North Carolina murders By Anush Ansari
anush@asianexpress.co.uk
TRAGIC LOSS: 23-year-old Deah Shaddy Barakat, who was Syrian American, his 21-year-old Palestinian American wife, Yusor Mohammad, and her sister, 19-year-old Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, were killed execution-style by a self-described atheist with a history of harassment and racist intimidation
Fathers of slain USA Muslim students maintains “It was a hate crime”
The fathers of the three promising Muslim students shot in their Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA apartment spoke before their funeral on Thursday 12th February, calling on Americans and the rest of the world to understand that they died in a hate crime. Slain on the Tuesday 10th February night shooting were dental student Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21 and her sister, Razan Mohammad AbuSalha, 19. Police had said the attack was preceded by a long-standing NEIGHBOUR: 41-year-old Craig Hicks has been charged with first degree murder of all three students
dispute over parking with their neighbour Craig Hicks, 46, who has been formally charged on the murder of the three students. However, in the wake of the killing of three promising students there has been an outcry about how Western media has failed to cover this story. The news originally spread fast on social media such as Facebook and Twitter, mainly by Muslims, and has sparked a worldwide social media and human rights outcry of hashtag “Muslim Lives Matter.” Despite the assumption that Hicks attacked the students over a
parking dispute, many from the Muslim global community believe the attack is related to religious or ethnic discrimination. The father of the two women who lost their lives has called it a hate crime. The women’s father, Dr. Mohammad Abu-Salha, who has a psychiatry practice in Clayton, USA, said regardless of what prompted the shooting, Hicks’ underlying animosity toward Barakat and Abu-Salha was based on their religion and culture. The three students all grew up in Raleigh. The two women graduated from Athens Drive High School, and Barakat graduated from Broughton High School. They all attended N.C. State University as undergraduates, where they all earned honours. Barakat finished in 2013, and Yusor Abu-Salha graduated last fall. Razan Abu-Salha, a design student, made the dean’s list in her first semester in the fall. Yusor Abu-Salha was to enroll at UNC’s dental school next fall, joining her husband there. They planned to open a practice together, but both advocated for global dental health, providing care and supplies to people in the United States and the Middle East. On 29th January, Barakat posted a Facebook photo of a Durham project that gave dental supplies and food to more than 75 homeless people this year. Barakat was scheduled to travel with 10 other dentists this summer to Reyhanli, Turkey. There, they planned to treat Syrian refugee children for urgent dental needs, pass out toothbrushes and toothpaste, and support Turkish dentists and clinics.

#MuslimLivesMatter Protest against BBC silence over Chapel Hill Shooting Anti-racists and Muslim communities protested outside the BBC Broadcasting House in Portland Place, London last week to condemn the BBC’s silence in regard to the horrific shooting of three Muslim people in the USA. In stark contrast to the Paris shootings, there was no immediate coverage, it was not headline news or even covered in the main news bulletins. On the other hand there was widespread coverage on social media, where #MuslimLivesMatter trended - a reference to the racist nature of the attack and the lack of coverage of it. Sabby Dhalu, Organiser of Stand up to Racism said: "Our condolences and thoughts are with the families and friends of Deah Shaddy Barakat, Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha,and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha. “We support their calls for this to be considered a hate crime. Any loss of life should be treated equally. Muslim people are consistently portrayed as the perpetrators but not the victims of
terrorism and hatred. “We are saddened by the lack of media coverage in this case, which stands in stark contrast to the wall to wall top story coverage that the Paris shootings rightfully
received. “Politicians and influential figures lined up to blame the entire Muslim community for those horrific actions and 'kill all muslims' trended worldwide on twitter without an international
outcry. “We are concerned that attacks against the Muslim community are taking place in a heightened climate of Islamophobia and hatred. We will say loudly and clearly that Muslim lives matter, all attacks of this nature should be brought to justice and receive equal coverage. Weyman Bennett, Joint National Secretary Unite Against Fascism said: "The prevalence of racism and Islamophobia means that when Muslim and Black people are murdered, their plight is willfully ignored. “In a modern democracy, the first right is a right to life. “To deny Muslim people equal treatment is a reflection of anti-Muslim racism in our society. We must stand in solidarity with the Muslim community. They are today's scapegoats. Tomorrow it will be others."
“We are saddened by the lack of media coverage in this case, which stands in stark contrast to the wall-to-wall top story coverage that the Paris shootings rightfully received.”

EXCLUSIVE: Editor Andleeb Hanif speaks with Prime Minister David Cameron at Asian Express offices in Leeds
The now much-criticised letter that communities secretary Eric Pickles sent to mosques, telling Muslims they to face the “challenges of integration and radicalisation”, has been supported by the Prime Minister. In a one-to-one interview at the Asian Express offices in Leeds, David Cameron said Eric Pickles' letter, which told more than 1,000 Islamic leaders they "had more work to do" to root our extremists, was "reasonable, sensible and moderate". Eric Pickles letter, which was sent out in the wake of the terror attacks in France, was slammed by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) and many other Muslim leaders, who said the letter appeared to reenforce claims by the far right about Islam not being a part of British society. Mr. Cameron said that anyone reading the letter could see that it clearly praises the Muslim community saying that they make a great contribution to UK, and that what is happening in terms of extremist terror has nothing to do with the true religion of Islam. The letter had also praised the way Muslims in Britain had responded to the Paris terror attacks and Mr Cameron said that he believes that in no way did the letter intend to undermine Muslims in Great Britain and that it was being taken out of context. When asked if he understands how Muslim’s in Britain may be feeling exposed and vulnerable to stigmatisation by the letter, Mr Cameron says: “We cannot turn away from Islamist extremism, all of us have to look at this and ask how do we combat this poisonous narrative. Obviously we needed the Muslim community in Great Britain to join us on this.”

Islamist ideology “We need to unite to make a clear and loud definition between Islam - a religion of peace and Islamist extremism,” says Prime Minister
The Prime Minister said that the Iraq war or 911 attack was just a wake up call to the realisation of radicalisation of vulnerable young Muslim men and that “we cannot turn away from this - all of us have to look at this and is ask how do we combat this poisonous narrative,” he says. He criticised the Governemnt’s old Prevent programme stating that it was a “bit muddled” and that it didn’t do very well on either objectives of trying to support mosques and prevent terrorism. It confused the delivery of Government policy to promote integration to prevent terrorism. “Obviously we need the Muslim community in Great Britain to work with us. “We need to unite to make a clear and loud definition between Islam a religion of peace and Islamist extremism, and we need the help of the Muslim leaders on facilitating this,” says the Prime Minister. He added that he feels rooting out terrorism is a generational challenge and feels that it’s something that will take a while to overcome. “We must unite as a nation to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure that they are given appropriate advice and support. “At the same time, we have to stand up and fight against Islamophobia. “It’s a real problem in our country and it makes people feel vulnerable and fearful and it is extremely unpleasant and unnecessary,” he says. Faith leaders, he says, are in a unique position in British society as they have a precious opportunity and important responsibility in explaining and demonstrating how faith in Islam can be part of British identity.

Two-time world champion Amir Khan was fighting in the corner of society’s most vulnerable earlier this week as he helped feed the homeless in Leeds. Showing his support for local charity, St George’s Crypt, he attended the event alongside his team from the Amir Khan Foundation, as well as councillors and members of the local Muslim community. Amir was joined by brother, and fellow boxer, Haroon, as they served up meals from the charity’s kitchen to more than 80 people, whilst speaking with those in attendance. The welterweight boxer then joined some of the service users whilst they ate to talk further about why he was visiting on the day, and to learn more about the crypt’s work. Speaking ‘out of the kitchen’, Amir said: “The Amir Khan Foundation is about giving back to the local people and local communities. “A lot of people don’t have the right support in their lives at the moment and that is what we want to give them.” Riz Malik, on behalf of the Amir Khan Foundation, added: “We in the Foundation are looking for opportunities to make a real difference to people who have suffered disadvantage and poverty in their lives. “St George’s Crypt – through its work with homeless people since 1930 – is an excellent example of a charity producing innovative solutions for its clients, and we hope to be able to establish a long term relationship with the Crypt in helping them to continue producing effective solutions”.

The Amir Khan Foundation was launched in August last year and has been set up to support deprived, disadvantaged children and young people - both internationally and nationally. Last week’s event was arranged with the help of Leeds City Council who were approached by the foundation requesting to be put in touch with a charity which works with young people who are in challenging situations due to adverse life chances. Martin Patterson, a Director of the Crypt, said: “We are delighted that Amir Khan and the team from the Foundation have been able to visit the Crypt today. “We concentrate on providing effective training and engagement opportunities in order to help our clients to move in life from an increasingly complex range of challenges brought on by issues as homelessness, addiction, mental and physical health problems, poor

education and family breakdown. “Amir’s visit is a real inspiration for our clients and they were delighted to meet him today.” Also present on the day were a number of city councillors and Imam at the local Leeds Makkah Masjid, Qari Asim MBE. Mr Asim said the work carried out at the charity for the past 85 years was a ‘credit to the city’ whilst last week’s event with Amir, was extra positive for the Muslim community. “It is important that, from a Muslim perspective, we see funds raised in this country, stay in this country as well as going abroad,” he said. “We need to help people here at home, and improve the financial state of people struggling, due to no fault of their own.” He added: “I was very pleased to be involved with the project on Monday and to see the Amir Khan Foundation up-close helping local communities.”

Emotional plea for return of dead daughter’s passport
February 2015 - 2nd Edition
Cover story continued On Thursday 22nd January, the family home on Killinghall Drive, Undercliffe, was targeted when thieves broke in and stole a number of items after forcing their way into locked bedrooms. Amongst the items taken was 12-year-old Aisha Hanif’s only ever passport. Aisha passed away two weeks before her 13th birthday from Sanfillipo Syndrome and had only been out of the country once with her family to visit grandparents in Pakistan. Her mother, Shamshed Hanif, a local driving instructor, had been working at the time of the raid last month. Upon returning home, she noticed the documents had been taken and was shocked to see Aisha’s passport had gone. Mrs Hanif said: “If I could speak to the people who broke into my home I would tell them they can keep all the other passports and all the items they took. “The only thing I ask is for the return of my daughter’s passport. Nobody can gain anything from it, it was out-ofdate, and will be worthless to anyone else. To us it is priceless. “That was the only time Aisha ever went abroad when we went to Pakistan to see our family. It is the only time we were all together so it holds a

lot of sentimental value for us.” Describing Aisha as a fun, loving child who was always full of life, Mrs Hanif added: “She was a very special child and had the ability to make you smile by just looking at her. “You may have been having a bad day but she was the one who could always put a smile on your face.” Detective Constable Dean Patterson, of Bradford District CID, says an investigation is still ongoing into the matter, and urged anyone with information to get in touch. DC Patterson said: “We would like to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the Killinghall Drive area of
Undercliffe between 9.05am and 10.30am on Thursday 22nd January. “Our inquiries lead us to believe that a man on a silver bike was seen near the property at about 9am that day, and we would like to speak to anyone who might have seen this man, who might have headed towards Swires Road or Pollard Lane. “A number of passports and other travel documentation were stolen in this burglary, so I would urge anyone who is offered such documentation to contact Bradford District CID on 101, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

17 offers for grammar school’s intellectual elite

The chance to study at one of England’s most prestigious universities is not a common occurrence yet for 17 academics at a single Leeds sixth form, a life at Oxbridge could be just around the corner. Students from the Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) are continuing the impressive success rate of their predecessors in securing offers from Oxford and Cambridge universities. Fourteen current Year 13 students now hold conditional offers from the two renowned establishments, whilst three alumni, who graduated last year, have also received offers. Amongst the nine students holding a conditional offer from Cambridge are two 18-year-olds, Ashwin Venkatesh and Amol Joshi, who both hope to study medicine. The intellectual pair both currently take the same lessons at GSAL and have similar aspirations for their future academic life. Ashwin, from Alwoodley, noted the moment he opened the letter confirming his conditional offer last month and how determined he was now to achieve the grades ‘expected’ of him. “My first and second interviews at Cambridge were held on 10th December and I felt they went as
Oxbridge awaits well as they could have but there is always a bit of uncertainty about whether you have done enough,” he said. “When I received my letter it didn’t really sink in at first and it still hasn’t now. crying on the phone. It is a big achievement but I think all of us are now even more determined to achieve the grades expected of us and attend Cambridge next year.” Amol, from Moortown, added that he was less confident following his interview but remained calm under pressure to impress the interviewees. “I was a bit nervous after the interview because I knew I had
made some mistakes but the important thing was that I was able to guide myself to a valid conclusion,” he said. “My letter arrived on 10th January like Ashwin and he actually phoned me in the morning to say ‘I’m in, how have you done’, before I had even looked. “I sent him a message later that day saying ‘you’re stuck with me for another six years’ which felt really

good.” Last year, 17 students from GSAL received offers from Oxbridge colleges, with this year’s tally equalling the record for the school. Teacher Ray Peacock is GSAL’s Oxbridge coordinator. He said he was ‘delighted’ to once again see a number of GSAL students receive offers from Oxbridge. Explaining more about the application process, he said: “It’s a demanding application process that has become increasingly competitive in recent years. “We offer a comprehensive programme of support in school, to help students demonstrate their passion for their chosen subjects on their UCAS personal statement, hone their independent thinking skills in preparation for the interview and prepare for specific admissions tests. “While the candidates engaged fully with our programme it is ultimately their own commitment and hard work that secured these sought after offers, and we are hugely proud of their success.”

