FLOWER TO THE PEOPLE: ‘Ever since I was little I imagined walking down the aisle clutching the prettiest bouquet, but apparently boys don’t do that sort of thing. I’m getting kitted out by the fabulous Sati Thakar, who also suggested that maybe the world isn’t ready for the f loral sherwani I had in mind. So I’m living out my f loral fantasies by making my groomswear wear corsages made especially by the lovely bunch at quincebrighton.com and they will love me for it.’ SHIHAB SALIM, Guest Editor

Editor’s Letter

Fashionably KAYAKOKE: ‘Someone put the word kayak and karaoke together and thought – I know! Our friend Priya went kayakoking down the Thames for her hen. Sing your heart out and get fit while you’re at it... love it!’ Nipa Patel, HR & Finance Controller

BUY, BUY, CASTLE : ‘I’ve been researching venues for this issue and have become obsessed with getting married in a castle. Lulworth Castle will do nicely, thanks. Sort it out, Prince Charming!’ SAMAR SADULLAH, Editorial Assistant

I

GREAT

f there’s one thing that unites the female of the species when it comes to weddings it’s that one thought that enters her head whether a wedding invite arrives through her letterbox or a diamond ring arrives on her finger.... ‘What am I going to wear?’. The keen fashion spies at Asian Bride have made it their personal mission to help answer that question for you, trawling the country for the finest garments, Indian and Pakistani catwalk couture to the best of British designs. If you had more trouble than usual finding this page, that’s why! Magnificent voluminous dresses - check. Intricately embroidered suits check. Velvet lenghas, slinky saris, Great Gatsby gowns - check, check, check. It’s all here. Whoever said less is more clearly never had the pleasure of attending an Asian wedding, if they had they would know, categorically that in fact more is most definitely more. And so we too in the spirit of the season have gone for more.

KEEP ON ROARING: ‘I predicted two issues ago the art deco look would be big this year, and if I had a drink for every bride now asking me for the Great Gatsby look, I’d have a garden! Loving the drama, ladies!’ baroquejewellery.com NINA UBHI, Beauty Editor

JAR PAVILIONS: ‘After seeing one too many elaborate f loral centrepieces, I’m now a huge fan of seeing arrangements in simple but cute recepticles, like mason jars or tea pots’ JASPREET KUNDI, Customer Services

In fact we were so spoilt for choice this issue with more cutting edgefashion, stunning beauty looks, innovative ideas, awe-inspiring decor and industry-expert advice than ever before that we’ve expanded your favourite wedding magazine this issue to give you even more bridal for your buck.

MEET YOUR MATCH: ‘While I’d never suggest the groom risks outshining the bride, I am loving the trend of the happy couple combining elaborate designs and daring colours to look like two halves of the complete article. I’m a big fan of this look by Pakistani designer Rana Noman J WIMAL, Editor-in-Chief

As if that wasn’t enough to inspire and guide you we’ve also launched the fantastic asianbride.me website and just like you, we’re putting the finishing touches on planning our own big event later this year - the ultimate wedding show - Asian Bride Live!

J Wimal Editor-in-Chief

Exciting times. I’ve barely been able to move around the office without being confronted with fabulousness at every turn. Have a wonderful wedding season.

BRAND OF GOLD: ‘I don’t usually go for engravings, but these cheeky little rings from baroquejewellery.com are just too cute’ RACHAEL ELLIOTT, Features Co-ordinator

HEAD’S UP: ‘Fascinators rarely go well with traditional Asian bridalwear, but the new range by Vetas Jewellers may well be the one to buck that trend’ SIOBHAN KERRIGAN, Fashion Assistant

What to ask the

Events M anager

Photography: Barry Jeffery | Makeup: Nina Ubhi, theasianwomanacademy.com | Outfits: Ref lections Bridal | Jewellery: NK Collection | Location: The VIP Lounge | Creative Direction: J Wimal | Image Editing: Kasum Shaffi

