Councillors on the Bradford Council Planning team have approved a change of business hours for a Bradford snooker hall. The On Q Snooker Centre, based off Great Horton Road will now be allowed to stay open till 2am.

Bradford Council's Bradford Planning Panel have now approved the new hours on an 18 month trial basis "to allow the Council sufficient time to assess the impact of the development on the neighbouring residential street of Grantham Road,

where complaints about noise and general disturbance have been recieved." Providing a new application is submitted the centre will have to revert to its original 11pm closing time on June 13 2019

Mouneed Younas applied to extend the opening hours of his snooker hall in Shearbrdge Mills to 4am from its current time of 11pm. However, planning officers spoke with the applicant and the closing time was agreed from 4am to 2am. The planning report said: "It appears the snooker centre has been opening later than its 11pm permission." There had been six objections to the plans, saying it would cause early morning noise and nuisance. There were also over 50 letters of support, claiming it would benefit people on late shift work, like taxi drivers.

Bradford children’s reading supported by local businesses with Literacy Toolkits Bradford businesses now have the chance to support local children’s reading, thanks to the National Literacy Trust’s new Literacy Toolkits scheme. Literacy Toolkits, created in partnership with Walker Books, are boxes filled with resources to inspire pupils to enjoy reading and help teachers and parents to support children’s literacy skills. They can be gifted by businesses to Bradford primary schools or community groups.

“We are delighted to offer businesses and other organisations the opportunity to support Bradford schools with a Literacy Toolkit. Gifting a toolkit is a simple way to support our Bradford Stories campaign, make a difference to your local community and show your commitment to raising literacy levels. The materials in the toolkit can be used for years to come to inspire hundreds of children to fall in love with reading.”

In support of the Bradford Stories literacy campaign in the city, Provident Financial, the Bradford-based financial services company, are the first business to buy Literacy Toolkits. Provident are gifting 24 toolkits to primary schools and community groups across the city.

Jane Winterbotham, Publishing Director at Walker Books, said:

The new Literacy Toolkit is filled with resources to inspire pupils to enjoy reading and help teachers and parents to support children’s literacy skills. Each box includes: •A range of 50 fantastic books from Walker Books, aimed at children and young people aged 2 to 11 •Fun activity sheets and other information for teachers to use in the classroom and send home •Guidance and templates to help schools engage both parents and their local community •National Literacy Trust membership for a local school for one year, giving access to inspiring teaching resources and tools for outstanding literacy provision. Imran Hafeez, Manager of the National Literacy Trust Hub in Bradford, said:

“We’re thrilled to be a part of this initiative with the wonderful National Literacy Trust. It’s a brilliant scheme which we hope will help not only promote literacy in local schools but provide a connection between businesses and the community. We hope we’ll see many businesses take up this building opportunity to help support schools in a love of reading, using a

selection of our titles.” Cathy Prior, Community Affairs Executive from Provident Financial added, “As one of the largest employers in the area, we want to improve the chances of young adults in Bradford leaving school with the skills they need, and to give them the opportunity to go on to employment or to further education. Or, if we’re lucky, to embark on a sparkling career at Provident! “That’s why we’ve signed up to the National Literacy Trust’s Vision for Literacy Business Pledge to close the literacy gap in Bradford. And through partnering with Leading Children and local schools, we aim to improve the prospects of Bradford’s school-leavers and create a second-to-none,vibrant and ambitious young-workforce.” To find out more about Literacy Toolkits, visit literacytrust.org.uk/literacytoolkit.

Nearly 30 years for gang who planned a spate of ‘fearsome’ robberies

A former supermarket employee and her boyfriend were among a gang sentenced to more than 28 years in prison after they admitted roles in a conspiracy to rob cash-in-transit vans. Nisha Nadeem and Tariq Aziz, both 20, were jailed at Bradford Crown Court on Friday 15 December in relation to the conspiracy, which involved the robbery of a G4S cash-in-transit van in Bradford earlier this year.

Nadeem was sentenced to two years. The 17-year-old male received five years and four months in a Young Offenders’ Institution.

Enquiries by Bradford District CID revealed that Nadeem, who was working as an assistant at the Tesco Express store in Stanningley at the time, had passed on information to Aziz about when cash in transit vans visited the convenience stores in Bradford and Leeds.

Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Howard, of Bradford District Police, said:

She was arrested and charged with conspiracy to rob, but later pleaded guilty to an alternative offence of aiding and abetting the incident in Stanningley.

“This gang planned to carry out a series of robberies on cash-intransit vans in Bradford and Leeds by using Nadeem’s knowledge of when and where the cash collections would take place.

Bradford And the Brexit Divorce

Asian Communities still unclear on what the future holds By GRAHAME ANDERSON heritage studying for a law degree who doesn’t want to be named, told Asian Sunday she voted to remain. “I like the free movement and it’s good to be British and European. My mother however, wanted to vote leave, as she feels the UK has had too many Eastern European’s come in and reduce opportunities for others.

The advent of the first Brexit agreement has sparked a huge debate in the Asian community. With reports of many people who voted to divorce the EU at the time of the referendum, now seemingly having a change of heart, what does the future hold? Asian Sunday takes a closer look at the break-up of the partnership.

