementia patients while they recuperate in hospital from a fractured hip, are looking for Bradford people to help them with their research. Bradford Teaching Hospitals is one of only three sites across the UK currently enlisted in the PERFECTED (Perioperative Enhanced Recovery hip FracturE Care of paTiEnts with Dementia) study which will examine the way hospitals care for and rehabilitate patients after they undergo surgery for a fractured hip. This five-year programme will investigate how better standards of care can be implemented across the NHS to improve the outcomes of hospital admission for people with dementia. Currently, one quarter of acute NHS hospital beds are occupied by people with dementia and rehabilitation is difficult due to acute confusion “delirium” and other complications. Many return home in worse health than when they were admitted. Now the research programme is looking for local people, who have been touched by dementia, to act as lay researchers and advisory members on its study. Isla Dowds, Patient and Public Involvement Facilitator at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: ‘The main reason for involving local people in this way is so that their expertise - gained through their personal experience - can shape the research programme. “They can make sure that it reflects how a person affected by dementia might think or feel about it. “This type of insight is vital in helping researchers understand people’s needs related to having dementia, and to make sure these are taken into account in designing and carrying out the research. That is a powerful contribution to make to the vital work of improving care for people with dementia.” Lay researchers will help the programme to assist in the collection and analysis of interviews. Some training will be given and expenses will be paid. The programme is being led by the University of East Anglia’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences following a grant from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). Carers or people living with dementia are also being sought for the advisory group, which will meet two to four times a year. Researchers are hoping that people will commit to helping their study for at least two years. Dr Simon Hammond, Programme Manager and Research Fellow for the PERFECTED study, added: “This is an exciting opportunity for people to bring their knowledge of what it is like living with dementia and marry that with the expertise of the researchers working on the programme. “We need people who will be willing to contribute to discussions and making decisions, and help us produce research that can be understood and put to practical use.” The programme involves a UK and international team of researchers with the Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia UK as partners. A key international collaborator is Prof Malaz Boustani – a US expert in implementation science and aging brain care at Indiana University’s School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute, who is also president of the American Delirium Society. The study is hosted by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where initial research will take place. Up to 10 hospitals will take part in the research. After the programme has ended, it is hoped that the guidelines will be rolled out under a four-year trial across the NHS.

Statistics handed to the Asian Express this past week have revealed that anti-Semitic crimes in the UK reached a record level in July 2014, with a large proportion of the crimes committed by people from the South Asian community. Figures released by the Community Security Trust (CST) show a shocking 400 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, as which there were 302 separate incidents. This figure is also just two fewer than the first six months of 2014 in which 304 incidents were reported. CST officials have drawn a direct correlation between attacks on Britain’s Jewish population and the events in Hamas and Israel - of the 302 crimes, 155 had direct reference to the ongoing conflict which began in July. CST obtained a description of the offender for 107 of the total incidents recorded. Of these, 55 offenders, 51 per cent, were described as being of south Asian

appearance; 32 offenders, 31 per cent, were described as white; 15, 14 per cent, were described as being of Arab or north African appearance; and five, five per cent, were described as black. Representing just over seven per

cent of the country’s full population, the statistics show a worrying over-representation for south Asians. CST spokesman Mark Gardner said the statistics ‘speak for themselves’ and that his

50,000 children set to benefit in child maintenance shake-up

Single and separated parents who have previously received no maintenance from their former partner could start receiving payments for the first time, as reform of the child maintenance system starts to affect existing cases. As many as 50,000 children may be newly eligible for maintenance, the Government has estimated, as a three-year process of closing all existing Child Support Agency cases gets under way. Under sweeping reforms of the child maintenance system, the CSA has already stopped taking on new cases, with newlyseparated parents encouraged to make their own family-based arrangements or use the new Child Maintenance

Service instead. Now, in the next phase of the changes, the agency is beginning the process of closing its 800,000-strong historic caseload. Initially, the DWP is writing to around 150,000 parents with details of when their case is due to close and advice about the next steps they should take. Although there is no need for anyone to act until they receive a letter, once parents receive notification of their closure date they are urged to consider their options. The case closure programme is beginning with so-called “nilassessed” cases – those in which, because of the circumstances of the nonresident parent, no maintenance has been due. Because of this, some parents may feel there is no point in responding to the letter they receive. But because the parents’ circumstances may have

changed since the initial assessment was made – plus the new statutory child maintenance system is much more robust, using data from the tax authorities – it may be that maintenance becomes payable once a new assessment is carried out. Therefore, all parents are encouraged to act. Parents whose CSA cases are closed are encouraged instead to make their own family-based arrangements – with £14m ploughed into projects around the country that help parents work together in the interests of their children. If that’s not possible, they can take advantage of support available from the new Child Maintenance Service. It has been a big week for Bradford’s £275m Westfield Broadway shopping development with action both on and off the site. Visually, passer-bys will have seen cladding start to appear on the exterior of the site as the giant metal structure was completed last month, with 6,800 tonnes of steel used to construct the shape. On completion, the site will total 570,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, with 1,300 new car parking spaces. In addition to Debenhams, M&S and Next, more than 70 shops, restaurants and cafes will bring together a dynamic mix of high street fashion, food and lifestyle brands. A Westfield spokesperson said it is exciting times to be involved with the project and the public could expect to see more progress in the near future. The spokesperson said: “We’ve been really pleased about the progress that has been made on The Broadway since construction began in January 2014.

Meet the brothers bringing Sufi music to Bradford

A family in Bradford is certainly making quite the noise on the music scene as three brothers show they have what it takes to perform at the highest level. 18-year-old Salamet Husayn Iqbal, along with his younger siblings, Hassan, 17, and Sulayman, 15, have been playing instruments for more than ten years gaining a reputation as the street’s noisy neighbours with an array of talents on show. The brothers, all from West Bowling, can play the flute, violin, clarinet, piano, harmonium, and percussion instruments to extremely high standards, often mastering the talent through their own intuition. Most recently, the trio had the opportunity to play on stage with the world renowned, Mahmood Sabri, of the Sabri Brothers, when they attended the annual Sufi Soul Festival, in Kall, Germany. Mahmood Sabri is the last remaining brother of the famous group who helped ‘put Pakistani music on the map’ with his Sufi qawwali genre in the 70’s and 80’s. At the event, the boys were shocked to be asked to play alongside the legendary performer, and for their father, Javed Iqbal, it was a great moment. “I am extremely proud of them when I see them play,” he said. “It is like I am living my dream through them. “20 years ago I couldn’t have even imagined being in the same room as any of the Sabri Brothers let alone see my sons play on the same stage as him. “It was really special. We were told before the performance that the boys might get around five or ten minutes at the end. “Then at the beginning of his act, Mahmood Sabri turned around to ‘Ustaad Sulamat’ and told him to play. “It was totally unrehearsed but really well received from all the audience and acts.”

