Mummifed child was ‘let down’ by systems Four-year-old Hamzah Khan’s decomposing body found in his cot with a teddy By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
An enquiry into the death of a four-year-old boy who was starved by his mother said that his death "could not have been predicted", but UKs systems "let Hamzah down both before and following his death". Children's minister, Edward Timpson, has identified ten important questions that he thinks the review should have answered. They all relate to the apparent
failure of social workers to follow up a succession of episodes where Hamzah's siblings had appealed for help or had given cause for concern. Hamzah Khan's mother Amanda Hutton, 43, was jailed for 15 years last month after the boy's decomposed body was found in a cot in her bedroom in Bradford, Yorkshire, nearly two years after he died.

Two men have appeared in court charged with the murder of a pizza delivery man in Sheffield on October 27th. Thavisha Lakindu Peiris, 25, was making his final delivery before starting his dream job as an IT consultant. Mr Peris was found stabbed in his car in Southey Crescent in the city after his colleagues became concerned that he’d gone missing. A 17-year-old-boy and Shamraze Khan, 26, of Southey Crescent, remain in custody and are due to stand trial at Sheffield Crown Court in June. The Sri Lankan national had been working at Domino’s pizza in Halifax Road after graduating from Sheffield Hallam University in 2011. His colleagues found him dead, having suffered multiple stab wounds, in the driving seat of his Toyota Yaris in a parking bay near the delivery address. Mr Peiris's family visited the UK after his death but have since returned to Sri Lanka. They have thanked the police, local residents and the media for their support.
In a family statement, Thavisha's parents and brother said: “We would like to thank many people who have stood by us in this difficult time. Our family and friends, thank you for your love and concern. “We would like to thank the police investigators, headed by Detective Superintendent Lisa Ray and her team for their tireless efforts. We would like to thank the British High Commission in Sri Lanka for taking a personal interest in the matter and we thank Domino’s for the support extended to us. “Last but not least, we thank the British media and the British public for their concern. “We hope no other family goes through what we are facing right now. Once again thank you for supporting us but we would ask that we are now afforded privacy at this difficult time.” Thavisha’s brother, Pramod Chetheka Peiris, added: “My brother was a wonderful person with a lot of love for life. “He was not just my brother, he was my friend. Words can not express our suffering and nothing can bring my brother back.”

Designing Competition invites Leeds to design a fun meal for the
children across healthy and school menu
CUTIES: Student of Harehills Primary School eager to get involved in designing lunch for their school
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Children across Leeds are being invited to design their own healthy and fun school lunch as part of a competition run by Catering Leeds for National School Meals week. Leeds City Council’s catering team, Catering Leeds, is asking all schools in the city to get involved in the competition which could see one pupil’s meal be included on the menu. National School meals week is now in its 20th year. The children will complete a fun activity sheet which will help their understanding of a good meal as well as them designing their own idea for a school meal. Margaret Broughton, head teacher of Harehills primary school said:
"Here at Harehills, we believe that school meals are an important part of our learning curriculum. “Through family service our children learn to be a family where older children take care of the younger children on their table daily. Serving food and supporting each other." Councillor Judith Blake, executive member responsible for children’s services said: “The competition is a great way for children and young people to get involved in school meals and gives them the opportunity to have a say over what they would like to see on the menu. “Nutrition plays a vital role in young people’s well-being and how they perform at school. I would encourage more pupils to think about having school meals as they really do make such a difference to the school day.”
Councillor Peter Gruen, executive board member responsible for neighbourhoods, planning and support services said: “The work being done by our catering service to increase the uptake of school meals is fantastic. They encourage schools to look beyond lunchtime and include healthy food and nutrition in the whole school day by promoting growing clubs whose produce is then used in the school kitchen. “School meals week is a great opportunity to further demonstrate the great work the team do to make school meals interesting, healthy and fun.” Catering Leeds is at the forefront of school meals provision, with two members of the team being part of an expert panel, which developed the national ‘School Food Plan’, which was unveiled in July.

Proud of Bradford 3
A major project to try to improve the lives and environment of residents living in an inner-city area of Bradford will begin on Tuesday 19th November. Proud of Bradford 3 is an initiative involving Bradford Council, the police, the fire services and other partners and will concentrate on an area between Leeds Road and Barkerend Road. The main aim of the project is to engage the local population to cooperate and work with various agencies to bring about major improvements to the local environment and quality of life. Police and Council Wardens will be knocking on doors, talking to residents to find out local priorities and recruiting residents to become volunteers. The six-month project will include a range of activities including road sweeping, litter picking, graffiti removal and other environmental improvements by Bradford Council.
Kick-off
West Riding County FA has recognised a state of the art 3G football pitch at Thornton Recreation Centre. The Bradford Council-run site has been chosen to host a friendly match between representative teams from West Riding County Amateur League and Yorkshire Amateur League on Tuesday 26th November. Work was carried out over the summer to improve the facilities at Bradford’s longest serving sports centre. The scientifically advanced 3G pitches were installed to offer the latest technology in synthetic grass, providing less risk of injury than previous surfaces. For more information in regard to booking the surfaces please contact Thornton Recreation Centre direct on 01274 436022 or email Simon.turner@bradford.gov.uk

Professor Nick Frost, who chairs the Bradford Safeguarding Children Board, said: "The SCR (serious case review) is very clear that Hamzah's death could not have been predicted but finds that systems, many of them national systems, let Hamzah down both before and following his death." But Children’s Minister, Edward Timpson, has said the review is a “rubbish document”. Mr Timpson said he has “deep concerns” because it “fails to explain sufficiently clearly the actions taken, or not taken, by children's social care”. He said the answers to the “glaring absences” from the review must be made public to “ensure such mistakes will not be repeated in the future”. A DfE (Department for Education) source said: “It's even more worrying that local agencies don't realise how poor an investigation this is. “There will have to be a proper investigation to answer the serious questions it raises.” Prof Frost said: "It is my responsibility, as independent chair, to ensure that lessons are learnt. “Very sadly, I cannot give assurances that a tragedy like this will never happen again in our country - as we can't control or predict the behaviour of all parents, the vast majority of whom are doing their very best to care for their children. “However, I can assure you that at this stage I am satisfied each agency is responding adequately but this is an ongoing process which requires constant monitoring. “No child should go through what
Hamzah experienced. I am satisfied that systems are in place today that minimise the chance of a situation such as this ever being repeated in Bradford.” Bradford Crown Court heard how alcoholic Hutton was living in “breathtakingly awful” conditions with five of her young children as well as Hamzah's mummified remains when shocked police entered the four-bedroom house in September 2011. A jury found she had allowed Hamzah to starve to death in December 2009 and left his body in a cot with a teddy. The remains were only discovered due to a rookie police community support officer's tenacious pursuit of a minor antisocial behaviour complaint because she knew something was wrong. The family was known to all the main agencies yet Hutton had a history of failing to co-operate with services that could have helped her. Peter Wanless, chief executive of the NSPCC, said: “Tragically Hamzah became invisible, slipping off the radar of our entire society the moment he left hospital after birth. “We have to ask how this could happen in 21st century Britain. His mother made no attempt to register his birth; he missed midwife appointments, health visitor checks, immunisations; and he was never registered for school. “A red flag must be raised when key appointments are missed so that children cannot disappear. “It cannot be right that the first time someone took serious steps to track him down was six years after his birth by which time he was already dead.”

Martin House
Children’s Hospice Hazel Clough, Martin House’s Deputy Director of Care “I have been here for 26 years now, ever since the hospice opened, and I can honestly say it has been a fantastic experience. “I’ve always worked with children and families but I never imagined I would be working in a children’s hospice. But, as soon as I saw this place was being built, I thought that sounds like the job for me. “The service is so flexible and we try to ensure this place becomes a home from home. We’re not a hospital; we aim to allow families to do exactly what they want even if that means going the extra mile. “Over the years we’ve met some amazing people and learned a lot of things about the families and that’s always how we work. We are always learning and trying to make sure that everything is the way our families want it to be. There is not simply one option of care or another; we are flexible
with everybody because everybody wants different things. “It doesn’t matter what religion or race you are, all families are welcomed and that is something that must be stressed. “In regard to a most memorable moment it is really hard to pinpoint just one because I have dealt with thousands of children since I’ve been here. There was this one incident last year which I remember really well. There was this lovely young girl, who uses a wheelchair and a ventilator, who visits the hospice regularly. “We had a party in our garden with things like teacup roundabouts and this little girl had never been able to go in one before. We managed to help her in and she absolutely loved it. “It’s these little moments where you see the child smile, or see the results of going that little bit further which, at the end of the day, is the best thing.

A Bradford Mother, whose two sons suffer from a rare life-limiting condition, has heaped praise on the work done by Martin House Children’s Hospice and labeled the establishment as a ‘lifeline’. Hamida Rafiq has been visiting the hospice for almost eight years. Both of her sons, Ummar Saddique and Adam Saddique, suffer from Aicardi Goutieres Syndrome (AGS), a life limiting disease which only affects approximately 400 people worldwide. Through the care offered by Martin House’s staff, Hamida has been able to receive vital support in raising her children and ensuring the best possible life for all the family. Hamida described Martin House as a ‘crucial’ part of her life and struggled to put into words her gratitude for the ‘unbelievable staff’. “Everybody here is part of our family now. It is such a peaceful, calming place – people think hospices mean ‘the end of life’ and I thought that at first but no, they support you every way you need and are always there for you,” she explained. “They are a backup call, sometimes you feel like you are battling against everybody but this place supports you through changes. It is a place for parents to come as well. We lose a lot of our social life as well, having our kids,
An ‘extended family’ right on your doorstep
people seem to fade so it’s nice to come and see other families who are in a similar boat to you. “As a parent of a child with an ill child, you are constantly bombarded with a lot of information but not here.” She added: “It’s the little things too which matter to us parents. Whenever I come through the door they recognise us straight away. It means a lot; they know exactly who you are and everything. We are spoilt to be honest by these wonderful people.” Providing support for families since 1976, Martin House Children’s Hospice has acted as an important place for thousands of people throughout the past four decades. Established in Boston Spa, the hospice caters for families with children who have life-limiting conditions and aims to be a place where Yorkshire’s children and parents can visit during
their most difficult times. Mother-of-three, Najmah Iqbal, reiterated Hamida’s viewpoint. She has only been visiting Martin House for just over one year, yet could not imagine life now without the support. “It is beautiful here and we are very blessed to be able to come and just take somewhat of a break,” she said. “There is everything here we need and the care team know exactly how to look after Zayna (Fatima Iqbal). “You always feel like you are in a safe pair of hands and that is so reassuring.” The hospice is inclusive to every member of the family and Zayna’s brother and sister often visit the site. The eight-year-old youngster is currently in need of a kidney transplant and is on the NHS organ donor list yet; a severe shortage of Asian organ donors, threatens to leave Zayna requiring a transplant for a prolonged period of

24 hour care. Home visits are also provided for families who can’t, or don’t want to, travel to the Boston Spa establishment, with the same ‘inhouse’ flexible services on offer to all. Poisoned Pregnant wife and three children suffered carbon monoxide poisoning due to leaking boiler at council home
POISONED: All members of the family had ‘high’ levels of carbon monoxide in their blood
A Bradford family say they have been put through ‘hell’ over the past five months with all residents of the home suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning and persistent exposure to harmful gases. The house, on Powell Avenue, Bradford, is currently owned by housing provider, Incommunities and has been subject to a host of complaints since the current occupants moved in on the 7th June. Mr Zahid Shah, 39, and his pregnant partner Mrs Zolaikhan Bibi, 32, moved into the home with their three children and have been struggling to cope with the conditions ever since. A leaking boiler, rusty door handles, potent stenches and exposed paving slabs have all been challenges for the family to overcome with little aid from their landlords. After spending more than £1,800 of the families own money to renovate the house with paint and plastering, Mr Shah had hoped that this new home would be the perfect place to raise his growing family. However, problems soon began to arise with Mrs Bibi first smelling gas in the home days after moving in. “I was upstairs at the time and could tell immediately something was wrong,” she explained. “I could smell gas coming from downstairs so we called the gas board and they confirmed there was a leak from the boiler. “There was an old woman who used to live here, her daughter lives across the road and she told us that there were a number of gas leaks whilst her grandmother was here. Her grandma used to always complain about streamy eyes as well, things we have been going over the past four or five months.” The family’s boiler was reviewed a further five times and condemned thrice before it was removed and replaced with a brand new one by the Incommunities landlord. After suffering from headaches and sleepiness, Mrs Bibi, and her family, was told to have their blood checked after the maternity nurses became concerned about the health of the eight-month pregnant mother. “Initially we were told by our doctor that everything was normal but when we had the tests done by the maternity department, the results showed that every one of us had more than double the normal carbon monoxide levels in our blood,” Mr Shah explained. “It was shocking, I have seen what these kind of numbers mean for healthy people but for a pregnant mother, I don’t even want to contemplate the effects it could have on our child.”
SUPPORT: Cllr Naveeda Ikram
Three-year-old Zulqurnaian Mehdi Sherazi had the highest levels of carbon monoxide in his blood at 2.9, (recommended 1.1) whilst his two sisters, seven-year-old Zohrah Batool Sherazi, (2.6) and Rizah-e-Zainab Sherazi (2.8) were also well above the average levels. Mr Shah now insists that the main issue surrounds a ‘potent stench’ which is coming from underneath the floorboards. Despite attempts to correct the issue, the tenant states that the smell still returns and is a ‘major hindrance for the family’. Bradford Councillor, Naveeda Ikram, has supported the family since hearing about the conditions and demanded action to be taken to help the family. She said: “What we are demanding first of all, is that this family needs rehousing as a matter of urgency to a property where they are completely safe. It is something which should have been done one or two months ago when these problems first began. “I wrote to Ms Geraldine Howley, one of the chief executives of Incommunities, on the 11th October and received an acknowledgement letter soon after yet it did not assure action would be taken. “The big point is we are talking about carbon monoxide poisoning here and a pregnant mother. This family is clearly upset with the system and clearly Incommunities need to act and change their system. They need to pay Mr Shah back the money he has invested and accommodate these people elsewhere straight away.” An Incommunities spokesperson said: “All the appropriate checks have been carried out by independent gas engineers on several occasions and no trace of a Carbon Monoxide leak has been found at the customers’ property. “As a caring and responsible landlord, within the last month, we have fitted a new gas boiler and an electric fire to replace a gas one at the address.”

