Sisters convicted after admitting to laundering brother’s money The sisters of convicted drug dealers have been sentenced after admitting money laundering offences. Surriya Bi, 33, and Asia Bi, 38, both of Park Road, Rochdale, admitted money laundering (to the value of £40k each) at an earlier hearing. At Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on Tuesday 24th September 2013, Asia was jailed for 18 months and Surriya for 22 months. Under Proceeds of Crime Act legislation both women were also ordered to pay back £40,000 within

six months or face a further 12 months in prison and still be liable for the payment. The two sisters have two brothers who are both convicted drugs dealers. The women aided their siblings’ by laundering money made from their drug dealing. A thorough financial investigation was launched following the conviction of Mohammed Shafiq, 32 of Park Road - brother of the defendants who was jailed for six years in March 2011 for drugs offences. Specially trained officers reviewed the family’s accounts and discovered that each sister had purchased a house with large deposits. Surriya Bi bought a house on Park Road in December 2008 for £100k, paying a £40,000 deposit. She also owned an expensive car a 2007 Audi A4 valued at £16,000 that police have seized as part of the money laundering investigation. She also paid a 10 per cent deposit on a second house that she bought for £70k in November 2009 and had a collective balance in her bank accounts of £7,000. Asia Bi paid a deposit of £20,000 on a house she bought on Roch Street for £67k in March 2005. She paid £36,000 off the mortgage between May 2007 and June 2008 and has more than £7,000 in several bank accounts. Detective Constable Gerard Fisher, said: “Between them these two sisters have laundered £80,000: money provided by their brothers and their associates from drug dealing activities. “This has been a long, drawn out inquiry that we first started in 2010. “Along the way we took out top and street level dealers. Now we have secured convictions against those not involved in the drug dealing directly, but who have benefited financially from it.”

Khan had just recently released some funds from one of his properties to pay for the upkeep of the club. But is seems that the financial meltdown has just been too much for Khan to take any further. Now, the new boss, Mark Moore, who owns a Bradford-

based online bed and mattress company, has taken a vow to turn around the fortunes of the Super League club and has said that he aims to do this by running things with his head, not his heart. The news that Khan has severed ties with the club came twinned with the news that former Sports Minister and Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe stepping down as cochairman as will the club’s director Vipin Joshi. Mr Moore and the club’s general manager, Ryan Whitcut, are now poised to take joint ownership of the Bulls, subject to approval from the Rugby Football League. They have struck a deal with

Mr Moore has not disclosed any financial details of the sale due to a confidentiality agreement that was in place with Mr Khan. A local businesswoman is warning people about the dangers of email hackers after falling victim to the crime last week. Yasmin Ahmed, owner of the Beauty Hut, Bradford, had her work email accessed by an unauthorized third party on Monday 16th September and was subsequently locked out of the account. Now she is hoping to raise awareness of the incidents and protect vulnerable people from succumbing to the fraudulent requests. Ms Ahmed was made aware of her situation after receiving an email on her personal account from her business one. “It said it was urgent so I knew immediately that something wasn’t quite right,” she explained. “I opened it up and it said ‘I’m stuck in Cyprus, lost my phone and wallet etc, can you loan me £2,500, reply via email and I’ll tell you where to put it in’.

“I couldn’t access my Beauty Hut account so knew I had been hacked and then the phone calls began. “I must have had over a dozen clients call me and even more texts asking if I’m okay because my whole contacts list saved to my account had received this same email.” Ms Ahmed only uses the business account to send out emails to clients regarding special offers and did not store any bank details or invoices. However, this was not the main worry for the beautician who was more concerned about the recipients of the emails. She said: “There will be people in my contacts, and in others, that don’t understand the dangers of hackers like these and therefore may believe the content in the emails to be real. “I hope that my incident and the rising number of cases can help raise the awareness of this problem and ensure no innocent people are left out of pocket.” The beautician had a strong password on her account, made up of 15-16 characters, including letters and

numbers, yet was still hacked. Despite a number of attempts to change her password and regain access to the email, all efforts have proved futile. A statement on behalf of the Trading Standards authority warned all email users to be wary of such scams and be wary of any email requesting the transfer of funds. It read: “Names and other details differ depending on whose webmail account the scammers have hijacked, as do

the countries where the “friend” is supposedly stranded. The amounts of money requested in the messages may also differ. “In spite of such superficial differences, all such messages are versions of the same basic scam. Sadly, some people have become victims of this scam and lost money to these criminals. “As usual be wary of any email that you receive that asks you to send money, even if the message appears to come from a friend. Moreover, users of

webmail should make sure that their account details are as secure as possible, and be wary of possible phishing scams designed to steal their webmail account details. “Many people may have several webmail accounts, some of which are not often used. Thus it is a good idea to check all webmail accounts regularly to ensure that they have not been compromised and sending out scam email or spam that could appear to be from you.”

A university graduate from Keighley has turned his own life around to become a selfpublished author following eight years of living in a ‘gang’ culture. Shakeel Aziz, 30, left school at the age of 16 with no qualifications yet after escaping his turbulent lifestyle five years ago, the Yorkshireman has now written his first book, entitled ‘Dons of Bradistan’. The fictional novel follows the story of Nasser Ali, a teenager from Bradford who falls into the wrong crowd and becomes exposed to a notorious gang culture. After being sent to Pakistan for bad behaviour, the teenager returns years later with a mysterious parcel which is about to send his life into utter turmoil.

Author, Shakeel, who graduated from Bradford University last month with a BA Honours degree in Peace Studies and Politics, hopes the novel will not only entertain its readers but act as a warning about the dangers of such a notorious lifestyle. He said: “When I began writing initially in 2011 my idea was to do a self help book for teenagers. The aim was to provide guidance for the younger generation, specifically Asian Muslims, and highlight the dangers of gangs and a criminal lifestyle. “However, after starting the book I realised that teenagers, and the wider society never really

engage in 'Do's and Dont's' books so I developed it into an action crime thriller nonfiction. “Looking at my own life experiences and reflecting on others I have spoken with during youth work, it gave me the ability to write the book in a way which is reflective of the truth and also spreads an important message. “The underlying aim is to highlight how small misguided decisions can wreak havoc in a young person's life, whilst abandoning education is a hugely dangerous decision. “That’s how Dons of Bradistan became the gritty, hard hitting tale which it is, taking the reader into the surreal world of young Nasser.” The book is now available for purchase on Amazon, whilst a second novel, exploring the world of grooming, is currently in production and will hopefully be released in the near future.

