MPs to debate making it illegal to force women to wear high heels at work A bid to make it illegal for companies to require women to wear high heels at work will be debated by MPs in Parliament later. More than 150,000 people signed an e-petition calling on ministers to outlaw such workplace dress code rules so women can wear flat, formal shoes. The petition, which labels current formal work dress codes as ‘outdated and sexist’, will be discussed in Westminster Hall. London receptionist Nicola Thorp launched the petition after she was sent home from work when she refused to wear high heels. Some 152,000 people backed Ms Thorp’s call and the campaign prompted the Petitions Committee and Women and Equalities Committee to conduct a joint review of workplace dress codes. The report found examples of female employees being told to dye their hair blonde, wear revealing outfits and to constantly reapply make-up. The Government has already responded

to the petition. In a statement it said: ‘Company dress codes must be

reasonable and must make equivalent requirements for men and women.

‘This is the law and employers must abide by it.’

Want the new £1 coin before everyone else? Here’s how The Royal Mint has announced that the new £1 coins are being sold ahead of the currency's release into general circulation. Coin collectors can get their hands-on collectors' editions of the new £1 coin.

It was created by David Pearce, who was just 15 when it was chosen to feature on the coin, after he beat more than 6,000 other entries submitted by the public to a competition in 2014.

The new 12-sided coin is set to enter circulation later this month.

Dr Kevin Clancy, director of The Royal Mint Museum, who helped choose the design, said: "The winning idea combined traditional elements but also symbolised a modern United Kingdom in an elegant and a succinct way.

But, if you can't wait that long, you can get your hands on one made from precious metals. The Royal Mint has announced they are being sold ahead of the currency's release into general circulation, the Royal Mint has announced. Gold, silver and platinum proof coins, plus uncirculated "mint condition" versions in non-precious metals go on sale on Monday ahead of the tender's full roll-out on March 28. Prices range from £10 for the

uncirculated coin to £1,995 for the gold proof two-coin set. The coin's design pictures the Welsh

leek, the Scottish thistle, the Northern Irish shamrock and the English rose emerging from a royal coronet.

As well as being the same shape as the old threepenny bit, the new £1 is hoped to combat counterfeiting. Collectors can buy the coins by visiting the royalmint.com website.

iHeart Radio follow Oscars trend with awards gaffe The iHeartRadio Music Awards appear to have pulled their very own version of the Oscars debacle, after mistakenly giving an award to Zayn Malik.

Speaking on the video, Zayn said: ‘I’m currently in Paris, sorry I can’t be there. A little birdie told me that I’ve actually won an award, so thank you very much.’

The 24-year-old was mistakenly awarded with Best Video for his breakthrough solo single Pillowtalk last weekend, with Zayn even posting an acceptance speech on Twitter with girlfriend and co-star Gigi Hadid.

In a cruel twist, however, he wasn’t actually the winner. With the awards being determined by fan votes, iHeartRadio seemingly recounted and realised Fifth Harmony’s Work From Home with Ty Dolla $ign came out tops instead.

Facebook accused of failing to remove child abuse images because it believes ‘the images didn’t breach its community standards’ Facebook has been accused of failing to remove child abuse images from the site. The BBC said it used Facebook’s ‘report button’ to flag up 100 indecent photos of children, but 82 were not removed. Instead, journalists were sent an automated response saying the images didn’t breach its ‘community standards’. Among the items not allowed under Facebook’s community standards is ‘sexually suggestive content’. The photos included under-16s in sexualised poses, pages aimed at paedophiles, and an image appearing to have been taken

from a child abuse video. When examples of the permitted images were sent to Facebook, the company instead reported the journalists to police for sharing the pictures, the broadcaster reported. The BBC also said Facebook failed to remove the profiles of five convicted paedophiles. Since the accusation Facebook has responded with a statement from Facebook’s UK Policy Director, Simon Milner, which said: “‘We have carefully reviewed the content referred to us and have now removed all items that were illegal or against

our standards. This content is no longer on our platform. ‘We take this matter extremely seriously and we continue to improve our reporting and takedown measures. Facebook has been recognised as one of the best platforms on the internet for child safety. ‘It is against the law for anyone to distribute images of child exploitation. When the BBC sent us such images we followed our industry’s standard practice and reported them to CEOP. We also reported the child exploitation images that had been shared on our own platform. This matter is now in the hands of the authorities.’

Remind you of the Oscars? Following the mistake however, iHeartRadio have seemingly attempted to bandage Zayn’s wounds by inventing new category Best Solo Breakout, and announcing Zayn as the winner so his speech isn’t left hanging in the online ether. Whoever, the winner awards gaffes are definitely on the up.

Indian airlinesmakes first journey around the world with allwomen crew An Indian airline says it has made the first passenger journey around the world operated by an all-women crew. by STAFF REPORTER

staff to cabin crew -- were from our female staff," spokesman G P Rao told AFP. Rao said even the air traffic controllers at the Delhi end of the flight, which returned on March 3, were women.

The Air India flight departed from New Delhi to San Francisco last week on a Monday and returned to the Indian capital by the same week on Friday.

Check-in and ground handling staff, the engineers who certified the aircraft and the air traffic controllers who authorised the departure and arrival of the plane were also all women, the company said.

The Boeing 777 flew over the Pacific Ocean on its trip to the US, while its return flight was over the Atlantic, encircling the globe, the company said.

Air India says it will operate other flights with all-women teams as part of International Women's day, celebrated on 8 March of every year.

The airline, which has faced criticism in the past for grounding dozens of female cabin crew over their weight, said it had applied to Guinness World Records to validate the claim.

In January, the company started selling female-only seat sections after reports some women were being groped by other passengers.

Cost of TV licence to rise for first time in seven years

The free concession for those aged over 75 remains while the cost of an annual black and white licence will rise

The free concession for those aged over 75 remains while the cost of an annual black and white licence will rise from £49 to £49.50.

The TV licence fee will increase for the first time since 2010, the Government has announced. The annual fee for BBC programming will increase to £147 from £145.50 on April 1 this year, the Government has said. The announcement comes as the broadcaster's director general said TV licence collectors had "fallen short", following reports they were deliberately targeting vulnerable people who have not paid. Enforcement officers at Capita are ordered to catch 28 evaders every week and promised incentive bonuses of up to £15,000 a year, according to a Daily Mail investigation.

The announcement comes amid a period of change for the corporation.

The company is reportedly paid £58 million a year to collect licence fees for the broadcaster and its staff were said to have targetedvulnerable people, including a war veteran with dementia and a young mother in a women's refuge. In a letter to Capita's chief executive Andy Parker, the BBC's Tony Hall expressed his "serious concern" about the reports and called for "urgent clarification and reassurance" that vulnerable people were not being "targeted".

Under the new charter, the corporation's Trust is being replaced by the BBC Board. Last year, BBC Trust chairman Rona Fairhead announced she was stepping aside after two years in the role. Sir David Clementi cleared the latest hurdle in his appointment as the new BBC chairman after he won the backing of MPs. Anyone watching or recording TV programmes as they are shown on TV, or watching or downloading BBC programmes, must have a licence.

The charge applies whether they are using a TV set, computer, or any other equipment. Rules surrounding iPlayer, the BBC's online catch-up service, changed in September. It was announced by the Government last year that the licence fee would rise in line with inflation for five years from April 1 this year. The BBC is due to shoulder the £700 million-a-year cost of handing out free licences to the elderly from 2020 after reaching a funding deal with the Government. The corporation has also been ordered to disclose pay packets of stars earning more that £150,000 a year, including the likes of chat show host Graham Norton and football presenter Gary Lineker.

Our Top Ten Most Influential Asian Women in Britain

To mark upcoming International Women’s Day on March 8, each year we name our Top 10 most influential Asian Women in the UK. Last year’s list was compiled by our sister newspaper Asian Sunday.

This year’s list is just as exciting as there are some new faces with some of our influential ladies still managing to retain their influence. It’s been a difficult task, but across all sectors of business, politics, achievement and contribution to society, we have picked our note-worthy influencers. The list is in no particular order, but we think all the women mentioned are influential, inspiring and deserving of recognition and here they are:

Passport

Nadiya Jamir Hussain (née Begum,), 32 is a British baker, columnist, author and television presenter. She rose to fame after winning the sixth series of BBC's The Great British Bake Off in 2015. Hussain was born to a British Bangladeshi family in Luton, where she grew up. She developed her interest in cooking while at school and largely self-educated herself in cooking by reading recipe books and watching instructional videos on YouTube. She married and moved to Leeds, where she began studying for an Open University degree. In 2015 she appeared in The Great British Bake Off and won the contest. She was subsequently invited to produce a cake for the 90th birthday celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II and to present her own BBC documentary, The Chronicles of Nadiya. Hussain is a columnist for The Times Magazine and Essentials magazine, has signed publishing deals with Penguin Random House,Hodder Children's Books, and Harlequin. She is also a regular reporter for The One Show and a guest panellist on Loose Women with a show of her own in the pipeline with the BBC. Hussain was named by Debrett's as one of the 500 most influential people in the UK in 2016. Hussain was on BBC News' 100 Women list in 2016.

Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, 45, a former Conservative MP and former Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs until resigning in 2014. She is now seated in the House of Lords. The lawyer formerly co-chaired the Conservative Party. She was brought up in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, in a working-class family. She was the first female Muslim to attend Cabinet and at her first ever Downing Street meeting, wore a traditional South Asian shalwar kameez. She resigned from Government saying she was no longer able to support the ‘morally indefensible’ policy on the escalation of violence in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Baroness Warsi is well known for her outspoken views despite resigning from Government even today. One of her many recent views was when she chose to quit the leave campaign over hateful, xenophobic tactics.