Different cultures, same message Pakistani Youth Forum lead on Holocaust Memorial Day EDUCATE: Members of Kirklees’ Pakistan Youth Forum, and HPCA Youth Development Officer, Sofia Buncy, spoke passionately about the effects of the holocaust and other world genocides at Holocaust Memorial Day
Young members from Huddersfield’s Pakistani community led a touching tribute to victims of world genocides last month as they urged residents in Kirklees to ‘pull together’ and challenge all prejudices. The Huddersfield Pakistani Community Alliance youth leadership group, were invited to lead a touching presentation for the annual Halocaust Memorial Day at Dewsbury Town Hall on Wednesday 28th January. The event was attended by the Lord Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Ken Smith, alongside a mixed audience including Holocaust survivors and survivors of genocide in Bosnia, Burundi and Kurdish Iraq. Sofia Buncy, HPCA’s Youth Development Officer, said it was a ‘privilege’ for the young people to be invited to lead the event at a time where multi-faith relationships are struggling. “These are difficult times for everyone, no matter where you are,” she said. “We all fear for our safety and wellbeing. Therefore, it was especially important for our young to remind all of us of our responsibility” The event began with a powerful presentation
about the steps to genocide, written and performed by members of the Pakistani Youth Forum. Connecting the past to the present, and highlighting contemporary issues, members stepped into the shoes of individuals experiencing genocides and persecution to highlight real-life issues faced by victims. Palwasha Afzal, was a member of the presentation team, and explained what the group had been learning in advance to the event. “We have learnt a lot through involvement in this project about world injustice and genocide,” she said. “It was particularly heartening to discover that in the most trying of times human spirit excelled, Muslims and Jews took refuge in each other, putting their religious and racial differences aside.” Kim Strickson, organiser of the Holocaust Memorial Day event in Kirklees said: “The mixed audience was visibly moved by this honest and heartfelt start to the evening and congratulated and thanked the young people afterwards. “Those of us who have worked with members of PYF over many years, appreciated the time and care they put in to creating a presentation that would be sensitive to the content and spirit of this commemorative event and yet highlight contemporary acts of persecution and our joint responsibility to bring them to an end. “They did this with honesty, integrity and understanding. We are so proud of them.”

A new £2.1m base where the latest technology will help vulnerable residents live safely at home has officially opened last week. The state-of-the-art Assisted Living Leeds building at Leeds Dock was opened this morning by civic leaders, staff and some of the people already using the range of technologies that will be based there. As part of the event, a commemorative plaque was unveiled and a time capsule was sealed containing memories of the council’s Community Equipment Service, which relocated to the site after more than two decades in its former base at Roundhay. A partnership between the council and the local NHS, the project has seen a vacant building revitalised with a new reception, office area, training space, meeting rooms, and assessment facilities.

‘Mushy’ speaks with Asian Express
INSPIRATIONAL: Musharaf Asghar shot to stardom after his touching story was broadcast on Channel 4’s Educating Yorkshire
Britain’s most loved student on life after Thornhill By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Last year millions of people were glued to their television screens as Thornhill Academy’s Musharaf Asghar overcome his stammer on Channel 4’s hit documentary, Educating Yorkshire. His touching story helped earn the programme a number of awards over the past 12 months, with Musharaf, or ‘Mushy’ as he is well known, even having his own spin off programme ‘Stammer School’ following its success. Now, the nation’s favourite student may have left the nation’s favourite academy yet with regular contact with former staff, and A-levels to study for, ‘Educating Mushy’ is still very much his life. Speaking to the Asian Express about his new life as a local celebrity, Mushy said it has been an ‘honour’ to be involved in the show and hopes his personal story will help other people with stammers gain more confidence.
Q) What have you been up to since the end of Educating Yorkshire? A) I have actually been busy with a lot of college work and trying to set up a YouTube channel which will hopefully happen this year. I've got a lot going on. Q) How has your life changed since the Educating Yorkshire series? A) It's been amazing. From all the interviews and award shows. I'm absolutely honoured that I've been given this chance. Q) The moment you spoke with music playing, what was that like? A) It was quite emotional. Knowing that I knew the people sitting in front of me for five years and I hadn't really been able to speak to them was quite hard. Finally speaking in front of them was just a once in a life time experience. To see it on TV was quite weird. You never really imagine looking at yourself on TV. It was nice knowing the fact that there was something on TV which I could really relate to. Q) Do you keep in touch with the teachers at Thornhill? A) I definitely do. I try my best to keep in touch with all of them including the one of a kind Mr Burton. Q) Did you ever imagine the series would be so popular and win the awards it has? A) Not even a chance. As I've mentioned I’ve been honoured to not only be on TV but to see the show was a massive success. I can't thank the people in this nation enough for having so much love for me. I can't thank them enough for how much they have given me.
Q) Have you received any messages from people with similar stammers who saw your experience on television? A) Yes, I speak to quite a few people who have stammers and they have really thanked me for the confidence boost I have given them. Q) How did ‘Stammer School’ come about? A) Stammer School actually came about after Educating Yorkshire was a success. There would be no Stammer School without the love Educating Yorkshire got. Many people were messaging and emailing TwoFour (the production team of EY) that they wanted to know what happened next. If I had really overcame my stammer. I still remember getting a call from Saskia Smith (the producer of EY) telling me that they wanted to make a new documentary only about Stammering and

how it affects people in their daily lives. I was shocked but so pleased at how much positive reaction we got. Q) What was it like filming another documentary? A) This was absolutely perfect despite the fact I was fasting for nine or more hours due to Ramadan whilst filming the show. It’s shocking yet pleasing to see how many people stammer. I loved every part of it and wish I could relive it all over again. Q) What do you hope to do in the future? A) Right now I'm at college, I hope to study further and go to university. I'm also as I said before building a Yo u Tu b e career.

Kirklees College have joined forces with employment experts, Stafflex, to provide students with a platform to gain valuable work experience and help employers create their future workforce. ‘KC Works’ gives employers the opportunity to ‘try before they buy’ by taking prospective employees on for work experience to see if it works out first. Meanwhile, students will get a better understanding of individual organisations and the workplace – giving them valuable employability skills for when they leave college to work. Local employers were invited to a launch event in the college’s Landings 72 Restaurant on Monday to find out how they can get involved either though offering work experience or placements or taking on an apprentice. Kirklees College vice principal Melanie Brooke told employers the scheme was about developing work-based employability skills. “Too often we hear that young people aren’t prepared for work,” she said. “We can give them the knowledge, skills and techniques but you’re the people who can mould them into the employees of the future. “Kirklees College is a high performing college specialising in vocational training. We are not a last option, we are the first choice for the right students and together we can get young people into employment and help regenerate the local area.” Jude Flatley, KC Works project manager for Kirklees College, added: “Stafflex are experts at employer engagement and Kirklees College are experts in education so hopefully together we can give students exciting work placements and help employers fill the gaps in their workforce with skilled people. “We are really passionate about this project and giving our students the best opportunity for work when they leave college.” The Stafflex team will help to prepare the young recruits for employers from across the region, many of whom are already clients of the longestablished recruitment firm. Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney also attended the launch and said he would be supporting the scheme by taking on an apprentice.

PRIME MINISTER AT ASIAN EXPRESS HQ
February 2015 - 2nd Edition
WARM WELCOME: Eight-year-old Shyla Hanif greets the Prime Minister at the Asian Express offices with a bouquet of flowers
David Cameron pays a visit to Britain’s largest free Asian newspaper and joins ABDN conference with Yorkshire’s business leaders Prime Minister David Cameron traded 10 Downing Street for 4 Armley Court earlier this week as he paid a visit to the UK’s largest free pick-up Asian publication. The Prime Minister graced the offices of Asian Express Newspaper on Thursday 5th February, as part of his visit to Yorkshire where he further pledged his commitment to end the ‘decades old divide between the North and South’. Mr Cameron seemed very relaxed as he met with the dedicated team of Asian Express, who welcomed his arrival at the Leeds-based offices. A few jokes were cracked about how tall the PM actually was, where Mr Cameron laughingly stated that TV cameras make everyone seem short and stout. Being led on a tour of the Asian Express Newspaper office’s by co-founders, Managing Director Nadim Hanif, and Editor-in-Chief, Andleeb Hanif, Mr Cameron viewed some of the recent front page headlines and commended the newspaper for its work on not just a local but national level. The Prime Minister had also facilitated a conference with the Asian Business Development Network (ABDN) in Leeds, which has recently been acquired by Nadim Hanif. A number of Yorkshire’s most influential Asian business leaders attended

Arthur France MBE recognised for services to Leeds
AWARDED: Arthur France MBE receives his ‘Leeds Award’ from Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr David Congreve
Top civic honour A tireless community campaigner, who amongst his many achievements was the founder of one of Leeds’ most popular and celebrated annual cultural events, has received a top civic honour. As part of a special ceremony held in the civic hall this month, Arthur France MBE was recognised for his fantastic contribution to the city for nearly 60 years, and in particular the West Indian community, with the presentation of a ‘Leeds Award’ by the Lord Mayor, Councillor David Congreve. Arthur, who was originally born on the Caribbean island of Nevis, moved to Leeds with his sister in 1957, and in 1963 became one of three people which pioneered and founded the United Caribbean Association (UCA). Having enjoyed the theatre and colour of the carnival as a child in Nevis, Arthur had a dream of Leeds having its very own event, and this ambition was realised in 1967 when the city held its first ever
carnival, which was also the first to be held in Europe. Arthur has also been the chairperson of the Leeds Carnival since its inception with the event continuing to go from strength to strength, now firmly established as an annual celebration which is recognised and loved by people not just in the UK

I simply believed that we all have a responsibility to be good citizens, to help others and to contribute to making the places where we live the best they can be. “I still believe that today, so I am touched and honoured to receive the Leeds Award. “I have an enduring love for my Caribbean culture and my adopted home city of Leeds and I am proud that the Leeds West Indian Carnival has flown the flag for all that’s great about both.” Providing facilities and creating educational opportunities for young people and the wider community have also continued to be one of Arthur’s passions. In 1973, this included becoming a member of a steering group which set up Chapeltown Community Centre, assisting with the creation of a learning and computer school. In 1985, he was also named chair of the Leeds West Indian Centre, a post which again he continues to hold today.

