Mosque invaders say they ‘don’t hate Muslims’

‘Porsche Ferrari’ There’s no mystery about what this track is about… yes… it’s about a lad and his cars and his delight in having girls chase him for the horsepower under his bonnet (so to speak). I’m sure most of the lads across Yorkshire will relate to this chap.

A group of uniformed far-right activists who visited ten mosques across Bradford, carrying out a ‘Christian Crusade’ and handing out Army Bibles to Imams, have said that they are not against Muslims.

The representatives of Britain First were dressed in matching flatcaps and green jackets embossed with the party logo stating: “Taking our country back”. They had filmed themselves randomly addressing people about ‘Muslim grooming gangs’ and had even told one Muslim man to “reject the false prophet Mohammed and read the Bible.”

Led by Paul Golding, a former BNP councillor, during their unprovoked visit to Bradford, they also turned up at the doorstep of Bradford Lord Mayor Khadim Hussain. They demanded to see him on what he was doing to combat child sexual exploitation in the Muslim community. They then accused his daughters of lying when they told the group that he was not home.

Now this week, the actions of the Britain First members have been slammed by Secretary of State for Communities Rt Hon. Eric Pickles MP and MP Stephen Williams the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, who has responsibility for Community Cohesion.

Four generations of one Leeds family are ‘fighting for justice’ after an electrical fault in one of their mobile devices almost had disastrous consequences.

On Sunday 9th March, 30-yearold Roundhay resident, Sanjay Thukral, awoke in the early hours to the smell of burning electrics.

The father of two had set his alarm on his Samsung S4 to 4.30am, yet when it went off, he was also greeted by the unusual smell.

As he approached the phone to turn off the alarm, Mr Thukral,

who sleeps in the same room as his two infant children, saw that the charger had begun to melt inside the phones charging slot and burn through the plastic case.

After forcing the wire out, burn damage to the phone was evident.

“It was such a shocking, scary thing to see that I didn’t even know what to do at first,” Mr Thukral said.

“I turned the charger off at the mains and then pulled the cable out and could clearly see the damage it had begun to do on the phone.

“Only a couple of weeks ago did we here of the family in Sheffield whose home burned down resulting in three generations losing their lives. This incident was scarily similar and who knows what would have happened had the alarm not gone off.”

The alarm had been set for 4.30am as it is every weekday that Mr Thukral works. He believes that if the incident had of happened over the weekend, the result would have been a lot worse.

He continued: “Thankfully it did still wake me up but the stress it put on me and my wife over the next couple of days was huge.

“We could have been killed.

My grandmother who lives downstairs has a mental disability so helping her get out of the home due to a fire would have been extremely difficult.

the situation and imagining what could have happened. It feels like you just can’t trust technology anymore.

“We now only charge our phones when we are awake and have had to invest in new electrics to hopefully prevent anything like this happening again.”

The Leeds residence, which currently homes eight members from four generations of the same family, aged between one and 71, had no further damage caused to it.

Initially, following the incident, Mr Thukral and his wife, Babita, were offered £32.99 in compensation to replace the damaged phone case yet Mr Thukral argues that this is simply not enough.

“The stress and worry this has put on our family, with no fault of our own, has been huge,” he said.

“We are now talking to solicitors about taking this case further as the compensation we were offered was simply embarrassing to say our house could have burned down.”

Footage of the damage caused to the phone has been uploaded to YouTube and has already received almost 1,000 views.

Mosque invaders say they ‘don’t hate Muslims’ Though Britain First, an off-shoot of BNP, haven’t broken any laws per se, the unprovoked invasion of several mosques by the group has raised questions as to where the law stands on intimidation.

MP David Ward and Zulfi Karim led on the talks concerning what immediate actions could be put in place to help alleviate any community concerns and what steps could be implemented to ensure that all local religious institutions can deal with any future attacks.

The Communities Secretary confirmed that he will be speaking to the Home Secretary to try to ascertain what measures needed to be put in place to ensure that the Police can take effective action in the future to prevent such incidences occurring.

Britain First, speaking to the Asian Express, said that they are fuelled by the breakdown of society and failure of politics in Britain.

“We’re a group of people who abhor the effects of binge drinking, mindless racist actions as well as grooming and FGM,” says the spokesperson James Dowson, also considered the founder of Britian First.

He added: “We believe that even if every single immigrant left this country, this country would still be on it’s knees because of the politicians that have failed us.

“We don’t have anything against the vast majority of law-abiding Muslims but we feel that they are not addressing issues such as grooming which is led by Asian gangs.

“Let me put it this way, I’d prefer a devout Muslim attending his mosque rather than someone hanging around drinking cans of larger like an EDL member.”

Asked on any further plans to target mosques in other cities, he said: “No, but in hindsight, perhaps we should not have tried to get our message across in this manner. But we are working on opening up an educated dialogue with people.”

manner. Local people continue to have a big role to play and we ask that whatever is happening, they allow the police and our partners to manage it with the resources at our disposal.

Noise complaint silenced

Council officers accompanied by the Police have confiscated audio equipment from a house in Batley this week after the owner refused to comply with a noise abatement notice.

Two televisions, a stereo, radio cassette player, DVDs and CDs were confiscated from a property in Healey Lane, Batley.

www.asianexpress.co.uk The owner had been issued with a noise abatement notice in April following numerous complaints from neighbours about heavy beat dance music being played so loud that it could be heard clearly on the street.

However, music had continued at unacceptably loud levels throughout April, causing considerable distress to neighbours nearby. On one occasion officers were present when the music was so loud that next door neighbours were unable to sleep.

Local students calculate their way to success

A Year 11 student from Leeds has been named in the top 40 mathematicians in the country for his age, following his performance at a recent national competition.

Arvind Narayan, from the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), entered the Intermediate Mathematics Challenge which sees 200,000 students nationwide compete, with the top 500 in each school year progressing to the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad.

At GSAL, seven students were selected to sit the paper for the Olympiad and Arvind produced the standout performance.

The teenager achieved a distinction, a gold medal, and an invitation to the National Mathematics Summer School, an honour reserved for the best 40 scorers in the whole country.

At the week-long summer school, the academic programme is

designed to stimulate and inspire these promising young mathematicians, with whole group masterclasses, small group work and team competitions, as well as time set aside in the evenings for extracurricular activities.

Maths teacher Alison Jackson coordinates the competition at GSAL and said she was proud to see the school’s pupils achieve so highly.

“I was delighted with our students’ results in the maths challenge, with seven progressing to the Olympiad; this in itself is a huge success story,” she said. “Arvind’s distinction is a superb achievement and he has done exceptionally well to gain an invitation to the summer school.”

A number of other GSAL students also did themselves proud in the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad with three Year 11 students - Kaiser Lodhi, Aditya Munot and Miheer Sonwalkar – achieving merit certificates, alongside two Year 9 pupils - Ciaran Duggan and Eric Rodriguez Boidi.

New boss for Bradford Teaching Hospitals Lord Kamlesh Patel set to fill vacant Chairman role Teaching Bradford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust named their new chairman earlier this week as Professor Lord Patel of Bradford OBE took over the reins at the city’s trust.

Lord Patel is a social worker by background and moved into academia establishing the Centre for Ethnicity and Health at the University of Central Lancashire and specialising in research connected to the reduction of health inequalities.

Alongside this work he has held a number of public appointments including Chairman of the Mental Health Act Commission, National Strategic Director with the Department of Health (Race Equality and Mental Health), a

non-executive director of a number of public bodies in the areas of substance misuse, mental health and social work, including the Care Quality Commission.

He entered the House of Lords in 2006 as an independent peer and was later appointed as a Minister in the Governments Whips Office in the House of Lords.

Lord Patel Chaired the National Prison Drug Treatment Strategy Review Group which resulted in the publication of The Patel Report and subsequent policy changes in the delivery of prison drug treatment.

In addition to his duties as a member of the House of Lords, Lord Patel is currently Senior Advisor to the Vice Chancellor of the University of East London, Vice-President and Professorial Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health and Institute of Healthcare Management, Professorial Fellow of the Institute of Mental health and patron of a

number of charities based both in Bradford and nationally.

Bryan Millar, Chief Executive of the Trust, said: “We are delighted to welcome Kamlesh to the Foundation Trust, his wealth of experience and insight will help us to successfully meet future challenges for the benefit of Bradford.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank David for his enormous commitment over the years and the legacy he will be leaving behind as the outgoing chair."

For the past number of weeks, halal has been top of the menu for different media across the country yet why has it suddenly become such an issue despite being prevalent for hundreds of years?

Every other season, a new antiIslamic debate seems to arise and, whether it be in relation to the hijab or grooming gangs, the finger is often pointed towards Muslims by members of society.

The latest epidemic seems to revolve around the method of slaughter, known as ‘halal’, which many far-right supporters have backed a ban on.

Currently, the Halal Food Authority (HFA) estimate that just 15 per cent of meat slaughtered in Britain is halal compliant to adhere to the needs of the 2.4million Muslims currently living in the UK. For meat to be constituted as

Being a Muslim I obviously think it’s important to have it stated on a menu whether something is halal or not. For the rest of community or religions, it doesn’t matter if it is halal or not in that respect.

If somebody doesn’t want to eat halal because of their own personal reasons, such as the way it is killed, then they shouldn’t have to, it’s visa-versa really. It’s the same rules for everyone; we should all have the choice of halal or non-halal.

The thing is now, we live in such a big market where food is concerned that it has to be specified where halal is concerned.

There shouldn’t really be an argument because Russell Brand said ‘you’re killing the animal either way and when something dies it is suffering so it is just a formality’.

Despite causing a media storm over recent weeks, it seems that campaigners against the meat are still in the minority.

In Wakefield, West Yorkshire, we went into three butchers, with only one employee at an unnamed premise, saying that people had specifically asked not to be served halal meat.

In the city’s Hoffman and Son’s, butcher, Andrew Brook, said he had not noticed any change in the number of customers speaking about halal.

