Armed police shutdown one of Knaresborough’s busiest high streets and locked pupils in school last week as a vicious ‘hoax call’ caused chaos in the North Yorkshire town. On Wednesday 16th October, Police received a phone call

stating there was an “immediate threat to members of the public” at the Paragon pizza takeaway. Dozens of officers, armed with submachine guns and baton round launchers arrived at the scene to detain three staff members outside the establishment, whilst a fourth was handcuffed moments later. However, after a search of the

individuals and the premises, the report was labeled a ‘cruel prank’ which had been targeted at the innocent staff. Now, the Paragon employees have told the Asian Express about the horrendous ordeal they were put through, despite not doing anything wrong.

A Leeds-based school took a trip back in time earlier this week as the 1940s arrived in the city. Army generals, Morse code and even a tea dance were all found at the Co-operative Academy of

Leeds on Wednesday 23rd October where learning really did come to life. As part of the ‘hands-on’ learning approach, students took part in activities throughout the day to learn, first-hand, about the Second World War. Special guests also included experts in the fields of food rationing during war times as well as fashion, and a holocaust survivor. Dr Martin Kapel, of the Holocaust Survivors Friendship Association, spoke to the students about his own experience as a Jewish child in Germany, and the moment he was taken from his bed in the night by the Nazis and herded onto a train with his family. A group of Year 11 citizenship students held a session on racism during war times with younger pupils at the academy. Academy Principal, Eileen McCarthy, explained how the proactive approach to learning which has been adopted at the Academy not only boosts attendance but also morale of all students and staff. She said: “We believe very

much in experiential learning and not just looking at text books. “We do theme days throughout the year and this happens to be one based around World War Two which everybody has really taken to and joined in the spirit of. There is an educational element to every single aspect of what we are doing today. It is learning about the past but is also problem solving and mathematical theory at the same time.” Ms McCarthy added: “By doing days like this we ensure every student gets a fair chance at learning; for example many of our students come to us and may not have ever been to school before. “Some have come from war torn areas of Africa and are very keen to learn but you have to remember this is first time they have been in our learning environment and for some, they are still learning English – we have 77 spoken languages here. “Our challenge is to ensure everybody reaches the national standard and hopefully by doing days like this we will be able to achieve that.” The Leeds-based establishment, formerly Primrose High School, has excelled since becoming an academy and last year achieved record GCSE results. Ms McCarthy added: “We are a relatively new academy and are due our first Ofsted at any time up to July bu I don’t believe we have anything to worry about. “In the summer, we had the best results ever for the academy and the predecessor school as well with all English and Maths grades up from previous years.” LEADER: Co-operative of Leeds principal, Eileen McCarthy

The Prime Minister praised Britain’s Muslim communities and announced new measures to help Muslim students and entrepreneurs at his annual Eid alAdha reception. Speaking at Downing Street on Monday October 21st, the Prime

Minister announced new proposals on extending availability of Start Up and student loans to make them consistent with Islamic financial principles. The Prime Minister made the announcement to members of the Muslim community as they celebrated the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha at Downing Street. They were joined by senior Government ministers, including

Baroness Warsi, Imams, community and business leaders, charities and public servants from across the diverse range of Muslim communities in the UK. The proposals will benefit aspiring Muslim entrepreneurs and students who may be deterred from starting their own business or entering higher education due to their religious financial beliefs. Speaking at the reception the Prime Minister said: “I want Britain to be one of the world's centres of Islamic finance - from the highest and mightiest financial institutions all the way to start ups. “We’ve got tens of thousands of young people starting their own businesses and tonight I can announce that we will make sure that there is a type of start up loan that is totally consistent with all the principles of Islamic finance. “We must do that for start up loans, we must do that for students loans and we must do it for the enterprise allowance. That's what a welcoming, tolerant, multi-racial country does." Sea Cadets from across Yorkshire united last weekend to commemorate Trafalgar Day in style as hundreds took to the streets to mark the annual event. 200 cadets from West Yorkshire’s eight units marched through the city of Bradford on Sunday 20th October in honour of Admiral Lord Nelson’s historic victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Coinciding with this year’s celebrations was the Bradford Sea Cadets 75th anniversary. With the march initially organised to take place in Keighley, the troops passed the honour of staging the event to their near neighbours to fittingly mark both occasions. Cadets from Bradford, Leeds, Huddersfield, Wakefield, Dewsbury, Castleford, South Elmsall and Keighley were all in attendance whilst the Bradford Air Cadets’ band led the demonstration. Bodies gathered in Centenary Square at around midday where the cadets were then inspected by the representing bodies; the High Sheriff of West Yorkshire, Virginia Lloyd, Deputy Lieutenant for West Yorkshire, Major Stan Hardy, and Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Khadim Hussain. From there, the troops were led along Market Street, towards the cathedral where Bradford Sea Cadets chaplain, John Howard, gave his speech. After the cathedral service, the cadets then

paraded back to Centenary Square to march past dignitaries, before attending a reception at the Bradford Sea Cadets headquarters TS Aurora, which was named after the troop ship adopted by the citizens of Bradford during the Second World War. The parade marks the end of Bradford Sea Cadet’s 75th anniversary year, which began with it being named as national Evelyn Cleverly Award winners, beating 400 units from across the country. The Lord Mayor said: “It was a real honour to welcome Sea Cadets from across West Yorkshire to Bradford to commemorate this famous battle, especially as it coincides with the 75th year of Sea Cadets in Bradford.” Chairman of the Bradford Sea Cadets, Sandra Howard, said she was proud to see so many people turn out for the annual event and was thankful for everybody who was involved. “It was a fantastic day and even the bad weather stayed away which was always a bonus,” she explained. “To see everybody come together for a march like this was amazing and was actually quite moving to witness. There were so many people here that it makes you realise how big the sea cadets really are.” The Lord Mayor’s Cadet LC Ummar Younis and the West Yorkshire Lord Lieutenant’s Sea Cadet POC Lorna Zurek, both from Bradford, both took part in the parade.

Hundreds of jobs created in Denholme Local businessman brings prosperity back to Bradford By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

With the recession forcing many businesses into closure and preventing some start-up businesses from ever taking off, a Bradford-based businessman is playing his part in helping to rejuvenate his local area. Property tycoon, Nirmal Singh has faced the difficult times head-on and his recent purchase of a disused, abandoned site in Denholme has already brought prosperity back to the Bradford town. Mr Singh and his family completed the 16 acre development, which has already brought 100 jobs to the area, with the potential for a further 200 in the future as the site aims to restore its efficiency back to its heyday. Formally owned by the Whitaker manufacturing sector, and used solely as their premises, Mr Singh decided to break up the mass space into a multitude of separate commercial units including retail, commercial, manufacturing, industrial and storage space. This decision has proved successful for the property developer who has now become the major employer for providing facilities in Denholme. Mr Singh said he was ‘proud’ to have been able to bring the site back into use and help create job opportunities in a ACQUIRED: Nirmal Singh at the Denholme site

place which had been potentially forgotten about. The acquisition of the site has also seen the major political parties come together to praise the project. Supported by the Bradford council and leader of the Conservative party, Glenn Miller, as well as the leader of the Labour party, David Green, the renovations have become a cross-party issue, whereby both groups support the site. Mr Singh now has plans to turn the site into an energy efficient ‘green site’, by developing his own wind farm meaning electricity can be produced on-site making it cheaper for tenants and more environmentally friendly. The Distribution Network Operator (DNO) have confirmed that if the grid allows it, they will also allow for a solar farm to be created and this will help generate one megawatt of potential energy which could be supplied and sold back into the grid to provide green energy back into Denholme.

Takeaway targeted by malicious hoax call Innocent staff detained by police in major operation Razaul Karim, owner and manager of the eatery, was the third member to be detained by police after arriving late to work and explained how shocked he was to find what was going on at the establishment. He said: “I was on my way in and was later than usual so tried ringing the takeaway but there was no answer. That made me a little worried to be honest because we always open at five so I tried the staff mobiles and again no answer. I had no idea what was happening. “When I pulled into Knaresborough the High street had been cordoned off and before I knew it there were armed officers pointing their guns at me shouting, ‘keep your hand on the wheel’. “They handcuffed me in my car and told me my business was being searched because they had reports saying we had ‘ammunition’ and ‘gun powder’ on our premises. I was terrified.” Following Mr Karim’s arrest, he was taken to the police station and questioned in the car for over two hours before a ‘horrible’ body search was conducted.

