Volunteers take to the streets of Leeds to help cater for the less fortunate

Young Muslims come together to ‘Feed the Homeless’ By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Every Friday evening during Ramadhan, when the vast majority of the Muslim community are breaking fast in the comparative luxury of their homes or in the Mosques, a group of Young Muslim Volunteers are in Leeds City Centre distributing food to those who face hunger on a continuing basis. ‘Leeds with the Homeless’ was set up a year ago by a group of

young Muslim volunteers who, even outside Ramadhan, come together every month to distribute free food to the homeless. Recognising that there are over 2,300 homeless people in Leeds alone, the group set up the project to give back to the community and demonstrate the real essence of Islam.

As a contestant on a game show, you may have your hopes up to walk away with a new car, mobile phone or a fist full of cash... How about taking a baby home? Pakistani programme, Aman Ramazan, has been giving away abandoned children to unsuspecting infertile couples over the month of Ramadan and has sparked discussion and controversy worldwide. Aamir Liaquat Hussain, presenter of the programme, has defended the show’s actions despite it being labelled by some as ‘unethical’ and ‘just a publicity stunt’ used during the holy month, when TV stations battle for ratings. Hussain, one of Pakistan’s biggest TV personalities, is

currently broadcasting a 12-hour show each day gaining millions of viewers across the country. Couples on the show, as contestants, were asked questions about the Quran which they had to answer correctly in order to win a child. So far two girls and a boy have been given to unsuspecting parents. Hussain denies that his actions are solely to boost viewing figures, and also denies they are trivialising the worldwide issue of abandoned children. He told CNN: “We've created a symbol of peace and love, that's our show's theme - to spread love. “I'm setting an example - giving a childless couple an abandoned child. It's not commercialisation, it's not showbiz. It's real Islam.” The show is working with Karachi-based nongovernmental organisation Chhipa Welfare Association, which receives up to

15 infants a month from parents who are unable or unwilling to care for them. In 2009, UNICEF estimated there to be over 4.2 million orphan children living in Pakistan, and most go on to become street children. The couples were allegedly informed by producers the day before the programme was broadcast that they would be given a child on-air the next day, after previously completing an application process and registering their interest in adoption with the Chhipa Welfare Association. Checks were carried out over two weeks on the couples’ incomes, medical history, and housing, and there were checks with the local police, and in their respective communities. Ramzan Chhipa is director of the non-profit organisation and

Babies given as prizes on Pakistani TV show told CNN: “Our team finds babies abandoned on the street, in garbage bins - some of them dead, others mauled by animals. So why not ensure the baby is kept alive and gets a good home? “We didn’t just give the baby away. We have our own vetting procedure. This couple was already registered with us and had four or five sessions with us.” The association’s Facebook page has been met with mixed reactions, with the majority praising the initiative. Many users wrote ‘Well done’, ‘Good work’ and ‘MashaAllah’, meaning ‘God has willed it’. One supporter of the programme wrote: “Sharing these photos and stories educates the world about childrens' welfare and situations throughout the world,” whilst another added: “It can also lead to adoptions of children in need of loving parents. So it’s not all bad.” However, not everybody is as welcoming of the show with one disgruntled Facebook user writing: “Children are not things. This is ethically wrong. In Europe the parents are checked for at least one year till a child is given to them. I am shocked and disgusted.” Pakistani and Islamic law does not officially recognise adoption, so once the contestants have been gifted a child they have to apply for guardianship rights themselves after the programme through a family court. One of the couples on the show have been married for 17 years but have been unable to conceive naturally in that time.

Said Zulfiqar Hussain, a policeman from Karachi, together with his wife, Soreya Bilqees, was given a baby girl, Sayeda Zeinab, on the show last week. He said: “I cannot express in words our happiness. There was a great void in our life and that is filled by having this baby.” Bilgees added: “I was really shocked at first. I couldn't believe we were being given this baby girl, I was extremely happy. “My life is complete now because of her, I can't describe how happy I am because someone will grow up and call me mother. She is the light of my home.” Zama Coursen-Neff, a children's-rights expert with Human Rights Watch, said she wasn’t familiar with Chhipa Welfare Association but believes that their actions, together with

Aman Ramazan, will be beneficial to vulnerable children, whether or not the story is sensationalised in the press. She told Yahoo!: “I think probably what triggers the gut response for people is that, on its face, giving a baby away on a game show doesn't sound like a process of careful determination of what's in a child's best interest. “Getting children out of institutions and into families who will provide good care for them is critical.” Over the past few weeks Aman Ramazan, broadcast by Geo, has broken ratings records and the show may be extended beyond Ramadan. Hussain is also planning another programme which is set to be more inclusive of a wider audience, including the Hindu, Sikh and Christian communities.

Demolition Order for Walker Welfare building

Kirklees Council has posted a formal notice on the former Walker Welfare Centre on Edge Lane in Thornhill, Dewsbury, marking the next step in its application to obtain a demolition order for the building, which surveyors deem to be unsafe and beyond economic repair. The building was vacated in 2007 due to concerns about the state of its repair. It was previously scheduled for demolition in 2008, but after objections was handed to a community group who were given £100,000 towards its refurbishment. No work was done to the building and it has remained unoccupied ever since, and was handed back to Kirklees Council two weeks ago. Demolition is expected to take place in around 28 days’ time once an order has been granted, although could be carried out sooner under emergency powers if the building deteriorates any further, or the existing security of the site is breached.

Huddersfield entrepreneurs through to final

Budding entrepreneurs from Huddersfield are celebrating after making it through to the final of a national competition. Huddersfield based Mimo Chocolate has been short listed to the final stage of the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF) First Pitch scheme supported by Kirklees Council. Founded in March by Jan Miller and Phil Morgan, Mimo Chocolate is the realisation of a passion for chocolate and a new career direction. ‘We both had an interest in experimenting in the kitchen and a passion for chocolate so we decided to retrain as chocolatiers and fulfil a dream to start our own business.’ said Jan. As finalists, they will benefit from a rental incentive with Kirklees Council as well as receiving one years’ free membership of the NMTF and a business mentor.

Young Muslims come together to ‘Feed the Homeless’

FRONT COVER STORY

Co-founder of the project, Adil Hussain, who is also heavily involved with the ‘Give a Gift’ initiative - which aims to collect toys over Ramadan and distribute them to children in the Leeds heart unit, explains why this project is so important. He said: “Charity is a fundamental part of Islam and so we wanted to give something back to the community and what better way than feeding the homeless. “By coming together every month in this way, we not only give the homeless a meal but we enable them to feel a part of society again. “As one of the beneficiaries said, ‘when I come to this project, I don’t only come for the food. I come to talk to people as well which makes me feel part of humanity again’.” During the event, the group of young Muslim

Classical Fantasia set to light up the abbey

Following a memorable evening at Temple Newsam Park last month for Opera in the Park, tickets are now available for another popular concert in the city’s calendar, Classical Fantasia. Organised by Leeds City Council, this year’s event will again take place at Kirkstall Abbey on Saturday 7th September with gates scheduled to open from 6pm. The main performance will begin from approximately 8pm. Set in the grounds of the 12th century abbey, the open-air classical music performance will feature a widerange of fantasy-inspired music to delight the crowd. As part of the show, the spectacular ruins of the abbey will again be illuminated and also include a fantastic firework finale. This year the music will be performed by the Manchester Camerata - one of the UK’s leading chamber orchestras. volunteers observed their prayer time in the centre of Leeds. Tens of people, men and women, took part in the prayers simultaneously and Adil believes this public display of faith helped spread a peaceful message of Islam to the onlooking public. “It was absolutely amazing to be praying outside like that,” he said. “People were intrigued by what we were doing and were then approaching us to talk about the events which was great.” The project has also witnessed an added bonus in uniting diverse members of the community through attracting a varied range of participants including community groups, Churches and mosques. Farhan Khan, who also helped found the project, summed up the feelings of many of his colleagues when describing the event. He said: “I feel blessed to be in a position to actively participate in this great project that not only directly benefits those in our community who are less fortunate than us, but also unites people from different faiths and backgrounds who come together for this great cause." Leeds dementiaawareness

Senior National Health Service and social care leaders in Leeds were given an insight into the issues surrounding dementia at an awareness session last week. Members of the council’s health and wellbeing board undertook training run by the Alzheimer’s Society to find out more about what it is like to live with dementia and how as a city Leeds can create a dementia friendly society. A combination of workshops and scenarios were undertaken to aid the board in understanding issues surrounding dementia in Leeds, the stigma attached to the condition, and the experiences of somebody living with dementia. At the end of the session the board agreed to become ‘dementia friends’, further reinforcing the commitment made in May when the members formally endorsed the Leeds ‘Living Well with Dementia’ strategy as part of the aim for Leeds to become a dementia-friendly city. Baroness Warsi welcomes campaign on women’s rights in Afghanistan Baroness Warsi has underlined UK support for work to promote women’s rights in Afghanistan during a meeting with young Amnesty activists. Foreign Office Senior Minister, Baroness Warsi, has met young activists from Amnesty UK to discuss women’s rights in Afghanistan and the essential role of women in building a more stable and prosperous future for their country. The Minister received a petition from Amnesty and Gender Action for Peace and Security calling on the UK to continue its support to Afghan women. Welcoming the petition, the Minister praised the work of civil society organisations in protecting and promoting the rights of Afghan women, and reaffirmed the UK’s long-term commitment to working with them, the Afghan Government and other partners, to improve the role and status of women and girls in Afghanistan. Baroness Warsi said: “I am proud that the young people of Britain are standing side-by-side with young Afghans to demand an equal role for women in Afghan society. Organisations such as Amnesty are doing outstanding work to ensure that the voices of Afghan women will never again be pushed into the background. “The UK remains absolutely committed to Afghanistan, and this commitment will continue

after 2014 when our combat forces leave. Our work will go on supporting Afghan women and girls as they tackle the challenges and opportunities ahead. Women can and must play a crucial role in building the Afghanistan of the future.” The discussions highlighted the difficulties faced by many women in Afghanistan including a high level of violence. Baroness Warsi noted the challenges of tackling these given the deeply conservative culture in many parts of the country. She reiterated the importance the UK attaches to encouraging the Afghan Government to uphold its commitments on women’s rights, including through the implementation of the Elimination of Violence against Women law. Baroness Warsi said: “Tackling violence and discrimination against women and girls is essential for a stable and peaceful Afghanistan, for building a stronger economy and a fairer society. Afghan women must be allowed to play their full part in Afghan public and political life, including as voters and candidates in the elections in April next year. “Women’s political participation gives voice to a marginalised section of society, enables women to shape the decisions that affect their lives and will ultimately secure the sort of future for Afghanistan that its people deserve.”

Leeds foster care leaflet criticised Fostering organisation come under fire for suggesting people foster to avoid paying the bedroom tax

Fostering organisation Parallel Parenting have been criticised after distributing leaflets encouraging bedroom tax avoidance by giving a child a home. The leaflets, which were distributed to council house tenants throughout Leeds, said, “Avoid the bedroom tax. Help change a child’s life. Become a foster carer.” In a recent statement after the backlash, the company said, “[the leaflet was] just one recruitment strategy, a way of encouraging people to become foster parents.” UK foster carers are exempt from the bedroom tax and will continue to receive rent payments towards “an additional room” as long as they have become an approved foster carer in the past 12 months or have fostered a child according to new government guidelines.

Susan Stacey, a foster carer from Bradford, told the BBC that she was “appalled” when she saw the leaflet. She said, “If anyone thinks that foster care is about filling a bedroom they are badly advised - it is the most stressful and yet the most rewarding thing l have ever done in my life, where the child always comes first. "If l worked for the agency involved l would seriously consider looking for another agency, as their recruitment policy is well and truly appalling." A statement by the British Association for Adoption and Fostering also explained that applicants can only be approved as foster carers if they "fully appreciate they are providing a child-focused service". It said, "If financial gain was the sole motivation the applicant would not be approved."

Sports Centre to benefit from new state-of-the-art pitch

Bradford’s longest established sports centre will benefit from a new state of the art 3G synthetic pitch thanks to a partnership between Bradford Council’s Sport and Leisure Service and Thornton Grammar School. The existing artificial outdoor football pitch at Thornton Recreation Centre is being resurfaced with new third generation synthetic grass which is more realistic than the Astroturf and much safer with a softer rubber infill. These new type of pitches offer more protection and impact absorption, while the longer grass-like fibres possess many characteristics of grass during play, providing better ball control with less risk of injury. The pitch will open for bookings from September 2013 and opening times will be 6pm-10pm MondayFriday, 9am-6pm Saturdays and 9am4pm Sundays.