A Bradford man is hoping to visit every mosque in the city after rediscovering his passion for Islam and has further plans to document his journey. 29-year-old Aminur Chowdhury, from Manningham, decided to take on the challenge of visiting all of the city’s 83 mosques before the New Year in hope of celebrating his chosen faith. Having worked for a recruiting agency in the past, the former Bradford Grammar School graduate will be aiming to complete the journey independently to highlight the ease of access to faith in the city. He said: “This adventure of mine is

all about purity, all about humility and all about beauty. It is to highlight just how far back the Asian community in Bradford goes in setting up great things such as mosques. “Three weeks ago I hadn’t visited any mosque for a long time, but when my friend and I saw young men handing out leaflets about the prayer, it made me realise how much of a communal thing religion is. “People should be aware that there are so many of these ‘places of worship’ in our city and if I can highlight that to Muslims, hopefully more of them will realise they can attend. “This is not about fundraising or being ostentatious, it is just something I hope to achieve. I’m sure councillors may have visited all of these remarkable establishments yet I don’t

want to do it because it is my job, I want to do it to experience the different Mosques and worships.” Mr Chowdhury visited Marrakesh a couple of years ago and said this experience was also a reminder of the importance of faith in communities. “When I visited Morocco the experience I felt there was amazing. I was overcome with spirituality and wanted to feel this way back home in England. Everybody was united in their ways when the call to prayer was made and it was great to see. “If people in the UK can just understand how easy it is for them to visit one of these remarkable buildings, it would be fantastic for the community.”

Two prisoners, found guilty of murdering a ‘model inmate’ earlier this year, have been told they will spend life behind bars. Gary Smith, 48, and Lee Newell, 44, were both handed whole-life sentences at Warwick Crown Court on the 23rd September for the murder of Huddersfield man, Subhan Anwar. The victim, who was serving a life sentence of 23 years after being

convicted of the murder of his partner's two-year-old daughter, was strangled with his own tracksuit bottoms in his cell at HMP Long Lartin, near Evesham, on the 14th February. Smith and Newell did not appear in court and were addressed via a live stream by Mr Justice Jeremy Baker who said he believed Anwar did not resist because he thought he was being taken hostage. “One of the most chilling aspects of this case was the almost complete lack of emotion shown by either of you after the killing,” Mr Justice

Baker said. “It is against this background that I have to consider whether the circumstances of this murder are such that it is one of those exceptional cases where its seriousness is of such magnitude so as to require the making of a wholelife order. “In my judgment you have both murdered others before, on this occasion you did so in a coldblooded manner, having deliberately lulled your victim into a false sense of security.” A family member spoke on behalf

of Anwar’s family and uttered his disbelief at the events in the high security prison. He said: “What happened in Long Lartin on the evening of Thursday 14th February will never be forgotten, should never have occurred and should not be allowed to happen ever again. “Injustice was done to Subhan Anwar from the start. We, as a family, still believe he was wrongly accused and sentenced for something he was innocent of. We believe there was no factual evidence in his case and he should

not have been in prison. “Prisoners and prisoners’ families should never go through what we as a family are going through. They should not be living in fear on a daily basis in a top security prison or any prison in UK. “We as a family are devastated by this loss. Our lives will never be the same. We have received many condolences, cards, letters and even a collection from other prisoners in Long Lartin. They, like us, are in complete disbelief, shocked and saddened by how Subhan was killed by Smith and Newell.”

Rising criminality amongst young Muslims and the untold damage to the communities due to the actions of a handful of men is a growing concern says the Council for Mosques (CfM). The organisations annual report raised concerns about Islamaphobia, debilitating health, poverty, failing education and the vulnerability of young Muslims to the culture of crime, drugs, and “heinous” sexual grooming. CfM president Mohammed Mushtaq, general secretary Zulfiqar Karim and chief executive Mohammed Saleem Khan tackled the issues within the report where discussions on sexual grooming and increasing criminality were of particular importance. A call has gone out to the Muslim community, Mosques and other organisations to raise awareness and continue to work hard to provide support to the authorities and the victims of this heinous crime. Mr Karim states that the grooming issue has tarnished the Muslim communities in Britain and said: “We as a community need work harder for better relations within our city with

other faith groups and people of other races. We must bring down barriers that have been created over many years and endeavour to have better understanding of our cities.” He added: “This is a societywide phenomenon which requires a collective and interactive action supported by sustainable resources. The vast majority of law-abiding Muslims find grooming and other forms

elements of both sides of the divide”. On the survival for families in this economic climate, the CfM said that the traditional strength of Muslim families is under a serious threat. It pointed out that family disharmony, stress, increasing debts and general decline in health and wellbeing has a dampening effect on the family unit. Mr Karim advised against

Reader reaction to drunk PIA pilot’s arrest at Leeds Bradford Airport Last week Pakistan International Airlines were once again at the centre of a controversial investigation after a ‘drunken’ pilot was apprehended during a pre-flight check at Leeds Bradford Airport. 54-year-old Irfan Faiz, from Pakistan, was charged with being four times over the legal alcohol limit when he boarded the Airbus 310 aircraft. ‘Famos’ Gram Flour milling company slammed after discovery of moth and dust infestation

Moth and caterpillar droppings were discovered on the floors of a Laisterdyke food plant during a visit from hygiene inspectors. The food milling company, Arcadia Food Industries, on Pawson Street in Bradford, prepares grains and pulses which are sold mostly through Asian grocery stores. Their most popular

household brand being the ‘Famos Gram Flour’. In July last year an environmental health officer found floors layered with waste flour, live moths and broken equipment stuck together with tape on a routine inspection. A second officer found that the premises had a considerable amount of moth infestation. Droppings were found in the cracks on the floor, in the walls and ceiling and on top of milling equipment. At Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court yesterday, Richard Winter, prosecuting on behalf of Bradford Council, said: “The factory floor was thick with flour dust on both visits. “The milling plant had been ill-repaired with clear sticking tape and live moths were found on the premises. “On the second visit, a significant moth infestation was found.”

Amjid and Sajid Baig, who did not appear at court, pleaded guilty to eight hygiene offences. The court heard that the two brothers agreed to close down the premises until the pest and hygiene problems were dealt with. After the hearing, Councillor Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council’s executive member for environment, said: “We will do everything we can to ensure that food businesses in Bradford are operated with the highest standards of hygiene in place. “We are always willing to work in partnership with, and advise, food business owners how to achieve the required standards, but if they ignore that advice and continue to operate from dirty premises and use poor hygiene practises, we won’t hesitate to prosecute. “We are glad of the support of the courts to help us make sure that consumers face no risks from food produced or processed in Bradford.” Mitigating for Arcadia Food Industries, Richard Wright QC said that the mill had since undergone a deep clean, and had passed a Council inspection on 6th September this year.