“73% of Muslims said their national identity was British”
Data reveals Muslim population has risen by one-million The Muslim population of England and Wales increased by more than a million in the space of a decade, a newly published report has revealed, whilst the number of Muslim children attending school has doubled since 2001. An analysis of 2011 Census data for the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) suggests the Muslim population had increased 75 per cent from 1.5 million in 2001 to 2.7 million, with a third below the age of 15. The research shows one in 12 school-age children was Muslim and there had been a significant improvement in Muslim education, with just a quarter not having any qualifications compared with two-infive 10 years previously. But just one in five was in full-time employment, compared with one in three of the wider population, with the researchers saying Muslims face a ‘double penalty... in entering the labour market - of racial discrimination as well as Islamophobia’. While more than half were born outside the country, 73 per cent said their national identity was British, the British Muslims in Numbers report said. Three-quarters of the Muslim population was concentrated in London, the West Midlands, the North West and Yorkshire and Humber and 46 per cent lived in the top 10 per cent most deprived areas. It’s also suggested that 71 per cent of Muslim women between the ages of 16 and 24 were not in employment, compared to
approximately half the general population. For women aged 25 to 49, it says that 57 per cent of Muslim women were in employment, compared with 80 per cent of women overall. Talha Ahmad, a senior member of the MCB, told the BBC the significant rise in the population could be put down in part to refugees from countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq and conversions. The report, led by Sundas Ali of the University of Oxford, said: “There is need for various stakeholders - Muslim civil society, policy institutes, employers, trade unions and the Department for Work and Pensions - to facilitate conditions and opportunities in the labour market. "Muslim civil society needs to have a better appreciation of the social realities." Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: “Taking data from the 2011 census, this important new report from the Muslim Council of Britain helps give us a snapshot of the socio-economic challenges and opportunities now facing Britain's Muslim communities. “What's not in doubt is that British Muslims can be proud of the contribution they make to our country. Drawing on analysis like this, together, we can help create jobs, drive growth and enable more people to get on - building the stronger economy and fairer society we want for Britain's future.”

The Singing A compilation of three fearless plays explores some explosive and truly dangerous real life stories of women The Creative Team
A triad of three fearless plays, exploring women and the Arab revolutions, begs to ask the question “was the Arab Spring the greatest missed opportunity for humanity of the 21st century?” The ‘Singing Stones’ is a production by Mama Quilla - an award-winning, woman-led performing arts company spotlighting human rights issues, which offers a female perspective on the big topics of the day. One short piece in this project, ‘The Women’s Spring’, focussing on the female protestors in Tahrir Square, threw up some extraordinary stories, including women being dragged off and subjected to “virginity” tests, then “disappearing”. In Libya, the female members of the family of a soldier who refused to fire at civilian protestors were lured to a house that was then set ablaze. In Syria, women were taken from their homes at night and forced to witness the torture of their brothers, fathers or husbands, before being taken home to testify and spread terror.
“Women are not free anywhere in this world until all women in the world are free.” Leymah Gbowee (Liberian peace activist) With the more recent kidnap, rape and enslavement of thousands of ordinary women, the stories continue. And of course, the very diverse women street protestors, so lively and present at the beginning, were ignored, very briefly celebrated, and then denied and ultimately derided. The three plays titled ‘Stones’, ‘The Women’s Spring’ and ‘The Singing Stones’ , is very much influenced by what has been learnt from blogs and social media of real women. The explosive and truly dangerous sensitivity of the facts became apparent as blogs were taken down and testimonies – and indeed people – disappeared. Mama Quilla, founded in 1999 by Kay Adshead and Lucinda Gane, has a mission to explore the big issues of the day from the female viewpoint. The company’s first three major productions, ‘The Bogus Woman’, ‘Bites’, and ‘Bones’ were all performed at the Bush Theatre and published by Oberon Books. All were subsequently produced internationally.

Student rewarded for self less homeless project
Star Citizen Sarish A fundraising teen from Bradford was joined by the likes of Amir Khan and Prince Charles last week as she was chosen to represent Yorkshire at a national NCS event. Sarish Saghir, a Year 12 student at Bradford Girls Grammars School, worked tirelessly as a volunteer over the Christmas period through the National Citizenship Service, helping homeless people in the city. After successfully securing a £2,000 donation through the Starbucks Youth Action programme, Sarish teamed up with a group of volunteers to buy and distribute clothing, blankets, sleeping bags and food, to those less fortunate. As a result of the project, self entitled ‘Hope for the Homeless’, the Girlington volunteer was selected to attend a special VIP event in Sunderland on Tuesday 27th January, alongside 100 other young people. The event was organised to recognise the significant commitment of NCS volunteers like Sarish, who have collectively given over three million hours to their communities. Although she may not have had the opportunity to meet His Royal Highness, she was

delighted when the Royal stopped to listen to her presentation about her recent social action project. After the presentation Sarish was then able to meet Olympic Medallist and NCS Ambassador, Amir Khan, to talk about her volunteering work. “He was really interested to hear about what I had been doing,” she said. “He said he was very impressed by my commitment and encouraged me to continue the good work. “Amir was so friendly and happy to spend time with all of us, answering questions about his family and about his anticipated fight with Floyd Mayweather. “He was even happy to pose for selfies.” Sarish was invited to the event following the completion of the NCS Leaders Programme – an
intensive, week-long residential course in London. Only one hundred volunteers, from the 40,000 young people who participate in the national programme, are nominated to take part in the course every year. Sarish now plans to continue her volunteering work through the NCS and the Sixth Form Community Volunteering Programme (CVP), recently introduced to encourage students to get involved in community projects both within the school, through a mentoring programme, and out in the local community. With a partnership secured with the national volunteering charity, ‘vInspired’, students are able to work towards the V50 and V100 volunteering awards which are recognised by universities and major employers. Sarish has already clocked up over 50 hours of volunteering work and now has her sights firmly set on a V100 award.

New council homes
Families have been warmly welcomed into their new accommodations, bought directly from developers by Leeds City Council, this week as they received the keys to their new homes. So far, six families have already taken up their tenancies with another seven moving in to the newly completed properties at Bellway Yorkshire’s 51-home Acorn Park development on Thorn Walk, Gipton. These are the first of 23 two and three bedroom homes that the council are buying from the developer. Purchasing the new build properties ‘off plan’ from developers, forms part of the council’s ambitious plans to deliver new council homes, according to Councillor Peter Gruen, executive member for neighbourhoods, planning personnel.

New links forged between Bradford and India
College has TATA-Talent Indian automotive giants, Tata Motors, have been forging new links with a leading Yorkshire college recently as the next generation of Indian workers step into 21st century learning. Bradford College has been strengthening its international links with the industry leaders, working with their suppliers, the Lucknow Excellence Cluster, on helping to train up the south Asian workforce. The Indian automotive industry is facing intense competition at the moment, with the skill shortage highlighted as one of the key areas of concern by the Indian business community and government. Established in 1945, Tata Motors Limited is India’s largest automobile company and employs over 60,000 people. With a strategic alliance established with Fiat in 2005, it now has dealerships, sales, services and a spare parts network of over 6,600 touch points across the world. And now, with support from
British Council, and the UK-India Education and Research Initiative, the Lucknow Excellence Cluster is working with Bradford College’s Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) team to develop an appropriate skills curriculum for the Tata group. There have been two previous visits, initially a team from Bradford College set up the project and this was followed by a visit to Bradford College from a group from Tata Motors and the Lucknow Excellence Cluster. Visits to local firms were arranged and the delegation was introduced to the concept of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Moodle. Attendees felt the visit was a success and returned to Lucknow, in India, to continue developing the curriculum. Bradford College is now half way through the project and have started the professional development process of turning Engineers into trainers. The Lucknow Excellence Cluster employ thousands of staff,

so potentially 100 trainers are needed. In order for the project to be sustainable, a programme of training ‘Master Trainers’ was developed and delivered over four days by Kirstin Sawyer, Cathy Mitchell, Richard Nelson and Andy Naylor from the PCET Team in India. The attendees were drawn from a range of businesses and developed the skills to plan, deliver and assess teaching and learning. As well as the training sessions, the PCET Team experienced wonderful hospitality, with visits to famous sites in Lucknow, such as the Bara Imambara and the British Residency. The team also learnt about Chikan, which is the traditional embroidery of Lucknow.
Andy Naylor, Curriculum Team Leader for PCET said: “Working with the group was a really rewarding experience. People were friendly and respectful and importantly the food was great. “The most rewarding aspect of the trip was that the training we delivered had a significant impact on how people viewed teaching and learning. “The approach to training in India is often quite traditional but this didn’t stop them taking on board new ‘learner-centred’ approaches to teaching and learning.” Two more visits from the Lucknow Excellence Cluster to Bradford College are planned before summer, in order to further develop the curriculum and continue building the Moodle site.

Drop in GCSE results Bradford a ‘wakeup call’ charity The founder of a Bradford charity, which aims to break down barriers faced by South Asian members of the community, has urged other BME organisations to take up the issue of a ‘failing education system’. Dr Mohammed Ali OBE, founder and CEO of the QED Foundation, made the remarks after it was revealed that Bradford came second from bottom in national GCSE results. Nationally, the number of schools which failed to reach the minimum expectation of 40 per cent of children achieving the expected five A* to C grades, had more than doubled from the previous year to 330 secondary schools. 53 per cent of pupils nationally achieved at least the five expected grades, another steep fall from last year’s results of 59 per cent. Dr Ali said the latest report was a ‘wakeup call’ to the ‘catastrophic issue of the failings of the education system’, and something had to be done now to address this. “Here at the QED Foundation,
we urge local BME and Muslim organisations throughout the country to take up the catastrophic issue of the failings of the education system for our young people with their local council,” he said. “As someone who works at the coalface of unemployment for ethnic minorities, primarily for those in Muslim communities, it is simply unacceptable that Bradford has been ranked almost bottom in the national league table for GCSE results.” Mr Ali added that the two ‘pillars’ essential to the success of any community are education and employment – both things he says need improving in the city. Bradford was officially second bottom in the results table, alongside Blackpool, with only 44 per cent of students achieving the required grades. Merseyside was again bottom on 35 per cent. “We must improve the education and employment prospects of young Muslims so that they feel part of mainstream society, and have the opportunity to positively contribute,” he said. “The way the media is currently portraying Muslims as

radicalised or terrorists, [makes] young British Muslims feel they are being targeted. “This in turn, increases feelings of hopelessness and alienation, fuelling racial divides. We must not let that happen. Education and employment are key to inclusion. “It is the only real solution for lasting, positive change. Education is the only hope, not just for the future of Bradford, but for British Muslims across the UK. “Education has a transformative power. It changes lives, always for the better, and yet our schools are failing young people at the very first hurdle. “This is a wakeup call.” Over the past 25 years, the QED Foundation has supported 30,000 ethnic minorities with education and employment skills, working on alleviating poverty, disadvantage and ignorance through adult education and re-training.
RESULTS: Dr Mohammed Ali, founder of the QED Foundation, says more has to be done to ensure the next generation of British Muslims are not undereducated and underemployed

£100k pumped back into community Huge cash seizure set to benefit West Yorkshire
It is not every day that you find £100,000 in cash sat in two ‘bags for life’ in the kitchen, yet that is exactly what West Yorkshire Police stumbled upon during a search warrant at a house in Bradford. Back in February 2013, officers were executing the search at an address in Heath Road when the huge haul of cash was found. The money was subsequently seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act and an investigation progressed in conjunction with the National Crime Agency. Finally, last week, Wakefield magistrates ruled that on the balance of probability, that this cash was for criminal use and granted the forfeiture of £99,845. In other words, all the money is now set to be reinvested back into communities across the county. Four men have also been charged with money laundering and fraud offences in relation to the seizure of the cash, with two being given custodial sentences. West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson said: “Once again this case highlights the good work by West Yorkshire Police and the ongoing potential amounts which can be recovered under the Proceeds of Crime Act. “Currently half of the money recovered from criminal activity in West Yorkshire goes back to Government. Decisions on such allocations should be agreed locally at a time of huge government budget cuts. “I want to see all that money returned to the county and into initiatives or resources that will benefit our communities. “My Safer Communities Fund allows local groups and organisations to bid into a single pot of money and I want to make more cash available to this fund.”