At approximately 8.30pm police released a statement saying the incident was a result of a hoax telephone call but Mr Karim said ‘the damage had already been done by then’. “We were told we can go after that but I was still in shock,” he continued. “I am still struggling with mental anxiety when I’m at home because you just don’t expect something like that to happen to you. “If it wasn’t for the fantastic support of the local people, we could have really struggled over the last week. Fortunately the public’s response has been fantastic; we got a host of cards through and on Saturday night we completely sold out of food we were that busy.” Clare Hamberg is one of Paragon’s ‘loyal’ customers and explained how she could not believe the news as it was reported. “I first heard about it when my son told me his friends had to stay in school because the police had closed the street,” she said. “When I was told it was the Paragon guys I knew the police were wrong.” North Yorkshire Police Police

Symbolic poppies for every religion

A group of Sikhs from Leeds are hoping to raise awareness of a special poppy appeal in build up to this year’s Remembrance Day. The poppy is the national symbol used to commemorate the efforts of all the soldiers who died in battle during the First and Second World Wars. Since 1922, the paper replicates have been created for the public to purchase and raise money for the Royal British Legion and now the fundraising campaign has been expanded. Wooden stakes, with poppies attached, have been used in the past to place in the ground, and the latest initiative involves stakes in a range of designs, created to commemorate different religions. A wooden cross (Christianity), crescent (Islam), star (Judaism) and Sikh Khanda are all available for purchase from the Royal British Legion and offer different faiths the chance to pay respect to fallen soldiers from their respected religions. Leeds-resident, Byara Singh has brought hundreds of the Sikh Khanda poppies to the Yorkshire city with collections taking place at local Gurdwaras. More than 83,000 Sikhs were killed in the First and Second World Wars, whilst over 100,000 were injured in battle as they stood alongside British troops. Mr Singh explained how important the campaign was in recognising the significant contribution of the Sikh community in the two wars. He said: “Sikhs were involved a lot in the First World War and thousands upon thousands died in battle. “This campaign helps bring attention to their contribution and allows us all to pay respect to different communities whose war efforts were very substantial.” This will be the third year that the Sikh Khandas are available and their prominence is growing every year. The idea for the Sikh Khanda Poppy Project came from a Derbybased teacher who, after a visit to the National Memorial Arboretum noticed that there were special poppy holders to commemorate other religions but not one for the Sikh community. This led Kalwinder Singh Dhindsa, and his cousin Jaz Rai, to design the Sikh Khanda holder which is now produced in the thousands by the Royal British Legion’s poppy factory.

Mr Dhindsa spoke of why the project is so important. “I felt it needed to be made because I want more young Sikhs and the public to be aware of the great contributions the Sikhs made during both world wars in helping the allies fight the Nazis and fascists,” he said. “We just did not want these names to be forgotten and for nobody to put poppies down next to their names just because a particular poppy was not available. “I feel that a better understanding of the role of Sikhs and their contribution during the wars might also educate those that see the turban and the beard as a threat.” APPEAL: (l-r) Rehal Balvir Singh, Byara Singh and Surjeet Singh Puee

DJ Taz is a blast from the past. Returning from a long break, ‘the girl with the bling, who also likes to sing’ was back to energise the youth as part of the on-going Role model series. As well as being a presenter for radio Asian Fever she is also a renowned rapper and the young people at the Hamara centre were lucky enough to have her around for inspiration. Taz has been a presenter for radio Asian Fever for the last 6 years. To begin with the music enthusiast shared her experiences and thoughts with the group. “Having been thrown into the deep end I made so many mistakes but that helped me learn and be a better presenter,” she said. She continued to explain University life and even gave the talk in her own unique style: “I was at uni, I was presenting, I was playing music, I was loud in the air, it was crazy but it was absolutely awesome at the same time.”

Huddersfield lights switch on

The festive season officially begins in Huddersfield next month with the Christmas Lights Switch On, set to take place on Saturday the 16th November. Bradford Bulls’ Heritage Team will visit four libraries across the Bradford district next week as part of a national scheme that aims to encourage more people to read a book. The Team will deliver special reading and story-telling sessions during the half-term break in support of the Try Reading campaign. Listers Lantern Communities unite to light up Bradford sky After months of hard work from community groups across Bradford, Lister Park was lit up last weekend in a spectacular lantern parade. Despite the downpour of rain, spirits remained high as hundreds gathered on Saturday 18th October to witness the illuminations, lead by a giant 15 metre light-up snake. Children from across a host of Bradford schools, as well as

representatives from local churches and youth groups, had been involved with the creation of the lanterns with old and young uniting to show off the final product. The brainchild of Stephen Bykar and Judie Connor, the original concept was conceived to bring the community together and with backing from the Near Neighbours initiative and 2:28, the final event proved a massive

success. Dozens of lanterns, including a phoenix model with a wingspan of over six metres, marched through the park on Saturday whilst specially crafted lanterns, containing children’s wishes, were sent down stream in a boating lake alongside floating lily lanterns. Meanwhile, carnival music, skeleton stilt-walkers and fire jugglers, entertained the crowds who braved the weather. Katie Jones, one of the Community Artists behind the event was delighted with the day and explained how impressed she was with the final project. She said: “This event is about bringing people together from across Bradford’s diverse community to celebrate our shared creativity, the beauty and symbolism of light, and to be enchanted in Lister Park. “To have all the schools involved was fantastic and really showed how everybody can come together. The only thing that threatened to stop us was the rain and despite a heavy downpour we didn’t let it dampen our spirits. Some people even said it made the

experience better.” Sajid Mahmood, a volunteer who worked alongside the campaign, was also of the opinion that no weather was going to stop the participants from enjoying themselves. He added: “It was an excellent event which saw people from really diverse backgrounds and community groups come together. The weather did let us down a little bit but there were still hundreds who turned up which was brilliant.” The affiliated school groups who contributed to the creation of lanterns were: Shipley C of E Primary, Frizinghall Primary and Heaton St. Barnabus Primary. Meanwhile, other social groups included: 88th Bradford Guide Group, Manningham Mills lunch club, Positive Bradford, Bradford Woodcraft Folk, Bradford Young Ambassadors Group, Shipley Baptist Church, St. Margaret’s Frizinghall, Frizinghall Community Room, Rae Gala, Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure, Gracespace, Little Lane Church, Mum’s group, and finally Frizinghall Girls Group.

Tackling food poverty together

Food bank providers from across Leeds came together earlier this week, to discuss ways they can continue to meet demand and tackle food poverty in the city. The seminar brought together food banks from across the city, all of which are voluntary or faith-based organisations who rely heavily on donations from members of the public and businesses. Poverty is one of the major challenges facing Leeds in current times â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a challenge which the council is tackling head on. Leeds City Council is putting together a major strategy which aims to tackle all the issues surrounding poverty and financial hardship.

Set for closure

Kirklees Cabinet has approved detailed plans to close the Deighton Centre in 2014 as part of the council strategy to make savings and efficiencies by relocating staff and services into existing town centre buildings. The Deighton Centre currently operates as a multi-use centre with office accommodation, training, community event space and a nursery. The grounds also house three playing fields and the Deighton Sports Arena near the site entrance which is operated by Kirklees Active Leisure - neither of these will be affected by the closure. The centre currently houses a number of services and office staff but the building is inefficient and has significant maintenance and investment liabilities.

Walkers wanted

Ramblers are being invited to take part in a six-mile walk on and around Castle Hill at 11am on Friday 1st November. The walk marks the ancient festival Samhain (pronounced 'sow-in') which literally means 'summer's end'. The festival celebrates the end of the summer and the start of winter and has developed over the years into what we now celebrate as Halloween. The end of the summer provides a time to reflect and get ready for winter. The walk led by Ranger Julian Brown will be moderate in difficulty covering some rough terrain and slopes and will last for approximately 3 hours. The walk is free but booking is essential and if you are interested in taking part contact Julian on 07968 426312. Walkers are advised that only assistance dogs are allowed.

Record breaking recycling

For the first time ever, Leeds residents have recycled more than half their rubbish. The 50 per cent barrier was broken in June, according to the latest released statistics, when recycling rates hit an all-time high. By making the most of green recycling bins, brown garden bins and recycling points and centres, 52 per cent of waste from across the city was recycled; the highest ever for a single month. The record-busting performance takes the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overall recycling rate for 2013/14 so far to just over 47 per cent. The feat also means that an amazing 7,000 tonnes less waste has been sent to landfill so far compared to the previous year.

Slavery: A hidden crime

India and Pakistan house 54 per cent of the world’s population of enslaved people Over 16 million or half the world’s population of modern day slaves live in India and Pakistan, according to the inaugural Global Slavery Index published this week. An estimated 30 million people worldwide are living in modern-day slavery, of which 2.1 million are in Pakistan and a staggering 14 million are based in India. The report by the Walk Free Foundation ranks 162 countries on ‘modern slavery’ by using reports from governments and nonprofit organisations as well as statistical estimates. The Walk Free Foundation’s definition of modern slavery includes slavery itself, as well as human trafficking and forced labour, and slavery-like practices such as debt bondage, forced marriage, and sale or exploitation of children. According to the index, India has the highest total number of enslaved people in the world, between 13.2 million to 14.6 million, followed by China with 2.9 million enslaved people, and Pakistan with 2.1 million enslaved people. According to estimates by the WFF report, over 1.2 per cent of the Pakistani population is enforced into in some form of slavery. In India, this percentage rests somewhere around 1.13 per cent, while in China it is about 0.22 per cent. Combined, both India and Pakistan house 54 per cent of the world’s population of enslaved people. The index also ranks countries on a slavery prevalence rating based on factors including ratio to country population. Mauritania and Haiti rank among the countries with the highest prevalence of

modern slavery. An estimated 4 per cent of West African nation Mauritania’s population is living in some form of slavery. Pakistan and India follow the list, ranked third and fourth respectively on prevalence of slavery. Taken together, countries with the highest numbers of enslaved people – India, China, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Russia, Thailand, Democratic Republic of Congo, Myanmar and Bangladesh – account for 76 per cent of the total estimate of 30 million in modern slavery today. The Walk Free Foundation is a Perthbased anti-slavery charity founded by Australian tycoon Andrew Forrest. The index has been endorsed by popular leaders including US Secretary Hillary Clinton, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, current Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, and philanthropists Richard Branson and Bill Gates. The charity hopes the annual index will help governments monitor and tackle what it calls a “hidden crime.” Nick Grono of WFF explained how many people assume it ended when the Atlantic slave trade was abolished in the 1800s: “A lot of people are very surprised to hear that slavery still exists. “What modern slavery is - is a situation that reflects all of the characteristics of slavery of past centuries. People are controlled by violence. They are tricked or they are forced into jobs or situations where they are economically exploited. They live on no pay or base subsistence pay and they’re not free to leave. “I think once we start pointing out the scale of the problem on a country by country basis, policy makers will react.”

