A ROYAL VISIT Princess Anne welcomed during two-day visit to West Yorkshire
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A business owner in Batley is offering a £10,000 reward for information that could lead to the return of 23 boat engines, stolen from his workplace in a ‘life-changing robbery’ last week. 69-year-old Sam Al-Kazhraji, arrived at his workshop, off
Brookroyd Lane, on Thursday 15th January to find his property had been targeted by thieves. The previous evening, a gang of robbers had used the site’s own forklift truck, to load goods onto the back of a lorry before driving them to an unknown location.

TOUR: The Princess was given a tour of the SKA Textiles factory during her visit
A Royal visit to Princess Anne welcomed during two-day visit
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
HRH The Princess Royal paid a flying visit to West Yorkshire last week, helping a family business celebrate 40 years of production, and commemorating an employment project in Bradford. On Friday 23rd January, she was warmly welcomed to the premises of SKA Textiles Ltd, in Huddersfield, and given a guided tour of the premises by Zeb Parvaiz. A family-run textile company, the business was founded by Khalid Pervaiz in 1975 in Dewsbury, originally specialising in knitting and dyeing yarns to produce heavy jacquard fabrics for ladies’ fashion wear. Today the company’s impressive array of materials is used by retailers such as Debenhams, Next, Arcadia Group, Marks & Spencer and Primark. Saj and Zeb Pervaiz, the founder’s two sons, are now largely responsible for running the business. Coinciding with the visit of The Princess Royal, Patron of the Textile Conservation Centre, was the launch of the company’s new corporate brand, focussing on ‘Made in Britain’. Zeb Pervaiz, who was recently awarded the Chadwick Lawrence Business Person of the Year, explains: “Due to our investment in

additional knitting capabilities, SKA Textiles is now moving into new sectors, which require specialist yarns and fibres. “As well as for ladies’ fashion, our fabrics are increasingly being used in upholstery; automotive seating; by the fire brigade; the MOD, and in the aerospace sector. “The textile industry needs to retain skills and talent here in the UK. We must look to bring young people into the industry, and encourage apprenticeships in the sector.” Meanwhile, on the previous day, The Princess Royal attended a special reception at the Bradford Royal Infirmary to celebrate the success of Project SEARCH.
The initiative launched in September 2013 offers young people with learning disabilities a nine month internship, where they undertake tasks in three different departments within the BRI and St Luke’s Hospital. In the programme’s first year, interns gained more than 900 hours of on-the-job work experience. Eleven students have graduated and six have since gone on to secure employment in a range of areas. On Thursday 22nd January, the Hft Charity Patron, had the opportunity to meet the interns and talk to those involved with running the course. The Princess also gave an

Brown bin collections
Garden waste collections are being rolled out to thousands more properties across Leeds this year as the city builds on its green reputation. Residents in up to 7,000 suitable properties will shortly receive a letter confirming that the brown bin service will be available in their area. Residents can opt out of the service if they believe it is not right for them. The bins are collected every two weeks between March and end of November when the service ceases for the winter. Grass cuttings, weeds, hedge trimmings, flowers, twigs, leaves and plants from brown bins are sent to local facilities to be turned into compost.
Sovereign Square development
It was a milestone moment for what is intended to be an oasis of calm for people to enjoy in a builtup part of Leeds city centre as the first ground was broken on the Sovereign Square green space scheme. A contemporary public square landscaped with a water feature, trees, shrubs and seating areas will be created at the former temporary car park on Sovereign Street near to the new KPMG headquarters. Not only will it provide additional green space in the city centre, it will strengthen links with the South Bank and proposed city centre park to be created as part of the regeneration of the area.
Free ‘brekkie’ at school
Children and young people who attend schools and children’s centres in the Chapeltown and Harehills areas are now able to get a free breakfast in the city thanks to a new partnership organised by Leeds City Council. In order to help improve the health and educational attainment of youngsters in schools serving the most deprived areas Leeds City Council has joined forces with FareShare Yorkshire, a charity that redistributes surplus food products, Kellogg’s, and bakers Greggs, to supply food to breakfast clubs at schools and children’s centres in the area. The cereal, bread and other breakfast products provided by Greggs and FareShare Yorkshire are primarily for primary, secondary and children’s centres in the pilot area for use at their breakfast clubs, although the offer could be extended to families and the wider community where possible.
History arrives in Keighley
An author and Yorkshire historian will visit Keighley Library next month to talk about the county’s forgotten role in the socalled ‘Peasant’s Revolt’ of 1381. Juliet Barker will visit Keighley Library on Saturday 7th February at 2pm in an event open to people of all ages. Dr Barker specialises in the Middle Ages and literary biography and is the author of works on the Bronte’s, William Wordsworth and Medieval Tournaments. Between 1983 and 1989 she was a curator and librarian at the Bronte Parsonage Museum in Haworth. Tickets are available from Keighley Library free of charge but places are limited so booking is essential.

Remembering victims of honour-based violence
Memorial Day established to pay tribute to victims worldwide
TRIBUTE: Shafilea Ahmed was killed by her parents in 2003 when she was just 17-years-old after suffering years of abuse. Her birthday will mark the official memorial day for victims of honour-based violence
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
The birthday of a Bradford teenager, murdered after suffering years of honour-based violence, will be marked this year with the first ever memorial day which remembers victims of honour killings. Shafilea Ahmed was suffocated to death by her parents in 2003 when she was 17-years-old, after being abused for a long duration of her life and a failed forced marriage attempt. UK charity, Karma Nirvana, which supports honour crimes and forced marriages, worked with Cosmopolitan magazine, to arrange the day of remembrance to fall on Shafilea’s birthday – 14th July. An estimated 5,000 women internationally are killed each year for bringing ‘shame’ upon their families with at least 12 of these victims being British – Many believe the true number is thought to be far higher, as many simply ‘disappear’. Karma Nirvana and Cosmopolitan launched an online petition via Change.org in May 2014 urging everyone to pledge their support for an annual memorial day. Over 115,000 signatures were secured together with the support of the three main political parties. In July last year, as part of the

campaign, a poignant image was also beamed onto the Royal Opera House to coincide with David Cameron’s Girl Summit to raise awareness of the cruelty that is still happening in Britain today. Jasvinder Sanghera CBE, a survivor of forced marriage and founder and Chief Executive of Karma Nirvana, hopes the memorial day will encourage victims of honour-based violence to speak out. “Girls and women can be murdered for the most basic freedoms – the right to education, independence or wanting to choose their partner,” she said. “A day of memory will honour these women and dishonour the crime. It will also raise awareness so anyone can spot this abuse and
potentially save someone’s life.” The day was also highly commended by political leaders in the UK, with Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, voicing his support. “Cosmo and Karma Nirvana deserve huge credit for shining a light on this issue to help give people on the frontline, from teachers to healthcare workers, the confidence to speak out where they suspect abuse is happening and give these women a voice,” Mr Clegg said. “By remembering past victims, we can show them that they are
£3million in bus lane fines Leeds’ cameras continue prolific trend
Bus lanes are many driver’s worst enemy, with the ‘congestion easing’ initiatives usually costing more in fines for motorists on top of adding time to journeys. In Leeds, it seems the story is no different with motorists being fined a total of £3million over the last two years for venturing into the ‘no-go zones’. Averaging out at more than £4,000 a day, the council say they are
reinvesting the fines back into the roads yet many still want to see more done to improve driving conditions for the large outlay in fines. On Kirkstall Road for example, the bus lane camera just before Canal Road, has caught out motorists more than any other except one in the city, with more than 25,000 drivers venturing over the solid white lines. It also brought in almost £250,000 in
just ten months. Due to its close location to a left turn, many have argued that the camera is too prolific and is in fact causing more unnecessary congestion on one of the city’s busiest roads. A Leeds City Council spokeswoman provided the following statement: “We monitor the impact of bus lane enforcement to make sure the measures we have taken are
not alone, giving them vital support to regain control of their lives.” Theresa May, Home Secretary, added: “Forced marriage and honour-based violence are deplorable forms of abuse with victims’ lives destroyed by the very people they should be able to love and trust. “I commend Karma Nirvana and Cosmopolitan’s campaign to raise awareness of these often hidden crimes through a remembrance day for victims and thank them for their ongoing work to tackle forced marriage and honour based violence.” delivering the best possible outcomes for road users,” she said. “Evidence shows that in some locations offences have reduced by 80 per cent suggesting that the cameras are having an impact, making sure bus lanes aren’t congested with traffic that shouldn’t be there so that buses can run to time.” In total there are 39 bus lanes in Leeds, with 32 of them being enforced by fixed cameras. A fine of £30 is handed out to any persons who enter the lanes during specified hours, rising to £60 if it is not paid within 14 days. An appeals process is available with almost 3,000 tickets revoked over the last two years.

25 years of
mental health care
Giving sufferers ‘a voice’ that will be heard By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A mental health charity in Bradford celebrated its 25th anniversary last month, in which time thousands of people have benefitted from the crucial advocacy help. The Bradford and Airedale Mental Health Advocacy Group (BAMHAG) first opened its doors in 1989 when a group of support workers banded together to help empower patients with mental health illnesses. Since then, it has grown into one of the UK’s longest standing providers of user-led mental health advocacy work providing statutory and nonstatutory mental health advocacy within hospital and community settings. Helping to give people with such illnesses ‘a voice’, the advocates, many of whom
have suffered from mental health issues before, do not judge any patient and listen to all requests, big or small. Sharon Cullerton, director at BAMHAG, has been working for the charity for the past 15 years and said its longevity was down to a rise in understanding of mental health work. “To reach 25 years is a big achievement but there is still much more work to be done,” she said. “A greater parity is needed for mental health issues in relation to physical health because so many people are affected by the illness during their life. “Official statistics say that one in four people will experience a mental health problem, but I believe every person will at some point. It is a natural part of human being.” She added: “It is our job to
SUPPORT: BAMHAG director, Sharon Cullerton, and volunteer, Aminur Chowdhury, both say there is still a lot of work to be done to help educate different communities about the affect of mental health illnesses
support these people by giving them ‘a voice’ in their time of need and making sure that voice is heard.” In some South Asian communities, the topic of mental health is still considered somewhat of a taboo subject. Aminur Chowdhury is a volunteer at BAMHAG and says he has seen the effects of mental health issues with friends and close acquaintances. Reiterating Ms Cullerton’s sentiments, he added: “I think what we need to see in the very near future is a greater acceptance of mental health illnesses from all communities, especially the South Asian one. “There is still a stigma attached to the topic yet anybody can suffer from these issues and it is imperative that we as a community understand this and help in whatever way we can. “A mental health illness
does not only revolve around the idea of ‘jinns’ but can come from a number of sources, with the death of a close family member a very popular trigger. “The community has a responsibility to help others and by putting them in touch with wonderful charities such as BAMHAG, we can do just that.” Over the last 25 years, BAMHAG has flourished within the Health and Social Care system, receiving The Duke of York’s Community Initiative Award in 2005 as well as a national award from the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE) for positive practice in Mental Health. Today a team of 19 staff and individual advocates specialise in Community, Older People, Independent Mental Capacity and Independent Mental Health advocacy work across Bradford and Airedale.

Walking football strides forward
Footballers in Leeds are getting a kick out of some new soccer sessions with a difference, as walking football sessions prove a hit at Pudsey and Armley leisure centres. Designed to help men of all ages to get into the sport, including those who may have stopped playing through injury or those new to football, walking football is a version of the game that focuses on skill with the ball rather than pace. The rules are the same as indoor football, with the only difference being that players are not allowed to run and anyone who does concedes a free kick. Free taster sessions at Armley and Pudsey, with six or seven players a side, have proved a big hit, and now the council is hoping to establish a network of similar sessions at other centres across the city.

£10,000 reward for JUSTICE SICKENED: Sam Al-Kazhraji says he has not been able to sleep since the robbery last week
Feeding the homeless
Hundreds of vulnerable families and people are receiving a welcome boost from the council and one of its partners following a generous food donation. Liberty Gas, one of the council’s gas contractors, have kindly donated 100 food parcels. The council is now working with FareShare Yorkshire to distribute the food to homeless and vulnerable people across Leeds. Councillor Bill Urry, Leeds City Council’s lead member for homelessness said: “With the generosity of organisations like Liberty Gas, many charities and food banks are able to provide vital help to families and individuals when they need it most. “As well as the food itself, it’s really important that we offer people support and advice so they can get out of the cycle that poverty and homelessness puts them in.”
Smart Swaps for healthy habits
Recent data suggests that over 13 per cent of Leeds’ children who are in their last year at primary school are overweight. The new Change4Life campaign launched by Public Health England is getting an extra push in the city as families are encouraged to make easy swaps from unhealthy snacks to healthy ones. Leeds has been one of the top performing areas in recent Smart Swap campaigns, and the efforts being made by individuals and families around the city will pay dividends for years to come Councillor Lisa Mulherin, Chair of the Leeds Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “A healthy diet can make a big difference to a whole range of short and long term health issues. “From the impact of sugar on teeth, to excess sugar causing fat to build up inside the body, with potential consequences like heart disease, some cancers, or type 2 diabetes later in life, there’s a lot to be gained by watching what we eat and drink.”

