The culture secretary Karen Bradley has been asked to explain why a black woman has been blocked by the government from joining the all-white board of Channel 4. According to the The Guardian, Althea Efunshile, the only female BME candidate for the board was vetoed by Bradley, even though Efunshile was the former deputy chief of Arts Council England, having stepped down in October. The four other candidates, all white men, were conversely approved. Both Efunshile and the other candidates were put forward by Ofcom - responsible for finding, vetting, and appointing Channel 4 non-executive directors - and were all deemed by the organisation to be of “high calibre”. The former culture minister David Lammy has asked Bradley to explain how and why she made the “extraordinary” decision “This really does beggar belief,” said Lammy.

“The secretary of state must now tell us why she blocked Althea Efunshile’s appointment and why she ignored Ofcom’s recommendation given Althea’s wealth of experience, expertise and outstanding track record.” Efunshile was appointed as deputy chief executive of ACE in 2012, after joining as chief operating officer in 2007, and awarded a CBE in June in for services to arts and culture. Furthermore, she was also made the first chairman of the National College for Creative and Cultural Industries. If approved, she would have joined the board as the only non-white individual, and the fourth woman, out of a total of current 13 members. An email sent to staff by David Abraham, the chief executive of Channel 4, lambasted Efunshile’s rejection and stated it was the latest example of the government’s “worrying and unprecedented” interference; following conflict arising out of the broadcaster’s future, either potentially being sold or having operations moved out of London. The Department for Culture,
Althea Efunshile, the only female BME candidate Media, and Sport has stated: “Nonexecutive members of the Channel 4 Corporation board are appointed by Ofcom with the approval of the secretary of state. The secretary of state approved four candidates on the basis that they met the specific skills and experiences set out in Ofcom’s
four advertised job descriptions.” Channel 4 has further clarified in a statement, “the appointment of nonexecutive directors to the Channel 4 board are made my Ofcom in agreement with the Department for Culture, Media, and Sport”.

A Bradford man has been jailed for six years for his part in the exchange of nearly £1 million of heroin outside a Bradford house.

They were sentenced at Bradford Crown Court yesterday after earlier pleading guilty to conspiracy to supply class A drugs. The court was that that police parked outside Hurd’s home address on Woodview Terrace, off North Avenue, Bradford, when they saw Hanif, of Sewell Road, Laisterdyke, approach the front door with an empty bag. Around half an hour later, he left with the bag “bulging” at the seams, and the pair shook hands before Hanif got into a taxi. The vehicle was followed by police and Hanif was arrested.
He said Hanif admitted his role as a “drugs courier”, but had played no greater role in the organisation than that. Sentencing the pair, Recorder Simon Batiste said: “Class A drugs are a scourge on our cities, and Bradford has a particular problem with heroin. “When someone is found to be involved, only significant custodial sentences can be justified. “You, Hurd, were more seriously involved than you, Hanif. Self-harm by children rises steeply in England and Wales by MO BHANA mo@asian-standard.co.uk
Nearly 19,000 children and young people were treated in hospital in England and Wales after self-harming in the last year, a figure that has risen steeply in recent years, according to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The NSPCC, which collected the data from hospitals using freedom of information requests, says the rise of 14% over the last three years – an extra 2,400 cases – is worrying. A growing number of hospital beds are being filled by children who have taken violent and drastic steps to alleviate their emotional pain and suffering, says the charity. The children most likely to harm themselves are aged 13 to 17 and tend to be struggling to cope with the pressures of modern life, the charity warned. Childline, run by the NSPCC, also delivered 50 counselling sessions a day in the last year to children and young people about self-harm. The
charity is appealing for funds, saying it can deal with only three out of every four young people who call the free hotline. One 14-year-old boy who contacted Childline said: “Sometimes I get flashbacks from what happened when I was younger and I cope with the horrible memories by cutting myself. School helped take my mind off things but now that the holidays are here I’m struggling. My parents always seem to be too busy for me and I don’t want to tell my friends what happened. I feel so miserable and lonely – can you please help?” Peter Wanless, chief executive of the NSPCC, said: “A frightening number of children and teenagers are being driven to self-harm as a way of dealing with unresolved feelings, tensions and distress in their lives. “Knowing hospital beds are full of young people crying out for help should be a real wake-up call to all those [who] care for the wellbeing of the younger generation. It is vital we confront the fact that an increasing number are struggling to deal with the pressures and demands of
modern-day life, to such an extent they are inflicting terrible damage upon themselves.” Dr Max Davie of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health cited the sexualisation of children in the media
and the pressure of social media on children and adolescents to look good and as if they are having a good time, when the reality might be different. “Cyber bullying is a problem and schools are focusing intensely on
academic work and examinations. Children need also to learn about relationships and emotional wellbeing. “I think schools need permission from government to see that as part of their remit,” he said.
Inventor of £5 bank note blasts animal fat protestors as 'stupid by MO BHANA mo@asian-standard.co.uk
The man who invented the new British £5 note has lambasted vegetarian and vegans who have launched protests in the UK about the five pound note containing animal fat. The Australian man behind the polymer bank note, Professor David Solomon says polymer notes contain trivial amounts of tallow which is also found in candles and soap, yet the Bank of England has asked its supply chain to find an alternative. “It’s stupid. It’s absolutely stupid,” Solomon told the Australian radio station 2GB. “There’s trivial amounts of it in there.” He believes polymer notes were extremely hard to forge and had a lot more benefits for the consumer than previous paper notes. “It picks up less drugs than paper notes and you don’t chop down trees,” he said. “It’s more hygenic than a
paper note by a long way.”

More than 120,000 people have supported an online petition urging the Bank of England to cease using animal fat in the production of five pound notes – the first polymer notes
“The new STG5 notes contain animal fat in the form of tallow. This is unacceptable to millions of vegans, vegetarians, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and others in the UK,” the petition states.
“We demand that you cease to use animal products in the production of currency that we have to use.” The $10 note was the first polymer bank note in circulation in Australia in 1988.
The note was developed by the country’s research and development body, CSIRO, led by a team under Solomon.

UK Sikh network: Sikhs encounter unacceptably high levels of discrimination in their daily lives by MO BHANA
mo@asian-standard.co.uk
A survey has highlighted high levels of discrimination aimed towards the Sikh community. The UK Sikh Network found that fourteen per cent of Sikhs (or 1 in 7) have directly experienced discrimination in the workplace in the last 12 months, with those that men and women that keep uncut hair along with turban wearing Sikhs the most affected.
“We have met with the Office for National Statistics (ONS) about the survey and will be following up with a more detailed discussion around the results especially around identity and ethnicity for the Census 2021,” said Singh. “We have also been in contact with a number of interested government departments including the Department for Communities and
Local Government (DCLG), the Home Office, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), Department for Education (DfE) and a number of police forces. “The purpose of these meetings will be to discuss in more detail the specific findings with a positive intent to inform policy and decision making as well as approaches and changes in recording and tackling
crimes against Sikhs". The percentage of Sikh men experiencing discrimination is almost 9.5% compared to 6% of Sikh women. In terms of age the highest percentage were Sikhs in their twenties. More than 1 in 5 or 21% of those taking part in the survey have personally experienced race hate crime either in the form of verbal or physical abuse in the last 12 months. 13% of Sikhs over the age of 16 taking part in the UK Sikh Survey 2016 have themselves or know a friend or relative who has been a victim or a target for sexual grooming. This rises to 15% when considering responses from Sikh women and 17% when examining responses from Sikhs under the age of 30.
Eighteen per cent of Sikhs, approximately 1 in 5 say that they have encountered discrimination in a public place. The most common example given is airports (UK and abroad), others include public transport, sporting events, shopping, at school, in restaurants and coffee shops, in cinemas, at theme parks, at tourist attractions, at the doctors, in hospital or simply walking on the street.
The level of dissatisfaction is similar between Sikh men and women, but higher for those under 40 years of age at 76%, compared to those over 40 years of age at 67%. Regionally Sikhs in the Yorkshire and Humber region are most dissatisfied at 76.7%, although the percentages for other regions with large numbers of respondents is little better – East Midlands (75%), London (71.6%), West Midlands (71.4%) and South East (70.1%).
Jas Singh of the Sikh Network and one of leading figures behind the survey said the organisation has had a very positive response and interest in the UK Sikh Survey findings from government officials through to public bodies and statistical organisations.
Speed limits could be eased on motorway networks to help end misery for thousands of drivers by MO BHANA mo@asian-standard.co.uk
Motoring groups have complained that average speed limits on long stretches of motorways is unfair and unnecessarily slowing down Britain's roads. Transport minister John Hayes has ordered Highways England to look at whether average speed limits at roadworks can be 'safely' increased beyond the maximum 50mph to 60mph. Mr Hayes also wants to increase the use of contraflows, where temporary lanes are opened on the other side of the motorway, to ease delays caused by roadworks. Currently drivers are handed a minimum £100 fine and three penalty points added to their licence. They catch thousands of people every day with fines worth a combined £3million a year. Mr Hayes said: 'I have asked Highways
England to look at shortening the length of roadworks to reduce the impact on road users. 'Following my discussions with them, Highways England are working towards utilising shorter lengths and looking at whether they can safely increase speed limits through roadworks, which will improve the overall customer experience and minimise disruption. 'Contraflows and reducing lane size can be used to allow for more lanes to be opened during maintenance.' Ed King, the President of the AA, said: “If you look at sections like the M3 on the M25 to Basingstoke you have 25 miles of roadworks with a 50mph limit. “It's very difficult for drivers to concentrate over a period of time at those speeds. Shortening the length of those roadworks would make it safer and mean less people are caught out. “Average speed cameras are increasingly viewed as cash cows because they are just raking in the money over long stretches.”
The move comes after experts at the health watchdog, Nice recommended that speed bumps should be removed so motorists do not create fumes by constantly breaking and accelerating as they drive between them. New draft guidance for England said some stretches of the motorway should have 50mph speed limits – displayed on overhead signs – to encourage drivers to stay at a constant speed and which could then be relaxed at night when there was little traffic. Other suggestions include reducing the impact of air pollution include rolling out 20mph zones across built-up areas and extra speed cameras. Nice also said a review of tree-lined streets was required as tree canopies stop fumes escaping and make the roads below more polluted and that councils should display ‘no-idling’ signs urging drivers not to leave their cars running. Air pollution causes up to 25,000 deaths a year from heart attacks, strokes, asthma and lung disease, according to Nice.
The health watchdog wants councils to adopt the proposals but they are not legally binding. Professor Mark Baker, the director for the Centre of Guidelines at Nice, said: "If the traffic is such that you are stopping and starting, decelerating and accelerating, then that increases emissions, pollution and fuel consumption. "In those circumstances, slowing everything down to 60mph or 50mph is the best approach - but not all the time." Ralph Bagge, leader of South Bucks District Council and deputy chairman of the guideline committee, added: "Smooth driving reduces emissions and stop-start acceleration and deceleration braking is harmful. "It is putting out more through the tail pipe but secondly braking is also grinding bits of very fine particulate matter which goes into the atmosphere."

