Leeds stands up for

Palestine Nationwide demonstrations continue in ‘fight for justice’

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Calls of ‘Free, Free, Palestine’ were echoed across Britain this past week as demonstrations were held in support of the war-ravished region. Since the start of the attacks on Gaza, more than 800 innocent Palestinians have been killed and over 140,000 Gaza residents have been displaced. Despite these figures, Israel’s

army has continued to progress in their ground invasion as the death toll continues to rise. Over the past fortnight, people in the UK have taken to the streets in pro-Palestine protests, and to campaign against what they deem as ‘bias reporting from the media’. BBC studios across the nation have found themselves targeted in particular, due to their alleged ‘Israeli-bias’ in the reporting of the ongoing unrest in Gaza. UK Protests More than 100,000 marched on

London last weekend starting from Downing Street before heading up Whitehall to the Israeli Embassy. At both sites, key speakers addressed the crowds who blocked roads across the city. Streets were turned into a sea of green, red and black as people travelled from all over the country to join in the protest. Diane Abbott MP and Andy Slaughter MP, opened the speeches before the huge crowd began their march. Speakers at the

Ms Colborne said she condemns Israel’s massacre on Gaza and rallied the crowd with her messages of support. She said: “London has already shown its outrage at Israel's attacks on the mostly refugee population of Gaza, with people turning out in their thousands last week. “Today's national demon-

Palestine Exhibition

With demonstrations taking place up and down the country throughout the past month in support of Palestine, a unique, visual exhibition will be displayed in Leeds this weekend. Details are being kept under wraps at the moment yet the interactive art, titled ‘The Hidden truth’, has been created, according to its brainchild, Rizwan Ali, to ‘expose the reality of Israel’s war crimes’. Rizwan adds that there has never been such an exhibition shown in the city centre before and although it may cause controversy, the message it spreads will ‘be true’. “We wanted to do something a bit different to raise awareness of the true damage Israel’s bombs are having,” he said. “This demonstration is very visual and we have had permission to hold it on Briggate which is great as more people, who may be unaware of the situation, are able to see it.” The exhibition will be held on Briggate between 12pm and 4pm on Saturday 26th July.

The beach returns

The fun and atmosphere of an unforgettable trip to the beach is once again set to transform a popular city centre square next month. Following a successful debut last year, Leeds own ‘City Beach’ will be returning for a second summer season to Millennium Square from Saturday 9th August until Sunday 31st August. Organised by International Funfairs in partnership with Leeds City Council, City Beach will be open daily from 10.30am to 7pm. Set to take centre stage this year is a traditional Ferris-wheel which will overlook the real sand area surrounded with boardwalk style decking, deck chairs and palm trees. Once again a wide range of themed activities, rides and stalls will also be available for all the family to enjoy including ‘Bamboo Bungees’ trampolines, a tropical jungle adventure funhouse, beach slide, ‘Waikiki’ cars, seaside carousel plus water attraction favourites; Pirate boats, Aqua Walker balls and new water cannons.

A new package of action and funding to protect millions of girls at home and abroad from female genital mutilation and forced marriage, was announced this week at the Girl Summit 2014. The event was attended by over 500 delegates from 50 countries, UN agencies, survivors, charities, community groups, faith

leaders and front line professionals, to galvanise global efforts to end female genital mutilation (FGM) and child and forced marriage (CFM) within a generation. The Girl Summit, hosted by the Government and UNICEF, is aimed at mobilising domestic and international efforts to end FGM and CFM within a

generation. It will bring together domestic and international work to accelerate the work of campaigners, governments and charities around the world to bring an end to these practices. A new report out today from City University London in collaboration with Equality Now estimates that approximately 60,000 girls aged 0-14 were born in England and Wales to mothers who had undergone FGM. It estimates that approximately 103,000 women aged 15-49 and approximately 24,000 women aged 50 and over, who have migrated to England and Wales, are living with the consequences of FGM. In addition, approximately 10,000 girls aged under 15 who have migrated to England and Wales, are likely to have undergone FGM.

Major steps to stamp out these practices include • A £1.4m FGM Prevention Programme, launched in partnership with NHS England to help care for survivors and safeguard those at risk. • New police guidance from the College of Policing and an inspection programme by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) that will

look at how the police handle cases of FGM. • A consultation on proposals to introduce new civil orders designed to protect girls identified as being at risk of FGM. • New legislation that will mean parents can be prosecuted if they fail to prevent their

daughter being cut. • New legislation to grant victims of FGM lifelong anonymity from the time an allegation is made. • A new specialist FGM service which will include social services, to proactively identify and respond to FGM. This will be supported by an ongoing

package of work led by the Chief Social Worker Isabelle Trowler. • New programmes to prevent child and forced marriage in 12 developing countries. • An International Charter – calling for the eradication of these practices within a generation.

Leeds in Bloom

Talented young artists from schools across the city have seen their flowerbed designs become a reality outside of one of Leeds’ most prestigious civic buildings. Held as part of this year’s Leeds in Bloom design a flowerbed or edible bed competition, 10 lucky winners were invited to see their designs come to life in locations outside the civic hall as part of a special ceremony. They were then presented with prizes and certificates by the Lord Mayor of Leeds Cllr David Congreve and Cllr Jack Dunn whilst gardening gift vouchers, totalling £300, were also presented to the schools that each youngster attends. Over 1,700 entries were received as part of the initiative, which aim is to encourage young people to, not only become more aware of their environment and its horticulture features, but also find out more about the fun they can have while gardening.

CHALLENGE: Abid Khan completed the task of cycling from Bradford to Leeds and back again last weekend as he raised funds for the charity, Interpal

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A 19-hour fast, sweltering conditions, and even a pair of broken handlebars could not stop a Bradford cyclist from completing his fundraising mission last weekend. Abid Khan, from Clayton Heights, pedalled his way from Bradford to Leeds, and back again, in hope of raising funds for those most in need in Palestine. Within just one week of setting himself the challenge, the 27-year-old had already raised over £1,000 before he took to the roads on Sunday. With the support of his wife, who followed closely behind in a convoy, Abid was able to complete the task despite only riding a bike on the road for the first time earlier in the week. “It was really tough and a big challenge especially without any water,” he said. “Thankfully I had some great support from my wife, friends and family who, as well as sponsoring me, sent me texts and messages of encouragement throughout the ride. “I was really proud to finish it because I knew this money would be going to a good cause.” Setting off from Bradford city centre at 11.30am, Abid cycled

Bradford Council's Sport and Leisure service is inviting residents to give their views about its pools and other facilities offered at its sports centres including the gyms. Respondents are being offered the chance to win a free year's membership of the Council's facilities across the district with all entries being put in a prize draw. The aim of the survey is to find out how much residents know about the facilities that are available and how they rate them. The feedback will help to further improve the activities on offer. To take part in the survey, log on to www.bradford.gov.uk/consultations and follow the instructions or pick up a paper copy from the Council's pools and offices before 5th August.

CYCLING: Abid was not able to drink any liquids during the challenge as he was fasting and had to pour water over himself to keep cool in the heat

his way to Leeds in around 90 minutes before he had to undertake the unenviable task of cycling back. After a rest period to catch his breath, and also hammer the handlebars back onto his bike, he jumped back on the saddle and began the uphill climb. Arriving in the city just over one and a half hours later, Abid says he was greeted by the ‘common sight’ of fellow fundraisers also undertaking selfless acts to raise money for Palestine. The Bradford resident added that it made him very emotional to think of all the people who had been affected by the conflicts abroad. “At the time of breaking fast I was close to tears,” he said. “I knew that I had struggled throughout the day and was now able to have access to food and drink, but people in Palestine didn’t even have these little luxuries. “That thought kept going through my mind and it really put the whole fundraising challenge into perspective.” He added: “I hope people will read my story and do similar initiatives because we can all do our part to help any charity.” Abid will meet representatives from the Interpal charity this weekend to hand over the donations which so far total almost £2,000.

Statue returns ‘home’

A life-size marble statue of the Madonna and Child has been returned to Cliffe Castle after a 64year absence. Local historians had initially thought that the 1870s Italian Marble statue was sold at auction in 1950. But sculpture historian happened to spot it in the grounds of St Anne's Presbytery and recognised it as an important piece of work. Museum staff realised it was the missing statue. It was one of a number of artworks representing the Virgin Mary in the Castle. Research showed that, rather than being sold at auction, the statue was presented by the Countess Manvers, Henry Isaac Butterfield's granddaughter, to St Anne's Church.

Honorary Doctors By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

An Imam, a Sikh Leader and a community champion lead the way in this year’s honorary doctorates list who were commended this past week as part of Leeds summer Metropolitan’s graduations. Amongst the total 17 recipients of this year’s awards was Hamara Healthy Living Centre’s CEO, Hanif Malik, who was commended for his work in helping to establish the largest ethnic minority organisation in the voluntary and community sector in Leeds. Mr Malik worked closely with the university earlier this year on a project aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of taxi drivers by supporting them to make positive changes to their diet, exercise and lifestyle. On receiving his honorary degree, the Leeds resident said he was ‘honoured’ and ‘privileged’ to be commended by the educational institution. “My advice to students graduating today is to aim high and never let people tell you that you can’t achieve your goals because I’d like to think I’ve proven people

As support continues to pour in for Palestine, a business in Bradford has been working overtime to ensure the colours of the nation are plastered across the city. Prime Image, a multimedia design

and print agency operating out of Lister Mills, has been printing stickers and magnets in support of the area, all free of charge, since the first Manchester BBC protest a fortnight ago. Since then, the business has helped cover more than 140 cars in the Palestine designs, with only donations accepted for the work. So far, the team have raised more than £1,700 which will be handed over to the Interpal Charity. Managing Director, Wasim Qureshi, says the idea initially came from a friend requesting one sticker for his car and it soon snowballed into a major project. “It has been absolutely hectic here for the past two weeks,” he said. “It was initially just one person who came down on the Sunday of the Ride4Justice convoy because one of his friends was going to spray his bonnet the colours of the Palestinian flag. “We printed him out some stickers for his car instead and as people were driving past they started pulling over and asking if they could get some

done as well. “Soon we were printing them for everyone. The only thing we asked was they made a contribution to charity and at our last count we had brought in £1754.40.” He added: “We had initially just thought of creating small stickers for inside cars but we quickly started getting requests for back windscreen designs, front bonnets and even wrapping cars.” Mr Qureshi actually travelled to Gaza back in 2010 to deliver aid as part of a convoy and saw the impact war can have on the most vulnerable. He says his experiences there have only inspired him to continue supporting the ‘innocent civilians’ and he hopes campaigns such as the stickers, help raise awareness of what is happening in Gaza. “A few years ago I did travel to Gaza and the people there were incredibly humble,” he said. “We have long been supporters of Gaza and hopefully the ongoing protests throughout Britain and the world, will raise awareness of the injustices in the country.”