MISSING SEARCH: Seemberjeet Kaur has been missing since Wednesday 23rd October

Police are appealing for help after becoming increasingly concerned for the welfare of a Bradford woman who has not been seen since Wednesday 23rd October. 35-year-old Seemberjeet Kaur, from East Bowling, Bradford, took a taxi from her home to Saltaire at approximately 10am on Wednesday and was dropped off in the Salts Mill area at around 10.30am. Her disappearance is described as ‘out of character’. Ms Kaur is described as Asian; about 5ft 4in tall, of slim build, with straight black shoulder length hair which she usually wears down. She was wearing a beige coat, blue jeans and metallic brown ankle boots when last seen. Officers are increasingly concerned for her welfare as she has been suffering from depression. It is unknown whether she has taken her medication, but she has not taken any personal property with her. Anyone who has seen her or who has any information on her whereabouts is asked to contact Bradford District CID via the nonemergency number 101.

Just three months after a devastating fire spread through a Bradford Supermarket, the local business has launched its latest venture in the form of Food-2-Go. Located on Manningham Lane, the new eatery is the latest extension of the Pakeezah Group and was officially opened on Friday 11th October with hundreds of guests in attendance. The £300,000 establishment was built to replace the Ingleby Road store, which remains closed for the foreseeable future. Fire had destroyed hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of stock and caused millions of pounds worth of damage to the store during the month of Ramadan. The new Food-2-Go store offers the same wide range of authentic Asian-cuisine and has already proved a big hit with its customers. “We have been established in Bradford for more than 40 years and so the public know what they are getting when they visit one of our stores,” Pakeezah Director, Mohammad Jamil explained. “The launch went really well and we have been really busy since opening our doors with the public

clearly delighted to be able to receive their Pakeezah food again. “My brother, Shamas-Ul-Haq, and I thought long and hard about the best way of officially announcing our opening. After contemplating a range of celebrities we decided there was only one person who truly fitted the bill and so our mother, Gazim Fatima, was selected to cut the ribbon.” He added: “She has been an integral part of the company since day one, and so we thought it was only fitting that she did the honours.” The Bradford-based company was founded in 1967 by Mazahr-Ul-Haq with a small store in Undercliffe. From these humble beginnings, the company has witnessed a substantial growth and has become one of Bradford’s most recognisable brands. The family-run business established itself as the city’s first ever Asian-purpose supermarket 17 years ago, and expanding into a range of stores. Despite the fire in Thornton causing the business a major setback in its trading, Mohammad Jamil explained how

important it was to reopen as soon as possible to cater for the customers. “As soon as the fire hit the business, we had people asking when we are reopening because we have been fortunate enough to become a key part of society,” he explained. “They offered support from day one and so we are very grateful for that and proud to open the new Food-2-Go store which will

Leeds has launched its Apprenticeship HUB to offer free and impartial advice on all things apprenticeship related. Backed by funding from Leeds City Region, the HUB will be working with small to medium sized businesses across the city and young people aged between 16 and 24 to help match businesses with apprentices and vice versa. The HUB launched in September 2013 and has already engaged with over 60 businesses who are looking to create new apprenticeship opportunities, and has registered 450 young people through the various workshops and events it has held. Since 2011 nearly 15,000 apprenticeships have been created in Leeds, and currently there are over 200 opportunities available in the city, ranging from kitchen assistants, business administrators to engineers.

Museum madness

Bradford Council’s Museums and Galleries are a great free day out, with plenty on offer and a wide range of family activities to enjoy over the half-term holiday. Families can get the holiday off to an intriguing start by visiting City Park on Saturday 19th October. As part of the Science Festival Family Day, Bradford Industrial Museum’s green Jowett van will be on display between 10am and 3pm and people can visit the venue’s learning team stall. Elsewhere at Cartwright Hall Art Gallery, families can take part in a lantern making workshop on Saturday 19th October between 3 and 5pm. Britain’s Curry Capital

They did it in 2011; they did it in 2012; and now, in 2013, Bradford has once again been crowned the Curry Capital of Britain. For an unprecedented third year in a row, the West Yorkshire city clinched the top accolade ahead of places such as Manchester, London and Glasgow, to continue their dominance in the awards. Bradford's unique bid included the creation of a limited edition curry flavoured crisp, developed by local company Seabrook and Bradford restaurant Akbar's, as well as a Poppadomathon. The team in charge of this year’s bid included other restaurants such as Aagrah, Kiplings, Omar's, Shimla Spice and Zouks. Faisal Hussain, manager of Shimla Spice, Shipley, explained how Bradford’s love for curry has helped the city become a leader in the field. “Bradford is the Premier League for curries,” he said. “There are so many fantastic restaurants in the city that we certainly deserved to be recognised as Britain’s ‘Curry Capital’. “For this year’s bid, we put together an expert team and have worked extremely hard to retain the title by doing things such as the curry flavoured crisps. “To win the title just once is a real honour, but to now be named champions a record three times in a row, it is unbelievable and fantastic for Bradford.” Bradford already hosts the annual World Curry Festival and this latest accolade reaffirms the cities position at the top of the curry industry. Bradford Council's Executive Member for Employment, Skills and Culture Councillor, Susan Hinchcliffe, said she was delighted to see the title return ‘home’. “It just shows we're unbeatable as a city,” she said, “I want to thank our superb restaurants, the Bradford tourism team and of course Seabrooks crisps for making the bid that extra bit special this year. They have all contributed to this wonderful success.

At the end of the day they were always going to turn up and the police did a fantastic job to ensure the day was peaceful. It was good to see no youths getting overly-involved with either side this time as well. Previously, when the EDL visited Bradford, there were clashes between a lot of the younger demonstrators but they seem to have learnt from this. There seems to be a greater understanding from all sides on how to handle the event.

A long weekend, which threatened to be marred by the English Defence League’s protest through Bradford, went mainly unscathed thanks to a ‘united city’. Police officers outnumbered the EDL supporters by almost two-toone on Saturday 12th October as the short-lived protest proved a peaceful affair with only a handful of arrests. More than 1,000 officers were in attendance to ensure the event remained a passive one, whilst approximately 150 counterdemonstrators held their own event in the Urban Garden. The police operation is believed to have cost approximately £1million yet Bradford South Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Simon Atkin, believes the cost was worth it for the success of the day. He said: “The significant planning and partnership work alongside Bradford Council which preceded these demonstrations has resulted in a successful and professional policing operation. “Yet again, Bradfordians have shown the level of community spirit which exists in our city and have not

reacted to provocation. “I am extremely proud of the response from local people, which has ensured today’s events passed peacefully and with the least disruption. “I would also personally like to thank all those who have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks to bring about this positive conclusion. “The fact that the public went about their business during this time, is a real testament to their resolve. “People remained calm, supporting the police and our partners throughout. We are now working together to return the area back to normality.” Preceding the day was a unique initiative, organised by Bradford Together – a banner organisation consisting of groups including Bradford Women for Peace, Bradford Muslim Women’s Council, Unison, Bradford TUC and HOPE Not Hate. On Friday 11th October thousands gathered in Centenary Square to show their solidarity and opposition to the EDL, taking part in a number of activities. More than 2,500 green ribbons were given out as a symbol of peace by the Bradford Women for Peace, whilst thousands of cards were signed and joined together to create

a giant ‘Wall of Peace’. Bana Gora is the CEO of Bradford’s Muslim Women’s Council and a leading figure in Bradford Women for Peace. The avid peace protestor told the Asian Express that it is time for the EDL to have restrictions put in place to prevent the right wing group from demonstrating in certain cities. “Today is leading on from 2010 when the EDL came to Bradford and a group of women from diverse backgrounds religions, faiths, came together to say we don’t want your problem here,” she said. “We just want to send out a message of solidarity, a message of peace and that women are standing together and that’s basically what the Bradford Women for Peace movement is about. “It is lovely to see so many people here today; you have got men, you’ve got children, women, everybody.” Sulina Ulah, director of Bradford’s Muslim Women’s Council added: “No organisation has the right to eat away the very scarce public resources that we have, not at this time of austerity. “Do we want people to get healthcare, social care or do we want policing for these violent, racist protests?”

Fareen Hussain Unlike previous years I didn’t hear a lot about the latest EDL protests which is surely only a good thing. I didn’t hear anybody on social media saying ‘let’s go down’ or anything like that; it just seems that the majority of people decided to simply ignore it. Local communities have learnt from the past and it was pleasing to hear no youths had got involved too. I think the creation of youth groups and community meetings has helped them realise that, by reacting to these protests, they risk giving Bradford a bad name and we don’t want that.

Amjad Pervez The response by the churches, the Council for Mosques, and all religious organisations was an exemplary one. They showed how, as a community, everybody can come together to create this strong united front against the stupidity which was happening in the city. One of the biggest problems is the effect on local businesses. It is not fair. We live in a democratic society which gives everybody the chance to speak their mind however when it hampers businesses cash flow, which they need to survive, perhaps we need to look at other ways of staging these events. We don’t want the city to be known just for marches and the EDL and that is why there are lots of Bradfordians constantly working with the council to portray our city in a positive light.

