Family outraged by lack of police ‘duty of care’ as 54-year-old grandad dies outside his own doorstep TRAGEDY: 54-year-old Nazim Din died on his doorstep as police swooped his home to arrest one of his sons
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A family from Leeds has been left frustrated and angry, after a police raid on their family home resulted in the death of a disabled grandfather. Nazim Din, 54, of Grasmere Court, Wortley, required assistance to walk and was, allegedly, knocked to the ground by officials as they were placing one of his sons in the police van following allegations of criminal damage.
Mr Din’s family claim Nazim was simply trying to tell the authorities that they ‘had the wrong son’, however he was pushed out of the way and subsequently fell to the floor, where he remained, unattended, for more than 20 minutes. An investigation has now been launched by the Independent Police Complaint Commission (IPCC) into allegations that the father of five died as a result of the overexcessive police force.

A family from London is appealing for an Asian bone marrow donor to step forward and help save the life of their six-year-old son. Rayaan Siddiqui was diagnosed with a rare immunodeficiency disease called HLH in May, a disease which only effects half a dozen children each year in the UK. The youngster is currently being treated with chemotherapy and steroids but ultimately his disease can only be cured through a bone marrow transplant. There are currently thousands of people on the bone marrow register; however, before someone can donate their bone marrow, it must closely match that of the person who needs it. Currently, certain ethnic communities are under represented on the bone marrow register meaning it is more difficult, in situations likes Rayaan’s, to find suitable donors. The Siddiqui family are now urging people of Asian
background (Pakistani, Bengali, Indian, Sri Lankan, and Mauritian) to register in a bid to find a match for their son. A statement on behalf of Rayaan’s mother and father, Ghazali & Navida Siddiqui, highlighted the urgency required for a donor to come forward. “Up until eight weeks ago Rayaan was a fit and healthy six-year-old boy, doing all of the fun things that kids of his age do,” they wrote. “At the beginning of May he started getting fevers which were constant and continued unabated for two weeks. Over that period, the GP’s kept telling us that everything appeared fine with him, and that he should bounce back. “After two full weeks of fevers we took him to A&E where we got the same message of nothing being obviously wrong with him. They took a blood test and immediately realised that Rayaan was very ill as all his blood counts were very low. “At the end of three weeks he was diagnosed with a rare immunodeficiency disease called HLH…he was so ill that
he had to be transferred under emergency ambulance to Great Ormond Street ICU, where he remained on a ventilator for a few days. “He has improved considerably since that time; he is being treated with chemotherapy and steroids but ultimately his disease can only be cured through a bone marrow transplant. None of his immediate family are a donor match and we are therefore searching for an unrelated donor on the British bone marrow registry. “This is what this appeal is about today. Only six per cent of donors on the registry are from an Asian background, which means that children like Rayaan have a much lower probability of finding a matching donor. “Please register as soon as possible to potentially help save my little boy’s life.” For information on how to register to become a bone marrow donor visit www.deletebloodcancer.org.uk or if you would like to contact the Siddiqui family directly, please email ghazali.siddiqui@bdo.co.uk

When will they learn? More than 20 years on from the infamous Bradford Riots and it seems that some local authorities are still unable to tackle crimes, by ethnic minorities, without prejudice. In 1994, the ‘Manningham riots’ were sparked following the mishandling of an arrest in the Bradford area whilst in 2001, the approval of a National Front march through the city sparked further riots, resulting in almost 300 arrests. However, where there is a flame there is always a spark, and in both
cases, individual incidents have acted as catalysts to the final riot. This latest Leeds incident holds similar features to the two aforementioned events, but didn’t have the same consequences for the local area. Nadim Hanif, Managing Director of the Asian Express, was appalled by the way the police reportedly handled the situation and believes the backlash from such action, could have been a lot worse than it was. He said: “We’ve had these single
incidents in the past which have acted as a catalyst to huge, city-wide riots, and I am amazed this example in Leeds didn’t cause the same result. “When will the police learn that you cannot treat people this way? They have had experience of this in the past but they don’t seem to take anything on board. Incidents like this are still happening today so why isn’t anything being done about it?”
One of Mr Din’s sons, Nadeem Nazim Din, offered a further account of what happened following his father’s fall. He said: “As soon as he has walked up behind the officer, as far as we have heard, the officer has actually barged him out of the way and then just left him there for over 25 minutes. “It wasn’t until a neighbour came out and started screaming saying ‘what are you doing? There’s a guy on the floor and you’re just stepping over him to get to the vans’ that they actually gave him any attention. “At that point, remembering this is 25 minutes after he was pushed, one of the officers went and had a look at him to check for a pulse. He didn’t do any CPR or anything which they are trained to do, just nodded at his colleague and then they instantly surrounded him and finally called for an ambulance. “When the paramedics arrived, they treated him yet couldn’t even get the ambulance out of the road because of the amount of police cars which had turned up. There were at least 20 of them so by the time they had moved; it had taken another 15 minutes.” He added: “They told us he died in hospital, but it happened much before that.” Nadeem’s younger brother, Adeel Nazim Din, arrived on the scene to see his father on the ground, and explains how he wasn’t even able to help him as he was instantly harassed by the authorities. “I pulled up and as soon as I got out of my car I was sprayed with CS gas (tear gas) from three different angles,” he explains. “I didn’t even get a chance to go to my father. Once they had sprayed me, they then proceeded to put a taser on me and started saying

‘move, move’. I wasn’t being aggressive, they just did it, and there was really no need for it.” West Yorkshire police said no officers had been suspended or placed on restricted duties after the incident. They said in a statement: “West Yorkshire police have reported the circumstances to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) and are co-operating fully with its independent investigation to ensure all the circumstances are properly understood and investigated.” The IPCC confirmed that Mr Din was an innocent person who was not being sought by police. He was believed to have collapsed after his heart stopped. It said: “Nazim Din, who was not being arrested, was said by West Yorkshire police to have tried to intervene while its officers were carrying out a pre-planned arrest in Grasmere Court in the Wortley area of the city at about 7pm on 28th August. “Police say he collapsed in the street and that officers carried out CPR while waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Mr Din was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.” Nazim Din’s family are now pleading for justice to be brought upon the police who neglected their loving family member. In a statement they said: "We urge the police to fully co-operate with those investigating Nazim's death so that the facts can be brought to light as quickly as possible. “We have suffered a terrible loss and do not want to struggle for answers whilst grieving. That is the least the police can do for us at this time." Nazim Din was laid to rest on Friday 6th September.

ASIAN EXPRESS EXCLUSIVE PM David Cameron comments “Free schools work – 75 per cent of those set up so far have been rated as ‘outstanding’ or ‘good’ after inspections.”
on children going back to school “Like many Asian Express readers I’ve seen my children go back to school this week. “And when I drop them at the school gates what I want for them is simple: to go in and learn from enthusiastic teachers, teaching interesting subjects, in an atmosphere of respect for the grown-ups, in a place where learning is inspiring. “I want them to come home talking about the science or history they’ve been taught that day, excited about how they’re getting on. This is what all of us want – because a good education is critical to our children’s chances in life. “This week something big is happening in education around the country– a new set of schools are opening their doors. “These aren’t ordinary schools – they’re
Free Schools, set up by individuals with a passion for education. “Let’s be clear what these schools are. There are no fees. They are not private schools. They are independent schools within the state sector – free for the children who go there, and this Government is the first in British history to let this happen. “Members of the Sikh community in Leeds are opening the brand new Khalsa Science Academy this week. Meanwhile the Muslim community in London are setting up The Olive School in Hackney. “We also call them Free Schools because those who run them are free to innovate – free to do what they think is best for the education of their students. Take the new Nanaksar Primary School in Hillingdon. This school is

going to use the widely respected International Primary Curriculum to teach some of its subjects. “It’s so different to how it used to be. In the old days, all state schools were precisely that – run by the state with rules set from upon high. Free schools put teachers in the driving seat instead. “We’re not doing this for the sake of it. For too long under Labour, we had an education system that failed our children. There was a curriculum that was far too soft; discipline that was far too weak; an attitude in many schools that second best was good enough. Countless young people were left with barely any qualifications and even less confidence. We came in with a burning desire to change things around, and we are.
“Free schools work– 75 per cent of those set up so far have been rated as ‘outstanding’ or ‘good’ after inspections. The objective is very simple: more good, local school places. Taken together with our toughening up of the curriculum for schools run by local authorities, overhaul of exams and drive to recruit excellent new teachers, they amount to the biggest shake-up of education in this country in a generation. “I don’t want a decent education to be the preserve of the better off, I want it to be something that is a reality for everyone. I went to a great school, and so should everyone. Free schools are a critical part of this mission – helping all our children learn and get on in life. Nothing could be more important than that.”
Regards, David Cameron

Sikh Mela Success Thousands gather for Huddersfield Sikh Mela
By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A fantastic day in Huddersfield saw a record attendance for the third annual Northern Sikh Mela, with people travelling from across the country to be in attendance. The yearly event, held at Deighton, was organised to promote community cohesion in the area and help educate the public about Sikh traditions and religious beliefs. Activities included a bird of prey display, archery, fairground rides and a headline performance from Punjabi star, Sukshinder Shinda. Jag Bhullar, a member of the organising committee, was thrilled with the proceedings and said it was a day for community spirit, for families to spend time together and socialise with the wider community. He added: “This is the third Northern Sikh Mela we’ve held here at Warrenside. “Sikhs have come from as far as Birmingham to unite for this fantastic event in the sunshine. “The fact that different cultures and ethnicities have also come

down is brilliant and shows how diverse and peaceful our community can be. “We always have a fantastic day.” Sukshinder Shinda and Balwinder Safri delighted the crowd as they played on the specially constructed stage, to over 5,000 attendees throughout the day long activities. Mr Bhullar was pleased to see a mixture of cultures turn up and hopes that the area will only benefit from future events like the one last week. “We want the wider community to feel we are open and they can interact with us and enjoy learning more about Sikhs,” he said. “We thought having birds of prey would be good because they have a historical connection. “Traditionally our guru used to have a hawk and so the children can see one and they find out more with family. It’s also a good chance for all of the family to come together; the elders can mix with the grandchildren and enjoy being outside together. “With the Mela getting bigger and better every year, I can’t wait until the next one.”