Dr Aneesha Advice Column Every few weeks we are asking readers to pose common questions or concerns regarding cosmetic treatments to our specialist Dr Aneesha, Medical Director at Skyn doctor. Today's question is: I suffered from very severe acne as a adolescent and have developed scarring. What treatment would you recommend to treat acne scarring? Acne scarring is a common complaint and can be very troublesome, causing immense psychological trauma to clients. We are noticing adults from their mid-20s through to their 50s are becoming troubled by blocked pores and pitted
scarring that is characteristic of acne. At Skyn doctor in Huddersfield, we recommend genuine dermaroller, also known as medical skin needling, to reduce the visibility of acne scars and leave a smoother complexion. During micro-medical skin needling, a controlled trauma is caused to the skin. This in turn initiates a wound healing response, with new cell and
collagen production along with improved blood supply to the skin. This improves skin texture and tone in areas of scarring and sun damage. For acne scarring, 3-5 treatments six weeks apart are generally recommended. To begin with, a topical anaesthetic is applied to the skin and left on for 30 minutes. This is then removed and the face is cleaned with a disinfectant. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the dermaroller is rolled onto the skin in four different directions. After the procedure is completed and care cream is massaged into the skin, a mask is applied which helps to soothe the skin. Finally, a SPF cream is applied to the skin and this should continue to be applied daily for 2 weeks. The genuine dermaroller can also be used to treat facial wrinkles, sun-damaged skin and stretch marks along with general skin rejuvenation. Leeds in Bloom
The tremendous hard work and dedication of Leeds’ in bloom groups has once again being recognised with the city being nominated for a major environmental prize. Leeds will fight it out with two other contenders in the RHS Britain in Bloom’s ‘Large City’ Category, hoping they can go step better having just missed out on the top award in 2014. Other nominees in the ‘Large City’ group include Birmingham and Hillingdon in London. Also set to fly the flag for the city will be in bloom groups from Scholes and Woodlesford, who have both being shortlisted for individual awards. Scholes in Bloom feature in the ‘Large Village’ category, while Woodlesford in Bloom are aiming for glory in the ‘Urban Community’ class. Judging will take place this August before the winners are announced at a special awards ceremony in Sunderland, which is set to take place in October 2015.

Enterprising students head to the finals A team of young entrepreneurs from a Dewsbury school will be taking their business to the capital next month, after they reached the final of a national competition. The seven members of Westborough High School’s ‘Ethical Print’ group have shown they certainly possess the skills to succeed in a business-savvy environment. Since setting up their company last year, as part of the ‘Tycoon in Schools’ initiative, the students have produced newsletters that promote local activities, whilst gaining revenue by selling advertising space. The money raised by the group during a seven-week trading period at the end of last year saw Ethical Print secure sixth place in a profit league of almost 200 teams nationally, raising £5,289 in total. In recognition of their success, they have been invited to a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace in March, alongside eight other student-companies hoping to be crowned the overall winners. Headteacher of Westborough High School Jennifer Napper said: “We are immensely proud of the hard work, creativity and resilience shown by our students in this extremely tough competition. “They certainly deserve their place in the final and we are very excited that the awards ceremony will take place in Buckingham Palace. “I have no doubt this is a life
changing opportunity for the students. The Tycoon in Schools competition is just what we need to inspire young people and help them see the link between school and the real world. “The enterprising culture encouraged by the initiative, together with our recent outstanding examination results, means that students have a bright future to look forward to.” Once the deadline for sales passed, the group submitted an evaluation report to a judging panel chaired by successful entrepreneur and star of Dragons’ Den Peter Jones CBE. Mr Jones said: “I’ve been completely blown away by the standard of entries in this year’s competition and deciding who should go through to the final has not been easy. After long deliberation, we’ve chosen these amazing and diverse businesses and I can’t wait to meet them at our awards ceremony. “The Westborough High School students have developed an interesting and sustainable business idea. Their proactive and professional approach is well deserving of a place in the final.” The students have decided to distribute their profits between five charities, all of which have also received considerable coverage in the final newsletter. The remaining funds are to be reinvested so that the group can continue with the social enterprise.
The chosen charities are the RSPCA, the Salvation Army, Macmillan Cancer Support and Water Aid. The newsletter also features articles raising awareness of environmental issues. Fatima Yunus, sales manager for Ethical Print, said: “By giving our profits to charity we are offering organisations the opportunity to donate in a way that is beneficial to them. We’ve had a great response and we’re really excited about continuing the business and hopefully sharing our model with other schools.” Launched by Peter Jones and run by his charity, the Peter Jones Foundation, Tycoon in Schools – now in its third year – gives schoolchildren across the UK the opportunity to develop their own real-life businesses. After pitching an idea to their teachers, they receive a loan of up to £1,000 from the charity to help kick-start their companies. Lukman Patel, head of ethics at Westborough, said the students’ unique business model had been a huge success. “Winning this competition would give us the platform to support similar social enterprises throughout the country in partnership with the Peter Jones Foundation,” he said. “We want to help many more students to raise funds for charities, boost their local economies and help reduce the carbon footprint of their new advertising clients.”

Jewellery theft CRIMINALS: Two men and one woman have been arrested in connection with a suspected criminal network importing heroin to the UK
Heroin smugglers arrested
After a huge haul of Class A drugs were seized at Manchester Airport in April last year, three people from Yorkshire have now been charged in connection with the attempted importation. Two men and one woman were sentenced last week as part of a National Crime Agency investigation, into a criminal network, allegedly involved in importing heroin to the UK. Fifteen kilos of the drugs were found at the Lancashire airport in luggage on a flight which had arrived from Pakistan, with an estimated street value of £2million. On the day, 48-year-old Hafiz Waris Ali, of
Cardigan Close, Batley, was arrested and released on bail when he came to collect the luggage. He was then rearrested when answering bail at a police station in Greater Manchester. Rafakat Hussain, 28, of Alverthorpe Road, Wakefield, was also arrested in connection with the importation of heroin and appeared in front of Manchester City Magistrates last week. Elsewhere, in an operation supported by West Yorkshire Police, NCA investigators executed four further warrants at addresses in Batley and Wakefield. At one address in Batley, a 60-year-old woman was arrested and released on bail pending further investigations.
Police in Halifax are appealing to anyone who may have been offered a large amount of valuable Asian wedding jewellery recently to get in contact. The jewellery is believed to have been stolen from a house on Milton Place sometime between 14th September 2014 and 15th January 2015. It is not known when exactly the items were taken as they had been stored away although it is suspected that someone with access to the house took them. The stolen items included a bridal set including a gold headpiece, earrings, nose piece, temple piece, two necklaces and a ring. Other items taken included five gold men’s rings, eight women’s gold
rings, a gold locket and a gold wrist strap. PC Sally Musket of Halifax Police, said: “A large amount of quite distinctive jewellery was taken in this offence and we would appeal to anyone who is offered it for sale to contact the police. “As it is wedding jewellery it is not often checked resulting in the victim only noticing it was missing recently. “Clearly these items are of emotional value to the victims and I would ask anyone who has information about the theft or who may have any information at all to contact myself on 101. “Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

CHALLENGE: A group of volunteers who completed the run last year will be returning to do it again for Islamic Relief’s Warm Winter appeal
Warm Winter Run
Walk, run or cycle for those in need
A Halifax man is taking his own fundraising challenge to the next level this year as he completes a testing run from his hometown to Bradford with 30kg on his back, and he wants you to join him. 31-year-old Arfan Mir organised a similar event last year which saw dozens of people come together to run the 10km distance in aid of the Islamic Relief charity. On Sunday 22nd February, the event returns for a second time, and with attendance expected to improve majorly this year, the fundraising total of 2014, £5,000, is hoped to be exceeded. Participants are invited to run, walk or cycle the distance, with no entry fee required. Instead, people are asked to raise what they can prior to the event and donate either on the day or following the race completion. Mr Mir, who is a business owner by day, explained why he wanted to stage the event again this month, and how it would be one which all ages and abilities can take part in. “Following last year’s run, we were always going to do this event again and it’s great to welcome cyclists to join us this time around as well,” he said. “The more people who do the challenge, the more money we will hopefully raise for Islamic Relief’s Warm Winter appeal. “Last year my granddad even completed the run and he

is in his seventies so that shows this event is really inclusive for everyone.” Explaining more about the cause, he added: “To think there are children in some of the most deprived areas of the world, running around outside without any shoes on in the cold, puts it all into perspective. “We complain when it is a bit cold out and have to do a
run to the car, but this run will be helping those who really need help this winter.” The event begins at 10am in Halifax Town Centre – opposite Boots, with the finish line marked in Bradford’s Centenary Square. If you would like to sign up to the race, or just find out more information, please contact Islamic Relief or Arfan directly on 07772 502 543.
DETERMINED: Arfan Mir has organised the event for a second year and hopes to make it an annual occurrence

Breaking up is hard to do
W
hen a contract is silent on termination provisions, it can be terminated by either party giving reasonable notice. In the case of Hamsard 3147 Ltd & Another –v- Boots UK Ltd, the High Court set out 5 principles in determining what amounts to ‘reasonable notice’ when terminating a contract. In the above case the Claimant designed, manufactured and supplied a range of children’s clothing to Boots UK Ltd (“Boots”). Boots had originally entered into a contract with the Claimant’s predecessor in 2007 however when the predecessor ran into financial difficulties Boots entered into a temporary arrangement with the Claimant until the parties could negotiate a joint venture. No written terms were documented at the time, therefore the original 2007 agreement was adopted by the parties. The original contract had several variations made to it over the years. One in particular provided that on the termination by either one of the parties, an 18 month notice period was to be provided in return for extended payment terms. However when dealings between the parties broke down and a joint venture could not be agreed, Boots terminated the contract with the Claimant on a 9 month notice period. The Claimant argued that the notice period should be 18 months in accordance with the original agreement. The High Court agreed with Boots that a 9 month notice period for the termination of the contract was reasonable and held that the following principles should be taken into account;
• Each decision depends on the particular facts of each case • The general practices of the trade may be considered • What is reasonable notice depends on what is to be judged at the time the notice was given (as opposed to at the time of entering into the contract) • Although the circumstances at the time of the contract may be relevant in determining the common intention of the parties • The degree of formality in the relationship The Court held that the contract was short term and informal. On the particular facts of this case it was clear that the contract had no intention of being a long term arrangement as there was a provision to eventually enter into a joint venture. In practice the agreement was flexible, as Boots were constantly adjusting the terms. The court held that the 18 month notice period was no longer of relevance at the time the notice was given and the period actually offered by Boots was in fact longer than what the Claimant had previously offered. Furthermore, the notice did not come as a surprise to either of the parties due to the breakdown of communications and relations prior to the termination. Although the Court established principles to be followed in determining whether a notice period is reasonable the case serves as a clear reminder to always provide written terms when entering into a new agreement. We at Blacks can advise and assist in the preparation of contracts of all types and deal with any disputes arising.

Northone Solicitors
Don’t get mugged by an insurer I
f you’ve had an accident or injury, think twice before you say ‘yes’ to the first compensation payment you’re offered. You are more likely to get a much better deal if you take advice from a solicitor. On average, people get two-to-three times more if they consult a solicitor, according to the Financial Services Authority. Just because an insurer may offer you a sum straight away, there is no legal requirement for you to accept it, with the majority of claimants usually better off, after advice from a solicitor. However you may be thinking that all solicitors take a cut from your compensation so it all ‘equals out’ at the end – not at Northone. The Leedsbased solicitors
never take a cut from your compensation, because, as Senior Partner, Shahzad Ilyas, explains, it is not their money to take. “Here at Northone Solicitors we work hard to ensure every client receives all the compensation they are entitled to, therefore we do not operate a 25% deduction system like many others,” he said. “One hundred per cent of the compensation received goes directly to the claimant and whilst other Solicitors/Insurers/Claims Management Companies may not adhere to this practice, it is something we pride ourselves on in our day-to-day operations.” Around three million people are injured every year in accidents yet many victims do not make a claim, often because they do not know they can. To put it simply, if the injuries you suffer are as a result of someone else’s fault, then you can make a claim.
The law may be complicated, but Northone Solicitors are here to not only help you make a claim, but also get you exactly what you
deserve. So, if you have suffered an injury, make sure you don’t settle for less, and contact Northone Solicitors.