COVER STORY
Britain divided: Integrated or segregated, Britain stand’s divided on the topic by AYESHA BABAR ayesha@asian-standard.co.uk
Does living in a diverse area make white people more tolerant of immigration and minorities, or does it cause them to feel threatened and insecure? Do ethnic minorities need to do more to integrate into ‘British society’? A number of questions and debates have risen following a report commissioned by former Prime Minister, David Cameron, claiming social exclusion has reached "worrying levels". At the end of a year-long study of community cohesion in Britain, Dame Louise Casey has branded ministerial attempts to boost integration of ethnic minorities as amounting to little more than “saris, samosas and steel drums for the already well-intentioned”. Casey claims successive governments have failed for more than a decade to ensure that social integration in the UK has kept up with the “unprecedented pace and scale of immigration” and have allowed some local communities to become increasingly divided. She has come up with 12 initial recommendations for action, based around the themes of the review. However, Eric Kaufmann, a Professor of Politics at Birkbeck College, University of London, who wrote a paper entitled: ‘the White British response to ethnic change’, profoundly disagrees with Casey’s findings. Kaufmann asks the question: “If whites in diverse places are more tolerant is this because the intolerant whites have left?”
Kaufmann believes White British people in wards with more minorities and immigrants are more open to immigration. He says his findings show, in wards that are almost entirely white, 90 per cent of White British people want immigration to be reduced; but where visible minorities make up half or more of the population, this drops to about 70 per cent. “Half the effect arises because whites in diverse wards tend to be young single urban renters, all relatively tolerant segments,” says Kaufmann. “We discovered positive contact effects in which whites living with larger shares of minorities and immigrants displayed more positive attitudes toward outgroups than whites in whiter areas.” Yet there is another, less sunny, side to the story. When Kaufmann looked at larger areas above 100,000 population, he says 84 per cent of people expressed more hostile attitudes to minorities and immigrants.” “White British people in diverse wards (population averaging 7,500) are ten points more accepting of immigration than those in the whitest wards. “By contrast, whites in diverse Local Authorities (population around 100,000) are around five points more likely than whites in homogenous Local Authorities to call for a restriction.” He cites East London in the 1970s as a primary example: “The area was once a hotbed of National Front activity. By the 2008, the area had become diverse and, far right support shifted further out.” Kaufmann’s views are echoed by Blackburn based Khadijah Makda, who

COVER STORY has raised a number of children, all of whom are married and work in the vicinity. She believes that Dame Casey’s report does not take into account the cultural aspects of care that align with traditional family values and belief. “We believe that one’s father is the door to key to heaven and the mother is the door,” says Makda. “The report simply does not take into account the fact that we just do not feel comfortable placing elders in care homes. “We would rather we do it ourselves, so one partner, be it the husband or the wife has to take care of the elder, the children and the house.” Makda believes by simply abandoning elders and children would make for the breakdown of the entire family system: “The mum would be replaced by the microwave and the father would be replaced by the TV. This would prove to be the death knell for the family system.” Another of Casey’s recommendations includes the need for councils around the UK to pick up and acting upon signs that integration is breaking down at the earliest stage. However, Ishtiaq Dad, a 35-year-old businessman from Batley, lambasted the proposals, labelling them ‘daft’. He said: “I love Bollywood movies and a Bollywood movie makes more sense than this. Salman Khan, my hero can do a better job than this budhi (old woman). He gives money to poor people in India and gives them water in Ramadhan.” Ishtiaq cites many examples of young Muslims who have gone out of their way to feed homeless people in and around the country, aswell as helping people affected by natural disasters. “Maybe this budhi should have done her research properly and actually looked at how compassionate the Muslim community is when it comes to charity. Maybe setting up initiatives where people from all faiths go out and help the needy? “Wouldn’t this make more sense? As this would, in my opinion, bring people together and soften people’s hearts.” So why are white people, who live in diverse local authorities or counties with a lack of opportunities to mix with minorities, are worried? Dr Alan Mendoza, of the Henry Jackson Society security think-tank, is of the opinion that Dame Casey’s review contains serious concerns about the state of integration between different communities in the UK today, particularly Muslim communities in certain areas. “I would urge the Government to strongly consider the nature of this problem and commit to action to counter it.” Whilst Jon Yates, of The Challenge, a leading social integration charity, said: “Unless we act urgently our country is in danger of becoming a less integrated and more divided place.” However, Kauffman insists a policy solution would be to encourage more opportunities for positive inter-group contacts, such as educational, religious or sporting exchanges.
He makes a useful analogy with attitudes to nuclear power plants: “Those who live far enough away not to worry, or close enough to understand the actual risks, are less fearful than those in the middle.” He says for instance, universityeducated left-wing voters (Green, Labour, Lib Dem) tend to be proimmigration. Conservative voters without degrees, or supporters of populist right parties such as UKIP or the BNP, tend to favour lower levels. Essentially, while white British people select whiter areas to move to than minorities, whites who favour and oppose immigration move to similar places. Kauffmann sees that, for a wide range of individual and ward characteristics, such as education or deprivation, whites who originate in diverse wards tend to move to much whiter ones. Yet there is barely a paper clip’s difference between whites who vote for anti-immigration parties (mainly BNP and UKIP) and other whites. “There is no difference between pro-immigration whites and antiimmigration whites in their propensity to leave a diverse area, i.e. ‘white flight’. If the population of a ward is like water in a tub, we could say that in diverse areas, the water is relatively liberal on immigration.” According to Kaufmann, the bottom line is that local diversity does lead to more tolerant white attitudes and this is not the result of white flight. “As more locales become diverse, this should lead to interethnic contact and more positive white attitudes to outgroups. “Yet at the same time, the ‘halo’ of threat will push out to new areas,
Maybe this budhi should have done her research properly and actually looked at how compassionate the Muslim community is when it comes to charity. Maybe setting up initiatives where people from all faiths go out and help the needy? Wouldn’t this make more sense? As this would, in my opinion, bring people together and soften people’s hearts. Ishtiaq Dad awakening threat perceptions. Since more whites live in diverse Local Authorities than in diverse wards, it is difficult to know where the balance will lie.
“This means policies such as refugee dispersal which reduce minority segregation may not produce more positive white attitudes to immigration.
“Indeed, as we note elsewhere, rapid changes often produce the opposite effect, so policies designed to reduce segregation are better justified on other grounds.”

Student described as a "strong swimmer" drowned first time he went into sea during family holiday in Turkey by MO BHANA mo@asian-standard.co.uk
A student mysteriously drowned in the sea during a family holiday to Turkey, an inquest heard. "Strong swimmer" Subhan Khan died after he suddenly got into difficulties in the Aegean coastal resort of Altinkum. The 19-year-old's father Nazakat Khan said his son was a strong swimmer in swimming pools, but "it was the first time he had been in the sea on that holiday.” An inquest into his death at Birmingham Coroner's Court on Monday heard the business and commerce university student was on holiday with three cousins when tragedy struck on May 18 this year. Mr Khan said his son had phoned him the day before he died. Mr Khan told the court: “He just
sounded so happy and told me he was really enjoying himself. He said he had planned to go on a boat trip the following day. He was just his usual happy self. “Subhan was a strong swimmer in swimming pools but it was the first time he had been in the sea on that holiday.” The boat had been travelling for half an hour when it anchored up and those on board were offered the opportunity to swim. Subhan’s friend, Mr Arif said: “We had gone into the sea together. It was very calm conditions and there were no currents. Subhan was swimming fine he was a good swimmer. “After about five minutes I told Subhan I was going back on the boat which I did. “Shortly after, I heard people shouting and panicking and then I saw Subhan being pulled onto a speedboat which
then headed for shore.” Mr Khan, from Wineford Croft, was taken to hospital in Altinkum but it is believed he was declared dead on arrival. Mr Arif said the sea wasn’t cold and was still, with no currents. A post mortem revealed Mr Khan died from drowning. Pathologist Dr Adrian Young carried out tests on the student’s body and discovered a small bruise above his right eyebrow, but didn’t believe it was significant in his death. Miss Emma Brown, coroner for Birmingham and Solihull, recorded a verdict of misadventure. She said: “It is a tragic loss. This was a young man who had gone on a trip with friends and had been enjoying himself. Mr Khan went into the water and sadly drowned. My sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.”

