SUCCESS: Razan Alsous set up her own cheese business earlier this year and won a World Cheese Award for her halloumi produce
As the UK continues to fall in love with food delicacies from around the world, one Syrian refugee has made it her goal to bring halloumi cheese to the tables of Britain and guess what... she’s winning. Arriving in the UK just two years ago, Razan Alsous - a determind mum-of-three, set up her own Kirklees-based cheese factory. The 31-year-old has a background in microbiology and upon moving to Huddersfield, decided to try her hand at running her own business with a Syrian favourite at the heart of operations. “Halloumi is a product which is very popular back in Syria and we eat it every morning for breakfast,” she said. “After conducting some research on the internet, I found that Britain was actually the second biggest consumer of halloumi cheese in the whole of Europe, only Sweden was ahead.

Occupying Barclays By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
More than 30 people descended down on Barclays bank in Leeds last weekend as a day of action was seen across the country as part of the United Nation’s International Day of Solidarity with Palestine. Members of the Leeds-based group, Leeds Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions (BDS) staged a demonstration outside the bank on Albion Street, in protest against Barclay’s investments in Israel. More than 1.7million people have signed an Avaaz petition calling on the bank to divest its
£1.9million holding in Elbit Systems, the Israeli arms company that supplies drones that the Israeli military has been documented to have used in the killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Demonstrators handed out informative leaflets and spoke with the public about their actions which forced the bank to close for an-hour-and-a-half. Debbie Locke of Leeds BDS, said: “We have shut down Barclays to show that we will not allow the atrocities Israel commits against the Palestinian people to be funded from here in the UK. “Barclays' own investments in
Elbit Systems, an arms manufacturer which creates drones that helped kill over 2,000 people in Gaza this year. “They were one of the chief supporters of South African apartheid until the global antiapartheid movement took them to task and now they want to support Israeli apartheid but the Palestine solidarity movement is taking action.” Similar protests were also held across the country with action taking place in Manchester, Bradford, London, Brighton and more than ten other towns and cities. Last week, the government announced a second review of licenses for arms exports to Israel after it discovered 12 instances in which weapons containing components produced in the UK
may have been used in the Summer 2014 attacks on Gaza. “The government have announced a new review into arms sales to Israel, but Vince Cable's own review earlier this summer already found arms licences for equipment likely to have been used against the people of Gaza,” said Kat Hobbs from the Campaign Against the Arms

Lotherton Hall’s makeover
An exciting refurbishment programme has now officially started at one of the city’s most popular visitor attractions. Once completed, this work will support the ambition of Lotherton Hall, which is one of Leeds most historic homes, to become a major museum of fashion and textiles through the revamp of its current exhibition spaces. The redevelopment of the Fashion Galleries will create an up to date 21st century gallery space; with modern cases, improved lighting and the chance to utilise technology, which will allow opportunities to include new elements like film and sound in the galleries. When concluded, Lotherton Hall will become one of the largest spaces in the north of England to provide a regular programme of fashion and textile exhibitions by having a changing show each year.
Students take on Leeds dragons
Young people taking part in a national citizenship programme faced some local ‘dragons’ earlier this month, to put their social enterprise ideas to the test. Leeds City Council’s youth service brought a Dragon’s Den style panel to 109 young people currently taking part in the council’s National Citizen Service (NCS) programme. The youngsters presented ideas for a social action project to the panel of ‘dragons’, which consisted of city councillors, business and charity professionals. The panel were able to provide the youngsters with useful feedback and offered opportunities to the teams of young people to help their projects become success stories. Each team of young people prepared a ten minute presentation to introduce their ideas, outline how their project would work and explain what additional assistance they were seeking. The young people were then quizzed by the dragons, who offered the teams further ideas and shared relevant contacts with them.
Inspiring scholar preaches ‘love’ before ‘religion’ Around one-thousand people, consisting of both men and women, from all schools of thought, embarked on Bradford City’s Valley Parade Stadium earlier this week to listen to the inspirational words of world-renowned Islamic scholar, Maulana Tariq Jameel. Returning to the city following a moving sermon and speech at Orissa Dining back in August, the scholar once again enlightened audiences with his words of love, tolerance and religion on Wednesday 3rd December. The invite-only event welcomed some of the most influential businessmen and women, alongside numerous professionals, who had the chance to listen to the scholar’s powerful speeches on some of the world’s most pressing issues. Organised by Shakeel Shah, director of Shaks Specialist Cars Ltd and also cousin of Maulana Tariq Jameel, along with his associates, the night was deemed a huge success with an awe-inspiring atmosphere. Speaking after the night, Mr Shah said: “To have Maulana Tariq Jameel return to Bradford is something we were really excited about. “The turnout on the night was fantastic with around one-thousand people coming to hear the speech from all over the UK and some guests had arrived from Europe. Everyone was taken aback by the powerful messages. “It brought tears to many people’s eyes as the scholar spoke
of today’s world and the challenges people have to face elsewhere compared to their lifestyles. “He spoke of the importance of children and parents respecting each other equally.” Mr Shah and his friends, who made this event happen and made it a success, thanked everybody for their attendance and hoped they understood the loved words from Maulana Tariq Jameel. The famous scholar’s speech was often so moving that the scholar himself was forced to speak through tears as the realisation of his message was felt by all in the room. This latest visit was orchestrated after the Maulana had requested a return to Bradford following the last sermon earlier in the year. Saying he was once again overwhelmed with the love he received from the guests who turned-out on the night, Maulana Tariq Jameel added that it was reassuring to see so many affluent professionals in attendance, from all schools of thought. Nadim Hanif, Managing Director of the Asian Express Newspaper, was present at the latest event and having previously seen Maulana Tariq Jameel speak in Bradford, he said it was another moving evening. “It was an inspiring speech and one which was presented in a way I have never really experienced before,” he said. “Through my own experiences, I have witnessed some Maulana’s figuratively force religion down your throat, yet Maulana Tariq Jameel was much more soothing in his words about the beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the wider world. “His message about the importance of ‘love’ was very moving and something which was well received by the audience.”

Turning her life around Cover story continued “The problem I found was that quality halloumi cheese was not available in all seasons in the UK market yet there is a demand for the product all year round. “It is becoming a trendy food here and so I decided to try and set up a halloumi cheese business which sourced all ingredients from local suppliers.” Despite only starting production earlier this year, Razan’s halloumi cheese has already proven to be a huge hit with the public and critics alike, as it was awarded a prestigious food award last month. At the BBC Good Food Show in London, more than 2,700 products were nominated for the top honour, and it was Razan’s locally-

produced cheeses that were awarded a Bronze accolade in the 2014 World Cheese Awards. Explaining how she always had faith in the local produce, the dedicated mum who is now settled in Linthwaite with her family said: “Before we went down to the ceremony, I was confident in our cheese because we knew that it was a really good product. “It wasn’t until we got there and saw all these different cheeses from around the world that I began to get a bit nervous. There were really big businesses who had huge pieces of cheese with them and we just had our little box of halloumi. “When I heard that we won the award, it was great and the whole experience of the ceremony confirmed our cheese was one of the best.” Razan added that the success of the business would not have been possible
without the support of her husband, Raghid Sandouq, yet there wouldn’t even be a Yorkshire Dama Cheese company, had no backing been made possible by local bodies. With little capital behind her back in 2012, Razan initially approached the job centre for advice about setting up her own business and was soon put in touch with the West Yorkshire Enterprise Agency (WYEA). After drawing up business plans and conducting research, she was placed on the New Enterprise Allowance - a Government scheme which helps those out of work to start their own business. With the support of a business mentor, she produced a business plan and within 12 months of extensive research, sampling and dozens of recipes, the business was finally born. “My motto is that nothing is impossible, especially when there are people out there who can help you,” she said. “The financial help from the New Enterprise Allowance is small in value but big in opportunity – it gave me the ability to buy the equipment, start my business and turn my dream into reality.”

Festive fire show
Shoppers were treated this week to an amazing outdoor fire display as part of the city’s exciting ‘Magical Leeds’ programme. A stretch of Briggate was brought to a standstill on Thursday as large crowds gathered to watch four special performances throughout the evening by multi-award winning Australian fire dance duo, 'Flame Oz'. Those in attendance were left enthralled by a fast-paced and thrilling routine, which ignited the city centre’s night sky with its breathtaking choreography. Also taking to the stage were the ‘Two Calling Birds’ from the 'Twelve Days of Christmas', whose display featuring white feathers and fanned tails, proved to be a big hit.
Winter bin collections
Leeds City Council is writing to the city’s residents this week to flag up changes to their bin collections over the Christmas period. Bin collections have been rearranged to accommodate the upcoming public holidays meaning some bins will be picked up a day earlier while other residents will have their bin picked up a day later than usual. Bin collection days can be checked throughout the year at www.leeds.gov.uk/yourbinday. To help residents cope with the extra recycling and waste created over the festive period the council’s eight recycling centres will be open from 8am to 4pm throughout December. They only close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

West Yorkshire’s community champions were thrust into the spotlight earlier this week as the fifth annual Hamara Community Awards were staged in Bradford. With more than 270 people in attendance, the evening of recognition was organised by the Hamara Healthy Living Centre in Beeston and deemed a huge success by all in attendance. Habib Khan, speaking on behalf of the Hamara team, said the awards were a great way of paying tribute to some of society’s unsung heroes. “When we held our first Hamara Community Awards, we always had a strategy to try and make it into a big annual event but none of us could have imagined how amazing this ceremony is now,” he said. “It is always a very proud moment for us to be able to congratulate many of the local unsung heroes who don’t get the credit they deserve. “This year’s group of award winners are a great bunch of people. The work they have done has had a big positive impact on the local community.” The 2014 Female Achievement Award was issued to Bethany Hare, who set up her own charity, the Smile Foundation, three years ago when she was just 12-yearsold. young team of A from entrepreneurs Dewsbury have been showing they don’t need a boardroom to launch a successful business with their company ‘Ethical Print’ setting up in their school’s classroom. students from Seven Westborough High School are taking part in the ‘Tycoon in Schools’ project – a enterprise national for young competition aspiring business people across the country. Developed by former Dragon’s Den star, Peter Jones CBE, the local academics set up their business in the hope of raising money for five charities and promoting community events through a newsletter. With funding being received from local businesses, which pay the team for advertising space, Ethical print has proven to be extremely successful, raising around £2,300 from just a £330 start-up loan. Initially setting a target of 30 businesses, the team have just passed 45 and have greater ambitions as they push on, with a website and mobile app in the pipeline for future developments. As part of the national competition, in which almost 200 schools and colleges are competing in, the Westborough representatives are in fourth position with a profit ratio of 597 per cent. Year 10 pupil, Muhammad
Yunus, said the group were working well together and he was immediately interested in joining the project when he first heard about it. “Last year, Mr Patel told us about the Tycoon in Schools programme and I knew I wanted to take part in it straight away,” he said. “I really like business and so far we have all been developing our enterprise skills which have helped our business succeed so much so far.” Teammate, Lohash LubsirLatif, added: “This project gives us the chance to get involved with real business and real money. “It is fun but we must make sure that we are always doing the best we can because we are also representing the school in the competition.” Money raised by Ethical print will be allocated equally to the RSPCA, Salvation Army, Age Concern, Macmillan Cancer Research and Water Aid. Lukman Patel the Head of Business & Ethics at Westborough said the team’s work-rate had been ‘brilliant’ since the start of the project and they deserved all the plaudits they were receiving. “For the Year 10 Business group to get to the final stages of this prestigious competition is a testimony of the outstanding teaching in the Business faculty and the continued enthusiasm shown by all our students,” he said.”

Sweet treats for Food bank
More than 250 advent calendars donated to those in need Thoughtful junior school pupils from the Grammar School at Leeds have rallied round to donate a huge stack of advent calendars to a local food bank, aiming to bring a daily treat to all of Leeds’ families. The children, aged between seven and 11-years-old, collected 267 advent calendars with the help of fellow pupils, teachers and parents, before they were handed over to the Leeds (North) Food Bank. With demand for help from food banks expected to soar during the festive holidays, the chocolates are hoped to provide a small delight on top
of the essential produce. Leeds (North) Food Bank is one of a growing number of providers of emergency food across the city which is run under the banner of the Trussell Trust. The organisation relies on volunteers and donations of food from individuals and businesses to supply families with food parcels at times of need. Catherine Dodds, deputy head at GSAL Junior School, said it was a great initiative for the children to get behind and praised their efforts. “We sent out an appeal in our weekly message to parents and the children
responded with great enthusiasm, recognising that for some families even small luxuries like Advent calendars are unaffordable,” Ms Dodds said. “They enjoy that little treat every day and were sad to think that some children might have to go without.” Year 6, pupil Lizzie Bell, helped with the collection and added: “We are lucky enough to have Advent calendars and enjoy opening the door each day to see what chocolate there is inside. “It gets more exciting every day nearer to Christmas and we wanted to help other children enjoy it too.”