Malala Yousafzai is still the youngest person to ever win a Nobel Peace Prize aged just 17 in 2014. The Pakistani-born schoolgirl was shot in the head when she was 15 by Taliban, but survived against the odds. She was targeted while on a bus, for defending her rights to education and had earlier written a blog for the BBC titled ‘Diary of a Pakistani Schoolgirl’. She accepted her Nobel Peace Prize after the committee acknowledged her “heroic struggle” for girls’ rights to an education. Her memoir ‘I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World,’ is a best seller. Malala has continued to speak out despite increased Taliban threats. The Malala Fund invests in early stage girls’ education in poor countries. She addressed the United Nations on her sixteenth birthday and remains an inspiration to millions around the globe. She now lives in the UK.

Bobbie Cheema-Grubb, 50, is a judge of the Queen’s Bench Division of the High Court of Justice and has made history as the first Asian woman to serve as a high court judge in the UK. She has presided over high profile cases. As a Sikh teenager in a Punjabi family growing up in Leeds, she wanted to be an astronaut while attending her local state school. She is described in Chambers Bar UK as a “well-respected” barrister who “relishes complex and demanding cases”. Grubb’s role has highlighted the lack of diversity and she is a role model for Asian women and minority ethnic candidates to join judiciary. Grubb says: “I loved arguing and trying to persuade someone else that they were wrong. I liked the fact that in law there are rules which have to be worked within but which give real opportunity for flair.”

Fatima Manji is a British television journalist and newsreader, working for Channel 4 News. She was raised in Peterborough and studied Politics at the London School of Economics. Manji became Britain's first hijab-wearing TV newsreader in March 2016. Previously, Manji was a reporter, presenter and video journalist for the BBC in the East of England. In 2015, Manji was a finalist for the Royal Television Society’s Young Journalist of the Year award. Manji was also finalist in Broadcast category of "Words by Women Awards", UK awards for female journalists. What really made Manji stand out was when she was attacked by Kelvin

cover story MacKenzie wrote a column for The Sun in which he questioned whether it was appropriate for Manji to present the news wearing a hijab following the 2016 Nice attack. Manji responded to MacKenzie in a comment piece for the Liverpool Echo[9] in which she referred to The Sun's coverage of the Hillsborough disaster, and the contentious and inaccurate front page put together by MacKenzie.

Honours 2015 for services to women in business. Lilani continues to hold the position of influence in our second year, as the person behind platforms for the most powerful and inspiring Asian female achievers in Britain today.

She also stands up for the gender pay gap saying: “It’s a step in the right direction to helping women, especially mums, achieve their ambitions”.

Manji was applauded for standing up to MacKenzie and has since become an influential reporter for Channel 4. Manji is famously known for her interview in The Guardian where she was quoted as saying " I made a really informed career decision at the age of eight. I wanted to be where history is made, I wanted to be in the centre of things", No one told me I’d be standing in a muddy field talking about floods, in waders. Maybe if they had, I’d have rethought". Gurinder Chadha, OBE, 57 is an English film director of Punjabi Sikh Kenyan Asian origin. Most of her films explore the lives of Indians living in England. This common theme among her work showcases the trials of Indian women living in England and how they must reconcile their converging traditional and modern cultures. Although many of her films seem like simple quirky comedies about Indian women, they actually address many social and emotional issues, especially ones faced by immigrants caught between two worlds.

Nusrat Pinky Lilani, CBE, is founder and CEO of Women of the Future and the Asian Women of Achievement

Much of her work also consists of adaptations from book to film, but with a different flare. She is best known for the hit films Bhaji on the Beach (1993), Bend It Like Beckham (2002), Bride and Prejudice (2004), Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008), and the comedy film It's a Wonderful Afterlife (2010). Her latest feature is the partition drama Viceroy's House which has released in cinemas with much interest. Gurinder has perhaps influenced many debates on the actual history of partition, particularly as both India and Pakistan will be celebrating 70 years of Independence this year.

Awards. Lilani is a food guru, author, motivational speaker and internationally acclaimed champion for women. She organises a number of awards recognising influential women and leaders and also founded the Inspirational Women’s Network. Lilani sits on the advisory boards of Global Diversity Practice and Sapphire Partners. She is a patron of Frank Water, a charity that partners grassroots organisations in India to provide safe water. She is a British Red Cross Tiffany Circle Ambassador, a powerful group of women leaders and philanthropists. In 2006 Lilani was presented with a lifetime achievement award at the CBI First Women Awards. In 2012, she was named as Woman Entrepreneur of the Year at the Indus Entrepreneurs UK Gala Awards. Lilani was listed on the BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour Power List of 100 most powerful women in the UK in 2013. She was awarded an OBE in the 2007 New Year Honours for services to charity and a CBE in the Birthday

Patel named five inspirational teenagers in the 2016 Premiership Rugby’s inaugural HITZ awards, which helped increase young people’s resilience, self-reliance and confidence giving skills to get back into education, apprenticeship and employment.

Priti is now Secretary of State for International Development. A sometimes outspoken figure, Patel has been criticised by political opponents for defending the tobacco and alcohol industries; and for suggesting in an economic treatise that British workers are lazy. Her most controversial, yet influential role has perhaps been in as one of the leading faces in the Brexit campaign.

Whilst carving out a successful career in the city at leading global professional services firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Rimla also captained Britain in Futsal competitions. Before becoming a sports development consultant, she had global responsibility for a number of FTSE 100 clients across a number of industries. She is Founder of the leading sport development consultancy, RimJhim Consulting, and, as Chair of the Muslim Women’s Sport Foundation (MSWF), she has led the organisation to one with a distinct reputation nationally and internationally for its extensive work in the field of women’s sport. Rimla is no short of awards and accolades ranging from the Sky Sports and Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Community Award in 2013 and the Asian Woman in Sport Award at the inaugural Asian Football Awards in January 2012 at Wembley Stadium. She now shares her time between writing, speaking, mentoring, practical and strategic consultancy and campaigns. She independently advises and leads projects with governments, advocacy organisations, national and international sports bodies and community groups. Shami Chakrabarti, 47 is a British Labour Party politician and member of the House of Lords. She is also a barrister, and was the director of Liberty, an advocacy group which promotes civil liberties and human rights, from 2003 to 2016. Chakrabarti was born in Harrow, London, and studied Law at the London School of Economics. After graduating, she was called to the Bar and then worked as an in-house legal counsel for the Home Office. When she was the director of Liberty, she campaigned against "excessive" anti-terror legislation. In this role she frequently contributed to BBC Radio 4 and various newspapers, and was described in The Times as "probably the most effective public affairs lobbyist of the past 20 years".

Priti Patel, 45, is a Conservative MP for Witham, Essex since 2010. Her parents are of Gujarati origin. As a minister of state for employment, she tackled education and youth unemployment.

Rimla Akhtar MBE was ranked 15th in The Independent’s Most Influential Women in Sport 2015. In 2014, she became the first Muslim and Asian woman on the FA Council in addition to her role on the Inclusion Advisory Board at the FA and in 2015 was awarded an MBE for her contribution to equality and diversity in sport.

Chakrabarti was one of the panel members of the Leveson Inquiry into press standards throughout 2011 and 2012. In April 2016 she was invited by Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn to chair an inquiry into alleged anti-semitism in the Labour Party, and she presented its findings in June. In August 2016 she was nominated by Corbyn to receive a life peerage in the Prime Minister's Resignation Honours.

Her most recent accomplishment has been to influence a change in competition rules in amateur swimming. MUSLIM swimmers can now wear burkinis in amateur swimming races. The Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) changed its rules to “allow more people to participate in events across England” after a request by the Muslim’s Women’s Sport Foundation (MWSF). We have also included our long list, giving those who nearly made it, a well-deserved mention. Conman jailed for stealing ÂŁ19,850 from woman he met online after promising her marriage by STAFF REPORTER

newsdesk@asian-standard.co.uk

A conman builder who pretended to be a wealthy property developer in order to trick women he met on a dating site has been jailed. Sandeep Singh, 23, of Tipton, West Midlands, claimed to own a six-bedroom house and a fleet of supercars, when in reality he worked as a concern finisher on constructions sites. A court heard how the fraudster tricked a woman into handing over her life savings with his fake name and by covering his Plenty of Fish profile with pictures of luxury vehicles. He also pretended to be four years older than his actual age. Singh and the woman, from Stenson Fields, Derbyshire., began a relationship after they started chatting over the internet. When the pair arranged to meet in person, he arrived to collect her in a Mercedes with a private number plate. Weeks after meeting the pair had also visited potential wedding venues in the hope of getting married. It wasn’t until his lover asked him what to do with cash she'd received from selling a house, the defendant proposed that they pool their resources together to buy another property. However, after transferring £19,850 into his account, the victim became suspicious. An online search revealed his true identity and she discovered the previous year he had been convicted of dangerous driving with excess alcohol. The woman asked for the money back but he said she would have to wait. Police were then called. Singh later admitted fraud by false representation and driving while disqualified between January 1 and February 29 last year following a drink-drive charge in 2015. Singh has now been jailed for 22 months at Derby Crown Court. Sentencing, Recorder Heidi Kubik said: 'You promised to marry her, you were looking at wedding venues and she understandably, in those circumstances, thought it was a genuine relationship. 'All this time you continued to use

a false name with her, looking at wedding venues.

the court: 'The defendant gave a misleading impression about his wealth.

'She asked your advice as to how to invest the money she had received and she was taken in by you completely.

'He said he would be able to provide for both of them and she would no longer have to do her job, and so she handed in her notice.'

