MOST INFLUENTIAL SOUTH ASIAN MEN IN BRADFORD

The Muslim Council of Britain has ramped up calls for an enquiry into Islamophobia in the Conservative Party following a series of incidents involving members. In a letter to Tory party Chair, Brandon Lewis, Head of the MCB Harun Khan requested a genuinely independent investigation, calling it, 'the tip of the iceberg'.

The letter's contents made available to Asian Sunday states: “Upon becoming Chair of the Conservative Party, you admirably launched the Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament and local election candidates, which includes the requirement to 'encourage and foster respect and tolerance', and you have since called on people to email you if they hear of bigotry within the party. “Yet no action has been taken against Bob Blackman MP who has now shown a consistent record of endorsing Islamophobia… Mr Blackman is not the only one who has

fostered Islamophobia in your party. Just last month, there were more than weekly occurrences of Islamophobia from candidates and representatives of the Conservative Party”.

The MCB asked Mr Lewis to consider four steps, including the launch of a genuine independent inquiry, publishing a list of incidents of Islamophobia within the party where action has been instigated, as well as adopting a programme of education and training on the problem.

In response to the correspondence a Conservative spokesman said: "We take all such incidents seriously, which is why we have suspended all those who have behaved inappropriately and launched immediate investigations."

National Lottery funding win for women's centre to help families get active together Womenzone Community Centre is celebrating after being awarded £318,210 of National Lottery funding from Sport England to help low income families from Bradford East get active with their children. The project is in partnership with Karmand community centre. Four out of five primary school children do not get the recommended amount of daily exercise of 60 minutes a day, and are missing out on the benefits it brings. Children from low income families are most likely to do very little physical activity. Womenzone is one of the first projects to receive investment from a £40 million National Lottery funding pot that Sport England has dedicated to helping families get active together. The fund is a key part of Sport England’s focus on helping young people have an enjoyable experience of sport and physical activity so they develop a positive attitude towards being active at an early age and continue being active in later life.

Sport England's Director of Children and Young People Jayne Molyneux said: “It’s not right that four in five children don’t get enough exercise and are missing out on the health benefits it brings. Just by seeing their parents being active, children can be inspired to do the same, and if they have an enjoyable experience they’re far more likely to continue as an adult. “Parents have many demands on their time, and often lack the confidence to get active with their children. That’s why Sport England is working hard to make getting active with your children an easy choice. With this new National Lottery funding, Womenzone will be able to provide convenient, low cost activities to families in local spaces. Development Manager, Sadia Sajid, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment of National Lottery funding, which means we can support more

Police crackdown seize more than 30 uninsured cars More than 30 uninsured or unlicensed cars were seized by police in the Bradford West area last month. Officers from West Yorkshire Police's Bradford West neighbourhood policing team made the seizures in the area throughout the month of May. It is part of a major crackdown by local police on vehicles that do not have the correct insurance, are untaxed, or are being driven without a proper license. A spokesman for the team said: "Anyone found to be driving without insurance or a licence can expect to lose their car and end up in court."

Driver arrested following lethal police chase

A DRIVER has been arrested after their car smashed into a wall following a police chase. The chase ended when the Volkswagen Golf ploughed into a wall on Upper Seymour Street, just off Leeds Road. The driver was detained by police immediately after the crash. The front end of the car was badly damaged in the

Local ‘ringleader’admits drug dealing, carjacking and robbery has been jailed A BRADFORD “ringleader” who involved younger people in criminal activities including drug dealing, car theft and armed robbery has been jailed. Kamal Khan, 41, of Bonn Road, Heaton, admitted two counts of possession of Class A drugs with intent to supply in the city. He had been charged alongside co-accused, 22-year-old Mohammed Ikhlas Khan, who also admitted the offences. Prosecutor Steve Wood told Bradford Crown Court that police were on duty in an unmarked car in Manningham on July 12, 2016. At 6.20 around six or seven people were “milling” about in Darfield Street, at the junction with Houghton Place and were “paying attention” to passing vehicles. When a VW Golf pulled up at 6.25pm the group ran en-masse to it and were leaning into the windows on both the driver and passenger side. “An exchange seemed to be taking place,” said Mr Wood.

Car dealer and DJ locked up for conspired together to bring £2m worth of heroin from the West Midlands to Bradford A CAR dealer and a self-styled international DJ have been locked up for a total of nearly 20 years for trying to bring more than £2 million worth of heroin into West Yorkshire.

Mazhar Abbas, 44, and Scott Thompson, 49, conspired together to bring 40kg of the drug from the West Midlands to Bradford, an amount police said would have represented 200,000 typical street deals. Judge Colin Burn said the drugs would have caused “wholescale misery”, adding that he had to pass uplifted sentences due to the “sheer quantity” of the heroin involved. Prosecutor Matthew Donkin told Bradford Crown Court that on the morning of November 9 last year, Abbas and Thompson met at a garage in Bingley where the latter was given details of where to make a pick-up in Stafford.

He was given a Volvo leased by Abbas, which Mr Donkin said was a “dirty car, used for the purpose of collecting drugs.” After meeting a man in a car park, Thompson collected two large holdalls, which were in the boot of the car when he was later stopped by armed police when back in Bradford on Manchester Road. Mr Donkin said that on searching the vehicle, officers found 40 “uniform prepared packages” of drugs in each of the bags, with a total weight of 39.43kg. Experts estimated that the drugs, which had a purity level of 50 per cent, had a wholesale value of £1.2m, but a potential street value of £2,166,600.

