Bradford boy wins selection of books Six-year-old Usman Ali Rashid from Bradford won a selection of books from Bradford Libraries after correctly answering questions in a quiz designed for the Family Learning Festival. Usman received his books (provided by the Booktrust charity) and a certificate at Maningham Library on Tuesday, 20 January. His father Zaroon Rashid said “Usman was very excited to take part in the quiz and was extremely excited when he won it. We went down to Maningham Library together to collect his certificate and the books and he was overjoyed. Usman is now interested in taking part in future events and is looking forward to reading all the books given to him.” The Family Learning Festival, which runs during October each year to promote the benefits of families learning together,

with work at Cliffe Castle, The National Trust at East Riddlesden Hall and TheChildren's University. More than 22,000 visitors took part in the festival which staged over 40 events from 25th October - 2nd November 2014.

Local Fundraiser Hands Over Cheque to stroke unit A former patient has joined forces with her local Rotary Club President to raise money for the hospital ward that looked after her. Fiona Mann, of Addingham, who suffered a spinal stroke in June 2013, has been fundraising for ward 5 at Airedale Hospital over the past nine months, including a mile long sponsored swim and a fundraising stall during the Yorkshire Tour de France, and has raised £2,426.35. Fiona Mann said: "The staff on the unit made such a difference to me when I suffered my stroke but there are so many pieces of equipment that are not classed as essential so the team have to fundraise for

them."Once I began to get back on my feet, I knew I wanted to be able to help the unit support people like me in the best way they could so I pledged to myself that I would fundraise for the unit as my way to say thank you for the support they had given me." Alongside her, new President of the Rotary Club of Ilkley, Dawn Emsley, has chosen the stroke unit as one of her nominated charities during her presidential year and hopes to raise as much as possible for the ward with the help of her fellow Rotarians. Dawn Emsley said: "Fiona's story struck a chord with me and so I decided that when I became president, I would nominate the stroke unit at Airedale Hospital as one of my nominated charities and continue the good work

Fiona has started." She hopes to be able to raise money for the ward at a number of events over the next twelve months, including the recent annual Christmas Holly Ball, which Fiona founded as the Rotaract (young Rotary) Christmas Ball back in the late 80s and was involved in organising until recently. Linda Lawrence, sister on ward 5 at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust said: "We are very grateful to both Fiona and Dawn for supporting the unit in this way. It is particularly pleasing when one of the fundraisers is a former patient as that really does mean something special to the staff here. We would like to thank both Fiona and Dawn for supporting the stroke unit and supporting other local people who have suffered a stroke."

Tower of London Poppy - Gift for Bradford Citizens One of the poppies from the Tower of London art installation has gone on permanent display in City Hall. The poppy was purchased by Bradford Council’s Lord Mayor’s Office as a gift to the citizens of the Bradford district. The Lord Mayor Councillor Mike

Gibbons said: "The poppies at the Tower of London captured everyone’s imagination and were a poignant reminder of those who died in the First World War. Having a poppy for Bradford will serve as a permanent tribute to those from across our district who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War and in subsequent conflicts. We wanted the people of the district to have the opportunity to see this piece of history.” The poppy is one of 888,246 which formed the Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red installation at the Tower of London marking the centenary of the First World War. The mayor posed for pictures with the poppy at civic hall before it was displayed.

Education

VALUING OUR TEACHERS When talking to people whose roots are from Pakistan and India I have been struck in recent weeks by the huge difference in the esteem given to Teachers in those nations, whose education systems still bear the hallmarks of many English teachers. In recent years, there has been constant change in the education system, both in structures and in how teachers are told to teach, and what is to be taught. It is worth a look at the morale and standing key people who work to educate our children. It hit home when my step son, after four years teaching in a Manchester School ; working to transform lives, who loved ‘the job’ left due to the impact of the exam changes upon his class . Add to that seventy hour weeks, not knowing what he would earn from year, no autonomy in his work, and the impact of constant changes in Ofsted inspections. The issue of stress and workload has got to the point where it is now the biggest issue facing Education and is holding back all our plans to focus on achievement. In many schools all staff has taken a pay hit. Small wonder we face a loss of good teachers; we cannot afford to continue like this. Pay progression linked to a performance system that is often arbitrary in its implementation to the point that some schools have seen virtually no teachers’ progress.

Surveys reveal a very worrying picture • 52% of teachers are less likely to stay in the profession because of changes to teachers’ pay and pensions. • 57% are less likely to stay because of changes to teachers’ conditions. • 93% of teachers believe academies and free schools should employ teachers with Qualified teacher status. Listening to heads and teachers I fear the last four years of blaming, scapegoating and constant targeting of the teaching profession has hurt the standing of teachers in society and morale. More worrying is the talk I pick up from time to time of teachers and heads, facing some parents who taken on the blame culture that Mr Gove the former Education Secretary excelled in, and turn on the class teacher. A local head recently described to me how a parent whose child had been affected by the GCSE re- grading scandal , and believed his child should get 5 A* to C, took his anger out on the staff of the school when the child did not hit that target ; the dialogue about the child’s own needs and journey became impossible . It left both parties upset. They should be allies. The recent media narrative has been deeply damaging, if your kid is not a success it’s fault of teachers. Transforming results and securing better education for kids of all abilities needs creative and

innovative teachers. Our Children entrusted to improve apply its skills and build on effective work and not subject to arbitrary whims and zig zags in policy.

ARE WE SO BLINDED BY OUR DIFFERENCES THAT WE CAN'T SEE WHAT UNITES US?

@EditorAsianSun

I was recently invited on the panel for a JUST West Yorkshire public Question and Answers session on community and civil society responses to the Paris Killings. The main purpose of the open debate was to hear the ordinary voices of the person on the street that had been missing from the international, national and regional coverage of recent events. Being away from work for over the last fifteen months due to sickness had made me somewhat a recluse and initially I declined to join the panel, as I wasn’t fully ready to be back in the public spotlight. But then a thought crossed my mind - this wasn’t work, this is life. In the wake of the Paris attacks on 8 January early this year it seems the Muslim community (a community I proudly belong to) is at the forefront of controversy, yet again. Whilst every member of the Muslim community I have spoken to has categorically and unequivocally condemned the terrorist murders of the Charlie Hebdo journalists, judging by the Communities Minister, Eric Pickles recent letter to religious leaders, the spotlight still seems to be solely on the Muslim

community to rid the world of terrorism and extremism. That’s why such open public debates organised by JUST West Yorkshire, in partnership with Sharing Voices and Bradford Muslim Women’s Forum, are so important for tackling such emotionally charged issues. The Director of JUST West Yorkshire, Ratna Lachman opened the debate to the packed out hall, by condemning the terrorist murders of journalists by the Kouachi brothers. However she highlighted the failure of the press and media to acknowledge the bravery of Lassana Bathilly, a Muslim employee who risked his life and led Jewish customers in a Jewish supermarket to safety. She also pointed out that the sacrifice of Ahmed Merabet, the Muslim policeman who died in the line of duty protecting the Charlie Hebdo office, had been largely ignored. Ratna went on to say that terrorism does not discriminate: “The victims of the Charlie Hebdo attack were Muslims as well as white journalists. So it’s important we remember that terrorism does not respect anybody.” Ratna warned against pitting the Paris killings as a western ‘Us’ and a Muslim ‘Them and said that such a “dangerous binary is polarising and implies that somehow Islam is incompatible with western values and the freedom of expression. We know

that the victims of the Arab spring were fighting for those same freedoms that the Charlie Hebdo journalists died for. So it’s important we don’t pose this dangerous binary that divides communities.” There was general agreement from the audience that the attacks had impacted profoundly on the Muslim community and it wasn’t down to Muslims to apologise for terrorist murders they were not responsible for.

General agreement from audience that it wasn't down to Muslims to apologise for terrorist murders they were not responsible for

www.asiansunday.co.uk There were powerful testimonies of women in hijab being targeted in the immediate aftermath of the Paris killings and there was genuine fear that hate crime would increase. The failure of world governments, including our leaders to acknowledge the murder of innocents in Peshawar and Nigeria by terrorist groups highlighted double standards in the West's response to terrorist murders. Gordon Clubb, who is a lecturer in International security at the University of Leeds and Director for the Terrorism & Political Violence Association said “90% of the people who are killed are Muslims so when you look at groups like the ISIS, I don’t think anyone would agree with them. It’s about understanding and appreciating different identities”. Alyas Karmani, Chair of JUST West Yorkshire, highlighted that it was outrageous to accuse 1.6 billion Muslims of being inherently violent. He warned that it risked creating a divisive narrative of a clash of civilisations and reminded the audience that ‘1.4million people that have been killed as a result of the war on terror are Muslims, however, 5% of the nonMuslims who have died have received 95% of the coverage.” Alyas highlighted Western culpability in the rise of terrorism across the world. He argued that both the war on terror and terrorist attacks are part of “a multi-billion pound arms industry”. While groups like “ISIS, like Boko Haram and Taliban should be condemned” he urged the audience to remember that” the biggest victims of these groups happen to be Muslims”. So we need to change that paradigm to one which normalises rather than exceptionalises Muslims.” The exchanges made me reflect on the difficult issue of whether it is ever possible to balance the freedom of speech with the right to offend the Muslim community. As a newspaper editor, I fully support freedom of speech, but I firmly believe that rights come with responsibilities. . If you intentionally report knowing you will cause offence to a community, you should expect there to be a backlash. However in the case of