‘Dysfunctional’ REPORT: The Al Madinah school has been placed in ‘Special Measures’ by Ofsted officials

Muslim free school slammed by Ofsted

Just one year after opening, a Muslim free school has been labeled ‘dysfunctional’ by Ofsted inspectors and rated inadequate in every category. The Al-Madinah school, in Derby, was temporarily closed earlier this month following its inspection and the official Ofsted report, which has now been released, WARNING: PM David Cameron continues to question the urged the school to take standard of the institution. immediate action or face closure The Ofsted inspection had

been due to take place by the end of the calendar year but was prioritised following allegations that female teachers were obliged to wear hijabs and boys and girls were segregated. Since the report, the school has written to all pupils and staff telling them there is no requirement to cover their hair. The inspection found a number of ‘glaring inadequacies’ within the school. It included: pupils being given the same work ‘regardless of their different abilities’, an ineffective governing body, boys and girls had different lunch sittings, and the school was described as being ‘in chaos’. Inspectors gave the school the lowest ranking – ‘inadequate’ - in every area, prompting the chief inspector of schools, Sir Michael Wilshaw, to call for it to be placed in special measures. This means Ofsted will carry out inspections at the school at short notice to monitor improvements. If poor performance continues the school could be closed. Dr Stuart Wilson, the

acting head teacher, said there were ‘significant and serious problems’ at the school and accepted some of the lessons were not meeting necessary standards. “Are special measures a disaster for the school? Yes, they are,” he said. “It’s not where we want the school to be at this time but we accept the report.” Reacting to the findings, Prime Minister David Cameron told BBC Radio Derby: “If they don't take immediate action to deal with these things then I think it is right it should close and I think it's absolutely right to intervene rapidly when these things aren't working properly. “Let’s not use this as a stick with which to beat the whole free school movement - there are now hundreds of schools which have set up as free schools, and on average they have more outstanding and good ratings than established schools. “When it goes wrong - just as with a state school – you’ve got to get in there and sort it out, or close it down,” he said.

Bradford District’s Junior Chamber, JCI Bradford has seen their pilot Harvest Festival Project achieve great things in just a few weeks of launching with thanks to local schools and in particular one local business, Multibrands International Limited. JCI Bradford’s Community Director, Michelle Pemberton said: “We decided to run a Harvest Festival Project because we understand the needs of our local community and that hunger and poverty are real issues faced by the young and the elderly. JCI is a global partner of the United Nations and we aim to support the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through our community

activities. “It’s a common misconception that MDGs focus on international issues outside of the UK but actually they are global issues affecting many people, everyday. MDG number one aims to eradicate extreme hunger and poverty hence we aligned our project with this accordingly.” The appeal started on 23rd September and runs until 25th October 2013. One of the first schools to get on board with the project was Bradford Grammar

School who are key supporters of JCI Bradford’s other successful project, the Secret Santa Appeal and have been for over 15 years. “We are very grateful to Multibrands, Bradford Grammar, Dixons Trinity, Bankfoot Primary and Iqra Primary for supporting this project. It has meant that we can

Police launch new three year strategy

Police and Crime Commissioner for West Yorkshire, Mark BurnsWilliamson marked the launch of the Kirklees Hate Crime Strategy by signing the Hate Crime Charter at an event at Huddersfield Town Hall on Wednesday.

Mr Burns-Williamson was joined by Cllr Jean Calvert, the chair of the Kirklees Safer Stronger Partnership Board and Cabinet Member for Communities, and Superintendent Ged McManus from West Yorkshire Police. Together they outlined the issues surrounding hate crime and identified three principles the strategy is based on and will be focusing on for the next three years. These include preventing hate crime, increasing the reporting of hate crime, effective action against perpetrators, supporting victims of hate crime and improving partnership responses. Mr Burns-Williamson said: “It’s particularly pertinent that we are signing the Kirklees Hate Crime Charter during hate crime awareness week. Launching the strategy this week to coincide with this national campaign aims to raise awareness of the issues around hate crime and deliver a clear message that it won't be tolerated. “I made a firm commitment to tackling hate crime in my Police and Crime Plan launched earlier this year and I am determined to make this a priority moving forwards to ensure that we have a high quality, responsive and

consistent level of service across West Yorkshire – that puts victims and witnesses at the heart of what we do. “In the almost 12 months I’ve been in the role of Police and Crime Commissioner I’ve become increasingly aware of the wonderful partnership working that is taking place all across West Yorkshire. We are definitely stronger working together than we are alone and this will become even more important as we face further financial challenges in the future. “I am so pleased to see this truly reflected today in the work that is taking place in Kirklees with the Hate Crime Strategic Group. “Working together in this way makes sure that victims of hate crimes, who may not want to contact the police, have different ways of reporting and there’s a joint response within a strong partnership framework.” The Strategy Launch was attended by members of the Kirklees Hate Crime Strategic Group, partners and invited guests including Kirklees Council Chief Executive, Adrian Lythgo, and Crown Prosecution Service, Stop Hate UK, Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing, Libraries, Bradford Hate Crime Alliance and MENCAP.

Cllr Jean Calvert added: “Challenging the attitudes behind Hate crime and celebrating diversity send out a clear message to Kirklees residents that there is zero tolerance to such views and behaviors. “The principles of the strategy aim to resolve issues and tensions, especially community tensions, before they manifest in to hate crimes. It’s important to remember that hate crimes occur, not just in the area of race but in many other areas such as religion, sexual orientation or disability.” Kirklees Police Superintendent Ged McManus said: “It’s recognised that all forms of hate crime are under-reported, and tackling this remains a priority for West Yorkshire Police. “The police play a key enforcement role within the Kirklees Hate Crime Strategic Group which has a collective agenda to raise awareness of what hate crime is, how it can be reported and the support available. “Reporting does make a difference, whether you have been a victim, a witness or you are reporting on behalf of someone else. A group of selfless individuals visited Bradford Royal Infirmary earlier this week to ensure that no child would be without a gift this Eid. The team of four, from Bradford based Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA), delivered more than 30 gifts to Children’s Ward 17 on Tuesday 15th October in celebration of the Islamic holiday. Members of the Bradford based organisation all contributed towards the purchase of the Eid gifts which were delivered to the grateful children. General Secretary of NADA, Nazim Ali, was one of the individuals who handed over the gifts and said just to see the child’s smile certainly ‘made his Eid’. He said: “We realise Eid is a period of celebration for Muslims however; it is also a period where we

should reflect and support the most vulnerable in society. To this end we felt the need to make a proactive difference. “When we presented the gifts to the children they were ever so happy and seeing them smile was priceless, it certainly has made our Eid.” Nazim felt a personal connection with the Children’s ward after spending a prolonged time in the unit during his own childhood. “On a personal level, this was a poignant moment for me since as a child I spent a significant period at the Children's Ward in BRI as I suffered from Tuberculosis,” he explained. “I can empathise with what these children are going through and it brought back memories. To have been involved in the distributing of the toys was understandably a special moment for me.” Cath Piggott, play specialist at the BRI, was delighted to see such generosity and explained

how much the gesture meant to all the hospital’s stakeholders. “It is absolutely brilliant,” she said. “No child wants to be in hospital at any time and especially when they are celebrating Eid. “I think they are all a bit overwhelmed because they saw all the gifts. We appreciate it and they do too. “I didn’t expect anything like this so it is really love. “It is a lovely thing for everybody. It cheers the parents up as well because they can see their children are happy. All children love presents and it is great for the adults to be able to see their kids enjoying themselves. “It is fantastic for the staff as well. When everybody is happy it makes our job easier and helps create the relaxed atmosphere.” The group now plan on repeating the gift donation programme in the near future, whilst other fundraising events are always ongoing.

It is common for a business to market its products using a trademark which distinguishes its goods from others in the marketplace. The value of a trademark can often be said to be priceless as it becomes synonymised with a business’ product. Therefore it is common to register trademarks in order for a business to protect its intellectual property and in turn its brand. In the recent case of Maier & Anor –vASOS plc & Anor the High Court considered the claim of Mr Roche Maier (the Chief Executive Officer of Assos of Switzerland) and Assos itself. Assos is a Swiss company which designs cycle clothing and had produced the first pair of lycra cycling shorts. Assos, which comes from the Greek word to mean ‘the best’, are a high end specialist clothing retailer trading in over 30 countries worldwide. The Defendants were ASOS plc and ASOS.COM Limited. ASOS operates a global fashion company which retails its products only through its online store. ASOS sells a wide range of affordable clothing and beauty products which are marketed at a young audience. The Claimants claimed that the use of the word ‘ASOS’ infringed its registered trademark ‘ASSOS’. They further claimed that this infringement had caused confusion and as a result ASOS had been ‘passing off’ its products as products of Assos or products which were in some way connected with Assos. ASOS counterclaimed alleging that Assos’s trademark should be revoked in part because of non-use. ASOS also claimed that they had pre-existing intellectual property rights to the word Asos and those rights existed at the time Assos had registered their trademark. The Court considered that there was a similarity between the words Assos and