Phone records showed that the defendants, who admitted being friends for around 15

years, had been in contact with each other as Thompson drove the heroin back to Bradford. Describing the operation, Mr Donkin said: “This was trafficking of over £2m of import-quality heroin into West Yorkshire.” Both men pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to supply heroin. Angus McDonald, mitigating for Abbas, of Lister View, Bradford, said that his client had originally planned to make the journey to collect the drugs himself, before then enlisting Thompson. He said Abbas had got involved only to pay off his £5,000 gambling debts, adding that since the drugs had been seized, the defendant had suffered

threats and violence from for offences including four counts of those behind the conspiracy. conspiracy to kidnap. The court heard that Abbas was on-licence from prison at the time of the drugs bust, having been jailed for 11 years in 2008

He was said to have been part of a torture gang who snatched and then abused men he thought were responsible for the theft of a £250,000 drugs stash in 2006.

ISLAMOPHOBIA SCANDAL INTENSIFIES FOR CONSERVATIVES

by GRAHAME ANDERSON Continued from front page....

Home Secretary Denial

Added Support

The new Home Secretary Sajid Javid speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show, denied there was a problem with Islamophobia in the party. He also claimed the MCB had associations with extremism and did not represent British Muslims.

More than 350 mosques and Muslim groups have also written to the Conservative party supporting calls for a formal enquiry. These include the Bradford Council of Mosques and the Conservative Muslim Forum, who have accused the party of a failure to take action on Islamaphobia. Its Chair, Mohammed Amin, said the party was perceived as being 'antiMuslim' and had prioritised electoral concerns rather than taking decisive action. He added: "The Conservative Muslim Forum decided unanimously that the matter was so serious that we should actually make our position known publicly." In an open letter to Theresa May, Conservative peer Lord Sheikh said Muslim voters, “cannot bring themselves to vote Conservative because they simply do not believe the Conservative party can and will support Muslims”.

His comments sparked a fierce reaction from the MCB who said: “It indicated the party had no interest in dealing with this matter. Rather than address the serious concerns raised by our message, Mr Javid has chosen to shoot the messenger.” A Two-Year Push to Be Heard Former Conservative Party Chair Lady Warsi, who has been campaigning for more than two years for such an enquiry told the BBC: "It's burying its head in the sand and now unfortunately it's playing out in a very embarrassing way, in a very public way." She's warned the Tories faced a wider institutional problem of Islamophobia if this isn't tackled. She added: “A clear process" must be set out - be it an internal

Worrying Trends The Conservative mayor of Wokingham, Peter Lucey, stood down from his position after making a number of negative social media posts about Islam and the English Defence League. A Newcastle University student and former UKIP candidate was suspended before local elections having posed Islamaphobic messages on his twitter account. There are several other clear cases of wrongdoing. Earlier this year leaders of the far-right group Britain First were jailed for a number of hate crimes against Muslims.

Everything you need to know about the Bradford BID by RAHEEMA KHAN

in its development and progress.

BUSINESS owners in Bradford city centre are being urged to attend the launch of an “ambitious and exciting” plan to give it a £2.5 million boost.

“The University of Bradford is proud to be one of the city’s major institutions and to be able to play a key role in its future development.”

The unveiling of the five-year strategy, to improve the heart of the city and help lift the fortunes of traders and service providers, for the proposed Business Improvement District is taking place on Wednesday June 27 at the Pictureville Cinema inside the National Science and Media Museum. “More than a year’s hard work and planning has gone into pulling together the Business Plan for the city centre BID,” said Ian Ward, chairman of the BID Development Group.

Bradford College is also another major supporter of the BID.

“It’s a defining moment for the project because this is when we show businesses how Fundraiser Nadeem Malik we expect to spend the millions of pounds they will invest in the city centre over the next five years.” What is the Bradford BID? The Bradford BID Development Group has been formed by a number of local business leaders, to investigate the possible creation of a Business Improvement District (BID) in Bradford. A BID is a business-led and business funded body formed to improve a defined commercial area. Most are governed by a board made up of businesses who represent the BID area. This means that businesses would have a genuine voice and would decide and direct what they want for the city. BIDs are considered to be the leading model of management and development of town and city centres, with almost 300 currently operating across the United Kingdom and it is anticipated that over £500,000 per year could be raised in Bradford to promote and add to the vitality of the city, thus increasing footfall and vibrancy across the entire city centre area. Following the result of the completion of a feasibility study, which reported at the end of 2017 that 70 per cent of those who responded were in favour of a BID going ahead, a Development Board has been established to carry the proposals forward to the ballot.

Dawn Leak, Director of Employer Responsiveness, said: “Bradford College is an integral part of Bradford both as a community and as a business. “We welcome the opportunity to be part of Bradford's future investment and we want the College to be seen as a safe, welcoming and great place to learn. “The city has a lot to offer and if the BID can make Bradford clean, safe and a The project will go to a ballot in September and the BID team have just nine months to persuade more than 600 retail, leisure and hospitality businesses, professional services companies and other firms and organisations to vote in favour of paying for a fiveyear project to breathe new life into the city centre. If they are successful, about £2.5 million will be raised to improve the safety, cleanliness, vitality and marketing of Bradford’s retail heart. Huge boost from Bradford’s Educational establishments for the BID The BID has already been given a huge boost with the backing of the city’s university. The support from the University of Bradford means the BID area will be expanded to take in much of the city’s “Learning Quarter.” Professor Brian Cantor, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, said: “We are delighted to become part of the Bradford BID Development Group and to join colleagues in playing our part in establishing a business improvement district for our city. “Bradford is a city where much is happening and being developed, and there is huge potential for the future. “The establishment of a BID will enable our businesses and major organisations, including the University, to have a strong voice in shaping this great city and to provide clear direction

lively, vibrant place to visit, shop and enjoy its long heritage, then the bid will be worth the investment that businesses put in.” Ms Leak, a member of the College’s executive team, said an effective BID would also bring benefits for students.

