Anyway, getting back to this edition, by the time you read this, the local elections will have been well and truly over and hopefully we won't need to worry about Zac Goldsmith's favourite Bollywood film or star for that matter. But speaking of stars, I really do admire Gauri Khan, it can't be easy being the wife of a superstar. Our reporter Ayesha met up with the stunning B-town wife at a VIP rendezvous in London recently. Find out what she got up to on pages 26 and 27. Our cover girl this edition is the sexy Nargis Fakhri. Shetty was never confident about her looks in the early 90’s, especially as she stood taller than most of her heroes. It wasn’t until Dharkan released in 2000 that gave Shetty a new lease of life. Her new slim and trim figure and new nose, gave Shetty the confidence to focus on her look and make her the entrepreneurial sexy diva she is today.

Priyanka Chopra is probably one of today’s hottest Bollywood stars. She made her first appearance in the Bollywood film Andaaz, where she shared the female lead with Lara Dutta. Chopra was already riding high from her Miss World win and so going into films was only a natural progression. In the 90’s it is believed actress were at the sole mercy of their makeup teams and didn’t have much choice on their look for the role they would play.
Kajol, has always maintained she doesn’t like makeup in her interviews. Her very first film Bekhudi proved that this woman could not be tamed. She preferred her oh so natural unshaped eyebrows and makeup free face. Nevertheless, as success came her way, Kajol too took to the attraction of presenting her beautiful eyes with a deep protection of eye liner and nude yet complimentary shade of lipstick. She looked stunning in films like Fanaa and the more recent Dilwale.
Whilst Lara still looks the same, from Andaaz to today, Priyanka certainly not only transformed in the sense of complexion, but also had a major style change. We’re loving the new kick ass slim trim and sexy look of Priyanka today.

important as when you are the bride-to-be. Leading up to the big day, try and keep your skin as makeup free a
Daytime weddings have their own charm. While it is sometimes difficult to strike the balance between too-much and not-enough makeup, when you do get it right, the radiance is hard to match. Bipasha Basu looked ethereal in her bridal get-up, but it was the makeup she had for her mehndi event that really bowled me over! Read on for a step-by-step on how to recreate this fresh-as-a-daisy look!
possible. If you do have to use cosmetics, make sure you are wiping off the last speck off before you go to bed. Use a primer all over the face. This will help the foundation sit on your face much more smoothly. For a fresh look, take a medium coverage foundation and build it layer by layer, making sure you are not applying too much product in one go! This will also ensure a smoother, more natural looking complexion.
Moisturise using a light moisturiser. Remember daytime events can get a bit warm, so you don’t want anything that will feel heavy on your skin!
Next, apply a brown eyeshadow into the crease of your lids. Be careful to not put too much product – you only need a contour and not a smoky effect. Apply multiple coats of a black mascara to make your eyes look awake and fresh.
Use an eyeshadow primer in a neutral colour all over the lid. Taking a light pink shimmery eye shadow, sweep the colour all over the lid taking it up towards the socket.
Fill in the brows, using a medium brown gel, and then go over with a powder to set.
For blush, I would recommend using a pink colour all over the check. Add highlights on the cheekbones, just under the brows and down the centre of your nose for an added glow.
Using a black eye liner, line the upper lash line, going as close to the lashes as possible. To keep the look natural, do not extend the liner beyond the lid.
Lining your lips with a lip pencil will ensure that your lipstick stays all day. Once lined, go over the lips with a bubble-gum pink for that perfect pink pout!

Ever since Alia Bhatt made her debut in Karan Johar’s Student of the Year, she has been compared to his other muse, Kareena Kapoor. It will be interesting then to see the two together in ‘Udta Punjab’ which also stars Kareena’s ex, Shahid Kapoor and Punjabi star Diljit Dosanj. The photo that caught our attention, however, is this of Bebo and Alia. The future Bebo, shall we say?

The Pakistani TV couple that has launched a thousand OTP-ships! Osman Khalid Butt and Maya Ali, who were last seen opposite each other in the hit serial, Diyar e Dil, won the Best Onscreen Couple (Jury) Award at the Hum Awards held in Dubai. The couple, fondly referred to as Osmaya, are good friends in real life and will be seen together soon on TV as well as a film!
We love a father-daughter moment and Bollywood seems to do them oh-so-well. The very handsome Imran Khan shared this photo of himself with his tiny tot, Imara Khan, similarly dressed in hoodies and we couldn’t help gushing over how cute the little one looks. We haven’t seen Imran on the screen for a while and difficult as it must be to leave this one to go on set, we are going to selfishly hope that Imran starts a project soon!

