Children from disadvantaged backgrounds across Leeds are being told to ‘aim high’ after the official launch of the city’s first IntoUniversity centre last week. Operating out of Harehills’ St Aidan’s Church, the centre is aimed at improving young people’s attainment in school and helping them to aim, long term, for a place at University. Staff at the charity have been helping children as young as seven with their studies since October 2014, yet its official opening finally came last week with children, parents, staff and donors amongst those in attendance. The University of Leeds helped fund the project from its first inception in the city, with one team leader overseeing the operations alongside around 15 students who act as mentors. IntoUniversity co-founder and chief executive, Rachel Carr, was at the event on Wednesday 25th February and explained where the concept initially came from. “Around ten years ago, we WORKING: Student mentor Becky Chapman, currently doing a BSc in Food Science noticed a low attainment rate and Nutrition at the University of Leeds, working with local girl Dibora at the amongst children from IntoUniversity centre (image courtesy of Adam Robinson) disadvantaged backgrounds in London and so began to operate the IntoUniversity centres in the city,” she said. “In 2010 we were approached by the University of Nottingham to expand the programme to their area and work with young people in the city. The IntoUniversity East Leeds centre is run in the same way. “Young people are supported with their homework or coursework by their mentors and during times they don’t have such work, other curriculums are taught such as philosophy and archaeology. “The young people are also

taken to Leeds University to see what life is like there and to help them aspire to attend one day.” Hugh Rayment-Pickard, fellow co-founder and director of development, added that the long term vision for the charity is to set up centres across the UK. “Currently we have 18 centres operating in the UK from London to Leeds,” he said. “What we provide is a place for children from disadvantaged backgrounds to be inspired to achieve. “More than one-million children across the UK currently receive free school meals so theoretically our centres could eventually cater for all of them.” The East Leeds centre has already developed partnerships with Little London, Brownhill and Bracken Edge primary schools in the city alongside three secondary schools: the Co-operative Academy of Leeds, Leeds East Academy and Roundhay School. Plans are currently being discussed to open a
second site in South Leeds later this year which would provide more children with the same services. Rosie Kenwood, the centre’s team leader, said it was vital for all children to know they have the option of pursuing higher education. “I don’t want any young person to write off going to university,” she said. “I understand that not everyone will go but it has to be an option open to all and that is what we are trying to tell children through IntoUniversity. “Through this charity, children, from primary school upwards, will have the chance of visiting universities to learn more about the environment and the chances in front of them. “There will also be personal mentors for some students from next year which will help pupils from as young as primary school age. “Often children who we work with are the first generation of their family to go to university so it is nice to have someone on hand who can offer advice about what to expect.”

Spring arrives with newborn lambs
Spring is well and truly on the way at Temple Newsam's Home Farm with the arrival of the season’s first newborn lambs. Six adorable lambs were born earlier this week- a mix of Kerry Hill and Norfolk Horns. And staff at the farm are now expecting a busy few weeks, with 70 more ewes expected to give birth meaning lots to see over the Easter holidays for visitors to the historic east Leeds attraction. Councillor Mark Dobson, Leeds City Council’s executive member for cleaner, stronger and safer communities, said: “It’s always an exciting time at Home Farm when newborns start arriving as well as being a traditional sign that spring is almost here. “Baby animals are very popular with our visitors too and I know staff at the farm will be looking forward to introducing the new additions to everyone who comes along over Easter.”
Mockingbird carers
Vulnerable Leeds children are to benefit from an innovative approach to fostering as part of a partnership with the Fostering Network. Following a successful pilot project, Leeds City Council has been chosen as just one of eight local authorities to bring an innovative fostering approach, called Mockingbird, to children and foster carers in Leeds. The Fostering Network has been awarded £1.597 million funding from the Department for Education’s Innovation Programme, to deliver ‘Mockingbird’ with selected local authorities. The Mockingbird Family Model has been shown to be a successful way to improve outcomes for looked-afterchildren in the US. It uses the concept of a dedicated ‘hub home’ of specially recruited and trained carers offering respite care, peer support, regular joint planning and social activities to a ‘constellation’ of six to 10 families of foster and kinship carers living in close proximity.
Diving into fun
Top diving stars from across the UK were joined by one of the world’s best cliff divers at a special invitational event in Leeds last weekend. Hosted by the City of Leeds diving team and also featuring teams from South Africa and the USA, the G Star Diving Championships took place at the John Charles Centre for Sport on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medalists Jack Laugher, Chris Mears, Rebecca Galantree and Alicia Blagg all took part alongside City of Leeds teammates James Denny, Yona Knight-Wisdom. They were be joined by Red Bull world cliff diving champion Gary Hunt, and Leeds’ newly-crowned British champion Lois Toulson.

Trustees call on Asian communities to step forward and help local charities
‘Charity starts at home’
A husband-and-wife from Leeds are urging more people from the South Asian community to get involved with causes ‘closer to home’ after being appointed Trustees of local charities. Hanif and Rifhat Malik were officially ‘sworn-in’ to their new roles with the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund and Martin House Children’s Hospice respectively, after their work in setting up and running the Give a Gift scheme. Through the project, a team of volunteers have hosted Zumbathons, annual 5k runs, ladies evenings, plus much more, all topped off with an annual Ramadan toy appeal which sees hundreds of gifts handed out at the Leeds General Infirmary and the hospice. Mrs Malik, who helped establish the scheme back in July 2013, continues to lead on many of the projects today and was approached by Wetherby-based Martin House to become a trustee. She said it was ‘imperative’ that people understood the crucial role these local charities play for all communities and said herself, nor her husband, ever thought twice about taking on their new roles. “It was by chance that we both actually got approached to apply to become trustees around the same time as each other and were subsequently accepted as well,” she said. “We both want to raise the profile of the fantastic work these two charities do, who provide a lot of support to the South Asian communities, but don’t necessarily receive the same support back.” Around 10,000 children each year are reportedly cared for at the Leeds General Infirmary Children’s Heart Surgery Unit, of which 25 per cent are from South Asian communities. Mrs Malik added: “Charity starts at home and these two causes are right on our doorsteps and need help from volunteers to continue to provide the amazing work they do. “When you get involved with a charity such as Martin House you begin to see all the additional support services in place which are not seen from the outside. The human aspect they bring to the care is incredible and gives a whole family the best care possible during some of their hardest days.” Mr and Mrs Malik added that it was not only monetary donations which they would like to see improve from South Asian
communities, but the roles of volunteering as well. The Give a Gift scheme is operated on a voluntary-basis and has helped to raise thousands of pounds for the two causes since its inception. Mr Malik says he believes anyone can help the charities by giving up just a fraction of their time. “There are so many ways to get involved with helping charities here at home, and in the role of trustees we are now hoping to cascade that message to different communities,” he added. “The two charities are so important for so many families, so I would urge everybody to step forward and follow the Give a Gift example by helping in whatever capacity you can.” Give a Gift was established as a way of allowing members of Leeds’ South Asian community to ‘give back to society’ and is led by the local Hamara Centre, with support of local mosques, businesses and education centres.

man takes charity to Pakistan Cover story continued
Osman Gondal, from Allerton, helped establish the InTouch Foundation in December 2012 with a mobile soup kitchen set up in Bradford. Since then, the portable kitchens have also launched in Keighley and Leeds whilst a food bank was established last year operating out of Manningham. After arranging a trip to Pakistan to attend a family wedding in February, Osman decided to push the charity to new grounds and arranged for a number of projects to run in the South Asian country. Working alongside the Human Relief Foundation and Muslim Aid, the 39-year-old helped deliver and distribute food in slums in Maherabadee, Islamabad, before hosting an event, with a warm meal and food parcels, for women and orphans, in the Punjab. Speaking of why he wanted to take the charity to new grounds, he explained: “Poverty happens
everywhere in the world and can affect anyone at anytime of their life. “Here in the UK, we are quite fortunate to have a system in place which will help with things such as food and accommodation. In Pakistan, this doesn’t exist. “The gap between the rich and

To take the principles of InTouch to people in need elsewhere in the world was really special.” Following the trips success, plans are now being developed to set up an InTouch project in Pakistan later this year. “We would like to take InTouch over to Pakistan to have a permanent presence in the country and hope to have our first distribution in June,” Osman added. “By using the same principles which have helped people here on our doorsteps, we hope to help other in the wider world.”
Don’t lose your vote
Wakefield Council is urging residents to look out for letters from next week with information to help ensure that no-one loses the right to vote. The Council is sending out a letter to each household in the district, which contains a list of all voters registered at that address. The letter advises that anyone over the age of 16 who is not listed needs to register by Monday 20th April. The system of registering to vote has changed from household registration to individual electoral registration (IER) whereby each person is responsible for making sure their name is on the electoral register. Registering is quick and easy and can be done online at www.gov.uk/registertovote

Kirklees Council cabinet have agreed to refer a report introducing the living wage to a full council meeting in March before taking it to Personnel Committee for final agreement. The Budget Council last week agreed to put aside funding to implement the change. The living wage, which would pay £7.88 per hour will mean a wage increase for the just over 2,000 people working in the council. Cabinet agreed that the council will continue to monitor the impact of introducing the living wage both in terms of benefits to the individual and the organisation. Cabinet also agreed that the council should be an advocate for the introduction of the living wage to other organisations in the district.
Cleaner, cheaper energy
Council house residents are set to save money, and help the environment, with the installation of the first solar panels as part of a multi-million pound investment by Kirklees Council. The project will increase the number of Council houses with a solar system installed by up to 2,000, helping residents save up to £100 a year, rising to £200 annually over the longer term. The project is being undertaken in an effort to reduce fuel poverty for local people and properties with poor thermal efficiency will be targeted first based on Government guidelines. It is part of the Council’s commitment to tackle the cost of living crisis, by working with local people to increase their income and reduce their outgoings.
New recreation space
Green fingered volunteers have transformed a patch of bare grass in Calderdale into a beautiful and functional new community space. Calderdale Council’s Community Task Force Environmental Volunteers have been working alongside staff from Pennine Housing 2000 to create a community garden at Field Lane, Rastrick. The previously bare patch of land has been transformed, with picnic benches, planting beds, fencing, willow shelters and a new stone entrance at the site. The Community Task Force Environmental Volunteers are a group of young people from the Calderdale area who were not previously in employment or education. For 12 weeks they have been working as volunteers on environmental projects like the Field Lane site, throughout Calderdale, gaining a range of skills in countryside management, construction and horticulture, and receiving valuable experience of the world of work.
Score one for charity Penalty shoot-out remembers Valley Parade tragedy By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Budding football stars from a Bradford school shot past the goal of raising £600 for a local charity last month, marking the 30-year anniversary of the city’s worst sporting disaster. Boys and girls from St Matthews CE Primary laced up their football boots in February to take part in a sponsored penalty shoot-out in aid of the Bradford Burns Unit. The event, held in the school hall involving children from reception through to Year 6, had been organised to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Bradford City Fire Disaster.
On 11th May 1985, 56 people lost their lives and 258 were injured as a stand at Valley Parade went up in flames. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the burns unit was established. Last week, on Thursday 26th February, a cheque for £620 was handed over to Bantams player, Filipe Morais, and Jing Tay, from the Burns Unit, on behalf of the school. Head teacher Bob Curran said it was the second time pupils had raised money for the unit and were proud to be involved during the anniversary year. “In 2013 we raised £1,500 for the unit with a sponsored spell,” he explained. “This time, in the 30th anniversary of the Bradford City