Ms Leak said she hoped the BID would help to encourage co-operation between businesses and other organisations. If you think the BID is a good idea for Bradford or simply want to learn more, then an official launch will be taking place at Pictureville Cinema, at the National Science and Media Museum on Wednesday 27th June at 6pm. To donate or not to donate!

Charitable spending by Muslim charities

by GRAHAME ANDERSON

From 15 May till mid-June the holy month of Ramadan will see British Muslims worshipping the third Pillar of Islam by giving away a portion of their wealth to charity. Known as 'Zakat', it's also a form of selfpurification and a chance to help the poor and needy. Muslim Beliefs Muslims believe this helps a person acknowledge everything comes from God on loan, and we do not really own anything ourselves. Freeing oneself from love of possessions, money and self-admiration is part of this, as is behaving honestly and with compassion. Zakat in essence is the systematic giving of 2.5 per cent of one's wealth each year to benefit the poor. The percentage rate only applies to cash, gold and silver, and commercial items. There are other rates for farm and mining produce, and for animals. Giving for Ramadan Ramadan is the time when percentage wealth is calculated, and Zakat is donated. But how is this done? Where does the money go and how can individuals be sure their money is genuinely helping others? In recent years we've seen an emergence of specialist Muslim charities who both accept these donations and guide individuals responsibly toward genuine causes. With charity and giving in mind however, the focus has

been on just how transparent these organisations are, and are they claiming more for expenses than for their actual charitable causes? Asian Sunday has been finding out.

Sajid Javid on BBC's Andrew Marr show denies there is an Islamophobia problem in his party.

Penny Appeal UK registered charity Penny Appeal was launched in 2009 in Bradford to provide poverty relief across Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Its goal is to offer water solutions, mass feeding, orphan care support and the provision of emergency food and medical aid. A spokesperson told me: “Penny Appeal has a 100 per cent Zakat policy, meaning every single penny of a Zakat donation will go directly to those who need it most. Other than Zakat, one of our most popular projects this year has involved selling 20,000 tins of Palestinian dates at £10 each. Aside from the £5 that goes to poor Palestinian farmers to buy the dates, a further £2.50 per tin goes to help our Love Palestine campaign. What's more, the tins turn into money boxes so people can support the campaign throughout the year. “Also, new for this year, is a dedicated campaign called WOW

which advocates for women and provides livelihood programmes as well as helping victims of domestic abuse. People can see a full list of our campaigns on our website and our accounts are available to download from the Charities Commission site too.” Their annual return for April 2017 disclosed the charity employed 118 people, also using the services of 103 volunteers and a payroll figure of £2,5996.989. In terms of spending a total of 67 per cent or £12,565,902 went on charitable activities, with £4,909,973 or 26 per cent designated to income generation and governance. A total of £1,153,173 or six per cent was retained for future use. Islamic Aid Asian Sunday understands the UK charity Islamic Aid based in London has a 100 per cent policy, meaning every penny given goes to help the poor. They say for every £1 given they spend £1.10 on their project work with poor people. They can do this because admin costs are ‘very low’ and they can reclaim the tax people have already paid on

FEATURE donations through gift aid. Islamic Aid aims to be open and transparent providing an Annual Report and Accounts along with a yearly Review.

The advice is always ensuring your donation goes to a charity who are fully transparent and offer experienced guidance.

Their annual return to the Charity Commission for 30 June 2017 disclosed charitable spending of £3,511, 298 amounting to 84 per cent. Income generation and governance totalled £283,893 or seven per cent, with £404,977 or 10 per cent retained for future use. They employed four people and 25 volunteers with wages at £17,743 Islamic Relief Worldwide Islamic Relief is an active member of several highly reputable organisations including Accountable Now, HAP International and People in Aid. It also holds consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council. A spokesperson explained: “We believe we need to be transparent about how we are spending the donations entrusted to us. We are accountable both to our beneficiaries and to donors about the work we are doing and its effectiveness. That is why we publish our annual report and audited accounts online, detailing our sources of funding and areas of expenditure. We have been highly commended by the Institute of Chartered Accounts in England and Wales for outstanding transparency and communication in our accounts. “In 2016, for every £1.00 we spent, 86 pence was directed straight to charitable programmes, with four pence going toward support or indirect costs. Seven pence generated funds to secure more “Every pound we spend on fund-raising generates an average of £5 to increase our impact. Around One pence was spent on press campaigning for policy changes aimed at benefiting poor communities, increasing self-reliance and prosperity and reducing the need for aid in the future. Two pence was spent on trading and investment. “When it comes to salaries we aim to strike a good balance between attracting capable senior staff and ensuring we deliver aid professionally and effectively. Prudent management of funds ensures as much as possible reaches our beneficiaries in poor countries. “This year we are asking our supporters to help us save lives, for the love of Allah, by giving their Zakat to Islamic Relief. Zakat has the power to transform lives and Islamic Relief utilises Zakat donations to support those facing a daily fight for survival due to poverty, disasters and conflict.” A close look at the Islamic Relief worldwide group and charity balance sheets as at 31 December 2016, revealed a total expenditure of £112,522,405 with income standing at £105,576,484. A total of 45.3 per cent of money spent was designated toward protecting life and dignity with 14.8 per cent providing access to health and water. A further 16.7 per cent was used caring for orphans and children. Muslim Aid For every £1 donated to Muslim Aid in London, newly registered with the Charity Commission, 88 pence go toward programmes with nine pence spent on fund-raising, and three pence on running costs. The charity is one of the top 20 UK relief and development agencies, alongside Christian Aid, Save the Children and Oxfam. Their main aim during this year's Ramadan however, is to raise £6million, for life-saving work with new-born babies in Gaza, drought

affected communities in Somalia and Syrian refugees. SKT Welfare Based in Birmingham and Huddersfield the charity operates in several countries around the Based in Birmingham and Huddersfield the charity operates in several countries around the world including Syria, Palestine, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Somalia and the UK. Their work concentrates on providing food and water to the homeless and refugees, as well as providing healthcare, and establishing sustainable projects. SKT has also been selling tins of dates at £10 each. A minimum of £2.75 profit is made on each tin which goes toward a particular project. The remaining £7.25 is used on the actual purchasing of the dates and packaging.