A Bradford Primary school, which was all but destroyed following a devastating arson attack a decade ago, is now celebrating becoming an academy amid a host of other awards. The Iqra Academy, in Manningham, was named ‘Primary School of the Year’ by the Times Educational Supplement in 2012 and

held a special ceremony last week to celebrate becoming an academy. Rated as Outstanding in every aspect in the latest OFSTED report, the school has been a success story for the local area since opening their doors in 2000. Students and teachers took part in an assembly, documenting the history of the school and providing entertainment through a special dance performance. Bradford Lord Mayor, Khadim Hussain, was also present alongside

members of the school board and parents, to perform the official ribbon cutting of the latest addition to the school premises. Parwaiz Bashir, Chair of the school, was delighted to see how far the school had progressed and hopes the success will continue for the foreseeable future. He said: “Today is another part of the journey where we can now decide on how we can continue to improve and do the best we can for our children. The children have

More than three weeks have passed since the passing of Nazim Din in Leeds, yet questions still remain following the actions leading up to his death. Mr Din collapsed and died just outside his family home in Wortley on the 28th August, following the arrest of one of his sons, and an alleged push by a police officer. An investigation was launched by the Internal Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) following the death yet the family have since been left waiting for answers and ‘waiting for justice’. The grandfather of seven’s funeral was finally held at the Bilal Mosque, Harehills, on the 6th September following three separate post-mortems. Thousands of mourners turned up on the day to pay their respects before he was later buried at Cottingley cemetery. The Grasmere Court resident required assistance to walk and was, allegedly,

knocked to the DIED: ground by officials as Nazim Din they were placing passed away one of his sons in the last month following the police van following arrest of one allegations of of his sons criminal damage. Mr Din’s family claim Nazim Din was simply trying to tell the authorities that they ‘had the wrong son’; however he was pushed out of the way and subsequently fell to the floor, where he remained, unattended, for more than 20 minutes. Family friend, Mahmood Yousaf, explained the current situation, and hoped that the matter would have been resolved by now. He said: “We have been told that an inquest has been begun but we have obviously been grieving lately so have not had contact with the police yet. “They have said they want to come and see us and hopefully this will happen soon.

“We know whose fault it was and we know there is nothing that can now be done to bring Nazim back. However, to not even haven been offered an apology I don’t think is right. Somebody must take responsibility for their actions.” Mr Din is survived by his wife, five children, seven grandchildren, his mother, brother and four sisters.

Tackling abuse through music

Young people aim to tackle domestic abuse in teenage relationships By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk

Young people in Bradford are using film, photography and music to raise awareness of domestic abuse as an issue amongst their peers. A music video entitled ‘STUCK in Chains’, which will be available on You Tube, has been written, filmed and produced by young people. They identified domestic abuse within young people’s relationships as an issue that affects them but which can go unnoticed or unchallenged. The video addresses the impact of domestic abuse from the point of view of young people, through rap music and film, and highlights where young people can find help and support. It will be launched during Bradford’s Safeguarding Week on Monday, 30 September at 5.30pm. The launch event will include a screening of the video, live performance of the track, and speeches by young people involved in the project. The initiative has been supported by Bradford Council’s Youth Service and Bradford Safeguarding Children Board. Nola O’Neill, Bradford Council Youth Worker, said: "We really hope that this video and track will reach out to young people who are on the receiving end of an abusive relationship, or who are hurting someone they love, and encourage them to talk to someone they trust and seek help.” Jason Baker, who co-wrote the lyrics and co-performs, said: "We want young people who are victims of abuse in relationships to know where to go for support. We want them to feel better knowing that they are not alone and that there are people who can relate to them and who care. "We want to spread our message through music because people listen to music all the time and it can influence how they think.” A number of national surveys highlight the impact that domestic abuse can have in young people’s relationships, the wide variety of ways in which it can take place, and that it often goes unreported.

Conor Butler, who directed the video, said: "My passion for filming and music meant that when the opportunity to get involved with the STUCK project came about I jumped at the chance to do something different with a serious subject matter. "During researching for STUCK I spoke to people and watched a lot of related videos, learning what people go through. This got to me emotionally, and I feel good that the video we have produced will raise awareness and really help people.” The video will be available to organisations such as schools and youth clubs to raise the issue of relationship abuse between young people as part of discussions in a supportive environment. Sofia Tsanou, who sings on the track, said: "We want young people to understand there are different types of abuse in relationships, it’s not just physical, there is emotional abuse as well. "Understanding emotions is hard, and we all need to know how to talk about them. Being close to someone can bring up lots of complicated feelings, no matter what type of relationship you are in. "Whatever your situation, find a positive outlet for your feelings, don’t hurt others or yourself.” Nick Frost, Independent Chair of Bradford Safeguarding Children Board, said: "Domestic violence can blight young people’s lives, and it can seem very hard to escape. This brave music video is a creative way of raising the issue amongst young people, and also gives the message that help is at hand for them, and it is a cycle they can break.” Cllr Ralph Berry, Bradford Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: "This is a very difficult issue which these young people have taken on, and they deserve great credit for getting this important message out there. The use of the music video in schools and in youth services will hopefully give other young people a greater understanding of this issue and where they can get help if it affects them.”

Hammerson, the retail developer behind Victoria Gate in Leeds, has this week received approval of its £130million development by the city council’s plans panel. The formal decision by councillors at Civic Hall marks an important next step towards construction work starting on the 37, of retail space in Spring 2014. Previously known as Eastgate Quarters, phase one of the Victoria Gate development is set to generate 2,700 construction employment opportunities, as well as more than 1,500 retail and hospitality jobs when it opens in Autumn 2016. As well as housing more than 30 retailers, the development will anchor a 24,000m2 flagship John Lewis store featuring a striking façade that draws on Leeds’ proud textile heritage. The John Lewis store will also link to the existing Victoria Quarter in an elegantly designed two street arcade and include a multistory car park for more than 800 cars.

