Many have earned esteem for exporting sand to Arabia, but how many have taken curry to Asia? This year the World Curry Festival founded in Bradford the city which holds the title ‘Curry Capital of Britain’, will be doing just that when it transports some of it finest curry chefs and recipes to Malaysia. The World Curry Festival is set to premiere at the 6th Penang International Halal Expo and Conference between 30th January and 1st February 2015. Penang, an island situated on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is famous as a centre for food, and historically known as ‘The Pearl of Orient’. As part of the event, the World Curry Festival will also be hosting an exclusive gala dinner at the Eastern Oriental Hotel in George Town – a UNESCO world heritage site. Dignitaries and VIPs attending the exclusive black-tie dinner

include Penang’s State Governor, Chief Minister and Minister of Tourism and Culture, along with a host of international ambassadors, and representatives of the British High Commission. Zulfi Karim, founder of the World Curry Festival, has personally designed the menu for the gala dinner. Commenting on the theme for the evening, he said: “The World Curry Festival gala dinner in Malaysia will be dedicated to ‘gastrodiplomacy’ – a kind of ‘cultural diplomacy’. “We first fell in love with the phrase when the World Curry Festival 2014 was officially opened by Mathew Barzun, the US Ambassador to the UK. “Having such a high profile figure open last year’s event in Bradford inspired us to concentrate on bringing the world together through curry. “This is one of the festival’s main aims, and we are delighted our first venture outside of the

Pupil’s Park

Pupils from two local primary schools joined Leeds City Council officers, executive members and sponsors last week to see the culmination of a two-year project to create a multi-use facility at East End Park. Children who attend Victoria, Richmond Hill and All Saints Primary Schools took part in the Design a Healthy Park Project led by Leeds City Council with funding from, the council’s public health department, parks and countryside service and Veolia. As part of the project pupils worked in teams to develop ideas for a park which would help improve the health of the local community, and encourage people to be more active and healthy. School council members from Richmond Hill Primary School made a special visit to the park to see how the plans have been put into action.

Leeds is thriving

Leader of Leeds City Council, Cllr Keith Wakefield, has praised the recently released Cities Outlook 2015 Report which puts Leeds top of the list for creating new private sector jobs. Cllr Wakefield said: “It is a fantastic achievement for Leeds to have had the highest percentage increase of new private sector jobs of any of the core cities even outperforming London in 2012/13. “This is testament not only to the resilience of the Leeds economy in such testing times, but also the positive environment for growth which gives companies the confidence to invest here creating vital new jobs. “While this is very welcome, the report as a whole does highlight areas Leeds needs to improve such as inequality in our city and the need to reduce our levels of carbon emissions.”

Bradford’s Council for Mosques has said the Muslim community deserves an ‘apology’ from Britain’s community’s secretary, after a letter deemed to imply ‘Muslims are not part of British society’ was sent to Islamic leaders. Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, sent out 1,000 letters asking the leaders to ‘explain and demonstrate how faith in Islam can be part of British identity’. It was signed by Mr Pickles and community minister, Lord Ahmad, and sent out after the Paris attacks earlier this month. In response to the message, Bradford’s President for the Council for Mosques, Mohammed Rafiq Sehgal, said it seems Pickles believes Muslims are ‘solely to be blamed’ for terrorist acts. “Eric Pickles’ letter to the Islamic leadership is highly objectionable on several grounds,” a statement from Mr Sehgal read. “Inadvertently, it blames and targets the Muslim community. “The statement incorrectly implies that Muslims are not part of the British society and are at unease with it, hence, they need to do more to be inclusive. “We ask why the letter has only been sent to the Muslim leaders and not more widely to the leadership of other faiths and non faith communities. This clearly suggests that in Mr Pickle’s views Muslims are solely to be blamed for terrorists’ activities. “This is typical of the thinking amongst the Government ministers and the security agencies.” In the letter, Mr Pickles did say he was proud of the way the British Muslim community had responded to the Paris attacks earlier this month, yet added there was more work to be done in rooting out extremist behaviour. Mr Sehgal said the comments seemed to relate with many ‘right wing’ sentiments and ‘picked on’ Muslims. The statement continues: “Mr Eric Pickles and his partner in crime Lord Ahmad are guilty of overlooking the fact that for British Muslims Britain is their home and take the safety of their ‘home’

very seriously. “Therefore, for senior politicians to continuously pick on Muslims and blame them for the activities of terrorists who do not care for the faith of their victims, is unjustified and grossly out of context. “We ask Mr Pickles to publically apologise to the Muslim community for bringing this peaceful section of the British society into disrepute. Blaming Muslims may win Mr Pickles and his party some support from the right wing voters but it does not help good community relations.” Despite criticism from several faith leaders, Prime Minister David Cameron publically backed the letter. “Anyone who reads this letter - and I've read the letter - will see that what he is saying is that British Muslims make a great contribution to our country, that what is happening in terms of extremist terror has nothing to do with the true religion of Islam,” he said. “It's being perverted by a minority who have been radicalised. Ice Cube returns

The popular ice rink attraction returns to the square on Friday 23rd January until Sunday 22nd February 2015. The Ice Cube provides a real ice rink and a smaller nursery rink for budding skaters under eight years old. As well as the standard public sessions, dedicated accessible skating sessions will be provided every Thursday between 9am and 10am. Other skating sessions are also accessible to all, including wheelchair users, and customers can call in advance if they want to check how busy sessions are on the day or discuss any additional requirements or concerns.

A one-way system to ease congestion in Keighley Town Centre will go before the town’s Area Committee next week. A report to the Committee says that despite a number of minor interventions to improve traffic flow, a more radical approach to solve congestion in the town is needed. Bradford Council highway officers have come up with proposals for a clockwise one-way system using East Parade, Hanover Street and Cavendish Street. The system would also involve banning right turns into Bradford Road from Gresley Road and Low Mill Lane, and from Coney Lane into East Parade, creating new pedestrian crossings, introducing a 20mph speed limit and a number of other traffic management measures.

Pupils across Bradford have been ‘on hand’ to show their support for children in Peshawar this month as they helped create a giant piece of art in the city. Whilst finger painting at school may be considered a simple art lesson, the message behind Atlas Primary School’s pupils’ handprints is much more powerful. Last month, 145 people, including 133 pupils aged between eight and 18, lost their lives after a Taliban attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar, Pakistan. Images following the attack were broadcast around the world with vigils held in the UK and other countries for the innocent victims. The Bradford Community Solidarity Scroll, spearheaded by Arshad Ali, is a concept which has involved pupils across the city printing their hands as a sign of ‘support’ for those affected by the attack. On Wednesday 14th January, the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Mike Gibbons, and the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Elizabeth Sharp, visited Atlas Primary School, to see the progress of the giant piece of material. As well as being treated to some songs from the school’s choir, letters, which will be posted to Pakistan in the near future, and which were written by the school’s pupils, were also read out. Caroline Carr, headteacher at Atlas Primary School, said: “As a school we were all moved by the

news of the shooting when it occurred. “The thought of going to school in the morning and not coming back is something very hard to comprehend and is something that has affected parents and children at that school. “When Mr Ali spoke to us about this project, we were of course more than happy to support it, and send our condolences, thoughts and prayers to the people of Peshawar.” To conclude the Lord Mayor’s visit, Cllr Gibbons added his own handprint to the scroll and praised the initiative, and the children for supporting it. Mr Ali also explained how the whole concept was initially conjured up from his daughter’s simple request.

“It all began when my daughter, Yisbah, who actually used to be a pupil here at Atlas Primary School, asked me if she could send a card to the Peshawar school after hearing of what had happened,” he said. “From there, the project just kept getting bigger and bigger because more and more people wanted to put their name to it. “We finally decided to create the scroll to give the children and Bradford’s leaders a chance to pass on their respects. We are now hoping to send it over to the school.” Later this year, two dignitaries from Bradford are hoping to travel to Pakistan to deliver the scroll to the Army Public School, along with letters written by local school children.