Trees! Green fingered volunteers surpass huge milestone
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Twenty giving volunteers from Sheffield picked up their shovels and put on their gardening gloves last weekend as they helped the nationwide youth group surpass a huge milestone. Under the name, ‘Muslims for Humanity’, the volunteers were joined by representatives from Sheffield City Council and the local community as their 100,000th tree was planted. Similar initiatives were also being held in St Albans, Hartlepool and Derby during the day of action with more than 300 volunteers taking part nationally. As a central part of the group’s faith
is to serve the environment through various means, the project was derived as an active way of getting youths involved with nature. Children as young as five-years-old have been involved in the project since its inception with parents on hand to also help in voluntary roles. Shahzad Ahmad, an AMYA youth leader, said to reach the 100,000 tree milestone was a huge achievement that would have an ‘enormous’ impact on the environment. Explaining further about the initiative, he said: “Our volunteers have been working hard to plant as many trees as possible. “We are committed to doing our bit to improve the environment and beautify the local communities we live

Today graduation, tomorrow wedding Husband and wife to-be celebrate degree success
A loved-up couple from Bradford received an early wedding present earlier this week as the pair graduated together from of West Yorkshire’s leading colleges. Mohammed Zain Hussain and Nafeesa Jamil, have been studying together since meeting in school when they were just 13-years-old. After their strong friendship blossomed into love four years later, the pair completed their GCSEs together before moving on to successfully study their A-Levels. And now, following further years of study, Mohammed and Nafeesa have just officially graduated from Bradford college, with both academics completing the same Ba(Hons) degree in Diet, Nutrition and Health. With wedding bells set to chime in the New Year, the double graduation was just the start of an exciting couple of months for the couple who can expect further

Speaking before the ceremony, she said: “I’m just really happy to be here with Mohammed and all my friends and family. It’s going to be mind-blowing getting the certificate on stage. “I’m a bit nervous, but I think it’s amazing; the hard work has paid off.” Mohammed added: “It’s special for me as I’m the first sibling in my family to graduate so it’s a big thing for me and my family.” After finishing their courses earlier in the year, the husband and wife to-be have both already begun taking steps into their next future professions. Mohammed has since gone on to secure a full-time position working in the nutrition industry whilst Nafeesa has continued with her studies progressing on to a Masters in Nutrition. Iconic Bradford eatery to celebrate huge milestone
years of Sweet Centre Restaurant By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Over the past 50 years, Bradford has seen some monumental changes, yet one thing that remains as popular today, as the day it was founded, is Manningham’s world renowned Sweet Centre and Restaurant. It was on Saturday 12th December 1964 that the famous establishment first opened its doors to the public, bringing Asian sweets and Asian cuisine to Yorkshire for the very first time. With Pakistani and Indian migrants arriving in Bradford to work in the city’s mills, a new market was being developed with no dining establishment catering for foods from the South Asian continent. So, when brothers, Abdul Rehman and Mohammed Bashir, first coined the idea of setting up an eatery to serve the rising Asian M Bashir
population, the concept of the Sweet Centre Cafe and Restaurant was born. Pulling together all their savings, the siblings set up the business at 110 Lumb Lane in the mid-60s, and with three generations of the same family now managing operations at the site, it has remained a much-loved eatery for people from all backgrounds. As the business continued to thrive in early years, the Sweet Centre became a household name. Despite being replicated by many other food outlets throughout the country, they maintain that they are the original. Younger brother, Abdul Aziz joined the business in the mid-70s and helped to continue the restaurant and cafe’s growth through the continuous production of Asian snacks, sweets and confectionaries, handmade by specialist chefs from India and Pakistan. Over the next 40 years, the Sweet Centre received visits from Pakistani and Indian dignitaries, from politicians to religious figureheads and artists to famous film stars, yet it remains the local public who have helped establish it as one of the city’s most treasured establishments. Mr Bashir and Mr Rehman’s

legacy continues today through the original Sweet Centre, whilst second generation sons have helped grow the name across Britain with seven catering outlets now set up across the nation. Even the grandson of the founders is heavily involved with the business, currently managing the original Sweet Centre Cafe and Restaurant alongside his father, Dr Z.Ali. Later this week, the worldfamous business will be celebrating its 50th year of existence and with the site proving as popular today as it has over the last half-century, there is no doubt that another 50 years are just around the corner.

FREE: More than 25 children rode away on their new set of wheels, donated to the school by On Trak
Pupils at a primary school in Bradford have been climbing into the saddles of their new bikes this week after being given a free set of wheels by a local community group. More than 25 Children from Lapage Primary School’s Nursery were just the latest recipients of bikes from the On Trak team’s ‘Be Safe, Keep Safe’ project. The initiative, operating out of St Enoch’s Garage in Wibsey, has seen over 500 bikes handed out to schools and youth groups since establishing three years ago. Collecting them from Bradford Council, the garage then restores the bicycles to a quality standard, with the help of young volunteers, before they are sent off to be given a new lease of life. Asif Iqbal and Amrik Singh are two learning mentors at Lapage who were on hand to help give out the bicycles to children and parents on Wednesday 26th November. Mr Singh explained further about the relationship between

the school and On Trak, which has been teaching children about road safety for two-anda-half years. “Here at Lapage primary school and nursery, we believe that pupils should have the opportunity to explore and develop their social skills at an early age,” Mr Singh said. “Therefore, the school has networked with OnTrak and Bradford Council to run the ‘School Cycling Awareness project’ which has been a success for over two and a half years. “This incentive, with the free bikes, is one of the first to take place in the West Yorkshire area, and for the children it offers them a healthy lifestyle whilst also learning how to enjoy riding outdoors safely.” Adrian Woods MBE is the Operations Manager at On Trak and works with children, who have an interest in mechanics and engineering, at his Bradford Garage. The charity aspect of St Enoch’s Garage is something Mr Woods is very passionate about and said he has been helping restore bikes, with the help of students, for three years now. “We can get around 100 bikes a month handed over to us from Bradford Council of which around 90 per cent are recycled and sent off to schools or youth groups,” he explained. “What we cannot use, or cannot fix, we keep for spare parts so everything comes in useful.” Adding about the importance of giving children the chance to learn about road safety from an early age, Mr Woods said: “If we can save one life in ten years of teaching, then that is a success in my eyes. “Lapage have been very active in their road safety project and their WHEELS: Pupils are all smiles as children deserve these they get to try out their new bikes bikes, which will be great for them to use at home or school.”

Space Ace SUCCESS: Manjari Dhar receives her Royal Astronomical Society Award from GSAL’s Dr D’Vali
Star pupil earns national astronomy award
A student from Leeds whose exam results were already regarded as ‘out of this world’ has received yet another glowing accolade this past week for her achievements in GCSE astronomy. Manjari Dhar, lower sixth pupil at the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), received her award from the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) for being one of the top students in the country, who studied astronomy. The spaceenthusiast’s grade put her amongst the 12 best results nationally and she was presented with a certificate by physics teacher, Michelle D’Vali last week. What is even more impressive for Manjari is that she had to study
the subject in her own time, on top of ten other classes which she was already taking, in which she also achieved all AStar grades. At GSAL, students can start the two-year course for GCSE astronomy in year 10 or 11 and are expected to attend the classes in their own time with the help of teaching staff. Manjari was part of a class taught by physics teachers Michelle D’Vali and Derek Fry, in two lunchtime lessons per week, which also involved completing independent study. “I was really surprised to receive the award as it was very unexpected,” Manjari said. “I was also very proud and grateful to my amazing teachers: Mr Fry and Dr D’Vali. “My favourite sections of the astronomy course were learning about the evolution of stars and the possibilities for life on other planets and in
other galaxies.” Dr D’Vali said the student’s achievements were a great reflection of weeks of hard work and added that she more than deserved the national recognition. “It’s a big commitment to take on the astronomy GCSE, and Manjari went above and beyond, completing some outstanding practical work,” he said. “All those nights spent outside clearly paid off.” Mr Fry, who was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society over 30 years ago, added: “This is welldeserved for Manjari to have her achievement recognised by the most prestigious astronomical society in the world.” With glowing grades across the board in GCSEs, Manjari is now studying five A-Levels and says she hopes to go on to study either maths or natural science at university.

Everyone can get ‘IntoUniversity’ Charity wants all children to aim for university
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
The University of Leeds has joined up with a national charity in the hope of giving every young person the chance to experience what university is really like. IntoUniversity has established the Leeds East Centre in Harehills where children from the age of seven up to sixth formers are able to receive special sessions aimed at improving aspirations and delivering academic support. Despite the official launch not set to take place until February 2015, dozens of families have already signed up to the service with children benefiting from the afterschool classes. Six schools in the city have also signed up to receive support from the charity, whether that is through class visits to universities or IntoUniversity staff coming into schools to discuss future goals and current studies. The IntoUniversity charity has been established for more than a decade and already runs similar centres elsewhere, including in London, Brighton and Bristol yet the Leeds site is the first of its kind in the North of England. A second site is hoped to open in South Leeds in 2015, again operating for pupils in areas of deprivation and with lower attainment levels. It is IntoUniversity’s main objective to ensure every child has the opportunity to attend university regardless of their backgrounds. In Leeds, just 12 per cent of young people who receive free school meals currently
As we all know its that time of the year were we all get a nasty COLD or FLU, and it can really get in the way of our beauty .It leaves us looking run down and the skin looking dull. So here are some home remedies to banish that nasty flu...
Cold Remedy #1: Inhale steam to ease your congestion and drippy nose. Hold your head over a pot of boiling water and breathe through your nose. Moisture from a hot shower with the door closed, saline nasal spray, or a room humidifier is just as helpful to ease congestion.
progress to higher education. IntoUniversity centres are proven to succeed with 71 per cent of young people involved in the programme progressing to higher education. Rosie Kenwood, the centre’s team leader, said it was vital for all children to know they have the option of pursuing higher education. “I don’t want any young person to write off going to university,” she said. “I understand that not everyone will go but it has to be an option open to all and that is what we are trying to tell children through IntoUniversity. “Through this charity, children, from primary school upwards, will have the chance of visiting universities to learn more about the environment and the chances in front of them. “There will also be personal mentors for some students from next year which will help pupils from as young as primary school age. “Often children who we work with are the first generation of their family to go to university so it is nice to have someone on hand who can offer advice about what to expect.” Children enrolled with the charity currently receive academic support from after school homework clubs, and mentoring schemes. IntoUniversity had hoped that in the first year, 400 young people from primary and secondary schools in East Leeds would be interested in signing up. It had 900 students as a target for its third year, but that number is already being quickly closed in on now.
Cold Remedy #2: Blow your nose
often, but do it the proper way. It's important to blow your nose regularly when you have a cold rather than sniffling mucus back into your head. The best way to blow your nose is to press a finger over one nostril while you blow gently to clear it, as when you blow hard, pressure can carry germs back into your ear passages, causing earache.
Cold Remedy #3: Use nasal sprays
or make your own using salt water rinse to irrigate your nose. Saltwater rinsing helps break nasal congestion while also removing virus particles and bacteria from your nose. Here's a popular recipe: Mix 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in 8 ounces of warm water. Fill a bulb syringe with this mixture (or use a Neti pot, available at most health foods stores). Lean your head over a basin, and using the bulb syringe, gently squirt the salt water into your nose. Hold one nostril closed by applying light finger pressure while squirting the salt mixture into the other nostril. Let it drain. Repeat two to three times, and then treat the other nostril. Hopefully this will help with a fast recovery, and you can get back to your daily beauty regime and looking fabulous

POPULAR: Mohammed is now the number one baby name in the UK, surpassing 2013’s most favoured choice, Oliver
New name tops 2014 list of baby names With the diversity of Britain’s residents continuing to expand year-on-year, statistics released earlier this week have highlighted the Arabic name of ‘Mohammed’ as the most popular amongst newborn Brits. Knocking 2013’s most popular choice, Oliver, off top spot, Mohammed leaped 27 positions into the most favoured position, above more traditional names such as Jack, in third place respectively. Data carried out by BabyCentre, a parenting website, revealed the latest trends for parents with Sophia rising to first place for girls. Sarah Redshaw, managing editor for BabyCentre, explained why
MOHAMMED Mohammed was likely to have risen so highly in the standings. “Traditionally Mohammed is often given to the first-born boy in Muslim families,” Ms Redshaw explained. “The increase of other Arabic names in the top 100 shows the ever-increasing diversity of the UK today.” As well as the traditional choices in different communities, celebrities are also believed to
influence the choice of names for newborns, with adverse effects also highlighted. In Britain, David and Victoria Beckham’s children have seen their names rise in this year’s standings with Harper entering the top 100 for the first time, whilst Romeo and Cruz have also risen, up 67 per cent and 400 per cent. Television stars, both animated and not, are also causing trends to occur with Elsa, the star of hit
Disney-film ‘Frozen’, entering the charts, as well as names from popular dramas, such as Breaking Bad and Orange is the New Black. But Ms Redshaw did warn that ‘bad behaviour’ from certain celebs has seen their names become less popular over the past 12 months. “Parents are wary of names associated with celebrities who exhibit bad behaviour, the controversial pop singer Miley Cyrus being a prime example,” she said. The name Miley has fallen, as have Amy and Nick, following the release of the mystery thriller book and movie Gone Girl.

