A police officer from Leeds, who rescued a family from a fire at their home earlier this month, has been praised for his bravery and quick response to a potentially fatal incident.

Naveed Ahmed, 41, killed of mother-oftwo Tahira Ahmed, 38, in Merton Avenue, Northolt on 27th May last year.

A post-mortem examination found both her arms had been broken and she had been stabbed and decapitated.

The judge described the murder of Mrs Ahmed at the family home in Northolt, west London as "perfect barbarity".

Ahmed was said to have "snapped like a twig" when he carried out the attack after losing his job as a supermarket manager.

A Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) statement released following sentencing said Ahmed attacked his wife "with a large kitchen knife" and a "metal table leg causing numerous, severe injuries".

After the "ferocious and brutal" killing, he fled the house but was picked up nearby by police who spotted he was sweating heavily and had bloodstains on his coat.

The Old Bailey heard that Mrs Ahmed had previously called officers to the family home on a number of occasions following reports of violence, but no action was ever taken.

Ahmed was born in Pakistan and came to the UK shortly before their marriage in 1998, which was arranged by the couple's mothers, who were cousins.

The court was told he later came to regret the marriage because his wife suffered from a rare degenerative condition known as Morquio's syndrome.

Ahmed had initially denied killing the mother of two but just before the trial was due to start earlier this month he changed his plea to guilty.

Jailing him for life with a minimum term of 22 years, judge Christopher Moss QC said: "Your marriage is reported as being volatile with suggestions of violence.

case make it plain you are a man of jealous disposition. On the 27th of May last year you attacked (your wife) in the most brutal and ferocious way.

"You appeared to use a table leg to beat her. You took a kitchen knife that was later found in the kitchen sink and attacked her with it. You used it to effectively decapitate her at a time she was either dead or dying.

Bradford’s Synagogue Council took the unprecedented step of appointing a Muslim member onto its ruling body last week as the two religion’s interfaith relationship in the city continues to strengthen.

Jani Rashid, a long time supporter of the Synagogue, was approached to join the council by chairman, Rudi Leavor, after his colleagues unanimously passed the decision.

Mr Rashid will be involved in helping to secure funding for the last remaining synagogue in Bradford and work closely with fellow council members.

Speaking of the appointment, Mr Leavor said he had wanted a Muslim to be formally represented on the board for some time and praised Mr Rashid’s commitment.

“The appointment of Jani to our board is certainly the first example I have heard of a Muslim joining a Synagogue Council but our relationship with Jani has been there for a long time,” he said.

“It is an important step for our council to have a Muslim member on the board. It is not just for

face-value because Jani merits the position and will bring a lot to the council.”

He added: “Relations between Jews and Muslims around the world have been strained recently but this is a good example of our two religions working together here in Bradford.”

The relationship between Bradford’s Jewish and Muslim community has grown in recent years, with the latter’s community groups, including the Council for Mosques, helping to fund the restoration of the Bowland Street place of worship in 2013.

Mr Rashid, Head of Diversity and Cohesion for Bradford Council’s Department of Children’s Services, has been working in a ‘professional capacity’ with the Synagogue for almost a decade.

Within his role on the city’s council, he has regularly taken schoolchildren on tours of the religious building in Manningham and said he was now excited to

take up the extra responsibility.

“In a professional capacity I think my relationship with the synagogue began around ten years ago through my work with the diversity and cohesion team,” he said, “but I got involved with the fundraising side of things about four years ago.

“In Bradford there is a small and aging Jewish community but the contribution they have made to this city is very considerable with the synagogue at the heart of much of this. It is therefore important that we do what we can to help keep this place of worship funded.”

Upon receiving the request to join the council, he added: “It came as somewhat of a surprise but I am delighted to have been approached by the council and will work hard in my position.

“This is a great example of how our two communities can live and work together and only indicates how far our relationship has developed in recent years.”

A group of taxi drivers from across Leeds gathered in the city centre last week to hand over a 1,000-strong petition, requesting the right for private hire vehicles (PHVs) to enter bus lanes.

Current regulations mean only hackney carriage taxis are able to enter the lanes alongside the city’s buses, leaving more than 5,000 drivers with no other option but to take ‘the long way around’.

In comparison, the 537 hackney carriages, which operate in the city, are all granted access.

Mohammed Sajaad has been a PHV driver for the past nine years and spearheaded the petition over the past six months, with help from SJK Cars.

In total, 946 signatures were gathered from fellow drivers, and a further 94 from the general public, to make a total of 1,040.

Finally handing the documents over to the council on Tuesday 28th January, Mr Sajaad said it felt like a burden had been lifted and hoped his ‘balanced argument’ would be seriously considered.

“It has taken a very long time to collect all the signatures required for this petition so to have finally handed it over is very satisfying,” he said.

“In truth, we were disappointed that no official from Leeds City Council was able to receive the petition directly on the day as we had arranged the details previously.

“Nevertheless, I am still hopeful and all we can do now is wait for a formal response.”

He added: “The arguments put across in the petition are all fact checked and represent the majority of Leeds’ drivers who just want to get passengers to their destination as soon as possible.

“We have even offered counterarguments in the petition, on behalf of the other parties, and explained how we would help settle any worries.”

The rules and regulations surrounding PHVs and their access to bus lanes is different in every city, with councils such as Bristol, Liverpool and Hull allowing such

drivers in the lanes.

Adal Ali, a minicab driver in Leeds for the past 18 years, has seen a number of new rules introduced whilst on the roads and said he hoped the city’s authority would seriously consider the proposals.

“We provide a public service to people who want get from a-to-b as quickly as possible,” he said.

“The bus lanes prove a huge problem for us. Last week for example, a driver received a ticket for being half-an-inch inside a bus lane, which is just ridiculous.

“There are between five and sixhundred hackney carriage vehicles in Leeds and so many more PHVs, so why are we not all allowed in the bus lanes?”

John Askam, of the Leeds Private Hire Drivers Association, was also present at the handing over of the petition.

He said not enough is being done to help PHV drivers at the moment.

“Every new piece of legislation passed seems to always have a negative effect on private hire drivers,” he said. “They are never introducing rules to help us.”

A spokesman for the Leeds City Council said: “The Leeds bus network carries nearly 80 million passengers annually and bus priority measures provide valuable time savings and service reliability across the city.

“The possibility of allowing private hire vehicles to use bus lanes has been previously investigated by the council.

“It was considered however, that to take such a decision with over 4,000 private hire vehicles registered in Leeds would have a significant detrimental impact on bus reliability and make the bus lanes more intimidating for cyclists.”

Fashion student showcases early creations

A budding fashion designer from a University in Leeds saw her first industry-standard garment design go on show this past week as a special exhibition was held in the city.

20-year-old Sehar Hussain, was joined by other creative designers when ‘The Shirt’ public exhibition opened on Thursday 29th January, at the reception of Leeds Beckett University’s City Campus’ Broadcasting Place.

Running until Friday 6th February, the exhibition displays pieces of work from a number of undergraduate students, enrolled on the Ba (Hons) Fashion course.

Working off a simple brief - to create a white shirt that contains a two-piece collar, pockets, plackets, a yoke, sleeves, cuffs and tucks – the designers were then given creative freedom to put their own ‘personality’ and ‘spin’ on the

shirt.

Sehar, who hopes to work with a design house in the future, and eventually run her own fashion label, explained more about her own final product.

“My design consisted of two layers, an undergarment which was a fitted bodice, and a top layer which was loose fitting - a Two-p two-piece,” she said.

“The best thing about the course is that it covers various aspects of fashion, including hand designing, pattern cutting, construction and computer aided design,” she added. “What’s more, the tutors have first-hand industry experience.”

Course Leader, Katie Lenton, has overseen the exhibition and explained more of what visitors can expect when attending the show.

She said: “The exhibition is a

“I chose to have a normal button stand for the undergarment and a concealed placket for the top layer in order to give the shirt a simple finish to go with the batwing sleeves.”

The promising designer said she had thoroughly enjoyed her time on the course so far and praised the university for its ‘industry experience’.

More than one-hundred guests were welcomed to an evening of food and entertainment they will never forget last week as Akbars finally arrived in Sheffield.

The highly anticipated launch, on Thursday 29th January, came after a number of requests for the delicious Indian dishes to be available in the city, with Akbars’ reputation for curries, one that is hard to match anywhere in the UK. On the night, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Peter Rippon, was joined by local business owners and guests who received a first look inside the new premises on Fitzwilliam Street, and a ‘taste’ of what is to come.

Shabir Hussain, founder and CEO of Akbars, said he wanted to bring his unique dining environment to Sheffield to prevent local residents having to travel miles to enjoy an ‘authentic curry’.

“For a long time now, people in Sheffield have been going to our Doncaster restaurant to enjoy the Akbars experience so we thought

it was about time we brought the restaurant to them,” he said.

“We listened to what our diners wanted and by opening here I hope we are able to continue to build our great relationship with Sheffield’s curry-lovers.”

Entertainment at the launch event was provided by a variety of acts, from fire-eaters to acrobats, whilst a champagne reception and canapés were also on offer.

Renowned Canadian singer, Roach Killa, brought his usual lively act to the restaurant and helped make the night one to remember for all in attendance.

“The night was fantastic and even with the snow, proved to be a big success,” Mr Hussain added.

Sheffield’s newest dining hotspot will offer up the same renowned dishes that have made the business one of the most loved in the north of England.

As well as bringing great tastes and flavours to the city, a host of new jobs have also created due to the opening, as Akbars continues to excel in its corporate responsibilities.

HRH The Princess Royal paid a flying visit to West Yorkshire last week, helping a family business celebrate 40 years of production, and commemorating an employment project in Bradford.

On Friday 23rd January, she was warmly welcomed to the premises of SKA Textiles Ltd, in Huddersfield, and given a guided tour of the premises by Zeb Parvaiz.

A family-run textile company, the business was founded by Khalid Pervaiz in 1975 in Dewsbury, originally specialising in knitting and dyeing yarns to produce heavy jacquard fabrics for ladies’ fashion wear.