Following the performance, Mahmood Sabri telephoned the family directly to compliment the talents of the three teenagers, especially Salamet, who had played a musical piece dating back more than 50 years. Labelling the teen an Ustaad, meaning teacher, he spoke of his gratitude of being able to hear a song from his earlier days which had helped him fall back in love with music. For the former Dixon’s City Academy pupil, it was a humbling experience. “It was a great privilege,” he said. “I have been playing the clarinet for 13 or 14 years now and to finally play with a master such as Mahmood Sabri was a really big thing. “To get such a compliment from such a master is not common, and for him to be so impressed with what I did was very enriching.” With Salamet just completing his A-Levels he now hopes to

pursue his musical career further yet needs extra support to fulfil his ambitions. Now, at the age of 19, Ambreen Sadiq’s powerful story is portrayed, alongside those of fellow young Muslim women who have taken up a passion for the sport, in the critically acclaimed production – ‘No Guts, No Heart, No Glory’. Ambreen, who became a national champion at just 16 years of age, has taken up a coaching role, whilst fellow Bradford-born boxer and former British University champion, Saira Tabasum, stars as herself. Ambreen explained what people can expect from the inspiring production which relates closely to her own personal experiences. She said: “I feel that it’s based on my story. An Asian girl or woman boxing is a huge thing in our culture especially when you are Pakistani and a Muslim, it’s

seen as not very ladylike. “I want to get the point across that boxing is not just for boys. I want to inspire girls from all backgrounds to do what they dream of doing whether that’s boxing or not.” Director and Producer, Evie Manning, added: “We started interviewing Muslim female boxers and were struck by their determination and passion for the sport, at how they had said ‘I will be who I want to be and do what I want to do’ and we thought this was a powerful message that spoke to all young women and young men,” she said. “We see No Guts, No Heart, No Glory as...an opportunity for us to make something positive and create an atmosphere of a club, with loud music and strong female characters.” No Guts, No Heart, No Glory returns to Bradford this week with a first performance set to take place on Thursday 11th September at Huggy’s Gym, Manchester Road.

A suspected terrorist from West Yorkshire, described as convicted radical cleric, Abu Hamza al Masri’s most favoured ‘lieutenant’, is set to be extradited. Haroon Aswat, from Batley, had seen his extradition from the UK put on hold earlier this year after judges wanted assurances about the way he would be treated by the US government. Yet now, following a high court hearing in London on Thursday 4th September, home secretary Theresa May has been given the go-ahead to extradite the mentally ill, Broadmoor patient. Aswat has been wanted by US officials in connection with plans to set up a jihadi training camp alongside Abu Hamza in Bly, Oregon. Speaking after the hearing, a Home office spokesman said: “We are pleased the court has upheld the Home Secretary's decision to extradite Haroon Aswat to the United States. “The court agreed that the American authorities had provided sufficient assurances over the conditions in which Aswat would be held in the U.S. “Aswat's legal team has been given an opportunity to seek leave to appeal to the

Supreme Court. Subject to any application, arrangements will now be made for his extradition.” Aswat, who is believed to be in his late 30’s, was initially detained in 2005 in Zambia and deported back to the UK after a request from the US for his extradition. In 2008, he was transferred to Broadmoor’s high security psychiatric hospital where he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and has been receiving treatment ever since. Aswat's lawyers have persistently argued that should he be forced to leave for the US, the accused might be held in a ‘supermax’ American jail which would hamper his health, something the European Court demanded to be addressed. They said they wanted assurances that he would be held in a psychiatric referral centre pending examination by doctors. Welcoming Thursday's decision, Britain's interior ministry said the court clearly agreed that American authorities had provided sufficient assurances over the conditions in which Aswat would be held. Arrangements for his extradition are now being made by US authorities.

I remember it well, it was at the Midland Hotel with many eminent speakers, unfortunately I don’t remember the name of one particular speaker who, although I did not realise at the time, had left a lasting impact on my thinking. What I do remember is that he spoke with great eloquence, passion and engagement. It was during the early ninties, a period in which Mikhail Gorbachov had introduced Glasnost, the opening up and Peristroika, the restructuring of, the Soviet Union. The ‘Good Guy’ created the ‘Bad Guy’? between the Soviet Union and the United States, and what was known as the Cold War, was coming to an end and it seemed that the world was coming towards a peaceful time. This is where the words of the aforementioned speakers had such prophetic meaning. He spoke about how the effect of Glasnost would have in shaping todays’ world. To paraphrase what he basically said, was, that since the Iron Curtain had fallen and the USA and USSR are no longer hostile to each other, there is a void in the equation. How will the US and the West maintain its supremacy over the world when it doesn’t have an enemy to fight , to show the world that they

are still the Good Guys and saviours of all the bad in the world? He spoke how the West needed an enemy to fight so that they could act as the police state, combating anything that threatened the equilibrium of the peace in the world; this he said would come about by the creation of a new enemy and that new enemy would be Islam. Islamic Militants and Islamic Fundamentalism have always existed but no-one ever really knew or cared about what was going on. Gradually from the late ninties up until now, Islamic terrorism and Fundamentalism are always a breath away from the news, always portrayed as the enemy of all

enemies. The question that needs to be asked is, why was the religion of Islam never a problem before, especially during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980’s. At that time the US supported the Mujahiddins who were fighting against the Russians, and once the Russians had been defeated, those same Muhjahiddins became militants and terrorists.The question that needs to be asked is “Is the real issue, how we define those people who choose to stand up for their rights?” The sceptic in me wonders whether this Islamophobia and the related terrorism issues have been manufactured and engineered by the West to create a “Bad Guy” so that

they can keep their “Good Guy” image and the power that is inevitably attached to such status. The aftermath of 9/11 and the subsequent US involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown that the Americans will do whatever they want and then justify it the way they want to as well. The emerging and continuing conflict in the Ukraine and the alleged blatant aggression of the Russians could signal the start of a shift of attention away from Islam and the Middle East, to the reempowered Russia with Putin at its helm. Will the emergence of this new enemy have an impact on the existing enemy of the religion of Islam, the Pandoras’ Box the West probably wishes they had never opened. The name of that speaker still eludes me today!

Police officers from the Specialist Operations Department are swapping their high performance vehicles for a set of borrowed bike wheels as part of the latest plans to tackle burglary. From this past week, officers in plain clothes will be patrolling suburban areas in Leeds, Bradford and other parts of West Yorkshire, as part of the latest covert tactic to further reduce domestic burglary. Under the plans, teams of officers will use bikes that have previously been recovered by police as suspected stolen property, and have until this point remained unused in police stores, as officers have been unable to trace their rightful owners. The activity forms part of West Yorkshire Police's Viper initiative, which aims to target the county's most prolific burglars by using crime profiling, intelligence systems and innovative tactics, to ensure officers are in the right places at the right times.

Volunteers for a project to help communities enforce anti-dog fouling measures are being sought in Garforth. The ‘dog watch’ volunteers will be given training and tools to help them report fouling, so that the council can then enforce anti-fouling measures more effectively. Initially being done in the Garforth area, the council hope the pilot can give teeth to enforcement of measures throughout the rest of the city. Volunteers will receive training on the law and how to record information to help with enforcement, as well as support from Leeds City Council to arrange action days and patrols.

Ashya King: Cancer victim reunited with parents after their release from jail The parents of young brain tumour patient Ashya King were reunited with the five-year-old earlier this week after their ordeal at the hands of British authorities and Spanish police finally came to an end. Brett King said he and wife Naghmah had been ‘treated like terrorists’ in the days since they took their son from hospital in Southampton following a dispute over his care. The couple were yesterday transported the 330 miles from where they had been held in prison near Madrid to Malaga, where Ashya had spent four days under armed guard in a children’s hospital. After visiting his stricken son and leaving his wife to keep vigil overnight, Mr King spoke of the couple’s first moments back in

