Residents are being asked to play their part in keeping the district safe as Bonfire Night approaches.
do not provide people with an excuse to get rid of a load of rubbish on the cheap.
Bradford Council is working in partnership with the emergency services and the district's largest social landlord, Incommunities, to solve bonfire season problems before they can get out of hand.
"Council Wardens and enforcement officers will be on their guard, looking out for fly-tipping and cracking down on culprits.”
They also want people to help the campaign and report dangerous bonfires which can be dealt with before they cause problems. Businesses, homes and schools are being advised to remove accumulations of rubbish before they can be set on fire. Traders and householders are also being urged not to take advantage of the season by transporting and illegally dumping waste on bonfires. Coun Sarah Ferriby Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: "Bonfire celebrations

responsibly.
“Incommunities will be checking on bonfires which might have been built on land that it owns to ensure they are safe. Unsafe bonfires or bonfires built on land regularly maintained by Incommunities will be removed. “We would urge people, particularly those with young children, to go to properly
organised displays but if customers or residents living in the neighbourhoods would like safety advice we are happy to provide this if they contact us on 01274 257990.” If residents feel that any bonfire is unsafe or if they witness flytipping they can report it to the Council on 01274 431000. Please note down as many details as possible.
"We hope people will enjoy their bonfire celebrations but we urge everyone to behave responsibly.” Fly-tippers can be given a £400 Fixed Penalty Notice or be taken to court where offenders will face unlimited fines and a prison term of up to five years. Harry Whittle, Director of Incommunities – Building Services, said “We want everyone to enjoy their bonfire celebrations in safety and we would urge everyone to act
Woman fined £320 for fly tipping and then setting fire to rubbish A woman who dumped rubbish on the side of a residential street, then set fire to it, has been fined £320 by Bradford magistrates. Safina Bi, 60, of Whetley Hill, Bradford, was caught on CCTV cameras dumping the rubbish on two separate occasions from a car in Manningham. On the second occasion, she was seen to set fire to the domestic waste before leaving the scene. She pleaded guilty to two offences, one of illegally disposing of controlled waste and one of disposing of waste in a manner likely to cause pollution or harm to public health. Ms Bi was ordered to pay £475 costs and £32 Victim Surcharge. Following the case, Coun Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “It’s hard to understand why anyone would behave in this way. There was a Household Waste Recycling Centre within less than ten minutes drive away from this area where all this rubbish could have been disposed of quickly and without charge. “We really have to try and make people realise that fly-tipping is not an option
when it comes to getting rid of rubbish. It is illegal, anti-social, selfish and, in this particular case, totally illogical.”

NEWS Residents in Bristol are Tying Hot Water Bottles To Trees To Keep Homeless People Warm This Winter. Could it also work in Bradford?
Summer has well and truly ended and the autumn chill has now kicked in.
Kind community members in Cardiff have started collecting hot water bottles donated by members of the public and are tying them to trees for homeless people to use. Each bottle comes with a note detailing local businesses that have agreed to provide hot water, plus directions explaining how to reach them. The grassroots project, called The Hot Water Bottle Network, currently operates in Bristol, Bath, Leicester and Brighton, and each city has its own Facebook page detailing donation points. As well as the notes on the bottles, participating business windows will also display information about the project to help spread the word. The Hot Water Bottle Network is keen to expand its efforts to more cities. If you’re a member of the public or business owner willing to help, you can get in touch with Pete via the Hot Water Bottle Network Bristol Facebook page.
Fairy Liquid bottle from 50 years ago highlights how long plastic waste lasts
Brean beach warden Dave Furber told national media: ‘The wording on the bottle has been weathered but you can still clearly read that it says ‘4d off’ on the front so it must date back to before decimalisation which was in 1971. ‘That makes the bottle over 47 years old which is remarkable. It shows how plastics are so slow to decay.’ Less than a third (31%) of plastic waste is recycled in the UK, according to a WWF report – with consumers predicted to throw away 9% more plastic bottles by the end of this decade. Are you doing your bit for the environment? Households in Bradford can recycle their waste by ordering grey recycling bins from the council free of charge (more details here: https://www.bradford.gov.uk/ recycling-and-waste/wheeled-bins-andrecycling-containers/get-new-wheeled-binsor-recycling-containers/) The bins can take paper, plastic, glass and cans.
Coastguards in Somerset found a Fairy Liquid bottle from almost 50 years ago – priced 4p – highlighting just how long plastic lasts in the ocean. The bottle was found at Brean Beach in Somerset, and dates back to 1971, but is still clearly legible.
However, residents are urged not to include household waste in recycling bins, as contaminated recycling comes at a huge cost to the council. A report issued last month identified that in Bradford, 3,095 enforcement notices for contamination of recycling bins have been issued and 515 in Keighley. So the message is recycle responsibly.