Finance specialist Shabab Gulfraz, who voted to leave argued: “In my view at the time of the vote there was a great amount of uncertainty in terms of what Brexit is, how it will impact on us and whether it was good for the country or not. In hindsight I believe I made the right decision. This is because the EU “GP waiting times seem to be much have not changed, and yes financially there may be short longer and there are very few jobs available. I believe there was a lot of term adjustments for the UK to make, but I believe in the long fake news being given during the term, it will lead to a stronger EU referendum, and some people Britain.” got caught up with that information. For example, my mum Brexit Worries struggles to get a GP appointment and she believes much of the reason Nadeem Murtaja, chair of racial is due to the number of Eastern justice and human rights charity Europeans who have now moved for Just West Yorkshire added: “It is into the area. clear that the UK is moving “As a result, GP waiting times have towards becoming a more hostile environment for minorities than increased dramatically. So, my mum was led to believe if she voted ever before. In a post Brexit world this situation has the potential to to leave, the Eastern Europeans become even worse. If as predicted would then have to leave too. I the UK moves to a skills, based would love it if there was a second immigration policy, like the referendum on our marriage with Australian system - that will Europe, as before the facts around EU were not clear. I think people are severely impact on EU citizens - as research suggests more aware of the facts now.”

British Elections Study In the light of the British Elections Study revealing the ethnic minority vote was crucial, outspoken journalist Yasmin-Alibhai-Brown has said, 'British Asians need to take some of the blame for the Brexit vote.' So, did they make the wrong vote, and should there be a second referendum? In canvassing the feelings of locals given 54.2 per cent in Bradford voted to leave the EU, it's also worth noting voters in Luton, Hillingdon and Slough produced similar results. We discovered information chaos still holds sway given the complexity of this political divorce agreement. Studying the Evidence More recently released ward-level data from the West London boroughs of Ealing and Hounslow, provides strong support for the idea Asian voters were actually more inclined towards leave than the polls suggested. Given all of this it's not unreasonable to think such leave votes could not have been delivered without a significant number of Asian voters opting for Brexit. On the other side of the coin, the borough of Ealing voted to remain by a whopping 60.4 per cent. the Broadway and Greenwards in Southall – primarily a South Asian residential district – voted only very narrowly to Remain. Fascinating Trends The British study confirms the more prosperous, mainly white wards voted strongly in favour of Remain. The Asian areas, on the other hand, were much more

The Economic Viewpoint

evenly split between Remain and Leave. Poorer largely white areas containing council estates voted to Leave in high numbers. One third of those from a BAME background voted for Brexit, so claims of Asians being to blame for Brexit simply don't add up in this sense. It should be pointed out BAME communities make up 8.1million of the UK population.

Many political pundits believe South Asian voters who strongly identify with the UK were left unoffended. This was because the 'target' was perceived to be Eastern Europeans originating from non-Commonwealth countries, taking advantage of freedom of movement.

The Lib Dems failed however, to make much progress in last June’s general election. Meanwhile Offering voters the chance to ratify the Brexit deal in a referendum, was one of the clearest dividing lines in last year’s Labour leadership contest in which Jeremy Corbyn defeated the challenger Owen Smith. Shadow Home secretary Diane Abbot says: “Labour does not

The debate will gather pace as the divorce gathers momentum, though many believe it's still too early to say if a post-Brexit Britain will be positive for minorities living in the UK.

UN Human Rights Chief suggests that Aung San Suu Kyi could face genocide charges by RAHEEMA KHAN There are around a million Muslim Rohingya people in Burma, but they have faced years of mistreatment at the hands of the government, which does not recognise them at citizens. They also face widespread discrimination from Buddhist majority population and are often referred to as Bengalis, alluding to a common myth that they are illegal immigrants. The British Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, called for the violence to end, saying the treatment of the Rohingya was “besmirching the reputation of Burma”, also known as Myanmar, and appealing to Aung San Suu Kyi to act. Turkey's President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has however been more damning. He said there was a “genocide” occurring in Rakhine. He has accused Burma's forces

of genocide and saying those who turned a blind eye to events were complicit. “Those who close their eyes to this genocide perpetuated under the cover of democracy are its collaborators,” Mr Erdogan said. It seems the United Nations human rights chief has also, claimed the conflict in Burma, which has led to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims fleeing the country, could one day be classified as genocide. Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein hinted that he believed Burma's leaders could be charged if it is deemed they have not done enough to stop the trouble. Speaking to BBC's Panorama, which aired on Monday 18 December, the UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights said it would not surprise him if genocide charges were one day brought before the country's leaders. He said: 'The elements suggest you cannot rule out the

possibility that acts of genocide have been committed.

'It's very hard to establish because the thresholds are high but it wouldn't surprise me in the future if the court were to make such a finding on the basis of what we see.' If the country's leaders are aware of the violence - which has seen dozens of people raped, killed and maimed and received vast media coverage - they could be 'culpable', Mr Al Hussein said.

The special report by Panorama also featured civilians who escaped giving horrific accounts of violence and rape by Burmese soldiers and other armed groups.

Reports claim that nearly 650,000 Rohingya - around two thirds of the entire population had fled Myanmar, by early December, following a barrage of attacks led by the army that began in late August. Hundreds of villages were burned, and thousands are reported to have been killed. Al Hussein said: “There is evidence of terrible atrocities being committed: massacres, murders and mass rapes - as I heard myself when I was in the

In a small frying pan, add 3-4 tbsp ghee. Evenly spread a generous amount of soft vermicelli, which covers the entire surface. Cook vermicelli until golden brown on each side. This may take around 8-10 minutes. Repeat this process till you have enough circles to assemble. Each Kunafa uses two Vermicelli rounds/circles. Mix Vanilla Custard with 4 tbsp of water; pour in the milk while stirring to avoid any lumps. Cook on medium heat till it thickens. Turn the heat off and cool it. Pour a generous amount of custard in between two layers of the fried vermicelli circles. Abundantly pour lukewarm sugar syrup on top; let it sit for 10 minutes then press a few times to help it absorb the syrup properly. Garnish with khoya, pistachios, and almonds.