Three huge dragonboats arrived in Bradford’s City Park on Tuesday as sign-ups for the largest dragonboat race in the North of England continued to come in. Teams are still invited to sign up for the unique race which will also be raising funds for the Lord Mayor of Bradford's Appeal. The event, to be held on the River Aire at Roberts Park in Saltaire on Saturday 9th May is open to young people aged 12 and over and schools have been invited to take part with teachers and pupils teaming up. Each team will consist of a maximum of 17 people - 16 paddlers and one drummer who will beat the time and a dragon boat instructor who will steer. ‘I’m not a celebrity, I’m a Muslim’

AUTHOR: Sahera Patel hopes her story will not only make people laugh but also help dispel some common myths surround her religion

When Sahera Patel began jotting down some of her life stories five years ago, the then-teacher was just rekindling an old passion of hers having completed an English degree at university in her youth. Fast forward to the present day and not only has the 40-year-old Dewsbury resident completed her scripture but now is the proud author of a fully published autobiography. ‘I’m not a celebrity, I’m a Muslim: one woman’s journey to a world of faith’ is a light-hearted read which talks about some of Sahera’s favourite memories from growing up on terrace streets to humorous stories from her early visits to mosques and even her own arranged marriage. “I think many people will be able to relate to stories in the book and hope it can make them laugh because it is relatable in so many ways,” she said. “A lot of people share similar experiences to mine when they were growing up such as having to juggle religious life with a nine-tofive job.” The memoir has also been written in hope of educating the wider society, whether it is people of Islamic faith or not, about some of the mistaken beliefs surrounding the religion. Sahera continued: “There are a lot of misconceptions in our society about Islam and what it teaches so I decided to try and tackle some of these issues in the book with tales of my own experiences,” she said. “Once I decided to look at it from a religious angle it began to give the

book a real purpose and it really started taking off. “Many people forget the difference between cultural and religious traditions and I have tried to dispel some of the myths which surround Islam for example when it comes to forced marriages.” The book was finally published for the first time last year after months of attempting to secure a publishing deal. Sahera says she approached up to 50 publishers with her book, and despite many compliments, she was told it was not marketable, with one publisher quoted as saying ‘to have an autobiography published you have to be a murderer or a celebrity’. Taking inspiration from this, the first time author says she decided to entitle her life story ‘I’m not a Celebrity, I’m a Muslim...’ and finally landed a jointcontract publishing deal. ‘I’m not a Celebrity, I’m a Muslim’ is available to be purchased now from Amazon and is hoped to be in book s t o r e s soon.

New Lord Mayor elect for Leeds

Councillor Judith Chapman has been confirmed as the Lord Mayor elect for 2015/2016. Announced this month by the current Lord Mayor of Leeds Cllr David Congreve, Cllr Chapman will, subject to approval from fellow councillors, officially become the 122nd person to hold the historic office following a special council meeting on May 21 2015. Married to Alan, with two grown up children Harriet and Ben, Judith, who has represented the Weetwood ward as a Liberal Democrat city councillor since 2006, was brought up in the Roundhay area of Leeds and currently lives in Chapel Allerton. During her time as a councillor, Judith has previously chaired the adult social care scrutiny board and currently the children’s and families scrutiny board.

Parking permit changes

Changes to the charges for residential parking permits are set to come into force on 1 April 2015. The changes were agreed at a cabinet meeting on 21 October 14 and are being introduced to assist in covering the costs of administering the schemes. The decision means that properties with one car will still be able to park for free but additional cars will be charged at £15 The specific details of the scheme are that the resident and visitor permits are being replaced with Specific and Open permits. The changes mean households can apply for one Open permit (which doesn’t include a registration number so can be used by residents or visitors) free of charge, and a second permit can be purchased at £15.

Youth lead the way in community cohesion project Young people from across Dewsbury had their brushes and brooms at the ready last weekend as they helped tidy a local residential home. Members of the Institute of Islamic Education, at the town’s Markaji Masjid, and youth from community group, Kumon Y’all, joined forces for a day of cleaning at the Walker Street Complex on Saturday 17th January. Despite rain and freezing conditions, the 12 volunteers, and their group leaders, gave up their own time to complete the work. For more than a year, members of the Kumon Y’all group have been working with the complex as a way of building up community and interfaith relations. Farook Yunus, project leader for the team, explained further how the relationship first began. “It was more than a year ago now when I was told that residents at this residential home had misconceived ideas on Islam and therefore viewed it in a negative light,” he said. “So what I decided to do was go to the home, with about a dozen kids from Kumon Y’all and attempt to change these ideas by talking to them.

Community clean up “After a somewhat hostile reception, we were soon just talking and laughing with the residents and have continued to work with them over the past 12 months.” As well as last week’s clean-up operation, the group have also been involved in gardening projects, cooking classes and pampering sessions for the residents. “Now when I go in, I am

always warmly greeted and I even get a big hug from some residents which is fantastic,” Farook said. “We started working with Walker Street a while back and as far I am concerned, we are a family. “The values family members have towards each other is to help, play and have fun together. That is all we are doing. And now we are growing the family by introducing new

organisations into our family to create a world of peace and harmony as is our mission.” Last weekend was the first time the Institute of Islamic education joined in with one of Kumon Y’all’s projects and after its success, Farook says it will not be the last. Molana Mahmood Sacha, a teacher from the institute, added: “On behalf of the Institute of Islamic

Education, I would like to take this opportunity to humbly thank the organisers for allowing us the opportunity to take part in this project. “It was an absolute pleasure to be amongst a united community, helping and supporting one another. “The smiling faces on the elderly people is something I cherish and made it all the more worthwhile.”

Greek hero arrives in Leeds

An exciting new exhibition celebrating one of Ancient Greeks’ most famous classical heroes is set to light up a popular Leeds museum next week. The timeless Athenian tragedy of ‘Herakles’, will be explored through a series of fascinating lithographs and etchings by New Zealand artist Marian Maguire from Friday 23rd January 2015 at Leeds City Museum. As part of the ‘Labours of Herakles’ display, the famous Euripides character, who is also known in the Roman world as ‘Hercules’, will be taken out of his ancient context and portrayed as a 19th century colonist in New Zealand by Marian, who is renowned for using the visual language of ancient Greek vase painting to examine the country’s history, and in-particular narratives concerning early European contact and colonisation. This is the first time that the collection has been shown anywhere in Europe, and in what is a great honour for the city, Leeds will be the first venue to host the exhibition as part of its European tour.

New year, new funding

Work to transform Halifax’s historic Piece Hall into a thriving visitor attraction has been given a major funding boost. The Piece Hall Trust is delighted to announce that the Garfield Weston Foundation has made a significant contribution of £250,000 towards the transformation project. Garfield Weston is a family-funded, grant-making trust which has been supporting UK charities for over 50 years. This valuable award will support the conservation of the Georgian Piece Hall in Halifax and the engagement of people in its history and exciting future at the centre of the community. The building work will include major improvements to visitor facilities, including modern granite seating, level access across the courtyard, customer lifts, enhanced lighting and a central space for heritage events, markets and activities. A number of new traders are also expected to ‘open shop’ once the development is complete.

Gun and knife wielding thieves leave family ‘numb with fear’

A Leeds family say they were ‘scared for their lives’ last week after a gang of armed robbers burst into their family home, threatening to cut off a relative’s hand with a machete if they didn’t receive ‘gold and cash’. 56-year-old Mohammed Farooq was at home with his two daughters at their home in Beeston, on Monday 12th January, when five masked men entered the house. “It was around 7pm that everything happened and the whole incident was over in 10 minutes,” Mr Farooq explained. “We had left the back door unlocked in anticipation of my son returning home shortly, but I was then confronted by these men with balaclavas in my own living room. “I couldn’t believe it. It was so shocking to be in that position and I was just telling them, we don’t have anything of value here, we are not a rich family.” As the men walked through the house, one gunman pointed a sawn-off shotgun at Mr Farooq’s head whilst three others stormed upstairs to search the rooms. 23-year-old Salma Farooq had been upstairs with her sister, Saarah, 12, at the time and said it was an ordeal which left her numb with fear. “They were just saying to me

and my sister, ‘Where is the gold? Where is the money?’,” she explained. “We didn’t know but they continued to demand that we tell them. They had these big guns and weapons.” The robbers finally fled the scene after Mr Farooq’s 19-yearold son returned home from work and ran out of the home to call for help. Mr Farooq added: “I just told him, ‘run, run, run’, and he left through the door and ran back up the street. The men all followed a moment later but turned right instead down the ginell at the end of our street.” After 20 minutes police arrived at the scene but the men had all disappeared. Be safe, be insured A former cabbie from Leeds is warning residents about the dangers of trying to ‘flag down’ private hire vehicles, rather than prebooking them from a reputable agency. Fleet manager at Leeds’ Amber Cars, John Hargreaves, helps oversee more than 900 drivers in his role, who complete around 90,000 jobs in total a week. Having been in the taxi trade for more than 30 years, he is well informed on all new and old legislations for private hire vehicles and explained how important it was for drivers to respect these laws. “The one thing that everybody must be aware of is that only Hackney Carriage Vehicles, the black and white ones, are allowed to pick up customers without booking,” he said. “They have the insurance coverage to do so, and may charge a little bit more at times but it is the only way a person flagging down a taxi will be covered.

“If you just jump into a private hire vehicle without pre-booking, you are not insured. If you crash and suffer serious injuries, you won’t be covered.” As part of Amber Cars recruitment policy, each new driver must sign a contract which states they will not pick up any passengers who have not pre-booked. Failure to comply with this ruling will lead to the termination of their employment showing the seriousness of the offence. “We have a duty of care in our roles as drivers and if somebody doesn’t adhere to that then they will be dismissed, it is as simple as that,” Mr Hargreaves added. “We simply won’t tolerate it. “I know that when it comes to getting home from a late night, if a person sees any type of taxi they are likely to try and flag it down. “We are not allowed to pick them up and this is something people must learn.”