As the debate about immigration and integration rages on in the UK, one young British-Pakistani Muslim woman will provide a unique insight into the challenges faced by the immigrants themselves in an alien land. ‘Burq-Off!’ is a hilarious new onewoman show by writer and stand-up comic Nadia Manzoor, who has dared to explore the classic migrant's' conflict between the need to better integrate and the religious and cultural demands of their own communities. After a series of sold-out performances in the United States, the show arrives in Nadia's hometown of London from 9th September, running until 14th September. Written, produced and performed by 31year-old Nadia, 'Burq-Off!' is an auto-biographical 'variety' show in which Nadia draws on her own life experiences to play 21 different characters - from her domineering Pakistan-born father and

radicalised twin brother, through her saucy school friend and overbearing aunts, to the Islamic studies teacher with a sideline in pornography. The show explores the myriad conflicts of identity, sexuality and culture Nadia had to contend with growing up in a conservative Pakistani family in 90's England, and provides a rare woman's perspective into the eternal quest to belong to two wildly opposing cultures. 'Burq-Off!' was one of the biggest selling Off Broadway shows of 2013 and, following a sell-out run in San Francisco, is coming to Nadia's hometown for a special week-long run at the Cockpit Theatre in Central London. A mobile kitchen in Leeds is celebrating its latest milestone achievement after serving up its 1,000th meal last month. The InTouch Foundation’s Leeds site passed the landmark despite only launching earlier this year in May. Providing warm meals to those most vulnerable in society, from the homeless to individuals suffering financial difficulties in their lives, the project has proved a huge success, following on from sites in Bradford and Keighley. On average, 100 meals are handed out every Tuesday on the Headrow by a team of volunteers, with around 60 people being served food and drink. This number is expected to double over the next three months as word of mouth spreads and for Leeds co-ordinator, Shabbir Merali, it shows, how important these kinds of projects are for the city. “It’s imperative to have this here,” he said. “It’s not just homeless people coming down but those who are experiencing difficulties, with some not even eating for days. “We are not surprised to have hit the milestone so soon due to the success already seen in Bradford and Keighley and we only expect the figures to increase.” He added: “A big thank you goes out to our team of incredible volunteers and also Leeds Council who have been very supportive of the project since day one.”

Akif Ali, aged 24, of Cumberland Road, Lidget Green was sentenced at Bradford Crown Court on Tuesday, 2nd September after he pleaded guilty to four sexual offences in June of this year. He was also given four years extended licence and a comprehensive Sex Offender Prevention Order. Ali, who was already a registered sex offender, targeted the girl, then 15, over a period of months before he met and sexually assaulted her at a location in Bradford in February. Ali was also convicted of exposing himself to a 16-year-old Asian girl in Horton Park in the same month. Detective Inspector Vanessa Smith, of the Bradford District Safeguarding Unit, said: “I would like to thank the victims and their families for coming forward and reporting Ali's crimes to the police. “We are pleased with the sentence he has received and hope it will bring them some comfort. “West Yorkshire Police is committed to investigating all reports of sexual abuse, including online grooming, and we hope that this conviction will encourage other victims to come forward. “All reports will be investigated sensitively and thoroughly by specially trained officers, with the aim of securing a conviction against offenders.”

New parents could be putting their babies at risk without realising, according to a new campaign to highlight car baby seat safety. ‘Strap me not wrap me’ campaign is a joint initiative between Locala, which provides NHS community health services, Kirklees Council’s Highways Department and West Yorkshire Police. Community nurses at local immunisation clinics are noticing an increasing number of infants attending - an average of 10 a month - who are not correctly fastened into car seats and so are at risk of serious head or neck injuries. Anyone driving a car with a baby not strapped into their baby seat faces a penalty fine of £100 - £500. In addition, a driver with fewer seat belts than passengers (including babies) will receive three points on their licence and be stopped from onward travel.

A £50,000 ring was stolen from a Leeds jeweller last week and police are appealing for any information which could lead to the return of the valuable object. CCTV images have been released of two people who are wanted for questioning after the ring was taken from a shop in the Victoria Quarter on Monday 25th August. The man and woman went into the store and asked staff to show them various items from around the shop. While staff were distracted they then proceeded to steal a diamond ring worth more than £50,000 from a display board and left the store. The man was described as Asian, aged in his late thirties to forties, medium build, with short dark hair, whilst the woman was of similar age, about 5ft 2ins tall, and wearing a black headscarf. A notable feature police are stressing is that both of the pair had gold teeth at the

front of their mouths, which they hope will bring the two suspected thieves to justice. PCSO James Hudson, of the City Neighbourhood Policing Team, said it was clear the couple had offended before and was now determined to catch them before similar action happens again. He said: “It is believed these two are professional criminals who travel around committing offences of this type as they are confident and appear well practiced at this type of offence. “As well as appealing for information to identify them we hope this publicity will serve as a warning to other jewellers to be aware of these offenders. We'd also like to hear from anyone who may have been offered such a ring for sale.” Anyone with any information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact PCSO 135 Hudson at Leeds Central Police Station via 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Shopping centre goes bananas Leeds’ Merrion centre is getting in the Fairtrade spirit this weekend with some special fruity friends on hand to help celebrate an important milestone. Shoppers heading down to the site on Saturday will be greeted by the city’s Fairtrade supporters who will be handing out free bananas to mark 10 years of Leeds being a Fairtrade City. Children are invited to join in with the fun activities on the day which will include young visitors having the chance to make their own banana themed hats. Chair of Fairtrade Leeds Steering Group, Hannah Langdana, said she was delighted to see the city celebrate a decade of support and looked forward to even more in the future. “We are celebrating 10 years as a Fairtrade city and wanted to involve Leeds’ citizens to join in the fun,” she said. Fairtrade means better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers, workers and their communities. Muslim community ‘targeted’ following grooming allegations As calls for justice continue to gain momentum in relation to the Rotherham sexual abuse case, a leader of a local Muslim youth group is also backing the calls yet insists the actions should not be seen as a ‘Muslim problem’. British Muslim Youth founder Muhbeen Hussain, has said the local Muslim community is united in calls for action to be taken against those involved in the scandal. More than 1,400 children are reported to have been sexually abused between 1997 and 2013 in the South Yorkshire town with many of the perpetrators of Pakistani origin. In the 2011 census, only 1.1 per cent of the population in Rotherham were from Pakistan making the statistics even more worrying for the representation. However, Mr Hussain insists the problem is a ‘criminal’ one and not a ‘Muslim’ one as he spoke emotionally at a press conference earlier this week. “We are not here to deny anything the report clearly shows a large number of those individuals were Pakistani Muslim men,” he said. “But we don't support the sentiment that it is a Pakistani or a Muslim problem.

“It is clear what these individuals did but they are not part of our community - the only community they are a part of is the criminal community. “There is nowhere in Pakistani Muslim culture that condones such actions, there is nowhere in the Islamic faith that supports these actions. “We want convictions; we want justice for the 1,400.” Since the report was released by Professor Alexis Jay, the spotlight has been shone on those in charge of protecting the youths in Rotherham throughout the 16-year period. Council leader, Roger Stone, resigned from his position upon the news whilst calls for chief crime commissioner, Shaun Wright, to resign were made by many including the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg. Stone has since been suspended by the Labour Party alongside fellow councillors, Gwendoline Russell, Shaukat Ali, and ex-deputy leader Jahangir Akhtar, pending an investigation. In 2010, attention was first drawn to Rotherham when five men were sentenced for grooming teenage girls in the area.

End to End A self-proclaimed ‘cycling novice’ took on a challenge very few keen cyclists will have even comprehended as he made his way from Lands End to John O’Groats all in the name of charity. 27-year-old Naheem Yacub, from Burley, set himself the target at the start of the year to complete a total of 2,313 miles within 12 months. Raising money for the British Red Cross and Leeds Children’s Hospital, his task has so far seen him run marathon distances on a daily basis whilst this latest epic bike ride has pushed him well and beyond the half way target. “The furthest I had been on a bike before this was around 25 miles and that was in March so you could say I was going into the challenge unprepared,” he said. “It has only now just begun to sink in that I travelled 1,010 miles in two weeks purely through leg power. “It goes to show that if you put your mind to it, you can do anything really.” Beginning his route at the southern most point of the country, Naheem joined up with a team of cyclists who were preparing to complete the journey at the same time. Through downpours of rain,

and over hilly terrain, the cyclists rode for 14 days non-stop before finally reaching their goal in the north of Scotland at the iconic John O’Groats. Setting off on the bikes everyday at around 8.30am, the group stopped only three times during each leg to have lunch and a small ‘breather’ before continuing on their route. At times, Naheem says the temptation to just stop did come over him but he was always given that bit of extra motivation to continue. “After the first day my legs were in agony and it was making it really hard to sleep because I had never done anything like this before,” he said. “The hills were just going on forever and were really taking it out of me. One thing that kept me going was these two elderly cyclists in the group who had come all the way from America to do the route. “One was 71 and the other 74, and I just thought if they have the motivation and will to do this, then so do I.” He added: “At times rain was coming down heavily and it literally felt like someone was throwing stones at you. “I just thought of the children in the hospital and those suffering