Bradford woman slams ‘police system’ following hate crime DUMPED: Four pig heads were found around the family home in Bradford

‘This type of attack falls way below their list of priorities’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A family in Bradford, who were subject to a race hate crime in June, have spoken out about their disappointment of how the case has been handled by local authorities. Sophia Ditta, 34, has lived with her family in the Bolton area of Bradford all her life and had never been victim to such a crime before. However, on Friday 14th June, the family awoke to find pig’s heads scattered around the house, in what she believes was a racially provoked attack following the killing of Lee Rigby in London, the previous month. As a Muslim household, pork is a forbidden food and therefore this incident was viewed as a racist attack. Upon reporting the crime to the local authorities, the family was told to preserve the heads as to allow the forensic team to analyse the objects, yet due to their decomposed state, this process was not feasible. Sophia states that she believes the police handled the case poorly as they failed to fulfill their roles in serving the public. Writing on her blog, she said: “The police, although sympathetic have not been very helpful. They told us it was an isolated incident; they had no record of this happening anywhere else in our area and have not seen a rise in racist attacks in Bradford ‘postWoolwich’. “We were then informed that it would be our responsibility to dispose of the pig heads. As for us having to preserve them; and led to believe the police would be taking them away, we were told (paraphrasing): ‘I don’t know who was watching

CSI at the time but there’s nothing we can do about taking them away, and this isn’t classed as a crime, it’s a hate incident, and we just don’t have the resources to take them and send them back and await results of DNA tests, they are so decomposed I don’t even think we can get any testing done.’ “With it being the weekend, the council offices were closed. We did not want the pigs decomposing on our property any longer and were advised to burn them.” The family was left to destroy the four pig heads on their own accord, and did so via an incinerator. After 11 days of burning, the pigs finally decomposed completely, and despite no news from the police regarding other attacks in the area, a neighbour explained how he had a similar incident just two weeks prior. Sophia continued: “Our neighbour was horrified, he had not heard from the police about our incident…and he’d reported his incident to the same police station. “So we were not alone. There was no doubt now this was a racist attack. This could be happening across Bradford, but the police are not telling us. “I’m disappointed with the police’s systemic reaction to this level of racial harassment. The officers were sympathetic, but they clearly have a lack of resources to do anything. This type of attack falls way below their list of priorities. “I don’t blame any of the officers; I blame the systems they are being forced to work to.” Sophia now wants more people to come forward and not be afraid to speak out if they have been victimised in hope of forcing the police to ‘start taking these crimes seriously’.

“I’m disappointed with the police’s systemic reaction to this level of racial harassment. The officers were sympathetic, but they clearly have a lack of resources to do anything. This type of attack falls way below their list of priorities.”

DESTROYED: The heads took 11 days to decompose completely in an incinerator

‘Catastrophic’ consequences for M62 negligence

Drivers are being warned to take note of the new road signs on the M62, or face the threat of large fines and points on their licenses. Reports of drivers using the hard shoulder, which acts as an extra lane during peak times, have been met with £60 fines and three points on the culprit’s licence. Inspector Dave Peach, from the West Yorkshire Police, warned motorists: “The consequences of not complying with [signs] could be catastrophic. “Red Xs will be used when we do not want people on the hard shoulder or indeed other running lanes.” The £136m scheme to create managed motorway between junctions 25 and 30 near Wakefield is expected to be completed by October 2013. Currently, only the hard shoulder between junctions 25-Brighouse and 26-Chain Bar, will be in use as an additional lane on a permanent basis. Highways Agency project manager, David Pilsworth, believes many incidents may occur simply

by accident, yet with strict regulations in place, he urges drivers not to risk driving under a ‘red X’. He said: “Some of the hard shoulder misuse reported to us by the police, and observed by our traffic officers on the ground, could be an honest mistake because drivers are under the impression that the hard shoulder is available to traffic at all times. “However, I suspect there could also be a lot of wilful ignorance, even if motorists aren’t necessarily aware that they are breaking the law.”

Investment! Bradford Bulls owner puts hand in pocket to keep club running

By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The future of Bradford Bulls is once again safe after owner, Omar Khan, invested capital from his own property portfolio to enable the club to run smoothly for the next 18 months. Mr Khan, who bought the club last year for £120,000, reassured fans that the club will not be entering administration again after he invested, a reported, £900,000 into the West Yorkshire outfit. On Wednesday 31st July, Mr Khan released a statement denying rumours the club was going into administration after revealing a “temporary funding issue” meant it could not pay players and staff until

the 8th August. In a statement released on the club website, Mr Khan said: “I would like to dispel all rumours and confirm that the club is NOT going into administration but as I have always taken the approach of open transparency I will say that we are at this time experiencing a temporary funding issue and as such it transpires that we will not be able to pay the wages until Wednesday7th August.” He added: “I’m releasing equity in my properties and putting the money into the club. “I am doing this for the club and the city of Bradford. It is a place I love. It is my heritage. It is the city I’ve been brought up in. This is our city and our club.” General Manager of the club, Ryan Whitcut, added that the money

CHAIRMAN: Omar Khan has invested almost £1million to keep his Super League club afloat

would cover the club’s running costs past 2014. Blake Solly, director of licensing and standards at the RFL, said the game’s governing body would continue to work closely with the Bulls and did not believe it was a repeat of last year’s financial crisis. “This financial injection will give the Bulls funding that is much needed and will provide them with reserves of cash that gives a platform to build on,” he added. “We are comfortable with their position and that this money will drop into place to ensure players, and staff, are paid on or before August 8th.”

The small town of Todmorden is beginning to gain an unwanted reputation as a flooding hotspot as nearby village, Walsden, was once again subject to flooding last week. Just over 12 months since the Prime Minister paid a visit to the area, after a severe downpour had caused mass damage in 2012, the West Yorkshire town fell victim to the weather once again. 18 inches (46cm) of rain submerged the area over one night last week, with clean up operations now in full force to rid the area of the mucky flood waters. Unlike last year’s events, the rain did not occur over two to three days but rather within a few hours. Liberal Democrat councillor for Todmorden Central Ward, Abid Hussain, narrowly avoided the flood waters this year yet explained how nearby Walsden was not as lucky. He said: “The result may not be as bad as last year but it has still caused significant damage to different parts of the area. “It missed my house, on Halifax Road, Todmorden, by inches this time around, it just stopped short, just. “It was in Walsden where the worst damage was and it just came down so fast this time, unlike last year when we had two or three days of it. “Operations are underway to clear the waters but we have to stay alert with the threat of more showers.” At least 20 homes were submerged by the water and Flood warden Keith Crabtree stated that there was an ‘unprecedented’ amount of rainfall which caused ‘sheer devastation’ in the village. Flood water poured down the streets as a cloudburst ripped up tarmac and destroyed roads through the area. During the flooding, railway lines were submerged and Walsden railway station was closed for several hours as maintenance crews repaired the tracks. Flood alerts for Todmorden and Walsden have now been lifted yet the Environment Agency warns residents to continue to monitor local forecasts. Teams have been working to prevent any further flooding by clearing debris from streams and unblocking culverts, a spokesman added. People in the region are still struggling to recover from last year's severe flooding, which caused more than £3m of damage.

Leeds Train Station tops list by having highest number of injuries Statistic said to be caused by Leeds’ nightlife scene and drunken revellers losing their balance By Sally Thurrell sally@asianexpress.co.uk

Leeds train station has topped a national list to become the station with the highest number of injuries over the past year. The city’s busy nightlife scene is said to be partially to blame for the high number of people being hurt tripping in the station, falling down stairs and falling off platforms. Injuries included cuts, bruises and fractures. Network Rail have said that most incidents occurred in Leeds when people lost their balance after being out drinking in the city. Over the past 12 months Leeds saw 179 accidents within the station, followed by London Paddington with 177 and London Liverpool Street with 135. Nationally across Network Rail’s 17 managed stations the toll consists of, one fatality, 51 bone fractures, 19 dislocations, five concussions and

passengers to be more careful, especially after drinking alcohol. Dyan Crowther, Network Rail route managing director, said: “We do everything we can to make moving around our stations as easy dozens of bruises, cuts and abrasions and safe as possible but our teams as people have fallen on steps and deal with far too many people who escalators, over luggage and even off have injured themselves where it appears alcohol has been a factor. platforms between trains. Commuters using the station said they believed the main offenders to be football supporters, students and groups out for hen and stag parties. Ahmed Abdalla, 20, told the BBC: "It's the city centre, people are drunk everywhere. From the afternoon they start, early drinking, partying all the time. "They should be more careful, it's stupid. They're putting themselves and people around them at risk. It's mostly young college boys, uni boys, and girls sometimes." Ifor Russell, 79, from Pudsey fell down a station escalator five years ago when another user pushed the emergency stop button. He said catching a train is “one big mad rush” and that he’s been nervous to use the station since. TRAINS: Network Rail route Network Rail has since launched managing director, Dyan Crowther a digital and poster campaign to promote train safety and encourage

“We want people to enjoy their evenings and get home safe. The only thing I want to see fall is the number of incidents, so hopefully the campaign will be a gentle reminder for people to take extra care as they travel home through our stations.” British Transport Police Deputy Chief Constable Paul Crowther said:

“Somewhat inevitably, drinking alcohol can impair people’s judgement and coordination. “Encouraging passengers to be more aware of their surroundings, particularly when they have had a drink, and to be alert to the inherent dangers that exist in stations will, we hope, reduce avoidable slips and falls across the network.”

The Keighley Town Centre Conservation Area Assessment has been reviewed as part of the Keighley Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI). The previous assessment, carried out in 2007, has been updated to reflect changes in the condition of buildings and streets within the conservation area. Any loss of historic details have been recorded, and a management plan has been produced to address any issues within the area. The boundary has been assessed and no changes are proposed. The Keighley Town Centre Conservation Area is an important part of our national heritage as it clearly demonstrates the impact of the textile industry in West Yorkshire.

FROZEN: The ‘Llullaillaco Maiden’ has helped Bradford’s scientists uncover more truths about the Inca Capacocha (child sacrifice) ritual. Image courtesy of Johan Reinhard

The long and tightly-braided hair of a 13-year-old child, whose frozen body was found near the summit of a South American mountain, has provided local researchers new insights into the Inca ‘Capacocha’ ritual. Three children were discovered at the burial site, at the Volcan Llullaillaco, in 1999, yet research carried out last week, by University of Bradford scientists, has revealed more information about the build up to the children’s sacrifice. The team – from Bradford’s Department of Archaeological Sciences – carried out biochemical analysis of the girl’s hair to determine what she was eating and drinking in the months before her death. Their latest findings – published online last week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) - show the extent to which drugs and alcohol were used as part of the Inca ritual and in the final months and weeks of her life. The ‘Llullaillaco Maiden’, named after the mountain where she was found, was buried 500 years ago just below the 6,739m summit. Two other younger children, a 6-year old girl and 7year old boy were found in separate graves near the Maiden. The children had enough hair to enable the scientists to investigate their final months, as lead researcher Dr Andrew Wilson explains: “Hair grows around 1cm a

month and, once formed, doesn’t undergo any further alterations,” says Dr Wilson. “Substances such as cocaine and alcohol leave markers which can tell us how much the person was consuming when that section of hair was growing. From the Maiden’s hair, we have a two-year timeline running up to her death, showing us some of what she ate and drank.” The scientists looked for three markers in the hair: two which showed consumption of cocaine from coca leaves and one which showed consumption of coca and alcohol together. Dr Wilson has compared the team’s findings with historical accounts produced by the Spanish, dating from the Colonial period, to draw conclusions from the data: “We think it’s likely the Maiden was selected for sacrifice 12 months before her death, after which her treatment changed, corresponding to the sharp increase in coca consumption. “She was then probably involved in a series of rituals, involving consumption of coca and alcohol, in the build up to her sacrifice, which kept consumption at a steady level. Both substances were controlled, were considered elite products and held ritual significance for the Inca. “At the altitude the children were found, death by exposure is inevitable. There was no evidence of physical violence to the children, but the coca and alcohol are likely to have hastened their

deaths. The fact that in her final weeks the Maiden shows consistently higher levels of coca and alcohol use compared to the younger children, suggests there was a greater need to sedate her in the final weeks of life.” The team’s conclusions are confirmed by the position in which the Maiden was found, seated cross-legged, with her head slumped forward and her arms resting loosely on her lap, her headdress intact and the artefacts around her undisturbed. The researchers believe she was placed in the burial chamber whilst heavily sedated, her position carefully arranged and the artefacts placed around her. Re-examination of CT data of her stomach contents by researchers at the University of Copenhagen show that she had eaten a meal just two to seven hours before she died. “From later Colonial period accounts we have indications that children, often as young as four years old, and ‘acllas’, or chosen women selected around puberty, were donated for sacrifice by their parents and from communities which were under control of the Inca empire,” says Dr Wilson. “One account suggests that this was an honour and that no sadness could be shown when the children were gifted, but the significance of these transactions as a mechanism of social control must have created a climate of fear amongst such communities.”

Getting fit this summer By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Want to shred a few pounds this summer or just tone up the ‘beach bod’? Well look no further than Huddersfield’s own Shanwaz ‘Dody’ Ahmed for tips and advice on how to get that perfect physique. After reaching a peak weight of over 18 stone last year, the Huddersfield born fitness enthusiast decided it was time to get into shape. “I couldn’t even go into town unless I had a big jumper and some tracksuit bottoms on,” he said. “I was trying to almost look like a body builder by wearing baggy clothes but deep down inside I knew I was overweight. “It was one morning when I was laying in

bed and I felt the fat on the side of my waist and I just decided then, it’s time for a change.” Since that day, the 32-year-old has cut his 114kg frame down to a competition weight of 67kg, and an off-season weight of a healthy 76kg. Through a dedicated gym programme and healthy eating, Shanwaz shred his weight and now feels happier and healthier than ever before. The father of four proved it is possible to still be a Dad to his children and get into the body building shape. Offering advice he said: “The secret weapon for me is broccoli. It is full of fibre and has natural enzymes which help reduce the fat in your body; I have it with everything nowadays. “For the muscles, I have two protein shakes a day, one in the morning and one post-workout, whilst a strong black coffee is the perfect thing for before the gym. It is a natural thermogenic meaning it will give you that drive and push when you’re training.”