A group of budding entrepreneurs from a local college have been showcasing their business-savvy skills this week as they progressed to the final of a nationwide competition. Students from Kirklees College, who attend the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy, have reached the last stage of the Jessops Cannon Challenge, and will go head to head with a team from Peterborough at the finals later this month. The project asked students to find the best strategies of helping struggling retailer, Jessop, which

was purchased by renowned businessman Peter Jones in January 2013. The Dragon’s Den star tasked participants in the 26 Peter Jones Enterprise Academies nationally to come up with ideas to move the company forward, with its debts exceeding £80million when taken over two years ago. Kirklees College Business Enterprise Manager Lydia Butterworth said she was delighted to see the team advance into the finals and hoped their ideas would come out on top. She said: “I am over the moon

PARIS Growing debate among Muslims and freedom of speech

In the wake of the terrorist attack, where gunmen in Paris killed 12 people, many Muslim clerics across the globe quickly condemned the actions, saying there was no acceptable justification for the killings. It was a signal from some of the Islamic world's strictest voices that cartoons lampooning the Prophet Muhammad in the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo were not a reason to kill the artists. On Sunday 11th January, hundreds of thousands of people including a number of world leaders such as Angela Merkel, Benjamin Netanyahu, and David Cameron gathered in Paris for a unity rally, to stand in mourning, in defiance. These declarations were a display of solidarity with those who lost their lives and those who survived. Western critics are becoming increasingly brazen about suggesting there is something inherent in Islam that is sparking violence by some of its adherents. Most Muslims reject this, arguing that the conflicts in the Middle East have created fertile ground for fuelling anger and discontent on foreign policies of the Western world. What has become rather alarming to see are the relentless calls for the Muslim communities across the world to denounce terrorism carried out by radicalised individuals and groups. Where Muslims are making gestures of solidarity via social networks, they can share the frustration, fear and devastation of acts of terror, but in reality most are not able to do much more. They don’t feel competent enough to feign expertise in a matter they know little of.

The dilemma now is how to engage in the growing debate within Islam on how to reject the radicalised minority that most Muslims fear are dragging them into conflict and wrecking the faith. Leeds Art Gallery is once again set to host its immensely popular Picture Library this month at its Winter Selection Weekend. Holocaust Memorial Day

Hundreds of people braved the inclement weather last weekend to attend a special event in Bradford’s Centenary Square, protesting ‘the hypocrisy of freedom of speech’. The entrepreneurial spirit and talents of young people from all over West Yorkshire were on show at the White Rose Shopping Centre last weekend. On Sunday 11th January, the Young Enterprise Trade Fair returned for its eleventh consecutive year, bringing young entrepreneurs to the centre, pitching their wares alongside the high street stores. The fair aims to give young people an opportunity to get a feel for what it is like to be in business and to develop the skills they will need in the world of work and industry. As well as producing or sourcing their product or service, the students had also developed business and marketing plans as part of the project, which was to set up and run their own company for a year. Nikki Appleton, marketing manager at White Rose Shopping Centre, said: “We were really pleased to be able to support the Social Enterprise scheme for the eleventh successive year in the centre. “This is a fantastic opportunity for young entrepreneurs to gain experience in understanding how a business works in a retail environment and we are

An exhibition celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema legacy will launch at a Dewsbury Museum this weekend bringing a touch of South Asian history to West Yorkshire. The ‘Legacy of Indian Cinema Art’, or ‘LOICA’, drew in large crowds when it was shown briefly for a day at the Batley Festival last year with many onlookers commenting on the unique exhibition. Now local people will get another, longer chance to enjoy it when it is displayed at the museum in Crow Nest Park, Heckmondwike Road, from

Saturday 10th January until Friday 20th March. The project, by the Batleybased Kirklees Filmmakers, was brought to life with the help and collaboration of 10 artists from across different spectrums including dance, theatre, play, art, music and film. Meirul Din, the Creative and Artistic Director, said: “I am delighted to present LOICA. Our exhibition comprises art produced by very talented artists who have worked with participants from across Kirklees and Bradford. “LOICA, has been inspired by Indian Cinema, bringing together

the sparkle and rich and diverse colours from Bollywood, whilst using Kandinsky’s technique of representation and abstract art. We hope you visually enjoy the show.” The ‘show’ as Ms Din described it, showcases 12 large canvasses that interpret scenes from the first film of Indian cinema, ‘Raja Harishchandra’, highlighting the vibrant Kandinsky colours of the time. As each scene unfolds, the viewer’s senses are livened by the spectacular ray of moodreflecting colours, from happiness to sadness and then onto tranquillity. The aim of the project, which involved 96 participants in the creation of the artwork, was to unite people from different cultures through an innovative creative activity and to form a legacy piece of art that will be toured across museums and art galleries for years to come. The exhibition can be viewed during Dewsbury Museum’s usual opening times with free admission for all.

Thousands of people braved the snowy conditions in Bradford last weekend to attend a memorable procession which celebrated one of the most important dates in the Islamic year. The annual ‘Eid-Milad-unNabi’ is the festival of the birth of Prophet Muhammad, with Muslims across the country commemorating the occasion with a colourful display. At Bradford’s Al-Jamia SuffaTul-Islam Grand Mosque, the local community gathered alongside members of Islamic organisations from across the country to parade through the city’s streets.

Participants recited poems of praise, waved colourful flags and displayed banners with messages of love and peace for all humanity as the procession set off from Europe’s largest mosque and peacefully passed through the streets of Bradford returning to the Grand Mosque. The procession was presided by the founder of the host organisation, the internationally renowned Muslim Scholar, Shaykh Mohammad Habib-urRehman Mahboobi but also welcomed dozens of senior scholars from around the world.

Speaking after the procession, event chief organiser Mohammed Riaz said: “I would like to thank everyone who took part in this beautiful event on behalf of AlJamia Suffa-Tul-Islam including all the volunteers, stewards and the general public. “Like every year it would not have been possible without you. Leeds’ Grand Finale

Leeds is celebrating after being chosen to host the finale of the first ever Tour de Yorkshire international cycle race. A three day race, held between the 1st and 3rd May, will build to a stunning crescendo in Roundhay Park, which is expected to be packed with passionate cycling fans and supporters. The news comes after the city held what was described as “the grandest ever Grand Départ”, by Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme. Last summer saw 230,000 spectators, in the city centre alone with thousands more filling spectator hubs, crowd on to the streets to cheer on international cycling stars creating an electric atmosphere that will long be remembered.

Kirklees library service have announced the winners of a photographic competition that asked library members to take a photo of their favourite local view to feature on brand new library cards for adult readers. Their existing stocks of library cards were running very low so it was also a good opportunity to promote the service and the benefits of library membership. In the past Kirklees Libraries have run a similar competition for children, which was very successful. The winners, along with Cllr Graham Turner were invited to Huddersfield Library on Saturday 10th January to be presented with the new library membership cards featuring their photos.

FLASHED: The bus lane on Kirkstall Road cost motorists more than £250,000 in just ten months

Bus lanes are many driver’s worst enemy, with the ‘congestion easing’ initiatives usually costing more in fines for motorists on top of adding time to journeys. In Leeds, it seems the story is no different with motorists being fined a total of £3million over the last two years for venturing into the ‘no-go zones’. Averaging out at more than £4,000 a day, the council say they are reinvesting the fines back into the roads yet many still want to see more done to improve driving conditions for the large outlay in fines. On Kirkstall Road for example, the bus lane camera just before Canal Road, has caught out motorists more than any other except one in the city, with more than 25,000 drivers venturing over the solid white lines. It also brought in almost £250,000 in just ten months. Due to its close location to a left turn, many have argued that the camera is too prolific and is in fact causing more unnecessary congestion on one of the city’s busiest roads. A Leeds City Council spokeswoman provided the following statement: “We monitor the impact of bus lane enforcement to make sure the measures we have taken are delivering the best possible outcomes for road users,” she said. “Evidence shows that in some locations offences have reduced by 80 per cent suggesting that the cameras are having an impact, making sure bus lanes aren’t congested with traffic that shouldn’t be there so that buses can run to time.” In total there are 39 bus lanes in Leeds, with 32 of them being enforced by fixed cameras. A fine of £30 is handed out to any persons who enter the lanes during specified hours, rising to £60 if it is not paid within 14 days. An appeals process is available with almost 3,000 tickets revoked over the last two years.

