A first-time author from Huddersfield has delved deep into the roots of Bhangra dancing to uncover the town’s somewhat unknown historic relationship with the popular Punjabi dance. Hardeep Singh Sahota, who is a research fellow at the local university, published his book Bhangra: Mystics, Music and Migration, which explores the past, present and future tellings of the Indian art form. Hardeep has long had a passion for Bhangra, dancing since his childhood and most recently completing a Heritage Lottery Fund project named Bhangra Renaissance, probing the origins of the form in India and how migrants brought it to Yorkshire towns. Alongside this, the academic has also completed his Masters degree in the same topic and set up a community group named VIRSA – a word meaning ‘heritage’ in the Panjabi language – and launched World Bhangra Day. Now, his new book pulls together all the strands of his research and traces the origins of Bhangra in the folk traditions and religious rituals

INSPIRATION: Hardeep’s grandfather, Phuman Singh, was primarily a singer and introduced his grandson to Bhangra

of the Punjab. Explaining what the text will cover, Hardeep said: “My research into Bhangra started with my own feelings and passion for Bhangra dance. “Growing up I always thought the hub of Bhangra was in Birmingham...but through some of

the oral histories which we began to explore we found out that there was actually a Bhangra dance team back in 1968 here in Huddersfield.” As a boy growing up in Huddersfield, Hardeep says he was very close to his grandfather, Phuman Singh, who had come to the UK in the 1950s. He performed religious songs at the local Gurdwara as well as folk songs at weddings and was the lead singer for the 1970’s bhangra group Dewana Mastana. “He was primarily a singer, but my passion lay much more with dance,” Hardeep added. “Since I was very little, every time there would be a family celebration I would be the first one dancing.” The book covers the evolution of the mysticism, music and dance of Bhangra on its home soil and in the UK, where cross-fertilisation with rock and hip-hop had a transformative effect. The contribution made by leading performers and innovators, such as Malkit Singh and A.S. Kang, is analysed in detail whilst visually, the book is packed with pictures, including original artwork and photographs from Sara Rizvi, Tim Smith and Zara Hussain.

AUTHOR: Hardeep Singh Sahota has long had a passion for Bhangra dance and traces the origins of the art form in Huddersfield in his book, Bhangra: Mystics, Music and Migration

“It is a natural, earthy dance with warrior rhythms that seduce the dancer and the audience. Bhangra is about being able to shed your inhibitions completely, to move to the music without any hesitation. Gesturing through Bhangra moves with fellow dancers inspires a connection with them, and for me, personally, the realisation of a connection to a higher spiritual plane.”

FILMING: Ashish R Mohan is the director of the film and says England was the only place where he could find everything he needed ‘all under one roof’

Bollywood in Bradford

‘Welcome to Karachi’ filmed in Yorkshire By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Bradford’s reputation as a Bollywood hub in England was reaffirmed earlier this week as scenes for a Bollywood production were shot in the city. ‘Welcome to Karachi’ features the pairing of Arshad Warsi and Jacky Bhagnani as two lost Indians, stuck in the dangerous city of Karachi. With political turmoil rife in the city, the duo have to fend for themselves with no money, no passports, no means of communication, and perhaps most importantly, no way of getting home. Warsi plays an incident-prone character whose mishaps often see the pair fall into tricky circumstances, bound to amuse audiences everywhere. Director, Ashish R Mohan, who worked as assistant director on the ‘Golmaal’ series of films as well as

directing ‘Khiladi 786’, will be leading the production from behind the lens. Speaking to the Asian Express on set at Bradford Bazaar, Mohan said England had already proven to be a fantastic choice to shoot parts of the film. Explaining why he chose the country, he said: “I have actors from America, from India, from Pakistan

and this is the only place with the landscape and lighting I wanted. “I think England is the only place I can find all of the things I need under one roof. So far it has all been very good. “It is the first time I have done anything in London and the people out here in Bradford that I’m working with have been amazing; I’m certainly learning a lot.”

As well as having a comical aspect to the film, Mohan added that there was also a much more serious message he wanted to portray to audiences that ‘good human beings are everywhere’. “The movie is about two people who get stuck in Karachi, with the city being known as one of the most deadly places in the world,” he said. “There are obviously some funny

“How the world is behaving at this point in time, humans don’t seem to matter to those in charge and despite Karachi being labelled as one of the most dangerous cities... this film will show that good human beings are everywhere.”

incidents that happen along the way yet there is also a strong political satire throughout. “How the world is behaving at this point in time, humans don’t seem to matter to those in charge and despite Karachi being labelled as one of the most dangerous cities; the people are still the same. “They have nothing to do with politics, killing people, being dangerous, it is just a perception that has been given to them. This film will show that good human beings are everywhere.” During filming at Bradford Bazaar, some traders and locals got the chance to become extras in the film and will be seen in the final cut of the film upon its release. Jasvinder Singh, owner of the site, said it was great to see the action scenes filmed live and explained how his premises got involved with the movie. “We actually got approached by the producer who said they were doing some shooting in the UK and the bazaar was a site they would like to use,” he said. “We thought it was a good idea and were happy to get involved. If it meant Bradford Bazaar could get some publicity and at the same time put some Bollywood in Bradford, we thought it would be great.” The film is being shot in the UK until the end of October at which point scenes will be taken into postproduction in India before the rest of the movie is captured in India, Karachi and Thailand.

Kids lead the way on 20-Mile trek Thousands raised for charity from ‘Poverty has no borders’ challenge Cover story continued A tiresome day saw the group walk along the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, setting off on their journey at around 9.30am, before finally arriving at their destination at 7.15pm. InTouch founder and board member, Osman Gondal, said he was delighted to see so many people get involved, especially the hard working youths. “Zakariya and Faisal were absolutely fantastic and completed the full 20 miles without any complaining,” he said. “Between them, they also raised around £390 which all goes towards the charity so we are very thankful for all their work.” Mr Gondal added that the presence of the children also acted as a motivation tool for fellow walkers to continue marching on throughout the 10-hour challenge. “People were looking at them and thinking, if they can do it so can I, so they really were little motivators.” The children’s parents, Nadia Riaz and Faisal Pervaiz, said they were incredibly proud of the pair who ‘wouldn’t stop’ throughout the challenge. “They were singing and joking all the way around,” Nadia said. “We thought they might be able to complete ten miles at most but they just wouldn’t stop. “They just said ‘we want to help the poor people’ which was really touching to hear and motivated us all to continue.” In total, almost £5,000 was raised through the ‘Poverty has no borders’ walk on Sunday with donations coming in before, after and even during the event. Along the way, four rest points were allocated in Rodley, Apperley Bridge, Micklethwaite and finally Keighley where the InTouch van was on hand to provide light refreshments and beverages. During the rests, intrigued onlookers also joined the team for a drink or a bite to eat and spoke about the charity. Mr Gondal says that a number of people made donations to the cause at these moments, helping to take the final tally to an even higher amount. Praising all those who were involved, he added: “Overall it was a really successful day and everybody who came along enjoyed themselves. “For me, being the founder of the charity, the day was a great achievement, seeing so many people come together for this one cause. “Since becoming a registered charity, we have had many more

doors open for us and this next year is going to be a massive one for everyone involved with the charity.” On Tuesday evening, the InTouch team had even more reasons to celebrate after Mr Gondal was issued with the Special Recognition Award at the Incommunities Star Awards.

Diversity ‘doesn’t’ shine here Women’s basketball team withdraw over hijab debate

FORFEIT: The Qatar women’s basketball team withdrew from the 17th Asiad after international rulings stated they could not wear their religious headwear

As the 17th series of the Asian Games kicked off earlier this week, the slogan ‘diversity shines here’ was not at the forefront of the organisers’ minds when the Qatari women’s basketball team were told they could not wear their hijabs. Their response – they withdrew from the competition. Not exactly the start the South Korean hosts may have been expecting. International regulations currently prevent players from wearing the attire, as according to International Basketball

Federation (FIBA) rules, Article 4.2.2 – players cannot wear ‘headgear, hair accessories and jewellery’. The Qatari players had been asked to remove their hijabs before their opening group game against Mongolia on Wednesday, but chose to forfeit the match instead. With no sign of the rule being relaxed ahead of their scheduled match against Nepal on Thursday, the team took the further decision to withdraw from their remaining games at the Asiad. “We have decided not to take part in the remainder of the Asian Games women's basketball competition,” an assistant with Qatar's National Olympic Committee told Reuters by telephone. Nepal's players took to the

court for 15 minutes at the Samsan World Gymnasium, passing and shooting among themselves, before the forfeit was announced. Both Qatar games were recorded as 20-0 defeats on the Games' official website. The wearing of hijabs has become a hot topic in sport in recent years with Muslim athletes complaining that they are being discriminated against. Judoka Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani hit the headlines at the 2012 London Olympics when Saudi Arabia demanded she be allowed to compete wearing a hijab. While international judo federation rules at the time barred her from doing so, Shaherkani was eventually allowed to compete wearing a modified veil.

08703 608 606 The wonderful world of words

The city of Bradford is set to launch a unique literature festival, which brings together renowned authors, speakers and artists for a stimulating blend of eclectic events, designed to reflect the cultural sensibilities of Bradford’s diverse demographic. Taking place during the weekend of 26th to 28th September, the Bradford Literature Festival celebrating the spoken word and writing in its broadest sense, is set to showcase the city’s historical, literary, cultural and faith heritage. Festival organisers say that the events lined up will act as a bridge between different communities, by offering a neutral space for dialogue on themes that are particularly pertinent to Bradford. For instance, the inaugural annual Sacred Poetry event showcasing Bradford’s entire faithscape, takes place this year in the historic Bradford Synagogue in Manningham, a setting that is particularly poignant, given the impact on Bradford of current tensions in the Middle East. In light of the recent rhetoric in Bradford around Israel, a panel discussion will examine ‘The Roots of the Conflict in the Middle East’. The panel will analyse the historical fault lines, examine the emerging power bases and consider their potential impact on the turbulent situation in the Middle East. In the shadow of the referendum vote, Bradford is the perfect place to host a discussion on The Meaning of Identity in Contemporary Britain. Panellists include acclaimed poet and broadcaster Lemn Sissay, Romany filmmaker Damian Le Bas and comedian Shazia Mirza. Children are a big focus for the festival with nearly a third of the launch weekend programing devoted to children’s events, from author talks to workshops focusing on digital literacy and safety. For adults, as well as author events, there are exclusive masterclasses with industry experts. The festival also offers special heritage events to bring Bradford’s historical backdrop to life. Bronte enthusiast Christa Ackroyd leads a heritage tour exploring the social history that shaped the works of Britain’s most famous literary family. Meanwhile, author Mark Davis relates the gruesome yet compulsively fascinating stories of real life 19th century murders in the Victorian courtroom where the murderers were actually tried. ‘Trojan Hoax’ Birmingham teacher speaks out about school’s extremism probe By Majed Iqbal

info@asianexpress.co.uk

September 2014 - 4th Edition

A teacher from one of the schools that was under the spotlight during the ‘Trojan Horse’ investigation has broken his silence. Speaking exclusively to the Asian Express, Inam Anwar, who has worked at a school for over five years as a Head of department, was shocked to hear that his

school was being investigated for extremism. Mr Anwar, a senior member of staff at the school which received an outstanding mark last year by Ofsted, says he believes it was all a ‘pre-meditated’ plan to publically undermine the school, its students and its staff.

Agenda Unprecedented visits

outside the school premises, students in particular have had to deal with the difficulties of being under the spotlight. “Pupils felt their religion, identity was being targeted and the line of questioning made them feel uncomfortable. “This was the worst time they could have chosen as it was exam time for students. This has affected their mental and emotional state and probably has left an impact on their futures in more ways than we can imagine,” he says.

The unannounced visits by Ofsted at the Birmingham-based school placed it under immense pressure earlier this year and at a time when students were preparing to take their GCSE and A Level exams. Mr Anwar, who has previously been through numerous Ofsted inspections, was sceptical from the onset of the ones that took place at this establishment. With four inspections taking place in a duration of just three weeks, Mr Anwar states that an investigation such as this one was unprecedented. “I’ve worked in various schools for over 12 years whose intake has been mixed,” he says. “This school was in Alum Rock, making it pre-dominantly Muslim. It was disturbingly clear that they weren’t here to look at our teaching and learning. There was definitely an agenda sensed”.