Cancer…a different approach to support When you receive a cancer diagnosis the initial reaction is always one of shock. •Why is this happening to me? •What happens now? •Am I going to be ok? At the start the hospital will take care of you; they will plan your treatment, book your appointments and support you every step of the way along your medical journey. But what about the other things – the practical and emotional matters that the hospital can’t help with and what about your loved ones who need support too? That’s where Cancer Support Yorkshire can help, with almost 30 years of experience we know what people need to get them through the emotional rollercoaster of a cancer journey and we offer it all under one roof. Firstly there is the financial impact Illness is always costly. It is far more difficult for someone who is ill to manage on the same income as someone who is fit and well, yet it often the case that a person who is ill has to manage on a much lower income. The range and complexity of benefits available mean that people find it difficult to work their way through them, as a result, their weekly income loss can be quite substantial. Our Welfare Rights team are here to help with the financial and practical issues faced by cancer patients, their carers and families. Secondly there is the emotional and physical impact Dealing with cancer and the treatments that come with it can be extremely difficult. Our Wellbeing service offers a wide range of support to help overcome these difficulties;

MEET NIKKI , A VOLUNTEER THERAPIST AT CANCER SUPPORT YORKSHIRE whether that's by reducing stress and tension, relaxing and easing sleeplessness, or giving you coping skills to deal with anxiety. Our complementary therapies, counselling, groups and classes are invaluable as they give you time to find yourself again. And finally there are the practical problems. What if you need to get to the hospital for treatment but are unable to get there - you can’t drive, you have no one to take you, you are too unwell to catch a bus and a taxi is too expensive. We are extremely fortunate to have a team of volunteer drivers who can pick you up and take you to cancer related appointments at the hospital if you have no other means of getting there. For some this service alone can be a great help. All of the services that we offer are free to access and completely confidential. There is no other service quite like it in the local area and we are proud of that fact. We hope to be sharing more about the

services we offer with you every month in the Asian Sunday and hope you will come and drop in for a chat at anyone of our centres in Bradford or Skipton or simply give us a call on 01274 77 66 88 to make a referral or simply to find out more about us. A cup of tea and a listening ear might be all the support that you need or it could be the first step towards a happier you. www.csyorkshire.org.uk

Nikki offers a range of therapies, once a month on a Monday morning. Therapies on offer include - aromatherapy massage or a deeper Swedish massage to ease tension and knots in the shoulders and neck. Indian head massage (oil free). Facials including deep cleansing, scrub, face mask and face massage. Nicola can also offer a hot wax therapy for arthritic pain in the hands. Having been through her own experiences, Nikki recognises the real benefit that these therapies can have for people during what can be a difficult and stressful time. “I decided to volunteer at Cancer Support Yorkshire after my Dad passed away in July 2016 from cancer and heart problems. "Initially, I became involved and helped out at the pop-up shop in Craven Court. I’ve been a trained therapist for 7 years and have my own salon in Harden, called ‘Aroma-Nicol’. "I wish I had known about the therapies available at the Skipton Centre when I was caring for my Dad. I could really have done with a nice treatment to help me relax and destress.”

Fears Grow For Safety Of Scottish Sikh Detained in Indian Prison By GRAHAME ANDERSON A British man released from police custody in India is facing more time in prison following fresh allegations despite no charges being brought. Jagtar Singh Johal, 30, from Dumbarton in West Dumbartonshire, was detained in Jalandhar in the state of Punjab earlier this month for allegedly financing weapons used in the murder of several officials in the country. Mr Singh wasn't actually charged with any crime however, but now faces new allegations over the death of a Christian priest in 2015. Court Appearance He appeared in court early last Friday and was sent to prison until 30 November under judicial custody. According to those campaigning for his release, the newly married Scotsman had been tortured by police involving “body separation techniques and electrocution to body parts”, after plained clothed officers threw a sack over his head and snatched him from the street when out shopping with his wife. The couple tied the knot in the region back in October. Supporters also fear Mr Singh may die in police custody unless the UK government acts soon. They say the Government has ignored the plight of Scotsman Mr Singh, known to friends and family as Jaggi. Brother Contacted

Jagtar Singh Johal, 30, from Dumbarton detained in a Prison in India

His brother, 32-year-old Gurpreet Sing Johat, learned Jagta had been taken by Indian police in a phone call from his sister in law. He said: “She phoned saying this has happened, we didn't know what it was, all the police were saying is come to this place.” Mr Johat flew to India the following day but said his family members who were also in the country, including his sister-in-law and aunt, were soon forced into hiding over fears they would also be detained."Police had tried to seize my brother's passport but I was able to hand it in to British officials in India." Mr Johat was also forced to leave on November