A group of talented musicians will be performing in Leeds for the first time this week as cultures are brought together in the city for a very unique performance. The band, known as Project 12, comprises of 11 young British musicians from diverse backgrounds, aged between 20 and 30-years-old, who all share the artistic ambition to create and perform world music that best represents them. Infusing their love of classical Indian music with their Western upbringing, the unique performance will take place at Leeds Belgrave Music Hall on Friday 16th January. Amongst the musicians is local Leeds born artist, Jasdeep Singh Degun. The Ethnomusicology graduate is not only an accomplished sitarist, but also contributes, and composes to, the music of the band and is looking forward to returning to his home city. He explained: “Project 12 was born a year ago, but some of us have known each other for over 10 years. “We have all grown up enjoying a mix of music styles, from Western RNB and Hip Hop to classical Indian ragas, but in all our situations there was very little space for composing our own music. “Project 12 is a product of our past experiences and our urge to create something exclusive and new.” Jasdeep continues; “We’ve come together very naturally, we never imagined we’d be touring the country sharing our passion of music with such captive audiences.” The local musician has previously collaborated with

IPL IPL works more like a flash lamp, sending out scattered wavelengths of light that cannot be focused like laser. It has a much more shallow penetration and is therefore less powerful. Taking this into account, one can deduce that Laser is more effective than IPL in providing permanent hair reduction.

SUCCESS: Ahmad Gul has been recognised as one of the top Gujarati writers in the UK after being awarded the Gurajat Darpan Award for his short stories entitled ‘Ajaanya’

Success story One man’s passion for writing was acknowledged from the other side of the world last month as a Batley resident was awarded a top literary award, all the way from India. Ahmad Gul, poet and chairman of the Gujarati Writers Forum (GWF), was given the Gujarat Darpan Award for his collection of short stories entitled ‘Ajaanya’ (meaning ‘Strangers’). The presentation took place in Indore, India last month, on behalf of the historic literary organisation known as the Gujarati Sahitya Parisad, of which Mahatma Ghandi once chaired in the 1930’s. The 105-year-old organisation holds the awards ceremony biannually and it is considered one of the top literary honours in Gujarati literature. Mr Gul, who moved to Batley from India back in 1963, has been writing since his arrival in the UK and initially used it as a way of remembering home. His latest commendation was awarded for his short stories which depicted the ‘realities of Muslim families and society’ – something which is somewhat rare in this type of

literature. Commenting on his award, Mr Gul, confirmed that his triumph was the second best achievement of his life and could only be triumphed by his OBE recognition. Ismail Daji, secretary of GWF added: “The members of Batley’s Gujarati Writers’ Forum congratulate Ahmad Gul for this outstanding achievement. “This award has placed him to a level not yet reached by any member of Gujarati community in the UK. “We feel it’s a just and rightful recognition of Mr Gul’s hard work, his literary ability and his deep insight into our culture, our family life, and our society.” Mr Mohamed Mula, chairman of the Indian Muslim Welfare Society (IMWS), added: “We would like to congratulate Mr Lunat OBE for his achievement. “Let us hope such a glittering prize would act as a catalyst for the ‘would be’ author from our local community.”

CONQUERED After 365 days of exhaustive running and cycling, Naheem Yacub has finally completed his ‘2,313 miles in 2014’ challenge. Setting himself the target of completing the distance, the equivalent of travelling from the UK to Syria, in aid of charity, the fundraiser from Leeds finally reached his target last weekend at the Lancashire half-marathon. Battling through the final 13 miles, with his injured ankle, the part-time barber, part-time supply teacher, has run marathons, half-marathons, 10ks and even cycled the length of the country on his way to the goal. Speaking about finally reaching his target after 12 months of continuous effort, Naheem said: “When I crossed the finish line there was just this huge sense of relief that it was all finally over. I just sat on the ground and couldn’t quite believe it. “It is a bit strange on a morning now when I wake up and I don’t have to think, ‘it’s time to go on a run’, so I am enjoying that side of it. “To know I was able to raise so much money and awareness from the initiative as well certainly makes it all worthwhile at the end

Naheem had initially planned on completing the total distance on foot with only one leg of cycling – from Lands End to John O’Groats – on his way to the 2,313 target. However, after injuring his ankle, he was forced onto the bike saddle more often towards the end of the challenge, but made sure he still completed his last leg in his running shoes. “To have completed it all now and to have finished the final leg back in Lancashire where I first began the challenge in January 2014, just all seems so surreal,” he said. “It was very painful on my ankle at times and I should have

really gone to the doctors but I know they would have just said ‘rest it’ and I just didn’t have the time to do that. Maybe I do now.” Asked whether he will be completing the return 2,313 miles any time soon, Naheem added that he was not sure that he had another year’s worth of dedicated running in the tank at the moment but is still fundraising over the next few weeks. “We have a couple of bucket collections arranged for this month and I will be donating a full day’s takings from the barbers at the start of February,” he said. “Hopefully these extra funds will take us past our next milestone.” He added: “I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated because it wouldn’t have been possible without them.” If you would like to sponsor Naheem you can still do so by visiting his fundraising page at uk.virginmoneygiving.com.

The announcement was made in a report released earlier this month, with Bradford Council proposing tougher tests to ensure the city’s cabbies are able to hold conversations with their passengers. Previous rules indicated that a would-be cabbie must be able read a paragraph from a book and write a receipt for a journey. However, the latest rulings will replace the old technique with a conversation exam. A Council report says possible questions could include: ‘What do you think of the weather recently?’, ‘Where did you take your last customer?’ or ‘How do you get from A to B?’. The report adds that ‘the answers are not the focus, the focus is to ensure the applicant understands English and has contributed to a communication in English at a basic level.’ Shabir Ahmed, of the Keighley and Bradford Taxi Driver’s Association, praised the new rulings and believed communication

was important in the trade. “I think no cabbie or taxi driver has ever been against this sort of test but the council has just never introduced it,” he said. “Nearly every new driver can fluently speak English now because it is important for their job. This rule should have been brought in around 20 years ago along with legislation for dress codes in my opinion but those in charge are only just catching up now.” Mr Ahmed added that, despite his backing of the changes in English tests, he would rather see the council helping drivers than adding further legislations. Referring to the £30,000 surplus that Bradford’s taxi and private hire licensing service made for the period of 2013/14, he continued: “It costs each of us £6 to get our taxi licensed. “It costs the council nothing to check them with the DVLA so every penny of that is profit. It may not sound like a lot of money but when you consider the number of drivers it is clear that we are being overcharged.” The authority has confirmed plans to lower many of its fees in the near future whilst a decision as to whether the new English tests will be brought in, will be made later this week.

Card fraud targeting Asian families Officers from Kirklees CID are advising residents in Dewsbury to be aware of a telephone scam which has resulted in the theft of several bank cards. Suspects pretending to be officers from Dewsbury Police Station have been telephoning victims and claiming that their bank card has been fraudulently used to buy goods and services. They then offer to collect the person's credit or debit card from their home either in person or by sending a taxi. A Dewsbury shopkeeper says he was left ‘terrified’ after being the victim of a gunpoint robbery just three months after starting his job. Haider Afzal, from Saville Town, had been working at Rupyal Superstore when a gunman entered the premises on Thursday 27th December around 8.20pm. Pointing a gun at the 22-year-old, the armed man demanded all the cash from the register and made off with around £160. Mr Afzal, whose family run the store, said the ordeal felt ‘almost unreal’ when it happened. He explained: “I remember it was just me and my friend who were in the shop at that time and this guy just walked in with a gun, pointed it at me and said ‘give me all the money in the till’.

“At first I couldn’t really believe what was happening, I was just confused and shocked. “I looked over to my friend and he just nodded so I handed over what there was and he left.” He added: “It was all so strange because it is an experience I have never had before and it is scary to think that this man is still out there.” The thief was masked at the time and described as a white male, wearing a navy blue hooded top with the number 76 on the back, and some dark bottoms. Despite the shocking ordeal, Mr Afzal says he will continue working at the Hannover Street store and thanked the local community for their support. “People have been coming into the store and asking how we are doing which has been really nice,” he said. “This kind of thing doesn’t happen around here so I think everybody was a bit shocked really but their support has been great.” CCTV footage from the shop was handed to West Yorkshire Police following the incident and Detective Inspector Ian Thornes, of Kirklees CID, appealed for any witnesses who may have seen something that Saturday evening to come forward. He said: “Obviously the victim was shaken up by the incident. It was a Saturday night and it could have been quite busy at the time. “There was probably a person waiting around for a quiet time in the shop before he went in. party to a litigation is not required to instruct a Solicitor to represent them and many individuals will often act as litigants in person with no legal representation whatsoever. Whilst there is no strict requirement for legal representation, the decision to ‘go it alone’ can prove very costly in terms of the outcome of a case. The case of Hobson –v- West London Law Solicitors (“WLL”) concerned a claim in professional negligence brought by a litigant in person against his former Solicitors. The claim arose from the allegedly negligent handling of a claim against their predecessor Solicitors (Nelsons) for damages relating to value lost on a property transaction. Court proceedings had been issued in the original claim at the end of the limitation period and were subsequently struck out. Mr Hobson then issued proceedings against WLL alleging negligence on their part which resulted in the claim being struck out. Following lengthy delays in the proceedings, WLL applied to strike out the claim against them on the basis that the Claimant had failed to comply with Orders of the Court and the Court Rules and Practice Directions. The Claimant stated that he had had difficulties in complying with Court Orders as a result of his ill health. He was apologetic for his conduct and assured the Court he would not allow it to happen again. Nevertheless, his claim was struck out. The High Court noted that whilst the Claimant sought to rely on his heart problems as a reason for the delay, he had failed to produce satisfactory