“Ofsted said they would be back later but came back sooner than expected, unannounced. They checked rooms, books and attending our meetings. There was no official report released about findings which led media to comment on matters which had not been verified” “Ofsted said they would be back later but came back sooner than expected, unannounced. They checked rooms, books and attended our meetings. There was no official report released about findings which led media to comment on matters which had not been verified,” said a concerned Mr. Anwar

Unusual Line of questioning

Defining ‘Extremism’ Education Secretary at the time Michael Gove brought in former counter-terrorism police chief, Peter Clarke, a man with no known expertise in education to investigate. Like many political campaigners, Mr Anwar has had reservations with how buzzwords like ‘extremism’ have been and continue to be thrown about as a wide net to ‘catch out’ something. “There’s a lot of subjectivity with the Government definition of extremism. Anybody who speaks out against injustice is considered extreme. Define extremism?” argues Mr. Anwar. “There has been no explanation from Michael Gove or Sir Michael Wilshaw (Chief Inspector of Schools In England and head of Ofsted since January 2012). “The current Ofsted report mentions nothing about extremism. All it said was that the school doesn’t prepare children well to tackle issues of extremism. Does that make the school unsatisfactory?”

Character assassination The entire saga has also led the senior teacher to be maligned in national press. A mainstream newspaper, which described Inam Anwar as “a heavily bearded” and “deeply religious person” says he’s responsible for “brainwashing” children at the school. Journalists managed to access his Facebook profile and quote his Status Updates.

“It was deeply unsettling to see how a daily national newspaper reported and undermined my name. When since was it a crime to quote the Quran and to speak for justice and equality?”

Mr Anwar was stunned to see what Ofsted was asking children at the school raising serious concerns on the impartiality of the visit. “Safeguarding, achievement, leadership which is what Ofsted usually come to inspect wasn’t even discussed. Instead there was a fixation on discussions with staff and students about homosexuality.” highlights Mr Anwar. “They asked students ‘Are you forced to hijab?’, ‘Do you (girls) feel hot in the long skirt?’, ‘What would you do if your teacher was “It was deeply unsettling to see homophobic?’. The questions posed were very leading. We felt we were how a daily national newspaper reported and undermined my name. being targeted,” argues Mr. Anwar Since when was it a crime to quote the Quran and to speak for justice Pressure on Students With a media circus carrying on and equality?” questions Mr. Anwar.

UNDECIDED: Mr Khalid has been a taxi driver in Bradford for more than two decades and wants to see more help from council officials before the CAB! Scheme is rolled out

Cabbies request as city aims to make Bradford ‘more welcoming’

Future ‘ambassadors’ want more help TRANSPORT: The trial CAB! Scheme will see two half-day courses run with 12 taxi drivers from Bradford taking part in each one

As news of a project to see Bradford’s taxi drivers become better ‘ambassadors’ for the city was announced earlier this week, one local cabbie has told the Asian Express that the project should be more of a ‘two way street’. Mr Khalid, from Bradford, has been a taxi driver in the city for the past 25 years and says he has driven tens of thousands of people to their required destinations without ever receiving a complaint. However, upon announcement of the optional training being offered to his fellow professionals, the veteran driver says the scheme, titled CAB! (City Ambassadors Bradford) may be too much work. “We already work to a very good level and I have never even received a complaint,” he said. “What is happening now is that the council and other organisations are putting more responsibilities on us that we do not need or want. “If one person is to make a mistake in this job it is reflected on everybody but if someone does their job as it is supposed to be done, we are never commended or appreciated. “If the council want us to help the public more, they need to start helping the taxi drivers first.” The CAB! Scheme is set to be piloted this November with two training courses held at city centre tourist attractions. Both courses will include information about Bradford’s tourist attractions, Bradford’s history and Bradford’s regeneration plans as well as tips on improving customer service. Drivers who successfully complete the course will be able to wear a badge and display a sticker on their vehicle. Organised and funded by networking and advocacy group, Bradford Breakthrough, the group represents 32 senior private and public sector leaders across the Bradford District. It is also supported by Bradford Council’s Tourism and Hackney Carriage and Private Hire departments and by the founders of Positive Bradford, now disbanded but who first mooted the idea two years ago. Chief Executive of Bradford Breakthrough, Colin Philpott, said taxi drivers often form the first impression for a visitor to any city and it was important to take advantage of this. “We have some great taxi drivers in Bradford but we hope to give our cabbies more confidence to be knowledgeable and positive about Bradford,” he said. “This will help make Bradford more welcoming for tourists and business visitors. It will also help boost business for cab drivers who can display the CAB! Badge.” Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Executive Member for Employment, Skills and Culture, added: “We are a welcoming city and we all know that first impressions really count. “I’m therefore pleased that Bradford Breakthrough is organising these training sessions. The district’s cab drivers are at the front line of our tourism offer as well as playing a valued role in relation to business.”

On target Archery event raises hundreds for vulnerable refugees It wasn’t prayers and hymns which were seen at a Bradford church last week but rather bows and arrows as a special archery fundraiser event took place at the historic site. Members from the Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA) engaged in the age-old sport at St Mary’s Magdalene Church in Manningham, raising funds for Syrian refugees. In total £300 was raised through the activities with a host of first-time archers showing their sharp eye in front of the targets. Nazim Ali, general secretary of NADA, said the day was a big success in helping to raise vital funds for those most in need and thanked everyone involved for their support. “We wanted to arrange fun teambuilding sessions and came across archery since it was one of the three sports alongside swimming and horse riding that was highly recommended by Prophet Muhammad (pbut),” he said. “We thought alongside having fun

Next month members from NADA will be putting the funds to use as they travel to the Turkish province of Hatay to deliver aid to Syrian refugees. Earlier this year, ‘Team NADA’ members raised over £5,000 for

orphans in south Asia and for the Minarets Project by running the Bradford 10K Run and the Keighley Big 10K Run’s in March 2014. The money was then delivered in person to orphanages in Azad Kashmir in April 2014.

Challenge Youths get on their saddles for Palestine

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A group of cycling-mad youths from Bradford hopped on their bikes last weekend for a 50-mile bike ride as they looked to expand the legacy of the Tour de France. Young people from the Manningham Youth Action Group, aged between 10 and 19years-old, set off from their base in Selby en-route to the final destination of York, 16 miles away. Along a scenic journey, the group completed their challenging ride whilst also raising funds for the children’s charity, Qaaf Aid, which works with those most vulnerable in areas including Palestine. The testing trek was conquered by 19 young cyclists in total who had initially planned on only completing the route one way. Yet, after staying at a youth

Hostel in York overnight and subsequently taking part in the York Sky Ride the following day, the group decided to complete the cycle once again, all the way home. In total, around 46 miles were covered and according to group leader, Sharat Hussain, it was a fantastic achievement. “The boys were really excited before we set off because the day had been planned for months,” he said. “After weeks of collecting sponsors we made our way to York and decided to join in with the Sky Ride the following day. “This was great, with everyone really enjoying themselves and we even got the chance to meet the Lord Mayor of York who was absolutely delighted to welcome a group from Bradford.” He added: “We had planned on packing the bikes up and getting transport back but everyone was so enthusiastic that we ended up

doing another 16 miles.” As part of the programme young people also gained skills in repairing old bikes, basic bike maintenance and learning how to

ride safely in their community. Bicycles and equipment on the day were provided by Bradford Council Youth Service whilst several local businesses also got involved with the sponsoring of the event. “So far we have raised around £1,300,” Sharat said. “A big thank you goes out to all those friends and family members who sponsored us as well as Janan who were our main sponsor, donating up to £200.”

APPLAUDED: The Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Ian Gillies, and Sheriff of York, John Kenny, welcomed the group with open arms during a Sky Ride event the following day

A grandfather from Bradford was remembered in a loving, charitable manner last weekend as a special evening of entertainment and awareness campaigning was held in the city. 79-year-old Mohammed Sadiq was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 29 years ago and sadly passed away in January earlier this year. His daughters, Hifsa and Salma, witnessed the effects of the condition first hand and were determined to help carry on their father’s legacy in any way they could. Mr Sadiq was a long time supporter of the charity, Parkinson’s UK, right up until his death, taking part in clinical trials in an attempt to help others suffering from the same disease. Thus, on Saturday 20th September, around 140 people attended a special event, organised by Hifsa with the support of her older sister, at Bradford Grammar School. Guests were treated to dance acts, food and special prizes whilst also learning of the true effects of Parkinson’s disease and raising money for the national charity. In total, more than £3,000 was raised through the nights proceedings, something Hifsa says she is incredibly proud to have achieved. “The whole reason we were inspired to do this event was because of my Dad and his work with Parkinson’s UK,” she said.

“He was ill but always wanted to help others and this night was a way of continuing that.” Explaining what the night entailed, she a d d e d : “ T h e evening started o f f with a

speaker from the local branch of Parkinson’s UK outlining the basics of the disease and the effect it has on a person and their families. “Then there were also guests talking about the advancements in treatments before the entertainment and food were brought out. “One really interesting part of the night was when one person demonstrated to the crowd what an exercise class was like for someone with the disease. “Something as simple as picking up a glass of water or clenching a fist can take a long time which I had seen first-hand. “What was really good to hear was other people saying that they had not realised the condition could get that bad, so it showed the awareness campaign had worked.” Hifsa thanked all the people who came along on the day to make the event a bigger success than ever imagined, and also praised the efforts of her sister, Salma, for all her hard work. Maureen Leverington, Parkinson’s UK representative, attended on the night and thanked Hifsa for all her support. She said: “The ladies glam night was a huge success and a fantastic event with approximately 130 people in attendance. “Hifsa did a fantastic job of organising the event in memory of her father Mohammed Sadiq with all the money raised throughout going towards helping people with Parkinson’s and helping to fund research into the disease.”

Family Mediation It’s a sad fact of life that family relationships sometimes break down. Naturally this can be an upsetting and emotional time in your life and can have a huge impact on the whole family. This situation is often not helped by costly and lengthy court proceedings. In this month’s article, Farzana Ishaq of Pudsey Legal explains how Mediation can help ease the pain of family disputes. What is Mediation? Mediation brings couples together to explore their issues and seek mutually agreed solutions in an open and nonconfrontational environment - something which cannot always be achieved in Court Is Mediation compulsory? Since April this year, couples who are divorcing and/or have financial or children

disputes are required to attend a Mediation Information Assessment Meeting (MIAM) before they go to court. This meeting is to find out whether mediation could help you work out your issues, rather than going straight to court.

Suspended sentences for terror offences Bradford brothers face no retrial after jury return no verdict

Is Mediation expensive? It can be considerably cheaper. Government figures estimate that for publicly funded (legal aid) cases the average cost of resolving property and financial disputes through court is £4,000 as opposed to mediation where the average cost is around £500. Is Mediation quicker? The same Government statistics estimate that the same case taken through court would take 435 days whereas the period for mediation is 110 days.

Farzana, a qualified solicitor and family mediator, says Resolving unhappy situations in a non-hostile manner brings obvious benefits including: • Parties can communicate in a safe, secure environment • Reduces tension and hostility • Saves costs of what can sometimes be expensive court battles • Helps children, who see parents working together Mediation can be a wonderful way to leave a lasting legacy of co-operation between separating families. If you think Mediation could help you, call Farzana on 0113 254 9735 for a confidential chat.

