With more than 800 presents successfully donated and delivered to three West Yorkshire causes, this year’s Give a Gift project has come back ‘bigger and better’ than ever. Throughout the past week, Muslim volunteers have been delivering the bounty of toys to Leeds General Infirmary’s Children’s Heart Fund, Martin House Children’s Hospice, and, for the first time, Bradford Hospitals Children’s Charity, as part of their Eid celebrations. An amazing response to the toy appeals saw almost twice as many gifts donated this year than last, as the Muslim community aimed to play a wider role in mainstream society. Launched last year, the Give a Gift initiative was the brainchild of a group of community volunteers from Leeds who wanted to do something special during Eid celebrations Rifhat Malik, Give a Gift ambassador, has seen the project go from strength-to-strength since last year’s toy donations and

UNITED: Amjad Pervez, CEO of Seafresh, and Rabbi Jason Kleiman, from the Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue, say the flag shows support for all the innocent Palestinian and Israeli civilians killed in the conflict

FLYING: The Palestine flag can be seen outside the City Hall

Palestine flag flies high in Bradford By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Visitors to Bradford this past week will have seen a different flag flying high at the City Hall, as the colours of Palestine were raised in the city centre. The flag recognises the suffering and deaths of the thousands of innocent people caught up in the conflict in Gaza, both Israeli and Palestinian. Amjad Pervez, CEO of Seafresh, was proud to see the flag fly high after helping to spearhead the campaign to push through the motion. He explained the importance of showing support for Palestine by creating a single-platform for all people, from all backgrounds, to address the humanitarian issue. “The Palestinian Flag should fly in isolation to symbolise its truly isolated and unsupported position, compared with Israel, so the people of the world understand the false and utterly biased misinformation that is being peddled by a well resourced and well managed PR machine,” he said. He continued by explaining how powerful Israel’s actions truly are and what they could accomplish by pushing for peace. Mr Pervez added: “My above narrative is an attempt to show the friends of Israel, and I include myself in that, that the burden of responsibility lies with the strong not with the weak. The peace dividend for Israel is much greater than Palestine. “The doors of nearly twobillion Muslim consumers would suddenly open and the whole of humanity will be forever thankful
to Israel. “In one move you would cure the cancer of terrorism from the body of humanity and your children and grandchildren may lead peaceful and prosperous lives as preached by the Abrahamic religions of both people. “After all the Jews and the
peace and we need ceasefire. “A mother’s grief is the same whether that person is Palestinian or an Israeli and that is the message that must be put across. “If we, here in our little corner of West Yorkshire, are able to help promote inter-faith cohesion hopefully it will be seen on a wider scale.”
“In one move you would cure the cancer of terrorism from the body of humanity and your children and grandchildren may lead peaceful and prosperous lives as preached by the Abrahamic religions of both people.” Arabs are Semitic cousins.” Earlier this week, Mr Pervez appeared on a radio talk show along with Rabbi Jason Kleiman, of the Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue, Leeds. The pair both openly called for a ceasefire in Gaza and Israel, showing their inter-faith relations in West Yorkshire were strong and according to Rabbi Kleiman, will only be improved in upcoming weeks. He said: “When we were on the radio we both agreed that we would not be taking sides because that is not what we need. We need
Rabbi Kleiman added his approval to see the Palestine flag flying in Bradford as it represents all those people affected by the conflict. “Just because the Palestine flag has been raised in Bradford, it does not mean the city is antiIsrael,” he said. “It represents all those innocent civilians who have been killed in the ongoing conflict, both Israelis and Palestinians. It may be a complicated situation over there but what is not complicated to understand is that we all just want peace.”

United for Gaza
July 2014 - 4th Edition
Over a thousand people gathered outside Dewsbury Town Hall on Saturday 26th July, chanting messages of solidarity with the Palestinian people to protest against Israel’s aggression on the Gaza strip. With a steady flow of people joining in, the crowd swelled to 1,200 at its peak. Friends of Al-Aqsa, a nonprofit NGO established in the UK for around 17 years, organised the peaceful static

demo and invited vibrant speakers from a mixture of backgrounds. The organisation, which lends itself to defending the human rights of Palestinians and protecting the al-Aqsa Sanctuary in Jerusalem, arranged for speakers such as Nick Ruff (Stop the War Coalition), Jane Gregory (Palestine Solidarity Campaign), Mike Wood MP for Batley and Spen, Cllr Darren O’Donovan (Labour) and Iqbal Bhana OBE on the day. A volunteer for Friends of Al Aqsa (Dewsbury and Batley) said: “It was great seeing so many people joining the protest. Everyone needs to know what actually is going on in illegally occupied Palestine. We hope this protest becomes the means of people becoming active in what is actually genocide of innocent women and children.” He went on to say that there is a lot of public anger about what is happening in Gaza. “Israel’s impunity is no longer acceptable and the general
public are no longer willing to sit back and let it happen,” he said. “This protest was a massive show of support for the rule of law and the right of the Palestinians to live in freedom and out of occupation.” Bradford activist, Shamsuddin Ahmed (Friends of Al-Aqsa) commented: “How can you not be moved? “Not every Israeli is a Jew and not every Jew is a Zionist… our cause is about bringing an end to this crime against humanity which is being perpetrated in the name of Zionist ideology.” The organisation said the purpose of the demonstration was to ‘protest both Israel’s massacres in Gaza and the Cameron government’s support for Israel’s war crimes’. A roll call of the deceased children was read out by local school children and a minute’s silence for all the deceased was observed immaculately. Friends of Al-Aqsa would like to thank all the authorities involved in the successful protest including Kirklees Council, West Yorkshire Police and the Councillors who assisted in making this event a success.

Mosque Bust-up By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A disturbance at a Bradford Mosque last weekend resulted in police being called to the place of worship as the Eid festivities began in a shameful manner. Muslims attending the Jamia Masjid Hanfia, in Manningham, on the night of Sunday 27th July argued about the first sighting of the moon and the correct date to start celebrating the annual festival. It is reported that a group of Muslims interrupted the Taraweeh prayers inside the Mosque as they believed Eid was to be celebrated the next day. The Taraweeh prayer is only carried out during the night before a day of fast and therefore Muslims, who believed Eid was the next day (Monday 28th July), were not required to do the prayer. West Yorkshire Police confirmed that they were called to a disturbance in Ambler Street at 9.58pm on Sunday 27th July, with all parties spoken to yet no offences disclosed. The events surprisingly occurred despite the fact that Muslims celebrating Eid on a different day in recent years has become somewhat common sight.
WARNING: Zulfiqar Karim, secretary of the Bradford Council of Mosques, says resorting to violence within a mosque is ‘unacceptable’

‘Shame’ as Eid argument requires police intervention
Zulfiqar Karim, secretary of the Bradford Council of Mosques, condemned any sort of violence within a mosque and said it was imperative that people learned from this year’s mistake.
“Everybody has the right to their own beliefs and school of thoughts regardless of where they are from,” he said. “It is imperative to respect this as Muslims. “The one thing we do not want
is for people to take the law into their own hands, whether that is either Islamic law or the law of the land. “Resorting to violence within a is absolutely not mosque acceptable.” Eid is celebrated around the world upon the first sighting of the moon following the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Muslims in the UK rely on scholars in the closest Islamic country to tell them when the moon has been sighted, so their month-long fasting can come to an end. Some scholars opt to choose to follow the advice of Morocco, whilst others pick Saudi Arabia. This often leads to Eid being celebrated in Muslim communities over two different days as the same moon can often be visible in one nation and not the other. Mr Karim added that it was now important for scholars and mosque committees to come together to discuss the events and make sure it never happens again. “What we need to do now is open up dialogues and the scholars come together to discuss the matter in the right manner,” he said. “Any differences should be discussed in a proper and sensible way.”

Traders at one of Europe’s largest indoor markets have labelled plans to slash rent by up to 20 per cent as ‘ridiculous’ as stalls continue to lose business. Leeds’ Kirkgate Market has suffered a fall in clientele since a nearby car park was closed to make way for the newly developed Victoria Quarter. And now, with Leeds City Council planning to develop the existing site with a £12million refurbishment, market traders have voiced their concerns around the lack of custom they are receiving. Mr Bhardwaj has been working at the site for the past 15 years whilst his wife also runs a stall from the same premises. Following the closure of the car park, he explains how his stall has suffered a fall in sales by as much as 70 per cent with customers not wanting to ‘carry their shopping from one side of the city to the other’. “What they (Leeds City Council) have done to the market and what they are offering with this rent reduction is ridiculous,” he said. “They were warned well in advance that this would happen but they didn’t listen and now they are just trying to whitewash it all by giving us 20 per cent off. “We’ve lost so much business because people just don’t come in
here anymore.” Mr Bhardwaj added that he also believes that the fall in rent will be ‘pointless’ by October when the annual service charges are introduced. Also unhappy with the 20 per cent offer is trader, Esmat Mohamadi, who has been running a stall selling decorative furnishings and ornaments for the past six years. The loss in business since the car park closure has been ‘huge’ he says, adding that it is a ‘scary situation’ to be in. “We have lost around 50 or 60 per cent of our business and it is scary,” he said. “People are struggling to pay rent but we have no other option but to keep going on. “I don’t think the cut is enough because the rent is already quite high and business has always been tough. “Now there are no customers and there is no trade yet at the end of the day we just have to keep working hard to pay the bills.” The market will begin its refurbishment in August with substantial upgrades to all utilities such as the market’s Victorian drainage being replaced, ventilation improved and the sprinkler system and electrics upgraded. Affected traders have been offered alternative accommodation for a period of around three months in refurbished empty market units,
on the existing Butchers’ Row. Councillor Richard Lewis, executive member for transport and the economy, described the refurbishment as ‘exciting’ and hoped the cut in rents would ease traders’ concerns. He said: “While this is one of the most exciting developments at Kirkgate Market for many years, we know it’s going to be a challenge. “As well as being about the refurbishment of a much loved Leeds landmark, it’s also about people and their livelihoods and the long-term commercial success of the market. “We’re determined to find the right balance that allows businesses to trade while working on the fabric of the building and keeping the long-term goal in mind. “We’re listening to traders’ concerns, both in respect of changes already experienced and what is yet to come, and that is why we’re proposing a year-long cut to rents.” He added: “We need to be realistic about what we can achieve in managing the refurbishment of a historic building in a live market environment. “The most effective and efficient way to get works done on fish and game row is to do it all in one go. Relocating traders for around three months whilst keeping them in the market where customers can find them, is a practical solution.”