Apologetic Teenager sold Class A drugs to repay a debt for crashing a hired car by MO BHANA mo@asian-standard.co.uk
An apologetic teenager who was apprehended by police officers for selling Class A Drugs said he was dealing because he had to repay a
debt for crashing a car that he had hired for a family occasion. Harris Saqib, from Bradford who was only 19-years-old at the time but has since turned 20, also told the officers that he had to do a total of 80 deals before 10pm that day.
Saqib said he was unable to pay for the damages to the vehicle and was instructed to sell the drugs for three weeks to in order to clear the debt. Mr Saqib was arrested in Bradford after a police officer noticed that he was selling a number of drugs to an unidentified individual on March 3. Furthermore, a subsequent search by officers led them to find the A class drugs hidden under his trousers along with £346 stashed in various parts of his vehicle. He was caught with 59 wraps of Class A drugs, telling police: “It was going to be a busy day.” Because he was unable to pay for the damages to the vehicle, he said he was told to sell the drugs for three weeks to clear the outstanding debt. Saqib, who is married with a young child, is set to become a father once again, says he was provided with an Audi and a mobile phone to use whilst selling the drugs. He is said to have told the officers who arrested him that those who set him up with the drugs were going to drop off food for him because he did not have time for a meal break and that “Today was going to be a busy day.”
Harris Saqib
He admitted possession of the drugs with intent to supply and was giving 28 months in a young offenders
institution at Bradford Crown Court. The court heard he had previous convictions for robberies and aggravated vehicle taking, yet he was a carer for his mother who suffered from severe arthritis. Saqib’s solicitor advocate, Ashok Khullar, said his client was very honest with police from the outset and did not attempt to hide his involvement, therefore he had pleaded guilty from the outset. “He was acting under the clear direction of the people who provided him with a car and a phone and told him where to stop for food,” Mr Khullar said. However, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC said Mr Saqib should have thought about his family responsibilities before committing the offences. Although he was working under considerable pressure, he was part of the wicked trade in Class A drugs and custody was the only option. “I am very sorry for your mum, your wife and your child, but there it is,” the judge said. He made a confiscation order seizing the money found on Saqib when he was apprehended.

The Consequences Of Having A Foreign Name In Modern Britain by MO BHANA mo@asian-standard.co.uk

The term coconut, has been used to accuse someone of betraying their race, or culture, by implying that, like a coconut, they are brown on the outside but white on the inside. “Youngsters need to grow up and be proud of themselves and just get on with it. The almighty provides our sustenance, not some middle class ponce in a suit who eats microwave meals and does not have a clue about our rich background and our diverse ways.” Not everyone agrees. Snowar Khan
owns a successful recruitment company with his partner. It was when he began working alongside his wife, after a long stint at an established mainstream company that he realised revealing his Muslim identity was proving to be problematic. He took a second, very British, name – Simon, when contacting prospective customers via e-mail and over the phone. When contacting clients as his English alter ego, he says, he suddenly found that vacancies he'd previously been told were filled were now open. Although he decided to keep ‘Simon’ around, when representatives come to visit the office, he tells clients that Simon is out of the office.
"Changing the name was a case of opening the doors," he says. "So in business now I approach my customers as Simon and quite a few come in expecting to speak to Simon, but they have to speak me instead.” Not all Asians approve. Blackburn based Aqeela Makda, a 25 year old fashion graduate, who recently landed a role as a Business Development Manager, dismisses the practice as 'immature'. “In order to attain economic benefits, those who make corrections to their names are misleading the community and are a disgrace. “And even if they get the job they never regain the respect of the employer because they have already

tried to mislead them.”
Instead of wasting time at sheesha cafes and listening to gangster rap, here is an idea, why not just stick your head in between some books, work really hard and show everyone that by not employing you, they will be making a big, big mistake. Kalpesh Ladd
Makda’s views are shared by the Commission for Racial Equality. A commission spokeswoman said: “Although we know of employers who have unfortunately discriminated against ethnic minority applicants. To change one's name is, in effect an extreme measure, designed to collude with discriminatory practices and we would be very much against it.” Makda ends the conversation by saying: “Perhaps the answer involves two basic British values - freedom of choice and good manners. While we don't always expect people to always say our names correctly, I do expect them to try.”

Keeping up with the khans! by MO BHANA
mo@asian-standard.co.uk
Amir Khan’s family drama is sit to hit the TV screens after his wife publicly accused her in-laws of trying to beat her up. Amir and his wife, Faryal Makhdoom have teamed up with Sky channel Booom TV for a Kardashian style programme called Home With The Khans where cameras will follow their family life. Boom TV’s Raja Khan confirmed the news on his Whatsapp status with his status set as: ‘Amir Khan & Faryal Makhdoom!! Coming soon on Boom!!! This was complemented with an image of Amir, Raja and Faryal at Raja’s office in Birmingham. And after their explosive row this week — a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of Amir and Faryal would offer top entertainment. However, is bringing this issue into the public eye a real issue or a big publicity stunt? The tension within the Khan family exploded this week when Faryal lashed out at Amir’s family members in an angry Snapchat post. She vexed lyrical about her husband, acclaimed boxer, Amir Khan being asked to allegedly divorce her whilst pregnant and also spoke of an alleged altercation with Amir’s sister, Maariyah. In one comment, thought to be aimed
Amir Kahn with family at his sister Mariyah, she said: “What about when your sister-in-law come to hit you when your husband’s not at home and still u don’t raise ur hand out of respect for ur husband!” She also accused her mother-in-
law Falak of trying to destroy her marriage, saying: “When you force your son to divorce his wife, when she’s 9 months pregnant! And your son doesn’t … and he sticks besides his wife. He’s called a pussy!?” Now the entire world is speaking about it and quite frankly, they are enjoying seeing the Khan family getting ripped apart, in public for that matter. And now they will be able to get the popcorn out and enjoy watching this debacle unfold further. Yes, there seems to be a clash of cultures from Faryal’s modern outlook, to the Khan’s more traditional view on life. A source said: “Amir and Faryal have a big fan base and love letting their followers into their life on social media, but a TV show is next level. “After the events of this week Faryal has made it clear that no one messes with her or Amir. “Their life is always full of drama. It’s going to be very interesting to see how that unfolds on screen. “Faryal is immensely proud of her family and won’t hold back, that’s for sure.”

HEALTH
The NHS urgently needs to improve patient safety in its hospitals
John Tingle Reader in Health Law, Nottingham Trent University
Hospitals in the UK could be a lot safer than they are. Unfortunately, the NHS seems to be a long way off developing a culture of care that puts the patient first. In the latest State of Care report, produced by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the authors write that patient safety “remains the single biggest challenge for hospital providers”. The CQC, the independent regulator of health and adult social care in England, rated one in ten NHS acute trusts as inadequate for safety. The latest patient safety failing to make headlines was the news that a premature baby was left to die in a “sluice room” at North Manchester General Hospital. Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust’s review of its Royal Oldham and North Manchester General hospitals identified several “unacceptable situations”. The report condemns staff attitudes which led to another mother’s deteriorating
health being wrongly attributed to mental health issues – a misdiagnosis which saw her eventually die from a “catastrophic haemorrhage”. The review also points to other cases including a baby dying because a mother’s rare blood type was not identified and a woman needing a colostomy because her condition was missed three times. Such tragic and unforgivable patient safety failures and poor staff attitudes have been seen before in the NHS and the lessons from past errors seem to be going unlearnt. The Morecambe Bay Inquiry report, which was published in March 2015, revealed serious failures in care at the maternity unit at Furness General Hospital: The result was avoidable harm to mothers and babies, including tragic and unnecessary deaths. What followed was a pattern of failure to recognise the nature and severity of the problem, with, in some cases, denial that any problem existed, and a series of missed opportunities to intervene that involved almost every level of the NHS.
In 2013, we had the Francis Report which investigated the terrible and tragic failures of care in Mid Staffordshire where significant numbers of patients suffered and died. This was the worst and bleakest moment in the history of the NHS.
There is a disputed estimate of how many patients died in that crisis. One report suggested that between 400 and 1,200 patients died as a result of poor care over the 50 months between January 2005 and March 2009 at

Stafford hospital. There have been many more reports of NHS patient safety failures which have caused unnecessary patient death and suffering. Not much has been learned History has not served the NHS well in this regard. As far back as 2000, patient safety issues were being identified as a serious problem in the NHS by the Department of Health. The DoH’s seminal report, Organisation with a Memory, set the patient safety policy development strategy for the NHS. It found then: Inquiries and incident investigations determine that “the lessons must be learned”, but the evidence suggests

that the NHS as a whole is not good at doing so. In 2016, going forward to 2017, 17 years on from the publication of Organisation with a Memory, it’s questionable whether the NHS is any better at learning from patient safety errors. The CQC report and the patient safety maternity incidents in Manchester reported by the BBC are all stark reminders of what can go wrong in the NHS and raise again the question of why and what is being done about it. Post Francis, successive governments have worked hard to develop and implement good patient safety policies and strategies, but this has
not been enough. To bring about a lasting change that is patient focused, healthcare professionals need to develop more patient focused caring attitudes, a new sense of patientfocused professionalism. For nearly 17 years, and some would say from even before that, health quality and patient safety improvement strategies have been centrally directed from the DoH and by other bodies, but these have all failed to deliver an effective and lasting patient-focused NHS safety culture. More attention should now be paid to changing and developing the NHS patient safety care culture at the local level. This article originally appeared in the conversation