Mainstream media gone dumb? Activist Ashleigh Shaw gives Asian Express readers her opinion on the world-wide protests for Palestine

Ashleigh Shaw, a 49-year-old mother of two from Cheshire, became a social media activist in 2011

Since the three Israeli settlers were kidnapped and subsequently found dead, the Israeli authorities have escalated their control over the people of Gaza, as usual in the form of violence, fear, and now bombing from land, sea and air. Since the beginning of the escalation, ordinary people, from around the globe, from all walks of life, all religions, all cultures, have joined together, sometimes in their tens of thousands, to show their support for the Palestinian people. Their soul purpose has been to voice their contempt for the disproportionate Israeli attacks and collective punishment, of the already beleaguered citizens of Gaza, and also the West Bank. The mainstream media, such as the BBC, from here in Britain, were reporting the attacks on Gaza, as a justification for Hamas rocket attacks. As for my part at this point, I could not bare the bias reporting of the situation, and reached for my phone, and made a video giving a brief outline of what was actually happening, and why Hamas had fired the rockets. What began to become clear was that Hamas were reacting in selfdefense after the mass arrests of civilians. After a few days, reports came pouring in over social media, especially Facebook, showing that people were beginning to protest in

favour of Palestine, and against the Israeli attack on them. Yet our media remained silent. As a direct result of the video I had posted to Facebook, I was contacted and asked to speak at a protest outside BBC Media City, Manchester, to show our outrage at the clear misinformation and proIsraeli bias. The protest was attended by around 5,000 people and I can assure you - we were very loud. The BBC reported the protest, as a short paragraph stating that the protest was against the Israeli attack on it's website, but still, we had nothing on the mainstream news. You really must question, why the world's media still remains silent when mass, spontaneous demonstrations have been gathering momentum all over the globe, protesting at the Israeli attack. If there is a large demonstration anywhere, the media is there, on the ground, in the thick of it, giving us minute-by-minute reports. So why the silence? This is not a couple of small protests, this is a global outpouring of humanity towards the Palestinian people, surely - a mass global movement is worthy of reporting. At the heart of the matter, lies the ‘no-criticism-of-Israel’ policy, which appears to have been adopted by both the world's governments and

mainstream media with equal guilt. What makes Israel so special? Why is it that we are allowed to criticise every other country on the planet, yet criticism of Israel is actively suppressed? Without entering into the realm of conspiracy here, the fact of the matter is, that Israeli lobbies are a powerful force, within most governments, American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in the U.S.A. and the Board of Deputies of British Jews (BDBJ) in Britain for example, fighting for the rights of the Zionist state, behind the closed doors of OUR government's conference rooms. Our governments put the interests of Israel, before those of it's own people, and that of the Palestinians, and now they are actively censoring the Global Media. Frustrated BBC journalists had to resort to tweeting pictures of the protests below their offices at BBC headquarters in London. It is a most disturbing turn of events, and those which must be addressed. We want a free press, not a Zionist press.

EU parliamentarians must rescue the EU from pro-Israel corrupt officials Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK (AOHR UK) criticised the EU for failing once again to take a legal and moral stand vis-à-vis the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip which have so far killed more than 693 Palestinians, including 164 children. The Israeli offensive has also injured more than 4300 civilians and destroyed hundreds of homes and public facilities. They added that the EU Foreign Affairs Council issued a statement on Tuesday the 22nd of July 2014 expressing its deep concern for the escalation in violence in Gaza Strip and called for an immediate ceasefire. The statement used very strong and clear language to condemn the rockets fired from Gaza and the use of civilians as human shields. It called for ‘disarming all terrorist

groups in Gaza’. When it to came to Israel, the statement carefully selected its words and condemned the killing of civilians without condemning the killer. It also recognised what it described as Israel’s right to defend itself and called upon Israel to ensure its operations be ‘proportionate and in line with international humanitarian law’. The organisation pointed out that the statement was issued on day 16 of the Israeli attack on Gaza which witnessed another bloody day of random strikes on various parts of the Strip. More than 75 people were killed on that day, many of them women and children. Monday was also a bloody day during which 103 people were killed in addition to the hundreds who were wounded. AOHR UK stressed that the tone and language of the statement

revealed the unwavering support of the EU for the Israeli strikes on Gaza and their adoption of the Israeli narrative for justifying the aggression, which has killed hundreds of civilians.

moral low for the EU. Speaking of Israel’s right to defend itself is a claim that cannot be justified on any human level nor be defended except in the annals of a barbarous institution such as the EU which is governed by the law of the jungle. It’s been pointed out that the EU’s position vis-à-vis the Israeli aggression does not reflect the views of the peoples of the EU. Many Europeans have organised protests and called upon their governments to take a firm stand against the Israeli massacres which shocked the world with images of children and women torn apart and buildings destroyed in one of the most crowded zones in the world. Gaza has been under siege by both the Israeli and Egyptian regimes for the past seven years. The EU has been supportive of the Israeli strikes since the beginning which led to the death of hundreds of Palestinians who could have been saved had Israel not enjoyed this kind of support, especially since Israel enjoys very close relations

making the EU and its member states complicit in the death of Palestinians especially in light of their refusal to take any tangible steps to stop the flow of weapons and military technology to Israel. The Organisation concluded that the statements issued by EU so far reflect quite clearly that the leaders of EU countries were not concerned or affected by the images of brutal death. Vilifying Palestinian victims and insisting on depicting Israel as a peaceful, innocent party in the conflict only serves to embolden Israel to commit more crimes, a position that threatens international peace and security. Civil society institutions in the EU have been called upon to expose the EU’s scandalous stand vis-à-vis the suffering of Palestinians since the EU has been drawing upon taxpayers money to support a terrorist state that has breached all human rights laws. AOHR UK also urged parliamentarians who have condemned the Israeli aggression on

Tesco sells dates from internationallyrecognised illegal Israeli territory DATES: The produce at the Bradford Tesco store, is clearly labelled up as produced and packed in occupied Israeli territory

The United Nations signed a new directive in January this year, which called upon the European Union’s 28nation-bloc from dealing or cooperating with businesses in the occupied territories of Israel-Palestine. However, to the fury of Asian Express readers, they’ve discovered that all packaged varieties of the dates were from Israel West Bank. Many have said that they will stop shopping at Tesco altogether. Sajad Hussain, from Bradford said: “I was absolutely disgusted that Tesco was flogging produce aimed predominantly to Muslims in Bradford during Ramadhan, from a region where Muslims are being subjugated to horrors that we can’t even imagine. “To add insult to injury, the store manager seemed phased when I questioned him whether he knew that Israel West Bank is a globally-recognised illegal territory.” Asian Express contacted Tesco head office to question why they were trading with Israeli businesses from an illegal territory and what action it would take on selling dates from that region. A spokesperson from Tesco said: “We currently have one product that comes from the West Bank - a line of dates that is grown in Israel and packed in the West Bank. “We clearly label the product as coming from the West Bank so customers can make an informed choice. “We will be sourcing dates from a different facility outside the West Bank from September this year.” A growing international boycott campaign has been threatening the Jewish economy for a number of years in the wake of continuing development of Jewish-only settlements in the West Bank. In February this year Norway’s finance minister directed a boycott worth $810 with two Israeli firms.

Asian Express Managing Editor, Andleeb Hanif commented: “Europe says that Israeli settlements are illegal under international law, yet it continues to trade with Israel. How bizarre! By stocking products and goods from an apartheid region, consumers are unwittingly contributing to the injustice upon the suppressed people.”

Q&A with your property law solicitor

DIN Solicitors specialise in various areas of law. This week our solicitor will be discussing frequently asked questions in relation to residential conveyancing.

• What is conveyancing? Conveyancing is the term given to the process of transferring legal ownership of land and property. Conveyancing can include sale, purchase, and re-mortgaging.

• How long does conveyancing take? The conveyancing process does not have a fixed duration. Much depends on whether or not there is a mortgage, the cooperation of all parties involved etc. A straightforward conveyance where there are no major problems can be completed within 6-12 weeks. However please note this is a guide only; some conveyances may take longer and some may be completed sooner.

• How much does conveyancing cost? There are two costs – one is the legal fee and one is a fee for disbursements (see below). The legal fee will depend on the purchase/sale price of the property and whether a mortgage is involved. We are able to provide a fixed fee which is very reasonable and competitive. • What are disbursements? Disbursements are expenses paid to third parties and which are incurred in the conveyancing process (e.g. property searches, Land Registry fees etc). We have excellent contacts with search providers and can obtain competitive quotes for search fees.

• What are the different types of searches? The main searches include the following: • Local Authority Search – this reveals the property’s planning history and any future planning proposals likely to impact the property. • Drainage Search – this tells you whether the drains run into a private or public sewer. • Land Registry Search – this reveals if there are any undisclosed mortgages on the property. • Land Charges Search – this is usually required by the mortgage lender to ensure you are not bankrupt. • Environmental Search – this reveals if there are any waste disposal sites in the locality and whether there is any risk of flooding, subsidence etc. There may be other searches which may be applicable to your conveyance. Please contact us and we will advise you further.

Halal burger case concludes An investigation into undeclared pork found in halal lamb burgers supplied to Leicester schools has concluded that no further action should be taken against the manufacturer Paragon Quality Foods Ltd. In April 2013, Leicester City Council withdrew halal lamb burgers supplied to 19 schools after test results showed up to 50 per cent pork DNA in a sample. Follow-up tests on this sample were commissioned by Espo – which provides school dinners to the city council - and also carried out by a public analyst on behalf of Leicester City Council. The results of these tests supported the original findings. The council took samples of nine additional batches of the halal lamb burgers which had been supplied to schools in the city. The public analyst found undeclared goat DNA in all of them but no undeclared pork DNA. Two samples of the halal lamb burgers taken from consignments at a Leicester wholesaler were also tested by the public analyst. Both of these samples were found to contain undeclared pork DNA and undeclared goat DNA. After receiving the results of the council’s testing, Paragon Quality Foods tested samples of frozen raw ingredients still in storage. The company's own testing also found evidence of undeclared goat DNA - but no pork DNA. It immediately acted to prohibit further use of the agent which had supplied the ingredient and the slaughterhouse from which it originated.

