India comes to London at the
first India Fashion Week by Ninder Kaur India came to London this month with the launch of the first ever India Fashion Week London, and unlike the UK’s counterpart London Fashion Week, ExCel London welcomed a more vibrant colour-loving audience into its halls. India Fashion Week London is the brainchild of the same team who have successfully delivered The National Asian Wedding Show for a decade, The Platinum Group. Organiser Manny Singh said “The core motivation for India Fashion Week London is to provide a platform for world-class designers British Asian, Indian and upcoming NEWGEN designers.” For the last decade the Indian fashion industry has moved from the embryonic stage to a globally respected powerhouse. Fashion designers have contributed immensely to the spread of fashion as a driving force, both among Indian consumers and select segments of Western markets. India can now boast of dozens of leading
fashion designers, who can match any European fashion designer in their concepts, styles and designs. The UK is seemingly becoming more and more demanding as it hunts for new trends and Western-Eastern fusion designs. Fashion, a £26 billion industry in the UK alone, is waking up to the flavours and aroma of rich, indulgent South Asian demands and trends amongst British Asians, a proportion of the population whose needs to-date have been massively underrepresented in the market. The primary India Fashion Week London (IFWL) saw a host of famous and familiar faces such as Sky’ Desi Rascals reality TV stars Jo Shah and Moses Baig, Karan Tacker the Indian television actor and host noted bloggers included Ezza Khan of “Be your own shade of beautiful”, Rumena Begum and Samiz Mustak at its catwalk side. The fashion show was opened by DJ Neev Spencer and followed by Presenter Sonali Shah, both ambassadors of the
British Asian Trust who came to show their enthusiasm for the growth of Asian fashion in the UK market. Marni Kaur of BiBi London proudly took to the stage to introduce the “super-brand” lines from three designers who seem to be creating a stir in the Asian fashion industry; Payal Star guest and former Miss India Neha Dhupia Singhal, Neeta Lulla, Pavan & Pranav. All three designers pulled out their brightest shades of an Indian Summertime, with a growing trend towards mid-skirts and poncholehengas. And who else to best rock the poncho and lehenga, Bollywood beauty and Miss India Ms Neha Dhupia, exquisitely poised in Payal Singhal’s designs.

Issue 9
When asked about her preferred choice of designer Ms Dhupia said she was impressed with the selection and range of styles that BiBi London were showcasing. Ms Dhupia took to the catwalk with a black cropped poncho, the border of which was lined with detailed gold work, and a nude pink lehenga skirt. As well as Ms Dhupia, the catwalk was home to former Desi Rascal, Arshina Trivedi, and international performing artist Bambi Bains. As Ms Neha Dhupia and Marni Kaur of BiBi London closed the doors on the first night it was clearly evident that India Fashion Week London has well and truly arrived, and the excitement for the next two days of the fashion week was just insurmountable. The second day of IFW London saw Payal Singhal’s collection with low dhoti pants, lehenga-net skirts and dresses, mid skirts and rich textured outfits was a warm welcome to a chilly Saturday lunchtime at ExCel London. After London became
acquainted with Singhal’s delicate demure pastels and lace silhouettes, Noureen Dhanani’s fresh take on the traditional sari grabbed the catwalk. Her designs revealed a perfect marriage between traditional and contemporary prints and colour palettes. The catwalk was also no stranger to sporting success as Isa Guha, England Women’s Cricketer, also took to the ramp alongside reality TV star Arshina Trivedi. Isa’s commitment to IFW London looked to strengthen the partnership between IFW London and The British Asian Trust. Fellow British Asian Trust Ambassador Navin Kundra joined the second catwalk show, creating a stir with the catwalk models who joined him on the ramp as he delivered his own fusion mix of John Legend’s “All of Me” in both English and Hindi. Preceded by the unconventional designs of Mansi Malhotra, whose signature piece included a pastel purple tweed and pearl embellished “High Low” lehenga, a true fusion of British and