Two Years on: Police complaint continues as family of 11 year old school boy continue to deal with life after his death Tragedy hit parents Asif and Fareena Khan in September 2016 when Asad Khan was discovered lifeless in his room. The bright youngster was found by his mother after she forced her way into his room in Tile Street, Manningham, just weeks after he started secondary school in 2016. An inquest which was launched to investigate Asad’s death, concluded that circumstances around the Beckfoot Upper Heaton student was ‘unclear’ and coroner Martin Fleming could not say if Asad had ben bullied as he believed there was no evidence to support this. Asad’s family however, believe otherwise and had walked out of the inquest disappointed when the coroner refused to hear, what they believed was ‘vital’ evidence to the investigation. The family never accepted the verdict recorded by coroner Martin Fleming, saying they felt they had been “put on trial rather than be treated with any respect as bereaved parents”. The family continue to find it hard to be at peace or gain closure surrounding their son’s untimely death. The family have since made a complaint about police conduct to the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct), which is ongoing. During the inquest procedures the family had insisted, that their son had spoken to the school student manager, Jane Berry, whose job it is to deal with bullying in the school. Ms Berry however, failed to recall any such conversation took place. The family police liaison officer however, had informed the family during a discussion at their new family home that there was CCTV showing Asad speaking to Ms Berry. The liaison officer later denied offering this information, but the family
challenged this by complaining to the IOPC who have now acknowledged in a letter to the family that the liaison officer did in fact give them information that she later denied. Ruth Bundey, who represented the family during the inquest has been dealing with the IOPC complaint. She told Asian Sunday: “So far, the IOPC accept that the family’s liaison officer did give them information that she subsequently denied she gave, thereby misleading the Coroner which meant that further crucial investigation did not take place. The further investigation
by professional standards was again inadequate and now the subject of a further appeal.” The IOPC acknowledging the Police liaison officer’s fault is not going to bring my son back, but the grieving process has been made a lot more difficult due to how my family and I have been treated throughout this investigation. Asif Khan - Father of Asad Khan
The family want to be able to move on with their lives, but feel it’s difficult to do so, with so many vital pieces of evidence still not presented which they feel will help piece together why Asad’s life ended so soon. Father Asif Khan said: “I feel completely
let down by the whole process and am disappointed at the way our son’s inquest was handled. The IOPC acknowledging the Police liaison officer’s fault is not going to bring my son back, but the grieving process has been made a lot more difficult due to how my family and I have been treated throughout this investigation. I don’t know if my family and I will ever get the answers we need, and this makes it ever more difficult to gain closure. "Please keeps my family and I in your prayers and thoughts”

COVER STORY
Feud over ‘haram’ cake at Bradford Restaurant
Chocolate Gateux cake served to Muslim customers contained beef gelatine & brandy by GRAHAME ANDERSON Award winning Mumtaz restaurant on Bradford's famous Great Horton Road (not connected to Mumtaz Restaurant Leeds) has broken religious guidelines by selling a cake containing ingredients not classed as halal food. The Deluxe chocolate gateau was purchased for the celebration of Eid by local customer Kanwal Hussain in the summer. The Back Story She told Asian Sunday: “The cake was purchased on the 15th of June for Eid because my mum loves that particular gateaux so much. She lives over in Keighley and I decided to drive while my husband sat in the passenger seat with the boxed cake on his lap. It was then he noticed the list of ingredients on the side of the
packaging, clearly saying there was alcohol and beef gelatine in the mixture. This of course goes completely against religious guidelines for Muslims and we were appalled, as it obviously wasn't halal. “I got straight back to the restaurant to tell them, and they asked if I could bring it back and they'd be happy to give me a refund for the £30 cake. They said the cake had been a wrong delivery and wasn't the normal one they get from their usual, Destiny Foods in Manchester. They would investigate the matter further. “I heard nothing back so emailed them three days later with a full complaint, but despite chasing things up I received no apology or reply. I have been eating this cake for years, and so have my friends and family members. I am very disgusted to learn that being a Muslim company, they
have been serving this cake which contains alcohol and beef gelatine, to Muslim customers. I am also shocked at the lack of a complaints process for such a large restaurant.” Supplier Clear on Deliveries Destiny Foods confirmed to
Kanwal this was the same cake containing both alcohol and beef gelatine they'd been delivering to the restaurant previously. A spokesperson also confirmed no separate cakes are made especially for Mumtaz which do not have those ingredients in the mixture. It was not a wrong delivery.

COVER STORY Important Labelling Kanwal photographed that list of ingredients on the box to confirm the cake wasn't suitable for the following: • Halal • Vegetarians • Vegans • Coeliac • Kosher Product specifications provided by Destiny Foods clearly confirm the presence of beef gelatine, whole milk, egg, gluten, brandy syrup, Lecithin E322, lactose, sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa mass powder, natural vanilla and white and dark chocolate decoration. The Heart of The Matter Asian Sunday contacted the restaurant with customers in mind to ask if their products were labelled. We were told they weren't. When asked if everything on their extensive menu was halal, a spokesperson said: “We don't use anything else”. While the supplier clearly labels the ingredients on their products supplied to the restaurant, there's no such indication of labelling at Mumtaz Bradford. We have also learned from The Halal Food Authority there's no binding law to say the restaurant must inform a customer their cake is or isn't halal, though some restaurants can get certification for foodstuffs. But it's not compulsory. In terms of religious rules however, the faith says a Muslim should inform another Muslim if the item offered is halal whether it's permissible for consumption or not. Looking for Answers We went back to the restaurant to ask why they had not replied to the customer on two separate occasions only to be told the management weren't available. We were also told however, 'if the customer has had a refund – what more do they want'. Following several more attempts to get a clear answer from the restaurant, a spokesperson for Mumtaz requested more time to resolve the matter with the customer, promising to offer us a statement in return. Two weeks later Kanwal was offered £150 in vouchers to withdraw the story from Asian Sunday. Kanwal added: “Not only is this too little too late, it also feels like a bribe simply to retract my story. It's the principle that counts and I don't feel like a valued customer. I've lost trust in the restaurant and just don't feel like eating there anymore. “It makes you wonder if anything else on the menu isn't strictly halal, and it's such a shame because I've enjoyed going there for years now. I could have got a halal cake at
any two or three other places but went back to Mumtaz out of loyalty. They don't serve alcohol on their premises as the owners are Muslim, so you naturally assume the product is 100 per cent halal.” Newspaper Appeal Following an appeal from the Mumtaz management asking Asian Sunday's Editor Fatima Patel not to print the story, a meeting was arranged involving all parties. A spokesperson for the restaurant acknowledged to Kanwal errors had been made. They were thankful to Kanwal as had she not told them, they may have ‘unknowingly’ continued to serve the cakes containing beef and brandy. Mumtaz Bradford maintained throughout they had no knowledge of the contents of the cake. They said in the meeting that there had been a supplier change, and it may be the supplier who changed the recipe. Kanwal reminded everyone the cake box had ingredients clearly printed on the side. How come after all these years
not one person had noticed? The spokesperson said it was a training issue and as a result of the complaint, they will be offering training to staff alongside a proper menu inspection. They wanted to put things right and assured Kanwal that the cake has been taken off the menu and a full inspection had taken place on all their products. Compensation As a loyal customer Kanwal felt wronged and argued that she be compensated for all the ‘haram’ cakes she and her family consumed till date. On calculation this figure would come to around £4000. Initially the Mumtaz Bradford spokesperson accused Kanwal of being greedy however, following negotiations, it was finally agreed that Kanwal accept a compensation figure of £300 and not tell her story providing Mumtaz Bradford an opportunity to ‘put things right’ internally. Kanwal agreed and was promised a call back within an hour to confirm if Mumtaz Bradford management
had also accepted. Kanwal however received no call that day or the following day and no compensation was paid. Kanwal said: “I am extremely shocked at the behavior of the restaurant. Not only have they done wrong, they then try to make me believe I am wrong for complaining. The stress I have undergone these last three months is taking its toll on me. I simply wanted the restaurant to value my 12 years loyalty as a regular customer and to put right what they did wrong. As a Muslim I don’t want to live with the knowledge that other Muslims could be consuming ‘haram’ cake like I did. I wanted their (Mumtaz Bradford) assurance that they have taken the cake off the shelf. I would never have known this or even had the meeting about my complaint had it not been for the media. I am truly disappointed “ Despite requests no statement has been issued by Mumtaz Braford on the matter
Things to Remember Customers do have a right to challenge food providers on the ingredients used in their food, or if they are not happy with the product provided under consumer rights act 2015. They can also ask to see available certification should it be available. • The Foods Standards Agency says allergenic ingredients must be indicated in a list of ingredients with clear reference to the substance or product. • According to Gov.uk you don’t have to show particular information on the label for every kind of product, but if you include it you must be accurate. • Law on The Web, The UK's legal information website advises When eating at a restaurant, you are entitled to the same rights as with any other goods and services, including the requirement that the food should be “as described” and “of reasonable quality”. Obviously, it must also be safe to eat. An example of a meal not being “as described” might be if it did not include some of the ingredients you expected or were promised •

