Christmas with the
Homeless Candlelit dinner and presents handed out this winter By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A very special dinner was served up to Leeds’ homeless population last month as a three-course upmarket meal was brought to those most in need this winter. Since July 2012, generous volunteers have been giving up their own time, on the final Friday of each
month, bringing and giving out food, whilst speaking with society’s less fortunate as part of the ‘Leeds with the Homeless’ project. As the festive season arrived and December passed by, the final Friday of the year fell just one day after Christmas, and with the festive spirit still flowing through the city, there was no stopping the charitable initiative. On 26th December, young and old gathered at Trinity Church, on Boar Lane, to receive a premier meal, with all the festive trimmings, prepared and served up by a team of volunteers. Presents were also handed out to those in attendance with winter warmer kits including hats, scarves and gloves all unwrapped on the day. Adil Hussain, co-founder of the project, explained why he wanted to do something ‘extra special’ on Boxing Day. He said: “We wanted to do something different for the service users in December as it is a time of year which is traditionally spent with family - something which many of these people unfortunately do not have. “We needed a way to show them some love and care so we decided to put on the upmarket meal and the
response from the homeless and our volunteers was amazing.” He added: “Some people ask why we do this project and I always tell them that most homeless people were once just like you or I but due to unfortunate circumstances, they have ended up on the streets. “They get caught in this state of paralysis which they can’t get out of without support and that is what we try to provide. “If in 10 or 50 years from now, we help just one person get back on their feet, then all of this will have been worthwhile.” Adil continued by saying that he was incredibly proud of all the volunteers who turn up every month to make the project a success and thanked them for their support once again last month. “I always say that without the volunteers this project does not exist, it is as much there initiative as it is mine,” he said. “The reason we do it is not for financial gain or personal gain, it is purely to please God. We don’t want anything back from the homeless and everyone who helps are extremely giving and sincere. “A special thanks goes out to everyone who came down last month, and those who continue to
support us including Habib and Hanif from the Hamara Centre.” Immi Akhtar was one of the volunteers on the day and labelled it a ‘truly inspiring evening full of joy and satisfaction’. He said: “It was an honour serving the less fortunate people of Leeds and seeing a truly genuine smile on their faces.”
Meanwhile, fellow volunteer, Farhan Khan, added: “We are privileged to be in a position where we are able to come together as a community and help our local brothers and sisters who are less fortunate than us, in most circumstances, through no fault of their own.”

School applications
Families with children who are due to start primary school in September 2015 are being reminded they have until 15th January to apply for their preferred schools. Previous years have shown that those who apply late have a 30 per cent less chance of getting a preferred school place, which can be upsetting for both parents and children. To avoid this, Leeds City Council is urging families to submit their preferences by Thursday 15th January. The quickest and easiest way to apply is online at www.leeds.gov.uk/admissions. People who apply online will receive a confirmation email that their preferences have been received and will receive their offer by email on 16th April 2015.

PARIS ATTACK: Growing debate among Muslims and freedom of speech
Have your say on spending
Residents still have the chance to tell Bradford Council their ideas about how services can be delivered differently in the future. A series of events which was held around the Bradford district at the end of last year are resuming in 2015 with the next one being held at the Thornbury Centre next Wednesday 14th January between 7pm and 9pm. Bradford Council has organised the events to talk to local people about a New Deal for their District. By next year the Council will have cut its spending by over £170 million since 2011. Between now and 2020 the money for Council services is forecast to reduce by another £130 million. That is nearly a third from £420 million today to around £290 million.
Youths in employment
The District’s next Public Forum for Education will be looking at ways in which young people can be supported into employment. The debate will look at the way schools, higher education and further education institutions as well as families can help, and what roles they can play. The forum takes place on Wednesday, 28th January 2015 at 4.30 pm at Leeds City College in Keighley. Cllr Ralph Berry, Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: “This is a very important topic for our district. “Providing young people with the right skills and experience and a choice of pathways is key to supporting them into employment. Anyone with an interest is welcome to come along.”

In the wake of the terrorist attack, where gunmen in Paris killed 12 people, many Muslim clerics across the globe quickly condemned the actions, saying there was no acceptable justification for the killings. It was a signal from some of the Islamic world's strictest voices that cartoons lampooning the Prophet Muhammad in the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo were not a reason to kill the artists. On Sunday 11th January, hundreds of thousands of people including a number of world leaders such as Angela Merkel, Benjamin Netanyahu, and David Cameron gathered in Paris for a unity rally, to stand in mourning, in defiance. These declarations were a display of solidarity with those who lost their lives and those who survived. Western critics are becoming increasingly brazen about suggesting there is something

inherent in Islam that is sparking violence by some of its adherents. Most Muslims reject this, arguing that the conflicts in the Middle East have created fertile ground for fuelling anger and discontent on foreign policies of the Western world. What has become rather alarming to see are the relentless calls for the Muslim communities across the world to denounce terrorism carried out by radicalised individuals and groups. Where Muslims are making gestures of solidarity via social networks, they can share the frustration, fear and devastation of acts of terror, but in reality most are not able to do much more. They don’t feel competent enough to feign expertise in a matter they know little of. The dilemma now is how to engage in the growing debate within Islam on how to reject the radicalised minority that most Muslims fear are dragging them into conflict and wrecking the faith. The attack on Charlie Hebdo prompted the West contending that Islam fuels violence, but hundreds of thousands of Muslims say they are tired of apologising for an extremist fringe which is
distorting the view of their religion. Despite the sadness and immense sense of grief for those who have lost their loved ones through acts of terrorism, one can't help but to sit back and reflect upon the situation. Charles Hebdo, for years, intentionally and repeatedly made a mockery of religion and ridiculed Muslims openly saying that Prophet Muhammed meant nothing to him and that he had the right to exercise his ‘freedom of speech’. Where calls to defend the right to practice freedom of speech, Andleeb Hanif – Managing Editor of Asian Express says: “Selfrestaint applies to every law of the universe” and that “there are limits and boundaries for everything. “Firstly, there is no justification for the grotesque murders which took place in Paris. Islam is not that weak to be brought down by cartoons and caricatures. "Where I agree to freedom of speech and expression, as with everything in life - that too I believe, comes with responsibility and moderation. Freedom of speech is an infinite void, which may inevitably lead to being offensive, but there's a huge difference between that and having
a purposeful campaign to repeatedly offend. “When we are now globally aware that using religious slurs such as ‘hebe’ or ‘yid’ (Jewish people) or ethnic slurs such as ‘golliwogg’ and ‘n*gger’ (black people) is hideously offensive and socially unacceptable, why would someone maintain that it’s their right to use it? For the sake of having their freedom of speech? “The next issue of Charlie Hebdo’s satirical magazine is set to publish, yet again, another cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad this week. “My question to this is – in the light of the recent Paris attack, the world has yet again become aware of how offensive it is to Muslims (in general) to depict an image of the Prophet Muhammad – then why continue to do so? “We wouldn’t continue to, nor is there any excuse to use the words n*gger and hibe now that we are so acutely aware of how repugnant these terms are to the people, so why continue to insult Muslims by continuing to do something that has so publically been denounced? "What kind of freedom of speech is this? The literate world (it seems to me) has just proven how illiterate it can be.”

A greener Bradford
Bradford Council’s Executive is being asked to endorse a new Municipal Waste Minimisation and Management Strategy. The aim of the strategy is to first reduce and then recycle as much household waste as possible alongside a search for a new treatment and disposal contract to deal with what remains. Running in parallel with the plans to cut the total amount of waste for disposal is a search for a new waste contractor to manage up to 135,000 tonnes of household waste each year for the next 10-15 years. This is intended to take over from the interim arrangements put in place after the Government pulled its funding from Bradford and Calderdale’s joint waste management project in 2013 just months before it was due to start.

Sugar swaps
Many people have no idea how much sugar they and their family really consume because it’s in so many things. We could all do with cutting a little sugar out of our diets and helping our kids to do the same. This January, with the support of Kirklees Council, Public Health England will launch its Change4Life campaign designed to help parents reduce the amount of sugar their kids eat and drink during the day. The campaign, which launched on 5th January, allows people to sign up to receive practical, easy to implement hints, tips, advice and recipes to try with their family, all designed to help to reduce the amount of sugar had by the little, and not so little ones.
A great pantomime season
The Christmas pantomime season may be behind us (oh yes it is), but for the Victoria Theatre in Halifax it is far from forgotten, as this year’s production of Jack and the Beanstalk has broken box office records. Over 24,000 people saw the wonderful pantomime this year, with nearly 1,700 more admissions than last year and almost a 20 per cent increase in box office takings. This is a great start to 2015 for the Calderdale Council supported venue, and the Theatre continues to offer wonderful, popular shows for thousands every year. Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Marcus Thompson, said: “I’m delighted but not surprised that the Victoria Theatre has broken box office records for the fantastic pantomime, Jack in the Beanstalk. “Every year the pantomime gets more exciting and memorable and that’s just one of the reasons why visitors keep returning, not just from local areas, but also from further afield.” Asian

Three musical siblings from Bradford have taken their fundraising to a whole new note this week after releasing their own song in aid of those affected by a Taliban attack on a Pakistan school last month. 16-year-old Shakeeb Hussain, and his sisters, Ayesha, 19, and Areeba, 15, all from Undercliffe, pulled together their own money to record and release a track in aid of the Peshawar School shooting victims. On 16th December 2014, nine members of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan opened fire inside the Army Public School, killing 132 schoolchildren and 13 members of staff. Vigils were held across the world in the days and weeks that followed with touching candlelight tributes seen locally in Bradford and Leeds. Now, after deciding to do something ‘different’, the Hussain siblings released their song, a cover of John Legend’s ‘All of Me’, in hope of raising money for those affected. University of Huddersfield student, Ayesha, explained where the idea for the song came from at their official launch at Carlton Bolling College. “When the attack happened on the school it was all over the news and I think everybody was watching it in disbelief,” she said. “It made us think that this could have been us, and what can we do to help. That is when we decided upon recording a song. “We wanted to do something to show how much we care and decided that we should record this single and donate the proceeds to help our brothers and sisters affected by this tragedy.”

Bradford’s Grand Mawlid and Procession CELEBRATION: The annual Grand Mawlid and Procession will take place at the Bradford Grand Mosque this Sunday

LEADERS: Pupils and staff from Highfield Community Pre-School celebrate after being rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted
Dispose of your tree
Christmas is over, and although the decorations might be up for a while longer, many will be thinking about how to get rid of the Christmas tree. In the UK approximately 250 tonnes of Christmas trees that could have been recycled are simply thrown out after Christmas. At Ogden Water nature reserve, outside Halifax, they are offering a free Christmas tree recycling service, which is the perfect way to get rid of your tree. Staff and volunteers on site are happy to take unwanted trees off your hands, and any trees donated will help with onsite management. Those with roots will be planted up in various sections of the woodland to add to the diverse range of trees present and those that do not have roots will be used to create a wildlife hedgerow/safety barrier around the reservoir side.

An ‘OUTSTANDING’ Special praise pre-school for high-flying
By Ashley Grint
ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Children and staff at a Bradford pre-school had another reason to celebrate over the festive period after receiving a perfect report from Ofsted. Highfield Community PreSchool, located on Drury Lane, Keighley, impressed across all areas when inspectors visited last year, claiming the highest rating of ‘Outstanding’ in every category. Based in the Highfield Centre since 2004, the pre-school has been running for 35 years now and provides free early education to children aged between two and four-years-old. Playgroup manager, Shazia Mehrban, heads the place of education along with eight members of staff and was delighted to see the team’s and children’s efforts rewarded.
“All the staff work incredibly hard throughout the year supporting the children through play and providing a strong foundation to build on,” she said. “There are meticulous systems for monitoring the quality of teaching and staff have consistently high expectations of what they and children can achieve, which is evident in the report from Ofsted.”