One of London’s leading banqueting venues, The VIP Lounge covers all areas of in-house services, from stunning décor to exquisite cuisines. Here’s what to ask Sukhraj Singh Bhamra, Head of Events Management... How do you go about selecting the right Events Manager? Many establishments have glitzy adverts, name in lights and so on, but the best way to find out about an organisation is through good old-fashioned word of mouth. If somebody you trust recommends a service that they have experienced, then that’s already 50% of your search done. What are the key services you expect your service provider to offer? We offer an all-inclusive service at The VIP Lounge, making the happy couples day as stress-free as possible – from providing the venue, to bespoke catering and décor options. We also have great relationships with photographers, videographers and cake providers and so on, meaning we can secure special rates for our clients.

Is it okay to haggle? Absolutely! If you don’t ask you don’t get. Do you have a back-up plan if the vendor lets you down on the day? This can be a problem when booking separate suppliers. You spend a healthy time of your big day chasing up various suppliers who may be running late or got lost on the way. This is why we always encourage our clients to go with as much of an all-inclusive service as possible as it eliminates this headache.

What personality traits are important? Trust – to handle your special day with the utmost respect, care and super organisation. You’ve spent years planning your big day in your head, you need to be assured that this person you’re handing the responsibility of bringing your dream to reality understands that vision completely.

What extras would you happily pay for? I’m a huge fan of the star cloth for wedding receptions, I think they completely transform any venue and offer the ultimate party atmosphere. Lighting is also very important, generating the right ambience could be the difference between a good and a great function. However, catering has to be number one. At the end of the day you could have an amazing venue, mind blowing décor and have bhangra legends Alaap performing on stage – but if the catering isn’t up to par then that is what everybody will remember.

How many vendors do you see? There’s nothing wrong with keep going until you’re comfortable with the establishment you want to go with. Personally, once I’m sold on a service I don’t look elsewhere because that’s where my heart is set. Having said that, everybody is different and if they feel more comfortable shopping around before coming back then that just shows us our services are definitely a cut above the rest.

If money was no issue, what are the extravagant things you’d ask to have included in your day? How about a stage performance from Priyanka Chopra & Shah Rukh Khan? And if they’re not available, how does chartering a first class flight for all your family and friends to a remote, secluded, luxury all inclusive, beach resort for a week of partying, celebrations and festivities sound?

What are the key questions you ask before you sign on the dotted line? It’s important to know the full extent of the services you’re getting. The worst thing is to be told something but not to receive it on the day due to the small print. Be sure to fully understand what is included within your package and what ‘extras’ you might occur later!

If the budget was tight, what are the things you would decide to do without? The first class chartered flight! Apart from that, maybe things like chair covers & bows, perhaps a slightly smaller menu choice (but still having great quality catering). Instead of going for the star cloth, you could have up-lighting to create the right ambience.

Name a way vendors can rip you off? They don’t turn up on the day. Apart from that, I’d like to think all suppliers in this industry are honest with their pricing and services. What new trend are you excited about? Nowadays wedding trends are like apps and upgrades – there’s something new every other week that you want, which means there is a lot to get excited about for the new wedding season. For me, the latest funky table décor available can make your event stand out and there are loads of new designs, but always do your research thoroughly. Latest doesn’t always mean greatest. Stick our oar in or leave it to the professionals – how involved should you as the client get? Every client is different. Some are open to various ideas whereas others want things done in a certain way and nothing else will do. So I think it’s fair to say we adapt to our clients requirements, and if I feel my input would enhance their function in a certain way then I don’t hold back in giving my opinion. But it’s not enforced on them, at the end of the day it’s their big day and it’s my job to deliver them their perfect function. theviplounge.com

Celeb choice

THE ROARING 20s trend is making us put aside our ‘Queen in her castle’ fantasies in favour of playing the role of the lady of the mansion – in a manor of speaking.

Which stately home tops our Good Manors list?