This edition we’re focusing on how you could easily adapt familiar dishes to suit a vegan diet: even if you’ve never considered cooking in this manner before, it’s really easy to adapt your cooking with just a few changes. No matter what you or your family and friends choose to include in your diet, we’re confident that you’ll be able to cook up something tasty and nutritious in no time at all with these recipes!
Vegan Malai Kofta
1 cup yellow onion, diced finely fork. While he is well known for his method acting, I believe Randeep has given his entire heart and soul for ‘Sarbjit’. Manoj Bajpayee to turn traffic cop for a day Actor Manoj Bajpayee will be living the life of a traffic cop for a day and he says he wants to “salute the spirit of these unsung heroes”.

Kristen Stewart to direct short film Actress Kristen Stewart is set to direct her first short film about power of women. The “Twilight” actress will step behind the camera for Refinery29, a fashion and lifestyle media company announced on Monday at a presentation, reports hollywoodreporter.com. The film will comprise of 12 short films, which will be created by female filmmakers, writers and animators and the first offering, actress and filmmaker Chloe Sevigny’s “Kitty”, will premiere at Cannes Film Festival later this month. “In my acting career everything I do, my image and who I am and what I feel represents me is in the hands of a man, usually a white man... Jay Kadn talks Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai
by Ayesha Babar Jay Kadn, the breakthrough singer formerly known as Junai Kaden is back with his latest track and if the buzz is anything to go by, it seems that he’s soon going to be ruling the charts once again! Asian Style Magazine spoke to Jay recently after he launched his new song, which is an official remix of the 2008 superhit ballad, ‘Tukh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai’ from the film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. While the original has Shah Rukh Khan and then debutante, Anushka Sharma, this is the ‘hinglish’ version of the song! Congratulations on the collaboration with Yash Raj, but before we talk about that, let me just ask you about your journey so far. When did your interest in music first start and how did you end up being a recording artist? I came into the music industry professionally in 2010 and released my first 3 singles in the first 3 months. By the fourth month, I had dropped my first album – and those were all number one on the BBC download and iTunes charts. I had been part of a music academy and they picked me up, so that is how I started it professionally in 2010 – otherwise I was always singing from the age of 11-12. Did you receive any professional training? Or was it an interest that became a passion and then a profession? I first learnt instruments, Indian instruments and then from there I went into singing – learning

classical and getting opera training, hip hop and a whole range of other things. I am always training – the vocal training never stops. Do you think having a background in such a diverse range of genres of music helps you when you are looking for inspiration or just trying to put together a single or an album? Oh, yes! It absolutely does. Music is a universal language. It’s having that versatility and knowledge that becomes instrumental! (Laughter) You are looked up to as a role model by a lot of young, Asian people who are keen to get into this industry – does that add to the pressure? Or are you just a musician who happens to be of Asian origin? Initially there was a lot of pressure! Especially because in 2010, when I first started, I rose quite quickly! But I am aware of the added responsibility. I am often invited by academies and schools to speak to students to motivate them. And I take the responsibility of being a positive role model very seriously.
Coming to your collaboration with Yash Raj – congratulations again – it is a massive achievement! Tell us how it happened? It came about, literally, as I was sitting in my room one day. I knew I really wanted to do something from the film ‘Rab ne bana di Jodi’; so I put together something and sent it to my producer to produce. My manager then approached Yash Raj – who were very happy with the song. They really liked the music and asked us to shoot a video. The video has been shot it in Pakistan, I believe – tell us more about that! We discussed a few different ideas for the video. It was shot in Pakistan, at the Katas Raj Temple, which is near a small city called Chakwal. It is a beautiful area with many Hindu temples and historical buildings. We shot there for a week and then sent the footage to India. There, Yash Raj mixed it with the footage of Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma from the film and made it look absolutely seamless. I am so delighted with the way the video has turned out! What made you choose ‘Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta hai’? It is such a beautiful song – the concept itself too is lovely – of how the man sees a reflection of God’s love in the girl. I totally fell in love with the song. The way Shah Rukh and Anushka

Azhar, the biopic on cricketer Muhammad Azharuddin’s life starring Emraan Hashmi in the titular role, is a much awaited film. Having been in the works for almost two years, the film features two very important female lead roles – that of Azhar’s love interest, Sangeeta Bijlani and his first wife, Naureen. Asian Style Magazine caught up with both the leading ladies to speak about their careers, aspirations and of course, Azhar. Nargis Fakhri is destiny’s child in many ways. Known for her frank attitude, she is often dubbed the ‘Queen of Cool’ in an industry that is otherwise known for its diva-esque actresses.