“I would like to say a special thanks to the Pre-School Committee, who support and enhance the Pre-School by giving their time on a voluntary basis.” Amongst the areas praised in the Ofsted report was how well the pre-school met the needs of all children who attended the group. It adds that the staff’s ‘comprehensive knowledge’

She added: “I would like to say a special thanks to the Pre-School Committee, who support and enhance the Pre-School by giving their time on a voluntary basis. “Furthermore the Pre-School Committee have a strong partnership with the staff which enables our ideas to go to a further level.” Highfield Community Preschool runs five days a week from Monday to Friday with all staff fully trained in their early year’s qualifications.

After 365 days of exhaustive running and cycling, Naheem Yacub has finally completed his ‘2,313 miles in 2014’ challenge. Setting himself the target of completing the distance, the equivalent of travelling from the UK to Syria, in aid of charity, the fundraiser from Leeds finally reached his target last weekend at the Lancashire half-marathon. Battling through the final 13 miles, with his injured ankle, the part-time barber, part-time supply teacher, has run marathons, halfmarathons, 10ks and even cycled the length of the country on his way to the goal. Speaking about finally reaching his target after 12 months of continuous effort, Naheem said: “When I crossed the finish line there was just this huge sense of relief that it was all finally over. I just sat on the ground and couldn’t quite believe it. “It is a bit strange on a morning now when I wake up and I don’t have to think, ‘it’s time to go on a run’, so I am enjoying that side of it. “To know I was able to raise so much money and awareness from the initiative as well certainly makes it all worthwhile at the end of the day as it will help two very important causes.” The two aforementioned causes chosen for the challenge are the Leeds Children’s Hospital and British Red Cross’ Syria Crisis Appeal with almost £5,000 raised to date to be shared between the pair. Naheem had initially planned on
completing the total distance on foot with only one leg of cycling – from Lands End to John O’Groats – on his way to the 2,313 target. However, after injuring his ankle, he was forced onto the bike saddle more often towards the end of the challenge, but made sure he still completed his last leg in his running shoes. “To have completed it all now and to have finished the final leg back in Lancashire where I first began the challenge in January 2014, just all seems so surreal,” he said. “It was very painful on my ankle at times and I should have really gone to the doctors but I know they would have just said ‘rest it’ and I just didn’t have the time to do that. Maybe I do now.” Asked whether he will be completing the return 2,313 miles any time soon, Naheem added that he was not sure that he had another year’s worth of dedicated running in the tank at the moment but is still fundraising over the next few weeks. “We have a couple of bucket collections arranged for this month and I will be donating a full day’s takings from the barbers at the start of February,” he said. “Hopefully these extra funds will take us past our next milestone.” He added: “I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has donated because it wouldn’t have been possible without them.” If you would like to sponsor Naheem you can still do so by visiting his fundraising page at uk.virginmoneygiving.com.

APPROVED: Shabir Ahmed (right), co-chairman of the Keighley and Bradford Taxi Driver’s Association, said he approves the new rulings but wants to see more help given to cabbies from local authorities
Conversation tests welcomed by association chief
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
Drivers across Bradford are being told they will face some extra English lessons this year if their linguistic skills don’t pass the grade with the city council. The announcement was made in a report released earlier this month, with Bradford Council proposing tougher tests to ensure the city’s cabbies are able to hold conversations with their passengers. Previous rules indicated that a would-be cabbie must be able read a paragraph from a book and write a receipt for a journey. However, the latest rulings will replace the old technique with a conversation exam. A Council report says possible questions could include: ‘What do you think of the weather recently?’, ‘Where did you take your last customer?’ or ‘How do you get from A to B?’. The report adds that ‘the answers are not the focus, the focus is to ensure the applicant understands English and has contributed to a communication in English at a basic level.’
Cabbies told to ‘improve communication’
Shabir Ahmed, of the Keighley and Bradford Taxi Driver’s Association, praised the new rulings and believed communication was important in the trade. “I think no cabbie or taxi driver has ever been against this sort of test but the council has just never introduced it,” he said. “Nearly every new driver can fluently speak English now because it is important for their job. This rule should have been brought in around 20 years ago along with legislation for dress codes in my opinion but those in charge are only just catching up now.” Mr Ahmed added that, despite his backing of the changes in English tests, he would rather see the council helping drivers than adding further legislations. Referring to the £30,000 surplus that Bradford’s taxi and private hire licensing service made for the period of 2013/14, he continued: “It costs each of us £6 to get our taxi licensed. “It costs the council nothing to check them with the DVLA so every penny of that is profit. It may not sound like a lot of money but when you consider the number of drivers it is clear that we are being overcharged.” The authority has confirmed plans to lower many of its fees in the near future whilst a decision as to whether the new English tests will be brought in, will be made later this week.

Lifeguard contest
Lifeguards from leisure centres across Leeds put their skills to the test to see who would be crowned the city’s top poolside patrollers. The annual Leeds Lifeguard Challenge saw the team from Kirkstall Leisure Centre emerge as the overall winners after a day of competition which included first aid simulations and relay races. Now in its 19th year, the friendly contest is designed to help recognise the city’s lifeguards while they practice their key skills and work as a team. Held at the John Charles Centre for Sport, the event saw ten teams from Aireborough, Armley, Holt Park, John Charles, John Smeaton, Kippax, Kirkstall, Pudsey, Rothwell and Scott Hall centres battle it out. Other winners on the day included Holt Park Active, who were victorious in a rope throw relay, and Scott Hall Leisure Centre, who were the best in the simulated pool incident.

Spreading the festive joy A generous fundraiser from Huddersfield was given a helping hand by a group of secret Santas this festive season after an appeal to help distribute gifts in hospitals was answered by an enthusiastic team of volunteers. Care worker, Clare Harwood, had launched her own presents appeal in December, with the aim of handing over the gifts to a national Toy Appeal in time for them to be distributed at local hospitals. However, despite collecting almost 100 gifts in just four days, Clare was told she had missed the cut off point for donations and her presents would not be able to be delivered. Determined to ‘bring a smile to the ‘children’s faces’, she launched a new appeal for volunteers to step forward and help her distribute the gifts on their own at Calderdale Royal Hospital. This is when Huddersfield’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association got involved. Kamal Aftab, regional youth leader for Yorkshire, explained: “As Muslims we are encouraged to partake in charity and are reminded of our social responsibility to help our local communities, especially those challenged by sickness. “So, when AMYA volunteer, Idris Yousaf, saw Clare’s appeal for helpers to distribute gifts, I was really touched and knew we could help. “Clare had done a brilliant job in collecting so many presents at

GIVING: Clare Harwood sent out an appeal to help distribute presents during Christmas at Calderdale Royal Hospital, with AMYA volunteers answering the calls
such short notice.” The distribution was also part of AMYA’s national ‘Muslims for Humanity’ campaign which sees volunteers serving their local communities, especially the vulnerable and sick over the winter. Following the delivery, Clare thanked the group for their help and said despite the initial setback, it was all ‘worthwhile’. “The response from the public has been overwhelming,” she said. “I was extremely touched by the warm response I got from the children and staff who do a great job. “Seeing the young patients smile made it all worthwhile and I hope we can do this again next year. I am also very grateful to
AMYA for all their help.” Meanwhile in Huddersfield, a separate branch of AMYA volunteers headed to the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary to deliver more gifts at the children’s ward. Tariq Mahmood youth leader for the local group said: “As a youth charity we try to educate young people that each of us has a social responsibility to help our local communities, especially those challenged by sickness. “We are trying to do this by getting out into the community and offering smiles and some simple gifts.” He added: “I was extremely touched by the warm response of the staff who are all truly inspirational people.”

A very South Asian community recognised ‘Royal in annual Honours List Honour’ South Asian community recognised in annual Honours List
PROUD: Adeeba Malik, deputy chief-executive of the QED-UK charity, will receive a CBE after being named on the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
For most people, an inclusion on the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List would be considered a once in a lifetime opportunity but for one Bradford resident, her second entry is just as special as her first. Adeeba Malik, deputy chiefexecutive of charity QED-UK, was named on 2015’s prestigious list for her services as a British muslim woman on mainstream public bodies. Having already been awarded an MBE for her work in June 2004, Mrs Malik will now receive a CBE for her continued contribution to the sector. Speaking of her latest recognition, she said: “When I learnt of the news I was in shock. “I remember first seeing this official-looking letter, which had arrived in the post, with the words ‘Cabinet Office’, ‘Urgent’ and ‘Personal’ written on it in big letters. “I knew it was something very
important and once I began reading it, I thought I may be getting the honour of an OBE. “However, after reading down the first couple of paragraphs I saw that I had been put forward for a CBE which is an amazing honour.” QED works with mainstream organisations and ethnic minority communities to help address the root causes of poverty and disadvantage. Mrs Malik has been in her role since 1992, whilst also chairing the Department for Trade Industry’s national Ethnic Minority Business Forum and acting as a member of the Women and Work Commission and Home Office’s Advisory Board on Naturalisation and Integration. She added: “It is fantastic to get recognised for work you just love to do. For the past 23 years I have been working with some very supportive people at QED and have to thank them and all my friends and family for their help. “I am particularly happy to have received the award for my mother who has been the biggest influence
in my life.” Meanwhile another award recipient on this year’s list was headteacher, Mr Gulfraz Ahmed, who will receive an OBE for his services to education. Mr Ahmed has been in charge at Parkinson Lane Primary School, in Halifax, for the past 15 years. During his time, he has helped oversee the school’s transformation from being in the lowest one percentile in the country for value added, into the top five per cent nationally. On top of this, the school has also gone from being placed in special measures by Ofsted in the year 2000 to becoming an ‘Outstanding’ establishment in all areas for the past eight years. Despite such success, Mr Ahmed said the award still came as a big surprise and praised the efforts of his fellow staff for his individual accolade. “When I got told I was to receive the
award it was a surprise but I was thrilled to bits,” he said. “This achievement is very much down to the hard work our fantastic teaching staff put into all the work they do here. “We try to stay at the forefront of education and the cutting edge of latest initiatives. “Some of the projects being discussed or introduced now across schools nationwide have been practiced for the past couple of years here.” Dozens of representatives on this year’s Honours List were from the South Asian community with recipients awarded for their dedicated service to their sector.

Traffic delays
Due to the collapse of a wall in Shipley, Bradford Council have announced the temporary closure of one lane of traffic for safety reasons and to prevent further damage to the highway. The reduction to a single lane is near the junction of Otley Road and Valley Road and will affect traffic turning into Valley Road from Shipley. Bradford Council’s highway service is liaising with the landowner and the leaseholder in order to get the wall repaired as soon as possible. A spokesman for Bradford Council said: “We apologise for any delays caused by this lane closure and we will be working hard to try and get it open and traffic flowing freely again as quickly as we can.”
Bizarre year for lost and found Bradford Travelodge continues trend for forgetful guests
Castle restoration
Pontefract Castle has successfully applied for another grant to support its £3.5 million Key to the North project. The Wolfson Foundation has awarded up to £39,000 towards the costs of the exhibitions displays which will be in the new visitor centre. The Foundation is an independent charity that awards grants to support and promote excellence in the fields of science and medicine, health and disability, education and the arts and humanities. Cllr Les Shaw, Portfolio holder for Culture, Leisure and Sport, said: "We are delighted with this award and appreciate the decision of the Foundation's Board of Trustees to make the award to Pontefract Castle.”
PROPERTY: A range of items have been forgotten in Travelodge rooms in Bradford Central over the past year
We’ve all been guilty of leaving something behind in the hotel room whether it be some clothing, phone or tablet device, it happens to the best of us. However, it is not so common to leave a set of 24 carat gold Indian Gods, a six foot piece of snake skin, or a pug called Dancer, but these are just some of the things forgotten at Travelodge hotels over the past 12 months. Forgetful visitors have been busy filling the lost and found boxes across the country and the story is no different here in Yorkshire, with local hotels reporting similar trends. In Bradford’s Central Travelodge, a list of forgotten items may not be as bizarre yet are still plentiful with everything from a Bantams season ticket to grandfather clocks left in the room. Thankfully for the forgetful guests, all the items were picked up upon returning to the hotel before the three-month cut off point, whereby items are then handed over to charity shops. Shakila Ahmed, a Travelodge Spokeswoman said there are always tons of surprises every year in the lost and found and 2014 certainly did not disappoint. “Each year our lost and found inventory report provides plenty of revelations,” she said. “From deeds to a £2 million house, a set of 24 carat gold Indian Gods and a Vertu mobile phone right through to a pet tarantula and even exclusive yoghurt flavours which have not even been launched to the public, it’s evident what a cross section of people stay in our 500 hotels. “Our 2014 left behind register also reveals how much smart technology has become a part of our everyday lives, as we have had nearly 10,000 tablets and smartphones left behind in our hotels in the last 12 months. This is a significant increase from previous years. “What is becoming evident after speaking to our customers is that the pace of life has become so fast and we are so eager to get from A to B that valuable possessions are easily being forgotten.”

