PRIME MINISTER AT ASIAN EXPRESS HQ David Cameron pays a visit to Britain’s largest free Asian newspaper and joins ABDN conference with Yorkshire’s business leaders Prime Minister David Cameron traded 10 Downing Street for 4 Armley Court earlier this week as he paid a visit to the UK’s largest free pick-up Asian publication. The Prime Minister graced the offices of Asian Express Newspaper on Thursday 5th February, as part of his visit to Yorkshire where he further pledged his commitment to end the ‘decades old divide between the North and South’. Mr Cameron seemed very relaxed as he met with the dedicated team of Asian Express, who welcomed his arrival at the Leeds-based offices. A few jokes were cracked about how tall the PM actually was,

EXCLUSIVE: Mr Cameron has a one-to-one discussion with Managing Editor Andleeb Hanif and MD Nadim Hanif

where Mr Cameron laughingly stated that TV cameras make everyone seem short and stout. Being led on a tour of the Asian Express Newspaper office’s by cofounders, Managing Director Nadim Hanif, and Editor-in-Chief, Andleeb Hanif, Mr Cameron viewed some of the recent front page headlines and commended the newspaper for its work on not just a local but national level. The Prime Minister had also facilitated a conference with the Asian Business Development Network (ABDN) in Leeds, which has recently been acquired by Nadim Hanif. A number of Yorkshire’s most influential Asian business leaders attended the

meeting, chaired by Mr Gurdev Dahele. Mr Cameron spoke to them about the launch of the Yorkshire phase of the government’s economic ‘Northern Powerhouse’ scheme, and reiterated the importance of Asian businesses and the role they play in Britain’s recovering economy. Matters of concern to small and medium sized ethnic businesses were discussed, as well as the absence, or very little representation, of Asians in LEPs, and subsequent opportunities for professionals to hold higher executive roles on a local government level. He recognised the

Remember to Register

Letters are dropping on doormats all over Leeds this week to remind people to check whether they’re registered to vote. Last year a new national system of individual electoral registration (IER) was introduced which means that instead of one person replying on behalf of the household, everyone eligible to vote has to confirm individually that they’re registered. To try to make sure no-one has inadvertently slipped through the net under the new arrangements, Leeds City Council has written to every household in the city- around 340,000 homes. Further information is available online at www.leeds.gov.uk/yourvotematters and you can also contact the elections helpline on 0113 222 441.

Leeds’ flood protection

Work has begun on a major multi-million pound flood defence scheme in Leeds, which will protect thousands of homes and businesses and bring about economic benefits in the city. The £45million Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme, which is one of the largest river flood defence schemes in the country, will see major construction work along the River Aire in the city centre and Holbeck extending 4.3km between Leeds train station and Thwaite Mills. The scheme includes the installation of innovative moveable weirs at Crown Point and at Knostrop which will be the first of their kind to be used for flood defence in the UK. By Spring 2017, once completed, the defences will provide the city centre and over 3,000 homes and 500 businesses with protection against flood events from the River Aire and the Hol Beck.

Student rewarded for self less homeless project

Star Citizen Sarish A fundraising teen from Bradford was joined by the likes of Amir Khan and Prince Charles last week as she was chosen to represent Yorkshire at a national NCS event. Sarish Saghir, a Year 12 student at Bradford Girls Grammars School, worked tirelessly as a volunteer over the Christmas period through the National Citizenship Service, helping homeless people in the city. After successfully securing a £2,000 donation through the Starbucks Youth Action programme, Sarish teamed up with a group of volunteers to buy and distribute clothing, blankets, sleeping bags and food, to those less fortunate. As a result of the project, self entitled ‘Hope for the Homeless’, the Girlington volunteer was selected to attend a special VIP event in Sunderland on Tuesday 27th January, alongside 100 other young people. The event was organised to recognise the significant commitment of NCS volunteers like Sarish, who have collectively given over three million hours to their communities. Although she may not have had the opportunity to meet His Royal Highness, she was

delighted when the Royal stopped to listen to her presentation about her recent social action project. After the presentation Sarish was then able to meet Olympic Medallist and NCS Ambassador, Amir Khan, to talk about her volunteering work. “He was really interested to hear about what I had been doing,” she said. “He said he was very impressed by my commitment and encouraged me to continue the good work. “Amir was so friendly and happy to spend time with all of us, answering questions about his family and about his anticipated fight with Floyd Mayweather. “He was even happy to pose for selfies.” Sarish was invited to the event following the completion of the NCS Leaders Programme – an

intensive, week-long residential course in London. Only one hundred volunteers, from the 40,000 young people who participate in the national programme, are nominated to take part in the course every year. Sarish now plans to continue her volunteering work through the NCS and the Sixth Form Community Volunteering Programme (CVP), recently introduced to encourage students to get involved in community projects both within the school, through a mentoring programme, and out in the local community. With a partnership secured with the national volunteering charity, ‘vInspired’, students are able to work towards the V50 and V100 volunteering awards which are recognised by universities and major employers. Sarish has already clocked up over 50 hours of volunteering work and now has her sights firmly set on a V100 award.

“He was really interested to hear about what I had been doing. He said he was very impressed by my commitment and encouraged me to continue the good work.” SELFIE: Sarish met with Amir Khan and spoke about her work in Bradford with the homeless

Qatari students who currently study at the University of Huddersfield, were joined by fellow academics, teaching staff and special guests last month as they celebrated the annual ‘Qatar National Day’. The event was held on campus as a way for students to celebrate and share their nation’s heritage, despite being a long way from home in West Yorkshire. On the day, guests were in traditional dress and took part in a number of customs, including native sword and flag dancing, whilst others ran individual stalls with traditional sweet and savoury food on offer. Traditional board games were also played with around 250 students from the University in attendance. President of the University’s Qatari Student Society, Jassim Musa Almahmoud, was extremely pleased with how well the celebration was received and is looking forward to holding a similar event next year. “It was a dream for us to celebrate such an event at our university,” he said, “we even made the Qatari media because of the events huge success. “I would like to offer a big thank you to everyone who came and special thanks to our VIP guest Dr Al-Kaabi for his most welcome visit.” Dr Mohammed Al-Kaabi is the Cultural Attaché of the Ambassador’s Office at the Qatar Embassy in London, and was joined as a guest by professional footballer, Ali Al-Habsi. The Qatari Student Society at the University of Huddersfield is one of 55 international student societies and their popularity is growing as students get the chance

Alan Tobi, International Marketing Officer at the University helps the societies host their events on campus. “The societies offer all our students a great opportunity to integrate, develop a better understanding of different cultures, languages and cuisines, host and celebrate their own cultures on campus, whilst inspiring them to enjoy an outstanding university experience,” he said. One such event, where all of the student societies come together, is ‘International Week’, which this year is to be held on campus between 2nd and 6th March. “This event always proves to be a real success, with students from

the UK and all over the world taking part in a week-long celebration of culture,” said Alan. “A big attraction of the week is the International Food and Culture Festival, which attracts over 2,000 students.” The University’s Director of International Development, Andrew Mandebura, added that he was also delighted by the increase of student activity on campus. He said: “ T h e University has taken active steps in recent years to encourage our students from the U K and

Shocking ‘halal’ slaughter house Sheep taunted, hacked at, and abused at North Yorkshire abattoir Four men have had their licences revoked and another was dismissed by a halal slaughterhouse in Thirsk this week, after images of shocking malpractice were secretly filmed onsite. English owned abattoir, Bowood Lamb, was filmed by the vegan ‘Animal Aid’ organisation in December, with footage showing sheep, set for halal slaughter, being abused and mistreated. The five men seen on the footage, who are reportedly not all Muslim, are seen kicking sheep, throwing the animals against walls, taunting and frightening them with knives, hacking at the throats with saws, plus one worker standing on the head of a conscious sheep before jumping up-and-down. All these actions are against the halal code, which states animals must not be mistreated before slaughter and only killed via one clean cut with a sharp knife to the jugular vein, carotoid artery and windpipe. They must also not see the blade before the cut is made. Bowood Lamb’s solicitor, Jamie Foster, speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Farming Today, said the company immediately took action against the men in the footage. He said: “The piece we saw that involved a slaughterman standing on the neck of a sheep is something

He said: “The problem with it is that Animal Aid is a vegan organisation that wants people to stop eating meat so they will capture some things that are very problematical and when they do, like they did on this occasion, a company will take action to deal with it. “[They] made it sound as if everything that the company does is wrong and that is simply not the case.” routine because Bowood is a key mission is ‘to expose and The Food Standards Agency company that takes animal welfare combat animal cruelty’. Bradford charity CEO slams education system

Drop in GCSE results a ‘wakeup call’

RESULTS: Dr Mohammed Ali, founder of the QED Foundation, says more has to be done to ensure the next generation of British Muslims are not undereducated and underemployed

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

The founder of a Bradford charity, which aims to break down barriers faced by South Asian members of the community, has urged other BME organisations to take up the issue of a ‘failing education system’. Dr Mohammed Ali OBE, founder and CEO of the QED Foundation, made the remarks after it was revealed that Bradford came second from bottom in national GCSE results. Nationally, the number of schools which failed to reach the minimum expectation of 40 per cent of children achieving the expected five A* to C grades, had more than doubled from the previous year to 330 secondary schools. 53 per cent of pupils nationally achieved at least the five expected grades, another steep fall from last year’s results of 59 per cent. Dr Ali said the latest report was a ‘wakeup call’ to the ‘catastrophic issue of the failings of the education system’, and something had to be done now to address this. “Here at the QED Foundation, we urge local BME and Muslim organisations throughout the country to take up the catastrophic issue of the failings of the education system for our young people with their local council,” he said. “As someone who works at the coalface of unemployment for ethnic minorities, primarily for those in Muslim communities, it is simply unacceptable that Bradford has been ranked almost bottom in the national league

table for GCSE results.” Mr Ali added that the two ‘pillars’ essential to the success of any community are education and employment – both things he says need improving in the city. Bradford was officially second bottom in the results table, alongside Blackpool, with only 44 per cent of students achieving the required grades. Merseyside was again bottom on 35 per cent.

fuelling racial divides. We must not let that happen. Education and employment are key to inclusion. “It is the only real solution for lasting, positive change. Education is the only hope, not just for the future of Bradford, but for British Muslims across the UK. “Education has a transformative power. It changes

“We must improve the education and employment prospects of young Muslims so that they feel part of mainstream society, and have the opportunity to positively contribute.” “We must improve the education and employment prospects of young Muslims so that they feel part of mainstream society, and have the opportunity to positively contribute,” he said. “The way the media is currently portraying Muslims as radicalised or terrorists, [makes] young British Muslims feel they are being targeted. “This in turn, increases feelings of hopelessness and alienation,

lives, always for the better, and yet our schools are failing young people at the very first hurdle. “This is a wakeup call.” Over the past 25 years, the QED Foundation has supported 30,000 ethnic minorities with education and employment skills, working on alleviating poverty, disadvantage and ignorance through adult education and retraining.