If I don’t see it then I don’t really think about it in that sense so I would happily eat either.

I don’t see where the debate comes from in regard to halal. To me if it is meat, it is meat. Halal meat and normal meat doesn’t taste any different so I don’t see any point in arguing about it, it’s just ridiculous.

The animal is being killed anyway, so if somebody is saying a prayer over it, why would it bother me.

It’s not going to affect the taste, texture or quality, it’s just meat.

#BRINGBACKOURGIRLS Nigerian community and campaigners unite in Leeds to call for safety of kidnapped Nigerian girls

Tens of protestors gathered in Leeds city centre earlier this week as calls to ‘Bring back our girls’ were heard from the city’s ‘frustrated’ Nigerian community.

A large protest, organised by the Leeds Nigerian Community, Angel of Youths and Leeds No Borders, was staged outside the Leeds Art Gallery, on The Headrow, on Monday 12th May. More than 30 days have now passed since the group of over 200 Nigerian schoolgirls were kidnapped from a school in the village of Chibok, Nigeria, by the terrorist organisation, Boko Haram.

The location of the girls still remains a mystery, with military forces from the US, France, UK, Israel and Canada all now joining the Nigerian troops in the search for the children.

Leeds’ Nigerian community held the demonstration to show their support to the ‘Bring back our girls’ campaign and call o the Nigerian government to find the girls as soon as possible.

Marvina Babs-Apata, project manager at Angel of Youths, had

to fight tears as she spoke passionately about her close ties with her home nation and the anger she has, seeing schoolgirls treated in such a way.

She said: “Women are not a bargaining chip and they shouldn’t be used as a pawn in the political anguish of some terrorists in anyway.

“I have a daughter and a son and just thinking that someone could take my kids because I send them to school is unacceptable. We have a lot of support and I’m just speechless in the way that we don’t appreciate what we have in this country.

“We can send our children to school and they can achieve whatever they want but back home, it’s like a fight to just send your children to get a higher education.

“We just want the opportunity to let Leeds know the pain that we as Nigerians are going through.”

Marvina was just one of the many campaigners who had ties with the African country and a ‘personal connection’.

Bragging number plate gets owner nicked

A man who shamelessly drove his £55,000 car bearing a bragging registration plate, unwittingly led police to his multi-million pound car theft racket in Birmingham.

30-year-old Shanwaz Khan – the mastermind of the gang, brazenly drove his blue Audi RS4 with his ‘S20LUN’ personalised number plate, but his flashing around only succeeded in getting him noticed by police who decided to track his car and found it among a convoy of stolen Mercedes in March 2012.

Detectives launched a six-month investigation into his dealings and found he was behind a ring that stole cars to order before shipping parts abroad.

On October 15, 2012 officers raided his home and lock-ups across Birmingham and found an 'Aladdin's cave' of chopped up car parts stolen from across the city.

A court heard in total police linked Khan to more than 80 vehicle thefts and violent carjackings during 2012 - valued at £1.1 million.

Khan admitted conspiracy to commit burglary and handle stolen goods and at Birmingham Crown Court and was jailed for seven years.

Along with his brother Wajid Khan (24) cousin Seyed Khan (32) and fellow conspirators Ross and Matthew Dunham the gang stole vehicles from driveways and car-

jacked other victims.

A court heard upwards of 3,000 parts stripped from the cars were sold on to unwitting internet buyers via an eBay account operated by the Khans.

Wajid Khan and Seyed Khan, both from Birmingham, admitted conspiracy to handle stolen goods and were both sentenced to 30 months behind bars.

Ross, 21, and Matthew Dunham, 24, from Coventry, West Mids, were jailed for five years and 39 months respectively.

After the case Detective Constable Mo Azir, from West Midlands Police said: “We meticulously pieced together their network of premises and, when officers raided one unit in Aston, we found an Aladdin’s cave of stolen cars and parts.

“Many of these were high-value luxury cars that had been brutishly

’chopped’ up, whilst another premises in the city centre was used exclusively to store engines ripped from the stolen cars.

“The scale of their criminal operation was vast and they showed a complete disregard to the trail of destruction and misery left behind to victims of these offences.”

The gang were linked to 82 vehicle thefts during 2012 all but 17 in the West Midlands with Audis and BMWs their favoured vehicles.

They included a petrol station car-jacking at a Total garage when a man was dragged from behind the wheel of his £25,000 Ford Focus ST. And in the early hours of April 27th they stole two Mercedes CClass from a driveway in having grabbed keys during a break-in.

Late on June 11th they drove off in a Seat Leon from outside a house in Coventry’s Standard Avenue.

However, the owner spotted her

car being driven around Coventry on false plates the next day and later picked Matthew Dunham out as the driver during an ID procedure.

The court heard Shanwaz Khan was responsible for stripping down cars and storing parts at industrial units across the West Midlands.

He also rented space at City Self Storage, in Digbeth, Birmingham, to stash stolen engines before shipping many of them abroad.

Det Con Azir added: “The premises were leased by the Khans using false names and documentation of the cars were stolen to order for engines which the Khans shipped out to the continent.

“All five are subject of on-going Proceeds of Crime Act investigations and we’ll look to seize any assets obtained through criminal activities.”

Local councils are supporting organisations across the West Yorkshire county to become Dementia Friendly.

As a part of the national Public Health England Dementia Friends campaign and the Dementia Friendly Communities programme, Wakefield Council is inviting residents to learn more about this condition.

The psychological approach

A key member of England’s backroom staff at the upcoming football World Cup has shared his approach and expertise with local education leaders.

Dr Steve Peters is one of the country’s top psychologists and, as well as being added to the England set-up by national boss Roy Hodgson, he has previously worked with a roll-call of major sports stars.

Dr Peters had a huge influence on Olympic gold medal-winning cyclists Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton, he has supported UK Athletics, counts snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan among his clients and also works with Premier League football giants Liverpool.

Fighting homophobia

Saturday 17th May is International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) and for the first time ever, Calderdale Council is flying the rainbow flag at Halifax Town Hall in a show of support.

This visible and colourful support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) communities emphasises the Council’s commitment to equality, in recognition of IDAHO. On 4th June 2003 in Quebec, a day was set aside to fight and challenge homophobia. It was decided that this event would be repeated every year on 17th May and would be known as IDAHO day.

This date was chosen as it was the anniversary of the World Health Organisation removing homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses in 1991.

Couple’s wedding warning ‘We don’t want anybody to experience the service that we have had’

It was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives, yet a couple’s wedding plans were soon sent into disarray after a fallout with their photographer led to court appearances and no footage from their big day.

Now, Vipul Ladwa and his wife, Jaspreet Kaur Ladwa, are warning other couple’s to beware when booking photographers as wedding season approaches once again.

“Nobody should be put through the ordeal we have been through at that time in their lives,” Mrs Ladwa said.

“We have no professional photos or footage from our civil ceremony and hopefully by telling others our story, it won’t happen again.”

The West-Midlands couple, both 27-years-old, were married more than two years ago yet have been caught up in a legal battle since then, trying to retrieve photos and video from their special day.

After booking a local photographer to capture the most important moments from their civil ceremony, and the Indian wedding which followed a few weeks later, Mr and Mrs Ladwa say they were extremely happy.

The owner of the company, who cannot be named, had done the photography of Jaspreet’s parents around 30 years ago and so they were convinced that the right choice had been made.

“Ever since I was a little girl I had always wanted them to do my wedding photos,” Mrs Ladwa said.

“It had such a sentimental feel to it and he was so nice at the start that everything just seemed so right.

“We agreed a verbal contract right there and then and he said we didn’t even have to sign anything which was another bonus.”

Yet, as the couple began to plan their wedding’s finer details, they allege that the professionalism of their chosen photographer began to deteriorate.

Terms of the contract were supposedly changed from initial proposals, reducing the number of photos and length of video available, yet both parties remained happy with the outcome.

when talking to a family friend also taking photos.

She said: “He was very aggressive towards one of our family friends who was taking pictures on the day.

“He seemed to think that we would be going over the limit of photos and that is why our friend was doing pictures but they wouldn’t have been anywhere near the quality of a professional.

“Five days after the ceremony we went down to the business to select the 150 photos we wanted for our album from more than 1,000 taken on the day.

“It took us more than half a day to do it but we were happy enough to do so, and got told they would be ready in four to six weeks.”

Two weeks before the next event, the Indian wedding, Mrs Ladwa states that she received a phone call from the photographer ‘demanding money’ and said she was told she would have to select her photos again.

After doing so, the West Midlands resident says she then began to get stressed about the wedding day.

“It was just a distraction we did not need at that time,” she said.

“A couple of days later he phoned again to demand the money. He shouted down the phone at my mother and hung up on her, then wouldn’t answer any of our calls.

“It was all so upsetting that I didn’t feel I could see him on my wedding day so we asked him to cancel the photography for the Indian wedding and we would just pay him for the civil ceremony footage, which must have been 90 per cent complete by that stage.”

The couple booked a separate photographer for the Indian wedding yet explained how further problems developed shortly after.

Mrs Ladwa added: “A fortnight after our Indian wedding, we were told that our [initial photographer] was attempting to sue us for 75per cent of a cancellation fee as well as the full cost of the Indian wedding photo-shoot.

“We were taken to court where he was told he had no claim and was forced to pay our court fees and give our deposit back.

“We still offered to pay him the full amount for the photos and video which he had captured from our ceremony but he still won’t do it.”

Vipul and Jaspreet do have photos and video from their Indian wedding, which they say they now ‘cherish even more’, and hope to one day be reunited with their civil ceremony footage.

New look neighbourhood police Emirates police fly over to West Yorkshire Communities across West Yorkshire may be spotting some new faces policing their neighbourhoods this week, as a group of special officers have flown in from thousands of miles away.

Thirteen police officers from the United Arab Emirates arrived in the county earlier this week as part of continued collaboration with West Yorkshire Police and the development of proposals for volunteering.