• Annual ‘Act FAST’ campaign launches to highlight the symptoms of stroke • 10,000 strokes could be prevented annually if mini strokes were spotted and treated • The risk of stroke amongst South Asians is around double the general UK’s population • Just over a third would recognise the warning signs which could mean a major stroke is imminent Public Health England has launched the annual ‘Act FAST’ campaign, which highlights the common symptoms of stroke and mini strokes and encourages people to call 999 if they notice the symptoms in others or experience them themselves. The campaign specifically targets South Asians as it is crucially important that these groups know the symptoms of stroke and mini strokes as their risk is around double the general population in the UK. A mini stroke has similar symptoms to a full stroke, except that these symptoms last for a much shorter amount of time. Without immediate treatment, around one in five of those who experience a mini stroke will go on to have a full stroke within a few days. Early intervention following a mini stroke can greatly reduce the risk of having another stroke. However, while 59 per cent of people surveyed cite stroke as one of the top three conditions they are concerned about behind cancer, new research reveals today that less than half (45 per cent) would call 999 if they experienced the symptoms of a mini stroke. Sanjeev Bhasker, comedian, actor and campaign supporter said: “Family is a really important part of my life, and when a family

member has a stroke, it can be devastating for the patient and the rest of the family. “As a community we have a higher risk of stroke than the general population so knowing the signs to look out for is crucial for us. “If you or a family member experiences any of the symptoms of a mini-stroke or stroke, please call 999, take immediate action – don’t put it off till tomorrow – it could save a loved one’s life.” Since the Act FAST campaign
launched in 2009, an additional 38,600 people have got to hospital within the vital three-hour window meaning that stroke sufferers receive the immediate medical treatment required. This not only results in a greater chance of better recovery, but since the campaign launch over 4,000 fewer people have become disabled as a result of a stroke. Professor Kevin Fenton, Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England said: “It’s very important that we continue to raise awareness of the symptoms of stroke especially amongst high risk ethnic groups like South Asians where there is a higher prevalence of high blood pressure and diabetes which are significant risk factors that cause strokes.” Dr Pankaj Sharma, Consultant Neurologist at Imperial College London & Hammersmith Hospitals said: “We know that sadly, far too many people dismiss their early warning signs of stroke and delay calling 999. Stroke is a medical emergency and getting the right treatment fast can save lives. “Through this latest campaign we hope as many people as possible know how to act FAST and help reduce the devastating impact a stroke can have.” For more information on the Act FAST campaign visit
The campaign urges people to Act FAST if they notice any of the following symptoms, even if they disappear within a short space of time: • Face – has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile? • Arms – can they raise both their arms and keep them there? • Speech – is their speech slurred? • Time – If they notice any of these symptoms it is time to call 999 A new and redesigned South Asian dance industry portal is now live and available for the dance community to use. ‘What’s my bride’s name again?’ Sham marriage exposed after groom forgets vital information
A man and woman, posing as a fake wedding couple to cheat immigrations laws, were found out after the groom had to be reminded of his supposed partner’s name. 28-year-old Zubair Khan, and Beata Szilagyi, 33, were arrested by Home Office officials just moments after their sham ceremony in Hull last year. Investigators were alerted to the situation after the registrar of the event became suspicious of the couple’s true relationship during a meeting before the ceremony. Khan reportedly had to make a phone call to marriage fixer, Khaliq Dad Khan, to ask his bride-to-be’s name. After this information was passed over to authorities, the husbandand-wife-to-be were arrested at the Hull register office alongside 48-year-old Dad Khan. Last week, Zubair Khan, of East London, was sentenced to 20 months in prison, whilst Szilagyi, of Hull, was handed a 17 month sentence at Hull Crown Court. Khaliq Dad Khan was also jailed for 20 months for the same charge. Andy Sharpe, from the
Zubair Khan
Home Office's immigration enforcement criminal investigations team, said: “This was a farcical but nonetheless serious attempt to cheat the UK's immigration laws. “At a pre-wedding registrar appointment, Zubair Khan could not even remember the name of his prospective bride. “The sentences handed out today reflect the gravity of their criminality. We continue to crack down on sham marriage abuse, and we work very closely with registrars to identify suspicious marriages. “We will not hesitate to act where we believe a relationship is not genuine. This case shows that the people who attempt to abuse the system will be caught, and they will end up in prison.” Meanwhile, James Brokenshire, the
Beata Szilagyi
immigration minister, described the case an example of the ‘tough action’ being taken individuals involved with sham marriages. “The criminal gangs who try to cheat their way around our immigration laws will not escape justice,” Mr Brokenshire said. “This government has done more than any before it to clamp down on those seeking to abuse the UK's immigration system. “Last year, our investigators intervened in more than 2,400 suspected sham marriages - almost twice as many as the year before.” He added: “The new Immigration Act, which became law last year, gives us a much stronger platform to identify, disrupt and deter marriages which are not genuine.”

Islamic radicalisation ‘frightening’ Prince Charles tours Middle East and speaks of ‘one of greatest worries’
Britain’s heir to the throne, Prince Charles, said last week that he fears the radicalisation of young people in the UK is one the greatest worries for the country. Speaking during a BBC Radio Two interview, the monarch said the number of Brits who have reportedly been radicalised is a ‘frightening’ figure and is an issue which cannot be ‘simply swept under the rug’. Asked about the radicalization of young people in the UK, Prince Charles said: “Well, of course, this is one of the greatest worries, I think, and the extent to which this is happening is the alarming part, and particularly in a country like ours, where you know the values we hold dear. “You think that the people, who have come here, born here, go to

Pioneering UK-Indian research centre launched to find solutions to excessive use of antibiotics
Researchers in the UK are set to tackle some of the largest global health problems thanks to a landmark collaboration between the UK Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Government of India Department of Biotechnology (DBT). Nearly £7 million will be invested by the UK, through the MRC and
the Newton Fund, and India through the DBT, to develop three major global research centres using high quality research teams– including scientists from the University of Sheffield and University of Bradford. One of the ground-breaking centres, the UK-Indian Centre for Advanced Technology for
Minimising the Indiscriminate use of Antibiotics (UKICAT-MA), will focus on research into antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and will be led by the University of Sheffield and University of Bradford to establish smart materials for the detection and target delivery of antibiotics for eye infections. Professor Stephen Rimmer from
LANDMARK COLLABORATION: UK-India Centre aims to minimise the indiscriminate use of antibiotics
the University of Sheffield’s Department of Chemistry, who is part of the expert team, said: “Resistance to antibiotics is becoming one of the most important challenges of our age. “A number of challenges exist if we are to avoid descent into a postantibiotic age, including the development of: new antibiotics; new diagnostics and improved delivery systems. “UKICAT-MA will establish materials for both detection, at the point-of-care, of ocular infections and the targeted delivery of antibiotics to infected sites in the eye. “The enormous benefit of detecting something which works in both a UK and Indian environment is that it will help everyone across the world.” Centre involves a The multidisciplinary team from the University of Sheffield and University of Bradford (Polymer Chemistry, Clinical and Mechanistic Microbiology and LV Prasad Ophthalmology). Much of the work is based around the idea that certain materials respond to bacteria by changing state on binding to bacteria.

These conformational changes are then either monitored to provide a signal of the presence of the bacteria or they provide a basis for targeting antibiotics to bacteria whilst reducing effects on surrounding tissues. UKICAT-MA will develop these smart materials to produce contact lenses that give colour indications of bacterial infections and systems for local delivery of therapeutics to infected ocular tissues. Dr Mark Palmer MRC Director of International Strategy, said: “With a 100-year history of strategic international collaboration, MRC scientists today collaborate with researchers in more than 100 countries. We know diseases don’t recognise international borders and that addressing health problems around the world demands a global response. “These exciting partnerships between excellent scientists in India and the UK is a key part of our international effort to pool expertise and resources and deliver research that will make a real difference to global health.” Prof K VijayRaghavan, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, said: “The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, is delighted to partner with the MRC in creating research centres which will address vexing challenges in medicine through quality science and collaboration. India is committed to working with the best in the world, for India and for the world. “We are acutely aware that the fruits of our partnership can mean better lives for the most needy everywhere and are committed to make the collaboration succeed.”

Greater punishment for anti-Semitic crimes
Urgent action is needed to tackle a ‘disturbing’ rise in anti-Semitism in Britain including measures to deal with growing ‘cyber hate’ on social media, a group of senior lawmakers said on Monday. Last week, the body which advises Britain's estimated 260,000 Jews on security reported that the number of anti-Semitic incidents in Britain had risen to a record level last year. Many of those incidents were sparked by the 50-day conflict in Gaza that ended in August. Israel launched its Gaza offensive with the declared aim of halting rocket attacks by Hamas. More than 2,100 Palestinians, most of them civilians, were killed, along with 73 mostly Israeli soldiers. The rise in incidents prompted a parliamentary inquiry into anti-Semitism.

More than heartburn Consultant urges Brits to ‘Be Clear on Cancer’
A leading consultant at the University College London Hospitals is urging people from South Asian backgrounds to never ignore ‘recurring heartburn’ and visit their doctors immediately. Professor Muntzer Mughal, a consultant surgeon and head of upper GI services at the teaching hospital, is backing the ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign, launched across the UK. The initiative insists people, who have had heartburn most days for three weeks or more, to visit their doctors, as this can be a sign of oesophageal or stomach cancer. The campaign launch coincides with results of a new survey commissioned by Public Health England, which reveals only one in two people (55 per cent) would visit their doctor if they had heartburn most days for three weeks or more. Professor Mughal says that due to having a diet consisting of many hot foods, heartburn may be a regular occurrence in south Asian communities, yet if it is a persistent pain, they should certainly contact their doctor. “In South Asian culture we’re accustomed to eating spicy food which can sometimes cause heartburn and as a result we may ignore symptoms thinking it isn’t serious,” he said. “The campaign message is clear - you
should go and see your doctor if you have heartburn most days for three weeks or more, as it could be a sign of cancer. “You won’t be wasting the doctor’s time – you will either get reassurance that it isn’t cancer, or if it is, you will have a better chance of successful treatment.” Early diagnosis of oesophageal or stomach cancer (also known as oesophago-gastric cancers) is crucial and means treatment is more likely to be successful. Around 67 per cent of people diagnosed with oesophago-gastric cancers at the earliest stage survive for at least five years, whilst this figure drops to around three per cent for those diagnosed later. It has been estimated that around 950 lives could be saved in England each year if our survival rates for oesophagogastric cancers matched the best in Europe. The UK, with the Netherlands, has the joint highest incidence rate of oesophageal cancer in males in the European Union and the highest incidence rate of oesophageal cancer in females in the EU. Of those diagnosed with oesophagogastric cancers, more than nine out of 10 people are over the age of 50, making this the target age group for the campaign.
AWARENESS: Professor Muntzer Mughal is backing the Be Clear on Cancer campaign, currently focussing on heartburn

Air strikes target militant camps in response to wanton killings MARCH: In shocking footage released last weekend, 21 Egyptian Christians are seen marching along a beach in Libya before they are beheaded by their captors
IS behead 21 Egyptian Christians Twenty-one men have been killed in Libya in the latest video released by Islamic State militants, showing a group of Egyptian Christians kneeling on the floor before they are beheaded. Footage of the barbaric act was posted online via a Twitter feed of a website that supports the IS, showing the murder of the men, all dressed in orange jump suits. In the video, militants march the captives –who had reportedly fled to Libya in search of work, to a beach the group said was near Tripoli before forcing them down to their knees. Thousands of Egyptians desperate for work have travelled to Libya since an uprising at home in 2011, despite advice from their government not to go to a country sliding into lawlessness. A caption on the five-minute video read: “The people of the cross, followers of the hostile Egyptian church.” Before the killings, one of the militants stood with a knife in his hand and said: “Safety for you crusaders is something you can only wish for.” In response to the footage, Egypt’s air force carried out a number of dawn air strikes, hitting Islamic State camps, training sites and weapons storage areas in Libya, where a civil conflict has plunged the country into near anarchy. ‘The strike achieved its targets accurately’ and the pilots returned to base safely, the Egyptian military said, as state television ran brief footage of a fighter plane taking off in darkness. It was the first time Egypt confirmed launching air strikes
RESPONSE: Egypt’s President, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, condemned the ‘inhuman killings’ and responded with air strikes against IS camps

Fears that the crisis in Libya could spill across the border have prompted Egypt to upgrade its military hardware recently. French President Francois Hollande said the country will order 24 Rafale fighter jets, a naval frigate and related military equipment in a deal set to be signed in Cairo on Monday worth more than £3.7bn. The United States on Sunday
also showed their support for Egypt, condemning the ‘despicable and cowardly murder’. “This wanton killing of innocents is just the most recent of the many vicious acts perpetrated by ISIL-affiliated terrorists against the people of the region, including the murders of dozens of Egyptian soldiers in the Sinai, which only further galvanizes the international community to unite against ISIL,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said, using an acronym for Islamic State.