WOMEN OF INFLUENCE
Local App Mumpreneur Mehmoona Usman Shares Her Journey From Being A Housewife To A Techie! by FATIMA PATEL fatima@asian-standard.co.uk
Manchester based Mehmoona Usman (31), a trained pharmacist left her highflying career to be a mother to her two beautiful young children Zaina (4) and Zayaan (3). Having always been someone who loved to work and the only woman in her family to have a formal education and work, her life changed when she faced postnatal depression after her second child, in effect leading to a weight gain to a dress size 24. Having realised that she needs to turn her life around, she created local app Be Glam, the uber for beauty that connects busy women to freelance local beauticians to get them red carpet ready at their convenience of time and location. The idea came about when she realised that being a busy mom left her with little time to look after herself and drive down to a beauty salon while juggling school runs etc. Be Glam not only works for the end consumer but also helps provide a platform
to market and create job opportunities for local freelance beauticians at a click of a button.
In the pursuit to encourage more beauticians to come onboard the beauty revolution app, Mehmoona recently held a make-up masterclass for beauticians in Manchester with the dazzling Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez. Joining them on the master class was Jacqueline’s pro make-up artist Shaan Mu. The event welcomed 150 guests including make-up artists, bloggers and make-up enthusiasts, all eager to learn Bollywood’s finest tips and tricks from the industry. Shaan created a glam glitter eye and lip look on his muse Jacqueline, a look that is trending all over the world. The crowd enjoyed an interactive fun session between them which showed perfectly their chemistry as an artist and celebrity. They revealed little secrets like how Jacqueline would never use an eye highlighter, how Bollywood is all about the flawless look etc. We caught up with Mehmoona recently as our Woman of Influence this issue and here’s what she had to say.
Mumpreneur Mehmoona Usman From pharmacist, to motherhood, to now a beauty techie. What’s the journey been like? I wouldn’t sugar coat and say it has been super easy. Being a pharmacist and on 10 hours a day working schedule is stressful enough but when you become a mother, your priorities change and your life revolves around them. When I decided to put pharmacy career on hold, I had no idea that I would become a beauty techie. Being creative especially when it was makeup and hair related was always my passion, and when I enrolled on a 52-week part-time makeup and hair training while on
Mehmoona Usman at Talk of Manchester Awards
my maternity leave I didn’t think I would pursue it as a career. I got so involved and enjoyed every second of it. I wanted to pursue it as a career along with being a mommy but didn’t know how to market myself and get connected to the potential clients, it all required a lot of time and money. Thinking about the opportunities a freelancer makeup artist and hairstylist had were not many especially up North of England. I discussed the idea about developing a platform with my husband and BeGlam came into existence to help and support women like myself who do not have enough time on their hands along with busy lives to pursue a career as a makeup artist.
The biggest achievement is winning our very first award at Talk of Manchester Awards for the Best App of the year 2016.

@Asian_Standard
WOMEN OF INFLUENCE Your weight gain and post-natal depression gave you the motivation to set up BeGlam! What were the challenges you faced (if any) in getting it set up?
the bollywood makeup looks are achieved with minimal makeup.
Well, the first challenge is to accept the fact that you are suffering from depression with family and friends. You are scared you will be judged, and I was, just like any other person would be especially coming from an Asian family. You hear statements such as “ Why do you feel that way? You have been blessed with two beautiful children and a loving family. You have everything you can ask for.”
I hail from an Asian family where men are alpha males who are successful businessmen and women tend to be housewives. I have always believed there is no difference between men and women when it comes to choosing a career path and doing what you want. I always looked up to my father who has been a source of inspiration for me. I always competed with my brother whether it was education or sports and proved that I was as good at them as he was. I worked hard to earn my degree in Pharmacy and then pursue a career too. My father has supported me in everything whether it was supporting my education, my career and now my business. He has never made me feel that I cannot do it, whenever I feel let down he is there to advice me and hold my hand through it.
My family started to notice that I had a problem when I stopped looking after myself and food became my new friend. I felt ashamed and anxious facing anyone and didn’t feel like going out. I had to take hold of my life and start on my own journey with weight loss to start living for my children. I feel BeGlam will help women who want to look but don’t want to face crowds when they are down and can still have their “me time” away from crying children. What has the reaction been like from the beauty industry to BeGlam? We have been overwhelmed with the positive response from everyone whether it’s the professionals or beauty academies. We encourage beauty academies to come on board as the professionals graduating from their institutions can start earning from day 1 of them qualifying if they have the right skills. Since the official launch we have had 200 applicants in Manchester only who have come to our office to show their skills. As its a FREE service to join, there are no contracts and there are no set number of hours the professionals need to make themselves available. We also provide free training for our professionals from top beauty experts in the industry from UK and international. Recently, we had Zukreat from UK and Shaan Muttathil from bollywood showcasing two masterclasses in Manchester which have been a huge success.
What or who has been your greatest influence in your work and why?
What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment to date? Developing BeGlam app that you can download from iOS and Andriod was a dream come true. But working along with so many big names in the beauty industry such as Zukreat, Jacqueline Fernandez and many bloggers has added to the accomplishments. However, the biggest achievement is winning our very first award at Talk of Manchester Awards for the Best App of the year 2016. Getting recognised for the hard work we have put in this business makes me so proud
Mehmoona Usman is joined by Shaan and others at the make-up masterclass and humble. I would like to thank everyone who has made it possible especially my husband Mian Usman and my brother Muhammad Waqaas. What one thing have you learned through your career that has served you well over the years? Being humble and grounded to everyone you meet will get you much further, this is the lesson that was taught to my father by my grandfather and same thing has been hammered into my head. I believe we should appreciate where
we get in life but success shouldn’t get to our heads and change our equation with people. What advice would you offer anyone who wanted to go into your industry? Beauty industry is very competitive and it’s an ongoing learning process, so just be open to learning new techniques, about new products and changing habits as you go along. If you ever feel that you are failing just because one door closes, keep looking ahead at your goal and remain positive.
Finally, what’s the best advice you have received in your career that you wish to pass on to our readers. When I decided to becoming an entrepreneur I was scared but someone close to me said “It’s always about taking risks in business, play it as a game if you win then it’s a great achievement but if you fail you have learnt how to play the game while being on the journey use the experience and change your tactic and next time win the game.” I believe no failure is a failure it is an experience that moulds you in a better person.
You partnered up with Bollywood star Jacqueline Fernandez for a make-up master class, how did that come about and did you learn any tips yourself? BeGlam wants to be a unique platform and wants to set their standards high from the start. We were planning on a launch event and wanted someone to come on board who was known for being a beauty and style icon in women. Jacqueline Fernandez was the name that popped up while brainstorming with the team and who would have been better to accompany the superstar than her very own celebrity makeup artists Shaan Muttathil. When we discussed the idea about the first ever Bollywood Masterclass in UK with Jacqueline she was really excited and wanted to support Shaan in getting his first big break. They liked the idea of BeGlam and understood exactly what struggles can be faced by makeup artist and hairstylist when stepping in the industry and getting paid work. It was such a pleasure to have Jacqueline Fernandez and Shaan giving the insight into how
Shaan created a glam glitter eye and lip look on his muse Jacqueline

Junaid Jamshed: The man who gave up his music for god by MO BHANA mo@asian-standard.co.uk
Pakistani singer turned devotee of the Tabligh Jamaat, 52-year-old Junaid Jamshed made one last fateful journey, alongside his wife. They were amongst a group of 40 people who were on their way to Islamabad, when a Pakistan International Airlines flight crashed on its way from Chitral to Islamabad on Wednesday 7 December– everyone on board perished. Born in September 1964, he soared to fame in the 1980s with Vital Signs, one of Pakistan's first pop bands, achieving international acclaim and commercial success. In the 90’s, the group went their separate ways, with Junaid launching a very successful solo career. However, it was in 2004, that his life would change. He became acquainted to the famous scholar, Moulana Tariq Jameel sahib and soon enough the pair became inseparable, and soon enough at the height of his career, he gave it up to devote his life to the Tabligh Jamaat movement. His appearance changed drastically, he discarded the ditched leather jacket and stonewashed jeans for a more traditional ensemble and a beard. He went on to build a fashion empire, with a clothing boutique known as J., which has several outlets across Pakistan.
It is about time we as a nation decide that we will not let these religious fanatics prevail amongst us. They will be exposed and brought to task.
Junaid Jamshed and brought to task.” The 52-year-old had kept a low profile ever since, and was last pictured with his friends in Chitral on December 4. He publicly apologised for his remarks and sought forgiveness, and the case did not proceed further, with Jamshed keep since his passing, However, he came out of the controversy unscathed and continued to amass a significant following even outside Pakistan.
"He was a very good role model for young Muslims and Pakistani’s,” says Yusuf Makda of Batley. Everyone looked up to him," says Yusuf, "That's why he turned back on music and turned to Islam, to seek out the truth. Yusuf mentions a moment when he met Jamshed in Batley, at the Dark Lane masjid.: “He told us about how he was offered a blank cheque by a record producer, but both he and his wife decided not to take the money and instead, live every day as it comes, on just a little, but both decided that they turned their back on music and life a simple life.”
His life was not without controversy though. He was embroiled in a blasphemy case in late 2014 after a video emerged in which he allegedly made inappropriate comments. Then mobile video footage shared widely on social media, showing Jamshed being pummeled by a crowd at Jamshed at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport. The men were chanting slogans against the preacher, claiming he had committed blasphemy. The televangelist later said on his official Twitter account: “It is about time we as a nation decide that we will not let these religious fanatics prevail amongst us. They will be exposed
At the time of his death, the singer had almost 2.8 million Facebook fans. This year, he was listed in a compiltion of the World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims. Bobby Hussain of Heckmondwike
believes there will be no one else like him again: “He was one of a kind. He visited Bradford recently and was happy to talk to people. We were shocked as to how cool he came across; his grasp of the English language was phenomenal, he was truly amazing.” Snowy Khan, of Bradford laments the fact that he will be unable to see a man whom he respected again: “I will not be able to see him in this world again, but he will remain in the hearts of all those who knew him, and he was one of the most humble human beings you will have ever met. “Junaid may have left this world but he lives in the hearts of all those who listen to his naats and his lectures. May his soul be at peace.”