9 over fears for his own safety.British Protest Last Thursday hundreds of Sikh protesters marched outside the Foreign Office in Whitehall in support of Mr Johal. A huge crowd brought the road outside the building to a standstill, holding placards emblazoned with Mr Singh's face and the slogan 'Free Jaggi Now'. Many wore branded hoodies with several of the banners showing the Brit's face over a Scottish flag. The protesters were joined by Gurpreet who told the crowd via megaphone: "The government has failed to act on the case and have stripped Sikhs of their rights. He has lived 30 years of his life in this country, and if this is happening to him what rights do we have as British citizens? They have got a duty to a British citizen. He's British by birth, he's not British by acquired nationality. Governmental Concern External Relations Secretary Fiona Hyslop says the Scottish Government is “deeply concerned” about the case, and the First Minister has requested updates as more information comes through. Meanwhile, Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP), headed by Sikh Jagmeet Singh, has contacted his foreign affairs minister to suggest the Canadian Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains could intervene. In a letter, NDP politician Cheryl Hardcastle suggests Bains, who is in India, could 'offer his assistance on the ground'. Hardcastle says this would be justified because Canada is a signatory to the UN Convention Against Torture, adding: “We hope Jagtar Singh Johal is allowed to

to have a fair trial, and provided with access to an independent medical examiner as requested by his legal team. It is crucial he is not subjected to any further torture while in custody of Punjab Police.” MP'S Intervention Jagtar’s local MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has revealed:: “There has been an incredible response to the campaign to help Jagtar, with messages of support pouring in from people all over Scotland and across the world. “We cannot ignore such serious allegations of human rights violations. Along with Preet Gill MP, chair of the APPG for British Sikhs, and supported by a cross-party group of MPs, I will be making further representations to the Punjab chief minister to highlight the concerns voiced by people across the UK. Whilst we’re seeing some progress, it’s now two weeks since Jagtar was first arrested and despite appearing in court several times he has yet to be charged with any crime. Conspiracy worries The Sikh Federation said the 30-year-old should be enjoying married life, but ''finds himself the subject of some sort of conspiracy hatched by the Punjab police and leading politicians''. Mr Singhs lawyers have applied for emergency visitation.

Bradford’s Dayal Sharma remembers Bollywood legend Shashi Kapoor By FATIMA PATEL Whilst the entire tinsel town mourned the death of the legendary actor, fans across the globe also took a few moments out to pay respect and remember the handsome actor. Bradford’s very own Dayal Sharma, who used to be a radio presenter in the city, recalls meeting Shashi Kapoor during his visit to Bradford in the 1980’s. “Mr Shashi Kapoor came to Bradford in the late 1980’s for a film promotion. At the time I used to work as a broadcaster for Pennine Radio, so I was given the good fortune of interviewing him. “What immediately struck me about Shashiji was his striking good looks. He was such a handsome man. I remember taking him for a drink and all the women were drooling over him and it wasn’t just the South Asian ladies. “One woman even tried to touch his cheeks” Shashi Kapoor, no doubt was well known for his European good looks and cultured disposition. Fact is many a woman around the world yearned to be Shashi Kapoor’s true love. But dreams of his magical kiss were limited to wife Jennifer Kendal. That didn’t blunt his allure though. Shashi was the best-looking man in the country and he had women swooning over him just as Dayal witnessed.

Kabhie, Deewar, Silsila and many more. Many of which were with Amitabh Bachchan. “When I interviewed Shashiji, he had described to me his friendship with Amitabh Bachchan. He told me they were really good friends.” Dayal told Asian Sunday

Shashi Kapoor was 79 years old when he died, and he leaves behind a long string of successful movies to his name. It is said that he sometimes did not like doing dance numbers in movies but later realised that it was an integral part of Hindi cinema.

“He was a very kind hearted and generous man. I took Shashiji to my house and at the time my daughters were between 4 and 5 years old and he just took them into his lap and played with them, as though a family relative had just come over.

Shashi Kapoor, was known for his films like Awaara, Namak Halaal,

“I felt as though I was sat with my brother. I felt like I was the

luckiest man in the world, sat with such a big star, who was handsome, angelic, calm and caring.” The romantic hero of the golden era of Hindi Cinema was suffering through a kidney ailment, he had been struggling with his health for a number of weeks. The actor, director and producer passed away at the Kokilaben Ambani Hospital in Mumbai on Monday 4 December. His last rites were performed in the city with almost the whole of Bollywood in attendance. He is most remembered for his famous dialogue “Mere paas maa hai.” From the movie Deewar. There was no doubt Shashi was a fine actor, as he impressed critics

with his acting abilities in many other films too, after all he had the Govind Nihalani and Shyam Benegal more than made up for it. He knew well how to balance art with commerce. With so many accolades and nothing but generous words for the Padma Bhushan awardee, Dayal, said it was heartbreaking when he heard Shashiji had passed away. “I couldn’t sleep when I found out. In that one meeting with me, Shashji had left such an impact. He was so graceful, softly spoken and a real people’s person. I will miss him. “I wish, may God rest his soul and I

hope he returns to this earth in another form, because we need people like him. Rest in peace dearest Shashi Kapoor”

Influence of women in any field is good, says Farhan Akhtar Actor-filmmaker-singer Farhan Akhtar hopes that actresses backing films as producers is not just a passing trend as he believes that women's influence, irrespective of the field, is good for everyone. Over the years, actresses like Dia Mirza, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, Chitrangda Singh and Richa Chadha have shown interest in contributing to filmmaking as producers.