ISSUE 75 , the journalists paid dearly with their lives and I am outraged at the spilling of innocent blood. The taking of human lives cannot be condoned in the Islamic faith and it belittles the Prophet’s legacy. I recall an incident in 2012, when one of my entertainment reporters covered an interview with the lead actor of the film, Midnight’s Children. The film adaptation of the book, written by Salman Rushdie in 1981, dealt with India’s transition from a British colony to an independent country following the partition of the British India. I was personally targeted by a few hundred readers in a hostile social media campaign and accused of promoting Salman Rushdie against whom a fatwa had been declared.. They felt that I had insulted Muslims by promoting Rushdie’s work in my newspaper, despite the fact that I had not made any reference to the contents of Midnight’s Children in the article and was only seeking to establish why the lead actor had chosen to star in a film written by a controversial writer. I was told that if I did not apologise they would call for a boycott of my paper and there would be a burning session of our newspapers outside my office. The campaign against my paper and the personal threats went on for weeks and I was accused of being anti-Islam despite being a strong adherent of my faith. We ultimately resolved this in a spirit of open dialogue and through joint discussions I came to understand why they would take offense to the promotion of Salman Rushdie’s work and they understood that there was no malice or desire to offend. My detractors and I have since worked together on many issues affecting communities and we have developed a constructive working relationship. The incident although harrowing for me at the time and offensive to them, created an opportunity to have a dialogue and understand one another better and today there is mutual respect and support. As a Muslim community we have

come a long way from the Salman Rushdie ‘Satanic verses’ incident in 1989. The Muslim community make up a third of the world population contrary to what we read in some of the papers. We are a peaceful, law abiding, wellintegrated and philanthropic community. Despite painting Muslims as un-British, recent polls have shown that British Muslims are more patriotic than any other faith group. The invasion of Britain First into our mosques in May 2014 is a clear example of our tolerance towards injustice and provocation. The continuous attacks on our beloved prophet and our faith and the continuous apologies we are expected to make for the very small minority of terrorists who kill in the name of Islam, is unreasonable. We mourn the 95% of Muslim lives that have died in the war on

07

terror just as we mourn the lives of non-Muslims who have been killed by terrorists. The issue of extremism and terrorism is going to be with us for a long time to come and we have many challenges ahead of us. My own experience in the Midnight’s Children episode, gives me optimism that we can find unity in difference. That too was the message of the important meeting I was present at: there was a call for Muslim unity and tolerance and there was also a clear appeal to broader civil society and the government to stand alongside its Muslim community. As the Chair of the meeting, Ratna Lachman reminded us in her closing statement: “We have one world, one humanity and one life and we all have a personal responsibility to create a just, equal and peaceful world.”

Marking Golden Jubilee of Bradford's first Sikh Temple

By Ninder Kaur

and an MSc in economics from Bradford University.Ramindar explained the reason for why he put on this lecture. “50 years is a very long time since a community started. . So there comes a time where you need to take a look back to see the changes that have been made, what we have learnt from them and what the challenges ahead are for the future. This is what I wanted to address and I can only hope that I did it well enough.”

@NinderAsNews

A lecture took place in Bradford this week to mark the Golden Jubilee of the first Sikh temple in Bradford. The open-door event was held at the Bradford Local Studies Library on Wednesday and was led by Dr Ramindar Singh MBE. As the first elected secretary for Bradford’s first Sikh temple, Ramindar felt responsible to share the history of the Sikh community in the Bradford district over the past 50 years. It was a very informative lecture which explained how the first Sikh temple was established by a small number of Sikhs in a former carpet warehouse in Garnett Street in 1965. Although the building no longer exists, there are now seven Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) in the Bradford district to accommodate the estimated 3,500 Sikhs living here. Attendees had the opportunity to take a close look at the growth and development of Sikh temples and other organisations. It was a real eye opener to hear about the processes of integration as well as the contributions made by Sikhs in general and civic life. One man in particular, Dr Balbir Singh was very impressed with the outcome of the lecture and said: “Ramindar has put a lot of effort into his research. He told me things that I didn’t know before, like how Sikh migrants came over in 1950s. I thought it was the 60s. It was good to see how he openly addressed the struggles that Sikhs faced in detail.” Caroline Brown, Development Officer for Local Studies Libraries added: “It was fascinating to listen about how the first Gurdwara started off 50 years ago in a carpet warehouse. It is an amazing story about how things have changed so rapidly.

Following the lecture, a Q&A took place and the audience members had the opportunity to ask any questions they had. Winston Williams, a Senior Chess Coach, was one of many that managed to take a lot away from the lecture. “I was very fascinated by the lecture because I love history and religion, and not only that but I got to learn about where I live. Any questions that I had were answered, so it was a real eye opener.” Overall, the lecture seemed to be a success among those who attended. “It was a very well organised and researched lecture. I learnt a lot about Sikh migrants settling down here in Bradford. He identified everything from the very beginning,” said Bradford businessman Mohinder Singh Khinda.

First Sikh temple in 1965 It provided a real insight into some of the issues different communities face and the challenges they may have ahead.” Despite the snowy weather conditions that took place, Ramindar was very impressed with the turnout. “It’s nice to see people have risked life and limb to come here and learn about the Sikh community in Bradford.” Ramindar is the Head of Contemporary Studies at Bradford College for many years and was awarded an MBE for his services to community relations and has authored several books. He holds an MA from the Punjab University

OPINION POLL - GEORGE GALLOWAY MP WEST

BRADFORD

Bradford East is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2010 by Liberal Democrat David Ward. The constituency originally existed from 1885 to 1974 and was recreated for the

2010 general election. Following a 2007-2009 review of parliamentary boundaries in West Yorkshire, the Boundary Commission for England the Bradford North constituency was abolished and Bradford East

Community centre in Bradford West

created. The wards in this constituency are entirely within Bradford city boundaries: Bolton and Undercliffe, Bowling and Barkerend, Bradford Moor, Eccleshill, Idle and Thackley and Little Horton and have an electorate of around 67k

rOLE OF MP'S The UK public elects Members of Parliament (MPs) to represent their interests and concerns in the House of Commons. MPs are involved in considering and proposing new laws, and can use their position to ask government ministers questions about current issues. MPs split their time between working

in Parliament itself, working in the constituency that elected them and working for their political party. Some MPs from the governing party (or parties) become government ministers with specific responsibilities in certain areas, such as Health or Defence. When Parliament is sitting (meeting), MPs generally spend their time

working in the House of Commons. This can include raising issues affecting their constituents, attending debates and voting on new laws. In their constituency, MPs often hold a 'surgery' in their office, where local people can come along to discuss any matters that concern them.

DAVID WARD MP LIBERAL DEMOCRATS David Ward Liberal Democrats Elected Bradford East MP: 2010

David Ward became the MP for Bradford East in the 201 General Elections after being a councillor for Idle and Thackley ward in Bradford for 26 years. In July 2013 he was suspended from the Liberal Democrats Parliamentary party until

September 2013 after questioning the continuing existence of the state of Israel and refusing to apologise for his remarks. Many of Mr Ward's constituents have commended him on his consistant support for Palestinian people even if it has resulted in going against his

own Party. Once again David Ward has been in the limelight for his controversial Tweet ' Je Suis Palestine' shortly after the recent Paris massacre. With the elections coming up in May, we took to the streets to find out what the people of Bradford East thought of their MP.

WORD ON THE STREET Paul Johnson,28

We asked: 1. What do you think of David Ward as an MP? 2.Do you think he will win the election this year and why? 3. What did you make of his Palestine Tweet ‘Je Suis Palestinian’ shortly after the march of solidarity that took place in France?

"I think David Ward does a lot for the community. He listens to the people in the area and he does his best at representing them. I get that the march was for freedom and it was freedom that he expressed in his tweet. Fair play to him. There are too many double standards in today’s day and age."

Romana Shah, 37

"I think he is a good candidate for what he represents, but I am a Labour voter and I will be voting Labour this year. It’s about time Labour made a comeback. I am sick of all this Conservative and Lib Dem leadership. They don’t know what they are on about half of the time and when they do they end up in the deep end. And that tweet just said it all."

Susan Price, 66

Inderjit Dulku, 42

“He’s a nice chap. "He is very involved He goes that extra as an MP. I have mile at helping emailed him a couple people in the of times for certain community. He’s things and he’s not all talk like the always quick at rest of the MPs in the city. WORD ON THE STREET Pritam Dhesi, 54,

"He has gone down in my estimations. He lets his mouth run away with him. He needs to know when to put a lid on it. He has done a good job at putting the Lib Dems back on the map and for all the wrong reasons. You would think he would have more sense. ´ Reece Crompton, 31

"All I can say iswhat you see is what you get with him. He should have bit his tongue before he took to Twitter though. Hopefully this will be a learning curve ´ Nick Daniels, 41

"His tweet made him look like a bit of a plonker to be honest. He is losing track of his locality. He should be focusing on Bradford and tweeting about Bradford. He needs to stay out of other people’s business before he ends up in hot water.´ Charlie Piper, 49

"David Ward a man of all talk isn’t he. His tweet turned into a bit of a car crash really. For his action, I think that he should be suspended as an MP. We put power in his hands and he makes himself look like a fool. He ought to know better.´

Prashant Chavda, 39

Harriet FitzgeraldParker, 65

³I saw that his tweet was mentioned in Parliament and that he had to apologise for what he said. There’s a time and a place and as a leader he should know that more than anyone. After this, let’s see if he manages to get enough votes because he is a good man. He’s just a bit foolish at times. It’s all down to the public whether they want someone like this to represent them´

³I like David Ward. He is very helpful and is always there when you need him. He listens to what the community wants. I do think he has a chance of winning just because he can gain votes on his popularity. I thought the tweet he made was a little inconsiderate when the focus at the time was on the Paris attacks. I don’t think it was much of a bigger deal than it was made out to be because all he was doing was reminding people of that incident. It’s good to see that he is not afraid to speak up. "

Kiran Kaur, 23

"David Ward is a good MP. I have met him before and he is a nice guy. He’s a man that knows what he is talking about and shows interest in what the public have to say. I will support him and he has a good enough chance to win the election than anyone else who will be standing. His tweet hasn’t changed my mind about him as a person. It was his tweet on his personal account so he is entitled to express his own opinions.´

Zahra Iqbal, 22

"He’s okay. He’s not the best politician out there. But he is okay for his people, so each to their own. I wouldn’t mind if he wins but I would like to see a change and see what another politician can offer us. His tweet was slightly irrelevant to what was happening at the time. He could have saved it for another day. ´

11

We asked: Your thoughts on David Ward MP for Bradford East Arthur Holden, 71

"I can’t stand the man or the Lib Dem party for that matter. They are confused about what they believe in and what they portray to the public isn’t very appealing. I wouldn’t think he has a chance of winning especially when Labour is the most desired party in this area. I hope he doesn’t win. His tweet was stupid and made no sense as to why he would mention Palestine when it was all about Paris. When it was Palestine’s time they got enough attention and press coverage. Let Paris have theirs." Robert Brighton, 35