ACCUSED: Muhammed Saeed Ahmed and Muhammed Naeem Ahmed were handed suspended sentences for 11 Terrorism Act offences

Two brothers from Bradford have been spared jail this week despite pleading guilty to 11 terror-related offences between them. Muhammed Saeed Ahmed, 21, and Muhammed Naeem Ahmed, 20, went on trial last year at the Old Bailey, accused of preparing to leave the UK for Yemen and Afghanistan by going on training trips to Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons. Upon a search of the pair’s Little Horton home, terrorism handbooks were also found yet both siblings denied plotting to attend terrorism training camps. Jurors were told that they had been radicalised by their brother in-law, Muhammed Shafaraz Ahmed, who had pleaded guilty last year to an offence of preparing for acts of terrorism. In a search of the pair’s home in March 2012 by the North East Counter Terrorism Unit, police found a GPS device, high quality LED torches, night vision goggles and sleeping bags for use in very cold conditions. Handbooks were also found which included: The Al Qaeda Manual and 44 Ways of Supporting Jihad. Despite the evidence, the Ahmed’s father told the court that his sons were just planning a family holiday in Bangladesh. Both Muhammed Saeed and Muhammed Naeem denied the charge of conspiring to attend a place used for terrorist training and after seven days of deliberating, the jury failed to reach a conclusive verdict. Judge Gerald Gordon ruled out a retrial and went on to sentence Saeed Ahmed to 22 months and Naeem Ahmed to 15 months suspended for two years for other offences they had pleaded guilty to. They had earlier admitted 11 offences under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act of possessing a record of information likely to be of use to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.

SITE: The development is scheduled to open in December 2015 and is likely to create around 2,500 jobs in the city centre

Inside the Westfield Broadway shopping centre IMPRESSED: Council Leader, Cllr David Green, speaks with Westfield director of development, Duncan Bower, about the project so far

ON TARGET: Mervyn Lowe, Project Director, said everything was on schedule to date and plans are in place to make the site watertight in December

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Council officials were given a sneak peak as to what the future of shopping in Bradford may hold earlier this week with a tour of the Westfield Broadway development. As the steel structure comes to completion, council leader David Green, was accompanied by the site’s developers to explore the latest updates at the £260m centre. Upon completion, the ten acre site will host more than 70 stores and link up with the rest of the city’s shops with a mall leading out into the city centre. Cllr Green said he was ‘amazed’ at the progress made since his last visit to the site two months ago and was excited to see the project coming together. “Before it was just empty steel work but now you begin to realise what it is going to look like and even more importantly how it will connect with the rest of the city centre,” he said. “When we were talking to Westfield about the planning and design stage, we both were acutely aware that for this place

Developments continue on schedule as stakeholders visit site to be a success for the city, it needed to link in with the rest of Bradford. “This site will hopefully act as a catalyst for Bradford’s shops as a whole.” More than 6,500 tonnes of structural steel has been used to date, if placed end-to-end it would stretch from Bradford to York, whilst 11,000m of hoarding has also been used. 360 workers are currently working on site as they aim to complete the project by December 2015. Mervyn Lowe, project director, said everything was on target so far and the first stores could begin taking shape early next year.

“We are on target so far,” he said. “We aimed to complete the steelwork in the autumn of this year, which we are going to do, and from there we plan to complete the concrete six weeks later and be essentially watertight by December.” He added: “Contractors from two of the sites major occupiers, Marks and Spencers and Debenhams, are due to begin their works in April and everything is going as expected.” As well as M&S and Debenhams, the development will also play host to an array of other shops, including restaurants and cafes, helping to create a mix of fashion, food and lifestyle brands.

Lister’s Lanterns return By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A fantastic lantern parade will weave its way through Bradford’s award winning Lister Park on Saturday 11th October in an event which is not to be missed. Over 100 lanterns will take part in the parade which sets off from the bandstand and will be accompanied by music from local bands Northern Lights and Jamba Samba. Dotted around the park will also be several art installations which are set to light up the skies and tell stories from the park and wider district. The parade will be joined by Glinda the Good Witch of the South from The Wizard of Oz and 75 local women and girls dressed as Dorothy, complete with ruby slippers, from the same film. The ‘75 Dorothys’ are part of the ‘Echoes of OZ’ project jointly funded by Arts Council England and Bradford Council which is inspired by the 75th anniversary of the iconic film ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and celebrates diversity within the district. Over the past year, local children and residents have been getting together at workshops to make the lanterns and the sculptures to be paraded through the park or used to decorate the route. Artworks Creative Communities worked with three groups from Holme Wood creating the sculptures to decorate the route and Cecil Green Arts group worked with communities from Bradford West to create small and large lanterns for the parade. There will be six large lanterns in the parade as well as two lanterns floating on

the lake which take the form of a giant water lily and a water monster. Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe executive member for Employment, Skills and Culture at Bradford Council said she was looking forward to a ‘fabulous evening’ She said: “I'm really pleased that the Arts Council and Government have prioritised Bradford for this investment in arts and culture. “It creates the opportunity to bring together the work created by our communities and arts organisations in the fabulous setting of Lister Park.” People can get involved in lantern making on Saturday 11th October between 12pm and 6pm and a variety of activities including circus skills workshops, street theatre and performances by Dance United and Yorkshire Life Aquatics will take place between 4pm and 6.30pm. The parade starts at 6.45pm from the bandstand before a one mile route is completed, taking in Cartwright Hall and the Mughal Water Gardens before going around the lake and returning to the start.

Citizenship champions By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Young people from across Leeds were awarded for their part in a national citizenship scheme at a glitzy graduation ceremony earlier this week. Over 460 sixteen and seventeenyear-olds attended the graduation ceremony at Elland Road where they received certificates for completing the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme from Councillor Judith Blake, the deputy leader of Leeds City Council. As part of this voluntarily attended scheme, the young people worked over the summer leading on delivering a variety of well-deserved local community projects, including organising a charity music gig that raised £500; holding a Funday in Morley that raised £460 for the Cash for Kids Charity and; rejuvenating a run-down area of Woodhouse by planting flowers, painting and clearing rubbish, with support from local residents and shops. In total, 466 young people gave an average of 30 hours towards their

social action projects. Their hard work amounted to around £90,000 worth of volunteering hours, given to communities and charities across Leeds, Bradford and North Yorkshire this summer. Councillor Judith Blake, said: “These young people are setting an excellent example to us all and demonstrating that hard work really does pay off. Communities across the city have benefited enormously from the commitment these young people have shown. “It was great to have the opportunity to meet with the youngsters and hear about their projects and how successful they all were. Hearing them describe taking part in the scheme as a ‘life changing experience’ was fantastic. “By taking part in this scheme the young people have not only taken on some big challenges, but have come away with new skills and experiences, which will undoubtedly help them in their future careers.” The young people came together over four weeks and participated in fun activities, planning, and then delivered some fantastic social

Bradford considered Britain’s most dangerous city

The “unsafest” cities of Britain

Of Britain's ten most populous cities Bradford is seen as the most dangerous – and Edinburgh is thought of as the safest. New YouGov research asks British people how safe or unsafe they think Britain’s ten most populous cities are, and in all but two cases they tend to find them safe. Bradford is perhaps best remembered to outsiders for 2001’s race riots, lasting three days and leading to hundreds of arrests. It is the only city mentioned in the poll where

more people (42%) say it is unsafe than safe (35%). Britain's second most dangerous city according to the public is Birmingham: people are divided 41-41% on its safety. Edinburgh, well known for the world’s largest arts festival, The Fringe, is considered the safest place in Britain, with 68% saying it is safe and only 14% saying it is unsafe. Bristol and Sheffield are also seen as safe by fairly large margins: 57-19% and 50-25% respectively.

London is actually considered safe by the majority of British people (53%), and Londoners themselves are particularly assured of its safety (75%). However a significant minority (39%) do see it as unsafe, giving it its ranking at sixth place. In 2012 there were 1.67 homicides per 100,000 people in London, and 2.7 in Glasgow, compared to a UK-wide rate of 1. In 2010, the use of “stop and search” was almost four times higher in Scotland than in England and Wales.

Although Glasgow is notoriously impoverished, and it does not have the same appeal in terms of safety as Edinburgh, contrary to its crime statistics in perception it does not fare the worst. 44% see it as safe compared to 38% who see it as unsafe. In this light British cities look dangerous, but the UK has steadily become more peaceful. UK homicides per 100,000 have fallen from 1.99 in 2003; in Glasgow, homicide rates are down 40%.

CHOSEN: Salma Arif was chosen as just one of 25 young people from across the country to attend the Young Muslim Leadership Programme at Oxford

A community champion from Leeds says she is more determined than ever to help improve her local area, after returning home from a prestigious programme in Oxford. 27-year-old Salma Arif, from Harehills, met with esteemed politicians, discussed challenges facing Muslims in society and even dined at Buckingham Palace during the two week residential earlier this month. As part of the Young Muslim Leadership Programme, Salma was selected as just one of 25 individuals, aged between 20 and 29 from across the country, to take part in the programme at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. In cooperation with the Prince's Charities, and with the support of the Amanah Foundation, ISESCO and Barclays, the group were selected to discuss the role of Muslims in society in relation to education, employment, housing and foreign policy. For Salma, as an aspiring politician herself and the chair

of the local labour branch for Harehills and Gipton, it was an experience she will never forget. “When I first got the email telling me that I had been accepted onto the course I was extremely happy because I knew how prestigious the programme was,” she said. “Overall, it was an amazing trip and one which I have come away from only wanting to get more involved with my local community. “There are Muslims in Britain who are working hard, who are qualified and successful and it is now time for these people to come to the forefront. “I want to go out there, work hard, work with society and encourage lots of young Muslims to get involved with helping to change perceptions for the good.” She continued: “One guest speaker was CEO of Fajr Capital, Iqbal Khan, and he said something that really has stayed with me – ‘Be better than you were yesterday’. This is something I am more determined than ever to now

accomplish.” Other speakers during the fortnight included Members of Parliament, senior civil servants and academics, as well as representatives of the media and community organisations. Baroness Sayeeda Warsi was one guest who left a lasting impression on Salma who said it was a real honour to dine alongside the Dewsbury-born politician. “She was a really inspiring person to speak with,” Salma said, “and it was nice to have someone there from Yorkshire as well. “I was sat next to her at dinner and she gave me some fantastic advice and tips about how to go about a career in politics. One particularly inspiring thing she said was ‘if not me then who, and if not now then when’.” As well as group meetings and interactive lectures, the group of 25 were also given the chance to visit some prominent places both inside and outside of the grounds. Get Glowing Skin for Eid

1. Snack on mixed nuts. Brazil nuts are rich in selenium, which increases skin elasticity and may decrease skin cancer, according to recent studies. Throw in walnuts, which are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids to lower inflammation and stop acne breakouts. Finally, add some macadamias. They are full of high quality oils and fatty acids that help with skin repair and rejuvenation. Aim for a handful of each, daily to gain the best of their poreperfecting benefits. 2. Cut down on dairy products in your diet. Dairy products contain cow hormones that stimulate your oil glands and pores, leading to acne. Stick to skimmed milk as the hormones are concentrated in the fat, so it's your best option.

3. Drink an extra glass of water. Water helps clear the toxins that cause inflammation and blemishes. It also helps in transporting nutrients and oxygen to skin cells, and preventing dehydration, which can cause premature aging. It is

"With normal use, a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus," Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said in an email. Apple shares closed down nearly 4 percent at $97.87 on Thursday, wiping out nearly $23 billion in market value. The new phones face criticism

over their bendability, dubbed "bendgate". Social media and online forums have been abuzz with comments about how the new phones can bend when placed in back pockets or while wearing skinny jeans. Apple said its iPhones feature stainless steel and titanium inserts to reinforce high-stress locations and use the strongest glass in the smartphone industry. The only way an iPhone may have bent is if someone put it in their back pocket and sat on the phone for a very long time, said Laban Roomes, chief executive of Goldgenie, which customizes and gold plates iPhones. Apple was also forced to withdraw a faulty update to its latest operating system after some users of its new phones complained of call service disruptions. "We apologize for the great

inconvenience experienced by users," Muller said. Apple said on its website it was working on an iOS update to fix the issue, and will release it in the next few days. Apple said on Monday it had shipped 10 million units of iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Users of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus also complained about the inability to use the fingerprintreading Touch ID after updating to iOS 8.0.1. Some users had complained of "sluggish Wi-Fi and dwindling battery life" after moving to iOS 8. On Thursday, Apple issued a step-by-step guide for users to reinstall iOS 8, launched last week, through the latest version of iTunes. The health app will not work for now and will be fixed in the next software update, the company said.