medical evidence in support of the contention that this would prevent him from conducting the litigation. He had also sought to rely on other reasons for the delay, such as multiple printer or computer failures and the desire to help out a friend who had had bad news. The Court took the view that there was no good or adequate reason for the “sorry catalogue of delay, obfuscation and excuses”. The Claimant’s failures had had serious consequences for the litigation and resulted in judicial time being used “fruitlessly”. This had impacted on the Defendants, the Court and other Court users. Despite the fact that the Claimant was a litigant in person, the Court took the view that there was no good reason for the defaults and that even though he was not a professional, nor being advised by a professional, the Claimant’s conduct was not acceptable and could not be condoned by the Court. he Government’s Start Up Loan scheme has hit another milestone as the 25,000th business loan is approved, taking the total amount lent to new firms to nearly £130 million. A 37-year-old policeman in Birmingham who led a secret doublelife as head of an organised crime group was caught out after suspicious colleagues saw him turning up for work in a £170,000 Ferrari. Osman Iqbal, who was on a £25,000-a-year salary as an emergency response police officer with West Midlands Police astonished his fellow officers who saw him arrive at Kings Heath police station in a Ferrari 458. Whether it was jealous colleagues or otherwise, someone tipped off the anti-corruption department who began to look into his financial affairs for clues as to how he could afford the supercar. Shocked detectives discovered Iqbal was laundering hundreds of thousands of pounds through a fake business, which eventually linked him to an organised crime group that ran brothels and sold drugs. Iqbal along with his partner convicted armed robber Talib Hussain, 33, led a gang who picked up clients from strip bars in exclusive

areas of London. Iqbal was jailed for seven years and four months and sacked by the force last year after admitting various conspiracy charges, but appeared in court this month, where he admitted three counts of misconduct in a public office. Warwick Crown Court heard he made unauthorised attempts to access police intelligence systems on behalf of Birmingham religious leader. Iqbal will be sentenced next month for the misconduct offences. Chief Insp Martin Brennan, from West Midlands Police’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit, said the cars and greed gave the men away. He said: "This was a highlyorganised and well-orchestrated criminal network but what makes it particularly reprehensible is that fact a serving police officer was at the centre of it all. "Iqbal and his associates generated their income by running ‘exclusive’ brothels and peddling Class A drugs. "For them, it was all about the money and the fast cars and they

didn’t care who they were exploiting and what laws they were breaking in the process. "Their greed was their downfall and when they were seen driving around in their supercars it didn’t take us long to piece together exactly what they were up to and take action. "We constantly target networks like this and it doesn’t matter who’s involved, we will seek to use the full weight of the law against them." Insp Tracey McGrath, from the Counter Corruption Unit, said: "The vast majority of West Midlands Police officers and staff are honest, hardworking people. "But occasionally there are people who disgracefully betray the public and even their own colleagues by exploiting their status for their own gain. "Where officers and staff fall short of the standards we expect, we will always take action. "In this case we’ll be looking to seize all the assets Iqbal acquired as a result of his criminal activity and his police pension too."

Female detainees at immigration detention centre routinely humiliated by male staff

A report identified that female asylum seekers detained in the Yarl’s Wood immigration detention centre are routinely humiliated by male staff who monitor them while they are dressing, showering and using the toilet, or are naked in their rooms. Women for Refugee Women (WRW) interviewed 38 women who were recently or currently detained at Yarl's Wood - the Bedfordshire detention centre that houses women and family's who are awaiting immigration clearance. The report also identifies that these women have been victims of sexual violence in their home countries. Nineteen of the women interviewed said they had been raped, and 28 women in total indicated they had experienced forced marriage, forced prostitution, female genital mutilation or some other form of sexual violence before coming to the UK. The report also found high levels of depression among detainees, with 19 of the 38 interviewed saying they had been put on suicide watch for all or part of their time at the centre. The study also raises concerns at the use of solitary confinement. The report follows earlier

research into sexual assaults by staff on detainees in Yarl’s Wood. In June 2014, the centre’s management said 31 allegations of sexual contact had been investigated and a number of staff were dismissed. Serco, the outsourcing firm that runs Yarl’s Wood under contract to the Home Office, had its contract renewed last November to run the centre for another eight years. In a statement, Serco said the allegations were “uncorroborated”. Norman Abusin, Serco’s contract director at Yarl’s Wood, said: “We take all complaints seriously and we have strict procedures for dealing with them. They are always fully investigated and, if appropriate, disciplinary action is taken.” The decision to detain women who have been trafficked, tortured or suffered sexual abuse has already caused controversy and Labour has promised to prohibit the detention of pregnant women and women who have experienced torture or sexual abuse if it wins the election. Researchers focused on the problem of male staff intimidating detainees, by routinely invading their privacy. “Almost all (of the women interviewed) said men watched them in intimate situations, such as while naked, partly dressed

in the shower or on the toilet,” the report says. “Of the 38 women, 33 said they experienced men seeing them in these situations. Of the 33, 13 said men saw them naked, 29 said men saw them partially dressed, 29 said men saw them in bed, 16 said men saw them in the shower and 14 said men saw them using the toilet.” Serco guidelines say staff should not enter detainees’ rooms for searches without knocking. The women said such searches made them scared, uncomfortable, angry and ashamed. Detainees also reported high levels of bullying, with 29 saying they felt they had been bullied and 25 saying a member of staff had been racist. “They always come in without knocking… even if you are in the shower or toilet,” one woman said. “Men enter your room without knocking and see you in bed every day. I have been seen partly naked more than once,” another detainee said. “One day I was in the bathroom taking a shower, they asked me to come out. I was naked,” another told researchers. A fourth woman said: “Because of sexual abuse, I used to feel very uncomfortable with male officers in

my room when I was in bed. I felt very vulnerable. They said they don’t have to give you warning. They all enter and search.” Detainees report requesting that female staff should carry out searches, and being told this was not possible. The Home Office said the latest independent inspection by Her Majesty’s chief inspector of prisons found Yarl’s Wood to be a respectful and safe place. A spokesman said: “Detention and removal are essential elements of an effective immigration system. We are committed to treating all detainees with dignity and respect, and take any allegations to the contrary very seriously. “We have invited Women for Refugee Women to supply details of the cases in question so that they can be investigated fully.” Asylum seekers can be detained at any point in the asylum process if they are deemed “likely to abscond”, or if they have been refused asylum and their removal from the UK is imminent. In 2013, 2,038 women were detained after seeking asylum in the UK; 43% of them were held for more than a month. Asylum seekers are often unaware of the reasons for their

detention and most women interviewed found the arrest process traumatising. Fourteen of the women interviewed in the report said there were more than five members of staff involved in their arrest, and one said there were more than 10. Natasha Walter, director of Women for Refugee Women, said: “Survivors of sexual violence who come to the UK seeking protection are routinely being locked up and are denied privacy and dignity in detention. “The behaviour of staff, particularly male staff, in Yarl’s Wood detention centre is adding to the trauma of survivors of sexual violence. “Detention has no place in the asylum process. It is expensive, unjust and inefficient to lock up people who have come here to seek asylum. “Women who seek protection in the UK should be able to live in the community while their claims are considered.” During 2013, the Home Office detained 2,038 women who had come to the UK seeking asylum at detention centres like Yarl's Wood, the WRW report says. 43 per cent were held for more than a month.

Malkit Singh MBE, who’s successes include ‘Gurh Nalo Ishq Mitha’ and ‘Tootak Tootak Thootian (Hey Jamaolo)’, has since faced a barrage of vicious abuse via social

media since his daughter’s case went public. Amardip Bhopari, of Foley Road East in Birmingham, began teaching at the academy school which catered for pupils with learning difficulties in 2012. The teacher showered gifts on the 16-year-old boy and also plied him with drink while she groomed him. The first physical contact with the 16-year-old boy, who suffers from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia, began in February 2013. Bhopari had sent a text to the boy and arranged to meet him in the art room, where she performed a sexual act on him. She further went on to having sexual encounters with him in an industrial estate near the school, in her car and at her home. Bhopari also took the victim to a Formula 1 hotel on his birthday