Racist ‘Pakémon’ stickers seen around London by MO BHANA mo@asian-standard.co.uk
Police have launched an investigation after commuters across London spotted ‘disgusting’ "Pakémon" stickers, featuring well known Muslims with the tagline ‘Gotta catch and deport them all.’ The stickers, mock-up versions of Pokémon cards, mimicking the real game’s slogan ‘Gotta catch ’em all’, mimic the popular children’s card game where players are awarded points for collecting Pokémon based on their rarity. One of the stickers features a photo of the London mayor Sadiq Khan, branding him the ‘most dangerous Pakemon’ with the tagline ‘Hamaskhan’ (an attempt to link him to Hamas). It states: ‘Description: Probably the most dangerous Pakémon, Hamaskhan believes that Londoners should learn to accept Islamic terrorism whilst he is mayor. ‘Weaknesses: Hamaskhan’s hatred of Christians and Jews will result in him losing power and a long prison sentence.’ The creator offers “200 terror points” to anyone who collects the offensive sticker of Mr Khan – dubbed “Hamaskhan”. Another sticker shows white Muslim convert Jordan Horner, stating: ‘Gingermo is not a true Pakémon,
having converted to Islam believing he might make some friends who are as angry and weak-minded as himself.’ Barack Obama is also featured and is described as ‘the USA’s Muslim in Chief’, along with a number of offensive and racist caricatures. Stickers have been reported all over the capital, including Bromley, Surbiton and Waterloo. A 29 year old man, who wished to remain anonymous, discovered the stickers at Borough Station and shared them on social media told
the Standard he wanted to show how “appallingly racist” they were. He told the Standard he wanted to show other people how “appallingly racist” they were. He said: “I felt surprised at first, when I saw them, and then disgusted and very disappointed that we now live in a Britain where some people feel empowered or protected to do this and get away with it. “I just wanted to let people know this was going on – they shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it.”
However, far-right Twitter accounts have been sharing photos of the stickers, urging people to swap and collect them. The appearance of the stickers has been viewed as evidence that people feel more and more comfortable expressing racist and Islamphobic views. Police are investigating the hate crime after the stickers were pasted on bus stops, cashpoints and at tube stations. British Transport Police confirmed the appearance of the stickers was being “investigated thoroughly” and urged Londoners to report further sightings. A spokesman said: "British Transport Police is committed to preventing incidents of hate crime and prejudice and all incidents of this nature are investigated thoroughly. "Everyone has the right to travel on the rail network without fear or intimidation. Racially or religiously motivated crime will simply not be tolerated. “ “The Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Sophie Linden, added: “Hate crime, in all its shapes and forms, will not be tolerated in London and there is absolutely no place for these abhorrent stickers anywhere in our city. “Transport for London is ensuring that these are immediately removed and the British Transport Police will be investigating.”

Aditya Chopra on Befikre: “My Second First Film” Releasing on the 9 of Decemberis the eagerly awaited, Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoorstarrer, Befikre. The film has been directed by none other than, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge director, Aditya Chopra. With a first film that has been so impactful, even to this day, it is understandable for Aditya to be nervous with every new film he makes. And that’s exactly how he’s feeling right now, days before the

release of Befikre. Similar to a note he had released, addressed to his late father Yash Chopra, asking for his blessings to make the film, he has now released a note charting his journey making the movie. In the note, he outlines his fears as a director in today’s day and age, how much the world of love and relationships has changed, and most
notably, his fear of failing. He mentions that in order to step out of his comfort zone, and make a film that did not lean on the beliefs he used in his first film – dramatic conflict, heightened emotions, and intense romance, he decided to shoot the film in the unknown (to him) city of Paris, with a completely foreign crew. He calls the experience “scary, but liberating,” and even bravely mentions that he is “shit scared”.

The remixed version of Saara Zamaana, which has been recently shot for the film features impressive performances by Hrithik Roshan and beauty queen Urvashi Rautela. After chartbusters like Ishq Samundar, Maahi Ve, Saki Saki and Babli Badmaash, Sanjay has filmed a reworked version of Saara Zamaana from Amitabh Bachchan’s Yaarana (1981). The director shared, “Our version is in a female voice and is picturised in the most imaginative way. Those who recall Mr. Bachchan’s outfit in the song will remember that it had light bulbs all over it. And even today when you watch it, it has that jaw-dropping effect. We’re attempting
something close. While shooting, we had booked all the lights available to create a similar impact. A huge dome was erected and Urvashi sizzled like never before.“ Producer of the film, Rakesh Roshan, on his part, believes, “The Saara Zamaana set was breathtaking. Urvashi’s grace, poise and energy lit up the set. She recreated the magic of the song effortlessly.“ The producer, who has a thing for upping the scale with whatever he attempts, adds, “Urvashi was nervous as hell to enact a song that originally features Amitabh Bachchan. However, she gave it her all. The result will blow people’s mind away. I think people will be tripping on this song through the upcoming party season.“

Do you feel there is more pressure on you playing the lead, that too as a YRF heroine? I have always felt the pressure, there is a lot of pressure that I have built for myself. There was a lot of pressure for Shuddh Desi and there is a lot of pressure now as well, so it’s not like for my debut movie there is less pressure than now. I think the pressure that I build for myself is always going to be there, which I think is a good thing because it will always keep me on my toes and work in my favour, because I will work harder for it. So, that’s the only pressure I worry about, the pressure I build for myself.
You’re being directed by Aditya Chopra, an opportunity that even the biggest female heroines would die for. How does that make you feel? I feel special and it’s a big thing for me. It’s a huge thing that has happened to me. I know that I am very new and there are a lot of other things that might happen to me, but this will always be special to me. He (Aditya Chopra) tops my wish list as a director and it makes me feel special What is it like being directed by Aditya Chopra? He is very clear in his vision. He is very clear in what he wants out of his characters. There was never any room for doubt because he would be more than happy to
answer or repeat his brief as and when required. And I never felt silly asking him the most random things, about the character, the script or any scene because he was only too happy to explain over and over again. So, I never really felt he would get impatient about me discussing it again or if he is going to judge me for asking him something very silly or minute. On set he is very efficient, very impatient, he doesn’t like to waste any time. He expects his talent to be all ready, with the lines, with the character, with the scene. He is very organic as a director. I love the fact that I got this one opportunity to work and learn so much from him, because you won’t understand the level of learning just working under his production, unless you work under him, under his direction, with

INTERVIEW that proximity where you see that man’s passion that he puts in his heart and soul in to his films and that’s quiet inspiring for me as an actor. There’s a lot of kissing in the trailer of Befikre. Do you think Indian audiences are ready for these scenes? Especially the diaspora audiences living away, families tend to watch Hindi films here in the UK, because they know they don’t have to look away when a kissing scene or nude scene comes on and can be comfortable watching films with their family. You might find that funny but yes Indian people still have that notion. In fact, it’s very funny we were just having this discussion when I was travelling in London. I was talking to someone who is born and brought up there and I was just discussing the very same thing that if this is true and that if people there feel like this, when watching a kissing scene or any such scene on screen especially in an Indian movie, to which she said there are a lot of people evolving and now the generation is such that they’re open
I feel the movie is extremely sweet and happy. It’s a really refreshing romantic comedy, so just feel light and enjoy the film. Thank you. never get offended You and Ranveer seem very comfortable with each other. Did he ever make you feel that he was the bigger star and you the newcomer? No, he never did that, he was very supportive, as an actor, as a co-actor and he really did look after me. He is quite caring and is actually a great soul. His energy is quite infectious so I never really felt like I was the newcomer. I really have to give credit to Ranveer and Adi both for making me feel an equal and not any less than them. What is the most Befikre (carefree) thing you have done in your life?
a good stride. We both have a really good love hate relationship, where I love him and he hates me at times and then he pulls these pranks on me and I start getting mad at him, but it’s all in good humour and good sense and we both respect each other and care for each other and he is a great co-actor. You’re look in the film is very different to the usual YRF heroines. We haven’t seen you in any chiffon saris for example. So, from DDLJ to Befikre the journey seems to be a move from Indian culture to western presentation. Well, the movie is set in Paris, so one cannot expect Shyra to be dressed in chiffon saris on the streets of Paris. So, it was only obvious we had to stick to the storyline and be honest to it and be more logical about it Do you think somewhere we are moving on from our conventional stories and values or is this just a reflection of the times?
Vaani Kapoor in Befikre to it. Plus, the fact that they are so used to watching Hollywood movies that it should not come as a shocker to them when they watch a ‘kissing’ scene in a Bollywood movie. I think it’s a myth, it’s not really that often that people will get offended with a kissing scene. But also in Befikre the kissing scenes are shot with so much love and warmth that you will never get offended. It’s shot so aesthetically and when you watch those scenes for what it is, in the parameters of the context you will
I have taken a trip to New York alone. That’s not the most Befikre thing people usually do in life, but for me it was the most carefree thing.
I do believe it is a reflection of the time. I don’t think as these two characters that have been played by me and Ranveer (Dharam and Shyra) that just because they are light hearted doesn’t mean that they are obnoxious, they don’t have values, they don’t have substance. But sure, it is a story about this couple who are very modern, contemporary and it’s a reflection of how today’s youth is. So, today’s generation will only be able to relate to something like this because I don’t feel that if a Dilwale Dulhaniya

happy and surrounded by only good happy people. So, every single day of the shooting is like a highlight in my life.
What have been your main highlights whilst filming Befikre?
What’s next for Vaani after Befikre?
My main highlights are the fun we have had in Paris. It was amazing. Adi and Ranveer were like the biggest strengths and the biggest assets to me in the movie. This is just a dream come true for me, to be part of such a film. Paris is such a huge highlight, we were given our own individual apartments, quite luxurious and we were right on Champs-Élysées street. The crew also made a huge difference, a big impact and played a huge role to make the film more unique and energetic and gave the film a fresher and newer energy. The entire process of shooting every single day went so well and I was so
Vaani is wondering herself. Finally, why should people go watch Befikre? Go so you can get entertained, you can feel happy you can relax. It’s December time, it’s Christmas time, it’s New Years’ time, it’s a month of celebrations. The movie is not being revealed by the trailer. The trailer is only at surface level, which has intentionally been done by the director himself. I feel the movie is extremely sweet and happy. It’s a really refreshing romantic comedy, so just feel light and enjoy the film. Thank you.
You have said in an interview that you were at the receiving end of Ranveer’s pranks. Are there any incidents you can describe where Ranveer totally embarrassed you? I mean yes, he (Ranveer) is obsessed with human faeces, but I take it in