Festival of Light
Thousands packed into Huddersfield’s St George’s Square from 2pm on Saturday 29th November for the annual Festival of Light. A special sing-along-Frozen event started the afternoon off with young and old singing along to the Disney film. As darkness fell, the Hade Edge Band took to the stage with a concert of popular music, and James Bawn illuminated the square in amazing colours and effects before accompanying the now traditional festival fireworks display. As younger children and families began to leave having enjoyed an afternoon of music and street theatre, an older audience of some 14,000 filled St George’s Square to hear Huddersfield band, STEMS, perform their score to A Trip to the Moon, part of a World Premiere weekend of performances “BFI Sci-Fi: Days of fear and Wonder”.
Volunteer with the youth
Residents in Calderdale are being asked to spare some time to help transform young people’s lives this winter. Calderdale Council is looking for volunteers to support its work with children and young people in a range of services aimed at giving them the best possible start in life. Whether it’s helping out at a youth club, befriending a child in care, helping to run play activities or mentoring a young offender, there are lots of ways to get involved and help young people to socialise, learn and develop. Home-Start Calderdale – a charity that the Council commissions to support families with children under the age of five – is also inviting people to volunteer.

Mandela LEGACY: Members of Leeds’ community gathered at Mandela Gardens on Friday evening to remember Nelson Mandela, one year on from his passing. Pictured here at the opening of Leeds’ Millenium Square in 2001
Crowds gather in honour of great humanitarian Civic leaders, community groups and young people gathered in Leeds on Friday to mark the one year anniversary of the death of Nelson Mandela. The event, at Mandela Gardens on Millennium Square, included a poetry reading by Leeds Young Authors before floral tributes were laid in remembrance of the South African. A speciallycommissioned film documenting Mandela’s legacy in Leeds was shown to the crowds on the big screen on Millennium Square, where members of the public had been invited to attend. The celebration of Mandela’s life then continued with a community event at the
Mandela Centre on Chapeltown Road. Councillor Keith Wakefield, leader of Leeds City Council, who paid tribute to Mandela with a speech at Friday’s event, said: “After Nelson Mandela’s tragic death, the outpouring of grief from the people of Leeds showed just how much this exceptional man meant to the city. “People of all generations were keen to pay tribute and be part of the incredible legacy he has left behind. “It’s only fitting that we mark the anniversary of his death and also celebrate the special connection our city shares with someone who has become a symbol of freedom and justice across the world.”
Nobel Peace Prize winner Mandela, who officially opened Millennium Square when he visited Leeds in 2001, died at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg on 5th December, 2013 at the age of 95. During his visit to Leeds, the former South Africa president and antiapartheid campaigner received the Freedom of the City of Leeds, and following his death, a commemorative service was held at Leeds Minster. More recently earlier this year, local young people welcomed three representatives of the South African High Commission to Leeds Civic Hall to mark 20 years since the end of apartheid.

Reframing Disaster Exhibition examines devastating tragedies
AFFECTED: This image, taken by Raghu Rai entitled ‘Widows’ Colony’ shows some of the victims of the 1984 Bhopal disaster
www.asianexpress.co.uk This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Bhopal gas disaster in India, the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide and the 10th anniversary of the South Asian tsunami on Boxing Day 2004. ‘Reframing Disaster’ is a major project based in Leeds that seeks to consider, commemorate and support recovery for these and other global disasters throughout the start of December. It is part of the University of Leeds’ postcolonial disaster project headed by Dr Anthony Carrigan, Lecturer in Postcolonial
Literatures and Cultures at the University’s School of English. He said: “At a time when the number of global disasters is rising rapidly, it’s vital we consider both the historical legacies of large-scale catastrophes and why disasters continue to hit communities across the world so hard. “Reframing Disaster looks beyond statistics towards the profound physical, emotional, and physical fallout from disasters as communicated across art, literature and the media. “What can they tell us about how long a disaster lasts? How do communities recover from environmental devastation? And what might be done to support survivors, to campaign for justice and prevent future disasters?” A free photographic exhibition opened earlier this week at The Tetley and runs until 7th December. Featuring work by the world-renowned Magnum photographer, Raghu Rai, who was the first to document the Bhopal disaster, a number of unique images are available for public viewing. On the night of 2nd December 1984, a Union Carbide pesticide plant leaked 27 tons of toxic gases in the central Indian city, causing one of the world’s worst industrial disasters. To date 25,000 have died as a result of exposure to the toxic cloud, and over half a million have suffered from debilitating health problems. The project also includes film screenings, public discussions, schools workshops and a conference.

Television may be one of the hardest industries to break into yet a 12-year-old from Bradford has certainly made it look easy after being cast in a major BBC drama after just one week of acting classes. Ubayd Rehman, from Eccleshill, is starring alongside the likes of world renowned actor and comedian Michael Palin, in the now-airing ‘Remember Me’ three-part series which has gathered many plaudits after its first show aired last Sunday evening. The Dixon’s Trinity Academy pupil took on the role of Akil Salim, a ‘cheeky neighbour’ of Tom Parfitt, played by Mr Palin, who finds himself mixed up in Tom’s mysterious life. A member of Baildon’s Articulate Speech, Acting and Casting group, Ubayd explained what it was like to have landed the role and a little bit more about his character. “At the first audition I was nervous because I had never done anything like it before,” he explained. “But once I got a call back for a

second audition, I felt a lot more confident. I also got the chance to meet Aqib (Khan) and run some lines with him which helped me a lot. “When I got told I had got the part I was just really happy.” He added about his character: “Akil is Tom’s nosey, cheeky neighbour who just likes to get involved in things he maybe shouldn’t. “His brother is a really bad influence on him as well which is very clear in the series.” The role of Ubayd’s brother in the drama is also played by a fellow Bradford actor with Aqib Khan, of East is East fame, taking on the role. Full Monty star, Mark Addy, and Absoltuely Fabulous actress, Julia Sawalha, are also cast in the series, with Mr Palin. Despite working alongside the Monty Python star, Ubayd admitted he had not seen anything the world-renowned actor had starred in before he met him on set. “I had never seen anything really but since meeting him and talking about some of his experiences, I have,” he said. “I watched ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ and to see him visit so many places and speak to so many people was just amazing, especially because I was now talking to him as well. “From the first day he was really nice but so was everyone else on set which made it very easy to settle in.” Ubayd’s mother, Makdas Rehman, said the whole family was ‘really proud’ to see her son on television even if it did come as a surprise initially. “It all happened really fast,” she said. “Ubayd only started his drama school around November time last year and was asked if he would like to try out for this BBC drama by his teacher. “From then he had his auditions and filming began almost straight away. “We are all just really proud of him and it is nice to see how much his confidence has developed as well.” Articulate Speech, Acting and Casting currently has pupils cast in the new Dad’s Army film, Hunter’s Prayer - a film set to be released in 2015 featuring

Performance aims to warn young people about online safety
A flashmob overtook the streets of Leeds on Saturday as a group of youths attempted to raise awareness of online safety for children and young people across the city. The student arm of the Leeds Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) - which is made up of childcare and education students at Leeds City College, arranged for a dramatic production to demonstrate the dangers of sharing too much information online. The ‘flash mob’ style performance took place on Lands Lane in Leeds city centre. Performing Arts students from the college have worked with the Student LSCB to produce the powerful performance depicting online grooming – and asked the audience to question if they ever knew who they were really talking to online. The performance was arranged as part of the ‘Who are you really talking to?’ campaign which was launched earlier this year in partnership with West Yorkshire Police, local children’s safeguarding boards and local authorities. A member of the student safeguarding children board said: “We’re really proud of the campaign and hope that the flash mob raises awareness of the dangers of online grooming.” Jane Held, chair of the Leeds Safeguarding Children Board added: “The student LSCB members are doing a fantastic job raising awareness about how to stay safe online amongst children and young people. “Their idea for a flash-mob performance on a busy Saturday in Leeds city centre will help spread this important message to many people who we would not normally be able to reach.” Detective Chief Inspector Sue Jenkinson, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “This is a great initiative with these young people coming up with their own, innovative way of getting across the message that people you speak to online may not be who they say they are. “We need everyone to play their part by knowing the signs of child sexual exploitation and reporting anything of concern to us so that we can take positive action.” The online multi-agency campaign is being run across West Yorkshire to make young people more aware of the risks behind chat forums and other interactive platforms. It forms part of the ongoing initiative entitled ‘Know the Signs’ which aims to highlight the issues of child sexual exploitation and encourage victims to report it.

Scrumptious gifts to be delivered at Christmas

Selecting children first
A pair of generous fundraisers are aiming to bring a smile to the faces of children in local hospitals by giving them a sweet treat this Christmas. Sarah Royal, from Idle, Bradford, and Qais Ashfaq, from Leeds, are currently collecting selection boxes for the children’s ward at Bradford Royal Infirmary. Following a similar campaign held at the end of 2013 by Sarah and her friends, the 25-year-old decided to take on the challenge once again this year in the hope of spreading the gift-giving spirit. Asking for donations of a selection box, or cash to purchase the products, before the 19th December ‘delivery day’, the collection continues to gain momentum in the build up to the holidays. And this year, Sarah is joined in the appeal by her friend, and Commonwealth Silver medallist, Qais Ashfaq. “I saw Sarah was doing the campaign again this year and I was really interested in helping in whatever way I could,” Qais said about the project. “In our first week, we had around £150 donated to the appeal which will all be put towards selection boxes for children in the Bradford Royal Infirmary.” Qais added that the
initial response has been much better than he could have anticipated but urged people to continue giving. “When I put it on my Twitter feed that Sarah and I were doing this, we got a great response with people immediately saying they wanted to donate and get involved,” he added. “Our initial target was just to bring the gifts to one
hospital but hopefully if the donations keep coming in we could even provide the selection boxes to more hospitals. “Last year, Sarah and her friends also donated whatever extra funds they had left after buying the boxes to charity so every penny is put towards a good cause.” If you would like to donate a selection box, or just a couple of pounds for the purchase of one, please contact either Sarah Royal on sarahroyal_8@hotmail.com, or Qais Ashfaq via qais_ashfaq@hotmail.co.uk

LEARNING: Ten pupils took part in the Takeover Day as they learnt how to write a news story
Asian Express empowers kids A group of enthusiastic children from a Leeds primary school turned into junior reporters last week as they learned all about the newspaper industry, with a little help from the Asian Express. As part of the national Children Takeover Day, Managing Editor of the Asian Express, Andleeb Hanif, met with pupils from Iveson Primary School where some serious brainstorming took place on how to write a good news story. During the session, the children identified the differences between ‘gossip’ and ‘news’ and were keen to eagerly share their ideas on proposed headlines and how to approach an article for a newspaper. Throughout the class, children had enjoyed talking about different types of news and were eager to talk about sports and celebrities, as well investigative journalism. Mrs Hanif said she thoroughly enjoyed the day and working with the children. “I was really impressed with this group of youngsters, who were so switched on about the importance of information being informative and accurate,” she said. “They also knew the distinct differences between ‘gossip’ and ‘news’ stories, and were keen to give examples. “We need to remember that they are only 10-years-old, so for them to be so engaged in newspaper articles was highly admirable. Well done to all of them for being so switched on.” She added: “The Children’s Commissioner’s Takeover Day is a fabulous initiative where young

‘On-the-run’ rapist found in Italy
A convicted rapist, who went on the run during his trial at Bradford Crown Court, has been arrested in Italy following investigations from authorities across Europe. 21-year-old Wakar Akhtar, of Hudson Avenue, Bradford, was found guilty of raping a woman in a Bradford park, along with three co-defendants. They were private hire driver Tamseel Virk, 42, of Marten Road, Canterbury, Bradford; Akhtar’s uncle, Azad Raja, 38, of Hudson Avenue, Canterbury; and Najeem Ul-Saeed, 31, of Beaumont Road, Girlington. Each man was sentenced to 17 years in prison last week whilst Akhtar was also handed an identical sentence in his absence from court. He was eventually arrested in Brescia on Saturday morning by Italian authorities. Extradition proceedings have now begun and Detective Chief Inspector Steve Snow, of Protective Services (Homicide and Major Enquiry Team), praised the efforts of all those involved in Akhtar’s capture. DCI Snow said: “I would like to praise the efforts of the National Crime Agency, Interpol and the Italian authorities, who carried out significant work with

The victim lost consciousness after drinking with friends in Leeds and awoke to find her arm being forced behind her back as she was raped on a public bench in Bradford.