Fire Disaster, we chose a football theme with a sponsored penalty shoot-out. “We are very grateful to all who sponsored the children and are proud of the money-raising efforts of the pupils, as well as their penalty shoot-out skills.” The burns unit is completely funded by the support of Bradford City Football Club and public donations. Mr Tay, explained how money raised by St Matthews pupils would help ensure the charity can
continue to conduct their vital research. “All money donated to the Burns Unit goes directly towards funding research as it has for the past 30 years,” he said. “We rely on Bradford City Football Club and initiatives like this to keep us running with every donation important in helping us to continue operating. “We want to say a thank you to the school who have donated this money and well done on hosting such a successful event.”

Labour candidate steps down Bradford West prospective after 72 hours MP pulls out of race
Teen pregnancy rates fall
The rate of pregnancy amongst teenagers across the Bradford district has fallen again according to the latest three year averages released by the government. Bradford has the lowest rate for conceptions amongst under-18s in West Yorkshire according to The Office for National Statistics. There was an average of 28.9 conceptions per 1,000 girls aged under-18 between 20011-2013 compared to 31.1 in 2010-12 and 34.7 in 2009-11. Bradford Council's Executive Member for Children and Young People's Services, Coun Ralph Berry, said: “The latest fall in the rate of teenage pregnancies is the result of hard work by teachers, health workers, carers and parents in Bradford to tackle this issue.”

WITHDRAWN: Amina Ali was selected from a final shortlist of three candidates to represent Labour in Bradford West but withdrew from the race due to family commitments
The contest to hold the parliamentary seat in Bradford West took a bizarre twist last week as Labour’s newly selected candidate announced her decision to step down, four days after being chosen. Amina Ali, a councillor currently in Tower Hamlets, London, made the announcement via Twitter on Wednesday 26th February tweeting: “I would like to stop the rumour mill, I have stepped down.” Despite quickly deleting the message, the would-be prospective Labour candidate released an official statement to confirm the news, stating the disruption to her family life would be too great. She added: “However, I am the mother of two children and despite my best efforts to make arrangements to bring REPRESENTATIVE: Respect MP, them to Bradford for the George Galloway, labelled the next 70 days, particularly Labour party as ‘in shambles’ as one of them is doing her GCSEs, this would have caused massive disruption at a critical time. “I would not be able to do justice to the members of Bradford West CLP and the people of Bradford. “Bradford West needs a candidate who is going to live in Bradford and
be involved in the campaign for every moment of every day and I am unable to fulfil this commitment despite a strong wish to support the Labour Party to victory.” With the news of Mrs Ali’s withdrawal it once again leaves Respect MP George Galloway, as the frontrunner for the seat. Mr Galloway initially took up the position after a landslide victory in a by-election in 2012 and says the withdrawal of Labour’s selection was due to a ‘war inside [the] Bradford West Labour Party’. He said: “New Labour in Bradford is in shambles. Well, no change there. This is playing like an out-take from ‘The thick of it’. Omnishambles doesn't begin to do it justice. “She resigned in a tweet on Tuesday night and then took it down, presumably after the party bigwigs started trying to woo her back. “And on Wednesday she says it's all about her kids. Perhaps she looked at Bradford schools' results and decided she couldn't do that to them? Didn't she think it through before she put her name forward? “Of course she did and no-one's going to be taken in by that. Not even Malcolm Tucker could spin it successfully. The real reason is the war inside Bradford West Labour Party and she's retreated from it, badly wounded.”

Fundraisers defeat the elements to conquer 10km challenge
A group of fundraisers, aged from six to seventy-six-years-old, battled wind, rain and snow last weekend to complete the 10km challenge from Halifax to Bradford. Raising funds for the Islamic Relief charity, the group gathered in Halifax town centre on Sunday morning before running up the daunting ‘Queensbury Mountain’ and into the neighbouring city. 31-year-old Arfan Mir, who has organised the event for the past two years,
said it was a great day, ‘despite the weather’ and was confident of reaching the £5,000 target. Amongst those who completed the run was Arfan’s grandfather, running for a second time following last year’s event, alongside children still in primary school. “Sunday was a big success with around 30 people, of all ages, coming down to complete the challenge,” Arfan said. “The Yorkshire weather may have thrown everything it had at us yet we conquered it and everybody who took
part can be proud of themselves. “We even defeated the ‘Queensbury Mountain’ in wind and rain and made it to Bradford, all for a great cause.” To make the challenge even more testing, Arfan completed the run this year with an added 30kg weight on his back. He added: “At times I felt I needed to stop when the straps were digging into my shoulders and the rain was just adding to the weight of the bag on my back. “The thing that kept me going was knowing that we were raising money for people who really need it and face much more difficult challenges than this on a daily basis. “I have heard stories of what people come up against in some of the world’s poorest areas so I knew I could complete this run.” After finishing, every runner was awarded a medal from the charity as they gathered in Centenary Square. A local cafe owner even opened up his shop to cater for the drenched fundraisers, where cake and hot beverages were served up free of charge.

Frustration over new LBA parking charges The cost of parking at Yorkshire’s largest airport increased 50 per cent last week leaving drivers ‘disappointed’ with the new ‘kiss and fly’ charges. Parking outside Leeds Bradford Airport’s main terminal building will now cost drivers £3 for up to thirty minutes instead of the previous price of £2. One-hundred free parking spaces have been allocated at the bottom of the airport where people can park for
up to 60 minutes without charge, which a spokesperson for the airport said was an alternative option. “Leeds Bradford Airport has introduced a dedicated 100 spaces ‘Free One Hour Parking Zone’ located in the premium Mid Stay Car Park area a short three to four minutes walk from the main terminal entrance,” a spokesman from the airport said. “The facility is clearly signposted on entering the airport, and benefits from

an upgraded walkway for pedestrians and a dedicated and convenient new entrance from Whitehouse Lane. “The Free One Hour Parking Zone provides all passengers with the option to drop off and pick up free of charge for stays of up to 60 minutes.” However, everyday drivers and cabbies have voiced their concern at a rise in prices which makes the LBA one of the most expensive in the country. Simon Bull, a local private hire vehicle driver with SJK Cars, says the prices are an ‘unneeded expense’ for passengers when simply dropping them off at the airport. He explained: “At Manchester Airport, you can drop off passengers for free outside any of the three terminals. “There is then a £2.90 charge for ‘pick ups’ which is understandable as you may be waiting for customers or helping them with their bags. “At Leeds, it costs £6 to do a drop-off and pick up. If I have an elderly passenger in the car or a person with a disability, the only way they can avoid paying an extra £3 is by parking in the free car park quite a distance from the terminal building. “When it’s raining and windy, which it often is here, the conditions are just not appropriate to be walking all that way in.” Mr Bull added that due to a private taxi rank operating from inside the airport, he believes that the new prices will affect external firms unfairly. Emily Halliday, an operator with the same taxi rank, said she had already received calls from customers complaining about the new prices.

The relationship between Dewsbury’s young Muslim population and a residential home in the area is ‘blossoming’ following the latest successful gardening initiative. Members of the Kumon Y’all group have been working in the areas of Saville Town and Thornhill for well over a year as they attempt to build up community cohesion in their local towns. Last week, during half-term, teenagers from the group visited Charlesworth Court Retirement Home to plant bulbs in the complex’s garden and hand over indoor plants to some of the residents. After receiving the gardening equipment from a local supermarket during their Bocha event the previous weekend, the youth decided to donate them to a ‘worthy home’. Project leader at Kumon Y’all, Farook Yunus, explained: “During our event the previous week, we were donated some bulbs and plants from the local Sainsbury’s store. “Immediately we knew where we were going to take them and so during the boys’ half-term last week, we headed down to Charlesworth Court. “They were greatly appreciated
by the residents who all had massive smiles on their faces when we arrived. That is what makes it all worthwhile for us and we want to continue arranging these sorts of projects to benefit the whole area.” As well last week’s gardening project, the group have been involved in community cleanups, cooking classes and pampering sessions for the residents. Speaking previously to the Asian Express, Farook also explained further how the relationship first began. “It was more than a year ago when I was told that residents at this residential home had misconceived ideas on Islam and

therefore viewed it in a negative light,” he said. “So what I decided to do was go to the home, with about a dozen kids from Kumon Y’all and attempt to change these ideas by talking to them. “After a somewhat hostile reception, we were soon just talking and laughing with the residents and have continued to work with them over the past 12 months. “Now when I go in, I am always warmly greeted and I even get a big hug from some residents which is fantastic. “We started working with the homes a while back and as far I am concerned, we are a family.”