Young British mum escapes Islamic State stronghold A young mother who left Britain with her toddler to join Islamic State (IS) has told of her harrowing experience in the terrorist stronghold. Tareena Shakil from Burton-Upon-Trent in Staffordshire, secretly travelled to Raqqa, in Syria, with her 14-month-old son Zaheem in October, to marry a jihadist fighter after contacting him on social media. The teenager has spoken of her ordeal and her attempt to escape from the Middle East after fighters tried to force her to become a “jihadi bride”. She made a daring escape across the border into Turkey, scaling a barbed wire fence with her bare hands while begging snipers to spare her and her son’s lives. Now Tareena, who is currently in a Turkish detention centre awaiting deportation, has been reunited with her father Mohammad. She said: “I escaped death so many times. There were bombs coming down on the street where I lived every night - the house would shake. I didn't know if I was going to live or die. “Life is so hard there. There’s no hot water, no electricity for hours on end, none of the comforts we are used to in Britain. “One night there were around 30 bombs. It was horrific.” And she warned of loved ones attempting to rescue IS converts: “Anyone who goes in from the West to try and rescue their loved ones is facing almost certain death.” Experts have warned that women are the new target for recruitment for IS, with researchers seeing "unprecedented" calls for fighters to marry British and European women. Mohammed Kozar, from the Finsbury Park Mosque, said around 15 messages of hate have been received despite much support from the community. Amongst the letters were hand drawn images depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a devil worshipper, as well as death threats to members of the mosque. “Most of them are nasty drawings about our prophet and our books,” Mr Kozar said. “Some of them make death threats against our community, so it's quite frightening for our community and our mosque.” The Finsbury Park Mosque gained notoriety in the past for its involvement with radical preachers, yet over the past decade, has reformed itself into a place for interfaith and peaceful worship. Nonetheless, one former attendee, Djamel Beghal, is believed to have mentored two of the three gunmen involved in the Charlie Hebdo attack. “It's not fair for them after the work they've done here; changing it from a hostile atmosphere to a cohesive atmosphere. “I can't deny or confirm whether this person (Djamel Beghal) had links to the mosque before 2005 but I can confirm it never happened whilst we were here.” Fiyaz Mughal, director of Islamophobia watchdog Tell MAMA, said it wasn’t only the Finsbury Park Mosque which had received Islamophobic attacks, with a rise in such events seen nationally. “There is a vast amount of online hate around but we've also had street-based incidents reported to us, particularly from mosques,” he said. “We're also having members of the public - particularly visible Muslim women - who are unfortunately coming back to us saying people are saying things to them again around the Charlie Hebdo affair; saying things like 'I'm Charlie - you are not.' “We've received information from umbrella bodies that work with Muslim charities. They have sent us information around leaflets that have been sent and, again, hate mail that has been sent to Muslim charities. “So faith institutions as well as Muslim charities are the ones receiving some form of hate mail at the time.”

Woman detained at UK airport

British police have arrested an 18year old woman at a London airport on suspicion of preparing acts of terrorism and membership of a banned organization, a police statement said. Her arrest on Friday, after she arrived on a flight at Stansted airport, was connected to a prior investigation which had already resulted in the arrest of a 21year-old man in October last year. The woman was taken to a London police station where she remains in custody, the police said. The arrest is the latest in a series carried out by British counter-terrorism officers since the country's threat level was raised in August to its second-highest level because of risks posed by Islamic State fighters returning from Iraq and Syria. Much of Europe is currently on heightened security alert after last week's killings in Paris and raids in Belgium in which two gunmen were killed.

Imran Khan gets court summons for defamation A court in Islamabad, Pakistan, has summoned Imran Khan over a defamation notice filed by a former Chief Justice. Imran Khan, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, had accused former Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry of poll rigging in the 2013 general election. Filed by the former Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s counsels - Sheikh Ehsanuddin and Taufeeq Asif, the libel suit argues that Khan's allegations against Chaudhry were defamatory and claimed Rs20 billion (£131 million) in damages. Chaudhry petitioned to the court, saying that the rigging allegations levelled against him were false. He also recounted how in a written response to the previous libel notice which was issued on 24th July last year, Imran's lawyers had said that he did not mean to “abuse or disrespect any member of the judiciary”, and had urged the former chief justice to “reconsider the idea of entering into personal litigation”.

Chaudhry said that Khan should pay the damages for attempting to discredit him. The District and Sessions judge Justice Nazir Ahmed Gajana has given a deadline of 29th January for Imran Khan to appear in court by 29th January with his response. Last year, Chaudhry had sent a libel notice, stating that legal proceedings would be initiated against the PTI chief if he failed to apologise for the allegations he had levelled against the former chief justice. Imran had said he stood by the allegations he had levelled against Iftikhar Chaudhry, while his aides claimed the lawyer drafted the letter without consulting with the PTI chairman. Speaking to media representatives outside his Bani Gala residence, Imran said that he does not have Rs20 billion to give as a compensatory amount to the former CJ. The PTI chief said that he would pursue this matter, claiming that the CJ's role in the 2013 election rigging is coming to the forefront. "Rs20 billion is quite a lot of money and I don't have that amount. I will ask Arsalan Iftikhar for money as he has managed to make a lot of it," Khan said.

French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo published a picture of the Prophet Muhammad weeping on its cover last week after two gunmen stormed its offices and killed 12 people. The gunmen said their attack was revenge for previous cartoons the magazine had published mocking Islam. On Sunday, the protest was seen with the founder of a group banned for militant links urged protesters to boycott French products, at the forefront of the demonstration. Hafiz Saeed, who founded Lashkar-e-Taiba, an organisation banned for launching attacks in

neighbouring India, told protesters: “We will launch a movement against the insulting caricatures of our beloved prophet.” Saeed urged traders to stop importing French products and for Pakistani leaders to try to get an international law against blasphemy passed. Blasphemy is punishable by death in Pakistan. On Friday, protesters trying to storm the French consulate in the southern city of Karachi shot and injured a photographer working for French news agency AFP. Saeed called for more rallies next Friday. He says he has no links to militancy these days and only runs a charity, which is banned by the U.S. government for suspected militant links. The U.S. government has offered $10 million for information leading to Saeed's conviction.

Fear spreads over mystery Sri Lankan kidney killer disease Hundreds of people are squeezed under a banyan tree's shady canopy to have blood drawn by just three nurses, working assembly-line fast. Others wait outside this dusty rural health centre to get their vitals taken and give urine samples. Most of the 1,000 villagers have come here on foot and have stood for hours under the hot sun - not because they feel sick, but out of fear. They want to know if they will be the next victims of a mysterious kidney disease that has killed thousands of farmers in Sri Lanka's rice basket. Many have watched neighbours and loved ones quickly succumb to deaths after their kidneys gave out. In the worst-hit villages, it kills as many as 10 people every month. No one knows why. "In some cases, you only know if a certain person died of kidney disease after the autopsy," says Kalyani Samarasinghe, 47, standing outside the health center with a handful of medical papers and a cotton ball taped to her arm. "If you get a pain in the stomach or something, then you think: Is it the

kidney?" The disease has killed up to 20,000 people over the past 20 years and sickened another 70,000 to 400,000. It has expanded from two districts to seven in the North Central province's dry zone, where farming was transformed after the introduction of modern techniques in the 1960s and '70s. No cases have been detected elsewhere in the country, and research has failed to determine the cause. Some blame the water, heavy use of pesticides and fertilizer. Others wonder if it's something in the food, or whether heavy metals or toxic algae could be the source. Villagers have been told to give up lake fish, aluminum cooking utensils and illicit home-brewed alcohol, but no one's sure if any of it helps. Dr. Rajeeva Dassanayake, a kidney specialist at the area's largest hospital in Anuradhapura, has come to the screening to try to calm the crowd. "You need not fear and flee from this place," he says. In hard-hit Nicaragua and El Salvador, some believe agrochemicals are the problem, while others think years of prolonged dehydration in the baking heat is shutting workers' organs down. In Sri Lanka, a report published by the World Health Organization two years ago found kidney disease in 15 percent of adults across three affected districts. More women were affected overall, but men over 39 years old were more severely sickened. Elevated cadmium and pesticide residues were detected in urine, leading the authors to surmise they may be damaging

patients' kidneys over time, in combination with other factors such as arsenic. Water, which was the source widely suspected as the culprit, came up clean. However the WHO study's Geneva-based author, Shanthi Mendis, says it could still be playing a key role when combined with other elements. She adds that the government's top two priorities should be supplying safe drinking water to residents and regulating the use of agrochemicals. The WHO report documented raised levels of cadmium and lead in certain plants and vegetables, such as lotus root and tobacco. Some question whether these heavy metals could be leaching into the soil and groundwater from pesticides and fertilizers,

which have been found to have high levels of cadmium in previous studies. The Agriculture Ministry says samples are regularly tested and come back within permitted limits, which are much stricter than those in neighboring countries. Still, farmers douse their fields with too many chemicals, often using concoctions that include kerosene and multiple poisons. Most do not wear protective gear. The government placed a ban on some agrochemicals since the WHO report came out, but it has not been enforced and the pesticides remain available. For those already sickened, care is often inadequate. The country of 20 million, which emerged from a quarter-century of civil war in 2009, has just 183 dialysis machines, forcing most villagers to receive less than the three recommended weekly treatments. Since no national cadaver transplant program exists, many patients post desperate newspaper ads with their photos and blood types pleading for kidney donors. The Health Ministry is trying to screen the area to determine how many people are sick with the socalled chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology, which often strikes several members of one family. Fear is breeding stigma, but it is also driving many villagers to be screened. They hope early detection can help slow the disease, which typically does not produce symptoms until late. But their biggest worries is about the risk to children.

