GIVING: Bradford Metropolitan Foodbank founder, Lashman Singh, saw more than £100,000 worth of food donated to the cause last year but warns that 2014 may need even more
Foodbank founder warns ‘there’s a great number of people in need’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
As the public begins to feel the pinch from the festive period, a Bradford foodbank is appealing for more donations to help feed the city’s most deprived. In 2004, local resident Lashman Singh set up the Bradford Metropolitan Foodbank and in less than a decade, the charity has already helped feed tens of thousands of households across the city. Relying only on donations, and stock bought by the charity, the group has seen the number of food parcels double year-on-year since 2011, with 2014 predicted to
be the biggest drive to date. After initially launching the Curry Project in Bradford in 1991, which fed people at set locations on a weekly basis, Mr Singh realised that there was still a great number of people suffering because they could not travel to the site.

ripped my heart out” Father talks about his grief as his five-year-old daughter dies in his arms after doctors insisted she just needed Calpol for viral infection
By Andleeb Hanif
editor@asianexpress.co.uk
A former Bradford man has spoken to the Asian Express about the anger, and subsequent heartache, his family has had to endure following the misdiagnosis of his fiveyear-old daughter which ultimately led to her death just a couple of days later. 43-year-old Marshal Aashtar, who now lives in Redbridge, Essex, took his daughter Fizzah Malik, a fun-loving sweet child, to see their GP at Ilford Medical Centre when she developed a high temperature, rash on her neck and sharp pain in the right side of her abdomen. He was told that all she needed was Calpol and ibuprofen as it was ‘just a viral infection’. When Fizzah failed to recover, mum Ruby and Marshal decided they would take their little girl to an emergency drop-in centre at King George Hospital in Ilford. The doctor examined Fizzah, who by this time had the rash on her tummy and gave the allclear that she didn’t have Meningitis. Fizzah’s dad says that he was told by the doctor: “I have children of my own brother, don’t worry, it’s just a viral infection. Leave it to God and she’ll be better.” But the next day she began throwing up. Marshal says: “She was sat clutching her tummy and rocking back and forth whispering ‘Allah… Allah…’ “She’d never done this
before and we were quite alarmed. We rang the GP’s surgery wanting to speak to a doctor straight away, but the
receptionist wouldn’t even put us through.” The father carried his daughter downstairs and laid her on the sofa whilst he warmed up a cup of milk for her. He joined his daughter in the living room and sat amongst the floor cushions. “My beautiful little princess slid off the sofa and lay in my lap. Within a few minutes she suddenly looked up at me and her eyes rolled back,” said the heartbroken dad. Fizzah’s father attempted mouth-tomouth resuscitation but was unable to breathe life into the little child. Marshal says that his wife and sons, Hasnain (16) and Haider (14) are grief-stricken and utterly heartbroken with the loss of their little

medical treatment given to his daughter. The Asian Express, on behalf of all its readers, would like to send their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of little Fizzah Malik. Rest in peace little angel.

Green is clean
A cash injection of £364,000 has been awarded to improve facilities at three green spaces in Leeds. Lovell Park, Kirk Lane Park and Dunkirk Hill are all set to benefit from the funding. The money has come from house builders as part of open space improvement contributions from new housing developments and will be used to improve the areas for use by local communities. Councillor Peter Gruen, Leeds City Council executive board member for neighbourhoods, planning and support services, said: “It is important that developers in the city who do not, or are unable to, provide sufficient open space as part of their development pay a financial contribution, which can be ring fenced for projects in that area. “The council has collected almost £12 million from housing developers over the last 10 years.” This money has been invested in a wide range of improvement projects from woodland planting, new paths and park furniture such as bins and benches, new play areas, skate parks, grass playing pitches and hard surfaced games areas.
Plan ahead for A61 route
Motorists are being advised to plan ahead this weekend due to the closure of a major road in Leeds. The A61 Scott Hall Road in Moortown will be closed this weekend, between 25th and 26th January, for essential maintenance. From Stainbeck Lane roundabout to Stonegate Road/Harrogate Road roundabout will be shut to traffic. King Lane is also due be closed from Stonegate Road and from Harrogate Road but should not prevent access to properties. Work to resurface the road has been condensed in to just two days in order to minimise disruption to the public. Restrictions will be in place on Saturday 25th January between 7am and 9pm and on Sunday 26th January between 7am and 5.30pm with diversion routes sign posted.
Be safe, get screened
Public Health Consultants in Bradford are encouraging more women to go for their cervical screenings as part of Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, between 19th and 25th January 2014. Over 40% of women aged 25 to 49 in the city of Bradford and around a quarter of women elsewhere in the district haven’t had a cervical screening within the last three and a half years. Around 20% of women in the Bradford district aged 50 and over haven’t had a cervical screening in the last five and a half years and a Cancer Research UK study stated women in this age group who failed to attend were six times more likely to end up with cervical cancer. Although the cancer rate has fallen significantly since improvements in the national NHS screening programme in the late 1980s, incidence rates for some age groups have risen in recent years.

Young Pakistani filmmaker visits Bradford on UK tour for her ‘Against the Grain’ film
DRIVEN: Pakistan’s emergence of new blood into filmmaking sees Iram Parveen Bilal as the Director of the movie gathering much-acclaim ‘Josh’
January 2014 - 3rd Edition
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Bradford played host to a young female Pakistani filmmaker, who has been in the midst of a metamorphosis in Pakistan’s film industry since the emergence of new talent and an independent film scene. Having studied in California, USA, the articulate movie director and script-writer, Iram Parveen Bilal, who has not been any part of a film fraternity whilst growing up, is one of the new breed of talent that is driven to steering a wave of change in Lollywood’s muchdeclined and dilapidated world. Iram is currently on tour across the UK with her debut film titled ‘Josh’, which is screening at Odeon cinemas. ‘Josh’ made history last year by becoming the first Pakistani film to be showcased at the London Indian Film Festival. Speaking about her film she said: “I feel that the narrative of much of Pakistan’s film industry is outdated and the new generation of Pakistanis is eager to change this. “Many of these new films have been largely focussed on powerful social narratives. Pakistan is always in turmoil and so you can either focus on the turmoil or go completely escapist in your narratives. But we’ve only just restarted the process of making films, and the more that are made, the wider the spectrum will get. “I had a shoe-string budget but fantastic people around me, and I believe we have managed to create a movie which shows both the affluent side of Pakistan as well as the other side of the coin.” ‘Josh’ is a film about class
separation, education, women’s rights, feudalism and the youth movement. The gripping tale has its fair share of twists and turns, but ultimately sends out both a powerful and positive message. Originally studying to become an engineer, Iram says that she was far too impatient to wait for a scientific discovery that would help mankind, and desired a more immediate reaction to her work. Being the daughter of parents who are both teachers, she said that education had always been a top priority and she feels that her experiences as a student both in California and Cambridgeshire have made her acutely aware of the negative perception of Pakistan and it’s people. Commenting on the global perception of Pakistan she said that she felt this was a weakness from Pakistanis within themselves. Lack of comradeship and due to bureaucratic and political boundaries, Pakistan inhibits itself from promoting the abundance of great work and people from within the country. She’s passionate about changing that. Commenting on being a new talent in Pakistan’s film industry, Iram said: “The most important thing is that it’s a movement from the ground up. It’s no longer just people from film families making films. That will hopefully lead to a greater variety of films, and ultimately a cinema which is thick and strong.”

Feeling the pinch
Asian-Express-Newspaper Put on hold
A scheme to make east Leeds homes warmer has become a casualty of government changes to energy efficiency funding. The £1.2million home insulation scheme that was due to start this month has been put on hold. The 150 properties in the Nowells area were due to have solid wall insulation installed by the council’s partner Keepmoat. This was being paid for by energy company obligation (ECO) funding. ECO places an obligation on energy companies to install energy efficiency improvements in lowincome households and areas, and in properties that are ‘harder to treat’. However, changes to ECO funding announced as part of the autumn statement mean that energy companies have cut the amount of funding available for the project by almost two thirds, now making the scheme unaffordable.
Cleaning up the bin confusion
Leeds City Council is seeking to clarify misleading reports and rumours about charging for bins. The council will continue to replace damaged or broken bins and provide bins to new properties free of charge. Residents already have one bin provided for each of the services they receive. If a resident requests an additional green or black bin, this will only be provided if residents meet certain criteria, for example, if they are a large family. It would undermine everyone’s efforts to reduce waste and recycle more if the council were to simply deliver extra bins on demand. The council’s executive board have been asked to formalise these existing practices in a set of policies when they meet on Wednesday 22nd January. The policies complement one another so residents understand how the council collects their rubbish and recycling and what they need to do too.
Books on prescription
One in four people have a mental health problem and January in particular is a difficult time for some. Many people are anxious about financial problems and the cold dark winter can add to feelings of depression and fatigue. Calderdale libraries are now participating in Books on Prescription, a new national campaign where your GP, Nurse Practitioner or other health professional can prescribe self-help books, which are available in many Calderdale libraries and can be borrowed for free. The Books on Prescription scheme provides self-help books, all expertendorsed and supported by the Department of Health, for a range of common, mild or moderate mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, anger and some eating disorders.

@AsianExpressUK Instant messages to surge this year
Instant messaging services on mobile phones will carry more than twice the number of messages sent by text in 2014, according to global predictions by Deloitte. As 50 billion instant messages are set to be dispatched, 21 billion text messages are expected to be sent a rapid growth from 2012 when 11 instant messages were sent for every 10 texts, the firm said. While instant messaging services such as WhatsApp and Snapchat may win the battle for volume this year, text messaging will be victorious in revenue terms, according to the predictions in the technology report which will be launched tomorrow. Text messaging is expected to continue to generate significantly greater revenues until 2018, by which point global text message revenues are expected to have started falling. Deloitte expects instant messaging services on mobile phones to continue to supersede text messages and all other forms of communication, including email and phone calls. Despite the burgeoning volumes of messages carried over instant messaging services, text messages are expected to generate more than £60 billion in 2014, equivalent to approximately 50 times the total revenues from all instant messaging services. Deloitte predicts that the fastest growing part of the smartphone market in developed countries will be among the over-55s. Nearly half (47 per cent) of this group will own smartphones by 2014, an increase from 40 per cent in MayJune 2013. The first ever text was sent on December 3 1992, when Neil Papworth, a 22-year-old British engineer, used his computer to send the message ‘Merry Christmas’ to an Orbitel 901 mobile phone.