‘exceptional young man’

TRIBUTE: Flowers at the scene of the fatal crash

Two weeks have passed since a fatal car accident resulted in the death of a popular Bradford man and tributes are still being made to the victim. Mohammed Rabanawaz Sultan, 26, died at the scene of the crash on Queens Road, Bradford after his Volkswagen Passat collided with a tree on Saturday 7th September. Mr Sultan, of Toller Lane, Bradford, was the sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead shortly after the accident. Bradford Councillor Imran Hussain was a close family friend of the victim and explained how big of a loss Mr Sultan was to the

whole of the community. He said: “He was a model young man – exceptional person. I think he made a real contribution to society and will be sadly missed by friends and family alike. My thoughts are with them. “He was always out making a contribution to society, always going out of his way to help others in any way he could. He was clearly a very popular character in the community, as shown by the hundreds of people who attended his funeral earlier this month. “I’ve known the family for years now and my thoughts are with them at this time.”

The Give a Gift initiative was a huge success last month with hundreds of toys being donated to local causes. The Leeds General Infirmary and Martin House children’s hospice were the recipients of the gifts, donated to the Hamara centre, Leeds, during Ramadan. Hanif Malik, CEO of the Hamara Centre, was delighted with the projects final outcome and was overwhelmed by the response to the appeal. “We had hundreds and hundreds of gifts and toys donated to the cause which was an absolutely terrific response,” he said. “It was a fantastic communal effort, with the Muslim community showing their generosity throughout the month of Ramadan. Charity is an integral part of our faith and it showed with the Give a Gift initiative.” He added: “To see the response from the kids themselves that was the best part of the day for me; seeing smiles on the faces of the kids, some of whom were celebrating their Eid in hospital, was fantastic. “Parents were also delighted with the project...it is a difficult time for any parent in that sort of situation so it was good to be able

to offer some sort of support through gifts for their children.” Wendy Haigh is a trustee at the LGI and was overwhelmed by the number of presents donated to the appeal. “It’s been absolutely marvelous,” she explained. “All the hard work they have put in and the children have absolutely loved it today. “We have never had anything like this before, not to this extent. It’s overwhelming what the Muslim community has done here. “Children will now remember this occasion rather than their stay in hospital. It’s been like a Christmas day for them really, I think that’s what the project hoped to achieve and I think that is exactly what it has done.” Likewise, Martin House representative, Sarah Tarpey added: “We were overwhelmed by your generosity and cannot thank you enough for the donations of toys and gifts. Thank you for caring enough to do this for our children and their LGI Trustee Wendy Haigh families.”

Nasheed artist Zain Bhikha builds self confidence in young people

An influential voice captivated youngsters at a Leeds-based community project recently at the Hamara Centre in Leeds. As part of the Role Model Series, which aims to bring inspiring and successful professionals to the youths of Leeds, songwriter Zain Bhikha was roped in through Skype. Zain recorded his first album in 1994. His experience as an artist has grown tremendously, increasing his exposure in his country of birth, South Africa, as well as globally. Known as a pioneer in the ‘Nasheed’ genre of music, where, as one of the first English Islamic singers, he opened the door for many other artists. Zain’s albums have been launched in many countries including the United Kingdom, North America, Malaysia,

France, Turkey, Holland, India, The Middle East, and Australia. He has performed live in cities across most continents and has become a household name when it comes to spiritual music. Zain had been eagerly anticipating his session with the young people in Leeds. He introduced himself to the young people who were waiting to hear Zain sing live after hearing one of his songs on YouTube. He shared his journey with young people. He talked about growing up, singing, his parents and mentioned his career and on-going projects. Then he shared one of his songs live. This part was definitely the icing on the cake as the young people were glued to the big screen in awe of the performance. A master class in vocal tuning, Zain treated the group to some of his most successful songs including ‘Heal The World’ (Zain’s remake of

Growing up in Johannesburg and having made something of himself helped the youth believe that self-belief and determination can make a huge difference. The impact he had on the young people was very positive as many of the attendees are from diverse backgrounds, and the Role Model Series has brought them together. ollowing the success of my two recent articles on the dangers of concussion in sport causing CTE and where the liability could lie with clubs and governing bodies, I wanted to share a third and final instalment in this series which questions where liability on a player –v- player basis could come into play. If we compare two incidents (one from the professional ranks and one from the amateur) with the same facts the outcomes are very different. Gloucester prop Nick Wood, just 73 seconds into the recent game against Saracens, stamped twice onto the face of Jacques Burger. Wood received a red card and a likely ban of 9 weeks from the RFU’s disciplinary panel. Rhys Garfield playing in the amateur Welsh leagues was jailed for 15 months for stamping on an opponent’s head back in 2006. Just last year an amateur rugby player Jack Weston was jailed for six months after he punched an opponent so hard during an on-pitch row over a tackle that he broke his jaw. Contrast these facts with Leicester’s Manu Tuilagi who, a season earlier, violently assaulted former Northampton Saints winger Chris Ashton with a flurry of punches and was subsequently banned from all competitions for 5 weeks. The RFU's disciplinary officer Judge Jeff Blackett said at the time: "This sort of incident is very damaging to the image of the game and there is no place for this type of

This statement raises the question as to why so few players have been prosecuted outside the laws governing their particular sport. Criminal proceedings are generally reserved for the most serious situations as discussed above. In 2009 Everton striker Victor Anichebe settled out of court for a six-figure settlement in damages after instigating legal action over a tackle from Kevin Nolan that left Anichebe unable to play for 11 months. The Latin phrase ‘volenti non fit injuria’ means ‘no injury is caused to a person who consents’. Therefore if you consent to the possibility of injury and you are injured then you cannot claim you have been wronged. This is a complete defence for a claim for negligence. So should the laws of the land be left on the touchline? Should consideration be given to the importance of protecting players from serious injury balanced against the reasonableness of finding another player liable? The case law surrounding these instances tells us that violent acts will trump an injured party’s consent. Where there is difficulty in application is across the spectrum of sports. What players will consent to in boxing, cage fighting and rugby is far greater than what players will consent to when they take to the field for a football match or game of cricket. A family from London is appealing for an Asian bone marrow donor to step forward and help save the life of their sixyear-old son. Rayaan Siddiqui was diagnosed with a rare immunodeficiency disease called