cinema building and The Tyrls, which housed the former police station, back to the council. The HCA has provided £3.5m funding to the council to prepare both the sites for development. The council had commissioned indepth structural surveys before it considered whether to buy the building for £1, as substantial amounts of money will be required to improve it.
This week the government faced questions in the House of Commons over its handling of allegations of fraud at one of its first flagship free schools. MPs focused on the Kings Science Academy (KSA) in Bradford, the subject of an internal audit highlighting large sums of missing money. This is teamed allegations of mismanagement and possible fraud, which includes fabricated invoices in order to claim thousands of pounds of public money. KSA was one of the first free schools approved by the Department for Education (DfE), and opened in September 2011, as a science-focused secondary school for up to 800 pupils between ages 11 and 16. It moved to a new £10m building in the Lidget Green area last year.
The building has stood empty since 2000. The HCA terminated the development agreement with Langtree Artisan last September. Nas Parker, head of area at the HCA, said: “The transfer of the Odeon alongside £1.3m of HCA investment to Bradford Council will ensure that the council can prepare the site for development in a way that meets local priorities.”

Investigation into financial affairs of Bradford’s Kings Science Academy suggests fraudulent invoices and claims Earlier this year, Ofsted inspectors gave KSA a “requires improvement” grade in teaching and management. Last month the DfE published a redacted report from its own internal audit of the academy. It revealed that a whistleblower at the school had admitted that it had submitted fabricated invoices to the DfE. The report also found that £86,335 of a lead-in grant given by the
department to help set up the free school had not been spent on what it was intended for. The investigation comes hard on the heels of the ongoing controversy at the Al-Madinah free school in Derby, which also involved allegations of financial mismanagement and which announced the resignation of the chair of its board of governors. “We found serious failings in financial management at the Kings
Science Academy. We informed the police who decided no further action was necessary,” said a spokesman for the DfE. The spokesman said a plan was in place to recover the misued funds, and that the school was undertaking its own investigation. “Any necessary disciplinary action is a matter for the school,” he said. However, it has since emerged that the DfE reported the matter to Action Fraud – the UK’s national
fraud reporting centre in April. A Home Office confirmed that an ‘administrative error’ by Action Fraud led to it being classed an information report. Since the mistake came to light West Yorkshire Police has launched its own investigation. The Home Office says the “administrative error” was only discovered at the beginning of this month. Bradford’s Liberal Democrat MP David Ward and Respect MP George Galloway have both questioned why the DfE failed to realise that the matter had not been properly passed onto the police sooner. Between them the two MPs have submitted more than 20 written Parliamentary questions to Education Secretary Michael Gove and Home Secretary Theresa May regarding the Kings Science Academy case.

Taxi drivers face many problems day to day. Whether it being language barriers, dress codes or simply fearing for their lives, it seems it is becoming harder and harder to make an honest living. Many representing, some would say, the front line for the rest of the Asian community. Over the course of the next few weeks, Asian Express looks deep into the plight of Yorkshire’s taxi community starting with their fight against abuse and fear for their lives. In recent weeks Police have started extra patrols around Bradford and Leeds to stop taxi drivers being targeted by youths. West Yorkshire Police have stepped up both visible and undercover patrols to deter antisocial behaviour. Countless drivers have said they were becoming increasingly worried about being targeted by youths.
Perils
Last year, one driver Rizwan
Khan, was struck in the face with a glass bottle in what he believed was a racially aggravated attack. He briefly left his taxi to collect a customer from the Wykebeck Arms, Halton, where he was verbally abused by a crowd of people. He then became involved in a scuffle after being hit in the face by a bottle and punched in the side of the head. The 30-year-old has been deeply affected by the assault, which left him with a broken cheek bone and black eye, but the injuries are more than physical. Now he feels reluctant to go back to work and fears that he may be the victim of another attack. Mr Khan said: “I got out the car to get my customer when someone shouted: ‘Get back in your car, you Paki b*****d!’ “Then the bottle hit my face and I was punched in the head – I feared for my life at the time. “I had a broken cheek bone and a swollen temple. I was spitting blood and I couldn’t chew or sleep properly. “I believe it was racially aggravated because you can’t say racist remarks like that.” “I’ve worked all my life but I don’t want to work nights anymore – I’m scared to.”
and it is unacceptable that our drivers should be treated in this way and risk injury to themselves and damage to their vehicles."
Insp Pete Tuff of Eccleshill Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "We are stepping up patrols at sensitive times and carrying out other work to try and identify the culprits. "Those who risk causing serious damage to cars and potentially serious injuries to drivers and this behaviour will not be tolerated." A spokesperson for the private hire drivers in Eccleshill, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "We provide a service to residents in Ravenscliffe

follow us on twitter: Asian businesses in Yorkshire paid almost £100,000 in penalties for employing illegal workers during the summer months of last year, a report has revealed. The UK Border Agency (UKBA) imposed a number of fines on 16 establishments between 1st July and 30th September, 2011. The maximum penalty for the employer is £10,000 per illegal worker and may be liable to imprisonment if they are convicted on indictment. Figures show that £99,500 was forked out by Asian firms in the region in just three months. The owner of a fast food chain in Rotherham was issued with a £15,000 penalty, one of the highest in Yorkshire, the NorthEast and Humberside. Employers are given strict guidelines to follow when taking on migrant workers, requesting them to make the necessary document checks to avoid criminalising themselves. A statement from UKBA said: “Illegal working has damaging social and economic consequences for the UK. It undercuts businesses that operate within the law, undercuts British workers, and exploits migrant workers. “As long as there are job opportunities for illegal workers, the UK will be an attractive place for illegal migrants. This government works with UK employers to

ensure they take their responsibility of avoiding employing illegal workers seriously.” Business owners are entitled to appeal any cases made against them, but they must prove that they checked all the documents of the worker in question, acknowledged any warnings issued by the authorities and co-operated with UKBA. The Government has imposed an immigration cap of 20,700 non-EU migrant workers coming to Britain under Tier 2 of the visa system, which some companies believe has damaged business but there is little evidence of this. The limit does not apply to multinational companies transferring workers from overseas departments to British offices, although strict conditions apply to who has the right to stay in the UK for long periods of time. During July 1st and September 30th last year 9,706 Tier 2 migrant workers came to the UK, including general workers, ministers of religion, sportspeople and work permit holders. Immigration Minster, Damian Green, was recently quoted as saying migrants must “add to the quality of life in Britain.” The Tory MP also said that he wanted to redefine the “pointsbased system” as a “contribution-based system.”

follow us on twitter: Leeds came to a standstill last weekend as tributes were paid to those who have fallen in battle since the First World War. Remembrance Sunday was respectfully observed in the city centre, where wreaths and poppies were laid near the war memorial on the Headrow. Hundreds turned out on the day to pay their respects and spread the message of remembrance on the annual Mr Gobind Singh, a prominent member of the Sikh community who had helped organise the Sikh reef laying ceremony, said he was proud to see such a turnout. “It was excellent to see so many people turn out on the day, and the same has to be said about the amount of representatives from the Sikh community who were paying their respects,” he said. “The service was observed perfectly by all which really makes you proud of the people of our great city. “As a Sikh, it was also refreshing to see so many fellow Sikhs and how welcoming the rest of the community was. It really was a day to remember with Leeds uniting for this amazing cause.” Remembrance Sunday was originally conceived as a commemoration of the war dead of the First World War but after the Second World War the scope of the ceremony was extended to focus on the nation's dead of both World Wars. In 1980 it was widened once again to extend the remembrance to all those who have suffered and died in conflict in the service of their country and all those who mourn them.

Would Muslims fight on the front line against their own CALL OF DUTY: Muslim soldiers in Afghanistan
The conflict within
Religious perspective
Leeds Islamic teacher Imran Nazir said it was a tricky situation for a Muslim to find him or herself in. He said, while it was important for them to respect their country and integrate there was a fine line with the Islamic interpretation. “The Holy Quran teaches that whoever kills an innocent, it is as if he has killed all mankind; and whoever saves a person, it is as if he has saved all mankind. “So for a Muslim this creates problems in itself. Personally I don’t really agree with this ‘war’ anyway so Muslim or non Muslim I would be advising against anybody going out there. “I do see the problem of identity for Muslims though, although I don’t condone what these terrorists are doing, there are many innocent Muslims who are dying as well, and I don’t support that for one minute.”
There are outreach programmes up and down the country aiming to recruit and engage from the Muslim community. But they’ve proved not as effective as intended thus far.
‘Not English way’
A Birmingham Imam recently said that Muslims should not fight in the British armed forces on conscientious grounds due to their presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. Shaykh Asrar Rashid, a visiting cleric at the city's mosques, also said the Queen was "a disgusting woman" for knighting author Salman Rushdie. In 1989 Iran's leaders called for the death of Mr Rushdie for writing The Satanic Verses, deemed "blasphemous". He said: "If a foreign government invaded England tomorrow we as Muslims would defend these areas and our way of life. “It's not that I hate English people, or English soldiers who have gone abroad, or that I don't feel for the mothers of these soldiers. But the fact is they should make conscientious decisions as well. "That we must only fight wars which are in our interest, and invading Iraq and then oppressing the Iraqi people and Afghani people, is not the English way," he added. The Muslim Council of Britain, an umbrella group representing more than 500 Muslim organisations in the UK, said Muslims had a duty to contribute to the "betterment" of the society they lived in.
Muslims more patriotic that Brits?
The findings of the Demos report ‘A place for Pride’ saw that 83 per cent of Muslims said they were proud to be a British citizen compared with the national average of 79 per cent. A spokesman said: "Theologically speaking there is nothing that prevents a Muslim joining the British army. “As Muslims we are ready to show respect to leaders. We may disagree with some of the things she might do and say but that does not give us the right to be insulting." Zeeshan Hashmi, whose brother Jabron was the first British Muslim killed while fighting in Afghanistan, said: “I am privileged living in Britain. One of the key traits of living in this country and being a Brit is that we have free speech. Based on that the Imam can say all of these things living in a very free society. “At the same time being an ex-soldier and having lost my brother in Afghanistan, I can easily sympathise with his views.” Mohammed Beg is to become one of the few British Muslims to risk their lives for their country as he will take on the Communication Systems Operator. Speaking to The Asian Express, he said it was a proud day for him and that he didn’t think about his religion when applying. He said: “My family and friends are really supportive of my choice to join the Army and I have had a lot of compliments crediting my determination and dedication to training. They’re all looking forward to seeing me at my Passing Out parade, we’ve been told that it’s one of the proudest moments in a soldier’s career so I expect it will be quite emotional.”

British Muslims make up a tiny proportion of Britain's armed forces. But they are vital to an organisation that wants to show military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan are not wars against Islam. We find out what the word on the street is from British Muslims and ask whether or not they’d seriously join the British Army to protect their country. When L/Cpl Jabron Hashmi became the first British Muslim soldier to die in Afghanistan in July 2006, his death prompted debate about what motivates Muslims to join the armed forces. Bradford based student Adil Mubarak said he was given masses of information during school about joining the armed forces but always felt uncomfortable with the idea of fighting against ‘his own.’ The 19-year-old Muslim said: “During career days and stuff, we always got a barrage of facts and figures from people wanting us to join the army. “I always felt a little nervous when they’d ask me, because obviously I am a Muslim and, for whatever reason, could not kill another Muslim, or any other human being for that matter. “It’s a war that’s not really been popular anyway, and all you hear about on the news is our soldiers dying out there, what incentive can that give anybody to join up? It’s not only a religious reason, I don’t want anything to happen to me either.” However, 22-year-old law graduate Sameera Yusuf said she didn’t have a problem signing up to the army, because Britain is ‘our home.’ The Halifax trainee lawyer said: “Just because we are Muslims it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t fight for our country. Those people who are threatening to blow this country up are not Muslims, they just use the name. “Surely the best way of integrating this country is to fight alongside your fellow Brits for the good of the country. A Ministry of Defense spokesman said: “Once in the armed forces, Muslims could still practice their faith as far as practicable.” “We try to accommodate people with religious beliefs as far as possible - we even have halal ration packs.”