Today the company’s impressive array of materials is used by retailers such as Debenhams, Next, Arcadia Group, Marks & Spencer and Primark. Saj and Zeb Pervaiz, the founder’s two sons, are now largely responsible for running the business.

Coinciding with the visit of The Princess Royal, Patron of the Textile Conservation Centre, was the launch of the company’s new corporate brand, focussing on ‘Made in Britain’.

Business Person of the Year, explains: “Due to our investment in additional knitting capabilities, SKA Textiles is now moving into new sectors, which require specialist yarns and fibres.

“As well as for ladies’ fashion, our fabrics are increasingly being used in upholstery; automotive seating; by the fire brigade; the MOD, and in the aerospace sector.

“The textile industry needs to retain skills and talent here in the UK. We must look to bring young people into the industry, and encourage apprenticeships in the sector.”

Meanwhile, on the previous day, The Princess Royal attended a special reception at the Bradford Royal Infirmary to celebrate the success of Project SEARCH. The initiative launched in September 2013 offers young people with learning disabilities a nine month internship, where they undertake tasks in three different departments within the BRI and St Luke’s Hospital.

In the programme’s first year, interns gained more than 900 hours of on-the-job work experience.

Eleven students have graduated and six have since gone on to secure employment in a range of

areas.

On Thursday 22nd January, the Hft Charity Patron, had the opportunity to meet the interns and talk to those involved with running the course.

The Princess also gave an address emphasising the importance of supported employment as a way of helping people with learning disabilities to improve their selfesteem, learn new skills and realise their potential, while earning a wage.

Hft’s Regional Manager, Andrew Horner, said: “We are delighted that the Princess, who is a dedicated Hft Patron with a longstanding interest in improving the lives of people with learning disabilities, was able to join our celebratory reception.

“This is an important project that provides people with learning disabilities the opportunity to develop new skills, widen their social circle, and for many, it helps to realise their ambition of finding a job. Today was the perfect opportunity to reflect on the success of the initiative so far as we look to the future and identify more opportunities to further increase the impact of Project SEARCH.”

Cover story continued With the fire service still not in attendance, the officer grabbed a brick to smash through a downstairs window and climbed into the premises with the help of a garden chair.

PC Saeed said: “We needed to get to the family as soon as possible and the front and back doors were high security ones that we knew we couldn’t break down.

“I’ve had specialist training in getting in to buildings and identified the kitchen window as the most viable access point. I found a brick and smashed the window then climbed in.

“The smoke was acrid and I couldn’t breathe but I was focused on finding them and getting them out in one piece. It was quite a disorientating situation with the smoke alarm going off.”

The fire had started after the cooker was left on by accident and despite attempts by the mother to control the situation by throwing a cloth over it, the blaze continued.

She retreated from the smoke to an upstairs bedroom with her children where the fire service were then called.

This is where PC Saeed found the family. “I ran up the stairs and checked every room before I found them in the furthest bedroom,” he added.

“I ascertained where the keys for the doors were, as I didn’t want to get them out of the room, until I had a clear escape route to take them out.

“The front door was locked and

they didn’t have a key but they told me there was one in the back door. I ran back down to the kitchen and opened the back door and went upstairs and started getting them out. Fire fighters were on scene by this point, and I handed over to them”.

The officer said he didn’t worry about the danger he was in during the fire, and acted as quickly as possible - the same way he would have for his own family.

“I didn’t think of it as putting myself at risk,” he said. “I quickly assessed the situation and decided I could get in safely and get them out. I could see they were frightened and needed immediate help.”

The incident happened on the morning of 3rd January and PC Saeed has been back since to see the family who were staying with a relative after the fire.

Temporary Chief Superintendent Mabs Hussain, Leeds District Commander, praised the officer’s work and commended his ‘bravery’.

“PC Saeed clearly displayed the qualities of bravery and professionalism that we so often see from our officers and staff in situations where people are in danger,” he said.

“He could see this family needed immediate help and his training gave him the confidence to assess the situation and intervene to bring them to safety from a potentially life-threatening situation.

“I am very proud to have officers like him out there helping to keep our communities safe.”

MEP swaps UKIP for Conservatives

Britain’s anti-EU UKIP party was dealt a blow last weekend in lead up to this year’s elections, as a senior MEP, and one of the party’s leading ethnic minority members, defected to the Conservative party.

Describing the party as ‘amateur’ and ‘lacking policies’, Amjad Bashir announced his decision to join David Cameron’s Tories, moments after being suspended for ‘extremely serious’ offences.

Mr Bashir, who won his seat as an MEP for Yorkshire and Humber in May 2014, says the allegations against him during his exit were just an attempt to ‘spoil’ his reputation.

“On Friday I met David

Cameron and applied to join the Conservative Party,” he told the Telegraph newspaper. “It is clear UKIP's action today is a desperate attempt to spoil this and is without any foundation.

“The issues raised in my notice of suspension are historic and well known to the party. Indeed, on one of them, Nigel Farage has publicly defended me over it.”

In response, Mr Farage hit back at the comments during an appearance on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show.

He said: “Whichever way we look at this, he had reached the end of the road with us, he knew that.

“My only surprise, and my genuine surprise, is that the Conservative Party have accepted him - Caveat emptor (Latin for ‘buyer beware’).”

A UKIP spokesman added: “The allegations against Mr Bashir are of a grave nature and we will be forwarding our evidence obtained so far to the police.

“UKIP will not tolerate anyone abusing their positions in the party, as we have a firm commitment to differing ourselves from the existing political classes.

“As a result, Mr Bashir’s involvement with the party was suspended today with immediate effect pending further investigations.”

Such allegations against the now Conservative member, include ‘unanswered financial and employment questions’ as well as ‘interfering’ with candidate selection processes.

Since 2006, UKIP has experienced rapid growth, winning Britain's European elections in May before poaching two of Cameron's Conservative lawmakers, making it a real threat in May's national election to all the leading parties.

With such rapid growth however it has struggled to maintain discipline and lost several candidates in recent months including one who was recorded making insulting remarks about homosexuals and Chinese people.

Catching up with the Asian Express Newspaper, Bilal spoke of how his latest single saw him return to his roots and promised more tracks in the near future.

How long have you been working on the single?

It’s been almost six months since we started recording the song and obviously we had to go through the process for the visuals as well so it has taken a long time.

In order to get the right vibe, I had to come here, to the UK, because the emotion I wanted to put across with the song needed the right scenery for the video.

We decided on Scotland which was a really suitable setting and we managed to have a two-day shoot over there.

How does it feel to finally release Kaash to your fans?

It’s been four years since I arrived on the scene. The eight or ten years before that were a struggle for me because I used to work in the studios as a composer and sound engineer, recording other singers and their vocals.

After my first song proved a big hit worldwide I was able to gather a fanbase who are always waiting for my songs. Today (29th January), we dropped Kaash to these fans and it is already in top ten in iTunes.

I feel very excited about it because I know people have been waiting a long time and I look forward to hearing their views on the song.

How does Kaash differ from previous tracks?

The majority of my songs recently have been like dance music, with fun lyrics, but the first song which I initially started with, and what earned me my reputation, was actually an emotional one.

My fans started following me

released soon, with the next one due in a couple of months.

At the moment, I want to drop a song and then as soon as that one starts moving down the charts, bang, another one comes out and that one goes to the top.

As for the album, I’m just waiting for the right time.

These days, when you release an album, it often doesn’t do justice to all the songs. from that first song and I think they’ve been missing that deep vibe. That is how this song is different to what I’ve been producing for the last two years or so.

With Kaash, you can just sit back and listen. It is the perfect song for this winter weather.

Can we expect a new album to come out anytime soon?

At the moment, Kaash is just a single and I plan on releasing a few more tracks before we do anything with an album. I already have a number of singles ready and they will be

Does it give your singles more chance to be heard by releasing them separately?

Definitely. I think what happens is that whenever someone drops an album, it doesn’t matter if you have ten really good songs, people are always going to pick the first one and listen to that one the most.

That is the one that has been promoted and that is the one with a video. By releasing singles separately, it gives each track more time and more exposure which is only a good thing.

On Chorse for the top Bradford student gallops her way to success

Whilst people struggle to stand on their own two feet in the winter weather, a young schoolgirl from Bradford has shown she is more than capable of controlling four legs, as she excels in her passion for horse riding.

11-year-old Zahra Shah has been riding horses almost all her life and competes in equestrian competitions – both junior and senior.

Hopping on her first horse at the age of just three-years-old, the Bradford Girls Grammar School Year 7 pupil now rides every weekend at Throstle Nest Riding School, Farsley.

Most recently, the talented competitor enjoyed success in WINNER: Zahra Shah may on be 11-years-old but the dressage is already gathering quite a collection of rosettes

ring at a Throstle Nest competition, riding her her favourite horse Charlie - a stunning 14.2- hands chestnut.

With a memorable display of her all-round equestrian talent, Zahra impressed the judges, and despite being considerably younger than many competitors, she was rewarded with a third place winner's rosette.

Competition organiser and owner of the Riding School, Jeanette Wheeler, said: “Zahra is a wonderful young rider and is showing great promise.

“She gave a beautiful performance on Charlie, riding with such confidence to deserve her high placing.”

This latest success is not the first time Zahra has seen her jacket decorated with colourful ribbons.

Last year, she clinched top prize in her first ever show-jumping competition, registering a flawless display, before stepping up to senior competition later that day and earning herself a fifth place ranking in the challenging ‘jump-off’ category.

Zahra began her training at the Shaygate Riding School in Wilsden before moving to the Shay Lane Stables in Halifax. She now rides every weekend in Farsley andenjoys looking after all the horses and learning about stable management.

library’ CAMPAIGNERS: More than 10,000 people have signed their names on a petition calling for Batley Library to stay open

Constructing jobs in Leeds

Construction work on a new £5million facility for Leeds packaging company Samuel Grant Group Ltd has started on site in the Leeds City Region Enterprise Zone.

Once complete, the building will bring the amount of new development and employment space to 425,000 sq ft, with the potential to create hundreds of new jobs.

The 50,000 sq ft warehouse and operations centre for Samuel Grant is scheduled for completion in October 2015.