HLH in May, a disease which only effects half a dozen children each year in the UK. The youngster is currently being treated with chemotherapy and steroids but ultimately his disease can only be cured through a bone marrow transplant. There are currently thousands of people on the bone marrow register; however, before

someone can donate their bone marrow, it must closely match that of the person who needs it. Currently, certain ethnic communities are under represented on the bone marrow register meaning it is more difficult, in situations likes Rayaan’s, to find suitable donors. The Siddiqui family are now urging people of Asian background (Pakistani, Bengali, Indian, Sri Lankan, and Mauritian) to register in a bid to find a match for their son. A statement on behalf of Rayaan’s mother and father, Ghazali & Navida Siddiqui, highlighted the urgency required for a donor to come forward. “Up until eight weeks ago Rayaan was a fit and healthy six-

year-old boy, doing all of the fun things that kids of his age do,” they wrote. “At the beginning of May he started getting fevers which were constant and continued unabated for two weeks. Over that period, the GP’s kept telling us that everything appeared fine with him, and that he should bounce back. “After two full weeks of fevers we took him to A&E where we got the same message of nothing being obviously wrong with him. They took a blood test and immediately realised that Rayaan was very ill as all his blood counts were very low. “At the end of three weeks he was diagnosed with a rare immunodeficiency disease called HLH…he was so ill that he had to be transferred under emergency ambulance to Great Ormond Street ICU, where he remained on a ventilator for a few days. “He has improved

considerably since that time; he is being treated with chemotherapy and steroids but ultimately his disease can only be cured through a bone marrow transplant. None of his immediate family are a donor match and we are therefore searching for an unrelated donor on the British bone marrow registry. “This is what this appeal is about today. SHAMEFUL: 41-year-old Shaheda Lorgat appeared at Preston Crown Court for stealing £21,000 from Blackburn College

A woman from Blackburn who fraudulently spent money on a college’s credit card, has been jailed for 12 months. Shaheda Lorgat, 42, of Mossdale, previously pleaded guilty to 19 counts of fraud by abuse of position, which took place w o r k i n g whilst she was working as a purchasing officer at Blackburn College. Although she revealed her face in court, she kept it hidden from Press photographers under

a niqab. Police sources revealed a rising trend among Muslim women for wearing the full veil outside court to escape scrutiny. Neighbours of Lorgat said she rarely wore a niqab in public and pictures on her Facebook page show her without a veil. The case comes at a time of increased public debate over Muslim head-dress, following the decision by a college in Birmingham to scrap a ban on veils amid protests from students. Lorgat’s fraud came to light in February last year when a member of staff noticed discrepancies on the college’s credit card. Between 17th July 2008 to 17th January 2012, Lorgat used the college’s credit card to the sum of over £21,000, spending the money on a trip to Alton Towers, holidays, paying for personal solicitors bills, renovations and repairs on her

prescription bathroom, sunglasses and food shopping. Lorgat, who claimed she started using the credit card following the breakdown of her 20-year marriage, voluntarily removed the niqab before entering the dock. Speaking after sentencing, PC Anita Whittle from Blackburn Police said: “I am pleased with today’s sentence, especially given the amount of money that Shaheda Lorgat spent on Blackburn College’s credit card which was there to be used for things that benefit the college and its students. “I hope that today’s sentence shows that fraud of any kind will not be tolerated, and those who think that it’s acceptable to commit this type of crime will be brought before the courts.” Lorgat was given a 12 month sentence for each of the 19 offences which will run concurrently.

Born into education ‘Late for his first day at school’

A primary school teacher from Essex had the surprise of her life last week after giving birth in the classroom a day before her maternity leave was set to start. Diane Krish-Veeramany went into labour whilst working at the Manford Primary School and subsequently gave birth on the premises. The 30-year-old teacher was only at 39 weeks when she gave birth to her baby boy, Jonah; just 20 minutes after contractions began. With paramedics unable to get to the scene in time, it was left to teaching assistants Dita Gojnovci, Chris Sword and Sam Mustafa to help deliver the child, whilst taking directions from paramedics over the phone. Head teacher, Tina Jacobs, had phoned for an ambulance when it became apparent Mrs Krish-Veeramany was going into labour but the healthy 9lb

boy arrived before the paramedics had time to arrive. Speaking to the Daily Mail, the delighted mother explained how she had never imagined such a circumstance could happen to her. She said: “Everyone who has had a baby knows you try and plan these things in your head but everything happened so quickly, it was nothing like I had imagined. “It was so perfect, he’s completely fine, I’m completely fine, and I’m grateful because otherwise I would have had it in the back of a car.” She added: “I intended to work until the week before but I didn’t dream I would have to have my baby in a classroom. “I’m still in shock, I really am, I can’t believe I had him at school. There was so much hype; all the children were so excited. “His dad said he was in such a hurry to get here but he still late for his first day at school.” The school has now named the room Jonah was born in after him in remembrance of the historic day.

The Geneva-based Global Fund - the world's biggest donor of funds to fight the three infectious diseases - said earlier this month it needs $15 billion (£9.4bn) over the next three years to begin bringing them under control. Britain's pledge, which is dependent on other donors dedicating enough to reach the $15 billion goal, is the secondlargest by any government so far. The United States has asked for $1.65 billion a year for the Global Fund in its 2014 budget.

Man sentenced for abusing a boy online A man who used a pseudonym online and sent lewd messages to a teenage boy has been sentenced. Michael James Lacey, 25, of Avril Close, Reddish pleaded guilty at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court to inciting a boy to engage in sexual activity. He was sentenced to a three-year community order and three-year supervision order. He has also been issued a Sexual Offender's Prevention Order and ordered to sign the Sex Offender’s Register for five years. The victim, a 15-year-old boy, started receiving messages on Facebook from someone who appeared to be friends with someone the victim knew. The friendship request was accepted, and Lacey started to send messages of a sexual nature. He then asked for the victim’s BlackBerry messenger details. Here, the messages became increasingly lewd and explicit. The victim tried to defriend and ignore Lacey, but the abuse continued. Eventually the boy told one of his teachers about what was happening, and the police were called. Following a thorough police investigation, Lacey was later identified and arrested. Funerals of neurosurgeon’s wife and three children won’t happen until second post-mortem The father of three children who were killed in a house fire along with his wife has said their funerals will not take place until a second postmortem examination is completed. Shehnila Taufiq, 47, her daughter Zainab, 19, and two sons Bilal, 17, and 15-year-old Jamil, died in the blaze at their home on Wood Hill in Leicester on Friday September 13. Dr Muhammad Taufiq Al Sattar, who is currently staying with friends in the city, says he does not know when he will be able to bury his family due to the investigation into their deaths. He said the last fortnight had been “extremely difficult” for him, but added his faith in Islam had given him strength. “It was God’s plan to take the life,” he said. Police have charged 18-year-old Kemo Porter, of Browning Street, Leicester with murder over the fire, which began shortly after midnight in Leicester's Wood Hill. He was remanded in custody at Leicester Magistrates' Court. Further arrests have also been made in connection with the deaths. At the time of the fire, Dr Taufiq was in Dublin, from where he travelled to spend three weekends out of four to see his wife and children who were living in Leicester. He spoke about the moment he was at Dublin airport that he was told by police that his wife and three children had died in the fire. “As a neurosurgeon I know we deal with life and death every day so it was in my mind, something which is beyond your control.” Dr Taufiq said it had been too distressing for him to step foot in the family home, which was gutted by the fire. Dr Taufiq plans for his wife and children to be buried in Ireland, where he said he will continue to live and practice his faith.