'You promised you would look after her financially, that you would both profit from the money she would give you.

Phillip Vollans, defending, said that Singh lied about his wealth because 'he felt he had very little to offer by way of attracting a future partner'.

'She handed in her notice. Now without her job, she lost her financial security. She's lost her faith in people. 'She's ashamed and embarrassed about allowing herself to be taken in by you and is depressed and left with nothing.'

He said: 'The false name is essentially because he didn't want his family and friends to see he was on a dating website.

Conman Sandeep Singh

Justin Wigoder, prosecuting, told

'She asked your advice as to how to invest the money she had received and she was taken in by you completely. 'You promised you would look after her financially, that you would both profit from the money she would give you. 'She handed in her notice. Now without her job, she lost her financial security. She's lost her faith in people. 'She's ashamed and embarrassed about allowing herself to be taken in by you and is depressed and left with nothing.'

Sentencing, Recorder Heidi Kubik

'He did in fact work as part of a team on a property development - as a foreman, as a concrete finisher. 'Essentially, he didn't want to disappoint because he wanted to give the impression he was someone worth dating, he made those embellishments. 'It may be of some comfort to the complainant that while she rightly feels betrayed, this was a relationship in all intents and purposes, that he had genuine feelings for her, that he was looking to start a life and a family with her. 'Mr Singh felt ashamed of going into a marriage where he had considerable debt. 'This money went to satisfy those outstanding figures, it was not used to fund a lavish lifestyle. 'Also, he thought he could put money down on property and pay it back.'

FEATURE International women’s day-a bastion of feminism or a rich man’s commercial toy? by MO BHANA

have to say about such events?

mo@asian-standard.co.uk

Unfortunately, due to negligence and practice of certain elements of South Asian culture, women seem to undeniably get a raw deal from certain elements of the community.

I remember coming across International Women’s day for the first time during an event at the Al Hikmah Centre in Batley and seeing many women converging and congratulating each other on this ‘auspicious’ day. Women with headscarves, niqab’s and some without, whilst some had water melon smiles – it was surreal to a certain extent as I come from a family of very strong, intelligent women, who have seemingly made it in life – everyone from my mother to my sisters who are all seemingly well off, the elder sister in particular, a successful businesswoman with a number of thriving businesses.

However, I noticed a profound distance between the two sets of women, the first of which, Boris Johnson would probably describe as ‘flag waving’ (........ahem), the second of which, whom I had grown up with, do not bother going to so called ‘happy clapping events’ to celebrate all things ‘women’. This begs the question; Am I

wrong to question the motives behind the celebration? On the flip-side however, it must be very satisfying for women to kick misogynist attitudes into touch and take pride in challenging negative stereotypes of women. And most importantly, as a Muslim man, what does Islam

It is a harsh reality for many women who are subjected to such cruelty and malice, they have no option but to in certain cases, take drastic measures and the end result is that the children are the ones that suffer. Moulana Masihullah Kahn sahib says in his book: for friends.... “Women are the ones who leave their homes, their childhood friends, where the used to sleep in their mother and father’s laps, where they were looked after and nurtured kindly.” He goes onto detail how some

Memoona Shaikh of Batley believes that if men like Moulana Mashehullah Saheb were around today, many women would not even bother with such an event. “Name me one man who speaks to his wife with such chivalry and kindness,” said Memoona. “It is very rare for a man to understand what a woman goes through, not just Muslim women, but also non-Muslim women, yes we are united by gender, but if men really took such a great example, maybe feminism would be a redundant philosophy and women would be able to live their life without being under the microscope all the time.” Memoona however, is of the opinion that the event also has its benefits.

“Events like these can dispel myths such as Muslim women are enslaved and that we need saving. The fact is, we are intelligent and at these events, we can reach out to all and sundry and show what we are all about. “If perceptions change, then great but it is the commercialisation that I am against.” Aqeela Makda, 25 of Blackburn is of the opinion that the event is a waste of time and that women should deal with real issues instead of celebrating a “pseudo” form of feminism. “Let’s be honest, us women bitch about everything and anyone, and when it comes to fellow women, everyone nowadays seems to slag each other off on social media, take sneaky pics of each other,” said Aqeela. “I think if we were to celebrate a real women’s day, we should also consider those in Palestine, Libya, Burma, Syria, along with those non-Muslims in the UK that are suffering or are homeless.”

Aqeela says If fellow women want to celebrate international women’s day, they should go for it, no one’s stopping them, however she believes there is a great deal of hypocrisy that has not been addressed. “Yes, there are some very well

Shazia Faqir,36 of Huddersfield laments the number of text messages on her mobile phone and emails wishing her `happy women's day'.

Another one selling women's branded clothes declared, “This women's day, indulge for the `woman of substance' in your life.”

“These were the messages from banks, brands selling women clothes and accessories, health and wellness clinics as well as from beauty parlours among others,” says Shazia.

Shazia believes all these announcements simply do is use the special occasion of women's day to promote the culture of materialism by asking men and women to spend lavishly on luxuries as they deserve.

“Some of these also have the cheek to offer women discounts on this special occasion. For example, a beauty salon launched announced a special offer that consisted of a free manicure, pedicure and hairdos

British police thwarted Paris-style terror plots, claims top officer

Britain's most senior counter-terrorism officer has revealed that terrorist plots on the scale of those carried out in Paris and Brussels have been foiled in the country in the past four years. According to the Guardian, launching an appeal for public help in combating terrorism, assistant commissioner Mark Rowley said the thwarted attacks were among 13 plots that had been prevented since the murder of Lee Rigby in 2013. Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Rowley said, "Some of them have been more sophisticated planning looking to attack public spaces, or police offices or the military,

appealing for members of the public to report any suspicious conversation they might overhear.

not that dissimilar to some of the attacks we have seen in Belgium and France and elsewhere. There is a whole range from the simple to the complicated."

Rowley also said the threat of terrorism from those inspired by ISIS would continue despite the group's military setbacks in Iraq and Syria. "This threat is going to continue in different forms and it going to keep metamorphosing," he said.

As part of the Action Counters Terrorism campaign, a podcast has been produced revealing previously untold stories of how UK terrorist attacks were prevented, featuring accounts from detectives, bomb disposal and surveillance officers. Rowley said the aim of releasing new material was to give an insight into how terrorists might prepare and provide

more confidence for the public to report any suspicions. TV adverts have been launched

"The reason for this appeal is to say to the public: 'Trust your instinct, we are already getting lots of information on a third of our cases, look at our website, listen to these adverts, and if you pick up anything at all suspicious don't be cautious please us."

Sex education to be compulsory in English schools by ITRAT BASHIR

statement of their policy and what will be taught, so that parents can make informed decisions.

itrat@asian-standard.co.uk

The government has tabled amendments to the Children and Social Work Bill, which will make it a requirement that all secondary schools in England teach relationships and sex education (RSE). The amendments also allow the government to make regulations requiring personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) to be taught in all schools in England in future. According to an official spokesperson, relationships education, RSE, and PSHE are designed to ensure pupils are taught the knowledge and life skills they will need to stay safe and develop healthy and supportive relationships, particularly dealing with the challenges of growing up in an online world. The government is proposing the introduction of the new subject of ‘relationships education’ in primary school and renaming the secondary school subject ‘relationships and sex education’, to emphasise the central importance of healthy relationships. The focus in primary school will be on building healthy relationships and staying safe. As children get older, it is important that they start to

develop their understanding of healthy adult relationships in more depth, with sex education delivered in that context. It is expected to see children and young people being taught this new curriculum in schools as soon as September 2019. Schools will have flexibility over how they deliver these subjects, so they can develop an integrated approach that is sensitive to the needs of the local community; and, in the case of faith schools, in accordance with their faith. On the new plan, Education Secretary Justine Greening said: “RSE and PSHE teach children and young people how to stay safe and healthy, and how to negotiate some of the personal and social challenges they will face growing up and as adults. These subjects form part of the

building blocks young people need to thrive in modern Britain. At the moment, too many young people feel they don’t have the RSE they need to stay safe and navigate becoming an adult.” According to the Secretary, it is time to make this change to ensure all children and young people have access to these subjects and to update the current statutory guidance for RSE, which was introduced nearly 20 years ago, in 2000. We need high-quality, age-appropriate content that relates to the modern world, addressing issues like cyber bullying, ‘sexting’ and internet safety. However, the amendments will continue to allow parents a right to withdraw children from sex education, and schools will be required to publish a clear

Barnardo’s Chief Executive Javed Khan, said: “We are thrilled the government has listened to our campaign to provide all school children with ageappropriate school lessons on sex and healthy relationships to help keep them safe. Barnardo’s has long campaigned for this vital education so children can better understand the dangers in the real world and online. We believe this will give children the knowledge and skills they need to help prevent them being groomed and sexually exploited.” Angela Rayner MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Education, was delighted with the government’s announcement that they will seek to introduce statutory, age-appropriate relationship and sex education for every child from Key Stage One. “This is the culmination of years of campaigning by the Labour Party, charities and MPs across the House, and I’m pleased the Minister has listened to the arguments and acted appropriately. Good quality relationship and sex education in schools is a key to the prevention of child abuse and violence in teenage relationships. It provides children with the knowledge, resilience and confidence they need to challenge exploitative relationships.”

How diets high in sugar and saturated fat could be harming your brain

by KATIE BOYD PhD Candidate in Neuroscience, University of Sussex

A lot of research has been conducted to establish the risks that a high energy diet – high in saturated fat and sugar – poses to our health. The most common known results of such diets include obesity, heart disease and diabetes, but research suggests that a diet high in fat and sugar can also have a significant impact on our cognition – the way we learn, remember, and think. Back in 2010, Scott Kanoski, assistant professor of biological sciences at Perdue University in the US, showed that as little as three days of a diet that is high in saturated fat and sugar was enough to change cognition in rats.