It is the first of three units being built by Commercial Development Projects Ltd on a 6.75 acre site at Thornes Farm in the Enterprise Zone where Leeds City Council is working with private sector developers to bring forward investment and jobs.

A deal is close to being agreed with a second occupier to build a second 30,000 sq ft unit on the site.

Efforts to prevent a Kirklees library from closing down have been given a huge boost this past week as public support has seen more than 10,000 signatures gathered in favour of keeping the service.

The Batley Library had been singled out as one of many which may have to be shut down after budget cuts would see funding for the upkeep of the buildings fall from £6million to either £3.2m or £2.5m.

Due to the millions that need slashing from the annual budget, 24 of 26 libraries across the region were at risk, including all four in Batley and Spen.

However, during a District Committee meeting last week, the petition was handed over to the powers that be, showing strong opposition about any closure of Batley’s historic building.

15-year-old Haris Rashid, from Staincliffe, was one of the first people to sign the petition and brought in support from local councillors and MPs. He said: “The library is a

10,000 signatures in campaign to protect ‘Wonders of Kirklees’ really important and valuable resource for Batley and for people of all ages and walks of life.

“It simply cannot close and we must fight to protect it.

That's why we contacted Jo (Cox) for her support to help campaign to keep it open.”

Ms Cox, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Batley and Spen, added: “The idea of shutting libraries appals people,” she said. “This is especially so in Batley and Spen where we have such fine, well run services in wonderful buildings.

“Our libraries are among the ‘Wonders of Kirklees’ – from the gorgeous, historic building at Batley to the spectacular art deco library in Cleckheaton.

“If these buildings close they will be lost forever, we will never get them back. They will be quickly sold off and converted into something else.

No one wants to see this and we can’t allow it to happen.”

During last week’s committee meeting, chief librarian, Carol Stump, said one idea to retain the service could be to set up a ‘friends of’ group and utilise a part-voluntary workforce.

Refurb for the Odeon

Repairs are beginning next week on the former Odeon building's domes, following on from work already started on removing vegetation from the building as well as some localised roof repairs.

Last December, Bradford Council endorsed plans by Bradford Live, who want to transform the building into a live music venue.

The local authority is keen to see this iconic building brought back into use, particularly as it is in a key location close to the Alhambra.

Most recently, contractors have been replacing the beck culvert that runs across the back of the site which was in poor condition. New culvert sections have been installed over the last two weeks with the final sections being installed next week.

The contractors will now begin installing new copper coverings on the roofs of the domes to prevent water from getting inside.

Flytipper persecuted

A south Leeds man has been fined for flytipping after returning from a trip abroad.

Omand Obama Essama, from Beeston, was fined £200, ordered to pay £100 costs and a £20 victim surcharge at Leeds Magistrates Court on 22nd January for a crime committed more than 12 months ago.

Back in November 2013, a council street cleaning crew found bags of waste dumped on Harlech Road and by using evidence found in the bags, officers were able to link the abandoned rubbish to Essama.

Despite being summoned to court to account for his grime crime, Essama failed to attend twice.

A warrant was issued for Essama’s arrest and he was detained at Manchester Airport last year on returning from a trip abroad.

Improved Skate Park

Eight young people from South Bradford, have played a key role in improving scooter and skate park facilities in their local community.

The improvements, which have been made at Upper Wyke Skate Park and Victoria Park Skate Park in Oakenshaw, consist of new ramps, enhancing existing ramps, resurfacing areas of the park and adding a grind rail for tricks and slides.

They are set to benefit users at the two parks by making scooting and skateboarding more accessible, fun and safe.

The young people, aged 13 to 19, were supported by Bradford Council’s Youth Service and worked closely with the Friends of Wyke Park, residents and local councillors to plan the improvements.

Kickboxing Queens Sporting Siblings clean up at local tournament The ‘fighting spirit’ of two sisters from Bradford shone through earlier this month as they both picked up medals at an annual kickboxing competition.

Kisa and Nida Hamdani, who both attend Bradford Girls Grammar School, were successful in their categories during the highly anticipated ‘Fightnight’ competition.

Organised by the Fusion Martials Arts club and staged at their centre in the city, Year 8 pupil, Kisa, clinched awards in both continuous fighting and points sparring heats.

Finishing second overall in her age category, the young sporting enthusiast was awarded a silver medal to round off a memorable performance.

Younger sister, Nidah, also

found success in her points sparring heat, finishing in first place for her age category and taking home the much decorated trophy.

The Year 4 pupil is following in her sister’s footsteps in the sport and showed that kickboxing certainly runs in the family with her convincing display.

Both girls have been attending twice-weekly classes at The Kickboxing Fusion Centre for the past two years and have now progressed to their purple and white belt grading respectively.

With further trophies and belts up for grabs this year, the sporting siblings will be looking to add to their recent trophy haul over the next 12 months.

£10,000 reward for JUSTICE ‘Thugs stole my life’s work in one night’

A business owner in Batley is offering a £10,000 reward for information that could lead to the return of 23 boat engines, stolen from his workplace in a ‘life-changing robbery’ last week.

69-year-old Sam AlKazhraji, arrived at his workshop, off Brookroyd Lane, on Thursday 15th January to find his property had been targeted by thieves.

The previous evening, a gang of robbers had used the site’s own forklift truck, to load goods onto the back of a lorry before driving them to an unknown location.

Mr Al-Kazhraji, who owns West End Marine Ltd, said he could not believe it when he drove into the yard the following morning and saw the business had been robbed.

“At around 8am we came up to the gates and you could see that they had been forced open,” he said.

“I drove into the yard and then saw the roller shutter was open for the warehouse and a fork lift truck was in the yard which was very unusual.

“It wasn’t until we inspected the building that we saw the extent of what had been taken. After that I felt sick all day.

“All my staff have families and this is going to affect us all. If I lose my livelihood due to this burglary, the whole staff will lose there’s too.

“I have worked my whole life to build this business up and these thugs came in one night and just took it all away.”

As the business was still in the process of moving into the new site at the time of the burglary, the premises were still uninsured as a new alarm system had not yet been fitted.

This has severely impacted the company’s operations and running costs, leading Mr Kazhraji to offer the substantial reward to anyone that can help find those responsible.

“The £10,000 reward is very serious,” he said.

“It is offered to anyone who can help trace the people responsible for the burglary and hopefully help

return some of the stolen goods.”

The father-of-three adds that he has not been able to sleep since the theft and believes that the robbery was a ‘targeted’ one.

“It was definitely a planned operation with military precision,” he said.

“They took all the most expensive engines, propellers, starter motors and alternators.

“The police agree that whoever did it had planned it for a long time beforehand. They even had an escape plan if they had been caught on the night, as the back lock had also been broken off.”

The vehicle used in the robbery is believed to have been a 7.5tonne lorry with engines on the back.

must have made more than one trip between the yard in Batley and wherever the engines were taken as the number of stolen goods weighed too much for one trip.

Due to this, it is believed the lorry will not have been able to travel more than a 30 minute distance from the site on that night, with the full incident taking place between 10pm and midnight.

The most expensive model of engine taken was the Volvo D-9 (pictured above) which can be noticed by its white appearance, around one-and-a-half metres long, and was wrapped in polythene. Other designs include: Yamaha, Volvo, Caterpillar, Iveco and Perkins.

“I would appeal to anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area on that night to get in contact. I would also appeal to anyone with an interest in boats to be on the lookout too.

Remembering victims of honour-based violence

Memorial Day established to pay tribute to victims worldwide

The birthday of a Bradford teenager, murdered after suffering years of honour-based violence, will be marked this year with the first ever memorial day which remembers victims of honour killings.

Shafilea Ahmed was suffocated to death by her parents in 2003 when she was 17-years-old, after being abused for a long duration of her life and a failed forced marriage attempt.

UK charity, Karma Nirvana, which supports honour crimes and forced marriages, worked with Cosmopolitan magazine, to arrange the day of remembrance to fall on Shafilea’s birthday – 14th July.

TRIBUTE: Shafilea Ahmed was killed by her parents in 2003 when she was just 17-years-old after suffering years of abuse.

Her birthday will mark the official memorial day for victims of honour-based violence

An estimated 5,000 women internationally are killed each year for bringing ‘shame’ upon their families with at least 12 of these victims being British – Many believe the true number is thought to be far higher, as many simply ‘disappear’.

Karma Nirvana and Cosmopolitan launched an online petition via Change.org in May 2014 urging everyone to pledge their support for an annual memorial day.

Over 115,000 signatures were secured together with the support of the three main political parties.

In July last year, as part of the campaign, a poignant image was also beamed onto the Royal Opera House to coincide with David Cameron’s Girl Summit to raise awareness of the cruelty that is still happening in Britain today.

Jasvinder Sanghera CBE, a survivor of forced marriage and founder and Chief Executive of Karma Nirvana, hopes the memorial day will encourage victims of honour-based violence to speak out.

“Girls and women can be murdered for the most basic freedoms – the right to education, independence or wanting to choose their partner,” she said.

“A day of memory will honour these women and dishonour the crime. It will also raise awareness so anyone can spot this abuse and potentially save someone’s life.”

The day was also highly commended by political leaders in the UK, with Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, voicing his support.

Discover Bradford from your phone A pair of enterprising graduates from Bradford have launched a new free hyper-local app which gives access to exclusive offers from local businesses.

George Filippis, 26, and Stavros Violaris, 23, created Appareo as a way for small businesses to connect with consumers without massive overheads.

something visible’ in Latin, which the business partners thought summed up the idea of making small and medium businesses more visible to consumers.

The app, which is available in all mobile formats, has already been downloaded 1,000 times since its launch last month and currently contains offers from around 80 businesses.

Stavros said: “We wanted a way for businesses in Bradford to be able to promote their offers to people nearby and obviously mobile technology is the way to go.

“The app lets you search for offers you’re interested in, either by type or by location, helping you get, for example, a discount on your lunch or advance notice of a sale at your favourite independent retailer. It links with Google Maps, so can even give you directions to the shop you want to visit.”

While the app is only focused on Bradford offers at the moment, the budding entrepreneurs have plans to expand the coverage to other areas such as Leeds, Huddersfield and Halifax.