ASOS and a similarity in the logos used by the businesses to promote their brands. Yet, any likenesses between the goods sold by Assos and ASOS were limited to a small amount of casual clothing. Assos’s clothes were specialist cycling clothes purchased by a particular market whereas the clothes sold by ASOS were varied in range and targeted to a different audience. The survey evidence gathered by Assos was of particular importance in this case. Prior to the trial Assos sought permission from the Court to conduct an evidence gathering exercise by the use of two surveys. The first at The London Bike Show which asked participants to identify an ASOS clothing label and the second via an advertisement in the Guardian newspaper in which customers were invited to provide feedback about Assos for the chance to win flights to Paris. Assos were granted permission to conduct the two surveys but the evidence gathered as a result actually established that there was a minimal amount of confusion surrounding the products offered by Assos and ASOS. The claims for trademark infringement and passing off failed. In a further setback to Assos, ASOS’s counterclaim for partial revocation of the Assos’s trademark was successful. In an attempt to protect its trademark and in turn its brand, Assos actually found itself with a ‘diluted’ trademark. It is therefore important to ensure that not only is your businesses trademark protected by way of registration but also that it is used on a regular basis to ensure it is not revoked for non use. Less than two weeks after the controversial ‘Go Home or Face Arrest’ vans were banned for using ‘misleading figures’, the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA) has been slammed for sending out thousands of potential misdirected texts to ‘suspect’ illegal immigrants. The UKBA sent out almost 40,000 text messages, through Capita, telling people they no longer had the right to remain in the country and are required to leave. However, after over 100 complaints were made by British citizens and legal immigrants stating they had received the texts wrongfully, the UKBA has been criticised for attempting to ’fish out’ the illegal parties at random. One recipient of the message was founder of the anti-racism charity, Southall Monitoring Group, Suresh Grover. Mr Grover has lived in the country for almost 50 years and helped lead campaigns in the past

for families of Stephen Lawrence, Zahid Mubarek and Victoria Climbie, and also runs race relations advice surgeries across London. Speaking to the Asian Express, Mr Grover, spoke of his disbelief upon learning that the text was meant for him. “I initially got the text message in August and just thought it must have been spam,” he said. “It wasn’t until September that I contacted the UKBA and questioned if I was the wrong recipient and to my surprise I wasn’t. “I couldn’t believe it. I have been living in Britain since 1966 so I don’t know why they contacted me. Why would they think I’m unlawfully here? “The thing I wanted to know most was how they got my number but they would only reply to quantifiable questions. I have sent in another Freedom of Information request as I want to know who gave them my number. “I’m just tired of having to justify myself as a British citizen.” Mr Grover criticised the text

A symbolic item, owned by Mahatma Gandhi, will go up for auction next month and is expected to fetch more than £50,000. Ghandi’s spinning wheel, used in the past to create cotton, will be sold at Mullocks Auctions, at Ludlow Racecourse on the 5th November. Given to the American Free Methodist missionary Revd Dr Floyd A. Puffer, Ghandi used the wheel whilst in prison to weave his own cotton as the British imports were too pricy for many natives. Previously, cotton was grown in India where the men would harvest it and the British would ship it back to England and have it woven and spun into cloth. The portable device was created to give everybody the chance to create their own produce. Mullock’s will auction over 60 Gandhi related artefacts next month at the auction.

It is simply wrong for this sort of message to be sent by text, and to be so poorly targeted.” A Home Office spokesman replied: “We are taking proactive steps to contact individuals who records show have no valid right to be in the U.K., some of which date back to December 2008. We believe it is right to enforce the immigration rules.”

Teenage education activist, Malala Yousafzai, paid a visit to Buckingham palace last week for a reception for commonwealth, youth and education guests. The 16-year-old, who was shot in the head by Taliban forces in Pakistan last year after campaigning for women’s right to education, met Her Majesty The Queen and gifted the British monarch a copy of her book, ‘I am Malala’. She was later reduced to laughter by a comment from the Duke of Edinburgh, after joking that in this country, people want children to go to school to get them out of the house. Malala visited the Palace with her father, Ziauddin, and both spoke with the Royal couple. Malala said that she would not ordinarily miss a day of lessons - but made an exception. Speaking after the reception, Malala said: “I had to miss school because I was meeting the Queen. It's such an honour for me to be here at Buckingham Palace and it really is an honour to meet the Queen. “I also wanted to raise the issue of girls not being educated on a higher platform so that the government in each country takes action on it. “We need to fight for education in the suffering countries and developing countries, but also here.”

One of India’s most notorious arms dealers who figures on the CBI’s list of ‘undesirable contact men’ may soon be offered a seat in the House of Lords. Sudhir Choudhrie has donated hundreds of thousands of pounds to the UK’s Liberal Democrat party and is believed to be in line for a prestigious seat amongst some of Britain’s most powerful people. According to some media reports, British deputy PM Nick Clegg has proposed that Choudhrie, one of the biggest political donors to Liberal Democrats, be appointed a peer. The move would come at a time when the Italian authorities and CBI are investigating the VVIP helicopter scandal, in which Italian technology group, Finmeccanica's former senior executives have claimed that Choudhrie was the Italian consortium's middleman for India contracts in the past. He has also been identified by the CBI in a list of 23 undesirable contact men, with whom government departments and officials are not to have any business, contacts or accept hospitality or gifts from. According to reports, Choudhrie's family has donated more than £640,000 to Liberal Democrats since 2004. He has personally given £95,000 while family companies gave at least £525,000 to the ruling party, according to them. Choudhrie runs several companies in the UK, India and elsewhere. The parent company of many of his firms is Harberry Investments, which is based in the tax haven of British Virgin Islands. Choudhrie is believed to be India's most powerful arms-dealer. He has extensive interests in Europe, Israel, and Russia. Rising with the help of an uncle who once was a senior official with the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited ( HAL), Choudhrie has had a dizzying growth as an arms-dealer over the last three decades.

A Ukranian student with a hatred of "non-whites" has admitted murdering an 82-yearold grandad in Small Heath and plotting to cause explosions near mosques just days after he entered the UK. Pavlo Lapshyn, 25, appeared at the Old Bailey this week and pleaded guilty to murdering Mohammed Saleem as he walked home from a mosque in Birmingham in April on April 29th this year. Whilst he remained at large, the postgraduate student also admitted causing an explosion on July 12th near the Kanzal Iman mosque in Tipton, and engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts between April 24th and July 18th this year. This included planting bombs near mosques in Walsall and Wolverhampton, researching locations to plant bombs and buying chemicals via the internet to make explosives. The Ukrainian, from Dnipropetrovsk, was in the UK on a sponsored work placement at a software firm in Birmingham when he was arrested on

suspicion of Mr Saleem's murder nearby on July 20. At the Old Bailey, 25-year-old Lapshyn pleaded guilty to murder, as well as plotting to cause explosions near mosques in Walsall, Tipton and Wolverhampton in June and July. The postgraduate student, from Dnipropetrovsk in Ukraine, was living in Birmingham while on a temporary work placement in the city when he killed Mr Saleem. The grandfather of 22 had been attending prayers at the Small Heath mosque and was just a few minutes walk away from his home when he was stabbed three times. Later, Lapshyn planted three bombs near three mosques in the West Midlands as part of a campaign he said was motivated by racial hatred. He was arrested almost a week after an explosion near the Kanzul Iman Masjid mosque in Tipton on July 12th. Detective Superintendent Shaun Edwards, from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit, said: "We found part-made

June 21 - An explosive device, packed into a child's lunchbox by Lapshyn, goes off outside a mosque in Walsall in the West Midlands. June 27 - A man from Walsall is arrested in connection with the explosion outside the mosque, but is later released without charge. he confesses to planting the device. July 12 - A third bomb packed with more than half a kilogramme of nails explodes outside the Kanzul Iman mosque in Tipton, West Midlands, with detectives later saying it was a miracle nobody was hurt. July 16 - Police investigating the Walsall blast release CCTV images clearly showing Lapshyn's face but despite their clarity investigating officers are baffled as to why they receive only a few calls about the images, with no solid leads as to who the attacker might be. July 18 - Lapshyn is arrested for the Walsall mosque bombing when two neighbourhood police officers acting on their initiative and using clues from the CCTV images, make door-to-door enquiries tracing the Ukrainian to his place of work where he is identified by work colleagues. A search of his flat reveals bombmaking equipment along with

incriminating literature and data on his computer. July 20 - In custody, Lapshyn is further arrested for the murder of Mr Saleem after police uncover incriminating evidence on the computer seized from his flat at Delcam. July 22/23 - Lapshyn is charged with the murder of Mr Saleem and further charged over the explosions in Walsall and Tipton. July 25 - Lapshyn appears in court for the first time charged with murder, as well as explosives and terrorism offences. October 21 - Lapshyn admits murdering Mr Saleem, causing an explosion near a Tipton mosque, and engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts between April 24 and July 18 this year. This included planting bombs near mosques in Walsall and Wolverhampton, researching locations to plant bombs and buying chemicals on the internet to make explosives.