"I am not a big fan of his so I don’t think he should win this year’s elections. His tweet was a bit controversial. In fact it was a bit offensive to be honest. The way that it was written showed that he was mocking it. I heard that Nick Clegg was to take further action, so I don’t know why he has been let him off so easily. It’s not the first time he has been suspended for comments made about Israel. You think he would learn from his mistakes. The people of Bradford have yet once again put their trust in the wrong hands.´

Chazmin Patel ,35

³I’ve never met the man but I like him. I like the fact that he cares for his constituents without being fake about it like some politicians are. And yes he does have a good chance of winning if he continues to help and support the people. His tweet wasn’t very sensitive towards the victims and the victim’s families of the Paris attack but that doesn’t make him a bad guy for addressing it. Kudos to him for trying.´ Waseem, 26

"He’s pretty good. He helps out a lot of people. He is one of the rare people who actually listen to what we have to say. I don’t know about his chances of winning. With our Asian lot around here they look at what is promised and all they want is promises. Right now, there is a big hype about the Respect party so who knows what can happen. At the end of day, it’s what he’s got to say and he is entitled to what’s on his mind. He could have approached it better though.´

Gavin Foster, 27

“I was thinking about voting for him but since he has been in the news recently about his tweet, I might have to reconsider. It was obvious to see that David was trying to appeal to a particular people in j his constituency, by writing out that tweet. I hope there are enough people to recognise he is not fit to represent them.” Joshua Stuart, 33

"Lib Dem are dead in the water. They have got no chances of winning especially when you have David Ward representing you. I don’t believe in what he stands by and I think Bradford East needs a new politician, one which is not upsetting people with stupid tweets.´ Mary Boyle, 68

"I quite like him actually. I have spoken to him and he seems a nice man. I don’t know if he will win because he’s put his foot in it recently. His tweet was not very nice. I don’t like upsetting anyone and I think he did upset people, so he shouldn’t have done that.´

WITH DAVID GREEN, LEADER OF BRADFORD COUNCIL By Aalia Khan

B

@AaliaAsNews

eing the leader of Bradford Council has its own set of responsibilities, pressures and requirements. David

Green however, has taken on these challenges in his stride and works hard to improve his City. Green believes that along with the pressures of the job he also gains great rewards such as “The ability to deliver benefits on the ground for people of the district.” Being the Leader of the council differs from being a frontline councillor or MP,

Green agrees with this and says “It’s a different role from being a front line councillor and a ward councillor, although I do that aswel. And it’s certainly different from being an MP who has an even more strategic role.” He also goes on to explain that at times the council have to deal with the repercussions of the decisions made by the MP’s which is not always convenient, “Quite often as a council we have to deal with the reality of the decisions that MP’s make and to be blunt, I think sometimes MP’s don’t actually recognise what the reality of decisions they make on the ground is

going to be.” When asked about the upcoming May elections Green was confident that the Labour party would be successful is gaining the majority in Bradford as they can “Justifiably claim to have delivered on the promises made at the last election or the ones before that.” However he does acknowledge that “National issues are going to bear a part in how people decide to cast their vote.” Green also stated that the “Failure of sitting M to deliver anything for Bradford” and the Labour party’s “Record of local delivery” have increased their chances in securing a win in Bradford this year. Bradford has faced severe spending cuts consisting of £160million since 2010, and another £130million projected for the next 5 years, however Green says that the council will “Protect universal services but also ensure that the most vulnerable get the support they need.” Additionally they will invest in a way that helps people move forward from living in deprivation and poverty. That includes improving education and skills, creating jobs and improving infrastructure, “All of which we are in

the process of doing” says Green. According to Green it is easier to invest in short-term services but if Bradford is to move forward as a district we need to have people who are “Well educated with flexible skills and be able to support people wanting to invest in the district to create those jobs. That will create wealth and income for the local population, growth in the economy, improvement in skills base and education and we need good quality affordable housing.” Bradford has moved ahead over the last few years and Green says these achievements can be seen with the progress of the Westfield shopping centre, giving the Odeon new life, investment in Keighley and Shipley, building more houses and improving the education sector by identifying and addressing certain challenges. Bradford West Respect MP George Galloway has been controversially

known for his public statements, one such statements of reducing councillors in Bradford rendered this response from Cllr Green “George Galloway has views on many things most of which I disagree with. If Mr. Galloway engaged in any way shape or form with local councillors and council he may have a different view, but I just believe that it’s one of his populist statements and I’d rather spend time discussing with him the real issues facing this district and what he can do about it.” Green has warmly extended this invite to Galloway in the past to meet up but “Unfortunately he’s never been willing to engage so I’ve never had the opportunity” He says. The offer still stands should Galloway which to take it up. To sum up Bradford Cllr Green says it is a “Complicated” City but it is “A district that has punched below its weight for too long and is now

moving forward and being recognised regionally and nationally as the city with one of the fastest growing economies in the region. But we need to continue to move forward and build on the successes.” Things you didn’t know about Cllr David Green: • Favourite Food? Anything edible, as long as no carrots in it • Favourite Hobby? IS GYM WEAR THE NEW JEANS?

By Ninder Kaur

@NinderAsNews

It seems like everyone has been swapping jeans for gym wear recently.

But why is it that this casual clothing trend is popping up everywhere we turn?

Gone are the days when you would be struggling to find a cute top to match your newly purchased ripped/high-waisted/skinny jeans. With the New Year commencing everyone seems to be obsessing about getting into shape and looking fashionable whilst doing so.

Well not long ago, it was considered quite a faux pas to be seen running around town in your workout pants and trainers—unless, of course, you lived somewhere like LA or Miami, where it’s always been acceptable to flaunt that beach-ready body all the time. But with sporting apparel being everything from comfortable, affordable, versatile and stylish, active wear is no longer just for the gym. So it’s no surprise that everyone is bringing out new ranges of luxe hoodies, stretch pants etc to not only makes us look good but feel good whilst on the move.

Many of you have already sworn by how 2015 heralds a new year of fitness. And what better way to kick-start your new regime than with a new revamped wardrobe of gym attire, to keep you dedicated and motivated to your promise. Once-popular shell suits and leg warmers are thankfully a thing of the past. Even baggy tees and old leggings have even been pushed aside because quite simply, they are just not good enough to sweat in anymore. Sportswear in general is becoming rather more stylish in its own right (even outside the gym). It’s all thanks to high-street stores wanting a piece of the action, that there’s now no need to spend an arm and a leg. Adidas and Nike can move over because there are new alternatives in town.

This so-called fashion style is all thanks to the Americans who push to live a more active lifestyle, and we being the sheepish individuals we are, we have decided to copy.

Whereas workout clothes once relegated to the back of the closet, they are rapidly moving to the front of the fashion scene. In 2014, we saw Alexander Wang’s collection for H&M take the country by

It’s also down to the likes of Topshop who recently announced that they are embarking on a joint venture with Beyonce to create a “global athletic streetwear brand” this Autumn. Rihanna even managed to bag herself a deal with Puma, so it’s no wonder when global pop stars like these bring out their ranges that we want to be part of it too. It gives us the impression that if we wear these clothes we feel equally as fit as the ladies.

storm. It was a collection which optimised sports chic and was sold out within a matter of hours.

Mainstream designers like Stella McCartney and Alexander Wang jumped onto this fitness chic bandwagon, introducing clothing lines

with everything from costly leggings to $100+ zip-front hoodies. With so many people interested in fitness right now who can blame them for equipping us with the best of the best. With fashion houses being a little out of our price range, nationwide retailers like New Look, Primark and Victoria Secret have all got in on the action too. Designs include details of lace and mesh panelling making it somewhat preferable choice to that

Anastasia Wilson, a 27 year old assistant, says- “I actually prefer shopping for workout gear than jeans and dresses. It’s much more comfy and stylish. There is so much to choose from- everything from sports bras, to trainers to choosing matching socks. I don’t know how I survived wearing jeans every day. This trend is definitely going to take off this year thanks to fitness fanatics. Who knows, soon enough we might be going to work in tank tops and joggers.” Women are spending hundreds of pounds on athletic clothing with the intention of not actually having to workout. In our heads, we have latched onto the idea that if you wear workout clothes (like half of these celebrities posing on Instagram) then you are more obliged to work out. You feel a lot more attractive knowing that you have the intentions of living a healthier lifestyle and wanting people to know that you are trying to become fit. As we have become a generation that is always ‘on-the-go’, fashion houses have had to adapt to our lifestyle. It is for that reason that these clothes supposedly give us more function without compromising style. Ladies, it’s about time you shift those jeans aside as it is obvious to see that gym clothes have become the new uniform of 2015. Note that if you deem yourself as a gym junkie or not, you’ll be dressing like one soon enough.

one pair of trusty black leggings you’d always be sporting. Even online retailers (popular for their “stylish” clothes) are not ones to fall behind as Missguided Active and boohooFIT have introduced their new chic collection for 2015. “It’s great that everyone is introducing new collections and that fitness is taking over the fashion world. I like that it has become almost cooler to be comfortable and athletic than to be overly glamorous,” said Laurie Malone a gym enthusiast from Bradford. With only a month into the new year, we have already seen how people have swapped blouses for fitted vests , heels for sneakers and cardigans for hoodies. There was a time when you would be embarrassed to step out and be seen in this gear, but no one seems to bat an eye lid anymore. Who knew that yoga pants and neon sports bras would become the ‘it’ fashion staple.

Beauty tips with Naseem of Arden Clinic.

We’re part way through January now. Lack of sleep, exercise and oodles of ‘convenience’ food; the spirit of a New Year resolution has already started to crumble, reflecting destructively on my skin. Juggling a career, a home and more importantly two overcharged children, two minutes a day on a skin care regime seems like an overwhelming chore. I am the first to admit I occasionally don’t love my skin the way I should. It is known that in your twenties your skin cells turn over every 28 days, but this is reduced further from the age of 30 to 40 where skin cells regenerate every 40 days. That means as we stack on the years, extra effort is a must. More certainly though, I accomplish quality ME time. With beauty products infiltrating the market, where do you start? Me, I’m sticking with the old classics, a thorough weekly facial. Skincare doesn’t have to be a tedious task. Sit back, enjoy and let the experts do all the hard work. Here are five top non-surgical facial treatments available at Arden Clinic. Treatment offers are at affordable prices yet with visible and valuable results

• 24ct Gold Facial Feel like a queen with this unspoilt treatment at only £49. The 24ct Gold speckles promotes anti-aging; smoothing them uninvited wrinkles, whilst the plant Collagen boosts a brighter complexion. Smoother skin reflects light which gives your complexion a radiant glow. This is a huge winner with the celebrities.