Pakistani Christians protest over bloody church bombing Angry Christians protested across Pakistan on Monday to demand better protection after a devastating double suicide bombing at a church killed more than 80 people. The attack on All Saints church in the northwestern city of Peshawar after a service on Sunday is believed to be the deadliest ever to target the country's small Christian minority. Christians demonstrated in towns and cities across Pakistan, including Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar, demanding better protection from authorities. A Muslim man was killed in Karachi when scuffles broke out at a Christian protest outside a mosque, police said. In the city's eastern neighbourhood of Korangi, police used tear gas and fired aerial gunshots to disperse protesters, who set fire to a house and other properties. More than 600 protesters blocked a major highway in Islamabad for several hours during the Monday morning rush hour, burning tyres and causing long tailbacks, and later about 2,000 people gathered to protest outside parliament. In Peshawar, about 200 demonstrators took to the streets, smashing windows at the main Lady Reading hospital, where many of the victims were treated, and blocking the main Grand Trunk road. In front of All Saints church, more than 100 people chanted slogans demanding justice and attacking the national government for failing to protect Christians. And they had harsh words for cricketer-turnedpolitician Imran Khan, whose Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf (PTI) party runs the provincial government in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The death toll from the blasts rose to 82 on Monday, according to medics, with about 130 in total wounded. Senior Peshawar police official Najeeb-urRehman said security around churches in the city would be stepped up, but survivors of the bombing

spoke of their fears of further violence. The small and largely impoverished Christian community suffers discrimination in the overwhelmingly Muslim-majority nation but bombings against them are extremely rare. The 400 or so worshippers were exchanging greetings after the service when the bombers struck, littering the church with blood, body parts and pages from the Bible. The walls were pockmarked with ball bearings that had been packed into the bombs to cause maximum carnage in the busy church. Sectarian violence between majority Sunni and minority Shiite Muslims is on the rise in Pakistan but Sunday's bombings will fuel fears the already beleaguered Christian community could be increasingly targeted. A faction linked to the Pakistani Taliban on Sunday claimed the attack, saying it was to avenge US drone strikes on Taliban and Al-Qaeda operatives in the country's tribal areas along the Afghan border. But on Monday the main spokesman for the umbrella Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group said they were not responsible, adding that it was "an attempt to sabotage the atmosphere" of proposed peace talks. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has called several times for talks with the Taliban and two weeks ago won backing from the country's main political parties. But speaking in London on Sunday he said the government was "unable to proceed further" with talks following the church attack. Pakistani Christians, who make up just two percent of the country's 180-million population, often lead a precarious existence, many living in slum-like "colonies" cheek-by-jowl with Muslims and fearful of allegations of blasphemy, a sensitive subject that can provoke outbursts of public violence.

Pakistan earthquake One person has died, and eight others are injured following a massive earthquake in Southern Pakistan earlier this week. Measuring 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale, the earthquake hit the remote southwest province of Balochistan on Monday 23rd September. The town of Awaran suffered the only fatality, despite the size of the quake suggesting that many more could have been killed. With a depth of approximately nine miles,

the quake struck 43 miles northeast of Awaran and 71 miles northwest of Bela, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Mud-walled homes tumbled in Awaran, according to Latif Kakar, director of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority in Balochistan, yet devastation could have been a lot worse. The tremors lasted for a total of two minutes whilst aftershocks could be felt as far away as Karachi, 275 miles away from the main point of impact.

Fatal Philippines floods Heavy monsoon rains continue to cause deaths across the Northern Philippines, with many more people reported as missing. Most of the latest victims were children and many were killed by landslides set off by the rain in the province of Zambales on Luzon, the largest island in the archipelagic nation. At least 10 of the 16 people killed in the town of Subic were aged 12 or younger. An 84-year-old man died of hypothermia in nearby Castillejos

India's oil minister shied away from introducing comprehensive energy subsidy cuts, instead calling on his countrymen to embrace car pooling, buses and cycling as well as staggered working hours in a bid to curb fuel consumption. The struggling Asian economy - the world's fourthlargest user of energy - is battling a weak rupee that has increased the price of oil products as economic growth has halved to 4.4 percent from the 8-9 percent seen in the boom years. Delhi is also seeking to rein in a record current account deficit that is in part fuelled by energy imports. A falling rupee also boosts inflation and the

wholesale price index measure of inflation, the benchmark for the country's central bank, rose to a six-month high of 6.1 percent in August. M. Veerappa Moily told a news conference on Tuesday he hoped to save $5 billion (3 billion pounds) from fuel conservation measures even as he shied away from substantial measures such as raising diesel and other fuel prices as the electoral cycle hots up with polls due to be held by May 2014. "As of now there is no proposal to raise prices," Moily said, referring to diesel subsidy changes. Raveena Tandon promotes adoption of homeless animals

Naheed Nusrat, wife of internationally acclaimed music legend Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, sadly passed away last week after reportedly losing her battle with cancer. The wife of the Qawwali pioneer, and aunty of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, had been battling the disease when she died at the Credit Valley Hospital in Ontario, Canada on Friday 13th September. Naheed was widowed following the death of her husband in August 1997 and is survived by one daughter. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was in Leeds on the day of his aunty’s passing, with his First Direct Arena concert taking place just two days later. He expressed his grief in the following statement: “I am extremely saddened by the recent demise of aunt Naheed. She was a devoted mother and a pillar of strength to my Ustad and uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali

Puppy love After recently adopting two dogs who were found struggling in the recent monsoon rains, Raveena Tandon Thadani is teaming up with animal campaigners. Raveena hopes that her support for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India, will encourage everyone to follow her example. In the ad, Raveena appears with her beloved dogs Chotu, a “community dog” whom she brought home off the streets, and Cuddles, who was adopted from an animal shelter, next to the words “Puppy Love: Adopt, Don’t Buy!” Raveena also sat down for a video interview with PETA India in which she explains why she was inspired to adopt all five of the dogs with

Ranbir Kapoor What prompted you to sign for Besharam? It was several things really. I am a big fan of director Abhinav Kashyap’s work. Abhinav knows how to tell a simple yet very interesting story. This film has it all; it has romance, action and comedy. It tells a simple yet effective story. I was also drawn to my character. It is a very different type of character to play and it allowed me to express myself in a new and creative way.