South Asian splendour. Followed by the colour contrasting couture designs of Shyamal & Bhumika, hot luminous pink borders on a white net sari with pastel blue blousepetticoats, rich velvet embroidered dresses and lace-net salwar kameez’s. The penultimate showcase for the evening saw Shantanu & Nikhil introduce London to figure loving, flowing outfits gracefully carve silhouettes down the catwalk. Closing the second day was Satya Paul, which saw Sonali Shah as the showstopper in an outfit co-designed by celebrity Gauri Khan titled Mata Hari, inspired by shades of the sensuous Dutch courtesan Mata Hari’s life; a sensual mix of bright tints and somber hues. Anticipation builds as the final day will see the rest of the Satya Paul collection as
well as NEWGEN fusion designers. The final day of India Fashion Week London saw a great display of Western-South Asian fusion designs. First on the ramp, designer Anushree Reddy whose designs donned subtle prints and surprising embellishments, a blend of vintage flamboyant floral fused with age old Hyderabadi zardozi. Standing out for their bursts of colours, drama, and uber glam couture. Next on the walk, Kaya Rajan’s designs draped

off the models with pride, her two-piece pleated lehenga skirts with colour contrasting bold braces and her daring use of embroidery and jewelwork over net tops left heads turning. In Rajan’s designs it is clear to see her creativity is inspired by the Indian Subcontinent artisans with influences of her British identity. The concluding designer for the first show – NEWGEN designer from the JD Institute of Fashion and Technology in India, Saloni Ruia, delighted the audience with her rich, deep floral prints elegantly adorned with lace stone embellished capes. Saloni Ruia designs are inspired by the idyllic modern day woman, who is spirited yet very elegant. The brand combines rich detail and varied fabric, overlapped in an amalgam of colours, resulting in different cuts and atypical silhouettes. IFW London was also graced with Bambi Bains running the catwalk in the second show, wearing this season’s Satya Paul, a collection which consisted of a spectrum of unique blends of crepe and georgette combined with luxe organza and Bansari silk. Bambi Bains effortlessly glided in the vibrant amber and burnt orange sunset sari. Overall there was a great parade of amber on the last day of IFW London with Neeta Lulla, one of India’s most successful and award winning designers, presenting her collection of motifs which sported Deer’s stitched in an explosion of yellow, green, amber and red
colours – exquisite and intricate. Neeta Lulla’s designs are available in the UK through BiBi London, founder Marni Kaur represented Lulla at India Fashion Week London. The JD Institute of Fashion and Technology in India once again delivered the UK creative, strong designs and aesthetic beauty in the form of NEWGEN designer Ridhi Mehra. Salwars with bite, soft pastels and poncho cape tops – elegantly designed and low maintenance when draped off the shoulders. Ridhi Mehra is a high fashion designer who brings out the history and culture of Indian ethnic garments in a very contemporary way. The closing show of IFW London brought us Spanish-South Asian fusion with Edwardian highlights. A designer representing Britain in the Asian Fashion market globally, Raishma Islam. Pioneering British Asian haute-couture, the designer has since developed a high profile repertoire of royal and

celebrity clients. Her latest collection, the Flamenco theme, is a range of fusion designs for the mainstream UK market, the showstopping outfit for the evening was modelled by Arshina Trivedi, a Vintage Rose Bridal emblazoned with gold stitch work and red roses on a cream gown. We expect big things for this UK designer who has already been invited to showcase at Doha FW, International FW in Paris and Punjab FW in Lahore. The finale which drew IFW London to a close came from ace designers Anjali & Arjun Kapoor, who launched their brand in June in the UK market. The designers showcased a range of designs from various collections, when asked about the latest collection specifically Anjali said “2016 has a lot of floral ornamentation” which was seen in a few pieces on the ramp. Anjali Kapoor is the first Indian resident designer in London, told organisers when asked about her experience at IFW London that “It was an absolutely brilliant decision, glad I’m

here and I’m here to stay!” Final show words came from Arshina Trivedi who assisted in choreographing IFW London. She said “It’s the first time Indian designers have come to London on this scale and the outcome has been incredible, all the girls love the outfits, I couldn’t pinpoint a favourite. I would 100 per cent do it all over again, it takes me back to my work in India with major fashion designers and it’s even more amazing that I’m in my hometown and country to showcase their garments.” The inaugural India Fashion Week London has concluded for 2015 but following the success of the launch, the organisers have already started planning for the 2016 show. “The 2016 will continue to build on this fantastic platform, with a whole host of world-class fusion and NEWGEN designers to come, we’re expecting big things ahead for the future of British Asian fashion.” Said Director Manny Singh