Residents are being warned that burglars know the price of everything and the value of nothing, and will be on the lookout for rich pickings this Christmas time. Ecoloft Turning empty spaces into private prayer rooms A
Our survey said... I
n a previous article we looked at the case of Interflora Inc & Another –vMarks and Spencer plc and Another, in which M&S paid Google AdWords for advertisements for its flower delivery service displayed on the search engine results page when internet users searched for “interflora” (known as keyword advertising). The High Court, using criteria set down by the European Court of Justice, found that M&S had infringed Interflora’s trade marks by using them as keywords. This was because the adverts did not enable the reasonably well informed and reasonably observant internet users to work out (or only with difficulty) if the service referred to in the adverts originated from the trade mark owner; a business connected to it; or a third party. A crucial aspect of the claim considered by the Court of Appeal was the use of survey evidence in trademark infringement cases. In this particular case, the Court would not allow the survey evidence obtained to be used on the basis that Interflora had not demonstrated that the evidence it wished to call would be of real value. The Judge took the view that Interflora had started with an unreliable dataset from which it proposed to select the witnesses most favourable to itself. Interflora had enlisted the help of a market research company in conducting a survey in the street which involved the survey respondents looking at Google search results on a computer. The ‘mock’ results brought up Interflora, both as a natural or organic result and as a sponsored link, and also an M&S sponsored link, together with other sponsored links.
The Court held that evidence should not be adduced from witnesses selected as a result of a survey, unless the survey itself could be shown to be statistically reliable. The Court laid down guidelines as to the admissibility of survey evidence that; A party could conduct a true pilot survey without permission, but at his own risk as to costs (and unless the survey subsequently proves to have generated the correct sort of witnesses, the costs are unlikely to be recoverable) No further survey could be conducted or adduced in evidence without the Court’s permission No party could adduce evidence from respondents to any survey without the Court’s permission The Court confirmed that in determining whether to give permission, the Judge should evaluate the results of the material and permission should only be given if the Court was satisfied that the evidence was likely to be of real value. The Court must also be satisfied that the value justified the costs involved. The encouragement of speculation by witnesses in areas they would not otherwise have ‘embarked’ on was also disapproved of by the Court of Appeal. Here, the use of questions which insinuated that there was a connection between M&S and Interflora (which was the very question at issue) would produce tainted evidence and so should not be allowed. We at Blacks deal with all aspects of Intellectual Property law, to include claims for Passing Off and Trademark Infringement.

Qatar bid for Canary Wharf One of London’s most affluent areas will remain in the hands of current owners, for the time-being at least, after a huge bid was rebuffed from a Qatar and North American investor. Qatar Investment Authority and Brookfield Property Partners LP had offered a raised amount of £2.6bn for Britain’s Canary Wharf, equating out to 350pence per share. However, current owners, Songbird Estates have said the offer ‘does not reflect the full value of the
SpiceJet cuts fleet India’s SpiceJet Ltd, the country’s second largest airline by domestic passenger share which cut around a third of its fleet back in September, will fly just 22-24 Boeing planes until mid-2015, according to its chief operating officer. Sanjiv Kapoor, said the loss-making budget carrier hopes to cut costs through the new strategy and needs fresh capital if
it is to end a fiveconsecutive quarterly loss. Prior to the September cut, it had been operating 35 planes and Mr Kapoor told Reuters ‘the decision to shrink is part of [their] restructuring’. The airline flew 42 Boeing planes at the end of last year, and it has cut its daily flights to 275 from 340, he added. Kapoor also said that the Airports Authority of
India had reinstated its credit facility after the airline resolved all outstanding issues with the regulatory body. The airports regulator told SpiceJet this week that it must pay in cash for services like landing, parking and luggage handling every time it flies a plane, which typically happens when an airline owes it money beyond a certain threshold.
company, its unique position and future growth potential’. The Canary Wharf financial zone was established about 25 years ago on former docks and is in a Songbird portfolio that includes part ownership of the landmark ‘Walkie Talkie’ skyscraper in the City, London's traditional business area. A recent revival in London’s office property market, alongside Canary Wharf’s expansion plans, has helped stir interest in Songbird.
Canary Wharf is preparing to start work on two major developments: a 60-storey tower with the first residential property on the estate and a 20-acre waterside site with 3,100 homes and office buildings, as well as a school and more shops. However, Canary Wharf's complex ownership structure with two layers of shareholders, one in Songbird and another in Canary Wharf Group, has tended to leave Songbird shares trading at a discount to their net asset value.

Rochdale grooming scandal Concerns rising as town PREJUDICE: Event co-organiser, Mohammed Waseem says that now it feels like that any Muslim working as a taxi driver during the night in Rochdale, is being suspected as being a sexual groomer
faces unprecedented Islamophobia By Majed Iqbal info@asianexpress.co.uk
Muslims in Rochdale, for the first time, have collectively spoken out against the rise of Islamophobia and discrimination against them, post the grooming scandal involving Asian men sexually exploiting young girls. In 2012, nine men of Pakistani descent were convicted and sent to prison for grooming underage white girls for sex. Most of the men convicted for these heinous crimes were taxi drivers. Ever since this came to the limelight, taxi drivers have felt the brunt of the backlash, suffering verbal abuse, intimidation, physical man-handling and severe beatings from people who now view all Pakistani taxi drivers in a similar light.
FRUSTRATION: Kassim Javed says that casual xenophobia towards Muslims has now, unfortunately, become an acceptable norm
Challenging the narrative on grooming A high-profile press conference organised by Rochdale’s local businessmen, taxi driver associations, community leaders, bloggers, rights activists and victims, aimed to challenge this narrative and to highlight the grievances of Rochdale’s Muslim Community on the issue. “Irresponsible comments from senior local and national politicians are aiding the negative portrayal of the Muslim community.
“Time and time again some politicians and the mainstream media have attempted to equate issues such as grooming and the Muslim community at large as one and the same. “This has meant that casual xenophobia towards Muslims has now become an acceptable norm,” said event organiser Kassim Javed.
‘Ethnicising’ the problem
The Rochdale case has now come to epitomise the wider phenomenon of localised grooming in the eyes of many people. Repeated references of sexual exploitation have made Rochdale synonymous with grooming with the primary culprits being loosely associated with the Muslim community. This is despite revelations of highprofile cases in the last year, including the towns former famous MP, Cyrill Smith, who was involved in sexually exploiting vulnerable children as well as national celebrity figures like Jimmy Saville and Max Clifford, who similarly engaged in vile acts of pedophilia. This selective approach has concerned many in the town. “When news broke of Jimmy Saville’s paedophilic crimes, the media didn’t say or suspect that anyone working for the BBC in the 1960s and 70’s who was white and of a certain age were grooming children. “But now by association, any Muslim who works as a taxi driver
or a takeaway in the night in Rochdale, is suspected of being a sexual groomer,” highlighted IT Professional and co-organiser, Mohammed Waseem.
Rise in physical violence
Suleman Ahmad from the ‘Rochdale Association for Private hire Taxi drivers’ said: “From racist attitudes to violence the situation is unprecedented. Islam is being portrayed negatively. “This has resulted in not only the community feeling vilified but potentially lead to breakdown in social cohesion in Society.” Qayyum Khan, one of the oldest taxi drivers in Rochdale said: “People are blaming us for grooming. I was even wrongly accused of grooming and was taken to the police station and shown pictures to identify girls. “I continuously said that I was innocent and didn’t know any of the girls. I was eventually cleared. It’s been over six months, but my taxi badge has still not been reinstated”. Shazad, a local taxi driver was worried about the repercussions taxi drivers are now facing. “On average one or two drivers will get a kicking (beating) once a month,” he said.

Continued from page 49 Deflecting debate “Media and politicians are deflecting debate from the serious and endemic social problems Britain is facing. Instead juxtaposing these issues to a minority. “We need to be proactive in arranging dialogue and discussion on these issues. These are not just Muslims issues,” says Mohammed Waseem.
Institutional failures
Details remain unclear to the
failures of social services and the police’s role in dealing with the scandal. Many of the victims informed the police about what was happening to them. No attention was paid and they were simply ignored. The House of Commons Home Affairs Committee report titled ‘Child sexual exploitation and the response to localised grooming’ was quick to highlight this. “We believe that there are still places in the UK where victims of child sexual exploitation are being failed by statutory agencies. The police, social services and the Crown Prosecution Service must all bear

responsibility for the way in which vulnerable children have been left unprotected by the system,” said the report.
Societal price
Event organisers believed that the problem is a wider societal issue that is simply being swept under the carpet. According to the Office of the Children’s Commissioner, Interim report, ‘I thought I was the only one. The only one in the world’, published in November 2012, it found: “At least 16,500 children were identified as being at risk of child sexual exploitation during one year and 2,409 children were confirmed as victims of sexual exploitation in gangs and groups although it warned that the scale of abuse was likely to be much larger”. About 60% of calls to ‘Child Line’ which relate to grooming relate to on-line grooming; 40% involve faceto-face interactions. According to the NSPCC nearly a quarter (24.1%) of young adults experienced sexual abuse (including contact and noncontact), by an adult or a peer during childhood.
THE TRUTH: MP Ann Coffey said that her observations will make painful reading for those who hoped that Rochdale was an isolated case
expectations has led to new social phenomenon, which blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. Many end up falling prey to sexual predators looking for opportunities to sexually exploit naïve and vulnerable children. A report released by Ann Coffey MP says child sexual exploitation (CSE) is a “real and on-going problem that has become a new social norm”. She said: “My Sexualised culture The accessibility of pornography observations will make painful and changes in sexual attitudes and reading for those who hoped that
Rochdale was an isolated case. This is a real and on going problem. “The increased sexualisation of youngsters through explicit music videos and sexting, selfies and Instagram may be fuelling child sex abuse,” Coffey suggested in the report. She said these had “changed expectations of sexual entitlement, and with it a confused understanding of what constitutes consent.” The cases of abuse seem to be continuing. Greater Manchester Police received 2,286 pieces of intelligence relating to child sexual exploitation in the nine months between March 2013 and January 2014. There are currently 260 on-going police investigations into child sexual exploitation in Greater Manchester, highlighting the severity and magnitude of the problem being faced.

Largest donor so far to Gandhi statue The installation of a nine-foot tall statue of Gandhi in London’s Parliament Square has just received its biggest single donation of a whopping £100,000. The handsome sum came from an admirable social and political activist Dr Rami Ranger, who is also the company director of Sun Mark Ltd. The Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust say the donation is a huge way towards meeting the £750,000 budget needed to make and erect the statue. The plan for the statue, which will be positioned directly in front of the Houses of Parliament was proposed by the Chancellor George Osborne and former Foreign Secretary William Hague, during a visit to India in July this year. It is hoped to be in place by early 2015.
The sculpture by Philip Jackson, who has also created memorials to Bomber Command, the Gurkhas and the Korean War, depicts Gandhi wearing a shawl and traditional dhoti skirt, with his hands clasped. Inspired by photographs of Gandhi on the steps of 10 Downing Street during a visit to London in 1931, the statue portrays him as “a thoughtful, determined, compassionate man”, according to planning documents. Dr Ranger said: “The world owes Gandhi a huge debt of gratitude for liberating one fifth of mankind through non-violence, thereby creating a better world.” Other donors are also stepping forward from around the world to contribute towards setting up the Gandhi statue. There are pledges of
large amounts due to be realised in the next month, while smaller donations continue to flow. Professor Lord (Meghnad) Desai, chair of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, said: “This is more good news which adds to the steady flow of donations which have been coming in from all around the world through our website as awareness spreads. “It is the combination of lots of small donations and a few large ones which is taking us swiftly to our final goal. But of course, we still welcome all those who would like to donate. As Gandhi said, ‘If the cause is right, the means will come’.” Gandhi’s statue will stand along side other great figures such as Sir Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and Abraham Lincoln.