Second prosecution for Shisha bar owner A café owner in Leeds has been prosecuted for a second time after customers were once again caught smoking shisha in his premises. Tahir Tufail, owner of Rendezvous Café on Clarendon Road, appeared at Leeds Magistrate Court on Wednesday 7th January. A number of customers were found smoking shisha pipes in the café on 29th May 2014 despite measures Tufail had put in place after his original prosecution in May 2013. Following the first offence, Tufail created an outdoor smoking area and asked customers to put pipes aside on entering the café yet
customers were still found smoking indoors on the day in question, an offence made illegal under the Health Act 2006. Magistrates gave Tufail a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay a £300 contribution to costs and a £15 victim surcharge. Councillor Mark Dobson, executive member for cleaner, stronger and safer communities said: “While steps to comply with the legislation had been taken in this case, we simply cannot allow people to break the law without any consequences. “The smoking ban is well established and it’s up to responsible business owners
to ensure they and their customers observe it. “Many people aren’t aware of the harm shisha can cause. It’s not a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes and poses a serious health risk so as well as enforcing the ban we’ll continue to make sure people are aware of the health risks of smoking shisha.” Shisha smoking involves inhaling smoke from flavoured tobaccos through a waterpipe. Advice issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO) states that smoking a shisha pipe for one hour involves inhaling 100 to 200 times the amount of smoke inhaled with just one cigarette.
Enterprising students reach final in business contest

Creating a su KC essful retailer
A group of budding entrepreneurs from a local college have been showcasing their business-savvy skills this week as they progressed to the final of a nationwide competition. Students from Kirklees College, who attend the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy, have reached the last stage of the Jessops Cannon Challenge, and will go head to head with a team from Peterborough at the finals later this month. The project asked students to find the best strategies of helping struggling retailer, Jessop, which was purchased by renowned businessman Peter Jones in January 2013. The Dragon’s Den star tasked participants in the 26 Peter Jones Enterprise Academies nationally to come up with ideas to move the company forward, with its debts exceeding £80million when taken over two years ago.
Kirklees College Business Enterprise Manager Lydia Butterworth said she was delighted to see the team advance into the finals and hoped their ideas would come out on top. She said: “I am over the moon for our team – they are a group of talented and hard-working learners. “This is what the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy is all about, working on live industry projects and providing viable business solutions. “It’s a unique course for students who want to be entrepreneurs as well as providing amazing hands-on experience.” Barry Nash, National Business Enterprise Manager for the Peter Jones Foundation, added: “All of the submissions were to a very high quality and the judging panel really appreciated the hard work and efforts from the students, with some very impressive entries in terms of research, factual information and creativeness. Congratulations and good luck to Kirklees and Peterborough for the final.”

Music mixes in Leeds RETURN: Jasdeep Singh Degun has been part of Project 12 since it began a year ago and said he is looking forward to bringing ‘something exclusive’ to his home city
MUSICAL: Project 12 is a group of musicians who perform a mix of Western Classical, Carnatic and Hindustani styles
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
A group of talented musicians will be performing in Leeds for the first time this week as cultures are brought together in the city for a very unique performance. The band, known as Project 12, comprises of 11 young British musicians from diverse backgrounds, aged between 20 and 30-years-old, who all share the artistic ambition to create and perform world music that best represents them. Infusing their love of classical Indian music with their Western upbringing, the unique performance will take place at Leeds Belgrave Music Hall on Friday 16th January. Amongst the musicians is local Leeds born artist, Jasdeep Singh Degun. The Ethnomusicology graduate is not only an accomplished sitarist, but also contributes, and composes to, the music of the band and is looking forward to returning to his home city. He explained: “Project 12 was born a year ago, but some of us have known each other for over 10 years. “We have all grown up enjoying a mix of music styles, from Western RNB and Hip Hop to classical Indian ragas, but in all our situations there was very little space for composing our own music. “Project 12 is a product of our past experiences and our urge to create something exclusive and new.” Jasdeep continues; “We’ve come together very naturally, we never imagined we’d be touring the country sharing our passion of music with such captive audiences.” The local musician has previously collaborated with
Local sitarist returns with exciting band orchestras, such as the National Youth Orchestra and Aldeburgh Young Musicians, whilst in 2011, he performed at Buckingham Palace for HRH Prince Harry as part of Goldie's Band. Keranjeet Kaur Virdee, CEO of SAA-uk who are organising the event, commented that she was looking forward to seeing Jasdeep and the whole band perform what is bound to be a memorable
concert. “We strive in helping grow and nurture young talent and we’ve been fortunate enough to see many young artists flourish into accomplished musicians,” she said. “Jasdeep, like, many of the other members of Project 12, has been previously to our teaching academies, workshops and classes, his own first teacher was actually the founder of SAA-uk.
CONCERT: The group will be performing in Leeds on Friday 16th January at Leeds Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen
“Jasdeep has even recently started teaching some of our workshops and it is a privilege to have such an accomplished artist sharing his experiences with our young members. “We’re thrilled to welcome this truly innovative and cutting edge band into Leeds for the first time.” Project 12’s performance at Leeds’ Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen will start at 7pm.

Colourful procession of Youngsters take to the streets for annual celebration
‘peace and love’ By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
More than 800 children from across Kirklees marched through the streets of Heckmondwike last weekend to mark Prophet Muhammad’s birthday with a colourful procession. As part of the annual ‘Kiddies and Young People’s Eid Milad Peace Procession’ the youths took part in the celebrations organised by the Sufi Muslim spiritual movement, Dawat-EIslami. Every year children and young adults gather at the Kanzul-Imam Jamia Masjid, on Albion Street, before setting off on their colourful procession around the town. The participants travel from local mosques in Dewsbury, Batley and Heckmondwike to
join in the parade, walking and waving green flags and singing Islamic poetry. Green was also the favoured colour for turbans on the day as it symbolised the group’s love for nature and the environment, whilst white tunics were worn as a sign of purity. The peace procession ended outside the Albion Street place of worship where prayers were said before Samosas and hot milkshakes were served to all those who had taken part. Later, religious scholars made speeches inside the Kanzul-Iman Jamia Mosque on aspects of Prophet Muhammad's life and how he was always ready to help the poor, elderly and the needy. Speaking to the youth during one of the speeches, senior Muslim Scholar, Mufti Shams-UlHuda Khan Misbahi, said: “As a messenger of God, for
Muhammad his whole life was spent thinking about the welfare of others - helping them and making sure they were not hungry or unhappy in his Islamic State at Medina. “Today, sadly, the extremists do not want Muslims to celebrate prophet Muhammad's Eid Milad –his birthday – because celebrating Eid Milad helps us to learn how Muhammad's Islamic State went out of its way to spread peace, love, compassion and tolerance. “Those who celebrate Eid Milad will never get brainwashed by these extremists or get influenced by their nasty politics. “It is now more important than ever before for Muslims to take part in this important festival within the Islamic calendar.” This year, Eid Millad fell on Sunday 4th January and was celebrated around the world.

An exhibition celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema legacy will launch at a Dewsbury Museum this weekend bringing a touch of South Asian history to West Yorkshire. The ‘Legacy of Indian Cinema Art’, or ‘LOICA’, drew in large crowds when it was shown briefly for a day at the Batley Festival last year with many onlookers commenting on the unique exhibition. Now local people will get another, longer chance to enjoy it when it is displayed at the museum in Crow Nest Park, Heckmondwike Road, from Saturday 10th January until Friday 20th March. The project, by the Batley-based Kirklees Filmmakers, was brought to life with the help and collaboration of 10 artists from across different spectrums including dance, theatre, play, art, music and film. Meirul Din, the Creative and Artistic Director, said: “I am delighted to present LOICA. Our exhibition comprises art produced by very talented artists who have worked with participants from across Kirklees and Bradford. “LOICA, has been inspired by Indian Cinema, bringing together the sparkle and rich and diverse colours from Bollywood, whilst using Kandinsky’s technique of representation and abstract art. We hope you visually enjoy the show.” The ‘show’ as Ms Din described it, showcases 12 large canvasses that interpret scenes from the first film of Indian cinema, ‘Raja Harishchandra’, highlighting the vibrant Kandinsky colours of the time. As each scene unfolds, the viewer’s senses are livened by the spectacular ray of mood-reflecting colours, from happiness to sadness and then onto tranquillity. The aim of the project, which involved 96 participants in the creation of the artwork, was to unite people from different cultures through an innovative creative activity and to form a legacy piece of art that will be toured across museums and art galleries for years to come. The exhibition can be viewed during Dewsbury Museum’s usual opening times with free admission for all.

January 2015 - 1st Edition SUCCESS: Ahmad Gul has been recognised as one of the top Gujarati writers in the UK after being awarded the Gurajat Darpan Award for his short stories entitled ‘Ajaanya’
www.asianexpress.co.uk One man’s passion for writing was acknowledged from the other side of the world last month as a Batley resident was awarded a top literary award, all the way from India. Ahmad Gul, poet and chairman of the Gujarati Writers Forum (GWF), was given the Gujarat Darpan Award for his collection of short stories entitled ‘Ajaanya’ (meaning ‘Strangers’). The presentation took place in Indore, India last month, on behalf of the historic literary organisation known as the Gujarati Sahitya Parisad, of which Mahatma Ghandi once chaired in the 1930’s. The 105-year-old organisation holds the awards ceremony biannually and it is considered one of the t o p literary
Local honours in Gujarati literature. Mr Gul, who moved to Batley from India back in 1963, has been writing since his arrival in the UK and initially used it as a way of remembering home. His latest commendation was awarded for his short stories which depicted the ‘realities of Muslim families and society’ – something which is somewhat rare in this type of literature. Commenting on his award, Mr Gul, confirmed that his triumph was the second best achievement of his life and could only be triumphed by his OBE recognition. Ismail Daji, secretary of GWF added: “The members of Batley’s Gujarati Writers’ Forum congratulate Ahmad Gul for this outstanding achievement. “This award has placed him to a level not yet reached by any member of Gujarati community in the UK. “We feel it’s a just and rightful recognition of Mr Gul’s hard work, his literary ability and his deep insight into our culture, our family life, and our society.” Mr Mohamed Mula, chairman of the Indian Muslim Welfare Society (IMWS), added: “We would like to congratulate Mr Lunat OBE for his achievement. “Let us hope such a glittering prize would act as a catalyst for the ‘would be’ author from our local community.”