ROGUE CHEFS Ever had a dodgy stomach the morning after a curry? It must be a stomach bug or something, unless the pain in your gut is being prepared and served by unqualified, irresponsible cooks who have no prior experience of professional catering? The most popular dish in the UK is chicken tikka masala, but it is probably one of the easiest to corrupt with unhealthy ingredients, resulting in extreme discomfort for the consumer, and sometimes long term health issues. Atul Kochhar, the twice Michelin Starred chef at Benares and one of the stars of cookery programmes such as The Great British Menu, was kind enough to share his opinions with the Asian Express. He said: “The natural colour has been used in Asian cooking for long time but it got replaced by artificial colour sometime in 19th Century. Since then its use has been abused rather than provide colour for a reason. I do not like the use of artificial colour in the food at all. “We use only natural source of colour – if ever we have to use – however, we prefer not to use any form of colour in our food. ‘Nature gives us the Best’ is our policy. Artificial colour using restaurants are making Indian food look cheap just to make little better profit. When asked about the relevance of Indian food in Britain, he added: “It is quite a favoured cuisine in the UK. It has a long history with Indian food and it was one of the first Asian food to reach UK. Due to its long presence in the UK – Indian cuisine of UK is considered part of local gastronomy and not a foreign cuisine anymore.” Cyrus Todiwala OBE, owner and executive chef at Café Spice Namaste, also spoke exclusively to the Asian Express expressing his concern for the public’s health, the plight of the small business and the importance of British culture. He said: “I am opposed to
Unregulated and unqualified, the Asian cooks giving the curry industry a bad name are put under the microscope
artificial colours. The British public needs to be educated on what to expect. “A lot of people expect Indian food to be brightly coloured. The battle for chefs like me and others is to educate people on the matter. The attitude to Asian food is that it is cheap and cheerful but we have to prove that wrong. “It’s difficult for the smaller business because they have smaller profit margins and more competition. They get into the bad habit of using colours and they are afraid that they will stop using they lose their customers. They need to stop serving greasy and fatty foods, too. “I threw out all of the dyes and colourings in my first kitchen and I received complaints saying my tandoori dishes were the wrong colour. If the smaller businesses had more courage, better standards and better knowledge the bad cooking practices would stop. “I think the British public has one of the most discerning palates in the world and they have chosen Indian dishes as their favourite because the food is open like the culture. I just wish the British public was more patriotic.” Who is to blame? Preparing a curry is an art in itself. An accomplished chef can use over 20 spices when making the base for a dish, in order to create something that is vibrant in both flavour and appearance. The essence of making curries is that it is an unregulated practice However, a cook who may cut corners, adding dyes and food
colourings to create the resplendent red sauce usually associated with chicken tikka masala. As restaurants and takeaways appear on every street corner, poor quality curries are slowly becoming a problem for the well-being of the public and Asian culture itself. Health issues. Salt is another culprit in Asian cuisine, as the communal nature of preparing a curry makes it difficult to gauge how much salt is added. The Department of Health, which now regulates salt content in food, has found that 75 per cent of the salt we eat is already in food. David Pickering at Trading Standards said: “It is not our job to say to people that having a takeaway is dangerous, but it is our job to step in when a restaurant or takeaway has been reported as being dangerous. “For whatever reason people find their local Indian restaurant makes great curries then you go to another and their curries are a poor quality. “We recently inspected a takeaway restaurant that had 27g of salt in one meal which is just unacceptable.” A person’s recommended salt intake is 6g a day, anymore than this can raise blood pressure and ultimately put you at risk of heart disease and strokes. Food colourings are increasingly becoming a crisis for the wellbeing of people eating curries. Guidelines set by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) state: “colours may only be used if they perform a useful purpose, are safe and do not mislead the consumer.”
What the experts say…
Huz Patel, Brand Development at Lubna Foods LTD, a major supplier of spices, said: “There must be a certificate of authenticity and you have to go to credible retailers. “You also have to work with people who are in it to make a quality product that’s why we check everything with the European Spice Association (ESA). We always try to buy spices which are pure. “The ESA set a standard and we have to meet their requirements. We have ethical suppliers. We send a sample off to our labs to check that everything is above board, this includes checking for Sudan I, which is related to heart problems, and high ash content. “When we recruit someone in the purchasing department we are very careful. They must have the correct background.”
NATURAL PRODUCE: BBC’s Atul Kochhar champions the notion ‘Nature gives us the Best’
Further research initiated by the FSA and Trading Standards has found some artificial colourings in particular are singlehandedly contributing to a decline in health. Colours such as tartrazine, sunset yellow and allura red are known to be added to curries, and it is these curries that the FSA and Trading Standards have linked to hyperactivity. Prolonging the problem. The notion of having a few drinks and going for a curry, famously covered by the sketch show ‘Goodness Gracious Me,’ is still very popular amongst Britons up and down the country. As a multi-cultural society, it is commendable that Asian cuisine is part of British culture, but are drunk punters, whose culinary judgement NO CLUE: Some chefs are making meals that are neither authentic nor healthy
SETTING THE STANDARD: Cyrus Todiwala OBE has built an empire on authentic dishes and sustainable ingredients
has been affected by the alcohol in their system, keeping a substandard curry industry alive? Asian Express will be delving deeper into this issue over the coming weeks, investigating the use of spice, salt and food colouring used in restaurants ranging from the award-winners to the doorstep dinners.

Interfaith fortnight
Murder suspect may have fled the country
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A special two weeks of learning began last week, as Horton Grange Primary School’s youngsters got hands on with promoting equality in the classroom. With more than 700 children attending the school, Horton Grange is one of the biggest Primary educational establishments in Bradford and boasts an array of nationalities and religions within the classrooms. Already recognised as one of the leading schools in the country for promoting diversity, the school was the first nationally to receive the Stephen Lawrence Award at Level Two. The accolade recognises the extensive work done by the school to promote cohesion in the multi-cultured society. The Interfaith fortnight included a host of activities which gave the children a chance to learn about different religious and non-religious
faiths, whilst every year group were allocated a specific religion to study throughout the programme. The Punjabi Roots Academy staged a number of performances for all the children earlier this week and entertained the crowds with their unique dance and performance act. The Academy were the latest guests at the school who were invited to promote diversity, with the likes of the Make Bradford British cast, and Show Racism the Red Card representatives previously holding workshops to spread similar messages. Ms Niela Ahmed, RE and Equality Co-ordinator, has been working at the school for 13 years and believes there is no other establishment quite like Horton Grange. She explained: “I love working here, it is a fantastic place to be even with the 700 pupils we have. “We are a multi-faith, multicultural school who aim to promote tolerance and understanding to the children
in an attempt to build a cohesive community here in Bradford. “It is vitally important that children recognise everybody is unique in their own way, yet at the same time we are also the same. Every person is a human being at the end of the day and therefore we try to spread this message as much as we can. “The Stephen Lawrence award is a great honour and represents how much our school actually does to promote equality.” Children from a number of religions and nationalities all currently attend the Bradford school, with pupils coming from as far as Somalia and Libya. A dedicated Language Support Unit has been put in place to cater for these pupils and help integrate them into the educational system. Even with a number of challenges and hurdles to overcome the school were still labelled ‘Good’ in their latest OFSTED report, highlighting how they really do live by their motto, ‘Celebrating Success Together’.

A peer support group for people living with dementia in Leeds has been hitting the high notes by winning a local arts award. The Cultural Partnership group, part of Leeds City Council’s Peer Support Service, won the Arts in Health award at the recent Love Arts Leeds festival. The group runs a programme of activities at arts and heritage venues including the West Yorkshire Playhouse, the Leeds Museum Discovery Centre and the Leeds Central Library. A recent project saw the group, for people in the early stages of dementia and their carers, share their favourite memories of hit musicals they had seen. Members also met theatre staff and crew members and even created and recorded their own song as part of the Musical Memories scheme.

EDUCATION
• A new study, published in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology, has suggested that parents should remove televisions, computers and mobile phones from children’s bedrooms as they cause anxiety and prevent sleep which ruins school performance. Researchers have found that having televisions and games consoles in the bedroom teaches the brain to see the room as an entertainment zone rather than a place for quiet and rest. According to the study, losing as little as an hour’s sleep can ruin a child’s performance at school. Pupils who have late nights find maths problems harder to solve and have poorer memory skills. However, bringing bedtime forward – even by 60 minutes – makes children calmer and better able to concentrate. • Children whose parents have professional or managerial jobs are more than three times more likely to attend a top university than working-class students, even when they have earned the required grades. Research published by the Sutton Trust links a child's social class with their chances of attending a top-tier university. It reported that the wide gap in attendance between the two groups was only partly due to academic ability. According to the report – which contrasts university admissions and access in different countries – 27% of the difference in admissions between the social classes in England was not academic. The report suggests that potential students from disadvantaged backgrounds should be encouraged from the age of 14 to consider attending elite universities, in order to overcome the social barriers that may be stopping them from applying. The Sutton Trust runs a series of summer schools for 1,700 "non-privileged" pupils from state schools to visit top universities such as Durham and Cambridge to encourage them to apply. • The Association of Colleges has launched an online government petition to gather support for its Careers Guidance: Guaranteed Campaign. The campaign calls for all young people to have access to careers advice on all post-14 education, training and employment options. As part of the campaign, AoC is asking for colleges, Jobcentre Plus and local authorities to work together to ensure there is a local careers ‘hub’, which is clearly signposted as the place to go for careers advice. Michele Sutton, President of the Association of Colleges, and Group Chief Executive of Bradford College, said: “It’s crucial that young people have access to information about all the options which are available to them to enable them to make informed decisions about what career paths to pursue. AoC hopes that the campaign will improve the provision of careers advice available to students, so that websites such as the National Careers Service are engaging with and targeting people from a variety of backgrounds and being more effective in showing young people the variety of academic and vocational options available to them." • A call to make companies legally obliged to offer high-quality apprenticeships has been taken to the House of Lords. The petition is aimed at persuading the government to change the Companies Act so that organisations are forced to fulfil social obligations, including giving young people opportunities to get into work through apprenticeships and traineeships. Professor Martyn Sloman, who is behind the move, said it was time for a radical new approach otherwise the UK would "either continue to live with a 20 per cent unemployment rate among 16- to 24-year-olds or have some sort of social uproar". • Labour leader, Ed Milliband, has highlighted the growing dependence on overseas workers and set up a new independent taskforce to review the IT skills gap in the UK. Miliband has warned that under a Labour government British IT firms filling staff shortages from outside the EU, mainly the Indian subcontinent, will be required to take on a full-time British apprentice for each overseas recruit. Official government figures show that the number of people starting apprenticeships in Information & Communication Technology (ICT) fell by 26% last year. However, at the same time Tier 2 high skilled migrant visa applications, increased by 7% to 43,485, of which the largest single group (18,304) were from the ICT sector. According to Home Office figures, 40% of tier 2 migration has been driven by demand from the ICT sector since 2010.

Dr Mohammed Ali OBE of QED comments on his recent visit to Pakistan I was born in a village Moosa, in district Attock of Pakistan and came to live in Bradford at the age of 13. My father was keen I studied, he spent 25 years in the Merchant Navy and experienced really hard work, before he came to Bradford and worked in the mills. He had seen the value of education. Now, as CEO of QED-UK spending 23 years addressing inequality in society, I recently returned from an exhilarating ten-day trip to my home country as part of an international Commission to help shape new initiatives to boost Pakistan’s social economy. The Commission on Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Pakistan comprised 15 members from UK, Italy, Australia and Pakistan. We spent ten days travelling to Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, visiting social enterprises, meeting activists, academics, philanthropists and people who care for the future of their country. Our findings will help ascertain the support required from policy makers, educators, businesses and NGOs, and will be used to prepare new initiatives on trade, investment and learning. But rather than the UK telling Pakistan how best to boost its social economy, what I’ve learnt is how the UK can learn from their social spirit. Entrepreneurship is a mindset. It’s a term associated with the wealthy elite, but the thirst on the ground with young people is palpable. With the right support – via education –there’s nothing more powerful than ethical motivation and belief in a cause. The social enterprises I saw proves that even where there are infrastructural
constraints, there are leapfrog opportunities. But poverty can’t be fixed by passion alone, there needs to be strong public institutions and strong governance in place. Pakistan needs better management. There’s a deep dissatisfaction amongst Pakistan’s youth with the divisions in society, which is one of the driving forces behind their desire to be entrepreneurial. In one session we attended 15 out of 46 students wanted to set up their own business. Pakistan has 180m people, over 70% under the age of 30, and it is estimated 3m jobs are needed annually to meet the employment needs-social enterprises are one of the solutions to this predicament. Mentorships, role models, literacy programmes, and education that encourages vision is key to unleashing positive attitudes in Pakistan, as well as teaching at primary school level to instil selfconfidence, particularly amongst women, who face psychological cultural oppression. The worst poverty is the poverty of thoughts. Pakistan is a country not only under siege by natural disasters, but is
undergoing a historic transfer of power. Against this shifting landscape, the life-force of innovation around social enterprise is humbling. Rather than see the first democratic change of government as daunting, the feeling was this was the perfect time for new ideas. Pakistani society has an outstanding record in civic
entrepreneurship. The Citizens’ Foundation runs over 900 schools across the country charging one dollar a month. The Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) has managed €1.6bn for the last 12 years giving loans to 2.5m people to help rejuvenate enterprise in rural areas. We visited a private University for lower middle class students which started with $20,000 investment capital. We even found that Pakistan has developed an online movement for entrepreneurship which has gathered 600,000 users. What stood out was the optimism and resilience of all those I encountered in both urban and rural communities, despite the hurdles the country faces in overcoming corruption and division within its society – the primary barriers to fulfilling its potential. Which brings me back home, to the UK. According to research by Joseph Rowntree Foundation, 22% of people in the UK live in households where the income is less than half the national average. For some ethnic minority groups this figure is 60%. Factors for this unacceptable poverty gap include multiple disadvantages: educational under-achievement, high unemployment/underemployme nt and health inequalities. It has been my life’s work to break down barriers for ethnic minorities. We don’t have the barriers Pakistan faces, yet their spirit is one we can learn from. Social enterprise offers a powerful mechanism for economic regeneration at a grass roots level. Our social economy can do more, with the right infrastructure, to address the needless disadvantage and inequalities our own, advanced, Western society is still riddled with.