Asked what he thought about the trend, Akhtar told press: "That's how it should be. Not just actresses, there are also a lot of female producers and women who are working in different companies and handling the creative aspect of those companies." "It is amazing to see that. The more influence that we have of women in any field, why just films... it can be sports or politics also, it's good for everyone because they have a different perspective on things because they have experienced life in different ways from what we (men) have; so, it makes a difference," added the brother of director Zoya Akhtar. Will watch 'Padmavati' no matter when it releases: Anurag Basu

Director Anurag Basu, who finds it bizarre that the whole controversy around Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Padmavati" is based merely on perception and assumption, says he will watch the period drama whenever it releases. Basu was at an event where he met 40 children -- who are fighting cancer -- from the Tata Memorial Centre. He was asked to comment on the "Padmavati" controversy. "I think this is bizarre and funny. When the first time the attack (against the makers) happened, the first thing that came to my mind was 'Do they know the script? Have they read it?' The entire controversy is based on perception and assumption and what could be more funny than this? The whole thing is based on 'Maybe' and I find it really bizarre. How can they create such a ruckus on a 'maybe'?" He believes it is a "win-win for everybody" as "all of them are getting the benefit of the controversy". "I don't think Sanjay Leela Bhansali should be worried because his film is delayed, as he has many fans, like myself, who will watch the film no matter when it releases," Basu added. Known for movies like "Life in a... Metro", "Gangster" and "Barfi!", Basu said he is currently working on a few projects simultaneously. "But I will announce the schedule very soon as to when which project will come out." On the trend of biopics, he said: "It's a good thing that people are getting inspired by biographies. Nowadays, people don't read, so all they grasp about life is from films." Basu's last film as a director and writer was "Jagga Jasoos", featuring Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor.

OPINION

Much a do about a flask of tea, hoors of jannah and praying for forgiveness A few months ago, I was referred to hospital by my GP, who warned me beforehand: “Looks like you will be needing surgery on your nose.” A few weeks later, I was on my way to hospital and the surgeon confirmed what my Doctor suspected. As he leered into my nose: “It’s too far gone, the only way is to have surgery, I’m afraid.” The surgeon drew a picture on a plain piece of paper explaining how my septum had deviated totally to the left and the opening on the left side of my nose was tiny and the opening on the right side, was now massive – in layman’s terms – my nose was as bent as a five-bob note. “I have been doing this for over 20 years,” gushed the surgeon in a truly haughty colonial manner... “Haw, haw, I will be done with you in twenty minutes,” blimey, I thought, ‘hope he’s not got any Jimmy Saville sort of tendencies, or I’m truly done for!’ Sadly, the ‘Carry On’ sketch would not end there. That said, if I was to choose a ‘Carry On’ character to play in my very own ‘Carry On Doctor’ movie, It would have to be Francis Bigger, played by the late Frankie Howard: “Oh just some pain in the back. It’s a ooh, ooh dear.” Well, I had to get ready to start playing the victim, especially after my dear mother decided to announce the fact that her beloved son had to have an operation to all her daughters: “My son’s going to have to go to hospital to have an operation on his nose,” she said, before looking at me with a twinge of sadness. Did I lap it up? You bet I did! As we got closer to operation time, my mother kept on trying to get me to say something like: “I don’t want to take my wife, I want to take my mother, the one who gave birth to me, nurtured, clothed, taught me everything, you get my drift?!

The day of reckoning came, and my parents were at my house about 10 minutes before I had initially expected them, I could get used to this I thought, before thinking: “Nah, Asian time doesn’t apply when it comes to emergencies.” We got to the hospital and as soon as we walked in, mother was aghast by an unholy sight: “Free coffee and tea, I’m definitely going to have some.” Her comment actually made me feel at ease as I felt like Francis Bigger as I knew the next quirky comment was not far off. She did get her tea, via the traditional flask she had smuggled into the hospital: “She sipped away to her heart’s content – it was like her Shawshank Redemption moment where Tim Robbins no longer feels like a criminal, as he sits on top of a building, with only his dreams and aspirations as company. We then saw the smiling face of their surgeon with every turn of the doorknob: “Are you ready to breathe better now Sir?” “I felt like responding with, “Gee saheb,” but since this guy was going to be cutting my nose open any time soon, I went with “I am indeed,” complete with a water melon smile. All the way through the two hour, wait through the pre-operative process; my mother just prayed the holy quran for two hours, with her flask in tow, occasionally stopping for a few minutes to ask me what I had ordered for lunch, to ensure she could also have a nibble, and also to praise the nonmuslims for their hospitality and kindness: “They are so polite,” before breaking out in duaa for the entire nation, and then back to reading. I was eventually taken to the operating room and the real wait began, my mother asked me for forgiveness, it was like I was coming back in a box or something, granted you never know when our time is up, but I thought, bugger, if I do, I should also get praying, in case the almighty accepts me and gets my nikkah done to all those ‘Hoors’, then is there any point in coming back? What a predicament to be in eh?

When I asked her to accompany me, she was over the moon – and as the day of reckoning got closer, I didn’t really think about it much. My Mrs asked: “Are you scared?” I retorted “Nah, not even thought about it.”

I was given my anaesthetic and instead of slowly succumbing, I was knocked out straight away, and the next thing I know, I was in pain, and all sorts of women waiting by me, to wake up, nurses unfortunately, not the Hoor’s of jannah.

It was only hours before I went into the hospital did it hit me. My boss put his arms around me after turning his face away from a hospital diagram I was given: “OHHHHH, take it easy mate", before turning back and retorting: “If something happens and you pass away, I’ll look after your kids,” before nonchalantly patting me on my back, and shouting at my colleagues who were left open mouthed: “What, I only said I’ll look after his kids if he dies, I’m trying to help him here.”