HEALTH Further research by Kanoski indicated that the hippocampus, the area of the brain that is important for learning and memory, is especially vulnerable to the effects of a high energy diet.

During the research, rats were fed either a high energy diet or one that was nutritionally balanced, and had to learn where to find the food while inside a maze. After only three days, the rats on the high energy diet were less able to find the food rewards than those that had been given the nutrient-balanced diet. They didn’t gain any weight, which suggests the damaging effects of a

high energy diet are more than the production of excess body fat – it also affected their brains. Further research by Kanoski indicated that the hippocampus, the area of the brain that is important for learning and memory, is especially vulnerable to the effects of a high energy diet. The fact that this brain region

appears to be affected earlier than others is worrying, as it proves that the earliest detrimental effects of a high energy diet are on cognition. This effect on memory could be explained by insulin resistance which happens on an energy rich diet. Insulin is used as a signalling chemical that tells the body to

remove glucose from the blood to use as energy. So, when the body becomes insulin resistant, it can’t do this as effectively, which leads to high blood sugar levels. Insulin resistance has been mostly associated with obesity, as these people typically have had high energy diets over a long time period, and can sometimes progress into type 2 diabetes. In fact, researchers at the University of Mexico found that rats showed evidence of insulin resistance after only seven days on a high energy diet. In this case the hippocampus’ response to insulin changed and it appeared

to alter the structure of nerve cells in that region. It meant that the nerve cells were less able make new connections with other nerve cells, which is required to make new memories, and suggests that a high energy diet can impact the way we learn through this developed insulin resistance. Cognitive decline has also been previously linked to insulin resistance in humans. One study, in 2011, showed that after five days of a high fat, low sugar diet, people performed worse on cognitive tasks such as focusing their attention and such diets have also been linked to the development of Alzheimer’s Disease. However, further research into the very short-term effects of high energy diet in humans is currently lacking. A vicious circle? Terry Davidson, professor of psychology at Perdue University, suggested that changes of this kind to the hippocampus could even affect the way we eat and even lead to obesity. The hippocampus is responsible for learning and perhaps also for us associating the feeling of hunger with pleasure when we eat. But, when there is damage to the hippocampus, this could be disrupted and it might cause you to eat even when you don’t feel hungry. And if you turn to food which is high in fat and sugar in this instance, it could create a vicious circle of further hippocampus damage – and more overeating. Although our knowledge regarding the short-term effects of a high energy diet on our brains is limited, we should still be encouraged to make healthier choices when it comes to food and it’s especially important when the food we eat could impact our minds as well as our bodies. It’s unfortunate that a bad diet can affect the way we think and learn – and long before most of us would be concerned about having a few too many treats. Shop owner, rescues stroke victim, 86, after she fails to turn up for her morning paper

Local shop owner, Ali Aktar has been praised for his heroic customer service skills for a regular customer. Irene, 86, had spent around 11 hours on the floor of the home where she lives alone after suffering a stroke, thankfully Aktar’s customer service skills and has probably saved the pensioners life.

Atkar said: ‘He came back and said no one was answering the door. The second time he went to the back garden and knocked on the kitchen door but there was no answer. The men then phoned the police, who broke down the door and found Irene on the floor. Officers

believed she had been there for around 11 hours. Irene, who lives yards from the shop is still in James Cook University Hospital.

Debbie Tweddell, who lives nearby, told GazetteLive: “If it wasn’t for Ali then who knows what would have happened.

Ali, who has owned the shop for 15 years, has been described as a local hero by residents.

“He has been there a long time and he deserves some credit for what he’s done.”

Local shop owner Ali Atkar became concerned about his vulnerable regular when she failed to show up to buy her morning paper. Aktar, who owns the Lifestyle Express store on Slater Road, Grangetown, told the GazetteLive that Irene usually shows up every single day and when she didn’t it got him immediately worried. Ali, 48, said: ‘I open the shop at 9.30am every day and she’s always outside waiting to get her newspaper. ‘On Thursday, she hadn’t been and I was worried because she’s usually there before me. ‘She’s nearly 87 and lives by herself, and she shouts at me and tells me off for being late.’ The day went on but Irene still didn’t come in. Concerned about his customer, Atkar sent a guy who lives close by to Irene’s house.

Trump’s revised travel ban still faces legal challenges by STEVEN MULROY Law Professor in Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Election Law, University of Memphis

President Trump’s new executive order on immigration addresses some of the legal problems found by courts in the Jan. 27 original order, but is still vulnerable on some of the same legal grounds. As a constitutional law professor who has recently written on this topic, I’d contend that Trump’s lawyers are not out of the woods yet. Some important changes The new executive order still has the original’s 120-day ban on the entry of refugees from all countries. Jettisoned is the indefinite ban on Syrian refugees. The new order keeps the 90-day ban on entry by persons from six majority Muslim countries – Iran, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Libya and Yemen. But the new order removes Iraq from the list. The change came because of Iraq’s role in assisting the U.S. in the fight against the Islamic State and its enhanced security measures, according to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. The revised order also removes the original’s preference for refugees who are members of “minority” religions in their country of origin. Stating this preference had opened the Trump administration up to the argument that the original order aided Christians and other non-Muslims in violation of the separation of church and state. But the change may be too little, too late. The federal court that struck down the first executive order on church-state grounds also relied on statements by Trump and Rudy Giuliani that the purpose of the order was to effectuate a “Muslim ban.” The new executive order doesn’t undo the effect of those statements. You can’t unring that bell.

problem.

By imposing a blanket ban on anyone coming from one of the remaining six majority Muslim countries, this week’s executive order still arguably runs afoul of a 1965 statute that bans discrimination on the basis of “national origin” regarding visas.

Due process clause less of an issue

order clarifies that it does not apply to green card holders or those who hold lawful visas. This detail will help Trump defend against arguments that the order violates the Constitution’s due process clause, which was the basis for the federal appellate court ruling that the order was unconstitutional.

Additionally, the current executive

The due process clause provides that

the government cannot take away someone’s liberty without notice and a hearing before an unbiased decision-maker. It applies even to noncitizens if they are present in the U.S., but not to noncitizens abroad. Exempting noncitizens with green cards or visas means there are far fewer people affected by the executive order who have the right to complain of a due process

But other legal issues apply equally to the original and revised orders. By imposing a blanket ban on anyone coming from one of the remaining six majority Muslim countries, this week’s executive order still arguably runs afoul of a 1965 statute that bans discrimination on the basis of “national origin” regarding visas. To be sure, by exempting current visa holders from the executive order’s reach, the universe of potential legal challengers on this ground shrinks. But to the extent the executive order burdens those seeking new visas, there may still be a viable legal challenge. Ultimately, the only way to know for sure the legal effect of this new executive order is to wait for a court ruling. Given that the American Civil Liberties Union has already pledged to challenge the new executive order in its ongoing litigation against the immigrant ban, we may not have to wait long. Oscars fiasco a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ foul up? You wouldn’t bet on it

Leicester won the premier league, the Daily Mirror published an article that listed 11 other bets that had shorter odds than Leicester winning the premiership. A few examples are given here: • Arsenal to sack Arsene Wenger and install Piers Morgan as boss: 2,500-1 • David Cameron to replace Tim Sherwood as Aston Villa manager: 2,500-1 • Sir Alex Ferguson to win Strictly Come Dancing: 1,000-1 • Andy Murray to name his first born Novak: 500-1

The BBC had a similar article which gave odds of 500-1 that the Queen would have a Christmas number one in the pop charts, Kate and William would have triplets (1,0001), Kim Kardashian would be the US president (2,000-1) and the Loch Ness monster would be found (500-1). The BBC also reported that the odds of Elvis being found alive in 2016, bearing in mind that he died (or at least he was reported to have died) in 1977, was 2,000-1. According to the bookmakers the chances of Elvis being found alive, 39 years after his death, was more likely than Leicester

by GRAHAM KENDALL Professor of Computer Science and Provost/CEO/PVC, University of Nottingham

The 2017 Oscars will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. The finale should have been the award of Best Picture but, when La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner, it was only halfway through their acceptance speech that the mistake was recognised. The speech was abruptly stopped and Moonlight was announced as the actual winner. No doubt, this is a matter for extreme embarrassment for PwC, the accountants who are responsible for counting the Oscar votes for the past 83 years. I suspect that it is especially embarrassing for the two partners that look after the counting of the votes

and, importantly, safeguard the envelopes. This mistake is likely to be put down to human error and I am sure that we all feel sorry for the individuals involved. But what are the chances of a mistake like this happening? Long shots At the start of the 2015-2016 football season, Ladbrokes were offering odds of 5,000-1 that Leicester City would win the Premier League. If you know anything about the betting industry you will recognise that these are very high odds, certainly far higher than anything that the betting industry would envisage happening. To put this into context, when

All this begs the question, what were the chances of the mistake happening at the Oscars on Sunday evening?

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS If you want to make your own judgement, you could look at various odds and decide where the Oscar announcement fits.

The moment, PWC accountant Brian Cullan was distracted at Oscars

I am not a bookmaker but I would be surprised if you could get odds of more than 100-1 against the Oscar mistake – and probably a lot less now. If you want to make your own judgement, you could look at various odds and decide where the Oscar announcement fits. I would argue that there is less chance of finding the Loch Ness monster than the error that occurred on Sunday. Therefore, the odds would be shorter than 500-1. You can continue picking bets until you find something that in your view – which is important, as the betting industry depends on differing views – is equally likely to happen. I would not be surprised if you ended up with something that was even lower then 100-1.