Were there any particularly special moments whilst making the film? The entire film was a blast to work on. My character ‘Babli’ has very few hang-ups and inhibitions, he more or less does as he wants and so this was fun to portray. Also, I had fun working with my co-stars and my parents.

A good film is often one that takes elements from its own culture and tradition rather than trying to just incorporate a mainstream/Western format. For example in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ang Lee took inspiration from his own culture and created a fantastic film.

Pluggin it! Remember that strange, futuristic BMW with the blue lights that Tom Cruise drove in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol? Well, it’s an electric car concept that BMW has been showing in various forms at auto shows the past two years and finally BMW has used the IAA 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show to finally unveil its plug-in hybrid sports car – the BMW i8. Joining the BMW i3 electric car that was launched in July, the BMW i8 is designed to embody the same “i” values, with an uncompromised drive experience from a car that's firmly looking towards the future. Like the i3, the i8 features a carbonfibre reinforced plastic passenger cell to provide lightweight strength, with the distinctive body panels making up the futuristic external design. But a sports car is more than looks, it's about performance and the BMW i8 has a new plug-in hybrid powertrain. There's a three-cylinder 231hp combustion engine to drive the rear wheels, as well as a 96kW electric motor to drive the front wheels, with lithium-ion batteries. The electric motor provides an acceleration boost to the combustion engine, meaning the BMW i8 will get

up to 62mph in 4.4 seconds. There's a limited 155mph top speed from a combined output of 362bhp. These figures might not turn heads in the world of sports cars, but it's achieved with emissions of 59g/km of CO2 and a stated 113mpg fuel efficiency. You can drive up to 22 miles on the electric motor alone at speeds of up to 75mph and the battery will charge on overrun, as you'd expect from a hybrid. BMW tells us that you can charge the battery to 80 per cent in 2 hours from a mains charger. There are a number of driving modes, from the pure electric through to sports. In the normal "comfort" mode, BMW say you'll get 310 miles from a full petrol tank and fully charged battery. Of course, having a hybrid arrangement, you'll not find yourself facing a lengthy recharging once the battery runs flat. Inside the BMW i8 is futuristic, with a fully digital instrument display and integration with the ConnectedDrive system, so you'll be connected to the world and your smartphone, with all the mod cons. The BMW i8 will be available to order from September 2013, with deliveries expected in July 2014. It will cost you £99,845.

Honda reveals first details of its Civic Type R

Turbocharged Honda has revealed that the hotly anticipated new Civic Type R will be powered by a direct injection turbocharged 2litre engine and will deliver at least 280 PS. The car has already been put through its paces by Honda’s WTCC driver Gabriele Tarquini and a film demonstrating its storming performance and handling on the Nurburgring has been put up for viewing. Last year Honda confirmed ambitions for the Civic Type R to become the fastest front wheel drive car around the infamous Nurburgring circuit in Germany. The car still faces a further two years of development before going on sale in 2015 however, on-track testing has already begun. Manabu Nishimae, President, Honda Motor Europe, said: “We have recently spent a week at the Nurburgring, carrying out extensive testing and we are on target, and have already set a time approaching the lap record.” Honda has also confirmed the Civic Tourer will achieve impressively low CO2 emissions from just 99g/km and an outstanding 74.3mpg when powered by Honda’s 1.6 i-DTEC engine. The British built Civic Tourer builds on the strengths of the hatchback model, offering class leading boot space and practicality and will go on sale in early 2014. This year however, at the Women's World Car of the Year awards the Ford Fiesta 1.0l Eco-Boost came out on top as the most economic choice. The judges panel consisted of respected published and specialist women motoring writers and had the task of primarily reflecting the preferences of women buyers through the ballot box of women motoring writers from around the world. The judging categories had a

three-tier voting system to ensure all angles were covered in that particular category. The Family Car category, for instance, included childfriendliness, storage space and value-for-money and individually. Chief Judge, Sandy Myhre of New Zealand, said that judges were asked to supply their own short list from 2013 model year cars they've tested. From there, a short list was formed to determine the finalists and from the finalist list judges choose their supreme winner and the podium finishers. She said The presentation of the trophies and certificates will this year take place in London at the beginning of October.

This is not to say that Galahad did not fight well but from my viewpoint the Kid was too cautious in the first couple of rounds and one could see he was totally focussed on landing the perfect shot. To his disadvantage the Kid made Dickens look like he was comfortably winning the fight with his pitter patter punches. To be honest Jazza did throw a lot of these type of punches and they did catch the eyes of the judges. Galahad’s fairy tale ending at this stage looked all but a dream. As the whole affair started to become a nightmare, the atmosphere was terrific and very voluble but one could see the home crowd, like myself, were all becoming very anxious as the fight was close and going the other way. The pace was fast and furious, Jazza was supposed to be subdued at this stage but this was not the case. The notable rounds for Dickens were rounds three and four where he produced perfect shots to the body, the head and five punch combinations. Jazza was so dangerous at this point, his punches landing were clearly and cleanly seen by the judges not to mention all the partisan fans. Again these rounds were Jazza’s best work and so convincing. Galahad tried to slow the pace and pick Dickens off at range, which