Are you Nomophobic? Over half of population suffer from phone loss anxiety according to survey By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Obssessed with your phone? Well, it seems that over half of the population suffer from nomophobia, the fear of being without your phone. Over 54% admit to suffering from the condition, with women 17% more likely to suffer from nomophobia than their male counterparts. A recent study amongst 1,000 people in employment found that people are now so obsessed with the need to be connected to their phones that even when they are away on their annual holiday, 42% will take their devices down to the beach with them. The survey, which was carried out during the August holidays, has discovered that 28% of people will also look at their work emails whilst away from home, with men slightly more eager to catch their emails than their female counterparts. And it seems the bedroom, rather than a haven of relaxation, is instead another favourite place to work with 17% of people checking their emails in bed. In fact, many risk indigestion as 25% feed their email addiction or text during a dinner
date, with women once again 10% more likely to do so than men. With phones now holding so much valuable information, it is worrying to note that just 50% of people bother to secure them with a password or any other form of security and 70% have no way to remotely wipe the device were their phone to be lost or stolen. Fred Touchette, senior security analyst at AppRiver, who conducted the survey said: “It’s pretty clear that we’re a society totally reliant on our phones not only for personal use but business use too. “What worries me is that, with so much information stored on them from confidential office documents, contact details, emails, photos, bank log-ins, etc., when these devices get lost or stolen and end up in the wrong hands the information is so easily exploited as little to any security precautions are taken. “Our advice is always to protect your phone with security - at the very least with a password, and if you’re using it for work get your IT department to secure them with encryption or even better the ability to wipe them remotely.”

44 years for drug dealers Operation Sabredale continues to succeed in battle against drugs
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
A group of 17 drug dealers have been jailed for more than 40 years after being found guilty of drug offences last week. The individuals were all arrested under Operation Sabredale, a project launched by West Yorkshire Police in an attempt to tackle the distribution of Class A drugs in Bradford. More than 250 warrants have been executed since Sabredale was introduced across the district in the summer of 2012, leading to more than 200 arrests as well as the seizure of £500,000 in cash and nearly £2million
worth of drugs. Out of the latest 17 arrests, ten people were given sentences of more than three years, whilst 23-year-old Qaiser Rehman, of Grantham Road, Great Horton, was handed the heaviest sentence of five years. His brother, Faisal, 19, had his custodial sentence of 18 months suspended for two years, with 180 hours unpaid work. Father of two and carer, Zeshan Hussain, 26, was handed a longer sentence of four years, for his significant role in the distribution channels. Also sentenced were Akheel Ali, 25, of Cecil Avenue, Great Horton, who was jailed for two years; Ansar Mahmood, 24, of Sherborne Road,
Great Horton, was given three years and six months; Amjid Khan, 24, of Boynton Street, West Bowling, was locked up for 27 months; Latvian Igors Kirilko, 31, of Manningham Lane, was jailed for 18 months; and Noman Khan, 35, of Hobine Avenue, West Bowling, was jailed for four years. Defendants who were sentenced to young offender’s institutes included Rommel Morgan, 18, for two years and Iyas Khan, 20, for three years. Bradford District Community Safety Chief Inspector Dan Greenwood was glad to see so many arrests under this latest operation and hopes it will act as a warning to people involved in the crime. He said: “The latest sentences
handed out to drug dealers operating in the West Bowling area were as a result of the latest activity under Operation Sabredale. “Since we launched Operation Sabredale, a key principle was that we would listen and respond to our communities and work with them to tackle this type of criminality. “The residents of West Bowling told us that drug dealing was an issue and we mounted a painstaking investigation which has led to the sentencing of 19 people to a total of 46 years in jail. More people are due in Court in relation to this operation. “Operation Sabredale will continue to target those who feel they can lead criminal lifestyles in Bradford and I can
assure the people of Bradford that more arrests will follow. As long as our community tells us they want to tackle an issue, we will continue to support them and intervene.” He said: “My message to those involved in this kind of criminality is simple; we will investigate your offending, we will arrest you and where possible we will put you in front of a Court. “We continue to urge anyone who has information about drug crime in West Bowling or anywhere else in Bradford District to contact the Police on 101 or CrimeStoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”

Selected by Countryfile presenter John Craven who was born in Leeds, the abbey, which sits spectacularly along the banks of the River Aire and is the home to a number of popular events including Classical Fantasia, will battle it out with nine other nominees to claim the award, which will be chosen by members of the public. Full details on how to vote can be found on the programme’s website at www.countryfile.com/awardsvote. Votes can also be sent via email to awards@countryfile.com. With voting closing later this month on 30th September, lovers of the abbey are being urged to register their support as soon as possible.
Energy investments
Homes in Cross Green are to receive further investment as part of the next stage of the Sustainable Communities Investment Programme (SCIP). At a meeting of the council’s executive board on Wednesday 4th September, members agreed to a cash injection of £4.05million to improve the look of 180 properties in the area along with the energy efficiency of the homes. As part of the next phase of the project works will be undertaken on a number of properties including installing new roofs, windows, doors, rainwater goods and the repointing of external walls and new boundary walls and yards. Alongside this energy efficiency works will be undertaken via Green Deal funding. A contractor for the latest lot of works will be appointed early in 2014, with work proposed to commence on site at the beginning of the next financial year.

Bradford MP David Ward has called for more banks lending to small and medium sized manufacturing enterprises (SME’s) in Bradford who are positive about the future growth of the economy and are keen to invest. Speaking in a Westminster Hall debate in the House of Commons, David highlighted that there are encouraging signs that economic prospects are improving. The latest Purchasing Managers Index showed positive growth from 57 in July to 59.1 in August, with some 1,200 manufacturing SMEs providing employment for 15,000 people in the Bradford district alone.
A recent business survey from Barclays also showed that there was a real intention for business to invest for the future, with 54% of businesses planning to increase investment over the next 12 months, where 63% plan to invest in new machinery, 62% plan to invest in new product development and 42% plan to invest in furniture, fixtures and buildings. However, whilst manufacturing businesses have a positive future investment outlook, any forthcoming investment is being hampered as banks are not lending enough capital to SME’s with figures released by the Bank of England on Monday showing a reduction in lending by £583m. Commenting in the debate David Ward MP said: “Despite the billions of pounds
available through the Government’s revamped Funding for Lending Scheme to boost the flow of credit to small businesses, bank loans to SMEs shrunk 2 per cent in the last quarter. “Businesses are waiting, they are ready to invest but they are being held back by a lack of finance. The money is there, but it is clearly going to the bigger companies, which can always access finance from other sources. The companies that critically need the finance to enable them to carry out their investment intentions, are simply being denied it. “Whatever the reasons, we need to crack this nut if companies in Bradford and across the country are to achieve their full potential and help improve the economy which we are all so desperate to achieve.”

Local fundraiser climbs UK’s highest peak By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A team of 27 fundraisers pushed their endurance levels to the limit last weekend as they ascended Britain’s highest Mountain. Nazim Ali, from Bradford, completed the trek in aid of the Bradford-based international charity, Human Relief Foundation’s (HRF) Syria Appeal, and raised more than ÂŁ800 for the cause. “It was an enjoyable experience and one I would certainly highly recommend although at the summit it was misty and absolutely freezing, I could hardly feel my fingers,â€? Nazim explained.
“I am deeply humbled to have endeavored to have played my role in raising much needed money to help the displaced Syrian refugees and am already thinking about my next fundraising challenge. The trek took just under eight hours to complete and commenced on Saturday 31st August. Nazim, who is also general secretary of Naqshbandia Active Development Association (NADA) which operates Bradford’s Jamia Masjid Naqshbandia Aslamia, was raising funds for Syria’s refugees. With latest reports suggesting that as many as 2million people have fled Syria during the ongoing conflicts, the money

raised will provide much needed blankets, heaters, food parcels and necessities for the most vulnerable. With the cause holding a personal connection to Nazim, he expressed his gratitude for all the donations which have made the event a huge success. He said: “I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has sponsored me and made pledges. I have raised in excess of ÂŁ800 and all the group collectively have raised over ÂŁ10,000 which wouldn't have been possible without people's kind donations and words of support. “I visited the country (Syria) as a tourist seven years ago and can’t believe what is happening there now. To be able to offer
some help is a great feeling to have. Nazim has been an avid fundraiser for 14 years and was voted Community Champion by the Bradford public in the inaugural Community Stars Active Citizens Awards in 2011. With the success of this latest expedition, the 32-year-old is now looking forward to his next venture as he continues to raise funds for the people of Syria. If you would like to sponsor Nazim please visit www.justgiving.com/nazimali300 with 100 per cent of donations going towards the Syria Appeal.

Fine for “stomach churning” Leeds takeaway COCKROACH: Leeds takeaway Munchies has been fined for food safety offences
A popular eatery was taken to court after a cockroach was found on a pizza Popular Leeds takeaway, Munchies, has been issued a hefty fine for food safety offences after a customer found a cockroach embedded in their pizza crust. After being called to investigate the incident on 22nd August last year, environmental health officers found conditions in the premises so appalling that they immediately closed the Harehills Road eatery. Having pleaded guilty to a number of food safety offences, Leeds magistrates last week fined Munchies owner Matloob Hussein £750 and ordered him to pay £1250 in costs. The shocked customer reported their find to environmental health officers who found a major cockroach infestation
By Staff reporter info@asianexpress.co.uk
throughout the premises. The insects had invaded all areas of the takeaway, including food preparation areas. Various utensils and bits of equipment used to store, prepare and cook food were found to be in a filthy condition. Cooking pans were found with dead cockroaches covering and inside them. It quickly became apparent to officers that cleaning hadn’t been a priority as the premises were dirty throughout. They found a significant build-up of food debris with dirt sticking to the floors, walls and work units. The floor of the walk-in chiller was covered in a layer of organic matter. Councillor Mark Dobson, executive member for the environment, said: “Munchies took the idea of a stuffed crust pizza to a whole new level. “It beggars belief that any business
owner could knowingly allow conditions to get so bad and put the health of unsuspecting members of the public at such risk. “Our environmental health officers can offer their wealth of experience and expertise on all aspects of food safety to help businesses keep on the right side of the law. “However, where businesses fail, we can and will prosecute to ensure the safety of residents.” Justice of the Peace, Bill Baker said: “What we have heard this morning has been a stomach-churning horror story. “We are due to have lunch in threequarters of an hour but I think we will skip it now.” Leeds City Council regulates all food businesses in Leeds and environmental health officers regularly inspect restaurants, takeaways and other eateries to ensure they comply with strict food safety legislation.