putting a spotlight on your elected council representatives to find out what they have been doing and campaigning on your behalf.
Due to popular demand the Asian Sunday Accountable Councillors is back, renamed 'Out & About!
Every month we will be out and about in different areas of the city and we will be speaking to local residents, community organisations, businesses and your local Councillors to find out what it is like to live in your ward.
This edition we visit the Heaton ward which includes the village of Frizinghall, Heaton and Daisy Hill. Heaton has a total population of 17,587 people according to the Census in 2010. And more than 25 per cent of the population describe their ethnicity as Pakistani.
We will be highlighting your concerns and
rOLE OF COUNCILLOrS The duties of a local councillor can be defined as to: direct and control the affairs of the local authority; take key policy decisions defining the objectives of the Council and allocating the resources required to attain them and keep under review the progress and performance of local services (social care, education, housing and so forth). Councillors are also known as Elected Members. There are 90 councillors on the Council – three for every Council ‘ward’ (an area of the district).
These councillors are members of the public who put themselves forward for the role and are elected by the people who live in the area they represent. Councillors are paid an allowance, but are not employed by the Council. They can also claim for out-ofpocket expenses, such as travel, incurred in the course of their duties. Councillors may belong to a political party, or they may stand as an independent. Those who belong to a political party form ‘groups’ on the Council.

PARINEETI CHOPRA: "I have the most secure, comfortable and inhibited relationship with Arjun Kapoor"
If you’ve been following her on social media, you will see the actress has been very busy with the promotions of her upcoming film Namaste England, which also stars Arjun Kapoor. Chopra is leaving no stones unturned to make sure that audiences know about her upcoming movie. Riding high from the success of Golmaal Again and with many other interesting projects in her kitty, Parineeti has every reason to smile. Asian Style spoke candidly with the Ishaqzaade star on her latest film and her fun co-star Arjun Kapoor. Parineeti, your last project Golmaal Again was
one of the highest-grossing films of 2017. Did this success help you in gaining current and future projects? Yes. I had never explored big commercial projects before Golmaal. The success of that gave me the confidence and Namaste England is an extension of that decision. I’m very happy because these are the type of films which I enjoy doing the most. I also enjoy watch this style of cinema, so I’m very happy. You are working with Arjun Kapoor after a hiatus of 6 years what changes do you see
in him (if any) as a co-star and as an actor? Arjun and I, as everyone knows, that we did Ishaqzaade together. That was the time when nobody knew him. But today when I work him, he’s a big star now everybody knows him and when we’re shooting people are screaming out his name. I almost feel like a proud mother even though I had no hands in the success of his career. But obviously because he’s such a close friend and I love him to bits, I feel so happy that he is doing well in life and doing such good films.

Will the representations of Punjabis be as flamboyant and caricature to what we have seen in the past? Not at all, that’s just not Vipul sir’s style. He makes larger-than-life and aspirational films, but he never makes them caricature. They are always real. There were situations in the film where we were aware about us being filmy, but when you watch the film, you won’t feel like “Oh, that typical Punjabi world”. I don’t think I would’ve been able to do it. As Namaste England’s tagline suggests, “London Jaana Hai Legal Illegal Sab Chalega.” Also, Immigration is a highly sensitive and serious subject in Britain. Does your role focus on the plight of female immigrants? My role and also of Arjun’s is about two
people who are in love. Absolutely in love - and will go through different journeys and to any lengths to be together. The ‘legal illegal’ is a part of our story, but I don’t want to say too much because that would really ruin the experience for you, but to answer the question in one word, it is No. So it is more focused on love? It focuses on the story of the characters Jasmeet and Param, is all I’m going to say. Let’s talk about your career. Your journey in films has seen some successes and some low phases, how do you manage to keep yourself motivate through the struggles and keep challenging yourself to do better? I really want to keep doing better and that’s what I keep focusing on. When I had 2/3 films that did not do well.