Miss world debacle winning the premier league. Indeed, all of the items listed above were felt more likely to happen than Leicester winning the premiership. Red faces All this begs the question, what were the chances of the mistake happening at the Oscars on Sunday evening? There are a number of ways that we could calculate this. The easiest would be to go to the bookmakers and ask them to give you the odds. You are likely to get quite short odds. I would not expect bookmakers to offer anything like 5,000-1, or even 2,000-1. This is because it could easily happen, as evidenced by the events on Sunday evening and the calling of the wrong Miss Universe winner in 2015. If you look at the examples given

above, most people would consider them virtually impossible. So, why offer long odds with the risk that this exposes the bookmaker to, when the event could actually happen? There is also a risk of manipulation. The recent Pie-Gate incident – in which a football player was forced to resign after being seen eating a pie on the sidelines and for which a bookmaker had offered odds of 8-1 – is currently under investigation. When it comes to the Oscars, there may also be concerns about how the bet would be settled. Does it count if the declaration is in jest (which could be manipulated), does the mistake have to be made by the auditors (PwC) or is it enough for the host to make a mistake, even if the paperwork is in order?

A further way is to try and analyse the likelihood of making such a mistake. The press is reporting that this is the biggest mistake in Oscar history. We could take the view that something like this would inevitably happen, given that PwC have been managing this process for 83 years. It was only a matter of time. Doing an analysis that everybody agrees with would be difficult, as it includes so many unknown factors, but the probability is certainly not close to zero. So, despite the press coverage that resulted, the incredulity that it could happen and the fact that it actually did are a little surprising. It was going to happen at some time, it was just a matter of when.

INTERVIEW

Alia Bhatt:

“Badrinath ki Dulhania is very special to us” Alia is excited about her next, 'Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya', in which she plays a small-town girl. "Vaidehi (her character) is lively and fiery. She wears her heart on her sleeve and is an ambitious girl. At the same time, she is sensitive towards her family. Certain experiences in life have made her bitter, so she isn't thrilled when she receives attention from Badri (Varun Dhawan's character). After having “a lot of fun working on the movie," Alia tells us why we should go watch her third outing with Varun Dhawan.

by FATIMA PATEL fatima@asian-standard.co.uk

FP: Firstly, congrats on winning the Filmfare Best Actress award for Udta Punjab. Do you think winning the best actress awards adds more pressure on you for your films to be successful? Alia: No, I don’t think I will ever go under the radar. I feel, strategically, (not going under the radar) makes sense right now. I had three releases in 2016, and this year, I will hopefully have one more release apart from BKD. Nothing is confirmed yet, but it seems BKD will be my only film in 2017 as of now. It’s a very different and biggish film. What I mean by ‘biggish’ is that it’s a very mainstream film, which I haven’t done for a while now. So, I am really looking forward to that. You’ve matched steps with Madhuri Dixit for Tamma Tamma again, were you apprehensive at all when the song came to you, of firstly being able to do justice, but then also of comparisons? I didn’t try to step at all, I was standing many feet away, it was almost like a tribute, when you are in a club, a party or when that old song plays you get so excited, ‘Oh yea, that’s our song’. It’s literally that, we are not trying to recreate it, we are so happy that this song ever existed. Your character Vaidehi doesn’t think getting married is her only aim in life. How much does Alia Bhatt identify with this?

A part of me really related to Vaidehi’s character because she is very passionate and ambitious and at the same time, she is very sensitive. I feel I am like that as well. Also, I feel that a relationship and two partners have to be equals. I don’t feel that one has to be less than the other. Like the way, maybe not exactly the same, but the tone with which Badri approaches her. He’s very gentle towards her and that gentleness is always loved in a guy. Badrinath ki Dulhaniya is the franchise to Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania, how different would you say the films are from each other? The film is not a sequel, it’s not a continuation. It’s a franchise. It’s a different story; it has another person and dulhania with a common thread that’s a love story. If you were to take away one special thing from the film Badrinath k iDulhaniya what would it be? The humbleness of both the characters Badri and Vaidehi – and the simplicity of love. I think the film just shows you that love always helps us to “get there” in the end despite any chaos or lunacy! Also the power of love, we tend to get a bit cynical in this world.. Badri brought my belief back in love. Is it true you want to do a biopic on Nazia Hassan? Yes, if given a chance I would love to do a biopic on the Pakistani pop sensation Nazia Hassan who died very early in her age. She was a singer and a very good one. I love singing. Also, the story

INTERVIEW The film is not a sequel, it’s not a continuation. It’s a franchise. intrigues me. It’s your third film with Varun, are you expecting a hat trick at the box office? Well, as much as I would love to, not can predict what’s going to happen at the box office – at the end of the day the fate of our film is in the hands of the audience! This is my third film with Varun and he is such a great person and a friend to work with. Even if Varun is doing the simplest of things, he will do it with all his heart. And he has a big heart! That’s the most endearing and sweetest quality in Varun, which is why when you watch him on screen, he just lights up. I really

hope audience like this film fingers crossed We saw your recent interview on Koffee with Karan alongside Varun. The two of you have immense chemistry and are very playful with each other. Its obvious you guys had a blast on set with lots of masti…with that in mind, how did you manage to be focused on the more serious or intense scenes in the film? It’s our job to be focused as actors. I don't marvel at being focused cause that's a given. And also, there's a lot of preparation that goes into the character. So yes, off screen we

fight a lot haha but on screen we are just our characters. And just to add I find the fun lighter scenes harder to do!!!! Any other projects you’re excited about after Badrinath ki Dulhaniya? I start shooting for Ayan's film this year with ranbir and zoyas with Ranveer! It's a big year. Full of creativity!!!! Finally, if you were to describe Badrinath ki Dulhaniya in one sentence what would it be? It's all Heart!!!!! Badrinath ki Dulhania is very special to us. We have invested our hearts and emotions to make this film and we really hope people love it as much as we have loved being a part of it Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya releases in cinemas worldwide from 10 March.

The amendment was passed by 358 votes to 256, a majority of 102, which states that the government must bring forward proposals to ensure that citizens of other EU and EEA countries and their family members who are legally resident in the UK must be allowed to remain in the UK and continue to be treated in the same way in respect of their EUderived rights post-Brexit. Despite the defeat, the government is determined to trigger Article 50 by the end of this month. It is reported that the Ministers will reverse the result when the bill comes back to the Commons.

“Labour believed that EU nationals should not be used as bargaining chips in Brexit negotiations. We will continue to support this simple but effective amendment when it returns to the Commons, and urge MPs on all sides of the House to do so.”

Peers debating on Brexit Bill at House of Lords Showing disappointment over the defeat, a spokesman for the Brexit Department said: "The bill has a straightforward purpose, to enact the referendum result and allow the government to get on with the negotiations."

Keir Starmer MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, on the Government’s Brexit Bill amendment defeat, said: “This is a really welcome and important step forward. For months Labour has been urging the Prime Minister

Jonathan Arnott, UKIP Constitutional Affairs spokesman, said: “The idea that we shouldn’t kick out EU nationals currently in the UK is a good enough one, but I have a huge problem with this amendment: it is remarkably short-sighted. We need a reciprocal agreement between the EU and the UK. Also, he does believe that “the House of Lords should be amending this Bill in particular”.

Budget 2017: No 'spending spree' warns chancellor Chancellor Philip Hammond has warned there will be no 'spending spree in this years budget.

The government has been under pressure to provide more money for the NHS and social care.

Mr Hammond said any surplus cash would be used to ensure the UK had enough "gas in the tank" for the coming years.

Last Saturday tens of thousands of people marched in London to protest against "yet more austerity" in the health service.

He also acknowledged social care budgets were under particular pressure but said this was "not just about money". Labour said the government was putting money aside to prepare for Brexit which should instead be spent on the NHS Speaking to the BBC's Andrew Marr Show after ruling out "huge spending sprees" in a Sunday Times article ahead of his first Budget, Mr Hammond said: Better than expected economic figures did not represent "money in a pot" due to the UK's "huge" borrowing levels.

Mr Hammond said the economy was "performing extremely well" but that spending reductions were putting pressure on services. This was particularly the case with adult social care, he said, but added that some councils were performing "extremely well" while others were struggling. The chancellor did say there was a case for taking a long-term, strategic view on how the costs of an ageing population can be met, but said that in the short term: "This is about good practice as well as budgets."

A reported £60bn Brexit bill was "a piece of negotiating strategy" from Brussels but that the UK "abides by its international obligations" The UK will "fight back" and not "slink off like a wounded animal" if a Brexit deal cannot be reached.

Writing in the Sunday Times, he said that calls for "massive borrowing to fund huge spending sprees" were "reckless, unsustainable and unfair on our young people who would be left to deal with the consequences".

He had "no intention" of publishing his tax return, criticising "demonstration politics"

Public sector net debt - not including public sector banks - was £1.68tn at the end of January 2017, equivalent to

85.3% of GDP according to the Office for National Statistics. It has increased by £91.7bn since January 2016, the ONS said. Mr Hammond last year abandoned the timetable of his predecessor, George Osborne, to eliminate the deficit by 2020, instead pledging to invest in homes and transport. Also on the Marr show was Labour

shadow chancellor John McDonnell, who said the National Living Wage should be increased to give workers a "pay rise". He said this, along with reversing changes to disability benefits and a cash injection for the NHS, could be funded by reversing £70bn in corporation, capital gains and inheritance tax cuts. He also said Labour wanted to abolish university tuition fees and was looking at how this could be afforded.