I was then taken back to mother who smothered me in hugs and was probably the main reason why the operation went so well, she constantly prayed and visited me for days after I had come home, I saw first-hand what our mothers go through for us, pray, console, make us laugh make us happy – in a totally unconditional manner – may she be rewarded and may all our mothers be rewarded with eternal bliss for the many sacrifices they give for us day after day and night after night.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND NITROGELATO ICE CREAM

An Asian Sunday Scoop By FATIMA PATEL

We all remember being served a cornet from a colourful van and a vendor in a white coat. Now, we can share that same experience in an innovative parlour, where all the staff have donned white lab coats to produce the perfect ice cream. Yes, the art has moved firmly into the future thanks to the genius of people like the colourful Heston Blumenthal, the insight of solicitor and businessman Zaheer Mahmood, and one very special ingredient – liquid nitrogen. Ice Cream of The Future Here Now Not to be licked by competitors, food capital Bradford presents 'Nitrogelato', a unique concept in the science of ice cream production. The

aim of Nitrogelato was to bring the theatre and intrigue of wacky desserts out of fine dining kitchens and into the high street. Mr Mahmood takes up the story: “The family was having ice cream and even when it was finished my daughter, who was only a couple of years old at the time was licking the ice cream off my face. She has a great love for ice cream, so I wanted to make something for her. But I didn’t want something that was the norm. I always like to think outside the box” Like Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck, Nitrogelato uses liquid nitrogen to instantly freeze its gelato. This process along with billowing clouds of swirly vapour and special lighting, produces an

exceptional treat, creamy and dense with a remarkable clarity of flavour according to the owners. The liquid nitrogen, is completely safe giving an amazing edge to the ice cream experience. Offering Something Different Mahmood from a young age was always interested in science and art, to the point his ambition was to go on and do a biomedical

science degree. The degree didn't materialise in that particular area, but this love of all things scientific has certainly taken the process of ice cream making to a whole new level. And the success of Nitrogelato is anything but wafer thin. He added: “I wanted to be unique and different. It was really hard to find the Nitrogen, which is probably the reason why no

one is doing it. Even my ice cream is so amazing, you won’t find any ice crystals on the ice cream it's so smooth and creamy, and with the added nitrogen people are really going to enjoy their experience.” The parlour itself makes you feel like you’re actually stepping into a funky laboratory. It’s great for children, or anyone who wants to release their inner child. It's also a real scoop for Asian Sunday.

Everything you need to know about the

New Mclaren Senna Supercar The ultimate road-legal, trackconcentrated McLaren Senna hypercar will make its public debut in March, at the 88th Geneva International Motor Show. Asian Sunday got a sneak peak into McLaren’s most extreme road car yet. The McLaren Senna has been designed, engineered and developed with single-minded purpose: to be the ultimate McLaren trackconcentrated car for the road. Legalised for road use, but not sanitised to suit it, the new Ultimate Series deliberately compromises McLaren’s trademark breadth of supercar daily usability; instead it provides the purest connection between driver and car, to deliver the most intense circuit experience of any road McLaren. The technical recipe is classic McLaren Automotive supercar, a pedigree established and earned in the short time elapsed since the pioneering sports and supercar company was founded in 2010, but

taken to another level entirely in the McLaren Senna. Ultra-lightweight construction, with carbon fibre chassis and body panels. Midmounted, twin-turbocharged V8 McLaren engine. Rear wheel drive. Sophisticated race-derived suspension that delivers an unparalleled blend of control and dynamic balance. Electro-hydraulic steering that rewards accurate inputs and gives the purest feedback. And two seats – but with absolute focus on the importance of the one that the driver occupies. The car bears the name of legendary Formula 1 driver, Ayrton Senna, and weighing in at 1,198kg (2,641lbs) it is also the lightest McLaren road car since the iconic McLaren F1. The vehicle boasts 0 litre twinturbocharger V8, making it the most powerful McLaren road car internal combustion engine ever, with 800PS (789bhp) and 800Nm (590 lb ft) With only 500 units being produced and all hand assembled at the

McLaren production centre in Woking from Q3, 2018, car enthusiasts will no doubt be keen to get their hands on the £750,00 (inclusive of UK taxes) priced Senna. Mike Flewitt, Chief Executive Officer at McLaren Automotive said: “The McLaren Senna is a car like no other: the personification of McLaren’s motorsport DNA, legalised for road use but designed and developed from the outset to excel on a circuit. Every element of this new Ultimate Series McLaren has an uncompromised performance focus, honed to ensure the purest possible connection between driver and machine and deliver the ultimate track driving experience in the way that only a McLaren can.”

The Risk Of Using Work Computers For Personal Matters

The perils of using your work computer for personal matters was recently highlighted in the High Court case of Simpkin v The Berkeley Group Holdings PLC. In that case the Mr Simpkin was the Finance Director of The Berkeley Group. Berkeley terminated Mr Simpkin’s employment, removed him as a Director and decided that he would not be treated as a “good leaver”. As a consequence Mr Simpkin would not receive the benefits of a long term incentive plan and a bonus scheme which were operated by Berkeley. Mr Simpkin therefore pursued proceedings against Berkeley. During Mr Simpkin’s employment with Berkeley he had sent an email from his work email account to his personal email account with an attachment containing an analysis of his expectations under Berkeley’s long-term incentive plan. He had then forwarded the email from his personal account to his solicitor who was dealing with his divorce. Berkeley wanted to use those emails and attachment in the context of its employment dispute with Mr Simpkin but Mr Simpkin argued that those documents could not be used as they were privileged. However, Berkeley contended that Mr Simpkin was not entitled to claim privilege to those documents because when a privileged document came into the hands of an opposing party in litigation there was nothing to prevent that party from using that document. Further, Berkeley argued that the document was not confidential as against it - it was accepted by both parties that confidentiality was a pre-condition to privilege. The Court decided that the document was not confidential because: •Mr Simpkin had signed Berkeley’s IT policy which provided that emails

sent and received on Berkeley’s IT system were the property of Berkeley. •Berkeley’s IT department had full access to all emails sent and received by Mr Simpkin. •The document was created by Mr Simpkin during the course of his employment with Berkeley and by using its IT system. It was therefore impossible for Mr Simpkin to have any reasonable expectation of privacy as regard the preparation of those documents as

he should have been aware that those documents would be stored on Berkeley’s servers. The Judge found that the documents in question were never confidential as against Berekley or, if they were, they lost their confidentiality when they were processed on Berkeley’s IT system. This case highlights the risks for employees who use work IT systems for private communications. It is also a reminder to employers to ensure that their IT Policies are as “water-tight” as possible to avoid complications such as this case highlights both during the employment relationship or after it has ended.