Pupils from across Leeds have been picking up their pens to design burglary awareness posters as part of West Yorkshire Police's major crime fighting initiative, Operation Viper. Budding artists from Quarry Mount, Little London and Rosebank Primary schools worked with their Safer Schools Officer to design posters that featured crime prevention advice and will be used on West Yorkshire Police's Twitter and Facebook accounts. One winner and two second place prizes were picked at each school, with each frontrunner receiving a £20 shopping voucher and the runner-ups earning themselves £10 in vouchers. Nine-year-old Nyomi Bembridge from Woodhouse was the winner from Quarry Mount School, whilst eightyear-old Frishtah Yaqubi picked up the prize from Little London and eight-yearold Bhumika Patel, from Burley, the winner at

Safer Schools Officer Rachel Smith, who organised the project, said she was delighted to see the children respond in such an enthusiastic manner and praised the level of work produced. She said: ‘‘Operation Viper is targeting the county's most prolific and persistent criminals and is already

It was very difficult to pick the winners.’’ Head teacher of Little London Primary School, Mrs Jill Wood, added: ‘‘I know how much the children enjoy the time they have with our Safer Schools Officer Rachel and that's clearly reflected in the effort and creativity you can see in the winning designs. ‘‘This type of project and the work of Safer Schools Officers in general helps to provide young students with additional guidance and support within the school environment whilst also helping to form long-lasting and vital relationships between students, schools and local police.’’

100 years on
An act of remembrance and reflection will take place at Victoria Gardens next week, forming part of a programme of events in Leeds marking the beginning of the First World War one hundred years ago. Held on 4th August 2014, members of the public are invited from 10.45pm to 11.15 pm to gather at Victoria Gardens to remember and reflect on the moment when the declaration of war was signed in 1914. There will be readings, a short item of music and the illumination and then dimming of the First World War Light specially created by the Leeds Lights Team which is part of the national initiative ‘Lights Out’. As part of the ‘Lights Out’ campaign, people are being invited to leave on or turn off a single light or candle between 10pm and 11pm. The inspiration for this initiative is taken from the famous statement by the foreign secretary of the time Sir Edward Gray who said: “The lamps are going out all over Europe: we shall not see them lit again in our life time.” Asian

Zayn Malik death threats One Direction singer Zayn Malik has had a deluge of murder threats and messages of complaint on Twitter for supporting the #FreePalestine campaign. Zayn probably knew his protest tweet was the right decision and would cause a stir when he fired it off to his 13 million followers. The hashtag has been trending for weeks now, and Zayn hit a massive 130,000 retweets and 138,000 favourites in a matter of minutes, and within 24 hours accumulated 230,000 retweets and favourites. The popstar's dedicated fans are an engaged bunch on social media. Even a simple smiley emoticon issued from his account clocks up 180,000 retweets. However, it soon became apparent that not everyone agreed with his sentiments on Palestine, as it’s earned the young singer rebukes, abuse and even death threats. Angry Israeli fans have sent him some heavily furious and alarmingly violent responses calling for him to ‘kill himself’ or to let them kill him instead.
The death threats even came from former fans, such as one unnamed person who continued to tweet Malik and anyone supporting him. Of course, Malik isn’t the first famous face to tweet about the conflict. Rihanna forced a similar reaction when she posted #FreePalestine via her official account, only to delete it minutes later. The current Gaza conflict has resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 Palestinians and around 60 Israelis. It's also caused a spike in online abuse and arguments. Several racist hashtags have been trending for days.
Many social media users are sharing graphic images of victims on both sides. Interestingly, many celebrities have been wary of commenting on the issue, spiking resentment and anger amongst their fan bases. On Facebook, one person said: “Shocking how our Asian music artists and Bollywood celebrities have stayed away from voicing their opinion about the mass killing of Palestinians. Disgusted! If you can’t support your fans – why should your fans support you?”

REPORT IT! Campaign launched to see anti-Muslim crimes reported
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
The Leeds-based Building Bridges project will be running a four-month campaign as of August to encourage individuals who have been victims of anti-Muslim hate to report the crime. Following a conference held last November as part of the national ‘Islamophobia Awareness Month’, the West Yorkshire Police & Crime Commissioner, Mark BurnsWilliamson, pledged to look into recording anti-Muslim hate within a separate crime flag under the Religion/Faith strand. West Yorkshire Police currently monitor and record the five strands of hate crime for mandatory reporting to the Home Office. Strands are based on hostility or hatred based on a victim’s actual or perceived disability, sexual orientation, race, faith or a person identifying as transgender. West Yorkshire Police is now planning to include aggravated subcategories across the five strands with Anti-Islam to be flagged under
the faith category. This will be part of a wider Hate Crime publicity campaign to be launched in Autumn 2014. Tafazal Mohammad, Project Coordinator said: “This is great news for victims and we want to ensure that the general public are now made aware of the new categories and that this increases their confidence in reporting hate crime.” A campaign has now been launched called: ‘Report It!’ which will continue for the next four months leading up to Islamophobia Awareness Month (IAM) in
Keighley, Huddersfield and Batley. “There has been a great interest from Muslim individuals and organisations to do something on a larger scale this year across West Yorkshire,” Mr Mohammad added. “This interest and concern for the rise in antiMuslim hate crime has led to the formation of the ‘Muslim Community Safety Forum’. MCSF aims to primarily look at how Islamophobia can be addressed across West Yorkshire.” The Building Bridges, is a project

Q&A with your property law solicitor
NOcaCola
Bradford business removes drink from shelves for Palestine
DIN Solicitors specialise in various areas of law. This week our solicitor will be discussing frequently asked questions in relation to residential conveyancing.
• What is conveyancing? Conveyancing is the term given to the process of transferring legal ownership of land and property. Conveyancing can include sale, purchase, and re-mortgaging.
• How long does conveyancing take? The conveyancing process does not have a fixed duration. Much depends on whether or not there is a mortgage, the cooperation of all parties involved etc. A straightforward conveyance where there are no major problems can be completed within 6-12 weeks. However please note this is a guide only; some conveyances may take longer and some may be completed sooner.
• How much does conveyancing cost? There are two costs – one is the legal fee and one is a fee for disbursements (see below). The legal fee will depend on the purchase/sale price of the property and whether a mortgage is involved. We are able to provide a fixed fee which is very reasonable and competitive.
NO MORE: Pakeezah Superstores Ltd CEO, Tariq Haq, pours Coca-Cola down the drain with his daughter, and floor manager Zafar, after deciding to stop selling the famous beverage
One of Bradford’s most popular supermarkets has made a bold stand in their support of Gaza by removing one of the most renowned products from their shelves. As of last week, Pakeezah Gourmet, also known as Pakeezah Superstores Ltd, will no longer be stocking or selling Coca-Cola products in any of its stores, in the first of what could be many ‘product boycotts’. Pakeezah Gourmet, The Curry Counter and Leban’Eats are the three sites which will be affected by the decision due to the drink producers close ties with Israel. Coca-Cola currently own dairy farms on occupied Israeli settlements of Shadmot Mechola in the Jordan Valley, West Bank, as well as a plant in the industrial zone of Katzerin on the occupied Golan Heights. The Bradford business made the decision last week and CEO, Tariq Haq, says it may lose them some business but it was a ‘positive step’. “Apart from donations, this is another way we can
help the people of Gaza,” he said. “It’s not a huge step but it’s a positive step, which will lead towards a greater outcome. “The inevitable loss of sales, which would accumulate to a six-figure sum, will be a small price to pay if it results in lessening the burden of even one child in Gaza.” Mr Haq added that CocaCola may be just the first of many items which may no longer be seen on the stores’ shelves in the near future. He added: “Moving forward, we shall be looking at our existing buying habits and also the ethical practices of our suppliers. “We will also be looking at other products in store to see how we can further help the cause. “This is not a publicity stunt, but a show of unity to the people of Palestine. We sincerely hope you can support us.” As of Monday 28th July, all future orders of the beverage had been cancelled by Pakeezah Superstores Ltd, whilst existing stock will be returned shortly.
• What are disbursements? Disbursements are expenses paid to third parties and which are incurred in the conveyancing process (e.g. property searches, Land Registry fees etc). We have excellent contacts with search providers and can obtain competitive quotes for search fees.
• What are the different types of searches? The main searches include the following: • Local Authority Search – this reveals the property’s planning history and any future planning proposals likely to impact the property. • Drainage Search – this tells you whether the drains run into a private or public sewer. • Land Registry Search – this reveals if there are any undisclosed mortgages on the property. • Land Charges Search – this is usually required by the mortgage lender to ensure you are not bankrupt. • Environmental Search – this reveals if there are any waste disposal sites in the locality and whether there is any risk of flooding, subsidence etc. There may be other searches which may be applicable to your conveyance. Please contact us and we will advise you further.

‘Who are you really talking to?’
A new hard-hitting campaign has been launched aimed at preventing children in Leeds from falling prey to online sexual predators posing as someone else. The ‘Who are you really talking to?’ campaign looks to make young people in Leeds more aware of the dangers of chatting online to people they don't know. The Leeds Safeguarding Children Board and Leeds City Council have joined forces with West Yorkshire Police to launch the campaign during the school holidays, when more young people are expected to be using social media and internet chat rooms. An animated image has been developed, which shows a young person talking online to someone who they believe to be their own age. But the image morphs into an internet troll, representing an individual pretending to be someone else with the intention of online grooming. Asian

Torched homes mare Eid celebrations DEVASTATING: A grandmother and two of her grandchildren were killed in the attack in Pakistan after a youth was accused of putting a blasphemous post on facebook
As people across the world celebrate their Eid, one community group were left in mourning as three members of their faith were killed by extremists in Pakistan. Two children, aged just sevenyears-old and eight-months, from the Ahymadiyya Muslim Community were amongst the casualties in a house fire which also saw their grandmother killed by smoke inhalation. A pregnant mother of seven months also suffered a miscarriage following an attack on their homes whilst eight other women and children are being treated for burns.
Members of the Ahmadiyya Community in West Yorkshire have been paying their respects to those attacked this past week during their Eid celebrations on Wednesday. Anti-Ahmadi extremists in the area of Kachi-Pump, Gujranwala, torched a total of eight homes in the attack earlier in the evening of Monday 28th July as families were forced to evacuate. It is believed the homes were targeted following allegations of a Facebook post by a youth member of the Ahmadi community yet the allegations were not proven. Following the attack, the Press
Community left shocked following killing of three members in Pakistan
Secretary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Abid Khan said: “Ahmadi Muslims across the world have been left shocked and utterly grieved by this horrific and devastating attack in Pakistan. It is impossible to comprehend the levels of hatred and wickedness that could motivate anyone towards such merciless brutality. “An eight month old baby girl and her seven year old sister have been killed along with their grandmother. A pregnant woman has lost her child. A number of others have been seriously injured and all of this simply because they were peaceful and law-abiding
Ahmadi Muslims. “The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community will not ever take to the streets or respond with aggression. We respond only by bowing down before God Almighty, seeking His protection and help and affirming the Quranic injunction that ‘Surely, to Allah we belong and to Him shall we return’. “It is hoped that the international community and media takes full and proper notice of these brutal and senseless murders. If such hatred and sectarianism is allowed to continue then it is inevitable that further tragedies will occur.”