abroad, whose circumstances are much harder than mine and that really kept me going.” Eventually, after overcoming all obstacles, including a broken chain, Naheem completed his challenge. City looks to retain ‘Curry Crown’ For the past three years there has undoubtedly been only one place in the country which deserves to call itself the Curry Capital of Britain - Bradford. Britain’s most senior police officer has backed growing calls to see British extremists, who travel abroad to fight, stripped of their passports. Metropolitan Police Crime Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, said it should be seen as a ‘privilege’ to live in this country and by going to war zones as aspiring terrorists, that privilege should be removed. Currently, it is estimated that between 500 and 600 Britons are fighting in Syria, with roughly three quarters of them from the capital. Sir Bernard said earlier this month that Scotland yard is prepared should a large number of them return at the same time, and even called for the return of control orders. Such a move would see terror suspects forced to move to a different part of the country where they could then be place under a lengthy curfew as they are investigated. The control orders were replaced in Britain by less restrictive Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures, for suspects who can neither be deported nor charged. Speaking on LBC Radio, Sir Bernard said: “It seems to me it’s a privilege to have a passport and be a citizen of this country, and if you’re going to start fighting in another country on behalf of another state, or against another state, it seems to me that you’ve made a choice about where you want to be. “[The control orders] were stopped because the threat was reduced and quite properly they were seen as too intrusive.

In a previous article, we reported on the case of Prophet Plc –v- Huggett where the High Court found that due to an error in the drafting, a restrictive covenant was rendered ineffective to protect the employer and to correct that the Court added words to the covenant to make it commercially effective and enforceable. That decision was highly contentious, given that it went against the conventionally held view that the Courts generally do not interfere with or alter private contracts entered into between parties, and it was always likely that that decision would be appealed. By way of a brief summary, Prophet Plc was a software developer for the fresh produce industry. Mr Huggett was a Sales Manager for Prophet. His contract contained a 12 month non-compete clause from selling Prophet software following the termination of his employment with them. Mr Huggett joined a competitor which sold competing software but, technically, not Prophet software. Therefore, on a literal interpretation, the non-compete clause provided no protection to Prophet, as only Prophet sold Prophet software. Mr Huggett appealed the High Court decision and the Court of Appeal has now overturned that decision. The Appeal Court decided that although the Court could take an approach whereby a restriction could be re-written to reflect the intention of the parties, such approach should only be considered in circumstances where the restriction is

ambiguous. In the Prophet case however, the Court of Appeal found that the restriction was not ambiguous, it was simply badly drafted. The Court of Appeal therefore concluded that Prophet was stuck with the restriction as originally drafted. In the words of the Court: “Prophet made it’s.... bed and it must now lie upon it”. The case provides a cautionary tale that if a restrictive covenant is badly drafted then the employer may be stuck with a useless covenant. It highlights the fact that an employer cannot rely on the Court to rescue it from a badly drafted covenant but instead it must ensure that during the drafting of the covenant it considers carefully what competitive activities and eventualities it wants the employee to be prevented from engaging in following the termination of his employment. All covenants should be carefully drafted to ensure that they properly protect the employer’s interests as fully as possible. A well drafted restriction is likely to mean that it may never be breached (as it will act as an adequate deterrent) and if it is breached then it gives the employer a strong negotiating hand with which to settle a dispute with a former employee out of court. Nine hospital staff have been disciplined over the death of pregnant woman Savita Halappanavar in the Republic of Ireland on 28th October 2012. In a case where the death of Savita Halappanavar on 28 October 2012, at University Hospital Galway in Ireland, led to nationwide rallies protests, calling for a review of the abortion laws in Ireland. Hundreds attended a vigil in her memory, in the days after her death. The 31-year-old was 17 weeks' pregnant and miscarrying when she was admitted to the hospital. She had asked for a termination, but staff refused. Days later, she died as a result of septic shock from an E coli infection. A review found 21 out of 30 staff had no case to answer over her death. The Health Service Executive (HSE) said warnings, including written warnings, were issued

to some of the nine staff at University College Galway who were disciplined. Others received training and mentoring. Last October, a report on her death and related issues found there was a failure to provide the most basic elements of care in her case. The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) found there were many missed opportunities, that if acted on might have changed the outcome for her. It said there was a failure to recognise she was developing an infection and to act on her deteriorating condition. It found that University Hospital Galway did not have effective arrangements to regularly record and monitor her condition and that the management of the delivery of maternity services was not consistent with best practices.

Family plea to radicalised daughter RADICALISED: Aqsa Mahmood left her Glasgow home in November and travelled to Syria after becoming radicalised

Parents fear for 20-year-old Glasgow girl who travelled to Syria and married an Isis fighter The parents of a ‘bedroom radical’ who travelled to Syria and married an Isis fighter have pleaded for her to return home. Aqsa Mahmood, 20, left her Glasgow home in November after becoming radicalised, her family said. Muzaffar and Khalida Mahmood said they were horrified that their ‘sweet, peaceful, intelligent’ child had joined jihadists in Syria. They said in a statement: “We still love you, Aqsa, but we now have to put your family, your brother and sisters first as you have betrayed us, our community and the people of Scotland when you took this step. “You have torn the heart out of our family and changed our lives forever. Please come home.” They warned: “If our daughter, who had all the chances and freedom in life, could become a bedroom radical, then it is possible for this to happen to any family.” Privately-educated Aqsa is reported to have encouraged terrorist acts via a Twitter account under the name Umm Layth. The account has since been deleted. She travelled through Turkey to Aleppo in Syria in November and was reported missing to police. Before disappearing she attended Craigholme School then university and was ‘well integrated into society’, her parents said. They said she was brought up ‘with love and affection in a happy home’. Mrs Mahmood wiped away tears as solicitor Aamer Anwar read a statement on her and her husband's behalf at a press conference in Glasgow. They said: “She may believe that the jihadists of Isis are her new family but they are not and are simply using her.” The parents, who remained silent during the conference,

said in the statement: “Aqsa was always a very sweet, peaceful, intelligent child and inquisitive about everything. “We had high hopes for her and would have loved for her to be a doctor and to save lives. “We dreamed that one day we would see her married with children but sadly that no longer looks likely. “As parents we would have liked for her to listen to us but we gave her everything

Stripped of passports New plans have been announced this past week which will see suspected Islamist militants stripped of their passports upon return to Britain. The proposals arrive just days after the country’s terrorism alert was raised to its second-highest level by Prime Minister David Cameron, to combat the threat posed by radicalised Britons returning from Syria and Iraq. Actions of the Islamic State in recent weeks, including the beheading of US journalists by a militant believed to be British,

have also caused further worries. Cameron said this new legislation would be targeted at giving police temporary powers to seize a suspect’s passport at the border to give authorities time to investigate the individual. “We have all been shocked and sickened by the barbarism we have witnessed in Iraq this summer,” Cameron told parliament. “There are two key areas where we need to strengthen our powers to fill specific gaps in our armoury. These are around preventing

suspects from travelling and dealing decisively with those already here who pose a risk.” He continued by adding that the government would now consult further on ways to prevent Britons from returning home if they are believed to have pledged allegiance to an extremist cause. This would extend existing powers which can only be applied to foreign nationals, naturalised citizens and those with dual nationalities. Lawmakers immediately questioned the legality of some of the proposals with the government's former top lawyer, Dominic Grieve, saying he was concerned that British nationals could be prevented from returning to the country. “Not only does it offend principles of international law, it actually would offend basic principles of our own common law as well,” Grieve said. In response, Cameron said the current methods did work yet it was important to strengthen any weaknesses.