City welcomes in new hotspots for easy internet access
Free Wi-Fi in Leeds CONNECTED: Additional areas in Leeds will begin receiving the free Wi-Fi later this year, pictured Councillor Lucinda Yeadon with Dr Adam Beaumont, CEO of aql
More people across Leeds will be able to surf the web for free this year after the council announced the award of a new Wi-Fi contract. Leeds-based company ‘aql’ have been contracted to deploy free WiFi in additional parts of the city at no cost in a bid to get even more local residents online. The announcement comes after the council recently began installing free Wi-Fi in more than 100 council buildings, including libraries, museums and leisure centres, under the government-funded Super Connected Cities programme.
Free Wi-Fi is also already available at Millennium Square and Briggate under an existing arrangement, with more than 30,000 people registering over the last two years. The new contract with aql will start early this year in parts of the city yet to be finalised, but will aim to reach areas where internet connectivity is poor or where people are unable to afford internet subscriptions. Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for digital and creative
technologies, culture and skills, said: “Our ambition is for Leeds to be a modern, digitally-focussed city where residents are fully equipped to take advantage of all the opportunities that the internet provides. “In order for us to achieve that, it’s absolutely crucial that as many
residents as possible are able to access the internet, no matter where in the city they live. “This new contract will hopefully go some way to helping bridge the ‘digital divide’ by potentially focussing on some of the areas of deprivation and current poor connectivity.”
Aql already have a presence in Leeds, with their old style blue telephone boxes providing free WiFi on the Headrow and in other city locations. The new contract will see most of the new Wi-Fi devices mounted on street lighting columns.

Be warned of ‘Superman ecstasy’
Police have issued a warning to drug users following the circulation of a of so-called batch 'superman ecstasy' which has been linked to the recent deaths of four people in Suffolk and Shropshire. While there is no specific intelligence to suggest the drugs are being sold in West police forces' Yorkshire, across the country are advising drug users of the dangers associated with this particular batch of ecstasy, which comes in the form of a tablet featuring a red Superman 'S' logo design. Bryan Dent, West Yorkshire
Police's Drugs Coordinator, said: “Provisional forensic tests from the Suffolk investigation indicates the tablets that led to the deaths contained a particularly harmful and dangerous ingredient (PMMA). “This is more likely than usual to cause harm or even
death to anyone taking the drug. “Users of any drug can never be really sure of the contents of anything they take but with ecstasy, which is a class A drug meaning it's illegal to possess and supply, the potential health issues are very real and potentially fatal.”

Tackling gang cultures
New powers helping police tackle persistent offenders Police in Kirklees are tackling gang culture problems head on this year after bringing in tougher powers to combat offenders. A ‘Criminal Behaviour Order’ (CBO) can now be handed out to people as an alternative, tougher punishment than an anti-social behaviour order (ASBO) which allow officers to intervene sooner if the party does not comply. Two teenagers, who were convicted of robbery last month in Huddersfield, are some of the first people to be handed the orders and cannot enter parts of the town including Dalton, Almondbury or Waterloo. They have also been banned from interacting with each other. Chief Supt Tim Kingsman of Kirklees Police explained further: “These two males have been the subject of attention from the Kirklees Partnership, in which staff from both Kirklees Council and Kirklees Police have been working hard for some time to target those suspected of anti-social behaviour. “We are putting in place measures, such as
CBO’s, to make communities safer. These CBO’s give authorities more powers to monitor and manage those who have brought harm to their communities. “I hope the use of these new powers and the substantial sentences handed to these offenders will send out a very strong message that those who think it is acceptable to behave in this fashion will be punished. “It is a fact that crime is coming down in Kirklees and our streets are becoming safer. “Tackling gang culture has been a key part of our work to tackle anti -social behaviour and related street crime and I am very pleased officers in this division have been able to secure these new orders, almost as soon as the powers have become available.” The 16-year-old from Huddersfield, and 17-year-old from Dalton, were sentenced to 48 months and 28 months in custody respectively. CBO’s were first implemented in 2014 under the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime Policing Act 2014 and replaced anti-social behaviour orders.

Masjid construction ‘ahead of schedule’
CONSTRUCTION: The development of the new Masjid has advanced significantly over the last month and should be completed before April
The development of Leeds’ latest Masjid is in its third stage and ahead of schedule as the efficiency of Ontime Construction, and support of the Masjid-e-Quba, prove to be a winning combination. In just one month, the development has taken huge strides forward with all the internal walls now in place as well as the roof structure. External walls are expected to be completed before the next update before the end of the month, whilst the final dome for the roof has
already been ordered. With a deadline of April, work has been completed much quicker than anticipated and for contractor/developer, Aihtsham Rashid, it has been a great team effort. “Usually a mosque in the UK will take between one and two years to construct but we are looking on track to complete this now within just a fraction of that time, having begun works just eight weeks ago,” he said. “It is the eighth week of
development now and it is going great. We have surpassed all expectations with the speed of the work. “I just want to say a special thank you to Mr Mir from the Masjid-eQuba and the committee for their continued support and cooperation from day one.” Despite the progress, the Masjid still requires more funds to be donated to help fund the construction costs. Amongst the stages under-development at the moment include minarets, under-
floor heating, windows, the dome roof and a Wudu area. Chairman, Rana Akram, added: “Our gratitude goes out to all the community who have supported the project and pledged money so far. “However, we still need more funds and would ask anybody who can help financially to please get in touch.” If you are able to help, £500 can purchase one pallet of stone with the payment welcomed in a one-off sum or spread across a payment plan until the end of March.

Raja’s Pizza Bar A taste above the rest
T
hree years ago, food enthusiasts in Leeds were granted their wish as Raja’s Pizza Bar Takeaway arrived in the city for the first time, bringing with it some of Bradford’s most loved dishes and of course the renowned pizzas. Prepared and baked today the same way as they were in 1996 when the business first opened, customers have travelled from across the north of England to sample the cheesy delights with their choice of toppings. Leeds’ Roundhay Road site continues to live up to these tasty traditions and the high reputation expected of a Raja’s franchise with every meal developed as perfectly as the last. Of course it isn’t only pizza that can be picked up from the much-loved takeaway with a
wide array of dishes now freshly prepared on site to enjoy today. From wraps to paninis, kebabs to chicken pieces, and even parmesans, it is all now served up out of the Raja’s kitchen. By listening to what the customer wants, the restaurant develops its extensive menu around popular demand. For example, why not sample the latest introduction and treat yourself to a delectable Piri Piri chicken burger. Marinated in a mouthwatering secret sauce, the burger is then served up in a fresh bread bun with salad and fries, to create a meal which has to be tasted to be truly appreciated. With a menu so diverse there is no need to eat around at all, with diners able to visit Raja’s everyday of the week and
experience a different taste sensation each time. You can even enjoy these tastes without having to leave your home by taking advantage of the quick and convenient takeaway service. If you are ordering some dinner in at home, or even lunch at work across the city, Raja’s are able to handle any order of any size and can make the perfect meal for your work day. Annis Yasin, manager of the Leeds takeaway, explained why the business set up in the city and how well received the menu had already been. “Since opening in Leeds the response has been amazing,” he said. “We decided to bring Raja’s to Leeds because we knew people had to travel from the city over to Bradford to get their favourite meals. “Instead of making them do
this journey, we thought why not bring the food to the people and that is why we are now here in Leeds. “Our famous pizzas are proving as popular as ever and regardless of age, religion or background, I guarantee that
there will be something here that will tantalise your taste buds.” So, why wait? Head down to Leeds’ premier pizza takeaway now and experience one of the city’s most reputed dining establishments.

Make the ‘right call’, choose Walk & Talk
Just Good Friends T
he English Courts have taken a stark new approach in upholding an obligation for parties to enter ‘friendly discussions’ before embarking on arbitration as an enforceable term of the contract. The English Courts have historically not recognised an agreement to negotiate as they have been held to be too uncertain to enforce and too difficult to regulate. However, in the case of Emirates Trading Agency LLC –vPrime Mineral Exports Private Limited, the Courts have departed from their conventional position to support the growing trend of upholding good faith obligations in contracts. In this case, the Court questioned whether a clause in a contract which sought to resolve any dispute by friendly discussion within a limited time of four weeks before the dispute was referred to arbitration (“the Clause”) was upheld as enforceable. Prime Minerals Exports Private Ltd (PMEP) had entered into a long-term contract to sell iron ore to Emirates Trading Agency LLC (ETA). A dispute arose when ETA failed to lift all the iron ore as expected. PMEP terminated the contract and claimed damages. In an attempt to resolve matters, several meetings were held between the parties but no settlement was reached. PMEP therefore referred the claim to arbitration. The arbitrators asserted their jurisdiction as they found that the clause did not create an enforceable obligation and even if the clause was enforceable the arbitrators were satisfied that the obligation had already been complied with. ETA therefore applied to the High Court for an Order that the arbitrators did not have jurisdiction because the obligation to enter into ‘friendly
discussions’ beforehand had not been complied with. The Court upheld the clause as enforceable for the following reasons: • The Clause was complete and certain. The Court distinguished the present case from previous case law where negotiations had not been limited to a certain time. • The clause was of an identifiable standard. It was fair, honest, and genuine discussion provided in good faith aimed at resolving the dispute. • The Court found that it was in the public interest to uphold the clause as enforceable as parties expect the Courts to enforce contractual obligations which have been freely entered into. The change in judicial thinking in this area will follow the parties’ original intention and agreements for discussions pre-arbitration/litigation are likely to be upheld (whether these discussions are likely to be friendly is another matter!) Commercial relationships are more likely to be reserved and the need for expensive and time consuming arbitration will be avoided. A delay in resolving matters may not be desirable to a potential Claimant however, particularly if they need to issue a claim within a certain timescale but cannot do so due to time scheduled in the contract for negotiations. Parties may also go through lengthy stages when there is no hope of consensus. Parties must ensure they follow any clause in a contract to negotiate if a dispute arises. If clauses are ignored, jurisdictional challenges may be raised or enforcement could be resisted at a later date. We at Blacks have a specialist team dealing with all aspects of contractual disputes and the drafting of contracts.

n today’s world, a mobile phone has become a necessity for almost every pocket so when an accident occurs it is imperative that a quick solution is found. That’s where Walk and Talk comes in. As one of Bradford’s largest mobile phone repairers and stockists, the business not only specialises in getting your phone back into working condition fast, but can also provide the next upgrade or accessory you may have been looking for. Over the past 13 years, the retailers have been operating out of the city with five stores now up and running to take care of all your mobile device needs. A flagship store on Lilycroft Lane,
Manningham, has more than 100 new and used phones available to be viewed and purchased on site alongside dozens of tablets. Meanwhile, in the city centre, Walk and Talk’s latest store finally opened its doors last month and has already proved a big hit with city shoppers, who are taking advantage of the quick and competitively priced services. Shakeel Hamed is one of the owners of the business and explained how Walk and Talk were able to offer prices at a fraction of the cost to their competitors. “Having just launched our fifth store, it is clear to see that we are continuing to grow,” he said.
“Due to this, we are able to buy our stock in bulk, whether that be phones or accessories and due to our low profit margins, the savings are immediately passed on to the customer. “Whether it is a new mobile or tablet, or just a repair job needed, we can do it all here at Walk and Talk.” The number of people who have an unsightly crack on their screen is on the rise with phones being dropped due to people’s on-the-go lifestyles. Staff at Walk and Talk are able to fix any screen and have seen so many iPhones pass through their stores that a repair job on such a device can be completed within 20 minutes of handing the phone over – all this of course at the most competitive prices around. So, when looking for a phone store you can trust, make sure you make the right call and head to Walk and Talk.