The officers from Abu Dhabi, will accompany the Neighbourhood Policing Teams and specialist departments around the county after being given an overview of the work of West Yorkshire Police.

Mark Gilmore, Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, said the county’s target had always been to deliver a ‘world class’ policing service and looked forward to working with similar minded officers from around the world.

He said: “The United Arab Emirates also have an ambition to be a world leader and Abu Dhabi Police are keen to learn about the British model of Policing.

“This visit presents a real opportunity for both services to learn from each other and help us

Sir Ronnie Flanagan, Policing and Security Adviser to Abu Dhabi Police, backed up the point by adding: “We are now actively exploring future collaboration opportunities and the Abu Dhabi Police Service is very excited about the possibility of its officers becoming actively involved in the West Yorkshire Police volunteers scheme.

“I believe both police services can mutually benefit the communities they serve, as a result of this collaboration.”

Last year Sir Ronnie Flanagan visited West Yorkshire Police and met with the Chief Constable to explore how the two services could work collaboratively together to learn from each other and ensure they deliver the best possible policing service to their respective communities.

Celebrity support for exam time

‘Highlight everything’, ‘ask for help and take ownership’ and ‘take little breaks’ were the wise words from some of the stars of sport and music who have given their time to offer words of wisdom and support to Leeds pupils taking exams this summer.

Throughout the year, sporting heroes, pop stars and TV presenters have been passing on their support to the thousands of Leeds pupils who are taking exams this year, by taking part in a motivational film for Child Friendly Leeds.

Numerous sporting stars who attended the ‘Sports Personality of the Year Awards’ when it was held in Leeds last December, agreed to send exam advice and good luck messages to Leeds pupils.

Amir Kahn offered some knock-out advice by telling pupils to “Work hard – this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so make the most of it.”

With good luck messages also coming from Australian Grand Prix driver Mark Weber, Olympic and Paralympic stars, including Ben Anslie, Hannah Cockcroft, Chris Hoy and Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson, as well as local heroes Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Ryan Hall.

Pop group Neon Jungle reminded students to go to bed early the night before the exam and revise hard, with pop star Olly Murs suggesting doing extra reading will also help achieve success.

Also offering their words of wisdom from the pop world were Dizzee Rascal, Diana Vickers and Yorkshire’s own John Newman.

CBBC presenter Katie Thisleton offered some unusual advice to help students remember tricky facts – to sing them to

the tune of their favourite song.

Councillor Judith Blake, executive board member responsible for children’s services said: “It is fantastic that so many nationally and internationally renowned sportspeople, pop stars and TV personalities have taken the time out of their busy schedules to record these messages of support and good wishes to young people taking their exams.

“We all know how important it is to give all our children and young people the encouragement and inspiration to be a success.

This film shows them that we are all behind them and believe they can do well.

“Child Friendly Leeds is about putting young people at the heart of everything we do. By recognising that exams are one of the most challenging times in a young person’s life and giving them encouragement to try their best will hopefully give everyone a real boost.”

The motivational film will be shown on the big screen in Millennium Square from next week, and will also be shown at schools across the city, as well as being shown at Miley Cyrus show at the First Direct arena tomorrow.

Leeds City Council has also arranged for a number of ‘good luck’ banners to be displayed throughout the city – within the city centre and outside schools, to remind the young people of Leeds how much support they have.

SOCIETAL CRISIS: “We need to learn from Asian and Black Communities on looking after the elderly” says MP DEDICATED: Abdul is driven by a religious ethos to look after his parents in their old age

An MP has raised eyebrows, commenting on the endemic problem of isolation of elderly people by citing Black and Asian people as role models and their family structures in looking after their elderly.

Discussing how people could play a role in looking after an ageing population MP Simon Hughes said: “We need to learn from the Asian and African communities who understood the importance of ‘sacrifices’ and a responsibility to ‘look after your family to the end,’ he said.

He added that Britain had lost a sense of ‘obligation’ to care for loved ones.

The comments come in light of damning figures, which paint a bleak picture of how elderly people in modern Britain are being neglected, sidelined and their existence simply forgotten.

Asian communities have been

unique in their ways in managing families, especially the elderly.

However, Abdul Aziiz, a 36-year-old Teacher from Oldham, whose parents are in need of care, believes that this is changing too.

“I visit my mother every other day.

She is in her sixties is diabetic and requires assistance. All my brothers and sisters meet together as a family every Sunday and sometimes Wednesdays to help out.” said Abdul “When I started earning I would contribute to the family. When I did not work, my family supported me, both emotionally and financially. I feel responsible for ensuring that my parents are looked after well.”

High rates of unemployment have meant that people are venturing outside of their localities to find work. In some cases, having to move to completely new areas in the country, in the process redefining the traditional set up where parents had their siblings accessible for their needs.

“Times have changed. There are still traditions, which play a role in certain homes. But some are leaving the tradition of sticking together,” highlights Abdul.

values don’t place a similar emphasis of looking after the elderly.

“With some people the idea that children should be independent and find their olives outside of the parental home bites back in later life. Their children’s independence costs them dearly” comments Abdul.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt also echoed comments similar to those of MP Simon Hughes last year when he said that he was struck by the ‘reverence and respect’ for older people in Asian cultures and that in those cultures residential care for the elderly is a last rather than a first option.

And the social contract is stronger because as children see how their own grandparents are looked after, they develop higher expectations of how they too will be treated when they get old.

People voting by post in Leeds are being reminded to return their completed ballot forms in plenty of time to help the city’s elections team deal with what is the largest postal vote in the country.

Around 93,000 people are registered in the city to return their votes in the post for the Leeds City Council and European elections being held on Thursday 22nd May. Postal ballot packs started arriving in households across the city this week.

Susanna Benton, electoral services manager for Leeds City Council, said: “Our staff deal with the UK’s largest number of postal votes and it requires a lot of care and attention to make sure that everything is in order in time for the counts.

“It would really help us if voters returned their forms quickly so we can begin that task, rather than waiting till close to polling day itself.

“If you haven’t received your ballot pack yet, don’t worry- the delivery is so large it happens in phases in the run-up to polling day.”

More than 500 Muslim men paraded through the streets of Bradford last weekend as they spread the message of ‘love, peace and harmony’.

The 15th annual Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA) parade was a huge success for all attendants as people marched through Manningham to honour a number of major occasions.

The event celebrated the birth of the holy prophet Muhammad, the fourth anniversary of NADA’s Jamia Masjid Naqshbandia Aslamia Islamic Centre, and the founder of NADA, Hazrat Khwaja Shaykh Sufi Mohammed Aslam, who sadly passed away in February 2013.

In addition the aim of the event was to promote community cohesion by showing that Islamic values and principles are compatible with modern contemporary Britain.

Following the procession, more than one thousand Muslims, gathered at a marquee outside the mosque to partake in a spiritual meditation programme, whilst a similar event was attended by 500 women in the Girlington Community Centre.

scholars in both Urdu and English, whilst the recitation of nasheeds and food was also presented.

The event finished with a food delivery service whereby members of NADA handed out free curry to local residents on Tile Street and Holker Street.

Nazim Ali, general secretary for NADA, explained why it was so important to engage with the wider community during the group’s celebrations.

“At the culmination of the event as per is our tradition for the last three years we went out and gave free food to the local residents,” he said.

“Many are of Eastern European origin, which was not only a gesture of goodwill on our part, but also demonstrates that our event was not only for Muslims but for the whole community and we wanted to express this.

“Hence, the celebration not only touches Muslims but the wider community.”

The event was organised by the late Shaykh’s son, Hazrat Sahibzada Sufi Amjad Aslam, with people travelling from all over the country to take part in the processions.

Nazim added that the parade held significant meaning for the NADA representatives, as it helped spread their core messages to the wider community.

“NADA has organised this highly successful annual parade for the last 15 years to spread the message of peace, love and harmony; hence, celebrate diversity and actively promote tolerance,” he said.

“NADA are a progressive, solutions-based community organisation and a registered charity and this event is in line with the ethos of NADA which is ‘getting to the heart of issues’.

“I profoundly feel that these great events held by NADA were an opportunity to showcase, to external visitors from other cities, the positive work that is happening in Bradford in relation to community relations.”

Depression top cause of illness in teens Depression is the top global cause of illness and disability for adolescents, with suicide the third-biggest cause of death, the World Health Organisation said this week.

The finding is in a new report by the UN agency, which has pulled together a wealth of published evidence with direct consultations with 10 to 19-year-olds around the world to assess the health issues that affect them.

"The world has not paid enough attention to the health of adolescents," says Flavia Bustreo, head of the WHO's family, women and children's health division.

Some studies show that half of all people who develop mental disorders have their first symptoms by the age of 14, said the report.

"If adolescents with mental health problems get the care they need, this can prevent deaths and avoid suffering throughout life," it said.

The study looked at a broad range of issues, including tobacco, alcohol and drug use, HIV, injuries, mental health, nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, and violence.

Traffic injuries were the number two cause of illness and disability, behind depression, with boys three times more likely to die than girls.

WHO said it was crucial for countries to reduce the risk by increasing access to reliable and safe public transport, improve road safety regulations such as alcohol and speed limits, establish safe pedestrian areas around schools and graduated licensing schemes where drivers' privileges are phased in over time.

Worldwide, an estimated 1.3 million adolescents died in 2012, it said. The top three causes of death globally were road traffic injuries, HIV/AIDS, and suicide.

HIV was the second cause of deaths in adolescents globally, WHO said, with estimates suggesting the number of HIVrelated deaths among adolescents was rising.

This was predominantly in Africa, at a time when HIV-related deaths were decreasing in all other population groups.

"We must not let up on efforts to promote and safeguard the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents, including HIV," said WHO scientist Jane Ferguson, lead author of the report.

For adolescent girls alone, the secondbiggest killer after suicide was complications during childbirth.

That was despite major progress on that front, WHO said, with death-rates plummeting since 2000 -- by 57 percent in Asia, 50 percent in the Middle East and 37 percent in Africa.