Keep Syria Warm
A group of students from Bradford spent a few more hours in college than their classmates last week as they gave up their Saturday to help a local charity prepare hundreds of items to be shipped off to Syria. Around 50 teenagers and a handful of staff members, from Carlton Bolling College headed back into their weekday habitat where they helped with the sorting and packing of tonnes of donated items. Volunteering for the Keep Syria Warm project, launched by the Intouch Foundation in association with the Keighleybased Al Hikmah project and Dawah North, students spent more than two hours organising the goods before they were sent off to some of the world’s most vulnerable. Items such as food, drink, medicine and clothes have all been donated since the scheme was launched, with three containers worth of goods already sent over to the warravished country. Last Saturday’s contribution will help fill the fourth huge container as more than 120 boxes were needed to pack all of the donations.
Osman Gondal, Founder and board member of the Intouch Foundation, was delighted with the enthusiasm of the students and hopes that this was just one of many projects the college will be involved with in the near future. “All these kids gave up their own time to help out with the Keep Syria Warm initiative and for that we are of course very thankful,” he said. “The college got in touch with us because they wanted to get involved with the initiative and of course we were more than happy for them to do so. “The students came in and sorted everything out and did a brilliant job. It took them approximately two and a half hours to complete and they did a phenomenal job. “To see the children giving up their own time was great and the drive they had really motivated everybody involved.” Hanif Khan, community and partnerships manager at Carlton Bolling College added his praise for the students and spoke of how the college became involved with the project. He said: “It was actually a group of students who
approached some members of staff in the week before the event asking if they could do something for Syria,” he explained. “We have worked with Osman and the Intouch Foundation before and as they were currently involved with the Keep Syria Warm campaign it seemed the perfect thing for us to help with. “On the Friday before the big pack, the Intouch team dropped off a huge range of goods from the Keighley Warehouse and our students and staff brought it inside to store for Saturday. “On Saturday tens of students from all the years, as well as teachers and members of the local community came on down to help sort the vast amount of clothes which were then loaded into the van, ready to be sent off to Syria.” He added: “To see our students involved in something like this was a very proud moment as when they came together, they gave 100 per cent. “Not only were they giving up their own time but they were character building and learning all the day and that is really important.”

Bankside’s Got
Talent
By Ashley Grint

Auditions begin at local Harehills primary school
Singing, magic, comedy and even beat-boxing were just some of the talents on show last week as a Leeds primary school finally launched its much anticipated talent show. Bankside’s Got Talent has been in the planning for months and it finally arrived last week as almost one hundred pupils signed up to take part in the inaugural event. The three-form entry school began the audition process with pupils, in groups or as individuals, showcasing their talents in front of an esteemed judging panel made up of teachers. Ms Charlotte Fisher, SEN teaching assistant; Mr Chris Florey, deputy head; Ms Lorna Creed, Year 5 teacher; and Mr Salik Miah, EYFS teacher, were all issued with the role of casting their watchful eye over the acts. With an array of prizes on offer for the finalists, and winner, contestants took to the stage, and with the odd ‘Susan Boyle’ moment it proved an incredible success Reception and Nursery teacher, Mr Salik Miah,
has been instrumental in helping to organise the contest and explained how thrilled he was to see so many pupils ‘coming out of their shells’ to show off their special ability. “It has been really hard to cut down the numbers because all the children were fantastic and really tried their hardest,” he explained. “It has been great to see the confidence in the children and a lot of them really express themselves in a way that we have never seen before. “On a personal note I really enjoyed it. As a reception class
teacher, I don’t often get to see some of the older pupils so it was wonderful to see the whole school getting involved, with all ages taking part from reception to Year 6.” He added: “We certainly had a couple of memorable moments which stuck out. Some pupils for example, who are quiet in class, all of a sudden got up in front of the judges and had a big voice or amazing talent that just wasn’t expected.” With almost 100 entries, the audition process was forced to extend over two days, with the second group of contestants set to audition on Friday 24th January. From there, the acts will be whittled down to a much smaller group, which will then be split into four with each judge taking on a group and act as mentor. The final is set to take place on Thursday 13th March where finalists will once again perform for the judges, including a special guest yet to be announced. If anybody would like to get involved with Bankside’s Got Talent or could donate a prize please contact the school on 0113 336 8383.

Students go yellow with mad-hatter-style headwear to raise funds
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Staff and pupils at a Bradford college donned yellow clothes and crazy hats to support a cancer charity and rustle up some funds for the worthy cause. Students and staff at Carlton Bolling College sold daffodil pins to raise funds for the Marie Curie Hospice, Bradford, raising an incredible £645.82 It costs over £3.5 million per year to run the Marie Curie Hospice, which cares for over 1,100 local people every year. They look after terminally ill patients at the end of their lives, and provide emotional and practical support for their families, completely free of charge. Year Achievement Leader Caroline Headley said: “We chose to raise money for Marie Curie as the year 12 Health and Social Care
students had visited as part of their assignment work – we were surprised about the costs of running the hospice on a daily basis and wanted to help in any way we could. “It is a charity close to the heart of the school as a member of staff had recently passed away in the hospice and we wanted to show our support for the fantastic work that is done by the staff.” Community Fundraiser Rebecca Ross said: ‘We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone
at Carlton Bolling College for raising such a fantastic amount for the Bradford Hospice.” If your school would like to get involved and sell daffodils during the Great Daffodil Appeal in March, Marie Curie would love to hear from you. Asian’s takeover the TV screens Kumars, Eastenders and Corrie welcome new faces to enhance their storylines
COMPLAINTS: Albert Square’s newest resident, Shabnam Masood, has already been causing controversy in the BBC soap since returning last week
In what seems like a recordbreaking week for Asian storylines, three of the most watched programmes on television have all focused in on the new families on the block. Perhaps most notably, on Wednesday 15th January, the longawaited return of the controversial Kumar’s finally arrived. With almost 400,000 people tuning in to Sky One, Madhuri and the gang returned to evening entertainment for the first time since 2006 when they left BBC2. The only difference now is that the family no longer resides in their Wembley home but above the father’s Hounslow gift shop. Guests on the opening show included Daniel Radcliffe, Olivia Colman and a rare appearance from Chevy Chase. Seven years ago the general consensus was that ‘you either love them or hate them’, and now it seems nothing’s changed with a huge variation of responses on social media about the Kumar’s. Elsewhere, back on terrestrial TV, Rakhee Thakrar debuted as Shabnam Masood on Eastenders as the character made a return to Albert Square for the first time since leaving in 2008. Zahra Ahmadi, who used to play the role, left after just 14 months because of a lack of storylines yet the new Shabnam already looks to be offering a new venture for the outspoken resident. On Tuesday, Shabnam told her
RETURN: The Kumars are back on Sky One
father, Masood Ahmed, that he shouldn’t have dated a white woman (Carol). Cue the complaints. The BBC acknowledged the complaints yet stuck by the storyline adding that the matter is due to be tackled in upcoming episodes. “We received complaints from some viewers who were unhappy with a comment made by Shabnam…,” a BBC statement read. “Shabnam has returned from Pakistan with a renewed religious faith, devoutness and with some strong views. In this episode, Shabnam's comments came from her personal beliefs, but as viewers will see in future episodes, she is strongly challenged on her views by her father Masood.”
With both shows showing heightened interest it is Coronation Street which will be welcoming a piece of history to their soap next as the street’s first Muslim family gets ready to move in next month. Jimi Mistry, who currently plays fitness trainer Kal, will welcome his family to ITV’s most famous cobbles as Corrie prepares to open its doors to some new cast members. Marc Anwar, who recently appeared in Hollywood blockbuster Captain Phillips, is the only named family member so far, and will play Kal’s father, Sharif. With Asian television stars rising up the ladder, watch out for exclusive interviews in upcoming issues of the Asian Express with some of the screen’s biggest names.

136 law firms forced to close Leeds and Bradford solicitors publically named by the Solicitors Regulation Authority By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has taken the unusual action of publishing the names of 136 firms that are being forced to close. The companies are being shut down as a result of failing to secure professional indemnity insurance (PII) by the October 1st deadline and did not obtain new cover during the Extended Policy Period (EPP). The EPP was introduced for the first time this year and gave firms an extended period of indemnity insurance for 90 days. Firms that did not obtain new indemnity cover during the EPP, namely by 29th December 2013, had to close their practice and are not insured to practise after that date. In early January, brokers raised concerns over the SRA’s handling of the PII renewal process after the regulator admitted it had lost track of some uninsured firms (8th January 2014). The SRA does not normally publish the names of closed firms because firms have an obligation to inform clients and
others that they are closing down. Their decision on this occasion to publish the names in the interests of protecting consumers and third parties. Publishing the names adds an extra layer to the protection already in place. The regulator said most of the firms involved have co-operated with the forced wind-down process the SRA imposes when insurance is not secured, but that there were a “small number of firms that failed to close properly and they are subject to ongoing robust action”. There has been some confusion over how claims arising from firms that have failed to shut down as the SRA has prescribed would be handled. It is thought that the SRA’s discretionary compensation fund would kick in but the SRA’s rules state that the maximum grant that may be made from the fund is £2m, which would cover sole practitioners but represents a £1m shortfall on the statutory cover required for ABSs and LLPs. Among the firms on the SRA’s list are Leeds-based Rafique Partnership Solicitors Co Ltd, Devers & Co Solicitors, Kelly & Co, Richardson & Co Solicitors
and Bradford-based Megsons Personal Injury Ltd. The SRA is carrying out a full analysis of all those firms that entered the EPP and the way the legal profession is insured will be examined in the High Court this year in a major test case that could have implications for how all firms obtain indemnity cover. Firms are aware that they should not undertake work without insurance, although clients have protection in these circumstances. If anyone has concerns that these firms are continuing to practise, they should inform the SRA via report@sra.org.uk and disciplinary action will be taken if that is the case. If clients believe these firms are continuing to progress their matters, they should contact a new solicitor immediately to take over the case.

Police Watchdog set to investigate Bradford manslaughter case

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
The police watchdog is set to investigate the way West Yorkshire Police handled the shocking case of a four-yearold boy who was left to starve to death by his mother and decompose in his cot. Mother-of-eight, Amanda Hutton, was jailed for 15 years last year after she was found guilty of the manslaughter of her youngest child, Hamzah Khan, as well as the neglect of five of her other children.
The body of Hamzah was found in 2011, nearly two years after his death, decomposing in a cot in the family home. During the 43-year-old’s trial in October 2013 it emerged that a number of agencies had been in contact with the family, prior to the discovery of the body. It is reported that West Yorkshire Police had also received allegations of neglect before 2011 yet did not follow up on the complaints. This information has led the Independent Police Complaints Commission
(IPCC) to launch its own investigation into the force’s handling of the case. The IPCC also said it would look at why the case was not referred to them in 2011. The watchdog said it contacted West Yorkshire Police after Hutton was jailed to ask about complaints the force had received. IPCC commissioner Cindy Butts said: “The death of Hamzah Khan was a truly shocking example of the most cruel neglect imaginable and at the heart of it lies the loss of a young life.
“Our investigation will examine what action West Yorkshire Police took and also why the contact was not referred to us in 2011.” Detective Chief Superintendent Andy Brennan, head of West Yorkshire Police Professional Standards, added: “West Yorkshire Police referred this matter to the IPCC in November last year and they have decided this will be an independent investigation which we will fully support and assist in any way we can.”

Time for a trip to the museum
An 18th century precision pendulum clock, which played a valuable role in helping to solve one of the greatest scientific challenges of the age, is now on permanent display at Leeds City Museum. Built by famous clockmaker John Harrison and his brother in 1727, the longcase clock No.2, will be showcased, as part of the ‘John Harrison, the
Clockmaker who changed the world’ display which will celebrate the timepiece’s contribution to accurately determining longitude at sea. This complements the displays at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich (part of the National Maritime Museum) that are dedicated to navigation, precision timekeeping and John Harrison. It is the only display outside
of London about John Harrison, and, by chance, is near to his birthplace, Foulby, Wakefield. For many centuries the dilemma of not being able to accurately determine longitude had cost nations a fortune in lives, ships and cargoes lost. In 1714 the Longitude Act was launched by the British Government, offering a king’s ransom (£20,000) for a practical solution.