March of the Robots Leeds looking to purchase the world famous Cygan
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
A year-long Leeds celebration by Playful Leeds called ‘March of the Robots’ kicks off with an audacious bid to bring a 1950s cult robot called Cygan, weighing more than a tonne, to Leeds. Playful Leeds has launched a fundraising campaign in an attempt to source enough funds to purchase Cygan, the world famous robot, when it goes up for auction in London on 5th September 2013. They hope to bring the Italian designed robot to Leeds making it the first city in the UK to have an official Robot in Residence. Cygan, standing at 8ft tall, was created in the 1950s by Italian designer and inventor Dr Fiorito to be a domestic helper. It was remote controlled, could crush cans with its fist and could even dance. Cygan captured the imagination of the public back then, and still has a cult following to this day. When Playful Leeds found out that Cygan was to be auctioned at Christies they devised a plan to claim him for the city of Leeds as a robot in residence for the year-long celebration of all things robot-related in the city. The hope is to collectively raise the funds to be amongst the bidders on 5th September, when Cygan is auctioned at Christie’s in London. The guide price is £8,000£12,000 and the campaign target is £15,000 to include fees and Cygan’s travel expenses. Playful Leeds hopes to restore Cygan back to its original glory, in order for potential hosts including city schools to host visits from the friendly robot over the next 12 months. Playful Leeds is in conversation with organisations excited by the idea, and who have reinforced concrete floors and high ceilings. If the group is unsuccessful at auction, the money pledged will be held in trust to build a robot for Leeds in partnership with the people of Leeds, supported by The University of Leeds. The University is amongst the high profile backers in the campaign to tempt Cygan to Leeds, the UK’s 3rd largest city for manufacturing, a place where technology continues to play an enormous role. Emma Bearman from Playful Leeds said: “People have long been fascinated by the thought that robots can make our lives easier be that domestically in the home or through streamlining manufacturing. The recent launch of the world's first talking astronaut robot Kirobo, the Toyto designed Space Companion with a mission to understand how machines could emotionally support isolated people over long periods is testament to our continued interest. As robots and robotics will be such a key part of our future, we'd rather welcome them than run and hide behind the sofa.”

£3million investment to ease flooding A new programme aimed at reducing water damage will begin this Autumn
FLOODING: Calderdale has been badly affected by flooding in the past
September 2013 - 1st Edition
By Staff reporter info@asianexpress.co.uk
The Upper Calder Valley is going to see the benefits of a £3 milion programme to ease the impact of flooding in the area this coming Autumn. After last year’s devastating floods in Walsden, Todmorden, Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd, Calderdale Council and the Environment Agency (EA) have begun to draw up plans to improve defences at more than 20 locations across the area. One of the first areas to be targeted as part of the two year minor works programme will be Mytholmroyd where vegetation in the river channel will be cleared. Other locations where designs are being developed include Walsden, which was badly hit by flash flooding at the end of last month, Dobroyd Clough at Todmorden and Erringden Hillside at Hebden Bridge. Flooding hotspots on the main A646 road through the Upper Calder Valley will also be targeted. The Environment Agency has completed inspections along Walsden Water to assess damage caused by the flash flood on 29 July when 17 millimetres of intense rain fell in just 15 minutes. The EA is also looking at what else will need to be done to strengthen defences in the area. The Council has commissioned a study to investigate solutions to the flooding that took place at Kershaw Road and Clough Road in Walsden. Kershaw Road was destroyed in
last month’s flood and Council teams spent two weeks helping residents and businesses with the clean up. Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Environment, Cllr Barry Collins said: “Although Clough Road isn’t an adopted highway, we have cleared away uplifted tarmac and brought in stone to give temporary access from the railway along Clough Road to Kershaw Road. “The study to investigate solutions will determine the extent of future works required. A recommendation will be put to the Council’s Cabinet as soon as the facts are established. “It’s really important that residents and businesses know what to do to prepare for future flooding and what to do after a flood. The Council and the Environment Agency have useful information, advice and guidance on their websites.” Oliver Harmar, the Environment Agency’s Flood Risk Manager for South and West Yorkshire, added: “The EA and Calderdale Council are working together with local flood groups and other organisations to develop affordable and technically feasible solutions to deal with flooding from all sources. We are drawing up detailed designs for a variety of flood alleviation measures across the Calder Valley. “Local knowledge and the feedback we have received from the Calder Valley communities worst affected by flooding means we can target specific locations where the money spent will have the greatest benefit.”

THUMBS-UP: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan outside the First Direct Arena in Leeds
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan speaks exclusively to the Asian Express about his forthcoming performance in Leeds By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
After an electrifying sell-out show in London, superstar Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has made the trip up north to make history as the first ever Asian performer at the new First Direct Arena in Leeds. Rahat, the famous nephew to the late and world-famous Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, aims to recreate the infectious energy he and his Qawwali band generated within our shores last year. “In the UK, there are different audiences with different tastes but they are all eager to listen to music flavoured with Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, so hopefully I’ll be able to fulfil this,” he said. “I’m honoured to be performing across the UK including being the first South-Asian artist to perform live in the Leeds’ First Direct Arena. “Following the great success in
London, I can’t wait until the 15th, I’m eager to see all my fans.” Rahat will be playing the 13,500capacity £60m arena in Leeds on Sunday 15th September, as part of a European tour. The show follows sellout dates in London, Manchester and Birmingham last year which pulled in over 30,000 fans. Rahat’s genius lies in many forms but his ability to maintain his Qawwali and Sufi traditions alive whilst remaining one of the most popular Bollywood singers sets him and his concerts apart from the rest. Fans will not only be treated to a heartfelt awakening with serene melodies like “Teri Meri” but will also be compelled by the infectious energy created by “Tere Mast Mast Do Nain”. The Bollywood classics lined up will be reinforced by Rahat’s latest Bollywood hits, powerfully intertwined during the evening, to create a memorable performance for all to enjoy.

Payday lenders blocked Councils in West Yorkshire join together for single biggest initiative in the country against predatory lenders
By Anush Ansari
anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Six Yorkshire councils have joined forces to block the websites for all known payday lenders in the country. The councils which represent 2.4 million residents and employ 67,000 employees have taken the step of blocking the websites of all known payday lenders from all council terminals – including those in libraries and face-to-face customer contact centres as well as all staff computers. This agreement follows on from the announcement last month that the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has referred the whole of the payday
lending industry to the Competition Commission because of concerns about the practices used by the industry and the impact on vulnerable citizens. All councils in West Yorkshire – Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield - along with City of York Council have taken the step to block the sites of almost 200 high interest payday lenders. Although a few other councils across the country have also taken this step, today’s announcement represents the single biggest initiative in the country in the campaign against what are described as predatory lenders. Anyone attempting to access Payday lender websites on a council computer will instead be redirected
to an information page which will provide information about sources of money and debt advice and alternative sources of affordable credit and banking services through local credit unions. It has been estimated that across the six councils' geographic areas there are likely to be somewhere in the region of 78,000 residents who currently have payday loans. The payday lending industry has been one of the fastest growing parts of the financial services sector over the past five years and there are fears that it is having a significant impact on the lives of many people. National charity Step Change have reported that 42 percent of young people aged between 16 and 25 who come to them for help have
debts to payday lenders. Councillor Keith Wakefield, leader of Leeds City Council and chair of the Association of West Yorkshire Councils said: “We are seeing more and more evidence of people finding themselves with serious debt problems after being enticed into taking out loans from payday lenders. “A recent survey of 113 lenders by the Citizen’s Advice Bureau found 9 out of 10 applicants were not asked to provide proof that they could afford the loan. It can be no surprise that this sort of irresponsible lending leaves many people facing serious hardship. This is an industry which must face greater controls over their operations, but, until they do, we feel
SERIOUS: Councillor Keith Wakefield says more needs to be done on irresponsible lending by loan sharks
that it is necessary to take this action.” Leeds City Council is also organising a major national conference in Leeds on 25th October, devoted entirely to the subject of high cost lending and how to develop strategies to help citizens who find themselves trapped in a spiral of unsustainable debt. Speakers at the conference will include prominent national figures from the advice sector, the Department for Work and Pensions, Member of Parliament, Church of England and the world of sport. Final details of the conference will be issued during September.

Youth group work to better local community GARDENING: The group helped by tidying up the communal gardens
By Staff reporter info@asianexpress.co.uk
Youth group Kumon Y’all have been working together to improve garden facilities in a local retirement scheme. Members of the group now visit the Walker Street retirement home scheme in Thornhill Lees regularly, and have been helping with gardening work, offering massages and beauty therapy treatments and joining in with exercise classes and activities on the complex. Retirement scheme coordinator Jeanette West has nothing but praise for the work the group do for their elderly community. She said: “The young people are an absolute godsend. They worked so hard in the gardens, doing all the weeding, clearing away any rubbish and some planting. “They seemed to really enjoy it and the residents loved having the young people here.”
On their website, Kumon Y’all explain that their group consistently work to find problem areas within their local community, it says, “We say we can and we will do something about it. If we join together we can tackle the problems and overcome them. “If we want a crime free, well educated, healthy and socially cohesive society then we will have to work hard to achieve it.” The youth team also work to tackle issues such as drugs, crime and anti-social behaviour as well as general health, education and housing. Farook Yunus, group leader from Kumon Y’all, said: “Around 20 of us went down to do some gardening and had a really great time. “There was so much laughter and the atmosphere between the young people and the residents was electric. “We’ve become almost like family, and it’s lovely that something so little can bring a smile to people’s faces.”

Eshish-shisha baby! Fast growing trend of electronic shisha smoking without the risks of toxins a growing rave
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Aston Merrygold of JLS, Nicola Roberts of Girls Aloud, DJ King – Tiesto and even Cheryl Cole – they’re all at it… “All at what?” I hear you asking… smoking the electronic shisha of course! In a landscape where smoking shisha has fast become the socialising scene for many British Asians over the last decade, many are debating the health risks
affiliated with traditional shisha smoking. The fast growing trend, particularly amongst the younger generation now, is the electronic shisha. The Eshish and Luli products are the world’s first portable electronic shisha smoking device and imitates, beautifully, the shisha smoking experience. What’s better is that it can be smoked legally in areas where cigarette-smoking bans are in place. The Eshish and Luli come in an extensive selection of
flavours and use a small battery-powered element to heat ‘e-liquid’. When you inhale, you activate the electronic circuits contained within the electronic cigarette. This initiates the vaporisation process where the liquid is heated, and thus turned to vapour. When this is exhaled, it has the appearance of real smoke but of course, it is still just vapour. The main ingredients are propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine, with added flavouring.
READER COMPETITION Lushisha, the company which is the official and authorised global stockist of Eshish and Luli products have given the Asian Express prizes to give away to lucky readers.
To enter simply answer the question below and email to competition@asianexpress.co.uk by 13th September 2013 for your chance to win.
QUESTION: What are the two main ingredients used in the Eshish and Luli products?
What is Propylene Glycol?
Propylene Glycol is an odourless, colourless chemical that is used in pharmaceuticals such as toothpaste, mouthwash, and cosmetics as well as a flavour enhancer used in the baking of cakes, donuts and other bakery items. It is listed as “generally recognised as safe” (GRAS) for use as a direct food additive by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has been used in asthma inhalers and nebulisers since the 1950s.
What is Vegetable Glycerine?
Food grade vegetable glycerine is 99.7 percent pure with the remaining .03 being water. Vegetable glycerine is sweet but is metabolised differently than sugar and does not raise blood sugar levels. It is found in foods that are advertised to be lower in carbohydrates. Vegetable glycerine is used in the place of alcohol in food extracts and even though it is sweet it does not promote tooth decay and is even used in the treatment of certain skin and gum disease.