Account closed Charity left searching for answers after bank says ‘no’
A UK-based Islamic charity were given an unexpected surprise earlier this week after being told their bank accounts would be shut down in two months time. The Ummah Welfare Trust, which has a base on Manningham Road, Bradford, is currently in its busiest period for donations with many Muslims giving generously during the time of Ramadan and Eid. However, with the charity’s funding currently being handled by HSBC, the banking group has taken the unusual decision to shut down the account in the near future. Representatives from the charity have claimed that this has happened because of the current situation in Gaza and the fact some funds go towards projects in Palestine. Mohammad Ahmad, Trustee for the Ummah Welfare Trust, says it is disappointing to see the action taken and adds that it is not the

first time in the charity’s history. “Our understanding is that the account was closed because of links with the Gaza war,” he said. “It has happened previously during another conflict in the same area so it is disappointing to see it happen again.” The charity will now be changing banks to continue with their relief efforts and Mr Ahmad says it may now be time to take action against the bank. “Currently we are still waiting to see what is going to happen next,” he explained. “If we do in fact have to move banks we will because we will continue to support these causes. “Perhaps if people did boycott
the bank then they would get the message that their actions are immoral but we first have to see what kind of support we get.” A statement, provided by HSBC, read: “We are not able to comment on any customer relationship. In general terms, decisions to end a customer relationship are not taken lightly, but are absolutely not based on the race or religion of a customer. “Discrimination against customers on grounds of race or religion is immoral, unacceptable and illegal, and HSBC has comprehensive rules and policies in place to ensure race or religion are never factors in banking decisions.”

TRIUMPHANT: (l-r) Umar Rafique Students' Union Vice President, Piers Telemacque NUS Vice President of Society and Citizenship, Students’ Union President Fatima Sohail, Neil MacKenzie and Student Representation Coordinator Laura Pike
Student Union comes out on top By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Bradford College Students’ Union has triumphed in the National Union of Students Awards 2014 winning the accolade for ‘Campaign of the Year’. The union took the honours at a glittering awards ceremony held in Bolton’s Reebok Stadium. The win comes after Bradford College Students’ Union launched the campaign ‘Save Bradford Youth Service’, following the announcement by Bradford Council in November 2013 that it proposed to reduce the Youth Service budget by
79 per cent in the budget for 2014-17. This would decimate the service to only statutory levels, in a city that will become the youngest in Europe by 2020. Bradford College led a campaign coalition that successfully saved over £2m of the Youth Service’s budget, reducing the cut to 29 per cent, in line with other services in the authority. From nothing Bradford College Students’ Union had created the biggest campaign the city had seen in years. During the campaign, the Students’ Union hosted question and answer sessions with the leader of the council and local MPs, held demonstrations and engaged over 4,000 people through a social media campaign, including the
magician Dynamo. Commenting on the latest win Umar Rafique said: “We would like to thank everyone that participated in the campaign and we were delighted in winning this award. “The campaign was directly led by young people and this was a great achievement for all those involved, especially the youth and students from around the city and everyone else who came together to fight the cuts to the Youth Service. “This demonstrates the impact and change that can be achieved when people from all backgrounds and circumstances unite and take a stand. Saving the majority of the youth service was extremely important for the future of Bradford and the Youth Service.”
Congrats Crossflatts Pupils across the UK may be enjoying their summer holidays at the moment yet that has not stopped a Bingley-based school from achieving a stellar Ofsted report. Crossflatts Primary School was judged to be good with outstanding features following its latest inspection. Inspectors praised the leadership team and purposeful governing body whose drive and ambition had led to ‘rapidly accelerating’ pupil progress and the ‘quality of teaching and learning improving strongly’. In a glowing report the inspectors found many outstanding elements including: ‘Pupils’ achievement in reading is
outstanding’, ‘the quality of teaching is good and sometimes outstanding’, ‘disabled pupils and those with special educational needs, including those in the Designates Special Provision (DSP) unit, make outstanding progress during their time in school’, and ‘the behaviour of pupils is outstanding’. The detailed report adds that pupils take pride in their work and feel safe in the school environment. It also praises the close working relationship the school has with parents and the ways in which parents are kept fully informed. Headteacher, Hilary Craven, said she was delighted to receive the rating and thanked all stakeholders
for their amazing support. She said: “It reflects how we see and feel about the school and is testimony to the hard work and dedication of pupils, staff, governors, parents and the wider community. “This is an excellent way to finish our academic year and we are all looking forward to returning to school in September and continuing the good work.” Cindy Peek, Bradford Council’s Deputy Director of Children’s Services, added:”This is an excellent Ofsted report and a fantastic achievement for Crossflatts Primary School and all those who have brought about this positive outcome should be justly very proud.”

Honorary Doctors University acknowledges Leeds’ finest in graduation ceremony
An Imam, a Sikh Leader and a community champion lead the way in this year’s honorary doctorates list who were commended this past week as part of Leeds Metropolitan’s summer graduations. Amongst the total 17 recipients of this year’s awards was Hamara Healthy Living Centre’s CEO, Hanif Malik, who was commended for his work in helping to establish the largest ethnic minority organisation in the voluntary and community sector in Leeds. Mr Malik worked closely with the university earlier this year on a project aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of taxi drivers by supporting them to make positive changes to their diet, exercise and lifestyle. On receiving his honorary degree,

the Leeds resident said he was ‘honoured’ and ‘privileged’ to be commended by the educational institution. “My advice to students graduating today is to aim high and never let people tell you that you can’t achieve your goals because I’d like to think I’ve proven people wrong over the years,” he said. “Regardless of your background, if you aim high and you’re committed and passionate about what you do, you can get there. “Leeds Met were involved with the Hamara Centre right from the outset in terms of its development so I think it’s not an exaggeration to say that without the input of the University, we may never have had the Hamara Centre.”
Also accepting his award on the same day was Imam of Leeds Makkah Masjid, Qari Asim MBE. Mr Asim has worked tirelessly to build bridges between communities in Leeds since the 7/7 terror attacks and was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Laws for his contribution to public life. On receiving his award, he commented: “I am absolutely delighted and incredibly humbled to have received this prestigious honour from a distinguished institution. “This honorary Doctorate gives me a renewed sense of purpose to work even harder to enhance community relations.”

Murder charge
SENTENCED: Danish Irfan will spend at least 16 years in prison before he can be considered for release after being found guilty of the murder of his wife, Ridda Zanab, last year
Bradford man sentenced over wife’s death By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A husband, who fled to Pakistan after killing his partner, has been found guilty of murder following a trial at Bradford Crown Court earlier this week. 22-year-old Danish Irfan had already admitted to the manslaughter of his wife, Ridda Zanab, last year and it took the jury just two hours to decide upon the guilty verdict. Irfan will serve a minimum of 16 years before his release can be considered. Police were called to the couple’s house in Alford Terrace in the early hours of Monday 4th November last
year, after receiving a report of concern for safety. When they gained entry to the property, they found the body of his 21-year-old wife in an upstairs bedroom. She was pronounced dead at the scene and it was later revealed that she had been struck with a claw hammer after Irfan found a text on her phone from another man. Detailed enquiries by West Yorkshire Police's Protective Services Department revealed that the guilty party then fled to Pakistan, which led to the issue of an international arrest warrant. Irfan returned to the UK in February and was arrested on arrival at Manchester International Airport.
Law apprentices
A new apprenticeship scheme is set to give Leeds’s fledgling legal eagles the chance to launch their careers with some of the city’s prestigious law firms. The Leeds Legal Apprenticeship Scheme has seen Leeds City Council team up with BPP Professional Education and the Financial and Business Services network in a bid to give talented young people a chance to learn on the job from top legal professionals. The scheme was launched at an event in Leeds which was attended by local companies, training providers and young apprentices. The Legal Apprenticeship Scheme will help other local law firms establish their own apprenticeship programmes then help them to recruit and train young people through different levels of legal qualifications. Leeds is the country’s largest legal centre outside London and last year 36 per cent of the city’s 6,850 apprenticeships were in business administration and law.
Speaking after sentencing, Detective Superintendent Mark Ridley, of West Yorkshire Police's Protective Services Department, said: “Irfan brutally murdered his wife in the family home in Bradford and then fled to Pakistan in a bid to evade capture. “Following work with the international authorities, we were able to secure his voluntary return to the country to face justice. “He has today been found guilty of murdering Ridda Zanab and has been sentenced accordingly. “Our sympathies remain with Ridda's family and especially her young daughter, who will sadly grow up without her mother.”
Six of the best
Lister Park, Manningham; Peel Park, Bolton; Roberts Park, Saltaire; Harold Park, Low Moor; St Ives Estate, Bingley; and Central Park, Haworth; have all received a prestigious Green Flag award for their fantastic green spaces. The Green Flag Award scheme is run by the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of the Department for Communities and Local Government, and is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK. Coun Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council’s Executive member for Environment and Sport said: “This result is terrific news. “Congratulations go to the hard-working staff who look after our great parks throughout the year, as well as the wonderful volunteer groups of ‘friends’ who contribute so much to them.”

HAPPY: Children and volunteers celebrate the return of their summer school earlier this week at the Hindu Temple on Leeds Road, Bradford
Community Summer School By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A popular summer school project has made its return to Bradford this month as the city’s youths are given the chance to enjoy alternative activities this summer. Hosted at the Shree Lakshmi Narayan Hindu Temple, on Leeds Road, dozens of children regularly attend the activities which are not only enjoyable but also include academic incentives. The project runs every weekday and is hosted by volunteer teachers and parents who give up their own time for the benefit of the children. It was initially launched by Bobita Verma, with the support of her husband, Rohit, in 2008 with the hopes of giving children the chance to get involved with something fun in the summer. Yet, after being forced to cancel the project in recent years, it has returned in 2014 to the delight of many parents and children alike. With three children of their own, Mrs Verma explained why it was so important to have this kind of facility on offer in the city for all children to use. “We started about five years ago because none of our kids have anywhere to go in the summer and we have this brand new building available which can be perfect for all the younger children,” she said. “After being approached by a number of people to restart the programme this year we thought why not. It does takes a lot of time up but it is definitely worth it in the end. “We don’t make any sort of profit here with every penny

being put back into the kids.” Amongst the many lessons, children focus on handwriting, spelling and maths, with fully qualified teachers on hand to provide support. This is all of course coupled with fun activities including sports, crafts and even day-trips. Mrs Verma, who is also a supply teacher at primary schools during the academic year, added that it was very important that all children had the chance to get involved. “Without the help of the fantastic volunteers and families
all this would not be possible so they do deserve a lot of credit. “Here at the temple, families are happy to let their children spend the day because they know it is a safe, community place,” she said. “Also, with it costing only a pound or so a day, it means that parents with more than one child, who might be working or can’t afford to take their children away, can afford to send them here.” To find out more about the project simply call in to the Hindu temple on Leeds Road.