NEWS

December Driving Test Changes Receive Mixed Reaction The driving test is changing to curb the number of accidents suffered by young motorists. But the proposed changes which came into force on 4 December have been met with a mixed reaction from driving instructors and motorists alike. Despite this resentment, the Government hopes to make the practical test more up to date, to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on UK roads. Gearing Up Younger Drivers This is especially aimed at those between the ages of 15 and 19, of whom a quarter of deaths are caused by road collisions. A pilot of the new test has been tried out on more than 4,500 learner drivers, and 850 instructors in 32 locations across Britain. Controversial Manoeuvring It seems one particular manoeuvre is responsible for causing some controversy. This requires the motorists to pull up on the right-hand side of the road, and reverse two car lengths. Many drivers argue this is similar to parallel parking into oncoming traffic. Some are arguing this manoeuvre actually contradicts rule 239 of the

Highway Code; 'do not park facing against the traffic flow'3. More than 2,300 people have signed a petition, started by a driving instructor, calling for the Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to abolish this new manoeuvre, Reversing around a bend is being replaced by drivers being asked to Park in a bay - either driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out. The examiner will decide which you have to do, though it's recommended this should still be taught. Choice For Candidates From the three changes Candidates will be able to choose one of the reversing manoeuvres. Motorists could also be asked to follow instructions from a sat nav device, a Tom Tom Start 52, set up by the examiner. Candidates will be able to ask the examiner for confirmation of where they are going, and it won’t matter if they go the wrong way unless they make a fault while doing it. One in five driving tests won’t use a sat nav, with drivers needing to follow traffic signs instead.

Half of the test, around 20 minutes will consist of having to drive without turn-byturn directions from the driving examiner. The examiner will ask candidates two vehicle safety questions during the driving test, known as the ‘show me, tell me’ questions. An explanation of how to carry out a safety task, for example, constitutes a tell me, while how to carry out a safety task while driving would fit into the show me category. The DVSA Viewpoint Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) chief executive Gareth Llewellyn explained: "Great Britain's roads are among the safest in the world.. But there is scope to do more to keep road users safe – particularly newly-qualified drivers. Making sure the test better assesses a driver's ability to drive safely and independently is part of our strategy to help every driver through a lifetime of safe driving.” Clearing The Confusion Confused.com teamed up with a driving instructor and took to the streets to film him putting some of the new

manoeuvres to the test. The driver savings site is also inviting motorists to have their say on the changes in an online poll, to influence the way learner drivers are taught on our roads. They found Only 17 per cent of motorists agree with pulling up to face oncoming traffic, which seems to contradict the Highway Code3. Introducing driving with a sat nav seems to be the most popular change to the test, with 46 per cent of drivers in agreement. very few drivers are happy about removing the turn in the road or so called ‘three point turn’, with only 16 per cent happy with the change. Two in three people believe driving in darker conditions should also form part of the test. A total of 49 per cent of drivers claim learners would also benefit from getting to grips with improved cyclist awareness. Interestingly, 18 per cent of drivers believe it’s beneficial for learners to be taught about the financial side of owning a car, such as car insurance, petrol, parking, car finance and car maintenance. This is in order to give new motorists a better insight into realistic cost implications, and teach them more affordable ways of running a car.

The Reaction Of Motorists Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com, said:“We hope the new test will help learner drivers to adapt to the modern conditions of our roads, especially through the independent driving and sat nav additions. “Drivers have to put up with seeing poor driving on our roads every day, so their views should be reflected in what learners are taught in order to improve the standard of driving across the UK. We would urge drivers to take part in our poll and have their say. It’s slightly concerning many driving instructors deem one of the new manoeuvres ‘dangerous’, but we must trust that those learners who will be practising these skills early, will develop safe driving habits to last a life time. “Our research showed 73 per cent of drivers believe motorway driving should be tested, and so it’s likely many people will welcome the law change which allows learner drivers to practice on motorways from 2018.”

New Premier League and FA Cash

Triple H To Face Off Against Jinder Mahal During WWE Tour Of India

India to face the Modern Day Maharaja? It's because it's my job now, my place to ensure the future,” Triple H said.

“How I ensure that future is by making sure that our athletes are the best. I push them to the limits and make sure that everyday they learn lessons that make them better than they were the day before. I have taken it upon myself then to make you better, Jinder.”

To Boost Local Sports Groups by MO BHANA

Newly refurbished sports facilities on Laistridge Lane in Bradford are set to play a “key role” in boosting local sports groups thanks to a £500,000 grant from the Premier League and the FA Facilities Fund, which will be delivered by the Football Foundation. The new facility which can be used all-year-round, will benefit a wide range of stake holders including students at Bradford University, community and schools teams who will benefit from West Riding FA coaching sessions. Additionally, West Riding County Amateur League and Bradford Sunday Alliance League fixtures will also move to Laistridge Lane, which will result in a 99 per cent increase in football participation for those over the age of 26 is predicted.