Officer saves family from smokefilled home

House Fire Hero A police officer from Leeds, who rescued a family from a fire at their home earlier this month, has been praised for his bravery and quick response to a potentially fatal incident. Response officer, PC Umer Saeed, was called out to a house in the Ireland Wood area of the city in the early hours after receiving a 999 call from a child. Upon arrival at the Luttrell Crescent address, the officer and his colleague saw the family in the upstairs window looking ‘distressed’, as smoke spread through the home. With the fire service still not in attendance, the officer grabbed a brick to smash through a downstairs window and climbed into the premises with the help of a garden chair. PC Saeed said: “We needed to get to the family as soon as possible and the front and back doors were high security ones that we knew we couldn’t break down. “I’ve had specialist training in getting in to buildings and identified the kitchen window as the most viable access point. I found a brick and smashed the window then climbed in. “The smoke was acrid and I couldn’t breathe but I was

focused on finding them and getting them out in one piece. It was quite a disorientating situation with the smoke alarm going off.” The fire had started after the cooker was left on by accident and despite attempts by the mother to control the situation by throwing a cloth over it, the blaze continued. She retreated from the smoke to an upstairs bedroom with her children where the fire service were then called. This is where PC Saeed found the family. “I ran up the stairs and checked every room before I found them in the furthest bedroom,” he added. “I ascertained where the keys for the doors were, as I didn’t want to get them out of the room, until I had a clear escape route to take them out. “The front door was locked and they didn’t have a key but they told me there was one in the back door. I ran back down to the kitchen and opened the back door and went upstairs and started getting them out. Fire fighters were on scene by this point, and I handed over to them”. The officer said he didn’t worry about the danger he was in during

the fire, and acted as quickly as possible - the same way he would have for his own family. “I didn’t think of it as putting myself at risk,” he said. “I quickly assessed the situation and decided I could get in safely and get them out. I could see they were frightened and needed immediate help.” The incident happened on the morning of 3rd January and PC Saeed has been back since to see the family who were staying with a relative after the fire. Temporary Chief Superintendent Mabs Hussain, Leeds District Commander, praised the officer’s work and commended his ‘bravery’. “PC Saeed clearly displayed the qualities of bravery and professionalism that we so often see from our officers and staff in situations where people are in danger,” he said. “He could see this family needed immediate help and his training gave him the confidence to assess the situation and intervene to bring them to safety from a potentially life-threatening situation. “I am very proud to have officers like him out there helping to keep our communities safe.”

Jani Rashid, a long time supporter of the Synagogue, was approached to join the council by chairman, Rudi Leavor, after his colleagues unanimously passed the decision. Mr Rashid will be involved in helping to secure funding for the last remaining synagogue in Bradford and work closely with fellow council members. Speaking of the appointment, Mr Leavor said he had wanted a Muslim to be formally represented on the board for some time and praised Mr Rashid’s commitment. “The appointment of Jani to our board is certainly the first example I have heard of a Muslim joining a Synagogue Council but our relationship with Jani has been there for a long time,” he said.

APPROVED: Rudi Leavor, Chairman of the Bradford Synagogue Council, recommended Jani Rashid join the council, which he accepted without hesitation

“It is an important step for our council to have a Muslim member on the board. It is not just for face-value because Jani merits the position and will bring a lot to the council.” He added: “Relations between Jews and Muslims around the world have been strained recently but this is a good example of our two religions working together here in Bradford.” The relationship between Bradford’s Jewish and Muslim community has grown in recent years, with the latter’s community groups, including the Council for Mosques, helping to fund the restoration of the Bowland Street place of worship in 2013. Mr Rashid, Head of Diversity and Cohesion for Bradford Council’s Department of Children’s Services, has been working in a ‘professional capacity’ with the Synagogue for almost a decade. Within his role on the city’s council, he has regularly taken schoolchildren on tours of the religious building in

Manningham and said he was now excited to take up the extra responsibility. “In a professional capacity I think my relationship with the synagogue began around ten years ago through my work with the diversity and cohesion team,” he said, “but I got involved with the fundraising side of things about four years ago. “In Bradford there is a small and aging Jewish community but the contribution they have made to this city is very considerable with the synagogue at the heart of much of this. It is therefore important that we do what we can to help keep this place of worship funded.” Upon receiving the request to join the council, he added: “It came as somewhat of a surprise but I am delighted to have been approached by the council and will work hard in my position. “This is a great example of how our two communities can live and work together and only indicates how far our relationship has developed in recent years.”

‘Evil’ husband convicted of murder Sadistic attack included 270 injuries with assortment of weapons

VICTIM: Sara Al Shourefi was murdered by her husband in March 2014

A Sheffield man, described as ‘controlling, possessive and jealous’ has been found guilty of his wife’s brutal murder and will be sentenced next week. Thahi Harroba Manaa, 37, inflicted more than 270 injuries to Sara Al Shourefi in March last year, using a metal bar and electric drill amongst other weapons, before putting her body in a cupboard underneath the stairs in their Firth Park home. A screw driver was still embedded in the victim’s eye when she was eventually found by police on 4th March 2014, following reports of the attack. A post-mortem examination concluded she died as a direct consequence of her injuries, which consisted of multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma to her head and body. Miss Shourefi’s sister said in a statement that ‘justice’ has finally been done for the family, following Manaa’s guilty verdict. “Sara was my sister and my best friend and she has been cruelly taken from me by Thahi’s selfish and violent actions. I just want to know why he did it, if he no longer wanted to be with my beautiful sister, why did he just not leave, instead of brutally attacking and killing her? “I am still in deep shock about what has happened to Sara. She was such a lovely natured person, gentle and kind, she did everything Thahi asked of her but he treated her so badly, thinking of the

suffering she must have gone through at his hands, it breaks my heart. “I feel angry and very sad that Thahi has deprived me of my sister and four little children of their mother. “Sara lived for her children, they are what kept her strong and able to suffer the violence Thahi inflicted on her. “They are now without their

mother, confused and upset, which makes me incredibly sad and I worry for them, it is such an injustice for them...I am pleased that Thahi has not managed to trick anyone, not only will he be punished by God but he will spend a very long time in prison.” Manaa previously entered a guilty plea to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished

responsibility yet this was rejected. Instead, both South Yorkshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service insisted on presenting all of the evidence gathered, to be heard together with the various psychiatric reports. He is now due to be sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on Monday 9th February. DCI Zaf Ali, the Senior Investigating Officer leading the case said: “This was a horrific and brutal attack on a woman that has left four young children without their mother and a family completely destroyed. “My thoughts and condolences are with her sister and extended family at this time, and I hope they have some form of closure with the verdict today. “Until the tragic day of her death, Sara was kept isolated by Manaa and suffered serious domestic abuse at his hands in silence, believing it was not culturally right to speak to the police or medical professionals against her husband. “I would like to strongly encourage any man or woman, from any background, culture or religion, to please report any form of domestic abuse, whether mentally or physically, to the police. “Domestic Abuse is a crime that should not just be accepted as the norm and the victims should not have to suffer in silence.”

CHALLENGE: A group of volunteers who completed the run last year will be returning to do it again for Islamic Relief’s Warm Winter appeal

Warm Winter Run Walk, run

or cycle for those in need

A Halifax man is taking his own fundraising challenge to the next level this year as he completes a testing run from his hometown to Bradford with 30kg on his back, and he wants you to join him. 31-year-old Arfan Mir organised a similar event last year which saw dozens of people come together to run the 10km distance in aid of the Islamic Relief charity. On Sunday 22nd February, the event returns for a second time, and with attendance expected to improve majorly

this year, the fundraising total of 2014, £5,000, is hoped to be exceeded. Participants are invited to run, walk or cycle the distance, with no entry fee required. Instead, people are asked to raise what they can prior to the event and donate either on the day or following the race completion. Mr Mir, who is a business owner by day, explained why he wanted to stage the event again this month, and how it would be one which all ages and abilities can take part in. “Following last year’s run, we were always going to do this event again and it’s great to welcome cyclists to join us this time around as well,” he said. “The more people who do the challenge, the more money we will hopefully raise for Islamic Relief’s Warm Winter appeal. “Last year my granddad even completed the run and he is in his seventies so that shows this event is really inclusive for everyone.” Explaining more about the cause, he added: “To think there are children in some of the most deprived areas of the world, running around outside without any shoes on in the cold, puts it all into perspective. “We complain when it is a bit cold out and have to do a run to the car, but this run will be helping those who really need help this winter.” The event begins at 10am in Halifax Town Centre – opposite Boots, with the finish line marked in Bradford’s Centenary Square. If you would like to sign up to the race, or just find out more information, please contact Islamic Relief or Arfan directly on 07772 502 543.

DETERMINED: Arfan Mir has organised the event for a second year and hopes to make it an annual occurrence

Free WiFi brings enter-TRAIN-ment to the tracks Rail passengers to access internet on the go

Leeds and Bradford commuters, travelling on some of their cities’ electric trains, can now access super-fast, free WiFi while onboard, after a large investment from local authorities. After a £750,000 investment was made into Northern Rail trains, the

company joined up with Leeds and Bradford Councils, and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, to create the easy access internet for all. It is the first WiFi installation of its kind for the train operators and is the only ‘on-train WiFi scheme’

FREE: WiFi can be accessed at no cost on Northern Rail trains in Leeds and Bradford

being funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The WiFi is available on Northern’s electric trains, which operate between Leeds and Skipton, as well as Ilkley and Bradford Forster Square. Rob Warnes, Planning and Programmes Director for Northern, is delighted the new system is proving popular with customers. “We’ve seen a great take up in the on-board WiFi, registering over 100,000 users so far and customers have been telling us they love the speed as well as the content,” he said. With connectivity going live this month, rail users will have access to 20MB of free WiFi as well as unlimited entertainment courtesy of content provider Spoken Ink. Users can also access a range of high-quality media content, including top Sky NOW TV shows, bestselling audiobooks from Audible, games, music, and local and national news – all ready to stream to devices for free. Cllr James Lewis commenting on behalf of the local councils, added: “The SuperConnected Cities programme aims to give access to the latest broadband technologies to everyone – businesses, residents and visitors – across the two cities. “Introducing free WiFi on-board Northern’s electric trains between Leeds and Bradford is opening up even more opportunities to rail users on the go.”

