A catfight, flirting with the best man, and dirty dancing with uncles… just another wedding party for R n Desouza

t’s 7.30am on a Saturday morning and I’m in a taxi heading to a semi-detached in Neasden. I am a bridesmaid for a friend once again and I’m on my way to her house to be preened, polished and shoe-horned into my dress. The shrieks of laughter beyond her door signals the drink is already in full flow. Much like a conveyor belt on a factory production line, the bridal party dutifully assembles to take turns having their make-up and hair done and then their beautiful fuchsia dresses put on. Once primed and complete with bouquets in hand, we are ready to leave for the venue in a Mercedes dazzling enough to give the sun a complex. After a beautiful and moving marriage ceremony, it’s time to unwind and get the party started. The cars pull up at the obligatory plush London hotel and we enter the building feeling every bit the celebrities walking the red carpet at their latest film

premiere. Once I get my feet under the crisp white linen tables, it’s time to cut loose and start chugging on the endless supply of alcohol dotted around the vast ballroom. I offer everyone a lipstick tainting white wine smile: ‘I haven’t eaten much and that’s why the alcohol has made me tipsy’, is my way of explaining why I’m so rubbish at drinking. I start to reminisce about my youthful clubbing days and about boyfriends past, whilst the best man rambles on about drunken boys’ holidays in Prague and tells risqué stories about the groom’s exes (surely he knows not to anger a bride with a cake knife in her hand). As I sit through an endless stream of eye-watering speeches (both through sentimentality and boredom), I learn almost every minute detail of the bride and groom’s life. They once considered adopting a panda. Who knew? After a few glasses of bubbly, the dancefloor looks evermore appealing. I grab my fellow bridesmaids and we make a beeline for the large strobe-lit mass in the centre of the room just in time to hear the rousing lyrics of Laung Ka Lashkara. The music is like an audition call for Strictly Come Dancing: The Rejects as drunken, swaying guests take to the floor with hilarious results. I’m barricaded between two eager older gentlemen dirty dancing to Sex On Fire – wrong! Oh good, the mandatory bhangra dance. No, ‘uncle’, you’re meant to screw lightbulbs, not try to screw me... I find a safe place between a friend and her mother. I finally manage to squeeze my way out of the scrum that has occurred on the dancefloor to be greeted by the bride who tells me to gather all the single girls together for the bouquet catching (a concocted tradition to remind us singletons just

how desperate we are). I’m determined to catch it this time, this is finally my chance to live happily ever after and no one is going to get in my way dammit! I assume the position. Put my arms out and get ready. The bride, who never did have a good aim, throws like a five-year-old girl and I see the bouquet hurtle to my right. Like an SAS soldier protecting a dignitary, I dive in the direction of the bouquet and in doing so sprawl my arms out and whack the girl next to me squarely in the face. The horror. I apologise, my friend picks up the bouquet. Missed out again! Later, the girl I injured at Bouquet-Gate appears to be nursing a black eye. I try to convince myself maybe she just likes heavy mascara. I console myself with a big slice of wedding cake. It’s at this precise moment (my upper lip has a fine line of white icing sugar, not dissimilar to a certain illegal substance) the best man – the very married best man – decides to make small talk with me. Fuelled by alcohol and vanilla sponge cake, I decide to display my awesome flirting skills. As I mumble seductively, more J-No than J-Lo, and run my fingers along his arm, he has the look of a confused dad whose child has just told him they want to give up their banking career to be an acrobat. With my flirtation attempts failing miserably, the conversation descends to such alluring topics as hayfever and shoes for his toddler. Game over. Adding insult to injury, the powers-that-be figure I need some cheering up and decide to give me a consolation prize in the form of one of the uncles, think John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever meets Howard from the Halifax adverts, asking me out on a date. I try to be subtle and tell him that I have a busy schedule for the rest of my life, but he’s having none of it. I eventually give him my number. I should ring and tell Ming’s Chinese takeaway that they’ll be getting an odd call shortly. As the party winds down in the early hours, I manage to stumble to the cloakroom and literally crash into the bride’s Mum, wonder if she can tell I’m slightly drunk? I mumble something about ‘not eating much and so the alcohol has gone straight to my head’. She looks at me as if to say, ‘maybe if you showed some self control, you would be married by now’. Miserably, I find myself nodding in agreement… AB