Other infectious disease also remained major killers, despite marked successes such as a 90-percent decline in death and disability from measles in Africa over the past decade, thanks to childhood vaccination.

Common infectious diseases that have been a focus for action in young children were among the hardest-hitting.

For example, diarrhoea and lower respiratory tract infections ranked second and fourth among causes of death in 10 to 14-year-olds.

Combined with meningitis, these conditions accounted for 18 percent of all deaths in this age group, little changed from 2000, WHO said.

£513,000 grant for St Luke’s Hospital A ground-breaking scheme, believed to be the first of its kind in the country, to redesign the whole of a hospital’s public area for people with dementia has opened in Bradford this week.

The revolutionary scheme at St Luke’s Hospital was made possible thanks to a £513,000 Department of Health grant.

A major part of the refurbishment involved introducing new signage and art, designed by patients, staff voluntary groups and the public at community events, to support way-finding and encourage orientation for people living with dementia, cognitive impairments or those who have problems communicating. These visual aids help patients to move around the hospital more easily.

Dementia project manager, Dani Woods said: “It’s estimated that 25 per cent of people in hospital have some degree of

dementia and the unfamiliar surroundings and bustle of a busy ward can be very disorientating for them. As a result they can become

Bradford business heads to London Home Farm welcomes latest resident

After an anxious wait and a couple of false alarms, a new foal has finally arrived at a popular Leeds farm.

Maria the donkey gave birth to the as yet unnamed dark chocolate coloured male foal on 5th May, and will join at Home Farm older sister Snowdrop, who was born on Valentine’s Day in 2012.

The new addition is already running around his pen, and throughout May, visitors will be given the chance to suggest a name by filling in a slip at Home Farm’s entrance.

Home Farm boasts over 400 sheep, pigs, poultry and goats, along with an interesting mixture of recreated workshops and exhibitions, and continues to a bit hit with visitors both young and old.

Businessmen speak with Treasury Minister on how to improve the city A group of influential businessmen from Bradford headed down to London earlier this week to share their vision of how to make the city a better place.

Representatives from the Bradford Asian Business Forum, headed by Mr Fazal Hussain MBE, visited the Houses of Parliament on Monday 12th May to meet with Treasury Minister, Nicky Morgan.

Amongst the many topics discussed, one of the most prevalent was the request to help boost the profile of the city.

The forum delegates suggested that by encouraging a greater number of ministerial visits to Bradford, or the

possibility of appointing a dedicated minister to the city, could help lead regeneration and employment for local residents.

The Westfield centre, for example, was hailed by both parties as a big step in the right direction yet more work can still be done to continue the growth of the city.

Mr Hussain MBE and his fellow representatives were keen to seek support from the minister for the development of a complimentary ‘Alternative Retail’ offer around the city which would help Bradford become a distinctive shopping destination able to hold its own in the region.

Much like Leeds’ recent

success with the launch of the Trinity Shopping Centre, the group believe another retail site in Bradford would only help put the city on the map.

Mr. Hussain was also able to draw the Minister’s attention to another pressing issue, through a number of Bradford case studies, where despite the Governments efforts; High Street banks were less than forthcoming with the much needed finances to power the growth and regeneration in the city.

Ms. Morgan said she was ‘delighted’ to meet the group and appreciated their enthusiasm and positivity for Bradford, assuring them of the treasury’s continued support.

A local MP, who served with the RAF in the Middle East, has been showing his support for closer economic and cultural ties between the UK and the region of Kurdistan.

Valley MP Jason Colne McCartney visited the University of Huddersfield last week where he spoke of his belief that such educational institutions have a key role to play in strengthening the UK’s international relationships.

Meeting with students from Kurdistan, currently studying in Huddersfield, he told them about his first visit to Kurdistan in 1992, when he was an RAF officer with the task of helping to enforce the no-fly zone designed to protect the Kurds from aerial attack by the forces of the then Iraqi President,

At that time, a million Kurds had fled to the mountains in search of safety. Now the MP assured his student audience that the only planes in the skies above Kurdistan belonged to friendly forces.

When Mr McCartney became a Conservative MP in 2010, the politician was swift to sign up to the

All-Party Parliamentary Group on Kurdistan.

Last year, alongside members of the group, he returned to the region and was delighted, he told the Huddersfield students, to discover how modern, vibrant and safe it had become.

“I am proud that you are here in this country, studying at the

University of Huddersfield, where there is such a vibrant Kurdish community,” he told his audience.

“You are a credit to where you come from.” The local resident pledged that he would continue to work with Kurdish students in the UK and to foster close ties between the UK and their homeland.

Mr McCartney recently led a

debate in Westminster Hall on the topic of UK-Kurdistan relations. He told MPs that the region had made ‘a remarkable journey from genocide to prosperity’ and urged ministers to be ‘bolder and more positive’ in increasing levels of cooperation.

He described five ways to boost co-operation between Britain and the Kurds.

They included an invitation for the Kurdistan Regional Government’s leaders to pay an official visit to the UK, with a reciprocal visit by the Foreign Secretary.

He also urged the appointment of a UK trade envoy to Kurdistan, where there are great opportunities for British companies, claimed Mr McCartney.

He also seeks improvements in the visa system, partly to aid Kurds who wish to study in the UK. This was one of the topics developed by Mr McCartney during his meeting with Kurdish students at the University of Huddersfield.

He also discussed progress on another of his high priority issues – direct flights between the UK and Kurdistan.

He told students that progress had been made over security concerns and flights could begin as soon as this autumn, with not only British Airways but also a cut-price airline interested in the new route.

Any such flight between LeedsBradford and Kurdistan’s Erbil airport could be a ‘boost to the local economy’, said Mr McCartney.

Forty-five community groups from across West Yorkshire were given extra reason to be celebrating last week after being issued with a share of more than £200,000.

The Safer Communities Fund allocates grants to local projects which aim to improve communities, with the majority of funding coming via cash seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act. After the first round of grants, £218,000 was issued out to representatives from successful applicants, who received their giant cheques at Tong High School at a special presentation.

West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson, handed over the money and explained why the Safer Communities Fund was so vital to communities.

He said: “As funding cuts continue to impact on charities and voluntary organisations, I am delighted to be able to provide these groups with the money that will allow them to provide an invaluable service to our local communities.

“The feedback I received from representatives of these groups at last night's event was extremely supportive and I was really interested to hear about the projects they will be delivering locally.

“I am really looking forward to working closely with the groups who will be key partners in making our communities safer and feeling safer.”

One registered charity, which will benefit from one of the biggest grants, is the Shantona Women’s Centre, located in the Roundhay area of Leeds.

The organisation, which provides support to mothers and children from a range of backgrounds, was allocated £8,000 from the scheme which will go towards the ‘Strong Mothers, Stronger Daughters’ project, launched in partnership with ‘Getaway Girls’.

More than eight languages are fluently spoken at the centre, which aims to tackle some of society’s taboo subjects, such as domestic violence and child sexual exploitation, whilst also acting as a support group.

Nahid Rasool, director of the centre, said the money was crucial in helping to launch the latest project and she hopes it will help women prevent issues from arising.

“We are a proactive organisation in that we are trying to prevent these problems before they have even happened,” Ms Rasool said.

“With Strong Mothers, Stronger Daughters, we hope to inform mothers on ways they can protect their children, whilst also teaching about social media and the best way for them to support their daughters

in these circumstances.”

She added: “It will be a free eight-week programme for three groups of mothers, and three groups of daughters, meeting to discuss the best way to support the child. There is nothing else quite like it in the city.”

Meanwhile, in Bradford, the Bangladeshi Community Association Bradford (BCAB) was allocated just less than the Leeds support service, with £7,712 handed over to help with ‘Inspire Youths’.

BCAB works in one of the most deprived areas of the city, Bowling and Barkerend, and looks to actively engage youths from all backgrounds, whilst also helping residents with tasks such as job applications, welfare advice and translations.

Jalal Uddin, centre manager, explained how BCAB was planning on using the money.

“The project name is Inspire Youth and, as it says, we hope to inspire young people in terms of development, socialising, understanding and community cohesion.

“Activities will be run to help young people divert from things such as drugs and gang culture, and be more aware of things like having a healthy lifestyle and being more active.

“It’s also helping out with sport events, bringing people together, and helping to educate different cultures about each other.”

On the importance of the funding, Mr Uddin added: “There has been a huge 33 per cent cut in the local youth services across Bradford so the funding we have received here from the police, has allowed us to continue providing projects from here.”

The second grant round for the Safer Communities Fund will open on 12th May and, despite the positive response from the first allocation, Mr BurnsWilliamson is hoping to share even more funds next time.

He explained: “Under current legislation, the Government keeps half of the money seized from criminals. This is cash which could potentially double the amount available within my Safer Communities Fund.

“I am therefore leading a nationwide campaign to bring this money back and would urge everyone to sign my petition which would ensure the subject is discussed in parliament.”

With Britain’s counterterrorism police concerned that British men involved in aid work for Syria may return to the UK radicalised by hardline Islamists, charities are now being scruitinized about aid or money going out to international conflict zones.

With the climate being tense since former Guantanamo Bay prisoner Moazzam Begg arrested and charged earlier this year with terrorism offences, his supporters maintain that he was merely carrying out humanitarian work in Syria.

Majid Freeman, a 26year-old British born from Leicester, is as determined as ever to continue his humanitarian work with a registered charity.

“We’ve taken ambulances, medical equipment, baby milk and food packages and even sent a container with equipment and materials to set up a school. Most of the charities work on the border - we go further into inside to people who they can’t get there.

Like many young Muslims up and down the country who have organised charity car washes and what not to help those in Syria, Majid says: “Over 70% of ambulances in Syria are from UK – they rely on us in a big way and our aid work is a lifeline for these people.

“I’ve been on the ground three times last year and there seems to be no other international help being received. I often question ‘Where is the UN?’” Majid affirmed that the new measures of the British

“Take the word ‘Syria’ and ‘Muslim’ out of the sentence and then describe our work people will be hailed as heroes.”