Leicester City Council has been investigating the findings with the full cooperation of Paragon Quality Foods Ltd over the last 14 months. This has included site visits, paperwork audits and interviews with key personnel under caution. The council has now concluded its investigation and is satisfied that Paragon Quality Foods Ltd exercised due diligence during the period in question. Therefore, no further action will result. Cllr Sarah Russell, Assistant City Mayor for neighbourhood services, said: “Officers have carried out a very detailed investigation. The company was diligent in its procedures at the time in question and may have been victim of adulteration further up the supply chain. “It is important to remember that the samples taken were produced around the time of the nationwide horsemeat scandal and expectations have changed significantly since then. “Paragon was quick to respond to this, introducing new procedures in its selection and traceability of suppliers, and inhouse testing of the material supplied to it, early in 2013. “But it is still clear that more needs to be done nationally to ensure that the food is governed in a way that prioritises and reestablishes consumer confidence.” Metin Pekin, managing director of Paragon Quality Foods, said: “Paragon Quality Foods is a pork-free site and has always operated the strictest of controls regarding the sourcing and production of its products.

“We are pleased that Leicester City Council has concluded that our company had exercised due diligence. “We understand the need for the council to act on its test results, particularly in light of what became apparent as the international adulteration of the meat supply chain. “In response to the emerging scandal at that time, Paragon Quality Foods introduced industry leading systems, including our on-site DNA testing lab. “Based on the independent analysis that Paragon received, we disputed Leicester City Council’s interpretation of test results which claimed the presence of pork DNA. “However, we are grateful to the council for its thorough investigation of this sensitive issue.” A recent programme of meat product testing carried out by Leicester City Council found that over 40 per cent of 105 samples taken from local businesses contained meat from species not declared. In April 2014, a sample of Halal lamb sheek-kebabs supplied to schools from another manufacturer was found to contain over 50 per cent undeclared beef DNA. This is being investigated by the home authority where the product was made. Last year, the city council set up a new board to review standards and practices for buying food for schools, elderly people's homes and other council venues.

Liberal Democrats ‘condemn’ MP’s tweet

Forced to apologise A Lib Dem MP has been forced to retract his comments after posting controversial remarks on Twitter in regard to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Bradford East representative, David Ward, tweeted on Tuesday ‘The big question is - if I lived in #Gaza would I fire a rocket? Probably yes’, before adding – ‘Ich bin ein #palestinian - the West must make up its mind - which side is it

on?’ His message was not welcomed by fellow Liberal Democrats who urged the party member to remove the comment from social media. Tory chairman, Grant Shapps, lead the calls for Mr Ward to delete the Tweet, labelling his message ‘appalling’ He said: “No MP should tweet what's essentially incitement to violence. Completely irresponsible.”

CONTROVERSIAL: Bradford East Lib Dem MP, David Ward, has been told to remove his comment from Twitter described as ‘an incitement to violence’

Mr Ward has previously found himself in hot water for controversial comments in regard to Israel. In July 2013 he had his party’s whip withdrawn over controversial comments he made in the lead-up to Holocaust Day in January. After substantial pressure from party colleagues, and the threat of disciplinary action, Mr Ward finally made the decision to apologise

Wednesday in a prepared statement. It read: “I utterly condemn the violence on both sides in Israel and Gaza. I condemn the actions of Hamas, and my comments were not in support of firing rockets into Israel. If they gave the opposite impression, I apologise. “However, while I defend the right of Israel to exist and defend itself, I will continue to speak out for

the rights of the Palestinian people who are facing untold suffering. More must be done by the world community to end this humanitarian crisis and protect the families living in Gaza. I can understand their plight and desperation.” The Liberal Democrats have previously been accused of failing to respond quickly to allegations of anti-semitism.

Poetry brings Yorkshire town to life

Batley Blossoms POET: Ahmad Gul OBE, Chairman of the Gujarati Writers Forum, has been writing poetry since he was a child in Alipore in India and hopes to see more children getting involved in literature

A writing group in Batley were celebrating last month after releasing two new books with a helping hand from some young budding poets. Batley Blooms was officially released last month by the Gujarati Writers Forum and includes 38 poems written by schoolchildren from three local schools. Batley Girls High School, Zakaria Muslim Girls’ High School and Batley Business Enterprise College all took part in the project which was set up with the aim of promoting literature to the youth as well as creating cohesion between English and Asian children in Batley. Chairman of the Gujarati Writers Forum and poet, Ahmad Gul OBE, helped establish the project and said he was delighted to see such enthusiasm from students. “Poetry is a way of

bringing cultures together and that is why we wanted to come into schools and get children involved with literature,” he said. “Some of the poems are about ‘best friends’ and when somebody reads this book they will see that English girls are the best friends of Asian girls and it’s the same the other way too. “This is very important for people to see because it is promoting the mix of cultures through writing.” He added: “By doing this book we are also trying to get a new generation involved and my aim is to bring interest to literature. Any kind, whether you write poetry, prose, whatever it may be, I just hope to see more young people involved.” The book was officially launched at a special event last month with councillors and MPs in attendance alongside special guest, Dr

Jayendra Shekhdiwala, who is a professor at SP University in India. At the presentation, a separate book was also presented for the first time called ‘Fireplace’ and is a book of poems by Mr Gul. Since moving to Batley in 1963 from his hometown of Alipore, India, Mr Gul has been writing poetry about his experiences in the UK and back home. His latest book, the twelfth to be published, talks about some of his earliest memories of arriving at Heathrow Airport on his own at just 24, to making his way North to Batley with just three pounds in his pocket. With approximately 200 Indian’s living in the town at that time, Mr Gul says he used poetry as a way of helping him remember his home and family, and also cope with adapting to life in England.

Malaysia aircraft investigation continues TRAGIC: Richard Mayne, a student at the University of Leeds, was one of ten Brits killed in the Malaysia Airline crash

Brits onboard crashed plane

www.asianexpress.co.uk

A Leeds student is amongst the 298 fatalities of last week’s Malaysian Airline crash which was shot down over the Ukraine/Russia border. Richard Mayne, 20, originally from Leicester, had been studying Maths and Finance at the University of Leeds and was onboard the Boeing 777-200 aircraft which crashed en-route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam. Nine other Brits were also killed in the airline’s latest tragedy, just months after the infamous flight MH370 disappeared with 227 passengers on board. Mr Mayne had recently returned from a charity fund-raising trip to Mount Everest in March, whereby he raised more than £1,000 for the Kidasha charity which supports disadvantaged and vulnerable children in Nepal. John Wood, headmaster at the student’s former high school, The Dixie Grammar School, praised the young man. He said: “All of us in The Dixie Grammar School community are devastated to hear the tragic news of Richard Mayne's death on the Malaysian Airlines flight. “Richard was a great all rounder, good academically and also a keen sportsman.

Local

“It is indicative of his high standing at school that Richard was our deputy head boy, having been appointed following a rigorous selection process which included a vote by all students and staff. “But more importantly than this, Richard was an extremely pleasant and thoughtful young man who gave his time generously for everyone.” Earlier this week, Moscow separatists finally agreed to release the plane’s flight recorder to Malaysian officials as investigations continue to determine who was behind the apparent ‘targeted shooting’ of the aircraft. Despite this, Ukrainian forces claim they have telephone recordings which allegedly prove that Russian officials had ordered the separatists to handle the recording boxes before handing them to international investigators. This could hamper the whole investigation and US President, Barrack Obama, along with British Prime Minister, David Cameron, have warned Russia that strong sanctions will be taken if a proper investigation cannot be carried out. Meanwhile, the bodies of nearly 200 victims arrived in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Tuesday.

Recycling centre closes temporarily

Eastwood Recycling Centre in Todmorden is expected to be closed until November 2014, as extensive repairs are needed following an incident which caused damage on Saturday 19th July. This comes just seven months after reopening following major renovations to improve the facilities. A man has been charged with criminal damage and detailed investigations are underway by the Police, Calderdale Council and SITA UK. Immediately after the incident on Saturday, Council and SITA UK teams swung into action to make the centre safe and to prevent danger to the public. A security guard is at the site every night as a precaution, and a SITA UK employee is there during the day to advise visitors of alternative ways to recycle and dispose of waste while Eastwood is closed.

Making it clean for palestine By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A group of fundraising car washers got their buckets and sponges out last week as they raised thousands of pounds for Gaza. Throughout the scorching temperatures on Sunday, more than 20 volunteers from One Ummah Leeds took to the street and raised £6,500, taking their total to more than £20,000. Washing more than 500 cars, in exchange for donations going

towards Gaza, the group spent nine hours cleaning up people’s motors in Leeds. Volunteers came down throughout the day to join in the activities, whilst local businesses provided extra through support sponsorship. Naheem Yacub, part of the organising committee, said he was delighted to see so many people turn out on the day and the generosity of the public. “We had such a busy day and it never really stopped from 10am through until 7pm,” he said. “People were coming down to get their cars washed and some even parked up after it had been cleaned and grabbed a sponge so they could join in. The group have been selling tshirts and hoodies in build up to

the event which show support for Palestine in the ongoing conflict with Israel. merchandise was Further provided in the weekend and Naheem added that the popularity of all this once again shows a united city. “We were handing out air fresheners to every third or fourth car and by 4pm we had run out,” he said. “We just want to say a big thank you to all the volunteers and businesses who supported the event, and most importantly to the people who came down to get their cars washed.” A second car wash is set to be held this Sunday (27th July) outside the Pakistani Centre, opposite Bilal Masjid, in Leeds, where the team hope to take their total fundraising effort to £30,000 before Eid.