Terror police hold two in M6 swoop Counter-terror police have made more arrests during a motorway swoop as part of an investigation into alleged support of banned extremist group al-Muhajiroun. Two men, aged 33 and 42, were stopped and detained near junction 1 of the M6, just outside Rugby in Warwickshire, in the early hours, Scotland Yard said. A total of 11 men have now been arrested under the probe, including radical preacher Anjem Choudary, who was one of nine held across London yesterday. In the most recent arrests, the

33-year-old was detained on suspicion of being a member of, or supporting, a banned organisation, and of encouraging terrorism, while the second man, 42, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both are being held in custody at a police station in central London. The arrests come as MPs prepare to vote on whether to join air strikes in Iraq. Lawyer-turned-preacher Choudary was detained shortly after firing off a series of antiWestern messages at 5am on social-networking site Twitter,

including claims that the definition of terrorism is ''more suitable for the US/UK policy in Muslim lands''. Sweet shop Yummy Yummy, owned by Choudary's brother Yadzani, in Whitechapel, east London, was one of 18 properties searched across the capital, while another address in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, was also raided. Searches are continuing. Earlier this week, it was reported that Choudary said he has no sympathy for Alan Henning, a volunteer aid worker who was captured in Syria by Islamic State militants.

Hundreds of runners, joggers and walkers embarked on Leeds’ Roundhay Park last weekend as a special fundraising five-kilometre event returned to the city. Following on from last year’s success, the Give a Gift 5k was held with the aim of raising vital funds for Leeds General Infirmary’s Children’s Heart Unit and Martin House Children’s Hospice. Young and old participants dusted off their running shoes and stretched off their hamstrings to take part in the event, helping to raise thousands of pounds for charity. As of Monday, more than £2,500 had been donated to the cause with donations still coming in to take the tally even higher.

Give a Gift 5K returns Thousands of pounds raised in annual Roundhay run Habib Khan, Give a Gift Ambassador, said it was a ‘fantastic day’ and thanked all the people who had turned out to support the worthy causes. “The turnout for the weekend was fantastic and there was such a diverse range of participants which was really good to see,” he said. “Continuing from last year’s

event, the run is a fantastic was of raising funds for the Give a Gift project and a big thank you goes out to all those who got involved on Sunday.” Other than the five-kilometre challenge, there were also obstacles on the day for event organisers who had to cope with a double booking of the park which was taken in good

spirits. Mr Khan added: “The dilemma on the day was that the people in charge had actually also allowed a triathlon to be booked in for the same time. “It all worked out fine in the end and nobody was having to dodge anyone which is always a positive thing.”

35

Running on the day with his family was businessman Abid Hussain, who was thrilled to see the event return for a second year. “It really was a brilliant day,” he said. “It was lovely to see people coming down to support the charities and we all had lots of fun.” Asian Express Newspaper was the proud media partner of the event, whilst Prime Health and Blackstone were the lead sponsors. Speaking on behalf of the latter, Blackstone director, Bilkis Mahmood, said the day was both fun and rewarding. “We wanted to do something which would help a fantastic cause such as Martin House and by getting involved with Give a Gift we hopefully did just that.”

A police officer from Bradford received one of the country’s highest honours last weekend as he was presented with his British Empire Medal in Bradford. 52-year-old Yasvender Singh Rehill was made aware of his award earlier this year after he was included in the Queen’s Birthday List. Having committed 27 years of his life to serving the West Yorkshire Police force, PC Rehill was commended for services to policing and community engagement in the city. On Sunday 14th September the Community Prevent Engagement Officer received his award at the Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara on Leeds Road, Bradford, at a special ceremony. Speaking previously about his commendation, PC Rehill said it had come as a shock to hear his name had been included on the prestigious Birthday List. He said: “I had no idea at all that I was going to get this honour. It was a big surprise and I am very proud. “I aim to be a role model within the community and I hope this will promote our work and encourage more people to join the force.”

September 2014 - 4th Edition

A Royal Honour Currently, PC Rehill works with communities in the BD3 and BD4 areas of Bradford, liaising with different communities and places of worship to communicate with faith leaders and worshippers. One person who was full of praise for his ‘friend’ was Dave Dufton who recounts one occasion he spoke with the constable about his faith and role in the police. Explaining the tough decisions made in the role, Mr Dufton said: “His love for, and the need to care for, his family, and support to his colleagues was one side of the scale, the other was to remove the customary and required outward signs of an adult male Sikh. “The decision was eventually made, and out came the scissors and razor and the physical appearance became the man we know today. “With all faiths, how one

Officer’s community engagement celebrated in Bradford

conducts oneself, both at worship and towards humanity in general, is much more important than outward appearances. “Changes in physical appearance do not change one's beliefs, or relations with other people, or how one worships the supreme, unimaginable being, that we, each in our own mother tongue, call God.” PC Rehill will attend the ‘Royal Presentation’ next year at Buckingham Palace.

‘Pride of Britain’ Sheffield volunteer is top of the class for fundraising

GIVING: Shahzad Athar has worked tirelessly with youths in Sheffield for the past five years, helping to raise tens of thousands of pounds for charity

TEAM: Collections have been held in supermarkets with youths and fellow AMYA members to help a host of British charities

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A selfless volunteer from Sheffield has been shortlisted to appear at one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in the country, targeted at commending many of society’s unsung heroes. Shahzad Athar, of Page Hall, has been nominated to appear at the annual Pride of Britain awards later this year, due to his fundraising efforts across South Yorkshire. The 34-year-old dedicates more than six hours every day to his charity work, which revolves around his role as a youth leader for the city’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA). Since moving to Sheffield from Pakistan in 2009, the volunteer has been working with youths, aged between seven and 15-year-old, as well as adults. Upon hearing of his nomination by colleague, Tariq Ahmad Tahir, Shahzad says he was ‘surprised’ and ‘humbled’ yet insists he is only doing what his religion teaches. “As a Muslim, I don’t feel like I have actually done anything that special to be nominated for this award but rather I was just following my faith,” he said. “In Islam you are taught to

‘love God and love his creation’ and by doing this work with AMYA we hope to achieve that.” He added: “It did come as a surprise to hear that I had been shortlisted and I was very humbled. “The Pride of Britain awards is a very big ceremony so it was obviously very nice to be shortlisted alongside some fantastic people.” Last year, South Yorkshire’s AMYA wing raised almost £15,000 for different British charities, ranging from the

British Red Cross, to MacMillan Cancer Research and the Poppy Appeal. Homeless feedings are also held every month by the team who commit their own time to the cause of ‘helping humanity’. “That is at the heart of our religion,” Shahzad added. “Everything we do is aimed at helping to serve humanity and we need to act upon this. “We integrate our youth by working with different communities through various activities such as fundraising or tree planting and this helps to promote community cohesion and remove misunderstandings which others may have.” Shahzad’s nomination was also welcomed by regional coordinator, Kamal Aftab who praised his ‘humble’ colleague. “I have known Shahzad for around three years now and I can say he is a genuinely humble person and has a very warm-heart,” he said. “He is 100 per cent committed to helping others and doing the best for communities so I really couldn’t have wished for a better person to have been shortlisted for the award.” Kamal added that his friend has also shown, on a number of occasions in the past, that it isn’t only time which he is willing to give up but also his own money, regularly helping fund the food projects.

Shopping hotspot With hundreds of shops to browse around, and the new multi-million pound Trinity Leeds shopping development proving a massive hit, it comes as little surprise to see the city of Leeds named as one of the top three retail destinations to visit in the UK. The Javelin Group’s annual ranking of the UK’s top 3,000 retail venues has seen Leeds move up one place from last year. The top three destinations outside of London have been named as Glasgow at number one, Manchester in second place and Leeds third. With the arrival of Trinity Leeds and the first direct arena in recent years, Leeds city centre has gone from strength to strength. The centre currently consists of eight indoor shopping centres and over 1000 stores. This latest accolade further strengthens Leeds’ position as a premier retail destination, with an

estimated 1.9million people living within 30 minutes’ drive of the city centre and a total shopping catchment population of nearly 3.2 million people regionally. Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City Council executive board member with responsibility for transport and the economy said: “I am delighted with Leeds going up the league of premier shopping locations in the UK. In the last few years a number of new and exciting developments have sprung up in the city including the Trinity Leeds shopping centre, the arrival of the first direct arena and the start of work to the new Victoria Gate scheme. “Over the last 10 years almost £2.7billion of major property development schemes have been completed in the city with a further £178million of schemes under construction at the end of 2013. “Leeds is thriving and will continue to do so as developments continue to be built in the city centre.”

DRENCHED: Principal Nav Chohan took on the ice bucket challenge to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and Motor Neurone Disease

Ice cold principal College principals may often be thought of as having ice running through their veins and that idea has never been truer than with Shipley College’s very own Nav

Chohan. The principal was the latest person to take on the Ice Bucket Challenge after receiving two nominations; one from colleague and eLearning manager, Tara Durham, and one from a friend. As principal of Shipley College, the head accepted the challenge and received his soaking earlier this week, as can be seen by his video which has

already proven very popular. The protocol of the challenge is that participants are videoed nominating three other people before getting a soaking, usually by a bucket of iced water being tipped over their head. The challenge participant also states the charity or charities they have made a donation to. To the delight of onlookers, Mr Chohan was drenched in ice cold water on site at the college during Freshers Fair. He named Macmillan Cancer Support in his video taken on 10th September, and later when

the video was uploaded on social media he added the charity Motor Neurone Disease Association. Anyone wishing to make a donation to one of the charities should text ICED55 £5 (or other amount) to 70070 to donate to MND association or ICE to 70550 to donate £3 to Macmillan Cancer Support. Mr Chohan’s ice bucket challenge video has already proven popular, receiving hundreds of views on YouTube and can still be watched now.

The Great Poppadom Challenge World record attempt to support city’s Curry Capital bid

CHALLENGE: Azhar Mamood, of Aakash Restaurant, helped oversee the proceedings where 141 poppadoms were eaten in 60 seconds, with no drinks allowed

Knives and forks were set aside at the Aakash restaurant earlier this week as a record breaking challenge took place with poppadoms taking centre stage. The Great Poppadom Challenge saw dozens of diners embark on a one-minute ‘all you can eat’ binge of the tasty treats aiming to break the record for the most poppadoms eaten in one place. From school teachers and pupils, to businesses and just some more than willing guests, the record was broken with 141 consumed in the allocated time frame. Held as part of Bradford’s 2014 Curry Capital bid, the event was a big success following on from the poppadom marathon earlier this month. Azhar Mahmood, of Team Aakash, oversaw the challenge and was delighted to see so many people get involved. “It was a great event and the turnout was good,” he said. “It was a lot more challenging than people had thought but it was still great fun for everyone. To have so many different people all participating under one roof was really nice to see.” He added: “I think 141 was a good result as well. It is a new record and we now leave an open door for other restaurants to try and beat that record and next year we can try for even more.” Aakash is one of the four chosen restaurants to represent Bradford in this year’s Curry Capital bid, alongside fellow eateries, Kiplings, Shimla Spice and Zaara’s. Mohammed Rafiq, of Kiplings, was on hand to support the event on Monday evening, adding that

TEAM: The Aakash staff were on hand to support the event despite the restaurant usually being closed on a Monday

as well as proving to be a big and exciting challenge, the event also importantly raised money for charity. Speaking of this year’s Curry Capital bid, he said: “What we, as the four restaurants in Bradford, are doing is trying to work as one as shown by my attendance here. “This event hasn’t been heavily publicised and to see so many people come down, on their days off to help host the event, has

been great to see. “By raising money for The Curry Tree charity as well it shows that Bradford is not just about good food but also about raising funds for good causes.” You can help Bradford clinch its fourth consecutive Curry Capital title by voting for the city via email - votecity@fedrest.com, or tweeting – ‘@supportcurry I vote for Bradford to be Curry Capital #bfdcurry’.