COURT: Aisha Ali-Khan was given a 12-month conditional discharge whilst her husband, Mohammed Afiz Khan, was sentenced to six month in prison
Dhesi Grill S I M P L Y
D H E S I R A B L E
Former MP aide discharged Husband and wife appear in court The former parliamentary secretary of Bradford West MP George Galloway has been discharged after data protection and misconduct charges. Aisha Ali-Khan, who worked with the Respect MP, pleaded guilty to a charge of encouraging her police officer husband to obtain emails without consent. Her husband, former detective inspector Mohammed Afiz Khan, who was head of the Muslim contact unit at the Metropolitan Police's counter-terrorism unit SO15, pleaded guilty to two misconduct charges. He was sentenced to six months in prison at Southwark Crown Court. Last month Ali-Khan admitted that on or about 24th August 2012 she encouraged Khan to obtain personal data relating to people she believed had sent emails. She previously pleaded not guilty to a second charge of encouraging misconduct in a public office. Khan was originally charged with two counts of misconduct in a public office and four counts of data protection offences
between May and September 2012. In December he pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct in that he disclosed restricted information he had obtained relating to the arrest of radical Muslim cleric Anjem Choudary to Ali-Khan while she was employed by Mr Galloway on or around May 22 2012. He also admitted a charge of misconduct relating to obtaining CCTV from South Yorkshire Police that he had no authority or good reason to obtain between 16th March and 30th April 2012. Khan pleaded not guilty to two data protection charges but did not enter pleas to the other two. He was suspended from the Met after being charged in July last year and has now been dismissed. A Met Police spokesman previously said their arrests came as a result of an investigation by the directorate of professional standards into a complaint from a member of the public about the actions of the officer.
The beach returns
The fun and atmosphere of an unforgettable trip to the beach is once again set to transform a popular city centre square next month. Following a successful debut last year, Leeds own ‘City Beach’ will be returning for a second summer season to Millennium Square from Saturday 9th August until
Sunday 31st August. Organised by International Funfairs in partnership with Leeds City Council, City Beach will be open daily from 10.30am to 7pm. Set to take centre stage this year is a traditional Ferris-wheel which will overlook the real sand area surrounded with boardwalk
style decking, deck chairs and palm trees. Once again a wide range of themed activities, rides and stalls will also be available for all the family to enjoy including ‘Bamboo Bungees’ trampolines, a tropical jungle adventure funhouse, beach slide, ‘Waikiki’ cars, seaside carousel plus water attraction favourites; Pirate boats, Aqua Walker balls and new water cannons.

Bounty of food collected during holy month
Ramadan Foodbank With the importance of foodbanks continuing to grow for families and individuals across the whole of the UK, a team of volunteers from a Muslim youth organisation have been helping a local cause during Ramadan. Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association (AMYA) in Huddersfield responded to a call from one of their nearby foodbanks by raising hundreds of pounds to help feed some of society’s most vulnerable. The Welcome Centre, at Lord Street, Huddersfield, hands out food parcels to those in need and had issued a donation wish list to the community to help keep the project running. Items such as cereal, jam, tins of vegetables and baby talc were included as necessities and so the AMYA team made it their mission to ‘tick off’ the items with a bounty of food. AMYA Community Champion and Welfare representative, Nadeem Uddin, explained: “Looking after our neighbours is

Give generously AND carefully As the number of fundraisers and charity collectors on the streets of West Yorkshire increases during Ramadan, the county’s police force is offering a reminder to those people to follow established guidelines for giving and receiving donations. A small rise in the number of public complaints has been reported by West Yorkshire police in regard to the impromptu street collections over the past few weeks. With the current events in Gaza and Syria, coinciding with the month of Ramadan, it has lead to increased concern among l o c a l
communities, along with increased appeals and fundraising. While spontaneous street collections are mostly well intentioned, it can often be difficult for the public to verify that they are giving to a genuine charity. There are laws around collecting money for charity in public which are there to protect donors and make sure that the money raised goes to a genuine charitable cause. Police officials are now offering the following advice to both collectors and fundraisers: Be careful when responding to emails or clicking links within them to ensure that they are genuine. If you have any concerns about the legitimacy of a request for donations that appear to come from a charity, don’t hesitate to contact t h a t charity
directly. If you are in any doubt about a charity collector, ask for their identification and the charity’s name and registration number. If you are not happy about giving then and there, you can check to see if the charity is on the public register of charities on the Commission’s website www.charitycommission.gov .uk. If you are concerned that you may have been targeted by a fundraising scam, you should report this to the police. You should also contact the Charity Commission on 0845 300 0218 or via the aforementioned website. Think about how you are going to give. If you are a UK taxpayer and donate directly to a charity whether online, over the phone, by post or by handing in a cheque at the charity's office or shop - it can claim Gift Aid to maximise your donation.
RULES: Volunteers often start collecting more during the month of Ramadan and West Yorkshire Police want to ensure guidelines are followed by all street collectors

Community boost from Commissioner £2.3m plans for crime fund Leeds heating Charities and voluntary organisations across West Yorkshire have received a share of nearly £194,000 in the second round of grants under the Safer Communities Fund. Money seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act is fed into this single community pot exclusively for local initiatives. At an event at South Leeds Academy in Holbeck, 43 successful groups were awarded the thousands of pounds in cash. During the second round of the Fund, 188 applications totalling £895,000 were received by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire. West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Mark Burns-Williamson said: “I am delighted to be able to provide these groups with the money that will allow them to provide an invaluable service to our local communities as funding cuts continue to impact on charities and voluntary groups. “This is the second round of my Safer Communities Fund awards and a total of £412,000 has now gone to good causes across West Yorkshire. The sheer volume of applicants demonstrates just how crucial this fund is and I am pleased to be able to support such good causes to ensure our
communities are safer and feel safer. “I am really looking forward to working closely with the groups who are key partners in making our communities safer and feeling safer. "Each of the groups that were successful in their applications received 80 per cent of the money. Every approved application was also looked at by an Independent Advisory Board made up of community safety representatives and those from the voluntary sector whilst meeting a strict criteria to deliver against my Police and Crime Plan. “Applications were received from a wide variety of groups in all parts of West Yorkshire and this significant level of demand really highlights the need to retain all Proceeds of Crime in the county. "The third grant round for the Safer Communities Fund will open on 4 August with a specific equality and diversity theme, with more details on our website, so I would encourage local organisations and groups to submit applications of up to £7,500 to make sure their communities will be safer and feel safer as a result of these monies." In the first grant round of the Safer Communities Fund, a total of £218,000 was offered. This was
made up from £167,000 in criminals assets, with the remainder provided from the revenue budget of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner.
In this second grant round of the Safer Communities Fund, we were able to offer a total of just under £194,000 with £174,000 in criminals assets, with the remainder provided from the revenue budget.
Tenants in over 200 Leeds homes can look forward to warmer winters as Leeds City Council brings forward £2.3m plans for bio-mass heating. The provision of affordable energy efficient heating to 230 properties in the Clyde’s multi-storey blocks and Phil May Court sheltered complex will see existing electric storage heating and hot water being replaced with a state-of-the-art biomass heating system using recycled wood pellets. These will provide green energy and give tenants controllable heating and hot water facilities and allow them to monitor and manage their own energy consumption. Details of this scheme are currently in the final planning stages with contractors due to be appointed before October. Councillor Mark Dobson, Leeds City Council executive board member with responsibility for cleaner, stronger and safer communities, said: “Energy bills are an increasing drain on people’s pockets and no one likes thinking they can’t afford to keep their house at a decent temperature, choosing between heating and eating. “That’s why Leeds City Council is investing in better heating and more energy efficiency for our housing.” As part of the wider Leeds City Region Green Deal Contract, £1.5m is also due to be invested in energy efficiency improvements such as external insulation, with this work due to commence in September.

Making it clean for palestine By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A group of fundraising car washers got their buckets and sponges out last week as they raised thousands of pounds for Gaza. Throughout the scorching temperatures on Sunday, more than 20 volunteers from One Ummah Leeds took to the street and raised £6,500, taking their total to more than £20,000. Washing more than 500 cars, in exchange for donations going
towards Gaza, the group spent nine hours cleaning up people’s motors in Leeds. Volunteers came down throughout the day to join in the activities, whilst local businesses provided extra through support sponsorship. Naheem Yacub, part of the organising committee, said he was delighted to see so many people turn out on the day and the generosity of the public. “We had such a busy day and it never really stopped from 10am through until 7pm,” he said. “People were coming down to get their cars washed and some even parked up after it had been cleaned and grabbed a sponge so they could join in. The group have been selling tshirts and hoodies in build up to
the event which show support for Palestine in the ongoing conflict with Israel. merchandise was Further provided in the weekend and Naheem added that the popularity of all this once again shows a united city. “We were handing out air fresheners to every third or fourth car and by 4pm we had run out,” he said. “We just want to say a big thank you to all the volunteers and businesses who supported the event, and most importantly to the people who came down to get their cars washed.” A second car wash is set to be held this Sunday (27th July) outside the Pakistani Centre, opposite Bilal Masjid, in Leeds, where the team hope to take their total fundraising effort to £30,000 before Eid.

Calderdale Councillor OUSTED
A vote of ‘no confidence’ has been made in Calderdale where the head of the borough has been removed from his seat by his colleagues. Cllr Tim Swift was ousted from his position after allegations of failing to honour his promises made in build up to his election. In a statement from the parties, it said: “It has become clear that the Labour Group has no intention of honouring the assurances it gave in May 2014 that it would consult and work with the other parties represented on Calderdale Council. “This has come to a head over the past week, when there have been two instances (Hipperholme crossroads and the imposition of parking charges) where the Labour

Cabinet have made clear their intention to push ahead with their own agenda. “They are ignoring the views of the public of Calderdale and
the wishes of the Council that were clearly set out at its budget-setting meeting in February. “All the current opposition groups on the council believe that the attitude and actions of the Labour Cabinet are totally unacceptable, and that the public of Calderdale deserve better. “We therefore have no option but to call for a vote of no confidence in the current administration. After serious consideration, we have resolved to work collectively over the next nine months to ensure that the Council better serves the local community. “To achieve these aims, the only option open to the Council is to remove the current Leader of the Council and replace him with someone who will honour these commitments.”
KILLED: Mikaeel Kular was killed by his mother, Rosdeep Adekoya, after four days of beatings in the family home in Drylaw before his body was dumped in woodland, 20 miles from the family home
‘I’m GUILTY’ Mother’s guilty plea over son’s death
The mother of three-year-old Mikaeel Kular has admitted killing her son at her trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. Rosdeep Adekoya, 34, pleaded guilty to a charge of culpable homicide, a reduced charge from murder, when she appeared in court on Friday 25th July. Little Mikaeel was beaten over a prolonged period and killed by Adekoya before his body was wrapped in a duvet, stuffed in a suitcase and dumped in woodland 20 miles from the family home in Drylaw, Scotland. The toddler’s fatal beating came after the family visited Nando’s restaurant and Mikaeel was sick. He was beaten over a period of four days, between 12th and 15th January, with Adekoya pleading guilty to punching her son and causing his body to hit against a hard object or inflicting blunt injuries on his head and body The court heard how Adekoya had beaten her son regularly and her internet search history included hits such as ‘I find it hard to love my son’, ‘I love all of my children except
one’, ‘Why am I so aggressive with my son’ and ‘Get rid of bruises’. The mother-of-five also admitted attempting to defeat the ends of justice by contacting emergency services and claiming her son had walked out of the house overnight. His disappearance earlier this year led to a huge search by thousands of members of the public, who had initially been told that he had gone missing. It was two days later that the body was found in the woodland in Fife leading to nationwide grieving. Advocate depute Alex Prentice told the court: “The basis for the plea tendered being accepted is that the Crown accepts that the accused had no intention to kill Mikaeel and that the assault perpetrated upon him, although severe, fell short of the wicked recklessness required for murder.” Culpabale homicide, like murder, is a form of unlawful killing. Yet the glaring difference is that if a person kills intentionally it is murder, whilst if a person kills negligently, it is culpable homicide.