George and Stavros are also currently recruiting for a developer to join the team as their plans for expansion take place.

After both graduating with a BSc in Business Administration and Management from the University of Bradford in the last two years, Appareo signalled George and Stavros’ first venture into a mobile apps business.

More brown bin collections

Garden waste collections are being rolled out to thousands more properties across Leeds this year as the city continues to promote a green initiative amongst local residents.

People in up to 7,000 suitable properties will shortly receive a letter confirming that the brown bin service will be available in their area, whilst those who believe it is not right for them, can opt out of the service if desired.

The bins are collected every two weeks between March and the end of November when the service ceases for the winter.

Grass cuttings, weeds, hedge trimmings, flowers, twigs, leaves and plants from brown bins are collected up and sent to local facilities where they are turned into compost and reused in the city.

Above average

GCSE achievements by Kirklees students have again topped the national average.

Data confirmed for 2014 by the Department for Education (DfE) shows that 56 per cent of local students secured at least five A* to C ‘first entry’ grades, including English and maths, compared with the national figure of 53.4 per cent.

There was a national decline on the previous year’s grades and this was also reflected locally but, since 2010, GCSE outcomes in Kirklees have shown a significant overall rise.

Overall achievement for young people in Kirklees taking A-Level and level three vocational qualifications also continues to be strong. A total of 79.9 per cent achieved at least three A* to E grades at A-Level, compared with 79.5 per cent nationally.

Friends of Thornbury continue ‘earning their crust’ with morning fundraisers

Parents ‘toast’ to breakfast initiative A team of parents from a Bradford school have raised more than £1,400 by selling toast and juice to pupils every Friday during their weekly ‘Crust sessions’.

Volunteers at Thornbury Primary School, have been taking part in the fundraising activity for almost a year now, with all money raised reinvested back into the school.

On average, they make around £70 per week selling 280 slices of toast and about 220 cartons of juice to the children – something which on these cold winter mornings goes down a treat.

The parents toast and butter bread, store it in microwave ovens on trolleys and, with the juice packs, wheel the tasty treats to the playground for the Key Stage 1 break at 9.45am and the Key Stage 2 break at 10.15am.

of the Friends of Thornbury Primary School group and head teacher at the school, Clare Daddy, praised them for all their work.

Nasreen added that because Friday’s are only half-days at Thornbury, the crust sessions are even more important for the pupils.

“School finishes at 12.20 here on a Friday and some of the kids go straight off to an afterschool club which won’t finish until around half past one,” she continued.

“For this reason, the toast is very important because it might be the only thing they eat between breakfast and going home.”

Other works that the Friends of Thornbury group held previously include a Ladies Night fundraiser and the sale of arts and crafts kits to parents and pupils.

‘£12,000 or another year in jail’ CHOICES: Sajid Ali can either pay the £12,000 now and not face an extended sentence, or add a year to his jail term and pay upon his release

A Bradford drug dealer has been ordered to re-pay thousands of pounds or face another year in prison after being jailed 16 months ago.

Sajid Ali, 27, who was jailed for 55 months in September 2013 for drugs offences, was served with the confiscation order at Bradford Crown Court last week.

His Honour Judge Rose ruled that Ali, of Parkside Road in West Bowling, had £12,109.09 in available assets and ordered him to pay within 30 days.

Ali was arrested in February 2012 following a search warrant executed at his home address.

During the search officers seized cocaine with a street value of more than £30,000 and a large amount of cash.

Ali was subsequently charged and later convicted of drugs offences, together with a charge of possessing criminal property.

Gary Walton, Financial Investigator from the Bradford Proceeds of Crime Act Team, said: “We welcome this confiscation order, which is yet another reminder to criminals that crime does not pay in West Yorkshire.

“If Ali fails to pay, his sentence will be extended by 12 months and the outstanding amount will still

be owed when he has completed it.”

Mark Burns-Williamson, the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire, said: “Cases like these highlight the considerable amount of money we can potentially recover from criminal enterprises and which could be used to the benefit of local people and police.

“I am campaigning for all the money seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act to be returned to our communities, as half currently goes back to Government and cases like this are a timely reminder of the amounts involved.”

Father who left injured children in wreckage of car crash jailed

SENTENCED: Umbar Ali will spend four years and nine months behind bars for offences surrounding the car crash

A Bradford man who crashed his car by driving dangerously and then ran off leaving members of his own family seriously injured has today been sent to jail.

Umbar Ali, 40, of Acre Lane, Eccleshill, had to be traced by police after fleeing the scene of an accident on 22nd March last year, where his Vauxhall Zafira collided with an Alfa Romeo in Queens Road, Shipley.

At Bradford Crown Court today, Ali was

sentenced to four years and nine months after he was found guilty of dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and having no insurance.

Ali left his wife in the vehicle, along with three of his children - one of whom was just 13 months old.

The occupants of the Alfa Romeo, a husband and wife, also required hospital treatment for serious injuries.

Speaking after Ali had been sentenced, Sergeant Rick Lyon of the Western

Area Roads Policing Unit, said: “Ali not only caused the crash with his dangerous driving, he then fled the scene leaving a number of people with serious injuries - which included members of his own family.

“His heartless actions have today been rewarded with a prison sentence, which demonstrates that leaving the scene of a road accident is a serious offence and one that will be dealt with robustly by police and the courts.”

Inspiring teens on screen A team of budding entrepreneurs will be setting up their own online channel next month, aiming to inspire young people across the country.

OurFuture TV is an online platform set to be launched by six Grange Technology College students, which will tell the stories of motivational young people across Yorkshire as well as more renowned celebrities.

As well as real-life success stories, help with things such as personal statements and interviews will also be uploaded to the YouTube channel upon its launch.

Meanwhile, interviews with university represen-tatives will give prospective future students a chance to hear what these places of education look for during the admissions process.

Mohammed Usman, who spoke in front of more than 10,000 people at We Day UK last year and visited India as part of Save the Children charity, is a member of the group.

“A lot of young people across the country have inspirational stories to tell but don’t have a platform to share them,” he said.

“What we are hoping to achieve is a central base to gather all these stories where young people can visit and hear of experiences which will hopefully motivate them to achieve their own goals.

“These are the future leaders of

tomorrow and the next generation who may just need some extra help.”

OurFuture TV already has links with Free the Children and Barclays Life Skills, with Sir Richard Branson and SBTV founder, Jamal Edwards, two people whose own inspirational videos will hopefully be uploaded.

Mohammed added: “Free the Children, a charity I have worked with quite a lot recently, was founded by two brothers when they were only 12-yearsold, so it shows you can achieve anything if you really want to.”

Fahim Zaman, another member of the team, says he lacked the confidence to speak in front of large crowds before attending the Barclays Life Skills programme and now wanted to share his experiences.

“Everyone in the group has benefited from their experience on the Life Skills programme and we all know how important it is to be confident and be heard,” he said.

“OurFuture TV will provide the platform as well as helping young people with understanding important things for their future life choices.”

Giving sufferers ‘a voice’ that will be heard

25 years of mental health care A mental health charity in Bradford celebrated its 25th anniversary last month, in which time thousands of people have benefitted from the crucial advocacy help.

The Bradford and Airedale Mental Health Advocacy Group (BAMHAG) first opened its doors in 1989 when a group of support workers banded together to help empower patients with mental health illnesses.

Since then, it has grown into one of the UK’s longest standing providers of userled mental health advocacy work - providing statutory and non-statutory mental health advocacy within hospital and community settings.

Helping to give people with such illnesses ‘a voice’, the advocates, many of whom have suffered from mental health issues before, do not judge any patient and listen to all requests, big or small.

Sharon Cullerton, director at BAMHAG, has been working for the charity for the past 15 years and said its longevity was down to a rise in understanding of mental health work.

“To reach 25 years is a big achievement but there is still much more work to be done,” she said.

“A greater parity is needed for mental health

issues in relation to physical health because so many people are affected by the illness during their life.

“Official statistics say that one in four people will experience a mental health problem, but I believe every person will at some point. It is a natural part of human being.”

She added: “It is our job to support these people by giving them ‘a voice’ in their time of need and making sure that voice is heard.”

In some South Asian communities, the topic of mental health is still considered somewhat of a taboo subject.

Aminur Chowdhury is a volunteer at BAMHAG and says he has seen the effects of mental health issues with friends and close acquaintances.

Reiterating Ms Cullerton’s sentiments, he added: “I think what we need to see in the very near future is a greater acceptance of mental health illnesses from all communities, especially the South Asian one.

“There is still a stigma attached to the topic yet

anybody can suffer from these issues and it is imperative that we as a community understand this and help in whatever way we can.

“A mental health illness does not only revolve around the idea of ‘jinns’ but can come from a number of sources, with the death of a close family member a very popular trigger.

“The community has a responsibility to help others and by putting them in touch with wonderful charities such as BAMHAG, we can do just that.”

Over the last 25 years, BAMHAG has flourished within the Health and Social Care system, receiving The Duke of York’s Community Initiative Award in 2005 as well as a national award

from the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE) for positive practice in Mental Health.

Today a team of 19 staff and individual advocates specialise in Community, Older People, Independent Mental Capacity and Independent Mental Health advocacy work across Bradford and Airedale.

Mark received a £250,000 investment in his digital marketing agency, Climb Online, which is run with business partner Lord Sugar, and was invited to

the Roundhay road solicitors on their behalf.

Chapman Dhillon Solicitors specialise in personal injury claims arising out of road traffic accidents, slips and trips, accidents at work, and industrial disease.

he Court of Appeal has held that the duty of an accountant is limited to the terms of their retainer. In the case of Mehjoo –v- Harben Barker (a firm) & Anor, which involved a claim for professional negligence, it was held that a firm of accountants who gave general tax advice did not have a duty to give advice on a specialist tax scheme which provided significant tax advantages to their client.