SKT released this statement to Asian Sunday saying: “SKT Welfare operate a 100 per cent donation policy. We have always been transparent that Gift Aid – the scheme which enables charities to claim an extra 25p on every £1 donated - allows us to cover the administration costs of the charity. This means every penny of the donations we receive can directly benefit those in need. “We work on a three-year cycle for gift aid, this means that gift can be claimed up to three years after the donation has been made.” Their Charity Commission accounts return for 31st December 2016 recorded

charitable spending of £3,039,886. A total of £836,908 was retained for future use. Income generated and governance saw a figure of £509,312. So, to conclude, there is no doubt that the charities listed work hard in delivering aid and use donations to support some really good causes. The question is however, are the charities making your money work the hardest it can? The answer for this for many will differ and therefore, the best way to decide who deserves your donation the most, is to look at the facts and figures and how the charity runs its operations.

By looking at the complete facts and figures, and comments from the respective charities we hope this can help you the, public, make an informed decision of whether the charity is working hard enough for your donations.

Should you require more information the Charity Commission's website holds details of charitable organisations up and down the UK, the work they do and a full set of detailed accounts, so you know exactly how your money is spent.

Privilege to represent @WhiteRibbon_UK @MosaicNetwork @SrebrenicaUK Made my parents, family & community proud . Overwhelmed with messages of support.” Women were particularly highlighted in this year’s honours list, as this year marked the 100th anniversary year of women’s suffrage. The list included a range of awards for women at the forefront of their professions or who have championed women’s rights. Akeela Ahmed was one of those women who was awarded an MBE for

her work with Muslim women. Akeela is the founder of the She Speaks, We Hear charity, which she started four years ago. The aim of the charity is to provide Muslim women an opportunity to share their story owning their own narrative, without any cultural filters. The charity is going strong with more than 3000 followers. Akeela told Asian Sunday: "I’m very proud and humbled to receive an MBE for services to Muslim women. This is an honour not only for the work I do but for the incredible Muslim women that I have had the fortune to work with. Whose voices and stories are often unheard or stereotyped. "Unfortunately British Muslim women face an intersection of challenges. So there is still much work to be done to ensure their voices are heard through campaigns and advocacy work to connect their perspectives with policy makers, statutory agencies and communities." In total 1,057 people have received an award with 920 candidates selected at BEM, MBE and OBE level: 318 at BEM, 392 at MBE and 210 at OBE

EID CELEBRATIONS

No Eidi for me Just like Christmas, Eid is one of the most looked forward to celebration in the Muslim calendar. Eid Ul Fitr is considered as small Eid and is celebrated worldwide marking the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. The fasts this year, have been close to 20 hours long and have been during hot temperatures, so for many of us Eid Ul Fitr is more looked forward to than Eid Ul Adha, which will happen in August this year. Every year before we even begin the celebrations of Eid Ul Fitr there is still the obstacle of the moon wars. The celebrations of Eid can only begin upon the sighting of the new moon and this issue has always been controversial, as some will wait to hear news from Mecca, while others will wait to hear news from other countries closest to the UK, as sighting of the new moon hasn't always been possible in the UK. These differences of opinion has often meant communities choosing to celebrate Eid on different days and has even caused tension in some households, where even families have split on which day to celebrate Eid. Nevertheless, irrespective of the difference of opinion on which day to celebrate Eid, the celebration in itself is full of love, happiness, giving and lots and lots of food. My morning normally starts with a 4am wakeup call for one of the 5 prayers, known as salah. The first salah prayer is called Faja. It's a struggle to get up, but for a believer the morning prayer is extremely rewarding. After prayer, I will make my way to the kitchen as the fragrance of the Eid kheer also known as sheerkorma, which I always let my mum prepare ,as it's one of the most traditional dishes and most looked forward to on the day, comes through. Instead of the usual toast, tea or cereal breakfast on Eid day, all

members of my family will tuck into a delicious helping of Kheer, which consists of milk, ground almonds, pistachios, coconut, cardamom, seviyan (vermicelli) and sugar to sweeten. This is enjoyed with samosas, pakoras, and other such savouries prepared specially for the occasion. Most Indian households like mine, will also have a range of bakery items, such as naankhatai, gulab jamun, ghugra and other such delicacies, which will have been prepared in bulk a few days before, to serve to guests arriving to our home to celebrate Eid.

would normally be biryani. A massive pot which will cater for around 20 people will go in the oven and a plethora of other dishes, such as tandoori chicken legs, kebabs and a sweet dish to accompany the special Eid meal. Once the Eid meal is finally ready, I will then get my chance to get dressed up in my Eid clothes. During Eid, everyone makes an effort to dress up in new clothes, from the ladies to the men to the children.