Give a little whistle I
n a previous article we looked at the whistle-blowing case of Clyde & Co LLP and Morris -v- Van Winkelhof, which was due before the Supreme Court. Van Winkelhof, a former member of international law firm Clyde & Co, was dismissed following her allegation that the Managing Partner of Ako Law (a firm associated with Clyde & Co) was accepting bribes and was engaged in money laundering activities. She alleged her dismissal was unfair on two grounds: 1. She was being subjected to detrimental treatment as a result of making a protected disclosure. In other words she had ‘blown the whistle’ on unacceptable conduct and was dismissed as a result; and 2. She was subject to unlawful sex discrimination as a male partner would not have been treated the same way and/or that her dismissal related to the fact that she had recently told Clyde & Co that she was pregnant. The claim was hotly contested by Clyde & Co, who alleged that Mrs Van Winkelhof was not a ‘worker’ within the meaning of the Employment Rights Act 1996 and could not therefore rely on the ‘whistle blowing’ legislation, which is designed to afford protection to workers. At the first Hearing the Employment Tribunal held that the Claimant was not a worker and was not therefore able to pursue her claim for whistle blowing. However, the Employment Appeal Tribunal reversed that decision on the basis that the Claimant held a subordinate position in the firm. The Court of Appeal disagreed and ruled that
the Claimant was not a worker. The question before the Supreme Court was whether or not a member of a limited liability partnership (‘LLP’) can be a “worker” within the meaning of the Employment Rights Act 1996, and can therefore rely on its provisions in a claim for unfair dismissal. The Supreme Court has now reached its much anticipated decision, ruling that members of LLPs are “workers” for the purposes of the Employment Rights Act 1996. This landmark decision means that for the purpose of employment legislation, LLP members have similar protections as employees, and may claim the benefit of the protection given to “whistle-blowers”. Potentially there are also other rights involved if a member is defined as a “worker”, including entitlement to rest breaks and paid annual leave. The case will now be remitted to the Employment Tribunal for the unfair dismissal case to be heard in September 2014. The decision has been criticised as opening the floodgates for an influx of disgruntled LLP members’ claims. The decision highlights an important message; those members of LLPs who decide to blow the whistle must not be victimised, which may demonstrate a potential cultural shift within LLPs. It is likely that LLP members' new “worker” status may be used as a bargaining tool in the negotiation of settlement or exit packages in future. Firms with LLP status are urged to review members’ working conditions and policies to ensure compliance. We at Blacks can provide assistance on all types of employment disputes.

The Prime Minister David Cameron has announced an additional £3m in UK aid to be made available to help the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Britain has already sent £7m as emergency assistance for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency’s (UNRWA) Gaza Flash Appeal to help provide food, shelter and assistance for people in the area. Mr Cameron said that what was happening in Gaza was "completely tragic and ghastly" and called for an "unconditional, immediate, humanitarian ceasefire". Some 1,200 Palestinians and 55 Israelis have been killed in the conflict. The extra £3m will fund an emergency food programme for Gaza's 1.8 million people, International Development Secretary Justine Greening said. The money is expected to provide emergency food for more than 300,000 people for a month. Ms Greening said the UN had reported food shortages and the government was pushing for better humanitarian access so aid agencies could get staff and supplies into Gaza. The current conflict is now the longest between Israel and Palestinian groups in Gaza. Speaking at a question and answer session in the UK, Mr Cameron called on both Israel and Hamas, the dominant group in Gaza, to end the fighting - but
blamed Hamas for breaking earlier ceasefires. He said the loss of life in the conflict had been "appalling" and it had been "heart-rending watching these scenes on our television". "But while calling for an unconditional, immediate ceasefire, we do have to be clear about a couple of points," Mr Cameron added.

Know the facts PROMOTING: Hepatitis C oral swab test pioneer Dean Linzey, played a vital role in creating the online resource
A new innovative online platform was officially launched earlier this week which aims to inform the South Asian community about Hepatitis C. This week marks the launch of ‘Hepatitis C: Find the Facts’, an online platform developed to inform an estimated 1.8 million South Asians and Somalis throughout the UK about the risks of this serious, yet curable disease, by providing simple, engaging and digestible information. The ‘Hepatitis C: Find the Facts’ site, endorsed by the European Liver Patient Association, British Liver Trust and Love Your Liver, aims to confront cultural challenges, misconceptions and the stigma attached to hepatitis C in these communities. Tailored resources will be readily available online, which
are now available for the first time in Hindu, Urdu, Nepali and Somali. The online resources have been developed in partnership with hepatitis C oral swab test pioneer, Nurse Consultant, Dean Linzey, from the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust in Reading and Safina Shahin, BloodBorne Virus (BBV) Asian Head Champion and Administrator of local initiative to increase testing of hepatitis C for South Asians and Somalis in Reading. Nurse Consultant, Dean Linzey commented: “The resources available on the ‘Hepatitis C: Find the Facts’ website is the first step in improving the management of hepatitis and preventing hepatitis C-related liver disease or liver cancer in this hard-to-reach patient population.”

Deadly disease could arrive in UK The Ebola outbreak in west Africa poses a ‘very serious threat’ to Britain, foreign secretary Philip Hammond said on Wednesday, as England's public health authority warned the virus was out of control. Hammond was to chair a meeting of COBRA, the government's crisis response committee, to assess Britain's preparations to cope with any possible outbreak of the disease. One person in Britain has been tested for Ebola, the Department of Health (DoH) ministry confirmed, but the tests proved negative. Reports suggested he had travelled from west Africa to central England. Health professionals have been warned to be vigilant for signs of the deadly virus. "As far as we are aware, there are no British nationals so far affected by this outbreak and certainly no cases in the UK," Hammond told Sky News television. "However, the prime minister does regard it as a very serious threat and I will be chairing a COBRA meeting later today to assess the situation and look at any measures that we need to take either in the UK, or in our diplomatic posts abroad in order to manage the threat. "We are very much focused on it as a new and emerging threat which we need to deal with." Since March, there have been 1,201 cases of Ebola and 672 deaths in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
WARNING: Foreign Secretary, Philip Hammond, has warned that the Ebola outbreak could come to the UK if not monitored properly

The Girl Summit team pose for a photo at DFID's headquarters prior to the event
Stamping out FGM and CFM A new package of action and funding to protect millions of girls at home and abroad from female genital mutilation and forced marriage, was announced this week at the Girl Summit 2014. The event was attended by over 500 delegates from 50 countries, UN agencies, survivors, charities, community groups, faith leaders and front line professionals, to galvanise global efforts to end female genital mutilation (FGM) and child and forced marriage (CFM) within a generation. The Girl Summit, hosted by the Government and UNICEF, is aimed at mobilising domestic and international efforts to end FGM and CFM within a generation. It will bring together domestic and international work to accelerate the work of
campaigners, governments and charities around the world to bring an end to these practices. A new report out today from City University London in collaboration with Equality Now estimates that approximately 60,000 girls aged 0-14 were born in England and Wales to mothers who had undergone FGM. It estimates that approximately 103,000 women aged 15-49 and approximately 24,000 women aged 50 and over, who have migrated to England and Wales, are living with the consequences of FGM. In addition, approximately 10,000 girls aged under 15 who have migrated to England and Wales, are likely to have undergone FGM.
• A £1.4m FGM Prevention Programme, launched in partnership with NHS England to help care for survivors and safeguard those at risk. • New police guidance from the College of Policing and an inspection programme by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) that will look at how the police handle cases of FGM. • A consultation on proposals to introduce new civil orders designed to protect girls identified as being at risk of FGM. • New legislation that will mean parents can be prosecuted if they fail to prevent their daughter being cut. • New legislation to grant victims of FGM lifelong anonymity from the time an allegation is made. • A new specialist FGM service which will include social services, to proactively identify and respond to FGM. This will be supported by an ongoing package of work led by the Chief Social Worker Isabelle Trowler. • New programmes to prevent child and forced marriage in 12 developing countries. • An International Charter – calling for the eradication of these practices within a generation.

Halal burger case concludes An investigation into undeclared pork found in halal lamb burgers supplied to Leicester schools has concluded that no further action should be taken against the manufacturer Paragon Quality Foods Ltd. In April 2013, Leicester City Council withdrew halal lamb burgers supplied to 19 schools after test results showed up to 50 per cent pork DNA in a sample. Follow-up tests on this sample were commissioned by Espo – which provides school dinners to the city council - and also carried out by a public analyst on behalf of Leicester City Council. The results of these tests supported the original findings. The council took samples of nine additional batches of the halal lamb burgers which had been supplied to schools in the city. The public analyst found undeclared goat DNA in all of them but no undeclared pork DNA. Two samples of the halal lamb burgers taken from consignments at a Leicester wholesaler were also tested by the public analyst. Both of these samples were found to contain undeclared pork DNA and undeclared goat DNA. After receiving the results of the council’s testing, Paragon Quality Foods tested samples of frozen raw ingredients still in storage. The company's own testing also found evidence of undeclared goat DNA -
but no pork DNA. It immediately acted to prohibit further use of the agent which had supplied the ingredient and the slaughterhouse from which it originated.