Mr Mehjoo who was born in Tehran, the capital of Iran, had resided in the UK since he was a child. He became a successful businessman of the high street fashion company ‘Bank’ which was sold for£8.5 million in 2005. Mr Mehjoo consequently faced a Capital Gains Tax liability of £850,000. Mr Mehjoo successfully sued his accountants, Harben Barker, based in the Midlands, for professional negligence and was awarded £1.4 million after the firm had failed to recommend the use of an offshore tax avoidance scheme known as a Bearer Warrant Scheme. This scheme reduces the amount of Capital Gains Tax for non-UK domiciled residents.

The term ‘domicile’ is a legal concept which the English Courts use to determine which legal system applies to an individual where the individual has connections with more than one jurisdiction. Although Mr Mehjoo was resident in the UK and owned a British passport he was classed as nonUK domiciled for tax purposes.

Harben Barker had been Mr Mehjoo’s accountants and tax advisors for over 20 years. The retainer had referred to Harben Barker providing ‘general tax planning advice’ and confirmed that more extensive

tax advice was available on request.

At first instance the Court found that the conduct of Harben Barker (who had voluntarily offered tax advice over the years) established a variation to their retainer and found that Harben Barker had a duty to recognise Mr Mehjoo’s non-UK domicile status and refer him to a non domicile specialist.

The decision caused controversy amongst accountants who as a result of the decision had a contractual duty to advise on all areas of tax avoidance even if that area was out of their expertise.

The Court of Appeal however held that the case was wrongly decided and Harben Barker ‘were not and never had held themselves out to be specialist tax planners’. They had never offered to give Mr Mehjoo specialist tax advice, and Mr Mehjoo had never requested this advice.

The Court of Appeal held that a reasonably competent accountant could not have been expected to have known that the Bearer Warrant Scheme existed. It was held to be enough for Haben Barker to discharge their duty of care by stating to Mr Mehjoo that other tax schemes may be available.

In holding that Haben Barker were not professionally negligent, the Court of Appeal drew a distinction between ‘general’ and ‘specialist’ tax advice. Although the case is good news for small and medium sized accountants who will not be held responsible for failing to advise on wider areas out of their expertise, what counts as ‘specialist’ advise may be hard to apply in practice.

HOME SECRETARY ANNOUNCES £10 MILLION FUND FOR COLLABORATION BETWEEN ACADEMICS AND POLICE AT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CRIME Last week, the Home Secretary announced a new £10 million Police Knowledge Fund to support closer working between police and academia in order to promote evidence-based policing and more effective responses to crime.

The Home Secretary, Theresa May, made the announcement during a keynote address to the inaugural International Crime and Policing Conference being hosted by the Home Office in London on the 28th and 29th January.

The event brings together academics, charity leaders and senior police from across the globe to explore the sharp decline in crime across much of the Western world in the last 20 years and address challenges posed by previously under-reported crimes or new technology.

The Police Knowledge Fund will play a key role in developing that understanding. It will be jointly funded by the Home Office and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), which will administer the Fund. Its scope and aims have been

established in partnership with the College of Policing.

It is hoped that the police will join forces with experts from academic fields like criminology, economics, neuroscience and computer analytics to better understand why crimes are committed and use that evidence to develop new and innovative ways of policing.

“But we are not complacent and we know that the picture is becoming more complex. We must develop better analysis and evidence on crime trends and drivers and share it so that police forces and others can ensure crime keeps falling.

“I am clear that government and law enforcement do not have all the answers, and that we need to

A formal complaint has been lodged against Judge Jeanette Traverso's handling of the case last year, in which she dismissed claims the care home tycoon organised the murder of his wife Anni while on their honeymoon in Cape Town in 2010.

The Higher Education Transformation Network (HETN) accused Judge Traverso of "gross judicial bias and misconduct". The judge called a halt to the trial in December, two months into the hearing, after an application from Mr Dewani's counsel that the prosecution case was flawed.

Mr Dewani, 34, fought a long UK court battle against extradition before being cleared of murdering Anni when the Swedish-raised engineer was shot dead as the couple toured a rough suburb of Cape Town on 13th November 2010.

HETN chairman Lucky Thekisho said: "Article five of the Judicial Code of Ethics requires judges to act honourably not only in the discharge of official duties but to act honourably and in a manner befitting judicial office in a professional manner that enhances the public trust in or respect for the judiciary and the judicial system."

Three men - Zola Tongo, Mziwamadoda Qwabe and Xolile Mngeni - already serving jail terms for their role in the killing claimed Mr Dewani arranged a hijackinggone wrong in which he would survive and his wife would be killed.

But Judge Traverso ruled their evidence was flawed and the case was thrown out before Mr Dewani could give evidence in the witness box.

The trial was riddled with delays while swathes of evidence were dismissed or considered irrelevant to the case.

German prostitute Leopold Leisser was lined up to testify about bisexual Mr Dewani's double life, but his court appearance was reduced to little more than a 15minute offering after the judge decided it contributed little to the evidence already submitted as part of Mr Dewani's witness statement.

Qwabe struggled to tell the difference between his right and left while another star prosecution witness - self-styled middle man Monde Mbolombo - was granted immunity by the state for testifying against the Briton.

Mr Dewani, who had spent eight months undergoing treatment at a hospital on the edge of Cape Town after being extradited to South Africa, was not called to give evidence in his own defence.

He returned to England at the conclusion of the case without ever commenting in public. He has always denied any involvement in his wife's murder.

New Rushdie publication

Controversial British author Salman Rushdie's first novel in seven years will be released in September, his publishers said.

The title, ‘Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights’, is a reference to the collection of folk tales known as the Arabian Nights. “[It] blends history, mythology and a timeless love story to bring alive a world that has been plunged into an age of unreason,” publishers Jonathan Cape said in a statement.

Rushdie, known for lengthy tomes such as the Booker Prize winning "Midnight's Children", says his latest book is shorter than previous works.

“It's not long. It will be something like 250 pages, which is like clearing my throat. I have finally learned how to shut up,” he reportedly told the Cheltenham Literature Festival in southwest England last year.

Rushdie, 67, was placed under a fatwa

by Iran over his 1988 book "The Satanic Verses" and received police protection. His last novel for adults was "The Enchantress of Florence" in 2008.

Remembering Churchill

Britain on Friday marked 50 years since the state funeral of wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill, with the boat which carried his coffin in 1965 retracing its journey down London's River Thames.

Britain's current leader, David Cameron, began the commemorative events by laying a wreath at a statue of Churchill in parliament delivering a message that praised him as one of Britain's greatest ever statesmen.

Churchill, remembered across the world for announcing the Allies' victory over Nazi Germany in 1945 by raising his hand shaping a V-sign, died on 24th January 1965 at the age of 90.

His state funeral was the world's largest at the time, attended by leaders from more than 100 countries, as well as Britain's Queen Elizabeth, an unusual honour for a Prime Minister.

Benefits cap “I don't think a family should be able to get more in benefits than someone going out to work,” says the Prime Minister David Cameron has said that his party’s plans for a fresh squeeze on benefits if he regains power at the general election in May are a ‘basic issue of fairness’.

The Prime Minister has indicated that he would act "within the first few days" of forming a new government to reduce the annual benefits cap introduced by the Coalition from £26,000 to £23,000.

He said the savings generated would provide another £135 million towards funding three million apprenticeships by 2020.

With 100 days until polling on 7th May, Mr Cameron rejected claims that the new cap would plunge more families into poverty, saying members of the public had repeatedly complained that it had been set too high.

"This is a basic issue of fairness. I don't think a family should be able to get more in benefits than someone going out to work, working every day, and trying to do the right thing for them and their family," he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

"One of the criticisms of the cap set at £26,000, which I have heard all over the country, is that the cap was set too high. We're responding to that.

"We're generating these jobs. People listening to this programme don't pay their taxes to sustain people on welfare who could work."

He confirmed that regulations to tighten the limit - which are expected to mean an additional 40,000 households seeing a reduction in state help - would be among the first priorities of a Conservative administration.

The maximum loss - on top of the effects of the existing cap - would be £60 a week, with an average weekly loss of around £40 or £25 for those newly capped.

Another £120 million would come from removing housing benefit from 18 to 21-year-olds on Jobseeker's Allowance.

The rest of the £300 million-plus cost of the scheme - around £75 million - is expected to come from "benefit savings as young people move into work more quickly", the Tories said.

UK stars call on PM to help Syrian refugees A star-studded list of UK celebrities from Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, to musician Sting and television presenter/actor Michael Palin wrote to Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday 26th criticising the January, government for not welcoming more Syrian refugees.

A year ago, Britain announced it would accept several hundred of the most vulnerable Syrian refugees as part of a special resettlement programme.

But the latest figures show only 90 have arrived so far, according to the Refugee Council, one of the leading charities in Britain working directly with refugees.

"In a climate where children are sent to work in order to help their parents survive, where young girls are sold off as child brides and where torture victims are unable to rebuild their lives, every resettlement place (that) countries like Britain provide is a lifeline," the celebrities said in an open letter.

"Resettling 'several hundred people' just isn't good enough for a global leader. This issue isn't about migration statistics or party politics, it's about people. It's about the values that we in Britain hold dear; compassion and humanity."

Other celebrities who lent their support were actresses Vanessa Redgrave, Juliet Stevenson and Michelle Dockery, artist Grayson Perry, and film directors Ken Loach and Stephen Frears.

Television presenters Dan Snow and fashion designers Vivienne Westwood and Bella Freud also signed the letter.

The exodus from Syria's nearly four-year conflict is one of the largest forced migrations of people since World War Two. At least 3.7 million Syrians from a population of about 23 million are registered as refugees, mainly in neighbouring states, which are straining to provide accommodation, food, water and sanitation to the new arrivals.

In Lebanon, home to 1.16 million Syrian refugees, one in four residents is a refugee. Turkey hosts a further 1.62 million Syrian refugees, Jordan 622,000 and Iraq 235,600, according to the latest figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The UNHCR, which wants to resettle 130,000 Syrians outside the region by the end of 2016, has repeatedly urged rich nations to show solidarity with Syria's neighbours and take more

refugees.

Since 2013, Germany has pledged to take in 30,000 Syrians, Australia 5,600, Sweden 1,200 and Norway 1,000.