Successive YouGov polls on Scotland’s coming referendum showed the ‘no’ vote leading ‘yes’ by at least 16 points. This weeks findings show that the ‘yes’ campaign has gained 35 supporters and lost just eight. In contrast, the ‘no’ campaign has gained 13 and lost 21. The biggest movements have been among Labour and the Liberal Democrats supporters. At the same time, the minority of SNP voters intending to vote ‘no’ has shrunk. What explain these shifts? A major factor concerns

attitudes to the economy. From time to time we ask people whether they think Scotland would be better or worse off if it became independent. Just weeks ago, in late June, pessimists outnumbered optimists by 49-27%. Now the gap is far narrower: 44-35%. Again, the biggest movement has been among Labour supporters. It’s not just ‘the economy, stupid’. The ‘yes’ campaign is also boosted by widespread fears that if Scotland stays in the UK,

the NHS in Scotland would get worse. Only 9% think it would improve. On the other hand, more people think an independent Scotland would ensure the NHS improves (37%) rather than deteriorates (27%). Many people still worry about how an independent Scotland would handle issues such as the currency – but now, a great many Scots are also beginning to fear remaining part of the UK.

Cigarette-resembling inhaler licensed as medicine in UK A nicotine inhaler which closely resembles a cigarette is the first product of its kind to be licensed as a medicine in the UK. The product, called Voke, which is not electronic, could be provided on prescription to help people stop smoking. It is also the first device made by a tobacco company to be licensed. Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) says this could pave the way for electronic cigarettes to be licensed too. A number of nicotine inhalers, sprays, patches and gums are already available on prescription as aids for stopping smoking, but this is the first device designed to imitate a cigarette which has been licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority (MHRA). While e-cigarettes are becoming increasingly popular with smokers who want to cut down or stop smoking, as yet none of them is licensed as a medicine in the UK. No-one yet knows how safe they are, although there is consensus among medical experts that e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking

tobacco. The new nicotine product does not produce ash or smoke and does not involve heat or combustion. It does not require a battery and only needs the user to inhale. The licence means the product can only be promoted to smokers and cannot be sold to children. Deborah Arnott, chief executive of health charity Ash, said she welcomed the decision by the MHRA. "This new alternative to smoking will allow smokers to choose a product which meets the high standards of medicines regulation and could be provided on prescription to help them stop smoking." A spokesman from the MHRA said it encouraged companies to submit medicines licence applications for electronic cigarettes and other nicotine-containing products. It is not yet available but could be on sale in a few months' time.

Major new funding boost for small British charities British charities will receive a multimillion pound boost with the launch of a new fund to help small and mediumsized organisations make an even bigger difference in the developing world, International Development Secretary Justine Greening has announced. The UK Aid Direct fund will run over five years, with a total of £30 million in new grants available to small and medium charities in the first year. The programme aims to make the most of smaller charities’ grassroots knowledge, local contacts and specialist expertise. Justine Greening launched UK Aid Direct in Cardiff at the first in a series of nationwide ‘DFID Direct’ roadshows aimed at encouraging smaller charities to make the most of funding from the Department for International Development (DFID). The International Development Secretary was joined in Cardiff by two small Welsh charities who already receive DFID funding. Interburns is reducing deaths from burn injuries in Bangladesh and Nepal, and PONT is helping children and pregnant women access emergency healthcare in Uganda. Launching the new UK Aid Direct fund, Justine Greening said: “I am proud that Britain already supports hundreds

of small and medium-sized UK charities whose vital work is improving lives across the world. “British expertise is getting children into school, fighting deadly diseases and helping people earn a living in some of the world’s poorest places. “The launch of UK Aid Direct means we can work hand in hand with fantastic smaller charities that have a unique ability to identify needs, build relationships and tackle specific issues at a grassroots level.” As part of its drive to help smaller charities access DFID funding, the UK Aid Direct application process is designed to support small NGOs, with tailored advice and guidance available to those applying for DFID funding for the first time. DFID has also launched a new online ‘funding finder’ tool that will make it even easier for organisations to identify funding opportunities. UK Aid Direct builds on the success and momentum of DFID’s Global Poverty Action Fund (GPAF), which has awarded more than 160 grants over the last four years to small and medium British charities working in the developing world.

Primary school teacher strangled to death

A woman who was found critically injured at her Stockport home has sadly died. At around 1.50am on Monday 18th August 2014, police were called to Longford Road West, in north Reddish, following reports a 35-year-old woman had been attacked. Officers attended and the woman, now formally identified as Ruckshana Miah, was taken to hospital where she sadly died. A Home Office post mortem concluded her death was as a result of compression on the neck. Abdul Kashem Miah, 36, of Florist Street, Shaw Heath, appeared at Stockport Magistrates Court and was charged with attempted murder. He is next due to appear at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square on 10th September 2014. Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington, said: “Sadly Ruckshana's injuries proved fatal and a murder investigation is now underway. “Her family are clearly devastated and we would ask they be given time and space to grieve and come to terms with her tragic death. “Ruckshana was a mother to two young children, who now face having to grow up and live the rest of their lives without her, and that is simply heartbreaking.” In a statement her family, said: “Ruckshana was a wonderful daughter, mother, sister, aunty, cousin and friend that will be greatly missed by us all.” Des Howlett, Head Teacher of Broadoak Primary School where Rukshana worked, said: “Rukshana Miah was a wonderful and talented teacher at Broadoak Primary School in Ashton who touched the lives of everyone she met.

“Rukshana was the heart of the school, an outstanding teacher who was devoted to the success of the children that she taught. “She always wanted to be the best and for her children to be the best and her belief that anything was possible if you work hard enough had an impact on everyone she met. “Ruk was full of life and passion for the children that she taught and friends that she made. That same wonderful smile greeted every challenge, every child and every joke alike and her many friends knew that their friendships were firm and valuable. “She made us laugh and will continue to do so as we share memories and remember her jokes. We were and always will be extremely proud of having Rukshana as a teacher at our school and as a friend. “She was a natural teacher and a great friend and colleague. We are all very proud to have known her. “Ruk herself would always say that her greatest achievement was her children and her love and pride for them shone through every day. She was a fantastic mother who knew that time was precious and so was always doing something with them or taking them to places. “They were her life and made her laugh whether she liked it or not. ‘Most Wanted’ international tax criminals back in the UK

WANTED: HMRC state that Ahmed Salim Khezri’s fraud is estimated at over £2.2 million

A group of the UK’s top tax fugitives have been brought back to the UK to face justice following a global HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) initiative. Of the ‘Most Wanted’ fugitives who fled abroad before or during their trial, five have been brought back to the UK in the past year to serve their prison terms. Building on this success, HMRC published more photos of Britain’s Most Wanted tax fugitives, including Ahmed Salim Khezri from Illminster, Rochdale, Greater Manchester, and asking for the public to play their part in helping to track these criminals down. Khezri, an Iranian national, is wanted in connection with a huge cigarette smuggling conspiracy. He was part of an organised crime group that stood trial at

Manchester Crown Court, found guilty in his absence and sentenced to a six year jail term in April 2014. His part in the fraud is estimated at over £2.2 million. Jennie Granger, HMRC’s Director General of Enforcement and Compliance, said: “Tax fraudsters line their pockets at the UK’s expense. “The individuals on our Most Wanted list have been charged but fled the country to avoid justice, so it’s excellent news for all honest taxpayers that five fugitives on last year’s list have now been brought back to face the consequences. This is down to the determination of our people with the help and support of the general public. “We would like to thank the public for that help, and ask them to look at the 2014 list and help us

to bring back the rest. “These fugitives were involved in frauds that have collectively cost the UK over £844 million but the success of our campaign means those on the run should know that HMRC will relentlessly pursue them.” In the two years since HMRC first published the images of its top tax fraud absconders, three million public viewings have resulted directly in the capture of some of the fugitives. In addition, HMRC now knows where 16 of the Most Wanted fugitives are. Where legally possible, HMRC will seek extraditions with the help of the Crown Prosecution Service and other partners, both in the UK and overseas to ensure as many are brought back to the UK as possible.