MISSING: The Volvo D-9 engine was one of the most expensive models stolen and is distinguished by its bright white colour, measuring around one-and-a-half metres
‘Thugs stole my life’s work in one night’ Cover story continued Mr Al-Kazhraji, who owns West End Marine Ltd, said he could not believe it when he drove into the yard the following morning and saw the business had been robbed. “At around 8am we came up to the gates and you could see that they had been forced open,” he said. “I drove into the yard and then saw the roller shutter was open for the warehouse and a fork lift truck was in the yard which was very unusual. “It wasn’t until we inspected the building that we saw the extent of what had been taken. After that I felt sick all day. “All my staff have families and this is going to affect us all. If I lose my livelihood due to this burglary, the whole staff will lose there’s too. “I have worked my whole life to build this business up and these thugs came in one night and just took it all away.” As the business was still in the process of moving into the new site at the time of the burglary, the premises were still uninsured as a new alarm system had not yet been fitted. This has severely impacted the company’s operations and running costs, leading Mr Kazhraji to offer
REWARD: Many of the engines stolen were brightly coloured, like the one pictured
the substantial reward to anyone that can help find those responsible. “The £10,000 reward is very serious,” he said. “It is offered to anyone who can help trace the people responsible for the burglary and hopefully help return some of the stolen goods.” The father-of-three adds that he has not been able to sleep since the theft and believes that the robbery was a ‘targeted’ one. “It was definitely a planned operation with military precision,” he said. “They took all the most
expensive engines, propellers, starter motors and alternators. “The police agree that whoever did it had planned it for a long time beforehand. They even had an escape plan if they had been caught on the night, as the back lock had also been broken off.” The vehicle used in the robbery is believed to have been a 7.5tonne lorry with engines on the back. Mr Al-Kazhraji says it must have made more than one trip between the yard in Batley and wherever the engines were taken as the number of stolen goods weighed
too much for one trip. Due to this, it is believed the lorry will not have been able to travel more than a 30 minute distance from the site on that night, with the full incident taking place between 10pm and midnight. The most expensive model of engine taken was the Volvo D-9 (pictured above) which can be noticed by its white appearance, around one-and-a-half metres long, and was wrapped in polythene. Other designs include: Yamaha, Volvo, Caterpillar, Iveco and Perkins. Det Insp Stef Wiseman, of Kirklees CID, said: “We don’t believe this was a random burglary. The engines are worth a lot of money and we believe the establishment was targeted because of what was in the premises. “I would appeal to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area on that night to get in contact. I would also appeal to anyone with an interest in boats to be on the lookout too. “If you are offered a boat engine or engines for sale in a deal that sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.” If you have any information about the robbery please contact the CID on 101.

YUM: Pupils at Thornbury Primary School receive their toast and juice, prepared by a team of volunteers, every Friday morning
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A team of parents from a Bradford school have raised more than £1,400 by selling toast and juice to pupils every Friday during their weekly ‘Crust sessions’. Volunteers at Thornbury Primary School, have been taking part in the fundraising activity for almost a year now, with all money raised reinvested back into the school. On average, they make around £70 per week selling 280 slices of toast and about 220 cartons of juice to the children – something which on these cold winter mornings goes down a treat. The parents toast and butter bread, store it in microwave ovens on trolleys and, with the juice packs, wheel the tasty treats to the playground for the Key Stage 1 break at 9.45am and the Key Stage 2 break at 10.15am. The parents are all members of the Friends of Thornbury Primary School group and head teacher at the school, Clare Daddy, praised them for all their work.
She said: “The children love the Friday Crust. When they see the parents coming with the trolleys they shout ‘It’s the toast ladies’. “The Friends of Thornbury Primary are an asset to the school. They raise money through the

school, brought the initiative to Thornbury after seeing a similar project being run at Westbourne Primary School. “Since we’ve been doing this every Friday morning, the response from the children has been fantastic,” she said. “They all look forward to it and we feel like celebrities when wheeling in the trolleys because they love seeing us.” Nasreen added that because Friday’s are only half-days at Thornbury, the crust sessions are even more important for the pupils. “School finishes at 12.20 here on a Friday and some of the kids go straight off to an afterschool club which won’t finish until around half past one,” she continued. “For this reason, the toast is very important because it might be the only thing they eat between breakfast and going home.” Other works that the Friends of Thornbury group held previously include a Ladies Night fundraiser and the sale of arts and crafts kits to parents and pupils.

DEFECTED Britain’s anti-EU UKIP party was dealt a blow last weekend in lead up to this year’s elections, as a senior MEP, and one of the party’s leading ethnic minority members, defected to the Conservative party. Describing the party as ‘amateur’ and ‘lacking policies’, Amjad Bashir announced his decision to join David Cameron’s Tories, moments after being suspended for ‘extremely serious’ offences. Mr Bashir, who won his seat as an MEP for Yorkshire and Humber in May 2014, says the allegations against him during his exit were just an attempt to ‘spoil’ his reputation. “On Friday I met David Cameron a n d applied to join the CHANGE: Amjad Bashir had become UKIP’s MEP for Yorkshire and Humber in May last year yet has now defected to the Tories, labelling his former party ‘amateur’

Conservative Party,” he told the Telegraph newspaper. “It is clear UKIP's action today is a desperate attempt to spoil this and is without any foundation. “The issues raised in my notice of suspension are historic and well known to the party. Indeed, on one of them, Nigel Farage has publicly defended me over it.” In response, Mr Farage hit back at the comments during an appearance on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show. He said: “Whichever way we look at this, he had reached the end of the road with us, he knew that. “My only surprise, and my genuine surprise, is that the Conservative Party have accepted him - Caveat emptor (Latin for ‘buyer beware’).” A UKIP spokesman added: “The allegations against Mr Bashir are of a grave nature and we will be forwarding our evidence obtained so far to the police. “UKIP will not tolerate anyone abusing their positions in the party, as
we have a firm commitment to differing ourselves from the existing political classes. “As a result, Mr Bashir’s involvement with the party was suspended today with immediate effect pending further investigations.” Such allegations against the now Conservative member, include ‘unanswered financial and employment questions’ as well as ‘interfering’ with candidate selection processes. Since 2006, UKIP has experienced rapid growth, winning Britain's European elections in May before poaching two of Cameron's Conservative lawmakers, making it a real threat in May's national election to all the leading parties. With such rapid growth however it has struggled to maintain discipline and lost several candidates in recent months including one who was recorded making insulting remarks about homosexuals and Chinese people.

How do I look?
An exciting exhibition showcasing the changing fashions in hair, make-up and manicure that have risen to prominence over the decades and centuries is set to open its doors at a Leeds museum later this week. Not to be missed for anyone with an eye and passion for fashion, the ‘How do I Look?’ exhibition at Abbey House Museum will be open from 24th January until the 31st December 2015. An array of diverse and fascinating objects from Leeds Museums and Galleries vast collections will feature in the exhibition including: Ancient Egyptian kohl pots,1960s false eyelashes, Victorian corsets, curling tongs, 1950s perm machines and cutthroat razors. Get screened, be safe
Women over the age of 25 are being encouraged to go for their cervical screenings across the county as part of Cervical Cancer Prevention Week – 25th to 31st January 2015. Over 40 per cent of women aged 25 to 49 in the city of Bradford, and around a quarter of women elsewhere in the district, haven’t had a cervical screening within the last three and a half years. Around 20 per cent of women in the district aged 50 and over haven’t had a cervical screening in the last five and a half years and a Cancer Research UK study stated women in this age group who failed to attend were six times more likely to end up with cervical cancer. Although the cancer rate has fallen significantly since improvements in the national NHS screening programme in the late 1980s, incidence rates for some age groups have risen in recent years.
Calderdale Market changes
Markets in Calderdale could soon be set for a boost, as Calderdale Council’s Cabinet considers the creation of a group specifically looking at developing markets across the borough. At the meeting of Cabinet on Monday 2nd February, members will discuss re-establishing the Cabinet Markets Working Party, which will look at issues relating to the operation and development of local markets. The group would have representatives from each of the three main political parties, and will also include the Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and the Council’s representative on the National Association of British Market Authorities. Calderdale markets are evolving all the time, and provide a unique shopping experience, but to really make the most of the historic spaces, ideas and funding opportunities need to be found.

A team of budding entrepreneurs will be setting up their own online channel next month, aiming to inspire young people across the country. OurFuture TV is an online platform set to be launched by six Grange Technology College students, which will tell the stories of motivational young people across Yorkshire as well as more renowned celebrities. As well as real-life success stories, help with things such as personal statements and interviews will also be uploaded to the YouTube channel upon its launch. Meanwhile, interviews with university representatives will give prospective future students a chance to hear what these places of education look for during the admissions process. Superhighway development ‘moves up a gear’ Cycle route set to start development this week
Reserve Recruitment in Leeds Parachutists and military equipment was seen in Leeds city centre last week, as a new recruitment drive was launched by the Army Reserve. Aiming to showcase to potential reservists, aged 18 - 50, how a role in the Army Reserve can help fill the gaps missing in people’s civilian careers, similar events were also seen in cities across the country. New research, conducted via a One Poll survey, revealed that more than one in five people from Leeds, Yorkshire and the Humber feel challenge and excitement is missing from their day job and six in ten would consider volunteering or a
part-time job with the Army on top of their normal work. Also revealed in the survey was the top three things people were missing from their day jobs: excitement and challenge, travel opportunities and professional development. Almost one in four said they would consider joining the Army Reserve to benefit from these opportunities, with roles starting from just 19 days a year. The latest Reserve campaign, hitting TV screens nationwide, shows reservists taking part in a range of activities from live firing exercises in Challenger tanks to underwater welding, and from lagoon diving to delivering emergency medical supplies and humanitarian aid.

TEAM: Members of Yorkshire’s 4th battalion were on hand to talk about the Army Reserve in Leeds’ Railway Station
The £30million Leeds to Bradford cycle superhighway took a large step forward this week as work began on the construction of the route in Armley. Expected to be completed by September 2015, the route will cover a 14-mile distance between Bradford City centre and Seacroft, in East Leeds. The route, which took six months to plan, will also incorporate 20mph zones for vehicles. The development began as a way of promoting cycling in the two cities with £11m in funding provided locally, and a further £18m from the Department for Transport. It is jointly managed by West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Leeds City Council and Bradford Council. Councillor Richard Lewis, Leeds City
Council’s executive board member for transport and the economy, said: “Hot on the heels of hosting a hugely successful Grand Départ in Leeds, this new segregated cycle route will help ensure a lasting legacy for many years to come. “With the creation of this route, we hope to see a greater number of people taking up cycling for shorter and leisure journeys, as well as for commuting. “This scheme is about inspiring more people to cycle who may not usually do so; it is not for a small, specialist group of people alone. It is cycling as a whole and cycling for everyone that we want to encourage and we believe this scheme is doing just that.” Once complete, it is hoped that more daily commuters between the cities will take up the option of cycling the

Efforts to prevent a Kirklees library from closing down have been given a huge boost this past week as public support has seen more than 10,000 signatures gathered in favour of keeping the service. The Batley Library had been singled out as one of many which may have to be shut down after budget cuts would see funding for the upkeep of the buildings fall from £6million to either £3.2m or £2.5m. Due to the millions that need slashing from the annual budget, 24 of 26 libraries across the region were at risk, including all four in Batley and Spen. However, during a District Committee meeting last week, the petition was handed over to the powers that be, showing strong opposition about any closure of Batley’s historic building. 15-year-old Haris Rashid, from Staincliffe, was one of the first people to sign the petition and brought in support from local councillors and MPs. He said: “The library is a really important and valuable resource for Batley and for people of all ages and
walks of life. “It simply cannot close and we must fight to protect it. That's why we contacted Jo (Cox) for her support to help campaign to keep it open.” Ms Cox, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Batley and Spen, added: “The idea of shutting libraries appals people,” she said. “This is especially so in Batley and Spen where we have such fine, well run services in wonderful buildings. “Our libraries are among the ‘Wonders of Kirklees’ – from the gorgeous, historic building at Batley to the spectacular art deco library in Cleckheaton. “If these buildings close they will be lost forever, we will never get them back. They will be quickly sold off and converted into something else. No one wants to see this and we can’t allow it to happen.” During last week’s committee meeting, chief librarian, Carol Stump, said one idea to retain the service could be to set up a ‘friends of’ group and utilise a part-voluntary workforce.