6th Form Islamic society at London school causes concern An east London Church of England school, which serves a large Muslim community and was previously graded outstanding is expected to be put into special measures over concerns about its sixth-form Islamic society. The school in Stepney - Sir John Cass Foundation and Redcoat school, in Stepney, east London, is believed to have failed an Ofsted inspection due to its sixth Form Islamic society’s Facebook page which had links to a radical preacher. It is also claimed that the sixth form society set up a YouTube channel which was not adequately monitored. Now the education watchdog will publish reports on seven schools after carrying out a series of unannounced inspections in Tower Hamlets, and is expected to include a number of independent Islamic schools. The no-notice inspections were carried out at the request of the Department for Education and are not part of the standard inspection regime. It follows the Trojan Horse investigations into allegations that schools in Birmingham were being targeted by groups promoting a hard-line Muslim agenda.
Allowing the segregation of boys and girls in play areas has also been highlighted - but this has been in place for several years. Previously the Ofsted report commended how students from "diverse cultures
work so well together, having developed excellent codes of behaviour and respect for one another in and out of lessons". "This is reflected in the very low level of racial incidents and
exclusions for a school of this size," said inspectors. Ofsted says more than 90% of pupils at the school are from ethnic minority groups, with the majority from Bangladeshi backgrounds.
Tower Hamlets council said it could not comment until the reports for all the schools are published. But director of education Robert McCulloch-Graham said: "We note that of the schools inspected, only one is a publicly-funded maintained school. "As is common practice, we will work with the leadership of this school to address any issues identified by Ofsted. "As a local education authority, we have no jurisdiction whatsoever over teaching and standards at independent faith schools. This is Ofsted's area of responsibility. "We do, however, have responsibility for safeguarding all children in the borough and have always exercised our safeguarding duties to the full. "We are working closely with Ofsted and the Department for Education after their recent inspections and we will of course act on the findings of the reports. We will continue to work with Ofsted and the DfE to address any issues, potential or otherwise. "The council and its partners have worked extremely hard to build the cohesive community that is Tower Hamlets and will do whatever is necessary to ensure that this continues."

Employment rate for people from black and minority ethnic background highest on record Employment for people from black and ethnic minority backgrounds has reached a record high with unemployment falling across all ethnic groups, according to new official statistics. The figures published by the Office for National Statistics show that there are 166,000 more people from BME backgrounds in work compared to this time last year, bringing the total number to a record high of more than 3 million. The employment rate has also hit a new record high of 62.5%, a 2.3 percentage point rise over the last year. Thanks to a range of government schemes designed to help people into jobs, more than 50,000 opportunities have already been taken up by people from BME backgrounds. These include schemes that offer work experience, employer-led placements, or help starting up a new business – however Ministers and advisers recognise
that a gap still remains compared with the rest of the population, which is why Jobcentres will continue to deliver tailored support specific to local communities. Unemployment has fallen across all ethnic groups, including people from a Black, African and Caribbean background as well as those from a Chinese, Pakistani and Mixed backgrounds. The Prime Minister said: “I warmly welcome these latest figures showing record employment rates for people of black and minority ethnic heritage. And along with reductions in the number of young people not in training, education or employment, this shows our long-term economic plan is delivering for people of all backgrounds and ages. “Over 160,000 more black and minority ethnic people are in work today compared to this time last year, with more than 50,000 opportunities being taken up on
government-backed employment and training schemes designed to help people into jobs. “Alongside this our enterprise scheme has helped budding entrepreneurs from black and minority ethnic backgrounds set up over 6,000 new businesses this is not just great news for those individuals and their families, but it’s great for businesses and the economy too. “That is why this government is committed to go further still and make sure barriers are lifted and opportunities are opened to people of all backgrounds. This is how we will truly ensure we have a brighter and more secure economic future.” Minister for Employment Esther McVey said: “We’ve seen record numbers of people share in the improving jobs market as the economy continues to grow – and this includes people from all backgrounds and all regions across the country. “More and more people are
having their lives transformed by moving into work and having the security of a regular wage. From government schemes that give people the skills and experience they need, through to help setting up in business, we’re working hard to ensure that everyone is a step closer to the job that could change their life. “We know there is more to do to ensure people from black and ethnic minority backgrounds have the same opportunities as everyone else, which is why we will continue to follow our longterm economic plan to help businesses to create the jobs that people need. “We also know how important role models are – especially for young jobseekers or budding entrepreneurs, and we’d encourage more successful business leaders to step forward and work with us to pass on their knowledge and experience to the next generation.”
The figures show that
The employment rate for people from a Black, African and Caribbean background has risen by more than 3 percentage points on the year – it now stands at 63.4%, the highest employment rate seen for this group since 2010.
People from a Chinese background have seen an increase in employment rate of nearly 6 percentage points on the year.
The employment rate for people from a Bangladeshi background now stands at a record high of 57.1%
The unemployment rate for people from a Bangladeshi background has fallen by a 7 percentage points over the year. Sector-based work academies offer people a package of preemployment training, work experience placements and a guaranteed job interview in specific industries, such as hospitality. Almost 21,000 placements on work academies have been picked up so far by people from BME backgrounds.

‘My life is in danger’ An American hostage, who was snatched from the streets of Yemen more than a year ago by the nation’s Al-Qaida branch, has said he fears for his life, after a hostage video was released earlier this week. 33-year-old photojournalist, Luke Somers, was captured whilst working in Sanaa, an area of the impoverished Arab nation where he had been living for the past three years. A rescue mission was launched yet failed last month by American Special Forces and now the extremist group have given Washington three days to meet unspecified demands or Somers faces his ‘inevitable fate’. In the video, that seems to mimic that of al-Qaida’s rival, the Islamic State, Somers appears healthy yet says ‘my life is in danger’ before adding: “It’s now been well over a year since I’ve been kidnapped in Sanaa. “Basically, I'm looking for any help that can get me out of this situation...I'm certain that my life is in danger. So as I sit here now, I ask, if anything can be done, please let it be done. Thank you very much.” Also speaking in the video, released through the al-Qaida offshoot’s Twitter feed, was local commander of the group, Nasser bin Ali al-Ansi, who condemned the aforementioned rescue attempt. Calling the move ‘foolish’ and warning against further ‘stupidities’, al-Ansi said US officials had three days to meet unspecified demands or ‘the American hostage held by us will meet his inevitable fate’. Despite not elaborating further as to what the group’s demands
American hostage told he could face ‘inevitable fate’ after failed rescue mission were, al-Ansi added that Washington was ‘aware’ of them. In a statement released on Thursday, Pentagon press secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby, confirmed for the first time that US troops had been unsuccessful in a rescue mission for Somers last month. Upon arriving at the site, the rescue operation found no sign of Somers. White House spokeswoman, Bernadette Meehan, added that President Barack Obama had authorized a rescue operation to free Somers and other hostages but ‘regrettably, Luke was not present’.
Most recently, a video post has now been released by Somers’ family which shows his mother and brother pleading with their relative’s captures to release him. “[Luke was] only trying to do good things for the Yemeni population,” Jordan Somers says in the footage posted to YouTube. “Luke is only a photojournalist and is not responsible for any actions the US government has taken.” Paula Somers, Luke’s mother, said that her son looked healthy and thanked the captures for that, adding ‘please show mercy and give us an opportunity to see our Luke again’.

Children HIV positive after blood transfusions Lack of enforced regulation putting children at risk A leading medic in Pakistan is warning that the news of 10 children from the South Asian nation, who tested positive for HIV this week after receiving blood transfusions, could be ‘just the tip of the iceberg’ with many more likely to have contracted the disease. After the news was revealed on Thursday, Pakistan’s already and notoriously fragile underfunded health system was once again brought into the spotlight for further questioning. The children were receiving regular transfusions for the blood disease thalassaemia, according to secretary general of the Thalassaemia Federation of Pakistan, Yasmin Rashid. The consortium of charities currently offers transfusions to 22,000 children and it is believed that more than just 10 of these are likely to now be HIV positive. In Pakistan, laws exist which require blood to be screened for diseases, but due to poor
enforcements, it is possible for infected batches to be approved, according to Javed Akram, vice chancellor of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. “Most of the professional blood donors are drug abusers,” he said. “I think these cases are probably the tip of the iceberg. It is a scandal.” Many children would require transfusions on a biweekly basis, he said, increasing their exposure to infected blood. He added that he was aware of 16 children receiving transfusions who had tested positive for HIV so far. Rashid said her organisation was told that at least 10 children had tested positive for HIV last week yet did not know how many children had been tested so far. “These children are desperate for blood, they go to multiple centres,” said Rashid. Most blood banks in Pakistan are privately operated and the quality, age and price of blood varies widely.
SAFETY: Blood donated in Pakistan should follow strict laws yet due to poor enforcement it is feared that contaminated batches are often passed as safe

Deadline extended...again ‘Substantial progress’ made yet 12-year dispute continues
CONTROVERSY: Iran has reduced its stockpile of low-enriched uranium gas since last year’s meeting
PROGRESS: British Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, said that despite an extension to the deadline being granted, progress was being made
This is the current situation Iran and six other world powers currently face after yet again failing to come to an agreed conclusion regarding the 12-year dispute over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. It was hoped that an agreement would be reached on Monday 24th November yet after a meeting with representatives from some of the world’s top powers, a historic deal was not conceived. Instead, a further seven months have been given to overcome the deadlock in the hope of securing an agreement on the substance of a final accord by the end of June 2015. “We have had to conclude it
is not possible to get to an agreement by the deadline that was set for today and therefore we will extend the JPOA to June 30, 2015,” British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond told reporters at the end of the talks. Hammond was referring to the titled ‘Joint Plan of Action’ which was agreed to between the six nations and Iran a year ago in Geneva under which Tehran halted higher level enrichment in uranium exchange for a limited easing of sanctions, including access to some frozen oil revenues abroad. Hammond said the expectation was that Iran would continue to refrain from sensitive atomic activity. He added that Iran and the powers ‘made some significant
progress’ in the latest round of talks, which began last Tuesday in the Austrian capital. Hammond said that there was a clear target to reach a agreement’ of ‘headline substance within the next three months and talks would resume next month. Iranian official An confirmed the extension, as did Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who echoed Hammond's comments about "substantial progress". A report by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the U.N. nuclear watchdog, showed that Iran had reduced its stockpile of low-enriched uranium gas and taken other action to comply with last year's interim agreement with world powers. Iranian President Hassan
Rouhani was due to address Iranian people on the television on Monday evening whilst US Secretary of State, John Kerry, was planning to speak to the press in Vienna before returning to the United States. One pessimistic senior Western diplomat spoke to Reuters under the condition of anonymity and said he did not think the talks were likely to move far in the next seven months. “It's been 10 years that proposals and ideas have been put forward,” he said. “There's nothing left. It's essentially a side issue now. The Iranians are not moving. It is a political choice. “I am sceptical that even if we did extend we will be able to reach a deal.”