Gifts are also exchanged. When I was a child, elders gave you Eidi, (money) which you could spend as you wish (providing you It is also tradition to offer kheer didn't get given too much, which if you did parents like mine and the savouries and bakery wouldn't let you spend, but put to neighbours and relatives into savings, which I didn't closeby. appreciate then, but do now). Luke Warm Welcome for Government's Revised Counter Terrorism Strategy

by GRAHAME ANDERSON Home Secretary Sajid Javid announced plans earlier in the week for MI5 to declassify and share information on UK citizens suspected of nurturing terrorist sympathies. In his first major speech since taking over from Amber Rudd, Mr Javid said: “Last year's wave of terror attacks showed the need for wider and more local exchange of information. There must be no safe spaces for terror suspects anywhere. There has been a 'step change' in the threat to the UK, with 25 Islamist-linked plots foiled in the last five years, and four extreme right plots stopped since March 2017. “Misapprehensions around Prevent are often based on distortions. They are based on a lack of understanding about the grassroots work involved, and the efforts by civil society groups and public-sector workers to protect vulnerable people.” The first politician with a Muslim background to hold the office, argued right-wing extremists have more in common with Islamist terrorists than

As we have seen with the Prevent strategy, these new plans could also lead to inappropriate targeting of communities, and lead to further alienation we need to reduce.

they think. He added: “As a home secretary with a name like Sajid Javid, I’m everything they despise. “So, the way I see it, I must be doing something right.” Faster Information Sharing The move means MI5 will share information involving around 20,000 people who have been investigated but are not active suspects. Starting with pilots in London, the West Midlands and Greater Manchester, vital biographical data will be given to neighbourhood police, councils, the charity commission, probation service and the communities department. One of the key aims is increased and faster sharing of crucial intelligence. Retailers for example, will be required to alert MI5 and the police much quicker regarding any 'suspicious orders', such as sizeable quantities of chemicals. The authorities are anxious to see a reduction in time between the conception and execution of terror plots. Another highlight of the

Shadow Home Secretary, Diane Abbott revised strategy lays out plans for longer prison sentences for some terror-related crimes and strengthened management of offenders after they are released. Mixed Reaction Reaction to the new measures has been mixed with Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, Diane Abbott MP saying: “Tories have under-funded counter-terrorism policing and cut

police officer numbers by 21,000. leaders and the rank and file have publicly complained that cuts are undermining their ability to fight terrorism. “A properly funded police force, working with communities, counter-terror experts and MI5 that can make the difference. However, as we have seen with the Prevent strategy, these new plans could also lead to inappropriate targeting of communities, and lead to further alienation we need to reduce.”

FEATURE Funding A Key Point

services and police.

Funding seems to be key with Louise Haigh MP, Labour’s Shadow Policing Minister also critical of the government adding: “In the face of overwhelming evidence from senior officers and their own officials, it appears that the only people in the country who now believe the loss of 21,000 officers hasn’t made the blindest bit of difference to community safety is Theresa May’s Government.”

“We will continue to engage with government to ensure residents are kept safe and that local authorities can play their role in supporting and protecting communities.”

She commented after Metropolitan Police Chief Cressida Dick had told the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee, it would be 'naive' to suggest reducing the number of Police officers has had no impact. Backing the New Measures There was however, some support and advice for the home secretary's strategy from the Local Government Association, with funding again being highlighted. Chair of its Safer and Stronger Communities Board, Cllr Simon Blackburn explained: “We will be looking to work closely with the Government to ensure any new measures are effective. “Information sharing could be a positive step but what is crucial is that councils are not treated as a replacement for the expertise and resources of the security

He also pointed out work to tackle radicalisation needs to be properly funded over the long term. Dismay from Freedom Campaigners Campaign groups were far from happy at the proposals. Corey Stoughton, Liberty’s Advocacy Director told Asian Sunday: “Terrorism is a serious issue deserving serious thought. Sadly this ‘strategy’ is a regurgitation of failed thinking – heavy on sound-bites, light on substance. “The government continues to use dangerously vague definitions of extremism to tarnish communities, encourage policing by prejudice and press service providers and local authorities into becoming unwilling and untrained agents of the security services. Yet again they attack encryption and talk up data analytics, while offering no actual proposals and no explanation of how our privacy and cybersecurity will be protected. If and when they come up with something concrete, we will be scrutinising it closely.”

Important Analysis In recent times, the government vowed to offer greater transparency emphasising its anti-radicalisation programme is both voluntary and confidential. This could now be open to question by critics of the scheme. Some commentators believe Javid’s announcement might also put off people from Muslim communities offering information to the police and intelligence services. Being seen as a suspect remains a big fear, with any marginalisation making people feel they are being monitored themselves as they go about their daily business. It's a fact declassifying MI5 information will mean anyone surrendering information to the authorities can't be sure their identity will be kept secret. But the upshot seems to be more detail must be given by the Home Secretary, in order to quell the concerns of individuals and groups across the UK. The security services have already confirmed the Islamist terror threat will remain at a heightened level for at least another two years. It seems certain the ongoing counter terrorism strategy will continue to be the source of emotional debate for some time to come.

TECHNOLOGY

The new NOKIA 3.1: A solidly built phone with decent specs There was a time when Nokia phones were at the top of their game, being the most popular, and biggest brand until the popularity of smartphones took over. Nokia simply couldn’t keep up with Iphone’s and Samsung’s of this world. Now Nokia may not have made some great ripples in the industry with their recent selection of phones unveiled at the Mobile World Congress last February but their new 3.1 seems to be making all the right noises. The 2018 version of the Nokia 3 seems to be a solidly built phone with an interesting design and suitable specs. Plus, with pricing at around £150. it seems like an affordable phone. The Nokia 3.1 brings a new processor and an 18:9 display. The Nokia 3.1 is a bigger upgrade than the name suggests, with boosted internal specs, a new exterior design, and sporting a fancy tall 18:9 display. That makes the 3.1 Nokia's most affordable 18:9 smartphone yet and one of the cheapest on the

market - with a 5.2-inch HD+ display (up from the 5-inch 16:9 display of the Nokia 3), made out of 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass.