Pakistan’s flood disaster spreads to Multan

China sacked two officials who ransacked a restaurant and beat the manager in a fit of rage over their small servings of food and cheap liquor, state media said on Thursday, amid a crackdown on extravagance by the country's top leaders. Li Jingli, the party secretary in Xingtangsi township in Shanxi province, was dining with eight other local officials, including the head of discipline inspection Liu Bin, when the quarrel with the restaurant manager

started. The People's Daily reported the two officials were upset at being served ‘small dishes and cheap cigarettes and liquor’. The group forced the manager to drink liquor, and Liu beat the person while Li smashed up the restaurant, the online version of the party mouthpiece said. “They marched off, the scene in complete disorder, leaving no way for the restaurant to continue normal operations,” it said.

Rice-bucket challenge

The famous ‘ice bucket’ challenge is inspiring thousands of Indians to follow suit, but with a twist - they are replacing ice with rice in a bid to help the country's vast population of poor, hungry people. The city of Multan and surrounding areas in Punjab province in Pakistan are on high alert as the Chenab river continues to surge south at extremely high levels. Government authorities are now taking measures to protect two crucial bridges in the district. Waters have been moving south through Punjab, inundating large tracts of farmland. The floods this year have been the worst since 2010, but reports are that it is not as widespread. In the city of Srinagar, in Kashmir, thousands have been stranded, homeless and hungry by the region's worst flooding in 50 years. Both the Indian and Pakistan sides of the disputed Himalayan territory have

been hit by extensive flooding since the Jhelum river, swollen by unusually heavy rain, surged last week. The river flows from Indian Kashmir to the Pakistan side, and then down into Pakistan's lower Indus river basin. On the Pakistani side, officials put the death toll at 264 on Friday 12th September and said that more than one million people had been affected by floodwaters now cresting in the densely populated province of Punjab. In New Delhi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said about 200 Indians had been killed and around 130,000 rescued. People desperately continue to search for missing family members in Srinagar, a city of some 1.2 million who now facing

an acute shortage of fuel, food and medicines. The ferocity of the floods appeared to have caught the administration in Indian Kashmir by surprise and has prompted an outpouring of anger in a Muslim-majority region where a revolt against Indian rule has simmered for quarter of a century. Many people praised the Indian army on social media for its rescue and relief efforts, but others vented their anger at delays in getting help to survivors. All but one of Srinagar's major hospitals were under water, and six infants died in a maternity hospital due to a lack of medical care, a rescuer said, and telecommunication links to the city have been down for days.

Malala Yousafzai’s attackers arrested Pakistan's army has announced that authorities had arrested a group of Taliban militants responsible for shooting Malala Yousafzai, a teenage activist who was targeted for her campaign against Taliban efforts to deny girls education. Pakistani Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for shooting Malala in 2012 for her passionate advocacy of women's right to education but no one had until now been arrested. Two other schoolgirls were wounded in the attack. Asim Bajwa, head of the army's press

wing, told reporters that 10 attackers had been identified and arrested. US send more troops

President Barack Obama has ordered an increase of about 350 troops in Baghdad to protect the U.S. Embassy in the Iraqi capital whilst also sending top officials to the Middle East to ‘build a stronger regional partnership’ against Islamic State militants. The actions reflect the growing US concern about the threat posed by the Sunni Muslim militants who have captured parts of Iraq and Syria. The White House said the additional troops

heading to Baghdad would not serve in a combat role. Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon press secretary, said the move to augment a U.S. force already in Baghdad providing security at the large embassy compound and its support facilities would bring the total number of military personnel to bolster diplomatic security in Iraq to about 820. Al-Qaida leader says it has expanded into India PAKISTAN: Army chief steps in to quell disagreement

Al-Qaida has expanded into India, the leader of the terror group said in a video released this week, vowing that its militants would bring Islamic law to the entire subcontinent and ‘wage jihad against its enemies’. At least three Indian states with large Muslim populations have been put on alert in the wake of the video's release, local TV stations reported, though there was no indication of an increased security presence. The new group "is the fruit of a blessed effort of more than two years to gather the mujahedeen in the Indian subcontinent into a single entity," al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahri said in the video, which was seen online by the SITE monitoring group. While his comments raised concerns in India, al-Zawahri's message seemed largely directed at his own rivals in the international jihad movement, and with raising al-Qaida's profile in the wake of repeated successes by the Islamic State militant group. Al-Qaida has been increasingly overshadowed by the Islamic State, whose fighters have captured wide swaths of Syria and Iraq and recently executed two American journalists. Al-Qaida "is struggling for its legitimacy in the eyes of the radicalized Muslim world," said

Ajai Sahni, a top Indian security analyst with the New Delhi-based Institute for Conflict Management. "Osama bin Laden has been killed and (al-Qaida's) entire top leadership, apart from Zawahri and a few others, one by one have been decimated by the American drone attacks," he said. While al-Zawahri's statement referred to the "Indian subcontinent" — a term that most commonly refers to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal — his comments were widely seen as directed at India, a largely Hindu nation with a large Muslim minority. Al-Zawahri said the group, Qaedat al-Jihad in the Indian subcontinent, would fight for an Islamic state and laws across the region, ‘which was part of the Muslims' territories before it was occupied by the infidel enemy’. The leader of the new group, Essam Omar, said in an audio recording released with the video, that Jews and Hindus — who he referred to as ‘apostates of India’ — ‘will watch your destruction by your own eyes’. Fighters will ‘storm your barricades with cars packed with gunpowder’, Omar said, decrying what he called the region's ‘injustice toward Muslims’. Until recently, India had largely

seen itself as beyond the recruiting territory of international jihadists like al-Qaida. Over the past few months, however, the Islamic State has grown in prominence in India, and is increasingly believed to be gaining followers there. Last month, an Indian engineering student who had traveled to Iraq with friends, and who was thought to have joined the Islamic State, was reportedly killed. Indian Home Minister Rajnath Singh met Thursday morning with top security and intelligence officials to discuss the threat. A spokesman for India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party said the statement was "a matter of serious concern. But there is nothing to worry about. We have a strong government at the federal level." India, though, has a notoriously underfunded and ill-trained security infrastructure. In 2008, a small group of Pakistani militants attacked Mumbai, India's financial hub, effectively shutting down the city for days and killing 166 people. New Delhi has also waged a long-running insurgency war in Kashmir, India's only majorityMuslim state, with militants fighting to bring independence to the Himalayan region or join it to neighboring Pakistan. The fighting has left thousands of people dead.

Weeks of mounting antigovernment protests in Pakistan had been enough to convince five of the powerful army's 11 Corps Commanders that it was time for them to step in and force embattled Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to resign. According to a minister close to military circles, top generals met in the garrison city of Rawalpindi at the end of August as demonstrations raged in nearby Islamabad. Thousands of protesters had just tried to storm Sharif's residence. At the tense, four-hour conclave, Pakistan's democratic process was once again in peril, with the military pondering another intervention in a country that has seen power change hands more often through coups than elections. But army chief Raheel Sharif decided the time was not right to overthrow the civilian leadership, and moved to quell any disagreement in his ranks by

overruling the hawks and declaring the crisis must be solved through politics, not force. Soon afterwards, the army issued a brief statement, reaffirming its commitment to democracy, and the threat of a coup, at least for now, had passed. The minister, who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of discussing the inner workings of the military, said at least five generals had been pushing for weeks for the army to take a more ‘active role’ in defusing the crisis. "The time for the army to be neutral is over," was how the minister summed up the message from dissenters around the table. Two military sources confirmed this version of events. They, like the minister, spoke on condition of anonymity. A senior security source added: "Raheel Sharif is not interested in direct intervention. The tanks aren't going to come rolling in. This army believes in compromise."