PULLED-OUT: Directors of iBoardTouch, Mr Zulfi Baif and Mr Saeed Rana, said their company was forced into the decision of backing out of an investment opportunity in Israel due to the immoral, illegal actions of the country

Boycott Israel loses SIXFIGURE business deal with Leeds firm

Israel Directors at a rapidly growing Yorkshire-based business have decided to take their own stand against the Israeli attacks on Palestine by cancelling a huge investment opportunity. iBoardTouch specialise in providing the latest interactive touchscreen technologies and despite only setting up less than two years ago, is already the second largest touchscreen manufacturer in the UK. With upcoming investment opportunities in both Germany and Dubai, which would accompany already established markets abroad, the business is gaining international notice. However, one investment opportunity ‘had to be cancelled’, according to the company’s directors, as it would be ‘morally wrong’ to financially support a nation currently in the midst of an illegal battle. Directors, Zulfi Baig and Saeed Rana, expressed their anger at what is currently happening in Gaza and said they were unwilling to show any kind of support to Israel at this time. “At the end of the day, we, as human beings, need to look at what is happening in Gaza and say enough is enough,” Mr Baig said. “We took the decision not to invest in the country purely because we did not want to show any financial support to Israel whilst this injustice is going on. “Yes, we will take a hit with this as we even had plans to open offices over there,

but we couldn’t morally go into a country which is committing crimes, on this scale. “Hundreds of people are dying because of Israel’s actions and we had initially planned to do a six-figure-deal with the country, yet that has now been scrapped.” Mr Rana added: “We have done our part in that sense, but why can’t somewhere such as Qatar help all the innocent Palestinians affected by the bombings. “They have been spending billions on a World Cup yet nothing to help these people. “The price of Muslim blood seems extremely low at the moment, less than a football ticket.” Peaceful protests have been taking place up and down the UK over the past two weeks in response to the ongoing unrest in Palestine. Both Mr Rana and Mr Baig praised the demonstrations as a way of creating awareness and added that it was now time to hit Israel ‘where it really hurts, in the pocket’. “I would suggest to everyone that we vote with our feet,” Mr Rana said. “Stop buying products which were made in Israel from your supermarket because eventually it will make a difference. “It may only be a few pounds here and there, but if everybody took this stand we would get noticed and the country would be forced to undertake the change which is needed right now.”

After the success of Make Bradford British, the team at Channel 4 couldn’t resist a second series and despite a host of new characters and a new location, there is at least one familiar face. Bradford’s very own, Rashid Khan, star of the first series, will take up a presenting role in the upcoming ‘Make Leicester British’ programmes. Following on from the original, the concept remains the same, with eight strangers from different cultures and backgrounds all coming together to learn about each other’s cultures. Leicester’s ethnic makeup has undergone significant changes over the past decade thanks to migration, and the city is now one of the first in the country where Britons are no longer a majority. Since Make Bradford British was broadcast in 2012, immigration has become an even bigger political issue. A recent YouGov poll found that immigration is now seen as the ‘most important issue facing the country’ (neck and neck with the economy) and Ukip stormed to victory in last month's European elections on an anti-EU, anti-immigration platform. Leicester has a reputation as a harmonious city and a model of successful multiculturalism. The series aims to find out what the city can teach the rest of Britain, but it also looks at how integrated the new European migrants are and what has changed in the communities where they have settled. With the production process still going on, Rashid Khan said he can’t reveal too many details but did say it was good to be back. “It was overwhelming to be asked back for a second series and I was very excited to hear that there was going to be another,” he said.

Make Leicester British

Hit Bradford tv show heads to the midlands

“I know there’s been a lot of positive feedback from the public wanting to see what has happened to the original cast but instead this series will focus on people in Leicester which I’m sure will still be very good. “As with the first one, it is an eyeopener because if you are going to put eight strangers together from different cultures and backgrounds there’s always going to be highs and lows. “It is not really focussed on religion, more on cultures,

upbringings and backgrounds of different people. “It’s like a Big Brother and Wife Swap put into one.” As with Make Bradford British, in the first programme everyone will live together in one house, eating together, managing a budget and going on trips together to explore their different senses of what it means to be British. In the second programme they will be paired up and spend a number of days and nights together - living in one another’s homes and meeting

friends and family – to gain a real insight into each others’ lives. Following the success of Make Bradford British, which won a prestigious international Rose d’Or award, Rashid says he still stays in touch with some of the original stars and explained what he is doing now. “Since the first series, myself, Damon and Desmond have been going into schools and hosting workshops on diversity and social cohesion,” he said. “Because we have experienced different cultures from the first series,

and by living in Bradford, any misconceptions we had about each others’ lifestyles have been removed. “By making these links with children and teaching them about the importance of diversity I like to think we are kind of acting like role models for the kids. “It is really enjoyable and we are always learning as well.” If you would like the Make Bradford British team to visit your school, youth centre or organisation, you can contact Rashid at rashidkhan13@ hotmail.co.uk

Conviction Quashed Solicitor helps innocent husband win appeal after being labelled ‘rapist’ by wife

A Leeds solicitor says that more and more women are doing ‘whatever it takes’ to remain a UK citizen after seeing a rise in the number of allegations being made in regards to false sexual or physical abuse. Abdul Iftikhar, of Kamrans Solicitors, has just recently closed a three-year appeal case which saw an innocent husband have his 13-year sentence revoked on the grounds that his wife lied about being sexually abused. The accused, Mr Khan, who asked for anonymity, had initially been handed the lengthy sentence after being found guilty of 16 counts of rape, over a two- year-period, by the complainant, his wife. Yet after a lengthy appeals process, which included collating fresh evidence namely: 16 witness statements, and documents from a number of organisations including the Home Office, DVLA, hospital and a bank, the conviction was resoundingly quashed. From the offset, Mr Khan vehemently denied all the allegations and Mr Iftikhar says the support of his client’s family was crucial in helping to prove the man’s innocence. “He was fortunate to have such a supportive family behind him, who supported him throughout this ordeal,” he said. “Our appeal was so strong, and the evidence that came with it, that the Court of Appeal actually took the rare decision to say no retrial would be ordered after this latest decision. “It is worrying to see these types of cases on the rise, with more women from the Asian subcontinent seemingly willing to do whatever it takes to remain in the UK. “Mr Khan’s case also had the added incentive, for the woman in question, to secure custody of the children. The father had been given the right to care for them and his wife once again used these allegations against him in an attempt to take the children away. “The past three years have been extremely difficult for Mr Khan but he can now start rebuilding his life.” Mr Khan’s case was finally decided upon earlier this month in front of Lord Justice Laws, Mr Justice Andrew Smith and His Honour Judge Cooke QC. Meanwhile, Mr Iftikhar explained further why he believed this type of case was becoming more common. “There is no doubt that the making of these false allegations are becoming more prevalent in society today,” he said. “By alleging that a partner has sexually or physically abused a spouse, they are more likely to be granted permission to remain in the UK on compassionate grounds and this inevitably has a knock-on effect on custody battles. “Innocent people are falling victim to false crimes being reported and hopefully this story will warn others of the situation.” A spokesperson for the innocent Mr Khan provided the following statement in

SUCCESS: Abdul Iftikhar, of Kamrans Solicitors, defended the innocent party in this case which took three years to successfully appeal

regard to the case. “The Khan family was devastated as to the manner in which the allegations of abuse were approached by the authorities and particularly the conduct of the Greater Manchester Police which only became apparent during the appeal process. “It became clear that not only had the complainant lied on oath but that the police had suppressed evidence (in favour of the defence), which would have impacted on whether there would have been a conviction in the first place. “Notwithstanding that our loved one lost his reputation, liberty and career, despite overwhelming evidence, the police are taking no action against the former wife. This the family find is wholly unfair. “Ultimately, the family had to search far and wide for a criminal solicitor specialising in criminal appeals and wholeheartedly recognise that without the assistance of Mr Iftikhar of Kamrans Solicitors, Leeds, who scrutinised the case in fine detail and whose search for fresh evidence over three years was clinical and in great depth, the chances of success would have drastically reduced. “The family are now considering their options against the conduct of the complainant, Greater Manchester Police and the Crown Prosecution Service.”

Give generously AND carefully Police issue reminder to charity fundraisers RULES: Volunteers often start collecting more during the month of Ramadan and West Yorkshire Police want to ensure guidelines are followed by all street collectors

As the number of fundraisers and charity collectors on the streets of West Yorkshire increases during Ramadan, the county’s police force is offering a reminder to those people to follow established guidelines for giving and receiving donations. A small rise in the number of public complaints has been reported by West Yorkshire police in regard to the impromptu street collections over the

past few weeks. With the current events in Gaza and Syria, coinciding with the month of Ramadan, it has lead to increased concern among local communities, along with increased appeals and fundraising. While spontaneous street collections are mostly well intentioned, it can often be difficult for the public to verify that they are giving to a genuine charity. There are laws around collecting money for charity in public which are there to protect donors and make sure that the money raised goes to a genuine charitable cause.

Police officials are now offering the following advice to both collectors and fundraisers: Be careful when responding to emails or clicking links within them to ensure that they are genuine. If you have any concerns about the legitimacy of a request for donations that appear to come from a charity, don’t hesitate to contact that charity directly. If you are in any doubt about a charity collector, ask for their identification and the charity’s name and registration number. If you are not happy about giving then and there, you can check to see if the

charity is on the public register of charities on the Commission’s website - www.charitycommission.gov.uk. If you are concerned that you may have been targeted by a fundraising scam, you should report this to the police. You should also contact the Charity Commission on 0845 300 0218 or via the aforementioned website. Think about how you are going to give. If you are a UK taxpayer and donate directly to a charity - whether online, over the phone, by post or by handing in a cheque at the charity's office or shop - it can claim Gift Aid to maximise your donation.