HEATED: Philip Hollobone MP led the debate on religious slaughter in Westminster Hall where speakers from across the political spectrum gave their views
The great big halal debate
MP argues that there was antisemitism and Islamophobia ‘lurking’ behind some arguments against religious slaughter without stunning the animal
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
The latest parliamentary discussion on the future of the stunning of all animals, before religious slaughter, led to a heated three-hour debate in Westminster Hall last week. Calls to legislate the practice have seen MPs put forward robust defences of kosher and halal religious slaughtering methods, sparking a debate in which more than a dozen speakers from across the political spectrum gave their views. The debate on Monday 23rd February was called after a British Veterinary

Sir James Paice said it would be seen as ‘racist’ if labels differentiated between meat items produced as a result of religious slaughter and those that were not. Sir James Paice, added that his visit to a halal abattoir had convinced him that post-cut stunning – when an animal was rendered senseless after being shot with a bolt through the head immediately after having its throat cut – could have a ‘significant’ impact on religious slaughter. It would be a compromise that may suit most parties in the process, he said. Mike Freer, Finchley and Golders Green MP, said he believed the public was ‘completely divided’ on the topic, and that there was antisemitism and Islamophobia ‘lurking’ behind some arguments against religious slaughter. MPs voted only on whether they agreed that the issue had been debated, rather than on whether they were in favour of religious slaughter or not. George Eustice, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for farming and food, repeated the government's preference for prestunning. He added: “The government have no plans at all to ban religious slaughter. The Prime Minister has been absolutely clear that there is no intention to ban religious slaughter. However, everyone agrees that we need good enforcement of our existing legislation.” Mr Eustice said the government would begin a series of unannounced, random inspections of British slaughterhouses.
Dr Shuja Shafi, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, said: “The British Veterinary Association (BVA) should stop fanning the hysteria around religious slaughter and ‘get real’ on the true priority of animal welfare. “If the BVA are genuinely concerned about animal welfare, we need to hear what they are doing about the duty of veterinarians to ensure the welfare of animals in the slaughterhouses, at all times, given the abuses reported.” Maulana Yunus Dughala on behalf of the Halal Monitoring Committee UK says: “How many members of the public, or indeed, Members of Parliament are actually aware of the greater abuse and longerterm suffering of animals before they reach the slaughterhouse? How many have bothered to find out about the abuses that are occurring in non-religious slaughterhouses, including those labelled as organic? “The UK’s largest animal rights group, Animal Aid, which has secretly filmed inside eleven UK abattoirs since 2009, has found ten of these breaking the law. How many of the investigated abattoirs were for non-stunned halal meat? Only one - the other nine abuses Animal Aid recorded were at slaughterhouses for nonhalal slaughter.” Maulana Yunus Dughala says the matter is less about stunning and non-stunning, halal, kosher or nonreligious, but about having good robust standards in place with regulations of those standards. “It is about providing the resources for the MHS (Meat Hygiene Service) to have enough staff that can monitor and observe the welfare of animals across all slaughterhouses. It is about introducing CCTV cameras in abattoirs as an extra assurance for animal welfare,” she said
Halal and Kosher explained Muslims require food to be 'halal' and Jews 'shechita'. Both involve methods of slaughter that mean the animal has to be conscious before it is killed, that is not stunned first, which is the usual method in British slaughterhouses. These are two religions which place great value on observing dietary laws and is part of what identifies a Muslim as a Muslim or a Jew as a Jew, not just to outsiders but to themselves. Muslims believe the rules of slaughtering animals derive from the Qu'ran; Jews from book of Deuteronomy. The name for the halal method of slaughter is 'dhabiha' and one of the certifying bodies for halal food - the Halal Food Authority, does allow electrical stunning for sheep and poultry as long as the animal doesn't die. Animals are killed with a swift incision to the throat from a razor sharp blade. The animal must never see another animal being slaughtered nor must it ever see the blade being sharpened. They must be checked before slaughter to ensure they are healthy and given clean water to drink. Then they are turned to face Mecca, the prayer is recited, the jugular vein and carotid arteries are cut – leaving the spinal cord intact – and the blood drained from the carcass. Shechita requires the animal has to be conscious and is carried out by a shoket – which involves a super-sharp blade called a chalaf being used to sever the throat. The blood is then drained. Campaigners against religious slaughter argue that stunning the animal first is kinder. Different methods are used: gas stunning, which slowly renders the creature unconscious (birds and pigs are actually killed like this too); percussive stunning, used for cattle and sheep, in which a captive bolt is used to render it unconscious before it's hoisted into the air by one leg and stuck by the slaughterman; and electrical stunning, which involves passing a current through the brain. For sheep, this means shocking them with tongs on their heads; for birds, it involves hanging them by the feet and dipping them in an electrified water bath before the belt moves them on to a mechanical neckcutter.

Researchers to build
‘Smart Trousers’ Robotic clothing to be developed in Leeds
A prosthetic hand controlled by the nervous system, robotic clothing to help people with walking, and biosensors to monitor how patients use equipment or exercise during rehabilitation are the focus of three research projects awarded £5.3 million by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The three innovative research projects start work in the spring and are led by Newcastle University, the University of Bristol and the University of Warwick working with 15 other partners including the University of Leeds. UK scientists and clinicians devised the research after being challenged to transform the design and development of assistive and rehabilitative devices using EPSRC’s creative workshop approach, known as a ‘sandpit’. Philip Nelson, Chief Executive of EPSRC explained: “These research
studies will improve patients’ lives, allow greater independence and benefit patients with a wide range of mobility and co-ordination difficulties. “With the UK’s ageing population and a rise in disabilities, this highlights one area of EPSRC investment in healthcare research which has a national impact.” In Leeds, a team of researchers will be working with a number of universities to develop soft robotic clothing to improve mobility. The initial objective, expected to be delivered in eighteen months, is to develop a ‘smart sock’, which would aid people recovering from ankle injuries who may struggle to pull their foot upwards when taking a stride. The fabric in the ‘smart sock’ will be designed to provide the force needed to get a foot into the right position. By the end of the project, in three years, the team plans to develop a pair of ‘smart trousers’ that give added
bionic strength to help wearers climb stairs and stand up. The trousers could also help avoid falls by detecting and providing extra support when the user is losing balance. Dr Abbas Dehghani, Senior Lecturer in the University of Leeds’ School of Mechanical Engineering, will develop the intelligent control system to direct when and how the fabric moves. “The system has to be able to work out what the user is trying to do; it is no good the trousers trying to help you walk, if you actually want to sit down,” Dr Dehghani said. “My job is to develop that top-level intelligent control and the systems that work out and coordinate the movement of the clothing to support that activity.” INNOVATIVE: Dr Kianoush Nazarpour, lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at Newcastle University, is leading the project for a prosthetic hand

JAILED: Wakar Akhtar began his 17-year prison sentence last week and will return to court this month on charges of fleeing the country
A Bradford man, who left the country part way through his trial, has returned to the UK and now begun his 17-year sentence behind bars. 21-year-old Wakar Akhtar, of Hudson Avenue, Bradford, was convicted and sentenced in his absence in November for the rape of a young woman. He fled to Italy where he had been staying with family before he was subsequently arrested and brought back to the UK. He appeared at Bradford Crown Court earlier this week to receive his lengthy sentence and will return to the court once again on 6th March, for a second hearing to decide his punishment for fleeing the country. Akhtar and three other men carried out the attack on the woman at Bradford’s Cousen Road recreation Ground last year. Tamseel Virk, Azad Raja and Najim Ul-Saeed, all also from
the same city, were each sentenced to 17 years in jail in November. In January, Mohammed Raja, of Hudson Crescent, and Raja Sarwar, of Tern Street, Bradford, were jailed for four years for helping Akhtar flee. Despite prosecutor, Gerald Hendron - representing Akhtar, requesting for the case surrounding the prisoner’s escape from the UK to be adjourned, Judge Durham Hall said he would see the defendant again ‘in a few days’. He said: “There are unresolved issues. I won't ask your lay client to say anything today. He has had a fairly interesting few weeks. “He will have been brought here by plane and car and will be very tired and needing to get his head round certain things. “He is now serving a 17 year sentence. He starts that sentence now and I will see him in a few days.”

Imams head to Paris Muslims told to ‘reclaim’ peaceful religion from minority fanatics who have ‘hijacked’ it
A group of British imams headed to the French capital’s oldest synagogue earlier this month to meet with Jewish and Muslim leaders in an attempt to strengthen interfaith relations. In January, four people were killed at a Jewish grocery store by an armed gunman just two days after the shootings at Charlie Hebdo offices. Both attacks were carried out by Islamic extremists. During the British group’s

recent visit, they offered support to both communities and spoke with representatives about current concerns and anxieties they are experiencing. Imam Qari Asim, of Leeds’ Makkah Masjid, was one of the delegates who made the trip and said British imams felt ‘compelled’ to visit the nation to show solidarity between Muslim and Jewish communities. “Our faith, Islam, preaches us that every life, regardless of faith
and race, is sacred,” he said. “Grief and pain at the loss of a life, therefore, transcends the boundaries of race and religion. “The recent barbaric attacks on Jewish community have affected us all in the West. They have sent a wave of fear amongst the Jewish community and concern amongst Muslims.” He added: “Imams – British and French – were resolute not to let terrorists dictate the course of history and divide communities. “It was not the terrorists who shed blood in Paris, but the Muslim worker in the kosher supermarket, Lassana Bathily, who is a hero to Muslims. It will not be terrorists but Lassana who will continue to inspire generations.” As well as speaking with members of the different communities, the imams were also taken to the actual kosher supermarket where the attacks took place in January, as well as a number of synagogues to meet with rabbis and imams from France. The Muslim population in the
country is the second biggest religious grouping, and Mr Asim says the message he received from representatives of the demo-graphic was that the community was being ‘blamed’ for the acts of terrorists. “[We] shared the concern that Muslims have suffered at the hands of violent extremists more than any other community and the deep scars of terrorism have disfigured the ‘Muslim body’,” he said. “This calls for an intelligent strategy to defeat the toxic ideology at an intellectual and practical level. “[We] highlighted some of the best practice that is prevalent amongst British Muslims and our institutions. More importantly, what were the factors that made British Muslims proud of both our religious and national identity.” Mr Asim added that despite such beliefs, the group were ‘warmly welcomed’ by the Council of Jewish Insitution of France (CRIF) during a prearranged, constructive meeting. An open and ‘frank’ dialogue took place between the two groups regarding the challenges that lie ahead and the steps that need to be taken, jointly, to overcome them.