Beauty Top Tips HOME REMEDIES FOR DRY CRACKED HEELS
Dry, cracked heels are the most frequent concern. If these cracks, called fissures, become severe, they may cause bleeding, infection and pain when standing or walking.
What causes dry, cracked heels? • Cold weather and indoor heating. • Ill-fitting shoes and boots. • Improper daily care of the feet. • Standing on your feet all day. • Since this is such a common problem, here are some tips that may help. 8 tips for dry, cracked heels: Heels will move around in shoes and boots that are too big. This causes friction which forms dry calluse. Make sure your shoes and boots are properly sized so that heels don’t move but toes have wiggle room. Wash feet daily with warm, soapy water. Don’t use hot water because it dries out skin. Hot water is also harmful to diabetics and anyone with impaired circulation to the feet. Exfoliate the feet, especially the heels, while washing. Use a wash cloth, pumice stone, or loofah and rub the skin gently to slough off dead skin. Dry the feet thoroughly. Dry well between the toes since fungus and

bacteria like to grow in warm, moist, dark places. Moisturize daily with body lotion. Using a lotion that has urea increases the skin’s ability to hold in moisture. Avoid moisturizer between the toes. Put on cotton socks. Foot soaks are relaxing and helpful if done properly. Limit foot soaks to 10 – 15 minutes, 3 times a week. Soaking for long periods dries out the skin. Use a solution of 1/4 cup white vinegar and enough warm, never hot, water to cover the feet up to the ankles. Mild acetic acid in vinegar softens dry skin. Exfoliate. Dry thoroughly. Moisturize. Put on clean cotton socks. For an overnight treatment, try the following: massage olive oil mixed with a bit of white vinegar or lemon juice over the feet, concentrating on the heels. Honey is a natural moisturizer so if you want, put some in your mixture. Put on cotton socks. In the morning, wash it off. Exfoliate. Dry thoroughly. Moisturize.

Local sea cadets welcome new delivery Bradford Sea Cadets will be spending even more time on the water thanks to a donation of eight kayaks and two canoes by the Reserve Forces’ & Cadets’ Association (RFCA) for Yorkshire and The Humber. Bradford cadets spend more time on the water than some water-based units and this welcome delivery will ensure they keep their hours up. In the past, some cadets missed out due to a lack of kayaks but that won’t be the case any longer and, once qualified, they will now be able to progress onto canoes. The Pyranha Master TG kayak is ideally suited to the 10 to 18
year old cadets; its wide flat hull gives excellent stability and it is short, light, easy to turn and easy to paddle. Having gained experience and qualifications in the kayaks, cadets will now be able to move onto the new Old Town Saranac 146 canoes - with their thermoformed plastic hull these craft are durable, and paddle better than most recreational canoes on the market. Lieutenant Lynn Bullock, CO of Bradford Sea Cadets said she was overjoyed with the new boats. “These new kayaks and canoes will provide greater and new experiences for all the cadets and
Ice cube returns
The ever-popular Ice Cube returns to Millennium Square in Leeds this Friday, offering people of all ages and abilities the chance to experience the magic of outdoor ice skating and other thrill attractions, or just the chance to get active and healthy in the New Year. Organised by Leeds City Council with support from media partners Capital FM and the Yorkshire Evening Post and now in its 14th year, the centrepiece of the Ice Cube is a 500 square metre family-focused ice rink with adjoining nursery rink for children aged 8 years and under. Popular ‘penguin’ skating aids will also be
available to help youngsters on the nursery rink with their first steps onto the ice. All skate sessions are based upon one hour skating and includes skate hire. Tickets are priced at £7.50 adults, £5.50 children (12yrs and under) with discounts available for those persons with a valid LEEDSCard or BreezeCard. Tickets will be available to purchase on the day from the event ticket office although anyone wishing to attend are advised to get them early to guarantee their preferred skating session and avoid disappointment.
we are extremely grateful to RFCA for their support and for providing new and enhanced opportunities for our cadets, and for the many adult volunteer staff,” she said. Lieutenant Colonel Jeremy Bleasdale, Deputy Chief Executive of RFCA for Yorkshire & the Humber added: “Providing these canoes for the Bradford Sea Cadets has given the RFCA an ideal opportunity to demonstrate its widespread support to the cadets of all three Services. “It is enormously satisfying to hear of the benefits this initiative will bring to the sea cadets.”

World’s 10 most famous diamonds The Great Star of Africa - 530.20 Carats The Cullinan I or Star Africa diamond is the largest cut diamond in the world. Pear shaped, with 74 facets, it is set in the Royal Sceptre (kept with the other Crown Jewels in the Tower of London). It was cut from the 3,106-carat Cullian, the largest diamond crystal ever found. The Cullian was discovered in Transvaal, South Africa in l095 on an inspection tour of the Premier Mine. The Cullian was cut by Joseph Asscher
and Company of Amsterdam, who examined the enormous crystal for around six months before determining how to divide it. It eventually yeilded nine major, and 96 smaller brilliant cut stones. When the Cullian was first discovered, certain signs suggested that it may have been part of a much larger crystal. But no discovery of the "missing half" has ever been authenticated.

The Orloff - 300 Carats This exceptional beauty is slightly bluish green in colour and exceptionally pure clarity. Sourced in India and Moghul-cut, the gem may be found in the Diamond Treasury of Russia in Moscow. There are so many historical episodes involving the Orloff. First, it may have been set at one time as the diamond eye of Vishnu's idol (one of the Hindu Gods) in a sanctuary temple in Sriangam, before being stolen in the 1700s by a French deserter. He went to Madras, and sold the stone quickly to an English sea-captain for £2,000. Time passed, the stone arrived at Amsterdam where the
The Regent - 140.50 Carats
Although it is now surpassed in weight by other famous diamonds, the exceptional limpidity and perfect cut of the Regent give it an incontestable reputation as the most beautiful diamond in the world. Discovered in India in 1698, it was acquired by Thomas Pitt, Governor of Madras, who sent it to England where it was cut. In 1717 the Regent purchased it from Pitt for the French Crown. It first adorned the

Koh-i-Noor (Mountain of Light) - 105.60 Carats An oval cut gem which is now part of the British Crown Jewels. The name of this diamond means "Mountain of Light" and its history, dating back to1304, is the longest of all famous diamonds. It was captured by the Rajah’s of Malwa in the sixteenth century by the Mogul, Sultan Babur and remained in the possession of later Mogul emperors. It may have been set in the famous Peacock Throne made for Shah Jehan. After the break-up of the Persian empire the diamond found its way to India. It may have traveled to Afghanistan with a bodyguard of Nadir Shah, who fled with the stone when the Shah was murdered, to be later
offered to Ranjit Singh of the Punjab in exchange for military help (which was never delivered). After fighting broke out between the Sikhs and the British, The East India Company claimed the diamond as a partial indemnity, and then presented it to Queen Victoria in 1850. When the stone came from India, it weighed l986 carats; it was later recut to l08.93 carats. It was first worn by the Queen in a brooch. It was later set in the State Crown, worn by Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary, and 1937 was worn for by Queen Elizabeth for her coronation. It is kept in the Tower of London, with the other Crown Jewels.
The Idol's Eye - 70.20 Carats A flattened pear-shaped stone the size of a bantam's egg. Another famous diamond that was once set in the eye of an idol before it was stolen. Legend also has it that it was given as ransom for Princess Rasheetah by the Sheik of Kashmir to the Sultan of Turkey who had abducted her.
The Taylor-Burton - 69.42 Carats Russian count Grigori Orloff, an exlover of Empress Catherine the Great was residing. He heard about rumours of the stone, and he bought the diamond for £90,000 and took it back to Russia for Catherine's favour. Catherine received his gift and had it mounted in the Imperial Sceptre. She gave a marble palace to Grigori in exchange for the Orloff. However, Grigori couldn't get Catherine's love.
This is a pearshape diamond sourced at the Premier Mine, Transvaal, South Africa. It was founded in 1966 in the Premier Mine in South Africa. The rough, which weighted 240.80 carats, was cut into a 69.42 pear shape diamond. As you might guess from the name, Richard Burton bought and named this stone as a gift

Rare blue diamond found in South Africa mine By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
An exceptional 29.6 carat blue diamond, recovered earlier this month in South Africa, is the latest rare stone to be found in the famous Cullinan mine, located about 25 miles north-east of Pretoria. “This stone is one of the most exceptional stones recovered at Cullinan during Petra's operation of the mine,” the mining company said. Petra Diamonds said in a statement this week: “The stone is an outstanding vivid blue with extraordinary saturation, tone and clarity, and has the potential to yield a polished stone of great value and importance.” It’s expected that the stone will sell for a high price as a stone unearthed by them last year, a 25.5 carat blue diamond, sold for $16.9m (£10.3m) in 2013. The Cullinan mine has produced hundreds of large stones and is famed for its production of blue

‘Wake-up call’ for Bradford hospital New liver machine could see biopsies eradicated within ten years
A liver machine, unveiled last EXAMINATION: Dr Sulleman Moreea with specialist nurse week at Bradford Royal Infirmary, Karl Ward and patient Joyce Varley who suffers from an has been described as a ‘wake-up auto-immune disease which attacks the body's bile ducts call’, allowing patients at Bradford Teaching Hospitals the ability to avoid invasive and potentially painful liver biopsies. The new £85,000 Fibroscan liver machine will use the latest technology to examine patients’ organs without the need to undergo surgery of any sort. The machine works by placing a probe on the patient’s skin which provides immediate, non-invasive information on the state and condition of the liver. By using this method, patients can get a quicker diagnosis and avoid having to undergo an invasive liver biopsy, which has been the standard way of assessing liver tissue up to now. Consultant hepatologist, Dr Sulleman Moreea, a committee member of the liver section of the British Society of Gastroenterologists, estimates that 20 per cent of Bradford patients should no longer need a biopsy. He welcomed the equipment for its quick and pain free technology and hopes that the machines will allow for the elimination of liver biopsies altogether within five to ten years. He said: “Fibroscan represents the latest in cutting edge technology and “Up to now we have used liver patients have to spend the day in with local anesthetic, carrying a risk is good news for our liver patients biopsies to determine the nature and hospital having blood tests, and it of discomfort and a smaller risk of and for those people who we suspect extent of liver disease. needs to be carried out by an expert internal bleeding. might have liver disease. “A biopsy is time consuming as radiologist after the skin is injected “However, the Fibroscan is a
completely painless and noninvasive procedure which can be completed in 15 minutes in our outpatient department.” There are currently three Fibroscan machines in operation in West Yorkshire in total yet Bradford has become the first in the region to use it to measure fat content in the liver. “Diagnosing liver disease and damage as early as possible is paramount in giving patients the best chances of recovery,” added Dr Moreea. “Patients can instantly see pictures of the liver and the figures generated by the machine. This can be the incentive they need to change their lifestyles to improve their liver health. “While all other causes of death are falling, the number of people dying from liver disease is rising.” Liver disease is the fifth biggest cause of death in England and Wales after heart disease, cancer, stroke and respiratory disease.