Life sentence for delivery driver killers

Two men, found guilty of the murder of a pizza delivery driver in Sheffield, have been sentenced to life in prison. Thavisha Lakindu Peiris, 25, bled to death whilst on his final shift in his car in Southey Crescent, on 27th October, just days before he was set to start his ‘dream job. Kasim Ahmed, 18, from Darnall, and Shamraze Khan, 26, from Sheffield, were jailed for a minimum of 23 years and

24 years on Thursday. Mr Peiris had been studying at Sheffield Hallam University and had just graduated from an IT course whilst working part-time as a Domino’s Pizza delivery driver. He was set to start work as an IT consultant just days after he was murdered in a ‘frenzied knife attack’ by his two assailants. A post-mortem examination showed that Mr Peiris had 14 stab wounds including one which severed his carotid artery and

another to his heart. In a statement they said: “We are still devastated and heartbroken over the loss of Thavisha and we are still unable to comprehend that he is actually gone. “He gave us so many reasons to smile and he was so caring and loving...The way in which he was taken from us is absolutely devastating.” MURDERED: Thavisha Lakindu Peiris was on his final shift as a Domino’s Pizza delivery driver when he was stabbed 14 times by his two attackers

#Cakes4Syria After a hugely successful campaign during Ramadan last year, the Cakes4Syria team are back once again in 2014 and have already raised well over £25,000. Expanding into a nationwide mission this year, the simple concept of buying a cake in exchange for £10 will help vulnerable Syrian refugees who have been affected by the ongoing civil war in their home country. Five pounds from every cake purchased goes straight to Islamic Relief’s Syria Appeal and this year’s fundraising target has already been smashed with cakes purchased across England, Wales and even Scotland. The project is run by young Muslim volunteers with distributors across the country on hand to drop off the cakes at the customer’s doorstep twice a week. With more and more orders coming in on a daily basis, it is up to the team at the Bradford Hub to keep the campaign running smoothly. Volunteer and one of the lead organisers of this year’s event, Sibbat E-Noor, said he was thrilled to see such a response on a national-scale and that it was an easy decision to expand the operation this year. “Last year we had so many people calling from London and Birmingham wanting cakes that we decided that we really had to sit down and discuss whether it was feasible,” he said. “Basically from there we decided to go ahead with it and ever since we have

received thousands of calls up here in Bradford and our 10,000th cake is set to be delivered on Thursday (17th July).” More than six million Syrians are currently in need of humanitarian aid with 1.7million refugees. The Cakes4Syria campaign has proved to be a big success both years it has run and Sibbat adds that it doesn’t surprise him how much people are willing to give. “At the end of the day people want to help but often don’t know how,” he said. “By simply picking up the phone and buying a cake you are helping someone in Syria and you are also getting a sweet reward too. “The generosity of our volunteers, of Islamic Relief, and of the people buying the cakes has been fantastic. We have even had one school right here in Bradford order 56 cakes at once just this week.” Cakes can be ordered by calling the Cakes4Syria call centre on 01274 952 144 or texting 07511 724 372 between 12pm and 8pm. Deliveries are made every Thursday and Sunday up until the end of Ramadan.

Perfect venue for any occasion A

Back in the Race T

he British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (Bapio) was recently unsuccessful in its Judicial Review claim against the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and the General Medical Council (GMC), the doctors' regulatory body. Racial discrimination allegations sparked the Judicial Review claim in the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Bapio began its legal battle against the RCGP and the GMC due to claims that the RCGP’s membership exam, the MRCGP, which doctors must pass to practise as a GP in the UK, discriminates against ethnic minority candidates. Bapio’s allegations against the RCGP (which conducts the exam) and the GMC (which is accountable for ensuring a fair process), included evidence that white candidates are four times more likely to pass the exam first time than minority ethnic candidates trained in the UK, and 14 times more likely than candidates trained overseas. Particular emphasis was drawn to the Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA), where students are examined on their ability to demonstrate effective communication with patients and colleagues. At the Judicial Review hearing, Mr Justice Mitting rejected the claim by Bapio that the CSA should be declared unlawful. He found that the RCGP was neither racially discriminatory nor in breach of its public sector equality duty. Mr Justice Mitting said the claim had been brought in good faith and in the public interest. He then expressed hope that the case would lead to progress:

“The bringing of this claim is likely, in the end, to bring something of benefit to the medical profession.” Mr Justice Mitting found that there was a disparity in results between different ethnic groups and stated that the RCGP must take action. He then expressed words of warning: “If it does not act and its failure to act is the subject of a further challenge in the future, it may well be that it will be held to have breached its duty,” he said. “But, as of now, I am satisfied that it's not in breach of its duty.” Mr Justice Mitting concluded by describing the outcome for Bapio as ‘if not a legal victory then a moral success’. Bapio president Dr Ramesh Mehta expressed hope in the judge’s remarks: “Although we may have lost the battle at this time, we feel we have won the war because the Judge has also said to the RCGP that they must now take action.” Whilst Bapio is undoubtedly disappointed with the judgment it seems that there could be a brighter future ahead for those ethnic minorities due to sit the examination. Mr Justice Mitting’s judgment could be seen as an invitation for Bapio to initiate further Judicial Review proceedings should the RCGP fail to take action to reduce the disparity in the results of the examination. This would not have been achieved without Bapio’s Judicial Review claim. We at Blacks have experience in handling Judicial Review proceedings and Medical Practice Law.

B

radford’s most renowned area for top quality meals is set to welcome a ‘new kid on the block’ next month as the highly anticipated launch of Lala’s Restaurant commences. Determined to bring a new flavour and taste to Bradford, as well as rejuvenating the area’s passion for food, the Lala’s team have taken on their biggest project to date in order to cater for the city’s food lovers. Based on Great Horton Road, owner, Faisal Rashid, has helped oversee the transition of the formerly burnt out site, rise from the ashes, and become a perfect setting for every occasion. Mr Rashid, known as ‘Junior’ to all his diners, says he is returning ‘home’ with the launch of Lala’s Bradford establishment and can’t wait to welcome clientele to the new restaurant. “It is great to see everything finally coming together and Lala’s finally returning to Bradford,” he said. “Diners have nothing like this available to them as things currently stand. Quality is no compromise. “Our aim is to put the ‘great’ back in Great Horton and bring energy back into this famous area.” When open, diners can expect the same great quality food and service as seen in other Lala’s establishments,

already running in Batley, Huddersfield and Wakefield, with extra dishes added to the menu. Continuing with their famous style, of continental food with a ‘Desi twist’, there will also options ranging from pastas to steaks - all this of course at the most competitive prices possible. You can rest assured that there is bound to be a course for every palate, whether you are wanting a quick bite for a snack, a coffee for a meeting, or a big meal for a celebration, you will not be disappointed. A dessert parlour will also be constructed onsite for those with a sweet tooth. Designed and built around Mr Rashid’s own design, he adds that there will be a few surprises for diners and is confident they will be a big hit. “The restaurant, from the building itself right down to the food, will be packed full of new surprises which we think people are going to love,” he said. “Lala’s will be able to cater for up to 250 people at any time and with a chic, outdoor area for the warmer days, comfort is certainly something that has not been overlooked.” Lala’s will open next month at their new Great Horton site whilst Junior and his team would like to wish everyone an Eid Mubarak.

The mother of three-year-old Mikaeel Kular has admitted killing her son at her trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. Rosdeep Adekoya, 34, pleaded guilty to a charge of culpable homicide, a reduced charge from murder, when she appeared in court on Friday 25th July. Little Mikaeel was beaten over a prolonged period and killed by Adekoya before his body was wrapped in a duvet, stuffed in a suitcase and dumped in woodland 20 miles from the family home in Drylaw, Scotland. The toddler’s fatal beating came after the family visited Nando’s restaurant and Mikaeel was sick. He was beaten over a period of four days, between 12th and 15th January, with Adekoya pleading guilty to punching her son and causing his body to hit against a hard object or inflicting blunt injuries on his head and body The court heard how Adekoya had beaten her son regularly and her internet search history included hits such as ‘I find it hard to love my son’, ‘I love all of my children except one’, ‘Why am I so aggressive with my son’ and ‘Get rid of bruises’. The mother-of-five also admitted attempting to defeat the ends of justice by contacting emergency services and claiming her son had walked out of the house overnight. His disappearance earlier this year led to a huge search by thousands of members of the public, who had initially been told that he had gone missing. It was two days later that the body was found in the woodland in Fife leading to nationwide grieving. Advocate depute Alex Prentice told the court: “The basis for the plea tendered being accepted is that the Crown accepts that the accused had no intention to kill Mikaeel and that the assault perpetrated upon him, although severe, fell short of the wicked recklessness required for murder.” Culpabale homicide, like murder, is a form of unlawful killing. Yet the glaring difference is that if a person kills intentionally it is murder, whilst if a person kills negligently, it is culpable homicide.

New sanctions brought in this past week will see businesses, found to be employing illegal workers, handed tougher penalties in the form of higher fines. Previously, a business owner would be fined a maximum of £10,000 for providing work for such an employee yet that has now doubled in an attempt to stamp out the crime. New measures have also been

introduced to ensure businesses don’t unintentionally hire an illegal worker. An interactive online tool, available at www.gov.uk/legalright-work-uk, has been launched to help employers establish if an applicant has the right to work in the UK simply by answering a few ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions. Immigration and Security Minister James Brokenshire said it

was crucial to increase the punishment for employers who break the law as it also has an effect on the wider community. He said: “Illegal working is a key driver of illegal immigration. It is not a victimless crime. It defrauds the taxpayer, undercuts honest employers and cheats job seekers out of employment opportunities. “Doubling the maximum

July 2014 - 3rd Edition penalty for those who hire illegal workers sends out a strong message to those who break the rules. “At the same time as getting tougher on rogue employers, we want to support legitimate ones by making it easier for them to check the immigration status of potential employees by using our new online tool.” If an employer is convicted of

‘knowingly employing’ an illegal worker, they may be sentenced for up to two years’ imprisonment and/or receive an unlimited fine, with business details having the possibility of being published by the Home Office. OUT: Long distance runner, Mo Farah, announced the decision after failing to recover from an illness

HAIR NAILS & BEAUTY

Beauty Top Tips Benefits of Black Seed for Hair Growth.

No Mo in Glasgow England star forced to pull out of Commonwealths One of Team GB’s most prolific athletes has announced that he will not be competing in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games following a recent illness. Mo Farah says he has been forced to withdraw from the competitions after failing to fully recover in time to compete in his two planned events much to the disappointment of the predominantly home crowd. The 31-year-old long runner had clinched Gold at the London Olympics in both the 5,000 and 10,000 metres events, and repeated the same feat last year at the World Championships in Moscow. He was set to compete in both events once more in this summer’s Commonwealth Games, representing England rather than team GB, yet a statement released on Thursday 24th July confirmed

51

his decision to pull out. Farah says he still plans on running in next month’s European Championships in Zurich and has remained in his training camp in Switzerland in an attempt to prove his fitness. Writing via an England team statement, he said: “I have taken the tough decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games. “The sickness I had two weeks ago was a big setback for me. “Training is getting better but I need another few weeks to get back to the level I was at in 2012 and 2013. “I really wanted to add the Commonwealth titles to my Olympic and World Championships, but the event is coming a few weeks too soon for me as my body is telling me it's not ready to race yet.” England's Chef de Mission Jan

Paterson said his presence would have been a great sight for fans yet wished Farah a speedy recovery. He said: “It is a real blow for any athlete to miss out on a major championships through injury, but to have fought so hard to regain full fitness and to have to take such a difficult decision at this stage is particularly hard. “We wish Mo all the very best and hope to see him back to his peak very soon.” The 20th edition of the Commonwealth Games kicked off on Wednesday 23rd July with an Opening Ceremony at Celtic Park. Hundreds of millions tuned in to watch the show live from around the world with stars such as lifelong Celtic fan, Rod Stewart, and Britain’s Got Talent contestant, Susan Boyle, headlining the spectacle.