SCENE: The impact of the crash can be seen by the fallen telegraph pole in Barkerend

15-year-old killed in horrific car crash

KILLED: Saliq Malik was killed when the car he was travelling in ploughed into a wall on Friday

A teenager from Bradford was tragically killed last week after the car he was travelling in collided with a wall and telegraph pole in Bradford. Saliq Amjad Malik was taken to Leeds General Infirmary after the collision on Giplin Street, Barkerend, but sadly died of his injuries later in the same day. The Hanson Academy pupil had been a passenger in a Volkswagen Golf when it ploughed into a wall on Friday 12th September. A 17-year-old boy, believed to be the driver, was arrested by police earlier this week on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving whilst another 15-year-old remains in hospital with serious injuries. Tributes have been left at the site of the crash throughout the past week with flowers, soft toys and notes of condolences placed by the fallen telegraph pole. One message read: “Can’t actually believe what has happened. I’m gonna miss you so much you were like one of my big brothers.

TRIBUTES: Flowers, letters and soft toys have been placed at the site in memory of the teenager

“I will never forget you and all the memories, you never failed to put a smile on my face.” Local councillor, Faisal Khan, of Bradford Moor, added his sympathies for the family. “Condolences obviously go to the family,” he said. “I have seen his dad and he is obviously devastated about the loss of his son but he must continue with his life. “No parent wants to see their child go before them so it is a really

difficult time for all of Saliq’s relatives.” Cllr Khan added that the tragic fatality should now also act as a reminder to other youths about the importance of road safety. “The message I would say to the young people out there driving is to stay safe on the roads and don’t get in the car if you aren’t going to be.” Meanwhile investigations into the crash are continuing with West Yorkshire Police appealing for the

public’s help in identifying the cause of the crash. PC Andrew McManus, of the Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “A young boy has tragically lost his life as a result of this collision, so I am appealing to the occupants of this purple or maroon Peugeot car or anyone else who might have witnessed the movements of the Golf to contact myself or Sergeant 4756 Quinn at the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101.”

Smuggler with 12 kilos of Class A drugs detained 32 years for ‘twisted’ killer

DRUGS: Adeem Maqbool attempted to smuggle the heroin through Heathrow airport last weekend

A Batley resident has been charged with drug smuggling after he was found to be carrying an estimated 12kg of heroin at Heathrow Airport. 37-year-old Adeem Maqbool was stopped at Terminal 2 after arriving at the airport on a flight from Pakistan, via Istanbul, on Sunday 21st September. The drugs were located in a large holdall and were discovered by officers during checks of the flight’s luggage. Tests are now being carried out on the substance to determine the purity and value which will be worth millions of The new police base for neighbourhood officers serving the centre of Leeds has been officially opened by West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner. Mark Burns-Williamson visited Leeds Central Police Station, in Park Street, to see first-hand how the new facility has been created from the redevelopment of part of the building that previously housed the Leeds Bridewell, which is no longer used as a custody suite. As well as providing a base for the City Neighbourhood Policing Team, the building includes a public enquiry counter which opens every day from 8am to 10pm. The station went operational on 7th August when officers from the City NPT moved from Millgarth Police Station, which has been sold to Leeds City Council and will soon be demolished to make way for the new Victoria Gate development. Mr Burns-Williamson said: “I am delighted to officially open this new facility so that the public can access officers and advice in the centre of Leeds. OPEN: Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire, Mark BurnsWilliamson, officially opened the building earlier this week

pounds. Maqbool, of West Street, Batley, appeared at the Uxbridge Magistrates Court on Wednesday 24th September charged with the attempted importation of a Class A drug. He was remanded in custody and will remain so until he is next due in court on 9th October at Isleworth Crown Court. Following the seizure by Border Force Officials, the investigation and prosecution are being carried out by the National Crime Agency. Marc Owen, Border Force

Heathrow director, said: “Border Force officers like those who made this seizure play a crucial role in protecting the UK from illegal drugs and other contraband. “Working with law enforcement colleagues like the NCA we are determined to do all we can to prevent drug trafficking and put those responsible behind bars.” Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to smuggling should call on 0800 59 5000.

Moving in on crime Leeds central Police Station officially opens

“This is the second facility I have opened recently within local communities, the other being in Pontefract, and this demonstrates my commitment and support to protecting Neighbourhood Policing Teams, the ethos being that wherever possible the NPT's and our partners are based in the areas they are directly serving which was always the long term vision. “This Leeds base will provide the city and local community direct contact with their Neighbourhood Policing Team ensuring good visibility in making sure our communities are safer and feel safer.’’ Chief Superintendent Paul

Money, Leeds District Commander, said: “With the recent move to our new headquarters at Elland Road and the closure of Millgarth, we felt it was really important to continue to have a police station in the heart of the city. “The former Leeds Bridewell was identified as a suitable place that could be converted at minimal cost to provide a central base for the neighbourhood officers that serve the area along with an accessible public enquiry counter. “In the six weeks that the team has been operating from the new station it has continued to be very much business as usual in policing the city centre.”

A man from Leeds has been handed a life sentence for the murder of Craig Pierre earlier this year. Anthony Micah Pyke, 32, shot the victim in the leg in a woodland area off Gledhow Valley Road in Leeds , leaving him to bleed to death down an embankment. Pyke was found guilty of murder and two counts of kidnap at Leeds Crown Court earlier this week and sentenced to 32 years in prison. After the case, Det Chief Insp Jim Dunkerley, of West Yorkshire Police Protective Services Crime, said: “Craig was shot in cold blood and left to die alone in the woods in an appalling act of violence MURDERER: Anthony Micah Pyke shot Craig Pierre after he unwittingly smoked drugs that shows Pyke to be which were supposed to be sold as part of the someone who is utterly prior’s illegal drug dealing network devoid of humanity. “Craig’s death was and are continuing to go through completely unnecessary. Run by business partners, Nazura Mutvalli and Yusuf Chothia, Orchid represents a dream come true for the prior who has long had a ambition to open the site. “A few years ago I was made redundant from my job with a major pharmaceutical company and it was then that I decided to follow up on my dream and open this beautiful venue,” Nazura said. “I can now look upon it as a ‘blessing in disguise’ because seeing this place now, in all its glory, really does make you realise that all the hard work was worthwhile.” More than eight months were spent redeveloping the building from a run-down site to the elegant setting it is today. Extensions were brought in, whilst a complete overhaul of the interior allowed for spaces to open up and serve as three floors of attainable space, including an overlooking mezzanine. The first floor is ideal for corporate events, with a spacious hall equipped with all the latest technologies, from sound systems to projectors. “There is nowhere else quite like Orchid in Dewsbury or the surrounding area,” Nazura continued. “This size and this exclusivity has never been seen around here so we are really excited about welcoming guests for a long, long time. “We have already hosted a number of events and the feedback has been amazing.” Orchid certainly has the space, facilities and elegance to host any event, the only thing missing now, is you.

Seeking Justice A

n important decision of the Supreme Court has opened the door to enable access to justice for religious institutions involved in disputes. The case of Shergill and Others –v- Khaira and others concerned the trusteeship and governance of two Sikh temples (Gurdwaras). Specifically, the power to appoint and remove Trustees of those Gurdwaras and the associated powers of governance conferred by the Constitution of the Charity. The Defendants did not accept that the spiritual leader of their Sikh sect was the acknowledged successor of the previous spiritual leader who had died. The Defendants also disputed the meaning and validity of a deed granting the Third Holy Saint the power to dismiss and appoint trustees. A dispute arose over the validity of the Third Holy Saint’s appointment and his subsequent directions leading to a dispute over the control of the Charity’s assets. The Third Holy Saint was joined by eight other claimants in seeking from the Court declarations and injunctions in order to regain their control and trusteeship over the Gurdwaras from the Defendants. In 2011, the Birmingham High Court dismissed an application by the Defendants to strike out the proceedings on the grounds of non justiciability (the Court’s ability to adjudicate a dispute, namely the Court’s ability to adjudicate on issues of religious doctrine, belief and practice as the Courts in the UK are secular and do not concern themselves with such issues). That decision was appealed to the Court of Appeal who handed down a Judgment to the effect that the Appeal would be allowed and the action be permanently stayed as the proceedings raised non justiciable issues of religious belief, doctrine or practice. The case was appealed to the Supreme Court to consider whether the Court of Appeal were correct in deciding that the action should be stayed. The Supreme Court held that the dispute was justiciable and capable of being

determined by the Court. The Court found that disputes regarding the ownership, possession and control of property held on trust for religious purposes by trustees can be determined even where that requires determination of religious issues provided that those issues are capable of objective assessment and necessary to decide the disputed legal rights. The Court confirmed that the English courts cannot determine disputes about the truth or otherwise of religious beliefs or the validity of rights and rituals where these are not matters of law capable of proof. However, issues concerning civil rights or interests or reviewable questions of public law are capable of being objectively ascertained. In this case, the issue was the interpretation of a trust for religious purposes, which falls within the Court’s jurisdiction and can therefore be determined. The matter will now be remitted back to the High Court for a decision on the substantive claim. Blacks were previously instructed by the Claimants in this matter at the Court of Appeal stage and successfully secured permission to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Pound getting stronger against euro Britons heading to the continent for autumn breaks will benefit from a strengthening of the pound against the euro. Sterling dipped on uncertainty surrounding the Scottish referendum, but has now climbed again and, at around 1.28 to the pound, is providing 8% more spending power for Britons than this time last year. Highlighting the favourable rate today, foreign exchange company Travelex said Britons can now get £36 more when exchanging £500 into euros than they would have got 12 months ago. David Swann of Travelex said: "We saw consistent growth of the pound in early 2014, which was unsettled this month due to consumers' concerns over the Scottish referendum and what implications it would have on currency. "It's reassuring to see the pound back on track - no doubt also helped by the Bank of England's moves towards increasing interest rates."

India's 100 richest people are for the first time all billionaires, according to an annual Forbes survey released Thursday, nearly double the number from five years ago. The country's top earners were also worth a third more combined than last year as Indian stock markets went on a roll with the election of the new right-wing government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Industrialist Mukesh Ambani topped the list for an eighth straight year with his $23.6-billion fortune, Forbes India said on its website. The wealth of Ambani, chairman of conglomerate Reliance Industries, climbed by $2.6 billion from last year. The combined worth of the 100 richest Indians now totals $346 billion, Forbes said, an increase of a third on 2013 fuelled by stock prices up nearly 30 percent since January. The figures come amid disquiet in India about a yawning divide between the elite and burgeoning middle classes and hundreds of millions still living in deep poverty. While India's mega-rich host multi-million-dollar weddings for their children, host lavish parties, fly private jets and have armies of servants, the poor often toil in the shadows of mansions and office skyscrapers, scavenging and living in disease-infested slums with no sanitation. The minimum sum to qualify for the Forbes list was $1 billion for the first time, up from $635 billion in 2013. India's 100 billionaires this year is nearly double the 52 in recorded in 2009 but the number is still lower than rival emerging market giant China's 152 billionaires, according to a Forbes list released in March. Indian pharmaceutical magnate Dilip Shanghvi, whose wealth grew by $4.1 billion to $18 billion, is the new number two on the list, displacing Londonbased steel baron Lakshmi Mittal. The Indian-born magnate slipped to fifth place at $15.8 billion. Shanghvi's wealth surged after his Sun Pharmaceuticals bought rival generic giant Ranbaxy Laboratories (BSE: RANBAXY.BO - news) from Japan's Daiichi Sankyo for $4 billion in April, Forbes said.