“The government has a hypocritical position. They praised Dr Abbas Khan, the British doctor who was alleged to have been murdered by Assad forces in Aleppo, Syria, but now are stopping us from giving aid to the very colleagues and hospital he worked in Syria;” comments Majid.

“The Government is cracking down on us as they can’t differentiate between aid workers and fighters who have gone abroad.

“As humanitarian workers our position is to help people and give aid to whoever is in need, whether they are Christian, Muslim or any other faith.”

Majed believed that a change in Government position on Syria, in light of the failure of the Western backed Syrian National Coalition (SNC) and the rise of and the rise of Islamic groups has made their work questionable.

Majid has also been harassed by officers working on the ‘Prevent Project’, a Labour government initiative set out in 2008 that aimed at tackling ‘extremism.

“First they praised me when they met me for my work and asked me questions about my aid activities.

“As soon as I went out to Syria, they visited my family and put emotional pressure by citing that ‘Majid’s life is in danger’. They harassed my family, and put me under pressure through family to stop this aid work.”

Young Muslims in Britain are increasingly facing such pressures with the narrative of ‘extremism’ and ‘Syria’ continuously being churned out by Politicians, think tanks and the media.

“Take the word ‘Syria’ and ‘Muslim’ out of the sentence and then describe our work - people will be hailed as ‘heroes’,” said Majid.

Bradford gran to deliver hundreds of bikes to Africa

A Bradford resident says she is on a ‘mission’ to help thousands of children in one of Africa’s poorest countries by delivering hundreds of bicycles to the Gambia.

Razia Amini, from Heaton, will send off more than 100 bikes next month as part of her work with the charity, Humanity First.

By collecting bikes through donations, eBay and other bargaining methods, Razia will be shipping the goods, alongside thousands of other items, in a few weeks. She will then, alongside three other women from Humanity First, visit the country and help deliver the items over ten days.

The giving grandmother last visited the African nation 12 months ago and says she saw children being forced to walk miles every day just to get to school in some areas.

From that day, she decided that the best way to help the children would be to make the journey from home to school ‘as easy as it could be’.

“When I went there last year I knew what to expect really with it being a poor country, but there were certain places which were a bit sadder than I had thought,” Razia explained.

“I went to a school which was in the centre of this village and I thought we were lost because it was that far away from homes. I asked ‘where do the children come from?’ and was told they come from miles and miles away just to get here.

“Then it clicked for me that when I go back this year, I have to take bikes with me.”

previous visit, with items ranging from clothes, to stationery and even laptops, much of which was bought with her own money.

A self-proclaimed ‘bargain shopper’, the Humanitarian First North-East representative, raised more than £10,000 over the past 12 months through fundraising events.

This money has helped fund much of the items which will be shipped, yet there is still more work to go.

“I have picked up so much stuff this year that we will be able to give even more items to the people of the Gambia,” she said.

“We live this life of luxury over here and then people over there struggle to get even the basics so I see it as an obvious thing to help with.

“I feel very lucky to be able to see first-hand, the work we do in the Gambia and am very grateful to everybody who has helped me in collecting so many wonderful things.”

Razia will be sending off the crate load of goods in a few weeks yet still welcomes donations from anyone who wishes to help out.

In particular, bikes, sewing machines and laptops, are being asked for, as well as unworn clothing.

From 22 April 2014 there are various changes which will have an impact on applicants wishing to commence Children Act proceedings. The Children and Families Act 2014 sets out the following major changes: • Introduction of Single Family Court – A national court for all family proceedings in England & Wales. Although local county courts will still exist to accept counter applications such as divorce, all applications relating to children will have to be issued from a centralised Designated Family Court. The case will then be allocated by the ‘gatekeeping team’ to the most appropriate court and level of judge.

• Compulsory family mediation – Courts will no longer accept applications to issue Children Act proceedings (unless a specified exemption applies) until applicants have first attended a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). This is now a compulsory requirement for separating couples to resolve financial matters and arrangements for children.

• New terminology – ‘Contact’ and ‘residence’ orders will be removed and instead will be called ‘child arrangement orders’. This is to highlight the court’s primary concern of the welfare of the child.

• New rules on evidence – Expert evidence (e.g. local authority reports) will only be permitted if it is ‘necessary’ to assist the court to resolve disputes justly.

• Court fees – There is no longer a court fee for injunction applications, such as nonmolestation and occupation orders, given the urgency and sensitivity of such applications.

Founder of packaging company dies Khalid Sheikh, a UgandanAsian entrepreneur who set up multi-award winning ‘Clifton Packaging’ in the UK, has died.

The business, based in Leicester with a Ugandan subsidiary, specialises in the manufacture of packaging, packaging machinery and contract packing for the food sector.

Having won numerous awards over the years, Clifton Packaging are equally well-known for their commitment to helping young people in Britain.

The founding partner, Khalid, was awarded the “Pearl of Africa Lifetime Achievement Award” in honour of his contribution towards social economic transformation of Uganda and attainment of United Nations Millennium Development Goals across Africa.

For the past eight years, Shabir Hussain has been serving the Manningham area as the local Labour councillor and despite overseeing a number of positive changes, he insists that there is still work to be done.

Much like local councils all across the country, Bradford has been hit by big cuts imposed by central government.

By working with local authorities and the Manningham community, Mr Hussain says he hopes to build on work already undertaken and continue to improve the area for residents and the city as a whole.

Notable projects completed during his tenure most recently include, the successful campaign for noninvasive post-mortems, and a safety first initiative which led to the redevelopment of recreational spaces including the Springfield area and supporting the youth in local community areas.

Mr Hussain states that he still has many issues he hopes to tackle, should he be re-elected, and explained what his main objectives were for the next term in office.

He said: “There are a number of worries that currently affect the Manningham area that will be tackled.

“Firstly, drugs and prostitution; I am working closely with West Yorkshire

Police to eradicate these problems that exist in some areas of Manningham as these issues clearly have a negative impact on the wellbeing of our community.

“Secondly, there is the issue of the far-right wing, Britain First, who recently entered and desecrated the sanctity of some of the city’s mosques.

“In my opinion, these are abhorrent acts designed to deliberately provoke the Muslim community. These instances have justifiably caused our communities

great concern but we must not react violently to this provocation because this would only play into the hands of this extremist group who have no respect for the sanctity of a place of worship.

“I am currently liaising with the committees of the local mosques in Manningham and with the local congregations in respect of implementing preventative measures should such instances arise in the future. We have urged the police to investigate this matter swiftly and prosecute those responsible.

“Another issue that has affected many residents in Manningham and across the whole of West Yorkshire is the cancellation of Pakistan International Airline flights to and from Leeds Bradford Airport.

“It was convenient for local residents, who welcomed the move by PIA to use Leeds Bradford for their flights a few years ago.

“However, by PIA taking this measure of not using this airport any longer, it will also have an adverse financial impact upon both local businesses and the local community because the businesses will lose the trade from our community, who in turn will now have to travel up to Manchester to access these flights.

“I’m currently working with PIA personnel and the airport in an attempt to have these flights resumed as soon as possible.”

He added: “In addition to the above, many British Pakistani residents living in the Manningham area have complained about the red tape that they have to deal with in cases where they need to travel to Pakistan in an emergency.

“They cannot travel without a visa issued via Gerry’s unless they have an overseas ID card. The process can take a few days and this is wholly unacceptable.

“I am liaising with the Pakistani Consulate in Bradford to see whether a facility can be provided for people to approach the Consulate directly and obtain a visa.”

Manningham is a vibrant area that has a multi-cultural

community living in harmony and Mr Hussain says he will continue to work with all members of the ward and address any problems they have to the best of his ability.

Local elections will take place on Thursday 22nd May across local councils and Shabir Hussain is the candidate for the Labour Party. He hopes to be ‘on your side’ once again for the foreseeable future.

In previous articles, we have looked at the case of Société des Produits Nestlé SA –v- Cadbury UK Ltd, in which the High Court allowed Cadbury’s application to register as a trade mark the particular colour purple that has become associated with their brand. That decision was subsequently overturned by the Court of Appeal and now the Supreme Court has refused Cadbury’s application to appeal.

Under the Trade Marks Act 1994, a trade mark cannot be registered if it does not satisfy certain prescribed requirements, including that it must be a ‘sign’ and be capable of being represented graphically. A trade mark can also not be registered if it is devoid of distinctive character, unless before the date of the application for registration it had in fact acquired a distinctive character as a result of the use made of it.

Cadbury had originally applied to register the trade mark and the Intellectual Property Office (“IPO”) had approved the application on the basis of the evidence of distinctiveness acquired through use of the mark. Nestlé opposed the application, but the IPO hearing officer approved the use of the trade mark on the basis of the evidence which proved use of the colour purple on Cadbury’s Dairy Milk since 1914.

Nestlé appealed to the High Court on the grounds that the mark was not a sign capable of being represented graphically as required by the Trade Marks Act and so was not registerable as a trade mark.

mark legislation. The Court were satisfied that the colour purple was associated with Cadbury’s chocolate by the public and therefore Cadbury were able to register their trade mark.

Nestlé appealed to the Court of Appeal on the basis that the mark applied for by Cadbury did not fulfil the criteria that a trade mark must be a ‘sign’ and be ‘graphically represented’. The Court of Appeal agreed and overturned the decision allowing the registration of the trade mark.

The Court found that the trial Judge had erred in principle and had misinterpreted the verbal description of the graphic representation of the mark.

Cadbury’s application covered the registration of a shade of colour plus other material and was not therefore an unchanging application of a single colour.

In the circumstances, the Court of Appeal was not satisfied that the mark constituted a ‘sign’ that was ‘graphically represented’. The lack of certainty which would be created gave sufficient reason for the decision to be overturned.

The Supreme Court has refused permission to appeal that decision on the basis that the appeal does not raise an arguable point of law. Further, the Court took the view that it was not necessary to refer the issue to the European Court of Justice to give a ruling.