New Arrests after vicious hoax call TARGETED: Owner, Razaul Karim outside the takeaway
North Yorkshire Police have arrested a second suspect following a bomb hoax in Knaresborough on the 16th October 2013. The Paragon Pizza takeaway was victim to a ‘cruel prank’ which saw the owner and his staff subject to a thorough police search after it was alleged that there were dangerous materials inside the unit. After a search it was deemed that the call to the police was a hoax and that the staff at the takeaway were innocent parties. A 22-year-old man from Leeds has now been arrested earlier this week, on 13th November, and interviewed by officers from the Major Crime Unit. The individual, who remains unnamed, has been given police bail while enquiries continue into the incident. The 21-year-old man who was arrested on 18th October in regard to the same incident has been re-bailed with both men due to answer bail in the New Year.
Bradford-based shoe retailer in administration again Barratts Shoes, which employs 1,035 people in the UK and Ireland, has entered administration, it was announced this week. It is the third time in four years that the future of the Bradford-based retailer, formerly known as Stylo,
has been in this situation. The shoe retailer, which markets the Hush Puppies, Caterpillar and Kickers brands, collapsed after a deal with a potential investor fell through. The deal would have injected £5 million into the business as the company sought to shore up its finances. Philip Duffy and David Whitehouse of financial advisory and investment banking firm Duff & Phelps
were appointed administrators. They are reviewing the company’s financial position while seeking to sell it as a going concern but have warned that redundancies and store closures cannot be ruled out. Barratts Shoes has 75 stores and 23 concessions and employs over 1,000 people with 150 staff based at its Apperley Bridge headquarters.

Viper unleashed in West Yorkshire
FALSE ALARM: Although the bite of the steatoda nobilis (false black widow spider) is painful, it’s not life threatening
The false widow spider (or steatoda nobilis, to use its posh name), Britain’s most venomous eight-legged creepy crawly, is spreading across the UK. Previously found mainly in southern England, the bug has recently been given a sense of wanderlust by our warmer climate this year. This has meant more sightings and, yikes, more reports of people being bitten across the UK. But how worried should we be? The honest truth is: not very much. Though the false black widow spiders’ bite can be extremely painful, it’s not lifethreatening. The bite itself can cause a local burning sensation and swelling which usually calms down to a tingling sensation within a few hours. The fear, however, of this eight-legged creepy crawly is not unfounded. Black widow spiders are one of only two species of spiders in North America that are known to have venom that is extremely poisonous to humans. So poisonous in fact, that it can in some instances even cause death. A bite from a real black widow spider will also attack the central nervous system and the respiratory system, causing severe pain and agony. It’s no wonder then that the black widow is a spider to be extremely cautious of, and to stay away from whenever possible.
Fake or the real deal?
The experts say that the way to identify the false one from the genuine black widow is to look at its belly – that’s if you haven’t passed out before this step. Here, the true black widow spider will have either a series of red dots, or two
Sighting of the false black widow causes a wave of panic
small red triangles. If you see these, you know that you are seeing a true black widow spider. If you don’t see them, it’s most likely a Steatoda.
Spinning a yarn
In fairness, the false black widow spider (about the size of a 50p piece) does come from the black widow family and can pack a nasty sting. But, as bug expert Stuart Hine puts it: “A bite is extraordinarily rare, and usually no worse than a bee sting – though a very few people may have an allergic reaction and experience something more severe.”
WHAT DO IF BITTEN BY A FALSE BLACK WIDOW
‘Never been bitten’
Many have breathlessly cited the example of a shopper who collapsed after being bitten ten times. This is true, but it only happened because the false widow had got trapped in his hoodie and was trying to escape. It was a one-off, freak incident. Stuart explains: “These spiders don’t wake up in the morning and dash out of their webs looking for someone to bite. “I’ve handled a lot of them and never been bitten. They only ever attack if they feel trapped.”
‘Not aggressive’
The false widow is thought to have arrived here over 100 years ago from the Canary Islands, in a shipment of bananas. It has a brown bulbous abdomen with cream markings that look spookily like a skull. But, far from being flesh-crazed monsters, they are described by entomologists as ‘ponderous, very slowmoving and not at all aggressive’.
Still, it’s best to be prepared. If someone is bitten by a false widow spider, take the following steps: 1. Place a cold compress (such as a frozen bag of peas) on the affected area for ten minutes to minimise the swelling. 2. Monitor the person’s condition, and if it worsens seek medical help.
A new initiative to cut crime across West Yorkshire has made its first strike by sinking its teeth into Bradford's drug dealers. Operation Viper, which is officially launched in the county this week, sees officers from Crime Division, Quartz and Operations Support Services Division team up with local officers and partners, such as councils and housing associations, to target and arrest the county's most prolific criminals. Focusing on those profiting from drug dealing and burglary, Viper struck with a series of raids on addresses in the Bradford District this week, making 41 arrests, seizing £5,000 worth of Class A drugs and £7,500 in cash. Four air weapons were also recovered along with £80,000 of high value goods. Shopping areas, supermarkets and residential crime hotspots across the county will also be priority areas for the operation. Chief Superintendent David Oldroyd is leading the operation, which, he said, would also transfer the fear of crime from communities to criminals. "Viper will make it clear that there is no hiding place for these criminals. They will not feel safe in their own homes and we will do everything we can to bring them to justice. "West Yorkshire Police has an ambition to be a world-class force, where our communities are safe and feel safer, and Viper will help us to achieve that ambition. "The people of West Yorkshire can help us in our bid too, either by reporting criminal or suspicious activity on 101, directly to their local officers or by becoming a Special Constable or police volunteer." Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire Mark BurnsWilliamson, said: "Tackling drugs in Bradford is one of my priorities and Operation Viper will help to ease people's fear of drug crime in the city. "I have seen at first hand the success of previous partnership operations to tackle drug dealing in the city, and the impact they have had on those communities. "But there is more work to be done and that's why we are seeking the public's help, either by sharing information with their local officers, contacting Crimestoppers or by taking a more prominent role as a Special Constable or police volunteer with West Yorkshire Police." Anyone with information for Operation Viper can call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Flower Power Community group spread positive message through rose giving
TEAM: Da’wah Point’s team of dedicated volunteers
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A newly formed community group in Bradford was out on the streets last month as they attempted to correct any misconceptions around the Islamic faith. Da’wah Point was set up two months ago by a group of young friends who wanted to make a difference in their community. Established in the heart of Manningham, Bradford, the group launched their first initiative last month, which saw the enthusiastic team hand out 1,000 roses to the people of Shipley. Each flower came with a message attached to it with a
quote from the Prophet Muhammad, for example, ‘you do not do evil to those who do evil to you, but you deal with them with forgiveness and kindness’. The day was a huge success for the group who had the chance to speak with people in the local community and discuss interfaith concepts and Islamic messages. 21-year-old Waseem Akram, one of the directors of Da’wah Point, explained how the group came together and why such a unique initiative was staged. “As a group we set up to not only help clear up misconceptions about Islam, but also attempt to bridge gaps between communities by promoting social cohesion,” he explained. “We set up knowing very little about things such as funding and internal structure yet have
overcome a lot already. Our organisation hasn’t been around for a very long time yet we are already beginning to make a lot of inroads. “The latest rose event was thought of by the members as a way of spreading the positive messages within Islam and was a big success, with the community really appreciating the free gifts.” Da’wah point now has plans to continue building up a positive image of Islam through further community events. Discussions and research are currently underway to host a ‘feed the homeless’ event in Bradford to be staged at the end of the year, with other initiatives also in the pipeline. “We saw a report in the news highlighting the high number of homeless people in Bradford,” Mr Akram explained. “Immediately we all wanted to do something to help these people and so members of the group are currently shadowing other food donation groups to ensure that when we take the step to host the event, everything runs smoothly for everybody.”

Dream home
TRASHED UPSET: Former tennant of Huddersfield home, bought by Muslim family, says that he’s had comments such as ‘you don’t belong here’ hurled at him
“It has been a torrent of abuse”
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
When Mr Mohammed purchased, what he believed to be, his dream home in 2010, the Huddersfield businessman had big plans for the property yet three years later, the house remains derelict after years of intimidation. Smashed windows, racist graffiti and even a fire have all been seen at the residence on Inglewood Avenue, Huddersfield, in what the home owners describes as an attack by the ‘racist geriatric mafia’. Mr Mohammed, a father of three, purchased the home hoping to renovate the site and move in with his family yet the constant barrage of abuse has caused him to ‘seriously reconsider’ his plans. “It has been three years since we bought the property and I still do not know what we are going to do with it,” the West Yorkshire insulation manager explained. “Every time I put in a proposal to change something about the house it gets rejected and the abuse begins. It is a minority in the community but they are seriously causing a problem for everybody else.” The words ‘No P*ki Hotel’ were sprayed across the garage door in January 2012 after planning permission had been put in to begin renovating the house, whilst the words ‘No Muslim Hotel’ were added earlier this year and
still remain. 40-year-old Mr Mohammed initially believed that some of the community had racist attitudes towards Muslims yet after renting out the property, his mindset was quickly changed. He said: “I decided to rent out the property to some Eastern Europeans who were looking for a place in the area, they were just students really. “It wasn’t until they moved in that I realised the discrimination which exists
from some of the neighbours. “I remember two of the neighbours saying to them ‘Your kind shouldn’t be living here’. They were shocked and questioned ‘what kind?’, to which the neighbours replied ‘you Eastern Europeans, you don’t deserve to live in such a nice neighbourhood you should go elsewhere’.” Lithuanian student, Darius Lubys, was the tenant subjected to the abuse. After the verbal tirade, a fire was started in the home and subsequently reported to police whereby it was determined an
accelerant had been used. Nobody has been arrested since the event. Mr Mohammed currently has an appeal in place to allow building work to finally begin on his property yet remains pessimistic about the possibility of the plans being approved. He said: “I have had applications turned down before and have been told in advance that they will be rejected because some of the neighbours ‘know people’ on the committee. “Someone recently told me ‘you aren’t building a ‘Mahal’ next door to me’ yet even if we got approval we won’t even be the biggest house on the street. There is one which covers 8,000sq/ft which is much bigger than ours.” Born and raised in Huddersfield, Mr Mohammed must now decide whether his dream property could still serve as a home for his family. Having never been victim of any racist attacks in the past, it is a previously unknown problem which he must now tackle. “The appeal is in now and if it goes through I will certainly take a very long look and consider my position. I can still sell it with permission as I’m thinking about whether I want to be amongst the racist people but there are some nice people there. “At the end of the day, the safety of me and the children is the primary concern. To know these people don’t want you there is totally unnerving so would I want to move in? I still don’t know.”