People lose about one hundred hairs each day. Because hair is made of many nutrients, those nutrients need to be replenished in the body in order for hair to grow. Hair contains protein, fat, water, and carbohydrates. Foods to prevent hair loss can be found in oats, molasses, liver, and whole grains. It is important to stay hydrated to stimulate proper hair growth. Using remedies with Black Cumin alongside good nutrition is very beneficial in combatting hair loss and increasing hair growth. Black Cumin is known to treat thinning of hair, baldness and falling hair. It has more than 100 nutrients and vitamins to replenish the skin and hair and will help you to have a mane of hair that you can be proud of. Certain types of fungal infections can cause hair loss that is sometimes permanent. Black seed has anti-fungal properties that are proven to prevent these kinds of infections. It can also be used as a replacement for some kinds of medications that have hair loss as a side

effect. By switching to this herbal remedy, hair loss can be avoided. Black seed oil can be ingested for it's benefits but also applied directly to the hair and scalp for an even more intense effect. Black seed oil has many moisturizing qualities, as it contains the fatty acids needed to protect hair from damage. These acids create a layer over the hair that keeps the elements, toxins and day-to-day wear and tear from affecting the hair. Black seed oil also contains many helpful vitamins that can be massaged into the scalp. It can also fix hair that has been badly damaged either by styling or coloring. Damaged hair can grow back healthy and shiny from the roots down. Prity's Hair Growth & Repair Oil contains organic black seed oil combined with many other herbal ingredients that benefit hair. Flights resumed to Israel

British low cost carrier EasyJet said it will resume flights to Tel Aviv as scheduled from Friday 25th July after regulators lifted advice over flying into the Israeli airport. EasyJet said it would operate a flight from Tel Aviv to London on Thursday afternoon, before returning to its normal schedule, which includes connections between Tel Aviv and both London and Geneva, on Friday. “EasyJet will continue to monitor the safety advice on travel to and from Tel Aviv from all relevant authorities,” the company said in an emailed statement. On Tuesday the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority issued a ban on U.S. carriers from flying to Tel Aviv after a Palestinian rocket fired from Gaza fell close to Ben Gurion International Airport, with Europe's aviation regulator following suit with a recommendation not to fly there. They both lifted their warnings on Thursday.

UK sells arms to Russia

Lawmakers on Wednesday queried why Britain had granted licences to sell tens of millions of pounds worth of arms to Russia, embarrassing Prime Minister David Cameron, who has called for a Europe-wide ban on such sales because of the Ukraine crisis. The criticism, in a report compiled by four of parliament's select committees, comes two days after the British leader said France's sale of two helicopter carriers to Russia would be ‘unthinkable’ in Britain. The government said in March it would stop some arms exports to Russia, but the report said that as of mid-May only 34 of 285 outstanding licences, worth more than £131million had been suspended or revoked.

Food drive

Muslims from six mosques, charities and Islamic Centres in Manchester have come together to collect food items for their local food bank during the month of Ramadan. Last year in the UK, nearly onemillion people turned to food banks due to rising prices, unemployment and homelessness, meaning the services provided by these groups is more vital than ever. The Prophet Muhammad Food Drive, launched earlier this month, has been encouraging youth and members of the Muslim community to donate non-perishable food to help Compassion Food Bank in Moss Side. Syed Mohammed Musa Naqvi, the organiser and founder of the food drive, expressed his delight at the success of the group, in its early stages. “We have started this food drive in the name of Prophet Muhammad in this blessed month, who was sent as a blessing to the whole of humanity,” he said. “The Muslim community is a generous and caring community, with a history rich with examples of compassion, mercy and a strong

Northern food bank reaches those most in need tradition of giving and helping those in need.” The food drive has brought together Muslims from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, to show a unified stand against poverty. “We’ve got people from Indian, East African, Pakistani, Iraqi, Iranian, Syrian, Lebanese descent coming together, sharing their passion in helping our local community,” Mr Naqvi continued. “It is staggering that in a modern capitalist country, such as Britain, which prides itself in having a

welfare state, there is an estimated 13 million people living below the poverty line. “Many of these people face a difficult choice between whether to feed their kids or to pay their bills. Thousands go to sleep hungry every night. “This doesn’t sit comfortably with many of us as Muslims. Over the last three days the community has really come together and we have had such an overwhelming response to this appeal, that we are making this a regular thing.” The Prophet Muhammad Food

Drive will continue beyond Ramadan using Islamic festivals that happen throughout the year to make this a sustainable effort. Links have already been made with Islamic centres in Leeds and Bradford to make the Prophet Muhammad Food Drive a coordinated national effort. The groups that have been helping with the collection are: Islamic Unity Society, Jaffaria Islamic Centre, Darul Islam Foundation, Al-Raza Foundation, Labbayak Ya Zahra and Mohammadiyah Youth Society.

Forced marriage

criminalised Changes in government legislation set to protect thousands of potential victims

Forcing someone to marry against their will has become a criminal offence as of Monday 16th June. The new legislation has been introduced by the government to help people in England and Wales, but will also apply to UK nationals overseas who are at risk of becoming the victim of a forced marriage. Forced marriage can involve physical, psychological, emotional, financial and sexual abuse including being held unlawfully captive, assaulted and raped. In 2013, the government’s Forced Marriage Unit gave advice or support related to a possible forced marriage to more than 1300 people. The maximum penalty for the new offence of forced marriage is seven years imprisonment. Law enforcement agencies will also be able to pursue perpetrators in other countries where a UK national is involved under new powers defined in legislation. Home Secretary Theresa May said: “Forced marriage is a tragedy for each and every victim, and its very nature means that many cases go unreported. “I am proud to say that the UK is already a world-leader in the fight to stamp out this harmful practice with the government’s Forced Marriage Unit working hard to tackle this terrible practice in the UK and overseas. “Today’s criminalisation is a further move by this government to ensure victims are protected by the law and that they have the confidence, safety and the freedom to choose. “This summer, the Prime Minister will also be hosting the UK’s first summit dedicated to galvanising action against forced marriage and related issues.” The new legislation also makes forcing a UK national into marriage outside the UK an offence under domestic law for the first time. The offence is triable in courts in England and Wales. The new criminal offences will work alongside existing civil legislation (Forced Marriage Protection Orders - FMPOs) allowing victims to pursue a civil or criminal option. FMPOs can already be made by a civil court against any individuals suspected of trying to force a victim into marriage. From today the

National

breach of a FMPO is a criminal offence with a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine. This will strengthen the existing law by enabling speedier and more effective enforcement action against those who breach the terms of an order. It will still be possible for victims to seek enforcement for breach of a forced marriage protection order by way of the civil court’s contempt powers as an alternative to reporting the breach to the police. Crime Prevention Minister Norman Baker said: “Forced marriage is an appalling form of abuse which crosses borders and cultural boundaries. The scale of reported cases is deeply worrying, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. “Legislation is the next key step in solving this problem and builds on the hard work already being done by the government and third sector organisations to tackle this practice. “The message from the coalition government is clear - forced marriage is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.” Aneeta Prem, founder of Freedom charity, which exists to educate young people about forced marriage, said: “I am delighted that the government has taken action to criminalise forced marriage. “In the most tragic cases, people forced into marriage become domestic slaves by day and sexual slaves by night. “Today’s announcement sends out a powerful message that this indefensible abuse of human rights will be not be tolerated. “Everyone should have the freedom to choose.” Dr Ash Chand, the NSPCC’s strategy head for minority ethnic children said: “The change in the law to make forced marriage a crime in England and Wales is a huge step forward which we hope will deter those plotting against their own children. “Many young people who call our ChildLine service about this issue are frightened, concerned and feel control of their lives is being wrenched from them. “We have produced an animation that will help allay their fears and encourage them to contact us for help and advice.”

Missing plane found

Authorities said on Thursday they located the wreckage of an Air Algerie flight after it crashed in northern Mali killing all 116 passengers and crew, en route from Burkina Faso to Algeria. Regional aviation officials said they had lost contact with flight AH5017 at around 1.55am on Thursday, less than an hour after takeoff, following a request by the pilot to change course due to bad weather. Two French Mirage fighter jets and United Nations helicopters on Thursday had, for hours, hunted for the wreck of the

McDonnell Douglas MD-83 plane in remote northern Mali, a region prey to scattered Islamist militants and Tuareg separatist fighters. Malian state television said the wreckage of the flight was discovered between the town of Gossi and the Burkina Faso border. It said President Ibrahima Boubacar Keita would visit the site of the crash on Friday. Air Algerie's last major accident was in 2003 when one of its planes crashed shortly after take-off from the southern city of Tamanrasset, killing 102 people.

A new route China plans railway to South Asian borders

Train slams into school bus

A train slammed into a school bus in southern India on Thursday, killing at least 19 children and the driver, police said. The bus crossed a railway track at an unmanned crossing in Telangana without stopping to check if the way was clear, said Indian Railways spokesman Anil Kumar Saxena. Police said the bus was carrying 32 children, 12 of whom died on the spot. Seven more died in a nearby hospital, where others are in critical

condition. “Doctors say blood is flowing from their bodies,” said a police official who declined to be identified, as he was not authorised to speak to the media. He put the tally of deaths at 20, including the bus driver. Road and rail accidents are common in India, where rickety infrastructure and weak law enforcement struggle to cope with a surge in traffic and floods of unlicensed drivers. More than 230,000 people were killed on Indian roads in 2010.

ACCESS: China plans to expand its railway to India, Bhutan and Nepal by 2020

As the world’s population continues to connect with others across the globe, China has announced plans to create new railways to the borders of India, Bhutan and Nepal. Plans were reported on Thursday which would see the current line, running to Tibet, extended to the three aforementioned nations, once an extension to a key site in Tibetan Buddhism opens. The construction is expected to be complete by 2020 and will be a key factor in the Chinese government’s plans to boost development. The China-to-Tibet line was officially

opened in 2006, and passes through icy peaks on the Tibetan highlands, reaching top heights of 5,000m above sea level. The Global Times have also reported further plans in regard to current developments which are likely to open next month. Currently, the line runs up to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa but an extension through to Shigatse, the traditional seat of the Tibetan Buddhism’s second-highest figure, is set to be completed. That link is also reportedly scheduled for its own extension during the 20162020 period, to two separate points, one

on the border of Nepal and the other on the border with India and Bhutan. Critics of the railway have argued that the line is likely to bring in migrants who threaten to disrupt the Tibetan’s cultural identity. The Chinese announcement coincides with a drive by India, under its new Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to consolidate its influence with its smaller neighbours. Modi's foreign minister, Sushma Swaraj, headed to Nepal this Friday with a proposed pact to help develop the Himalayan country's hydro-electric power potential high on the agenda.