University u-turn after security concerns CHANGE: Despite being told the call to prayer would be heard from the Chapel Tower earlier in the week, a decision to reverse the ruling was passed on Friday

Call for Prayer decision reversed An American university, which announced plans to broadcast a call to prayer from its chapel tower every Friday, has reversed that same decision following a number of objections.

Duke University, in North Carolina, initially had planned to broadcast a ‘moderately amplified’ call to prayer, read by members of the Muslim Students Association, for approximately three minutes. However, plans will now see the students gather in a grassy area near the same chapel tower before going inside to a specified room to conduct their weekly prayer service. Duke’s vice president for public affairs and government relations, Michael Schoenfeld, said it would still be the decision of the students if they wished to use ‘some sort of amplification’. Explaining why the university took the decision to go back on their original plans, Mr Schoenfeld said: “There was considerable traffic and conversation and even a little bit of confusion, both within the campus and certainly outside, about what Duke was doing. “The purposes

and goals and even the facts had been so mischaracterized as to turn it into a divisive situation, not a unifying situation.” Amongst those who were dissatisfied at the proposals was well known evangelist, Franklin Graham, who urged the university to cancel the call to prayer due to recent violence against Christians which he attributed to Muslims. Schoenfeld added that he had also received emails and calls from other alumni and people in the community, yet said the reversal was not due to Graham’s opposition. He also said there were concerns about safety and security, but declined to elaborate on whether any specific threats had been received. He added: “It is important to note that there will continue to be a call to prayer and service as there has been for many years. “The only thing that has changed is that it will not come from the bell tower of the Duke Chapel as previously announced. “Our Muslim community enriches the university in countless ways. We welcome the active expression of their faith tradition, and all others, in ways that are meaningful and visible.” More than 700, of Duke’s 15,000 students identify themselves as Muslim.

Indian censor board chief quits over film row India's censor board chief has resigned after reports that a film originally rejected by her panel has been cleared for release by an appeals board. Leela Samson got involved in a spat after the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal approved the film ‘Messenger of God’, directed by and starring guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. Ms Samson and her team for the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had found the film unsuitable for the public because it promoted superstition. She also accused the state-run CBFC of "corruption and coercion". Ms Samson took over in August last year after the board's former chief was arrested on charges of corruption. Ms Samson said the apparent clearance of the film was "a mockery" of her organisation after Ms Samson's panel rejected The American U.S. advocacy group Human Rights Watch has urged China to revise draft legislation aimed at combating terrorism, saying it was "a license to commit human rights abuses". The law, which was made public for consultation last November, would establish a new counter-terrorism body that would have the power to designate organisations and members as terrorists without any protections of due process. The draft's definition of terrorism includes "thought, speech, or behaviour" that attempt to "subvert state power", "incite ethnic hatred" or "split the state". Subversion and splittism are catch-all charges that have been used against dissidents. Human Rights Watch China director Sophie Richardson called for the draft law to be brought in line with international standards, saying that "in

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has revealed record sales results for a fifth consecutive year, with 4,063 cars sold globally during 2014. This exceptional result means that sales have more than quadrupled since 2009. Strong sales were reported worldwide, with double-digit growth in most regions, North America (up 30%), the Middle East (up 20%) and Europe (up 40%). The United States remained the company’s most significant individual market. RollsRoyce’s home market, the United Kingdom, is the company’s fourth largest individual market (up 13%). Europe saw strong growth in a number of markets with Germany up by 30%, while in Asia Pacific, Australia grew by 75%, Japan by 60% and Korea 20%. In the Middle East, highlights included Bahrain (up 50%), Kuwait (up 45%) and Oman (up 27%). Emerging markets such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Vietnam all showed promising growth. The best-selling Rolls-Royce dealership in 2014 was Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Abu Dhabi. As part of the marque’s commitment to long-term sustainable growth, six new dealerships were opened in 2014, including Mexico City, Calgary, Canada and Gold Coast, Australia. A total of 127 dealerships are now in operation and further expansion is planned for 2015.

Bespoke Collections including Waterspeed, Pinnacle Travel and Metropolitan, and unique creations such as the Maharaja Phantom Drophead Coupé contributed to Rolls‑Royce sustaining its leadership of the industry in the area of individualisation. In 2014, Rolls‑Royce once again sold more cars in the +Euros 200,000 net segment than any other manufacturer. 2014 also marked the first year in which every Phantom, and the great majority of Ghost and Wraith models, left the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood in West Sussex, England with significant Bespoke personalisation. A record number of

customers spent personal one-on-one time with Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke design consultants commissioning their personalised vehicles. Twenty-five years after the debut of the original, paradigm-shifting NSX supercar, Acura revealed the production version of its highly anticipated successor - the nextgeneration Acura NSX. Developed and produced in the U.S.A., the production model, in a scintillating NSX Red finish, took the stage with a growl from its twinturbocharged engine at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. The next generation NSX showcases the production styling, design and specifications of Acura’s mid-engine sports hybrid supercar, and Acura announced key details of the all-new vehicle’s design and performance. Specifically created to bring a “new sports experience the approach is realized through an all-new power unit—a twinturbocharged 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) and threeelectric motor Sport Hybrid system. Developed under the concept of a “human-centered supercar,” a car that puts the driver first in every aspect of its design, the nextgeneration NSX will leverage its state-of-the-art hybrid supercar power unit, body and chassis to deliver exceptionally intuitive and immediate response to driver inputs.

25 years after its debut Acura reveals the next generation of the NSX The development of nextgeneration NSX, driven by precision crafted performance, has resulted in a clean-sheet design, which involved nearly three years of intensive development effort by a global design and engineering team led by engineers at the company’s development center in Raymond, Ohio. The NSX body features classic low and wide proportions married to modern and alluring surfacing, an

aggressive front design, and tail lights that pays homage to the original NSX. The signature side intake and floating C-pillar collects air to feed the mid-mounted engine and directs airflow over the rear deck to increase downforce. To accommodate the new longitudinally mounted twin-turbo V6 and 9-speed DCT, the production vehicle was lengthened (+3 inches) and widened (+1 inch) with a slightly more cab-forward package, compared with the proportions of the NSX Concept

shown in 2012. The NSX has undergone extensive testing at the company’s state-of-the-art wind tunnel in Raymond, Ohio, leading to a number of significant changes from concept to final body design, including modified hood vents, new front fender vents, modified side air intakes, and an optimized deck spoiler. At the heart of the NSX’s performance capabilities is an allnew mid-mounted, 75-degree, DOHC V6 engine with twin

turbochargers mated to an Acuradeveloped 9-speed DCT. The V6 engine employs a raceinspired compact valve train and dry sump lubrication system to help lower the center of gravity. The allnew 9-speed DCT delivers synapsequick gear changes and rev-matching downshifts. The rear direct-drive electric motor, housed between the engine and transmission, supports acceleration, braking and transmission shifting performance. The NSX’s front wheels are driven by twin independent highoutput electric motors which deliver instantaneous torque response and dynamic left-to-right torque distribution. The NSX uses its front electric motors for dynamic torque vectoring in addition to enhancing acceleration and braking performance. The result is an instantaneous “zero delay” launch performance and handling response that seems to anticipate the driver’s desire. The NSX has undergone extensive testing at some of the world’s most challenging race circuits, including the famed Nurburgring. The company will begin accepting custom orders for the new NSX starting in the summer, with customer deliveries expected later in the year.

FXXK! Ferrari’s hybrid hypercar with 1021 bhp is the ultimate racer’s dream

Let’s just say the folks at Ferrari take their jobs very seriously. Ferrari has a new car nicknamed FXX K, this new V12 1021 bhp- beast (yes - start drooling) is actually a product of a new research and development programme. The car is based on Maranello’s first hybrid model. The “K” in its nomenclature actually points to “KERS” which maximises track performance. This is actually a race car version of the latest Ferrari the “La Ferrari”. However, this race car will never be used in competition so it does not follow any race regulations. It is designed for an exclusive group, which Ferrari calls “Client Test Drivers” with whom Ferrari will roll out a test programme over the coming two years. Let’s take a quick look at the FXX K’s numbers. The car generates a total output of 1021 bhp, 835 bhp of this humongous number is generated by its conventional V12 and the rest 188 bhp is by the electric motor. Maximum torque is said to cross 664 lp-ft. The KERS on board has been upgraded to give the driver an option to control the car in four different modes. These are present on the “Manettino” controller on the centre console. These four modes are

“Qualify” for maximum power within a limitied number of laps, “Long Run” for going the distance, “Manual Boost” for instant maximum torque delivery and “Fast Charge” for quick recharge of the battery. With detailed active and passive aerodynamic sections, this is the ultimate machine from Ferrari. The

vanes in the low drag configuration and boost the spoiler’s efficiency in the high downforce one. This system also creates increased downforce at the rear of the car, allowing the use of an extreme diffusion volume for the rear diffuser, which increases air extraction from the underbody. The result is a claimed 50%

front of the car has a prominent twin profile spoiler with a large splitter. At the back, the tail section is now higher (than LaFerrari) and the mobile spoiler extends further for a total increase in extension of 60 mm when fully deployed. After a lapse in form towards the end of the season, Borussia Teeth made sure they finished the campaign on a high note, overpowering already-relegated Samba FC, to clinch a 7-0 win. Five goals from the league’s top scorer, Hamza Ismail, guided the side on their way to all three points and ensured a top four finish for one of the league’s most entertaining side. Ismail’s incredible haul of goals also propelled him back to the top of the scorer’s charts for the season, as he picked up the golden boot award with 25 goals in his 18 league games, three ahead of his nearest competitor. Meanwhile, Haseeb Ahmed, who finished third on the list of scorers, also bagged a solitary goal, alongside Atif Din who got his name on the scoresheet.