FORBES: London-based steel baron Lakshmi Mittal slipped to fifth place at $15.8 billion

The pharmaceutical sector is one of India's biggest wealth generators, with over a fifth of the 100 richest holding assets in the drugs and health care sectors, Forbes said. Moving up to third place was Azim Premji, chief of outsourcing giant Wipro (BSE: WIPRO.BO - news) , whose fortune climbed by $4.1 billion to $18 billion. - 'Gloom to boom' The rise in India's share prices has vastly outpaced economy expansion running at under six percent, well below near double-digit levels of a few years ago. India's mood has "moved very quickly from gloom to boom" under the new government which took office in May, said Naazneen Karmali, India editor of Forbes Asia. "The new federal government's mandate for change has sparked euphoria in the stock market, causing a seismic shift in Indian wealth this year," Karmali added. Tycoon Vijay Mallya, known as the "King of Good Times", fell off India's most wealthy list, engulfed by massive debts

of his grounded carrier Kingfisher Airlines, named after his beer brand. The flamboyant Mallya has been declared a "wilful defaulter" by creditors -someone who is able but unwilling to pay. Mallya, who owes over $1 billion to a consortium of state-run banks, is chairman of United Spirits, controlled by global liquor giant Diageo (LSE: DGE.L - news) . Mallya was in 84th spot with $800 million on the wealth-tracking list last year. The Indian businessman who made the biggest jump was ports magnate Gautam Adani, who hails from Gujarat, the same state as Modi, and who is seen as close to the Indian leader. Adani leapt 11 spots in the wealth stakes to number 11 as shares of his companies climbed around election time. India's richest are still significantly worse off than the world's wealthiest man, Microsoft (NasdaqGS: MSFT - news) co-founder Bill Gates, who is worth an estimated $76 billion.

House prices in England and Wales stagnate Asking prices for houses in England and Wales flatlined in September for the first time in 19 months, according to a survey on Friday that showed a small fall in prices in London. Property data company Hometrack said house prices stagnated in September for the first time since January 2013, after rising 0.1 percent in each of the previous two months. London was the only region in which house prices fell - by 0.1 percent - with fewer than 1 percent of London postcode districts reporting higher prices. The survey is the latest sign that Britain's housing market has cooled after strong house price growth in the first half of this year, hit in part by tougher checks on mortgage applicants and more sellers putting their properties on the market. "While this slowdown can be attributed partly to seasonal factors – including a slight hangover from a slow August – it's clear that agents are wary about the direction of the market as a result of weaker demand and lower sales volumes," said Richard Donnell, Hometrack's director of research. He said speculation about an interest rate rise by the Bank of England, warnings about a house price bubble and this month's Scottish independence referendum might have fanned uncertainty in the market. Earlier this week, industry data showed British banks approved the smallest number of home loans in a year during August, while house price growth slowed sharply according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and mortgage lender Halifax.

Haldi power! New scientific research finds turmeric link to brain cell repair

National

Although us South Asian’s have known for centuries about the healing properties of the yellow spice turmeric, scientists now say that it may hold the key to repairing the brains of people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. In laboratory tests, aromatic turmerone promoted the proliferation of brain stem cells and their development into neurons. The bio-active compound could help scientists develop treatments for conditions in which brain cells are lost, including Alzheimer's and stroke, it is claimed. Lead researcher Dr Adele Rueger, from the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine in Julich, Germany, said: "While several substances have been described to promote stem cell proliferation in the brain, fewer drugs additionally promote the differentiation of stem cells into neurons, which constitutes a major goal in regenerative medicine. "Our findings on aromatic turmerone take us one step closer to achieving this goal." The scientists examined the effect of aromatic turmerone on endogenous neutral stem cells (NSCs) found within adult brains. NSCs go on to develop into neurons, and play an important role in recovery from neurodegenerative diseases. At certain concentrations, the turmeric compound boosted the proliferation of rat foetal NSCs by up to 80%, and increased the speed at which they matured. In living rats, injections of aromatic turmerone led to the expansion of two key brain regions, the

subventricular zone (SVZ) and hippocampus. Both are sites in adult mammalian brains where neurogenisis - the growth of new neurons - is known to occur. The findings are published in the online journal Stem Cell Research & Therapy. Aromatic turmerone is the lesserstudied of two major bio-active compounds in turmeric. The second, curcumin, is a well known antiinflammatory agent and reputed to have anti-cancer properties. Dr Laura Phipps, from Alzheimer's Research UK, said: "This early-stage study highlights the effects of aromatic turmerone in rat brains, but the findings are a long way from determining whether this compound could help fight diseases like Alzheimer's. "It's not clear whether the results of this research would translate to people, or whether the ability to generate new brain cells in this way would benefit people with Alzheimer's disease. We'd need to see further studies to fully understand this compound's effects in the context of a complex disease like Alzheimer's, and until then people shouldn't take this as a sign to stock up on supplies of turmeric for the spice rack. "The death of brain cells is a key feature of Alzheimer's, and investment in research is crucial to understand how this cell death occurs and how to intervene. It takes many years for fundamental research such as this to be translated into new treatments, and for the best chance of success we need to see a range of approaches being taken."

Emergency landing

Parliament recalled as air strikes become possibility

A Boeing Dreamliner flying from Chicago to Poland with 248 passengers on board made an emergency landing at Scotland's Glasgow airport on Friday after crew received an alert from the fire protection system in the baggage hold. The Polish state airline LOT plane was cleared as safe and the passengers allowed to disembark, an airport spokesman said. More checks on the fire alarm were being carried out. “We are aware of the LOT diversion of a 787 into Glasgow,” a Boeing spokesman said in statement emailed to Reuters. “We are working with our customer to assess the situation. At this time we have no further details.” Any findings of technical fault would add to the problems experienced by the 787 Dreamliner, Boeing's estimated $32 billion bet on new technology, which entered commercial service three years ago. Last year, the global fleet was grounded for three months from January to April after two lithium-ion batteries burned out in two incidents in Japan and the United States. Emergency services met the LOT plane, which had been heading for Warsaw, at 9:35am, Glasgow airport said. Other traffic at the airport was not affected.

In an interview with magazine The Spectator, British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said that Cameron has ‘little time for the idea that Britain should stay out of the fight’. “He seems morally offended at the suggestion that we should leave it to other countries to deal with Islamic State and irritated at the failure of some to grasp that the struggle against Islamist extremism is 'Britain's business,” Fallon said. ARREST: Anjem Choudary was arrested on Thursday morning in relation to charges of encouraging terrorism

Radical preacher, Anjem Choudary, was one of several men detained by police in the early hours of Thursday morning, as part of an ongoing investigation into terrorism. All nine men were seized from different addresses in London, on suspicion of being a member of, or supporting, a banned organisation in the UK, a Metropolitan Police spokesperson said. Spicy Goodwill Ambassador

The United Nations program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) on Thursday named fashion designer and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham a goodwill ambassador. Beckham, who said she was inspired to help after a ‘life-changing’ visit to HIV clinics in South Africa, will focus on working toward ensuring that all children are born free from HIV and that children and women who are living with and affected by HIV have access to medicines and care, UNAIDS said. “It's taken me getting to 40 years old to realize I have a responsibility as a woman, as a mother, I have a voice that people will listen to,” she told a news conference at the United Nations on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. “I'm not going to sit here and pretend to know everything right now, I don't, I'm learning,” said Beckham, adding that she planned to take field trips to learn more about the problem and how she could help. Sub-Saharan Africa is the region hardest hit by HIV, with 24.7 million HIV-positive people in 2013. Women account for 58 percent of those with HIV in the region, which is also home to 85 percent of pregnant women with HIV, according to UNAIDS.

Galloway death threat

TARGET: Within the past month, George Galloway has now been physically assaulted and threatened

MP’s life threatened during rally Bradford’s Respect MP, George Galloway, claims he was told he was ‘going to face a bullet’ earlier this week after attending a prounion event in Scotland. The controversial politician had been invited to speak on behalf of pro-union campaigners who were hoping to see the country vote ‘no’ to a split from the UK, something which was eventually confirmed on Friday morning. During the rally on Monday in Glasgow, Mr Galloway was heckled by anti-union supporters with some protestors being escorted from the premises.

The local MP told the crowd of the threat during his speech, which came just days after being attacked in London. “In the last 30 minutes I have been told I am going to face a bullet,” he said. “I take these matters seriously because I am on painkilling drugs and a walking stick when I am not on stage following an attack in London.” Earlier this month, Mr Galloway was physically assaulted as he posed for pictures in the capital. A picture was shortly after uploaded onto social media showing the injuries suffered, which included severe

bruising to the body and head. 39-year-old Neil Masterson, of Campden Hill, Kensington, admitted the assault but denied his attack was religiously aggravated. It had been claimed that Masterson shouted about the holocaust during the attack, following on from the MP’s comments of Bradford whereby he labelled the city an ‘Anti-Israeli zone’. Masterson also admitted to the assault of another man, Mostafa Maroof, and appeared at Isleworth Court earlier this week. He was remanded in custody and will stand trial on 10th November.

Get ready Malaysia – here comes the British curry! Bradford-based founder of the World Curry Festival announces first destination for the event outside the UK

Having just celebrated its fifth anniversary, the World Curry Festival has just signed a deal to be taking the event to Malaysia – its first destination outside Yorkshire. The Honourable Dato' Haji Abdul Malik Kassim, the Malaysian State Minister for Religious Affairs and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs arrived in Yorkshire this week to sign an agreement with the founder of the World Curry Festival, Zulfi Karim. The Minister originally met Mr Karim earlier this year, when they got together to discuss the idea of promoting Malaysian food. He was blown away by the World Curry Festival concept, and flew back to the UK this week to do the deal. Bradford has been the UK curry capital for four-years running and therefore is befitting that the festival, which operates out of the heart of the city, from the Grade II listed Drummond Mills complex, will be taking British curry to Malaysia. The festival will be hosted in the state of Penang, on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Penang, which is often referred to as the "The Pearl of the Orient", is widely regarded as the food capital of Malaysia. Local businesses and students from Bradford will be travelling to Malaysia to participate in the festival between 30 January and 1 February 2015. It is a fantastic opportunity for Bradford and Yorkshire alike to showcase its talent to rest of the world. Commenting on the announcement, Zulfi Karim, Founder of the World Curry Festival, said: "It is an honour to be

The Minister also added: “We are delighted to confirm that Penang will be hosting the World Curry Festival 2015, as part of 6th Penang International Halal Expo & Conference, which will be held from 30th January to 1st February 2015. “Penang is Malaysia’s city of gastronomy and is known as the Pearl of the Orient. India’s satellite success scrutinised Business conglomerate says that a single trip to Mars is not enough for long-term success

Taliban gain ground

Hundreds of Taliban fighters have stormed a strategic district in an Afghan province southwest of the capital and are on the verge of capturing it after killing dozens of people and beheading some in days of fighting, officials said on Friday. The Ghazni provincial government has lost contact with police in the province's western district of Ajrestan, said Asadullah Safi, deputy police chief of the area. An army unit reported that fighting was raging late on Friday afternoon, another provincial official said. “If there is no urgent help from the central government, the district

will collapse,” Safi said earlier. The battle for Ajrestan illustrates the grave challenges facing Afghanistan's new president and the security forces in holding territory as foreign combat troops prepare to leave at the end of the year. No longer pinned down by U.S. air cover, Taliban fighters are attacking Afghan military posts in large numbers with the aim of taking and holding ground. Ghazni is on the main highway linking Kabul to southern Afghanistan, where the Taliban have been making advances in recent months.

Reaching the masses through radio

Twitter-savvy Prime Minister Narendra Modi is turning to the country's oldest radio station to make his voice heard even in the farthest Himalayan hamlets and most distant deserts. On 3rd October, Modi will go live on public service All India Radio (AIR) from New Delhi for about 50 minutes, in a pilot of a show he hopes will become a weekly opportunity to reach up to two-thirds of India's 1.2 billion people. The maiden radio broadcast, announced on the website mygov.in, will

be quickly translated into 24 Indian languages and 16 foreign ones. “We are still working on how to get everything arranged,” said a senior official at the radio station known for news broadcasts delivered in a cut-glass English accent. “None of the prime ministers in the last three decades have used our services in this manner.” Although eclipsed in recent years by satellite television, radio is still the main source of news and information for many Indians, particularly in rural areas.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he wants to expand India's 50-year-old space programme. The government has increased funding for space research by 50 percent to almost $1 billion this financial year. But the programme is still small, and the small number of launches limits the growth potential of private companies that supply them. Between 2007 and 2012, ISRO accomplished about half of its planned 60 missions, government data showed. The government cited "development complexity" as the reason for the delay in some missions. Some company executives and experts do not see that changing any time soon, with the absence of heavy rocket launchers, too few launch facilities and bureaucratic delays hampering growth.