Cricket in the Commonwealth?

Cricket's absence from Commonwealth Games will continue at least until the 2018 Games in Australia after the International Cricket Council (ICC) turned down an invitation from the governing body of the multi-sport event. South Africa won the gold medal when cricket, in its 50-over format, made its only appearance at the quadrennial event featuring mostly former British colonies during the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games. Prince Tunku Imran of Malaysia, the chairman of the Commonwealth Games Federation,

formally approached the ICC in 2012 to consider participating in the 2014 Glasgow Games, which got underway on Wednesday, and also the next one. “There were discussions about the inclusion of men's and women's Twenty20 cricket in both the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games but neither of these came to fruition,” an ICC spokesperson told Reuters in a statement. “However, cricket is scheduled to feature in the Commonwealth Youth Games in St Lucia in 2017.”

No turbans allowed

Basketball's noheadgear rule has irked the sports minister who has reacted with anger after two Sikh members of the men's national team had to remove their turbans before they were allowed to play in the recent Asia Cup in China. Players are not allowed "Headgear, hair accessories and jewellery" under the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) rules but the Indian duo of Amritpal Singh and Amjyot Singh told local media they never had to

remove turban until the 12th July match against Japan in Wuhan. “We are shocked and outraged. We have spoken to Basketball Federation of India and sought a detailed report from them,” sports minister Sarbananda Sonowal said in a statement. “We have also asked International Olympic Committee (IOC) to issue necessary guidelines/instructions to international sports federations so that such incidents do not take place again,” he said.

Football fixer sentenced A businessman from Singapore has been sentenced to three years in jail after attempting to bribe football referees with prostitutes. Eric Ding, 31, was convicted on 1st July after bribing three Lebanese officials in exchange for fixing football matches they were due to officiate in. Having initially approached the referees in Beirut in 2012, Ding proceeded to make his money through online betting in hopes of leaving less of a paper trail, according to the prosecution. Yet it was the string of lucrative purchases made by the guilty party which ultimately proved his wrongdoings. Amongst the purchases were two expensive cars – an Aston Martin V8 Vantage and Porsche 911, as well as a terraced home in an affluent neighbourhood. Prosecutors had argued that the luxury purchases were also proof of Ding’s involvement in a much wider scale operation in regard to match-fixing activities. Despite the guilty charge, District Judge Toh Yung

GUILTY: Eric Ding has appealed his three year sentence for match fixing after being found guilty by a District Judge in Singapore

Women used as bribes in match fixing case

Cheong, said that there was ‘insufficient evidence’ to show Ding was involved in a large international crime syndicate, and thus his sentence was less than suggested by the prosecution. He said: “The absence of such evidence was one of the reasons why my sentence is below the sentencing range suggested by the prosecution. “If there was indeed evidence that the accused played a major role in a large criminal organisation, I may well have accepted the sentencing range suggested by the prosecution.” Ding’s lawyers say the businessman will appeal the decision and had applied for bail yet the latter request was denied by Deputy Public Prosecutor Alan Loh. “There's no special reason why Ding should be allowed to go on bail,” Mr Loh said. Ding later told gathering reporters that he was looking forward to having his name cleared when the appeal date is decided upon for the High Court. In 2013, Europol investigators claimed that 680 matches worldwide were fixed by syndicates with specific links to Singapore.

Disaster in the sky DEATH: 47 people were killed by the crash whilst 11 more were taken to hospital in serious conditions

Fatal plane crash in Taiwan Just one week after the Malaysian Airline flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, a second passenger plane has crashed in Taiwan killing 47 people. The Taiwan TransAsia Airways plane came down near Magong Airport, Taiwan, on the outlying Penghu Island with 54 passengers and four crew members onboard. An emergency landing attempt had failed with the weather being tipped to have been a factor after a typhoon had passed by earlier in the day. Despite this, Taiwan's civil aviation authorities said the weather had been suitable for flying and an inquiry has now been launched to determine the cause of the crash.

“There were nine flights on the same route between 2pm and 7pm yesterday (Wednesday 23rd July). Only the TransAsia flight crashed,” said Jean Shen, director of the Civil Aeronautics Administration. “The weather reports showed it was totally okay for landing," she said, adding that authorities were not ruling anything out. “We cannot say for sure what went wrong at this point. The flight safety committee has opened an investigation.” Taiwan does have a record of aviation disasters over the last two decades with a total of eight incidents occurring from 2002 to the modern day. Despite recent safety

measures being deployed by the government, this latest crash will raise further questions in regard to the airline’s wellbeing. There was a previous fatal accident in 2002 when a cargo plane carrying two pilots crashed into the sea. Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou said in a statement that all of the island's people were grieving, adding: “Today is a very sad day in the history of Taiwan aviation.” Meanwhile, China's president, Xi Jinping, who is on a Latin America tour, is reported to have been ‘deeply grieved’ after learning of the casualties, the mainland's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said in a statement.

Ship makes final journey

The rusty hulk of the Costa Concordia cruise liner began its journey to the scrapyard on Wednesday after a two-year salvage operation off the Italian island where it capsized two years ago, killing 32 people. Boats sounded horns and church bells rang as a tug boat slowly pulled the wreck of the liner, which was around two-and-a half times the size of the Titanic, away from the island of Giglio, accompanied by a convoy of 14 vessels. Salvage workers gathered in bars at the port, drinking beer and smoking huge

cigars, to celebrate after completing one of the largest maritime salvage operations in history. The 114,500-tonne wreck is due to arrive at a port near Genoa in northern Italy on Sunday, before being broken up for scrap. The oncegleaming white luxury liner sank off the holiday island of Giglio in January 2012 after sailing too close to shore. Over the past week, salvagers have slowly lifted the ship from underwater platforms by pumping air into 30 large metal boxes, or sponsons, attached to the hull.

Jacqueline Fernandez talks about working with Salman Khan

Entertainment

Entertainment

THE LATEST ENTERTAINMENT AND CELEBRITY NEWS FROM BOLLYWOOD & HOLLYWOOD

Q: How did you feel when you were offered the role? A: To be honest, I was in shock and disbelief! That was one of my dreams – to act opposite Salman Khan and seeing my dream come true, it was absolutely amazing. Q: What was it like to work with Salman Khan? A: I have never seen or known Salman before this. The first day of shooting was the most nervewracking day of my life. To be honest, I think everyone was excited but a little bit scared too. We were shooting in Karjat when Salman walked in. It felt like the whole

energy on the set had changed. I turned around and saw Salman walking with his whole crew around. He just looked extremely comfortable and confident. I still had this perception of a super star (that it may be very difficult to work with him) so I did not know what to except. I was afraid that I might do something wrong, but after seven months of filming I can confirm that Salman is very calm and extremely helpful. This was something I did not expect from him. Q: ‘Kick’ is the first movie directed by Sajid Nadiadwala. Do you think he has done a good job?

A: Absolutely! I think he has done the most amazing job with bringing this team together and making sure that the actors feel extremely comfortable, and that the team as a whole works together really well. In my opinion he is captaining the ship really well. Q: Tell us a bit more about your role in ‘Kick’? A: I am playing a psychiatrist called Shaina, who is about to marry Indian police officer Himanshu. Neither one of us are looking forward to the arranged marriage, but when we meet on a train we quickly form a firm friendship. We

start talking but what we don’t realise is that both of us are talking about the same person who has affected our lives profoundly. Q: You have done six films in Bollywood so far and you have never dubbed your lines. For the first time you have dubbed for ‘Kick’. How was the experience? A: Actually, it was very difficult. It was Salman who suggested it to me and I have to say after I was done with it, I felt so great! I was on so much pressure because Salman compared me to Zeenat Aman – even though it was one of the biggest compliments I have ever

received I asked him not to say it again. Q: What was the greatest challenge for your role? A: I think it has to be the fact that it was such a big movie! You don’t want to disappoint anyone; you don’t want to disappoint your director, your co-stars. You just want to give everything to the movie and want to do your best, to make sure your scenes are great. Also, I really wanted to make sure that I got my character right, I listened to Sajid Nadiadwala, went with his brief, did exactly what he asked for.

She will be seen sporting a chic, ‘Boho’ look in the film, as she works vibrant colours and retro styles, such as flared trousers, long skirts and chic crop jackets. A source close to the team said: “Rohit (the director) was very particular

with the kind of look he wanted for Kareena. “While styling for Kareena we had to keep in mind her character, which is of a very bubbly and outgoing Maharashtrian girl, who plays the love interest of Bajirao Singham. We have played with a lot of vibrant colours giving her a very bohemian and chic look.” When quizzed, Tanya Ghavri, stylist for Kareena in the film, said: “This is my first film with Kareena. She is a star and has probably tried all kinds of costumes

since she has been in the film industry! “So for this film particularly, and keeping the story in mind, I have played with the colours. BMW unleashes its first three-cylinder petrol engine

By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk

BMW have just launched its i8 - a plug-in hybrid performance vehicle that uses a three cylinder turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine in a package that takes BMW’s EfficientDynamics philosophy to a new high. Bringing together hallmark BMW dynamics, lightweight design and efficiency, BMW states that the 2+2-seater i8 is a new-generation sports car. The length, width and height of the BMW i8, is in keeping with typical sports car proportions, and its compact construction allows the front and rear sections of the car to be particularly low-slung and thus accentuating the car’s dynamically stretched flanks. The dihedral doors open forwards and upwards, adding intrigue to the design.