Businessmen get proactive in helping the homeless. by FATIMA PATEL fatima@asian-standard.co.uk
There is no national figure for how many people are homeless across the UK, however according to official counts and estimates from councils across England the number of people sleeping rough on England’s streets has increased at an “unprecedented” rate last year. Charities have warned that the impact of welfare cuts and a chronic housing shortage are now taking their toll on the country’s most vulnerable.
In that time, the number of rough sleepers has more than doubled. Two local businessmen wanting to do something about this and have set up an initiative in the heart of Bradford to support the vulnerable and homeless. Bradford businessmen Saeed Younas and Abdul Satar, turned a former café in the Manningham area of Bradford into a facility to feed and offer clothing for the homeless. MPs back the Government for BREXIT by March 2017
MPs have backed the Government to formally start EU withdrawal no later than the end of March 2017. The symbolic motion, which is not legally binding, was approved by 448 votes to 75 - a majority of 373. Faced with a revolt by up to 40 Conservative MPs, Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday bowed to pressure and backed a Labour motion which said she should publish a plan before triggering Article 50. In return, most of the rebels and Labour backed a compromise Government amendment to support Mrs May's pledge to invoke Article 50 to start Brexit before 31 March 2017. MPs held two votes, with the first to add the Government amendment to the original Labour motion approved by 461 votes to 89, majority 372. Former chancellor Ken Clarke was the only Conservative to vote against it.
Whilst around 150 Labour MPs backed the Government’s amendment 23 of them opposed it, which included Ben Bradshaw, David Lammy and
former shadow chancellor Chris Leslie.
The vote followed a day of debate in which Brexit Secretary David Davis promised MPs that the Government will set out its "strategic plans" before triggering the formal process to withdraw the UK from the EU, but said it will not reveal anything which might "jeopardise our negotiating position".
was embroiled in day three of its Brexit battle at the Supreme Court.
The UK Supreme Court has since finished a historic four days of hearings on Brexit and who has the power to trigger it.
Now the 11 justices will deliberate on whether government or Parliament has that power. The judgement is expected in January.
Mr Davis faced calls from Opposition MPs and some Conservative backbenchers for the plan to be detailed enough to be subject to rigorous scrutiny in the Commons before the planned launch of negotiations under Article 50. During the debate, Mr Clarke said Mrs May's promise to reveal her plan was "extremely vague", and called for it to be set out in detail in a white paper for publication before Article 50 is invoked. But Mr Davis insisted the Government must retain "room for manoeuvre" to respond with "a high degree of agility and speed" to developments in extremely complex negotiations expected to last up to two years.
Government secures MPs backing over BREXIT timetable

Foreign secretary in hot water over Saudi Arabia comments Last thursday Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was admonished by Downing Street after it emerged he had accused Saudi Arabia of being among countries engaged in fighting “proxy wars” in the Middle East, breaking the Foreign Office’s convention of not criticising a key UK ally in the region. It’s not the first time the foreign secretary, has been accused of diplomatic gaffes by publicly criticising UK allies which some believe loses the UK allies. Johnson told a conference in Rome last week that the behaviour of Saudi Arabia, and also Iran, was a tragedy, adding that there was an absence of visionary leadership in the region that was willing to reach out across the Sunni-Shia divide. At the event, Johnson said: “There are politicians who are twisting and abusing religion and different strains of the same religion in order to further their own political objectives. That’s one of the biggest political
problems in the whole region. And the tragedy for me – and that’s why you have these proxy wars being fought the whole time in that area – is that there is not strong enough leadership in the countries themselves.” He went on to name Saudi Arabia and Iran specifically and said: “That’s why you’ve got the Saudis, Iran, everybody, moving in, and puppeteering and playing proxy wars.”
frequently been accused of regarding the civil war in Syria as a contest between a largely Sunni-led opposition and an Iranian Shia-led militia. But government ministers working alongside the Gulf states in Syria do not describe the Syrian opposition as “puppets”. The British defence industry is also heavily dependent on arms contracts with the Gulf states, and the Royal Navy has established a major naval
base in Manama, the capital of Bahrain. The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, in a speech has asked to step up the pressure on the government to do more to tackle human rights. It is believed he will back Johnson’s assessment, while also saying it is hypocritical for the government to continue with arms sales to the region.
The timing for Johnson’s criticism of Saudi Arabia coincided with Orime Minister Theresa may’s two-day return visit from the Gulf, where she lauded both the Saudi royal family for its visionary leadership, and the value of the 100-year-old alliance with the UK. Foreign Office ministers, aware of Saudi sensitivity to criticism and the strategic importance of the Gulf relationship, usually soft-pedal and focus on their path to reform. Members of the Saudi royal family, along with Qatar and Turkey, have

Liberal Democrats fined and investigated over undeclared election spend.
The Liberal Democrats have been hit with a maximum £20,000 fine by the Electoral Commission for failing to declare over 300 items of campaign spending at the general election.
An investigation was carried out by the Electoral Commission into the party’s 2015 general election campaign spending return. The investigation found that 307 payments totalling £184,676 were missing from the Liberal Democrats’ spending return without a reasonable excuse. In addition, invoices supporting 122 out of the 307 payments were missing from the return. The police have been notified and will now decide whether to investigate if a criminal offence of "knowingly or recklessly making a false declaration" has been committed.
Scotland Yard confirmed that officers were looking into the matter. A spokesman said: "Officers from the special inquiry team are currently assessing an allegation referred to the Met by the Electoral Commission."
This is not the first time a major political Party has been investigated by the Electoral Commission. Investigations into Conservative and Labour spending have also previously been carried out. Labour was hit with a £20,000 fine in October for similar missing election expenses, including more than £7,000 where two payments totalling £7,614 were missing from the party’s election return that were spent on the stone tablet. The Conservative spending meanwhile remains under intense scrutiny after a Channel 4 investigation alleged some local spending was allocated to the national account to

avoid tight limits for each constituency. About nine police forces have been investigating the accusations of higher-than-permitted spending in a number of marginal seats, which could have helped the Tories gain a majority at the election. The penalty for the Liberal Democrats is the highest that the Commission is able to impose for a single offence.
A Liberal Democrat spokesman said: "We always endeavour to ensure our reports of national campaign expenses are completed in full, in good time and according to all applicable rules. These mistakes, caused by issues with a small number of local accounting units, were a result of human error and failures of process. We are taking steps to ensure these mistakes are not repeated in future. We will co-operate fully with any investigation." The Electoral Commission is campaigning for the maximum

Tata Steel guarantees job security at Port Talbot for five years by ITRAT BASHIR itrat@asian-standard.co.uk
Tata Steel UK has on Wednesday reached an agreement with trade unions with a commitment of securing jobs at Port Talbot and other steelworks across the UK till 2021 and pledged to invest £1 billion to support steel making in the UK in the next 10 years. In return, the unions agreed on a proposal to close the British Steel Pension Scheme (BSPS) to future accrual. According to a Tata Steel UK’s spokesperson, the company will next week start consultation with its employees on a proposal to close the BSPS to future accrual. Employees would be offered a competitive defined contribution scheme. The proposal on pensions and other changes in the employment terms are part of the ongoing transformation plan that the business is undertaking. As part of today’s agreement all parties will work towards making Tata Steel UK a sustainable business. The company and trade unions have
also agreed on the principle that subject to the structural de-risking and de-linking of the BSPS fund from the business, Tata Steel UK will continue the existing blast furnace configuration in Port Talbot until 2021. Further, based on achieving the necessary financial performance and cash flows as per the transformation plan of the UK business, the company will continue to invest across the UK sites to enhance the competitive position of Tata Steel UK in the European steel industry. It has also offered an employment pact until 2021 which supports employees through future changes by investing in their skills to support further plant upgrades, automation and other digital initiatives. Koushik Chatterjee, Group Executive Director Tata Steel and Executive Director for its European business, that the agreement between Tata Steel UK and the unions marks an important step forward in the journey to develop a sustainable future for our UK steel business. According to him, the delivery of Tata Steel UK’s transformation plan and generation of free cash flows will be the key enabler for the future
sustainability of the business and they are very encouraged by the early signs of the delivery of the plan. There is much more work to be done to make Tata Steel UK more financially sustainable, but he is confident that all stakeholders will do all they can to try to ensure that the company will be able to achieve its plan in the coming months and years. “The proposed changes to future pension provision and other employment terms are necessary to de-risk the company and help achieve long-term sustainability. We are also working separately on a necessary structural solution for the BSPS fund,” Chatterjee added. He continued, “Tata Steel UK has developed a long-term investment plan to make the business more competitive in the future.” Community Union were happy with the outcome of the meeting with the Tata Steel. They said that they have secured a commitment from Tata to secure the future of jobs and production at Port Talbot and other steelworks across the UK. Also, Tata has pledged a comprehensive 10-year £1 billion investment plan to support steel making at Port Talbot and
secure the future of the downstream sites. “This proposal comes eight months after Tata announced their original intention to sell their UK steel assets,” they added. They pointed out that the move to close the BSPS will clearly of serious concern to all members. After a detailed discussion, union reps have agreed to ballot all members on the proposal in the new year. Speaking after meeting with union reps, Roy Rickhuss of Community Union said, “This proposal would secure jobs for years to come and bring serious investment not just to Port Talbot but to steelworks across the UK.” Unite’s National Officer, Tony Brady believed that it is a step in the right direction for our industry but there is still a lot more that the government can and must do. “The commitments made today by our reps must now be followed by a commitment from the government that they will hold Tata to their word and ensure jobs are protected.”

spokesperson in a statement said, “We welcome continued investment from companies around the world into the UK, particularly where that's securing growth and increasing jobs.”
It is believed that the decision was propelled by the increasing scrutiny if its tax affairs by the European Commission.
The fast food giant will create a new holding company to pay UK tax on the royalties it receives outside the US. The British exchequer could be looking at receiving a hefty amount from McDonald’s in the form corporate tax in the coming years. It
The British government welcomed the announcement. The PM’s
will also give a new dimension to the Brexit, inflow of foreign investments in to the UK. McDonald’s in statement said that they ‘selected the UK for the location of its new international holding structure because of significant number of staff based in London working on our international business, language, and connections to other markets’.
“This change has a clear business rationale in matching our corporate structure to our new functional structure. The profits of the new international holding company will be subject to UK corporation tax. McDonald’s pays a significant amount of corporate taxes. For perspective, from 2011-2015, we paid more than US $2.5 billion in corporate taxes in the EU, with an average tax rate approaching 27 percent.”