Congratulations – you complete 5 years in Bollywood this year (can you believe it?!). Your first film Rockstar came out in 2011. How would you describe your journey so far?
know what to expect! At that time, when Rockstar was released, suddenly I got bombarded with so much negativity that it was a little bit scary!
Ummm – tumultuous!! (Laughs) Yes, that would be a good word. It has really been an up and down journey for me in Bollywood.
It was only much later that I realised I had so many fans and to be honest, they are the ones who are most important – no offense to the critics!
Five years ago, when you first debuted in Rockstar, you received a mixed reception. While most people agreed that you were one of the most beautiful faces to hit our screens in the recent past, critics gave you a lot of flak for your acting skills. Was it difficult then to find your footing in this business when the response might not have been what you had hoped for?
When you chose Madras Café as your second film, there was scepticism as to whether you would be able to pull it off, which was something that you did with much aplomb. Was the decision also based on a desire to showcase your acting a little bit more?
Well, actually I didn’t expect anything because I just came into this very naïve and blind. I had decided to come to India to act just because it felt like a new adventure at that time. For me, everything was a surprise. I didn’t even
I really feel weird saying this, because I know so many people keep saying the same thing, but I am the kind of person who literally goes with the flow and lives each day as it comes and I mostly decide things without really planning or looking for anything in particular! Like a freeflowing energy mantra. That’s how I initially got into Bollywood – by being open-minded, free flowing

and accepting different opportunities in life. So when people ask me, ’what is your strategy’ or how have you made these selections, I really don’t know what to say! When I listen to narrations, I will get a pretty good feeling. If I am excited about a role, I will do it, if not then not! That’s it! It sounds too simple, doesn’t it? Is that an easy thing to do? I always feel that if you are too calculating or stressing or think too much, or being too closed, it doesn’t really work out in anyone’s favour. I often say, if it happens, it happens, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t! Does it help to be this detached then when, for example, when dealing with critics? I think in the beginning with Rockstar, I was just shocked! I had never experienced anything like that. I was a regular person and I had never been in to spotlight before like that so it was a new experience, so overwhelming and it took me a while to find my footing. What I did and where I was and what was happening was a bit of a blur. Only afterwards, did I realise that this is pretty much how a film in made and released. From that moment on, nothing else could really shake me. It really helped me understand that that is the way things and that is just the way it is and you have to accept it. Your role in Spy was spoken about so much and it was genuinely one of the most interesting characters in the story. Spy, itself, was a very mainstream Hollywood film and a commercial success too. How was that experience? You know there’s always that friend or that person that you know – where the
weirdest, strangest things, happen to them by accident – I am THAT person! Maybe because I am an open and accepting person and I put an intention out into the universe, and I didn’t stress about it and I was open to opportunity (perhaps most importantly) – because a lot of people, they get opportunities but hold themselves back. Even when I got Rockstar, I could have been like other people and said, oh no I don’t have enough money, oh no I can’t afford to fly down there, or oh no, it’s too scary or oh no, I am not ready! I could have had all these apprehensions which could have prevented me from giving this a shot, but I had this logic that ‘oh, this looks like a really cool opportunity, let’s give it a try!’That attitude helped me get Spy and work in such a cool project. Coming to Azhar – the trailer and the stills look fabulous! Your character is based on the life of Sangeeta Bijlani. How did you approach the character and get under its skin? Were you able to meet Sangeeta? No unfortunately, I couldn’t meet her. I was probably the only one who couldn’t meet the person on whom their character was based. But thankfully, I had the help of the director, Tony D’Souza. He gave me some Sangeeta Bijlani films including Tridev to watch and I really enjoyed that! Also, I relied heavily on the internet, I googled lots of stuff. And I think for the most part it was the director helping a lot. Because he knew the story and the character very well. I also had to fit a certain look. My stature, my height, my slenderness – the model look. Sangeeta was also a model and really beautiful. So we dressed me up to be totally like the character. I had the 90’s styling, I
had big wig hair. She has amazing hair. I did the best with what I had and what I got and now, I guess, it is up to the audiences to judge or compare, and decide how they feel about it. Was it difficult to play a non-fictional character? Is the responsibility greater? It’s funny because I didn’t think about all this until now whilst I am doing the promotions. I was just doing my job! I was acting a role. I think it was better because I wouldn’t have wanted to worry about the responsibility while shooting. But during the promotions, it hit me and I am like oh yeah – it is true, people are going to draw all sorts of comparisons and you are right, it is more difficult! It is harder to portray a living person, who people have seen and watched over the years. To imbibe their mannerisms, the way they talk or the way they walk or how they behave. It all has to come through because you want the character and the actor playing the character to be believable! So again the director played a huge part in correcting me if he thought I was straying from the character at all. There was a lot of work on this from the director. I think Emraan had the hardest part though! Azhar was always in the public eye and has all these quirks in his mannerisms. So you have to get into the body movements and how they speak and all of that – it’s really hard. I was lucky, my character was very graceful, elegant and sophisticated. Which is not me! Coming to your own self – in your interaction with fans on social media and in your interviews, you come across as being so grounded and yet so effortlessly cool. You seem like such a normal person and I guess people don’t really expect that from
a Bollywood celebrity, especially an actress. How do you manage to stay level-headed? I just have friends who are normal! So I have to be normal otherwise they wouldn’t be very happy with me! I don’t have any friends here really, and all my friends from before are all regular people! So I am regular and it makes me stay regular. It’s also my nature. I am an easy-going person and super-friendly. I am like this with everyone, even strangers. For example, if I am on the subway in New York and someone talks to me, I will have a conversation with them! We are all humans! I have even counselled people on their love problems on the subway!! What’s next in the pipeline for Nargis Fakhri? This year is back-to-backto-back! Azhar, Housefull 3, Ganjo and a cameo in Dishoom! So you might probably get tired of seeing me on the screen (laughs). After all of this, I am going to take a long vacation! I have experienced so much in the past five years – I feel so good about myself. I have worked hard and made a name for myself. I have a niche that I have carved out and this year is super huge with four films. So yes, I feel very happy! Thank you! All the best for Azhar and the rest of the year!