Beyond that, the phone has diamond-cut aluminium sides in contrasting colours, which has become one of Nokia's design

staples recently. You'll be able to get the Nokia 3.1 in three colours: Blue/Copper, Black/Chrome and White/Iron. When it comes to internals, the phone is powered by an octa-core MediaTek 6750, a small upgrade on last year's quad-core MediaTek MTK 6737 - though Nokia says it should deliver a 50% performance boost. You'll be able to get with either 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, or 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, though it's possible that the UK market will only get one option or the other. The camera has also had a big boost up to a 13MP sensor with auto focus (last year's model had a slightly underwhelming 8MPshooter) though the selfie camera is unchanged. Once again, the phone boasts NFC for use with Google Pay, which isn't always guaranteed at this price range, along with a headphone jack - though it sticks with the slightly old-fashioned Micro-USB charging port. There's also a slight battery boost, to 2,990mAh, along with a microSD card slot that supports up to 128GB of additional storage. The phone will ship with Android Oreo 8.0 as standard. The Nokia 3.1 will receive three years of monthly security patches and two years of OS updates. It is available in either blue/copper and black/chrome, with 2GB storage and 16 GB RAM.

FINANCIAL MATTERS

Sharia Banking Accounts

SHABAB GULFRAZ Shabab Gulfraz is our resident Finance expert. Now first and foremost I am not trying to sell to any of you a Sharia bank account or a mortgage, but put simply I want to talk to my readers this week about why you might want to consider a Sharia account. My personal view is that I like to know what I am investing in, and I actually do have a qualification in Islamic banking, and have been involved in Sharia compliant investments. The one issue that I have with investments is that they are usually more expensive that ethical investments therefore, I tend to have ethical investments; however, I am interested in the deposit accounts offered by niche deposit takers that ensure they are adhering to Sharia principles but also paying top rates of return. Gatehouse, a Sharia compliant bank has launched the first one year savings rate that hit 2 percent rate of return, and for me this is good news for savers. Gatehouse is now one of a few Sharia compliant bank accounts that is rising up independent best buy tables. You might have noticed on websites such as This is Money names such as IBB now (Al Rayan Bank) UBL, BLME offering Sharia compliant products, which consistently

seem to be in the top tier of savings rates. Now the issue with Sharia accounts in my view is that they make their life difficult by not clearly explaining what they are, how they work, and put simply why someone would want to put their hard earned funds into these accounts. In my view the basic and simplest way of explaining Sharia bank accounts is that they are not paying interest to you, but a rate of return based on a profit share. This profit share usually comes from the banks trading activities, as well as mortgage lending facilities. The reason why I like these accounts is because: •They are offering the best deposit returns, and it’s always good to have liquid assets, so for me it’s a no brainer if the rate of return is higher than other banks. As money can be returned with some banks if required by you, then you have the assuring of knowing the funds can be recovered if required before the end of the term. •The banks usually are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme; therefore the funds are safe. In most cases you have £85,000 deposit protection by the government; therefore, you have some peace of mind in

knowing if the bankwent bust your money is safe due to the UK government guarantee. •Sharia funds in my view are ethical; therefore, they tie in with me being a very active ethical investor. I like the idea of having funds in investments and deposits which are ethical, and Sharia funds for me tick this box; therefore, I like knowing that by investing in such funds my money is not used for alcohol, tobacco, arms trade etc. in the event that the bank decides to deviate away from ethical and investments under an Islamic mandate, then it is no longer compliant, and the provider would be expected to inform you the investor of this. Overall, without trying to product sell my view is that if you have savings and these savings you want best rate of return, then why would you care about how the products pays interest. You do not need to be an ethical investor/saver to access these funds, and can purely be someone who just wants best returns on their funds. I would always encourage all of you to look outside the box, but just do your homework, and make sure the deposit takers are covered by Financial Services Compensation Scheme, and double check with the scheme, if you are unsure.

To Terminate or Not To Terminate?

Times are tough for commercial tenants; some go out of business, leaving empty premises whilst others cling on, maintaining cash flow by neglecting to pay the rent. Face with a tenant on the brink of insolvency, the landlord will just want them out. Commercial leases can seldom be brought to a close quickly and termination in the usual manner is a protracted process. If a landlord wants to cut a tenancy short based on the failures of the tenant, the only real option is forfeiture. Forfeiture, in theory, allows the landlord to take the property back immediately by ‘peaceable re-entry'. The landlord simply re-enters the property, the lease ends and the landlord, if wise, changes the locks. Whilst attractive to most commercial landlords, forfeiture is a legal minefield. The right to forfeit only exists if it is a term of the lease. Most modern leases will have such a clause but leases granted informally or even orally will not. Where there is no forfeiture clause, there is no right to forfeit. Peaceable re-entry only applies to rent arrears. If the tenant’s default is a failure to repair or an unlawful subletting then the tenant must first be given notice to remedy the breach. The landlord must allow a reasonable time for the tenant to comply with the notice and

remedy the breach. The biggest problem with forfeiture is, however, the landlord waiving the right to do so. The right to forfeit arises at a specific time (as set out in the lease). At that time, the landlord must elect whether or not to exercise that right and terminate the lease. If the relevant breach is ongoing, such as subletting, then a right rises again the next day but if the breach is a one off, such as a failure to pay a specific instalment of rent, then failure to exercise the right is lost. The landlord cannot forfeit until the next missed payment. The landlord’s subsequent contact with the tenant is critical. If the landlord takes any step to confirm the ongoing nature of the lease and that is communicated to the tenant – even chasing for the last

unpaid rent - then the landlord/ tenant relationship is reaffirmed and the right for that breach to forfeit is lost. Any landlord looking to remove a tenant quickly is, therefore, advised to keep in mind any dates which the right to forfeit might arise, seek legal advice if necessary and avoid any communications with the tenant. Post forfeiture, the tenant can apply for relief from the Court, meaning that the lease is reinstated and the tenant returns but this usually involves the tenant having to remedy the breach i.e. pay the outstanding rent and often the landlord’s legal costs before the Court will consider the application. However, such reinstatement is possible and landlords with new tenants about to move in should bear that in mind.