Five ways to help you drink more water How many times have you been told to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water? You know it’s good for your health and well-being, but do you actually manage to do it? Well fear not because this edition, we have searched high and low to bring you these five top tips on helping you stay hydrated.
Use your phone Yep, there’s an app for that. In fact, there are several. Try Waterlogged for iPhone or Water Your Body (for Android and iPhones). Not big on apps? Just set a few alerts on your phone throughout the day to remind yourself to hit the water cooler.
Keep it in sight or close. Let’s be real—if you’re stuck at your desk all day or on the road traveling for hours, you’re not going to make it a priority to go get water very often. The fix: Always keep a big tumbler of water on your desk or a water bottle in your bag so you have no excuse. And if you work at a desk, leave the cup in plain sight so you’re constantly reminded.
Think of the savings Make a pact to only order water at restaurants and you’ll save calories and cash. Just make sure to ask for tap instead of bottled. Most restaurants use a filtration system anyway, and you likely won’t have to pay for the cup of water. Consider it an appetizer Drinking 16 oz. (the amount in a regular water bottle) before meals can help you lose weight, according to a 2010 study in the journal Obesity. Just knowing that drinking up can help you eat less should be enough motivation to grab a glass. Make it interesting, add your own flavour. We get it, water can be pretty boring. But instead of using the flavouring agents you see in stores, opt for something more natural—like watermelon chunks and mint or orange slices. To amp up the taste even more, let it sit for a few hours in your fridge.

Ranveer Singh collapses on set
The actor is quite passionate about his work and it is obvious to say he works hard for all his films. That is the reason why despite of his ill-health, Ranveer decided to continue to shoot for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani and unfortunately he collapsed on the set. It has been reported that Ranveer Singh collapsed while shooting for the historical romance film in Wai recently. Apparently, the actor was suffering from high fever and because he didn’t want the shoot of the film to halt, he decided to shoot one of the most crucial scenes of the film. Thereafter, the actor was rushed to the hospital. This is not the first time that Ranveer has been injured on the sets of the film. He has undergone a surgery for his shoulder on April 4, after he fell off a horse.

dating after working together on The Amazing Spider-Man. It was reported in April that the pair took a break as they struggled to deal with a long-distance relationship. It seems like both are certainly busy with their acting careers. Emma has recently starred in Woody Allen’s Irrational Man, and is currently shooting La La Land with Ryan Gosling. Andrew, on the other hand, is working on Martin Scorsese’s new film Silence, after recently appearing in 99 Homes alongside Michael Shannon.
Legend Jim Hendrix’s flat will be open to the public Jimi Hendrix’s London flat is to become a tourist destination as it is opened up to the public next year. The great guitarist lived in 23 Brook Street, Mayfair from 1968 until his death in 1970. The property recently underwent a £2.4m restoration, and will be presented to the public from February 10, 2016. Tickets will go on sale from November 2. The flat is on the same row as the home of composer George Frideric Handel. Handel House Trust owns both the flats, having previously used Hendrix’s flat as an office. Chairman of the trust Alistair Stranack said: “It is hard to think of another home in the world with such a concentration of musical genius. “We hope that the opening of Jimi Hendrix’s flat will give people an added insight into the life and work of a figure whose actions have been examined no end since his death in 1970. “While it has been a pleasure to have been working in Jimi’s bedroom for the past few years, it is even more pleasing to be able to throw it open to everybody else.”

Rishi RiCh
vows we wont have to wait another 12 years for a Rishi Rish Project collaboration by Ninder Kaur Award winning producer Rishi Rish has re-collaborated with Juggy and Jay Sean and the team are back with their brand new single ‘Freak’ after a 12-year hiatus.
It’s about coming out of your shell and having fun with everything you do and enjoy life. We all live that life. We all work hard and love what we do.
The single has come about- 12 years after the smash hit Dance with You- When did you know that the timing was right?
What has the response been like?
We were never really a group. We just did songs together. There was chemistry between the three of us. Then we all went on to pursue our solo careers. It was just about finding out when our diaries were free and when we could give full commitment to the project. We tried to make it happen in London but we just went out and partied. The guys came out to Atlanta and made it happen. What is the inspiration behind ‘Freak’?
It has really kicked off everywhere around the world. Everyone appreciates the song. In India it’s doing really well. The fans love it and its more the reason we did it really, for the fans. Can we be expecting any more material from the return of the Rishi Rish project? We have started working on new material. Hopefully there should be an album or EP. We have worked on a few other tracks together. You wont have to wait another 12 years. You are the most successful Asian music producer. Why do you think
that is and what is the secret to your success? Longevity. I started my career when I was 14. I haven’t really been too concerned
about what’s happening in the industry. I keep myself to myself. I like to develop new artists. A lot of producers don’t do that.

