CENTRAL THAILAND

From the modernity of Bangkok’s futuristic skyscrapers to the ruins of an ancient former capital, the central region is an area of vast contrasts. From 1350, Ayutthaya was the kingdom’s capital, attracting traders from afar. This commercial wealth funded magnificent palaces and temples set on a 4 km-wide island at the confluence of three rivers – the ruins of which can be seen today. In 1782, Bangkok’s strategic position gained it the status of the nation’s capital. It has grown into a high-powered metropolis where East meets West, with gleaming glass

skyscrapers towering over traditional shop houses. For those seeking natural wonders, Kanchanaburi in the West offers exploration of dense jungles, cascading waterfalls and mysterious limestone caves, all within easy reach of Bangkok. For sun, sand and party fun, Pattaya has grown from a small fishing village into one of the country’s leading beach resort destinations, with abundant luxury hotels, bars, nightclubs and restaurants.

Besides ease of access, this is one of the kingdom’s most authentic floating markets – this small village dates back to the 17th century. The main draw is the delicious seafood grilled on wooden boats moored around the famous central bridge.