Two months ago, the Asian Express reported on claims from a Bradfordbased organisation that there was racial discrimination taking place in Prisons across the country in regard to catering. Kosher meals were being produced at approximately four times the cost of normal meals and more than twice the price of the halal produce. believe they have the right to dictate to Muslims what is halal. “The UK prison system is denying Muslim inmates meals prepared according to Islamic law as well as the British law while at the same time providing kosher meals to Jewish prisoners where the slaughter methods are identical. “If I was in prison in England I would ask for the kosher meal, because our religion allows us to eat that, however I believe that due to the discrimination which exists, I wouldn’t be allowed it as I’m not Jewish.” At the time, a short justification was offered by a prison service spokesperson and now, a full statement has been issued by the bodies in charge of prison meals. After persevering for almost two months, a full statement from the desk of Owen Sidaway, Head of Catering Services, was finally released in an attempt to justify the difference in prices. It read: “National Offender Management Services (NOMS) has the responsibility for food policy for prisoners within England and Wales. Rules governing specific areas or procedures within prisons are set out in policy documents known as prison service instructions (PSI’s) which contain a number of requirements prisons are expected to meet. Meals for religious diets are set out in: Prison Service Instruction 51/2011 - Faith and

Pastoral Care for Prisoners, and Prison Service Instruction 44/2010 Catering Meals for Prisoners. “Prisons are required to provide prisoners with a multi choice menu which reflects the religious, cultural and lifestyle preferences of their prisoners this will include options for those of both the Muslim and Jewish faith. “The vast majority of meals for prisoners are prepared and cooked within prison kitchens and published menus will have meal options including a vegetarian option suitable for all faiths. “Strictly orthodox Jews who meet Jewish Chaplain requirements will be entitled to a minimum one Kedassia supervised kosher main meal per day which due to the strict preparation and cooking methods applied prison kitchens are not able to produce. These meals are purchased from a mandated national food contract. “I do not hold current data on individual meal costs including halal meals and what prisons ultimately spend on food for prisoners rests with each prison Governing Governor but I can confirm that the NOMS food budget allocation to prisons for this year calculates to be £1.96 per prisoner per day. “The current cost for a prepared kosher meal is £4.85. I hope the information I have been able to provide is useful.”

A package of investment in the eight great technologies of the future will accelerate high-tech progress from the lab to the marketplace and help drive UK economic growth has been announced. Science and Universities Minister David Willetts set out how the UK will tackle some of the greatest challenges of our time, like climate change, energy storage, food production and population growth. Mr Willetts announced that a £70 million Agri-Tech Catalyst, which will help new agricultural technologies bridge the so-called “valley of death” between the lab and the marketplace, is open for bids. This will support one of the UKs largest manufacturing sectors, with the entire agri-food supply chain estimated to contribute £96 billion to the UK economy and support more than 450,000 jobs. Science Minister David Willetts said: “The British

scientific and technological revolution is something to be proud of. By investing in these eight great technologies I firmly believe that the UK will continue to be at the forefront of the global technology race. The eight great technologies are areas which experts have identified as, with the right investment, having the potential to make the greatest contribution to a high-tech, UK industrial revolution. The new technologies help support the government’s wider industrial strategy – a long term approach across the whole of government to give businesses the confidence to invest and grow. That’s right, Aamir Ashfaq is well and truly living out his ‘childhood passion’ through his massive collection of toy cars which has now reached more than 4,000. The 41-year-old from Lahore, Pakistan said his passion developed at an early age. Speaking to the Asian Express, he said: “Collecting model cars is my love since my childhood. I love every single part about these street machines. I loved the sound, speed and especially the looks of these rolling masterpieces. Inspiration for cars will never escape from my mind. “I have managed to collect more than 4,000 model cars over the course of 32 years. I started collecting cars when I was only eight years old.” Aamir said he felt happy when he was in his toy car showroom and couldn’t imagine not collecting toy cars. The enthusiast, who has a normal job in Pakistan, doesn’t care if some may think it’s childish, he loves his hobby. He added: “When I was young, toys always had a special place in my heart, and I really liked trains and aeroplanes too. My parents tried to get me more interested in trains and aeroplanes but, I always came back to my first passion, cars. “My pursuit may not have gone far enough to earn a world record, but no doubt such a collection is still unique in Pakistan.” Over the years, he’s managed to collect model cars linked to famous personalities like James Bond, Mr. Bean, Michael Knight and Batman. “Each of my cars has a history, memories may fade with time but these cars take me back to moments in the past,” he said. “When I hold a car in the palm of my hand, I remember things I had forgotten about the past, and this gives me immense joy. In fact, I can’t explain it in words.” Among his famous brand collection are cars from Matchbox, Hot Wheels, Majorette, Corgi and Johnny Lightening just to name a few. “It was quite difficult to collect a large number of die-cast cars in Pakistan because of their non-availability. Former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and officials this week denied a report that they had approved US drone strikes on Pakistan soil. The Washington Post on Wednesday quoted leaked secret documents as saying Pakistan had been regularly briefed on strikes up till late 2011 and in some cases had helped choose targets. The purported evidence of Islamabad's involvement came as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met US President Barack Obama at the White House and urged him to end the attacks, which are widely unpopular with the Pakistani public. A Pakistani foreign ministry spokesman said the anti-drone stance of the Sharif government, elected in May, was clear and any past agreements no longer applied. Pakistani security officials claimed the story was a US attempt to undermine Sharif's position and reduce criticism of the drone campaign, days after an Amnesty International report warned some of the strikes could constitute war crimes. The Washington Post's revelations concerned strikes in a four-year period from late 2007, when military ruler Pervez Musharraf was in power, to late 2011 when a civilian government had taken over. Gilani, prime minister from 2008 until June last year, vehemently denied giving any approval for drone strikes. “We have never allowed Americans to carry out drone attacks in the tribal areas,” Gilani said. “From the very beginning we are against drone strikes and we have conveyed it to Americans at all forums.” Islamabad routinely condemns the strikes targeting suspected Taliban and AlQaeda militants in its northwest tribal areas. A senior Pakistani security official flatly denied any official deal to help with the drone campaign. A second security official said Washington wanted to spread responsibility as it was coming under increasing pressure from rights groups to halt the drone campaign. The US has carried out nearly 400 drone attacks in Pakistan's restive tribal districts along the Afghan border since 2004, killing between 2,500 and 3,600 people, according to the London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism. Sharif this week called drone strikes a “major irritant” in ties with the US, which have recovered significantly after a series of crises in 2011 and 2012, including a US special forces raid inside Pakistan to kill Osama bin Laden. Rahul Gandhi acknowledges assassination risk India's Rahul Gandhi, whose father and grandmother were both assassinated, has said he recognises that he too may be killed by extremists stirred up by nationalist fervour. The 43-year-old, expected to lead the ruling Congress party into next year's elections, also told a rally this week of how he had been friends with the security guards who killed his grandmother Indira in 1984. “My grandmother and father were assassinated and tomorrow I also may get killed; but I just don't care,” Rahul, who is vicepresident of Congress, said in a strikingly personal speech in the northern state of Rajasthan. The notoriously shy Gandhi has often appeared reluctant to follow in his forebears' footsteps but now appears to be opening up about his personal tragedy as an election tactic against the Hindu national opposition. Indira Gandhi was shot dead by her Sikh bodyguards in revenge for an army assault on

the Golden Temple in Amritsar while Rahul's father Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in 1991 by Tamil suicide bombers. “What does the BJP do? They spark communal fire .... Musharraf denies he ordered Lal Masjid operation

Former president retied Gen Pervez Musharraf has again denied having ordered the Lal Masjid operation and says it was carried out on the directive of the capital administration at that time. A three-member joint investigation team (JIT), whose two members had earlier refused to be part of it, interrogated on Monday the former military ruler at his Chak Shahzad farmhouse which has been declared a sub-jail. According to sources privy to the investigation, Gen Musharraf was interrogated in connection with a doublemurder case registered by Aabpara police on a complaint of Haroon Rasheed, son of Abdul Rasheed Ghazi, deputy Khateeb of Lal Masjid, who was killed in the 2007 operation at the mosque. Mr Haroon has alleged that Gen Musharraf issued the order for the operation in which his father and grandmother Sabiha Khatoon were killed. The former president told the JIT that the operation had been ordered by the then elected government and he had nothing to do with it. The sources quoted him as saying: “I was wrongly implicated. I did not issue

any written order regarding the operation.” He said the then capital administration had called the army for help which led to the operation. He also denied other allegations levelled against him in the FIR. Over 100 people, including 10 army personnel and a Rangers man, were killed during the operation. The killing of Rasheed Ghazi was confirmed when his body was found after the operation, but that of Sabiha Khatoon was never found. A case of her “abduction” was registered by Aabpara police on June 6 last year on the directive of the Supreme Court on a complaint filed Lal Masjid Imam Maulana Abdul Aziz, son of Sabiha Khatoon and brother of slain Abdul Rasheed Ghazi. A police officer said it was yet to be established whether the woman had been killed. He said the police record submitted to the Supreme Court in 2007 showed that no woman had been killed in the operation. He claimed that police had checked the record of autopsies and DNA tests available with the city administration, but found no mention of the woman. Of the 88 bodies, he said, 14 were charred and beyond recognition because of the use of phosphorus bomb. All were male. But a report submitted to the court by the national crisis management cell of the then interior ministry had stated that Abdul Rashid Ghazi and his mother were among the dead. The sources said the JIT would meet in a couple of days to work out a plan to investigate the double-murder case and trace her body. “The disappearance of Sabiha Khatoon is an important issue. Whether she was killed or not during the operation and if she was killed what happened to her body,” the sources said, adding that a directive would also be issued to the investigation officer, in-charge of Aabpara police, sub-divisional police officer and superintendent of police in this regard.