RUBBISH: Amongst current waste found at the site is furniture, including sofas and beds
ACTION: Local residents from Oulton Terrace and Rothesay Terrace want to see the fly-tipping stop in hope of turning land into a community garden
‘Stop the fly-tipping’ Community calls for an end to unsightly mess
A residents group, who have continuously seen fly-tippers discard their waste on land they hope to turn into a community garden, say more needs to be done to deter the ‘late night droppers’. The pathway between Oulton Terrace and Rothesay Terrace, in Great Horton, has become a notorious dumping ground for all items, from furniture to electrical goods. Despite attempts to stop those committing the acts, rubbish continues to build up with mattresses and sofas currently spilling over to the narrow path. Amjad Ahmed, chair of the local Shearbridge Residents Association, says the problem has been a consistent one for a number of years yet hopes it can be resolved soon. “People are collecting rubbish from homes around here and
telling residents, ‘we can dispose of your unwanted items for a tenner’ and then just dumping it all here,” he said. “Last year there was trade waste dumped here, with a number of fridge freezers and even though they were moved because somebody got the plates of the driver, there is still a big problem. “We are working with the local councillors to hopefully turn the site into a safe place for all residents but it is just taking so much time.” Amongst the local councillors backing plans for a community garden project is Cllr Nazam Azam. He says the residents have previously excelled in their ‘localism’ and deserve a clean area. “The residents around here have come up with a brilliant proposal for the space to be used
as a recreation space,” he said. “I am very confident that they will not only get what is desired for this space but what is required and by working with the council, it will become a space that benefits the local community.” Najib Khan is another resident who has lived in the area all his life and is currently treasurer for the residents association. He believes homeowners would be willing to take on parts of the challenge themselves if the council allowed them the licence to carry out such works. “It has been a problem for a long time now,” he explained. “I was walking the children to school the other day and a brick just fell off the wall so there is clearly a lot of work that needs to be done. “Hopefully we will get some help soon and the council will grant the licences to begin work on the garden project.”

Dr Aneesha Advice Column Every few weeks we are asking readers to pose common questions or concerns regarding cosmetic treatments to our specialist Dr Aneesha, Medical Director at Skyn doctor. Today's question is: I suffer from unsightly fungal nail infections. I have had various treatments from my GP but none of them have worked. I read somewhere that laser may be an option. Is this true and how does it work? Fungal nail infections are caused by dermatophytes and can cause clients a great deal of stress. Clients often complain their nails are unsightly and prohibit them whilst on holiday and in public places. There are oral and topical medications that can be issued
by your GP, however, these infections are notoriously difficult to treat and it can take many months to see results. At Skyn Doctor Huddersfield we are able to treat fungal nail infection using our Duetto MT laser machine with good outcomes. The laser applicator is placed on the nail and a short pulse of light is released. This light is subsequently absorbed by water around the nail thus creating heat. This heat helps to destroy the dermatophytes
and eliminates the fungal infection. The entire nail, bed and nail matrix is treated in this way. The number of treatments required vary although typically two-four treatments or more are needed for optimum results. These should be carried out every four-six weeks and each treatment usually lasts 30 minutes. We have received positive feedback from our clients and results become apparent as the nail grows out.

Bradford Centre of Excellence looks to turn youths away from crime PRAISED: Naz is a former prisoner who turned his life around and now works with young people to deter them from a life of crime. He will be using the facilities with his organisation, Con-Sequence
LAW: An onsite replica court is amongst the facilities on show at the Centre of Excellence, here deputy leader of Bradford Council, Cllr Imran Hussain, stands with young people from the local area
A first-hand look at life behind bars Bradford’s leaders have taken a proactive step in the fight against youth crime after opening the city’s first Centre of Excellence in Girlington last week. The site, which features in-house mock jail cells, a court and living area, has been developed as part of the city’s pledge to do more to prevent ‘at risk’ young members of society turning to crime. Based at Girlington Community Centre, the facilities will be used by a range of community organisations, as well as some schools. Former criminal ‘Naz’ is one of the people who will be utilising the site alongside his organisation ‘Con-Sequence’ which works with young people to deter them from a life of crime. Having been handed a nine-year prison sentence for a drug related offence at the age of just 21, he has seen first-hand what life is like behind bars and wants people to understand the ‘harsh realities’ of what prison is really like. “When you are in prison you are on your own,” the now 34-year-old said. “There is no back up and the realisation of what you have given up all comes crashing down on you. “When I was serving my time, I made the decision to turn my life around and thankfully got involved with the Prince’s Trust which helped me a lot. “After my release, I began working in schools and talking with young people about the harsh realities of crime. I see it as my debt to society, to warn the next generation and to make sure they keep on the right path in their lives.” He added: “I am over the moon to see a centre like this open in Bradford. It will be a huge benefit
for a number of organisations and I can’t wait to use these facilities.” Naz also worked with the local MAGIC (Manningham and Girlington Influencing Change) project upon his release from prison in 2008, with the new Centre of Excellence seen as a further ‘step-up’ from that successful initiative. The centre will provide a permanent base for organisations to use and will walk them through the journey of a life of crime, from the initial illegal act itself, to home life, then court and finally to prison. Cllr Imran Hussain, deputy leader of Bradford Council, was a driving force behind the initiative, securing funds for its development and helping to build up the concept from the ground. At the launch event on Thursday 19th February, he said he was delighted to see the doors open and believes it will be a big asset to the community. “The reason we set up this Centre of Excellence is to
eliminate any false ideas that young people may have which suggest a life of crime can be ‘glamorous’ or ‘beneficial’,” Cllr Hussain said. “This is an innovative landmark project which will aim to draw back ‘at-risk’ young people from the cliff edge by working with former offenders, community organisations and the police. “Building off the success of past projects such as MAGIC, this is a unique way of giving the youth an insight into truths of what prison life, and the stages before that, is really like.” Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire, Mark BurnsWilliamson, added: “This is another great example of work being done in local communities to deter youth crime. “Money from my Safer Communities Fund has been invested into this project and I hope it will become a very successful one as the facilities are utilised.”

CLEVER: Mohamed Elrawemi is closely involved with the NanoMend project which aims to roll out the availability of renewable energy
A bright future
Huddersfield leads the way in renewable energy research
Research at the University of Huddersfield has never been ‘brighter’ as scientists take the lead on innovative designs for new flexible solar panels. The project, named NanoMend, is funded by the EU’s Framework Seven research programme, and aims to improve the efficiency of the energy sources, whilst also cutting costs in manufacturing to create greater availability of the panels. Its eventual goal is to develop new technologies for the detection, cleaning and repair of micro and nanoscale defects in thin films that are vital in products such as printed electronics and solar panels. Libyan scientist, Mohamed Elrawemi, who is currently completing his doctoral studies at the university, is one of the leads on the initiative. Supported by funding from the Libyan Government’s Higher Education Ministry, he is in the later stages of a PhD and has contributed to 23 papers dealing with aspects of the NanoMend research. The latest, entitled ‘Metrology of Al2O3 Barrier Film for Flexible CIGS Solar Cells’, is due to appear in the new edition of the International Journal of Energy Optimization and Engineering. Mohamed is the lead author for this article, and it takes its place in a sequence of
papers that began in 2012 with a contribution to the International Journal of Energy Optimization and Engineering. Other outlets have included the International Journal of Precision Technology, Surface Topography: Metrology and Properties and Thin Solid Films, in which one article by the Huddersfield-based researcher, rapidly gained a large number of downloads globally. There have also been contributions to the published proceedings of several international conferences. The NanoMend researchers at the University of Huddersfield have been working with Durham-based Centre for Process Innovation, a leading producer of printable electronics, including flexible solar panels. In these products, a thin ‘barrier film’ is vital to protect the electronics. But tiny defects can allow the penetration of water vapour that can degrade the barrier and reduce the efficiency of the solar panel itself. The team based at the Huddersfield EPSRC Centre have been working on a new metrology system that can detect tiny defects and will therefore aid the manufacture of roll-to-roll barrier film in large volumes.

BRADFORD BAZAAR’S 3RD ANNIVERSARY
Bradford Bazaar celebrates three years in business and we look back at the ups and downs for the popular Asian Shopping Centre. The brain child of Maharaja Fabrics Director, Jas Maharaja, who saw a gap in the market for Asian Shopping, Bradford Bazaar gives traders the benefit of running their own business without the expense that comes with operating from a high street location.
Shoppers have the convenience of being able to get everything they need under one roof. Since its grand opening by George Galloway MP, in April 2012 several other Bazaars
have come and gone but Bradford host to Vijayanthi Mala, Samina Bazaar seems to grow in stature Peerzada and Nadeem Abbas. every year. Initially launched with Word of Bradford Bazaar even 40 stalls in 2012 it doubled in size to reached Bollywood and in October its current capacity of 96. Owner Jas Maharaja said: “I had to expand after my first year as demand for a stall was incredible. I am currently looking into ways of making the building bigger so we can accommodate even more traders and give our customers even more choice.” Bradford Bazaar celebrated its first anniversary by inviting superstar Jacki Shroff to visit. This was hugely popular and was enjoyed by both the traders and thousands of customers equally and word quickly got around in celebrity circles with more celebrities eager to visit. In 2013/2014 Bradford Bazaar played
2014, Director Ashish R Mohan brought his film crew to Bradford Bazaar to shoot scenes for his new movie “Welcome to Karachi”. The film, produced by Vashu Bhagnani and staring actor Ashraf Wasi is a political satire about two Indians who land in Karachi without their passports. Soon they get trapped in a web of the Taliban and try to find a way to get back to India. Several Traders appeared as extras, and Jas Maharaja was cast in the role of Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The film is set for release on 10th April, 2015. In May 2013, Jas appointed Adrian Patrick as Manager of Bradford Bazaar. Adrian’s experience of over 20 years in retail management and in managing Bazaars in Bradford has been
instrumental in helping the Bazaar move forward and like Jas has big plans for the future. “When you think Asian shopping in Bradford, I want Bradford Bazaar to be the first name on your lips,” says Adrian. Bradford Bazaar initially opened four days per week but on Christmas day 2013 due to popular demand, launched Wednesday opening and now opens five days from 10am until 8pm. It closes on a Thursday and a Friday. In November 2014, Bradford Bazaar was granted permission to remain open until midnight on the two days before big Eid and small Eid. This is great news for customers who want to get their last minute shopping or get some Mehndi applied. Jas says: “Things are good for us at the moment but we can’t afford to sit back. I am always looking to improve Bradford Bazaar and will continue to invest in the future. We recently started an extensive TV advertising campaign in an effort to attract a wider audience and both myself and Adrian are eager to welcome you wherever you live and coach trips are welcome. “We also appreciate the support we have received locally from customers and businesses and in particular from Asian Express who are always keen to publicise our events. I would recommend that any business who needs to get noticed should use Asian Express.” If you haven’t yet been to Bradford Bazaar then make sure you pay it a visit soon.