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he would seal a civil nuclear deal to sell uranium to India on Friday, offering to ramp up supplies of energy to help the emerging Asian giant overcome chronic shortages. Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted Abbott with full state honours during his two-day visit to India. The two leaders were due to hold formal talks later and sign the deal to sell uranium for peaceful power generation.

“Prime Minister Modi and I will today sign a nuclear cooperation agreement,” Abbott told business leaders. Fatal Floods kill dozens

At least 73 people have been killed across Pakistan after heavy rains brought flash floods and caused homes to collapse in the Punjab and Kashmir regions, government officials said Friday. Australian PM returns stolen 11th century idols to India Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott handed over to his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, two antique statues of Hindu deities, which were allegedly stolen from temples in Tamil Nadu before being bought by art galleries in Australia. During his meeting with Modi, Abbott returned the idols, one of which is a Nataraja - the dancing Shiva - which belonged to the Chola dynasty of the 11th-12th century. The other sculpture is of Ardhanariswara, which represents Shiva in half-female form, and dates back to the 10th century. Both the statues were allegedly stolen from temples in Tamil Nadu and their return was sought by India in March. Returning the sculptures is a testimony to Australia's good citizenship on such matters and the importance with which Australia views its relationship with India, Abbott's office said. The Nataraja statue, which is cast

in bronze, was purchased by the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2004 for approximately 300,000 Australian dollars. In 2012, Kapoor, owner of the "Art of the Past" gallery in New York, was arrested in Germany and subsequently extradited to India. He is accused of conspiracy to commit burglary and smuggling from Tamil Nadu antique idols of Hindu deities belonging to Chola dynasty. The case is currently at the prosecution stage in Tamil Nadu and Australian authorities have been assisting in conducting investigations in the case in Australia. Siddharth Anand, who is making ‘Bang Bang’ has managed to shoot the biggest action sequence ever in Bollywood. A chase sequence involving Hrithik Roshan driving a car had more than 120 cars in it. It was shot in Abu Dhabi and the makers were very careful that the pictures of the chase sequence didn’t get leaked. It was a well-guarded shoot. To ensure this mammoth task was carried successfully, Hollywood action director, Andy Armstrong was roped in to shoot the chase sequence. Before the actual filming, Hrithik did some dry runs of the car he was going to drive. Once he was comfortable with it, they stared filming. Also, all the cars from the shoot were hired from Abu Dhabi. They all were highend cars, but the car that Hrithik was using remains a mystery. ‘Bang Bang’ stars Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif in lead roles. Being a singer was considered an elite thing back then, what do you have to say about the current scenario with so many songsters flooding in the industry? SHAAN: Unless you can do something incredible with your voice you are just among millions who are singing today with their antics. Going back to the golden era is always going to be great and the voice is also genuine. I was probably among the last generation of singers whose voice is not being pitched. But even that changed from 20042005. Now even my voice is being pitched wherever I sing.

Is singing losing its sheen? SHAAN: If Honey Singh croons a number and considered as a song, which is ideally what? - a rap or

Earlier also there were raunchy lyrics like in the track ‘Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja’ but you never felt ashamed of it because the tune, the singing, the music, etc was done like a jazz song. But now the music ability has only dropped. So it’s the way you sing. If you sing a good song like ‘Hume Tumse Pyaar Kitna’ in an indecent way with a guttural tone, it will obviously sound sick. The tonality has to be perfect. If a situation is a cabaret and the girl is throwing herself on you how can the lyrics not be raunchy?

Passive safety In line with Lexus’s stringent carto-car impact compatibility standards, the NX 300h has been created with the aim of achieving class-leading performance. Front and side impact protection measures include the use of high tensile strength sheet steel (up to 980Mpa) in key areas, including the centre pillar hinge reinforcement, outer rockers and roof crossmembers. In a collision, side impact load is direct to the floor through cross-members built into the rockers beneath the centre pillars. The roof impact resistance structure disperses load when the roof is crushed, minimising cabin distortion. It includes front pillar reinforcement and high-strength steel reinforcements in the centre

pillars, and reinforcement around the seatbelt anchors. In the cabin there are energyabsorbing structures in the pillars and headlining and impactabsorbing pads in the front and rear door trims, alongside the occupants’ lumbar region. Car tax disc to be abolished in UK’s biggest motoring shake up

After almost 94 years, the paper car tax disc is being phased out from 1st October this year. After that date, a paper disc will no longer have to be displayed in a vehicle, but car owners will still need to pay the duty as normal. Licence plate recognition cameras will now detect those cars that do not have up to date tax. Most on-road enforcement action is now based on using Automatic Number Plate Readers. These cameras use the number plate rather than a visual inspection of the tax disc. The police also have access to DVLA records via the police national computer. There are significant savings for fleet operators and other businesses from not having to handle the administration of tax discs.

Mini and Touring Superleggera, the tradition-steeped design and coach building house based in Milan, have brought the MINI Superleggera Vision to the UK for the first time at the highly exclusive Salon Privé – the British supercar show, this week. The MINI Superleggera Vision is on the one hand a classic roadster – a compact and agile two-seater – expressing the most

minimalist and emotional style of motoring; and on the other hand its electric drivetrain gives the car distinctly modern driving dynamics. BMW say that the car perpetuates what the Classic Mini started 55 years ago: reduction to the essentials. Its proportions indicate at first glance what the electrically powered Mini Superleggera Vision has to offer in terms of a driving experience: the stretched bonnet, long wheelbase and cool, short overhangs convey pure

driving fun. As in every Mini, the wheels are set widely on the body, promising a high degree of agility. The passenger cell is slightly set back, further underscoring the car's dynamic impression. The front of the roadster features the traditional Mini design icons: two circular headlights and a hexagonal grille. There are also striking classic sports car elements such as a wide track and distinctively curved wheel arches that give the front a dynamic presence.

Classic coachwork construction in a cutting-edge interpretation. The striking element of the side view is the characteristic “Touring” line. It embodies both the high art of coachwork building and classic aesthetics. To this day, Touring Superleggera shapes large aluminium sheets by hand using the most performing frame structures. There are very few gaps in the body since it is constructed from large sheets of metal. The result is a closed look that conveys high-quality

elegance. The exterior and interior design of the Mini Superleggera Vision merge seamlessly. Only a surrounding shoulder line in polished aluminium visually separates the exterior and interior from each other. Overall in its styling and in the look and feel of its materials, it reflects classic Italian body construction and hand-shaped metal sheeting give the Mini Superleggera Vision a unique emotional appeal.

A pre-tournament cut above the eye was not enough to stop a local boxer from clinching his latest accolade last week as Muhammad Ali walked away with a bronze medal at the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympics. The 18-year-old, from Keighley, was competing in the prestigious competition for the first time after qualifying for the flyweight category. Representing Team GB, Ali overcame opponents from Azerbaijan and India in what he described as the ‘biggest competition’ he has fought in. “It was a great experience and one which I will never forget,” he said. “To come away with a Bronze medal was great because of how big the actual competition was. “Everyone has been saying it is the right way to go before hopefully getting a shot at the senior Olympics and I would love to compete there.”