Mullaco Supermarket, based in Dewsbury, not only had the best display of all the retailers in the country but also went a step further by having a ‘Love Biryani Day’ – with expert cookery demonstrations instore, free freshly cooked Biryani for people to try and recipe cards to take away. Ahmed Mulla, managing director at

Mullaco Supermarket, said: “It’s a great honour to be recognised for the best display in the country for the Daawat rice re-launch. “It was all down to the hard work of the staff here so hopefully we’ll be using this cheque to treat everyone with a nice meal. “I’m looking forward to doing more fun events and dazzling displays for our customers. Social Enterprise proposals

Ground-breaking proposals that would see a new social enterprise set up to support people with learning disabilities will be discussed by senior councillors next week. Leeds City Council’s executive board will be updated on plans for the city’s Learning Disability Service to be transferred into the innovative new model. If approved, the plans would see the service, which has an annual budget of £22m and supports more than 1,000 of the city’s vulnerable adults, become owned and operated by staff. While people using the service would still be supported by the same staff in the same buildings, the social enterprise would work for the community, with any surplus money generated used to either improve existing services or for the benefit of the local area.

‘Near-impossible’ budget restrictions

Bradford Libraries is bringing stories to life with story time sessions across the district over the February half term running between 12th and 25th February. Library staff are using story sacks to help engage children and their parents in the world of book sharing. Using props and role play will add a new dimension to story time and allow children to see books in a whole different light with visual aides that they can touch and feel. The Count Me In sacks have a focus on numbers and will be available to borrow from libraries on an adult ticket. The sacks have three different learning levels. People can call their local library for details.

Killer told he can have ‘no complaints’ Sentence stands after brutal murder of pizza delivery driver A mugger, who killed a pizza delivery driver just one day before he was due to start his dream job, has been told he has to serve at least the 23-year minimum jail term, before parole will even be considered. Kasim Ahmed was jailed last year after launching a frenzied knife attack on Thavisha Peiris in Sheffield in October 2013. Mr Peiris was working his last shift before starting his new job as an IT consultant when he was approached in his car by 18year-old Ahmed and bled to death after the attack. Ahmed was ordered to serve at least 23 years behind bars for the murder, yet challenged this ruling last week at London’s Criminal Appeal Court. His lawyers argued that the sentence was ‘too long’, as the crown court judge hadn’t taken the teen’s troubled background into account, and was wrong to

UPHELD: Thavisha Peiris (right) was killed by Kasim Ahmed in 2013 during his final shift as a delivery driver

find the case was ‘highly serious’. Despite the appeal, the calls were thrown out almost immediately by three of the country’s most senior judges, who labelled the sentence length as ‘appropriate’. Lord Justice Jackson, said the judgement was correct and the sentence handed out did not appear to be excessive. “What happened was that Ahmed committed a murder by a series of brutal stabbings during an attempted robbery,” he said. “It is sadly the case that defendants in many criminal

matters have been brought up in dysfunctional homes and come from troubled families and there are occasions when the courts can take that into account in order to reduce their sentence. “In this case, however, the judge took the view that, because of the gravity of the offending, it was not possible to make any reduction for personal mitigation. “This murder, which was committed with an intention to kill, was so serious that a reduction of the minimum term below 23 years would not have been appropriate.”

Little Germany boost

Bradford Council’s Executive is being asked to approve proposed changes to planning rules to breathe new life back into a historic section of the city. Planning officers have been working with English Heritage and the local group Little Germany Action to introduce a new way of simplifying planning rules to reduce bureaucracy and cut costs. Bradford Council is planning to introduce a Local Development Order (LDO) and a Local Listed Building Consent Order (LLBCO) into Little Germany and the Cathedral Area. Reports to the Executive, which meets on Tuesday 10th February, at City Hall, says the orders will apply to specific buildings within Little Germany and the Cathedral Precinct Conservation Area. Councillors will be asked to give permission for a consultation with building owners and other stakeholders about bringing in the orders. Asian

Kids fly high this half-term

Children are being offered the chance to have fun and use their imaginations to create giant bird sculptures this half term, 12pm to 3.30pm on 19th February, at Dewsbury Museum, Heckmondwike Road. The activities are free for children aged five to 14 years old, no booking is required and families can drop in at any point during the afternoon session. Materials will be provided, so those attending can design and decorate their own big bird. Youngsters can let their creativity run wild and make their sculptures realistic or create a totally new species of bird from their imagination.

Design students from Sheffield Hallam University held a ‘solution-based, threedimensional’ exhibition at Bank Street Arts last week, showcasing their innovative work in collaboration with a range of industry experts. More than 30 students from the university’s interior design degree course spent three months dealing with professionals from several sectors to create an amazing interactive exhibition. After hearing of problems that professionals from social media and technology backgrounds, charitable organisations, the heritage and cultural industries and literature, all deal with, the academics then produced 12 threedimensional installations. All the pieces of art were designed in ways to find innovative solutions to a range of issues outlined by the professionals, and showed the general public what it was like looking at things with different visual impairments. Interior design course leader, Sally Billau, said: “Working alongside industry professionals like this, we’ve challenged our students to apply their design knowledge in a creative yet practical way, and using a range of design and fabrication techniques.” The students have worked with Stoney Middleton Heritage Centre Community Group, the Royal Society for the Blind and Silence Breaker Media, among others. The resulting exhibition, entitled ‘Prism’ was showcased at Bank Street Arts last month and was organised, curated and installed completely by students.

Local WANTED: The two men pictured are wanted by police after an attempted robbery at a home in Pudsey in December

Appeal to unmask would-be robbers

West Yorkshire Police have released CCTV footage of two men they want to identify after a homeowner was attacked in an attempted robbery at his residence in Pudsey. The 48-year-old victim received cuts and bruises when he was assaulted in the incident at the property off Tyersal Road at about 10pm on Tuesday 16th December last year. Three masked men armed with metal bars had approached the address and smashed their way in. They made demands for money before hitting the victim on the head and arms. The man's wife was threatened but managed to escape from the building and call the police, resulting in the three suspects escaping emptyhanded, droving off in a vehicle

they had parked nearby. Detective Constable Lisa Watts, of Leeds District CID, said: “This was a terrifying experience for this couple to be confronted by these masked armed men and threatened and attacked in their own home. “We are continuing to conduct enquiries into this offence and would like to hear from anyone who has any information that could assist the investigation. “While the men had their faces covered, one suspect's balaclava does not cover the upper part of his face and together with his build and clothing we are hoping someone may recognise him.” Anyone with any information is asked to contact DC Watts at Elland Road via 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Card fraudsters still targeting Asian families Police in Bradford and Kirklees have issued a further warning to residents to not give out bank details over the phone following a telephone scam which has resulted in the theft of several bank cards. Around a dozen calls have been made to West Yorkshire Police since the start of December, reporting concerns about incoming phone calls purportedly from police officers. The caller has claimed that the person's bank card has been used fraudulently and then asked for details including the PIN number in order to 'investigate the crime'. Where people have provided these details this has then been followed up by a visit from a 'courier' to collect the bank card with money then withdrawn from the account. Detective Inspector Stef Wiseman, of Kirklees CID, said this is not the way police operate and urged any persons who hear of such calls to contact 101. “We would never ask you to give out financial information over the phone and even if there was a requirement for you to be issued with a new card, neither the police or your bank or building society would ask you to hand over your old card,” DI Wiseman said. “It is quite possible that other people have also received similar calls and either realised it is a scam and

CRIME: Around a dozen victims have so far reported the card scammers to police

hung up or not realised up until now that a crime has been committed. We would urge these people to get in touch to help us in building up a picture of the scale of this issue and also to ensure that any offences are appropriately investigated. “The victims so far have predominantly been Asian families with the caller having details such as their name and address before they make contact. We would therefore urge people, particularly those living in Asian communities, to make others

aware of this scam and what to do if they receive such a call.” Anyone who has already received a call of this nature is asked to call Kirklees CID on 101 with details. Anyone receiving a new call is asked to immediately dial 1471 afterwards to check whether there is any incoming call data and then also report the call to the police. Two people have been arrested in connection with the investigation in to this series of offences and released on bail.

Drivers request bus lane access A group of taxi drivers from across Leeds gathered in the city centre last week to hand over a 1,000-strong petition, requesting the right for private hire vehicles (PHVs) to enter bus lanes. Current regulations mean only hackney carriage taxis are able to enter the lanes alongside the city’s buses, leaving more than 5,000 drivers with no other option but to take ‘the long way around’. In comparison, the 537 hackney carriages, which operate in the city, are all granted access. Mohammed Sajaad has been a PHV driver for the past nine years and spearheaded the petition over the past six months, with help from SJK Cars. In total, 946 signatures were gathered from fellow drivers, and a further 94 from the general public, to make a total of 1,040. Finally handing the documents over to the council on Tuesday 28th January, Mr Sajaad said it felt like a burden had been lifted and hoped his ‘balanced argument’ would be seriously considered. “It has taken a very long time to collect all the signatures required for this petition so to have finally handed it over is very satisfying,” he said. “In truth, we were disappointed that no official from Leeds City Council was able to receive the petition directly on the day as we had arranged the details previously. “Nevertheless, I am still hopeful

HAND-OVER: Drivers gathered in Leeds last week to formally hand over the petition at the Civic Hall

1,000 strong petition handed to Leeds City Council and all we can do now is wait for a formal response.” He added: “The arguments put across in the petition are all fact checked and represent the majority of Leeds’ drivers who just want to get passengers to their destination as soon as possible. “We have even offered counter-

arguments in the petition, on behalf of the other parties, and explained how we would help settle any worries.” The rules and regulations surrounding PHVs and their access to bus lanes is different in every city, with councils such as Bristol, Liverpool and Hull allowing such

drivers in the lanes. Adal Ali, a minicab driver in Leeds for the past 18 years, has seen a number of new rules introduced whilst on the roads and said he hoped the city’s authority would seriously consider the proposals. “We provide a public service to people who want get from a-to-b as

quickly as possible,” he said. “The bus lanes prove a huge problem for us. Last week for example, a driver received a ticket for being half-an-inch inside a bus lane, which is just ridiculous. “There are between five and sixhundred hackney carriage vehicles in Leeds and so many more PHVs, so why are we not all allowed in the bus lanes?” John Askam, of the Leeds Private Hire Drivers Association, was also present at the handing over of the petition. He said not enough is being done to help PHV drivers at the moment. “Every new piece of legislation passed seems to always have a negative effect on private hire drivers,” he said. “They are never introducing rules to help us.” A spokesman for the Leeds City Council said: “The Leeds bus network carries nearly 80 million passengers annually and bus priority measures provide valuable time savings and service reliability across the city. “The possibility of allowing private hire vehicles to use bus lanes has been previously investigated by the council. “It was considered however, that to take such a decision with over 4,000 private hire vehicles registered in Leeds would have a significant detrimental impact on bus reliability and make the bus lanes more intimidating for cyclists.”