Inquiry into pork DNA in Muslim-school-meal announces its findings Leicester City Council has been investigating the findings with the full cooperation of Paragon Quality Foods Ltd over the last 14 months. This has included site visits, paperwork audits and interviews with key personnel under caution. The council has now concluded its investigation and is satisfied that Paragon Quality Foods Ltd exercised due diligence during the period in question. Therefore, no further action will result. Cllr Sarah Russell, Assistant City Mayor for neighbourhood services, said: “Officers have carried out a very detailed investigation. The company was diligent in its procedures at the time in question and may have been victim of adulteration further up the supply chain. “It is important to remember that the samples taken were produced
this, introducing new procedures in its selection and traceability of suppliers, and in-house testing of the material supplied to it, early in 2013. “But it is still clear that more needs to be done nationally to ensure that the food is governed in a way that prioritises and reestablishes consumer confidence.” Metin Pekin, managing director of Paragon Quality Foods, said: “Paragon Quality Foods is a porkfree site and has always operated the strictest of controls regarding the sourcing and production of its products. “We are pleased that Leicester City Council has concluded that our company had exercised due diligence. “We understand the need for the council to act on its test results, particularly in light of what became apparent as the international

Arab Organisation for Human Rights in the UK (AOHR UK) criticised the EU for failing once again to take a legal and moral stand vis-à-vis the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip which have so far killed more than 693 Palestinians, including 164 children. The Israeli offensive has also injured more than 4300 civilians and destroyed hundreds of homes and public facilities. They added that the EU Foreign Affairs Council issued a statement on Tuesday the 22nd of July 2014 expressing its deep concern for the escalation in violence in Gaza Strip and called for an immediate ceasefire. The statement used very strong and clear language to condemn the rockets fired from Gaza and the use of civilians as human shields. It called for ‘disarming all terrorist groups in Gaza’. When it to came to Israel, the statement carefully selected its words and condemned the killing of civilians without condemning the killer. It also recognised what it described as Israel’s right to defend itself and called upon Israel to ensure its operations be ‘proportionate and in line with international humanitarian law’. The organisation pointed out that the statement was issued on day 16 of the Israeli attack on Gaza which witnessed another bloody day of random strikes on various parts of

EU parliamentarians must rescue the EU from pro-Israel corrupt officials the Strip. More than 75 people were killed on that day, many of them women and children. Monday was also a bloody day during which 103 people were killed in addition to the hundreds who were wounded. AOHR UK stressed that the tone and language of the statement revealed the unwavering support of the EU for the Israeli strikes on Gaza and their adoption of the Israeli narrative for justifying the aggression, which has killed hundreds of civilians. The EU statement not only put the victim on par with the killer but actually described the Palestinians
in terms that transformed them into aggressors in yet another legal and moral low for the EU. Speaking of Israel’s right to defend itself is a claim that cannot be justified on any human level nor be defended except in the annals of a barbarous institution such as the EU which is governed by the law of the jungle. It’s been pointed out that the EU’s position vis-à-vis the Israeli aggression does not reflect the views of the peoples of the EU. Many Europeans have organised protests and called upon their governments to take a firm stand against the
Israeli massacres which shocked the world with images of children and women torn apart and buildings destroyed in one of the most crowded zones in the world. Gaza has been under siege by both the Israeli and Egyptian regimes for the past seven years. The EU has been supportive of the Israeli strikes since the beginning which led to the death of hundreds of Palestinians who could have been saved had Israel not enjoyed this kind of support, especially since Israel enjoys very close relations with the EU and privileges on par with a member
state. The advanced weapons used to kill Palestinians were developed in collaboration with EU companies making the EU and its member states complicit in the death of Palestinians especially in light of their refusal to take any tangible steps to stop the flow of weapons and military technology to Israel. The Organisation concluded that the statements issued by EU so far reflect quite clearly that the leaders of EU countries were not concerned or affected by the images of brutal death. Vilifying Palestinian victims and insisting on depicting Israel as a peaceful, innocent party in the conflict only serves to embolden Israel to commit more crimes, a position that threatens international peace and security. Civil society institutions in the EU have been called upon to expose the EU’s scandalous stand vis-à-vis the suffering of Palestinians since the EU has been drawing upon taxpayers money to support a terrorist state that has breached all human rights laws. AOHR UK also urged parliamentarians who have condemned the Israeli aggression on legal and humanitarian basis to exert more efforts to save EU institutions from the hands of corrupt officials who are leading the EU down the path of ruin.

New sanctions brought in this past week will see businesses, found to be employing illegal workers, handed tougher penalties in the form of higher fines. Previously, a business owner would be fined a maximum of £10,000 for providing work for such an employee yet that has now doubled in an attempt to stamp out the crime. New measures have also been
introduced to ensure businesses don’t unintentionally hire an illegal worker. An interactive online tool, available at www.gov.uk/legalright-work-uk, has been launched to help employers establish if an applicant has the right to work in the UK simply by answering a few ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions. Immigration and Security Minister James Brokenshire said it
was crucial to increase the punishment for employers who break the law as it also has an effect on the wider community. He said: “Illegal working is a key driver of illegal immigration. It is not a victimless crime. It defrauds the taxpayer, undercuts honest employers and cheats job seekers out of employment opportunities. “Doubling the maximum
National penalty for those who hire illegal workers sends out a strong message to those who break the rules. “At the same time as getting tougher on rogue employers, we want to support legitimate ones by making it easier for them to check the immigration status of potential employees by using our new online tool.” If an employer is convicted of
‘knowingly employing’ an illegal worker, they may be sentenced for up to two years’ imprisonment and/or receive an unlimited fine, with business details having the possibility of being published by the Home Office. GAZA CONFLICT By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Dozens more Palestinians have been killed this week, bringing the death toll, of mostly civilians, to around 1,400, as the spiral of violence shows no sign of abating. Now, Israel has announced that it will bolster its military with an additional 16,000 reserve soldiers, bringing the total to 86,000. This week saw a dark day for the Israeli Army after it shelled a school-turnedshelter run by the UN, in which 3,300 Palestinians including women and children were taking refuge. This came hours after Israel shelled a children’s floor at a hospital, killing dozens. United Nations officials have said they warned the Israeli military a staggering 17 times that Jabalya Girls Elementary School in Gaza's biggest refugee camp was a shelter for Palestinian civilians fleeing fighting. But it was not enough to save them from deadly shelling. Blood and body parts were found splattered across the floors and mattresses inside the classrooms where people had sought shelter. Survivors gathered pieces of flesh for burial. At least 15 men, women and children were killed and more than 100 wounded when Israeli artillery fire struck the school. Khalil al-Halabi, director of UNRWA's northern Gaza operations, said Palestinians were taking refuge in the school when it came under fire. "There were five shells - Israeli tank shells - which struck the people and killed many of them as they slept. Those people came to the school because it is a

designated U.N. shelter," he said. UNRWA chief Pierre Krahenbuhl has called upon the international community to take deliberate international political action to put an immediate end to the continuing carnage, which has also seen fatalities of UN’s huamitarian response services. UN Relief and Works Agency spokesman Chris Gunness said in a tweet that a number of staff members had reportedly been killed. The UN is currently caring for 182,604 Palestinians in its 82 shelters in Gaza, he said. Diplomatic efforts by the international community and calls for an end to the bloodshed have fallen on deaf ears, despite the mounting toll in human life and destruction in Gaza. The total number of people displaced from their homes amounts to 25 per cent of all of the narrow coastal enclave’s 1.8 million inhabitants. Tensions have risen sharply after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Monday 28th July that ‘Gaza had to be demilitarised in order to protect Israel’ and that ‘We will not finish the operation without neutralising the tunnels, which have the sole purpose of destroying our citizens, killing our children’. The death toll of Israeli’s is 56 including three civilians since it began its Operation Protective Edge on 8th July. In a speech Tuesday marking the Eid festival, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel was acting like a ‘rabid dog’ and ‘a wild wolf’ and causing a human catastrophe in Gaza, where people should be helped to defend itself.

Teams of 42 rescue workers each worked through the night at Malin village but incessant rain, mud and poor communications in the remote area slowed their efforts to make their way into engulfed thatch huts and brick houses. The hillside above the village collapsed on Wednesday 29th July and heavy rain raised fears of another landslide, small streams continue to flow into the area from surrounding hills. The head of rescue operations at the National Disaster Response Force said 21 bodies had been recovered, with 129 people feared trapped under the mud that covered dozens of houses. "We have mapped the 46 houses and are trying to remove the mud from the most densely populated areas," said operations chief Alok Avasthy. The local school, one of the only roofed buildings to survive, was put into service as a makeshift shelter for rescue workers, while police were stationed in trucks to provide backup. Unprecedented rain in June last year wreaked havoc across Uttarakhand state in the Himalayas, causing rivers and lakes to burst their banks, inundating towns and villages and killing thousands. Environmentalists say construction of hydro-electric dams, involving blasting tunnels through mountains to carry diverted flows of water, deforestation and the spread of unregulated buildings along river banks magnify the impact of heavy rains.

FEAR: Pakistan acid attacks on women
Burqa-clad women walk in a market in Quetta, Pakistan
A recent spate of acid attacks in Balochistan, Pakistan has sparked an impassioned debate about rising Islamisation that is forcing an increasing number of women to stay at home. The horrific crime, which disfigures and often blinds its overwhelmingly female victims, has long been used to settle personal or family scores with hundreds of cases reported every year. But two fresh attacks on consecutive days suggests a new pattern is emerging. Last week, two men on a motorcycle sprayed acid using syringes on two teenage girls who
were returning from a market in Mastung town, 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the provincial capital Quetta. The day before, four women aged between 18 and 50 had suffered the same fate in Quetta, in the market area of Sariab. They were partially burned. "In accordance with our Baluch traditions, they were wrapped in big shawls as well as covering their faces. That... saved (them) from severe injuries," said Naz Bibi, mother of two of the victims. Asked about the attackers, she said: "I can only request that they should not treat women in such a
cruel way." In most acid attack cases around Pakistan, the majority of victims know their attackers. When caught, relatives found guilty speak of punishing their victims for having sullied their "honour" or that of their family with "indecent" behaviour. However, in these latest cases the victims had no known connection to their assailants, which has led campaigners to suggest the attacks are part of rising religious extremism in the province. "The aim of these inhuman acts is to prevent women from
participating in education, as well as social, political and economic aspects of life by creating a climate of terror," said Jahanzaib Jamaldini, vice president of the Baloch National Party, which is fighting for greater autonomy. This week, three more women suffered injuries to their legs and feet in yet another attack, though police and senior officials have so far said the latest incident was a case of a "family feud". In the Sariab district of Quetta, the scene of one of last week's attacks, Islamist groups like the Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal-Jammat (ASWJ), are increasingly coming
to the fore. Dressed in Arab garb, they are able to roam the area armed with automatic weapons without fear of molestation -- leading many to believe they are given tacit state backing. The first recorded acid attack in Baluchistan came in 2010, with two more reported in 2012. Groups state that Balochistan has been steadily radicalised over the years, and a plethora of shadowy, extremist religious groups increasingly exercise their influence over society, diligently seeking to restrict women's agency, and deprive them of their rights.