“India's growth trajectory is truly remarkable, with the highest growth rate among the G20 economies and the Minister’s Union Budget announced earlier this month will only spur this on. With the depth, liquidity, multicurrency and profile of London’s markets, together with the UK remaining the largest G20 investor in India, London Stock Exchange is ideally suited to partner with India in this extraordinary growth story to deliver key Indian priorities like infrastructure development,

UK Secretary of State for International Trade Dr Liam Fox said: “The UK-India investment relationship is hugely important. Bangladeshi restaurant Bilash cooks up £100,000 investment by ITRAT BASHIR

itrat@asian-standard.co.uk

One of the West Midlands’ leading Asian restaurants has undergone the largest refurbishment in its history, as it aims to cement its place as a dining destination of choice. Bilash, started in 1982 by popular chef Sitab Khan, has invested more than £100,000 into creating a new-look for the Wolverhampton restaurant, which is popular with local business leaders, footballers and musicians visiting the city. Stylish, minimalistic interiors, the addition of booths and state-of-the-art kitchen equipment are all part of the makeover and have been followed with the launch of a brand-new menu. Inspired by the traditional cuisine of Bangladesh, diners will now be able to sample signature dishes of Goan Tiger Prawn Masala, Laziz Posliyan and Mughi Diya Donia, as well as some of the trademark meals it has become renowned for. A new wine selection has also been developed in partnership with Majestic Wines, with a special focus paid on sourcing unique varieties that complement the food on offer. Talking about the restaurant, Mohammed Khan, who now runs the business with his father, said: “We made the decision to take curry to the next level about 25 years ago, creating a unique dining experience with the freshest ingredients, the best service and a contemporary take on traditional Bengali cooking.” According to him, the latest refurbishment is the biggest in their history and reinforces their determination to remain one of the premier dining venues in the West

Midlands. They listened to what our customer’s wanted and reflected that in more cosy seating, contemporary design styles and an open plan view into the kitchen, so they can see where the real action takes place. He continued: “A lot of time has also been spent developing a number of new signature dishes, all are prepared using the finest ingredients by

experienced chefs who have a flair for delivering unforgettable food.” Bilash, which was Michelin rated for the sixth consecutive year, now seats 50 diners downstairs and a further 30 upstairs, which can be used for private dining or corporate functions. The latter is a growing market for the family-owned restaurant with local businesses keen to impress customers

and suppliers with a visit, some even travelling from Birmingham, Coventry and Shrewsbury. “We are very proud of Wolverhampton and do everything we can to increase the profile of the city. This includes forging strong partnerships with Dunstall Racecourse and the Grand Theatre, offering special packages for people attending both venues,”

explained Mohammed. “I’m not ruling out further ventures either as we recognise the importance of working together with other businesses to boost the local economy.” In addition to its Michelin rating, Bilash is also featured in the AA, Waitrose and Haden’s Good Food Guides.

Business leaders and charities urge Chancellor of the Exchequer for diesel scrappage fund by ITRAT BASHIR itrat@asian-standard.co.uk

A broad alliance of business organisations and environmental charities has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, urging him to introduce the Mayor of London’s proposals for a national diesel scrappage fund. Last month, London Mayor Sadiq Khan called on ministers to

implement his new plans for a national ‘dirty’ diesel scrappage fund that would financially compensate motorists and enable the government to get a grip on killer toxic air. Diesel cars and vans, many of which were purchased in good faith by drivers who wrongly thought diesel was a ‘cleaner’ option, contribute massively to London’s current toxic air pollution. Currently more than 9,000

Londoners die prematurely each year as a result of long-term exposure to air pollution. Air pollution in the UK is leading to 40,000 premature deaths annually, creating an economic burden of £20 billion every year.

Organisations, including the Federation of Small Business, London First, Greenpeace and the Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association, have expressed their support for the Mayor’s proposals for a national diesel scrappage fund.

In their letter to the Chancellor they said: “We believe the Mayor has adopted a cost-effective approach that minimises risks and simplifies administration for government.

“The Mayor’s proposal seeks to rebalance the financial cost of improving our air away from the individual, unlocking significant emission reductions while reducing the cost for those least able to afford to upgrade their vehicle or change how they drive. This will enable the government

to have greater confidence that it will fulfil its legal obligation to comply with European legal pollution limits as soon as practically possible.”

Welcoming the broad alliance of business organisations and environmental charities, Khan, said: “Our filthy air is a national health emergency and it is vital that the government treat this crisis as seriously as I am doing and introduce measures that will cut air pollution and save lives.”

BUSINESS IN FOCUS

A success story of an entrepreneur left India to fulfil his dreams by ITRAT BASHIR

itrat@asian-standard.co.uk

Mihir Kapadia is the CEO of Sun Global Investments, a leading, integrated, boutique financial services firm specializing in emerging markets. At a very early age he left India with a dream of becoming a successful person. He was born and raised in India, which he left at the age of 18 in 1990 to study in New York and graduated four years later with a MBA in International Finance from St. John’s University. His firm, Sun Global Investments is headquartered in London, with offices in Mumbai and Dubai, with a strong foothold in the international and emerging markets with assets under advice over $500mn.

to spread my entrepreneurial wings and launch Sun Global Investments,” he said. When asked how his firm managed to grow despite the financial crisis and recession, he said that being a small player, they have been one of the most innovative and idea centric houses in this business. “We were able to find a niche for ourselves by doing things differently, by having a different voice, almost being a little different from the consensus in our approach to risk, regulation and life in general.

“From the early days, we were solely focused on emerging markets. Having the emerging markets versatility helped us to develop better

results, as they were doing better, and helped us introduce new ideas. We have also focused strongly on the quality and intensity of service that we provide to our clients, which has allowed us to differentiate ourselves in difficult times.”

It provides a full scope of services to institutional investors, family offices, corporate clients and highnet-worth individuals across wealth and investment advisory, securities trading, corporate finance and real estate advisory. The firm is the creator of the world’s first India fixed income Exchange Traded Fund on the LSE London Stock Exchange and recently they have been very excited as the fund reached its first $10m benchmark. Before moving to the UK, Mihir initially set up his first business in the US, basically trading commodities and making investments. Mihir told Asian Standard that whilst most of his colleagues were not focusing on the developments in emerging markets like India, Africa and Central America, he found that this was an area he was immediately interested in. “Sun Global Investments became the embodiment of this thought in years to come,” he added. At the time, however, Mihir made the decision to move to Romania and take over the family business. By 2000, he had decided to move to London, a city he saw as the world’s financial hub. “Soon after setting up a financial services firm, I had to navigate my new business through the DotCom bubble bursting, which once managed led us to making waves and outpacing competitors. My old interest in emerging markets soon returned and this, coupled with my realisation of the potential of wealth and fund management, lead me to part ways with the company in 2008

Sun Global Investments one of leading companies to list world's first Indian fixed income ETF on London Stock Exchange

Mihir also gave credit to his staff for the success: “We focused on being mean and lean, which could not have been possible without a strong team behind our efforts.”

Mihir Kapadia, CEO of Sun Global Investments

Recalling the challenging experience he faced during his career, Mihir said that the development of my business was intimately linked with the burgeoning financial crisis of 2008. “The year that I launched Sun Global

You have to think big and believe in your idea...... We became known in the industry as an ‘ideas factory’ by having a different voice, and almost being anti-consensus in our approach to risk. You need to remain confident that there is growth ahead.

Investments was the year of the most devastating financial crisis of recent history. I already had a little experience in this field, having navigated my previous company through a previous crash, and so I knew that to survive this one, I would have to keep a calm head. Everyone lost so much faith in developed markets so quickly that I knew that the growth of emerging markets would be the key to unlocking a bright economic future. “With this in mind, we stuck to our guns and chased down every potentially lucrative investment opportunity we could find in any of our key emerging markets and created some good cut-through in an otherwise struggling industry.” Analyzing on the recent global events, Mihir said that people have sold off emerging markets in the last three years, with the most recent reason for this negative sentiment being the push for a stronger dollar due to the Trump victory. “This victory has been negative for emerging markets currencies and assets. The upside to this sentiment is that emerging market assets are now cheaper and likely to outperform in the medium term,” he added. He had a message for young entrepreneurs: “You have to think big and believe in your idea. When the world was going ‘zig’ during the financial crisis we were moving ‘zag’. We were able to find a niche for ourselves by not only doing things differently but thinking differently as well. We became known in the industry as an ‘ideas factory’ by having a different voice, and almost being anti-consensus in our approach to risk. You need to remain confident that there is growth ahead.”

Money Talk

Shabab Gulfraz

Shariah and Ethical Financial Planning I have worked in the financial services industry for more than 12 years, having previously been a lawyer. During the early part of my career, the only product offering Shariah compliance, was a mortgage. I did not complete many Shariah compliant mortgages because there were very few products available and they were charging a significant premium to offer Shariah compliance. Another of my concerns was some of these products did not protect clients to the same level as conventional products. Nevertheless, in the last few years the market has started to change. Perhaps this is because young professional Muslims have more disposable income than their parents did and they wish to invest, but still in line with their faith. Keeping monies in property or in a bank may seem safe, but in isolation property may be a very illiquid and high-risk investment strategy and cash although liquid, is prone to erosion by inflation and lack of growth. In my view, Muslims have suffered loss of growth on investments because the financial services sector failed to recognise the diverse needs of Muslim investors. There are many Muslims that do not use the services of an Independent Financial Adviser. They are not aware of the benefits of financial planning, such as reduction of inheritance tax bills, legacy planning to ensure future generations of your family receive you wealth, tax efficient investing and mitigation of

capital gains tax. The financial services profession has in recent years recognised the lack of products, and at the same time the growth in wealth within the Muslim community. This means that now there are products available that go beyond simply offering a mortgage. There are products that can cater for investing in the short term, the medium term and for the long term in line with Shariah principles.