‘£12,000 or another year in jail’ CHOICES: Sajid Ali can either pay the £12,000 now and not face an extended sentence, or add a year to his jail term and pay upon his release
A Bradford drug dealer has been ordered to re-pay thousands of pounds or face another year in prison after being jailed 16 months ago. Sajid Ali, 27, who was jailed for 55 months in September 2013 for drugs offences, was served with the confiscation order at Bradford Crown Court last week. His Honour Judge Rose ruled that Ali, of Parkside Road in West Bowling, had £12,109.09 in available assets and ordered him to pay within 30 days. Ali was arrested in February 2012 following a search warrant executed at his home address.
During the search officers seized cocaine with a street value of more than £30,000 and a large amount of cash. Ali was subsequently charged and later convicted of drugs offences, together with a charge of possessing criminal property. Gary Walton, Financial Investigator from the Bradford Proceeds of Crime Act Team, said: “We welcome this confiscation order, which is yet another reminder to criminals that crime does not pay in West Yorkshire. “If Ali fails to pay, his sentence will be extended by 12 months and the outstanding amount will still
be owed when he has completed it.” Mark Burns-Williamson, the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire, said: “Cases like these highlight the considerable amount of money we can potentially recover from criminal enterprises and which could be used to the benefit of local people and police. “I am campaigning for all the money seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act to be returned to our communities, as half currently goes back to Government and cases like this are a timely reminder of the amounts involved.”
Father who left injured children in wreckage of car crash jailed
SENTENCED: Umbar Ali will spend four years and nine months behind bars for offences surrounding the car crash
A Bradford man who crashed his car by driving dangerously and then ran off leaving members of his own family seriously injured has today been sent to jail. Umbar Ali, 40, of Acre Lane, Eccleshill, had to be traced by police after fleeing the scene of an accident on 22nd March last year, where his Vauxhall Zafira collided with an Alfa Romeo in Queens Road, Shipley. At Bradford Crown Court today, Ali was
sentenced to four years and nine months after he was found guilty of dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and having no insurance. Ali left his wife in the vehicle, along with three of his children - one of whom was just 13 months old. The occupants of the Alfa Romeo, a husband and wife, also required hospital treatment for serious injuries. Speaking after Ali had been sentenced, Sergeant Rick Lyon of the Western
Area Roads Policing Unit, said: “Ali not only caused the crash with his dangerous driving, he then fled the scene leaving a number of people with serious injuries - which included members of his own family. “His heartless actions have today been rewarded with a prison sentence, which demonstrates that leaving the scene of a road accident is a serious offence and one that will be dealt with robustly by police and the courts.”

TEAM: Youth from Kumon Y’all and the Institute of Islamic Education came together to help tidy the Walker Street Complex on Saturday
Youth lead the way in community cohesion project
Community clean up Young people from across Dewsbury had their brushes and brooms at the ready last weekend as they helped tidy a local residential home. Members of the Institute of Islamic Education, at the town’s Markaji Masjid, and youth from community group, Kumon Y’all, joined forces for a day of cleaning at the Walker Street Complex on Saturday 17th January. Despite rain and freezing conditions, the 12 volunteers, and their group leaders, gave up their own time to complete the work. For more than a year, members of the Kumon Y’all group have been working with the complex as a way of building up community and interfaith relations. Farook Yunus, project leader for the team, explained further how the relationship first began. “It was more than a year ago now when I was told that residents at this residential home had misconceived ideas on Islam and therefore viewed it in a negative light,” he said. “So what I decided to do was go to the home, with about a
dozen kids from Kumon Y’all and attempt to change these ideas by talking to them. “After a somewhat hostile reception, we were soon just talking and laughing with the residents and have continued to work with them over the past 12 months.”

“After a somewhat hostile reception, we were soon just talking and laughing with the residents and have continued to work with them over the past 12 months.” As well as last week’s clean-up operation, the group have also been involved in gardening projects, cooking classes and pampering sessions for the residents. “Now when I go in, I am always warmly greeted and I even get a big hug from some residents which is fantastic,” Farook said. “We started working with Walker Street a while back and as far I am concerned, we are a family. “The values family members have towards each other is to help, play and have fun together. That is all we are doing. And now
success, Farook says it will not be the last. Molana Mahmood Sacha, a teacher from the institute, added: “On behalf of the Institute of Islamic Education, I would like to take this opportunity to humbly thank the organisers for allowing us the opportunity to take part in this project. “It was an absolute pleasure to be amongst a united community, helping and supporting one another. “The smiling faces on the elderly people is something I cherish and made it all the more worthwhile.”

Muslim leaders object to Pickles letter Claims that MP views ‘Muslims solely to be blamed for terrorist activities’
DISAPPOINTED: Mohammed Rafiq Sehgal said Eric Pickles’ (below) letter seemed to blame and target the Muslim community
Bradford’s Council for Mosques has said the Muslim community deserves an ‘apology’ from Britain’s community’s secretary, after a letter deemed to imply ‘Muslims are not part of British society’ was sent to Islamic leaders. Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, sent out 1,000 letters asking the leaders to ‘explain and demonstrate how faith in Islam can be part of British identity’. It was signed by Mr Pickles and community minister, Lord Ahmad, and sent out after the Paris attacks earlier this month. In response to the message, Bradford’s President for the Council for Mosques, Mohammed Rafiq Sehgal, said it seems Pickles believes Muslims are ‘solely to be blamed’ for terrorist acts. “Eric Pickles’ letter to the Islamic leadership is highly objectionable on several grounds,” a statement from Mr Sehgal read. “Inadvertently, it blames and targets the Muslim community. “The statement incorrectly implies that Muslims are not part of the British society and are at unease with it, hence, they need to do more to be inclusive. “We ask why the letter has only been sent to the Muslim leaders and not more widely to the leadership of other faiths and non faith communities. This clearly suggests that in Mr Pickle’s views Muslims are solely to be blamed for terrorists’ activities. “This is typical of the thinking amongst the Government ministers and the security agencies.” In the letter, Mr Pickles did say he was proud of the way the British Muslim community had responded to the Paris attacks earlier this month, yet added there was more work to be done in rooting out extremist behaviour. Mr Sehgal said the comments seemed to relate with many ‘right wing’ sentiments and ‘picked on’ Muslims. The statement continues: “Mr Eric Pickles and his partner in crime Lord Ahmad are guilty of overlooking the fact that for British Muslims Britain is their home and take the safety of their ‘home’ very seriously. “Therefore, for senior politicians to continuously pick on Muslims and blame them for the activities of terrorists who do not care for the faith of their victims, is unjustified and grossly out of context. “We ask Mr Pickles to publically apologise to the Muslim community for bringing this peaceful section of the British society into disrepute. Blaming Muslims may win Mr Pickles and his party some support from the right wing voters but it does not help good community relations.” Despite criticism from several faith leaders, Prime Minister David Cameron publically backed the letter. “Anyone who reads this letter - and I've read the letter - will see that what he is saying is that British Muslims make a great contribution to our country, that what is happening in terms of extremist terror has nothing to do with the true religion of Islam,” he said. “It's being perverted by a minority who have been radicalised. Anyone reading this letter, who has a problem with it, I think really has a problem.” To read Mr Pickles’ letter in its entirety please see picture attached.

25,000 new businesses supported by Start Up Loans The Government’s Start Up Loan scheme has hit another milestone as the 25,000th business loan is approved, taking the total amount lent to new firms to nearly £130 million. The scheme provides financial support and mentoring to entrepreneurs looking to set up their own business. According to the Start Up Loan Company, more than 32,000 new jobs have been generated as a result of the scheme since it was launched in 2012. Nicola Weeks from Bedford has been awarded the 25,000th loan and is the latest female entrepreneur to start a business through the Government’s successful Start Up Loans scheme. Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy and supporting them to get off the ground and create jobs and opportunities for hardworking people is a key part of our longterm economic plan. “That’s what our Start Up Loans are all about – it’s great news that 25,000 loans have now been issued, giving people who want to work hard and get on the tools and confidence to turn their entrepreneurial vision into a reality.” Business Secretary Vince Cable said:
“The Start Up Loans scheme is enabling thousands of entrepreneurs across the country to realise their ambition and set up their own business. “Helping businesses to access the funds they need to grow is key to our recovery and through schemes like Start Up Loans the Government is supporting serious volumes of lending to small and medium sized businesses.” James Caan CBE, chairman of the Start Up Loans Company, said: “The creation of 25,000 new businesses is a significant achievement and everyone involved – the Government, the Start Up Loans Company, and the loan recipients themselves, should be immensely proud.” After a career in acting, Nicola applied for a loan of £8,500 to finance her wedding business, George James Bridal. Nicola Weeks, the 25,000th loan recipient of the Start Up Loans scheme, said: ”I received my Start Up Loan through Foundation East and found the process very efficient and straightforward. The help I received from my mentor was absolutely brilliant.
I’m so delighted to achieve my dream of running my own boutique and I’m honoured to be the 25,000th new business started by the scheme.” BUSINESS: James Caan CBE is the chairman of the government's Start Up Loans Company

Hand-in-Hand with Peshawar Touching tribute to be flown out on behalf of Bradford
Pupils across Bradford have been ‘on hand’ to show their support for children in Peshawar this month as they helped create a giant piece of art in the city. Whilst finger painting at school may be considered a simple art lesson, the message behind Atlas Primary School’s pupils’ handprints is much more powerful. Last month, 145 people, including 133 pupils aged between eight and 18, lost their lives after a Taliban attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar, Pakistan. Images following the attack were broadcast around the world with vigils held in the UK and other countries for the innocent victims. The Bradford Community Solidarity Scroll, spearheaded by Arshad Ali, is a concept which has involved pupils across the city printing their hands as a sign of ‘support’ for those affected by the attack. On Wednesday 14th January, the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Mike Gibbons, and the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Elizabeth Sharp, visited Atlas Primary School, to see the progress of the giant piece of material. As well as being treated to some songs from the school’s choir, letters, which will be posted to Pakistan in the near future, and which were written by the school’s pupils, were

also read out. Caroline Carr, headteacher at Atlas Primary School, said: “As a school we were all moved by the news of the shooting when it occurred. “The thought of going to school in the morning and not coming back is something very hard to comprehend and is something that has affected
parents and children at that school. “When Mr Ali spoke to us about this project, we were of course more than happy to support it, and send our condolences, thoughts and prayers to the people of Peshawar.” To conclude the Lord Mayor’s visit, Cllr Gibbons added his own handprint to the scroll and praised the initiative, and the children for supporting it. Mr Ali also explained how the
whole concept was initially conjured up from his daughter’s simple request. “It all began when my daughter, Yisbah, who actually used to be a pupil here at Atlas Primary School, asked me if she could send a card to the Peshawar school after hearing of what had happened,” he said. “From there, the project just kept getting bigger and bigger because more and more people wanted to
put their name to it. “We finally decided to create the scroll to give the children and Bradford’s leaders a chance to pass on their respects. We are now hoping to send it over to the school.” Later this year, two dignitaries from Bradford are hoping to travel to Pakistan to deliver the scroll to the Army Public School, along with letters written by local school children.

The entrepreneurial spirit and talents of young people from all over West Yorkshire were on show at the White Rose Shopping Centre last weekend. On Sunday 11th January, the Young Enterprise Trade Fair returned for its eleventh consecutive year, bringing young entrepreneurs to the centre, pitching their wares alongside the high street stores. The fair aims to give young people an opportunity to get a feel for what it is like to be in business and to develop the skills they will need in the world of work and industry. As well as producing or sourcing their product or service, the students had also developed business and marketing plans as part of the project, which was to set up and run their own company for a year. Nikki Appleton, marketing manager at White Rose Shopping Centre, said: “We were really pleased to be able to support the Social Enterprise scheme for the eleventh successive year in the centre.
“We have some really talented young people across Yorkshire and we’re proud to have been able to offer them a platform where they could try out their business ideas.” Jane Walton, Chairman of West Yorkshire Young Enterprise Board, which organises the event, also added her commendations for the teams involved. “The Trade Fair has provided these companies with a real taste of trading with the public in this wonderful commercial retail
professionalism and innovative products.” Fledgling companies who took part in the Trade Fair included groups from Dixons Allerton Academy in Bradford, Crossley Heath Grammar School in Halifax, Colne Valley High School in Huddersfield, Sowerby Bridge High School and North Halifax Grammar School, selling a wide range of products including personalised mugs, soap hampers, photo frames, sweets and personalised hats.

Siblings release charity single Three musical siblings from Bradford have taken their fundraising to a whole new note this week after releasing their own song in aid of those affected by a Taliban attack on a Pakistan school last month. 16-year-old Shakeeb Hussain, and his sisters, Ayesha, 19, and Areeba, 15, all from Undercliffe, pulled together their own money to record and release a track in aid of the Peshawar School shooting victims. On 16th December 2014, nine members of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan opened fire inside the Army Public School, killing 132 schoolchildren and 13 members of staff. Vigils were held across the world in the days and weeks that followed with touching candlelight tributes seen locally in Bradford and Leeds. Now, after deciding to do something ‘different’, the Hussain siblings released their song, a cover of John Legend’s ‘All of Me’, in hope of raising money for those affected. University of Huddersfield student, Ayesha, explained where the idea for the song came from at their official launch at Carlton Bolling College. “When the attack happened on the school it was all over the news and I think everybody was watching it in disbelief,” she said. “It made us think that this could have been us, and what can we do to help. That is when we decided upon recording a song. “We wanted to do something to show how much we care and decided that we should record this single and donate the proceeds to help our brothers and sisters affected by this tragedy.” After gathering their own money
together, the three singers took to the recording studio and after some help from their father, launched it as a purchasable download from a number of music outlets. “We don’t want people to download this track once, but five or ten times as it is only 99p so the more times it is purchased, the more money goes to those who need it. “We need to let these children and parents know that they are not alone and people are still thinking of them all around the world.” Mr Adrian Kneeshaw, head teacher at Carlton Bolling College, said his school holds a sense of affinity and unity with Peshawar Army Public School, due to many students coming from Pakistan, including some from the Peshawar area. Praising the efforts of the two current students, and one former pupil, he said: “This is a typical response from Carlton Bolling students who, time after time, show their caring nature and spring into action to help others. “The situation in Peshawar shocked us all and I am very proud of Ayesha, Shakeeb and Areeba for leading the way by releasing this single to help the families affected.” ‘All of Me’ by Ayesha, Shakeeb and Areeba is available to download on iTunes, Google Play as well as many other music outlets with all proceeds going to children and families of the Peshawar School Massacre. The funds are to be used to provide medical care, rehabilitation and long term care for the surviving students as well as helping grieving relatives by providing counselling services.