The Refugee Council's Chief Executive Maurice Wren said Britain's funding to the relief effort was not enough, in a bid to escalate the issue in political debate ahead of a general election in Britain in May. "The question is does David Cameron want to go down in history as the prime minister who rationed his compassion to a few hundred people when there was the opportunity to offer

safety to so many more?" he said in a statement.

Mark Goldring, the chief executive of Oxfam, has also lobbied for more refugees to be resettled in Britain.

"We can no longer continue to treat this problem solely at arms length. For some refugees, life in camps or makeshift shelters is not just hard, it is impossible," he said.

The statements come as Syrian refugees endure a particularly severe winter in the Middle East.

Russians in British airspace

Britain summoned the Russian ambassador on Thursday and asked him to explain why two Russian ‘Bear’ long-range bombers had flown over the English Channel the previous day, a move that forced British authorities to divert civil aircraft.

“The Russian planes caused disruption to civil aviation. That is why we summoned the Russian ambassador today to account for the incident,” the foreign office said in a statement.

Typhoon fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the two Russian planes, which were flying close to UK airspace, on Wednesday.

The foreign office said the incident was part of an increasing pattern of ‘out of area operations’ by Russian aircraft, noting the planes had stopped short of entering UK airspace.

Hoax caller speaks to PM

British Prime Minister David Cameron said on Monday security would be reviewed, but no harm had been done, after an apparently drunk hoaxer claiming to be the director of Britain's eavesdropping agency was put though to his mobile phone.

Cameron had been walking near his home in central England on Sunday when his BlackBerry phone rang and he was told there would be a conference call with Robert Hannigan, the head of Government Communications Headquarter, or GCHQ. “A voice came through, a voice I didn't recognise. The voice said he was sorry to wake me up, which I thought was strange as it was 11 o'clock in the morning,” Cameron told reporters.

“So I quite rapidly asked 'who is this?' to which the answer came 'it is a hoax call,' and so I pushed the red button on the BlackBerry which ended the call.”

Making it safe to ‘dine out’ Top 14 allergen ingredients singled out by restaurants and takeaways

Allergen sufferers across the UK will have a clearer picture of what foods are ‘safe to eat’ when dining out this year, due to new legislations put in place for all eateries.

From 13th December 2014, restaurants and takeaways have been required by law to tell customers if any of the top 14 allergen ingredients are in the food they serve.

The regulation comes in after research conducted by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) found that 70 per cent of people with allergies avoided ordering from takeaways due to the risk of allergic reactions, whilst 53 per cent added that they avoided restaurants for the same reason.

Restaurants and takeaways now have to inform their customers about 14 specific allergens that range from widely known ingredients such as nuts and milk, to less widely recognised allergens including mustard and lupin seeds,

which are often used in flour.

Around two-million people in the UK suffer from allergies including two per cent of adults and eight per cent of children.

Amongst those children are sisters, Reyneisha and Preyarnka Kumar, from East London.

Six-year-old Reyneisha is allergic to dairy, whilst her younger sibling cannot eat shellfish.

Speaking about the condition, Preyarnka said: “I don’t like having an allergy. Sometimes my skin is so itchy I cannot sleep and then I am tired in the morning.

“My mummy has shown me the food I must not eat so I must be very careful. It makes me sad.”

It is hoped these changes will bring about a reduction in the number of allergic reactions caused by people accidentally eating food they are allergic to.

measures will make it simpler for those with allergies to buy and consume food,” he said.

“The legislation is a huge step forward for those with allergies, who should now feel confident they have a right to ask about allergenic ingredients in the foods they buy.

“This normalises allergen information as something that should be available at all times.”

£7 billion deal to build petrochemicals plant in Iraq Oil giant Shell has signed a deal with Iraq worth £7 billion pounds to build a petrochemicals plant in the southern oil hub of Basra.

"The Nibras complex will be one of the largest (foreign) investments (in Iraq) and the most important in

A Shell spokesman told Reuters Iraq's cabinet had authorised the project on 13th January.

"Shell has been working with the Iraqi ministries of industry and

minerals and jointly with the ministries of oil and transport to develop a joint investment model for a world-scale petrochemical cracker and derivative complex in the south of Iraq," he said.

Shell is one of the main major oil

companies operating in south of Iraq, operating the Majnoon oilfield and leading the Basra Gas Company joint venture. It signed a memorandum of understanding with the ministry for the Nibras project in 2012.

The southern Chinese city of Shenzhen suspended 14 police officers and put a police chief under investigation on Tuesday on suspicion of feasting on an endangered giant salamander, state media reported.

U.S. Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said India's involvement could focus on intelligence on the flow of money and militants to the radical Islamist group active in Syria and Iraq rather than deploying troops on the ground.

"When you look at our broader counter-terrorism cooperation and how we're tracking the flow of fighters and terrorist financing there, I do think we want to find space for cooperation," he told reporters.

The comments came hours after Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi together watched a dazzling Republic Day military parade. Excitement ran high over Obama's visit, which began on Sunday 25th January with a clutch of deals to unlock billions of dollars in nuclear trade and deepen defence ties.

Most significant was an agreement on issues that, despite a groundbreaking 2006 pact, had stopped U.S. companies from setting up nuclear reactors in India and had become one of the major irritants in bilateral relations.

A Qatari-led consortium looked set to win its long-running battle to buy Songbird Estates Plc on Wednesday after the owner of London's Canary Wharf business district dropped its opposition to the $4 billion offer.

Songbird said it still thought the price undervalued its properties but with no rival bid forthcoming and holders of 86 percent of the shares backing the deal, it said minority investors should accept.

IN A SPAT! Imran Khan gets court summons for defamation

A court in Islamabad, Pakistan, has summoned Imran Khan over a defamation notice filed by a former Chief Justice.

Imran Khan, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, had accused former Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry of poll rigging in the 2013 general election.

Filed by the former Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s counsels Sheikh Ehsanuddin and Taufeeq Asif, the libel suit argues that Khan's allegations against Chaudhry were defamatory and claimed Rs20 billion (£131 million) in damages.

Chaudhry petitioned to the court, saying that the rigging allegations levelled against him were false.

He also recounted how in a written response to the previous libel notice which was issued on 24th July last year, Imran's lawyers had said that he did not mean to “abuse or disrespect any

member of the judiciary”, and had urged the former chief justice to “reconsider the idea of entering into personal litigation”.

Chaudhry said that Khan should pay the damages for attempting to discredit him.

The District and Sessions judge Justice Nazir Ahmed Gajana has given a deadline of 29th January for Imran Khan to appear in court by 29th January with his response.

Last year, Chaudhry had sent a libel notice, stating that legal proceedings would be initiated against the PTI chief if he failed to apologise for the allegations he had levelled against the former chief justice.

Imran had said he stood by the allegations he had levelled against Iftikhar Chaudhry, while his aides claimed the lawyer drafted the letter without consulting with the PTI chairman.

Speaking to media representatives outside his Bani Gala residence, Imran said that he does not have Rs20 billion to give as a compensatory amount to the former CJ. The PTI chief said that he would pursue this matter, claiming that the CJ's role in the 2013 election rigging is coming to the forefront.

"Rs20 billion is quite a lot of money and I don't have that amount. I will ask Arsalan Iftikhar for money as he has managed to make a lot of it," Khan said.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui clarifies on his Hollywood film opposite Nicole

There is a price that one has to pay for success, and even the master and passionate actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who still has his feet firmly on the ground, has to face it.

For those of you who are not quite familiar with him, he’s had a subtle climb in the industry and now has some noticeable and acclaimed performances in films tucked under his belt.

He’s earnt his respect in films such as ‘Black Friday’ (2004), ‘New York’ (2009), ‘Peepli Live’ (2010), ‘Kahani’ (2012), ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ (2012) and ‘Talaash’ (2012).

We were quite shocked when we

heard rumours that Nawazuddin’s PR had claimed that he is starring in a film opposite Nicole Kidman and has scenes with her.

When we called Nawaz, he was shooting for Kabir Khan’s next project, and promised to get back to us as soon as he was through, and as always he did.

Here is what Nawaz said: “You know me very well. I don’t have a PR as I am here to work and if my director is satisfied, that gives me utmost satisfaction. I don’t know where it came from that I’m doing a Hollywood film opposite Nicole.”

Giving us the exclusive details Nawaz told us: “You know I had

this very nice mail from Garth Davis, where he asked me to do this one scene/short appearance in his film. If you want I can forward it to you. That is it! And I’m doing it.

“I don’t have the gift of the gab, but as my well-wishers had advised I try to talk, give interviews and answer queries. But not while I am shooting, as I have my utmost attention and focus on that.

“The only person I talk to is my mother who is sick, not even my brothers or relatives. People have to understand that. It really pains me to read such unsubstantiated stories,” concludes the humble actor.

The heartbroken and dejected Shivi slips into a constant drunken stupor in a world filled with debauchery and sinfulness. However, His life is dramatically changed when he meets ‘Shastry’, (Mithun Chakraborthy), a Vedic scholar, who inspires him to change his shallow, unfulfilled life.

Shastry shares his life-long dream of making an airplane based on the principles of the Hindu religious texts, the Vedas. Hence begins the two men’s poignant, courageous and exciting journey, one a whimsical genius and the other a witty, crazy dreamer.

However, the course of life and love never runs smoothly, as Shivi finds himself the perpetrator of the ultimate betrayal against his good friend Shastry. Will Shivi be able to redeem himself after his unthinkable actions and will he and his true love Sitara reunite and realise the life-long dream of his friend and mentor?

We catch up with the film lead actor and actress to find out more.

Q. So what’s ‘Hawaizaada’ about?

A: It’s about the flight of the first unmanned airplane in India in 1895. When I learnt more about the character and the story of the event, I found that this was before even the Wright brothers in America, which I find incredible. India had a real role to play in the history of aviation and I think it’s great we’ve got this chance to show that to the world.

Q: How has your experience been in the film industry considering you come from a non-film background?

A: Yes, I come from a non-film background and to survive in the film industry, one needs talent as well as luck. Of course in an industry like this, acting and talent is the most important. But luck is an important factor too - I certainly believe that you can’t

be successful without talent, but even if you’re talented and luck doesn’t favour you, you’re still not going to get where you want.