BEAUTY
Seven Hair Dye Myths – Debunked From the damage it causes to your hair, to the correct aftercare and treatment, some of the most common hair dye myths have been debunked to help people better understand how to use dyes and upkeep coloured hair. The hair and beauty buffs at Hairtrade.com have looked into the seven most widely acknowledged myths surrounding hair dye and colourant in order to discredit the nonsense and set the record straight. Dye has long been thought to contain dangerous chemicals and thus pose an extreme risk to pregnant women, but it’s now understood that there is little-to-no evidence which shows that dying your hair whilst pregnant could harm your unborn baby. Hair colourant has also been believed to severely damage hair strands after extensive use, stripping away hair density and damaging the root – but this too is in fact highly inaccurate. The product deposit on your hair strands can actually give the appearance of a thicker hair shaft, therefore creating the illusion of denser hair. A spokesperson for Hairtrade.com commented: “Your hair style and colour can tell a lot about your personality, so going for a chop or changing your hair shade can be a really nerve-wracking experience. “This shouldn’t be added to by thinking that using a hair dye is going to create irreparable damage and that your hair will never be able to look the same again, so we’ve looked into the most widely acknowledged anecdotes surrounding dye and colourant to dispel the myths and set the record straight.”
1.Colouring strips away hair density
or a gloss formula can actually condition your locks and be quite good for it.
On the contrary, the product deposit on your hair gives the appearance of a thicker hair shaft and there an illusion of denser hair. Bleaching, however, does reduce your hair volume so give it a miss if you have fine hair.
3.Pregnant women shouldn’t dye their hair
2.Colouring your hair will automatically damage it Dying your hair can damage it a little in the sense that it opens up the hair cuticle to allow the colour to deposit. However, this is nothing that can’t be reversed. Professional or home remedy style oil massages, hair spas and damage repairing treatments can restore your hair to its original condition. Semi-permanent colour
As only a tiny amount of hair dye is absorbed by the skin when applying it to your head, hair dyes are actually perfectly safe to use when pregnant. However, semi-permanent dyes and highlights might make better sense for pregnant women, as the ammonia in permanent dyes can trigger nausea. 4.You should wash your hair before colouring it Hair colour contains chemicals so it’s actually wiser to dye hair that has been washed around 24-48 hours before, instead of right before you apply the dye. The natural oils that build up in the scalp

will help to protect it from the chemicals in the dye. However, your hair also needs to be free of any built-up product so try not to use anything in your hair on the lead up to dying it. 5.You should shampoo your hair straight after colouring it You need to allow the colour some time to sink into your cuticle, so you should shampoo your locks only 24-48 hours post colour to make it last longer. This way, you can avoid more frequent touch ups. 6.If you colour your hair once, you have to keep colouring it Dying your hair once doesn’t mean your hair can never return to its natural colour again – so recolouring your hair is entirely your choice. Bleaching can cause a slight loss in hair pigment which may lead to premature greying, but besides this, if you use good quality hair colours, you won’t be dependent on them for your entire life. So, feel free to experiment with different colours! 7.You shouldn’t straighten or curl coloured hair You can straighten and curl coloured hair to your heart’s content – just make sure you apply a heat protectant produce beforehand.

FEATURE
Should you hide negative emotions from children?
by JOHN LAMBIE
Reader in Psychology, Anglia Ruskin University
From crying in the toilet to leaving the house in a rage, many parents and carers don’t want their children to see them getting emotional. But is this the right thing to do, or should you come clean about your fear of spiders or how angry you are with your boss? While the topic is complex, some clear answers are beginning to emerge from the research. Many parents worry that showing negative emotions in front of their children will cause them to suffer. For instance, children may end up thinking it’s their fault or simply “catch” the emotion. Indeed, this latter worry has a sound basis – the phenomenon of “emotional contagion” is real, and one recent study found that parents can transfer their fear of going to the dentist, for example, to their children. On the other hand, there is the intuitive idea that we should “be real” with our children, and that they will benefit from watching a parent who struggles and eventually copes with their negative emotions like any other human being. If your child sees you doing that, then shouldn’t this help them to learn to cope with their own emotions? The danger of suppression There are three concepts to consider when it comes to emotional display in front of children: suppression, “uncontained” expression, and talking about emotions. Suppression of emotion is when you hide the outward signs of an emotion. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work very well – the act of suppressing your emotion actually increases your blood pressure and physiological arousal. Observers can pick up on your distress despite your efforts to hide it, making them feel stressed, too. Recent research has also found that when parents feel negative emotions (like anger or resentment) and withhold them from their children, they
experience lower relationship quality and diminished responsiveness to their child’s needs. In fact, even babies are very tuned in to the dynamics of their parent’s interaction with them. If you dampen down these natural dynamics, babies can find it upsetting. This is dramatically illustrated in the famous “still face” experiments, in which the parent holds a flat, unresponsive expression for a brief period of time. This is a reliable stress inducer, even for very young infants – they are clearly uncomfortable with an unexpressive parent and usually make attempts to get the parent to interact with them. On the other hand, “uncontained” expression of anger and sadness by the parent is also not helpful for the child. Uncontained means high intensity emotion, with no attempts to regulate or take ownership of it. Shouting, smashing things and blaming someone else “for making you angry” are all examples of this. In the case of a fear of the dentist, uncontained emotion would mean acting as though dental practices really are dangerous places, rather than saying “I know I have a fear and I am trying to cope with it” Middle ground So, if at one extreme suppression is
bad, and at the other uncontained expression is also bad, what is the middle ground? That would be talking about emotions, taking ownership of them and showing your child that you are trying to cope with them. Classic research found that sixyear-olds had better emotional understanding and perspective taking skills if their mothers had talked to them about their emotions at the age of three. In fact, the more the mothers had talked, the better the outcome. In another study, mothers kept a diary of the emotional expressions they had shown their preschoolers, including details about how they coped with and explained these. The children of mothers who expressed more sadness and tension had higher emotional knowledge, as assessed by their teachers. And in cases where mothers explained the reasons behind their sadness to their child, the child’s prosocial behaviour was found to be higher. This is most likely also the case for fathers, it is just that research on parenting has historically been carried out on mothers. But how can you actually achieve a balanced approach at home? Consider the following three options. • You are very sad and you have to leave the room to cry.
• Your child senses something is
wrong but doesn’t know what it is.
You are so sad and you can’t stop crying in front of your child. You are very sad and have a little cry, and tell your child that you are very tired and have had a bad day – and that it’s got nothing to do with them. You explain that you are going to sit down and relax and talk to your friend on the phone, and soon you will feel better. Only the third scenario affords an opportunity for the child to learn about emotions and how to cope with them. Researchers refer to this as the parent acting as an “emotional coach”. In this style of parenting, negative emotions are viewed as an opportunity for children to learn how to solve problems. Clearly, parents shouldn’t hide emotions or completely unleash them without limits. Instead, they should openly talk about their emotions to their child, especially about the causes of their emotions and how they are trying to deal with them. So the next time you feel sad, angry or frustrated and your child is watching you expressing emotion, do explain what’s going on in terms they can understand. You could be doing them a favour. It could also be good for you – children are wonderfully compassionate and will often offer some advice that will most likely put a smile on your face.