ROBBERY: The five men were captured on CCTV at the home
Terrifying armed gang robbery Gun and knife wielding thieves leave family ‘numb with fear’ A Leeds family say they were ‘scared for their lives’ last week after a gang of armed robbers burst into their family home, threatening to cut off a relative’s hand with a machete if they didn’t receive ‘gold and cash’. 56-year-old Mohammed Farooq was at home with his two daughters at their home in Beeston, on Monday 12th January, when five masked men entered the house. “It was around 7pm that everything happened and the whole incident was over in 10 minutes,” Mr Farooq explained. “We had left the back door unlocked in anticipation of my son
TARGETED: The house in Beeston was targeted by the gang of robbers when Mr Farooq was at home with his two daughters
ESCAPED: The thieves ran up the alleyway at the top of the road as they made off with gold jewellery and cash
returning home shortly, but I was then confronted by these men with balaclavas in my own living room. “I couldn’t believe it. It was so shocking to be in that position and I was just telling them, we don’t have anything of value here, we are not a rich family.” As the men walked through the house, one gunman pointed a sawnoff shotgun at Mr Farooq’s head whilst three others stormed upstairs to search the rooms. 23-year-old Salma Farooq had been upstairs with her sister, Saarah, 12, at the time and said it was an ordeal which left her numb with fear.
“They were just saying to me and my sister, ‘Where is the gold? Where is the money?’,” she explained. “We didn’t know but they continued to demand that we tell them. One of them then pushed my face into the bed and held a knife to the back of my neck to threaten me whilst another asked my sister where the gold and money was.” The girls were then dragged downstairs when Salma was again threatened with a weapon, with one man holding a meat cleaver above her hand. “He threatened to cut my hand off if my dad didn’t tell them what they wanted,” she added.“It was like something out of a movie. They had these big guns and weapons.” The robbers finally fled the scene after Mr Farooq’s 19-year-old son returned home from work and ran out of the home to call for help. Mr Farooq added: “I just told him, ‘run, run, run’, and he left through the door and ran back up the street. The men all followed a moment later but turned right instead down the ginell at the end of our street.” After 20 minutes police arrived at the scene but the men had all disappeared. They are believed to have been driving a stolen black Mitsubishi Shogun or L200. Mr Farooq’s wife, Robina Mushtaq, had been at work during the incident and said despite her gold jewellery being taken from the home, it was the ordeal her family had been put through that mattered most. She said: “The worst thing for me isn’t the fact I have had my possessions taken, it is knowing that my daughter’s have been put through this terrifying ordeal. “I had left for work at the time of the incident so I wasn’t here for them. To have only heard the story through what they have said to the police is just so scary.” The robbery has also been linked to two separate burglaries which happened in Bradford earlier in the day. Two men, aged 24 and 28, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and bailed pending further investigations.

Grand Mosque’s Grand Mawlid Thousands of people braved the snowy conditions in Bradford last weekend to attend a memorable procession which celebrated one of the most important dates in the Islamic year. The annual ‘Eid-Milad-un-Nabi’ is the festival of the birth of Prophet Muhammad, with Muslims across the country commemorating the occasion with a colourful display. At Bradford’s Al-Jamia SuffaTul-Islam Grand Mosque, the local community gathered alongside members of Islamic organisations from across the country to parade through the city’s streets. Participants recited poems of praise, waved colourful flags and displayed banners with messages of love and peace for all humanity as the procession set off from Europe’s largest mosque and peacefully passed through the streets of Bradford returning to the Grand Mosque. The procession was presided by the founder of the host organisation, the internationally renowned Muslim Scholar, Shaykh Mohammad Habib-ur-Rehman Mahboobi but also welcomed dozens of senior scholars from around the world. Speaking after the procession, event chief organiser Mohammed Riaz said: “I would like to thank everyone who took part in this beautiful event on behalf of AlJamia Suffa-Tul-Islam including all

Teacher turns author after release of unique autobiography AUTHOR: Sahera Patel hopes her story will not only make people laugh but also help dispel some common myths surround her religion

When Sahera Patel began jotting down some of her life stories five years ago, the then-teacher was just rekindling an old passion of hers having completed an English degree at university in her youth. Fast forward to the present day and not only has the 40-year-old Dewsbury resident completed her scripture but now is the proud author of a fully published autobiography. ‘I’m not a celebrity, I’m a Muslim: one woman’s journey to a world of faith’ is a light-hearted read which talks about some of Sahera’s favourite memories from growing up on terrace streets to humorous stories from her early visits to mosques and even her own arranged marriage. “I think many people will be able to relate to stories in the book and hope it can make them laugh because it is relatable in so many ways,” she said. “A lot of people share similar experiences to mine when they were growing up such as having to juggle religious life with a nine-tofive job.” The memoir has also been written in hope of educating the wider society, whether it is people of Islamic faith or not, about some of the mistaken beliefs surrounding the religion. Sahera continued: “There are a lot of
misconceptions in our society about Islam and what it teaches so I decided to try and tackle some of these issues in the book with tales of my own experiences,” she said. “Once I decided to look at it from a religious angle it began to give the book a real purpose and it really started taking off. “Many people forget the difference between cultural and religious traditions and I have tried to dispel some of the myths which surround Islam for example when it comes to forced marriages.” The book was finally published for the first time last year after months of attempting to secure a publishing deal. Sahera says she approached up to 50 publishers with her book, and despite many compliments, she was told it was not marketable, with one publisher quoted as saying ‘to have an autobiography published you have to be a murderer or a celebrity’. Taking inspiration from this, the first time author says she decided to entitle her life story ‘I’m not a Celebrity, I’m a Muslim...’ and finally landed a joint-contract publishing deal. ‘I’m not a Celebrity, I’m a Muslim’ is available to be purchased now from Amazon and is hoped to be in book stores soon.

All’s well that ends well A L failure by a Solicitor to act on the instructions of their client can produce some unintended consequences, as the case of Wellesley Partners LLP –v- Withers LLP shows. In 2008, Withers acted for Wellesley in relation to the admission of a number of new partners to its LLP, including Addax, a Bahraini bank, which was investing £2.5 million in return for a 25% interest in the partnership. The agreement was that Addax should have an option to withdraw half its capital contribution. The LLP Agreement drafted by Withers stated that this could occur at any time during the first 41 months. However, Wellesley maintained that their instructions to Withers had been that the option should only be exercisable after 42 months, as had been reflected in an earlier draft of the Agreement. The option was exercised by Addax after only 12 months, causing significant financial difficulties for Wellesley. Wellesley brought a claim in professional negligence against Withers. Withers contended that the amendment to the Agreement had been made upon the instructions of Wellesley’s principal owner. The Solicitor maintained that whilst he had no recollection or written record of the conversation during which it was claimed the instructions were given, nevertheless he would not have changed the draft Agreement without being instructed to do so. The High Court took the view that the clause had been discussed but that Wellesley did not intend for the change to be made and did not understand that it had in fact been made. The Court found that the Solicitor “must have either misunderstood the instruction, or
noted it down wrong, or when he came to redraft misremembered what he had been instructed”. Accordingly, Withers had been negligent in altering the clause without instruction to do so. Other grounds of alleged negligence were not upheld by the Court. Wellesley sought damages for the profits it would have made if it had opened a new office in the USA to deal with the recruitment needs of Nomura (which had acquired the investment banking business of Lehmann following their collapse); and profits it would have made through expansion by recruiting more Consultants in its London office. In respect of the Nomura profits, the loss of opportunity to gain this benefit was contingent on a third party and as such the Claimant required to prove that there was a “real and substantial” chance of that third party acting in a particular way. Wellesley were able to establish a 60% chance and were awarded damages of c.£1 million. Withers had been aware of the intention to expand into the USA and so the loss was not too remote to be recoverable. In respect of the expansion profits, the loss of opportunity was to be proved on the balance of probabilities. Damages were awarded for loss of profits in London and diversion of the principal owner’s time. Whilst the total award of damages amounted to £1.6 million, this represented only 1/5 of the amount claimed, leading Withers to comment that Wellesley may have been better advised to settle their claim rather than proceed to trial. We at Blacks have a specialist team dealing with professional negligence claims against Solicitors and other professionals.

which is free for your guests to use when they are attending your wedding was a big deciding factor and this is the first thing we noticed on arrival when coming to visit for the first time before we booked our wedding. “We then met with Shazia, Events Co-ordinator at Carlisle Business Centre who helped point us in the right direction and she explained that the centre itself has many services that it can offer. “We were pleasantly surprised by this; car hire, invitations, make-up, beauty treatments, lighting, catering and many more. This made our lives much easier knowing that we had a list of trusty suppliers, on-hand. “When we were shown the function room prior to booking, we noticed the Prolegis Suite had fantastic lighting and high ceilings which made an ideal setting for our wedding breakfast. Shazia also explained that there were partitions in the room so we could split this in half, whilst AV and speakers would be available for us to use at the centre. “On the actual wedding day itself Muffassar looked after us by helping our guests on arrival and during the time we spent at the centre. “Shazia explained that the centre was popular for Nikah’s, Mendhi’s, Baraat and weddings which we hadn’t realised but we can certainly recommend them and we also knew that Carlisle Business Centre is about helping the local community of Manningham.”

UK stars call on PM to help Syrian refugees Celebrities from Sting to Emma Thompson and Michael Palin have written an open letter to the Prime Minister criticising his take
A star-studded list of UK celebrities from Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, to musician Sting and television presenter/actor Michael Palin wrote to Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday 26th January, criticising the government for not welcoming more Syrian refugees. A year ago, Britain announced it would accept several hundred of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees as part of a special resettlement programme. But the latest figures show only 90 have arrived so far, according to the Refugee Council, one of the leading charities in Britain working directly with refugees. "In a climate where children are sent to work in order to help their parents survive, where young girls are sold off as child brides and where torture victims are unable to rebuild their lives, every resettlement place (that) countries like Britain provide is a lifeline," the celebrities said in an open letter. "Resettling 'several hundred people' just isn't good enough for a global leader. This issue isn't about migration statistics or party politics, it's about people. It's about the values that we in Britain hold dear; compassion and humanity." Other celebrities who lent their support were actresses Vanessa Redgrave, Juliet Stevenson and Michelle Dockery, artist Grayson Perry, and film directors Ken Loach and Stephen Frears. Television presenters Dan Snow and fashion designers Vivienne Westwood and Bella Freud also signed the letter. The exodus from Syria's nearly four-year conflict is one of the largest forced migrations of people since World War Two. At least 3.7 million Syrians from a population of about 23 million are registered as refugees, mainly in neighbouring states, which are straining to provide accommodation, food, water and sanitation to the new arrivals. In Lebanon, home to 1.16 million Syrian refugees, one in four residents is a refugee. Turkey hosts a further 1.62 million Syrian refugees, Jordan 622,000 and Iraq 235,600, according to the latest figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The UNHCR, which wants to resettle 130,000 Syrians outside the region by the end of 2016, has repeatedly urged rich nations to show solidarity with Syria's neighbours and take more refugees. Since 2013, Germany has pledged to take in 30,000 Syrians, Australia 5,600, Sweden 1,200 and Norway 1,000. The Refugee Council's Chief Executive Maurice Wren said Britain's funding to the relief effort was not enough, in a bid to escalate the issue in political debate ahead of a general election in Britain in May. "The question is does David Cameron want to go down in history as the prime minister who rationed his compassion to a few hundred people when there was the opportunity to offer safety to so many more?" he said in a statement. Mark Goldring, the chief executive of Oxfam, has also lobbied for more refugees to be resettled in Britain. "We can no longer continue to treat this problem solely at arms length. For some refugees, life in camps or makeshift shelters is not just hard, it is impossible," he said. The statements come as Syrian refugees endure a particularly severe winter in the Middle East.

DISREPUTE: Amardip Bhopari groomed a 16-year-old boy with learning difficulties whilst working as a teacher, her famous father, Punjabi singer Malkit Singh, has faced a barrage of abuse since Amardip’s case went public
Name maligned The 28-year-old daughter of noted UK-based Punjabi singer Malkit Singh MBE has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for having sexual relations with her pupil, a minor with learning difficulties. Malkit Singh MBE, who’s successes include ‘Gurh Nalo Ishq Mitha’ and ‘Tootak Tootak Thootian (Hey Jamaolo)’, has since faced a barrage of vicious abuse via social media since his daughter’s case went public. Amardip Bhopari, of Foley Road East in Birmingham, began teaching at the academy school which catered for pupils with learning difficulties in 2012. The teacher showered gifts on the 16-year-old boy and also plied him with drink while she groomed him. The first physical contact with the 16-year-old boy, who suffers from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and dyslexia, began in February 2013.
MALIGNED: Malkit Singh MBE has faced a barrage of abuse on social media since his daughter’s sexual relations with a minor came to the fore
Bhopari had sent a text to the boy and arranged to meet him in the art room, where she performed a sexual act on him. She further went on to having sexual encounters with him in an industrial estate near the school, in her car and at her home. Bhopari also took the victim to a Formula 1 hotel on his birthday where they stayed all day and where the defendant gave him vodka. Matters came to light in
December 2013 and Bhopari was arrested. John Smitheman, defending, said Bhopari, who had left the academy as a result of the matters being discovered, was full of remorse. She had got a job at the school without any teaching qualifications where it appeared she was a great success. Bhopari, who admitted three charges of sexual activity with a child on 16th January, was ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years. Judge James Burbidge QC said: “I do not suggest you sought him out as vulnerable. “However as a teacher you owed him a duty of care that all teachers must owe to a child. “You had sex with him in public places, on an industrial estate and hotels and you also provided him with experiences that, as a 16year-old, meant that he would be attached to you.”