Q: How was your experience working with Ayushmann Khurrana?

A: Director Vibhu Puri wanted us to attend workshops so we could get under the skin of our respective characters. We built a good rapport, and as we are both fairly new in the industry we would end up discussing a lot of our scenes and bounce ideas and opinions off each other.

Ayushmann as a co-star is easy to work with and is quite a natural actor.

Q: If you could portray any character who would it be?

A: It would have to be Madhubala. I would love to do a biopic on the legendary actress who was recognized all over for her timeless acting and beauty. I like her story, her life was interesting and there is romanticism in her life. I think it

insisted that we get it right even if it took a dozen takes but if that’s what it takes to make a great film, that’s the price you’ve got to pay. He’s got a real eye for detail and despite the cast groaning about doing a certain shot over and over again, in the end you’ve got a great scene.

Q. And your character?

A: I play Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, who designed the plane. He was a fascinating character both as a historical figure in India’s history but also as a human being. Vibhu Puri (director) offered me this amazing story of an unsung hero. The way he has fictionalised it, the way he has taken the creative liberty and added his own flavour to the story of a guy who made the world’s first aircraft is incredible.”

Q. We heard that you weren’t paid for this film, is this true?

A: Yes, it’s true. To be honest, I didn’t look to do this film for the money. The film was having some trouble with budgets and I knew I didn’t want to charge for my services because it was worth it! There are some films you do to satisfy your soul, not your stomach.

Q: What was it like working with Vibhu Puri?

A: I didn’t know too much about him other than what friends had said about him. With them though, he had a great reputation despite being very new on the scene. I think this was his first full-length film. He’s young, but he works like a seasoned pro. He’s like all directors should be, to the point and knows how to talk to his cast.

Vibhu had a very clear vision of how he wanted the film to go and he did as much as he could to make that happen. He was keen on hearing other people’s point of view, which I like. Sometimes an actor would suggest a way a certain shot was taken and he’d say ‘Actually, that’s better!’

Q: You’ve said before that this film has touched you. Would you like to explain why?

A: There were several reasons.

When you spent 18 months on anything, it’s always going to be of significance to you. In the future, when I look back, I’ll think of the time I spent with this team and on ‘Hawaizaada’. I also found the storyline Q: Hawaizaada took one-and-a-half years to fascinating. It was a story that I had to fully make. What made it take so long? research to get under this man’s skin and be him.

A: There were some complications regarding When you become a real life person, it’s very budgets, which did delay the filming. different to playing a fictional one, there’s Unfortunately some things are out of your control something to base your character on. With films so you have to just get on with it. But delays aside, you get out of them what you put in. I put my this film took a long time to make because it was heart and soul into this film because I truly cared worth it. A lot of films get churned out but this about it. When you care that much about a film, film needed to have time taken over it. Vibhu it’s always going to have a huge effect on you.

Pallavi Sharda – Lead Actress Q: Tell us something about your role in Hawaizaada.

A: I play a ‘Tamasha’ dancer in the movie. I think my character has come up very well. All thanks to our director Vibhu Puri & my co-star Ayushmann Khurrana who encouraged me to give my best to the film. I won’t like to give away much detail on my role at this moment, I just want all my fans to go watch me in a completely different role. I got another chance to show that I can play these kinds of roles too.

I believe I'm a versatile actress and hope that people would love my work.

Her films like ‘Mughal-EAzam’, ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’, ‘Barsaat ki Raat’ or ‘Kaala Paani’ have immortalised Bollywood and I have watched all of her films countless times. In fact, I’m a trained classical dancer and often during my rehearsals I used to watch Madhubala’s songs and try to emulate her moves and expressions.

Q: How was your experience working with Mithun Chakraborty?

A: I consider it an honour to work with someone like him.

Mithun Sir is a legend that everyone has idolised and watched growing up. Whether it’s his disco dance moves, dialogue delivery or on-screen presence, he has the spark that will never leave him. It’s so inspiring to watch him or just be around him, honestly. I was so nervous when I met him for the first time on the sets of ‘Hawaizaada’, but he was very humble and easy-going. He is absolutely amazing to work with and I learnt so much just by observing him. His experience

shows in every frame as he’s that effortless. He has amazing energy and his enthusiasm of an 18-year old just rubs off on anyone who is around you.

Q: What was the biggest challenge you faced during the film?

A: I think personally it would have to be playing the character of a Marathi girl. I had to undergo special training to learn the various nuances of Marathi as a language, its culture as well as dancing since I play a dancer in the film. I have always loved dancing and performing different styles is every dancer’s dream. Vibhu Puri also asked me to closely observe Maharashtrian mannerisms and do my own research on things that would help me get under the skin of the character.

Looking back, it all seems quite amazing how much I have learnt but back then during the initial phases it was quite daunting and challenging. But every actor goes through these various phases to become better at what they do so I am thrilled with the results and hope that the audience will enjoy my character as much.

Mughal Empire.

The lead track, ‘Ali Mola’, a Qawwali piece, accompanies the scene when Dara goes to see a Sufi mystic for a blessing before embarking on a war. During the scene the mystic tells Dara a story so profound the prince finds himself moved to tears.

The experience of religious ecstasy through the repetition of Qawwali chants at the core of Sufi devotional music, along with the elements of Indian classical music, mirror both the Mughal setting of the play and Dara’s own experience.

Adapted by Tanya Ronder from Shahid Nadeem’s play, originally performed by Ajoka Theatre, Pakistan, Dara opens in the Lyttelton Theatre on 27th January 2015.

As there are no structural reinforcements needed for the Z06 Convertible, it has a nearly identical curb weight as the Z06 Coupe. They also share the same chassis tuning, powertrain output, driver technologies and equipment options - including a track-focused Z07 Performance Package.

The Z07 package adds adjustable front and rear aero components for unprecedented aerodynamic downforce, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires for enhanced grip, and Brembo carbon ceramicmatrix brake rotors that improve braking performance and contribute to greater handling through reduced unsprung weight.

The performance targets of the Z06 also posed a challenge for the design team, which had to create a striking design that also contributed to increased capabilities. The design changes began not with the exterior panels, but the tyres.

To deliver the levels of grip needed for the Z06's performance targets, the car was fitted with larger Michelin tires (Pilot Super Sport tires for the Z06; Sport Cup 2 tires with the Z07 package). The P285/30ZR19 front tires are 1.5 inches wider than the tires on the Stingray, while the 335/25ZR20 rear tires are two inches wider.

To cover the wider tyre tread, the fenders of the Z06 were extended by 2.2 inches (56 mm) at the front, and 3.15 inches (80 mm) at the rear. These extensions give the Corvette Z06 a wider, lower appearance further emphasized by a unique rear fascia.

Their open, ultralight design showcases the massive Brembo brakes, which are part of the design aesthetic: The standard Z06 features a front splitter, spats around the front wheel openings, a unique carbon-fiber hood with a larger vent, and a rear spoiler.

The exterior design also reflects the

increased cooling required for the new Corvette Z06. For example, the mesh pattern on the front fascia was painstakingly designed to deliver the most possible airflow to the supercharger's intercooler heat exchanger, so much so that the mesh grill directs more air into the engine bay than if the grille was removed.

The unique grille also features dedicated brake-cooling intakes and wider grille outlets on the bottom serve as air diffusers. The grille is complemented with a larger hood vent, which vents hot air from the engine compartment and contributes to downforce by allowing air driven through the grille to exit through the hood rather than being forced under the car, which could create lift.

Additional cooling elements include larger front fender vents and unique air blades over the inlets on the rear fenders of Coupe models, which force about 50 percent more air into the cooling ducts for the transmission and differential coolers than those on the Stingray.

Convertible models feature under-body inlets. To cope with the additional airflow, Z06 Coupe and Convertible also have larger rear-fascia openings than the Stingray.

2015 full of challenges and races for Maserati and Giovani Soldini

2015 promises to be a year packed with tough, ambitious sporting challenges for Maserati and Giovanni Soldini as they prepare to compete in prestigious races and embark on new ocean record attempts.

After two years and 60,000 miles of sea, the equivalent of two trips around the world, Maserati has re-emerged after two months in the yard for specialist maintenance work, ready and eager to get going again.

Aside from Soldini (skipper), Maserati will have a complement of 10 determined and expert crew aboard: Italians Guido Broggi (boat captain), Corrado Rossignoli (first bowman), Andrea Fantini (pitman), Francesco Malingri (media) and John Elkann (tailer and boat owner); German Boris Herrmann (navigator) ; Spaniard Oliver Herrera Perez (second bowman); Frenchman Gwen Riou, Monegasque Pierre Casiraghi and Swede Andreas Axelsson (all tailers).

Maserati’s first event of 2015 is the RORC Caribbean 600 Race, which casts off on February 23 from Antigua.

Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in collaboration with the Antigua Yacht Club, this is the seventh edition of the longest and most important race of the Caribbean season. The 605-mile route winds its way north from Antigua, leaving Barbuda, the Nevis Islands, Saba and St. Barth to starboard, then around St Martin and on down to Guadeloupe before snaking back to Antigua.

In May, Maserati is scheduled to attempt to break the San FranciscoShanghai record, which retraces the 7,000-mile route across the Pacific Ocean plied by the legendary clippers in the mid-19th century. In 1853, Swordfish, built two years before and under the command of Captain Charles Collins, established herself as the fastest ever clipper, covering the route in 32 days and 9 hours, thereby slashing two days off the record previously held by Romance of the Sea. Lastly, as the year draws to a close, Giovanni Soldini and the Maserati team will be tackling one of the world’s most famous and challenging events, the Rolex Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race, a punishing 628-nautical mile gallop in extreme conditions during which some of the world’s top boats do battle for this coveted trophy.

Staged by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and the Royal Club of Tasmania, the race was first held in 1945 when just nine competitors lined up at the start. In last year’s 70th edition there were no less 117, 93 of which made it all the way to Hobart.

The current race record belongs to the Australian yacht Wild Oats XI owned by Bob Oately, (winner of eight of the last 10 editions, 2014 included), which in 2012 sprinted the distance between Sydney and Hobart in 1 day, 18 hours, 23 seconds and 12 hundredths of a second.