Woman’s body found in hotel Search for TRAGIC: Nadine Aburas was found dead at the Future Inn hotel in Cardiff on New Year's Eve, her lover Sammy Almahri is wanted for questioning
suspected murderer intensifies after New Year’s Eve death
An international manhunt continues after a 28-year-old woman was found dead in a hotel room. The body of Nadine Aburas, was discovered by staff at the Future Inn hotel in Cardiff on New Year's Eve. South Wales Police say they are treating the death as murder and want to trace suspect Sammy Almahri, an American national from New York City. Almahri, 44, who has distinctive injuries to his face, had an ‘existing friendship’ with Ms Aburas and is now believed to be in Tanzania, the force said. CCTV footage shows the suspect checked into the Future Inn hotel in Cardiff Bay on 30th December before Ms Aburas arrived at around 9pm that evening. He then left the building at about 3am on New Year's Eve and took a flight from Heathrow to Bahrain at 10.30am. Detective Superintendent Paul Hurley said Almahri is considered ‘dangerous’ and ‘very resourceful’ as he appealed for the public's help to find him. He said: "The hotel was busy with people who were in the city to celebrate Christmas and New Year's Eve. People will have seen them together, or on their own, and I would urge them to come forward. "While we have not yet made any arrests, we have a team of officers who are trying to trace Sammy Almahri, and now believe he is in Tanzania. "We have been working closely with our counterparts in both NYPD and police officers in Tanzania. From our inquiries we have discovered that Almahri is
very resourceful and has access to funds, which may further assist his evasion from law enforcement agencies. "I consider this man to be a dangerous individual and would advise that any knowledge of his location or sightings of him are reported immediately to the authorities - and he is not to be approached. "We are supporting Nadine's family with specially trained officers and they have paid the following tribute to her - but at this stage would now like to be left to grieve privately."
A post-mortem examination has been completed but a cause of death has not yet been confirmed. Ms Aburas's family paid tribute to her as a "lovely, bubbly girl and unique and talented woman". In a statement, they said: "She always wanted to help people and everybody loved her. She has left such a massive hole in our family and we will miss her so much. The family respectfully request that they be left to grieve privately." Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Fox News pundit: ‘Birmingham totally Muslim city’
January 2015 - 1st Edition
LAUGH: Twitter users around the world used the hashtag #foxnewsfacts to joke about the story
COMMENTS: Steve Emerson appeared on Fox News on Monday to discuss the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, and caused much controversy with his comments
People who are ‘nonMuslim’ do not go to the city of Birmingham, according to one US reporter who broadcast his views live on US news channel, Fox News, earlier this week. Steve Emerson, who claims to be a ‘terrorism expert’ and is currently the Executive Director of The Investigative Project on Terrorism, also said

Abu Hamza recieves life sentence
Local
GUILTY: Abu Hamza, known for his radical sermons at London’s Finsbury Park Mosque, was handed a life sentence last week on terrorism charges
Radical preacher to spend life behind bars
Radical London cleric, Abu Hamza al-Masri, has been told he will spend the rest of his life in a US jail for convictions on terrorism related charges, including his role in the 1998 Yemen kidnapping of Western tourists that left four hostages dead. On Friday 9th January, US District Judge Katherine Forrest, in Manhattan, imposed the sentence after Abu Hamza had been found guilty in May, of providing a satellite phone and advice to the Yemeni kidnappers. He was also convicted of sending two followers to Oregon to establish a militant training camp, and dispatching an associate to Afghanistan to aid al Qaeda and the Taliban. “You have not expressed sympathy or remorse,” Forrest told
Abu Hamza, adding that only a life sentence would ensure he could never again incite violence against innocent people. Prior to being sentenced, Abu Hamza had told the judge: “I still maintain my innocence.” The 56-year-old, whose real name is Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, testified in his defence trial and denied ever sending anyone to Oregon adding that he only acted as an intermediary during the Yemen kidnapping. Defence lawyers for the guilty party asked Forrest to allow Abu Hamza to be placed in a medical facility rather than a ‘supermax prison facility’ where his disabilities may not be treated properly. In reply, Forrest said she would let prison officials decide where he should be sent.
Abu Hamza first claimed notoriety due to his sermons at the Finsbury Park Mosque in London, which both US and UK officials have said helped inspire a generation of militants, including the would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid Abu Hamza first claimed notoriety due to his sermons at the Finsbury Park Mosque in London, which both US and UK officials have said helped inspire a generation of militants, including the would-be shoe bomber Richard
Reid. His distinctive appearance earned him the nickname ‘hook’ amongst British tabloids, due to his prosthetic metal hooks used for hands. Previous reports suggested that
he lost the limbs whilst fighting Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s, something Abu Hamza denied in court, saying they were the result of an accidental explosion in Pakistan where he was working as an engineer.

Al-Qaeda planning attack on West MI5 chief warns of potential terrorism threat
www.asianexpress.co.uk his first such speech since October 2013. In the speech, written before the Paris attacks took place, he said seasoned al Qaeda militants in Syria were aiming to ‘cause largescale loss of life, often by attacking transport systems or iconic targets’. Al Qaeda killed nearly 3,000 people by attacking the United States with hijacked passenger planes on 11th September 2001 whilst militants, also inspired by the group, killed 52 commuters in London on 7th July 2005 with suicide bombs. Al Qaeda's leader Osama bin Laden was killed by US special forces in 2011, and the threat posed by the network to the West seemed WARNING: to recede in recent years. Director But spies in Europe and General of MI5, Andrew Parker, the United States have been has warned a troubled that al Qaeda terrorist attack militants from Pakistan have appeared in wartorn Syria, in the UK is ‘highly likely’ in what some intelligence analysts say could be part of a plot to mount a major attack against the West. Thursday's stark warning from one of the West's most influential spymasters mirrors a growing concern among Western political leaders and their Arab allies about the threat from the cauldron of militant groups in Syria and Iraq.
The head of Britain’s top intelligence agency has said that ‘iconic targets’ and transport systems in the West are being targeted by al Qaeda militants in Syria in their latest attack plots. MI5 boss, Andrew Parker, was speaking after gunmen killed 12 people in an assault on the French satirical newspaper, Charlie Hebdo, warning a strike on the UK was highly likely. “A group of core al Qaeda terrorists in Syria is planning mass casualty attacks against the West,” Director General Parker said in a rare public speech at MI5 headquarters in London –
January 2015 - 1st Edition LEARN: Boris Johnson says he wants people who live and work in the UK to be able to speak English
‘Everyone should speak English’
The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, says he believes every person in the UK should speak English, after UKIP leader, Nigel Farage, claimed too many GP’s do not speak the language fluently. Mr Johnson, who also promoted the learning of other languages for Brits, was speaking on LBC Radio when making the comments and said: “I think everybody in London, everybody who comes to work in our economy, should be able to speak English.” He added that in some communities in London, people feel they don’t need to learn the country’s language, something he labelled a ‘great shame’.
“You go to Tower Hamlets, places like that, you can find people who have been there for several generations who still don't speak English,” he continued. “One of the reasons is that the media is so massive now, so disparate, so diffuse, so diverse that people can be tuned in to their own communities and not feel the need to learn the common language of this city and this country. “I think that is a great, great shame, it is a huge wasted opportunity for them and I think everybody in this country - particularly people working in our public services - should speak English.”

Petrol under £1! Forecourt owner slashes prices to delight of motorists
With fuel prices across Britain seeming to fall every other day at the moment, one petrol station owner in Birmingham has become the first in the country to slash his prices below one pound a litre. The Harvest Energy Service in Birmingham have priced their unleaded petrol at 99.7p per litre, making it the cheapest since 2009 and the lowest in the country. Velautham Sarveswaran, who owns the establishment in King’s Heath, is the man behind the forecourt and says he took the decision to drop his prices due to his low profit margins. Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, he said: “I have a great deal with my supplier, which means I have been able to be very competitive. “My customers have kept asking when we are going to drop the price to under one pound and when I looked at the figures I realised I could do it. “For me, it’s not about being greedy. As long as I make enough money to cover my overheads and give me a little
bit of a profit then I am happy.” Despite the positive example being set by Mr Sarveswaran, some auto experts are less convinced that others will follow suit so quickly. AA president Edmund King said: “There remains a postcode lottery out there when it comes to fuel prices. “It will still take some time to get down to an average of £1 per litre, particularly as 70 per cent of the pump price is tax (57.95p duty and 18.3p VAT).” Asda's senior vice president, Barry Williams, didn’t comment as to when he thought prices would fall below the milestone
but confirmed the supermarket giants are edging ever closer to the target. “Asda once again are leading this next round of price cuts, our fifteenth cut on fuel since September,” he said. “No matter where customers live, they will benefit from the same fuel price with our national price cap of 103.7ppl for unleaded and 110.7ppl for diesel.”

Ebola nurse on the mend
A British nurse diagnosed with Ebola last month is recovering and is no longer in a critical condition, the London hospital treating her said in a statement on Monday. Pauline Cafferkey, a 39-year-old nurse who normally works at a Scottish health centre, became the first person to be diagnosed with the disease in Britain after contracting it in Sierra Leone where she was volunteering at an Ebola clinic. “Pauline Cafferkey is showing signs of improvement and is no longer critically ill,” the statement from the Royal Free Hospital said. "She remains in isolation as she receives specialist care for the Ebola virus.” Cafferkey is being treated with blood plasma from an Ebola survivor and an unnamed experimental anti-viral drug, the hospital has said.
Increased patrols
British police are to step up security in Jewish areas of the country after reports of hostages being taken at a Paris kosher supermarket, a Jewish community body said on Friday. The Community Security Trust (CST), which provides security advice to Britain's estimated 260,000 Jews, said police in London and Manchester in northern England had agreed to increase patrols at synagogues and other venues over the next days. A man armed with automatic weapons seized several hostages in Paris's Vincennes district, two days after an attack on the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly left 12 dead. “There is currently no known link to the UK, but CST is in continuing contact with police and government, and there will be increased policing in Jewish neighbourhoods for this weekend’s Sabbath,” the trust said on its website.
MISSING: Sameena Imam has not been seen since 24th December when she left Costco, on Torrington Avenue, Coventry
January 2015 - 1st Edition
Police investigating the disappearance of a missing woman from Cardiff, who has not been seen since Christmas Eve, have charged two brothers with her murder. 40-year-old Roger Cooper, of Tile Hurst Drive, Coventry, and David Cooper, 38, of Hughenden Drive, Leicester, were charged by officers on 9th January. The pair were first arrested on 7th January at their home addresses on suspicion of murder and after searches at both properties both men were officially charged. Despite extensive searches by specialist police officers, 34-year-old Sameena has not been seen since 24th December, at her work address of Costco, Torrington Avenue, where she was a marketing manager. Her car, a black BMW One Series, was located by officers in Overstone Road,
Luton, on 4th January, yet there was no trace of Ms Imam. Detective Superintendent Mark Payne is leading the investigation into Sameena’s disappearance. “This is a significant development in our inquiry and our thoughts are with Sameena’s family and friends at this time,” he said. “Our investigation is still very much ongoing and I would like to thank all those who have called with information so far to help find Sameena. “We remain keen to speak to anyone who believes they may have information about Sameena’s disappearance and I would urge them to call us on 101 or the anonymous charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.” The Coopers appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court on 10th January.