The next-generation A350 XWB – which will set new standards for comfort and efficiency when it enters commercial service
Revolutionary
The £1.9 billion luxury Airbus with Rolls Royce engines and widest seats A revolutionary luxury airiner, created to compete with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner jet, will be handed over to Qatar Airways in mid-December. Boasting the widest cabin in its category, the longrange Airbus A350 XWB airliner is powered by two very quiet Rolls Royce Trent engines. It sets new standards in terms of passenger experience, operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. It's also the first of its kind to have both fuselage and wing structures made up of 53 per cent carbonfibre-reinforced polymer, which helps its fuel efficiency. The revolutionary widebody planes will be able to carry 250 to 350 passengers in a three-class seating layout and is has an impressive space of 220 inches from armrest to armrest - which means even the passengers travelling in economy class get an 18inche-wide seat. It has been created to provide direct competition to Boeing's 787 Dreamliner and brings another dimension to the air travel experience by providing “Xtra” comfort to its passengers. The jetliner takes inflight entertainment to a new dimension with the incorporation of fourthgeneration in-flight entertainment systems. Benefitting from highbandwidth fibre optics, high-definition video
becomes a reality for all passengers on the A350 XWB, with individual seat monitors upgraded to new standards – beginning with screens of up to 12-inch in economy class. The advantages of fourthgeneration in-flight entertainment go well beyond the viewing and listening experience, as these systems do away with bulky under-seat control
Airbus aims to deliver the first A350 jetliner to its first customer Qatar Airways by mid-December, the airline said on Tuesday. Gulf News quoted its chief executive Akbar Al Baker as saying the midsized jet would be delivered between December 12 and 15 . The long-range, twin-aisle plane received was given certification by the U.S.
BUSINESS CLASS: The A350 XWB cabin design – with its smooth curves, flowing lines, innovative lighting and wide windows – helps create a pleasant and soothing atmosphere for business class travellers
boxes that often block passenger legroom, while combined data and power cables are accommodated under a now-flat cabin floor. Wide panoramic windows create large angles of vision and a “window to the world” aloft as passengers of all sizes are provided with an exceptional view, while the mood inside is managed by a full-LED lighting system that creates more than 16 million colour options and is controllable both lengthwise and sideto-side inside the cabin.
Federal Aviation Administration last week, after winning European safety approval in September. Airbus has booked 750 orders for the A350, including 549 for the A350900 and 169 for the larger A350-1000, which is due to enter service in 2017. The company hopes to build three A350s per month by year-end, up from two a month currently. By the end of next year it plans to build five a month and to hit 10 a month by mid-2018.

Clashes as controversial Indian guru remanded in custody Supporters of controversial Indian guru Sant Rampal displaying his photographs, chant slogans praising him as they gather to show support at a protest venue
Controversial religious leader Sant Rampal stands by the door of a police van as he is brought to a court, surrounded by police personnel in Chandigarh, India, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014.Rampal was arrested late Wednesday night and produced in court on Thursday. A self-styled controversial Indian guru who many people believe can cure illnesses, was arrested after a week-long stand-off at his ashram in Haryana state. He has been remanded in custody until 28th November. Sant Rampal, a former engineer, is wanted in connection with a 2006 murder case in which a man died in a clash at his ashrams. He’s also wanted for contempt of court. His arrest follows a day of his supporters fighting a pitched battle with the police at his ashram. At least six people died during the stand-off, police said. The bodies of four women and a child were found at the site on Wednesday 19th November. A fifth woman, aged 20, died at a local hospital after leaving the ashram. The causes of their deaths are being investigated. Police say the bodies did not "bear any injuries". The 63-year-old guru, who is facing charges of waging war against the nation, told reporters on Thursday that he "regretted" the deaths, but denied police allegations that he had used his followers as human shields during clashes. "I did not use them (as shields). They were acting on their own," he said. The guru also denied all the
charges against him saying "I am innocent, all the charges against me are baseless". After being led out of his fortress-like complex in an ambulance late on Wednesday, the guru was taken for a medical examination. Before arresting Rampal, the police managed to evacuate more than 16,000 followers from the ashram and sent them home in buses and trains. Police accused his armed devotees of holding people hostage, and using women and children as human shields. More than 200 people were injured in the clashes - police fired tear gas and water cannon, and used bulldozers to try to break into the sprawling complex, while ashram members threw stones and other missiles and opened fire. At least 270 people have been arrested in connection with the violence and charged with rioting, illegal detention, attempt to murder and waging war against the state. The authorities ordered his arrest on contempt charges after he repeatedly failed to appear in court. The Punjab and Haryana High Court had set a final deadline for Rampal to appear in court on Monday in the contempt case. Rampal ignored the summons and his lawyers said he was too ill to make the 250km (155-mile) journey to the court in Chandigarh, which serves as the capital of both states. The judges criticised the government, saying they "lacked the will" to arrest the guru and said he must be in court by Friday.

THE LATEST ENTERTAINMENT AND CELEBRITY NEWS FROM BOLLYWOOD & HOLLYWOOD
The trial of the hit and run case which is going on has taken a new twist. Salman Khan’s blood alcohol levels were found to be much more than the permissible limit. Translation: he was drunk when he drove onto those people. The permissible limits were only 30 mg whereas Salman’s blood sample was found to have a whole 63 mg of alcohol. Abha Singh, the lawyer who was handling the case told the media: “Salman’s blood sample reports were presented in the court and as per his reports, his alcohol level in 100 ml blood was found to be 62 mg. Any amount of alcohol found in blood is enough for an offence if you are found driving.” The big question now is… what now? Salman Khan’s lawyer is having a cross examination done by another doctor of the J J Hospital and a decision will be taken by the court only after these reports come out. There is yet another investigation that is going on, to check if the vehicle was in good condition when the incident happened. They plan to end all the investigations and wrap up the case by the end of December, which is when his fate will be decided. This comes just days after Katrina Kaif voiced that she was highly miffed with Salman - her
ex-boyfriend when he publicly referred to her as Katrina Kapoor and not Katrina Kaif at Arpita’s wedding. Salman Khan who was in full swing at his sister's wedding, when he got up on the stage and danced to his superhit songs, he then called up Katrina Kaif on the stage but shy Katrina hid herself behind Karan Johar. Salman called up her name repeatedly but Kat was too shy to get on the dance floor and did not show her face. Salman who is known for his witty remarks teased Katrina and called her Katrina Kaif ... 'Kapoor' and said “Mai kya karoon… itna bada chance miss kiya Khan hone ka”. Salman then requested Karan to bring Katrina on the dance floor, saying, “Karan please come here, and bring Katrina on stage. Reluctant Katrina along with Karan joined Salman and Aamir on the stage. Katrina did not take Salman’s joke sportingly and she is seemingly unhappy with Sallu calling her Katrina Kapoor publicly. Salman’s little sister Arpita tried to cheer up Kat but the actress was in no mood to calm down. The video of Salman Khan calling Katrina as Katrina Kapoor went viral and the diva turned red hot. But when Ranbir Kapoor was asked to comment on the same, he just laughed off.

Die-hard fans of the famous (or should we say “infamous”) “Munna Bhai” can now look forward to seeing Bollywood’s real-time bad boy in a new film. Ironically, Sanjay Dutt who is currently serving a prison sentence in real life for firearms offences linked to 1993 Mumbai blasts, plays the role of a law enforcement officer in the forthcoming movie ‘Ungli’. The film faced some major hold-ups due to Sanjay Dutt’s prison release dates for shooting of the film and it had been doubted to ever reach
completion. Supremo-director and producer Karan Johar and director Rensil D’Silva said that it was their work ethic and determination that kept the belief going that they would complete the project. Johar has given the edgy film a noir comic twist in a setting of a sprawling metropolis, where corruption, intimidation and violence are a way of life. The film ‘Ungli’ perfectly captures the current mood in India of curbing corruption, bribery and intimidation in the upper echelons of power and

authority. It conveys, in an effective and humorous manner, a story of how five ordinary citizens can make a difference in a city blighted by dark forces whilst literally giving the proverbial ‘finger’ to the corrupt and dishonest. The ensemble cast consists of Sanjay Dutt, Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Randeep Hooda and boasts a terrific supporting cast. Audiences can also look forward to the stunning Shraddha Kapoor as she makes a special appearance in an item number not to be missed.
Asian Express caught up with Sanjay Dutt: Q. You perform a lot of stunts and take part in numerous fight scenes during this film; did you find this physically challenging? A: It just so happens I am in the best shape of my life right now. I’ve lost a lot of weight and my fitness has got a lot better which meant I actually could enjoy all the stunts.
Q. Have you got any tips for keeping in such good shape?
A: Exercise! I know it sounds obvious but so many people talk about losing weight and gaining muscle but aren’t willing to put in the hard work to actually achieve it. Diet is also really important, you can exercise as much as you want but if you aren’t willing to change your diet then you won’t see a change.
Q. Did you enjoy having Rensil D’Silva as the director?
A: I think what makes Rensil such an amazing director is the fact he genuinely cares for his cast and really wants the best for them. It’s fairly unique to get someone like that, for me personally it means I have a deep respect for Rensil not only as a director, but as a friend.
Q. In this film, you play a hardline police officer called Inspector Kale, did you enjoy playing this role?
A: I think Inspector Kale is simply misunderstood (laughs). I really enjoyed playing Kale, the stuns were all really fun and doing the fight scenes with the cast was hysterical. It’s fun playing the villain now and again, villains are so simple and you don’t have to worry about the audience loving you. My character is able to get away with anything and I think that sort of character is always the most enjoyable to play.

‘Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain” British actress says 74
Entertainment
www.asianexpress.co.uk
Cassically trained British actress Fagun Thakrar has been in Hollywood promoting the historical drama that she stars in along with co-star Martin Sheen. 'Bhopal: A Prayer For Rain', has been inspired by the world’s worst real-life industrial disaster that resulted in more than 10,000 deaths in December 1984. Leicester-born Fagun moved to London where she studied Medicine at the University College London and also has a Masters in Acting from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. As part of her preparation for the character of “Rekha” in the film, Fagun began
how making the film changed her
One man – two voices! Odd but strangely captivating singer who effortlessly switches between male and female vocals Imagine the magical voice of Lata Mangeshkar combined with the velvet tones of Mohammed Rafi – both coming from one singer. Dual vocalist, Sairam Iyer’s captivating solo performances see him effortlessly switch between male and female vocals with incredible skill. One of the first dual vocalists from India to reach global popularity, Sairam has performed over 1,500 shows across the world, even performing alongside the guitar legend Carlos Santana and Alice Coltrane, the pianist wife of Sir John Coltrane. Drawing inspiration from notable Indian cinema playback singers, Sairam began his vocal career recreating the top Bollywood female playback singers of the time. Sairam has since moved into the playback arena for Bollywood films himself and has the unique distinction of being the only male playback who can perform playback for a female actress as well. Recognising this unusual talent, he was signed to record label BMG Crescendo in India and released a romantic music album aptly named ‘Aisa Bhi Kabhi Hota Hai’ containing two duets (you don’t need a singing partner when you are Sairam), two female solos and two male solos. Having learned Hindustani classical vocal music from eminent stalwarts like the late
Pandit Ramesh Nadkarni and Pandit Shri Dhruva Ghosh at the Sangeet Mahabharati Institution, Sairam acquired a diploma in Hindustani classical vocal music from the University of Mumbai, training under eminent music directors Shri Kamlakar Bhagwat and Shri Achyut Thakur. Entering his teenage years, Sairam’s voice transitioned into maturity, effectively losing its childlike softness. After several years of devoted retraining and fierce determination, Sairam rediscovered his earlier ability to sing in a female voice, paving the way for an incredible talent of performing male and female duets simultaneously. His ability to reproduce on stage, the magical voices of his idols, is undeniably impressive. Sairam can perform classic duets unaccompanied. In amazing solo performances, he can comfortably match the scintillating heights of Asha Bhosle with the unique flamboyance of the late Kishore Kumar. His perfect execution of the subtle nuances of distinguished singers has earned him praise from maestros of the Indian cinema industry, such as Shahrukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Juhi Chawla and Kajol; even impressing global Queen of Pop, Madonna. For the first time, Sairam will be conducting a UK media tour, discussing his unique assimilation of male and female vocals.
researching and came across a sepia toned photo taken at the time of the disaster that showed a little girl comforting her toddler brother. The girl was looking straight at the camera, sitting next her dead parents. This picture, had a deep harrowing impact on Fagun, as she felt that little girl's eyes were watching and asking for her story to be told to the world. The British actress says as she continued to research the disaster in Bhopal, she discovered that the Union Carbide plant still stands, now abandoned, in the city where it caused so much destruction. Fagun says: “As I was recreating those end-of-life moments I realise how much those innocent people suffered that night while wandering blinded by the burning sensation of the
December 2014 - 1st Edition poisonous gas. “This disaster hit the poorest and weakest of society disproportionately hard. Those running away from the plant on foot ended up taking even more of the gas into their lungs from the exertion. Children were particularly susceptible due to their height.” Fagun’s character, "Rekha" carries the emotional weight of the loss of her husband who is the first one to be killed in an industrial accident in the Carbide plant a few months prior to the big disaster. Her role serves as a reminder throughout the film of the true human cost of putting profits above people. Directed by Ravi Walia, ‘Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain’ stars Martin Sheen, Mischa
Barton, Kal Penn, Rajpal Yadav, Tannishtha Chatterjee, and Fagun Thakrar. It releases in cinemas worldwide on 5th December.