Although this market is relatively new and there are some products available, I dislike the idea that such products come with a premium attached to them. I must be honest this deters me from personally investing in such products. This is because i feel that such products should cost exactly the same as other similar products on the market. I feel there are alternative products available on the market that could

work for individuals that are ethically inclined. I personally prefer investing in ethical companies because I like the idea that I am investing positively in those companies that have a mandate that is not just profit driven. In terms of the profits generated from ethically investments they are actually on par with conventional investments with a similar cost to conventional investments. I guess for me these investments undertake

more due diligence on the companies assets they invest in; therefore in my view possibly these investments are less volatile and in the long term the returns might be more stable. In my view I feel that there are more choices now for people to invest in line with their feelings, and attitude towards how investments should be managed. It is now no longer the conventional that is the only option open to individuals.

Is It Direct Or Indirect Loss?

The growth of Airbnb and other similar websites has seen a large increase in the number of home owners renting out their properties on short term lettings as an alternative to hotels to raise money from holiday lettings. However, are short term lettings of this nature putting leaseholders in breach of their lease? This was the issue which the Upper Tribunal (Lands Chamber) had to decide in the case of Nemcova v Fairfield Rents Limited.

In that case Miss Nemcova had a 99 year lease of a flat in Enfield. She was frequently absent and granted a series of short term lettings of the flat, usually to business visitors to London. She estimated that it was let for about 90 days in the year. The lease did not require Miss Nemcova to occupy the flat as her only or main residence nor did it prohibit the use of the flat for business, short term letting, occupational licence or holiday lets. However, the lease did contain a covenant that Miss Nemcova was not to use the property “for any illegal or immoral purpose or for any purpose whatsoever other than as a private residence”. Following complaints by the other residents of the block, the landlord took action and claimed that as the short term lettings did not constitute use of the flat as a private residence, Miss Nemcova was acting in breach of her obligations under the lease. The Upper Tribunal found that

the occupation of the flat by each of the short term tenants lacked sufficient permanency for it to be considered occupation of the flat “as a private residence”. Each of the short term occupiers had their own private residence which they had left to occupy the flat temporarily for a specific short term purpose in the same way as they would occupy a hotel room. Their occupation was therefore of a transient nature. For these reasons the Upper Tribunal found that Miss Nemcova was acting in

breach of the covenant in her lease. Although this case is fact sensitive, most leases will contain similar clauses relating to the use of the property. Whether a leaseholder is in breach of their lease if they let their property on this type of short term basis will depend upon the construction of the particular covenant in the lease. Leaseholders considering short term Airbnb style sublets should carefully review their lease to ascertain whether there are any restrictions

on its use and seek legal advice where necessary otherwise they may be acting in breach of the terms of their lease which could lead to legal action being taken against them by their landlord which could ultimately result in the lease being forfeited. The Property Litigation Team at Blacks can assist with lease renewals or any property, landlord or tenant disputes. NUMEROLOGY

by

Swetta Jumaani

Swetta Jumaani is one of India’s leading Numerologists. Her journey into numerology has been interesting. She is often asked, “What’s in a name?” and says that as far as we, the Jumaanies are concerned there is a lot (Read: everything). The number game now has a new meaning, to be Number 1 you have to now get the numbers in your Name right. Swetta tells us that each alphabet of your name has a certain value, and the sum total of this should be in harmony with your date of birth to have a smoother sailing in life. This necessitates one to know more about the study of numbers. Study of numbers is best known as numerology. It is an ancient science, which was practiced by Hindus, Chaldeans, Hebrews, Egyptians etc. In those days this science was handed down from generation to generation and kept as a secret from the general people. Slowly it lost its significance and came to be regarded as a superstition. It was only in the last century that this science came to be documented in a scientific manner and it was only in the last few years that the general interest in numerology has been re-kindled thanks to Swetta’s father Bansilal M Jumaani. It was in the late sixties and early seventies that Swetta’s father started dabbling in numerology as a hobby, soon this hobby turned into a passion, the turning point in his career came when he managed to get a message across to a famous filmstar who had been jailed “I told them if they brought up the case for hearing on a particular day, he would be able to walk free. They heeded my advice and the rest is history. Swetta now writes exclusively for Asian Standard, giving you an insight into the world of numerology each week. The sentimental Moon People born on the 2nd, 11th, 20th and 29th in any month are termed as Number 2 people, ruled by the planet Moon, which is closely linked with Number 7 of Neptune. Cancerians are also governed by Moon or Number 2. In fact the first time Man {Neil Armstrong} set foot on the Moon, it was a date adding to No 2! 20+7+1969= 7, Neptune which is Moons partner. It was during the Cancer period when Moon, and Neptune are in full flow.

Moon, as one can also see is a dreamy, romantic, gentle, imaginative and creative planet.

Moon lends gift of imagination, and creativity; hence, most Number 2 people are very ‘gifted’ and talented. Many songs in bollywood have been inspired, and pictured on the Moon, which also makes a person romantic. Bollywood’s first Super-Star, Rajesh Khanna {29/12} was a No 2; Amitabh Bachchan {11/10} who took over was also a No 2. So was the next Super-Star, Shahrukh Khan {2/11}.

ruled by Moon, such as K L Sehgal, {11/4}, Dilip Kumar, {11th December} Sanjay Dutt {29/07}, Ajay Devgn {02/04}, Naseeruddin Shah {20/07}. Sonakshi Sinha, Anu Malik, Akshaye Khanna, Rahul Dravid, Virendra Shewag, are all amongst some Number 2 people. Cancer Ruler being No 2, Moon, 2 Cancerian cuties, Katrina Kaif {16/07} and Priyanka Chopra {18/07} have also done pretty well.

And it was Apollo- II; II=2 too.

In fact, Worlds biggest Super-Star, Michael Jackson {29/8} was a No 2 too!

They are inventive, and at the same time, lazy and laid back, not very forceful in carrying out their ideas. They depend on others around to ‘push’ them to make the best of their faculties.

COMMENTS: Number 2 people {MOON}:

Some of the other great romantic bollywood actors of all times are

The flip side of the Moon is that it makes a person moody,

and sometimes prone to even depression. With the phases of the Moon, even the vast ocean is affected, as can be seen with the high and low tides.

Abroad, a study revealed that lunatics are most affected during the phases of the Moon making them go berserk. In fact most terror attacks have happened world-over in the month of July {Cancer rulerMoon}. The chief weakness is that they Moon can make one restless, unsettled, and lack continuity in their plans. They are also inclined to be oversensitive, and so easily get downhearted if they are not in happy surroundings.

In health, they have to guard against diabetes, blood pressure and heart problems. Yoga and meditation is strongly recommended.

Their lucky gem is that of the Moon, which is the Pearl, set in silver, on the right hand, little finger. The Pearl helps in calming mental faculties, and can control mood swings. The Aston Martin Valkyrie: AM-RB 001 Hypercar takes its name from the Gods The revolutionary hypercar being co-developed by Aston Martin and Red Bull Advanced Technologies, formerly identified by its codename AM-RB 001, has now been officially named the Aston Martin Valkyrie.

The name continues a fine tradition of Aston Martin ‘V’ cars. This began back in 1951 with Vantage, which was selected as a name to distinguish high performance variants of the then current model, the DB2. Boasting 125bhp versus 105bhp for the standard engine, the Vantage represented a significant increase in performance and desirability. The first time the Vantage badge appeared was on the side of the DB5. It remained a name reserved for the most potent model derivatives until 2005, when the Vantage became a model line in its own right. Twelve years later the acclaimed family of V8 and V12-powered models has made the Vantage the most

Aston Martin Valkyrie successful model in Aston Martin’s history. Virage, Vanquish and the Aston Martin Vulcan - Aston Martin’s very own God of fire - are more recent ‘V’ cars to continue this lineage. Now, seven decades after the Vantage name started it all, the Aston Martin

Valkyrie propels this uniquely distinctive and lyrical family of model names to another level. For Aston Martin’s Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, Valkyrie perfectly captures the drama of what is not only the ultimate Aston Martin, but the ultimate expression

The Tiguan Allspace - the Volkswagen SUV with up to seven seats

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace

of hypercar design, engineering and performance: “Aston Martin model names have deep meaning. They need to inspire and excite. To tell a story and enrich a narrative that stretches back some 104-years. The Aston Martin Valkyrie is an incredibly special car that demands an equally remarkable name; an uncompromising car that leaves nothing in reserve. The connotations of power and honour, of being chosen by the Gods are so evocative, and so pertinent to a car that only a fortunate few will ever experience.” While its name is rooted in ancient mythology, the Aston Martin Valkyrie is a pure expression of modern technology. By bringing together Aston Martin, Red Bull Advanced Technologies, project partner AF Racing and some of the world’s leading technology partners, the Aston Martin Valkyrie promises otherworldly performance befitting of its name.