“I HAVE married!” Pakistan’s politician Imran Khan admits to rumours of his marriage with former weather girl
Imran Khan has finally confirmed whispers about his secret marriage to a former BBC weather girl, just days after his family said he had denied it provoking a furious reaction from his sister. The 62-year-old Pakistan cricketer-turned-politician, who divorced heiress Jemima Goldsmith in 2004, has wed 41year-old divorced mother-of-three Reham Khan. Mysteriously on New Year's Eve, Mr Khan had dismissed rumours of marriage saying that they were 'greatly exaggerated'. His sister Aleema had spoken to the press and said the family challenged him 'a few days ago' over the news and he had categorically denied it. Speaking to reporters at Heathrow airport on Monday 5th January before boarding a flight, Khan is reported to have said: “I am going to Pakistan to share good news about my marriage with the nation. I have nothing to hide.” When Mr Khan’s sister was informed that her brother had revealed he was actually married, Aleema Khan (according to media sources) said: “Really? Really? Let’s see if he announces it officially. I am taken aback. This is a real challenge for him. We haven’t met her and I don’t know that we want to meet her.”
Aleema Khan said that she was concerned about his children: “I suppose in any situation like this the children will not feel good about it. They do look up to their father,” she added. She added that she’s keen to see how Pakistan’s public respond to the news. Ms Khan, a divorced mother-ofthree, was formerly a BBC weather girl and married to a doctor, but now works as a news anchor of an Asian TV news channel. News of the union in Pakistan has been vastly negative causing outrage, with online abusers setting up Facebook hate pages attacking the TV news anchor. Ms Khan is being accused of being a lesbian for stroking a woman's back in a picture. Other
internet trolls have attempted to shame her for wearing short skirts, partying and dancing in clubs, and even claim to be in possession of topless pictures. One image even seems to show Ms Khan in a sex shop wearing a pink nightdress, suspenders with a collar around her neck and a whip slung over her shoulder. Imran's ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith revealed in October 2014 that she was ditching the surname ‘Khan’ and reverting to her family name because her exhusband was about to remarry. Imran married Ms Goldsmith in a traditional Islamic ceremony in Paris in 1995. She had converted to Islam prior to their wedding and had learned Urdu and started to wear traditional Pakistani clothes.

Black box retrieved Indonesian navy divers have finally managed to retrieve the black box flight data recorder from the wreck of AirAsia’s Flight QZ8501 as investigators get closer to establishing a cause for the crash. The passenger jet came down off the Indonesian coast on 28th December, killing all 162 passengers onboard with no reason known yet as to why the aircraft was grounded. The Airbus A320-200 airliner lost contact with air traffic control in bad weather less than halfway into a two-hour flight from Indonesia's second-biggest city of Surabaya to Singapore. “At 7:11, we succeeded in lifting the part of the black box known as the flight data recorder,” Fransiskus Bambang Soelistyo, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency, told reporters at a news conference. The second so-called black box, containing the cockpit voice recorder, is located about 20 metres away from where the flight data recorder was found, but divers have not yet been able to get to it. “(The cockpit voice recorder) seems to be under a wing, which is quite heavy,” added Supriyadi, operations coordinator for the search and rescue agency. “So we will use air bags to lift it. This will be done tomorrow.” Investigators currently tasked with finding the cause of the crash require the cockpit voice recorder as a crucial piece of evidence which will help them piece

Commander shot by own police
An Afghan policeman shot and killed his commanding officer and a district governor in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, officials said on Tuesday, in an attack claimed by Taliban insurgents, who said the policeman had defected to their movement. The Taliban have stepped up attacks to undermine the Afghan security forces and the government after the withdrawal of most foreign combat troops 13 years
after a US-led intervention force toppled a former Taliban government. Sayed Murad Sadat, chief of Helmand's Nawzad district, and police commander Shamsullah were killed in the attack during a meeting on Monday, said Mohammad Jan Rasoulyar, deputy provincial police chief. “An investigation has already started to find out the reason for the shooting,” Rasoulyar said, adding the police officer was himself shot dead after the attack.
‘No Vatican threat warning’
TRAGIC: 162 passengers died when the AirAsia aircraft plunged into the Java Sea last month
together exactly what happened the day of the tragedy. Supriyadi suggested that the wreckage indicated that the plane likely ‘experienced an explosion’ before hitting the water due to a significant change in air pressure. He said the left side of the plane seemed to have disintegrated, pointing to a change in pressure that could have
caused an explosion. Supporting this possibility, Supriyadi added, was the fact that fishermen in the area had reported hearing an explosion and saw smoke above the water. However, another official disputed the likelihood of a blast. “There is no data to support that kind of theory,” said Santoso Sayogo, an investigator at the National Transportation Safety Committee.
The Vatican denied press reports on Monday that it had received specific warnings from Israeli and US intelligence services that it was a probable next target of an Islamist attack. La Repubblica, Corriere della Sera and other Italian papers reported on Monday that the CIA and Mossad had warned Italian and Vatican authorities that the Vatican may be a target. Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said there were normal contacts among security services but the Holy See had been given no
‘concrete and specific’ information over any risk. Pope Francis on Monday condemned last week's killings by Islamist militants in Paris and urged Muslim leaders to denounce interpretations of religion that use God's name to justify violence. “Violence is always the product of a falsification of religion, its use a pretext for ideological schemes whose only goal is power over others,” the pope said in an annual meeting with diplomats from 180 countries accredited to the Vatican, a speech informally known as his ‘State of the World’ address.

Brothers arrested in India over rape of Japanese tourist
PROTEST: “We want a rape-free India” placard voicing the anger of the crime committed against a 22-year-old student who was held in a basement and repeatedly raped for three weeks
Indian police have arrested two brothers accused of repeatedly raping a 22-year-old Japanese tourist over three weeks near Bodh Gaya, Buddhism's holiest site. The tourist had been held hostage at gunpoint in a secluded underground room close to a pilgrimage site, according to a preliminary investigation. The 22-year-old student was taken and then held in a basement and repeatedly raped for three weeks. After her health deteriorated as a result, her captors brought her to the town of Gaya for medical treatment on the 20th of December. She was able to
escape, and managed to find some Japanese tourists, who helped her reach Japan's consulate in Kolkata. The brothers accused of the horrific acts are tour guides, named Sajid and Jawed Khan. They are aged 32 and 25, respectively. The Bodh Gaya complex, 110 kilometres (68 miles) south of Bihar state capital Patna, is home to one of the earliest Buddhist temples still standing in India and attracts visitors from all over the world. The Japanese woman, a university student, had come to Gaya from Kolkata where she had checked into a hotel in November.
India has faced intense scrutiny over its efforts to curb violence against women following the fatal gang rape of a medical student in New Delhi in 2012, which sparked global outcry. Since then, several attacks on foreign women have also been reported, leading to a dip in tourist numbers to the country. Last January, a 51-year-old Danish tourist was robbed and gang raped at knife-point in Delhi. In 2013, a Swiss cyclist holidaying in central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh was robbed and gang raped by five men, all of whom were later sentenced to life terms.

Four of the satirical magazine’s well known cartoonists were amongst those killed, as well as two police officers, as a pair of Islamic extremists opened fire inside the building. The terrifying ordeal finally ended the day after the attack when the two men were shot dead after fleeing the scene and being traced to a factory on the outskirts of Paris. Across all continents, tributes have been seen in cities and towns with the phrase ‘Je Suis Charlie’ – meaning ‘I am Charlie’ – prominent in all vigils. Pens and pencils were held aloft as a sign of solidarity as protestors chanted for the victims of France’s tragedy, whilst others stood in silence to reflect upon the actions. Most notably, 3.7million people gathered in France, with an estimated two-million in Paris alone, to march through the streets to ‘support freedom’. World leaders were joined arm-inarm alongside members of the public in a touching vigil which overtook the French capital last week. Standing alongside fellow leaders, near the Place de la Republique, France’s President Hollande told crowds: “Today, Paris is the capital of the world.” Prayers for the victims were also read out during a solemn service at the Grande Synagogue de Paris, with leaders from the Muslim and Christian community represented.

Kerry visits Pakistan Condolences offered after school attack
US Secretary of State, John Kerry, visited Pakistan earlier this week as he spoke with government officials about the need to do more in the crackdown on militant groups after last month's massacre of 134 children by Taliban gunmen. Kerry met with Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, as well as Army Chief Raheel Sharif on his unannounced trip, as he offered sympathy for December’s attack. He also hoped to help galvanise Pakistan to combat militants who
have used its territory to attack neighbouring Afghanistan and India in recent times, and said the nation must stand up to the threat. Speaking as he met Kerry, Pakistani foreign adviser Sartaj Aziz suggested Kerry might visit Peshawar, the city where the 16th December attack on an army-run school took place. “We heard you are planning to visit Peshawar and the school,” Aziz said. “It is a very good gesture.” While noting the army's offensive

In addition to his talks with the

Abhishek Bachchan excited to see his wife’s comeback on big screen Aishwarya Rai is making her comeback on the silver screen with Sanjay Gupta's highlyanticipated film 'Jazbaa'. Aishwarya who was last seen on the big screen in the 2010 film 'Guzaarish', and took a break to have a baby, has stayed away from the cameras as much as possible. In November 2011, she was blessed with
Aaradhya, her daughter with Abhishek, and since then, many of her fans have been awaiting her comeback. Now her husband is upbeat about her resuming her career: "I'm very excited to see Aishwarya in 'Jazbaa'. It should be a lot of fun. Shah Rukh Khan comments on controversial film ‘PK’ There is a lot of controversy surrounding Amir Khan’s box-office hit ‘PK’ and though the film has become one of the biggest earners in India, the negative comments on the film keeps pouring in. The Rajkumar Hirani film has evoked discussion and Aamir Khan feels that the motive of the movie was to spark off healthy debates and discussions. Though the backlash went too far, the movie is expected to show Censor Board's gutsy
stance on holding on to their point of supporting a controversial matter like PK. Shah Rukh Khan commented on the film saying: "I think films once censored shouldn't be questioned. “Films in India have to undergo a rigorous censor and once that's done it's officially passed. “Yes, there will always be people who have issues but they shouldn't take it into the system where the whole idea of
censorship stretches to the extent of being banal. That goes against the logic of censorship. “A team of good thinking people from films feel that a film is not controversial, not troublesome, will not evoke any kind of negativity and is fit to be consumed by people. I think they are the ultimate authority and give that much value to it. “I know a lot of people have very radical ideas about censorship but theirs is the final say."

Shatrughan Sinha in spat over wedding invite
A Bengaluru-based artist Vidushini Prasad has decided to sue the family of actor and BJP functionary Shatrughan Sinha, claiming that the image of Ganesha printed on the wedding invites of his son Kush was lifted from her collection without permission. Kush Sinha's wedding with Taruna Agarwal, the daughter of a prominent NRI family from London, was held in Mumbai on 6th January. Prasad said: "I've spoken to my lawyer. We're not accusing the Sinha family but we will send a notice to them as we don't know which agency designed it for them." Reiterating that monetary issues have not prompted her action, Prasad said: "In the past Delhi University and many others have called me seeking permission to use my paintings on cover pages. I've allowed them to without charging any royalty. But they acknowledged that the artwork was mine." The image used on the invite was a Madhubani-style painting from the signature collection Prasad had done for a city lifestyle store for their Ganesha festival collection last year. "I'd done about 35 paintings for the store. I did not expect a card meant for such a reputed family will be designed by agencies or people who steal. I hope it does not happen with any other artist," she said.
Karan Singh Grover. The movie's trailer received a thumbs up from celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Hrithik Roshan and Arjun Kapoor, as well as from her fans on Twitter. Bipasha Basu has been known for her bold and sexy image, but what’s interesting is her apparent addiction for the horror genre in which she has done six horror flicks in her career.