FOOD REVIEW
SHIMLA SPICE: The spice is Right!
by FATIMA PATEL
signature Shimla Spice Desi Dishes you are spoilt for choice.
Shimla Spice
We asked the waiter to tell us what their most popular dish was and chose to go for that. Our order was a Shimla Spice sizzling mix grill starter for two and the Shimla Spice Desi Chicken Karahi.
69 Otley Road Shipley Bradford BD18 2BJ (01274 599 800). Taste: 4/5 Ambience: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Value for Money: 4/5 As a foodie, more particularly a curry connoisseur, living in Bradford you are often spoilt for choice with the plethora of popular and bustling curry houses in the curry capital. Most of the popular curry establishments are in the BD7 and BD3 areas of Bradford, so gems like Shimla Spice who are based in Shipley (and also have branches in Keighley and Burnley) are often over looked. Shimla Spice is not to be mistaken with the Shimlas restaurant on Great Horton Road, they are both great eateries, but both are very different and not connected in any way with each other. I first heard about Shimla Spice when a news story came in about them winning the Best Restaurant in England Award. At the time I thought to myself, how can they be the best restaurant, when I personally haven’t heard much being said about their food - I hadn’t heard any raving reviews, but then again, I hadn’t heard any bad reviews either. So, following a meeting with the owners last year during the Bradford curry awards, I promised myself I would ensure I paid a visit and almost six months on, I managed to drag myself and my father, who enjoys food as much as I do to the award-winning branch in Shipley. On arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome and asked to be seated in what can only be described as a room of fame. The
number of awards and accolades this restaurant has gathered is commendable.
The sizzling mix grill arrived sizzling. It was indeed a delightful mix of grills from seekh kebabs to meat chops, fish masala and chicken boti. The grill was flavoursome, tasted fresh and the onion base was delicious.
For a Tuesday night the restaurant was busy which also seemed like a good sign.
The fish pieces were also a decent size. You could tell that only quality meats and chicken was used to make this dish.
It wasn’t long before our waiter came and took us to our table. He was friendly, polite and very respectful. Within minutes a plate of pappodoms and condiments arrived for us to enjoy.
My father enjoyed the starters so much, he was struggling to find room for the mains.
I was highly impressed with the table layout, as I noticed two sets of cutlery, which if you dine out at curry houses in Bradford you would be lucky to find. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, with every guest immersed in their conversations, with a nice distance apart from other tables/diners. My pappodoms were nice and crisp, but the condiments were even better. I am a big fan of mint sauce. Shimla Spice really lived up to their ‘Spice’ name as their mint sauce wasn’t just yoghurt and garden mint, but unique blend of herbs and spices which you can tell from the flavours, the colour and texture that spicing for this was a rich blend of decent masala that was then mixed with the yoghurt to give the beautiful original taste. So, if the spicing in the condiment was this good, how will the mains be? The menu at Shimla Spice, is quite extensive, with all your traditional Bhuna’s, Jalfrezi’s and Rogan Josh’s. However, add to that the unique selection from the Lahori choices, to the Mirpuri choices and the signature
Our waiter continued to be attentive while we tucked into our starters, ensuring we have enough space between starter and main course. He was ensuring with each taste of the food presented, we were satisfied not just with the presentation, but also with the flavours. No wonder they’ve won so many awards.
Now on to mains. Normally after such a great starter, it’s hard for the main course to beat it. Our waiter brought over our well-presented dish with the giant naan on a stand. This is just a personal thing, but I prefer my naans on a plate, than to tear off a big stand. Having said that, because the naan was so warm, soft and melt in your mouth, it didn’t take long for me to forgive them for bringing my naan on a stand rather than on a plate. Normally, when I order curry I always go for the lamb option as it’s a family favourite and as I was dining with my father for those who know him, will know he is a very critical eater. He will not shy away from saying he didn’t enjoy his food. So, for me going with the waiter’s recommendation was a big risk. Now for the moment of truth, I had to thank the waiter immensely for his dish selection as it proved to be a massive hit with my father, it even led him to take his phone out to show his friend on a video call. The chicken came in nice small cubed pieces, tenderly cooked, with delicious coating of the rich Shimla Spice desi touch. The spices were strong but not over powering, enough for you to keep going back for more. The naan complimented the dish beautifully and it was one deliciously satisfying dish. We were extremely full that we knew we couldn’t take on any desserts, although the dessert menu wasn’t extremely appealing compared to other places, I was informed that a new range of desserts is being launched soon. Price wise the food was worth paying that little more compared to some of the restaurants in inner city Bradford. After all good service and quality doesn’t come cheap. For me, Shimla Spice is deserving of being a multi award winning chain and I for sure will be going back for seconds.