Triple H, real name, Jean Paul Levesque, is adamant he will teach Mahal a lesson that he will never forget.

“The facility is now being used by a variety of local clubs for training and match play, for coaching courses and a wide variety of University sports clubs – the feedback to date has been exceptional.”

“I come there to teach you a lesson that only I can teach. Because when you step into my ring, you are no longer in India. You are no longer in front of just 1.3 billion of your people. You are now in my world, and in my world Jinder. I will see you in New Delhi, Maharaja.”

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “These facilities are more than places to play football at, these facilities are hubs of physical activity, the bedrock of local communities and ‘homes from home’ for so many who also use them as social outlets to learn new skills, gain work experience and other qualifications.”

Mahal — who lost the WWE championship to AJ Styles in Manchester last week — did not look phased as he replied asking for the company to make it happen. Mahal said: “@TripleH not only the biggest match in Indian history, but also of my career. Consider the challenge accepted by me, now @wweindia and #wweuniverse India let‘s all make this happen.”

Zahid Mirza, who is from Manningham area of Bradford believes the upgrades to the newly refurbished sports facilities, will only benefit the local community. “It’s a great idea in my opinion,” said Mirza.

Chris Spargo, Head of Commercial Services at the University, said: “The significant enhancement of the University’s sport facilities has been a key strategic objective for the University for some time.

“This will give people an opportunity to engage with local football teams and also work with the county FA to attain football qualifications.

“The support provided by the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund in terms of finance and professional advice, has enabled the University deliver its objective of high quality state of the art facilities for its students, its staff and the local football community.

“Many people will look forward to watching local teams such as Phoenix JFC and Athletico FC play and it is a great facility for students at Bradford University, who will no doubt also benefit from the refurbished pitch and the new changing rooms and facilities.”

Triple H has warned the 'Modern Day Maharaja' Jinder Mahal he faces the biggest challenge of his career as the pair prepare to go head-to-head in the main event of the WWE Raw Live tour of India which will take place at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi this month. HHH insists the match would be the biggest match in India's history. He said: “I’ll return to New Delhi on December 9 and I will step into that ring to compete. “But, it won’t be against just

anybody. It will be for the biggest match in India’s history. “It will be Modern Day Maharaja Jinder Mahal, the former WWE champion against the Cerebral Assassin.” The Game also mentioned that although he will be competing in front of a hostile crowd – who will be cheering for their 'Maharaja' once Mahal steps into the ring, he will be in serious trouble. “Jinder Mahal! As December 9 approaches, you must ask yourself why am I back? Why am I stepping in that ring, why am I coming to

Moeen Ali Unlikely To Bowl In Ashes Second Test Due To finger Injury by MO BHANA

“It's about being ready for that first ball when it's delivered,” said Ali. The Worcestershire player, on his first Ashes tour down under, says he is ready for the intensity of the rest of the series and any baiting from the Australia players. “Australians like to talk a lot, big themselves up,” he said. “That's part of the game. It's not something that I haven't had before.” “It's something you have to block out. You have to focus on your game and the situation that the team is in. I'm prepared the best I can. When you're out there you rely on your instincts. I know it will be tough, but I've always backed my ability.

With Stokes still at home as he awaits to discover whether he will be charged following his arrest in Bristol, Moeen has been promoted to No 6 in England’s batting order.

“I've had more time to work on my game, sometimes when you're playing you don't get the chance to focus on yourself. Another benefit of not playing those two games is that it makes you hungrier to get out there and be with the guys. I can't wait to put my whites on and start performing.” England’s Moeen Ali suffered a split to the finger during the First Ashes Test in Australia which could rule him out of bowling duties in the Second Test. The Worcestershire all-rounder did not bowl during practice sessions as he gave his right index finger as long as possible to heal. However, even though his finger will not have healed, Moeen is likely to play here as a specialist batsman with captain Joe Root available to bowl some part-time off-spin bowler. An England spokesman said: “Moeen decided himself not to bowl in the nets on Thursday but he is expected to be fit for the Test match.” He was a pivotal player at the first Test at the Gabbatoir - but not through anything he did with bat or ball. Moeen's controversial exit, stumped when he was on 40, sent the tourists tumbling from 155-5 in their second innings to 195 all out. Former England skipper Michael Vaughan and Michael Atherton agreed with TV umpire Chris Gaffaney 's stumping verdict after

he watched many replays. But there was outcry over the extra-thick white line across the crease, with some pundits feeling that was one more reason why Moeen should have been given the benefit of the doubt. England’s Joe Root confirmed Moeen has been given time to recuperate: “The decision was to give Moeen an extra day to rest his finger and make sure it is as ready as it can be and we’ll have another look after practice and see if there’s any more damage to it,” said Root at his pre-Test press conference. “It would be wrong to make a judgment before then. His batting has been a huge part of our team for a long period of time so I think he would still play as a batter if he cannot bowl. It’s definitely not out of the question that Mason Crane will play. We will take everything into consideration.” Meanwhile, Moeen has urged his England team mates to stay "calm" during the second test and not to rise to any perceived hostility from the Aussies.

Moeen has also received the backing of England legend, Ian Botham, who believes the Englishman can step up in Ben Stokes’ absence in the first Test against Australia at the Gabba, according to England legend.

Those of us who have watched plenty of England over the past few years know all about Moeen and his ability to turn a game with bat and ball. “He is a positive cricketer who likes to entertain, but he’s also got plenty of heart and loves a battle, so to see him score 38 at a much slower rate than normal is actually quite encouraging.