WEIGHT-LOSS: Shanwaz Ahmed lost seven stone to compete in the Yorkshire National Physique Championships

He adds: “If you can get a good gym partner as well that is always key to ensuring you are pushed as far as you can go. It is much easier to push yourself when somebody is training with you. “I had a fantastic partner, Faisal Naeem, during my preparation for the competition and would not have been able to get the podium finish had it not been for him.” Shanwaz explains how family can also play a key role in helping to motivate you on the quest to a healthy lifestyle. “My wife has played a massive part, supporting me phenomenally. My family have had to put up with me at times – I was having mood swings because I was on carb depletion, but my wife put up with everything. “Three days out I was going to pull out but my wife forced me to keep going and really urged me on. “My kids are also fantastic. There’s Raheem (10), Rayhan (6), Rumaan (4), and Ruqaya (8 months), I love them all and could not have done it without them.”

Teen pregnancies halved in city

Bradford Council’s Executive member for children and young people’s services, Coun Ralph Berry

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Bradford Council has achieved a key Government target by helping to halve the rate of teenage pregnancies in the district. Only nine per cent of local authorities in England have reached the national objective set in 1999 and Bradford is the first in West Yorkshire to achieve it. A partnership approach, involving Bradford’s education, public health and third sector organisations, has helped reduce the number of conceptions each year by around 270 pregnancies. Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services, Coun Ralph Berry, said: “We’ve been working hard to cut the number of teenage pregnancies and over the last five years the rate has fallen by almost 40 per cent. “12 years ago Bradford’s teenage pregnancy rate was significantly above the national average. Now we are below the national average and one of a handful of local authorities to have halved their pregnancy rate.”

Local council become first West Yorkshire authority to achieve the nationwide target Ralph Saunders, Head of Public Health for Bradford Council, added: “It’s not just a case of educating teenagers about the affects of getting pregnant at a young age. “Everybody needs to get involved – whether they are parents, teachers, health workers or carers – so that young people can have the confidence to have open and upfront discussions and make the right choices.” Some of the schemes in operation in the Bradford area include: • The development of dedicated young people’s sexual health clinics with ‘You’re Welcome’ accreditation • A whole-school approach to relationships and sex education with the development of the Ur Choice programme and help targeted at teenagers’ parents • Speakeasy programme teaches parents and carers how to talk to their children about relationships and sex, which builds skills, knowledge and

confidence • Development of family nurse partnership (FNP) and teenage pregnancy midwife service to support teenage parents and reduce subsequent teenage conceptions • Free emergency hormonal contraception (EHC) available from pharmacists across the district. In 1999, the Government launched a 10-year national teenage pregnancy prevention strategy for England to halve under-18 conception rates. The latest figures show the rate of conceptions per 1,000 15 to 17-year-old girls in Bradford has fallen from 57.2 per 1,000 in 1998 to 28.4 in 2011.

Bradford welcome cyclists to city centre for day of riding

SkyBradford Ride By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The 2013 Sky Ride Bradford is just around the corner and the city’s public are being urged to jump on their bikes and cycle this weekend as part of the nationwide initiative. Sky Ride is a free mass participation cycling event that offers something for everyone and will be landing in Bradford on Sunday 11th August marking its fourth year. Once again the event will offer people of all ages and abilities the chance to get in the saddle and enjoy a traffic-free circular route between two multi-award winning parks - City Park and Lister Park, in Manningham. But there will also be other activities and entertainment in the parks such as the Council's hugely popular climbing tower, zorbs to roll around in, giant games, penalty shoot-outs and live bands as well as street entertainers to keep every person happy. Of particular interest this year will be the chance to see either

Bradley Wiggins or Chris Froome's time trial bikes and the Team Sky Jaguar car that follows the riders on the Tour de France tour. Chris Froome has of course this year repeated Wiggins' spectacular achievement in winning the Tour de France and with less than a year to go until the Grand Depart arrives on Yorkshire’s own doorstep, there is no better time to get a taste of what is to come in 2014. Coun Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council's Executive Member for Environment and Sport, said: “Bradford SkyRide is going to give a foretaste of what is to come in 2014 when the Tour de France comes through our district. “Cycling is getting more and more popular and people really enjoy the opportunity to get on their bikes with their family and friends on a route where they don't have to worry about the traffic.”

Youngsters will also be interested in the opportunity to once again race their bikes in the Go Ride racing event - British Cycling's exciting entry-level competition programme which helps novice cyclists under the age of 16 compete with each other. The races, which will be held throughout the day from 11am to 3.30pm, are all free. And for a different kind of challenge there is the Watt bike challenge in which participants can race their friends and family on static bikes connected to a screen. These bikes are used by Team Sky as part of their training programme. A range of bikes will be available for hire from Bradford's Youth Service and Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure (BDSL) who will also be helping to ensure the event is accessible for everyone.

RIDE: Cyclists ride through the fountains in City Park at last year’s event If you need an adapted bike for the event, please contact BDSL representative Dean Carroll, on bsr@btconnect.com. West Yorkshire Metro's Go:cycling project will be running a free prize draw for a Merida Hybrid bike in their go:cycling tent which will be located in City Park.

Fine for bin obstruction

A Wetherby woman has been fined for persistently leaving her bin out and causing an obstruction to pedestrians. Responding to annoyed residents’ requests for help, council staff made several attempts to get Rebecca Wright, St James Street, to move and store the offending bin. Failing to act resulted in magistrates fining Wright £75 fine and ordering her to pay £568.47 in costs earlier this month. Local residents complained throughout 2012 about a wheeled bin regularly being left on the street. As well as being an obstruction to local residents, the pavement leads to the busy and popular town centre and must be safe and accessible for prams, the elderly and people with a disability or visual impairment.

Are you private fostering?

People who are looking after a child who is not a direct relative are being urged to let Leeds City Council know about the arrangement. When someone looks after a child or young person who is not a direct relative it is called private fostering. It is important Leeds City Council is aware of these arrangements to ensure the safety and well-being of the child, and that their carers are getting the support they need. Private fostering describes an arrangement when someone, who is not a close relative, cares for another person’s child for 28 days or more. Although this is done by private arrangement, legally the parent and the carer must notify the local authority where the child is going to live so that the local authority can ensure that the child is being properly looked after.

School dinners

Every day, an extra 1060 children in Leeds are having a school dinner compared to last year, ensuring they get at least one, healthy nutritious meal a day. This includes a six per cent increase in the uptake of free school meals, which means 580 extra children are getting the free school meal they are entitled to. Leeds City Council’s catering service - Catering Leeds, has been working hard with schools across the city to raise the profile of free school meals, as well as reducing the stigma often attached to the free provision. Parents and carers of all children starting primary and secondary school were given an advice leaflet and schools with low uptake were contacted directly to make sure that all parents are aware of how to claim their Free School Meals allowance. ILLEGAL TOBACCO HAUL SNIFFED OUT Over 25,000 cigarettes and 22 kilos of tobacco have been seized as part of a major crackdown on the sale of illegal tobacco in Sheffield. A carefully planned operation organised by Sheffield City Council’s Trading Standards team, supported by South Yorkshire Police, used two trained ‘sniffer’ dogs to swoop on seven shops across Sheffield. The dogs sniffed out concealed goods in a variety of ingenious hidden cavities, ranging from hydraulicallyoperated compartments to a false bottom in a parrot’s cage. Altogether, approximately 25,000 illegal cigarettes, 22 kilos of tobacco, 12 kilos of molasses for hooka pipes and 300 ‘blunts’, or rolling cones for smoking tobacco and other substances, were seized during the operation. Councillor Jack Scott, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Recycling and Streetscene said: “This has been a tremendously successful operation and highlights our determination to reduce the number of people smoking in the city and

the criminals who profit from this activity. “Illegal tobacco is routinely sold in Sheffield for as little as half price - £3.50 as opposed to over £7.00 for legitimate cigarettes. This illegal and unsafe tobacco increases teen smoking, harms health in our communities, worsens health inequalities and is linked to crime at many levels. “We are determined to improve health and address health inequalities in the city and reduce tobacco use, especially in children. We are actively tackling the illegal sale of tobacco and progress is being made, but we recognise that there is still a lot more to do.” Research in the North of England shows that over half of smokers aged 14 to 17 have been offered illicit tobacco, and that buying rates amongst these age groups are higher than amongst older smokers. The seized products are currently being examined and then the property owners will be formally interviewed. It is believed the cases will be heard in court in about four months’ time.

Demolition

The former Walker Welfare Centre in Edge Lane in Thornhill is to be demolished after becoming too unsafe for refurbishment. The building was originally scheduled for demolition in 2008 but was then handed to the community for conversion into a community centre and a grant of £100,000 made available. This week the building was handed back to Kirklees Council as it has become unsafe and is considered to be beyond repair. It will now be demolished using emergency powers and this is likely to take place within the next couple of weeks. The site will be fenced off to prevent unauthorised access and tenders for the demolition work will be sought.

Countdown to ALevel results day

Are you a student, or the parent/guardian of a student, planning to start a degree course this September? With A-level results day now only a couple of weeks away, the time is fast approaching for prospective students to think about what they might do if, for some reason, they don’t end up with the grades they were hoping for. One option is to go through the clearing process. This allows students, who meet the requirements, to take up a place on any courses which still have places remaining. Last year more students than ever secured a place on a degree course through clearing. If your grades aren't up to scratch, but your heart is set on a subject, there is also the option of studying a

foundation degree that leads onto a bachelors. The Bradford College University Centre, which is home to over 4000 students, has been offering university level courses for over 30 years. There are over 150 full time and part time degree level courses to choose from, including foundation degrees, some of which will be available through clearing.

Owner, Naz, has worked with some of the biggest names in makeup such as MAC, Lubna Rafiq and Joshiv. Now, having recently appeared on the cover of Asiana, and after spending years working across the UK, both based in London and on a variety of top shows such as Eastern Eye and Asian Bridal Exhibition, Naz has decided to bring her great wealth of expertise to her very own salon. Located on Upper Woodlands Road, Bradford, the studio welcomes customers to come and browse the highest quality bridal packages, whilst also acting as a place for Naz to fulfil her passion of teaching. The Naz Beauty Academy offers an intense, five day course for aspiring beauticians whereby they are given all the skills they need to become fully-fledged makeup artists. “I say to my students, ‘I’m giving you everything,” Naz explains. “The course was launched in response to a number of requests from aspiring beauticians all over the country.” After these initial teachings, the pupils are then told to go away and practice for three months as to hone in on their particular skills. By giving the students a long leave, Naz explains how they are able to gain confidence and independence by taking ownership of their new found skills before taking paying clients. Secondly, the salon doubles as an appointment based bridal makeup studio, offering only the best bridal packages catering to everything from hair to makeup. “You can come and see firsthand our amazing bridal packages,” she said. “We have trained hairdressers, facial beauty therapists and nail technicians on hand to completely replicate the image for the big day.” Naz understands the importance of ensuring each detail of a bride’s makeup is perfect adding: “For me it’s always been about quality. If it’s a bride and you mess her makeup up and you’re living in a close-knit community like Bradford, word gets out.” And word certainly has got out when it comes to Naz, but for all the right reasons. “When the brides up on that stage, all her friends and family will be asking who did the brides makeup.” Naz ensures every bride is looked after profusely; always taking the time to add the all important finishing touches.

TRAINING ACADEMY

It’s down to her hard work and perfectionist take on bridal makeup that her name is out there as one of the top bridal makeup artists around. “With me it’s always been word of mouth,” she says, and with the high quality of service she offers it’s really no wonder that people talk.

On the other side of the hedge s some readers may recall, in previous articles I have reported on the updates to the law surrounding Interest Rate Hedging Products. Prior to the economic downturn many banks across the United Kingdom offered loan facilities to its customers, on the condition that their customers entered into an Interest Rate Hedging Instrument. This type of product was sold almost as an insurance policy against the ever increasing interest rates at that time. The way the products were sold by the Banks and the significant financial burdens the products have caused has provoked a number of legal claims. One of the first cases to be heard by the Court was Green –v- Royal Bank of Scotland. Proceedings were issued by a Paul Rowley, a hotelier and, his business partner, John Green (“the Claimants”). The Claimants had an existing £1.5 million loan facility in place with the Royal Bank of Scotland (“the Bank”), repayable over 15 years, on an interest only basis at 1.5 percent over the base rate. Subsequently the Claimants entered into a Base Rate Swap (“the Swap”) with the Bank on the following the terms; a fixed base rate of 4.83 percent which was to be applied to the notional sum of £1.5 million. The way the Swap operated meant that if the interest rate fell below 4.83 percent, the Claimants’ loan repayments would decrease but they would have to pay the corresponding sum to the Bank under the Swap. A Swap of this nature is a highly sophisticated product and one which the average man on the street would not be able to fully understand without taking advice from a financial expert. The Claimants’ case centred on the advice given by the Bank which they alleged was negligent. However, when considering the facts of this case, the Court found in favour of

A

the Bank. The Court held that the Bank were only under a duty to take reasonable steps to ensure that the counterparty to a transaction understood the nature of the product, in accordance with the Financial Conduct Authority’s Conduct of Business Rules. The Court concluded that the Claimants had persuaded themselves that the Bank had misled them on the termination of the product. Just because the relative advantages and disadvantages were discussed did not mean that the swap was recommended. The product had been described by the Bank as being ‘suitable’ but the Court found that the term ‘suitable’ meant that it was suitable to Claimants’ needs, not that advice had been given for them to take out the Swap. The case was recently heard by the Court of Appeal, which rejected the Claimants’ appeal. The substantive Judgement will not be issued until Autumn of this year but is eagerly awaited. Although the decision in this case is likely to cause some uncertainty, it must be noted that cases of this nature are highly fact-sensitive and must be considered on their own merits. One of the reasons this case was dismissed by the Court of Appeal was due to the fact that the six year limitation period had elapsed. If you consider you may have been mis-sold an interest rate protection product, you must take immediate action to protect your position. It may be possible to enter into a Standstill Agreement with the bank (an agreement between the parties which effectively freezes the limitation period). If you have been sold an interest rate protection product and require advice on whether you have an action against your bank then please contact Luke Patel at Blacks.