Listening bus pulls up in Bradford By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
The National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) held a special event in Bradford last week as children and young people were invited to hop aboard the Listening Bus Roadshow. In partnership with Bradfordbased community group, Integrating Communities Active Network (ICAN) and the Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA) which runs Jamia Masjid
Deaf awareness campaign welcomed in City Naqshbandia Aslamia in Bradford, the four hour event welcomed children to come along and take advantage of the free facilities on offer. Visitors had the chance to try out a wide range of the latest technology onboard ranging from Bluetooth neckloops (for iPods, mobile phones and TV) to vibrating alarm clocks, flashing doorbells and amplified phones.
SUPPORT: The Listening Bus Roadshow arrived in Bradford
There was also an iPad to access online resources and apps for deaf young people and signing puppets to keep younger visitors entertained. Almost 100 members of the local community attended which included local residents from the Eastern European communities with interpreters on hand. The interpreters allowed parents to get deafness related information from the friendly bus team led by Damian
Ball, try out the latest gadgets to help deaf children at home and in school, collect copies of NDCS's information resources whilst always increasing their deaf awareness. The event was a historic one for NDCS, as it was the first time the Listening Bus had pulled up in a Masjid. Oududh Choudhary, NDCS’s Family Liaison Officer said: “This was part of the pilot new scheme to take the listening bus to the heart of the community. “It was an excellent event whereby all participants benefited from the Roadshow and deaf awareness was raised to its full potential.” In addition, local visitors of the Masjid were able to learn basic sign language so that they can

communicate with the deaf children who regularly use the services of NADA at the Masjid. Special Saturday deaf classes have continued to run to enable more people to communicate with deaf children. For the last three years NADA, in partnership with I-CAN and NDCS, have been running the weekly free Saturday Deaf classes for young people, their parents and sign language courses which have proved hugely successful. Sahibzada Sufi Amjad Aslam, Chair of NADA, emphasised how important is was to ensure society is inclusive to everybody. He said: “We at NADA are grateful to I-CAN and Oududh Choudhary for organising this much needed fantastic event in raising deaf awareness. We are keen in ensuring our partnership approach with NDCS and I-CAN will continue to blossom so that we can steadfastly continue to support this vulnerable group (deaf people).” Nazim Ali, NADA's General Secretary, added: “It is pleasing and heartwarming to see that our ground-breaking work with I-CAN and NDCS is going from strength to strength and that the local community is taking ownership in proactively raising awareness to ensure deaf young people are accommodated and understood in mainstream society.” For further information please contact Nazim Ali on 07825 698283 or e-mail: nazim27@hotmail.com

Wheels and reels are spinning s the dark nights are closing in and the growing fluorescent army of cyclists persevere with their daily commutes through cold, wind and rain, have you noticed the increasing number of cyclists with a camera mounted to their helmet? GoPro and Contour make popular models which act as a cyclist’s black box if they are involved in a road traffic accident. The video cameras chronicling a cyclist’s daily commute to work are growing in popularity as cyclists want to be in a position where they have evidence to demonstrate they were not at fault and have proof of an offending motorist’s vehicle registration plate if the motorist decides to drive off from the scene of an accident. Between 1999 – 2000, 1575 cyclists were killed on the roads in the UK with the greatest number of deaths and injuries taking place during the morning and evening rush hours, on week days. A consistent grumbling from aggrieved motorists is that cyclists should have their bikes registered and insurance should be made compulsory. Independent Market research firm Consumer Intelligence confirmed that 59% of motorists believe cyclists should have insurance to be on the roads. Picture scenario one; a cyclist covered from head to toe in high visibility gear, lights flashing (so should be clearly visible) but the cyclist chooses to pay no attention to a red light at a junction, carries on without hesitation and despite the best efforts of the motorist (who has slammed on his breaks) he cannot avoid the collision, the cyclist gets an introduction to the tarmac and the motorist’s car is a writeoff. In anyone’s book the fault lies with the cyclist but without any insurance in place on the part of the cyclist the motorist (if he is unsuccessful in pursuing the cyclist personally) has to swallow a hefty repair bill from the garage or a claim on his own insurance,

losing his ‘no claims’ bonus and an inflated premium to look forward to at his next renewal. Picture scenario two now; an uninsured motorist is fast approaching tail back traffic, in an instant he makes a judgment call to take a diversion, without a thought, a cursory look, an indication, let alone a life saver, the motorist pulls a ‘U’ turn and sends the trailing cyclist flying to a certain visit to the nearest Casualty department. The uninsured motorist leaves the scene immediately with no witnesses able to verify the vehicle’s registration plate. The cyclist could not possibly have known the intention of the driver and had no chance to avert the danger but fortunately he has his own insurance and despite an extended lay off from work he is covered for his loss of earnings and injuries suffered. In those circumstances, it may also be possible to submit a claim to the Motor Insurers Bureau. The merits of cyclists being insured is clear to see, however the limiting factor of compulsory insurance for cyclists is regulation. Who is going to pay for bicycles to be registered, as without registration no cyclist would be compelled to hand over their details? The administration of such a scheme would run into hundreds of thousands of pounds with such a burden being met by the taxpayer. Despite there currently being no legal obligation to have cycling insurance, with such policies costing as little as £30-40 a year, (and many cycling clubs offering third party insurance as part of their membership packages), is this a small price to pay for peace of mind? If you are involved in an accident and wish to seek damages please do not hesitate to contact our Personal Injury team on 0113 2279 369.

Aid agencies rise to the challenge as impact of Philippines typhoon is revealed Rogue PPI claim companies targeted by fines and toughened regulation Claims firms which use information gathered by unsolicited calls and texts or who provide poor quality services will face large fines under law changes announced by the Government today. The move marks the latest step in the Government’s work to create a financial sector that serves customers and supports British businesses. Tough new rules are being introduced as part of a package of ongoing work by the government to crack down on the rogue firms responsible for bombarding the public with misleading advertising and flooding banks with unsubstantiated claims for compensation – at a cost to other customers. To ensure that the claims management industry delivers the best possible results for consumers, the Claims Management Regulation (CMR) Unit at the Ministry of Justice will also be expanded with more enforcement staff, funded by an uplift in fees paid by regulated claims firms, and a new set of toughened conduct rules will be unveiled this week to bear down on abuses by companies. Government action has already seen the number of claims firms operating drop by more than 1,000 since a peak of 3,400 in 2011 to 2,300 now. The fines will be used to make sure that those which remain in the industry follow the rules – and that
they pay for it when they do not. Justice Minister Shailesh Vara said: "We will not tolerate companies which waste hardworking people’s time and money through their own laziness, incompetence or frankly dubious practices. "We are already making sure rogue companies are shut down – and now we are ensuring those who are wasting everyone’s time will pay for it." Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Sajid Javid said: "These new rules will put PPI claims pests in their place. "Cold call companies that bother the public will now have one less reason to do so. "This will also help free up the banks to pay legitimate claims more quickly." The fines will be brought in as part of law changes being made through the Financial Services (Banking Reform) Bill which is currently progressing through Parliament. They are expected to take effect next year, when further details on the maximum fine levels will be published. More than 1,100 claims companies specialise in helping people make claims for compensation for mis-sold financial products, like Payment Protection Insurance (PPI). Banks have complained that some firms are responsible for deluging them with inaccurate and incomplete claims
which have caused unnecessary costs and major delays in resolving genuine claims. The new rules being published by the CMR unit this week include giving claims companies a duty to make sure the claims they are submitting have a realistic chance of success, as well as ensuring full evidence is provided to back up any allegations. Firms will also have to carry out thorough audits of how data they use has been gathered, so they can no longer turn a blind eye to whether leads have been found by illegal marketing texts and calls. Kevin Rousell, head of the Claims Management Regulation unit, added: "It is our absolute priority to protect customers and we are making certain that firms are following the rules. "We do not tolerate bad practice and continue to take action against companies which break the rules, including removing their licence to trade. Issuing fines will be an important new weapon for us." As well as employing more staff to tackle irresponsible practice by claims firms, the Government will strengthen the CMR Unit by appointing independent regulatory experts in non-executive roles and will commission a comprehensive review of the independence of the current Claims Management Regulator’s governance arrangements.
The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), a group of 14 UK aid organisations has today said that life saving aid is on the move in the Philippines, despite huge obstacles to reaching survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. Water, food and emergency shelter remain the top priority. Impassable roads, closed ports, an ill-equipped airport and increasing security concerns have been among the top challenges faced by aid agencies trying to get relief to over 11 million affected people. The biggest obstacle is blocked roads, which are narrow, strewn with heavy debris and in many cases impassable by vehicles. Many aid workers are carrying out assessments on foot, walking for hours across rough terrain. One agency has sent mountain bikes to its team in Tacloban, one of the worst affected areas, to cross roads destroyed by landslides. Coree Steadmen, Christian Aid’s Emergency Manager in the Philippines said: “The devastation here is unimaginable. Aid workers are walking for hours and not seeing a single standing building. “Most roads are covered with fallen trees and collapsed houses. Where roads are accessible, they are grid locked with cars fleeing the area. Getting aid through is tough, but we are resourceful and we will find a way.” The airport in Tacloban is too small for aid agencies to fly in the volume of water, food and shelter materials needed and until yesterday, sea ports have been closed or congested. Aid planes are now being flown into Manila and Cebu, while a potential boat route is being
considered. However onward road travel to Tacloban and other affected areas remain a challenge, with some agencies requesting army helicopters to access the hardest to reach communities. Telephone lines and the internet have been offline for days, making contact with affected communities and Filipino partner agencies impossible. However communications infrastructure is gradually being restored and aid workers say it will make a significant difference to the coordination and movement of aid. The Philippines government is experienced in dealing with the effects of storms, but the devastation caused by the typhoon is unprecedented. The government, army and police have lost a significant number of staff; killed bereaved or otherwise impacted by the disaster. This is understandably affecting their capacity to coordinate the response. Added to the challenge is the security situation, which is becoming increasingly volatile. People are desperate for food and water and a few of them are resorting to taking what they need to survive by force. Saleh Saeed, Chief executive of the DEC said: “In a seemingly impossible situation, aid agencies are finding ways to get life-saving aid to those who need it. The logistical challenges are huge, but with the support of UK donations we are overcoming them. “We are now calling on the Philippines government and United Nations to prioritise road clearance and set up key distribution locations to enable aid agencies to coordinate the relief effort as effectively as possible.”

HISTORIC: For almost 800 years, since the time of medieval King John, every newly-elected Lord Mayor of London has to leave the safety of the City of London and travel up the Thames to Westminster to swear loyalty to the Crown

Luxury British sports car maker Aston Martin is celebrating a successful role in one of the world’s most famous parades as six of the company’s models took to the streets of London on Saturday (9th November) for the historic pageant that is the Lord Mayor’s Show. Adding more than a dash of glamour to proceedings, the stunning selection of sought-after sports cars joined the three-and-ahalf-mile-long cavalcade at the invitation of The Worshipful Company of Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers of London which selected the marque to participate in this, the firm’s centenary year. The Aston Martins, which included a Vanquish Coupe

dressed in the unmistakable Union Jack-inspired livery of the UK Government’s GREAT Britain campaign, made their way through the capital’s packed streets at a decidedly stately three miles per hour as an estimated half million spectators looked on. Aston Martin is proudly partnering with the GREAT Britain campaign, the biggest ever initiative to showcase the very best of what Britain has to offer, driving investment, students and tourism to the UK. Joining the uniquely eyecatching Vanquish Coupe in London was the new Vanquish
Volante convertible – launched to eager buyers worldwide just a few weeks ago. Sharing the limelight in the capital were examples of Aston Martin’s four-door sports car, the luxurious Rapide S, and elegantly timeless GT, the DB9. For almost 800 years, since, the time of medieval King John, every newly-elected Lord Mayor of London has to leave the safety of the City of London and travel up the Thames to Westminster to swear loyalty to the Crown. Over the centuries the Mayor's journey has become one of London's favourite rituals, and
around it grew the splendid festival that we know today as the Lord Mayor's Show. The modern procession fills the space between Bank and Aldwych over a three- to four-hour period, cheered by a crowd of around half a million people and watched live on the BBC by millions more. The focus on Aston Martin in this year’s event continues the brand’s year-long centenary party that began in London back in January with the unveiling of a plaque in Chelsea’s Henniker Mews – original home of the company that went on to become Aston Martin Lagonda.

Fight for lifesaving vaccine goes on
Meningitis Now has vowed to continue its fight for a Meningitis B vaccine, after the Government announced that it’s considering new evidence to support its introduction into the childhood immunisation schedule. Meningitis Now Executive Founder, Steve Dayman, lost his son Spencer to meningitis in 1982. Responding to the news, he said: “We know that the Government wants to bring in vaccines that save lives and we welcome the news that they are looking at more evidence to support its introduction. “But as we head into winter, cases of meningitis will increase and we are concerned that time lost is lives lost. “Meningitis is the disease parents fear most and this vaccine is expected to wipe out at least 73 per cent of the most common form of bacterial meningitis in the UK. We launched our Beat it Now campaign earlier this year to bring in the vaccine as soon as possible. “We know there is strong public support and we are urging everyone to sign our campaign petition now and to urge the government to introduce this new vaccine through the NHS without further delay.” The Meningitis B vaccine was licensed for use in the UK in January, but in July the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) published a statement saying that evidence was insufficient to substantiate its costeffectiveness. The charity was asked to comment and responded with its own detailed recommendations. This latest update shows that they are considering additional evidence and expect to report again in February 2014. For more information on Meningitis Now www.MeningitisNow.org

offered to pay him £19,000. She wanted to set up her former lover after a stormy break-up. Between 28th February and 2nd October 2012 Withnell illegally obtained information on a police database and drafted a charging advice form purporting to be a lawyer from the CPS relating to a £500,000 money laundering investigation. The advice suggested that offences under investigation should either be discontinued or subject of lesser charges. The form was then sent on to a friend of the person subject of the criminal investigation via Withnell’s GMP email. On 16th March 2013 Withnell sent an anonymous text message to a police officer indicating a hit man had been paid to kill Daniel Withnell knowing these details were false. Assistant Chief Constable Dawn Copley said: "The conduct of former DC Daniel Withnell fell well short of what is expected of a police officer. "Police officers, staff and the communities of Greater Manchester would be appalled by his actions, which detract from the hard work that our officers and staff do on a daily basis. "GMP expects the very highest standards of all its officers and staff. They should be honest and act with integrity and should not compromise or abuse their position. "As soon as this conduct came to light, the Professional Standards Branch carried out a thorough investigation, supervised by the IPCC and as a result Mr Withnell has been convicted of two counts of misconduct in public office and perverting the course of justice and Ms Smethhurst has been convicted of perverting the course of justice."