Menacingly powerful Bi-turbo twelve-cylinder S 64 AMG Coupe owns the road

The S 65 AMG Coupé is the new twelve-cylinder top-of-the-range model in the S-Class Coupé series. Unique drive comfort, benchmark performance and exquisite appointments are all hallmarks of this two-door Mercedes vehicle. The irresistible contours of the V12 Coupé are accentuated by a host of expressive design elements in highsheen chrome. The AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine, with an output of 630 hp and 1000 newton metres of torque, is unique in its segment, as is the AMG sports suspension, based on ‘Magic Body Control’ with curve tilting function and ‘Road Surface Scan’. Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of MercedesAMG GmbH comments: "There are AMG fans for whom our V12 biturbo engine is the measure of all things. “For this clientele we have developed a unique car in the form of the new S 65 AMG Coupé. From driving dynamics to comfort and

equipment – our new twelve-cylinder coupé surpasses even the highest of expectations." Following the S 65 AMG, the SL 65 AMG and the G 65 AMG, the new S 65 AMG Coupé is the fourth AMG high-performance car with a V12 engine. No other car manufacturer in the world offers such a wide portfolio of twelve-cylinder vehicles as

Mercedes-AMG. Back in 2003 the performance brand of Mercedes-Benz presented a coupé with a powerful V12 biturbo engine in the form of the CL 65 AMG (C215 model series). Its successor, the CL 65 AMG (C216 model series) was available between 2007 and 2014 and was the direct predecessor to the new S 65 AMG Coupé.

The BMW i8 embodies a revolutionary, future-focused interpretation of the driving pleasure, for which BMW is renowned. It was purpose-designed as a plug-in-hybrid sports car offering agile performance, near 50:50 weight distribution and outstanding efficiency. Its also the first BMW production model to be powered by a three-cylinder petrol engine. This highly turbocharged unit is equipped with latest-generation BMW TwinPower Turbo

technology with high-precision injectors positioned between the valves, along with Valvetronic. The low roll torque is further reduced by a balancer shaft, while a multi-stage damper integrated in the automatic transmission ensures very smooth and refined running at low RPM. This three-cylinder combustion engine in the BMW i8 develops 231hp and drives the rear wheels, while a maximum torque of 320Nm is available from 3,700rpm. The car’s second power source is a 96 kW/131hp hybrid synchronous electric motor which sends its power to the front axle.

As well as providing a power boost to assist the petrol engine during acceleration, the electric motor can also power the vehicle by itself with a range in everyday driving of up to 22 miles and a top speed of 75mph on electric power alone, drawing its energy from a lithiumion battery. Enhanced performance Land Rover introduces updates for Range Rover & Range Rover Sport 2015 models

Land Rover is introducing a comprehensive suite of updates to Range Rover and Range Rover Sport for 2015 model year, reaffirming their status as one of the world’s best luxury and premium sporting SUVs, unrivalled in their breadth of capability, both on- and off-road. The potent SDV8 now produces 339PS and 740Nm – a 40Nm increase – with a fuller torque curve from 1700 to 3300rpm thanks to detailed calibration changes. This improves in-gear acceleration by up to 6.5% from fifth to eighth gear, ensuring effortless overtaking ability and enhanced towing capability. The ZF 8HP70 8-speed automatic gearbox has been re-engineered with a revised torque converter incorporating a twin-spring damper. Despite such a large increase in torque, the SDV8’s fuel economy and CO2 emissions remain unchanged at 32.5mpg and 229g/km CO2. Updated puddle lamps now project each vehicle’s silhouette onto the ground

at night to light the way for occupants. Fixed panoramic roofs with power blinds are now available and bring an additional sense of space and light to both vehicles’ luxurious interiors. Meanwhile, for Range Rover, 19-inch alloy wheels with a Satin Dark Grey finish introduce a stylish option for buyers wishing to use smaller wheels where conditions and surfaces may prove more challenging. An updated colour palette features Aruba silver and Kaikoura Stone, and long-wheelbase derivatives can be specified with a sophisticated 22-inch alloy wheel for the first time. Land Rover InControl™ Remote and InControl Secure are now available on Range Rover and Range Rover Sport derivatives as standard. InControl Remote includes an integrated SOS Emergency Call, Optimised Land Rover Assistance and a Smartphone App which enables you to

connect remotely with your vehicle wherever you are. InControl Secure tracks the vehicle should it be stolen. InControl Apps and InControl Wi-Fi are new Land Rover InControl technologies which debut on Range Rover and Range Rover Sport derivatives. InControl Apps allows owners to sync smartphone apps to the vehicle’s touchscreen, and is compatible with Apple and Android smartphones. InControl Wi-Fi provides instant in-car access to a mobile hotspot, which allows up to eight devices to be used simultaneously. The system provides superior signal quality compared to an independent smartphone hotspot using the customer’s existing data plan through a duplicate sim card. The 2015 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are available to order from 16th July.

A Rising Star Eight-year-old fighter brings home medal haul

By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

A young kickboxing star from Bradford, who only took up the sport 14 months ago, has rounded off his first year in style as he clinched gold and silver medals at last week’s European Championships. Eight-year-old Zeeshaan Ramzan travelled to Sheffield last weekend to compete in the WTKA beginner’s tournament. Having already picked up a couple of accolades in club competitions, the young Copthorne Primary School pupil made the step up onto the bigger stage and certainly didn’t disappoint. Initially taking home a Gold medal in the under 23kg, light contact category, Zeeshaan followed this up with a Silver in the under 30kg, points fighting. His father, Mohammed Ramzan, said he was ‘incredibly proud’ of his son and couldn’t believe how fast he has improved in just one year of training. “It was great to watch him succeed and see how happy he was competing,” he said. “He’s not been doing it for long and I thought he might be entered into competitions for experience but never imagined him to become so good so fast. “I am very proud of him and he has got a lot of experience form other tournaments this year which will be very important for him as he grows up.” Zeeshaan is the first member of

Ramadan Runner CONQUERED: Nazim Ali completed the tiresome 10k challenge in just over one hour as he raised money for the Penny Appeal charity

“I was nervous before the actual run because I knew it was going to be warm and I knew it was going to be in the middle of my fasting,” he said. “I had to prepare well for this race and so I did a couple of practice runs in the evening leading up to the run. “Perhaps most importantly I had to make sure that what I was eating before that day’s fast began, would only help me in the run.” Nazim’s diet in the morning was made up of large portions of fruit, including grapes, oranges, bananas and watermelon, as well a substantial serving of almonds. This was all washed down with two glasses of milk, and the same quantity of water, which helped prepare him for the task ahead. During the run, the Penny Appeal Ambassador said he passed three people who had passed out due to the heat yet he was determined to complete the

Some of the biggest monetary donations for the Leeds event were from Bradford-based community organisation, Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA), of which Nazim is general secretary, who raised £650 through a collection, whilst Nazim’s football team, Fairbank United, also pledged £224 after a fundraising Iftar.

Five years ago a teenage girl named Ambreen Sadiq made international headlines after becoming Britain’s first female Muslim boxer. Since then, she has gone on to clinch a national championship and become a role model for aspiring sports women from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. Now 20-years-old, the former Shipley College student is about to embark on her latest journey as she takes a step back from the ring in her new role as boxing coach for a production based on her extraordinary life. Sadiq, from Keighley, has been forced to fight prejudice since she first shot to the public eye in 2009 yet undeterred she continued to compete in the sport she loved. The production, set to be shown inside a real ring in a housing estate gym during this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, will be showcased just weeks after women’s boxing is first competed in at the

The cast of five, aged 16-18, have been training for more than six months to prepare for the eight-day run at Sandy’s Boxing Gym, in Craigmillar, Edinburgh, before the Commonwealth Games. In build up to the release, Sadiq play is brought to England and has spoke of her love for boxing and shown in Bradford and Manchester what people can expect from the in the Autumn. Much of the show has been performance.

Looking back Ambreen says: “I was told by some I was bringing shame on the community but I was determined to break down some barriers.” “This is my first taste of drama,” she said. “I love to have a go at anything different. “Initially I was contacted to do an interview about my life for a production about girls in boxing. “I began to get more involved with the project and am now coaching the actresses so they know

My dad said he knew then that I would like boxing, and it was him that encouraged me at the age of 13 to go and practice down the gym with my brother. “I was told by some I was bringing shame on the community but I was determined to break down some barriers - and it’s my utmost wish that my story will help other young women to do the same! I was lucky to have the support of my family and later, friends and staff at Shipley College.” ‘No Guts, No Heart, No Glory’ is at Sandy’s Boxing Gym in Craigmillar, Edinburgh, from 18th to 25th August.

German Grand Prix brings in more points for Force India

It was another doubles points finish for Force India drivers last weekend as they picked up seven points in the German Grand Prix, whilst Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg came home in top spot. Nico Hulkenberg’s seventh place finish earned him the six points, and helped maintain his impressive record of finishing in a points position in every one of the ten races this season. Only Fernando Alonso can boast the same statistic for this campaign, highlighting once again the great strides of progress that the Force India team has made. It was a testing day for both drivers at the Hockenheimring, with Perez edging Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen into the final point’s position whilst his German colleague was forced to endure a testing engine. Speaking after the race, Hulkenberg praised his team’s efforts in helping to make the recovery as smooth as possible. “It was a difficult race and different to

what we expected, mainly due to the lower temperatures with the track being 20 degrees cooler than on Friday,” he said. “We were expecting a lot of rear degradation, but after a couple of laps it became clear the fronts were the limiting tyres, and that changed the game. “It was a pretty challenging afternoon and, considering how the car felt, I think we got the maximum from the race. “I also had to overcome some engine issues in the middle of the race because there were some hesitations and it was not driving smoothly. “It was a good recovery by the team to solve the issue. It was important to score more points and from that point of view I’m feeling satisfied.” The race will perhaps be most remembered for Felipe Massa’s crash on the first corner which saw the Williams competitor do a full 360 degree flip after contact from McLaren's Kevin Magnussen but thankfully walked away unscathed.

A season to build on

An amateur football team from Bradford, who compete in one of the city’s local leagues, held a special presentation evening last week to congratulate the players on a solid season. Fairbank United held their annual event with local councillor, Amir Hussain, on hand as the guest of honour. Cllr Hussain described his favourite moments from the year, after watching the youth teams compete in their respected leagues, before speaking of the progress the club has made since being established. Individual awards were given out to players who had improved the most over the season, as well as special recognition to volunteers who had played a significant part in helping the team’s coaches. An avid fundraiser from Bradford showed that not even a 19-hour fast can deter him from helping a good cause as he completed last weekend’s Leeds 10k Race for All. 33-year-old Nazim Ali, from Manningham, took on the challenge in hopes of raising money for Syrian refugees, through the charity Penny Appeal, as well as for victims of the ongoing unrest in Palestine. Despite the sweltering heat, which was felt across the country on Sunday, Nazim crossed the finish line in just over one hour and helped raise more than £3,500 in the process. Having already completed marathons, half-marathons and 10k events before, the local resident is somewhat used to long distance challenges yet he explained why last weekend’s run was one of the most mentally challenging yet.