Supercar lands policeman leading double life in hot water
BAD COP: 37-year-old Osman Iqbal was found out after turning up to work in a Ferrari 458, he was at the centre of an organised crime group which ran brothels in exclusive areas of London
www.asianexpress.co.uk A 37-year-old policeman in Birmingham who led a secret double-life as head of an organised crime group was caught out after suspicious colleagues saw him turning up for work in a £170,000 Ferrari. Osman Iqbal, who was on a £25,000-a-year salary as an emergency response police officer with West Midlands Police astonished his fellow officers who saw him arrive at Kings Heath police station in a Ferrari 458. Whether it was jealous colleagues or otherwise, someone tipped off the anti-corruption department who began to look
National into his financial affairs for clues as to how he could afford the supercar. Shocked detectives discovered Iqbal was laundering hundreds of thousands of pounds through a fake business, which eventually linked him to an organised crime group that ran brothels and sold drugs. Iqbal along with his partner convicted armed robber Talib Hussain, 33, led a gang who picked up clients from strip bars in exclusive areas of London. Iqbal was jailed for seven years and four months and sacked by the force last year after admitting various conspiracy charges, but appeared in court this month, where he admitted three counts of misconduct in a public office. Warwick Crown Court heard he made unauthorised attempts to access police intelligence systems on behalf of Birmingham religious leader. Iqbal will be sentenced next month for the misconduct offences. Chief Insp Martin Brennan, from West Midlands
Police’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit, said the cars and greed gave the men away. He said: "This was a highlyorganised and well-orchestrated criminal network but what makes it particularly reprehensible is that fact a serving police officer was at the centre of it all. "Iqbal and his associates generated their income by running ‘exclusive’ brothels and peddling Class A drugs. "For them, it was all about the money and the fast cars and they didn’t care who they were exploiting and what laws they were breaking in the process. "Their greed was their downfall and when they were seen driving around in their supercars it didn’t take us long to piece together exactly what they were up to and take action. "We constantly target networks like this and it doesn’t matter who’s involved, we will seek to use the full weight of the law against them." Insp Tracey McGrath, from the Counter Corruption Unit, said: "The vast majority of West Midlands Police officers and staff are honest, hard-working people. "But occasionally there are people who disgracefully betray the public and even their own colleagues by exploiting their status for their own gain. "Where officers and staff fall short of the standards we expect, we will always take action. "In this case we’ll be looking to seize all the assets Iqbal acquired as a result of his criminal activity and his police pension too."

Female detainees at immigration detention centre routinely humiliated by male staff
A report identified that female asylum seekers detained in the Yarl’s Wood immigration detention centre are routinely humiliated by male staff who monitor them while they are dressing, showering and using the toilet, or are naked in their rooms. Women for Refugee Women (WRW) interviewed 38 women who were recently or currently detained at Yarl's Wood - the Bedfordshire detention centre that houses women and family's who are awaiting immigration clearance. The report also identifies that these women have been victims of sexual violence in their home countries. Nineteen of the women interviewed said they had been raped, and 28 women in total indicated they had experienced forced marriage, forced prostitution, female genital mutilation or some other form of sexual violence before coming to the UK. The report also found high levels of depression among detainees, with 19 of the 38 interviewed saying they had been put on suicide watch for all or part of their time at the centre. The study also raises concerns at the use of solitary confinement. The report follows earlier research into sexual assaults by staff on detainees in Yarl’s Wood. In June 2014, the centre’s management said 31 allegations of sexual contact had been investigated and a number of staff were dismissed. Serco, the outsourcing firm that runs Yarl’s Wood under contract to the Home Office, had its contract renewed last November to run the centre for another eight years. In a statement, Serco said the allegations were “uncorroborated”. Norman Abusin, Serco’s contract director at Yarl’s Wood, said: “We take all complaints seriously and we have strict procedures for dealing with them. They are always fully investigated and, if appropriate, disciplinary action is taken.” The decision to detain women who have been trafficked,
tortured or suffered sexual abuse has already caused controversy and Labour has promised to prohibit the detention of pregnant women and women who have experienced torture or sexual abuse if it wins the election. Researchers focused on the problem of male staff intimidating detainees, by routinely invading their privacy. “Almost all (of the women interviewed) said men watched them in intimate situations, such as while naked, partly dressed in the shower or on the toilet,” the report says. “Of the 38 women, 33 said they experienced men seeing them in these situations. Of the 33, 13 said men saw them naked, 29 said men saw them partially dressed, 29 said men saw them in bed, 16 said men saw them in the shower and 14 said men saw them using the toilet.” Serco guidelines say staff should not enter detainees’ rooms for searches without knocking. The women said such searches made them scared, uncomfortable, angry and ashamed. Detainees also reported high levels of bullying, with 29 saying they felt they had been bullied and 25 saying a member of staff had been racist. “They always come in without knocking… even if you are in the shower or toilet,” one woman said. “Men enter your room without knocking and see you in bed every day. I have been seen partly naked more than once,” another detainee said. “One day I was in the bathroom taking a shower, they asked me to come out. I was naked,” another told researchers. A fourth woman said: “Because of sexual abuse, I used to feel very uncomfortable with male officers in my room when I was in bed. I felt very vulnerable. They said they don’t have to give you warning. They all enter and search.” Detainees report requesting that female staff should carry out searches, and being told this was not possible. The Home Office said the latest independent inspection by Her
Majesty’s chief inspector of prisons found Yarl’s Wood to be a respectful and safe place. A spokesman said: “Detention and removal are essential elements of an effective immigration system. We are committed to treating all detainees with dignity and respect, and take any allegations to the contrary very seriously. “We have invited Women for Refugee Women to supply details of the cases in question so that they can be investigated fully.” Asylum seekers can be detained at any point in the asylum process if they are deemed “likely to abscond”, or if they have been refused asylum and their removal from the UK is imminent. In 2013, 2,038 women were detained after seeking asylum in the UK; 43% of them were held for more than a month. Asylum seekers are often unaware of the reasons for their detention and most women interviewed found the arrest process traumatising. Fourteen of the women interviewed in the report said there were more than five members of staff involved in their arrest, and one said there were more than 10. Natasha Walter, director of Women for Refugee Women, said: “Survivors of sexual violence who come to the UK seeking protection are routinely being locked up and are denied privacy and dignity in detention. “The behaviour of staff, particularly male staff, in Yarl’s Wood detention centre is adding to the trauma of survivors of sexual violence. “Detention has no place in the asylum process. It is expensive, unjust and inefficient to lock up people who have come here to seek asylum. “Women who seek protection in the UK should be able to live in the community while their claims are considered.” During 2013, the Home Office detained 2,038 women who had come to the UK seeking asylum at detention centres like Yarl's Wood, the WRW report says. 43 per cent were held for more than a month.

Death threats sent after magazine attack
London Mosque targeted with hate mail
WORSHIP: Finsbury Park Mosque, in North London, has recieved some 15 Islamophobic emails and letters since the Charlie Hebdo attacks
A general secretary at a London Mosque, which had previous strong links with extremist preacher, Abu Hamza, has said the place of worship has received Islamophobic email and letters since the Paris attack. Mohammed Kozar, from the Finsbury Park Mosque, said around 15 messages of hate have been received despite much support from the community. Amongst the letters were hand drawn images depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a devil worshipper, as well as death threats to members of the mosque. “Most of them are nasty drawings about our prophet and our books,” Mr Kozar said. “Some of them make death threats against our community, so it's quite frightening for our community and our mosque.” The Finsbury Park Mosque gained notoriety in the past for its involvement with radical
preachers, yet over the past decade, has reformed itself into a place for interfaith and peaceful worship. Nonetheless, one former attendee, Djamel Beghal, is believed to have mentored two of the three gunmen involved in the Charlie Hebdo attack. Amedy Coulibaly and Cherif Kouachi are both believed to have been in contact with the previous member, and Mr Kozar adds that it is frustrating for his mosque to be associated with past extremists. “It makes me feel very upset and very angry,” he said. “People should realise that changes have taken place here from 2005 until now and the community feels it's not fair to always link the mosque in such a negative way to what's happening elsewhere. “It's not fair for them after the work they've done here; changing it from a hostile atmosphere to a cohesive atmosphere.
“I can't deny or confirm whether this person (Djamel Beghal) had links to the mosque before 2005 but I can confirm it never happened whilst we were here.” Fiyaz Mughal, director of Islamophobia watchdog Tell MAMA, said it wasn’t only the
DISAPPOINTED: Mohammed Kozar, general secretary at Finsbury Park Mosque, says he is still frustrated with the mosque’s links to pasts extremists
Finsbury Park Mosque which had received Islamophobic attacks, with a rise in such events seen nationally. “There is a vast amount of online hate around but we've also had street-based incidents reported to us, particularly from mosques,” he said. “We're also having members of the public - particularly visible Muslim women - who are unfortunately coming back to us saying people are saying things to them again around the Charlie Hebdo affair; saying things like 'I'm Charlie - you are not.' “We've received information from umbrella bodies that work with Muslim charities. They have sent us information around leaflets that have been sent and, again, hate mail that has been sent to Muslim charities. “So faith institutions as well as Muslim charities are the ones receiving some form of hate mail at the time.”

‘Mobama’ Despite being banned until a year ago from entering the US, Modi is now an ‘ally’ says President Obama on his India visit
The White House has said during a visit to New Delhi by President Barack Obama that India could play a role in battling Islamic State. U.S. Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said India's involvement could focus on intelligence on the flow of money and militants to the radical Islamist group active in Syria and Iraq rather than deploying troops on the ground. "When you look at our broader counter-terrorism cooperation and how we're tracking the flow of fighters and terrorist financing there, I do think we want to find space for cooperation," he told reporters. The comments came hours after Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi together watched a dazzling Republic Day military
parade. Excitement ran high over Obama's visit, which began on Sunday 25th January with a clutch of deals to unlock billions of dollars in nuclear trade and deepen defence ties. Most significant was an agreement on issues that, despite a groundbreaking 2006 pact, had stopped U.S. companies from setting up nuclear reactors in India and had become one of the major irritants in bilateral relations. Until a year ago, Modi had been banned from visiting the United States after deadly Hindu-Muslim riots in 2002 in a state he governed. Obama was the first U.S. president to attend India's Republic Day parade, a show of military prowess that was long associated with the anti-
Americanism of the Cold War. He and Modi sat behind a rainspotted screen as the parade unfolded along Rajpath, an elegant lawn-bordered boulevard dating from the British colonial era that connects the presidential palace to India Gate. Helicopters showered petals on the crowds, and then tanks, missiles, stiffly saluting soldiers, brass bands and dancers filed past the guests. Security was tight across the city, where tens of thousands of police and paramilitary personnel were deployed on street corners and rooftops. Obama's presence at the parade - at Modi's personal invitation - marks the latest upturn in a roller-coaster relationship that a year ago was scarred by protectionism and a
fiery diplomatic spat. The United States views India as a vast market and potential counterweight in Asia to a more assertive China, but has frequently been frustrated with the slow pace of New Delhi's economic reforms and unwillingness to side with Washington in international affairs. Elected last May, Modi has injected a new vitality into the economy and foreign relations and, to Washington's delight, has begun pushing back against China across Asia. India, with the world's thirdlargest population of Muslims, has not openly engaged so far in international efforts to combat the spread of Islamic State. Indian Muslims have largely shunned radical causes, and police say only four Indians are known to have joined the group. Analysts say that, under Modi, India appears more willing to engage on issues beyond its borders, including security in the South China Sea and Islamist militancy. Modi and Obama have committed to close consultation on global crises, including in Iraq and Syria. They also agreed to a 10-year framework for defence ties and struck deals on cooperation that included joint production of drone aircraft and equipment for Lockheed Martin Corp's C-130 military transport plane. Other deals ranged from an Obama-Modi hotline - India's first at a leadership level - to financing initiatives aimed at helping India use renewable energy to lower carbon intensity.

Imran Khan gets court summons for defamation
IN A SPAT! A court in Islamabad, Pakistan, has summoned Imran Khan over a defamation notice filed by a former Chief Justice. Imran Khan, Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf (PTI) Chairman, had accused former Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry of poll rigging in the 2013 general election. Filed by the former Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s counsels - Sheikh Ehsanuddin and Taufeeq Asif, the libel suit argues that Khan's allegations against Chaudhry were defamatory and claimed Rs20 billion (£131 million) in damages. Chaudhry petitioned to the court, saying that the rigging allegations levelled against him were false. He also recounted how in a written response to the previous libel notice which was issued on 24th July last year, Imran's lawyers had said that he did not mean to “abuse or disrespect any member of the judiciary”, and had urged the former chief justice to “reconsider the idea of entering into personal litigation”.
Chaudhry said that Khan should pay the damages for attempting to discredit him. The District and Sessions judge Justice Nazir Ahmed Gajana has given a deadline of 29th January for

Imran Khan to appear in court by 29th January with his response. Last year, Chaudhry had sent a libel notice, stating that legal proceedings would be initiated against the PTI chief if he failed to apologise for the allegations he had levelled against the former chief justice. Imran had said he stood by the allegations he had levelled against Iftikhar Chaudhry, while his aides claimed the lawyer drafted the letter without consulting with the PTI chairman. Speaking to media representatives outside his Bani Gala residence, Imran said that he does not have Rs20 billion to give as a compensatory amount to the former CJ. The PTI chief said that he would pursue this matter, claiming that the CJ's role in the 2013 election rigging is coming to the forefront. "Rs20 billion is quite a lot of money and I don't have that amount. I will ask Arsalan Iftikhar for money as he has managed to make a lot of it," Khan said.

• INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS QUIT: Leela Samson has accused the board of ‘corruption and coercion’
Indian censor board chief quits over film row India's censor board chief has resigned after reports that a film originally rejected by her panel has been cleared for release by an appeals board. Leela Samson got involved in a spat after the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal approved the film ‘Messenger of God’, directed by and starring guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. Ms Samson and her team for the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had found the film unsuitable for the public because it promoted superstition. She also accused the state-run CBFC of "corruption and coercion". Ms Samson took over in August last year after the board's former chief was arrested on charges of corruption. Ms Samson said the apparent clearance of the film was "a mockery" of her organisation after Ms Samson's panel rejected The American U.S. advocacy group Human Rights Watch has urged China to revise draft legislation aimed at combating terrorism, saying it was "a license to commit human rights abuses". The law, which was made public for consultation last November, would establish a new counter-terrorism body that would have the power to designate organisations and members as terrorists without any protections of due process. The draft's definition of terrorism includes "thought, speech, or behaviour" that attempt to "subvert state power", "incite ethnic hatred" or "split the state". Subversion and splittism are catch-all charges that have been used against dissidents. Human Rights Watch China director Sophie Richardson called for the draft law to be brought in line with international standards, saying that "in
it. "My resignation is final," she told the Press Trust of India news agency. A CBFC member, Nandini Sardesai, said she was concerned the film was cleared in haste. "We all saw the movie. It was the collective decision of eight of us that the movie was not suitable for public viewing," Ms Sardesai said. "Usually the Tribunal takes 15 to 30 days to clear a film, but this case was cleared within 24 hours." Ms Sardesai has been quoted saying that they had rejected the film because it "promotes superstition and blind faith". The guru's website mentions ‘Messenger of God’ as a "movie which aims to spread social awareness in the society". "While the whole story depicts the truth, yet action, suspense and drama are also being added to make it more interesting".
Ms Samson said she had resigned because of "interference, coercion and corruption" of the government-appointed members and officers of the board. Last August, the former president of the board Rakesh Kumar was arrested for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a film producer and removed from the position. Films cannot be publicly exhibited in India unless they have been certified by the board, which is based in Mumbai and has nine regional offices. According to its website, the board has a legally empowered mission to "ensure healthy entertainment, recreation and education to the public". Its approval process can be slow and laborious, with multiple rounds of cuts, sometimes demanded before one of its four certificates is granted.
“China draft terrorism law is a license to commit abuses”
its present form this law is little more than a license to commit human rights abuses". "The Chinese government needs to respect rights, not build a new architecture of surveillance," Richardson said in a statement. The law would require all telecommunication and internet service providers to help the government in preventing the spread of terrorism-related content. Public areas would be outfitted with facial recognition equipment - a system that "could easily be abused for personal or political ends", Human Rights Watch said. China has stressed that it is facing
a serious and complex struggle against terrorism. Hundreds of people have been killed over the past two years in the far western region of Xinjiang in unrest the government has blamed on Islamists who want to establish a separate state called East Turkestan. China's Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a faxed inquiry for comment. Rights groups and exiles blame the government's repressive policies for stoking resentment among the Muslim Uighur people who call Xinjiang home. Last year, China said it would set up a national anti-terrorism intelligence system.

• INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS Hundreds of people are squeezed under a banyan tree's shady canopy to have blood drawn by just three nurses, working assembly-line fast. Others wait outside this dusty rural health centre to get their vitals taken and give urine samples. Most of the 1,000 villagers have come here on foot and have stood for hours under the hot sun - not because they feel sick, but out of fear. They want to know if they will be the next victims of a mysterious kidney disease that has killed thousands of farmers in Sri Lanka's rice basket. Many have watched neighbours and loved ones quickly succumb to deaths after their kidneys gave out. In the worst-hit villages, it kills as many as 10 people every month. No one knows why. "In some cases, you only know if a certain person died of kidney disease after the autopsy," says Kalyani Samarasinghe, 47, standing outside the health center with a handful of medical papers and a cotton ball taped to her arm. "If you get a pain in the stomach or something, then you think: Is it the kidney?" The disease has killed up to 20,000 people over the past 20 years and sickened another 70,000 to 400,000. It has expanded from two districts

to seven in the North Central province's dry zone, where farming was transformed after the introduction of modern techniques in the 1960s and '70s. No cases have been detected elsewhere in the country, and research has failed to determine the cause. Some blame the water, heavy use of pesticides and fertilizer. Others wonder if it's something in the food, or whether heavy metals or toxic algae could be the source. Villagers have been told to give up lake fish, aluminum cooking utensils and illicit home-brewed alcohol, but no one's sure if any of it helps. Dr. Rajeeva Dassanayake, a kidney specialist at the area's largest hospital in Anuradhapura, has come to the screening to try to calm the crowd. "You need not fear and flee from this place," he says. "There are a lot of things being said by many people. Until they have finished fighting each other and come up with an answer, we can say nothing." Similar diseases are wiping out thousands of farmers in parts of Central America, India and Egypt. In hard-hit Nicaragua and El Salvador, some believe agrochemicals are the problem, while others organs down. think years of prolonged In Sri Lanka, a report dehydration in the baking published by the World heat is shutting workers' Health Organization two
years ago found kidney disease in 15 percent of adults across three affected districts. More women were affected
overall, but men over 39 years old were more severely sickened. Elevated cadmium and pesticide residues were detected in urine, leading the authors to surmise they may be damaging patients' kidneys over time, in combination with other factors such as arsenic. Water, which was the source widely suspected as the culprit, came up clean. However the WHO study's Geneva-based author, Shanthi Mendis, says it could still be playing a key role when combined with other elements. She adds that the government's top two priorities should be supplying safe drinking water to residents and regulating the use of agrochemicals. The WHO report documented raised levels of cadmium and lead in certain plants and vegetables, such as lotus root and tobacco. Some question whether these heavy metals could be leaching into the soil and groundwater from pesticides and fertilizers, which have been found to have high levels of cadmium in previous studies. The Agriculture Ministry says samples are regularly tested and come back within permitted limits, which are much stricter than those in neighboring countries. Still, farmers douse their fields with too many
chemicals, often using concoctions that include kerosene and multiple poisons. Most do not wear protective gear. The government placed a ban on some agrochemicals since the WHO report came out, but it has not been enforced and the pesticides remain available. For those already sickened, care is often inadequate. The country of 20 million, which emerged from a quartercentury of civil war in 2009, has just 183 dialysis machines, forcing most villagers to receive less than the three recommended weekly treatments. Since no national cadaver transplant program exists, many patients post desperate newspaper ads with their photos and blood types pleading for kidney donors. The Health Ministry is trying to screen the area to determine how many people are sick with the so-called chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology, which often strikes several members of one family. Fear is breeding stigma, but it is also driving many villagers to be screened. They hope early detection can help slow the disease, which typically does not produce symptoms until late. But their biggest worries is about the risk to children.

University u-turn after security concerns CHANGE: Despite being told the call to prayer would be heard from the Chapel Tower earlier in the week, a decision to reverse the ruling was passed on Friday
Call for Prayer decision reversed An American university, which announced plans to broadcast a call to prayer from its chapel tower every Friday, has reversed that same decision following a number of objections.
CRITICAL: Evangelist, Franklin Graham, was one of the people to controversially call for the call to prayer to be removed
Duke University, in North Carolina, initially had planned to broadcast a ‘moderately amplified’ call to prayer, read by members of the Muslim Students Association, for approximately three minutes. However, plans will now see the students gather in a grassy area near the same chapel tower before going inside to a specified room to conduct their weekly prayer service. Duke’s vice president for public affairs and government relations, Michael Schoenfeld, said it would still be the decision of the students if they wished to use ‘some sort of amplification’. Explaining why the university took the decision to go back on their original plans, Mr Schoenfeld said: “There was considerable traffic and conversation and even a little bit of confusion, both within the campus and certainly outside, about what Duke was doing. “The purposes
and goals and even the facts had been so mischaracterized as to turn it into a divisive situation, not a unifying situation.” Amongst those who were dissatisfied at the proposals was well known evangelist, Franklin Graham, who urged the university to cancel the call to prayer due to recent violence against Christians which he attributed to Muslims. Schoenfeld added that he had also received emails and calls from other alumni and people in the community, yet said the reversal was not due to Graham’s opposition. He also said there were concerns about safety and security, but declined to elaborate on whether any specific threats had been received. He added: “It is important to note that there will continue to be a call to prayer and service as there has been for many years. “The only thing that has changed is that it will not come from the bell tower of the Duke Chapel as previously announced. “Our Muslim community enriches the university in countless ways. We welcome the active expression of their faith tradition, and all others, in ways that are meaningful and visible.” More than 700, of Duke’s 15,000 students identify themselves as Muslim.

India’s leading global ambassadors comprising of A-list actors, actresses, renowned directors, dignitaries and esteemed public figures came together in an unprecedented show of unity. The Action/2015 campaign, which was announced by education champion and Nobel Peace Prize 2014 winner Malala Yousafzai, is a growing movement of more than a thousand organisations in over 120 countries, which is urging political leaders to honour the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The campaign is billed as one of the biggest global outreach initiatives in history to address world-changing issues of climate change, poverty and inequality, which saw a massive outpouring of solidarity. Celebrities such as actor Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor, Malaika Arora-Khan, Pulkit Samrat, Kiara Advani, Mohit Marwah, Arfi Lamba author
Chetan Bhagat, producers Ashvini Yardi (Grazing Goat Pictures) and Ritesh Sidhwani (Excel Entertainment), TV personalities Gautam Rode, sport stars Yuvraj Singh and Vijendra Singh are some of the growing list of supporters. The initiative garnered further support on the 15th of January 2015, when an open letter, signed by such renowned activists as Indian actor Aamir Khan, was sent to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage further action by India to address such critical issues as poverty, climate change and equality. Other major names to sign the open letter include Queen Rania Al Abdullah, U2 frontman Bono, Hollywood actors Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Hugh Jackman, philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates, UK-Sudanese entrepreneur Mo Ibrahim, singer Shakira. The campaign issues a stark warning; that while leaders have a historic chance in 2015 to make progress on some of the greatest challenges of our time at two critically important summits, currently too few leaders are playing the leadership roles needed. They set out their fear that if this does not change, leaders could be “sleepwalking the world towards one of the greatest failures of recent history.” India, although a country emerging as a powerful and revolutionary force on the world stage, still worryingly accounts for one-third of the world’s poor.

Entertainment Mughal India in 1659, the imperial court, a place of opulence and excess; music, eunuchs and harems, witnesses a battle of wills. Two brothers, whose mother’s death inspired the Taj Mahal, are heirs to this Muslim empire. Now they fight ferociously for succession. Dara, the crown prince, has the love of the people – and of his emperor father – but younger brother Aurangzeb holds a different vision for India's future. Islam inspires poetry in Dara and puritanical rigour in Aurangzeb. Can Jahanara, their beloved sister, assuage Aurangzeb's resolve to seize the Peacock Throne and purge the empire? Spanning the princes’ lives from cradle to grave, ‘Dara’ is an intense domestic drama which is brought to life even more with a stunning score by composer Niraj Chag (Much Ado About Nothing, RSC, 2012). The soundtrack to ‘Dara’

This time he teams up with the Canadian reggae star Roach Killa to deliver a Punjabi dance-floor smash. The video, more of a mini-film, was shot by the talented Jazz Virk and features Roach Killa like you've never seen him before. Looking more like Mr Bean than his normal cool self he plays the comical role of Professor Googly Akh. Set in an office environment, nerdy Roach is a massive fan of the real Roach Killa and dreams of being him! Meanwhile, his cool and suave friend Pintu, played by DJ Dips, spends his days chatting up their beautiful co-workers. Professor Googly Akh is sick and tired of his job and the only thing that keeps him motivated is his stunning work colleague Chandar Mukhi! Then of course Pintu messes up the office printer and things go from bad to worse, especially for the printer! Catch the full video
to get the whole story. DJ Dips is of course a familiar name in the music industry. Not only a successful club and wedding DJ, he has also produced a number of songs which have gained him popularity the world over. H Dhami, Lehmber Hussainpuri, Kaka Bhaniawala, Sabar Koti, D Sarb, Saini Surinder and Juggy D are just a few names that Dips has worked with over the past few years. Possibly his biggest song to date is 'Tohar' featuring Garry Sandhu which has amassed over 3 million views on YouTube. DJ Dips has a number of exciting projects in the pipeline including his album. He says: "Over the past two years I've been working on my second solo album called 'This DJ'. I've got some great tunes on there and some really good feature artists like Angrej Ali, Geeta Zaildar, Heera and a few more. Watch out for it, I know you're gonna love it!"
'Kaun Nachdi' is released by Visual Eyes Records on the 29th January via iTunes and other digital stores.
takes root in classical Indian music and Qawwali, the devotional music of Sufism. Chag’s score brilliantly combines traditional Indian instruments – such as the santoor, Indian classical violin and Indian percussion – with touches of sharper, modern sounds and textures, invoking the opulence of the royal courts of the enigmatic Mughal Empire. The lead track, ‘Ali Mola’, a Qawwali piece, accompanies the scene when Dara goes to see a Sufi mystic for a blessing before embarking on a war. During the scene the mystic tells Dara a story so profound the prince finds himself moved to tears. The experience of religious ecstasy through the repetition of Qawwali chants at the core of Sufi devotional music, along with the elements of Indian classical music, mirror both the Mughal setting of the play and Dara’s own experience. Adapted by Tanya Ronder from Shahid Nadeem’s play, originally performed by Ajoka Theatre, Pakistan, Dara opens in the Lyttelton Theatre on 27th January 2015.