Boycott reaches 200 days A group of campaigners, who have stood outside a Bradford McDonalds every evening for twohundred days, are celebrating their latest milestone as they show no signs of stopping any time soon. The ‘Passion 4 Palestine’ group have gathered outside the Leeds Road fast food establishment every night since the beginning of August 2014. According to the group, in excess of 2,200 cars have turned away from the site since their campaign began, with more than 5,000 people opting to eat elsewhere. The members are campaigning against the fast food giants due to what they describe as ‘unethical policies and relations’ with Israel, whose relations with Palestine escalated in the Summer of 2014. More than 1,500 Palestinian civilians were killed by Israeli air strikes during the conflict with Gaza.

Faisal Mohammed, a spokesperson for the Passion 4 Palestine group, insists his team will continue their demonstrations until ‘justice’ is delivered. “The mainstream media put the Genocide of over two-thousand Palestinians away on the history shelf and diverted people’s attention away from this horrendous crime,” he said. “We refuse to see the genocide as history; we see it as a war crime which hasn't seen justice served to those perpetrators who committed it. “Today, Palestinians are still being killed. Thousands are still injured, homeless and more land is being stolen every day. “We must not forget the ongoing struggle and suffering of Palestinians and must continue creating awareness about these
Passion 4 Palestine protestors hit latest milestone issues and show support in every way we can.” He added: “We will continue to show our support and create awareness for the Palestinian people and continue with this boycott. This has been a very successful campaign and we will have many more to come.” Despite some critics in the early days of ‘over-zealous’ protestors
who were described as ‘harassing’ customers, the group has worked hard to improve its image. Now carrying out charity work, and distributing leaflets and information to people on the streets, Mr Mohammed explained what the group was doing to spread information. “People have the right to be informed,” he said. “Customers who
chose to boycott were provided with leaflets and informed about the Unethical policies and relations McDonalds has with Israel. “Alongside information about McDonalds, other companies that support, fund or trade with Israel, and its crimes, were mentioned and news about what is taking place in Palestine was given.”

Drivers question latest bus lane regulations
‘Call’ for access Private hire vehicle (PHV) drivers in Leeds have questioned why access to one of the city’s busiest streets has been restricted in a move which threatens to ‘severely hamper trade’. Call Lane, near the Corn Exchange in the city centre, hosts a number of late night bars which get exceedingly busy in the evening, especially during weekend hours. Previously, all vehicles were allowed access to the street with no restrictions in place. However, new legislation, rubber-stamped last week, now only allows for Hackney Carriage Vehicles and buses to access the lane at set hours - between Friday and Monday, from 10pm until 5am. Dale Askham, director of the Leeds Private Hire Drivers Association (LPHDA), questioned the decision which he believes will not only effect drivers but also passengers. “There is nowhere legally around here that a PHV driver can pick up passengers anymore,” he said. “This is a restriction of our trade and something which is exceedingly causing drivers
problems. We offer the same services as hackney carriages and buses yet all new legislation seems to be hampering only PHV drivers.” He added: “How are they supposed to drop off people with disabilities? We have not been consulted about any of these new regulations and it is going to affect business massively.” The new legislation arrives just weeks after a petition was handed to Leeds City Council on behalf of PHV drivers which requested access to bus lanes throughout the city for all cabbies. More than 900 signatures of PHV drivers were gathered and a verdict has yet to be given to those spearheading the appeal. A new request has also recently been made this past week from the LPHDA to question the decision of introducing bus lane operations on Call Lane. Mr Askham continued: “Currently, there are around 5,000 PHV drivers in the city compared to approximately 500 hackney carriage vehicles. There are more drivers in private hire than buses and hackney carriages combined so restricting access to
so few appears unjustified.” Tasadaq Hussain has been a PHV driver in the city for more than ten years and has seen a number of new legislations introduced since beginning his role. He added: “Leeds is seen as the financial hub of the north yet Leeds City Council is restricting crucial public services. “If they want more people to visit the city, then why are they making it so hard for public transport to be available to those who need it most?” A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “After careful consideration we have taken the decision with the support of traders and West Yorkshire Police to only permit access along Call Lane to buses and Hackney Carriages from 10pm -5am as part of a trial period. “This is to ensure that the traffic network in the vicinity of Call Lane remains free-flowing and unobstructed. “Vehicle numbers on Call Lane will continue to be closely monitored and the police will have the option to close the street to traffic at any time if any issues arise.”
APPEAL: LPHDA director, Dale Askham, and PHV driver, Tasadaq Hussain, stand at the site of Leeds’ newest bus lane
BUSY: Call Lane, located near the Corn Exchange, only allows hackney carriages and buses to travel on the road in certain hours between Friday and Monday

Retrospective Reliance A
negligent misstatement exists when one party owes a duty of care to another party and carelessly makes a false statement on which the other party relies and as a result suffers a loss. The fundamental aspect for a Claimant to succeed in bringing a claim for negligent misstatement is that there must be reliance on a statement which has caused a loss. The Court of Appeal, in overturning the initial decision in the Technology and Construction Court confirmed in the case of Hunt and others -v- Optima (Cambridge) Ltd, Strutt & Parker and others that reliance on a negligent misstatement cannot be retrospective. In this case, Optima (the developer landlord) had built a block of flats in Peterborough and had engaged with property consultants, Strutt & Parker (“S&P”), to conduct a survey on the flats and produce certificates attesting the satisfactory construction of the flats. Before buying the flats the purchasers were told that the certificates to be supplied by S&P were similar to a guarantee provided by the National House Building Council when there is a new development of houses for example. A draft copy was provided to the purchasers who were told that they would receive the issued certificates on completion.
Soon after the purchasers had moved into their new flats, to their horror, they became noticeably defective. Problems included leaking roofs, defective plumbing and drainage issues. A total of 19 defects were identified in one individual flat. A number of purchasers brought a claim against S&P for negligently carrying out the surveys on the flats and recording incorrect information in the certificate. The key issue for the Court to decide was whether the purchaser, when purchasing the lease, relied on the certificate which was not issued until after the contracts had exchanged. Initially the Court held in favour of the purchasers, finding that it was immaterial that the certificates were received after the exchange of contracts. S&P were found to be in breach of their duty of care as the certificates were held to be enforceable warranties. An appeal from this decision was allowed by the Court of Appeal who considered the following; (1) Were the certificates enforceable warranties? No words such as ‘warranty’ or ‘promise’ were used in the wording of the certificate. The certificates were negotiated by professionals who knew the industry well and should have known the difference between a warranty and a mere representation. The Court of Appeal held that the certificate could not be construed as a warranty. (2) Was there a negligent misstatement? The certificate was only a draft copy when relied upon by the purchasers. The Court of Appeal held that a document which was unsigned and unissued was capable of being amended at any time and could in fact not be issued at all. A document bearing such flexibility could not incur liability for negligent misstatement. The case highlights that purchasers of a lease need to be diligent when considering all documentation before signing any contract. All documents relied on should be their final form with clear wording of their intentions. We at Blacks deal with all aspects of property law acting for both landlords and tenants in all matters arising in respect of leases as well as dealing with claims for negligent misstatement.

India’s rail network aims to get back on track India will raise railway freight rates on coal, iron ore and steel from 1st April to help fund an expansion of its well-worn network, a move that threatens to raise costs for local steel makers at a time when demand is weak and imports are surging. The government plans to increase its annual freight carrying capacity to 1.5billion tonnes from one-billion tonnes, in part with the funds from the higher rates, railways minister Suresh Prabhu said in a speech presenting his ministry's budget for the fiscal year starting on 1st April.
Prabhu did not say by when the expansion would be completed. The rates for coal transport will rise by 6.3 percent, while those for iron ore and steel will increase 0.8 percent. Charges for the transport of urea and grains will also go up 10 per cent. But there will be no change in passenger fares. Over the next five years, India will raise investment in its overloaded railway network to 8.5trillion rupees (£88billion), the government said on Thursday.

Gaza doctors return A group of UK-funded NHS surgeons have returned from treating war-wounded patients in Gaza six months after the temporary ceasefire was agreed. The volunteer doctors visited the region regularly for the past six months to carry out surgery on patients with severe injuries and train doctors in Gaza hospitals to improve their surgical capacities. The team were deployed by Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), working with NGO Ideals, with £724,000 in funding from the Department for International Development (DFID). The funding is part of DFID’s £37 million package of assistance in response to the 2014 Gaza crisis. Justine Greening, International Development Secretary, said: “Six months on from the temporary ceasefire the situation in Gaza remains dire. Around 108,000 people were left homeless by the conflict and over 11,000 Palestinians were injured. “The vital work of these British surgeons is an important part of the UK effort to help the people of Gaza rebuild their lives. However none of the underlying causes of the conflict have yet been addressed. The UK is playing its part to help those caught up in the conflict, but it is clear the need for a political solution for Gaza is more urgent than ever.” Amongst the patients who were treated by the British doctors, was nine-year-old Weam. MISSING: The three girls were picked up on CCTV at the airport on Tuesday 17th February
The search for three teenage girls, who are believed to have fled to Syria last week to join up with Islamic extremists, continues this week as the family of a previous ‘jihadi bride’ points the finger at UK security forces. 16-year-old, Kadiza Sultana, and 15-yearolds, Shamima Begum and Amira Abase, boarded a Turkish Airlines flight on Tuesday 17th February at Gatwick Airport, arriving

in Istanbul at around 6.40pm local time. They left their homes in East London before 8am that morning, providing their families with plausible reasons as to why they would be out for the day. However, the girls, who all attended Bethnal Green Academy and were described as ‘straight A students’ actually met and travelled to the airport where CCTV images showed them boarding the plane. It has now been reported that one of the girls, Begum, had been in contact with 20year-old Aqsa Mahmood, from Glasgow, who went to Syria in 2013 to support the extremists. The two spoke via Twitter, with the teen writing, ‘Follow me so I can dm (direct message) you back’ on 15th February. Ms Mahmood’s family released a statement last weekend to condemn the actions of their relative who they labelled a ‘disgrace’ for her supposed role in recruiting the girls for the Islamic State (IS). “You are a disgrace to your family and the people of Scotland, your actions are a perverted and evil distortion of Islam,” said the statement. “You are killing your family every day with your actions, they are begging you to stop if you ever loved them.” They added: “However, the security services have serious questions to answer. “Aqsa's social media has been monitored since she disappeared over a year ago, yet despite alleged contact between the girls and Aqsa, they failed to stop them from leaving the UK to Turkey, a staging post for Syria.” Counter Terrorism Command (SO15) Commander Richard Walton said authorities were now working hard to ensure the girls returned home safely to their families in the UK. He said: “We are extremely concerned for the safety of these young girls and would urge anyone with information to come forward and speak to police. Our priority is the safe return of these girls to their families. “We are reaching out to the girls using the Turkish media and social media in the hope that Shamima, Kadiza and their friend hear our messages, hear our concerns for their safety and have the courage to return now, back to their families who are so worried about them.”