Everything you need to know about Google’s new Pixel 3 and 3XL and smart home products. Google finally unveiled its latest range of Pixel and smart home products. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL come as no surprise as much of the details for both were extensively leaked in the run-up to launch. We also take a look at the Pixel Slate tablet and Google Home Hub, which was also launched by Google.
The Google Home Hub The Google Home Hub joins the Google Max, Home and Mini and is a direct competitor to Amazon's Alexa Show. At first glance the Home hub looks like a tablet, but the Home Hub isn't designed to be touched – it's designed to be talked to. Despite a 7-inch touchscreen, most of your interactions with it is through the in-built microphone, which is powered by Google Assistant. The Home Hub's default screen shows basic information such as calendar events and traffic updates. During the Hubs inactive period, providing you’ve given permission it will show images you have stored on Google Photos. There's no web browser but the Home Hub's basic interface can be used to control other smart home products such as connected lightbulbs or thermostats. As with Google Assistant on your phone, you can use voice commands to play music, set timers and perform other basic tasks. The Home Hub costs £139 and is available in four colours; blue, yellow-ish, white and grey-ish. It's available to pre-order now and will be available from October 22
Google Pixel Slate
After three years Google brings out its first own-brand tablet – the Pixel Slate. The Slate runs Chrome OS, is Intel-powered, comes with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM and a 3,000 x 2,000 pixel display. There are also USB-C ports on either side of the device, along with cameras on the front and back. The Android Camera app is also compatible with the Pixel Slate, which should make tablet photography slightly less terrible. The Pixel Slate is compatible with the cover and stylus pen. Google hasn’t announced when the Pixel Slate would be available, nevertheless, you can sign up to be notified by email when it goes on sale. The Pixel Slate costs £549, with the Slate Keyboard an extra £189 and the Pixelbook Pen an extra £99.
Google Pixel Slate
Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL The Pixel 3 XL is the largest phone Google has ever made, with a 6.3-inch display and weighing in at 184 grams. The regular Pixel 3 has a 5.5-inch screen and weighs 148g. The biggest visual change to the XL is the addition of a notch. Google's notch is one of the chunkiest around, but the firm says adding it to the phone has helped it to create a larger edgeto-edge screen that takes up 82 per cent of the front of the device.
Pixel 3 & Pixel 3 XL
Google Home Hub
The upgrades to this year's phones are largely focussing on the camera. Both devices have a 12.2MP single camera on the rear and on the front there are two cameras. The front cameras are both 8MP but one is a wide-angle lens. Google says this wider lens will make group selfies easier
to take. Google has also added a number of new camera features, including a new low-light mode. Both phones are being made available for pre-order now and will be available in November. The Pixel 3 starts at £739 (64GB) and the Pixel 3 XL starts from £869 (64GB). Both phones come with 128GB of storage.

FINANCIAL MATTERS
SHABAB GULFRAZ Shabab Gulfraz is our resident Finance expert.
It is widely accepted that the rise in internet banking has significantly increased the rise in banking fraud committed in the UK. This is to the extent that fraud is costing £1 million a day, and in reality the banks are not paying back those customers that have been succumbed to fraud. In the coming weeks the industry watchdogs are going to spell out step bank must take in order to ensure their customers are safeguarded by tackling some of the steps taken by fraudsters. It has recently been highlighted by Gareth Shaw, of Which? he said: ‘It’s two years since we highlighted a real lack of protection for people targeted through no fault of their own – but people are still losing lifechanging sums of money every day and action from the banks has been woefully insufficient. Now I have previously written articles highlighting that this is a major issue that financial institutions need to take seriously. This is especially the case since many of the high street names are shutting branches, and effectively forcing more and more people to undertake internet or phone banking. Most worryingly in my opinion
a recent leaked letter showed that the banks are trying to persuade regulators that they should not have to reimburse those people that did not act reasonably. It was said that it is not right that banks should be responsible for data breaches elsewhere, when it might not be their fault. Now in my view and actually in terms of my own day to day banking I keep sufficient cash to pay bills within my bank accounts and move money out of current accounts regularly to ensure there is not a high balance within the account. I keep other savings in book based banks. This might sound strange, but the reason why I do this is because I personally think the internet is a very dangerous place, and someone can easily find my details on the internet sufficient to warrant them to answer most security questions that are required to access a range of services. I would encourage you all to undertake a quick google check on you and see how much information you find about you. In my view a bank account not linked to the internet telling me exactly how much I have in my account is way better than an account where I can get online access. This means that if fraud ever exists, then the onus
would be less on me, as I have an account without internet access, so technically how can I be wrong, and surely, if I transact at the bank counter only via the old cheque or drawing cash method, then fraud is much harder as in most cases ID is required. Now in terms of fraud my opinion is as follows: •Never answer the phone or give any information about you to someone who calls you on the telephone, even if it is your bank, and always hang up. I always go into the branch, and yes it might mean a higher cost to the bank for someone to see me, but I would rather not deal with someone on the phone. •Do not divulge any information to anyone about your accounts, and nor have easy passwords or use the same passwords for everything. •Never respond to any texts or emails from your bank or other financial institution. •Be careful using bank cards when paying for items on the internet. The above article might sound radical, but someone who has worked in financial services for over 15 years and has seen fraud and how it has affected some people makes more cynical and I guess more aware that it could happen to me.
Shabab is an experienced financial adviser and a business development consultant with a passion for working with businesses who are both ambitious, and responsive to changing market trends whilst specifically focusing on the needs of both new and existing clients. FINANCIAL MATTERS
Piercing The Veil
The “corporate veil” is the principle by which, under normal circumstances, the liabilities of a limited company cannot be pursued against directors or shareholders, who are not personally liable for actions conducted within the normal course of their roles. There have been numerous attempts to “pierce the corporate veil”, often when the limited company in question is insolvent, leaving creditors unable to recover their debts but allowing directors and shareholders to walk away unscathed despite their possible responsibility for the company’s collapse.
directly on the basis that the company was purely a legal vehicle for his business, there was no real distinction between the man and the limited company and the director had funded the litigation and would be the chief beneficiary had it succeeded. On the face of it, this appears to be a relatively extreme case where a dissolved company is brought “back from the dead” so that (on Cole’s case) a sole director could use it as a means to pursue an unsuccessful claim for longdisputed invoices.
would have to be found, whether improper conduct or that the claim was not truly for the benefit of the company (even if the company was a very thin shell around the single director).
When threatened with a claim brought by a company that will never be able to satisfy a Costs Order, is there any other remedy? At an early stage, it may be worth the Defendant applying for an Order for security for costs. This order – available to Defendants faced by certain classes of Claimants, including companies – would require the Claimant to pay funds into court to be used to satisfy any However, in keeping with the subsequent Costs Order or else to courts’ general reluctance to pierce the corporate veil the Judge abandon the claim. However, courts can be reluctant to make such In the case of Housemaker refused to expose the company Services Limited v Cole, the director to any personal liability in Orders and one reason for refusal High Court investigated the respect of the claim for costs. The can be that the inability of the Claimant to make such a payment extent of the veil. The Claimant Judge decided that in order for company was a building firm such a liability to be ordered, some should not be a bar to the Claimant’s that had been dissolved additional component of bad faith right to seek justice. following a failure to file accounts and was reinstated 20 months later to pursue a claim against a client who was in dispute regarding the quality of building works. The company had a single director and the early work was conducted between Cole and the director as a sole trader before the company was incorporated and raised the later unpaid invoices. The initial matter before the Court was an application by the Claimant to allow a claim to be made outside the usual limitation period by disallowing the 608 days during which the company was dissolved. The Court dismissed that application and ordered the company to pay the Defendant’s costs which of course was of little value to Cole given the company’s financial position. Cole therefore applied to the Court to join the director as a second Claimant and to enforce the Costs Order against him