Jazz Gill Aman Hayer’s Entourage Live Nick Sahota

joins

Leeds’ very own Deejay and Host, Jazz Gill, has officially joined Aman Hayers Entourage Live in a move which Jazz calls ‘a dream come true’. After 11 years on the deejay circuit, the Desi Folk music enthusiast has now officially joined forces with his long-time idol. Jazz was born into music, with his parents being very good friends with legends such as Alaap, Heera, Gurdas Maan and many more. At the tender age of 11, he was handed his parents 1000+ tape collection to listen to, and this is when the youngster first began creating ideas of how to mix these songs together. Initially starting out as a R’n’B deejay on Vinyl, Jazz fell in love with the sound of True Desi Folk music just before his teens as he explored his parent’s vast music collection. His uncle, Surjit Singh Hare, was a disco deejay specialising in the 70’s and 80’s music and at the age of 13, Jazz would go to shows with him and see the response the crowd was giving and how to drop the right tracks at the right time. After purchasing his first pair of decks, Jazz would practise his craft four hours a day, seven days a week, mastering how to mix beats together without vocals clashing whilst also concentrating on his hosting techniques. From here it lead into Jazz’s parents funding his first ever rig to Launch ‘Gillyz Productionz’

August 2013 - 1st Edition and Jazz’s first ever show was with his idol, and now his colleague, Aman Hayer. When Jazz started as a deejay in 2003 he used to organise events across Leeds and Bradford and book his idol Aman Hayer to come perform and entertain the crowd. One year later, Jazz saw Aman performing live on keyboards in Jazzy B’s full live band. When Jazz was looking down from the balcony and watching how the whole band worked together to create the show his love for Bhangra music grew even more. He said: “I was stood on the balcony above watching Aman on Keys and watching how this man worked them Keyboards made me idolise Aman even more as a musician / producer. Even on recent shows I am still amazed when I watch Aman Paaji on Keys – he is a true musician and a very talented person” Jazz started seeing the response from these performances and his uncle’s shows which he then wanted to transfer into his own performances. He would deejay on his uncle’s shows to get this feeling and how to create that feeling through music; he would also watch his favourite artists like Aman Hayer Perform and create that “hype” to the crowd. This made Jazz fall in love with the music and this industry even more and pushed him into launching his own Roadshow to then deejay and create that “hype” himself. “There is nothing better than seeing the smile you are putting on the crowds face by them enjoying the way you mix songs and host on the microphone as a deejay. I feel that interacting with the crowd is a very essential point in keeping a crowd alive and I like to use my microphone often and keep in constant contact with my crowd,” he said. After growing up in the same industry as his idol, Jazz has now fulfilled a lifelong ambition, joining artists such as Angrej Ali, Dev Dhillon, Sunny Hayre, Kubs Matharu, Nick Sahota and of

course Aman Hayer with Entourage Live, to name just a few. The news was broken over social media and came as big news to the northern market as nothing was disclosed beforehand and was all kept private until this launch. Now, at the age of 25, Jazz has already done his first few shows alongside the Entourage Live team. He was delighted to have joined up with the team of talented musicians and was thankful for all the support he has received over the years. “I would like to say thank you to Waheguru, up and above me, who has guided me, saved me, made me and created me into the man I am today,” he said. “Without God’s guidance and saviour my dreams would not have been fulfilled today. “Also I want to say a massive thank you to my parents Amerjit Kaur Gill and Mandeep Singh Gill for believing in my journey and my dreams, supporting me and letting me do what I have loved to do from such a young age. “Parent’s guidance is essential to fulfill your dreams, and without my parents guidance I would not have the mentality and drive that I have today.” The concept of Entourage Live is that you can book your favourite artists to perform with the live band but also book your favourite deejay to then play all your favourite dance floor fillers in-between the singers performing. The Entourage Live is forever growing and now covers every city within the UK for Full Live Band and Deejays as well as International shows, Club shows and Private parties. The Entourage offer a wide range of services to make every event special and we also customise packages.

Day of Action to help the people of East Leeds

The Nowells area of Burmantofts & Richmond Hill Ward has been the focus of a multi-agency day of action called Operation Champion. Councillors Ron Grahame, Asghar Khan and Maureen Ingham (Labour, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) have worked with the Neighbourhood Manager for the area to organise the project and helped out on the day. Operation Champion was hailed a major success with a team of over 20 officers from a wide variety of services blitzing the streets to address the concerns of local residents. Activities on the day included providing new waste bins for residents, a thorough clean-up of the area by the new ‘grot spot team’, litter picking, and clean ups of Council estates. West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, West Yorkshire Police and the Leeds Anti-Social Behaviour Team were also on hand to offer residents useful assistance and advice, ensure homes were crime and fire-safe and notify residents of improvement plans for the area. Leeds Neighbourhood Approach Team also carried out a number of visits to private rented sector properties as part of their intensive improvement programme in the neighbourhood.

The aim of the scheme is to improve the conditions of private rented properties in the area, as well as bringing back into use long term empty properties. Operation Champion forms part of work which is being directed through the Burmantofts Neighbourhood Improvement Board. The purpose of the Neighbourhood Improvement Board is to provide an opportunity for local residents to work with local Councillors and service providers to develop solutions to key issues effecting where they live. Councillor Ron Grahame (Labour, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) said: “Operation Champion was a fantastic success and it was great to see the Police, Fire Service and Council staff working together to help the local community. As funding for these services continues to reduce, this project demonstrates the effectiveness of joined-up working across local services in order to share resources and best practices and ensure residents get the assistance they need. “My thanks go to the Council’s Area Support Team for organising Operation Champion and all the staff for working so hard on the day. We should be proud of this fantastic achievement.”

Drugs gang jailed for over 40 years Seven men, who were involved in a major drugs supply chain across the north of England, have been jailed for a total of 40 years eight months after being sentenced last month. Mustaq Bagas, 39, of London Road, Blackburn; Maqsood Bagas, 24, of Mavis Road, Blackburn; Usman Akhter, 29, of Avallon Way, Darwen; Hussain Ahmed, 33 of Northmoor Road, Manchester; Nizam Patel, 24, of Trevor Close, Blackburn; Mubarak Patel, 34 of Nimes Street, Preston; Mohebour Rahman, 31, of South Street, Longsight, Manchester and Ijaz Saeed, 29, of Helme Lane, Meltham, West Yorkshire, appeared at Preston Crown Court on Monday 29th July after pleading guilty to their part in a conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. Mustaq Bagas was sentenced to ten years eight months imprisonment; Maqsood Bagas was jailed for six years; Akhter was given five years; Ahmed

was given three years four months; Mubarak Patel was jailed for five years four months; Rahman was given four years four months and Saeed was given six years. An eighth man, Nizam Patel, was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment which was suspended for two years. He will also be required to complete 200 hours unpaid work. The sentencing follows an operation – codenamed Turnstone, which was led by Eastern Division’s Targeted Crime Team, a specialist unit dedicated to the investigation of organised crime groups in Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley. Investigations revealed that the principal subject of Operation Turnstone, Mustaq Bagas, headed a wellestablished organised crime group based in Blackburn but with far reaching contacts and associates extending into the

Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire areas. This group was responsible for the buying, selling and movement of significant amounts of cocaine and heroin throughout the North West of England. During the course of the investigation, which started in early 2012, police recovered more than nine kilos of heroin, half a kilo of cocaine, over 13,000 ecstasy tablets, over 125 kilos of cutting agents and almost £225,000 cash. The haul was found during a series of raids and seizures late 2012 and early 2013 at premises in Blackburn and Greater Manchester. Detective Inspector, Mark Winstanley, said: “These are significant sentences that the Judge has handed down today which reflect the very serious nature of the offences and the level that this group was operating at. This has been a long and complex investigation which has involved a number of enquiries spanning across

different police forces “These people were working together to supply drugs to communities, not only in Lancashire, but across the northwest. This type of crime blights our communities and destroys lives. These people have benefitted from the misery that drugs bring to other people’s lives and I am pleased that they will now spending time behind bars. “The financial investigation into the activities of the group is on-going and we will continue to explore every avenue to disrupt and prevent the group from operating in the future. “Today’s result should send a clear message to those involved in organised crime and drug dealing: we know who you are. You will be targeted and be prepared to receive a lengthy prison sentence.” Sentencing for a ninth man Tahir Ghafoor, 30, of Lavington Avenue, Cheadle has been adjourned until 19th September.

EID MUBARAK

AsianExpress.co.uk

The adrenaline of Eid Celebrations by Andleeb Hanif With the month of Ramadan, coming to a close, families now begin to make the final rushed preparations for the final touches of celebrating Eid-ulFitr. The fun of hearing the family squabbling over the vast array of favourite and new dishes that ‘mum’ should prepare is a delicious sound to the ears. But the truth is, in my opinion, the favourite bit to the build up of Eid is the frenzied last minute shopping. Nothing beats the adrenaline of rushing around the shops a day before Eid after realising in horror that ‘Hamza and Kamran’s’ outfits have yet still to be bought, or handling the crisis when it dawns upon you that ‘Shyla, Hannah, Ayesha, Sahar and Mia’ have still yet to be kitted out with new pairs of

shoes! My personal favourite dilemma preceding Eid day, however, is facing the historically significant and frustrating traditionally syndrome called ‘Satiya-naas of Suit by Darzi’! ‘Satiya-naas of Suit by Darzi’, definitely is on top of the list of classic Eid anecdotes. The hysteria that follows is simply world-class. Absolutely nothing else beats the adrenaline rush. It’s a hands down mostmemorable incident which will be talked about for weeks. And I’ll tell you why. First, the ‘suit’ has to be painstakingly sought out through a process of scientific elimination. Numerous footmiles and hours have most probably gone into this crucial process. If this process was

August 2013

“After the thirty testing days of fasting and practising self-restraint, this week Muslims will finally be indulging in daytime treats with the start of 'Eid-ul-fitr.” carried out with other female members of the family, a magnanimous amount of onthe-spot debating (possibly fighting) will have gone into the of the selection fabric/print/shading etc. After this, the executive decisions about the ‘precise colour-matching of the slip’, ‘which buttons?’, ‘what laces?’, ‘how many metres?’ and the ruling of various other embellishments will have consumed (unfortunately) numerous brain cells. Then it’s time to get to the ‘darzi’ or ‘darzan’ (tailor), possibly with a clipping of an outfit design from a magazine or a hand drawn draft. This is then explained in great detail to the tailor, whilst facing the pressure of the glares, huff and puffs of other eager and

impatient ladies in the queue to see the tailor. When the day eventually arrives to pick up the outfit (after being fobbed off by tailor during numerous telephone calls/visits following the original pick-up date), the suit must go through a thorough The risk examination. assessment of ‘issues’ with the suit lies at approximately 80%. It is usually at this point all hell breaks loose, so to speak. Fortunately, with last minute alterations during ‘Chaand Raat’ or the make-do of a ‘back-up’ suit, the wonderful social customs of Eid day soon dissipate the utter frustration of the ‘Satiyaa-naas of Suit by Darzi’ syndrome. Fortunately when the joyous festive day arrives, the preparation and anticipation of

numerous yummy and indulgent dishes, attending Eid prayers, getting dressed up, applying the all-important and essential henna, awaiting the arrival or visiting family, giving and receiving Eidi reinforces the power of relationships and communal living. The ambience and atmosphere that surrounds this beautiful occasion overrides quandaries leading up to the celebrations. After the thirty testing days of fasting and practising selfrestraint, this week Muslims will finally be indulging in daytime treats with the start of 'Eid-ul-fitr. Wishing all of our Muslim readers a very, very jovial Eid Mubarak, from all of us at the Asian Express Newspaper. Andleeb Hanif Editor-in-Chief

History of Eid-ul-Fitr

AsianExpress.co.uk

Celebrated at the end of the most sacred Islamic month Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr is a threeday long festival that is enthusiastically celebrated by all Muslims of the world. But how did this exciting festival originate? According to the Islamic tradition, it was in the year 610 A.D. that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), while meditating in Mount Hira one night during the month of Ramadan, had a vision of the angel Jibril (also known as Gabriel) appearing before him telling his name to Muhammad (PBUH) and declaring to the latter that he was the messenger of God. Jibril said to him : "Iqraa" (meaning "read" or "recite"). To this Muhammad (PBUH) replied that he could not read. Jibril embraced Muhammad (PBUH) and after releasing him repeated: "Iqraa." "I cannot read." Muhammad (PBUH) answered again. Jibril hugged Muhammad (PBUH) for a third time and asked him to recite what he said. He told him: "Recite in the name of your Lord Who creates. Creates man from a clot. Recite: And your Lord is the Most Bountiful, Who teaches by the pen, He teaches man what he does not know." Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

was of forty years of age at this time. In the following twenty-three years, Muhammad (PBUH) was visited many times by Jibril who taught him the holy knowledge in verses. This sacred knowledge consists of the code of conduct that Allah wants his people to maintain on earth. It is inscribed in verses, which are compiled in the holy Quran, the most sacred book in Islam. The knowledge was first revealed to Muhammad (PBUH) during the month of Ramadan. As a mark of respect to Allah and to show gratitude to him for the true knowledge that he gifted to his sons and daughters, the prophet asked his followers (and therefore the followers of Islam) to pass the month of Ramadan in fasting, prayers and other austerities and end the month-long nonindulgence with festive celebrations. This is how Eid-UlFitr was born. This three-day long celebration ends the ninth month and begins the tenth month of Shawwal in the Isamic calendar. The aim of this festival is to promote peace, strengthen the feeling of brotherhood and bring oneself back to the normal course of life after a month-long period of selfdenial and religious devotion.