FOOD REVIEW:

REVIEW: Bab Tooma a new kind of eatery were not over powering and with enough flavour for a filling meal.

Bab Tooma 18 Wilton Street Bradford BD5 0AX 01274 921 616 Taste: 4.5/5 Ambience: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Value for Money: 4/5

You may also want to try the Mujaddara dish, which is lentils cooked together with rice and vermicelli garnished with sauteed onions served with yoghurt and salad. It's a new mix of flavours and definitely for those who like to try out new cuisine

Bradford is surely the undisputed curry capital, but it's now fast becoming a city of gastronomy with restaurants like Bab Tooma joining the city's diverse food scene. Bab Tooma is the hard work of two Syrian friends, who came to the UK in 2012 as students to make a better life for themseleves. Qusay Amer and Eyad Charbatji are the brain childs behind this quaint an homely eatery. The first thing that draws you is the friendly welcome of the staff and the amazing little touches in the decor, which gives the place a nice middle eastern feel. The atmosphere is perfectly suited for couples and families to enjoy a great evening out. If you have never tried Syrian food before and are used to a lot of spice, then do not worry as the staff are well versed in helping you choose the dish most suited for those spicy taste buds and also have some chilli sauce at hand

The downfall for me was the option of desserts. if you are a baclava fan, you will not be disappointed as I am told by my guest the baclava is delicious. But if you are not keen on baclava your only dessert option is pistachio ice cream. to help you get your taste buds going. However, this is not a curry house, so expect authentic Syrian food, with middle eastern flavours to match. I ordered the Shish Taouk, which is a single grill consisting of one chargrilled skewer of marinated chicken cubes. It was good to see that this dish was also available in a kids sized portion in the kids menu section. So parents don't need to order one to share, but can order your 'grown' up chlld their own kids portion. While we waited, complimentary soup was served, which had a nice warm temperature and was delicious in taste. The soup I felt was also quiet filling, which for a complimentary starter was a surprise.

"It's our way of welcoming our guests to our restaurant" I am told by the waiter who served me. Anyway, it didn't take long for our mains to arrive. The presentation was spot on and the accompaniments of chips and salad was a nice touch. I wasn't really fond of the Syrian mayonnaise m but I guess that is just a taste preference. However, my chicken was deliciously succulent. Th flavours

Alternatively you can always opt for a nice arabic tea or coffee, which rally hits the spot. Overall I would say Bab Tooma is a wonderful dining experience, with clean, warm surroundings. The staff are really friendly and the food offering is different, unique and above all tasty. The best part is the pricing, which is affordable and value for money We definitely recommend you give it a try.

THE ALL-NEW BMW X5 BMW is once again setting the standard for the Sports Activity Vehicle with the new fourthgeneration X5. Combining an elegant and strong design with supreme onand off-road ability, the new X5 has an even greater blend of premium luxury performance and comfort. It’s a winning formula with previous generations selling in excess of 2.2 million examples since the first X5 launched in 1999.

On sale in the UK from June 2018, the all-new X5 demonstrates the latest BMW advances in technology, design and safety, with the highest level of autonomous capability yet seen on a BMW X model. A choice of TwinPower and M Performance petrol and diesel engines are matched to a new eightspeed Steptronic gearbox and the latest version of xDrive for maximum comfort, capability and performance. Design. The latest X5 retains the hallmark proportions of an SAV, but the paredback design language – clean surfacing and precise lines providing elegant poise and muscular authority – is new. With a wheelbase 42mm longer than its predecessor, an increase in vehicle length of 36mm, an extra 66mm of width and a 19mm increase in height, the new BMW X5 has both an imposing appearance and generous levels of space for passengers and their luggage. Distinctive design features mark out the xLine and M Sport model variants of the new X5. The xLine model adds kidney grille bars in aluminium matt, roof rails and side window surrounds in satin Aluminium, plus other accents in Pearl-effect Chrome. M Sport specification, meanwhile, sees the wheel arch trim, bumper trim, rear underguard and side skirts painted in body colour, plus extralarge air intakes at the front end, aluminium matt kidney grille bars. The roof rails, side window surrounds and other trim elements in high-gloss black flag up the dynamic potential of the SAV. The new BMW X5 comes as standard with 19-inch light-alloy wheels on the xLine model, 20-inch M star-spoke light-alloy wheels on the M Sport model and 22-inch V-spoke alloy wheels on the M Performance model. Further variants in 20 to 22-inch formats are available as options. Powertrain and driving experience. There will be one petrol and two diesel units available from the latest generation of engines. The BMW X5 M50d is powered by a six-cylinder inline diesel engine with a quartet of turbochargers, with a six-cylinder inline unit in the BMW X5 xDrive40i and BMW X5 xDrive30d. All engines channel their power through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while BMW xDrive intelligent allwheel drive is on hand to ensure that power is translated into secure progress – on or off road. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology package for the petrol engines comprises turbochargers,