A new route China plans railway to South Asian borders
As the world’s population continues to connect with others across the globe, China has announced plans to create new railways to the borders of India, Bhutan and Nepal. Plans were reported on Thursday which would see the current line, running to Tibet, extended to the three aforementioned nations, once an extension to a key site in Tibetan Buddhism opens. The construction is expected to be complete by 2020 and will be a key factor in the Chinese government’s plans to boost development. The China-to-Tibet line was officially opened in 2006, and passes through icy peaks on the Tibetan highlands, reaching top heights of 5,000m above sea level. The Global Times have also reported further plans in regard to current developments which are likely to open next month. Currently, the line runs up to the Tibetan capital
of Lhasa but an extension through to Shigatse, the traditional seat of the Tibetan Buddhism’s secondhighest figure, is set to be completed. That link is also reportedly scheduled for its own extension during the 2016-2020 period, to two separate points, one on the border of Nepal and the other on the border with India and Bhutan. Critics of the railway have argued that the line is likely to bring in migrants who threaten to disrupt the Tibetan’s cultural identity. The Chinese announcement coincides with a drive by India, under its new Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to consolidate its influence with its smaller neighbours. Modi's foreign minister, Sushma Swaraj, headed to Nepal this Friday with a proposed pact to help develop the Himalayan country's hydro-electric power potential high on the agenda.
Afghanistan elections finally make ground
Recount to begin After one of the most disruptive election processes possible, the race for the Afghan Presidential seat took a small step forward this week as it was announced that votes were to start being recounted. An audit of millions of votes will once again be sorted to determine the future president of the country, after an initial count had been marred by allegations of massive fraud. The ballots which are found guilty of such action will be disqualified meaning the process will take weeks to complete. Afghanistan has already been forced to wait to hear who will be only the second leader of the nation since the 2001-US led invasion that ousted the Taliban, with Hamid Karzai stepping down. Preliminary results from the
14th June runoff vote showed former Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai well ahead of his rival, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, but both sides alleged fraud. After an audit of eightmillion votes previousy, both parties made calls of corruption despite Ahmadzai’s substantial lead. The head of the Afghan Independent Election Commission and the chief U.N. envoy to Afghanistan said the sides have now agreed on new criteria, allowing the audit to go forward. “On Saturday, we will restart the auditing and we kindly request the candidates, their team representatives and all other stakeholders involved in the auditing to fully cooperate with the

Q: How did you feel when you were offered the role? A: To be honest, I was in shock and disbelief! That was one of my dreams – to act opposite Salman Khan and seeing my dream come true, it was absolutely amazing. Q: What was it like to work with Salman Khan? A: I have never seen or known Salman before this. The first day of shooting was the most nervewracking day of my life. To be honest, I think everyone was excited but a little bit scared too. We were shooting in Karjat when Salman walked in. It felt like the whole energy on the set had changed. I turned around and saw Salman walking with his whole crew around. He just looked extremely comfortable and confident. I still had this perception of a super star (that it may be very difficult to work with him) so I did not know what to except. I was afraid that I might do something wrong, but after seven months of filming I can confirm that Salman is very calm and extremely helpful. This was something I did not expect from him. Q: ‘Kick’ is the first movie directed by Sajid Nadiadwala. Do you think he has done a good job? A: Absolutely! I think he has done the most amazing job with bringing this team together and making sure that the actors feel extremely comfortable, and that the team as a whole works together really well. In my opinion he is captaining the ship really well. Q: Tell us a bit more about your role in ‘Kick’? A: I am playing a psychiatrist called Shaina, who is about to marry Indian police officer Himanshu. Neither one of us are looking forward to the arranged marriage, but when we meet on a train we quickly form a firm friendship. We start talking but what we don’t realise is that both of us are talking about the same person who has affected our lives profoundly. Q: You have done six films in Bollywood so far and you have never dubbed your lines. For the first time you have dubbed for ‘Kick’. How was the experience? A: Actually, it was very difficult. It was Salman who suggested it to me and I have to say after I was done with it, I felt so great! I was on so much pressure because Salman compared me to Zeenat Aman – even though it was one of the biggest compliments I have ever received I asked him not to say it again. Q: What was the greatest challenge for your role? A: I think it has to be the fact that it was such a big movie! You don’t want to disappoint anyone; you don’t want to disappoint your director, your co-stars. You just want to give everything to the movie and want to do your best, to make sure your scenes are great. Also, I really wanted to make sure that I got my character right, I listened to Sajid Nadiadwala, went with his brief, did exactly what he asked for.

played with a lot of vibrant colours giving her a very bohemian and chic look.” When quizzed, Tanya Ghavri, stylist for Kareena in the film, said: “This is my first film with Kareena. She is a star and has probably tried all kinds of costumes since she has been in the film industry! “So for this film particularly, and keeping the story in mind, I have played with the colours. There are almost 20-25 designer outfits that Kareena will be seen wearing and are all a class apart from each other. It’s surely going to be a treat for her fans.” Directed by Rohit Shetty ‘Singham Returns’ starring Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor is produced by Reliance Entertainment and releases worldwide on 15th August 2014.

BMW unleashes its first three-cylinder petrol engine
Future supercar BMW have just launched its i8 - a plug-in hybrid performance vehicle that uses a three cylinder turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine in a package that takes BMW’s EfficientDynamics philosophy to a new high. Bringing together hallmark BMW dynamics, lightweight design and efficiency, BMW states that the 2+2-seater i8 is a new-generation sports car. The length, width and height of the BMW i8, is in keeping with typical sports car proportions, and its compact construction allows the front and rear sections of the car to be particularly low-slung and thus accentuating the car’s dynamically
stretched flanks. The dihedral doors open forwards and upwards, adding intrigue to the design. The BMW i8 embodies a revolutionary, future-focused interpretation of the driving pleasure, for which BMW is renowned. It was purpose-designed as a plug-in-hybrid sports car offering agile performance, near 50:50 weight distribution and outstanding efficiency. Its also the first BMW production model to be powered by a three-cylinder petrol engine. BMW TwinPower Turbo valves, along with Valvetronic. This highly turbocharged unit is technology with high-precision The low roll torque is further equipped with latest-generation injectors positioned between the reduced by a balancer shaft, while a multi-stage damper integrated in the automatic transmission ensures very smooth and refined running at low RPM. This three-cylinder combustion engine in the BMW i8 develops 231hp and drives the rear wheels, while a maximum torque of 320Nm is available from 3,700rpm. The car’s second power source is a 96 kW/131hp hybrid synchronous electric motor which sends its power to the front axle. The motor develops 250Nm torque from a standstill. As well as providing a power boost to assist the petrol engine during acceleration, the electric motor can also power the vehicle by itself with a range in everyday driving of up to 22 miles and a top speed of 75mph on electric power alone, drawing its energy from a lithium-ion battery. Developed by BMW Group, the
high-voltage battery has a liquid cooling system, offers a maximum usable capacity of five kilowatt hours and can be recharged from a conventional household power socket, at a BMW i Wallbox or at a public charging station. The battery can also be recharged via the electric motor on the overrun. The rear wheels of the BMW i8 are driven by the petrol engine via a six-speed automatic transmission, while the front wheels receive their power from the electric motor via a two-stage automatic transmission. Combined maximum output of 362hp and combined peak torque of 570Nm provide all-wheel-drive performance which is as dynamic as it is efficient. Utilising both power sources enables the sprint from zero to 62mph takes just 4.4 seconds, going on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. All the while combined fuel consumption stands at 135mpg and CO2 emissions come in at 49g/km.

The Lexus NX – a luxury crossover
New Yaris bursting with kit
Japanese car maker Toyota is launching its new Yaris supermini this summer, and hopes to broaden the car’s appeal with a revised range. The firm is offering more choice, more equipment options and a wealth of advanced features for on-board comfort, communications, safety and style as it launches the Yaris into an increasingly competitive market sector. Established Active and Icon grades are joined by new Sport and Excel trims. The Hybrid variant can be specified in Icon and Excel versions. Each grade has its own character, differentiated by details such as the interior trim and materials and treatment of various interior and exterior elements, including the lower grille, wheels,
seats, centre console and instrument panel. High equipment levels feature throughout the range, with a leather-trimmed steering wheel, air conditioning and the latest Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system fitted as standard from Icon grade. Climate control is standard for all Hybrid and Excel variants. Cost options include Toyota’s Skyview panoramic roof, LED daytime running lights and rear lamps, rear privacy glass and a multimedia system with navigation. Sport models can further be specified with red interior trim. On-the-road prices start at £10,995 for the 1.0-litre threedoor Active model and rise to £17,695 for the range-topping Hybrid model in Excel trim.
Lexus created the luxury-utility crossover category with the original midsized RX model in 1998 and is now poised to disrupt the growing compact segment with the all-new 2015 NX. Inspired by performance vehicles, the 2015 NX unites the engineering input of racers with the impeccable touch of Lexus luxury in a design that steals the show.
Following in the tire tracks of the new-generation Lexus GS and IS sedans, the 2015 NX brings dramatic design to a segment populated by boxy offerings. The boldest interpretation yet of the signature Lexus spindle grille and L-finesse design envelops a platform engineered by a team that includes active racers. The 2015 Lexus NX debuts in two
versions, the NX 200t with a turbocharged 2.0-liter fourcylinder engine and the NX 300h hybrid, which brings the brand's number of hybrid offerings to six, the most among luxury brands. The hybrid offers a real driving kick, thanks to a new transmission with a kickdown function. The racers on the team insisted on splitting the hybrid battery into two separate pods for better weight distribution; with the benefit of more efficient use of cabin space. Both NX models offer their own version of proactive all-weather drive (AWD). Looking more sports-car than sport-utility, the 2015 NX's cabin is bristling with new, onboard, standard and available technology, including a Lexus-first Wireless Charging Tray for compatible phones and devices; the new Lexus Remote Touch Interface (RTI) with a touch pad; and a comprehensive Multiinformation Display that features a Lexus-first G-Force meter and boost gauge.