Just one day after Afghanistan announced a unity government to end a lengthy and dangerous election crisis, doubts about its ability to survive, let alone thrive, are already surfacing. Afghanistan's international partners hailed Sunday's signing of the U.S.-brokered agreement that will make former finance minister Ashraf Ghani the country's next president. It will also create a powerful chief executive post that is expected to be filled or appointed by disgruntled runner-up Abdullah Abdullah, the exforeign minister who says large-scale vote-rigging cheated him of a victory.

One problem with Sunday's deal is that some key details about how the rivals will share power have been left vague, meaning the crux of the problem has not been addressed. “This government will be useless and will collapse soon,” said Bibi Hameeda Yousufi, a member of parliament from the southern province of Kandahar. The document signed by both men says that ‘the relationship between the President and the CEO cannot be described solely and entirely by this agreement’, specifying that it depends on the candidates agreeing on how to work together.

Al-Assad ‘must go’

Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani has warned that the U.S.-led fight against Islamic State militancy will not succeed as long as Syrian President Bashar al-Assad remains in power. U.S. and Arab forces have bombed Islamic State targets in northern and eastern Syria this week, following U.S. strikes on the al Qaeda splinter group in Iraq since early August. “We have to counter terrorism, yes. But I believe that the main cause of all this is the regime in Syria, and this regime should be punished,” Sheikh Tamim said in an interview with CNN

broadcast on Thursday. “If we think that we're going to get through the terrorist movements and leave those regimes doing what they - this regime especially, doing what he is doing - then terrorist movements will come back again,” he said, according to a transcript of the interview. Islamic State fighters have exploited the chaos of Syria's threeyear-old civil war, which pits Assad and his allies against mainly Sunni Muslim rebels and Islamist militants, to carve out territory in the country's eastern provinces.

Nine Japanese join IS

Nine Japanese nationals have joined Islamic State, Japan's former air force chief, Toshio Tamogami, quoted a senior Israeli government official as saying, but the government's top spokesman said on Friday it had not confirmed the information. Tamogami, now a senior official of a tiny new political party, said on his blog that Nissim Ben Shitrit, the director-general of Israel's foreign ministry, told him this month that nine Japanese had taken part in Islamic State. Asked about the possible participation of Japanese citizens in the militant group, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a regular news conference, “The government has not confirmed such information.” Tamogami told Reuters that no details besides the number of

Japanese participants were given to him in his meeting with Nissim Ben Shitrit, a former ambassador to Japan. “I don't know anything further,” Tamogami said. “He was tight-lipped. Tamogami's blog shows the meeting took place on Sept. 12 in Israel. About 1,000 recruits from a vast region stretching from India to the Pacific may have joined Islamic State to fight in Syria or Iraq. Asian

FREED: Abu Qatada will walk free after being acquitted of the terror charges dating back to the millenium

‘Not Guilty’ Radical cleric cleared of terror charges

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A cleric, once described by a judge as ‘Osama bin Laden’s right hand man in Europe’, has been cleared of all terror charges in a Jordanian court due to a lack of evidence. Abu Qatada had been facing charges of plotting to carry out terror-related attacks on Israelis and Americans during millenium celebrations in Jordan. In the same year, he was sentenced to spend 15 years in jail in absentia yet was finally acquitted of the charges on Wednesday this past week. After a lengthy battle to extradite the 53-yearBATTLE: Home Secretary, Theresa May, finally extradited Qatada last year after the UK spent more than £1.7m on sending him back to Jordan

old from the UK to Jordan, it was Home Secretary Theresa May who finally accomplished it after a total of £1.7m was spent on his case. Qatada was finally deported after an agreement was reached by the UK and Jordan which said that any evidence gathered against the father-of-five would not be used in a retrial. Despite the not guilty verdict, Home Office officials insisted

there was no question of him returning to the UK. A spokesman said: “Abu Qatada’s retrial in Jordan was made possible thanks to this government’s determination to successfully deport him from the UK to face the courts in his own country. “It is right that the due process of law has taken place in Jordan. The UK courts agreed that Abu Qatada posed a threat to national security in the UK, so we are pleased that we were able to remove him. “Abu Qatada remains subject to a deportation order and a United Nations travel ban. He is not coming back to the UK.” Meanhile, Mubaidin, one of Abu Qatada’s lawyers, said he had expected this decision and was happy to see his client’s name cleared of the charges. “There was no substantial evidence against him in the first place,” he said. “Abu Qatada wanted to come back for a fair trial in Jordan and we are thankful that Britain sent him back. No further charges stand against Abu Qatada. He will walk free today.” In June 2014, Qatada was also acquitted of a separate case dating back to 1999 which revolved around a foiled plan to attack an American school in Amman, Jordan.

Verma to strengthen US-Indian relations New ambassador to India nominated ahead of historic visit US President Barack Obama has nominated former State Department official, Richard Verma, as US ambassador to India, just ahead of Narendra Modi’s first visit to the White House. Verma would become the first IndianAmerican to do the job and has served previously as assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs at the State Department in the Obama administration between 2009 and 2011. He is currently one of the senior counsellors at Steptoe and Johnson law firm as well as the Albright Stonebridge Group, a business advisory company, led by former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Due to his close relationship with the Obama administration, Verma already has close ties with White House Chief of Staff, Denis McDonough, National Security Adviser, Susan Rice, and senior adviser, John Podesta. Khobragade was arrested and stripsearched in New York last year, an incident that took the US-India relationship to its lowest point in a decade. Modi is due to visit Washington at the end of the month for a trip aimed at revitalising ties and clearing the air. The new Indian Prime Minister was previously denied a visa to the United States in 2005 after Hindu mobs killed more than 1,000 people, most of them Muslims, in 2002 while he was chief minister of his home state of Gujarat. The United States sees India as a natural ally on a range of issues and in 2010, Obama declared the US-India relationship as ‘one of the defining partnerships of the 21st century,’ but added that ties have so far failed to live up to their full billing.

Muslims gather in Paris to denounce Islamic State ‘barbarism’

RALLY: People hold a placard reading ‘Tribute to Herve Gourdel’ during a demonstration outside Paris's main mosque called by Muslims groups to denounce the ‘barbarism’ of Islamic State

Hundreds of people gathered in Paris on Friday 26th September answering a call by Muslim leaders to denounce the "barbarism" of Islamic State militants, as flags across France flew at half-mast after the beheading of a French national. Imams and ordinary Muslims have rallied to condemn the execution of 55-year-old mountaineer Herve Gourdel this week by militants in Algeria with ties to the IS jihadists, as the country mourns the brutal murder. "This gathering is the strong and vibrant expression of our desire for national unity and of our unwavering will to live together," Dalil Boubakeur, head of the French Council of the Muslim Faith - an official representative for the country's roughly five million Muslims - told the gathering outside Paris's main mosque. "Islam is a religion of peace", he said, adding it "orders respect for life". Leading Muslim figures also signed a message published in French newspapers Friday condemning "atrocities committed in the name of a murderous ideology hiding behind the Islamic religion". "We are also the 'filthy French'," said the statement, referring to an epithet the Islamic State group has used.

The demonstration came as flags nationwide flew at half-mast to mourn Gourdel. The mountaineer was kidnapped on Sunday by Algerian group Jund al-Khilifa shortly after a chilling call by IS militants for Muslims to kill citizens from countries involved in a US-led coalition fighting the extremists, "especially the spiteful and filthy French". The threat sparked concern in France, and authorities have since strengthened security in public places and on transport. The foreign ministry also widened its vigilance alert for nationals abroad from around 30 countries earlier this week to some 40 nations -- including Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. France has nevertheless said it refuses to be cowed by IS threats. The government announced Thursday air strikes had been carried out in Iraq -- the second bombing raids in the space of a week. Fighter planes destroyed four hangars near Fallujah city, west of Baghdad, that "likely" contained weapons and other equipment, a military source said. Paris opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq but was one of the first to sign up for an active role in the USled campaign against the IS group. It has six Rafale fighter jets based

in the United Arab Emirates, carrying out the strikes in Iraq. While it has pledged to push forward with the air strikes, Paris has stressed it will not deploy ground troops, nor will it expand operations to Syria, as the United States has done. But the presidency announced France would "continue and intensify its support for Syrian opposition forces who are fighting jihadist groups". Back in the southern Alpine village of Saint-Martin-Vesubie, where Gourdel worked as a mountain guide, locals, school students and other guides marched Thursday evening in memory of a man they described as hugely curious about the world. More than 800 people, including three imams, took part in the march past his office, stopping at times to light candles or lay flowers down. "Herve was a humanist full of an overwhelming passion for the mountain that illuminated his life," fellow guides said in a joint statement. The mountaineer was kidnapped while hiking in a national park in eastern Algeria that was once a magnet for tourists but later became a sanctuary for Islamists. A passionate photographer, Gourdel liked going off the beaten track, his friends have said.

“This gathering is the strong and vibrant expression of our desire for national unity and of our unwavering will to live together.”

The group, featuring three men and three women, were dancing to Pharrell William’s hit song ‘Happy’ – mimicking the dances in the official music video. Salman Khan's case adjourned

Entertainment

Entertainment

THE LATEST ENTERTAINMENT AND CELEBRITY NEWS FROM BOLLYWOOD & HOLLYWOOD

The trial in the hit-and-run case involving actor Salman Khan some twelve years ago has been deferred again after the court was informed that his lawyer was unwell. On 28th September, 2002, the actor's car had allegedly rammed into a bakery, killing one person and injuring four others who were sleeping on the pavement outside. The trial, which has dragged along over the years, has seen repeated adjournments and some ‘missing’ documents which have now been traced and submitted in the court. The missing documents, it transpires, had been 63 original witness statements and case diaries, which had been in police custody. However, the documents were eventually found lying at a police station after a police chief had instituted an inquiry into the lapse. So far, 11 witnesses have deposed in the case. The sessions court had on 5th December last year ordered a fresh trial in the case on the ground that witnesses had not been examined in the context of aggravated charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This was invoked against the actor by a magisterial court midway through the hearing.

The actor has earlier been tried by a magistrate for a lesser offence of causing death by negligence, which entailed an imprisonment of two years, while the charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder attracts a 10-year sentence. The magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses, had ruled that a case of culpable homicide was made out against the actor and referred it to the sessions court. The trial continues on 9th October.

Magical music composer A R Rahman is getting ready to go into film production, it seems. Though at the moment he’s not willing to give away too many details about the film that he will produce, he has said that it will be a Hindi production because it's a North Indian storyline. "My first film production is almost in place. This is something I wanted to do for some time now. But my other commitments didn't allow me to," he said. Rahman says he needed to create his own cinema to

My own creative vision gets submerged in the larger picture. “Producing a film will give me the platform I needed for my music. “In fact producing music videos was also a preparation for film production, as they gave me a chance to express my music in the visual terms that I wanted." Rahman singles out Vishal Bhardwaj for making the transition from music to filmmaking. “Vishal is able to express his music in cinema, which is the transition that I am looking at." At the moment, though, Rahman is not looking at film direction. "That vocation needs undivided attention. “Just like I can't do songs for two films at the same time, I can't direct until I stop doing everything else. I am going to get directors who can execute my vision."

Shahid Kapoor wants 'Kaminey 2'

Shahid Kapoor's ‘Haider’ with Vishal Bhardwaj is due to release, but the actor has recently said out loud how he wishes that the filmmaker should make ‘Kaminey 2’ with him. Released in 2009, ‘Kaminey’ starred Shahid in a double role and for which he won accolades for his performance from all quarters. Though its been whispered that if ‘Kaminey 2’ was to happen, Shahid most definitely would be part of the film, it seems apparent that Mr Kapoor is eager to send Vishal Bhardwaj a loud and clear message. "I would be very happy if 'Kaminey 2' happens," said 33-year-old Shahid, speaking to reporters. "I had an amazing experience with Vishal sir working on 'Kaminey' and now 'Haider'. “I just hope he casts me in his next film and I really hope that this “next” film is 'Kaminey 2'," In fact, it seems that Bhardwaj has already locked a story but the story line is strictly under wraps for now. Pakistani actor Fawad Khan has been receiving quite a bit of attention from the Indian audience post the release of his film ‘Khoobsurat’ alongside Sonam Kapoor. Though currently the actor is back home in Pakistan, we hear that he has been signed on by Akshat Verma, who earlier wrote the film Delhi Belly, for his directorial debut. Said to be an intense drama with comic touches, the film will be produced by UTV, which also produced Khoobsurat. Sources close to the production house confirmed that Fawad has been approached for the project, and that talks were being finalised. The untitled project that is yet to lock on the lead actress is expected to go on floors by the end of the year.