Four teachers from Pakistan arrived in Halifax earlier this month as they paid a special visit to the town and a local primary school. The teachers, from the Hattian Bala area of the South Asian country, were visiting for two weeks, working closely with the staff at Parkinson Lane School on all aspects of school life. Organised by the school and the Read Foundation the teachers also embarked on residential visits with the pupils, looking at the different methods of teaching which could then be replicated ‘back home’. During the visit, the local school organised a fundraising dinner event, in which the four visiting teachers were special guests amongst a host of celebrities from the world of politics, sport and entertainment. Staff at the school contributed to the fundraising efforts by preparing food and waiting on guests who were treated to a community play performance by pupils from Years One, Five and Six. The night was a huge success, raising more than £2,000 in total, of which £1,000 was donated to the Hattian Bala School and the other half to the White Ribbon Campaign. Another highlight of the visiting teachers stay was meeting the Mayor of Halifax, Councillor Ann Martin and her consort, Mohammad Naeem. Gugsy Ahmed, Head Teacher at Parkinson Lane, was delighted to welcome his fellow educators to the school. He said: “We are delighted that we are able to host the teachers and continue to support and develop the school in Hattian Bala. “I am also very pleased that my

Parkinson Lane School has also been sponsoring the education of 28 pupils at this school whilst staff have paid visits to a number of Read setups.

SERIOUS: Leeds business owner, Barry Hirst, has spoken out about the need to tackle hate crimes quickly and effectively to eradicate racism from society
www.asianexpress.co.uk
A Leeds employer, who was forced to sack a ‘racist’ staff member last month after a string of incidents, has spoken about the need to stamp out racism in all aspects of life. Barry Hirst, owner of a gadget repair shop in the city centre, has been working in Leeds for more than 30 years and has had to face a number of racist incidents throughout his working life. As a Jew, the 52-year-old explained that he has not only witnessed racist behaviour towards some of his ethnic employees in the past but also directly towards himself and now hopes the public can get together to eradicate such behaviour. “I think any type of racial discrimination, no matter what it is, should not be accepted within the workplace,” he said. “I find, because I am Jewish, that any type of racial discrimination hurts me and therefore feel that it will have the same effect on all other ethnic communities as well. “We have a responsibility not to accept this attitude especially in the workplace. It is something I have a zero tolerance approach to and believe others do too.” Most recently, Mr Hirst had to terminate the contract of one of his employees after he was found to have used derogatory language towards some of the Asian staff whom worked in one of the gadget stores. Alongside a couple of incidents, not relating to racism,

the unnamed employee was sacked yet what followed was a further tirade of abuse, including a death threat towards one of the other members of staff. Mr Hirst explained: “It started off in casual conversations where this former member of staff was being abusive about Asian members of staff, saying ‘P**i’ in conversations, and things like ‘it would be better to get rid of all Asian members of staff’. “He had a warning and I told him he cannot discriminate and use that word again… then he went quiet for some time. “A little while later I then get
a couple of text messages which mentioned that word again which concerned me. For that reason, as well as some incidents within the shop as well…I told him I was going to terminate his contract because he was not suitable.” After the member of staff was released from his position, he then sent a shocking voicemail message to one of his former Asian colleagues, accusing the staff member for getting him fired. The message included the statement: ‘When I get my hands on you I will pull your head off you P**i c**t, s**t down your neck and stab you
up.’ Despite reporting it to the police as soon as he heard about the incident, Mr Hirst feels that the response to the matter has been too slow adding that this ‘serious crime’ should have been investigated immediately. “If a police officer, or a member of their family, was threatened in any way or form, whether that is stabbing or punching, I’m sure police would react within minutes or hours,” he said. “Yet here, someone from an ethnic background has been threatened to be stabbed, as well as being racially discriminated, yet it has taken them a month to get their act together. “How can they say that they are prioritising tackling racism in the community when something like this has taken place? “I feel quite strongly that any type of racial behaviour or threat to someone’s life should be immediately stopped in its tracks.” The Asian Express followed up the enquiry with West Yorkshire Police who offered reassurance that the matter was still under investigation and was being taken extremely seriously. Adding: “All crimes of this nature are taken very seriously and anybody who has information regarding hate crimes is urged to call PC Sedha on 101.”

More than one hundred guests gathered at the Pakistani Community Centre last weekend as the new initiative ‘W Childcare’ was launched in Bradford. The new Ofsted regulated after-school club is the first of its kind to be held at the establishment, on Jervaulx Crescent, Bradford, where children as young as five can enjoy state-of-the-art education every weekday after school and on Saturdays. Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Khadim Hussain, was the guest of honour at the official launch, presiding over the grand opening and praising the project.
Issuing an impassioned speech on the need to encourage children to excel in education, Cllr Hussain commended W Childcare on the initiative. Nazim Ali, who is a qualified Careers Adviser by profession and is a prolific community activist, spoke at the event and acted as compere for the proceedings. As a local resident, Mr Ali said: “I was honoured to have been approached to be the event compere. “Education is so important for all children, and the access to it is crucial. I only wish that I had access to such provision when I was growing up.”
Meanwhile, Deputy Leader of Bradford Council, Cllr Imran Hussain, also issued a statement, which was read on his behalf, praising the project describing W Childcare as a ‘great initiative’ which receives his ‘full support’. Tuition is available for older attendees at W Childcare, up to the age of 15, with help offered towards GCSEs in subjects such as English, Maths, Science, Arabic and Religious Studies. The Saturday Club will include extra-curricular activities such as educational visits to museums, archery, horse riding and honey making. At the official launch, on the
12th January, almost £250 was raised in support of Syrian refugees, a charity which attendee Dr Hadia Aslam, who works closely with the individuals involved, spoke about passionately. Youngster, Haleema Zeb won one month of free tuition to the value of £240 and received her voucher from the Lord Mayor. Also taking place on the day were free events for children, such as bouncy castle, face painting, henna, stalls and refreshments, whilst parents and the Lord Mayor were taken on a guided tour by the W Childcare staff.

FOLLOWING HEADTEACHER’S ARREST SCHOOL CRITICISED FOR MISLEADING PARENTS In the latest of the ‘Kings Science Academy’ saga, the Chairman of the Governors has been criticised for informing parents that its principal, who was arrested last week on fraud allegations, had been ‘exonerated’. Sajid Hussain Raza, headteacher and founder of the flagship free school at Lidget Green, had actually been ‘bailed pending further inquiries’, rather than being ‘released without charge’ after being arrested on Thursday 9th January. The phrase ‘released without charge’ is used if police release a suspect when no further action will take place. A police spokesman confirmed that Mr Raza had been bailed pending further inquiries, rather than being released without charge. The police had originally
launched their inquiry into the school after the Department for Education (DfE) found last year that the school submitted fabricated invoices to claim thousands of pounds of public money. An investigation by the Education Funding Agency (EFA) found ‘serious failings’ in the financial management of the school. Kings Science Academy was one of the first free schools to open in September 2011 and was praised by Mr Cameron on his visit in March 2012. Education Secretary Michael Gove has now confirmed that Kings Science Academy was without a chairman of governors for over a year after its opening. Now, the patron and benefactor of the school, Tory vice chairman Alan Lewis, 75,
who was himself arrested last year over an historic rape allegation but later cleared of all charges, has come under fire. Bradford Member of Parliament David Ward told MPs that Mr Lewis had amended an audit report into the school by a company he recommended. During education questions in the Commons, he asked Michael Gove for clarity over a comment made by a spokesperson for Alan Lewis who said that at no time did Mr Lewis have responsibility for financial management or governance at Kings Science Academy. Mr Ward said: “If, as I have been told, the report by the auditors recommended to the school by Mr Lewis was presented directly to him and amended by him as a result of his comments, would you agree that this provides evidence of both financial management and governance within the school?” Mr Gove replied: “Mr Lewis was responsible for
commissioning a report, which you quite rightly draw attention to, which played a part in helping to ensure that Kings Science Academy moved from a difficult position to a better one, but I must stress that I don’t want to say anything that might prejudice an ongoing police report.” Mr Ward, wants the DfE to be more transparent over the ongoing matters involving the school and wants the statement on Kings Science Academy’s website to be corrected.

Just so we’re clear
I
n the recent case of Newbury –v- Sun Microsystems the Court provided some words of caution in relation to the formation of contracts and the need for clarity when parties are seeking to settle proceedings. It is a common aspect of litigation that parties will make offers in an attempt to settle. Indeed, throughout litigation the parties are encouraged by the Court to seek to settle the dispute by alternative methods of dispute resolution. Instead of engaging in more formal methods of alternative dispute resolution, such as mediation, parties often negotiate settlement in correspondence. In the Newbury Case the Claimant had issued proceedings against the Defendant in sum of $2,028,760 in respect of unpaid commission. The Defendant issued a counterclaim against the Defendant alleging overpayment. The proceedings had been ongoing since 2011 and previous attempts at settlement had been unsuccessful. However on 3 June 2013, shortly before the parties were due to commence an 8 day trial, the Defendant’s Solicitor wrote to the Claimant’s Solicitor putting forward an offer to compromise the entirety of the claim. That offer letter was not marked ‘subject to contract’. The offer put forward by the Defendant was a payment of £601,464.98 to the Claimant in full and final settlement plus an additional payment in respect of the Claimant’s legal fees. The letter expressly stated ‘such settlement to be recorded in
a suitably worded agreement’. The Claimant’s Solicitors wrote back to confirm that the offer was accepted and they would forward a draft agreement for approval in due course. On 5 June 2013 the Claimant’s Solicitor sent a formal Order which recorded the compromise of the proceedings and provided for a payment to be made to the Claimant in full and final settlement of the claim together with an additional payment in relation to legal fees. The Defendant’s Solicitor responded to confirm that the proposed Order was not agreed. Instead the Defendant’s Solicitor had drawn up a separate Order and a formal Deed of Waiver in which additional terms in relation to taxation and a requirement of confidentiality were inserted. Such terms were not included in the offer and as a result the Claimant’s Solicitor rejected the new proposed Deed of Waiver and the additional terms incorporated it in. A dispute arose between the parties as to whether or not the correspondence exchanged on 3 June 2013 led to the creation of a binding contract. The Claimant contended that the letters were clearly demonstrative of a contract, the parties had an intention to create legal relations and the acceptance of the offer created a binding contract. The Defendant’s position was that the use of the words ‘such settlement to be recorded in a suitably worded agreement’ meant that the offer was not an offer which was capable of acceptance as
further terms (i.e. the settlement agreement) needed to be negotiated and until such an agreement had been approved and signed, the offer was not binding. The Court agreed with the Claimant and held that the correspondence gave rise to a binding legal contract. The Judge stated that had the Defendant’s Offer letter been marked ‘subject to contract’ it would have been clear that the terms of the Offer were not binding until a formal agreement was entered into. This case acts as an important reminder of the need to ensure that you are not unintentionally creating a contract and for the terms of any offer letter to be clear. Ideally any offer made should state clearly all of the conditions which are attached to that offer because once the offer is accepted it may be too late to seek to impose additional terms into that compromise.

A Bitcoin education Out of circulation An English university has become the first public educational establishment in the world to allow students to pay their tuition fees with the digital currency bitcoin. Students at Cumbria University attending two courses examining the role of complementary currencies will be allowed to use the units. Last year the University of Nicosia, a private university in Cyprus, announced it would accept bitcoin, but the University of Cumbria is the first public university to do so, and for courses that are already accepting students. Cumbria's system for accepting payments, via the bitpay system, is already operational, the university said. “We believe in learning by doing, and so to help inform our courses on complementary currencies, we are trialling the acceptance of them,” said professor Jem Bendell, the founder and director of the Institute for Leadership and Sustainability, which will run the two courses. “Some support bitcoin due to its speed and cost, others due the new era of financial freedom it could enable.”