www.asianexpress.co.uk SOUTH POLE: Captain Ibrar Ali will race with Prince Harry as part of the fundraising expedition
September 2013 - 1st Edition
Yorkshire amputee to race to South Pole with Prince Harry
Yorkshire solider, Captain Ibrar Ali, who lost his right arm in a roadside bomb attack while serving in Iraq, is preparing to race to the South Pole. The expedition will raise money for wounded British service personnel and Prince Harry, who is Expedition Patron, will be part of the team. Captain Ibrar Ali was badly injured while serving in the Yorkshire Regiment in 2007 but 18 months after the attack, he returned to Iraq with the Army and last year spent six months in Afghanistan. The 36-year-old is also taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro before setting his sights on the South Pole challenge. Captain Ali said: “I am continuously humbled by what the great British public are willing to put themselves through to raise funds for Walking With The Wounded. I feel honoured to be a part of the amazing group of people on this expedition. “The expedition to Kilimanjaro will help me to prepare perfectly for the South Pole Allied Challenge with the long days of trekking, dealing with the altitude and of course being a part of a team that will work together to overcome the daily challenges that we will face.” The Walking With The Wounded Challenge to scale Mount Kilimanjaro will start on 27th September and will take nine days. Later this year Captain Ali and five
other Brits will be racing the South Pole, competing against teams of wounded service personnel from the US and the Commonwealth of Nations, including Prince Harry. The teams will have to come more than 208 miles (335km), endure temperatures of -45C, 50mph winds, vast crevasses, crumbling glaciers and fierce snow storms while pulling pulks, custom built sledges, which weigh in excess of 70kg. Representing the UK, Team Glenfiddich will race against their American and Commonwealth counterparts over a distance of 335km, endure temperatures of -45C, 50mph winds, vast crevasses, crumbling glaciers and fierce snow storms while pulling pulks, custom built sledges, which weigh in excess of 70kg. This attempt to be the first team to reach the South Pole in what is set to be the largest modern day expedition of its type. The teams will fly to Antarctica in November and aim to reach the South Pole by about December 17. This extraordinary challenge follows on from the charity’s record-breaking trek to the North Pole in 2011 and last year’s expedition to Mount Everest. It will raise funds and awareness for Walking With The Wounded’s core objective: to fund programs which equip wounded service personnel with the skills required to gain civilian employment.

‘A new conversation in Kirklees’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A landmark report setting out the ground for a new relationship between a council and its citizens has been launched. ‘A new conversation in Kirklees’, by the Commission on the Future of Local Government, follows up a series of community groups and informal meetings which took place over summer. The initiative went out into local communities – to meet both individuals and groups – to get them talking about cuts to funding, the changing nature of councils, and what the relationship between the council and citizen might look like in the future. The first round of conversations ran from late May to early July
2013 and involved online tools and discussion, nine open events across Kirklees and a series of 140 community-based sessions with local groups and people where they live. In total it has engaged with around 8,000 people, resulting in the publication of this report by the Commission on the Future of Local Government and endorsed by the RSA. Cllr Mehboob Khan, leader of Kirklees Council, said: “Following the important work of the Commission on the Future of Local Government last year, in Kirklees we have taken the work of the commission and built on these foundations to explore in practice changing the relationship between the people who live in an area and their council.
“It is clear that things must change – councils cannot continue to do what they have done in the past, given the levels of cuts in funding being experienced we need to find a new way forwards. “Traditional consultation often fails because it does not help build understanding or take advantage of the opportunity to build relationships between people who care about their communities and want to help. “I believe that as leaders of local communities we have to help people face the challenge and find opportunities. Rightly – as councillors - we believe in the power of politics, but sometimes we need to take a step back from party politics and work together with everyone in our communities for the wider benefit of all.”

UK house prices rise at fastest annual rate since 2010 H
ouse prices in Britian rose for the seventh month running in August. Halifax, the UK’s biggest mortgage lender, said that prices are likely to continue increasing “gradually” for the rest of the year, The Lloyds Banking Group offshoot said the annual rise in house prices of 5.4% was the highest rate since June 2010 and compares with just 1.1% in March this year. Halifax housing economist Martin Ellis said: “Economic improvement and low interest rates, supported by official schemes such as Funding for Lending and Help to Buy, appear to have boosted housing demand in recent months. Nonetheless, relatively modest economic growth and belowinflation rises in earnings are likely to act as a brake on the market. Overall, house prices are expected to rise gradually over the remainder of the year.” The average price of a house across the country is now £170,231. Chancellor George Osborne’s Help to Buy scheme began in April and its second phase, which includes state-backed mortgage guarantees, is due to come in next January. Housebuilders have already reported a strong rise in demand for newly built homes under the first phase of the scheme. Ellis said: “Housing market activity is also on an upward trend with the number of mortgage approvals for house
purchases — a leading indicator of completed house sales — 10% higher in the three months to July compared with the previous quarter after allowing for seasonal influences.” According to LSL Property Services, the number of firsttime buyers has risen by 45% over the last 12 months. Howard Archer, chief economist at Global Insight, agrees with Halifax that house prices will increase gradually in the final months of the year but warns there may be risks ahead. He said: “There is a mounting danger that house prices could really take off further out, especially as a shortage of new properties for sale could be a significant factor in some areas, notably London and the South East. While an improving housing market is helpful to growth prospects, it is vitally important for stability and longer-term growth prospects that a new housing price bubble does not emerge. “Should the housing market gain substantial momentum over the coming months, the case for limiting or even eventually pulling the plug on the Help to Buy mortgage guarantee scheme that is due to start in 2014 will look ever more compelling, even if the Government may find this politically difficult to do.”

e are seeing an increasing number of complaints being made against banks by customers who claim to have been mis-sold interest rate protection products, known as “Base Rate Swaps” or “Interest Rate Swaps”. What is an Interest Rate Swap? Interest Rate Swaps are Contracts that allow a customer to swap a variable interest rate loan facility for a fixed rate for a certain period. The products are commonly known as Swaps because the Bank and customer exchange or swap loan repayments. If interest rates rise, the Bank covers the increase in repayments for the customer. If rates fall, the customer pays the difference in the increased amount to the Bank. The upshot of this is that lower interest rates make the Swap much more expensive to service whilst higher interest rates result in a saving to the customer. What’s the problem? The record fall in interest rates has exposed many customers to the dangers inherent in such products with many now struggling to meet payments. Many customers who entered into Swap Arrangements claim the risks of low interest rates and exit fees were never explained to them before they entered into the Swap. What can be done? The redress available will vary in each individual case, but the aim will be to put the customers back in the condition they would have been in had the breach of regulatory requirements not occurred. Potential redress would include cancelling the

arrangements and refunding all payments or transferring the customer to a more suitable product. If a customer would have bought a different kind of product from the one recommended, they might be offered partial compensation depending on the losses they have suffered. However no compensation would be given if the customer would still have bought the same product anyway or the customer has suffered no loss. It may also be possible to claim consequential losses such as overdraft charges and additional borrowing costs, in the event that those losses were caused by the regulatory breach and were reasonably foreseeable at the time of that breach. What should I do if I have been a victim of mis-selling? Generally, customers have six years from the date of the sale of the product within which to pursue legal action against the Bank otherwise their claim will be statute barred and they will lose their right to pursue a claim through the Courts. Customers who purchased their Interest Rate Hedging products in 2007 will be approaching that deadline and it may even have passed. In view of the strict time limits involved, urgent legal advice should be sought. Luke Patel and Lindsay Dixon are hosting a ‘Breakfast with Blacks’ seminar dealing with the topic of Base Rate Swaps on at our Leeds based offices on 10 October 2013. unique matrimonial web portal launched by ProfessionalMuslim.com assists single, educated Muslim professionals in finding a compatible marriage partner to complete half of their faith as prescribed in Islam. Muslim professionals are finding it increasingly difficult to meet suitable and compatible matches for marriage. This common concern forms the very premise for ProfessionalMuslim.com’s unique concept which differs from other matrimonial or networking websites: we believe that a lifetime of marital bliss actually begins with finding compatibility on all levels, both personal and professional. For those Muslims who choose to pursue a professional vocation, a traditional arranged marriage may not always be an option. Often living away from their families due to work and given that Islamic rules on courtship do not permit dating, Muslim professionals frequently find prospects for the right partner for friendship, love and happiness within marriage via other means to be at best, limited. ProfessionalMuslim.com encourages members to be honest and sincere about themselves and what they seek in a future spouse in order to maximize responses from other members with the same objectives and optimize the search for a life partner. ProfessionalMuslim.com recognizes that finding the perfect marriage partner requires far more than subscribing to a typical matrimonial site and filling out the usual online forms describing oneself and one's ideal match. Instead, ProfessionalMuslim.com focuses on the various dimensions of what matters most – compatibility. The site features a series of multidimensional compatibility questionnaires addressing important aspects such as religiosity, personality, family, education and career. A detailed member profile allows the user to include a variety of information such as interests and activities, key qualities sought in partner and other personal details, all
viewable at a glance. Given the modern trend towards social networking among professionals, a built-in social network feed also enables members to upload photographs and videos and post status updates. ProfessionalMuslim.com takes pride in being culturally aware of and sensitive to the importance of relationships and marriage for Muslim professionals around the world and firmly believes that finding someone compatible is essence to one’s future happiness. Indian rupee hits record low The Indian rupee hit a record low and shares slumped on Tuesday after parliament's approval of a $20 billion (12.9 billion pounds) plan to provide cheap grain to the poor renewed doubts about the government's resolve to control spending ahead of elections due next year. The alarm over India's fiscal deficit eclipsed an announcement by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram that the government had approved infrastructure projects worth 1.83 trillion rupees ($28.38 billion), a step aimed at reviving economic growth and shoring up investor confidence. Instead, the rupee plumbed
new depths after Chidambaram spoke and his promise that the government will meet its fiscal deficit target also failed to turn sentiment. “I have already said that 4.8 percent of GDP and the absolute number that was indicated in the budget is a red line. The red line will not be breached,” Chidambaram told a news conference. “I think we’ll simply have to be patient, be firm, do whatever is required to be done, and the rupee will find its appropriate level.” Traders said the currency market is working in a climate of fear as repeated efforts by authorities to turn the markets
around fail to have a holding impact. The rupee has lost more than 16 percent against the dollar so far in 2013 - making it the worst performer by far among Asian emerging market currencies tracked by Reuters - despite frantic attempts by the government and central bank to support it and repeated comments by the finance minister that the rupee is oversold. The partially convertible rupee slumped to a record low of 66.075 to the dollar, despite central bank intervention to ease the pace of the decline, surpassing its previous all-time low of 65.56 hit
last Thursday. Shares also slumped, sending the benchmark BSE index (.bsesn) down more than 3 per cent and benchmark 10-year bond yields up nearly 20 basis points. Indian markets have been caught in a downward spiral since May as the prospect for a tapering off in the Federal Reserve's period of cheap money has exposed India's vulnerability among emerging markets marked by a record high current account deficit, a troubling fiscal deficit and the weakest economic growth in a decade. Yet, despite measures to address these concerns,
Mobile banking risks revealed by FCA Fraud and mistakes on fiddly keypads could create problems for people who use banking services on their mobile phones, a regulator has said. Consumers transferring money should be careful to enter correct details on the smaller keypads says the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). They might also be using mobile banking late at night, which could affect their concentration when moving funds. The FCA is studying
the potential risks to customers of mobile banking. The review is looking into a sector that involves all sorts of payments to individuals and firms using mobile phones, tablet computers or other handheld devices. Mobile banking also involves apps that allow customers to check their account balance, view statements, and check the latest activity on their account. 'Exciting development' The FCA will publish a full report into mobile
banking in early 2014. However, its early findings are aimed at giving guidance to providers, and explaining the potential risks to consumers. It found that there were concerns about fraud, with thieves attempting to place malicious software or viruses onto devices to access people's accounts. Accounts could be hit by problems with IT systems. The FCA also said that there could be errors made by consumers who were not
familiar with the new technology. "Mobile banking is an exciting development in financial services, with increasing numbers of consumers attracted to the convenience of banking on the move," said Clive Adamson, director of supervision at the FCA. “With the market growing, now is the right time for us to take stock and, as part of the FCA's forward looking approach, to ensure that consumers are appropriately protected.”
including a slew of steps to attract dollar inflows, Indian policymakers are struggling to instil confidence among investors. “It's not out of choice, but out of compulsion that the finance minister is announcing so many things," said G. Chokkalingam, managing director and chief investment officer of Centrum Wealth Management in Mumbai. “The trinity of the fiscal deficit, slowing growth and an unstable currency is hitting us badly. In addition to these, the government has passed the food security bill which may put fear in the mind of rating agencies.”
Facebook to pay $20m over ‘Likes’ advertising A judge has approved a deal in which Facebook will pay $20m (£13m) for using members "likes" as endorsements for advertisers. The money is to be shared between lawyers, internet privacy rights groups and Facebook users who filed claims in the class-action lawsuit against the social media giant. US district judge Richard Seeborg reasoned that the sum, a small fraction of the billions being sought in the case, was fair given the challenges of proving Facebook members were financially harmed or that signalling "likes" for products did not imply some form of consent. Facebook's Sponsored Stories programme used members' names or likenesses to endorse ads without getting their permission, according to the legal filing. Judge Seeborg estimated the size of the class represented in the suit as 150 million people, but noted that so few had filed claims that there was ample money in the settlement fund. “The settlement as a whole provides fair, reasonable, and adequate relief to the class, in light of all the circumstances, including the low probability that a substantially better result would be obtained
through continued litigation,” the judge ruled. The settlement calls for Facebook to modify its rules to give members greater control when it comes to how their information is used regarding Sponsored Stories. “Sponsored Stories, in Facebook's view, does nothing more than take information users have already voluntarily disclosed to their ‘friends’, and sometimes redisplays it to the same persons, in a column that also contains more traditional paid advertising,” the judge wrote while detailing his decision. “Plaintiffs faced a substantial burden in showing they were injured by the Sponsored Stories.” So few Facebook members have filed claims that those negotiating the settlement proposed paying out $15 to each person and having enough cash left over for lawyer fees and routing funds to internet privacy groups, according to the ruling. An original settlement rejected by the judge recommended the same pool of money, but allocated none of it to Facebook members. The lawsuit was filed in early 2011 after Facebook launched its Sponsored Stories advertising programme.