Prachi Desai entered the industry with a splash. Her first role in Rock On, as Farhan Akhtar’s wife made the actress, who had previously worked extensively on television, a film star. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the beautiful actress, but she is back with Azhar and is all set to put her career back on track! You started your journey in Bollywood with Rock On almost 8 years ago!– where your role received a great reception. since then you have done many quite different roles – how has your Bollywood journey been so far? It has been one hell of a journey. Really, I havent really planned much from my side and took each day as it came. There have been lots of very interesting experiences along the way. I don’t come from a film family myself, so there hasn’t been a grand plan or anyone’s path that I could follow into the industry. Having said that however, acting is my passion and it is something that I love doing and I am so grateful that I get to do what I love every single day! All my different experiences in this industry have taught me so much – today I feel I am so much more evolved as a person. It has been a journey of a lifetime! We are extremely excited to see you back on the big screen after a gap of almost two years – were you waiting for the right script to come along? After Awaari and around that time too in 2014, I was working on a couple of projects and these were still in the pre-production stage. And required a lot of time from me – people actually don’t realise how lengthy the process to make a film is. So I was involved in these projects for almost a year, most of 2014 and early 2015 and then they didn’t see the light of the day. It happens to many films and I
guess it was just unlucky that it happened with my projects then. Most of 2015, I was preparing for and shooting for Azhar and then Rock On 2 so now I am back on track and have really put my heart and soul into these projects! Azhar will be your second film with Emraan Hashmi after the very successful Once Upon a Time in Mumbai – how was the experience of working with him again? How is he as a co-star?

Even in terms of the industry, it set a different trend. Rock On 2 is a sequel and the story becomes even more interesting. There are a couple of new characters and it has been such an incredible process to be making the second film. When we were making the original, none of us ever thought that 8 years on, we would be working on a sequel. I am really looking forward to the release of Rock On 2. 2016 has been an exciting year for me and I hope that it only gets better! We love seeing you on the big screen – and wish you all the best for Azhar and all your other projects!

I have heard that cream and gel based eyeliners are quite good, so I would like your advice on which ones are the best for me to try. (Samina K, East London ) Ayesha Says: Dear Samina, You are right - gel based eyeliners are indeed much more versatile than the others. Do you use eyeliner regularly? If yes, then gel eyeliners can be as easy as the liquid or pencil ones with regards to the ease of application. If you are not yet very skilled at lining your eyes, especially when it comes to the more dramatic styles, then I would recommend practicing your application with a liquid eyeliner before.