FLOYD MAYWEATHER VS MARCOS MAIDANA There's the rest and then there's the boxing best

The world of boxing has currently a number of world champions at different weight divisions. However there is no boxer like the current pound for pound best and the self-proclaimed multimillionaire, “The Best Ever” Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather is an undefeated five-division world champion, having won over ten world titles in four different weight classes. In addition, Mayweather is the Ring magazine, Fighter of the Year Champion and Best Fighter ESPY award winner over a number of years. Mayweather has topped the Forbes and Sports illustrated lists of the 50 highest paid athletes and is currently the highest paid athlete in the world. In childhood Mayweather’s life revolved around boxing with a number of family members including his father and uncles being successful professional boxers and much like the “Gracie” family known in Brazil as the family of jujitsu martial arts the same can be said for the Mayweather family in boxing terms with their unique boxing style and impeccable boxing skills. Mayweather as a child grew in the life of poverty and when he was eight years old there were eight people including Mayweather himself living in a onebedroom house with no electricity and very little food. There was also the need for the Mayweather family to get involved in illegal drugs and for Mayweather it was not uncommon for him to come home from School or boxing training and find used heroin needles in his front yard or his father (then ex-boxer) being arrested by the Police for drug dealing. Mayweather as boxer is probably the most skilled and complete fighter ever to enter the boxing ring in the history of the sport. His boxing speed and defensive abilities have frustrated all of his 46 willing boxing opponents and made Mayweather the majority winner and relatively unscathed or hurt in every boxing bout. However, on September 13th 2014 Mayweather at 37-years-of-age and after having a long and active boxing career will face his most active and probably most dangerous opponent to date Marcos Maidana. Having fought Maidana previously in May, Mayweather for the first time in his recent boxing career lost two rounds against Maidana who used rough fighting tactics and threw punches and illegal elbows and head butts to the body, head, arms and shoulders that resulted for the first time Mayweather receiving a cut over his eye and a bloody face. However, Mayweather still managed to narrowly win against Maidana, but he was frustrated that he had for the first time in a long time lost at least two rounds out of the twelve against an boxing opponent and made to look like an ordinary fighter. On September 13th, in my opinion, the undefeated Floyd Mayweather will face the biggest challenge of his career against Maidana, but I am sure that he will prove his superiority again and win via a majority decision. Mayweather has a very good boxing brain and always manages to adjust his game plan to win fights and against Maidana this time he will know what to expect and will devise a strategy to win comfortably. Maidana on the other hand as Mayweather’s opponent is a very strong and willing fighter and will give his best every second of every round and will throw “punches in bunches” even though they will not all connect against the Mayweather ultimate boxing defence. I envisage seeing the very best, determined and bulletproof Mayweather on September 13th and even if Mayweather makes the slightest of boxing adjustments compared to the May boxing bout I believe he will be guaranteed the victory.

STABBED! Knife attack leaves BrookKhan showdown in the dark

Just three weeks ago, Sheffield boxer Kell Brook was on top of the world having just clinched his first World Championship. Yet this past week, with the triumph still fresh in the minds of boxing fans around the world, the 28-year-old’s career high moment suddenly took a turn for the worst as he was stabbed in the leg whilst on holiday. Brook had been holidaying in Tenerife with his pregnant wife when the attack happened at an apartment complex in the morning of Thursday 4th September, around 8am. A police spokesperson confirmed that there was ‘a lot of blood’ at the scene and the welterweight competitor was taken to a hospital in the island's capital Santa Cruz. “This morning a 28-year-old British man was stabbed at Golf del Sur in San Miguel de Abona,” the spokeswoman said. “He was stabbed in the left leg and is hospitalised. He lost a lot of blood. There are no arrests at this time and the Guardia Civil are investigating.” Brook had only recently won the IBF World Welterweight Championship and was already being tipped by many in the

industry to fight Amir Khan at Wembley for his next challenge. As he currently recovers in hospital, it will take time to reveal how serious the injuries are to his leg and what it would mean for any prospective Wembley showdown. Eddie Hearn, Brook’s sports promoter told The Daily Mail on Thursday: “I will be flying out tonight to see what is going on. “We are all worried about what has happened. There are a lot of stories out there so let's just wait and see. I am told he is stable.” It is not the first time that the Yorkshire boxer has been stabbed after sustaining injuries to his side and buttocks in an attack at his home in 2007. This latest incident also follows the assault of fellow boxer, Jamie Moore, who was shot in both legs four weeks ago whilst training in Marbella.

Ali’s success in China sees him add the Bronze medal to his Silver picked up in the World Championships earlier this year. Up next is the European’s, and with the determined teen going into the competition as favourite, he says there is only one medal he is aiming for this time - Gold.

After clinching a double point’s finish in the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa last month, the Force India team say they are determined to build on that performance in Italy this weekend. Sergio Perez, who is seemingly edging closer and closer towards a new contract every day, came home in his third best position of the campaign, in eighth spot, followed closely by teammate Nico Hulkenberg. Despite a minor bump in the season recently, the pair looked more composed in their latest outing and are both confident

ahead of Monza. Perez said he has fond memories of the course and looked forward to returning. He said: “It’s another favourite of mine. I think everybody enjoys going there because it’s such a beautiful location. “I raced there a few times before Formula One and always had good results. I was on the podium two years ago [finishing second] – it was one of my best races in Formula One and a very special memory.” The 24-year-old’s German teammate had started his life as a Force India driver in blistering fashion, claiming points in his first 10 races. However, just one point from

the last two grand prix has seen him slip in the driver’s standings to seventh spot, something he is determined to rectify as soon as possible. Hulkenberg added: “It was a mixed weekend [at Spa]. “We had good pace, but we couldn't achieve the maximum because of the mistakes in qualifying. “The race was interesting; we made up a lot of positions, but we also lost some time battling our way through the traffic. In the end, we got one point and that's better than nothing.” Last year Hulkenberg finished fifth on the track in Italy and will be hoping for a repeat performance this Sunday.

SUCCESS: Zeeshan picked up two bronze medals in his latest contest in Manchester last weekend and hopes to continue competing in the sport professionally

He may have only started kickboxing 14 months ago, yet a young competitor from Bradford is already beginning to gain quite the medal collection. Eight-year-old Zeeshan Ramzan’s latest challenge saw him travel to Manchester last weekend to compete in the FSK Grand Championships. Competing in the under 25kg category, for youths aged between eight and 13, the young fighter picked up two bronze medals in the light contact and points competitions. As one of the youngest competitors in attendance, Zeeshan’s achievements were all the more impressive as he continued on his quest in the sport. His father, Mohammed Ramzan, says it was a tough tournament and was delighted to see his son achieve ‘what he deserves’. “Every time he steps out on that mat, win or lose, I am so proud of him,” he said. “It takes a lot of courage just to do that. “Last weekend, he deserved to come away with a medal so to see him clinch the two bronzes was a great achievement. “He just keeps getting better and I never thought he would be so good at this so fast. I will continue to support him in whatever way I can as long as he is enjoying himself.”

RUNNER: Joginder Singh has completed almost 300 marathons to date, with his latest venture seeing him complete Fleetwood’s 13 mile challenge

A marathon runner from Bradford says he has no plans to stop doing what he loves after completing his 287th run last weekend. 63-year-old Joginder Singh, from East Bowling, finished the Fleetwood half-marathon on Sunday in a time of one hour 45 minutes. Despite his age, the marathon man shows no signs of slowing down, with plans to complete 26mile challenges in India next month, before heading to the US for his eighth New York Marathon later in the year. The vice-president of Bradford’s Guru Nanak Sikh Temple, has completed 32 races since he last took part in the world-renowned marathon and says he is looking forward to returning to the States. Of course between the races, he will also squeeze in runs closer to home as he edges nearer to the

300 milestone mark. Speaking after his latest run he said: “I still feel strong and do plenty of training. “Many runs have gone and there are many more to come. I won’t stop at 300, just keep going.” When asked about his age, and whether the runs were starting to get harder, he added: “It’s still easy.” Joginder has completed runs all around the world with double marathons taking place everywhere from Kent to Asia. In total, he has covered more than 3,500 miles over the past 20 years with a mixture of 10k challenges, half-marathons, marathons and doublemarathons completed. He has raised thousands of pounds for charities and become a local legend for his epic collection of medals.