A budding fashion designer from a University in Leeds saw her first industrystandard garment design go on show this past week as a special exhibition was held in the city. 20-year-old Sehar Hussain, was joined by other creative designers when ‘The Shirt’ public exhibition opened on Thursday 29th January, at the reception of Leeds Beckett University’s City Campus’ Broadcasting Place. Running until Friday 6th February, the exhibition displays pieces of work from a number of undergraduate students, enrolled on the Ba (Hons) Fashion course. Working off a simple brief - to create a white shirt that contains a two-piece collar, pockets, plackets, a yoke, sleeves, cuffs and tucks – the designers were then given creative freedom to put their own ‘personality’ and ‘spin’ on the shirt. Sehar, who hopes to work with a design house in the future, and eventually run her own fashion label, explained more about her own final product. “My design consisted of two layers, an undergarment which was a fitted bodice, and a top layer which was loose fitting - a Two-p two-piece,” she said. “The batwing style sleeves have been left

open at the armhole and are closed at the cuffs. “I chose to have a normal button stand for the undergarment and a concealed placket for the top layer in order to give the shirt a simple finish to go with the batwing sleeves.” The promising designer said she had thoroughly enjoyed her time on the course so far and praised the university for its ‘industry experience’. “The best thing about the course is that it covers various aspects of fashion, including hand designing, pattern cutting, construction and computer aided design,” she added. “What’s more, the tutors have first-hand industry experience.” Course Leader, Katie Lenton, has overseen the exhibition and explained more of what visitors can expect when attending the show. She said: “The exhibition is a reflection of the creativity and individuality of our students, who have all fully embraced the concept of the project. “They have each designed and produced an original white shirt, all of which have been finished to an industry standard and everyone is welcome to celebrate with us at the special exhibition.” The Ba (Hons) Fashion course was launched at Leeds Beckett University in September 2014.

Tropical Ices The Dessert People I

n 1987, Abdulkadar first formulated the concept of Tropical Ices in his two-bedroom terrace house in Bradford, when he envisioned the concept of bringing the world’s favourite ice creams to the UK. Fast forward more than 25 years to the present day, and there may have been many changes in the company, but the passion behind every product on the now 200plus menu remains the same. The founder’s legacy also continues to run at the heart of operations, through his son, Sahil Tai, and son in-law, Murad Tai, who now head the business, helping to take their father’s vision to new heights across the UK. From buffet ice creams to premium options, smooth gelato tastes to irresistible cakes and their renowned ‘back-to-school’ puddings, Tropical Ices has exceeded all expectations in its 28-year history. Operations Manager, Murad Tai, explained how the business had achieved such longevity by continuing to experiment with new flavours, and what his favourite aspect of the dessert industry was. “Ultimately what makes me so passionate about my job, and what has helped us become successful in the industry, is that we only put products out there that we love, and know someone else is going to love too,” he said. “With a love like that who wouldn't want to indulge?” Tropical Ices may have countless offerings of desserts, yet it is perhaps their Italian gelato and prestige range that has gained most of the acclaim in recent months. Rich and luscious in nature with extraordinary inclusions, the desserts are available in endless varieties from cookies and cream to candy floss, with each flavour as creamy as the next. Amazing textures and scrumptious swirls are not just a treat for the taste buds but are a visual delight as well, making them the ultimate temptation for any dessert parlour. Sales and Marketing Manager, Sahil Tai, added: “We constantly add new, innovative flavours to our range, as we strive to achieve our goal of producing something to love for every customer. “By understanding the changing needs of each client, and ensuring our full commitment towards implementing quality and service, we have introduced over 100 crazy, crunchy and yummy variants for dessert lovers.” If you would like your business to get the ‘sweetest feeling’ this year, contact Tropical Ices today and see how they can help you with all your dessert needs.

Lifting the Cape T

he Court have for the first time ruled that a parent company owes a duty of care to its subsidiary employees. In legal terms, a company is a separate legal entity, separate from its shareholders and directors, with a legal personality capable of having legal rights and duties and is able to sue, and be sued. When there is a group of companies a subsidiary is a distinct legal entity separate from its parent company. Therefore neither the parent company nor its directors can usually be held liable for the acts of its subsidiaries. The principle of a separate legal entity can be overlooked in circumstances such as in fraud or cases of illegality, which is known as ‘lifting the corporate veil’. The corporate veil was arguably lifted to hold a parent company liable for the health and safety of its subsidiary employees in the case of Chandler –vCape plc . The Claimant, Mr David Chandler, was exposed to substantial amounts of asbestos dust during his employment with Cape Building Products Limited (“CBPL”). Fifty years later Mr Chandler was diagnosed with asbestosis and brought a claim for negligence against the parent company Cape plc. Mr Chandler did not bring a claim against CBPL as their insurance policy excluded claims of this type. The Court of Appeal found that Cape plc had superior knowledge to CBPL about the health risks and management of asbestos and they were also “fully aware of the systemic failure to control the release of asbestos at CBPL”. Cape plc ought to have foreseen that CBPL

would rely on its superior knowledge and they had sufficient control over CBPL in other aspects of the business, so should owe a duty of care in relation to health and safety. The Court of Appeal gave general guidance where a parent company could assume a duty of care for its subsidiaries’ employees; 1. Where the businesses of the parent and subsidiary are in a relevant respect the same; 2. The parent has, or ought to have, superior knowledge on some relevant aspect of health and safety in the particular industry; 3.The subsidiary's system of work is unsafe as the parent company knew, or ought to have known; and 4.The parent knew or ought to have foreseen that the subsidiary or its employees would rely on its using that superior knowledge for the employees' protection. It is not necessary to show that the parent is in the practice of intervening in the health and safety policies of the subsidiary. Although the Court have stressed that a duty of care from the parent company to an employee of one of its subsidiaries does not arise automatically, the outcome of this decision poses a real risk to parent companies in a group of companies with financial and reputational implications. It may therefore be prudent for parent companies to review their insurance policies to ensure cover for liabilities that may arise from acts of the parent company itself or from their subsidiaries. We at Blacks can advise on all aspects of health and safety and negligence claims.

O

ver the past 30 years, Leeds’ JR Autobodies has been providing MOTs and bodywork repairs for drivers across the region, growing into one of the country’s most renowned independent garages. It was in 1982 that brothers, Ajmare Riyat and Jasmer Riyat, first set up the business alongside their father after realising a need to provide quality MOT services in Leeds. Starting life in humble beginnings, the business began operating out of a ‘shacklike’ building, just big enough to fit one car – a complete contrast of operations now. Today, the business is booming, with JR Autobodies growing into

Yorkshire’s largest independent body shop and MOT Centre, boasting a huge 11,000sq ft workshop space. Although the brother’s father sadly passed away over two decades ago, his legacy continues through the business’ longevity, with Jasmer, and his nephew, Randeep (known by all as ‘Panda’), running the company with the same passion as it has been from day one. The onsite MOT point has been classed as green light, a standard mostly only achieved by leading main dealer workshops. Meanwhile, a team of engineers and mechanics can provide any bodywork refinish job needed, with the highest quality re-sprays

and vehicle jigging services available at the most competitive prices. Whether its refinishing your paintwork back to the new factory finish or making your car stand out from the crowd, with limitless custom designs and colours it’s all possible at JR Autobodies. All work is guaranteed to bring your car back to the original factory finish which very few can achieve. For all insurance work booked in, a free courtesy car is provided by the garage when required to ensure minimum disruption to your daily routine. Likewise, if an accident is not your fault, a like for like vehicle will also be provided for the duration of your repair.

Britain ‘needs to do more’

ACTION: Defence Committee chairman, Rory Stewart, has said more needs to be done by Britain in the fight against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq

Fight against IS requires greater contribution from Britain

British lawmakers have this week said that the fight against the Islamic State (IS) may be one which aims to contain the threat, rather than defeat it, calling on Britain to play a greater role in the conflicts in Syria and Iraq. Britain has yet to take part in any air strikes in Syria, only joining the US-led strikes against IS groups in Iraq – something the parliament defence committee has described as ‘strikingly modest’. In a report released last week, the committee said: “There is a significant gap between the rhetoric of Britain and its partners, and the reality of the campaign on the ground ... It will be very difficult to destroy DAESH. “Given the deep polarisation and structural weaknesses of the Iraqi state, we wonder whether containment and suppression of DAESH would not be a more realistic goal than total elimination.” DAESH is a separate acronym for the IS group which is thought to have been derived as an acronym of the terrorists original Arabic name. It is also conceived to have many negative undertones and to be disliked by the militants. DAESH, or IS, is a breakaway al Qaeda group that declared an Islamic caliphate across parts of Syria and Iraq last summer so far killing thousands in what the United Nations has called a reign of terror. Britain’s defence committee added this week that they were ‘deeply concerned’ about the lack of action taken against the group. The Iraqi security forces were

described as ‘weak’ and ‘lacking resources’ in the report, with the nation’s communities divided and regional powers still highly suspicious of each other.

“There are dozens of things the UK could be doing ... to work with coalition partners to help address one of the most extreme threats that we have faced in the last twenty years.” The committee said that it was not calling for combat troops to be deployed, a move the government has already ruled out, but said Britain should meet a request from the Iraqi army to provide training to counter Improvised Explosive Devices and also help with mission planning and tactics. It also criticised ministers and military chiefs for failing to provide a clear idea of Britain's objectives or strategy in Iraq and called on the government to

Stewart, a lawmaker from Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative Party, said: “We must clearly acknowledge the previous failures in Iraq, and reform our approach. But that does not mean lurching to doing nothing. “There are dozens of things the UK could be doing ... to work with coalition partners to help address one of the most extreme threats that we have faced in the last twenty years.”