Be clear on cancer
DON’T DELAY: Dr Anant Sachdev says blood in the urine can be for many reasons including infections and possibly cancer of the bladder or kidney
South Asians urged to go to their doctor early if signs or symptoms are spotted
A new ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ national campaign was launched this week, to increase early diagnoses of bladder and kidney cancer and save lives. Receiving an early diagnosis increases the chance of survival for the 16,600 people who are diagnosed with bladder or kidney cancer every year in England. A new NHS ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign launches this week, to drive awareness of blood in urine as a key symptom of bladder and kidney cancers, and encourage people to visit their doctor if they spot the symptom, even just the once. One of the reasons people do not receive an early diagnosis is believed to be the public’s lack of awareness of the key symptoms. Blood in urine – even if it appears just the once – could be a symptom of both bladder and kidney cancer. New figures, however, show that the public doesn’t recognise the seriousness of the sign – almost a third (30 per cent) of people would wait and see if they spotted blood in their urine again before taking any action, which could delay their diagnosis. It is also believed that within South Asian communities there are cultural and religious reasons that can prevent people from seeing their doctor early. There is often a strong
fear of cancer, a perception that cancer is an incurable disease that quickly leads to death. Some believe that by talking about it is tempting fate. But finding it early makes it more treatable so if you notice blood in your urine tell your doctor straight away. Professor Kevin Fenton, Director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England said: “Early diagnosis and treatment of bladder and kidney cancer can save lives. We need to overcome the barriers preventing people presenting early to their doctors so that we can save more lives across all communities. “Our message is clear – as soon as you spot blood in your urine, visit the doctor. It’s probably nothing serious but it could also be a sign of something else that needs treatment, so don’t ignore the symptoms or put off a trip to the doctor.” Visible blood in urine is a key symptom in around eight in ten bladder cancers and over half of kidney cancers. However, when the public was asked to name cancer signs and symptoms, only a third (33 per cent) of people mention unexplained bleeding. Dr Anant Sachdev, Cancer Lead for Bracknell, Berkshire said: “It is alarming when blood is noticed in the urine - and ignoring this is not an option - see your
doctor as soon as possible. “Blood in the urine can be for many reasons including infections and indeed cancer of the bladder or kidney. This must not be ignored and I would urge any person who has blood in their urine to see their doctor straight away. After an assessment your doctor may refer you to the hospital for further tests. “If cancer is found, early and timely diagnosis will result in a good long term possibility of survival.” Blood in your urine is the most common symptom for both types of cancer. Other bladder cancer symptoms include needing to urinate very often or very suddenly and/or pain while urinating. Other kidney cancer symptoms include a pain below the ribs that doesn’t go away or a lump in your stomach. The Be Clear on Cancer campaign will see new national adverts running on TV, print and radio from 15th October until 20th November. As well as face-to-face events taking place across England. Symptom cards are available in Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi and Urdu on Cancer Research UK’s website. For more information on the campaign, bladder and kidney cancer visit nhs.uk/bloodinpee.

Prince of Wales’ mentoring initiative delivers masterclass at World Islamic Economic Forum Jail for Birmingham Airport’s smuggling pair
The 9th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) was held at Excel London on 29 31 October 2013 under the theme "Changing World, New Relationships". The forum aimed to encapsulate the emergence of new economic linkages between nations across borders, religions and cultures in a fast changing world. During the Forum, Mosaic was delighted to jointly deliver a masterclass session addressing Youth Unemployment and Apprenticeships with the Ashoka Foundation and Youth Business International (YBI). The session showcased the role of the Prince's Charities, of which Mosaic is a part, in tackling youth unemployment and apprenticeships. A key component of the masterclass was discussion around the role of entrepreneurship in reducing youth unemployment; a particularly timely discussion as we prepare for the launch of 2013/2014 Apax-Mosaic Enterprise Challenge during Global Entrepreneurship Week, which will take place during 18-24 November 2013. The masterclass session was designed as an in-depth analysis to address the issues surrounding youth unemployment, set within the context of the recent global financial crises and the repercussions of the Arab Spring, both which have contributed to devastating consequences for jobs around the world, particularly affecting young people. The session highlighted the gravity of the situation for young people, presented hard facts and relevant statistics to demonstrate that without careful intervention, we look at facing catastrophic problems in the near future. Mosaic's National Director Jonathan
Freeman commented: "I am thrilled that Mosaic was given the opportunity to bring these critical issue to the 9th WIEF in partnership with the Ashoka Foundation and Youth Business International. “Our joint masterclass was designed to offer an in-depth analysis of some difficult and complex scenarios: how powerful is an apprenticeship framework in tackling youth unemployment? What is the extent of its outreach? How can we do more to bring more jobs to young people? “We championed our Apax-Mosaic Enterprise Challenge programme, which inherently tackles youth unemployment by encouraging entrepreneurship, through raising aspirations and facilitating the development of skills and confidence necessary to achieve those aspirations." Held outside of the Muslim World for the very first time, the 9th WIEF convened in London for 2013. The WIEF aims to promote dialogue and co operation among both Muslim and nonMuslim business men and women, in the belief that collaboration is the salient feature of 21st century international relations. Nizam Uddin, Head of Development and Communications at Mosaic commented: "Business partnerships can become genuine bridges towards peace and prosperity between the Muslim and non-Muslim world. “Mosaic is thrilled to be a part of this 9th WIEF and to share our expertise in using business and entrepreneurship to promote young people's aspirations and build crosscultural bridges, particularly as this year it is hosted in London: one of the leading financial and cultural centres of the world and the business gateway between the Muslim and non-Muslim world."
Two security workers at Birmingham Airport have been jailed for helping illegal immigrants pass through border control. Imtiaz Ahmed and Ghulam Sarwar, both former employees of private contractor ICTS, allowed passengers with forged passports from India, on to flights to Canada. The pair was sentenced to seven years in prison with 45year-old Mr Sarwar receiving a three-year sentence, and Ms Ahmed, 45, receiving four years. Birmingham Crown Court heard how the process would begin with one person, carrying a genuine passport, checking in on a flight, before passing their boarding card to someone holding a fake passport with the same name. The holder of the fake passport would then pass through airport security, with the aid of Ahmed and Sarwar. The National Crime Agency said the UK passport holder

key to the conspiracy. “In bringing them to justice we have dismantled an organised crime network responsible for serious attempts to circumvent airport and airline procedures and smuggle people across international borders.”

“London can lead the world as an Islamic finance hub” This week, more than 1,000 investors from more than 100 countries and 15 global leaders are gathering for the ninth World Islamic Economic Forum. The forum is not in Dubai, Jakarta or Islamabad, however, but in London. For the first time, it is being held in a non-Islamic country – and Britain is honoured to play host. This is an example of the UK’s position as the centre for global finance. And we intend to keep it that way. That is why I have already set out to ensure that the City of London is the home to fastgrowing new markets, from Indian infrastructure funds to offshore Chinese renminbi. Now we have set ourselves this ambition: to be the unrivalled western centre for Islamic finance. This will not only create jobs in Britain, but it will also bring investment. London’s Shard building and the athletes’ village for the 2012 Olympic Games were made possible by Islamic finance. And Islamic investment is continuing to play a vital role in rebuilding UK infrastructure – from the £400m Malaysian investment in Battersea power station, which will regenerate the Nine Elms area of London after decades of decay; to the £1.5bn Dubai investment in the London Gateway, the UK’s first deep-sea container port. Just look at the mathematics. Islamic finance is growing 50 per cent faster than the traditional banking sector, and it has huge growth potential. A quarter of the world’s population is Muslim but only 1 per cent of the
By George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer
world’s financial assets are sharia-compliant. Across the Middle East and north Africa, less t han 20 per cent of adults have a formal bank account. That gap presents a huge economic opportunity for the UK. We are building on existing strengths. London, with $19bn of reported assets, is already a major home to Islamic finance outside the Islamic world. Britain has more sharia-compliant banks than any other western European country. And it has more than a dozen universities or business schools offering executive courses in Islamic finance – including a new programme
for senior executives at the University of Cambridge announced this month. We need to do even more if we want the UK to reap all the benefits of Islamic finance. So we have announced plans to make government schemes such as student loans, start-up loans and the enterprise allowance compatible with Islamic finance rules. But with the World Islamic Economic Forum in town, now is the time for a big and bold step that will cement the UK’s reputation in the Islamic financial world. Today the prime minister will announce that the UK Treasury is working on the practicalities of issuing a bond-
like sukuk worth about £200m. Our ambition is clear: to make Britain the first sovereign to issue an Islamic bond outside the Islamic world. Sukuk bonds do not pay interest but instead entitle investors to a share in the returns generated by an underlying asset, such as property, making them Islamiccompliant. These bonds will support the expansion of Islamic banking in the UK – providing economic benefits to non-Muslims and Muslims alike, including the 2.7m Muslims living in Britain. The government’s Islamic bonds issue will act as a catalyst for corporate institutions to follow suit – further expanding the use of sukuk as an asset class in the global capital markets, and helping to promote more needed overseas investment in Britain’s infrastructure. Britain is at its best when it is open to the rest of the world. So while others in the western world resist change, this government is embracing it – banging the drum for British businesses, seeking out new markets and welcoming overseas investment with open arms. We are prepared to take the big steps our nation requires if it is to succeed in the global race. Whether it is attracting money from China, rejecting damaging protectionism and financial transaction taxes, or issuing the first sovereign Islamic bond in the western world – this government is doing what it takes to open Britain up for business, and for new sources of finance and extra jobs.

Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed: On-the-run terror suspect to claim damages
LEGAL ACTION: Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed who cut off his electric tag and escaped surveillance, has now begun legal action against the government
The tagged suspect who escaped surveillance by dressing in a burka is claiming damages from the Government in a case involving claims of torture. Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed, who vanished from a London mosque on Friday November 1st, has launched a human rights legal challenge involving allegations that Britain was complicit in his torture by the authorities in Somalia. The 27-year-old is the subject of a Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measure but managed to escape surveillance by disguising himself as a woman and slipped out of a mosque. It has been claimed that he has been trained and fought for the al Qaeda-linked Somali group al Shabaab. The manhunt currently includes the Metropolitan Police's counter terrorism command, MI5 and the UK Border Force. The High Court heard how Mohamed was bringing a claim against the Foreign Office, the Home Office, the Ministry of Defence and the Attorney General.
Mohamed and another, referred to as CF, accuse the British authorities of consenting to their arrest by Somaliland authorities in January 2011 and then allowing their detention and torture. Mohamed launched his damages claim under a cloak of anonymity and was referred to in court papers as ‘MA’ but anonymity was lifted following his disappearance. The Home Secretary Theresa May has insisted Mohamed, who is the second terror suspect under a terrorism-prevention measure to go missing, does not pose "a direct threat" to the public. However, it has emerged that Mrs May was mistaken when she claimed in the House of Commons that the police had Mohamed's passport. In a statement today from the chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, the Labour MP Keith Vaz, he discloses that the Home Secretary had written to correct an answer she had given him in which she said: "I do not have his passport but the police do." Mrs May amended her response writing: "I do not have his passport. Mohamed was not in possession of his British passport when he returned to the UK so there was no passport for the police to seize." Mr Vaz said: "I am amazed that Home
Office officials should have briefed the Home Secretary so poorly on such an important issue. When there are only eight people on Tpims they ought to know every detail about them. "It is a worry that there may be other factual errors in the way this matter has been handled and I will seek reassurance about this. “It could well be that Mohamed has another passport and her answer has raised questions about his current whereabouts. We will be raising these questions with Charles Farr when he comes before the Committee next Tuesday.” It is thought Mohamed used a sharp instrument to cut off his tag and was last seen at the An-Noor Masjid and Community Centre in west London. Mohamed and CF were detained in Somaliland on 14th January 2011 and held until their removal back to the UK on 14th March that year. Mohamed alleges the fact the British authorities knew he was about to be arrested in Somaliland was demonstrated by the Home Secretary's decision to apply for a control order against him "as a precaution" prior to his detention. The first control order against him was sanctioned by High Court judge Mr Justice Silber on 13th January 2011.

CBI Chief under fire for rape remark
CHIEF: Ranjit Sinha is the head of the CBI which tackles corruption and high-profile cases
Outraged campaigners demand resignation of the head of India’s Central Bureau of Investigation
Fighting Diabetes in India
There is a growing problem in India and it seems the remedy is not close to being found with scientists baffled by the rising number of diabetics in the country. A host of cures have been tried and tested by diabetes experts in India who are in desperate search of local and costeffective methods to fend off the disease which is rapidly spreading across the nation. India is home to more than 60 million diabetics, a number that the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) estimates will cross 85 million in 2030, or nearly eight per cent of the country’s population today. Doctors told Reuter’s India Insight that in 1975 — when India’s GDP was around $100 billion — only about 1.5 per cent of
its population had diabetes. Today’s percentage is more in line with developed nations such as the United States at 8.3 per cent and France at five per cent. Among the reasons for the rising number of cases is an increasing tendency toward sedentary lifestyles that have accompanied growing economic prosperity, as well as genetic predispositions in a country already known for its sweet tooth. While experts say initiatives such as promoting physical fitness, healthy eating and restricting sales of junk food and cola near schools help prevent diabetes, some doctors in India are hunting for remedies that they think are better suited to that country.