BUSINESS IN FOCUS
Global Immigration: Serving the community by MO BHANA mo@asian-standard.co.uk
Global Immigration Ltd is a family run business which was established in 2006 and is run by Jangeer Bostan and Mohammed Shabir. The business has been registered with the OISC since 2006 and started off by occupying the top floor of an office from where the client base steadily grew. The business outlook was initially to help businesses with immigration issues hence the business name started off as Business Immigration Consultants Ltd.
In 2009 the business moved to the current location with a view for better exposure and to give clients easier access. The areas of expertise increased to include leave to remain cases based on child access, dependent parent cases and European cases. Over the years, the company have built a reputation for providing honest and friendly advice based upon the best interests of clients. This is reflected in the high success rate of applications that are handled by us. The vast majority of work received is based upon referrals from previous clients and often clients are referred from multiple persons.
As time progressed, Jangeer and Shabir noticed that there was a large gap in the market for family immigration matters such as spouse visas, visitor visas, leave to remain applications, indefinite leave to remain, nationality and appeals.
Clients travel from as far as Croydon, Kent, London, Manchester and Glasgow. The nationality of clients varies from Pakistani, Indian, Chinese, Sudanese, Nigerian, Thai, Philippines, American, Australian etc but to name a few.
Therefore, the business became more focused towards these specific areas and in order to reflect this, the company name was changed to Global Immigration Ltd.
This helps us not only to understand the immigration requirements of clients but also the cultural requirements and constraints faced by clients.
Over the years, the company have built a reputation for providing honest and friendly advice based upon the best interests of clients.

Money Talk
with our finance expert
Shabab Gulfraz Is that letter, email or text from your bank fraudulent? Managing any form of finance in this day and age is hard enough with trying to juggle the credits and debits coming out of accounts and ensuring all matters are accurate, yet I bet many of us at the bank of our mind worry about banking fraud. Like many of you I receive many banking emails from dodgy looking email addresses that look official. The shocking element for me is how realistic these emails re now getting. I opened an email last week, and saw it was from Lloyds, whom I have just opened a bank account with. The email looked official, and I very nearly opened the message. When I checked the email address, it was from a Gmail account; therefore I immediately sent it to Junk and
blocked the sender. The email above could quite easily have been linked to a computer somewhere that could then cause serious financial loss if I proceeded with opening the message. You have to be careful with such emails as it could direct you to a fake bank website, which looks exactly like your banks site; therefore allowing the fraudsters to monitor you inputting your online banking details, and then effectively taking funds out of your account. I read a few years about a small business that had their security compromised in the same manner detailed above, and circa ÂŁ100, 000 went missing from their business account. The issue is the bank in
question failed to recognise this was their fault, but instead the negligence of the customer. It s surprising that remote banking fraud has increased by 25% in 2015, and cost consumers more than ÂŁ168 million last year. These statistics provided by Action Fraud are worrying because more and more of us are being pushed by our banks to go online. This is because it is cheaper for banks for people to move away from branches, hence reducing the banks base line costs whilst at the same time providing an enhanced service to the customer. Action Fraud also noted that tin most cases banks would refuse to refund customers due to the fact that the fraud has nothing to do
with them, but instead the customer was misled by a third party. Perhaps banks are being harsh with customers because lets face it its not the customers fault that someone sent them an email and they clicked through the email and then logged online. Now my view is simple I keep the bulk of my funds in cash in deposit accounts, which have no link to being accessible online. This is because I refuse to register for online banking with such accounts; therefore I feel my money is safe in this manner. I also do not get pushed by the bank to register such accounts with online banking facilities. What I would say is that internet banking is safe, its convenient and
its easy to manage current accounts via this medium; however being a cautious person who has heard of many people being the victim of banking fraud, I keep minimal funds in online banking accounts. The other caution that you could take is bank with more than one institution; therefore all your eggs are not in one basket. Overall, I would advise all of you not to bother opening any emails from your bank. I would instruct the bank to only correspond via post. This eliminates the risk and temptation of opening an email, which might appear genuine, but instead is someone trying to fleece you of your hard earned funds.

Whose goods are they? In this last year a number of wellknown high street brands, such as BHS and Austin Reed, have gone into administration. In addition to the 12,000 or so employees whose jobs are at risk there are also hundreds of suppliers who may only receive a fraction, if any, of the value of the goods which they have supplied to those two firms. That is unless their contracts of supply contain a retention of title (ROT) clause.
A ROT clause allows the seller to retain title to goods which have been delivered to a buyer until the buyer has paid for the goods in full. These clauses are designed to protect the unpaid seller against a buyer’s insolvency by giving the seller priority over other creditors in relation to the goods concerned. Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, title in goods passes to the buyer when the contracting parties intend it to pass and the seller can, as a term of the contract, reserve the right of disposal. A ROT clause in the contract is evidence that the parties did not intend for title in the goods to pass to the buyer prior to
full payment even though the goods have been delivered to the buyer.
Although a ROT clause enables the seller to recover good which have been delivered, that will only be possible if the goods are identifiable and have not been mixed or incorporated into other goods as part of a manufacturing process. Some ROT clauses contain an “all monies” clause. Whereas a simple ROT clause only prevents title passing in goods which are the subject of a particular contract, an all monies clause reserves title to the seller in respect of goods that have been supplied to the buyer by the seller in other contracts until all of the goods have been paid for. The advantage of an all monies clause is that it avoids the need for the seller to allocate the goods delivered to specific invoices as title to the goods does not pass until the buyer has paid all sums due to the seller. For a ROT clause to be effective the seller must ensure that it is incorporated into the contract between the parties and that the
hundreds of suppliers who may only receive a fraction, if any, of the value of the goods which they have supplied to those two firms. That is unless their contracts of supply contain a retention of title (ROT) clause.
buyer is contracting on the seller’s terms and conditions and not the buyer’s terms as it is highly likely that the buyer’s terms will specify that title passes upon delivery. A clause in the seller’s terms and conditions will be ineffective if the contract is based on the buyer’s terms. If the seller needs to enforce ROT clause then he needs to act promptly once he discovers that a buyer has become insolvent or insolvency appears likely.
At Blacks Solicitors we can assist with the preparation of contracts and agreements to include ROT clauses or, if appropriate, to enforce such a clause. Please contact Luke Patel on 0113 227 9316 or email him at “LPatel@LawBlacks.com”. You can also follow Luke Patel on Twitter @LukeLawBlacks

OPINION
by ALISON BELLAMY alison@asian-standard.co.uk
‘Mum ... what’s a Muslim pizza?’
The brilliant thing with kids is that they say it how it is. They are honest and straight forward.
They are also naturally accepting and, in my experience, are not prejudiced against race, religion or skin colour. Plus, they are good comedy value; most of the time. Yesterday, I could hear my daughter, aged six, shouting excitedly about the party she had just attended. It was a party at home to celebrate the birthday of her school friend Hawa.
Receiving an invitation to a birthday party always causes huge excitement for my children and although people love to hire play gyms, bouncy castles or perhaps a child entertainer dressed as a clown to ensure their precious child’s birthday celebrations go with a bang, my daughters are always delighted when the bash is in somebody’s home, just like in 1970s Britain, when I was a child. Everyone used to have their party at home with pass the parcel, a homemade cake and buns, sandwiches, fizzy pop and crisps and of course, a
drama or two, especially when girls are involved.
She had returned home carrying a bag full of sweets, chocolates and gifts and was busy telling us all about what a wonderful time she had experienced and thankfully was tired out. ‘I hope you weren’t naughty,’ I said. ‘No mum we were all good because Hawa’s granny was sitting on the sofa and we had to behave.’ She said they had played and made animals out of balloons and had lots of fun. Then out of the blue she said: ‘Mum,
what’s a Muslim pizza?’ ‘Well I don’t really know,’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ I was cringing wondering what on earth had prompted such a question, really hoping she hadn’t offended anyone at the party, especially granny on the sofa. They had eaten cheese and tomato pizza and chips for lunch. When it was served, one little girl attending had asked as she was about to eat: 'Is this a Muslim pizza?' The family, who are Muslim, burst out laughing and they all thought it was really funny, which is why my daughter was asking. Plus, she had never heard of a ‘Muslim pizza’ as I hadn’t - until now. I said to her: ‘Well, we don't have a Catholic pizza do we?’ She said: ‘Don’t be silly mummy.’ But she continued to ask about it and we spoke about how some people lead their lives in a different way, and perhaps pray to a different God, but that did not mean we cannot share our time together and have fun sometimes. So I thought this pizza analysis was really interesting and if anything, quite advanced. The six year old who asked the question had obviously noticed a difference between her own family and the home she was visiting. She had asked a question to find out more. Perhaps she was thinking about Halal food? Or worried that the pizza might be hot and spicy? They all loved the pizza anyway.
I was relieved to hear Hawa’s family were laughing about it. Of course they would, wouldn’t they? Like I explained to my girl about why the idea of a Catholic pizza is hilarious, it is just the same for Muslims. Why, we could even decorate our Catholic pizza with holy symbols just to show we eat good religious food. Might not be healthy, but at least it is ‘good’ for you. We are all different; yet all the same, so let us just cut the small talk and get on with living life to the full. There is far too much ‘political correctness’ going on for my liking. The fear of offending people with interested questions is simply that: a fear. In this case there was laughter, as genuine cohesion was taking place. I feel that perhaps we are sometimes scared to ask questions and some people have stereotypes in their mind, which are more often than not, unrealistic. Later, I asked my daughter what she thought being Muslim meant. She thought for a minute and said it means you go to the mosque or madrassah after school every night and the ladies wear headscarves. I was secretly pleased I have an observant little girl who takes an interest in other people. But I was left thinking about why would a Muslim person be offended by such a question any more than a non-Muslim? And why did I think they would be?