New Mercedes-AMG C63 all set to evolve the equation of power, performance and agility By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

With a new name, new engine, new technology, same purpose – succeeding the most popular AMG model in its history, the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 is set to evolve the formula – with even greater power, performance, agility and focus than ever before. Using the 205 series aluminium and steel chassis structure as its basis, the new C 63 adds an all-new 4.0-litre biturbo engine to endow it with phenomenal performance while unique, three-stage adjustable dampers and a bespoke steering setup. The technology applied to the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 is focussed on enhancing the performance of the car – to make it as exhilarating as possible yet viable to be used every day. The dynamic engine mounts fitted to the C 63 are a good example. They reduce unwanted vibration from the engine and gearbox by softening during normal driving conditions – when greater agility is required, they stiffen to improve responses through

the speed-sensitive, electromechanical steering system and limit unwanted movement in the drivetrain. Every C 63 is fitted with 245/40 R18 (front) and 265/40 R18 (rear) tyres while the ‘S’ model gains 245/35 R19 (front) and 265/35 R19 (rear) tyres. A new braking system uses 390 mm discs at the front and 360 mm at the rear with the option of enhanced ceramic discs available for track-orientated driving. At the heart of any AMG is its handbuilt engine. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 uses the M177 engine – a sister unit to the M178 found in the new Mercedes-AMG GT. It displaces 3,982 cc and is equipped with twin turbochargers neatly packaged in the ‘V’ of the cylinder banks and cooled via a special duct built in the bonnet of the car. The C 63 produces 476 hp and, in C 63 S guise, 510 hp. It’s nearly a third more efficient than the engine it replaces yet, in ‘S’ form, produces more power and emits less CO2 – now from 192 g/km. A heavily revised version of the AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed transmission features on the C 63 - now with significantly quicker shift times to improve responses.

Ahead of the 2014 Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris, Honda has released images and details of several enhancements across the 2015 Swindon-built Civic model range and the launch of the new Civic Sport derivative. Based on the Civic hatchback, and powered by the 1.6-litre, 120 PS diesel engine or the 1.8-litre, 142 PS petrol engine, it features a colour-coded rear spoiler and 17-inch alloy wheels unique to the Sport derivative. In addition, the Civic Sport echoes the striking design of the forthcoming Type R, with a new front bumper featuring a lower grille mesh and a black roof lining for the cabin. Each model in the 2015 Civic range features Honda’s City Brake Active (CTBA) system as standard specifically designed to help avoid or mitigate low speed accidents. The system uses radar technology to scan the road ahead, automatically applying the brakes if an imminent risk

of collision is detected and is engineered to operate at speeds below 30 km/h. Both the Civic and Civic Tourer benefit from a new front exterior design, providing a new sporty outlook for the model featuring new headlamps with integrated daytime running lights and a new sleek front bumper. The Civic hatchback also features a new rear bumper, side skirts, a rear spoiler finished in black, and LED rear combination lamps. These aesthetic enhancements combine nicely with the class-leading interior space for which the range is renowned. The Civic’s 477-litre and Civic Tourer’s 624-litre boot capacity remains the best in their respective segments. The 2015 Civic range will also

premiere the all-new Honda Connect in-car audio and information system. Honda Connect offers convenience and connectivity whilst on the road, with key features including; AM/FM, DAB and Internet Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, internet browsing, satellite navigation and rear-view parking camera. Infiniti presents Q80 Inspiration: Infiniti’s vision of categorybreaking, supreme luxurious driving; a top-of-the-line four-seat fastback that rises above the crowd. It’s an audacious and elegant step forward for Infiniti as a global player; designed to shake up the status quo in the premium large four-door club; a no-compromise ambassador of driver-centric powertrain and onboard technologies. Next month in Paris, Infiniti will introduce the progressive Q80 Inspiration to the media and provide a glimpse into its high-performance and efficient hybrid-electric powertrain implementation as well as additional technologies. In profile, Infiniti Q80 Inspiration extends to 5052 millimetres (198.9 inches) with a long wheelbase of 3103 mm (122.2 in) framed by custom 22-inch five-dual-spoke lightweight alloys. It strikes an imposing stance with its width of 2027 mm (79.8 in) and height of 1350 mm (53.1 in). The Q80 Inspiration’s expansive, edgy, sensual interpretation of the Infiniti brand really makes a statement. There are no side-door

mirrors to break up the aesthetics of the unmistakable profile, the full roof length of the teardrop passenger greenhouse is accentuated by lightweight acoustic glass, and its doors open portal style which allows the stunning cabin to be fully on display while driver and passengers step in and out with ease. A concept as impactful as Q80 Inspiration is set to push boundaries in more ways than through the beauty of its attention-grabbing skin. The cabin is able to bring together the four occupants in a highly stylised and personalised ambiance of the highest quality. Earmarked for an advanced adaptive suspension, the light and rigid chassis combines with the acoustic glass all around and additional sound deadening to promise a driving and ride experience among the very best. A design and technological highlight to which Infiniti’s four worldwide design studios will refer regularly in coming years, the Q80 Inspiration four-door fastback is to be taken as clear intent to have an entry into the newly defined premium fastback segment.

Faster, greener, leaner meaner New Mercedes-AMG C63 all set to evolve the equation of power, performance and agility Continued from page 89 Matching the changes under the skin are extensive changes to the appearance of the car – both outside and in. New front bumpers with deep airdams to feed the intercoolers are joined by the unique AMG grille and a new bonnet with subtle power domes. Unique, wider front wings (to clear the wider front track) feature subtle ‘V8 biturbo’ badges above a set of similarly discreet sill extensions. The rear bumper is also new, designed to house the new quad exhaust pipes below a small wing mounted on the bootlid and above the tailgate glass on the Estate.

Inside, the changes are immediately apparent, with deep, contoured seats set behind a small, unique AMG wheel and recalibrated AMG dials. The option of AMG sports seats can be specified along with a range of different leather treatments and trim finishes – from piano black to carbon and aluminium. The Mercedes-AMG C 63 Saloon and Estate are both available to order in the UK from next month, with prices and specifications set to be announced when ordering opens. First deliveries are expected to take place in Spring 2015.

‘Hidden Resistance’ to black managers Anti-racism leader calls for greater access to management positions

DISAPPOINTED: Arun Kang, chief executive of Sporting Equals, labelled the figures a scandal and said he would back a move such as the introduction of the ‘Rooney rule’

The head of one of England’s leading NGO’s, dedicated to supporting diversity in sport, has said there should be at least nine times as many black managers in the top four divisions of football. Arun Kang, Chief Executive of Sporting Equals, is the latest stakeholder to have his say on the publicised topic, highlighting the misrepresentation of black or minority ethnic coaches in the sport. From the Premier League through to League Two there are only two black managers, Huddersfield’s Chris Powell and Carlisle’s Keith Curle. Earlier this week, the Professional Footballers' Association chief executive, Gordon Taylor, said the stats make for a worrying read, saying there was a ‘hidden resistance’ in regard to BME managers in

EMPLOYED: Chris Powell and Keith Curle (inset) are England’s only two black managers currently coaching one of the country’s top 92 clubs

football. Responding to the comments, Kang said the current statistics are a ‘scandal’ and action must be taken to address them. He said: “The BME population now stands at 20 per cent in England so all things being equal there should be 18 black managers in the Premier and Football League. “It’s now been over 30 years since BME players have been competing on the field but off the field we've seen very little progress in black managers coming up through the system. “I think it’s now got to the stage where we need to consider positive action measures such as the so called ‘Rooney rule’.” The ‘Rooney Rule’, named after Dan Rooney, chairman of the NFL’s Diversity Committee in the US, currently requires every NFL team to interview one BME individual for head coaching or senior football operation opportunities that become available This rule was also suggested by Taylor in previous months and he said he was disappointed that the legislation wasn’t brought up during the football league’s latest AGM despite reassurances from

chairman, Greg Clarke. An event is now set to take place at the House of Lord’s on 20th November, hosted by Lord Faulkner, looking at the topic with senior members of the PFA attending. Kang added: “The event will be used to publicise our Leaderboard report which shows that only three per cent of coaches across all sports are from BME backgrounds. So sadly the problem is not just confined to football.” Current statistics provided by the PFA state that 18 per cent of those people currently completing their coaching courses are from BME backgrounds. RESISTANCE: PFA Chief, Gordon Taylor, says there was a hidden resistance against hiring BME managers

BOXER GEORGE GETS BACK INTO THE GROOVE AS HE WINS THE EUROPEAN SUPER-MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE George Groves proves he has courage and heart after a previous crushing knockout defeat by Carl Froch in Wembley

By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

The sport of boxing sometimes produces boxers that the British public love to hate and this is usually because the boxer has tendency to display arrogance and sometimes disrespect towards his opponents. There are many boxers that fall into this category of being in a love hate relationship with the British public and one such boxer is George Groves. I recall the two epic boxing battles that Groves had with British world champion Carl Froch. Groves had been on the verge of winning against Froch on both occasions they fought, but on the first the fight was controversially stopped by the referee and then in the rematch he was convincingly knocked out. However the hate towards Groves by the British public was due to his antics outside the ring and in the build up to the fights against Froch as he was seen to disrespect the more senior and established Froch and then gave him little respect for his previous boxing achievements. The phrase of “respect is not given, you have to earn it” applied to the Groves fight against Froch because even though Groves entered the ring in that bout as the most hated with a number of boos, he then left the ring to cheers and applause acknowledging his boxing ability and effort against Froch. Groves has earned his “boxing stripes” and recognition the hard way and on Saturday showed his grit and metal to come back in his first fight after a huge loss and claim the European super-middleweight title against the limited but durable champion Christopher Rebrasse. Groves returned to Wembley for his fight against Rebrasse that was the scene of his previous defeat and he must have faced his demons in the ring that night as he remembered the time and place where it all went wrong and he was knocked out semi unconscious by Froch. Groves started the boxing bout against Rebrasse cagily and

lacked his normal boxing agility, but soon proved all the doubters wrong as he started to gain confidence and winning the fight. The Groves boxing display against Rebrasse would have been more convincing had he won the fight via knockout and had he been dominant for the whole duration of the fight but a majority decision was enough to give him my personal seal of approval and confirm to me that the nicknamed “Saint Groves” is back and ready for another shot at the world title. Groves told Carl Froch after the Rebrasse win that he would like to be given another opportunity to fight him, but Froch has made it clear that he has no plans to fight Groves and believes that the two defeats he inflicted on him proves that he (Froch) is the better fighter and had it been a previous Groves win only then would the third fight have taken place. I personally support Froch’s decision not to fight Groves and would personally like to see Groves win against a foreign World Champion opponent and bring the world title back to the UK adding to the British list of current world champion fighters. The most probable next fight for Groves is more than likely going to be against American super-middleweight world champion Anthony Dirrell who is the current holder of the prestigious WBC world champion belt. In my opinion the fight for Groves against Dirrell will finally cement Groves place amongst the elite world champions as I fully expect Groves to win against Dirrell based on Dirrell’s previous boxing bout against Sakio Bika last month and recent, lack lustre boxing performances. In regards to Groves popularity then I must confess that previously I was one of them “Groves haters” who was very critical of Groves pre-fight verbal sparring matches against his opponents (especially Carl Froch) but Groves recent boxing courage and ability has converted me to become his supporter and proved that his arrogance can be mistaken for his confidence and selfbelief to win.