Rights campaigners on Wednesday demanded that the head of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) resign after he said during a panel discussion on sports ethics that "if you can't prevent rape, you enjoy it". Ranjit Sinha, director of the CBI, which tackles corruption and other high-profile cases, apologised for the remark, but it was roundly criticised. The issue of sexual violence has been in the spotlight since the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman on a Delhi bus last year sparked nationwide protests. "Do we have the enforcement?" Sinha said at a CBI conference in New Delhi on Tuesday about whether sports betting should be legalised. "It is very easy to say that if you can't enforce it, it's like saying if you can't prevent rape, you enjoy it." Sinha sought to explain his comments, which civil campaigners and opposition politicians said risked trivialising rape and raised questions over the CBI's ability to investigate serious sexual assault cases. "I regret any hurt caused," Sinha said in a statement after the original remarks dominated news channels. "I gave my opinion that betting should be legalised and that if the laws cannot be enforced, that does not mean that laws should not be made. "This is as erroneous as saying that if rape is inevitable one should lie back and enjoy it. I reiterate my deep sense of regard and respect for women and my commitment for gender issues." Kavita Krishnan, an activist with the All India Progressive Women's Association, called for Sinha to step down. "How can he remain the head of India's premier investigation agency?" she said. Nirmala Sitharaman, spokeswoman for the main opposition group, the Bharatiya Janata Party, called the remarks "shocking". "Wonder if his colleagues in the Bureau, his family and well-wishers approve of his view," she wrote on Twitter. There were more than 24,000 reported rapes in India in 2011, but activists say the real number is many times higher. Following a public outcry over the Delhi attack, India introduced tougher rape laws in March, which include the death penalty for repeat offenders and for those whose victims are left in a "vegetative state". The row comes at a bad time for the CBI, widely accused of acting as a tool for the government to pressure political rivals. Its very legality is also being challenged in court. The CBI, which is similar to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States, was set up to fight corruption by government employees, but also investigates other important cases, including murder, rape and terrorism.
China relax one-child policy China’s controversial policy, which restricts families across the country to just one child each, is set to be relaxed in the coming months. New plans, to allow parents who were an only child to have two children, will be introduced in the country according to state media agency, Xinhua. The initiative came following a weekly meet of the Communist party, with leaders believed to be willing to budge on the previously strict rules. Other reforms include the abolition of
BABIES: Chinese parents will be allowed two babies if they comply with new state laws
‘re-education through labour’ camps and moves to boost the role of the private sector in the economy. Though the scale of the Chinese leadership's new social and economic reforms are vast, affecting millions across China, none of these changes should come as a shock. Many have been discussed in the Chinese state media in the past, and many have already been test-driven on smaller scales in different parts across the country. For example, in some Chinese cities for
the past few years, couples who are both single children have been allowed the option of having a second child. This latest change will allow couples, whereby only one partner is a single child, to have two children. Similarly, Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to abolish the much-hated "reeducation through labour" system when he came to power earlier this year. Quietly, officials have been winding down the system over the past few months.

Mid-air crisis
A plane full of Air India passengers was given a midair scare last week after a door on the plane was not closed properly. The flight from Jeddah to Mumbai, took off on Friday 15th November as normal yet just minutes into the journey, a cockpit panel showed that one of the doors was not properly locked. The Boeing 747 – AI 964 – was immediately flown back to the Saudi Arabian city’s airport whereby the problem was fixed before the 400 passengers and 12 crew
members were allowed to board once more. After a two hour delay, the Air India flight finally took off once again and landed safely in Mumbai with no further incident. Sources close to the airline said as soon as it took off from Jeddah, the cockpit panel showed that door was not properly locked, prompting the pilot to fly back. These incidents are extremely rare and an Air India spokesman strongly denied any claim that the door was open mid-air.

Maldives begin search for new President
Maldives President Mohamed Waheed stepped down on Friday 15th November as the country begins preparations to host the second round of their presidential elections. In a farewell speech, Waheed reiterated his tenure’s main priority was to enhance the country’s foreign relations, adding that the long standing, non-aligned, independent foreign policy with an Islamic character was changed by the then (Nasheed) government. “Because of this, in global currents, the country's own say was weakened by manifolds. The country was under a position where it could be forced, by changing the Constitution, to do things
that its legal framework didn't allow. The government and senior leadership were being asked to resign within few hours, to flout the orders of court, and to stand against those orders,” the outgoing Waheed said. Waheed continued by saying that his government ‘refused to bow down to foreign pressure’, and instead upheld the legal framework and the orders of the constitutional institutions of the country. The second round of the Presidential Election will take place on Saturday 16th November with the Maldives Democratic Party candidate and former president Mohamed Nasheed being the frontrunner.
Did life begin down under?
Life on earth is one of the most contested arguments that has ever been conceived yet scientists in Australia now believe they may have found proof of life stretching back 3.5billion years. Deep within a remote, hot, dry patch of northwestern Australia a new formation has been discovered which could ‘rewrite history’. Scientists estimate the planet formed roughly 4.5 billion years ago; minerals known as zircons,
indicating water, and continents existed within 100 million and 200 million years after that on what was still a scalding planet. The existence of water suggests that life was possible. But what did it look like, and when did it start? The discovery from the Dresser Formation, a much examined outcrop of rocks in Western Australia's Pilbara region, documented in a paper published online this week in the Astrobiology journal may help answer those questions. ian As It centers on something called microbially induced Asian sedimentary structures, commonly shortened to the acronym MISS. A man has shot and killed three musicians before committing suicide because he was distraught at being told to leave a band, police have said. Iranian Ali Akbar Mahammadi Rafie murdered three fellow countrymen in Brooklyn, New York, on Monday apparently after becoming depressed at no longer being part of the Free Keys. Two of the victims Arash Farazmand, 28, and Soroush Farazmand, 27, were brothers and played in a different band, Yellow Dogs. Drummer Arash and another artist Ali Eskandarian, 35, were killed on the same floor of an apartment, while guitarist Soroush was shot while in bed on a different floor. Ali Eskandarian, shot
Musician Ali Eskandarian was also killed. Yellow Dogs’ manager Ali Salehezadeh said Rafie, 29, had not communicated with the victims for a few months because of a minor dispute. He said: ‘There was a decision not to be around each other. ‘They were never that close to begin with. We thought it was all behind us.’ The killer, who had accessed the flat after lowering himself from a roof, was only stopped when a member of the band he had been kicked out of tried to wrestle his rifle away. The scuffle resulted in a neighbour being shot in the arm. Rafie then made his way back to the roof where he took his own life with a gunshot to the head. The injured neighbour is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

It was the first time a wild saola had been spotted since one was captured on camera in 1999 in Laos. Dang Dinh Nguyen, Deputy Head of Quang Nam Forest Protection Department, said the last sighting of a saola in Vietnam was in 1998. He said the latest appearance of the animal was ‘an historic moment’ and showed that conservation efforts in the critical saola habitat were effective. Conservationists believe there could be only a few dozen surviving in the wild, with best-case estimates ranging to several hundred. In the area where the saola was sighted, the WWF runs a law enforcement program which recruits forest guards from the local community to prevent illegal hunting. Since 2011, the forest guards have removed 30,000 snares and destroyed more than 600 illegal hunters' camps. “Confirmation of the presence of the saola in this area is a testament to the dedicated and tireless efforts of these forest guards,” said Thinh. When it was found two decades ago the saola was "the first large mammal new to science in more than 50 years and one of the most spectacular species discoveries of the 20th century,” WWF said.

The critically endangered twin-horned saola has been sighted in Vietnam for the first time in over a decade, raising hopes of recovery for the mysterious animal, conservationists said on Wednesday 13th November. Known as the ‘Asian Unicorn’ for its extreme elusiveness, the antelope-like creature was spotted in September using a camera trap set by the WWF and the communist country's government in Vietnam's central Annamite mountains. “When our team first looked at the photos we couldn’t believe our eyes. Saola are the holy grail for South East Asian conservationists so there was a lot of excitement," said Van Ngoc Thinh, WWF Vietnam’s country director. “This is a breathtaking discovery and renews hope for the recovery of the species,” he said in a statement. Saola, which were only discovered in 1992, have two parallel horns with sharp ends, which can reach 50 centimeters in length (20 inches). One of the secretive creatures was seen in August 2010 - the first sighting in a decade - but it died a few days after it was captured by villagers in Laos, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

With Young Archie’s record label ‘Boiler Room Records’, Usman was catapulted unto the audiences with a fresh take on Noor Jahan’s ‘Jadon Holi Jai’ early this year. Then Rishi Rich’s magic worked beautifully on the track in making Usman’s debut one not to be forgotten. Now after the huge success of his protege - Usman Rehman, Young Archie is now back as a full-fledged music producer with his comeback single, ‘Dil Lutiya’. The track itself is an up-beat tempo in Punjabi/Tapoori style, accompanied by the hard hitting 808 drum that will only make your
body tremble. It’s a guaranteed dancefloor and party smash this season. It is of course, helped by the cheeky contemporary and unique style vocals of Usman Rehman. So with ‘Jadon Holi Jai’ and ‘Majajan’ already having made a massive mark on the Asian industry in 2013, fans and new listeners alike can look forward to more of the mesmerising vocals of Usman Rehman. ‘Dil Lutiya’ is out on Thursday November 21st.

Sitting in the Asian Express offices with the Editor, Young Archie is an abundance of stories about the Asian music scene. Being part of a group ‘The Young Archie Assignment’, which was nominated for Best Newcomer at UK Asian Music Awards taught him some valuable lessons about making music and led to his decision to set up his own music label. He has been drawing inspiration from all parts of a broad musical spectrum, including the likes of Swedish House Mafia, Quincy Jones and Ryan Leslie, all the way through to British Asian
producer - Rishi Rich, Young Archie is diverse, exciting and different. “Luckily I had the support of my family to experiment with what I wanted to do with my life, even when we weren’t making any serious money with The Young Archie Assignment. “It took me a few years to realise what I was all about. “I knew I was onto a winner when I met Usman, as I could experiment with different sounds to his smooth vocals. “Now, I’m really passionate about experimenting with different sounds to output great tracks. “I’m a self-taught man with no official musical training, and to have had the response from the audiences is very encouraging. All I can say is… ‘watch out for more…’”

Smoochy, smoochy… Dj Surinder Rattan is ok…? Kareena Kapoor opens up about Saif getting intimate on screen with other actresses!
Even before the lovely duo of Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan decided to tie the knot, they had decided not get intimate with other people on the big screen. But, post marriage, Kareena has rubbished all such claims, saying that she doesn’t mind Saif getting intimate with other women onscreen, because their profession requires such things. Talking to the media persons, Kareena Kapoor said that she doesn’t feel insecure about her husband Saif Ali Khan getting intimate with other actresses in movies. Bebo says that it’s their profession, so it has nothing to do with her personal life. “We do not feel insecure. This is my professional life and my personal life has got nothing to do with [my professional life] at all. They are two separate areas of my life. There is no insecurity that I feel [when Saif is getting intimate with any heroine]. He is an actor and that is his job,” Kareena said. Kareena even went on to say that Saif shouldn’t hesitate in doing intimate scenes if the scripts requires him to do it. “If it is a romantic song he should look like a romantic hero,” she said. A while ago, Bebo also said that she’s free to do kissing scenes in the movies, even after marriage, and there’s no kissing rule as such between the two.

The song has a raw Punjabi feel to it and Miss Pooja’s contribution to the track has enhanced the track all the more. I am very excited to hear the reaction of the listeners when the track releases on the 7th of November.” On the latest track collaboration, Surj from RDB said: “We are so excited and thrilled about the release of Dho Guttan. It has such an authentic vibe to it and Jind, Binder [Paaji] and Pooja have done a fantastic job. version of 'Gabru' by Yo Yo Honey Singh which features controversial references to Imran Khan's 'Satisfya' reminding us of the internet 'beef' earlier this year! Rajeev says:"I've had so many people approach me and give me positive messages both from the industry and general public alike! I decided another album had to happen. I created so many tracks that they wouldn't fit on the album so I've shifted a couple to Chapter 3 which will be out in Feb next year!" Rajeev is relishing on the success and bookings that Chapter 1 is still bringing in. With one of the big tracks on the previous mix-tape, 'Patandra' being featured in a Brit-Bollywood film releasing this Christmas called 'Born to be King', 2014 is
going to be one to remember for the young music maker. Rajeev is part of the high profile collective 'Kudos Music' and is a master in the art of the mix-tape. Chapter 1 of the series became the 'official free giveaway' at this years Bhangra Showdown at the Hammersmith Apollo with over 2000 copies of the album being distributed on the night. Rajeev has his sights set on doing the same next year. In a message for his supporters, Rajeev said: "I just want to give a massive thank you to all my family, friends, supporters and well wishers from all over the globe who took the time to listen to my work. It's really been overwhelming to know so many people have so many stories to tell about Chapter 1. Whether it be a Facebook message, a tweet, email, phone call or anything, just hearing that people all over were listening to my mixtape whilst partying, exercising, driving or even working was worth all the hardwork. I really hope everyone likes Chapter 2 and please continue giving me your feedback. Afterall, the music is for you!"