Courageous teen cuts tape at Birmingham’s latest project By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Malala Yousafzai, the 16-yearold education activist and campaigner for the rights of women and girls around the world, opened the Library of Birmingham last week, marking the end of the £188million project. The teenager made headlines last October when she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in Pakistan and has been an avid
crusader for educational rights across the globe since. Before unveiling a plaque that will be placed in the floor of the Library’s foyer, Malala talked about the need to speak up for the 57 million children who are out of school. “We must speak up for peace and development in Nigeria, Syria and Somalia,” she said. “We must speak up for the children of Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, who are suffering from terrorism, poverty, child labour and child trafficking ….. Let us help them to read books and go to school.
“Pens and books are the weapons that defeat terrorism. “I truly believe the only way we can create global peace is through educating not only our minds, but our hearts and our souls.” Addressing ‘honourable and distinguished guest and fellow Brummies’, she also spoke about what Birmingham, ‘the beating heart of England’, means to her. She added: “The teachers of this town strived to rehabilitate my educational career, and the great people of this city gave me great moral support.” She was presented with a
membership of the Library by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Mike Leddy, and a copy of The Philosophy Shop edited by Peter Worley. Before the opening, Malala placed the last book on the shelves of the new Library, her own copy of The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho. The first book to be placed on the shelves was The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. Also speaking at the official opening were Cllr Ian Ward, Deputy Leader of Birmingham, Francine Houben, architect, and Ed Vaizey MP, Minister for Culture.

A disgruntled customer of British Airways thought up a unique way of complaining to the international airline giants last week. Hasan Syed, a businessman form the UK, purchased a promoted tweet to complain against the airline which allegedly failed to respond to his father's lost luggage. Instead of putting out a normal tweet, Hasan Syed, opted to pay for a promoted tweet, meaning it would appear at the top of anybody’s search which included British Airways. The tweet read: “Don't fly @BritishAirways. Their customer service is horrendous,” was commented upon by thousands of Twitter users, many of whom were in support of the message. Syed said that he decided to highlight British Airway's customer services following a trip his parents made from Chicago to Paris at the weekend, during which his father lost his luggage. Promoted tweets are generally bought by advertisers who want to reach a wider audience. Experts believe that using promoted tweets in such a manner could represent a new trend. Reacting to Syed's complaint, British Airways said: “We would like to apologize to the customer...the bag is due to be delivered today,” British Airways had told the BBC.

The Prime Minister has outlined plans that will see Britain helping to scale up the medical response to future potential chemical attacks in Syria. The PM has announced an additional £52 million in UK aid for victims of the civil war in Syria where 6.8 million people are in need, bringing the total British commitment to £400 million. Much of the new money will go towards medical training and equipment to help civilians targeted by chemical attacks. The Department for International Development will be leading on the delivery of the additional aid. Mr Cameron also called for international action to secure humanitarian access to war zones as aid convoys can’t get through to areas under siege. He told a meeting on the
fringes of the G20 Summit in St Petersburg: “On chemical weapons, a strong response must be about saving lives as well as preventing future attacks. “Britain's new support will include scaling up medical response in the face of chemical attacks, through the training of medical and civil defence teams, protective equipment to assist decontamination and medical supplies including antidotes and response medicine. “We have also challenged the world to respond to the call from the UN to make up the shortfall in humanitarian assistance by the time the world gathers in New York at the United Nations General Assembly later this month. “We have led by example and started the drumbeat.” Though David Cameron has ruled out any prospect of
agreement over Syria at the G20 summit, saying that Russian president Vladimir Putin remains ‘miles away’ from the truth of Bashar Assad's use of chemical weapons on his own people. Mr Cameron confirmed that deep divisions over Syria were voiced despite evidence of nerve gas sarin found by US and UK scientists. Mr Putin is still far from accepting the regime's responsibility for the August 21 attack which killed hundreds of civilians in a Damascus suburb. Speaking at the G20 meeting in St Petersburg, Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Because we were never going to reach agreement at this Summit, I decided to focus on something we could do: building the strongest possible international commitment on humanitarian aid.”

"This G20 was never going to reach conclusions on Syria," said the Prime Minister. "The divisions are too great. The Russian position that, as Putin has said, if it is proved it is Assad he will take a different view but he is fairly clear that it is the opposition, is miles away from what I think the truth is and miles away from what lots of us believe."

Sikh channel fined for ‘encouraging crime’ By Staff reporter info@asianexpress.co.uk
A Sikh TV channel has been handed a £30,000 fine after a controversial debate was held on air whereby guests supported an assassination attempt on a former Indian Army General. Sangat TV were issued the fine after commentators on the channel had stated their approval of an incident which saw Lt Gen Kuldeep Singh Brar have his throat cut by unknown assailants. Ofcom said the programme was ‘likely to encourage or to incite the commission of crime or to lead to disorder’. 78-year-old Lt Gen Brar was in charge of the controversial military operation to clear Sikh militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, northwest India, in 1984. According to Indian Government official figures, 400 people were killed in the attacks, however Sikhs around the world have claimed that the actual number is much higher, with 1,000s of pilgrims killed. Ofcom said satellite channel Sangat TV broadcast statements in a panel discussion programme, on 30th September last year, which 'were an indirect call to members of the Sikh community to take violent action against Lt General Brar and other
members of the Indian armed forces'. Following a viewer complaint, Ofcom requested a translation of the debate, whereby it was revealed that commentators on the show said: “If they [who assaulted Brar] were Sikhs, I congratulate them...Whatever nation [Brar's attackers] belong to, they will be our diamonds.”

Sangat TV's parent company, Regis 1, has since announced its decision to air fewer controversial debates in the future yet are likely to appeal against the fine. The channel's head of programmes, Amarpreet Mann, said: “Ofcom haven’t shown any kind of flexibility. They have failed to understand the feelings of the Sikhs. We will be contesting the fine.” Adding that anything more than a token fine would be "crippling" because it is a charity-based station, Mr Mann said: “We’ve not done anything wrong and it’s independent media. Everybody has a right to speak.”

More than one in three people blame migrants for lack of job opportunities SURVEY: Lord Ashcroft surveyed more than 20,000 people across the UK
‘Taking our jobs’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A new report published last week suggests as many as 36 per cent of people in the UK believe they, or a family member, are struggling to find work because of foreign workers. The survey, conducted by Lord Ashcroft, covered more than 20,000 people across the country. As well as the aggrieved 36 per cent, 60 per cent of respondents believed that immigration provided more
disadvantages for Britain than it does advantages. Former Tory party deputy chairman Lord Ashcroft said that his findings show that the majority of the British public felt the Government did not have “any strategy” for dealing with immigration. He said: “Whatever people’s view of immigration itself, few think any recent government has had any real grasp of it, or that any of the parties do today. “Politicians
PLEDGE: David Cameron and Theresa May want net migration from non-EU countries to be less than 100,000 a year by 2015
underestimated the size of the challenge, lost control of the situation, refused for too long to acknowledge that any problems might result and are now struggling but failing to cope. “Most do not feel there is any strategy for dealing with the number of migrants, either for their successful integration into British society, or for managing the effects they see or fear in terms of housing, infrastructure, jobs, the NHS, schools, or the benefits system.” Prime Minister David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May have already stated their intent, earlier this year, to reduce net migration from non-EU countries to less than 100,000 a year by 2015. More figures from the report also show that a staggering 77 per cent of respondents said they thought a dramatic reduction in immigration would reduce pressure on public services and welfare, making it easier for Britons to find jobs. Meanwhile, the Home Office “Go home or face arrest” adverts were shown to have 79 per cent of respondents in favour of the message, however just 17 per cent said they felt the policy would work. Likewise, 24 per cent said that they or their family had been denied access to housing or other public services because immigrants seemed to have been given priority.