DONATION: A giant cheque is handed over on behalf of AMYA to the British Heart Foundation, for more than £16,000

February 2015 - 1st Edition

£340,000 raised for charity Forty-five giant cheques were presented to UK based charities at the Houses of Parliament last month, concluding a long and successful year of fundraising for a popular Muslim group. Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) visited the home of British Politics alongside their charity partners and honoured dignitaries as £340,000 was presented to a number of causes. The figure brings the total funds raised by AMYA for UK charities to £1.5million, with those benefitting from this year’s donations including: the Royal British Legion, Barnardo's and NSPCC. The majority of these funds have been raised through the group’s annual flagship charity event called the 'Mercy For Mankind' Charity Challenge. Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, who welcomed the group to Parliament, praised the group for their efforts and playing an ‘integral role in society’. He said: “The Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association is reflective of exactly the kind of contribution that many groups make, of different faiths, of different communities, who do the right thing. “They do not see that there is a division between society but also recognise that their role in society is to contribute to the society of which they are an integral part. “In doing so they make it an

Generous Muslims hand out funds to national causes infinitely better society and the efforts of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association in this respect are there for all to see.” Secretary of State for International Development, Justine Greening, was also in attendance at the event and added: “It goes beyond just raising money, I think what the youth association has really done is to be part of us responding to crisis when they hit.

“I'll never forget the discussion around young people in the Ahmadiyya Community going as far afield as down to Devon to help people affected by the floods and closer to home in Surrey. “Helping people, just being part of that response to those crises, I think, told me a lot about just how much of a fantastic group of people they are and I think that is why it gives us so much hope as we look to the future.”

More than heartburn Consultant urges Brits to ‘Be Clear on Cancer’

A leading consultant at the University College London Hospitals is urging people from South Asian backgrounds to never ignore ‘recurring heartburn’ and visit their doctors immediately. Professor Muntzer Mughal, a consultant surgeon and head of upper GI services at the teaching hospital, is backing the ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign, launched across the UK. The initiative insists people, who have had heartburn most days for three weeks or more, to visit their doctors, as this can be a sign of oesophageal or stomach cancer. The campaign launch coincides with results of a new survey commissioned by Public Health England, which reveals only one in two people (55 per cent) would visit their doctor if they had heartburn most days for three weeks or more. Professor Mughal says that due to having a diet consisting of many hot foods, heartburn may be a regular occurrence in south Asian communities, yet if it is a persistent pain, they should certainly contact their doctor. “In South Asian culture we’re accustomed to eating spicy food which can sometimes cause heartburn and as a result we may ignore symptoms thinking it isn’t serious,” he said. “The campaign message is clear - you

should go and see your doctor if you have heartburn most days for three weeks or more, as it could be a sign of cancer. “You won’t be wasting the doctor’s time – you will either get reassurance that it isn’t cancer, or if it is, you will have a better chance of successful treatment.” Early diagnosis of oesophageal or stomach cancer (also known as oesophago-gastric cancers) is crucial and means treatment is more likely to be successful. Around 67 per cent of people diagnosed with oesophago-gastric cancers at the earliest stage survive for at least five years, whilst this figure drops to around three per cent for those diagnosed later. It has been estimated that around 950 lives could be saved in England each year if our survival rates for oesophagogastric cancers matched the best in Europe. The UK, with the Netherlands, has the joint highest incidence rate of oesophageal cancer in males in the European Union and the highest incidence rate of oesophageal cancer in females in the EU. Of those diagnosed with oesophagogastric cancers, more than nine out of 10 people are over the age of 50, making this the target age group for the campaign.

Anti-Semitic attacks reach record high

The number of anti-Semitic incidents in Britain rose to a record level in 2014, more than double the previous year, due to events in the Middle East involving Israel, a Jewish advisory body said on Thursday. The figures, which Home Secretary (interior minister) Theresa May called ‘deeply concerning’, come amid rising safety fears among Britain's estimated 260,000 Jews following the deadly attack on a Jewish supermarket in Paris by an Islamist gunman last month. The Community Security Trust, which provides security advice to Britain's Jews, said there had been 1,168 anti-Semitic incidents last year, a 25 percent increase on the previous record high recorded in 2009. The CST, which began monitoring antiSemitic incidents in 1984, said the major reason for the rise was fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinians in Gaza which began in July, and led to a record monthly figure.

‘No tears shed’ if UK exit EU

British government minister, Sajid Javid, tipped as a potential successor to Prime Minister David Cameron, said on Thursday he wouldn't shed a tear if Britain left the European Union. Cameron has promised to renegotiate Britain's ties with the bloc before holding a membership referendum in 2017, if his party wins what is set to be a closelyfought national election on 7th May. Asked at a lunch for reporters if he would shed a tear if Britain left the EU, Culture Secretary Javid said: “The most important thing is the British people are given a choice ... would I shed a tear? No.” Changes sought by Cameron, who has said he favours remaining in a reformed EU but will rule nothing out if his negotiations are unsuccessful, include further curbing EU migrants' access to Britain's welfare system and reducing business regulation.

Mother-to-be fraudster finally jailed

Case closed after five year search CAPTURED: Agne Khan had been on the run for five years before she was finally detained following a major fraud project

February 2015 - 1st Edition

A pregnant woman who was part of a criminal gang that defrauded high street banks out of almost £8 million and then spent five years on the run has finally been jailed. Agne Khan, from Birmingham, was sentenced to 30 months in prison at Southwark Crown Court for her role in a major mortgage fraud, uncovered by the City of London Police back in 2009. The other five members of the gang – Mohammed Younas, brothers Imran and Nadeem Mirza, Farhan Khan and Khawar Khan - were jailed in 2010 and 2012 but the 30 year-old female fraudster avoided detection until being arrested at Birmingham Airport in September 2014, having just got off a flight from Lithuania. A couple of months later she pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess false identity documents, conspiracy to commit fraud by false representation and conspiracy to possess articles for use in fraud. Agne Khan, who is married to Khawar Khan and is due to give birth in a couple of months, was a key player in the criminal network that stole £7.8 million from banks over a six month period in 2008. Fraudulent solicitors were used to submit 33 bogus mortgage applications on properties across South East England that the gang did not own and had no intention of buying. After approving the

applications the mortgage funds were transferred by the lenders into a single bank account controlled by the criminal gang, who then swiftly moved the millions into 68 separate accounts they had opened using false identities. In March 2009 one of the banks contacted the City of London Police, which is the National Policing Lead for Fraud, and a few months later detectives moved in and arrested all of the gang apart from Agne Khan, who escaped detection and fled the country. A European Arrest Warrant was put out in her name which was still outstanding when she tried to re-enter the UK last autumn. Khan was then detained at the airport before being arrested, charged and held in custody. City of London Police Detective Sergeant Simon Russen, who led the long running investigation, said: “After five years on the run Agne Khan may have thought the City of London Police had long forgotten about her. Unfortunately for her we never close the file on a case until we are certain we have done all we can to ensure justice has been served in full". “She is now the sixth and final member of this gang who has been put behind bars as a result of what was a highly complex investigation into a type of scam that was particularly prevalent in the first decade of the 21st century.”

Benefits cap “I don't think a family should be able to get more in benefits than someone going out to work,” says the Prime Minister David Cameron has said that his party’s plans for a fresh squeeze on benefits if he regains power at the general election in May are a ‘basic issue of fairness’. The Prime Minister has indicated that he would act "within the first few days" of forming a new government to reduce the annual benefits cap introduced by the Coalition from £26,000 to £23,000. He said the savings generated would provide another £135 million towards funding three million apprenticeships by 2020. With 100 days until polling on 7th May, Mr Cameron rejected claims that the new cap would plunge more families into poverty, saying members of the public had repeatedly complained that it had been set too high. "This is a basic issue of fairness. I don't think a family should be able to get more in benefits than someone going out to work, working every day, and trying to do the right thing for them and their family," he told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme.

"One of the criticisms of the cap set at £26,000, which I have heard all over the country, is that the cap was set too high. We're responding to that. "We're generating these jobs. People listening to this programme don't pay their taxes to sustain people on welfare who could work." He confirmed that regulations to tighten the limit - which are expected to mean an additional 40,000 households seeing a reduction in state help - would be among the first priorities of a Conservative administration. The maximum loss - on top of the effects of the existing cap - would be £60 a week, with an average weekly loss of around £40 or £25 for those newly capped. Another £120 million would come from removing housing benefit from 18 to 21-year-olds on Jobseeker's Allowance. The rest of the £300 million-plus cost of the scheme - around £75 million - is expected to come from "benefit savings as young people move into work more quickly", the Tories said.

‘Barbaric’ burning of Jordanian pilot World condemns actions of IS group following latest attack Jordan’s leaders have promised to deliver an ‘earth-shaking’ response after a video emerged online apparently showing a Jordanian pilot being burnt alive in a cage by Islamic State terrorists. “The revenge will be as big as the calamity that has hit Jordan,” army spokesman Colonel Mamdouh al Ameri said in a televised statement confirming the death of Moaz Al-Kaseasbeh, who was seized by Islamic State in December, following a plane crash. It had been hoped by Jordanian officials that some sort of trade deal could be made with two prisoners, Sajida al-Rishawi and Ziad al-Karbouli, given back to the IS group in exchange for the pilot. However, after talks failed to progress, and following Kaseasbeh’s horrific death, Jordan confirmed the execution of the two prisoners within hours of the footage being released. Al-Rishawi had been on death row for her role in a triple hotel bombing in the Jordanian capital Amman in 2005 that killed dozens, whilst al-Karbouli was linked to al-Qaeda. Jordan’s King Abdullah, said it was important that the nation ‘stuck together’ at this difficult time.

“Today we stand shoulder to shoulder with the family of the martyr hero Moaz, with our people and our armed forces in this tragedy,” he said. “At these difficult times it is every Jordanian's duty to stand together in the face of crises and ordeals, which will only make us stronger.” Following the killing, world leaders also condemned the actions. “It's just one more indication of the viciousness and barbarity of this organization,” US President Barack Obama said prior to meeting Jordan's King Abdullah in the Oval Office. “I think it will redouble the vigilance and determination on the part of the global coalition to make sure that they are degraded and ultimately defeated. “Lieutenant Al-Kaseasbeh's dedication, courage and service to his country and family represent universal human values that stand in opposition to the cowardice and depravity of ISIL, which has been so broadly rejected around the globe.” In the Islamic State video, Kasaesbeh is interviewed, describing the mission he was due to carry out before his jet crashed. The video also showed footage of the aftermath of air strikes, with people trying to remove civilians

$1m to win the cup

Sri Lanka’s national cricket squad have been given some extra incentive to go out and win the 50-over world cup, with a giant bonus up for grabs, if victorious. Members of the playing team will receive almost $1million from their national Government if they win the upcoming tournament in Australia and New Zealand that starts next week. Government spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said on Thursday that the new cabinet had agreed to pay

130 million rupees ($983,359) to the players if they lift the trophy. The island nation won the World Cup in 1996 and finished runners-up at the last two editions. They are now being asked to relive the magic of ’96 and put the country back at the top of cricket’s international stage. Sri Lanka have been drawn in Pool A alongside the two co-hosts, England, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Scotland. They lost the finals in 2007 and 2011 to Australia and India respectively.