How hard was it breaking out in the industry?
At what point in your career did you know that you had made it?
It was hard when we broke through but there was more of a connection with people. More faceto-face interaction like shop signings and a lot more performances. On our journey a lot of people were involved.
I don’t think I have ever though of ‘oh you’ve made it’. I always look at the next thing I want to do and I am very grateful for being able to do what it is I want to do. Music is my job. I have never had a job. Music has been everything since I came out of college. That for me is making it because I am doing what I love everyday. I am looking after my family and we have a great life so it is good.
Your sound is kind of emblematic of BritishAsian identity. The Urban-Desi phenomenon is something that you, partly pioneered and popularised. Did you expect it to become so big in mainstream? I always wanted it to become a sound within itself. I believed in it from day one. It was the music I have been doing since day one. I was fusing different music taking different elements from different cultures- RnB and Hip Hop with different Indian kind of influences. I wasn’t surprised. I kind of knew by looking at the ratio of Indians in clubs in London that they would listen to RnB and Hip Hop songs or an Asian guy singing in RnB but with an Indian influence. I knew our industry and our culture would embrace that and they did.
Your crossover success has allowed you to act as a representative for British-Asians and elevate the Asian scene. How does that make you feel? I feel great about being someone that younger artists can look up. I have always been the type to introduce new artists and new producers or artists that have been in the game for a little while. That’s something I love doing and guiding people the right way. You’re recognised for developing and mentoring major artists, including Jay Sean, Juggy D and H-Dhami and Dave Bawa Serena Kern. What do you
initially look for in an artist? Talent, being humble and willing to work hard and take advice. I am good at spotting talent and when I get it right its even better. Do you think there needs to be more female in the industry? Yes. There should be more females. They do get a lot of support. A lot of female radio presenters, DJs and journalist. Nothing makes aspiring females happier than seeing a new artist come out. They will have a lot of support its just finding the right artist to come through. How is it being in Atlanta and working with Teddy Riley? It’s been really good. I came out here to work for him for a year to learn and I live with him out here. I am setting up my own label now. So I am doing what I did in the UK but do it here in America for South Asian artists.

straight to the charts or billboards here which is really good way to look at it because their work ethic is a bit different. I have just signed a new artist called Amrit Dasu who is going to be a big talent. He is a young Indian guy from New York. I am working with him and Dave Bawa. I have met some really cool Asian Indian rappers. Songs have appeared in Bollywood films, how does that make you feel and can we expect more? I am working on some Bollywood songs now. Its great to be known in India and people respect the music. Every time I go out there I get a lot of love. It feels great. What’s next?
What do you think about the British Asian music industry and how does it compare to the US?
We will be touring the Rishi Rish project. I have just finished my solo album. It’s the Rishi Rish album called ‘Music’ and that should be coming out by the end of the year. There are 17 tracks on their featuring amazing artists, new artists and I am really looking forward to that.
I think the industry in the US is good. There’s so much talent here but there’s not a hub. They look at the UK a lot. A lot of people want to go
We are in talks with people to come out to London, Australia, America, Canada and everywhere as the Rishi Rish Project tour.
Quick fire round Dream Collaboration? Jay Z and Gurdas Maan. Favourite place to perform? America. Favourite genre of music? Probably 70s Bollywood. Favourite music artist right now? Chris Brown. Favourite thing about your job? I can work when I want. I am the boss. UK or US? Both. UK is my home and US is my new home. I hope to make it my home. Something we didn’t know about you? I like playing chess.