The film follows a group of friends who have had enough of the corruption that faces them every day and decide to take it upon themselves to change things. Q. A dominant feature at its low front end is a single-frame grille displaying the four rings that is integrated into the automobile architecture. The large radiator grille has been widened much more, and it is positioned lower than on today’s production models. Its strong horizontal effect expresses an image of powerful dynamics. The cross bars have a finely structured diamond pattern, and their ends are split. The headlights – shaped like wide, flat wedges – are located with their tips above the Singleframe. They present high-resolution Matrix laser technology: an innovation from Audi, which opens up new approaches to headlight design and enables completely new functionalities. The pupils of the headlights are formed by a projection lens with a laser light source – they generate a matrix that illuminates the entire street in high resolution.
Hovering beneath this element are five plastic lenses that are supplied with light via a glass fibre bundle, which are mounted to a lightweight structure and further extend the high-beam light. The new laser technology lets lighting designers create an extremely lightweight, compact and elegant eye-shaped form. Audi quattro DNA visualised Also new is the sculptural form of the air intakes under the headlights – the distinctive air intakes have diamond pattern screens in their interiors. A dynamically contoured blade, which is clearly separated from the bumper by a gap, elicits associations to motor sport. Mounted to it are two additional spoilers in glossy black, which give the show car an even stronger and wider stance on the road. In side profile, its flowing silhouette expresses the character of forward motion in the Audi prologue. Balanced proportions put equal emphasis on the front and rear wheels – a clear reference to the quattro DNA of Audi. The powerful 22-inch wheels are set in widely flared wheel arches.
They are fitted with tyres of size 285/30. Each wheel’s ten intertwining Y spokes project a filigreed, three-dimensional and powerful image. A characteristic feature of the Audi prologue are the flared shoulders above the wheels, front and rear. Like the blisters of the original Audi Ur-quattro of the 1980s, they visualise the quattro drive – but they are no longer just added on, rather they are worked into the flow of the base architecture. The wings, doors and rear side panels show curved muscular surfaces. The lower door area has a low concave shape that runs upwards to the rear – a motif that links to the design theme of air inlets. Aluminium components in hand-finished quality The door mirrors are small aluminium sculptures: The mirror housings in the form of a shell create a flowing transition to the window slot trim. They also integrate the open-door sensor surfaces. The doors have no handles, and they are opened electromechanically when the illuminated sensor surfaces are
touched. Vast areas of the stiff multimaterial body of the Audi prologue consist of aluminium and ultra-high-strength steel. The windows are framed by matt and polished aluminium trim strips. At the end of the low roof dome, the window framing transitions into a solid surface of aluminium; its workmanship illustrates the handcraft-like manufacturing quality of Audi, and it enables lowering of the windows despite the C-pillars. This area integrates the fuel tank lid on the right side of the show car. It has an electric opening mechanism and can be lowered completely into the C-pillar by pressing a button in the interior. For enhanced convenience in refuelling, the tank closure does not have a cap. The paint is a light diva grey, a new type of pearl effect paint, which has a warm and elegant appearance. Rear section drives it forward The rear section of the Audi prologue also breaks with conventions. It is angled in the driving direction and is reminiscent of the side and rear views of a luxurious yacht; the sickle-shaped
seam between the side panel and the bumper emphasises this dynamism. The edge of the boot lid, which is executed as a discreet spoiler, picks up on the blister line coming from the side panel. Between the Cpillars, the rear window has a concave inward curve – it closes off the passenger compartment while enabling convenient cargo loading with the separate boot lid. The Audi prologue unites the positive aspects of a saloon with the aesthetic highlights of a coupe. The unconventional design of the LED rear lights with their 3D glass gives the tail lights all of the benefits of the new design: the new, long tail lights run across the entire width of the car. At its termination point, the light illuminates the frame of the embossed 3D form. Fine lines in the 3D glass appear to hover in the middle of the light. The brake light is located deep inside the lighting unit. When braking, the bottom of the 3D imprint is also illuminated, which makes the light appear to move towards the observer. This configuration on different levels, and the alternation between 2D and

3D lighting functions lets the observer experience the tail lights in an entirely new dynamic way. Beneath the bumper, there is a diffuser made of black anodised aluminium; like the front blade, it extends over the full width of the car as a separate, significantly recessed element. The diffuser integrates two trapezoid-shaped inlets which visually coordinate with the embossed tail lights and house the exhaust system tailpipes. Luxurious and innovative The spacious interior of the Audi prologue is like a luxurious lounge. It is based on Gran Turismo design, and it enables both very focused driving and relaxed touring. The interface visually adapts to the specific driving style. The interior marks the beginning of a new design era at Audi, in which the architecture merges with the operating concept to form one unit. The surfaces for displays and controls are innovatively integrated into the instrument panel and console of the centre tunnel, and the infotainment system brings driver and passenger into dialog with one another. When entering the vehicle, the four-seat coupe receives its passengers with polite hospitality. The “butler” – an innovative intelligent software program – identifies them based on their
smartphones and adjusts the seats and climate control system according to their preferences. The system also makes recommendations for music and route planning that are oriented towards the owner’s preferences. The Easy Slot system, an advanced development of the Audi phone box, is located under lids in the centre console. A special mechanism networks the smartphones of passengers to the vehicle infotainment system and charges them. Generous open interior space Tautly stretched lines and lean geometric forms give the interior a light and clear ambience. The instrument panel has a light and elegant appearance with its strictly horizontal layout that is not interrupted anywhere, and it emphasises the generous interior width. It lowers itself towards the interior on two levels. The upper level is positioned, like a roof, above the Audi virtual cockpit future – an advanced development of the Audi virtual cockpit – and above the line of air vents. It is part of the wraparound – a large arc that encircles the driver and front passenger. A second wrap-around joins the front and rear sections of the interior and is already quite visible from the exterior. The centre console with its
pass-through also appears to hover, as do the front seats, whose rails are mounted on the tunnel and side sills. The head restraints of the two rear bucket seats are lowered when not in use; they automatically extend when a passenger enters the rear seating area with the electric easy entry function. When the sound system is activated, a new type of sound spoiler extends from the rear shelf; it optimally produces a premium sound in the car that is typical of Audi. Natural materials communicate a new luxury For Audi designers from the colour and trim area, natural materials are the new luxury; all of the materials in the show car fascinate with their authenticity. The surfaces of the seats and seat backs, the dashboard, the console on the centre tunnel and the armrests are covered in light-coloured “passion” leather – a new soft grade of leather that emphasises the natural characteristics of the animal hide. Soft nubuck leather, also in a light colour, covers the backs of the seats and the side panel trim of the rear seating area. On the instrument panel, the grey-brown trim of the lower section provides another strong accent. The wrap-around is upholstered in dark “passion” leather; here, and in

many other areas, aluminium trim strips contrast with panels of opengrained silver-grey elm wood veneer. Dynamic yet convenient The technology of the Audi prologue is as sophisticated as its interior is emotion-evoking. The 4.0 TFSI, which is installed in the engine compartment like a technical masterpiece, produces 605 PS and 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft) of torque; in overboost mode, which the driver can call up for around 15 seconds, a boosted torque of 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft) is available. The sonorous biturbo V8 accelerates the two-door coupe, which has an unladen weight of 1,980 kilograms (4365.2 lb) from 0 to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds. The show car is capable of returning to 32.8mpg combined, which equates to CO2 emissions of 199 grams per kilometre. One contributor to this high efficiency is a new 48-volt subsystem of the vehicle electrical system – this is a technology that will soon be introduced to production cars at Audi. The 48-volt system is supplied by a powerful belt starter generator, which turns the powertrain into a mild hybrid and has an energy recovery output of up to 12 kW during braking. An eight-speed tiptronic directs engine power to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive,
83
which works closely with torque vectoring. New five-link wheel suspensions In the chassis, the adaptive air suspension sport – an air suspension with controlled damping – offers a large adjustment range between smooth rolling and very tight handling; it also varies the show car’s ground clearance over several levels. The front and rear suspensions are engineered as lightweight five-link designs. The large carbon-fibre ceramic brake discs decelerate the show car powerfully. On the 20-inch front brakes, they are gripped by sixpiston fixed calipers. A technology highlight of the Audi prologue is its dynamic all-wheel steering – it boosts driving dynamics and ride comfort by an intelligent combination of dynamic and allwheel steering. The driver therefore can enjoy an automobile with extremely good handling. In the lower speed range, this is made evident by better agility and turning ability. In the higher speed range, developers improved the car’s responsiveness which leads to greater vehicle stability. Overall, dynamic all-wheel steering – with rear wheel steering angles of up to five degrees – makes it easy to manoeuvre when parking and offers precise steering on country roads and impressively comfortable steering on freeways.

Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake Breathtakingly sporty proportions and a powerfully dynamic design idiom with sensuously shaped surfaces already made the CLA unmistakable in its four-door Coupé guise. It is now followed by a further design icon, the CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake, with a unique look all of its own. The fourth high-performance compact car from Mercedes-AMG adopts the same philosophy as the successful CLS 63 AMG Shooting Brake by taking the form of a sports car with five seats and a large tailgate. The five-door newcomer plays out its role as an individual, extravagant trendsetter for connoisseurs to perfection: stylish, cool and right in touch with the times, the design and dynamic performance of the compact-sized Shooting Brake from AMG will satisfy even the most discerning demands. Despite the sporty, progressive looks, featuring a roof line that slopes down gently towards the rear, low-set cabin, long bonnet, exaggerated, high beltlineand a dynamically styled tail end. Absolutely no compromises have to be made when it comes to everyday practicality: thanks to a versatile luggage compartment with a maximum capacity of 1354 litres and the increase in headroom compared to the four-door coupé. Bentley Grand Convertible – the ultimate British luxury car?
The ultimate expression of British automotive luxury is imagined with the Bentley Grand Convertible, the most sophisticated open-top car ever created by Bentley. Iconic yet understated in style and fashioned entirely by hand from the very finest materials, this unrivalled flagship of luxury represents the ultimate in powerful, sensuous roofless motoring. Resplendent in Sequin Blue, originally a bespoke colour created from a single sequin from a customer's haute couture gown, the Grand Convertible features a silver "liquid metal" finish to the bonnet and windscreen frame. Contrasting the rich blue body work is the Bentley directional wheel design, handed to the left and right sides of the car and finished by hand before being polished to a high shine. The wheels hint at the enormous power and torque that wait under the bonnet. With 537 PS (530 bhp / 395 kW) and 1,100 Nm (811 lb.ft) of torque from Bentley's legendary 6¾litre twin-turbo V8 engine of the flagship Mulsanne, the Grand Convertible promises the luxury of effortless performance to match its unparalleled style. As cossetting as it is breath-taking, the interior of the Grand Convertible is a showcase for the abilities of
Bentley's master craftsmen. Fourteen naturally tanned leather hides are merged together with progressivediamond quilting, with the shape of the pattern changing over the seats and doors in a cabin sized for four adults.
Fashioned entirely by hand, this expanse of veneer is only paralleled by the creations of the world's best furniture makers, and is finished with elegant parallel lines of chromed steel. Bentley Chairman and CEO, Wolfgang Dürheimer commented:
“This concept demonstrates Bentley's ability to create a pinnacle convertible Grand Tourer, while embodying elegance beyond compare.” Bright blue is used to highlight the extraordinary skill of Bentley's trim specialists, with Sequin Blue thread cross-stitched by hand through the linen-coloured leather. The light hide is contrasted by the sleek elegance of Beluga leather around the top of the doors and extending back to the rear tonneau, framed in polished chrome. The tonneau itself provides the most significant example of Bentley craftsmanship at its finest. Replete with book-matched, mirror-finished and dark-stained Burr Walnut, the tonneau features the largest piece of wood veneer ever applied to a Bentley.
"This concept demonstrates Bentley's ability to create a pinnacle convertible Grand Tourer, while embodying elegance beyond compare. “With this car we combine the opulent Mulsanne experience with the full sensory indulgence of open-air touring, continuing to unite luxury and performance in new ways. “We are eagerly awaiting the response of our customers to this car. We will ensure that this car - if it reaches the roads - will be a highly exclusive, extremely limited collector's piece."

Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to
take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Monday and Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the
country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.
Tino’s topple leaders Tetley’s Tino 2-1 Hyde Park In what was a repeat of last Thursday’s cup semi-final, Tetley’s Tino stunned league leaders Hyde Park by the single goal as they moved to within three points of third spot. A last minute goal from Hasan Abrar gifted his side all three points in a 2-1 win, as the table toppers failed to take advantage of dropped points elsewhere which could have seen them stretch their lead at the summit. Despite being the dominant team for the majority of the game, Hyde Park were unable to take their early chances with Jameel, Tyler Bussue and Kadeem Walker all coming close. The Tinos failed to produce one effort on goal in the first half and must have thought their luck was running out when Bussue opened the scoring for Hyde Park with a deflected effort from range. Hyde Park continued to keep the ball well and looked the most likely to score next until Shazad Hussain picked up the ball. A precise through-ball from the playmaker set up Brudy who fired in a fine goal to level the scores at one apiece. Hyde Park continued to push on, throwing men forward to get the winner, yet it was in the dying stages that Tinos stole possession
High-flyers stumble as chasing pack take advantage from the favourites. Former Hyde Park man, Abdul Wahab, once again came back to haunt his previous team as his low effort cannoned off the post and there was talisman Abrar on hand to convert the rebound. Hyde Park were made to rue
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Hamza Ismail and Haseeb Ahmed have had quite the season so far with both forwards firing Borussia Teeth to a comfortable mid-table position. The side are the top scorers in the league and it comes as no surprise that the deadly duo are topping the individual standings as well.
their missed chances yet results elsewhere ensured they remain three points clear at the top of the SLUK table. MOTM – Despite Hyde Park succumbing to defeat, Idris Hussain dictated the game for the league leaders.
Sport
... rest of the action Samba 1-0 NFA
Two defeats in a row for high-flying NFA saw them stumble at the hands of Samba FC, with just one goal in the game settling proceedings. Despite having the league’s second worst defence, a resilient defensive display from the underdogs helped guide them to victory in an entertaining match. The deciding goal came half way through the first half from a fine counter-attacking move. Samba’s Jamran carried the ball from wide on the left, only to cut inside and play a first time pass to the over lapping Luqman Mahmood who executed brilliantly with a low right-footed shot. MOTM: Samba’s Raheem Hussain was not letting anything get into his goal.
Super Six 4-1 Al Aqs
The league’s in-form side, Super Six, picked up back to back wins with a 4-1 thrashing of Al Aqs. Man-of-the-match Wasim Rashid was once again on the scoresheet as he netted the opener in the first minute. Mukhtar Azam made it 2-0 shortly after with a brilliant run from the half way line, matched by his precise finish. Al Aqs’ Nawaz had a great chance to pull one back from the penalty spot but a great save denied him the goal. In the Second half another penalty was awarded to AlAqs, and this time it was Dilal Ahmed who stepped up and made no mistake. Super Six continued to press to recapture their two goal lead and their attack football soon paid off with goals from Amir Ali Khan and Haseeb Ahmed completing the rout. MOTM: Wasim Rashid produced a great goal in the opening minute to send his team on their way to an emphatic victory.
Old Bacca Boys 3-0 Half a Dozen
It has been a great two weeks for Old Bacca Boys, who lifted the cup last week and on Thursday moved to within five points of top spot with a 3-0 win over bottom side Half a Dozen. Players were made to wait until the second half before the first goal was finally seen with super-sub Muhammed Kamal coming on at the break to hammer home the opener just one minute into the half. Minutes later Kamal got the team’s, and his second, after being played through by Sultan Khan and finishing with ease. Minutes from the end, Khan was once again in the middle of OBB’s attacking play, laying on the ball for Faisal who rounded off a 3-0 win. MOTM: Sultan Khan’s vision on the pitch was to be admired as he claimed two assists in the second half.
Borussia Teeth 4-0 Jubodhol
When Borussia Teeth play you are almost guaranteed to see goals, and that was the case last week when the free scorers thumped Jubodhol by four goals to nil. A Hamza Ismail hat-trick guided the league’s top scorers to victory in a game which also saw the return of Borussia captain, Rajjack Ahmed. Haseeb Ahmed also found his name on the scoring sheet with the goal of the game, after a long surging run from his own half, skipping past three players, and with a bt of luck, slid the ball past the keeper. A much improved second half from Jubodhol, saw the side come out more organised yet the result was never in doubt. MOTM: Hamza Ismail’s hat-trick took his own tally to 18 for the season and moved Borussia to within three points of their opponents in third.

Cook suspended England captain Alastair Cook has been handed a one-match suspension for a second slow over-rate offence within 12 months, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Thursday. England beat Sri Lanka by five wickets in a rainshortened match at Hambantota on Wednesday but were one over short of their target at the end of the match when time allowances were taken into consideration, the ICC said in a statement. “As Cook had previously
BILLY JOE SAUNDERS WINS IN AN EPIC BOXING BATTLE AGAINST CHRIS EUBANK JR By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
In boxing when both opponents remain standing at the end of the fight the outcome is left in the hands of judges as to how they viewed the fight. The knockout of an opponent will always confirm the winner but the judges’ score cards leave the correct decision in doubt. Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr on Saturday evening came into their boxing bout evenly matched and both undefeated that made this contest an intriguing one. Saunders and Eubank Jr had clearly shown a dislike towards each other and this would mean when they entered the ring it would be all out war between them and they would both try and inflict as much damage on each other as possible. In this fight there were no knockouts and this fight was decided via judge’s decision. Saunders managed to win a splitdecision over Eubank Jr and defend his British, European and Commonwealth middleweight titles, but according to him it was his hardest fight to date. Eubank Jr had never been past eight rounds as a professional as he had usually finished a fight via knockout before then and in my opinion may have been too inexperienced coming into this fight. Saunders had fought more established fighters and built up his experience
Khalil Alam
following a previous successful amateur boxing career. Physically Eubank was stronger than Saunders, but Saunders had also trained very hard for this fight and his experience and confidence clearly showed as he managed to win the earlier rounds clearly. Eubank Jr however managed to settle down after round five and started to make this a competitive boxing bout and as the rounds went on Eubank Jr clearly realising that he was behind on the scorecard’s started to look for that one big knockout punch to finish the fight, but the worthy champion Saunders managed to weather the storm and win a 12 round decision. I have no doubt that the inexperienced Eubank Jr will win a championship belt in the future, but against Saunders it was his experience of fighting high level opposition, over confidence and lack of game plan that let him down and this loss could be a blessing in disguise as he will have learned a lot from this defeat. I also have to question the role of his father (Chris Eubank Snr) in Eubank Jnr boxing career as sometimes parent’s overly zealous attitude can intimidate his child who is still figuring out the sport. In fact previous research indicates that a son’s/ daughters performance may even be “hindered by overly competitive parent because of the internalized anxiety brought on by this additional stress.” I strongly feel that Eubank Jnr may need to change things in his boxing camp and career in order to succeed as a boxer. In regards to the fight the judge’s decision was correct and Saunders won clearly but had Eubank started this fight as competitively as he finished then he would have been the winner. However we can now look forward to a rematch as I believe this is just the start of this great boxing rivalry.
been found guilty of a minor over rate offence in OneDay Internationals within the last 12 months, this offence constituted his second minor over rate offence...,” the governing body said explaining the suspension. Cook, who scored 34 on Wednesday, was also fined 20 percent of his match fee, while his team mates were docked 10 percent. He will miss the fourth one dayer to be played in Colombo on Sunday with Sri Lanka 2-1 up in the sevenmatch series.
OUT: Alastair Cook will not be a popular man in the England squad after his suspension cost all teammates 10 per cent of their match fees
‘We must engage more with South Asian Community’ Leicestershire CCC chief exec sets targets ahead of action packed 2015
TARGETS: Wasim Khan MBE has been the chief executive of Leicestershire CCC for just over a month and hopes to bring more South Asian players out of the youth systems and into the senior game
County cricket may be at the back of many people’s minds at this time of year yet for Leicestershire’s new head, plans are already well underway for the 2015 campaign. Wasim Khan MBE was appointed as the Midlands’ club’s chief executive at the end of October, laying out his plans for the New Year and his aims for the team. With vast experience in community projects, through his work with the Professional Cricketers Association and the Cricket Foundation, Khan has put community engagement at the forefront of his objectives. He stressed that although working with the South Asian community is something that is extremely important, it is vital that the Club looks to engage with the whole community in Leicester,
Leicestershire and Rutland. He said: “I don’t believe that the issue of engaging with the South Asian community is a problem that lies with Leicestershire alone. “In highly South Asian demographic areas, I think that everybody would hold their hands up in cricket and say that based on participation levels and the number of young South Asians in county age group squads around the country, the conversion rate is still very low. “There is clearly a blockage in the system somewhere and I would like to think that Leicestershire can place itself at the forefront of addressing this. “It would be great for us to be the pioneers of a pathway that sees more young cricketers from South Asian backgrounds transitioning
into the professional game.” Acknowledging that it may be a tough task to achieve all his targets, Khan added that he is certainly up for the challenge and hopes Leicestershire CCC can become a leader for community engagement in the league. He said: “We are fortunate that we have a very active and very successful Leicestershire and Rutland Cricket board here. They do a huge amount of good work in the community and there’s a real opportunity for us to work very closely together. “There is a great platform to look at everything that we do. We want to be become family-centred and engage more with the South Asian community. We want to create more of an emotional connection with people so that they feel that this is their community Club.”

Diversifying the boardroom One hundred and fifty people from across the sports sector and BME professionals, gathered at the House of Lords last month in an attempt to ‘diversify the boardroom’. Currently in Britain, only three per cent of people serving on the boards of the nation’s sporting bodies are from BME communities, whilst 30 sports have no senior BME representation on any level. Other data presented at the meeting included just one national sporting body with two BME board trustees and only seven of 216 management positions are held by the same demographic. This information, plus more, was highlighted in Sporting Equals’ latest report, ‘Who’s on Board?’, and was obtained from an audit of 45 national governing bodies of sport conducted by Sport England. Arun Kang, the Chief Executive of Sporting Equals, said: “The fact that so many people from sport and BME professionals have come together at

a major event to help diversify boards is very encouraging and shows the passion and interest that there is in this issue.” A key recommendation from the event was to set up a national steering group to help national governing bodies of sport diversify their boardrooms. It will be looking at a wide range of options including co-options, shadowing opportunities, advisory roles and promoting Board vacancies more widely. Likewise, another recommendation was to develop a database of candidates, empower potential BME candidates through training opportunities and develop an annual plan of action. Edward Lord, Chairman of the Amateur Swimming Association, was present at the meeting and said he was delighted to have been approached on behalf of the ASA, to make the sporting body a member of the proposed national steering group. He said: “The ASA is in full support of this agenda and I very much look forward to working in partnership with them to help attract, welcome and benefit from the development of a
more representative and diverse board membership across our sporting nation.” Mr Kang added: “Diversifying boards makes good business sense. Research shows they make for better decision making and are more profitable. Sport already contributes significantly to the English economy. “Diversifying the top positions in sport will therefore be a win-win, meaning more people will participate and sport will make a substantially greater financial contribution to our country.” There is growing evidence to support the economic case for diversifying sport – which already contributes over £20 billion to the English economy. Research conducted by global management consultant McKinsey and Company in 2012 found that for companies ranked in the top 25% for executive-board diversity, the return on equity was 53 percent higher, on average, than it was for those in the bottom 25 per cent. At the same time, earnings before income tax at the most diverse companies were 14 percent higher, on average, than those of the least diverse companies.

“I am now targeting a fight in mid-January some time but until then I will just keep training hard.” When he is not in the gym, Khan is in the classroom as he works as a part-time teacher at Bradford’s Atlas Primary School. It is a profession which has helped Khan ‘break up his day’ and one he says he really enjoys, yet he remains certain
that his boxing career is far from over. “I’m feeling strong now and my recovery has been a long one but it is finally over,” he added. “Everything is going to plan with my training and diet, and I really want to push on now and get back to where I was before the injury. “It is my aim to bring the titles back to Bradford and Leeds so I just want to thank all my fans and sponsors, Kingsland Business Recovery and Janan, for continuing to stay behind me.” The 31-year-old has a record of seven wins and just the one loss in his injury-hit career, and is now hoping to press on and add more victories to his own tally in January.

After last weekend’s scheduled fight was forced to be cancelled at the eleventh hour, local boxer Tasif Khan vows to come back stronger after failing to find a replacement opponent. It was to be a long-awaited ring return for the super-bantamweight competitor who had been out of action for more than two years since injuring his hand back in 2012. And, after what he described as a ‘lifetime’ on the sidelines, Khan was finally prepared to put the gloves back on for the first time on Sunday in front of a host of expectant fans in Leeds’ Control Nightclub.