MERS outbreak

KILLED: The Jordanian pilot, Moaz Al-Kaseasbeh, was set ablaze last week by Islamic State terrorists

from debris. A man resembling Kasaesbeh is then shown inside the cage with his clothes dampened, apparently with flammable liquid, and one of the masked fighters holds a torch, setting alight a line of fuel which leads into the cage. Fighters then pour debris, including broken masonry, over the cage which a bulldozer subsequently flattens, with the body still inside. The video shows a desert setting similar to previous videos of killings.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday it remained worried about the spread of MERS, a respiratory disease that has infected and killed hundreds of people, overwhelmingly in Saudi Arabia. In an update issued after a meeting of its emergency committee on Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, the United Nations health agency said more must be done to track the virus, which is known to have infected at least 965 people, of whom some 357 have died. “Although the pattern of

transmission appears relatively unchanged, the overall situation and the possibility of international spread remain of concern,” the WHO said. “Increased surveillance in many countries is needed to better monitor trends related to the spread of this virus.” There is no cure or vaccine for MERS, which kills around 40 percent of its victims. The virus causes coughing, fever and breathing problems, and can lead to pneumonia and kidney failure.

Plane careens into river following take-off

CRASHED: A TransAsia Airways plane crashed in Taiwan last week, killing 15 passengers after its wing collided with a bridge

Engine failure forces Taiwan aircraft into crash-landing

Twenty-three people have been killed, and 20 more are missing, after a plane crash-landed in a river in Taiwan after its wing clipped a bridge. Miraculously 15 people also survived the ordeal which was caught on video via an amateur dashboard camera from a passing motorist. In the footage, the TransAsia Airways aircraft is seen hitting the top of a taxi before its wing collides with the bridge, causing the plane to land upside down in shallow water beneath. last commThe unication from one of the aircraft's pilots was Mayday ‘Mayday flameout’, engine according to an air traffic control recording on liveatc.net. A flameout occurs when the fuel supply to engine is the interrupted or when is faulty there combustion, resulting in an engine failure. Twinaircraft, engined however, are usually able to keep flying even when one engine has failed. Television footage following the crash showed some survivors wearing life jackets wading and swimming clear of wreckage whilst others, including a young child, were taken to shore in inflatable boats. Emergency rescue officials crowded

around the partially submerged fuselage of flight GE235, lying on its side in the river, trying to help the others still on board. The plane missed apartment buildings by metres, though it was not clear if that was luck or whether the pilot was aiming for the river. Footage showed a van skidding to a halt on the damaged overpass after barely missing the plane's wing, with small pieces of the aircraft scattered along the road. The chief executive of TransAsia,

Peter Chen, bowed deeply at a televised news conference as he apologised to passengers and crew. TransAsia's shares closed down 6.9 percent in heavy trade, its biggest percentage decline since late 2011. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said his government had offered Taiwan any help necessary following the crash.

King’s abandoned birds need freedom

CARE: Gyanendra was the last King of Nepal and owned hundreds of pheasants at a lodge at his former palace

Tel: 01274 786550 29-31 Lilycroft Road • Bradford • BD9 5AD

Almost seven years after the last king of Nepal was deposed, hundreds of his previouslyowned birds are now reported to be starving on his former grounds. Gyanendra was forced out of his palace in 2008 when the Himalayan nation’s monarchy was abolished, and he now lives in the capital of Kathmandu, as a common citizen. After leaving the esteemed premises, the ruler left behind several hundred pheasants in huge cages at the adjoining lodge as he was not able to take, nor care for them, in his new life. The original number of birds was unclear, but only 163 golden and silver pheasants survive. “They used to feed on cashew nuts during the days of the

monarch,” Kishore Kumar Mehta, a conservation official at the Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park where the lodge is located, said. “But now they don't even get enough corn and wheat to eat.” While Gyanendra's palace has been turned into a museum, the government has allowed him to continue using the lodge, although the former monarch has no authority over the pheasants. The government had earlier set aside more than £11,000 for food, upkeep and two caretakers for the birds, but that allowance was cut to just £4,000 last year. “It is not enough to feed them properly,” said Mehta. “The government should either give us enough budgets or let us free the birds from their cages into the forests.”

CONTROL: Iraq’s Prime Minister, Haider al-Abadi, will be lifting Baghdad’s curfew on Saturday

Curfew lifted Baghdad deemed safe enough to bring back the night

A decade-old curfew, which has seen four of Baghdad’s major neighbourhoods come to a standstill after midnight, is to be lifted this weekend. Iraq’s Prime Minister, Haider al-Abadi, said on Thursday that the country will attempt to normalise the capital once more as the areas are ‘demilitarised’ following 12 years of abiding by the late night law. Since the US-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein in 2003, some sort of curfew has been in place, all but stopping commercial and civilian movement. The

current restrictions, between 12am and 5am, were introduced seven years ago. Deadly attacks may still occur on a regular basis in the nation’s most populous city, with at least 21 people killed in two recent bomb blasts over the past week. However, Abadi's spokesman, Rafid Jaboori, told Reuters that the Prime Minister remains confident that now is the time to give the people back their night. “Baghdad was under real threat only a few months ago, but now Baghdad is secure enough...to lift the night-time curfew,” he said.

“Life goes on although Iraq is at war and is aiming to liberate the rest of the country.” Last year, it seemed Islamic State militants were preparing to attack the capital after making ground in the north and west of Iraq. Yet, after Kurdish and Shi’ite militia pushed back the radical group, the threat was reduced significantly. While much of Iraq remains out of Abadi's direct control, inside the capital he has empowered the police to arrest wayward militia members suspected of kidnapping civilians and has sought to ban armed convoys parading through Baghdad. Last weekend, Abadi ordered that a separate neighbourhood demilitarised after heavily armed gunmen protesting against an alleged kidnapping clashed with security forces.

Formal complaint lodged against Dewani trial judge

A group of academics and lawyers have criticised the judge presiding over the murder trial of British businessman Shrien Dewani amid allegations of bias. A formal complaint has been lodged against Judge Jeanette Traverso's handling of the case last year, in which she dismissed claims the care home tycoon organised the murder of his wife Anni while on their honeymoon in Cape Town in 2010. The Higher Education

Anni when the Swedish-raised engineer was shot dead as the couple toured a rough suburb of Cape Town on 13th November 2010. HETN chairman Lucky Thekisho said: "Article five of the Judicial Code of Ethics requires judges to act honourably not only in the discharge of official duties but to act honourably and in a manner befitting judicial office in a professional manner that enhances the public trust in or respect for the judiciary and the judicial system."

CRITICISED: Judge Jeanette Traverso who presided over the Deewani trial has had an official complaint lodged against her

Transformation Network (HETN) accused Judge Traverso of "gross judicial bias and misconduct". The judge called a halt to the trial in December, two months into the hearing, after an application from Mr Dewani's counsel that the prosecution case was flawed. Mr Dewani, 34, fought a long UK court battle against extradition before being cleared of murdering

Lawyer Mr Thekisho urged South African judicial authorities to suspend Judge Traverso pending an investigation. Anni’s uncle Ashok Hindocha, and one of several members of her family to sit through the trial in Cape Town have voiced that they feel that Anni did not get a fair trial as the casee was not fully heard. There is resentment that the judge didn’t

have Shrien take the stand. Three men - Zola Tongo, Mziwamadoda Qwabe and Xolile Mngeni - already serving jail terms for their role in the killing claimed Mr Dewani arranged a hijackinggone wrong in which he would survive and his wife would be killed. But Judge Traverso ruled their evidence was flawed and the case was thrown out before Mr Dewani could give evidence in the witness box. The trial was riddled with delays while swathes of evidence were dismissed or considered irrelevant to the case. German prostitute Leopold Leisser was lined up to testify about bisexual Mr Dewani's double life, but his court appearance was reduced to little more than a 15minute offering after the judge decided it contributed little to the evidence already submitted as part of Mr Dewani's witness statement. Qwabe struggled to tell the difference between his right and left while another star prosecution witness - self-styled middle man Monde Mbolombo - was granted immunity by the state for testifying against the Briton. Mr Dewani, who had spent eight months undergoing treatment at a hospital on the edge of Cape Town after being extradited to South Africa, was not called to give evidence in his own defence. He returned to England at the conclusion of the case without ever commenting in public. He has always denied any involvement in his wife's murder.

CONTROVERSY: AIB’s now infamous roast has been removed from their YouTube channel raising a dispute over freedom of speech in India

Petition gathers over 30,000 signatures following controversial roast

Regular disputes and arguments in the world of Bollywood are often based around ‘trivial’ things, such as relationships, clothes and advertising deals. Yet when a team of comedians, roasting the entertainment elite had a police complaint registered against them, the very real, and very important topic of ‘freedom of speech’ cropped up in unfamiliar territory. It was in December that the comedian group, known as All India Backchod (or AIB), staged their roast, with the main participants of Ranveer Singh, Karan Johar and Arjun Kapoor. Organised with their permission, the fourpiece comic group then began their controversial act. Despite many plaudits, there were also a number of critics who complained of the language used in the jokes and some of the material. Two of those angered, perhaps a little more than the rest, were Maharashtra's Minister of Cultural Affairs, Vinod Tawde and the President of Brahman Ekta Seva Sanstha, Akhilesh Tiwari – the two people actually trying to get criminal charges against AIB for using ‘vulgar’ language. Tiwari has even gone on record saying: “[The group’s language was] extremely abusive and it is not only ruining the clean image of the Indian culture and women, but is also misleading today's youth.” Thankfully, it seems the majority don’t agree with the two politicians, despite the video now being removed from YouTube. A petition has been launched online, with more than 30,000 signatures gathered in less than three days, in defence of the group. Anushka Sharma was one of the celebrities who were comically targeted by the group, and she said she took it in good humour - the same response she would expect from the majority of others. Speaking at a press conference for her upcoming film, NH10, she said: “Everyone has his or her own way of looking at things and how I looked at it, I felt it was in good humour. It was not meant to be taken so seriously. “This is my opinion. Someone else can have a different opinion and that's the beauty of a democratic setup.” Anushka added that there were more important things happening in India that required the attention of the media, something I’m sure we can all agree with!