There have been some truly gruelling editions of the race, including in 1998 when an exceptionally severe storm sank five boats and six lives were lost. That year, of the 115 yachts that began the race, only 44 reached Hobart.

Automobili Lamborghini has presented the new Lamborghini Huracán GT3, in a world premiere at its headquarters in Sant'Agata Bolognese.

The GT3 competitor makes its debut following that of the new Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo, which will be the protagonist of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo in Europe, Asia and North America from this year.

Starting in 2015, the Huracán GT3 will line up in the Blancpain Endurance Series that runs over five venues in Europe, among which is included the famous SpaFrancorchamps 24-hours race.

The growth and success of Lamborghini motorsports activities throughout the world has heightened its appeal Equipped with an Alu-Carbon chassis and a fully integrated FIAcompliant roll-cage, the subframe has been modified both at the front and rear to accommodate a high performance water radiator (front), and for a better positioning of the gearbox (rear), improving aerodynamics. The kerb weight is 1239 kg with a 42/58 front/rear weight distribution.

The bodywork is in composite materials and aerodynamics have been tuned to grant the best possible air flow penetration, and maximum adherence and traction in any condition on any asphalt.

Efficiency has been improved thanks to the rear adjustable wing, adjustable front diffuser and louvres. The new aerodynamics also allow improved cooling of the braking system.

As for the Huracán Super

Trofeo, the GT3 is equipped with new bodywork fast- fittings and equipped with a new, enhancedperforming engine and gearbox oil cooler.

Special attention has been given to safety, with the new Lamborghini Huracán GT3 equipped with a carbon frame seat, a fire extinguishing system and an innovative roof hatch which enables, in case of need, quick assistance by medical personnel through the roof of the car.

The new rear-wheel drive Huracán GT3 adopts the V10 direct injection engine mounted on the road car, managed by a Bosch Motorsport control unit that also manages traction control, gearbox and the TFT display on the dashboard.

The braking system is made up by 380 x 34 mm steel discs at the front (6 pot), and 355 x 32mm steel discs at the back (4 pot), according to FIA regulations, equipped with Bosch ABS. This system features 12 different settings that can be actioned directly from the steering wheel, as can traction control.

Grasser Racing Team will line up two new Huracán GT3s in the 2015 Blancpain Endurance Series.

The Austrian team - 2013 Blancpain Sprint Series Pro-Am Champion and third in the 2014 Pro Class - will field the two official test drivers of Lamborghini Squadra Corse: Fabio Babini (ITA) and Adrian Zaugg (RSA) now promoted to factory drivers, and the Italian Mirko Bortolotti who impressed in the 2014 Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Europe.

Toyota to increase production of fuel cell car Toyota says it will increase production of its Mirai fuel cell car.

The hydrogen-powered saloon was launched in Japan on 15th December last year and will be introduced in the UK and other selected European markets during 2015.

The new plan calls for production to increase from 700 units this year to approximately 2,000 in 2016 and around 3,000 in 2017.

SNEAK PREVIEW: New Toyota RND Concept Toyota is breaking with motor industry convention by revealing a new product outside the familiar surroundings of an international motor show.

Instead its new RND Concept will make its world debut in the UK on 26th January, ready for fast-track development that should see it changing the face of motoring within weeks.

Champions Crowned After an action packed season of football, which included 90 games and a total of 248 goals, the highly anticipated awards night for the 2014/15 SLUK season finally arrived last week.

Hyde Park had already clinched the championship at the start of the year, losing just two league games in the whole campaign, and finally got their hands on the championship trophy at the Hamara Centre on Thursday 29th January.

It was a convincing season for the pre-season favourites, who not only scored more goals than any other opponent, but also boasted the best defence, conceding just seven goals in 18 games.

toppers was Tyler Bussue who rounded off his season on the final matchday in the perfect way, hitting a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Half a Dozen.

His performances throughout the season have been a benchmark for the rest of his team and he was individually awarded on Thursday with the Player of the Tournament award.

Despite leading the team scoring charts, the individual golden boot award went to Borussia Teeth’s

Hamza Ismail who fired in 25 goals.

His partnership with Haseeb Ahmed – who bagged 16 of his own, was the deadliest in the division and helped his side secure fourth spot.

Every sport needs good rivalries to spice things up and keep the viewers interested and this is much needed to generate revenue, increased pay per view numbers, sell tickets and keep the sport alive.

On a personal note I do not follow sports like football, tennis or cricket as passionately as I do boxing or combat sports, but I will always watch the Manchester United v Liverpool game, Roger Federer v Rafael Nadal and Pakistan v India due to the rivalries between the competitors and the expected viewing pleasure.

The boxing rivalries over the years have produced intensity, passion, power and entertainment and it is usually the best matched against the best, evenly matched competitors who are ready to explode and fight to the end in order to gain victory over their opponent.

I recall some of the great rivalries of boxing: Thomas Hearns v Sugar ray Leonard where it was power against the technically gifted. Marco Antonio Berrera v Erik Morales that was a boxing display of sheer will and war from the opening bell. Arturo Gatti v Mickey Ward where it was the battle of greatest hearts and bravery ever shown in a boxing ring and Muhammed Ali v Joe Frazier where it was rivalry fuelled by Ali’s

taunts and probably the greatest and world renown rivalry of them all with two fighters literally giving it their all every minute of every round.

On Saturday night we saw the third fight between two great rivals, Mike Alvarado v Brandon Rios that promised to deliver fireworks from the opening bell based on their previous two epic fights.

However on this occasion the third fight between Alvarado v Rios failed to deliver the fight action that was expected probably due to Alvarado’s lack of focus during training camp.

The trilogy fight between the two rivals ended with a disappointment to say the least but that is what happens sometimes in the sport of boxing especially when two fighters have previously fallen short against top ranked fighters as Alvarado v Rios have.

Rios won this fight and was clearly the more improved and determined fighter who boxed with vicious combinations from the opening bell until the third round when he managed to literally beat Alvarado into submission.

The promoter of the Alvarado v Rios bout has confirmed that despite the fight ending on a negative note the fight drew a huge 1.315 million viewers on HBO television.

In my view the Alvarado v Rios bout was never going to match the great rivalries of the past, but what it does prove is that great rivalries will always generate more viewing interest irrelevant of the fighter’s fighting records, fighting ability or how the bout may actually finish.

I just hope the next boxing rivalry is more entertaining and manages to end on a more positive note.

The race to be named as world football’s highest ranking official will be contested by seven men this year with current president Sepp Blatter, looking to cement his fifth term in the role.

Standing in his way, are Frenchman Jérôme Champagne, Dutch football chief Michael van Praag, former world player of the year Luis Figo and, for the time being, former Tottenham player David Ginola.

Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein from the Asian federation, is the final man nominated for the position, and received the backing from England’s Football Association last week.

FA chairman Greg Dyke speaking after an FA board meeting, said: “The board discussed the upcoming FIFA presidency election and the welcome proliferation of candidates in the race.

“We agreed to formally nominate Prince Ali of the Jordanian FA but also noted the encouraging reform

message being offered by Michael van Praag.

“We will now await FIFA's final confirmation of the candidates and look forward to assessing the manifestos of all who are entered into the election on 29th May. “We have said for a long time that a new approach is essential within FIFA. I welcome the chance for a considered debate in the weeks ahead before we decide where the FA casts its vote."

It is the first time since Blatter came to presidency in 1998 that he will face a credible challenge for his seat.

However, Prince Ali, and his fellow candidates, will face a tough battle to beat the 78-year-old Swiss, who was a director on the board before the Arab prince was even born.

The election will take place at the FIFA Congress in Zurich later this year and is a onemember one-vote process with an outright winner needing twothirds of the 209 votes cast.

Force India reveal latest motors in preparation for Spain

Sahara Force India launched its 2015 season last week by offering fans and media a first impression of how their new car will look when it makes its track debut this month.

It was during a spectacular event at the Soumaya museum in Mexico City, that drivers Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg pulled back the covers to reveal the team’s fresh new look for 2015.

The new VJM08 livery is guaranteed to get heads turning.

The chassis features an elegant combination of silver and black with the team’s traditional colour of orange streaking from the nose cone to the rear of the car in two symmetrical curves.

Key to the new livery is the introduction of several commercial partners for 2015, as well as retaining longstanding partnerships with companies around the world.

Team Principal, Dr Vijay Mallya, was the first to praise the team’s new livery, labelling the look an ‘evolution’ from 2014. “[The new look] reflects the growth of the team and the global brands with which we are

working,” he said.

“I love the addition of silver, which makes the car appear more sleek and aggressive and I’m sure it’s something that will appeal to the fans as well. Our traditional team colours remain integrated in the livery, but we’ve given it a very modern twist.”

With relatively stable technical regulations, the VJM08 has been designed with evolution rather than revolution in mind.

The most significant changes from the outside will appear at the front of the car with the lowering of the front of the chassis and nose.

“The front of the car looks very different from what we had developed previously,” explains Technical Director Andrew Green.

“It is a redesign that involved a lot of work over the winter, as the new regulations caused a loss in terms of downforce and we’ve been working to claw back all that performance.”

The car will also feature several subtle changes, including modified sculpting of the sidepods and new cooling intakes. Underneath the skin there will be a completely new rear suspension layout with a new hydro-mechanical system replacing the original torsion springs.

Perez and Hulkenberg are expected to give the VJM08 its track testing debut in Barcelona this month.

“He is the closest thing I have seen to Naseem Hamed for a long time, and is capable of reaching the very top of the sport.

“There is no saying how far he can go. I wouldn’t even rule out a Vegas bout one day.”

He has since continued to defeat all challengers and is determined to continue his dominant form in 2015.

A promising boxer from Reading is being tipped to ‘headline Vegas one day’ as he continues to clean up the local middleweight division.

20-year-old Faraz Akram currently competes in the Queensbury Boxing League, where he has an unbeaten record of four wins, from four bouts.

Training out of Camberley Boxing Club, the heavy hitter has quickly falsified the myth, that in order to fight at a professional standard, a boxer must have an amateur background behind him.
