It’s no secret that golf has been on the decline or at least in a holding pattern for some time. While many in the industry have been aware of this languid state, the powers that be in the business of golf have shied away from admitting the fact. Turning to PR-speak, the governing bodies of golf on both sides of the Atlantic have been pontificating that golf is in good health and that steps were underway to grow the game and all that frivolous talk!

Using this as a basis, the Asia Pacific Golf Summit (APGS) is now in its second decade and with the latest edition, it will have had 12 successful stagings since it was started back in 2007. Over the years, APGS has been staged in Singapore, Shenzhen (China), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Bangkok, Pattaya (Thailand), Jakarta (Indonesia), Hua Hin (Thailand) and Da Nang (Vietnam). The longest running summit on the business of golf in Asia now returns to Bangkok for 2018. Every year since its inception, APGS has always set standards and new milestones and 2018 will be no different. Everything points to APGS 2018 scaling new heights and establishing new standards. The countdown to APGS 2018 has commenced and it’s time to roll out what’s in store. As is customary for APGS, each new Summit is launched with the announcement of a globally renowned personality being brought on board. This year is no exception – the special VIP guest at APGS 2018 is the legendary golf equipment entrepreneur Barney Adams. He was the man who gave golf the history-making Adams Golf and its equally famous “Tight Lies” golf clubs.
“A
ny man who could take over a golf equipment company faced with the threat of bankruptcy and turn it around into a US$85 million force has got to be special and Barney is that sort of a man,” said Mike Sebastian, chief executive officer of the Asia Pacific Golf Group, the owner and
producer of APGS 2018. “We have invited Barney because he is a perfect example of how somebody recognised an opportunity, seized it and engaged with it to deliver a total game changing experience for golfers the world over,” Sebastian pointed out. The mainstay of Adams Golf was to provide a very special service to golfers and that service was to design and manufacture golf clubs that would get golf balls to go the distance. Looking back to the early days of Adams Golf, Barney said, “My job was to improve the flight of the golf ball and provide optimum ball flight and I applied everything I knew to develop clubs that hit well and felt good in the hands of a player.”

Service excellence will be part and parcel of the theme for APGS 2018 and to help deliver this important message, the organisers have reached out to one man who has been the embodiment of this practice for almost all of his professional life. June was a historic month for global diplomacy with the President Donald Trump brokered summit in Singapore to help create a pathway to end the decades long impasse with the rogue North Korean regime led by the youthful 34-year old Chairman Kim Jong Un. After months of mud-slinging and name calling, the two leaders met in Singapore to work out their differences in the hope of starting a new relationship founded on peace and progress.
Although both sides have made compelling statements of working towards a new era of hope and development, it is still early days to offer up anything that is concrete especially considering the past mercurial behaviour of the unpredictable North Korean leader. However, there are enough reasons to believe that the charismatic deal-maker President Trump will make things work after the decades long stand-off between America and the hermit kingdom.
I
f the North Korean iron curtain is brought down, it is going to open up the development-starved nation to progress on an unprecedented scale. For all intents and purposes, the region has been in existence from 7 Century BC and it is said to have a very hard-working population of close to 25 million people. Its
terrain is said to be blessed with spectacular mountains and spellbinding beaches which all augur well for tourism-related developments, including golf courses and golf resorts. Like its neighbour, the powerful golfing nation of South Korea, it has the same attributes in terms of its people and given the success of South Korea in golf, it makes good sense to deduce that North Korea will follow in its footsteps and grow golf exponentially. President Trump, a hugely successful real estate developer and owner of world class golf facilities in various parts of the world is excited at the prospects of world class developments in North Korea. At the Singapore Summit, President Trump observed, “They have great beaches. You see that whenever they’re exploding their cannons into the ocean. I said, boy, look at that view. Wouldn’t that make a great condo? And I explained, I said, you know, instead of doing that you could have the best hotels in the world right there. Think of it from a real estate perspective. You have South Korea, you have China, and they own the land in the middle. How bad is that, right? It’s great.” President Trump has a point, and a good eye for prime real estate. Indeed, his own company, the Trump Organization, might one day win deals in North Korea should the nation open up to development. Chairman Kim appears to appreciate his country’s tourism potential.
In May of 2018, the young leader ordered the construction of a world-class resort on the scenic beach at Wonsan, an

Some recent inbound tourism statistics reveal that around 100,000 tourists visited North Korea, with nearly all of them from China and some 5,000 coming from Western countries. Back in 2016, Justin Thomas was just another guy on the PGA Tour. Although he was good (you’ve got to be good to be on the world’s best Tour), he was not someone who was heralded as a hig star. But however, everything changed shortly after he successfully defended his title at the CIMB Classic in October 2016 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The kid had arrived! In a matter of weeks, he went on to win his third PGA tournament, the SBS Tournament of Champions and shortly after, he claimed victory again at the Sony Open in Hawaii becoming only the seventh player in PGA Tour history to shoot a 59. 2017 was a break-out year for Thomas when he won four PGA Tour events, including the PGA Championship and the FedEx Cup championship. In May 2018, Thomas became the 21st player to top the Official World Golf Ranking. ASIAN GOLF pays tribute to this incredible player and the following is a special report on Thomas that has been specially prepared by Chuah Choo Chiang, senior director, communications of the PGA TOUR.