There are a lot of expectations for the film- are you at all nervous? I am not nervous because I am pretty sure that we have made an amazing film. I am just really excited for people to watch it. I hope they love the film as much as I loved making it. What makes this movie so special to all the others you have been involved in? Every film that I have done has been special. I don’t treat them as step children. This movie is just as special or even more special
just because it is my film right now. Also, the fact that I am working with Director Sooraj Barjatya and Salman Khan makes it a lot more special. I have a brilliant role in the film. To say it is more special that my other films that would be really unfair to say.
made honestly and people can connect with it, then it will do well and for me that is the most important. I honestly don’t sign films thinking that it is going to strike gold. That’s a really mercenary way of making movies and looking at art.
With it being a Diwali film release are you hoping to strike gold at the box office?
How was it playing a princess?
I don’t actually think about that. I try to do that best that I can with the character and the role I have been given. I hope people love the film. If it is film that has been
It was amazing to play a real life princess. It was a dream come true. I was a Disney princess and now I am a real life princess, so it is a good situation to constantly play a princess of one or the other, I really like it.
How easy was it to romance with Salman? It was amazing. How difficult is it to romance with the best looking and most successful and hottest guy in the industry? It was amazing. I think that eventually, if you are good at your job or successful at what you do then people will work with you. But sometimes people have a hard time understanding. I think it is an advantage and a disadvantage but its about how you take it. I think everybody has advantages and disadvantages of who they are and where they come from, you just need to look at the positive side of things.
Of course I would, but not right now.
You are known for your great style, how would you describe your style?
Who do you look up to in the film industry?
It is just a reflection of who I am.
Of course it has got to be my Dad. He is my ultimate inspiration. He is such a great role model.
Do you think that the Bollywood film industry should explore different stories?
You have won so many awards in the past for your contribution to film. How important are awards to you?
They should be open to doing all kinds of films with all types of story lines.

to win more.
The film’s soundtrack has received a massive response. Can you tell us what your favourite track is and why?

My favourite track is ‘Jalte Diya’. I love it because it is such a romantic track and it sounds romantic. It’s just so beautiful to listen to. What is the most important message in the film? It’s all about togetherness and family values. That’s the most important message you can take away from the film. Why should people watch the film? It’s just a really good, happy, positive and lovely film. There is no reason not to watch it.

Say no to
oily skin by Rupa Gill
It’s a question nearly everyone on the planet asks themselves at some point unless they are extremely lucky and blessed with amazing skin that’s never oily. (So unfair, I know) But for those of you who are fed up of your skin looking too oily, shiny and greasy then follow our simple guide.
The Do’s Wash with salicylic acid. A majority of cleansers contain salicylic acid, which penetrates into the pores, and help remove fats that clog the pores, which lead to blackheads. So washing with salicylic acid will help reduce that. Use oil-free foundations. Yes ladies. If you want to avoid creating more of a shine and potentially clogging pores, make sure your foundation is oil-free. There are plenty of products out there. Also, use a powder blush instead of a cream formula to avoid oiliness.

Use blotting paper. Washing your face during the day can be difficult, especially for women who wear makeup. Instead, dermatologists recommend using blotting paper. Blotting paper are great at absorbing the extra oil without washing your face, and they are not irritating to the skin. Paper towels can act as a substitute, but blotting paper is better because it contains a small amount of powder, which evens out skin color.
serum with anti-aging ingredients. It will work wonders and you will be well on you way to noticing a difference. Don’t over wash.
The Dont’s Don’t use creamy or milk cleansers. These types of cleansers deposit
unnecessary lipids oils on the skin, which can make you feel even oilier. That’s the last thing we need. Don’t moisturise.
Even better than searching for the perfect oil-free moisturiser is ditching this step altogether. Instead, use a gel or
What people need to understand is that oily skin isn’t a hygiene problem, so extra cleansing isn’t the answer. If you wash too much, you can strip your face of the essential oils that serve as a barrier to a lot of irritants. By doing this, you can cause your face to become red and raw. It’s better to wash twice a day and use blotting paper when you feel shiny throughout the day.

Poets Corner
There has been much debate recently on tax credits and the prospect of families losing thousands in their annual income. Poverty and homelessness concerns are increasing day by day. With food banks being the busiest as we get closer to Christmas and the long nights of winter.
So this edition, to encapsulate the feeling of many and to raise awareness of this serious issue we couldn't help but share the amazing words of Francis Duggan
If Life In The Human World We Live In - Poem by Francis Duggan
If life in the Human World we live in is in any way fair None would have to grow poorer for every new millionaire
To wilfully maim and murder their fellow kind Without terrorism and war, hunger, homelessness and poverty
And none would have to live friendless and homeless and enough food for all to eat
What a beautiful World to live in it would be
And no such a place known as Poverty Street
But due to human greed mistrust exists everywhere
In a fair World peace between former enemies would last
And no such a thing as a fair go for billions in the big World out there
And war and it's bad memories a thing of the past And former terrorists any excuse could not find
A World free of extreme poverty that leads to crime But that at least will not be in my lifetime.
Fancy yourself as a bit of a poet. Then why not share your poems with us? You never know if we like it we might print it. Email us at poems@asiansunday.co.uk