Double whammy! Mercedes to showcase two of their AMG models in Toyko and Los Angeles By Tanya Shah tanya@asianexpress.co.uk
Two motor shows, two new AMG high-performance vehicles. Mercedes-AMG is presenting the S 65 AMG and the SLS AMG GT Final Edition simultaneously at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the Tokyo Motor Show (both from 20th November to 1st December 2013). Mercedes say that the two new AMG high-performance vehicles represent the spectacular next level for their exciting model array. The S 65 AMG stands for BEAUTIES: Two of the most eyecatching cars on show – the S 65 AMG and SLS AMG GT Final Edition
maximum exclusiveness and is armed with an unparalleled and dynamic beast of a V12 engine. Twelve cylinders, bi-turbo charging, an output of 630 hp and torque of 1000 Nm – the new Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG sets new standards in the motoring world. This means that the S 65 AMG would outperform all other models in its segment, with an acceleration speed from 0 to 62 mph coming in at 4.3 seconds, and a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited). With fuel consumption of 23.7 mpg (NEDC combined), the new S 65 AMG is the world's most
fuel-efficient V12 highperformance saloon in terms of power and torque. The rangetopping 12-cylinder model already meets the requirements of the EU6 emissions standard, which is not due to come into force until 2015. Like the S 63 AMG, the S 65 AMG features a lithium-ion battery, resulting in a weight saving of over 20 kilograms. It comes with ceramic brakes, head-up display, aerodynamic elements and is simply loaded with luxury and style, the S 65 AMG comes with new technology – ‘Magic Body Control’. This clever system involves a stereo
camera, which scans the road surface ahead for surface undulations, and adjusts the suspension in advance. With the SLS AMG GT Final Edition, Mercedes are showing an ultimate, particularly attractive variant of our super sports car, which marks an impressive era to an end. The model, built in a limited run of just 350 units, represents the last opportunity for customers to order a SLS AMG – while at the same time reflecting the unrivalled success story and unique scope offered by the first complete vehicle to be built by Mercedes-AMG.
The super sports car, with its 591 hp AMG 6.3-litre V8 frontmid engine, offers an exciting combination of truly exceptional design and equipment features. Ever since it was presented in 2009 the SLS AMG has been an icon of the Mercedes-Benz brand and is highly sought-after around the world. Thanks to the wide variety of models – from a gullwing model to the roadster, GT, the Black Series, an electric drive and its success in motorsport as the GT3 variant – the SLS AMG has become ever more attractive and is now one of the legendary dream cars from the brand with the star.

Electrifying BMW’s i3 gets its first award even before it goes on sale
The BMW i3 has collected its first accolade in the UK even before it goes on sale later this month in the ‘Electric and Hybrid Car’ category in a ‘Top 100 Car list’. Lauded for its holistic approach to electric car ownership and genuine appeal, not just to those looking for an electric car, the BMW i3 trumps the competition in this new but highly competitive category.
The new BMW i3 is the first model to launch within the BMW i range. Two BMW i cars are confirmed for production, the fully-electric BMW i3 megacity vehicle and the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car. The BMW i3 is BMW’s first fullyelectric production car and is due to go on sale in the UK later this month, priced from £25,680. Meanwhile, the BMW i8 will go on sale in the UK in 2014 priced at
£99,845. Like the i8, the BMW i3 features an allaluminium chassis combined with a passenger cell made entirely from carbonfibre-reinforced plastic. As well as the vehicles themselves, BMW i will encompass a range of premium services for mobility aimed at optimising the use of parking spaces, charging infrastructure, ‘smart’ navigation systems, intermodal route planning and access to other BMW vehicles on an ‘on-demand’ basis. BMW is the first premium vehicle manufacturer to offer such a comprehensive ownership package surrounding electric mobility.

Albion Sports
Sights set high for Yorkshire football club By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Albion Sports are fast becoming one of the top teams in the Bradford district and their latest nomination at the Asian Football Awards is just a small sign of the club’s prosperous future. Established in 1974, the side began life in the Bradford Amateur Sunday League, yet after more than three decades of success, in 2007, the side resigned from Sunday league football to focus on climbing the official Football Association pyramid. With six Sunday Premier League titles, and more than ten cup wins, it was decided that the time to compete at a higher level had arrived and thus began life in the Saturday format. In 2008, the West Yorkshire outfit were elected to compete in the West Riding County Amateur Football League and made an instant impact, successfully gaining promotion to the top tier in their first season, alongside winning the District Cup. Triumphs continued to occur as Albion Sports went on to finish runners-up in their first two seasons of top flight football, and at the start of the 2011/12 season, the side finally progressed to the official ninth tier of English football – the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL). Competing in the First Division, Albion Sports were unlucky to miss out on promotion in their inaugural campaign, finishing just one point off the promotion places. This near miss was soon rectified
Sport
the following year (2012/13 campaign) as Albion Sports cruised to the league title with games to spare, boasting the most lethal attack and defence in the division. Chairman, Kultar Singh, has been involved with the club for a number of years and as recently as last season, was still sat on the dugout every week in his assistant manager role. Mr Singh has ambitious plans for the side that currently compete at Farsley AFC’s Throstle Nest ground and has his sights set on England’s fifth tier as a realistic target. “I truly believe we can continue progressing as a club and even reach the heights of Conference (Skrill Premier Division) football,” he said. “A lot will be dependent on acquiring a Ground and we are currently very active in exploring various options for a new Home Stadium.” Gerry Sutcliffe, MP for Bradford South and UK Minister for Sport
between 2007 and 2010, also added his plaudits to the club’s meteoric rise. Speaking after the club were awarded the title of West Yorkshire Development Club of the Year, he said: “Albion Sports are a fantastic sporting and community success story. “It’s a club that is rooted in the local community, run by committed and dedicated volunteers. It fully deserves the recognition it has received from the FA, as a Charter Standard Community Club and as West Yorkshire Development Club of the Year.” Albion Sports are currently competing in their first NCEL top flight season and sit in tenth position, just three points off fourth spot, with three games in hand. Leeds’ top five-aside team return to clinch Stoke title By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Bacca FC may not be a household name exactly, yet their rise to dominance in national five-aside tournaments has certainly helped establish them as one of the top teams in the country. Made up of only Asian footballers, the Leeds-based outfit have travelled all over the nation to compete in competitions and their latest success in Stoke was the perfect warm-up for the big Wembley appearance next month. Competing in a charity tournament, organised by the Stoke Community Sports Club, Bacca overcame 34 other teams to clinch the top spot and walk away with the cash award. £1,000 was granted to the winners, with the Bacca players donating £200 of that back to the cause; the construction of the Gillani-Noor Masjid in Longton, Stoke. Club captain, Ismail Malik, said he was thrilled to clinch the prize yet stressed the importance of also giving back in society. “We are obviously delighted to have won this tournament just a month before we go to Wembley for the FA Fives National Finals,” he said. “As soon as we heard about the tournament we knew we had to be there and the fact there was a £1,000 prize for the winner was a big bonus. “The organisers were extremely thankful for us donating £200 to the construction of the local Masjid, and it has to be said that this tournament was one of the best we have competed in anywhere in England.” The West Yorkshire outfit currently competes in the local Beeston futsal league and earlier this year qualified for the national finals after success in the regional heats. Ismail Malik said the side has always been proud of their backgrounds and hopes the team’s success will continue for the foreseeable future. “Every time we play we are always proud to represent not only the Asian community but also the Leeds community,” he said. “It is something we love doing and showing that Asian footballers are just as good as anybody when it comes to five-aside.” Bacca FC will next compete at Wembley on the 14th December where they will be hoping to improve on their last finals outing and win the nationwide tournament.

India and England win World Cup bids
VENUE: India will play on home soil for the 2018 men’s tournament
For the second time in a span of eight years, India will play host to hockey’s most prestigious tournament after it was announced that the 2018 men’s World Cup will be staged in the country. Following on from the success of the 2010 edition in the South Asian nation, 16 teams will compete, with Australia’s men hoping to clinch the title once again on Indian soil. The 2018 women's World Cup will be held in England and is scheduled to run between the 7th and 21st July, with the men's occurring between the 1st and 16th
December. India last hosted the World Cup in New Delhi in 2010 while the next edition will be held next year in The Hague, Netherlands in the first two weeks of June. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) issued a statement last week to congratulate India on once again gaining the right to host the games. It read: “The International Hockey Federation (FIH) is delighted to announce that England and India will host the Hockey World Cups in 2018. England Hockey was successful in their bid to host the women's showpiece, with Hockey India winning the race to host the men's equivalent.” The announcements were made by FIH president Leandro Negre at a special ceremony in Lausanne, Switzerland. “I wish to offer my sincere congratulations to England Hockey and Hockey India on their successful bids to host the Hockey World Cups 2018,” Mr Negre added. “The quality of both bids was truly extraordinary, and the FIH is looking forward to bringing its top properties to England and India. The standard was exceptionally high, making the decision extremely hard for the FIH Executive Board.”

Goodbye Sachin Little Master bows out after 200th Test Back page story continued A somewhat disappointing stand of just ten runs had seen the Little Master bowled out in the previous innings against the West Indies yet he rolled back the clock in his final outing to score a credible 74 runs. Smashing 12 fours from 118 deliveries, the 40-year-old looked vibrant with the bat and whispers of a 52nd Test century were becoming more and more prominent as the match unfolded. However, it seemed West Indies bowler, Narsingh Deonarine, and Captain Darren Sammy had not been given the same script. A Deonarine delivery was masterful caught by Darren Sammy at slip, and within a second the curtain came down on the legend’s 24year career. The sold-out crowd was silenced, whilst a subdued Sammy refused to celebrate the final dismissal of one of cricket’s greatest batsmen. As Tendulkar made his final walk off the pitch, the crowd once again mustered up an emotional ovation. With every record worth holding already in the sporting icons pocket, he will leave the game knowing that very few people will ever come close to matching his statistics. Not only is he the leading runscorer in the history of Tests, with 15,921 runs in his 200 matches, but he also boasts the most runs in the history of one-day internationals, with 18,246 runs in an amazing 463 ODIs. Blessed with the keenest of cricket minds, Tendulkar made his
international debut in 1989, aged just 16, in a Test with Pakistan. Just one year later, in his 14th innings, he registered his first Test century against England at Old Trafford. Some of his finest and most memorable performances came against Australia, the overwhelmingly dominant team of his era. His century as a 19-year-old on a lightning-fast pitch at the WACA is considered one of the best innings ever to have been played in the cricket-mad country. A few years later he received the ultimate compliment from the ultimate batsman: Don Bradman (holder of the highest batting average ever at 99.94 runs) who confided to his wife that Tendulkar reminded him of himself. In 2000 he became the first batsman to register 50 international hundreds and eight years later in 2008 he passed Brian Lara as the leading Test run-score. Most recently, last year, when just one month short of his 39th birthday, Tendulkar became the first player to score 100 international centuries, which like Bradman's batting average, could be a mark that lasts forever. Speaking about his career, the cricketing ace explained that it all seems like a ‘dream’. “It's hard to imagine a life without playing cricket because it's all I've ever done since I was 11,” he said. “All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India. I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years.”
LEGEND: Tendulkar makes his way to the crease for his final innings
Tendulkar holds just about every batting record worth owning in the game, including those for most runs and hundreds in Tests and ODIs, as well as most international runs.

No one has served Indian cricket as Sachin has. “He has truly been an ambassador for India and Indian cricket. He has been an inspiration for generations of sportsmen, not just cricketers. “We respect his decision to retire, although many of us can't imagine an Indian team without Sachin.”
Qatar WILL host World Cup
In one of the most drawn out sagas of modern football, the 2022 Qatar World Cup has once again been propelled into the news after a FIFA source reportedly leaked information regarding the host nation. The unnamed source was speaking after Ethic Investigator Michael Garcia was brought in to investigate the bidding for both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. He now claims that even if Mr Garcia believes there was an issue with the voting that nothing can actually be done to take the tournament away. The FIFA source said: “If Garcia finds something which was wrong, the ethics committee has the right to take sanctions. “But does he have the right to say 'based on what I have found the World Cup should not be played in Qatar?' No, he does not have that right.” Only FIFA's executive committee, the 25-strong board headed by FIFA president Sepp Blatter which originally chose Russia and Qatar to host the 2018 and 2022 tournaments respectively, can make such a decision. FIFA's auditor Domenico Scala raised the question of

Little Master bows out after 200th Test It may not have been the fairytale ending everybody was hoping for but Sachin Tendlukar’s illustrious career finally came to an end earlier this week in front of a 32,000 strong crowd in Mumbai. Playing in his recordbreaking 200th Test match, Tendulkar was welcomed to the crease by a guard of honour from players and officials whilst the chant ‘Sachin, Sachin’ echoed Wankhede around Stadium.