Shraddha Kapoor under pressure? Shraddha Kapoor doesn't believe in New Year resolutions as she believes that it puts a lot of pressure on her. "The only change I can see is that I will be writing 2015 like everybody. I believe in going with the flow and don't like getting stressed up with New Year resolutions," says
Shraddha, who was delighted to have spent her new year with her mother Shivangi while she was shooting for ‘ABCD 2’ with Varun Dhawan in Las Vegas. "My mum visited me in Las Vegas on New Years. It was really nice to have her there, it completed my New
year," she said excitedly. But the mere mention of her alleged boyfriend Aditya Roy Kapur, and her smile disappears. "What about him? Aditya is a just a friend... at present I am only romancing the camera," she says with fire in her eyes. Hmmmmmm…
Arbaaz Khan talks about his Sonam Kapoor starrer
Arbaaz Khan, who is producing ‘Dolly Ki Doli’ is extremely happy with how things have panned out. "Sometimes when you start making a film you are excited initially, but then you could get disappointed as it may not shape the way you wanted it to. But I am pretty satisfied with ‘Dolly Ki Doli’. “In fact, the final product is looking a little better than what I had expected. It is a wholesome entertainer. It is crisp, fast-paced and more like a drama comedy rather than romcom," says Arbaaz. Praising all the actors, Arbaaz says, all of them - Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pulkit Samrat, have excelled in their roles. "They have taken their characers to another level. They are all hardworking and cooperative," he said, further adding, "Sonam is outstanding, she is wonderful and has lived up to the role. She is professional and down to earth with no tantrums. It is a pleasure working with her. Then Rajkummar is a great actor. Given a good role he takes it to another level. He brings in his own characteristics and nuances." After Dabangg, producing ‘Dolly Ki Doli’ is a big challenge for Arbaaz. "It is not a big set up and there are no huge stars. “It is a different kind of story with a medium range budget. It is a big step for me and if I am able to deliver, it will throw open doors for my production house to flourish. “I want to make popular, mainstream cinema with relatively new people and lesser known stars. As long as I tell a good story, it is fine," says Arbaaz. Talking about his acting career, Arbaaz, who is doing a cameo in Abbas-Mustan's next, says, "I am open to acting roles as long as the character is interesting."

Sachin Tendulkar to debut with biopic After wrapping up a stupendous innings on the cricket pitch, master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is ready to make a splash on the film scene. He will star as himself in a biopic to be released later this year. The yet untitled feature, conceived by Mumbai-based production company called 200 Not Out has been in the works for over a year, in co-ordination with World Sports Group, the firm that manages Brand Sachin. The movie, to be directed by Londonbased writer-filmmaker James Erskine, promises "never seen before facets and footage" on Sachin, said Ravi Bhagchandka, founder of the production company, in a statement. Apart from his presence in the movie,
Sachin will make a lot of contribution to the project, which will capture his phenomenal rise in the world of cricket. The banner 200 Not Out has been filming Sachin's journey for the past year and already collated reels of archival footage. In his career spanning 24 years, the cricketer scored 15,921 runs from 200 matches at an average of 53.78. He also has the most batting records under his belt in Tests and in the 50-over format. Having started as a 16-year-old, the 'Little Master', at five feet five inch, holds the record for the maximum number of appearances and is the highest run-getter and century maker in both versions. He turned out in six World Cups at a stretch, playing a key role first in finishing runnersup in 2003 and winning the Cup in 2011
Esha Gupta shoots for movie theme song
The first look from one of the most anticipated movies of 2015 ‘Baby’, is it’s theme song featuring Esha Gupta. Recently shot, ‘Baby promises suspense, thrill and action, starring Akshay Kumar and directed by the talented Neeraj Pandey. While we are all aware that ‘Baby’ will be a unique film with no songs, Bhushan Kumar’s upcoming high-octane thriller has come up with a novel theme song. The track titled 'Beparwah' reflects the theme of the film and is an ode to the attitude of its characters. The makers recently released the audio track from the movie – ‘Beparwah’ which is catching on social media very rapidly. The gorgeous Esha Gupta, who represents sensuality and glamour that manifests itself in the tone and attitude of the film shot for the theme song with the music composed by Meet Brothers and is directed by Sanjay F Gupta and sung by Apeksha Dandekar, lyrics has been penned by Manoj Muntashir and choreographed by Abhishri Sen. The song which reminisces one of the various on-goings happening in one's country underlines the attitude of the film and like the makers of the film have stated, “History is made by those who give a damn.” A highly stylized set was created especially for the theme song. The set had two distinct looks - one a pristine angelic white setting and the other a sensuous and mysterious play with darkness. Both looks are plush and accentuated go well with the mood of the song.
Arjun Kapoor’s obnoxious; angry young man character in his first film ‘Ishaqzaade’ became quite popular with filmmakers and audiences. While each of his characters, be it ‘Gunday’ or upcoming film ‘Tevar’, appear to be on the same lines, Arjun feels its merely people’s assumption. Says Arjun: “Until you watch the film; you won’t come to know how ‘Tevar’ is different from ‘Ishaqzaade’. There is a difference in their journeys. “Both the characters and stories are altogether different. It’s just people’s assumption that I am playing an angry young man once again, which is incorrect. After looking at one or two shots from the film, people concluded that I am playing angry man in ‘Tevar’.” He adds, “In ‘Ishaqzaade’, I played a character, who is mentally not very happy, lost in his world. It had little grey shades. While in ‘Gunday’, I played a short-tempered, front-footed, arrogant goon. Whereas, Pinto Shukla of ‘Tevar’ is a normal guy, dwelling in a small town, who has not found direction in life. He lives in his own world and gives a damn about others. He is an ordinary boy who gets stuck in extraordinary situation.”

A city that never sleeps, the underworld is at full force, led by a sinister mob that demands obedience and respect. Enter five rebels, who decide that they have had enough of the corruption that has blighted their city, and so decide to unite and expose the corrupt through whatever means necessary. The only thing that stands in their path is a tenacious police officer named ‘Kale’, portrayed by veteran actor Sanjay Dutt. The ensemble cast put on admirable performances, with Emraan Hashmi (The Dirty Picture, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai) taking the helm as the rebel leader ‘Nikhil’. Stunning actress Shraddha Kapoor (Gori Tere Pyaar Mein, Haider) makes a special appearance in an item number not to be missed. Ungli is directed by avant-garde filmmaker and scriptwriter Rensil D’Silva, who is responsible for some of Indian cinemas most thoughtprovoking screen hits, includingKurbaan, Rang De Basanti, Student Of The Year and the Indian version of awardwinning US TV show 24. Perfectly capturing the current mood in India of curbing corruption, bribery and intimidation in the upper echelons of power and authority, Ungli is a beautifully acted and directed narrative that conveys in an effective and humorous manner how five ordinary citizens can make a difference in a city blighted by dark forces, as they literally give the proverbial ‘finger’ to the corrupt and dishonest. Director Rensil D'Silva says it was not easy to direct Sanjay Dutt for upcoming film 'Ungli' at a time when the actor was getting ready to surrender and serve his remaining jail term in the 1993 bomb blasts case.

FXXK! By Steve Maybury info@asianexpress.co.uk
Let’s just say the folks at Ferrari take their jobs very seriously. Ferrari has a new car nicknamed FXX K, this new V12 1021 bhp- beast (yes - start drooling) is actually a product of a new research and development programme. The car is based on Maranello’s first hybrid model. The “K” in its nomenclature actually points to “KERS” which maximises track performance. This is actually a race car version of the latest Ferrari the “La Ferrari”. However, this race car will never be used in competition so it does not follow any race regulations. It is designed for an exclusive group, which Ferrari calls “Client Test Drivers” with whom Ferrari will roll out a test programme over the coming two years. Let’s take a quick look at the FXX K’s numbers.
The car generates a total output of 1021 bhp, 835 bhp of this humongous number is generated by its conventional V12 and the rest 188 bhp is by the electric motor. Maximum torque is said to cross 664 lp-ft. The KERS on board has been upgraded to give the driver an option to control the car in four different modes. These are present on the “Manettino” controller on the centre console. These four modes are “Qualify” for maximum power within a limitied number of laps, “Long Run” for going the distance, “Manual Boost” for instant maximum torque delivery and “Fast Charge” for quick recharge of the battery. With detailed active and passive aerodynamic sections, this is the ultimate machine from Ferrari. The front of the car has a prominent twin profile spoiler with a large splitter. At the back, the tail section is now higher (than LaFerrari) and the mobile spoiler extends
further for a total increase in extension of 60 mm when fully deployed. A vertical fin and a small wing each side of the tail act as guide vanes in the low drag configuration and boost the spoiler’s efficiency in the high downforce one. This system also creates increased downforce at the rear of the car, allowing the use of an extreme diffusion volume for the rear diffuser, which
increases air extraction from the underbody. The result is a claimed 50% improvement in downforce in the low drag configuration and a 30% improvement in the more aggressive downforce configuration, resulting in a figure of 540 kg at 124 mph. Ferrari has confirmed that 40 cars will be built at a cost of €2.5 million each and every single one has been presold.

In the Middle East, highlights included Bahrain (up 50%), Kuwait (up 45%) and Oman (up 27%). Emerging markets such as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Vietnam all showed promising growth. The best-selling Rolls-Royce
dealership in 2014 was Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Abu Dhabi. As part of the marque’s commitment to longterm sustainable growth, six new dealerships were opened in 2014, including Mexico City, Calgary, Canada and Gold Coast, Australia. A total of 127 dealerships are now in operation and further expansion is planned for 2015. Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said: “This fifth consecutive record year saw RollsRoyce Motor Cars break through the 4,000 car sales level for the first time in its 111-year history. “The result confirms that our strategy of balanced, sustainable and profitable growth is delivering and that Rolls-Royce remains the world’s leading luxury goods brand. “This extraordinary success has been built on strong foundations: pinnacle products, dedicated people and a commitment to ensuring a balanced global sales picture.” Sales were driven by strong orders for Ghost Series II, launched in November, and Wraith, which

such as the Maharaja Phantom Drophead Coupé contributed to sustaining its Rolls‑Royce leadership of the industry in the area of individualisation. In 2014, Rolls‑Royce once again sold more cars in the +Euros 200,000 net segment than any other manufacturer. 2014 also marked the first year in which every Phantom, and the great majority of Ghost and Wraith models, left the Home of RollsRoyce at Goodwood in West Sussex, England with significant Bespoke personalisation. A record number of customers spent personal one-on-one time with Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke design consultants commissioning their personalised vehicles. To meet such strong demand, particularly for Bespoke cars, the company has created over 200 new permanent jobs in the past 18 months. More than 1,500 people are now employed at the Home of Rolls-Royce. Further evidence of RollsRoyce’s commitment to expansion
in Great Britain came in September when the company announced plans for its new Technology and Logistics Centre at Bognor Regis, close to Goodwood. Construction of the new 30,000m2 facility, which is due to open in 2016, is well underway and around 200 new and existing staff in technical and logistics roles will be employed at the Centre. Business Secretary, Vince Cable said: “Rolls-Royce motor cars are famous throughout the world with increasing numbers now exported abroad. The skill and dedication of its workers here in Britain has led to another very successful year. “The UK’s automotive industry is thriving with a new car rolling off the production line every 20 seconds, and increasing levels of investment that’s helping to secure local jobs. Through our industrial strategy we are backing companies like Rolls-Royce Motor Cars as they go from strength to strength, giving them the right environment to invest with confidence and create high-skilled jobs”.