• Medical Microdermabrasion At a modest £30, this is a weekly must. Microdermabrasion is a mechanical form of skin exfoliation using diamond cut and suction. Strong exfoliating techniques deal with the upper layers of the skin whilst stimulating collagen growth in the lower layers. Preventing fewer breakouts of them ghastly spots and reducing pigmentation.

• Laser Carbon Facial Now that you have velvet touch skin, it’s time to give it that glowing and dewy boost. At £49 this upcoming revolutionary approach to Laser enhancement shatters dirt and free radicals that upset our skin whilst working its magic in the deeper layers.

• Derma Roller Relieves scarring, blemishes and even bumpy skin. This Hollywood treatment is not for the light headed though exceptionally worthwhile. With Micro-needling, expect to see more youthful look, clearer and healthier skin and best of all, reasonably priced at £195.

• Arden Signature Facial Now this is one way to prevent our cheeks and chins heading down south.

This has been voted a no1 choice by patients who see results off the back of Radio frequency technology to benefit slack skin and at a treatment cost of £120. This all goes without saying but for the record, step up the game by eating and drinking smarter. Repeatedly drinking caffeine toppled with chocolate biscuits, jam-packed with sugar will only have a toll on our skin. Not only does it dehydrate the skin, it reduces the production of collagen and elastin that keeps our skin looking healthier and plush. More importantly balance the body’s PH levels with lots of water before and after meals, eating vegetables and healthy sugar contained in fruit. If all this sounds tiring, take a nap – that will certainly do the trick.

Gauri Khan to design Satya Paul’s 30th anniversary line Fashionista Gauri Khan, entrepreneur and wife of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, will lend her creativity to Satya Paul to mark the fashion brand’s 30th anniversary. She says it will reflect her personal style. “My signature line of clothing for Satya Paul will showcase a distinctive aspect of my own personal style. Co-creating and endorsing a line for one of India’s finest brands will be a new experience for me,” Gauri, whom is also a successful interior designer, said in a statement. Her debut clothing and accessories collection for Satya Paul is called ‘A Tropical Wonder’. Gauri will put together must-have pieces inspired by her signature style as a part of the collaboration, which is slated to launch with a SpringSummer 2015 line to be retailed across Satya Paul flagship stores, starting February. The offerings in her line are inspired by an exotic holiday, and the creations explore lush prints rendered on casual and occasional wear separates like sheer tunics, flowing kaftans, shift dresses and saris. The colour pallete is a mix of aquatics, pastels and fresh citrus interpreted in the brand’s signature style of abstract line art and digital painting. Gauri’s collection is shaping up to be a celebration of all things luxurious and chic, says Sanjay Kapoor, managing director of Genesis Colors, the holding company for Satya Paul.

“It has been extremely exciting to involve Gauri Khan in this project, something completely different from what we have done before. She has a distinct aesthetic, apart from being a veritable fashion icon,” he added. The line by the mother of three -- sons Aryan and AbRam and daughter Suhana, is targeted at the young Indian woman.

Jennifer Aniston reveals her struggle with dyslexia Actress Jennifer Aniston has spoken about about her desire to start a family with fiance Justin Theroux and her struggle with dyslexia. Aniston, who is on the cover page of The Hollywood Reporter magazine, even shared her thoughts on her split from actor Brad Pitt that led to a persistent love triangle story involving Angelina Jolie as well, apart from addressing her Oscar snub this year.

Meanwhile, she also revealed that she grew up with dyslexia but didn’t know it until her early 20s. “I thought I wasn’t smart. I just couldn’t retain anything. Now I had this great discovery. I felt like all of my childhood trauma-dies, tragedies, dramas were explained,” she said. Addressing her Oscar snub, Aniston said: “I know a lot of people were sorry. I feel I’ve gotten such wonderful love -- I had almost more phone calls and flowers than I did for any other nomination (in the past).”

“That’s a topic that’s so exhausted,” she said when asked if she wants to have a baby. “I get nervous around that, just because it’s very personal. Who knows if it’s going to happen? It’s been a want. We’re doing our best. We don’t have a date, (but) I wouldn’t tell you if we did,” she added. Considering her failed marriage to Pitt, she said: “We’re not in daily communication. But we wish nothing but wonderful things for each other. Nobody did anything wrong. You know what I mean? It was just like, sometimes things (happen).” Aniston then blasted the persistent love triangle story that pits her against Jolie. “If the world only could just stop with the stupid, soapopera bullsh*t. There’s no story. I mean, at this point it’s starting to become - please, give more credit to these human beings.” Now happily engaged, she couldn’t ask for a better fiance. “It was his humour, mainly. He’s the easiest guy to hang around. He was so completely in his skin. It was the first time I remember being so comfortable (with a romantic interest), like with all my gay friends,” she said of Theroux.

ALBUM REVIEW

Highflyers Album Review

NINDER KAUR @NinderAsNews Last year, we saw Highflyers return with their second album release, and it was about time that I put their hard work under the lens to see whether it deserves a thumbs up. “Born Desi” saw brothers Gurj and Indie making the transition from The Sound Pipe Records to the influential VIP label. Their now current album features 14 deadly tracks to keep Bhangra fans moving and shaking. The album features a string of artists from Bakshi Billa, Meet Malkit to Jaswant Heera and the late Kaka Bhaniawala. The duo’s first album released in 2011 featuring singles like ‘Daru Naal Yaari’ , ‘The Shinda Duet’ and the very popular ‘Baa Farke’. Three years later with enough time to learn and grow as artists, the duo are on top form creating a buzz with their ‘Aaja Hun’ and ‘Shera Varge’ authentic folk bangers. The lads have not fallen short from providing you with traditional elements that represent their Punjabi roots and music style in every song that they have produced. The impressionable track ‘Pyar Tere Naal’ featuring Jaswant Heera is one that will definitely not disappoint.

This easy listening track will put you at ease whilst it evokes the message of love in its lyrics written by Bhinder Khanpuri. A personal favourite of mine is the ‘Gulabi Suit (Remix)’ featuring Meet Malik. The lyrics in the song are very catchy and the overall melody of the track is very addictive. This guaranteed dance floor favourite will be one that you’ll soon have on a repeat, even just after a few seconds of listening. What makes this album special is that the boys have included a massive track ‘The Manak Tribute’ with vocals by the very talented Pargat Khan (nephew of the late Kuldeep Manak Ji). The track manages to captivate listeners with Pargat’s passionate delivery and the inclusion of the 1981 classic ‘Banoti Yaar’. It’s nice to see how Indie and Gurj have paid their respects to someone who can only be described as a legend in the Bhangra industry. What’s new to the album is that the brothers have managed to extend their sound by finally utilising a female vocalist. Yes, that’s right. The boys teamed up with Jyoti Gill who featured on the track ‘Galwakri’. Through the use of her distinct vocals, they have managed to address meaningful themes like patriotism in the form of this duet. The biggest disappoint of all when listening to the album and what surprised

me most was the track ‘Full Speed’. With Demonic rapping his way through the song, it left me slightly confused as to how this track didn’t really fit in with the whole image of the album. With 13 singles being centred on folk renditions, it felt like this track had no real place on the album. It didn’t adhere to folk inspired lyricism, instead it encourages listeners to ignore red lights whilst speeding around in expensive cars. But like I have said, it is a peculiar track and I can only hope that the guys have placed it on the album by mistake. Thankfully the banging beat manages to save this track from being a total disaster. Despite the album not having any solid dance floor favourites, the album is packed with great tracks and impeccable vocals. It does however, have a plethora of styles with each track containing a concrete Bhangra beat that is part of the Highflyers signature style.

Time for the final verdict. Three years after their debut release, it looks like Highflyers have upped their game by delivering a more versatile album that remains grounded as a folk rendition. For that reason, I would give this album 3/5 rating. The Born Desi album is available to download online.

FILM REVIEW... r e h t O The n a m o W

By Aalia Khan

@AaliaAsNews

The initial reaction when finding out your husband or boyfriend is having an affair, or has a mistress is of anger, hatred and a pang off jealousy towards the other woman. However this film sees this scenario take a different approach when three ladies befriend one another upon finding out they all have the same partner and he is cheating on all three of them. This girly comedy starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, shows the unique forming of friendship between the ladies to seek revenge against handsome Mark King (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.) New York Lawyer Carly Whitten (Cameron Diaz) is a cool, laid back successful girl who is not one to fall into meaningful relationships, but when she meets Mark she believes everything is different this time, that is until she discovers he has a wife; Kate (Leslie Mann). Kate who is a little on the ditzy side, does not react as a normal wife would when her husband’s mistress turns up to their door looking for him. Instead she follows Carly back to her office and home in the hope of gaining more answers, and the unlikely friendship begins. At first Carly is hesitant on allowing this woman into her life and wants nothing to do with her or her husband but upon seeing this woman’s desperation she gives her a chance. Their adventure sees them following Mark to a beach where they discover he has yet another girlfriend Amber (Kate Upton). They meet her discretely, without Mark’s knowledge, and reveal the truth about him to her. The three women bond instantly on their common betrayal and devise a plan to seek revenge from the cheat. The comedy then begins when they spike Mark’s smoothies with estrogen, giving him a womanly chest and contaminate his shampoo with their hair removal cream. Their pranks lead them to discovering that he has been embezzling

from various companies at his workplace and using Kate’s name to do so. Along the way Carly becomes romantically involved with Kate’s brother Phil and Kate comes to the realisation of her shattering marriage. Together the girls help and support one another, embarking on a trip to the Bahamas, and discovering Mark’s fourth girlfriend. They eventually expose Mark for his cheating and fraudulent ways and make him bankrupt. As a happy ending is essential, Kate becomes a CEO with Mark's former business partners and the company, making a profit under her leadership, Carly and Phil get married and Amber gets married to Carly’s young at heart father. The acting of all the ladies was brilliant, especially Cameron Diaz who is always on top form with her comedy. Leslie Mann played the ditzy housewife well and Kate Upton looked very much like the young blonde bimbo. The chemistry and friendship that formed between the ladies was refreshing to see and their exposure of Mark showed great women power. Nicki Minaj’s small role as Cameron Diaz’s assistant Lydia was also very funny, and for her first feature film, she did rather well. The Other Woman was a cute romantic comedy which every girl would thoroughly enjoy and even men would see the humour in a cheat being exposed and secretly tormented. I think it is a must watch and I would give it *****/***** as it was an unexpectedly brilliant Hollywood film, which I have not seen in a long time.