Row over sacked dinner lady
SACKED: Dinner Alison Waldock ha lady of 11-years d complaints against a string of Muslim and vegetar her from concerned ian parents
anush@asianexpress.co.uk
The parents of a Muslim child at the centre of a row about a dinner lady who was sacked for serving pork to their seven-year-old, have filed a complaint to the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) on unfair reporting by the ‘Sun’. Zahid and Rumana Darr claim the reporter who 'broke' the story misrepresented their remarks to him. They say that they never gave the name of their child and that the article seems to suggest that the dinner lady was sacked on the basis of just this one incident. Dinner lady of 11-years, Alison Waldock, has maintained that said she “accidentally” gave Khadija Darr gammon at lunchtime at Queen Edith Primary School in Godwin Way after the youngster pointed to the dish on the lunch menu. A nearby teacher spotted the mistake and quickly swept the plate away from the child. The Darrs say they never made a specific complaint about the dinner

lady, nor did they ask for Waldock to be sacked. They just wanted to make sure it didn’t happen again. In fact it was the headteacher who had invited a number of other parents including the Darrs via email for a meeting about their halal/vegetarian meal concerns. Now it has been revealed that there had been repeated accusations against the dinner lady, both by Muslim and vegetarian parents. The Darrs want it clarified that neither they nor their daughter should be blamed for the subsequent sacking. The school’s headteacher Caroline Peet confirmed the incident was “not a one-off” and that Waldock’s actions had been treated seriously by employer Lunchtime UK, due to the significant number of children involved in the complaints process. Lunchtime UK operations director Peter McAleese said to the press: “Anyone losing their job is regretful. “But there was a full and transparent procedure that Alison went through - as well as an appeals procedure which she lost.”
Now the Darrs, who have four children at Queen Edith Primary want the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) to investigate the Sun's coverage of the story and their daughter. In the meanwhile, UKIP leader Nigel Farage, who has rallied valuable political support by vocalising the concerns of many voters about immigration and multiculturalism, has said that the sacking of the dinner lady was ‘outrageous’. Speaking on ITV’s Daybreak he said: “We've all made mistakes in our lives and in our jobs. “The reason that Alison's been sacked is that we're so terrified in this country of causing offence to anybody, particularly the Muslim religion. “I think actually what's been happening with this whole ‘politically correct agenda’ is lots of decent ordinary people are losing their jobs and paying the price for us being terrified of causing offence. “There was nothing malicious or deliberate in this, and this isn't just Alison, this is happening to scores of people every month up and down the country, she's just got the courage to come and talk about it.”

$6.6 billion loan for Pakistan
Pakistan only had enough to cover less than five weeks of imports in it’s State Bank By Anush Ansari anish@asianexpress.co.uk
The IMF's Executive Board has approved a $6.6 billion loan for Pakistan to support its program to stabilize the economy and boost growth while expanding its social safety net to protect the poor. The 36-month program under the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility aims at bringing down inflation and reducing the fiscal deficit to more sustainable levels. The program also
includes measures to help achieve higher and more inclusive growth, in particular through addressing bottlenecks in the energy sector. In a statement, the IMF said the three-year program should help Pakistan rebuild its reserves and prevent a crisis in the balance of payments. IMF loans generally come with conditions for economic reform and should encourage other donors to step in with more funds. Two top finance ministry officials in Pakistan announced the Fund's approval of a package in August, pending the board's decision and Pakistan's progress on fiscal
reforms. The new loan will arrive just in time. As of August, the central bank only had about $5 billion left in foreign currency reserves, enough to cover less than five weeks of imports. The Asian Development Bank, one of Pakistan's major lenders, estimates that Pakistan needs $6 billion to $9 billion to meet its obligations, including about $5 billion in outstanding debt on an earlier $11 billion IMF loan package. Pakistan averted a balance of payments crisis in 2008 by securing the $11 billion IMF
loan. This was suspended two years ago after economic and reform targets were missed. This time around, the government had to fulfill certain conditions set by the IMF before the loan could be approved, including slashing costly subsidies on electricity and sending out notices to 10,000 delinquent taxpayers. Pakistan has one of the lowest tax-to-GDP ratios in the world. The IMF wants it to do more to tackle rampant tax evasion by the wealthy elite. Pakistan gets $540 million immediately, and the rest will be disbursed after regular reviews of the program, the Fund said.

September 2013 - 1st Edition DOUBLED: The number of police casualties has doubled from the previous year
Afghan authority deaths rise Number of police deaths double following international retreat
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Shocking figures which were released last week show that police deaths in Afghanistan have more than doubled following NATO’s hand over of security forces in the country. NATO forces had been in Afghanistan since 2003, and after a ten year programme, proceeded to leave last year. However, critics have argued that the officials actually handed over the security responsibility to poorly equipped and poorly trained local security forces, which has now resulted in the total number of police deaths significantly rising. Speaking to the Guardian,
US and NATO commander, General Joseph Dunford, explained why the figures have increased so quickly. “I look at Afghan security forces development as really kind of three to five years,” he said. “That doesn't mean they can't do things today; I'm just talking about before they get to the standard where they may not need assistance and support any more. “There is a wide range of causes (for the rise of police casualties) – it's not just enemy activity,” he added. “Some of it reflects a very busy summer, but some of it also reflects a force that is still developing capability.” The country's new Interior Minister, Mohammad Omar Daudzai, said that 1,792 Afghan policemen had lost
their lives since March and more than 2,500 had been injured. These latest figures are double the number of a year ago. Likewise, civilian casualties in Afghanistan are up by nearly a quarter from the previous 12 months. Roadside bombs planted by the Taliban and other insurgent groups inflict the most damage, according to Daudzai. The situation illustrates the difficulties local forces face as NATO and American troops aim to exit the country by the end of 2014. The plan is to withdraw all combat troops but keep a residual force in the country to help train Afghans and carry out counterterrorism operations when needed.

Death sentence for British Grandmother
Latest appeal rejected for 57-year-old Drug Smuggler in Bali By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
An English grandmother has lost her appeal against a death sentence in Indonesia, after being arrested for attempting to smuggle cocaine into the country last year. 57-year-old Lindsay Sandiford, of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, was carrying £1.6million of the Class A drug, 4.8kg (10.6lb), when she was detained in Bali, in May 2012. Officials believed she was part of a major drug smuggling ring and the prosecution initially recommended 15 years imprisonment before a panel of judges later sentenced Sandiford to death by firing squad. Her latest appeal was turned down last week at Indonesia’s Supreme Court, where three judges cited that the district court and the high court had made the ‘right decision’. Following the dismissed appeal, the Foreign Office reiterated its ‘strong opposition’ to the death penalty and issued the following statement: “We will consider how to support any application for judicial review or clemency that Lindsay Sandiford chooses to make.” Adding: “We will continue to provide consular assistance to Lindsay Sandiford and her family at
this difficult time.” The UK Government had refused to pay for legal representation of Ms Sandiford and she has since raised more than £10,000 in public donations to fund her court costs. Ms Sandiford's case was taken up by the British human rights charity, Reprieve, earlier this year after they stated that drug smugglers had exploited her vulnerability by making threats against her children. Despite this, the Indonesian authorities ruled in favour of the initial judgment in the belief that Ms Sandiford was at the centre of a drug smuggling ring which brought cocaine into the island of Bali from the Thai capital Bangkok. According to a BBC correspondent, Sandiford may still have the option to file a further judicial review – ‘but only if she could present new evidence or show the judges in her case were negligent’. Three more Brits were arrested following the siege, none of whom have been issued a death penalty. 39-year-old Rachel Dougall, from Brighton, was released in May after serving one year in an Indonesian jail, whilst her partner 43-year-old Julian Ponder, and another Briton, Paul Beales, were sentenced to six and four years respectively.

• INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS • INTERNATIONAL NEWS DARK IS BEAUTIFUL: Actress Nandita Das hopes to deter people from skin lightening products
India’s backlash against skin lightening By Staff reporter info@asianexpress.co.uk
For years, Asian people have been using skin lightening creams and avoiding showing their true colour, but a new campaign hopes to change that. Skin lightening treatments are big business across the entire continent, and the market for them in India alone is worth around £432 million according to a report by ACNelson, even overtaking brand giant Coca Cola in sales. Indian actress Nandita Das is the face of new campaign “Dark is Beautiful” which she hopes will help people be more comfortable in their own skin. She recently put out a statement on her own website about how often she is referred to as “dark” or “earthy” in the press, as well as editors lightening her skin. Das also claims that it is much easier for actors and actresses to secure acting work if they have fairer skin.
Actress Nandita Das is leading a new campaign to help Indians feel more comfortable in their own skin She said: “I have often wondered why are we supposed to feel proud or ashamed of attributes that we are born into. I have done nothing to be born as a woman, a Hindu, an Indian or dark. “I have directors come to me and say ‘you will be playing an educated character from a higher class, would you mind lightening your skin?’ and I say ‘are you telling me that only lower class and uneducated women are dark?’ it’s such stereotyping and we keep perpetuating that. “It’s bizarre, the obsession we have in our country with fair skin. It’s really sad actually.” Treatment cream campaigns are regularly fronted with movie and
sports stars, and they are a regular feature of magazine pages, television screens and billboards across the country. There are lightening creams not just for facial and bodily use but also more specific areas such as under-arms and genitalia too. Anu Hasan, an actress and TV anchor, is also backing the Dark Is Beautiful campaign, and also believes that current attitudes are “ridiculous”. She said: “The world is full of people with a bias against dark skin, many of them dark skinned people themselves. Isn’t it time to wake up? “I am un-fair and I feel beautiful.”