Indian officials have taken the decision to pull older rupees from circulation in an attempt to tackle the growing problem of counterfeit money in the country. In a statement issued on Thursday 23rd January, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said the old notes, released before 2005, would become voided by the 31st March with all banks across the nation tasked with exchanging the bills for customers. A spokesperson for the central bank, Alpana Killawala, spoke to CNN about the news and believes it will be beneficial for everybody in society with an emphasis on increased security. “There are many new features
that didn't exist in those old notes,” Killawala said. The central bank has called on the public ‘not to panic’ and emphasized the affected banknotes are still legal tender. In a 2013 report published by the central bank, the issue of counterfeit money in India was highlighted as a big concern with the issue on the rise. The UK is just one of a number of nations which will also be moving into modern currency as polymer notes are introduced in 2016. More than 25 countries already use the special bills, including Australia, Mexico and Canada. Plastic notes are more durable and are cheaper to produce over time.

fter receiving a glowing Ofsted report in their latest review, places at Madni Muslim Girl’s school are going fast yet there is still time for children to be registered for enrolment before September 2014. With a growing reputation as one of the leading educational establishments in West Yorkshire the two-form entry school can cater for children from two-years-old up until 16. With free funding available for preschool places, for children of two-years-old, and the early years, for children between three and five, the school has been commended extensively for its home-to-school environment which has allowed pupils to quickly settle into education. In its first ever Ofsted inspection last year, the pre-school achieved a ‘Good’ rating overall. Primary and Secondary school setups also ensure children are able to benefit from the through-school initiative of which Madni Muslim Girl’s school is one of the only Yorkshire establishments to offer such a service. Minimal fees are charged for students at the independent school which currently provides state-of-the-art teaching for more than 250 pupils. With a ‘Good’ rating for all aspects in the secondary school’s November 2013 Ofsted report, including for pupils’ achievement, behaviour and personal development, the school also achieved the highest grade of ‘Outstanding’ for pupil’s welfare, health and safety. The report also reflected the fantastic GCSE results from the last academic year,
Madni Muslim Girls High School 40-42 Scarborough St, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, WF12 9AY Tel: 01924 468 516
with special mention for the dedicated teaching staff that have helped to create a thriving school in the heart of Dewsbury. Facilities at Madni Muslim Girl’s school also guarantees pupils access to state-ofthe-art equipment on site. Two wellequipped laboratories, a fully stocked library, newly-refurbished ICT suites and a large outdoor space are just some of the growing list of fantastic facilities available. Headteacher, Mrs Mirza has been delighted with the progression of the school’s achievements over recent years yet warned that spaces were limited for the upcoming academic year. “We are still recruiting for September 2014 now, and have spaces available in the pre-school, early years, primary and secondary,” she explained. “Anybody wishing to come down and have a look around should contact the school as we are always more than happy to welcome aspiring pupils and parents to the premises.” The school will be holding a special admission afternoon, between 1pm and 3pm on Thursday 13th February, where prospective parents are invited to come down and take a look around the premises.

@AsianExpressUK ‘It’s Cameron’s fault for the floods’
A British far-right party has suspended a local councilman who blamed recent severe flooding on the government's legalization of gay marriage. David Silvester of the United Kingdom Independence Party, who defected from PM David Cameron's Conservative party in protest at the move to allow same-sex couples to marry, made the claim in a letter to his local newspaper. “I wrote to David Cameron in April 2012 to warn him that disasters would accompany the passage of his same-sex marriage bill,” wrote Silvester. He added: “It is his (Cameron's) fault that large swathes of the nation have been afflicted by storms and floods. He has arrogantly acted against the Gospel that once made Britain 'great' and the lesson surely to be learned is that no man or men, however powerful, can mess with Almighty God with impunity and get away with it.”
CHARGED: Rosdeep Kular is charged with the murder of her three-year-old son, Mikaeel, after she had reported him missing nearly two days before his body was found
Murder Charge By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
The mother of threeyear-old Mikaeel Kular appeared in court earlier this week charged with the murder of her son. Rosdeep Kular, charged under her married name Adekoya, went before Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday 20th January where she was also charged with trying to defeat the ends of justice during a brief private hearing. Kular made no declaration or plea and was remanded in custody following the hearing. She will appear in front of the court once again on Tuesday 28th January. As is common for first appearances in Scotland,
Mikaeel Kular’s mother appears in court the appearance was closed to both the press and the public. Kular’s youngest son, Mikaeel, was reported missing by his mother last week, sparking a huge search for the toddler who was initially believed to have just got up and walked out of his home during the night. Yet, after almost two days of searching, the body of the young boy was found more than 30 miles away from the family home in Drylaw, Edinburgh, buried behind Rosdeep’s sister’s home. Assistant Chief Constable Malcolm Graham
confirmed the news at a 1am press briefing saying: “The investigation into the disappearance of Mikaeel Kular has been wideranging and fast moving. “As a result of inquiries the body of a young child was recovered in Fife just before midnight. “We strongly believe this to be the body of Mikaeel. “A person has been detained in connection with the recovery of the body and members of Mikaeel’s family have been informed. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with them at this time.” Hundreds of volunteers had helped search the area
Police have questioned two men and released them on bail following allegations of racist remarks on micro-blogging site Twitter during the search for three-year-old Mikaeel Kular. The two men, 19 and 26, who have not been named, were held over ‘making offences of a racial nature’. They were first reported to Edinburgh Police during the search for the missing toddler, before officers in Scotland then worked alongside Hampshire

Prison for Islamic teacher
An Islamic teacher has been found guilty of committing sexual activity with a child during lessons. Suleman Maknojioa had denied allegations that he touched the girl. But after a week-long trial and around two hours of deliberations, a jury unanimously found the 40-year-old defendant, of Audley Range, Blackburn, guilty of the five charges. Speaking after the verdict, Maknojioa said he had 'no comments' to make. Preston Crown Court had heard how the teacher would stroke the leg of his victim, put his hand under her headscarf and squeeze her chest. The defendant had maintained that he only ever touched the girl to pat her on the back when she had done well or to show her praying positions. Maknojioa, who was released on bail, will be sentenced on the 19th February.

Chief Supt Mark Williams, Police Scotland Edinburgh Divisional Commander, said: “Any reports of racist, offensive and abusive comments made online will be thoroughly investigated and those responsible will be brought to justice. “If you commit an offence we will investigate it and you will be prosecuted.” Meanwhile, Derbyshire Police

added: “Officers arrested the 26-yearold Heanor man this morning on suspicion of committing a racially aggravated public order offence. “Members of the public in Edinburgh had complained about the content of some Twitter messages linked to the disappearance of three-year-old Mikaeel Kular. “The man was questioned and released on police bail while the Crown Prosecution Service considers the case.”
Two women have been charged in relation to funding terrorist activities in Syria, Scotland Yard has said. Amal Elwahabi, 27, and Nawal Msaad, 26, both from northwest London, were arrested on January 16. Msaad was detained at Heathrow Airport while Elwahabi was held later that day in northeast London. Scotland Yard said the pair is accused of “becoming concerned in an arrangement as a result of which money was made available or was to be made available to another, and they knew or had reasonable cause to suspect that it would or may be used for the purposes of terrorism.” The alleged offences are said to have taken place between January 13 and 16 and relate to terrorist activity in Syria, a spokesman said. He added: “SO15, the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command, will continue to pursue individuals and networks in the UK seeking to support terrorists engaged in the Syrian conflict.”

Britain urged to open 400-year-old state files Eminent British scholars have challenged the government to release a cache of secret files dating back almost 400 years that they say could spur a reappraisal of some contentious episodes of British colonial history and the Cold War. The foreign ministry only publicly admitted the existence of the so-called "special collection" of some 600,000 dossiers in 2011, when an historian came across a 45-year-old memo that referred to it. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) says it did not have the resources to sort through the files, despite laws requiring disclosure, but that it is now reviewing them to prioritise material of greatest public interest for release. But a group of 27 scholars from the British Academy used a letter to the Guardian newspaper to demand that in a free society all available records be released to ensure a full account of Britain's colonial past or the espionage mysteries of the Cold War. "The government must release these files," said Richard Evans, a professor of history at the University of Cambridge who is an expert in German history and one of the signatories to the letter. "A full and objective account of Britain's colonial past, involvement in the Cold War and many other important historical topics will only be possible when they are freely available," he told Reuters. "Of course, I can't say how they might change our view of the past since I don't know what's in them." From Britain's imperial past and the African slave trade to the betrayals of KGB double agents during the Cold War, the true historical worth of the documents is unknown, historians said. "Because we haven't seen full listings of these documents, I don't want to speculate but the fact is that we do know these are very important materials," David Anderson, a professor of history at the University of Warwick, told Reuters. Held in six boxes, for example, could be important material related to slavery. Simply entitled "Slave trade reports", the boxes contain 18 files from the period 1662 to 1873. Three years ago, Anderson was an expert witness in a court case brought against the British government by 5,200 Kenyans who say they were tortured by Britain's colonial forces during the 1950s Mau Mau insurgency. Forced to make public documents on Kenya after Anderson found a 45-year-old Whitehall memo which referred to the materials, the FCO
also disclosed the existence of hundreds of thousands of other hidden files. Some parts of Britain's history could need to be revised in the light of the new files, Anderson said. The unexplained secrecy of such a large cache of documents has fuelled suspicions that they could contain surprises for those Britons with a benevolent view of British foreign policy. In Anderson's view, standout items in the trove could include nuggets to do with the Cold War, perhaps shedding new light on the activities of Guy Burgess and Donald Maclean, two spies acting for the Soviet Union. "The trouble is we don't know what's there," Margaret MacMillan, a professor of history at Oxford who is also part of the group, told Reuters. "Are there things tucked away in there which would actually make me change my view on, for example, the British role at the Paris peace conference (after World War One), because I thought I'd seen everything that was there to be seen." The scholars contrasted the secrecy over the documents with the revelations triggered by fugitive U.S. spy contractor Edward Snowden about the power of Britain's GCHQ eavesdropping agency, which is overseen by the foreign secretary. "While the GCHQ story tells us that the government has wholly unexpected capacities to unearth information about its own citizens, the right of citizens to investigate UK foreign and colonial policy over the last 150 years and more is clearly being denied," the scholars said in the letter. "Those of us who work on the history of some other countries are used to government obstruction when it comes to researching official papers, but the UK is supposed to be a free society. The writing of full and impartial accounts of the Cold War, Britain's colonial past, and other key subjects depends on access to all the available records." When asked why the special collection had been held for so long, an FCO spokesman said: "These special collections have accumulated over time. They have been transferred into the FCO archive to ensure the records are preserved for potential selection and transfer to The National Archives. "Historically the FCO has concentrated on the release of files in the departmental series and resources have not been available to review and prepare the special collections for release."