World’s biggest cyclists to descend in Bradford as 2019 UCI World Road Championships comes to the city World’s biggest cyclists to descend in Bradford as 2019 UCI World Road Championships comes to the city.
Some of the world's best cyclists will descend on Yorkshire next year when the region hosts the 2019 UCI Road Cycling World Championships. The Championships will include men’s and women’s races starting in different towns and cities throughout Yorkshire and each finishing in the main competition town of Harrogate The UCI revealed that Bradford will be the start location for the Women's Elite Road Race. You can see the Bradford Harrogate route in image opposite. The UCI said: "The Women's elite peloton will leave Bradford and head north into the Yorkshire Dales, before they begin the route south to the finish in the spa town of Harrogate where they will do 3 laps of the Harrogate circuit. "Bradford truly has something for everyone. "The city is also rich in culture and in 2009 it became the world’s first UNESCO City of Film. A thriving
food scene only adds to its allround credentials and it will prove the perfect start location for the Women’s Elite Road Race." Coun Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s, Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “It is so exciting that the 2019 UCI World Road Championships are coming to the Bradford district and that we will get to see these top class athletes in our district over two days of this prestigious event.
“We are delighted that not only the world’s best women cyclists will be setting off from Bradford city centre for the Women’s Elite Road Race, but also that the Men’s Elite Road Race will be coming through our beautiful spa town of Ilkley and delightful village of Addingham. “We have already seen the economic and social benefits of hosting major cycle races, when we had the Tour de France Grand Depart come to the district across both stages in 2014. We have also hosted the Tour de Yorkshire numerous times including as both a start and a finish
location. “The 2019 UCI World Road Championships is the chance for us to extend our famous Bradford hospitality to the thousands of fans from across the world who follow the cyclists to the event, as well as to showcase the best of our district to the estimated 225 million people who follow the race on television.
“I am sure that the event will be met with the same level of creative enthusiasm demonstrated by the fantastic land art and route dressing that was produced for the Tour de Yorkshire, which saw a win for the district in the land art competition in 2017 and Ilkley win the best dressed host location in 2018.” The Championships will run from 21-29 September 2019
ECB and ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 aim to take cricket to 1 million children The ECB and ICC announced their strategic plan to use the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 to boost cricket participation and help drive the longterm growth of the game in England and Wales. It will use the iconic global sporting event - the biggest prize in world cricket - to inspire and engage 1 million young people, aged between 5 and 12, in the next year. A core pillar of this plan is the Cricket World Cup Schools Programme which launched recently and will aim to engage over 700,000 school children across England and Wales in conjunction with Chance to Shine. The launch event was held at Lord's Cricket Ground - host venue for the ICC Cricket World Cup Final on 14 July 2019 – where current England players David Willey and Heather Knight joined former cricketers Isa Guha and Graeme Swann along with local school children from St. Edwards Primary School.
framework of Cricket Unleashed and supporting the South Asian Action Plan launched earlier this year, the strategy has four key aims to drive growth throughout the game:
1.Creating stronger, diverse, familyfriendly clubs: A World Cup Small Grants Scheme will see £1,000 grants made available for 3,000 recreational cricket clubs and 3,000 clubs will throw open their doors for special Cricket World Cup events 2.Expanding the reach, relevance and scale of cricket within 8,000 Primary Schools: A World Cup Schools Programme - developed in conjunction with Chance to Shine – to bring cricket to the playground and classroom. It will engage up to 15,000 teachers through the Cricket World Cup teachers' portal and offer World Cup Kwik Cricket competitions in schools.
Together, they took part in a classroom session, using cricket as an educational tool; one key element of the World Cup Schools Programme where teachers can sign up to an online portal, full lesson ideas that take cricket into the classroom.
3.Expanding the accessibility of All Stars Cricket: The ECB's flagship entrylevel scheme for 5-8-year-olds will benefit from a ICC Cricket World Cup take-over to further extend the reach of the programme. This will be coupled with a commitment to drive the growth of All Stars Cricket in innercity areas in conjunction with the South Asian Action Plan.
The strategy builds on the wider ECB
4.Attract New Fans: Engaging families
in cricket through the ICC Cricket World Cup by tailored marketing, in-stadium experiences and out-of-venue activities
encourage as many schools as possible to be part of the programme and provide this unique opportunity to their pupils."
ECB Chief Executive Tom Harrison said:
Ambassador for the Cricket World Cup 2019 Schools Programme, Graeme Swann said:
"Having the ICC Cricket World Cup played here in England and Wales gives us a once-in-a-generation opportunity. We must turn the excitement of a World Cup on home soil into a guaranteed route to draw more players and volunteers to recreational cricket. Cricket can inspire its next generation of fans and players by taking the tournament into clubs, playgrounds and classrooms across England and Wales and we will be working hard together to make the most of this moment." ICC Managing Director ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Steve Elworthy, added: "The ICC Cricket World Cup arrives back to England and Wales for the first time in 20 years and now is the time to seize this priceless opportunity and use the tournament as a platform for growth to create a new generation of fans and players. Through our dedicated Schools Programme, we are excited to take cricket into the classrooms across England and Wales as well as giving young people the unique chance to be part of sporting history. I know how important education through sport can be and we want to
"I am delighted to be part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 Schools Programme and play a part in inspiring a new generation of fans and players through this great tournament. "Hosting a World Cup here in England and Wales presents a unique opportunity to use the impact of the tournament to grow the game at grass root level and give schools the opportunity to be part of the special atmosphere a World Cup brings. "I played in the 2011 World Cup and it is the biggest stage in cricket with the world's eyes on you - and now as a fan I find myself excited by what the Cricket World Cup promises deliver for the sport next year." Minister for Sport and Civil Society Tracey Crouch MP said: "Cricket World Cup 2019 will be the biggest cricket tournament to date; showcasing the best of England and Wales on the global stage. By attracting thousands of visitors to our shores and inspiring the next generation of cricket superstars to pick up a bat and ball, I am confident we will have a cricket legacy for the nation to be proud of."