This decision reinforces the principle that it is notoriously difficult to trademark a colour linked to a brand.

India welcomed in its newest leader on Friday as Narendra Modi thundered his way to a landslide victory as his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) trounced the ruling Nehru-Gandhi dynasty in a seismic political shift.

Modi's win, the most resounding election victory India has seen in 30 years, was welcomed with a blistering rally on India's stock markets and raucous celebrations at offices across the country where supporters danced, exploded fireworks and gave out sweets.

Singh, whose party looked set to win less than 50 of the 543 parliamentary seats at stake, congratulated Modi with a telephone call.

Crowds surged around Modi's car after he visited his mother's home in Gujarat, where he has been chief minister since 2001.

He sent a message saying ‘India has won’ that instantly set a record as the country's most retweeted Twitter post with more than 50,000.

Modi Wins BJP comes to power in India

Merger Dixons and Carphone Warehouse to team up Carphone Warehouse and Dixons Retail have agreed a £3.8billion allshare merger, creating a powerful pan-European mobile phone and electrical group with about 2,900 stores.

Carphone Warehouse, Europe's biggest independent mobile phone retailer, and Dixons, Europe's number two electrical retailer, said on Thursday the deal would be implemented by way of a scheme of arrangement of Dixons.

The merger would result in each of Dixons' and Carphone's shareholders

holding 50 percent of a group to be called Dixons Carphone Plc, which will likely find a place in Britain's FTSE 100 index of leading companies.

Under the terms of the merger, Dixons shareholders will receive 0.155 of a new Dixons Carphone share in exchange for each Dixons share.

Based on Wednesday's closing prices Carphone had a market capitalisation of £1.90billion and Dixons £1.87billion.

Carphone and Dixons said on 24th February they were in merger talks and had been given a 19th May deadline by the Takeover Panel to agree a deal.

The two firms said they will be able to achieve integrated mobile retailing and procurement synergies, together with cost savings, of at least £80million on a recurring basis which are expected to be delivered in full in the 2017-18 year.

Trade ties praised Diaspora champion welcomes 6.6 per cent growth in UK-India transactions last year

Priti Patel MP, the Prime Minister’s UK Indian Diaspora Champion, welcomes the latest UKIndia trade statistics that show that the total value of bilateral trade between the UK and India grew by 6.6 per cent in 2013 as compared to 2012.

According to the latest data from the Office of National Statistics, the total value of two-way trade of goods and services between the UK and India was £16.4 billion in 2013, compared to £15.4 billion in 2012.

UK exports to India were valued at over £7.6 billion last year, compared to £6.9 billion in the previous year.

In the four years since 2010 when this Government came to power, from 2010 – 2013 the total value of goods and services was £63.2 billion, compared to £43.4 billion in the four years before this Government was formed. Last year, on average there was roughly £45 million in two-way transactions between the UK and India each day.

Priti said: “The 6.6 per cent growth in two-way trade last year is yet another example that the Prime Minister is delivering on his commitment to increasing the UK’s trade ties with India. UK exports of goods and services to India have significantly contributed to meeting this Government’s ambitious target of increasing annual UK exports to £1 trillion by 2020.

“I commend UK exporters for not just the strength of their enterprises, but for realising the enormous commercial opportunities that India presents now and for the decades to come. I hope this trend continues and our businesses continue to reap the benefits of investing and setting up shop in one of the world’s most dynamic economies.”

SENTENCED: Coral Millerchip was handed a two year prison sentence for assaulting 80-year-old pensioner, Joginder Singh, in Coventry last year

Jail for ‘shocking’ attack on ‘frail’ pensioner A woman, who was caught on camera assaulting a Sikh pensioner in an unprovoked, ‘sickening’ attack, has been jailed for more than two years.

20-year-old Coral Millerchip, from Wyken, Coventry, was sentenced at Leamington Justice Centre to 24 months in prison for the attack, and a further 20 months for an unrelated burglary.

Millerchip had punched, kicked and pushed over 80-year-old pensioner, Joginder Singh, in August last year, before spitting on him as he lay on the

specialist audio visual equipment for large scale projections and visual arts.

This is the first phase of work at Sir Jonathan North Community College. A new reception area and offices are now being built on the site of the school’s old gymnasium.

Work to build a new gym will begin later in the year and this, along with general refurbishment of the existing school buildings, should be complete by spring 2015.

Students have now begun their lessons in the new building.

Alison Merrills, principal at Sir Jonathan North Community College, said: “The recently opened new facilities are already having a really positive impact on students’ overall learning experience. We’ve had a fantastic response. The students like the space, light and colour and the calm and purposeful atmosphere this helps to create.

“We are all now very excited

School celebrates milestone in £10m building project Students and staff at a city secondary school will celebrate a milestone in a £10million building project at an event later this week.

Sir Jonathan North Community College, in Knighton, is the latest school to benefit from Leicester City Council’s £350milllion Building Schools for the Future programme.

Cllr Vi Dempster, Assistant City Mayor for children, young people and schools, joined school staff, students and invited guests on May 15th to celebrate the opening of the new Latimer Building and mark the completion of the first phase of the £10milllion transformation.

The Latimer Building includes new classrooms, which will house the science and maths curriculum teams, as well as a new kitchen and dining area. It also features a bright, two-storey atrium which can be used for teaching, exhibitions or events. The atrium is fitted with

ground.

Mr Singh received treatment for a cut nose and bruising across his body before he was discharged from hospital.

He was re-admitted for a diagnosed illness which he was treated for until his death on Sunday 3rd November.

A coroner’s report could not establish any link between the assault and Mr Singh’s subsequent death.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Markham, from Coventry CID, said: “We have continued to liaise with Mr Singh’s

Leicester City Council, through the Leicester Miller Education Company partnership, is delivering the £350milllion Building Schools for the Future programme which will rebuild or refurbish all secondary and special schools in the city.

It is the largest capital investment programme in the city for 50 years.

“There are some fantastic characters, some quirky cousins, and three sisters who all have different experiences of love.”

Malala calls for Nigerian education

A portrait of Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager shot by the Taliban for championing education for girls, will be auctioned in New York and sales proceeds will go to Nigerian charities focused on education and advocacy for girls and women.

Jonathan Yeo, a leading British portraitist, painted Malala in 2013 shortly after she started attending a school in Birmingham, England, where she now lives.

Christie's auction house is offering the Malala portrait, which shows the teenager doing her homework. It has a presale estimate of $60,000 to $80,000. Malala, 16, said she will donate all the proceeds from the auction later on Wednesday to Nigerian charities focused on education and advocacy for girls and women.

Last week, the Malala Fund launched a special fund in response to the crisis in Nigeria, where more than 200 girls by terrorist group Boko Haram.

More BBC ‘N-word’ controversy

A veteran BBC local radio DJ has lost his job after playing a song on his golden oldies show containing a racist word.

BBC Radio Devon DJ David Lowe, 68, said he was unaware that a 1932 version of 'The Sun Has Got His Hat On' included the ‘n-word’.

Lowe, a broadcaster for 32 years, said it was an ‘innocent mistake’.

He said BBC bosses declined his idea of an on-air apology, and his offer to "fall on my sword" was accepted.

The BBC said it accepted that the situation could have been handled better, and offered freelance Lowe his job back.

But the DJ said that the incident had exacerbated a stress- related condition and he would not be returning to the BBC.

A mother and her four-yearold son, who were killed in a fire at their Liverpool home, were the victims of a deliberate arson attack according to police.

Jamna Joshi, 40, and her son, Moksha Jai Joshi, known as Jai, died from the effects of smoke inhalation in the blaze at their flat on Moscow Drive, Liverpool on Thursday 8th May. The pair were in their home when the fire broke out, which police are saying was deliberate, yet have no evidence as of yet of a third party involvement.

Jai, a pupil at Howick CE Primary School in Penwortham, near Preston, was described as a ‘much-loved member of the school’. His classmates will receive support from the county council’s specialist team over the coming weeks.

Deborah Bramley, headteacher at the school, said: “We are all in shock at the news of Jai’s death and extremely upset.

“Jai started in our reception class in September and during that time he had become a very well loved member of our closeknit school community.

“He was a completely endearing little boy with a big

smile and the older children all tended to look after him because he was quite small.

“He was very happy in school.

“Jai was quietly spoken but had an infectious smile which would brighten up your day.

“Jai was a model child who tragically lost his life to a mindless act.

“A tragedy, yes, with many open questions. The family seek for the truth for Jai.” Police have said that an accelerant was used to start the blaze on Thursday morning, at around 5.30am, which led to the subsequent fire and explosion.

The investigation continues.

Stop & search reform Home Secretary announces new measures in the way police use their powers Home Secretary Theresa May this week announced a major package of measures to reform the way the police use stop and search powers.

While stop and search is undoubtedly an important police power, when it is misused it can be counter-productive. It can be an enormous waste of police time and, when innocent people are stopped and searched for no good reason, it is hugely damaging to the relationship between the police and the public.

The Home Secretary today announced that she intends to revise the Police and Criminal Evidence Act Code of Practice A to make clear what constitutes “reasonable grounds for suspicion” – the legal basis upon which officers carry out the vast majority of stops.

The revised code will emphasise that where officers are not using their powers properly they will be subject to formal performance or disciplinary proceedings.

The Home Secretary also

announced earlier this week that this summer the Home Office and College of Policing will launch a new “Best Use of Stop and Search” scheme. It already has the backing of the Metropolitan Police, the biggest user of stop and search in the country, and all other police forces in England and Wales will be invited to sign up.

Home Secretary Theresa May said: “Nobody wins when stop and search is misapplied. It is a waste of police time. It is unfair, especially to young black men.

It is bad for public confidence in the police.

“The proposals I have outlined today amount to a comprehensive package of reform. I believe that they should contribute to a significant reduction in the overall use of stop and search, better and more intelligence-led stop and search and improved stop-to-arrest ratios.