Car insurance market condemned by MPs Car insurance is a "highly dysfunctional market" in which firms' pursuit of profit has led to higher prices for consumers, a report by MPs has said. In some cases, business practices have not been in the consumer interest and have "inadvertently encouraged criminal activity", the report from the House of Commons Transport Committee said. There was no clearer example of this than "insurance firms' willingness to pay compensation for whiplash claims which they suspect are fraudulent without requiring the claimant to undergo a medical examination". The committee said steps were being taken to prohibit insurers from offering to settle whiplash claims before the claimant had undergone a medical examination. "We agree and would like to
see this practice banned altogether," the committee said. The MPs also said they agreed in principle with the Government's requiring of courts to strike out "dishonest" insurance claims where, for example, there had been gross exaggeration. But the committee cautioned against hasty legislation "because there may be complex legal implications". The committee also agreed with Government plans to prohibit solicitors from offering inducements, such as cash or tablet computers, to people considering making claims. The report said progress in enabling insurers and claimant solicitors to share data about potentially fraudulent claims had been slow. The MPs said that when data sharing began it should be
compulsory, otherwise only the most reputable firms would be involved. The report went on: "We also note evidence that new forms of potentially dishonest practice - such as ordering additional medical reports on psychological harm arising from road traffic accidents -are emerging. "The Government should press the Solicitors Regulation Authority to stop some solicitors from playing the system to maximise their income from unnecessary medical reports." Launching the report, the committee's chairman Louise Ellman, Labour MP for Liverpool Riverside, said: "This is our fourth report on the cost of motor insurance and while premiums are now falling, aspects of the market remain dysfunctional and have
encouraged criminality to take root. "Further action is still required to tackle fraud whilst protecting genuine claimants." Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: "Despite the reforms already introduced, insurers are still footing the bill for the increasing number and cost of personal injury claims, particularly whiplash, even though the number of crashes and injuries on Britain's roads continues to fall. "This suggests that attempts at fraud are still rising, while insurers are even starting to see claims for psychological injury following even very minor collisions. "Insurers are working hard to identify attempts at fraud and are becoming increasingly successful, as figures released earlier this year underlined, but more can be done."

Pedalling for Palestine Fundraiser jumps on the saddle for charity
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
CYCLING: Abid was not able to drink any liquids during the challenge as he was fasting and had to pour water over himself to keep cool in the heat
A 19-hour fast, sweltering conditions, and even a pair of broken handlebars could not stop a Bradford cyclist from completing his fundraising mission last weekend. Abid Khan, from Clayton Heights, pedalled his way from Bradford to Leeds, and back again, in hope of raising funds for those most in need in Palestine. Within just one week of setting himself the challenge, the 27-year-old had already raised over £1,000 before he took to the roads on Sunday. With the support of his wife, who followed closely behind in a convoy, Abid was able to complete the task despite only riding a bike on the road for the first time earlier in the week. “It was really tough and a big challenge especially without any water,” he said. “Thankfully I had some great support from my wife, friends and family who, as well as sponsoring me, sent me texts and messages of encouragement throughout the ride. “I was really proud to finish it because I knew this money would be going to a good cause.” Setting off from Bradford city centre at 11.30am, Abid cycled
his way to Leeds in around 90 minutes before he had to undertake the unenviable task of cycling back. After a rest period to catch his breath, and also hammer the handlebars back onto his bike, he jumped back on the saddle and began the uphill climb. Arriving in the city just over one and a half hours later, Abid says he was greeted by the ‘common sight’ of fellow fundraisers also undertaking selfless acts to raise money for Palestine. The Bradford resident added that it made him very emotional to think of all the people who had been affected by the conflicts abroad. “At the time of breaking fast I was close to tears,” he said. “I knew that I had struggled throughout the day and was now able to have access to food and drink, but people in Palestine didn’t even have these little luxuries. “That thought kept going through my mind and it really put the whole fundraising challenge into perspective.” He added: “I hope people will read my story and do similar initiatives because we can all do our part to help any charity.” Abid will meet representatives from the Interpal charity this weekend to hand over the donations which so far total almost £2,000.
Referees at the ready
A referee course is set to train up a whole new batch of match officials this weekend with attendees preparing to blow the whistle to kick-off their career in football. Organised by the Sports Campaign Against Racism (SCAR), the Bradford-based event looks at bringing more BME referees into the game at all levels. From grassroots to the professionals, there is a clear lack of officials from ethnic backgrounds. SCAR was set up to help promote an inclusive game for all and this weekend’s course has already received funding from the FA, PFA and Sporting Equals, to try and promote the SCAR ethos. SCAR secretary, Shadow Parvez, explained why it was so important to get people from different backgrounds involved in football, after spending much of his life in the game. “This weekend’s course is going to be a great access point for prospective referees from BME backgrounds to get qualifications in football,” he said. “What is different between us and other referee courses is that we don’t just give them the qualification and leave them, we continue to support them after. “We will go to games they are officiating in and help them all the way.”
Qais Qualifies
Leeds boxer, Qais Ashfaq, is guaranteed a medal at this year’s Commonwealth Games after successfully overcoming Scotland’s Joe Ham. The 21-year-old told the Asian Express prior to the Games that he was determined to win Gold in Glasgow and is well on his way to fulfilling that promise. Ham was unable to match the work rate of his English opponent as Ashfaq was awarded a unanimous point’s decision victory.
The ABA champion looked composed throughout the contest and will now pick up at least a Bronze Medal as he prepares for a semi-final on Friday 1st August. He will face off against Kenya’s Benson Gicharu Njangiru for a chance to advance into the final of the Men’s Bantamweight 56kg Final.
If successful in that bout, he will face another home nation competitor in the final on Saturday with Northern Ireland’s Michael Conlan, and Wales’ Sean McGoldrick competing in the other semi. Good luck to Qais and all our English competitors in Glasgow from all at the Asian Express.

POINTLESS Force India’s fantastic record of picking up points in every race this season came to a sudden halt last weekend as both drivers failed to complete a tricky Hungarian course. Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez were forced to retire after accidents on the track left them heading home after just 22 laps. High-flying Hulkenberg had been just one of two racers this season that had picked up points in every race. Yet his stellar record has now come to an end after he clipped his own teammate on the final corner of the 15th lap to crash out for the first time as a Force India driver. Perez’s car was okay to continue momentarily and did seven more laps before his race was also cut short following a collision into the wall. Speaking after the race, a disappointed pair both said they were now looking on to the next race in Belgium to amend their mistakes. Hulkenberg said: “It was not the best
Constructors left disappointed after latest Grand Prix day in the office and I’m feeling very disappointed. The track was drying out and I was quite close behind Checo when I made contact with him at the final corner. “The previous lap he had taken a much wider line so I tried to overtake on the inside, but he took a tighter line and I couldn’t back out of the move. I made contact with his car, lost my front wing and went straight on into the barrier. “It was my mistake and I’ve apologised
to the team. It’s especially frustrating because there was a lot of potential in this race, but I guess it was one of those days when things didn’t go our way.” Perez added: “Conditions were very difficult, the track was drying and improving, and it made you want to push to the limit, but there were some wet patches that could catch you out. “We'll take the positive elements of this weekend and get back in the points in the next race.”
Ramadan Runner
No food or drink? No problem for local runner An avid fundraiser from Bradford showed that not even a 19-hour fast can deter him from helping a good cause as he completed last weekend’s Leeds 10k Race for All. 33-year-old Nazim Ali, from Manningham, took on the challenge in hopes of raising money for Syrian refugees, through the charity Penny Appeal, as well as for victims of the ongoing unrest in Palestine. Despite the sweltering heat, which was felt across the country on Sunday, Nazim crossed the finish line in just over one hour and helped raise more than £3,500 in the process. Having already completed marathons, half-marathons and 10k events before, the local resident is somewhat used to long distance challenges yet he explained why last weekend’s run was one of the most mentally challenging yet. “I was nervous before the actual run because I knew it was going to be warm and I knew it was going to be in the middle of my fasting,” he said. “I had to prepare well for this race and so I did a couple of practice runs in the evening leading up to the run. “Perhaps most importantly I had to make sure that what I was eating before that day’s fast began, would only help me in the run.” Nazim’s diet in the morning was made up of large portions of fruit,
including grapes, oranges, bananas and watermelon, as well a substantial serving of almonds. This was all washed down with two glasses of milk, and the same quantity of water, which helped prepare him for the task ahead. During the run, the Penny Appeal Ambassador said he passed three people who had passed out due to the heat yet he was determined to complete the whole race. “I did take it easy because it was so warm but eventually came in at hour, two minutes and 20 seconds,” he said. “At the water breaks I poured the liquid over my head and back but within a couple of minutes it had dried up because of the sun. “It was hard but it was also an amazing experience and I want to thank everybody who has sponsored me so far.” The £3,500 so far raised takes Nazim’s own individual fundraising mission up to £15,000 since he began undertaking such challenges in 2002. Some of the biggest monetary donations for the Leeds event were from Bradford-based community organisation, Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA), of which Nazim is general secretary, who raised £650 through a collection, whilst Nazim’s football team, Fairbank United, also pledged £224 after a fundraising Iftar.

Controversy Back page story continued The ICC regulations prohibit players from displaying political, religious or racial statements on their clothing and equipment while taking part in international matches. England had cleared Ali to wear the bands, arguing that he was making a humanitarian statement and not a political one. The ban has been deemed “controversial” as the whole team wore the logo of the Help for Heroes charity on their shirts on Tuesday 29th July to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the first world war. But the ICC issued the following statement: “The ICC equipment and clothing regulations do not permit the display of messages that relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes during an international match. “Moeen Ali was told by the match referee that while he is free to express his views on such causes away from the cricket field, he is not permitted to wear the wristbands on the field of play and warned not to wear the bands again during an international match.” Moeen, who has been involved in helping raise funds in his home city Birmingham for charities working to raise funds for Gaza relief efforts, has had the backing of his team. England and Wales Cricket have said that ‘as far as we are concerned, he has not committed any offence,’ adding it was up to the ICC to decide what action, if any, Ali should face. Nevertheless, other cricketers expressed their support of Ali on social media. “We have always worn wristbands or ribbons when showing support 4an incident or raising awareness,we do it for animal rights too,y not humans,” wrote former Pakistan cricketer Azhar Mahmood on Twitter. “Absolutely love this! Well done Moeen bro! Keep showing your support! #Pray4Gaza” wrote England cricketer Ajmal Shahzad. “Good on brother mo! #prayforGaza” wrote Lancashire and former England bowler Kabir Ali. On Friday, Malaysian cyclist Azizulhasni Awang was warned he risked being thrown out of the Commonwealth Games if he repeated wearing gloves bearing the message ‘Save Gaza’. Awang could have been ejected from the 2014 Glasgow Games after wearing the gloves in competition on Thursday. Instead the 26-year-old was given a reprimand and warned not to wear them again. The Commonwealth Games Federation seeks to avoid its competitions being used for political means. Though Awang insisted his message was ‘humanitarian’ rather than politically-charged, he issued an apology.

ICC bans England batsman Moeen Ali from wearing “Save Gaza” wristband
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
The International Cricket Council (ICC) have banned England batsman Moeen Ali from wearing wristbands featuring the slogans ‘Save Gaza’ and ‘Free Palestine’. Ali, 27, who is Muslim and of Pakistani descent, wore the wristbands on the second day of the third test (Monday 28th July), against India at Southampton. His wristbands were only on public display for just over 40 minutes while he made 12 runs off 28
balls before he was caught off India seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Though Ali was backed by the England and Wales Cricket Board, he was told by match referee David Boon - the former Australia batsman who is the ICC’s match referee, to remove the wristband and not wear them again while playing for England.