AKSHAY - KHILADI TO BABY We take a look back at Khiladi Kumar's journey as he prepares for the relase of what is set to be his landmark film - Baby

ASIAN SUNDAY I ISSUE 75

By Aalia Khan

@AaliaAsNews

Bollywood’s action hero Akshay Kumar has certainly made a name for himself in the industry; whether it’s down to his blockbusters such as Houseful 2 and Rowdy Rathore, and his earlier fame makers with the Khiladi series, or his not so popular films such as Tashan and Chandi Chowk to China, Akshay will always be a household name and an actor to be remembered for a very long time. After a string of failures and successes, Akshay is concentrating on doing a variety of projects. Of late Akshay has invested his money in strong subjects like OMG - Oh My God, The Shaukeens and his latest and said to be his landmark venture Baby. Baby sees Akshay Kumar reunited with director Neeraj Pandey, who teamed up on the critically acclaimed film Special 26. Akshay plays a Special Forces officer who would do whatever is necessary to keep his country safe. We’ve caught up with the superstar many times on his movies and his controversies. In this special feature we take a look back at the journey of Bollywood’s favourite Khiladi. Akshay’s career began in the 1990’s when he starred primarily in action films; Waqt Hamara Hai, Mohra, Elaan, Suhaag and Sapoot to name a few. As well as action he soon made his mark with his romance, drama and comedy films, starring in Namastey London, Hera Pheri, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Garam Masala and Dadhkhan. Over the years Akshay has become well known not just for his acting but also for being a stunt actor and a black belt in Taekwondo, which earned

www.asiansstylemagazine.com

him the title of the Indian Jackie Chan. As a result in 2008 he hosted Indian’s version of fear factor – Khatron Ki Khiladi, last year he launched TV realty show Dare to Dance and he also owns the team Khalsa Warriors in the World Kabbadi League. Born and raised in Amritsar, Punjab Akshay’s journey took him from being a dancer to a chef, waiter, model and then finally delving into acting. Having missed his flight for an ad-shoot in Bangalore, he visited a film studio along with his portfolio. Fortunately that evening, Akshay was signed for a lead role by producer Pramod Chakravarthy for the movie Deedar. All of his films released during 1993, including Dil Ki Baazi, Kayda Kanoon, Waqt Hamara Hai and Sainik did not perform well commercially. However Akshay was determined to do well and he got the opportunity to star in Yash Chopra-produced romance, Yeh Dillagi opposite Kajol. His role in the film earned him his first nomination for Best Actor at the Filmfare Awards and Star Screen award. During the same year, Akshay also had success with films like Suhaag and the low budget action film Elaan. All these achievements, promoted Akshay as one of the most successful actors of the year and in 1994 he was able to appear in eleven feature films. In the years ahead Akshay proved himself as an actor and fared quite a few successes with Hera Pheri, Dadhkan, Khiladi 420, Ek Rishtaa, Ajnabee, Khakee, Mujhse Shaadi Karoji, Aitraaz, Waqt,

Garam Masala, Phir Hera Pheri, Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bulaiya, Welcome, Singh Is Kinng, Houseful, Patiala house, Desi Boyz, Houseful 2, Rowdy Rathore, OMG, Khiladi 786, Special Chabbis and Holiday: A soldier is never off duty.

As well Akshay’s successful films, his film failures kept him grounded. Some of his movie downfalls included; Tashan, 8x10 Tasveer, Blue, Kambakht Ishq, De Dana Dan, Khatta Meetha, Action replayy, Tees Maar Khan, Once upon a time in Mumbai Doobara and Boss. Akshay has won many awards and prizes over the years but his love and admiration for his family has been his greatest achievement and has always remained strong and visible to the public. Having been engaged to actress Twinkle Khanna twice he finally married her on 17 January 2001. Akshay and Twinkle have had a successful marriage and their first child was baby boy Aarav, they then welcomed daughterNitara into the world on 25 September 2012. Akshay is known to be a protective father who tries to keep his children away from the media.As many actors do, Akshay has also had his fair share of controversy. A few which sparked major outrage were when Akshay asked Twinkle to unbutton his jeans while performing at a show for Levis at Lakme Fashion Week; this led to a police case being filed against them. Another was when Akshay was reported for slapping a security guard in Mumbai when he reportedly pinched Aarav's buttocks.

Akshay’s movie successes’, good looks, physique, marriage and bubbly personality have made him one of the most popular actors today and it’s no wonder he was named "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine India in 2008. His upcoming release Baby is supposed to be his most promising and biggest film of his career. Baby, deals with the serious issue of counter terrorism, “In today's time, terrorism is a big issue. Every nation is facing this problem and we should all take this seriously and try to fight with it. The story of Baby is about that. There is a group of 27-28 people and their only mission is to finish terrorism from everywhere. And this group is still immature so the code name of their mission is Baby” says Akshay. The actor adds that the subject is very close to his heart. "Every film I do that is special for me. My father was in the army. So I know many things about the services and I find myself quite close to the army men. I feel very proud whenever I do an army based film.” Akshay says he always wants to be known as an actor and not a superstar, "I don't want to be typecast in any particular genre. I think no one can ask me this question that why I only do the same kind of films because I have never done that in my career. I would like to be known as an actor and not a superstar. I don't like the tag of superstar."

Lamb, Quince, and Okra Tagine Quince is an autumn fruit. If you can’t wait until fall to make this stew, you might substitute tart green apples, though they’re not traditional. Add chopped onions, jalapeño, and cumin, and simmer 45 minutes more. 2. Meanwhile, cut each quince into 6 pieces, leaving skin on, and cut away core. Poach in 4 cups simmering, salted water in a skillet over medium heat until just tender, about 10 minutes. Pour off all but 2–3 tbsp. poaching liquid; add butter, sugar, and cinnamon. Cook quinces flesh side-down until glazed brown, about 20 minutes. Turn, and glaze 5 minutes more. 3. Add okra to lamb, cover, and cook until okra is tender and sauce is thick, 15–20 minutes. Garnish with quinces.

Moroccon Mint Tea Ingredients: 1 tablespoon gunpowder green tea 2 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste; add more if you like very sweet) large handful of mint 5 cups boiling water

Directions: Add the loose tea directly to your Moroccan teapot. In a separate kettle, boil a pot of water. Add one cup of boiling water to the Moroccan teapot. Let the tea steep for 30 seconds. Pour the tea into a glass and set aside. Add another cup of boiling water to the Moroccan teapot. Swish around the teapot in a circular motion for 5 seconds. Pour the tea into a glass and discard. Add the mint, sugar, and first glass of tea back into Moroccan teapot, then fill with boiling wate . Place the Moroccan teapot on the stove over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Let simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and pour one glass of tea. Pour this glass back into the teapot to mix. Repeat two more times. Pour the tea from high above each glass to create a froth. Garnish with a couple mint leaves (optional) and serve.

A cup of English breakfast tea with a little milk and sugar is a daily staple for us Brits. Tea is important. But this tea, this tea is on a whole different level. Forget cocktails, forget coffee, Moroccan mint tea the new jam. It’s minty, refreshing, cleansing, and oh so sweet. Simply put, it just makes you happy. A couple quick things to note about Moroccan mint tea. First, the tools. The Moroccan teapot, or berrad, is not only beautiful, but the perfect shape for delivering the long pour you’ll need for your tea. Moroccan tea glasses are generally small, handleless, and often colorful. Next, the process. Crafting the perfect cup of Moroccan tea is a special process. You cannot rush. You cannot cut corners. And no, a microwave is not involved. Start by adding the loose tea into your Moroccan tea pot. If you don’t have a Moroccan tea pot, a different type of teapot will do. Just make sure it can be used on the stovetop. Meanwhile, separately boil about 5 cups of plain water Once the water comes to a boil, pour one cup of water

into your Moroccan teapot. Let the tea steep for about 30 seconds and then empty the tea into a teacup. Set this aside for later. The first cup is very important, as it contains the essence of the tea flavou . Next, add another cup of boiling water into your Moroccan teapot. This time, swish the water around inside of the teapot in a circular motion, then pour into another tea cup. This process cleanses the tea, and helps remove any strong bitter flavou . This tea will not be used and can be discarded. Dump it down the drain. Now it’s time to start building our tea. Add the sugar and the mint to your Moroccan teapot. Also add the first cup of tea that you set aside. This will strengthen the tea and add flavou . Lastly, you’ll want to fill your Moroccan teapot with water. Now it’s time to place your Moroccan teapot on the stove over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Let it simmer for about five minutes. This process helps the sugar to caramelize and gives the tea its distinct flavou Once your tea has done its thing, remove from the heat and pour a glass of tea. But wait, you’re not quite ready to drink! Pour the cup back into the pot. This is done to help mix everything together. It also helps to cool the tea a bit before drinking. Repeat this step two or three times. Finally, you’re ready to serve the tea! However, the way you pour the tea is VERY important. Start by pouring the tea normally into the glass, but as you continue to pour, raise the teapot higher and higher above the glass, until you have a very high pour. This helps the tea become nice and frothy – another distinctive trait of Moroccan mint tea.