Ahead of the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Infiniti raises the curtain on its vision of a premium sports coupe. The striking Q60 Concept is poised to entice coupe fans with its sharp contours and hand-crafted interior, while at the same time suggesting performance and power to match. Result: a no-compromise fusion of looks and speed.
The Q60 Concept sits low and wide in a road-hugging stance hinting at exceptional dynamics and driving pleasure. While the Q60 Concept is fresh and original, it evokes a sense of déjà vu at times with whiffs and traces of the Q80 Inspiration. The audaciously low roofline and quilted leather seats remind one of the elegant full-size Q80 Inspiration, while the aerodynamic gills behind the front wheel arches are inherited

from the Q50 Eau Rouge sports saloon concept. The visual excitement in the edgy lines of the concept is set off by the custom 21-inch wheels, which take up the entire wheel arch. Inspired by jet turbine blades, the black spokes in a combination of mattes and chromes

stretch to the edge of the wheel, further emphasising how “planted” the coupe is. The high-quality ambience inside speaks of Infiniti’s meticulous attention to detail, clearly evident from the impeccable hand-stitched leather to the precise treatment of the carbon fibre accents. Infiniti designers use a variety of leathers on the seats to provide just the perfect balance of comfort and
support as befits a premium sports coupe. They also make the Q60 Concept a genuine “2+2” coupe by giving rear passengers more legroom through the use of genuine sport seats. As a foreshadowing of the next generation of Infiniti’s premium sports coupe, the Q60 Concept makes use of taut lines and sports car cues to convey exceptional stance and presence.
Captivating: Infiniti Q60 Concept

SPEACIAL: Six bespoke models will be produced to celebrate Aston Martin Works’ 60th anniversary
Limited Edition Aston Martin commissions six exclusive sports car to celebrate 60th anniversary
Aston Martin Works, which marks its diamond jubilee in 2015, is celebrating 60 glorious years with the commissioning of six limited edition sports cars. The six bespoke cars, all versions of the current Vanquish super GT in either Coupe or Volante form, are being created in association with the luxury British brand’s Gaydon-based design team, and its ultimate personalisation service: Q by Aston Martin. Each of the six cars will be subtly different, and each is tailored to reflect one of the six decades being celebrated. The result is a collection of rare and ultra-desirable sports cars that will be instantly recognisable as ‘Works 60th Anniversary’ models.
A number of elements distinguish the Anniversary cars including trim and paint colour treatments, but perhaps, the most emotive part of each car comes in the form of a fine detail: bespoke rotaries around the major controls in the centre console of each Vanquish. The process of creating the bespoke Aston Martin Works 60th Anniversary Limited Edition Vanquish models began way back in July of this year, as the Works team met with designers from Aston Martin’s Gaydon HQ to scope out their plans. Unique features in the anniversary cars include: rotaries made from worked metal of a heritage model piston from the relevant era; distinctive Anniversary Yellow accents
on the side strakes and alloy wheels; White/black Duotone seat centre panels; unique sill plaques depicting the era the car relates to and featuring the Works Anniversary logo; distinctive colour and trim treatments that include features such as contrast yellow stitching in the leather, and new heavy weave carbon fibre. The cars of course retain the standard technical features of the Vanquish super GT such as its 6.0-litre V12 petrol engine mated in a pioneering transaxle layout to the latest generation Touchtronic III eightspeed automatic gearbox. This provides the Vanquish with genuinely spirited performance: the 0-60mph time is a mere 3.6 seconds and the maximum speed tops 200mph.
A number of elements distinguish the Anniversary cars including trim and paint colour treatments, but perhaps, the most emotive part of each car comes in the form of a fine detail: bespoke rotaries around the major controls in the centre console of each Vanquish.

Seven at Seven
Kickboxing prodigy continues rise to top By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
There seems to be no stopping the Hollingwood Primary School pupil at the moment who only has his sights set on further excelling in the sport he has been involved for around four years. With tournaments and belts up for grabs in the next 12 months, the young competitor described his blue belt as just his latest achievement. “I enjoy the sparring side of it most and winning,” he said. “When I got my blue belt I was really happy because I had trained really hard for it and didn’t make one mistake. “Now, I just want to just keep training hard and get my brown belt as soon as I can and then get my black belt.”
Bradford’s ‘kickboxing kid’ has continued on his rise to the top in the sport after clinching his seventh belt, a month before his eighth birthday. Esa Hussain, from Great Horton, collected his blue belt in December after flying through his required moves and combinations without a single mistake. In order to earn the belt, a student must successfully complete 24 individual moves and four combinations as well as all previous skills required for his past six belts. Not only did Esa fly through his new moves, but passed with a distinction. The sporting enthusiast’s father, Amjad Hussain, said he was extremely proud of his son’s achievements and would continue to support him in the sport. “He has been telling me for a long time that he wanted his blue belt at seven, and now he has it he is really happy,” he said. “He flew through it really and has previously only got passes so to get a distinction is really special. “There is no stopping him at the moment and he is now really focussed on achieving his next milestone at eightCHAMP: Esa passed his blue belt grading last years-old.” month without any mistakes to earn a distinction

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT – HEAVYWEIGHT BOXER DEONTAY WILDER By Khalil Alam info@asianexpress.co.uk
In the previous history of heavyweight boxing there have been some great heavyweight boxers. However the last great heavyweight boxing champion to emerge from America and dominate the boxing scene seems like a distant past. America is where the heavyweight boxers have resided for many years and the country has produced boxing champions like Muhammed Ali, Joe Louis, Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Jack Johnson, Rocky Marciano and George Foreman to name a few who have dominated the boxing ring with their ability and contributed to the success of the sport to what it is today. British Lennox Lewis and the European Klitschko brothers (Vatali and Wladimir) “changed the American boxing script” and are probably the most recent undisputed heavyweight champions of the world who were not from America. On 17th January 2015 Bermane “B.Ware” Stiverne defends his WBC heavyweight championship against unbeaten American contender Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder. Wilder at 6ft 7inch tall (32-0, 32 knockouts) is confident that he has the ability to beat Stiverne (241-1, 21 knockouts) when they meet at the MGM Grand in Las Vagas, Nevada. Wilder should not
Khalil Alam
underestimate the Haitian national Stiverne who probably has the toughest chin and punch resistance in heavyweight boxing and an excellent left hand counter punch with knockout power. Stiverne is also the more experienced boxer compared to Wilder and has boxed better opposition like his win against Chris Arreola last May. The negative aspects of Stiverne boxing is his height and reach disadvantage when compared to the taller Wilder and I feel that Stiverne will find it hard to connect Wilder with any decisive power shot throughout this bout. Stiverne will be hoping to last the pace and manage to fight into the later rounds of the contest, testing Wilder’s stamina, experience and focus since Wilder has never gone past round 4 in his professional career. In my opinion the Stiverne and Wilder matchup is the most intriguing and exciting heavyweight contest for some time and probably exceeds the night Wladimir Klitschko defeated David Haye back in 2011. This fight should be entertaining, gripping and intense whilst it lasts because both fighters are capable of producing a knockout finish. In Conclusion I recall the words of wisdom from the last big American heavyweight boxer Riddick Bowe during a press conference where he said “A good big man is always better than a good little man.” I expect the American talent and the bigger man on this occasion Wilder to win this fight in the later rounds of the contest by knockout and be crowned the WBC champion of the world. The Wilder win will also make American history by returning the heavyweight championship back to America and restore the countries boxing pride in its heavyweights after almost 6 years of absence.

Yorkshire Marathon returns
MARATHON: Thousands of people took part in last year’s race with another sell-out predicted for this year
Sign up now open for annual challenge At the start of every year, people all over the country make the resolution to ‘get in shape’ and despite initial good intentions, this idea often fails to live up to fruition. However, if there was a reason to get fit, such as a marathon coming up in the future which needed training for, then maybe that extra bit of motivation could push you to achieve your goals. This year, the Yorkshire Marathon returns to York on Sunday 11th October and as of Monday 5th January, sign ups were available to the
general public – the ideal motivator for your fitness goals. Boasting a largely flat and scenic course taking in country lanes, villages and many of York's historic landmarks, the race has quickly established itself as a highlight on the county's sporting calendar. It was a sell out in 2013 - the year the event was first held and all 7,000 places for the 2014 were also quickly snapped up. Speaking on behalf of the City of York Council, Cllr Sonja Crisp, urged people to
sign up now to avoid disappointment. “It's wonderful to be able to welcome the Yorkshire Marathon back for this, it's third year, encouraging yet more people to be more active more often,” she said. “Places are always snapped up very quickly, so don't delay and risk disappointment.” This year’s run is to be staged as part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson CBE, yet runners are able to take part on behalf of any charity of their choice. Siobhan Curtis, Jane
Tomlinson Appeal legacy manager, said: “The Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon has quickly gained a reputation as an excellent event that benefits the vital work of so many worthy causes. “We are extremely grateful to all those people who will take on this challenge in 2015 to raise money for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.” If you would like to stick to your New Year’s resolution this year and start training for a marathon now, visit www.theyorkshiremarathon.c om for sign up details.
FIFA’s prince Blatter set to battle for presidency in 2015
VOTE: Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan wants to take the presidency away from Sepp Blatter for the first time since 1998
For the past 17 years Sepp Blatter has held football’s top job as the president of FIFA yet with just four months until the next election, it appears a Prince is ready to take on the position. Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan, FIFA’s Asia vicepresident who is perceived by many as the leading reformist of the governing body’s executive committee, is going head-to-head with the controversial leader in the 29th May elections. It is the first time since Blatter actually came to presidency in 1998 that he will face a real challenge for his seat. However, the 39-year-old royal
will face a tough battle to beat the 78-year-old Swiss, who was a director on the board before his fellow candidate was even born. Blatter is expected to formally declare his intention to stand for a fifth term before the 29th January nomination deadline despite being engulfed in a number of scandals during his tenure. Until Prince Ali, who has some powerful backers including UEFA president Michel Platini, announced his intentions the only other runner was FIFA's former deputy secretary-general Jerome Champagne. Ashfaq becomes a Lionheart boxiLengedsts’ ar Back page story continued
With another packed calendar ahead of him, he is determined to build on his successes and there is no doubt what his main target for the year is. “This year is all about qualifying for the Olympics for me,” he said. “I had a great 2014, and won my medal at the Commonwealths, but now my focus is on Rio 2016. “I want to win Gold at the Olympics and then look at turning professional, but first I know I must continue working hard to qualify.” The 21-year-old will not have to wait long before attempting to earn his ticket to Brazil after being named in the British Lionheart squad for the upcoming World Series of Boxing (WSB). Teams, representing franchises across the globe, compete in a league format in the WSB, run by the AIBA, that leads to play-offs
and a final. Three competitors are entered in each weight division from each nation with the top ranking boxer at the end of the tournament securing their place in the Olympics. Ashfaq added: “I got told about the tournament about one month ago and am now really looking forward to starting the contest next week with my first fight of the year against the China Dragons. “I have boxed one of their guys before but there are obviously three of them in my weight so I don’t know who it is exactly that I will be facing yet.” The local fighter also praised the setup of the contest which he believes is an ideal structure to help young boxers progress further in the sport. “I think what is happening at the moment in amateur boxing is very promising because it is getting more and more like the

professional sport,” he said. “When fighting in the WSB you have no head gear, you are barechested and each bout is decided by the scores of three judges. “When you do make that step up to the professionals these kinds of tournaments help make you become more aware of what lies ahead.” Ashfaq’s first bout in the WSB will take place at York Hall, London, on Thursday 15th January.

of absorbingly well-argued documents outlining a brighter footballing future if he became FIFA president, it is difficult to see where his votes will come from - especially as Prince Ali has now thrown his hat in the ring. Ali has been backed by many European powers to take on the
role whilst Blatter seems to have the confidence from Asian voters and traditional members. The election will take place at the FIFA Congress in Zurich later this year and is a one-member one-vote process with an outright winner needing two-thirds of the 209 votes cast.
“It is time to shift the focus away from administrative controversy and back to sport. The headlines should be about football, not about FIFA.”

CHAMP: Ashfaq picked up a Silver medal from Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games last year and is determined to go one better at Rio 2016
By Ashley Grint ashley@asianexpress.co.uk
There is no denying that 2015 will be a big year for Team GB’s Qais Ashfaq, and if 2014 was anything to go by, it will be another memorable one for the Commonwealth Silver medallist. Ashfaq, from Leeds, seemed to defeat all that was put in front of him last year, cementing his place as England’s top bantamweight competitor.