“But I want to make myself absolutely clear: if the numbers do not come down, if stop and search does not become more targeted, if those stop-to-arrest ratios do not improve considerably, the Government will return with primary legislation to make these things happen.”

Forces participating in the scheme must

· Record the outcome of stops in more detail to show the link – or lack of a link – between the object of the search and its outcome, allowing an assessment of how well forces interpret the “reasonable grounds for suspicion” they are supposed to have. They must also record a broader range of outcomes, such as penalty notices and cautions, so it can be understood how successful each stop and search is.

Allow members of the public to apply to accompany officers on patrol to help improve the community’s understanding of the police.

Introduce a stop and search complaints “community trigger” so forces must explain to the public how powers are used if they receive a large volume of complaints.

· The Home Secretary said forces must make clear that they will respect law established in the recent Roberts case by only using the Section 60 “no suspicion” stop and search power when it is “necessary to prevent incidents involving serious violence” rather than just “expedient” to do so. For those participating in the Best Use of Stop and Search scheme, use of Section 60 must also be authorised by a chief officer who must reasonably believe that violence “will” take place rather than “may” take place, as it stands now. Forces must also limit its application to 15 hours and communicate with communities before and after, so residents can be kept informed of the purpose and success of the operation.

The film is based on the real-life story of an impoverished 14-year-old girl

kidnapped from her village in Andra Pradhesh and forced into prostitution and who eventually testified in court against her traffickers.

‘Lakshmi’ will have its European premier on 1st June at LAFF, Europe's oldest and most respected showcase for independent South Asian cinema.

Acclaimed Indian writer and director Kukunoor, known for his work

predominantly in Parallel cinema, will travel to London for the occasion and take part in an exclusive tete-atete following the screening on 1st June at the capital's historic Tricycle Theatre.

'Lakshmi' stars newcomer Monali Thakur in the central role, as well as Indian TV stalwart Ram Kapoor and veteran Bollywood star Satish Kaushik who was also part of the film's production team.

The film had its world premier in January at the prestigious Palm Springs International Film Festival 2014 where it won the Audience Award for ‘Best Narrative Feature’.

Real deal leads to prison Israel's ex-prime minister Ehud Olmert was sentenced to six years in jail on Tuesday for taking bribes in a real estate deal, a crime the judge said was ‘akin to treason’.

Lawyers to face blasphemy charges 68 detained after shouting at officer with same name as companion of Prophet Muhammad Pakistani police have registered a case of blasphemy against more than 50 lawyers who took part in a protest after they shouted the name ‘Umar’ in relation to a police namesake of one of Prophet Muhammad’s companions, Hazrat Umar.

Analysts say the surge in accusations of blasphemy in the country is a worrying sign that the nuclear-armed nation of 180 million people is becoming less tolerant as militant ideas enter mainstream politics.

The colonial-era law may not directly define blasphemy, yet the charge carries the death penalty.

Presenting evidence can be considered a new infringement, so judges are reluctant to hear cases.

Judges who free those accused of blasphemy have been attacked and two politicians who suggested reforming the law were shot dead.

Those acquitted have often been lynched.

Monday's charges followed a protest in which lawyers shouted slogans against the senior police officer Umar Daraz for allegedly illegally detaining a lawyer in the Jhang district of central Pakistan.

Obama would welcome ‘President Modi’

President Barack Obama faces the prospect this week of having to offer his congratulations to a leader who was barred from the United States less than 10 years ago over massacres of Muslims in 2002.

As voting concluded in India's general election on Monday, four major exit polls showed Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi set to

India dines on top quality mangoes after EU ban

Indians are feasting on some of the world's most succulent mangoes after the European Union banned imports of the fruit from India this month, producing a glut and rockbottom prices for local consumers.

Starting 1st May, the EU banned imports of Indian mangoes including the Alphonso, considered the king of all the mango varieties grown in South Asia, because a large number of shipments were contaminated with fruit flies. The pests are considered a threat to crops grown locally in Europe.

‘Those jittery Europeans have taken fright at some fruit flies in our mango exports, flies which they fear will wreak havoc on their tomatoes and cucumbers,’ the Times of India wrote in a gleeful editorial. ‘Imagine

In Mumbai, the capital of the main Alphonso growing region, the fruit is now selling for 150-550 rupees ($2.50-$9) a kilogram, and sellers say they expect the prices to fall even further.

Mangoes start arriving in Indian markets in April, providing a juicy, delicious respite from summer temperatures and humidity as they start climbing to oppressive levels.

Piles of mangoes are cooled in refrigerators or buckets of ice-cold water or pureed to create refreshing drinks that cut through the scorching heat.

The Alphonso, with its golden yellow flesh and distinct aroma, is a favourite and is especially prized because the best varieties are either exported or prohibitively expensive.

This year, however, the stores in the crowded lanes of Mumbai's Crawford market are piled high with crates and baskets of perfectly ripe Alphonso.

Indian mango exporters are worried, as well. They say they may lose the hold they have over European markets. Alphonso mangos are sold from mid-April through June.

Exporters are likely to lose 500BANNED: The European Union has temporarily restricted the 600 million rupees ($8-10 million) in import of Alphonso mangoes from India with effect from 1st May business, according to Sanjay Pansare, a fruit exporter in Mumbai.

The Indian government is also sacrificing the king of fruits for had been out of the reach of most Europe and other parts of the world salad!’

Husband set pregnant wife on fire over dowry

A Nepalese man allegedly set his pregnant wife on fire in a demand for dowry, according to local officers and a rights group.

Farid Sheikh and his parents have been accused by police of spilling kerosene over the woman after tying her hands behind her back. She was seven months pregnant.

According to the victim’s statement, her husband assaulted her regularly saying that she did not bring a motorbike, livestock and other

things as dowry and he burnt her private parts with a cigarette.

The victim, 25-year-old Rihana Sheikh Dhafali of Miyapur, was taken to Bahraich in India for treatment. Originally she had said that it was an accident but after her health worsened and she had a miscarriage on 24th April, she disclosed that it was an assault.

The husband's family deserted her after Rihana's father rushed to India after learning about the incident.

The woman's father then filed a criminal case against Farid Sheikh's family in Banke district, Nepal. The in-laws and husband have since vanished and police are on the hunt for them.

Local human rights group Informal Sector Service Centre said in a statement that the burnt woman had been sent to Kathmandu for further treatment. She remains in critical condition, with her entire lower body wrapped in bandages.

Vietnam protests More than 20 dead as anti-China riots spread through country

Hundreds were hospitalised and tens more killed after rioting broke out in Vietnam earlier this week in one of the worst breakdowns of Sin-Vietnamese relations for over three decades.

A huge foreign steel project was set ablaze by anti-China protestors whilst looting and arson was prevelant throughout the centre of the country on Wednesday.

A doctor at a hospital in central Ha Tinh province said five Vietnamese workers and 16 other people described as Chinese were killed on Wednesday night in rioting.

“There were about a hundred people sent to the hospital last night. Many were Chinese. More are being sent to the hospital this morning,” the doctor at Ha Tinh General Hospital told Reuters by phone.

Formosa Plastics Group, Taiwan's biggest investor in Vietnam, said its upcoming steel plant in Ha Tinh was set on fire after fighting

between its Vietnamese and Chinese workers. One Chinese worker was killed and 90 others injured, it said in a statement in Taipei.

It was not immediately clear if the casualties were among those admitted to the Ha Tinh hospital.

The plant is expected to be Southeast Asia's largest steel making facility when it is completed in 2017. No details of fire damage or financial losses were immediately available, the company said.

The Ha Tinh industrial park, estimated to cost more than $20 billion, is more than half complete. When finished in 2020, it will have a port, a 2,100-MW power plant and six furnaces, Vietnamese media say.

The anti-China riots erupted in industrial zones in the south of the country earlier on Tuesday after protests against Beijing placing an oil rig in a part of the South China Sea claimed by Hanoi.

Wife of legendary Yash Chopra to remember his life and work The death of Yash Chopra in 2012 left the Bollywood film industry bereft of its most iconic filmmaking talent.

Now the life and work of the legendary writer, director and producer is set to come into focus during a unique event on 7th June, as part of the 16th annual Tongues on Fire London Asian Film Festival: Europe's oldest and most respected showcase for independent South Asian arts and cinema.

'Remembering Yash Chopra' will see Pam Chopra, the late director's wife, in conversation with Rachel Dwyer, the respected Professor of Indian Cultures and Cinema at London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and an authority on the work of Yash Chopra, having penned a comprehensive biography on the filmmaker a decade before his passing.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher, who appeared in a string of Yash Chopra productions, including such famous films as 'Darr', 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge', 'Mohabbatein' and 'Lamhe', to name but a few, will also make a special appearance during the event, to be held at the prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Arts in London.

The evening promises a unique and unprecedented insight into the two most important aspects of Yash Chopra's life: his cinema and his family.

Writing soon after the director's passing, Professor Dwyer said: "The work of Yash Chopra is one of the glories of Indian film, his career bridging the Hindi cinema of the 1950s and the globalising India of today. Nothing made him happier than making films; then having his family and friends around him for a great meal: ‘Family, films and food’. His wife Pamela was the centre of his world and his strength."

Pam Chopra, who married Yashji in 1970, was the filmmaker's closest confidante and most scrupulous critic and worked variously as a producer, writer and costume designer on a number of her husband's most memorable hits, including 'Kabhie Kabhie', ' Silsila' and 'Dil To Pagal Hai'; all that whilst forging a successful career in her own right as a playback singer.

Mrs Chopra's tete-a-tete with Professor Dwyer will be preceded by a documentary short film written and directed by award-winning Delhi-based documentary filmmaker

Vinky Singh.

Titled 'The Master Stroke', Singh's film delves into Yashji's use of the 'Navarasa' the nine essential emotional themes that are the fundamental building blocks of Indian art - in the unforgettable and timeless music that became the cornerstone of his films.

The evening will be capped off by another documentary charting Yashji's phenomenal career in Bollywood and a performance by Mrs Chopra herself.