Women in Focus - Halima Khan Female sports coach returns to Bradford from Bermuda

Top Right: Halima Khan

ASIAN SUNDAY I ISSUE 75

By Ninder Kaur

@NinderAsNews

A Bradford- born female sporting coach has returned back on home ground following her life-changing trip to Bermuda. Halima Khan, a 30 year old cricket coach was on holiday in Dubai when she was given the opportunity of a lifetime to help coach young girls. “I got talking to members of the International Cricket Council (ICC). It was the West Indies and Bermuda CEOs in particular that told me how they wanted to develop women and girl’s cricket.” As an advocate of increasing female participation in sports she agreed to help out. “I thought they were joking and I didn’t know if they were being serious.” After meeting with members of the ICC back in April last year they helped fund Halima’s week long trip to Bermuda in December. Halima, who is now a National Project Leader had the opportunity to coach girls, aged 8-16 from Bermuda’s national teams. She also had the chance to shed her knowledge and passion for the sport by helping out at after school clubs. Halima describes her trip as a real eye opener as she got to see the way cricket was instructed in a different country. “With the coaching, it was interesting to see the development in Bermuda and how it compared to England. The community is a lot closer out there. With cricket being their national sport there is a lot more discipline and seriousness involved.” With only a week long contribution, she received some positive feedback from not only the girls she were coaching but their parents as well. They were impressed with how having a female coach gave them the drive and motivation to pursue the sport further.

Halima’s Biggest Accomplishment: “To see the amount of girls that now have come through the system and that are taking part in sport. Also, educating them and telling them they are careers in sports to help them pursue their aspirations.”

The ICC officials are also looking to see if Halima can return. “They want me to come out there for a longer period, to not only develop the cricket side of things but the school’s resources. They also want more female role models and coaches to encourage participation. ” Last year, Halima won the award for the Most Inspirational Employee at Bradford’s Inspirational Women’s Awards, and by winning the award it affirmed to her that she had made the right career choice in life. “It just shows how women can take part in sports and carve out careers in sports. Sport is not just about participation, it’s a lifestyle. If you have the drive and perseverance then you can achieve it the same way I have.” “If someone told me I was going to Bermuda, I would have laughed in their face but it happened.” From this experience, Halima hopes to continue her work and do more to raise awareness on women’s participation in sport and not just here in the UK either. “I want to go to countries where women are just coming through the system. It’s about going to these less known cricketing countries and helping develop them from a grassroots point of view.” With only a month into the New Year, Halima has big plans for the future ahead. She wants to help girls to transition from taking part in sports to becoming volunteers and coaches. “ The biggest challenge will be educating our societies and cultures to being more open and accepting of having women in sports and taking on these leadership roles. In 4 or 5 years time I want to see hundreds of Halima Khan’s out there aspiring to become coaches in sports.”

Halima’s Advice: “Don’t give up on yourself. It may be simpler to throw the towel in but if you push yourself it will happen. There may be challenges along to way but always have that self belief.”

With the increasing tension around terrorism and the association of Muslims and Islam with terrorism, Director and Producer Omar Regan has brought about a Muslim comedy fi lm to bring light to what Islam is about and the beliefs of true Muslims, in a light-hearted, comedic manner. American Sharia tells the story, through action-comedy, of a Muslim detective who has his own prejudices against Islam, following constant exposure to Islamophobia. We follow him on his transformational journey, which results in ending rising Islamophobic tensions between the police and the community he serves. Omar Regan, also an actor and writer of the fi lm, commented: “American Sharia is a Hollywood motion picture that sets out to use comedy to reverse the prejudices held against Islam and help promote the religion in a more positive way. “It’s an alternative form of entertainment, during a time where we are surrounded and exposited to increasing negativity and profanity.” American Sharia stars some of the world’s leading Muslim entertainers, including the movie’s main star and host of the tour, Omar Regan – a renowned Hollywood actor and household name for stand-up comedy, Baba Ali - an Iranian born Americancomedian who co-founded Ummah ilms; a Muslim ilm company and True Story ASA well known YouTube duo Adam Saleh and Sheikh Akbar, to name a few. Regan said “We’re not bashing any other faiths or any other religion; we didn’t learn that from the prophet, we’re not making anyone look bad or banging

on any culture or race. The message of the film is that we all need love and unity because we all are the creation of Allah.” Regan’s journey took him from music, to acting to stand up comedy and now into the direction of Islam and creating halal comedy. He says that along the way he has learnt that Muslims themselves do not know Islam “Most Muslims know culture, they known their 5 pillars and then culture. That forced me to study Islam and I learnt that every Muslim that speaks from anger is not following the prophet as the prophet never spoke from anger.” The more he learnt about Islam and the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad the more he wanted to do something with a purpose. Regan was fortunate enough to carry out the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca and perform his Hajj in 2007 and 2008, he says after these journeys he was “Blessed with the strength to be able to turn down certain roles that will cause me to lose my integrity."

He went on “I would say that it was definitely prayer that saved me and allowed me to continue my passion but at the same time have a mission and a purpose, as opposed to just making movies I wanted to make movies to benefit people.” According to Regan Muslims contribute to the negative perspective of them “Muslims will bash other Muslims and I think no wonder the world calls Muslims terrorists because Muslims terrorise each other” he says. The message of this film is that we all need love and unity because we all are the creation of Allah. Regan wanted to talk about islamophobia and educate people on Islam. He says “I am trying to express what I’ve learnt from the prophet. The Quran tells us to talk to each other and communicate instead of getting angry and cursing one another.” He also wishes for the film to “Spark people to read and study Islam. I want people to understand, learn and be puzzled thinking they don’t know

what to feel right now. I want them to feel a sense of calmness and find it really interesting. Penny Appeal, an international humanitarian charity, will be exclusively hosting the UK screenings of the highly anticipated comedy. The familyfriendly film will only be shown in a special 22-city UK tour, starting in February 2014, and won’t be available to view anywhere else, including cinema or online. The tour is an exclusive part of Penny Appeal’s charity extravaganza month, Smile Relief, which aims to raise money for orphans around the world. Penny Appeal CEO, Aamer Naeem said “The growth of Penny Appeal in the last five years has been nothing short of amazing, masha’Allah. We have worked hard to build our charity and are delighted that we have been able to help so many poor and needy people in such a short

space of time.” Naeem explains that “Smile Relief is a special month where we’ll be encouraging people to download our fundraising pack and raise money for orphans. We’ll also be broadcasting a special telethon live on British Muslim TV during February. “It’s certainly going to be a month filled with smile and fundraising, and the film tour will be a great addition. The tour starts with a special launch on Wednesday 11th February in London, and our specially chosen theatre style settings will give audiences an enjoyable and full cinematic experience.” Naeem believes that the film idea is “Simple but strong” and it will allow Muslims to tell their own story to the world in an accessible, and funny, way. He says “It showcases what it means to be a Western Muslim in this day and age.”

PAKISTAN CALLING

By Aalia Khan

@AaliaAsNews

The links between Pakistan and the UK stretch as far back as when people migrated to England in search of work, jobs and opportunities. Today around 1.26 million people call the UK their home, however their heritage and roots will always take them back to Pakistan and for many it is integral for this link to remain strong. Pakistan has always received a vast amount of media scrutiny due to the terror issue currently rising there. It is now portrayed as an unsafe, dangerous, risky country to visit and many non-Pakistani’s, as well as some Pakistani’s would not dream of travelling there. As a result many of the social issues taking place in Pakistan are sidelined giving the word ‘terror’ all the attention. Pakistan Calling is a project aimed at increasing awareness and support for Pakistani civil society organisations and activists’ working to tackle the country’s many pressing social problems. They hope to promote cross-cultural dialogue and community trust in the UK by profiling the many different faces of Pakistan and supporting filmmakers working in areas such as arts, social welfare and citizen

journalism Bradford College hosted the Royal Society of Arts and Commerce Pakistan Calling Event on 15th January 2015 in which some of the films made by the organisation in Pakistan and in the UK were screened along with words from the organisers and councillors. BBC’s Jon Snow was interviewed in one of these films, when the project launched, and he said the media attention on Pakistan is “Not all negative” but there “Isn’t enough coverage” on the social issues occurring there. He believed that the UK needs to “Heavily invest in aiding Pakistan.” All of the films are short films with a strong message; some were filmed by a Karachi university student in Karachi showing the stereotypes of people in Pakistan, the student displayed how many people in the country are living a simple life by educating, earning and trying to do well for themselves. Another one of the films introduced a man named Todd Shea who travelled to Pakistan, from America, as an aid worker and fell in love with the country so he decided to live and work there. Shea continues to work as an aid worker when disasters and destructions occur as well as working on other issues within the country. Shea’s story expressed how the negativity Pakistani people may have towards American people cannot be stereotyped to them all. Anwar Akhtar,

Director of the Samosa organsation and co lead RSA Pakistan Calling, said at the event “America for better or for worse is the most powerful country in the world. I don’t accept that America is the devil or is evil, as it is sometimes perceived. America has helped Pakistan a lot with their load shedding issue.” Also present at the event was Councillor Ralph Berry, Children and Young People's Services and Councillor Alyas Karmani who is also an Imam and Chair of Just West Yorkshire. Both councillors believed that Pakistan and its youth have a lot to offer to the world and they simply need the opportunities to show their skills and knowledge. Cllr Karmani commented “There’s so much to Pakistan which is so enriching, inspiring and Pakistan has so much to offer the world. The young people have so much capability that we just need to unlock the potential to empower and enable them.” Cllr Berry was also on the same page “There is a rich, diverse, liberal, progressive tradition in Pakistan and other places that we don’t always hear about.” As well as in Pakistan, some of the Pakistan Calling films were created in the UK to show the life of British Pakistanis. As such, one film which was made at Luton College raised the issue of identity. In the film some of students happily adopted their Pakistani heritage “I have more family in Pakistan and enjoy going there”, “When it comes to cricket I always support Pakistan”, “We do things collectively as one community”. And others were less interested in their Pakistani identity “I wouldn’t move back to Pakistan”, “It is much better here.” A non Pakistani, white student made the statement “Apart from the colour of our skin we are all the same.” These strong statements indicated how many people have different opinions of their Pakistani background; Akhtar believes that “Identity is personal.” Cllr Karmani acknowledged the importance of art “We need art because it gives us a different perspective, all we usually see is doom and gloom but when you see something different it inspires you to be motivated and allows you to

35

change your views. It is important to change our perceptions as there is more to Pakistan than what we just hear on the media.” The aims of these projects are to raise awareness on key issues and both the councillors believe this is vital. Cllr Berry said “We need to talk about the issues and understand the complexities in all societies”, Cllr Karmani also said “The key thing is awareness raising, sustainable projects that have long term impact. We also need to invest in and empower the youth.”