Sikh regiment could return to UK Army chief ‘looking into’ possibility of return
A minister in the House of Commons says Britain’s army chief should look into reintroducing a Sikh regiment in the forces. Mark Francois, Minister of State for the Armed Forces, said the Chief of the General Staff is currently examining the possibility of a Sikh unit, which would inherit the ‘proud traditions’ of previous regiments. An attempt to resurrect the unit in 2007 was abandoned by the Ministry of Defence in a fear that

Beginning of end of United Kingdom?
Britain set out plans on Friday to give Wales greater powers, including to issue bonds and control fracking licences, in a further step to dismantle its centralised system of government. With just over two months until a national election, the issue of devolution to the United Kingdom's constituent parts has risen to the fore after a last-ditch promise to hand more powers to Scotland helped swing a close referendum in September. That resulted in a deal for the biggest transfer of powers to Scotland from London since 1999, when a Scottish parliament was set up, and spurred demands for similar powers from England, Wales and Northern Ireland which critics fear could trigger the beginning of the end of the United Kingdom. “We are delivering on devolution in every part of the UK,” Prime Minister David Cameron said on Friday. “We want to deliver new powers to Wales so that more decisions are taken closer to the people and give greater responsibility to the Welsh Assembly. “That means those who spend taxpayers' money must be more responsible for raising it.”

ILLEGAL: Evidence of the Saund’s activities were presented in front of Birmingham Crown Court including images of cannabis farms and giant wads of cash
£35m cannabis empire crashes down
Two men who oversaw a cannabis farm network across the Midlands netting them a multi-million pound fortune - are now behind bars after West Midlands Police brought their drugs empire to an immediate halt. Nirmal and Darryl Saund posed as respected businessmen - operating out of a Birmingham company called The Cayman Group - to strike rental deals on industrial units and residential addresses in Northamptonshire, Herefordshire, Leicester and Shropshire. But having secured leases, the pair kitted out the premises with sophisticated hydroponics equipment and employed members of the Vietnamese community to act as live-in growers. Between September 2012 and June last year, when they were arrested by West Midlands Police, it’s estimated they had netted around £35million in drugs profits. West Midlands Police coordinated a major investigation into the family following cannabis factory finds by police forces across the Midlands. Detectives ran surveillance operations on some sites, uncovered aliases used by the drugs barons created using fake passports and

utility bills, and uncovered bank accounts used to stash drugs cash having followed Vietnamese ‘staff’ on bank runs. And crucially, through sophisticated high-tech checks, they were able to trace the group to their headquarters in Baltimore Road, Handsworth Wood. Nirmal Saund, 51, from Skip Lane in Walsall, admitted conspiracy to supply drugs whilst 31-year-old
Darryl, from Foxcote Drive in Shirley, denied being involved but was found guilty after a trial. At Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday 18th February, both men were jailed - for 10 years and six months, and nine years respectively. In total, six members of the Vietnamese community were also arrested from cannabis farms run by the Saunds, some of whom went on to be jailed.

MONUMENT: The statue of Mahatma Gandhi will mark the 100th anniversary of his return to India from South Africa
Gandhi in London
Iconic statue to be unveiled next month British Prime Minister David Cameron has said the highly anticipated unveiling of London’s latest Mahatma Gandhi statue will take place on Saturday 14th March, in the historic Parliament Square. The bronze sculpture will stand alongside current iconic figures, Nelson Mandela and Winston Churchill, as it is unveiled by Indian finance minister, Arun Jaitley. It will be the focal point for the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Gandhi's return to India from South Africa to kick-start India's independence movement. The announcement of its unveiling date came after the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust surpassed the £1million mark in
donations, with steel tycoon, Lakshmi N Mittal, adding £100,000 and the Infosys Board, chaired by K V Kamath, donating a further £250,000 in the last few weeks. “The statue in Parliament Square not only marks his (Gandhi’s) huge importance in the history of both our countries, but will enrich the firm bond of friendship between the world’s oldest democracy and its largest,” Cameron said in a statement. “Mahatma Gandhi is an inspiration. His approach of non-violence will resonate forever as a positive legacy not just for the UK and India, but the world over. “He was a man of great insight and many of his observations remain as fresh and relevant today as when he first made them that ‘we should be the change we wish to see in the world’ is timeless advice, well worth following.” The sculpture will portray the Father of the Indian Nation draped in a shawl based on pictures from his last visit to the UK in 1931. Created by leading British sculptor Philip Jackson, he has been sculpting the statue since Chancellor George Osborne and Leader of the House of Commons, William Hague, announced the plans for the memorial in July 2014. Lord Meghnad Desai, the founderchair of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, said it was ‘great’ to see a monument ‘honouring Gandhi in one of his favourite cities’. “He is the first Indian and the only person honoured with a statue in the Square who never held public office,” Lord Desai said. “Generous donors have contributed sums from a pound up to hundreds of thousands of pounds from the UK, India and around the world. “On behalf of the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust we thank all who made it possible for us to exceed our target of a million pounds within six months. As Gandhi said 'If the cause is right the means will come'.” PRAISE: Prime Minister David Cameron labelled Gandhi an ‘inspiration’ with the statue further strengthening relationships between the UK and India

Jihadi John
‘UNMASKED’ Londoner behind mask of IS killer
UNMASKED: The infamous ‘Jihadi John’ has been named as Brit Mohammed Emwazi
One of Islamic State’s most wanted men, dubbed ‘Jihadi John’, has been identified as Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwaitiborn British computer programming graduate from London. Known to security services prior to his notoriety with IS, Emwazi has been seen on videos published online where he decapitates hostages, often dressed in orange jumpsuits, including Americans, Britons and Syrians. The 26-year-old has been seen dressed entirely in black, covering all but his eyes and the bridge of his nose, with a holster under his arm whenever he was shown in the footage. His image
became a symbol of the brutality of IS and reinforced Emwazi’s position as one of the world’s most wanted men. Hostages reportedly called him John as he and other Britons in Islamic State had been nicknamed the Beatles. Emwazi was born in Kuwait but came to Britain aged six and graduated with a computer programming degree from the University of Westminster. He came to the attention of Britain's main domestic intelligence service, MI5, according to an account given by Asim Qureshi, the research director of the Cage charity that campaigns for those detained on terrorism
charges. Emwazi, a fluent Arabic speaker, said MI5 had tried to recruit him and then prevented him from travelling abroad, forcing him to flee abroad without telling his family, Qureshi told a news conference in London. Mr Qureshi said he believed the Brit was radicalised after security services harassed him and alienated him saying 'the man I knew would never hurt a single person’. He said: “When are we going to finally learn that when we treat people as if they're outsiders, they are going to feel like outsiders and they will look for belonging elsewhere.” ‘Jihadi John’ rose to notoriety in August 2014 when a video appeared showing a masked man raging against the United States before apparently beheading US citizen James Foley off camera. Intelligence services in the United States and Britain used a variety of investigative techniques including voice and facial recognition as well as interviews with former hostages to identify the man, intelligence sources said.
SUPPORT: Asim Qureshi described Emwazi as ‘extremly kind, gentle and beautiful young man’ before he was ‘alienated’ and ‘harassed’ by MI5

Officials in the country said around 81million Afghanis (the currency of Afghanistan) was taken in the raid with no CCTV footage of the culprits who took any films with them. Footage following the theft shows the bank's vault had been cleaned out, but investigators were waiting to gain access before confirming the total missing, a bank spokesperson said. “Yesterday we could only open one of the treasury's doors. We hope to open the next one today,” the central bank director for Afghanistan's southwestern region, Fazel Ahmad Azimi, said. Weak regulation undermines confidence in Afghanistan's fragile banking system, which has yet to fully recover from a 2010 scandal over a bank that collapsed triggering a financial crisis. An international financial watchdog last year threatened to place Afghanistan on a blacklist and has since warned it needs to do more to enforce laws to regulate its banking sector. The Kandahar raid is believed to have been carried out by a senior official at the bank, an employee of nine years, with the help of his son and brother-in-law who were also on the payroll, according to Azimi. The robbery at the branch in Spin Boldak near the border with Pakistan was discovered on Thursday and investigators believed the group has escaped to Pakistan. The group had removed CCTV recordings before fleeing to Pakistan, Azimi said, but investigators were hopeful that footage might be recovered from the memory chip of the security cameras.

Mr Patel told the officers ‘No English’ and pointed towards his son’s home yet

As the police attempted to pick him up, his knees buckled and he was helped to the floor, with audio and video footage showing the whole incident from one of the police cars which arrived on scene. The governor's letter expressed Mr Bentley's: “sincere apology for this tragic incident to your government, Mr Patel, and the citizens of India who reside and work in our state.” It continued: “I deeply regret the unfortunate use of excessive force by the Madison Police Department ... and for the injuries sustained by Mr Patel.” The Madison police chief

Meanwhile, officer Eric Parker – the man involved in the incident – has since pleaded not guilty to assaulting Mr Patel and faces trial on 29th April. Since the event, donors have given around £120,000 on a gofundme.com to pay medical expenses for Mr Patel, who does not have health insurance.

