Finding Her Power
“Family is my inspiration. Growing up, I always felt loved and never needing for anything. Above all, I value my family and friends, they have always been my support system in facing the challenges of work and life. Continuous development and growth excites me and drives me to excel.”
Known as “Cheng” in her local chapter, the incumbent executive treasurer of JCI Makati Princess Urduja is far from the average girl. Career-focused and driven by a strong desire for continuous learning and growth, Cheng has worked for top multi-national corporations in the Philippines. She began her corporate career in the fast-moving consumer goods industry by being part of the demanding logistics and marketing team of Coca-Cola Philippines, where she was tasked to ensure product promotions and launches are on schedule. She then acquired more skills and experience at Unilever Philippines, where she took on the role of customer service executive tasked with servicing the company’s supply exports planning to countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Presently, she is taking further studies in Melbourne, Australia, having decided to take a career shift towards the new frontier of Data Science. She describes herself as a numbers person and detail-oriented, and values not only skill but also integrity at the utmost.
“My friends see me as tough on the surface, but deep inside, I am really a softie who goes a long way for the people and things I love.” A passionate soul with a noticeable playful and adventurous side, Cheng loves travelling, water sports, and martial arts. She plays competitively as a second dan black belt in Taekwondo and is also licensed scuba diver. As a woman, she has high standards for herself and is one to never back down from challenges. She dreams of eventually becoming an entrepreneur in the tech and logistics industry.
How Women Can Find Their Power
“A girl becomes a woman when she can stand up for herself, take on responsibilities, and face challenges, all in the pursuit of a sense of identity, purpose, and independence.”
Cheng believes that a modern woman should be self-confident, compassionate, and resilient. They should you do hard things and achieve their dreams, despite of what other people might think or say. “Filipinas get boxed in traditional gender roles. Pangbabae and panglalake. Huwag ka daw mag-martial arts, saying ganda mo kapag nagalusan ka.” Cheng thinks that Filipina women today face rigid stereotypes, gender inequality, discrimination in workplace, and limited opportunities for career advancement. To address this, she encourages women to advocate for their rights, join women’s organizations, seek mentorship, further education, and professional development.
How Jci Empowers Women
Coming from a JCI Family, Cheng believes JCI is a good organization where Filipina women can find not only valuable connections, but also lifelong friends and mentors. “In JCI, a woman can develop her public speaking and presentation skills, lalakas rin ang project management and time management skills nila.” She stresses that JCI doesn’t see someone just based on gender, but rather, sees an individual as a whole who can contribute to the betterment of society and community.
JCI helps women break barriers by exposing them to trainings to developmental programs and trainings. “Here, they will learn how to improve themselves so that they can make an impact in the world through small but sustainable ways.”