High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. On the diesel side, the raft of technological measures at work includes turbochargers and common-rail direct injection with piezo injectors. The result is instantaneous pulling power and sporty performance credentials with exemplary fuel consumption and emissions. All model variants comply with the requirements of the EU6d-TEMP emissions standard. The system of emission control for the petrol engines includes a gasoline particulate filter, while the diesel models boast BMW BluePerformance technology comprising a particulate filter, an oxidation catalyst, a NOx adsorption catalyst and an SCR catalyst with AdBlue injection. The power unit fitted in the new BMW X5 xDrive40i enjoys freerevving ability and eager response. The 3.0-litre unit employs a twinscroll turbocharger and direct petrol injection technology with a maximum pressure of 350 bar. The straight-six generates its maximum output of 340hp, while the peak torque of 450Nm is available. The new BMW X5 xDrive40i completes the zero to 62mph sprint in just 5.5 seconds. Fuel consumption averages 33.2mpg and CO2 emissions are 193g/km. The performance of the new BMW X5 M50d is provided by the potent engine at work under its bonnet. From its 3.0-litre displacement the BMW M Performance model’s sixcylinder in-line unit delivers a peak output of 400hp and generates maximum torque of 760Nm.

These figures are possible thanks to a multi-stage turbocharging system composed of two high-pressure and two low-pressure turbochargers delivering over 450Nm of torque. In normal driving situations, both lowpressure turbochargers and one of the two high-pressure units are permanently active. The second high-pressure turbocharger only joins in when the engine speed tops 2,500rpm. Under hard acceleration from idle, flaps are adjusted so the pair of low-pressure turbochargers can be swiftly bypassed, thereby generating maximum charge pressure with even less delay. To boost the turbocharging system’s efficiency, exhaust gas recirculation is employed for both the high-pressure and low-pressure stages and the common-rail direct injection system capable of generating pressures in excess of 2,500 bar. The new BMW X5 M50d darts to 62mph from rest in 5.2 seconds yet it succeeds in posting a combined fuel consumption of 41.5mpg and CO2emissions of 179g/ km. The new BMW X5 xDrive30d is also powered by a straight-six diesel engine, this time with displacement of 3.0 litres and featuring a single turbocharger with variable inlet geometry. The common-rail direct injection system propels fuel into the combustion chambers at up to 2,500 bar. Maximum output of 265hp, while offering 620Nm of torque. Capable of reaching the 62mph mark from rest in 6.5 seconds, the new X5 xDrive30d returns combined fuel consumption of just 470mpg, equating to CO2 emissions of 158g/ km.

All of the engines available for the new BMW X5 come with a new, improved version of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, whose wider ratio spread and new control electronics help to increase the powertrain’s overall efficiency. New torsion dampers reduce rotational irregularities and converter slip for superior shift comfort, while optimised hydraulic control enables even sportier gear shifts. Efficiency-enhanced xDrive all-wheel drive. The task of maximising traction, agility and directional stability in the new BMW X5 falls to the latest generation of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which is now able to split drive torque between the front and rear wheels with even greater precision and speed on demand. The new xDrive system also offers a rear-biased set-up for those occasions when the driver adopts a particularly dynamic approach. The electronically controlled rear differential lock (available on M Performance models and/or in conjunction with the Off-Road package) gives the handling an even sportier edge. Governed by the Driving Stability Control (DSC) system, the locking function for the rear differential improves traction and power transmission when driving over loose ground or on road surfaces offering differing levels of grip for the left-rear and right-rear wheels. The locking effect is produced by means of an electric motor and allows as much as 1,500Nm of drive torque to be redirected from the faster-turning wheel to the slowerturning wheel.

What is Bradford BID and why should Business owners attend the launch on June 27? BUSINESS owners in Bradford city centre are being urged to attend the launch of an “ambitious and exciting” plan to give it a £2.5 million boost. “It’s a defining moment for the project because this is when we show businesses how we expect to spend the millions of pounds they will invest in the city centre over the next five years.” What is the Bradford BID?

The project will go to a ballot in September and the BID team have just nine months to persuade more than 600 retail, leisure and hospitality businesses, professional services companies and other firms and organisations to vote in

favour of paying for a five-year project to breathe new life into the city centre. If they are successful, about £2.5 million will be raised to improve the safety, cleanliness, vitality and marketing of Bradford’s retail heart. Huge boost from Bradford’s Educational establishments for the BID

The BID has already been given a huge boost with the backing of the city’s university. The support from the University of Bradford means the BID area will be expanded to take in much of the city’s “Learning Quarter.” Bradford College is also another major supporter of the BID.

BID can make Bradford clean, safe and a lively, vibrant place to visit, shop and enjoy its long heritage, then the bid will be worth the investment that businesses put in.” Ms Leak, a member of the College’s executive team, said an effective BID would also bring benefits for students.Further development of ideas. The BID’s development board have been meeting up to discuss ideas, such as cleaning up the city centre.

Jonny Noble, Bradford’s city centre manager said: “It’s really important to remember that the BID will not be here to do the job that the Council is already doing. The local authority has to provide a certain level of service and will be committed to continuing to do so in a legally-binding agreement. Dawn Leak, Director of Employer “So, what we have been doing is working Responsiveness, said: “Bradford College is an integral part of Bradford out what the BID can bring that is over and above the basic cleaning that the both as a community and as a streets already receive.” business. If you think the BID is a good idea for Bradford or simply want to learn more, “We welcome the opportunity to be part of Bradford’s future investment then an official launch will be taking and we want the College to be seen as place at Pictureville Cinema, at the a safe, welcoming and great place to National Science and Media Museum on Wednesday 27th June at 6pm. learn. “The city has a lot to offer and if the