‘A Wish’ granted as ‘Kaash’ is released

Bilal Saeed speaks to the Asian Express Thursday 29th January 2015 was a date circled in many people’s calendars as Bilal Saeed’s highly anticipated single, ‘Kaash’, was finally released to fans around the world. After months of waiting, the song proved an instant hit as it climbed into the top ten of the

How long have you been working on the single?

Are you Kidin’ man?

Nawazuddin Siddiqui clarifies on his Hollywood film opposite Nicole There is a price that one has to pay for success, and even the master and passionate actor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who still has his feet firmly on the ground, has to face it. For those of you who are not quite familiar with him, he’s had a subtle climb in the industry and now has some noticeable and acclaimed performances in films tucked under his belt. He’s earnt his respect in films such as ‘Black Friday’ (2004), ‘New York’ (2009), ‘Peepli Live’ (2010), ‘Kahani’ (2012), ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ (2012) and ‘Talaash’ (2012). We were quite shocked when we heard rumours that Nawazuddin’s PR had claimed that he is starring in a film opposite Nicole Kidman and has scenes with her. When we called Nawaz, he was shooting for Kabir Khan’s next project, and promised to get back to us as soon as he was through, and as always he did.

Here is what Nawaz said: “You know me very well. I don’t have a PR as I am here to work and if my director is satisfied, that gives me utmost satisfaction. I don’t know where it came from that I’m doing a Hollywood film opposite Nicole.” Giving us the exclusive details Nawaz told us: “You know I had this very nice mail from Garth Davis, where he asked me to do this one scene/short appearance in his film. If you want I can forward it to you. That is it! And I’m doing it. “I don’t have the gift of the gab, but as my well-wishers had advised I try to talk, give interviews and answer queries. But not while I am shooting, as I have my utmost attention and focus on that. “The only person I talk to is my mother who is sick, not even my brothers or relatives. People have to understand that. It really pains me to read such unsubstantiated stories,” concludes the humble actor.

iTunes chart within hours of release, downloaded by thousands around the world. Catching up with the Asian Express Newspaper, Bilal spoke of how his latest single saw him return to his roots and promised more tracks in the near future.

It’s been almost six months since we started recording the song and obviously we had to go through the process for the visuals as well so it has taken a long time. In order to get the right vibe, I had to come here, to the UK, because the emotion I wanted to put across with the song needed the right scenery for the video. We decided on Scotland which was a really suitable setting and we managed to have a two-day shoot over there.

arrived on the scene. The eight or ten years before that were a struggle for me because I used to work in the studios as a composer and sound engineer, recording other singers and their vocals. After my first song proved a big hit worldwide I was able to gather a fanbase who are always waiting for my songs. Today (29th January), we dropped Kaash to these fans and it is already in top ten in iTunes. I feel very excited about it because I know people have been waiting a long time and I look forward to hearing their views on the song.

How does it feel to finally release Kaash to your fans?

How does Kaash differ from previous tracks?

It’s been four years since I

The majority of my songs recently have been like dance music, with fun lyrics, but the first song which I initially started with, and what earned me my reputation, was actually an emotional one. My fans started following me from that first song and I think they’ve been missing that deep vibe. That is how this song is different to what I’ve been producing for the last two years or so. With Kaash, you can just sit back and listen. It is the perfect song for this winter weather.

Can we expect a new album to come out anytime soon? At the moment, Kaash is just a single and I plan on releasing a few more tracks before we do anything with an album. I already have a number of singles ready and they will be released soon, with the next one due in a couple of months. At the moment, I want to drop a song and then as soon as that one starts moving down the charts, bang, another one comes out and that one goes to the top. As for the album, I’m just waiting for the right time. These days, when you release an album, it often doesn’t do justice to all the songs.

Does it give your singles more chance to be heard by releasing them separately? Definitely. I think what happens is that whenever someone drops an album, it doesn’t matter if you have ten really good songs, people are always going to pick the first one and listen to that one the most. That is the one that has been promoted and that is the one with a video. By releasing singles separately, it gives each track more time and more exposure which is only a good thing.

Porsche Cayman GT4 By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk

Porsche has just announced its newest addition to the family – the Porsche Cayman GT4 which is perhaps the most anticipated new performance car of 2015. Why? Because this is the car that should finally demonstrate the full potential of the brilliant Cayman mid-engined chassis. This is the first time Porsche has introduced such a focused GT model based on the mid-engined, two-seat Cayman coupe. Sharing components and genetic spirit with the iconic 911 GT3, a lap time of 7 min 40 sec around the Nürburgring Nordschleife places the Cayman GT4 emphatically as the new benchmark at the top of its market segment. It also makes a clear statement that Porsche will continue to promote radical two-door sports cars now and in the future sports cars that are developed at the company’s Motorsport department in Weissach.

Porsche Cayman GT4 A new animal with the genetic spirit of the iconic 911 GT3 will eat up the road Continued from page 75 The engine, chassis, brakes and aerodynamic design of the Cayman GT4 are configured for maximum driving dynamics; yet the top model still retains the versatility and everyday utility that are typical of a Porsche. The Cayman GT4 is powered by a mid-mounted, 3.8-litre flat-six engine with 385 hp (283 kW) produced at 7,400 rpm, which is derived from the 911 Carrera S engine. Its power is transmitted by a standard six-speed manual gearbox with dynamic gearbox mounts - there is no PDK transmission option. This translates in to acceleration from zero to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds; top speed is 183 mph. The car's NEDC fuel consumption is 27.4 mpg, equivalent to 238 g/km CO2. The body is lowered by 30 mm versus the standard Cayman, and features a purposefully-proportioned brake system. Furthermore, the chassis has been comprehensively fine-tuned with many components shared with the 911 GT3. The new GT4 is clearly differentiated from its brothers in the Cayman range. Three distinctive inlet openings in the nose and a large fixed rear wing are part of an aerodynamic package which is systematically designed to not only reduce lift but also generate downforce. Upon request, the Cayman GT4 can be equipped even more comprehensively for more sporting, or track day driving. Options include

PCCB ceramic brakes, shell-backed seats made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), a custom Sport Chrono Package with the unique Track Precision app, and a Club Sport Package. The interior of the Cayman GT4 is designed so that the driver and passenger can become immersed in unfiltered driving enjoyment. Sports seats, upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara, are distinguished by very good lateral support. Due to its compact dimensions, the new GT4 sports steering wheel guarantees ideal control and direct steering feedback. Technical aspects of the new Cayman GT4 are based on the 911 GT3. As a mid-engined sports car and a prime example of driving dynamics in its class, it follows the conceptual tradition of such cars as the 904 GTS, 911 GT1, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. GT sports cars from Porsche embody the most passionate transfer of technology from the race track to the road, and clearly demonstrate the sporting core of the brand: Intelligent Performance. Chevrolet’s back with a vengeance with it’s supercharged 650bhp V8 Corvette Z06

The Z06 rejoins the Corvette lineup for 2015 as the most trackcapable model in the iconic car's 62-year history. Stretching the performance envelope for Corvette with unprecedented levels of aerodynamic downforce, a jawdropping 650bhp, thanks to its supercharged LT4 supercharged 6.2L V-8 engine and its highperformance eight-speed paddleshift automatic transmission. The all-new is SAE-certified at 650 horsepower (485 kW) engine delivers 6,400 rpm and 650 lb-ft of torque (881 Nm) at 3,600 rpm making the 2015 Corvette Z06 the most powerful production car ever from General Motors. For the first time since 1963, the Z06 is also offered in coupe and convertible models and is loaded with all sorts of technical gadgets such as an electric-locking glovebox, 8-inch colour touch radio, satnav, Bose audio system, headup display, keyless entry and rearvision camera, just to name a few. The aluminum structure is 20 percent stiffer than the previous, fixed-roof Z06 and actually, building a modern Z06 Convertible was only enabled by recent technological advancements over the last five years, which made it possible to produce a frame strong enough for a Z06 Convertible. As there are no structural reinforcements needed for the Z06 Convertible, it has a nearly identical curb weight as the Z06 Coupe. They also share the same chassis tuning, powertrain output, driver technologies and equipment options - including a

track-focused Z07 Performance Package. The Z07 package adds adjustable front and rear aero components for unprecedented aerodynamic downforce, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires for enhanced grip, and Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake rotors that improve braking performance and contribute to greater handling through reduced unsprung weight. The all-new, industry-leading ‘Performance Data Recorder’ enables users to record highdefinition video, with telemetry overlays, of their driving experiences on and off the track. The performance targets of the Z06 also posed a challenge for the design team, which had to create a striking design that also contributed to increased capabilities. The design changes began not with the exterior panels, but the tyres. To deliver the levels of grip needed for the Z06's performance targets, the car was fitted with larger Michelin tires (Pilot Super Sport tires for the Z06; Sport Cup 2 tires with the Z07 package). The P285/30ZR19 front tires are 1.5 inches wider than the tires on the Stingray, while the 335/25ZR20 rear tires are two inches wider. To cover the wider tyre tread, the fenders of the Z06 were extended by 2.2 inches (56 mm) at the front, and 3.15 inches (80 mm) at the rear. These extensions give the Corvette Z06 a wider, lower appearance further emphasized by a unique rear fascia. Their

open, ultralight design showcases the massive Brembo brakes, which are part of the design aesthetic: The standard Z06 features a front splitter, spats around the front wheel openings, a unique carbon-fiber hood with a larger vent, and a rear spoiler. The exterior design also reflects the increased cooling required for the new Corvette Z06. For example, the mesh pattern on the front fascia was painstakingly designed to deliver the most possible airflow to the supercharger's intercooler heat exchanger, so much so that the mesh grill directs more air into the engine bay than if the grille was removed. The unique grille also features dedicated brake-cooling intakes and wider grille outlets on the bottom serve as air diffusers. The grille is complemented with a larger hood vent, which vents hot air from the engine compartment and contributes to downforce by allowing air driven through the grille to exit through the hood rather than being forced under the car, which could create lift. Additional cooling elements include larger front fender vents and unique air blades over the inlets on the rear fenders of Coupe models, which force about 50 percent more air into the cooling ducts for the transmission and differential coolers than those on the Stingray. Convertible models feature under-body inlets. To cope with the additional airflow, Z06 Coupe and Convertible also have larger rearfascia openings than the Stingray.