The resurgent Super Six were forced to end the season with a defeat at the hands of Tetley’s Tino yet having already secured their place in the top division for next year, they will now look to prepare for a promising campaign. Having looked all but guaranteed to be relegated at the half-way point, Super Six finished four points clear of the drop despite the Tino’s win. Goalscorer in the game was Nadeem Saddique whose single strike confirmed his side’s fifth place finish, with only goal difference keeping them out of the top four.

Having watched their title hopes slip away last week, NFA were once again left frustrated on Thursday after being held to a goalless draw by Old Bacca Boys. A loss for OBB would have seen them finish the season in fifth spot, yet the final matchday point ensured a third place finish, making them the best of the rest behind the two runaway leaders. Two of the league’s tightest defences stood strong throughout the contest with a lack of firepower in both line-ups all but setting the tie up for a stalemate. NFA will be hoping to go one better next season and take top spot away from Hyde Park, yet look like they will need to recruit in the attacking department. Despite only being six points off the top at the end, and having conceded just five goals more, NFA scored 21 fewer goals which ultimately cost them the league crown.

Mayweather Jr has previously blamed Pacquiao’s boxing promoter claiming he is not willing to make the fight happen, Pacquiao making unreasonable money demands in terms of fight revenue and accusation that Pacquiao has used illegal sport enhancing drugs as justification for the fight not taking place. However Mayweather Jr has now dropped the biggest hint that he finally wants to end his spectacular career with a fight against Pacquiao. Mayweather Jr is now the nearing the end of his career and is known as the best pound for pound fighter in the world with an impressive 47 wins with no losses and the fight against Pacquiao could be his most career defining fight billed as being “The Fight of the Century.” Pacquiao’s promoter has confirmed this week that they have agreed the terms for the Mayweather Jr fight to take place on 2nd May 2015 in Las Vagas. has also been confirmed that Mayweather Jr’s representatives have agreed the fight deal in “principle” with a 60-40 split of the revenue in Mayweather Jr’s favour. The final seal of approval for this fight to take place is for Mayweather Jr himself to finally agree. It would seem that the biggest obstacle for this fight not to take place has been the financial split between the fighters and since Mayweather Jr’s demands have now been met this fight is closer to happening now than ever before. I personally do not believe that Mayweather Jr can be belittled about his financial demands in regards the Pacquiao fight since he sells more pay-per-views sales that any other fighter in the world and is also the undefeated fighter. The fight itself could generate Mayweather Jr and Pacquiao more than 120 million pounds in revenue and this fight is already being considered as the biggest fight ever in the sport of boxing. In my opinion the outcome of Pacquiao v Mayweather Jr will be a Mayweather Jr win and I also believe the likes of Marcos Maidana, Saul Alvarez and Robert Guerrero (all previous Mayweather Jr victims) had more of a boxing chance in defeating Mayweather Jr than Pacquiao has at this late stage of his career. The Mayweather Jr v Pacquiao fight is well overdue with both fighters now showing more signs of vulnerabilities in terms of boxing ability that comes natural with age. The time is now and it is better late than never to finally get this fight deal done and give the fight fans what they want to see. The final decision now lies in the hands of one man Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Black belt ceremony awards young trainers

Five martial artists from a kickboxing academy in Bradford were awarded their black belts last week after passing the grade in the fast-paced sport. The students, from Azar Farooq Kickboxing, received the decorated honour at a special ceremony on Monday, with family and friends in attendance. To achieve the final colour belt in the sport, the students had to complete moves and combinations from all previous belts, as well as newly introduced skills required for the black accolade. Aged between 10 and 19-years-old, each group member took approximately five and a half hours to complete the rigorous exam and were not told if they had passed until the ceremony. The youngest recipient on the day was 10-year-old Muin Bin Azar, who is also the son of head-instructor, Azar Farooq. The Brackenhill Primary School student said it felt great to receive his black belt, at a younger age than his brother. “Having done the exam back in December we were made to wait a long time to find out if we had passed so I am very happy,” he said.

“I want to keep going with it now and hopefully in the future open up my own dojo where I can help train young girls in the sport because they are currently underrepresented. “It is great fun and I want more young people to get involved.” Azar added that all the ‘kids have been great and all deserve their black belts’. “It took eight weeks of intense training to earn the belt, building up fitness and stamina for the final grading which lasted over five hours,” he said. “It is a big achievement for each of these students who, with the support of their family and everyone involved, have been able to gain this qualification.” The other students who received their awards on the day were: 13-year-old Waleed Bin Azar (second Dan); Musahib Sabir, 16; and Hassan Khan, 17. The presentation took place at Auto Prestige, In Bradford, and Arshad Mahmood, director of the company, explained why he was backing the academy and the importance of giving children access to sport. “I have been involved with Azar for around nine years now and it is not for any personal gain, just to give something back to the community,” he said. “We need more people, and more groups, like this one which are not only helping to teach children about selfdiscipline but also creating a safe environment for them, rather than standing around on the streets.”

Leeds’ Qais Ashfaq registered an emotional victory last week as he made a winning start to his life a British Lionheart. Coming up against China Dragon’s Diao Jianhao, the 21-year-old won on a split decision as he battled through the five-round contest in the World Series of Boxing. It was a tough mental challenge for Ashfaq, whose grandmother had sadly passed away just days before the fight, and he dedicated the win to her memory. “It was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster,” Ashfaq said. “I know I didn’t perform to my best and I did find it hard to compose myself at points because my emotions were really getting to me. “Obviously to have got the win was great and I dedicated the performance to my grandma.” Going into the match-up Ashfaq knew little about who his opponent was even going to be due to no footage being available for the Chinese bantamweight. Despite the unpredictably, the British Lionheart was able to claim victory on two of the three judge’s scorecards and helped his team on their way to a 3-2 triumph. Speaking about the tournament setup, he continued: “It was good to make my

WSB debut in the five-round format. I know I’m fit enough to complete the rounds and it is all good experience for building up my strength and technique. “I’m still only 21 and I’m coming up against people older than me which is really good for my development. I can feel myself getting stronger and this is just what I need to help me continue to improve.” The WSB sees teams, representing franchises across the globe, competing in a league format, leading to play-offs and a final. Three competitors are entered in each weight division from each nation with the top ranking boxer at the end of the tournament securing their place in the Olympics. Ashfaq added: “This is the hardest way to qualify to be honest but it is no different to anything else I enter, in that I go into every tournament to win. “What is unique about the competition is that we can compete in another WSB tournament later in the year if we are not successful in this one and get another shot at qualifying for the Olympics.” The British Lionhearts next fixture will take place on 30th January as the side travel to Africa to face the Morocco Atlas Lions.

I had some people saying they would travel from abroad just to compete in a few rounds with me so I knew it was going to happen.” After the challenge, Bajwa was told he had broken the Guinness World Record for most consecutive rounds of full Thai sparring – including elbows and knees to the face. “When it was all over I was just

so relieved, I had been hit so many times,” he said. “After ten rounds I remember thinking to myself, there are another 100 of these to go yet, but it wasn’t until the 60th or 70th that I really began to feel it. “Every hit was hurting and felt so heavy by then but I knew that I just had to keep going because people were counting on me.” Taking place at the K-Star Muay Thai Gym, in Oldbury, the now World-record holder added his thanks to all those who had supported him throughout the day. “I have to thank Damion Trainor in particular who let me use his gym all day and even started the sparring with me in the early rounds. “He is a former two-time world champion in the sport so it was definitely a tough start which set me up for the rest of the day. Also, a big thank you to everyone who

Battered, bruised and hurting, Mubz Bajwa walks away from the ring after 111 consecutive rounds of boxing yet still has a smile on his face, knowing he has broken a world record and raised hundreds of pounds for charity.

The Birmingham competitor, who has been involved in the sport for almost 20 years, took on the mammoth challenge last month in an attempt to raise money for Mary Stevenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hospice. Having completed a similar task of 150 rounds in April, Bajwa stepped up the challenge this time around, doubling the length of

each round and adding the fullcontact stipulation. For more than seven hours, he came up against fellow Thai boxers, including former world champions, as he amassed an incredible tally of three-minute consecutive rounds with only 30 seconds rest between each one.