Peace talks a ‘possibility’ Senior officials in Afghanistan have suggested that the country’s Taliban are willing to open peace talks with the country’s capital, Kabul, as early as next month, despite denial from members of the extremist group. The reports breathed fresh hope into the country’s peace efforts following the withdrawal of mostly US-led troops last year, whilst also signalling a huge boost for Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani. It is believed that the renewed push for negotiations appeared to be driven by evolving relationships between Afghanistan, Pakistan and China, which recently offered to help broker talks. On Thursday, a senior Pakistani military official said Pakistan's army chief, General Raheel Sharif, told Ghani during a visit this week that the Taliban were willing to begin negotiations as early as March. “They have expressed their willingness and there will be progress in March. Now many things are with the Afghans and they are serious.” However, despite the positive suggestions, Taliban represent-atives, including official spokesperson, Zabiullah Mujahid, said the group would only speak with the US and not the Kabul government. A senior member of the Afghan Taliban claimed by telephone from Qatar that their negotiators held a first round of talks with US officials in Qatar on Thursday, something the US this time denied. VENUE: Roopa will play at the Leeds College of Music on Saturday 7th March
Worldrenowned sitarist plays in Leeds TALENT: Roopa Panesar was trained by sitar maestro, Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE, and is known around the world
One of the UK’s leading sitar players will be plying her trade in Leeds next month as crowds are treated to a selection of melodious tunes in the city centre. Leicester-born Roopa Panesar will be performing as part of South Asian Arts-uk’s (SAA-uk) ‘Women in Arts’ programme which comes to a climatic end on Saturday 7th March. The talented musician broke the trend in the classical world of Indian music when she arrived on the scene, building up a reputation as one of the world’s finest female sitar players, and is one of only few UK acts to be recognised in India. Trained by sitar maestro and educationalist, Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE, her most recent tour of the South Asian country saw her sell out venues in Mumbai, New Delhi and Kolkata whilst her presence in England also continues to grow. Over the last year, SAA-uk has recognised the women of the Indian music community by holding a series of performances across Yorkshire, celebrating their musical achievements. The inclusion of Roopa’s performance on the final night of the project is a ‘fitting end’ according to SAA-uk chief executive, Keranjeet Kaur Virdee. She said: “Our Women in Arts series
wouldn’t be complete without a performance from Roopa, and what better way to end the programme than by inviting her to share her talent with the Leeds College of Music. “Roopa is regarded as one of the best Sitar players to come out of the UK and, coupled with Shri Bhupinder Singh Chaggar’s talents on Tabla the evening promises to be a fantastic event.” SAA-uk’s Women in Arts programme has seen varied performances over the last year, including children’s stories and shows about the oppression of women. Keranjeet added: “The programme has proved a huge success over the last twelve months, with performances from lots of inspiring women really showing the value of female performers. “SAA-uk plays an important role in celebrating these women’s wonderful talents and we are delighted that so many have enjoyed the programme. “The arts are a wonderful mechanism for joy and happiness that enables people to come together. We are thrilled to be a part of it.” The sitar has been a prominent instrument in Indian Classical and Hinduistic music since the 16th century. The instrument has also become popular in the West with bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones adopting the rich, exotic sound, with ‘Norwegian Wood’ by The Beatles, becoming the first song to introduce the plucked string instrument to the Western World in 1965. Tickets can be purchased directly from Leeds College of music or by visiting www.lcm.ac.uk

Luxury carmaker says that work is underway to produce an all-terrain high-bodied vehicle (don’t let them catch you saying SUV), which will cost around £200,000.
Rolls Royce plans to launch high four-wheel drive vehicle by 2018… but don’t call it a SUV!
By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk
It seems that Rolls Royce is joining rivals Bentley and Jaguar in catering to demand for upmarket 4x4 models. The 111-year-old marque, owned by German car firm BMW, said customers had asked it to add the as-yet
unnamed vehicle to its existing saloon models – the Phantom, Ghost and Wraith. But without mentioning SUV, 4x4 or other names normally used for off-road vehicles, Rolls-Royce’s bosses said in an open letter that they would “produce a high-bodied car that could cross any terrain”.

Luxury 4x4 Rolls Royce plans to launch high four-wheel drive vehicle by 2018… but don’t call it a SUV!
Continued from page 81
Rolls Royce chairman, Peter Schwarzenbauer and chief executive Torsten Müller-Ötvös said in a joint statement that the new car was not a radical departure for the venerable brand and that the move reflected Rolls-Royce’s rugged roots. “Rolls-Royces conveyed pioneers and adventurers like Lawrence of Arabia across the vastness of
unexplored deserts and over mountain ranges. In other parts of the world including Australia, India and the Americas, Rolls-Royces carried their owners over challenging terrain with absolute reliability and comfort. Rest assured, we are creating a motor car in the greatest traditions of our marque.” A spokesman said: “The words sport and utility don’t feature in the RollsRoyce lexicon and that was why it was important not to say those words and nor will we ever.” At least three years of planning by the Rolls-Royce’s team have resulted in a design for the car, which will hit forecourts in 2017 or 2018. The company has been wary of undermining its brand but has seen competitors such as Porsche, Bentley and Jaguar go ahead with plans for their own models. An industry analyst said that global sales of premium and luxury SUVs has risen from around 397,000 in 2000 to 1.2 million in 2014 and is forecasted to rise to more than 1.3 million by 2020.

END OF AN ERA
Bugatti to take its 450th and final Veyron to Geneva Motor Show
At last Bugatti has managed to shift the last few remaining €1million Veyrons, and will celebrate this achievement by bringing the 450th and final model to the Geneva Motor Show next month. Speaking with Auto Motor und Sport, Bugatti president Wolfgang
Durheimer revealed the final car will be built this year, but that we shouldn’t expect to see the Veyron’s successor anytime soon. To “make the best even better” does not happen overnight, especially as the new model “must do everything better than its predecessor." Thankfully, Bugatti buyers are a
patient bunch. "Many of our customers are art collectors, and they know that it takes time to create a work of art." Tipped to be called the Bugatti Chiron, the new model will be lighter, more responsive, and better-handling than the Veyron. It’ll be built on an existing carbon fiber architecture, but
92 percent of the parts will be all-new or heavily modified. The Veyron’s 8.0-liter, quadturbocharged W16 will carry over with output boosted from 1,200 to 1,500 horsepower, which will be done via direct fuel injection and electric turbochargers. These will provide fast-acting
torque, likely to peak around 1,000 lb-ft, sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Bugatti expects a top speed of around 288 mph with this setup. While we await that car with eager anticipation we look forward to bidding farewell to one of the cars of our generation in Geneva.

Building on the comprehensive revisions made to the Alfa Romeo MiTo in 2014, the new MiTo “Progression” makes the dream of owning a new Alfa Romeo more attainable while the sporty new “Junior” recalls the legacy of the 1966 Alfa Romeo GT 1300. It may be the new entry point into the Alfa Romeo range, but the MiTo Progression comes equipped with the high levels of features expected of a premium hatchback including air conditioning; a leather steering wheel and gear shifter and Alfa Romeo’s Uconnect™ five-inch colour touch screen infotainment system with Bluetooth®; voice recognition; USB / auxiliary inputs and steering wheel remote controls. In terms of safety, the MiTo Progression is equipped with Vehicle Dynamic Control (stability, braking and traction control with hill-holder), TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring) and seven airbags, while its undeniable visual appeal is further enhanced with 15-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and titanium grey headlight and rear light surrounds. The Alfa Romeo MiTo Progression is offered with a choice of engines
including the insurance-friendly 78hp 1.4-litre engine, which is reintroduced with Start&Stop and EU6 certification resulting in an official combined fuel economy figure of 50.4 MPG and CO2 emissions of 130g/km. The official 0-60 MPH for the 1.4 78hp engine is 13.0 seconds and its top speed is 103 MPH. The award-winning 0.9-litre TwinAir 105hp turbo petrol engine (67.3 MPG / 99g/km) and 1.3litre JTDM-2 85hp turbo-diesel (80.7 MPG / 90g/km) engines are also available with the Progression trim level, priced from £13,770 OTR and £14,315 OTR respectively. The new Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior aims to broaden the appeal of the MiTo range still further by offering stylish but attention-grabbing looks within an affordable and insurable package. It builds on the high specification of the MiTo Progression but adds 17-inch alloy wheels with a brilliant white finish as well as matching door mirror caps and distinctive new “Junior” boot decal, also finished in white. Other enhancements include front fog lights; a sports rear bumper and satin-effect door handles with matching headlamp and tail-lamp
surrounds, while the interior benefits from special Junior upholstery, Junior floor mats and a flat-bottom sports steering wheel with contrasting stitching. Under the bonnet, the Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior is powered by the 0.9litre TwinAir 105hp turbo petrol engine (0-60MPH in 11.4 seconds / 114 MPH) and 1.3-litre JTDM-2 85hp turbo-diesel (0-60MPH in 12.9 seconds / 108 MPH) and is priced from £14,870 OTR and £15,415 OTR respectively. The Alfa Romeo MiTo Junior was inspired by the stunning Alfa Romeo GT 1300 Junior from 1966 which combined the gorgeous looks of the Giugiaro-styled 105/115 Series coupe with a small-capacity version of the legendary all-alloy Alfa Romeo TwinCam engine. Developed with Italian taxation in mind (which penalised larger engines), the Junior GT 1300 amassed 91,000 sales (accounting for 69 percent of all 105/115 Series built) and has become very collectable in its own right thanks to its purity and character, as well as the larger number of enthusiasts whose earliest Alfa Romeo memories are of that very car.