19 killed in mosque shooting First in a series of ‘revenge attacks’, warns Taliban commander At least 19 people have been killed, and more injured, during the latest extremist attack in north-west Pakistan after a Shi’ite mosque was targeted by militants. The Pakistan Taliban have claimed responsibility for the shootings and bomb attack and warned that it was just the first of many in what was described as ‘revenge’. “This is the first in a series of revenge attacks ... Wait for the rest,” Taliban commander, Khaleefa Omar Mansoor, said in a video as he was flanked by armed militants. “Either Pakistan will become your graveyard, or God's law, Sharia, will be implemented.” Mansoor released the video to journalists via email and is the militant who earlier claimed responsibility for the attack on a Peshawar school in which more than 150 people were killed. Friday’s attack was the latest example of a
Shi’ite mosque being targeted by radical Sunni Islamist groups, who view the minority Shi’ites as infidels. Police said armed men broke into the mosque, in Peshawar, where people were attending Friday prayers, and opened fire, following which three explosions were heard inside the building. The style of the mosque attack was similar to that of the school shootings, when gunmen arrived in a car, set it on fire, and broke into the building using a back entrance. Peshawar's Hayatabad Medical Complex confirmed that at least 19 people had been killed in the latest attack. The killings came as Pakistan tries to adopt new measures to tackle militants following the school massacre, in which 134 children were among the dead. Last month, dozens of people were killed in a similar attack on a Shi'ite mosque in the southern town of Shikarpur.

IS target American base
Iraqi security forces on Friday repelled an attack by Islamic State insurgents against an air base in Anbar province where U.S. Marines are training Iraqi troops, Iraqi and U.S. military officials said. Militants from the jihadist group had attacked the Ain alAsad base and the nearby town of alBaghdadi a day earlier, leading to sporadic clashes in the town overnight. Al-Baghdadi has been besieged for months by Islamic
State, which captured swathes of northern and western Iraq last year, prompting a campaign of U.S.-led air strikes and the deployment of hundreds of U.S. military advisers to the country. A U.S. defence official said the Iraqi forces had stopped the attack and resecured the facility. “Coalition forces were several kilometres from the attack and at no stage were they under direct threat from this action,” the official said.
Xi heading to Pakistan
China's President Xi Jinping will visit Pakistan this year in what will be the first trip by a Chinese head of state to its western neighbour in nine years, as Beijing looks to take a bigger role in South Asia. China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the announcement on Thursday in Pakistan's capital, where he spoke of the two countries’ ‘allweather’ friendship. During his two-day visit to Pakistan, Wang also offered to help in mediating
stalled efforts to engage the Afghan Taliban in peace negotiations, reflecting China's desire to play a more active role in a region it sees as part of its sphere of influence. Afghanistan and its Western backers have been trying to bring Taliban figures to the negotiating table to end years of war in the country. Pakistan is key to the process because of its historic ties to the Taliban leaders, who have used the Pakistani border region as a safe haven.

to his home nation. The case against the men began after they published new about the former ruling body, ‘the Muslim Brotherhood’ now referred to as a terrorist organisation. They were handed sentences of between seven and ten years for ‘spreading lies’ to
help the group. Upon news of the verdict for their release, the courtroom erupted with applause. Fahmy's fiancee, Marwa Omara, wept as she celebrated the news saying: “Thank you Egypt for doing the right thing ... I am happy. For the last year I haven't been able to sleep.” An Al Jazeera spokesperson added that the decision was a ‘small step in the right direction’ and called for their definitive release. The court's decision to free the men comes ahead of an investment conference in Sharm al-Sheikh scheduled for March, which authorities hope will help improve Egypt's image - something which has been damaged by one of the fiercest security crackdowns in its modern history. President Abdel Fattah alSisi's human rights record has come under scrutiny since he, as army chief, toppled Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 after mass protests against his rule. He says Egypt faces a tough, prolonged campaign against violent insurrectionists, adding that he wished the journalists had been deported and not put on trial.
Yemen embassies evacuated
Saudi Arabia has evacuated diplomatic staff from Yemen following a Shi'ite Muslim Houthi militia's seizure of power there, joining Western countries who have also closed embassies due to fears of worsening violence. The move reflected the hostility of Yemen's majority Sunni Muslim neighbours towards the Iranian-backed Houthis. Riyadh has suspended all work at its embassy in
Yemen and evacuated its staff ‘due to the deterioration of the security and political situation’, state news agency SPA reported on Friday, citing an official at the foreign ministry. Germany and Italy also said on Friday they had closed their embassies in Yemen, following similar steps by Britain, France and the United States as the Houthis consolidated control after seizing the capital Sanaa in September.
Cyber-security irony for Obama
It may not have been a hacking, but a computer outage at the hotel where US President Barack Obama resided this week could not have come at a more inconvenient time. The president flew to San Francisco on Thursday to preach the benefits of better corporate cyber-security practices. The entire two days he was in town, the computer system at his upscale hotel, The Fairmont, was down. “There's certainly no evidence to say anything
was hacked or compromised,” said Thomas Klein, the hotel's general manager, noting the irony of Obama's attendance at a cybersecurity summit during the same period. “It's just a coincidence in timing.” Upon arriving at the hotel on Thursday night, members of the president's entourage were told that the hotel's operating system had stopped working. Rather than swiping credit cards at the front desk, they filled out paper forms instead.

Modi ‘APPALLED’ by own statue CONDEMNED: The statue of Narendra Modi in Rajkot was not welcomed by the Prime Minister who urged people to stop the construction and focus on more ‘worthy causes’
Indian PM reacts to temple built in his honour
There are many unique situations India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to find himself in, yet to have an unwanted temple built to deify him, was something he could not have expected. The place of worship was constructed in the western city of Rajkot and includes a seated statue of Modi, topped out with a wind gauge in the shape of his Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) logo. Many may deem such a development as a compliment, yet Modi has been quoted as saying he is ‘appalled’ by the statue which contradicts tradition. “I was appalled,” he said. “This is shocking and against India's great traditions. Building such temples is not what our culture teaches us.” He later took to Twitter to reinforce the message, and urged people to invest time and money into more ‘worthy causes’. Tweeting on Thursday he added: “Personally, it made me very sad. Would urge those doing it (building the temple) not to do it.” Hundreds of his followers had donated funds to help with the construction costs of the project who now plan to replace the statue with the idol of a Hindu god,
whilst others remain committed to the original plans. Modi, the former leader of the Gujarat state, is not the first person to have a temple built in his honour with a number of politicians and celebrities in the past also being singled out by worshippers. Temples have already been built in memory of former prime minister, Indira Gandhi, and former film star, now politician, Rama Rao. India’s current leader also already has a temple dedicated to him in Northern India where a priest from the Kaushambi district placed a statue of the nowPrime Minister next to a statue of Hindu god Shiva last year to pray for his victory in the elections.

Afghanistan requests slower withdrawal of troops REQUEST: Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has made a request to the American officials for US troops to remain in the country longer
2014 signalled the deadliest year of war since US troops arrived in Afghanistan 13 years ago and despite targets to halve the number of foreign soldiers in the nation this year, a request has been made to slow down the plans. Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani, made the request to US President Barack Obama, as the nation continues in its fight with Taliban militants. The US-led coalition in Afghanistan ended its combat mission at the end of 2014, with around 13,000 foreign troops, mostly Americans, remaining to train Afghan forces. Ghani now wants to see the troops stay for a longer period than initially agreed upon, something US officials say is being ‘actively considered’. “President Ghani has requested some flexibility in the troop drawdown timeline and base closure sequencing over the next two years, and we are actively considering that request,” the official said. Ghani will travel to Washington next month to meet with Obama and last month spoke publicly about US plans which would cut the number of troops in 2015 by half, and then further in 2016. He made clear he would prefer a longer timeline and said ‘deadlines should not be dogmas’.

‘Barbaric’ burning of Jordanian pilot World condemns actions of IS group following latest attack
KILLED: The Jordanian pilot, Moaz Al-Kaseasbeh, was set ablaze last week by Islamic State terrorists
leaders have Jordan’s promised to deliver an ‘earthshaking’ response after a video emerged online apparently showing a Jordanian pilot being burnt alive in a cage by Islamic State terrorists. “The revenge will be as big as the calamity that has hit Jordan,” army spokesman Colonel Mamdouh al Ameri said in a televised statement confirming the death of Moaz Al-Kaseasbeh, who was seized by Islamic State in December, following a plane crash. It had been hoped by Jordanian officials that some sort of trade deal could be made with two prisoners, Sajida al-Rishawi and Ziad alKarbouli, given back to the IS group in exchange for the pilot. However, after talks failed to progress, and following Kaseasbeh’s horrific death, Jordan confirmed the execution of the two prisoners within hours of the footage
being released. Al-Rishawi had been on death row for her role in a triple hotel bombing in the Jordanian capital Amman in 2005 that killed dozens, whilst al-Karbouli was linked to alQaeda. Jordan’s King Abdullah, said it was important that the nation ‘stuck together’ at this difficult time. “Today we stand shoulder to shoulder with the family of the martyr hero Moaz, with our people and our armed forces in this tragedy,” he said. “At these difficult times it is every Jordanian's duty to stand together in the face of crises and ordeals, which will only make us stronger.” Following the killing, world leaders also condemned the actions. “It's just one more indication of the viciousness and barbarity of this organization,” US President Barack Obama said prior to
RESPONSE: King Abdullah of Jordan says the nation will stand strong together following the tragedy
meeting Jordan's King Abdullah in the Oval Office. “I think it will redouble the vigilance and determination on the part of the global coalition to make sure that they are degraded and ultimately defeated. “Lieutenant Al-Kaseasbeh's dedication, courage and service to his country and family represent universal
human values that stand in opposition to the cowardice and depravity of ISIL, which has been so broadly rejected around the globe.” In the Islamic State video, Kasaesbeh is interviewed, describing the mission he was due to carry out before his jet crashed. The video also showed footage of the aftermath of air strikes, with people trying to remove civilians from debris. man resembling A Kasaesbeh is then shown inside the cage with his clothes dampened, apparently with flammable liquid, and one of the masked fighters holds a torch, setting alight a line of fuel which leads into the cage. Fighters then pour debris, including broken masonry, over the cage which a bulldozer subsequently flattens, with the body still inside. The video shows a desert setting similar to previous videos of killings.