Female Afghan MP kidnapped
New UK support for Pakistan people affected by 2012 floods Seeds, shelter and training from the UK will help more than 700,000 people in Pakistan recover from last year’s widespread floods, International Development Secretary Justine Greening announced. Over a million people in southern Pakistan are still living without adequate shelter, exposed to the elements and vulnerable to disease. The new UK support is providing 50,000 of these families with cash grants to buy building materials and training on how to build
houses which will resist future floods, such as waterproofing walls with lime plaster. Seeds, chickens, and training in farming skills are also being provided to over 690,000 people to improve the availability of food and fodder, and enable families to earn some money. In addition, the UK is closely monitoring this year’s monsoon in Pakistan and has already put in place emergency items near disaster prone areas, so that help can be mobilised quickly if needed. This includes emergency
shelter, solar lamps, and sleeping mats for 15,000 families. International Development Secretary Justine Greening said: “We have emergency supplies already in place for a fast response to this year’s monsoon. “In addition to providing crop seeds and training in farm skills to get people back on their feet, the UK is helping them build homes that will stand up to future flooding, breaking the vicious cycle of the annual rains.”
Farinba Ahmandi Kakar has been kidnapped by insurgents in a restive province south of Kabul, she is the first lawmaker to be abducted since the Taliban’s fall from power. Kakar represents the Kandahar province in parliament, and is the latest prominent female to be targeted. Officials claim she was said to have been celebrating Eid when she was forced from her car. Kidnapping is a growing issue in Afghanistan, and wealthy or prominent people, or their relatives, are taken and huge ransoms are demanded. Sometimes they are sold on to insurgents, by the Taliban themselves or their allies. Civilian casualties rocketed by about twenty five per cent in the first half of this year, with women and children particularly badly affected by growing violence, according to a UN report. Many have died on the country's increasingly violent roads. Air travel is limited to only a few cities and tickets are too expensive for the majority of Afghans, most people have
no choice but to risk their lives if they want to travel to see family and friends, or visit the capital. The Taliban attack government and military convoys and stop cars to search for employees of the administration or foreign forces, who they have declared legitimate targets, although they are considered civilians under international law. The main highway between Kandahar and Kabul, a vital commercial and civilian transport route, has been a focus of attacks. Last week, the Associated Press reported the bodies of eight people abducted from a bus were found with gunshots to their heads on the side of the highway in Ghazni. President Hamid Karzai has recently condemned the killings on the road, although he has not commented directly on Kakar's disappearance. Kakar is the first lawmaker abducted by insurgents since the Taliban's fall from power, although several have been killed.

Mosques labelled ‘terrorist organisations’ following 9/11 ‘They must work in coordination with Muslim communities rather than treating them as boogeymen’
CONTROVERSIAL: The labelling of New York mosques as ‘terrorist organisations’ has caused anger in Muslim communities
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
More than ten mosques and Islamic centres in New York were put under police surveillance following the 9/11 attacks after the New York Police Department (NYPD) labeled them as terrorist organisations. The NYPD launched the surveillances under the title, “terrorism enterprise investigations” whereby they were able to spy on imams as well as record sermons. A confidential NYPD document revealed how police also wanted to place informants on the boards at mosques and other organizations, to further infiltrate the peaceful establishments. Asked about the report, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended the tactics, saying they were only done to keep the peace. “What we do is we try to keep this city safe, totally consistent with what the laws require. We believe that we are compliant with those laws,” he said. Despite Mayor Bloomberg’s defence, the strategy has come under
scrutiny from a number of religious organisations in the country. Former Leeds based imam, Adam Jamal, is currently living in the US and was disappointed to hear about the news. He said: “Firstly, I’d like to point out that their intention was to exploit a loophole in the law so that they can increase surveillance on certain communities. Second, I feel that the proper approach is to work in coordination with Muslim communities rather than treating them as boogeymen out to get everyone. “In the long term this is a much healthier way to solve the problems.” Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York, added: “This is a new level of low for the New York Police Department. “As we were inviting C o m m i s s i o n e r (Raymond) Kelly and his leadership into our mosques — into our institutions — he was coming through the back door. Sarsour, whose organization helps new immigrants, was among about a dozen Muslim
community members calling for a federal probe outside police headquarters. “I literally saw that document and saw my organization’s name on it and I started crying,” said Sarsour. “I felt betrayed.” In reply, Commissioner Kelly, speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe”, stressed that the intelligence-gathering programs began after 9/11. “We follow leads wherever they take us,” Kelly said. “We’re not intimidated as to wherever that lead takes us. And we’re doing that to protect the people of New York City.” The news has also caused a storm on social media with many people expressing the disapproval of the surveillance project. On Twitter, Sam J Miller tweeted: “Another day, another reason to #ChangeTheNYPD: cops labeled mosques "terrorist organizations", whilst Pete Climb added: “This is a disgrace on us. The NYPD had no evidence to start spying on Islamists”.

the launch of Sazaa which went in straight at number one on the iTunes charts. It was yet another smash hit from Nafees following his worldwide smash hit 'bukhaar'. Nafees showed his diversity and style by working with urban producer/artist Mumzy Stranger whom himself is no stranger to the Asian music scene. The collaboration went down very well with listeners and the artists themselves were overjoyed with the success of the track. You can download the track which is now available on iTunes. The turnout of the event was as you can imagine a full house, with a lot of people actually being turned away at the doors. The artists met and greeted their fans that came from all across the UK to meet the guys and congratulate them on their success. Mumzy and Nafees then joined in and cut a cake that was kindly organised by the owners of the business. The pair then performed their single, Sazaa, with the whole crowd singing along to the track itself. Just before the night ended Nafees did his now trademark 'Harlem shake' which he has been doing with crowds all across the UK.

When it comes to acting, Nargis Fakhri has a long way to go to establish herself as a bankable star but one thing is for sure, her good looks are to die for. No wonder she has had her share of link-ups even though the actor is just one film old. First, Nargis was rumoured to be dating Ranbir Kapoor and then there were reports about her being married to Dhoom 3 actor, Uday Chopra. While Uday has openly expressed his fondness for Ms Fakhri over a social networking site, here’s sad news for the

The fuss around Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif's recent bikini act doesn't seem to die out soon. The gorgeous actress felt betrayed after the media encroached on her personal space by printing photographs of Ranbir Kapoor and her, on vacation. Kat was so upset over this issue, that she went on to write an open letter to the media. According to Katrina’s open letter, she is very upset since the pictures were clicked without her permission, that too when she was on a private vacation. "The pictures were taken while I was on holiday by someone who, in an act of cowardice, has shot

It doesn’t make sense to me. So I have no plans to get married,” said the Rockstar actor. And that’s just not it. The B-town brunette is also confident that she doesn’t need a man just to support her. “I want to be an independent woman. I will make my own career and money, so it’s okay if I don’t get married at all,” added the actor.
While many of Rishi Kapoor’s co-stars have been victim of his infamous mood swings, recently the veteran actor came down heavily on one of his fans. According to several sources, an old gentleman in his 60’s, followed Mr Kapoor inside the washroom at a party and asked for an autograph once the actor finished his
After giving a dose of their infectious on screen chemistry in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Kaminey, two ex-lovers will reunite once more for Ekta Kapoor’s upcoming production. Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapoor, who had set the screens on fire with their love making scenes in Kaminey, will come together again. The two have been linked repeatedly after PeeCee was spotted at Sasha’s house time and again. The two decided part their ways amicably right after PeeCee started developing a special bond with the mighty Khan of Bollywood. But now will the old flames be ignited again? Kumar Santoshi's movie Phata Poster Nikla Hero. But later, Ranbir was replaced by Shahid Kapoor in the film. Finally, Ranbir became a part of the real Dabangg director Anurag Kashyap's movie Besharam. Interestingly, Besharam has a Dabangg connection in it, and as per Ranbir, this will be his real Dabangg movie.
Actor Ranbir Kapoor got into trouble after he allegedly mocked at the BTown superstars Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan in the trailer of his upcoming movie Besharam. But, according to the recent sources, the Kapoor lad believes that Besharam is his Dabangg. According to a leading daily, Ranbir Kapoor was the initial choice for Raj
business. But what followed left everybody present on scene surprised. Instead of an autograph, the fan had to withstand Rishi Kapoor’s anger and the poor old gentleman had no option but to make a hasty exit. In fact, rumours go as far as saying Ranbir Kapoor was so furious that he used offensive language to shoo away his fan.
Khan turned down the offer to work with Tigmanshu Dhulia under Ekta Kapoor’s banner that has Priyanka Chopra in it, Shahid Kapoor was roped in to replace the Khan lad. Interestingly, Imran was keener to work in the Lootera director’s next untitled project rather than working with Ekta. Apparently, Imran has cited the mandatory ‘ohmy-dates-are-clashing’ excuse, but the truth seems to be that he is keen to play a Gujarati character in Motwane’s movie.
Turning over a new leaf?
Salman Khan is usually known to leave the sets as soon as he hears the words ‘wrap up.’ However, recently while shooting for a commercial in Bandra, Mumbai, he stayed back at the studio to check his shots, taking everyone by surprise. How sweet, no? What more, after seeing all the shots, he
thought that some of them were not up to the mark and demanded to reshoot them! He waited back for another three hours and shot them again. We wonder if Salman is only finding ways to distract his mind from the other distractions in his life or is he genuinely being human this time.

Bi-turbo power unleashed Mercedes announces S 63 AMG UK pricing and release date
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
One of the worlds most sophisticated car in the world has been handed over to the engineers at AMG in Affalterbach to create the new, 585 hp, S 63 AMG – set to arrive in the UK in November priced from £119,565. The most powerful high-performance saloon in the luxury segment aims to set new standards in driving dynamics, performance, refinement and technology. The hand built AMG 5.5-litre V8 bi-turbo
engine is twinned with an AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed sports transmission. It boasts an output of 585 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque and can accelerate from rest to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds with a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. Equipped with 19” AMG 10-spoke alloy wheels, the S63 AMG uses high-performance composite brakes fitted as standard along with unique AMG sports suspension based on the all-new ‘Magic Body Control’. Backing up the performance is the AMG sports exhaust system, providing a suitably thunderous soundtrack. The body styling
including all-new front and rear bumpers, aiding cooling and adding greater visual drama are joined by AMG specific side sill panels with silver chrome inserts. Innovative technology is a prerequisite with the launch of every new S-Class and the S 63 AMG is no different. There’s an impressive line-up of standard equipment too worth around £8,400. It includes the Driving Assistance Package, Front Seat Comfort Package, Panoramic sunroof, Keyless Go Package, the mighty Burmester Surround Sound System with SixDisc changer, Tyre Pressure Monitoring
System and Ambient Lighting. As with every AMG, there are options for customers to personalise their car further via the AMG Performance Studio. The Drivers Package (£2,760) de-restricts the top speed to 186 mph and secures the customer a place on an AMG ‘Power and Passion’ event so they can learn how to handle their car on the racetrack. Carbon Fibre can also further enhance the look of the car with the addition of the AMG Exterior Carbon Package (£5,000) while the AMG high-performance ceramic composite brake system can be added for £7,090.

Women choose their favourites Four-wheeled winners announced for ‘Women’s World Car of the Year 2013’

The Family Car category, for instance, included child-friendliness, storage space and value-for-money and individually. Chief Judge, Sandy Myhre of New

From there, a short list was formed to determine the finalists and from the finalist list judges choose their supreme winner and the podium finishers. She said The presentation of the trophies and certificates will this year take place in London at the beginning of October.