Orange Scented Gulab Jamun Ingredients For the sugar syrup 365g sugar 250ml water 1tsp orange essence 310g plain flour

EID MUBARAK

7

Serves makes 20-30 Prep time: 15 minutes Cooking time 10-15 minutes

1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda pinch ground nutmeg 397g can Carnation condensed milk ghee or ground nut oil to fry

To finish, a sprinkling of toasted desiccated coconut Method Make a thin syrup, by boiling the sugar and water together for a few minutes, allow to cool then stir in the orange essence. Sift together the dry ingredients into a bowl and stir in enough condensed milk to form a soft dough (approximately half the can). Shape the dough into small sausages approximately 2cm in length then fry gently in a pan of hot oil. You should aim to cook 3-4 jamuns at a time as they expand during cooking. Do not allow the oil to over heat as the jamuns will cook too quickly on the outside but not be cooked through in the middle. Drain the jamuns onto kitchen paper then place into a clean pan with the orange syrup. Serve hot or cold with toasted coconut, to finish.

Pistachio and Chocolate Burfi Ingredients 190g milk powder 150ml double cream 1 tbsp butter or ghee

Makes 20 Prep time: 20 minutes

1 tsp ground nutmeg 50g pistachio nuts, chopped 397g can Carnation condensed milk

To finish 100g dark chocolate, melted gold or silver leaf Method Mix the milk powder and double cream in a bowl until it forms a thick and crumbly paste. Heat the butter or ghee over a low heat for a couple of minutes, stir in the nutmeg and pistachio and toast for a few minutes. Add the cream mixture and the condensed milk; the mixture will be solid to start with and will soften as you continue to heat it. Keep stirring until the mixture starts to come away from the sides. Pour into a non-stick tray and spread to a 2cm thickness. Spread over the melted chocolate and decorate with gold or silver leaf. Allow to cool and then cut into square shapes.

Rockin’ it

The famous Curry Mile on Wilmslow Road will see its traditional parade of supercars Picture the scenario – Wilmslow Road, Friday night during Eid this week… droves of youngsters blowing incessantly on horns and with Pakistan flags draped over their shoulders… as every year, they’ll seem to be having the time of their lives. The Muslim youth have a second celebration in the evenings, and the events of the night are not for the fainthearted with a carnival feel sweeping over the atmosphere on the famous ‘Curry Mile’. For many who have celebrated more auspiciously, its distasteful. For the younger generation, it’s a way to blow off some steam with friends, fancy rides, music and laughter.

The extraordinary array of cars which will make their ritual way up and then back down the road add to the noisy spectacle. Gleaming supercars (some hired some owned) Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys, Porches, along with limos parade up and down the roads. For many, this is one time where a car can be showcased without the worry of being seen as being bigheaded. Those with sports cars and super cars most definitely don’t shy away from flashing their goods amidst heavy police presence, but honestly, the majority of the officers on duty get into the spirit and enjoy a laugh and a joke with the party goers.

Scotland MP becomes Pakistan Governor Mohammad Sarwar named governor of Pakistan’s largest province By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A former Glasgow MP has been officially appointed as the governor of Punjab, Pakistan, and has made it his mission to tackle child illiteracy in the area. 61-year-old Mohammed Sarwar has now renounced his British citizenship as he embarks on his new role in control of the largest province in Pakistan, with an estimated population of 96 million people. Mr Sarwar became Britain’s first Muslim MP in 1997 before being named chairman of the Scottish Affairs Select Committee; he stood down from his role in 2010. The former Labour representative understands the challenge his is about to embark on will be one of much larger proportions than he has previously tackled yet ensures he is ready to get started. “I am not naive about the challenges which lie ahead,” he said. “This is a big job but it is one I will approach with the same values and principles I have stood up for all my life; to help lift people out of poverty and support them to fulfil their life chances. “I believe the best route to meeting that goal is through education and I look forward to working with a dynamic

Chief Minister, many friends and colleagues across Pakistan and the world to achieve that. "It is a high honour for me to be invited to serve the country of my birth and the people of Pakistan.” Despite his joy to return to the South Asian country, Mr Sarwar did express his gratitude for Scotland. He said: “I left Scotland with a heavy heart, leaving behind family, friends and colleagues who have given me such tremendous support over the years. “In particular, I would wish to thank the people of Glasgow for the warmth and respect they have shown me in the past and for the many, many good wishes they have sent me for the future.” Mr Sarwar has travelled regularly to Pakistan over the past three years to help with his health and education charities in the country, with his main political goal now to raise the literacy level in the country from 60 per cent. The Ucare Foundation has built one primary school, hundreds of houses for flood victims, and two hospitals, which treat over 120,000 patients a year. Earlier this year, he played a key role in the election of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in June, helping win votes for his Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) party in his native region.

UKIP blasts sacking A dinner lady at a Cambridge primary school has been sacked after inadvertently feeding pork to a Muslim child. Alison Waldock, 51, said she had forgotten about the dietary restrictions for Muslim pupils as she asked one of the children at Queen Edith Primary School if she wanted gammon, to which she replied yes. It was only because the head teacher noticed the mistake that she didn’t eat the ‘forbidden’ food. Ms Waldock, who had been working at the school for 11 years, was initially suspended after the child’s parents complained, before having her contract terminated by the school. Mr Farage told ITV1's Daybreak programme: “It's outrageous, isn't it? We've all made mistakes in our lives and in our jobs, and I can imagine 250 SACKED: Alison Waldock

kids coming through chattering, it's noisy, you've got time pressures on you, and mistakes get made. “The reason that Alison's been sacked is that we're so terrified in this country of causing offence to anybody, particularly the Muslim religion.” Asked if he was jumping on the bandwagon he added: “No, I think it's important, because I think actually what's been happening with this whole politically correct agenda is lots of decent ordinary people are losing their jobs and paying the price for us being terrified of causing offence. “There was nothing malicious or deliberate in this, and this isn't just Alison, this is happening to scores of people every month up and down the country, she's just got the courage to come and talk about it.”

Over a hundred hospitals and care homes across England have been awarded a share of a £50million fund to create pioneering care environments designed with the needs of people with dementia in mind. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt today announced details of the 116 successful projects as part of a visit to the award winning dementia ward at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Foundation Trust. Guy’s and St Thomas’ were selected to receive £955,490 to fund their project ‘Designing the Dementia Journey’ – a holistic approach to the environment for people with dementia, which will support the hospital’s existing care provision for dementia patients. The older person’s unit features a specially designed ward environment, with colour-coded bays and symbols to help patients remember their way back to their bed. Patients with dementia are given blue wristbands so staff can easily identify them, and are served food on red meal trays so that staff know these patients need extra help with eating and drinking. The funding will enable these successful initiatives to be rolled out to other high priority wards across the Trust. Jeremy Hunt spoke of the importance of placing the needs of dementia patients first when designing new care environments. The Health Secretary said: “There is little doubt that our home and work environment has an important impact upon our day to day lives – and our care environment is no exception. “We can encounter any number of places and spaces in one day, and yet for someone with advanced dementia even walking from one room to another can be difficult. This pilot scheme will form an important first step towards driving forward better care environments for people with dementia. “Funding was awarded to projects that demonstrate how practical changes to the environment within which people with dementia are treated in will make a tangible improvement to their condition.” The projects will form part of the first national pilot to showcase the best examples of dementia friendly environments across England, to build evidence around the type of physical changes that have the most benefit for dementia patients. Cluttered ward layouts and poor signage in hospitals and care homes were cited as the top reasons for causing confusion and distress in people with dementia in research conducted by The King’s Fund. Replacing reflective sanitaryware and surfaces, and installing clearer signage using distinctive colours and pictures, has been shown to help dementia patients manage their condition better by helping to reduce confusion and agitation. Jeremy Hughes, Alzheimer’s Society Chief Executive said: “The effect an unfamiliar hospital or care home environment has on the wellbeing of a person with dementia is often underestimated. Changes to a person’s surroundings can leave people with dementia feeling confused, anxious or agitated and can drastically affect their quality of life. “Moving into a care home or spending time in hospital can be a difficult transition, and often the buildings and grounds are not layed out in a way that supports staff to deliver good quality care. “Investment in pioneering projects that will create dementia-friendly environments within these care settings will play a vital part in helping to improve the care hospitals or care homes are able to provide.”

Arrest made over explosion tattoo By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A man has been arrested after being spotted at an English Defence League rally with a tattoo of a mosque being blown up on his ribs. 39-year-old Shaun Reah, from South Shields, Tyneside, was arrested by police on suspicion of enciting racial hatred following the protest in Birmingham on 20th July. He was arrested by Northumbria Police on Friday on behalf of West Midlands Police. A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “A 39-year-old man has been arrested in South Tyneside on behalf of West Midlands Police on suspicion of using words or behaviour, or displaying written material with intent to stir up racial hatred.” Mr Reah was pictured at the rally with a tattoo of a mosque with the word "boom!" written across it which has triggered over 100 death threats and a mass debate on social media sites. On Twitter, Tom Doran wrote: “Genuinely torn on this story, Tattoos

surely come under free speech, but equally this one is directly intimidating.” Sohail Malik was forgiving as he tweeted: “I forgive Shaun Reah for his Mosque tattoo. He removed it & he's clearly sorry. Don't be haters like the #EDL” yet Alan Archie was not so merciful and simply wrote, “Idiot”. Mr Reah has now reportedly had the tattoo removed and is fully cooperating with the police according to his solicitor, Kevin Smallcombe, of Hannays Crime Solicitors. Speaking to Sky, Mr Smallcombe said: “Mr Reah is happy to fully cooperate with police in what is a case which has clearly triggered a great deal of emotion and debate.” Meanwhile, in footage, recorded by Sky, Reah said he had the tattoo removed because, “it upset everyone”, and when asked why he had it done in the first place, added, "it was just a daft thing to do". The force made a total of 20 arrests following the rally - and counterprotest - off Birmingham's Broad Street earlier this month. Police said up to 2,000 people gathered at two locations in the city centre.

Royal footman’s visa expires Just one week on from playing a starring role in announcing the birth of the Royal baby a Buckingham Palace footman has left his role after his visa expired. Badar Azim, 25, was seen around the world, assisting the Queen’s press secretary, Alisa Anderson, in displaying the official birth notice for Prince George outside the Royal estate. Yet now, Mr Azim must return to his homeland of India after failing in his application to stay in the UK. The Calcutta-born palace employee has only been working in the Queen’s royal household for a year, starting in 2012. It has been reported that the hospitality management

graduate was trying to extend the visa, but it is now thought he has returned home to India after being denied a renewal. Mr Azim was able to graduate from Napier University, Edinburgh, in June 2011 thanks to financial help from St Mary's Orphanage and Day school in Calcutta, where he studied as a boy. The footman's father, Mohammed Rahim, a 52-yearold welder, and his 41-year-old mother Mumtaz Begum, only discovered their son's part in the birth announcement when they saw his picture in Indian newspapers. Buckingham Palace and the Home Office both said they did not comment on individual cases.

Lord Verjee

Pizza tycoon and Indian origin philanthropist, Rumi Verjee, was made a lord on Thursday 1st August. The honour, given by the British monarch, gives the awardee the right to sit and vote in the House of Lords and Mr Verjee was nominated for the role by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. Multi millionaire Rumi Verjee, who brought the Domino's pizza chain to Britain, has now become Lord Verjee. A well known donor to the Liberal Democrat party, he is among the 30 new peers announced by British Prime Minister David Cameron, ten of whom are representatives of the Liberal Democrats. Verjee is a Ugandan-born Indian entrepreneur and is believed to be worth an estimated £125 million.