February 2014 - 4th Edition
Soccer League UK - Leeds Soccer League UK Leeds was officially launched in August 2014 with the ambition of bringing together West Yorkshire’s leading sixa-side teams to crown an overall champion. With representatives travelling from across Leeds and Bradford to
take part in the weekly competition, the matches are held at Thomas Danby College every Monday and Thursday evening. The brainchild of Mushad Ahmed, Soccer League UK Leeds is the first of many franchise opportunities which will hopefully set up across the
country, offering teams the chance to play against their region’s top sides, at the lowest prices around. Keep up to date with all the latest match reports and league tables with the Asian Express newspaper who will be reviewing the best of the week’s actions every issue.
Borussia edge pasty Real whilst Jubodhol stay top Borussia Teeth 2-2 Team Real Last season’s top scorer, Hamza Ismail, is off the mark this season after bagging the winner in Borussia Teeth’s latest victory over Team Real. Haseeb Ahmed gave Borussia the lead in the first half before Ismail doubled the total moments later and despite a reply from Real’s Ryan, no comeback was on the cards. It was a close affair from the first kick to the last, with both sides having enough chances to take away all three points. A number of early near misses proved costly for the league debutants who fell behind in the first half when Ahmed got the opener with a fine individual goal. As Real attempted to reorganise, they were caught out once again as talisman, Ismail, found himself unmarked in the opposition area to finish at the front post. His first goal of the season clearly meant a lot to the forward who found the back of the net an incredible 25 times last campaign. Team Real continued to press Teeth back as the game played on, and were rewarded for their efforts when Ryan netted at the close of the first half.
A tight second half saw Borussia adopt a defensive approach as Real pushed forward looking for an equaliser yet as time ran out on the clock, there proved to be no way through a resilient back line. The victors were perhaps the
weaker side in the second half yet held on for all three points and a victory which could prove vital as the season progresses. MOTM - Haseeb Ahmed (Borussia Teeth)

Al-Aqs 1-0 JackHammer FC
JackHammer FC’s first game in the SLUK Division One ended in a spirited defeat as they went down 1-0 at the hands of Al-Aqs. Aminul scores the only goal as Al-Aqs beat JackHammer FC 1-0 Al-Aqs were the better team early on with Aminul Hoque getting the only goal early on. Aminul also had the chance to get his second after somehow wiggling his way through a few players but his shot was just wide of the goal. New Boys Jackhammer FC hit the post on a few occasions and had some good spell of possession at times but just wasn't their day. Man of the Match – Aminul Hoque (Al Aqs)
Hyde Park 0-0 Tetley’s Tino
Reigning champions Hyde Park are still struggling to get of the mark this campaign as they drew 0-0 with Tetley's Tino, in a game they were moments away from losing. Last season’s top scorers made it back-to-back goalless draws and only avoided defeat after a late penalty save. The first half was an even contest, with Tino’s looking motivated following last week’s 4-0 triumph over Super Six. However, it was late in the second half that the game really began to live up to its potential. First, Tino’s keeper, Ziad, made a fine double save to deny Kadeem McFarlane and then Tyler Bussue, before the penalty incident came with just seconds left in the game. Bussue stumbled into his own area to give away the spot kick yet heroics from shot-stopper Akiab, ensured the game remained goalless. MOTM - Ziad Hussain GK (Tetley’s Tino)
Old Bacca Boys 1-0 NewBees
TEAM OF THE WEEK: NFA
PLAYER OF THE WEEK NFA skipper Rippon Ali picked up the Player of the Week title as he helped guide last season’s runnerups to their first victory of the season. Defeating Half a Dozen Cousins, 3-0, the playmaker was back to his best and will hope to see his team push on following the three points.
One goal was enough for Old Bacca Boys to record their first win of the season as they defeated the NewBees by goal to nil. Safraz Akhtar struck in the first half to cap his debut with a goal and guide OBB to all three points. Meanwhile, NewBees are still looking for their first goal this term after registering another blank yet looked promising elsewhere on the field with fine build-up play and neat passing. Safraz’s strike may have sent the opponents down to eighth spot, yet with more firepower, the league’s new boys should start picking up points in the coming weeks. THE BEAST FROM THE EAST – GENNADY GOLOVKIN By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
Boxer Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KO’s) is a polite man and wellspoken. In his appearance he looks like a simple, kind person and the type of guy who would help an elderly lady across the road. His dress sense is simple and usually consists of a vneck sweater and a sensible haircut with a warm smile. However they say looks can be deceiving and it’s definitely the case when it comes to Golovkin who is a boxing beast in the boxing ring. British fighter Martin Murray challenged Golovkin on Saturday night and the outcome was as expected with the referee stopping the boxing bout in the 10th round and declaring Golovkin the clear winner. Golovkin is a WBA middleweight and WBC interim world champion from Karaganda, Kazakhstan. He has a 90 per cent knockout percentage that is the highest of any middleweight champion in the history of the sport. As a child Golovkin would regularly get into street fights with men a lot older then himself and manage to beat them and according to him this was the stage of his life when he realised his fighting attributes and decided to take up boxing. Golovkin as an amateur boxer managed to win the World Championship gold in 2003 and a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics. He has fought in over 350 amateur and 32

professional boxing bouts and has never suffered a knockout defeat or been staggered by any opponent to date. Golovkin’s previous notable boxing victims have been Marco Antonio Rubio, Daniel Geale, Nobuhiro Ishida and Matt Macklin who have all suffered from crushing knockout defeats. Golovkin says his boxing success is not only due to him being a puncher and it is more to do with his boxing aggressiveness, speed, positioning and tactics. Golovkin is next in line to challenge Miguel Cotto for his WBC title but that bout is proving very difficult to make happen. Golovkin however doesn’t think that his opponent has fear to fight him and has said "Miguel Cotto isn't scared; he's just a very smart guy. However I’m ready for everybody and it’s important for me to prove that I’m the best in the middleweight division.” I personally do not see Golovkin managing to secure any meaningful bouts at middleweight and I would personally like to see him move up to supermiddleweight and fight some of the more elite fighters of boxing. Golovkin has already expressed an interest to fight the current best pound for pound boxer Floyd Mayweather at a catch weight and also British super-middleweight hard man Carl Froch even though both of them boxers are now near the end of their careers and a fight against Golovkin will more than likely not happen. In my opinion also Golovkin is the new breed of fighter and what the Murray fight proved to me was that Golovkin doesn’t only possess the skill and power, but he also has that unique ability to take his opponents hardest punches and still keep coming forward to seek and destroy. Golovkin “the beast from the east” is certainly the next boxing superstar without a doubt.
TEAM: BARA will face off against an Italy international side during their tour and compete for the White Ribbon Trophy, pictured (l-r): Qari Asim, Garry Schofield, Ikram Butt
White Ribbon Trophy to be contested in Italy
All roads lead to Rome for Schoey and BARA Rugby League legend Garry Schofield OBE has accepted the challenge of becoming Director of Rugby for a forthcoming BARA (British Asian Rugby Association) tour of Italy which could involve a meeting with the Pope. The BARA team will take on a Federation Italian Rugby Football League (FIRFL) XIII in Rome on the 16th May with the two teams playing for the White Ribbon Trophy. The match, and possible Papal meeting, forms part of BARA’s support for the White Ribbon Campaign, a global initiative made up of men speaking out against violence towards women and girls as well as encouraging interfaith dialogue. The BARA team will be wearing a special jersey deigned in support of the campaign and have been working in close collaboration with FIRFL on a number of initiatives including raising awareness of the White Ribbon Campaign in Italy.
Garry Schofield commented: “When Ikram (Butt) approached me about this position I was very excited about the prospect of returning to rugby league and lending my advice to this association and the players,” he said. “I have been away from the game for a while now for whatever reason but I am delighted to be back in this role. “I won’t be teaching players how to pass or tackle necessarily as they are professionals and will already know these things, but if I can lend any advice about things they may not have known, or noticed before, I will be more than happy to do so.” Ikram Butt, BARA founder and former England Rugby League international, commented: “We’re delighted
to have such a well known Rugby League name as Schoey leading such a pioneering tour and are actively putting in the work behind the scenes to gain an audience with the Pope. “Pierluigi Gentile, Secretary General of FIRFL, has been instrumental in the development of the thirteen-aside code in Italy and has overseen a significant increase in players from 300 to over 4,000 active players over the past five years. “His stewardship has also led to the introduction of a championship league along with the Italian Cup and has been the driving force behind FIRFL’s efforts to become affiliated to CONI, the Italian National Olympic committee which will be granted by the end of the year. “Both the hosts and BARA will unite to promote the shared values peace, tolerance and community harmony through sport and those will be the messages we could take to

the Vatican.” Included in the tour party will be Chris Green, founder of White Ribbon UK and a UN Ambassador and Qari Asim, recently awarded with an MBE and an honorary doctorate for his ground breaking services in enhancing community relations and work in engaging young people. Ikram continued: “As part of the rugby development tour, Qari Asim will deliver a seminar on the benefits of sport and faith with Chris Green also delivering a seminar on the White Ribbon Campaign.” Pierluigi Gentile said: “We are delighted to be hosting BARA in Rome this May to play against our International team in what promises to be an auspicious occasion. FIRFL share the same values as BARA in using the sport of Rugby League as a social means to engage with the wider communities and address important issues such as the White Ribbon Campaign.” Established in 2004 by dual code international Ikram Butt (England Rugby League and Pakistan Rugby Union), BARA has been a force for good in terms of promoting community cohesion across the UK through both codes of the oval ball game. BARA is an organisation which aims to provide positive role models, break down cultural and religious barriers, promote community integration, personal development, healthy living and encouraging participation in sport and physical activity especially through rugby.

VICTORY: Afghanistan’s win was their first ever in the World Cup, whilst defeat signalled 11 in a row for Scotland
Afghanistan edge past Scotland Historic victory heaps more misery on Scots Afghanistan overcame the odds last week to register their first ever World Cup victory, as they triumphed against Scotland by one wicket with three balls to spare. Despite stuttering their way to 97-7, a magnificent stand from Sami Shenwar saw the batsman record 96 runs as the unlikely comeback became more and more likely with every over. He was finally caught on the boundary with 19 runs still needed for victory, giving last man, Shapoor Zadran, the chance to write his name into the history books. Hitting eight runs off nine balls,
the run chase was always going to be tight and with four needed from the final four deliveries, Zadran made himself a hero by reaching the boundary in the final over. A gutsy final wicket partnership alongside Hamid Hassan earned Afghanistan victory, less than seven years after they were promoted from playing in the bottom tier of the International Cricket Council's world league. Speaking to The Guardian after the game, Afghanistan’s coach, Andy Moles, who has previously held the same role with Scotland, said: “I’ve seen some strange things in cricket but that was one of the more remarkable.
“We played some irresponsible cricket but I told them to drag it out to the end. I’m really proud of them; they are so passionate and they have worked immensely hard. I’m not entirely pleased by the way we played but I’m delighted by the result. If we play the full nations more often we can only get better. “I know the Scottish players and I understand how difficult it is for them to lose that game. Afterwards I told my team to make sure they win with humility”. Meanwhile, defeat for Scotland signals their 11th in a row in World Cup competitions, earning them the unwanted record of most successive defeats since debuting.