Investigation deadline extended MURDERED: Bijan Ebrahami was killed last year by his neighbour, Lee James, despite reporting his danger to police several times before the fatal attack
Police watchdog to widen Bijan Ebrahami investigation After the shocking murder of a man, wrongfully labeled as a paedophile, the police watchdog has decided to widen its investigation into the treatment of the victim. Bijan Ebrahami was murdered last year before his body was set on fire by his attacker. Lee James, 24, of Capgrave Crescent, Brislington, who admitted murder, was jailed for a minimum of 18 years, whilst Stephen Norley, 25, admitted assisting an offender and was given a four-year jail term at Bristol Crown Court, in November. Prior to his death Mr Ebrahami had repeatedly contacted Avon and Somerset Police for help and now the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it ‘remained vital’ that it got to the truth. The IPCC said it was expanding its probe - to include officers' treatment of the 44-year-old, both in the run-up to his death last July and in previous years. The watchdog said three police constables, who visited Mr Ebrahami the day before his death, have been interviewed under caution for the potential offence of misconduct in a public office. IPCC commissioner Jan Williams said: “As well as interviewing officers the evidence has dictated that we must
look at the force's policy and approach to these sorts of incidents and complaints and any potential organisational failings that Avon and Somerset need to deal with. “I know that the chief constable of Avon and Somerset is keen to expedite matters as soon as possible, both in terms of the individual officers concerned and in restoring the confidence of the wider community. “My priority is to ensure a thorough and effective investigation that benefits the family, the wider public, the community and the police. “We hope that a witness appeal later this month will assist us further,” Ms Williams added. However, Avon and Somerset's police and crime commissioner, Sue Mountstevens, added her concern regarding the amount of time spent on the investigation, yet did welcome the ‘thorough’ review. “I am now told it may not be until May and I am concerned with the length of time Mr Ebrahimi's family are waiting for answers,” she said. “I would imagine that many local people may feel that this investigation has been pushed into the long grass. “With the spotlight firmly on the integrity of policing, it is vital the IPCC reports back to the family and local people as soon as possible.”

As news reports the suspected murder, torture and mutilation of 11,000 detainees by the Syrian regime, British Muslim students and Islamic Relief and community representatives have delivered a UK-wide call for action signed by thousands to 10 Downing Street on Tuesday the 21st January. This was followed by an address from Secretary of State for International Development, Justine Greening, in which she set out a £2m grant for Islamic Relief’s work supporting Syrian refugees in Jordan with education, shelter and cash assistance. “I think we could be seeing the start of a significant change in the way ordinary Muslims are engaging and campaigning with the government,” says Islamic Relief’s UK Director Jehangir Malik. “Mosques, students and community members increasingly want to do more than just give money when they see suffering or injustice. “They are now demanding political solutions and taking peaceful direct action. ARIES March 21st - April 20th The outlook remains optimistic as developments bring you a sense of real achievement. Relationships look great as Venus and Mars help to enhance your personal magnetism and put you in a gregarious mood. Venus, the planet of love and romance throws a pleasing light on love and creativity, make the most of this phase. TAURUS
April 21st - May 21th Unexpected developments or a lucky break could have a favourable long-term effect on your prosperity and perhaps cause you to alter your goals and place your expectations at a higher level. You may feel at times that the results of your efforts are not coming up to expectation. However, this seems like a temporary blip in what is otherwise a highly constructive state of affairs.
GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st Developments during this week are likely to make you feel rather restless, perhaps because you have allowed yourself to fall into a routine that is now becoming jaded. If so, then the hint of change will be extremely welcome, even if it might entail an element of disruption. Adaptable and versatile, as you are, it is unlikely that even a major change will faze you. CANCER June 22nd - July 22st Due to the retrograde motion of Jupiter in your sign, you will be in a thoughtful mood and for some of you, esoteric knowledge will beckon. For others there is a possibility that an old love might make contact out of the blue. Your financial situation will need sorting out - this is not a good time to go out spending what you do not have. LEO July 23st - August 23rd Your communication sector is all-abuzz with planetary energies firing you up preventing you from sleeping properly. Give yourself plenty of physical outlets to drain off some of the excess mental stimulation. The Sun in your sign will make you feel like you can finally settle into a more grounded and steady routine instead of letting your schedule run you. VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd With planet Mars in Libra, it is a time to get to grips with personal finances and put them on a solid footing. On the work front, too you may find yourself getting your affairs in order. The accent’s very much on relationships, you and a partner may become embroiled in financial arrangements or some other nitty—gritty aspect of your relationship. LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd You’re likely to receive insights into where everything is going and this may shape your life for months to come. There are opportunities to expand your sphere of operations and you and a partner could really go places. Professional and financial pressures will begin to ease. SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd Amorous affairs continue to be highlighted - whether or not this leads to a lasting relationship depends much on your own personal maturity and circumstances. Efforts to restructure and transform your lifestyle are more likely to meet with success. Experience you have built up in the past will now stand you in good stead. SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st An exchange of opinions ought to prove very enlivening at this time. An influence that should help to enjoy the 'nicer' side of others as bring out the best in friends, colleagues and partners alike. A wind of change may be in the air; attention should turn to the wider world and benefits come from broadening of horizons and mental stimuli. CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th There is a definite expansive trend where money is concerned, so do not be surprised if this turns out be a time of fortunate opportunities and lucky breaks. Keep your assertive inclination under control as conflict and disagreement could be sparked off by your short-sightedness. Think carefully about the implications of your actions. AQUARIUS
January 21st - February 19th This is a good time to get away from usual routines and seek a retreat for a few days. All the better if you are interested in such things as meditation, yoga and therapies that help you to get in closer touch with your inner self. This will have a beneficial effect on your physical and psychological well-being.
PISCES February 20th - March 20th You may find yourself hard at work behind the scenes, although that may not be apparent to others. You may find yourself caught up in a whirlwind of activity, with opportunities to advance on both the inner and outer level. There’s a sparkle to your social life and you will have fun communicating with others.

UK food prices among the highest in Europe
Global food index compares 125 countries to reveal the best and worst places to eat healthily By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
People in the UK are facing among the highest and most volatile food prices in Western Europe, according to a new global food database released this week. The ‘Good Enough to Eat’ index is the first of its kind, comparing data from 125 countries to create a global snapshot of the different challenges people face in getting the food they need to eat. The index, compiled by Oxfam, comes at a time when one in eight people in the world go hungry despite there being enough to feed everyone, and highlights how distribution and prices are important factors. It brings together data on whether people have enough to eat, can afford to eat, the quality of food and the health outcomes of people’s diet. Overall The Netherlands, followed by France and Switzerland in joint second, are the best places for people to eat in the index, while Chad is the worst closely followed by both Angola and Ethiopia. Hairy Biker chef Dave Myers has just returned from Cambodia, which is positioned 89th overall, to see Oxfam’s projects to help boost
food security. He said: “It’s terrible to think that so many people go hungry in a world that produces more than enough. I have seen how bringing simple solutions to Cambodia to help farmers double rice production and make more from what they grow. All of this can change lives for good but a concerted global effort is needed if we are to end the shame of hunger which is clearly affecting people everywhere - even in the UK.” The UK is among the worst performers in Western Europe on whether citizens can afford to eat, sharing 20th position with Cyprus, and with only Austrians and Icelanders fairing worse. At a time of austerity and with more than half a million people using food banks, the index reveals how people in the UK face higher prices for food compared to other goods than almost everyone in Western Europe. Only Austrians and Italians face the same level of pressure while Cypriots have to pay more. The UK also ranked in the bottom half of all OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries on food price volatility. This record on food prices means that the UK’s combined score puts it in 13th position. Instead, The
Netherlands, France and Switzerland are joined in the top 10 per cent by Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Australia, Luxembourg, Portugal, Italy and Ireland. All enjoy top marks for their lack of malnutrition and under-nourishment and for access to safe water, while other measures, including obesity, have lowered their final results. At the bottom of the table, one in three children are underweight in Chad, where food is relatively more expensive than anywhere else, apart from Guinea and Gambia. Chad shares fourth worst position on the quality of food consumed. Oxfam’s Chief Executive Mark Goldring said: “This index lays bare some of the challenges that people face in getting the food they need regardless of where they come from. It reveals how the world is failing to ensure that everyone is able to eat healthily, despite there being enough to go around. “The UK’s failure to make the top table is a shocking indictment for the world’s sixth richest country. With a record number of people turning to food banks, the government must carry out an urgent inquiry into how welfare changes and cuts are exacerbating food poverty and deepening inequality.”

WEATHER ALERT: Britain braced for 70mph winds, ice and snow
Winds of up to 70mph, snow showers and dense fog are expected to blight the whole of Britain this weekend as the tumultuous winter weather continues. The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning after an
Atlantic frontal system gathered pace and headed this way. High-speed gusts and almost four centimetres of rainfall are expected to sweep across the nation on Sunday and plunging temperatures will add ice and, in some highlands,
snow to the mix. The deluge, which is expected to start at 6am, will strike first in the South West, hitting coastal towns that bore the brunt of the Christmas and New Year storms. Southern parts of England and
Wales are also on high alert after a flood and wind warning was also put in place for the region for Friday. Bands of heavy rain and wind are also forecast to move eastwards across the South West of England, with more than three centimetres
anticipated in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset. Land in the region is yet to recover from the soaking it received during the last week of December and first week of January.