Jailed

Three Sikh extremists were convicted in the UK on Wednesday on the charges of carrying out a lifethreatening attack on Lt Gen (retired) Kuldip Singh Brar. Brar, who had led "Operation Blue Star" 28 years ago to flush out pro-Khalistani militants from the Golden Temple, was killed in London last year. The 78-year-old, ex-army personnel, was attacked as he walked with his wife in Old Quebec Street, central London, on 30th September, 2012. A jury at London's Southwark Crown Court deliberated for only one hour before finding Mandeep Singh Sandhu, 34, Dilbag Singh, 37 and Harjit Kaur, 39 guilty of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Another male suspect, Barjinder Singh Sangha, 33, has already pleaded guilty with all four people set to be sentenced in September. Asian

Children marriage campaign

Commonwealth to address the issue of early and forced marriages The Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) and global children’s charity, Plan UK, teamed up last week to discuss the negative impact of forced marriages around the world. Every day over 38,000 girls are married young, with adverse impact on their education, health and future life opportunities. Child marriage also has severe

implications for child protection, violence against women and economic and social development. The event, staged in London on the 26th July, brought together London based High Commissioners, senior officials, academics and practitioners from across the Commonwealth to address both legislative and cultural approaches to making a child

marriage free future a reality. Also on hand to speak about forced marriages were guest speakers from Pakistan and Malawi who had witnessed such acts first hand in their local towns and villages. 17-year-old Laraib Arshad, from Chakwal, Pakistan, was one speaker who attended the event and told the story about a 14-year-old girl from her town who had fallen victim to a forced marriage. After getting married at such a young age, the girl became pregnant and was constantly finding problems with her in-laws who said she still had ‘a child attitude as a married girl’. During her pregnancy the young would-be mother faced a number of health issues and had a stillbirth. Laraib explains how this kind of situation is not necessarily rare in the country due to the high dropout rate of girls in education. She said: “Here in our village mostly girls will drop out because of less interest from their parents in education. “Our youth group is actively involved in the campaigns against things like harassment, abuse

and violence. We, in break time, take to our college fellows on these topics. We also have discussion with our teachers during and after class. “What I would expect if I were attending the Commonwealth secretariat meeting in London…. Apart from having a legal law; this exposure would have helped me to work differently and practically for my village and become an active member of my group.” The whole day was arranged to build on the success of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) and Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting in 2011, whereby the Commonwealth governments came together and made historic statements in support of measures to end child marriage. “The Commonwealth will address the issue of early and forced marriage, and consider actions to support the rights of women and children and to share its best practices to promote the implementation of measures to tackle early and forced marriage,” CHOGM Communiqué 2011.

Do more to support ethnic minority businesses’

The Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, today called on Britain's banks to do more to ensure that everyone who wants to start a business is given the opportunity to turn their ideas and aspirations into successful enterprises. Speaking at a meeting in Manchester with senior banking figures and entrepreneurs from ethnic minorities, he said, “It is vital that all businesses have fair access to viable finance as the country looks to rebuild the economy. The Deputy Prime Minister’s words come as a new report he commissioned found that although the banking industry is working hard to ensure ethnic minority businesses have access to finance, there is more to be done to help under-represented groups reach their goals. As a result of the findings, the Government has agreed with the British Bankers’ Association that the banking industry will commit to a series of measures to improve access to finance for ethnic minority business groups. This includes collecting data through independent research, for the first time, on the experiences of ethnic minority businesses seeking finance. Speaking in Manchester, where he met representatives of the banking industry and the ethnic minority business community, the Deputy Prime Minister said that while there is no evidence that the challenges ethnic minority businesses face are due to racial discrimination, they do still have problems accessing loans. The Deputy Prime Minister said: “This is a tremendously valuable report, and I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to get us to this point – officials, businesspeople from ethnic minorities and the British Bankers’ Association.

“I welcome the fact that the report finds no evidence of racial discrimination, and I am pleased to see the banking industry has agreed to a range of measures to address the various factors that have prevented some entrepreneurs from getting loans. I am particularly glad to see the banks commit to independent research on ethnic minority businesses and their experience of accessing finance so that they can monitor the situation. “This report is a good start, and a valuable statement of intent, but there is much more to be done to make sure that entrepreneurs from ethnic minorities have a fair chance to achieve their goals. The Ethnic Minority Businesses and Access to Finance report is published today by the Communities Minister, Don Foster, following detailed discussions between the British Bankers’ Association, Government and business representatives. The report finds that, while there is good work already underway by the banks -

including improved data collection on the experiences of ethnic minority businesses there is more that the banking industry can do to ensure that those, who are underrepresented, are given every opportunity to succeed. Don Foster said: “We are determined to help people who want to work hard and get ahead, make the most of their untapped talents and realise their full potential, irrespective of their background. “All too often, people from ethnic minority communities don't get the chance to meet their aspirations to start up their own business, with those from a Black African or Caribbean heritage particularly underrepresented among our entrepreneurs. “We all have a shared stake in this country's economic future. So I want today's report to be a catalyst for change, to ensure that the necessary support is in place to turn ideas into successful businesses for the future.

Ramadan in Syria It's just over half-way through the month of Ramadan. Around 1.8m Syrian refugees have fled their homes and are now living in neighbouring countries with more arriving each day. Families are living either in refugee camps, temporary tented settlements or crowded rented accommodation. Life is tough and the month of Ramadan makes them think of home more than ever. The Dabbour family of five from Hay Al Tadamon – a neighbourhood of Damascus – has been living in a room which they rent for $100 (£66) a month for the last year in Wavel Camp, Lebanon, also known as Al Jaleel Camp. The Palestinian refugees say they were forced out of their home after their neighbourhood was surrounded by snipers from all sides, and eventually bombed. The mother, Raja, 40, is seen preparing iftar for her husband Seif, 50, her two sons Mohammed, 11 and Ahmed, 10, and her daughter Lulu, 7. All she has for the night is rice and potatoes cooked in flour, and some stale bread. “I hate living here, I keep thinking of going back,” Seif, who used to work as a manager in a foreign petrol company in Syria, said. “There is nothing resembling Ramadan right now. For all the talk about Ramadan being the month of charity and thinking of the poor, we are getting no help, and all we see in Syria is Shi’a killing Sunnis, Sunnis killing Shi’a. If this is Islam, I want nothing to do with it. A Muslim shouldn’t even chop off a tree, let alone kill a fellow human being. We used to live peacefully with Christians, Jews, Druze, Shia’s and Sunnis. Now look at what’s happening there. What kind of Ramadan is this? “My wife and children fast, but I’m no longer bothered. We haven’t eaten meat in a year. After the market closes down, I go to look for the rotting fruits and vegetables left in the street. I found a teddy bear in a rubbish bin, which I washed and brought for Lulu. I have no idea how I’ll pay next month’s rent, and I can’t even give money to my children to buy sweets. I’m hoping for the Geneva peace conference, I pray to God that it goes well and we’ll finally have peace so that we can return. I just want my sons to be able to play football, my daughter to play with her friends, to live in peace again.” Lulu said: “I miss my bicycle, and my friends. Here I have no one to play with. Ramadan in Syria was the best month of the year but now it’s nothing special.” Raja has been on anti-depressants over the last month. She said: “I’ve been to Syria almost once a month, for a day or less, just to see our beloved country again. It’s my medication, just breathing the air, seeing the green pastures and what remains of it. There are nights when I can’t sleep or I keep crying all day. We’re becoming mentally sick here.” • Oxfam works with partners Najdeh and Children of Al Jaleel in Wavel Camp, distributing humanitarian aid and organising children’s activities. anitarian aid and organising children’s activities

India to create new state in south India's ruling Congress party approved on Tuesday the creation of a new southern state, a move that has revived deep political divisions and raised fears of violence in the area, home to global firms including Google. The decision to break up Andhra Pradesh state and establish Telangana comes ahead of elections next year and critics say the ruling party is seeking to shore up its political fortunes after dragging its feet over the explosive issue for four decades. Supporters, however,

say Telangana's economic development has been neglected in favour of the richer and more powerful Andhra region, and that a new state is the only solution. "It was not an easy decision, we appeal to people to cooperate," said Ajay Maken, a spokesman of the Congress after the party's highest decision-making body adopted a resolution calling for the establishment of a new state, igniting celebrations in parts of Andhra.

Florida gas plant explosions

ACTION: The result of the partnership to help those in need in Northern India

All workers at a gas plant rocked by explosions have been accounted for after officials initially feared as many as 15 people had been killed. At least 24 people were working the night shift at the plant in Tavares, Lake County, when a series of blasts happened just before 11pm local time. The missing employees were found hours later as firefighters began to contain the flames.

Details of any of their injuries are not yet known. Seven workers had initially been taken to hospital, some in a critical condition, after emergency crews were called to the Blue Rhino propane processing plant. The explosions were strong enough to blow the roof off and were felt by residents living up to 10 miles away from the scene, although no neighbours were injured.

Cigarette smuggling money men ordered to pay back £2.7M

Partnership to benefit vulnerable By Jessica Nightingale jessica@asianexpress.co.uk

Two charities have teamed up to help the most vulnerable communities in Northern India. The Shining Hope Foundation, a UK charity which supports sustainable social and environmental projects, has launched a new collaboration with humanitarian charity KarunaShechen. The new partnership has enabled Karuna-Shechen to provide vital access to health, education, and social services for under-served communities in 18 villages across the Bihar region. Shining Hope is the main donor for the Medical Centre and Mobile Clinic in Bodhgaya, which aims to provide free long-term health care and medical coverage for

35,000 people per year in Bihar. This is one of the poorest regions in India where almost 60 per cent of infants and 46 percent of women are malnourished. Marie Saint-Arnoult, Trustee and Founder of the Shining Hope Foundation, said: “We are delighted to partner with such a fantastic organisation and are excited by the enormous opportunity to transform the lives of so many villagers in India. “Each project that we help fund is developed directly to respond to the needs and aspirations of those who have little or no access to such vital services. “Karuna-Shechen’s mission falls perfectly in line with our vision as a charity – to help local communities live in balance with animals and nature. This is the basis upon which we select our partners. “At Shining Hope, we are

passionate about delivering lasting changes for the communities we serve and these new projects in India are very close to our hearts.” Special focus is placed on the education and empowerment of women and girls, and thanks to the partnership Karuna-Shechen is now sending illiterate women from Indian villages to be trained as solar engineers. After the training, the women will return to their villages to put their newly acquired skills into action by installing solar light in family homes encouraging employment opportunities and a sense of pride and self-worth for the women who benefit. It is estimated the scheme will improve the quality of life and livelihoods of over 2,550 villagers. The charity will also provide women with educational opportunities and skill-

enhancement classes through a Non-Formal Education (NFE) scheme and a Health Education scheme. Matthieu Ricard, Founder of Karuna-Shechen and Buddhist monk said: “We are very grateful to the Shining Hope Foundation for choosing to partner with us and for providing us with a considerable amount of support through funding and raising awareness. “The foundation has already helped Karuna-Shechen to extend outreach services to six more villages, bringing the total to 18. “We would like to reach out to more people suffering from the grinds of poverty and marginalisation and look forward to working with the Shining Hope Foundation over the coming period so that we can make an even bigger impact.”

The financial backers of a criminal enterprise that attempted to smuggle 20 million cigarettes into the UK by describing them as babies’ toys have been ordered to repay £2.7 million or face further jail terms. Robert Doran, who owns land worth several million pounds next to the River Thames in London, was ordered to repay £1,456,325, or he will serve a further four years and six months in prison. Patrick Gray, who owns a half share in two properties in Barbados, must pay £1,244,982 or serve another four years in jail. The pair were caught after forensic evidence linked them to the multi-million pound cigarette smuggling operation. Robert Doran and Patrick Gray supplied the finance for the smuggling Asian

Asian

operation and were also involved in the purchase, packaging and shipment of the cigarettes. The crime was discovered after documents were examined from two freight containers that arrived at the Port of Felixstowe. The contents were described as 1,020 cartons of baby toys; but instead they were crammed with over 20 million cigarettes. The total duty evaded was estimated as £3.8 million. On 12th April 2010, Doran was arrested as he entered the UK at Heathrow Airport. Gray was arrested on the 8 June 2010 at his previous home address in Enfield. They were charged and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to evade excise duty and sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court on 24th February 2012.