Malaysia court rules non-Muslims can’t use ‘Allah’

A Malaysian appeals court on Monday upheld a government ban against the use of the word ''Allah'' to refer to God in non-Muslim faiths, overruling claims by Christians in this Muslimmajority nation that the restriction violates their religious rights. ''Allah'' is the Arabic word for God and is commonly used in the Malay language to refer to God. But the Malaysian government insists that ''Allah'' should be exclusively reserved for Muslims because of concerns its use by others would confuse Muslims and could be used to convert them. Malaysia's Christian, Buddhist and Hindu minorities have often complained that the government infringes in their constitutional right to practice religion freely, accusations the government denies. Monday's judgment in the

Court of Appeals overturns a decision by a lower court nearly four years ago that ruled against the government ban. Anger over that ruling sparked a string of arson attacks and vandalism at Malaysian churches and other places of worship. The legal dispute stems from efforts by the newspaper of the Roman Catholic Church in Malaysia to use ''Allah'' in its Malay-language weekly publication. Roman Catholic representatives deny there are attempts to convert Muslims and say the government ban is unreasonable because Christians who speak the Malay language had long used ''Allah'' in their Bibles, literature and songs before authorities sought to enforce the curb in recent years. Judge Mohamed Apandi Ali, who led a three-member

appeals court panel, said the use of ''Allah'' was ''not an integral part of the faith and practice of Christianity.'' ''It is our judgment that there is no infringement of any constitutional rights'' in the ban, he said. ''We could find no reason why the (Catholic newspaper) is so adamant to use the word 'Allah' in their weekly. Such usage if allowed will inevitably cause confusion within the community.'' The Rev. Lawrence Andrew, editor of the Catholic newspaper, The Herald, said they plan to appeal Monday's verdict in Malaysia's Federal Court, the nation's highest. ''We are greatly disappointed and dismayed,'' he said. ''This is unrealistic. It is a retrograde step in the development of law in relation to the fundamental liberty of religious minorities.''

Hundreds of millions of emails, messages monitored by US

The US National Security Agency has monitored hundreds of millions of email and instant messaging accounts around the world, reported by American Washington Post newspaper this week. The NSA’s monitoring systems focus on data crucial to government security in the United States and in allied nations, the report added. The Post based its report on information it received from senior intelligence officials and on top secret documents provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. The agency also monitors “tens of millions” of US citizens although privacy laws prevent the US government from spying on its own citizens, the report claimed. The majority of the contacts come from Yahoo and Hotmail accounts, but others also come from Facebook, Google and unspecified other providers. The contacts

amount to a sizeable portion of the world’s email and instant messaging accounts. “You need the haystack to find the needle,” NSA Director Gen. Keith B. The NSA, however, has avoided that error by intercepting contact lists from points “all over the world”, one anonymous official told the newspaper. Large technology companies use data centres around the world to ease the loads on their servers in the United States. But all major service providers — Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Yahoo — told US media outlets that they were neither aware of nor had participated in any mass collection of user data by the US government. The American Civil Liberties Union called the programme a breach of Americans’ basic rights. The programme intercepts email address books and “buddy lists” from instant messaging services as they move across global data links. It gathers contact lists in large numbers and analyses data to search for hidden connections and to map relationships. Those figures, described as a typical daily intake in the document, correspond to a rate of more than 250 million a year. Each day the agency collects contacts from an estimated 500,000 buddy lists on live-chat services as well as from the inbox displays of Web-based email accounts. Foreign telecommunications companies and allied intelligence services cooperate with the NSA in collecting this data. Contact lists stored online provide the NSA with far richer sources of data than call records alone. Address books commonly include not only names and email addresses, but also telephone numbers, street addresses, and business and family information. Inbox listings of email accounts stored in the “cloud” sometimes contain content, such as the first few lines of a message. Taken together, the data can be used to draw detailed maps of a person’s life, as told by personal, professional, political and religious connections. The NSA has not been authorised by Congress or the special intelligence court that oversees foreign surveillance to collect contact lists in bulk. Because of the method employed, the agency is not legally required or technically able to restrict its intake to contact lists belonging to specified foreign intelligence targets.

Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is set to thrill audiences with his portrayal of a Haryanvi gangster with a heartwarming edge, in his new actionentertainer 'Boss’. Directed by Tony D’Souza. ‘Boss’ was released internationally on 16th October 2013 and already has audience’s sides splitting with laughter, and hearts thumping with anticipation. Lead star, Kumar took time out of his busy schedule to explain what talk about the film and how unique it is to anything he has been involved with before.

Q: How would you define your character in BOSS? And what made you sign this movie? A: ‘BOSS’ is a very colourful Haryanvi character and that’s exactly what appealed to me. He is a larger-than-life figure from Haryana with his own distinct style and attitude. That forms the Masti [fun] part in the film. But there are some things he will neither forgive nor forget, highlighted in reference to a particular situation involving the most dearest people in his life. You don’t mess with BOSS and that message is very clear. When Ashwin (Varde) and Tony (D’Souza) came to me with the film’s concept, I loved it. BOSS is about fun, high octane action sequences and stunts and a good sprinkling of romance (not for me though!). Q: How is BOSS different from other action movies? A: It’s different in many ways. The main reason is that we are offering the audience a different type of action movie that has a unique panache and style. Every action sequence is designed differently. BOSS is an intense film with a strong action backdrop, needed to drive a powerful story forward. Q: You shot some major parts for BOSS in Delhi and Bangkok. How was it returning to these places that played such an important role in your life’s journey? A: I grew up in Delhi and worked as a chef and learnt Martial Arts in Bangkok, so both places mean a lot to me. It was emotional returning to Chandni Chowk in Delhi especially though as we were barely 200 meters away

Q: You are perhaps the first actor to ever play a Haryanvi character. What are your thoughts on this, was it a fun role to play? A: Every character comes with its own identity. I was excited about playing a Haryanvi character in BOSS because that’s something I haven’t done before. And I always like to re-invent myself and present to fans a side of my persona they may not have experienced before. The character fitted so well with the story. It was a great experience.

Due to the excitement around the film I was unable to go and visit my old house during the day, but managed to drive past in the early morning recollecting my happy childhood memories. When I was shooting in Thailand, where I studied Martial Arts on the streets of Bangkok, I was also accompanied by my family. I took my son (Aarav) and niece to the kitchen I used to work, eat, sleep and train at in Bangkok when I was 17. Just seeing the small room where I used to rest my head after a tiring day of street fighting for extra money brought back so many memories. I had to fight back the tears in front of my son when I stood in the doorway of the kitchen I once worked so hard in, wondering how different my life is

now. One day I was frying noodles, the next I was frying my brains over learning lines for my first film. Never say it isn’t possible. I’m proof that there is nothing more powerful than fate itself, even when the world thinks you’re just a plain boy wiping tables and cleaning dishes. Q: It took a little while before the industry and the audiences started taking you seriously as a star. How would you describe your journey? A: My journey has been both difficult and fantastic at the same time but I guess that’s part of life. It may have taken time for people to accept that I was more than just a struggling actor. I was also very determined to succeed and you can never achieve success without

working towards it and adopting a diligent, positive and honest approach to this. I was Akshay Kumar, born with nothing but good parents and God’s hand on my shoulder! Q: You worked with Ronit Roy way back in Sainik. How was your experience and how far has he changed now in BOSS? A: When Ronit and I worked in Sainik, we were both very young. There was a lot of affection and respect for each other even then. Working with him again in BOSS after so many years was a wonderful experience. He is a fantastic actor and BOSS will showcase him in a different way. He has worked very hard on his role in BOSS and the audience will be nicely surprised by his

Q: How was the experience of doing action scenes at 47° Celsius? Is BOSS your best action film according to you? A: I would say it was my toughest shooting experience when we shot in 47 degrees. But full marks to the entire unit for bearing it and giving the best results. I would like to believe that in every film, I try to give my best shot. As far as action is concerned, I like to set new records every time. BOSS features a variety of high octane action sequences – the best part is that some of the scenes were very new to me and I haven’t performed these in any other films before. Q: Which is your favourite song from BOSS? A: Please don’t ask me to pick out just one favourite track because I simply love them all. I genuinely believe that the BOSS soundtrack is a complete package. Each song has been shot in a unique way. But yes, the Pitaah song is somehow closer to my heart because it’s about a father-son relationship. Har Kisi Ko’ is another classic treat for everyone who grew up in the eighties.

‘Let Me In…’ Fitness model proves he’s a talented singer and creates a buzz with his debut single featuring Mumzy Stranger! Salique is an exciting new British talent set to release his debut single ‘Let Me In’ on Thursday, 24th October. In a year of celebration for McLaren, this week has seen another significant milestone in an important chapter of McLaren Automotive with the first customer delivery of the groundbreaking McLaren P1. Series production of the latest addition to the McLaren range commenced over the summer, and the first car, finished in a striking ‘Volcano Yellow’ and contrasting visual carbon fibre, rolled off the bespoke production line. bhp) from the highly efficient 3.8litre twin turbo V8 petrol engine and the lightweight electric motor, the McLaren P1 storms from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.8 seconds, and hits 200 km/h (124 mph) in 6.8 seconds – quicker than many hot hatches reach half that speed.