He’s not going anywhere
The Pakistan foreign office on Thursday said there was no chance of the government releasing Shakil Afridi, the doctor who helped the US track down former al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, due to pressure from the US. A bill recently signed by US President Barack Obama proposes to withhold $33 million in assistance to Pakistan on account of Afridi's detention, Dawn online reported. Speaking to reporters, Tasneem Aslam, foreign
office spokeswoman, said the Afridi issue was subjudice, adding that he would not be released despite pressure from the US. Aslam added that Pakistan did not accept the US demand for Afridi's release in exchange for aid. Afridi had helped the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to run a fake vaccination campaign in Abbottabad, a month before the US forces raided a compound and killed Osama bin Laden in 2011.
Vietnam’s biggest ever drugs bust
ACTION: Protestors took to the streets following recent rape cases which have been highly scrutinised across the country
Village elders ‘order’ gang rape
A 20-year-old Indian woman was raped by 13 men last week after orders from her village’s chief as punishment for having a relationship with a man from a different community. On Monday 20th January, the assault took place in West Bengal’s Birdhum District, yet it was only reported to police on Wednesday. A police spokesperson said the victim’s husband was tied up in the village square whilst the assault took place throughout the night in a mud house. “We arrested all the 13 men, including the village chief who ordered the gang rape. The accused have been produced in court which remanded them to jail custody,” Birbhum's Superintendent of Police, C. Sudhakar, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The victim's family told reporters that the woman was assaulted because the village court believed she had violated the rules of her tribe after beginning a relationship with a man, not from her community. In northern parts of India, illegal village councils known as ‘Khap Panchayats’ act as de-facto courts settling rural disputes on everything from
Shocking assault leads to protests across India
land and cattle to matrimony and murder. The couple was ordered to pay a fine of 25,000 rupees (£500), said the victim's mother, adding that the village head then ordered the rape of her daughter. The victim told police: “People from the village, men my father's age, and those who I knew as neighbours, as uncles and brothers raped me.” Past examples of actions which have brought these councils under major scrutiny in the past include things such as banning western clothing and mobile phones from women, right through to the hanging of young couples in so-called ‘honour killings’. India toughened laws on sex crimes in March last year following the infamous fatal gang rape of a woman on a moving bus in Delhi in December 2012. The case led to nationwide protests for better security and has helped sparked national debate about gender inequalities in India. The issue was highlighted in local media again last week after a 51-yearold Danish tourist was gang-raped in central Delhi by at least five men whom she had asked for directions. West Bengal recorded the highest number of gender crimes in the country in 2012 accounting for 12.2 per cent of the whole country. Despite such high figures the conviction rate following rape crimes is as low as one per cent.
Judges in northern Vietnam condemned 30 people to death and jailed dozens more on Monday for trafficking over 12 tonnes of heroin, delivering the verdict outdoors in what was the Communist country's biggest ever drugs trial. All 89 defendants were found guilty of trafficking heroin between 2006 and 2012 and each appeared flanked by two police officers at the mass trial in Quang Ninh province, which was held in the yard of a detention centre, rather than a courtroom. Thirteen received life in jail and 46 were given either prison terms of up to
20 years, or warnings, the government said in a statement on its internet site. Vietnam has long been used as a connecting point for moving heroin between Laos, Myanmar and China to other Asian countries and Australia. Its courts give harsh punishments to traffickers, which until recently included death by firing squad. It now uses lethal injection. The trial began on 3rd January and prosecutors had initially sought death sentence for 34 people. The drugs were trafficked between China, Laos and Vietnam in various types, including heroin and synthetic drugs.
No healthcare in Nepal
Thousands of doctors across Nepal have stayed away from work to support a colleague who has been on a hunger strike for days demanding reforms in medical education. Tens of thousands of patients have been deprived of medical services because of the doctors' strike. Only emergency services are being provided. The Nepal Medical Association, the umbrella body of doctors, says the
striking doctors are supporting Dr Govind KC, who has been on a hunger strike for the past 10 days. He is demanding the removal of the government-appointed head of the Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital in Katmandu, the capital, and an end to government interference in medical education. The doctors' strike started Sunday. They say it will continue until their demands are met.
Fatal Pakistan bomb More than 20 die in latest sectarian attack
EXPLOSION: Bombs can rip through vehicles instantly and have been used by terrorist organisations to cause substantial damage and loss of life
A bomb killed at least 22 people last week as it exploded through a bus full of Shi’ite pilgrims as sectarian attacks continue to rise in Pakistan. The bomb exploded near a bus carrying pilgrims returning from neighouring Iran to their home city of Quetta in Pakistan, officials said. At least 20 people were wounded, said the assistant police commissioner for Mastung district, Shafqat Anwar Shawani, and many
of the victims were women and children. The attack occurred approximately 35 miles southwest of Quetta, the provincial capital. Sectarian attacks are on the increase in Pakistan, where minority Shi'ites make-up around 20 percent of the 180 million people. Human Rights Watch said more than 400 Shi'ites were killed in 2013. They included many professors, doctors and children
shot on their way to work or school. The violence is worst in the western province of Baluchistan. Militant groups like Lashkar-eJhangvi say they are fighting for a Sunni theocracy and Shi'ites should leave the country or be killed. Many sectarian groups are theoretically banned but their leaders still address rallies and grant interviews.

More troubles at Air India
A Boeing 787 Dreamliner operated by Air India this week returned to London due to a communications problem, but has since been operational, the state-run carrier said on Wednesday. The aircraft's transponder failed during the flight on Sunday from London to New Delhi, Air India spokesman G.P. Rao said, adding there was no immediate safety concern. The plane was back in operation on Monday after engineers fixed the transponder, he said. The 787 has suffered a series of glitches since its launch two years ago. Overheating batteries in
some planes forced the grounding of its worldwide fleet last year. Flights resumed in April 2013. Discount airline Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA (NWC.OL) said on Tuesday that a fuel leak on a 787 Dreamliner caused a flight from Bangkok to Oslo to be delayed by 19 hours. Air India, which is the only Indian carrier to operate the Dreamliner, has seen glitches in its 787 models including a windshield crack and a body panel falling off during a flight last year. Boeing is upgrading the software in some of Air India's Dreamliner jets to improve their performance.
Snow batters the US
Residents of the northeastern United States on Wednesday dug out from a deadly winter storm that dumped more than 15 inches (38 cm) of snow in some places, with frigid temperatures forcing school closings and extensive flight delays and cancellations. At least two deaths were blamed on the weather, which made roads treacherous. Near Emmitsburg, Maryland, a driver lost control and slammed into a tractortrailer, state police reported. In Versailles, Kentucky, a woman's car hit a tree after skidding on an icy highway, local police said. "It's brutal out here,"
said Ian Chapin, 28, an appliance repairman braving stiff winds as he pumped fuel into his work vehicle at a gas station outside Philadelphia. The deep chill and heavy snow on Wednesday closed schools in Philadelphia and many suburbs throughout New Jersey, Rhode Island and other states. New York City pushed toward normalcy, opening its schools, but the snowstorm that dropped 11 inches (27 cm) of powder in Central Park touched off some complaints about unequal treatment by new Mayor Bill de Blasio.
26 hanged on terror charge Twenty-six people were executed in Iraq last week after being convicted of terrorism-related crimes, the Iraqi Justice Ministry have confirmed in a statement. The deaths came despite international criticism of the country's increasing use of capital punishment. Amongst those executed was Adel alMashhadani, a militia leader from who had become ‘famous for his part in sectarian crimes’, the statement said. The statement also quoted the justice minister, Hassan al-Shimari, as saying those executed included Adel-alMashhadani, a former anti-al-Qaeda Sunni leader in Baghdad who was sentenced to death in late 2009 for murder and kidnapping. “All 26 who were executed carried out brutal terrorist crimes against the Iraqi people, and they were tried and condemned, and the verdict was approved by the presidency,” Al-Shammari said. Iraq has been engulfed in violence for many months. The United Nations said 2013 was the deadliest year in Iraq since 2008, with almost 8,000 people killed in violence, most of them civilians. Fears of all-out sectarian war have increased since fighting broke out recently to the west of Baghdad in Anbar province, where al Qaeda-backed militants and Iraq's security forces have been battling for control of Falluja and Ramadi.

Trampled by Elephants
An American tourist has been found dead in a reserve in Thailand after apparently being trampled by elephants, park rangers said. The woman went missing after leaving a camping ground in Kaeng Krachan National Park, the country’s largest, last week. Seventy people were involved in a five day search for her and when her body was recovered, the severity of the injuries indicated she was likely trampled to death. “Her arms, her wrists and other parts of the body were broken, so we assumed she was trampled by elephants because no humans could
have caused such powerful damage to the body,” said police Colonel Woradet Suanklaai. “Looking at the pictures she took in her camera, we see a lot of animals, birds, snakes, lizards,” he said. “We assumed she wanted to take pictures of elephants because that's what the Kaeng Krachan National Park is famous for.” The woman, who was in her 20s, was travelling alone. Kaeng Krachan covers nearly 3,000 square metres (32,300sq ft) of forest. It is about 124 miles (200km) southwest of Bangkok.

Progressive talks The Israeli Prime Minister and the King of Jordan met last week to continue with their negotiations regarding Israel and the Palestinians. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and King Abdullah II met in Amman, Jordan, following the visit of US Secretary of State, John Kerry to the region. Mr Kerry met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Netanyahu in hopes of working out a framework agreement for the resumption of negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis. Netanyahu returned to Israel after the discussions, which also looked at economic cooperation between the two countries and other regional matters, one of his representatives said. Speaking after the meeting, Netanyahu’s media representative said: “The Prime Minister emphasized that Israel places a premium on
Palestinians and Israelis seek peaceful negotiations security arrangements, including Jordan's interests, in any future agreement that will take into consideration the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel, signed 20 years ago.” A statement from Jordan's royal court added that the meeting continued to build on the work of: “Continuous consultation and coordination between the King and all the parties involved in the peace process, considering His Majesty's keenness on achieving tangible progress that meets the aspirations of the Palestinian people and at the same time protects the high interests of the Jordanian kingdom.” During his visit to Jerusalem earlier this month, Kerry met multiple times with Abbas and Netanyahu yet declined to speak with media in regard
to the meetings. Kerry has offered a proposal based on five months of intensive consultations with Israelis and Palestinians since the resumption of the peace process last summer. Earlier this week, U.S. officials reacted angrily to comments attributed to Israel's defense minister criticizing Kerry's efforts to broker a peace agreement. Speaking to a local paper Moshe Yaalon said: “American Secretary of State John Kerry, who turned up here determined and acting out of misplaced obsession and messianic fervor, cannot teach me anything about the conflict with the Palestinians.” Yaalon later apologised for the comment.

In a latest report, an oil company has predicted the death of the petrol-powered car will be in 2070. Shell has forecasted that by the year 2070 conventionally-engined cars could be killed off. Death of petrol cars steps into the world of hydrogenpowered vehicles, with the FCV Concept unveiled in almostproduction form at the Tokyo Motor Show last November. In theory, hydrogen vehicles will
offer customers zero emissions motoring without the range anxiety associated with electric cars. While a hydrogen-refuelling infrastructure is yet to be put in place in the UK, stations along key routes such as the
M4 and M1 will begin to emerge when the Toyota FCV arrives next year. However, Shell does continue to say the demand for oil has yet to reach its peak. ‘Entirely removing oil from road transport worldwide is a truly colossal undertaking. With reduced growth of travel demand, increased vehicle efficiency, and natural gas, electricity and hydrogen increasingly in use, liquid fuels for passenger road transport decline after a global peak in 2035.’
Successor to the 1 Series M Coupe? M-POWER: The BMW M2 is expected to go on sale in 2016 at around £50,000
A source has confirmed that a road-going version of the M235i Racing (a track-only customer race car) had been considered for production. However, the plans were scrapped when it was decided that it would “step on the toes of something else higher up the range.” A new BMW M2, shown in our exclusive illustration, is expected to use a twinturbocharged version of the M235i’s 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine. Maximum power output should be in the region of 380bhp, compared to the M235i's 322bhp figure, while leaving enough space to the 425bhp BMW M3 Saloon and M4 Coupe. However, it's also expected that the M2 will adopt much of the new chassis technology found in the M3 and M4, including an electronically

controlled limited slip rear differential dubbed Active M Differential. To keep the purchase price down, the new M2 may not come as standard with Adaptive M Suspension as standard, but it's expected that there will be a wide variety of settings available to the driver to alter the character of the car. The M2's predecessor was called the 1 Series M Coupé, as the 'M1' name was used on the company's iconic supercar from the late seventies. There is no official word on what the new junior M car will be officially named, but M2 is the frontrunner. The BMW M2 is expected to go on sale in 2016 at around £50,000 - ensuring it is distanced from the M3 and M4, which start at £56,175 and £56,643 respectively.

A new British sports car brand Former Land Rover Chief Designer responsible for the new design
An all-new British sports car brand is to launch in April this year, with its debut model – codename Project Judi – promising to "refresh the classic British sports car, for the 21st Century." Businessman and enthusiast, David Brown, has set up the company in his own name and brought an experienced team of engineers and designers on board. A whole new car has been developed from the ground up by David Brown Automotive. A bespoke body and interior trim have been designed, with all materials sourced from British suppliers. Production will be low-volume but the latest manufacturing techniques will be used alongside traditional craftsmanship. Alan Mobberley, Chief Design at Land Rover for 19 years until 2005, has been responsible for the design of the vehicle.
Automotive expert Envisage Group has also been involved with the development of the car for production. “I wanted all the impact and style of a classic sports car, but with modern capabilities and conveniences,” said David Brown. “This is what I want in a car, but it’s
not something anyone really offers. So, I’ve created it myself.” The car will be unveiled in April and will eventually be available to buy, in very limited numbers. More details, including a name and performance specifications, will be announced closer to the car’s launch.