of designers in the area, Arinder isn’t afraid to deviate from tradition. Fusion isn’t simply a fancy word for ripping off western ideas – in fact, Arinder thrives on keeping her designs uniquivocally Asian, with an inimitable knack for experimentation that exceeds the usual mixing of traditional beading with modern silhouettes. She reveals: ‘When I think of dressing an Asian bride, I take her entire outlook into consideration – for instance, at the moment I am adding veils to contemporary and traditional outfits as they are easy to handle and are not heavily embellished, thus giving the bride a more comfortable feel for the day.’ In fact, at her own wedding, the avant-garde designer opted for ‘very light and comfortable salwar kameez with little embellishment’, because she believes a designer’s job is to create masterpieces that can actually be worn rather than only marvelled at on the catwalk. The Arinder Bhullar mantra has always been to provide unique, eye-catching British Asian couture for a clientele who want something different, stylish and sophisticated, a drive justly rewarded by being hailed 2010’s Best Wedding Designer at the International Asian Fashion Awards. Become a flawless yet natural bride with a little help from myface.cosmetics By Nina Ubhi

I used Mymix foundation in med/dark 01 £12.99 as the base with a foundation brush. Concealer in med/dark 01 £7.99 was used in a dabbing motion with the tip of my finger over the eyelids to work as an eye primer. The forehead and eyes were set by pressing Myface powder in med/dark £10.49 into the skin with a large powder brush. I applied Blingtone eyeshadow in Diamonds & Pearls £9.99 on inner corners of eyes and on the brow bone to lift and open up the eye area. Eyebrows were defined and shaded with a matte brown eyeshadow using a flat angled brush for a natural finish.

Step 2 Next I applied The Eyeshadow Trio in Midnight Hour £9.99 (one of my favourites for a washed smokey look!) using the flat side of my eyeshadow brush by pressing the colour onto the lids to create a filled in semi circle keeping with the socket line and no further out than the end of the lash line. I then used a clean eyeshadow brush and blended the colour inwards (you will find that colour naturally spreads out even when blending inwards) in small movements wherever I saw any harsh lines.

Step 3 I finished off with Myface Upload Mascara £10.49 in Black then added a strip of natural looking false lashes to upper lashes for more depth.

Step 4 With Myface eyeliner pencil in Black £6.99, I drew a thin line on the lower lash line as close to lashes as possible, then softened the line with a cotton bud.

Step 5 I then used a facial wet wipe wrapped around my finger to lift off any eyeshadow spillage below the eyes before applying the concealer in a dabbing motion to cover dark circles and blemishes. Using a big powder brush I

pressed the powder into the skin from below the eyes downwards to set the rest of the face. To complete the look I sculpted cheekbones very lightly with Sul‘tan’ of Swing Blusher £9.99. A slick of Myface Gigabite Lipstick in ‘Downtown’ finishes this smokey and sophisticated bride.

1. I used MyMix Foundation Medium 02 £12.99 as the foundation base. For a matte effect I pressed Myface Powder in Medium £10.49 into the skin with a powder puff. 2. With a coarse flat angled brush, shade and define brows with Myface High Def Eye Pencil in Brown £6.99, use the brush to take the product from the tip of the pencil. 3. I covered the eyelid with a wash of Blingtone Black Ice £9.99 and blended the edges into inner corners of eyes and out towards temples

for feline eyes. With High Def Eye Pencil in Black I defined the eyes on the upper and lower lash line and smudged the line with a cotton bud, finishing with Upload Mascara in Black £10.49 and some false lashes for extra glamour. I applied Blingtone in Gilt-y £9.99 to the inner corners of eyes going towards the lower inner lash line. 4. Lastly I outlined lips with High Def Lip Pencil in Brick £6.49 and filled in with Gigabite Lipstick in Karmic Kiss £9.99 mixed with some Gigabite Lipstick in Cherry Bomb.

Myface mymix foundation for med/dark skin has made a permanent place in my kit! Mainly due to the face that my brides absolutely love the foundations as they give great flawless coverage yet feel so light on the skin. I love their foundations and concealers as I can create anything from a dewy look to full coverage for brides, and the colours are perfect for our skin tone which eliminates the ashy undertone some of us have. Some foundation brands on the market have ‘too’ much of a yellow undertone and are a bit too thick in consistency which can end up caking later in the day with a less-than-convincing mask effect.