The relentless acceleration, delivered as a result of the instant torque offered by the electric motors and the optimised turbos, sees the McLaren P1 reach 300 km/h (186 mph) in just 16.5 seconds. By way of a benchmark, this is a full 5.5 seconds quicker than the legendary McLaren F1. Top speed is

electronically limited to 350 km/h (217 mph). Despite these impressive figures, the McLaren P1 still returns 34.0 mpg (8.3 l/100km) on the EU combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 194 g/km. The electric motor offers a range of 11 km (6.8 miles) in full electric mode on the NEDC cycle, which sees emissions drop to zero. The braking figures are equally as impressive for the McLaren P1™, with the levels of performance provided by the bespoke Akebono system. The specially formulated carbon ceramic discs, coated in silicon carbide, can bring the McLaren P1 to a halt from 62 mph (100 km/h) in a distance of just 30.2 metres. This figure is even more impressive when compared to the recognised stopping distances, which suggests that more than three times the distance – 102 metres – is required to bring a car to a halt from 100 km/h (62 mph).

FROM SOLIHULL TO MUMBAI Land Rover completes world’s first hybrid expedition along Silk Trail Mumbai, 14th October 2013: Three Range Rover Diesel Hybrid prototypes have completed the ultimate engineering sign-off test by traversing 13 countries over 53 days from Solihull, UK, to Mumbai, India. It is the world’s first ever hybrid expedition along the Silk Trail and one of the boldest driving adventures ever pursued by Land Rover. Hostile conditions on the route included asphalt roads riddled with vast and deep potholes, dusty desert trails in 43°C heat and numerous miles of mud and gravel tracks and cattle trails. In addition, river crossings, passes clinging to the edges of mountains partly blocked by rock falls, the thin air of extremely high altitudes and the dense and erratic traffic of Chinese and Indian roads all added to the test of man and machine. The Silk Trail 2013 expedition was the final validation test for the Range Rover Hybrid before it is signed-off for production. From the home of the Legend in Solihull, UK, it blazed a trail through France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China (including Tibet), Nepal and India. For much of this distance the expedition followed the legendary Silk Road trading routes that first connected Asia with Europe more than 2,500 years ago. Overnight halts were made in hotels, hostels and tents at many of the same staging posts visited all those years ago by Silk Road merchants, missionaries and mercenaries. Where the north and south Silk Roads split, near the remote city of Kashgar in north-western China, the expedition pioneered a mountainous route never previously completed by a vehicle from outside the country and never previously seen in its entirety by any westerner – the Xinjiang-Tibet highway, which put the new Range Rover Hybrid through its paces at heights of over 5,300 metres above sea level. Seven consecutive days were spent at altitudes between 11,000 and 17,648 feet (3,350 and 5,379 metres). At such great heights, oxygen content in the air is reduced from the 21 percent found at sea-level to as little as 10 percent, making movement more difficult for humans and internal combustion engines. The Range Rover convoy continued to make good progress, benefiting from the electric motor’s instant torque at 0 rpm and despite being laden with heavy loads including luggage, camping gear, food, medical equipment, and aerodynamically-unfriendly roof-racks carrying spare wheels, tyres and jerry cans of

fuel. Negotiating tracks so sticky with mud that they were impassable to other types of vehicle, the Range Rover’s hybrid engine combination – with a 35kW electric motor supporting the TDV6 3.0 litre turbo-diesel engine – returned excellent fuel consumption for a vehicle so spacious and powerful. Throughout the epic journey the Range Rover Hybrids typically returned 36 to 37 mpg. Land Rover development engineers closely monitored data loggers fitted to each car, sending back more than 300 gigabytes of detailed technical records to their engineering team at Gaydon in the UK. The purpose of the expedition was not to test the reliability of mechanical components, which are already proven, but to fine-tune the calibration of engine and transmission software to ensure perfectly seamless performance in all terrains and extreme temperatures and altitudes. Technical setbacks reflected the roughness of the road surfaces: 15 punctures among the expedition’s three Range Rover Hybrids and four support vehicles, four wheels damaged by deep potholes, and four windscreens cracked by stones thrown-up on loose surfaces. Peter Richings, Jaguar Land Rover Hybrids and Electrification Director who took part in the final leg from Jaipur to Mumbai commented: “The world’s first diesel hybrid expedition along the Silk Trail pioneered an ambitious route across Europe and Asia that would have been impassable to most other types of vehicle – but no matter how hostile the conditions, the Range Rover Hybrid prototypes took it all in their stride.

“In developing the hybridpowered Range Rover, our objective was to gain hybrid’s fuel economy and carbon emissions advantages without compromising the Range Rover’s go-anywhere capabilities, its cabin space or its refinement. The success of this remarkable expedition clearly demonstrates we have achieved that.”

DEBUT: Jaguars’ C-X75 will be showcased in Birmingham next month

Jaguar to debut state-ofthe-art C-X75 prototype

supercar The Jaguar C-X75, the prototype state-of-art hybrid supercar, will make its Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show debut, as the centrepiece of the Jaguar Classic Parts stand. Held at Birmingham’s NEC from 15th to 17th November, the stand, in collaboration with Jaguar Heritage, will boast an impressive selection of classic and modern Jaguars. Jaguar unveiled the C-X75 concept, which has been provided by Jaguar Cars, in 2010 and has marked the beginning of a new chapter in innovation and technological advancement. The C-X75 can achieve 100mph from standstill in less than six seconds and can continue on to a top speed of 220mph. Considering these impressive

performance statistics, the C-X75 is capable of producing less than 89g of CO2/pkm and will even run with zero emissions for up to 60km. Jaguar Classic Parts welcome visitors to come to their stand in Hall 20 to see this “groundbraking” hybrid vehicle. This year’s stand also includes some historical vehicles from the Jaguar Heritage collection. The cars on display will include: XK120, E-Type, XJ40, XJS, X300, XKR and XFR Rocketsports, all outstanding Jaguars from different eras. A further highlight to this years’ stand in Hall 20 will be a wide range of genuine parts available on display. Jaguar Classic Parts are clearly stating that its commitment to the preservation of classic Jaguar cars has never been

stronger. Jaguar Classic Parts will be providing a limited number of vouchers enabling Jaguar owners to receive a discount on their next order. Jaguar Classic Parts technical advisers will be on hand to answer parts queries and give expert advice. The Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, held at Birmingham’s NEC from 15th to 17th November, is the UK’s biggest classic motoring celebration. Spanning eleven halls, visitors can enjoy an estimated 1,500 cars and 350 motorcycles on display, ranging from the rare and exciting to pre-war and retro classics, the sublime to the ridiculous, and many more.

An early return After making global headlines for all the wrong reasons in 2010, Mohammad Amir could soon be stepping up to the crease again after a decision was made to review the cricketer’s ban. Amir was left disgraced three years ago after plotting to bowl no-balls during the infamous 2010 Lord’s Test against England. At just 18years-old the teenager was the youngest guilty party of the three men

convicted and was handed a five-year ban from the sport and a three month prison sentence. However, the fast bowler could now be set for an early return after the International Cricket Council (ICC) board confirmed earlier this week that the 21-year-old’s suspension will be reviewed in ‘due course’. Any decision on reducing Amir's ban - which ends in 2015 - will not be made until the ICC has adopted its new anticorruption code, which could be as early as January 2014. After their two-day meeting the ICC board released a statement confirming their intention to look into Amir's case. It read: “The ICC Board was informed that a revised version of a more robust and strengthened ICC anti-corruption code will be submitted for discussion/approval at the January

2014 meeting. “During the discussion, the matter of Mohammad Amir's five-year ban also came up for discussion. “The ICC board decided to review the matter in due course after the revised ICC anti-corruption code has been finalised and adopted.” Amir has not played international cricket since the Lord's Test yet reports in Pakistan, before the ICC Board meeting, had suggested that a plea would be made to allow Amir to make an early return to cricket. It was suggested the left-armer might be allowed to resume training at the National Centre in Lahore, and even play domestic cricket before his ban ends. A five-member ICC sub-committee was set up in July to look into the possibility of relaxing Amir's ban.

Tour de Yorkshire official route After months of waiting, the official route of next year’s Tour de France was finally announced earlier this week. As the county gets ready to be taken over by cycling’s elite from the 5th July 2014, these latest details, released at the annual announcement plan in Paris, will act as another milestone for the pioneering race. After completing the official signing-in ceremony in front of Leeds Town Hall, the world’s leading riders will then line up on The Headrow for the ceremonial start of the Tour de France. The initial non-racing rollout will see the peloton ride along The Headrow to Eastgate before turning left onto Regent Street and following the A61 Scott Hall Road and Harrogate Road through Moortown and Alwoodley and on to Harewood. Turning left at Harewood, Le Tour will enter the Harewood Estate taking in the ‘Capability’ Brown-designed grounds and passing the historic Harewood House. Upon leaving the estate and turning left onto the A659, the 190-kilometre Stage One officially begins, following Otley Road and Arthington Lane through Pool in Wharfedale and on to Otley. The route then follows the A65 through Ilkley and Skipton, before turning north and heading through the Yorkshire Dales. The final element of the stage sees the route return south passing through Ripon before the finish in Harrogate. Stage Two sees the riders follow

a hilly 200km test from York to Sheffield, while the final day of the Grand Départ starts in Cambridge and finishes in London. Among those at Wednesday’s Paris announcement were pupils from Carr Manor Community School in Leeds, invited as guests of Tour organisers ASO. Leader of Leeds City Council Councillor Keith Wakefield said: “The Tour de France Grand Départ will be the biggest event hosted in Leeds and Yorkshire in living memory. A teenager from Doncaster is fighting his way to the top as he continues to excel in the hard fought world of kickboxing. 17-year-old Suneil Singh took up the sport just under ten years ago and has never looked back, claiming world titles and prestigious accolades across his junior career.