Petition gathers over 30,000 signatures following controversial roast 76

CONTROVERSY: AIB’s now infamous roast has been removed from their YouTube channel raising a dispute over freedom of speech in India
Regular disputes and arguments in the world of Bollywood are often based around ‘trivial’ things, such as relationships, clothes and advertising deals. Yet when a team of comedians, roasting the entertainment elite had a police complaint registered against them, the very real, and very important topic of ‘freedom of speech’ cropped up in unfamiliar territory. It was in December that the comedian group, known as All India Backchod (or AIB), staged their roast, with the main participants of Ranveer Singh, Karan Johar and Arjun Kapoor. Organised with their permission, the four-piece comic group then began their controversial act. Despite many plaudits, there were also a number of critics who complained of the language used in the
Desi Rascals
The good, the bad, and the not so ugly
Whether you’ve been watching the latest ‘real-life’ drama series to hit TV screens or not, the odds are you’ve heard of Sky Living’s newest show - ‘Desi Rascals’. Airing every Friday night, the series follows the lives of a multi-generational cast, within the British-Asian community, who live in the affluent area of West London. Much like TOWIE and Made in Chelsea before it, the series tells the stories of a modern, dynamic and aspirational group of characters across a range of ages as they navigate their social, professional and family lives in a fast changing community. From award-winning director, Gurinder Chadha, (Bend it Like Beckham) and creator of TOWIE, Tony Wood, the series was shot just days before transmission and is one of the most active shows on social media on a weekly basis. However, as with any programme, it all depends on whether this reaction is positive or negative, and thankfully for this series, it seems the majority of critics approve. Whether it is single-parent Amita who audiences relate to, the loveable Anita and Jay Vara, perhaps Owais Khan or Yasmin Karimi, whichever one it is, the formula seems to be working. Of course, as with any programme there are also the ‘not-so keen’. The real-life drama concept still fails to win many critics over with seemingly staged story lines, despite assurances from the creator’s that every scene is ‘absolutely real’.
Gurinder Chadha says he has loved making the show and explained why he was so passionate about releasing it to the British public. He said: “Desi Rascals is a fantastic show about BritishAsians living in West London. It’s unscripted, so different to what I normally do. “I haven’t written FITNESS: Owais Khan overcame a the these characters - in stutter in his youth before entering , now Desi Rascals we luxurious world of modelling, and n at 35, says he is ready to settle dow have real people who when he finds ‘the one’ have brilliant spontaneous exchanges that I could never write. “What Desi Rascals offers is a massive burst of energy, storytelling and characters that would take me years to put together if I was making a movie. “The most important thing when we were casting was that it had to be authentic, real people who are going through real issues that affect our community, and I also wanted to show the fun elements of our community.” With romance, gossip, laughs and a whole host of good looking folks, Desi Rascals could well be the real life Asian TOWIE.

jokes and some of the material. Two of those angered, perhaps a little more than the rest, were Maharashtra's Minister of Cultural Affairs, Vinod Tawde and the President of Brahman Ekta Seva Sanstha, Akhilesh Tiwari – the two people actually trying to get criminal charges against AIB for using ‘vulgar’ language. Tiwari has even gone on record saying: “[The group’s language was] extremely abusive and it is not only ruining the clean image of the Indian culture and women, but is also misleading today's youth.” Thankfully, it seems the majority don’t agree with the two politicians, despite the video now being removed from YouTube. A petition has been launched online, with more than 30,000 signatures gathered in less than three days, in
defence of the group. Anushka Sharma was one of the celebrities who were comically targeted by the group, and she said she took it in good humour - the same response she would expect from the majority of others. Speaking at a press conference for her upcoming film, NH10, she said: “Everyone has his or her own way of looking at things and how I looked at it, I felt it was in good humour. It was not meant to be taken so seriously. “This is my opinion. Someone else can have a different opinion and that's the beauty of a democratic setup.” Anushka added that there were more important things happening in India that required the attention of the media, something I’m sure we can all agree with!

END OF AN ERA Bugatti to take its 450th and final Veyron to Geneva Motor Show
At last Bugatti has managed to shift the last few remaining €1million Veyrons, and will celebrate this achievement by bringing the 450th and final model to the Geneva Motor Show next month. Speaking with Auto Motor und Sport, Bugatti president Wolfgang Durheimer revealed the final car will be built this year, but that we shouldn’t expect to see the Veyron’s successor anytime soon. To “make the best even better” does not happen overnight, especially as the new model “must do everything better than its predecessor." Thankfully, Bugatti buyers are a patient bunch. "Many of our customers are art collectors, and they know that it takes time to create a work of art." Tipped to be called the Bugatti Chiron, the new model will be lighter, more responsive, and betterhandling than the Veyron. It’ll be built on an existing carbon fiber architecture, but 92 percent of the parts will be all-new or heavily modified. The Veyron’s 8.0-liter, quad-turbocharged W16
will carry over with output boosted from 1,200 to 1,500 horsepower, which will be done via direct fuel injection and electric turbochargers. These will provide fast-acting torque, likely to peak around 1,000 lbft, sent to all four wheels through a sevenspeed dual-clutch transmission. Bugatti expects a top speed of around 288 mph with this setup. While we await that car with eager anticipation we look forward to bidding farewell to one of the cars of our generation in Geneva.

2016 model Range Rover Evoque previewed
Land Rover has just revealed the first glimpse of the 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque, previewing a striking new headlamp signature for the most successful Land Rover ever produced. The 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque will be the first Land Rover to feature full LED adaptive headlamps when it makes its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on 3 March 2015. The powerful

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, said: “Our challenge has been to enhance Evoque without diluting its iconic design. The design refreshments give it an even greater presence on the road yet retain the emotional appeal that
has made it so popular with more than 400,000 consumers around the world.” The 2016 model year Range Rover Evoque includes a new engine line-up, new safety and convenience features, and interior enhancements all wrapped in the trademark exterior design. Tee Hee! It’s the ticklish Toyota It gives you mirth not miles per gallon and its emissions are guffaws, chortles and sniggers rather than exhaust gases. Welcome to the world’s first ticklish car, courtesy of Toyota and Mr Tickle. This giggling Yaris really does react when you tickle its tender spots and it’s ready to hit the road on a mission to raise laughs and lots of cash for Red Nose Day. As an official Red Nose Day partner, Toyota has turned from hybrid power to hilarity to engineer this strictly one-off model. Red Nose Day legend Lenny Henry has shared his own distinctive laugh with the car as part of its repertoire of hysteria and hilarity. The ha-ha-hatchback
will be officially unveiled by the Mr Men’s own Mr Tickle, Toyota’s celebrity consultant on the project, on 16 February. This will mark the start of a busy schedule of appearances for the car around the country at Red Nose Day fundraising events for Comic Relief, including the Danceathon taking place at Wembley Arena on 8th March. An initial list of appearance venues and dates is provided below. What’s as much fun as the Toyota itself is the story behind its creation, captured in a fly-on-the-wall documentary to be released on the same day the car makes its debut. If you ever thought it was easy being funny, the comic agonies of these corporate comedians
will make you think again. The short film will be released through Toyota’s official social media channels. Mr Tickle said: “I was tickled pink to be part of this brilliant idea. And thanks to my long arms and tickly fingers, I was able to help the designers add ticklepoints to all those hardto-reach places. “I hope the Toyota and the funny movie will make everyone smile and give what they can to wonderful Red Nose Day.” Matt Harrison, Toyota GB President, said: “Toyota has made millions of cars, but never one like this before. We hope the special Ticklish Toyota will help people have a real hoot raising money for Red Nose Day.”

New ‘Progression’ and ‘Junior’ models added to Alfa Romeo MiTo range
www.asianexpress.co.uk
February 2015 - 2nd Edition
Building on the comprehensive revisions made to the Alfa Romeo MiTo in 2014, the new MiTo “Progression” makes the dream of owning a new Alfa Romeo more attainable while the sporty new “Junior” recalls the legacy of the 1966 Alfa Romeo GT 1300. It may be the new entry point into the Alfa Romeo range, but the MiTo Progression comes equipped with the high levels of features expected of a premium hatchback including air conditioning; a leather steering wheel and gear shifter and Alfa Romeo’s Uconnect™ five-inch colour touch screen infotainment system with Bluetooth®; voice recognition; USB / auxiliary inputs and steering wheel remote controls. In terms of safety, the MiTo
Progression is equipped with Vehicle Dynamic Control (stability, braking and traction control with hillholder), TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring) and seven airbags, while its undeniable visual appeal is further enhanced with 15-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and titanium grey headlight and rear light surrounds. The Alfa Romeo MiTo Progression is offered with a choice of engines including the insurancefriendly 78hp 1.4-litre engine, which is reintroduced with Start&Stop and EU6 certification resulting in an official combined fuel economy figure of 50.4 MPG and CO2 emissions of 130g/km. The official 0-60 MPH for the 1.4 78hp engine is 13.0 seconds and its

top speed is 103 MPH. The awardwinning 0.9-litre TwinAir 105hp turbo petrol engine (67.3 MPG / 99g/km) and 1.3-litre JTDM-2 85hp turbo-diesel (80.7 MPG / 90g/km) engines are also available with the Progression trim level, priced from £13,770 OTR and £14,315 OTR respectively. The new Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior aims to broaden the appeal of the MiTo range still further by offering stylish but attention-grabbing looks within an affordable and insurable package. It builds on the high of the MiTo specification Progression but adds 17-inch alloy

wheels with a brilliant white finish as well as matching door mirror caps and distinctive new “Junior” boot decal, also finished in white. Other enhancements include front fog lights; a sports rear bumper and satin-effect door handles with matching headlamp and tail-lamp surrounds, while the interior benefits from special Junior upholstery, Junior floor mats and a flat-bottom sports steering wheel with contrasting stitching. Under the bonnet, the Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior is powered by the 0.9-litre TwinAir 105hp turbo petrol engine (0-60MPH in 11.4 seconds / 114 MPH) and 1.3-litre JTDM-2 85hp turbo-diesel (060MPH in 12.9 seconds / 108 MPH) and is priced from £14,870 OTR and
£15,415 OTR respectively. The Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior was inspired by the stunning Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior from 1966 which combined the gorgeous looks of the Giugiaro-styled 105/115 Series coupe with a small-capacity version of the legendary all-alloy Alfa Romeo Twin-Cam engine. Developed with Italian taxation in mind (which penalised larger engines), the Junior GT 1300 amassed 91,000 sales (accounting for 69 percent of all 105/115 Series built) and has become very collectable in its own right thanks to its purity and character, as well as the larger number of enthusiasts whose earliest Alfa Romeo memories are of that very car.
• Two new models added to the Alfa Romeo MiTo range in 2015 • Progression is the new entry-level specification, featuring air conditioning, alloy wheels and Uconnect™ touchscreen infotainment system as standard • EU6-compliant 78hp 1.4-litre petrol engine reintroduced with Start&Stop • New Junior model evokes spirit of the widely-revered 1966 original and is available either with a 0.9-litre TwinAir 105hp turbo petrol engine or a 1.3-litre JTDM-2 85hp turbo-diesel • Both models are on sale now, with prices starting at £12,760 OTR for the Alfa Romeo MiTo Progression 1.4 78hp and £14,870 OTR for the Alfa Romeo Junior TwinAir 0.9 105hp

Porsche has just announced its newest addition to the family – the Porsche Cayman GT4 which is perhaps the most anticipated new performance car of 2015. Why? Because this is the car that should finally demonstrate the full potential of the brilliant Cayman mid-engined chassis. This is the first time Porsche has introduced such a focused GT model based on the mid-engined, two-seat Cayman coupe. Sharing components and genetic spirit with the iconic 911 GT3, a lap time of 7 min 40 sec around the Nürburgring Nordschleife places the Cayman GT4 emphatically as the new benchmark at the top of its market segment. It also makes a clear statement that Porsche will continue to promote radical two-door sports cars now and in the future - sports cars that are developed at the company’s Motorsport department in Weissach. The engine, chassis, brakes and aerodynamic design of the Cayman GT4 are configured for maximum driving dynamics; yet the top model still retains the versatility and everyday utility that are typical of a Porsche. The Cayman GT4 is powered by a mid-mounted, 3.8-litre flat-six engine with 385 hp (283 kW) produced at 7,400 rpm, which is derived from the 911 Carrera S engine. Its power is transmitted by a standard six-speed manual gearbox with dynamic gearbox mounts - there is no PDK transmission option. This translates in to acceleration from zero to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds; top speed is 183 mph. The car's NEDC fuel consumption is 27.4 mpg, equivalent to 238 g/km CO2. The body is lowered by 30 mm versus the standard Cayman, and features a purposefully-proportioned brake system. Furthermore, the chassis has been comprehensively fine-tuned with many components shared with the 911 GT3. The new GT4 is clearly differentiated from its brothers in the Cayman range. Three distinctive inlet openings in the nose and a large fixed rear wing are part of an aerodynamic package which is systematically designed to not only reduce lift but also generate downforce. Upon request, the Cayman GT4 can be equipped even more comprehensively for more sporting, or track day driving. Options include PCCB ceramic brakes, shell-backed seats made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), a custom Sport Chrono Package with the unique Track Precision app, and a Club Sport Package. The interior of the Cayman GT4 is designed so that the driver and passenger can become immersed in unfiltered driving enjoyment. Sports seats, upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara, are distinguished by very good lateral support. Due to its compact dimensions, the new GT4 sports steering wheel guarantees ideal control and direct steering feedback. Technical aspects of the new Cayman GT4 are based on the 911 GT3. As a mid-engined sports car and a prime example of driving dynamics in its class, it follows the conceptual tradition of such cars as the 904 GTS, 911 GT1, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. Aerodynamically optimized McLaren 675LT stays true to the icon
The 675LT, the first McLaren in nearly two decades to wear the LT – or ‘Longtail’ name, will stay true to the spirit of its iconic
predecessor with aerodynamically optimised and dramatically enhanced styling for the McLaren Super Series.
A total power output of 675PS (666bhp), and torque figure of 700 Nm (516 lb ft) plus a focus on weight saving will ensure an electrifying, engaging and visceral driving experience. These output figures are produced by a heavily revised 3.8litre twin turbo V8 featuring lightweight components and new turbos. A controlled torque delivery of 600Nm (443 lb ft) ensures optimised acceleration and traction from a standing start in first gear, rising to the full 700Nm available from 5,500-6,500 rpm, through each of the other gears. A redesigned crossover exhaust system, bespoke to the 675LT, is formed from lightweight titanium. Two circular titanium exhaust pipes exit centrally through exposed bodywork below the rear ‘Longtail’ Airbrake. The new system is designed to optimise performance and reduce weight – another pillar of the LT ethos. Available as a coupé only, the 675LT will join the core range of McLaren supercars later this year as a more track focused alternative to the established 650S Coupé and Spider. Together, they form the newly named McLaren Super Series which sits above the recently announced Sports Series in the range. Further details of the McLaren 675LT, including its startling performance figures, will be released with the car’s global debut at the 85th International Geneva Motor Show, on Tuesday 3 March 2015.

Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to
take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Monday and Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the
country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.
SLUK Kicks off! New season, new teams, same quality action
Tetley’s Tino 4-0 Super Six Tetley’s Tino began their second season in the Leeds SLUK the same way as they bowed out of the first campaign with a resounding victory over Super Six. A double for Hasan Noshi were added to from a goal apiece by Hasan Abrar and Shazad Hussain, as they dominated proceedings to register a 4-0 victory. The Tino’s finished last season in good form and despite sitting in mid-table in the final standings, they were just six points off second placed NFA after the 18 games. Entertaining a Super Six side, who themselves had a fantastic rise up the table after looking doomed for relegation, Tino’s took an early lead and were able to sit back and control the game. Noshi controlled the game from the back, and registered a rare brace with two cool finishes. As Super Six attempted to peg back their opponents, they were further undone when Abrar and Hussain opened their tallies for the season. Abrar was in fine form throughout the game and showed the kind of performance that could help Tino’s climb even higher up the standings this season.
Injury troubles forced Super Six to field a weakened side and despite showing determination until the final whistle, they were just overpowered by the better side on the night. Tino’s are the early pace setters
in the league and sit top of the table after one game, meaning the unwanted position at the bottom is currently filled by Super Six. MOTM - Hasan Abrar (Tetley’s Tino)

The first game of this week’s SLUK action saw last season’s runner’s up, NFA, face-off against new-boys Team Newbees, with both side having to settle to share the spoils with a goalless draw. A very disciplined performance from the Newbees earned them a deserved point against last season’s league runners up, who once again failed to find the back of the net despite several good chances. Last term, NFA only scored 24 goals in their 18 games, 21 fewer than champions Hyde Park, with their finishing not doing justice to the overall team performance. Rippon Ali came closest for the pre-match favourites with a great strike which was tipped wide by shotstopper, Imran, in the opposing goals. Ali was a continuous threat but Imran had his number on the night and guided his side to a memorable point in their SLUK debut. If the Newbees can defend like this every week, they look set to enjoy a fine season, yet with the likes of Borussia Teeth and Hyde Park hungry to beat last season’s huge goal totals, it will certainly be a tough challenge. Man of the Match – GK Imran (Newbees)
Borussia Teeth 0-0 Hyde Park
Last season, Borussia Teeth and Hyde Park boasted the deadliest attacks in the league, firing in 89 goals between them, yet when facing off in this campaign’s opening fixture it was the defence’s who picked up the plaudits. Goals were expected to fly when the two teams met yet neither managed to find the net with the game playing out to a 0-0 draw. The prolific Hamza Ismail, of Borussia, and Tyler Bussue, from Hyde Park, were both on the pitch throughout yet could not recapture last season’s hot scoring streak. Instead they were left frustrated as the game threatened to spill over on a number of occasions with Bussue finding himself sinbinned alongside teammate McFarlane. MOTM – GK Akiab (Hyde Park)
Team Real 1-1 Old Bacca Boys
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Tetley’s Tino
PLAYER OF THE WEEK Tetley’s Tino’s Hasan Abrar picks up the first individual accolade of the season after a dominant display in his side’s 4-0 victory over Super Six. Tinos currently sit top of the table after one game and with more performances like this from Abrar, it could be a great season for last year’s fifth placed side.
SLUK’s other new team, Team Real, ensured it was an unbeaten start for the new boys as they held Old Bacca Boys to a credible 1-1 draw. Justin Broodie's late goal for the debutants denied OBB all three points after Sultan Khan had put his side one goal up. Team Real came into the game knowing they faced a difficult task, taking on last season’s League Cup Winners. And it didn't take long for OBB to live up to their prematch hype when Khan broke the deadlock with a fine individual goal. The quick-thinking forward should have doubled the lead in the second period yet saw his effort hit the post and rebound out of play. Just as it seemed OBB would be enjoying a perfect start to the season, Broodie popped up with a last minute equaliser to level the game and ensure his side came away with their first ever SLUK point. MOTM - Sultan Khan (Old Bacca Boys)
Jubodhol 1-0 Al Aqs
Jubodhol sit second in the SLUK table as they were the only other side to register a win last week, defeating Al-Aqs by one goal to nil. A dream debut for the victor’s forward, Ibraheem, saw him score the only goal of the game to round off a fine individual performance. Injecting pace into the game, Ibraheem was able to lift his side around him and help earn Jubodhol an important three points in their opening fixture. Al Aqs enjoyed a few spells of possession yet lacked the ruthlessness in front of goal. Last season’s match between these two sides ended in a 3-0 victory to Al Aqs after their opponents were unable to field a side. Now, with new players registered under the Jubodhol name, it seems the club could well be a forced in this season’s SLUK division one. MOTM – Ibraheem (Jubodhol)

DEDICATED BUT UNESTABLISHED BOXING CHAMPION - PETER “KID CHOCOLATE” QUILLIN By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
In professional boxing the ultimate prize is winning the world championship. However it is also vitally important for the boxer to receive the recognition and respect of a champion that can sometimes prove much more difficult to achieve. Peter Quillin (31-0 22 knockout) is the former undefeated World Boxing Organisation (WBO) middleweight champion who previously vacated the title but has now been given another opportunity to regain it against Andy Lee (34-2 24 knockouts). Quillin even though undefeated and the former world champion has failed to beat any notable fighters in the middleweight division and is still searching for his career defining fight due to being the only top rated 160 pound fighter who is aligned with the boxing network Showtime. The other recognised champion is Gennady Golovkin (WBA) who fights exclusively on rival boxing network HBO. As is the case with many big name fights not happening in modern day boxing that is due to politics and rival networks, it is boxers like Quillin who fail to receive the champion’s recognition they fully deserve. Lee is the next opponent to face the talented Quillin and unfortunately for Lee this will not be an easy task by any means.
Khalil Alam
Lee was due to defend his title against Billy Joe Saunders that would have been a British boxing epic, but Saunders has agreed to step aside and allow Quillin to step in. Saunders will now have the opportunity to face the winner of Lee vs Quillin. Lee himself is a typical Irish fighter who is willing to go to war in the boxing ring and against Quillin this will prove to be an entertaining fight as long as it lasts. Lee has proved his boxing ability by previously beating the steel chinned Mat Korobov to capture the WBO title. The Lee vs Quillin bout is an interesting prospect because both fighters will have hunger to win as Lee is looking for his first title defence whereas Quillin hopes to regain the title that he believes is rightfully his and one that he never lost against any boxing opponent. Meanwhile Saunders is also confident that he has the ability to beat both Lee and Quillin and has said “Frank's (Boxing Promoter Frank Warren) right in that the fight between me and Lee, if he defends his title against Quillin, will be a massive fight and needs to be held on the biggest stage and that's a football stadium, the fight will only get bigger and bigger, so the timing needs to be right and it needs to wait until the summer. "Whilst I've got to be patient for my world title shot, the chance to fight in New York (against Quillin) in my first pro fight in the US is a dream I've had since I started boxing and it is a massive buzz for me to show my skill in front of the American fight fans." The bad news for British duo Lee and Saunders is that their future opponent for the world championship is probably one of the best fighters in the world (Quillin) and a win against him could prove to be mission impossible.

World Cup 2015 arrives for difficult England set time down under
HOLDERS: India won the 2011 World Cup yet are seen as somewhat outsiders for this year’s competition
It may seem like it was only yesterday when India lifted the prestigious Cricket World Cup, yet the time has once again arrived for the sports elite to fight it out in hope of being crowned the world’s best. This year’s tournament is cohosted by New Zealand and Australia with the latter hoping to reclaim the title on home soil, and make it four victories from the last five tournaments. With a squad boasting talent in all areas of play, the Aussies have had a great build-up to the competition, as England’s squad will be quick to confirm. Thumping the Three Lions in each of their three games last month, they will be full of confidence as they walk out in front of a partisan crowd who will be urging their nation’s heroes to lift the cup once again. For England themselves, it looks like another tournament and another disappointment may be on the cards if the stats are anything to go by. Despite being made fourth favourite by the bookies, the numbers read for themselves in the ODI format.
Only Bangladesh and Zimbabwe average lower run rates per over whilst their average wait for a batsman to score a century is usually around three games – more than twice as long as South Africa. England fare equally poorly when it comes to the last five overs of their 50over games, with only Pakistan having a worse record. At the other end of the wicket and the bowlers also struggle in the ODI format. Not only does the side concede the third most runs in the first five overs but also take the third fewest wickets. Perhaps the most unwanted record they hold going into the tournament is the fact they are the only participants never to have chased down a 250 target to win in an ODI – something they will be looking to amend in Australia and New Zealand. However, despite all these stats and a poor record in the tournament, we can always hope. England may be big underdogs in the eyes of many, yet that could be our biggest weapon. Why not finally live up to the underdog label and show Jason can still beat Goliath in 21st century cricket.
Shayan Serves up Success England call-up for table tennis ace Back page story continued Despite only just reaching his teen years, the 13-year-old from Bramhope already has his eyes set on becoming world number one in the future and is currently ranked third in England for under-14s. His career highlights to date include finishing second in the under-13 national championships and third in the under-14 competition. Most recently last month, he topped the performance list by winning all his games for his beloved Yorkshire County in the UK County Nationals, helping his team retain their National County Cadets title. Now, with the Home Nations tournament just a couple of weeks away, he hopes to etch a new award onto his growing list of achievements. Of course, despite being so young, success hasn’t just fallen on the lap of Shayan who has had to work hard for everything he has got. He began his table tennis career at the age of ten when he was spotted by English Table Tennis Association’s (ETTA) talent hunter, Sally Shutt. Through continuous, dedicated
training, he began to rise up the ranks of the junior leagues and is now trained by Shahryar Masoudi, a former international and Level 3 Coach in the UK, as well as Sally. It takes eighteen hours of practice sessions a week to keep Shayan at the top of his game and this dedication has helped him forge a reputation in the junior and senior ranks. The talented teen even travelled to China two years ago to train with some of the world’s highest ranked coaches, whilst his family home has been renovated to include a full-size table tennis table and all the latest equipment.
Shayan’s sporting adventure often sees him travel the globe in pursuit of becoming the nation’s top player, and is now sponsored by Swedish company STIGA, who provide all his equipment and kits. Perhaps most importantly though, it is the home comforts which mean the most to the rising ace who takes his mother’s ‘renowned Red Rice’ everywhere he goes. With just a couple of weeks left to finalise his preparations for the Home Nations, Shayan will be hoping to make sure that his recipe for success matches his undeniable hunger for victory.