Gel eyeliners are quite popular now and while earlier it was difficult to find good ones, there are quite a few companies that do gel eyeliners now. My favourite ones, that I
have tried and tested over the years, are ‘fluidline’ from M.A.C. Cosmetics and ‘long-lasting gel eye liner’ from Bobbi Brown. Both give intense colour payoff and stay in place for many hours (unless, like me sometimes, you rub your eyelid unconsciously!). On the high street, Maybelline also sells gel eyeliner for which I have seen some great reviews. Most gel eyeliners come in a round
pot and you will have to buy an eyeliner brush (with a thin straight or slanted end) with the pot in order to use the product. When using gel pots, it is important to keep the lid tightly on the pot when not in use to stop the product from drying out! If you are feeling a bit experimental then you can even get these in a range of different colours.

Over the past 2 years she has been breaking out around the cheeks quite regularly and even when the acne disappears, it leaves behind red acne marks. I have taken her to a dermatologist who has said that it is part of the hormonal changes that she is going through and medically there is nothing to worry about. However, my daughter feels very conscious about the red marks and I would be thankful for your advice in how she can conceal these. (Jenny M, London)

Ayesha Says: Dear Jenny,
Growing up many changes in our bodies make us very selfconscious. It is important to receive support at this delicate age so that our confidence is not affected and that is the most important first step. Since the marks are red in colour, your daughter will need to apply a colour corrector before she conceals. To neutralise the red tones, she will need to use a green corrector, as this cancels out the harsh pink colours. There a few different brands that do these; I have used the Smashbox green corrector in the past for similar cases and it has been quite effective. After applying the corrector, dab some standard skin-coloured concealer on top as normal. I’d suggest using a medium coverage concealer for this purpose.

Being a different shade on the neck and the face is actually quite common. When it comes to matching the foundation, there’s really no right or wrong way and depends on the how different the shades are. Generally, if your neck downwards you are the same colour with your face being a different shade, then match it upwards from your neck. If the neck is a different shade with the chest and shoulders and the face being the same colour (usually happens due to hyperpigmentation on the neck), then match the foundation downwards from the face.

There was an obvious buzz even much before the Bollygoods exhibition opened its doors to visitors at the Dorchester Hotel in London this week. The exhibition brings together various design elements from India and the wider subcontinent. With a special focus on Bollywood, you can expect the exhibition to be a riot of colour and craft. Monday’s exhibition was the second edition, building on the success of the very popular first edition. How befitting then that Bollywood’s First Lady, Gauri Khan, was invited as a special Guest of Honour.
Gauri Khan, the multitalented wife of superstar Shah Rukh Khan, is herself a much-acclaimed interior designer. She is the brains behind the interiors of luxury hotels and residences in the Middle East as well as various parts of India.

Shrihari jewellers, the people behind Deepika Padukone’s droolworthy baubles in the blockbuster Bajirao Mastani, were happy to present their ‘Mastani’ collection. Women of all ages were seen flocking to the counter to get their Gauri Khan hands on the beautifully crafted ‘maang teekas’ and ‘jhoomars’.

‘It is so refreshing to see quality traditional designer wear in London. For years, we could shop these clothes and jewellery only when we visited India and Pakistan. I am so happy that exhibitions like these are bringing the best of the subcontinent to consumers in London with such convenience!’ Other guests at the exhibition too echoed a similar emotion. Poets Corner Spike Milligan comedian, writer, poet and actor. The son of an Irish father and an English mother, he was born in Pune, India where he spent most of his early life. He was best known for his surreal sense of humour and love of dark comedy. Spike Milligan fought in World War II and performed musical shows for troops in his free time, kicking off a lifelong passion for entertaining. He would later go on to create ‘The Goon Show’ a comedic drama widely praised as inspiring later shows such as ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus’. aimed towards young people. He suffered with severe bipolar disorder for most of his life, and spoke candidly about his struggles. Despite serving in the British Army for six years, he was refused British citizenship and had to claim Irish citizenship in order to avoid becoming stateless. Milligan’s dark humour continued right up until his death with the self-chosen epitaph on his gravestone reading ‘Dúirt mé leat go raibh mé breoite’, translated in English as ‘I told you I was sick’. His irreverent and alternative style of writing and comedy inspired an entire generation of entertainers and his enormous body of work ensures that his legacy lives on.