Audi will reveal its 230bhp S1 quattro model in March, ahead of UK sales starting in May. Audi will unveil its long-awaited S1 hatchback model at the Geneva Motor Show in March, an inside source has confirmed. Powered by a 230bhp version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine found under the bonnet of the Audi S3, it will feature quattro four-wheel drive as standard.
As our exclusive image shows, the styling is a subtle evolution of the standard A1, with a deeper bodykit, larger intakes in the front bumper and an S1 badge glued to the grille. It is expected that the S1 variant will be available in both three-door hatchback and five-door Sportback guises with the option of several unique colours, plus quad exhausts. A dual-clutch S tronic automatic
gearbox will be offered, although it’s still unclear whether this or a six-speed manual will be standard fit. Due to be launched in Geneva alongside the all-new Audi TT, the new S1 hatchback should go on sale in the UK in May. There’s no official word on pricing or specification as yet, but a source suggested it will be similar to the Volkswagen Golf GTI, which means a starting price in the region of £27,000.

ENTRANT: Shalini Cameron will be running the Bradford 10k, helping raise money for Epilepsy Action, after seeing a number of close friends suffer from the condition
Keep on running By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A mother of two from Bingley has been training intensely over the winter months as she prepares to tackle the Bradford runs to raise money for a cause close to her heart. Shalini Cameron, 31, trains three times a week in preparation for the 10 kilometre challenge which will be raising money for Epilepsy Action – a charity which raises funds and awareness for epilepsy. Mrs Cameron has a number of close

friends who suffer from the condition which affects approximately one in a hundred people in the UK. The runs will be staged in the city for the seventh time in March with more than 1,500 runners expected to turn up on the day. For the Bingley resident, it will be just the second time she has completed the course yet explains why this year’s run will be even more special. “I have seen what it is like first hand for people who may be struggling with epilepsy,” she said. “It can be a very debilitating condition and affects people’s lives more than many know. “My friend has had episodes in front of me in the past and is not allowed to drive because of the condition. It might not seem a big hindrance but it can be when it comes to things like looking for a job, as travel is obviously limited. “I will be doing the run in a couple of months for my friend as they do help motivate me on.” The fitness fan has been in training throughout the past year and is eager to ‘give the run another go’ in 2014. “It was actually my friend, who suffers from epilepsy, that actually got me involved last time in 2009 and I will be doing it again this year for them. “Nowadays I am doing 10k, two or three times a week, and I just love it. I recorded a time of 50 minutes last time I completed the run and this year I know it will be tough to match that but I will try. “Anything under an hour really will be an accomplishment for me.” For more information about the Epilepsy Action Bradford 10k, set to be held on Sunday 16th March, including sign up details please visit epilepsy.org.uk/bradford10k or call the fundraising team on 0113 210 8800. The closing date for entries is Thursday 13th March 2014.

The gloom surrounding Manchester United's current predicament may deepen further after the club dropped out of the top three of Europe's top-earning clubs for the first time. United, 14 points behind Barclays Premier League leaders Arsenal and knocked out of the Capital One Cup on penalties by Sunderland, are now fourth in the Deloitte Football Money League behind leaders Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich based on income from the 2012/13 season. The money table has been compiled by Deloitte since 1997, and for the first eight years United were the biggestearning club in the world only to be overtaken by first Real Madrid, then Barcelona and now Bayern. The table has also recorded an astonishing rise in income by the Qatari-owned French club Paris St Germain, with earnings rocketing by a record 81 per cent to see the team rise from 10th to fifth in the table ahead of Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.
Final awaits for Wawrinka
Stanislas Warwinka edged Tomas Berdych in the tightest of duels to reach his first grand slam final at the 36th attempt on Thursday and set up a possible all-Swiss Australian Open title showdown against Roger Federer. Federer will have to get past world number one Rafa Nadal in the second semi-final on Friday first, but 28-yearold Wawrinka did his part by the narrowest of margins with a 6-3 6-7(1) 7-6(3) 7-6(4) victory over the tall Czech. There was nothing uneven about the battle between the seventh seed Berdych and eighth seed Wawrinka that followed on Rod Laver Arena in which three of the four sets were decided by tie-breaks. A resolute Berdych said after the game: “If I could tell what was the difference (between us) then I would be nearly a genius. “We both play great. We play a good match. Stan was the one that just took it, and that's it.” Asian

A Rochdale woman made history earlier this month after she became the first woman, from an Asian background, to officially qualify as an FA registered football agent. Shehneela Ahmed broke the mould last week after English football’s governing body officially recognised her in the profession and she now hopes that her advances will open up the door for more Asian women to follow suit. “At the time when I applied to become a Football Agent I wasn’t even aware that there weren’t any Asian females in the role,” she explained, adding she knew that there were ‘only few females registered with the FA’. “It’s only after I completed the course that I became aware of the fact and to me personally, this is a big thing. “It’s a golden opportunity for me to promote females from other ethnic backgrounds to do the same. People are becoming aware that the sports world is no longer just for men with more and more females now involved in the industry.” Born into an Asian Muslim family, Ms Ahmed grew up in a working class area
Pioneering solicitor takes first step into sport industry of Rochdale before heading to Staffordshire to study Law, going on to do a Legal practice Course at Guildford Law College. Initially working as an independent solicitor, the law professional is currently employed by one of the largest criminal Firms in the South West, working as a Duty Solicitor Criminal Advocate. Her first venture into the football industry is likely to pose previously unrecognized challenges yet for Shehneela; it is all part of the job. “It’s a challenge for me and I am looking forward to this. To date I have been dealing with Hardcore Criminals
so what can be so difficult when it comes to dealing with Footballers, Managers and Agents.” The former Lancashire resident added that she has now set herself a number of personal goals, besides that of promoting the industry amongst women. “I want to show the Asian Parents that the Sport Industry is not a bad profession for their children and they should encourage their child to enter it,” Ms Ahmed said. “It is a respected profession just like being a Lawyer or a Doctor. It is important that they get over any stigma which has surrounded sport in the past.”
Postponed Thailand sport suffers further setbacks Thailand’s top golf competition is just the latest sporting event in the country to have suffered a setback due to anti-government protests. Last week, Thai officials announced that the government had declared a 60-day state of emergency in hope of preventing the anti-government protests escalating for a third month. With the Thai Open set to be held between the 13th and 16th March, the $1million tournament will now be moved to a ‘more suitable date’ according to event organisers, whilst the classic venue, Thana City Golf & Sports Club, will remain the same. “We want to ensure the environment is stable in order to stage our world class tournament and national Open,” said Rungsrid Luxsitanonda, president of the Thailand Golf Association. “There are just six weeks to go before the tournament so it would be unwise to proceed with the current date.”
Last year, Thai national Prayad Marksaeng became the first golfer from the country to win the title for almost a decade. The tri-sanctioned event was scheduled to be the season-opener for both OneAsia and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO). Meanwhile, football has also taken a hit in the country as visiting Cerezo Osaka, of Japan, have cancelled their upcoming tour, which would have seen new signing Diego Forlan debut. “Cerezo were scheduled to hold the camp from 26th January to 7th February and are currently trying to arrange a new location and new dates,” Kyodo news agency reported. Despite the situation, the Thai Premier League will still begin next month on the 22nd February according to the league’s chairman. “We cannot postpone the start of the new season,” TPL chairman Ong-arj Kosinkha told local media, conceding the number of spectators would drop.
HOLDER: Prayad Marksaeng clinched victory at last year’s Thai Open yet will have to wait a bit longer before he can get out on the course this year

Back page story
HONOURED: Sohail was recently named as an ambassador for the Intouch Foundation, pictured here with InTouch National Mobile Soup Kitchen Manager, Faisal Tariq
Fresh look for 2014
“Growing up, watching the likes of Ronaldo and Messi, I saw these players, and yes they are very talented, but always remember there's a group of coaches who have helped them all the way,” he said. “I was just proud to become a coach. I love to be out there on a cold morning coaching and people might find that hard to believe but I love it.” Sohail studied sports technology at college, and worked with the Manchester United disabled supporters association. His passion for the Red Devils was further increased when he received a personal letter from former manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, commemorating him for his achievement in passing his coaching badges. The Manchester United legend is one of Sohail’s biggest idols and he said it was unbelievable to receive such a mention. Despite receiving praises from the highest level, it is in fact the grassroots game where the local coach is currently enjoying spending his time, helping children achieve their potential in football.

“I coach every day nearly and I love it,” he said. “To help local kids in the community develop their skills is my personal highlight. Every kid wants to be a footballer and I just want to help them in their quest. “The fact that they gain such enjoyment from football is great to see.” Earlier this month, the football enthusiast became the latest ambassador for the charity, the Intouch Foundation. Speaking about the foundation, Sohail added: “It's amazing the work they do. To stand out there once a week to feed the community is amazing; it's a great feeling.” Faisal Tariq, InTouch National Mobile Soup Kitchen Manager, added: “Sohail was selected as an ambassador for InTouch as he is a role model and inspiration to everyone around the world. “No matter what obstacles life has thrown at him he has never stopped chasing his dream, Sohail for me as one of our ambassador gives us the motivation to keep doing what we do best at InTouch Foundation which is being InTouch with those who are in need.”

Force India reveal new model for upcoming F1 campaign
STYLE: The VJM07 model will have its first official test session later this week
Sahara Force India revealed its dynamic new look last week, offering fans a first impression of how the VJM07 will look when it is officially presented at this week’s Jerez test session. The new livery brings a fresh trackside image for the team with the introduction of black alongside the traditional colours of saffron, white and green. “The VJM07 looks stunning and the new livery reflects the way Sahara Force India is evolving,” Vijay Mallya, Team Principal of Sahara Force India, explained. “I’ve always believed our cars have been the most eye-catching, but adding black as a main colour gives us a fierce new look.” Key to the new look is the
introduction of several commercial partners. “It’s been a busy winter for us on the technical and commercial front,” explains Vijay. “When I founded the team my first ambition was to launch the first Indian team on the grid, but the next stage in our evolution is to develop a global brand. “I think that ambition is reflected in the partners we are working with and our world class driver line-up. It certainly feels as though there is the potential for 2014 to be our strongest season yet.” As well as new colours, the changes beneath the skin of the VJM07 are even more extensive due to the new technical regulations. “The new rules have
presented us with a huge challenge, but I’m very proud of the approach we have taken and the direction of the technical team,” Vijay continued. “It will be fascinating to see how different teams have interpreted the rules and at this stage it’s impossible to predict who has done the best job.” Technical Director, Andrew Green, is quick to emphasise just how different the VJM07 is compared to its predecessor: “Almost every single part is a new design, from the front wing right back to the diffuser. The genetics of the VJM07 still lie in the 2013 car, but we've had to achieve the same results in a slightly different way.”

COACH: Sohail Rehman hopes to manage a football league club one day as he continues his progression as a coach
World’s first wheelchair-bound fullyqualified football coach By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A Keighley resident, who was forced to give up playing football after being restricted to a wheelchair, is now dedicating his life to helping others achieve success in the beautiful game. At just 21-years-old, Sohail
Rehman has become a pioneer for disabled sports coaches after he became the first wheelchairbound fully-qualified football coach in the world. Suffering from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), he was restricted to a wheelchair at 13-years-old after growing up playing football with friends in the street. From then, he has not only