More space for life in motion. It is the most successful SUV "Made in Germany": the Tiguan. Half a million people opt for this all-round vehicle with front-wheel or all-wheel drive each year. The second generation of the SUV came onto the market in 2016. Now Volkswagen has come up with something even more: the new Tiguan Allspace - an independent variation of the best seller. A spacious family car with a 109 mm longer wheelbase and 215 mm additional exterior length. For more passengers, more luggage and even more versatility. The optional 5+2-seat Tiguan Allspace has its European premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show (9 to 19March). The new Volkswagen SUV fills the space between the familiar "classic" Tiguan and the upper-range SUV Touareg. Therefore, the Tiguan Allspace, boasting up to 760 litres* of luggage capacity, also appeals as a charismatic alternative to all those motorists and families that previously had to rely on a van because of the amountof space required. When the Tiguan Allspace is loaded to roof height up to the seatbacks of the first row, its storage capacity is an impressive 1,920 litres. Tiguan Allspace with balanced proportions. The Tiguan and the new Tiguan Allspace were developed at the same time. Accordingly, the two body versions consistently exhibit a confident stance on wheels sized at least 17 inches. Marco Pavone of the Volkswagen Design Team is responsible for the exterior of the Tiguan."We have designed the rear doors of the Tiguan Allspace to be longer. The bonnet was also raised up at the front above the radiator grille to adapt the proportions to the longer overall length,"says the exterior designer. Pavone goes on to say: "A very unique, formative line accentuates the side window design that rises behind the C-pillar."

Zlatan Ibrahimovic rescues Manchester United and seals fifth League Cup triumph for the reds Zlatan Ibrahimovic was ultimately the Manchester United hero on another dramatic day at Wembley as Jose Mourinho claimed his first trophy as Reds manager with a thrilling 3-2 EFL Cup final victory over Southampton, to clinch a fifth League Cup triumph for Manchester United.

Lingard was replaced by Marcus Rashford seconds later and the substitute's low drive was saved by Forster, before Southampton went up the other end. Had it not been for some last-ditch defending and holdyour-breath moments as the ball skipped across the face of goal, the Saints could have won it.

It was just inevitable that Ibrahimovic would have the final say as the Swede scored two goals, including the winner three minutes from the final whistle.

Instead it was left to Ibrahimovic to send United fans into dreamland as the Reds broke forward on 87 minutes with Herrera eventually supplying an inch-perfect cross for the Swede to head home and seal a fifth League Cup triumph for United amid jubilant scenes once again at Wembley.

The 35-year-old Swede and Mourinho - instrumental in bringing him to Old Trafford after the pair forged a bond at Inter Milan - are now the two central figures leading United forward.

If United are to build on this first trophy of the Mourinho era, Ibrahimovic's continued presence is essential because the EFL Cup final win is only the first building block in an edifice that requires considerable renovation after the dismal post-Sir Alex Ferguson years of David Moyes and Van Gaal.

Mourinho's move to bring the Swede in on a free transfer from Paris St-Germain was seems to have paid off and could provide the sort of personality that had echoes of the great Eric Cantona. But it was far from plain sailing for the Reds as Manolo Gabbiadini scored twice for the Saints, however United found a way to win the match and win the silverware through Ibrahimovic's late header.

Mourinho, however, is safe hands when it comes to winning trophies and United remain in serious contention for two more in the Europa League and FA Cup. This is a good start, but the success-hungry Portuguese will want more.

While Southampton named an unchanged side from their last match two weeks ago, Mourinho made six alterations to the team that won at Saint-Etienne.

Mourinho won the Premier League twice, as well as the FA Cup and two League Cups, in his first spell at Chelsea. He won 124 games out of 185 in that period, a win ratio of 67%.

In came David De Gea, Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo, Ander Herrera, Lingard and Anthony Martial for Sergio Romero, Ashley Young, Daley Blind, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini and the injured Henrikh Mkhitaryan. It was the Reds who had the first sight of goal when Paul Pogba’s well-struck shot was punched away by Fraser Forster, but it was the Saints who enjoyed the best of the opportunities in the opening period and they would have been ahead but for an offside flag on 11 minutes. Gabbiadini had the ball in the net after a cross from Cedric from the right, but the flag was up against Ryan Bertrand who was running in behind Gabbiadini and the effort was chalked off. The Saints continued to look dangerous in attack but an incident at the other end, on 19 minutes, brought the first goal of the game. Oriol Romeu’s foul on Herrera allowed Ibrahimovic to take aim from 25 yards with a sublime freekick over the wall and past the outstretched arm of Forster. The goal did little to deter Saints who continued to attack and United had De Gea to thank after two excellent

He won 80 out of 136 (59%) in his second stint at Stamford Bridge - winning the title again and the League Cup - while he has won 28 of 43 at United at an impressive 65%.

stops from James Ward-Prowse and Dusan Tadic. Chances were less frequent for the Reds but when they came, Mourinho’s men made them count and it was Lingard who utilised some space in the box to double United’s advantage on 38 minutes. After receiving a pass from Rojo, the man who netted in the 2016 FA Cup final and 2017 Community Shield opened up his body and rolled a measured effort into the far corner. That strike seemed to have put the Reds in complete control, but Gabbiadini gave Claude Puel’s men a lifeline in first-half injury-time. The Saints raided down United’s left flank again and Ward-Prowse’s cross was flicked past De Gea by the Italian. Things got even better for Southampton three minutes after the restart when their Italian striker found the net once more. After De

Gea had made another fine stop from Nathan Redmond, the Reds failed to clear a corner and a header back into the box by their captain Steve Davis was pounced on by the Southampton striker who turned on the half-volley and fired home. The momentum was now with the Saints but Forster almost presented United with a chance to retake the lead when his loose ball fell to Martial who put Zlatan through. Fortunately for the goalkeeper, he was able to race from his line and block at the forward's feet.

The statistics add up to exactly what is required at Old Trafford. He will chase the Champions League prize either through the Premier League or the Europa League because this is vital to his future plans. In the meantime, Ibrahimovic once again proved himself indispensable. He was the difference here. He made the decisive contribution to clinch a game United did not deserve to win.

Minutes later Southampton almost went in front as Romeu rose to meet Ward-Prowse’s corner and saw his header come back off the post.

He is head and shoulders - quite literally - above every other player at United. He has scored 26 goals this season, with Juan Mata next with nine. He has had 143 shots compared to Paul Pogba's 117, and 65 shots on target compared to Pogba's 39.

United’s best chance since half-time arrived when a cross into the box dropped to Lingard, but the Reds’ matchwinner last May couldn’t repeat his heroics as his shot flew over the bar.

United are not quite the force they were - but this win proved that if they are going to get anywhere near that status again, Ibrahimovic is the man who is vital to Mourinho's plans, even at 35.

Hamza Akbar beats Stuart Bingham in snooker shootout

Pakistan's Hamza Akbar pulled off a sensational upset as he beat the Stuart Bingham in the Snooker Shoot-Out at the Welsh open which took place at the Watford Colosseum.

The former Asian Snooker Champion, shocked observers and media colleagues after winning the match against the top seed and world number two. Bingham looked in control of their First Round contest as he opened up a 48-1 lead, but only for Akbar to overturn the deficit courtesy of a series of superb pots - proceeding to win the match with 48-53 points. Hamza, after winning the match, expressed his delight on social media. "Delighted to win the game after so long, thanks to Almighty and all friends and family who have supported me in difficult times", he said. Akbar, who has been based in Oldham ever since he turned

professional, missed the China Open, Scottish Open and the German Masters, due to issues with his Visa and slumped to 103 in the World rankings. His Manager Mohammed Nisar said: "Hamza has been able to practice at Agriculture University in Faisalabad - which houses a snooker academy -

but the tables are different to what he has been used to on the tour, we hope he will adjust to it soon as he is very talented." Nisar added: "He needs a couple of wins now to boost his confidence and finances, he's got four busy months coming up so hopefully he will do well in all competitions. We would like to

say thank you to the Counsel General of Pakistan in Manchester, Dr Zahoor Ahmed and OPF President, Barrister Amjad Malik, who have helped us a lot and also to Simon Brownell at world snooker as he worked tirelessly to sort out this situation.

"We are very delighted with the outcome of this game which will help Hamza financially and mentally to perform well in the future and win more game for him and his country", his manager said.

Amir Khan vs Manny Pacquiao: the fight everyone is waiting for The fight between Amir Khan and Manny Pacquiao was guaranteed to take place at some point from the first time the pair sparred together in October 2008 at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card gym, a hard retreat in the seedy streets of West Hollywood.

several long fights, during the last few years; there have been concerns about his commitment to boxing because of his fulltime work as a senator in the Philippines.

The fight will not be short of incident during the build-up with Roach, never the kindly uncle people want to imagine, sure to be critical of his former fighter; he firmly believes he saved Khan’s career.

Khan will fight Pacquiao on May 19 in the United Arab Emirates after voters overwhelmingly picked Pacquiao’s as his next opponent. The fight is set to take place in either Macau or the United Arab Emirates. Khan had mentioned Old Trafford as a possible venue during the last three weeks of endless and often irrelevant rumours, but eight of his last nine fights have been in America. Pacquiao’s last three fights have been in Las Vegas, including his sub-standard loss to Floyd Mayweather in 2015. Khan’s last fight took place in May last year when he gained nearly ten pounds and lost to Saul Canelo

Alvarez at middleweight. “When I sparred with Manny he was dangerous,” said Khan. “They were hard rounds and I knew then that one day I would fight him. I have been ready for a long time and I thought he was going to avoid me like Mayweather.” Pacquiao has not stopped an opponent since 2009 and in

Khan sacked Roach in 2012 and started to train under Virgil Hunter in the San Francisco area; part of the split was because of the increasing amount of time Roach devoted to Pacquiao, which included long training camps in remote regions of the Philippines. Khan had to travel to the camps, often working as a sparring partner when he had world title fights of his own. The winner of the fight will know that they could persuade Floyd Mayweather to get back in the gym and back in the ring for one last fight.