The film platform is a resource that can be used by community organisations, academics, students, women's groups, teachers and youth workers. It provides a platform for filmmakers in Pakistan and the UK, and articulates the many relationships between Britain and Pakistan. The project aims to build stronger links between Pakistani social projects, the British Pakistani diaspora and a wider group of social entrepreneurs in the UK. UKIP MEP Amjad Bashir defects to Conservative Party Amid claims from his fromer Party UKIP that he has been suspended over financial and employment concerns

In a shocking twist UKIp's only Asian MEP Amjad Bashir, fondly known as Peter Bashir defected to the Conservative Party on 24 January. It is believed the MEP for Yorkshire and the Humber, who was also UKIP's communities spokesman, had been expected to confirm his defection to the Conservative Party on the evening of 24 January shortly beforehand, his suspension from the party was announced. Amjad Bashir in a statement said UKIP had become a "party of ruthless self-interest", was "pretty amateur" and had a "ridiculous" lack of policies. It is being reported that Mr Bashir met David Cameron last Friday 23 January to discuss the move, which the prime minister claims to be 'absolutely delighted' that he was rejoining the Tories. However before the announcement of Mr Bashir joining the Tories, UKIP suspended him over financial and employment concerns. Party leader Nigel Farage said

there were "extremely serious" questions which Mr Bashir had not answered. Mr Bashir rejected the claims as "absurd and made-up allegations". In a statement on its website, UKIP also said one of the reasons Mr Bashir had been suspended was his "continued affiliation" with Mujeeb Bhutto, who was involved in a Pakistani kidnapping gang. Mr Bashir had previously been a Conservative Party member, and became involved with UKIP three years ago. But he said the party was "delusional" about its chances of winning seats in May's general election. Mr Bashir has in the past defended the party against accusations of racism and insisted race and religion had nothing to do with his decision to leave UKIP. It seems Mr Bashir faced issues withthe Respect Party too as fresh claims come to light that Mr Bashir was also de-selected as a Respect member. The UKIP European parliament

member who has joined the Conservatives was a Respect council candidate in Bradford before he was de-selected over reputational issues. Amjad 'Peter' Bashir was selected as the Respect candidate in Bradford Moor for the May 2012 council elections. However, after local residents raised serious concerns about his fitness to stand, he was de-selected by the party and then left Respect. Following this he joined UKIP, became an and MEP, was then suspended, before yesterday casting his lot with the Conservatives. "Clearly Bashir does not have any real political principles or commitment." said Respect MP

George Galloway, "only naked opportunism and self-interest. He represents the revolving door principle in politics. The Tories are welcome to him because he will cause them embarrassment. Fortunately Respect was able to act before he did it to us." Galloway was unwilling to specify what the issues over Bashir's sacking were. "But they were sufficiently grave to make us realise that he was not a fit and proper person to represent Respect. Clearly both UKIP and the Tories have lower standards," the MP said.

Estate Agency set for rapid expansion Hunters has reported rapid expansion over the last 12 months with 37 new branch openings. New businesses are in counties at a distance from the north-based head office and include Berkshire, Suffolk, Herefordshire, Wiltshire and Lincolnshire. Hunters, which opened in York 22 years ago and has reinvented itself as a franchise operation which still has its own branches, now has nearly 130 branches nationwide. The firm says it is set to expand by at least another 50 offices this year. Kevin Hollinrake, managing director and Hunters founder – who is standing as a Tory candidate in a safe seat in May’s general election – said: “Network growth is at an alltime high, with no other agency growing at the speed we are. “These office openings are designed to complement our existing network. “However, it is not just about being the biggest estate

agency; it is about being the best. “I believe that much of our success lies in our infrastructure – our independently owned franchised branches are run by business owners who are

Bradford secures local Digital Catapult Centre YORKSHIRE has been chosen to launch one of three local Digital Catapult Centres, to rapidly advance the UK’s best digital ideas and help accelerate the UK’s digital growth. It is a well known fact that many people per annum are declared bankrupt. This is either due to their own financial situation turning sour whether innocently or negligently or even due to fraud. The UK government have revised the threshold upon which an individual can be declared bankrupt. This is the first increase in some thirty odd years, whereby now a person needs to have a debt of £5, 000 plus. This is a significant increase from the current limit of £750. There are many individuals, charities and other organisations that welcome the changes. This is because now a person cannot be made bankrupt for a relatively small sum of money. My view is that I disagree with the fact that the legislation is positive. This is because it will now be much harder to push rogue tradesman, and people generally who are negligent at paying back their debt. This is because they will not have the bankruptcy threat to make them pay unless the debt is over £5, 000. Whilst the above change is good news for some people, and bad news for creditors, a further change has also been made; whereby the government has given a boost to a bankruptcy alternative in the form of a debt relief order. This is a less drastic order than bankruptcy, which put simply means a person is insolvent, and probably cannot get any form of credit for a period of one year as a minimum. With reference to a debit relief order at present this is only an option for someone with assets of less than £300, and a debt of less than £15, 000. The monetary restrictions meant that it was a minority of people that could actually get a debt insolvency order. The government has lifted the limits; therefore at present someone with £20, 000 of debt and assets of £1, 000 can apply for a debt insolvency order. The maximum surplus income limit to apply for an order, shall remain at £50.00 a month. Although the new limits is very good news for people that owe monies because now they have a higher limit before they can be made bankrupt, as well as a higher limit to be eligible for a debt insolvency order, I firmly believe it is a get out clause for many rogue traders. The government should have ensured that the new limits apply to personal debt, and not debt related to business activities. Overall, aside from rogue traders for honest, innocent individuals that have just let debt get the better of them, atleast now the limits have been increased, they can put right their debt situation without considering the fact that they will be made bankrupt by the credit. The creditor now needs to consider other options, which are probably more realistic for a personal/private individual.

THOUSANDS GATHER FOR RELIGIOUS MARCH

Bradford Grand Mosque Marks an Important Event in the Islamic Calendar.

More than 7,000 Bradford citizens battle strong winds and snowy conditions to celebrate one of the most important events in the Islamic Year. The parade, which was hosted by Al-Jamia Suffa-Tul-Islam (Bradford Grand Mosque) on Horton Park Avenue, proved to mark a special milestone this year as thousands turned out to celebrate the blessed day. Many of the local community and members of Islamic organisations nationally and internationally came together in the city of Bradford to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Mohammad also known as ‘Eid – Milad – unNabi. The procession was presided by the founder of the host organisation, the internationally renowned Muslim Scholar, Shaykh Mohammad Habibur-Rehman Mahboobi but also welcomed dozens of senior scholars from around the world. Speaking after the procession, event chief organiser Mohammed Riaz said: “I would Iike to thank everyone who took part in this beautiful event on behalf of Al-Jamia Suffa-Tul-Islam including all the volunteers, stewards and the general public. Like every year it would not have

been possible without you. Together we promoted the true message of Islam that is a message of love and harmony.” During the parade, participants recited poems of praise, waved colourful flags and displayed banners with messages of love and peace for all humanity as the procession set off from Europe’s largest mosque and peacefully passed through the streets of Bradford returning to the Grand Mosque. Mohammed Riaz went on to say: “By peacefully walking through the streets of Bradford we showed that we are proud to be British Muslims who love their religion and country. I would like to also thank Bradford Council for their guidance and assistance with traffic management of the procession route”. Food and gifts were handed out by volunteers both young and old to people throughout the event that concluded successfully in the later part of the day without any disturbance. Organisers emphasised that the message of the procession was to spread a message Organisers emphasised that the message of the procession was to spread a message of peace and compassion. Student Faiz Ilyas, 19, took part in the parade, talking about his experience, Faiz said: “It was a fantastic

experience for me personally. It gave me a chance to celebrate an important event in my religion and it also went to show how Bradford as a city supports different faiths within their local community. Without their continued support, we would not be able to exercise or take part in such events.” George Galloway who was also at the event said ""It was a huge honour to be asked to take part in this march and to be in the front rank. Usually I am leading protest

marches so it was pretty different for me to be involved in a celebratory one, but completely enjoyable. The must have been at least a couple of thousand on it with hundreds more lining the route which just goes to show the strength and influence of religion among Muslims in Bradford. The weather could have been better of course. The march moved along at quite a lick so if I'm asked to participate next year I'll have to keep in training."

ICC WORLD CUP 2015 PREVIEW By Ayyaz Malik

@AyyazAsNews

The Cricket World Cup 2015 is almost upon us. Fourteen teams from across the globe will be competing for crickets top prize. With cricket’s biggest event under a month away, the team here at Asian Sunday we thought that we would get you into the cricket world cup spirit. We take a look at England’s preparation for the tournament as well as the Asian nations as well. Sri Lanka kick the tournament off against in form co hosts New Zealand on 14th February. This years tournament, just like previous tournaments will see two groups of seven which will also include qualifiers of the round robin event to qualify for the tournament. Afghanistan, Ireland, UAE and Scotland were the teams to qualify through the round robin event. Pool A consists of: England, Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Afghanistan , Scotland. Pool B consists of: South Africa, India, Pakistan, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland , UAE . Pool A Review: Group A sees England in a very difficult group. The three Lions will be joined by Australia the team with the most world cup trophies (four) , in form New Zealand, Bangladesh, T2O winners Sri Lanka, Scotland and the very dangerous to underestimate Afghanistan. With the first four teams from each group going through to the super eight phase, on paper you would expect England, Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka to all progress to the next round. The gulf of class between the more experienced teams shall we say and the so called smaller sides is still big – but surprises do happen such as Ireland beating Pakistan in the 2007 tournament. It will have to take a surprise of extreme proportions for one of the qualifiers to qualify, which we don’t see happening . England who have been marred by controversy off the field such as Kevin Pieterson’s criticism of the England set up, in the media and in his auto biography, hasn’t helped their preparation. On the pitch however England’s form has been poor which lead to Alistair Cook been replaced as captain by Eoin Morgan.