Golf as an industry continues to grow in Asia and its growth is due directly to the continued investment and conďŹ dence showed in the game of golf by some of the continent’s most powerful and inuential entrepreneurs. These are men and women who have collectively invested billions millions in the development of and maintenance of vast golf complexes and who continue to invest in the growth of golf. A lot is owed to these visionaries because if it was not for them, Asia will be not be in the fortunate position of having more than 5,000 golf courses.
FOR ANY INDUSTRY TO GROW, THERE IS A NEED FOR RECOGNITION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT – THERE IS A NEED FOR HEROES TO HELP SET STANDARDS AND WITH THIS LIST, WE ARE GLAD TO HAVE PLAYED A ROLE IN HELPING TO BUILD GLOBAL RECOGNITION FOR THE MOVERS AND SHAKERS OF THE

T
he recognition of these movers and shakers was first launched by the Asia Pacific Golf Group (APGG) in 2013. The primary objective
of the recognition programme was to shine the spotlight on these leaders with a view to creating a greater awareness for the role they play and the contributions they make towards golf. Popularly known as “The Power Hitters”, the 2018 edition of this prestigious programme will mark the sixth edition. For the 2018 edition, the Chu brothers of Mission Hills fame, Dr. Ken Chu and Tenniel Chu, lead the list of the most powerful and influential people in golf in Asia. The men and women who have made the 2018 Power Hitters list have been selected based on the criteria: Scale of involvement with golf; Measurable investments in golf projects; Commitment to grow the game of golf; These criteria have helped sharpen
the selection process and APGG (parent company of Asian Golf) is proud to unveil its list of the “Most Powerful People In Golf” for 2018. It is a list that is both representative and reflective of the men and women who are known to be making major contributions towards the development and growth of golf throughout Asia. “For any industry to grow, there is a need for recognition and acknowledgement – there is a need for heroes to help set standards and with this list, we are glad to have played a role in helping to build global recognition for the movers and shakers of the Asian golf industry,” said Mike Sebastian, chief executive officer of the Asia Pacific Golf Group. For years, there has been a lot of talk about a global tour for the professional game. Some felt that the European Tour would lead the thrust in creating the tour while others felt that the giant PGA Tour (which is headquartered in America) would transform the dream into a reality. Then again, there was yet another school of thought that felt that the two tours would come together to make a mega tour happen. This was always a non-starter given the various agendas involved and we don’t even want to talk about the egos of some of the individuals who sit in the power seats of the two tours. Anyway, all that aside, it seems very obvious that the more muscled of the two, the organisation that operates across the pond, has emerged as the clear leader in the race to globalise the game of golf!

hen any deal is put together that is worth US$2 billion dollars, it is not only a big deal but it obviously brings a lot of value to those who are impacted by it. That’s what the PGA Tour deal is going to entail in terms of an investment by Discovery – US$2 billion! To make sense to our readers, this deal relates to the handling of all non-US television and digital rights of PGA Tour tournaments by the broadcasting giant Discovery. It is like the creation of a Netflixtype sports app. Through this deal golf will be reaching out to the digital generation with a large scale, direct-toconsumer service that will operate just like Netflix does for general entertainment. ASIAN GOLF has been given to understand that this multi-billion deal has been about six months in the making. What is significant about this coming together
is that the PGA Tour was quick to realise that an App is how people are increasingly watching video content. And with this App, and thanks to Discovery, the PGA Tour has jumped on-board the digital wave and is well on its way to creating a global golf tour! With this deal, Discovery will fix coverage of all PGA Tour-owned tournaments in over 200 countries. Discovery, as a global broadcaster is ideally positioned to increase the distribution of golf content and has committed to produce even more non-tournament material like behind the scenes content and with lots of supporting programmes. The bottom-line for the PGA Tour will simply mean more eyeballs watching golf which in turn will most definitely reach more new golfers (hopefully) resulting in more sales of equipment, merchandise and everything else that the PGA Tour has to offer. and all things PGA Tour and golf related.

Looks like our resident golf guru has got his games confused. With the World Cup fever sweeping the world, he has become so influenced by the beautiful game that he has now decided to draw upon some of the mechanics and dynamics of football to help you improve on your golf game. To be specific, he has a great tip on how you can improve your golf swing with a basic tip from football. Without further ado, here’s Tony Meechai and another of his unique Black Hat golf tips:
I
am actually a native of Chicago and the football that I was brought up on is that of the American variety where we play with pigskin balls. However, over the years of living in Thailand, I have become a true aficionado of soccer, the
world’s greatest sport! That said, I would like to honour the 2018 World Cup by using soccer to help improve your golf swing. This tip is a simple tip and golfers who are struggling with their swing can put it to work very easily. This is how it works. When you are experiencing difficulties with your swing just imagine kicking a soccer ball. The soccer ball is a lot bigger than the golf ball but you can just practice trying to kick it with a simple motion where you swing your leg back and kick down through the ball. You will notice that your kick does not stop short at the ball. Instead, the motion takes it through and past the ball.
It’s very similar to the swing motion for golf. Just take the back swing so that the club sets in an “L” position. Many coaches will refer to this as “cocking” the club on the backswing. Once you do this, try swinging your golf club through to the target! Here’s the simple drill: 1.
Setup to the ball with your club.
2.
Make a backswing and create an “L” like move.
3.