By round five both Galahad and Jazza went toe-to-toe and this was the telling point of the fight as, from my viewpoint, it was brilliant to see two supreme athletes throwing caution to the wind and having a go to prove who was the master of the other. At this point Jazza Dickens started to look shabby but again the rounds were close and in favour of the Liverpool man. I felt that in rounds six and seven Kid Galahad’s timing was slightly off and he had a hint of frustration as he realised it wasn’t going to be an easy nights work. By now Jazza’s face was marked and bruised up with blood was leaking from his face. However that did not bother Dickens one bit, he was determined to get that belt. And boy was he still dangerous as he caught Kid Galahad with a heavy overhand left flush on his head, which sent a spray of sweat through the air. Now by the eighth round the fight was so close for both fighters that I personally had it a draw. The ninth round was a fantastic round of boxing for Kid Galahad. He picked off Jazza Dickens with

ease at range, his footwork, his balance was pure boxing artistry. If Carlsberg did boxing this would be it. It was like Naseem Hamed revisited. The ease he subdued Dickens with was pure magic, but then out of the blue the referee jumped in and stopped the fight. He took a point off the Kid for pushing and holding Jazza Dickens’ head down in a clinch. To be noted, the referee had previously given the Kid a couple of warnings for the same misdemeanour. I thought this was crazy for the referee to do this at such a major point in the fight. All the hometown fans were enraged and thought the fight fix was in. All of a sudden from a close fight Jazza Dickens was now in front by two rounds. One could see an upset on the cards of the hometown favourite. Everybody was nervous, promoter Mick Hennessy, Channel 5 and the hometown crowd as the round ended. The only one who was cool, calm and collected was master trainer Dominic Ingle. It was Ingle’s cool calm demeanour that was transferred to and absorbed by Kid Galahad as he sat in the corner during the rest period following round nine. Ingle told him “you must line Dickens up and

let your hands go, you go out there now and finish this kid, simple. Pace yourself now, pick your shots it is tight. You have 3 rounds to do it in. All he (Jazza Dickens) has to do is to stay on his feet and he wins this fight. You have to go out there now and put it on him.” If that was not motivating enough then I am the Popes daughter! And boy did Kid Galahad step up. The expression on his face was not one of defeat, it was of lets go to work now. He did just that. The Kid upped the pace of the fight, like a leopard homing in on its prey. Just like a rocket he shot straight on to Jazza Dickens, throwing devastating crunching punches from all angles into Jazza’s face. By this time Jazza’s face was a pulp of red mess, he was visibly tired unable to stop the onslaught. The pace, the punches, the timing were so ferocious. Jazza tried to rally but the Kid was not about to let him off the hook this time with the fight in the balance and slipping away. Galahad lined Jazza up and boom! With unbelievable power and skill the Kid delivered his WMD (weapon of mass destruction) and boy it blasted Jazza into oblivion

with a flash bang effect. I wouldn’t be surprised if the UN nuclear inspectors come knocking on Kid Galahad’s door after this. The Kid switched stance and threw one almighty perfect left hand shot knocking Jazza out. If ever the Kid needed a punch that was the one and it took the fight right out of the judges hands delivering him the coveted Lord Lonsdale belt and the British title. The hometown fans were ecstatic as Jazza was knocked to the canvas. The referee called halt to the contest in round ten as Dickens was clearly in no condition to continue. His corner team knew the fight was over for him and threw in the towel for good measure. The victorious Kid said after: “I knew I was behind on the scorecards. I knew he was going to come out fast in the first few rounds. “He came out like a bull, but I just knew when I find my range, my distance –boom!” What a great fight for two quality fighters, a great fight for Channel 5’s TV ratings and most of all a great night for the fight fans. Who said that professional boxing is a dying sport?

Panesar’s back England bowler set to make national return

and 164 wickets, the Sikh bowler could prove a vital instrument in England’s performances over the Christmas period and offers an alternative approach to the likes of James Anderson and Stuart Broad. Australian hockey coach, Terry Walsh, has been tipped to take over the reins of India’s national side after Michael Nobbs resigned earlier his year due to health problems. Walsh, a Silver medallist at the 1976 Montreal Games, is expected to demand a much higher salary than his predecessor, with clearance required from the Sports Authority of India. With India virtually guaranteed a place in next year’s World Cup, in The Hague, the side are now in desperate need of a chief coach to guide them in the prestigious tournament. As head coach of the Netherlands men's team, Walsh guided the Dutch to a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Classified as a Master Coach by the international hockey federation (FIH), Walsh previously served as head coach for the Australian men's team from 1997-2000.

The infrastructure really is fantastic. The scoreboard is brand new, and the nets are only four years old. He added: “If nothing else let’s hope this demonstration today makes people realise what the community might lose.” The club currently caters for players aged from nine-years-old and has five junior sides as well as a first team. Current first team captain, Masood Ahmed, and fellow player Zarak Khan, both explained their worry for the younger generation who may be more affected by the decision than even the first team players. “We might have the ability to simply move club because we are in a fortunate enough position to have that option yet for the kids and some of the upcoming talent they won’t be that lucky,” they explained. To our minds kicking the club out like this is remarkable, and is a very rash decision indeed. “The league does not appear to be providing a very good reason as to why they have removed the club and so we want to see them back down and reconsider the decision. Hopefully they will see

that they have the right stuff from the club now and Manningham Mills can be reinstated.” The League’s management board has issued the following statement: “As a consequence of a number of serious issues which have arisen during the 2013 season, involving Manningham Mills Cricket Club’s breach of the Bradford Cricket League’s rules and standards, including nonpayment of dues to the league, the remaining 25 constituent clubs, affiliated to the League, were asked to consider Manningham Mills’ future membership. “At an Extraordinary General Meeting on 19th September 2013, a representative from each of the constituent clubs was requested to vote on a resolution as to whether Manningham Mills should remain members of the league. “Having regard to all the facts, including representation from Manningham Mills, the result confirmed by 17 to seven with one abstention that Manningham Mills Cricket Club’s membership of the League should be discontinued, with immediate effect. “The ballot was limited to member clubs only, the management board did not participate or offer any recommendation as to how the clubs should vote.”

A Bradford cricket club, which has seen the likes of Adil Rashid and Gemaal Hussain pass through the doors, was controversially exiled from their local league earlier this month. The decision to remove Manningham Mills Cricket Club from the JCT600 Bradford League was met by anger and frustration by the local community who staged a protest last week at the home of the club. With a proud 148 year history, the Mills have become

synonymous with success over the years, nurturing young talent as well as competing in one of the top amateur leagues in the country. However, the decision was made earlier this month to remove the side from the competition following a season long dispute over unpaid fines and ground improvements. A secret ballot was staged by the league officials whereby all 24 teams from the local league voted for or against the exile of their peers with 17 votes going for the decision and seven against. Manningham Mills were subsequently removed from the

contest yet the decision has been labeled a rash one by many stakeholders in the club. Mahboob Hussain is a former Mills player, representing the side between 1997 and 2007. He was a leading body in orchestrating the protest at the Bradford-based club and was shocked to hear of the decision. He said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you look at the history of this club it is 148 years old. Over the years itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s had players go on to play for England but more In terms of capturing the local talent it is a haven and for this to be shut down would be a catastrophe.