Asian fitness model ready to take the stage at fitness expo

Last year he was just another face in the crowd but now, just 12 months later, Waheed Aesthetic will be one of the most honoured fitness models at this year’s Body Power Expo.

Waheed has been training tirelessly for the past 12 months to get into the shape of his life and appear at Europe’s largest consumer fitness exhibition this weekend in Birmingham.

The fitness enthusiast will appear on stage as one of the selected fitness models on Saturday, alongside some of the biggest names in the industry.

As an attendee at last year’s show, the personal trainer says he was determined to experience what it was like to be on stage, and not just an onlooker.

“It has been a lot of hard work to get where I am now but I just cannot wait until Saturday,” he said.

“I have always taken care of my physique

and tried to look as good as I can but these last few months I have really pushed myself; I just wanted to see how good I really could be.

“I’m down to just eight per cent fat now, I’m training three times a day, and cut out the carbs to get to where I am.”

Waheed, who will also be launching his own line of clothing in the near future, qualified from Birmingham University in 2012 with a degree in Sport Science.

From that point he has worked as a personal trainer and recently took up fitness modelling.

As a Pakistani Muslim bodybuilder, he says he has gathered quite a following and considers it an ‘honour’ to be looked up to by so many people in the South Asian community.

“In this line of work there aren’t that many Asians so I’ve already got quite a few fans which I am extremely grateful for,” he said.

“I enjoy representing the Asian community on the big stage and am always pushing myself to be better than before.”

He added: “In regards to an idol, I don’t really have one. I truly believe that we can always be that little bit better so the motivation I have is simply from my ambition to be the best that I can be.”

Waheed Aesthetic will be performing on stage on Saturday 17th May at the NEC Arena Birmingham on the second day of the Body Power Expo.

Double point’s finish

It certainly wasn’t their best performance of the season yet Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez continued to defy all doubters as they registered yet another double point’s finish at the Barcelona Grand Prix.

Perez, who came home in ninth position, was just one spot ahead of his teammate, of whom he has already built up a strong working relationship with.

Both drivers came into the race knowing it would be one of the trickiest of the current campaign, with neither managing to break into the top ten in qualifying.

This left all the work to be done on the day of the race, and much like they have been doing so far this year, both racers

took the challenge head on.

The Mexican Perez came from 12th place to finish ninth and despite landing in the points, feels he could have achieved even more had they of adopted a more aggressive strategy.

He said: “It was quite a hard afternoon, so to come away with two points is not too bad. I had pretty strong pace in the race and my tyre degradation was okay so I think we probably could have been a bit more aggressive with the strategy.

“Maybe if we had stopped earlier I could have jumped ahead of some more cars because my pace was good, but it was just so difficult to overtake.

“We knew this track would be a tough test for us, so this result is more or less what we expected here. Maybe seventh or eighth was achievable today, but we should feel quite happy to keep up our run of points.”

Hulkenberg also clawed back one position on the grid, having started the race in 10th, to continue his own impressive record of scoring points on every track this year.

“It was a case of damage limitation today,” he explained. “We knew from the early practice sessions that this wasn't going to be our strongest track so to get two cars in the points is a positive result.

“We will use all the data we got over the weekend to improve for the next few races where we hope to be a bit more competitive.”

Meanwhile, Mercedes continue to dominate this year’s calendar with yet another Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg one-two finish in Spain.

Up next for the drivers is the Monaco Grand Prix where anything can happen on the world-renowned track.

‘A mistake’ Ever since the world learnt that Qatar would become the first hosts of the World Cup from the Middle East, people have pointed out the obvious – ‘it will be too hot’.

Yet, FIFA’s controversial President, Sepp Blatter, continued to reiterate his belief that the oil-rich nation will be able to host football’s biggest tournament, even if it meant moving the schedule to the winter.

Now, after more than three years of criticism, Mr Blatter has held his hands up and seemingly accepted that the decision was not necessarily ‘best for business’.

“Of course, it was a mistake. You know, one makes a lot of mistakes in life,” he said in a recent interview on Thursday with the Swiss RTS station.

The average temperature tops 40°C in June and July when the World Cup finals usually take place.

“The Qatar technical report ruled that it was too hot in the summer, but the (FIFA's) executive committee, with a large majority, decided to play in

Qatar,” said Blatter.

It has long been suggested that the 2022 World Cup will now be the first tournament to be held in the winter months to accommodate players, and fans alike, who will be travelling to Qatar.

Mr Blatter once again added that it seems ‘more than likely’ that this will be the case, as he has repeatedly expressed his desire to move the tournament to a more appropriate date.

Temperatures in the winter in Qatar are around 25°C which would be a more suitable playing condition for the 32 nations which compete in the world’s most watched football tournament.

“The best time to play is at the end of the year. You must remain realistic...we must play in winter at the end of the year,” added Blatter.

Next month, the 2014 World Cup will begin in Brazil, where the average temperatures in June and July are approximately 10-15 degrees cooler than Qatar.

Commonwealth Champ Kid Galahad picks up latest title with convincing display

A West Yorkshire college and local football team have kicked off a new partnership this week, with the aim of fulfilling the children’s goals, on and off the pitch.

The Shipley College Guiseley AFC Football Academy offers ambitious young students, aged between 16 and 19-years-old, the opportunity to combine high quality football development with continued academic study.

Operated through the Football Conference League, the football academy has already begun scoring highly with participants and staff who have praised the concept of proactively mixing education and sport.

Head of Major Programmes at Shipley College, Paul Hutchinson, said: “We were thrilled to be asked to form this partnership and it has attracted ‘A star’ students to the college.

“Football is high on the national agenda with the FA Cup and the Champions League finals about to kick off and the World Cup in June. Exciting times lie ahead for Shipley College Guiseley AFC players who could be big names of the future.”

As well as coaching from manager Dave Currie, ex-Celtic midfielder Stuart Gray and first team Player of the Year Danny Ellis, the Academy also receive a two-year BTEC education in Sport, in readiness for potential University entry.

Bespoke education options such as A-Levels or other courses may also be arranged in

On the football side, students are involved in training sessions between six and eight hours a week whilst games will take place on Wednesday’s against highcalibre opponents such as FC Halifax Town, Chesterfield FC, Stockport County, Crewe Alexandra, Gateshead and Macclesfield.

Manager, Dave Currie, said the club has made great strides in becoming more involved in the community over recent years and said that was partly down to the success of the academy.

“Part of this has been its focus on the football academy which has gone from strength to strength both on the field in terms of player development and in terms of using football as a hook to keep 16-19 year olds in school and obtaining University entry-level qualifications,” he said.

“Since it was set up in 2012 the Academy has enjoyed considerable success, finishing runners-up in the Conference Youth Alliance League, getting to the last eight of the National Youth Alliance Cup as well as reaching the first round of the FA Youth Cup. “Recent high-profile signings – two players from the Academy

have gone on to sign for professional clubs - have increased interest and we are looking forward to welcoming more young players to the next course.”

Recruitment began at the start of the year through trials recommendations and scouting and will continue until September. The Academy is looking for a further 20 students to add to the 16 current Shipley College Guiseley AFC Football Academy students.

Vice-chairman Phil Rogerson, who helped set up the Academy, says it represents a great opportunity for young people to mix education with football.

“It’s vital that they get a good education while playing, and the teaching side is not something we treat lightly.

“We’re looking to build on the great start the Academy has had and would encourage anyone who wants to learn more to get in touch.”

The next course will run from 8th September, 2014 till 24th June, 2016.

Ahmed heads to Pakistan England’s spin-bowling coach, Mushtaq Ahmed, has decided to leave the national team in favour of joining up with Pakistan’s side, in a similar role.

Ahmed, who played 52 tests for Pakistan, had been part of the England setup for the past six years yet now becomes just the latest name to leave in a recent shake-up of the backroom staff.

The 43-year-old joins Andy Flower, Graeme Gooch and Ashley Giles as the list of names leaving the national side continues to grow.

A statement from the Pakistan Cricket Board read: “Acting on the recommendation of the coach

selection committee, the chairman, Mr Najam Sethi, has appointed former Pakistan leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed as the national spin bowling coach with immediate effect.

“Mushtaq signed the contract with PCB [on] Monday morning and has taken charge of his position.

“Until recently Mushtaq was holding a similar position with the England and Wales Cricket Board.”

The statement added that another prominent former Pakistan spinner, Saqlain Mushtaq, had also been shortlisted for the position but the committee had decided in favour of Ahmed.

Speaking after the fight, he said: “I’m feeling okay and fairly good.

The win, in front of his home crowd, was just the latest of these stepping stones in the champ’s ever-improving career, and he says the decision on who he will face next lies with his manager.

“It’s up to John Ingle where to go next,” he said.

“Whatever route he wants to take me CHAMP: Kid Galahad, aka Barry down, I’ll be happy to go down – I think Awad, will add the Commonwealth that’s the best way.

Last weekend saw another victory and another title belt for the undefeated Kid Galahad who continued on his fight towards his ultimate goal of clinching a world title.

Galahad, real name Barry Awad, comfortably overcame the Australian Fred Mundraby, at Ponds Forge, to pick up the vacant Commonwealth Super Bantamweight title.

The Sheffield boxer, whose unbeaten streak

was extended to 17 wins with the latest victory, was in control from the first round, landing big left hand blows to Mundraby’s body.

In the second, the current Australian superbantamweight champion continued to struggle against the pace and power of Galahad, who connected with a number of shots to the face, clearly halting him in his tracks.

The Kid was on top and a big combination in the third was followed up by a dominant fourth round from the hometown fighter, with his 26-year-

old opponent retiring after four rounds of punishment.

To Mundraby’s credit, he continued to fight until the end, yet the speed of Galahad had given him no choice but to hold up his gloves and accept defeat.

Victory signalled Galahad’s first bout since his European title win over Sergio Prado in March, and he says he knew it was going to be a hard contest, against a ‘tough competitor’.