Drones to stop US pledges to end Pakistan drone strikes earlier than planned By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

After a recent visit to Pakistan the US Secretary of State has pledged to end drone strikes on the South Asian country ‘very, very soon’. John Kerry met with his Pakistani counterpart, Sartaj Aziz, on Thursday 1st August to try and resume peace talks which had broken down in 2011 after 24 Pakistani soldiers were accidently killed by a drone strike on the Afghan border. CIA drones have killed more than 3,400 people in Pakistan since the program began in 2004, yet strikes are becoming rarer with 17 hits so far this year, compared to 48 in 2012 and 73 in 2011. The Bureau of Investigative Journalists have estimated that 368 drone strikes have hit Pakistan over the past nine years. Mr Kerry was pleased to resume talks after two years

Mobile technology used to ease Indian water supply problems A new mobile phone service informs Indians when water is available

People in India are now able to use their mobile phones to help them use their water supply more efficiently, thanks to a new service linking water engineers with the public. Most urban Indians have mobile phones but most don’t have access to enough water. The new system imposed by NextDrop helps organise India’s complicated water system to schedule distribution to appropriately fit demand. This new technology, available on all mobile phones, connects valvesmen to those in need of water, relaying information between them about reservoir levels and when the supply will be activated in different areas. It is increasingly relieving the problems of uncertainty Indian people are used to in waiting for the supply to become available in their area with no notice or

schedule. India’s water system is notoriously complex and is managed by a maze of private contractors and government utilities, which NextDrop has had to navigate in order to make the process work. A case study based in Karnataka on the company’s site explains more about the system: “Over 1 million residents have access to treated municipal water once every 2-8 days.” “There is considerable variability in the schedule, making it difficult for residents to plan ahead and know when to be at home to collect water.” “Residents are now provided the convenience of water alerts by SMS or phone call, intimating them in advance of water arrival so they can plan their day accordingly. To date, over 25,000 households have signed up for the service.”

winning form with new upbeat track Bajatey Raho

International Bhangra music pioneers RDB are back on top form with their new high-energy party track Bajatey Raho. The highly anticipated offering is the title song from the upcoming Bollywood comedy-thriller film Bajatey Raho, which releases internationally on 26th July 2013 through Eros. The feel-good anthem has been expertly produced using state-of-the-art music mixing technology by RDB brothers Surj and Manj with the lead

vocals coming from Manj himself. The song’s lyrics have been written by music connoisseur Kumar. Bradford’s very own ‘Bhangra boys’ Surj, Manj and Kuly formed RDB (Rhythm Dhol Bass) over a decade ago and have enjoyed international success with a string of hit songs, including Singh Is King, Aloo Chaat, Sadi Gali and Shera Di Kaum. They have collaborated with such music heavyweights

as Snoop Dogg, T-Pain, Ludacris, Public Enemy, Elephant Man and Bollywood’s A-list superstar Akshay Kumar, amongst others. RDB are widely regarded as having instigated the change in perception to UK-Asian music by introducing the likes of Snoop Dogg, Ludacris and T-Pain to the Bhangra-Bollywood scene. As well as creating their own unique RDB sound, the brothers have also produced tracks under their

Three Records label for a host of musical talent, including Nindy Kaur, Raftaar, Smooth, Jind Mahi, Binder Pasla, UDN and others. RDB have successfully taken the unique and eclectic fusion of Western Hip-Hop and Rock together with the infamous Punjabi ‘drum and Dhol’ beat to a mass global audience. Bajatey Raho releases internationally on 26th July 2013 through Eros.

Nachdi Vekh Ke

1Nation Media are pleased to announce the Debut Single of ‘Nachdi Vekh Ke’ by ‘DJ Dally, Mr T.S and Deep Singh’ with Keys and Harmonium played by ‘Dav Juss’ Available to download on iTunes from the 1st August, the song is dedicated to the Late Mohinder Kaur Deep Singhs Nani Ji who passed away recently. It was her dream for her grandson, Deep, to release a song, which is why the group are dedicating this track in her loving memory. With the new group offering a combination of diverse talents, here is a chance to get to know the people behind the music. DJ Dally is a British-born musician whose ability to draw on the cultural heritage of his forefathers allows him to create exciting new fusions, whilst he hopes to influence the style of British bhangra by remolding it into a raw, urban sound that makes his music stand out from the crowd. Having toured several

countries worldwide, from Europe to America, and played alongside some of the biggest artists in the industry, from Lember Hussunpuri to Master Rakesh, Dally certainly has the experience as a solo artist. Deep Singh is an upcoming talent on the Bhangra scene having grown up in Manchester and being influenced by musicians and singers from the 1980’s and 90’s. He explains: “As a child I idolised singers such as ‘Malkit Singh’ and ‘Surjit of the Sahotas’ and of course the Great Living Legend ‘Gurdas Mann’. I even listened to a lot of ‘Michael Jackson’, amazed by the way he sang and how he performed. As I grew older, I began to take a keen interest in writing songs, from English to Punjabi. “I was fascinated by the way a lyricist would tell a story or how a song could match a person’s emotions.” Deep wrote his first song, ‘Dil Sada Legaye’, at just 13-yearsold and had his music produced

by DJ Dally. Although he is relatively new on the scene, the lyricist urges people to listen to his debut song, ‘Nachdi Vekh Ke’ which symbolises happiness and is in dedication to his family and friends for their continued support. Last, but by no means least, is Mr T.S. Having begun producing music at the tender age of 14, the composer released four mixtapes to various outlets across the region and even made it into the Top 10 most viewed pages in MySpace history. Having initially been involved in grime, R&B and Hip Hop, Mr T now has his sights set on a more traditional genre of music. He said: “I have done production work on most genres as I love to experiment but now it’s time to hold focus and follow the music I've been brought up by and influenced by, bhangra. “Music runs through the family and threw the blood. I have the passion and desire to succeed and fulfill my dreams and set the U.K. Asian Music scene on Fire.”

Jay Sean, Juggy D & Rishi Rich trio bring brand new collaboration sometimes, but all of us always knew we'd do something again eventually. We're like brothers so it would be inevitable!" Jay Sean's fourth album 'Neon' hits stores and iTunes this week in the UK. The album features the hit single 'Mars' featuring Rick Ross, which is currently climbing US radio charts rapidly,'Breakadawn' Featuring Busta Rhymes and 'All On Ya Body' featuring fast rising star Ace Hood. Jay Sean was the first Asian artist to go to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in America, and is to date the only British artist in history to have number 1 Billboard songs on both the English and Spanish Charts! Juggy D has been touring the world over the past few years and has gained an amazing following.

His face adorns advertising hoardings across the metro cities in India and he is a regular sight on TV across the sub-continent. He enjoyed global success with his recent album aptly entitled 'Punjabi Rockstar' and has collaborated with the creme de la creme of the music industry. Almost two decades on and Rishi Rich still mesmerises audiences with his stupendous productions. Rishi is currently working on completing his latest album, for which he has garnered much support from established international and UKbased artists. Unsurprisingly, Rishi has begun realising his passion for film scoring and has been selected to score and produce the soundtrack for three British films this year! Watch this space!

PROMISING: Arjun (pictured) snapped up by the famous 'Why This Kolaveri Di' song producer

Famous 'Kolaveri' producer Anirudh teams up with British Asian talent for new Indian film soundtrack! After delivering back to back hits in South Indian films '3' and 'Ethir Neechal', one of India's young rising production talents is back with his 3rd film album. After the phenomenal global success of 'Why This Kolaveri Di', which has over 80 million hits on YouTube, producer Anirudh Ravichander is back this summer with songs from the forthcoming Tamil movie release 'Vanakkam Chennai'. Lead song 'Oh Penne' has been given an international flavour, which sees Anirudh team up with British R&B sensation Arjun and

producer Charles Bosco. Having discovered the British duo following the incredible success of Arjun's UK remix of 'Why This Kolaveri Di', Anirudh invited them to work on new music in India, fusing his South Indian film style with their unique British R&B sounds. The 'Oh Penne' (International Version) will be part of the official soundtrack of 'Vanakkam Chennai', releasing on Sony Music India. The song heavily features Arjun's trademark slick pop vocals, with rewritten English lyrics, over a

laid back beat with additional Tamil vocals adding an authentic international feel to it, the culmination of a unique east meets west collaboration. The original Tamil version, of 'Oh Penne', also produced by Anirudh, was sung by Vishal Dadlani, one half of Bollywood's hit duo Vishal & Shekhar, responsible for some of the most successful Bollywood songs in the last decade. Arjun's vocals also feature with Vishal on the original version of the song. 'Oh Penne' is the first of a new wave of international music set to

feature in the growing South Indian film industry 'Kollywood', spear-headed by British duo Arjun and Charles Bosco. Producer Bosco now has credits in several Tamil films and will be continuing his work in India and

London this year. He has also teamed up with the Co-Founder and Chairman of Lebara Mobile, Ratheesh Yoganathan, to launch some exciting projects for the youth via the Bosco Academy in the near future.

FILM: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag DIRECTED BY: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra GENRE: Drama STAR CAST: Farhan Akhtar, Sonam Kapoor, Art Malik, Rebecca Breeds In true Olympic spirit, athlete Milkha Singh, aka ‘The Flying Sikh’ is set to achieve new feats when his incredible life story is given the silver screen treatment in “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.” Many recall Milkha Singh as a world champion in the 400 meters, who infamously lost the penultimate race of his life - the 400 meters final at the Rome Olympics. Milkha Singh's life is a portrait of professional triumph over personal tragedy. The film attempts to understand a catastrophic loss that was deemed a sure victory and explores through the darkness of disgrace Milkha Singh’s redemption and catharsis that came when he confronted his past. This iridescent tale winds through the plagues of a bloody

civil war where Milkha's family were brutally killed during the violent and tumultuous IndiaPakistan Partition era resulting in a lost childhood, homelessness, to a life of petty crime and victories hard won and easily lost. The young Milkha builds his character by enlisting in the Indian Army, and through his Ustaad (teacher) learns some of life’s most precious lessons,

that being to build his human spirit with perseverance, hard work and discipline. From his Army days, Milkha becomes a formidable runner with an awe-inspiring 96.5 percent winning ratio. Globally recognised as the ‘Flying Sikh’ and India’s original sports hero, Milkha Singh’s life is a colourful portrait of professional triumph over personal tragedy. RELEA

EUROPEAN PREMIERE

FOR SUBARU WRX CONCEPT

The Subaru WRX concept vehicle – first shown earlier this year at the New York International Auto Show – will make its European debut at the 65th Frankfurt Motor Show on Tuesday 10 September. The WRX concept hints at the final look of the next-generation

WRX, a bold and muscular design giving it a strong on-street presence. Lower, wider and sleeker than previous models, the WRX Concept places an even greater focus on sharp handling, with a low centre of gravity and Subaru’s famous AllWheel Drive system.

Subaru trademark design cues including a pronounced bulge on the bonnet – accompanied by the classic WRX bonnet scoop – which provides clearance for a turbocharged engine and intercooler, while also aiding engine cooling.

The old model is now sold out and the decision was taken earlier this year not to import further volumes. The new-for-2014 Subaru WRX production car, while not confirmed for the UK market, is under consideration. Changing market conditions has allowed Subaru UK

to re-examine the feasibility of bringing the new car into Britain. The WRX concept will be joined on the stand at Frankfurt by the Subaru VIZIV concept, representing Subaru’s future design direction and vision for technological innovation.

BMW TOP OF STOLEN CAR LIST Figures reveal the most stolen and recovered car models of 2012

BY ANUSH ANSARI info@asianexpress.co.uk

According to a leading stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) expert, the BMW X5 was the car most frequently stolen and recovered in 2012. The BMW X5 was also top in 2011, making it a hot favourite among thieves. Luckily owners of this type of car, who are savvy and invest in a Tracker unit, see their chances increase of their BMW being recovered, if it is stolen. Last year Tracker recovered over £12.5 million worth of stolen vehicles, returning them to their owners. Tracker’s 2012 figures show that the Land Rover Vogue and Sport are the second most stolen and recovered vehicles. This is a shift from 2011, when Land Rover was in seventh position on

the most stolen chart. The BMW M3 has also moved up from sixth in 2011, to third place in 2012, showing how thieves’ tastes change too. Back in 2011, BMWs occupied the top three spots, with the 1 Series and 3 Series taking second and third places, respectively. Today, the BMW 3 Series is in equal fourth with the Audi RS4, whilst the 1 Series has slipped out of the top 10 completely. Mercedes was a key target for thieves in 2012, with the SLK and ML in fifth and sixth place, followed by the CLS and E Class in joint seventh. “It’s clear from our latest figures that thieves continue to target prestige models with the most expensive car recovered being worth £70,000,” says Stuart Chapman, Police Liaison Officer for Tracker. “The average value of the cars we recovered in 2012 was just £25,500

and a number were below £5,000, confirming that you don’t have to own a luxury car to be at risk from thieves looking to make a fast profit. Tracker’s Mesh Network also contributed to the recovery of over £4,500,000 worth of stolen vehicles. Tracker stolen vehicle recovery systems work like an electronic homing device. A covert transmitter is hidden in one of several dozen places around the vehicle. There is no visible aerial, so the thief won’t even know it’s there. Unlike other tracking systems, the device works even if the vehicle is hidden in a garage or taken abroad. Tracker is the only vehicle tracking system operated by all police forces in the UK, offering car owners the ultimate in security.