Sports boards 'not open' to BAME people by MO BHANA
County Cricket Club’s first ever chief executive in 1995
mo@asian-standard.co.uk
Barriers still exist for black, Asian and minority ethnic people entering sports administration, according to a grassroots sports organisation that is funded by Sport England.
"There is still a huge amount of work to be done but, for the first time, we have seen some real positive work, said Khan who was part of Warwickshire's double-winning side in 1995.
An audit by Sporting Equals has found only chairman from a minority background remains - down from two in 2015.
"One of the excuses thrown is that there is not enough talent in the BAME community but that will be addressed now.
There is only one chief executive from a BAME background, Nigel Walker at the English Institute of Sport
"This is not based around tokenism; this is on merit. We want people to have a competitive chance of getting into sport."
Furthermore, the audit found that just 26 of 601 sports board members are from a BAME background Shadow sports minister Rosena AllinKhan insists "greater representation" is required across all boardrooms in order to "increase role models." The Labour MP for Tooting added: "It is about empowering people who are already at the top of their game and those who have finished their sporting career and want to take up a position in the boardroom."
Wasim Khan
Wasim Khan was the first Britain-born Pakistani to play professional county cricket, was appointed Leicestershire
Khan said he had to "break the mould" as a youngster but said change is now taking place. For the first time, England's cricket team have four Britain-born Muslims in their side - Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid, Haseeb Hameed and Zafar Ansari. Khan added: "In terms of diversity, you can see it is starting to happen in cricket and they are leading the way. "We need to make sure more are making it into leadership positions because there are enough role models now."
Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir signs for Essex County by MO BHANA mo@asian-standard.co.uk
Essex County Cricket Club has confirmed that Pakistani left-arm seamer, Mohammad Amir is to join Essex for the second half of the 2017 season. The fast bowler, who has 140 international wickets to his name, will arrive after the ICC Champions, which is being staged in England, reaches its conclusion. Amir will be available from June 19 in both the Specsavers County Championship along with the NatWest T20 Blast. "I am very excited about becoming part of the Essex family," 24 year old Amir told Essex's official website. "Chris Silverwood and Ronnie Irani have both been very supportive over
the summer. I'm hoping I can carry on Essex's success this season and achieve more for the club in 2017." Silverwood added: "We are thrilled that Mohammad has decided to join us for half of the 2017 campaign. He showed a real desire to be a part of the club and the fact we have him for two competitions is a real bonus. "He is still only young but has proved himself at International level already, so it is a real coup to get this signing completed." Amir only returned to competitive cricket in September 2015, after he was banned for five years for spot-fixing after bowling no balls to order in the Lord's Test against England in 2010, an offence for which he was also handed a six-month prison term. Tellingly however, since returning to the international scene in January, he has established himself as a key part
Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir of the Pakistan side in all formats, taking 16 wickets in the summer tour
of England to help Pakistan come away to tie the Test series 2-2.

Haseeb Hameed returns to England for surgery with great admiration and respect man said 'Just tape it up, he'll be all right'.
by MO BHANA mo@asian-standard.co.uk
Haseeb Hameed may have signed off from his maiden test tour against India early due to injury; with the 19 year old set to have an operation to insert a metal plate in his injured hand. However, the young Lancastrian has made a significant impression on both his team-mates and his opponents, insisting he wanted to see out the entire series.
"It's a great sign. It's the sort of attitude you want. Not only can he play but it's great to see an attitude like that. We'll make sure he gets back and gets it done so he's right to go early next season." "The medical people think he probably cracked it in the second Test," Bayliss added. “He's copped another one in the same spot. It's a break that is all the way through the finger. The finger's in two pieces so it's an injury that the medical
He has impressed us all with technique, his talent and now his bravery, He has shown us he will do anything to get out there. That was a very special knock. We will hold him in huge respect for it. Alastair Cook Hameed’s attitude and demeanour has been praised by England coach, Trevor Bayliss, whilst his never say die attitude has been commended by his hero, the India Captain, Virat Kohli.
people say if he gets another knock on it, especially in the field, it could bend it right back. It's best to get it done as soon as we can.”
Hameed was desperate not to go home. He and pleaded with the medical team to tape up his injured finger and let him carry on.
So, as a 19-year-old in his third Test, he not only went out to bat with such a badly damaged finger that he knew it required surgery, but he did so with a makeshift grip.
“He wants to stay and play the last two Tests,” Bayliss said. “He wouldn't take no for an answer. He wants to stay. His old
And then he played England's best innings of the match. It was hardly surprising that Bayliss described
Haseeb Hameed
Haseeb Hameed the team as ‘in awe’ of their young colleague. “It's a hell of a skill to have,” Bayliss said. “To change the way you play to combat that. A couple of headache tablets and out he went. It is a lesson for others. There's a lot of guys in there in awe of what he's been through. The lack of showing any pain, and guts and determination is a good sign. There's plenty of other guys who have got hit and make a big song and dance about it. Obviously he's got a big pain threshold." It was also noticeable that Kohli not only applauded Hameed upon reaching his half-century in Mohali, but ran up to shake him by the hand at the end of his innings. He had, to his great credit, recognised not only an innings of class and bravery, but perhaps something of a
kindred spirit, too: this was one fine batsmen acknowledging another, albeit one who has achieved little by comparison at this stage of his career. It is a moment that is likely to console Hameed long after he has made the journey home to have surgery on his left hand. "He's showed great character for a 19-year-old," Kohli said. "He put his hand up when his team wanted him to do it and the way he played with Anderson showed great maturity. You can sense it as a captain: this guy is intelligent, this guy knows the game. "He's a great prospect for England. He's definitely going to be a future star in all forms if he keeps persisting with his skill. I'm really impressed and that's why I patted him on the back. It was an innings full of character and something that you need to applaud." They were sentiments echoed by
Alastair Cook. He has been searching for an opening partner since July 2012 and the retirement of Andrew Strauss. But the search is over. Hameed is likely to be his regular opening partner for the rest of his career. "He has impressed us all with technique, his talent and now his bravery," Cook said. "He has shown us he will do anything to get out there. That was a very special knock. We will hold him in huge respect for it." International cricket is a tough game and whilst his bravery is not in question, his habit of playing with low hands could ensure that this sort of predicament could re-occur. And despite England losing yet another test - they are safe in the knowledge that they have found a batsman who is capable of serving them well for many years.
He's a great prospect for England. He's definitely going to be a future star in all forms if he keeps persisting with his skill. I'm really impressed and that's why I patted him on the back. It was an innings full of character and something that you need to applaud. Virat Kohli

Is Jose Mourinho losing his special touch? by MO BHANA
mo@asian-standard.co.uk
When Jose Mourinho was introduced at the Manager of Manchester United Football Club, around six months ago, he would have been forgiven for thinking he had landed his dream job, for it is seldom that one gets to manage a team of such stature. However, the honeymoon period seems to be well and truly over, he has experienced a number of rather excruciating games which have seen United slip further behind the leaders, his former club, Chelsea, making for one of the club's worst starts in Premier League history. Shades of his final season at Chelsea come to mind for, Zahid Mirza of Bury. Zahid says he has lost 13 of his previous 30 league games in charge – an alarming number for one whose previous 13 losses took place after a total 119 games. “It seems as if he is imploding once again,” says Mirza. “There was a time when he could do no wrong and now look at him; he is looking more beleaguered by the day.” Manchester United fan, Zoff Makda, from Blackburn is of the opinion that Bastian Schweinsteiger’s omission from the squad for a number of weeks, only to be re-instated as a substitute against West Ham, underlines Mourinho’s tactical naivety and volatile personality.
“Mourinho has tried to freeze Schweinsteiger out, but instead of sticking to his guns, he has relented and for whatever reason, possibly due to the fact that he wants to try something new or now feels he could make a difference to an already underperforming team, sounds like he does not really have a plan in place,” said Makda. Makda also believes record signing Paul Pogba and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic have been unfairly made out to be scapegoats. “Pogba needs more freedom I think, the fact that he is playing as he is, which isn’t ideal, I think is because he does not fit into the system.
“As for Zlatan, I think he is a great player and a natural born leader, so I think Mourinho should use him more.” However, Jav Mahmood of Batley believes United have not been playing too badly, instead, he is of the opinion that the team is devoid of luck at present. “They have not played too badly, they have hit the woodwork, got the rough end of refereeing decisions and have come up against unheralded keepers playing absolute blinders,” said Mahmood. “Marcus Rashford is having one of those droughts that strikers have, while Ibrahimovic, despite his goal, is not the fox in the box needed to make the most of the promptings of Pogba, Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata. “Luck hasn't been going for them but
Jose Mourinho for a manager of his stature, to be taking refuge in misfortune hints that he may indeed be losing the plot just as his own ill-discipline undermines his demands for it from his players.” Lifelong Liverpool fan, Abdul Mayet, says Mourinho was never the Special One, he was the Only One. He believes
Jose Mourinho
Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and Chelsea’s Antonio Conte have left him chasing shadows. “No other young manager could match his charisma, however, now they are all leaving him behind – both on and off the field.
“The job was too big for David Moyes and Louis van Gaal's, but everyone thought the Special One will be able to handle it. However, his behaviour suggests he still has a lot of growing up to do to before he can handle it.”