On Chorse for the top Bradford student gallops her way to success WINNER: Zahra Shah may only be 11-years-old but is already gathering quite a collection of rosettes

Whilst people struggle to stand on their own two feet in the winter weather, a young schoolgirl from Bradford has shown she is more than capable of controlling four legs, as she excels in her passion for horse riding. 11-year-old Zahra Shah has been riding horses almost all her life and competes in equestrian competitions – both junior and senior. Hopping on her first horse at the age of just three-yearsold, the Bradford Girls Grammar School Year 7 pupil now rides every weekend at Throstle Nest Riding School, Farsley. Most recently, the talented competitor enjoyed success in the dressage ring at a Throstle Nest competition, riding her her favourite horse Charlie - a stunning 14.2- hands chestnut. With a memorable display of her all-round equestrian talent, Zahra impressed the judges, and despite being considerably younger than many competitors, she was rewarded with a third place winner's rosette. Competition organiser and owner of the Riding School, Jeanette Wheeler, said: “Zahra is a wonderful young rider and is showing great promise. “She gave a beautiful

performance on Charlie, riding with such confidence to deserve her high placing.” This latest success is not the first time Zahra has seen her jacket decorated with colourful ribbons. Last year, she clinched top prize in her first ever show-jumping competition, registering a flawless display, before stepping up to senior competition later that

day and earning herself a fifth place ranking in the challenging ‘jump-off’ category. Zahra began her training at the Shaygate Riding School in Wilsden before moving to the Shay Lane Stables in Halifax. She now rides every weekend in Farsley andenjoys looking after all the horses and learning about stable management.

Indian GP still possible

Motorsport fans in India may feel a little let-down by their nation’s lack of commitment in attempting to bring any fuel sports to the South Asian country in recent times, yet that could soon change according to one sport’s CEO. After the Indian Grand Prix was discontinued for the 2014 and 2015 season, there is no denying that India looked to have fallen out of love with motorsports – not according to MotoGP’s chief, Carmelo Ezpeleta. The World Superbike Series may have been cancelled two years ago but Ezpeleta has now said he remains hopeful that India will be ready to host a race ‘pretty soon’ if guidelines are

changed. “We would love to have a race in India but there are many issues that need to be sorted out first -like customs

clearances,” he told the Times of India. “I am sure the govt will support us once MotoGP's popularity shoots up and we may stage a race in the next couple of years. Getting an Indian manufacturer like Mahindra to supply bikes for a team is one step in that direction.” However, Ezpeleta did add that no promoter had yet been found for the sport in India. He continued: “We are in talks with a lot of corporates but nothing concrete has come up. There are many film stars interested in promoting MotoGP and we would love to have them at our races. In particular, we had even got a request from John POTENTIAL: Carmelo Abraham.” Ezpeleta says he remains optimistic about the chances of a MotoGP return to India

PERFORMANCE ENHANCING DRUGS IN BOXING By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk

Mike Tyson the former world heavyweight champion was asked an interesting question about how modern day boxing compared to boxing in the past and what was the difference? The answer given by Tyson was simple and that is boxing over the years has evolved and with improved knowledge about the sport and nutrition the human body has improved with athletes getting bigger, stronger and better. Modern day sport has advanced and that is evidential with the previous world records being broken and athletes getting stronger. The advancement of the sport also means that it is now more competitive amongst the participants and this has led to many athletes including boxers and MMA fighters turning to sport enhancing drugs to give them an edge over the competition. The sport enhancement drugs or steroids can alter normal bodily function and give the boxer an unfair advantage, pose a health risk and violate the sport. The use of such a drug is illegal and known as cheating and is often referred to as doping. There are a number of illegal drugs being used in the sport of boxing and they are generally used to enhance the physical performance of the boxer in an attempt to prevent them falling behind the competitor’s even if it means damaging their health and risking their

sport careers. The authorities test the athletes for drug use by a simple sample analysis of both blood and urine and if drug cheating is confirmed then the penalties imposed in the past have included being stripped of their championship title, lifetime banned from the sport or further civil or criminal charges including a fine. There have been a number of boxers like Bantamweight John Donnelly, British heavyweights Ali Adams, Larry Olubamiwu, American welterweight Andre Berto and Lamont Peterson to name a few who were all found guilty of the anti-doping violations and penalised or banned from the sport of boxing. In the UK the British Board of Control has promised a tighter control over illegal substance use in boxing and increased its programme of random drug testing with the identities of the “cheats” to be revealed. In my view the sport of boxing is risky business and each time the boxer enters the boxing ring they carry a huge risk to their health and wellbeing and this is significantly increased and much more deadly if one of the opponents has been using performance enhancing drugs. Boxer Amir Khan who fell victim to a drug cheat (Lamont Peterson) and lost his welterweight title previously has said "There's a lot of drug cheats in boxing right now. I didn't know there were so many until we started to catch people out and I believe every fighter should be randomly tested. You need to be able to trust another boxer you are facing because you are training to bash each other up, it's dangerous as it is. It shows how many have been caught recently that it happens in boxing. It needs to be cleaned up."

FIFA have confirmed that incumbent Sepp Blatter, former Portugal playmaker Luis Figo, Dutch FA president Michael van Praag and Prince Ali Bin Al-Hussein of Jordan have bid to stand for president. Prospective candidates, David Ginola and Jerome Champagne both ended their campaigns for the top seat in world football last week.

CONTROVERSIAL: Current FIFA president, Sepp Blatter, will face three contenders for his job in a May vote

Soccer's governing body said in a statement that the four would be subject to integrity checks carried out by FIFA's ethics committee before they could be formally declared as candidates. “Upon receipt of the results of the integrity checks, the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee will reconvene in order to review all of the submissions and validate

their compliance with the applicable FIFA regulatory provisions,” said FIFA in a statement. “Following this process, the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee will formally admit and declare the candidates who are eligible for the office of FIFA President.” Blatter, 78, is standing for a fifth mandate, having been in power since 1998 and despite having many critics in Europe, is still expected to be one of the favourites to win the vote in Zurich on 29th May.

Suliman becomes a Villain Premier League club snap up Asian talent By Ashley Grint

ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

One of England’s highest rated young Asian footballers committed his future to Aston Villa last month, despite reported interest from European giants, Bayern Munich. 16-year-old Easah Suliman, from Moseley in Birmingham, has been with the Midland outfit since the age of eight, progressing up through the youth teams. A versatile defender, who can operate either at centreback or left-back, the teenage ace can also play in centre midfield if required. Last season, he was a member of the academy squad which competed in the Barclays Under-18s Premier League and FA Youth Cup, whilst also representing England at U17 level. Academy director Sean Kimberley was thrilled to sign up Suliman and believes he has all the skills and potential to be a key player for Villa in the future. He said: “We're delighted that Easah has signed his first professional contract with the club. “Easah has been at the club through his foundation years at junior school and he's a Birmingham lad who's come through the local recruitment process. “We've been able to

develop young, local players over the years and it's great that we can continue to do that with Easah. “He's going away with England U17s next month and he's continuing to make good progress both with them and here at Villa. He's at the start of his career now and everything is in front of him.

“The key for him now is to continue to work hard, to maintain the same excellent attitude he has displayed so far and to continue to learn from his coaches. “Having fought off competition from home and abroad for his signature, everyone here at Villa will help him get the most out of

his abilities and we're excited to work with him in the coming years.” Suliman joins an exclusive list of Asian players registered to Premier League teams, and will look to make an impact if given a chance by current youth-favouring manager, Paul Lambert.

A winning return Khan triumphant in 61-second comeback KNOCK-OUT: Khan says he is already planning his next fight and hopes a title chance will be available in the near future

Seven months before his international ban from cricket was set to expire, convicted spot-fixer Mohammad Amir has been told he can return to the sport. The 22-year-old has not played since being banned after a tour of England in 2010, when teammates Salman Butt and Mohammed Asif were also charged with similar offences. Amir will be able to represent Pakistan from October, after a six month probation period is completed, meaning his return to the international stage could come against England in the scheduled October series. An ICC statement said: “The ACSU chairman, Sir Ronnie Flanagan, with the prior approval of the ICC Board and the Pakistan Cricket Board, has exercised his discretion to allow Mohammad Amir to return to domestic cricket played under the auspices of the Pakistan Cricket Board with immediate effect. “Amir’s five-year ban is scheduled to expire on 2nd September 2015. The ACSU chairman had exercised the powers vested in him under Article 6.8 of the ICC AntiCorruption Code after he was satisfied that Amir had cooperated with the ACSU by fully disclosing his part in the matters that led to his disqualification, admitting his guilt, showing remorse and cooperating with the Unit’s on-going investigations and by recording messages for the ACSU education sessions.”

Back page story continued The bout was a ‘long time coming’ for Khan, who has been out of action since injuring his wrist, and said he could not have wished for a better return. “These past few months I have been more motivated than ever to make my return and it felt great to finally be back in the ring,” he said. “I hadn’t planned on winning in around 61 seconds but that’s the way it played out so I couldn’t really have wished for a better match.” Despite coming into the fight at a height and weight disadvantage, Khan quickly gained control of the match-up with his speed and combinations, proving too hard to handle for Voros. Twice knocking his opponent down to the mat, the referee was forced to intervene and stop the match-up in just the first round. Powerful blows to the

head and ribs by Khan were reminiscent of his preinjury form, and the super bantamweight competitor believes he has what it takes to return to, and surpass, his previous best. “At the moment I feel great,” he said. “I have a great programme in place, a good diet and training is going really well. “The thing that used to let me down when I was fighting before was the long space between my fights and that is going to change now. “We are already looking at the next fight and a possible title fight in the near future, so watch this space.” He added: “I also just want to say a big thank you to all my fans, and team who have stood by me throughout my career - also my sponsors, Kingsland Business Recovery and Kesser Jewellers Bradford, for their amazing support.” Khan’s record now stands at seven wins and a single defeat with his latest knockout triumph, only the second such of his career.

TRIUMPHANT: Tasif Khan registered a convincing win on his comeback to action last week, knocking out his opponent in just over a minute

Khan triumphant in 61-second comeback By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

After two years of having to watch from the sidelines, Tasif Khan finally made his ring return last week as he registered a convincing knockout victory over Richard Voros. Continuing where he left off in December 2012, the Bradford boxer took little time to get back into his stride as he dominated the Hungarian opponent in little over one minute at the York Hall, London.