The Dubliner who replaced Cook due to the test captains poor form in one day internationals, hasn’t faired much better himself with the bat – but the 28 year old does have a good scoring average as captain and did hit a 100 in a losing cause in the match against Australia last week . A brilliant nine wicket win against India, should given Morgan confidence in his ability as a one day leader for England. The Three Lions have taken a good squad with them with a mixture of ‘big hitters’ and ‘sensible batters’. Some may argue the exclusion of Ben Stokes is a mistake – but the Durham man’s bowling looks to have counted against him. The ‘smaller nations ‘ if you can call them that I am afraid haven’t closed the gap yet – but countries such as Afghanistan, UAE and Ireland for example can only beat the best if they compete against the best. The Afghan’s in particular have impressed in World Cups, Asghar Stanikzai is a player that caught our eye in the last tournament, Mohammed Shazhad is another who has impressed for the Afghans. The Achilles heel for the Afghans has been their fielding – and the Asian side will have to improve on that if they are to compete in matches in this World Cup. Sri Lanka the T20 winners have struggled in the build up to the World Cup. The current series against New Zealand has been a difficult one – but the Sri Lankan’s have a lot of talent at their disposal - and not to forget the legendary Mahela Jayawardena and his partner in crime Kumar Sangakarra. I don’t think they need to worry to much, ideally though the Asian side would love to carry a winning momentum into the tournament.

Bangladesh the other Asian side in the group, unfortunately I think will not get past the first round. Off the field issues in The Tigers build up to the tournament hasn’t been ideal build up. Teams we predict To Qualify From Group A: Australia (Winners) New Zealand (Runners Up) Sri Lanka England Pool B Review: Defending champions India, start their defence against arch rivals Pakistan on 15th February in a mouth watering game. The defending champions since their title 2011 win have gone onto to dominate recent tournaments. An ICC Champions Trophy and a runners up spot in the T20 World final emphasise the dominance the South Asians have had in recent years. India’s preparation for the tournament hasn’t been the best however. The defending world champions have lost their last two games, which is never ideal. With superstars such as Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and not to forget to mention Suresh Raina it can be argued that the Indian’s have an embarrassment of riches. Their opening game against Pakistan won’t be easy due to the way these matches have always been well contested – but the Indian’s haven’t lost to their fierce rivals in World Cup games. Pakistan who will be facing arch rivals in the first match of their world cup campaign, come into this tournament with not as much cricket as their rivals. Matches against England and Bangladesh, just before the tournament starts could help the 1992 champions get into the right mindset. The Pakistani’s forever known to be unpredictable, were rocked at the start

of the tournament with the news that star spinner Saed Ajmal will miss the tournament as the 34 year looks to correct his illegal bowling action. The inclusion of all rounder Mohammed Hafeez who has also been reported for his action is a plus – but the 34 year old is expected to be just a batsmen for the tournament. With the other teams including South Africa, West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland; UAE and that the first four qualify, you would expect a safe passage through to the super eights for both Asian sides . The Teams We Predict To Qualify From Group B India ( Group Winners) South Africa (Runners Up) Pakistan West Indies Our Verdict : The 2015 tournament promises to be a good one. Australia, South Africa, India and Pakistan will no doubt feel they could go all the way and win the tournament. Australia the most successful side in the history of the tournament might have their work cut out in this tournament as they look to add to their four world cup wins. India will feel they have something to say about, the defending world champions who have won the title twice and will be seen as favourites for this tournament by many , ourselves included. The beauty of sport and in particular sports tournaments – they’re never won on paper – but rather on the sports field. New Zealand who will look to bring their good form to the world cup will be a potential dark horse. A team with Brendan McCullum in it, definitely has a chance of being successful, the Black Caps have never got past the semifinal – but maybe this team can? England and Sri Lanka will be seen as outsiders by many – but both have good enough good squads to cause some surprises in the latter stages. Sri Lanka will be looking to give the legendary pair of Kumar Sangakarra and Mahela Jayawardena a fitting send off, who most definitely will be playing in their last world cups. The World cup starts on the 14th of February and finishes on the 29th of March.

MURPHY DEFEATS WORLD NO.1 IN MASTERS

By Ayyaz Malik

@AyyazAsNews

One Of the three prestigious snooker events, on the snooker calendar came to a close on Sunday 18 January. The Snooker Masters, The Masters a week long tournament started with Sean Murphy beating the reigning World champion Mark Selby – and ended with Murphy defeating world number one Neil Robertson by a massive 10 frames to 2. The Masters tournament itself did produce a lot of high quality matches, with each game having a century in it bar one. There were also a few surprise results, such as Northern Ireland’s Mark Allen beating Scotland’s John Higgins who has won this tournament in the past. Wins for Sean Murphy and Marco Fu against Mark Selby and Stuart Bingham respectively deserve a mention. In fact Marco Fu in his match against Bingham made a 147, which for once was the only one of the tournament. Great news for snooker fans and Ali Carter fans in particular. The Essex star who returned to the sport after a cancer scare, returned to action to a standing ovation in the first round. Carter in his first round match was quite simply brilliant and took apart an out of sorts Barry Hawkins 6-1. Ali Carter’s tournament would end though in the next round with a 6-1 defeat of his own to world number one Neil Robertson, there

is no shame in that. Practice partner and pre tournament favourite Ronnie O’Sullivan started his campaign with a solid 6-4 win over Ricky Walden. The Rocket however in the quarter final defeated Marco Fu momentum it seemed and was seen as the man to beat by many. with 6-1O’Sullivan demolition.fans, Thetheir Rocket wasquest gaining Sadlya for hero’s for yet another masters title was over as the 39 year old lost quite convincingly to world number 1 Neil Robertson in the semi finals, it finished 6-1 to the Australian. The Australian was into yet another Masters final after having a monopoly on this tournament in recent years. If commentators and analysts thought this tournament was a forgone conclusion and another Robertson title win, they were to be proven wrong. Sean Murphy a former world champion and Uk champion winner became the man who was looking to stop Neila Robertson in this one and stop him he did.

45

Sean Murphy was solid throughout the week with out catching the headlines like Ronnie O’Sullivan or Neil Robertson were. The Rotherham in the final itself however won at a canter, winning the match 10 frames to two. Ironic to think Sean Murphy was planning to quit the sport when he quite clearly has more to give to it. Sean Murphy below became the 10th player to complete the “triple crown” when he beat Australia's Neil Robertson to win the snooker masters.

IT IS SURREALY BANTASTIC!

Bradford boss Phil Parkinson masterminded yet another Premier League scalp, this time it was Premier League leaders Chelsea who lost 4-2 to at Stamford Bridge in one of the greatest shocks of FA Cup history.

Proud moment for Parkin and his biys

By Ayyaz Malik

@AyyazAsNews

Bradford City produced one of the all time shocks of the FA Cup as they dumped out Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after being 2-0 down. Chelsea who were looking for glory domestically and in Europe, rested several of their normal first team squad- but on paper you still would have backed the Blues to win this one. The West Londoners had Petr Cech in goal and also gave only a second start Andreas Christensson who was playing at right back, Diego Costa who I talked up before the game, was left out all together. Chelsea did though however have Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard on the bench, maybe the Blues had one eye on this weeks second leg semi final against Liverpool.

As for the visitors Bradford they were at full strength, well they fielded the best team they had available. Billy Clarke who has been a key player for The Bantams this year, returned to the squad after a six game lay off- but the 27 year old started on the bench for this one. At the start of this game there was 49 places separating the two sides – but it was Bradford who arguably had the better of the opening exchanges against their Premier League counterparts. Bradford centre back Andrew Davies forced Chelsea keeper Petr Cech into a fine save. Bradford who many were expecting to offer their main threat from set pieces, conceded from a set piece themselves. Chelsea midfielder Oscar delivered the corner which centre back Gary Cahill converted to give the Premier League side the lead. The League One side at this point might have been fearing the worst against their Premier

League hosts. It deed indeed get worse for Bradford, Mohammed Salah, a player who benefited from Jose Mouriniho’s decision to rotate his squad. The former Basel player who is expected to leave Chelsea, provided the ball for Ramires to convert to make the score 2-0 and put the game out of Bradford’s reach – or so we thought. Bantams striker John Stead scored a couple minutes after Chelsea’s second goal with a powerful strike from the edge of the box which left Chelsea keeper Petr Cech with no chance. A great time for Bradford to score, the League One visitors were only one goal behind at the break. Buoyed by grabbing a late first half goal, it was Bradford who started the second half the better. The visitors despite being two leagues lower than their hosts, were not overawed – and were asking questions of the league leaders.

Sensing that the League One side were getting more confident, Blues boss Mourinho looked to some of his big guns in an attempt to regain control of the match. Mohammed Salah was replaced by Brazilian Willian as Jose Mourinho was looking to kill this game off as a contest. An injury to Jon Obi Mikel forced the Chelsea boss to bring on Cesc Fabregas as well. With the introduction of the former Barcelona midfielder, many would have seen such a substitution as a plus, due to Fabregas’ brilliant passing ability and calming influence – which was definitely needed. Ironically Bradford grabbed an equaliser, and were daring to dream of an FA Cup replay. Former Chelsea player Filipe Morais who left Chelsea as a teenager, grabbed the equaliser with a right footed shot in to to the bottom right hand corner. The former Porto manager Mourinho probably couldn’t believe what was unfolding out on the pitch in front of him. Bradford were starting to defend deeper were ushered forward by their manager Phil Parkinson. Eden Hazard came on for The Blues as they tried to avoid an FA Cup replay, which is the last thing you want to see as Bradford player. With pace to burn and with plenty of ‘trickery’ Chelsea were hoping Hazard could be the man to save them from FA Cup embarrassment.

Getty Images

Bradford who hadn’t made any substitutions at this point would have been understandably tired. The West Yorkshire side battled hard and were well worthy of the replay for their sheer endeavour alone. The Bantams made their first substitution 10 minutes from the end, the change inadvertently paid dividends as Bradford went in front! Jon Stead who scored the first goal, this time turned provider for Andy Halliday who smashed an unstoppable effort into to the top right corner to send the 6,000 Bradford fans behind Petr Cech’s goal into raptures! The League One side, who would have been content with an FA Cup replay before the start of the game, were on the brink of a famous FA

Cup – and another ‘giant killing’ . Chelsea from not wanting a replay, were now desperately searching for the equaliser which would have saw this game go to a replay at Valley Parade. As Chelsea were pushing forward, they left themselves open to the counter attack – and that’s what duly happened. Mark Yeates who came on as a sub, placed his effort into the bottom right corner to kill of this FA Cup tie once and for all with a fourth. This defeat was only the second at home for Jose Mourinho, an impressive feat for Bradford City. It’s onwards and upwards from here on in for the mighty Bantams! Who will no doubt fear no one in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