Soaring high Film inspired by the true story of world’s first unmanned airplane Ayushmann Khurrana – Lead Actor Q. So what’s ‘Hawaizaada’ about? A: It’s about the flight of the first unmanned airplane in India in 1895. When I learnt more about the character and the story of the event, I found that this was before even the Wright brothers in America, which I find incredible. India had a real role to play in the history of aviation and I think it’s great we’ve got this chance to show that to the world.
Q. And your character? A: I play Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, who designed the plane. He was a fascinating character both as a historical figure in India’s history but also as a human being. Vibhu Puri (director) offered me this amazing story of an unsung hero. The way he has fictionalised it, the way he has taken the creative liberty and added his own flavour to the story of a guy who made the world’s first aircraft is incredible.”
Forthcoming big-screen release ‘Hawaizaada’ is set to inspire a new generation of filmgoers in a tale of unwavering daring, ingenuity and glory. Releasing internationally in cinemas on 30th January, ‘Hawaizaada’ celebrates the Indian spirit of adventure and invention as well as the country’s prolific freedom struggle, as it unfolds the story of one man’s dreams and aspirations amidst considerable adversity. Directed by Vibhu Puri, the film features an ensemble cast of emerging and established actors, who all showcase their considerable talents in this thought-provoking and inspiring story. Playing the lead role of Shivkar Bapuji Talpade is multitalented actor, musician and presenter Ayushmann Khurrana who is joined by rising star Pallavi Sharda who essays the role of Sitara. The star line-up is completed by veteran awardwinning actor Mithun Chakraborthy.
Q. We heard that you weren’t paid for this film, is this true? A: Yes, it’s true. To be honest, I didn’t look to do this film for the money. The film was having some trouble with budgets and I knew I didn’t want to charge for my services because it was worth it! There are some films you do to satisfy your soul, not your stomach.
Q: Hawaizaada took one-and-a-half years to make. What made it take so long? A: There were some complications regarding budgets, which did delay the filming. Unfortunately some things are out of your control so you have to just get on with it. But delays aside, this film took a long time to make because it was worth it. A lot of films get churned out but this film needed to have time taken over it. Vibhu insisted that we get it right even if it took a dozen takes but if that’s what it takes to make a great film, that’s the price you’ve got to pay. He’s got a real eye for detail and despite the cast groaning about doing a certain shot over and over again, in the end you’ve got a great scene.
Q: What was it like working with Vibhu Puri? A: I didn’t know too much about him other than what friends had said about him. With them though, he had a great reputation despite being very new on the scene. I think this was his first full-length film. He’s young, but he works like a seasoned pro. He’s like all directors should be, to the point and knows how to talk to his cast. Vibhu had a very clear vision of how he wanted the film to go and he did as much as he could to make that happen. He was keen on hearing other people’s point of view, which I like. Sometimes an actor would suggest a way a certain shot was taken and he’d say ‘Actually, that’s better!’
Q: You’ve said before that this film has touched you. Would you like to explain why? A: There were several reasons. When you spent 18 months on anything, it’s always going to be of significance to you. In the future, when I look back, I’ll think of the time I spent with this team and on ‘Hawaizaada’. I also found the storyline fascinating. It was a story that I had to fully research to get under this man’s skin and be him. When you become a real life person, it’s very different to playing a fictional one, there’s something to base your character on. With films you get out of them what you put in. I put my heart and soul into this film because I truly cared about it. When you care that much about a film, it’s always going to have a huge effect on you.
The film tells the story of young school drop-out ‘Shivi’ (Ayushmann Khurrana), who falls in love with popular rich girl Sitara (Pallavi Sharda). But their turbulent and tempestuous relationship does not run smoothly and Sitara decides to leave the city to spare Shivi any further pain. The heartbroken and dejected Shivi slips into a constant drunken stupor in a world filled with debauchery and sinfulness. However, His life is dramatically changed when he meets ‘Shastry’, (Mithun Chakraborthy), a Vedic scholar, who inspires him to change his shallow, unfulfilled life. Shastry shares his life-long dream of making an airplane based on the principles of the Hindu religious texts, the Vedas. Hence begins the two men’s poignant, courageous and exciting journey, one a whimsical genius and the other a witty, crazy dreamer. However, the course of life and love never runs smoothly, as Shivi finds himself the perpetrator of the ultimate betrayal against his good friend Shastry. Will Shivi be able to redeem himself after his unthinkable actions and will he and his true love Sitara reunite and realise the life-long dream of his friend and mentor? We catch up with the film lead actor and actress to find out more.
Pallavi Sharda – Lead Actress Q: Tell us something about your role in Hawaizaada.
favour you, you’re still not going to get where you want.
A: I play a ‘Tamasha’ dancer in the movie. I think my character has come up very well. All thanks to our director Vibhu Puri & my co-star Ayushmann Khurrana who encouraged me to give my best to the film. I won’t like to give away much detail on my role at this moment, I just want all my fans to go watch me in a completely different role. I got another chance to show that I can play these kinds of roles too. I believe I'm a versatile actress and hope that people would love my work.
Q: How was your experience working with Ayushmann Khurrana?
Q: How has your experience been in the film industry considering you come from a non-film background? A: Yes, I come from a non-film background and to survive in the film industry, one needs talent as well as luck. Of course in an industry like this, acting and talent is the most important. But luck is an important factor too - I certainly believe that you can’t be successful without talent, but even if you’re talented and luck doesn’t
A: Director Vibhu Puri wanted us to attend workshops so we could get under the skin of our respective characters. We built a good rapport, and as we are both fairly new in the industry we would end up discussing a lot of our scenes and bounce ideas and opinions off each other. Ayushmann as a co-star is easy to work with and is quite a natural actor.
Q: If you could portray any character who would it be? A: It would have to be Madhubala. I would love to do a biopic on the legendary actress who was recognized all over for her timeless acting and beauty. I like her story, her life was interesting and there is romanticism in her life. I think it would make for an interesting story. Her films like ‘Mughal-E-Azam’, ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’, ‘Barsaat ki Raat’ or ‘Kaala Paani’
have immortalised Bollywood and I have watched all of her films countless times. In fact, I’m a trained classical dancer and often during my rehearsals I used to watch Madhubala’s songs and try to emulate her moves and expressions.
Q: How was your experience working with Mithun Chakraborty? A: I consider it an honour to work with someone like him. Mithun Sir is a legend that everyone has idolised and watched growing up. Whether it’s his disco dance moves, dialogue delivery or on-screen presence, he has the spark that will never leave him. It’s so inspiring to watch him or just be around him, honestly. I was so nervous when I met him for the first time on the sets of ‘Hawaizaada’, but he was very humble and easy-going. He is absolutely amazing to work with and I learnt so much just by observing him. His experience shows in every frame as he’s that effortless. He has amazing energy and his enthusiasm of an 18year old just rubs off on anyone who is

around you.
Q: What was the biggest challenge you faced during the film? A: I think personally it would have to be playing the character of a Marathi girl. I had to undergo special training to learn the various nuances of Marathi as a language, its culture as well as dancing since I play a dancer in the film. I have always loved dancing and performing different styles is every dancer’s dream. Vibhu Puri also asked me to closely observe Maharashtrian mannerisms and do my own research on things that would help me get under the skin of the character. Looking back, it all seems quite amazing how much I have learnt but back then during the initial phases it was quite daunting and challenging. But every actor goes through these various phases to become better at what they do so I am thrilled with the results and hope that the audience will enjoy my character as much.

2015 promises to be a year packed with tough, ambitious sporting challenges for Maserati and Giovanni Soldini as they prepare to compete in prestigious races and embark on new ocean record attempts. After two years and 60,000 miles of sea, the equivalent of two trips around the world, Maserati has re-emerged after two months in the yard for specialist maintenance work, ready and eager to get going again. Aside from Soldini (skipper), Maserati will have a complement of 10 determined and expert crew aboard: Italians Guido Broggi (boat captain), Corrado Rossignoli (first bowman), Andrea Fantini (pitman), Francesco Malingri (media) and John Elkann (tailer and boat owner); German Boris Herrmann (navigator) ;

Spaniard Oliver Herrera Perez (second bowman); Frenchman Gwen Riou, Monegasque Pierre Casiraghi and Swede Andreas Axelsson (all tailers). Maserati’s first event of 2015 is the RORC Caribbean 600 Race, which casts off on February 23 from Antigua. Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in collaboration with the Antigua Yacht Club, this is the seventh edition of the longest and most important race of the Caribbean season. The 605-mile route winds its
way north from Antigua, leaving Barbuda, the Nevis Islands, Saba and St. Barth to starboard, then around St Martin and on down to Guadeloupe before snaking back to Antigua. In May, Maserati is scheduled to attempt to break the San FranciscoShanghai record, which retraces the 7,000-mile route across the Pacific Ocean plied by the legendary clippers in the mid-19th century. In 1853, Swordfish, built two years before and under the command of Captain Charles Collins, established herself as
Toyota to increase production of fuel cell car By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk
Toyota says it will increase production of its Mirai fuel cell car. The hydrogen-powered saloon was launched in Japan on 15th December last year and will be introduced in the UK and other selected European markets during 2015. The new plan calls for production to increase from 700 units this year to approximately 2,000 in 2016 and around 3,000 in 2017. Toyota decided the supply structure should be adjusted to reflect the level of demand for the vehicle, in view of around 1,500 orders being received in the first month of sales in Japan and the prospect of the model being launched in Europe and the USA later this year. Following the production increases, sales plans for Japan, the US and Europe will be formulated, taking into consideration the level of hydrogen infrastructure development, energy policies, car purchasing subsidies, consumer demand, environmental regulations and other factors in each region.
the fastest ever clipper, covering the route in 32 days and 9 hours, thereby slashing two days off the record previously held by Romance of the Sea. Lastly, as the year draws to a close, Giovanni Soldini and the Maserati team will be tackling one of the world’s most famous and challenging events, the Rolex Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race, a punishing 628-nautical mile gallop in extreme conditions during which some of the world’s top boats do battle for this coveted trophy.

Staged by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and the Royal Club of Tasmania, the race was first held in 1945 when just nine competitors lined up at the start. In last year’s 70th edition there were no less 117, 93 of which made it all the way to Hobart. The current race record belongs to the Australian yacht Wild Oats XI owned by Bob Oately, (winner of eight of the last 10 editions, 2014 included), which in 2012 sprinted the distance between Sydney and Hobart in 1 day, 18 hours, 23 seconds and 12 hundredths of a second. There have been some truly gruelling editions of the race, including in 1998 when an exceptionally severe storm sank five boats and six lives were lost. That year, of the 115 yachts that began the race, only 44 reached Hobart.

Continued from page 79 Starting in 2015, the Huracán GT3 will line up in the Blancpain Endurance Series that runs over five venues in Europe, among which is included the famous SpaFrancorchamps 24-hours race. The growth and success of Lamborghini motorsports activities throughout the world has heightened its appeal Equipped with an Alu-Carbon chassis and a fully integrated FIAcompliant roll-cage, the subframe has been modified both at the front and rear to accommodate a high performance water radiator (front), and for a better positioning of the gearbox (rear), improving aerodynamics. The kerb weight is 1239 kg with a 42/58 front/rear weight distribution. The bodywork is in composite materials and aerodynamics have been tuned to grant the best possible air flow penetration, and maximum adherence and traction in any condition on any asphalt. The showroom success enjoyed by the award-winning Peugeot 308 looks set to reach even greater heights with the arrival of a new dynamic flagship – the stunning 308 GT. Available in Hatchback and SW body styles, both models offer assertive new styling, outstanding performanceoriented engines and bespoke chassis modifications to create a lower ride height. The result is an exceptional on-the-road experience that will delight the most enthusiastic drivers. The enhancements clearly embody Peugeot’s continued move up-market, highlighted by the 308’s recognition as the 2014 European Car of the Year. The new Peugeot 308 GT retains all the elements which have made the 308 range such a huge commercial hit throughout Europe. This includes the striking exterior design, innovative i-Cockpit cabin, versatile interior and high perceived quality. Remarkable engine efficiency, with high fuel economy and ultra-low emissions, is also part of the 308 GT package. The 308 GT’s unique design quality is immediately obvious – it presents a great aerodynamic and stylistic purity, most
notable where the black lacquered door mirrors merge with the tinted windows. Visibly widened by its side sill finishers, the 308 GT sits on 18-inch ‘Diamant’ wheels, shod with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres. Their fluted spokes and engraved motif are also available on 308 GT-Line models, and it’s been fitted with top-of-the-range headlights made up of 62 LEDs. To deliver maximum enjoyment, the 308 GT features enhanced new chassis settings. Ride height has been lowered by 7mm at the front and 10mm at the rear for a more dynamic drive. The revised suspension is mated to a choice of high-performance engines, one petrol and one diesel, that both meet stringent Euro 6 emissions standards. The four-cylinder 1.6-litre THP 205 Stop & Start petrol engine is specified with a sixspeed manual gearbox to make the most of its 285Nm of torque, available between 1,750 and 4,500rpm. This high level of performance is combined with well controlled CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, from just 130g/km and 50.4mpg. The four-cylinder 2.0-litre BlueHDi 180 diesel engine also offers a high level of performance. It delivers its maximum power of 180hp at 3,750rpm and its maximum torque of 400Nm at 2,000rpm. All 308 GT cars have a 6-speed transmission. The ‘EAT6’ is an abbreviation for ‘Efficient Automatic Transmission’ 6speed. The Peugeot 308 GT is now available to order with deliveries commencing from March 2015.