Our research found that manor houses and grade II listed buildings have replaced the banqueting suite as the type of venues most commonly being booked by Asian brides. Samar Sadullah, who has been monitoring the spending practices of brides for a bridal trend assessment due to be featured in asianbride.me later on in the year, puts down the trend on the popularity of shows such as Downton Abbey and films like Great Gatsby. Samar commented: “Asian weddings are becoming more intimate, which means the obvious choice is no longer the biggest hall in town. But we still like our venue to be vast – and the manicured grounds that surround the quaint manor house is perfectly suited to our tastes.” Stately homes have become a popular option because many now allow outside catering, the research also found. HITE EDDING

Admit it. In a lot of those childhood wedding fantasies, you pictured yourself not in a bright red sari or lengha, but in a long flowing gown! You’re not alone. Many Asian brides are going for white for their registry ceremonies. You don’t have to know the difference between the mermaid and the empire wedding gown, but it certainly helps to know what’s on-trend to be sure it’ll turn out all white on the night...

TEXTURE ONESHOULDER

The strapless gown still reigns, but we love the snaking oneshoulder strap of this elegant fishtail gown. sassiholford.com

Whilst satin remains the popular choice, texture is the one for the classical bride. The ruffles of this dress will look stunning alongside jewellery and hair style set in sheer simplicity. debenhams.com

LACE

Always the epitome of elegance, lace is still one of the biggest trends this season. This Sabina Motasem floor-length gown will make you look and feel like you’re walking on air. motasem.co.uk

SLEEVES

The demure trend sparked by Kate Middleton and Downton Abbey, has seen the retro bride opt for gowns with lace sleeves and high necklines. Delicate, modest, and always sleek. monsoon.co.uk

Registry: 9 September 2012 Venue: Stoke Park Golf Club Ceremony & reception: 14 September 2012 Held at home & The Grosvenor Hotel, London Photography: EYE Jogia (eyejogia.com)

GINA & AMAN THE LOVE STORY How did the two of you meet? We met through a mutual friend – proof that blind dates do sometimes work out. Although, it’s a miracle things turned out how they did – his first impression of me wasn’t of me at all. He mistook a different girl for me... I told him I’d be wearing a white dress, and he the girl he first saw in the white dress was pushing a pram! How did he propose? Aman took me on a tour of his old college at Oxford University, and proposed to me in his master’s garden. It was an incredibly symbolic setting.

THE SETTING How did you choose your venue? Both Stoke Park and Grosvenor Hotel had the right mix of space and sophistication, but our favourite setting ending up being home sweet home.

THE LOOK Talk us through your outfits... You can’t go wrong with a Sabyasachi for the traditional wedding in red and green with gold embroidery and a classic white gown from Ian Stuart for the registry.

THE THEME Talk us through your vision... For the reception we went for a Rio Carnival feel with a touch of Indian for

the theme. It was beautiful and colourful - everything a girl could dream of for her special day.

THE DETAIL What were your favourite little touches? I loved everything – from the flowers all around to the chandelier above. Every time I looked around I saw scenes bathed with colour and laughter. Seeing everyone dressed up was a constant reminder that this day was as special for our loved ones as it was for us. It’s always the little things, isn’t it? Like my brother Vivek adding little touches I would have never thought of, like getting us a Bhangra Bot (bhangra robot). The food was superb all round, but special mention has to go to the chocolate covered strawberry canapés.

“Everywhere I looked I saw scenes bathed

with colour and laughter. It made me realise this was special for everyone”

THE ARRIVAL How did you make your grand entrance? For both the Sikh wedding and registry I arrived with my cousin, sister and friends and at the reception I came with my new husband, flanked by amazing dhol players. We were lucky on the day of the registry that it was a beautiful summers day.

THE FEELING Share your happy tears moments… Every time I looked at Aman, I felt like I was in a some surreal dream. There were hardly any tears. I just felt sweet all over – like a chocolate covered strawbery...

THE MEMORIES My favourite moment had to be when Aman arranged a dance with his family to all of my favourite Bollywood songs. This is a man who’d never heard a Bollywood song or seen a Bollywood movie! Although our honeymoon in Amanusa in Bali will always be up there in the list of best memories ever made...