Manchester United In Trouble And Could Lose Paul Pogba, Says Didier Deschamps Didier Deschamps suggested the prospect of Paul Pogba once again quitting Manchester United for Juventus was not so farfetched.
Manchester United are in trouble and fans of Italian champions Juventus are right to dream of signing Paul Pogba, France's FIFA World Cup-winning coach Didier Deschamps said. "All of Manchester United are in trouble. Pogba is still the same and is one of the best midfielders in the world," Deschamps told Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport of the tensions between Pogba and United boss Jose Mourinho. "However, I'll never comment on relationships between players and coaches." Pogba has been linked with a return to Juventus, whom he joined for free in 2012 after walking out of United after the club failed to tie him to a new contract. He then returned to United in 2016 on a five-year contract for a then-record transfer fee of 105m euros (ÂŁ89.3 million). Deschamps suggested the prospect of Pogba once again quitting United for Juventus was not so far-fetched. "Dreams are a part of life," he added. "Maybe the fans hadn't dreamed of Cristiano Ronaldo, who ended up signing.
"Sometimes dreams come true, but compared to a few years ago it would cost Juve a lot more to buy Pogba now."
Deschamps managed Juventus in the mid-2000s after the club were demoted from Serie A amid a match-fixing scandal, having played for five years with the club until 1999. "Today's Juve is as strong the one with which I won the Champions League in 1996," said the 49-yearold of the Italian champions' last European triumph.
champion like CR7 (Ronaldo) allows you to reach every corner of the globe."
Deschamps, meanwhile, said he was happy coaching France but believes former France and Juventus teammate Zinedine Zidane could return to Italy having left Real Madrid last
summer. "That position is already occupied by a great coach like (Massimilano) Allegri, who is doing a great job," said Deschamps. "Maybe Zidane, with his Bianconero past like mine, will have his chance. We'll see."
"The difference is also down to details. This Juventus has the means to be among the favourites. "Cristiano Ronaldo makes Champions League victory almost obligatory. "With him, Juventus have guaranteed a player who can be decisive in important moments. He is a great professional," Deschamps said. "Serie A is an important league anyway, even if the Premier League is ahead because of the superior financial means. "The arrival of Ronaldo guarantees greater exposure for the league abroad, a bit like Neymar in Ligue 1. "Of course people talked about Juventus before, but it's clear that the marketing effect of a

Women-Only Racing Championship Aims To Find F1 Stars
A new women-only motorsport competition, W Series, will launch next year with the aim of finding female Formula 1 stars. The series has been backed by major names in F1, including 13-time grand prix winner David Coulthard and Red Bull design engineer Adrian Newey. It will offer a prize fund of 1.5 million dollars and free entry for 18-20 competitors, who will be selected on merit following tests and appraisals. The overall winner will collect 500,000 dollars. Organisers aim to stage six 30minute races at top circuits in Europe and future plans could see the series expand to America, Asia and Australia. "At the heart of W Series' DNA is the firm belief that women can compete equally with men in motorsport. However, an all-female series is
essential in order to force greater female participation," organisers said in a statement.
The last woman to start an F1 grand prix was Italy's Lella Lombardi in 1976, but Coulthard says female drivers can compete with their male counterparts. "In order to be a successful racing driver, you have to be skilled, determined and physically fit, but you don't have to be a man," Coulthard told the Daily Mail newspaper. "We believe that female and male racing drivers can and should compete on equal terms if they have the same opportunity and training -- and we're going to try to make that happen. There's no reason the next Lewis Hamilton should not be a woman."

Khabib Nurmagomedov kept his crown with a fourth-round submission victory over Ireland's Conor McGregor in Las Vegas. Stand up, get that belt wrapped around you. You won. The guy who's yelling at you means nothing." White wasn't sure what the future held for Nurmagomedov as far as opponents. McGregor says he wants a rematch but the NAC must rule first on just when the undefeated champion can return to the Octagon. "We have to see how this stuff plays out with Khabib," White said.
Nurmagomedov had barely released his hold after McGregor tapped out when he launched himself over the Octagon fence, apparently targeting McGregor's training partner, Dillon Danis, as security tried to quell the chaos in the crowd. Nurmagomedov was hustled out surrounded by security officers as a pro-McGregor crowd jeered and threw drinks at him. While UFC president Dana White did not present Nurmagomedov the title belt, fearing arousing the crowd's ire, he told TMZ in video posted on the UFC website that the Russian would not be stripped of the title and any punishment for the melee after UFC 229 would likely come from the NAC not the UFC. "He absolutely keeps his title," White said. "And