Acura takes the wraps off its highly anticipated nextgeneration NSX supercar
Rebirth of an icon Twenty-five years after the debut of the original, paradigm-shifting NSX supercar, Acura revealed the production version of its highly anticipated successor - the nextgeneration Acura NSX. Developed and produced in the U.S.A., the production model, in a scintillating NSX Red finish, took the stage with a growl from its twinturbocharged engine at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. The next generation NSX showcases the production styling, design and specifications of Acura’s mid-engine sports hybrid supercar, and Acura announced key details of the all-new vehicle’s design and performance. Specifically created to bring a “new sports experience the approach is realized through an all-new power unit—a twin-turbocharged 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) and threeelectric motor Sport Hybrid system. Developed under the concept of a “human-centered supercar,” a car that
puts the driver first in every aspect of its design, the next-generation NSX will leverage its state-of-the-art hybrid supercar power unit, body and chassis to deliver exceptionally intuitive and immediate response to driver inputs. The development of nextgeneration NSX, driven by precision crafted performance, has resulted in a clean-sheet design, which involved nearly three years of intensive development effort by a global design and engineering team led by engineers at the company’s development center in Raymond, Ohio. The NSX body features classic low and wide proportions married to modern and alluring surfacing, an aggressive front design, and tail lights that pays homage to the original NSX. The signature side intake and floating C-pillar collects air to feed the midmounted engine and directs airflow over the rear deck to increase downforce. To accommodate the new longitudinally mounted twin-turbo V6
25 years after its debut Acura reveals the next generation of the NSX
and 9-speed DCT, the production vehicle was lengthened (+3 inches) and widened (+1 inch) with a slightly more cab-forward package, compared with the proportions of the NSX Concept shown in 2012. The NSX has undergone extensive testing at the company’s state-of-theart wind tunnel in Raymond, Ohio, leading to a number of significant changes from concept to final body design, including modified hood vents, new front fender vents, modified side air intakes, and an optimized deck spoiler. At the heart of the NSX’s performance capabilities is an all-new mid-mounted, 75-degree, DOHC V6 engine with twin turbochargers mated to an Acura-developed 9-speed DCT. The V6 engine employs a raceinspired compact valve train and dry sump lubrication system to help lower the center of gravity. The all-new 9speed DCT delivers synapse-quick gear changes and rev-matching downshifts. The rear direct-drive electric motor, housed between the engine and transmission, supports acceleration, braking and transmission shifting performance. The NSX’s front wheels are driven by twin independent highoutput electric motors which deliver instantaneous torque response and dynamic left-to-right torque distribution. The NSX uses its front electric motors for dynamic torque vectoring in addition to enhancing acceleration and braking performance. The result is an instantaneous “zero delay” launch performance and handling response that seems to anticipate the driver’s desire. The NSX has undergone extensive testing at some of the world’s most challenging race circuits, including the famed Nurburgring. The company will begin accepting custom orders for the new NSX starting in the summer, with customer deliveries expected later in the year.

Brilliant Bantams! QUALIFIED: Bradford City are the first team to ever defeat a Jose Mourinho side from two goals down as they advanced in the FA Cup
Historic cup triumph sends City through to fifth round After a weekend of unforgettable football, which saw the Premier League’s ‘big hitters’ fall in every direction, it was Bradford City who pulled off one of the greatest cup upsets of all time, defeating Chelsea 4-2at Stamford Bridge. Goals from Jon Stead, former Chelsea player Filipe Morais, Andy Halliday and Mark Yeates, secured the famous win for the Bantams who saw their name placed in the hat for the fifth round draw. Being touted as huge underdogs leading into the game, City held on for 21 minutes before Gary Cahill opened the scoring for the hosts with a finish at the near post. The lead was soon doubled after a fine passing move, saw Mohammed Salah link up with Ramires to set up the Brazilian for a cool finish. With City’s 6,000 travelling supporters still loud in voice, Stead gave the visitors a lifeline in first half stoppage time when he rifled in
an effort from 18 yards to beat Petr Cech at his front post. With only one goal separating the sides, Bradford pressed in the second half and levelled with 15 minutes to play as Morais tapped in to score against his former employers. Having claimed victories over Premier League opponents, such as Arsenal and Aston Villa, in a remarkable League Cup run two years ago, a sense of optimism was sweeping around Stamford Bridge as the game edged to a finish. Step forward Halliday to put the huge outsiders ahead with a fine placed effort and in turn, send the jubilant away supporters into pandemonium. As if this wasn’t enough, a stoppage time goal to seal the game arrived from the boot of Yeates after great play from Stead, to secure a historic victory and classic FA Cup triumph.
MAGIC: City boss, Phil Parkinson, said the It is the first time in game will live long in the memory of fans Jose Mourinho’s across the country managerial history that he has thrown away a two goal lead to lose a match against any opponent. After the game, he shook the hand of every Bradford player in their dressing room and commenting on his team’s performeance said he was ‘ashamed’ and ‘embarrased’ about their cup exit. He added: “It's a disgrace for a big team to lose to a small team from a lower league. Me and the players must feel ashamed...Frustration is not the right word, embarrassed would be more appropriate.” Meanwhile, an ecstatic Bantams Boss Phil Parkinson, told BBC Radio 5 live: “The lads are
absolutely bouncing in that dressing room and what they've done today will be remembered for a very long time - not just in Bradford but all around the country. “Playing the league leaders and one of the best teams in Europe and scoring four goals... That's going to take some beating.” Elsewhere in the cup competition, a shock was seen at the Etihad Stadium where Premier League champions, Manchester City, were eliminated by Championship side Middlesbrough. A 2-0 scoreline secured the visitors entry into the fifth round and knocked one of the favourites out. Meanwhile, other Premier League teams eliminated include: Southampton, Tottenham and Swansea.

Kickboxing Queens
A BOXERS FALL FROM GRACE – JERMAIN TAYLOR By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
The life of a boxer is not an easy one and only a handful of boxers actually make any significant money or gain popularity from this brutal sport. Boxing often can leave competitive boxers with physical and mental health issues long after they have retired from the sport due to the constant heavy punching endured in the boxing ring. A boxer needs to develop physical and the mental qualities to make him a success and must withstand the pain and fatigue that he suffers during training and then in the boxing ring. One such boxer who did make it in the sport of boxing was Jermain “Bad intentions” Taylor who fought some of the best boxers in the world and managed to beat them. Taylor was once considered the most talented boxers of our generation. As an amateur Taylor held numerous boxing titles and achieved a bronze medal in the Sydney Olympics at the age of 21 years old. Taylor was often referred as “the American boxing star with a fighting attitude that welcomed big fights.” Taylor managed to gain impressive wins against hall of fame boxers like Bernard Hopkins, Winky Wright, Felix Trinidad, Shane Mosley and Cory Spinks. Taylor fought the best without hesitation and received heavy punching blows in the process
Khalil Alam
eventually starting to lose fights by being knockout and then after a long absence from the ring he fought Arthur Abraham suffering a loss and a severe concussion and bleeding on the brain. This is when the significant problems started in Taylor’s life with many observers and doctors commenting that Taylor was suffering from long term damage to his brain known as “Traumatic Brain Injury.” However despite Taylor posting erratic videos on the social media and being charged with two felonies after shooting his cousin in the leg, Taylor managed to pass his boxing medical test and obtain a licence to continue his boxing career. On 9th October 2014 Taylor managed to do what most critics were calling “mission impossible” and managed to capture the IBF Middleweight title with a convincing win against the champion Sam Soliman. Taylor had defied the odds and won a world middleweight title again and finally things started to look more promising for the American. Taylor the boxing champion was due to defend his IBF title in a couple of months, but has again been involved in an incident where he has allegedly pointed a gun at a man’s head and threated to shoot three small children at an Arkansas parade. On 21st January 2015 it has been reported that Taylor has now been booked back into jail after the judge has revoked his bond due to the previous firearms case. Taylor is now certain to be remanded and receive a lengthy jail sentence. The Taylor story represents how easy it is to fall from grace and at one time he had boxing status, respect and prestige, but now will probably not be able to fight as a professional boxer ever again.
Sporting Siblings clean up at local tournament The ‘fighting spirit’ of two sisters from Bradford shone through earlier this month as they both picked up medals at an annual kickboxing competition. Kisa and Nida Hamdani, who both attend Bradford Girls Grammar School, were successful in their categories during the highly anticipated ‘Fightnight’ competition. Organised by the Fusion Martials Arts club and staged at their centre in the city, Year 8 pupil, Kisa, clinched awards in both continuous fighting and points sparring heats. Finishing second overall in her age category, the young sporting enthusiast was awarded a silver medal to round off a memorable performance. Younger sister, Nidah, also
found success in her points sparring heat, finishing in first place for her age category and taking home the much decorated trophy. The Year 4 pupil is following in her sister’s footsteps in the sport and showed that kickboxing certainly runs in the family with her convincing display. Both girls have been attending twice-weekly classes at The Kickboxing Fusion Centre for the past two years and have now progressed to their purple and white belt grading respectively. With further trophies and belts up for grabs this year, the sporting siblings will be looking to add to their recent trophy haul over the next 12 months.

highest level. 21-year-old Ashfaq clinched Silver at his Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow, whilst also picking up gold at the ABA’s for a second time. He is joined in the category by Jawad, who also registered a stellar year, picking up a Bronze in Glasgow, and breaking World Records. Nitin Ganatra opened the voting for the awards on Monday 26th January, with the final ceremony set to take place at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena on 21st February. Speaking about the awards, he said: “It gives me great pleasure to open the voting for the first ever black and minority ethnic sports awards, known as the Lycamobile British Ethnic Diversity Sports Awards or BEDSAs. “Sport plays an incredibly important part in our national life and I was honoured when the BEDSA organisers approached me to host the awards. “There are 10 categories in the awards from Young Sports Person of the Year to Lifetime Achievement and we would welcome votes in each of them. “So please go to www.bedsa.co.uk to find out more about each nominee.” Other notable local nominees include Nicola Adams, nominated for Sportswoman of the Year, and Huddersfield Town manager, Chris Powell, in the Coach of the Year category.
Continued from page 92 Stage two, on Saturday 2nd May, will be one for the sprinters, starting at the imposing Selby Abbey before concluding with a circuit of York, the city which of course witnessed amazing scenes when the Tour de France arrived last year. Finally, riders will give their all to finish the final leg, from Wakefield to Leeds, and are set to complete part of the Tour de France route in reverse when they arrive in Holmfirth. The longest continual descent of the tour will be at the iconic Cragg Vale, before cyclists pass the finish line in what is expected to be a packed-out Roundhay Park. Tour de Yorkshire is being organised by Welcome to Yorkshire and Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), with support from British Cycling and local authorities throughout the county. Christian Prudhomme, Director of the Tour de France at A.S.O, said: “After the grandest of Grand Départs of the Tour de France, we were keen to return to
Yorkshire. “With its stunning landscapes, iconic cities and tough climbs, Yorkshire offers all the ingredients needed for a great cycling race. “The welcome we received in Yorkshire in July 2014 was simply spectacular and I am very much looking forward to returning there in May for the Tour de Yorkshire.” The Tour de Yorkshire will be an annual event and the organisers hope it will grow year on year to be one of the biggest events in the cycling calendar and position Yorkshire as the heartland of cycling in Europe. Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, added: “Before the Grand Départ had even finished people all across Yorkshire were asking when we can have more cycling. “The Tour de Yorkshire will bring back many of the world’s top cycling teams and there will be an opportunity for ordinary people to ride the same roads on the same day in the sportive. “And this is a free event to watch so there is an opportunity for everyone in the county to be part of Tour de Yorkshire in one way or another.”

After an incredible start to last year’s Tour de France, it was only a matter of time until Yorkshire firmly printed itself on the cycling map. And now, following the announcement of the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire route last week, it seems the time is drawing ever closer for the county to live up to its growing reputation. Team Sky pro-rider, Ben Swift, was joined last week by fellow Yorkshireman Brian Robinson – the first Brit to win a stage of the Tour de France, to unveil the official route which will begin in Bridlington on Friday 1st May,
ending in Leeds two days later. The highly anticipated announcement was welcomed by cycling enthusiasts across the world who have been forced to wait following the declaration of host cities and towns last year. Stage one will take in much of the Yorkshire coastline as well as the iconic North York Moors, before finishing on the Scarborough seafront, 174km down the line. The last section of the first day will be particularly tough on the riders, who will be climbing out of Robin Hood’s Bay, which poses a 1.5km long challenge with an average gradient of 10.3 per cent.