Continental voted best tyres It may come as no surprise really that Continental has won a coveted award, with the ContiSportContact 5 taking top spot in this year’s ultimate tyre test. The test celebrated the best of the best in the tyre market, highlighting exceptional performance, quality, safety, desirability and value. They are seen within the motoring industry as a stamp of approval offering motoring enthusiasts confidence when looking for their next tyre purchase.
With the ContiSportContact 5, Continental’s engineers have developed a tyre which is equally suitable for performance cars & SUVs and represents a significant on the progression s u c c e s s f u l ContiSportContact 3. With shorter braking distances in all weather conditions, excellent road grip, safety when cornering and reduced fuel consumption, the ContiSportContact 5 is available in a range of sizes from 17 inch upwards for
cars and 18 inch upwards for SUV. It is an original equipment fitment across a range of models, including the latest Mercedes-Benz A-Class, C-Class and Vauxhall Insignia with further SUV fitments on the BMW X5 and X6. Peter Robb, brand manager at Continental, said; “This latest win for the ContiSportContact 5 is an excellent endorsement for our product range and reiterates our investment in research and development, offering maximum safety when pushed to the limit.”
Government backs green car revolution The Government is backing electric and hydrogen cars for the long term – and it wants the UK to be a world leader in the design and manufacture of ultra low emission technologies. Take-up of electric cars has been slow over the last few years, despite a generous taxpayer-funded grant that cuts up to £5,000 off the list price of new models like the Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi I-MiEV and Vauxhall Ampera. But Transport Minister Norman Baker signalled the Government would continue to invest millions of pounds in promoting ultra low emission vehicles (ULEVs) – and set out a number of ambitious goals – in a new strategy published on 4 September. Baker said: “These are exciting times for the motoring industry as ultra low
emission vehicles are the future for road travel. Our vision is that by 2050 almost every car and van will be an ultra low emission vehicle, with the UK at the forefront of their design, development and manufacture. This strategy moves us up a gear in pursuing that vision.” As part of its goal to ensure every car on the road is carbon-free, the Department for Transport wants every new car sold to be an ULEV by 2040, for industry to set up a network of charge points and hydrogen fuelling stations, and a smarter electricity grid to cope with the additional strain that widespread take-up of electric cars would create. The strategy document states that the Government won’t “pick a winner” between plug-in electric and hydrogen cars – it will support both technologies
and let consumers decide with their wallets which is better. As a result, it will continue to invest in support of both electric and hydrogen cars, through consumer incentives, business support and investment in infrastructure. The Government has already committed to investing £400m up to 2015 in support of ULEVs, and a further £500m between 2015 and 2020. The Office for Low Emission Vehicles is now inviting the motor industry to advise on the most effective way for the second round of funding to be spent. The Government is also looking to set up a prize of up to £10m to reward the development of long-life battery technology for next generation of electric cars.
Record sales for 13-plate The 13-plate, introduced in March, has become the biggest selling new car plate since 2008, according to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The 13-plate had already clocked up 1,115,459 registrations by the end of July, with a full month still to go, the highest sale of a new plate since the 08-plate in 2008. The news comes as dealers prepare to sell the new 63-pate from this Sunday,
with the SMMT predicting sales of around 390,000 new cars, valued at £6bn, in September. “We have seen a strong performance from the new car market throughout 2013, with the number of cars registered increasing in July for the 17th successive month,” said Mike Baunton, SMMT interim chief executive. “Now we have evidence of consistent growth, we have raised our forecast for
2013 new car registrations to 2.216 million units, an increase of over 8% on last year. In line with this positive trend, we expect the new 63-plate to be very successful and for September registrations to provide a similar peak to that seen in March.” Traditionally the March and September plate changes collectively account for a third of all new car purchases.

Khunais Khan Living up to the ‘Khan’ label SUPERSTAR: Five-year-old Khunais Khan with his dad, Ismael
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Khunais Khan is not like many five-year-olds. He is a boxer. From the age of three, the youngster has taken a keen interest in the hard-hitting sport and has already begun training in the hope of one day becoming the next Amir Khan. The Boltonian boxer is Khunais’ idol and it was his performances, as well as fellow Brit David Haye, which first caught the attention of the little fighter when he was watching television with his dad, Ismael. “He used to stand in front of the TV and throw punches whenever boxing was on,” Ismael explains. “He was clearly interested in it from a young age and so we have just supported him all the way in the hope that he can make it far.” Khunais, from the Great Horton area of Bradford, currently trains in a gym in weekends and is already comfortably doing press ups and sit ups. As the youngest boxer in attendance, Khunais is
sparring with children who are two to three years older than him and showing abilities ‘far beyond his years’. The Home Farm School pupil may have just moved into his second year last week, yet it is his love of boxing which he hopes will be his career in the future. Ismael explains how the young ace is already taking on board advice regarding his career and future profession. He explains: “When he’s going to school he wants to jog rather than walk, and when his friends are out playing football, he’ll grab a skipping rope. “I’ve explained to him about dedication and commitment, about training right, sleeping right and eating right, and he takes it all on board. “His idols are Amir Khan and David Haye, and we met the latter once at a signing. We waited eight hours in line before finally getting to the man himself but Khunais didn’t mind he was just so excited to see him. “When we finally got to the
front, Khunais told David Haye he was a boxer, to which his idol replied ‘this guy is going to be a world champion’.” With David Haye’s words
of wisdom on board, Khunais now only wants one thing when he grows up, to live up to his hero’s prediction and claim a world title belt.
Tennis ace Leander Paes is fast becoming one of the top names in professional tennis and his latest success will be one he is likely to cherish for some time. Alongside Czech teammate, Radek Stepanek, the doubles team stunned the top seeded and favourite pair of Mike and Bob Bryan, in turn denying them the chance of a rare Calendar Grand Slam. No team has completed the feat, collecting all four Grand Slam titles in the same year, since 1951, and the team of Paes and Stepanek denied the Bryan brothers the chance of writing history. In a gripping contest, the
Indian/Czech pairing defeated their opponents 3-6 6-3 6-4 to advance into the US Open men's doubles final. The Bryans ran away with the first set but faced stiff challenge in the second, which Paes and Stepanek dominated to take the match to full length. Victory allows the pair to have their first shot of a Grand Slam title this year, having finished at best semifinalists at Wimbledon. Paes has history in the tournament having picked up US Open titles in 2006 and most recently in ’09.

RESERVE: The Brit impressed during the ‘Young Driver’ tests at Silverstone
Calado joins Force India New reserve driver for Formula One team Force India snapped up one of Britain’s most promising prospects last week, as they look to strengthen their position within the Formula One world. 24-year-old James Calado, from Worcestershire, was signed by the racing giants after impressing in the Silverstone ‘Young Driver’ test in July. He will now assume the role of third driver, or reserve, a position which current Force India driver, Nico Hulkenberg, held prior to his promotion. Hulkenberg occupied the reserve position in 2011 and 2012, whereby he gained valuable firsthand experience of Formula One. Likewise this year’s, now former, reserve driver, Jules Bianchi, narrowly missed out on the chance to step up to the top two, however has recently signed with Marussia. The English GP2 competitor finished fifth in the rankings last year and currently occupies the same position with six races to go this season. Calado is currently regarded as ACQUIRED: James Calado joins Sahara Force India
one of Britain’s finest racing prospects having also finished runner-up in the British Formula Three Championship in 2010 and the GP3 series in 2011. Force India team boss Vijay Mallya said: “This is a great opportunity for him to gain valuable experience of driving during F1 race events.” James Calado announced the news on his Twitter account at the start of September when he tweeted to his followers: “I can officially announce that I have joined forces with Sahara Force India Formula one Team as 3rd driver. “I will be driving the car at this weekend’s FP1 session at Monza. Thank you to everyone who has helped me achieve this dream. Thank you.” Calado’s opening duties will be in the first practice at this weekend's Italian Grand Prix and will then hopefully resume the role for the remaining races in Singapore, Korea, Japan, India, the United States and finally Brazil.
The Asian Transfer Window Foreign investors
changing the face of English football
As the Transfer Window slammed shut last week, clubs across the country were left counting their losses or drooling over the prospect of seeing their new signings don the ‘famous strip’. However, with soaring player prices and extortionate wage demands involved in more and more deals nowadays, it is the person at the helm of the club who is ultimately changing the face of English football. Premier League clubs spent a record £630million during the summer transfer window, £180million more than the previous record. Players such as Mesut Ozil (£42m), Willian (£30m), Fernandinho (£30m) and Eric Lamela (£30m) were imported from abroad and it is largely thanks to foreign investment that these players are arriving on British shores. Currently there are 12 foreign club owners in the Premier League, four of whom are of Asian descent: with powerhouse Manchester City, recently purchased Fulham, and new boys, Cardiff City and Hull City. In this latest window, the big spending Manchester club parted with over £100million to cater for five signings, whilst Cardiff (£33m), Hull (£13m) and Fulham (£12m) also strengthened their squads thanks to funds provided from their overseas chairmen. Whether this modern day investment is improving English football or slowly destroying the beautiful game, is a question which many cannot answer. However, one definite issue is the lack of talent from the Asian continent being brought into Europe’s elite leagues. The likes of Omar Abdulrahman have been linked with high profile moves in the past yet it seems the English public will have to wait a little longer to see the south Asian stars strutting their stuff in the Premier League. Cycling hero Bradford youth worker wins prestigious accolade
By Anush Ansari anush@asianexpress.co.uk
Naz Ali, who works for Bradford Council’s Youth Service, has won the British Cycling Yorkshire and North East region Local Cycling Hero award. The announcement was made on 4th September 2013 by British Cycling. Naz is based at Toller Youth Café, and works both in his own time and as part of his job to promote cycling amongst young people and local communities.
Through this work the Youth Service has managed to build up a hub of over 50 bikes – including tandems and adapted cycles – to persuade people who don’t have wheels of their own to have a go at riding. Naz organises trips in the UK and abroad for young people new to cycling, encouraging them to use it as a way to broaden their horizons. He has also organised numerous events for young people who are not traditionally drawn to cycling including
community groups, women and girls, young people with disabilities or behavioural issues, and young people from less privileged backgrounds. Naz has also worked with these groups to use cycling to change the way people perceive them. Naz said: “I’m delighted to win this award and would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to vote for me. “I’m passionate about helping under-represented groups get involved in cycling. It’s about fun, freedom and making a difference
PASSIONATE: Naz Ali shows dedication to encouraging under-represented groups
to your life. “The great thing about the award is that everyone who was nominated has won recognition for doing the best they can to promote cycling.” Graham Hutton, Bradford Council’s Youth Service Manager, said: “This award is a fitting tribute and recognition of the hard work and determination that Naz puts in to promoting cycling amongst young people. “The service has made great strides in widening the appeal of cycling to groups across the
district, and Naz has played a pivotal role in achieving that.” Dan Goodey, British Cycling recreation manager, works closely with Naz to promote cycling in Bradford. Dan said: “The awards have been a great success nationally, and given recognition to many of the local community initiatives that make such a big difference to people’s lives. “It’s great Naz has won this award because he’s successfully introduced cycling to people who would otherwise have been very unlikely to get involved.”