Half of drivers ignore basic advice to prevent deadly tiredness at the wheel Drivers are being advised to take simple steps to avoid falling asleep at the wheel as the holiday season starts and many families prepare for long distance travel to destinations across the UK and Europe. Road safety charity Brake and Direct Line today reveal more than half of drivers (55 per cent) are ignoring basic advice to take rest breaks at least every two hours on long journeys, while one in ten (9 per cent) don't stop at all on long journeys unless they absolutely have to. Many also admit failing to get enough sleep the night before a long journey, as less than half (45 per cent) make sure they get at least seven hours' sleep. Brake and Direct Line are warning families gearing up for long holiday journeys that too little sleep and too few breaks radically affects your ability to drive safely. After five hours' sleep you only have a one in ten chance of staying fully awake on a lengthy journey [1]. The survey of 1,000 drivers from across the UK by Brake and Direct Line showed widespread complacency about the risks of tired drivers on long journeys. It found: Male drivers are far more likely to drive for longer periods without stopping. 14 per cent of male drivers have driven for six hours or more without stopping, compared with 3 per cent of female drivers. Half of male drivers (50 per cent) have driven for four hours or more without stopping, compared with a third (31 per cent) of females. A third of drivers (35 per cent) admit sometimes or always trying to push on if they feel sleepy at the wheel. 38 per cent of males do this compared to 31 per cent of females. Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive, Brake, the road safety charity, said: "A large proportion of the driving public are scarily confident they can push on through on long drives without stopping. In reality, regular breaks - at least every two hours - are essential for staying alert and awake, as is getting plenty of sleep the night before. Sleepiness can catch you unawares at the wheel and it only takes a couple of seconds on a motorway to cause absolute carnage. The summer means long journeys for many families hoping to catch some sun at the coast or abroad. Brake is warning that to make sure you and your loved ones get there safely you need to allow plenty of time to take it easy, take regular rest breaks, and ensure you get a full night's sleep beforehand." Rob Miles, head of Motor at Direct Line, commented: "Tiredness and driving are a deadly combination. Not only is there a risk of falling asleep at the wheel, but when we are tired our reactions and awareness of our surroundings are not as sharp as they would normally be. Whilst tired drivers may think that stopping for a break will increase their journey time, it's not worth the risk to themselves, their passengers or other road users. It is better to get there late than not to arrive at all." The facts Driver tiredness is one of the biggest

killers on our roads. In the UK driver tiredness is estimated to cause one in five deaths on trunk roads [2]. In 2011 in Great Britain it was reported 84 people were killed and 420 suffered serious injuries in tiredness related crashes [3], although the real figure could be higher, because it can be difficult to prove when a crash is caused by a driver falling asleep. They tend to be high-speed crashes, because drivers do not brake before crashing, so the risk of death or serious injury is greater. Calls to government Brake supports recent government proposals to allow drivers who oversleep at motorway service stations to pay for their parking retrospectively to avoid a fine [4]. But it calls for more to be done to help drivers by creating more stopping places for drivers to take a break and more government advertising on the risks of driving tired, raising awareness about the importance of not embarking on a journey while tired, and steps to take if you start to feel drowsy at the wheel. We also need greater crash protection on trunk roads, such as longer crash barriers over bridges, to reduce the severity of crashes if they do happen. Action to tackle tired driving among fleet drivers is also needed because an estimated four in ten tired driver crashes involves a commercial vehicle driver [5]. Brake recommends regular testing of people who drive for work for sleep apnoea, a treatable condition that makes falling asleep at the wheel much more likely, thought to be particularly widespread among HGV drivers [6]. Brake also believes the rules controlling hours that can be driven by truck and bus drivers should be extended to cover fleet drivers in vans and cars. Read about Brake's Wake up! campaign. Driver advice Get plenty of sleep before a journey, plan your journey to include time for adequate rest and don't set out if you are already tired. Take rest breaks at least every two hours for a minimum of 15 minutes. If you feel tired when driving, listen to the warning signs straight away and stop for a break somewhere safe as soon as you can. Sleep ensues faster than you think - trying to fight off sleep by opening the window or listening to the radio puts you at risk of ‘microsleeps', when you nod off for two to 30 seconds without remembering it. Microsleeps can be fatal: at 70mph a driver travels 200m in six seconds. However, fatigue can even affect your ability to drive safely long before microsleeps occur [7]. If you start to feel sleepy while driving stop for at least a 15 minute break somewhere safe. If you drink caffeine, drink two cups of coffee or preferably a high-caffeine energy drink, then take a 10-15 minute snooze. By the time you wake up any caffeine will have kicked in and you may feel alert enough to continue your journey. If you still feel tired, or you still have a long way to go, you should stay put and try to find somewhere to get a good night's sleep. Caffeine is a temporary drug and its

effects do not last long. Sleep is the only long-term cure to tiredness. Case study In April 2008, Mark, 32, from Thetford, Norfolk, was just ten minutes away from home, travelling back after visiting friends in Hertfordshire. The driver behind Mark watched him drive steadily for around a mile and then saw his car drift across the road. As Mark swerved to return to the correct side of the road he drove into a 40 tonne vehicle driving in the opposite direction. He died instantly. Barry Love, step father of Mark, said: "I have driven a lot for work so was aware of the effect that tiredness can have when driving, but Mark's death really brought this home. It is awful to think that something so easily avoidable took Mark away from us, and caused such pain and devastation to our family. The issue of driver fatigue needs far more public awareness, as tiredness can come on very quickly. If you notice any signs of tiredness before setting off, please rethink whether the journey is essential, or if you're already driving, take a rest as soon as you possibly can." To arrange interviews with Barry or Brake, contact Siobhan MacMahon on 01484 550 063 or email news@brake.org.uk. Brake Brake is an independent road safety charity. Brake exists to stop the five deaths and 63 serious injuries that happen on UK roads every day and to care for families bereaved and seriously injured in road crashes. Brake runs awareness-raising campaigns, community education programmes, events such as Road Safety Week (1824 November 2013), and a Fleet Safety Forum, providing advice to companies. Brake's support division cares for road crash victims through a helpline and other services. Road crashes are not accidents; they are devastating and preventable events, not chance mishaps. Calling them accidents undermines work to make roads safer, and can cause insult to families whose lives have been torn apart by needless casualties. Incredible India clinch bronze

India’s junior hockey team made history earlier this week as they clinched their first ever bronze medal in the women’s Hockey World Cup. A 3-2 penalty victory over England, in Monchengladbach, Germany, sealed their podium finish with England once again finishing in fourth spot, in a repeat performance of their last campaign. Star player, Rani Rampal, was on hand to guide her side to victory with India’s solitary strike in open play as well as striking twice in the shoot-out. Rani opened the scoring in the 13th minute when she scored a fine field goal, and it almost looked like being enough to seal the victory until Anna Toman levelled the scores in the 55th. The scores remained level, therefore forcing a shoot-out situation and with both sides squandering a number of opportunities to edge the game, it was Navneet Kaur who scored the all important sudden death goal to make history for the nation. The Netherlands were crowned winners in the final of the tournament after a 4-2 shoot-out victory over Argentina to retain the ERGO Hockey Junior World Cup.

“For me, if more kids are off the street then it is a better situation for everyone.” The club is now appealing for more parents to get involved with the project to help train the children and offer support for the club. England’s top badminton ace, Rajiv Ouseph, has been eliminated on the opening day of the World Cup in China, whilst his British counterparts have fared slightly better. Ouseph, ranked 25th in the world, faced off against the Malaysian 15th seed, Chong Wei Feng, yet was unable to find his form as he crashed to a 21-11, 21-15 defeat. In his debut international competition, Wei Feng made light work of the English Commonwealth silver medallist, with his only troubles coming from the faulty scoreboard. Fellow Brit, Toby Penty produced a confident display in Guangzhou to beat American, 85th seed, Howard Shu, 21-16 21-16. The left-hander, from Walton-onThames, was ranked ten positions above his opponent yet twice had to recover in the second game, from 105 and 12-9 down, to clinch the victory. Elsewhere, English mixed-double champions, Chris Langridge and Heather Olver, were shocked in the first round of the doubles, losing 2220 13-21 21-13 to Swedish pair Nico Ruponen and Amanda Hogstrom. Meanwhile, Lauren Smith and Gabrielle White made a winning start, beating Indian duo Aparna Balan and N Siki Reddy 21-15 21-17.

Funding for local cricket club

FUNDED: Gledhow Cricket Club has received £12,000 in funding for new equipment

Children knocked for six for improvements to cricket facilities

By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Children in East and North-East Leeds will soon benefit from improved sporting facilities at a local, popular cricket club. Councillors Sharon Hamilton (Labour, Moortown), Asghar Khan (Labour, Burmantofts & Richmond Hill) and colleagues on the Inner North East and Inner East Area Committees, have approved funding totalling £12,000 for improvements to Gledhow Cricket Club. The funding will go towards the building of a new artificial cricket practice area including nets and steel cages. These new facilities are urgently needed with the club currently struggling to accommodate the increasing numbers of young people who want to play cricket. Councillors hope this funding will help the Club to cater for the ever-increasing number of children attending classes at the site. Councillor Sharon Hamilton explains how the club has gone from strength to strength yet struggled with the demand for places from children, which is why this latest investment is so crucial. She said: “These improvements will help the Club to expand and allow even

more children to benefit from the firstrate classes provided. We are delighted to have been able to fund these works.” Councillor Asghar Khan added: “The Club is a champion for community cricket and it is well deserved to have received commendations from the English Cricket Board. “Our funding will help them to provide even more facilities to train the next generation of Yorkshire and England cricketers.” Gledhow Cricket Club was set up in 2011 in response to local needs in Harehills as over 70 children had been attending community cricket sessions in the area yet there was no local club that they could join afterwards. This all changed when community Group ‘CATCH’ combined with West Yorkshire Police to officially established two junior teams at Gledhow CC. The junior teams have now expanded and the Club is attracting young people from Roundhay and Chapeltown and has received a local award for building partnerships in the community. It has also been recognised by the English Cricket Board, which wants to use their strategies as a national template for increasing participation in grass roots cricket, especially in disadvantaged and deprived communities.

Rehman tackles Former Bradford City captain launches new campaign to get British Asians into football Zesh Rehman has said the time for talking is over, as his community foundation begins tackling the issue of the misrepresentation of British Asians in England’s top leagues. 'Sidelined-2-Sidelines' is a bespoke coach education & mentoring programme for 16-25 year olds launched by the Zesh Rehman foundation last month. It is specifically designed to increase the number of British Asian coaches who can act as role models and help develop provision in predominantly Asian communities. The former Bradford City, QPR, Norwich and Fulham defender is one of very few Pakistani players, raised in England, to forge a career out of professional football and is a key supporter of pushing cultural diversity in the sport. Currently plying his trade in Hong Kong for top side, Kitchee FC, he hopes his Englandbased organisation can be a catalyst for promoting participation for ethnic communities. “The whole thing is about doing rather than talking,” said Rehman. “What we are doing with the Zesh Rehman Foundation, in collaboration with the PFA and Premier League is trying to get more British Asians in the game. It is something which I am

very passionate about. “Hopefully we can reduce the number of racist incidents and get more kids from different backgrounds involved because the UK is so diverse now. Any form of racism stems from ignorance and a lack of education.” The S-2-S project was launched in partnership with community departments from London clubs, QPR and Chelsea, and Rehman hopes it will encourage more people to take an interest in developing their skills on and off the pitch. He added: “In the first instance we are just trying to get more numbers in more areas of the game, whether that is coaching, refereeing, attending games, in the media or finance departments. "Ultimately, we want to see a greater representation on the pitch. By doing it this way, firstly what we are trying to do is make them feel they are part of a club and they are no different to anyone else. “But football has an extraordinary power to bring people together. We are trying to use that in a positive way.” Rehman recounts his own experiences with Bradford City and believes the clubs form last season highlights the fact that there are British Asian’s who are passionate about English

Marvellous Mohit Mohit Sharma had a debut to remember for India as he starred in their fourth straight one day international (ODI) victory against Zimbabwe to go 4-0 up in the five game series. With figures of two for 26, Mohit played a crucial role in eliminating the middle order, as he bowled Malcolm Waller (35) and Sikandar Raza (7). The hosts were never able to match the superiority of their opponents as they were all out for 144 runs in just 42 overs. In return India surpassed the set target in just 30 overs, with Zimbabwe taking just the one wicket, as Cheteshwar Pujara was bowled by Tendai Chatara for just 13 runs. For Mohit, the chance to play on the international stage, following on from his impressive IPL campaign, is one he is very grateful for. “It all feels like a dream,” the 24-year-old said. “But I have worked on my bowling and it is showing. I

am ready to do well in whatever opportunity I am going to get. I was just focusing on keeping things simple and sticking to basics. I did not want to try too many things and it worked for me today.

He added: “It is difficult to bowl in Powerplays but we work hard in practice sessions. “We create match situations during training and bowl a lot and that has helped in matches. And that is why we don't feel

much pressure in matches. “Playing under Dhoni (for Chennai Super Kings) and in pressure conditions has taught me a lot. I am just carrying that experience into the international level."

Khan splits with manager Bolton’s superstar set to tackle ‘new projects’ Promoter Eddie Hearn famously had a ‘war of words’ with Vali in 2011, saying he had ‘cost the boxer £1.5million’ due to a pay-per-view fight, yet this split is believed to be purely mutual, with both parties taking on different projects. Amir Khan, said: “I would like to sincerely thank Asif for all his hard work and wish him the very best for the future.” Shah Khan, father of Amir, added his appreciation, as he said: “Asif has done a tremendous job since Amir turned professional and I would like to express my gratitude to him.” Since the parting, Vali has taken to social media side Twitter to announce his future plans, tweeting on Thursday: ‘announcement will be made soon’ regarding his future in the sport. In a statement released following the split Asif added: “I would like to wish Amir and his family the very best for the future. I have enjoyed my time working with them and plan to remain in boxing as I explore new exciting ventures.” Speaking to Behind the Gloves, Asif emphasised the mutual respect between the two parties. “I don’t need to give Amir any advice he is a hard working individual and when he sets his goals he will go out and get them, his desire is to beat the best and he will, it’s just a matter of time,” he said. “I am sure we will cross paths in the boxing world and I have the utmost respect for the family, I wish them the very best for the future.”
